Hello and welcome to Table Manners, which you can now listen to and watch on YouTube. Hi Mum.

• 3:06Speaker 06

  Hi darling.

  We're back.

• 3:09Speaker 06

  We're back.

• 3:09Jessie Ware?

  With a bang.

• 3:10Speaker 06

  After a lovely summer.

• 3:11Jessie Ware?

  Yep, still got the tans.

• 3:13Speaker 06

  Still got the tans darling.

• 3:14Jessie Ware?

That long lasting six week tan.

• 3:15Speaker 06

  Yeah, that long six, sorry.

• 3:17Jessie Ware?

  Gradual tan that was, yeah.

• 3:19Speaker 06

  Darling, six weeks away.

• 3:20Jessie Ware?

  Yep, looking glorious, looking rested.

• 3:23Speaker 06

Yeah, rested, met lots of people who love the podcast.

• 3:26Jessie Ware?

  That's nice.

• 3:26Speaker 06

  In the sea.

• 3:27Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous, in the sea.

• 3:28Speaker 06

  Always at Limanari.

• 3:30Jessie Ware?

I love that you barely get in the sea, so let's say sunbed, let's be real Mum.

• 3:34Speaker 06

  On the sunbed.

• 3:35Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 3:35Speaker 06

  And in the sea.

• 3:36Jessie Ware?

Um, that's nice. Well, we feel refreshed and ready to welcome a huge star today.

• 3:42Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 3:43Jessie Ware?

  Season 18.

• 3:44Speaker 06

  Season 18.

• 3:45Jessie Ware?

So we decided to give you Reese Witherspoon, sure, no biggie. I am really excited to meet her because she is.

• 3:53Speaker 06

  Do you think she's little?

• 3:54Jessie Ware?

  Yes, I think so too.

• 3:56Speaker 06

Petite, should we say petite? L.

• 3:59Jessie Ware?

L, her name is Reese, but we love her for Elle Woods, don't we? Yeah, Reese Witherspoon, who is an Academy Award winner for playing June Carter in Walk the Line, business exec, producer, writer, founder of a big old book club.

• 4:13Speaker 06

In my very favourite TV show.

• 4:15Jessie Ware?

Which one's your favourite TV show?

• 4:16Speaker 06

  Morning Show.

• 4:16Jessie Ware?

Well, that's what she's coming on to talk about, which we're very excited to chat to her about. Yeah, Reese is over and we have her for lunch. You are on cooking duty today.

• 4:25Speaker 06

  Yes, I am.

• 4:26Jessie Ware?

  What have you made?

• 4:27Speaker 06

  Roast chicken.

• 4:28Jessie Ware?

Can I just quickly acknowledge that I had one of the best roast chickens of my life yesterday?

• 4:33Speaker 06

  Oh God.

• 4:33Jessie Ware?

Rochelle Canteen in East London, you can do no wrong. You are consistently excellent. I took my husband there for his birthday and it's just one of my favourite restaurants. I had a Sutton Hoo. Do you know Sutton Hoo is an area and it's apparently-

• 4:49Speaker 06

Sutton Hoo is where they did the excavation of the great big boat. Carey Mulligan was in the film.

• 4:54Jessie Ware?

Oh, well, I had a Sutton Hoo chicken.

• 4:57Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 4:57Jessie Ware?

And they did it. Oh, okay. It was out of this world.

• 5:02Speaker 06

  God.

• 5:02Jessie Ware?

  Anyway.

• 5:03Speaker 06

I hope it wasn't one of the ones that was left in the boat that they-

• 5:06Jessie Ware?

  I hope, well.

• 5:07Speaker 06

  That they excavated.

• 5:09Jessie Ware?

Well, so I'm all fired up for your roast chicken. So how are you doing your roast chicken today, Mum?

• 5:13Speaker 06

  Just roasted it.

• 5:14Jessie Ware?

  Oh, okay, cool.

• 5:15Speaker 06

  On a bed of vegetables.

• 5:16Jessie Ware?

  Which vegetables?

• 5:18Speaker 06

  Fennel.

• 5:18Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 5:19Speaker 06

  Carrot.

• 5:19Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 5:20Speaker 06

  Onion.

• 5:21Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 5:21Speaker 06

  Celery.

• 5:22Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 5:22Speaker 06

  And some garlic.

• 5:23Jessie Ware?

Gorgeous. And then you're making a little jus.

• 5:25Speaker 06

  A little jus.

• 5:26Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 5:27Speaker 06

Um, which tastes a bit salty, but it'll be fine.

• 5:29Jessie Ware?

Put your jam that you put, oh, the cranberry sauce or something.

• 5:32Speaker 06

  Yeah, I can do.

• 5:32Jessie Ware?

  Okay, great.

• 5:34Speaker 06

And I've done some steamed vegetables and you've done some-

• 5:39Jessie Ware?

  Just courgettes.

• 5:40Speaker 06

Courgettes with garlic and lemon. And we've also got some garlicky potatoes.

• 5:45Jessie Ware?

  Hope she likes garlic.

• 5:46Speaker 06

I hope she does too, Jessie.

• 5:48Jessie Ware?

We have been lucky enough, thank you, Apple, to watch a bit of the new season of the morning, the morning show.

• 5:54Speaker 06

You see, you've indulged yourself. I only allowed myself to because it starts tomorrow and I want to watch it on TV on the big screen.

• 6:05Jessie Ware?

That's really odd because surely they both, they stagger it, don't they, on Apple with these ones?

• 6:10Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I would go as far as to say I think it's one of the best seasons I've watched. It's really exciting and cutthroat.

• 6:20Jessie Ware?

And of course, Reese is starring in it with Jennifer Aniston, but also Bradley Jackson. But she's also an exec on it.

• 6:28Speaker 06

  Is she?

• 6:28Jessie Ware?

Yeah, she's her, it's her baby.

• 6:30Speaker 06

  It's so fabulous.

• 6:31Jessie Ware?

You know, you've seen Reese on the screen, but you've also seen some of the biggest TV shows and films. Big Little Lies.

• 6:39Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 6:40Jessie Ware?

Her and Nicole Kidman, I think, produced.

• 6:42Speaker 06

  Little Fires Everywhere.

• 6:43Jessie Ware?

Little Fires Everywhere. Daisy Jones and the Six.

• 6:46Speaker 06

  My favourite.

• 6:47Jessie Ware?

All, this is all her production company, Hello Sunshine. And so she's like a very-

• 6:52Speaker 06

  She must read a lot.

• 6:53Jessie Ware?

Yeah, she has the Reese's Book Club.

• 6:55Speaker 06

  What's she's reading this week?

• 6:56Jessie Ware?

Oh, we'll find out. Reese Witherspoon, coming up in Table manners.

• 7:09Jessie Ware?

Reese Witherspoon is here with us with a cup of tea and we're thrilled to have you.

• 7:14Speaker 07

  I love some PG Tips.

• 7:15Speaker 06

  Oh, you like PG Tips?

• 7:17Speaker 07

Well, I made a couple of movies here when I was a little, yeah, like a young woman and I got so obsessed with PG Tips. Because it's all they offer on set. That and some like old cookies.

• 7:28Speaker 06

You know, the advertisement for PG Tips was to be a chimpanzee. There used to be chimpanzees having tea parties. I've no idea, but that was the advertisement.

• 7:38Jessie Ware?

Not anymore. And I, he do like a little cookie in the afternoon, don't you?

• 7:42Speaker 07

  I do like a cookie.

• 7:43Jessie Ware?

Have you like sampled some British biscuit?

• 7:46Speaker 07

Every day, like a cookie, every day.

• 7:48Jessie Ware?

What's the cookie that you're going to find in your house?

• 7:51Speaker 07

My thirteen year old and I are determined to make the perfect chocolate chip cookie. So every day when he comes home from school, like every three days, we make a new batch of chocolate chip cookies. And we do it from a different recipe and a different book. And then we measure, is it more butter? Is it more sugar? What makes it a best cookie?

• 8:08Jessie Ware?

How near are you to perfecting the perfect chocolate chip cookie? And will you be coming out with a cookie? Yes, probably. It'll be the Hello Sunshine, it'll be the Sunny Cookie. Sure, surely.

• 8:19Speaker 07

I'm just going to make cookies and it's going to be a hobby. And it's not going to be a business because I'm learning my lesson. But everything is not a business.

• 8:27Jessie Ware?

It's hard when you're so good at it, right?

• 8:28Speaker 07

Some things are just a hobby.

• 8:30Speaker 06

But actually, even if you fail on the cookies, you eat the ones that you failed on.

• 8:35Speaker 07

  Yeah, that's true.

• 8:35Speaker 06

  It's a win-win situation.

• 8:37Speaker 07

Yeah. And there's science involved, you know?

• 8:40Speaker 06

  Of course there's science, yeah.

• 8:41Speaker 07

He likes the big crispy ones.

• 8:44Speaker 06

  Not the chewy?

• 8:45Speaker 07

No, I like chewy, dense and chewy. So mine have more flour and his have more butter.

• 8:50Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 8:52Jessie Ware?

  He a good cook?

• 8:53Speaker 07

He is, he just enjoys, um, well, he enjoys making food. My middle son loves cooking.

