• 1:32Speaker 04

That's my goal for 2019. 16 years. How long you been faithful?

• 1:39Speaker 03

Give it up right now for the legend himself, Gary Owen.

• 1:43Speaker 03

Gary is a legendary comedian, absolutely hilarious. There's no special, uh, no S is available at mintcomedy.com. Make sure you go check that out. It's Gary Owen.

• 1:52Speaker 05

  No S.

• 1:53Speaker 03

  You hear that?

• 1:54Speaker 05

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:54Speaker 03

Yeah. We know that. There's one person on the couch that might not.

• 1:59Speaker 05

  People love the letter S.

• 2:03Speaker 05

At the restaurant, can I get some shrimps?

• 2:13Speaker 03

I think, do Latinos do that, too? Do they pluralize?

• 2:16Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 2:17Speaker 03

Yeah, you don't know. You don't have that.

• 2:18Speaker 05

  It's not my audience.

• 2:20Speaker 05

Yeah, I didn't know it was just my friends until Kanye said.

• 2:23Speaker 03

Prince Williams ain't doing it right, if you ask me. And I was like, Prince William? How the fuck you get Williams? It's not a last name.

• 2:29Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Glad people love that letter, boy.

• 2:32Speaker 06

  Is it really Serena William?

• 2:36Speaker 05

  I've never Googled that. I don't know. That's crazy.

• 2:40Speaker 06

Anyway, you're a big, you're a big football fan, right? What did you make of the Shador Sanders thing? Do you care about college ball at all, or are you just Bengals?

• 2:47Speaker 05

I think we made a, we made a lot of, of nothing. It's not the first guy to drop. I mean,

• 2:52Speaker 03

  Five rounds is crazy, though.

• 2:54Speaker 05

Well, you got it right. There was really only like five or six teams looking for a quarterback in the beginning. It wasn't like 32 teams. Like, the Bengals was not going to get him. You know what I mean? The Ravens were not going to get him. So when they act like all 32 teams, I go, really? We all knew it was five or six teams. And it was the Giants, the Saints, the Titans. They went and got Cam. Wars, they were out.

• 3:16Speaker 03

  Right.

• 3:17Speaker 05

It literally, every, every round, it was, you were looking at four teams.

• 3:20Speaker 06

That's right. If you already got a quarterback, you're not even picking it up.

• 3:22Speaker 03

Here's where I disagree. I think there's five or six teams not looking for a quarterback. The Bengals, because they got Burrow. The Ravens, because they got Lamar. The Bills, because they got Josh Allen. Couple other teams. If your quarterback isn't that tier, the Chiefs, Smalls, you're looking for a quarterback. If you're Dak, if you're the Cowboys, you got Dak Prescott. He's old. He's coming off a season-ending injury twice in the past three years. Draft a fucking quarterback. Most teams, your quarterback's not good. So you might as well draft a guy, take a chance in the third, fourth round, and just see what happens.

• 3:48Speaker 05

Well, I'm also thinking next year is supposed to be quarterback-heavy. So do you want to bring him in? Now, you know, you're not going to win, or like, you know what? Let's hold off, get this D lineman, get this.

• 3:58Speaker 06

And what's that thing? If you have two quarterbacks, you have no quarterbacks?

• 4:00Speaker 05

Yeah, and the Browns got five.

• 4:04Speaker 05

But he's got a shot. He's in a perfect situation now.

• 4:06Speaker 06

So explain, yeah, because the expectations are low. Now you can only exceed expectations.

• 4:11Speaker 05

And to build a new stadium, if he comes and balls, they're going to be in a dome next year.

• 4:15Speaker 03

  Oh, wow.

• 4:15Speaker 05

  I mean, he's gonna be.

• 4:16Speaker 03

  He's gonna be comfy, yeah.

• 4:17Speaker 05

Yeah, he's gonna be, that's what he keeps saying. He's in the cold. I go, no, he's not.

• 4:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 4:21Speaker 05

No weather to worry about after next year.

• 4:23Speaker 03

  That's great.

• 4:24Speaker 06

Yeah, it was weird. It was like, I don't understand if GMs are, if NFL GMs are like the most open-minded people, or they're racist, because it's like, if you beat your wife. They'll be like, I, you know.

• 4:37Speaker 05

  They expect that a black.

• 4:38Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 4:39Speaker 05

  Whoa, wow. Not me, no.

• 4:41Speaker 03

  They're racist.

• 4:42Speaker 05

Oh, my God. They're racist. You should have went on the pivot. Yes, you should have went on. Come on. What are you doing there? I think G M's all racist. That's my point. I watch it happen with a black quarterback every year. Justin Fields went to a bad situation. He wasn't good, but Fields, Fields.

• 4:58Speaker 05

  He should have.

• 4:59Speaker 06

  They got Phil.

• 5:00Speaker 05

I'm questioning everything. He fell for no reason. Lamar Jackson fell out of the first round. It's always, I don't see this happen with white quarterbacks very often. What are you talking about? Tim Couch won the Heisman at Nebraska. They drafted him and said, you gotta switch positions. Cause he sucked. Okay, somebody can say the same thing about Shador. Years ago, Shador can actually throw a ball. Tim Couch played in like a wishbone offense.

• 5:19Speaker 06

Sports, sports, sports suck. No, this is good.

• 5:22Speaker 05

I like this. Sports and racism collide. It's a pivot.

• 5:30Speaker 05

I'm a very proponent of black quarterbacks.

• 5:32Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 5:33Speaker 05

They ain't come to see me.

• 5:36Speaker 05

You know what I mean? The white ones don't. Hey, everybody on the show.

• 5:39Speaker 06

I've been seeing some white people at your shows recently, bro.

• 5:42Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's starting to happen.

• 5:43Speaker 06

I've been seeing some fucking white people at your shows and gays. I saw that clip with the gays.

• 5:48Speaker 05

Dude, I did a, I did, this gay guy sat in the front.

• 5:52Speaker 06

No, the moment there was like five of them.

• 5:54Speaker 05

Well, that's, that's what I was getting to. There was a gay guy sat in the front in Ontario and we, we got it. It just, the, the, the stars aligned. It was perfect. He laughed at every joke. He was open to everything. He had like my boyfriend tastes better shirt or something like that. Posted that. It did great on the internet and then I come to Houston and now there's a line of gay guys like, yeah, we saw the video. I was like, oh shit, this might be the audience. I didn't even know.

• 6:20Speaker 06

  So it's hard time.

• 6:23Speaker 05

  Yeah, and they love S's.

• 6:29Speaker 05

They're gonna get my. Gary, no R for this here. That's fucking awesome.

• 6:40Speaker 03

  Fucking cracker.

• 6:42Speaker 03

White people showing up to your shows, gays showing up to your shows, this is crazy. You're like 20 something years into, how many years? 25?

• 6:50Speaker 05

  97, so 28?

• 6:51Speaker 03

  28 years into your career.

• 6:53Speaker 05

  Wow. Harlem.

• 6:54Speaker 03

  White people found you.

• 6:56Speaker 05

  They did.

• 6:57Speaker 03

You started posting on YouTube, Instagram, white people find you, the gays find you. Now, how does the black community feel about this? They've held you down for 28 years.

• 7:05Speaker 05

I've, I've, I've got enough equity in the community.

• 7:08Speaker 03

  Then it's fine.

• 7:09Speaker 05

  They're good.

• 7:09Speaker 03

So they, they're just, they don't feel like the white people are taking the thing that they started in?

• 7:14Speaker 05

Well, gotta buy their tickets sooner. White people buy in advance, so.

• 7:21Speaker 03

That shit happened to me too, because you know for years, my audience was only black, right? Like, people knew me from Guide Code and they knew me from Brilliant Idiots. And, uh, so I'd do clubs around the country and like the owners would say, which I'm sure they said to you initially, they were like, you look, the way you look and your audience does, like, what exactly is going on? They didn't understand it. And, uh, and it was funny, like, once, once I did Rogan and like, white people started finding out about me, then white people buy tickets in November for a show in April.

• 7:46Speaker 05

  You're in line.

• 7:47Speaker 03

Day, uh, early on that shit.

• 7:48Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You, you're, you, MSG would have been sweating bullets.

• 7:53Speaker 03

  Night before.

• 7:54Speaker 05

  What the fuck?

• 7:55Speaker 03

  50% capacity?

• 7:57Speaker 05

The walk up to you. Now, I heard a rumor, and I don't know if it's true, but maybe DL can, uh, DL Hughley can confirm it one day, but when he got the Hughleys.

• 8:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 8:06Speaker 05

  It really crossed him over.

• 8:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 8:08Speaker 05

In the mainstream, and the rumor was.

• 8:10Speaker 03

That's why he got the neck tattoos, he was like, I gotta keep these white people away from me.

• 8:15Speaker 05

The rumor was, he would tell the, the comedy clubs, this show, don't sell in advance. Because they were, all white people was buying it so far in advance, he goes, like, the late show Saturday, we're not putting that on sale yet. That was the rumor I heard.

• 8:29Speaker 03

  That's cool.

• 8:29Speaker 05

  That's awesome.

• 8:30Speaker 03

Yo, Gary. Here's a good question, right? Both of us have done Uncle Shannon's podcast.

• 8:36Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 8:37Speaker 03

This is really why we wanted you to be on here. Outside of your special being out, you having this prolific career, being one of the most successful touring comedians in American history, you've been doing this shit 28 years.

• 8:46Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 8:47Speaker 03

Okay, a lot of people don't realize that, people have little bumps and blips, but 28 years is not a game. You go on Shannon's podcast, almost immediately afterwards, some little white girl sues him for, uh, a horrible thing.

• 9:01Speaker 05

Did you introduce, did? I introduced you to a white girl. You know that. That's completely out of my wheelhouse.

• 9:12Speaker 05

You're trying to bring her back. I've said it numerous times. I ain't had white pussy since white pussy had me. No way. Wait, you haven't had a little? One, 1996. No. That's where I was born. Met her at a TJ Friday's. That's where I was. Whoever you are, you ruined everything. It was on Highway 8 in San Diego. It was bad, that? It was bad? No, no, no, no, no. It must have been bad, you never went back? No, she was a white girl that only liked black dudes. And she?

• 9:42Speaker 05

And we both said, we're just gonna try. She tried to introduce you to what happened? We both made a consensus decision, you know what, bucket list? Check. Like a gay and lesbian hooking up to see?

• 9:55Speaker 05

Just to try. Think about female.

• 9:59Speaker 05

  I didn't realize that didn't sound good.

• 10:02Speaker 05

Okay, so why, you've never, and you never got? Were you just never into white girls, or were they not into you, or what was it? A little bit of both. There's a little bit of both. He's insane. It was like, even when I was in the Navy, we'd go out, I'd stay in San Diego, and we'd go out to Pacific Beach. Yeah. It's all beach bars, white people, there'd be one black girl. And at the end of the night, my boys would be like, how does this happen every night? I'd just be in the corner. I don't know why, I don't know, just, mm, they liked me, I liked them, so we just went with it. And have you been like the first white guy for a lot of? Oh, so many.

• 10:35Speaker 05

If I hear this shit one more time, oh, so the myth ain't true? Let's go, Gary. Let's go, Gary.

• 10:46Speaker 05

  Okay, what myth, what myth?

• 10:49Speaker 05

As our white delegate. Thank you so much. So you're the first, now knowing you're the first white guy? Okay, knowing you're the first white guy, do you ever, are you ever?

• 10:59Speaker 03

Like, let me just do some like wild shit and then just blame it on being white. Like, do you ever do that?

• 11:04Speaker 05

No, I'm actually, I'm probably a little more apprehensive. I'm not really a talker.

• 11:08Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 11:08Speaker 05

So, you know, it makes you uncomfortable when, because Gary is not the best name in the bedroom.

• 11:14Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 11:15Speaker 05

You know, you hear, "Oh, you beating this pussy up, Gary?"

• 11:23Speaker 05

There are certain names, like Rodney, sounds like you can put some shit down.

• 11:28Speaker 05

Rodney boy? Rodney, Rodney's the name that looks like you put it down the bedroom, but ain't gonna pan out in life.

• 11:38Speaker 05

If you, if you grow up with a Rodney, at some point, you will get this phone call as an adult, "Hey, you hear what happened to Rodney?"

• 11:44Speaker 06

It falls apart. It falls apart at 17, 18.

• 11:47Speaker 05

Rodney's a beast. He was a beast of a fullback.

• 11:54Speaker 05

But do you feel pressure as the, as the great white hope, you know?

• 11:57Speaker 03

  Like, like-

• 11:57Speaker 05

You're representing all of us, bro. If you, if you're in someone's first time with a white guy.

• 12:01Speaker 03

Like, there's probably a lot of black girls that fucked another white dude after you.

• 12:04Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 12:05Speaker 03

Because you represented us well. So, there's a lot of white dudes that got black pussy that might have never gotten it because of you.

• 12:12Speaker 05

You're welcome. You're welcome, fellas. Yup.

• 12:16Speaker 03

And then after that, they probably never did it again.

• 12:19Speaker 05

  They went back.

• 12:19Speaker 03

So, they, they went two times.

• 12:21Speaker 05

  Yup.

• 12:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 12:22Speaker 05

  It's probably happened.

• 12:23Speaker 03

  Yeah. But you don't care.

• 12:25Speaker 05

No, it's funny, like, there's a couple. Once you go white, you give it one more night. There's a couple exes. What's crazy, there are a couple exes from my past and then-

• 12:35Speaker 03

Was this while you were married?

• 12:39Speaker 05

Can you bring up that clip? No, no, no, no. No, no, no, we gotta bring up this clip. Give it a second immediately.

• 12:46Speaker 05

This one of the greatest clips in internet history. This one of the greatest clips in internet history. You need to get this clip up. It's brilliant, idiot. I'm starting to sweat. You gotta start from the beginning, beginning, though. That's the thing. You gotta put the volume all the way up. If we repost it, everyone has five million views every time.

• 13:00Speaker 03

Gary, tell, you might be a black comic.

• 13:04Speaker 05

I didn't know you could pull this up. I thought there was copyrights and that was yours.

• 13:08Speaker 03

Okay, let's go. This is while Gary is happily married.

• 13:11Speaker 05

Yeah, I'm gonna get you back to cheating, bro. This year, that's my goal. That's my goal for 2019. 16 years.

• 13:16Speaker 06

  How long you been faithful?

• 13:24Speaker 05

Don't laugh, don't laugh, you can't laugh. Laughing is incriminated.

• 13:28Speaker 03

Get me a towel. Somebody get me a paper towel, get him a shirt, get him something.

• 13:32Speaker 05

I didn't know you guys were gonna show that.

• 13:34Speaker 03

Let's get some AC on in here.

• 13:36Speaker 05

That came up in court, bro.

• 13:37Speaker 03

No it didn't. No it didn't.

• 13:40Speaker 06

  This is your fault.

• 13:41Speaker 03

  No it didn't.

• 13:42Speaker 06

  You ruined his marriage.

• 13:43Speaker 05

Yo, son. I can't, we settled, but it came up in court, so that's, I was like.

• 13:47Speaker 03

Gary, Gary, Gary's been coming on really late throughout the entire, like, destruction of his marriage. And it probably started in that moment where he couldn't swallow coffee while trying to pretend to be faithful.

• 13:59Speaker 05

I was like, why is this coming to me? Here's the funniest shit. You know, uh.

• 14:04Speaker 03

How big was the ice cube in your throat?

• 14:08Speaker 05

You don't appreciate this being a sports fan. Um, I randomly, I, I pressed follow to follow Max Crosby, the DN for the Raiders, right?

• 14:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 14:17Speaker 05

All of a sudden, he sends me a, a voice memo on, um, on IG like, brah, you're a legend, man. I'm thinking about to do one of my special, because they're the funniest shit ever. It's when they asked you if you was faithful. And you started choking, bro. That was legendary. I'm like this. Of all the shit I've done, Max, that's what you know me for? I mean, he has in the comic book. Like, the films, fucking shows, that's what the motherfucking knows me for. I mean, he was dying, like, oh my god, bro. That's the funniest shit. I feel like Marlon Wayans.

• 14:57Speaker 05

Marlon sweats on every, uh, every podcast.

• 14:59Speaker 06

Uh, wait, how did your lawyer defend the clip?

• 15:02Speaker 05

No, no, it wasn't, my, my ex, she said, she goes, I just saw a video. I didn't, I've never seen it before. I guess when everything came out, people started sending her shit. They said, you should have known. I was like this. So then she brought it up.

• 15:16Speaker 03

Okay, so you went, you had this. No, that was crazy.

• 15:20Speaker 05

  You were crazy for that.

• 15:22Speaker 03

Like, why didn't you just swallow?

• 15:23Speaker 06

  What was happening?

• 15:24Speaker 05

  What?

• 15:25Speaker 06

  What was happening?

• 15:27Speaker 05

I need the play by play. I was just gonna say, yeah. I was just gonna say, yeah, and I just came out right. Yeah. But the question was, how many years you been faithful? Yes.

• 15:43Speaker 06

Don't commit a crime with Gary.

• 15:45Speaker 05

Let's get back to my special.

• 15:51Speaker 05

Link him back. Link him back. God damn, that was funny.

• 15:54Speaker 06

  That was hilarious.

• 15:55Speaker 05

Alright, so you- It was so organic. Yeah. You had a crazy, you had a, you had this crazy divorce. It's sad, but it's over now. Everything's fine. Yeah, that's funny. And, uh-

• 16:05Speaker 05

Still watching this. The PTSD gets like, real. You know what? It's him destroying his mouth.

• 16:15Speaker 06

  Kobe, game five.

• 16:17Speaker 05

No, who's the guy, who's the guy, uh, what's his name? G-thing, yeah.

• 16:22Speaker 06

  G-thing.

• 16:24Speaker 05

  Yeah, I know that shit.

• 16:28Speaker 05

I want that first song. It's so good, dude. Actually feels good.

• 16:32Speaker 06

Bro, I don't, I don't want to point this out. This is how you know Gary's a black comic, is that you still have lotion in your ear a little. Don't wipe it off. I swear, do you see it?

• 16:41Speaker 05

  I don't see it, man.

• 16:42Speaker 06

I'm so sorry. I don't want to point it out.

• 16:44Speaker 05

  Sorry about that.

• 16:45Speaker 06

  But it is bad.

• 16:46Speaker 05

  I couldn't be here.

• 16:47Speaker 06

You guys still fucking this shit.

• 16:51Speaker 06

Oh, you're at a Marriott property?

• 16:55Speaker 05

That's definitely a Marriott. That's a Marriott lotion right there.

• 17:01Speaker 06

I'm sorry for pointing it out, but I couldn't. It was like gob in his ear, bro.

• 17:06Speaker 05

  Sweat bullets.

• 17:09Speaker 05

Why am I here? Watching my son fall.

• 17:13Speaker 05

Why are you looking at my son? It's 60 degrees. It ain't even hot. I'm freezing.

• 17:21Speaker 06

  I still like him.

• 17:24Speaker 05

Gary ain't been around to say white people in 40 years. He feels like he's back in court.

• 17:32Speaker 05

There's two of you. Can't stop laughing, man. I didn't want to do this podcast.

• 17:39Speaker 06

Oh my god. Now he's a member of Dipset and shit. Oh my god, dude.

• 17:43Speaker 05

  I'm dying here, guys.

• 18:08Speaker 06

Suck his dick. Yo, what happened to your hand, by the way?

• 18:10Speaker 03

  Ah, yeah, fucking...

• 18:12Speaker 06

  Pickleball?

• 18:14Speaker 06

  Hell yeah, Garrett.

• 18:16Speaker 03

  Paddle!

• 18:17Speaker 07

  No, that's funnier.

• 18:19Speaker 03

Pickleball, right? No, I played paddle. A lot of people confuse it. Yeah, yeah.

• 18:24Speaker 06

  I know, I know.

• 18:25Speaker 03

  Yeah, I know.

• 18:26Speaker 06

  I didn't whoop you, I spanked you.

• 18:31Speaker 03

  Different sport.

• 18:33Speaker 06

  Is it different?

• 18:33Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 18:34Speaker 06

  How?

• 18:35Speaker 03

Uh, well, it's basically, I love talking about this one, eh? I just wanted to let you know.

• 18:39Speaker 06

  Yeah, yeah.

• 18:39Speaker 03

So, pickleball is just like tennis, like you're standing on a ping pong table. Paddle's like squash and tennis put together, so there's like...

• 18:46Speaker 06

  I don't know what's squash.

• 18:46Speaker 03

It's basically, there's walls on all sides, and you can use the wall. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 18:51Speaker 06

  I don't know what's squash.

• 18:52Speaker 03

Squash, yeah, yeah. So there's walls on all sides, so you can use the walls, and there's like fence, and you can hit the ball off the walls. The ball's always in play.

• 18:59Speaker 06

  That's paddle? Where's the wall?

• 19:00Speaker 03

That wall's in the back, that like clear glass right there?

• 19:03Speaker 06

  Oh, it's glass?

• 19:03Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 19:05Speaker 06

  The scoring's the same?

• 19:06Speaker 03

  Say again?

• 19:06Speaker 06

  Scoring is the same?

• 19:08Speaker 03

I've never played pickleball, so I wouldn't know.

• 19:10Speaker 07

He said that like it was cool.

• 19:14Speaker 06

But what happened to your head? Is it okay?

• 19:15Speaker 03

No, I just scratched. I just scratched it. This is really, like, I wish there was something funnier about this story, but it's not.

• 19:21Speaker 06

  Damn.

• 19:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:23Speaker 07

I noticed you have a wedding ring on again.

• 19:24Speaker 06

Yeah, why would you get back on? Like, why would you do that again? It was really tumultuous, your divorce, that's the thing that I feel like we have any... Trying to keep some shit off the internet.

• 19:32Speaker 07

  You're, I mean...

• 19:32Speaker 06

  I know, I know. It's a giant diamond. Diamonds, it's down here.

• 19:41Speaker 03

Are you, how long have you been faithful to this girl?

• 19:43Speaker 05

  Shut up.

• 19:46Speaker 05

  Only once.

• 19:50Speaker 05

  Let's see, let's see.

• 19:51Speaker 07

  Why you're not answering?

• 19:52Speaker 03

How long have you been faithful?

• 19:54Speaker 05

  This is different.

• 19:56Speaker 05

  Different relationship.

• 19:57Speaker 03

  Nice.

• 19:57Speaker 05

That was a big reason for the original divorce, though. Like, we just stopped being intimate. Yeah, we stopped being intimate.

• 20:05Speaker 03

  You guys stopped having sex?

• 20:06Speaker 05

Oh, I think the last six years, three times.

• 20:10Speaker 03

  Whoa.

• 20:12Speaker 07

To be fair, only one of them stopped having sex.

• 20:13Speaker 05

When I was on your podcast, that was deep in the six.

• 20:16Speaker 03

That was deep in the six. God, but now let's, now just out of, because you brought this up, I didn't bring this up. Was that when you started, you know, kind of seeking other holes?

