  Pretty little episode.

• 2:25Mae Martin?

Welcome to the handsome pod. This is a pretty little episode.

• 2:30Tig Notaro?

  Yes, it is.

• 2:31Mae Martin?

Your cool host, Mae Martin. Joined by.

• 2:36Tig Notaro?

I am not able to keep up with this level of cool, but my name is Tig Notaro. Wow. Go to YouTube. Very cool. Look, May.

• 2:47Mae Martin?

  Thank you.

• 2:48Tig Notaro?

  Where did you get these?

• 2:49Mae Martin?

Well, my friend Joe is staying in this room right now. I don't know if you can see, I pulled out the sofa into bed there. And these must be his sunglasses I just saw and they, um, they're stunning. I think you'll agree.

• 3:01Tig Notaro?

And why is he staying in that room on that couch?

• 3:04Mae Martin?

He's, we're writing a new show. We're writing, he wrote feel good with me and we're, we're writing a new show and he's here for two weeks. And every time he flies all the way from England and every time I'm like, dude, I am all yours. While you're here, we are going to get stuff done. And then he arrives and I'm like, can we do an escape room? Or I'm like, I gotta go to this, to go to the sauna or something.

• 3:25Tig Notaro?

  Sure, sure.

• 3:26Mae Martin?

He's really patient with me, but man, he's a good, he's a good boy.

• 3:30Tig Notaro?

So you guys are writing a new series together?

• 3:33Mae Martin?

We are. Yeah. I'm really pumped. I think it's, he's so fun to write with. It's just so rare to find someone who's like, totally aligned and you know, we don't have any ego with each other. We're pretty blunt and it's just trying to make each other laugh.

• 3:48Tig Notaro?

And so is this something where, this is not a follow-up to wayward. This is, you guys are just gonna, are you coming up with a script or a pitch?

• 3:56Mae Martin?

We're developing it with someone and we're, we've been, we, we gotta write two scripts and like a whole series bible. And then I guess at that point they'll tell us if they're gonna make it or not, but I hope they will, cause.

• 4:07Tig Notaro?

They'll make it. You're the number one star in the universe.

• 4:11Mae Martin?

You're only as good as your last thing, you know, if they're like, what is this trash?

• 4:16Tig Notaro?

Well, if you're only as good as your last thing, then you're really good.

• 4:21Mae Martin?

I'm just pumped that this is a real like joke heavy comedy. I really, I miss being silly like that.

• 4:29Tig Notaro?

How about slip on a banana type stuff or like step on a rake and it comes up hit you in the face?

• 4:36Mae Martin?

Yes, please give me all that. I want like your pants accidentally fall down.

• 4:41Tig Notaro?

You know who could write for you? My son Max.

• 4:44Mae Martin?

Oh my God, is he into that kind of pure slapstick?

• 4:48Tig Notaro?

  Yes, indeed. Yes.

• 4:49Mae Martin?

I, you know what I watched on a plane the other day for the first time? Freaky Friday, the original. Seen it?

• 4:56Tig Notaro?

What year? Who was that with?

• 4:59Mae Martin?

  Lindsay Lohan, Jamie Lee Curtis.

• 5:01Tig Notaro?

  I didn't see it.

• 5:02Mae Martin?

And they, they're a mom and daughter and they switch bodies and they just did a sequel, but I watched the original and I was like, I don't know if I was like high from the altitude, but I was cry laughing by myself on the plane.

• 5:15Tig Notaro?

No, I think Stephanie's told me it's a really good movie.

• 5:18Mae Martin?

  It's really funny.

• 5:19Tig Notaro?

  It's really good.

• 5:20Mae Martin?

They're both just Jamie Lee Curtis is because they swap bodies is playing a teenager, basically. And then Lindsay Lohan's playing her mom and they're just both great. So funny.

• 5:30Speaker 04

There's also a 1976 version with Jodie Foster.

• 5:34Mae Martin?

  No.

• 5:35Tig Notaro?

I know, I was gonna say.

• 5:36Speaker 04

He might have seen that one.

• 5:37Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I was gonna say, I, I think I saw, I didn't know that was Jodie Foster in there.

• 5:43Mae Martin?

Does she say like, mom, this fraud is pretty freaky or something like, is that a good Jodie Foster? Nah.

• 5:50Tig Notaro?

Jodie came to, um, uh, come see me in the good light screening.

