Ep 258: Judd Apatow

No better way to be back in the studio than with comedy legend Judd Apatow. Mark and Sam go deep on the road, European gigs, bombing at the clubs, and why some crowds just refuse to laugh. Judd talks Larry Sanders, Sandler stories, Rodney Dangerfield in a bathrobe, writing on The Critic, the legacy of Norm Macdonald, and what comedy still gets right. Plus, behind-the-scenes of classics like Anchorman, Bridesmaids, Pineapple Express, and what it actually takes to make a real, modern comedy movie. • 0:06Sam Morril?

Well, it's good to see you.

• 0:07Mark Normand?

  Hey!

• 0:07Sam Morril?

  It's been a minute.

• 0:08Mark Normand?

Been so long, it's good to be back in America.

• 0:11Sam Morril?

I know, we were gone for a while.

• 0:13Mark Normand?

Yeah, yeah, did, uh, you know what? Did Oslo, Dublin, geez, where is Fidland?

• 0:21Sam Morril?

The only place we overlapped was, I think, Dublin.

• 0:23Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 0:24Sam Morril?

I missed you by a day.

• 0:25Mark Normand?

Yeah, how crazy is that? It was like Jordan Jensen, me, then you, in Dublin.

• 0:29Sam Morril?

Crazy, and then, um, you didn't do Paris.

• 0:32Mark Normand?

  Nah.

• 0:33Sam Morril?

  Paris was great this time.

• 0:34Mark Normand?

  I'm saving it.

• 0:35Sam Morril?

Yeah, Paris is like, not always my favorite for comedy, but this time it was great.

• 0:38Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 0:39Sam Morril?

But, yeah, how was Athens? It looked gorgeous, those pictures.

• 0:42Mark Normand?

Oh my god, did you go there?

• 0:44Sam Morril?

  I've been there.

• 0:44Mark Normand?

  I saw ruins.

• 0:45Sam Morril?

I've been, oh, that was Rome.

• 0:46Mark Normand?

Oh, okay, got it, got it.

• 0:48Sam Morril?

Rome was great, I saw Francesco De Carlo.

• 0:51Mark Normand?

  Wow!

• 0:51Sam Morril?

He took us out to dinner, did the sneak, he did the sneak credit card pay behind my back. I tried to do it, and they were like, "He beat you to it."

• 0:57Mark Normand?

  That's how they catch ya.

• 0:58Sam Morril?

  And he's famous over there.

• 0:59Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah?

• 1:00Sam Morril?

Francesco, you know, so, we're walking around Italy, and people are like, "Mamma mia Francesco!", like, the way, they're so emotional when they see him, and then I got recognized, and the guy's like, "Dude?" Just a little different, but, uh, no, he was, he took us all around, he was, he's an incredible tour guide.

• 1:15Mark Normand?

Isn't it funny when you see another comic overseas, you're like, "Ah!", you come on to him, it's like, it's like seeing an ambassador or something.

• 1:22Sam Morril?

Well, I saw Seinfeld in Paris.

• 1:23Mark Normand?

  Wow, yeah, there you go.

• 1:24Sam Morril?

  That was incredible.

• 1:24Mark Normand?

  That's the biggest, boy.

• 1:26Sam Morril?

Yeah, you're just like, not who you expect to run into and have a night out with, but...

• 1:30Mark Normand?

And he reached out to you!

• 1:31Sam Morril?

His wife did. It felt, it felt like his wife set us up on a blind date.

• 1:34Mark Normand?

  Was she on Raya?

• 1:37Sam Morril?

She, uh, she set us up, we're all hanging out, and, uh, great hang, but then it's like, you know, we all are doing like the, the fun group talk.

• 1:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:45Sam Morril?

But then it turns into comedy nerd mode, and we're just like, "Dzzzzzzz".

• 1:49Mark Normand?

"See ya, sister, we gotta talk comedy." There it is, wow, look at that.

• 1:53Sam Morril?

Yeah, we had a good time.

• 1:54Mark Normand?

Seinfeld hang in Paris, sounds like one of these, uh, like, vision board things, you know?

• 1:58Sam Morril?

We had a great night, yeah, talking comedy for hours, loved it, man, just, uh, awesome.

• 2:03Mark Normand?

Wow, that's great, look, what is that, hotel, is that his place?

• 2:06Sam Morril?

No, they picked a cool hotel bar that, this is, this is such a smooth move on their end. First off, they paid before we could even find the bill.

• 2:13Mark Normand?

  That's how they catch ya.

• 2:14Sam Morril?

The other move, uh, I told her where I was staying, and she picked the place walking distance away.

• 2:19Mark Normand?

  Oh!

• 2:20Sam Morril?

Just a classy move all around.

• 2:22Mark Normand?

  Pro move.

• 2:23Sam Morril?

  Pro move.

• 2:23Mark Normand?

Man, did you, did you discuss Zoran?

• 2:28Mark Normand?

  The talk of the town.

• 2:29Sam Morril?

We had a, we had a great night, man. It was, it was fantastic. It was a-

• 2:32Mark Normand?

  Incredible.

• 2:33Sam Morril?

Lot of, lot of like old school comedy talk, like Robert Klein, fucking Carlin Pryor. Then we did like the new age Geraldo talking like all over the map. Loved it.

• 2:43Mark Normand?

Wow. So cool. I'm hanging out with Sean Murphy. Boo. Come on. No, Murphy's great.

• 2:48Sam Morril?

Well, we take, you know, and they, I brought my friend Chase with me and they, they loved Chase. You know, Chase's mom's a social worker, Seinfeld, Jessica Seinfeld's mom's a social worker they're talking about. So we do all these group pictures after.

• 3:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 3:00Sam Morril?

You know, I take one with Jerry, then all three, then me, Chase and Jerry. Then at the end Chase goes, "All right, now, now mom's with social workers." Got a big laugh out of them. I was like, "All right, he's fucking, he's cooking."

• 3:11Mark Normand?

Thank God. When you have the, the side friend who gets a laugh, you're like, "All right, he's accepted too."

• 3:16Sam Morril?

I wouldn't bring him if I didn't believe in him.

• 3:17Mark Normand?

Yes, yes. Well, uh, how do you offer the photo? How do you, how does that come up? Do you go-

• 3:23Sam Morril?

I think Chase brought it up, which is nice, because I don't want to bring up, I don't want to do that.

• 3:27Mark Normand?

I had to get a photo with him once. I said, "I'm only doing this to help sell the beacon." He was like, "All right." So he got that.

• 3:32Sam Morril?

You should have said, "Cause I value you as a friend."

• 3:34Mark Normand?

Ah, I didn't want to do-

• 3:36Sam Morril?

That's so much worse to say, "I'm using you for tickets."

• 3:38Mark Normand?

  Well, I guess you're right. Well, we're friends. I wouldn't go, "Hey, I value you as a friend. Let's get a photo."

• 3:44Sam Morril?

No, you would just say, "Let's take a photo."

• 3:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 3:48Sam Morril?

Or you could just say, "Yeah, like, let's get a photo."

• 3:50Mark Normand?

Yeah. Now, did you get any blowback? Hey, you hanging out with the Zionist here?

• 3:55Sam Morril?

  I don't fucking know.

• 3:56Mark Normand?

Good. Who cares? It's, uh, it's all over. Hamas is-

• 4:00Sam Morril?

You can't reduce people to one word who have contributed this much to comedy. Come on.

• 4:05Mark Normand?

I, I've been saying that about Michael Richards.

• 4:06Sam Morril?

  I know.

• 4:09Sam Morril?

  I've been saying about Cosby.

• 4:10Mark Normand?

Yeah. That was more of an action. But yeah. Wow. So cool. What lives we have. We're sitting here going, "Oh, oh, I was in Rome. Oh, sorry, I was in Athens."

• 4:20Sam Morril?

  Oh dude, Milan. Crazy.

• 4:22Mark Normand?

Yeah, well, I got to, oh wow, Milan. I want to hear about that.

• 4:25Sam Morril?

  Oh my God.

• 4:26Mark Normand?

So I get to Riyadh. I do the show. I'm there seven hours. I fly out, through the night.

• 4:31Sam Morril?

Literally, it's the movie The Town. You just-

• 4:33Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 4:34Sam Morril?

You have a mask on, you have a duffel bag.

• 4:36Mark Normand?

Yeah. Hit one woman, I got a child bride, I got out of there. And then I landed in Athens on no sleep, I'm on like an hour's sleep. I get an Uber and then my wife and baby are at the hotel and I'm like, I felt like the la- I got out of the last chopper of Vietnam and I made it to the family.

• 4:51Sam Morril?

  It's Indiana Jones.

• 4:52Mark Normand?

  Yes, yeah.

• 4:52Sam Morril?

I really did feel like it was that meme where you're just like, you say the wrong thing and they're all chasing you and you're like, "Start the plane."

• 4:57Mark Normand?

Yes, exactly. It's that Curry swords.

• 5:00Sam Morril?

I had the same thing but with Barcelona, but I, dude, I got so sick in Barcelona, I did the show, but I was sick as a fucking dog. And did the show, then had to go to the hospital.

• 5:09Mark Normand?

  Oh, what?

• 5:10Sam Morril?

In Barcelona and they're, and they're, it's some shitty hospital, they're like not speaking English.

• 5:14Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 5:14Sam Morril?

I know I should know better Spanish, but.

• 5:16Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 5:17Sam Morril?

But I'm like, this is not a good situation to be in.

• 5:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah, what happened?

• 5:20Sam Morril?

Well, I was like, I think this is the flu, so let me just get Tamiflu so I can knock it out.

• 5:24Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 5:24Sam Morril?

So you gotta go to the hospital to get that.

• 5:26Mark Normand?

  Oh, I didn't know that.

• 5:26Sam Morril?

Yeah, and then urgent care or something, but it was like late night, I didn't want to cancel the show. How often am I in Barcelona?

• 5:32Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 5:33Sam Morril?

But, uh, yeah, I had to fight through that one. I had to stay an extra day in Barcelona because I was so fucking sick.

• 5:37Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 5:38Sam Morril?

Just banging out movies in the hotel room.

• 5:39Mark Normand?

Did you see the city at all? Because it's a great city.

• 5:41Sam Morril?

A little bit, but that was the one I had to kind of sacrifice because I was just so fucking ill.

• 5:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 5:46Sam Morril?

And then, and then I'm like trying to get better while also binge drinking every night and traveling every couple of days. And it's that thing where I'd be like chugging a beer, then I'd be in the bathroom and I'd be like, "Bwah," and I cough out green phlegm into the sink.

• 5:56Mark Normand?

  Oh, man.

• 5:57Sam Morril?

  Just a, just a pig.

• 5:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 5:59Sam Morril?

  But I, you know.

• 6:00Mark Normand?

Probably start putting a little bodega in the Tamiflu, you know, mix it all up.

• 6:03Sam Morril?

I was really, no, but it turned out it wasn't the flu, but it was just like a fucking nasty viral thing and I was like, I was better in a few days, but it, it stuck with me for probably like a week.

• 6:12Mark Normand?

Damn, well, the booze will keep it on you.

• 6:15Sam Morril?

  The booze, man.

• 6:16Mark Normand?

But yeah, Athens is incredible, the ruins, the show was insane, all the crowds were great, Sweden was the best crowd.

• 6:22Sam Morril?

  Stockholm gets it, man.

• 6:23Mark Normand?

  They get it.

• 6:24Sam Morril?

  They get it.

• 6:25Mark Normand?

  Beautiful city, my god.

• 6:26Sam Morril?

  Chicks too.

• 6:27Mark Normand?

Oh, the women, they're all six foot eight and blonde and just.

• 6:30Sam Morril?

  Oh my god.

• 6:31Mark Normand?

Blue eyed, pure white snow. Unbelievable.

• 6:34Sam Morril?

We'd have to take it there, but yes, they're very attractive women.

• 6:37Mark Normand?

Yeah, I get the Ikea thing.

• 6:39Sam Morril?

No, they're very hot and, uh, and the crowds are great, Scandinavian crowds, man, they just get it.

• 6:43Mark Normand?

They are great. Well, Finland was a little.

• 6:45Sam Morril?

They're tough. I've never done Helsinki.

• 6:47Mark Normand?

Helsinki is a cool city. It's very pretty and organized and clean, but the crowds are very like efficient. They're like, mm, we like that one.

• 6:55Sam Morril?

That's the funny part. It's like Milan, they laugh, but then you do like three Holocaust jokes in a row and they're like, they all applaud as a group.

• 7:01Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 7:02Sam Morril?

This is such a strange form of comedy. Like, I feel like I'm doing like a TED Talk, kind of.

• 7:06Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 7:06Sam Morril?

It's not how, but, uh, but they were very nice.

• 7:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah. Amsterdam's kinda like that.

• 7:11Sam Morril?

  Amsterdam's kinda tough.

• 7:12Mark Normand?

  They're kinda tough.

• 7:13Sam Morril?

  I can't, you know, here's a little peeve. Amsterdam.

• 7:16Mark Normand?

  Yeah, what happened?

• 7:17Sam Morril?

I got some peeves. They're not in expressive people.

• 7:19Mark Normand?

  Yes, exactly.

• 7:21Sam Morril?

You know, it's like you sell a lot of tickets there, so you're excited.

• 7:23Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 7:23Sam Morril?

And then, because they're big comedy fans, but then you do the show and you're like, that's it? What the fuck?

• 7:28Mark Normand?

I know. I'm like, that's my best stuff.

• 7:30Sam Morril?

And then you get off and they're like, it was amazing. You're like, tell your face. I'm dying up here.

• 7:35Mark Normand?

I always say it's like the girl you bang and you're like, oh, I'm kinda not doing well. Then later she was like, that was awesome. Give me a moan.

• 7:41Sam Morril?

Give me something. You gotta give me something. Not to mention, these people are on bikes the whole time.

• 7:45Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 7:46Sam Morril?

Don't go to a booty call at 2 a.m. Like, I'll get on the bike. Everything's on a bike there and it's right, and the roads are literally two feet.

• 7:52Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 7:53Sam Morril?

So you're like, you know, it's like a Mini Cooper whizzing by, then a bike, then you're like, you're like, I gotta, I gotta like walk like sideways.

• 7:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, I know. It's a tight town.

• 8:01Sam Morril?

  And the weather's tough.

• 8:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah, weather can kill you.

• 8:04Sam Morril?

They really had legalized weed and now that other places have it, they've lost a little bit of, it's still a fun city.

• 8:10Mark Normand?

  Yeah, it's pretty.

• 8:11Sam Morril?

But the problem is like, I'm not a planner and there are two big attractions, the Van Gogh Museum and the Anne Frank House.

• 8:16Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 8:16Sam Morril?

You gotta plan that one out like six weeks.

• 8:18Mark Normand?

I did the same thing. I got to Van Gogh. They're like, are you crazy? This is two months booked.

• 8:22Sam Morril?

Yeah. I've been there before. It's sick. It's amazing.

• 8:25Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 8:25Sam Morril?

But yeah, I wish I, the National Institute, the National Art Institute in Berlin was insane. They got the Warhol, the Elvis one. They got, uh, they got like, they got Picasso's. They've got like, Gerard Richter's this huge German artist. And he's like 94 and he's still going.

• 8:41Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 8:41Sam Morril?

And his shit's incredible. And then they had, they, I mean, the Berlin Art Institute, it's legit.

• 8:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 8:46Sam Morril?

But then, but they're glossing over some periods of history. They're like, in 1945, 42 to 45, some weird stuff happened. Anyway, in 46. There was a big boom and you're like huh.

• 8:58Mark Normand?

I know, I went to the history museum in Berlin and I got there right at the wire and they were like pushing me out. They're like, hey, get out of here, you gotta go, the train's scheduled. I'm like, you gotta be a real Nazi about this museum here.

• 9:08Sam Morril?

You guys have a history of pushing people on trains.

• 9:09Mark Normand?

Yeah, exactly. So, uh, yeah, loved it, loved the trip. Now, at what point do you go, cause you're seeing beautiful things, you're flying all over the world, jet setting, art, crowds, history, but at what point do you go, I kinda am ready to get back?

• 9:24Sam Morril?

I think literally right at the end.

• 9:26Mark Normand?

  Alright, that's good.

• 9:26Sam Morril?

Cause I was actually having so much fun and the bars in every city were so, I mean, it is funny though, cause I'm more of like a, like I'm more of a New York, Dublin, Liverpool type drinker than I am like Milan. Like, I like the communal thing of a bar.

• 9:41Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 9:41Sam Morril?

Where we're all just hanging in a bar together, you can kinda bullshit with people, you have your friend, but you can kinda have a chat.

• 9:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 9:46Sam Morril?

Whereas like Milan, it's just you're like at a table outside.

• 9:49Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 9:49Sam Morril?

You're with your own group and I don't like that. I kinda like the, I like the idea that I can meet someone at a bar.

• 9:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah, of course, of course.

• 9:54Sam Morril?

So, uh, yeah, Dublin's great, that's always fun. Uh, but then Liverpool was like, that was like on another level. That was like the best that I had on the tour. The Hot Water Comedy Club, that's, that was the only club I did and it was like on fire.

• 10:08Mark Normand?

Wow, you don't hear about Liverpool ever. You hear about the Beatles and that's it.

• 10:11Sam Morril?

Dude, the women in Liverpool are gorgeous.

• 10:14Mark Normand?

  What, Jewish women?

• 10:15Sam Morril?

They're like the opposite of London women. They're like, they're hotter, but they think they're not hot.

• 10:20Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's great.

• 10:21Sam Morril?

  And it's like, it's insane.

• 10:23Mark Normand?

Wow, so is it like a blue collar town?

• 10:25Sam Morril?

  Yeah, I think it is.

• 10:26Mark Normand?

  Okay, okay.

• 10:26Sam Morril?

But they, but they have the soccer team and they're, dude, it was like, I met this woman there, we had this like amazing night, she was so cool. And it was to the point where we're both hammered at like 4am and I was like, you should come to London with me.

