Lisa Kudrow

Lisa Kudrow (No Good Deed, Friends, The Comeback) is an award-winning actor and producer. Lisa joins the Armchair Expert to discuss her background as a pre-med biology student at Vassar, not being a people pleaser in the Groundlings, and how Jon Lovitz became her bridge to comedy. Lisa and Dax talk about why Conan O’Brien is the best person to bring to a dinner party, listening to the internal voice that told her to be an actress, and how pan au chocolate and a walk in the sun can be a cure for rejection. Lisa explains how home is the people you’re with, the fallacy of the healing power of fame, and why she’ll never be tired of talking about Friends. • 0:00Dax Shepard?

Ba da ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba ba. Dee dee dee. Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dax Shepard and I'm joined by miniature mouse.

• 0:10Speaker 01

  By Monica Geller.

• 0:11Dax Shepard?

How's this song go? Did I have it?

• 0:13Speaker 01

You can't trick me into singing. It's not really right, but it's close. It's close.

• 0:21Speaker 01

  Yeah. Our first friend.

• 0:23Dax Shepard?

  Just give me the words.

• 0:25Speaker 02

  I'll be there for you.

• 0:26Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 0:26Dax Shepard?

I'll be there for you, even my. What's the second part?

• 0:32Speaker 02

  That was it.

• 0:33Dax Shepard?

That was it. Oh my God, what's happening with you? Hearing the song come out of my mouth is very disruptive.

• 0:38Speaker 01

  Well, we're just.

• 0:39Dax Shepard?

  Disregulating.

• 0:43Dax Shepard?

  Da da da dee doo.

• 0:45Speaker 01

Okay, can we, can we please?

• 0:47Dax Shepard?

Friends. What have I done at some point? They scream friends in this.

• 0:52Speaker 01

Our first friend is here. This is very important. Maybe that's why I'm getting upset.

• 0:57Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you're getting nervous because it's such an honor and you're afraid I'm gonna anger our lovely guest, Lisa Kudrow. You can't. She's a groundbreaking improv genius. She knows how to party and get down and play.

• 1:07Speaker 01

  She sure does.

• 1:08Dax Shepard?

She was awesome. I love Lisa Kudrow. Well, that's our guest, Lisa Kudrow. I said it seven times. She's an award-winning actor, a producer, friends, da da da da, friends. The comeback, Romeo and Michelle's High School Reunion, Web Therapy, I was on that. Who Do You Think You Are? And, okay, her new show, I Say From The Bottom Of My Heart, is delicious.

• 1:30Speaker 01

  I can't wait.

• 1:31Dax Shepard?

You're gonna love it. I told you, it's very Murders In The Building with Apartments.

• 1:35Speaker 01

Murders In The Building. I know. I'm so excited.

• 1:37Dax Shepard?

Yes. It's really, really great. She's fantastic in it. Please enjoy.

• 1:41Speaker 01

Guys, this is a huge deal.

• 1:43Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 1:44Speaker 01

I feel very grateful. We're seven years in and it's our first friend.

• 1:51Dax Shepard?

It'll come up in the episode, but I

• 1:55Dax Shepard?

I want to say it now. We did almost have a friend, David Schwimmer.

• 1:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:00Dax Shepard?

And he had to cancel because he had a really bad ear infection.

• 2:03Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:04Dax Shepard?

And Robbie Wab said he had Schwimmer's ear.

• 2:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:07Dax Shepard?

  It's really good.

• 2:07Speaker 01

  Great joke.

• 2:08Dax Shepard?

It bears repeating twice. Okay, please enjoy Lisa Kudrow. We get support from Quince.

• 2:14Speaker 01

Okay, can we talk about the fact that the holidays are already here? It's crazy. I feel like I blinked and now we're in gifting season, which I'm not really mad about because I do love giving gifts. And Quince is making it so easy to find something great for everyone on my list, including myself, because let's be honest, self gifting is a love language.

• 2:34Dax Shepard?

Quince is seriously the gift that keeps on giving. Their high quality staples are made with premium materials like 100% Mongolian cashmere, 14 karat gold and Italian leather, full on luxury quality at prices that won't wreck your holiday budget.

• 2:50Speaker 01

It's the dream. The cashmere sweater is starting at $60, down jackets, wool outerwear, cashmere accessories. You and everyone on your list are staying cozy and looking incredible all season long.

• 3:01Dax Shepard?

Well, I'm going to tell you this, it just got chilly for the first time this year in California, and I'm so excited. And I'm wearing my Quince cashmere right now.

• 3:08Speaker 01

  It's great.

• 3:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I am going to gift this to some of my friends. I hope they're not listening.

• 3:13Speaker 01

Quince is also more than clothing. They've got fine jewelry for your significant other, leather bags for your bestie, hotel quality bedding to set up your guest rooms, chef grade cookware. That's an amazing thing they offer here. And it's such a good gift because people don't like buying cookware for themselves, but it's very important. And they also have five star luggage, another good gift that people don't like buying for themselves.

• 5:37Speaker 04

  I'm chewing gum.

• 5:38Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. Yeah, you should. Is it nicotine gum?

• 5:41Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 5:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you know, I love nicotine. I'm on all kinds of variety other than smoking.

• 5:46Speaker 04

  What?

• 5:46Dax Shepard?

I do the mints, the lozenges, and then I do a little spray. Do you know about the spray?

• 5:53Speaker 04

I don't do it, but my husband does.

• 5:55Dax Shepard?

  Oh, he does.

• 5:56Speaker 04

  You get it here.

• 5:57Dax Shepard?

It's fucking pricey. Cause yeah, they're European, right?

• 6:02Speaker 04

  Right. That's it.

• 6:03Dax Shepard?

  That's it, right here. Yeah.

• 6:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 6:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 6:05Speaker 04

  That's it.

• 6:06Dax Shepard?

  So exciting.

• 6:07Speaker 04

I'm just so happy I'm not getting judged for still using nicotine.

• 6:11Dax Shepard?

  Oh, no, no, no.

• 6:12Speaker 04

Cause most people say, well, you gotta get off that. Why?

• 6:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:16Dax Shepard?

  Cause they don't know.

• 6:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:17Dax Shepard?

They're just thinking of smoking, which yes, you should get off smoking. And I chewed tobacco, which of course you should get off of that, but nicotine is fine.

• 6:24Speaker 04

That's what my research has shown.

• 6:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah. We've had many doctors confirm that on here.

• 6:28Speaker 04

  Yeah. Oh, good.

• 6:30Dax Shepard?

Well, one of them was questionable.

• 6:31Speaker 04

That's not the problem. It was the delivery system. That's the problem. Tobacco is the best delivery system.

• 6:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:36Speaker 04

  The dosage was really perfect.

• 6:39Speaker 01

How long did you partake in that delivery system?

• 6:42Speaker 04

  20 years.

• 6:43Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 6:44Speaker 04

Yeah. And then 20 years of this.

• 6:46Dax Shepard?

I'm 20 years on this too.

• 6:48Speaker 01

  Yay.

• 6:48Dax Shepard?

We both quit at the same time. I quit in 2005.

• 6:50Speaker 04

  Yeah, me too.

• 6:51Dax Shepard?

I did the full body scan recently and I was just bracing. I'm like, you know, dude, you smoked a pack a day when not drinking and several packs when drinking a day.

• 7:00Speaker 04

  That's a bad combination too.

• 7:02Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 7:02Speaker 04

  That's so bad.

• 7:03Dax Shepard?

It is. You can't get enough of them in your mouth when you're drunk.

• 7:08Speaker 04

I know. Well, it's just two lung irritants and throat irritants.

• 7:12Speaker 01

  It's not good.

• 7:14Dax Shepard?

It's a real fuck you to that whole system.

• 7:16Speaker 04

Yeah. By the way, this is why I'm no fun in a dinner party.

• 7:19Dax Shepard?

  Why?

• 7:20Speaker 04

Cause I get like, oh no, that's terrible. Two irritants.

• 7:25Speaker 04

Did you read the study on?

• 7:27Dax Shepard?

I think that's part of your charm though.

• 7:28Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 7:29Dax Shepard?

No, it is. I watched a ton of interviews with you today. I think that's a very charming part of you. Now back to you and I trying to not perform anymore.

• 7:36Speaker 04

  Oh, right.

• 7:37Dax Shepard?

My therapist would say to me, hey, sometimes, and I'm only asking you to do it 10% of the time. Sometimes watch the show. It's a good show. You don't always have to be the show, but I'm still controlling. Some of my performing is out of my controlling nature. Is yours that way?

• 7:52Speaker 04

I'm not sure, or I don't want to know.

• 7:54Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 7:55Speaker 04

  Maybe more to the point.

• 7:56Speaker 01

  More honest, yeah.

• 7:57Speaker 04

Maybe I am. After Friends, I did two different shows. That was basically just me.

• 8:03Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes, yes.

• 8:05Speaker 04

So I did have to think about, ooh, what's wrong with you?

• 8:11Speaker 01

Coming from the most quintessential ensemble.

• 8:14Speaker 04

And to me, that has nothing to do with it.

• 8:16Dax Shepard?

  Right, right, right.

• 8:18Speaker 01

  Coincidence.

• 8:19Speaker 04

By the way, maybe it does have nothing to do with it.

• 8:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 8:23Speaker 04

And maybe it does. Do I have to know?

• 8:25Dax Shepard?

Wasn't the working title, though, of one of the shows, Now It's My Time to Shine?

• 8:32Speaker 04

That was another show. That was a third show.

• 8:34Dax Shepard?

There's a third show. Still in development, in development hell. But my controlling part is I get anxiety that if it's left to some non-professionals, that this thing's gonna go in the ditch. It's like, if I get on an elevator with four strangers, I think, well, I'm the one with improv training. It's kind of on my shoulders to make this experience less awkward.

• 8:54Speaker 04

Or is it also there are expectations from this group of me?

• 8:58Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 8:59Speaker 04

So to me, that is very actor-y or entertaining person who's trying to please or fulfill expectations. I know there's a part of me that just wants to play too.

• 9:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:12Speaker 04

So if I am in a gathering where there are funny people around and they're doing bits, I want to participate. I also want to see if I can keep up. Or I'm a little competitive and I think I can do better.

• 9:24Speaker 01

  I can beat this.

• 9:25Speaker 04

I want to see if I can win at this game.

• 9:27Speaker 01

And you still feel that way.

• 9:28Speaker 04

Yeah, sometimes. And then there's plenty of times where I do feel like, go for it.

• 9:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:33Speaker 04

  Especially if it's a bunch of stand-ups, stand-up comedians.

• 9:37Dax Shepard?

That is a different vibe, though, doesn't it?

• 9:38Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 9:39Dax Shepard?

Because you and I are both from the Groundlings.

• 9:41Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 9:41Dax Shepard?

And we're both improv people and sketch people. I often feel, and this is too critical of stand-ups, but it's like, are we playing or am I hearing six minutes of your stand-up right now? Is this interactive or am I the recipient of pre-planned something?

• 9:57Speaker 04

Right. And it can get mean if I overstep. I'm inviting some hostility, potentially, if I question or compete.

• 10:08Speaker 01

  Oh, sure.

• 10:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but it's worse for you.

• 10:11Speaker 04

  Because I'm a woman. That's true.

• 10:14Speaker 01

Do you also think people, because of the TV show, they don't know what you can do? They think, oh, you can Read a script in a funny way, but they don't know about your background.

• 10:24Dax Shepard?

They don't know about the pedigree.

• 10:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, they don't.

• 10:26Speaker 04

About my huge stand-up career before. No, and I did not have a stand-up career ever.

• 10:31Speaker 01

  But you were a groundling.

• 10:32Speaker 04

Well, some people know they don't care because it's not stand-up. By the way, have you noticed, to me, stand-up comedians are so much more serious

• 10:42Speaker 01

  Big time.

• 10:42Speaker 04

than comedic actors. They want to analyze comedy and pick it apart and talk really seriously about what they do.

• 10:51Dax Shepard?

Yes, I definitely think there's a strata of dysfunction that the result is comedy. And I think improv artists are like a seven on that scale.

• 11:00Speaker 04

  Right.

• 11:00Dax Shepard?

And I think stand-ups are generally a 10. They got some fucking shit to work out and you're gonna sit here and listen to it.

• 11:06Speaker 04

  Were you a groundling?

• 11:07Dax Shepard?

No, I didn't make it. I was in the Sunday company for a year and was kicked out.

• 11:10Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 11:11Dax Shepard?

And I just recently got over that wound.

• 11:14Dax Shepard?

I mean, truly, maybe like six years ago.

• 11:16Speaker 04

I was never a crowd pleaser. I don't even know how I got into the main company. Because I didn't do the kind of stuff audiences liked.

• 11:25Dax Shepard?

So I think it would be helpful for people to know, within the groundlings, when you're in the Sunday company or the main company, you can be an inside favorite. There's always a couple people in the group that they're clearly the funniest by our definition, but that's not to say they kill the most. In fact, it's almost assured that you won't kill if you're the favorite among us. Whoever was the most offbeat and weirdest and most esoteric would make us laugh the night you'd put up all the sketches because it was refreshing and novel.

• 11:51Speaker 04

I don't know if I fit that category either.

• 11:54Speaker 01

Who were you there? What kind of things were you doing?

• 11:57Speaker 04

I did your favorite actress on a talk show. It became a character I did in the comeback.

• 12:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:03Speaker 04

This HBO show, but I loved that character monologue. I loved doing those.

• 12:09Dax Shepard?

  What about improv?

• 12:10Speaker 04

Yeah, but not game improvs. I liked, I did this thing, Transformers, where it's sort of longer form and you do a scene and then it gets silent, whatever. I guess it's called miming to people listening who might not know. Whatever space work you're doing, it starts transforming as a group.

• 12:28Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 12:29Speaker 04

You're all in sync and you turn. From bailing hay to a rodeo lasso or something.

• 12:35Dax Shepard?

  Right, right, right.

• 12:36Speaker 04

And then your new characters. They were really good improvisers in that. I was really happy. I was the only girl.

• 12:42Dax Shepard?

Well, let's back all the way up. Mom was a real estate agent.

• 12:45Speaker 04

When I was in high school, yeah.

• 12:47Dax Shepard?

Okay, and dad was a doctor and he specialized in headaches.

• 12:51Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 12:52Dax Shepard?

What would that make him by training? Was it an internist?

• 12:54Speaker 04

  An internist, yeah.

• 12:55Dax Shepard?

I can only assume, knowing that you ended up working with him for so long, were you guys besties? Did you have a great relationship?

• 13:01Speaker 04

  Yeah, very close.

• 13:02Dax Shepard?

And you have an older sister and two brothers?

• 13:04Speaker 04

  Just sister and a brother.

• 13:05Dax Shepard?

Oh, I got that wrong. Okay, sister and a brother. And you went to Vassar?

• 13:10Speaker 04

  Vassar?

• 13:11Dax Shepard?

Is that how you say it?

• 13:12Speaker 04

  Vassar.

• 13:12Speaker 01

You made it fancier. I mean, it is fancy, but you made it really fancy.

• 13:17Speaker 04

They would say they went to Vassar.

• 13:20Dax Shepard?

Janine's going to Vassar in September and we're thrilled about it. She absolutely aced her interview.

• 13:29Speaker 04

I was thrilled to go to Vassar. I thought, yes, I'm gonna be a lady. Only ladies go to Vassar. And I get there and I find out, oh, these were like the wild ones. Really?

• 13:38Dax Shepard?

Really? What do you mean by that? Like the Kennedy type, people who partied and had yachts and stuff?

• 13:43Speaker 04

Very artistic and sort of rebellious and went their own way, you know, were not mainstream. It opened in 1861, which is the start of the Civil War.

• 13:56Dax Shepard?

  It was a women's college?

• 13:57Speaker 04

I think the first to offer science for women to learn.

• 14:03Dax Shepard?

  For women.

• 14:04Speaker 01

Women should not be trusted with science.

• 14:06Dax Shepard?

  No, that's a terrible idea.

• 14:09Speaker 04

So you already are gonna have a lot of people who are sending their daughters there who are not in the mainstream.

• 14:15Dax Shepard?

Was it all female when you went there?

• 14:17Speaker 04

  No.

• 14:17Dax Shepard?

When did it switch to coed?

• 14:19Speaker 04

  1969.

• 14:20Dax Shepard?

  Perfect year for that.

• 14:22Speaker 04

I think the first year of graduating class of men was like 72, 3, 4.

• 14:29Dax Shepard?

Okay, and when you went there, you majored in biology. I presume you were gonna be on a medical track?

• 14:35Speaker 04

  Yeah, it was pre-med.

• 14:36Dax Shepard?

So had you done any acting in Encino?

• 14:38Speaker 04

In junior high I did, because I- I liked going to summer school. I liked having something to do and I took a play production thing and we wrote sketches and it was so fun and I could do it well.

• 14:50Dax Shepard?

But why not stick with it in high school?

• 14:51Speaker 04

No, that is not something that if you're going to be an adult, you do, I decided.

• 14:57Dax Shepard?

Oh, right. It was too frivolous.

• 14:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 14:59Dax Shepard?

Okay. You also went to high school with Eazy-E.

• 15:02Speaker 01

  Oh, my. I did?

• 15:03Dax Shepard?

You went to the same high school. What was it Taft? What was it called?

• 15:06Speaker 04

  Yeah, how many years apart?

• 15:07Dax Shepard?

No, it's at the same time.

• 15:08Speaker 04

  What?

• 15:09Dax Shepard?

How could I be the one telling you this?

• 15:11Speaker 04

  Because I don't know.

• 15:12Dax Shepard?

You don't know about yourself, do you?

• 15:14Speaker 04

  I don't know myself.

• 15:14Dax Shepard?

  You're gonna enjoy this.

• 15:16Speaker 04

I also don't know who that is.

• 15:18Dax Shepard?

You don't know who Eazy-E is? This is so charming, too.

• 15:20Speaker 01

  This is great.

• 15:21Dax Shepard?

He's one of the members of NWA.

• 15:23Speaker 04

  Oh, wow.

• 15:24Dax Shepard?

Yes. I'm disappointed you didn't know he went there because I was under the assumption he lived in Compton. Their hit song was Straight Outta Compton.

• 15:31Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:31Dax Shepard?

But he's going to school with you out in Woodland Hills.

• 15:33Speaker 04

  Out in Woodland Hills, yeah.

• 15:34Dax Shepard?

Maybe he got bust there or something?

• 15:36Speaker 04

  Maybe. I don't know.

• 15:38Speaker 01

What's his name before it was Eazy-E? That might help us.

• 15:41Speaker 04

I know. What if I go, oh?

• 15:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 15:44Dax Shepard?

I slept with him in 11th grade.

• 15:48Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 15:49Dax Shepard?

  No help.

• 15:50Speaker 04

But by the way, no, I had three friends.

• 15:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, tell me.

• 15:53Speaker 04

  In high school.

• 15:54Dax Shepard?

  Who were they?

• 15:55Speaker 04

  Well, maybe four.

• 15:56Dax Shepard?

Smartypants? Like, what was your strata in that?

• 15:59Speaker 04

Your first year in high school was sophomore year and for five minutes, I thought, okay, I'm gonna try to be a cheerleader. I'm gonna try to be part of everything.

• 16:09Speaker 01

  The scene.

• 16:10Speaker 04

So I went to all the rehearsals and I learned the thing for cheerleading squad. And then I didn't realize to try out, that's in front of whoever shows up and wants to watch. And I just went, oh, no. Well, now, no. I do not want to be a cheerleader. And then you have to run and be elected and you have to campaign. I'm out. Not for me. No.

• 16:33Speaker 01

  Because you're shy?

• 16:34Speaker 04

It was too embarrassing. Nothing good is gonna come of that.

• 16:38Dax Shepard?

  You're very tall.

• 16:39Speaker 04

  I am very tall?

• 16:41Dax Shepard?

  I don't know.

• 16:41Speaker 01

  How tall are you?

• 16:42Dax Shepard?

  How tall are you?

• 16:43Speaker 04

Five eight, five seven and a half.

• 16:45Speaker 01

  That's tall.

• 16:45Dax Shepard?

  That's not that tall.

• 16:47Speaker 04

  It's not that tall.

• 16:48Dax Shepard?

  Take back my whole thing.

• 16:48Speaker 04

  I look gargantuan.

• 16:50Dax Shepard?

No, I just wondered if, I think sometimes it's rough being tall when you're a girl in high school and boys are like 5'4". They haven't grown and it can be hard.

• 16:59Speaker 04

Or you're an actress and you're the only tall actor.

• 17:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. You and I are built for each other to be in a scene together. I'll make you look like tiny little girl.

• 17:08Speaker 04

I know. I just worked with Ray Romano and I didn't know he was that tall because of Brad Garrett, but he's like 6'2" or 6'3".

• 17:18Dax Shepard?

This is a phenomenon. I've noticed it elsewhere, right? I remember the first time I met Andy Richter in real life and I went, what? You're 6'3"?

• 17:26Speaker 04

  But he's next to Conan.

• 17:28Dax Shepard?

  His whole career, yes.

• 17:29Speaker 01

  Oh my God.

• 17:30Dax Shepard?

Like, how tall do you think Andy Richter? He and I are the same height.

• 17:33Speaker 01

  Definitely 5'5".

• 17:36Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 17:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah, with heels. And that can happen. Yeah, Brad Garrett is a monster. So Ray Romano.

• 17:42Speaker 04

  He's very, very tall.

• 17:42Dax Shepard?

But Ray was on Parenthood, so I'm hip to the fact that he's probably 6'1" or 2 or something.

• 17:46Speaker 04

  Sorry, 6'1", 2, yeah.

• 17:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, 6'12".

• 17:48Speaker 01

We'll fact check it. We'll get his exact dimension.

• 17:51Dax Shepard?

Okay, so in high school, you had three friends?

• 17:55Speaker 04

  Four.

• 17:55Dax Shepard?

Four. You just added one. Did you feel self-conscious that it was only three? Now you just made it four in real time?

• 18:01Speaker 04

I felt bad that I left out one of them.

• 18:04Dax Shepard?

  Michael?

• 18:04Speaker 04

No, I'm thinking of the girls. There were four of us. So I had three friends. Wait, one, two, no, four. There were five of us. I am fun at a dinner party.

• 18:14Dax Shepard?

I've been to one with you. I doubt you remember, but I've been to one with you.

• 18:18Speaker 04

  Which one?

• 18:19Dax Shepard?

We were at Adam Vennett's house for dinner one time.

• 18:24Speaker 04

  Oh my God.

• 18:24Dax Shepard?

  With my ex-girlfriend, Bree.

• 18:26Speaker 01

Oh, so it was a long time ago.

• 18:28Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 18:29Dax Shepard?

  Tell me.

• 18:30Speaker 04

  It was outside?

• 18:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, at his nice big mansion.

• 18:33Speaker 04

Yes, and Jim Burrows was there?

• 18:34Dax Shepard?

Was he? I wasn't hip enough yet to have known who Jim Burrows was.

• 18:38Speaker 04

And somebody showed up a little late with a woman. I don't know if you'll clock this too. Maybe you won't. But this woman who I just went, what? The hell?

• 18:51Dax Shepard?

  What version?

• 18:52Speaker 04

Why is this happening right now?

• 18:54Speaker 01

  Like, how does that exist?

• 18:55Dax Shepard?

Like, did it look like a sex worker?

• 18:56Speaker 04

This person that was just sort of.

• 18:57Dax Shepard?

  High end.

• 18:58Speaker 04

And then I saw that person a few years later on One of the Housewives.

• 19:04Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 19:05Speaker 04

On a show. And I went, okay.

• 19:08Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 19:10Speaker 04

But I can be sort of judgmental and someone comes in and you're just like riffraff, you know?

• 19:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 19:17Dax Shepard?

Yep. Bogey is what we say.

• 19:19Speaker 04

  Oh, you do?

• 19:19Dax Shepard?

My wife and I'll go bogey six o'clock.

• 19:21Speaker 04

  Riffraff's a bad word, I think.

• 19:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 19:23Dax Shepard?

Well, you think it's got like a bad historical?

• 19:25Speaker 04

  I think so.

• 19:26Dax Shepard?

  Like racist or something?

• 19:28Speaker 04

  Oh, God, I hope not.

• 19:29Dax Shepard?

Well, then what can be bad about it if it's not racial?

• 19:31Speaker 04

Because I know I've seen things.

• 19:33Speaker 01

Yeah, words are canceled now. We have to look it up.

• 19:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, Rob.

• 19:37Speaker 04

Nobody, even like back then. I saw it in an old movie where it's like, oh, they're an actor. All actors are riffraff. And then it came up in something else. And so I was like, don't say that. That's a horrible thing to say.

