• 1:49Mae Martin?

Welcome to the Handsome Podcast. I'm one of your hosts, Mae Martin, joined by? Fortune Feimster. And Tig Notaro.

• 1:58Tig Notaro?

Oh, yeah, we're back together, you guys.

• 2:01Fortune Feimster?

  Yes.

• 2:03Tig Notaro?

What should we talk about? Let's get into it.

• 2:06Fortune Feimster?

Oh, let's dig deep, you guys.

• 2:09Mae Martin?

Let's dig deep for once. Enough small talk. How are you?

• 2:14Fortune Feimster?

I'm good. I've just been busy.

• 2:16Tig Notaro?

  How's Ginger?

• 2:17Fortune Feimster?

Ginger's good. She is trucking along, still doing chemo and immunotherapy. Um, she had a blood transfusion recently because her red blood cells were pretty low. Um, and no new news as of right now. Um, she is on this one shot. That's new, that just as gnarly as all get out. So. That one only comes once every like three weeks, but when it does, it's like you can't leave your house for like four days. It's so.

• 2:47Tig Notaro?

  Oh, God.

• 2:47Fortune Feimster?

The side effects are so bad. So that one she dreads.

• 2:51Mae Martin?

It's crazy how like blood transfusions, it's, it's anytime I've known someone who's having that, there's like such a burst of energy after you have a blood transfusion. Yeah.

• 3:03Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, hers were so low and I, I called her when she was having it because she was supposed to have chemo that day. But the, it was too low to do chemo. So they gave her the transfusion and she was just like, I'm good. It's fine. I was like, goodness. And then the next day she was like, yeah, it's great. Everything's good. So.

• 3:23Tig Notaro?

And is she still, is she still, um, crawling out of a pile of well wish, well wisher cards and?

• 3:32Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, for sure. I mean, it died down, but she still gets a couple every day.

• 3:37Tig Notaro?

And does she read them all?

• 3:38Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, yeah.

• 3:39Tig Notaro?

And does she respond to all?

• 3:41Fortune Feimster?

She wants to respond to all of them. It kills her not to be able to, but it's just, would be so difficult.

• 3:48Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, of course.

• 3:49Fortune Feimster?

And she'll save a pile, um, that like stood out or had some kind of connection to me or something. And when I go home, I'll read those and it's very sweet what people are doing.

• 4:01Tig Notaro?

That's nice. And your brother or brothers are still going out and?

• 4:06Fortune Feimster?

Yep. They, they'll check on her. I'm, it's, I was, I got to see her a ton this summer, which was great, but my schedule is so nuts for the next three months. I, I don't know. I really don't know if I'll see her maybe for at least a month and a half.

• 4:22Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 4:22Mae Martin?

That's tough. Does she FaceTime or do you phone call?

• 4:25Fortune Feimster?

She does not FaceTime. She does not know how, but I should have taught her.

• 4:30Tig Notaro?

She doesn't know how to push the button?

• 4:32Fortune Feimster?

  No, she doesn't.

• 4:34Mae Martin?

Maybe your brothers can help her.

• 4:35Fortune Feimster?

  Maybe.

• 4:36Tig Notaro?

Look, if my stepfather could do it.

• 4:39Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 4:40Tig Notaro?

  Anybody on the planet.

• 4:43Fortune Feimster?

Well, I just gave her my previous iPhone, so maybe she'll be able to tinker with it and.

• 4:51Tig Notaro?

Did she not have an iPhone before?

• 4:53Fortune Feimster?

She did. It was just an older one.

• 4:55Tig Notaro?

  Hmm, okay.

• 4:56Fortune Feimster?

So now she has no excuse.

• 4:58Tig Notaro?

Yeah. I mean, my stepfather, when he would go to bed at night, he would unplug his phone, his computer, his printer.

• 5:08Mae Martin?

Unplug the printer just in case.

• 5:09Tig Notaro?

  Unplugged everything.

• 5:11Mae Martin?

  Wow.

• 5:11Fortune Feimster?

As a safety thing or a saving money thing?

• 5:14Tig Notaro?

How do you save money unplugging your phone?

• 5:17Fortune Feimster?

Well, then they use some electricity so that's going towards the electric bill.

• 5:22Tig Notaro?

Sure. I mean, how much, what are you gonna do with that?

• 5:26Fortune Feimster?

I know, but some people do think of that, those microcharges.

• 5:30Tig Notaro?

Sure. That wasn't what's going on. It was his lack of, uh, understanding of electronics.

• 5:37Fortune Feimster?

  I see.

• 5:38Tig Notaro?

And he, you know, I'd go visit him and he'd be like, all right, Tig, well, when you go to bed, please unplug the computer.

• 5:45Mae Martin?

I love that. Okay. Like he thinks that would stop the emails coming in.

• 5:50Tig Notaro?

  He did.

• 5:51Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 5:51Tig Notaro?

That's what he, that's what he thought. Um, he, it was insane. And then I remember the first time I had a laptop and brought it home, he came down, it was with dial-up and he came downstairs and he said, oh, is that why I can't use the phone? Because you have your machine plugged in.

• 6:13Tig Notaro?

Just like, that's correct. So my point is, he used to set up FaceTime dates with Max and Finn.

• 6:20Fortune Feimster?

  Mm-hmm.

• 6:20Tig Notaro?

And so I have all the faith in the world that Ginger will be able to push the circle.

• 6:25Fortune Feimster?

I think you're right. She'll, she'll figure it out. Although, sometimes it's her, her not learning something is out of stubbornness.

• 6:33Tig Notaro?

  Yes, out of spite. Inability.

• 6:37Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. Like, when I was in high school, she refused to learn how to set her alarm clock because she knew I would, I would do it for her.

• 6:47Mae Martin?

Whoa, interesting. You were setting the alarm for her every day?

• 6:51Fortune Feimster?

Uh-huh. For her, I would have to go in and set her alarm clock for her. And I'd be, "Mom, just let me show you," and she, like, would not. "No, I don't wanna, I don't wanna, I don't need to know it." And then when I went to college, guess who learned how to set her alarm clock?

• 7:06Tig Notaro?

Wait, wait, give us a couple of...

• 7:10Fortune Feimster?

  Two guesses.

• 7:10Tig Notaro?

  Was it Taylor Dane?

• 7:12Fortune Feimster?

  No, not Taylor Dane, though.

• 7:14Tig Notaro?

  Then I don't know.

• 7:14Mae Martin?

  Taylor Swift?

• 7:16Fortune Feimster?

  Not Taylor Swift.

• 7:17Tig Notaro?

  Taylor Tomlinson.

• 7:19Fortune Feimster?

  Close.

• 7:20Mae Martin?

  Taylor Ortega.

• 7:22Tig Notaro?

  Is that, is that person?

• 7:22Tig Notaro?

Is it Ginger? Was it your mother?

• 7:24Fortune Feimster?

It was, it was. That took you five guesses.

• 7:28Tig Notaro?

And so what if you had refused to set the alarm?

• 7:31Fortune Feimster?

  I don't know. I clearly didn't understand boundaries then.

• 7:36Tig Notaro?

  Mm-hmm.

• 7:37Mae Martin?

