Did you ever consider being a rings guy when you moved to Hollywood?

• 0:34Speaker 02

Get a bunch of rings and stuff?

• 0:35Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 0:36Speaker 02

  No.

• 0:37Adam Friedland?

  No.

• 0:38Speaker 02

  Do you have any tattoos?

• 0:39Adam Friedland?

  No.

• 0:40Speaker 02

  Do you have any piercings?

• 0:41Adam Friedland?

  I had an earring.

• 0:42Speaker 02

  Oh, you did?

• 0:43Adam Friedland?

Yeah. But I took it out one night.

• 0:46Speaker 02

I could see a little, the remnants of it. Very embarrassing.

• 1:18Adam Friedland?

Ladies and gentlemen, this next guest is a legendary comedian, director, filmmaker. He's the host of On Cinema and Office Hours. Please welcome Tim Heidecker, everyone.

• 1:34Speaker 02

  Hey, look at you!

• 1:38Speaker 02

Hey! The Five Guys. It's the Five Guys from the burka place.

• 1:44Adam Friedland?

Yeah. It's my friends, yeah. Guys, we're very excited to have you here.

• 1:49Speaker 02

Your clapper guy said, as he passed me, he says, "Good luck."

• 1:52Adam Friedland?

  He said that?

• 1:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:54Adam Friedland?

He's an intern. What is he saying, talking like that?

• 1:55Speaker 02

  "Good luck."

• 1:57Adam Friedland?

He just got out of New York University, this kid. He's got a big future ahead of him, though.

• 2:00Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 2:01Adam Friedland?

  He's a good guy.

• 2:02Speaker 02

  Stay on his good side.

• 2:03Adam Friedland?

I feel like I impart too much wisdom since Zack started, and it feels, I hope it feels genuine.

• 2:10Speaker 02

  Well, good luck.

• 2:11Adam Friedland?

I guess so. Yeah, Tim, I told you this on the phone, but 12 years ago, you were in DC.

• 2:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:19Adam Friedland?

I was nauseously nervous. And you ended up coming back to our, me and my ex-girlfriend's apartment. We hung out after the Comedy Bang Bang live show.

• 2:33Speaker 02

  With James Adomian.

• 2:34Adam Friedland?

With James Adomian, who performed, I had like a DIY venue in DC.

• 2:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:39Adam Friedland?

  He performed there before.

• 2:41Speaker 02

Yeah, you told me that. I don't remember it, but...

• 2:43Adam Friedland?

It was a, I don't know, I was like, I've only acted like that twice around people, and it was you and Dice. I was like fumbling over my words when I met him. I was like, it's him.

• 2:55Speaker 02

It was an odd move for me to go to, this would have been 12 years ago.

• 3:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:01Speaker 02

  To go to an apartment.

• 3:02Adam Friedland?

I was 14 years old at the time.

• 3:03Speaker 02

  Yeah, see.

• 3:04Adam Friedland?

  We smoked crack.

• 3:05Speaker 02

I bought you guys beer, right?

• 3:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, you bought us beer.

• 3:08Speaker 02

  Stop by the 7-Eleven.

• 3:09Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and Whippets, yeah. Yeah, no, I was living with my ex-girlfriend, who's at that time, receiving DJing lessons from my best friend. And they are married.

• 3:21Speaker 02

  Cool.

• 3:22Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, pretty good. They fell in love behind the ones and twos.

• 3:25Speaker 02

So you grew up watching, you were a fan of what I was doing back on Adult Swim and everything?

• 3:31Adam Friedland?

  I was a big fan.

• 3:32Speaker 02

  That's nice.

• 3:33Adam Friedland?

And like, you know, I wasn't like a celebrity yet, so I didn't know how to be around...

• 3:36Speaker 02

And how was I, was I decent with you?

• 3:39Adam Friedland?

You were so down to earth. You did take a cigarette out of my mouth and said that it's for trashy people.

• 3:44Speaker 02

  Did not really?

• 3:45Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and you're like, "Promise me you won't ever smoke again."

• 3:47Speaker 02

  Oh, that's so funny.

• 3:48Adam Friedland?

  And I think I said, "I promise, I promise."

• 3:50Speaker 02

I was a real zealot with that back, because I just quit.

• 3:52Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:53Speaker 02

And I was like, I was a real staunch anti-cigarette guy.

• 3:57Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:58Speaker 02

Now I sneak one every once in a while.

• 3:59Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, you're like a reformed sinner.

• 4:02Speaker 02

At the wedding or whatever, I'll have one.

• 4:05Adam Friedland?

  Who's wedding?

• 4:06Speaker 02

Anybody's. I go to so many weddings. I do comedy and magic at weddings now.

• 4:09Adam Friedland?

  Just to rip six, yeah.

• 4:12Speaker 02

I've done a lot of magic at weddings.

• 4:14Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I just found out that like, our Indian friend from college, I wasn't close enough to get the invite. But you get to wear like, the outfit.

• 4:24Speaker 02

  The sarong?

• 4:25Adam Friedland?

It's like, the one time you're allowed to culturally appropriate.

• 4:28Speaker 02

  Right.

• 4:29Adam Friedland?

If you're the white guy at your Indian friend's wedding.

• 4:30Speaker 02

Well, I'm culturally appropriating my own culture today, but it's just from a different era.

• 4:35Adam Friedland?

  What is that?

• 4:36Speaker 02

  This is all Amazon.

• 4:37Adam Friedland?

  Amazon? Really?

• 4:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:40Adam Friedland?

I had Blake Griffin on the show and he's doing the NBA like team, like the studio team for Amazon. And I asked him if he thought that the workers were paid enough at the factories.

• 4:53Speaker 02

He's doing, oh, well, that's, I mean, please, call it out when you can.

• 4:57Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 4:58Speaker 02

Let's be honest about our hypocrisies.

• 5:00Adam Friedland?

I don't know. Bezos is the one I respect, the one billionaire I respect. I know people lump him in with the rest, but I just like the fact that he's still a Miami guy.

• 5:09Speaker 02

  He's a good-looking guy.

• 5:11Adam Friedland?

He just looks insane. Yeah. His girlfriend is so Miami.

• 5:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:15Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:16Speaker 02

  He's real trash.

• 5:17Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 5:18Speaker 02

  I mean, all due respect.

• 5:20Adam Friedland?

  I don't know. I wonder how much-

• 5:22Speaker 02

  Tight, I should say.

• 5:24Adam Friedland?

His body is tight? He's kind of got a rogues thing, but actually like, kind of more appropriate for the size.

• 5:31Speaker 02

I try to, I mean, should I, should I get big and like, big and muscly?

• 5:36Adam Friedland?

You want to start going with steroids with me?

• 5:38Speaker 02

Well, I start, I go to, I do go to the gym and I lift weights and stuff, because they say when you get, I'm almost 50, and they say you got to do that for longevity and everything. Absolutely no impact, like, I don't see any, I don't, I'm still-

• 5:52Adam Friedland?

  I'm seeing it right now.

• 5:53Speaker 02

  Lumpy and fat.

• 5:54Adam Friedland?

  You look phenomenal.

• 5:55Speaker 02

  I look sick.

• 5:56Adam Friedland?

  You and Eric-

• 5:57Speaker 02

I don't want to talk about the way I look, by the way.

• 6:00Adam Friedland?

Well, network said they want you to lose 200 pounds before we air this.

• 6:03Speaker 02

  Who did?

• 6:04Adam Friedland?

  The network.

• 6:05Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 6:05Adam Friedland?

Yeah. The same, the most odd, actually. People think right now that I'm getting paid by the DNC, like, they think that I'm the one they chose.

• 6:14Speaker 02

  You're a shill.

• 6:15Adam Friedland?

  Yeah. I haven't gotten a call yet.

• 6:17Speaker 02

I wish you would stick to comedy, too, because Funny Boy.

• 6:22Adam Friedland?

No, I want money at this point. I just want money at this point.

• 6:25Speaker 02

Do you, well, you don't, you're not on the social, on social media?

• 6:28Adam Friedland?

I have it, yeah, but I try not to.

• 6:31Speaker 02

  You don't post and stuff.

• 6:32Adam Friedland?

  I've been looking, yeah.

• 6:33Speaker 02

I do post a lot about, all sorts of stuff, and when I do, obviously, when I do post about politics, which I'm just a guy who has opinions about my, the world I live in.

• 6:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 6:44Speaker 02

And people get very upset and say, you should be- You should stick to comedy. That's, I get that every, every time. And I'm wondering if that's now just a...

• 6:54Adam Friedland?

Shut up and dribble, they're saying.

• 6:55Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. If that's now just like an AI, a bot. Is that a bot? Can we figure out if there are bots? Are there people out there who really feel that way?

• 7:04Adam Friedland?

No, those are the critics. Yeah, those are like, yeah, guys at The Times. Those are like, those are smart guys that are doing that, yeah. I like his fake talk show laugh for that shit joke.

• 7:16Speaker 02

It is, should I punch it up for you?

• 7:19Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, go ahead.

• 7:20Speaker 02

Let's do another take of my laugh.

• 7:21Adam Friedland?

  Um, okay.

• 7:22Speaker 02

  Just keep it clean.

• 7:24Adam Friedland?

Well, those guys are probably college professors of, yeah.

• 7:31Adam Friedland?

I do wonder that though, cause like, like I just did News Nation with Chris Cuomo.

• 7:36Speaker 02

You sent me the clip. I've never seen anybody so quickly send somebody else a clip of their own talk show.

• 7:42Adam Friedland?

It was the next day. It was the next day we were talking about it when I was there. I sent you the picture of me and Geraldo.

• 7:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 7:48Adam Friedland?

You sent me a picture of you and Odenkirk last night. We're both trying to impress each other.

• 7:52Speaker 02

  Calm down.

• 7:53Adam Friedland?

You sent me a picture of...

• 7:54Speaker 02

Like I said, we have 10 minutes.

• 7:57Adam Friedland?

Oh, no, no, no. Lock, lock the door, please.

• 7:59Speaker 02

I'm just starting, I'm just gonna play to my five guys now.

• 8:02Adam Friedland?

Lock the gates. Well, they're sucking up to you. And they're like, they have no respect for me. Kalen said, "Put on my suit in an aggressive manner."

• 8:09Speaker 02

Can we just step back a second, talk about my outfit? Because I feel like I started telling you, and then we went on Amazon, and we went all over the place.

• 8:16Adam Friedland?

Yeah, let's talk more about you. It's just an interview with you.

• 8:20Speaker 02

  I lost.

• 8:21Adam Friedland?

Anyway, yeah, go, what, who are you wearing?

• 8:24Speaker 02

I'm going, I'm here in New York for this premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival. And I get very uptight about what to wear to these things. And all the, everybody look, everybody, I don't look, I don't, I have issues with like, when I try to dress up, I look stupid, in my opinion.

• 8:41Adam Friedland?

But it's a power move to look crap, when everyone's trying to look good.

• 8:44Speaker 02

Yeah, that's the other thing. I could go in like a T-shirt.

• 8:47Adam Friedland?

Yeah, and people are like, "That guy's a wild card. That guy's a real maniac." Yeah, Zuckerberg style, yeah.