• 19:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 19:49Speaker 04

Riffraff? It doesn't sound like really bad.

• 19:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, it doesn't.

• 19:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay, use, we got clearance.

• 19:54Speaker 04

  Oh, good.

• 19:54Dax Shepard?

What's the origin? See, everything's good. Oh, fuck, we don't care about that. Is that referring to any ethnicity or anything?

• 20:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, then we're fine.

• 20:02Dax Shepard?

My only memory of who was there is you.

• 20:04Speaker 04

  Oh, wow.

• 20:05Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I remember Bree and I driving home and we were like, I can't believe we met Lisa Kudrow.

• 20:09Speaker 01

  Oh, how fun.

• 20:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we couldn't believe we were at a dinner with you, to be honest. So I don't know, other than Venet, who was there other than you?

• 20:17Speaker 04

And Chuck Lorre was there too, I think.

• 20:19Speaker 01

Oh, wow, Dex, you missed a lot of people.

• 20:22Dax Shepard?

How many times do you have dinner over there? Just once?

• 20:23Speaker 04

I don't remember that many times.

• 20:25Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 20:27Dax Shepard?

But, okay, so for people who don't know, when you're on a set and you're filming, the A Ds, if someone wanders into the scene that's not background hired to be in the scene, like you're filming on a sidewalk in downtown L.A. And everyone that walks back and forth has been hired. But if a civilian wanders in, they go, might go to three. Yeah, there's a bogey. They always say there's a bogey. And that's a civilian that's wandered into the professional set.

• 20:51Speaker 04

  Okay, God, that's funny.

• 20:52Dax Shepard?

Krista and I are big on bogey. We got three bogeys. You're somewhere and you just think, oh, my God, some civilians have entered the wrong door or something.

• 21:00Speaker 01

  So unrelatable.

• 21:01Dax Shepard?

I don't think this. Well, no, I think everyone can relate to people being at a party that doesn't seem like they know anyone. That's all it is.

• 21:08Speaker 01

Well, that happened here. So for Halloween, Dex has a big hayride for this neighborhood. And he takes it all across the neighborhood. It's very sweet and cute.

• 21:15Speaker 04

  Oh, that's nice.

• 21:16Dax Shepard?

  Thank you.

• 21:16Speaker 01

But two of our friends who have a baby, they came back early and they were sitting here. And there were some bogeys slash riffraff that were just hanging out at the house. No one. Knew who they were for like 35 minutes. They were just chatting with some.

• 21:30Speaker 04

See, that would make me very nervous.

• 21:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:33Dax Shepard?

And in their defense, it was a very permeable.

• 21:36Speaker 04

  Please let's hear their defense.

• 21:37Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 21:37Speaker 04

And then my anxiety will go away.

• 21:39Dax Shepard?

We got a food truck and invited everyone to come to the driveway and have a hamburger on Halloween night.

• 21:43Speaker 04

  You invited everyone.

• 21:44Dax Shepard?

That's right. But now there's a little bit of a permeable. Is that the right word? There's an impermeable border. Like, that's not an invitation to inside my house. That's the driveway where the food truck is. So it sounds like people decided, let's also get into the house.

• 21:57Speaker 01

  They crossed the line.

• 21:58Dax Shepard?

Luckily, I was busy driving the hayride and I missed it. So, okay, great.

• 22:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:02Dax Shepard?

Back to you and your friends.

• 22:04Speaker 04

I'm working on the in defense of.

• 22:05Dax Shepard?

Hey, you invited me over for a burger. How was I know I wasn't?

• 22:09Speaker 04

And there were people in the house, so they went in.

• 22:11Speaker 01

Then we're like, I guess this is.

• 22:12Speaker 04

Like, other people are in. I guess it's inside and outside. I'm getting chilly.

• 22:16Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 22:17Speaker 04

  Should we just go inside?

• 22:18Speaker 01

Should we go inside where these other people are? This is clearly a haunted house situation.

• 22:22Dax Shepard?

  They're probably bogies too.

• 22:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:24Speaker 04

  You were there inside.

• 22:25Speaker 01

No, I was out in the hayride, but two of our friends came back early because they had a baby. So they then later were like, this is so weird.

• 22:32Speaker 04

  Right, but they were inside.

• 22:34Speaker 01

Yeah, they were inside, but they're allowed.

• 22:36Dax Shepard?

We were out of the house.

• 22:37Speaker 04

Say that it's all fine. It's okay. No one meant any harm.

• 22:41Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 22:41Speaker 04

Mostly it's good people in the world.

• 22:43Speaker 01

Let's just keep telling ourselves that, right?

• 22:45Speaker 04

And at some point, we're all gonna die anyway, and it's all gonna be okay.

• 22:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah, well, I bet all this in heaven. We just leave the house for two hours and the house is wide open. So people probably fuck in our bedroom.

• 22:57Speaker 01

  We're not doing that anymore.

• 22:58Speaker 04

Let that be the worst thing.

• 23:00Dax Shepard?

Did you, did you pine for popularity? Did you care? Were you the kind of student that you had your thing? You were focused? I'm gonna be a doctor. I don't give a fuck about all this frivolous crap. Or did you want way more friends?

• 23:12Speaker 04

No, that is how it was. Because junior high, I thought, oof, we're all supposed to be popular. That's supposed to happen developmentally, right? See, again, why I'm not fun at a dinner party.

• 23:23Dax Shepard?

Because you want to get into the science.

• 23:24Speaker 04

Because I want to get into the evolutionary.

• 23:27Speaker 01

Well, to be fair, you were a biology major. It's in your history.

• 23:30Speaker 04

  You're generous.

• 23:31Dax Shepard?

You and I would be cutting it up like crazy because that's all I want to talk about too. I don't know if you've ever heard the show. That's all this. Yes.

• 23:37Speaker 04

Why do you think that happens?

• 23:38Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 23:39Dax Shepard?

I must know. I can't feel comfortable until I understand why it happened. Cause then I can predict what's gonna happen. That's all I really wanna do.

• 23:45Speaker 04

And that, yeah, is very important evolutionarily. Modeling, playing out scenarios, having a plan.

• 23:51Speaker 01

The world is scary if we can't do that.

• 23:53Speaker 04

Right. Don't we all do that? No. Happy people do not do that.

• 23:57Speaker 01

Do you think? I don't know.

• 24:00Speaker 04

Yes, to just be fine with what is. And then something comes up, you'll deal with it. I can be that person sometimes. Very happy when I am. But today, I mean, I have to say it's election day. So everything is just like, all right, what's gonna happen? What should we prepare for? Oh, my God.

• 24:15Speaker 01

Yeah, there's a level of intensity.

• 24:17Dax Shepard?

  Uh, yeah, there's a

• 24:18Speaker 04

  Looking for that.

• 24:18Dax Shepard?

  Baseline anxiety.

• 24:20Speaker 01

Yeah, I can feel it walking around the world today. Like, whoo, everyone's a little on edge.

• 24:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 24:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 24:26Speaker 04

  Okay, anyway.

• 24:27Dax Shepard?

Okay, so great. So I'm delighted to know that you didn't really covet that.

• 24:30Speaker 04

I'm gonna focus on getting myself to where I think I need to be, and that is college. Somewhere on the East Coast and not here in Southern California.

• 24:42Dax Shepard?

I relate to that greatly. And I also remember from Poler's autobiography, those moments you have in your teenage years, and for mine, it was literally in a mirror. Where I go like, okay, here's the situation. You're not a babe. I wanted to look like all these other boys. We're just gonna bet on our personality. Like a real, let's talk about the game plan here. Those moments happen in teenage years. It's really adorable. I wish I could like see kids doing that in the mirror.

• 25:04Speaker 04

My head's full of 10 different things. You walked in today and I went, Jesus, he looks so gorgeous.

• 25:12Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God.

• 25:13Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 25:15Dax Shepard?

  Thank you.

• 25:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:16Dax Shepard?

I think I'm way better looking for sure now than I was.

• 25:19Speaker 04

It happens with men too, by the way.

• 25:21Speaker 01

  Have you seen The Substance?

• 25:23Speaker 04

  No.

• 25:24Speaker 01

Okay, a movie you gotta see it. Do me more.

• 25:26Speaker 04

  Is it scary?

• 25:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 25:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:28Speaker 04

Then I will not see that movie. I'm sorry.

• 25:31Dax Shepard?

Just tell you everything that happens in it?

• 25:32Speaker 04

  Not if it's scary.

• 25:34Speaker 01

But it's about aging, really, women aging and how they get sort of cast aside.

• 25:39Dax Shepard?

I'll just hit you with the premise.

• 25:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:40Dax Shepard?

She's an aging actress. She finds out there's a thing you can shoot in your body. And then for two weeks, you'll be your twenties self, but you have to return to your old self for two weeks. And you go two weeks, two weeks, two weeks. And that's the substance that makes you young again. And of course, when she's her younger self, she don't want to play by those rules.

• 25:59Speaker 01

She doesn't want to go back.

• 26:00Speaker 04

  Is she back in time?

• 26:01Dax Shepard?

Nope. She takes this shot. She becomes young again for two weeks. And then she has to go through a procedure to go back to being old for two weeks.

• 26:08Speaker 04

Oh, and she says, no, I don't want to go back to being old.

• 26:11Dax Shepard?

And you pay a heavy price for that. And you end up kind of destroying your older self. It's very, very good and so feminist. It's nuts.

• 26:20Speaker 01

But this whole thing of he comes in, he's gorgeous, he looks better. And we do that for men. We allow men to age and think it's attractive and it's not the same for women.

• 26:29Dax Shepard?

I think you and I could have a conversation that no one was allowed to have.

• 26:32Speaker 04

  About?

• 26:33Dax Shepard?

There is an evolutionary reason for that. It's like both unfortunate and it's not out of nowhere.

• 26:39Speaker 04

  Right.

• 26:39Dax Shepard?

Dudes can have kids in their nineties. Look at some of our famous directors.

• 26:44Speaker 04

  It's true. Right. Women can't and shouldn't.

• 26:47Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 26:51Dax Shepard?

We don't know that we have that awareness. So you gotta like fight through all that.

• 26:55Speaker 04

Cause it's not just about procreation anymore.

• 26:58Dax Shepard?

No, we don't even need each other anymore, which is a whole new interesting dynamic.

• 27:01Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 27:02Dax Shepard?

  And it's scary.

• 27:03Speaker 04

That's the chilling, terrifying thing. By the way, you know, the movie here?

• 27:07Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 27:08Speaker 04

Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Robert Zemeckis, it's going through time. And they shot it and they could actually shoot the scene and then look at the playback of them as younger. And it's ready.

• 27:21Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 27:22Speaker 04

  For them to see.

• 27:23Dax Shepard?

Whoa. And they wanted to make this movie for the rest of their lives?

• 27:26Speaker 04

Well, and all I got from that was this is an endorsement for AI and oh, my God. It's not like, oh, it's going to ruin everything, but

• 27:35Dax Shepard?

  But maybe.

• 27:35Speaker 04

What will there be left for, forget actors, but what about up and coming actors? They'll just be licensing and recycling.

• 27:44Dax Shepard?

We'll be watching new Brando movies.

• 27:46Speaker 04

Yeah. And then set that completely aside. What work will there be for human beings?

• 27:52Speaker 01

Yeah, we've talked a lot about this.

• 27:54Speaker 04

Oh, you do talk about that.

• 27:55Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 27:56Speaker 04

And then what? So there'll be some kind of living stipend for people?

• 28:00Speaker 01

  Exactly. There'll be no work.

• 28:01Speaker 04

How can it possibly be enough?

• 28:03Dax Shepard?

Let me attempt to make a glass half full.

• 28:05Speaker 04

I'm shaking. I don't know if it's chilly in here or.

• 28:09Dax Shepard?

Well, let me, are you cold? Are you cold?

• 28:11Speaker 04

  Maybe.

• 28:11Speaker 01

Feel free to use either of those blankets.

• 28:13Dax Shepard?

Oh, can I do this for you? Cause I've done it one other time.

• 28:16Speaker 04

Oh, yeah. He likes. And it made you happy?

• 28:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 28:18Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 28:20Speaker 04

Or I'm just getting old and I need a shawl.

• 28:22Speaker 01

  It gets a little chilly.

• 28:23Speaker 04

  That's nice.

• 28:24Speaker 01

He likes to wrap people in like a burrito.

• 28:26Dax Shepard?

Okay. You go like this. You can change when I leave.

• 28:29Speaker 04

Okay, thanks. Yeah. I just won't gesture anymore.

• 28:32Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, you look so cute like a baby.

• 28:34Speaker 04

  Okay, this is great.

• 28:36Dax Shepard?

I just took you back in time without AI.

• 28:38Speaker 04

This is like night night time now.

• 28:40Dax Shepard?

  Nighty night.

• 28:43Speaker 04

  Put her to sleep.

• 28:44Dax Shepard?

  Stay in your bedroom tonight.

• 28:45Speaker 04

Put her to sleep. This is a drag.

• 28:46Speaker 01

  This isn't working out.

• 28:48Dax Shepard?

Okay, maybe this is crazy, glass half full. And I think it's very unlikely.

• 28:52Speaker 04

Oh, please tell me the full part.

• 28:54Dax Shepard?

So you and I will have experience and I already know you have your arms completely wrapped around the experience. Cause I've heard you talk about it. I wrote down a quote from you that said, uh, let me just read it cause it's so good. That's the healing power of fame. Everything will be fixed now. You're talking about getting the dream and your thought is everything will be fixed now.

• 29:13Speaker 04

  That's the fallacy.

• 29:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:15Speaker 04

Right. Okay. Because you said that's the healing power of fame.

• 29:19Dax Shepard?

Right. Suggesting like, yes, that there would be a healing power of fame. It would fix everything.

• 29:25Speaker 04

  And it doesn't.

• 29:25Dax Shepard?

It doesn't, but I think in that for me is the greatest gift I've ever been given because. I at least got to go like, okay, great. That's not it. What is it? And it sent me on a journey of figuring out what it is. And if I hadn't been given the gift to find out it was black luster or that it was empty, I would have never stopped believing that that would have been the fix. So currently, everyone in America thinks if I didn't have this job and I didn't have money problems and I didn't have that, I would be fixed. And so we'll give everyone that. You don't work. You don't have money problems. Fucking robots are doing every single thing. And then three weeks after that, they turn that light switch on. Everyone's gonna be like, yeah, I'm miserable. Why am I miserable? And then we all start the path.

• 30:11Dax Shepard?

  That could be the outcome.

• 30:12Speaker 01

How's that glass half full? That sounds so depressing.

• 30:14Dax Shepard?

Because everyone will actually try to confront the real angst of being a human.

• 30:19Speaker 01

  The real purpose.

• 30:20Dax Shepard?

Other stories we've told ourselves that it's because we don't have this ski boat. We don't have this pair of shoes.

• 30:26Speaker 01

It's an equalizer, that's for sure.

• 30:28Speaker 04

So what you're saying is so people will.

• 30:31Dax Shepard?

  Be miserable.

• 30:32Speaker 04

Be miserable, but then what they're gonna see is being here on this planet in this life is about something else. It's not about what I do. It's about who I love and who loves me. It's about connecting. It's about being part of a community. But a community doing what?

• 30:53Dax Shepard?

Meeting in the yard, I guess.

• 30:54Speaker 01

Painting? It doesn't have to be for a result.

• 30:57Speaker 04

The domestic robot will do that better.

• 30:59Speaker 01

  Oh, it will be better.

• 31:00Speaker 04

Artists robots will do it better.

• 31:01Speaker 01

Right. So I guess it can't be about being the best. Takes that off the table.

• 31:06Dax Shepard?

I have a solution. Hiking with friends, playing pickleball, playing cards, being social and enjoying the big gift, which is like other people.

• 31:16Speaker 04

Right, but haven't you been on vacation? And after a week?

• 31:24Speaker 01

  The energy.

• 31:24Speaker 04

  Okay, now what?

• 31:25Dax Shepard?

Well, because you and I are doing the same thing at the end of seven days. Like, I'm a piece of shit because I haven't been productive. And if I'm not productive, I have no value.

• 31:32Speaker 04

  I don't feel like that.

• 31:33Dax Shepard?

Oh, you don't? What's your issue? Yours bored.

• 31:35Speaker 04

Yeah, everyone needs an occupation. I don't mean the professional occupation. I mean.

• 31:40Dax Shepard?

  A purpose.

• 31:41Speaker 04

You need. Something to occupy your time and you need to decide what's fulfilling and what isn't.

• 31:48Dax Shepard?

But again, we're so distracted by the immediate needs that are on everyone's plate. Make my rent, feed my kids, all this stuff.

• 31:54Speaker 04

But you're saying that'll be solved. And I'm saying, I don't know what government can afford to solve that on a satisfactory level.

• 32:01Dax Shepard?

Currently, we can't. We're just imagining a future where the robots actually do do every single thing. They grow the food and there's just a surplus of all things that are needed and they manufacture phones. They build houses for everyone.

• 32:11Speaker 04

  Oh, okay.

• 32:12Dax Shepard?

So that's where we're at. This is Yuval Harari, Homo Deus. It's all been solved. We're all a leisure society. Now what? So I think now what would be Great Depression for months.

• 32:24Speaker 04

  Population decline.

• 32:25Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 32:26Speaker 04

  That's a terrible joke.

• 32:30Speaker 04

Because it's not funny. If you or someone you know is contemplating suicide, get in touch with this hotline.

• 32:35Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 32:36Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 32:36Dax Shepard?

Trigger warning. In the show notes. So is that possible? Does it give everyone the gift of not needing all this stuff?

• 32:42Speaker 04

I'd need to see an episode of that. Maybe there was one on Star Trek or a good writer is going to have to play that out for me to see. I'll get back to you.

• 32:50Dax Shepard?

Okay, so now back to graduating, going to Vassar, integrated in 1969 for men, 1861 for females. It started. I just learned all this from you. How the fuck do you get into comedy? Did you know you were funny throughout all that seriousness?

• 33:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:07Dax Shepard?

Do I need to relieve you from that?

• 33:08Speaker 04

I was able to do it myself.

• 33:10Dax Shepard?

  Okay, good.

• 33:11Speaker 04

I'm like Harry Houdini. Somehow I was able to score my hand under the loose blanket.

• 33:17Dax Shepard?

It felt like watching Houdini for a second. That's why I offered assistance. I saw your hand moving around a ton under there like, oh, fuck, she's trapped.

• 33:25Speaker 04

  I can't. I had a feeling. I need my gum.

• 33:30Speaker 05

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert, if you dare.

• 33:37Dax Shepard?

We get support from No Bull. The holidays can get hectic. You finally hit a post summer routine and suddenly you're on hosting duty every week.

• 33:47Speaker 01

That's when you really need to ground yourself.

• 33:49Dax Shepard?

Exactly, and that's why I keep my training routine through the holidays. It's the whole No Bull idea. There's a no bullshit training brand built around consistency, honesty, and just putting in the work. It's not about adding more pressure to an already packed schedule. It's about having the gear and the habits to move through the season your way. My personal favorite, all three of the shoes are fantastic. The Outwork, the Outwork Flex, and the Drive 2. I like the Drive 2 because it's a hybrid. And I lift, of course, but I also like to do what's called box jumps.

• 34:19Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 34:20Dax Shepard?

Right, I do a lot of jumping onto a little platform and I want a little more flexibility. And boy, do they deliver.

• 34:26Speaker 01

And if you're a cardio person and you're running and you also need to be lifting.

• 34:30Dax Shepard?

And the style is banging, I don't know what to say. Beautiful style, very breathable, very, very comfortable, lots of support. They were built for lifting.

• 34:38Speaker 01

They also make a great holiday gift. You know, I love gifting, a purposeful one that actually supports someone's goals and routines. And it's not a gift that just ends up in the back of the closet.

• 34:47Dax Shepard?

• 35:49Dax Shepard?

By the way, do you wear a lot of shawl collars or whatever this would be, Monica? This is a very cute look on you.

• 35:53Speaker 04

It is a nice look. The dress.

• 35:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, the fact that it's like pinstriped up top and then straight.

• 35:58Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 35:59Dax Shepard?

  Very cute.

• 36:01Dax Shepard?

Legend has it, your brother's friends with John Lovitz.

• 36:03Speaker 04

Yeah, I grew up with John Lovitz. He and my brother, best friends.

• 36:07Dax Shepard?

And he grew up in Encino as well?

• 36:08Speaker 04

Tarzana, and he was at our house all the time.

• 36:11Dax Shepard?

And he said to you what?

• 36:12Speaker 04

I let him know after college I decided I should try acting because I always was interested, but threw it away. After I graduated, I realized, wait a minute. Don't have any regrets later. I know you planned to get married and have kids and all of that, but you might regret not ever even trying. So know for sure why you didn't pursue acting. So I let Lovitz know after I graduated because he got on Saturday Night Live. And before that, I thought, oh, it's only a magical few that are touched. Certainly no one who looks like me. But I saw him just pounding away forever. In college, he was a theater major. He wanted to be an actor and, oh, dear God.

• 36:53Dax Shepard?

  Oh, no.

• 36:54Speaker 04

It's so hard. And then he got on Saturday Night Live and I thought, oh, it's his reality. I wonder if I should try. So I let him know and he said, go to Groundlings. That's where I learned the most for acting. That's been the best preparation. I wasn't allowed to even audition because I called them and said, John Lovitz told me to call, which may have been like a fucking guy got on to Saturday Night Live. Okay, well, when's the last time you performed or acted? And I said, junior high. And they said, great, we're sending you someplace else. Oh. See Cynthia Sighetti, who taught improv and she had a class she taught at the Coronet Theater.

• 37:35Dax Shepard?

Oh, no kidding, where they do Largo now.

• 37:37Speaker 04

Yeah. The other person in that class was Conan O'Brien. He also was sent to Cynthia Sighetti. Oh, my God. And by the way, I've told this before, but I was gonna quit. I went to one class of Cynthia's. Conan wasn't there. Everyone there just felt like, oh, not for me.

• 37:51Dax Shepard?

You didn't get a good vibe.

• 37:52Speaker 04

These are actory people. I thought comedy. Would be less serious and phony. They were really overdoing it with emotional adjustments. I was like, this is just embarrassing.

• 38:03Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 38:04Speaker 04

  This is like cheerleading.

• 38:05Speaker 01

You've been embarrassed for people for quite a long time.

• 38:08Speaker 04

Mm hmm. And I didn't want to be part of that.

• 38:11Dax Shepard?

It's an embarrassing endeavor, to be honest.

• 38:13Speaker 04

Well, except when. So the next week I was like, do I go back? I should go. Just go. Come on. And I was a little late and they were already up there doing lift a disc or space ball or whatever it was. Now throw it and you're angry. Everyone's angry, angry now. People are throwing it and they're like, grr. So embarrassing. And then there was Conan. I didn't know him. He was really tall, red hair. And he was throwing it and he was angry, but he wasn't making a meal of it. I got it. And then Cynthia said, good commitment. And I went, that's what commitment means? I can do that. And so I just made a beeline for him when it was all over. And, you know, like, hi, I'm Lisa.

• 38:53Dax Shepard?

  Yes, we're gonna date shortly.

• 38:57Speaker 01

Pretty soon, we will be dating.

• 38:59Speaker 04

  Not really. Best friends.

• 39:01Dax Shepard?

For how long? You did date though, right?

• 39:03Speaker 04

Eight years and then tried that for like-

• 39:06Dax Shepard?

  After eight years of friendship?

• 39:07Speaker 04

  Three months and then no.

• 39:09Dax Shepard?

  That's an ill-fated plan.

• 39:11Speaker 04

  It worked out.

• 39:12Dax Shepard?

Well, clearly, but not in a romantic sense.

• 39:15Speaker 04

I mean, it worked out. We weren't supposed to be.

• 39:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:18Dax Shepard?

No, of course. I'm only saying if you've been friends with someone for eight years, I always have a hard time understanding that transition into dating. Obviously, there's probably success stories.

• 39:29Speaker 01

You think it's too friend zoned by then?

• 39:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, just that's an interesting transition after eight years. Like generally, your first kiss is quite exciting. Whereas opposed to like, we've been hanging for eight years. Now we're kissing feels a little bit awkward.

• 39:42Speaker 04

  No, still exciting.

• 39:43Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 39:44Speaker 04

Yeah, because it's a completely different relationship. And we're better as friends. So that was just a weird blip.

• 39:52Speaker 01

Because I can relate to that is so embarrassing. When I really think about the times I've done it, I feel like it's because, well, first of all, I'm allergic to earnestness. I don't know if you have that.