I think part of the reason I'm not getting my driver's license is because I want to get rides around. I like to be in the passenger seat.

• 7:43Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. See, when you don't, when you don't have to do something, sometimes people are just like, "Why would I do that if I don't have to?"

• 7:49Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 7:50Tig Notaro?

  Interesting.

• 7:50Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 7:50Fortune Feimster?

If Uber didn't exist, you might already have your license.

• 7:54Mae Martin?

Maybe, or I'd just, I'd be dating someone who drives.

• 7:58Tig Notaro?

Do you ever take any of those Waymo cars where there's no driver?

• 8:02Mae Martin?

Oh, it's too scary. It makes me feel like the world is hurtling onward and I'm, I'm out of touch because I'm like, that's petrifying to be in a dri... Have you done it?

• 8:12Tig Notaro?

I haven't. I've, I strike myself as somebody who would be opposed to it.

• 8:18Mae Martin?

"I strike myself" is one of my favorite things you've said, I think.

• 8:22Tig Notaro?

Well, then you might enjoy what I say to a bartender, which is, "I'll have what I'm having."

• 8:28Mae Martin?

Oh, God, that's good. Oh, God, that's good.

• 8:32Mae Martin?

I'll credit you when I steal that.

• 8:33Tig Notaro?

Thank you. Yeah, I would have thought that that would have made me highly uncomfortable and not trusting. But I don't have a problem with it. I just assume that it's probably alright. You know, it's not like you're seeing, you know, did I say they're the self-driving, there's like, it's ghost driver. There's not a human being driving you around.

• 8:53Fortune Feimster?

  It's like a robot.

• 8:56Tig Notaro?

Yeah, robot car. And what happens if you jump into the passenger seat?

• 9:02Fortune Feimster?

Oh, that's a good question. Can you? Does the door unlock?

• 9:07Tig Notaro?

Well, say you're from the backseat and you're like, I'm gonna get in the driver's seat.

• 9:12Fortune Feimster?

Well, I don't think you could get in there from the backseat.

• 9:15Mae Martin?

Why? You can. It's just a regular car.

• 9:17Fortune Feimster?

Oh, really? Well, someone like me couldn't. Maybe y'all little tiny things could.

• 9:22Mae Martin?

Did you know though, this is a friend of a friend, got in one of those cars, the self-driving ones with no driver, like booked it, had a baby with her, put her, it was raining, put the baby in the car and temporarily closed the door so that the baby didn't get wet from the rain. Car starts driving.

• 9:38Tig Notaro?

  No.

• 9:38Mae Martin?

  Takes off.

• 9:39Tig Notaro?

  This isn't a true story.

• 9:41Mae Martin?

  This is a true story.

• 9:42Tig Notaro?

This is not a true story.

• 9:44Mae Martin?

It is. And then, so she's on the app freaking out and trying to get the car to come back and all she could do is cancel the trip. But the car was already like six blocks away and she's just sprinting to the car and luckily the baby was fine. But like, you can't deprogram it. Once it's going, it's gone.

• 10:00Tig Notaro?

This is a friend of a friend. You know for a fact, this is not like some story that you heard. Yeah.

• 10:08Mae Martin?

Well, it's a, no, it was a friend of a friend, but it was a friend of a friend, but now that I'm trying, I can't remember which friend it was. And that's making me doubt myself, but I strike myself as someone that tells true stories.

• 10:20Tig Notaro?

  I'll have what I'm having.

• 10:24Tig Notaro?

That would be terrifying, but I have to say it excites as a parent. It excites me to think of Max and that we would be going in that direction of robot drivers. And that Max and Finn would be in a robot car rather than, you know.

• 10:44Mae Martin?

Really? That doesn't make you sort of nostalgic and wistful for like that they're they're going to grow up in a world that's so different to how we grew up?

• 10:52Tig Notaro?

Everybody grows up in a world that's so different than the previous generation. And to me, like, for some reason, it feels and seems safer.

• 11:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 11:02Tig Notaro?

So, oh, Thomas said you can sit in the passenger seat. I just sent a note.

• 11:07Mae Martin?

That's true, though, that every, like, every generation is so different to the last. And, and I was on the news a bunch recently promoting my show and I kept saying, I met this newscaster and she was like, I think newscasters, that's like a calling, like you, like she was newscaster to her bones. She was so together, authoritative.

• 11:27Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 11:27Mae Martin?

  Firm, kind, professional.

• 11:29Tig Notaro?

  Attractive?

• 11:30Mae Martin?

Very attractive. And I go, gotta be attractive. And I said, well, what a crazy time to be on the news. You know, the world is on fire. And she was like, she said that she interviewed someone who was like a civil rights activist in the 60s or something. And they were like, no, it's always been like, it was apocalyptic then. There was Vietnam. There was.

• 11:52Tig Notaro?

It's just we have social media and fast news heading our way.

• 11:57Mae Martin?

Yeah. Well, it does feel particularly bad right now, but it was reassuring that she was like, everyone has always felt that way. But.

• 12:03Tig Notaro?

I have to have moments where I check in when I'm overwhelmed and I have to go, aside from issues around the world, because when everything's going on around the world, it can feel like you're in imminent danger as well.

• 12:21Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 12:22Tig Notaro?

And you, you can be for sure, but like in actual, your immediate surroundings right now, am I in imminent danger?

• 12:32Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 12:32Tig Notaro?

And that's helpful for me sometimes when I get overwhelmed by news, because of course, we're all.

• 12:43Tig Notaro?

Potentially in danger, but just that immediate, immediate, check your surroundings. Am I in imminent danger? And when I can say no, I can take a little bit of a breather. And, and again, that's not to say that I feel disconnected from the world or because other people are in imminent danger, that it doesn't matter to me.

• 13:08Mae Martin?

No, but also if you're paralyzed by fear, then you can't even help other people or sort of function like if you're, yeah.

• 13:14Tig Notaro?

But it's a helpful reminder for me.

• 13:18Mae Martin?

Yeah, I'm just like, at what point are, are we like, oh, maybe as a species, we're, we're not good because it keeps, it seems like everything that happens in the news. I'm like, ah, that's, you know, but if we were all healthy, like we're good hearted and human nature is ultimately kind, but I have to believe that. But then it's sometimes like, well, maybe there is also this thread of cruelty that we can't seem to shake. I don't know. Anyways.

• 13:49Tig Notaro?

  Welcome to our comedy podcast.

• 13:53Mae Martin?

I'm right, I gotta write a new hour of stand up. I'm going on tour in the new year and I'm like trying to figure out what I want to say and talk about. And, um, yeah, that's a, it's a weird time to be doing stand up. Yeah.

• 14:05Tig Notaro?

And why specifically are you saying it's a weird time?

• 14:09Mae Martin?

Well, just it seems like such a conspicuous omission to be doing, to be not talking about what's, what's going on and all the suffering. But then my comedy has always been kind of about childhood and, you know, myself and stuff. So, but yeah, I think it'll come up in the show. I'm, I gotta figure out a way to.

• 14:28Fortune Feimster?

Well, it's hard to do current events in stand up because it changes by the hour.

• 14:32Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 14:33Fortune Feimster?