• 20:28Speaker 07

  Extramarital relationships?

• 20:29Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:30Speaker 05

I mean, it had a big part of it.

• 20:31Speaker 03

  Right, right, right, right.

• 20:32Speaker 05

You know what I mean? You're not sleeping with your wife.

• 20:35Speaker 03

Were you trying, though? Were you trying?

• 20:37Speaker 05

  No.

• 20:37Speaker 07

  That's true.

• 20:37Speaker 03

  You weren't even trying.

• 20:38Speaker 05

She wasn't either, though. Neither was. We went through COVID and just never touched.

• 20:42Speaker 07

  Oh, no.

• 20:44Speaker 05

We're watching Walking Dead and All American. That's, that was COVID. But you're still, I was watching All American like it was a real team.

• 20:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:52Speaker 05

I was like, yo, how's he gonna leave Beverly High for Compton?

• 20:55Speaker 03

I did this with Friday Night Lights. I remember that. Like, I actually cared about if they were gonna leave.

• 20:59Speaker 05

Yeah. So, I mean, that's really what it came down to.

• 21:02Speaker 07

Yeah, no, so that was COVID. This clip is from well before COVID, so I'm just curious on the timeline of all of it.

• 21:08Speaker 05

Yeah, I've been, we've been, what, it's been five years? So, it's been separated?

• 21:12Speaker 03

Gary, I feel like you're getting, you're getting back into the, the iced coffee moment. Like, you're slowly walking ourselves back in. I feel like you are. And we don't even wanna be there, but you are walking back into it. Because you have a beautiful new marriage right now. You have twins, right?

• 21:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 21:26Speaker 03

That's amazing. I'm sure that's exactly what you wanted.

• 21:32Speaker 05

  Down to 55.

• 21:40Speaker 05

Immediately after this. Is not working.

• 21:42Speaker 03

Bro, this divorce was so tragic, but also so, the way that you describe it, you came on Brilliant and you were breaking it down. Dude, I was fucking crying laughing. Do you remember?

• 21:51Speaker 05

  Some of the process server?

• 21:52Speaker 03

Oh my god, the process server. Can you just break down that story a little bit?

• 21:57Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 21:58Speaker 03

  If you feel comfortable.

• 21:59Speaker 05

No, no, no. It's in the past. Yeah, it's all cleared.

• 22:01Speaker 03

  This, okay, go.

• 22:02Speaker 05

  So the process server.

• 22:04Speaker 03

Can you break down the process server to the lights?

• 22:06Speaker 05

When you file for divorce, you wanna, this happens a lot when you want, when you got houses in two different states. So we had a house in Ohio and a house in California. So I filed for divorce in Ohio. Reason being, obviously financially, usually it's better in Ohio, but we were registered voters in Ohio. We paid taxes in Ohio.

• 22:30Speaker 03

But the real reason is because if you divorce in California, you're fucked.

• 22:34Speaker 05

That too, but we can't file in California because if it goes down, then they're gonna come after us for tax evasion and voter fraud. So I, I didn't do it out of just California. I was like, no, we are registered voters. Before we built the house in California, I asked my accountant, I go, I don't want to pay California taxes. How, can I get a house in California? He goes, long you spend less than half the year there. I'm on the road every year. So I'm on the road half the year. I was like, no problem. And you gotta keep a residency somewhere else.

• 23:05Speaker 03

  Boom, Ohio.

• 23:05Speaker 05

So even if you looked, it was funny, if you looked at our neighborhood in California, all the license plates was Nevada, Arizona, none of them were California. Everybody was doing the same shit, right? So that's really why I filed in Ohio. And then as soon as, I tried to do the somewhat respectable thing. I said, hey, I'm not happy. I want a divorce. And I said, so if there's a knock on the door. Just so you know, it's probably a process server. You said that to her. Yeah, yeah. But she was also trying to serve your ass. That's when, that's when she's like, she went left. I was like, oh, this ain't gonna be good, cuz I heard the door knocking. The guy was knocking and she wouldn't answer. I go, I think the door's knocking. She goes, nah, it's probably Amazon. I go, fuck. Oh, wow. She knows, like, she's, she's about to do something.

• 23:49Speaker 05

And so she didn't answer the door. And then like two days later, the TMZ shit came out where she filed in LA against me. And now I was like, wait, we don't live in LA. We live in the Bay. And so that started off a like three month cat and mouse game of avoiding a process server. I went to my boy's house in West Virginia. I was off the grid. I wasn't using credit cards, cash. Like, they're not gonna find me at this dude's house. Like, it was damn near deliverance. I mean, it was, it was. You were hiding at the comedy clubs? Comedy clubs, I was, I was staying in hotels. I'd be under Mohammed Shabazz.

• 24:27Speaker 05

I went, cuz I'm ordering bacon for breakfast.

• 24:32Speaker 05

Literally, the groom service guy's like, I thought it was a Muslim.

• 24:36Speaker 05

I don't need that turkey shit.

• 24:39Speaker 05

So I was at, I remember I was at the Four Seasons in Baltimore for two weeks. I never left my room. And then I would go to the shows and then, uh, they'd have, they'd pick me up like underneath the, uh, the hotel. And it was like, we, we'd drive over and my opener was at the other, this other hotel under my name. So we was hoping to like mislead him, you know? And then, uh, uh, let me see. They almost got me in Colorado Springs. So I had my normal opener and he's a bulldog. But he didn't go with me and I said, I got a bad feeling about next week, man, you're not with me. And we weren't in Colorado Springs five minutes. I'm crossing the road, I'm getting to the club like two hours early.

• 25:23Speaker 05

And this guy goes, hey, Gary. And I looked and I saw him pulling the paper out of his back and I, motherfucker, I turned into Ricky from Boys.

• 25:34Speaker 05

And he started chasing me and he threw the uh Cause if it touches you, it's on, right? Yeah, he threw it, then hit me, right? And one of my guys, I had two guys with me and they both got fired after this weekend. Cause I told my sister, your one job is to not let them come. He, the dude walked right between them, just right between, they looked with it. I go, motherfucker, I don't want you to fight nobody, but stop him. And then the one guy started looking at the paper and I go, don't fucking touch that. Cause if they touch it, I could be served. Yeah. So I'm, then I go in the dressing room and now I'm turning into Cuba Gooding. Yeah, he's swinging on air.

• 26:12Speaker 05

You know what this money's gonna cost me? And it did, it was, it was, it was six figures, I'm not gonna say how much, for jurisdiction. Just going to court, now I had to hire a lawyer in California to fight it, fight jurisdiction. That was just, it was just a big waste of time. But ultimately. We got in Ohio. And we settled. We got her.

• 26:34Speaker 05

Oh yeah, we got her at a Panera Bread. I go, what happened? I go, we got her.

• 26:39Speaker 05

Panera Bread in Antioch, California. And it was crazy how it happened, like I had hired a process server and I said 24/7 surveillance on the house. And they just said, she doesn't come out, she's, she's just, she's not leaving. I go, I got a feeling this, this service company ain't got 24/7 on the house. Then they hit me with like a huge bill and I go, well, I'm not gonna pay until you get her served. I hired a process server out of Cincinnati, me and her flew into town and we had her within an hour. Wow. Like we flew from Cincinnati to Sacramento, cause they said, don't fly into Oakland or San Fran. Cause if somebody sees you, they could tip her off here in town. Yeah. We flew into Sacramento, got to rent a car, we were driving through my neighborhood and I, right before we get in my neighborhood, there was a grocery store.

• 27:23Speaker 05

I looked to my left, I swear to God, I saw our SUV, I was like, that looks like ours. And then. We went to the house. She wasn't there. I still had the garage door opener. So the garage came up and the car wasn't there. I go, let's go back to the grocery store. It was her. She was pulling out. We followed her for about 15 miles on the highway. And she pulled into a Panera Bread and she went through the drive street. She got stuck. And that's where we got her.

• 27:46Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 27:46Speaker 05

The lady came out and I had to get on the other side and film it. The video. So she never saw me. She was so focused on the driver's side. I'm right there. Like filming the whole thing. And then I got back in the car. I was like, we forgot her. We freaking got her. And then she goes, you gotta get out of here. Cause you, you can get, still get served today. So I had to immediately go to the Oakland airport and I just walked in. I'm literally walking down Southwest had a flight. I was like, I just was walking. I would, I would have been on Spirit that day.

• 28:16Speaker 05

Just walking down. Anybody got a flight out? I didn't care where we went. I had to get out of California.

• 28:20Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 28:21Speaker 05

Southwest had a flight and just got on dipped out.

• 28:23Speaker 06

  And now things are okay.

• 28:25Speaker 05

  What do you mean?

• 28:25Speaker 06

Like between you two, is that you're, you're fully divorced?

• 28:28Speaker 05

Oh yeah. We, that's been over like two and a half, three years.

• 28:31Speaker 06

  Talking at all?

• 28:32Speaker 05

  Not like that.

• 28:33Speaker 06

  No.

• 28:34Speaker 05

No, no, no. But my son's talking to me.

• 28:36Speaker 06

Yeah. I was hesitant to ask because I know that was.

• 28:39Speaker 05

No, no, he's, he's good now.

• 28:41Speaker 06

  Oh, good.

• 28:41Speaker 05

He's been out to see the twins.

• 28:43Speaker 06

  No way.

• 28:44Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 28:44Speaker 06

Oh, okay. That makes me happy.

• 28:45Speaker 05

Good. Yeah. He's, he's doing good.

• 28:47Speaker 06

Was that stressful when you were following her on the highway? Were you nervous?

• 28:51Speaker 05

No, here's what's funny. So I'm, the process of her was driving and she goes, you gotta get in the backseat. She might see you. It was, it was, it was freaking, this lady was a bulldog. So now I'm in the back. I don't think you see me. She goes, get down. Get down, right? So I don't know where we're at. I'm just looking up. She goes, she goes, I think she sees us. I think she sees us. I go, she ain't, she ain't looking in the back for this Nissan Rogue.

• 29:18Speaker 05

So that's when we went there, we, we came to stop. She goes, all right, I need you to get up, get your phone out. And then that's, I didn't even know where we was at. I just got up and I was like, oh, we're at Panera. And boom.

• 29:29Speaker 06

You didn't do it laying down. No disguise or anything? I would have done like a mustache or something, right?

• 29:34Speaker 05

No, if she, that was too much. You gotta.

• 29:40Speaker 05

It's funny, when you go through this for four months, though, you're always looking like, how is this gonna end? Cause I remember I was in West Virginia, I'd be walking around like, how does this end? Did they get me? Do I get her? And then it was funny, cause I'm in West Virginia for a couple of weeks at one point. And I just was having like Stockholm syndrome, I gotta do something. So I went through Orange Theory. In, in like Huntington, West Virginia, Orange Theory. I was, I was in the best shape. I'll put it like that.

• 30:11Speaker 05

I just remember the lady saw my ID and then she, I'm trying to keep a low profile. I'm thinking I'm good at this Orange Theory. The whole time she goes, you don't work out like this in California. California, I like that. I was like, why the fuck are you keep saying my name?

• 30:30Speaker 05

She was like Olivia Newton John, mixed with John Travolta.

• 30:35Speaker 05

Real rough. I'm sure she didn't have a boyfriend.

• 30:39Speaker 06

The way you describe it almost sounds fun. I'll be honest, like.

• 30:43Speaker 05

  Like a process server?

• 30:44Speaker 06

Yeah, like I kinda wanna do this with my girl. Yeah.

• 30:46Speaker 05

  It was an adventure.

• 30:47Speaker 06

It sounds like a Mr. Beast video. Remember, get served first, loses.

• 30:51Speaker 05

It is wild, though, like, and, and I will say, like, it was very like a male bonding experience. Cause every guy that had been through a divorce reached out, like in my business. Anthony Anderson reached out, Kevin reached out, Shaq reached out. I feel like I'm name dropping, but they had all been through messy divorces. And one of them said, I don't know if it was Shaq or Anthony, cause you know, you, when you go through it, you're, you're thinking, I'm about to be broke. Can you hear all these horror stories? I'm gonna be working the rest of my life for somebody else. And then one of them said, um, they said, look, if you get a chance to settle, settle. Your talent won't allow you to go broke. And I was like, it was very profound. I was like, oh, then I was really ready to settle at that point.

• 31:36Speaker 06

But I also understand that feeling, like you, you worked her ass off.

• 31:38Speaker 03

For almost thirty years, you've made a bunch of money. And now you're faced with this dilemma. You're like, I might have to pay all this money to an ex-wife. And there goes my security blanket. Now I'm back hustling. Now I have to do this because I gotta pay bills, not because I want to do it. That changes everything.

• 31:53Speaker 07

Comedy is what, fifteen years before you start making money? Ten, twelve, whatever?

• 31:56Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 31:57Speaker 07

  You're broke before that.

• 31:58Speaker 03

Also, alimony, like, imagine you're paying something off the top. You're paying thirty percent, whatever it is, before taxes.

• 32:04Speaker 05

Oh, yeah. Oh, we had some other stuff I didn't, I didn't find out about till later, too.

• 32:07Speaker 07

  Wow.

• 32:08Speaker 05

  The IRS was coming, baby.

• 32:10Speaker 07

  Oh, no.

• 32:11Speaker 05

  I had no idea.

• 32:12Speaker 03

  For her, for her?

• 32:13Speaker 05

  For, we're married.

• 32:15Speaker 07

  Oh.

• 32:15Speaker 05

Joint. I was like, oh, I didn't know this was happening. That's what scared me more than anything.

• 32:21Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 32:21Speaker 05

I was like, whoa, I gotta work for the IRS and her?

• 32:24Speaker 03

Were women upset at you during this whole thing because it was public? And I imagine a lot of them had went through similar things.

• 32:31Speaker 05

Nah, I think, I think internet women, but real life women.

• 32:34Speaker 03

So at the shows, they were sympathetic to you?

• 32:37Speaker 05

Best thing I ever heard was, I had gone like a week and a half, two weeks, I'm just reading the internet, I'm holed up at that Four Seasons in Baltimore.

• 32:44Speaker 03

  Terrifying.

• 32:45Speaker 05

My first show out the box, I'm on stage about forty-five minutes in and lady in the back goes, I love you little cheating ass.

• 32:54Speaker 05

Man, I'm glad I didn't hear that. That was the only time I was nervous walking on stage in probably about fifteen, twenty years.

• 33:01Speaker 03

  What do you mean?

• 33:01Speaker 05

I didn't know how they were gonna react to me.

• 33:03Speaker 03

Yeah, you, you thought the internet was real.

• 33:05Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:05Speaker 03

So you were gonna walk on stage.

• 33:06Speaker 05

So I'm thinking like, or you're gonna see the dudes sympathetic and the women are like, no. It was, I was like, oh, the internet is not real.

• 33:15Speaker 07

Why, why do you think that was?

• 33:17Speaker 05

Just cause you're, you're literally by yourself and you don't know who to trust. Like, you're getting, you're, she's finding shit out. I'm like, how is she finding this out?

• 33:26Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah.

• 33:27Speaker 05

There was some shit she found out that only two or three people knew.

• 33:31Speaker 07

  You got a mole, bro.

• 33:32Speaker 05

Yeah, I found all of them out.

• 33:34Speaker 07

  No, for real?

• 33:34Speaker 05

  Yeah, one of my openers.

• 33:36Speaker 03

  Was telling her shit?

• 33:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:37Speaker 07

Get the fuck out of here.

• 33:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:39Speaker 07

  That's crazy.

• 33:40Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:41Speaker 03

Yeah. How did he, how did she?

• 33:43Speaker 05

  I had already fired him.

• 33:46Speaker 03

And then he was like, okay.

• 33:49Speaker 05

So after the divorce came out, then they got in touch and he started giving her like all this shit.

• 33:54Speaker 03

Was she paying him to do it or he was just doing it off the strength of I hate you?

• 33:57Speaker 05

Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. But you can find him at a coffee shop.

• 34:03Speaker 05

You know what I mean? Like, I still follow him, just like.

• 34:06Speaker 03

Just to see where his life is.

• 34:08Speaker 05

  Yeah. How's that?

• 34:09Speaker 03

  Damn.

• 34:09Speaker 05

How's that Gregory's coffee at 3pm on a Sunday brunch show? Bitch. Well, it's good to know you're not vindictive.

• 34:18Speaker 03

I love it. I love it. You should like those posts.

• 34:26Speaker 06

You said in a special that after it got out to TMZ that the DMs were crazy.

• 34:31Speaker 05

Yeah, that was, yeah, that was a little nuts.

• 34:33Speaker 03

Wait, girls were sliding in DMs?

• 34:35Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 34:35Speaker 03

Once they knew that you were single?

• 34:37Speaker 05

Well, I don't know. I guess. They were, it was a lot of people shooting their shot. And it was all over the place. It was ugly, pretty.

• 34:43Speaker 03

But did you have some fun once you got single? Like now you're married, you're obviously a good faithful husband.

• 34:48Speaker 05

I was having fun when I was married.

• 34:53Speaker 03

His throat's clear now. It was, it was very compartmentalized. The road was the road and home was home. Bro, it's so funny. Bro, the way that you would do it was just so funny, bro. I remember once we did a pod, you remember back in the day?

• 35:07Speaker 05

I know where you're going with this.

• 35:08Speaker 03

You know, this is, this, this was so, this is when I found out Gary is not a white guy at all.

• 35:15Speaker 03

Because we did this pod, he was telling me about his whole life. It was beautiful. It was inside jokes. So we were doing it, but it was a one-on-one, really.

• 35:21Speaker 05

  Yeah, with that restaurant.

• 35:22Speaker 03

Yeah, Gilas, Gilas. And it was, it was awesome. And then I was like, you want to go grab a drink? He's like, yeah, sure. Let's go grab a drink. I think, did you come as well? Yeah, I think we went to go grab a drink. And then Gary pulled up with a fine ass chick out of nowhere. But didn't even DM her, didn't even message me, yo, by the way, keep this low. So now I'm sitting down like, is this his assistant? Like, who is this fine ass girl? She's like touching his shoulder. I'm like, Gary, what the fuck did you just? You made me a liar. Why are you gonna make me fake? You can lie, but don't make me lie.

• 35:51Speaker 05

  Here comes the sweat.

• 35:55Speaker 03

Bro, like no heads up, nothing. Like I'm supposed to, like we all cheaters.

• 36:01Speaker 05

Bro, I should have gave you a heads up.

• 36:02Speaker 03

  Not even a text message.

• 36:04Speaker 05

  Oh, man.

• 36:04Speaker 03

  She's doing good now.

• 36:07Speaker 03

That was his assistant. Ass assistant.

• 36:10Speaker 06

  Yeah, it's funny.

• 36:11Speaker 05

Yeah, she's like, "Went bad, she's doing the weather in Detroit."

• 36:18Speaker 05

I remember that too, I was like, "Well..."

• 36:20Speaker 03

Was there any part where you was like, "I should probably just let Schultz know I'm a piece of shit"?

• 36:25Speaker 05

No party at all, it was, "No, fuck it." You're at that place where you, I've heard it and I didn't believe it, you almost want to get caught. You're just like, "Fucking, let's just end this."

• 36:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:39Speaker 05

So you get a little reckless towards the end, and you know, that was, I think that was like 2019?

• 36:44Speaker 03

  That was early, yeah.

• 36:45Speaker 05

  So...

• 36:45Speaker 03

I don't want to date it.

• 36:47Speaker 05

Well, the shit, the shit hit the fan in 2021 for me, early, so... I, I never believed it, but I, but I look at my behavior and I was like, "Yeah, I wanted to get caught." I was, I was, I wasn't like PDA and I wasn't out there at parties bringing people, but I was like, I wasn't hiding it either.

• 37:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:05Speaker 05

So it was almost like, yeah.

• 37:07Speaker 06

I'm also curious, is there like an, like a, like an OG comic thing? I feel like comics that were on the road in like 80s, 90s, because it was before social media, there was a little bit of a...

• 37:16Speaker 05

  Crazy.

• 37:16Speaker 06

A dual life that a lot of comics would do that you can't really do now.

• 37:19Speaker 05

  I don't think it's just comics, I think it's entertainers.

• 37:22Speaker 06

Yeah, I think that's probably fair.

• 37:23Speaker 05

  Period. Rap pack?

• 37:24Speaker 03

Jesus. But specifically like comedians are on the road every single weekend. So you have a life on the road and then you got a life at home. And I think a lot of these guys before camera phones, before the internet, you know, before social media, you can kind of do whatever you wanted.

• 37:37Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 37:38Speaker 03

And there was girls in every city and you would go back to those cities and those girls were still there.

• 37:42Speaker 05

  Hmm, yeah.

• 37:42Speaker 03

So, yeah, you could see how that would definitely happen, especially if like things at home weren't great.

• 37:47Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 37:48Speaker 05

Comedians, man, you know, you get on the road in the beginning and you're getting attention, you're tapped in socially, and you've never had that before. It's like, "Oh, I don't even have to talk to girls, they're talking to me."

• 38:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:00Speaker 05

  You know?

• 38:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:01Speaker 05

So it's, it's a... Why do you think that's not happening now? I think it's still probably going on.

• 38:06Speaker 03

It's just, it's just easier to get caught up.

• 38:09Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 38:09Speaker 03

A girl posts on social media, she's with you, you know, she's tagging you in a picture. Your girl's going, who the fuck is this bitch tagging you in a picture?

• 38:17Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 38:18Speaker 07

I think also part of it, I think that's mainly it, but a smaller part, a lot of times now comedians are making more money before they get on the road. Whereas before, that's all you had, so you had to only take you. Now you can afford to take your boys. So you're kind of just hanging out and you're not as inclined to go out and chase the night. Where it's like, well, I'm with my homies, so I don't have to. Otherwise, it's just you in some random fucking city in Toledo or wherever. And it's like, what am I gonna do? I'm just here alone?

• 38:42Speaker 03

Yeah, fact. What do you think happens to Shannon, man? Have you spoken to him since? Are you guys close?

• 38:47Speaker 05

Mm-mm. And we're cool, but not. It's just, it's so weird. Like, they know he's coming back in September?

• 38:53Speaker 03

Bro, I was shocked at how many people like immediately came out.

• 38:57Speaker 05

  And shit on him?

• 38:57Speaker 03

And shit on, and kind of like, like, what do you think that's about? I'm trying to wrap my head around that, because usually when there's an accusation from an OnlyFans girl, it's like, oh, this is some fake shit, she just wants some money. But with Shannon, the immediate response from like big media figures was, "Hey, what the hell are you doing? You're fucked up. Why are you doing this?"

• 39:18Speaker 05

I don't, listen, I'm the last person to comment on someone's personal life.

• 39:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, but also the best.

• 39:25Speaker 05

Yeah, I don't want to be the hypocrite.

• 39:27Speaker 03

  No, you're not.

• 39:28Speaker 07

Why do you think, how about the, why do you think he's not getting more support?

• 39:31Speaker 03

  That's what, I'm wondering why.

