Welcome to the handsome pod. I am a refreshed revived co-host of the handsome pod. Uh, I'm your friend, Mae Martin, joined of course by

• 2:24Tig Notaro?

Your dear, dear friend Tig Notaro.

• 2:28Speaker 02

And fortune theme star. I love that you're refreshed.

• 2:33Mae Martin?

Guys, look out. You're gonna be dazzled by my personality. I feel like I've been really a quivery little shrimp. The last few apps I'm gonna be, uh, today it's gonna be explosive.

• 2:45Tig Notaro?

Wow. When does it get started?

• 2:49Mae Martin?

Um, maybe about 20 minutes in, you're gonna notice a spike.

• 2:53Speaker 02

  You are smiling a lot.

• 2:55Mae Martin?

Yeah, I'm back in LA. I'm like, I slept a bit. I'm feeling good.

• 2:59Speaker 02

  Good.

• 3:00Tig Notaro?

  That's nice.

• 3:02Speaker 02

We like it when you're refreshing. I wouldn't have said you are a quivery shrimp.

• 3:07Mae Martin?

Oh, you wouldn't? That wouldn't have been your choice of?

• 3:10Tig Notaro?

  No, that's what I said.

• 3:14Tig Notaro?

  No.

• 3:14Speaker 02

Well, you do seem to have a pep in your step and we like that.

• 3:18Mae Martin?

Yeah, I feel like it'll be a process catching up on like the sleep deficit, but yeah, I'm feeling, I'm feeling good. But going like eating my favorite foods again and like

• 3:27Tig Notaro?

Ooh, what are your favorite foods?

• 3:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:30Mae Martin?

  Well,

• 3:32Mae Martin?

microwaveable meals, you know, Amy's frozen, microwaveable mushroom risotto, you know?

• 3:38Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 3:40Tig Notaro?

Just like back to it. Couldn't get that in Toronto, huh?

• 3:44Mae Martin?

  I'm sure you can.

• 3:46Tig Notaro?

  I know you can.

• 3:47Speaker 02

It didn't taste the same, right?

• 3:49Mae Martin?

It doesn't taste the same, you know?

• 3:50Speaker 02

They put less chemicals in Toronto.

• 3:55Speaker 02

I have a pep in my step because today is the release of my new Netflix special, Crushing It.

• 4:02Tig Notaro?

  It's called Crushing It?

• 4:04Speaker 02

  It's called Crushing It.

• 4:05Tig Notaro?

  That's amazing.

• 4:07Speaker 02

So I'm very, I'm very proud. As you guys know, putting out a special, it's a whole long, two-year, however, long process and um, just very pumped for people to watch it. I hope people will watch it.

• 4:22Tig Notaro?

And is it top secret right now that you're wearing a pink suit?

• 4:26Speaker 02

  It's not top secret anymore.

• 4:27Tig Notaro?

  Okay, word is out.

• 4:29Speaker 02

Well, I would said in our pretty little episode that our pod inspired me. Yeah, because I really love our, um, you know, not to be vain, but I really love our photo of us.

• 4:40Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 4:41Speaker 02

Our hands, our main handsome photo, because we look very handsome.

• 4:46Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 4:46Speaker 02

And I, I wanted to just, um, yeah, I wanted to go with that feeling. And so I had a custom made suit made and, um,

• 4:56Mae Martin?

  It's pink.

• 4:57Speaker 02

  It's pink.

• 4:58Mae Martin?

  Very handsome.

• 4:59Speaker 02

I even say in the special, if you watch, there are two references to our podcast. So our listeners will have to let us know if they caught either of those.

• 5:11Mae Martin?

  Oh, my God.

• 5:13Tig Notaro?

  I can't wait.

• 5:14Mae Martin?

I like, in my, in my mind, you had in your closet, like a gown picked out to wear and then the suit next to it. And you're umming and ahhing between the two, and then you threw the gown out and you went with the suit.

• 5:24Speaker 02

That's right. I mean, I, one of the, one of the references is pretty, is like, right off the bat.

• 5:29Mae Martin?

  Really?

• 5:30Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 5:30Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 5:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:32Tig Notaro?

I can't wait for this thing to drop.

• 5:35Speaker 02

  It's here, baby, today.

• 5:37Tig Notaro?

You know, you should do to promote the special is be a guest on the handsome pod.

• 5:42Mae Martin?

That's actually, that's a very meta idea. Do you think we should do an episode ever where one of us asks the question?

• 5:50Speaker 02

  Is the question.

• 5:52Tig Notaro?

We'll put it on the list, right, Thomas? You know?

• 5:56Speaker 02

Put it on the list, Thomas. But for now, put on the list, watching my special on Netflix, crushing it.

• 6:02Mae Martin?

Were you at all influenced by, I think I said early on in the pod, that like, one of the only things I know about fashion is my mom told me, pink is very flattering to your complexion. I held, and I've like, held on to it my whole life where I'm like, you want to glow? Wear pink. And, and I think you are glowing.

• 6:19Speaker 02

Thank you. Well, I would do, I wanted something bright, um, that caught people's eye. And I do like that our pod has a, we celebrate. All, you know, handsome can mean so many things to so many people who are presenting themselves in the way that is best for them and feels good and is authentic to them. And I like the pink and the suit and the play on, just kind of forging your own path of what handsome looks like.

• 6:48Tig Notaro?

Yeah, that's so cool. I'm a little jealous that I didn't think to do that, but I'm also not filming a special right now.

• 6:55Speaker 02

Yeah, that's right. Yours already came out and it was awesome.

• 6:58Mae Martin?

When you release something, whether it's like a special or a show or something, how good are you at staying off social, like, do you read all the reviews and social media and stuff? Or are you?

• 7:08Speaker 02

  Um, I'll glance.

• 7:09Tig Notaro?

  I read reviews.

• 7:10Speaker 02

You do? Yeah, I'll, I'll read reviews. If, if anyone reviews it, I would probably read it just because they don't review a lot of standup. I don't think, I'll, I'll read maybe some Instagram comments to see if it's resonating with people or if they like it, but I'm not like scrolling every, every line.

• 7:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I don't, I don't deep dive on it at all. I'm really curious because I feel like sometimes when there's reviews, I learn things about myself that I was.

• 7:40Speaker 02

  Oh, interesting.

• 7:41Tig Notaro?

  Blind to, you know?

• 7:43Mae Martin?

Like Tig does her trademark thing where she touches her left shoulder and you're like, do what?

• 7:48Tig Notaro?

Well, yeah, I remember, um, the New York Times did a piece on my Taylor Dane story.

• 7:54Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 7:55Tig Notaro?

And they said how it was like a signature thing of mine that I repeat things over and over and I never noticed that. And it's not just in that story. Um, it's in several bits of mine, jokes, stories, whatever. I never realized that. And anyway, so aside from being curious what people have to say, I, I do find that I learn things or maybe reviewers say things that maybe I knew deep down and then, um, you know, and then reading it and I'm like, I think they are right, even if it's like a negative thing.

• 8:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:37Tig Notaro?

Um, but I, yeah, I don't, I can't, even if it's just like a post of me with my cat, like I can't deep dive on.

• 8:48Tig Notaro?

All of the responses to what people have to say.

• 8:51Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 8:52Speaker 02

Well, because comedy, it's like art, it's subjective, you know, some people I know some people are gonna love it and find it hysterical and other people would hate it.

• 9:01Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 9:01Speaker 02

And there's no control over that. I mean, all I try to do is like all of us, when we have a special come out is you just have to get people to watch it because that's the only way to get another one.

• 9:11Mae Martin?

  Yeah, seriously.

• 9:12Speaker 02

It's just trying to be that, you know, there's so many voices of male comics out there and they get so much attention and I think us trying to get different points of view out there is important.