• 5:54Mae Martin?

  No way.

• 5:55Tig Notaro?

  Oh yeah, she was there.

• 5:56Mae Martin?

  That's, do you know her?

• 5:58Tig Notaro?

I mean, just, I don't know her well. I know her through, um, I've known her wife forever.

• 6:05Mae Martin?

  Okay, yeah.

• 6:05Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, Alex.

• 6:07Mae Martin?

We gotta get Jodie to ask a question.

• 6:09Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I, I wonder if she would. She doesn't strike me as somebody that.

• 6:14Mae Martin?

She's like, I have all the answers. I don't need to ask any questions.

• 6:18Tig Notaro?

Oh yeah, I, I, I mean, who knows? Maybe she'd be like, yeah, I'll do your circus of a show, but, um.

• 6:25Mae Martin?

  She's so cool.

• 6:27Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, really nice person.

• 6:29Mae Martin?

You've seen the Sons of the Lambs?

• 6:31Tig Notaro?

  I haven't.

• 6:32Mae Martin?

  Really?

• 6:33Tig Notaro?

  I mean, I promise I haven't.

• 6:35Mae Martin?

I believe you. I just always think about this one scene where she shows up at Buffalo Bill's house and she has no idea that he's the killer and he invites her in and the girl's in the basement and she has no idea and just slowly in the kitchen, standing, talking. Jodie Foster and Buffalo Bill, like she realizes it's him, he realizes that she knows it's him and it's like the tensest scene and then it all explodes, it goes crazy.

• 7:03Tig Notaro?

So it make you a little nervous, I guess?

• 7:05Mae Martin?

It's making me nervous now, talking about it.

• 7:10Tig Notaro?

I remember my first girlfriend went and saw that movie and she came over, I don't know who I was house-sitting for, but she came over to stay with me for the weekend and she had just seen the movie and she was freaked out.

• 7:26Mae Martin?

  Oh, God.

• 7:27Tig Notaro?

And I had no idea what the movie was about or anything and I just remember the whole night being like, "Here come the lambs, here come the lambs."

• 7:40Tig Notaro?

And I was like, "Careful, there's a lamb behind the door."

• 7:42Mae Martin?

Oh, my God, I wish it was about lambs. How are you, Tig?

• 7:47Tig Notaro?

Oh, thank you for asking me. I'm doing well.

• 7:51Mae Martin?

I know you're in Toronto and behind you framed, is that like art of an old bill? Like of Canadian money?

• 7:59Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, ten, ten, $10.

• 8:02Mae Martin?

That brings back, that's like what money was like when I was a kid and then they turned it all into these weird plastic bills, like plasticky bills. Oh, man.

• 8:11Tig Notaro?

Those are terrible. I'm sorry, Canada. I don't like your plasticky bills.

• 8:15Mae Martin?

  No.

• 8:16Tig Notaro?

I understand they're not, you can't rip them and all that kind of stuff, but like...

• 8:21Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 8:22Tig Notaro?

  Oh, well.

• 8:23Mae Martin?

I know. I got some change the other day, a bunch of $1 bills here and then someone had written like Annabelle on one of the bills and I thought, how come, that seems like something I would love to do, write little messages on all the money and then because it gets circulated out back into the world.

• 8:43Tig Notaro?

  They didn't write Anna Bill?

• 8:45Mae Martin?

Oh my lord. That's why they pay you the big bucks.

• 8:50Tig Notaro?

I have done it again. Speaking of writing on bills. I did a show the other night. With a magician.

• 9:00Mae Martin?

  No.

• 9:00Tig Notaro?

Okay, you don't want to hear the story?

• 9:02Mae Martin?

I love magic and was this magician fucking amazing?

• 9:05Tig Notaro?

  May? May.

• 9:08Mae Martin?

  I'm delighted.

• 9:10Tig Notaro?

Okay, so Stephanie and I are sitting backstage at my show.

• 9:13Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 9:14Tig Notaro?

And it's this charity event, there's a magician and of course it's like, it's a real crap shoot with a magician.

• 9:22Mae Martin?

  You never know.

• 9:25Tig Notaro?

He's like, okay. I'm gonna hand, he's sitting on one side of the table, we're sitting on the other. He said, I'm gonna hand you, um, or no, he said, pick a, you know, classic, pick a card, any card.

• 9:36Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 9:37Tig Notaro?