And, you know, suddenly you're writing bits on this one thing. And then by the time you're, you know, filming it or in another city, it's shifted or changed or on to the next thing.

• 14:44Mae Martin?

Sometimes you write a bunch of stand up about being a stepparent and then, and then it's not relevant anymore.

• 14:51Fortune Feimster?

You could still talk about how you had an experience.

• 14:55Mae Martin?

Yes, absolutely. And, and also, um, I'll be talking a lot about that possum Eric in my garden.

• 15:00Tig Notaro?

  Oh, got to.

• 15:01Fortune Feimster?

  Good.

• 15:02Mae Martin?

That, that might be the bulk of the hour.

• 15:10Mae Martin?

Are you writing new standup right now, Tig?

• 15:12Tig Notaro?

I am. I have new-ish standup that I've been kind of continuing to work on or perform.

• 15:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 15:25Tig Notaro?

And then I've had shows where I'll just take some things that I've never said and, and just go through them.

• 15:34Mae Martin?

That's the fun, the fun period.

• 15:37Tig Notaro?

Yeah. And also terrifying and horrendous bombing period. But, um, but yeah, yeah. I'm slowly but surely working on it.

• 15:48Mae Martin?

Did I tell you guys that my tour is like a bus tour? It's the first time I've ever-

• 15:52Tig Notaro?

  Oh, really?

• 15:53Mae Martin?

Done with like bunk beds and then-

• 15:55Tig Notaro?

  What?

• 15:55Mae Martin?

Little old me in this bus. How many, do you know how many cities you're doing? Thirty-five. And just, but you're just banging them all out in a row? I'm gonna do, uh, two weeks in the bus, one week off, two weeks in the bus, one week off, because I'm a fragile soul.

• 16:12Tig Notaro?

What made you do a bus tour?

• 16:14Mae Martin?

Um, financial reasons. I think, well, we worked, we did the math and also there's just something nice about not having to take all these little flights and it's after the environment, you're checking into different hotels and, uh, I kind of liked the idea of just having all my stuff on the, all my products on the bus, all my clear mascara, you know, get settled in. I'm hoping the bus driver is a nice, friendly person.

• 16:36Tig Notaro?

So you're saying it's cheaper for you to take a bus?

• 16:40Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 16:41Tig Notaro?

  Than to fly around?

• 16:42Mae Martin?

  Essentially, yeah. Yeah.

• 16:43Tig Notaro?

And I did the, I went on tour with Sarah Silverman years ago and, um, did the bus tour.

• 16:51Mae Martin?

How was that? Just the two of you on the bus?

• 16:53Tig Notaro?

Well, she, and it was also Todd Glass.

• 16:56Mae Martin?

  Oh, fun.

• 16:57Tig Notaro?

And her manager. And then also, her tour manager is the woman Jessica, who is the producer of Come See Me in the Good Light.

• 17:10Mae Martin?

  Oh.

• 17:10Tig Notaro?

And so I met Jessica on that tour with Sarah.

• 17:16Mae Martin?

  Oh.

• 17:17Tig Notaro?

And, um, and turns out she was a producer, documentary producer, and so we've just kept in touch over the years loosely. We had such a nice time.

• 17:28Mae Martin?

Was it nice on the bus? Like, because I might bring an opening act or like, yeah, have a tour manager on the bus.

• 17:34Tig Notaro?

I mean, it was nice in that, you know, I was with fun people and friends and like, I slept in bed with Sarah, like in the big bed in the back. And, you know, I wasn't like in a bunk bed or anything. I slept with her.

• 17:46Mae Martin?

And you didn't feel claustrophobic? Like, it was good to just get offstage and then go?

• 17:52Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I don't really have huge memories of it, other than like, um, you know, I think it must have been a good enough time. I don't have a single bad memory. So, um, that's what I'm going on. Um, and, uh, and then it was also funny because I recorded my album in Bloomington, Indiana, and Sarah's big tour bus pulled up to, uh, I've recorded my album in a recording studio.

• 18:17Mae Martin?

  Oh, wow. Oh, what?

• 18:19Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 18:19Mae Martin?

  But with an audience?

• 18:21Tig Notaro?

With an audience. They all came and sat on the floor. It was a tiny audience because my record label, secretly Canadian, they're an indie rock label, and I'm their one comedian. And so they were like, when you come through Bloomington, which is where they're located, they have, um, Bon Iver and, um, all sorts of cool artists and stuff. But anyway, they were like, um, come by the studio and, um, we'll fill it up with some friends and locals and they'll all just be sitting on the floor in the recording studio and, and we'll get really great sound quality. And, uh, and so Sarah introduces me on that album and it's because... We were on tour on the bus.

• 19:06Mae Martin?

That's a cool Beatles-y vibe, people sitting on the floor of a studio and like, yeah. Have you done a bus tour of Fortune?

• 19:13Fortune Feimster?

  No, I don't think I ever will.

• 19:17Mae Martin?

  Coming in strong.

• 19:18Fortune Feimster?

  I mean, I, cause I think because I, I, I am such a homebody, I don't like being gone more than like 10 days.

• 19:27Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 19:27Fortune Feimster?

Um, without having some kind of like base.

• 19:32Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 19:32Fortune Feimster?

Home base. So I don't know. I, I kinda like doing the like, go out for three or four days, come back.

• 19:38Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 19:39Fortune Feimster?

And I don't mind stretching that over a year and a half.

• 19:42Mae Martin?

  Mm hmm.

• 19:43Fortune Feimster?

Um, but every, I mean, and, and every tour I do is 150 shows in a hundred cities.

• 19:48Mae Martin?

You can't be on a bus for a year.

• 19:50Fortune Feimster?

  A lot of bus.

• 19:51Mae Martin?

Yeah. So. Oh my God, if I got on the bus and I got buckled it, you don't buckle, I guess, but I got in and then the bus driver turned around and it was Thomas. I was trying to think of someone, it would be funny if it was them. I'd be so happy if it was Thomas.

• 20:07Fortune Feimster?

  Buckle up, little cowboy.

• 20:10Tig Notaro?

Hey, wait, is that your Thomas impression?

• 20:13Fortune Feimster?

  I guess it was.

• 20:15Tig Notaro?

  That was terrible.

• 20:16Fortune Feimster?

  I didn't mean, I didn't really mean.

• 20:18Tig Notaro?

  Was that Australian?

• 20:20Fortune Feimster?

  Buckle up, little cowboy.

• 20:23Mae Martin?

My Thomas impression might sound a bit like my Ira Glass.

• 20:26Fortune Feimster?

  Let's hear it.

• 20:27Mae Martin?

Be like, hey babe, we're going on tour. I don't know why I made it nasal.

• 20:32Fortune Feimster?

  All right, take you try.

• 20:34Tig Notaro?

Well, I'll, I'll do the impression, Thomas doesn't know this, but Stephanie and I do an impression of Thomas.

• 20:40Mae Martin?

  No way, let's hear it.

• 20:42Tig Notaro?

But only for this one thing in our life.

• 20:45Mae Martin?

  Okay.

• 20:46Tig Notaro?

Cause Tom, when Thomas was our assistant, anytime, and this was how we ate too, was like if, if we had leftover, mainly leftovers from Max and Finn.