• 8:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, big, big white shirt.

• 8:54Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, fake muscles.

• 8:55Speaker 02

Big boxy white shirt. But then, so I looked on the internet and looked at Tribeca Film, I just typed in Tribeca Film Festival, uh, you know, images. And one of the first ones that came up was this Jerry Lewis picture from like five, 10, like two minutes before he died.

• 9:15Speaker 02

  Two minutes before he died.

• 9:16Adam Friedland?

  Really? In the hospital?

• 9:18Speaker 02

Him with Robert De Niro. They must have been doing like a king of comedy retrospective or something. And this was what he was wearing, essentially.

• 9:24Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 9:24Speaker 02

And so I had my friend track it down and get me, I mean, I had this girl that does costumes for us. And so I'm gonna wear this on the red carpet. So this is my little...

• 9:34Adam Friedland?

Are you gonna meet Bob? Bobby D?

• 9:36Speaker 02

  Bobby D, Bob Dylan.

• 9:38Adam Friedland?

Well, those are the two best ones, I guess.

• 9:41Speaker 02

I don't know. I don't know how that works. I've done the, I've been to the Tribeca Film Festival before and he's never, I've never met him before, so I doubt it.

• 9:48Adam Friedland?

What would you say? Let's practice your first line, your opening line.

• 9:51Speaker 02

  Oh! There he is.

• 9:54Adam Friedland?

Everyone does that to him all the time. Everyone does that to him all the time.

• 9:57Speaker 02

I would say, "Mr. De Niro, pleasure to meet you." Pass out.

• 10:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, this is good.

• 10:05Speaker 02

Because he's, you know, what a guy, what an actor.

• 10:07Adam Friedland?

I've got nipples too, Greg. Can you milk, yeah? That'd be good. He'd like that. Meet the fuckers.

• 10:13Speaker 02

Imagine the moment they said, "We're gonna, we're doing this. Their last name is Focker." We're, no, I don't care what the fucking studio says.

• 10:21Adam Friedland?

  I watched Parents and Fockers.

• 10:24Speaker 02

You can't say that. You can't say Focker. It's F-O-C-K-R. Yes, we can.

• 10:28Adam Friedland?

His name is Gaylord Focker? You can't make comedy anymore.

• 10:32Speaker 02

  No.

• 10:32Adam Friedland?

That's just, that's just, that, you know, the frickin', you know, Democrats, I guess.

• 10:38Speaker 02

  I don't know about that.

• 10:39Adam Friedland?

They took it away. I think it's the Democrat, I think it's Pelosi.

• 10:41Speaker 02

He's a little cringey when he gets into the Trump stuff.

• 10:44Adam Friedland?

  De Niro?

• 10:45Speaker 02

I think, yeah. I've also heard he's not like, well...

• 10:48Adam Friedland?

Yeah, he said fuck Trump, the first, the first...

• 10:51Speaker 02

  He gets real, he's real...

• 10:52Adam Friedland?

He said fuck Trump. And then there were all these videos of guys on Staten Island like smashing like portraits that they had in their house.

• 10:59Speaker 02

Oh, they're so mad about it.

• 11:00Adam Friedland?

"I had a lot of respect for you and I lost it." And they, you know, they have like, those posters that...

• 11:05Speaker 02

Airbrush paintings with Pacino, De Niro, Gandolfini.

• 11:08Adam Friedland?

If I could be on one of those, that'd be incredible. Going back to you...

• 11:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, let's get back to...

• 11:13Adam Friedland?

Okay, so like, what do you make of the common accusation that you and Eric just stole Sarah Sherman's whole act?

• 11:24Speaker 02

I've never heard that one before.

• 11:26Adam Friedland?

I believe you were at the Laugh Factory. Joe Rogan brought Sarah Sherman up on stage.

• 11:30Speaker 02

  This was 2004?

• 11:31Adam Friedland?

Yeah, 2004. This was the day before Mencia. I think the Mencia one took all the headlines.

• 11:37Speaker 02

  Right.

• 11:38Adam Friedland?

So Sarah Sherman, and then her vagina exploded. You were like, that's a good idea. We should put this on adults.

• 11:44Speaker 02

Yeah, Eric and I were club comics.

• 11:46Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 11:47Speaker 02

And we were just doing kind of like airline stuff. And vegetarians are wimpy people. That was one of my big, you remember that bit I used to do? Vegetarians are wimpy people?

• 12:00Adam Friedland?

I remember Sarah Sherman doing that bit.

• 12:03Speaker 02

No, no. What I'm saying is Sarah Sherman was doing weird cable access kind of things. She was 10, I think, at the time.

• 12:10Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 12:11Speaker 02

The youngest comic at the comic strip. But I love Sarah. We produced some kind of, some pilot for her before Lauren got his claws in her.

• 12:22Adam Friedland?

  Lauren?

• 12:22Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 12:23Adam Friedland?

  Lauren Boebert?

• 12:23Speaker 02

  Lauren Boebert.

• 12:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 12:26Speaker 02

I love pretending that he's a woman when I talk to my friends about him. You know, like, this, Lauren running SNL, she's gotta go.

• 12:35Adam Friedland?

Yeah. I want to fuck the shit out of Lauren. My, I'm sorry. I don't know why I went there. This guy's a father.

• 12:42Speaker 02

Did you read for, you auditioned for SNL?

• 12:45Adam Friedland?

  No. No.

• 12:46Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 12:47Adam Friedland?

But can I tell you something?

• 12:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:49Adam Friedland?

It would have been so cool. I would have bombed.

• 12:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:53Adam Friedland?

I would have gotten so nervous. I still like have a, it is still cool.

• 12:59Speaker 02

Seems like the, the evidence to me seems like the bar can be low, though. Like, if you're auditioning and you just have it at the moment, you're just like, "I'm the ketchup guy." And then you hear them like giggling.

• 13:12Adam Friedland?

  Is that what you did?

• 13:13Speaker 02

  That's what I did.

• 13:14Adam Friedland?

  That's what you did?

• 13:14Speaker 02

I got all the way up and then like-

• 13:16Adam Friedland?

You had an audition for SNL?

• 13:17Speaker 02

It was between me and Katan.

• 13:19Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 13:19Speaker 02

Mm-hmm. I had the ketchup guy. I had the ketchup guy.

• 13:23Adam Friedland?

I just watched Corky. I watched Corky Romano recently.

• 13:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:27Adam Friedland?

  Phenomenal.

• 13:28Speaker 02

  Is it?

• 13:28Adam Friedland?

  Phenomenal.

• 13:29Speaker 02

He had, he broke his neck on SNL, do you know that?

• 13:34Adam Friedland?

  No, I didn't know that.

• 13:34Speaker 02

  Chris Catan did, yeah.

• 13:35Adam Friedland?

What happened? Everyone hates him from that era, right?

• 13:38Speaker 02

  I don't know about that.

• 13:39Adam Friedland?

  He's a coke liar, he's a cocaine liar.

• 13:42Speaker 02

I don't know about that, but, and I don't know him, but I'll, I just, you can look it up. What is it they do, what does PBD always do? Chat GPT.

• 13:53Adam Friedland?

  Oh, yeah.

• 13:53Speaker 02

Look it up. What's your name again?

• 13:55Speaker 03

  Jonah.

• 13:55Speaker 02

Jonah, Jonah, look it up, look it up, Chris Catan broke his neck, look it up.

• 13:59Adam Friedland?

  What did he do?

• 14:01Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 14:01Adam Friedland?

  He was doing mango?

• 14:02Speaker 02

  He was doing pratfall, yeah.

• 14:03Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 14:04Speaker 02

  Died.

• 14:05Adam Friedland?

  He's dead?

• 14:06Speaker 02

  He was killed.

• 14:07Adam Friedland?

Oh, my God. I forgot how funny the other characters in that movie are, because it's like-

• 14:11Speaker 02

  Corky Romano.

• 14:12Adam Friedland?

Yeah, he has a brother whose whole character is that he's illiterate. He doesn't know how to read. And the other one, his entire character is that he's gay, but he doesn't realize it.

• 14:21Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 14:21Adam Friedland?

  And it's like-

• 14:22Speaker 02

He's the two, he's these characters?

• 14:23Adam Friedland?

Those are, no, well, those are the, yeah, like, it's really just deep stuff, but incredible. But he was actually very kinetic and physical and like, yeah.

• 14:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:33Adam Friedland?

  There's this-

• 14:33Speaker 02

  No, he's, yeah.

• 14:34Adam Friedland?

  But-

• 14:35Speaker 02

  My favorite-

• 14:35Adam Friedland?

But you called him a cocaine liar, right?

• 14:37Speaker 02

  I did not, you did.

• 14:39Adam Friedland?

I thought that's what the, he did, right?

• 14:41Speaker 03

Yes, yes, and he claims he broke his neck during-

• 14:43Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:44Speaker 03

A SNL sketch called MSNBC Investigates in May 2001. He stated that the injury almost paralyzed him and led to his struggle with drug addiction and career setbacks.

• 14:54Adam Friedland?

He did sniz because he broke his neck?

• 14:56Speaker 02

  This, yeah.

• 14:57Speaker 03

  Yeah, and career setbacks.

• 14:58Speaker 02

This is famous, I'm sure, I mean, if you don't want to include this because everyone knows this already-

• 15:03Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 15:03Speaker 02

It's fine with me, but I'm sure everyone knows the story about Dana Carvey shooting Master of Disguise.

• 15:09Adam Friedland?

  I think it's not true.

• 15:10Speaker 02

On 9/11, and he was in that turtle costume?

• 15:13Adam Friedland?

  I think it's not true.

• 15:14Speaker 02

  Let's just pretend-

• 15:14Adam Friedland?

Because it is the best thing, it has to be true.

• 15:16Speaker 02

  It has to be true.

• 15:17Adam Friedland?

It's like when my dad, my dad said, like, if the moon landing wasn't real, he's like, it just has to be real.

• 15:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:24Adam Friedland?

It's like, it meant so much to me.

• 15:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:26Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 15:26Speaker 02

  I do, I agree.

• 15:27Adam Friedland?

Him being in the turtle suit during-

• 15:28Speaker 02

  But it's been debunked?

• 15:29Adam Friedland?

I think it has been debunked. It broke my fucking heart when I heard that. I just, yeah. Yeah, doodle, doodle, yeah, that unreal.

• 15:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:37Adam Friedland?

Taking a moment of silence in the doodle soup. I mean, that had to have been, it has to be real. I mean, who would have made that up? Probably Chris Ten, Coke liar.

• 15:48Speaker 02

Yeah, well, ordained, Mike Myers might have planted it. But, because those guys were feuding, but.

• 15:54Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 15:55Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, maybe it's one of those things where it's like, well, we were shooting that day, but I was already, I hadn't gotten into costume yet. You know, it could be one of those, like, sort of true, but not, not as good as we want it to be.

• 16:07Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. You're from Allentown, Pennsylvania?

• 16:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:10Adam Friedland?

You wanted to do comedy as a kid, or no?

• 16:11Speaker 02

Hmm, yeah, of course, yeah, yes.

• 16:14Adam Friedland?