• 9:00Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 9:00Speaker 07

He's really good at making steaks and mainly steaks.

• 9:04Jessie Ware?

  Does he live with you?

• 9:06Speaker 07

No, he's in college. He's in his last year of college.

• 9:09Jessie Ware?

Oh goodness, that's like, how can you look twelve? Cause she was quite young when she had her first two, yeah.

• 9:16Speaker 07

I have a twenty six year old daughter. I know.

• 9:19Speaker 06

I was trying to work out how old your children were, cause you look so young.

• 9:23Speaker 07

Yes, I was very, very young.

• 9:25Speaker 06

You were very young when you had.

• 9:26Jessie Ware?

  Were you twenty three?

• 9:27Speaker 07

I was twenty three when I had my daughter, yeah.

• 9:29Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 9:29Speaker 07

Yeah. So I'm forty nine now, yeah. She's twenty six.

• 9:33Jessie Ware?

It must feel very diff- of course, but like having your son who's thirteen, you said?

• 9:38Speaker 07

  He's thirteen.

• 9:39Jessie Ware?

It must be a very different experience from when you were kind of on set. I've seen some of your Instagrams where it's like, you know, you were doing long hours. Those babies were coming with you and they were, you look like you're having a great time, but I'm sure that it was.

• 9:51Speaker 07

It was really hard, yeah. It was hard.

• 9:54Speaker 06

  You live in L A?

• 9:55Speaker 07

No, I live in Nashville, Tennessee.

• 9:57Speaker 06

  Oh, you live in Nashville?

• 9:58Speaker 07

Where my mom lives, my dad lives, and my brother, my niece.

• 10:01Speaker 06

And all your children are there?

• 10:02Speaker 07

Um, no, my daughter, my daughter lives by herself in L A.

• 10:06Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 10:07Speaker 07

And then my son lives in New York, cause he goes to school in New York. And then my littlest guy goes to school in Nashville.

• 10:13Jessie Ware?

So that's kind of perfect. You've got one in every kind of place that you need to be like, I mean, the morning show from the hours.

• 10:20Speaker 07

Yeah, I miss them. But, but I do shoot the morning show in L A. And so I get to see my daughter when I'm there.

• 10:25Jessie Ware?

It's not shot in New York?

• 10:27Speaker 07

Parts of it are shot in New York. So we probably do a month in New York and five months in L A.

• 10:33Jessie Ware?

I love Nashville and I have not been there enough. And, but I got, I got completely obsessed with that TV show Nashville as well. And then I was like, I just wanna be a country singer.

• 10:42Speaker 07

  It was really good.

• 10:43Jessie Ware?

  It's really good.

• 10:44Speaker 07

Yeah, the creator, Kelly Curry, is a friend of mine and she lives in Nashville too. So we just have the best dinner parties and.

• 10:50Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 10:51Speaker 07

  She's just so funny.

• 10:52Jessie Ware?

Okay, tell me about a, a typical Nashville dinner party. What's gonna be on the table?

• 10:59Speaker 07

  Oh, okay.

• 11:00Jessie Ware?

Is it still quite southern food?

• 11:02Speaker 07

I mean, I would say so. My grandma was a really great cook. So she kind of taught me how to roast everything, you know? Barbecue is a big deal in the south. But probably same stuff that you guys would make, like roast chicken and fish, you know?

• 11:19Jessie Ware?

Is the weather nice there at the moment?

• 11:21Speaker 07

Right now, yes, beautiful. It's really lovely in the fall. It's really lovely in the spring and.

• 11:27Jessie Ware?

  Hot in the summer.

• 11:28Speaker 07

It's unbearably hot in the summer. Like, you can barely breathe. It's so hot.

• 11:35Jessie Ware?

So where do you go in the summer to cool off?

• 11:37Speaker 07

Oh, well, you know, Wyoming or come here. I usually come here for a couple of weeks.

• 11:43Jessie Ware?

  You like Europe?

• 11:44Speaker 07

In the summer, yeah. Just it's cooler. Um, I know, and you guys probably think it's boiling hot, but it's not compared to Tennessee.

• 11:51Jessie Ware?

We thought it was so hot this year.

• 11:53Speaker 07

People will turn to me in July here and go, oh, so hot. I'm like, oh.

• 11:57Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 11:58Speaker 07

The hot, you don't know hot until you go to Nashville.

• 12:00Jessie Ware?

But we don't have A C everywhere. That's the thing. So we can't like control it. So we're. Poor Will Poulter was on the podcast last, in the summer when we were doing the last season. And we were dripping. Everyone was dripping. We all looked completely, it was quite disgusting, actually. He was lovely.

• 12:16Speaker 06

He was lovely. He was hot, though.

• 12:18Jessie Ware?

So he was hot in every sense of the word, yes.

• 12:22Speaker 07

Okay, you're really cute. My mom would do the same thing. She'd be like wink at me.

• 12:26Speaker 06

  Yeah. He was cute.

• 12:28Speaker 07

My mom has a total thing about that guy from Outlander.

• 12:32Jessie Ware?

  Which one?

• 12:32Speaker 07

  Do you know the Huguen?

• 12:35Jessie Ware?

I don't watch it. Should I watch it?

• 12:37Speaker 07

My mother says it's fantastic and very sexy.

• 12:40Speaker 06

  Kind of fantasy.

• 12:41Speaker 07

  It's fantasy.

• 12:42Jessie Ware?

It's supposed to be hot as well. Your mother, I bet your mom likes Bridgerton.

• 12:45Speaker 07

  Sam Huguen is his name.

• 12:47Speaker 06

Was he the one in? No, one day, Sam Hugh.

• 12:51Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 12:53Speaker 06

That was Sam Clapham, wasn't it?

• 12:54Jessie Ware?

That was, no, and he was in Daisy Jones and the Six.

• 12:57Speaker 07

  That's right.

• 12:58Jessie Ware?

  Which is fantastic.

• 12:59Speaker 06

  Oh, I loved it.

• 13:00Speaker 07

  Oh, thank you for watching.

• 13:02Speaker 06

  I loved it so much.

• 13:03Speaker 07

I love that show so much.

• 13:05Speaker 06

  Oh, I thought she was.

• 13:07Speaker 07

  Sublime.

• 13:07Speaker 06

  Sublime.

• 13:08Jessie Ware?

  Unbelievable.

• 13:09Speaker 07

And you know, Stevie Nicks like reached out and said, I want to meet Riley Keo. She was so good. It reminded me when I first started Fleetwood Mac. And so I got to facilitate them meeting in Nashville. And it was really one of the most special moments of my career.

• 13:24Speaker 06

  It was just so good.

• 13:26Speaker 07

Stevie told us all night long, her stories about Fleetwood Mac and her relationships and her love affairs. And just how everything about Daisy Jones reminded her of her.

• 13:37Speaker 06

Oh, it was like watching Fleetwood Mac, I think.

• 13:40Speaker 07

  It was amazing.

• 13:40Jessie Ware?

  Well.

• 13:41Speaker 07

While my dog sat on her lap and she like pet my dog and I was like.

• 13:44Speaker 06

Oh, my God, I'm dying. So what's your dog like?

• 13:47Speaker 07

  My dog is amazing.

• 13:49Speaker 06

  A Fittinelle dog?

• 13:50Speaker 07

  A what dog?

• 13:51Speaker 06

  What, a dog like?

• 13:52Speaker 07

  Oh, like Elwood's? No.

• 13:54Jessie Ware?

  Bit bigger.

• 13:55Speaker 07

It's a French Bulldog and she's little though. She never grew. So her name is Minnie.

• 14:00Speaker 06

  Oh, sweet.

• 14:01Speaker 07

She's black and white and she looks like a little tiny cow.

• 14:04Jessie Ware?

Oh, sweet. They're either bat pigs or cows, aren't they?

• 14:07Speaker 07

Oh, they're so cute. And she knows when she goes to work, I'm like, Minnie, we have to go to work. We're gonna do a social media post for Reese's Book Club today and she gets all ready and she's like, she literally poses. So she's like, she's like.

• 14:18Jessie Ware?

Work. Oh, works. Let's talk about Reese's Book Club because actually my university housemate actually got, one of her books got chosen.

• 14:27Speaker 07

  No way.

• 14:27Jessie Ware?

Before we were innocent, Ella Berman.

• 14:29Speaker 07

  Love it.

• 14:30Jessie Ware?

I know that you read a lot and you read with your grandma.

• 14:33Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 14:33Jessie Ware?

And she kind of would do the accents and the, the characters.

• 14:37Speaker 07

She would act it out for me.

• 14:38Jessie Ware?

Did you do that for your children?

• 14:39Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 14:40Jessie Ware?

Do they appreciate it? Because my children don't appreciate when I do the accents. They say, calm down.

• 14:44Speaker 07

See, it's taken them now into their twenties. They remember me reading in the character voices. And I have one very famous character with my children, which is, it's a Swedish narwhal. She's a Swedish narwhal.

• 14:57Jessie Ware?

  What, the like narwhal?

• 14:59Speaker 07

  She's a narwhal, yeah.

• 15:00Jessie Ware?

  What book was this?