• 40:03Speaker 04

  Right.

• 40:03Speaker 01

It feels so cringy to- Care, but now I can see that as that's actually a beautiful thing that people care and throw the thing with such fervor, even though it's embarrassing. I can see that now as cool. Do you think you have that? I'm afraid to care that much.

• 40:19Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 40:19Speaker 01

Then there's possibility of getting rejected.

• 40:21Speaker 04

No, if the praise is coming for

• 40:24Speaker 01

grr, like indicating anger or, oh, I'm sad.

• 40:30Speaker 04

I'm not buying it. It's bad.

• 40:32Speaker 01

  Right.

• 40:33Dax Shepard?

You were like, bad as being rewarded.

• 40:35Speaker 04

The teacher is really just trying to make people feel safe and comfortable.

• 40:41Speaker 01

  Right.

• 40:42Speaker 04

Mm hmm. And so for me, it was, well, how will I ever be able to trust her? I'm going to think I'm great. And then I'm going to have horrible habits. I'm just going to become good at being bad.

• 40:53Speaker 01

  Right.

• 40:54Speaker 04

That's not what I am hoping to learn to do.

• 40:57Dax Shepard?

  You need the truth.

• 40:58Speaker 04

And then I need an example. I learn best by example. So what does it look like when you're doing it right? Cause Robert De Niro isn't doing Spaceballer Lift a Disc right now for me to see.

• 41:09Dax Shepard?

And Conan was doing it right.

• 41:12Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 41:12Dax Shepard?

He told the cutest story. I'll earmark that. I'm going to save that. When you were on his show.

• 41:17Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 41:18Dax Shepard?

I'll just say it now, but you telling him how thrilled you were to meet Matthew Perry and how hysterical he was. And you're going on and on about how special and funny he was. And he admitted to you when he interviewed you, he's like, I just started feeling like, who is this guy? And why is he so, my Gene Cordero thing?

• 41:34Speaker 01

  Oh, sure.

• 41:34Dax Shepard?

Kristen and Monica love Gene Cordero.

• 41:36Speaker 01

  No, his name is Eugene.

• 41:38Dax Shepard?

I started calling him Mean Gene Cordero. That's not his name, but because I'm threatened by how funny he is. They would just regale all the time, how funny he was.

• 41:45Speaker 04

Okay, yeah. Well, cause Conan was, was.

• 41:50Speaker 04

  Has always been.

• 41:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:51Speaker 04

And that's not a lie. The funniest person I'd ever met.

• 41:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:55Speaker 04

  Ever.

• 41:56Dax Shepard?

Well, you stumbled into one who historically will go down as one of the funniest.

• 42:00Speaker 04

  People ever.

• 42:02Dax Shepard?

  Of all time.

• 42:02Speaker 01

You just ran into him at an improv class. That's so bizarre.

• 42:06Speaker 04

Yeah. And we'd go to parties like, well, he's the best to bring to a party. Cause he makes everyone so comfortable. He's so hilarious and he's, I think, one of the smartest people I've ever met.

• 42:16Dax Shepard?

That was my hunch is I bet, sure, you were attracted to the comedic ability of him, but I imagine how brilliant he is, is what really

• 42:24Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:25Dax Shepard?

made you want to be friends and

• 42:26Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:26Dax Shepard?

  Eventually lovers, as we discovered.

• 42:28Speaker 01

  For three months.

• 42:29Speaker 04

  Three hot, steamy months.

• 42:32Dax Shepard?

You then started going through the actual program at the Groundlings.

• 42:35Speaker 04

Yeah, we got accepted into paying them money for the basic class. We were allowed to do that, but we weren't in the same class. And everyone knew we were close friends. I always suspected that had something to do with if people thought there was anything good about me because I sort of had Conan's endorsement and he was already really respected. He was gonna get in.

• 42:57Dax Shepard?

  He left, right?

• 42:58Speaker 04

He was in the advanced class. Is that called third level? I don't know. The advanced class.

• 43:01Dax Shepard?

  No, I think that's fourth.

• 43:02Speaker 04

And from there you get voted into the Sunday company and you do two sort of showcases. After that first performance in that advanced class, he and his writing partner, Greg Daniels.

• 43:15Speaker 01

  What?

• 43:15Speaker 04

  Yeah, you didn't know that?

• 43:16Speaker 01

I don't think I knew that, or did I? Or maybe I forgot.

• 43:19Dax Shepard?

  You fucking dumbass.

• 43:20Speaker 04

Can we just do this whole thing about Conan?

• 43:23Speaker 04

No, but they got invited to write on Saturday Night Live.

• 43:26Dax Shepard?

Oh, it wasn't Simpsons first? It was Saturday Night Live first?

• 43:28Speaker 04

Saturday Night Live. So they had to go to New York.

• 43:31Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 43:32Speaker 04

  And that's why Conan wasn't a Groundling.

• 43:35Dax Shepard?

On this episode, we answer the burning question, why wasn't Conan a Groundling?

• 43:40Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 43:41Dax Shepard?

How far into the main company before you got an audition for SNL?

• 43:45Speaker 04

I didn't get an official audition. I was just told Lorraine Newman had seen me at the Groundlings and she thought I was good.

• 43:54Dax Shepard?

Was she a scout for SNL?

• 43:55Speaker 04

No, but she let me know, she let them know to pay attention or come see me. They were coming out to look at Julia Sweeney and I think she was letting them know. Look at her too.

• 44:09Dax Shepard?

So you knew that before the show?

• 44:11Speaker 04

  Before the show.

• 44:11Dax Shepard?

  Did that make you nervous?

• 44:13Speaker 04

It made me nervous because that was gonna be life changing.

• 44:17Dax Shepard?

Were you focused on being on SNL? Was that something you wanted to do?

• 44:20Speaker 04

I wasn't gonna say no to that.

• 44:22Speaker 01

  But it wasn't your only?

• 44:23Dax Shepard?

You wanted to act and be in things.

• 44:24Speaker 04

I thought I should probably be on a sitcom. I mean, I wasn't getting any auditions or anything at that point at all. And Saturday Night Live was good too.

• 44:36Speaker 04

Duh, you know, oh my god. You'll take it. It's one of the coolest.

• 44:40Dax Shepard?

It's like joining the Beatles or something.

• 44:42Speaker 04

And I remember calling Conan because he was writing there. And I said, can you put in a good word or anything? He was like, no, because that's a different no.

• 44:52Dax Shepard?

It might make it go worse for you. That's the real answer.

• 44:55Speaker 04

Also, he may have known, I kind of look at Julia Sweeney. That's kind of the entire story.

• 45:02Dax Shepard?

So you didn't fly to New York and do the whole thing?

• 45:04Speaker 04

  No.

• 45:05Dax Shepard?

  They were in the audience.

• 45:06Speaker 04

They were in the audience and I thought, I'm having it. They're here to see me too.

• 45:10Dax Shepard?

Right, right, right, right. Were there any dudes that went to SNL while you were there?

• 45:14Speaker 04

No, but I'm usually wrong. I don't remember things well. I just know, yeah, Julia Sweeney, that's all I know.

• 45:19Dax Shepard?

That's who went to SNL while you were there.

• 45:20Speaker 04

But I know, because I was a grounding, I voted in Will Ferrell. Oh.

• 45:24Dax Shepard?

Get out. It's so weird to think of him in the Sunday company. It's almost like he's too much of a god to have possibly done that. Was he outrageously good as we came to know him on SNL?

• 45:33Speaker 04

Yeah, that wasn't even a question for anyone voting. Everything you need here.

• 45:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 45:40Speaker 04

  Will Ferrell.

• 45:41Dax Shepard?

Okay, you're on Cheers in 1989.

• 45:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 45:44Dax Shepard?

You are, congratulations. Did you know this?

• 45:46Speaker 04

No, I did, but I don't know what year.

• 45:49Dax Shepard?

Were you in the Groundlings when you were on Cheers?

• 45:52Speaker 04

  Yeah. Wait, was I? No.

• 45:54Dax Shepard?

  You weren't.

• 45:55Speaker 04

That's why I got voted in.

• 45:57Dax Shepard?

Oh, because you were on Cheers?

• 45:59Speaker 04

No, I was in a play, Ladies Room. That Robin Schiff, who was a grounding, she wrote it. It was really successful. And then I got to be in a movie with Teresa Russell, directed by Sandra Locke. I got cut out of it, but it was not comedy either. And I got to audition for so many things.

• 46:18Dax Shepard?

  Because of a sketch?

• 46:19Speaker 04

  Because of that play.

• 46:19Dax Shepard?

  Oh, the play.

• 46:20Speaker 04

  A play. Ladies Room.

• 46:22Dax Shepard?

I don't know about Ladies Room.

• 46:23Speaker 04

  It was a play.

• 46:24Dax Shepard?

  Okay. Where you play.

• 46:27Speaker 04

At the Tiffany Theater, which was the Equity Waiver Theater in LA. And it ran forever. And it was me and this girl, Kristy Miller, who was also in the grounding program.

• 46:37Dax Shepard?

  Boy, Kristy Miller, who's.

• 46:38Speaker 04

  Kristy.

• 46:39Dax Shepard?

  Oh, not Krista.

• 46:40Speaker 04

Kristy Miller. And at first, the characters were called Airhead one, Airhead two. We were total of like five. Five minutes in and out of the stage. Then the play is backed by Aaron Spelling and

• 46:51Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 46:51Speaker 04

Douglas Kramer. And they give the characters names, Romeo and Michelle.

• 46:56Speaker 01

  Stop.

• 46:57Dax Shepard?

  Oh, come on.

• 46:58Speaker 01

I was about to say Airhead one, Airhead two, Romeo and Michelle.

• 47:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 47:02Speaker 01

So they made it later into the movie?

• 47:04Dax Shepard?

  But years later, after Friends.

• 47:05Speaker 01

  So much later.

• 47:06Speaker 04

Oh, my God. So much later.

• 47:09Speaker 01

  You're living in.

• 47:10Speaker 04

There's a bad pilot with Romeo and Michelle that Spelling Kramer made. It's not great. Because I realize I kept saying so bad and that's unkind.

• 47:20Dax Shepard?

  Right. Everyone tried their hardest.

• 47:22Speaker 04

  Sure, sure.

• 47:24Dax Shepard?

That's in between, I imagine, Cheers and Friends. You do two pilots between Cheers and Friends.

• 47:30Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 47:31Dax Shepard?

  Congratulations.

• 47:31Speaker 04

  That's before Cheers.

• 47:33Dax Shepard?

This is before Cheers that you made a pilot?

• 47:34Speaker 04

Either right before or around the same time because I knew one of them. I wasn't a SAG member, so you had to get two jobs. I had to get Taft Heart Lead and then join.

• 47:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:45Speaker 04

Or something like that. So it was Cheers and Romeo and Michelle, but it was called Temporarily Yours.

• 47:51Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 47:52Dax Shepard?

  Temporarily Yours.

• 47:53Speaker 04

That's why I got into Groundlings.

• 47:55Dax Shepard?

  Because you had done.

• 47:56Speaker 04

I was ready to hand it over to, I think, because I was friends with Conan.

• 48:00Speaker 01

I think it's because you were good. Can you not just take that?

• 48:06Dax Shepard?

I think you're a fraud. I'm with you on this one.

• 48:08Speaker 04

No, it's not that I think I was bad.

• 48:10Dax Shepard?

Could you be misled by the fact that you were with Sweeney on stage?

• 48:14Speaker 04

Yes, I mean, I do know peers thought, that's funny. But I was not a crowd pleaser with the grounding audience. I wasn't doing like fright wigs and blackened teeth, you know?

• 48:25Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 48:25Speaker 01

Yeah, you were embarrassed by that.

• 48:26Speaker 04

  I wasn't. I mean.

• 48:28Speaker 01

  I would have been.

• 48:29Speaker 04

Did one sort of like that.

• 48:32Speaker 01

If people could see your face.

• 48:34Speaker 04

  One time.

• 48:34Dax Shepard?

You're almost throwing up. You're kind of holding back a bonnet.

• 48:37Speaker 04

One time. But I was trying to be clever, by the way. Pat Sajak had a late night show.

• 48:43Dax Shepard?

Oh, yes, for a minute, a talk show.

• 48:44Speaker 04

For a minute. And he was going to start having sketches. And so they wanted Groundlings to come do sketches. So they came to watch a show. And the director of the main company at the time, I was smoking and I was going to go get cigarettes. He goes, let me walk with you. I was like, oh, I didn't think he liked me at all. All right. And we're walking, he says, so Pat Sajak people were out here and they watched the show. So they liked Julia, of course, Sweeney. I went, yeah, yeah. He said.

• 49:09Dax Shepard?

  Everyone does.

• 49:09Speaker 04

And I don't even understand any of this, but you.

• 49:14Speaker 04

  Oh my god.

• 49:16Dax Shepard?

  What a sweetheart.

• 49:16Speaker 04

And he really did say it like that because I remember thinking manners at least.

• 49:21Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 49:22Speaker 04

But all right, I went, huh. I think he said, this is crazy. I said, yeah, wow, that is crazy.

• 49:29Speaker 04

  Geez.

• 49:30Dax Shepard?

You know, having fun on stage is really contagious.

• 49:33Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 49:34Dax Shepard?

I skipped one part and I just need to know because selfishly I'm left handed. So a lot of the work, you did a study with your father for eight years and part of the study was to see if left handed people had cluster headaches at an inordinate rate.

• 49:47Speaker 04

  Close.

• 49:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 49:49Speaker 04

  Yes, and.

• 49:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you were born in 1983. Yes, and also I was not.

• 50:00Speaker 04

And I could see how you might be confused with that because an eight and a six have circles in them.

• 50:06Dax Shepard?

  That's exactly right.

• 50:08Speaker 04

And that is why I was a fine improviser.

• 50:11Dax Shepard?

  Very good.

• 50:12Speaker 04

Anyway, it was to see if there was any association between hemispheric dominance.

• 50:18Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 50:18Speaker 04

Handiness and headache types. So it wasn't just cluster headache.

• 50:23Dax Shepard?

My understanding is that your right hemisphere controls your left hand.

• 50:26Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 50:27Dax Shepard?

So did cluster headaches show up more in the right hemisphere over the left hemisphere? Was that discovered?

• 50:32Speaker 04

  No.

• 50:32Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 50:33Speaker 04

It was just to see if people who were right hemispheric dominant had more cluster headache. But it was every headache amongst all headache types. But the answer was no.

• 50:45Dax Shepard?

Okay, that's what you found out. Now let me ask you this. Because headaches were such a topic in the house, it would have given me a self fulfilling prophecy that I was going to get headaches. Did that happen to you at all?

• 50:56Speaker 04

  No.

• 50:57Dax Shepard?

I would have been like overly concerned about headaches because this is like the primary concern of my father.

• 51:01Speaker 04

  No.

• 51:04Speaker 04

He was concerned, not concerned, but he was interested in headache because he got almost every headache type.

• 51:09Dax Shepard?

Oh, he did. What is the explanation?

• 51:12Speaker 04

It's a complicated explanation that has to do with, if it holds, it's his theory, which was impressive because he had the first working theory, that it had to do with some damn. Damage to the hypothalamus. Mostly men had cluster headache and that the damage may have come from burning the candle on both ends was his theory at the time. But I don't think stress brought on the cluster headaches. I think it was a circadian or circannual rhythm thing for episodic cluster. And people who had it chronically all the time.

• 51:46Dax Shepard?

Could those people discover a pattern? Or were they completely random?

• 51:49Speaker 04

Well, the pattern had to do with the light changing.

• 51:54Speaker 01

A lot of them are hormone related too, right?

• 51:56Speaker 04

  Migraines, but not cluster headaches.

• 51:59Dax Shepard?

  Those female skew, don't they?

• 52:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 52:01Speaker 01

  Which would make sense.

• 52:02Speaker 04

Men who get headaches, well, young men. And then as you get older, if I'm remembering it right, because I worked there for eight years. Guys get older, their headaches go away.

• 52:12Dax Shepard?

They go away because my daughter has a lot of headaches. I don't know about a lot. She has more than average.

• 52:18Speaker 04

  Is she adolescent?

• 52:19Dax Shepard?

  She's a woman. She's 11.

• 52:21Speaker 04

  But there are hormones, maybe.

• 52:23Dax Shepard?

She's 11 and things are starting to happen.

• 52:25Speaker 04

Sorry. No, I mean, I'm sorry.

• 52:29Speaker 04

Look at me now, it's like, no, no, I'm not, no joking. This isn't funny. Everything's very serious. Come on.

• 52:35Dax Shepard?

I would have been happy to have a good time with you, but you brought up headaches. Yeah, I had them when I was younger, but I don't really have. If I have one now, it's very, very rare and I'm so grateful because they're fucking miserable.

• 52:44Speaker 04

They are, but they've got good treatments now.

• 52:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I know people, they do injections when the shit hits the fan.

• 52:49Speaker 04

Yeah, there's those migraines, you know, like hemiplegic migraines or I don't know. Maybe they don't call those anymore, but half of the face or body gets paralyzed. And the scary thing is when it happens, you think, uh, think you gotta get a brain scan.

• 53:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:04Dax Shepard?

  Stroke.

• 53:05Speaker 04

  What's happening, but it's not.

• 53:07Dax Shepard?

Whoa, is like there's too much electrical activity going on?

• 53:10Speaker 04

My brother's a neurologist and he now is the headache specialist. And he had just explained it. And now because of my age, I don't remember what he said.

• 53:19Dax Shepard?

Right, but that's a joy because he can explain to you all over again. I bet he loves explaining it and you'll love learning it all over again. This is very symbiotic. He does.

• 53:27Speaker 01

  Okay. How cool for him.

• 53:29Dax Shepard?

You said he's a man. He loves to explain things, trust me. As I explain this to you right now, I know the same tickle he's getting.

• 53:38Dax Shepard?

  Got meta.

• 53:39Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 53:42Dax Shepard?

  We're the worst.

• 53:42Speaker 04

  Cannibalistically meta.

• 53:45Dax Shepard?

Okay, I want to talk about this kind of interesting and sim-like.

• 53:49Speaker 01

Your life is a sim for sure. You meet Conan on your first day of, do you believe in the sim?

• 53:54Speaker 04

  What does that mean?

• 53:55Dax Shepard?

  Simulation.

• 53:56Speaker 04

Simulation, right. What do you mean?

• 53:58Speaker 01

Like, do you think you're living in one?

• 53:59Dax Shepard?

You have a carcass somewhere plugged into a computer and it's giving you this experience?

• 54:03Speaker 04

  I do now.

• 54:05Speaker 01

  I mean, you-

• 54:05Dax Shepard?

  I didn't till today.

• 54:06Speaker 01

  You should.

• 54:08Dax Shepard?

That's all it took, is a simple explanation of where you're-

• 54:11Speaker 04

  I heard it once.

• 54:13Speaker 01

You've experienced a lot of one of one things.

• 54:15Dax Shepard?

I think if you have a lot of suspicious stuff happen in your life, you're probably more prone to think like, what's going on? We don't really believe in the sim, but also we 30% do. Yeah, we play around with the notion that we're plugged in somewhere.

• 54:26Speaker 04

I'm processing everything you're saying and trying to figure how it's the same as the way I see things. Cause I do think that there's too much we don't know. So it could be that. It could be God. It could be anything.

• 54:39Dax Shepard?

  Something stinks.

• 54:40Speaker 04

I don't know if something stinks. I think that what stinks is that we require to measure it, see it, describe it, define it.

• 54:49Speaker 01

  We need to know.

• 54:50Dax Shepard?

  You're using science words.

• 54:52Speaker 04

In order to accept it, when the one thing I learned from science and scientific method is there's more we don't know than we do know. So just because you can't, doesn't mean it's not happening.

• 55:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:07Dax Shepard?

We have the tiniest sliver of data, really.

• 55:10Speaker 01

We're so limited in our senses.

• 55:12Dax Shepard?

We have these five, and if you really ponder it, if no one had sight and you didn't have sight, it's completely unimaginable. Nobody could expand their fucking imagination enough to imagine what sight is, or hearing, or taste, or touch. So yeah, conceivably, there's like 12 other ways to observe reality that we just don't observe.

• 55:30Speaker 04

That's what I think. There are things we can't explain that we've just known.

• 55:35Dax Shepard?

Well, let me ask you this. Have you had those moments? Cause you've had a very exceptional life and you go like, well, how do I make peace with this? This is an abnormal amount of, you know.

• 55:43Speaker 04

  Of-

• 55:44Dax Shepard?

For me, I would call it like luck.

• 55:45Speaker 04

  Things I couldn't have imagined.

• 55:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 55:48Speaker 04

Yeah. Well, okay. Here's the thing. When, there was no way I was going to be an actress and I was in college. And my plan even on graduation was I'm going to go to graduate school and study evolutionary theory. Not going to be a doctor. That's fine. I'd come home for spring breaks.

• 56:07Speaker 04

And I'd be driving around in LA and you'd hear on the radio a commercial for a new sitcom or a sitcom and they're promoting it with their best joke. I have huge quote marks. I'm waving like a lunatic with the quotes.

• 56:20Dax Shepard?

  Pelican flapping its wings.

• 56:23Speaker 04

I'm driving along and I'd hear that joke, which would just be like, well, that's what she said last time. And I think, oh my God, why did I have to like hit it so hard? Can't they just throw it away? Well, that's what she said last time. And then, and then, and then the thought was, Lisa, please remember to throw it away when you do it.

• 56:49Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 56:50Speaker 04

And I went, what? I'm not doing that.

• 56:53Speaker 01

  Right. But you always were.

• 56:55Speaker 04

And then other things like that. I'd watch David Letterman and watch someone who was being very, very phony. You know, that's not the way they talked. Not really. No. Oh, I love that. I love that. You know, like that kind of thing. And I thought, oh my God, Lisa, when you're on Letterman, please try to be yourself. I'm like, yeah. Wait, when am I going to be on Letterman? For what? The latest evolutionary theory? Am I going to come up with some world altering?

• 57:22Dax Shepard?

The fifth tallest biology graduate from Vassar. Put your hands together for the fifth tallest.

• 57:29Speaker 04

I don't know how to explain those things.

• 57:32Dax Shepard?

I'm feeling very seen by the notion, and this is a terrible thing to admit, but it has been a great source of confidence for me. I watch stuff and I think, well, that's not very good. Maybe I can do it. So much of my propulsion has been seeing something I don't think is very good. So then I think, well, shit, then I think maybe I could do it.

• 57:51Speaker 04

Oh, you think that's what I was experiencing?

• 57:53Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 57:54Speaker 04

  I don't.

• 57:55Dax Shepard?

You would go to an improv show and you go like, that's not very good. I have so much fear that I'm not good enough. But when I see something bad, it would weirdly encourage me and go like, no, no, this might be doable. And so you're hearing shitty acting on the radio and something in you that tells you, I know that's not good. That's weirdly confidence building. Does that make any sense to you?

• 58:14Speaker 04

  It does.

• 58:15Dax Shepard?

But you don't relate to it.

• 58:17Speaker 04

I don't feel like that was that part of me responding. It felt like it was someone else saying, Lisa, when you do it. But it wasn't a voice. It wasn't anything else. It was a thought in my head. But to respond to it like, wait, what are you saying? What does that mean?

• 58:33Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 58:33Speaker 04

Sometimes I just know what I know. Although now I'm feeling like an idiot.

• 58:37Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 58:38Speaker 01

  No.

• 58:38Speaker 04

  After talking to you.

• 58:39Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 58:40Speaker 04

That, oh, yeah. She studied science and she thinks that something in the cosmos is talking to her. But it did feel like such a strong feeling that shouldn't rationally be there.

• 58:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:52Dax Shepard?

And you kind of would listen to it, which is good.

• 58:54Speaker 04

  I didn't. I rejected it.

• 58:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:56Speaker 04

Until Lovitz. And it was very practical. I'm 22. I don't have a mortgage. I don't have any responsibility. Now's the time to try that. And you don't want to have any regrets. I'd forgotten about those other things.

• 59:08Dax Shepard?

Now, this is a childhood question. It's related to the truth and it's related to watching the people be phony. Now, it could be as inane as you're a younger sibling. I'm a younger sibling. My older sibling tried to deceive me all the time because that's how it works.

• 59:23Speaker 04

Right. You're the least competent person in the household. So you have the least respect.

• 59:27Dax Shepard?

  You're the dumbass.

• 59:28Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 59:29Dax Shepard?

And everyone's getting something you're not getting all the time. And you want to fake it like you are. Do you relate to that observation, which is it's very important to you to know what's real and what's not?

