• 2:04Speaker 02

Hi, Tricia. Welcome to Conan O'Brien Needs a Fan.

• 2:07Speaker 03

  Hey, guys.

• 2:08Conan O'Brien?

  How are you?

• 2:09Speaker 03

I'm great. How are you guys?

• 2:11Conan O'Brien?

We are doing pretty well, I think. Yeah. But we are not the focus, Tricia. You are the focus. And, you know, people are sick of hearing about us. I want to know about you. I've been told, I believe that you're in Minnesota and that your name is Tricia, and that's all I know.

• 2:31Speaker 03

  Oh, really?

• 2:32Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 2:32Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 2:33Conan O'Brien?

So maybe you could fill us in about what you do, who you are, you know, likes, dislikes, the whole thing.

• 2:41Speaker 03

All right, the whole thing. Yeah, I'm in Monovideo, Minnesota, which is in the southwest corner of the state, on the prairie.

• 2:49Conan O'Brien?

  Okay.

• 2:50Speaker 03

So I've been here about seven years.

• 2:52Conan O'Brien?

  All right.

• 2:53Speaker 03

Moved here for my husband's job. Had no idea where this place was.

• 2:57Conan O'Brien?

Now, are you a native of Minnesota, then, in general?

• 3:01Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm from the, yeah, I'm from the North Shore of Minnesota, up by Lake Superior.

• 3:05Conan O'Brien?

  Yep.

• 3:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:06Conan O'Brien?

And so, does this feel like a come down for you? Like, oh, I gotta go down to the, to the prairie.

• 3:13Conan O'Brien?

I gotta go down to the prairie because of my husband. He's got a job on the prairie. Is that, was that your attitude?

• 3:21Speaker 03

  I was seven months pregnant.

• 3:23Speaker 02

Oh, my God. Are you guys homesteaders?

• 3:25Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 3:25Speaker 03

  No.

• 3:27Conan O'Brien?

Can you help me, can you help me raise a barn? I have a barn raising on, on, yeah. I also live on the prairie. It's sort of the prairie.

• 3:35Speaker 02

I need help pulling a dead buffalo out of a lake.

• 3:39Conan O'Brien?

I'll help you with that if you help me with my barn.

• 3:41Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 3:42Conan O'Brien?

Well, Tricia, I'm just curious. So what do you do? Yeah, I know you're a, you're a mom. You've got kids. What other things are you interested in?

• 3:52Speaker 03

Yeah, I work, I work remotely as an investigative crime reporter. I cover cold cases.

• 3:58Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, my God.

• 3:58Speaker 03

  In Minnesota.

• 3:59Conan O'Brien?

  That's fantastic.

• 4:00Speaker 03

  And the Dakotas.

• 4:01Conan O'Brien?

I, I, I'm fascinated. fascinated by this, uh, I'm fascinated by murder. So I think you're a big murder buff.

• 4:07Speaker 01

  I like murder.

• 4:08Speaker 02

Hey, hey, guys, I like murder too.

• 4:10Conan O'Brien?

  Hey.

• 4:11Speaker 01

  All right, girl.

• 4:12Conan O'Brien?

No, I like murder so much that I, uh, I'm, I would either like to murder or be murdered.

• 4:18Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 4:18Conan O'Brien?

I'm up for either one. It doesn't matter.

• 4:20Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 4:21Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 4:21Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 4:21Conan O'Brien?

I probably shouldn't put that out, though. That's a bad thing.

• 4:23Speaker 02

  Too late, too late.

• 4:24Conan O'Brien?

Oh, yeah, you're gonna, they'll replay that if something happens with an echo.

• 4:28Speaker 02

I will say, I got dibs.

• 4:29Conan O'Brien?

Okay, yeah, you got, I'll give you first crack.

• 4:31Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 4:32Conan O'Brien?

Um, that's you're an investigative crime reporter and your focus is cold cases. I love it. I love these stories. How far back do you go with a cold case usually?

• 4:43Speaker 03

Yeah, so the 1970s has kind of become my sweet spot, which is weird because I was born in the 80s.

• 4:49Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 4:49Speaker 03

But it was a really, it was, I mean, it was a decade of mayhem. You know?