• 9:26Tig Notaro?

That's why you gotta throw on a pink suit.

• 9:28Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 9:29Mae Martin?

  Yeah, man.

• 9:30Tig Notaro?

Maybe, you know what, my next special, I'm gonna wear a pink suit.

• 9:36Speaker 02

Seeing you in all pink would be pretty funny.

• 9:38Tig Notaro?

And then May, you do your next special in pink?

• 9:42Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 9:43Tig Notaro?

Are you working on new material, uh, May?

• 9:46Mae Martin?

Yeah, I'm pumped to be, to have some time. That truly, this has been the craziest six months ever and I'm so pumped to have any time. I'm gonna, yeah, I'm gonna be, I have no idea what I want to say.

• 9:59Tig Notaro?

So you haven't started writing? You haven't like made notes or gone on stage or done a set or anything like that?

• 10:06Mae Martin?

I haven't done a set in, in, yeah, about six months, which is the longest I've been maybe since I was a teenager. But then, but before the six months, I had like half an hour of new stuff that I'm gonna go back to that probably isn't relevant to me at all anymore, you know, like that I'm.

• 10:24Speaker 02

Cause I saw you were going back up at Largo, that that's starting again.

• 10:28Mae Martin?

Yeah, going, going back up at Largo and things here and there.

• 10:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:32Mae Martin?

  Yeah, I'm excited.

• 10:33Speaker 02

Well, you're gonna have a lot to say.

• 10:35Mae Martin?

Oh, man, I, am I, I gotta get into the bear story. I gotta, you know, there's a lot to unpack for sure.

• 10:43Tig Notaro?

I love that you're like, boy, am I ever, I've gotta get into the bear story.

• 10:46Speaker 02

  Bear story, number one.

• 10:48Tig Notaro?

Number one, and the list ends there.

• 10:52Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 10:52Tig Notaro?

If you just talk about bears the whole time, that's still, that's a solid special.

• 10:58Mae Martin?

Right? If I just narrow it down?

• 11:00Tig Notaro?

Really, I've gotten really into mountain goats lately.

• 11:04Speaker 02

  Really?

• 11:05Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 11:06Mae Martin?

  Oh, man.

• 11:06Tig Notaro?

I'm a big fan. Are you really? Yes. I am so deeply obsessed with mountain goats and have been forever. Like, whenever I'm driving through the mountains with my family, I always tell my kids, "Look for mountain goats because they will just be standing on the wall of a mountain."

• 11:25Mae Martin?

  Like, on a vertical ledge?

• 11:28Tig Notaro?

  Vertical, yes, question?

• 11:30Mae Martin?

  I have a question.

• 11:31Tig Notaro?

Go to YouTube. Fortune just raised her hand. Go to YouTube.

• 11:34Speaker 02

What is the difference between a goat and a mountain goat?

• 11:38Tig Notaro?

  Wait, is this a joke?

• 11:39Speaker 02

Is it just that the goat's on the mountain?

• 11:42Tig Notaro?

Wait, have you not seen a mountain goat, Fortune?

• 11:45Speaker 02

  I don't, I guess not.

• 11:47Tig Notaro?

  Okay, a goat, you can-

• 11:49Speaker 02

  They look different?

• 11:50Tig Notaro?

Well, I mean, they've got the body of like a barrel, and then they've got like little kind of stick legs and then cloven hooves, and then they stand on a vertical wall.

• 12:01Mae Martin?

They're definitely more majestic and impressive.

• 12:05Tig Notaro?

That does seem hard. It is insane that this animal exists on a wall.

• 12:13Mae Martin?

Yeah, and like, what compel, but what compels them to do it? Like, I guess they're looking for little plants to eat and stuff, but then they've got to get down from there at some point, and you never see that part.

• 12:23Tig Notaro?

Oh, oh, well, let me tell you something. Out here in Tor- I am not somebody that looks at YouTube or like, I, you, I'm not in YouTube world.

• 12:35Mae Martin?

  Okay.

• 12:35Tig Notaro?

So I'm in Toronto, I had a couple of days off, and they were slow days, and I, and I'm telling you, I think about mountain goats all the time. And so, one day, I thought, well, I was in my kitchen, I thought, well, I was thinking about mountain goats, I thought, I bet they're on, I bet I could find some mountain goats on YouTube.

• 12:58Mae Martin?

  Hell, yeah, you could.

• 12:59Tig Notaro?

Yes, and I went over to my computer, and I put mountain goats into YouTube, and-

• 13:07Tig Notaro?

Oh, boy, did that entire day go away.

• 13:10Mae Martin?

  Wow.

• 13:11Tig Notaro?

Watching them jump from vertical wall to vertical wall and zigzag between two mountains. Do you understand? And like

• 13:21Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 13:21Tig Notaro?

Land perfectly fine on like a ledge that's as big as a kernel of corn. And they just stand there.

• 13:29Mae Martin?

But it gives you, it gives you hope because it gives me hope because I'm like, I could, we could do anything. Because these guys don't look like they're built to climb. They're, they're, like you said, a barrel and some stick legs, like they can barely bend their legs. And yet they're like the most agile.

• 13:45Tig Notaro?

And there's, not to bring up bears again, but bears, wild cats, eagle, eagles drag these animals away.

• 13:53Mae Martin?

  Oh, my God.

• 13:54Tig Notaro?

And, and they just live on a wall. Anyway, I, I can move, I, I'll move on, but how did I get to this?

• 14:02Mae Martin?

  I'm not sure. I don't know.

• 14:04Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 14:04Mae Martin?

I know you just said you're a fan, a fan of mountain goats.

• 14:08Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I'm always trying to wedge it in somewhere, but um, yeah. Oh, I was talking about it on stage because the day that I, I just, an entire day went to me looking at mountain goats. And I am not exaggerating.

• 14:23Tig Notaro?

  Fortune.

• 14:27Tig Notaro?

  Thank you for that.

• 14:28Mae Martin?

Were you trying to sneak in?

• 14:29Speaker 02

I'm trying to adjust something and I just hit my sound effects.

• 14:33Tig Notaro?

  You hit your Cinderella noise?

• 14:35Mae Martin?

That's the sound of a day evaporating through the mountain goats.

• 14:38Tig Notaro?

That's what um, Fortune's gas sounds like. Now, um, listen.

• 14:46Tig Notaro?

Okay, so after I watched mountain goats all day, I had a show at Comedy Bar here in Toronto. And I went up there and as soon as I walked on stage, I was just so full of mountain goat energy. And I just started ranting and raving about them and uh,

• 15:05Mae Martin?

  Are you a Capricorn?

• 15:06Speaker 02

  Good question.

• 15:08Tig Notaro?

  Um, you mean like with?

• 15:09Mae Martin?

Like, is your, your star sign?

• 15:11Tig Notaro?

  No, no, I'm Aries.

• 15:13Mae Martin?

  Okay, okay.

• 15:14Tig Notaro?

  I'm Aries.

• 15:14Speaker 02

Wait, as opposed to what, Tig?

• 15:16Tig Notaro?

Wait, what do you mean as opposed to?

• 15:17Speaker 02

You were like, am I Capricorn in what way?

• 15:20Tig Notaro?

Well, yeah, I guess I was pretty sure that you meant that in astrology. But what are you?

• 15:29Speaker 02

What kind of Capricorn do you think I am?

• 15:31Mae Martin?

Did you think I said Capulet, like in Romeo and Juliet?

• 15:34Tig Notaro?

Listen, I was still thinking about mountain goats.

• 15:36Mae Martin?

  Right, sorry.

• 15:37Tig Notaro?

  What's your sign?

• 15:39Mae Martin?

  Uh, Taurus, I'm the bull.

• 15:41Tig Notaro?

Okay, and Fortune, what are you?