• 10:37Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 10:37Sam Morril?

And she was like, alright, I'm coming. And I was like, okay, wow, alright. So, she goes, I'm gonna come with you. And then, there was like, it died down for a second, she goes, are you gonna human traffic me?

• 10:47Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 10:47Sam Morril?

What? I was like, no. And my friend Chase goes, no, he's got like a good career back in America. And I was like, hey, that's not why we're not trafficking women. You can't say, so I was like, I think I could do a bit about this, cause what happened next was, um.

• 10:58Mark Normand?

  You trafficked her?

• 10:59Sam Morril?

  I trafficked her, yeah.

• 11:00Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 11:01Sam Morril?

But, uh, no, but the next morning, like, she's like, "I'm gonna come." And then the next morning, she didn't meet me at the train station. She goes, "I'm not coming." And I wrote back, "The trafficking?" She goes, "Yeah, I'm just, I'm too scared." And I was like, I said, "That's the problem with women in their twenties. They're still scared of getting trafficked." I need a woman my age because they know their trafficking years are long behind. You know, they're like, because if you're trafficking women and you're bringing home like a forty-year-old, I think that the head trafficker's like, "Can I see you in my office for a sec? We're letting you go."

• 11:27Mark Normand?

This damage good. Yeah, this fruit is old.

• 11:30Sam Morril?

But, uh, no, yeah, she did. But then she's messaging me all week. She's like, "My grandma said I should have come." I'm like, "She told your grandma? What's happening?"

• 11:36Mark Normand?

  Ah, weird.

• 11:37Sam Morril?

And then she like went to see a tarot card reader. And he was like, yeah. I was like, "Well, I don't know what's happened." But she was still messaging me the whole trip. But it was, we had a fun night. It was still fun.

• 11:45Mark Normand?

Very romantic. That's fun shit. We're just like impulsive like that.

• 11:48Sam Morril?

  I love to be impulsive.

• 11:49Mark Normand?

  I do too.

• 11:49Sam Morril?

You're in Europe, what are you gonna do?

• 11:51Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 11:52Sam Morril?

The UK is fun. And, uh, you know, London, London, did you go to London this time or no?

• 11:56Mark Normand?

  I went in like May.

• 11:57Sam Morril?

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 11:58Mark Normand?

And had a blast. I went to Wales, London, all that shit.

• 12:01Sam Morril?

Where else did you hit this time besides Finland?

• 12:02Mark Normand?

  Finland, Sweden, Oslo.

• 12:05Sam Morril?

Oslo's pretty cool. Do you eat anything weird in Oslo?

• 12:07Mark Normand?

I had reindeer and I had some, uh, I had, I just ate a ton of fish. And it was all great. Fish is their thing.

• 12:13Sam Morril?

Any whale sashimi? They do weird shit over there.

• 12:16Mark Normand?

I know, they love whale, they love reindeer.

• 12:18Sam Morril?

  Doesn't taste good though, either.

• 12:20Mark Normand?

  No, more saunas than cars.

• 12:22Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 12:23Mark Normand?

  In Scandinavia, fun fact.

• 12:24Sam Morril?

  I mean, saunas are great.

• 12:25Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 12:26Sam Morril?

  I love a sauna, I love a sauna culture.

• 12:27Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 12:28Sam Morril?

A lot of my hotel, a lot of, a lot of my hotels had saunas. And I was like, "Man, this is saving me from the hangover."

• 12:33Mark Normand?

  Oh, totally.

• 12:34Sam Morril?

I would just force the gym every day, even if it was like thirty minutes. Because I was like, yeah, I had, I had twelve beers last night. I should probably.

• 12:39Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 12:40Sam Morril?

Do the rower for fifteen minutes. Like, that's, like, that's breaking even.

• 12:43Mark Normand?

Yeah, yeah, no, it's better than nothing.

• 12:46Sam Morril?

  Something, yeah.

• 12:46Mark Normand?

So, did you, did you have a little bit of relief? Because everybody's all impulsive at the, at the thirteenth drink and the four o'clock in the morning. But if she was like, "I'm not coming on the train," I'd be like... That's probably for the best.

• 12:58Sam Morril?

I was, it wasn't like relief, but I was like, it's fun. I don't care. It's like, I mean, it would have been fun, but I was also like, we're going to new adventure. Like, it's almost like a video game and it's like game over and you're like, alright, well, start a new life. You just have to keep, you just have to keep the energy up. Cause I think like, you know, I'm traveling with a good friend of mine and it's like, for me, it's like, just keep morale high the whole time. No, no sulky, no bad moods. Just keep the energy good. And I think we did. I think it was, it was a good trip and uh.

• 13:23Mark Normand?

  Nice.

• 13:23Sam Morril?

Trying to think what else was killer.

• 13:25Mark Normand?

  Any missed flights?

• 13:26Sam Morril?

No, but, but we did have a canceled train, which was pretty annoying. It was actually the one she bailed on, so I got my money back.

• 13:33Mark Normand?

  Whoa!

• 13:33Sam Morril?

So that was actually, I was like, hey, maybe this was meant to be. The Jew in me is really coming out. I'm like, I could have met the love of my life. I'm like, free train ticket, alright.

• 13:42Mark Normand?

Trying to think what else happened. Yeah, if I had any crazy moments. A lot of crazy flights.

• 13:48Sam Morril?

  You miss anything?

• 13:49Mark Normand?

  What?

• 13:50Sam Morril?

How long was May and the baby with you?

• 13:52Mark Normand?

Uh, just Athens and then they flew back. Cause just bopping around, uh, six nights.

• 13:56Sam Morril?

  That hotel's sick.

• 13:57Mark Normand?

  Great hotel.

• 13:58Sam Morril?

The one where you see the Acropolis from, from the fucking breakfast?

• 14:01Mark Normand?

  The roof, yeah.

• 14:01Sam Morril?

I stayed there once. It's insane.

• 14:03Mark Normand?

Insane. And that neighborhood's great. We hit all the cafes.

• 14:05Sam Morril?

And you hit Wolf, Wolf Nights. What's it called? Wolf?

• 14:07Mark Normand?

Yeah, we did. I took the mother-in-law there. Uh, Wolfish, Wolfface.

• 14:12Sam Morril?

  Wolf something in Athens.

• 14:14Mark Normand?

Wall Street. I can't remember. Yeah. Sea Wolf.

• 14:16Sam Morril?

  Sea Wolf.

• 14:17Mark Normand?

  Sea Wolf.

• 14:17Sam Morril?

That place is like off the beaten path, but it's incredible, right?

• 14:20Mark Normand?

Yeah, we walked there, then walked home. That neighborhood was awesome.

• 14:24Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 14:24Mark Normand?

Uh, Athens has got some stank on it too.

• 14:27Sam Morril?

I love it. It's kinda dirty and fun.

• 14:29Mark Normand?

Yeah, it's gritty. Um, yeah, we had a blast. So I went down to the train station to catch the train and not one piece of garbage, no graffiti, not one rat. It's crazy.

• 14:40Sam Morril?

Well, you know what's weird? There's no garbage, but also I feel like there's no garbage cans in any of these places. Are they just holding their shit?

• 14:45Mark Normand?

I looked this up. You actually have less litter with less cans. It's one of these weird human nature psychological things. So I don't know what that's about, but yeah.

• 14:54Sam Morril?

  There is no littering.

• 14:56Mark Normand?

  No littering.

• 14:56Sam Morril?

  It's crazy.

• 14:57Mark Normand?

They do have graffiti over there, but uh.

• 14:59Sam Morril?

  A lot about my people.

• 15:02Sam Morril?

But they, uh, yeah, I'll tell you, you know what? I gotta pee for the, uh. In Europe, there's a lot of the ATMs, they suck up the card.

• 15:09Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's scary.

• 15:10Sam Morril?

I don't let the card suck because I'm traveling with an ATM. I'm like, I need, I need access to cash.

• 15:14Mark Normand?

  Yeah, you gotta have cash.

• 15:15Sam Morril?

And, and I hate the suck up. I'm always like, fuck, are they gonna give it back? It's like the opposite of a blowjob. When, when they swallow, it's bad.

• 15:21Mark Normand?

Right, right. Yeah, spit it out.

• 15:24Sam Morril?

Spit it out. I, I, because one time it sucked it up and I was on a tour and I, I lost my card.

• 15:29Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 15:29Sam Morril?

But it's like, you gotta know, I'm booking, I'm booking all this shit here. I should be here. You're looking at my other.

• 15:34Mark Normand?

Of course, of course. I gotta pee for you. No drip coffee. I'm sick of it.

• 15:39Sam Morril?

  I'm with you.

• 15:40Mark Normand?

I'm sick of the flat white. I'm sick of the, the latte. Give me a drip where you can just pour it out of a pitcher.

• 15:45Sam Morril?

  The Americano sucks.

• 15:46Mark Normand?

  It sucks.

• 15:47Sam Morril?

  It's just lazy.

• 15:48Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 15:49Sam Morril?

At least at cappuccino, there's like, okay, it's like the milk, I get it, but, but just water and espresso.

• 15:54Mark Normand?

I know, water, ugh. And then I would ask for milk and they'd be like, oh, milk, look at this pussy.

• 15:58Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 15:59Mark Normand?

All right. You don't know what you're doing.

• 16:00Sam Morril?

No, you, you get excited too, because you get to like a Pret at a train station. You're like, they'll have it. No, they don't even fucking have it.

• 16:06Mark Normand?

  No, they don't have it.

• 16:07Sam Morril?

Give me a fucking drip coffee.

• 16:08Mark Normand?

Yeah. And then when you're at a restaurant, you want the repor, like at a breakfast, but they can't do a repor. They gotta make a whole new bullshit.

• 16:15Sam Morril?

Um, dude, I'm with you. This is like, see, they look down upon us.

• 16:18Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 16:18Sam Morril?

Like we're like this trash, because I like a good diner, like four refills, but that's what I like. And if the coffee's a little weaker, but you're just like, it's the ritual of it.

• 16:29Mark Normand?

Exactly, exactly. So I'm making Keurigs at, at hotels.

• 16:32Sam Morril?

  I can't do that.

• 16:33Mark Normand?

I'll take a Keurig because at least it's drip.

• 16:35Sam Morril?

  It's just fucking nasty though.

• 16:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 16:37Sam Morril?

  Tastes like shit.

• 16:38Mark Normand?

  Got one right here.

• 16:39Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 16:39Mark Normand?

  It's not great, but.

• 16:41Sam Morril?

But, uh, yeah, no, I, it, it, it bums me out that the no, but, you know, they look down upon us in these other countries. Like some other countries are fine with us, but we were in a bar in Berlin and my buddy Chase is just going up to chicks, trying to meet them. And the second he says American, they're like, ugh. And it's like, hey, Germany, you've made a few mistakes in your day too. Maybe forgiveness?

• 17:02Mark Normand?

And I love when they ask me like, what's up with the tariffs? I'm like, I didn't do it.

• 17:05Sam Morril?

  I know.

• 17:05Mark Normand?

I didn't vote for the guy. I didn't set the policy. Like, what do you want from me?

• 17:09Sam Morril?

No, they, uh, they love to let us have it. And then, but then you have like that weird kind of like. American pride, you know, you're gone, you're like, no, fuck you. We got a lot of cool shit going on in America, too.

• 17:19Mark Normand?

It's the big brother syndrome. I can make fun of it, but you can't make fun of it.

• 17:21Sam Morril?

  Exactly.

• 17:22Mark Normand?

Yeah, so you wanna throw up, what's up with Gerard Depardieu? That guy sucked, you know, fuck you, France.

• 17:27Sam Morril?

Yeah, you guys, that guy looks like shit. Have you seen Gerard Depardieu lately?

• 17:32Mark Normand?

  No.

• 17:33Sam Morril?

He claims he drinks 12 bottles of wine a day.

• 17:34Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 17:35Sam Morril?

  12. And I'm like, no, and then you see a picture, you're like, oh, he might drink 15.

• 17:39Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 17:40Sam Morril?

This guy looks horrible. Look at him, look at that nose.

• 17:43Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 17:43Sam Morril?

That's an alcoholic, you ever seen alcoholic's nose?

• 17:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 17:46Sam Morril?

I mean, geez, talk about reindeer.

• 17:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 17:48Sam Morril?

This guy looks like Rudolph, that red fucking nose.

• 17:50Mark Normand?

I hate to, this is their Artie Lang.

• 17:53Mark Normand?

  Holy shit.

• 17:54Sam Morril?

That guy's a monster. It's weird to look like shit, but then still have like kinda nice hair.

• 17:58Mark Normand?

I know, and it's got like a velvet blazer on. Look at the young Depardieu.

• 18:02Sam Morril?

Yeah, he was a honk. He was like their De Niro, man.

• 18:04Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 18:06Sam Morril?

What, uh, where else did you hit?

• 18:08Mark Normand?

Uh, let's see, Finland was cool, Oslo was cool. Some of these cities, you land and you're like, I need a, I need a minute. So you like sit in the hotel room and jerk off and look at your phone, and you kinda miss the whole thing. Um, so Finland, I didn't see too much of, but I had a fish soup there that was unbelievable. I asked the hotel guy, like, what's your thing? And he goes, we got a fish soup, it's great. I go, fish soup?

• 18:28Sam Morril?

  You're a soup guy, though.

• 18:30Mark Normand?

Love soup. I went to the first place, across the street, I got a fish soup. It was unbelievable. They put a dollop of mustard on top.

• 18:36Sam Morril?

  Ooh.

• 18:37Mark Normand?

And it's like salmon with a good gooey lemon broth. It's incredible.

• 18:42Sam Morril?

That's like that Greek soup with the, uh, the chicken, the lemon and the egg.

• 18:45Mark Normand?

Yes, it's very similar to that. There it is. Oh my god, it's incredible.

• 18:50Sam Morril?

That's so, so cause you're such a soup guy, do you have a higher bar for what constitutes a good soup? Or are you kinda just like, no, I'm just happy to have a soup?

• 18:56Mark Normand?

No, I think I'm, I got a bar, I got a bar. And this was a well-made soup, and it was like their delicacy. Also, the crowd was a little tough in Finland. I think I didn't, I don't think I bombed, but they just don't give a lot. And a guy yelled out, why don't more comics come here? And I go, you heard the reaction. This is why, you guys don't laugh at shit.

• 19:15Sam Morril?

Yeah, I got that and I think, uh, in Amsterdam and I was like, they're like, "You played Riyadh?" And I'm like, "Do you want to start with the new fuckers?"

• 19:22Mark Normand?

Yeah, and I'm not gonna say any names, but last time I did Amsterdam, the Booker, or the owner of the theater, whatever, was like, "Gotta tell you, we had three very major prominent comedians here and they all had a meltdown on the audience here."

• 19:35Sam Morril?

  In which place?

• 19:36Mark Normand?

  In Amsterdam.

• 19:37Sam Morril?

Amsterdam's like, it's fine, but you want, it's funny, cause like, my closure was killing everywhere and it did like, fine. And it sucks to get off on fine.

• 19:45Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 19:46Sam Morril?

They were fine. It wasn't awful, but I got off like, "Yeah, I was not..." Cause it's funny, I was dreading that Paris was gonna be that. And Paris hadn't turned up being great.

• 19:54Mark Normand?

Yeah, yeah, Paris kicked it up a notch. I think 10 years ago, that was a tough audience.

• 19:58Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 19:58Mark Normand?

  And now they're cool.

• 19:59Sam Morril?

Yeah, no, everything else was great, um, but I'm trying to think where else I hit. Yeah, I mean, uh, Berlin is like Williamsburg, basically. But in a good way, like, they laugh hard. I met all these cool Polish comedians, like, so many Polish comedians came out to the show, so I was, you know, chopping it up with them after the show. They're all really cool. They got a scene in Poland, so I'm gonna go to Poland.

• 20:17Mark Normand?

Oh, I would love to go. Warsaw?

• 20:19Sam Morril?

And Krakow, I hear, is amazing.

• 20:20Mark Normand?

Oh, easy. That's a lot of history there.

• 20:24Sam Morril?

And then, uh, I wanna go to, uh, I should've hit Munich while I was in Germany.

• 20:28Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah, I hear that's pretty. We got, look, we got a lo- a whole world ahead of us. We got all these new places to hit.

• 20:34Sam Morril?

Yeah, I was talking to Louis last night and he gave me like, a long list of all these other, he's like, "You've never been to, you know, Budapest? You've never been to Sofia?" I'm like, "I don't even know where Sofia is, but I'll go." Uh, but he gave me a long list of all these places, like, he's like, "These will be great." And I'm like, "All right."

• 20:49Mark Normand?

  All right, great.

• 20:50Sam Morril?

  I took him down.

• 20:51Mark Normand?

And we've never done South America.

• 20:53Sam Morril?

  I know.

• 20:54Mark Normand?

Actually, I did San, what's that place called? What's the big one in Brazil?

• 20:59Sam Morril?

  Oh, uh...

• 21:01Mark Normand?

  No, not Brazil.

• 21:01Sam Morril?

  Is this Sao Paulo?

• 21:02Mark Normand?

No, not Brazil. Car, car, ca, ga, shit. It's two words. I don't know why I'm blanking on this.

• 21:10Sam Morril?

Oh, Jesus, you sounded like Drew Lynch for a second there.

• 21:12Mark Normand?

I'm like Mitch McConnell in here. Um, what the hell's that place called? Carlo? Huh? No, is that a place? I'll think of-

• 21:22Sam Morril?

  You do Argentina?

• 21:23Mark Normand?

  No, no.

• 21:24Sam Morril?

I feel like Buenos Aires, we could probably do alright.

• 21:26Mark Normand?

That's true. They say it's the New York of, uh, South America.

• 21:29Sam Morril?

They say everything's in New York. Everything's in New York of say, you're just like, this is not-

• 21:33Mark Normand?