What, like, who, who, what did you, what did you see when you were a kid that you, like?

• 16:19Speaker 02

I mean, from the beginning, like, Abbott and Costello, no, I'm not joking. If you wanted a real answer, it's hard to not joke around.

• 16:28Adam Friedland?

I don't have the Criterion collection.

• 16:30Speaker 02

Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein's, great movie.

• 16:33Adam Friedland?

Is it, it is, it is a fun movie.

• 16:35Speaker 02

  It's really, it's good.

• 16:36Adam Friedland?

They, it is really funny. I actually just recently saw Chaplin for the first time, because I was like, there's no way that's funny.

• 16:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:43Adam Friedland?

And it's funny. He's, he is really funny, actually.

• 16:45Speaker 02

  He's good at it.

• 16:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 16:46Speaker 02

He's good at what he's doing.

• 16:46Adam Friedland?

It sounds like it's from the olden days, and it shouldn't be funny.

• 16:50Speaker 02

I watched recently, very recently, Sherlock Jr., which is the Buster Keaton, a Buster Keaton movie.

• 16:57Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 16:57Speaker 02

And that's also, like, unbelievable. Not necessarily funny, but like, he's doing stunts and, and, you know, elaborate, jumping off of trains and still, like, Mission Impossibles kind of stuff.

• 17:14Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, the clock thing, right?

• 17:16Speaker 02

  That's not, that's Harold Lloyd, I think.

• 17:18Adam Friedland?

  Oh, sorry.

• 17:21Adam Friedland?

  Now, there's a repeat of.

• 17:22Speaker 02

I can go through like, a million things, but definitely Weird Al Yankovic, Yankovic, Yankovic, Yankovic, Weird Al.

• 17:33Speaker 02

SNL, Kids in the Hall, Monty Python, you know, in my high school days. Spinal Tap.

• 17:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 17:41Speaker 02

Anything I can get my hands on. There wasn't that much. It was not, you know, I didn't have the internet the way we do now. And so I was just, whatever was, there was no like underground comedy that I was watching, you know?

• 17:53Adam Friedland?

Well, I was talking with Caleb before the show. It's like, interesting that like, Steve Martin was like selling out Madison Square Garden and like Andy Kaufman was like...

• 18:02Speaker 02

  Huge.

• 18:03Adam Friedland?

Yeah, he was on, I mean, those things nowadays, I wonder if they could be mainstream nowadays. Like, what was it about like, that era where like something so left field could be like, so, I don't know, embraced, like in the mainstream sense?

• 18:20Speaker 02

Steve Martin and Andy Kaufman are very similar.

• 18:24Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 18:25Speaker 02

I think Steve Martin's way more palatable. Like, he kind of did a lot of the same things, but did it a little broader. And not in a bad way, just is what it is. But I think, my opinion is, there was not that many outlets, so people were watching what everybody, everybody's kind of watching the same thing.

• 18:49Adam Friedland?

Right. But it's weird shit, though.

• 18:52Speaker 02

They worked very hard. It is really weird.

• 18:54Adam Friedland?

Especially to be the first guy to be like doing weird shit like that. Because Kaufman is kind of like, emulated so many times now, but it was kind of the first guy, right?

• 19:04Speaker 02

Yeah. There were a few very like, brazen, artistic-minded producer types that pushed for that stuff. I gotta give credit to our friend Lauren Michaels. He was early, early adopter of...

• 19:18Adam Friedland?

  Hello, nurse.

• 19:20Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, say what you will, but it's true.

• 19:23Adam Friedland?

He was the first host of SNL, right?

• 19:25Speaker 02

  Andy Kaufman?

• 19:26Adam Friedland?

  Was it?

• 19:27Speaker 02

No, it was George Carlin. But he was on the first episode. I'm writing a book about the first, first year of, the first episode of SNL.

• 19:34Adam Friedland?

  It's so bad.

• 19:35Speaker 02

I'm actually writing a movie about the first episode of SNL. It all takes place that one night.

• 19:43Speaker 02

But my other point was that they were, they were baby boomers playing, they were like, they were the first generation to have grown up on watching television. And they were sort of the first guys that were making fun of television, or making fun of entertainment, being like, postmodern about it. And that made sense to a lot of, you know, my parents' generation. They understood how, they grew up with the pretense of, the phoniness of show business. And it hit right at the, at the peak of that. And there were a couple guys like Steve Martin, Andy Kaufman, and Albert Brooks's talk show appearances, have you seen those?

• 20:21Adam Friedland?

He was the second host of SNL, second episode.

• 20:23Speaker 02

No, he was, he made films for SNL.

• 20:26Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 20:27Speaker 02

  Never hosted.

• 20:28Adam Friedland?

Albert was like incredible as a guy, I mean, he did like a norm thing too, right? Where it was like high concept.

• 20:34Speaker 02

Yes, high, very written, he did like the ventriloquist thing, have you ever seen the ventriloquist?

• 20:40Adam Friedland?

Of course, yeah, he's the best.

• 20:41Speaker 02

  He's, he's the best.

• 20:42Adam Friedland?

We just in the office, watched the, watched the Gary Marshall scene in Lost in America to take a break, yeah.

• 20:51Speaker 02

I could, I wish, I'm not the kind of guy that like, I'm doing this lately, like the Jordan Peterson thing where I close my eyes.

• 20:57Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 20:58Speaker 02

  To try to remember.

• 20:59Adam Friedland?

  Trans people don't exist!

• 21:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 21:02Speaker 02

But it is helping me these days, but I'm not the kind of guy that memorizes stuff, but I would memorize, I would like to have that scene just fully memorized.

• 21:10Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 21:11Speaker 02

And be able to just tell my children, act it out.

• 21:14Adam Friedland?

It's kind of, it's kind of like, one of the best like scenes in any movie, like.

• 21:18Speaker 02

The Desert Inn has heart, right? The Desert?

• 21:21Adam Friedland?

I, I was saying, I was saying that I just hate that song.

• 21:24Speaker 02

  I do.

• 21:25Adam Friedland?

I always remember, it's not a good song. He's like, I'll write a jiggle for you.

• 21:28Speaker 02

I can't give you money back. You're a nice guy, you've amused me, but.

• 21:31Adam Friedland?

  He's unreal.

• 21:32Speaker 02

  It's the best.

• 21:33Adam Friedland?

  He's unreal.

• 21:34Speaker 02

Speaking of Gary Marshall, I mean, we should just acknowledge who I sat in front of last night at.

• 21:40Adam Friedland?

  Penny Marshall?

• 21:41Speaker 02

At the Glenn Gary Glenn Ross.

• 21:45Adam Friedland?

  Who was that?

• 21:46Speaker 02

  Arthur Von Zerelli.

• 21:48Adam Friedland?

  No shit.

• 21:49Speaker 02

  The Von.

• 21:50Adam Friedland?

Tiny, right? Like five foot one.

• 21:52Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 21:53Adam Friedland?

I, I saw Scorsese once, and also just five foot one, and just dressed so slick. And I was like, that's the coolest guy I've ever seen in my life.

• 22:02Speaker 02

I felt very, well, it's funny you mention the height, because I, we were fairly close. We, I saw Glenn Gary Glenn Ross on Broadway. All right. It's a big deal.

• 22:14Adam Friedland?

  Check it out.

• 22:15Speaker 02

  Let's get applause, maybe.

• 22:16Adam Friedland?

  Let's give it up.

• 22:18Speaker 02

  I saw the play.

• 22:20Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 22:21Speaker 02

  In a lot of ways.

• 22:25Adam Friedland?

  And so Fonz, he was.

• 22:26Speaker 02

One of my, I mean, if we're talking about my background, the guy that we sent a videotape to.

• 22:32Adam Friedland?

  Was Bob.

• 22:32Speaker 02

Was Bob Odenkirk. And Bob, to this day, is still someone very close to me and like. I, I'm just being honest with you. He was like, he was my mentor. He was almost like an uncle figure, a father figure to me and still very close. And it was very moving to get to see him in this play. Like, he was so good and everything about it was so good. And I was there as his guest, which was quite an honor. But the theater was, I saw these wonderful seats, fairly close. But the stage, the, the, the stage itself was fairly low. And the seats were not, these were not stadium seats. I promise you, I'm going somewhere.

• 23:13Adam Friedland?

  So you're blocking Fonz.

• 23:14Speaker 02

  So I'm blocking the Fonz.

• 23:15Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 23:16Speaker 02

But there's a guy in front of me who's bigger head than me, higher up. And so my view is blocked. And so I'm trying to find this like medium where I'm not.

• 23:27Adam Friedland?

  Out of respect.

• 23:27Speaker 02

Out of respect for, oh, ay, Fonzie. And he was, by the way, he was very nice and.

• 23:35Adam Friedland?

  Did you met Winkler?

• 23:36Speaker 02

Well, I did a movie with his son. I was in a movie his son directed.

• 23:40Adam Friedland?

Oh, yeah, his son, Max Winkler.

• 23:41Speaker 02

So that was my, that was my in.

• 23:42Adam Friedland?

  Oh, really?

• 23:42Speaker 02

I turned around, I said, and people were coming up to him and stuff.

• 23:46Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 23:47Speaker 02

I was trying to be respectful, but I said, I did a movie with Max. And he, and he goes, I did this movie called Flower. He goes, of course you did.

• 23:56Adam Friedland?

  This is so nice.

• 23:56Speaker 02

And then he was so sweet. And then we just, we got along real, he wanted to know about me and we talked for a while.

• 24:02Adam Friedland?

You, you hung out all night?

• 24:04Speaker 02

  We went backstage.

• 24:05Adam Friedland?

You went back to your, to your, your DIY apartment?

• 24:09Speaker 02

I don't want people to say things about me, what I'm this elitist and everything. But there are moments that you have in life where it's neat to be. In this business of show.

• 24:20Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 24:21Speaker 02

And I mean, I grew up, I don't know about you, I'm watching The Fonz every week.

• 24:25Adam Friedland?

  No.

• 24:26Speaker 02

  This is my generation.

• 24:27Adam Friedland?

It's your generation. I was watching, I was watching the news, Wolf Plus Three. I was watching, no. I was watching the OJ trial.

• 24:35Speaker 02

  Iraq getting bombed in 91.

• 24:38Adam Friedland?

I remember the OJ trial as a kid. That was like one of the first things I remembered. Because my dad was like the only white man in America who was convinced he was innocent.

• 24:47Speaker 02

  Really?

• 24:48Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I think he was projecting his own life onto the trial.

• 24:51Speaker 02

Was your dad, you're from DC, was your family?

• 24:54Adam Friedland?

No, no, I'm from Las Vegas, actually. Yeah. I was, I was born in LA and then we moved to Vegas.

• 25:01Speaker 02

  The desert in has heart.

• 25:03Adam Friedland?

  It's such a bad song. It's terrible.

• 25:06Speaker 02

Well, he's desperate, he's in his robe, he's not, the first idea is not going to be the best idea in that situation.

• 25:11Adam Friedland?

It's, yeah, it kind of works, actually, if that's the reading of it. I just always, it was always just like, stop, that, you couldn't make up a better song, Albert Einstein.