• 15:43Speaker 02

  I'm a Cancer.

• 15:44Mae Martin?

  Don't say that about yourself.

• 15:46Tig Notaro?

  And Thomas, you're June, right?

• 15:50Mae Martin?

  Is that Gemini? No.

• 15:52Tig Notaro?

  You're not, you're May.

• 15:52Mae Martin?

  He's shaking his head.

• 15:53Speaker 03

  I'm a Virgo.

• 15:54Tig Notaro?

  Wait, are you May?

• 15:56Mae Martin?

  Virgo is September.

• 15:58Tig Notaro?

  September.

• 15:59Mae Martin?

  That's hot.

• 16:00Speaker 02

  I knew it, it's September.

• 16:01Tig Notaro?

  September 7th.

• 16:03Speaker 03

  Six.

• 16:04Tig Notaro?

  Six.

• 16:04Speaker 02

  Definitely Virgo.

• 16:06Tig Notaro?

  Well, we just met.

• 16:07Mae Martin?

People that I've been in love with have been Virgos, like, like, most of the people have been between kind of mid-August and end of September. Really significant relationships for me.

• 16:19Tig Notaro?

I've been in love all over the place.

• 16:21Mae Martin?

Tig, I think you should get a mountain goat tattoo or something like, I think similar, the way I'm electrified by bears right now, you're lighting up about these goats, and I think you need to lean in.

• 16:30Tig Notaro?

Okay, well, I'm not a tattoo person, I'll be honest.

• 16:33Speaker 02

  Yeah, me neither.

• 16:34Tig Notaro?

  I, I'm just not, you know, I, I don't, I just don't want a tattoo on my body.

• 16:41Mae Martin?

  Yeah, that's fair.

• 16:42Speaker 02

  I don't want the pain.

• 16:43Tig Notaro?

I can't even claim that I'm terribly attracted to tattoos either. I think they look cool on people, but like, I'm not like, oh, I gotta get myself a tatted up lady, you know?

• 17:01Speaker 02

• 19:42Mae Martin?

I have one, I mean, I have, I have about 20 tattoos, but I have one on my, I've talked about this one before that says oatmeal on my wrist.

• 19:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 19:50Mae Martin?

I got it because this, this woman, I was like 16 and she was older and she drew it on my wrist in a kind of flirtatious way and I got it tattooed to surprise her.

• 20:00Tig Notaro?

I'm sorry, flirtatious, drawing oatmeal, oh, writing the word oatmeal on you? Or drawing a bowl of oatmeal on you?

• 20:07Mae Martin?

  Writing the word.

• 20:09Tig Notaro?

  Also terrible flirting.

• 20:10Mae Martin?

Yeah, neither is very flirtatious, but she was like.

• 20:12Speaker 02

What do you think of this bowl of oatmeal?

• 20:16Tig Notaro?

  What about overnight oats, May?

• 20:20Speaker 02

Have you ever had oatmeal with raisins in it?

• 20:25Tig Notaro?

  Oh my gosh, sexy Fortune.

• 20:28Mae Martin?

Oh my God, if I close my eyes.

• 20:30Speaker 02

Do you like cinnamon or brown sugar in your oatmeal?

• 20:34Tig Notaro?

Go to YouTube and look at Fortune's sexy face.

• 20:38Mae Martin?

Yeah, also, I don't know why I said if I close my eyes, I want to see this, that's part of it.

• 20:41Speaker 02

Yeah, May, don't close your eyes. You want to have some oatmeal with this.

• 20:52Tig Notaro?

  That's what Jack gets?

• 20:54Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 20:57Mae Martin?

Do you ever do that in, like in her ear, like right in her ear?

• 20:59Speaker 02

  No, she would be horrified.

• 21:03Tig Notaro?

As am I, as am I.

• 21:05Speaker 02

  You're not turned on, Tig?

• 21:09Speaker 02

All right, to each their own.

• 21:11Mae Martin?

But I always remember that when, so this woman was trying to help me choose a tattoo and so she was drawing like different options and one of the ones she drew that I was close to getting was a seatbelt across my whole chest. It was truly.

• 21:25Tig Notaro?

I would get that over oatmeal. I mean, that is such a funny idea. That I almost want that, but that's good. And then would you have the buckle on there too?

• 21:36Mae Martin?

Yeah, I'm sure around my hip would be the buckle.

• 21:38Speaker 02

  That is a large tattoo.

• 21:40Tig Notaro?

That's a good one. Whose idea was that?

• 21:43Mae Martin?

It was hers and I was so on the fence about whether to get that or oatmeal. Thank God, I went with the tiny oatmeal.

• 21:49Tig Notaro?

No, no, oh my God, if you had a seatbelt, that is so good.

• 21:55Speaker 02

  You're all about safety.

• 21:56Mae Martin?

  All about safety.

• 21:58Speaker 02

Buckle up, click it or tick it. That would be under the seatbelt, click it or take it.

• 22:05Tig Notaro?

Yeah, you get pulled over by the cops, you take your shirt off, you're like,

• 22:09Speaker 02

  I was buckled.

• 22:10Tig Notaro?

You rip your shirt open. Okay, so I'm, you know, neck deep in, in mountain goat life. You're neck deep in bear life. What about you, Fortune? It can't be Biggie.

• 22:21Speaker 02

  It can't be Biggie.

• 22:24Tig Notaro?

  No, because of course. Yeah.

• 22:26Speaker 02

  I'm a baby bear.

• 22:27Mae Martin?

You need like an animal energy that you're channeling for this last section of the year.

• 22:32Speaker 02

  Yeah. Okay.

• 22:34Mae Martin?

Especially the special coming out, the pink to me says flamingo, like, is that a sexy?

• 22:40Speaker 02

  Flamingos are very sexy.

• 22:42Tig Notaro?

  Fortune talking sexy again.

• 22:44Speaker 02

Because flamingos, flamingos are the sign of swingers.

• 22:52Mae Martin?

  Are they really?

• 22:53Speaker 02

Yeah. I talked about it in my last special, Good Fortune. I said that there's ways you can let people know that you're a swinger and flamingos in your yard is one of those signs.

• 23:05Mae Martin?

  No.

• 23:06Speaker 02

Which gets very confusing in Florida and at my mom's house.

• 23:09Tig Notaro?

So wait, you can just swing by someone's house?

• 23:15Tig Notaro?

If, if you see it for swingers, if you see a, a flamingo in the yard, you can just go ring a ding?

• 23:22Mae Martin?

I don't think swingers means that you can just swing by, that anyone can swing by.

• 23:26Speaker 02

There's more to it. It's, it's a flamingo or upside down pineapples.

• 23:33Tig Notaro?

  Hello.

• 23:34Mae Martin?

  Hello.

• 23:35Tig Notaro?

  Pineapple together.

• 23:37Mae Martin?

  But upside down, interesting.

• 23:38Speaker 02

Yeah, I don't know why upside down, but that's a sign of swingers. I didn't know that this, I just heard about it.

• 23:45Tig Notaro?

Now, Fortune, would you ever consider being a swinger? And what is a swinger? Like you're, like, you're in couples and you trade off?

• 23:53Speaker 02

I think so, like keys in the bowl.

• 23:56Mae Martin?

Is it that specific or is it just like we part, like we'll hook up, like?

• 24:00Speaker 02

I think it's like a key party, right?

• 24:02Tig Notaro?

Wait, wait, what is a key party? I, I don't even know what that is.

• 24:05Speaker 02

  Here are the rules, everybody.

• 24:07Tig Notaro?

Tell us in your sexy voice.

• 24:09Mae Martin?

  Please tell us sexy.

• 24:10Speaker 02

Everybody, okay, welcome to our party. This is the, this is the key party now.