Yeah. San Jose, no, that's in California. Sounds like that, though.

• 21:38Sam Morril?

You did Rooster Teeth Feathers in South America?

• 21:41Mark Normand?

Yeah. It was, it was at a bar. My friends set the whole thing up and we just flew down there and stayed in a house on the water.

• 21:47Sam Morril?

Sometimes that's like, you have a better time. Like, that's another thing Louis was saying is like, I don't want, they offered me these huge venues in like Japan. He's like, I just want to have a good show, do 800 seats. I was like, yeah, I kinda get, like, look, money is cool and all, but like, you want to love the trip and you want to love the show and you want, you want to feel good about the show, the people.

• 22:05Mark Normand?

I completely agree. Like, sometimes they put you in these like, 1500 seaters and you're whole, you're sweating the tickets the whole time. You're like, you're ruining my trip.

• 22:11Sam Morril?

  I know.

• 22:12Mark Normand?

Just put me in a, in an 800 and we'd sell two, great.

• 22:15Sam Morril?

Yeah, it does suck to walk into a huge cavernous venue that is undersold.

• 22:20Mark Normand?

I know, I know. Especially like a random faraway place. Cause you already feel-

• 22:24Sam Morril?

  You feel like a failure.

• 22:25Mark Normand?

Yeah, exactly. And you're like, I flew here for this?

• 22:28Sam Morril?

Yeah, but, uh, I would definitely hit back all these places, I think, for sure.

• 22:32Mark Normand?

Yeah. Oh, yeah. Comedy's poppin', baby. It's all over the world, thanks to the internet.

• 22:36Sam Morril?

It's fun. Just like, man, I ended up at a bar in Amsterdam that was like, it just, it was like all natural wine. I just got fucking hammered on natural wine. And, you know what the thing is? I've convinced myself you don't get a hangover from natural wine, so I think I have like an extra six glasses.

• 22:50Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 22:50Sam Morril?

And then I'm like, wow, I'm really fucking hungover. Turns out if you drink enough alcohol, you will still have a bad hangover.

• 22:56Mark Normand?

Thousand percent. Every, every elixir, pill, hey, try this when you're done drinking, it'll save you. None of that shit works. And I tried, hey, clear tequila, you're safe. I'm like, no, I get a hangover on everything.

• 23:08Sam Morril?

Is that what, that's your go-to on, when you travel? A lot of beer, too.

• 23:11Mark Normand?

A lot of beer. That's, I, I don't love all the beer. I like beer, but it's like pint after pint after pint. You're like, and I'm like, give me a martini. I had the worst martini I've ever had in Athens. And I just guzzled it down. It tasted like fucking vinegar.

• 23:24Sam Morril?

That's a good, great start to a story. The worst martini of my life. Dude, I tell you, I had like so many beers in Berlin. And I was fighting this cold too, the whole trip. So, you know, my body's rebelling against me. I woke up two mornings. So, you know, when you're like, okay, I got five hours. I can get five hours of sleep. I'm on the flight, I'll be okay. I'm gonna be hungover, but five hours I can do. I wake up an hour before I'm supposed to wake up with the worst fucking cramp right here. I'm like, ah! You're just screaming, just like, ah! Alone in my room screaming.

• 23:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 23:52Sam Morril?

I get out of bed, I finally stop it here. Then it picks up here, I'm like, ah! My body, I feel like I'm fucking like morphing into something. Just like, ah, wolf man.

• 24:00Mark Normand?

And there's the one guy, have a banana! Yeah, I got a banana next to the bed. It was in my ass.

• 24:04Sam Morril?

And by the way, I did have a banana.

• 24:06Mark Normand?

  Oh!

• 24:06Sam Morril?

The next day, and the next night, guess what happened? Same shit. I woke up two straight nights with the worst fucking leg cramps for like 30 minutes.

• 24:14Mark Normand?

  Damn!

• 24:14Sam Morril?

It was hell. And I was just like, oh, if I just got that extra hour, I would have been okay.

• 24:18Mark Normand?

Yeah, at least when you have a cramp, it like gets you up. Like you kind of wake up.

• 24:22Sam Morril?

  I hate it.

• 24:23Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's like...

• 24:24Sam Morril?

I had it once, I had a girl over and I got one. And it was our first night together after we had talked on the phone a bunch.

• 24:29Mark Normand?

  Oh, boy.

• 24:30Sam Morril?

And she slept over. And it's like, that thing was like, she's like, wow, this was like a good night. And then at 4 a.m. I wake up like, ah! And she's like, he's gonna kill me, what the fuck? Ah! She was screaming, she's like, ah! I was like, no, my fucking leg!

• 24:41Mark Normand?

  I'm getting traffic.

• 24:44Mark Normand?

  It's happening!

• 24:48Sam Morril?

  Yeah, man.

• 24:48Mark Normand?

  That's you.

• 24:49Sam Morril?

Oh dude, I was the wolf man. It's like, fucking brutal.

• 24:52Mark Normand?

Yeah, that cramp is it. The only way to get rid of it is walk around.

• 24:56Sam Morril?

  Oh, dude.

• 24:57Mark Normand?

But hey, it's good to be back. Boy, when you land back on American soil, you're like, phew, I'm home, baby.

• 25:02Sam Morril?

Yeah, cuz you did a lot. I was gone for like a month. I left, my routing was brutal. I started in like, I threw a couple nights in Chicago and then it was like, three nights in Chicago. Then Winnipeg, and then it's like coming back here, then, and it's like, fuck, all these connect flights. You're just like, by the end, you're just like, no wonder you get sick.

• 25:19Mark Normand?

Yeah, the connections, like I had to connect to go to Riyadh, I had to connect to Istanbul. I was on the wrong side of the airport. I had to run, I'm sweating, I had a jacket on, jeans, I got horrible B.O. I take my jacket off and I was all embarrassed. And then I realized, you're gonna have B.O. Middle Eastern flight, pretty good. Then I tried to get an Uber when I landed and they don't have Uber there, which blew my mind.

• 25:40Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 25:40Mark Normand?

Every Uber driver here is Middle Eastern, you know? But over there, they don't even have it. I was like, this is your thing! But they sent the guy to pick me up. But yeah, good times, good times. Glad to be back. But my agent wanted me to do all these European dates for like two months. I was like, break it up. I have a child.

• 25:56Sam Morril?

Yeah, you have a baby, dude. I mean, for me, I'm kinda like, eh, I got nothing at home. I, I, a part of me is like, I kinda wanna go back out. I got, I, I, I arrived like kinda energized. I was like, I feel fucking like good. I don't know.

• 26:06Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 26:07Sam Morril?

I mean, it's weird to drink for sixteen nights straight and be like, I feel great.

• 26:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 26:12Sam Morril?

  But I kinda do.

• 26:13Mark Normand?

But then you start wondering, is their food healthier? Maybe like your body was like, eh, this is nice. We're having real bread, real vegetables.

• 26:19Sam Morril?

The amount of bread I ate, like every meal was a fucking sandwich. Like, you, you get a sandwich on a Parisian train and it's like ham and cheese with butter. And you're like, this is better than like a gourmet sandwich. And they're fucking train station is better.

• 26:32Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 26:33Sam Morril?

You put butter on anything, it's fucking, butter and bread is just like.

• 26:37Mark Normand?

Yeah, and they do real butter there. You picture that guy in Glorious Bastards, you know, that little dairy he had up there on the mountain? Woo, the Irish butter is incredible, too.

• 26:46Sam Morril?

Good. Butter's fucking good, man. Why French food is so good, the butter.

• 26:50Mark Normand?

  It's all butter, baby.

• 26:51Sam Morril?

A ton of food. Yeah, it was, I mean, it was insane, dude. It was, uh, so much, and it's the best when you could just get on a train, too.

• 26:59Mark Normand?

  I know. I love a train.

• 27:00Sam Morril?

I had a few trains in a row. Like, this is fucking nice.

• 27:03Mark Normand?

It's very nice. You get the view. There's no security. You don't have to get there an hour early. Train's the best.

• 27:09Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 27:10Mark Normand?

It's crazy, like, if you live in London, you can just train to Paris for a weekend. You know?

• 27:16Sam Morril?

  Crazy?

• 27:16Mark Normand?

  It's crazy.

• 27:17Sam Morril?

  Or Amsterdam, whatever.

• 27:18Mark Normand?

Wherever. But also, I don't think London has, like in America, we can go to Malibu. We can just go to Malibu or Hawaii. We have our cool shit in the country. I think they have to leave to have cool shit.

• 27:28Sam Morril?

  Yeah, but they're closer.

• 27:30Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 27:31Sam Morril?

I mean, they're close. You could train versus, you're not taking a train to Malibu from here.

• 27:35Mark Normand?

  No, that's true, but.

• 27:37Sam Morril?

I've never even been to Hawaii. I would love to.

• 27:38Mark Normand?

  What?

• 27:39Sam Morril?

  I should go, man.

• 27:40Mark Normand?

  Oh, you turned down Hawaii?

• 27:41Sam Morril?

It was routed with Australia and it was a year I'd done so many fucking cities. I was like, I don't wanna chill. I was also single. I was like, I don't wanna chill and fucking. I don't wanna chill in Hawaii for five nights alone.

• 27:53Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 27:54Sam Morril?

  There's something sad about that.

• 27:55Mark Normand?

Definitely. And that's a long flight, Hawaii.

• 27:58Sam Morril?

You'd think you're gonna have some spiritual awakening on some mountain, but really you're just jerking off in a room and just like, "Ah, fucking, I'm lonely, I'm gonna kill myself."

• 28:05Mark Normand?

You still have your brain in Hawaii, you know?

• 28:08Sam Morril?

  It's still you.

• 28:09Mark Normand?

  It's still your sadness.

• 28:10Sam Morril?

They did a sketch like that on SNL, Sandler, did you see that?

• 28:12Mark Normand?

  No.

• 28:13Sam Morril?

He does a travel infomercial and he's like, "I just want you to know, you're still gonna be you over here." That's the whole thing, it's a great sketch.

• 28:19Mark Normand?

  That's hilarious.

• 28:21Sam Morril?

I got some other fucking things I wrote down. What else?

• 28:25Mark Normand?

Everybody's quiet everywhere, too, have you noticed that? You go any city in Europe, it's like, everywhere, the restaurants are quiet, even the bars are kinda quiet.

• 28:33Sam Morril?

Not Germany, they're chatterboxes. I got a lot of people just started chatting me up in bars in a way where I was like, "These people are fucking nuts."

• 28:39Mark Normand?

  Oh, interesting.

• 28:40Sam Morril?

There was a woman just chatting us up and I was like, "She is fucking wasted, this chick." My friend was like, "You think she's wasted?" I'm like, "Yes, she's screaming at us."

• 28:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 28:48Sam Morril?

But, uh, I'll tell you, here's a P for traveling: the slow hotel check-in.

• 28:54Mark Normand?

  Been saying it for years.

• 28:55Sam Morril?

You know if someone's checking into a hotel, they've been traveling?

• 28:57Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 28:58Sam Morril?

  Why are you torturing us?

• 28:59Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 29:00Sam Morril?

Would you like us to explain the benefits here? I just wanna fucking sleep, I wanna take my pants off.

• 29:04Mark Normand?

  Give me the key!

• 29:05Sam Morril?

I'm taking my pants off here if you don't pick it up.

• 29:07Mark Normand?

Yeah, this shit. Okay, so, you're like, "Why is this ready? Get it going."

• 29:12Sam Morril?

Get it going, just have the key ready.

• 29:14Mark Normand?

Yeah, I would say the same for a rental car place. Just, I show up, I already, I made the reservation, just give me the key.

• 29:19Sam Morril?

Oh, you know what I watched on the plane ride back, which was like, uh, god, how about those fucking, uh, the movie selection on the flight to Saudi Arabia, those were fucking rough.

• 29:27Mark Normand?

  Oh, dude.

• 29:28Sam Morril?

It's like one anti-Semitic documentary and, uh, Mission Impossible 5, I'm like, "This is it." And then, and then you got, uh, flying back though, uh, damn, planes, trains and automobiles, like,

• 29:38Mark Normand?

  Oh, so good.

• 29:39Sam Morril?

This time of year, I can't not watch that movie. It's the ultimate Thanksgiving movie.

• 29:43Mark Normand?

  Incredible movie, yeah.

• 29:44Sam Morril?

  And you tear up.

• 29:45Mark Normand?

I just watched the John Candy doc.

• 29:47Sam Morril?

  I gotta watch it.

• 29:47Mark Normand?

It's all over the doc. Oh, another thing about the Saudi Arabia flight, they pray. So I'm getting, eh, look, I'm an American, if you pray on a flight, we're fucked. But they pray normally, they're like, "Hello, ba-da-ba-da-da," I'm like, "What the hell's going on?" But that's just normal, they have to pray every 10 minutes. So yeah, that was scary. But yeah.

• 30:07Sam Morril?

  Such a good movie.

• 30:08Mark Normand?

Uh oh, we might have our guest here. Uh, yeah, Plane Strains, so good. The doc, the doc game is unbelievable.

• 30:14Sam Morril?

  Is it a great movie?

• 30:15Mark Normand?

  It's good. It's not great. I'd say it's good.

• 30:17Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 30:18Mark Normand?

But it's like, we got the Scorsese five parter.

• 30:20Sam Morril?

I haven't seen that yet. Is it great?

• 30:21Mark Normand?

Already finished it. Incredible. Wish it was ten hours.

• 30:24Sam Morril?

  Damn, I gotta watch it.

• 30:25Mark Normand?

Charlie Sheen doc was fun. The Billy Joel doc was fun.

• 30:28Sam Morril?

I got a peeve. Why hasn't Sheen been on here yet?

• 30:30Mark Normand?

I know, he just did Corolla.

• 30:32Sam Morril?

  He's been on everything.

• 30:33Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 30:34Sam Morril?

We've been gunning for him since before he did this shit.

• 30:36Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 30:36Sam Morril?

Simon Rex, we know you listen to the pod. Just fucking text him for us, will you?

• 30:40Mark Normand?

  Text him. We're fun.

• 30:42Sam Morril?

  We're fun. He'd like us.

• 30:43Mark Normand?

Yeah, we'll do crack or whatever he wants. We'll give him.

• 30:46Sam Morril?

No, he's trying not to do crack.

• 30:47Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 30:48Sam Morril?

Well, drink your non-alcoholic beer, Charlie.

• 30:50Mark Normand?

  Does he have a non-alcoholic?

• 30:51Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 30:51Mark Normand?

  Oof.

• 30:52Sam Morril?

Well, I'll drink it to get him on.

• 30:53Mark Normand?

I mean, I'll drink it, but.

• 30:54Sam Morril?

  Non-alcoholic beer's a bummer, though.

• 30:55Mark Normand?

  That is a big bummer.

• 30:57Sam Morril?

  It's a bummer.

• 30:58Mark Normand?

Especially from the guy who's winning, Tiger Blue.

• 30:59Sam Morril?

  Oh, I know.

• 31:00Mark Normand?

  What a, what a shift.

• 31:01Sam Morril?

Yeah, you're just, let's get bloated, is that it? It's like, it's like fucking, uh, you know, Dan St. Germain, our buddy, we'll be out with him and he'll, he'll order like a Heineken Zero and I'm like, ugh.

• 31:11Mark Normand?

  I know, I know.

• 31:12Sam Morril?

  Just don't drink.

• 31:12Mark Normand?

  Just don't drink.

• 31:14Sam Morril?

Just get a Diet Coke or something.

• 31:15Mark Normand?

Please. Oh, by the way, I posted my tour dates today. The amount of queefs hitting me up to open. I'll take Buffalo. I'll take this. It's crazy. These guys are like sharks in the water.

• 31:25Sam Morril?

Gee, by the way, don't you have people you bring already?

• 31:28Mark Normand?

I do, but everybody's like, oh, you, you got anybody for Des Moines? I'm like, alright, you can do Des Moines.

• 31:33Sam Morril?

You can, you can, by the way, if we end up shooting the movie, you can move these days, right?

• 31:37Mark Normand?

Yeah, of course. These are all club dates.

• 31:39Sam Morril?

Oh, good. Yeah, I gotta get back into clubs, too. I wanna, I wanna build up for the, for when I tape, but uh.

• 31:43Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 31:44Sam Morril?

I feel like it's getting there. It's funny, you feel like you're, like after Liverpool, I'm like, I could fucking tape here. And then you have a show in Amsterdam and you're like, I need a few months.

• 31:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah, right, right.

• 31:54Sam Morril?

You, you always judge it by the bad set, not the good. That's how you have to.

• 31:57Mark Normand?

  That's so true.

• 31:58Sam Morril?

Man, they were so bad at The Cellar last night, like so.

• 32:00Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 32:01Sam Morril?

  So comically bad.

• 32:02Mark Normand?

  Interesting.

• 32:02Sam Morril?

It's funny, Louis and Judd were actually on the show and it's funny getting, seeing Louis get brought up to, he gets no applause.

• 32:09Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 32:10Sam Morril?

They were so shitty. At one point I was like, man, this crowd fucking sucks. And some late, I just said it. I was like, man, you guys. are terrible and this woman just goes it's your material.

• 32:19Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 32:20Sam Morril?

And I was like, wow, alright.

• 32:21Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 32:22Sam Morril?

And I was in my head, I was like, these are getting applause breaks in fucking Europe, these are working.

• 32:25Mark Normand?

  Yeah, what a coo.

• 32:26Sam Morril?

I mean, yeah, I was just like, whatever.

• 32:28Mark Normand?

Damn, you know what's weird, I had a horrible set at New York Comedy Club on 24th Street last night. I'm bombing.

• 32:34Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 32:34Mark Normand?

Hey, and then I go, come on in whenever you're ready.

• 32:37Sam Morril?

  Come in.

• 32:39Mark Normand?

Alright, he's gotta pee. Oh, the audience is titillating, they're like, who could it be?