• 20:57Mae Martin?

  Uh huh.

• 20:57Tig Notaro?

Um, you know, Thomas, when you say, when you were at the house, we'd be like, oh, there's half of this thing. Do you want it?

• 21:03Speaker 05

Yeah, I would get offered a lot of leftovers.

• 21:05Tig Notaro?

Yes. And, um, but Thomas, like if you ask Thomas, um, you know, hey, Thomas, do you, do you want the rest of these, of the noodles? He'd go, uh, yes, please.

• 21:18Tig Notaro?

Thomas, can you hear that that is?

• 21:20Speaker 05

  Yeah, that's, that's pretty accurate.

• 21:22Tig Notaro?

Yeah, so whenever we offer each other mainly food, but it could be anywhere else, we'll say, uh, yes, please.

• 21:30Mae Martin?

  Oh, I love that.

• 21:32Tig Notaro?

So that's my Thomas impression. Uh, yes, please.

• 21:35Mae Martin?

That's funny that people in your life, like, might have impersonations of you you don't know about from some moment that you, like, I wonder, oh, my friend told me last night really calmly in front of a bunch of people who then colluded, that my walk looks like in footage of Bigfoot, when they catch Bigfoot.

• 21:54Tig Notaro?

  Oh.

• 21:54Mae Martin?

  Walking fast.

• 21:56Tig Notaro?

It does, for sure. Everyone knows it.

• 21:58Fortune Feimster?

  I've not noticed this.

• 21:59Mae Martin?

With like, straight legs, straight, kinda stiff, and just the way Bigfoot like strides across the camera.

• 22:05Tig Notaro?

  That's a good stride, though.

• 22:07Mae Martin?

Yeah, I think it's not bad.

• 22:09Fortune Feimster?

  It's walking with purpose.

• 22:10Mae Martin?

Yeah, and a little guilty looking always.

• 22:14Tig Notaro?

I've wanted to make a list of all the...

• 22:17Fortune Feimster?

Oh, sorry. And we got nothing, and we got nothing.

• 22:21Tig Notaro?

I've wanted to make a list of all the different little sayings that we have in our family, because you know how every family or group of friends, you have those little lines?

• 22:31Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 22:32Tig Notaro?

  Like the, uh, yes, please?

• 22:33Mae Martin?

Yeah. What's, what, I'm trying to think of some from, mine all come out when we're playing poker as a family. Uh, if someone hasn't put their blinds in, my mom says, "Some cunt's light." Sorry.

• 22:47Tig Notaro?

  She says what?

• 22:48Mae Martin?

It's, listen, we're a British family, so it's not as, it's not that bad.

• 22:51Tig Notaro?

But I didn't hear what you said.

• 22:53Mae Martin?

She says, "Some cunt's light." And she's been saying that since I was about 10.

• 22:59Mae Martin?

  Sorry.

• 23:00Fortune Feimster?

I didn't realize that's what you said either.

• 23:02Mae Martin?

Oh, you didn't? Okay. But I repeated it, so.

• 23:06Tig Notaro?

  Say it again?

• 23:07Mae Martin?

  Uh, I can't.

• 23:09Fortune Feimster?

Because British people love that word.

• 23:12Mae Martin?

  They love it.

• 23:13Tig Notaro?

  Do you like that word?

• 23:14Fortune Feimster?

I only say it with a British accent.

• 23:17Mae Martin?

  Yeah. Cunt.

• 23:21Mae Martin?

  We're all so sheepish.

• 23:24Mae Martin?

  Well, one time-

• 23:26Fortune Feimster?

Could you hear, could you hear my British accent?

• 23:28Tig Notaro?

Fortune's just a pretty little lady. She's so shy to say it.

• 23:34Mae Martin?

My, my mom always says that she knew she'd, she had too much road rage because I was in the backseat. I was two and she was driving and someone cut her off and she went, "You fucking..." And then I in the backseat went, "Cunt."

• 23:49Mae Martin?

  Anyway, sorry, sorry, guys.

• 23:51Fortune Feimster?

But it's not as, but in, but over there, over and across the pond, it's not, it doesn't have the clutching the pearls thing that we have with that word here.

• 24:00Mae Martin?

  It's a term of endearment.

• 24:01Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, everyone says it there.

• 24:03Mae Martin?

Yeah. Did you have any sayings in your family?

• 24:07Fortune Feimster?

  Me?

• 24:07Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 24:08Fortune Feimster?

I don't think so. Cause I, cause I grew up with two brothers and they weren't very whimsical, you know?

• 24:17Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 24:17Fortune Feimster?

So everything was very, my, oh, my mom had a thing. It's not really a saying, but it was her little phrase that whenever we went to school or, um, she would send us off by saying, "Happy day."

• 24:29Mae Martin?

  Oh, happy day is nice.

• 24:31Fortune Feimster?

So that, well, I guess that would count as one of those things. Happy day.

• 24:35Mae Martin?

  That's a good stand-up special title.

• 24:37Fortune Feimster?

  Mm-hmm.

• 24:38Mae Martin?

  Happy day.

• 24:40Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, happy day.

• 24:42Tig Notaro?

  Oh, happy day.

• 24:44Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, happy day.

• 24:46Speaker 00

  Oh, happy day.

• 24:48Fortune Feimster?

  When Jesus washed-

• 24:50Mae Martin?

  When Jesus washed-

• 24:52Fortune Feimster?

When Jesus washed- He washed sins away.

• 24:59Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my Lord.

• 25:02Fortune Feimster?

  Exactly.

• 25:03Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 25:06Mae Martin?

  Oh, my gosh, you guys.

• 25:08Tig Notaro?

We have so many sayings in my current immediate family.

• 25:14Tig Notaro?

That are, that's where it came from, where I'm like, oh, I'd love to make a list because we have so, Stephanie and I say so many little things to each other all the time. Even my ex, who is now married to this guy named Jeff, we were with them one time and my ex was talking about something and he pushed back about whatever she was saying. And she said, no, you know, I can't do that. And that would never happen. And you know that Jeff. And, um, and so to this day, anytime that there's a moment that we can sneak that

• 25:54Tig Notaro?

in, you know, it's Stephanie will be like, yeah, she'll be like, she'll be like, can you, can you get, see if that cooler will fit in the back of the car? And I'm like, Stephanie, it doesn't fit back there. And you know that Jeff.

• 26:07Mae Martin?

  Oh, that's really good.

• 26:09Tig Notaro?

Constantly, we say, and you know that Jeff.

• 26:12Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, we're like the queens of callbacks is what it is.

• 26:16Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Yes. You guys are queens of callbacks.

• 26:18Fortune Feimster?

  Constantly doing callbacks.

• 26:20Tig Notaro?

It's so, so fun. And when we were shooting One Mississippi, you know, the director Nicole Hollup Center, she, she worked a lot on One Mississippi and she, uh, we were going somewhere on location. We were in the, in the van. And I don't know who said what, but Nicole misunderstood it. And she was facing forward on the bus and she just turned around and was like, we have to go back. And, uh, and we were like, no, nobody said we had to go back because we had been driving for like an hour or whatever, someplace. And she's like, we have to go back. And so now, when, anytime something like that comes up, uh, okay, we're, you know, we're gonna miss it. So let's just go back. We have to go back.