• 25:20Speaker 02

I like it, I don't have a problem with it, I'm not with you on that one.

• 25:23Adam Friedland?

I like, I mean, those movies are so good. Real life is so good.

• 25:28Speaker 02

This is like, I want to say fairly early, maybe high school, but Lost in America was a movie that we'd watch. My parents had great taste in comedy, so there was lots of those movies on. And my cousin and I used to watch that Lost in America and that, the scene where he's the crossing guard.

• 25:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 25:46Speaker 02

And the kids are riding their bikes around him and calling him a Brillo Pad Fathead.

• 25:51Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 25:52Speaker 02

We just would, we'd say Brillo Pad Fathead all the time, just like.

• 25:55Adam Friedland?

That made it sway into the lexicon.

• 25:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 25:58Adam Friedland?

And you bullied a lot of kids growing up?

• 26:00Speaker 02

Did I bully a lot of kids? Not that I, not that I recall.

• 26:03Adam Friedland?

  Were you popular kid?

• 26:07Adam Friedland?

  A little respect.

• 26:09Speaker 02

Let's get some WD-40 on that door. I was at the gym this morning at the hotel, and they have the Peloton there.

• 26:16Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 26:16Speaker 02

  And it was doing that.

• 26:20Adam Friedland?

Did you complain in the front desk?

• 26:21Speaker 02

I thought about, I thought about saying, not complaining, but letting them know. It's like, no one is going to do anything about this.

• 26:27Adam Friedland?

  It's too squeaky.

• 26:28Speaker 02

Yeah. And it's, it's a small room, it's just like, if, it's, even with my headphones on, I just hear.

• 26:37Adam Friedland?

It sounds like kind of a sex.

• 26:39Speaker 02

  Sexual.

• 26:40Adam Friedland?

  Sex vibe.

• 26:42Speaker 02

Was I popular in high school?

• 26:43Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 26:44Speaker 02

Not, yeah, I was, I had a morning, no joke, had like a closed-circuit TV morning show in high school.

• 26:53Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 26:53Speaker 02

Yeah, in my last year of high school, second, two last, two years of that, yeah.

• 26:57Adam Friedland?

So you'd kind of been doing that thing for a bit?

• 26:59Speaker 02

  I know, yeah.

• 27:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 27:01Speaker 02

We did like a wacky morning news show that was in everyone, everyone's classroom every morning.

• 27:06Adam Friedland?

And they let you do it?

• 27:08Speaker 02

  They did.

• 27:08Adam Friedland?

Do you get in trouble at all?

• 27:10Speaker 02

I don't remember getting in trouble. We probably did, or probably got told to not do things. I don't, I have a pretty bad memory about that stuff, but where I grew up in Allentown, it was, I went to Catholic school and very, not very diverse, I should say, not very, not a lot of other types of people around in Allentown in the 90s. And I went to Temple University in Philadelphia, which is very diverse, lots of different kinds of people, and quickly became really good friends with a guy named Jared Alterman, who's Jewish, and when we came, I came, took him home to meet my parents. I didn't take him home to meet my parents.

• 27:49Adam Friedland?

Did your dad show, show his gun?

• 27:51Speaker 02

He came back with me and he was like, "Hi, I'm Jared, I'm Tim's Jewish friend." I'm like his first Jewish friend.

• 27:57Adam Friedland?

Really? What did your parents say? P U.

• 28:00Speaker 02

He was, he had to take, he had to get fumigated and everything before he came in the house.

• 28:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, it's kind of a Borat-style family.

• 28:07Speaker 02

No, they were, they didn't, they thought it was funny, but that was kind of the environment I grew up in, pretty monocultury.

• 28:13Adam Friedland?

Did, did Billy Joel get it right in the song?

• 28:16Speaker 02

Well, I think Billy Joel got it pretty close, but it should have been called Bethlehem, which is the city next to Allentown.

• 28:24Adam Friedland?

Really? People don't say that. You know it's called Baba O'Reilly, actually?

• 28:29Speaker 02

  Baba O-

• 28:30Adam Friedland?

  That song.

• 28:31Speaker 02

Yeah, of course I know that.

• 28:32Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 28:33Speaker 02

  And do you know why?

• 28:37Adam Friedland?

So do you think that the...

• 28:39Speaker 02

It's because Baba, Pete Townsend was into this guru.

• 28:45Adam Friedland?

  Child pornography, oh, okay.

• 28:47Speaker 02

No, he was into this guru named Baba something.

• 28:49Adam Friedland?

  Baby?

• 28:50Speaker 02

  Baba, it wasn't O'Reilly.

• 28:54Adam Friedland?

  Baby O'Reilly?

• 28:59Adam Friedland?

  What?

• 28:59Speaker 03

  The Bagwans?

• 29:00Speaker 02

  No.

• 29:01Adam Friedland?

  Bagwan?

• 29:01Speaker 02

  Baba something.

• 29:02Adam Friedland?

  Bagwan?

• 29:04Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 29:04Adam Friedland?

  Baby.

• 29:05Speaker 02

  For the sake of...

• 29:09Adam Friedland?

So you went to college with Eric?

• 29:11Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 29:12Adam Friedland?

And then it was film school?

• 29:14Speaker 02

Then post-grad, med school, and we also went to law school.

• 29:19Adam Friedland?

  You're a lawyer and a doctor?

• 29:21Speaker 02

  And a doctor, yeah.

• 29:22Adam Friedland?

Wow. And so then what led you into Sarah's worm style, to copying, or, no. Yeah, I just, I feel like, especially growing up with your guys' stuff, it's just been replicated so much. That, as an aesthetic, and I know that you directed a lot of commercials, kind of like, were in the language of Tim and Eric.

• 29:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:45Adam Friedland?

Did you do the Old Spice commercials?

• 29:47Speaker 02

Well, we did one of them. I don't think we did the one, we did the one with Terry Crews.

• 29:52Adam Friedland?

He, his breasts, did you have him do the boob thing?

• 29:56Speaker 02

I don't, I kind of feel like they're, like, when you do commercials, you have this, these ad agency types with, that was such a weird sip.

• 30:06Adam Friedland?

Well, because it's dripping and this, I just got this suit. Look at all these drips.

• 30:11Speaker 02

I know, I have, I was, earlier today, I walked around and got my haircut, by the way, I don't know if you noticed.

• 30:15Adam Friedland?

  In the suit?

• 30:16Speaker 02

No, in a white t-shirt. And I got a coffee, and it was just like, I had dribbles all down this white shirt, it was like, can't live, I don't know how to live.

• 30:25Adam Friedland?

There were girls looking and everything?

• 30:27Speaker 02

  Probably, yeah.

• 30:28Adam Friedland?

  It's fucking embarrassing, man.

• 30:30Speaker 02

But when these commercials, you have these ad guys who kind of tell, who kind of write everything, and most, like, we're there for like 10%, of the je ne sais quoi, you know, of like, the little extra push.

• 30:41Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, I was a...

• 30:42Speaker 02

And getting it done, just kind of like facilitating the production of the whole thing, so I don't take a lot of like, pride or ownership over any of that stuff.

• 30:50Adam Friedland?

But the aesthetic kind of bled itself into like, the kind of zeitgeist?

• 30:54Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, like, we were doing that on our own with, and I should always say like... I always make, try to make clear that when we say Tim and Eric, or me, or Eric, and I think it's really us and like

• 31:07Adam Friedland?

  Doug.

• 31:07Speaker 02

Doug and John Kreisel, Ben Berman, Jonathan Mugar, like, small group of people that we were that were doing a lot of the work as well.

• 31:17Adam Friedland?

  It's also very editing heavy.

• 31:20Speaker 02

  Editing heavy.

• 31:20Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I mean, like, that's kind of like a half.

• 31:23Speaker 02

  I was very.

• 31:24Adam Friedland?

I'd say half of the equation.

• 31:25Speaker 02

I was barely a part of what we, when we say Tim and Eric.

• 31:29Adam Friedland?

  You just showed up.

• 31:29Speaker 02

  I'm hired, a hired gun.

• 31:32Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 31:32Speaker 02

  Could've been anybody.

• 31:33Adam Friedland?

I heard you were whacked out on, on force.

• 31:36Speaker 02

I was on a lot of keto at that time.

• 31:38Adam Friedland?

  You were on keto?

• 31:39Speaker 02

  A lot of keto, yeah.

• 31:40Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 31:41Speaker 02

  Keto bean.

• 31:42Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 31:42Speaker 02

Oh, I saw this great clip on, I was watching an old movie on the plane.

• 31:47Adam Friedland?

  Rat Race?

• 31:49Speaker 02

  No, it was Armageddon.

• 31:50Adam Friedland?

  Oh.

• 31:51Speaker 02

  I was really watching Armageddon.

• 31:53Adam Friedland?

  I love that movie.

• 31:54Speaker 02

  It's really good.

• 31:55Adam Friedland?

  Criterion Collection.

• 31:56Speaker 02

I don't know if it is.

• 31:57Adam Friedland?

  It is.

• 31:59Speaker 02

  Not Armageddon time.

• 32:00Adam Friedland?

Oh, no, chat, chat GPT is that?

• 32:02Speaker 03

  I know, I don't need to check.

• 32:04Speaker 02

Grok, it is, okay, good, by the way.

• 32:06Adam Friedland?

  By the way.

• 32:07Speaker 02

That's my PBD, by the way.

• 32:10Adam Friedland?

We gotta show with him, dude.

• 32:11Speaker 02

We gotta get on that show, go down to Casa.

• 32:15Adam Friedland?

  It's Palm Beach, right?

• 32:16Speaker 02

No, but there's a restaurant that he, this great YouTube guy, RM Brown, did this video about, he, all the time, he goes to this one restaurant called Casa, Casa di Angelo. He goes, we were at, last night, there's no joke, 11 of us at Casa di Angelo, we had a great time, great meal, great steaks.

• 32:35Adam Friedland?

  He goes to one restaurant?

• 32:37Speaker 02

He has a compilation of all the times, it's so funny.

• 32:41Adam Friedland?

  You're watching Armageddon?

• 32:43Speaker 02

And they say, like, there's this, like, where they're, all the guys are having to get physicals before they go into space.

• 32:49Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 32:49Speaker 02

And he's like, this one guy was on ketamine, he had ketamine in his system, and it seemed like you could take that meme together, some thing of Elon, you know what I mean?

• 32:59Adam Friedland?

  Jonah?

• 33:00Speaker 02

Let's get, get on, that'd be funny, blow up.

• 33:02Adam Friedland?

That'd be really funny. Do you think that, like, what's the, what's, what replication of that, your guy's style or aesthetic has bothered you the most? What's the worst kind of effect, like, attempt at, at the Tim and Eric Adult Swim kind of language?

• 33:20Speaker 02

  I don't know, I don't.

• 33:21Adam Friedland?

Say the worst one, you know it.

• 33:23Speaker 02

I don't think I know of anyone, do you have one?

• 33:27Adam Friedland?

  Of me?

• 33:28Speaker 02

Of, well, does anyone ripping you off yet? It's coming.

• 33:32Adam Friedland?

  I hope so.

• 33:34Speaker 02

  I don't know, I don't, I can't, nothing's coming to me right now.

