• 0:41Nilay Patel?

Hello, welcome to The Vergecast. It is the week of March 2nd. This is an intro to the show.

• 0:47Speaker 01

  We're doing that again.

• 0:48Nilay Patel?

Yeah, I'm like, I'm in it.

• 0:49Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 0:49Nilay Patel?

So as you may have noticed, I'm going to dedicate every episode of the show to an iTunes reviewer. I will say there's a lot of gold in the iTunes reviews already. But if I would, I prefer to have new gold.

• 1:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04Nilay Patel?

  To increase our gold stockpile.

• 1:06Speaker 01

Lot of gold in them there hills.

• 1:08Nilay Patel?

Yeah, so Chris is fired. We're also, any iTunes reviewer may be replacing Chris at the site. That's also an opportunity for you, but yeah, that's the thing we're going to do. But yeah, week of March 2nd. Hi, I'm Neil Appatell.

• 1:26Speaker 02

  I'm Dieter Bone.

• 1:27Speaker 01

  I'm Chris Siggler.

• 1:28Nilay Patel?

  Over in the swipe desk.

• 1:31Speaker 01

That's Tinder right now. We're on Tinder. I would swipe right on you, Sam. Thank you, Chris.

• 1:36Speaker 02

So I would swipe right on you too. Can we talk about how?

• 1:39Nilay Patel?

Do you want to talk about libertarians?

• 1:41Speaker 02

I was talking about swiping was like Swiper no swiping a Dora joke up until Tinder.

• 1:47Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:47Speaker 02

And now like the two things are horribly mixed in my mind.

• 1:50Nilay Patel?

Yeah. I mean, look, I don't want to talk about Dora. I've already, I will say that on this show, already once, there's an episode where I issue what I believe to be just an incendiary Dora takedown, so.

• 2:04Speaker 01

Are we, what, are we talking about Dora the Explorer?

• 2:07Nilay Patel?

Yeah. Yeah, Dora's cool, Diego just like.

• 2:09Speaker 02

  Not so much.

• 2:10Nilay Patel?

  Cut it out.

• 2:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:11Nilay Patel?

  Get out.

• 2:11Speaker 02

  Diego's the worst.

• 2:12Nilay Patel?

  Swiper should take Diego down.

• 2:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:14Nilay Patel?

  Is like a thing.

• 2:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:15Nilay Patel?

  Like swipe, swipe.

• 2:18Speaker 01

Are you guys watching? Like where's this coming? Do you both have like, like a nephews or like?

• 2:23Nilay Patel?

Dora, I'll be clear, Dora has a sweet backpack.

• 2:26Speaker 01

  Oh, I'm saying. Get backpack.

• 2:28Nilay Patel?

There's a lot of stuff in it. All I'm saying is the episode of Dora in which Swiper swipes Diego to death. That's like the darkest timeline.

• 2:38Speaker 01

That's also a Tinder like horror film.

• 2:42Nilay Patel?

No, so here's the thing. So we did a post. TC just wrote a very jokey post about the new Rand Paul for president logo, which has like flames in it that very much look like the Tinder logos flames like tilted over.

• 2:56Speaker 01

  Swipe right for Rand.

• 2:57Nilay Patel?

Right. Swipe right, swipe right for Rand. That's a great, that's awesome. You're in, you're in the game already. You're like, you're young, you're hip.

• 3:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:04Nilay Patel?

We were probably gonna have a sexual encounter. Who knows? Like, I'm into you, right? Like, I'm into freedom.

• 3:12Nilay Patel?

It's with the headline, the headline was a joke. The headline was Rand Paul swipes Tinder's logo.

• 3:18Speaker 01

  Right.

• 3:18Nilay Patel?

  And like, people just.

• 3:20Speaker 01

  Oh, he literally stole it.

• 3:22Nilay Patel?

I've never come across more humorless people than Rand Paul supporters who feel affronted by the, the notion that the defender of truth in America would have stolen anything. And it was just like, my Twitter exploded.

• 3:38Speaker 01

So they were swiping left on that post.

• 3:40Nilay Patel?

I was like, please, please don't make me explain wordplay to you. It was bad. Um, anyway, this is a Vergecast. We don't normally talk about libertarianism, but I think today it's.

• 3:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, we're no.

• 3:52Nilay Patel?

Actually, a ton of news this week.

• 3:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:55Nilay Patel?

And I'm, we're gonna try. We have it marked down for 20 minutes on the sheet, but we'll see if we can get through 10 seconds of talking about the Galaxy S6. Well, Chris, go ahead. Say some stuff about the S6. I've been challenging him to do it basically for the past.

• 4:10Speaker 01

There's a bunch of stuff. Well, so, uh, just a little anecdote here. We, um, Sam and I beefed today as we do from time to time. And.

• 4:18Speaker 03

That is, for those people that don't know, it's a show called Bee for Boss on our Snapchat account. We are the Real Verge on Snapchat.

• 4:22Nilay Patel?

Oh, my God, Sam. All right.

• 4:25Speaker 01

  So we beefed.

• 4:26Nilay Patel?

  Come on, dude.

• 4:27Speaker 01

And, uh, and the, the typical format for beef or bust is we go through three, uh, newsy topics and beef them or bust them, depending on whether we like them or dislike them. Uh, and so we got to the Galaxy S6 and, uh, and I could neither beef nor bust it.

• 4:42Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 4:42Speaker 01

Because the, the phone leaves such a large enigmatic spot in my brain.

• 4:48Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 4:48Speaker 01

  Um, so I just.

• 4:49Nilay Patel?

  It's like a void.

• 4:50Speaker 02

It's a void of reaction. Is it, is it a growth?

• 4:53Nilay Patel?

Well, so let's, let's do some setup.

• 4:55Speaker 01

I don't know whether to swipe left or right on this phone.

• 4:57Nilay Patel?

Yeah, you're just, you're just left there alone. Uh, so this week was Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. That's the setup for all this. We have a bunch of people there, Tom Warren, Dan Seifert, Vlad.

• 5:08Speaker 01

  Sean O'Kane.

• 5:08Nilay Patel?

  Sean O'Kane, Sam Byford.

• 5:10Speaker 02

  Ryan Rondo.

• 5:11Nilay Patel?

Rondo, uh, we, it's just a ton of people. Marques Brownlee was there with us.

• 5:16Speaker 01

  Wes Real, our drone expert.

• 5:18Nilay Patel?

Yeah, our drone expert, this fact.

• 5:20Speaker 02

  Luxuriant beard on Wes.

• 5:22Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 5:22Nilay Patel?

Uh, here's the thing about being, being able to say things like drone expert and mean it. Today, literally Dieter said, hey, do you want to see something? And I said, sure. And he opened the door to a phone room and it was just Chris sitting in a room, talking to a telepresence robot. But like very seriously.

• 5:36Speaker 01

But, but there was a real human there. It was James Vincent, our UK reporter.

• 5:40Nilay Patel?

Yeah, that's what we told him. No, but it was just like, it was like, it was like a cartoon. It was like, hey, check this out. You open it up and you're like, blah, blah, blah.

• 5:48Speaker 02

Actually, this is twice it because I, I went to a tech company, uh, which I cannot name, and we were like walking through the halls of the meeting room and we had to stop and wait for two drones to pass.

• 5:58Nilay Patel?

Okay, there we go. That's, anyway, so MWC is in full swing. It was actually, I feel like we get, we get confused every, every year about how many people and resources to send to MWC.

• 6:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:10Nilay Patel?

Cause last year was really boring and this year's really exciting.

• 6:12Speaker 01

No, no, last year was exciting two years ago.

• 6:15Nilay Patel?

Oh, two years, that's, I think two years ago I went and it was like, we basically had nothing to do.

• 6:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:19Nilay Patel?

Um, but this year's really exciting. There's all kinds of stuff going on. There's like VR headsets and, and just crazy other round phones.

• 6:26Speaker 02

We should cram some GDC news in here later, speaking of VR.

• 6:29Nilay Patel?

Right, and there's just stuff, just lots of stuff going on.

• 6:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:33Nilay Patel?

But what I would tell you is the biggest news of MWC is the Galaxy S6.

• 6:38Speaker 01

Yeah. Or is it the Vive?

• 6:40Nilay Patel?

  Nah, it's the, it's the S6, like.

• 6:42Speaker 02

It's, it's how do you pronounce the Vive?

• 6:44Speaker 01

  It is, is it?

• 6:45Speaker 02

  It's Vive.

• 6:45Nilay Patel?

  It's Vive.

• 6:46Speaker 02

  Vive like hive.

• 6:48Nilay Patel?

Oh my god. Anyway, so like, there's a VR headset that HTC made, but whatever, like, that is interesting because it's partnered with Valve, but just, it, you have to admit that like the S6 will like breach more people and be in more pockets and

• 7:01Speaker 02

  Yep, yeah.

• 7:02Nilay Patel?

  Be a bigger product.

• 7:03Speaker 02

It's a bigger deal than the HTC 1M9.

• 7:05Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 7:06Speaker 02

  For sure, yeah.

• 7:06Nilay Patel?

Yeah. So we should talk about the M92.

• 7:08Speaker 02

I do think the S6 is interesting.

• 7:10Nilay Patel?

But here's the thing, we still haven't started talking about the S6. We're still just talking around it. It's like, the thing itself is like that, it's like the sound of space, it's like, like, it's just not there. You can't consider it.

• 7:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:23Nilay Patel?

  Right?

• 7:24Speaker 02

It's just because you haven't held it yet. Maybe?

• 7:27Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, sure.

• 7:28Speaker 02

But like, okay, I mean, the specs are like what you expect the specs to be, right? 5.1 inch screen, super AMOLED, 3 gigs of RAM, Xeon's processor, who knows what we'll get in the US, probably maybe this time, who knows? But what's interesting about it-

• 7:45Speaker 01

It was also designed by Apple in California.

• 7:47Speaker 02

Right, so what's interesting is the design, because the bottom of it looks exactly like an iPhone.

• 7:52Speaker 01

Sam laughed for that sick burn.

• 7:54Speaker 03

No, I was drinking, that was funny.

• 7:56Speaker 02

And it's glass on the front and the back.

• 7:58Nilay Patel?

  Cool validation.

• 7:58Speaker 02

And they, they went, they, is the thing water resistant? I don't even know.