• 15:01Speaker 07

  I don't know.

• 15:02Jessie Ware?

  You just were doing.

• 15:03Speaker 07

But I do, she's with this, the lilt.

• 15:07Speaker 06

  Please do the Swedish.

• 15:07Speaker 07

  No, I can't.

• 15:08Speaker 06

  No, you need to.

• 15:09Speaker 07

They do this Swedish narwhal and she comes to, she comes to visit the children. And I don't know, my children thought it was so fricking funny. So now they, you know, especially my little guy, always talks about the Swedish narwhal.

• 15:22Speaker 06

  See, my children damage your.

• 15:23Speaker 07

And I would make them laugh, like they thought it was really funny that I had these ridiculous voices. But it, it's actually what I remember the most about learning to read was that my grandmother did all the voices. And I thought she was so funny. And, you know, there's all these statistics about literacy rates and children are just dropping like crazy. Um, especially during COVID, it just turned into a total screen takeover. And a lot of kids weren't reading anymore for pleasure. And I think a lot of that starts with reading to young kids and making a ritual of it. Whether you reach them, you know, at night or just 20 minutes during the day. There used to be a program here in the UK called Read with Nans.

• 16:07Speaker 06

  What's that?

• 16:08Speaker 07

I don't know, but they need to bring it back. A friend of mine who, um, has this fantastic, um,

• 16:14Speaker 07

he, his name is Pierre Lagrange and he has this like early childhood reader program. Um, it's called Words, Mrs. Wordsmith.

• 16:22Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 16:22Speaker 07

And he was telling me they had this program here where Nans, they would go in and read to kids.

• 16:29Speaker 06

Yeah, we, we do that in school.

• 16:30Speaker 07

  You do?

• 16:31Speaker 06

Yeah, people go and there's help. I did.

• 16:33Speaker 07

  No, did you?

• 16:34Speaker 06

Yeah, I went to Honeywell. If you were a good parent, you went in, so you carried favor with all the teachers. So you went in and you sat in the class and would sit and hear the, cause the, the teachers only heard you read about 10 minutes a week. So they had to help us going in.

• 16:50Speaker 07

I just love this idea of, yeah, reading with Nans, cause.

• 16:53Speaker 06

Maybe you should add it to the book.

• 16:55Speaker 07

I'm thinking about trying to start a program or like a, like a series where. I don't know, where Nan's reads to little kids.

• 17:03Speaker 06

  Who recommends books to you?

• 17:05Speaker 07

Okay, so I have a team of um probably three people who read the books first. And they get them very early, like probably a year before they're published. And they all read it and then they decide whether or not they recommend it to me and then it goes to me.

• 17:21Jessie Ware?

So it's kind of like your own mini book club is like before.

• 17:25Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 17:25Jessie Ware?

Cause I've just started a book club with my girlfriends. I feel like I'm at that age. I'm forty, I'm gonna be forty one. It's like, it's time for a book club.

• 17:31Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 17:32Jessie Ware?

I saw romantic comedy is on the book club.

• 17:35Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 17:35Jessie Ware?

Which is one of my favorite books.

• 17:37Speaker 06

So favorite, when's it gonna be made into a film?

• 17:39Jessie Ware?

  Have you got the rights?

• 17:40Speaker 07

  We have the rights.

• 17:41Jessie Ware?

  Which makes sense.

• 17:42Speaker 07

  We have a script.

• 17:43Jessie Ware?

  Great. Who's playing the girl?

• 17:45Speaker 07

  We don't know yet.

• 17:46Jessie Ware?

Can we put in some of those people?

• 17:49Speaker 06

  Ashling B.

• 17:50Jessie Ware?

  Ashling B, she's a comedian, Irish.

• 17:52Speaker 06

She wanted to talk, she didn't know who had got the rights and she was on the podcast, she said, we all had just read it. It was just after summer, I think.

• 18:02Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 18:02Speaker 06

And she said, I love it so much and I'm perfect for the part.

• 18:06Jessie Ware?

So we're just throwing her in the ring. Ashling B, she's in films with Paul Rudd, she's fantastic. She's brilliant.

• 18:13Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 18:13Speaker 07

  Great.

• 18:14Jessie Ware?

So I'm just throwing that out.

• 18:15Speaker 07

Okay, I love it. I love it.

• 18:16Jessie Ware?

And if it happens, we'll be thrilled.

• 18:18Speaker 07

  Development executive immediately.

• 18:19Jessie Ware?

  Great, thank you.

• 18:20Speaker 07

Um, you know what? Can I say something about book clubs and why I think they're important and you, you're so right? Because first of all, we need to stop scrolling and get into the real world, right? Cause I'm guilty of it too.

• 18:30Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 18:31Speaker 07

But when you read books and socialize the concepts inside of them, you're actually doing a community service of getting people together, you know, and we need to, we need to remember that people are super duper lonely.

• 18:45Jessie Ware?

  Hmm.

• 18:46Speaker 07

People need to talk about things like love, loss, grief in community. Not a lot of people can afford therapy. And it's a way we synthesize the human experience and kind of share it with each other, right?

• 18:58Speaker 06

Oh, you see, my book club wasn't like that.

• 19:01Speaker 07

  What was that?

• 19:02Speaker 06

  Too.

• 19:04Speaker 06

Well, they didn't want to chat about feelings and how it made you feel. They wanted to, they treated it like a kind of further education class. I don't, I want to talk about how it made me feel and also, I'm Jewish. I cut across people and interrupt and they hate that. So we had to go in turn and, and the one person in charge kept saying, can we take it in turn?

• 19:28Jessie Ware?

  Oh, that's not fun.

• 19:29Speaker 06

And I knew it was directed at me, so I wouldn't speak.

• 19:33Jessie Ware?

Were you asked to leave or did you leave?

• 19:34Speaker 06

  I left.

• 19:35Jessie Ware?

  Okay. Um, right, we're going.

• 19:37Speaker 07

This sounds like a very boring book club. Come to my book club.

• 19:40Speaker 06

  I'll come in your book.

• 19:40Speaker 07

It's, it's much more fun and it's in Nashville. So we can go to a honky tonk after.

• 19:44Speaker 06

Yeah, honky tonk after. Do you wear rhinestones a lot?

• 19:47Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 19:48Speaker 06

Do you, do you have a big hat?

• 19:51Jessie Ware?

  For like what, Saturdays?

• 19:52Speaker 06

  And do line dancing?

• 19:53Speaker 07

Well, I do know how to line dance. I can teach you how to line dance. Yeah.

• 19:56Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 19:57Speaker 07

So easy. But I do, I have tons of cowboy boots. I don't wear rhinestones.

• 20:02Speaker 06

Okay. Have you got a cowboy hat?

• 20:05Speaker 07

  I really don't. That's more Texas.

• 20:07Speaker 06

Is, oh, is that more Texas?

• 20:08Speaker 07

  In my opinion.

• 20:09Speaker 06

Okay, but cowboy boots aren't Texas.

• 20:12Speaker 07

No, they are, but they're very Nashville.

• 20:14Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 20:16Jessie Ware?

  Maybe.

• 20:16Speaker 07

We didn't wear hats. We wore boots.

• 20:18Speaker 06

  Okay, wear boots?

• 20:20Speaker 07

And you can wear a big belt.

• 20:21Speaker 06

A, a big belt. You wear jeans, big belts?

• 20:26Speaker 07

Jeans or a tiny little cute skirt.

• 20:28Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 20:29Speaker 07

And then, yeah, and then you can't, I'm, some people wear rhinestones.

• 20:33Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 20:34Jessie Ware?

I'm imagining Lenny going to get kitted out. What's that famous road that, what the, what's it, the, um?

• 20:41Speaker 07

  Yeah, Broadway.

• 20:41Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, Broadway.

• 20:42Speaker 07

You go down to Broadway and then you can, they can dress you up and then put the boots on you.

• 20:46Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 20:46Speaker 07

And then we go line dancing.

• 20:47Speaker 06

Okay, and then we go line dancing.

• 20:49Speaker 07

  At the Wild Horse Saloon.

• 20:50Speaker 06

  The Wild Horse Saloon.

• 20:51Jessie Ware?

  It sounds heaven.

• 20:51Speaker 06

And where do you, if you're in Nashville, where do you go to eat? I mean, do you?

• 20:56Speaker 07

  Do you want my list?

• 20:57Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 20:57Speaker 06

  Is Arnold's on there?

• 20:58Speaker 07

Yeah, I love Arnold's. That's like a meat and three. You get your protein, which is usually something fried. Fried meat.

• 21:04Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 21:05Speaker 07

And then you get three um soggy boiled vegetables. But I think they're delicious. They cook them in ham hocks and broth.

• 21:14Jessie Ware?

  Delicious.

• 21:14Speaker 07

So they're very salty and delicious.

• 21:16Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 21:16Speaker 07

And so you usually do collard greens or green beans. They all look the same.

• 21:21Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 21:21Speaker 07

And then mashed potatoes with lots of butter and lots of milk.

• 21:25Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 21:26Speaker 07

  It's delicious.

• 21:27Jessie Ware?

Okay. And where else, if we were having a meat and three?

• 21:31Speaker 07

You have to get hot chicken in Nashville.