• 27:05Mae Martin?

  I like it.

• 27:07Tig Notaro?

I love all the fun little callbacks, but you're right, Fortune. That's what it is.

• 27:12Fortune Feimster?

  I love it.

• 27:13Tig Notaro?

  I love you too.

• 27:14Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 27:15Tig Notaro?

We all just want to be loved.

• 27:19Mae Martin?

  Yeah, we do.

• 27:19Speaker 06

  Is that so wrong?

• 27:20Mae Martin?

Do you remember that John Lovett's character?

• 27:23Tig Notaro?

  No.

• 27:24Speaker 06

I just want to be loved. Is that so wrong?

• 27:30Mae Martin?

That actually leads us into our question pretty well.

• 27:33Tig Notaro?

  It sure does.

• 27:34Mae Martin?

Should we get to our question?

• 27:35Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, let's do it. Well, today's question asker is an Emmy nominated actor best known for playing Oscar on The Office. He reprises the role in the new spinoff series, The Paper. He's also appeared in shows like Lucky Hank, Mr. Iglesias, and People of Earth. Oscar Nunez is asking today's question.

• 27:58Speaker 07

Hi handsome, it's Oscar Nunez from The Office and a new show called The Paper. And I love your show. Tig, I want to say that I taught you everything you know, but I can't because it's not true, but I want to say it. Fortune, hi, hi, May. You guys, here's my question. Okay, pick your top five cast members from SNL, from all time, top five improv group you would have. And, and good luck, good luck to all of us.

• 28:31Tig Notaro?

Thank you for the, for wishing us luck, Oscar.

• 28:34Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, Oscar's so sweet.

• 28:35Mae Martin?

  So sweet, so funny.

• 28:37Fortune Feimster?

  Such a kind man.

• 28:38Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Oh, my gosh, when Max and Finn were tiny, we went over to his house and his daughter was so sweet. The way she took care of them. It just like will never, ever leave my mind. I mean, he and his wife are also wonderful, but man, his daughter. It's like, it's one of those moments where you're like, I want my kids to be like that.

• 28:59Mae Martin?

  Yeah, I love that.

• 29:00Fortune Feimster?

Sweet. I can't believe they have another Office spinoff.

• 29:04Mae Martin?

I know, apparently it's really great. It's getting amazing reviews.

• 29:07Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, yeah, that's great.

• 29:08Tig Notaro?

What do you mean another one?

• 29:09Fortune Feimster?

Well, because the, because the American one was a, from the British one, I mean, take on the British, the American version of the British version.

• 29:19Tig Notaro?

  Right, right, right.

• 29:20Fortune Feimster?

  So, yeah.

• 29:21Mae Martin?

So, SNL cast members, I feel like this, because we're, we're each from slightly different generations. I wonder if that'll be reflected in our answers and I can't wait to find out.

• 29:30Tig Notaro?

  I think it will.

• 29:31Mae Martin?

  I can't wait.

• 29:37Fortune Feimster?

I know, because I feel like everybody, you know, it's such a cultural um thing. The SNL is just like a part, you know, I don't know how it is for the young people now if they pay attention to it like we did, but I feel like when I was growing up, everyone kind of had their SNL cast, like this is who, um, you know, people watched and like, nothing was ever as good as the cast that you grew up on.

• 30:04Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 30:04Mae Martin?

Now I feel like people watch like the clips on Instagram and stuff, but it's different. Like when I was growing up, like you would sit on Saturday night and watch the whole show. But now it's people just watch like the Instagram highlights.

• 30:17Fortune Feimster?

Right. Um, I know when I, I was obsessed with it. I think I started paying attention to SN. I didn't watch the early days, like the Chevy Chase and Gilda Radner days. Those were before my time. I came on as a big fan of the show in the Adam Sandler era.

• 30:37Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 30:37Fortune Feimster?

And, uh, Chris Farley era. Um, and I was so obsessed with it. I would watch it religiously live on Saturday night. I would tape it in my VCR and then study it throughout the week.

• 30:54Mae Martin?

Study it. Little notepad and pen.

• 30:57Fortune Feimster?

And ironically, I'm, I opened for Sandler. I was just with him this past weekend.

• 31:03Mae Martin?

  How was that?

• 31:04Fortune Feimster?

So fun. He does these big huge arena shows, like 14,000 people and, you know, people dress up as all the characters he's played in movies and on SNL and they're so passionate and about him and know him from so many different things. It's the best. He's so lovely and nice and.

• 31:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 31:25Fortune Feimster?

It's such a, you know, such a, even doing the show with Will, it's like these people I grew up on and I, it's so wild to me to be like doing things with them now, but.

• 31:34Mae Martin?

It's such a relief when they're so nice too.

• 31:37Fortune Feimster?

  I know.

• 31:37Mae Martin?

And he is super nice. His stuff doesn't age because it's so silly that it's just evergreen, like his songs and things that he. Is doing these days. And yeah, I only met him one time, but he was so nice backstage at Largo. I'm Adam. Nice to meet you. I thought it was really good. Yeah, I was like, oh, I love you. Thank God.

• 31:57Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, I remember he put out a comedy album when I was in like eighth grade.

• 32:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 32:02Fortune Feimster?

And I would listen to it over and over and over again. But it was so ridiculous. So I would say my early two of my five would be Adam Sandler and Chris Farley. From those early days and I'll answer the other ones in a bit, but did y'all follow any of that cast?

• 32:24Mae Martin?

Yeah. I mean, that was a bit before my time. So they wouldn't, I don't know. Like you said, like you just get attached to your era. So my five are all. I think they're all women too. My five are like the, are like Kristen Wiig, Rachel Dratch, Maya Rudolph, Anna Gastric and Molly Shannon. Probably. Those are like gods to me.

• 32:47Fortune Feimster?

  Those are amazing.

• 32:48Mae Martin?

And Kristen Wiig was a bit after when I stopped.

• 32:51Fortune Feimster?

She came a little bit after, yeah.

• 32:53Mae Martin?

  Amen. Sherry O'Terry, yeah.

• 32:55Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, my other ones would be Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon and Kristen Wiig. So Molly, Molly and Will were at the cast, the era after Farley and Sandler. And then Kristen would be the era after Molly and Will.

• 33:15Mae Martin?

They all seemed to, that era, they all seemed to, I mean, probably not, but they all seemed to get along and have a good time as well. And they seemed like.

• 33:23Fortune Feimster?

Well, I heard, I heard that Will and Sherry O'Terry and a bunch of people in that era came from the Groundlings. So there was a lot of camaraderie there. So they like would play, do like improv warmups together and stuff. So whereas earlier days, it was kind of more a party vibe, like an edgier vibe. They sort of brought it. And then the Farley and Sandler days were kind of boys' club.

• 33:50Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 33:51Fortune Feimster?

More like kind of masculine. Will and Molly and Sherry's era was like silly and improv-y.

• 34:01Fortune Feimster?

Um goofy characters kind of thing.

• 34:04Mae Martin?

  Tig, what about you?

• 34:05Tig Notaro?

Gilda was such a massive, massive part of my childhood and I just adored her. And um, and I also loved Chevy Chase. My mother had such a crush on Chevy Chase.