• 4:55Conan O'Brien?

  I often think.

• 4:56Speaker 03

  Serial killers were.

• 4:56Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I like sometimes, you know, because there's, there are channels for music that just focus on, you know, like it's the 60s channel, or it's the 50s channel, like Sirius XM does that. The 70s one, it says 70s, decade of mayhem.

• 5:13Conan O'Brien?

But then they just play the Eagles and I think, yes, it was a time for killing. Um, uh, okay, so the, here's the thing. I think there were, that what's intriguing about the 70s is that they didn't have the DNA technology yet. And so people would just go missing and there wasn't a lot you could do about it. And so to me, it, it feels like a, a time of mystery when there's probably a lot of cold cases, right?

• 5:45Speaker 03

Yeah, exactly. I mean, and a lot of times two people just, they were considered to be runaways because like you said, there was no DNA technology. And especially if it was a young woman, it was just, oh, well, she went off, you know, hitchhiking to San Francisco.

• 6:00Speaker 01

  Ugh, bitches be hitchhiking.

• 6:02Speaker 02

  Sorry, what?

• 6:03Speaker 01

What? I said, "Bitches be hitchhiking."

• 6:05Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, that felt like, that felt like the right time to drop in a joke.

• 6:08Speaker 02

This woman's trying to solve cold murder cases.

• 6:11Conan O'Brien?

These are, these are young women that went missing and you decide, "Here's my joke opportunity."

• 6:14Speaker 01

All I'm saying is, "Bitches be hitchhiking."

• 6:18Conan O'Brien?

Tricia, I'd like to apologize, because I think what you're doing is valuable, and if you find someone, these people are in agony, because they're wondering what happened to their loved one. Sorry, Sona.

• 6:31Speaker 02

  I would like to-

• 6:32Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, you care now.

• 6:33Speaker 02

I would like to at least thank you for giving us the title of this episode.

• 6:36Speaker 03

I was gonna say, "Bitches be hitchin."

• 6:38Speaker 01

  Bitches be hitchin'.

• 6:40Conan O'Brien?

See, that would have been cool.

• 6:41Speaker 01

It didn't roll off the tongue when I said hitchhiking. That's why I stumbled a lot.

• 6:45Conan O'Brien?

That was really why I was upset. It wasn't that it was insensitive.

• 6:48Speaker 02

  Bitches be hitchin'. Got it.

• 6:51Conan O'Brien?

So, have you had success with this?

• 6:55Conan O'Brien?

I'll wait for the laughter to stop, and then say, "Have you had success finding the bodies of lost women in the 70s?" Jesus Christ.

• 7:05Speaker 03

Yeah, we have, actually. We've moved, um, well, we've moved at least two cases forward.

• 7:11Conan O'Brien?

  Mm-hmm.

• 7:12Speaker 03

Uh, one case, a gal from 1974, Belinda, uh, she went missing, and, you know, still hasn't been found, but there is a main suspect.

• 7:22Conan O'Brien?

  Oh.

• 7:22Speaker 03

And, um, they've reopened her case, and so we could be getting answers.

• 7:27Conan O'Brien?

Okay, let's talk about, because I'd like to help crack this case, uh, the main suspect. Have you spoken with the main suspect? Is the main suspect still alive?

• 7:36Speaker 03

Yeah, he's still alive. I have. I met with him for, for an hour. He's at, uh, a secure facility in northern Minnesota for dangerous sexual offenders.

• 7:48Conan O'Brien?

Oh, Jesus. Yeah, okay. And you went there, I mean, that's a creepy place to visit. Um, was it the kind of situation where he's behind a screen and you, or, or a, a clear plastic, and you pick up the phone, and he picks up the phone?

• 8:03Speaker 03

No, I wish, I wish that were the case, but no, so, you know, in those.

• 8:06Conan O'Brien?

It's disappointing. I love it when they pick up the phone and then they pick up the phone.

• 8:10Speaker 02

I want him to be in a little mask and he's on a dolly in a straitjacket, you know?