• 39:33Speaker 05

Think about it, think about it, it's very similar to stand-up, like, why do the guys that sell the most tickets, people, like, they shit on, like, as many people shit on Kevin?

• 39:42Speaker 07

  Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 39:43Speaker 05

And if you know Kevin, he's like, literally one of the nicest guys on the planet?

• 39:46Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 39:47Speaker 05

And you guys just shit on him, you're going, why is that?

• 39:50Speaker 03

That's because humans just, we have an issue with.

• 39:52Speaker 05

They're top, and you kind of want that spot.

• 39:54Speaker 03

So Shannon was viewed as, but then there's people like, I saw Stephen A. Smith kind of talking shit. And Stephen A. Smith is at the top.

• 40:03Speaker 05

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 40:04Speaker 03

  Did you see that?

• 40:04Speaker 05

But I think he wants to be the top top.

• 40:06Speaker 03

But he, so he don't want even anybody second or third?

• 40:09Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 40:10Speaker 03

  That's, that's hate. That's hating then, because

• 40:14Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 40:15Speaker 03

If there's, there is a human instinct, there's like jealousy and competitiveness, right? And sometimes it clouds our judgment, and we see it happen a lot, you know, like you said, people hating on Kevin when he's literally like the nicest, most supportive guy.

• 40:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 40:25Speaker 03

But if you're above somebody and hating on someone and like being super critical of somebody below you when they're not even convicted, that feels like hate right there. Like, why are you even worried about what's happening?

• 40:36Speaker 06

But Shannon's pod was more successful, so maybe he's like looking at him as.

• 40:39Speaker 05

But it's also clicks. It's also like you talk about Shannon, you're gonna like definitely clip it up. You're gonna get numbers. Especially in that, John, like, you know, Stephen A. wants to comment on, you know, I don't know, the Pope dying is not gonna get the numbers of Shannon Sharp's scandal.

• 41:00Speaker 07

Do you think part of it is he's angling for president and he's gotta?

• 41:03Speaker 05

  Stephen A. Smith?

• 41:04Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 41:05Speaker 05

He's not getting the president. No, he wants to run.

• 41:07Speaker 07

He wants to run. So if you wanna run, you gotta morally be like, how could you?

• 41:12Speaker 03

I also think that like Shannon's show was.

• 41:14Speaker 06

You need a clean record to run nowadays.

• 41:16Speaker 03

Yeah. But I also think like Shannon's show by design was like very clicky and like in a lot of ways toxic.

• 41:26Speaker 07

  Shannon?

• 41:27Speaker 03

Yeah, Shannon's show, like you did the show.

• 41:28Speaker 05

It was crazy how the show was sports based, but the comedians get the biggest numbers.

• 41:33Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, cuz comedians out here talking shit.

• 41:35Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 41:36Speaker 03

But like, like I even remember when I was doing it and I love Shannon, like the team was brilliant, the way they put it together, it was like really brilliant. There's this guy CJ is producing it, they're like, they're fucking smart, but like there were moments where like they stopped the interview and then CJ would hand him a card with questions that were gonna be clickable videos and be here, just ask him these questions. Shannon's reading the question, he don't even know who he's talking about. So it's like the show is designed to be clipped up and put on social media for those type of like more, let's call them.

• 42:06Speaker 06

  Messy.

• 42:07Speaker 03

  Messy, messy clips.

• 42:08Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 42:09Speaker 03

So I wonder if like you're promoting messiness, when you're messy, people are less inclined to defend you. Does that make sense?

• 42:18Speaker 05

Yeah, I know what you're saying, kinda like Jerry Springer.

• 42:20Speaker 03

Yeah, he's like, yo, if Jerry did some fuck shit, people are like, yo.

• 42:24Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 42:25Speaker 03

Why do we feel so bad for you? You made a lot of money on people's fuck shit.

• 42:27Speaker 05

Yeah, Jerry wrote that, he wrote the check to the hooker.

• 42:31Speaker 07

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, when he was like mayor of Cincinnati.

• 42:34Speaker 03

  Yeah, Cincinnati, right?

• 42:35Speaker 05

Yeah, when I was growing up, everything we went, it was Jerry Springer everywhere. When I grew up in Cincinnati, Jerry Springer was our mayor and George Clooney's dad was Channel 9 News, he was the newscaster, 6 o'clock news. So I was like this, dude, who knew? Oh no. And then Carmen Electra was the big booty chick. No, Carmen Electra was the big booty chick with the bad teeth. They used to dance at this place called Caddy's on Sunday, a teenage nightclub. Prince came in town.

• 43:06Speaker 03

  Scooped it.

• 43:06Speaker 05

She was gone. And then like six months later, she's in a Prince video and her teeth were fixed.

• 43:11Speaker 03

I go, oh shit. She had her teeth fixed.

• 43:14Speaker 05

  Everybody knew her.

• 43:15Speaker 03

Do you have your real teeth?

• 43:17Speaker 05

These are, yeah, these aren't the first two.

• 43:19Speaker 03

  But the rest are?

• 43:20Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 43:20Speaker 03

  Everybody got veneers now, huh?

• 43:22Speaker 05

This, well, this got knocked out in fifth grade.

• 43:24Speaker 03

  Oh no.

• 43:25Speaker 05

  So this is fake.

• 43:26Speaker 03

  Damn, what happened?

• 43:27Speaker 05

Last day of school. Extra recess. You were cheating on your girlfriend.

• 43:37Speaker 05

We ain't got enough equity in this relationship, bro.

• 43:45Speaker 05

I'll tell you what, it didn't hold open the right.

• 43:50Speaker 05

I'm gonna be serving chai soon.

• 43:54Speaker 05

I'm gonna be in that mush hour.

• 43:57Speaker 05

No, they said, if we got extra recess last day of school, I went hauling ass like, yeah. You know those doors, the gym doors? I didn't know it was locked.

• 44:05Speaker 03

  No.

• 44:06Speaker 05

Yeah, click. And I had buff teeth. They was like this. You know, I did, I did a joke, like, I went, I used to go to Catholic church and the priest never messed with me. And then I found he was messing with all the little boys. And I was like, they ain't never fucking me once.

• 44:20Speaker 05

I'm not letting that mouth hit my shit.

• 44:23Speaker 03

But once he lost his teeth, then it was like, that was an open goal.

• 44:29Speaker 05

  That's too fluent.

• 44:30Speaker 03

Get back to the show. Could you tell the story about when you were filming your special and Floyd showed up?

• 44:35Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah, yeah. That was.

• 44:37Speaker 03

  This is crazy.

• 44:38Speaker 05

  It's 2011.

• 44:39Speaker 03

This is your first big showtime?

• 44:42Speaker 05

Yeah, this is the one. This is the one you've been working on. I was like, all right, this, this should do well.

• 44:46Speaker 03

So let me, let me set this up a little bit. You're already percolating, you're getting a lot of attention, you have the.

• 44:51Speaker 05

Take Like A Man, we just got done filming it.

• 44:53Speaker 03

So Take Like A Man, but it's not out yet, but even before that, you had some like big appearances. Was it Def Comedy Champ? No?

• 44:59Speaker 05

Well, the Mike Epps Live from the Nokia.

• 45:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 45:02Speaker 05

Kinda. Kind of got a little buzz going again about.

• 45:06Speaker 03

But you had some real buzz. You had this opportunity to do a special with Showtime, right? And this is at the time where like you either, it was HBO or Showtime.

• 45:13Speaker 05

This was also a time where Code Black came out of nowhere and then the Shaq All-Star Comedy Jam kind of blew Kevin up. That's, yeah, yeah, yeah. So Code Black. The hotspot. And it was, it was a time where Def Jam was gone, Comic View was gone. There was a lull. The internet wasn't what it is now. So there was, people were like, where do we find stand-up? So the Shaq show comes in. The Shaq shit blew Kevin out the water, basically, right? And even though Cedric was on it, D-Ray was on it, Aries Spear was on it, but Kev was the one that really benefited the most off that. Yeah. And so I was like, I remember I opened up for Mike in Houston. Epsy? Mike Epps in Houston. And he goes, after the show, they go, hey, we're filming this

• 45:57Speaker 05

thing Friday. This is like Saturday. Can you come in? And I go, what is it? And they go, we're doing this DVD. It's gonna be released and all the, all the Best Buys and all that stuff. And I go, alright. And I go, well, how much? And he was like, well, it's $2,500. That's it. There's no back end. There's no hotel. There's no flight. Wow. I was in Columbia, South Carolina. I canceled it. And all they said was, is Jeff Clang gonna be there? Cause he was running Code Black. He now, I think he runs Kevin's shit now. Oh, wow. Oh, wow. So I was like, is he gonna be there? And they go, if you promise me he watches my set. I'm in. I'm in. They go, we got you. I get there. They get there on a Friday. People don't know, there was 10 acts. They only aired like five of them. Oh, wow.

• 46:42Speaker 05

Five got cut. And so we're backstage and everybody's like arguing over who's gonna go last. And I go, I'll go last. And I remember I looked, I go, I'll last. I knew. That's a great. I knew I had, and I never did the black church joke yet, which kind of like the black and white church. I go, this, I've been doing it at clubs, but it hasn't been aired. It was like bringing the house down. Like one of my strongest probably jokes ever. In your pocket right there. And the Tiger Woods shit just happened. Where his wife be?

• 47:12Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 47:13Speaker 05

I had a fucking strong tiger. I said, if nothing else, they only want me to do 10, 15 minutes. I think I ended up doing 20 because I went last. I knew I had like eight that was just gonna bring the roof down in the beginning and end.

• 47:26Speaker 03

So you could package it, boom.

• 47:28Speaker 05

  So I walk on stage.

• 47:29Speaker 07

And you're kind of refreshing because you're probably the only, like you said, probably the only white guy there.

• 47:32Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 47:33Speaker 07

So they've been seeing black dude, black, and then this white dude pops up and you're kind of waking back up like, oh shit.

• 47:38Speaker 05

  It wasn't just that.

• 47:39Speaker 07

  Just different.

• 47:39Speaker 05

It was, it was, it was nine comics doing dick pussy jokes.

• 47:42Speaker 07

  Ah, damn.

• 47:43Speaker 05

And then I came out like, hey, church, you know? And what, what set the whole set off was Morris Chestnut was in the front row. So I walked out, I see Morris Chestnut and I go, hey, I go, oh, literally, I go, Morris. And I go, hey, you guys ever watch Boys in the Hood and think Ricky's gonna live? And I started even saying, I said, I get so mad at you. Every time I watch it, I go, you die every time. Just like, stop eating the Twinkie, bro. Fuck off.

• 48:12Speaker 05

You passed the test. You're going to the army.

• 48:15Speaker 03

So resets the whole room. You're live in the moment.

• 48:18Speaker 05

  Right there, the room.

• 48:19Speaker 03

  Right, right, right, right.

• 48:19Speaker 05

And so Clanigan saw me and then they sent me to Japan first. He wasn't familiar. So the shack was doing the tour.

• 48:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:27Speaker 05

So they was like, yo, they want to send you to Japan first to do a show. And I go, so I went to Japan. I think it was me, Mark Curry, Lunel, a couple other people.

• 48:36Speaker 03

Mark Curry, man. Dude, Mark Curry was so fucking funny.

• 48:38Speaker 05

Oh, he's so good. And then I guess the word got back. No, he's, he's solid. He's got it because they only saw 20 minutes.

• 48:44Speaker 03

  Yeah, of course. Yeah, yeah.

• 48:45Speaker 05

So then they, they put me on the, that shack tour of 2011. And then they said, we're gonna give you a special. We gotta deal with Showtime.

• 48:53Speaker 03

Okay, on the shack tour, who is, who is your group that's going?

• 48:57Speaker 05

It was, um, D-Ray, uh, Michael Blackson, Corey Holcomb, me and Capone.

• 49:05Speaker 03

I mean, Josh, killer. Where, where are you going up in the show?

• 49:09Speaker 05

Right for Corey. Corey closed it. D-Ray hosted.

• 49:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:13Speaker 05

And then Michael Blackson and Capone flip flopped.

• 49:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:16Speaker 05

Half the tour, one would go first, one would go second, and then, then I would go fourth and then Corey, Corey would close it.

• 49:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:23Speaker 05

  So that was

• 49:24Speaker 03

  Great show.

• 49:25Speaker 05

Yeah, it was. It was a solid show. And all of us kinda did our own thing after it ended. And then, um, uh, so they gave me the special. So I'm in Vegas. I mean, we stopped filming Think Like a Man like two weeks before I'm filming this. It's at the Mandalay Bay. And I just remember I'm on stage. It's sold out, but there's literally in the front. Two empty rows and I'm going, why aren't they filling this?

• 49:49Speaker 03

Keep in mind, this is a theater. So rows are 20, that's 10, 20 seats.

• 49:54Speaker 05

Easy, easy Mandalay Bay, the big theater there? Why is this is so weird? Why aren't they filling this in? I don't know. Floyd has called and said, I'm coming. I don't care if there's a special. The Floyd shows up Floyd's the champ at this point.

• 50:07Speaker 03

  He runs Vegas.

• 50:08Speaker 05

  He runs Vegas.

• 50:09Speaker 03

He's bringing a billion dollars every single time he does a fight.

• 50:11Speaker 05

I'm on stage and I see, I'm 30, 40 minutes in. And a commotion happens. It's like, there's like all these people just, I thought a fight happened. Like, what's going on? And then it starts coming towards me and I'm going, what the fuck is happening? You know Floyd's a little guy.

• 50:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:26Speaker 05

He's had been all these big bodyguards. And I'm going, what's going on? And then I see Floyd, oh Floyd. And I just started talking to him and his entourage. For about 15 minutes and then they, they kept like five of it in the special.

• 50:39Speaker 03

That's great. That's all he needs. That's great.

• 50:41Speaker 05

Completely in the middle of it. I'm like, all right. But it worked out.

• 50:45Speaker 03

A lot of people who haven't taped something don't know, like when you're taping anything, it could be a 10 minute set. It could be an hour set. Like you're kind of in like, um, performance mode, right? It's hard to stay.

• 50:54Speaker 05

  On autopilot.

• 50:55Speaker 03

You're on autopilot, right? Basically, I need to make sure I get these jokes right. And every time you do a joke, it doesn't go as good as it did in fucking Portland. You're like thinking about it and editing in your head.

• 51:03Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:04Speaker 03

And then 20 people walk in 40 minutes into your first.

• 51:07Speaker 05

  Forty people walk in.

• 51:10Speaker 03

To stay in the moment is one, very ballsy, but like, that's a really, a lot of people just ignore it.

• 51:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 51:17Speaker 03

And try to muscle through. Like, that's a courageous thing to do, but you do it because you got chops. That's the thing. Like you've done a lot of shows where people are walking in in the middle.

• 51:26Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:26Speaker 03

You know what I mean? Like if you go in that shack tour, if you went up first or second slot, people are still walking in.

• 51:31Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, yeah. True, true, true.

• 51:33Speaker 03

  You know what I'm saying?

• 51:34Speaker 05

And that's the first time I met Floyd. That's the crazy part.

• 51:36Speaker 03

Oh, I thought that he told you he was coming.

• 51:38Speaker 05

No, I didn't. They, they told me he's coming, but I didn't tell him he's gonna come in the middle of my set. The, the promoters are like, yo, well, we got the call Floyd's coming.

• 51:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:48Speaker 05

I was like, oh, there it is. Look at all them people. Did you see it? Metal is special.

• 51:56Speaker 05

They just take, they took over.

• 51:57Speaker 07

I mean, yeah, that's like a nightmare scenario.

• 51:59Speaker 05

  Look at that kid.

• 52:00Speaker 07

  Nightmare.

• 52:02Speaker 05

And they're all in the front.

• 52:04Speaker 06

It's, it is a nightmare, but it's also an amazing look.

• 52:06Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, to have Floyd Mayweather co-sign you during your special.

• 52:10Speaker 06

If you're watching this at home and you're like, oh, who's this Gary Owens guy, you know? And then all of a sudden they see Floyd walk in and sit down, you're like, oh shit.

• 52:16Speaker 07

Why'd you throw the S on there?

• 52:18Speaker 06

Because that's what they're thinking. That's what they're thinking. But then just have Floyd sit down and start laughing, like, I mean, that's amazing.

• 52:25Speaker 05

People don't know, right on the other side, Winky Wright was there.

• 52:28Speaker 07

  Oh.

• 52:29Speaker 05

So then Winky was there and then Floyd came in too.

• 52:32Speaker 06

In the moment, did you know, oh, this is gonna play amazing or were you a little?

• 52:35Speaker 05

No, I was just kinda going with it.

• 52:37Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 52:37Speaker 05

  You're just kinda winging it.

• 52:38Speaker 03

Were you roasting him at all?

• 52:40Speaker 05

Uh, I just, I told him about the Grand Rapids, I said, I appreciate you bringing all the Grand Rapids.

• 52:46Speaker 05

Oh my God, I said, if you in Grand Rapids right now, commit some crimes.

• 52:51Speaker 05

There's no store owners, no police officers.

• 52:54Speaker 03

Does he have a good sense of humor?

• 52:55Speaker 05

Yeah. Here's a cool thing about Floyd, I'll tell you this. He, if I'm in Vegas and he's in town, there's no phone calls made, he always comes and he buys tickets as far as I know. I don't get the phone calls saying Floyd's coming, can you leave tickets?

• 53:08Speaker 07

  Wow.

• 53:08Speaker 05

He's there, or I, I know for a fact when I did SLS, he bought them. Because I was on a door deal and we put the show together on like three weeks' notice and it was not sold out.

• 53:22Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 53:23Speaker 05

So when I got the ticket counts, I go, we had a hell of a walk up. And then I was like, oh, there's Floyd again coming through the club.

• 53:29Speaker 07

  That's great.

• 53:29Speaker 06

Did he talk to you after this?

• 53:31Speaker 05

Yeah, he came backstage. That's where we met.

• 53:33Speaker 06

And what was the, what was the vibe like backstage?

• 53:35Speaker 05

He was real quiet, he was real quiet. Hey, hey, hey, you know, can I get a picture? That was pretty much it.

• 53:38Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 53:39Speaker 05

But he's been cool ever since.

• 53:40Speaker 07

  That's all.

• 53:41Speaker 03

He turns it up, he like turns it on when the camera's on, in other words.

• 53:44Speaker 05

Oh, well, then we started to think like a man too, the next year in Vegas. And that's where I got to know him. Cause he asked me to come by, they were gonna go out one night and he asked me to come by the house, like, alright. Me being the white guy, I literally showed up at the time he told me to come and no. Nobody there, bro. Like, it's me and me and two of my boys, like, why are we here so early? Floyd was getting a massage. Bro. Like, he was on the massage table. And he's like, it was just how you think of Floyd Mayweather first and foremost. The girl's just, "Massage this shit." And he's like, "Hey, what's up, G?" I go, "Hey, how you doing? Yeah, yeah, yeah." "You Cincinnati? Yeah, it's Midwest shit, right here, Midwest shit." Yeah. Still talking like this. What is, what is happening right now?

• 54:30Speaker 05

Then he got a haircut. He gets the haircut. And the girl's kind of like, "We're way too early."

• 54:38Speaker 05

But here's the best part, this is a pretty woman moment. We're there, and then, then it gets crowded. Then, an hour later, it's crowded. And then, everybody's going to the Palms to go to some nightclub. And Floyd doesn't drink. So people think he's out partying. Yeah. He might be out, but he ain't partying. Yeah, yeah. It's all water. He, and I'm not exaggerating. Ten limos pull up, and people just start getting in the limos. And we're all going to this nightclub. And we get in limo with like, me and my boys just having a limo with like, three girls that just jumped in and barely spoke English. So now we're sitting there. God bless. And they're, they're not talking to us, they're not trying to entertain us, and I'm, we're trying to be nice. Yeah. And then, nothing. We get to the party, we can't get in. It's too crowded.

• 55:23Speaker 05

When it was, it was like a Saturday, it was Vegas already, and then Floyd's coming with a hundred and fifty people. Yeah. We're not getting in, even though we're with Floyd. I said, "Let's go to another spot." So the girls, we looked at them, said, "You wanna go with us?" And they're like, "No." And it was very apparent, "No, we're not, we're gonna fight our way, and we will eventually get to Floyd tonight." Yeah. Right? Monday, we're on set of Think Like a Man 2. They're extras. It's a movie, we had a pool scene, and they, they hired these pretty girls to be around the pool. I look at them, I go, "Oh shit." And you know I walked by, "How you doing?" "I'm going to my trailer, where it's cooler than this studio."

• 56:02Speaker 05

"Where I can sweat in private."

• 56:06Speaker 05

Have fun in this 110 degree weather, motherfucker.

• 56:10Speaker 03

I want to know early tour stories, like the first 10 years that you're in the game. Like, like, are you, are you, how early, are you ever with like some of the, the goats?

• 56:23Speaker 05

When, okay, when I started in San Diego, I was doing two different circuits. I had the black circuit and then I had the mainstream circuit. The mainstream was Bobby Lee, Darren Carter. I remember Bobby Lee. Yeah, me and Bobby Lee used to sit at Denny's and he'd always have the notebook and he's writing, writing, writing.

• 56:41Speaker 03

  I don't believe that.

• 56:45Speaker 05

He was the first one out of the open mic crew at the Comedy Store that got, that got the break, so to speak. Paulie came, Paulie Shore came down, his mom was with the Mitzi and they, and all of a sudden Bobby went to Vegas with Paulie. He came back down and we're, we're waiting, like, what's it like? What's it like? And then Bobby goes, he tells this whole fucking lie I found out 20 years later. He goes, oh my God, dude, I was with Paulie and then afterwards Mitzi says she's gonna make me a paid regular at the Comedy Store. He goes, and then I met these two girls and we went back to my room and they handcuffed me to my bed and they robbed me. He goes, I go, what? So he said they tied him up and he was naked and the clean ladies had to let him go.

• 57:30Speaker 05

The, the clean ladies came in the next day and got him. I believe this story for 20 years. Then I went on Tiger Belly and he told me it was a lie. I go, you motherfucker. No, he had us at Denny's, like, I, I, I put the grand slam down, bro.

• 57:46Speaker 05

So the girls, they just fuck you like that? They just fuck you like that? That's what I was thinking, like, oh my God, I got, I got a really, I gotta get on the road.

• 57:56Speaker 05

And then, but on the black side, it was Nick Cannon. He was doing all the roles because Nick was in a rap group called The Bomb Squad. And so I didn't.

• 58:07Speaker 03

  That describes comedy career perfectly.

• 58:11Speaker 05

That's so wrong. That's so wrong. I ain't wanna say it.

• 58:18Speaker 05

He's a good guy. He's a good guy. He's a good guy. He's put a lot of, he put a lot of people on.

• 58:23Speaker 07

Yes, I was all wiling out. That's why we would make these jokes. He wouldn't care. That's why I feel okay doing it.

• 58:28Speaker 03

We need to turn off the AC or something. It's freezing in here. Go on.

