• 2:32Amy Poehler?

Where are we talking to you from?

• 2:35Speaker 01

I'm home. I'm home and I'm in the hallway.

• 2:38Amy Poehler?

  Okay, perfect.

• 2:41Amy Poehler?

It's really good to see you and I know you're doing press for-

• 2:43Speaker 01

I love your podcast, by the way. I've been listening to it. It's so good.

• 2:47Amy Poehler?

Thanks, Margaret. Today is a very special day because we have really our most requested guest coming on today. Like, it's, you know, people have really, really wanted to hear from and hear me and Aubrey talk about a lot of things and I'm just so psyched she's here.

• 3:08Speaker 01

She might be the most unanimously loved person ever. Like-

• 3:13Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 3:14Speaker 01

Even like, my dad's really not like, you know, he like barely has a phone. He doesn't have a TV. But like, when I, when he found out I was doing a movie with Aubrey, he was like, "Aww, I fucking love her." Like, "Man, she's so funny." Like, he's so, he was so excited. Like, she, he reached my dad-

• 3:38Amy Poehler?

  She's got the dads.

• 3:40Speaker 01

She, but she's got everybody. Like, I just, I just love her. I just think she's the best.

• 3:47Amy Poehler?

You know, it's so funny you say that too because I was thinking, she's also, kids really like Aubrey because she acts like a cat, right? So like, dogs come and greet you at the door, but cats just kind of chill and wait for you to come to them. And kids really like that. She never, you know, my, I remember my boys on the set of Parks and she would just like walk by and say something to them, like on the way past them and they'd be like, "Who was that?"

• 4:14Speaker 01

I'd also imagine that she'd like talk to a kid like an adult.

• 4:17Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 4:18Speaker 01

  You know?

• 4:18Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 4:19Speaker 01

Like, just meet them where they are. Like, it's rough out there, right?

• 4:23Amy Poehler?

Totally. Yeah, yeah. She's really, as the people like to say, she's, she appeals to four quadrants. And you guys have worked together, is this the, is Honey Don't, which is the film that you're, you both are in, that you're the star of, Congratulations, coming out very soon. It looks so great. And, and is this the first time you've worked together, the two of you?

• 4:43Speaker 01

Yeah, we met on set. I was, I've been such a big fan of hers for such a long time. And I think Parks and Rec was probably my intro to her, which is just like one of the best shows of all time. You guys together are so special. But I've, I've like felt like I, I think she has that quality where you feel like you know her even when you don't. So like, I already loved her so much even before meeting her. And I would have been so bummed if she didn't like me.

• 5:17Amy Poehler?

I'm projecting on this on you, so I don't, tell me if I get, I'm getting it wrong. But you both, to me, seem like, you know, in some ways, introverted artists in an extroverted business. Like, do you, do you relate to that?

• 5:32Speaker 01

Definitely. Yeah. I mean, it's like, you know, the classic case of a, oh, look at me, don't look at me.

• 5:44Amy Poehler?

Yeah, right. Everybody pay attention. Like, what are you looking at?

• 5:47Speaker 01

I want to show you something. Stop! What, what? Go home, be alone.

• 5:55Amy Poehler?

So what was it like working together on set? For, for, for those that don't know, you guys are, what is your dynamic in the film? And then what was it like working together?

• 6:03Speaker 01

Dynamic in the film is I play this like suave detective and she plays this like cool cop. And we kind of hit it off right away and it kind of feels like we've like met our match. Like, I usually, as a character, feel like I'm in the power seat. And when I come across Aubrey's character, that's really challenged. And I think she actually is in the power seat.

• 6:32Speaker 01

And on set, it's, it's a really fun set. It's Ethan Coen and Trisha Cook's movie and they're just great and like.

• 6:43Speaker 01

They're at once, you know, super accomplished and uh, like these like great artists, but really don't take themselves seriously. So it's like a, it's a silly, laid back, goofy, fun vibe there. Um, but, you know, Aubrey, I think, I think in order for somebody to come across, there's like, uh, there's a lot to be so effortless, take some effort, you know, and she's like, she's, she cares, like in the best way. She's thoughtful and considerate and um, brought so much depth to her character and

• 7:27Speaker 01

it was, you know, just like kind of consistently surprising everyone with just, um, you know, her, her, the, her, the thing that she does, um.

• 7:38Amy Poehler?

I think you bring up a really good point, which is,

• 7:42Amy Poehler?

you know, she's, she started out anyway, especially on Parks and Rec, playing like a very disaffected character, but the secret to that character and Aubrey is that she cares very deeply.

• 7:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:55Amy Poehler?

And, um, I think people like project on her that she's, uh, indifferent. And she's definitely not.

• 8:04Speaker 01

  No, no.

• 8:05Amy Poehler?

I was wondering if you had a question you thought I should ask Aubrey on this day that you'd be curious to know about, or, or like you want any topic you think we should cover.

• 8:16Speaker 01

I don't know why the first thing that came into my mind was the Salem witch trials, but.

• 8:22Amy Poehler?

Was she, was she in them? Is that the question?

• 8:25Speaker 01

  Probably, you know?

• 8:29Amy Poehler?

Oh yeah. What was it like being in the Salem witch trials?

• 8:36Amy Poehler?

Margaret, we love you. I would love to get you in the stewed. Anytime. Okay. I'd be lucky. Aw, buddy. And, and I, you know, I know Plaza would, will be so happy that you did this and surprised and happy that you did it. And also, I know that you and many people in her life have been real big supports and a real circle of love during very tough times. So, on behalf of her, I'm gonna say thank you. And it's so good to talk to you. The easiest to love. Thank you for having me. Great to see you, cutie pie.

• 9:44Amy Poehler?

Aubrey Plaza's here and she has her sunglasses on. And... I'll take them off if you want. Well, I do because they... Damn it. I know, but...

• 9:54Amy Poehler?

I'll put them on again, let me see. I mean, they look very cool. Frankie, what are you doing? That's so creepy.

• 10:01Amy Poehler?

Plaza's here and her sweet dog Frankie is here, too. When you wear the glasses, you do look very Howard Stern. It's because my hair, too. Yeah. Right now, it's like...

• 10:13Amy Poehler?

I mean, it makes you look cool, but as an interviewer, I don't love it. Oh, God. Sorry.

• 10:22Amy Poehler?

Your doggy Frankie is here with you, too. Yes. Tell us about Frankie. Okay. Have we started? Yeah, we started. Oh.

• 10:30Speaker 02

  And just like that.

• 10:34Speaker 02

Frankie is my dog. Her name is Frances.

• 10:37Amy Poehler?

  Right.

• 10:38Speaker 02

Fox. She's named after Judy Garland. That's Judy Garland's real name.

• 10:43Amy Poehler?

  She's a good dog.

• 10:44Speaker 02

She's a good dog. She got a little sick this morning. That's why I brought her. I'm not, I'm not, I'm not like a bring my dog to work kind of person.

• 10:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 10:53Speaker 02

  So much, but.

• 10:54Amy Poehler?

Do you ever bring her on set for anything? Do you?

• 10:56Speaker 02

  No.

• 10:56Amy Poehler?

But she's really like with you a lot.

• 10:59Speaker 02

She is now, yeah. That's, this is a recent, recent, this year, recent kind of thing.

• 11:03Amy Poehler?

Yeah, she's like, she's like, she's like a therapy dog.

• 11:07Speaker 02

  Oh, yes.

• 11:08Amy Poehler?

In many ways. And it has always been for you, but it's really been, yeah.

• 11:11Speaker 02

She is. She's always been like that.

• 11:13Amy Poehler?

Well, I mean, to just to get it out of the way, people want to see you. I want to see how you are. They love you. I know. They love you and they want to see you. So you've had this terrible, terrible, tragic year.

• 11:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:28Amy Poehler?

You've lost your husband. You've been dealing with that and you've been looking for all different ways in which to feel and find support. And I think I would, on behalf of all the people who feel like they know you and the people who do know you, how are you feeling today?

• 11:46Speaker 02

I'm, I mean, right in this very, very

• 11:51Speaker 02

present moment, I feel happy to be with you. I feel overall, I'm here and I'm functioning and I feel, you know, like I feel really grateful to be moving through the world. I think like I'm okay. But, you know, it's like a

• 12:18Speaker 02

a daily struggle, obviously. This is like a really dumb analogy, but, and it was kind of a joke at a certain point, but like I actually mean it. Did you see that movie, The Gorge?

• 12:28Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 12:29Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 12:30Amy Poehler?

  Horror movie?

• 12:30Speaker 02

It's like a alien movie or something with like Miles.

• 12:36Amy Poehler?

  Teller?

• 12:36Speaker 02

Teller. And, um, but it's like, in the movie, there, there's like a cliff on one side, and then there's like a cliff on the other side, and then there's like gorge in between, and it's like filled with all these like monster people that are trying to get them. And like, I swear, when I watched it, I was like, that is like, feels like what my grief is like. Where it's like, or what grief could be like. Where it's like, at all times, there's like a giant, like, ocean of just awfulness. That's like right there, and I can like see it. And like, sometimes I, I just wanna like, just dive into it and just like be in it. And then, and then sometimes I just like look at it, and then sometimes I'm like, I just try to get away from it.

• 13:19Speaker 02

But it's always there. It's just always there. And the monster people are trying to get me like Miles Teller.

• 13:26Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, and, and, uh...

• 13:27Speaker 02

  And Anya Taylor-Joy.

• 13:30Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Who, Anya Taylor-Joy, to me, is the, is, is example of like, the more beautiful you are, the more spaced out your eyes are.