• 32:43Sam Morril?

  Don't know.

• 32:43Mark Normand?

Okay, but, that's true, that's true, it's probably on the thumbnail, but, I had a horrible on, five minutes in, six minutes in, I'm like, struggling, and I go, what's going on? Did something happen? You guys suck, fuck you, you're gay, you're fat, you're ugly, and then I'm killing.

• 32:58Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 32:58Mark Normand?

Then I, once I did that, they respected me or something.

• 33:01Sam Morril?

I had a couple, I had a couple hit, but I still didn't get what I wanted, and I saw Louis af, I saw Louis laughing at me bombing, which is funny to see, a comic you respect just watch you eat it.

• 33:10Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 33:11Sam Morril?

And I handled it like such a little bitch, and when I got off, he goes, he goes, you couldn't get back after that, I said, I really couldn't, I was too annoyed that she said that.

• 33:19Mark Normand?

Right, right, of course, that's mean.

• 33:21Sam Morril?

Um, but they were, they were bad, I mean, it's funny, Matt Koff got offstage, and I go, how were they? He goes, awful.

• 33:27Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 33:28Sam Morril?

So in my head, I was like, okay.

• 33:29Mark Normand?

  He's a good writer.

• 33:30Sam Morril?

Lou, yeah, Matt's got good stuff, and Louis onstage was like, you know Sam really hated you.

• 33:35Mark Normand?

Yeah, he's done that to me before.

• 33:37Sam Morril?

  Yeah, but, uh, yeah, whatever.

• 33:40Mark Normand?

I saw Louis, I, this is years ago, I was like, they're tough, and he goes up, and he goes, I heard you guys are a nightmare, and that got a laugh, and then he started killing.

• 33:46Sam Morril?

Yeah, I've done that before, I mean, I've heard, I've heard not to try, from the, I'll say something like, I've heard, like, I heard you guys aren't worth giving in any effort for.

• 33:53Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 33:53Sam Morril?

Like, you just trash them out of the gate, and that, yeah, you like, it's like a hot chick, you just neg them.

• 33:57Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 33:57Sam Morril?

And they're like, I'm like, like, I think you're hot, but.

• 34:00Mark Normand?

  Right, right, right.

• 34:01Sam Morril?

The other guys were saying you're weird looking, and they're like, who is this guy?

• 34:04Mark Normand?

Yeah, yeah, they, I think they build some, they build, you build like a, oh, he doesn't need us to laugh.

• 34:10Sam Morril?

  Totally.

• 34:10Mark Normand?

  So now they're laughing.

• 34:11Sam Morril?

  Totally.

• 34:12Mark Normand?

  Yeah, come on in.

• 34:13Sam Morril?

Come in, man. Let's do it.

• 34:15Mark Normand?

  Uh-oh, you under the weather?

• 34:16Speaker 02

  No.

• 34:17Mark Normand?

  Oh, your fly's down.

• 34:18Speaker 02

I'm just running and sweating and dripping and.

• 34:22Sam Morril?

  Dude, the book's awesome.

• 34:24Speaker 02

  Oh, thanks, guys.

• 34:25Mark Normand?

Yeah, I love the book. The look is great, too.

• 34:27Speaker 02

  Right? It's fancy.

• 34:28Sam Morril?

Yeah, I like the feeling, the pages.

• 34:30Speaker 02

Right? It's got a texture. It's very heavy.

• 34:32Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 34:34Speaker 02

Some thick books are light and other books are so heavy that you don't even know if you want to read them.

• 34:39Mark Normand?

And I'm just jealous of anyone who took photos. I have six photos of me as a child.

• 34:42Sam Morril?

We were talking about this last night, like, the amount of photos you have pre-iPhone.

• 34:47Mark Normand?

  Yes!

• 34:48Speaker 02

But that's really scraping. Like, when I lived with Sandler, I think there's like eight photos of that era.

• 34:55Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 34:55Speaker 02

That exists. So it seems like we covered it, but it's literally like one, like, instant camera, you know, like a throwaway one. And then one comedian took pictures one night at the improv.

• 35:07Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 35:07Speaker 02

So we had that group shot with Spade and Covert and Sandler.

• 35:10Sam Morril?

  That's a great one.

• 35:10Speaker 02

But no, I mean, in high school, I have like no photos of anything. I have old eras. I have old girlfriends. There's not a photo of...

• 35:16Mark Normand?

Same. Same. Nobody believes you. You're like, no, I swear I have a girlfriend. She lives in Canada. By the way, what'd you hit the gap? You got a real earthy tone here.

• 35:24Speaker 02

You know, I went really tan. I went really kind of banana republic.

• 35:27Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 35:28Speaker 02

You know, I was just doing the Today Show and, you know, you gotta play to the demographic. You gotta play to your audience and know that this feels friendly. It's called marketing, guys.

• 35:37Sam Morril?

Dude, you, uh, I love the, yeah, the parts with Sandler. It's great. And then I have a question, because there's a story of you, Sandler, Tarantino, and all these guys seen in Dangerfield.

• 35:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:48Sam Morril?

  In Vegas.

• 35:49Speaker 02

  That's right, yeah, yeah.

• 35:50Sam Morril?

And you have one line where you say Dangerfield had like the darkest insults.

• 35:54Speaker 02

  I know.

• 35:55Sam Morril?

  What was the line?

• 35:56Speaker 02

Well, basically, they were doing, you know, they had done Little Nicky.

• 36:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 36:01Speaker 02

And Dangerfield was in it, and Tarantino was in it, and like Harvey Keitel. It was a crazy cast. And then one day Sandler's like, let's go to Vegas and just pay respects to Rodney and go see his act.

• 36:14Mark Normand?

  Hell, yeah.

• 36:14Speaker 02

So it was like a crazy crew of like me and Adam and Rob Schneider, Tarantino, Carl Weathers.

• 36:23Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 36:24Speaker 02

  Uh, you know.

• 36:25Sam Morril?

Rob, like, I'll tell you why I don't give you respect. You're vaccinated. That's why.

• 36:29Speaker 02

And so we go see the show and he's kind of great. He's in his eighties, murders. Someone heckled him and he kind of went off and it was like really fun to see him like at full strength. And then we went after to his hotel room to hang out with him, you know, and it's a classic Rodney in the white robe.

• 36:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah, smoking weed.

• 36:45Speaker 02

Moment, smoking a lot of weed. Everyone's smoking weed and you know, I'm trying to talk to him and he's so, he's so odd. He's just like a really good odd guy. Like we all worshipped him, but he's pitching us movies he wants to make. "I want to do a movie with uh, I got 11 wives. I'm Mormon. I got 11 wives." You know, uh, I think he made that movie.

• 37:03Mark Normand?

Yeah, five wives. They talked about, "All right, fine. I'll do five."

• 37:07Speaker 02

We can't afford the other six. And then I said, you know, my grandmother was best friends with Tony Fields, the comedian, and uh, she was like a Joan Rivers type of self-deprecating comedian who was really, really genuinely hilarious. And I said, "What did you think of her?" And he goes, "She was what she was."

• 37:27Speaker 02

And I was like, "What does that mean?" He goes, "She was what she was."

• 37:31Mark Normand?

  Oh my god.

• 37:32Speaker 02

And it was the meanest thing I think I've ever heard anybody say.

• 37:38Sam Morril?

I have a question about that story because, because Adam told me this once, that when he went to uh, I'm assuming this was the same trip because he said it was him and Tarantino talking to Dangerfield and Dangerfield was like, "Oh, I'm a fucking hack. I'm the worst." You know, and Adam's like, "No, you're the best."

• 37:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 37:52Sam Morril?

"You don't think you're the best?" He's like, "No, I'm a fucking square." And, and Adam told Tarantino, he's like, "He thinks he's a square." And he said Tarantino was high out of his mind and he was like, he's like, "Yeah, you're a fucking square." And Rodney's like, "What?" And he goes, "What?" And, and he just went away like pissed and he, and Adam's like, "What the fuck are you doing?" He's like, "No, he's the best." He's like, "He's a square." Like he didn't realize what he was saying, but it offended Rodney.

• 38:13Speaker 02

  Sure Rodney, easily offended.

• 38:14Sam Morril?

  He wasn't?

• 38:15Speaker 02

He always thought he wasn't getting respect. And, and maybe the guy who got the most respect of everybody.

• 38:20Mark Normand?

  I know, right?

• 38:21Speaker 02

That's the weird thing. Uh, that, that was his hook.

• 38:23Sam Morril?

Remember the documentary and they, and they're doing like describe Rodney in one word at the end and Bill Murray goes respectable. I was like, "Oh, that's fucking perfect."

• 38:31Speaker 02

I mean, people loved him so much. He was just kind of.

• 38:35Mark Normand?

  He's the king.

• 38:35Speaker 02

But I went to see him, I don't know, maybe early eight. At the height of Caddyshack era at the Westbury Music Fair.

• 38:44Mark Normand?

  Oh, I've been there.

• 38:45Speaker 02

And he murdered as hard as you can murder, talking so fast.

• 38:50Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 38:50Speaker 02

I mean, I don't know what drugs he was on, you know, like, was he on coke or? But he literally had such a mastery of the one liners and he was just ripping them. And then he would get a laugh and then you would miss the next two jokes.

• 39:02Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 39:02Speaker 02

Because he was talking so fast.

• 39:04Sam Morril?

That might be why I rewatched Back to School so many times. Because there's so many one liners.

• 39:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 39:10Sam Morril?

  You just go back.

• 39:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:11Mark Normand?

You know what's cool about Rodney? If you listen to his album, he doesn't say, I don't get no respect to like 28 minutes in. He saves it, which you'd think, hey, it's a catchphrase, he uses it every 10 seconds, but he, he saves it and it gets like a huge applause. Which I think is, um, that's a pro move.

• 39:27Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 39:28Speaker 02

Well, before that, you know, he used to talk slower. Like, if you look at, if you've ever heard the earliest Rodney record.

• 39:34Sam Morril?

It's like, it's like listening to Simpson, season one.

• 39:36Speaker 02

Exactly. What the fuck's up with Homer's voice?

• 39:39Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 39:39Sam Morril?

  It's weird.

• 39:40Speaker 02

And he, he would talk like this, and you know who I was? How did my wife do the day? It was a completely different thing, but kind of hilarious and also would record comedy albums at his club. And it's amazing because he wouldn't even do great on his comedy album.

• 39:54Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 39:55Speaker 02

Like, it would feel like a late night set at a club.

• 39:57Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 39:58Speaker 02

Where there's like half a house.

• 40:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 40:00Speaker 02

And that would be the comedy album, no sweetening, just this is what it's exactly like.

• 40:04Mark Normand?

Yeah, you could hear the clinking of the glasses and all that stuff, yeah. Uh, I've just realized Dave Attell is now R. Rodney.

• 40:13Sam Morril?

Well, he's like, kinda, he's like, almost like with hipper references, I feel like.

• 40:16Mark Normand?

  Yeah, sure.

• 40:16Sam Morril?

Attell, he'll like know who the kids are talking about.

• 40:19Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 40:20Sam Morril?

But yeah, he's kinda got a Rodney type thing.

• 40:22Mark Normand?

Well, also just the, you're the best, he's like, I'm a hack, I suck. You go, no, you're great, everybody loves you. And he's like, I can't stand myself, my act is weak, whatever.

• 40:31Speaker 02

But what do you think Dave thinks when his head hits the pillow?

• 40:34Mark Normand?

I think he's thinking, what's the new Bitcoin? Gaza, whatever.

• 40:38Sam Morril?

When his head hits the pillow, he's had like sixteen coffees right before.

• 40:42Mark Normand?

  That's true, yeah.

• 40:43Sam Morril?

So I don't think he's sleeping that much.

• 40:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah, and it's like 8 a.m. probably.

• 40:47Sam Morril?

Well, I remember leaving diners with a towel at like 4 a.m. and he'd order a large iced coffee to go.

• 40:51Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 40:51Sam Morril?

And I'd be like, what are you doing?

• 40:53Mark Normand?

Yeah, he's like, I got a new porn store to check out tomorrow.

• 40:58Sam Morril?

Well, dude, when I opened your book, one of the coolest pages is like, cause, and this is like, maybe just cause you're a nice guy. I forget how much shit you've done, cause you're not talking about it, but like, it's like Larry Sanders on one page and the other page is The Critic.

• 41:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:14Sam Morril?

So these are your two, the two sides of your comedy.

• 41:17Speaker 02

Yeah, well, I worked there both at the same time.

• 41:19Sam Morril?

That's cra- two days in two days, right?

• 41:20Speaker 02

Yeah, since Ben's social got canceled and I had tried to get a job on The Simpsons after the first season, I wrote a spec. I had no career whatsoever and I didn't get hired, but they liked it. And so then when the show got canceled, two of the people, you know, Al Jean and Mike Reese were starting a new show called The Critic. And they asked me to write for it a couple of days a week and then Gary knew I was unemployed and he's like, come, come work for me. He's like, you'll learn a lot.

• 41:49Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 41:50Speaker 02

And, and he didn't say like, you'll be helpful to me.

• 41:52Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 41:53Speaker 02

He said, you'll learn a lot and, and I would go in there two days a week, just pitch jokes.

• 41:57Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 41:57Speaker 02

And then go to The Critic and, and pitch jokes, but I was the only non-Ivy League person in The Critic room. And they were all like the legendary.

• 42:06Mark Normand?

  The Harvard.

• 42:06Speaker 02

Writers of the time and the Harvard guys and I would make some dumb dirty joke and they would just look at me and go, oh Judd, you've outwitted us again.

• 42:16Mark Normand?

  You elitist guns, damn.

• 42:18Speaker 02

And they would be like, trying to figure out like Fermat's theorem in between jokes, like they were all like math geniuses.

• 42:24Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 42:25Speaker 02

And like to talk about math.

• 42:27Mark Normand?

  Ugh.

• 42:27Sam Morril?

Well, dude, you, it's like the two most different shows tonally. I love both of the shows. If you, and I'm sure a lot of people listening haven't seen The Critic. I think they're all on YouTube.

• 42:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:37Sam Morril?

You should watch it. It's, it's.

• 42:38Mark Normand?

  Incredible.

• 42:38Sam Morril?

Like, I feel like it's almost like the predecessor to Family Guy and a lot of, ooh. It's like a lot of funny flashbacks. It's so funny.

• 42:45Mark Normand?

It's a little dated, cause it's so many movie references and.

• 42:47Sam Morril?

And a lot of fat jokes.

• 42:48Mark Normand?

  And all that, yeah.

• 42:50Sam Morril?

The 90s was like all fat jokes.

• 42:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:52Sam Morril?

It was just a guy would like stand on a, on a trampoline and it would break and be like, I guess that's the joke.

• 42:57Speaker 02

It was, it was open season at that time.

• 42:58Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:59Speaker 02

I always remember there was like a parody of some sort of movie where Arnold Schwarzenegger is an actor.

• 43:04Mark Normand?

  The Rabbi.

• 43:05Speaker 02

And he like breaks into the Supreme Court and he's like, "Tonight, we're going to make some laws."

• 43:11Mark Normand?

Yeah, I loved that show as a kid.

• 43:13Sam Morril?

The Critic Pilot is one of the best pilots ever.

• 43:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:16Sam Morril?

It's perfect. I love that show.

• 43:18Mark Normand?

The mom was amazing, the Easter Island kid, everything was great. The drunk, drunk dad.

• 43:25Speaker 02

The funny thing that happened is so I wrote this, this spec, like, you know, because that's what you used to do. You would write an episode of a show to prove to another show that you were a good writer. You would never get a job with the show. Like, if you wrote like a Murphy Brown or something, you would never get hired by Murphy Brown. But maybe someone at Seinfeld would like it.

• 43:40Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 43:41Speaker 02

And so they didn't make my Simpsons episode. And then, literally 22 years later, I'm doing a Q and A somewhere. And I, I go, you know, all my stuff, it's all about like people who don't want to grow up. And, you know, in fact, the first thing I ever wrote was a Simpsons episode where Homer takes his family to see some sort of hypnotist. He makes them think he's 10, and then the hypnotist has a heart attack, and now Homer is 10. And he becomes best friends with Bart.

• 44:07Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 44:08Speaker 02

And he doesn't want to be brought back to 40.

• 44:10Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 44:10Speaker 02

And they, and they run away so that he won't be brought back to his real age. And there was an article about it and they like printed the Q and A. And then the guys at the Simpsons, who ran the critic and had been there since day one, called me and said, "Oh, we'll make it now."

• 44:28Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 44:29Speaker 02

And then, you know, they rewrote, you know, basically every word of it.

• 44:32Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 44:32Speaker 02

Uh, and made it like the dream of what it, you know, what I always would have hoped it could be.

• 44:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 44:37Speaker 02

And they made this hilarious episode. They let me go to the table read and the records. So I got to like sit in the room while like Dan Castellaneta was doing Homer, which was like watching Jackie Gleason do, you know, Ralph Kramp.

• 44:49Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 44:49Speaker 02

I really like thought like, "Oh, this is one of the greatest things that's ever happened in comedy on earth."

• 44:54Mark Normand?

Could they throw you a bone and let you do a voice? Like, let you be Judd?

• 44:57Speaker 02

Ah, well, I was in another episode.

• 44:58Mark Normand?

  Okay, there we go.

• 44:59Speaker 02

There was an episode about a DVD piracy that I had, I had a line or two in.

• 45:04Mark Normand?

  That's pretty legendary.

• 45:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 45:06Mark Normand?

All your kids, like, "Hey, look, here's me on The Simpsons. I'm yellow."

• 45:08Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's a big one.

• 45:09Sam Morril?

Dude, in the book, you talk about Cable Guy, which I feel like, uh, so you didn't get credit writing for that, right?

• 45:16Speaker 02

  Yeah, I did it like.

• 45:17Sam Morril?

  But you wrote it.

• 45:18Speaker 02

A big, well, there was a script and, you know, we wrote. A lot of it.