• 8:02Nilay Patel?

  So yeah, they went backwards.

• 8:04Speaker 02

There's no water resistance, there's no micro SD card slot, and there's no removable battery.

• 8:07Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 8:07Speaker 02

They made a completely fully sealed, like, old school, not old school, like, like-

• 8:12Nilay Patel?

  They made an iPhone.

• 8:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:13Speaker 01

Well, what they did also was they burned the, like, the Android, the hardcore Android traditionalists who believe, who are, I think, kind of an extension of like the Nokia traditionalists, who just want these insane like transformer phones that have removable batteries and all this nonsense.

• 8:31Speaker 02

It does have two different modes of wireless charging, which was nerdy.

• 8:35Speaker 03

No, but Chris, I see what you're saying, like, the, the argument to buy a Galaxy now is sort of, you know, it's leveled.

• 8:42Nilay Patel?

Why did you put Galaxy in scare quotes just then?

• 8:44Speaker 03

Because, because they're the normals, and I put normals in square quotes.

• 8:49Nilay Patel?

You're just insulting everyone left and right.

• 8:51Speaker 03

No, no, like, if you go to someone on the street and you're like, do you have an iPhone or an Android phone? They'd be like, oh, you mean my Galaxy? And like, that has just become a thing.

• 8:58Nilay Patel?

Okay, one, who are you talking to on the street?

• 9:00Speaker 03

Strangers. Um, no, but I totally see what you're saying, Chris. No removable battery.

• 9:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:06Speaker 03

They took away all of those like cool things about Android like, oh, my Android phone, you can remove the battery. Well, not anymore sucker, sorry.

• 9:14Speaker 02

But that was a Samsung thing. Everybody else was going to.

• 9:18Speaker 01

But can we also talk about, it's not just the bottom of the phone, it's the fact that the home button is a touch ID sensor.

• 9:23Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 9:24Speaker 01

And, and instead of Apple Pay, it has Samsung Pay.

• 9:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:27Speaker 01

Which looks exactly the same. So I. Come on.

• 9:32Nilay Patel?

And the bottom of the phone, like the bottom of the phone is just particularly.

• 9:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:36Nilay Patel?

Like, I will see the S6 Edge, there's another version with like.

• 9:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:40Nilay Patel?

Curved screen on both sides. That looks, I think, different.

• 9:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:43Nilay Patel?

Like it's got a vibe to it that I'm kind of into.

• 9:46Speaker 01

It looks really nice in pictures, but Vlad brought up a good point with me, which is that it's just kind of hard to hold because there are no sides to this phone.

• 9:54Nilay Patel?

  Really?

• 9:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:56Nilay Patel?

We did a video, the video's on our YouTube channel, Marquez did a little like play with the S6 Edge.

• 10:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:02Nilay Patel?

And there's one feature that I think is really cool, which is when you've got it face down, so in meetings, actually now that I think about more, this feature is probably bad for me. I like to put my phone face down on the table in meetings, so like it buzzes and I know that stuff is happening because I'm an addict, uh, but I can't look at the screen.

• 10:21Speaker 01

What if you had a Yoda phone?

• 10:23Nilay Patel?

Oh, damn. Then I would be like, be reading novels. But the S6 Edge, because the screen curves, curves up and off the table, it does like a pulsing like Knight Rider light thing.

• 10:35Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 10:35Nilay Patel?

To show you when it's face down, to show you what the notifications are.

• 10:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:40Nilay Patel?

  Which I think is awesome.

• 10:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:41Nilay Patel?

Because then you could like, there's all kinds of stuff you could do. And I think that there's like, there's little things like that which are cool with the S6 Edge.

• 10:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:49Nilay Patel?

Um, it's still like, you still have to believe that Samsung's software platform to support that stuff, that anyone will buy into it, that it's like not crappy.

• 10:59Speaker 01

This goes back to the, the momentum, right? When they had the ticker on the front. It's like, that never had any support from anybody.

• 11:06Nilay Patel?

  No.

• 11:07Speaker 01

And so are they gonna have the same, of course, this is a very different situation.

• 11:10Nilay Patel?

  Well, I mean.

• 11:10Speaker 02

  They do show like notifications.

• 11:12Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 11:12Speaker 02

Even if nobody supports it, which nobody will support it. It it'll still have some function. Mark has made the point that it makes it nice for like swiping in for pulling.

• 11:21Nilay Patel?

What's funny about that too is like the iPhone is curved on the side.

• 11:24Speaker 02

  Right.

• 11:24Nilay Patel?

And not, obviously not as dramatic.

• 11:26Speaker 02

That's why I don't like using a case on my iPhone because it makes it harder to to do the backswipes.

• 11:30Speaker 01

Weird. So they they didn't announce pricing for either of these, right?

• 11:33Speaker 02

No, but T-Mobile is holding a contest and I believe it was Android Central. Somebody was like, oh, let's just look at the terms of service.

• 11:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:40Speaker 02

  For the the contest.

• 11:41Speaker 01

For the S6 or the Edge?

• 11:42Speaker 02

  Uh, Blue's.

• 11:43Nilay Patel?

  S6.

• 11:43Speaker 02

  S6.

• 11:44Speaker 01

So how do you, so how do you price the Edge?

• 11:47Speaker 02

That's like the contest terms of service.

• 11:49Speaker 01

Sure, but either way, you figure the S6 is the non Edge S6 is not like a low end phone.

• 11:55Speaker 02

  Right.

• 11:55Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 11:55Speaker 01

So that leaves you very little wiggle room to price these two devices and still be reasonable, right?

• 12:01Speaker 02

Well, they're gonna, there there's gonna be a premium. It's gotta be at least 50 bucks if you have a hundred on the off con or the, you know, gone contract price. Who knows what off contract? They could, they could price the off contract like it could be 200 bucks more. Who knows?

• 12:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:16Speaker 02

Imagine if that this phone was like $900. Think about it.

• 12:20Speaker 01

  I mean.

• 12:21Nilay Patel?

Well, it doesn't mean it doesn't because it, most people are gonna buy it on.

• 12:24Speaker 02

  Right.

• 12:25Nilay Patel?

Contract or on Next or some crap.

• 12:27Speaker 01

  Right.

• 12:27Nilay Patel?

You know, I gave up and just signed up for Next.

• 12:30Speaker 01

  So did you.

• 12:31Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, we're both getting screwed.

• 12:33Speaker 03

You guys have sold yourselves to the corporate world.

• 12:35Nilay Patel?

I don't know, but it's it's so hard to buy a phone. Like it was, it was literally easier to give them my soul.

• 12:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:41Nilay Patel?

Than to give them like several hundred dollars.

• 12:43Speaker 02

So I signed up for Next.

• 12:44Nilay Patel?

Figure out how to do it.

• 12:45Speaker 02

And then I was like, nope, I'm switching to Verizon. And then I called them like, I gotta pay my ETF. And like, oh, you signed up for Next. You you're not under contract anymore because it's next is magical. I'm like, okay, well, I just gotta pay off the rest of the phone.

• 12:55Speaker 01

They actually say that because Next is magical?

• 12:57Nilay Patel?

But in like a drone robot voice.

• 13:02Speaker 02

For the the remainder of my phone was worth and like they lost the payment and I was like shruggy, whatever. And so they're continuing to bill me.

• 13:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:08Speaker 02

To for the rest of the phone, even though I don't have a thing.

• 13:10Nilay Patel?

  Why not?

• 13:10Speaker 02

And I wanna call, I wanna like go to the website and tell them, just let me pay the rest and you can leave me alone forever.

• 13:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:16Speaker 02

And because I transferred my phone number, I literally don't.

• 13:20Speaker 01

Have an account with them. I have to call them and like beg to pay them. Otherwise, they're just gonna keep billing me.

• 13:26Nilay Patel?

No, this is, I'm telling you, this is AT&T's new game.

• 13:28Speaker 01

  Insane AT&T netherworld.

• 13:29Nilay Patel?

AT&T has gotten to the point where they would rather make it so hard for you to pay them a full amount of money. Because they would prefer a tiny amount of money forever.

• 13:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:41Nilay Patel?

Like they've, like they've nailed it. They're like, you know what? Like, there's a lot of people out there want to pay us $700 for an unlocked phone. But we're gonna demand that you give us $25 a month for the rest of your life. That's it. That's all you can do. That's the only interaction you can have.

• 13:54Speaker 03

Chris, have you fallen for this corporate bull crap?

• 13:57Speaker 01

  No, I'm on, I'm.

• 13:58Nilay Patel?

Why do you think, why is it, it's like, what do you mean like corporate? It's just like.

• 14:03Speaker 03

  Dude.

• 14:03Speaker 01

  I'm, I'm.

• 14:04Nilay Patel?

  Suit guys, get AT&T next.

• 14:06Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm, I'm on the good old fashioned.

• 14:08Speaker 03

  Unlimited.

• 14:10Speaker 01

  No, no, man. I, I'm on a, I'm on a, I'm on a two-year contract.

• 14:13Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 14:13Speaker 01

Like, America intended. Like the founding fathers.

• 14:18Nilay Patel?

  Right in the constitution.

• 14:19Speaker 01

  God intended.

• 14:20Nilay Patel?

It's the, uh, yeah, right. It's the, the, the forgotten zero with amendment.

• 14:28Speaker 03

Look, unlimited data for life. You buy your phone off contract and you're good.

• 14:34Nilay Patel?

How do you have unlimited data for life?

• 14:35Speaker 01

Because he has a legacy plan. Look, I have, do you want to know how many gigabytes are in my, my bucket right now? I have 20, I have.

• 14:43Nilay Patel?

Excuse me, I have to tweet something.

• 14:45Speaker 01

I have 27 gigabytes that I have to use this month.

• 14:49Speaker 03

Yeah, and guess how many I never have to worry about?

• 14:52Nilay Patel?

In terms of like, sick owns, not on the list.

• 14:58Speaker 03

Guess how many gigabytes I have in my bucket, said Chris Nigler once.

• 15:02Speaker 01

No, I, I know, I know that you're, like, your response to that is I have infinity.

• 15:05Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 15:06Speaker 01

Gigabytes and infinity buckets. But here's the thing. But here's the thing. I use, I use, uh, lossless streaming.