• 58:33Speaker 05

So Nick, Nick was in a rap group and I remember Magic Johnson had the talk show called The Magic Hour.

• 58:37Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 58:38Speaker 05

And they, the Magic's people saw me at the Comedy Store one night and he went back to Magic and said, I just saw the funniest white guy on the planet.

• 58:46Speaker 03

  Magic Johnson said that?

• 58:47Speaker 05

His guy said that. So Magic came to see me the next week. Fat Tuesday, people don't really, Fat Tuesday put so many people on back in the day, Tuesday night, Guy Torrey's spot. Like people were getting discovered out of place.

• 58:58Speaker 07

I bombed my dick off in that room, dog. Holy.

• 59:02Speaker 07

Dog, this happened to me so many times earlier on. I'm like halfway through bombing and then one guy just comes up there, runs the show, walks onstage, he just goes, give me the mic. And I was like, alright, okay.

• 59:12Speaker 05

That's where I got more shit out of that.

• 59:15Speaker 03

  What club?

• 59:16Speaker 07

  Comedy Store.

• 59:17Speaker 05

The main room, he had the, it was the black night.

• 59:19Speaker 03

  Fat Tuesday?

• 59:20Speaker 05

  P H T.

• 59:21Speaker 03

I thought it was tripping on Tuesday.

• 59:22Speaker 07

So it was tripping on Tuesday when I did it.

• 59:23Speaker 05

  They changed it.

• 59:24Speaker 07

And then I went back to Fat Tuesday.

• 59:25Speaker 05

  Originally it was Fat Tuesdays.

• 59:26Speaker 03

  Yeah, got it, got it.

• 59:27Speaker 05

That's where Jamie Foxx saw me and got me an audition for Held Up. I, I was there and Aries might say that didn't happen. I was there. I saw the set that got Aries mad TV. Cause they were there, the, the Fox people was there.

• 59:41Speaker 03

  Oh, wow.

• 59:42Speaker 05

  The execs.

• 59:42Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:43Speaker 05

So, um, I saw Leslie Jones go up when Chris Rock saw her and ripped that night. I was like, I'm, you look back, you're like, I was there for some like historical moment.

• 59:52Speaker 03

The set that Aries gets mad TV?

• 59:54Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 59:55Speaker 03

  What, I mean, just.

• 59:56Speaker 05

I remember the joke that killed it. He had a Michael Jackson joke where he was in a wheelchair and he said, what if, you know, Michael Jackson's in a wheelchair and he does the whole, he, he imitates him so good and he'd be like, and then he flips over, act like he turned the chair this way and this way, but he's still performing. I'm fucking up the joke.

• 1:00:11Speaker 03

  Sure, sure, sure.

• 1:00:12Speaker 05

But that's the joke that he closed with every night. Every time he did a show, he was gonna close with that. It killed.

• 1:00:18Speaker 03

  He's wildly talented, like.

• 1:00:19Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:00:19Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:00:20Speaker 07

  Aries is wild.

• 1:00:21Speaker 05

  Yeah, his imitation's unreal.

• 1:00:23Speaker 03

  Unbelievable.

• 1:00:23Speaker 05

Yeah, so Nick, I'm literally, I'm, I'm doing, I got, I'm at my apartment, I'm dubbing VHS tapes, like, to try to give the Magics people, because I got nothing. I don't have any, I don't have any clips.

• 1:00:37Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:37Speaker 05

  Not on TV yet.

• 1:00:38Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:39Speaker 05

So it's like, bad audio, bad video, and I'm trying to clip this five-minute set to give the Magics people.

• 1:00:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:47Speaker 05

And Nick shows up with his manager at the time, his name was Samir Toma, I remember Sam. And then Nick goes, "What are you doing?" I go, "Magic Johnson saw me, bro." I said, "I might get it on his talk show," and I'm all fired up. And Nick goes, "Man, I should do stand-up." And I go, "You should. Yeah, you should." And then the next week, we had this place called Mr. O's on Wednesday night, was a big urban black comedy night. And Nick went up there and did nothing but comic view jokes. And I go, "Nick, you can't do that." That's somebody else's joke. He goes, "Yeah, I saw it last night. It was funny."

• 1:01:24Speaker 05

He just didn't know. It wasn't like he was out and out stealing. He did not know. I said, "No, no, you gotta do your own jokes."

• 1:01:30Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:01:30Speaker 05

And then, less than a year later, we went up to Oakland for the Bay Area Black Comedy Competition. And Nick had like a solid six, and that's all you got. And he was clean, he was young, good-looking dude. And that's when the, the, the, all that people saw him. And he got, he got, he either got the semifinals or the finals. And then, you know, he kind of doing the warm-up.

• 1:01:56Speaker 03

This is a time before the internet. Like, now the internet is used to like, search for talent. Right? Like, you almost kind of wait for a comic to prove themselves on the internet. But before, you had to see somebody live. So there was all this tension when like, somebody special was in the room, because your whole career could change in seven minutes.

• 1:02:13Speaker 05

Yeah, at the mercy of somebody else.

• 1:02:15Speaker 03

  Simple as that.

• 1:02:16Speaker 05

Somebody likes you, and like, "I'm gonna go with him."

• 1:02:18Speaker 03

But so the anxiety, just imagine that, like, it's already nerve-wracking, I'm sure, when you go up at like, a big club, on a big night, when there's a full crowd, you want to do well. But imagine you go up and you know that, shit, Damon Wayans is in the, or Keenan Ivory's in the audience. You're like, "That's it. My career is, I'm in movies now. I'm in TV shows. They'll develop something around me."

• 1:02:37Speaker 05

Yeah, it's crazy how it happens. I, I had a- I had a TV deal with Quincy Jones and it was like the, it was like the best six months of just sitting back, listening to like a historian tell stories about Frank Sinatra, Orson Welles, Billie Holiday. He was there and he's not lying. And we had a TV show that didn't go anywhere. It didn't go, oh my God. I remember we went to ABC office and we're waiting in the lobby to go in and pitch this TV show and Quincy starts talking about strip clubs in France and that was the conversation. He goes, and then usually when they say, all right, you guys want to come back? Usually most people stop the conversation and now we're in the pitch a TV show mode. No, no, no, no, no. Quincy's still telling me the story

• 1:03:20Speaker 05

as we walk into the room. Both execs at ABC are gay as shit and I'm going, and then Quincy literally, he's ignoring him. He goes, yeah, it's different. They like the jazz, the girl strip the jazz. And then he goes, he goes, you guys ever been to strip clubs in France? They're like, no. Oh, I love this. And then he was like, they was like, I go, we're not, we're not getting this show. We pitched that show to this, nothing. Usually when execs say no, it's a day or so. I wasn't at my car. My manager already calling, yeah, they're passing. I go, big shock. That means we left and they go, we're done. I knew it was over with the minute he said you're a minute strip club in France. 2000. 2000.

• 1:04:04Speaker 03

What about like horror gigs? Did you, cause you got success quite early. Did you ever go through that stretch where you're doing the $1,500 weekend?

• 1:04:16Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, yeah. First road gig I ever got was the comic strip in El Paso and they paid me 500 bucks and I had to get there and it was like Wednesday through Sunday.

• 1:04:25Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:04:27Speaker 05

So I was in the Navy, so I drove from San Diego to El Paso and it was the easiest drive ever. Cause I was like, oh shit. Cause that's, this is the time you had to mail your headshot in, send a VHS tape, fax over a fake resume that I made up. I had nothing. I remember I said I opened up for Jim Carrey for a cancer benefit. Everything was a lie, dude. You know what I mean? And then, so I get to El Paso and it said, they got a comic condo thing where all three comics are in the same thing. I took the big bedroom, not knowing the headliners coming. Do that headline show, I go, brah, get out. I was like, oh shit, sorry. So I go in the other room. I didn't have a lot of money, so this is how I survived. I went to the grocery store.

• 1:05:12Speaker 05

I got, um, Cocoa Puffs and a gallon of milk. That's breakfast for the week. Arby's had the $2 beef and cheddars. So that was lunch and then you eat at the comedy club and you bring it back for your late night food. I was like, dude, I was $20 in food. I came back to the good. I remember thinking, oh my God, how do these comedy clubs make money?

• 1:05:37Speaker 05

I remember when I, my first comedy club headline gig after Comic View. I remember, I went, my, my agent's office, he goes, yeah, we got, we got something, club in Dayton, they're paying you $4,000. I go, holy shit, man. This one, this club might shut down.

• 1:05:57Speaker 05

How do you pay me that?

• 1:05:58Speaker 03

  Going out of business there.

• 1:05:59Speaker 07

  That's crazy.

• 1:06:00Speaker 05

Four, I was there, it was four fours, $4,000 and $400 for travel. I was like, what? $400 for a flight? Holy shit, bro.

• 1:06:10Speaker 03

What about any guys that you opened for that like to this day, you're like, I've never seen anybody kill like that? Or any guy you've been on the road? And it don't have to be big famous guys, they can be, but like.

• 1:06:20Speaker 05

The, the guy, when I first started LA, it was open miking with Pablo Francisco.

• 1:06:25Speaker 03

  Just, oh my.

• 1:06:26Speaker 05

No, I want to follow that dude. I, I would, I, I'd seen him do the Latino night, the white night, the black night, and he was the only guy that killed in all of them.

• 1:06:38Speaker 03

  Impressions, right?

• 1:06:39Speaker 07

  The movie voice, right?

• 1:06:41Speaker 05

The movie voice to Arnold Schwarzenegger at the time where he was like little tortilla boy. And it was the same bit.

• 1:06:46Speaker 03

  Every single time.

• 1:06:47Speaker 05

And I still waited to see it.

• 1:06:49Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:06:49Speaker 05

It was like, oh my God.

• 1:06:51Speaker 03

Impressions have that longevity. It's, it's, it's like a, in a way, it's almost like you're watching Magic, right? Cause it's like, and that is, sometimes the downfall is like, if you're really good at impressions, like you don't actually have a joke. We're kind of just laughing. You're like, oh yeah, you sound like that famous guy. You look like that. But the guys that can do it with a joke.

• 1:07:07Speaker 07

That's what made Eddie so impressive. He could do everything.

• 1:07:10Speaker 03

Eddie could write the bit that even if he didn't do the impression, you'd still laugh at.

• 1:07:14Speaker 05

Eddie, what's so amazing about Eddie, he was like 21.

• 1:07:17Speaker 03

  He was a kid.

• 1:07:19Speaker 05

And in the one special, he ended with the burger. The burger joke, like how his mom made the burger with the peppers. I go, that's your closer?

• 1:07:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:07:28Speaker 05

Look back on that, you're like, usually the closer is like kinda raw, rugged, something. My mom's putting peppers in a burger. I'm like, what the fuck was that? That'd have been my first joke.

• 1:07:38Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, so you're going through this, you're getting, you're getting success, you're starting to make some money, and then you're headlining on your own. You're not really opening for other guys? Like, it was pretty quick a session?

• 1:07:48Speaker 05

I didn't headline, I didn't, I didn't have the traditional feature for people, because I was in the Navy. When I started, I was on BET and in the Navy at the same time.

• 1:07:57Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:07:57Speaker 05

So how it happened was, I was starting to do stand-up, I knew that's what I wanted to do. I was going up like six days a week. Anywhere that, I mean, I was ma, there were the karaoke night at a place called El Torito. I would go up and not sing, I'd do jokes. It got to the point where people knew to get quiet when I walked up, because they go, oh, this is the funny dude, he about to tell some jokes.

• 1:08:18Speaker 03

  No way.

• 1:08:18Speaker 05

The first couple of weeks, it was rough, because they weren't paying attention. But I just wanted to get on stage and I didn't know where to go. So I go, wait, if they got a microphone, they got a little stage, I'll just start telling jokes. And then it got to the point where literally the, the host of the karaoke, "Ah y'all, you know he's here." It was like that type of vibe. And then karaoke's very, the same people every week.

• 1:08:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:08:39Speaker 05

So it really helped me, because I had to kinda do new shit every week, too. So it was, it was, it was kind of a dope thing. But I'm, I'm driving in my truck and they say, "We're looking for the funniest black comedian in San Diego." So I called in, and I didn't say I was black or I wasn't black. I just, I put a little bass in my voice.

• 1:09:01Speaker 05

So, this the contest? Yeah, yeah, I want into that shit. And then they were like, "What's your name, Gary?"

• 1:09:08Speaker 05

So I entered, I won, and then that's actually where I met Nick. Cause he rapped, he rapped on the show, his manager got him on there. And that first place got you an audition for Comic View.

• 1:09:20Speaker 03

  Got it.

• 1:09:21Speaker 05

So I auditioned for Comic View, I got on, I'm still in the Navy. So they used to film the whole season in a week. It was Monday through Friday, they either did three or five episodes a day. So, and it was a contest, you just kept moving on. So I just kept moving on every day. I took a week's leave. I won my, my rounds, like, so I got an hour special. So I'd been in stand-up less than a year and I had this hour special. I wish they would replay it, cause I know it's gotta be brutal. Because you only had to do 44 minutes.

• 1:09:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:53Speaker 05

  With commercials.

• 1:09:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:55Speaker 05

And it was so slow in pace, cause I didn't have 44.

• 1:09:58Speaker 03

  You had 24 minutes.

• 1:09:59Speaker 05

I waited till every last, ah. And then I started, it had to be silent. I was so paced, like, yeah. That clock just was moving so slow. I was like, oh shit, I got two jokes, I forgot 28. So they called me, they called me like, six months later, Curtis Gadsden was the head of BET at the time. He goes, Curtis Gadsden wants to meet with you. I drive back up to LA and he goes, yeah, we want to make you the host. And I went, what? So they want me to make me the host of Comic View. I'm still in the Navy.

• 1:10:34Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:10:35Speaker 05

So BET doesn't know I'm in the Navy. Obviously the Navy doesn't know I'm doing stand-up. But it was a funny thing, cause I don't have cable. And so I don't know I'm airing. So I'm on the base waving cards on the base and a brother would be like, motherfucker. Was you on TV last night? Yeah, yeah, have a good day, man. So I'm like, wait, am I on fucking TV? And then I would go out to like, you know, Burger King or something. And so I'm like, was you on TV? I had no idea I was airing. And I was like, I kept getting stopped. I was like, why are you motherfuckers stopping me?

• 1:11:05Speaker 03

What was it like back in the day when there were fewer channels? And you had something pop on TV?

• 1:11:12Speaker 05

Dude, you made me sound aging as fuck.

• 1:11:14Speaker 03

I'm not trying to make you sound old because I remember like guy code days when there were just fewer things to watch. So when people were watching a show, you felt it on the street.

• 1:11:25Speaker 05

  Yeah, for real.

• 1:11:26Speaker 03

Like, I remember just walking around certain areas, especially like tourist areas in New York City. If you're in Times Square, it was like, it felt like every person within an age demographic had watched the show.

• 1:11:35Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:11:35Speaker 03

With the internet now, it's different. Like with the internet, there's little echo chambers. So you'll be walking down the street, somebody recognizes you, somebody's like, I don't even know who the fuck that is. It's divided. But back in the day, it was like, if you watched comedy and you watched BT, you watched Comic View.

• 1:11:52Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:11:52Speaker 03

  So you didn't miss it.

• 1:11:54Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:11:54Speaker 03

So you would instantly feel it.

• 1:11:56Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:11:56Speaker 03

  Does that make sense?

• 1:11:57Speaker 05

Yeah. I went from like, never be on the road to being asked the headline immediately. So I didn't have the the grind of featuring for somebody.

• 1:12:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:07Speaker 05

Like, I was kind of just thrust into it.

• 1:12:09Speaker 03

That was kind of similar to my journey. Like, I didn't have a long time where I was going to featuring for people.

• 1:12:14Speaker 05

Yeah. I mean, that's the beauty of stand up. You ask a hundred comics, everybody, they're gonna give a hundred different stories.

• 1:12:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:20Speaker 05

You know, I just, um, I had to get out of the Navy. I couldn't go on the road.

• 1:12:25Speaker 06

Did any of them know, like, any of your close Navy friends know that you were doing stand up like on the side?

• 1:12:28Speaker 05

Yeah, I mean, that's how I got to do all the quote unquote black rooms. I'd be telling people like on the base, like, I'm doing stand up and the black guys are like, you can go here. Or you can go here. A lot of white comics didn't want to go there because it wasn't a bad area. But I was like, I just want to tell jokes.

• 1:12:41Speaker 06

Did it cause any tension once it premiered and once it aired and everyone knew?

• 1:12:45Speaker 05

  BET?

• 1:12:46Speaker 06

Like with the Navy, like where they're like

• 1:12:47Speaker 03

  With your superiors or whatever.

• 1:12:48Speaker 06

  You can't be doing TV.

• 1:12:49Speaker 05

Dude, I had, good thing I had black chiefs, black bosses that were watching it. These motherfuckers looked out.

• 1:12:57Speaker 03

  They loved it.

• 1:12:58Speaker 05

Yo, when I tell you my, the last three months, I wasn't showing up for work. All they said was you got, you show up Monday morning.

• 1:13:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:13:06Speaker 05

Don't get nothing pierced, keep your hair cut, then we're gonna, they, they, what they did is they put me on a part of the base where you were, I was supposed to be like grading papers, basically. It was a guy they were running, I don't know, it was some Guys that weren't, I was a cop in the Navy, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it was like guys that were trying to be temporary police officers for their command.

• 1:13:31Speaker 05

No, Andrew, I let everybody go.

• 1:13:34Speaker 05

Dude, when I say let everybody go, everybody.

• 1:13:37Speaker 03

This is why we lost the war on terror.

• 1:13:40Speaker 05

I would have been the peacemaker. But uh, um, they, they had me like in some part of the base that I only had to report this one old dude and he knew what the deal was. So I'd see him Monday morning, I'd check in and I'd be like, I'm out. And that was the last three months. Wow. And then I remember the paperwork came in like, you're out.

• 1:14:00Speaker 06

This is a good cause. The government subsidizes a good one. Like, I'm down with that.

• 1:14:04Speaker 05

But then the paperwork came in that, that kind of hurt a little bit because I was still getting paid. So then the paperwork came in like, yeah, you're, you're out. I go, fuck.

• 1:14:11Speaker 03

  Like you got dishonorably discharged?

• 1:14:13Speaker 05

  Not dishonorably, I was honorable.

• 1:14:16Speaker 05

It was just my time. And then I was like, fuck. I remember it was, it was in January. I was like, damn, I ain't got that check coming in every two weeks. Yeah. So now I'm in LA trying to make it, you know what I mean? But I wasn't, I wasn't broke or anything. That's why I don't have the whole, I didn't know where my next meal was coming from. Yeah. I didn't, I, I went to LA even. I wasn't in the hole. Right. And I didn't have any money. So when you're single with no kids, you don't need a lot. Yeah. You know what I mean? Even my, my first roommate in LA, he uh, we had no living room furniture. So if he was to break into our apartment, you'd have been like, nobody lives here. I had my bedroom, he had his bedroom. I ain't buying a couch for you. I'm buying a TV for you. Yeah. And then I end up.

• 1:14:56Speaker 06

  Living like OnlyFans girls.

• 1:15:00Speaker 03

Guys, I think it's very important to note that while we're recording this, the Knicks, the New York Knicks are currently up 3-1. Okay? That's right. They're currently up 3-1. I believe by the time this episode comes out, we have already closed out the Detroit Pistons. We are on our way into the second rounds. Okay? This is to me, an absolute no brainer. The Knicks dominating. These are easy games. We like to keep it closer ratings because this is a city that understands entertainment. It's very important to us. You are welcome. Everybody, oh, the Knicks, this call, that call. Yeah, you're welcome. Okay? You stayed, you watched that game. You're allowed to do it because for some reason, your wife is okay with you watching sports, but not anything else or not scrolling your phone. Why is that? Let's not ask questions.

• 1:15:40Speaker 03

The point I'm trying to make here, okay, is that this NBA playoffs is shaping out to be absolutely fantastic. Okay, outside of watching Boston play, which is like watching paint dry. I can't believe a team so good can be so fucking boring to watch. It has been fantastic, absolutely fantastic. What are we gonna do? Are we gonna put some money up? Yes, we are. And when we put that bread up, we're gonna do it over at Stake. Stake is the leader of global betting and US social casinos. Bet on top sports, political events. Use the promo code FLAGRUM for your welcome bonus. We've got some big ones coming up, okay? Is LeBron gonna do it? Is he gonna pull it off? Is he gonna come back once again from 3-1?

• 1:16:20Speaker 03

Or is he gonna pass the baton to the next man that's going to carry the league on his shoulders for another decade? Who knows? Who knows? You can bet on it and you'll do it over there at Stake. Anyway, let's get back to the show.

• 1:16:32Speaker 05

Crazy part of my first year in LA, I end up moving in with like this big, big drug dealer. And I didn't know. He was like the dude in LA.

• 1:16:42Speaker 03

  And he had a roommate?

• 1:16:43Speaker 05

He had a fucking mansion in Bel Air. He wanted me to house sit. He needed a white guy. I found out later to be the face of the neighborhood. Cause he would, we had these parties and the cops would get called. And I'm the one going up to the end of the driveway because you had to walk to get to the house. You couldn't see it from the street. So if cops show up, he'd always be like, "Yo G, they at the gate." You had no idea something was up.

• 1:17:11Speaker 03

If you don't, I'm from Ohio. I get to LA. I'm showing up now like at these LA parties and I'm seeing houses I've never been in before. So I don't know. In LA, you know, everything's kinda fake it till you make it type deal. So I don't know. I really was naive. I thought he threw parties. I thought he was a bodyguard. And I don't know what anything runs. I don't know what these houses run for. So I'm kinda clueless.

• 1:17:36Speaker 07

  You were a terrible cop.

• 1:17:40Speaker 05

So he literally, I don't know. You know, it's still my dude. He's in prison now. I still go visit him. It's still my guy. He got life. I don't think he's getting out. I hope he does, but I'm not gonna say what he did. Cause I want him to get out.

• 1:17:54Speaker 03

  Guess.

• 1:17:55Speaker 05

But that's still, that's still my dog, man. But I just remember. We came, I came home one time and I had never seen that many drugs in a house.

• 1:18:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:18:08Speaker 05

  Like, I walked in.

• 1:18:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:18:10Speaker 05

And there was just like, the weed, the blocks was up to my calf and it filled, it would fill this whole studio. And I'd go on, and then like five SUVs pull down the driveway, these Suburbans, and these, these brothers looked like they was off the grid. They didn't smile, they didn't say hello, they opened the door and just started loading the shit up in the back of these SUVs. And I had one of my buddies, one of my buddies was there and he goes, is this weed? My, my boy goes, yeah, what do you mean? He goes, you want some? He was like, you, I can, I can have some of this? He goes, if you want some, take some. He went like this, tried to take a pinch. Motherfucker, you won't get it, get it.

• 1:18:51Speaker 05

And I saw the glow from the last dragon.