• 45:24Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 45:24Speaker 02

Enough that I thought I would get credit.

• 45:26Sam Morril?

  Sure.

• 45:26Speaker 02

Of some sort. But the guy who wrote it was a lawyer and you have to write like a, literally a legal paper to try to explain why you think you deserve credit. And I was just so young and dumb that my letter was bad.

• 45:37Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 45:37Speaker 02

So I wound up getting zero credit. And then the movie didn't do well in the box office. And I was so upset and complaining publicly. And people were like, I can't believe he's trying to get his name on the cable.

• 45:48Speaker 02

But, uh, so that hurt, but I, I produced it as well and it was really.

• 45:52Sam Morril?

But then, but then you had lunch with Warren Beatty?

• 45:55Speaker 02

I did. So like it bombed. So, yeah, it bombed. Here's the funny thing. It made a hundred million dollars. But they expected it to just make whatever.

• 46:04Sam Morril?

  Was it rated R?

• 46:05Speaker 02

  Uh, it was rated R.

• 46:06Sam Morril?

  That'll do.

• 46:07Speaker 02

I mean, it ends with Jim committing suicide. You know, like it was a little darker than people expected.

• 46:11Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 46:12Speaker 02

And, uh, so I was really bummed and Shanley's like, you should talk to Warren about it.

• 46:17Sam Morril?

  Warren?

• 46:17Speaker 02

Warren Beatty. And they, cause they were friends at the time.

• 46:19Sam Morril?

  Okay.

• 46:20Speaker 02

And I said, okay, so he set up for me to go out to lunch with him. And, uh, he said, you know, you never know if something is good for like 10 years. He's like, movies, you know, sometimes they open, sometimes they don't, sometimes they get good reviews, sometimes they don't. But in like 10 years, you know, if anyone cares. If it, if it survived in the culture.

• 46:42Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 46:42Speaker 02

And that really has turned out to be true because we've had tons of movies that were below expectations in reception. And then you go, oh, 15, 17 years later, people are still talking about Walk Hard.

• 46:52Sam Morril?

  Right. Or Idiocracy.

• 46:54Speaker 02

  Idiocracy is a perfect example.

• 46:55Sam Morril?

I saw Walk Hard with, it's the only time I saw a movie with my biological father, who I was not close with.

• 47:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:01Sam Morril?

And he was like, he's like trying to have a relationship with me. He's like, we should see a movie. And I'm like, what's something I can see that will have no weird parental theme in it? I was like, Walk Hard. Then it's like the whole thing about him and his dad. I'm like, what the fuck? And it's literally the whole thing. He's like, you never played Cash with me. I'm like, what the fuck am I watching? Next to him, like this is the most uncomfortable, uh, yeah.

• 47:19Speaker 02

Yeah. And then it brought you back together.

• 47:23Sam Morril?

I don't think we talked after that. I think it was like, let's not deal with any of this.

• 47:26Mark Normand?

I saw Twelve Years a Slave with my black friend.

• 47:30Speaker 02

  Similar.

• 47:31Mark Normand?

  Damn, that sucks.

• 47:32Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 47:33Speaker 02

It was like when I saw National Lampoon's Animal House with my mom.

• 47:36Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 47:37Speaker 02

And I'm like 10 years old and there's like hand jobs in it.

• 47:40Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:41Speaker 02

It was uncomfortable with Tammy that day.

• 47:44Mark Normand?

You mind if we dance with the old dates?

• 47:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:46Mark Normand?

That movie's got some shit where you're like, whoa.

• 47:48Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. I, you know, I'm putting together a comedy exhibit for the Motion Picture Academy Museum. And it's, it'll be in like two years. So they're letting me like pick all the objects. It's like to put in the museum and I was looking through things to consider and I, I was shown the script of Animal House. And, and there, I, you open the page and it says, do you mind if we dance to your dates?

• 48:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 48:09Speaker 02

And then there was the notes from John Lanis, the director of like what music and how he wanted to shoot it.

• 48:14Mark Normand?

What are you studying? Primitive species. Wild joke. But yeah, great movie though.

• 48:20Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 48:21Mark Normand?

Great time. They got together, I was obsessed with Animal House as a kid and they got together and just traded frat stories and just wrote them all down.

• 48:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:28Mark Normand?

That's how they got that movie done.

• 48:29Sam Morril?

Yeah, some of those movies, it is funny, like I loved Revenge of the Nerds growing up and a few of these are definitely rape scenes. It's kind of crazy.

• 48:35Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 48:36Speaker 02

I think that was a thing, right? Like in Animal House, like the girl is passed out and then the joke is deciding whether or not to attack her.

• 48:44Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 48:45Sam Morril?

A little like an SVU plotline now. You're like, oh, that was, that was funny back then though.

• 48:49Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 48:49Speaker 02

I know. You wondered just like what was happening like in the culture that like, I mean, you know, hundreds of people approved that.

• 48:55Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 48:55Speaker 02

It wasn't like one entire studios and marketing departments and, you know.

• 48:59Sam Morril?

But that's how you watch. You watch it through a time capsule and you're like, oh, this is like kind of, it's interesting, you know, it's not like good or bad. It just is, you know?

• 49:06Mark Normand?

It just was, yeah. I mean, it's like honeymooners. To the moon. The whole joke is I'm gonna hit my wife until she goes to the moon. And we all loved it.

• 49:13Speaker 02

But you'd have to be hit hard to get to the moon.

• 49:15Mark Normand?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 49:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:17Mark Normand?

And we not got to the moon by then?

• 49:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:19Mark Normand?

  That was pre-moon landing, right?

• 49:20Sam Morril?

  Damn.

• 49:21Speaker 02

Uh, yeah, that probably was. That was pre-moon. So it might have inspired.

• 49:27Sam Morril?

Russia heard it. They're like, we gotta get there first.

• 49:30Mark Normand?

We gotta hit our wives harder. Now, I gotta ask, so when you're in the thick of it, I'm talking Ben Stiller's show, then The Critic, then fucking Larry Sanders, which is such an iconic comedy.

• 49:40Sam Morril?

  So iconic.

• 49:40Mark Normand?

Did you know, like, I'm a little, I'm a young kid from Long Island, who's now in LA, I'm writing on 17 shows, I'm in the throes, did you go, I'm, I'm doing it? Or was it a constant fight for survival?

• 49:52Speaker 02

Well, both. I mean, I was lucky, because Larry Sanders, my job was just to pitch jokes. I didn't have to, I didn't have to approve the jokes. And really, the more stressful job is, which joke to put in the script. It's fun to just sit there eating a sandwich, just babbling all day. What about this? What about that?

• 50:07Sam Morril?

We've turned it into a career.

• 50:08Speaker 02

Yeah, exactly. And that's all it really was, was just trying to get a joke in. You'd get maybe one script a year. To write. And then slowly, I rose up, where the very last season, I co-ran the show with Adam Resnick, and that's stressful.

• 50:23Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 50:23Speaker 02

Because now you could let Gary down.

• 50:25Sam Morril?

How did he, how did he pitch that to you, that he wanted you to run the show?

• 50:29Speaker 02

Uh, you know, there's just like a moment where he was unhappy with how it was set up, and then he just said, will you please come in and help me? And I had seen him go through a lot of writers. And some of the best writers in the world that he just didn't connect with.

• 50:41Sam Morril?

  Scary.

• 50:42Speaker 02

And I had seen that go dark a bunch of times.

• 50:45Sam Morril?

Well, the last season's dark. I mean, the last season is like, it's beautiful. It's kinda sad.

• 50:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:50Sam Morril?

The idea that you, you don't realize how much they love each other till the last season, the characters. When Hank is such a weasel the whole show, but the last season, he's kinda like, no, fuck Jon Stewart taking over, like, I got your back. That was kinda where you're like, oh, whoa, this show kinda like, it's got heart, you know?

• 51:04Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah, it was real.

• 51:05Speaker 02

I mean, that's what he wanted, you know, to be about, was like, he would always say, it's about, people who love each other, but show business gets in the way.

• 51:13Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 51:13Mark Normand?

  Ooh.

• 51:14Speaker 02

And so like, your ego gets in the way. He also said that no one ever tells the truth to each other. And if they ever look someone in the eye and tell the truth, it's a huge deal.

• 51:21Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 51:22Speaker 02

Uh, and, you know, so that was the conversation in the office. Like, people just have a mask and they're, they wanna be seen a certain way.

• 51:28Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 51:28Speaker 02

And that was, uh, what the whole metaphor of the show was, like, being behind the curtain. And how we all have our own, you know, private world in our head, and this way, we want people to see us. Like, Hank Kingsley wants you to think he's like- The shit.

• 51:42Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 51:42Speaker 02

But to everyone, he's like, he's so clearly not the shit.

• 51:45Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 51:45Speaker 02

Uh, and also he wants to know if Larry loves him.

• 51:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 51:48Speaker 02

There's one episode where it's all about him just wanting a raise and saying, I'm gonna quit if I don't get a raise. But he just kinda wants to see if Larry would back him.

• 51:57Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 51:57Speaker 02

You know, so that's the thing that Gary was, uh, was most.

• 52:00Mark Normand?

  It's all relationships.

• 52:02Speaker 02

Yeah, it's all about, you know, how people connect and, you know, and, and if you think about any job you've ever had, like, it's all the same, the same stuff for any office. I mean, that's why I think it's an inspirational show to a lot of other shows. Cause it is, it just went very deep into those relationships. But so when Gary asked me to run it, I was so nervous. So I just said to him, I go, I know what usually happens to the person in this job.

• 52:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 52:27Speaker 02

And I go, I really don't wanna lose.

• 52:28Mark Normand?

  It's like working for Trump.

• 52:29Speaker 02

It is, it is. It's like, yeah, like you're, um, scaramouche or something, you know? And, uh, and so I said, how can we do this where at the end of this, you don't hate me?

• 52:40Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 52:41Speaker 02

And we talked about it and I don't think anyone had ever done that with him. You know, to just really sit him down and go, well, you know, what is the process that makes this easier for you? And I think the reason why it worked was I think he just liked writing with me. Not that I was doing anything so great, but I think he felt comfortable being funny with me.

• 53:00Mark Normand?

  That's huge.

• 53:01Speaker 02

And so he would loosen up and I could kinda get him going and take notes and, you know, manipulate him into figuring out all the problems where other people would try to fix everything for him. Which you, you do have to do, but I was like, how do I get Gary to tell us? Because it's all in his head.

• 53:17Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 53:17Speaker 02

And if I can make that fun, maybe he'll give us more of the show and it won't land on us as much.

• 53:23Mark Normand?

  Sure. Wow. There he is.

• 53:25Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 53:26Speaker 02

  There he is, yeah.

• 53:26Mark Normand?

Yeah, yeah. I, I always think that show is like the opposite of Seinfeld. They were on at the same time, but Seinfeld was like, no relationships. Selfish, show about nothing. And that show was like, just emotion, love, fighting, jealousy. And all showbiz, where Seinfeld had very little showbiz. Very different show.

• 53:45Sam Morril?

There's also like some of the callbacks in that. I mean, one of my favorite episodes is, uh, Hank's Night in the Sun where he. He take Larry Sick and Hank takes over and the first night he takes over the show, he kills because he's like charming and then it all goes to his head and he becomes a piece of shit. It's just a great, I mean, it's a great episode if you like, you're like, oh, do I, am I gonna like this show? You just watch that one, then you're like, alright, watch that, then start from the beginning.

• 54:09Speaker 02

Yeah, Peter Tolan wrote that episode.

• 54:11Sam Morril?

  It's a great one.

• 54:11Speaker 02

He wrote a lot of the best ones, but it is the one we all point to. There's also a funny one with Colin Quinn as Rip Torn's son.

• 54:18Sam Morril?

  Dude.

• 54:19Speaker 02

  It's pretty great.

• 54:20Sam Morril?

Apparently, that was what made Mike Myers want Colin Quinn to be Scott Evil.

• 54:24Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 54:25Sam Morril?

He wanted, he saw that because Colin is like his spoiled son.

• 54:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 54:29Sam Morril?

And he's like, this will be good, and Colin turned down Austin Powers.

• 54:32Mark Normand?

  Yeah, what an idiot.

• 54:35Speaker 02

He didn't see it. I have, you know, Jake Hasen had a funny story where he was up to direct American Pie. And he read the script and he went in for the meeting and he said, you know, I think it's like really good, but like, I don't think you should have this kid fuck a pie. And then he did not get that job.

• 54:51Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 54:52Sam Morril?

He also, he read Star Wars, he's like Darth Vader.

• 54:56Speaker 02

Yeah, sometimes you're just proven completely wrong.

• 54:58Sam Morril?

Yeah, I mean, that's the scene, man. I mean, I feel like you see Jason Biggs now, that's the first thing you think of.

• 55:03Mark Normand?

Of course, of course. I saw that in a, I always say, I saw that movie in a black neighborhood and the, you know, black commentary is always hilarious. And right when they showed the pie, mangled, some guy goes, he tore that shit up.

• 55:16Mark Normand?

Popcorn in the air. So I gotta ask you, we got you here.

• 55:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:20Mark Normand?

So the doc world is exploding right now, I feel like. You got John Candy, Ben Stiller just put one out. You got Charlie Sheen, you got Billy Joel. They're doing one on, is it Downey, the writer?

• 55:32Sam Morril?

  Jim Downey.

• 55:33Mark Normand?

  Jim Downey?

• 55:33Speaker 02

That was a good one, that's on Peacock, that's a funny.

• 55:35Mark Normand?

  Is that out?

• 55:36Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, it's good. It's really good. Because it talks about how he writes and he was the best writer of all time on the show. And when you see what he wrote or what he was part of writing, it's insane.

• 55:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 55:46Speaker 02

It's every, every sketch you that you remember.

• 55:49Mark Normand?

But you, I think, are doing a Norm doc. Is that out there? Is that public?

• 55:54Speaker 02

Yeah, that's public, it's gonna be next year.

• 55:56Mark Normand?

  Woo.

• 55:57Speaker 02

We've been lucky enough to just watch everything.

• 56:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 56:00Speaker 02

  Like really everything.

• 56:01Sam Morril?

  Well, or not?

• 56:02Speaker 02

  Yeah, I'm directing.

• 56:02Mark Normand?

  Oh, this is exciting.

• 56:04Sam Morril?

Yeah, I mean, you did, so you did the Shandling one, you did the Carlin one, they were both, I love them both.

• 56:07Mark Normand?

  Both great.

• 56:09Speaker 02

Yeah, well, people love Norm, so it's a... You know, I think people are gonna really enjoy it because also it's fun to dig up the stuff that, you know, is hard to find, or just things that he's talking about that unless you were like the most hardcore fan, you would never find this conversation and his opinions about these things. Because you know, I used to write with Norm for Roseanne, like we were hired to write her act, like her stand-up act, and we would go to her house on the weekends. Better than writing her tweets. We would go to her house on the weekends and write jokes for her. She'd bring out like a big stack of legal pads, and then she would tell us thoughts she had. And, you know, he quickly left because he got hired on the TV show. Like, she was so impressed

• 56:52Speaker 02

with him. She's like, you're gonna write on my TV show. And then I had to work for another year writing this HBO special with her that she did. Like, she would have, there was one funny one where she said, "I wanna do a joke about how it's better to suck dick than kiss ass. Because when you suck dick, it's like an agreement. I'll suck your dick and then you'll give me this. But when you kiss ass, it's just for the hope that you might do it."

• 57:21Mark Normand?

  Ah, that's good.

• 57:22Sam Morril?

  It's like Dirty Seinfeld.

• 57:23Mark Normand?

What's the deal with sucking dick? It's a blowjob, but you don't get paid. But yeah, wow. So Norm was, like, he's my guy. He's my number one. And there's so much content. Like, that's the, I feel like I've seen all of it because I'm a psycho, but there's so much. He was, he gave so much for a guy who died young. Like, the Conens and the podcasts and the TV show on Netflix, the YouTube show, and all the stand-up. It's like never-ending, and SNL.

• 57:53Speaker 02

Yeah. That's what I thought was most impressive about it. Because when you really look at it, like, how many comedy-defining moments did Norm have that are like, you know, world-class, memorable?

• 58:07Sam Morril?

  Risky, too.

• 58:08Speaker 02

You know, him doing the Espy monologue, or him doing the Bob Saget roast. He said all nice things from a joke book. And you started listing it, and there's so many times that he did a shockingly insanely original take on something. And I think that's fun to just see how his mind works.

• 58:29Mark Normand?

The Conan Carrot Top moment, where Conan falls out of his chair. And there's so many iconic comedy moments.

• 58:34Sam Morril?

When he brings Conan the gift bag for getting the Tonight Show. I mean, and then he's just leaving like that next week. I mean, it was just, he always had a, yeah, on panel, it was like, it was always gold, man.

• 58:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 58:48Speaker 02

I mean, the heartbreaking part is you can't show all of it, you know, because you have limited time. There's one that I couldn't get in that maybe you know, maybe you could tell, which is the Bill Cosby story, about his dad.

• 59:00Mark Normand?

  Yes, about calling him. Yeah.

• 59:02Sam Morril?

And he forgot his dad was dead.

• 59:03Mark Normand?

Yeah, exactly. But he didn't want to say that to Bill Cosby. He's like, we called your dad. He didn't answer the phone. He's like, ah, I don't know what to tell you, or whatever.

• 59:12Sam Morril?

  What, um, yeah.

• 59:13Mark Normand?

And the firing, him getting fired, then him going on Letterman to talk about getting fired. I mean, that was amazing TV for that time.

• 59:19Sam Morril?

They had a special thing. Letterman, Letterman really got Norm. I don't know, I mean, so did Conan for sure, but he's a guy that like, if you don't have the right interviewer, it's not going to be as good.

• 59:29Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 59:30Speaker 02

The Letterman interviews, when you re-watch them carefully, because I think for a lot of years, when you would watch Letterman, you wondered how much he liked people. Like, that was part of the fun of the show, is like, is he enjoying talking to people? And when he talks to Norm, he literally looks like he's in heaven.