• 33:37Adam Friedland?

  Nick Fuentes maybe?

• 33:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, Nick Fuentes.

• 33:39Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I don't know, are there post Adams? Probably not, yeah.

• 33:45Speaker 02

I'm sure there are, listen, I'll be honest with you, I'm sure there are, there's just nothing coming to mind. I don't really, there are a few, a few specific jokes that, maybe like, I'll tell you one.

• 33:57Adam Friedland?

  Sarah Sherman.

• 33:58Speaker 02

Sarah Sherman is way over the line.

• 34:00Adam Friedland?

What the fuck is she doing here, that's disgusting.

• 34:02Speaker 02

I think Jimmy Fallon has done a few things. Where, there's like a shorts, jorts thing that he did with like, I hate to say it, with like Will Ferrell, who I love.

• 34:13Adam Friedland?

That's your friend, that's your best friend.

• 34:14Speaker 02

He's one of my closest friends.

• 34:16Adam Friedland?

He stabbed you in the back.

• 34:18Speaker 02

And, well, we're not talking about stabbing.

• 34:19Adam Friedland?

  What was that, oh, sorry.

• 34:26Speaker 02

They did some like, very, very similar to our sort of kids break thing. I'm wearing jorts, these are my jorts, and they're like on green screen and, you know, dancing and bad rapping. But, it felt a little lazy, I'll say that, but.

• 34:42Adam Friedland?

  Did you have revenge?

• 34:43Speaker 02

  Live and let live.

• 34:44Adam Friedland?

You had revenge on your mind while you were?

• 34:46Speaker 02

  Long term, yeah.

• 34:48Adam Friedland?

  You're playing a long game.

• 34:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:50Adam Friedland?

It'll happen when they least expect it.

• 34:52Speaker 02

  There's a, there's a Bill Cosby joke about like.

• 34:55Adam Friedland?

  Spanish fly.

• 34:56Speaker 02

Yeah, no, not Spanish fly, where he's like, he was in a snowball fight as a kid and he got hit really bad, so he took this snowball, put it in the freezer and waited for it to be the summertime, and then like, when the kid was at least, he just threw a snowball at him in the, in July.

• 35:11Adam Friedland?

  That's good.

• 35:12Speaker 02

  That's what I'm gonna do.

• 35:13Adam Friedland?

Yeah, he was, what a legend, give it up for Bill Cosby.

• 35:17Speaker 02

  The bail. Well.

• 35:21Adam Friedland?

Did you, like, what's, do people misunderstand your work?

• 35:26Speaker 02

  Sure, why wouldn't they?

• 35:28Adam Friedland?

I mean, what, because it's so confusing, so random.

• 35:32Speaker 02

  Obfuscating.

• 35:32Adam Friedland?

I mean, what do you think is the most common, like, misreading of your guys' stuff? Or the stuff, anything you've done?

• 35:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:41Speaker 02

Well, I guess, you know, I've done, I've done a lot of characters that I use my own name for.

• 35:47Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 35:47Speaker 02

So, I suppose there are people that think I'm a terrible leather jacket, right-wing-type stand-up comedian, because I do a lot of that stuff online.

• 35:59Adam Friedland?

Do you think people can't just process, like, art anymore?

• 36:02Speaker 02

No, well, I think, the hard part is, most people probably-

• 36:05Adam Friedland?

  That's what comes to my-

• 36:06Speaker 02

  Excuse me!

• 36:06Adam Friedland?

Sorry, sorry, no, no, I just want to finish before I, before you answer. But that's what comes to mind with the, with the Andy Kaufman and Steve Martin thing, is like, I don't know if that could translate into the mainstream now. I think that people had more, like, kind of, like, capacity for it, perhaps.

• 36:23Speaker 02

Maybe, but I think back then, well, with Steve Martin, there was, there was a way into his work, this is just me speculating, I'm not an expert. But I felt like there was a way into that work, he set it up in a way that you're like, I get what this is, I get this is like a corny guy.

• 36:38Adam Friedland?

  There was a child aspect-

• 36:39Speaker 02

There was a childness, childishness to it. Kaufman was a little more, like, hard to figure out, and I'm sure a lot of people back then didn't get it.

• 36:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 36:49Speaker 02

The same way they wouldn't get it now.

• 36:51Adam Friedland?

You're saying that you're basically the Kaufman of today?

• 36:54Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 36:55Adam Friedland?

  Yes.

• 36:59Speaker 02

But he was also, like, cast on a major sitcom that was very popular.

• 37:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, Taxi.

• 37:04Speaker 02

Yeah, Taxi. So it was like, if Kramer- If Kramer, Jim Kramer from CNBC.

• 37:12Adam Friedland?

  CNBC, yeah.

• 37:12Speaker 02

No, if Kramer from Seinfeld during its peak would go out and do really weird.

• 37:18Adam Friedland?

  Pratt Falls.

• 37:18Speaker 02

Pratt Falls without resorting to the N-word over and over again.

• 37:21Adam Friedland?

That, I thought, yeah, that was.

• 37:24Speaker 02

If you could do that in a weird way, that would be a similar experience that America would have had.

• 37:28Adam Friedland?

When you saw that the first time, did you have to remove that it was Kramer when you saw the Michael Richards tape?

• 37:34Speaker 02

  I didn't know if I.

• 37:35Adam Friedland?

To me, in my mind, that character is so ubiquitous, I'm like, that's Kramer.

• 37:40Speaker 02

Right. The funniest thing on the, one of the saddest.

• 37:44Adam Friedland?

  The apology.

• 37:45Speaker 02

  The apology on Letterman.

• 37:46Adam Friedland?

  Stop laughing.

• 37:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah. Hostage video situation.

• 37:50Adam Friedland?

Have you ever seen the, like, bloopers from Seinfeld where, like, he just, he's the only one, like, he's the only serious actor, he's like, god damn it, like, when they, when they break, he's like, this is unprofessional.

• 38:03Speaker 02

Oh, no, I haven't seen that. No, that's not fun.

• 38:06Adam Friedland?

Well, no, I think it's, you wouldn't expect it out of a Cosmo.

• 38:09Speaker 04

• 45:08Adam Friedland?

What's interesting is like that you like worked through in a network system and that you've kind of transitioned to like producing your stuff independently and like like I guess like was it out of frustration with like working through like networks or? I think it was just disinterest from from those people I mean

• 45:31Speaker 02

The sequence of events is like, pretty linear. It's like, we do a certain amount of things that eventually come to an end. There's no, there's no interest in doing more of them from those places. Because times have changed, interests have changed, things that were desired are no longer desired at that level, or there's just priorities are different, people leave. The people that were your allies, or support cheerleaders have moved on, or whatever.

• 46:00Adam Friedland?

Yeah, white men can't, they won't give jobs anymore.

• 46:03Speaker 02

Exactly. You're reading between the lines beautifully.

• 46:05Adam Friedland?

  That's what you're saying, yeah.

• 46:07Speaker 02

So, there were a few things that were like, alright, well, what are we gonna, what should I do now? And there's still like, still work within the system on other, on certain things, but...

• 46:18Adam Friedland?

Do you think the Jews have too much power? Is that what, I'm sorry.

• 46:23Speaker 02

I mean, I knew you were gonna go there.

• 46:24Adam Friedland?

  I'm sorry.

• 46:25Speaker 02

And, I really don't know how to handle that shit.

• 46:28Adam Friedland?

  Well, you can say it.

• 46:31Speaker 02

  I mean, I'm a little uncomfortable.

• 46:33Adam Friedland?

On Cinema seems like your opus, like, it's like a project that keeps growing.

• 46:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:38Adam Friedland?

  Like, how'd you meet Greg?

• 46:40Speaker 02

  Well, um, really?

• 46:45Adam Friedland?

  I've never heard it.

• 46:46Speaker 02

Oh, no, I mean, I'm just kidding.

• 46:48Adam Friedland?

We've listened to a bunch of interviews, we've never heard...

• 46:50Speaker 02

  Really?

• 46:50Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, I don't think you...

• 46:51Speaker 02

So, you're not on all the Reddit AMAs that I do? Which I do quite frequently?

• 46:57Adam Friedland?

Sam, is he saying it on Reddit?

• 46:58Speaker 02

  I'm just kidding.

• 46:59Speaker 04

  I haven't seen it.

• 47:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, you have.

• 47:01Speaker 04

  I haven't.

• 47:02Speaker 02

I was a huge Neil Hamburger fan.

• 47:06Adam Friedland?

  The best.

• 47:07Speaker 02

And, so I would say like, 2004 or something, where Eric and I were doing Awesome Show, and I was a fan of Neil's, went to go see him. He had relocated to LA, or he was living in LA. And went to go see him, like I would see anybody, and met him afterwards, and we knew some of the same people, and... Just kind of new, I think our bridge together was, his wife was Australian and my soon to be wife was Canadian and we were, you know, breaking the ice, talking about who are whatever.

• 47:43Adam Friedland?

  Foreigners.

• 47:44Speaker 02

  Foreigners.

• 47:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, getting them out.

• 47:46Speaker 02

And I wanted some advice on like immigration stuff, actually, for my wife, or for my potential wife, my fiance, whatever. What's that Dan Bongino clip where he's like, "I'm divorced from my wife," not divorced from my wife, but we're separated, not separated, but I'm not with my wife.

• 47:59Adam Friedland?

I love how red that guy gets.

• 48:01Speaker 02

  I know.

• 48:02Adam Friedland?

  His head is so big.

• 48:03Speaker 02

It's like Vinny, Vinny gets red like that.

• 48:05Adam Friedland?

I guess that was a bad question, how'd you make it red?

• 48:07Speaker 02

  No, it's fine.

• 48:08Adam Friedland?

  I'm sorry, dude.

• 48:09Speaker 02

But we just became friends, you know, and like, as you become friends with funny people, you tend to like goof around and...

• 48:16Adam Friedland?

That project has grown so mu-- I mean, like, you guys are...

• 48:20Speaker 02

And we still, we just shot something the other day for it, and I swear to you, like, I get the, I get the giggles with that show like nothing else, because of how funny Greg is and how funny I am when I'm in that character.

• 48:34Adam Friedland?

The basic premise is he's, he's a snob, but he's only seen like, like, he's a snob about Raiders of the Lost Ark.

• 48:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:41Adam Friedland?

He's a snob about just like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he considers himself like Criterion Collection, is that like...

• 48:48Speaker 02

Yeah, his, his takes are just like wildly stupid and...

• 48:52Adam Friedland?

  The Smurfs, the Smurfs clips.

• 48:53Speaker 02

Everything, all movies are equal, that's the one thing. The only way you could be a better movie than another movie, if, the only thing that makes a movie better is if it's longer, so he's like really in a runtime like spiral, death spiral.

• 49:07Adam Friedland?

You guys talk about runtimes so much.

• 49:09Speaker 02

And he's comparing runtimes and why is something, and then sequels versus prequels and if something's a remake, like, it's just garbage.

• 49:17Adam Friedland?

And then your characters, you just have never heard of movies, is that like...

• 49:20Speaker 02

I think I'm just like so preoccupied with other things in my life.