• 13:41Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:42Amy Poehler?

And Rihanna, um, who, and that's how she says it, guys.

• 13:47Speaker 02

  What?

• 13:47Amy Poehler?

  Rihanna. Yeah.

• 13:48Speaker 02

  No.

• 13:49Amy Poehler?

  Yes. Check out the clips.

• 13:51Speaker 02

  Not saying it ever.

• 13:52Amy Poehler?

Well, Rihanna has, is so beautiful, and her eyes are truly on the side of her head.

• 13:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, just like a horse.

• 13:59Amy Poehler?

  And yes, and Anya...

• 14:01Speaker 02

That's why horses are so beautiful.

• 14:03Amy Poehler?

Well, I feel, here's how I feel about horses. I feel like horses are fine.

• 14:07Speaker 02

  You hate them.

• 14:08Amy Poehler?

  I don't hate them. I don't hate them.

• 14:10Speaker 02

  Let's talk about animals.

• 14:11Amy Poehler?

I would love to talk about animals.

• 14:13Speaker 02

  No.

• 14:14Amy Poehler?

No? Because I feel, I feel like I, I, I, I think horses are beautiful, and they're a little bit scary to me, and I'm like, I respect them, but I, I'm not, I don't really wanna be near them.

• 14:26Speaker 02

And that's not how you feel about Rihanna?

• 14:28Amy Poehler?

No, I'd love to truly like be in a stall with Rihanna and feed her a sugar cube, if she let me. I wanna talk to you about many things today.

• 14:38Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 14:38Amy Poehler?

Okay. Um, but the first person I wanna talk to is little baby Plaza.

• 14:45Speaker 02

  No.

• 14:46Amy Poehler?

  Why?

• 14:47Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 14:50Amy Poehler?

No, I don't need you to act like a baby.

• 14:52Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 14:53Amy Poehler?

I just mean, I wanna talk. We're gonna do role play. We're gonna do real intense role play.

• 14:58Speaker 02

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 14:58Amy Poehler?

I'm gonna have a bunch of hats.

• 14:59Speaker 02

  No. Okay.

• 15:02Amy Poehler?

No, but because I love little young Plaza, and I feel like a lot of people don't. I think a lot of people are like little young Plaza out there, and they see themselves in you. But can you explain what kind of kid you were?

• 15:15Speaker 02

Oh, okay. Hmm. I was, I mean, I think before, I would say like before seven, I think I was like pretty shy. Like I was kind of like a quiet, like lanky, kind of, I don't know, freakish kind of kid, maybe. Um, really thin hair. Like my ponytail was like, looked like this. Just like one little strand, basically. I would try to have ponytails, but.

• 15:47Amy Poehler?

Your hair looks really good right now.

• 15:49Speaker 02

  It's got thicker.

• 15:50Amy Poehler?

You don't have any pieces in?

• 15:51Speaker 02

  No.

• 15:52Amy Poehler?

  Shit.

• 15:53Speaker 02

It gets thicker as I get older.

• 15:54Amy Poehler?

  It's gotten really thick.

• 15:54Speaker 02

  Tina Fey, watch out, bitch.

• 15:56Amy Poehler?

  Watch out, bitch.

• 15:57Speaker 02

Um, watch out, I'm coming for you.

• 15:59Amy Poehler?

She's gonna brush that hair, like a real brush.

• 16:02Speaker 02

I'm coming for you, Tina Fey.

• 16:02Amy Poehler?

  Nobody's gonna beat Tina's hair.

• 16:04Speaker 02

  Um.

• 16:04Amy Poehler?

  Nobody.

• 16:05Speaker 02

  Watch me.

• 16:06Amy Poehler?

  Sorry, babe.

• 16:07Speaker 02

  Watch me.

• 16:07Amy Poehler?

My money's on Tina. I've seen that hair. It's incredible.

• 16:10Speaker 02

Watch me. I was definitely around a lot of people, like hectic kind of, you know, childhood, I think. So like, I was a very, I was like definitely an observer, but like definitely living in my imagination. Like I could just imagine things all day long.

• 16:28Amy Poehler?

  Where did you grow up?

• 16:29Speaker 02

Um, grew up in Delaware, Wilmington, Delaware. Um, yeah. Ever heard of it?

• 16:35Amy Poehler?

Nope. Never been, never heard of it.

• 16:37Speaker 02

Joe Biden, the land of Joe Biden.

• 16:39Amy Poehler?

  Joe Biden, who we met.

• 16:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:41Amy Poehler?

Who we met, well, you've met many times.

• 16:43Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 16:43Amy Poehler?

But you know, for people, fast forward to when we were in parks, we got to go when President Biden was in, Vice President Biden, we got to go to a scene with him.

• 16:52Speaker 02

  I'll never forget it.

• 16:53Amy Poehler?

And it was pretty, pretty exciting.

• 16:54Speaker 02

  It was amazing.

• 16:55Amy Poehler?

It was amazing. It was super, super fun. And I've told this story before, but Aubrey stole something from his desk.

• 17:01Speaker 02

Yeah. I did. I still, there was, we were getting a tour of his office and of the White House, right?

• 17:08Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:09Speaker 02

And I saw a little, like, vice president monogrammed notebook, piece of paper that said, like, Aubrey Plaza, and then like, three facts about me, like Wilmington, Delaware, Ursula Academy. We met, we met, blah, blah, blah, because that's what the politicians all do, they get their little.

• 17:25Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 17:25Speaker 02

And then you're like, oh, my god, how did he remember?

• 17:27Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 17:28Speaker 02

You know? Um, and I swiped it, and Mike Schur was like, you cannot steal something, do you think? And I was like, oh, shut up, Mike. And he was like, we're literally in the White House. And I was like, we are?

• 17:41Amy Poehler?

We're in the White House. And you didn't get in trouble, you, no one ever knew.

• 17:45Speaker 02

  No.

• 17:46Amy Poehler?

  No one knew.

• 17:47Speaker 02

  No one knew.

• 17:47Amy Poehler?

I am kind of surprised that there's no, like, alarm system in there.

• 17:51Speaker 02

There's nothing in there, it's like a house of.

• 17:53Amy Poehler?

It is, it is weird how janky the White House actually is.

• 17:56Speaker 02

  It's janky as fuck.

• 17:57Amy Poehler?

  It is janky as fuck.

• 17:58Speaker 02

  I didn't see any cameras.

• 17:59Amy Poehler?

And it is like, it's like SNL, like, you go in there, you're like, this is the White House?

• 18:03Speaker 02

  I know.

• 18:03Amy Poehler?

  Like, this place sucks.

• 18:05Speaker 02

  You're like, that pillow's disgusting. It's like.

• 18:08Amy Poehler?

It's like a hotel room used by, for a million years.

• 18:11Speaker 02

  I know.

• 18:12Amy Poehler?

  It is bad.

• 18:13Speaker 02

  It's weird.

• 18:14Amy Poehler?

But, you know, now it's gonna be big and beautiful, it's gonna be gorgeous now. Um, okay, so then you're in Delaware, what kind of shows did you do as a little kid? Like, what were your, like, parts that you were, that you got to sink into?

• 18:26Speaker 02

Baby Plaza Theater was the Wilmington Drama League. I went there, my older cousin was doing The Crucible. And I remember just watching and being like, oh, my god, this is so cool. And then I auditioned, I think the first thing, oh, yeah, the first thing I got was Hansel and Gretel.

• 18:45Amy Poehler?

  You played?

• 18:47Speaker 02

  Chorus, Tree.

• 18:48Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 18:49Speaker 02

  Tree number four, maybe.

• 18:50Amy Poehler?

No small part, no small trees.

• 18:51Speaker 02

Yeah, actually, yeah, I was, um, actually, um, fun fact, I got my period, uh.

• 18:57Amy Poehler?

  Nice.

• 18:58Speaker 02

On stage at the Drama League.

• 18:59Amy Poehler?

You used that, you just used it.

• 19:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 19:02Amy Poehler?

You were like, I'm gonna use this.

• 19:03Speaker 02

I ble, I went, I started bleeding, and then my cousin took me in the bathroom, I was like, what's happening? And she was like, I'm bleeding. And then I was like, get on out there. The show must go on. And then I did.

• 19:13Amy Poehler?

And you were like, and you felt totally different. You were like, my tree is a woman now.

• 19:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 19:18Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:20Speaker 02

  It was awesome.

• 19:21Amy Poehler?

  That's exciting.

• 19:22Speaker 02

I was mainly in the chorus a lot.

• 19:24Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:24Speaker 02

I always wanted to be, you know, like Annie or whatever, but I know, but the bigger, the big part that I got that like kind of changed things for me was, I got the ugly stepsister in Cinderella.

• 19:35Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 19:36Speaker 02

And I really wanted to be Cinderella, like all, everybody.

• 19:39Amy Poehler?

  And then?

• 19:39Speaker 02

And then they were like, ugly stepsister. And I was like, damn it.

• 19:42Amy Poehler?

Because I know that's the better part.

• 19:44Speaker 02

  It was the better part.

• 19:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 19:45Speaker 02

And it taught me, like, I brought down the house with my song and it taught me, like, comedy is where it's at. I was like, I'm getting all the laughs.

• 19:52Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 19:53Speaker 02

  I was like, Cinderella sucks.

• 19:54Amy Poehler?

I bet you have the same memory that I have is like when you get your first laugh that you mean to get, like, people laugh at you, but when you get a laugh that you mean to get, it's like becoming a vampire.