• 59:46Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 59:46Speaker 02

Like, he's so excited to see what he's gonna do. And Norm would push it and be edgier or grosser than most people, because people were always like warned off, like, Letterman doesn't like when you get kinda, you know, weird in that way. And, uh, and Letterman was just tickled. And I think, you know, what came out is that Norm was really influenced by him.

• 1:00:05Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:00:06Speaker 02

Because I think on one of his last appearances, he did one of Letterman's bits.

• 1:00:10Mark Normand?

  Totally.

• 1:00:10Speaker 02

And when he did one of Letterman's old bits.

• 1:00:12Sam Morril?

  Simple pleasures.

• 1:00:13Speaker 02

Yeah, right? And you go, oh, that was the beginning of him figuring out his style.

• 1:00:18Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:19Speaker 02

And then he did, uh, I mean, what was that, the last routine he did?

• 1:00:24Sam Morril?

Oh, the World War II joke.

• 1:00:25Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 1:00:26Sam Morril?

  Yeah, the identification joke.

• 1:00:27Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:00:28Sam Morril?

And then he, it was rare to see him get emotional. And, and you could see Dave fighting off, getting emotional, because that's not his thing. And he could tell, be like, you could tell it was hard for both of them. I was like, wow, this was like, that was a heavy TV moment.

• 1:00:41Speaker 02

Yeah, and a big deal, because Norm was going through something that people didn't know about.

• 1:00:45Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:00:45Speaker 02

And he wanted to take. The opportunity to tell Letterman that, you know, he loved him and how important he was to him. And Letterman didn't see that coming, that someone would be so vulnerable.

• 1:00:56Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:56Speaker 02

  And caring at that time.

• 1:00:58Mark Normand?

And I love a comic who, he's clearly such a smart guy, he's like well read on Dostoevsky and all this shit. And he's like, brilliant dude, you know, he had his problems, but his jokes were so silly. Like he had a great joke where he would do on his TV show, where he'd read the cue cards or the little blue cards. He was like, yeah, Donnie Wahlberg and Jenny McCarthy are, are getting married. They're doing it on Retard Island. You know, like that joke kills me, but that's the dumbest joke on the planet.

• 1:01:27Speaker 02

It's funny because you know how good he is.

• 1:01:28Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 1:01:29Speaker 02

And you don't see that bad a joke coming from him, and that's funny. Well, on the talk show, he definitely liked doing really bad jokes.

• 1:01:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:36Speaker 02

That threw you like, wait, is that even a joke? Or, or, or it would be like edgy in a way like you didn't see coming.

• 1:01:43Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:43Speaker 02

I mean, he really has some jokes, like when you watch all of them, like from that ear or update where you're like, wow, that joke would really get you in trouble.

• 1:01:52Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:01:52Sam Morril?

He's walking a tightrope. There was like this, this.

• 1:01:55Mark Normand?

  It was a danger.

• 1:01:56Sam Morril?

It was an air of discomfort where you're just like, what's gonna happen? Like what, like one misstep, you're like, this could go really fucking south in a bad comedian's hands, but he was just so good.

• 1:02:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:05Sam Morril?

I have one, this prized possession I have, I have like a hundred and fifty old film noirs that Adam Eget gave me. And he's like, this was meant for Norm, because he's the only guy I know who loves noir as much as you. So he gave me this hard drive. I have like a hundred and fifty old movies.

• 1:02:16Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:02:17Sam Morril?

He's like, oh, Norm liked this. I was like, fuck, Norm loved noir. I didn't even know that.

• 1:02:20Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:21Sam Morril?

• 1:08:11Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:12Speaker 02

Yeah, no, it's, I mean, and that's what I like about documentaries is, you know, we love Norm so much, but I'm just so fascinated by like, who was Norm?

• 1:08:20Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:08:21Speaker 02

And how we did this was like, it's like a found-footage documentary, so we didn't interview people.

• 1:08:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:26Speaker 02

We didn't like get people, like dissecting him, it's just Norm.

• 1:08:29Mark Normand?

  Great, great.

• 1:08:30Speaker 02

You know, and, and, because like, you know, when Norm passed and I went down the rabbit hole, they were incredible interviews, like, you know, morning radio in Hawaii.

• 1:08:40Mark Normand?

  Oh!

• 1:08:40Speaker 02

And he does it in like, two hours, and, and he's so funny, but they can't tell when he means it, when he doesn't mean it, you know? And that stuff is pretty priceless.

• 1:08:50Mark Normand?

Some of his, I'm a nerd, but some of his best stuff, he did Chris Hardwick's pod a couple times. And those are incredible, like treasures, because he opens up and he stops being, trying to be funny, and he's just on. And going, and he goes, "You know what I hate is all these comics now doing one-man shows about having cancer." Like, everybody gets cancer, shut up, you're not special." Cancer is not an accomplishment, not knowing the whole time he had cancer.

• 1:09:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:14Mark Normand?

And he was like shitting on them like I could come out and say it. And I would get a bunch of clicks and.

• 1:09:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:19Mark Normand?

You know, victim points, but I'm just gonna keep being funny.

• 1:09:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:22Mark Normand?

  He was the purist.

• 1:09:24Speaker 02

And also, you know, he had cancer when he was really young.

• 1:09:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:27Speaker 02

Twenties and he got over it and then he got it again later in life.

• 1:09:30Sam Morril?

  I didn't know that.

• 1:09:30Speaker 02

So, you know, when you think about his personality and just that, like, I don't give a shit energy.

• 1:09:35Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:36Speaker 02

You know, it is like through the prism of someone who's seeing life in a, in a much deeper way.

• 1:09:40Sam Morril?

Well, you wrote about this in your book about funny people.

• 1:09:42Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:09:42Sam Morril?

And was it your mom, someone got really sick?

• 1:09:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:45Sam Morril?

And then, uh, and she was like, she had like no worries when she was really sick. And then she got better and.

• 1:09:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:52Sam Morril?

And it's, it like came back. It's like you did that with the character in Funny People, right?

• 1:09:55Speaker 02

Yeah, cause yeah, every time she thought she would survive, all of her neuroses and crazy would come back. And every time she thought she had no chance, the medicine's not working, she would get really like serene and, and mellow and pleasant and. Well, I'd seen that with other people too, where like you get sick and you suddenly like you can just see everything clearly and what's important and how you should treat people. But when you get better, it, it is like a weird thing that you were, it's hard to hold on to that feeling.

• 1:10:20Mark Normand?

Yeah, and I wonder if that's why he could gamble away 400 grand and just be like, nah, what are you gonna do? Cause he's like, I'm still alive. You know, I have cancer.

• 1:10:28Sam Morril?

Yeah, but that's a bad, that's, I think he was a, must have been a gambling addict.

• 1:10:30Mark Normand?

Oh, he had a problem, for sure.

• 1:10:31Sam Morril?

  That's insane to do that.

• 1:10:33Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:10:34Sam Morril?

That's insane to piss away that kind of money on chance.

• 1:10:36Speaker 02

But also, we don't even know if that's true because like I've talked to people and they're like, like he's exaggerating the losses or like. Uh. It's very Bob Dylan-esque in the sense that he's not a reliable narrator.

• 1:10:47Sam Morril?

And we're talking about it and it makes him, it adds a mystique, I guess.

• 1:10:50Speaker 02

Yeah, we just don't really know. I mean, clearly he was gambling.

• 1:10:54Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:10:54Speaker 02

And had some problems with that, but like the stories, I mean.

• 1:10:57Sam Morril?

  That he lost everything.

• 1:10:59Speaker 02

Uh, yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm sure he took some hits and maybe he did lose everything, but I don't think he lost that much in one day like.

• 1:11:04Mark Normand?

  Mm.

• 1:11:04Speaker 02

But, but who knows? It's like, you know, I'm doing a documentary about Mel Brooks.

• 1:11:08Mark Normand?

  Oh, nice.

• 1:11:09Speaker 02

And I said to him, Mel, are any of these stories true? That you tell all these like funny stories and he's like, no, I make them up.

• 1:11:19Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:11:19Speaker 02

They're all apocryphal. He's like, he's like, I change them. I punch them.

• 1:11:23Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:23Speaker 02

You know, so that's also part of everyone's a storyteller.

• 1:11:26Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:11:27Speaker 02

You know, so you have to work to try to figure out, okay, where is the truth in this?

• 1:11:31Mark Normand?

  God.

• 1:11:32Speaker 02

And does it matter where the truth is?

• 1:11:33Mark Normand?

  Sure, it's funny.

• 1:11:34Speaker 02

Do we care if the stories are?

• 1:11:36Sam Morril?

Well, I remember there was like a movement of like honesty, like one man show type comedy where like that was valued over funny. But to me like, who gives a fuck if you're laughing, you're laughing, right?

• 1:11:45Mark Normand?

  I agree.

• 1:11:45Sam Morril?

As long as the joke isn't, isn't the truth.

• 1:11:49Speaker 02

I mean, I assume in, in everything, nothing is completely accurate, even in documentaries. I mean, it's only my point of view. And so I can, you know, have a different point of view from someone else who was there. It's like the vibe I put into it, you know?

• 1:12:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:04Speaker 02

Like some people might go, oh, I think that person was happier than that. And you kind of made him seem sad or.

• 1:12:08Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:12:09Speaker 02

Or you made him seem, you know, just like a different vibe than he was based on what you choose to put in it.

• 1:12:14Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:12:14Speaker 02

And so that's the interesting part about it.

• 1:12:16Mark Normand?

Well, I'm just glad you're documenting all this stuff. Cause like, sometimes I'll just watch comedies in cars and you're like, oh man, we have Brooks and Carl Reiner having soup together. Or we have Jerry Lewis. We have an hour with Jerry Lewis, an hour with Don Rickles and they're all gone now.

• 1:12:30Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 1:12:31Mark Normand?

And you're like, we got this now. Thank God.

• 1:12:32Sam Morril?

And the Rickles doc was good. I mean, it's cool. You know, Joan had that cool doc at the end.

• 1:12:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:12:37Sam Morril?

It's, it's nice to, uh, you know, to see these people's lives. They were groundbreaking like Rickles was, it's insane.

• 1:12:45Mark Normand?

  I know. Crazy.

• 1:12:46Speaker 02

Well, if you don't have these docs, I think in the future, people won't know what these people were about at all. Right?

• 1:12:51Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:51Speaker 02

So if there's a Norm MacDonald doc, you know, in 30 years, someone might watch the documentary and that's your path into going down the rabbit hole. To look at everything.

• 1:13:00Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:00Speaker 02

Like with George Carlin, you know, people didn't really know much about his journey and his life, but they probably will start with an interesting doc first. But, and some people don't have them and you go, oh, did we never really, you know, learn about them in the way they should.

• 1:13:15Mark Normand?

Totally. I mean, we had so little. I mean, you're, you're older than us. So like when I started, there was On Comedy. Remember that CD or whatever it was? That was it.

• 1:13:23Speaker 02

  It was like the Carson.

• 1:13:24Sam Morril?

  Interview?

• 1:13:24Mark Normand?

Yes, yeah, Carson, they had Seinfeld one.

• 1:13:27Sam Morril?

  Oh, yeah, Terry Gross ones.

• 1:13:28Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:29Sam Morril?

Terry Gross and like Jackie Mason, Henny Youngman, they're good interviews, they're cool.

• 1:13:33Mark Normand?

Sure, but then you had a special and then like five minutes on Carson or Letterman or whatever, and that's all you had of stand up. It was like this weird elusive thing and now this podcast and documentaries and so it's nice.

• 1:13:43Sam Morril?

  Too much.

• 1:13:44Mark Normand?

I know, that was a lot.

• 1:13:46Speaker 02

But like I love the Bill Hicks documentary.

• 1:13:48Mark Normand?

  That was fun.

• 1:13:48Speaker 02

  Is a really good one.

• 1:13:50Mark Normand?

  American Scream?

• 1:13:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:52Mark Normand?

Something like that, yeah, that was great. When he said, uh, I showed up to the improv and I couldn't believe there was a building built for this thing I love. I think about that all the time.

• 1:14:00Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:00Mark Normand?

You know, you show up at like Comedy Works in Denver, you're like, wow, this is a cool room, I get to, this is for me.

• 1:14:06Sam Morril?

Bill Hicks doing like the weirdest, most random cities at flying saucer tour.

• 1:14:10Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:14:11Sam Morril?

Where he's bombing with these brilliant jokes.

• 1:14:13Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:14:14Sam Morril?

It's incredible. It's actually like, listening to those, you're like, holy shit, and he's such a dick to the crowd.

• 1:14:18Mark Normand?

  I know, I know.

• 1:14:19Sam Morril?

When he says stuff like, don't worry guys, there's a purple veiny dick joke around the corner. He's so condescending, these people, it's so funny though.

• 1:14:26Speaker 02

But you know, it was such a different time than like late eighties stand up because a guy like Bill Hicks, he wasn't that famous. And so we look at him as legend.

• 1:14:38Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:14:39Speaker 02

But at the time, he is a road dog.

• 1:14:41Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:14:42Speaker 02

And he's running around and he's playing these like funny bones in small cities and you know, crowds are coming, but not to see him probably a fair amount of the time.

• 1:14:49Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:14:50Speaker 02

And so he's at war with the crowd.

• 1:14:51Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:14:52Speaker 02

And if they're not smart and they're not good, like it becomes a different dynamic and something explosive happens in the room as he's like battling to teach them something or yell at them for not getting it, because he's also doing a lot of stuff, you know, deep in the south.

• 1:15:07Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 1:15:08Speaker 02

  And he.

• 1:15:08Sam Morril?

He actually went to these places, all these kind of like, you know, political comics now who only play to people of their own ideology. Whereas Bill was actually in the sticks telling them shit they didn't hear.

• 1:15:19Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:19Sam Morril?

And that's the difference with Bill and a lot of these comics now who are like political comics. But, uh, which is, which is brave, I think, but then also Bill dying at what, thirty two or thirty three, whenever he died? And not being known and then being known after death is almost like an art, but you're at like a, you're at like. You know, the Met or something and you're like, this guy died in poverty at 28.

• 1:15:38Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:38Sam Morril?

  And now he's huge.

• 1:15:40Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, he, you know, it was a big deal to be the guy out there saying like the, you know, the war in Iraq is wrong.

• 1:15:48Sam Morril?

  Right, right.

• 1:15:50Speaker 02

  In the 80s.

• 1:15:51Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:51Speaker 02

You know, like he, it was early 90s. It was like more shocking, like for him to go on stage and talk about why drugs are good.

• 1:15:59Sam Morril?

  Yes.

• 1:16:00Speaker 02

You know, so many of those ideas had never been covered in that.

• 1:16:03Sam Morril?

  Totally, totally.

• 1:16:04Speaker 02

  Before.

• 1:16:04Mark Normand?

And then he get, he got kicked off Letterman.

• 1:16:06Speaker 02

Well, the last time he did Letterman, he did a really edgy set and I guess there was some abortion material in it and they didn't air it. And then, like, after he died, like, you know, not soon, like, years later.

• 1:16:20Sam Morril?

  He had his mom on.

• 1:16:21Speaker 02

  Letterman had his mom on.

• 1:16:22Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:23Speaker 02

  And he played the set.

• 1:16:25Sam Morril?

  That's right.

• 1:16:26Speaker 02

And it was, it was kind of an amazing moment.

• 1:16:28Sam Morril?

  Yeah. Damn.

• 1:16:30Speaker 02

And then you see the set and you're like, it doesn't seem.

• 1:16:32Sam Morril?

  I know.

• 1:16:33Speaker 02

  That level edgy.

• 1:16:33Sam Morril?

Feel now, like you try to, I mean, Late Night's obviously dead in terms, especially with standup now. It's like you put together a set, no, it's not really worth the work for anyone now. Which is a shame, because I think there's something cool about the rush of doing a set.

• 1:16:46Speaker 02

  Of course, yeah.

• 1:16:47Sam Morril?

Even if it's a horrible, it's not ideal at all, you're 5pm in Burbank, whatever you're doing, you know, it's a nightmare, but there is something cool about it still, like throwing a suit on, you're like, oh, this isn't normal, this is.

• 1:16:57Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:16:57Speaker 02

  Well, it's a sprint.

• 1:16:58Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:58Speaker 02

Right? Like, everyone is so used to the long sets.

• 1:17:01Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 1:17:01Speaker 02

And back then, you were designing everything in your act for the six-minute hunks.

• 1:17:06Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:07Speaker 02

And you had to like get the crowd to figure out who you are in like a minute.

• 1:17:11Sam Morril?

  Yep.

• 1:17:12Speaker 02

And then try to get some kind of momentum and, and really strong.

• 1:17:16Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:16Speaker 02

And have a bunch of them ready to go.

• 1:17:19Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:19Speaker 02

It was a different kind of terror.

• 1:17:21Sam Morril?

But that first joke on the Late Night set's usually just like a throwaway.

• 1:17:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:25Sam Morril?

Because it never, it's, you throw in a good joke and it never gets what it deserves and you're like, fuck, I like that joke.

• 1:17:30Mark Normand?

I know, it's like riding a bike where you have to get that momentum, now I'm, now I'm rolling. But that first couple pedals is hard.

• 1:17:35Sam Morril?

Get them into the rhythm, yeah, I mean, but you talk about doing the Young Comedians special in the book with Ray Romano, I think the Apollo is on it.

• 1:17:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:17:42Sam Morril?

And, and you said how you just like, you. Never cursed, but you were on HBO. So you're like, you just kept throwing in fucks for no reason?

• 1:17:48Speaker 02

Yeah, the fuck wasn't part of the punchlines. I'm just like, this fucking guy. And then they would play it on Comedy Central all the time, that special, and they would beep all the fucks. And it's like a Richard Pryor routine, but they're not for any good reason, or any good joke. But when we, when we taped that, it was in Arizona, and Ray Romano was just so funny. Like, we were taping the special, and they would do interstitials, where they would interview each of us for promos or things to put between the comics. And Ray was just smoking everything. He was just killing. And it was a moment where we all went, oh, my God, it's Ray.