• 8:14Speaker 01

You talk to a guy who may have murdered someone in the 70s and you're like, what phone did you use?

• 8:19Conan O'Brien?

  Well, I just.

• 8:21Speaker 01

  How did you communicate?

• 8:22Conan O'Brien?

I just love it. It's always the same thing. One person picks up the phone and then points to it and the other person then begrudgingly picks up the phone as if it's not clear to pick up the fucking phone.

• 8:33Speaker 02

  Right.

• 8:33Conan O'Brien?

I mean, how else are you gonna talk? They always pick it up and point at it. I've seen that in 10,000 movies and I'm not wrong.

• 8:40Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's a good point.

• 8:43Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. Now I'm thinking about, and this is wrong, but now I'm thinking about when people visited serial killers at like 1910, 1910, 1911.

• 8:54Speaker 03

  Oh no.

• 8:55Conan O'Brien?

That one person picks up a candlestick phone and points to the other side of the window and the other person picks up the candlestick phone and they're like, hello, hello?

• 9:04Speaker 02

Look, I didn't do it, see?

• 9:05Conan O'Brien?

I didn't do it, see? And they have to still go through an operator?

• 9:08Speaker 02

She had it coming, bitches be hitchin'.

• 9:10Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. I want Wrigley 5025. Enid, can you put me through? Bitches be hitchin'. Hold on, please.

• 9:18Speaker 02

  Zing, zing, zing, zing, zing.

• 9:20Conan O'Brien?

  Okay, you know what, Trisha?

• 9:22Speaker 02

  You don't deserve this.

• 9:23Conan O'Brien?

  This is awful.

• 9:24Speaker 01

  This is so stupid.

• 9:24Conan O'Brien?

I hate us and all three of us are going to hell and I hope soon. I hope we go before we die, just so we can check it out. But Trisha, this is, I'm gonna pull this thing together, I know I can do it. What you're doing is very cool and valuable and you talk to this person and tell me what it was like to look into the eye. Do you think this person did it?

• 9:47Speaker 03

I mean, I have to, I'm not supposed to say, but yeah, I do think he did.

• 9:53Conan O'Brien?

You showed a lot of restraint there, Trisha. Well, I'm not suppo- yes, total murderer. So you look in this person's eyes, did this person have remorse, do you think?

• 10:04Speaker 03

Well, no. So he and I had been writing letters for quite a while and so that's how I.

• 10:11Speaker 02

  Unrelated to this?

• 10:12Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, this is, I was gonna say, I was gonna say they were pen pals before any of this came up. By the way, what are your hobbies? Ah, chilling in the seventies. Hey, maybe I could come by. Do they have a phone there and a plastic divider? I'll pick it up, but you don't pick it up right away and then I'll point to my phone. Tricia, I'm sorry. We're gonna get it back. We're gonna get it back. You know what? Can I just say this is Tricia's fault for calling us? Yeah, that's true. There are so many legitimate places to call.

• 10:40Speaker 02

Actually, could you pick up the phone?

• 10:42Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. Also, I said for calling us. She's on a Zoom. I'm sorry. Tricia, I will rein this in, I promise you. You started writing back and forth and then you decided to go. What made you want to go and meet with this alleged or possible killer in person?

• 11:02Speaker 03

So at that point, we knew, I'd been working with Belinda's family and we knew that he had been named the main suspect. And so we had obtained his police files from, he had three women who escaped from him.

• 11:17Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, God.

• 11:19Speaker 03

And yeah, I mean, like really bad stuff, like he abducted them at gunpoint and knife point and had a kill bag and, and all three of these women lived to tell what happened to them. And so, yeah, I think it was more so out of, obviously for the story because, you know, writing a story, writing a series about Belinda, you know, it was only natural to want to go and ask him some questions.

• 11:42Conan O'Brien?

  Yep, yep.

• 11:43Speaker 03

So, I mean, that's why I went there, not for kicks, but you know.

• 11:48Conan O'Brien?

No, you're a crime reporter. This is, despite everything we've done in this podcast, this is a real thing you're doing and it's very, it's invaluable and, and these are real victims and I cannot believe I'm transitioning us out of that laughing fit. But I have to and I hope that everyone listening understands that, that we're three sociopaths.

