  This is a HeadGum Podcast.

• 0:18Mae Martin?

Welcome to the Handsome Pod. This is a very pretty, very little episode and I'm one of your hosts, Mae Martin, joined by?

• 0:26Tig Notaro?

Tig No Tarot. How are you, May?

• 0:29Mae Martin?

I'm well, thank you. How are you?

• 0:31Tig Notaro?

I'm good. I'm curious. Yeah, I was just thinking, like, you've been on your bus for a while.

• 0:37Mae Martin?

  Hmm.

• 0:38Tig Notaro?

And maybe it's driving you a little cuckoo.

• 0:41Mae Martin?

Yeah, a little cuckly doocly. Things are getting weird, yeah.

• 0:45Tig Notaro?

So what do you do to fill your day? Like, today, what is on the docket for May Martin today on a bus tour?

• 0:53Mae Martin?

Thanks for asking, Tig. Well, today, I didn't plan anything. I'm just, I'll probably go for a walk and then, like, I slept from maybe 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 and then I wake up, I have a coffee, now I'm podcasting, go for a walk, go to the venue. But yesterday, I was in Concord, New Hampshire, and I found an arcade and me and Matt, who's touring with me, went to the arcade and we were the only people in the entire arcade. And then we did laser tag and we were the only people in the whole laser tag arena. So it was just me and my friend hunting each other through this maze.

• 1:30Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 1:31Mae Martin?

And I won every round. It brought out a dark part of me. I was hiding and sniping him. It was so fun.

• 1:38Tig Notaro?

And are you, like, did you go in feeling competitive?

• 1:41Mae Martin?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:42Tig Notaro?

Like, I'm gonna, yeah, okay. So you are competitive.

• 1:45Mae Martin?

I'm like, I've only played one game with Stephanie Allen once and I thought, wow. It was a game of foosball and she was so competitive and I'm like, I'm the exact same. So I was like, yeah, kindred competitiveness there.

• 2:01Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 2:02Mae Martin?

Yeah. I mean, Matt went in thinking we were gonna have a friendly game of laser tag. I was crawling along the ground sweating.

• 2:12Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 2:13Mae Martin?

  Yeah, it was crazy.

• 2:15Tig Notaro?

And do you play laser tag typically? Like, is that one of your... no?

• 2:19Mae Martin?

  But I will be now.

• 2:20Tig Notaro?

  Was that your first time?

• 2:22Mae Martin?

No, I played as a kid a lot, like birthday parties and stuff.

• 2:25Tig Notaro?

  Surprisingly, I haven't played.

• 2:28Mae Martin?

  I think you'd like it.

• 2:31Tig Notaro?

  Really?

• 2:31Mae Martin?

Well, I don't think that you'd hide and crawl along the ground, but I think you'd find it really funny watching everyone else do that.

• 2:40Tig Notaro?

Well, maybe I'll look into it, but the truth is, I probably won't.

• 2:45Mae Martin?

Hey, I thought of you the other day because I was, um, this is like three shows ago now. I was feeling really mad about the world and I wanted to play like a protest song because I do songs at the end of the show. And then I couldn't think of any protest songs that... and then I ended up playing Martha Wainwright, Bloody Motherfucking Asshole. I learned it before the show and then I played it and I was so nervous because I was like, is this corny? Like, but I'm just mad at the world. And then it was so cathartic to sing and I like...

• 3:16Tig Notaro?

  I bet.

• 3:17Mae Martin?

I really went for it and the audience knew it and they were... but now I've been doing it every night and I love it.

• 3:24Tig Notaro?

Oh, that's amazing. I would love to hear that.

• 3:27Mae Martin?

I would love you to hear it.

• 3:29Tig Notaro?

You've always been a fan of hers and love that song and then people just, they happen to know that song too?

• 3:37Mae Martin?

I think there's a crossover in our audiences or something, but yeah, a lot of... I mean, yeah, it's just such a great angry anthem.

• 3:46Tig Notaro?

  It's so good.

• 3:48Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 3:48Tig Notaro?

  It's so good.

• 3:50Mae Martin?

  So good.

• 3:51Tig Notaro?