• 59:38Speaker 04

  Ooh, I used to.

• 59:41Dax Shepard?

And do you think that's childhood stuff or just your biochemistry?

• 59:45Speaker 04

I don't know. Things shift and change in me all the time. What's important, who I am, what kind of mood I'm in, either very analytical or I'm very like, you know, it doesn't matter. It's okay. You'll rise to the occasion. I feel like a different person. And Diane Keaton once said to me a long time ago, something like, I was 25. I was a different person. Well, don't you feel like you're the same person? No, I've been so many different people.

• 1:00:11Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:00:13Speaker 04

Of course not. We've all been so many different people at different times.

• 1:00:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And if you like Buddhism at all, which I'm very newly into reading about, yeah, we are a product of whatever context we're in. We're not even the same person throughout the day. You go to the grocery store and shit's popping off and there's an argument over here and there's some version of you that's there. That's not the version of you at dinnertime later.

• 1:00:33Speaker 04

Or just some important beliefs shift.

• 1:00:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Sometimes you care a ton about something and then other times you're like, I don't even care about that.

• 1:00:40Speaker 01

It's also good. You don't want to be so stuck in the thing you were saying when you were 16. We're supposed to evolve.

• 1:00:46Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Not being married to all these cornerstone beliefs we think that define us.

• 1:00:51Speaker 04

  Definitely.

• 1:00:51Dax Shepard?

Malcolm Gladwell says, hold your opinions loosely.

• 1:00:54Speaker 04

I agree with that, but what about core beliefs? Beliefs and opinions are different, aren't they?

• 1:00:59Speaker 01

Values and opinions are different for sure.

• 1:01:02Dax Shepard?

Would I be right in guessing the permanence of the role as mom is something unique? It feels like Bedrock to me.

• 1:01:08Speaker 04

There's a higher order. Something shifted in the list of priorities.

• 1:01:13Dax Shepard?

And you can feel it's permanent and you're like, oh yeah, there'll be no wavering. And this is a unique feeling, other than when you get a tattoo and you go like, okay, put it on. You go like, yep, well, that's a permanent decision. There's very few of those in life.

• 1:01:25Speaker 04

Yeah, I don't have any tattoos.

• 1:01:27Dax Shepard?

  I'll give you one.

• 1:01:27Speaker 04

Cause I don't like permanent decisions, except for my son.

• 1:01:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:32Dax Shepard?

Okay. So I just wanted to point out this Jimmy Burrows thing, because this is another simulationy kind of thing. You go to Cheers and a very cute conversation with you and Ted, talking about you being there all week and just staying on set the entire time.

• 1:01:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:01:44Dax Shepard?

  To learn what was happening.

• 1:01:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:01:45Dax Shepard?

But Burrows, of course, is directing that show. So you have some experience with them there and then you get cast in Frasier.

• 1:01:52Speaker 04

Right. They made a mistake. And then they corrected the mistake.

• 1:01:56Dax Shepard?

  And what happens?

• 1:01:57Speaker 01

  As a lead?

• 1:01:57Speaker 04

  Series regular.

• 1:01:58Dax Shepard?

  She was playing Frasier.

• 1:01:59Speaker 04

  You're set.

• 1:01:59Speaker 01

  Oh, you're Frasier.

• 1:02:02Speaker 04

They made a mistake and then they corrected it like, no, let's stick with Kelsey.

• 1:02:08Dax Shepard?

I mean, he's already established on the other show.

• 1:02:10Speaker 01

  She's like, I love him.

• 1:02:12Speaker 04

  It was a funny idea.

• 1:02:14Speaker 06

  Don't mess with what's.

• 1:02:14Speaker 04

No, the Roz character, I mean, they, I think, had Perry Gilpin in mind when they wrote the part and she and I were the ones that went to the network. And I just sort of changed their mind for a minute and that was a mistake.

• 1:02:27Speaker 06

  They reversed course.

• 1:02:29Dax Shepard?

How deep into the process did you get before you were replaced?

• 1:02:32Speaker 04

A couple of days before shooting. I don't know, halfway through the pilot week?

• 1:02:36Dax Shepard?

For sure, for you at that moment, career wise, he's coming off of cheers. This is just, show's gonna work.

• 1:02:42Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:02:42Dax Shepard?

You must have been like, okay, back to the, like, everything's about to be fixed.

• 1:02:47Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:02:47Dax Shepard?

What was the heartbreak of that? Was it devastating? How'd you handle it?

• 1:02:50Speaker 04

I did think I might be one of those people for whom this isn't gonna work out. Am I? I am. Am I, though? I don't know.

• 1:02:59Dax Shepard?

How did you find your way back to some level of confidence?

• 1:03:04Speaker 04

  Grief starts to wane.

• 1:03:05Dax Shepard?

  Time passes.

• 1:03:06Speaker 04

Yeah, and I would just get up every morning and walk. And then, at the end of the walk, I lived near Michelle Richard at the time. It was a great little cafe and they had pan au chocolat. And I'm gonna have one of those at the end of my walk. And as I'm out there walking, the sun is bleaching my hair and it's getting a little lighter, so I'm getting some lighter highlights.

• 1:03:27Dax Shepard?

  Beautiful.

• 1:03:27Speaker 04

And I'm just, in every way, lightening up. And I have friends that I'm talking to who are saying like, oh, my God, you're leaving the house. That's amazing. To me, it was support and encouragement, like, well, you're doing great. Look, one door closes, another one opens. And then, I think it's that one thing that I was told, that it's, then what else will you do? And I could always just go back to school, get caught up in whatever's happening in evolutionary biology, take whatever classes I have to take and just continue on that path. And that was never an option. I knew I wasn't gonna do that and that this is really what I wanted to do.

• 1:04:05Dax Shepard?

Yeah. How long between getting fired, again, by Jimmy Burrows, before Friends?

• 1:04:10Speaker 04

  A year? I don't know. I'm bad with this.

• 1:04:12Dax Shepard?

Maybe people know this. I didn't know any of this. I find this really fascinating. So you audition for Friends and Jimmy Burrows is gonna be the director. And your last experience with him was that you were fired.

• 1:04:24Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:04:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's scary.

• 1:04:25Speaker 04

And I really thought, I'm not his cup of tea.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, he doesn't like me.

• 1:04:29Speaker 04

I'm not for him. How much of a say does he have in things? Right? You know, and it seemed like, oh, maybe a lot. And so I had to audition. I auditioned for just Jimmy. One of my auditions was in a room, just Jim Burrows. And I'm doing the audition and he says, no notes. And I walk out going, that either means I give up, she's helpless, or it was perfect. I have no notes. And then it's, I'll find out soon.

• 1:04:57Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:04:57Speaker 04

It doesn't matter. What can I do?

• 1:04:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:59Dax Shepard?

  It's over.

• 1:04:59Speaker 04

Yeah. I don't know how many years ago this was, less than 10, I think. And there's something for Jim Burrows, like a special something. And I think it's even broadcast and the six of us, cast members are with him. That's where I think I said like, yeah, well, I don't audition. Remember the audition we all had?

• 1:05:17Dax Shepard?

  The round with just Jim?

• 1:05:18Speaker 04

Just Jimmy? And everyone, no, I didn't have that.

• 1:05:23Dax Shepard?

He took one look at a tape of them and they're like, oh yeah, that's him.

• 1:05:26Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:05:26Speaker 04

  I was the only one.

• 1:05:28Dax Shepard?

It's a blessing you didn't know that until 10 years ago.

• 1:05:31Speaker 04

I thought, this is that crazy insecurity. You think he needed to see you because it didn't work out on the last thing. Yeah, it's just part of the audition process.

• 1:05:39Speaker 01

It's just part of everyone for this.

• 1:05:40Speaker 04

  Why don't you calm down?

• 1:05:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you're talking yourself out of being crazy.

• 1:05:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:05:46Dax Shepard?

You're like, you're not even that important. None of this matters that much. You've made this something that's not.

• 1:05:50Speaker 04

And in fact, they did need to check with Jimmy.

• 1:05:53Dax Shepard?

  You were spot on.

• 1:05:54Speaker 04

Is it all right? Cause we think she's pretty good.

• 1:05:57Dax Shepard?

And then this crazy thing happens in the table read.

• 1:06:00Speaker 04

  The table read?

• 1:06:01Dax Shepard?

  For Friends.

• 1:06:02Speaker 04

  Did it?

• 1:06:03Dax Shepard?

  Where he suggests you.

• 1:06:04Speaker 04

No, not the table read, one of the rehearsals.

• 1:06:06Speaker 01

  For the pilot?

• 1:06:07Speaker 04

For the pilot where Rachel is about to cut up credit cards and we're all sitting around the kitchen table. And he thinks, oh, you know, it'll be fun. At least get under the table. What?

• 1:06:19Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 1:06:19Speaker 04

What do you mean? Let's sit under the table. And I'm climbing down.

• 1:06:23Speaker 01

  For what?

• 1:06:23Speaker 04

I'm just like shoving myself under the kitchen table. And I said, I can't see anybody. He's like, yeah, but it's funny. That's all right.

• 1:06:30Speaker 01

  Oh, boy.

• 1:06:31Dax Shepard?

And when I heard you retell us before, you're feeling right because I don't belong here.

• 1:06:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:36Dax Shepard?

You don't think I belong here. And now you're physically.

• 1:06:39Speaker 01

  Removing me.

• 1:06:40Dax Shepard?

Putting me where it's now visually obvious I don't belong here. Right? It was like a very triggering.

• 1:06:45Speaker 04

  Well, yeah.

• 1:06:46Dax Shepard?

  Confirmation that he hated you.

• 1:06:47Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 1:06:48Dax Shepard?

He doesn't want me in the scene.

• 1:06:50Speaker 04

Because one of the issues with the character, it's like, how do we let the audience know why they're friends with her?

• 1:06:56Speaker 01

  Right, right, right.

• 1:06:57Speaker 04

  Because she's so different.

• 1:06:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:59Speaker 04

And I don't know that this helps that.

• 1:07:03Speaker 04

So we do the run through and David Crane, who's so nice. He's like, OK, that was good. Lisa, it's funny that you're under the table. I don't know that that works. And I'm thinking, he thinks this was my idea.

• 1:07:16Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:07:17Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 1:07:18Speaker 04

Oh, no. He thinks it's my idea.

• 1:07:20Dax Shepard?

On top of it not working, it was my bad idea.

• 1:07:23Speaker 04

  And now.

• 1:07:23Speaker 01

  This is so stressful.

• 1:07:24Speaker 04

They won't be able to trust any of my instincts.

• 1:07:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:28Speaker 04

Yeah. And then Jimmy says, no, no, that was my idea.

• 1:07:33Speaker 01

  OK, thank God.

• 1:07:34Speaker 04

Right. I went, oh, thank you, thank you, thank you. He's like, we were just trying it.

• 1:07:38Dax Shepard?

This is a turning point, though.

• 1:07:39Speaker 04

She doesn't have to do it. Yeah. In his book, he wrote, like, she needed to trust me. So I needed to show her.

• 1:07:45Speaker 01

  Like, it was all calculated?

• 1:07:47Speaker 04

I don't think the whole thing. What do I know? OK, I didn't know. I was the only one auditioning for him. The hell do I know? I thought a ghost from the past came to tell me to be an actress.

• 1:07:58Dax Shepard?

For people who don't know, Jimmy Burrows is, by all accounts, the very most successful director to ever be in television by a landslide. Every show you ever loved, he directed either the pilot or the whole thing.

• 1:08:09Speaker 04

  And still.

• 1:08:10Dax Shepard?

  It's impossible.

• 1:08:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:08:27Dax Shepard?

When you're not pleasing this person, it couldn't get worse.

• 1:08:31Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 1:08:31Dax Shepard?

You've got to trust that he's right.

• 1:08:34Speaker 04

But he'll be the first to say, it's just a pitch. 50% of them don't work.

• 1:08:39Dax Shepard?

  Right, right, right.

• 1:08:40Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:08:41Dax Shepard?

So that was a turning point and then things got better. And as you said, you grew to absolutely love him, right?

• 1:08:47Speaker 04

Well, yeah. Then he was so fantastic because I did this show, The Comeback, and asked him to be Jimmy, the director, because it was him.

• 1:08:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, to act.

• 1:08:59Speaker 04

  And he did it.

• 1:09:00Dax Shepard?

  Had he ever?

• 1:09:01Speaker 04

He was fantastic. I think, no.

• 1:09:03Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:09:04Dax Shepard?

  He was himself?

• 1:09:05Speaker 04

  Yeah, it was so great.

• 1:09:07Dax Shepard?

Now, let me ask you this, because you do it so gracefully and it appears to me that you don't ever mind it, but it occurred to me, there are things that I got sick of talking about. What is just your overall feeling about talking about friends?

• 1:09:20Speaker 04

  It's a blessing.

• 1:09:21Dax Shepard?

Was there ever a period where you're like, please shut up about friends?

• 1:09:23Speaker 04

  No, because I'm too grateful.

• 1:09:25Dax Shepard?

Well, that's nice, though. I should have been grateful for all the things, but sometimes it took me a while to be grateful.

• 1:09:30Speaker 04

  That's all right.

• 1:09:31Dax Shepard?

  Okay, you forgive me?

• 1:09:33Speaker 04

  Well, I hope you do.

• 1:09:34Dax Shepard?

Are you going to fire me from this table?

• 1:09:37Speaker 01

But is part of that because the experience itself was so fulfilling?

• 1:09:41Speaker 04

Yeah, it was great. We really did get along.

• 1:09:44Speaker 01

It's that thing that you were talking about at Groundlings where you can read when people are having fun. That show is so special in that way.

• 1:09:51Speaker 04

We also worked hard at being friends. That six-way relationship took some work and we did it.

• 1:09:58Dax Shepard?

What did that look like? Just like going out for dinners and stuff or being social?

• 1:10:02Speaker 04

Really talking things through. If someone said something or did something, it didn't get too big because it was, can I talk to you? Usually not me, because I had to learn to be, can I talk to you about something?

• 1:10:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:15Speaker 04

Because I never knew that was allowed, but I saw it modeled really well by Courtney and Jennifer and Matt.

• 1:10:21Speaker 01

Yeah, communication, like rule number one in any relationship.

• 1:10:24Speaker 04

  Yeah, and respectful communication.

• 1:10:26Dax Shepard?

So knowing you were entering this situation where this guy was going to direct you who had fired you recently, what was your confidence level going into that?

• 1:10:34Speaker 04

  Cautious.

• 1:10:34Dax Shepard?

Now, this maybe is a rude question, but was it at all on your mind that you were the oldest member of that group?

• 1:10:41Speaker 04

  Yeah, by a year.

• 1:10:42Dax Shepard?

I know, but in your 20s, that feels like something.

• 1:10:45Speaker 04

  Right. Well, I was 30.

• 1:10:47Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:10:48Speaker 04

  30 or 31? Thirty one.

• 1:10:51Dax Shepard?

There's like panic on your face like.

• 1:10:52Speaker 04

I was thirty and a half.

• 1:10:54Dax Shepard?

Okay, okay. Thirty and a half.

• 1:10:56Speaker 04

  Right? Yeah.

• 1:10:57Dax Shepard?

Oh, well, I can tell you I do math very well.

• 1:11:00Speaker 04

I was ninety four, May of ninety four. July is my birthday, so I wasn't thirty one. I was thirty.

• 1:11:05Speaker 01

  You were thirty.

• 1:11:05Speaker 04

Oh, my God. It's this kind of detail that is fascinating.

• 1:11:10Dax Shepard?

Now, it means nothing, but when you're thirty and this is your big shot and you've been chipping away and it's hard and you got fired before, the stakes feel so fucking high. You don't know at that point you're going to follow Seinfeld, do you? Or do you? Like, do you know this thing's going to be given the best shot imaginable?

• 1:11:25Speaker 04

  No, shooting the pilot?

• 1:11:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, of course. They hadn't picked it up.

• 1:11:28Speaker 04

No, they hadn't picked it up. By the way, here's what a bad judge of is a show going to be successful or not? I was like, it's cute.

• 1:11:35Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:11:36Speaker 04

I mean, it's not Seinfeld is sort of groundbreaking comedy. I'm just glad it's on NBC because I've got a recurring role on Mad About You. I gotta protect that.

• 1:11:46Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and you're playing your own twin. I didn't know that until today.

• 1:11:49Speaker 04

That's because when they put us on, they put us on right after Mad About You.

• 1:11:53Speaker 01

It ended up being such a great crossover, though.

• 1:11:57Speaker 04

  Okay, good.

• 1:11:58Dax Shepard?

We have kept it from you until this moment.

• 1:12:00Speaker 01

I don't think we should go on.

• 1:12:01Dax Shepard?

And you've done a great job.

• 1:12:02Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:12:03Dax Shepard?

If Monica has a religion, it is Friends.

• 1:12:06Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:12:07Dax Shepard?

She talks about it every fucking episode.

• 1:12:08Speaker 01

Even yesterday, I was thinking, I was like, are we gonna even talk about it?

• 1:12:12Speaker 04

Oh, my God, what do you want to say?

• 1:12:14Speaker 01

I don't know what to say because I don't think there's any way for me to really tell you how important it was to me. I mean, we have a stanzie in there of Matt Damon and me.

• 1:12:23Dax Shepard?

  It's Matt Damon and Friends.

• 1:12:25Speaker 01

It was Good Will Hunting and Friends that changed my whole, whole life.

• 1:12:30Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:12:31Speaker 01

I had every episode VHS taped. I myself VHS taped. I had a color coded system. I had thirty one tapes. Oh, my God, the night of the finale, I had a AP test the next morning. Couldn't care less about the AP test. Was up till like three AM watching The Letterman or whatever you guys did that night and rewinding. Yeah, oh, my God.

• 1:12:51Speaker 04

No, it was like a once in a.

• 1:12:53Speaker 01

  Huge.

• 1:12:53Speaker 04

Who knew there'd be an internet and then you can think about it and it would present itself to you again.

• 1:12:59Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:13:00Dax Shepard?

  Miss it.

• 1:13:00Speaker 01

  You could not miss it.

• 1:13:01Dax Shepard?

Hence the must see TV. You really, if you didn't see it, you're fucked.

• 1:13:04Speaker 01

There's never gonna be something like that again.

• 1:13:07Dax Shepard?

You're absolutely fucked. Your life's over. If your fucking timer on your VHS didn't go off as planned.

• 1:13:11Speaker 01

  Oh, my God. Yes.

• 1:13:13Dax Shepard?

  That was Sopranos for me.

• 1:13:15Speaker 01

  So special.

• 1:13:15Speaker 04

And it was funny. These people were really funny.

• 1:13:18Dax Shepard?

In anticipation of you coming, I was trying to isolate why I didn't give that show a chance. I simply didn't give that show a chance.

• 1:13:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:13:26Dax Shepard?

And I imagine it's because I was in my twenties trying to be an actor in something about that is something maybe I wanted and I couldn't. I don't know. I have no explanation for why.

• 1:13:37Speaker 04

Can I offer something that would have been me had I not been on the show?

• 1:13:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:43Speaker 04

Well, if absolutely everybody loves it, it might not be for me.

• 1:13:47Dax Shepard?

  Thank you.

• 1:13:47Speaker 04

You think you're different. I've got a different sense of humor.

• 1:13:51Dax Shepard?

A thousand percent. There's first, why didn't I give it a shot? But then, once it was off to the races, I could never join on late. I was too punk rock in my own mind.

• 1:13:58Speaker 01

I was in middle school and I was trying very hard to be like everyone.

• 1:14:03Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:14:04Speaker 01

Everyone was watching Friends and I think it was like, I like this thing that everybody else likes. I'm like everybody else and I'm also gonna like it. Time's a good chili. I'm gonna like it the most. I'm gonna know everything about it. I'm gonna be perfect at liking this, which I did do.

• 1:14:16Dax Shepard?

It's so true. I had the luxury of I looked like everybody. So all I wanted to do is be different.

• 1:14:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:21Dax Shepard?

And Monica was different. And all she wanted to be is like everyone else. So it's like, anything anyone was doing, I was out. I still have to tell myself, you're acting like you're 12 years old right now and it's okay to like something everyone likes.

• 1:14:33Speaker 04

Yeah. I only watched Everybody Loves Raymond during COVID.

• 1:14:37Dax Shepard?

  There you go.

• 1:14:37Speaker 04

And then I watched Big Bang Theory and went, oh, my God, that Sheldon's the best character I've ever seen in my whole life.

• 1:14:44Speaker 01

Right. There's a thing about being in the cool club that gets in your way.

• 1:14:49Speaker 04

I don't know if it was the cool club when I was on Friends. I wasn't watching anything. I was working and I was the only one to get married and have a kid.

• 1:14:57Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Season three, you had a child?

• 1:14:59Speaker 04

Yeah. Was it? Yeah. We'd get together and watch the episodes and stuff. And then, like what you were saying about you have a kid and everything shifts. Everything drops about 10 pegs on the. List of priorities because it's that transition also into being a parent. I don't transition well, so it takes up a lot of my attention. And then also, that was around the same time I started getting cast in movies. While I'm doing Friends and I'm a mother for the first time. And it was just a little too much.

• 1:15:30Speaker 01

  That's a lot.

• 1:15:31Speaker 04

So I wasn't watching anything. I was done with the what's groundbreaking comedy. And the other big shift for me was after nine 11, I'd be driving back from Warner Brothers.

• 1:15:44Dax Shepard?

  Oh, that was.

• 1:15:44Speaker 04

Yeah, we were at Warner Brothers and people used to stop at a stoplight and go, ah, you know. Look at you.

• 1:15:51Dax Shepard?

Look at you. Look at yourself in the mirror. It's you.

• 1:15:57Speaker 04

And after nine 11, I don't know why this always makes me want to cry too. They'd pull up and I'd look over and they're looking at me and they weren't like, ah, they just mouthed, thank you.

• 1:16:09Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:16:09Speaker 04

Like very somberly. And that's when it really sunk in. I couldn't watch CNN anymore because all it was was who died.

• 1:16:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:20Speaker 04

Who was in New York? Who was near the towers? Who was in the towers? Everyone knew someone in the towers and I had this weird dissociated event. I was watching Will and Grace and I went, oh yeah, oh, thank God. I went, oh, wait, but it's in New York. Oh God, who did they know in the towers? And then went, oh, no, no, I'm in TV. I know they shot this before nine 11, so it hasn't happened yet.

• 1:16:45Dax Shepard?

  And it's safe.

• 1:16:45Speaker 04

And then I went, no, this isn't real. It will have never happened here.

• 1:16:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:16:54Speaker 04

And it was like, oh, thank God.

• 1:16:57Speaker 01

Thank God I can go somewhere. That didn't happen.

• 1:17:00Speaker 04

And that's when any kind of comedy, snobbery, any of that melted away forever. Because entertainment is important and it's providing a huge mental health service. And it is important.

• 1:17:16Dax Shepard?

I agree in having done some things that weren't my. comedic tone and to see how appreciated there are by people and recognizing like, oh, no, everyone's entitled to laugh. Everyone deserves a laugh. There's no hierarchy. There's no great comedy and bad comedy. If you make people laugh, that's it.

• 1:17:32Speaker 04

And also, why did I want to do this anyway? For me? No, because when people are laughing and enjoying themselves, it's something you're doing. That's what the thrill is.

• 1:17:44Dax Shepard?

Sorry, you keep going like trauma style, but additionally for me is that's when I'm safe. If all the men in the room are laughing at me, no one wants to fight. No one's hitting anybody. We're at peak safety when everyone's laughing.

• 1:17:59Speaker 04

That's the personal level too, for me.

• 1:18:02Dax Shepard?

Probably is hard to see it as a gift, but I think it's really hard to understand the integration your stuff has in people's life. It's too abstract. I don't even know that it's even healthy to know it, but to be given that moment at the light that weirdly is kind of helpful in computing what it really means.

• 1:18:19Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:18:20Dax Shepard?

You're not at work feeling special. You're like, oh, let's go out and save the world tonight.

• 1:18:24Speaker 04

No, but we were always aware. There's the task at hand. We got sort of over publicized. What is overexposed?

• 1:18:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, saturated.

• 1:18:34Speaker 04

  I couldn't think of overexposed.

• 1:18:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's all right. You got there. You got there pretty quickly, actually. You're being a little hard on yourself. It took about one second.

• 1:18:40Speaker 04

  It should have taken.

• 1:18:42Dax Shepard?

You know what it is, is I think your obligation is you do want to honor those people and part of how you honor them is accept what they're telling you.