I pick a card. He said, okay, here is a, a marker, a permanent marker. Sign your name on the card. And I was like, alright. And he said, now, this is insane.

• 9:49Mae Martin?

  Oh my god.

• 9:50Tig Notaro?

Put it back in the stack.

• 9:53Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 9:54Tig Notaro?

I was like, great, he shuffles it. He's like, alright, um, now, that wallet that's sitting in the middle of the table?

• 10:02Mae Martin?

  No.

• 10:03Tig Notaro?

I was like, yeah, and he said, you haven't touched it, neither of you have touched it, right? And I was like, right, like, I didn't even notice the, I, I saw it, but I didn't pay any attention to it. He's like, and I didn't touch it, right? And I was like, right. He's like, okay, you want to open it? So I open it, it has two snaps on it. And behind, you know where you put your license in a, um, where there's a plastic cover? You put your license in there? My card was in there, signed.

• 10:34Mae Martin?

  No.

• 10:35Tig Notaro?

Yes, yes. I was like, I am so sick and tired of your bullshit. I need you to step away from me, sir.

• 10:44Mae Martin?

  Oh my god.

• 10:46Tig Notaro?

I could not believe. And then he told Stephanie to pick a card, which she did.

• 10:54Mae Martin?

  Uh huh.

• 10:54Tig Notaro?

He said, um, what was your card? And she was like, you know, um, a diamond, an eight of diamonds or whatever. And he was like, are you more partial to the diamond or the eight?

• 11:07Mae Martin?

  Interesting.

• 11:09Tig Notaro?

And she was like, uh, the diamond. And he was like, okay. And then he goes, and then she said, no, the eight.

• 11:17Tig Notaro?

I want you both, May and Thomas, to look at me when I tell you this.

• 11:23Tig Notaro?

We were sitting on the other side of the table from him. And he said, look at your hand.

• 11:31Mae Martin?

  Her physical hand?

• 11:32Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 11:33Mae Martin?

I have goosebumps right now. You can't, if you could see.

• 11:35Tig Notaro?

There was with that permanent marker and eight written on the inside of her hand.

• 11:42Mae Martin?

  What?

• 11:43Tig Notaro?

I, it was all of this all night long.

• 11:48Mae Martin?

  Oh my.

• 11:49Tig Notaro?

That's why I kept yelling at him. You, I am sick and tired of your bullshit.

• 11:53Mae Martin?

  Oh my god.

• 11:54Tig Notaro?

May, your brain would ooze out of your ears. This man, this man.

• 11:59Mae Martin?

But also the fact that Stephanie pivoted, she went diamond, actually eight. Oh my fucking god. Also, okay, because the card thing, I'm like, did he know your signature? And he'd put it there before, but how would he know what card you chose? This is too powerful and dangerous.

• 12:18Tig Notaro?

Exactly my point. He needs to be arrested.

• 12:20Mae Martin?

  Yeah, holy shit.

• 12:22Tig Notaro?

One of the best magicians I've ever seen in my life.

• 12:25Mae Martin?

You gotta give me the name and I'm gonna, I'm gonna look this guy up.

• 12:29Tig Notaro?

  Magic Mike. No.

• 12:33Mae Martin?

Imagine how powerful you'd feel, but also the pressure if you get it slightly wrong in front of all those people. Oh, wow. Well, I can't believe, like, you just telling me about it felt, I felt like I was being astonished by magic.

• 12:50Tig Notaro?

He's, he's mind blowing. I think I'm gonna have him do one of my Largo shows.

• 12:54Mae Martin?

  Yeah, you have to.

• 12:55Tig Notaro?

Well, should we get in, uh, into our questions? See what people have to?

• 13:00Mae Martin?

What would you do if it was from the magician?

• 13:03Tig Notaro?

I wouldn't doubt it. I would not doubt it if I walked into my closet or bedroom here in Toronto and then he's there.

• 13:10Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 13:16Tig Notaro?

Well, hit us, Thomas. Who do we got?

• 13:18Speaker 05

Hi, handsome. This is Clara from Brazil. And this is a question for today. When May is around, because it involves games. So the game I want to propose is that you tell your life story in one minute. So you gotta time yourselves one minute and you tell your life story.

• 13:49Mae Martin?

Wow. Okay, I like it. Should we do it?

• 13:52Tig Notaro?

  Um, sure. You go first.

• 13:55Mae Martin?