• 12:17Speaker 03

I was gonna say though, to make you guys feel better, like I laugh with the families all the time, like I feel like people have to have some sort of a dark sense of humor. So I think, I think it's all right, you know?

• 12:29Conan O'Brien?

Now, um, so you talked to this person, I,

• 12:34Conan O'Brien?

I'm curious because I have always had an interest in this subject. And I was always wondered how I would do interviewing somebody. You know what I mean? Would I be able to get any information out of them? Or would I just go on too many tang? What's your professional opinion of how I would fare? Would I go on too many like comedic tangents? Or they're be about to confess to the murder and I'd have a funny idea and start to describe it?

• 12:59Speaker 02

Are you thinking of having murderers on this podcast?

• 13:02Conan O'Brien?

Well, it's a big genre in podcasts. And if we can combine our humor with murder, we might be the biggest podcast in the entire world. I mean, I know we're close, but we're not there yet.

• 13:14Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I think number one rule is to make them feel comfortable. I think you would be really good at that. And, you know, making them laugh, doing some bits would, you know, get them feeling, you know, loose.

• 13:28Conan O'Brien?

Yep, that's key. That's key is get them laughing and get their trust. And then maybe they'll tell me something. I mean, I would, maybe I could come with you some point and just, that might be distracting. You know?

• 13:43Speaker 03

I think it'd be good. And I've, so I only do interviews by myself, but ideally you want to do it in a team because then you have like a good cop, bad cop, and then an observer.

• 13:53Conan O'Brien?

And a very silly cop. It's good cop, bad cop, like, we're gonna, I'm gonna, five minutes with you. I'm gonna beat your face in if you don't tell us what to do. Hey, man, I'm your friend. Yeah, and I'm here too. I'm goofy cop. There's good cop, bad cop, and goofy cop. Hey, look, I've got antlers on, they're made of foam.

• 14:24Conan O'Brien?

You know, winning an award, that's a big achievement, right? Yeah. Every now and then in life, maybe something nice like that comes your way. Winning them consistently is almost impossible. It just doesn't happen, you know? Well, guess what? Winning five times in six years? You know what that sounds like to me? Sustained excellence.

• 14:42Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 14:42Conan O'Brien?

Hyundai has done just that, earning the title of America's best SUV brand for 2026 from U.S. News and World Report. You are a very happy Hyundai driver.

• 14:50Speaker 01

I drive a Hyundai Palisade and I love my car. I love it. I love driving it around.

• 14:55Conan O'Brien?

I've been tooling around in an Ioniq 5N, which I love.

• 14:59Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 15:49Conan O'Brien?

Did you know that 1 in 4 Americans targeted by scams end up falling for them?

• 15:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 15:54Conan O'Brien?

  You fell for one.

• 15:55Speaker 01

  I fell for a scam?

• 15:56Conan O'Brien?

Now, you didn't lose too much money, but you did lose.

• 15:58Speaker 01

I did lose, and it was very inconvenient, and now they put protections on my account like I'm, uh, dumb.

• 16:04Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. I don't know where they got that impression.

• 16:08Conan O'Brien?

Criminals are now using AI to make scams look more realistic than ever. In 2025, AI fraud spiked 1,210% and cost Americans $893 million. That's incredible. Well, with AI, it can get so smart now.

• 16:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:25Conan O'Brien?

Do you know what I mean?

• 16:25Speaker 01

  Maybe I should start scamming.

• 16:27Conan O'Brien?

  No, that's not the point.

• 16:28Speaker 01

Oh, no, that's not the point of this.

• 16:29Conan O'Brien?

That's not the point. One accidental click, Sona can expose your information, putting you at risk of identity theft. Luckily, this is the point. Not that you should start scamming, but that everyone should get LifeLock.

• 16:40Speaker 01

  Right, right, right, right, right.

• 16:41Conan O'Brien?

LifeLock has live, U.S.-based restoration specialists who will be with you every step of the way to fix your identity theft, from First Alert To full restoration. This is fantastic. How do you not have this?

• 16:52Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 16:53Conan O'Brien?