• 20:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:06Amy Poehler?

  Like, you're like,

• 20:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:08Amy Poehler?

  You're like, I'm fully realized.

• 20:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:10Amy Poehler?

  I have all the power.

• 20:10Speaker 02

Yeah. I can do anything. It's the best feeling.

• 20:13Amy Poehler?

Yeah. Okay, then you graduate. You go to NYU.

• 20:16Speaker 02

Then I graduated. Then I went to NYU.

• 20:18Amy Poehler?

So do you remember, like, arriving in New York City and what that was like?

• 20:24Speaker 02

It was crazy, yeah. I was like, I mean, I was so ready to go to New York, mainly because of UCB.

• 20:32Amy Poehler?

Which is, people listening, is a sketch, an improv theater that myself and Matt Besser, Ian Roberts, Matt Walsh started in 90, we moved to the city in 96.

• 20:43Speaker 02

  96.

• 20:44Amy Poehler?

  Arriving when?

• 20:45Speaker 02

I came to the city in 2002. But like, growing up, I, I knew about UCB before, you know, I went to New York and like,

• 20:56Amy Poehler?

How did you know about it? Just curious, like,

• 20:58Speaker 02

Neil Casey. I mean, we, Neil was one of my best friends growing up, is still one of my best friends. He was a bit older than me and he was really into comedy. He showed me like Mr. Show and Kids in the Hall and like, we got really into, and obviously Saturday Night Live was like really big for me. Growing up too, so like, we just, yeah, we were like super big comedy nerds and part of the reason I wanted to go to NYU and go to New York is to take classes at UCB. So that was like, I was like ready.

• 21:25Amy Poehler?

And you were like studying and then taking classes at the same time? You were doing both?

• 21:30Speaker 02

Yeah, I started doing it like immediately.

• 21:32Amy Poehler?

What were you majoring in at NYU? I don't think I know.

• 21:34Speaker 02

I majored in film, um, like directing and writing.

• 21:38Amy Poehler?

More than almost anyone I know, love studying, watching and talking about movies. You love movies.

• 21:43Speaker 02

I love movies. All I need is movies. I don't need anything else or anyone else.

• 21:48Amy Poehler?

But movies, um, what do you do with your phone when you're watching a movie? Are you able to fully, you are, you're really good.

• 21:54Speaker 02

I am, and I'm not just saying that. I think I am. I'm also really not good at technology. I'm like, I'm a real boomer like person when it comes to that.

• 22:03Amy Poehler?

Although I will say, when it comes to technology, I have a memory that you, you've taught me many lessons, but I remember one time I was texting on the set of Parks to someone who was bothering me or like asking something from me. I forget what the situation was, and I was like composing this really long text and you grabbed my phone and you just typed no. And you sent it to them.

• 22:27Speaker 02

Really? You don't remember that? No, I don't remember anything.

• 22:29Amy Poehler?

And it was, um, it was very illuminating, because it was just basically like, it really, underneath it was like, first of all, don't be like beholden to your phone, like, life is happening around you. And also you don't owe anybody any long explanation.

• 22:45Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 22:46Amy Poehler?

  I know.

• 22:46Speaker 02

  That's so.

• 22:46Amy Poehler?

  You don't remember that?

• 22:47Speaker 02

No, I feel like that's something you would do to me. I feel like you taught me how to say no.

• 22:51Amy Poehler?

Well, maybe I taught it and then forgot it, and then you did it back to me.

• 22:54Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 22:55Amy Poehler?

  Like, like Karate Kid style.

• 22:58Amy Poehler?

Um, okay, so then you go to New York. Where do you live when you're in the dorms?

• 23:03Speaker 02

I go to New York. My parents dropped me off on, um, Third Avenue and, um, Eleventh Street.

• 23:09Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God, I used to live right around there, near Webster Hall.

• 23:12Speaker 02

Yeah, I lived right on, I lived in the Third North dorms. And then I ended up moving, I got out of the dorms earlier than you're like technically allowed to because there was like a mice issue.

• 23:23Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 23:24Speaker 02

  And so.

• 23:25Amy Poehler?

There were too many mice in the, and they were like, you have to leave? Like the mice took over?

• 23:29Speaker 02

The mice took over to the point where I will never forget, I was on the top bunk.

• 23:34Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 23:34Speaker 02

And I was being very quiet because I was like reading a book or something and like nobody else was in.

• 23:40Amy Poehler?

You were as quiet as a mouse.

• 23:41Speaker 02

I was as quiet as a mouse. Um, and I literally was just like reading for like, I don't know, maybe 20 minutes or something. And all of a sudden, there was a Thanksgiving Day parade of mice. They were like having trumpets, they'd be like, and they all just started parading back and forth, like selling things and it was like a flea market. They came out and they were like, it was insane, like I was like, ah, and I was like, I couldn't.

• 24:08Amy Poehler?

  On your floor?

• 24:09Speaker 02

  On the ground.

• 24:09Amy Poehler?

  Oh, Lord.

• 24:10Speaker 02

Like in our clothes, like in our, it was like a messy room too. So it was like, they were just like, like they had like, were wearing my clothes. They were like running around dancing, like they were just.

• 24:20Amy Poehler?

They were like those Richard Scary books, remember those things where it was like, like they were like building, they were like in little cars, driving a hot dog car.

• 24:27Speaker 02

Yes, it was insane. And I was like screaming, I was like, this is fucking disgusting.

• 24:32Amy Poehler?

And NYU was like, you gotta get out.

• 24:34Speaker 02

Yeah. They were like, be quiet and get out. So I got out and then I moved, and then I moved right down the block to Second and 11th. I got in with these like older musical theater girls that like took me in. And then I lived there for a couple of years.

• 24:51Amy Poehler?

And then you studied at UCB?

• 24:52Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 24:53Amy Poehler?

And then a lot of people don't know that you, well, I mean, I think some people know because you talked about it on SNL, but then you found, you got an internship at SNL.

• 25:01Speaker 02

  Oh, yes.

• 25:02Amy Poehler?

  How did you get that?

• 25:03Speaker 02

I, so I faxed my resume. Remember that?

• 25:10Amy Poehler?

  That's amazing.

• 25:10Speaker 02

  Where are you looking?

• 25:11Amy Poehler?

  I don't know.

• 25:12Speaker 02

  At the audience?

• 25:13Amy Poehler?

I'm just looking over here, I'm looking at my fax.

• 25:15Speaker 02

I imagined like that there were people there.

• 25:18Amy Poehler?

I'm looking, I'm checking to see if I got any other faxes.

• 25:21Speaker 02

  Hello?

• 25:24Speaker 02

Yeah, I faxed my resume to every department. Um, because there was, there was just like a number, there was like a pa- paper on some wall at NYU that had like all the department numbers. It was like 212-667, blah, blah, blah. 212, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Like, or 664, whatever. It was 66.

• 25:46Amy Poehler?

  Remember 212?

• 25:47Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:48Amy Poehler?

  I still have a 212 number.

• 25:49Speaker 02

I'm so jealous. I wish I could have that.

• 25:51Amy Poehler?

  I still have a landline.

• 25:52Speaker 02

  That's nice.

• 25:52Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 25:53Speaker 02

But yeah, I faxed my resume to every department, um, and I didn't get anything. And then on a Friday night, on the week of their, of the 2005 season, um, I got a call from the design department and they were like, "We got your resume, like, we need someone, like, can you come interview?" And it was Regina DeChico, if you remember Regina.

• 26:17Amy Poehler?

  Sure, of course.

• 26:18Speaker 02

And I was like, um, yeah, I was like, "I'm available." It was like Friday at like, I want to say like 4:00 PM or 5:00 PM or something. She was like, she was like, "How about right now?" And I was like, "Okay." And so then I like went up to 30 Rock, like immediately saw Ben Affleck.

• 26:36Amy Poehler?

  Sure, just there.

• 26:37Speaker 02

Who was like, I guess he was hosting, he was hosting that episode. And I just like, um, remember how crazy it was just walking in for the first time? Because I was just interviewing. So I was like, I didn't know what was going on, but it was a Friday night, so I guess they were rehe- blocking or whatever, rehearsing. Um, and they had, they had fired, the design department only ever had one intern, couldn't cut it, mainly because he wanted to be in design.

• 27:01Amy Poehler?

  Ah.

• 27:02Speaker 02

  And, um.

• 27:02Amy Poehler?

And they were like, "You, you, yeah, you can't."

• 27:05Speaker 02

No. He was like, "So, the blueprints of the, the..." And they were like...

• 27:09Amy Poehler?

And they were like, "Get the fuck out of here."

• 27:10Speaker 02

Literally. They were like, "Fuck off." And he was like, "Nah." Um, and then I came in and they were like, "Do you care about design?" And I was like, "No." And they were like, "Can you start now?" And I was like, "Yeah."

• 27:22Amy Poehler?

What is the design part of SNL for people that don't know? Like, what is design, what does the design do? Because it's a big, it's a very important part of the show.

• 27:30Speaker 02

  There's...

• 27:32Speaker 02

You have to imagine the sets have to be built somehow.

• 27:34Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:35Speaker 02

  And very fast.

• 27:36Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:37Speaker 02

Um, because basically, as you know, on Tuesday nights, the writing night, and then Wednesday night is when all the sketches get chosen.

• 27:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 27:45Speaker 02

And so there's really only Wednesday to Saturday, and then they have to like figure out all the sets in between. I remember what I had to do was like, once the, I was there all Wednesday night, like until three in the morning or whatever. And then, then once the sketches were picked, I would, they would like send, they would be like, go in the filing ca- literally in the fi- filing cabinet and find restaurant number seventy-two or something.