She's so great. I mean, I know we've gushed about her before, but it's just...

• 3:57Mae Martin?

So great. I mean, the chorus is like, "I will not pretend, I will not put on a smile, I will not say I'm all right for you."

• 4:04Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 4:04Mae Martin?

And it's really good. And yeah, so it's cathartic. If anyone, like, put it on your house and just sing along.

• 4:12Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 4:12Mae Martin?

But I'm gonna keep singing it.

• 4:14Tig Notaro?

How many songs do you do at the end of your show?

• 4:17Mae Martin?

If I'm doing a double show day, then I'll do three. But if I'm, I'm really enjoying it, the song, the music part, probably more than anything. And sometimes I do five. I'll do like one of mine and maybe an Elliott Smith song and maybe Martha Wayne Rider.

• 4:35Tig Notaro?

And how long is your stand-up set?

• 4:38Mae Martin?

So I do about 50 minutes, then an intermission, then improv with Matt, and then music.

• 4:44Tig Notaro?

  You do an intermission?

• 4:45Mae Martin?

I didn't ask for this. I didn't ask for this live. I didn't, um, yeah, but I do do...

• 4:51Tig Notaro?

Who's telling you to do an intermission?

• 4:53Mae Martin?

I don't know, the venues, I guess, to sell drinks.

• 4:57Tig Notaro?

Wow, I have not run into that, except in Europe.

• 5:00Mae Martin?

I think the way you tour is the way I will be touring, which is like, no intermission, no meet and greets, I think.

• 5:09Mae Martin?

Not that, I'm not loving the meet, I am loving the meet and greets, but it is like the thing that's pushing me over the edge, I think, into madness.

• 5:17Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 5:18Mae Martin?

Cause it's like a whole other act of the show, you know? It's another 45 minutes and I love meeting everyone, but it's like, yeah, it's tiring.

• 5:26Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 5:27Mae Martin?

Not to, anyway, I'm very grateful and humble and lucky.

• 5:30Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's, I, I know, I, I cut out quick and just have to go get my beauty rest.

• 5:39Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 5:39Tig Notaro?

Because I feel like I gave them everything I got, you know, on stage.

• 5:45Mae Martin?

Be able to just shut your personality off a bit and like, yeah.

• 5:50Tig Notaro?

Should we get to a question?

• 5:51Mae Martin?

  Yeah, let's.

• 5:52Speaker 00

Hi, handsome pod, my name is DeShawn. I'm from Wisconsin and I don't really have a question or an advice request for you, but I have something.

• 6:03Speaker 00

I I wanna propose like I wanna see if this means anything so um okay so here it is. I have a twenty minute commute to work. Um I basically drive south on this highway. And there's a lot of fields and wooded areas that I'm passing by. Well, today's Thursday and Monday morning I'm driving to work and I look up and I see this humongous bald eagle. Flying over me, basically flying from east to west um over the highway and I'm like, that's crazy. When do you ever see that happen? Like, that's super, super cool. Like, I'm like, that's a great start to my week. Well, Tuesday I'm driving to work.

• 6:43Speaker 00

The same thing happens, pretty much the same spot, I'm assuming the same eagle, flying the same path, east to west, over my car. It's like a five second window that like I would be seeing this and I I it it happened to me like two days in a row. And um it it didn't happen Wednesday or or again today, but like that means something, right? Like, like what how what? Help me out, May, tell me what that means.

• 7:12Speaker 00

I love the pod. Thanks so much, guys. Bye.

• 7:15Tig Notaro?

That was perfect timing cuz you were nodding your head like, yes, let me take this. Let me take this and then she's like.

• 7:24Mae Martin?

Well, okay eagles are are very symbolic of a lot of things and that is wild that you would happen to look up in that little window. I mean, maybe that eagle lives around there, but um. Let's see, I've Googled, a powerful symbol of freedom, strength, perspective, divine connection. Signifies a need to rise above challenges and gain a higher perspective and embrace personal growth or new beginnings. I think it's a very positive sign. It says eagle flying overhead is a sign of encouragement to rise above challenges.

• 7:58Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 7:59Mae Martin?