If you have expenses or money stolen due to identity theft, you're backed by the million dollar protection package with up to $3 million coverage in some plans.

• 17:12Conan O'Brien?

This fall, I want to try something different.

• 17:14Speaker 01

  What?

• 17:14Conan O'Brien?

I like to change it up. I like to learn things. So I'm going to try and make apple cider.

• 17:18Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 17:18Conan O'Brien?

  Every morning.

• 17:19Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 17:20Conan O'Brien?

This fall, just to see if I can do it.

• 17:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:22Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, fall is the perfect season to try something new, like joining T-Mobile.

• 17:26Speaker 01

  Oh, that's good.

• 17:27Conan O'Brien?

  See what I did?

• 17:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:28Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, there are 250 reasons to join T-Mobile right now. You want to hear what they are?

• 17:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:32Conan O'Brien?

  They're America's best network.

• 17:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 17:34Conan O'Brien?

True story. Plus, T-Mobile has got off-grid satellite coverage. That comes in really handy. I like to just wander in the woods sometimes.

• 17:41Speaker 01

  Oh, that's weird.

• 17:41Conan O'Brien?

When I'm thinking about like making apple cider.

• 17:43Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 17:43Conan O'Brien?

And that's when it comes in handy. Here's another reason. High-speed data in over 215 countries and destinations. I travel a lot for the

• 17:51Speaker 01

  Travel a lot.

• 17:51Conan O'Brien?

  Travel show that I do.

• 17:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:53Conan O'Brien?

Stream this podcast while ignoring local landmarks. That's always fun to do. Like, oh, look, there's the Mona Lisa. Yeah, check it out. I'm in the Louvre. I should, but I'm listening to Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend.

• 18:03Speaker 01

That doesn't seem like a good idea.

• 18:04Conan O'Brien?

  It's a great idea.

• 18:05Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 18:44Conan O'Brien?

Ever invest in something that seemed incredible at first, but didn't live up to the hype?

• 18:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, like all the time.

• 18:49Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I did that with an all potato restaurant.

• 18:52Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 18:55Conan O'Brien?

Marketers know that feeling. They optimize for the numbers that look great, like impressions, but then they don't see revenue. You know what I'm talking about, don't you, Son?

• 19:04Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, all the time.

• 19:05Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, LinkedIn has a word for that: bull spend.

• 19:31Conan O'Brien?

I do think, I think I would be pretty good. And I'm fascinated, I am legitimately, all bits aside, fascinated by what you do. And I'm also noticing, I don't know if you've noticed this too, but there are couples, it's usually a couple or sometimes it's one person who've been missing since the 70s or sometimes the 80s. But a lot of times, it's the 70s or even the late 60s. It's this phenomenon that's come up now. And what happens is, there'll be a scuba diver in a lake and they find, they're like, "Hey, there's an old rusty car down there." Oh. And they dredge it up and it turns out that the person was driving home. And this is more common, these stories pop up in the news.

• 20:15Conan O'Brien?

One popped up like two days ago. It's a couple, I think that went missing in the 60s. And because more and more people are scuba diving in lakes to sort of poke around, they're finding cars that just, people were driving home and their car went into the water somewhere. They're going over, or their car went in and no one knew about it. And everyone assumed they're the victim of foul play. But that's a thing too, is just, there's, they're more and more finding people, obviously, the women that you're talking about were abducted, but I'm finding that to be kind of fascinating in this age of, there are like scuba sleuths out there, which is weird, but it's true.

• 21:00Speaker 03

Yeah, no, I've heard of that too. And then it's kind of sad too, because in a lot of those cases, there's like, someone who's accused of doing it was never convicted. And then, after all these years, they were just, you know, in an accident.

• 21:13Conan O'Brien?

Yes, they were in an accident on their way. It's always freaks me out. Like, how do you, how does your car go into a pond and nobody knew it? Nobody knew there was a crime scene, but that's happening more and more.

• 21:24Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 21:25Conan O'Brien?