• 15:15Speaker 03

Yeah, because you're the only hype lord in the world that uses title.

• 15:18Speaker 01

  I download apps.

• 15:20Nilay Patel?

  Okay, at my leisure.

• 15:22Speaker 03

  Look.

• 15:22Nilay Patel?

  And I, I, I watch movies.

• 15:24Speaker 03

I could take advantage of Meerkat and Snapchat Discover without blinking.

• 15:27Nilay Patel?

Here's what I know about talking to Sam today. Here's what I, here's what has become abundantly clear. Sam is gonna hype that. Got a Meerkat all day long. Do you want to just hear real quick? Let's do two things.

• 15:39Speaker 01

  Right.

• 15:39Nilay Patel?

  I check the S6.

• 15:43Speaker 02

  See?

• 15:43Speaker 03

  I'm impressed.

• 15:44Speaker 02

  You did it.

• 15:44Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 15:45Speaker 02

  There's nothing to say.

• 15:46Speaker 03

  I'm impressed.

• 15:47Speaker 02

  You're impressed?

• 15:48Speaker 03

I'm impressed. It looks like nice hardware, albeit it has the same bottom as the iPhone, but like, they finally didn't make a plastic piece of crap.

• 15:56Speaker 02

Yeah, but... Stop putting glass in the back of phones. Stop it. Don't do it anymore. Stop.

• 16:02Speaker 03

  Wait, why not? Why not?

• 16:03Speaker 02

Wait, wait, wait, no, no, let go. Don't do it.

• 16:05Nilay Patel?

Dieter's having an emotion about the S6. It's taken us a week. We finally got one. Hold on to it like the precious flower it is. Keep going.

• 16:14Speaker 02

Glass shatters. It cracks. I don't care how good and strong and light and thin it is. It cracks. You, why have two surfaces to do it? Like, it was fine on the iPhone for a while, but now you got tired of it and when they switched the lumo, you're like, oh, that's so much better. Thank you. Thank you, Apple.

• 16:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 16:30Speaker 02

And then like, what other, what phones with glass backs are good right now? What, what other phone has a glass back? Name the other Android phone with a glass back.

• 16:38Speaker 03

  Me Note.

• 16:40Speaker 02

  Z3?

• 16:40Speaker 03

  Racked.

• 16:41Speaker 02

  Me Note is glass?

• 16:43Speaker 03

  I think so.

• 16:43Nilay Patel?

Doesn't the Xperia Z3 have a glass back?

• 16:45Speaker 03

  That definitely is, yeah.

• 16:46Speaker 02

Yeah, that, that you actually want.

• 16:48Nilay Patel?

  Oh.

• 16:49Speaker 02

  I, I, I still want a Z3.

• 16:51Nilay Patel?

The Z3 is actually a really nice phone.

• 16:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, whatever.

• 16:54Nilay Patel?

  Sorry, man.

• 16:54Speaker 02

  There should be a Z4. I just...

• 16:56Nilay Patel?

Dieter, that was a good emotion.

• 16:57Speaker 02

Just go ahead and make it metal.

• 17:00Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 17:01Speaker 02

  Or like ceramic or paper.

• 17:04Speaker 03

If you drop the phone, you're gonna shatter one side, so what does it matter if you shatter one or two sides? Because you, you want your cracking the LCD, the other, you're just cracking a glass panel, which presumably is easy to replace.

• 17:16Nilay Patel?

Yeah, but, but that's making my point.

• 17:18Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 17:20Nilay Patel?

Because the, the, the back matters less.

• 17:22Speaker 02

  I mean, this is literally...

• 17:23Nilay Patel?

I just want to say, we are now getting fired up. This is as much, as fired up as we've gotten about the iPhone 4.

• 17:29Speaker 02

  Apparently.

• 17:31Nilay Patel?

That's it. That's where I've landed. Like, the most emotions we can have about the S6 are an argument we had four years ago.

• 17:38Speaker 02

The software is apparently less offensive?

• 17:41Nilay Patel?

This, yeah, they turned out, they took out 40% of the features and that's like a bullet point.

• 17:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:45Nilay Patel?

I mean, great. Does it still tinkle at you when you touch it?

• 17:50Nilay Patel?

I know, it's just rough. It's like Samsung is so big, they're so massive, they're so, oh my-

• 17:54Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 17:56Speaker 01

  No.

• 17:57Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, that's what it does.

• 17:58Speaker 02

  That's the S5 sound.

• 17:59Speaker 01

That sound just come out of your mouth?

• 18:00Nilay Patel?

He did it manually. But while like-

• 18:04Speaker 03

I thought that was John, so I was really confused for a second.

• 18:08Speaker 02

Yeah. When you're typing, it's like raining raindrops.

• 18:11Nilay Patel?

  It's not like raindrops.

• 18:11Speaker 03

You're making it rain every time you send a message.

• 18:13Nilay Patel?

It's no raindrop plops. It's definitely something else.

• 18:22Speaker 02

Okay, there are solids falling into a pool of water.

• 18:28Speaker 03

  Welcome to the Poopcast.

• 18:30Nilay Patel?

  What?

• 18:32Nilay Patel?

No, I'm saying it's just Samsung's so big, they're so ma- and then there's the other phone, right? There's the HTC phone.

• 18:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:37Nilay Patel?

And the HTC like Vive, Vive.

• 18:39Speaker 02

Well, there's a Samsung Gear VR.

• 18:41Nilay Patel?

  Huh?

• 18:42Speaker 02

There's a Samsung Gear VR, the new version of that that actually works with the real phone and whatever, but we're gonna wait till next year apparently, according to John Carmack, for the awesome one. That's actually for consumers.

• 18:49Speaker 03

No, wasn't, didn't he say end of 2015?

• 18:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, right, sorry.

• 18:53Speaker 03

When the, alongside the note, um, five?

• 18:55Speaker 02

  Four.

• 18:56Speaker 03

  Four.

• 18:56Speaker 02

  Five.

• 18:57Speaker 03

  It'll be the five.

• 18:57Speaker 02

Although he didn't say it, but he basically said it.

• 19:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:01Speaker 01

That'll be EFA next year, I'm sure.

• 19:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:03Speaker 01

  This year.

• 19:04Speaker 02

  I-

• 19:04Speaker 01

  This year.

• 19:04Nilay Patel?

  Oh yeah, sure.

• 19:05Speaker 02

This combined, and we saw the Vive, uh, HTC Vive, both here and we saw a bunch of stuff at GDC. It seems good and interesting, but can I just say that I am really tired-

• 19:18Speaker 03

Tell, tell the people what it is.

• 19:19Speaker 02

Oh, the HTC Vive is a virtual reality headset. They made it in conjunction with Steam, which is very exciting and interesting. Uh, it looks bonkers because it has like a grid of lasers on the front of it that-

• 19:32Speaker 01

  That blind everyone around you.

• 19:33Speaker 02

Yeah, no, it'll position you in a room. So instead of, like, there's been like radio controlled handsets that they can position in space, but this thing just uses lasers. And there's a base station, so it makes the head tracking less nauseous, uh, according to Gabe Newell, because it's better able to detect small movements and movements like in space, like laterally, so it'll be less nausea inducing and it lets you like interact with the room or be in a room.

• 19:58Speaker 01

And a cool side benefit of it is that it, um, warns you if you're gonna hit something physically in the room around you.

• 20:05Speaker 02

Yeah, and then the controllers for it have little hats that have the same lasers on them.

• 20:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 20:11Speaker 03

And it's interesting, Gabe Newell said that 0% of people get nauseous.

• 20:17Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 20:17Speaker 03

And that was like when we tried out the Oculus at CES, a bunch of us, like when we took it off, we were like, oh my god, like, kind of feels sick.

• 20:23Nilay Patel?

And Addy and Chris have both been pointing out that the controllers are a bigger story than the headset.

• 20:26Speaker 02

Yeah, they're really, they do grip and a couple of other things, and they're very, very, very accurate.

• 20:31Nilay Patel?

Right. So this is like, very exciting news for me. But like, and because Valve's involved, presumably there will be content.

• 20:38Speaker 02

  Right.

• 20:38Nilay Patel?

And, you know, like, there's a distribution mechanism for VR behind it, because of Steam.

• 20:43Speaker 03

  Right.

• 20:43Speaker 01

It'll be as successful as the Steam machines have been.

• 20:46Speaker 02

Well, so this is what I'm saying. No, this is like, Valve doing VR is the perfect thing to do VR, because for three years now, VR has been, oh, it's great for developers, and it's just around the corner in a real consumer release. Would somebody, other than Samsung with a thing that you strap a phone into, please do an actual VR release, not like, we're just trying it out to do some stuff release?

• 21:09Speaker 03

  Right.

• 21:09Speaker 02

Yeah, I know it's okay, I want to say it's okay to take your time, like, that's like, been the message, it's cool, take your time, especially with Oculus, because nobody's doing, doing it right. But Sony's Project Morpheus, they tried it out at GDC, it's not coming till like, a year from now.

• 21:24Nilay Patel?

  Sean Hollister.

• 21:25Speaker 03

  Who knows?

• 21:26Nilay Patel?

  Morpheus is great.

• 21:28Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'm sure it is.

• 21:29Speaker 01

But he hasn't tried Vive, I don't think.

• 21:31Speaker 02

Okay. Hololens, it also is going to work with the Xbox, that's super exciting, I'm pumped about that, but again, later. I just, I really am waiting, at this point, somebody needs to be the first one to say.

• 21:44Speaker 03

  I was just gonna say.

• 21:45Speaker 02

We are having a consumer release, this is for you, regular people, not just developers, not just experiments.

• 21:51Nilay Patel?

  It's just a way, it's a ways off, like, we don't.

• 21:53Speaker 03

Who is it, though? Who is it gonna be?

• 21:54Nilay Patel?

The Oculus is not good enough. It's great, but like, the resolution's grainy, and it does look screw with your head. It doesn't have a controller strategy, right? There's, there's some, like, there's many missing pieces for, Oculus is built off of the fact that, like, Palmer Lucky figured out the screen thing.

• 22:09Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 22:10Nilay Patel?

Right? Like, that's the core of it. And all the rest of it is like, the company's building around it, Facebook's money is gonna pay for it. The Vive, Vive.

• 22:18Speaker 02

According to Addy, it's pronounced Vive like hive.