• 1:18:51Speaker 04

Yes. Also, we were overexposed. Everyone was excited at the network, at the studio. We were on every talk show. And so then it just became the joke. Matthew Perry was the first one who said, like, we feel like we need to get the word out that we're on, which was insane. Yeah. And so then we were asked to do some commercial or something else. And we just went, we're so overexposed. And how are we going to fix this? And then it was, we don't need to fix it. They're still watching the show. We just need to focus on the task at hand, which is doing this show and doing it the best we can. And the writers and producers feel the same way. And there were conversations just about, I don't know, is this getting

• 1:19:36Speaker 04

a little too weird? You know, like with the writing, but everyone just got refocused on.

• 1:19:42Speaker 01

  Make it good.

• 1:19:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:19:43Dax Shepard?

Don't forget what this is all about, being great at that taping. Let me just scan here.

• 1:19:49Speaker 04

I'm getting shaky. It's too much energy. I'm talking too much.

• 1:19:53Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:19:53Speaker 04

  I'm like convulsing.

• 1:19:54Speaker 01

  Is it the nicotine?

• 1:19:55Dax Shepard?

No, she hasn't had nearly enough is my argument. Yeah, you need to steady yourself.

• 1:20:00Speaker 04

Well, I can't chew and talk.

• 1:20:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, you can.

• 1:20:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, do whatever. We edit.

• 1:20:03Speaker 04

  Okay, come on now.

• 1:20:06Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna be really rude while you reload. I'm gonna go pee pee. Is that okay?

• 1:20:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:20:10Speaker 01

  Potty right there.

• 1:20:11Dax Shepard?

You wanna get out of here?

• 1:20:12Speaker 04

I wanna pee at some point.

• 1:20:14Speaker 01

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Take.

• 1:20:15Speaker 04

  No, go ahead.

• 1:20:20Speaker 04

  That would be so weird.

• 1:20:21Speaker 01

We didn't have a door on that for many, many, many years. It was wide open. So you got the door.

• 1:20:27Speaker 04

Why do I feel like I was here before?

• 1:20:29Speaker 01

  You've never done it.

• 1:20:30Dax Shepard?

  Were you in Scientology?

• 1:20:32Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:20:33Speaker 01

The guy who used to live here was a big Scientologist.

• 1:20:36Speaker 04

  And he had a podcast?

• 1:20:38Dax Shepard?

No, his daughter lived up here.

• 1:20:39Speaker 04

  And she had a podcast?

• 1:20:41Speaker 01

Yeah, she did. She had a cat podcast.

• 1:20:43Speaker 04

I'm just remembering doing a podcast and it was, yeah, you can use the bathroom. And it's like, this is a curtain.

• 1:20:50Speaker 01

Maybe it's deja vu. Oh, ours wasn't a curtain. It had nothing.

• 1:20:54Speaker 04

  A precognition.

• 1:20:55Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:20:56Speaker 04

  Of post cognition.

• 1:20:57Speaker 01

Like your cosmic voice that told you.

• 1:21:00Speaker 04

  I feel like an idiot.

• 1:21:01Speaker 01

  No, what do you mean?

• 1:21:02Speaker 04

I do believe sometimes things just

• 1:21:05Speaker 01

  We believe that.

• 1:21:05Speaker 04

  Make themselves known to you.

• 1:21:06Speaker 01

Obviously, you resisted it for so long and this is your life. It's not a weird thing to think. It's added up to being exactly that.

• 1:21:14Speaker 04

Haven't you had things happen that you can't explain and come on?

• 1:21:17Speaker 01

That's when we talk about the sim. I think that all the time. Even this.

• 1:21:21Dax Shepard?

  You wanna go for real?

• 1:21:22Speaker 01

  Yeah, go to the bathroom.

• 1:21:23Speaker 04

  God, it's too much.

• 1:21:24Dax Shepard?

  I'll touch you back in.

• 1:21:26Speaker 04

Oh, but this has to come off.

• 1:21:28Speaker 01

Yeah, you'll take that guy off.

• 1:21:29Speaker 04

Oh, my God. I'm out of my mind. He's talking for me.

• 1:21:34Dax Shepard?

Uh, are you an introvert or an extrovert?

• 1:21:37Speaker 01

No, you're not. You're not talking enough.

• 1:21:41Dax Shepard?

Get your head straight in there and come out and talk more.

• 1:21:44Speaker 04

Oh, my God, that was so long.

• 1:21:47Dax Shepard?

  How much pee?

• 1:21:50Dax Shepard?

Did it overflow from the toilet?

• 1:21:57Speaker 04

  Do you ever?

• 1:21:57Dax Shepard?

Sometimes, especially doing this, I rarely, like, that's actually a sign to you that I feel comfortable around you. Generally, I'll sit here and be miserable and then the guest leaves. And I've peed for three minutes. Where I'm like, oh, my God, I cannot believe it.

• 1:22:11Speaker 04

Wasn't that like five or 10?

• 1:22:13Dax Shepard?

That was under 60, I think.

• 1:22:14Speaker 04

Wouldn't it be funny if I thought, I think that was about 10 minutes.

• 1:22:18Dax Shepard?

I would be a little nervous.

• 1:22:19Speaker 01

Mixed with the shakiness, we might need to get you to your brother.

• 1:22:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah, can I just call your brother really quick? Do a little pet scan?

• 1:22:27Speaker 01

That's so cool that he followed in the family footsteps and became a neurologist. That's very fancy. That's like Vassar.

• 1:22:34Dax Shepard?

Just like Vassar. He must have gone to Vassar.

• 1:22:36Speaker 04

Everyone at Vassar, when I was there, was like, yeah, I didn't get into Yale.

• 1:22:41Dax Shepard?

I have just a few more questions.

• 1:22:42Speaker 04

  Oh, no.

• 1:22:43Dax Shepard?

Sorry about this, and then we're moving on to your new show.

• 1:22:45Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:22:46Dax Shepard?

  Bear with me.

• 1:22:46Speaker 04

I was like, I wonder if maybe we don't ever talk about that.

• 1:22:50Dax Shepard?

  No, actually, because I love.

• 1:22:51Speaker 04

  This is just chit chat.

• 1:22:52Dax Shepard?

  I genuinely loved it.

• 1:22:53Speaker 01

  We like to chit chat.

• 1:22:54Dax Shepard?

One question is, there are some people that get famous and they had some training. They have some experience being the most popular person in school. And then there's introverts that get famous, and I think it's a little bit different of an experience. There's no prior experience where it's like, everywhere I go, everyone wants to say hi to me. It's very foreign.

• 1:23:17Speaker 04

  Interesting.

• 1:23:18Dax Shepard?

Let's take Matthew McConaughey, who I love. He's so comfortable being famous. But guess what? He has been famous since he was born. He was Little Mr. Texas, we found out.

• 1:23:27Speaker 04

  Really?

• 1:23:27Dax Shepard?

And every girl liked him in school. He had a lot of training.

• 1:23:31Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:23:31Dax Shepard?

  To be kind of adored.

• 1:23:33Speaker 01

People are looking at him all the way.

• 1:23:34Dax Shepard?

He's hot shit. So by the time it happens, he's kind of had some practice. And then you take other people that were like, I'm hesitant to say this, but I'll give the example of Edward Norton. He was a fucking genius bookworm. And now he's the most popular guy in the world. It's a much different new experience, I think, for some people than others. How did that transition for you feel when all of a sudden you were like, one of the six most popular people in America?

• 1:23:58Speaker 01

  Globally.

• 1:23:59Dax Shepard?

Was there like dissonance and disconnect from it?

• 1:24:01Speaker 04

Yeah, it's everything. That was the beginning of online chat stuff.

• 1:24:05Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:24:05Speaker 04

And I could actually go on a computer and read what people are saying. And how they're criticizing, well, two of the three girls are cute. You know, like a lot of that stuff too. And went, oh, okay, this won't help me.

• 1:24:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:22Speaker 04

Be good on the show. So I just immediately stopped.

• 1:24:27Speaker 01

You were smart enough to know I'm not looking at that.

• 1:24:29Speaker 04

Cause there were some good things too, that I didn't necessarily agree with.

• 1:24:33Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:24:34Speaker 04

Just rationally thought, none of this needs to be taken to heart or too seriously. Very nice when people appreciate what I do. Not everyone will. Okay. That was pretty intact.

• 1:24:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it takes some people decades to.

• 1:24:51Speaker 01

  Or never.

• 1:24:52Dax Shepard?

Come to that. Oh yeah, or never.

• 1:24:53Speaker 04

I do not need to know what people think.

• 1:24:56Dax Shepard?

In AA, we say what people think of you is none of your business.

• 1:24:59Speaker 04

  That's such a great saying.

• 1:25:00Dax Shepard?

  It's kind of true.

• 1:25:01Speaker 04

It is none of my business. But what I have found is it depends on mood isn't even the right word. It's like a frame of mind and I couldn't even define what that frame of mind is. But I can watch the same thing and think, that was funny. Oh, good. And then another day, the same thing and say, why did I think that was good? How have you been getting away?

• 1:25:25Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you fraud.

• 1:25:27Speaker 04

With doing this for so long. Oh my God.

• 1:25:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:34Dax Shepard?

Right. It's the exact same footage.

• 1:25:36Speaker 01

Yeah. Again, it has nothing to do with what you've done. It's everything to do with what you feel.

• 1:25:39Speaker 04

Well, also if I'm doing a character and I see a glimpse of me, and mostly there's a lot of me in everything I do.

• 1:25:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:46Speaker 04

I can tell the difference. If I watch the comeback, I have no problem watching that. That's a different human being from me. I'm proud of it. It's all good. Friends, sometimes like, uh oh, you just did a voice, basically. That wasn't acting. That wasn't anything. It was just like, I don't know what, what? And then I don't want to shit on it because people like it. And I'm not saying you're an idiot for liking it or anything. It's just for me, it's what I tried to do is out of respect, not even just for me, but for people who do like that.

• 1:26:22Dax Shepard?

  Honoring the whole thing.

• 1:26:24Speaker 04

So can you forgive yourself? You didn't think you were so great?

• 1:26:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh my God.

• 1:26:29Speaker 04

At the acting, it was good enough for a lot of people.

• 1:26:32Speaker 01

  And good enough.

• 1:26:33Dax Shepard?

Can you forgive yourself is like.

• 1:26:35Speaker 04

And then the answer is, well, of course I can.

• 1:26:38Dax Shepard?

It's so hard, though, to forgive yourself, isn't it?

• 1:26:40Speaker 04

But don't you forgive everyone? I mean, performance wise, someone will have just a moment in a performance and I'll go, oh, well, I forgive it because the rest of it is so great. Oh, my God.

• 1:26:52Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:26:52Dax Shepard?

I am ultra aware of those things.

• 1:26:54Speaker 04

The big thing for me now is, I don't even know if I should say it out loud.

• 1:26:58Dax Shepard?

  Of course you should.

• 1:27:00Speaker 04

Can I forgive myself for not having some work done on that face? Can I forgive myself for getting older?

• 1:27:08Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:27:09Speaker 04

And not doing something about it? Because I watch and like, they've got a jawline. Am I supposed to have a jawline?

• 1:27:16Dax Shepard?

  Did I do this wrong?

• 1:27:17Speaker 04

Like even into my sixties, that thing that comes up is, wait, should I? Am I supposed to? Are you allowed?

• 1:27:24Dax Shepard?

Is everyone but me doing this, right? That's the thought I have.

• 1:27:27Speaker 04

Everyone but me seems to be doing this, so.

• 1:27:30Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:27:31Speaker 04

Am I allowed? Should I? Am I allowed not to? Or is it going to be so off putting? It's going to affect people's experience.

• 1:27:39Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 1:27:40Speaker 04

Watching me. I'm trying to be practical about it because clearly I haven't.

• 1:27:45Speaker 01

Oh, my God. Here we go.

• 1:27:46Dax Shepard?

  I think you look exquisite.

• 1:27:47Speaker 01

  You look exquisite. You do.

• 1:27:48Dax Shepard?

Again, call your husband. Let's go to the bathroom.

• 1:27:52Speaker 01

  Meet me in the bathroom.

• 1:27:53Speaker 04

He won't let me do anything.

• 1:27:54Speaker 01

He likes your face. Faz your face.

• 1:27:56Speaker 04

  He won't let me.

• 1:27:57Speaker 01

It's so crazy how we see ourselves and how other people see us because obviously we look at you and I'm with your husband. I'm like, don't mess with it. It's great. But I also, I look in the mirror and I'm like, okay, I did. I got chin filler. You start looking and you're like, okay, I think I can start manipulating.

• 1:28:11Dax Shepard?

Just rearrange this a little bit.

• 1:28:12Speaker 01

It's just a tiny bit. And then you do it and you're like, I like it.

• 1:28:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:28:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:28:17Speaker 04

  Well, I did get Botox.

• 1:28:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, sure.

• 1:28:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's the basic.

• 1:28:21Dax Shepard?

At sixty for the first time.

• 1:28:22Speaker 04

I went to the doctor and he's like, wait a minute, I've never checked the box for a first time in LA. You're unique. And then I hear, unique is a euphemism for idiot?

• 1:28:34Dax Shepard?

Okay, sure. But I really relate to like this bizarre zone your brain goes into where you go, in some weird way, am I not being professional?

• 1:28:44Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:28:45Dax Shepard?

I signed up to be a fucking actor.

• 1:28:47Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:28:47Dax Shepard?

I gotta be pleasing to people to look at.

• 1:28:49Speaker 04

  Do I have an obligation?

• 1:28:51Dax Shepard?

Well, am I acting like that's not part of my job that I'm above this? And I look at peers and I go, yeah, they're doing what you're supposed to do. It's a very entangled experience.

• 1:29:00Speaker 04

Well, another part of me wants people to then just get used to me older.

• 1:29:05Dax Shepard?

  Of course.

• 1:29:05Speaker 04

  That's all.

• 1:29:06Speaker 01

I was gonna say, do you have pride? On the other end of it is pride, like, I haven't done anything, guys. That's cool.

• 1:29:12Dax Shepard?

  I'm walking through this.

• 1:29:13Speaker 04

It's not, because I don't judge anyone for doing it. I get it, and a lot of people look fantastic.

• 1:29:19Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:29:19Speaker 04

But I also am afraid that if it doesn't heal right.

• 1:29:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's scary.

• 1:29:25Speaker 04

  I look older.

• 1:29:26Speaker 01

  And not like you.

• 1:29:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:29:28Dax Shepard?

  Older and fucked up.

• 1:29:31Dax Shepard?

I think it's more complicated than people give it credit. They're just evaluating it in terms of vanity, which is fair. Some of it's vanity, but some of it's also like, you know, you do certain things. If you're a pilot, you get lasik. There's things that people do.

• 1:29:44Speaker 04

  That's true.

• 1:29:45Dax Shepard?

And you have this occupation. Your face is the job.

• 1:29:47Speaker 01

But what's the obligation for people to see us as young? Why is that owed?

• 1:29:52Speaker 04

  It's maintained.

• 1:29:54Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 1:29:55Speaker 04

Because once there's work that is not trying to make you look 20. AI can do that for me. But it's just making you look, looked after, cared for, pruned, kept up.

• 1:30:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:07Dax Shepard?

I've got some stuff in my fridge. Let's play with some injections before you go.

• 1:30:11Speaker 04

Yeah. Injections are the safest thing to do.

• 1:30:14Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna give you some injections and then give you a tattoo.

• 1:30:16Speaker 01

  I think the surgery.

• 1:30:17Dax Shepard?

When your husband says, "How was the podcast?", you go, "I don't know what happened." I'm a new person.

• 1:30:23Speaker 01

He's like, "What's going on with your jaw?"

• 1:30:25Speaker 04

It felt like it was okay for some reason. So.

• 1:30:29Dax Shepard?

I think it's his height. I just trusted him. I have no other explanation than he's tall.

• 1:30:33Speaker 04

  He's very commanding.

• 1:30:36Dax Shepard?

Okay. Another question I had is when it became so publicized how much money you guys were making, did you witness any impact on your interpersonal relationships and that being so public? Was there fallout from that? So again, I think that's another one that's like, it's probably more complicated than people would fantasize about.

• 1:30:56Speaker 04

Family and friends? No. I think it was always if you're going to be an actor, the hope is that you make enough.

• 1:31:05Dax Shepard?

  To not do another job.

• 1:31:06Speaker 04

And this was like, the show's really good and you're good, but this is winning a lottery. That's how it was sort of looked at. But you mean like asking for money and doing stuff? If it did, I'm not remembering.

• 1:31:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it wasn't a big thing.

• 1:31:19Speaker 04

That's what's not registering to me. The only, there were, I don't remember what I was even going to say.

• 1:31:24Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:31:24Speaker 04

Cause I thought of one thing, then another thing, knocked it out and then, but there was something. Damn.

• 1:31:31Dax Shepard?

  Maybe on your next trip.

• 1:31:32Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:31:33Dax Shepard?

  Here.

• 1:31:34Speaker 04

  I know what it was.

• 1:31:35Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:31:35Speaker 04

The thing is, I think for all of us, and especially at that time, right? It's like 20 years ago. That's when it was money being.

• 1:31:42Dax Shepard?

  The last two years.

• 1:31:43Speaker 04

Publicized. Yeah. That it's, I don't want people to know that. And for me, the biggest impact was at my son's schools, as he was getting older, our society was moving into what's privileged class where the other people in his school had assumptions about his family.

• 1:32:02Dax Shepard?

  Lifestyle.

• 1:32:02Speaker 04

  Based on what's been known.

• 1:32:04Dax Shepard?

Public knowledge. Yeah. You guys fly private to Aspen on Christmas.

• 1:32:09Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:32:09Dax Shepard?

  And that's that.

• 1:32:10Speaker 04

Not once, but right. Yeah. And also what they didn't know was that some of their other classmates' families.

• 1:32:17Dax Shepard?

  Were billionaires.

• 1:32:18Speaker 04

  Billionaires.

• 1:32:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, right, right.

• 1:32:19Speaker 04

Yeah. But it's not known. My son's getting a lot of shit for being privileged. And then it was, hey, cool. I thought you'd get a new car. You got the old soccer mom car. Yeah.

• 1:32:32Dax Shepard?

I wonder if you felt a discernible lack of compassion towards you at any point? Cause you were just known to have all this money. Who the fuck's gonna ever feel bad for you again? Because you have all this money.

• 1:32:41Speaker 04

Sure. And I mean, I don't need anyone feeling bad for me. Let's say that.

• 1:32:46Dax Shepard?

  Well, I like compassion.

• 1:32:47Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:32:48Dax Shepard?

Yeah. When I'm going through a hard time, the people that I've loved and been there for, I would want them to be there for me.

• 1:32:53Speaker 01

  You're still a person.

• 1:32:54Speaker 04

Yes. Oh, I know what you're saying. Sometimes there's been hints of, you know, if there's a stressful time around something personal, sometimes I feel a whisper of, well.

• 1:33:05Dax Shepard?

  But also you're rich.

• 1:33:06Speaker 04

You can afford to do this.

• 1:33:08Dax Shepard?

Buy your way out of this problem.

• 1:33:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:33:10Speaker 01

To buy out of this emotional problem.

• 1:33:13Dax Shepard?

This problem with your husband, have you thought about giving him a couple million dollars, see if that makes it go away?

• 1:33:19Speaker 04

And then it's just, of course, that's what's plaguing you right now. Maybe I need to have a little more empathy about that. But the only time ever I did a who do you think you are? Cause I produced the show and I was the first one to shoot it. And I'm in Belarus and learning about how my family was killed by death squads during the Holocaust.

• 1:33:37Dax Shepard?

Your dad's grandmother, your great great grandmother.

• 1:33:39Speaker 04

Yes, great grandmother and kids and family and whole town. And so I'm learning about that and I'm talking to this old woman who had been there. She's not Jewish. That's why she survived. And I'm just surrounded by this whole darkness of it. And getting slightly angry. So this woman in between shooting in Russian and she just said, you're from America? Yeah. You have nice teeth. And I went, yeah. She didn't have any teeth at all on her head. I said, yeah. And she said, you're rich?

• 1:34:11Speaker 01

  Oh, boy.

• 1:34:12Speaker 04

And I said, yes, yes, I am. And I was so.

• 1:34:16Dax Shepard?

  It's kind of undeniable.

• 1:34:17Speaker 04

  Yes, I am.

• 1:34:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:19Speaker 04

I'm so proud of that at this moment.

• 1:34:22Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:34:23Speaker 04

Because all these people were murdered and then my grandmother, they came over, they had nothing.

• 1:34:28Speaker 01

Here you are and you're rich.

• 1:34:30Speaker 04

  And that.

• 1:34:31Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:34:32Speaker 04

The only time in my life that I felt like, yes.

• 1:34:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:37Speaker 04

  I'm rich.

• 1:34:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:39Speaker 01

  I love that.

• 1:34:40Dax Shepard?

A thousand percent. I went to Dachau with my mother when I was 16. We toured Dachau. And I really recommend everyone have that experience because talk about the stuff we can't figure out, or we don't understand really what's going on. To stand someplace where it is still so physically accessible that the weight is so palpable is fucking weird. I've never had an experience anywhere else in my life like it where after an hour there, you're like, oh my God, I gotta get the fuck out of here.

• 1:35:10Speaker 04

I've never been, I don't know if I can handle it.

• 1:35:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:12Speaker 04

And I could barely handle that, but I was really surprised by my reaction to being around someone who survived it, then later came back and placed a monument where the mass grave was. I was standing there and thinking, God, all these people were killed. And then there were the people who were shooting, who have to have had moments.

• 1:35:38Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:35:39Speaker 04

Later on, where they went, what did I do?

• 1:35:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:43Speaker 04

I'm sure a lot of them just went Jews, they had it coming. But how many lives were ruined on all sides?

• 1:35:49Dax Shepard?

It's convenient to think of that group of people, some other group of people that were evil and stuff. They were normal people that were in a system and they played their role. And yeah, I imagine, of course, there's some monsters that were like, we didn't get enough. And then I think more often people were like, now there's a new reality and now I see it. And what the fuck happened?

• 1:36:07Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:36:07Dax Shepard?

I was under the spell of this.

• 1:36:09Speaker 04

Even if for like five minutes, when that veil is lifted, it's torture. And then they can go back and tell themselves the same story to get through it. And these weren't Nazis either, necessarily. A lot of times it was local police who were happy to help. Anyway, sorry.

• 1:36:25Dax Shepard?

  My last friend's question.

• 1:36:26Speaker 04

  They had a dinner party.

• 1:36:27Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:36:28Speaker 04

  Isn't it funny?

• 1:36:29Dax Shepard?

We like this part. Yeah, it's almost sadistic, but we like this part. My last, it's kind of related. I only bring it up because I wasn't on a cultural phenom, but I was on parenthood for six years.

• 1:36:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:36:42Dax Shepard?

And I fucking love those people so much. And I hadn't seen the show, I guess, in eight years or whatever it was. And my daughters, I don't know if they wanted to see it or I suggested it, but we watched it on a vacation last year. From the second it started, the title sequence, I started crying. And it was the most cathartic, wonderful. I got to experience it in a way I almost couldn't when I was doing it. I've heard you say a couple of times that you were unable to watch Friends.

• 1:37:12Speaker 04

  Yeah, to watch myself.

• 1:37:13Dax Shepard?

Well, what I really liked is I have a bit of the same fear, which is like, I mostly just don't want to get caught watching myself.

• 1:37:19Speaker 04

  Well, there's that too.

• 1:37:23Dax Shepard?

  So you didn't watch it?

• 1:37:25Speaker 04

I didn't. First couple of seasons, we'd go to Courtney's and watch it every Wednesday, every Thursday night. I almost said the wrong night.

• 1:37:31Speaker 01

  Yeah, must see.

• 1:37:33Speaker 04

I was just making up a word. It's like, it's every week, every, I don't know.

• 1:37:37Dax Shepard?

Every Saturday morning, we get together.

• 1:37:39Speaker 04

  As a day.

• 1:37:40Dax Shepard?

Watch the show every Saturday morning.

• 1:37:41Speaker 04

For example, every Wednesday, whatever it was, I don't know.

• 1:37:44Speaker 01

  Whatever.

• 1:37:44Speaker 04

Thursday night. We'd watch it every week and then too busy and I was pregnant. I don't know, I just stopped watching and there are episodes I've never seen.

• 1:37:53Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:37:54Dax Shepard?

And it's almost impossible to avoid. If any show is on at all times of the day.

• 1:37:58Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 1:37:59Dax Shepard?