• 49:24Adam Friedland?

  You're like a narcissist?

• 49:25Speaker 02

A severe narcissist with like many problems, many physical and mental problems and...

• 49:33Speaker 02

And with rage issues and, you know, all sorts of man problems.

• 49:37Adam Friedland?

It's just, it is, it's, I just hope you guys never stop doing it.

• 49:41Speaker 02

I don't see a way to stop, like, we just enjoy it so much.

• 49:44Adam Friedland?

  It kinda is your opus.

• 49:46Speaker 02

I would, I would, I would think that's for the historians to determine, but, but yes, we, you can do it super affordably. You, I, it's a, I enjoy everybody involved so much. Ernato Nacola, who we write it with and direct, he directs it. And, I mean, again, like, you would shot something the other day, and I was like crying, laughing halfway through it, just, like, why would you stop doing something that makes you that happy?

• 50:11Adam Friedland?

I can't imagine, like, it'd be so hard not to break.

• 50:14Speaker 02

Oh, I break, and so it's.

• 50:16Adam Friedland?

He's so good at that character.

• 50:18Speaker 02

He does a thing that we've talked about for years, which, and I do it too, but if, because a lot of it's so improvisational, if you get into this drone where you start talking, and you're just talking for a while, and you're going on and on about something, and you're waiting, you're just like, wrap it up, because if you don't, if you're gonna laugh, you're gonna spoil a minute of footage, because, so you're just like, just, just get through it, but sometimes you just break.

• 50:42Adam Friedland?

There's a clip from the last season where we was talking about the, the Shalameh Wonka as, should be considered Wonka 4. Yeah. Yeah.

• 50:54Adam Friedland?

What did he say, there was something about like Wonk, like, oh.

• 50:57Speaker 02

  Wonka heads.

• 50:58Adam Friedland?

Why am I doing this right now?

• 50:59Speaker 02

Well, it's all independently produced now, the High Network, highnetwork.tv is where you can, for five bucks a month. And it's been working, you know, we get to make it for, for, without anybody else involved.

• 51:15Adam Friedland?

You've been doing music, at a certain point, like, you, like, released sincere music.

• 51:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:21Adam Friedland?

  And like.

• 51:22Speaker 02

Making all the, irony boys very uncomfortable.

• 51:25Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah, what was that, like, is, is it like Dylan, like Royal Albert Hall?

• 51:31Speaker 02

  Better than Dylan.

• 51:32Adam Friedland?

No, not the music, but it's just like.

• 51:34Speaker 02

  Just the feeling of it.

• 51:35Adam Friedland?

Seeing those clips of like the people being like, I came here for fucking fuck, folk concert, yeah, it's just like you. They're like mad about it guitars.

• 51:44Speaker 02

So mad. I love that stuff. Hey, Bob, we've talked about this through over the phone. But he is my, one of my guiding lights.

• 51:54Adam Friedland?

  He's my favorite.

• 51:55Speaker 02

And that was always, when I was thinking about making that shift or, you know, I mean, this all starts with you just sitting around, for me at least, writing music because I like doing it. And when something comes up that's like not funny, the decision is like, do I pursue this or do I abandon it?

• 52:13Adam Friedland?

Is there, is that, was that stressful at first?

• 52:16Speaker 02

No, no. I thought it was cool. I thought it was like, this is an exciting thing to try to do.

• 52:21Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 52:22Speaker 02

Because I never, I think I got to a place where I was forty and had gotten married and had a kid and was like, alright, I'm like living life. I'm not just like all about the goofs in my personal life.

• 52:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 52:41Speaker 02

And maybe I have things to say or a perspective that's not all clowning around.

• 52:46Adam Friedland?

I think, I'm sorry, I cut you off.

• 52:48Speaker 02

No, but that's alright. I mean, but looking at Dylan and being like, oh, that guy didn't give a shit. He just did what he wanted. He zigged and zagged and like

• 52:56Adam Friedland?

  Correct.

• 52:56Speaker 02

Tried shit and wasn't really worried about it. Now, maybe he was worried about it. He never talks about it, but it didn't look like that. So I just, and I had enough people around me that like, serious music, music people that were like very encouraging and supportive. So I, you know, I continue to do it because I'd get pleasure out of doing it.

• 53:19Adam Friedland?

I guess what I'm like probably projecting onto your decision to do that is that there is kind of a, like you can insulate your, your feelings through irony, right?

• 53:32Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 53:33Adam Friedland?

So like, someone could be like, this sucks. And you're like, it's supposed to be bad, right? But like, releasing music that's so sincere is scarier, in my mind at least.

• 53:42Speaker 02

Yeah, there's nowhere to hide. I mean, but it's also like

• 53:44Adam Friedland?

Plus, music's just better than comedy. So like, it would be like, I would want to do a good job. For this, I'm like, you know, I've pooped my pants and stuff.

• 53:52Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, I thought the interesting thing was like, can you do both? Can you go back and forth whenever you want?

• 54:00Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:01Speaker 02

And maybe some people have a hard time with that for me, you know?

• 54:04Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:05Speaker 02

But I planned to be doing this for a long time, you know?

• 54:08Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:09Speaker 02

In the biz of making, I was literally gonna say in the biz of making show.

• 54:14Adam Friedland?

  That's right, baby.

• 54:14Speaker 02

  It's so gross, right?

• 54:15Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:16Speaker 02

You know, like, I'm a lifer and I plan to live for a long time, so I've got some designs on how to do that. Medical things that we're gonna be talking about very strongly.

• 54:26Adam Friedland?

  What have you been doing?

• 54:27Speaker 02

  But the weights.

• 54:30Adam Friedland?

The weights, yeah. You probably get 140 years.

• 54:33Speaker 02

I always, I mean, we talked about Andy Kaufman before, but it's like, don't you think like Andy Kaufman got out early?

• 54:38Adam Friedland?

  Cause cancer?

• 54:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:40Speaker 02

So like, if he's like 48 and he's like still going on Letterman, doing like weird guys.

• 54:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 54:48Speaker 02

  You might be like, alright.

• 54:50Adam Friedland?

  It, yeah.

• 54:51Speaker 02

It'll play itself out a little bit.

• 54:53Adam Friedland?

We kind of felt that we, I was, we did Cum Town before this and.

• 54:56Speaker 02

  What's that?

• 54:57Adam Friedland?

For the last like four or five years, we just like.

• 55:00Speaker 02

  And now what's that?

• 55:02Adam Friedland?

It was a, it was a podcast.

• 55:04Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 55:05Adam Friedland?

  For a.

• 55:06Speaker 02

  Like WTF or?

• 55:08Adam Friedland?

Pretty much like that, yeah. But like, yeah, we, for the last of six years, for the last four years, we're like, oh, we're gonna do this crap again. It was like.

• 55:16Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:16Adam Friedland?

A little bit like, what if, you know, Elvis Presley was Chinese? It would go a little something like this.

• 55:22Speaker 02

  Right.

• 55:23Adam Friedland?

These guys loved it, but it was just like, it felt like.

• 55:27Speaker 02

You could, you could play the, you could, you figure out what's working and then it's the balance of how much do I continue to, continue to play into what's working? Versus like stretching and trying new things and.

• 55:39Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 55:39Speaker 02

But so you've made, you've also, have you?

• 55:42Adam Friedland?

  I had really.

• 55:43Speaker 02

You've been navigating like a, a journey of the sincere to some degree?

• 55:47Adam Friedland?

This show feels like the first time I've ever tried, to be honest.

• 55:50Speaker 02

Right, because you're, like, tried it, tried just doing anything, right?

• 55:53Adam Friedland?

Cause it's scary. It's scary, yeah. It's like if something sucks, then it'll hurt your feelings if you worked really hard on it.

• 56:00Speaker 02

But people seem to like where you were. Where are you going, right? Do you have people that are like, uh, this sucks? Because I, why don't you go back to, you know, like, being offensive for the, for the yucks?

• 56:12Adam Friedland?

  No, maybe, but I-

• 56:13Speaker 02

But you don't pay attention to that.

• 56:14Adam Friedland?

At this point, I don't pay attention. If my friends like it, I like, I'm happy.

• 56:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:18Adam Friedland?

And my dad can watch it now.

• 56:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:21Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 56:21Speaker 02

  He's proud of you.

• 56:21Adam Friedland?

And he's becoming a little bit of a stage mother about it, so a little bit annoying.

• 56:24Speaker 02

Well, I'm, let me send a personal message to your dad, who's watching right now.

• 56:28Adam Friedland?

  Fuck off.

• 56:29Speaker 02

Adam, what's your name? What's his name?

• 56:32Adam Friedland?

(singing) Take a look at my life, I'm a lot like you. I'm not like him at all.

• 56:37Speaker 02

  What's his name?

• 56:38Adam Friedland?

  I'm, uh, Max.

• 56:40Speaker 02

  Max?

• 56:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 56:41Speaker 02

Let me speak to you for a second, Max.

• 56:43Adam Friedland?

  Careful.

• 56:43Speaker 02

Your son, Adam, met me with a gay man at his apartment 12 years ago.

• 56:49Adam Friedland?

Uh huh. You and the gay guy?

• 56:52Speaker 02

  James Adomian.

• 56:53Adam Friedland?

  Uh huh.

• 56:53Speaker 02

Openly gay, proudly gay. And Adam was such a fan of mine, I inspired who he is to this day.

• 57:01Adam Friedland?

  Not much, actually.

• 57:02Speaker 02

  And-

• 57:02Adam Friedland?

  A little bit.

• 57:03Speaker 02

I'm here to tell you that he's made good on that by having his hero come on his little podcast.

• 57:08Adam Friedland?

Sarah, Sarah Squirm is not on the show yet, so.

• 57:11Speaker 02

But he's a good son, and you should be proud of him. And if there are any allegations coming out about him, I was unaware of these allegations before I came in the studio.

• 57:21Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 57:23Adam Friedland?

  You heard?

• 57:26Speaker 02

Do you have anything coming out? Cause these people, all the time, are coming, coming out with bad stuff, you know?

• 57:33Adam Friedland?

  No, I never-

• 57:33Speaker 02

  I always feel like-

• 57:34Adam Friedland?

I never had the gumption to do anything bad.

• 57:37Speaker 02

You're right. Are you a single man?

• 57:39Adam Friedland?

  No, I'm engaged.

• 57:40Speaker 02

  Oh, you are?

• 57:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 57:40Speaker 02

Okay, where's the ring? You don't wear an engagement ring like a, like a man should?

• 57:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah. No, I don't. I, I, I never actually wanna wear a ring.

• 57:50Speaker 02

  Really?

• 57:50Adam Friedland?

Cause I don't like my hands.

• 57:51Speaker 02

I think it's the only reason I got married. I like the idea of having a, having a ring on.

• 57:54Adam Friedland?

  You're like, I'm like Depp.

• 57:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:56Adam Friedland?

  It's like a Depp style.

• 57:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:58Adam Friedland?

Like a Criss Angel kinda Depp kinda rings guy. Did you ever consider being a rings guy when you moved to Hollywood?

• 58:05Speaker 02

Get a bunch of rings and stuff?