• 1:18:24Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:24Speaker 02

Ray's gonna be the big guy.

• 1:18:26Mark Normand?

God, I saw him like a month ago at the Cellar, and he had great new stuff. And I go, that one joke about the texting your wife is brilliant. He goes, that's just what happened. I didn't even write anything. Like, he's still killing. He was murdering.

• 1:18:37Sam Morril?

Yeah, he's good, man. He's good. He's good.

• 1:18:40Mark Normand?

  And squeaky, squeaky clean.

• 1:18:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:18:43Sam Morril?

  Looks good, too.

• 1:18:44Mark Normand?

  He looks great.

• 1:18:44Sam Morril?

Yeah. Well, so it's amazing going through like the book, where you have like, you know, you're talking about like, you have Forty Year Old Virgin knocked up, and then all this stuff you're just involved in, where it's like Pineapple Express.

• 1:18:54Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:54Sam Morril?

Bridesmaids, all these movies are like, it does bum me out that we don't see movies like this.

• 1:19:00Mark Normand?

  I know, I know.

• 1:19:01Sam Morril?

We're working on one. We'll see what happens there, but you know.

• 1:19:04Speaker 02

It'll be done. We gotta bang the door down.

• 1:19:05Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:19:06Speaker 02

You know, I mean, it's a weird moment. I mean.

• 1:19:08Sam Morril?

  Are you optimistic about it?

• 1:19:09Speaker 02

I don't know. I mean, I feel like everything is changing in a way that is so weird. There's gonna be so much like AI slop and crazy coming at us. So obviously, thank God for live, because that is what people are gonna want. Because they're gonna, their eyes are gonna be blood red from watching just terrible stuff on their computers and phones all day. And they're just gonna wanna see real stuff with real people. But for comedy movies, I think that, you know, when DVD went away.

• 1:19:38Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:38Speaker 02

That was half the money a comedy movie would make. So when there were no DVDs, suddenly it was a bigger bet to make a comedy, where you could make a horror movie for five million dollars. But a comedy might need twenty, twenty-five million dollars to do a good one. And so they just started betting elsewhere. And then writers go, oh, there's no money in writing these screenplays. And then they just go, I'll just learn how to write. A horror movie or something else.

• 1:20:01Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:20:02Speaker 02

And next thing you know, it kind of doom loops.

• 1:20:04Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:20:04Speaker 02

In a way, but it, but you know, it's always one giant hit away from becoming a market.

• 1:20:08Sam Morril?

But all the hits aren't comedies. Like, it's not Oppen. I guess Barbie's technically a comedy, but like,

• 1:20:13Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:20:14Sam Morril?

But like, it's like Oppenheimer. It's a movie like Weapons. It's like, it's like horror movies are like big budget.

• 1:20:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:20Sam Morril?

I'm sure the, I'm sure The Odyssey will be a hit, you know, but.

• 1:20:22Mark Normand?

But then we both saw One Battle After Another and you're like, this movie's amazing. Oh, my God. Cinema's back. And then you hear it's made, it's lost millions.

• 1:20:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:30Mark Normand?

And you're like, God, if this can't be a hit and make money.

• 1:20:33Speaker 02

Did you see that? I haven't seen it yet.

• 1:20:34Mark Normand?

  Oh, great. It's great.

• 1:20:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:36Mark Normand?

  But it's losing money.

• 1:20:37Sam Morril?

In his book, Judd talks about needing help editing funny people and he brings in Paul Thomas Anderson to edit. It was just like, hilarious. It's like, you're like, I'll just call one of the best directors ever to look at it.

• 1:20:50Speaker 02

Well, he had, you know, just done Punch in Club, which is one of my favorite movies of all time.

• 1:20:55Mark Normand?

  Great movie.

• 1:20:55Speaker 02

And so he came to see the movie at one of the previews and he's so nice and obviously the best. And so I said, you want to come in and help me? Cause he's like, you know, the movie's too long. And you know, when you hear that from me.

• 1:21:10Speaker 02

  To take it seriously.

• 1:21:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:12Speaker 02

So I go, why don't you just come in and just like, show me where the cuts are. Cause you know, I really fall in love with the story. And if I lay it out and it just feels like this is the story, if it's 15, 20 minutes longer, I personally don't care at all. I'm like, well, that's just how long it takes to tell this. And so he went through it with me. And then I couldn't quite figure out how to time the ending. And I said, you want to like to just take a pop in the ending? I'll just go get something to eat and.

• 1:21:36Sam Morril?

Whoa. What does that mean when you say that? Is he just like in a room?

• 1:21:39Speaker 02

Yeah, with the editor. Yeah, you know, and I said like, you know, because there's that scene, it's in the supermarket. And at the end of the movie, Sandler pulls out these notes that he wrote some jokes for Seth, which we all know. If an older comedian wrote you a joke when you're a young comedian, that's crazy.

• 1:21:56Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:21:57Speaker 02

It's very rare that they're gonna do something and that was like a sign that he was apologizing and that he wanted to be friends with him. But I couldn't figure out the song or when to cut to the credits and, and there was a song, we were thinking about Comedy Tonight. You know that song? Something familiar. Comedy Tonight. It's from the old Larry Gilbart play. Um, with Zero Mustel in it. People will know.

• 1:22:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:23Speaker 02

But anyway, so I left and then he. He cut it and it looked exactly like a Paul Thomas Anderson movie.

• 1:22:32Mark Normand?

  Oh, no.

• 1:22:33Speaker 02

I mean, it literally was like, oh, I could just give you my footage.

• 1:22:36Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:37Speaker 02

And your point of view is so clear and strong.

• 1:22:39Sam Morril?

I would love to see the Paul Thomas Anderson forty year old version.

• 1:22:42Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, it kind of blew my mind. I'm like, wait, this feels like him. Just like, you know, he edited to the music on an offbeat.

• 1:22:50Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:22:50Speaker 02

And then cut to black and like earlier than I would have. And it was a real lesson in the power of those choices.

• 1:22:58Sam Morril?

It's like when a comic gives you a tag, but it's entirely in their voice.

• 1:23:01Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 1:23:01Sam Morril?

  Yeah, I can't, I can't use that.

• 1:23:03Mark Normand?

And that's risky. Giving your movie to him and then get, I mean, that's like leaving your wife with Idris Elba.

• 1:23:08Mark Normand?

  You might not come back.

• 1:23:09Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:23:11Mark Normand?

But did you kind of go back and tweak it and make it your own?

• 1:23:14Speaker 02

Well, what's funny is I tested it in a version similar to that. And the movie was really long. It got longer. Maybe it was like two hours and like maybe like seven, like twenty two minutes.

• 1:23:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:26Sam Morril?

Damn. So when you're doing that, are you like, I gotta get this under two? Or you're like, whatever?

• 1:23:30Speaker 02

Well, I'm always like, I'm okay at like two ten. Like, I know people want it to be one forty five, one fifty. And I'm like, you know what? Relax. Where are you going? What do you gotta get home to?

• 1:23:40Sam Morril?

Do you ever regret it? Or are you always like, no, fuck it. It was right?

• 1:23:43Speaker 02

I never regret it only in the sense that I never have people like ten years later say that it was too long. I think it's like a movie theater experience because like when you're in a theater, you're kind of antsy. But most people watch it at home anyway and they pause and take a piss and

• 1:23:56Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:23:56Speaker 02

have a sandwich. And so it's not the ongoing debate. It's just what, you know, what does it take to get to know the characters? And so I tested it and it tested the highest it ever tested. You know, so you ask the crowd, how many people out of three hundred people think this movie is excellent or very good? And that's like the number. And if you can be in like the eighties or above, you're pretty good. And it was, it tested really high, but then I still cut like ten, twelve minutes out of it. And sometimes I regret that. There was a scene where he goes back to work at the end of the movie and you see Sandler on a movie set and he's making a hot dog eating competition movie. And you kind of see him kind of hating his life making this movie that he doesn't like.

• 1:24:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:37Speaker 02

And I'm the director and I'm trying to get him to eat six hot dogs in one take. I'm like, I just want to do a wonder.

• 1:24:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:44Speaker 02

Where you eat, where we could see you eat six hot dogs. We just have to get it once and it's just him going, I just had leukemia. Six hot dogs and it's me trying to trick him into giving me one take.

• 1:24:55Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 1:24:56Speaker 02

And it was a pretty funny scene, but the movie was just, it was just too long.

• 1:24:59Mark Normand?

  So funny, all that's gone.

• 1:25:01Speaker 02

  All that's gone.

• 1:25:02Mark Normand?

That's just on a cutting room floor. Wow. Well, we, we wrote a movie and they, we were, were close to getting this thing made and they keep saying, cut it, cut it down, shorten it, shorten it. So we had to get.

• 1:25:11Sam Morril?

But the problem was we fucking, they wanted it longer originally. So we were like 120 and we're like, this is too fucking long for what this movie is, right?

• 1:25:18Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:18Sam Morril?

And then they're like, it needs to be a hundred. And we're like, you made us write 120.

• 1:25:23Mark Normand?

  So we added it.

• 1:25:24Sam Morril?

So we, well, we, we cut it down. I think, I think we're in a good place.

• 1:25:26Mark Normand?

Yeah, but it did these queefs with their notes. You gotta keep applying their notes. You're like, you're, you're making us cut jokes.

• 1:25:33Sam Morril?

  Well, that's part of.

• 1:25:33Mark Normand?

  We fought to. That's true.

• 1:25:35Sam Morril?

We were pretty good about keeping the joke.

• 1:25:36Speaker 02

I mean, that's part of what the book is about because, you know, I, I wanted the book to also be about all of the failures and everything that went wrong and why it went wrong. So I put in all the pilots that didn't get picked up, all the shows that were canceled.

• 1:25:49Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:25:50Speaker 02

And, and just talked about where I handled it wrong because, you know, there's an art to, to getting notes and having a conversation and not wanting to be upset with the people giving you the notes because, you know, usually some of them are good, some of them aren't. And so can you have that conversation without losing your mind, without losing your temper?

• 1:26:10Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:26:10Sam Morril?

What's the worst you lost, do you think?

• 1:26:13Speaker 02

I mean, I, I was, I started out really bad because I got advice that I misinterpreted as a kid where, uh, this friend of mine, um, was running in Living Color and I was doing the Ben Stiller Show and he just said to me, he goes, like, don't change anything for them. Because if they screw up your pilot and it's bad because of their notes, they'll never apologize to you. They'll never say we screwed up your pilot. So don't change anything for them that you don't want to change. Because you only get one shot at it. And I really took that in for years and was very resistant. And so sometimes when we were doing the Ben Stiller Show, you know, the executive, who's usually like a mid-level guy,

• 1:26:54Speaker 02

and he's getting notes from his boss, and he gets in trouble if I don't do them. And he'll have all this laundry list of notes, a lot of which will ruin everything we're trying to do. And I just remember once, I'm like, well, I'm doing nothing. I said, I'm doing none of them. What happens now?

• 1:27:11Mark Normand?

  Ooh, and?

• 1:27:13Speaker 02

  We got canceled.

• 1:27:17Speaker 02

You know, because there's nothing worse.

• 1:27:19Sam Morril?

With the people you're working with, like, dude, what the fuck are you doing?

• 1:27:22Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:22Speaker 02

Well, they were private conversations. But yeah, we did have that feeling like, did you just screw all this up? Because right when the Ben Stiller Show started, the head of the network changed. So it went from someone who loved it to someone who didn't.

• 1:27:37Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:27:37Speaker 02

And then I was like, well, why would you take notes for someone who doesn't like it at all?

• 1:27:41Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:42Speaker 02

So he's going to tweak it, but he doesn't like it.

• 1:27:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:46Speaker 02

And so I was very resistant.

• 1:27:48Mark Normand?

Why do these execs ever get fired? You always hear the guys like?

• 1:27:51Sam Morril?

  They get fired constantly.

• 1:27:52Mark Normand?

  Do they?

• 1:27:52Sam Morril?

I took a show out, the people we pitched to were different like six months later.

• 1:27:56Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:27:57Sam Morril?

No, they're getting fired constantly. That's probably why they're living in such fear, I think.

• 1:28:00Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's why there's a panic.

• 1:28:01Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:02Speaker 02

You know, I've been lucky, like in movies, the people I've worked with, I've worked with for like 18 years. And so we know each other and they're really smart and the notes are really good. And I realized, oh, you have to find the people that get you.

• 1:28:12Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:13Speaker 02

Because that's most of it. Like, if you wind up selling something to someone that doesn't get the joke, it's very painful. And if you find people who are really smart, like the people in Universal have been so smart, like, they've given me tough notes that have been correct. And so we like, we get each other and we can have an honest conversation.

• 1:28:30Mark Normand?

  Got it.

• 1:28:30Sam Morril?

It's, it's very difficult to break into that world now, I think. I mean, not that it was easy back then, but like, I think right now, it's like, we're finding like, wow, this is pretty crazy. I mean, you know, I wrote a show that we got Brian Cox attached to. We struck out everywhere with him on the fucking pitches. And now it's like, we have to go, you know, independent financing, which we're going to, which is, it'll be fine. But it's like, I'm like, this fucking Brian Cox.

• 1:28:54Mark Normand?

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:28:55Sam Morril?

  But uh.

• 1:28:55Speaker 02

It's always been that way. Like, it's always been intense that way where you feel like you're in this environment where you're trying to be creative. Everything is an experiment.

• 1:29:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:04Speaker 02

I think it works, but how do I know? I'm only going on like a gut instinct. But if you challenge me too much, I might lose touch with the part of me that gets why it works.

• 1:29:15Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:29:15Speaker 02

And so like as it shifts, I might lose it.

• 1:29:18Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:29:19Speaker 02

And so I'm trying to figure out like, when should I listen? When should I not listen? Because I might lose the thread at some point. And that's the dance and some people understand that.

• 1:29:27Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:28Speaker 02

But if you're really nervous about your gig and your boss is mad at you and your last TV show got canceled. You might get different kinds of notes.

• 1:29:36Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 1:29:37Speaker 02

And none of us have got had like the, the, the therapy or, you know, the training to know that that's such a delicate conversation. Like if someone went through your act and just said, I'm going to tell you which of your jokes are good, which aren't. Like you want to throttle them. Like your instant thing is like to be a protector, right? And, and, but.

• 1:29:56Mark Normand?

Especially when it's a comic you don't respect.

• 1:29:59Speaker 02

I'm like, oh, you didn't like that one? Have you seen your act?

• 1:30:02Mark Normand?

I know, I know. That's always weird. But at least now we have the advantage of, because Tom Segura was in here and he's pitched, he sold some show. What's it called? Bad.

• 1:30:10Sam Morril?

  Bad thing?

• 1:30:11Mark Normand?

  Bad things, something like that.

• 1:30:12Sam Morril?

  Bad thought.

• 1:30:13Mark Normand?

Bad thoughts. It's a wild show. It's dark. It's gory. It's sexy, gross. And he goes, I pitched this. They hated it. They never gave me the time of day. Then I shot it. I spent all the money and then I brought it back and they sold it or they bought it in the room.

• 1:30:27Sam Morril?

It's literally what we had to do with our comedy specials.

• 1:30:30Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:30:31Sam Morril?

Shows and movies now. But, you know, there's people that want to get it. It's, it's fun to make stuff and there's people that want to get into this game as investors. I mean, it's not, not doable.

• 1:30:39Mark Normand?

Yeah. You just got to prove it a little bit now.

• 1:30:41Speaker 02

You have to find new paths and use the technology because it's cheaper to make things.

• 1:30:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:46Speaker 02

I mean, it's hard with movies because there's, there's all sorts of. Costs that you would never assume are there, but you, if you're scrappy, you can make cool comedy things. When I, you know, when I started out, what were you gonna do? Get like a super eight?

• 1:30:59Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:31:00Speaker 02

Camera, but you know, with a Canon camera, you can make a movie. Lena Dunham's first movie, she made for 50 grand on just a Canon, like a camera anyone would have.

• 1:31:09Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 1:31:10Speaker 02

And it looked great. She just had an amazing cinematographer, Jodie Lee Lipes, who went on to do Girls, and it launched her career. So I feel like now, we need people to have the energy to just make stuff down and dirty, the way like Swingers was made, or Clerks or something.

• 1:31:25Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:31:26Sam Morril?

Clerks is a great example too. I mean, cause it's so dialogue driven.

• 1:31:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:31:30Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:31:31Sam Morril?

And you talk about horror movies, it's like, okay, well, if it's psychological, it's gonna be a lot of dialogue, right? So get back to writing good dialogue, I think is really the thing.

• 1:31:39Mark Normand?

Like, the other horror movies got a lot of that.

• 1:31:41Sam Morril?

  It's very dialogue heavy.

• 1:31:42Mark Normand?

  It's all jokes.

• 1:31:43Sam Morril?

We wrote a couple of big things in where they're like, do we need a yacht for this scene? And we're like, yes, non-negotiable.

• 1:31:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:49Speaker 02

Well, you know, we did that with Pineapple Express because we knew we had a limited amount of money. We wanted it to feel like an action movie, but we didn't have an action movie budget.

• 1:31:56Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:31:56Speaker 02

So if, you know, if you watch it, the opening scene is Seth and Franco getting high for like 11 minutes. And then, you know, you know, there's a little like, you know, someone gets shot, and then they get scared, and they run in the woods. And they're just like alone in the woods, high.

• 1:32:10Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:10Speaker 02

Like, for another 10 minutes. And so, and then that saved us enough money to do like one big kind of car chase.

• 1:32:16Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:32:17Sam Morril?

But the last part is pretty damn action heavy.

• 1:32:19Speaker 02

Yeah. It's like, we're saving all the money to blow up the underground, you know, marijuana grow lab.