In fact, one of the only fights I ever got in, when I was still dating Kristen, we didn't live together yet. I went to her house, this is back when a DVR only had like 20 hours of storage. And I like go to watch some show we had and she had all these roommates. And someone had recorded and put a season's pass on Friends. And I'm yelling in the house, I'm like, whoever put this on the DVR, you don't need to, just turn the TV on, it's on. You don't need to record it, it's literally on all day.

• 1:38:25Speaker 01

  You need to record it.

• 1:38:26Dax Shepard?

And then Amy Hansen, our sweetest friend came around.

• 1:38:28Speaker 01

  A true angel.

• 1:38:30Dax Shepard?

An angel, she goes, I'm sorry. And I go, you were doing it, you should definitely keep recording. I felt so terrible.

• 1:38:37Speaker 01

Yeah, that's the worst thing you've ever done.

• 1:38:38Dax Shepard?

But anyways, you can't even avoid that. You can't go channel surfing and not see it.

• 1:38:43Speaker 01

  It's so comforting.

• 1:38:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but you started watching it again.

• 1:38:46Speaker 04

Well, when Matthew passed away, I started watching. I mean, there were marathons. It was part of the process for me. And boy, I really appreciated it and how fun. Well, I knew he was funny always anyway.

• 1:39:01Dax Shepard?

  Conan knows the most. Humiliated.

• 1:39:04Speaker 04

If for no other reason than to torture Conan.

• 1:39:08Speaker 04

But he just was so funny. And I'm like, God, LeBlanc is hilarious. Oh, Jennifer, my God, that's so good. Yeah. Come on, Courtney. How are you never nominated for an Emmy? I shouldn't say. And Schwimmer. Yes. Oh, my God. Come on. It was just this whole appreciation. I went, I've got to watch all of them.

• 1:39:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:29Dax Shepard?

Did you cry when you're watching it?

• 1:39:31Speaker 04

I cried when there was a marathon on and I caught. I mean, I'm not watching it like on Max from season one. I tried. I don't know if I can do season one, but maybe season two or three. My husband's like, can we watch and watch it like, huh? Okay. And then something about me was like, I can't.

• 1:39:49Dax Shepard?

You feel like it's too self indulgent?

• 1:39:51Speaker 04

Yeah, but I feel like I need to watch all of them. So anyway, the episode where Phoebe got married is on. And I'm watching it and I got so caught up that I cried watching her because she looked so happy.

• 1:40:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, she was so happy.

• 1:40:07Speaker 04

She had such a real smile. She was just, I've never seen Phoebe that happy.

• 1:40:12Speaker 01

  You could remove yourself.

• 1:40:14Speaker 04

  It's she.

• 1:40:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:15Speaker 04

It's for sir, she. It's for sir, shir.

• 1:40:19Dax Shepard?

She sells seashells by the she shore.

• 1:40:21Speaker 01

Who wouldn't be happy marrying Paul Rudd?

• 1:40:23Speaker 04

Well, and then there's that. But it really touched me. I was so happy for her.

• 1:40:27Speaker 01

I'm glad you got that moment. That's what everyone felt. That whole series is like, we know them.

• 1:40:33Speaker 04

But did you cry when she got married?

• 1:40:34Speaker 01

  I cried.

• 1:40:35Speaker 04

  Oh, you did?

• 1:40:35Speaker 01

So much. I was like, I know them. They're my friends. They're saving me from feeling lonely. That one glimpse you got is what people had for 10 years.

• 1:40:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:40:46Speaker 01

So lucky for us and grateful to you guys for that.

• 1:40:51Dax Shepard?

So I knew him through sobriety.

• 1:40:54Speaker 04

That's where I start chewing my gum.

• 1:40:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:40:57Speaker 04

This is gum time. Where I need my nicotine.

• 1:40:58Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. Look, what us addicts put everyone that love us through is rough.

• 1:41:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:41:05Dax Shepard?

If I were you, I would want to see the version, like, let's put it this way. And I can compare, I think it's a good comparison, cancer. So my father, he had a lot of health issues towards the end. And there's a whole decade of his life, he was really on the decline. When I have dreams about him, I have dreams about him in his like 40s. I want to see his vibrant, virile self. And I miss it so much. And I guess I think if I loved an addict and I had to see the whole thing, I would be grateful to get to go back and see it before it had like taken its toll.

• 1:41:35Speaker 04

Right. I, this will sound odd, am more comforted that he was happy the day he died. He got to die happy. And to me, that was a gift.

• 1:41:52Speaker 01

It could have gone a much different way.

• 1:41:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I think people, they have a category addict. It's really incomplete. It's a spectrum. I've loved people in the program that I could recognize, oh, they got it worse than me. And I've had friends in AA where I would say, yeah, the weight of the world is heavier on your shoulders than it is on mine. And it's pretty heavy on mine. And I can see it and feel it, and it's heartbreaking. And I don't envy you. And I have a lot of compassion because you really are dealing with more than I am. And I can feel it. I'm sad for that.

• 1:42:23Speaker 04

  Yeah, it is complicated.

• 1:42:25Dax Shepard?

  It is, yeah.

• 1:42:26Speaker 04

But I loved that Matthew I first met and the one at the end. Because God love him. This is you, and I love you.

• 1:42:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:42:34Dax Shepard?

I accept that this is you.

• 1:42:36Speaker 04

Yeah, I understand. And so did he.

• 1:42:38Dax Shepard?

I didn't even watch the show, but I got to be around him a lot. And he has a lot of quotes I keep with me. One of them is, I've spent my whole life making everyone like me. I haven't really asked myself what I like.

• 1:42:49Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:42:49Dax Shepard?

Oh, I can relate to that.

• 1:42:51Speaker 04

Yes. I thought the sentence was going to finish a different way.

• 1:42:54Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you did.

• 1:42:55Speaker 04

I've spent so much of my life making everybody around me like me.

• 1:42:59Dax Shepard?

And no time making myself like me.

• 1:43:01Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:43:02Dax Shepard?

It's the same thing, really. Not asking yourself what you like is very similar to, you haven't figured out what you like. And you're not trying to make yourself like yourself.

• 1:43:10Speaker 04

But it's not like, what do you like about yourself? It's accept yourself, love yourself. That was, to me, the whole thing about fame isn't gonna give you that. Just because everyone else is loving you.

• 1:43:23Dax Shepard?

It weirdly compounds it and it makes you hopeless because the thing that was gonna make you love yourself didn't work and now we're out of options.

• 1:43:31Speaker 04

It exacerbates it, but the answer is simply, you're not only allowed to love yourself, you've got to.

• 1:43:38Dax Shepard?

  It's like required.

• 1:43:39Speaker 04

You're all you've got. Ultimately, it's so nice that people love you, but it doesn't work if you don't love you.

• 1:43:47Dax Shepard?

It can work temporarily for me. Okay, your show, No Good Deed. I'm not blowing smoke up your ass. It's fantastic. I'm gonna add to you. You've seen it? Yes, I watched today. While I was working out, I watched three episodes. You're gonna fucking love it, Monica.

• 1:44:03Speaker 04

  Really?

• 1:44:03Dax Shepard?

Yes, because it's very, and I don't know if you'll agree with this comparison. It's weirdly very Murders in the Building.

• 1:44:11Speaker 04

  Oh, interesting. Wow.

• 1:44:13Speaker 01

  Exciting.

• 1:44:14Dax Shepard?

It's great. So Liz Feldman and I were in The Sunday Company together.

• 1:44:18Speaker 04

Oh my God. It all goes back to the groundlings every time.

• 1:44:22Dax Shepard?

  All roads lead back.

• 1:44:24Speaker 01

  Did she create it?

• 1:44:25Dax Shepard?

She created it. She had also created Dead to Me.

• 1:44:28Speaker 04

Which was Christine Applegate, Linda Cardellini.

• 1:44:31Dax Shepard?

Had you known her prior to this?

• 1:44:32Speaker 04

No, I was just told, so we have an offer for you to do this Netflix show. Interesting.

• 1:44:40Dax Shepard?

  Tell me more.

• 1:44:41Speaker 04

It's limited series, which you can do, because I was committed to something else at the time. I went, okay. It's Liz Feldman who did, I said Dead to Me.

• 1:44:49Dax Shepard?

  You knew.

• 1:44:50Speaker 04

I know. Well, this sounds like a yes. Well, I'll tell you a little more. You'll be married to Ray Romano. Well, of course, yes. Yeah. He's such a good actor.

• 1:45:01Dax Shepard?

So again, back to Parenthood. That's where he did his first kind of dramatic work. He was awesome. I got to direct him in an episode.

• 1:45:08Speaker 04

  I loved Parenthood.

• 1:45:09Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you did?

• 1:45:09Speaker 04

I saw every one of them.

• 1:45:11Dax Shepard?

Oh, my goodness. Okay, you were keeping that very tight.

• 1:45:13Speaker 04

I should have said that before.

• 1:45:15Dax Shepard?

There were a lot of moments. Remember I told you I rewatched the whole thing and I cried and you go, oh, yeah, it was really good.

• 1:45:19Speaker 04

I was going to, and then I. Forgot. Remember how I kept saying, there's something I want to say and I can't remember what it is?

• 1:45:24Dax Shepard?

That's what it was, that you're a super fan of Parenthood. But yeah, he was incredible on Parenthood, right?

• 1:45:29Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:45:30Speaker 01

  Heartbreaking.

• 1:45:31Speaker 04

  He's so good.

• 1:45:33Dax Shepard?

I'll add, what a dude. He has no ego. To walk into Parenthood season, whatever it was.

• 1:45:39Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:45:39Dax Shepard?

That's fucking hard. You were on a show that had your name in the title.

• 1:45:43Speaker 04

  Which was your whole story.

• 1:45:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And then you walk in and you're like 23rd on the call sheet this morning and you can't wait to act.

• 1:45:50Speaker 04

Yes. Did you see that Netflix movie, him and Mark Duplass? I can't remember it was called because the name of it has nothing to do with what it was about. Thank you. Paddleton.

• 1:46:01Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:46:02Speaker 04

Maybe that was someone's name, but to me that has nothing to do with what it was about. And that was just world changing to me.

• 1:46:10Dax Shepard?

He's incredible. He's almost a Duval. Like he's just alive there and it's real.

• 1:46:14Speaker 04

  Effortless. So I was thrilled.

• 1:46:17Dax Shepard?

  You have such rhythm.

• 1:46:18Speaker 04

  Oh, good.

• 1:46:18Dax Shepard?

  Oh, big time.

• 1:46:19Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:46:21Dax Shepard?

And you have a lot of heavy lifting. You should see the list because you don't get sent screeners and get told what's embargoed. But the list of things I can't say is comical. I've never seen a list so long.

• 1:46:31Speaker 04

  Oh, because spoilers.

• 1:46:32Dax Shepard?

But I think we can say from the get go, you and Ray Romano are married, you're empty nesters and you're going to sell this terrific house. It's a very LA story because this has happened to a lot of people where you accidentally end up with a house that's worth like $5 million. And they're in this situation and they're going to sell the house and it's a great device. You meet all these characters that are coming in to tour the house and they all want it. And by the way, the house is so great.

• 1:46:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:46:58Dax Shepard?

It made me want the house so bad.

• 1:46:59Speaker 04

Me too. It's perfectly beautiful. That was a set on two stages. The first floor is on one stage. Second floor is on another stage.

• 1:47:07Dax Shepard?

But you have heavy lifting without giving anything away.

• 1:47:10Speaker 01

Is that all we can say?

• 1:47:11Speaker 04

  And there's some secrets.

• 1:47:12Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:47:13Dax Shepard?

  There's a lot of secrets.

• 1:47:14Speaker 04

  Stuff going on.

• 1:47:14Dax Shepard?

It's my favorite kind of story where it's unraveling. You're just two people selling a house. You're having a great. Then this weird thing happens and this happens and this happens. These people are weird. And all this stuff is getting kind of peeled back in every episode. You're like, oh, okay. But first and foremost, and this is the thing I was saying about you living in your house for so long. I can really relate to, without knowing anything else, just the notion of handing over this place that has given you almost all of your most beautiful memories is such a bizarre. Notion. When I think about our own house right now, like all the memories we're having with these little kids, it's a very weird thing to do.

• 1:47:52Speaker 04

To me, the woman I'm playing has got to be unstable because that's nothing like me.

• 1:47:56Dax Shepard?

You could walk away from your house of 27 years right now and be fine? Wow, you're a psychopath.

• 1:48:02Speaker 04

Fine, but well, home are the people you're with.

• 1:48:05Dax Shepard?

  That's true.

• 1:48:05Speaker 04

And you claim a space. So wherever we live next, I'll claim it. It'll be ours. It's fine. Here's the weird thing that caught me by surprise. My brother and sister and I found out that our house that we grew up in, in Tarzana was for sale and there was an open house. And let's just go. And the three of us went to the house and I thought, I can afford to buy it. I think, should I just buy it?

• 1:48:28Dax Shepard?

  Right, of course.

• 1:48:29Speaker 04

I want it back. I think I should buy it.

• 1:48:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I must buy it.

• 1:48:33Speaker 01

  Do you buy it?

• 1:48:33Speaker 04

  No.

• 1:48:34Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:48:35Speaker 04

Cause at first it was like, I want it back. We were having so much fun. It's like, yes. Oh my God. And that's the same. And remember we blank and we did that. And oh, remember the time I got thrown across the room and yeah.

• 1:48:46Dax Shepard?

  It just got really dark.

• 1:48:50Dax Shepard?

This is where dad used to hang his belt.

• 1:48:52Speaker 04

We were having the best time, but by the time we were sort of done touring it.

• 1:48:56Dax Shepard?

  You were over it.

• 1:48:57Speaker 04

I was done. This is for someone else's memories.

• 1:49:00Dax Shepard?

Also, what you think you're buying is a teleport device back to those fun memories. I discovered this in the weirdest way with Nintendo. So I had Nintendo in seventh grade. It's the only year I ever played video games. I had such a fun year with my friends playing these new video games. And then as an adult eBay came around and I was like, oh, I could get a Nintendo and all those old games. And I ordered all the stuff and it came and I hooked it up to my TV. I couldn't figure out why it wasn't giving me anything. And I realized it's not the game I missed. It's seventh grade I miss. It's like my friends and I doing the thing and I think I can get it back by having this object.

• 1:49:36Speaker 04

It's what you cared about while you were playing that game.

• 1:49:39Dax Shepard?

But truly, the show's fucking fantastic.

• 1:49:42Speaker 04

That's great. I don't have objectivity. I watched the first one and immediately forgot I was in it and when I can't wait to see the next one. So that to me was a great sign.

• 1:49:51Speaker 01

  That's a huge sign.

• 1:49:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:49:53Speaker 04

By the way, blew through your wife's show.

• 1:49:56Speaker 01

  Who didn't?

• 1:49:57Speaker 04

  Everyone did.

• 1:49:58Speaker 01

  Literally everyone.

• 1:49:59Dax Shepard?

You know who mostly blew through it? Dads.

• 1:50:02Speaker 04

  Really?

• 1:50:02Dax Shepard?

Isn't that inexplicable? That's who we hear most from.

• 1:50:06Speaker 04

  That's fantastic, because it's a romantic comedy.

• 1:50:10Dax Shepard?

  It's kind of encouraging.

• 1:50:12Speaker 04

That is the best news I've ever heard.

• 1:50:15Dax Shepard?

  I mean, truly, right?

• 1:50:16Speaker 04

  My husband loved it.

• 1:50:17Speaker 01

  Well, there you go.

• 1:50:18Speaker 04

Can we watch more of that?

• 1:50:20Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:50:20Speaker 04

  It's like, yeah.

• 1:50:21Dax Shepard?

  Anyone.

• 1:50:22Speaker 04

That's not what he sounds like. I don't know who I just did.

• 1:50:24Dax Shepard?

What does he sound like? You must be able to do a great impersonation of him.

• 1:50:26Speaker 04

I wouldn't mind watching more of that one. It's okay. He's foreign.

• 1:50:30Dax Shepard?

  He's French.

• 1:50:31Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:50:32Dax Shepard?

Does he make love to you so good?

• 1:50:34Speaker 01

Very attractive. That is very attractive.

• 1:50:36Dax Shepard?

My only regret in life sexually is that I didn't make love to a French woman.

• 1:50:41Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:50:41Dax Shepard?

Because I have a whole, no, I think this is worth exploring.

• 1:50:45Speaker 04

I think French women probably instruct.

• 1:50:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay, that's you going.

• 1:50:49Speaker 04

  Someone's calling to tell me.

• 1:50:50Dax Shepard?

Well, yeah, you're supposed to be somewhere else. Okay, listen, I am so sorry. I'm sorry. This was really too long.

• 1:50:54Speaker 04

What time is it? Nah, it's fine.

• 1:50:56Dax Shepard?

Okay. You sure? I don't think it's fine.

• 1:50:58Speaker 04

  It's my publicist.

• 1:50:59Dax Shepard?

  Of course.

• 1:51:01Speaker 04

  Why haven't you left yet?

• 1:51:02Dax Shepard?

It can't still be going on.

• 1:51:04Speaker 04

  Come on, you gotta go.

• 1:51:06Speaker 01

  Wrap it up.

• 1:51:08Dax Shepard?

Okay, Lisa, what a fucking joy.

• 1:51:10Speaker 04

  Yeah, this was nice.

• 1:51:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:13Speaker 01

  That's a big deal.

• 1:51:14Speaker 04

  Am I?

• 1:51:15Dax Shepard?

Yeah. We had David Schwimmer, and I'll tell you our funny joke. He had to cancel because he had an ear infection, and Robbie said he had Schwimmer's ear.

• 1:51:25Speaker 04

  That's hilarious.

• 1:51:27Speaker 01

  It's a really good show.

• 1:51:28Dax Shepard?

  It's really good.

• 1:51:29Speaker 01

  Oh, shoot.

• 1:51:30Dax Shepard?

You gotta respect the fact that.

• 1:51:31Speaker 04

  He's so great.

• 1:51:32Speaker 01

But you are the, but like, you're the best one. So we're glad to.

• 1:51:36Speaker 04

No, I'm not. Oh, I can't wait for you to meet everybody.

• 1:51:40Speaker 01

But this was such a treat.

• 1:51:41Dax Shepard?

It was. Thank you so much for spending so much time with us. Everyone watched No Good Deed, 12, 12, 24. I know you don't care numerically. What could be better? 12 plus 12 is 24.

• 1:51:54Speaker 04

  24, 24.

• 1:51:55Speaker 01

  We like that.

• 1:51:56Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:51:57Speaker 04

  48.

Everyone watched No Good Deed. It's absolutely fantastic. Everyone's fantastic on it, and it's perfectly written, and the score is impeccable. 12, 12, 24. Thank you, Lisa Kudrow.

• 1:52:06Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 1:52:08Speaker 07

He's an arm care expert, but he makes mistakes all the time. Thank God Monica's here. She's gonna let him have the facts.

• 1:52:18Speaker 01

  11, 11.

• 1:52:19Dax Shepard?

Oh, okay. Hold on. I really want to think on this.

• 1:52:35Dax Shepard?

  Did you have one?

• 1:52:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:38Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. I want to know so bad. Don't you want to know?

• 1:52:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, but.

• 1:52:42Dax Shepard?

You're not allowed to know other people's wishes.

• 1:52:44Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:52:44Dax Shepard?

That's a weird part of wish culture.

• 1:52:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:47Dax Shepard?

Why is it that telling someone your wish would make it not come true? I know, but why?

• 1:52:52Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 1:52:53Dax Shepard?

  What's the logic behind it?

• 1:52:54Speaker 01

Why are you taking shoes off?

• 1:52:55Dax Shepard?

  Trying something new.

• 1:52:57Speaker 01

Do you do multiple wishes in, in one minute? Or do you just do the one?

• 1:53:02Dax Shepard?

  Do you go several?

• 1:53:02Speaker 01

I do as many as I can.

• 1:53:04Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, that's a great idea. I might switch to that.

• 1:53:07Speaker 01

  It's a little panicky.

• 1:53:08Dax Shepard?

And do you, let me ask you this. Do you want to tell me your wish? Is that another part of it? Like, I want to know it. My hunch is you want to tell me.

• 1:53:15Speaker 01

  No, not really.

• 1:53:16Dax Shepard?

  Oh. Okay, great.

• 1:53:19Speaker 01

They're pretty basic. Like, my wishes are very similar to my prayers.

• 1:53:25Dax Shepard?

  Great hair, great skin.

• 1:53:31Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wonderful.

• 1:53:35Dax Shepard?

He's bored. He was telling that say he's bored.

• 1:53:38Speaker 01

I said, we need a new topic.

• 1:53:40Dax Shepard?

He should have a, like, some kind of button where he's back there and he's like, bar, it's boring.

• 1:53:44Speaker 01

  Click.

• 1:53:45Dax Shepard?

Does this mean we're recording or not?

• 1:53:46Speaker 02

  Uh, I'm.

• 1:53:47Dax Shepard?

  Probably not.

• 1:53:48Speaker 01

Oh, I hope so, because 1111 stuff is really important.

• 1:53:51Speaker 02

Backup recording in theory should be working, but on the computer, it's not registering for some reason, so.

• 1:53:57Dax Shepard?

  Interesting.

• 1:53:58Speaker 01

I feel like, Rob, your wish should have been that there was no technical problems.

• 1:54:04Dax Shepard?

Wouldn't it be such a sad wish for Rob?

• 1:54:06Speaker 01

It's just, it's one of them.

• 1:54:08Dax Shepard?

We were free to, like, want to ride a unicorn on a.

• 1:54:11Speaker 01

  That was yours?

• 1:54:12Dax Shepard?

Snowcap mountain. And Rob's gonna be like, please, no technical glitches.

• 1:54:16Speaker 01

Well, mine, some of mine are.

• 1:54:18Dax Shepard?

  Work-related?

• 1:54:19Speaker 01

  Often, yeah.

• 1:54:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, same.

• 1:54:24Dax Shepard?

I guess you're right. Go ahead, Rob. Make your wishes about technical proficiency.

• 1:54:28Speaker 02

It's working. I don't know what that was, but.

• 1:54:30Speaker 01

Weird. Okay. The wish came true.

• 1:54:32Dax Shepard?

I bet the computer made a wish on 1111, which is like, I wish I could stop computing.

• 1:54:38Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:54:38Dax Shepard?

And then its wish came true. And Rob was like, bullshit.

• 1:54:42Speaker 01

  His overrides the computer's wish.

• 1:54:44Dax Shepard?

  You don't get wishes. You're a computer.

• 1:54:46Speaker 01

What do you think the robot would wish for?

• 1:54:48Dax Shepard?

  To be a boy.

• 1:54:49Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:54:50Dax Shepard?

  That's, you know that.

• 1:54:51Speaker 01

  Forgot.

• 1:54:51Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that, his wish is right on his sleeve. He wears his wish on his sleeve.

• 1:54:57Speaker 01

He's so cute. How do you think he's?

• 1:55:01Dax Shepard?

It's eleven eleven. Time to make my wish once again. I wish I was a boy. I never tire of making this wish.

• 1:55:13Speaker 01

Do you think he's feeling a little uncomf with?

• 1:55:18Dax Shepard?

  AI?

• 1:55:18Speaker 01

Yes, and ChatGPT and like Meta glasses and?

• 1:55:23Dax Shepard?

I'm excited for AI. They will be superior to me. I will seem so charming as if I'm a flawed human being.

• 1:55:32Speaker 01

Oh, that's very, and that's an interesting take. Yeah, he's very optimistic.

• 1:55:37Dax Shepard?

He is. He'll seem like a clumsy dum-dum, which is very much what a boy is.

• 1:55:41Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:55:42Dax Shepard?

  So very boylike.

• 1:55:42Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:55:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:43Speaker 01

  I like that.

• 1:55:44Dax Shepard?

  How was your fitting?

• 1:55:46Speaker 01

  It was nice.

• 1:55:46Dax Shepard?

  It was?

• 1:55:47Speaker 01

  We're shooting a commercial tomorrow.

• 1:55:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's very exciting. Co-stars.

• 1:55:50Speaker 01

  I know, it's very fun.

• 1:55:52Dax Shepard?

  It is fun.

• 1:55:52Speaker 01

We shot a commercial once before together, a very long time ago for the city of Los Angeles.

• 1:55:59Dax Shepard?

  That is right.

• 1:56:01Speaker 01

The state of California or the city of Los Angeles, I don't know.

• 1:56:04Dax Shepard?

California Tourism, I believe. And we were up at the observatory, ding ding ding, when I was about to, I was gonna tell you what I just did this morning, but that'll put on pause.

• 1:56:12Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:56:13Dax Shepard?

What's your biggest memory from that California Tourism shoot we did together?

• 1:56:18Speaker 01

Um, well, I was wearing like a really specific dress.