• 58:06Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 58:07Speaker 02

  No.

• 58:08Adam Friedland?

  No.

• 58:08Speaker 02

I don't have, do you have any tattoos?

• 58:10Adam Friedland?

  No.

• 58:11Speaker 02

  Do you have any piercings?

• 58:13Adam Friedland?

  I had an earring.

• 58:13Speaker 02

  Oh, you did?

• 58:14Adam Friedland?

Yeah. To, but I took it out one, one night.

• 58:18Speaker 02

I could see a little, the remnants of it.

• 58:19Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 58:20Speaker 02

  Very embarrassing.

• 58:20Adam Friedland?

It's pretty embarrassing, yeah. I thought, I thought it was cool, actually, but I thought, um, yeah, I, I kinda wanna talk about, like-

• 58:31Adam Friedland?

I don't know, I've heard you speak about like where you've seen comedy go in the last couple of years and.

• 58:36Speaker 02

You're gonna be like Mark Norman again. Oh, okay.

• 58:43Speaker 02

Where did I see it go?

• 58:45Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I mean like you deal with it a lot in office hours like, you know, you do it sort of in the sense of like parody, like that Rogan parody and then, you know, you did the Mar parody, which was so funny.

• 58:56Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 58:58Adam Friedland?

But like, does it suck? Do you think it sucks now?

• 59:02Speaker 02

  You know it does.

• 59:03Adam Friedland?

But it's always kind of sucked, no?

• 59:04Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 59:05Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 59:06Speaker 02

Well, sure, I guess, I mean, I guess the thing that's changed from my perspective, I mean, yeah, comedy, when I was in the 80s and 90s, there was like 90% kind of middle of the road crap that was filling time or was fine. It wasn't for me. But then like, you know, 10% of the time Norm MacDonald would come up there or somebody like that and you'd be like, this is crazy, this is great, like, I love this guy, like, so I'm always gonna have that kind of, I guess, refined, or like, I love comedy so much that I don't accept stuff that's just hacky. But I also don't mind, I mean, but it's also my definition of that.

• 59:46Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 59:47Speaker 02

So there's that whole thing of just like personal preference and there's, you know, comedians that are playing to a wide audience is generally not gonna be for me. But it's not that it's terrible, but I think it's.

• 1:00:00Adam Friedland?

It's a hipster, it's kind of hipsters, to say that.

• 1:00:03Speaker 02

There's plenty of the hipsters stuff that isn't for me either.

• 1:00:07Adam Friedland?

There's definitely stuff that's for a wide audience that you like. Norm was pretty wide.

• 1:00:11Speaker 02

That's true, but, again, I mean, some of these guys break through and they can, like the Beatles were very, were incredibly innovative and crazy, but they were also hugely popular.

• 1:00:23Adam Friedland?

  Sure.

• 1:00:24Speaker 02

  Right?

• 1:00:25Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:26Speaker 02

So some things are great and popular.

• 1:00:27Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:28Speaker 02

But most things are just either popular or great. Maybe that's one way of thinking about it. Easier for your.

• 1:00:34Adam Friedland?

No, I just, I think that like, you know, you could also have crap that has fewer fans too, right?

• 1:00:39Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 1:00:40Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:40Speaker 02

  Well, most things-

• 1:00:41Adam Friedland?

I don't think the amount of people that-

• 1:00:42Speaker 02

I would say most things are crap that nobody knows about.

• 1:00:45Adam Friedland?

  I don't think that you-

• 1:00:46Speaker 02

  Most things that are made.

• 1:00:48Adam Friedland?

I don't think that anything that's being created is defined by like the size of the audience. I think it's just, is it good or bad, right?

• 1:00:55Speaker 02

Well, it's all, it isn't, it's just all personal preference.

• 1:00:59Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 1:00:59Speaker 02

What do you, what do you, what do you actually like?

• 1:01:01Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:03Speaker 02

What makes you entertained, or happy, or thought provoking, or... But then, I mean, the real, I mean, other, I wouldn't probably care, except that these guys are now all like dipping into social issues and political issues and-

• 1:01:16Adam Friedland?

It kinda feels like they're becoming like Kate McKinnon in SNL, like, but it's the right wing version of it.

• 1:01:22Speaker 02

Yeah, and it's, but it feels a little more hypocritical or something, because they're coming from this, hey, we're just asking questions. I just, you know, and-

• 1:01:33Adam Friedland?

It's also just not funny, too.

• 1:01:35Speaker 02

  It's boring.

• 1:01:36Adam Friedland?

You grew up listening to Stern?

• 1:01:37Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:01:38Adam Friedland?

Do you think there was any influence on like the casting that you guys did, like, from the Whack Pack?

• 1:01:42Speaker 02

Absolutely. Those, yeah, I mean, the Whack Pack-

• 1:01:45Adam Friedland?

You had a high pitched Eric, right?

• 1:01:47Speaker 02

Never had, that was one of our rules, was like, don't poach from that squad.

• 1:01:52Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:01:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:53Adam Friedland?

You had too much reverence for it.

• 1:01:55Speaker 02

Yeah, that was his domain, and it felt like, we got organically, you know, people came into our world kind of organically. Somebody would come in, it was like a small character, and we'd be like, that would be a great host of a kid's TV show or something, you know?

• 1:02:09Adam Friedland?

In retrospect, do you ever feel like, oh, this guy's just, you know, a little bit?

• 1:02:13Speaker 02

  A little bit, yeah, I mean, I think there's-

• 1:02:15Adam Friedland?

But it's still, it's so funny still, but like-

• 1:02:17Speaker 02

At the time, you know, there was very, this was 20 years ago, or something like that, 15, 10 years ago, 15, whatever it was. We weren't thinking about like, you know, we weren't thinking about anything, except what we thought was funny, and-

• 1:02:31Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:31Speaker 02

On the set, we always tried to be fun, we tried to be, you know- Respectful and polite and we knew we were trying to make something very strange and disturbing and so that would push, you know, we'd bring in people and tell them to say crazy shit and they were pleased, happy to do it. Everybody was thrilled to work and do something weird and.

• 1:02:57Adam Friedland?

You worked with Tommy Wiseau, right?

• 1:02:59Speaker 02

Yeah, one day, one day with Tommy.

• 1:03:02Adam Friedland?

  What was it like?

• 1:03:03Speaker 02

I mean, he's an interesting guy. Smart guy.

• 1:03:07Adam Friedland?

  Smart guy.

• 1:03:08Speaker 02

Really talented guy. He was kind of a weirdo.

• 1:03:11Adam Friedland?

The room fucking, when I was in college, we, we were the perfect demo for it. It kind of broke our brands.

• 1:03:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:18Adam Friedland?

I watched it like 10,000 times.

• 1:03:21Speaker 02

I watched it many times. It was, we were just starting to make our stuff when, when we were made aware of that show or we were like, you know, done Tom Goes with the Mayor probably.

• 1:03:31Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:32Speaker 02

But, um, yeah, I mean, we came in and, you know, we, we fucked around with him a little bit for sure, like.

• 1:03:37Adam Friedland?

  How could you not?

• 1:03:38Speaker 02

Couldn't resist. Like, I think our bit with him was like, let's make him the director of that episode and just do whatever. What we really wanted to do was let him try, like, create the vacuum for him to do what he does. But he wanted, in all fairness, like, and I understand, he wanted the, he wanted, like, real production, he wanted the infrastructure of a real TV show.

• 1:04:05Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:06Speaker 02

But we were like, but if we give you that, then it's, you're not going to get what you are so good at making.

• 1:04:12Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 1:04:13Speaker 02

So you can't, it's like the quantum physics thing about like, as soon as you observe something at a quantum level, it changes, so you can't really control.

• 1:04:23Adam Friedland?

I know, yeah. I say that all the time.

• 1:04:25Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, look, look, look, I mean.

• 1:04:26Adam Friedland?

  About the room especially.

• 1:04:29Speaker 02

But, so, we, we, we kind of played with the idea of working with him in some way more.

• 1:04:35Adam Friedland?

Yeah, did it feel bad afterwards? You were like, it wasn't as, as cool as we thought. I feel like it was, it was just, it sounds to me like you're saying it was just a drag to meet this guy.

• 1:04:44Speaker 02

No, it was not a drag. It was very interesting.

• 1:04:46Adam Friedland?

  Were you laughing a lot?

• 1:04:47Speaker 02

I like being around eccentric weirdos.

• 1:04:50Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:50Speaker 02

Whatever you want to, that's the thing. We start, you go down, you pulled the thread of like, what do you, what do you mean by weirdo?

• 1:04:55Adam Friedland?

  Right.

• 1:04:56Speaker 02

And then you go, well, I may be that person. You don't know what their background is, you don't know if they had some kind of, you know.

• 1:05:03Adam Friedland?

I guess it's like, does someone have, I guess the threshold is probably, does someone have a developmental disorder?

• 1:05:08Speaker 02

Yes, and I would be much more.

• 1:05:10Adam Friedland?

As a teenager, it was, I was listening to Howard and it was like.

• 1:05:14Speaker 02

Exactly, and my position on that is probably, is evolved and it's not something I would want to do anymore. But at the time, it was what everybody, not everybody, but it didn't feel like, oh, this is, this is wrong. You know, it just felt like, these are interesting weirdos that I want to put on TV and treat like they're celebrities or something. You know, it was like.

• 1:05:38Adam Friedland?

And also, LA is filled with just like those kind of people with headshots and desperate.

• 1:05:43Speaker 02

  Yeah, desperate, maybe.

• 1:05:44Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:45Speaker 02

Or just like, I don't know, just people that wouldn't get cast in a lot of other things. But I grew up like, not only Howard Stern, but, I mean, a lot of, like, the Coen Brothers or Woody Allen movies or a lot of, like, there were just always interesting people in those movies that felt like, sort of outsider types.

• 1:06:05Adam Friedland?

  Fellini-esque.

• 1:06:06Speaker 02

  Fellini-esque.

• 1:06:07Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:08Speaker 02

So, that's where we were coming from and we were, you know, just trying stuff.

• 1:06:14Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:14Speaker 02

When things worked, you'd do more of it.

• 1:06:17Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I, I listened to a lot of Howard growing up and I've been like, listening to like, an archive of all of Trump's appearances.

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

  Oh, right.

• 1:06:25Adam Friedland?

Recently, and it's, first of all, I mean, it's pretty obvious, it's so funny, he's the president. I mean, like, it's, like, it's crazy, he's the president.

• 1:06:32Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:06:33Adam Friedland?

But like, second of all, it's like. It kind of is, in retrospect, seeing Howard shift to sincerity, like.

• 1:06:42Speaker 02

  People hate it, right?

• 1:06:43Adam Friedland?

I want, people fucking hate it, you know? And I wonder, like, to what extent he feels like partially responsible for, like, prompting that, like, or like, kind of propping him up and like, you know, helping.

• 1:06:55Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, he was one of many that did.

• 1:06:57Adam Friedland?

It's not, he didn't get Trump elected, obviously.

• 1:07:00Speaker 02

And he was pretty, I mean, what, I remember the Stern, the, right after he got elected the first time, that period is maybe the weirdest period of all time, because they didn't know what to say. They were lost.