• 28:08Amy Poehler?

  Wow.

• 28:08Speaker 02

And then I would like sift through and find these like, um, blueprints, I guess, for whatever. And then I would just watch them and they would like draw stuff and, and that's it. And then the, the other job I had was to take continuity photos. And that was cool, because you guys would be rehearsing. And I'd be like, and everyone thought I worked there.

• 28:26Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:26Speaker 02

I had a camera around, whatever, and I just was like very quiet and just kind of like taking pictures of, of the sets, of the plants, of the things.

• 28:34Amy Poehler?

I mean, it blows my mind, Plaza, that we were sharing, I mean.

• 28:37Speaker 02

  You were there.

• 28:38Amy Poehler?

  I, like.

• 28:39Speaker 02

  I stalked you.

• 28:39Amy Poehler?

I, I, I think now about the people that are crossing our lives right now, that are like in our proximity that we don't know yet, that it's.

• 28:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:46Amy Poehler?

Like, it, it's really cool that we were in the same physical space.

• 28:50Speaker 02

  I know.

• 28:50Amy Poehler?

  We didn't know each other.

• 28:51Speaker 02

It's so crazy. It still blows my mind.

• 28:53Amy Poehler?

And then you were giving tours and.

• 28:54Speaker 02

  I was giving tours, yeah.

• 28:55Amy Poehler?

And a lot of people know that you just gave, you just made stuff up while you gave tours.

• 29:00Speaker 02

Yeah, I got fired, man. I didn't get fired, but I got pretty much encouraged to leave. Pretty quickly.

• 29:07Amy Poehler?

Yeah. What were some things you would make up? Do you remember?

• 29:10Speaker 02

I mean, nah, I don't know, like, specific thing. I feel like there was one thing, um, this is when I was a page, I'd, like, there was one speech I had to give about, like. I guess it was like, uh, Conan's studio or something. That's that studio and it was like very cold and it was a there were just like weird facts where they'd be like, does anyone, you know, know why it's so cold in the studio? And people would be like, why is it so cold? Cause of the lights? And I'd be like, no, because in 1956, they had penguins on the show and the penguins needed to be cold so they wouldn't die. And they forgot to turn the heat down after that.

• 29:51Speaker 02

So it's been cold since like 1956 and people would be like, well, that's interesting.

• 29:56Amy Poehler?

Okay, then you get your, your, your, like, doing comedy, doing shows. And we meet, not on SNL, even though we're in the same building, but we meet on the set of Parks and Rec. And for people that don't know, like, you had a crazy week when you got hired.

• 30:15Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 30:15Amy Poehler?

You got like three jobs that same week. What happened that week you were hired on Parks?

• 30:20Speaker 02

So I, basically, I was like trying to get a part in Funny People, the Judd Apatow movie with Seth Rogen and Adam Sandler. And I went through kind of this whole vetting process in New York. And then enough where Alison Jones, who cast that movie and Parks and Rec, was, called me and was like, alright, like, you made it to the chemistry read stage. So you have to come out to LA and read with Seth and see if you get the part, basically. Um, and so, but I didn't really have an agent or anything. And I kind of had to like pay my way, you know, to go out there. So it was like a little bit janky, but I got myself out there, um, to do that.

• 31:02Speaker 02

And then while I was out in LA for that week to do the Funny People thing, Alison was like, how would I send you on some other things? Like, how do you feel about that? And so, yeah, so one of them was She wanted me to go meet Mike Schur and Greg Daniels, who at the time were shooting on The Office. And they were shooting, they were on the set of The Office. So she sent me to the set of The Office. And I didn't even, I guess at that time I didn't realize like, I didn't think like, oh, I could, these meetings

• 31:34Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 31:34Speaker 02

  will get me a job.

• 31:35Amy Poehler?

I mean, I think it's one of the things about being young that's kind of nice is you're not really aware what you're actually, like what's at stake.

• 31:42Speaker 02

  No.

• 31:43Amy Poehler?

  And that's good.

• 31:44Speaker 02

Definitely not that. I mean, if it was an audition, obviously, I know like, alright, I'm gonna get the part or not. But like, general meetings, I didn't really get the vibe of that.

• 31:51Amy Poehler?

  How old were you then?

• 31:52Speaker 02

I was 24, 23, 23 maybe. But so then I went to the set of The Office and I was so starstruck. I see in my horse eye BJ Novak and Mindy Kaling walk by and I was like, oh my god, I was like, they're in the show. Or whatever. And Mike Schur is like, hello.

• 32:14Speaker 02

And he's like at his desk like, and I'm like, what? And then I just met him for like, he describes it, he really embellishes this story, I think.

• 32:25Amy Poehler?

  He loves this story.

• 32:26Speaker 02

He loves it, but he's like, and then I met the weirdest person.

• 32:29Amy Poehler?

There's no bigger fan of Aubrey Plaza than Mike Schur.

• 32:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, right.

• 32:34Amy Poehler?

He loves it though. Because I think like, I mean, it just speaks to honestly the fact that

• 32:41Amy Poehler?

you've always been yourself, confidently yourself. And you don't have a vibe of like, you don't, you are the opposite of a pick me, as the kids would say. Like, you do not have that vibe. And that draws people in. And I think he was like, who is this person?

• 32:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:58Amy Poehler?

Who seems mad at me while I try to give her a job?

• 33:01Speaker 02

Yeah, literally. And why are you wearing jean shorts in a general meeting? Like ripped jean shorts.

• 33:07Amy Poehler?

And you're like, I didn't know what this was.

• 33:08Speaker 02

No. And then I got a phone call. And they were like, you're on a TV show. I'm like, what? No. But then.

• 33:17Amy Poehler?

You're like, which one? What, you're like, The Office?

• 33:19Speaker 02

Yeah. I literally probably said that. I didn't know what was going on. And then they were like, actually, you got the part, but actually, you have to audition to play yourself.

• 33:31Amy Poehler?

You don't have to name names, but I wonder who else was up to play you?

• 33:34Speaker 02

  I don't think that anyone.

• 33:35Amy Poehler?

Oh, right. It was just one person.

• 33:37Speaker 02

I think they just made me do it like for the network or something. I think I found out later. I mean, maybe not. I don't know. It's probably like, you know. It was you, Sharon Stone and Gina Gershon.

• 33:47Amy Poehler?

Yeah, so you get the part, we're on the set and then like, I mean, we could do a whole, obviously, we could do a whole episode about our experiences there. And there are so, like, I mean, I don't, the best thing about our relationship, I feel like is, I don't like, like, a lot of, I think, long-lasting relationships is you don't always like, remember how you met, like, I just remember like, just, I just have this vision of you being next to me on the set of that show and me being like, welcome, like, you know, Leslie was supposed to be like welcoming April and April was supposed to be like, what am I doing here? And Amy was welcoming Aubrey and Aubrey was like, what am I doing here?

• 34:33Speaker 02

Truly, yeah. I mean, I, I remember when we first met and it, I think I told you this story. It was the promos that we shot.

• 34:41Amy Poehler?

  That's right.

• 34:42Speaker 02

And, which was weird because we hadn't shot the show yet. And the rest of the cast hadn't even been cast yet. I think at that point, it was just like, Aziz, me, you, maybe another Rashida.

• 34:56Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I don't think we had Nick yet or...

• 34:58Speaker 02

I don't think so, but they had me and I was there, like physically there, so they shot this promo of us on a swing set and that's when I met you like officially for the first time. And I think I was literally on a swing, like a child, like, and I was like, and I was like, just don't make any sudden movements.

• 35:18Amy Poehler?

  Except swinging.

• 35:19Speaker 02

Except swinging. And then you, which is kind of good because swinging is really good somatically. For me, like, I liked, but then, yeah, you came over and we were both just swinging like little babies. That's how we met, on a swing. We met on a playground, which is kind of nice.

• 35:34Amy Poehler?

Really nice. And it feels like the show was that, like, it was, it felt like a true, like, playground space. It really was, like, we, I mean, I loved and love working with you. I love playing with you. I love acting with you. I love you as an actor. I love you as a person. I love your acting, Blasey. You know how good I think you are.

• 35:55Speaker 02

  I love playing with you.

• 35:57Amy Poehler?

And I feel like our dynamic, well, like, the arc of, of, in many ways, like, April had the biggest growth in the show. She goes from... Truly not wanting to be where she is till like, you know, ending the show like with some kind of purpose and a love in her life and like some, also like a she kind of stands up for what she doesn't want to do, which is a big part of your twenties like. But um, when you started that character, when you started her, did you have any idea where you thought it would go? And did you have any?

• 36:35Amy Poehler?

You know, did you, did you see?

• 36:37Speaker 02

  No.

• 36:37Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 36:37Speaker 02

No, I just, no, I think I just, once I realized like, oh, what's so fun about this character is that like, it's a game of not showing anyone that I really care.

• 36:52Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 36:53Speaker 02

And like, once I've locked into that, it was a real, like, it felt like there was no limit to like, the growth or like what could happen because if you hint that there's something else going on, it's like you can kind of play with that and also in different ways with every different character. So I feel like maybe on an unconscious level, but I felt like, oh, there's so much to play with, even though it feels really subtle and simple.

• 37:21Amy Poehler?

Yeah, that was her secret is she cared, but she pretended she didn't. And so when it would pop out, it was so satisfying.

• 37:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:28Amy Poehler?

It was so funny and good. And the ways in which she tried to keep those things hidden were so funny.