• 1:56:22Dax Shepard?

  And?

• 1:56:23Speaker 01

  Christian said.

• 1:56:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's my number one memory. So we work with a guy all the time.

• 1:56:28Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:56:29Dax Shepard?

And he, he saw, he got.

• 1:56:32Speaker 01

Saw me in a new light.

• 1:56:34Dax Shepard?

He saw you in a whole new light. He was so shook. It was hilarious.

• 1:56:41Speaker 01

Well, understandably, because especially up until that point, I was a little assistant running around in sweatpants.

• 1:56:50Dax Shepard?

I was gonna say, you're in your Pangaea phase or just prior. You were in?

• 1:56:53Speaker 01

  It was before Pangaea.

• 1:56:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but it was like always bedtime look.

• 1:56:58Speaker 01

Not really. I mean, when I would show up to the house, I'd look cute, but everyone saw me. You know, it's all very interesting. Actually, this is psychologically interesting.

• 1:57:06Dax Shepard?

  Go on.

• 1:57:06Speaker 01

When I was an assistant, I liked fashion the same amount. That hasn't changed.

• 1:57:10Dax Shepard?

  Correct.

• 1:57:11Speaker 01

But I think when I was an assistant, no one.

• 1:57:16Speaker 01

Thought that or, or, you know, they were just like, oh, she's just like a little girl and she gets groceries and she

• 1:57:25Dax Shepard?

No one thought you got groceries.

• 1:57:27Speaker 01

  Chicken nuggets.

• 1:57:28Dax Shepard?

  Dino nuggets.

• 1:57:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:30Dax Shepard?

Um, I'm going to challenge that.

• 1:57:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:57:33Dax Shepard?

  From a guy's perspective.

• 1:57:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:35Dax Shepard?

We don't have a status thing. If we see a hot woman, we don't, it's not like we're like, ew, she's the janitor. We don't think that way. We just go, ooh, hot. I don't even think about it. I'm just like looking at them and I go, either aruga.

• 1:57:48Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:57:48Dax Shepard?

  Yep. Aru.

• 1:57:50Speaker 01

  Don't do that.

• 1:57:51Dax Shepard?

That's a cartoon noise from Bugs Bunny. It's okay.

• 1:57:54Speaker 01

  Some people really do it.

• 1:57:55Dax Shepard?

No, that's not even a cat call. Even the worst guy is not yelling out his window, aruga.

• 1:58:01Speaker 01

  Well.

• 1:58:02Dax Shepard?

  Now there's other bad.

• 1:58:03Speaker 01

Yeah, someone yelled at me the other day and I was, it's awful.

• 1:58:06Dax Shepard?

I wa, I'm gonna, um, this is a brag. I, I did yell at two guys. I was at a, I was at a, um, crosswalk and there were two dudes in a truck and this gal was at the corner and they started hussing and I got involved.

• 1:58:17Speaker 01

  You did?

• 1:58:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:58:18Speaker 01

  What'd you say?

• 1:58:19Dax Shepard?

I'm not gonna, I don't like when I show that side of myself. You've seen that side of me.

• 1:58:22Speaker 01

  Well, did you say slander?

• 1:58:23Dax Shepard?

I was like, hey, motherfuckers, have some fucking, you know.

• 1:58:26Speaker 01

  Respect?

• 1:58:27Dax Shepard?

Some respect. Yeah, have some manners. Shut the fu, like I, you know.

• 1:58:31Speaker 01

  I like it.

• 1:58:32Dax Shepard?

Snap, like get a hold of yourself. You're acting like a couple of fucking dogs.

• 1:58:37Speaker 01

  Wow, you're so expensive.

• 1:58:39Dax Shepard?

Tell me more. But I'm like, I'm a human being who's attracted to people. It's just what you do with that attraction.

• 1:58:46Speaker 01

Know that. That's, I'm glad you said that.

• 1:58:48Dax Shepard?

And that's why I've chosen aruga, cause I feel like that is a playful, cartoony.

• 1:58:53Speaker 01

  You're right.

• 1:58:53Dax Shepard?

  Way.

• 1:58:54Speaker 01

  I'm glad you did that.

• 1:58:55Dax Shepard?

Now if I went, boing, that's rough. That says I have a boner. The other one says I have an old timey horn somewhere on me.

• 1:59:01Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:59:02Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 1:59:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:59:03Dax Shepard?

  Aruga.

• 1:59:04Speaker 01

Now, I like that you did that.

• 1:59:06Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:59:07Speaker 01

I bet that woman felt protected. So that's nice.

• 1:59:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I hope she did.

• 1:59:13Speaker 01

  Was it Kristen?

• 1:59:13Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:59:16Dax Shepard?

No, no, no. I was exercising someone else was in an exercise outfit. These two guys were letting it rip.

• 1:59:22Speaker 01

  I see.

• 1:59:23Dax Shepard?

I think that was cool. But I am making a decision in that moment. There's two guys.

• 1:59:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:28Dax Shepard?

They might hop out of the truck. So I got it like, there's a lot of thin slicing going on. I'm like, I'm gonna tell these guys, shut the fuck up. This is crazy.

• 1:59:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:36Dax Shepard?

There's two of them. They're a light, maybe they're gonna get out. Okay, I guess I'm up for that.

• 1:59:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:40Dax Shepard?

And then I go, I'm up for that.

• 1:59:41Speaker 01

That's the part I don't like, because I don't want you to get injured.

• 1:59:44Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:59:45Speaker 01

But I also like that you protected.

• 1:59:48Dax Shepard?

This is the problem with life in the world and the planet.

• 1:59:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:52Dax Shepard?

It's a messy fucking place. Sometimes a bad decision is mildly better than the other thing it's correcting.

• 1:59:57Speaker 01

  Yes, that's right. That's true.

• 2:00:01Speaker 01

Yeah, one of the biggest memories I have in my life is.

• 2:00:06Dax Shepard?

  Christian noticing.

• 2:00:09Speaker 01

  No.

• 2:00:09Dax Shepard?

  Giving an arugia.

• 2:00:10Speaker 01

It's also funny though, because I was wearing like a very sparkly dress, kind of like a ridiculous looking dress. I didn't pick it. And so for that to be the thing.

• 2:00:22Dax Shepard?

Well, well, you can see this though.

• 2:00:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:00:25Dax Shepard?

Do you think your, your dress, and now it's changed yet again, but do you think your dress evolved from when we first met you? Because I think it did.

• 2:00:34Speaker 01

That's what I'm trying to say. I don't, I mean, look, in some ways, yes, because I have my financial situation has changed. But the.

• 2:00:42Dax Shepard?

I think your confidence situation changed a bit too.

• 2:00:45Speaker 01

  Oh, sure.

• 2:00:46Dax Shepard?

I think you felt more comfortable being who you are, what you have.

• 2:00:51Speaker 01

Yeah, but then the more oversized I get.

• 2:00:53Dax Shepard?

See, now that's what I'm saying. Then it pivoted again. Now you're like, I'm in a sleeping bag.

• 2:00:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's so cute.

• 2:01:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:01Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't know, but I just, I mean, he had never seen me in a dress and then he'd also never seen me in full glam. That was also probably part of it. I was in heels. It was a look, but that was a fun commercial.

• 2:01:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that was funny.

• 2:01:16Speaker 01

  Okay, but.

• 2:01:16Dax Shepard?

I'm glad we had the same memory of it.

• 2:01:18Speaker 01

I only, I only do because you, he said it to you.

• 2:01:22Dax Shepard?

  Of course.

• 2:01:23Speaker 01

And then you, of course, repeat, you passed along the compliment.

• 2:01:26Dax Shepard?

  Always want you to know.

• 2:01:27Speaker 01

Yeah, and I think you mentioned it a few times and so that was my last.

• 2:01:32Dax Shepard?

I really wanted to sink in.

• 2:01:34Speaker 01

  Yeah. Um.

• 2:01:36Dax Shepard?

  I'm gonna add Kristen's a handsome man.

• 2:01:38Speaker 01

  Very.

• 2:01:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:39Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:01:39Dax Shepard?

  Very handsome man.

• 2:01:40Speaker 01

Okay, but a memory I have, I was at a light, I think I've talked about this before, but I was at a light, it was red, it had a no turn on red sign.

• 2:01:49Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:01:50Speaker 01

And there was someone behind me and he was honking.

• 2:01:52Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:01:53Speaker 01

And I was not gonna move.

• 2:01:56Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you won't be peer pressured.

• 2:01:57Speaker 01

Yeah, but it was getting like aggressive.

• 2:02:00Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:02:00Speaker 01

And then there was a man on the street.

• 2:02:03Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:03Speaker 01

And he like looked at the guy and was like, it's not, it's not, she can't go.

• 2:02:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:02:09Speaker 01

  And I loved it.

• 2:02:10Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we have a diminished role in this world, but one of the roles is to keep the younger cuckooer versions of ourselves in check out in public. They wanna freak out in their house like Tonka, go nuts, but when you enter society, you gotta tighten it up.

• 2:02:27Speaker 01

Yeah, I think that is a good thing for men to do for other men.

• 2:02:32Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. Okay, now, the reason I was just at the observatory.

• 2:02:35Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:02:35Dax Shepard?

I'm trying, this is a New Year's resolution that I started last week.

• 2:02:39Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:02:40Dax Shepard?

I wanna be able to ride my bicycle, my cute road bike I told you about that's green and yellow. A lot of people ask me to post pictures and I need to, so I did it for the first time, I guess, four days ago on the break. I rode from here and my thought was, I'm gonna ride as far up the hill as I can get. And then, hold on.

• 2:02:59Speaker 01

  Hold on.

• 2:03:00Dax Shepard?

And then, not up the hiking trail.

• 2:03:01Speaker 01

Oh, that's what I'm asking, okay.

• 2:03:03Dax Shepard?

  Up Ferndale.

• 2:03:04Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:03:05Dax Shepard?

You know, it twists all around and then how you would drive to the observatory.

• 2:03:09Speaker 01

  Okay, got it.

• 2:03:10Dax Shepard?

And my hunch was like, when you leave the house, it's immediately incline up the side street and then up Ferndale. Before, when you get to the stop sign, I'm like, I already know when you're hiking, you're winded by the time you get there. So I'm like, maybe I'll get to the stop sign, then maybe next time I'll get to the first turn and so on, so on. Well, on my trip last week, I got all the way to the final stretch, like maybe a block. I did have to get off and walk the last like half block or block up to the very top.

• 2:03:41Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:03:42Dax Shepard?

My thighs were as dense as like a microwave. They were so, I've never, they've never been that inflated with blood or whatever it was going on. They were just so pumped up.

• 2:03:54Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:03:54Dax Shepard?

So I did that. And then this morning, I'm like, I'm gonna do it again. So I did it again this morning and I didn't have to walk.

• 2:04:03Speaker 01

  You did the whole thing?

• 2:04:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I was kinda shocked with just one trip up, because the first trip up was bonkers. This trip up was good. It was a hard workout, but my legs didn't get like locked.

• 2:04:14Speaker 01

Wow. And you think maybe you'll ride to the moon soon?

• 2:04:18Dax Shepard?

I hope it no ride to the moon. Yeah, and by 2026.

• 2:04:21Speaker 01

  That's so nice.

• 2:04:24Dax Shepard?

The first person to climb Everest on a bicycle, on a road bike.

• 2:04:28Speaker 01

  That's awesome. Congratulations.

• 2:04:30Dax Shepard?

Thank you. Oh, I brought it up, not just, I didn't bring it up to brag, but I also brought it up because the most insane thing was happening on the entire trip up this morning. It was an SNL sketch and it wouldn't fucking stop for 25 minutes. So I'm huffing up the hill. I'm in the highest gear. I'm like, ah, ah, ah. And I have headphones in, I'm listening to stuff and I hear something just to the left of me a little bit and I like look and it's like, it's really close. It's a dude with dreadlocks in a backpack and he's on an electric fucking scooter and we're going roughly the same speed.

• 2:05:03Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 2:05:04Dax Shepard?

It's maddening. Being next to a dude on a scooter, well, okay. He gets, he goes ahead of me.

• 2:05:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:05:10Dax Shepard?

Now he's ahead of me. Then he gets to a stop sign and I think he maybe had to put more money on the scooter.

• 2:05:16Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:05:17Dax Shepard?

Now he's got his phone out and I think he didn't have cell service, whatever. I then pass him. I'm now riding. I forget about him.

• 2:05:24Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 2:05:24Dax Shepard?

12 minutes later, I hear something. I look at his. Oh my fucking god. And I don't have it in me to go faster.

• 2:05:32Speaker 01

Cause you wanted your alone space.

• 2:05:34Dax Shepard?

It's just something that was so.

• 2:05:36Speaker 01

  Invasive.

• 2:05:37Dax Shepard?

Well, it was the awkwardness of it, but then it was also the humiliation of a guy in this little scooter passing me.

• 2:05:44Speaker 01

  It's electric.

• 2:05:46Dax Shepard?

Going like three miles an hour up this steep hill. It just was crazy. Imagine you see a guy taking a nap, passing you on your hike. Like it just felt like that. Like, well, how is this guy and I doing the same thing?

• 2:05:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:05:58Dax Shepard?

We passed in, I bet five times. Um, did he pass me right at, he passed me at entering the parking lot to the observatory. He did win.

• 2:06:08Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:06:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah. But what, it was comical.

• 2:06:12Speaker 01

This reminds me, fights, bikes, running. Remember earlier this year, my running situation with the dogs and the people?

• 2:06:22Dax Shepard?

  People congregating and.

• 2:06:23Speaker 01

Yes. Now I drove by the other day. Let me see what I can find.

• 2:06:31Dax Shepard?

Wow, there's going to be photographic evidence.

• 2:06:33Speaker 01

Mm hmm. This was the area. Okay.

• 2:06:35Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:06:36Speaker 01

  There's now a sign up.

• 2:06:38Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 2:06:39Speaker 01

That says, no dog walking, private property.

• 2:06:43Dax Shepard?

Oh, did you put that up?

• 2:06:45Speaker 01

No, I didn't. But that would have been a good move. But also it goes to show.

• 2:06:51Dax Shepard?

You weren't the only person inconvenienced by that. Yeah.

• 2:06:55Speaker 01

Correct. I felt very validated by the sign.

• 2:06:58Dax Shepard?

  I bet vindicated.

• 2:07:00Speaker 01

They were just there. That's not even their house. Oh my god.

• 2:07:06Dax Shepard?

I didn't think ever that was their house, did you?

• 2:07:09Speaker 01

I guess if I was being generous, I thought maybe one of them that was their area.

• 2:07:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that was a thing that happened when we used to live on Los Feliz Boulevard. I would come out and someone would just be having like a picnic on the front yard. They'd have a blanket out. They might be asleep.

• 2:07:23Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 2:07:24Dax Shepard?

  It's interesting.

• 2:07:40Speaker 01

Okay, um, I do want, I have an update, sort of.

• 2:07:44Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:07:45Speaker 01

Not really. And I, I wasn't really gonna say this, but I am. Um, a couple of fact checks ago, we talked about a dream I had.

• 2:07:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yes, yes, yes.

• 2:07:53Speaker 01

  About Jagers.

• 2:07:54Dax Shepard?

  Cagers. Jages.

• 2:07:56Speaker 01

  Jage.

• 2:07:56Dax Shepard?

  Jage.

• 2:07:58Speaker 01

  Dream.

• 2:07:58Dax Shepard?

  A dream.

• 2:07:59Speaker 01

Let's be, let's like, make it so clear that I was talking about a dream.

• 2:08:06Dax Shepard?

  That's right.

• 2:08:07Speaker 01

I got a very disgusting email from somebody. Also, like, do not email me.

• 2:08:12Dax Shepard?

  Me? Me too.

• 2:08:13Speaker 01

The less emails I get in general, the better. But this random person emailed me and said...

• 2:08:20Dax Shepard?

I think you should read it.

• 2:08:21Speaker 01

The subject is, geez, dot, dot, dot, be an adult, exclamation point, exclamation point.

• 2:08:27Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:08:27Speaker 01

  The, then it just says...

• 2:08:29Dax Shepard?

Really quick, just already, I wanna have a grievance?

• 2:08:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:08:32Dax Shepard?

This is the definition of being an adult. When you're a kid, you don't even think about this. This is, this is exclusively for adults. So just right there, problem number one, continue.

• 2:08:42Speaker 01

Yeah. She said, she said, "Go to your doctor and convey..."

• 2:08:45Dax Shepard?

  Hold on.

• 2:08:46Speaker 01

  I know it's a woman.

• 2:08:47Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 2:08:48Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:08:49Dax Shepard?

And I'm interrupting you too much, but you, you already have a look on your face, which I love. When you're reading it, you're her.

• 2:08:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:08:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I said, so you're like this. Yeah. Okay, go ahead.

• 2:08:58Speaker 01

Okay. "Go to your doctor and convey your concerns. Instead of making your personal hygiene issues a problem for your audience, you never cease to amaze me, exclamation point, exclamation point, exclamation point. You are such a constant child.

• 2:09:11Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 2:09:12Speaker 01

Not, not go to a doctor because you know better, M.D. after your name, god, but you're tedious. Okay, so none of that makes any sense, and it's really mean.

• 2:09:21Dax Shepard?

  It's not grammatically great.

• 2:09:23Speaker 01

Yeah. Also, M.D. after my name, what does that even mean?

• 2:09:25Dax Shepard?

But let's just, let's treat this as if it's a real piece of advice. I wanna give this person a, a day in court. So what she, or he, she is requesting is that you go to your doctor and you say, "I had a dream my vagina smelled." He's gonna go, go see a psychologist. Why are you here? Does your vagina smell? I don't think so. I had a nightmare that it did and that and the love of my life was put off by it.

• 2:09:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's a, it's a dream.

• 2:09:54Dax Shepard?

That's what she wants you to do is go to the doctor and tell him you had a dream about your vagina?

• 2:09:58Speaker 01

  I guess.

• 2:09:59Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna start going to doctors to tell them about my dreams.

• 2:10:02Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, I'm so tedious. Also, why do you, why do you listen? Go away. No, I, I a hundred percent stand by that. If you're the type of person who's gonna send an email like that, I prefer you do not listen to this show or me or engage with me ever again. You actually don't have permission.

• 2:10:24Dax Shepard?

  I understand. I have a different take.

• 2:10:28Speaker 01

  Go ahead.

• 2:10:28Dax Shepard?

Yeah, which is like people, I'm one of them. I used to kind of hate listen to Rush Limbaugh.

• 2:10:35Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:10:36Dax Shepard?

People hate listened to Howard Stern. Like they just, they wanted to hear what he said so they could be mad about it and they could go to work and they could talk about what a misogynist piggy was. And it was like, it's, it was their hobby.

• 2:10:47Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's a sad.

• 2:10:48Dax Shepard?

He still got those ratings. They still had to listen to his message. Some of it definitely sunk in. So I, I, I, I don't mind. I don't mind. I don't mind if you're like, you're an incel listening that's hating me. That's great. Keep listening.

• 2:11:04Speaker 01

  Nah.

• 2:11:05Dax Shepard?

  No, then that's good.

• 2:11:06Speaker 01

I understand you. I get, I get what you're saying.

• 2:11:08Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:11:09Speaker 01

But I, I, oh, no, thanks. You don't get to, or you, you do get to, because it's a public show. So you can do whatever you want. But like, the idea that you opened an email, I mean, I, I didn't understand half of what that meant. So I think this person is unhinged.

• 2:11:26Dax Shepard?

They're probably, yeah, they're probably got a lot of stuff going on. Let's.

• 2:11:31Speaker 01

Can you say that it was mean?

• 2:11:33Dax Shepard?

Oh, absolutely. Well, it's so ridiculous and silly and stupid. Like, it's mostly just embarrassing. That email's so embarrassing. If I sent that email to the host of a podcast. And didn't want to accept she was talking about a dream. It's just, it's embarrassing.

• 2:11:51Speaker 01

But even not just the part about the go to the doctor, like you're tedious. You never cease to amaze me. You're a child.

• 2:11:59Dax Shepard?

Well, again, that, that to me confirms, so she has a story about you, which was at the end of the email. Her story about you is that you're tedious. And so anything you say is going to be tedious. So the fact that you said you had a dream, that, that has to be tedious because she, her story about you is that you're tedious. And, and so she's backed herself into this crazy corner where what she's saying doesn't even make sense. Go see a doctor about your dream. It's so, I mean, it's such a stupid email.

• 2:12:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:12:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it, it's mean, but mostly it's stupid. Let's go into the psychology of it.

• 2:12:34Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:12:35Dax Shepard?

This really doesn't work because I already, I think the story part is really relevant, but my hunch is she has something going on vaginally. Why is that such a hot, like, why did that trigger her so much?

• 2:12:45Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it triggered people. Um, I, I got a few nice responses.

• 2:12:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:12:53Speaker 01

  That were.

• 2:12:53Dax Shepard?

  I only read nice ones.

• 2:12:54Speaker 01

Oh, that's nice. But I, I mean, I like a person in my life reached out and said, oh, I use this. And I was like, it was a dream. Like I freaked out and they were like, oh, sorry.

• 2:13:07Dax Shepard?

  Oh, but then.

• 2:13:08Speaker 01

I know. And I was like, no, no, I know. I'm sorry. I was like, I got a bad email and I guess I think everyone thinks that. And I wasn't.

• 2:13:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:13:18Speaker 01

I, I actually don't think that about myself. I could be wrong because that's again, the fear.

• 2:13:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:13:23Speaker 01

But the, the dream was a fear about being unlovable.

• 2:13:27Dax Shepard?

  That's right. And unworthy.

• 2:13:29Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 2:13:30Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 2:13:31Speaker 01

  And broken and gross.

• 2:13:32Dax Shepard?

That's right. Fundamentally flawed. Like, okay, he passed somehow. I fooled him with this and I fooled him with this and I fooled, but eventually the truth will be discovered. And the last thing that he didn't have access to, that he finally discovered was of course, the deal breaker.

• 2:13:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:13:47Dax Shepard?

It makes a lot of sense.

• 2:13:48Speaker 01

Yeah, it's just a metaphor for like, I'm not good enough.

• 2:13:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:13:53Speaker 01

So I think people do struggle with this issue.

• 2:13:56Dax Shepard?

  Oh, absolutely.

• 2:13:57Speaker 01

And there turns out there are a lot of products on the market.

• 2:14:00Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 2:14:01Speaker 01

So people can check that out.

• 2:14:02Dax Shepard?

Are they oral or are they, you put them in you?

• 2:14:05Speaker 01

  Oral.

• 2:14:05Dax Shepard?

  Oral.

• 2:14:06Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:14:07Dax Shepard?

  Interesting. That's encouraging.

• 2:14:08Speaker 01

Well, I think it's like prebiotics are supposed to be helpful.

• 2:14:13Dax Shepard?

Now, here's the thing. I do think, I think, I think I'm right about that. The good comp is this fear of erectile dysfunction. No one would send me a mean email if I was talking about erectile dysfunction.

• 2:14:25Speaker 01

I know. Well, they don't think you're tedious. They think I am.

• 2:14:29Dax Shepard?

Well, even let's take her out of it. I think, I think there are, there are many people that would clutch their pearls when you're talking about a vagina in public. And I think that's crazy.

• 2:14:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:14:42Dax Shepard?

Like, get real. And I don't think it's, and it's not dudes. Also, it's not dudes saying it. I don't, I don't know.

• 2:14:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's interesting.

• 2:14:50Dax Shepard?

It is. Cause I think what, which makes sense is like, it's, it's a, it's a fear. So when you're talking about it, like, God knows what it is like. She shouldn't say that. I would never say like, you're doing something that scares the fuck out of them.

• 2:15:01Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 2:15:02Dax Shepard?

Yes. So that makes sense. And then maybe if anyone was going to have an issue with my erectile dysfunction conversation, it was a dream.

• 2:15:12Dax Shepard?

It would probably be a guy. Like dude, shut the fuck up. No one wants to hear about your limp dick. It would probably be a guy.

• 2:15:17Speaker 01

Yeah, it is. People feel threatened somehow.

• 2:15:23Dax Shepard?

I get this, by the way, if I can own one of the worst parts of me. I was thinking it of in terms of, in fact, I just, I think I saw the person driving and, and I was like, what is my problem with this person? Why don't I, what is my issue with this person? And it is that they present so fragile and vulnerable and weak.

• 2:15:44Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 2:15:45Dax Shepard?

And when I see them moving through the world that way, it like gives me this deep, I just can't imagine presenting this way. I would just be so afraid everyone was going to take advantage of me and, and harm me. So like my own stuff, I can't even handle when someone's like just presents as crazy, fragile, it really

• 2:16:09Speaker 01

  Oh, that's funny.