There where they're finding things, just because things turn up. But obviously, these are people that were abducted. And if you, do you think, when you're talking to this person, and you interviewed them in jail,

• 21:41Conan O'Brien?

do you think this is someone who might be willing to confess? Or would you, if you went back, or if you repeatedly went back a couple of times? Because what, what would they have to lose at this point? Why not?

• 21:51Speaker 03

Yeah, exactly. I don't know. You know, it's kind of weird, because you think they're these masterminds, because they've, you know, gotten away with murder, or at least you think they have. But a lot of times, they're just kind of dopey, like that guy is just kind of, you know, kind of pathetic. At the same time, he doesn't strike me as someone who's going to just, you know, confess on his deathbed. But I think they're, you know, like, when you look at FBI professionals and their interrogation tactics, they're much smarter than I am. And I think, in that case, yeah, I think it could happen.

• 22:23Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. I'm amazed that you got into this. It sounds like you just got into this on your own. And, I mean, when you started, you started making this your beat as a crime reporter?

• 22:34Speaker 03

Well, well, no, I, I kind of fell into it, because, like I said, I moved here, I was taken here when I was seven months pregnant, and there's nowhere to work around here.

• 22:44Conan O'Brien?

You said I was taken here. Were you abducted?

• 22:47Speaker 02

No, I didn't want to say it.

• 22:49Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I'm gonna say, you were like, I was taken here when I was seven months pregnant, against my will to the prairie.

• 22:55Speaker 02

  Oh, no.

• 22:55Conan O'Brien?

Now I feel like we have to go rescue you.

• 22:59Conan O'Brien?

Is your husband in the crime business?

• 23:01Speaker 03

Uh, no, no, he's a physician.

• 23:03Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, working that angle, eh?

• 23:06Speaker 01

  Those are the best murderers.

• 23:07Conan O'Brien?

  Best murderers.

• 23:08Speaker 02

  Black Dahlia.

• 23:09Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, the physicians.

• 23:11Speaker 03

  They know where to hit.

• 23:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 23:12Conan O'Brien?

  Okay, Jesus.

• 23:14Speaker 02

  She's right there with us.

• 23:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, she gets it.

• 23:17Speaker 03

No, so I got into it because, um, yeah, I had three kids right in a row and it was, you know, I never intended on being a stay at home mom. God bless them. It's the hardest thing in the world. But when I was pregnant with my third, I was like, okay, I need to go back to work. And at that point, it was after COVID. So there were more remote opportunities.

• 23:37Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 23:37Speaker 03

So I was like, okay, let's look for a job for me.

• 23:40Conan O'Brien?

  I.

• 23:41Speaker 03

And then I found, um, that one and it was with a company I used to work for. So it, it just kinda happened that way.

• 23:47Conan O'Brien?

I completely, I mean, we completely support your decision because Sona had twins and offered to go back to work from the hospital.

• 23:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:56Conan O'Brien?

  You wanted to get away.

• 23:57Speaker 01

I was ready to go back.

• 23:57Conan O'Brien?

During labor. And she said, and she hasn't seen them since.

• 24:00Speaker 01

I don't know where they are.

• 24:01Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 24:02Speaker 01

No, I don't know where they are.

• 24:03Speaker 03

  I understand.

• 24:04Speaker 01

  I don't know what they're doing.

• 24:05Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, she said, you said you're willing to meet them when they graduate college.

• 24:09Speaker 01

I came here and I haven't left. I've just been in the studio.

• 24:13Speaker 03

Sona, how old are your twins? You have twins, right?

• 24:15Speaker 01

  They're three and a half.

• 24:16Speaker 03

Okay, I have a three and a half year old. So, yeah.

• 24:18Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 24:19Conan O'Brien?

  And.

• 24:19Speaker 03

  I can't imagine two.

• 24:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:21Conan O'Brien?

You had, but you had, you said you had three in a row. How quickly?

• 24:23Speaker 03

  Nineteen months apart.

• 24:25Speaker 01

  Fuck.

• 24:25Conan O'Brien?

  God.

• 24:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:27Conan O'Brien?

  Okay, Jesus, Sona.

• 24:29Speaker 03

Trying to move on to crime and murder.

• 24:31Conan O'Brien?