• 37:35Speaker 02

Yeah. And then I think just the Andy April thing was such an organic, like I had no idea that was gonna become a thing until that one episode.

• 37:45Amy Poehler?

So let's talk about that. So Andy, uh, played by Chris Pratt, um, and you, um, April and Andy had an episode where a bunch of us were off, like doing the, like a harvest, we're at the Harvest Festival. We're at some festival.

• 37:59Speaker 02

I don't know where you guys were.

• 38:00Amy Poehler?

  We were doing something together.

• 38:01Speaker 02

Yeah. Or you were like camping or something?

• 38:04Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah, maybe. Oh, yeah.

• 38:05Speaker 02

  We were like cabins?

• 38:06Amy Poehler?

Yeah. And so they put you guys in the office and just said like, let's see what happens to these two characters when they hang out.

• 38:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:12Amy Poehler?

And basically the chemistry that those characters had was the building block for why they eventually became like the, the real romantic love story of the show, other than Leslie and Anne.

• 38:23Speaker 02

  Yeah. Cause Anne doesn't deserve.

• 38:27Amy Poehler?

  Don't talk about Anne.

• 38:28Speaker 02

  Sorry.

• 38:31Amy Poehler?

But what do you remember of that day?

• 38:33Speaker 02

I have a bit, well Greg Daniels directed the episode, which I will always remember because he was so delighted, like he had such a like little kid energy and he was so, he just was like very willing to like, let's just try things and we had a whole day where we were just playing, it was like, kinda like what you said, like the off it, like the bull room or bullpen?

• 38:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah bullpen, yeah.

• 38:57Speaker 02

The bullpen, um, the bull room, the bullpen like became a playground and I, I just remember, I have an image of like us sitting under the table. We were like under that main table for a while, like I don't even know what we were doing down there. Um, but we were under there and I just remember, I don't know, it just felt, it was so fun. It just felt like, I remember before then, there was, I think it was like the finale of the, maybe the first season? I don't remember what season, but there was a very subtle moment where we're all in a group, we're in a circle and um, Andy's like saying something about his band or he's like,

• 39:38Speaker 02

something about like, I think like this band name is cool or whatever and everyone else is like, no, and April's, and I was just like, I like it. And it was like an improvised thing, but I, do you remember that where I, where I remember being like, and then I remember like got knocking on Mike Schur's like door and being like, listen, I was like, April loves Andy and April thinks Andy's cool because he's so not cool that he's cool. Do you understand? And Mike was like, get out of here! And I was like, you, I was like, you better listen to me. Um,

• 40:07Amy Poehler?

Wow, you did, you knocked on his door.

• 40:09Speaker 02

It was like, I mean, yeah, it was, it was more like, just a little conversation.

• 40:13Amy Poehler?

That was, it was like, it was like a layer to that character because you become his advocate, like, and that's the part of April that like, is like another interesting layer is like, again, she acts like nothing matters and she's, you know, completely disaffected, but she's actually very fiercely loyal.

• 40:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:30Amy Poehler?

And very, um, and like sticks up for people she believes in, which I think is a charact- character trait of you too, Plaza, like you're very, you're a very loyal friend.

• 40:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:41Amy Poehler?

You're a really, really protective friend. Um, and you really stick up for people who you love and that side of it was so great because then we got to see Her like manage him, care about the band, see potential for him that he didn't see in himself.

• 40:58Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 40:59Amy Poehler?

And he was just like, I can't believe how lucky I am.

• 41:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:04Amy Poehler?

And I remember when the writers had you guys get married, we were all like, what?

• 41:08Speaker 02

  I know. That was insane.

• 41:09Amy Poehler?

That was, what do you remember of that day, shooting it?

• 41:12Speaker 02

We, there was a lot of crying. You cried.

• 41:14Amy Poehler?

  I mean, I love a wedding.

• 41:17Speaker 02

You cried. I remember you like cried in the kitchen and then you were like crying like off camera. And I was like, stop.

• 41:23Amy Poehler?

  I didn't cry that much.

• 41:23Speaker 02

Yes, you did. You like literally cried all day. It was so weird.

• 41:27Amy Poehler?

I was so happy you were in love.

• 41:29Speaker 02

You were like crying all day. There was like, I was like-

• 41:31Amy Poehler?

I was not crying all day.

• 41:33Speaker 02

I was like, we're not even, the camera, I was like, we're in my trailer. Like, why are you doing this? And you were like, how do you feel? I'm like-

• 41:39Amy Poehler?

Oh, my God. No, I didn't.

• 41:40Speaker 02

I'm ordering a salad for lunch. Like, this is my job.

• 41:42Amy Poehler?

I was crying because you were crying so hard and I was worried that we weren't gonna get the shot. I was crying because I was sad at how much you were crying.

• 41:49Speaker 02

I don't think so. I think that you thought it was real and-

• 41:53Amy Poehler?

Yeah, I assumed it was legally binding. Yeah. But it was so good and the vows were so funny.

• 42:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:02Amy Poehler?

And the wedding was so stupid.

• 42:03Speaker 02

  It was so stupid.

• 44:33Speaker 02

  Nope.

  Shut up.

• 44:42Amy Poehler?

  Okay, okay.

• 44:44Speaker 02

You've never wa- The big giant screen that you watch your movies on.

• 44:49Speaker 02

  How does it work?

• 44:50Amy Poehler?

  Go bloop, bloop, bloop.

• 44:51Speaker 02

  These days, I wouldn't.

• 44:52Amy Poehler?

  And go to, go to-

• 44:54Speaker 02

  Go to what?

• 44:54Amy Poehler?

Type in where the search is.

• 44:56Speaker 02

  Where? How? Someone tell me.

• 44:58Amy Poehler?

  Peacock.

• 44:59Speaker 02

  No.

• 45:00Amy Poehler?

Yes, yes. Go there, or go to iTunes.

• 45:04Speaker 02

  I wish I knew how.

• 45:06Amy Poehler?

Um, or go to, you know, um, uh-

• 45:11Speaker 02

  With what?

• 45:12Amy Poehler?

Just pick up your controller and just save parts and wreck into it. And it'll come up.

• 45:17Speaker 02

Okay, it's probably not the right one.

Go to your DVDs. You love your DVDs.

• 45:21Speaker 02

I wish, I had one right now.

• 45:22Amy Poehler?

Um, but so you've never re-watched it?

• 45:25Speaker 02

  No.

• 45:26Amy Poehler?

  I don't know what's wrong with you guys. I-

• 45:28Speaker 02

If it comes on in a hotel room, I literally throw something. I throw it.

• 45:33Amy Poehler?

  Adam says-

• 45:34Speaker 02

I will literally break the DVD.

• 45:35Amy Poehler?

Adam says watching the show makes him sad. Nick has told me he has not re-watched it.

• 45:40Speaker 02

Liar. He jerks off to it every night. You know he sits there and like touches himself.

• 45:49Amy Poehler?

You're so right. He's got it on right now. He's, "Rrrr, Nick, Nick."

• 45:55Speaker 02

  Tammy.

• 45:56Amy Poehler?

You're right. He does watch it for Tammy.

• 45:57Speaker 02

  His wife.

• 45:58Amy Poehler?

  His real wife, Megan Mullally.

• 45:59Speaker 02

They get off on that. They watch it together.

• 46:00Amy Poehler?

They watch. You're so right. They watch it together and they-

• 46:03Speaker 02

  They're sick. They're just sick.

• 46:04Amy Poehler?

And then they just slap each other in the face.

• 46:05Speaker 02

  They're disgusting.

• 46:06Amy Poehler?

They're totally disgusting. Nick, I know you're listening. You're not fooling anybody.

• 46:10Speaker 02

I remember like that episode with, with April and Ron, that very first-

• 46:16Amy Poehler?

  I love that episode.

• 46:17Speaker 02

Thing, when we got to play together. I remember like knocking on his door and being like, "I canceled all your meetings today," or whatever.

• 46:23Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 46:23Speaker 02

And it was just the silence, the silences between us.

• 46:28Amy Poehler?

The thing that I love so much about Leslie and April's relationship is that Leslie had a plan for April that, and she kept kind of whispering to April.

• 46:39Amy Poehler?

You know, like 2016, a version of like feminism, like you can do it all, you can do whatever you want.

• 46:47Speaker 02

And she was like, "Women belong in the kitchen." That, that game I loved to play, the trad wife thing. She was always like-

• 46:53Amy Poehler?

So good. I mean, maybe April would be a trad wife.

• 46:55Speaker 02

She was like, "We must respect our man." And Leslie Knope would be like, "No, April, no." And she'd be like, "You must bend over for your man."

• 47:04Amy Poehler?

I feel like you, did you improvise that? It feels like something you would have improvised. Two more things about Parks. What, we had so many fun guest stars come in and like, you connected with some of them in interesting ways.

• 47:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:20Amy Poehler?

Who do you remember just like, love, like just being like, oh, I just like, loving the, because I, I feel like my job on set was to be like, welcome, you know, and you got to just, come up later and be like, what do you think of this?

• 47:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:34Amy Poehler?

  You definitely.

• 47:35Speaker 02

I'd be like, it's kind of crazy around here. Want to see something insane?

• 47:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:42Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you were the cool, you were the cool kids.

• 47:44Speaker 02

I mean, one of the ones I'll never forget is Patricia Clarkson.

• 47:47Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 47:47Speaker 02

Totally made out with her, never made it on, on the show.

• 47:51Amy Poehler?

We should clarify, made out on the set, not in the trailers.