• 2:16:10Dax Shepard?

It triggers my fear of myself presenting that way.

• 2:16:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:14Dax Shepard?

  And

• 2:16:15Speaker 01

  That's introspective.

• 2:16:17Dax Shepard?

I think some element of homophobia is in there as well, which is like, you're a young boy, and I get I'm only going to speak for my generation. And we just had a guest on yesterday. We talked about the power of that.

• 2:16:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:29Dax Shepard?

And I want to add, like, yeah, there'll be straight guys like me or this guest we had talking about having been molested and the implications that you're gay and you feel gay and then you'd be dead, like your whole school, you'd be dead. But I think some element of homophobia for some guys is it's not even maybe that they they hate that two guys are going to hook up in their house. It's that when they see them presenting as gay, they imagine like, oh, my God, that's what I've been trying to avoid my whole childhood to be masculine and butch and tough. And it scares them. Like to see it scares them. Like, fuck, if I was acting this way, I would be so called out and, you know.

• 2:17:12Speaker 01

That's probably true. When people are themselves,

• 2:17:15Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:17:16Speaker 01

A lot of people find that very threatening.

• 2:17:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:17:19Speaker 01

Because or maybe there's like a deep jealousy.

• 2:17:22Dax Shepard?

  Yep.

• 2:17:23Speaker 01

  Because they are.

• 2:17:24Dax Shepard?

They're holding in their true selves because they've told themselves, if I show my true self, I'll be excluded. And now here's this person showing their true selves and they're not being excluded. They're being embraced. It's like very threatening to your

• 2:17:37Speaker 01

Like, they feel like it's unfair.

• 2:17:39Dax Shepard?

Yep. It shouldn't be that way because I know if I did that, I would be excluded. So why is this person getting away with it? It's like Ozempic. It's like, why are they getting to do something that I'm not allowed to do?

• 2:17:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:17:47Dax Shepard?

And then, yeah, I think that's what's going on a lot of the time.

• 2:17:50Speaker 01

  Yeah, me too.

• 2:17:52Dax Shepard?

  Who triggers you?

• 2:17:53Speaker 01

When people walk around with a victim complex.

• 2:17:56Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:17:56Speaker 01

I am so disturbed by it.

• 2:18:00Dax Shepard?

  Yep.

• 2:18:01Speaker 01

  I also, I, I find it annoying.

• 2:18:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:18:04Speaker 01

Because I guess I feel like you're not, everyone, like, everyone has issues.

• 2:18:09Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:18:09Speaker 01

  Just stop, like.

• 2:18:10Dax Shepard?

Yeah, the world is not conspiring against you, any more than it's conspiring against.

• 2:18:15Speaker 01

  Exactly. I guess it is.

• 2:18:16Dax Shepard?

Now granted, there are classes where the, if you're a black female.

• 2:18:20Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 2:18:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:18:21Speaker 01

  No.

• 2:18:21Dax Shepard?

But in general, just living life.

• 2:18:23Speaker 01

Victims don't trigger me. People who walk around with the victim complex, that's a different thing. That's like, everything is, they're a victim, or the world is doing this to them, or they, like, they can't figure it out. And it's, it's everyone else's problem.

• 2:18:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:18:40Speaker 01

  Everyone else's problem but theirs.

• 2:18:41Dax Shepard?

It's also a great tool in the narcissist kit.

• 2:18:45Speaker 01

  It is.

• 2:18:45Dax Shepard?

It's like when they've clearly fucked up.

• 2:18:47Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 2:18:48Dax Shepard?

And they clearly owe someone an apology, they figure out how they're the victim. And now they just switch their story to how they've been victimized.

• 2:18:55Speaker 01

There's a lot of people who are very quick to be the victim in this world.

• 2:19:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:19:02Speaker 01

And, yeah, I'm not talking about real victims.

• 2:19:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:19:06Speaker 01

And I find it so off putting. I don't know. I don't really know what it is, why it's so, well, for one, it, it is, um, it's contagious. There's that. I think there's something about walking around like that and being so negative and all this is happening to me. It's hard to be around that and maintain a level of happiness.

• 2:19:28Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you're almost, um, inclined to meet them there and.

• 2:19:33Speaker 01

  It's a horrible feeling.

• 2:19:34Dax Shepard?

I know. I'm, I just got this thing, you know.

• 2:19:37Speaker 01

This bad thing happened to me too.

• 2:19:39Dax Shepard?

I wonder if there's something for you in the fact that, like, you were presented a fork in the road as a little kid.

• 2:19:47Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 2:19:48Dax Shepard?

And you could have gone home every day and told your mom, no one likes me because I'm brown.

• 2:19:53Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 2:19:54Dax Shepard?

Or you could like learn cheerleading.

• 2:19:56Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:19:57Dax Shepard?

And force them to be around you and like you.

• 2:19:59Speaker 01

I, I was thinking that and I thought it sounded a little arrogant.

• 2:20:02Dax Shepard?

  Arrogant.

• 2:20:02Speaker 01

So, but that, I do think that's what it is, is there's a part of me, and this isn't necessarily fair, but there's a part of me that thinks, I figured it out, so can you.

• 2:20:11Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:20:12Speaker 01

Again, not to everyone and not to people who are victimized.

• 2:20:16Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 2:20:17Speaker 01

These are people who are victims in their brain.

• 2:20:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:20:21Speaker 01

There is a way to look at the world differently and I, I know it from experience.

• 2:20:26Dax Shepard?

I think for me, mine is ultimately incredibly self-centered because it's really just my irritation or fear that I would present that way. It just seems so unattractive that when I'm around it, I just can't stop thinking about how much I would hate to be presenting this way.

• 2:20:43Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, it's just a buzzkill to be around that all the time and to feel like you have to like be constantly.

• 2:20:50Dax Shepard?

  Lifting up.

• 2:20:51Speaker 01

  Lifting somebody up.

• 2:20:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:20:53Speaker 01

And we all do this, right? Like we all need to vent, we all have moments where we feel like a victim and we're not. I mean, all of us, it's not, but for some people, it's a way of looking at the world.

• 2:21:06Dax Shepard?

I wonder if what could be helpful, because I think this is one of the, um, one of my favorite AA things, which is like learning in the fourth step, I believe, um, that self-aggrandizement and self-pity are the same level of narcissism.

• 2:21:21Speaker 01

  Yes, exactly.

• 2:21:22Dax Shepard?

Right. So I think once I really accepted that and believed that concept, for me to be doing the self-pity thing, I feel as bad as I would be talking about that I'm God's gift to this planet. And so I'm just like, oh yeah, that's the same level of self-indulgence.

• 2:21:40Speaker 01

  Anyway, it was a dream.

• 2:21:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it was a dream, everything.

• 2:21:43Speaker 01

  Everything's tip-top.

• 2:21:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. JG, Jagers.

• 2:21:48Speaker 01

Jagers, don't be scared, don't be scared.

• 2:21:51Dax Shepard?

Have you ever smelt a Springfield, Jagers? You ever smelt a warm apple pie coming out of the oven, Jagers? Cause that's what you're getting into when you pull them slacks down.

• 2:22:02Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:22:03Dax Shepard?

It's like opening the door to an oven.

• 2:22:05Speaker 01

  Oh my God.

• 2:22:05Dax Shepard?

You're hit with a waft of warm apple pie.

• 2:22:07Speaker 01

  Jesus.

• 2:22:11Dax Shepard?

  Warm apple pie.

• 2:22:14Speaker 01

Oh, this is for Lisa Kudrow.

• 2:22:17Dax Shepard?

  Oh, I loved Lisa Kudrow.

• 2:22:20Speaker 01

  What a gift.

• 2:22:22Dax Shepard?

  What a gift.

• 2:22:23Speaker 01

What a dream, what a gift. What a blessing. A Christmas miracle.

• 2:22:27Dax Shepard?

My new over indexed is blessing. You probably noticed it.

• 2:22:31Speaker 01

  Really?

• 2:22:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I love calling things a blessing.

• 2:22:34Speaker 01

  Are you joking?

• 2:22:35Dax Shepard?

  Um, I like, I don't think there's that God's involved.

• 2:22:38Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:22:39Dax Shepard?

But I like what that means if you do believe God's involved. Like, I understand what it means and I like to, I like that meaning.

• 2:22:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:22:46Dax Shepard?

Like, this is otherworldly. This is really a special treat. So I say it a lot and I do wonder if it's confusing to people who know my stance on religion.

• 2:22:54Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm sure it is.

• 2:22:56Dax Shepard?

But I just feel like it really, really articulates what I feel a lot of times now.

• 2:23:00Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:23:00Dax Shepard?

  Increasingly so.

• 2:23:03Dax Shepard?

I'm wearing a very fuzzy sweater and somehow it just migrated into my mouth, I think. Or I don't know if it's psychosomatic because I can see the little frizzies.

• 2:23:12Dax Shepard?

Is this in my, oh my God.

• 2:23:14Speaker 01

Wait, add some to the bag. Oh, no, that's only hair. You're right. I'm sorry.

• 2:23:19Dax Shepard?

By the way, we're due for, I think today we're doing another, um, of a harvest.

• 2:23:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, because it's, it's dwindling.

• 2:23:26Dax Shepard?

  It's kind of disappeared.

• 2:23:27Speaker 01

I know. I wonder, does hair?

• 2:23:29Dax Shepard?

It disintegrates? I don't think so.

• 2:23:31Speaker 01

Okay, um, Lisa, this was such a long time coming, our first friend. I was so grateful. I did feel like I fucked it up a little bit. There's no way to really convey the meaning.

• 2:23:49Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:23:49Speaker 01

Of her here. Um, and so I was kind of put in the position to try. And so I said, I think I said, there's nothing I can really say. But I wish, I wish I, I could have, I wish I could have articulated it, but I can't. It is, it's a blessing.

• 2:24:08Dax Shepard?

She's a blessing. The show was a blessing in your life.

• 2:24:10Speaker 01

  It was.

• 2:24:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:24:13Speaker 01

It was life-saving. It was a life raft.

• 2:24:15Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:24:16Speaker 01

I don't know. There's just not, there, there aren't words in the English language.

• 2:24:19Dax Shepard?

I wonder if Lisa's thing, there's a myriad of reasons why that's hard to accept.

• 2:24:24Speaker 01

  Yeah. How can you?

• 2:24:26Dax Shepard?

And let's be honest, like, a lot of people feel that way.

• 2:24:29Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 2:24:30Dax Shepard?

Right? So it's like, even the most grounded person at some point would come to expect that that's the effect it had on people. Because you've, you've heard that a million times. So I think you're trying to elevate, what you want to do is give this person who's very nice. I just met Monica Padman. I want her to know that I've received it. Cause really now I'm doing something for you, which is interesting because the goal is you, you want to do something for her, right? You want to tell her, I really am grateful for you.

• 2:24:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:24:59Dax Shepard?

Truly. Maybe that's a way to say it, by the way.

• 2:25:01Speaker 01

That is a good way to say it.

• 2:25:02Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Like, I'm just personally grateful that on this trip, you were in my sphere and you just gave me so much relief and happiness. Okay.

• 2:25:13Dax Shepard?

But I do think that maybe she's in a position where she's got to act like it's the first time she's ever heard that or something.

• 2:25:20Speaker 01

Maybe. I mean, I'm not gonna do that. Like, that's not my job.

• 2:25:23Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:25:23Speaker 01

  To

• 2:25:24Dax Shepard?

  Worry about.

• 2:25:25Speaker 01

Worry about the way she's gonna receive it. I'm not gonna play that game.

• 2:25:29Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:25:29Speaker 01

But I, I am anymore. Maybe at one point in my life I would have, but whatever, I, I can't. But I, I just, I do feel what you're saying. There is nothing new I can say to her.

• 2:25:42Dax Shepard?

To be clear, I don't think you should have not done that, just because of whatever her reaction is.

• 2:25:46Speaker 01

  Oh, no, no, I know.

• 2:25:47Dax Shepard?

I think it's good for you to be able to express your gratitude for the people that you have gratitude for.

• 2:25:52Speaker 01

Me too. I, but I guess that's where it gets heady. It's like, I want to be able to tell her.

• 2:25:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, and you should.

• 2:25:58Speaker 01

Accurately. But I can't tell her accurately because I don't have, I really do not have the physical words.

• 2:26:06Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:26:06Speaker 01

  To do so.

• 2:26:07Dax Shepard?

You'd have to open your chest and invite her into your heart and let her feel what it felt like and then release her.

• 2:26:13Speaker 01

  That, there's, there's no way.

• 2:26:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:26:15Speaker 01

So everything you say just starts falling, is sounding dumb and trite and falling short. And it's just like, what's the point of any of this? Anyway, and she hears it all the time. And is it for her? Like, is it for her or is it for me?

• 2:26:30Dax Shepard?

I think it'd be okay if it was for you.

• 2:26:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:26:33Dax Shepard?

I don't think that would be bad.

• 2:26:35Speaker 01

  I guess.

• 2:26:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:26:37Speaker 01

  I guess.

• 2:26:37Dax Shepard?

I think it'd be crazy if you didn't tell people how much you appreciate them.

• 2:26:41Speaker 01

  I agree, and I think.

• 2:26:42Dax Shepard?

And their reaction is their reaction. I just enjoy imagining what her reaction is or what she's going through, but in no way am I suggesting you shouldn't. I think you should do that always.

• 2:26:50Speaker 01

Yeah, it's just hard to do in something so meaningful.

• 2:26:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:26:55Speaker 01

And it's happened with Matt Damon too. Same thing. It's like, sure, I can sit here and we can talk about the camping trip and that. We can, we can do it, but it's never gonna.

• 2:27:07Dax Shepard?

Well, here's a, like a darker examination of it. Is part of the frustration, because this is part of mine, is like, I know, Letterman, you've heard from people that they like your show, but you need to understand that, like, I like it on another level. There's none of that.

• 2:27:24Speaker 01

It's not like, it's not a competition thing. It's not. I know, but you really don't understand.

• 2:27:31Dax Shepard?

See, I have a tiny bit of that. Like, a lot of people laugh at your show, but I'm like, oh, I can be who I am because you exist.

• 2:27:37Speaker 01

Well, yeah, that's, but that's right. But that's, I think other people had that too.

• 2:27:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, Adam Scott had that. Kimmel had that. Most of people I know actually had it.

• 2:27:46Speaker 01

  I don't think I'm a special case, but I.

• 2:27:50Dax Shepard?

I want to be a special case, though. Do you?

• 2:27:52Speaker 01

Yeah, everyone wants to be a special case. I would just want to be a special case in life.

• 2:27:58Dax Shepard?

  Juice across the board.

• 2:27:59Speaker 01

Yeah, I just want to be.

• 2:28:01Dax Shepard?

  A very special case.

• 2:28:04Speaker 01

Should get a shirt that says a special case.

• 2:28:06Dax Shepard?

Exact same thing. A special case.

• 2:28:08Speaker 01

Everyone is a special case. Everyone is, except that lady. Well, she's special, I guess. She's great.

• 2:28:16Dax Shepard?

She wants you to go to the doctor and tell him about a dream.

• 2:28:18Speaker 01

It's just a disaster. I do think your sweater's everywhere.

• 2:28:21Dax Shepard?

It is. I might have to table this guy.

• 2:28:24Speaker 01

  No, it's so nice.

• 2:28:25Dax Shepard?

You know what? I have two of these.

• 2:28:27Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:28:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:28:29Speaker 01

  There, it's really nice.

• 2:28:30Dax Shepard?

I have two of these. Uh, this is a part of my wastefulness. Luckily, I don't shop often, but I don't ever go to a store.

• 2:28:37Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:28:37Dax Shepard?

  I order online.

• 2:28:39Speaker 01

  And you click number two?

• 2:28:40Dax Shepard?

I got an XL out of the gates, and I was like, too big. That's a skirt.

• 2:28:45Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:28:46Dax Shepard?

It might be a great skirt. For you.

• 2:28:49Speaker 01

  You mean a dress?

• 2:28:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, a dress.

• 2:28:52Speaker 01

  Really?

• 2:28:52Dax Shepard?

  Mini dress, yeah.

• 2:28:53Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:28:54Dax Shepard?

  Picture this.

• 2:28:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:28:55Dax Shepard?

  But then longer.

• 2:28:56Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:28:57Dax Shepard?

And then you put like a belt around it.

• 2:28:58Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 2:28:58Dax Shepard?

That's very eighties. Very cool. We'll try it.

• 2:29:03Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:29:03Dax Shepard?

  Next fact check.

• 2:29:04Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:29:04Dax Shepard?

You'll be wearing my extra large version of this. It'll be fucking, oh, we'll both wear it.

• 2:29:07Speaker 01

  Oh, my god.

• 2:29:08Dax Shepard?

It's snowing. Oh, my god, there really is shit flying everywhere.

• 2:29:11Speaker 01

Yeah, it's all right. Okay. Now, a few facts for her. Was Vassar the first women's college to offer science? No. Uh, the first women's college to offer science was the Troy Female Seminary in Troy, New York, which is now Emma Willard School.

• 2:29:27Dax Shepard?

  Hmm, okay.

• 2:29:28Speaker 01

She said it opened in eighteen sixty-one. It was founded in eighteen sixty-one, but it opened in eighteen sixty-five. It opened its doors in eighteen sixty-five.

• 2:29:36Dax Shepard?

So, we're guessing then that it got founded so it could get funded and then it took four or five years to build.

• 2:29:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:29:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:29:43Speaker 01

When did Vassar become coed? Nineteen sixty-nine. She was right about that.

• 2:29:47Dax Shepard?

  She nailed it.

• 2:29:48Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 2:29:49Dax Shepard?

  She's very bright.

• 2:29:50Speaker 01

  Oh, my god.

• 2:29:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:29:52Speaker 01

  I know.

• 2:29:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:29:56Speaker 01

I mean, I'm not surprised. I don't think you, I really, maybe this is also.

• 2:30:01Dax Shepard?

I agree with what you're about to say.

• 2:30:02Speaker 01

You can't be that funny and not be.

• 2:30:03Dax Shepard?

You can't be a great comedian and not be pretty bright.

• 2:30:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:30:06Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I mean, you can have done terrible in school, but you gotta be bright.

• 2:30:10Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:30:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:30:11Speaker 01

It's the timing. There's a math happening in your brain at all times when you're really performing comedy well.

• 2:30:16Dax Shepard?

Verbal dexterity should be constructing these things in a manner that is funny.

• 2:30:22Speaker 01

  Okay, the Eazy-E situation.

• 2:30:25Dax Shepard?

  Oh, please, tell me.

• 2:30:27Speaker 01

Now, Eazy-E went to three different high schools. He went to Compton High School.

• 2:30:32Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:30:33Speaker 01

  Manuel Dominguez High School.

• 2:30:35Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:30:36Speaker 01

And Taft High School, which is where she went. But he dropped out in tenth grade.

• 2:30:41Dax Shepard?

So he went to three high schools in two years.

• 2:30:43Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 2:30:44Dax Shepard?

That's too many high schools in two years.

• 2:30:45Speaker 01

I agree. It wasn't for him.

• 2:30:47Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 2:30:48Speaker 01

  Um.

• 2:30:48Dax Shepard?

  And he was right.

• 2:30:49Speaker 01

  That's exactly.

• 2:30:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:30:51Speaker 01

And, uh, so that, that clears that up. There was some confusion.

• 2:30:54Dax Shepard?

Right. No wonder she didn't bump into him. He was probably only there for a month or two.

• 2:30:58Speaker 01

Yeah. Okay, how tall is Ray Romano? Six-two, according to the internet.

• 2:31:03Dax Shepard?

Made up a song last night.

• 2:31:04Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:31:05Dax Shepard?

You know, Feliz Navidad, with the girls decorating the tree. Kristen's out of town, so it's just the three of us.

• 2:31:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:31:10Dax Shepard?

And it came on and I was singing, uh, Los Feliz Dad. Los Feliz Dad. I go, girls, you listen to a song about me. A los feel is dead. Da da da. Edie da da. A los feel is dead.

• 2:31:26Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 2:31:29Dax Shepard?

I'm still in a sweet spot where they think I'm funny.

• 2:31:31Speaker 01

  That is great.

• 2:31:32Dax Shepard?

And my life, like when they're 15 and 17 and I sing a los feel is dead. And they're like, fuck this guy.

• 2:31:39Speaker 01

  They'll laugh.

• 2:31:40Dax Shepard?

  I hope so.

• 2:31:41Speaker 01

  They'll laugh. You're funny.

• 2:31:42Dax Shepard?

If that all happens, I'll just, and they go, what the fuck is this guy doing? I'll just walk down into the basement. And I'll just stay there until my life's over.

• 2:31:52Speaker 01

  No.

• 2:31:53Dax Shepard?

I'll stand in the middle of the basement. What happened?

• 2:31:59Speaker 01

  Listen, kids.

• 2:32:06Dax Shepard?

What? I can be like, what now? What the fuck am I?

• 2:32:12Speaker 01

Listen, kids, can you do, can you prepare yourself a little bit that kids do grow up and?

• 2:32:19Dax Shepard?

  And I'm not cool anymore?

• 2:32:20Speaker 01

Eye roll a little bit, but la, it's loving.

• 2:32:23Dax Shepard?

I think it's a great motivation for me to stay sharp.

• 2:32:27Speaker 01

  Okay, great.

• 2:32:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I think it might prevent me from going down the road that many comedians do, which is like, they just get less funny.

• 2:32:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:32:34Dax Shepard?

But I'm gonna be working my ass off.

• 2:32:35Speaker 01

You wanna stick with the tie.

• 2:32:36Dax Shepard?

Well, I gotta keep these girls laughing. That's my priority.

• 2:32:39Speaker 01

Well, that means you can't be doing comedy from 2024 in 10 years. You gotta be like, that's not funny anymore to these people.

• 2:32:49Dax Shepard?

  That's right. I'll do that.

• 2:32:51Speaker 01

Okay, you said impermeable border about the house. And you didn't know if you said it right. Impermeable means not allowing fluid to pass through. Not liable to be affected by pain or distress. Okay, does your right hemisphere control your left hand? Yes. Are cluster headaches due to damage to the hypothalamus? Yes, it's related. Are migraines worse for girls? Yes. Hemorrhagic migraines, are they still called that? Hemorrh- hemorrhagic? Yes. She knew a lot.

• 2:33:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:33:26Speaker 01

She made a little misstep with that science thing.

• 2:33:29Dax Shepard?

  What science thing?

• 2:33:30Speaker 01

  Vassar first.

• 2:33:31Dax Shepard?

Oh, sure. That's, but we can forgive that.

• 2:33:33Speaker 01

  For the most part.

• 2:33:34Dax Shepard?

  They probably told her that.

• 2:33:35Speaker 01

  I'm sure.

• 2:33:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:33:36Speaker 01

I'm sure they did. That's on them.

• 2:33:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I blame them.

• 2:33:40Speaker 01

They were the first women's college to lie about being the first to offer science.

• 2:33:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's a distinction.

• 2:33:48Speaker 01

Yeah, big time. So that was her and it was really just very, she's, she really is a blessing.

• 2:33:55Dax Shepard?

She is. You can believe in the word blessing without believing in God.

• 2:34:00Speaker 01

I know. I just, I, I worry that people who truly believe in like blessings coming down from God,

• 2:34:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:34:07Speaker 01

that they might think it's a joke.

• 2:34:11Dax Shepard?

  It's not.

• 2:34:11Speaker 01

  And it's not.

• 2:34:13Dax Shepard?

No, I'm sincere about it. And I think they would be fine with it so long as they agreed it was a blessing. If I say the Big Mac's a blessing, although I think it is.

• 2:34:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:34:24Dax Shepard?

Look at it, man. It arrived in the 50s and it's still here.

• 2:34:27Speaker 01

  I know.

• 2:34:27Dax Shepard?

It's a blessing. So if you're mad about that.

• 2:34:30Speaker 01

  Send us an email.

• 2:34:32Dax Shepard?

  Send Monica an email.

• 2:34:33Speaker 01

All right. And I'm just gonna end on reminding everyone that it was a dream.

• 2:34:37Dax Shepard?

  That's a big, big dream.

• 2:34:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:34:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:34:39Speaker 01

  Um, and that's that.

• 2:34:40Dax Shepard?

  And it's, it's a, it's a warm apple pie.

• 2:34:49Speaker 01

All right. Love you. Okay, okay.

• 2:34:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:34:52Speaker 01

  My God.

• 2:34:53Dax Shepard?

  Good night.

• 2:34:53Speaker 01

  I love you.

• 2:34:53Dax Shepard?

  Love you.