• 34:19Mae Martin?

  Really?

• 34:20Tig Notaro?

  Oh my God, loved him.

• 34:22Mae Martin?

You know, you know how I think everyone's bisexual or I can't flippantly say that? Then when I meet straight women who are like Chevy Chase is my guy and I'm like, some people are straight.

• 34:34Tig Notaro?

Yeah, yeah. But he what? I mean, when he was young, like I just, I can see the, but my mother also thought, she was also in love with David Letterman.

• 34:43Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 34:44Tig Notaro?

You know, like she just, she was like, oh, he's so cute. And I think she just thought they were so funny, obviously. Not that they're unattractive people, but I just, you know.

• 34:54Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 34:55Tig Notaro?

So Gilda Radner, Chevy Chase, Martin Short, I love him so deeply.

• 35:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 35:03Tig Notaro?

Um, this is probably a little bit of a curve ball in that she's not as well-known. Laura Kietlinger.

• 35:14Mae Martin?

  Oh, interesting.

• 35:15Fortune Feimster?

  Googling.

• 35:16Tig Notaro?

Do you, you know her, Fortune?

• 35:18Mae Martin?

  Uh huh.

• 35:19Tig Notaro?

I just love how dry and dark

• 35:23Mae Martin?

  Yes, yes.

• 35:24Tig Notaro?

This woman is. She's, she was one of my favorite stand-ups. I just, I love her so, so much. She had a book called, um, Quick Shots of False Hope. And, and it's funny because the cover of the book, she's leaning to the side. And she was like, yeah, I did that to get out of the way of the half-off stickers.

• 35:48Mae Martin?

  That's funny.

• 35:49Tig Notaro?

  She's just, she's so funny.

• 35:52Tig Notaro?

And uh, I've seen so many clips. My brother was so into, um,

• 35:58Tig Notaro?

Chris Farley and, um, and, and he made his way into my whatever awareness of SNL to some degree in a way that I just, I, yeah, I just, I, I know more about him, I would say than other more recent, more beyond the first season.

• 36:23Mae Martin?

Yeah. But you guys must've been to like SNL after parties and stuff, right?

• 36:28Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 36:29Mae Martin?

You have, both of you? Fuck off, really? I've never been in a, I, I know that's like the golden era, my, like, maybe it's not as cool anymore, but I would like to go to an SNL after party.

• 36:38Fortune Feimster?

It's just a little different than what you might imagine. Like when you think of an SNL after party, you think of like, this is big grand party with all these people and just chatting with each other and drinking, but they, they pick a restaurant and that restaurant stays open for them and all the cast have their own table.

• 37:02Tig Notaro?

It's a different restaurant every week.

• 37:04Fortune Feimster?

  Different restaurant every Saturday.

• 37:06Tig Notaro?

  Huh.

• 37:06Fortune Feimster?

And they just, nothing's provided or paid for because you know, they do it every week for decades. So that would be pretty pricey.

• 37:14Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 37:15Fortune Feimster?

And everyone just goes to their own table and chats with their friends.

• 37:20Mae Martin?

Oh, wait a second. Yeah, I was picturing like.

• 37:23Fortune Feimster?

Occasionally they'll get up and mingle, but it's kind of everyone is just like at their own table. It's cool. Cause like, you're like, oh, I went, but it's a little, this is different than what you would kind of assume.

• 37:35Tig Notaro?

  For sure.

• 37:36Mae Martin?

I mean, I, in the, in the golden era, I bet it was like people doing karaoke.

• 37:41Fortune Feimster?

I mean, back in the Gilda days, they probably partied and like.

• 37:45Mae Martin?

  Yeah, I'm sure.

• 37:46Fortune Feimster?

  Did coke and shit.

• 37:47Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 37:49Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's not that vibe now. Yeah, it's just like chatting and having a cocktail, if that.

• 37:55Fortune Feimster?

And not everyone goes from the cast, they're tired.

• 38:00Mae Martin?

People are a lot more aware of self-care now.

• 38:02Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 38:03Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 38:05Fortune Feimster?

I've tested twice for the show.

• 38:07Mae Martin?

I remember you saying, yeah, did you send in a tape or you went in?

• 38:11Fortune Feimster?

My first one was a tape and then the second one, they saw me at the Groundlings. Um, and it just was like such a dream of mine. But even to like, just walk the hall and to like be on that, perform on that stage. And, cause a lot of the people that have worked there for decades, you know, you're meeting these people that, you know, did costumes and makeup for all these huge people. Yeah, they have the guys behind the camera, some of them have been there for 30 years. Um, it just, it's such an institution and, um, I just thought, man, this is like, that I just wanted it so bad because it was such a part of my childhood.

• 38:52Fortune Feimster?

And, um, I just was so obsessed with the show that you think it's like the end all be all.

• 38:58Mae Martin?

  Yep.

• 38:59Tig Notaro?

Would you still want it now if you could have it?

• 39:01Fortune Feimster?

No, I make way too much money.

• 39:05Fortune Feimster?

  They get paid nothing.

• 39:07Mae Martin?

  Is that right? Is it?

• 39:08Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 39:09Mae Martin?

  Really?

• 39:10Fortune Feimster?

  So low.

• 39:11Mae Martin?

And you sign away the rights to all your material.

• 39:13Fortune Feimster?

Huge step back now. I mean, it's obviously a coveted thing, but it's just, it would have been amazing, you know, 12 years ago.

• 39:24Mae Martin?

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:25Fortune Feimster?

  But now I would.

• 39:26Mae Martin?

And we're all hosting it together.

• 39:28Fortune Feimster?

It would be like, I would lose so much money doing that show.

• 39:32Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 39:33Fortune Feimster?

Anyway, that sounds weird to say, but I'm always saying it because they get paid so little.

• 39:41Tig Notaro?

Yeah, famously, they get paid very little.

• 39:44Fortune Feimster?

I'm not saying like, oh, I'm a, you know, gazillionaire. I'm just saying it's.

• 39:48Tig Notaro?

  I heard I'm a gazillionaire in there.

• 39:51Mae Martin?

  That's what I heard.

• 39:53Fortune Feimster?

But it would be, uh, yeah, it's such a cool thing for any, it's a young person's place, you know, it's like, that's the job you want when you're in your late twenties, early thirties.

• 40:06Tig Notaro?

Well, should we hear what, uh, Oscar has to say?

• 40:08Mae Martin?

Yeah, because was there any crossover of our answers? Uh, we, but we said Molly Shannon.

• 40:14Fortune Feimster?

We had a couple. Tink and I both said Farley. You and I both said Molly and Kristen Wiig.

• 40:19Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 40:20Fortune Feimster?

Kinda, I used to memorize, uh, Molly's, um, Mary Catherine Gallagher.

• 40:24Mae Martin?

  Oh, man, yeah.

• 40:26Fortune Feimster?

And do it at school. And my first time ever doing anything on stage was at my senior, um, the senior day, I played, uh, Mary Catherine Gallagher on stage.

• 40:38Tig Notaro?

  Nice.

• 40:39Fortune Feimster?

  Smelled my armpits and everything.

• 40:41Mae Martin?

And, and how does it smell?