• 24:16Tig Notaro?

This isn't sexy. This is not the same voice you did.

• 24:19Speaker 02

  She's giving rules.

• 24:20Mae Martin?

She, she got really shy all of a sudden.

• 24:23Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 24:23Speaker 02

I'm very shy. The night is young. So here's what's gonna happen.

• 24:28Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 24:29Speaker 02

  Is that better?

• 24:29Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 24:30Speaker 02

Here's what's gonna happen. Everybody's gonna take their car keys out, okay? And some people have the keys where the keys, like, you can like murder someone with the key. And then there's other keys where the, the thing goes into the thing and it's just a, a rectangle. It doesn't matter.

• 24:49Tig Notaro?

Okay, you can still murder people with that.

• 24:51Speaker 02

That you put in the bowl represents you.

• 24:54Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 24:54Speaker 02

Now, what you're gonna do is you're gonna put your hand into the bowl like you're pulling out a number. And when you grab out your keys, you're gonna say, whose keys are these?

• 25:08Speaker 02

And then the person whose keys they are, guess what? You're gonna fuck.

• 25:19Speaker 02

I couldn't say it. You're gonna have sexual relations.

• 25:23Tig Notaro?

You did say it. What do you mean you couldn't say it? You said it.

• 25:26Speaker 02

  I said it, okay.

• 25:27Tig Notaro?

You kind of, you kind of wease-

• 25:28Speaker 02

It came all the way out.

• 25:30Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 25:30Speaker 02

You kind of weased it. I weased it.

• 25:34Speaker 02

That's happened at the keyboard of you.

• 25:36Tig Notaro?

So you pull the keys out and that's who you're-

• 25:38Speaker 02

That's who you get, that's who you're with. That's a swinger party, baby.

• 25:41Tig Notaro?

  So you gotta make sure-

• 25:42Speaker 02

  No fucks.

• 25:43Tig Notaro?

  That you're into every- I mean, I don't-

• 25:47Speaker 02

You gotta be careful with that guest list.

• 25:50Tig Notaro?

And I don't drive, so I'm gonna have to be putting in-

• 25:52Speaker 02

  You gotta-

• 25:53Tig Notaro?

You can put in your house key.

• 25:55Speaker 02

Just take a key, it doesn't matter.

• 25:57Tig Notaro?

Okay, so swingers, I thought swingers were like, I thought that was two couples and then you kind of do-si-do with the-

• 26:04Speaker 02

  Swap.

• 26:05Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 26:06Speaker 02

There's, listen, there's no rules to swinging.

• 26:08Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 26:08Speaker 02

I think that's also, that's also allowed. Swapping, swapping partners.

• 26:14Tig Notaro?

Okay, so we're, so we're thinking flamingo may be too confusing if that's your energy for the-

• 26:18Speaker 02

  No, I'm, I think it's fun.

• 26:20Tig Notaro?

Okay. Wait, you're into the idea of swinging?

• 26:24Speaker 02

No, I haven't done that, but I like flamingos.

• 26:26Tig Notaro?

  Into the idea of it?

• 26:28Speaker 02

I don't, this isn't, this isn't lights off, buddy, you know what I mean? Well, no one said anything about the lights.

• 26:34Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 26:35Speaker 02

I feel like swingers are like-

• 26:36Tig Notaro?

  We're talking about your desires.

• 26:38Speaker 02

I know, but I think they're the ones that are lights on, baby. Anything goes, we're poking holes.

• 26:44Tig Notaro?

Whoa, and then what if Jax came to you and said, I would like to check something out and swing myself over yonder?

• 26:54Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 26:55Mae Martin?

  Swing myself over yonder?

• 26:56Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 26:58Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 26:59Tig Notaro?

You'd have to cross that bridge.

• 27:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, cross that flamingo bridge.

• 27:03Mae Martin?

We'd have to get a Stare Perrell on the phone and be like, a Stare?

• 27:05Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, she'd be good to talk to.

• 27:07Mae Martin?

  How do we navigate this?

• 27:08Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 27:09Mae Martin?

And she'd be like, what would it feel, what would it feel like to you?

• 27:12Speaker 02

What would you feel if that happened?

• 27:14Mae Martin?

See, okay, that's the key to Tig's pants is be a Stare.

• 27:19Speaker 02

  A Stare.

• 27:20Mae Martin?

Fortune's sexy voice did nothing for you, but if I did a Stare, maybe-

• 27:23Speaker 02

Tig was over there throwing up and I did it.

• 27:25Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I'd follow May all the way home. And then where are you, what are you feeling these days, May, as far as like swinging and dosey doin' and keys in a bowl? Or are you like?

• 27:38Mae Martin?

I'm down. I feel like, um, I think it's situation specific. I think it, I've, it really depends who you're with and what the vibe is. But yeah, I mean, I'm very pro keys in the bowl.

• 27:52Tig Notaro?

And then so what if, what if somebody, what if somebody grabs keys in the bowl and then they were like, that was fun? And then your person wants to grab those keys out of the bowl again? Are you like a grab them one time and move on? Or are you like, okay, I guess we're opening the door to a bunch of key grabbing?

• 28:14Mae Martin?

It so depends, right? I feel like if I'm present for it, then, then all bets are off. Like, you know what I mean? If you're a couple and then you're all involved, I don't know. I don't know. It really depends, but I think I'm open to whatever.

• 28:27Speaker 02

  May's a lights on person.

• 28:30Mae Martin?

  Lights on, pineapple upside down.

• 28:33Speaker 02

Key grabs, pineapple does not need to be a part.

• 28:36Mae Martin?

But I feel like we're getting it more of an insight, Tig, into your feelings about it. Cause you're like, no, what if they want to do it again? And I, no, no, what if-

• 28:44Speaker 02

  What are these rules?

• 28:45Mae Martin?

Yeah. You know what? I'm pict, I'm picturing that like the key party starts and there's some orgy happening. And then the camera kind of pans up and Tig's like a mountain goat on the wall. Like Tig, you're just, you're perched on a vertical wall near the ceiling, just being like, well, look down there.

• 29:01Tig Notaro?

  Looky there.

• 29:03Speaker 02

Oh, man. Gosh, how do we get on these topics?

• 29:06Mae Martin?

  I don't know.

• 29:07Speaker 02

  Was this my fault?

• 29:08Tig Notaro?

Mountain, yes, it is your fault. You turned it into a sexy com- I was just trying to talk about mountain goats.

• 29:14Speaker 02

  That is true.

• 29:15Tig Notaro?

And then, and then you started getting everything all sexy.

• 29:18Speaker 02

Y'all brought up flamingos and I told you what flamingos stand for. That's it.

• 29:23Tig Notaro?

So this goes back, it traces back to you. You were the one that brought up swingers and then I was like, what does that even mean?

• 29:30Speaker 02

  And what are the rules?

• 29:33Mae Martin?

Did you know that flamingos are only pink because they eat shrimp? And if they didn't eat shrimp, they wouldn't be pink. They're only pink because of their diet.

• 29:40Speaker 02

  May fact.

• 29:41Mae Martin?

May fact. And did you know that, like, I think I've talked about this. It's one of my favorite things to Google. If you Google teenage flamingo, it's one of the only animal species where it has the most awkward adolescent phase, like a human. Like, it just looks like, why am I alive? And it's still kind of, it hasn't turned pink yet.

• 29:59Speaker 02

  Those lanky legs.

• 30:00Mae Martin?

  It's all fluffy.

• 30:01Tig Notaro?

  Hasn't had a shrimp yet.

• 30:02Mae Martin?

Probably hasn't had enough shrimp yet.

• 30:03Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 30:04Mae Martin?

Yeah. Teenage flamingo is one of my faves.

• 30:06Speaker 02

  Did not know about this.

• 30:08Tig Notaro?