Uh, my parents, that's how, in my family, it's, there was a child born every four months.

• 24:39Conan O'Brien?

  For thirty, for thirty-five years.

• 24:43Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, we were high-fiving each other in the womb. Well, I gotta go, I'm shipping out, but I'll see you in a couple of months. They said it was a medical miracle.

• 24:53Speaker 01

And your mom went back to work too immediately.

• 24:55Conan O'Brien?

She went back to work as soon as she could.

• 24:57Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, I don't blame her.

• 24:58Conan O'Brien?

She went back to work. Yeah, she was a prizefighter.

• 25:02Conan O'Brien?

  Seventy-five knockouts.

• 25:05Conan O'Brien?

Never lost a fight. Well, this is fascinating. I'm really interested. I'm very interested in what you do, and I think it's incredibly cool that you're that you're doing this, and I wish you the best of luck. It is. I also find the 70s to be such an eerie time. You're familiar with the List case, right?

• 25:25Speaker 03

  What's that?

• 25:26Conan O'Brien?

The List case. It's a pretty famous case. It's a guy who The Stepfather, the movie The Stepfather was based on the List case. But it was John List. He lost his job, didn't want to tell his family. They were living in kind of a fancy house. He was trying to keep up appearances. And then he just decided to kill everybody and then disappear. And he went, he disappeared successfully for like 25 years. And they only found him because of America's Most Wanted, and they made a a recreation of what he would look like today. And someone said, I know that guy. And it turned out it was him. And I was a writer at Saturday Night Live at the time, and I went to the trial. The trial was in New Jersey.

• 26:08Conan O'Brien?

And I would drive in my 1973 Plymouth Valiant over to New Jersey when I wasn't working on sketches and just sit there and look at this guy. He had a big family, and he just waited for the kids to come home one by one and killed them.

• 26:23Speaker 01

  Jesus.

• 26:24Conan O'Brien?

Yeah. And then went and started a whole new life. And when they caught him, he was having financial trouble again. And they were theorizing he might have, if they hadn't caught him, done the same thing again.

• 26:35Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 26:35Conan O'Brien?

And his rationale was, mm, they're starting to, it's the 70s. They're starting to wear, my daughter's starting to wear a short skirt. The kids are, I, I'm gonna kill them so that they don't go to hell. I'll kill them now and they'll go to heaven. That was his rationale.

• 26:49Speaker 01

Okay. Probably a good time for murdering because there's no DNA stuff, right?

• 26:53Conan O'Brien?

No, exactly. I think it's And I agree with you.

• 26:56Speaker 01

  Golden age of murder.

• 26:57Conan O'Brien?

  I agree with you.

• 26:58Speaker 02

  Never see it again.

• 26:59Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 27:00Speaker 02

  It's not a shame.

• 27:01Conan O'Brien?

It's like the studio system. Oh, they made good movies then.

• 27:05Speaker 02

  Can't go home.

• 27:05Conan O'Brien?

  They

• 27:08Conan O'Brien?

I think, uh, I think you're right. I think it's, you made a really good point, which is, people think that if you get away with murder, you're a genius, but no, it's, it's a busy, crazy world out there. And as we saw with the Long Island killings, those were all, uh, sex workers. And sadly, they would go missing and the police would go like, eh, it's a sex worker. She's, God knows where she is. And they were treated as second-class citizens. And then, um, later on, it turned out that this serial killer was extremely prolific, sadly. And, uh, so you're right, there is, uh, it's not that this person's a genius. He, they were just preying on a section of society that, that was not, you know,

• 27:54Conan O'Brien?

held in the same regard, which is too bad.

• 27:57Speaker 03

Yeah, exactly. And it, and it's, I mean, it's kind of weird, obviously, to think about, just because most of us would get so much anxiety after killing someone. And it would show, you know, but very multi-just.

• 28:09Speaker 01

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 28:10Speaker 03

Go about, go about your day.

• 28:12Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, I think that my coworkers are pointing at me. They've seen me, make, do terrible bits, and then they see that I have no remorse.

• 28:21Speaker 01

  None at all.

• 28:22Conan O'Brien?

  Just none, and that.