• 47:55Speaker 02

  Oh, sure.

• 47:56Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 47:56Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 47:57Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 47:57Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 47:58Amy Poehler?

Although Patty would probably be fine with both. That was incredible and April really fell for Tammy one.

• 48:03Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, she was Tammy one.

• 48:06Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:06Speaker 02

  Yeah, sure.

• 48:07Amy Poehler?

I mean, one could argue that Ron's mom was the original Tammy.

• 48:11Speaker 02

  Oh, right, right, right.

• 48:12Amy Poehler?

Played by Paula Pell, but yeah.

• 48:13Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, that was a good one.

• 48:14Amy Poehler?

Yeah, Tammy, but she was Tammy one and Malali was Tammy two. Who else did you love?

• 48:19Speaker 02

I loved her, um, fuck, my brain is so broken. I remember Sam Elliott.

• 48:23Amy Poehler?

  I'll throw some people out.

• 48:24Speaker 02

You love Sam Elliott. Sam Elliott always pops up. I love Sam Elliott.

• 48:28Amy Poehler?

You love the actor that played Orin on Parks and Rec?

• 48:30Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, Orin.

• 48:31Amy Poehler?

  Remember Orin?

• 48:31Speaker 02

I loved Orin. Love Orin. He was so funny and so weird.

• 48:36Amy Poehler?

  He was so funny.

• 48:37Speaker 02

He was like a, um, like a vampire boy.

• 48:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 48:40Speaker 02

That was always like lurking in the shadows.

• 48:42Amy Poehler?

  Eric Eisenhower.

• 48:43Speaker 02

  Eric.

• 48:44Amy Poehler?

Played Orin and, but Eric wasn't really the vampire boy, I think in, in real life, but he.

• 48:50Speaker 02

No, but in character, but he was very like, method.

• 48:53Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 48:53Speaker 02

And I really appreciated that. Like even when we weren't shooting, he'd be kind of like, did you try the hummus? Or whatever. And I'd be like, yes, Warren. I, you know.

• 49:03Amy Poehler?

  Yes.

• 49:03Speaker 02

  Whatever. Um, who else?

• 49:06Amy Poehler?

You also, uh, helped us, you helped us secure the mayor, Connie. You really helped us get Bill Murray on the show.

• 49:13Speaker 02

Bill Murray. All you have to say to Bill Murray is, you're playing a cadaver. And he's like, I'm in.

• 49:22Speaker 02

Do you remember when, I don't know if you remember this, but do you remember when Chris Bosch was on the show, the basketball player? Chris Bosch? He was a Miami Heat player.

• 49:32Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yes.

• 49:33Speaker 02

  And he was a-

• 49:34Amy Poehler?

  Was he in like-

• 49:34Speaker 02

Remember we had like, had like, different B- basketball, like Roy, um-

• 49:38Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, we had Roy-

• 49:39Speaker 02

  Hibbert and-

• 49:39Amy Poehler?

  Yes. Yeah, Chris Bosch, yes.

• 49:41Speaker 02

  But Chris Bosch-

• 49:42Amy Poehler?

And he was with like, Aziz and, um, was he like-

• 49:45Speaker 02

  John Ralphio?

• 49:45Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, Entertainment 720.

• 49:47Speaker 02

Yeah. But like, I don't know if you know this story, it was a very quick story, but it was so stupid, but I was a really big Chris Bosch fan, so like, I was like, oh my god, like, I can't believe he's coming, like, this is insane. I was like, I want to play a prank on him. Do you know this?

• 50:01Amy Poehler?

  No.

• 50:01Speaker 02

And so, he had to go through hair and makeup, but, you know, he, I think, had very little hair and, you know, whatever.

• 50:07Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:07Speaker 02

Didn't need makeup, because he's a guy or whatever. Um, but, you know how they always put them through the works anyway?

• 50:12Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 50:12Speaker 02

So I was like, I'm gonna pretend to be the hair stylist. And, I think, it was Terry maybe was in there?

• 50:20Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 50:20Speaker 02

And you know how she had those glasses?

• 50:22Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 50:22Speaker 02

Or whatever? So I was like, Terry, give me your glasses. Or, I can't remember, whatever. And I'm thinking like, this is gonna be hilarious, because it's gonna be me. And he'll be like, ha, ha, it's you. Um, so I like, pretend to be Terry, I'm like, at her station. And then he goes through like, makeup first, and they're like, you look good. You know, a little powder and you're good. And then he like, went, and he was like, yeah, yeah, thanks a lot. And then he sat down in my chair, and I was like, wow. And I looked at him, and I was like, what are we gonna do today? And I was like, doing like, a dumb thing, and he didn't make any eye contact with me, he was just looking down. And he was so sweet. But he didn't make eye contact, he was just like, yeah, whatever you think.

• 51:02Amy Poehler?

Oh, no, and you were like, oh.

• 51:04Speaker 02

And I was like, well, I think that you're looking pretty good, sir. And he'd be like, yeah, I'm so, I'm good, alright. And I'd be like, well, you're not that good. And then I was like, I just kept it going, and someone videotaped it.

• 51:19Amy Poehler?

  Oh my god.

• 51:20Speaker 02

And it was so awkward. Didn't recognize me at all, didn't know who I was, don't think he ever knew who I was.

• 51:25Amy Poehler?

  No, I mean-

• 51:26Speaker 02

  Not once.

• 51:26Amy Poehler?

Chris Bosch isn't gonna be watching the show before he comes and does it.

• 51:29Speaker 02

He didn't know who I was. He thought I was, uh-

• 51:32Amy Poehler?

He thought you were a hair person.

• 51:33Speaker 02

And like, the PAs are like, we really need him on set. I'm like, well, he's almost done in my department of hair. And then, basically, it just died.

• 51:43Amy Poehler?

  And he never, you never?

• 51:44Speaker 02

  Nope.

• 51:45Amy Poehler?

Well, Chris is probably listening, so now you know.

• 51:48Speaker 02

  Never not once.

• 51:48Amy Poehler?

Did you even work with him on set that day?

• 51:50Speaker 02

Nope. Never saw him again. Literally never saw him again. Ever in my life.

• 51:55Amy Poehler?

Oh my god. I mean, people should know, you're a big basketball fan.

• 51:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:58Amy Poehler?

  I mean, you're, you're, you're a big WNBA fan.

• 52:01Speaker 02

  Yeah, I love it.

• 52:03Amy Poehler?

You're a big Liberty fan, and many other teams.

• 52:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:06Amy Poehler?

What do you like about basketball? What do you like? You're, you're, you're good at basketball.

• 52:10Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 52:11Amy Poehler?

  Welcome.

• 52:11Speaker 02

Um, I grew up playing basketball. I, I just love the game. My sister and I, um, we just were a ball, ballin' kind of family. My dad was like, coaching our teams, and I went to an all-girls high school, um, in Delaware called Ursuline Academy, and we were really known for our basketball team. Like, first, we would, you know, be the best in the state. Elena Deladon went to my school, and she's like, one of the best WNBA players ever. So I just kind of grew up loving the sport. Um, and then, yeah, my sister Natalie really introduced me to the W.

• 52:46Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 52:46Speaker 02

And it was kind of before the kind of Caitlin Clark effect, as they call it.

• 52:51Amy Poehler?

  Sure.

• 52:52Speaker 02

She, well, we, but even before that, before that, we joined a women's basketball league in LA. And we, and there was a lot of Parks people, like Alison Becker, was, you know, a lot of comedians.

• 53:05Amy Poehler?

  Shonda Ma Way tweet.

• 53:06Speaker 02

Shonda Ma Way tweet, um, was on, was on one of the teams. And there was a whole movement, like, around that time, like, 10 years ago, in LA, where like, just women were playing basketball. And like, really playing.

• 53:20Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 53:20Speaker 02

Um, and it was so fun. And then, kind of after that, I tore my ACL, um, on the court.

• 53:28Amy Poehler?

  That's, I mean, I'm pretty baller-y.

• 53:30Speaker 02

Yeah. It's happened twice. Did it again last year.

• 53:32Amy Poehler?

  I know. It's, it's, it's very cool.

• 53:35Speaker 02

  Ah, thank you.

• 53:35Amy Poehler?

I know it's the biggest pain in the ass. Like, it's a nightmare to tear your ACL, but like, being iced on the court, it looks cool.

• 53:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:42Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 53:42Speaker 02

Well, the first time, it wasn't so cool, because I was actually playing in, I was wearing a wig, and I was playing in disguise. And truly-

• 53:51Amy Poehler?

You were pretending to be the hair department.

• 53:52Speaker 02

I was, yeah, I was pretending to be Terry.

• 53:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 53:55Speaker 02

  On the court.

• 53:56Amy Poehler?

Okay. So, we gotta talk about your other stuff. There's so much stuff that you've done. Like, I, you- I don't even, I don't even know where to start, Plaza. You're such a good actor. I, you've done, for people that perhaps don't know, you have done a million gazillion movies. You've been in White Lotus, you've done Emily the Criminal, one of my favorite performances of yours. You've done, you've worked with, um,

• 54:21Amy Poehler?

what's his name? You know, the most famous, um, you worked with Michael Caine.

• 54:25Speaker 02

  Robert De Niro.

• 54:26Amy Poehler?

Robert De Niro. You've worked with the other, Mike, Bobby De Niro. You've worked with the other guy, Coppola. You've worked, you've been in his movies.

• 54:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:34Amy Poehler?

  You've been in, um,

• 54:38Amy Poehler?

you've been in like Incredible, Incredible Black Bear. You've been in, I mean, I, I, I should note, your IMDB.