Wow, cuz I I saw one in um Big Bear. On a romantic weekend, I saw a golden eagle flying in circles above me.

• 8:09Tig Notaro?

And uh what came of that?

• 8:13Mae Martin?

Um, well, we broke up pretty soon after, but now we're now things are looking good, so.

• 8:20Tig Notaro?

Okay, alright. So it's, um, you feel like there's a direct connection? And so the positivity, it might take a little while for it to come back and, and rear its head? And is that what you're saying?

• 8:35Mae Martin?

I think anytime sort of unusually synchronistic things happen, that's, that's, you're on the right path. That's like confirmation that things are, things are going well.

• 8:47Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 8:48Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 8:48Tig Notaro?

Love it. Well, we don't have an answer to that eagle. Um, I was gonna say eagle experience, but, um, we can only assume a lot of positive things are happening right now or in two years.

• 9:04Mae Martin?

Was the, you know, that Muppet? Was that a bald eagle? The one that was like, hmm.

• 9:11Tig Notaro?

  That's the only thing?

• 9:12Mae Martin?

That's all I know, you know, the big, um, hmm, yeah. Hmm. Was that Sam Eagle? Yeah.

• 9:18Tig Notaro?

So that is? I don't even know who Sam Eagle is. And you going hmm.

• 9:23Mae Martin?

  That doesn't help?

• 9:24Tig Notaro?

  No.

• 9:25Mae Martin?

He was a Muppet. He was always very into bureaucracy and things.

• 9:31Tig Notaro?

  Oh, okay, yes. Hmm.

• 9:34Mae Martin?

Didn't I kind of do a pretty good impersonation of him?

• 9:36Tig Notaro?

Yeah, yeah. The eyebrows are similar.

• 9:39Mae Martin?

  Hmm, yeah.

• 9:41Tig Notaro?

So you knew that right away, Thomas? Sam Eagle?

• 9:44Speaker 03

No, I Googled eagle and the Muppets.

• 9:47Tig Notaro?

  Oh, okay. It's like, wow.

• 9:55Tig Notaro?

Alright, so, um, what's next? What else we got?

• 9:58Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 10:00Speaker 04

Hi, ansomes. This is Janice from, um, Toronto. My question is, um, where do you see yourself in 10 years? Or where, where do you hope to be in 10 years? What do you envision your life looking like?

• 10:19Tig Notaro?

  Hmm, 10 years. Janice?

• 10:24Mae Martin?

Oh, my God. Max and Finn are gonna be full teens.

• 10:28Tig Notaro?

  Oh, yeah.

• 10:29Mae Martin?

Like ending their, heading into their twenties.

• 10:32Tig Notaro?

  They'll be almost 20, yeah.

• 10:35Mae Martin?

  That's crazy.

• 10:36Tig Notaro?

I like that you're struggling with that.

• 10:39Mae Martin?

  I know.

• 10:41Tig Notaro?

But yeah, I think it's funny because they are almost 10. I always think like, God, if I, if I didn't, because everything, not everything I do is around them, but they're the high priority of like where they want to be, what they want to be doing, and how will they, you know, thrive in the best ways. And, um, but I think I would probably not have exactly the life I have right now if I didn't have kids. And so my, I think I would, because-

• 11:20Mae Martin?

And you like the life you have now, so, and that's-

• 11:22Tig Notaro?

I, I do. I just, I just think I might be a little more, maybe not in Los Angeles.

• 11:31Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 11:31Tig Notaro?

  You know?

• 11:32Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 11:33Tig Notaro?

I think that would be a very different thing for me. And what I'm trying to do with my time home is, like I've said before, play tennis. But I'm also just curious to try things that I'm barely interested in. Like, I, I used to be so-

• 11:51Mae Martin?

Say the word. Let me get you to an escape room.

• 11:54Tig Notaro?

No, no, no, no, it's nothing like that. It's more of like, um, because when Stephanie and I first got together, she got me an easel. Because I had said like, oh, maybe I'd want to paint or learn how to paint. Because I was very into art when I was a kid, like most kids are. But that's one of those things where it's like, oh, what if I went and took an art class?

• 12:14Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 12:15Tig Notaro?