  Well.

• 30:08Speaker 02

  Thank you for sharing.

• 30:09Tig Notaro?

May fact. What just happened? Was that Thomas? That was Thomas.

• 30:17Speaker 02

Is that our new May fact signal?

• 30:20Tig Notaro?

I think it's our old one.

• 30:21Speaker 03

I had that from a while back.

• 30:23Speaker 02

I knew that. I knew that. We haven't had a May fact in a minute, so.

• 30:27Tig Notaro?

Should we move on to our questioner this week? Speaking of handsome.

• 30:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:32Tig Notaro?

I mean, I mean, basically, if you have a dictionary on hand, which I would assume every listener does when they listen to our podcast, because we do use very advanced language and we learn so much. And it's good to just keep an encyclopedia and dictionary near you, because if you open a dictionary and you look up handsome, you will see me, Fortune, May.

• 31:01Tig Notaro?

  And our questioner, and Thomas.

• 31:03Mae Martin?

  And Thomas.

• 31:04Tig Notaro?

Thomas, absolutely. Today's questioner is an actor best known for his Emmy-winning portrayal of Don Draper on Mad Men. He also starred in the latest season of Fargo, as well as The Morning Show.

• 31:21Mae Martin?

  Oh, boy.

• 31:21Tig Notaro?

Jon Hamm is asking today's question.

• 31:25Speaker 02

  So sexy, that Mr. Hamm.

• 31:36Tig Notaro?

Go to YouTube, go to YouTube.

• 31:38Mae Martin?

Can you, Fortune, can you like come out of a birthday cake for me on my birthday?

• 31:44Speaker 02

  We've been waiting for you.

• 31:46Mae Martin?

  Yeah, Hampson.

• 31:48Tig Notaro?

  Hampson.

• 31:49Mae Martin?

Hampson. No, I can't say it.

• 31:51Tig Notaro?

  Jon Hampson.

• 31:52Mae Martin?

  There you go.

• 31:53Speaker 04

Hey, handsome pod, it's Jon Hamm, and I have a question for you.

• 31:57Speaker 05

Guys, I have a surprise. We're ready for a first-team rehearsal nine minutes early.

• 32:02Speaker 04

Thank you. What was the earliest you've ever been called to set? Is it nine minutes?

• 32:10Speaker 04

What was the first book that you ever read that truly affected you? I will wait for your answer offline.

• 32:18Tig Notaro?

Can I just, can I just tell you? So I flew from Toronto back to LA to film one day on The Morning Show.

• 32:26Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 32:26Tig Notaro?

And when I was filming Jon do this question, the lighting was really terrible, and Jen grabbed a lighting thing and stood behind me to light Jon.

• 32:40Mae Martin?

Jennifer Aniston was, was your grip?

• 32:42Tig Notaro?

Jennifer Aniston was the grip on this shoot. And that was that crazy laugh in the background, too, if you heard.

• 32:50Mae Martin?

  That's incredible.

• 32:52Tig Notaro?

That's Jen. But the publicist, The Morning Show publicist, was watching the whole thing go down. And then after we finished, she goes, "Oh, I cannot believe I didn't pull my phone out and film Jen." Lighting this question.

• 33:10Mae Martin?

Yeah, that would have been funny.

• 33:13Speaker 02

Well, Jen loves the handsome pod. We know that.

• 33:15Tig Notaro?

She does love the handsome pod. And you know who really loves the handsome pod is Jen's private chef.

• 33:22Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 33:23Tig Notaro?

I think I've told you all that.

• 33:25Speaker 02

You did tell us and we wanted to, we tried to invite ourselves over for dinner.

• 33:29Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 33:29Mae Martin?

  Yeah, that's what happened.

• 33:31Tig Notaro?

And word got out, but no invitation happened.

• 33:34Speaker 02

Cool, cool. Cool. I'm available for Jen's Christmas party too.

• 33:40Tig Notaro?

Yeah, just putting it out there.

• 33:41Speaker 02

  Just putting it out there.

• 33:43Tig Notaro?

But yeah, so when I filmed John, when Jen and I filmed John, we got him looking handsome because we got that lighting.

• 33:51Speaker 02

He looked very handsome. He's a handsome fellow.

• 33:54Tig Notaro?

  He is so handsome.

• 33:55Speaker 02

Because Don Draper was the, the like, like classic handsome.

• 34:00Mae Martin?

I mean, he looks like he's from that era, right? That's like, it's perfect casting. He's got that like old time movie star kind of.

• 34:08Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 34:08Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah. Well, books, eh?

• 34:11Speaker 02

At first he said first book and I was like, oh God, first book. I'm like, Good Night Moon?

• 34:16Mae Martin?

  Yeah, Hungry Hungry Caterpillar?

• 34:24Speaker 02

But first book that really stuck with us.

• 34:28Tig Notaro?

I mean, you laugh, but one of my childhood books really was, but I have an older one, but man.

• 34:35Speaker 02

  Give it to us.

• 34:36Tig Notaro?

Okay, I'll give it to you. I was so into, and I believe I've talked about this before. I talk about it all the time, but Amelia Bedelia.

• 34:45Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 34:46Mae Martin?

So she's, what's the deal with her? What's her vibe?

• 34:50Speaker 02

What is the deal with her?

• 34:51Tig Notaro?

With Amelia Bedeal. Yeah. What is the, what is the deal? She takes things literally.

• 34:58Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 34:59Speaker 02

I couldn't remember either what her deal was.

• 35:02Tig Notaro?

When I was in elementary school and it was story time and you get in a little circle and teacher reads and you choose a book and whatever, I was always raising my hand like requesting Amelia Bedelia. I just thought she was the funniest, like she was a housekeeper, I think. And I always give the example of the people that she worked for would leave a list of things for her to do.

• 35:29Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 35:29Tig Notaro?

And one of the things on the list, which is hilarious, is draw the drapes. And she took it literally. She puts, sets up an easel and she draws the drapes. And I was a cackling.

• 35:46Mae Martin?

I feel like this would have inspired early take bits.

• 35:49Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 35:50Mae Martin?

Like, like I can picture like your mom being like, hop in the shower. And you're like, oh, hop in the shower?

• 35:55Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 35:56Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 35:56Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it was so my sensibility. And I think it really influenced my comedy, honestly.

• 36:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 36:03Tig Notaro?

But then when I was older, I think in junior high school, maybe, I can't remember the year. But I was really into, I mean, I'm very into music, but I was, I was very into the story of Sid and Nancy.

• 36:20Mae Martin?

Oh, yeah, you talked about this.

• 36:22Tig Notaro?

  Oh, yeah.

• 36:23Mae Martin?

There's a book that I need to read. Yeah, that, oh, that like electrified you their toxicity and you were like.

• 36:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's called, and I don't want to live this life. And it's written by Nancy's mother.

• 36:33Mae Martin?

Can I tell you something? I have it. I, I wrote down the name of it to, to look up when you told me that. And then the other day I opened the notes on my phone and I thought I had got really depressed and just written a really sad note. I don't want to live this life anymore. I was like, oh, my God, when did I write that?

• 36:50Tig Notaro?

Yeah, no, no, it's just a book that really, um, I don't know why it, it.

• 36:57Mae Martin?

I think maybe that, like the gritty, I think when you're a teenager, like you're drawn to that grittiness and that.

• 37:03Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 37:04Speaker 02

  It's a real life story.

• 37:06Tig Notaro?

Yeah, real life story written about, I mean, I was so into the Sex Pistols. I was so into the Sid and Nancy story. I had seen the movie. I had, and then I found out about this book. And like I said, I think I read it three times.

• 37:22Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 37:23Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 37:23Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, as a kid.

• 37:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 37:24Tig Notaro?