• 1:18:57Speaker 05

So then he does the dumb shit, he goes, yo, I got some boys, man. I got some boys to help buy some weed. He goes, give my number. And then they, then it ended up going bad because he's like, yo, your boys are bullshitting, man. Don't send them by my way if they bullshitting. He like snapped on my boy. Cause he tried to, be like, if you guys are gonna buy some shit, this is like another level.

• 1:19:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:19:18Speaker 05

Like, they were running this shit, like, I don't want to give everything away, but they were running through different states.

• 1:19:23Speaker 03

Was there any concern during that time that you're like, okay, I have a promising career?

• 1:19:27Speaker 05

That's why I got out, that's why I told him I gotta move out.

• 1:19:28Speaker 03

And how, how did that combo go?

• 1:19:30Speaker 05

I literally told him, I said, bro, I said, I'm a comedian, I can't be around this shit.

• 1:19:35Speaker 03

  What'd he say?

• 1:19:35Speaker 05

Uh, I get it. And then shout out to my ex-wife, she calmed him down because there was a point he got a little angry.

• 1:19:43Speaker 03

  What, wait, what happened?

• 1:19:45Speaker 05

Um, I'm gonna leave that off the air.

• 1:19:48Speaker 03

  Okay, fair enough.

• 1:19:48Speaker 05

But, uh, got a little angry and she had to go have lunch with him and calm him down, be like, you know Gary loves you? Like, he would never do anything to you.

• 1:19:55Speaker 03

So he was worried that, that like you could potentially snitch and then he would be fucked up?

• 1:19:59Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 1:20:00Speaker 03

  I would be worried.

• 1:20:01Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 1:20:02Speaker 03

  Trust one white guy.

• 1:20:05Speaker 03

All of a sudden you get life in prison, the second he moves out of your house.

• 1:20:14Speaker 03

He goes in business right now.

• 1:20:16Speaker 05

Nah, they're cool. He knows that. That's nothing to do with me. But um, I'll tell you a cool story. So I just started headlining and we're still living together. And I come home and there's two girls in my room, right? We had like a, I think, four bedroom in the house. And then there's two girls in my room and I'm going, I walked in, I go, what the fuck? So I go to his, his room, nah, I yell, there's like, there's two girls in my room. He goes, oh shit, I thought you was getting back tomorrow. He's my bad, bro. I get him out. So the girl's like, oh, we're so sorry. Get out of my room. And he tells me, he goes, yeah, these are some of my girls from Vegas, man. I was looking out for them this week. They were like, drop dead gorgeous. They looked like they were made in a lab, right?

• 1:20:56Speaker 05

They were hookers that he brought to LA to, they were like going in the Palisades and everything. And he's the one that would drive them, sit outside, make sure they got their money. I'm sure he was getting broke off a little bit too, right?

• 1:21:08Speaker 03

Pimping is what we would call it.

• 1:21:10Speaker 05

Could be. Yeah, I know. I knew you were going that.

• 1:21:12Speaker 03

Why do you add words into it?

• 1:21:14Speaker 05

Pimp comes with a, a visual.

• 1:21:17Speaker 03

  I was going with that.

• 1:21:18Speaker 05

This was not the visual thing.

• 1:21:19Speaker 03

He was probably giving them a fair percentage.

• 1:21:21Speaker 05

They come out of my room. They go, they leave my room.

• 1:21:24Speaker 03

I was doing life in prison. He was probably really earnest with those girls.

• 1:21:28Speaker 03

  You guys deserved it.

• 1:21:29Speaker 05

They, they, they leave my room and I'm going, first I was pissed. I go, no fucks in my room. But I can't be pissed because I'm scared of my roommate. I can't be mad. So it's this internal, and then I looked in my room, I go, our room's really fucking clean. And I was like, they washed my clothes. I was like, everything, I opened my drawer, I go, this shit is folded beautifully. To be in my room, it never smelled that good. Like, all my shit was pressed. I was like this, oh, that wasn't a bad deal then being in my room. Then he goes, yo, gee, I mean, they here. Like, if I want to do something, I was like, nah, I'm good. Like, if you, they would, if they would have called me when I was on that. Podcasts of you and Charlamagne?

• 1:22:15Speaker 05

I was too like freaking out like, no, no, I'm good. I'd never seen a guy pull pussy like him though.

• 1:22:23Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:22:23Speaker 05

  In my life.

• 1:22:25Speaker 03

Wait a minute, the drug kingpin and pimp?

• 1:22:29Speaker 05

No, no, I'll give you an example.

• 1:22:35Speaker 03

Gary, are you telling me the drug dealer kingpin pimp that has a mansion in Bel Air was good at?

• 1:22:40Speaker 05

I'm gonna tell you off the air, some of the women and you won't believe me.

• 1:22:45Speaker 03

  Oh, really?

• 1:22:46Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:22:47Speaker 03

Oh, famous girls. Just at the house.

• 1:22:50Speaker 05

Say one name we believe in. Nope, but like I got, I got the movie Held Up.

• 1:22:54Speaker 03

  Halle Berry.

• 1:22:55Speaker 05

Why I was living with him. No, no. I, why I was living with him, I got the movie. I said, no.

• 1:23:02Speaker 03

Like you said, no, kinda, yeah.

• 1:23:08Speaker 05

  Andrew.

• 1:23:10Speaker 05

Definitely not. So I'm, I'm leaving the next day to go shoot, um, Held Up. So he goes, he goes, he goes, yo, um, my boys come and pick him. This one, everybody had the Lincoln navigators. He goes, I said, no, they're gonna have a car service. He goes, motherfucker, you ain't going to your first movie in a fucking, uh, uh, a sedan. He said, you know, he goes, no, I got my boy coming. We're gonna take you right, like in the navigator.

• 1:23:34Speaker 03

How do you even like connect with this guy? Like where, where does he?

• 1:23:38Speaker 05

He used to always be at the comedy clubs. And how he, how I started hanging out with them was it was Thanksgiving, this before cell phones. I was doing all the black rooms in LA.

• 1:23:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:23:49Speaker 05

So Tuesday night was the comedy store. Monday night was improv, Sunday night was Laugh Factory. It's Monday night at the improv.

• 1:23:56Speaker 03

  Mobbed it.

• 1:23:56Speaker 05

  Mobbed it Mondays.

• 1:23:57Speaker 03

  Mobbed it Mondays.

• 1:23:58Speaker 05

We're out front. D Ray wasn't hosting them. D Ray wasn't even on the scene back then. This is like 98.

• 1:24:03Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:04Speaker 05

So I'm out front, everybody's hanging out in the shit clothes and he goes, he goes, yo, gee, what you doing Thanksgiving? I go, nothing. He's come by the house. All right, what's the address? This came out, this for cell phones too.

• 1:24:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:24:15Speaker 05

Writes the address down. Thursday comes, motherfucking Gary shows up in Compton to his mom's house. And I knocked on the door, the motherfucking answer door goes, you came? I was like, you invited me.

• 1:24:28Speaker 03

  On time?

• 1:24:29Speaker 05

He just kept, yeah, he just kept like staring at me. I was like, what the fuck you staring? He goes, yo, I never had no white boy in my house. I go, my boys wouldn't believe there's a white boy in my house right now. My mama's house? He was literally tripping that I showed up.

• 1:24:42Speaker 03

  You're like a celebrity.

• 1:24:43Speaker 05

And I knew to hang with the women. Don't hang in the backyard with the dudes.

• 1:24:48Speaker 03

  Wait, why?

• 1:24:48Speaker 05

Don't play domino. If you went with the women, you good.

• 1:24:51Speaker 03

Tell me, tell me, tell me. What's the?

• 1:24:53Speaker 05

Cause if they vouch for you, we like him. He cool. They gonna, they gonna vouch for you quick.

• 1:24:58Speaker 03

But the dudes are gonna be more suspicious. They got a white guy who was a cop.

• 1:25:01Speaker 05

Yeah, why you? I stayed in the kitchen all Thanksgiving. Motherfucker, I was mixing sweet potato pie.

• 1:25:08Speaker 05

I was putting cheese in the macaroni cheese, bro. I was in that bitch.

• 1:25:16Speaker 05

I mean, this fucking crushes pumpkin.

• 1:25:20Speaker 05

I think I started crying when I ate it.

• 1:25:23Speaker 05

Thank you so much. This is so flavor vol.

• 1:25:27Speaker 03

  Okay, so you got?

• 1:25:28Speaker 05

But I got in good, that's, that's what started the relationship.

• 1:25:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:25:31Speaker 05

I showed up and then he hired me. I thought he hired me to go to Utah to host this thing for Brian Russell. This is when the Jazz had Karl Malone, John Stockton. So Brian Russell was playing for the Jazz at the time. So he, he was real cool with Brian, right? They knew each other from San Bernardino back in the day.

• 1:25:50Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:25:50Speaker 05

So they said, yo, I'll never forget. They go, Casey and JoJo and Rolls Royce, we got a concert Brian's doing. Will you host it? I said, yeah. So they fly me out to Salt Lake. I go there. It's funny, Casey and JoJo doesn't show up. I just remember it was like a junior college gym and it's packed, but it was all fucking Samoan looking people.

• 1:26:13Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:13Speaker 05

And, and I was like, oh, this ain't my audience. And I hadn't really been on TV at all. So I'm, I'm a no name about to go up. Casey didn't show up. They, they just like, they lied. They said they missed a flight and then Brian goes, "All right, I'm gonna charter a private. Where you at?" And they were, "Uh," and then they were lying. They just weren't gonna show up. And so the, the concert got canceled.

• 1:26:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:26:35Speaker 05

But it really got me in with like Brian Russell, my roommate, cause they were close. And then I remember I went to the game the next night against Portland.

• 1:26:43Speaker 03

Hold on, what happens with the show?

• 1:26:45Speaker 05

They just, everybody left. The show was canceled. That was it. I stayed backstage the whole time. I don't, and they still paid me. I showed up.

• 1:26:53Speaker 03

I mean, whoa, wow, that's gotta be embarrassing for a guy like that.

• 1:26:56Speaker 05

Yeah, he was hot. He was hot. He was like, "No show. They, they're not coming." Their, their band was there. Casey and Judd, the only two that didn't show up. The band was there. The Rolls Royce was the open act. They were there. I was there. The only two people that didn't show up was Casey and Judd.

• 1:27:10Speaker 03

Everybody's prepared to do the show and then they bail.

• 1:27:13Speaker 05

And then they was like, "We missed the flight."

• 1:27:14Speaker 03

Why didn't they say their aunt died or something like that?

• 1:27:16Speaker 05

I don't know. But I think they weren't expecting Brian to be like, "Yo, I'm about to send a private."

• 1:27:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:27:21Speaker 05

  No, they were like.

• 1:27:22Speaker 03

And then he pulled it, yeah.

• 1:27:23Speaker 05

Yeah, they pulled their, uh, truck card, so to speak. So that's what got me cool with them. And then, um, we just, uh, we just became friends over that. And then he asked me to house sit. He said, "Yo, I'm about to leave town for a couple of months, man. Can you house sit?" And I was like, "Well, let me see the house." So I'm in this fucking two-bedroom rundown apartment in North Hollywood off Lancashire. I went to his house. I went, "What the fuck? Indoor pool on the inside and outside."

• 1:27:52Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:27:53Speaker 05

Like, it was just the most beautiful home with nothing in it, by the way. No, there's no pictures, no TV, no refrigerator. There's nothing in this bitch.

• 1:28:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:28:01Speaker 05

His door had a padlock on it. You couldn't get in his room.

• 1:28:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:28:05Speaker 05

And then, um, I just remember, uh, I said, "I can house sit here." And then I asked him, I said, "Can I put pictures of me up on the wall?" He goes, "I don't give a fuck what you do. Motherfucker, I was bringing girls back there. They thought it was my shit." He said, "What are you doing?"

• 1:28:21Speaker 05

That's when comedians had TV deals? Yeah, yeah. ABC, CBS, Telemundo. I'm big, I'm big in Germany, baby. I got steak sauce in that bitch.

• 1:28:29Speaker 03

So you were living good while you were in LA? Even though at the beginning of your career?

• 1:28:33Speaker 05

I can honestly say my first year in LA, the 98 year, I got to move with Jamie Foxx, I got to roll with Jamie. I'm gonna keep that shit off the air. Uh, cause you know Jamie, man, Jamie can go. Like, parties, why, Jamie's parties are legendary.

• 1:28:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:28:50Speaker 05

So I'm hanging out with Jamie. I got the big ass house in Bel Air that people think is mine, that it's not. I go, I'll just put like this, I lived what everyone thinks the Hollywood life should be for one year. And that was enough. I'd be dead. If I kept that going. Yeah, I'd be dead.

• 1:29:08Speaker 03

  Fuck.

• 1:29:09Speaker 05

We had, we had some parties. He, we had a July 4th party in 98. Kobe showed up. Nobody knew, he was just got done with his rookie year, right? My buddy from San Diego was there and he fucked it up, the intro. Because they go, yo, Kobe's here. And I was like, oh, there was a lot of other celebs there too, right? You know, Kobe was like a, uh, I don't know, he was like, uh, he just didn't go out.

• 1:29:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:29:32Speaker 05

So for him to show up, it was a day party.

• 1:29:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:29:34Speaker 05

I remember my buddy, keep in mind, everybody's acting like it's my house. Cause they don't, he don't want anybody to know it's his. So when everybody comes, I'm getting introduced to everybody. So I remember they go, hey Kobe's here, and I go out to say hi to Kobe. My fucking buddy is like, within earshot, he keeps walking around, he go Kobe, ride. I can't wait Kobe rides here, jelly bean son. Kobe, Kobe ride. I go, dude, shut the fuck up! And he's, when he's standing there, I'm already in his dream, he goes Kobe, baby.

• 1:30:02Speaker 05

  I can't wait Kobe's here, K to the O to the V to the E.

• 1:30:06Speaker 05

And you can tell Kobe's like shaking my hammer going, the fuck?

• 1:30:11Speaker 05

But he just kept walking around us. Like, what are you doing? Like, I pull him aside, go, what the fuck are you doing, bro? He goes, that's fucking Kobe ride, bro. That's Kobe ride. I was like...

• 1:30:21Speaker 03

So Kobe's 19 at this point?

• 1:30:23Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 1:30:24Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:30:25Speaker 05

  He wasn't drinking or nothing.

• 1:30:26Speaker 03

No, I'm not trying to incriminate you.

• 1:30:27Speaker 05

And he was there for probably, he was probably there less than an hour.

• 1:30:31Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:30:31Speaker 05

We came, hung out, had some handler, bodyguard with him. He was real cool though.

• 1:30:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:30:36Speaker 05

Real, real cool. But there was like, at that time, I bet you half the NFL was at that party.

• 1:30:41Speaker 03

  Holy shit.

• 1:30:42Speaker 05

It was a, that, that party was so epic. I would be at like... A Gold's Gym in Pasadena and somebody like, yo, you have another party?

• 1:30:53Speaker 03

So you were in a lot of ways, the man, a year into comedy.

• 1:30:58Speaker 05

  In LA.

• 1:30:59Speaker 03

In LA. A year into your LA comedy. Yeah, you had San Diego first and then you moved to LA.

• 1:31:04Speaker 05

I'm a white guy doing all the black shit.

• 1:31:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:31:05Speaker 05

So I was the only one really doing it.

• 1:31:07Speaker 03

  So you were very recognizable.

• 1:31:09Speaker 05

Early twenties. I'm at, I'm at that age where you're going out and you're all that stuff. So it was, I don't, that was, that was one of the funnest years of my life. I really got to live the LA experience for one year.

• 1:31:21Speaker 03

Okay, you're still popping at this time and all these people are coming to your house and it's the party. Are you like believing the hype? Are you hitting on like famous chicks? Are you?

• 1:31:30Speaker 05

I had no problem hitting on famous chicks.

• 1:31:31Speaker 03

  And was it successful?

• 1:31:33Speaker 05

  Uh huh. Couple.

• 1:31:34Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:31:35Speaker 05

  Not, no A-listers.

• 1:31:36Speaker 03

  Well, you know.

• 1:31:38Speaker 05

Couple classmates from a different world.

• 1:31:43Speaker 05

I don't mean regulars. I mean one episode.

• 1:31:50Speaker 05

  One of her sorority sisters.

• 1:31:56Speaker 03

Okay, when you move out, is it a reality check?

• 1:32:01Speaker 05

Well, I had to go. That was when the shit was hitting the fan, bro.

• 1:32:05Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:32:05Speaker 05

  Like I'm seeing shit I shouldn't see.

• 1:32:07Speaker 03

No, I know, but then you have to adjust your lifestyle.

• 1:32:10Speaker 05

Yeah, now you're back in the two bedroom. But, but, no.

• 1:32:14Speaker 05

This all happened like, over the course of six, seven months. So in that six, seven months, I got the hosting job on BET. So I'm on TV now.

• 1:32:23Speaker 03

But your new house doesn't look like that, I imagine.

• 1:32:25Speaker 05

  No.

• 1:32:26Speaker 03

So there has to be an adjustment period and like, are all these people that were, you know, kind of, you know, living the good life around you, then they see your new house, are they looking at you differently? Do they think?

• 1:32:35Speaker 05

No, I didn't. Mm-mm. I don't think it was like that. I was like, I just, I ended up moving in with my ex. And she had a, she had a nice little, it was, it was completely opposite. It went from party, party, party to now I'm living in a nice townhouse in, in Glendale.

• 1:32:51Speaker 03

  Right, right.

• 1:32:52Speaker 05

And so it's, it's very quiet now. You know what I mean? So it was, you know, it was an easy transition.

• 1:32:57Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:32:58Speaker 06

Did you ever have interaction with Kobe after that party?

• 1:33:01Speaker 05

Nope. It was one and only.

• 1:33:02Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 1:33:03Speaker 05

My boy fucked that all up. I still blame him to this day. I was like, dude, what the, he thought that was my house?

• 1:33:11Speaker 05

I'll never forget his fucking cheesy ass. I can call it out, Scott King, motherfucker from Dayton, Ohio. God damn it, Scott. He fucked that all up.

• 1:33:22Speaker 06

And every time the cops came, were you able to smooth it over?

• 1:33:24Speaker 05

  Every time.

• 1:33:25Speaker 06

There was never a moment where it was like-

• 1:33:26Speaker 03

What'd you say? Did you play the military card? What'd you say?

• 1:33:28Speaker 05

No, like, so we had, there wasn't neighbors close by, but they were in the vicinity. And all they see is like a line of cars and black people getting out, you know? And I'm talking like, you're talking like Nate Dogg type people, right? You're not looking at Wayne Brady's getting out.

• 1:33:46Speaker 05

So they're like, it's all these black people and, you know, they're hearing music and we're partying. We, we never had late night parties. It was always, the July 4th was like noon to 7.

• 1:33:55Speaker 03

  Ah, that's smart.

• 1:33:56Speaker 05

And then we weeded everybody out and then we let maybe like 30 people stay late. And it was always good odds. It was 10 dudes and like 20 girls, you know what I mean?

• 1:34:07Speaker 03

And is that by design? Like, are you-

• 1:34:09Speaker 05

  What's that?

• 1:34:10Speaker 03

A freak off. So the freak off, what happened is you're out.

• 1:34:12Speaker 05

  I'm like this.

• 1:34:15Speaker 06

  I've never heard of that.

• 1:34:17Speaker 05

There is a story I can share. So the same night that July 4th party, we're afterwards, we're in a jacuzzi and there's like 10 people in the jacuzzi and we're all just kind of sitting. Keep in mind, I'm, I'm still young in the game and everything's just, I'm just soaking everything in like a sponge. We had a sauna and this guy started fucking this girl in the sauna. So everyone's just talking, let's say we're talking about the Lakers or the Clippers or something. And this, all they see is this girl's ass cheek and the steam. And he's just pounding it and he's got her up and nobody's acknowledging it. I'm going, are we not gonna talk about the bitch getting fucked?

• 1:34:57Speaker 05

I don't care the Karl Malone punk shack in the playoffs. This dude is fucking a girl right here.

• 1:35:05Speaker 05

So the whole time we're talking, I'm jumping like this, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:35:10Speaker 05

It never got acknowledged and then they just came out like, how y'all doing? It's like, oh, LA is different.

• 1:35:17Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:35:17Speaker 05

  LA is different, bro.

• 1:35:18Speaker 03

So you live like the, what people assume is the wild LA life?

• 1:35:23Speaker 05

  Yeah. I didn't, I observed it.

• 1:35:25Speaker 03

You observed it. I don't want to put anything bad on you, but like when people do talk about Hollywood and these freak-offs and these parties, there is a version of that which kind of exists?

• 1:35:33Speaker 05

Oh, I, I don't doubt anything after the first.

• 1:35:35Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:35:35Speaker 05

  First year I saw.

• 1:35:37Speaker 07

So you think it gets as crazy as everybody says, even crazier than what you saw?

• 1:35:40Speaker 05

I think it gets way crazier than what I saw.

• 1:35:42Speaker 03

  Like?

• 1:35:42Speaker 05

I saw a minor version of it.

• 1:35:44Speaker 03

Like when people talk about the Diddy shit, are you, are you like a hundred percent some weird things were happening at those parties?

• 1:35:49Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:35:50Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:35:51Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:35:51Speaker 03

Like shit that ever made you feel uncomfortable?

• 1:35:54Speaker 07

Did Diddy ever ask you to live with him?

• 1:35:55Speaker 05

No, no, dude, don't touch me and shit.

• 1:35:57Speaker 03

Nothing illegal, no, nothing illegal in that way, but like so debaucherous that you're like?

• 1:36:01Speaker 07

  Gay, you're saying gay.

• 1:36:02Speaker 03

No, no, I, I'm not saying, I'm not saying that. I mean like so debaucherous that you're like, yo, what are we even doing here? Like fucking is fun, but?

• 1:36:10Speaker 05

No, no, I never saw nothing that, um, would, would make me uncomfortable. I would say that.

• 1:36:17Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:36:18Speaker 05

It was nev- it was, I never saw no gay shit.

• 1:36:21Speaker 07

Even after that one year, you, did you ever like, cause you're in the industry, you're Think Like a Man, massive hit, Think Like a Man 2 comes out. Are you getting invited to any of that shit that they're like, yo, this is weird and I don't feel comfortable with what I'm seeing?

• 1:36:33Speaker 05

No, no, I never went to no freak-off.

• 1:36:35Speaker 03

You meet Harvey Weinstein in a hotel room?

• 1:36:37Speaker 05

No, no, no, no, no. None of that. That first year was the most I'd seen. Probably in my life, to this day.

• 1:36:42Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:36:43Speaker 05

And it was the, honestly, it was the age I was at, it was the time, that time in LA.

• 1:36:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:36:49Speaker 05

You know what I mean? And it was just, it was just the stars aligned, so to speak. Like everything was happening. I got, I got the Jose Jamo comic view. I'm a white guy on a black show. I get a movie with Jamie Foxx, which is huge that time, right? Held up.

• 1:37:01Speaker 07

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:37:03Speaker 05

We shot up in Canada, so I was kinda, Jamie was feeling me out, like is Gary cool or not? You know what I mean? So it was just, it was just, honestly, I wouldn't say anything. It was great.