Or, you know, those kind of, those, I guess it's just retirement life that I'm describing. But, um, yeah, I think, I, I think I just picture myself not in Los Angeles, going on hikes and, um, playing tennis. And I think that's what I, I dream about.

• 12:36Mae Martin?

I'd love to see you in an art class and painting and-

• 12:41Tig Notaro?

Just don't look at the art that I'm painting.

• 12:43Mae Martin?

Do, I, I do YouTube videos sometimes, like the equivalent of like Bob Ross, where you're just painting along and it's really soothing. And you can chat to people while you do it and-

• 12:53Tig Notaro?

  God, I don't know if I really realized, you're left-handed?

• 12:56Mae Martin?

  Me? No.

• 12:57Tig Notaro?

  Yeah. No?

• 12:58Mae Martin?

I just did that with my left hand. Yeah.

• 13:01Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, yeah. Okay.

• 13:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah, 10 years.

• 13:06Mae Martin?

I mean, I'm, I feel similarly, even though I, I, yeah, I feel similarly. I'm like, I wanna maybe not be in LA, maybe be in the woods and doing a lot of painting and

• 13:19Tig Notaro?

  Tennis too?

• 13:21Mae Martin?

  I've never been into tennis.

• 13:22Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 13:23Mae Martin?

Swimming in rivers and stuff and having maybe dogs as well. And, you know, hanging out with my girls, taking fortunes.

• 13:34Tig Notaro?

Oh my God, if this podcast is going 10 more years.

• 13:41Mae Martin?

  I mean, it could be.

• 13:43Tig Notaro?

I mean, that is hilarious. I guess podcasts last a long time, but um, I feel like

• 13:48Mae Martin?

The longest podcast going, I wonder?

• 13:51Tig Notaro?

Well, Jimmy Pardo has um, a podcast called Never Not Funny that just turned 20 years old.

• 13:57Mae Martin?

Oh my God. Okay, that's something to aspire to.

• 14:01Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I mean, it's still going and uh, I mean, he was one of the early, early podcasters.

• 14:08Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 14:09Tig Notaro?

Is there a long running, what is the longest running?

• 14:12Speaker 03

It says The Jack and Stench Show, but I have not heard of that.

• 14:17Mae Martin?

  The Jack and Stench Show?

• 14:20Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 14:21Mae Martin?

  Should we hear Janice's answer?

• 14:23Tig Notaro?

Yeah, let's hear it. Give it to us, Janice.

• 14:26Speaker 04

Hopefully I would be retiring um, with extra time to be at home and spend time with my kids, my kiddies, um, spend time out in the garden and um, doing more painting. That's where I hope to be, um, but you never know with life what will happen, but that's my vision. Thanks, bye.

• 14:59Tig Notaro?

Well, it sounds like Janice and I would be good friends.

• 15:03Mae Martin?

Yeah, and yeah, all of us, yeah.

• 15:06Tig Notaro?

Isn't that funny? It's like as soon as you want to kind of wind down a little bit, you're like, where are my paintbrushes?

• 15:12Mae Martin?

Oh, yes, that's so funny. Yeah, give me my watercolors.

• 15:15Tig Notaro?

Yeah. And I also don't want to offend actual artists out there. I don't think it's easy and that I can just pick up

• 15:25Tig Notaro?

paintbrushes and be as great as, well, as great as Mae Martin.

• 15:30Mae Martin?

  No.

• 15:31Tig Notaro?

Your paintings are really great, May.

• 15:34Mae Martin?

  They're not, but thanks.

• 15:36Tig Notaro?

What do you mean they're not?

• 15:37Mae Martin?

Well, I'm like, I don't, I'm like doing it from YouTube videos a lot of the time or just figuring it out, but I feel like I haven't found my style yet.

• 15:47Tig Notaro?

  Well, I'm impressed.

• 15:48Mae Martin?

Thanks, thanks. I feel like, you know, in the beginning of doing comedy, I was doing musical comedy and like weird and just trying to find my, so I'm like, I'm in the musical comedy phase of art, you know?

• 16:00Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 16:02Mae Martin?

  Can we hear one more?