• 22:21Nilay Patel?

The Vive. Uh, it seems like a more complete sort of riff on it, but they have to figure out how many content for it. I'm sure there's like-

• 22:28Speaker 02

  I think they can.

• 22:29Nilay Patel?

Well, I'm sure they could, right? I mean, it's they're a game company. That's what it's going to be for. But what is interesting there is like VR needs to have applications beyond like FPS shooters and like needs to like be narrative fiction and all this other stuff.

• 22:44Speaker 02

  Right.

• 22:45Nilay Patel?

So like, I, I think the first wave of it is going to be these like weird targeted custom campaigns that we see like you're like, it's a movie promo and you're gonna like put it on and be in the action sequence for five seconds or whatever. Or like-

• 22:59Speaker 02

Which is where cardboard is compelling because they can just ship these things out, you know?

• 23:02Nilay Patel?

Right, right. Um, so I, I think there's just like, it's not, I don't think the consumer release is anywhere near reality because I think you have to build excitement for it. Like you have to, you have to give it to people in ways that like build hype-

• 23:17Speaker 02

My concern is that they're building excitement. They're doing a fine job of it, but how long until people start being like, oh, well, this is never happening. Like I'm, I'm done having my excitement built.

• 23:26Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, it's like they, they have a certain amount of, a fixed amount of hype cash.

• 23:31Nilay Patel?

  Oh my god.

• 23:32Speaker 01

They can spend that hype cash-

• 23:33Nilay Patel?

How many gigabytes are in your hype bucket?

• 23:35Speaker 02

  Oh, I thought you meant hype cash like C A C H E.

• 23:38Nilay Patel?

  I mean, Sam-

• 23:38Speaker 02

You mean hype cash like Sam wants to kill himself.

• 23:41Nilay Patel?

  Right. Suicidal swagastee over there.

• 23:44Speaker 01

And at some point, at some point Oculus and HTC and Steam are going to run out of hype cash.

• 23:50Speaker 02

Yeah, and they're gonna go hype debt.

• 23:52Speaker 01

Right, and they'll go into hype debt.

• 23:55Speaker 01

What does it even mean to go into hype debt? I don't know. We need to work that out.

• 23:59Speaker 01

But you know, so by the time they're actually ready with the consumer release-

• 24:02Nilay Patel?

Okay, but I would tell you that many products that we use have been in hype debt in the past and successfully recovered.

• 24:08Speaker 01

  Like?

• 24:09Nilay Patel?

  Smartphones.

• 24:10Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 24:10Nilay Patel?

Smartphones, straight up, were in hype debt for like, three years. I would say between 2004 and 2007, smartphones were in the hype red.

• 24:19Speaker 01

Dieter was definitely in the hype zone during those years.

• 24:22Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, but like-

• 24:23Speaker 03

  Dieter created that hype zone.

• 24:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:24Nilay Patel?

No, Dieter, single-handedly, was like, trying to drag them out of the hype- The hype pit. Like, Dieter was like, "Check out my Nokia communicator." Like, that was what smartphones were.

• 24:33Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 24:34Nilay Patel?

Like, remember the Nokia store in Chicago?

• 24:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:37Nilay Patel?

And you'd go there, and you'd like, buy an E75 for like, $800.

• 24:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:40Nilay Patel?

And AT&T'd be like, "What the hell is this?"

• 24:42Speaker 01

Yeah. Oh, yeah. I bought every new phone from that store, believe me.

• 24:46Nilay Patel?

And it was just like, I'd be like, "Check out my new phone." And everyone'd be like, "I don't, that's dumb."

• 24:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:50Nilay Patel?

That's hype debt. Right? "Check out this new product that's available, that I know is the future." And people are like, "That's dumb."

• 24:56Speaker 03

And then, and then you wait for all of the normals to ride the hype wave. And then you come back into the lack of hype, you know?

• 25:03Nilay Patel?

Here, here's what I know just happened. And I want to be very clear about what happened. We just mixed a surfing metaphor with a banking metaphor.

• 25:14Nilay Patel?

I don't think that works for us. Like, I don't think in any reality, any like, bank official is like, "Well, you surfed your way right out of debt."

• 25:22Speaker 03

You just ride the hype wave.

• 25:23Nilay Patel?

Really, really, really hung ten on that foreclosure. You're good to go.

• 25:32Nilay Patel?

Uh, I would not be good at running a bank.

• 25:35Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 25:36Speaker 01

  Or surfing, necessarily.

• 25:38Nilay Patel?

No. So, we should talk about the M9 as well. So, there is a headset, the headset that GDC-

• 25:43Speaker 02

There's less to say about the M9 than there was about the S6. The HCC M9 is like, "Yo, we stopped putting a stupid gimmick camera on the back."

• 25:52Speaker 01

And put a different stupid camera.

• 25:55Speaker 02

They put in a camera with 20 megapixels, that's it.

• 25:57Nilay Patel?

And they put the gimmick camera on the front.

• 25:59Speaker 02

They put the gimmick camera on the front, and they kept the design the same, which is fine.

• 26:02Nilay Patel?

  But here's what I'll say-

• 26:02Speaker 02

I'm not mad about, everyone was real mad that they were keeping the design the same. I don't care, it's fine, it's good design.

• 26:06Nilay Patel?

I think it's uglier. There's just no way these phones are not, like, this is the year of ugly phones. Like, we just all have to look ourselves-

• 26:13Speaker 03

  Yeah, I agree.

• 26:14Nilay Patel?

-square in the eye and be like-

• 26:15Speaker 03

  I don't think the 6 and 6+ are anything-

• 26:16Nilay Patel?

  The iPhone 6 is ugly.

• 26:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:18Nilay Patel?

That camera bulb is ugly, the back of it looks- Like a bad application of racing stripes. Like, like, that's what it looks like, right?

• 26:25Speaker 01

  Like the worst possible Mustang.

• 26:27Nilay Patel?

Yeah. The iPhone six is the worst possible Mustang.

• 26:31Speaker 01

It's veneer, it's like his veneer smartphone to wow us all. Yeah, the Moto X is a good looking phone.

• 26:36Nilay Patel?

  This is 2014, though.

• 26:38Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's last year's Moto X.

• 26:38Speaker 02

Well, so is the iPhone six.

• 26:41Speaker 01

  True.

• 26:41Nilay Patel?

  Well, yeah, but this generation.

• 26:43Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:43Nilay Patel?

  Is that a new generation?

• 26:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:45Nilay Patel?

Okay, so that one looks fine.

• 26:46Speaker 03

  Right.

• 26:46Nilay Patel?

But that's because you picked it.

• 26:47Speaker 03

  Right.

• 26:49Nilay Patel?

So whatever. So that one's fine, but like.

• 26:50Speaker 01

Johnny Ive would be real mad that you picked that one.

• 26:53Nilay Patel?

Yeah, it's nice. But like, the iPhone six is like, pretty ugly. I think it looks better in a case. The S6, it looks like an iPhone six.

• 27:03Nilay Patel?

Guilt by, like, guilt by association.

• 27:05Speaker 03

  That's true.

• 27:06Nilay Patel?

Plus, it has the camera bulge, like, whatever. The M9 is like.

• 27:11Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 27:12Nilay Patel?

It has the camera bulge. It looks like it's wearing a backpack. Like, it looks like the M8.

• 27:17Speaker 01

  Like Dora.

• 27:19Nilay Patel?

Yeah, so bullshit by default. And then they took the gold and they made it two-tone. So the gold one in particular is like gross.

• 27:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:29Nilay Patel?

Just straight up, just looks nasty.

• 27:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:31Nilay Patel?

But here's what I will say, the number one, they moved the ultra pixel from the back of the M8 to the front of the M9. And like, it's like, dude.

• 27:39Speaker 03

Who cares about the, who cares if the front camera is an ultra pixel camera? Who cares?

• 27:43Nilay Patel?

No one cares, but I will say this.

• 27:45Speaker 01

  Self-aficionados.

• 27:46Nilay Patel?

It makes it so obvious that that big fake camera lens in the back of the M8 was just a lie. Because the back of the M8 has like a huge fake camera lens and then like a little camera in the middle of it.

• 27:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:57Speaker 03

Oh, that was the one with the two cameras on the back, right? It was like, which some HTC phone had two cameras, one on top of the other for like depth sensing.

• 28:04Speaker 01

  M8.

• 28:05Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 28:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:05Speaker 03

  Whatever happened with that?

• 28:07Speaker 01

It was, I mean, it was a gimmick.

• 28:10Nilay Patel?

I mean, HTC and the cameras is like, we did another video with Marquez. It should go up.

• 28:14Speaker 02

I think you're being hard on the design of the M9. I think it's fine.

• 28:17Nilay Patel?

Yeah, it's, it's just the year of the ugly. Like, we all just have to, like, ride it out. Like, like, the 70s are like here, yeah, in phone design. You know what I mean?

• 28:25Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 28:26Nilay Patel?

It's like, oh, bell bottoms are back and these phones are ugly.

• 28:28Speaker 01

  And these phones are massive.

• 28:30Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 28:30Speaker 01

There's, there was a whole two-year sequence of phone companies copying Lightro. And now Lightro is like basically teetering on the version not existing. And now nobody cares about depth sensing anymore.

• 28:41Nilay Patel?

No one ever did. I will say depth sensing immediately went into hype debt.

• 28:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 28:46Nilay Patel?

Everyone's like, why would I do that?

• 28:49Speaker 01

They need a round of hype funding.

• 28:53Nilay Patel?

  Or just funding.

• 28:57Nilay Patel?

  Alright.

• 28:58Speaker 02

I'm trying to make a hype morning show.

• 28:59Speaker 01

You know, you know, tomorrow, a group of 18 year olds is going to pitch Y Combinator.

• 29:05Speaker 01

  The whatever hype, whatever.

• 29:07Nilay Patel?

  The hype bank?

• 29:07Speaker 01

  The hype bank, yeah.

• 29:09Nilay Patel?

I mean, was there anything else to say about the M9? I mean, like, so there's.

• 29:12Speaker 01

When does it come out and how much is it?

• 29:14Nilay Patel?

  Here's a story I was saying, like.

• 29:15Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 29:17Nilay Patel?