• 40:43Fortune Feimster?

  That's what she does.

• 40:44Mae Martin?

  Good question.

• 40:44Fortune Feimster?

When she gets nervous, she puts her hands on her arms like this and then she smells them.

• 40:49Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 40:52Speaker 07

Well done. Those were the correct answers. Fortune Marie. Um, I just wanted to say that. Here are my five picks in no particular order. Maya Rudolph, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon, uh, Will Ferrell, and the fifth one, Handsome gets to pick, but you have to pick from these three guys. Will Forte, Fred Armisen, or Bill Hader?

• 41:13Tig Notaro?

  Ooh.

• 41:13Speaker 07

I love Handsome. Um, yeah. Bye.

• 41:18Fortune Feimster?

Those are three solid ones, too. I would say Bill Hader of the group, um, because Stefan is one of my favorite SNL characters of all time.

• 41:29Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 41:30Fortune Feimster?

Fred and, and Will Forte are so great, too.

• 41:34Mae Martin?

That's really, I'm gonna go Fred on SNL because I'm remembering lots of amazing, but yeah, Bill Hader, yeah.

• 41:41Fortune Feimster?

Well, and Fred's very music forward, so he always has one character. Like, oh, Dios mio. But then like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler at the news desk was iconic.

• 41:51Mae Martin?

Yeah, they didn't make it onto our list. That's crazy.

• 41:53Fortune Feimster?

It's hard. Well, you know, 50 years. They just celebrated their 50 years of SNL. That's, uh, hard to narrow down.

• 42:01Mae Martin?

  That is crazy. 50 years.

• 42:03Tig Notaro?

And I'm gonna go with Will Forte.

• 42:05Mae Martin?

  We got our bases covered.

• 42:06Fortune Feimster?

  Just because you love MacGruber.

• 42:08Tig Notaro?

  Me and MacGruber, man.

• 42:12Tig Notaro?

  Man, do I love MacGruber.

• 42:15Tig Notaro?

Well, thanks for the question, Oscar. Um, I, I, I ran into Oscar.

• 42:22Tig Notaro?

I think it was at the airport and he was boarding a flight and he was listening to my old podcast, Don't Ask Tig.

• 42:27Mae Martin?

  No.

• 42:28Tig Notaro?

I believe that he listens to our podcast.

• 42:31Mae Martin?

  Oh, that's so nice.

• 42:32Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 42:32Fortune Feimster?

It is a trip to see people. I have passed by people, like if I've been out walking and they're like, I know this is crazy, but I just have to show you. And they'll show me their phone and they're listening to handsome.

• 42:44Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 42:45Fortune Feimster?

And that's always such a trip.

• 42:47Mae Martin?

Or in Lake Arrowhead, there was a woman who was like, I was just listening to you talking about how you're in Lake Arrowhead and like, and then there I went walking through her small town. Yeah.

• 42:58Fortune Feimster?

That trip that you love so much that you came home a week early from?

• 43:03Mae Martin?

  I did not.

• 43:03Fortune Feimster?

Did you get your stuff home?

• 43:04Tig Notaro?

We never asked. Did you end up going back up there?

• 43:06Mae Martin?

I did not come home a week early. I came back for like one day and then I went.

• 43:11Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, you did go back?

• 43:12Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:13Fortune Feimster?

Cause we never, we never caught up with you on that.

• 43:15Tig Notaro?

  We never closed that circle.

• 43:17Mae Martin?

Let's close it now. I, I was there for like 93% of the allotted time and I had to, I would do it again.

• 43:25Fortune Feimster?

Did you invite anyone else up there for a romantic hot dog dinner?

• 43:29Mae Martin?

Wouldn't, wouldn't you like to know?

• 43:30Fortune Feimster?

  I would.

• 43:32Mae Martin?

  No, I was, um, no.

• 43:37Fortune Feimster?

We had a lot of people weighing in on that hot dog dinner.

• 43:40Mae Martin?

Oh yeah. People were outraged. Yeah.

• 43:45Tig Notaro?

Oh, the things people get outraged about.

• 43:49Mae Martin?

I mean, people were not, people like were delighted and confused by my list of things that I brought, but then a lot of other people being like, this is so wasteful. This is, this is capitalism and like, oh yeah. So I don't know.

• 44:04Tig Notaro?

Yeah. It's a, you can't take it in.

• 44:08Mae Martin?

You gotta just be aware of it and try, you know, we're all trying to be good.

• 44:12Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There's bigger stuff to get upset about.

• 44:17Mae Martin?

Do you guys, do you read reviews? Like I'm just, well, by the time this comes out, I guess some reviews will have come out of my show and I really, I just hate it so much, the review part. And then my friend always says, you know, well, Godfather two got one star from Siskel and Ebert or something like that.

• 44:35Tig Notaro?

  Is your friend Ira Glass?

• 44:37Mae Martin?

  Yeah. It's Thomas actually.

• 44:40Tig Notaro?

  Well, you know.

• 44:42Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 44:42Tig Notaro?

I'll read reviews. What I don't get into though is comments.

• 44:46Mae Martin?

Yes. Oh, it's a garbage fire.

• 44:49Tig Notaro?

Yeah, like that kind of thing. I'm just not, I mean, of course, it's hard to not take in a comment here or there, but I don't, I'm not interested in, in, it's not that I'm not interested in what people have to say, but like I.

• 45:07Mae Martin?

That's why, like with the, the premiere and saying it felt like, like my wedding and stuff. I was like, oh yeah, I forgot that it's not about this. Like I was so excited for that moment to celebrate it and everything. And then I was like, no, of course this is stressful and you're, and still work and you're managing everybody's, you know, and like it is the process of making it. That's the best part.

• 45:30Tig Notaro?

  Yes, for sure.

• 45:31Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 45:32Tig Notaro?

Just connecting with people on set and, um, but I'm, I'm definitely interested. I find, I'm so curious about insights that people have about a show in a review, you know?

• 45:47Tig Notaro?

Where I'm like, oh yeah, we, we missed that or, um, that would have been an interesting thing to, to add. Um, but you know, sometime, or like things like Reddit, like that doesn't, that doesn't interest me. You know, but a reviewer, I don't know. I, I'm not, I'm not opposed to, uh, to reading that.

• 46:13Mae Martin?

Listen, if it's, if it's good, I'm reading it. If it's bad, I'm like, they don't know what they're talking about.

• 46:19Tig Notaro?

Do you feel that way? Do you feel, or do you ever feel like, oh, cause I've read bad reviews about myself and been like,

• 46:28Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 46:28Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 46:29Mae Martin?

That's fair. Touche. Yeah. Yeah. Of course, of course.

• 46:33Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 46:34Fortune Feimster?

Well, it's also tricky when you also created it and are starring in it. It's like,

• 46:39Mae Martin?

  There's nowhere to hide.

• 46:40Fortune Feimster?

Even more invested in a way that, you know, just being an actor is not.

• 46:46Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 46:47Mae Martin?

Do you read reviews though, Fortune? Like? When a standup special comes out.

• 46:51Fortune Feimster?

Done has been like, a lot of the stuff I've done is like light broad comedies, you know? So it's more just like, oh, that movie wasn't funny. And you're like, okay.