• 16:03Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, we'll do one more.

• 16:04Speaker 05

Hey, handsome, this is Jules, a fellow pretty little lady from London, England. And I was wondering, has a stranger ever given you a nickname that has gone on to stick with you in your everyday life?

• 16:17Mae Martin?

  A stranger?

• 16:18Tig Notaro?

  Yeah. A stranger. No.

• 16:23Mae Martin?

When I went to rehab, I, early on, everyone started calling me Bathwater. And I didn't know-

• 16:30Tig Notaro?

Oh, yeah, I remember you saying that.

• 16:32Mae Martin?

Yeah, and I didn't know why, and I just went with it because I was happy to be part of a group, you know? And then finally, I got close enough with them. Even the teachers were calling me Bathwater. And I said, why do you call me that? And they said, because you look like the type of kid who would have drunk their own bathwater.

• 16:50Mae Martin?

  So insulting and inaccurate.

• 16:53Tig Notaro?

  And true.

• 16:54Mae Martin?

Yeah, of course. I've had a sip.

• 16:58Tig Notaro?

  If not a few.

• 17:00Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 17:01Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I don't think I, there's nothing I can think of that. I mean, I'm sure people probably called me things behind my back that I didn't know about.

• 17:11Mae Martin?

Well, I'll never get over strangers coming up to me and saying, say hi to dumpster tits. It's so funny.

• 17:19Mae Martin?

I go, "Thank you. Yeah, I will. Yeah."

• 17:22Tig Notaro?

Absolutely. Absolutely. I wish I, I wish I could think of something. I'm sorry, Jules.

• 17:30Mae Martin?

Oh, let's hear Jules' answer, though. It seemed like...

• 17:32Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, Jules must have one.

• 17:34Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 17:34Tig Notaro?

Oh, tell me it's dumpster tits.

• 17:39Speaker 05

For me, when I was traveling in Australia with my partner, we stopped overnight at a campground with a bed that had to be put up on top of the camper van. And I was making a video diary, so I was stood back a bit, taking my video. And then, out of nowhere, this little old guy just pops his head around a tree and just goes, "Ah, little fella doesn't know what he's doing, does he?" And we just started laughing. And we were like, "Um, I didn't want to get misgendered, so I just stayed in the background, carried on filming." And so my partner explained, and he said, "Ah, the little fella's the official photographer, is he? What does the, uh, what does the little fella normally do?" And ever since then, that has been my name, even with some of my friends' kids. Little fella. So, yeah, just wondering, do you have any of your own?

• 18:26Tig Notaro?

  Little fella.

• 18:27Mae Martin?

  Little fella?

• 18:28Tig Notaro?

  That's a good name.

• 18:29Mae Martin?

Yeah, I mean, I can relate to the being mistaken, not just for a boy, but for a little boy. Like, for, yeah, yeah. Like, I think I've said this, that in Australia, my friend and I were on a farm, and the Australian woman said, "Oh, it's you two. I, I heard there were a couple of sus young boys trying to break into the..." And my friend was in his 40s, and I was, yeah. Anyway.

• 18:57Tig Notaro?

You were not a young boy.

• 19:00Mae Martin?

I was not a sus young boy.

• 19:02Tig Notaro?

Yes, yes. All right. Well, uh, we did it again.

• 19:07Mae Martin?

  We did it again.

• 19:08Tig Notaro?

What a joy. And, um, please, um, check out all of our tour dates online. Is there anything you'd like to add? Fortune, or...

• 19:20Mae Martin?

  Oh, my God.

• 19:23Tig Notaro?

I'm sorry. Fortune's on the mind.

• 19:25Mae Martin?

Yeah. It was like, you said the wrong name in bad holy.

• 19:30Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, sorry about that.

• 19:32Mae Martin?

  It's okay.

• 19:33Tig Notaro?

  It's a compliment. It's a compliment.

• 19:35Mae Martin?

Yeah, it is. Yeah. No, just check out the maymartin.net for tour dates, and also submit your questions and advice requests for us to answer to speakpipe.com/hansampod.

  What a podcast!

• 20:16Mae Martin?

  That was a HeadGum Podcast.