We did, we, in this, I think we'll go up tomorrow, we did like a Marquez behind the scenes, like, what's it like to be MKBHD a show? And he is like, I like to look at Twitter and see what people want to know about the phones before I shoot my videos. And there's just this scene where it's just people asking him endlessly how the camera is. Just nonstop, how's the camera, how's the camera? It's like, super funny. Because that's all, that's all that really matters, like, the holy grail is a nice Android phone with a good camera.

• 29:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:43Nilay Patel?

Right, that's what we all want.

• 29:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:45Nilay Patel?

And like, if the S6 had a great camera, maybe I would get that and then immediately try to flash stock Android on there. If the M9 had a great camera, that would be like, we would all make that decision.

• 29:57Speaker 01

But here's the problem, so, um, and we found this out the hard way in the past, uh, stock Android is part of the problem with these cameras, because there's so much software involved in making a good photo, that you have to leave the crap software on there to get the good pictures.

• 30:11Nilay Patel?

Yeah, but you don't like, that's a pretty disingenuous argument, right? Because between Google and, oh, actually, there's something else we need to talk about from NBC, uh, the like, Google's wireless network thing.

• 30:22Speaker 01

  And the tiny round phone.

• 30:24Nilay Patel?

  The runcible man.

• 30:28Nilay Patel?

And the million garbage smartwatches that came out.

• 30:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:31Nilay Patel?

Anyway, but, but what I'm saying is like. Like, I get it, so you need some image processing on there, you need some firmware stuff, but you could also just leave out the other crap.

• 30:40Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 30:40Nilay Patel?

  But they just won't.

• 30:41Speaker 01

  They don't, yeah.

• 30:42Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 30:43Speaker 02

  So there's a problem.

• 30:43Speaker 01

Presumably on the Google Play edition. Yeah, where, where is the Google Play edition of the S6?

• 30:48Nilay Patel?

Right, so the Play editions and, and Nexus, like, it's very confusing, like, nobody knows what's gonna happen.

• 30:52Speaker 01

What the hell is happening with, yeah, where's the Nexus program right now?

• 30:55Speaker 02

  Nexus 6.

• 30:56Speaker 01

  Nexus 6.

• 30:57Speaker 02

  And the Nexus 9.

• 30:59Nilay Patel?

But the Nexus 6 just doesn't count, like, the Nexus 6 is like, literally, it's like, it's like a warning shot.

• 31:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:05Nilay Patel?

To smartphone manufacturers, like, this is too big.

• 31:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:08Nilay Patel?

  Like, that's all that is.

• 31:09Speaker 02

It's the same size as a 6 plus.

• 31:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:11Nilay Patel?

  No, it's way thicker.

• 31:13Speaker 02

  It's thicker.

• 31:13Speaker 01

  It's all thicker, yeah.

• 31:14Nilay Patel?

Yeah, but it's, I mean, that's, it's just way thicker.

• 31:17Speaker 02

  I will say that.

• 31:18Nilay Patel?

  It's a phone that's too big.

• 31:18Speaker 02

After using a six plus for a while, going back to this, this Moto X, like this feels tiny. It feels just itty bitty. I would, I would rather go back to Nexus 6 than this.

• 31:26Speaker 01

You know what's hilariously small now is the 5 and 5S.

• 31:29Speaker 03

Yeah, and you know what's even smaller than that is a 4 and 4S.

• 31:31Nilay Patel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 31:32Speaker 03

  It is pathetic.

• 31:32Nilay Patel?

No, people with iPhone 4s, you can just walk right up to them and stare them in the face and like, "You're dumb. Your phone's dumb." And they don't even, they're like, "Yeah, I know." They're like, "No, they're not even that." They're like, "Yep, this is, this is a tiny little garbage drawer, guys. I'm switching back to the Veer."

• 31:47Speaker 03

There it is, the pop mention.

• 31:48Nilay Patel?

I've got it, I've got it, I've got it in my desk drawer, man.

• 31:51Speaker 01

I was somewhere in the city the other day and I saw someone using an iPhone 4 or 4S, I couldn't tell. But it was so, so thoroughly destructed that it looked like it was unintentionally steampunk. Like, the entire top, like, basically the entire display was missing. Like, the glass was gone, the display, like, you could see little tiny portions of the screen. And they were still trying to use it, which, I mean, it's common for people to use phones with shattered screens, but this was extreme.

• 32:20Speaker 02

Okay, so we gotta talk about Sundar talking, he, they, he basically, he confirmed, well, he confirmed a few things recently. I mean, one, he confirmed that photos and Hangouts are getting pulled away from Google Plus. And so, streams are gonna be on their own, which is great because Google Photos is an amazing product that is just weighted down by the garbage of Google Plus.

• 32:40Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 32:41Speaker 02

But the bigger thing is, he basically confirmed that Google's planning on launching MVNO. The rumor has been that it's gonna be with both Sprint and T-Mobile in some weird way, but that his real goal is to try and, like, integrate Wi-Fi better and, and, like, abstract all of the, you know, carrier stuff and have it all work more seamlessly on the phone, I guess.

• 33:00Speaker 01

And he wants it to be kind of a Nexus carrier, like, it would be a proving ground for wireless technologies more than a mainstream product, right? Like, he's, he seems to be very careful, like, he's kind of, uh...

• 33:13Speaker 02

He said we don't intend to be a carrier at scale.

• 33:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, treading very lightly.

• 33:16Speaker 02

Yeah. Uh, he's like, "We're trying to show innovations like calls automatically reconnecting when someone drops on one end." Those are the kinds of ideas we're pursuing.

• 33:24Speaker 01

You know who already does that? Republic Wireless.

• 33:25Nilay Patel?

  Right. How does that work?

• 33:27Speaker 01

Uh, so when you make a call with someone on Republic, you don't actually connect directly to them. You connect to a server that then calls the other person. So if you drop, the other person is still connected to the server. So then your phone can automatically reconnect to the server and the call is maintained.

• 33:45Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 33:45Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 33:46Speaker 02

And they do, they do really, they also do

• 33:48Nilay Patel?

  And Edward Snowden.

• 33:49Speaker 02

  Wi-Fi handoffs, right?

• 33:50Speaker 01

Yeah. And they're Sprint only, but yeah.

• 33:53Nilay Patel?

  Right.

• 33:53Speaker 01

And they, uh, they offer the Moto X.

• 33:55Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 33:56Nilay Patel?

I mean, that definitely sounds like Edward Snowden's worst nightmare. Like all of your calls routed through a central server that the NSA is clearly monitoring.

• 34:03Speaker 01

Well, I mean, that's Google Voice too, right? I mean, the, the people who started Republic came from Grand Central.

• 34:08Nilay Patel?

  Oh, really?

• 34:08Speaker 01

Yeah. So it's all, you know.

• 34:10Nilay Patel?

I mean, I, so I, so MVNOs, right?

• 34:13Speaker 02

  Mobile Virtual Network.

• 34:14Nilay Patel?

I always say MNVOs, but MVNOs, um, which is basically just you wholesale spectrum or service in many cases from somebody else and we saw it on your end and have like failed a lot.

• 34:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:26Nilay Patel?

  Yep.

• 34:26Speaker 01

There was, there was a moment like in the, the mid aughts where they were huge and then they all died.

• 34:31Nilay Patel?

Like ESPN had one, like literally everybody was like

• 34:34Speaker 01

  ESPN Mobile, Disney Mobile.

• 34:37Nilay Patel?

It was just like, you know, people like mobile phones. You know what they love? Sprint's excellent network quality. Well, you know what they want? My branding.

• 34:45Nilay Patel?

  No, they don't.

• 34:46Speaker 01

Now, Amped, you remember Amped Mobile?

• 34:47Nilay Patel?

It's like all the, they all failed, but there's still a handful that are huge and they're all generally owned by Sprint. Right?

• 34:53Speaker 01

Well, there's, there's Trackphone, which is owned by

• 34:56Nilay Patel?

  It's its own thing, right?

• 34:56Speaker 01

  America Mobile, I believe.

• 34:58Nilay Patel?

Right. But so Trackphone is also owned by, but they, they're still a wholesaler, but all the rest of them, Boost and that.

• 35:03Speaker 01

  Virgin Mobile.

• 35:04Nilay Patel?

Virgin. They all kind of run on Sprint as far as I can tell.

• 35:06Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, well, so there's simple wireless. Uh, and what's the other one? Uh, simple is on T-Mobile, I want to say?

• 35:13Nilay Patel?

Right. Well, the only reason I make this point is like Google coming in there and being like, we want to make our own network and use our own technology. That to me is like a really weird, that I don't think that has ever happened before. Where the tech company, the device company comes in and says, we want to be the telecom company. And they want to like replace the carrier stuff.

• 35:36Speaker 01

There were many rumors that Apple wanted to do something in that vein.

• 35:41Speaker 02

And decided it was just too much of a hassle.

• 35:42Speaker 01

  Right.

• 35:42Speaker 02

Yeah. And this was back in oh seven, oh six.

• 35:45Speaker 01

Yeah. And so obviously technology has changed since then. Um, and Google doesn't want to do this at scale, so they claim.

• 35:53Speaker 02

What does that even mean? Like, I feel like this and the Nexus program. Like, this has always been my pet theory. I know it's not true, but it's that they don't actually care about selling it to consumers. They just get real mad about having to use the stuff. And so they're like, we're just gonna use the stuff that we make. And so they only, they're only making this MVNO so that they have something for like, Google employees to use.

• 36:13Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 36:13Speaker 02

Just like as a perk. And then, oh yeah, we'll sell it to consumers too, because we made it.

• 36:17Nilay Patel?

Well, that's, I mean, that's like. I agree with that only in a sense that.

• 36:21Speaker 02

  I mean, it's not, I don't actually believe that.

• 36:23Nilay Patel?

Well, I mean, I would love to know, like, I would think what Google should do is they should put up a status page that tells you what phones Sundar is using.

• 36:32Nilay Patel?

Right? And like, because he's always gonna pick the best one.

• 36:35Speaker 03

  What phone is he using?

• 36:36Speaker 02

I'm sure he's using. No, that's not true. He loves the Android one. He loves using the low end stuff all the time.

• 36:42Nilay Patel?

  Really?

• 36:42Speaker 02

Yeah. But a lot of employees.

• 36:44Nilay Patel?

  What?