Okay. You got a timer, Thomas? You tell me when. Oh, my God.

• 14:01Tig Notaro?

And maybe do a countdown five for with your fingers when, when it's getting to the end and then we'll have to cram in the end.

• 14:09Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 14:09Speaker 04

Okay, I'll put it on screen so you can see it and it'll, it'll go off.

• 14:14Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 14:15Speaker 04

Yeah. So tell me when you're ready, May.

• 14:18Mae Martin?

Okay, I'm ready. Now? Okay. Uh, 1987, I was born. My name is Mae Martin. I was born to Wendy and James in Scarborough General Hospital. I was so premature and then I grew up a very needy child, but confused. And then I went to school, dropped out of school, got, loved doing drugs, then kicked out of my house, then moved to England. I had, got engaged once, then also got engaged a second time, but. Then also generally happy doing comedy. Well, never had any dogs that I owned.

• 14:47Mae Martin?

Happening. I got tattoos, allergic to coconut. Um, did a podcast called Handsome. Wait, I'm done. And I got 25 seconds left. Uh, I go into, she had some massage school, got a diploma that was back in the day. And then, um, now I am living in the house and my friends are around and, uh, there were moments in life that were hard overall. Things always work out for the best. And I believe in the, in mother nature to see me through. Wow.

• 15:18Tig Notaro?

What a life. What a life.

• 15:21Mae Martin?

That was really depressing. That I, I only needed 40 seconds and then I was struggling to fill the last 20.

• 15:30Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, that's good though.

• 15:32Mae Martin?

Think about all the moments in between that I've lost. I just-

• 15:35Tig Notaro?

Nothing happened in between those moments. That was it. You've lived 40 seconds.

• 15:41Mae Martin?

Oh, man. God, our little personal stories. Do you want to do yours, Tig?

• 15:48Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 15:49Mae Martin?

  Thank you.

• 15:49Tig Notaro?

  I'll do mine.

• 15:50Mae Martin?

  Great.

• 15:50Speaker 04

All right. One, two, three, go.

• 15:54Tig Notaro?

Uh, on March 24th, 1971, Matt Teal O'Callaghan Notaro was born. Uh, did I say Jackson, Mississippi? Uh, that's where I was born. And then my parents split up and I moved with my mother and my brother down to Paschusham, Mississippi, uh, where we lived, uh, until my mother and stepfather met and got married and moved us to Texas, where I wet my pants and still way too long and had a greasy bowl haircut. It was still popular though, very well liked. I was smoking the whole time and sitting in trees and what have you, and skateboarding around the neighborhood. We had 12 cats and a dog and, um, I failed every grade I ever touched.

• 16:37Tig Notaro?

We lived in Miss, in New Jersey for a couple of years. I dropped out of high school, moved to Colorado.

• 16:43Mae Martin?

  10 seconds left.

• 16:44Tig Notaro?

Life of my own out there. Met my first girlfriend, came out of the closet. And then moved to Los Angeles with my childhood friends and got into stand-up, met Stephanie and had Max and Finn.

• 16:55Mae Martin?

  Whoa, see, that was good.

• 16:59Tig Notaro?

  Also, I had cancer.

• 17:01Mae Martin?

Yeah, yeah, we missed, we missed some big chunks.

• 17:05Tig Notaro?

Yeah, read my book. It's called, uh, Just a Person. That was fun. Thank you so much, Clara.

• 17:12Mae Martin?

  Yeah, thank you.

• 17:12Tig Notaro?

No answer from her, from Brazil, right?

• 17:15Mae Martin?

Yeah, but I would like to hear her minute-long life story. That would be good.

• 17:20Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Why didn't she give that to us?

• 17:22Mae Martin?

That's a good game, though. That's like, when you meet people for the first time, that's a good game to play.

• 17:27Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, that's really good.

• 17:28Mae Martin?

Yeah. Um, yeah, what else? Who else have we got?

• 17:33Tig Notaro?

  What else and who else?

• 17:34Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 17:34Tig Notaro?

  Next up.

• 17:35Speaker 06

Hey, handsome, stuff from Vermont. I'm curious about traditions. They could be holiday-related or anything your families have traditionally done that maybe they hope to hand down through future generations.

• 17:46Tig Notaro?

  Ah.

• 17:47Mae Martin?