• 54:49Speaker 02

  It's enough.

• 54:50Amy Poehler?

  Is that enough?

• 54:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:51Amy Poehler?

It feels like it's not, it just scratched the surface, Plaz. So I guess my question to you is, and it is a genuine question, hold on. Agatha.

• 55:02Speaker 02

Down, down, down the road, down my witch's road.

• 55:07Amy Poehler?

  Road.

• 55:11Amy Poehler?

I mean, a lot of people think that you were playing yourself in Parks and Rec, but is it true that you're actually playing yourself in Agatha?

• 55:17Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 55:17Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 55:18Speaker 02

That was the closest, um, the most blurred the lines have ever gotten for me.

• 55:23Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 55:23Speaker 02

When I was holding the dagger in the woods.

• 55:26Amy Poehler?

I mean, that was so exciting to watch. I mean, that, that, that part was bananas.

• 55:32Speaker 02

  It was crazy.

• 55:32Amy Poehler?

And, um, the, the response to that show, talk about your hag heads. Talk about your parasocial.

• 55:40Speaker 02

I know, my baby hags love that shit.

• 55:41Amy Poehler?

  Baby hags, sorry.

• 55:43Speaker 02

  They're called baby hags, please.

• 55:45Amy Poehler?

Excuse me, baby hags. People, I mean, there's something about you that like is just witch

• 55:53Amy Poehler?

adjacent, like you're organically have a witch vibe, as you said. You were called that early on. Like, what is it about your fascinat-? You've written about the Christmas witch. You've played a witch. Christmas Witch is your great children's book. And it's a great book, by the way.

• 56:06Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 56:07Amy Poehler?

  You and Murph.

• 56:09Speaker 02

You know, we have a new book coming out?

• 56:10Amy Poehler?

  Ooh.

• 56:11Speaker 02

Um, that just came out, on the shelves right now.

• 56:13Amy Poehler?

  Oh, tell us about it.

• 56:14Speaker 02

It's called Luna and the Witch. Throw a Halloween party. It's a Halloween party.

• 56:18Amy Poehler?

Yes. What do you love about, what is it about that witch? Your, your, your production company is called Evil Hag.

• 56:24Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 56:25Amy Poehler?

What is it about witches? And you?

• 56:28Speaker 02

I, you know, it's like, I can't pinpoint exactly where that seeped in. But I will say, I grew, I think where I grew up has a, there's a witchy vibe.

• 56:43Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 56:43Speaker 02

In the woods of Delaware, first of all. It's an old state, the first state, in fact. Um, and so I think I kind of grew up kind of always, I don't know, feeling witchy in the woods. But also, I think that there's a blood, a bloodline thing happening, you know, in my family, with the women in my family, I think.

• 57:08Amy Poehler?

  Wait, say again.

• 57:09Speaker 02

Like, I think, I feel like I have ancestral, like witch, witches in my life, like.

• 57:16Amy Poehler?

Well, I mean, you really, your family feels like a matriarchy, like you have sisters, you have really strong women in your family.

• 57:23Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 57:24Amy Poehler?

And it feels like that's been, that feeling has been passed on.

• 57:28Speaker 02

  Definitely, on both sides too.

• 57:29Amy Poehler?

On both sides, right, on your dad's side too.

• 57:31Speaker 02

And I have like Basque blood.

• 57:33Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 57:34Speaker 02

And, um, and I found out about this years ago when I went, went to visit, I went to visit, like, the area where supposedly like some of my family's from.

• 57:42Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 57:43Speaker 02

And there's this town called Zugada Merdi, which is on the border of France and Spain, and northern Spain, in the Basque region.

• 57:51Amy Poehler?

  Mm-hmm.

• 57:51Speaker 02

And it's apparently where like, oh, thousands of witches would like convene in this, in these caves, which I went to visit. And, um, and like the, you know, we talk about Salem witch trials, like, that was like 200 witches. What, you love that shit, Boston?

• 58:10Amy Poehler?

  Well.

• 58:11Speaker 02

  What?

• 58:11Amy Poehler?

That was, it's funny that you bring up the Salem witch trials.

• 58:15Speaker 02

  Why?

• 58:15Amy Poehler?

Because we talked to Margaret Qualley today about you.

• 58:18Speaker 02

  You did?

• 58:18Amy Poehler?

  Yes, who is so nice.

• 58:20Speaker 02

  I know, I love her.

• 58:21Amy Poehler?

I know, and she loves you!

• 58:22Speaker 02

I know, we have a really sweet little connection there.

• 58:26Amy Poehler?

And we got to talk about, and you know, it's my favorite part of this in many ways, is to hear, is to talk well behind someone's back. And she was saying, which, you know, I know firsthand because of the love and support I feel from you and, um, our history together, but.

• 58:42Amy Poehler?

She was talking about how like, you are a real girl's girl. You are like, you know, you really support women. You love women. You take good care of them. You feel supported and loved by them. And you surround yourself with really strong, interesting women who, who, uh, who you learn from and, and teach to all the time. And, but she, her question was, what were the Salem witch trials like?

• 59:07Speaker 02

  What? Bitch.

• 59:11Speaker 02

  Honestly, they were fun.

• 59:13Amy Poehler?

  Alexis.

• 59:14Speaker 02

  They were fun, Alexis.

• 59:15Amy Poehler?

  Alexis, they were fun.

• 59:17Speaker 02

They were fun. They were hilarious. Like, everyone was freaking out. And I was just like, you guys are like so stupid, like.

• 59:23Amy Poehler?

But I definitely can see you back in the day being a, on.

• 59:27Speaker 02

  Ugh, I would love it.

• 59:28Amy Poehler?

What do you think that was the best part about playing a witch on Agatha?

• 59:31Speaker 02

The best part for me was just like cackling. Cause I, I had this one scene, like this one part at the end where like, and I don't even know why, but it was, I think cackling, there's something about cackling, I swear, that is like really therapeutic.

• 59:50Amy Poehler?

Well, it's probably somatic, like you've.

• 59:51Speaker 02

  It's somatic. It's like screaming.

• 59:53Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 59:54Speaker 02

But it's like, you, you think like, why are witches cackling? Where does that come from? I feel like it must be some old timey way that women were like working out their rage. And, cause I'm not very tapped into that, my rage and whatever. But like, when I really let loose and, and able to like cackle or whatever, like it, it's, I don't know, I just, it feels good for me. And I really took that and ran with it. And like the scene in Agatha where I'm like sitting, I'm like sitting on top of the house. And like, and I'm on a wire, cause I'm like flying down there. And she's down on the ground going like, ew, you know, ah, ah, and like screaming at me. And I was just like, ah, and I was cackling like crazy, but I went really crazy with it.

• 1:00:38Amy Poehler?

  And it felt good.

• 1:00:39Speaker 02

Felt good. It felt really good to just be like, just let loose.

• 1:00:44Amy Poehler?

Speaking of Margaret Qualley, movie Honey, Don't.

• 1:00:48Speaker 02

  Honey, Don't.

• 1:00:49Amy Poehler?

  You're in it with her.

• 1:00:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:51Amy Poehler?

And who directed it? And how did you? And how did you? Tell us about it.

• 1:00:55Speaker 02

Mr. Ethan Cohen directed it. Of the Cohen Brothers. And Ethan wrote it with his wife Trish. Trisha Cook. And how did I get involved in it?

• 1:01:09Amy Poehler?

Like, how do you pick? Why? I mean, I find your, the way you choose parts really interesting. How do you choose what you're gonna do next?

• 1:01:16Speaker 02

I mean, I think it's just, it's a, I mean, a lot of the things that I do, I feel like are somewhat self-generated. Because I've produced like five movies and, you know, I read scripts and, you know, I've done, I like that approach.

• 1:01:30Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you've developed things from the ground up.

• 1:01:32Speaker 02

Yeah, like, I mean, I did that really, that's what I've done a couple of times. But then, you know, as an actor, you also get offers sometimes.

• 1:01:40Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:40Speaker 02

You know? But I think people think a lot of times that like actors just like sit there and wait and are sifting through like 10 offers or whatever. But it's never like that. It's always kind of different than that. But this one, I don't know how I choose. I think a lot of it's kind of, has to do with like, what I feel like, kind of diving into energetically or like character-wise, because I tend to really like go there. And so I don't, there are certain things that I just, even if the script's like really good or if it's like, you gotta work with, you know, Glenn Powell or whatever. It's like, I don't.

• 1:02:20Amy Poehler?

But you gotta work with Glenn Powell.

• 1:02:21Speaker 02

  I know, but I don't, I don't want to.

• 1:02:23Amy Poehler?

  You gotta.

• 1:02:24Speaker 02

  I can't.

• 1:02:25Amy Poehler?

  You can.

• 1:02:25Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:02:26Amy Poehler?

  He's, he's, he's neighbors with Jack McBrayer.

• 1:02:30Speaker 02

All right, fine, I'll do it.

• 1:02:34Speaker 02

I'm definitely interested in like, doing the opposite of what I just did. Or like, you know, the honey don't thing, to me honestly, was like mind-blowing that a Cohen brother wanted to work with me. You know, I was like, oh my god.

• 1:02:47Amy Poehler?

Honey, everybody wants to work with you, honey.

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

Tarantino, where the fuck are you?

• 1:02:51Amy Poehler?

  Hello, Tarantino. Sorry, Quentin.

• 1:02:53Speaker 02

  Do your earmuffs.

• 1:02:54Amy Poehler?

  If you're listening.