• 36:45Speaker 02

A lot of Google employees, and I know this from, just from personal experience and encountering them. A lot of them are still using Nexus 5s.

• 36:54Nilay Patel?

  I see 5s everywhere.

• 36:55Speaker 02

  I see 5s and I see M8s, M8 Google Play additions.

• 36:58Speaker 03

  What is Matthias using?

• 37:00Speaker 02

Gotta be a 6? Yeah, Nexus 6, maybe.

• 37:03Speaker 03

  Or the next one.

• 37:04Nilay Patel?

Gee, that's what we need. We need an employee status check.

• 37:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:07Nilay Patel?

Like, what is the Android team using right now?

• 37:09Speaker 02

Yeah. Well, I mean, they might think that's a privacy violation.

• 37:12Nilay Patel?

  Sure.

• 37:12Speaker 02

Oh, I see what you did there. Ironic.

• 37:17Nilay Patel?

I gotta, I gotta read this thing.

• 37:19Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 37:20Nilay Patel?

Wow. I just, that joke put me into Hype Deck. Hype Tech.

• 37:26Speaker 02

Wow. Deck is a great name for like a PowerPoint competitor.

• 37:30Speaker 03

There it is, that's it, the VC. They're going, they're hitting up Y Combinator.

• 37:33Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 37:35Speaker 03

Your new way to design hype? Whatever.

• 37:38Nilay Patel?

  And that's our ad, everybody.

• 37:40Speaker 03

  Do the thing.

• 37:42Speaker 03

  I give up.

• 37:45Nilay Patel?

That's great. Alright, you guys ready?

• 37:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:48Nilay Patel?

  Enter the ad zone.

• 37:49Speaker 03

  Ready as we'll ever be.

  Yeah?

• 38:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:22Nilay Patel?

Yeah. It's like building a website.

• 38:23Speaker 03

  It kind of.

• 38:24Nilay Patel?

Yeah, was it, it was easy? Was it good?

• 38:27Speaker 03

  It was pretty easy.

• 38:27Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 40:00Nilay Patel?

There we go. Now we're out of the ad zone. We need a, we need a reversing.

• 40:04Speaker 03

  Whoosh.

• 40:05Nilay Patel?

  There you go. Got it.

• 40:12Speaker 03

You're looking at me because I don't know what that music is.

• 40:14Speaker 02

You don't know what that is?

• 40:15Nilay Patel?

  You don't know what that?

• 40:18Nilay Patel?

  You've never seen Wayne's World?

• 40:20Speaker 02

  Come on.

• 40:23Nilay Patel?

Look at the look of the blank stare on his face.

• 40:25Speaker 02

Do you know what Wayne's World is?

• 40:28Speaker 03

  Really?

• 40:28Nilay Patel?

  Kind of.

• 40:30Speaker 02

It's okay. It's okay to not know what Wayne's World is.

• 40:34Speaker 03

  Really?

• 40:35Speaker 02

Yes, it's okay to not know what Wayne's World is.

• 40:36Nilay Patel?

  That one is like important.

• 40:38Speaker 03

Is it like, there's like a game?

• 40:39Speaker 02

There's like a video game, right?

• 40:40Nilay Patel?

  Wayne's World is not important.

• 40:41Speaker 03

  Oh, this is that.

• 40:42Nilay Patel?

Did you just say it's a game show?

• 40:43Speaker 03

No, video game. It was a video game.

• 40:46Speaker 03

  It's just... No, there's, there's definitely a Wayne's World video game.

• 40:49Nilay Patel?

Do not engage. It was, it was, it wasn't a video game. Turn off. It was a double-length EP of reggae music.

• 40:57Speaker 03

It was, it was a Mike Myers. Oh, I've seen it. Yeah, I'm on the Googles, dude.

• 41:02Nilay Patel?

  Come on, man.

• 41:03Speaker 03

  Ninety-two.

• 41:03Speaker 02

Here's, here's the thing. You have to let us lie to you about things you don't know about. That's the part of the deal.

• 41:09Speaker 03

This looks like one of those like, like those cheesy eighty movies, eighty's movies where everyone has the long hair.

• 41:15Speaker 02

  Have you watched anything yet?

• 41:16Speaker 03

  No.

• 41:16Speaker 02

  God damn it.

• 41:17Nilay Patel?

Have you seen The Breakfast Club?

• 41:18Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 41:19Nilay Patel?

  Okay.

• 41:19Speaker 03

I'm proud of myself for that one.

• 41:20Nilay Patel?

Because it got remastered. I want, I want to have a Verge movie night.

• 41:22Speaker 03

Yes, I totally want to watch that.

• 41:24Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, we just watched it.

• 41:25Speaker 03

  In HD. In HD.

• 41:26Speaker 02

Just watched Wrath of Khan last night with the guys from our video team.

• 41:30Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 41:31Speaker 02

  Movie holds up.

• 41:32Nilay Patel?

  Really?

• 41:33Speaker 02

  It looks really good.

• 41:34Speaker 03

  What movie?

• 41:35Speaker 02

  Wrath of Khan.

• 41:37Nilay Patel?

  Nope.

• 41:37Speaker 02

  Get out.

• 41:38Nilay Patel?

  Nope.

• 41:39Speaker 02

  Nope.

• 41:40Nilay Patel?

  Nope.

• 41:41Speaker 03

Oh, this is some like bust cheesy, oh, it's Star Trek.

• 41:45Speaker 02

  Come on.

• 41:46Nilay Patel?

  Oh, my god.

• 41:49Speaker 02

Do not. You can, you can call Star Trek cheesy, that's fine, but you cannot front with Wrath of Khan.

• 41:54Nilay Patel?

  Wow.

• 41:55Speaker 03

I literally have never even heard of this Star Trek film.

• 41:59Nilay Patel?

  All right, we're gonna stop.

• 42:00Speaker 03

  Let's, let's just go.

• 42:01Nilay Patel?

  The Giva Auto Show.

• 42:01Speaker 03

  The Cars, Chris.

• 42:02Speaker 02

Let me ask you a question.

• 42:03Nilay Patel?

  Sweet Lambos.

• 42:03Speaker 02

And I, I'd like to put this to the audience and, you know, just tweet at me with your vote. Would you prefer to talk about cars or would you prefer to listen to Dieter killing Sam?

• 42:15Nilay Patel?

One or the other thing is gonna happen here. No, Chris, the Gene Valtteri show is going on as well.

• 42:21Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 42:21Nilay Patel?

  Vlad is there.

• 42:22Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 42:23Nilay Patel?

He's gone. We covered it a little bit. What's going on? What's going on at the show?

• 42:27Speaker 01

So this was a supercar marathon. Like, every conceivable, extremely exotic, unaffordable, unattainable vehicle debuted at this show. And I think Vlad was a little, sort of looking for, starstruck. Like, you know, he was just, he was wandering up to like, you know, Ferrari 488s and just getting in. He's like, oh. I like, he's like, when I shut the door, the sound it made was very exotic. Yeah, he had a good, he had a good time. But so, let's just talk about a few of the really important things that happened. So the, the last Veyron was unveiled at the show.

• 43:11Speaker 01

This was the Bugatti supercar. One of the most important supercars of the last 25 years. 16 cylinder engine, over 1,000 horsepower, holds the, well, technically it doesn't at this point, I think, but it, for a very long time, held the, the speed record for a production vehicle. And the, the 450th car, which is the last one they made, is sort of a play on the color scheme of the first one. So they had serial number one and 450 nose to nose on display, which was a really cool display. So Vlad got some great pictures of that.

• 43:46Nilay Patel?

He's tearing up a little bit.

• 43:47Speaker 01

It was, it was an emotional display, I'm not gonna lie. Like, the, the most important, in my opinion, the most important hypercar to debut.

• 43:57Nilay Patel?

  No, no, not hypercar.

• 43:59Speaker 01

Hypercar. Hypercar is a thing. You look it up, it's a real term. But he also, he also saw the, the Lamborghini LP750-4 Super Veloce.

• 44:13Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, that thing's beautiful.

• 44:14Speaker 01

  Which is beautiful.

• 44:15Nilay Patel?

I would say the Lambos are better than Ferraris.

• 44:16Speaker 01

Oh, snap. That's, that's like some Apple versus Google-ish right there.

• 44:23Speaker 01

He saw the Ferrari 488, which we talked about, which is the, it's a basically a turbocharged version of the 458. He saw the Koenigsegg Regera, which Regera, I'm not sure how it's pronounced, unfortunately.

• 44:37Speaker 03

  That thing is nuts.

• 44:39Speaker 01

It is, yeah, it is like beyond, it is next level bonkers. It has three electric motors and a twin turbo V8 that combined put out around 1,500 horsepower. It's stupid. Like, it's just straight up stupid. And they're gonna make 80 of them. It'll do something in the, in the range of 250 miles an hour.

• 45:03Speaker 03

  It's crazy.

• 45:03Speaker 01

  It'll go.

• 45:04Speaker 03

  In 20 seconds.

• 45:05Speaker 01

It'll go, yeah, it'll go 0 to 400 kilometers an hour in under 20 seconds, they're saying. So it's just, it's, I mean, the numbers are mind boggling. And the Quant F, which uses a, basically a science fiction fuel that may or may not exist.

• 45:22Speaker 03

  And then the battery also.

• 45:23Nilay Patel?

Wait, wait, wait, go ahead. Explain this one to me.

• 45:25Speaker 01

It's some ionic. So if you, if you read their literature, they refer to it as an ionic fluid that is similar to water.

• 45:36Speaker 03

  Come on. It's a Gatorade.

• 45:38Nilay Patel?

No. Yeah, it doesn't have electrolytes.

• 45:41Speaker 01

Wait, what is, what is ionic? What?

• 45:44Nilay Patel?

  Wait, are, okay, nevermind.

• 45:47Speaker 01

No, there is actually some science behind it. So it uses what's called a flow battery, which is a largely theoretical technology that has never really been applied, as far as I know, in EVs before. So it's a company called Nano Flow Cell that has been working on this car for a few years. The car exists, but the drivetrain, as far as I know, doesn't really.

• 46:06Nilay Patel?

It's just a series of question marks and then wheels.

• 46:08Speaker 01

Right. And the, and the infrastructure for it certainly doesn't exist, but they're saying that existing gas stations could be easily retrofitted to support this mysterious ionic fluid.