• 1:07:12Adam Friedland?

  On Howard, yeah.

• 1:07:13Speaker 02

On Howard, from what I remember. "Well, he's the president, so, yeah, anyway, what else is going on?" You know, it was like that. It was very like.

• 1:07:22Adam Friedland?

And he's like, "The Voice is on tonight." He like loves talking about The Voice.

• 1:07:26Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. I, there's a, there's a, there's stuff about him that I love, and I don't really listen to that much anymore, to be honest with you.

• 1:07:34Adam Friedland?

I haven't really listened since high school, but, yeah.

• 1:07:37Speaker 02

  Since high school, really?

• 1:07:38Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. Because we would be late to first period, because we would just like want to stay in the car and listen to it.

• 1:07:43Speaker 02

What years would those, is that?

• 1:07:45Adam Friedland?

  Those were like, graduate 2005.

• 1:07:47Speaker 02

  That's arty years?

• 1:07:48Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, arty years. The best.

• 1:07:50Speaker 02

Well, I'm a Jackie the Joke Man guy, myself.

• 1:07:52Adam Friedland?

I mean, I've, I've gone back through now with the.

• 1:07:56Speaker 02

Wait, no, that's bad Jackie, sorry.

• 1:07:59Adam Friedland?

But I did, like, I, I did love it so mu, like, I got really sad, like, and emo, we're not sad, but I got really emotional when Beat, like, went back on recently, and there was like this tenderness.

• 1:08:10Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:08:10Adam Friedland?

And like this, like, love there.

• 1:08:12Speaker 02

  An old pal.

• 1:08:13Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, it was.

• 1:08:14Speaker 02

But I love Richard and Sal. I think they do great.

• 1:08:16Adam Friedland?

Sal's prank calls are the best.

• 1:08:18Speaker 02

I would say Richard and Sal's prank calls.

• 1:08:20Adam Friedland?

  Richard, sorry. Yeah, yeah.

• 1:08:23Speaker 02

They're very creative, and, you know, I like when Howard's yelling at Gary about something petty, and, you know.

• 1:08:32Adam Friedland?

One of the ugliest guys of all time, Bob O'Bowley.

• 1:08:35Speaker 02

  Gary Del Bate?

• 1:08:36Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, sorry.

• 1:08:37Speaker 02

I don't like to comment on people's looks.

• 1:08:38Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, alright.

• 1:08:40Speaker 02

It's just a better way to live.

• 1:08:41Adam Friedland?

He is a legendary first pitch at a Met game.

• 1:08:44Speaker 02

  I've seen that, great shot.

• 1:08:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:46Speaker 02

You can't, I mean, I don't, I don't like talking about people's looks, but you gotta think he's got bad breath.

• 1:08:52Adam Friedland?

And a hog, just an absolutely packing.

• 1:08:54Speaker 02

  Big wang.

• 1:08:55Adam Friedland?

Huge dick. Who, you live in Hollywood, who's, who's got the biggest in town?

• 1:09:03Speaker 02

Well, I've watched these pornographic films, some of those guys.

• 1:09:10Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:13Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:14Speaker 02

I don't know where they live, though. I'm actually having a terrific time, by the way, and I know you have to cut this shit down, but I think you should, do you have a Patreon? You could put the whole thing up for, you know, how are you paying for this? State of Israel. State of Israel.

• 1:09:28Adam Friedland?

  Gellman's guy.

• 1:09:35Adam Friedland?

Yeah, I guess, I guess like the last, the last thing I would really ask is like, I guess like what, what I really find inspiring is like that you, that you really got bored. It seemed, and tell, correct me if I'm wrong, like you-

• 1:09:52Speaker 02

  At what point?

• 1:09:53Adam Friedland?

Well, you just like wanting to put out music is like, like, and like, I don't know. I think that that's like very cool to me.

• 1:10:02Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 1:10:03Adam Friedland?

I suppose, because like it must get tiring to like have a niche that you have to fill for people and stuff.

• 1:10:10Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, I think when I have a creative partner, like you become, you get absorbed into the identity of that partnership.

• 1:10:17Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:18Speaker 02

Into that thing, and for you it was Come Town, for me it was Tim and Eric, and then I'm like, well, who am I? Like what am, who am I in that? Or who am I outside of that?

• 1:10:28Adam Friedland?

  Did you guys break up?

• 1:10:29Speaker 02

No, we're still friends and we write, we're trying to write a movie and, you know, thinking about doing stuff, but the, the, it's not like that white hot, like we, I mean, we did a lot, we made a lot of shit, you know, we made a lot of horrible shit.

• 1:10:45Adam Friedland?

Do you think it's a product of youth? Like feeling like more free to like make horrible shit, you know?

• 1:10:53Speaker 02

Well, no, we just were like, we were in the middle of something and there was the only thing we had going. It was the only thing in our lives.

• 1:11:01Adam Friedland?

And it was also your world, too.

• 1:11:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:11:03Adam Friedland?

You had like a whole squad of guys and then you kind of a self-contained world.

• 1:11:07Speaker 02

And then that comes to an end.

• 1:11:09Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:10Speaker 02

As it naturally did, not out of any kind of strife and not out of any kind of like conflict.

• 1:11:15Adam Friedland?

You said it was your, when you had a kid, you said it was your child ruined everything.

• 1:11:17Speaker 02

Yes, he, well, we had agreed, if we were gonna do this, we wouldn't have children.

• 1:11:21Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:11:22Speaker 02

  And then I disobeyed him.

• 1:11:23Adam Friedland?

I thought you guys said that you can't, you're not gonna get married until gay people can get married.

• 1:11:30Speaker 02

But things come to an end and that like I want to make stuff with him and he wants to make stuff with me, but it will be probably very different than what we're not going to go like the band Pavement or something where you're like, well, those are the six albums Pavement made.

• 1:11:45Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:45Speaker 02

And we're gonna probably tour and we're gonna do stuff maybe together, but it's not, we're not gonna do another Pavement album or the Pixies or something or Talking Heads.

• 1:11:54Adam Friedland?

So something like more traditional narrative?

• 1:11:56Speaker 02

No. It's more of like a.

• 1:12:01Adam Friedland?

  Kill Tony?

• 1:12:04Speaker 02

Well, elaborate pranks, I will say elaborate, very.

• 1:12:07Adam Friedland?

  Jackass style?

• 1:12:09Speaker 02

More like in the Fielder realm, more abstract, more long form, very cerebral. These are long plays, like I don't want, this is part of it. That's all I'm gonna say. This right here is part of it.

• 1:12:23Adam Friedland?

  Really?

• 1:12:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, you're in the show.

• 1:12:25Adam Friedland?

You got hate, you got hate in your heart?

• 1:12:27Speaker 02

I've had, do I have what?

• 1:12:30Adam Friedland?

You got hate in your gut?

• 1:12:32Speaker 02

  Is that a reference?

• 1:12:34Adam Friedland?

No, I don't know. Yeah, yeah.

• 1:12:36Speaker 02

No, I don't know what we'll do. We've got a couple of things that we have plans for, but if we, if it doesn't happen, I'd be, I'm proud of what we've done.

• 1:12:45Adam Friedland?

Will it culminate in Donald Trump going to prison?

• 1:12:49Speaker 02

Let's just say the third act of our movie is a little bit something that happened in Butler, Pennsylvania, but a little more, I'd say it's a little more of an accurate depiction.

• 1:13:00Adam Friedland?

That nerd, the nerd looked like Elizabeth Warren a lot, don't you think?

• 1:13:05Speaker 02

The shooter? Give me a break.

• 1:13:11Adam Friedland?

Give me a break, dude. So false flag.

• 1:13:14Speaker 02

  I want to end on.

• 1:13:16Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:13:16Speaker 02

  A reading from Paul.

• 1:13:19Adam Friedland?

  Simon?

• 1:13:21Speaker 02

No. Did I send, I sent you this clip of, bring it back to Jerry Lewis, I sent you this clip of him on the.

• 1:13:28Adam Friedland?

  Joan Rivers.

• 1:13:29Speaker 02

Joan Rivers Show, did you watch it?

• 1:13:30Adam Friedland?

Yeah, yeah. It's pretty intense. Talking about beating his son?

• 1:13:33Speaker 02

Yeah, he tells the story, he says, he's on with a child psychologist. And this is 1968 or something like that. And the child psychologist is introducing a fairly novel concept of like not beating your kids. You know? Like, love your kids and be a positive influence.

• 1:13:50Adam Friedland?

Did your parents watch that or no?

• 1:13:52Speaker 02

  Did they watch that clip?

• 1:13:53Adam Friedland?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:13:54Speaker 02

  I don't know, probably not.

• 1:13:55Adam Friedland?

  Mine didn't.

• 1:13:56Speaker 02

No, well, my parents never hit me, but.

• 1:13:58Adam Friedland?

  Oh, never mind.

• 1:14:00Speaker 02

Jerry Lewis said, well, let me tell you my perspective.

• 1:14:02Adam Friedland?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:03Speaker 02

  My son, Gary.

• 1:14:06Adam Friedland?

  Delibota?

• 1:14:07Speaker 02

Gary Lewis, from Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Which is true.

• 1:14:10Adam Friedland?

That's really his son's name? That's so funny.

• 1:14:12Speaker 02

Came home with some grades that weren't, let's do it without the sniff.

• 1:14:16Adam Friedland?

  Sorry.

• 1:14:19Adam Friedland?

  I didn't take Claritson today.

• 1:14:21Speaker 02

My son Gary came home with grades that were below my expectations for him.

• 1:14:28Speaker 02

And he knew that he did not live up to my expectations. And he came into my office and I have a belt. I have a big western belt.

• 1:14:39Adam Friedland?

  Nice.

• 1:14:40Speaker 02

And I took the belt off and he pulled his pants down and I gave him a whack for each grade that disappointed me. And they left three fairly sizable welts on his rear.

• 1:14:55Adam Friedland?

  That's hot.

• 1:14:56Speaker 02

And I said, Gary, you've taken your punishment. Now go up to your room and stay there until I say you can get out.

• 1:15:03Adam Friedland?

  Gary Lewis.

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

Gary Lewis, from Gary Lewis and the Playboys. Now, I went up, we have an intercom system in our house. So I can listen in when they're sleeping and whatnot. And I went over there to listen, to hear him cry. And it's okay to cry, by the way. I always say that real men cry, sissies don't.

• 1:15:26Adam Friedland?

  That's true.

• 1:15:27Speaker 02

And I listened, and his mommy came in. Because, you know, we have the relationship where when his mom is down on him, I will go and be with them, but when I'm down on the kids, she'll go and be with them and let them know that we're not ganging up on them. And I listened in, expecting to hear my son crying. But I only heard this. I heard him say, she said, "It's okay to cry." And he said, "No, I don't have to cry. I know that daddy did that to me because he loves me."

• 1:16:00Adam Friedland?

Why do the French think that's funny? Why is he the best American comedian to them?

• 1:16:07Speaker 02

He's a bad, bad guy. Good news is, he's passed on.

• 1:16:11Adam Friedland?

Rod and hell Jerry Lewis, thanks a lot.

• 1:16:14Speaker 02

  Great to be here.