• 21:33Jessie Ware?

  Oh, okay.

• 21:34Speaker 07

So we have hot chicken, Princess Hot Chicken or Hattie B's. And then they have like different levels of heat, so you can try.

• 21:41Jessie Ware?

Oh, a bit like Nando's. So would you never, would you never do hot ones?

• 21:47Speaker 07

I, I was gonna do hot ones. But I had to cancel.

• 21:52Jessie Ware?

Okay, so maybe you will do it.

• 21:53Speaker 07

I had something I had to do the next day and I could not be feeling like that.

• 21:56Jessie Ware?

What, like the Ring of Fire?

• 21:58Speaker 07

  I can't do that.

• 21:59Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 21:59Speaker 07

That's not for me. I don't like to do a talk show and then feel the talk show the next day.

• 22:06Jessie Ware?

  Fair enough.

• 22:07Speaker 07

Do you know what I'm saying?

• 22:08Jessie Ware?

I know what you're saying, but.

• 22:09Speaker 06

Was what, the line done in Nashville?

• 22:11Speaker 07

Okay, actually, it was done in Memphis, Tennessee.

• 22:14Speaker 06

  Oh, Memphis.

• 22:14Speaker 07

And parts of Arkansas, which Arkansas and Memphis share the Mississippi River, so you just cross over a bridge and you're in Arkansas. But Mississippi, um Memphis is really amazing with Beale Street. So if you ever go to Memphis, of course, Graceland, of course, of course, Sun Records, of course, of course. But Beale Street is one of the coolest places to hear the blues. The original blues and you hear it, people there who really cannot believe they're not famous singing artists, like recording artists.

• 22:46Jessie Ware?

Well, I feel like you've kind of been in all these places that have music at the heart of them. You're talking like, and weren't you born in New Orleans?

• 22:55Speaker 07

I was born in New Orleans, yeah.

• 22:56Jessie Ware?

So like you've got Frenchman's, I mean, like it's kind of, it feels like it follows you. It's like, I mean, wasn't Coleman Domingo in that um Beale Street film?

• 23:04Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 23:05Jessie Ware?

That was a great film, wasn't it?

• 23:06Speaker 07

Yes. If Beale Street could talk.

• 23:07Jessie Ware?

Yes, that was a beautiful, was that about that Beale Street?

• 23:10Speaker 07

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:10Jessie Ware?

Okay. Um can we go back to your grandma?

• 23:13Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 23:13Jessie Ware?

Who you talk about um so fondly and your mum.

• 23:18Jessie Ware?

  Was a nurse?

• 23:19Speaker 07

  She's checking.

• 23:20Jessie Ware?

  She's checking the chicken.

• 23:21Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 23:21Jessie Ware?

Yeah. Um, your mum was a nurse?

• 23:23Speaker 07

My mother was a nurse and my dad was a doctor in the military first.

• 23:28Jessie Ware?

So you're, you talk about your grandma kind of helping to bring you up.

• 23:31Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 23:32Jessie Ware?

And what are some of the, can you give us, um, paint the picture of a very memorable meal? And who was sitting around the dinner table?

• 23:40Speaker 07

Oh, my gosh. My grandmother made the best food. So every Sunday she would do kind of Sunday night dinner supper. And we would go over there and it'd be my mom and me and my brother and my dad and his brother. Um, and my grandma and grandpa. And there was a while there when we moved back, because we were in the military. When we moved back from Germany, we lived with my grandparents for a year or two years. So I just, I remember us like sleeping on the couch and then my grandmother be cooking. And she'd make honey coated ham. So like sugared candied ham.

• 24:16Jessie Ware?

  Yum.

• 24:17Speaker 07

Um, sweet potatoes with, you know, marshmallows and, um, candied pecans on the top. And green beans and mashed potatoes. She'd make these like dough rolls, like yeast rolls that were like, um, kind of puffy, like a little loaf of bread.

• 24:33Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 24:34Speaker 07

Uh, lots of butter and always dessert. She loved meringue pie, so she could make the meringue really thick. And so she'd either do a chocolate cream with meringue on top or a lemon cream with the meringue. And then she'd toast the top of the meringue. I can't.

• 24:50Jessie Ware?

So she was an amazing cook?

• 24:52Speaker 07

She was, yeah, and she really loved it.

• 24:55Jessie Ware?

And she was your dad's mum?

• 24:57Speaker 07

  Yes, my dad's mum.

• 24:59Jessie Ware?

  What about the other grandma?

• 25:00Speaker 07

She passed away when my mom was really young.

• 25:02Jessie Ware?

Oh, so you never tasted that?

• 25:04Speaker 07

No, but I was named after her. Um, and my mom always says I'm a lot like, her name's Laura Jean Reese and I'm Laura Jean Reese.

• 25:11Speaker 06

Oh, so Reece isn't your first name?

• 25:14Speaker 07

No, Laura Jean is my first name.

• 25:16Speaker 06

Laura Jean, well, that sounds deep south to me.

• 25:19Jessie Ware?

  They're all good.

• 25:20Speaker 07

Yeah, we have these double names. These southern girls have double names, yeah.

• 25:24Speaker 06

  Oh, wow.

• 25:24Jessie Ware?

Can we, uh, we, we ask everybody what their last supper would be? And before we start eating a little bit, so the last supper, you don't, you can go to a desert island or you can go back to the wilderness, like, you know, it's, um, a starter, a main, a dessert.

• 25:40Speaker 07

  Whoa.

• 25:40Jessie Ware?

  And a drink of choice.

• 25:41Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 25:41Jessie Ware?

So you can think about it, we can come back to it.

• 25:43Speaker 07

  Oh, no, I already know.

• 25:44Jessie Ware?

You've got it. Okay, fine. Right, hit me.

• 25:47Speaker 07

Starter. Your mom left the interview, just FYI.

• 25:51Jessie Ware?

This is what happens. This is what happens.

• 25:53Speaker 07

  Lenny!

• 25:55Jessie Ware?

No, she just, this is the thing. So then we take, it's like, yeah, she's plating up. So then we just carry on. Don't worry, she hasn't left. She's just doing, she's, she's doing the work.

• 26:06Speaker 07

  She's hosting a party.

• 26:07Jessie Ware?

Exactly. So starter, main, dessert, drink of choice.

• 26:11Speaker 07

Okay, starter. Well, I mean, why not start with dessert? Because you're dying.

• 26:18Jessie Ware?

Oh, we're dying. We're not, we're not going to.

• 26:20Speaker 07

  You said last meal.

• 26:21Jessie Ware?

Yeah, I know, but I said it can be your last supper. If you want to do it like that.

• 26:24Speaker 07

  I'm gonna start with dessert.

• 26:26Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 26:27Speaker 07

Okay. I'm gonna have a baked Alaska.

• 26:29Jessie Ware?

  Oh, delicious.

• 26:31Speaker 07

I don't know how people make a baked Alaska, but it's the most delicious, in my mind, it's what baby Jesus ate.

• 26:42Speaker 07

  Because it's that delicious.

• 26:46Jessie Ware?

It's really professional. Don't worry. It's like, it's, it's, this is it. Welcome to our world.

• 26:51Speaker 07

  It's all right.

• 26:52Jessie Ware?

She's, you're killing it, Lenny. Okay, so you're starting with baked Alaska. Is there a particular baked Alaska that you've tried or has it been, well, you just always have it on the menu?

• 27:00Speaker 07

I had it somewhere recently where I was like, this is the best one ever, and I can't remember where. But I had it with my little, my thirteen year old, and he and I were like, this is insane. Cause it's some like, I don't even know, y'all know what baked Alaska is, but it was like, ice cream, but then something about a hot layer and then meringue on top.

• 27:20Jessie Ware?

  It's delicious.

• 27:21Speaker 07

  So good. I love meringue.

• 27:22Jessie Ware?

Maybe you could try and make, your cookie could be almost within, incorporated within your baked Alaska if you and your son make it. Maybe it's too much.

• 27:32Speaker 07

  No, I like that.

• 27:32Jessie Ware?

But I, um, I love a meringue too. So, okay, we're starting with that.

• 27:36Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 27:37Jessie Ware?

And then where are we going after that?

• 27:39Speaker 07

Then I'm gonna have a pasta bolognese, because there's nothing better on earth.

• 27:43Jessie Ware?

  I agree with you.

• 27:44Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 27:45Jessie Ware?

Mum, she just went with spag bol.

• 27:47Speaker 06

I love spaghetti bolognese, it's one of my favorites.

• 27:49Speaker 07

That's what I have to have.

• 27:50Jessie Ware?

Are you having a home cooked one, or are you going somewhere for it?

• 27:55Speaker 07

There's this restaurant in Los Angeles called Capo that has the most delicious one ever.

• 28:00Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 28:01Speaker 07

  Mm-hmm.

• 28:02Jessie Ware?

Have you asked the chef what they put in it? Because you know everyone's got their trick.

• 28:05Speaker 07

No, because I don't want to have to make it at home, because then I'll have to eat it.

• 28:08Speaker 06

Lisa, I've done roast chicken, but you need to tell me which bit of roast chicken you like.

• 28:13Speaker 07

Well, I kind of like the, um.