• 1:37:12Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:37:13Speaker 05

And, and the thing is, I'm still cool with the dude. After it all hit the fan, I still go back, I've, man, I visit that dude and, and I visit him and, uh, San Quentin in Folsom. He's somewhere else now. I'm probably gonna go see him in a couple of weeks when I'm up in the Bay. You know what I mean? He's still my guy. He didn't ever do me wrong. You know what I mean? And I literally told him like when I had to move out, I go, dude, I can't be around this shit, bro. I mean, I'm seeing, I'm not seeing like, I'm not seeing anybody rob anybody. I'm not seeing anybody overdose, but I'm going, Jesus, like, the, the one story that I was like, oh, this is different. It used to be the Key Club in LA. Yeah.

• 1:37:56Speaker 05

So, and the Century Club was Sunday night in LA. Okay. The Century Club's a better story. The promoter for the Century Club at the time, I don't know who he was, I'd always go there with my, my guy, right? We always got in, we always walked in, nobody stopped us, right? One night I went out by myself and I told him, I said, bro, I'm gonna go to the Century Club. He goes, alright, I'm just gonna chill the house, alright. So I go, the promoter wouldn't let me in. So I'm sitting, I was like, and he literally asked, he goes, yo. Where's the boy? I was like, oh, he didn't come. And he was like, alright, and just let me stand out there, go, oh, so I just got my truck and drove back home. So I'm home like an hour later, he goes, I thought you was going to Century Club. I go, yeah, your boy wouldn't let me in. He goes, I'll handle it. That's all he said, right? That July 4th party, right? He goes, gee, come here.

• 1:38:41Speaker 05

I said, what? He's got the dude in the closet at the house. Holy shit. So he opens the closet and the dude's there and he goes, hey, tell me what the fuck happened. And I was like, I don't know what you're talking about. He goes, did you go to Century Club? I go, yeah. He goes, so the guy's like in the closet and he goes, yo, you let my boy in? When he's with me, when he's not with me, he goes, he's me, blah, blah, blah. And I'm going, what the fuck is about to happen? And I go, hey, man, I think it was just a misunderstanding. When I said that, that fucking promoter goes, that's all it was? Misunderstanding? Misunderstanding?

• 1:39:15Speaker 05

Wait a minute, why is this motherfucker in the closet? And he's like this, hold on, I was like, oh, this is some different shit, you know what I mean? Motherfucker, don't you ever stop my boy, right?

• 1:39:26Speaker 07

  Crazy shit.

• 1:39:27Speaker 05

We went to the Key Club one time on Sunset. That's so dope. This stresses me out, this gives me so much anxiety. So we went to the Key Club one night in LA and we usually just walked in and this one big, big old redheaded white bouncer grabbed him by the arm. I like how you let people know when someone's white.

• 1:39:51Speaker 05

Listen, most white people, they never say the color of skin if it's a white person. But you're around so few white people that you have to point it out? Yeah, redheaded white dude. You know who you were, the bouncer at the Key Club?

• 1:40:10Speaker 05

So. We would have got it with redheads.

• 1:40:13Speaker 05

They come say red bone, I don't want to be.

• 1:40:18Speaker 05

Go on, go on, go on, go on. He grabbed him by the arm, did nothing wrong, like if it's your first day at the nightclub. Yeah. You're supposed to stop people from walking in. Yeah. Motherfucker, he grabbed him and he was like, all of a sudden he freaked out, like he goes, he goes, he looked at him and he was going to his car. And I was like, oh shit, is he about to grab something? Yeah, yeah. So I'm following him down Sunset, I'm going, bro, bro, it ain't that serious, he goes, no fuck that shit, they might stop me bitch. I was like, oh, what the fuck was about to happen, right? We come back, the promoter for the Key Club of the night is now following him. He goes, bro, he ain't know, he ain't know, and then he goes, he goes, him or me? The motherfucker went back and goes, you're fired.

• 1:40:58Speaker 07

  Wow.

• 1:40:59Speaker 05

  Fired the bouncer, like that.

• 1:41:01Speaker 07

  Wow.

• 1:41:02Speaker 05

The bouncer was like, what the fuck I do?

• 1:41:03Speaker 07

Bouncer got lucky to be honest with you, he just got fired, yeah.

• 1:41:06Speaker 05

So this was a real dude, that's great.

• 1:41:07Speaker 05

No, no, this motherfucker was no joke, bro, I'm giving you like the PG.

• 1:41:12Speaker 03

Yeah, we think he got life in prison for it.

• 1:41:13Speaker 06

Yeah, of course, but still, I mean.

• 1:41:15Speaker 05

I'm not saying his name for a reason.

• 1:41:17Speaker 06

Yeah, I don't want to say.

• 1:41:18Speaker 05

Yeah, I don't even want to know.

• 1:41:19Speaker 06

I don't want to know anything.

• 1:41:20Speaker 05

Yeah, that's my dog. But off air, I'll, I'll pull him up. I'll show you.

• 1:41:24Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, what a fucking line. Dude, who's like six, seven.

• 1:41:28Speaker 05

  He wasn't a small dude.

• 1:41:29Speaker 03

Does life get more boring after that for you? Like you get married, you have a family, which is not boring at all. Obviously, it's incredible, but like you're living this insane movie for about six or seven months.

• 1:41:40Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:41:40Speaker 03

And then you go to have a very kind of traditional home. You're on the road, you have success. Like, what, what is happening in your brain at that point in time? Are you like less anxious? Like, you must be a little nervous. You're living with a drug dealer, he's throwing parties, pimping girls and doing your laundry.

• 1:41:55Speaker 05

Locked up, I go, yeah, that was a good move.

• 1:41:57Speaker 03

  That was, yeah.

• 1:41:58Speaker 05

It was a good move getting out of there.

• 1:41:59Speaker 03

Getting out of there, because you could have got caught up in like a Rico, right?

• 1:42:02Speaker 05

  I don't know if, I don't know.

• 1:42:04Speaker 03

Well, I don't know. What is it called when you're aware of what's going on? Uh, you're.

• 1:42:08Speaker 06

  Eating and bedding or something?

• 1:42:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:42:10Speaker 05

I was purposely not asking questions. And I think that's why he hung out with me. I never asked a fucking word, bro.

• 1:42:16Speaker 03

So it's just like, yo, let's have fun. We're hanging out.

• 1:42:18Speaker 05

But I will say, I never paid for a drink. I never, I never had no problem getting into clubs. And, and, and if anybody is like, we'll watch this and be like, Gary bullshitting. If you know who I'm talking about.

• 1:42:33Speaker 03

Let's get back to the show. Do you think that that played a part in your acceptance in the community outside of, just in LA specifically?

• 1:42:45Speaker 05

Oh, a hundred percent. I was with the guy.

• 1:42:47Speaker 03

So you're with the guy and it's like, you're this white dude that you're in, you're in the black comedy circles. But, which at some point in time, when you start to get success, there might be like some pushback. I'm sure you've experienced that in your, in your career. Like you've had massive success as a white dude in black comedy. But do you think at that point in time, it was like, no, he's cool. He's with him. There was this cosign. Do you think that was helpful in the beginning?

• 1:43:09Speaker 05

I think in LA, it just got me into rooms. Like people was like, you know what I mean? Do you know, um?

• 1:43:16Speaker 05

  Scrancho?

• 1:43:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:43:17Speaker 05

Okay, Scrancho knows who I'm talking about.

• 1:43:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:43:19Speaker 05

Scrancho like was running the same group with him, right? Scrancho, one night, accused me of stealing one of his jokes. Have you seen my act and Scrancho's act?

• 1:43:31Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:43:32Speaker 05

It's literally like, like Bill Maher said, I'm trying to steal politically incorrect.

• 1:43:37Speaker 05

So Scrancho, and Scrancho was being cool.

• 1:43:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:43:40Speaker 05

Scrancho was not being asshole. We're outside the improv and he was like, yo gee, my boy said, you took something? I go, what? What they, here's what they said I took. Scrancho, um, used to bring somebody on stage or something for a bit. And then one night I'm messing around, I brought somebody on stage.

• 1:44:00Speaker 03

But it wasn't planned, you're just kind of riffing it, yeah.

• 1:44:03Speaker 05

And Scrancho knew, and this is not indictment on Scrancho, he was cool as fuck. We was outside, we're talking, but his boys was like, motherfucker, he stole your shit. They're, they're hyping him up, they're like hyping him up to hit me, right? I go back.

• 1:44:16Speaker 03

  Scrancho can go too.

• 1:44:17Speaker 05

  Hold on.

• 1:44:18Speaker 03

  That's not a guy.

• 1:44:18Speaker 05

Yeah. I go back and tell my guy, I say, yo, fucking Scrancho and his boys, man. He goes, huh? I'll handle it.

• 1:44:26Speaker 03

  Oh, Jesus.

• 1:44:27Speaker 05

  We see Scrancho.

• 1:44:28Speaker 03

  I'll handle it.

Next Tuesday, we see him at the Comedy Store. Scrancho pulls me aside, I, he, my boy sees Scrancho and the same dudes.

• 1:44:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:44:41Speaker 05

Pulls aside and tells Scrancho, man, hey, somebody say Gary, stole your shit? And Scrancho like, nah, he was misunderstanding, motherfucker said this and you know, it ain't like that. He goes, alright, and he looked at his boys, and he, he was like, he, he looked at the boy, he goes, you never speak to him again. And he got to say, Gary, you say to me. And they was like, alright, alright.

• 1:45:02Speaker 03

I was like, what the fuck?

• 1:45:04Speaker 07

  That's crazy.

• 1:45:05Speaker 05

You know? He was like, don't you ever speak to him again, whatever you say to him, you say to me.

• 1:45:09Speaker 03

What happened, like, how do you guys think you developed that, or like, he, he really seems to care for you? He really seems to look out for you.

• 1:45:15Speaker 05

  Facts.

• 1:45:15Speaker 03

And where, where does that come from?

• 1:45:18Speaker 05

He just said, I don't know, he always said like, I, I never asked questions, I never.

• 1:45:24Speaker 03

Do you think that you're like the one person in his life that just made him feel like a regular guy?

• 1:45:28Speaker 05

  Maybe.

• 1:45:29Speaker 03

He's this incredibly powerful feared human being from the stories you tell me.

• 1:45:33Speaker 05

  Right.

• 1:45:34Speaker 03

And you gotta carry that weight every single interaction you have. Like, he doesn't get led into a club. He has to make it known that you can't do that to a person like him.

• 1:45:44Speaker 05

  Not him.

• 1:45:45Speaker 03

And at every point in time, I imagine he's thinking about like how he exists within the hierarchy of humans he's around. That bouncer gets fired, that gets sent around, hey, don't mess with this guy. It's constantly, don't mess with this guy. And then when he's hanging out with you, maybe he feels like he can kind of let that ego go a little bit.

• 1:46:01Speaker 05

But he, he used to love the comedy clubs, bro. He was there every night.

• 1:46:04Speaker 03

Outside of the comedy clubs, I'm trying to understand like why he's so protective of you, why you become a representation of him.

• 1:46:09Speaker 06

When you guys were hanging, just the two of you, were you making him laugh? Like, were you cracking him up?

• 1:46:12Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:46:13Speaker 06

Like, he was silly when it was just y'all.

• 1:46:14Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:46:14Speaker 03

Was, was he like, was he also joking around? Did you see a different side of him?

• 1:46:18Speaker 05

I saw a different side of him.

• 1:46:19Speaker 03

And what, what was that side?

• 1:46:20Speaker 05

Uh, I don't know, I saw him, he kind of let his guard down.

• 1:46:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:46:24Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:46:24Speaker 03

And what is it about, what is it about you that allows him to do that?

• 1:46:28Speaker 05

I don't know. It's, it's a weird thing. It was like complete opposites, just hanging out.

• 1:46:33Speaker 03

  Like, I wonder.

• 1:46:33Speaker 05

Like, oh, here's a funny story. I came in one time and he was in my room and he was asleep on the bed. But he had the, he had the gun in his hand, right? So he seemed like this, and I'm doing this. I'm trying, I go, hey!

• 1:46:52Speaker 05

No! Trying to wake him up and not get shot. No! My guy! I'm yelling his name, yeah! And then he's like, he wakes up, he goes, what the fuck you doing? I'm like, take that fucking gun out of your hand! I don't want you to wake up and fucking it goes off. And then he looks at me like, well, fuck it, safety's on.

• 1:47:11Speaker 05

  But I don't know.

• 1:47:12Speaker 03

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:47:12Speaker 05

I'm not around that world. I'm like, yo!

• 1:47:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:47:14Speaker 05

  My guy!

• 1:47:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:47:15Speaker 06

Were you ever like careful making jokes around him? Cause I'm sure with everyone, you're like ribbing people, you know, roasting, whatever, but with.

• 1:47:20Speaker 05

  I never roasted him.

• 1:47:21Speaker 06

Were you intentional about it? Like, oh, I don't want to cross a line with this guy?

• 1:47:24Speaker 05

Yeah, not intentional, I just didn't feel the need.

• 1:47:27Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:47:27Speaker 05

You know? I didn't feel the need. Yeah, that was that. Why are you so comfortable in that kind of environment like growing up in Ohio? You don't know any better. That's. You're naive. I just got to LA, bro. He's like really taking care of me like as far as like, you know, I'm getting into spots. I'm in the mix, you know? He had money, so I was never paying for shit. Right.

• 1:47:51Speaker 03

I wonder if you being an outsider, not just you being a white guy, but you just not being involved in his world at all allows him to let the guard down. Because if he's like getting vulnerable and telling some random person in his crew, things that make him nervous or he's afraid of, that starts to go around and then all of a sudden people start to think, yo, he's actually scared or he's this, he's vulnerable. But with you, you're this outsider. It's like you almost get to be like, uh, so the Tony Soprano's therapist.

• 1:48:21Speaker 05

Yeah. He doesn't have to prove he's hard with.

• 1:48:23Speaker 03

He doesn't have to constantly prove he's hard all the time, which is probably like a very relaxing moment in someone's life.

• 1:48:29Speaker 05

  I didn't think about that.

• 1:48:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:48:31Speaker 05

  No?

• 1:48:31Speaker 07

Yeah, you're just laughing, making him laugh. Y'all are just goofing around. It's like, it's such a break from the rest of his life.

• 1:48:37Speaker 03

Yeah. I mean, just, I can't imagine the pressure of every interaction in your life. You have to let everybody in that room know that you are the baddest motherfucker on the planet. That's stressful to even consider.

• 1:48:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:48:50Speaker 03

The fact he doesn't get let in the club and he has to go, I'm sure on some level he's just like, fuck, if I don't make a thing out of this.

• 1:48:57Speaker 05

I still don't know what was gonna happen.

• 1:49:00Speaker 03

He was gonna make a situation.

• 1:49:01Speaker 05

It seemed like it, yeah, but I was like, what is going on right now? You know what I mean? I still have no idea what would happen that night. Fuck.

• 1:49:09Speaker 03

Yeah. So then you, so then you leave that, you go on the road and at this point in time, are you just selling tickets? Like the road is kind of easy to fill up or?

• 1:49:17Speaker 05

I would, no, I wasn't, I, I think people got this misconception that I got on BET and I was just selling out everywhere.

• 1:49:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:49:23Speaker 05

  That didn't happen for me.

• 1:49:23Speaker 03

  Where's the horror stories?

• 1:49:25Speaker 07

Yeah. What is that period between Bel Air and 2011, Mike Epps, uh, Nokia event? What is that time like?

• 1:49:33Speaker 03

Yeah. When are you doing the comic strip in Edmonton for 40 people like?

• 1:49:37Speaker 05

Yeah. Yeah. I don't have a lot of those stories.

• 1:49:40Speaker 03

  Interesting.

• 1:49:40Speaker 07

  That's great. That's awesome.

• 1:49:42Speaker 05

I don't have the, cause I was, I, I just, I got the job on BET and I was headlining and I wasn't that great.

• 1:49:50Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:49:50Speaker 05

But I was selling a decent amount of tickets that I always got put on the ensemble shows at theaters. You know what I mean? You're doing those types of things and I was always like.

• 1:49:59Speaker 07

  You're always comfortable?

• 1:50:00Speaker 05

I've never had a, I never had to worry about the club not bringing me back.

• 1:50:04Speaker 03

Did you ever build close relationships with any of these guys? Any of like, any of the comedians that we would know? Like, who were you closest to? Or were you kind of your own man on an island?

• 1:50:14Speaker 05

Yeah, I was kind of on an island.

• 1:50:15Speaker 03

Nobody that you really got close to? Cause I've seen you around these space, like-

• 1:50:20Speaker 07

Honestly, the friendships usually come from grinding, like you Bobby Lee a little bit, but like-

• 1:50:25Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:50:25Speaker 07

We were at the Landin' for years.

• 1:50:27Speaker 05

I don't think I, it's weird, I never thought about that. I don't think I have any like, super close-

• 1:50:32Speaker 07

So you got on kind of quickly.

• 1:50:34Speaker 05

  And you're by yourself?

• 1:50:35Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:50:35Speaker 05

  You catch your opener.

• 1:50:36Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's lonely.

• 1:50:37Speaker 05

You're seeing, like I said, when I met him, I was like, I always see you on the flyers, coming.

• 1:50:41Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:50:42Speaker 05

Or you just left, you know what I mean? He's coming or leaving. That's usually how you get to know people, like they're coming or going. But I don't have any like, people I call all the time, stand-up wise. I'm trying to think. Uh, no. I mean, I still, I probably talk to Joe Coy a lot.

• 1:50:59Speaker 03

  Interesting.

• 1:51:00Speaker 07

  He's great.

• 1:51:00Speaker 05

You know, he was around in the beginning.

• 1:51:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:51:02Speaker 05

We met, I think we met, we really met at University of Alabama one night. Had a college show together. And he still brings up how I fucked him one night at the Comedy Store.

• 1:51:14Speaker 03

  What, what happened?

• 1:51:14Speaker 05

I switched the lineup and I put him up after a guy that was really strong. And Joe just was starting and it was the Black Knight. And he fucking ate dick and he still blames me. I go, dude, I'm so sorry. Like, and I didn't do it with them malicious and tan. I don't, to this day, I don't even remember why I switched the lineup. But it literally was my call.

• 1:51:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:51:35Speaker 05

And he still like remembers it. It's funny, the fucker's about to do SoFi with Gabriel Glazier and he's still like, you motherfucker.

• 1:51:41Speaker 03

  I bombed once.

• 1:51:42Speaker 05

  Motherfucker, like, you're fine.

• 1:51:45Speaker 03

  Who is your hardest follow?

• 1:51:48Speaker 05

Oof. Back in the day, when I first started, uh- Um, nobody wanted to go after Craig Robinson.

• 1:51:57Speaker 03

  Craig.

• 1:51:58Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:51:58Speaker 05

Cause he had a, he had a fucking joke with his piano.

• 1:52:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:52:02Speaker 05

That brought the goddamn house down.

• 1:52:04Speaker 03

The one from that he did on Def Comedy Jam?

• 1:52:06Speaker 05

He goes, can I see your booty? He does this whole song and he goes like this. He did this whole bit that he goes, he goes, you know, can I see your booty? And then he come, he goes, see that girl? Everyone wants to see your booty. Something like that. It was just, he killed. I was like, every time you see him on the little lineup, you'd be like, fuck dude. I gotta go after this bitch?

• 1:52:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:52:27Speaker 05

Cause you know he's gonna destroy.

• 1:52:28Speaker 03

  So Craig.

• 1:52:28Speaker 05

  Nobody wanted to follow Cat.

• 1:52:31Speaker 03

  Cat.

• 1:52:31Speaker 05

Back in the day when you, when we were open miking.

• 1:52:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:52:33Speaker 05

He was Cat in the Hat, cause he had the, the biggie bit, the one he accused Cedric of stealing. He had that biggie bit where the car broke down. Dad brought the house down. She like, fuck. But I think the strongest back when I first got to LA was Earthquake.

• 1:52:48Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:52:49Speaker 05

Nobody, Earthquake had a fucking closer and it was one of those runs.

• 1:52:56Speaker 03

  It was just built.

• 1:52:56Speaker 05

That went for like five minutes. And it was like, I was dating this girl and she had a baby adult. And it was like this, he played, he acted like this baby was in the crib with real fucking problems. You know what I mean? Going off like in baby talk and I was like, and the crowd just.

• 1:53:14Speaker 05

And then Earthquake, you know, Earthquake out. Like, you know, it's not like a big sin of it. They're in the middle of fucking chaos. He goes, Earthquake out.

• 1:53:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:53:22Speaker 05

And dips and I was like, oh my fucking god. That's where I learned, don't watch stand up, especially before you go up. Cause if I know I'm following, back in the open mic day.

• 1:53:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:53:33Speaker 05

If I'm going after Quake, Cat, Craig, any of those dudes, I'm outside the building.

• 1:53:37Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:53:38Speaker 05

So I don't hear this shit.

• 1:53:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:53:40Speaker 05

And I'm making sure I got loud conversations.

• 1:53:42Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:53:42Speaker 05

Hey, can see you again, Andrew! I don't wanna hear that shit.

• 1:53:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:53:46Speaker 05

So when I go in, I'm not psyching myself out. You know what I mean? But Quake had the strongest closer in the late nineties, I think.

• 1:53:53Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:53:54Speaker 05

Yeah. I mean, man, that motherfucker bring the house down with that shit.

• 1:53:57Speaker 03

Wow, I wanna find that bit. I've never, I've never heard that.

• 1:53:59Speaker 05

Yeah. It's dated, cause remember it's something, something had to do with a pager. You know, did you, did you use my code on my pages? Shit like that. So it's data now. Yeah, I would say Quake was a window I wanted to follow back then.

• 1:54:11Speaker 03

Any, uh, this is a bad question, but uh, there's part of me that's like, is there any set that you had that was just like, absolutely destructive and then somebody that was big, big, big just could not step into afterwards?

• 1:54:28Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:54:29Speaker 03

We don't have to name names. I don't want to name names, but like.

• 1:54:31Speaker 05

They, it happened at the, um, it happened at the Bay Area Black Comedy Conference, the same one that Nick won.

• 1:54:38Speaker 03

  Oh, really?

• 1:54:39Speaker 05

I had a, I don't know what I said, but the guy that went after me did really bad. And it was, they used to like call the bombs his name. For a minute, like, you know, like you had a, like if you bombed after me, I go, oh, you had an Andrew? You know what I mean?

• 1:54:57Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 1:54:58Speaker 05

I can't remember the guy's name though. Oh my, I remember, I just remember he had a pink, the only thing I remember, he came after me, he had a pink sweater with the big white lapels coming out afterwards. It just was really bad that night. I don't like to shit on comics.

• 1:55:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:55:12Speaker 05

I really can't remember his name though, because I've never seen anything.

• 1:55:15Speaker 03

  Better not to do it.

• 1:55:16Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:55:16Speaker 03

  Not to do that.