• 46:19Nilay Patel?

Just like water bottles. Non-deionized water.

• 46:24Speaker 01

So Vlad checked out that car.

• 46:27Speaker 01

Which goes zero to 16 in 2.8 seconds, which is supercar level. There's zero to 60 in 2.8 theoretical seconds.

• 46:37Speaker 01

And oh, oh, and in my opinion, the most beautiful car of the show, the Bentley EXP10 Speed 6, which is just, it, I mean, it's, it's, it's gorgeous. Like you just need to check out our photo essay. Vlad did a great job. He shot videos for all these cars. Check them out.

• 46:53Nilay Patel?

Yeah. I mean, the thing I think is interesting about the auto show is like, was last week, two weeks ago, we were talking about Apple and Google and all the cars they're gonna make. And it's just, you know, I get it. They're gonna disrupt the industry, but it takes a long time to like, deliver a car at an auto show that can do to people what these cars can do.

• 47:12Speaker 01

Right. Yeah. Well, and furthermore, I would argue that Google and Apple probably aren't trying to do, they're not trying to get the emotional rise out of people.

• 47:21Nilay Patel?

I don't know, man. Apple Car Edition.

• 47:24Speaker 01

  Apple Car Edition, solid gold.

• 47:27Speaker 03

I have a counter to your, to your, what you said, Eli. What would happen? Just, let's just shoot, you know, if Google brought its self-driving car to the Geneva Motor Show?

• 47:37Nilay Patel?

People would not care. No, they would look at it. It'd be interesting. Yeah. Right?

• 47:42Speaker 01

But it also looks like, like a taxi.

• 47:44Speaker 03

  Toy. Yeah.

• 47:46Nilay Patel?

I'm saying like, that's great. And I, you know, like Lexus brought its big self-driving cocoon to CES, right?

• 47:53Speaker 01

  No, Mercedes.

• 47:54Nilay Patel?

  It was Mercedes.

• 47:55Speaker 03

And everyone was like, it's super futuristic looking.

• 47:58Nilay Patel?

Right. And that was great. And that's cool. And like, that's interesting. I'm saying like, there's, here, I'll, I'll just give people the stat. Right? This is a wild stat we noticed today. Videos of cars, when, when we put, like, here's an article, like, look at this Lambo. And then like you read it and there's a photo essay. Those videos, the click-through rate is like 10x of like a phone.

• 48:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, because cars are sexy.

• 48:22Nilay Patel?

Right. But like, it's, that's crazy to me. Like, so if you, like literally the Samsung Galaxy S6 and like, check out this Ferrari. Are on our page right now and people open those articles and they are 10 times more likely to watch a video of a car than a video of a phone and that is crazy to me because the cars have they literally emotionally like change you they're like yeah I like I want that or that looks fast and I I just don't think like the tech companies uh

• 48:50Speaker 01

  What you're saying is that

• 48:51Nilay Patel?

Know how to do that and I don't think the tech companies even want to do that

• 48:54Speaker 01

  Right now they don't

• 48:55Nilay Patel?

Right they're trying to like totally commodify transportation so like right robot taxis are driving you everywhere and that's like really good and helpful right but I just think there is probably it you know it's weird because I bet all the tech companies the tech company CEOs are the only people can afford these cars yeah it's true so I think they get it but they also like I don't think they are even trying they're gonna try to compete with what these cars can do to

• 49:20Speaker 01

Well the cars the cars are such large canvases for a talented designer to do something amazing a phone you know smartphone a modern smartphone fundamentally is a glass rectangle

• 49:30Nilay Patel?

Unless you're making the sweet runcible

• 49:35Nilay Patel?

Buy that round phone So I can make Eli's point imagine a world close your eyes Eli

• 49:42Speaker 01

  I'm not closing my eyes

• 49:44Nilay Patel?

This is for Eli Fine I'm gonna be Eli for a second Where the iPhone doesn't exist and you had to use Android

• 49:51Speaker 03

  I would throw up

• 49:52Nilay Patel?

How would you throw it'd be great yeah okay now cool world close your eyes It's a great world Instead of imagining a world where the iPhone never existed I want you to imagine a world that you live in where the Ford Mustang never existed

• 50:06Speaker 01

That's the point but then you just like Camaro's instead

• 50:11Nilay Patel?

Death death to everyone No I don't know I don't know

• 50:17Speaker 01

It just made you really sad

• 50:18Nilay Patel?

That would be sad for me

• 50:19Speaker 03

I think it would be it would be super interesting and weird if we got to a point where the only two types of cars were like like Toyota Corolla self-driving cars are like these hypercars on the road

• 50:30Nilay Patel?

  No that would be awesome

• 50:32Speaker 03

It's like one out of every hundred

• 50:34Nilay Patel?

Dude that is the future I want to live in

• 50:36Speaker 03

It's like it's like everyone just like

• 50:39Speaker 03

And then all of a sudden, there's just like this loud ass for Earl. Yeah, I guess we'll.

• 50:42Speaker 02

  No, a sweet ass Lambo.

• 50:44Speaker 03

Fine, fine. But will it be, will it be a gasoline engine or everything's electric?

• 50:49Speaker 02

Run on ion fuel, right? Liquid ion.

• 50:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:53Nilay Patel?

That's the world I want to live in, right? Like, most of the time, it's like very boring, very like, I just need to get to work.

• 50:58Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:59Nilay Patel?

And that's like basically the world I live in now, right?

• 51:01Speaker 03

  Right.

• 51:01Nilay Patel?

I push the button and the Uber shows up. I'm like, awesome, a Toyota Highlander. This is gonna be a great motoring experience.

• 51:07Speaker 03

All of a sudden, there's not gonna be a human in the car and you'll be able to like sip your whiskey while you're on the go and, you know.

• 51:11Nilay Patel?

Wait, you're saying the person prevents me from drinking on the go?

• 51:17Nilay Patel?

Is he the police? What kind of Ubers are you in?

• 51:20Speaker 03

Look, all I'm saying is that the Ubers of the future are going to be hella leisure-y.

• 51:27Speaker 03

Like, you'll be able to just like grab your girl and be like, yo, let's... I don't know why this is so funny. This is, this is a future that is actually tangible and we will get there, right? Like, it's like, you just, you just, you just did some pregame at your apartment, right?

• 51:46Nilay Patel?

No, I get it. Sam, it's not the picture you're painting that's the problem. It's the title you wrote underneath it. Ubers of the future will be hella leisure.

• 51:59Nilay Patel?

So first of all, that implies that Ubers of the present are not hella leisure.

• 52:05Speaker 03

They have like water bottles and gum and like stickers, sure.

• 52:10Nilay Patel?

  Wait, what? Stickers?

• 52:17Speaker 03

I'm gonna die. I'm gonna perish.

• 52:19Nilay Patel?

All right, we gotta, we gotta spend five minutes previewing next week.

• 52:25Speaker 02

  Uh, so, yeah.

• 52:27Nilay Patel?

  Hello, leisure.

• 52:31Nilay Patel?

Uh, yeah, getting a little, alright.

• 52:33Speaker 01

I agree with you, by the way.

• 52:35Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 52:35Speaker 03

  It'll be great.

• 52:36Nilay Patel?

I'll drink whiskey with you. You and me just donked in an Uber in a robot.

• 52:42Speaker 01

Wait, Sam, Sam, pipe check leisure.

• 52:45Nilay Patel?

  It's a concept.

• 52:47Speaker 03

  It's, it's, it's, you're that, you're like, you're, you're Twitter bio. You're a man of leisure.

• 52:51Speaker 01

No, well, that was my old one. Now I'm a man of spectacle.

• 52:54Nilay Patel?

  Oh.

• 52:55Speaker 01

I'm changing the words every so often.

• 52:56Nilay Patel?

Hell, a spectacle. Ubers in the future. Hell, a spectacle. They have like fireworks shooting, marching bands playing. It's gonna be great.

• 53:06Speaker 01

Ground effects, like neon lights under the cars.

• 53:08Nilay Patel?

Uh, I find myself watching documentaries about like super tricked out Japanese supercars all the time.

• 53:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:17Nilay Patel?

And they, the people in them are like, they're cra- cause they're basically like Yakuza guys.

• 53:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:21Nilay Patel?

Who are like, I've wanted this life since I was a baby.

• 53:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:24Nilay Patel?

I saw this Lamborghini with ground effects.

• 53:27Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 53:27Nilay Patel?

And I knew I'd be a criminal. And it's like, no one ever probes the like A to B connection.

• 53:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:33Nilay Patel?

  Well, because it's so obvious.

• 53:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:36Nilay Patel?

You don't need to probe it. It's just there.

• 53:37Speaker 01

You're, you're describing Tokyo Drift, by the way.

• 53:39Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 53:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:41Nilay Patel?

  Well, yeah.

• 53:42Speaker 01

Some of my favorite gifs of all time are of Japanese supercars with ground effects.

• 53:48Nilay Patel?

  Ooh. Well, that's.

• 53:49Speaker 01

  I'll share some with you.

• 53:50Nilay Patel?

Yeah, we're recording this podcast on a Thursday.

• 53:54Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 53:55Nilay Patel?

Uh, hopefully you're listening to it before Monday because Monday is Apple's quote, "spring forward", unquote, event. Uh, we're expecting a bunch of stuff with the Apple Watch. Like they're, they're gonna have to trot out a bunch of developers and like show a bunch of apps and show more of how the thing works.

• 54:09Speaker 01

And we've talked about, cause we got the invite last week right before the show, right?

• 54:12Nilay Patel?

  Was it last week?

• 54:13Speaker 01

During the, during the FCC announcement.

• 54:15Nilay Patel?

During the FCC announcement. By the way, Apple, what are you doing?

• 54:18Speaker 01

  Going after the FCC.

• 54:19Nilay Patel?

No, we're fine. Um, no, so we, we've talked about this a little bit, but Dieter and I are going, Casey's coming with us to live blog.

• 54:24Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 54:25Nilay Patel?

Um, we'll obviously be there with video.

• 54:27Speaker 01

By the way, Casey Newton live blogs, if you aren't familiar with them, are really good.

• 54:32Nilay Patel?

Yeah, it's good. It's gonna be fun. Um, I mean, just, it's funny cause I have to like behave myself so Casey can do his thing, but I'll, I'll see what I can do. Um.