• 47:02Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 47:05Fortune Feimster?

It's not like some, some drama where your true, this big actor-y side has to come out.

• 47:15Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 47:16Fortune Feimster?

So like, yeah, I've seen reviews and it's been like, they're either into it or they're not. You're just kind of go, okay.

• 47:24Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 47:24Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 47:25Tig Notaro?

It's funny because being in this industry, I mean, for myself, you get so used to being critiqued and instant feedback from people laughing or not. And I don't know, for me, it's, I feel like in a positive way has hardened me. In that like, I just, I'm like, yeah, I'm not for everyone. Or yeah, you don't get my delivery.

• 47:51Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 47:51Tig Notaro?

Because people really, really can get destroyed by, by, um, by that kind of thing. Which is understandable.

• 48:01Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 48:02Tig Notaro?

But I, I feel like it has sent me in a, in a direction of like, yeah.

• 48:09Mae Martin?

Well, it's kind of like every time you get on stage, it's like a, you're a sort of self-esteem firing squad where you're, you know, standing there. And then, and then if you survive that over and over again, you're like, okay, it's gonna be all right. Like, I'm still gonna.

• 48:22Tig Notaro?

Has it hardened you in a good way or?

• 48:25Mae Martin?

  Yeah, a little bit.

• 48:26Tig Notaro?

  Uh huh.

• 48:27Mae Martin?

Maybe. I don't, yeah, I don't know. I'm feeling anxious about it this time around just because it's a different genre and like, I feel like people then review within the genre. They're like, is this, yeah. So I hope people just like let it wash over them and. Think of it like a new thing. I don't know. But yeah, yeah, I'm, I'll, yeah, it's all, it's all good.

• 48:47Tig Notaro?

  It's gonna be great.

• 48:48Fortune Feimster?

Well, it's a, it's one of those things too with Netflix. It's like, reviews are kind of subjective.

• 48:56Mae Martin?

  Mm hmm.

• 48:57Fortune Feimster?

And it'll, you know, I think a lot of people are gonna watch it and that's how they, um.

• 49:03Mae Martin?

  That metric, yeah.

• 49:04Fortune Feimster?

Met the, the, yeah, that's where they really lay their, um, the importance on.

• 49:10Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 49:11Fortune Feimster?

  The viewership.

• 49:12Mae Martin?

  Mm hmm.

• 49:13Fortune Feimster?

So the handsome folks come out and support me and watch Wayward.

• 49:17Mae Martin?

Like in our job, it is crazy that, so you have to keep making stuff. And that, you know, that's very exposing. You got, you know, vulnerable, personal stuff that you're like, I think this is worth putting out there. And then.

• 49:28Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 49:29Mae Martin?

You always kind of know, like, if I do one thing that's panned, like, one thing that's actually objectively bad, I might not get another thing after that. Like, you, you hope that you put in enough years that it's like, oh, you know.

• 49:43Tig Notaro?

  You'll give May another whirl.

• 49:45Mae Martin?

Yeah, yeah, but it is, I don't think it's gonna be panned, but you know what I mean? It's like, yeah.

• 49:51Tig Notaro?

Yeah, you have no idea what is coming.

• 49:53Mae Martin?

  No, no.

• 49:54Tig Notaro?

It could be the biggest sensation.

• 49:56Fortune Feimster?

  That's right.

• 49:57Tig Notaro?

And we'll never hear from you again. You'll be one of those people that's like, yeah, yeah, things are going good. My show's on top. I'm busy. I'm important and I don't need you no more.

• 50:07Mae Martin?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm, I'm only, I'm only taking Waymo cars now.

• 50:12Tig Notaro?

Whoa, May takes, you hear me out. Waymo cars. My friend is in town from, um, Colorado and she's never seen or heard of a Waymo car, cause it's only in four cities, I think, in the States.

• 50:28Mae Martin?

  Is that right?

• 50:29Fortune Feimster?

Jimmy Kimmel did a bit on his show where he picked up his, uh, I think it was his mom or had a Waymo pick her up.

• 50:37Tig Notaro?

  Mm hmm.

• 50:37Fortune Feimster?

  And, uh,

• 50:40Fortune Feimster?

He just like called her, was like, oh, I can't come, but I had a driver come get you. And she gets in and the door's locked and it starts going and she realizes no one's driving it. And they have cameras in the car and watching her go, oh, my God, oh, my, call Jimmy, call Jimmy. Oh, my God, freaking out. And it shows him like watching. It's so funny.

• 51:02Mae Martin?

  That's great.

• 51:03Tig Notaro?

He did that, what, on his talk show? That's great.

• 51:06Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. Cause if you don't know about these and you get in and a car starts driving itself, that would be wild.

• 51:13Tig Notaro?

Well, that's what I said to my friend. I was like, it said something casually about how there was no driver. And she's like, what do you mean there's no driver? There is zero driver in that car. That's what I mean. Um, and she's pretty blown away.

• 51:28Fortune Feimster?

We went full circle back to Waymo.

• 51:30Mae Martin?

Back to Waymo. See, that's why this, what a podcast.

• 51:33Fortune Feimster?

  What?

• 51:34Mae Martin?

A comeback, comeback queen. Exactly. We have to go back.

• 51:39Tig Notaro?

Call, we have to call back.

• 51:41Mae Martin?

  We have to call back.

• 51:42Tig Notaro?

You know it. You know we do, Jeff. You know it.

• 51:48Tig Notaro?

You know that, Jeff. Jeff, you know that.

• 51:51Mae Martin?

I'm just gonna adopt all your really specific.

• 51:54Tig Notaro?

I'm gonna write them all out and I'm gonna tell you about them and then please incorporate.

• 51:59Mae Martin?

  Yeah, great.

• 52:00Fortune Feimster?

  That's right.

• 52:01Tig Notaro?

  That's right. That's right.

• 52:03Mae Martin?

  That's right, right, right.

• 52:04Tig Notaro?

  Well, this was.

• 52:06Mae Martin?

• 52:07Tig Notaro?

It was a slice. It was a real treat. And if you enjoyed it and you want to share this with a loved one or an enemy, send it along.

• 52:17Mae Martin?

  Are you talking to me?

  It's so mild.

• 53:07Fortune Feimster?

They also wear mustaches sometimes. You've seen Tig.

What's going on? It's Lamorne Morris.

• 55:26Speaker 09

  And Hannah Simone.

• 55:28Speaker 08

And we host The Mess Around, a New Girl rewatch podcast on HeadGum. Now, here's the thing. Every single week, we chat about an episode of New Girl, and we really get into it. Like, we get up in there. We get up in there. You know, we reminisce about our times on set. We share behind-the-scenes tea. We react to rewatching episodes that we haven't seen in years. We talk about how Jake Johnson is dog.

• 55:49Speaker 09

That's not true. We talk about so many memories we have of working with the biggest stars on the planet. I'm talking Prince, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo.

• 56:02Speaker 08

We're just two BFFs having a good old time, okay? Sometimes, we even talk to other co-stars like Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Damon Wayans Jr., and your dad. We talk to your dad on this show as well.

• 56:13Speaker 09

Make sure you subscribe to The Mess Around wherever you get your podcasts. New episodes drop every single Tuesday.