• 1:55:17Speaker 05

That, that was a, that was a rough one for him.

• 1:55:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:55:20Speaker 05

  You know what I mean?

• 1:55:21Speaker 06

I'm curious, like so many of the stories is you obviously having so much acceptance within the black community specifically. I'm curious, was there ever any issue being a white dude in that space? That caused you problems or you lost opportunities purely just because of, you know, the way you look like?

• 1:55:35Speaker 05

No, I think I didn't, um, I think it's one thing to be a white guy and you're acting like you want to hang out with black people when you're ingrained in the culture. Like, like I said, they saw me at the black spots when I got to LA. I wasn't, I wasn't doing the Comedy Store all night. I was, I was going to Maverick's Flat. I was going to the Comiac Theater. I was going to all the, all the black shit and not, not the ones in Hollywood. I'm talking with the ones in, in Compton and, and on the other side of the, uh, the 10. You know what I mean? So I don't think, I didn't, I never saw that. Most of the comics was cool.

• 1:56:07Speaker 03

It's so weird how like, I saw that in New York too. Like, we would do the black rooms in New York, or coming up. And I just didn't understand why it was so divided. Especially like-

• 1:56:18Speaker 05

Is it my, the, the, the black comedy world?

• 1:56:19Speaker 03

  Yeah, no, like, why comics-

• 1:56:21Speaker 05

  White and black?

• 1:56:22Speaker 03

Yeah, there'd be like, these white comics that would be doing open mics. They'd be trying to get up at the clubs. And they would do these open mics that were horrible. And the black rooms, this is what I'll say about the black rooms. If you show up and you wanna get up- They will get you up. They'll get you up!

• 1:56:34Speaker 05

That's why I started doing them.

• 1:56:35Speaker 03

They're way more accepting than the, the clubs are not gonna make you send them a tape, go do this whole fucking rigmarole. And then, open mics in the city are just literally that. It's just comedians, there, there's no regular audience member. So in my mind, I was just like, well, I wanna go up wherever. It's not like weird to perform for black people. I grew up in New York City. But the, the, what I saw was like, mostly the non-black comics in New York would not even venture to the black rooms.

• 1:56:58Speaker 05

Which is crazy, cause you figure-

• 1:56:59Speaker 03

Don't you wanna go up in front of people?

• 1:57:01Speaker 05

Yeah, that's something, and you, and you wanna push yourself, like, I wanna make sure these jokes are, they go over wherever I'm at.

• 1:57:08Speaker 03

Yeah, and also, another, one thing that I think really taught me in the, in the black rooms is like, the, the black rooms, they were not there for you to try your little misdirection math problem.

• 1:57:21Speaker 03

Do you know what I mean? Like, like, the, like, the white, the white audience sometimes will entertain, they'll be like, "Oh, I see what you did there." Yeah, like, "Oh, I got it." And the black room's like, "Oh yeah, okay, good, whatever." "Oh, so you didn't kill him?"

• 1:57:34Speaker 03

"So I stabbed him." "Oh, I guess you stabbed him." You know, it was important that, like, you acknowledged that we're in this room. And I wanna go back to that moment where like Floyd comes back in. Floyd walks into your special taping.

• 1:57:47Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:57:47Speaker 03

Like, that's, you have to be present in the room. That's something I learned in the black rooms. You have to be present in the room. If you are not present, they immediately will just check out on you. They're like, "Are you gonna pretend I'm not here?" Emotion has to be real. You have to be present. Like, if something weird is happening, you have to call it out.

• 1:58:02Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:58:02Speaker 03

I think it's something that's really helped me in my career that I don't think I would've developed in the, the white rooms at all, or like, the, whatever you call them, the mainstream rooms. And it's like, because they'll give you a little bit of leeway. Like, you're like, the joke will go over, and you'll be like, "Oh, I guess that one didn't go over." And then they'll always be like, "All right, well, what's the next one?"

• 1:58:18Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:58:19Speaker 03

There's this like politeness that exists, right?

• 1:58:21Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:58:22Speaker 03

And, uh- But yeah, it's interesting. Like you, you developed this like really important tool for comedy, which is being able to stay present in the moment. Not every show is going to be polite where people are like, they waited two weeks to get, to get that ticket to go to the cellar and they're ready to go and they're waiting with their hands clasped like this.

• 1:58:40Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:58:40Speaker 03

You know, it's, yeah, I wish more, I wish more comics, especially when they're younger, would go into the black rooms. I think they'll learn a lot more.

• 1:58:47Speaker 05

I think I've only been to the cellar once.

• 1:58:49Speaker 03

Really? Do you, are you scared to do white rooms?

• 1:58:52Speaker 05

  No, not at all.

• 1:58:53Speaker 03

Do you remember the first time?

• 1:58:55Speaker 05

I'm begging, I literally, I keep begging my agent and he'll tell you this, get me in Salt Lake, please. I just want to go. I want to experience everything.

• 1:59:04Speaker 03

Yeah, because I don't think you wouldn't cross over.

• 1:59:06Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:59:07Speaker 03

Like, I think it'd be very easy, like.

• 1:59:08Speaker 05

This latest special, and it was on purpose and somebody would be like, don't listen to haters and stuff. Though the one on, on Mint right now, there's no race jokes. And that was a purposeful thing on my part.

• 1:59:21Speaker 03

But why, I don't think that.

• 1:59:22Speaker 05

There's not one mention at all. And I was just like, you know what? Because how, how this special came out was, the last special I had, um, Broken Family, we did that on Friday and I woke up Saturday morning and I went, I told my manager, I said, I think I have another hour. Did we get it last night? Because we did two shows. She was, yeah, we're clean. I go, I'm gonna do a different hour tonight. So we sat there at the coffee shop and we wrote down bullet points. And I just remember there was, there was 12 bullet points and it was like one or two words. And we taped it to the stage. So I could glance down and, because you didn't, I didn't want a choppy special if I was gonna try it. I needed the flow. So we did it in the flow of things and, um, and it, it came out good. And then when I wrote, I go, I looked, I said, look, there's no race jokes in this.

• 2:00:07Speaker 05

I was like laughing about it.

• 2:00:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:00:09Speaker 05

And then when I, when I saw it, I go, alright.

• 2:00:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:00:12Speaker 05

  I don't think, I don't think.

• 2:00:14Speaker 03

Again, I'm curious, you know, obviously I want it to be successful just because I love you, but like, I don't think that like. Staying away from race jokes would change any dynamic. I actually think going on pods and stuff will communicate to more people that at the end of the day, you're a storyteller. And like you-

• 2:00:30Speaker 05

Especially if you live at a drug dealer in LA.

• 2:00:32Speaker 03

White people are interested in that shit. White people watch The Wire. You know what I mean?

• 2:00:35Speaker 05

  Yeah, fact, fact, fact.

• 2:00:36Speaker 03

So to me, it's just about like an education process. You're a storyteller at the end of the day. White people probably seen you in these black spaces and then they might go, oh, maybe he's a comic for black people and not for me. White people are a little concerned about that shit. They want to watch black shit from afar. But they don't want to be in it a lot of times.

• 2:00:52Speaker 05

That's the reason why Roots was like the number one show on TV in the 70s when that miniseries came out. Because white people are like, I don't, I want to watch this shit.

• 2:01:01Speaker 03

They, no, who, the biggest consumer of hip hop music is white people, right? I mean, there's like, you know, population things that affect that as well. But no, I don't know.

• 2:01:09Speaker 05

I want to watch it on TV. I just, I don't know if I want to go to the concert or-

• 2:01:12Speaker 03

But there is a little, there is a little concern and also like, to defend white people sometimes, there also is like a shame. It's like, am I appropriating this? There's like, there's sometimes a slap on the wrist if white people do get too interested. They're like, oh, you're going to take this shit from us? Which I understand from black perspective as well, which is like, they have seen that happen. Like white people putting cornrows in and all of a sudden trying to make it some white shit. So I understand both sides of it. But like, there is a thing with white people. It's like, they want to like comfortably watch something that they have nothing to do with. They really are, white people are really interested in that kind of shit. But um, but I think the stories that you tell, especially the ones from today, like I, my assumption is that people are going to love this. And they're going to be like, I want to go check out Gary. Is like, that what the standup is like? So I'm very-

• 2:01:53Speaker 05

  Oh yeah, it's way better.

• 2:01:58Speaker 05

  I do coke on stage.

• 2:02:01Speaker 05

Yeah, I stole a key from him. I do one line in his memory every fucking show, bro. Now you've been asleep since fucking February.

• 2:02:11Speaker 06

You gotta snort it for the homie sometimes.

• 2:02:14Speaker 05

Do you see how the coke came out of my system?

• 2:02:16Speaker 06

  For detoxing.

• 2:02:17Speaker 05

  This is crazy.

• 2:02:21Speaker 06

That wasn't lotion, it was blow.

• 2:02:24Speaker 05

Twenty minutes of this was rough. So what happened, dude?

• 2:02:27Speaker 06

  You were pouring.

• 2:02:27Speaker 05

Yeah, then it just stopped. That happened, that happened. That happened on Think Like a Man, the first one. Oh, my fucking god. The first time we all sat in the bar together and we're in the scene. I started leaking, just like I was on here, and I didn't know why. I'm not nervous, I'm amongst friends. I go, why the fuck am I sweating? And I know my body, I'm like, just get adjusted, get adjusted. And then one of the producers go, Jesus Christ.

• 2:02:55Speaker 05

That didn't help, bro. Cause I'm doing the same thing, like, I know, do they see it?

• 2:03:03Speaker 05

I don't think they see it, I go, cause everybody's just doing their shit, nobody's acknowledging, none of the actors. And as soon as that producer go, Jesus Christ. Then the fun's gonna open. Dude, this guy's like Samuel Jackson in A Time to Kill.

• 2:03:17Speaker 05

They kept calling me Sweaty Jackson the whole shoot, I go, what the fuck, bro? Then I leaned up and it looked like I got shot. It was just sweating in the back. But, you gotta realize, it wasn't, it was warm, it was July, we were in a bar, and they had to shut off the AC, and then they shut off the fans, so as soon as they say we're ready to roll, it just went up like twenty degrees. And my body just takes a minute to adjust. I was fine the rest of the day. We were in that, we were in that booth all day, but that first thirty minutes was like this shit.

• 2:03:48Speaker 06

  Yeah, yeah. You're good now.

• 2:03:49Speaker 05

  That goddamn producer? Jesus Christ.

• 2:03:55Speaker 05

You don't wanna do that in fucking Kev's right there. It was attack mode right there.

• 2:04:00Speaker 06

I've been there. Can I ask a question, sort of based on that? You were in Daddy Daycare. What was it like, meeting Eddie Murphy for that movie? That's like, one of my weirdly favorite movies from childhood.

• 2:04:10Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:04:11Speaker 06

  So I wanted to ask.

• 2:04:12Speaker 05

Daddy Daycare is weird how it came about. I was, I was preparing all week for an audition for an Eddie Griffey movie called My Baby Daddy. So they called me in the morning and they go, hey, we got an audition like an hour for this Eddie Murphy movie called Daddy Daycare. And I go, no, no, it's Eddie Griffin. They go, Eddie Murphy. I said, Eddie Griffin. It's at three o'clock. I'm arguing with this lady that's not my agent on the phone. They go, Gary, you have an audition like an hour for this movie with Eddie Murphy. We know about the other. I go, oh, really? So I drive to the Fox lot. I go in, it was one line. That's why I didn't have to really prepare. It was, hey, boys, we got a brand new cereal, veggie, those boys and girls. So I'm looking at it and I go, what the fuck am I gonna do with this?

• 2:04:56Speaker 05

And they, I was, it was all the kids was auditioning that day. So the, the whole, the waiting room was all these kids. So when I walked in, I said, hey, can I ask this mom, can I bring your son into the audition? So I walked this kid in, he has no idea who I am. And I read for some dad first and they said, I read, read for the carrot and the broccoli. So I grabbed the kid and I sat him down and I started snaking around him and started dancing. And that's when I did the, the B R O C C O L I. I just made that up in the audition room and that's the only audition where I, they go, you got it.

• 2:05:29Speaker 06

  Really?

• 2:05:29Speaker 05

So I did the song. They said, you got it. And I go, oh, no fucking way. I just got it.

• 2:05:34Speaker 06

In the moment, you got it?

• 2:05:35Speaker 05

Yeah, like they were like, you got it. They was like, Steve Carr was like, bro, where are you from? Why don't I know you? He goes, you just killed that shit. He goes, you're good.

• 2:05:44Speaker 06

This never happens, by the way.

• 2:05:45Speaker 05

And I've never had that happen.

• 2:05:46Speaker 06

I've never heard a story where someone just gives someone the role. Usually you have to get producers approvals in the studio.

• 2:05:52Speaker 05

With the producers. I skipped all the other steps. I was in with everybody. The director, producers was there.

• 2:05:58Speaker 06

  Yeah, okay.

• 2:05:58Speaker 05

So they, they tell me I got it. Great. Then we go to shoot. Eddie doesn't go to the table reads. Eddie's not at blocking. Eddie's not at another rehearsal. So the first time I see him, I'm in this fucking carrot outfit.

• 2:06:11Speaker 05

Comes around the corner and I'm literally this close to his face. And I'm just like, and at first I got stunned. I go, fuck Eddie Murphy.

• 2:06:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:06:20Speaker 05

I'm looking like, that's his nose. He ain't got lotion in his ears. I'm looking at all his features like this close. And then he goes, hey, man, I didn't know you were in this. He that's me up.

• 2:06:31Speaker 03

Wow, he knows who you are.

• 2:06:32Speaker 05

Yeah, and I go, whoa. And he goes, I love that joke. I heard you know stand up.

• 2:06:36Speaker 03

  He, yeah, apparently.

• 2:06:36Speaker 05

He said, I love that joke about Eminem and Tiger Woods. And that was the time, he don't, I never knew if he was at the Comedy Store or not. Right? He'd just sit in the back. So this bit was not on TV. So clearly he saw the Comedy Store.

• 2:06:49Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 2:06:49Speaker 05

That was the time when I said, the world's upside down because the number one golfer's black, the number one rapper's white.

• 2:06:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:06:55Speaker 05

  Basically joke.

• 2:06:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:06:56Speaker 05

  But he knew it.

• 2:06:57Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:06:57Speaker 05

And then, so I was like, ah, it kind of felt validated a little bit.

• 2:07:00Speaker 03

  Uh, yeah.

• 2:07:01Speaker 05

And then, um, we go to do the scene where I'm supposed to do the song. I don't do the song. I'm scared now because Eddie's there, right? So I just start doing it. Hey, boys and girls, you got a brand new cereal, videos, and the director goes, cut. He goes, where's the fucking song? And I go, what do you mean? He goes, the song, the B R O C L I. I go, oh, I know if you want it. He goes, that's how you got the part. So I go, oh, so do the song, right? B R O C C O L I. I am the broccoli and don't know why.

• 2:07:33Speaker 03

Is Eddie in the room while you're filming the scene?

• 2:07:35Speaker 05

Uh, he's on the other side of that glass thing. I don't know if he's there or not. I don't know.

• 2:07:39Speaker 03

  Got it, got it.

• 2:07:39Speaker 05

  It's a different room.

• 2:07:40Speaker 03

  Great movie.

• 2:07:41Speaker 05

But we go, we go to the premiere and they blocked off all this shit in Westwood. They had like a kids carnival and stuff. It was dope. Then Eddie was being so cool that day and there was a line of people to get pictures with Eddie.

• 2:07:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:07:55Speaker 05

I'm literally next. There was a fucking comic that wasn't in the movie. He was just an aggravating guy, like. Every time you saw him around town, he's just aggravating. He goes up to Eddie right before I'm gonna get a picture with him.

• 2:08:07Speaker 03

  Oh, Jesus.

• 2:08:07Speaker 05

And he grabs him and he grabbed my back of his hand.

• 2:08:10Speaker 03

  Oh, God.

• 2:08:11Speaker 05

And you could tell he was in his ear going, "Motherfucker, you inspiration? You wanna do this shit?" But Eddie was like, "Bitch."

• 2:08:16Speaker 03

  Get away.

• 2:08:16Speaker 05

Like, "I got a line." Huh?

• 2:08:19Speaker 07

Yeah, if you're Eddie, you're just like, "Who are you?"

• 2:08:21Speaker 05

Yeah, I got a line. I go, "I'm not next."

• 2:08:23Speaker 07

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:08:24Speaker 05

He's just fucking... Eddie was gone five minutes later.

• 2:08:26Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 2:08:26Speaker 05

He just left the whole party. I go, "Dude, fucked it up." I still have a picture with him this day.

• 2:08:30Speaker 07

  It's another Kobe guy, dude.

• 2:08:31Speaker 05

Yeah, another Kobe guy went his back. He didn't touch him. This motherfucker touched him.

• 2:08:35Speaker 07

The back of the head is crazy.

• 2:08:36Speaker 05

Back of the head and was like, oh, in his ear, like, "Motherfucker." I could... And you could tell what he was saying, you know?

• 2:08:41Speaker 03

He did it... I think Eddie did everything right. I think there's a lot of times, like, comedians look at Eddie and they're like, "Oh, why don't you get back on stage? Everybody wants to see you on stage." Or, "Eddie, why aren't you doing this? Eddie, why aren't you doing that?" Why... For me, I look at Eddie and I'm like, okay, he has a huge compound where his entire family can live on it. He has all these kids. He wants to spend time with his kids. And then, for a day job, he goes and makes a movie for 10 or 20 million dollars. And it's only in, like, the comedian's mindset where we're so yearning for more. We're never satisfied, that we look at Eddie Murphy's career and go, "Why doesn't he still do it?"

• 2:09:17Speaker 05

  Yeah, no shit.

• 2:09:18Speaker 03

No, no, he figured it out.

• 2:09:19Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:09:19Speaker 03

He did it all, and now he gets to hang out with his family, which is what we should fucking do.

• 2:09:23Speaker 05

That's who Shannon Sharp should call. That's how you fuck white women.

• 2:09:29Speaker 05

And don't get any scandals. Eddie Murphy does it better than anybody. Shannon, call Eddie, baby.

• 2:09:38Speaker 05

He's popping them mixed bags down. Nobody's paying attention to the coffee bean. Fucking wig. With the new blonde. I'm like, this guy's the best.

• 2:09:46Speaker 03

  He figured it out.

• 2:09:46Speaker 05

  Yeah, he figured it out.

• 2:09:48Speaker 03

  Yep, Shannon, call him.

• 2:09:50Speaker 05

  Call him, Shannon.

• 2:09:51Speaker 03

  What the fuck?

• 2:09:52Speaker 07

  Poor Shannon.

• 2:09:53Speaker 03

What do you think... How do you think Shannon comes back from this?

• 2:09:56Speaker 05

I mean, I think he'll be all right.

• 2:09:58Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:09:58Speaker 05

  If nothing...

• 2:09:59Speaker 07

Did he lose that bag though?

• 2:10:00Speaker 05

  Text messages, huh?

• 2:10:01Speaker 07

Did he lose that bag? 100 million, apparently, is on the table.

• 2:10:03Speaker 05

  I don't think he's gonna lose it.

• 2:10:04Speaker 03

  I... Yeah.

• 2:10:06Speaker 05

It's... They did something behind closed doors. They... From what I know, the texts, they were just into some wild shit.

• 2:10:12Speaker 03

Yeah, and you're allowed to be into wild shit.

• 2:10:14Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 2:10:14Speaker 03

The thing... The weird thing is that a lot of people seem to be almost... Hoping that it happened. That's the thing that I never like.

• 2:10:21Speaker 05

  Nah, I like Shannon.

• 2:10:23Speaker 03

I like Shannon and like an accusation is an accusation. At the end of the day, it's like innocence will prove guilty. So this is an innocent man and you want to hope that these things didn't happen. We should all want her to be lying.

• 2:10:34Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:10:34Speaker 03

Because if she's lying, that means a woman wasn't assaulted. We should all hope.

• 2:10:38Speaker 05

  Right.

• 2:10:39Speaker 03

Women are not assaulted. Yeah. Right? Like that should be where our minds are at least.

• 2:10:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:10:43Speaker 03

He is an innocent man right now. And if the girl's not doing a criminal suit, she's just suing for money. I'm a little suspicious.

• 2:10:50Speaker 05

Especially anybody's, everyone on this podcast, it had to benefit you.

• 2:10:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:10:56Speaker 05

You know what I mean? So it's like, how do you, I want to go back.

• 2:10:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:11:00Speaker 05

  You know what I mean?

• 2:11:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:11:01Speaker 05

I want, I want guys like that that are giving comics like platforms.

• 2:11:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:11:05Speaker 05

I want those guys to maintain a clean image.

• 2:11:07Speaker 03

You're a psycho. You want that girl to not have been for you.

• 2:11:14Speaker 05

That's my way to look at it.

• 2:11:15Speaker 03

Listen, man, you're fucking up the bag, bitch. I've never heard that before. You're fucking up my bag, bitch. My numbers went through the roof after I got on the show, dude.

• 2:11:26Speaker 03

What are you talking about? My guy went to P. Skill New York, crushed. I never had a P. Skill in my life.

• 2:11:34Speaker 05

But I did have a lot of people like, though, more, and they haven't done in the last like two years. It was, people will come up at the meet and greets and saying, like, saw the Shea Shea interview.

• 2:11:44Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 2:11:45Speaker 05

Really? It benefits. I mean, I'm sure they saw my other shit, but that's the first thing that comes out of their mouth.

• 2:11:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:11:50Speaker 05

  You know what I mean?

• 2:11:51Speaker 03

I mean, you crushed that one. That was really funny.

• 2:11:52Speaker 06

It was a good one. The confidence from Shannon in his, in his video saying, drop the tape. Did you see it?

• 2:11:58Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:11:59Speaker 06

  He goes, drop, drop.

• 2:12:00Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 2:12:01Speaker 03

  I need a preview that.

• 2:12:03Speaker 06

  Some edits.

• 2:12:03Speaker 05

I was thinking that the 30 seconds are gonna drop. I'm like this, the fact that you want 10 out there?

• 2:12:08Speaker 03

Crazy. You got a strong set.

• 2:12:11Speaker 05

  That's worse.

• 2:12:13Speaker 05

  You edited that wrong.

• 2:12:17Speaker 06

Bro, dropping the tape is crazy.

• 2:12:19Speaker 05

I think we should all learn, don't film yourself.

• 2:12:21Speaker 06

  Yo, what?

• 2:12:22Speaker 05

  Don't film yourself fucking.

• 2:12:23Speaker 06

That is the thing, yeah, just put it on Instagram live.

• 2:12:25Speaker 05

I don't have the time. I don't have the wherewithal.

• 2:12:28Speaker 06

  Yeah, I have no idea.

• 2:12:29Speaker 05

  What's about to happen?

• 2:12:29Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:12:30Speaker 05

  You know what I mean?

• 2:12:30Speaker 06

That's a different level of confidence, though.

• 2:12:33Speaker 05

  To film it?