• 28:15Speaker 06

  Like breast?

• 28:16Speaker 07

I like the leg and thigh.

• 28:17Speaker 06

  The leg and thigh.

• 28:18Speaker 07

Thank you. This is delicious. Are you kidding me? This is beautiful.

• 28:22Jessie Ware?

  Thanks, Mum.

• 28:23Speaker 06

  Pleasure, darling.

• 28:24Jessie Ware?

I promise I will help kind of with the clearing up.

• 28:27Speaker 07

Is there anything we can do to help?

• 28:28Speaker 06

No, nothing. I'm, I'm on it. I might not look if I am.

• 28:32Jessie Ware?

She's a pro. Basically, this, this podcast was born out of the fact that my mum's always cooked for my friends. So that's kind of why we do it. But, um.

• 28:41Speaker 07

  I love that.

• 28:42Jessie Ware?

So, okay, so we've got spag bol. Are you having any sides?

• 28:47Speaker 07

  No.

• 28:48Jessie Ware?

  Just spag bol?

• 28:48Speaker 07

  Why bother?

• 28:49Jessie Ware?

  No. No, fair enough.

• 28:51Speaker 07

  This is my last meal.

• 28:53Jessie Ware?

  Okay, so, bait's a laster.

• 28:55Speaker 07

Whatever, I'm desert island, I'm not going to worry about, you know, eating greens.

• 29:01Jessie Ware?

  Fine.

• 29:02Speaker 07

I think I'm done with that part of my life.

• 29:04Jessie Ware?

Now, are we gonna end with a starter, or are we just gonna go back to a put?

• 29:08Speaker 07

You know what I'm gonna end with? Something I just had this summer in Florence, Italy. That is the most delicious thing I've ever had in my entire life.

• 29:18Speaker 07

An offigato, but with pistachio ice cream and pistachio cream on the side of the cup.

• 29:26Jessie Ware?

I've never heard of this and I'm into it.

• 29:28Speaker 07

  It's insane.

• 29:30Jessie Ware?

That's, so on the pistachio cream, like, how is the cream, like, is it whipped cream, like?

• 29:36Speaker 07

No, it's made like a hazelnut butter.

• 29:37Jessie Ware?

So it's like a, okay, fine, okay.

• 29:39Speaker 07

  Pistachio butter.

• 29:40Jessie Ware?

So like what we'd find in like the Dubai chocolate?

• 29:42Speaker 07

  Correct.

• 29:43Jessie Ware?

  Okay.

• 29:44Speaker 07

Oh, I have to have Dubai chocolate.

• 29:46Jessie Ware?

  It is good, isn't it?

• 29:47Speaker 07

With the little filo dough crispiness in the middle.

• 29:49Jessie Ware?

My mum made it for a guest on this, yeah.

• 29:51Speaker 07

  What? You made chocolate?

• 29:53Speaker 06

  It's easy.

• 29:54Jessie Ware?

You like homemade chocolate. You got your little moulds, didn't you?

• 29:59Speaker 06

  I've got mould.

• 30:00Jessie Ware?

  Thanks, Mum.

• 30:01Speaker 07

Do you temper your own chocolate?

• 30:02Speaker 06

  Yeah, I did for that.

• 30:04Jessie Ware?

  Willy Wonka over here.

• 30:07Speaker 06

I don't know how much you want, Reece.

• 30:09Jessie Ware?

Reece, how much do you want? Well, a leg or legging of, yeah.

• 30:13Speaker 07

You know, it's still early in the morning, so I'm gonna, um...

• 30:17Speaker 06

Okay, I'm not gonna overface it.

• 30:18Speaker 07

  Little bite.

• 30:20Jessie Ware?

You're making out that Lenny's really wholesome and I'm kind of a...

• 30:23Speaker 06

  Thank you. Bad, darling.

• 30:24Jessie Ware?

  Um, thanks, Mum.

• 30:25Speaker 06

  Help yourself to vegetables.

• 30:27Jessie Ware?

This is beautiful. It does, Mum.

• 30:30Speaker 07

  It smells like home.

• 30:40Speaker 00

Flowing ad budget on metrics that look great till the CFO sees them? That's bullspend and marketers are calling it out in Dashboard Confessions.

• 30:50Speaker 01

I remember telling my boss, "It'll be good for the brand," when leads were slow. Yeah, it, it wasn't.

• 33:38Speaker 07

How do you make your gravy?

• 33:40Jessie Ware?

  This does look good.

• 33:41Speaker 06

  Just with some wine.

• 33:43Speaker 07

  Wine?

• 33:44Speaker 06

Some cranberry sauces in that as well.

• 33:46Jessie Ware?

Sweeten it up a little bit.

• 33:47Speaker 06

  Sweeten it up.

• 33:49Speaker 07

  And you do broth?

• 33:51Speaker 06

I use the broth from the chickens.

• 33:53Speaker 07

  You do?

• 33:54Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 33:55Speaker 07

And it creates enough broth to make a gravy? All right, would you like some greens?

• 33:59Jessie Ware?

I'd love some, thanks. You're here to promote the morning show, which is excellent.

• 34:03Speaker 07

I am, and thank you for having a song on our show, Jesse.

• 34:06Jessie Ware?

Oh my God, I loved it.

• 34:07Speaker 06

  I need another one.

• 34:08Speaker 07

  I know.

• 34:09Speaker 06

  I love the morning show.

• 34:11Jessie Ware?

I love the opening of Big Little Lies. That was iconic singing.

• 34:15Speaker 07

  That one was good.

• 34:16Jessie Ware?

The Michael Komenuka sing- it's iconic.

• 34:18Speaker 07

  That one was really good.

• 34:19Jessie Ware?

  Sometimes like-

• 34:20Speaker 07

Every time I'm in a yoga class, they play that song called "Little Heart" from Big Little Lies, and I'm like, are they playing this? Because I'm in the show.

• 34:29Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, is it awkward?

• 34:30Speaker 07

Whenever I walk into a bar and they're playing a Johnny Cash song, I'm like-

• 34:33Jessie Ware?

  Did they just say?

• 34:34Speaker 07

Or Sweet Home Alabama. Like, I have all these songs that I associate with movies.

• 34:39Jessie Ware?

Can I add another one to that?

• 34:40Speaker 07

  Yeah, tell me.

• 34:41Jessie Ware?

This is the part when I say I don't wanna. Sing, Rosita, Rosita.

• 34:46Speaker 07

  Oh, yeah.

• 34:46Jessie Ware?

  That was iconic.

• 34:47Speaker 07

Oh, you're a mom, so you know Sing.

• 34:50Jessie Ware?

  We love Sing.

• 34:51Speaker 07

And you know, I'm, I see a lot of people don't know I'm in that movie.

• 34:54Jessie Ware?

  You're the best piggy ever.

• 34:57Jessie Ware?

  You and Gunther.

• 34:58Speaker 07

  I love that movie.

• 34:59Jessie Ware?

It's such a great movie. Now, I actually think the second movie was better.

• 35:03Speaker 07

  I, I kind of agree.

• 35:05Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, that.

• 35:05Speaker 06

  That sounds this, Jessie, Sing.

• 35:08Jessie Ware?

  Sing.

• 35:08Speaker 06

  Who is she?

• 35:10Jessie Ware?

The pig. You were the pig. The really hardworking mum of like, how many piglets did she have? Like?

• 35:15Speaker 07

  Thirty-four.

• 35:16Jessie Ware?

  So many. Like, really.

• 35:19Speaker 07

So whenever you feel overwhelmed, just remember someone has thirty-four children. And then suck it up and just be quiet.

• 35:26Jessie Ware?

It's so true. It's so true. But that was really good. Are they gonna do another one of them?

• 35:31Speaker 07

  I don't know.

• 35:32Jessie Ware?

I hope so. So if we were coming around to your house and we opened up the fridge.

• 35:38Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 35:38Jessie Ware?

Apart from cookie dough, maybe we'd find, what would we always find in Reese, Reese Witherspoon's fridge?

• 35:44Speaker 07

Okay, a lot of vegetables, like probably everything you've seen. Leeks, carrots.

• 35:50Jessie Ware?

  Mm-hmm.

• 35:51Speaker 07

Celery. So I make a lot of, oh, I, every morning I make a green smoothie. I put in spinach, romaine lettuce, an apple, a pear, a banana, and a whole lemon.

• 36:02Jessie Ware?

Do you actually enjoy that? No, but you do it.

• 36:05Speaker 07

I actually enjoy it. I've been drinking it for ten years.

• 36:08Jessie Ware?

  Okay, fair enough.

• 36:08Speaker 07

  It's changed my skin, my.

• 36:10Jessie Ware?

Oh, really? Oh, now I'm in. Okay, now we're talking about.

• 36:13Speaker 07

  I'm telling you.

• 36:14Jessie Ware?

  It's gonna reverse aging, sure.

• 36:15Speaker 07

Makes your eyes white, it, it's like everything.

• 36:17Jessie Ware?

Do you add any like chlorophyll in those thingies?

• 36:20Speaker 07

No, I don't put anything in it. Um, I just drink it, cause it's pure, you know, fresh produce. So it's really good.