I'm big on traditions, and then my mom's always trying to scramble them up and do something different and, um, which I also admire as a quality, but I really like your classic Christmas meal. And my mom's often like, this year, we're having elk sausages and bok choy. And you're like, oh, okay.

• 18:07Mae Martin?

But one tradition is we play poker and, uh, and drink wine. That's always really fun.

• 18:13Tig Notaro?

  All four of you?

• 18:14Mae Martin?

Yeah, yeah. And then there's always the, the tradition that my dad has of if you see the new moon through glass, then you have to go outside with a coin in your hand, bow to the moon three times, say, "Good evening, lady moon," and turn the coin over in your hand.

• 18:29Tig Notaro?

Now, that is a very, um, I don't know, um...

• 18:34Mae Martin?

  Pagan?

• 18:35Tig Notaro?

No, I was, it reminds me of Ozzy Osbourne's song, "Bark at the Moon."

• 18:40Mae Martin?

  Oh, yeah.

• 18:41Tig Notaro?

You said, um, "Bow to the moon."

• 18:43Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 18:44Tig Notaro?

Do you know "Bark at the Moon," Ozzy's song?

• 18:47Mae Martin?

I know that phrase, but no, I don't know.

• 18:49Tig Notaro?

It's just funny to think of him singing, "Bow to the moon."

• 18:55Tig Notaro?

And like with his crazy Ozzy, bow to the moon.

• 19:00Mae Martin?

Yeah, a lot of that comes, my grandma had a lot of strange traditions and superstitions and stuff that my dad has passed on. What about you?

• 19:10Tig Notaro?

We have a lot of traditions and Max and Finn love traditions.

• 19:15Mae Martin?

Yeah, I think it makes, it helps the world make sense to kids.

• 19:18Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and it just creates comfort and safety feelings and there's so many, Finn is so sentimental. And there's so many times that he's like, I'm gonna do this with my kids. And when I'm a dad,

• 19:33Mae Martin?

  He is a dad already.

• 19:35Tig Notaro?

  Huh?

• 19:35Mae Martin?

He has such dad energy already.

• 19:39Tig Notaro?

I can't think of specific things that, I mean, I know I've talked about this before, but like on Christmas Eve, we have vegan gumbo and then we have it for the days following. And I've mentioned that Nana comes in town and we have our little tree trimming party with her, where we get the tree ready and put on some tunes and have our oat nog and what have you.

• 20:06Mae Martin?

Yeah, it's just little, like your tig bits are almost traditions. It's like little turns of phrase that you say as a family, you know what I mean? Like, in my family, if you ever say like, I, I used to say, I'm gonna go, I'm gonna go outside and my dad would say, who's Ina? Or like, if I said Shirley not, he'd say, don't call me Shirley.

• 20:28Tig Notaro?

Oh, yes, yes. Did you ever see the airplane movie?

• 20:31Mae Martin?

  Yes, yes, so good, yeah.

I'm forgetting her name, who is so funny from the airplane movies. And I saw her at the airport. And I, I was in a movie with her, but before I was in a movie with her, I was like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm seeing her at the airport. But of course, oh, Julie Haggerty.

• 20:54Tig Notaro?

That's her name. Before I was in that movie, I was thinking, oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm seeing her at an airport. And then I thought, but gosh, anytime she's at an airport, people can't believe they're seeing her at an airport. Yeah. And she also feels like she could play Maria Bamford's mother. Oh, really? Okay, yeah. I know exactly the type then. Yes, yes. But yeah, I think, I think we have just traditions, you know, even just little things, like after Max and Finn's practices, you know, basketball, baseball, they like to go to this place called Burger Lounge that has a really good vegan burger. Yeah. And, and that's just kind of a little thing that we do.

• 21:39Tig Notaro?

Yeah, nice. Should we hear Steph's answer? Let's do it.

Given the timing, I will share a holiday one. Around the time that I was born, we were renovating my old family farmhouse when my grandmother came upon a lump of coal. Without telling anyone, she wrapped it along with a bunch of other like gag gifts, and she distributed all of them to everyone on Christmas Eve at the family dinner. She set out all these rules about how many swaps you could do before you open your mystery gift, but then whoever ultimately unwrapped the coal had to do the job the following year. Tig, when I hear you talk about your mom, I often hear the spirit of my grandmother in your stories. Thank you so much for your joyful contributions to our world. Our family's navigating some challenging stuff right now, and your episodes lift me up twice a week, something I'm really grateful for.