• 2:12:33Speaker 06

To film it and want it out. Cause usually you film something, you watch yourself, you're like, oh man, I look way different in my head.

• 2:12:40Speaker 05

Oh my god. Your body is like, whoa! I gotta do some squats.

• 2:12:45Speaker 06

  Your hair there?

• 2:12:50Speaker 06

I need to trim my armpits. What the fuck is going on over here? Yeah, he said, drop the tape. Yeah, bro.

• 2:12:56Speaker 05

Damn, well, we don't all look like shit.

• 2:12:58Speaker 06

That's a good point. Yeah, he's small. Yeah.

• 2:13:01Speaker 05

  That's a big motherfucker.

• 2:13:03Speaker 06

Yeah. You think you have a good set and you listen back to it, you're like, oh, I kinda bombed. You know what I mean? Like, that's how I feel like the tape would go. I'd be like, yo, drop it, then you see it and you're like, nah, scrub it.

• 2:13:13Speaker 06

Well, yeah, free Shannon, man. I hope, I hope he's okay.

• 2:13:16Speaker 07

Yeah, cause I need to get on Club Shea Shea, so.

• 2:13:21Speaker 06

  Is he still doing eps?

• 2:13:22Speaker 07

  Uh, no, I don't, I don't imagine.

• 2:13:23Speaker 06

He's still doing nightcap. I think he's still doing his stuff, he's just not doing the ESPN stuff.

• 2:13:27Speaker 05

Right, he dropped on, I mean, obviously it was tape, but he dropped on Terrence Crawford and somebody else and saw this shit came out, so. Episodes are still dropping.

• 2:13:35Speaker 06

Yeah. What do you think about, what do you think about Kanye's new song, man? Are you, uh, did you listen to that at all?

• 2:13:41Speaker 05

  Mm-mm.

• 2:13:41Speaker 06

  No?

• 2:13:43Speaker 05

  Don't know any lyric.

• 2:13:48Speaker 06

I mean, it's on, it's on Twitter and it's, uh, I think it's- Some of the cousin shit? Oh, what is that one? Something about his cousin. Fucked his cousin or some shit? I think it was, there was, uh, he was giving fellatio to his cousin, I think that was the one, yeah. Like blood cousin?

• 2:14:05Speaker 05

  Yo, that's a good point. That's a cousin.

• 2:14:07Speaker 06

Yeah. That's a great point, is it blood? Not that it matter, it shouldn't-

• 2:14:11Speaker 05

  That does matter.

• 2:14:12Speaker 06

  Well, yeah, it does.

• 2:14:13Speaker 05

Your mom can't be sisters with-

• 2:14:16Speaker 07

Also minorities just call friends cousins sometimes.

• 2:14:18Speaker 06

Yeah, no, again, that's the point he's making, but-

• 2:14:20Speaker 07

It gets really aggravated by it.

• 2:14:21Speaker 06

A bunch, a bunch of us were assuming that it was blood cousin, but you're right, it could just be a friend of his and they were just sucking each other's dicks at a young age.

• 2:14:28Speaker 07

  Which is great friendship.

• 2:14:29Speaker 06

It's still odd. That is odd. That is odd. Yeah, there's- That, that is, are we gonna listen to it? And some shit, you just take it to the grave.

• 2:14:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:14:39Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 2:14:40Speaker 05

Like Kanye should watch this interview and realize, I was, I was very careful.

• 2:14:43Speaker 07

Yeah, like you didn't say his name the entire interview.

• 2:14:46Speaker 05

Yeah, and it was tough. A couple of times it almost came out.

• 2:14:48Speaker 07

  Really?

• 2:14:49Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 2:14:49Speaker 07

Yeah. So, hanging with my cousin reading dirty magazines.

• 2:14:56Speaker 07

  Alright.

• 2:14:57Speaker 05

  That's enough.

• 2:14:57Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 2:14:59Speaker 06

I got the gist of it. I didn't see him mean it. Someone said, uh, Kanye got his jaw wired shut so he'd stop sucking his cousin's dick.

• 2:15:10Speaker 05

Here's a crazy story about Kanye was like, before the, the song came out through the wire, I was in, it was a long time, I was in Brooklyn, and I was at some like, little house party thing. There was like thirty people there, and somebody that had something to do with that video, put it on the TV. I didn't know what the fuck it was. I didn't know who he was. And they go, yeah, this dude's gonna blow, man. Literally.

• 2:15:31Speaker 05

You get that guy's about, he goes, and it was like some videographer that was helping him with the video. And then it was like, fucking six months later. He was through the roof. And the only reason I remembered it is because he had D-Ray in the video.

• 2:15:43Speaker 07

  Oh, that's right.

• 2:15:43Speaker 05

And D-Ray's riding. So when I watched it, I go, I go, is that fucking D-Ray? And it's only I remembered it because it wouldn't have resonated, and I wouldn't have put two and two together. But he showed me it like, right before he blew.

• 2:15:54Speaker 06

Yeah, it was like the arm in the sling joke or something. He was like doing a joke with him.

• 2:15:57Speaker 05

Yeah. And then, I'll tell you another crazy story, Eminem's story. His second video is called Role Models. So I'm in it, but I'm basically an extra. But I wasn't an extra when we recorded it. I was in that bitch. So Philip Atwell directed all Dr. Dre's videos. Somehow he got wind of me, and was like, yo. Calls me out of left field, yo, we got this new rapper, man. Some city went out yet. I had no idea who he was. He had, we got this white rapper out of Detroit, man. He's, you know, he's got this shit coming out. He goes, we're about to do this video, man. We need somebody to make it funny and punch up a little bit with us. So I go down to this hangar in Santa Monica, and we shoot, and I don't know who he is, right? And no, nobody does.

• 2:16:40Speaker 07

You gotta, you gotta be twenty, early twenties at this point, right?

• 2:16:44Speaker 05

This is right when I'm on BET and shit. Right when I got on there. So I go to the video. If you pull up Role Models, I'm an, I'm an extra in the background. I'm a cop in the background.

• 2:16:53Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 2:16:53Speaker 05

Think I've seen. Yeah, it didn't pop like the other ones. Where's he's in a.

• 2:16:58Speaker 06

  That's me.

• 2:17:00Speaker 05

  There I am.

• 2:17:01Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 2:17:03Speaker 05

And then so in the video, they had they go, hey, where this guy's getting busted with weed and what are you guys gonna do? And so I went to craft services and I had cookies in my pocket, right? So we're supposed to arrest them. And then there was, we were laying on top of the cop car. And the scene was, you think we're arresting them? And then the three of us are all getting high together on top of the cop car. So we're looking up at the sky and it's me, the criminal, and then Eminem. So they passed the weed and after they passed the joint, I pulled the cookies out of my pocket. And I passed them there and it went over well, everybody ate the cookies. And then when the video came out, I go, damn, they took the cookie part out?

• 2:17:43Speaker 06

Did Eminem hit you after you did the?

• 2:17:45Speaker 05

No, we didn't know each other.

• 2:17:46Speaker 06

But even after the joke with Eminem and Tiger?

• 2:17:48Speaker 05

No, no, no, no, no, no. And he didn't know me. I didn't know him.

• 2:17:51Speaker 06

Was he cool when you guys were on set? Was he nice? Funny?

• 2:17:54Speaker 05

He was just kinda, he was in the wild mode Eminem, right?

• 2:17:59Speaker 06

  Oh, really?

• 2:17:59Speaker 05

It was all new. He was just, he was cutting up with his boys and shit. I remember Dre was there. I remember Dre just kept, after we got done, she goes, man, you two together, that'd be some shit. That'd be some shit, you two together.

• 2:18:12Speaker 06

And Dre knew of you at the time, for sure.

• 2:18:13Speaker 05

I guess. I don't know. But I was like this. I go, I go, yeah, I would, would. After the fucking Eminem video came out, I go, I hope they call me back one day. But yeah, that was kinda cool. It's like before it happened. You know what I mean? It's kinda cool to be there.

• 2:18:26Speaker 06

Whoa. Did we ever get to the bottom of who Kendrick was talking about? Oh, yeah. Was it, was he talking about you and then?

• 2:18:32Speaker 05

  No.

• 2:18:33Speaker 06

  Yeah, I feel like.

• 2:18:34Speaker 05

I ran with it. I go, fuck it.

• 2:18:37Speaker 05

Oh, and we're doing? They were like, you clown chase? I go, fucking, that's why we do stand up.

• 2:18:44Speaker 06

  For attention.

• 2:18:45Speaker 05

Fucking entertainment is clown, bitch. Nobody wants to be an anonymous comedian. You're so stupid. Oh, you clown chasing all fucking Kendrick? Duh. That's exactly why I did it. I didn't comment on Kumo D.

• 2:18:58Speaker 06

To, to his credit, you said in your latest special, there are no race jokes. So you did listen to him.

• 2:19:03Speaker 05

I did. This was before the song came out, though.

• 2:19:06Speaker 06

So that is the profound effect that he has on white comedians.

• 2:19:09Speaker 05

  There it is. I stopped.

• 2:19:10Speaker 06

  He stopped immediately. Cold turkey.

• 2:19:12Speaker 05

Dude, I'm so different now. Just kidding.

• 2:19:18Speaker 05

I learned. I'm gonna be like Mark Wahlberg.

• 2:19:25Speaker 05

Just get on the 430, protein shakes and doing no black shit no more.

• 2:19:34Speaker 05

Crazy thing about Mark Wahlberg, that's the first celebrity I ever saw. I was, I was, uh.

• 2:19:39Speaker 06

Was he living that entourage life?

• 2:19:40Speaker 05

There was, there was, it was Marky Mark. And I was in, I was in the Navy and I was, I was in Cincinnati and I was flying back to DC. And this was before nine 11, so you could go up to the gate and just hang out. Something I hang out with, my buddy is waiting to see me off and then like four black guys, huge black guys are walking on the plane, I go, the fuck? Who's coming off? And then Mark Wahlberg was in the middle of them. This one, he just had the, the Good Vibrations song, his only song. And then he, I just remember he was really short, his calves was huge. And I just remember it just popped out, I go, oh fuck, Marky Mark. Why I said that? I don't know. It just popped out, I go, Marky Mark. And then, but that was the first celeb.

• 2:20:22Speaker 06

  That you ever saw?

• 2:20:23Speaker 05

I ever saw in my life, 18 years old. I think he was doing a concert in Cincinnati that night, some summer series. But that was the first celeb I ever just saw.

• 2:20:30Speaker 06

Wow. At this point, are there any celebrities that come to the show that you might not be familiar with, but your kids are more excited that you met than you are?

• 2:20:38Speaker 05

Oh, that's a good one. That's a good, um, I'm thinking, uh. Damn, that's a really good question.

• 2:20:50Speaker 05

  I don't know.

• 2:20:51Speaker 06

Cause I've heard this happen where it's like, oh, like I met so and so. And my kids are going crazy because they, you know, oh, it's Mr. Beast. And you're like, who's Mr. Beast?

• 2:20:58Speaker 05

Bro, you never had a young kid come up to you like, dude, my dad is the biggest fan? All the time. All the time, brother.

• 2:21:04Speaker 06

That's a reality check right there, right?

• 2:21:07Speaker 05

I know all the coaches in NFL now.

• 2:21:10Speaker 05

And I know all the coaches and I'm older than them, like what the fuck happened? You know what I mean? Like, I'm cool with all the coaches now. Like, I don't know any players. Look at the players, I don't know what the fuck they do.

• 2:21:19Speaker 07

Yeah, I have a hard time, like, I used to really, like, hate a player, this and that. And now I'm like, this is a child.

• 2:21:23Speaker 05

  He's a child.

• 2:21:23Speaker 07

  This is a baby.

• 2:21:24Speaker 05

Yeah, facts. OJ came to my show when you were in Miami.

• 2:21:27Speaker 06

  No way.

• 2:21:28Speaker 05

OJ Simpson. And as soon as I started talking to him, I go, I get why people fuck with you.

• 2:21:32Speaker 06

  Why, why?

• 2:21:32Speaker 05

He is the most, he was the most charming person.

• 2:21:35Speaker 07

  Charming, yeah.

• 2:21:35Speaker 05

  I forgot, he murdered people.

• 2:21:37Speaker 06

  Sociopaths.

• 2:21:37Speaker 05

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:21:38Speaker 06

  Allegedly.

• 2:21:39Speaker 05

Allegedly. This is the coldest shit he did. I ain't never seen nobody do this. He came with two white girls.

• 2:21:43Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:21:44Speaker 05

  And a dude.

• 2:21:45Speaker 06

  Left with zero.

• 2:21:48Speaker 05

He tells the host, he goes, look. Host goes, they said, OJ's here. I said, you know, they bring me out to say hi to him. And then he goes, yo, give me a, let me know if you're gonna announce me that I'm in a room. Right? This is when the Coconut Grove Improv was upstairs.

• 2:22:02Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:22:03Speaker 05

And, uh, so the host goes, alright, I'm gonna tell this joke, and then I'm gonna say, OJ's in the room. Right? So he tells the joke. He goes, yeah, we got a big celebrity in the room tonight, OJ Simpson. This motherfucker moved seats and was sitting between two black girls.

• 2:22:15Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 2:22:16Speaker 05

He moved over, he stands up and goes, and the fucking crowd game is standing ov, right? And I was like, did that fucker move away from the white girl? And then as soon as he calmed down again, the motherfucker went back to the white girls in the back. And then afterwards, I'm sitting at the bar, he starts bullshitting for like 20 minutes. And the whole time, I just wanna be like, oh, motherfucker, did you do it? But he's just going, where you from, man? I was like, Cincinnati. Oh, motherfucker, that was the coldest game I ever played in my career. You know, I played in Buffalo. We were in Cincinnati, man. I said, man, I ain't never experienced cold like that. He just started talking about old football games and shit. I'm 20 minutes in, I went, man, this fucker, OJ Simpson. I'm just talking football there, I lost track of everything. I go, oh, this guy's good.

• 2:22:56Speaker 06

  He's good.

• 2:22:56Speaker 05

This guy's fucking good, man. I lived there like I liked him.

• 2:22:59Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:23:00Speaker 05

Alright, man, see you later, man.

• 2:23:01Speaker 07

In that documentary, they were saying when he would, like, beat him to cold, cops would get called over there, and then they just end up being friends with OJ.

• 2:23:06Speaker 05

  I can see why.

• 2:23:07Speaker 07

And just be like, you know what? Hey.

• 2:23:09Speaker 05

I completely experienced that side of it.

• 2:23:11Speaker 07

  Wow.

• 2:23:12Speaker 05

  Yep, I can see why.

• 2:23:13Speaker 06

  So he trained you?

• 2:23:14Speaker 05

  Completely.

• 2:23:15Speaker 07

  Sociopath, dude, yeah.

• 2:23:16Speaker 05

Completely charmed me, bro. I was like, I'm sitting there talking about Bengal shit and shit, you know what I mean? You like Carson Palmer? I think he's pretty good.

• 2:23:25Speaker 05

  You know, this regular shit.

• 2:23:27Speaker 06

Wow, I'm curious, like, people always talk about how comedy changed from like, late 90s into the 2000s. And today, obviously, is very different. In your experience with your audience, have you felt the same change?

• 2:23:37Speaker 05

You just grow with your audience.

• 2:23:38Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 2:23:39Speaker 05

  You just grow with them.

• 2:23:39Speaker 06

  So it's the same.

• 2:23:40Speaker 03

How do you feel like the audience has grown or changed? Or you have grown and changed?

• 2:23:46Speaker 05

You know, I found, like, yeah, I know we do, I, we talk about me being big with the black community, but a lot of military come out, too. A lot of ex-military come out, because I get that a lot. You get the coins.

• 2:23:56Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:23:57Speaker 05

Or you get like, dude, you know, they saw a joke where someone might be military police and shit like that. So I get that a lot. So I would say, as far as like, what I've noticed, a lot of ex-military be coming out.

• 2:24:09Speaker 03

You've had your audience for decades. There was a time, which I don't think is, is, is currently happening, where like, there's a little more sensitivity around comedy. But when you have your own audience, they understand you. So you don't feel like you have to change your jokes at all, right?

• 2:24:24Speaker 05

Well, you broke it down. I think you, Shane Gillis, um, guys like you, you just kinda, you kinda paved the way a little bit, showing like, look, I'm gonna, I'm gonna just do me. If you wanna be offended, that's on you. I'm gonna do me. So I got, I got a little bit of heat with the special needs community back in 2016. It's the only time I, I felt like I backed down. I was really upset about it.

• 2:24:46Speaker 03

What was that joke? What was the joke again?

• 2:24:47Speaker 05

I had, I got a special needs cousin named Tina, and she got an STD.

• 2:24:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:24:52Speaker 05

And when I, when the whole family was like, Tina got STD, I was like, Tina's fucking? That was the, to me, that was the bigger deal. I was so happy she was getting it. I'm like, all right, she ain't missing out. You know what I mean? I was so excited for her. But in my, in my special, I said the word retarded. I didn't say special needs. I didn't get the email blast.

• 2:25:12Speaker 03

Oh, it was just for saying retarded?

• 2:25:14Speaker 05

  Yeah, saying the word.

• 2:25:15Speaker 03

  Which, yeah.

• 2:25:16Speaker 05

That's all it was. Had nothing to do with the joke.

• 2:25:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:25:18Speaker 05

And then, um, they, um, they came after me to the point where I had just got my reality show, Greenlit, on BET. They were threatening to go after sponsors like McDonald's and shit like that. We're gonna tell them not to run ads. They, basically, they were like, we're gonna go after you for your TV show.

• 2:25:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:25:38Speaker 05

So I had to literally fly to DC and meet with four special needs people that were telling me how to write my jokes.

• 2:25:44Speaker 03

And what did they say? How did they say it?

• 2:25:47Speaker 05

And they made sure they had the gamut, bro. They had a black woman, a black man, a white woman, a white man. And it was the whole gamut. It was, it was MS. It was the guy that looked like Corky from Life Goes On. It was the lady that you couldn't tell. They made sure I was cooked. When that motherfucker told me, I said, well, what am I supposed to do?

• 2:26:15Speaker 03

And what did they say? Like, what were they saying?

• 2:26:17Speaker 05

I said, well, what's funny? Okay. Wait, you said this? You say this? And I was like this. What? I go, what's that?

• 2:26:34Speaker 03

  So you learned your lesson?

• 2:26:35Speaker 05

No. Literally, you can look it up. Pull it up. Pull up Gary meets with the special Olympics people. Last week, we were the darlings of liberal media. This week, Gary's doing retart impressions. Welcome to the program, everybody. This is what Harry does. This is what God does. They're good at celebs. I'm good at special needs.

• 2:26:57Speaker 03

So there you go. You're just telling us a story. So they're telling you how to tell the joke to make it more.

• 2:27:02Speaker 05

I told them, I said, I don't blame these four people. They all had people behind them that were like, they're people. I said, I blame you. I said, you don't want them to be made fun of, which to me says I'm better than you. If I don't make fun of you, I feel sorry for you. If I make fun of you, we're the same. Make fun of me.

• 2:27:20Speaker 03

  I agree.

• 2:27:22Speaker 05

They would, literally, they couldn't fathom, you know, blah, blah, blah.

• 2:27:26Speaker 03

And I think a lot of times, if protective parents or loved ones, and they just, they see somebody who obviously is going through something very difficult, and they're like, I just want to protect them from the evils of the world, without realizing that maybe they would laugh at it as well.

• 2:27:38Speaker 05

  That part.

• 2:27:38Speaker 03

I think that's one of the beautiful things of the Love on the Spectrum show, to be honest. I don't know if you've seen it, which is like, they showcase how funny they are, intentionally and unintentionally, and they show the family also laughing, and it gives you this kind of like, freedom to be like, hey, okay, as long as we're not bullying these people.

• 2:27:53Speaker 05

  It's funny.

• 2:27:54Speaker 03

It's funny. They do funny shit.

• 2:27:55Speaker 06

Showcasing the joy is like, the most beautiful part.

• 2:27:58Speaker 05

Yeah. I think the biggest issue, what I learned from it, was especially if you're a parent of a special needs kid, where do you direct your anger? If I was, I'm with my wife, and I didn't cheat.

• 2:28:14Speaker 05

I've been faithful to her. I have a good job. I've done everything right that you say you're supposed to do in life. And I now have a special needs child. Whom I'm mad at? I can't be mad at God. I can't be mad at the child. There's this comedian that's just told especially these jokes. So I'm mad at him. That's where my anger is directed. And that's, I think that's where it comes from. It's not, there it is. There's the four. Well, the one girl wouldn't get in the picture. But the little white dude told me how to tell my jokes.

• 2:28:41Speaker 03

  I need it.

• 2:28:44Speaker 05

All my, all my stories can be validated. I've told some doozies today, but none of them are lies. I'll tell you that.

• 2:28:50Speaker 03

Wow. So you there with George Wallace, Michelle Obama, Shane Gillis.

• 2:28:57Speaker 05

Sam Jay. George Wallace, Sam Jay and Korgy from Life Goes On. It was a fucking, it was a day. It was a day. Yeah, they flew me to DC.

• 2:29:10Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 2:29:11Speaker 05

And I had, and Showtime took it out of my special. They took that joke out. But it was too late, it was already out there.

• 2:29:16Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 2:29:17Speaker 07

Wow. That kid is adorable, to be honest.

• 2:29:19Speaker 05

And I literally was like, they was like, don't, you know, people were like, don't take it out. It's fucking art. I go, I go, bro. Nobody's gonna notice. It's already out there on the internet. If Showtime takes it off their website and their streamer. If it's gonna give my TV show, it is what it is.

• 2:29:34Speaker 03

So you were able to do the show because of it?

• 2:29:36Speaker 05

Yeah. That was the thing, cause Showtime had my back, I will say. But they was like, whatever you want us to do.

• 2:29:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:29:41Speaker 05

I said, sometimes we wanna fight just to win.

• 2:29:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:29:44Speaker 05

And sometimes I'm like, I was like, I don't give a shit. Here's, here's what I told them in the room. They didn't like this joke. I said, yo, it's 2016, that special came out in 2013, and you're calling them slow. Fuck you been, bitch? This special's been out for three years in May, you're mad? But they're the slow ones. You're the slow one.

• 2:30:05Speaker 03

And they're not even watching it. There's no way the three of them were watching this special.

• 2:30:09Speaker 05

No, that, it, one person watched it, made a blog or something. And then it just caught wildfire. There were actors, Tom Arnold kept DMing me, wanting to talk to me. I guess he has a special needs son.

• 2:30:19Speaker 03

  Oh, no.

• 2:30:20Speaker 05

There was another actor that I really liked. He's in all these action movies. I guess he's, and they, they just go on these rants and they just, you know. I'm going, oh my God, dude.

• 2:30:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:30:30Speaker 05

  You never saw the joke.

• 2:30:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:30:34Speaker 03

Gary, we love you, man. We appreciate you. Everybody go check out Men Comedy. Check out Gary's new special, No S.