• 36:27Jessie Ware?

  What's it taste like?

• 36:28Speaker 07

It tastes kind of more apple and lemon.

• 36:30Jessie Ware?

  Fine.

• 36:31Speaker 07

It tastes like apple lemon juice, but it has like a little lettuce taste to it. So you gotta just choke it down.

• 36:35Jessie Ware?

Does your son, your thirteen-year-old, um, drink it as well?

• 36:39Speaker 07

  Absolutely not.

• 36:42Speaker 06

You make your children drink it. Sam does. He calls it green juice.

• 36:46Jessie Ware?

Yeah, we call it dinosaur smoothie for the four year olds. So he will drink it.

• 36:50Speaker 07

What do you put in the dinosaur smoothie?

• 36:52Jessie Ware?

And well, to make it green, it'll probably be like spinach or something, but we'll all bananas, you know. What else is in there? Whatever's kind of, we freeze the bananas, which I think is good.

• 37:02Speaker 07

  It helps. Makes it better.

• 37:04Jessie Ware?

Yeah, but Sam's usually a bit, they're more khaki than green, I'd say. They're kind of, he needs to put more of the green in, do you know what I mean? They're like, they go a bit of a sad color.

• 37:13Speaker 07

  Hmm.

• 37:14Jessie Ware?

  They're not vibrant.

• 37:14Speaker 07

  Mm hmm.

• 37:15Jessie Ware?

Um, okay. So we'd find fresh produce. Great. In your freezer, which ice cream is in there?

• 37:21Speaker 07

I really like this ice cream that they make in Nashville. It's called Baked Bear. And it's coffee flavored ice cream with Oreos in it.

• 37:28Jessie Ware?

  Oh, wow.

• 37:29Speaker 07

What? Yes, your face says it all. It's that delicious.

• 37:32Jessie Ware?

That's heaven because coffee is our favorite ice cream.

• 37:35Speaker 07

  Same.

• 37:36Jessie Ware?

  Oh, my God.

• 37:36Speaker 07

Coffee. Do you know what's one of my favorite things that moms and daughters do?

• 37:39Jessie Ware?

  What?

• 37:40Speaker 07

Talk about what they bought at the grocery store. My mom will go, I just went to Trader Joe's. Have you been to Trader Joe's? It's just great. Y'all have Trader Joe's?

• 37:48Jessie Ware?

No, but I love Trader Joe's.

• 37:50Speaker 07

She's like, I got these ginger snap cookies and they only come out at Christmas time and they are delicious. Reese, you have to go get a box of these ginger snap cookies. So I'll go down, get the box of cookies and I'm like, Mom, they're okay. They're like a little dry, but we'll literally have a conversation from the grocery store. And then she tells me what she bought. I bought half a baked potato. And um, that's what I had for dinner and I put a little chili with it and it was delicious.

• 38:15Jessie Ware?

That's um, I mean, I guess we are basically together for most meal times now. So we know exactly, but we do, how many, how many times a day do you speak to your mom?

• 38:26Speaker 07

Well, I text with her every day and then every Sunday we have dinner. And I make like spaghetti bolognese because it's, I ma- I normally really make four things pretty well and that, that's one of them.

• 38:40Speaker 06

Do you have a secret ingredient in your spaghetti bolognese?

• 38:44Speaker 07

Well, I always secretly try to put in vegetables. It doesn't, my kid is like, I see the spinach in that and you can't.

• 38:51Speaker 06

  Oh, you put spinach in.

• 38:53Speaker 07

  Is that terrible?

• 38:53Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 38:54Speaker 07

  Okay, I won't do that.

• 38:55Speaker 06

But don't you put carrots and celery in?

• 38:57Speaker 07

I do, so I grate the carrots and the celery and um, and the onion.

• 39:01Jessie Ware?

Yeah, cause it has to be really small, cause otherwise the child is gonna, yeah.

• 39:05Speaker 07

  They taste it.

• 39:05Jessie Ware?

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:06Speaker 07

Yeah, no, that's, that's basically it. Nothing's fancy. And then, um, what else do I make? I roast chicken. Or I can make a steak or a filet mignon, something like that.

• 39:18Speaker 06

  A what?

• 39:18Speaker 07

  Filet mignon.

• 39:19Speaker 06

  A filet mignon.

• 39:20Jessie Ware?

How do you take your steak?

• 39:22Speaker 07

  Uh, medium.

• 39:24Jessie Ware?

And what sides are you gonna have with your steak?

• 39:28Jessie Ware?

  If you're out.

• 39:29Speaker 07

  If I'm out?

• 39:30Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 39:31Speaker 07

  Like a twice baked potato?

• 39:33Jessie Ware?

  Mmm.

• 39:34Speaker 07

Like, like when they bake the potato, then they scoop out the middle and then they mix it with that.

• 39:39Speaker 06

  I do that.

• 39:40Jessie Ware?

It's so, it's glorious and you add some, oh, it's glorious.

• 39:43Speaker 07

  Really good.

• 39:43Speaker 06

  Sour cream and chives.

• 39:44Speaker 07

  It's really nice.

• 39:46Jessie Ware?

What's your um, sauce that you're gonna have?

• 39:47Speaker 07

  Sauce?

• 39:48Speaker 06

Yeah, like a peppercorn, a bernaise, chimichurri.

• 39:51Speaker 07

Oh, I don't really eat any sauce.

• 39:53Jessie Ware?

  Not a condiment girl.

• 39:55Speaker 07

  I'm not big on it.

• 39:56Jessie Ware?

  Fair enough.

• 39:57Speaker 07

  No.

• 39:57Jessie Ware?

  That's okay. No judgment here.

• 40:01Jessie Ware?

Can I ask, because not only are you and Jennifer Aniston in the morning show and you are incredible and the new season is amazing on Apple TV plus.

• 40:09Speaker 06

I've only watched, cause I love it so much.

• 40:12Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 40:12Speaker 06

I've only watched two because I really want to watch it on TV, not on my iPad.

• 40:17Jessie Ware?

I, I've watched five. I've got to the Chris Hunter episode, which is.

• 40:21Speaker 06

  Don't.

• 40:21Jessie Ware?

  Excellent.

• 40:22Speaker 06

But I just like watching it on TV.

• 40:25Speaker 07

  I know.

• 40:26Speaker 06

  On a big screen.

• 40:27Speaker 07

You know what my mother says when she loves a TV show? She's like, it's like a little box of chocolates and I don't wanna eat too many.

• 40:33Speaker 06

  That's exactly.

• 40:34Jessie Ware?

  Exactly how I felt.

• 40:35Speaker 07

I like to eat one a week.

• 40:37Jessie Ware?

  No, I I gorge, I binge.

• 40:39Speaker 07

  Do you?

• 40:40Jessie Ware?

I binge and then I feel shit about myself.

• 40:42Speaker 07

Well, then you just don't have anything to look forward to.

• 40:44Jessie Ware?

I know, but like, so you you're not a binger with you.

• 40:47Speaker 07

I can't binge because I get too sleepy.

• 40:49Speaker 06

I would say that I think it's almost one of the best seasons I've watched.

• 40:54Speaker 07

  Thank you.

• 40:54Speaker 06

To be honest, I think it's it's quite cutthroat. It's more exciting. I love all the different relationships. Old Corrie is coming out as not the nicest person in the world.

• 41:07Speaker 07

That's right. Wait till you get to episode eight, you're gonna wanna stab him with something.

• 41:10Jessie Ware?

No, okay, we can't give away too much because then it would give away.

• 41:13Speaker 07

No, no, maybe not episode eight, it might be nine, but you're like, are you joking? But do you love Jen with her dad?

• 41:20Jessie Ware?

  With Jeremy Irons?

• 41:21Speaker 06

  Jeremy Irons.

• 41:22Speaker 07

  Can you die?

• 41:23Jessie Ware?

  The casting is just.

• 41:25Speaker 07

  I can't.

• 41:25Speaker 06

When I saw him and it's her father.

• 41:27Jessie Ware?

But like, whose idea was that?

• 41:29Speaker 07

He's so funny. It was just like Jennifer and and casting our show, who's brilliant, Vicky Thomas, who cast our show. And he's just perfect. You, there's a really funny episode too where he does something really bad and she has to go get him and it's, oh, so funny.

• 41:47Jessie Ware?

I'm also, there's, I can't say much, but there's somebody that comes back. And that's a great character that comes back. And I'm happy because I always wondered where they went. But I want to know, because you and Jennifer, actually, you played her little sister in Friends.

• 42:01Speaker 07

  I did.

• 42:02Jessie Ware?

I just need to know, did you ever try the famous Jennifer Aniston quinoa salad on set? That apparently she ate every day.

• 42:08Speaker 07

  What the hell was that?

• 42:09Jessie Ware?

Oh, Dan, what? Is the internet lying to me?

• 42:13Speaker 07

Did she have a, she has a famous salad?

• 42:15Jessie Ware?

And I don't know, this is.

• 42:16Speaker 07

I think you were gonna ask me if I got her haircut.

• 42:17Jessie Ware?

This is, did you get her haircut?

• 42:19Speaker 07

  Of course.