And it's very dark, very, very dark, but really, really interesting, very sad. Yeah, I'm drawn to that kind of stuff. I like dark and sad.

• 37:34Mae Martin?

Me too. Portion, what about you?

• 37:37Speaker 02

Well, I'll give you two books. I have that one, like earlier childhood book that always resonated with me. It was Tuck Everlasting.

• 37:44Mae Martin?

  What's that?

• 37:45Speaker 02

It's about the, God, I don't remember the details, but the, the broad sense of it was that, uh, he wanted to, to live forever. And thought that that was the greatest thing. I'm pretty sure that's the book. Hold on.

• 37:59Mae Martin?

  Um.

• 38:00Tig Notaro?

Sounds like it really made an impression.

• 38:06Mae Martin?

  Classic Fortune Google.

• 38:07Speaker 02

Am I mistaking it with something else?

• 38:14Speaker 02

  Um, okay, wait, oh, God.

• 38:17Tig Notaro?

Take your time, take your time. This is good. This is good for podcasting.

• 38:21Speaker 02

  Was it not this book?

• 38:22Tig Notaro?

Fortune's Googling and sifting through her phone.

• 38:27Speaker 02

It never feels like this isn't the book.

• 38:29Tig Notaro?

It definitely feels like it's not.

• 38:31Speaker 02

Whatever book I'm thinking of, I thought it was Tuck Everlasting. He wanted to live forever. But I can't remember why.

• 38:37Mae Martin?

And was he like a little?

• 38:42Speaker 02

Wait, let me Google did Tuck Everlasting?

• 38:45Tig Notaro?

John Hamm is such a handsome man. He is also so smart, so well read. He's all of these, he really is. He's such, he's such, he's got a lot of May facts. He's got a lot of information. He's lived a lot, a lot of lives.

• 39:04Speaker 02

  Love that.

• 39:04Tig Notaro?

And, and I think he'd be really disappointed in our responses.

• 39:12Speaker 02

Okay, this is, I am right.

• 39:15Tig Notaro?

  Oh, okay.

• 39:15Speaker 02

He wanted to live forever, but I can't remember why, or someone wanted to live forever.

• 39:20Tig Notaro?

  You've already said this.

• 39:21Speaker 02

Okay, so something about someone in the book.

• 39:31Speaker 02

Or, or had to live forever. I don't remember if it was a good thing or a curse, but you think it's, you think you want this?

• 39:38Tig Notaro?

Well, why don't you just speculate a bunch about what you think the book might have been?

• 39:42Speaker 02

And then you see everybody get older and die and you're alone and it's not so, it's not the awesome thing you thought it was.

• 39:51Mae Martin?

  It's a kid's book?

• 39:52Speaker 02

  I don't remember May.

• 39:54Tig Notaro?

Oh, my God. I'm gonna tell John not to listen to this.

• 39:58Speaker 02

But the, the moral of the story was when you say you want something to last forever, I don't want this to end.

• 40:07Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 40:07Speaker 02

Cause I want this to last forever.

• 40:09Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 40:10Speaker 02

You don't really want that because the, the beauty of life is getting older and going and. Growing and getting wisdom and learning and if you just stay the same at one place, everything passes you by and it's sad.

• 40:24Tig Notaro?

  Right.

• 40:26Speaker 02

There's more to the story, but I don't remember. I just remember that was an important lesson. Important lesson. Yeah. When I was in college, I remember saying, I'm scared to graduate because it's so good that I want this feeling to last forever and I'm sad to leave. And my mom had me read that book.

• 40:50Tig Notaro?

  Oh.

• 40:51Speaker 02

Because it was a less, that lesson was in there of like, it's, you don't want this to last forever.

• 40:57Tig Notaro?

When you were in college, your mother had you read a children's book?

• 41:00Speaker 02

  I don't think it's a children's, I don't know if it's a children's book or not. I don't think it's a children's book, but it's not, not one.

• 41:07Tig Notaro?

No way to know. This is the book that you love so much.

• 41:11Speaker 02

  Book.

• 41:13Speaker 02

And anyway, she was right because I've had a thousand cooler things happen since then. That I never thought was possible because I thought this was as good as it's gonna get.

• 41:24Mae Martin?

Yeah. In a way, Ginger could have just told you that lesson.

• 41:28Speaker 02

Maybe she did. Maybe I didn't even read the book.

• 41:31Tig Notaro?

This probably isn't even a book.

• 41:32Speaker 02

  I don't, I feel like maybe I didn't read the book.

• 41:35Mae Martin?

  It's feeling like that.

• 41:36Speaker 02

Maybe my mom just told me this lesson. Okay, let me tell you about a book I did read. Or May, why don't you tell us a book? And then I'll go back to the book I did read.

• 41:45Mae Martin?

Okay. I also have two. The earlier one is a book called Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Yeah, we are disappointing Jon Hamm here for sure. This is not like a literary list, but it was a collection of short stories. If you saw the cover, you'd be like, oh, fuck yeah, I remember that. It was way too scary. And every story was like two pages or something. And there was this one story in it called Taili Poe. And I feel like for some reason, Thomas would know about Taili Poe. But basically this guy, he's like a hunter and he catches this creature and, and takes its tail, but the creature gets away. And then every night he's in bed and he hears, Taili Poe, Taili Poe.

• 42:29Speaker 02

Give me back my taily po.

• 42:31Mae Martin?

  And I was like,

• 42:32Speaker 02

  Scary.

• 42:33Mae Martin?

Ah, I was so scared. And then it comes into his room and because he eats the tail and it digs into his stomach and gets its own tail back. And I was, oh, and I think there was another one about a guy who eats bubble gum and there's spider's eggs in it or something. Anyway, it was really scary. And taily po was like a big part of my-

• 42:55Speaker 02

  Heard of taily po.

• 42:56Tig Notaro?

And Thomas was nodding, yes, you're familiar with taily po?

• 43:00Speaker 03

Yeah, I remember that book. The one I was thinking of, I don't think it's in that book, though, was The Green Ribbon.

• 43:06Mae Martin?

  Oh, my god, yeah.

• 43:08Speaker 02

  The Green Ribbon.

• 43:09Mae Martin?

Not The Green Ribbon, which was that the ribbon was tied around-

• 43:14Speaker 03

  A girl's neck.

• 43:15Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 43:16Speaker 03

And, you know, bad things would happen if it like came off.

• 43:22Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 43:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah, it was scary.

• 43:26Speaker 02

  Reading some intense stuff.

• 43:28Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, really getting in there.

• 43:30Mae Martin?

Like later in life, the Neverending Story, that book, and My Side of the Mountain, about a kid who runs away and lives in a hollowed out tree and he's got a buddy who's a ferret and just like the fantasy of the solitude of nature and being like 11 and you just live in the woods and and he learns to do everything himself. That was big for me. Yeah. I mean, not, not that I'm a nature person at all or have ever been.

• 43:54Speaker 02

  Outside.

• 43:55Tig Notaro?

An adventure seeker. You're an adventure seeker, though.

• 43:59Mae Martin?

Yeah, I was like, wow, that sounds good. Anyway, good night.

• 44:03Speaker 02

  Those are great.

• 44:04Mae Martin?

I mean, in my teens, I read a lot of like the, like Jack Harrowax's diaries that are just transcribed and, and, and that kind of like pretentious stuff that I was, you know, like, oh, I gotta be like, like Bob Dylan's autobiography and stuff.

• 44:18Tig Notaro?

  Oh, yeah. Sure. Got to.

• 44:20Speaker 02

  I did read a book-

• 44:21Mae Martin?

  Here we go.

• 44:22Speaker 02

  In college.