• 28:24Speaker 02

And bits are worse than murder in many cases.

• 28:26Conan O'Brien?

In a way, you're, you're, my bits are, I'm murdering people's peace of mind around me. I'm killing people's sense of a, a good world that they live in with my bits. So in my own way, I've left a long trail behind me. I don't know, we dipped in and out of, this is a fascinating conversation because we've dipped in and out of laughter and then incredibly dark moments, and then back to laughter again, which shows that all, well, the three of us need to be jailed.

• 28:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, we do.

• 28:55Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, we need to be in some facility.

• 28:59Speaker 03

  I, no.

• 29:02Conan O'Brien?

Not convincing. You said that in such a Minnes- you said, also, you did that in such a Minnesota way. Ah, yeah, no, no. You've been on the prairie too long, Trisha. We gotta get you out of there.

• 29:14Speaker 03

  I know, I have.

• 29:17Conan O'Brien?

  Is your-

• 29:17Speaker 03

  No, it's, it's a great place.

• 29:18Conan O'Brien?

Is your physician husband out delivering a calf right now? What is he doing?

• 29:25Speaker 03

  A human baby.

• 29:26Conan O'Brien?

Oh, okay, all right. Yeah, okay, good.

• 29:27Speaker 03

  Marcel.

• 29:28Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 29:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:30Conan O'Brien?

Well, our best to him, and you seem like a very, uh, cool person, and, uh, very, uh, just really fascinating to talk to you, and thanks for listening to our nonsense. Did you have a question for me before we go?

• 29:45Speaker 03

Um, oh, well, my question, you kind of already answered, which would be, you know, well, actually, no, let me start over. What advice would you give me? Because you've obviously been known as one of the great interviewers of our country. What advice would you give me the next time I go in and interview a serial killer?

• 30:04Conan O'Brien?

I thought you were gonna say, what advice would you give to any killers out there? How to kill and kill again. I, you know, I, it's the same thing. I mean, I think we talked about it, but I do think it's all about getting rapport. And one way I try, I always try to find common ground with people, which is strange, because if you're talking to a prolific serial killer, it'd be weird. But I think I would try and go into it trying to liken what I do to what they do, so that we could have a feeling of rapport. Like, I've killed in front of an audience.

• 30:35Speaker 01

  Oh, boy, oh, boy.

• 30:36Conan O'Brien?

That's what I would do. I would try and find common ground. Or talk about the time I've murdered.

• 30:42Speaker 01

But he's, you're trying to get them to admit they murdered.

• 30:45Conan O'Brien?

  Yeah.

• 30:45Speaker 01

So you can't talk about, hey, we're both, we both kill, but in different ways.

• 30:49Conan O'Brien?

That's what you do. That's what most jailhouse confessions are, one criminal talking to another.

• 30:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 30:54Conan O'Brien?

That's what I think it is.

• 30:55Speaker 03

  I think it's a good strategy.

• 30:56Conan O'Brien?

Yeah, thank you very much, and you lose, Sona.

• 30:59Speaker 01

I want you to go undercover in prison and, like, befriend these people.

• 31:02Conan O'Brien?

Undercover in prison. Oh, that's gonna go well. That's gonna go really well. Hiya, fellas. I'm not Conan O'Brien. My name's Conrad O'Ryan.

• 31:15Conan O'Brien?

  Well, off to the showers!

• 31:22Conan O'Brien?

Tricia, have a wonderful day and really good luck to you. And I, uh, I hope that you're successful and, uh, and that you, you get some closure for these people. I really do.

• 31:34Speaker 03

Thank you so much. And I do want to say that, um, I listen to you guys all the time and laugh so hard.

• 31:39Conan O'Brien?

  Oh, good.

• 31:40Speaker 03

Appreciate it. Yeah, it helps when I'm doing the murder stuff.

• 31:45Conan O'Brien?

I like to laugh along with you and then go murder. So, same way. All right, you take care, Tricia. Bye-bye.

• 31:52Speaker 03

  Thanks, guys.

• 31:52Conan O'Brien?

  Bye.

• 31:52Speaker 03

  See ya.