• 42:19Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, we all did.

• 42:20Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 42:21Jessie Ware?

But, no, there's this, this is what my algorithms give me. Jennifer Aniston's famous Friends salad that she had. And it was like really small cut up, um, veg. It looked delicious. I think it it was quinoa, it had this certain vinegar, and apparently she ate it like every down set.

• 42:36Speaker 07

  Yum.

• 42:37Jessie Ware?

  But I, that's a lie, isn't it?

• 42:39Speaker 06

If someone said you've got to eat quinoa every day, I'd kill myself.

• 42:43Jessie Ware?

  I like quinoa.

• 42:43Speaker 06

Hate it. It's like frog spawn.

• 42:47Jessie Ware?

  It's cooked wrong.

• 42:49Speaker 06

Yeah, probably is, but I don't like it.

• 42:51Speaker 07

I think, I mean, I wasn't gonna go all the way to Frog Spawn.

• 42:54Speaker 06

Yeah, but it's horrible. Yeah, it's horrible.

• 42:56Jessie Ware?

Well, you're not cooking yours enough and you're cooking yours too much. That's where it's both going wrong.

• 43:01Speaker 06

  And it looks so unappetizing.

• 43:04Jessie Ware?

Okay, leave it alone. I want to stop about the quinoa. Anyway, fine.

• 43:09Speaker 06

But every, everyone's hair was not Jennifer, it was Rachel. Yeah, I used to go in and say, I'm a hair like Rachel. That's what you wanted.

• 43:18Jessie Ware?

It didn't suit me, actually. It wasn't good. I got it down the road and it didn't look great on me, to be honest. I don't think it looked great on many people, did it?

• 43:26Speaker 07

It was only good on her.

• 43:28Jessie Ware?

  She's, is she lovely?

• 43:30Speaker 07

Yes, she's so great. And she loves to have dinner parties and she loves having people over and she's sort of the mom of the group and she's, you know, Greek by heritage, so she's very, this is a generalization, but it's a good one, very warm and welcoming. You know, you just immediately are at ease with her.

• 43:51Jessie Ware?

It feels so exciting and inspiring what you've set up with Hello Sunshine. And also, like, I was doing a bit of a dive and like, the fact that you've got like Sunny as a platform, which is about for Gen Z. Can you explain a bit more about that?

• 44:06Speaker 07

Yeah, so Hello Sunshine is our company where we make movies and television shows for women.

• 44:11Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 44:12Speaker 07

Based on books written by women.

• 44:14Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 44:14Speaker 07

And then we also do live events and we get people together to talk to experts and doctors and it's a really great sort of continuing education platform for women. So we decided last year, why don't we do this for moms and their daughters? So now we've got a Sunny, that's our brand, and we're gonna be doing books, podcasts, and also live events where you can bring your daughter, talk about all the things that nobody wants to talk about, but you really need to address, like social media, the show Adolescents.

• 44:43Speaker 06

Is your mum a big feminist?

• 44:46Speaker 07

  My mom?

• 44:46Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 44:47Speaker 07

  Um.

• 44:48Speaker 06

Because it's got a feminist. Edge to it.

• 44:52Speaker 07

You know, I I would say my mom is very everything that supports women because she worked in women's healthcare for many, many years and was in fertility. And she also worked in prenatal nursery. Um, so anything that concerns women's reproductive health or medical wellness is what my mom's biggest concern is. That's her passion in life is taking care of.

• 45:16Speaker 06

  Women's health.

• 45:17Speaker 07

And advocating for them, you know, when she just feels like people aren't educated enough about their own bodies.

• 45:24Speaker 06

  So she influenced you.

• 45:25Speaker 07

Oh, for sure. It was really interesting. My my grandmother was very academic and literary. She was a school teacher. And then my mom was very medical, nurse oriented, caring and service. So I'm kind of a blend between the two of them. And my mom grew up way out in the country and was sort of informal and has sort of country wisdom. And my grandmother was raised really proper. And so I I'm sort of a blend of the two of them.

• 45:52Speaker 06

How long were you living in Germany?

• 45:54Speaker 07

We lived there for four years.

• 45:56Speaker 06

  Oh, I like Priscilla Presley.

• 45:58Speaker 07

Yes, my mother loves Priscilla Presley.

• 46:02Speaker 06

Does she? Does she know her?

• 46:04Speaker 07

  No, she wishes she did.

• 46:05Speaker 06

Oh, okay. I just wondered if they'd met. No, she's, well, your mother would, no, your grandmother would have been. How old is Priscilla Presley now?

• 46:14Speaker 07

  I have no idea.

• 46:15Speaker 06

  Well, she's Riley's mom.

• 46:18Speaker 07

  Grandma.

• 46:19Speaker 06

Grandma, yes, that's right. Yeah, she must be, yeah.

• 46:25Speaker 07

And she just has always been so put together and um I think my mother just really loves anybody who's sort of beautiful and enigmatic, like Princess Diana.

• 46:37Speaker 06

  Jackie, Jackie O.

• 46:39Speaker 07

Jackie O, Kate Middleton. You know.

• 46:42Jessie Ware?

  Whilst whilst you're in London.

• 46:43Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 46:44Jessie Ware?

Have you eaten anywhere great? Have you gone to the theatre? Have you got time? Do you need any recommendations?

• 46:49Speaker 07

Oh, you're so sweet. I'm gonna go tomorrow night to see Sean Hayes in the last night of his play.

• 46:54Jessie Ware?

  Is that the Oscar?

• 46:56Speaker 07

  Yeah, Good Luck Oscar.

• 46:57Jessie Ware?

Good Luck Oscar. It's at the Barbican?

• 46:59Speaker 07

  Yeah, that's right.

• 47:00Jessie Ware?

I love the Barbican. They've got a good martini bar there.

• 47:02Speaker 07

I've never been there. I'm gonna go grab a martini and watch Sean Hayes. Be brilliant.

• 47:06Jessie Ware?

Well, it's like this amazing brutalist um architecture.

• 47:09Speaker 07

  Oh.

• 47:10Jessie Ware?

And but there is a martini bar in there. Maybe just pop in.

You know what I really like to do here? I like to go to little restaurants and um. I met this chef a few years ago, Ashma Khan. She has um, I think it's called Jar Juling. It's over uh near the theatre district. Maybe y'all can look it up. But she has this great Indian restaurant. That's just like homemade Indian food. It's really lovely. And she's so funny and so brilliant. She came to speak at my conference in L A. I loved her so much. I saw her speaking at another conference. And she only hires grandma's. And then grandma's cook the food. And she's like, because whenever I would ask somebody in the food business.

• 47:54Speaker 07

Um who's the best cook you know? And they'd say, my grandma. So she was like, why am I hiring anybody but grandma's? So I love the whole concept. It's really beautiful. And then I love melt chocolate.

• 48:05Jessie Ware?

  Milk chocolate?

• 48:06Speaker 07

  Melt.

• 48:07Jessie Ware?

  Oh, melt.

• 48:07Speaker 07

Do you know what melt is?

• 48:08Jessie Ware?

I do. I got it as a ham. I got it as a hamper from my record label one Christmas and it was very delicious. It's a chocolate brand here. I think it's in like West London, maybe.

• 48:19Speaker 07

Yeah, West London. And they have it in Selfridges and stuff like that. I love melt chocolate. Ever since I made a movie here eighteen years ago, I've been obsessed with it.

• 48:26Jessie Ware?

So you're now gonna get melt chocolate from everybody?

• 48:29Speaker 07

People already know that I'm obsessed with choc- I'm obsessed with making chocolate, so.

• 48:33Jessie Ware?

I have made chocolate brownies, but I don't think you'll have time to eat them, so I'm gonna give you one to take home.

• 48:38Speaker 07

  Oh, you're so sweet.

• 48:40Jessie Ware?

  But it's made with aubergine.

• 48:43Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 48:43Jessie Ware?

  Mum's very proud of them.

• 48:45Speaker 07

Well, I think that might be interesting. I've never heard of aubergine in a brownie. Isn't it a chocolate cake or a brownie?

• 48:50Jessie Ware?

  It's well, it's quite gooey.

• 48:52Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 48:52Jessie Ware?

Well, no, yeah, I guess that's the aubergine. I'm gonna get them out the fridge.

• 48:57Speaker 07

But I need to try it.

• 48:59Jessie Ware?

  Okay, go on, try it.

• 49:00Speaker 07

I made you go to all this trouble.

• 49:02Speaker 06

No, you haven't. It's fine. You tell me what you think of those.

• 49:05Speaker 07

What did you have to do to an aubergine to make it into a brownie?

• 49:07Speaker 06

Bait the aubergine and then you um.

• 49:11Speaker 07

They're all looking at me like.

• 49:12Jessie Ware?

All right, I'm gonna try it too. Come on.

• 49:14Speaker 06

  Yeah, that is, they're good.

• 49:15Speaker 07

  It smells delicious. It's chewy.

• 49:18Speaker 06

  It's chewy.

• 49:19Speaker 07

  It has a chewy consistency.

• 49:22Speaker 06

  Don't tell me that's horrible.

• 49:25Jessie Ware?

  It's not horrible.