• 44:25Speaker 02

And then it was from a North Carolina author. Her name's Kay Gibbons. She made it on the Oprah's Book Club list at one point, not for this book. But the book, she wrote a book that I think would maybe only interest someone that grew up where I'm from, or in a matriarchal family. The book was called Charms for the Easy Life. And I, it was the first time that I read a book that I could like really see myself in a book. Because it's about a grandmother, a mother, and a daughter. And it was very much of what my life looked like. At the time, my grandmother had just passed.

• 45:05Speaker 02

She was very matriarchal, head of our family, the like glue that held everybody together. My mom was like, at that time, she was kind of finding herself and on her journey. And then I was this like rule follower, responsible kid, trying to like, people please and do the right thing all the time. So the book follows that family. It's kind of, it was kind of an early book on like Southern feminism, which was very rare at that time. Because we were coming from a time where men were very much the like center of the families and the decision makers and like everything kind of revolved around them.

• 45:49Speaker 02

And I went to a women's college and it was the first time I was gay. I didn't know I was gay. But it was the first time that I started learning about feminism and the difference of like being in a classroom where I didn't realize how little we got called on in high school. Things were starting to get pointed out to me that I never.

• 46:13Mae Martin?

Yeah, you were questioning those paradigms and all the ingrained beliefs.

• 46:18Speaker 02

So my English teacher in college had us read that book and it really blew me away to like see a family like that where men were not necessary. And the women were- Did you hear that, fellas? The women were so strong. The grandmother in particular was like such a, she was a natural healer. And it takes place in rural North Carolina. And there were a lot of similarities there with me and my grandmother. And like the, the girl, like, um, her grandmother passed and her feeling that when it happened, that was very similar to me. And, uh, yeah, it was just, uh, it came at a time in my life where I was like, oh, this is like, I could see myself in that book.

• 46:58Speaker 02

And just, it really opened my eyes to a lot of things that I had not, you know, being from the South, really thought about before in terms of finding your power or whatever that is, you know, your strength.

• 47:10Mae Martin?

Tig, I'm amazed you never read, uh, Huckleberry Finn, cause it feels like that's the life you lived. Like, I feel like-

• 47:17Tig Notaro?

  Huckleberry Tig.

• 47:18Mae Martin?

  That's, yeah.

• 47:19Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 47:19Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 47:20Tig Notaro?

You know, I was out actually having my Huckleberry adventures.

• 47:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 47:26Tig Notaro?

But I was so obsessed with comedy.

• 47:31Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 47:31Tig Notaro?

When, when I was little. I, I've, I've become less and less enchanted by it, but, um-

• 47:39Mae Martin?

I actually, I remember when I was 11, we went on a family trip to Rome and the, the four of us. And, um, it was just a tense trip. My parents were fighting, everyone was fighting. But I had this book called The Comic Toolbox that was like, how to be a comedian. And if I read it now, it would probably be a joke. Like, it was like, how to write a sketch. And it was like, uh, two pages, how to write a stand-up bit. But it had little exercise books in it, like that you fill out. I wish I had it, cause I remember being like at the Vatican and like sitting in a corner, scribbling in this book. And it was a real comfort to me, cause it was like, take whatever tension in your life and explore it. And yeah, the comic toolbox.

• 48:20Tig Notaro?

Well, that's why I, you know, why mountain goats are my go-to right now. That's a lot of tension for me that I'm dealing with. But did you feel like that actually put you on, what, was it helpful and insightful, even if you laughed at it now, like at the time? I mean, it must've been like, oh, I'm holding the key to all- Comedy right here.

• 48:39Mae Martin?

Totally. Yeah. It was, it was kinda like one of those books, like The Artist's Way or something that was like, oh, you have something to say and you just need to figure out your point of view and,

• 48:48Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 48:48Mae Martin?

And I was, yeah, like 11.

• 48:51Tig Notaro?

So you have that book to think.

• 48:52Mae Martin?

I've got a lot to say.

• 48:55Speaker 02

Steve Martin's book is really good. He, he was such a huge stand-up, like selling out like giant like arenas. And then in like one day, she's like, ah, I don't wanna do, I don't wanna do this anymore. Yeah. That part, that part of his career.

• 49:10Tig Notaro?

Uh huh. And then he's just like off playing a banjo, you know?

• 49:14Mae Martin?

Yeah, I respect that a lot.

• 49:16Tig Notaro?

One year when I was nominated for a Grammy, I was asked to present at the whatever, you know, the Grammy, or you know how the award shows have the daytime thing and then the nighttime thing? And Steve Martin and Edie Raquel had recorded an album together. I mean, they, they collaborate a lot. And it was at those daytime awards. A lot of times, big stars don't show up to that. And so it was like a whole day of presenters calling out.

• 49:52Mae Martin?

  Names and no one.

• 49:53Tig Notaro?

Huge names and they're like, yeah, Bueller could not be here today and in his place, uh, we will accept this award. And then you move on to the next one. And so I announced Steve Martin and Edie Raquel. And I'm a huge fan of both of theirs.

• 50:09Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 50:10Tig Notaro?

And I'm like thinking, of course they're not gonna be here. And then I see like one of my biggest comedy heroes and musical heroes walking to the stage towards me. And I was like, are you kidding me?

• 50:25Mae Martin?

  Wow.

• 50:26Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it was really such a fun, uh, unexpected moment, especially because nobody was showing up to these awards. But yeah, that's, it's just an interesting trajectory and it just shows you that you can move on and reimagine your life and do different things and, um.

• 50:47Mae Martin?

You could become a mountain goat. You could be, this is, I could become a pencil salesman. I keep fantasizing about going door to door selling pencils.

• 50:54Tig Notaro?

  And you will.

• 50:55Mae Martin?

  Thank you. Yeah.

• 50:55Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 50:57Speaker 02

  Dream?

• 50:57Mae Martin?

Yeah, I keep, I don't know why I always come back to a pencil salesman.

• 51:01Tig Notaro?

Mm hmm. Well, you can't get those in stores.

• 51:04Mae Martin?

Well, yeah, exactly. There's a real appetite for them.

• 51:06Tig Notaro?

Yeah, you gotta take them door to door.

• 51:08Mae Martin?

Those Steve Martin albums, like, um, my parents had the vinyls and I was so like, I would just sit like so tense in my body, listening to them. Like, I couldn't believe it, that you could be so irreverent. And when he's like, "Excuse me!" I was like, "Oh, my God."

• 51:28Speaker 02

Which now is like, not irreverent at all.

• 51:30Mae Martin?

  No, not at all.

• 51:31Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 51:31Speaker 02

  It's like so tame.

• 51:33Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 51:33Tig Notaro?

I know, it's so wild when you watch comedians from long ago, and I'm not saying Steve Martin is hacky, but like you, even like you watch Richard Pryor and

• 51:45Mae Martin?

Lenny Bruce, you're like, "I would have walked out."

• 51:49Tig Notaro?

It, it, it just doesn't even seem like cutting edge or groundbreaking or, and it's because they were the first.

• 51:56Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 51:57Tig Notaro?

And there's been so many people that have emulated their style and

• 52:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 52:03Tig Notaro?

God, even watching my old comedy, which I do all the time. I mean, whenever I have free time, I

• 52:09Speaker 02

It's just on loop at your house.

• 52:12Tig Notaro?

No, but when I do see old comedy of mine or hear it or something, you know, I'll be on tour and something will come on the radio when I'm driving around and I'm like, oh, cringing.

• 52:23Mae Martin?

  Oh, yeah.

• 52:24Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 52:24Tig Notaro?

  Hearing myself, "Oh."

• 52:27Mae Martin?

  Oh, my God.

• 52:27Speaker 02

I just used to yell punchlines all the time.

• 52:30Mae Martin?

Yell punchlines is a great tactic.

• 52:32Speaker 02

It just like, I thought in my head that the louder I was, the funnier it was.

• 52:36Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 52:37Speaker 02

And that is not the case.