• 1:02:54Speaker 02

Close your earmuffs. Tarantino, I'll do anything. I'll do anything, Tarantino.

• 1:02:59Amy Poehler?

  Absolutely, Tarantino.

• 1:03:00Speaker 02

  Anything you want.

• 1:03:01Amy Poehler?

Quentin, I am her manager, she will not do anything.

• 1:03:03Speaker 02

  Ring, ring.

• 1:03:04Amy Poehler?

And the feet are off the table, babe.

• 1:03:06Speaker 02

Tarantino, it's Aubrey. Guess what? I'll do anything you want, babe.

• 1:03:11Amy Poehler?

It's extra for the feet, honey.

• 1:03:12Speaker 02

  Naked in heels, Tarantino.

• 1:03:16Amy Poehler?

I'm gonna get an immediate call from Quentin Tarantino.

• 1:03:19Speaker 02

  Good, can't wait.

• 1:03:20Amy Poehler?

God, I can't wait for whatever is the scary ass shit he's gonna make me put me through again.

• 1:03:27Speaker 02

Don't care. You think I didn't care before? How about now? Definitely don't care about anything.

• 1:03:32Amy Poehler?

No, Quentin, no. We're gonna, okay, but so you.

• 1:03:35Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:03:36Amy Poehler?

But, but this brings me, but you, but what do you like, because you have worked with a lot of different directors. You work and you've, and do you want to direct, right?

• 1:03:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:43Amy Poehler?

I mean, you have directed already, but you want to do that more?

• 1:03:47Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, I've never directed a movie.

• 1:03:49Amy Poehler?

  Well, you've directed TV.

• 1:03:51Speaker 02

  No, I haven't.

• 1:03:51Amy Poehler?

  You haven't?

• 1:03:52Speaker 02

Well, I direct, I directed, yes.

• 1:03:55Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:55Speaker 02

I directed a, an episode of a Showtime show called Cinematose.

• 1:04:00Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:00Speaker 02

  Um, that Jeff created.

• 1:04:03Amy Poehler?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:04Speaker 02

And it was a, it was a, during the pandemic and it was a really, really cool show and I loved my episode. Um, unfortunately, I don't think you can watch it anymore. I don't think it exists.

• 1:04:16Amy Poehler?

  It just went away.

• 1:04:16Speaker 02

I think Showtime like literally just erased it.

• 1:04:19Amy Poehler?

It's kind of weird about some TV, like we were making jokes about how to find parks, but some TV just is like, it's gone away.

• 1:04:26Speaker 02

  It's just gone.

• 1:04:26Amy Poehler?

  It goes away.

• 1:04:27Speaker 02

  It's weird.

• 1:04:27Amy Poehler?

I mean, I guess when I was growing up, that is what happened with TV. You couldn't watch it again.

• 1:04:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:04:32Amy Poehler?

But it just went away, but.

• 1:04:33Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 1:04:34Amy Poehler?

But now it feels weird that it goes away.

• 1:04:35Speaker 02

Yeah. But yeah, no, I haven't directed, I want to direct a movie, but like, I'm skilled.

• 1:04:42Amy Poehler?

  Girl.

• 1:04:43Speaker 02

I know, but you know what it is? It's like I, I wanna, I know, but I, it's like I want, I'm, I'm a little bit like, um,

• 1:04:52Speaker 02

I'm being too precious about it.

• 1:04:54Amy Poehler?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:04:54Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:04:55Amy Poehler?

Yeah, you're just gonna just do it.

• 1:04:56Speaker 02

But I want to have something to say. I have something I want to.

• 1:04:58Amy Poehler?

  Something to say.

• 1:04:59Speaker 02

  I want to, shut up.

• 1:05:00Amy Poehler?

  I mean.

• 1:05:00Speaker 02

  I want to say, what?

• 1:05:02Amy Poehler?

  Sorry.

• 1:05:04Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:05:05Amy Poehler?

  Sorry, I interrupted.

• 1:05:06Speaker 02

  No, tell me.

• 1:05:07Amy Poehler?

What do you want to say?

• 1:05:08Speaker 02

  I literally don't know.

• 1:05:08Amy Poehler?

What do you want to say?

• 1:05:08Speaker 02

I don't want to say anything. I want to do a movie where I say nothing. How about that? It's called Seinfeld the Movie.

• 1:05:17Amy Poehler?

Okay. And so what would be like, as we wrap up?

• 1:05:20Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:05:21Amy Poehler?

Back to movies. What are the movies that like give you, what are the movies, like what are your comfort movies?

• 1:05:28Amy Poehler?

You know, speaking of comfort, just a reminder that Frankie's been asleep under your chair the entire time. Best dog ever.

• 1:05:35Speaker 02

  Best dog ever.

• 1:05:35Amy Poehler?

Dakota Johnson was on and she brought her dog.

• 1:05:39Speaker 02

She thinks she's better than me.

• 1:05:42Amy Poehler?

No, sorry. No. It's not a competition.

• 1:05:48Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:05:49Amy Poehler?

Frankie wins best dog for sure.

• 1:05:50Speaker 02

  Yeah, she does.

• 1:05:52Amy Poehler?

  Okay, but comfort movies.

• 1:05:53Speaker 02

  Comfort movies.

• 1:05:57Speaker 02

  You've Got Mail.

• 1:05:58Amy Poehler?

  Love You've Got Mail.

• 1:05:59Speaker 02

Speaking of Tarantino, on his top 10 favorite movies of all time.

• 1:06:03Amy Poehler?

Yeah, but guess what? If he made it.

• 1:06:05Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:06:05Amy Poehler?

It'd be like, you got mail, you open the envelope, there's a finger in it.

• 1:06:09Speaker 02

  No, he would never.

• 1:06:11Amy Poehler?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:06:12Speaker 02

  He would never.

• 1:06:13Amy Poehler?

  Okay.

• 1:06:14Speaker 02

You've Got Mail, I love that movie. That's like a real comfort movie. When Harry Met Sally. I think like a lot of like 90s like rom-coms are really comfort movies for me. Like I grew up like on all those movies, like Sleepless in Seattle and just all those movies.

• 1:06:29Amy Poehler?

I watched two on a plane recently, Parenthood and Moonstruck.

• 1:06:32Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, Moonstruck is...

• 1:06:34Amy Poehler?

  Parenthood's so good, too.

• 1:06:35Speaker 02

  Love Moonstruck.

• 1:06:36Amy Poehler?

Moonstruck. Okay, and then I ask everybody this, like, and this is maybe, you know, this is like, take some more import for you this year probably than other times, but like, what do you, what makes you actually laugh? What do you do when you really want to like deeply laugh? Where do you go? Do you watch something? Do you read something? Do you go to friends? Do you?

• 1:07:00Speaker 02

Like, I mean, there's certain, I would say there's just certain people that make me laugh. I don't laugh a lot when I watch things.

• 1:07:10Amy Poehler?

It's like a question I've asked a lot of people because to me, it's like, it's basically like, how do you? How do you stay?

• 1:07:18Speaker 02

  Happy?

• 1:07:19Amy Poehler?

  Above the line.

• 1:07:20Speaker 02

  Laughing?

• 1:07:21Amy Poehler?

How do you stay on the cliff? And not in the gorge?

• 1:07:27Amy Poehler?

May I tell you what I've observed that you've been laughing at? I do feel like, I feel like the...

• 1:07:35Amy Poehler?

The way in which your friends know you and you know them, like the way you like create family and the way that you feel like safe around people and the way that you can like laugh at yourself. You have a very good sense of humor about yourself.

• 1:07:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:54Amy Poehler?

You're you're able to get teased really hard and you love to tease.

• 1:07:58Speaker 02

Yeah, I like that. I like teasing you.

• 1:07:59Amy Poehler?

I do too. And that's a it's I think it's a love language. I don't know if it's East Coast, I don't know, it's whatever. But like to me, like, the more comfortable I am with someone, the more I want to tease them and want to be teased by them.

• 1:08:11Speaker 02

Yeah, I would say, yeah, like my closest friends, like, like Bombardo, you know, my all my group of my women friends that we were in an all-girl improv group, but then we turned into a coven, legit. We call ourselves Bombardo, like, we do, we have like a text chain and we do like Zooms and we do like trips. And those girls make me laugh really, really hard. Also, we all known each other for so long. I took my oldest, that's the best thing that makes me laugh is just funny. All my funny friends.

• 1:08:41Amy Poehler?

  Well, Plaza, we did it.

• 1:08:44Speaker 02

  We did.

• 1:08:45Amy Poehler?

  We really did it.

• 1:08:46Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:08:47Amy Poehler?

Great job. Thank you for doing this. It means a lot that you came.

• 1:08:51Speaker 02

  I got the part.

• 1:08:53Amy Poehler?

You got the part. You got the part of yourself.

• 1:08:56Speaker 02

Okay, finally, after all these years.

• 1:08:58Amy Poehler?

I needed you to audition for the part of you in the podcast. And congratulations.

• 1:09:05Speaker 02

  Thank you so much.

• 1:09:08Amy Poehler?

Thank you, Aubrey Plaza, AKA April Ludgate, my daughter, sister, wife, friend. And we all wanted you to be here and we're really glad you are. And that was so fun and funny and always a good hang with you. So thank you for coming. They include Little Hours, Life After Beth, Spin Me Round. They're all really great, beautiful, funny films that you should check out and check out Jeff Bana's work. He's an incredible writer and director. And and and his work is really special.

• 1:09:53Amy Poehler?

And it leads me to say that, you know, if if someone you know or you yourself is struggling.