• 54:40Speaker 02

But anyway, so what Dieter's saying, I think is correct. Like, this is the moment for Apple to trot out as many developers as they can to show you like, what the watch can do, why you want to buy it. I will say that, just sort of in conversations, because now it's like happenings, we've been talking like, hey, I'm going to the California people, I'll watch. And the number one thing people say is like, how much does it cost? What does it do?

• 55:00Nilay Patel?

  Yep.

• 55:01Speaker 02

And I'm like, it's like $349 for the sport, the basic one. And basically that is met with like, universal derision.

• 55:07Speaker 03

Yeah. No one knows how much this thing costs.

• 55:10Nilay Patel?

No, but we know, we know the basic one.

• 55:12Speaker 03

The base, right? But like, if I'm like, I want the stainless steel, 42, whatever it is.

• 55:16Nilay Patel?

Right, but I will say that $349 for the sport is like, great, considering the fucking like Pebble Time Steel is $299.

• 55:23Speaker 01

  No, it's $250, isn't it?

• 55:24Nilay Patel?

Huh? No, I think the baby, the regular Pebble Time.

• 55:28Speaker 02

No, the regular Pebble Time is like,

• 55:30Speaker 03

  $150, right?

• 55:30Speaker 02

$199. Uh, but then you can get it in Kickstarter for $170 if you were in early.

• 55:35Speaker 03

  Wait.

• 55:35Speaker 02

And then it's $250 for the Pebble Time Steel, I think.

• 55:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, I think it's $250.

• 55:38Speaker 02

  The Pebble Time Steel.

• 55:39Nilay Patel?

I mean, that's still like, just too much money.

• 55:41Speaker 02

So what's gonna have to happen is they're gonna have to sell last year's model at like, a hundred bucks off, right? Because otherwise, they're, are they gonna do the same model?

• 55:50Speaker 03

  Last year's model of what?

• 55:50Speaker 02

Of the watch. Same way that you can get last, you used to be able to get last year's iPhone for cheaper. I wonder if they're gonna do that with the watch.

• 55:55Speaker 03

Well, they release a watch once a year, though. Is that gonna be on the once a year cycle?

• 55:59Speaker 02

Uh, it's a great question. I don't know. The other thing that Apple has to do, uh, they won't, we're not gonna know about the year cycle thing.

• 56:05Speaker 03

  Right.

• 56:05Speaker 02

But what Apple does have to do is they've got three models and like, 80 bands, and they need to give a coherent, like, story of the tiers and the pricing for those tiers.

• 56:16Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 56:17Speaker 02

Like, they have to tell that story in such a way where like, it's not confusing.

• 56:20Speaker 03

Do you get the watch by itself, and then you have to spend more money on bands?

• 56:25Speaker 02

See, this is what Apple needs to show.

• 56:27Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 56:28Speaker 02

  To explain.

• 56:28Nilay Patel?

So this is, I think they're gonna spend a lot of time on like, why to buy it, which is like, the app story. And then, seriously, just how to buy it.

• 56:36Speaker 02

Yeah, I bet you that there's gonna be a bunch of time of like, this, they're gonna like, if they wanted to, they could like, bring out Angela Rentson like, a fake.

• 56:45Nilay Patel?

  In a fake store.

• 56:46Speaker 02

Right, and be like, this is what it's gonna look like. They could do a skit. Yeah. I would love to see a skit. I think that'd be great. I'd love to see an Apple skit. What if, what if they did some improv?

• 56:56Nilay Patel?

It's like Tim Cook walking in the store, being like, hmm. Like, picking up a MacBook.

• 57:00Speaker 02

It's like Samsung and Apple have just switched.

• 57:03Speaker 01

Yeah, because the sixth event was like understated, right?

• 57:05Nilay Patel?

  Yeah, it was very same.

• 57:06Speaker 01

And now Apple just goes full like flair.

• 57:07Nilay Patel?

Full crazy, yeah. And like Tim Cook is like, "And underneath the store, a full orchestra."

• 57:14Nilay Patel?

  Dancing children from the sky.

• 57:17Speaker 03

  The Zole.

• 57:17Nilay Patel?

Yeah, that would be the greatest.

• 57:19Speaker 02

Oh my god, what if Apple brought, brought back Zole?

• 57:23Speaker 03

  It was so 2011.

• 57:24Nilay Patel?

Oh yeah, Zole's name is literally 2011. They can't. It'd be Zolls. His name would be Zolls.

• 57:31Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 57:33Speaker 02

Sounds like it's a huge opportunity to like have lots of Zolls. Zolls, like 10 of them on the stage. Damn it.

• 57:41Nilay Patel?

Oh god, that kid was so terrible. Anyway, so there's that. And then, it's weird because we've been talking about it sort of all day. I believe that we'll probably also see this MacBook. Like, we've been hearing about it, we've seen, there's renders floating around. There's 9 to 5 had a refresh 13 inch MacBook today. Like, I think they're gonna do some Mac stuff at this event.

• 58:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, I think so too.

• 58:02Nilay Patel?

  Which is interesting because-

• 58:03Speaker 01

And we think they're not gonna do iPad stuff. Sorry, continue.

• 58:06Nilay Patel?

Well, that's the thing, like, it's weird. It's weird that the iPad is like, that, that has been...

• 58:13Nilay Patel?

Just in general, like, Apple just doesn't talk about it a lot. Like, they just kinda, it's, the MacBook business is growing, there's a lot of opportunity there. This watch is a big deal, obviously the, the phone last year was a big deal. We're in the midst of that cycle.

• 58:26Speaker 01

  And phones are getting bigger.

• 58:28Nilay Patel?

Phones are getting bigger, and this, the, just to me, the iPad is just like the forgotten... Literally, the, I, the most I used an iPad in the past three days was our telepresence robot. Like, I laughed at Chris talking to it today.

• 58:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:42Nilay Patel?

And that was like the most I've ever interacted with an iPad.

• 58:44Speaker 03

I was talking to James, not to the robot.

• 58:46Nilay Patel?

No, the, the thing about the robot is everyone just calls it the ro- it's like, it doesn't matter who inhabits the robot. The robot has its own personality and-

• 58:53Speaker 01

And it's a little drunk, it falls over sometimes.

• 58:55Nilay Patel?

It's like, just tipping around. This new one is way faster than the old one.

• 58:59Speaker 01

Uh, but it's still very unstable. I had to catch James a couple times.

• 59:03Nilay Patel?

So very, I mean, I will say our telepresence row, it's a review unit. We're reviewing it. It's a double robotics. And it is basically an iPad on a Segway.

• 59:12Speaker 01

  Yeah, yes.

• 59:12Nilay Patel?

Uh, which is adorable. Like, it's just an adorable thing. Like, it's kind, it definitely feels like it's a kid that hasn't grown up all the way.

• 59:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:21Nilay Patel?

Because like other telepresence, there's like big corporate, like monster ones. And they, but this one is definitely like a bunch of, bunch of just lovable kids.

• 59:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:30Speaker 02

  It's, it's like, it's an endearing robot.

• 59:33Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 59:33Speaker 02

  It endears itself to you.

• 59:35Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 59:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:36Speaker 01

Because it needs your help all the time.

• 59:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 59:38Speaker 03

Uh, before we, before we get lost.

• 59:40Nilay Patel?

We, we actually gotta get lost for real.

• 59:42Speaker 03

I just, I just wanna make sure these people know where and when to tune in. Apple event is taking place on Monday at 1:00 PM Eastern, 10:00 AM Pacific. Uh, on theverge.com. Just go to theverge.com. It'll be in the hero. Um, we're live blogging. We'll have live analysis.

• 59:59Nilay Patel?

Right. And there's a live show after.

• 1:00:01Speaker 03

The live show. We're gonna have.

• 1:00:02Nilay Patel?

  Chris and Ross.

• 1:00:02Speaker 03

Hands-ons of whatever Apple shows. Um, and you will wanna be tuned into The Verge on Monday because it's going to be great.

• 1:00:09Speaker 02

We, we are gonna blow it out.

• 1:00:10Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:00:12Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:12Speaker 03

Well, just wanted to make sure.

• 1:00:14Nilay Patel?

  Iverge Full Effect.

• 1:00:14Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

  Verge, Iverge Full Effect.

• 1:00:17Nilay Patel?

  We need a Google name.

• 1:00:18Speaker 03

  Google Verge.

• 1:00:19Nilay Patel?

Where only have like Google events and we blow out the Google side.

• 1:00:21Speaker 03

  And Verge.

• 1:00:22Nilay Patel?

  Verge Droid? Verge Droid's good.

• 1:00:25Speaker 02

  Uh, and, and Verge?

• 1:00:26Nilay Patel?

Anyway, so iTunes people, if you would like to be on, uh, the top of the show, leave five star review on iTunes. Tell us what the Android version of The Verge should be called.

• 1:00:37Speaker 03

  And make Neelai laugh.

• 1:00:38Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:39Speaker 03

As your goal. Because if you make Neelai laugh, he will probably talk about you.

• 1:00:43Nilay Patel?

That's right. That's almost certainly true.

• 1:00:45Speaker 03

This person made me laugh. Anyway.

• 1:00:47Nilay Patel?

Someone just tweeted me the Peloton Steel will retail for $2.99, which is bonkers.

• 1:00:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:51Nilay Patel?

Wow. Kickstarter's are getting it for $2.49.

• 1:00:53Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:00:54Nilay Patel?

So against the, against the, uh, the Apple Watch, like, what are you doing? Like, that, that sounds crazy to me.

• 1:00:59Speaker 03

And then there's like all these other ones that are coming out too.

• 1:01:01Nilay Patel?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:02Speaker 03

  Huawei's and the Withings and.

• 1:01:31Speaker 01

Would this be, uh, well, I'm not going to.

• 1:01:34Speaker 02

• 1:03:03Nilay Patel?

And now you're just on your high horse and you don't care about the people. You just care about getting what you want.

• 1:03:12Speaker 06

I'd say probably my all time, like, true heart of hearts ship is, uh, Agent Dale Cooper and Audrey Horne on Twin Peaks.

• 1:03:20Speaker 07

I'm sitting there with this watch on my wrist and the staff at this particular Applebee's were not too impressed.