• 52:41Tig Notaro?

  Sometimes it works, though.

• 52:43Speaker 02

Sometimes it was okay, but I do watch some of those old clips with like, I just can't believe it, but that's part of evolving, you know, hopefully.

• 52:55Tig Notaro?

Well, yeah, evolving as a, an individual comedian, but also comedy evolving in general.

• 53:03Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah, cuz even comedy is in such a different place now because I feel like it was never, it was rarely personal back in the day.

• 53:11Tig Notaro?

  Uh huh.

• 53:12Speaker 02

  It was observational.

• 53:14Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 53:14Speaker 02

And now I feel like people are like, who are you? What do you feel, you know, what do you, people seem to want to know more about your personal life than, than comedy was before.

• 53:25Mae Martin?

Can I say that, that, The Neverending Story, that book that a guy I was dating got it for me and, and wrote a little inscription and gave me rainbow gloves? He was a lot older and I was like obsessed with him and then I found out he gave the exact same book to this, a different girl, the same Christmas, and he wrote the same inscription, word for word.

• 53:46Speaker 02

Dirty Rat and the Rainbow Gloves?

• 53:49Mae Martin?

  And the Rainbow Gloves.

• 53:50Tig Notaro?

  Dirty Rat.

• 53:51Speaker 02

Oh, God, he's, I've never read that book, but I'm also now not going to.

• 53:57Mae Martin?

  Never read it.

• 53:58Tig Notaro?

I am so sorry you went through that, man.

• 53:59Mae Martin?

  Thanks, Tig.

• 54:00Tig Notaro?

Should we, um, hear what, uh, John has to say?

• 54:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:04Tig Notaro?

  Remember him?

• 54:05Speaker 02

I bet he has a, I bet he has a smart book.

• 54:07Mae Martin?

  What if it's Amelia Bedelia?

• 54:10Speaker 02

Is, is he gonna hate our answers?

• 54:13Tig Notaro?

  Of course.

• 54:15Speaker 02

He doesn't want to read Charms for the Easy Life, how dare, or Talk Everlasting.

• 54:19Mae Martin?

Talk Everlasting is a mystery to me still.

• 54:22Speaker 02

By the way, I realized I did not read that book. It was a lesson my mom gave me.

• 54:29Speaker 02

My mom reads like a book every three days.

• 54:31Tig Notaro?

He is gonna hate this episode. Okay, let's hear what he has to say.

• 54:36Speaker 04

The first book that ever truly affected me was a book by John Irving called A Prayer for Owen Meany. Um, I found it to be spiritual and amazing and intense, and it was one of the first books I ever read that wasn't assigned to me. And I maybe want to read all of John Irving's books, which I then did.

• 54:50Speaker 02

I knew it was gonna be something that wasn't good.

• 54:54Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 54:54Mae Martin?

Now I'm thinking of all smart answers we, I should, I want to say.

• 54:58Tig Notaro?

It's too late, it's too late.

• 54:59Speaker 02

Have I ever read a deep book?

• 55:02Speaker 02

I've read a lot of biographies.

• 55:05Tig Notaro?

  I love biographies.

• 55:07Mae Martin?

But you remember how in when we were kids, like you would tease someone for being a bookworm? And now I feel like people reading books are like geniuses that anyone who has the attention spent now, a kid reading a book, it's like, oh my God, thank God, you're incredible. And back then it was like, huh, bookworm.

• 55:22Speaker 02

I don't know why I don't read more because seriously, my mom and grandmother both read, like, were at the library constantly and both could read a book every two to three days, finish it.

• 55:36Mae Martin?

  I know why, Fortune.

• 55:37Speaker 02

  Why?

• 55:38Mae Martin?

Best Fiends, the phone game that you ruined my life with.

• 55:42Speaker 02

  I know, sorry bud.

• 55:43Mae Martin?

We gotta get off it and we gotta get back into reading.

• 55:45Speaker 02

I gotta, I gotta read, I gotta read more. This is Jon Hamm, thank you for reminding us, books are important.

• 55:51Tig Notaro?

Thank you, Jon Hamm. Thank you, Jon Hamm.

• 55:54Speaker 02

Reading is good, it is good for our brains too, especially as we get older, we need to, we need to keep reading.

• 56:00Mae Martin?

I am reading since I finished filming, I am reading a book for the first time in like a year, I'm reading Lullabies for Little Criminals, it's a Canadian book, it's a kind of story, coming of age story of this girl's life on Skid Row, it's really good.

• 56:14Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 56:14Mae Martin?

  Would recommend.

• 56:15Tig Notaro?

  That sounds interesting.

• 56:16Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 56:17Speaker 02

  Cool.

• 56:17Tig Notaro?

Well, we did it again, friends.

• 56:19Mae Martin?

We did it again, we pulled it off.

• 56:21Speaker 02

  Wow, you guys.

• 56:23Tig Notaro?

And you did keep your spirits up, May.

• 56:25Speaker 02

  You did.

• 56:26Mae Martin?

Look, I don't know if I dazzled everyone, but I definitely.

• 56:29Speaker 02

Give 'em the old razzle, dazzle.

• 56:36Mae Martin?

  That was good.

• 56:37Speaker 02

I will just remind people one more time, if you're looking for something fun to watch, please, please watch my new Netflix special streaming now called Crushing It.

• 56:51Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and watch it right now that it's come out because soon it won't hold up.

• 56:58Mae Martin?

Watch it now and it could be one of the things that impacts you greatly as a young-

• 57:02Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 57:03Tig Notaro?

It could be a special that people are using as an example of what doesn't hold up. So, watch it now.

• 57:10Speaker 02

You should watch it because I was inspired by the book Duck Everlasting in order to make this special and see the handsome shout outs and let us know if you, if you caught those and tag, yeah, if you want to post them and tag us, I wouldn't mind that.

• 57:28Mae Martin?

Have some, have some viewing parties and, and tag us.

• 57:31Tig Notaro?

  Put on a pink suit.

• 57:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:33Mae Martin?

Oh my God, everybody wear a pink suit.

• 57:35Tig Notaro?

Wear a pink suit, tag us in your pink suit and yeah, watch Fortune's incredible special. I saw it live before she taped and it was, she crushed it. She's not lying about, in that title, she crushed it.

• 57:50Speaker 02

  Hey, Bunny.

• 57:52Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 57:52Speaker 02

You know where else people can have viewing parties?

• 57:55Mae Martin?

  Where?

• 57:56Tig Notaro?

  In your pants.

• 57:57Speaker 02

We have a very exciting announcement because the holidays are upon us.

• 58:01Mae Martin?

  Oh, boy.

• 58:03Speaker 02

Checking Allstate first could save you hundreds on car insurance. Not checking that my outfit matches the vibe of the evening before heading out the door. I regret everything. The night called for a black t-shirt, but I wore a white one instead. And now everything's out of alignment.

• 1:00:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, checking first is handsome. So check Allstate first for an auto quote. It could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary, subject to terms, conditions and availability. Allstate, North American Insurance Company and affiliates, Northbrook, Illinois.

And we host The Mess Around, a New Girl rewatch podcast on HeadGum. Now, here's the thing, every single week, we chat about an episode of New Girl and we really get into it. Like we get up in there, we get up in there, you know, we reminisce about our times on set. We share behind the scenes tea. We react to rewatching episodes that we haven't seen in years. We talk about how Jake Johnson is dog.

• 1:01:08Tig Notaro?

That's not true. We talk about so many memories we have of working with the biggest stars on the planet. I'm talking Prince, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo.

• 1:01:21Speaker 02

We're just two BFFs having a good old time. Okay. Sometimes we even talk to other co-stars like Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Damon Wayans Jr. And your dad. We talk to your dad on this show as well.