• 49:27Speaker 06

  Can you taste its aubergine?

• 49:29Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 49:29Speaker 06

  No.

• 49:29Jessie Ware?

  Mm-mm.

• 49:30Speaker 06

  It just makes it.

• 49:31Jessie Ware?

  Tastes good for you.

• 49:33Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 49:33Jessie Ware?

  It's.

• 49:34Speaker 06

  It's masses of chocolate.

• 49:35Jessie Ware?

  It's good.

• 49:36Speaker 06

  I think it's quite good.

• 49:37Jessie Ware?

  It tastes like

• 49:40Jessie Ware?

  a health food shop.

• 49:41Speaker 06

  Does it?

• 49:42Jessie Ware?

For an aubergine brownie, it surprised me. Do you know what I mean?

• 49:46Speaker 06

  Oh.

• 49:46Jessie Ware?

  That's actually quite delicious, but.

• 49:48Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 49:48Speaker 07

Do you guys have vegetarian or vegan friends who just try and pitch their foods? Do you do that all the time?

• 49:52Speaker 06

  I've got a friend who.

• 49:53Speaker 07

You're like, I don't think so, honey. Like, I can't. I can't eat a date and you're telling me it tastes like a candy bar. It just doesn't.

• 50:00Speaker 06

  Jessie tells you.

• 50:01Jessie Ware?

  I, I will.

• 50:02Speaker 07

  Like an old.

• 50:04Speaker 06

  Date.

• 50:04Jessie Ware?

No, but you have, you've tried the date in the freezer with the chocolate and the peanut butter.

• 50:09Speaker 07

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I'm saying it's good.

• 50:11Jessie Ware?

But it's not, it's not Snickers.

• 50:13Speaker 07

  It's not five stars.

• 50:15Jessie Ware?

  No.

• 50:15Speaker 07

No. But it like, it, it scratches an itch.

• 50:19Jessie Ware?

  Uh huh. Exactly.

• 50:21Speaker 07

It's definitely not the, the meal replacement that I thought it was gonna be.

• 50:23Speaker 06

  I think these are okay.

• 50:25Jessie Ware?

I think they're very nice, mum, for an aubergine brownie. I'm very impressed and I would.

• 50:29Speaker 07

And I love the little toasted almonds.

• 50:31Speaker 06

Yeah, and there's chocolate chip on the top.

• 50:33Speaker 07

  And there's chocolate chip bits.

• 50:35Jessie Ware?

Please acknowledge the chocolate chip. Please, please, Reece. I couldn't see the chocolate chip.

• 50:40Speaker 06

Yeah, well, you can there. The only thing I would say is they were quite gooey when I tried to cut them up.

• 50:46Jessie Ware?

  But they're not anymore.

• 50:47Speaker 06

And I had to, Paul Hollywood, put them back in the oven for another ten minutes to try and fill them up.

• 50:52Jessie Ware?

Make sure they're no soggy pot.

• 50:53Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 50:54Jessie Ware?

Um, Reece, before we let you go.

• 50:55Speaker 07

  Yes.

• 50:56Jessie Ware?

Can you give us a nostalgic taste that can transport you back somewhere?

• 51:02Speaker 07

  Oh, um, banana pudding.

• 51:06Jessie Ware?

Can you explain what banana pudding is, please?

• 51:08Speaker 07

  Okay, banana pudding is.

• 51:10Speaker 06

  Banana pudding.

• 51:11Jessie Ware?

No, I don't, no, but like Scissor loves banana pudding, I hear.

• 51:15Speaker 06

You use that kind of not very authentic, it's not made with cream, you use that kind of mix and add bananas in.

• 51:23Speaker 07

Mm hmm. We have this mix, Jell-O mix, and you put, you put cold milk.

• 51:27Jessie Ware?

Jell-O like jelly, we, not jam, like you, Jell-O is like the wibble wibble wibble wibble.

• 51:32Speaker 07

It's not gelatin, it's not gelatin. So pudding is whipped up milk and eggs and it.

• 51:39Jessie Ware?

  Yeah.

• 51:39Speaker 07

And then you kind of, I don't really know what you do with it, but it tastes like bananas. And then they put these little vanilla cookies all around it.

• 51:49Jessie Ware?

  That sounds nice.

• 51:50Speaker 07

And it's real delicious. And then you put fresh whipped cream on top. And that reminds me of childhood.

• 51:54Jessie Ware?

So there's no base to the banana pudding?

• 51:57Speaker 07

  There's milk and eggs.

• 51:58Jessie Ware?

But there's like, like not a, a cake base?

• 52:02Speaker 06

Probably like custard, banana custard, yeah.

• 52:05Speaker 07

Oh, well, some people lay the cookies out. So you get a casserole dish and you lay the cookies out and you put the pudding over it and then you put the cookies all around.

• 52:13Jessie Ware?

  That sounds quite nice.

• 52:14Speaker 07

And then you crumble the cookies and then you put the whipped cream and then you kind of let it in the fridge to set. But you have to cook the milk and the eggs so it doesn't get.

• 52:22Jessie Ware?

Okay. And, and does this remind you, and where, where, can you paint the picture of where you were having this banana pudding?

• 52:28Speaker 07

Oh, I was at my grandma's house on a Sunday night and we were always there at five o'clock on Sunday afternoons. And it was just, she'd have out her chafing dishes and she did this whole presentation and it was just really nice.

• 52:42Jessie Ware?

Reece with this group, thank you so much for coming, um, over and, and being a great sport. And yeah.

• 52:49Speaker 07

Thank you so much for this.

• 52:50Speaker 06

Such a pleasure, such a pleasure.

• 52:52Speaker 07

You guys are so fun to talk to.

• 53:08Jessie Ware?

  Reese Witherspoon.

• 53:09Speaker 06

She's so gorgeous. She looks just like she did in Legally Blonde. She looks like her.

• 53:15Jessie Ware?

She's not only gorgeous, she was really lovely and warm and loved you, Mum.

• 53:22Speaker 06

  Did she do?

• 53:22Jessie Ware?

Oh my god, she was just, she couldn't stop watching you as you were like shuffling around in the kitchen.

• 53:27Speaker 06

  I'm not surprised.

• 53:28Jessie Ware?

No, she knows who her, who her star is in The Nexter.

• 53:32Speaker 06

  Of course darling.

• 53:33Jessie Ware?

  Yeah, she, she loved you.

• 53:35Speaker 06

  I loved her.

• 53:36Jessie Ware?

  I loved her too.

• 53:37Speaker 06

  She's so clever.

• 53:38Jessie Ware?

Bright, brilliant, gemrous. I mean, look, we scratched the mere surfaces with Reece because, well, we had an hour and we loved having the hour, but I, we could have kept going about boots.

• 53:52Speaker 06

I think we should go to Nashville.

• 53:54Jessie Ware?

Yeah, and go line dancing with her.

• 53:55Speaker 06

  Go line dancing with her.

• 53:56Jessie Ware?

If you like that. And, hiya.

• 53:59Speaker 06

  It's us.

• 54:00Jessie Ware?

We just wanna go boot shopping, Reece.

• 54:02Speaker 06

And where are we going for dinner first? What was the name of the place?

• 54:05Jessie Ware?

Prince's Chicken, was it? With the hot chicken?

• 54:08Speaker 06

I don't know. We'll have hot chicken. I'm gonna get cowboy boots.

• 54:11Jessie Ware?

  Mum, I love Nashville.

• 54:12Speaker 06

  I've never been.

• 54:13Jessie Ware?

  Oh, it's the best.

• 54:14Speaker 06

I've never met anyone from Nashville, darling.

• 54:18Jessie Ware?

  Really?

• 54:18Speaker 06

  No.

• 54:19Jessie Ware?

  Oh.

• 54:19Speaker 06

I've met Trombone Shorty from New Orleans.

• 54:22Jessie Ware?

Yeah, very far away, yeah, okay.

• 54:24Speaker 06

It's down that neck of the woods.

• 54:25Jessie Ware?

Okay, sure. Anyway, um, thank you to Reese Witherspoon for coming on the podcast, for opening up season 18 with such fabulous.

• 54:32Speaker 06

  And being so fabulous, yeah.

• 54:34Jessie Ware?

Yeah, um, The Morning Show is out on Apple TV Plus now.

• 54:39Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 54:39Jessie Ware?

  It's really good.

• 54:40Speaker 06

  It's so good.

• 54:41Jessie Ware?

I'm in five, five episodes and it's absolutely brilliant.

• 54:45Speaker 06

  Brilliant.

• 54:46Jessie Ware?

We are definitely trying that affogato with pistachio and pistachio cream.

• 54:50Speaker 06

  Perfect.

• 54:51Jessie Ware?

  Gorgeous.

• 54:51Speaker 06

  Because coffee goes with pistachio.

• 54:53Jessie Ware?

She's our kind of girl, isn't she?

• 54:54Speaker 06

  Yeah, she is.

• 54:55Jessie Ware?

  I think she's everyone's kind of girl.

• 54:56Speaker 06

  I think she is too.

• 54:57Jessie Ware?

Thank you, Reece. Um, thank you to everyone that's listening and we'll see you next week.

• 55:39Speaker 03