• 1:32:26Mark Normand?

Now, speaking of docs and movies, have you seen the Scorsese doc yet?

• 1:32:29Speaker 02

I just, you know, I leaped to the King of Comedy episode.

• 1:32:32Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 1:32:33Speaker 02

  That's my favorite movie.

• 1:32:34Sam Morril?

  That's your number one Scorsese?

• 1:32:36Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, I know it's my number one Scorsese. Goodfellas, I think, is

• 1:32:39Mark Normand?

  Sure, sure.

• 1:32:40Speaker 02

Is the one that I'd probably go back to the most.

• 1:32:42Sam Morril?

  And Taxi Driver.

• 1:32:43Speaker 02

Yeah. But King of Comedy, I remember when it came out, I literally can remember seeing it in Hicksville. It was right after like Reagan got shot, so people got really weirded out by the whole kidnapping thing.

• 1:32:55Speaker 02

But I always loved it. Like, I just was out of my mind for that movie. And it's funny to hear him talk about it because he was kind of pushed into it by De Niro. But yet, he still worked his ass off on it and went deep with it, and it's held up. Kind of like what Warren Beatty was saying, like, these movies that at the time were completely forgotten and people didn't get it. And then suddenly you're like, yeah, King of Comedy is top five.

• 1:33:18Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:33:18Speaker 02

  Scorsese.

• 1:33:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:19Sam Morril?

That's interesting, but didn't people, because he said that, it's not always true, though, because wasn't Bonnie and Clyde critically acclaimed out of the gate?

• 1:33:25Speaker 02

It was. That one was. Yeah, that was a big movie. And that kind of changed cinema at the time.

• 1:33:31Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:32Mark Normand?

But, uh, Scorsese, I didn't realize, they cover the backlash. He got a ton of backlash for that. He got a ton of backlash for Taxi Driver, a ton of backlash for The Last Temptation of Christ.

• 1:33:41Speaker 02

That was real. I mean, I remember that when that movie came out.

• 1:33:44Mark Normand?

  A guy died.

• 1:33:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:33:46Mark Normand?

They bombed a theater, a guy died.

• 1:33:47Sam Morril?

  Damn.

• 1:33:48Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, there were protests around the world.

• 1:33:50Mark Normand?

Yeah. And then they said, so what'd you do? How'd you get out of it? He goes, I made Goodfellas. So he just moved on. But he said the most backlash he got was Wolf of Wall Street. Because it was 2013, so it was like, toxic male, problematic, misogyny.

• 1:34:04Sam Morril?

By the way, that's the fucking point.

• 1:34:05Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:34:06Sam Morril?

  It's like.

• 1:34:07Mark Normand?

It was also the birth of social media and like, you know, cancel shit. So he was like, this is new. Like, I got more shit for this than The Passion of the Christ, or not Passion of the Christ, Temptation of the Christ. So you're like, oh, yeah, this is a new world you're living in now. And he didn't realize that. So that was really interesting to see.

• 1:34:23Speaker 02

Because people were like, are you celebrating this?

• 1:34:25Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:25Speaker 02

  And so clearly not.

• 1:34:26Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:34:27Speaker 02

But, yeah, that's part of it. It's like, you see why people are seduced by that lifestyle. You know, a lot of those people.

• 1:34:33Sam Morril?

It's not his fault if people don't take the right message from his show. He can't, you know, he can't hammer them, by the way, this guy's not cool, at the end.

• 1:34:39Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 1:34:40Sam Morril?

You know, Goodfellas, he ends up in witness protection, like, is it fun on the rise? Yeah, that's the point. It's supposed to be fun.

• 1:34:45Speaker 02

A bunch of guys from my high school were part of that.

• 1:34:48Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 1:34:48Speaker 02

  Jordan Belfort.

• 1:34:50Mark Normand?

  Wall Street.

• 1:34:51Speaker 02

  That, that place.

• 1:34:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:52Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. A lot of kids at our high school got in trouble for stuff like that.

• 1:34:55Mark Normand?

  Oh, cool.

• 1:34:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:34:57Mark Normand?

Yeah, but it reminded me as a comedian of like, when. People, you do the joke about the racist guy and they're like, hey, that's racist. You're like, I know, I'm making fun of the hillbilly. That's, he's the punch of the joke.

• 1:35:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:35:06Mark Normand?

So it was really cool to see Scorsese just go like, yeah, people get mad and moving on. That's what you gotta do, is you gotta keep going.

• 1:35:12Speaker 02

Focus on your, on your work, you know?

• 1:35:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:14Speaker 02

Like, is my act getting better?

• 1:35:15Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 1:35:16Speaker 02

Is this, is this moving in the right direction? Yeah, you can't, you can't worry about.

• 1:35:19Mark Normand?

Right, right. But really, really great doc and, uh, boy, the coke fueled moments and the depression. He's got like seven wives, he's got 28 kids, it's fascinating.

• 1:35:30Speaker 02

I know, I forgot how intense he.

• 1:35:33Mark Normand?

  Oh my god.

• 1:35:34Speaker 02

Cause he's so mellow now, I mean, mellow comparatively to what he was then, but just that, that he's literally gonna kill himself because he feels uninspired.

• 1:35:42Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:43Speaker 02

  To make a movie.

• 1:35:44Mark Normand?

I know, I know. And, uh, he had Goodfellas and Temptation, like, I just wanna make those two movies, that's all I wanna do. And everybody's like, why do you wanna make this shit? And then he does it and it's great, but the fact that he had asthma in Grinch Village or Little Italy and his dad took him to the movies cause it had air conditioning.

• 1:36:00Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 1:36:01Mark Normand?

That's, then he's like, this is it. So just, uh, the stars aligning, I mean, it's so cool.

• 1:36:06Speaker 02

And that he, the fact that he meets Paul Schrader, I mean, that guy's like perfect for, his writing's perfect. It's like, sometimes you just meet the right person, like Keith Richards met Mick Jagger.

• 1:36:15Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:36:16Speaker 02

People, sometimes you just, the stars align.

• 1:36:18Mark Normand?

And De Niro lived down the street on Grand Street, just in the same area, I mean, the whole thing's bananas.

• 1:36:23Speaker 02

That's like when I, when I was, you know, doing the book and laying it all out and thinking about all the stories, you do go, yeah, it's weird, like Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

• 1:36:32Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:32Speaker 02

  Connected or.

• 1:36:34Mark Normand?

  You did Anchorman.

• 1:36:35Speaker 02

  Uh, yeah, I produced Anchorman.

• 1:36:36Mark Normand?

  And Talladega Nights?

• 1:36:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:36:38Mark Normand?

  That's crazy.

• 1:36:40Speaker 02

  But just that they.

• 1:36:41Mark Normand?

But they couldn't, they wouldn't make it, right?

• 1:36:42Speaker 02

Well, they wouldn't make Anchorman for years, they just didn't get it at all and, and we would just pitch it, you know, Will and Adam, you know, they wrote one version of it that was like the movie Alive.

• 1:36:53Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 1:36:54Speaker 02

Where it was like a plane of anchor people going to an Anchorman convention. So everyone on the plane is, uh, is an anchor person.

• 1:37:02Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:03Speaker 02

Roddenberg, and he wants to fly the plane and they get in this like accident where they hit a, they crashed into a FedEx plane that's filled with, uh. Chimpanzees and Chinese throwing stars is what they're transporting in the FedEx.

• 1:37:18Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 1:37:19Speaker 02

But and then to now they're stuck on the side of a mountain in winter trying to survive. And every once in a while, they get attacked by the monkeys throwing throwing stars at them. And they wrote the funniest thing you've ever read. And no one would make that for a while and then they just started over.

• 1:37:34Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 1:37:35Speaker 02

  Another one.

• 1:37:35Sam Morril?

Well, we tapped in, it's funny you brought up the toxic masculinity because that's like what that movie is. You're tapping into a dude who's just like doesn't like under but that's why it's funny because he's like, I'm the shit.

• 1:37:45Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:45Sam Morril?

Yeah, I'm the greatest. No woman's gonna tell me I'm not great and that's and then of course you get the love story. It's it's perfect.

• 1:37:51Speaker 02

Well, they were just so ahead of their time in thinking that was a good target. And that's something that's bubbling under in this country. People like that because they loved making fun of the arrogant idiot man.

• 1:38:04Sam Morril?

  Yeah, blissfully unaware is funny.

• 1:38:06Mark Normand?

Of course, that's what Kramer is. He comes in, he thinks he's the coolest guy, but he's a doofus. He's a hipster doofus, but yeah, yeah, that movie change. I saw it once with a couple of friends in college. We didn't really get it and then we saw it again and we loved it. It was the weirdest movie, but I still quote it.

• 1:38:21Speaker 02

Yeah, it's some it's I mean, just to watch them shoot it like I like. Part of like the comedy nerd thing is I sometimes feel like I only did things to have access. Like only by making decent movies can I get to the places where I want to just watch them make the movie.

• 1:38:41Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:38:41Speaker 02

So as a kid, I would just my dream would be to watch the Marx Brothers or somebody make a movie. So Anchorman to me is like the childhood dream come true, just sitting on set, watching them shoot afternoon delight.

• 1:38:54Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:38:55Speaker 02

But I have to be good enough to get the credibility to be there.

• 1:38:59Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 1:39:00Speaker 02

  You know?

• 1:39:00Mark Normand?

It's like going to home ec for the girls.

• 1:39:03Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 1:39:04Mark Normand?

Wow, man, yeah, seeing it, seeing that's Will Ferrell really in his element. I guess all those movies, Talbot and Nights is amazing.

• 1:39:11Sam Morril?

  Locked in.

• 1:39:11Mark Normand?

Sacha Baron Cohen is great in that. Oh, man. Wow. Right, right in there. Right in the thick of it.

• 1:39:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:39:17Sam Morril?

I mean, Bridesmaids 2 was like.

• 1:39:18Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 1:39:19Sam Morril?

I mean, so many good jokes. I rewatched that recently on a flight and I was like, holy shit. I, I remember liking this a lot, but it's even funnier than I remember.

• 1:39:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:26Sam Morril?

Jon Hamm is such a piece of shit.

• 1:39:28Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:39:28Sam Morril?

Uh, Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne are so, uh, Melissa McCarthy, they're so funny, all of them. It's like, yeah, it's great.

• 1:39:35Mark Normand?

And it was one of those, like, this is a funny women movie, but it was just a funny movie. You know, and everybody had to put this women label on it. It was just good.

• 1:39:41Sam Morril?

Well, that's why I think when they're like, let's do Lady Ghostbusters. How about a fucking make an original script like that? Just make original movies.

• 1:39:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:48Speaker 02

Well, no one was thinking that it even was a, a female-driven comedy. It was just.

• 1:39:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:54Speaker 02

I saw, I saw Kristen Wiig, like, literally the first episode of SNL that she was on, and she scored so much on the first episode.

• 1:40:01Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:40:01Speaker 02

And I just thought, oh, this is, she's one of the greats.

• 1:40:04Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 1:40:05Speaker 02

And so she was in Knocked Up. She played Katherine Heigl's boss, like, one of the bosses. In that scene where they tell her to, like, tighten it up.

• 1:40:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:40:12Speaker 02

Uh, uh, with Alan Tudyk. And so we were always like, what can we do with her? And then her and Annie Mumalo, they kept talking about how they're invited to all of these weddings and they're sometimes in other cities. And, you know, they don't have enough money.

• 1:40:25Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:40:25Speaker 02

To be a part of it.

• 1:40:26Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:27Speaker 02

Because they're getting more and more expensive. And then, and they grinded for like four years on the script. And that's why it's good.

• 1:40:34Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:34Speaker 02

Because the two of them, and then later when Paul Feig came on to direct, they just did not stop trying to make it better. It wasn't tossed off. They really obsessed. And then also, uh, you know, when I think about like, when did I have a good instinct? Every once in a while, it's a very simple thing that, you know, Kristen Wiig really feels like she knows her world of comedy and which of her friends are great.

• 1:40:58Mark Normand?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:40:59Speaker 02

And I think that, uh, Paul and I just got behind that in like a big way. And so when you watch it, it feels like a troupe.

• 1:41:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:09Speaker 02

Because it's everyone that, that, uh, Kristen loves, you know? And she was just, she was just completely right when she would bring in people like, you know, uh, Melissa McCarthy.

• 1:41:18Sam Morril?

  She was great.

• 1:41:19Speaker 02

  You know?

• 1:41:19Sam Morril?

It was also funny because I, at the time, I remember, I knew, I think Rose Byrne from that show Damages on FX. I was like, oh, she's a good actress. I didn't know she could do comedy that well. She played it so straight and it's like, you need that in a movie. Sometimes, like, when it's all comedians, like, no, you need the one non-comic in there sometimes.

• 1:41:35Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:36Speaker 02

Well, we used to, yeah, we used to watch her on Damages and loved her on Damages.

• 1:41:39Sam Morril?

  That was a cool show.

• 1:41:40Mark Normand?

  I don't know.

• 1:41:40Sam Morril?

  Glenn Close?

• 1:41:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:41:42Sam Morril?

She's a badass on the show.

• 1:41:43Speaker 02

And then she played Russell Brand's ex-wife in Get Him to the Greek.

• 1:41:48Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 1:41:48Speaker 02

  That was so funny.

• 1:41:50Sam Morril?

I don't know if I saw that one.

• 1:41:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:41:52Mark Normand?

Oh, that was big. Is that Jonah Hill's story true? That he was discovered by Dustin Hoffman?

• 1:41:58Speaker 02

I think so. I think the first thing he did was I Heart Huckabee, maybe?

• 1:42:02Mark Normand?

Ah, wow. All right. Yeah, the rumor is he was in an open mic and Dustin Hoffman was there watching his daughter. I don't know. Maybe give that a go. I don't know. I heard that. That's a whisper network bullshit.

• 1:42:14Speaker 02

  It sounds familiar.

• 1:42:15Mark Normand?

Okay. And now he's, now he's great.

• 1:42:19Mark Normand?

All right. Sorry. I'm locked in on this Jonah Hill thing.

• 1:42:23Sam Morril?

Pick up Judge's new book. It's awesome.

• 1:42:24Mark Normand?

  It's true!

• 1:42:26Speaker 02

  What's it say?

• 1:42:26Sam Morril?

He says he didn't discover, but his son.

• 1:42:29Mark Normand?

  Oh, shit. Damn it.

• 1:42:30Speaker 02

  Jake did.

• 1:42:31Mark Normand?

I thought it said did. Okay, my fault. Glad we, uh, thank God for AI.

• 1:42:36Speaker 02

  Yeah. You're using the AI.

• 1:42:39Mark Normand?

Oh, he's dating his daughter. Oh, that's 2012.

• 1:42:44Sam Morril?

We're bad at the news on this show.

• 1:42:46Speaker 02

AI is very behind. It's scraping old information.

• 1:42:50Sam Morril?

Get Judge's new book, Comedy Nerd. It's awesome. It's really, you see his body of work's really, really cool. And, uh, it's cool pictures and cool stories.

• 1:42:58Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah. And you got your first time doing stand-up in there. I mean, you got so much great archival stuff.

• 1:43:06Speaker 02

You know, one thing I found in there that I was so excited to find that Rick Messina, the great manager, found was an incredible picture of Eddie Murphy doing stand-up when he's 20 years old on Long Island at Eastside.

• 1:43:16Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 1:43:16Speaker 02

Like, that's the thing, like, when you start reaching out, like, who's got cool stuff?

• 1:43:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:20Speaker 02

And there was all these pictures from Eastside, which was the great comedy club, uh, in Huntington. Where I was a dishwasher as a kid in high school.

• 1:43:27Sam Morril?

There's a theater there, too, in Huntington. That's a sick theater.

• 1:43:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, I haven't played that.

• 1:43:30Sam Morril?

  Oh, it's sick.

• 1:43:30Mark Normand?

  That's great.

• 1:43:31Sam Morril?

  It's gorgeous.

• 1:43:32Mark Normand?

Huntington's kind of like this weird hidden gem. It's got that, that strip of bars on it. I think Walt Whitman's from there.

• 1:43:37Speaker 02

That's true. I went to Walt Whitman Elementary School.

• 1:43:40Mark Normand?

Hey, I'm back! All right. There you go. Long Isla. What the, what's going on in the water at Long Island?

• 1:43:47Speaker 02

Long Island has gotten so weird. It's just the...

• 1:43:49Mark Normand?

Well, I'm not a sucker of the comedy. It's like Howard. Art Stern, Jerry Seinfeld, you, Eddie Murphy.

• 1:43:54Speaker 02

Oh, I thought you were talking about all the serial killers.

• 1:43:56Mark Normand?

Oh, Billy Joel, it's got a little everything.

• 1:43:59Speaker 02

Well, when I was a kid, I thought like, oh, maybe I could be in comedy because so many people were from Long Island.

• 1:44:03Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:04Speaker 02

And so you would see, you know, Seinfeld and people like that and just go like, oh, I feel like I, I'm kinda like that a little bit.

• 1:44:10Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:11Sam Morril?

Remember when Seinfeld gets offstage at Governors in the median, he's like, it's like another country. I'm like, holy shit, I've never related to a quote more. I've taken some fucking L's.

• 1:44:20Mark Normand?

  That's really Alabama.

• 1:44:21Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:21Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:22Sam Morril?

Yeah, it's really like Governors is like.

• 1:44:25Speaker 02

  Governors is where I started.

• 1:44:26Mark Normand?

  It can be. Wow.

• 1:44:27Speaker 02

And back then, the open mic night, a lot of times was hosted by this hilarious comedian, John Mulrooney.

• 1:44:32Sam Morril?

  I've heard of him.

• 1:44:33Speaker 02

And John, you know, it was like a Rickles-esque act, but with like a tough, you know, I don't know if he was in Brooklyn, but he had that kinda like energy. And he would really mix it up with the crowd. It would get like hilariously ugly.

• 1:44:48Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:48Speaker 02

And, but he was hosting an open mic, so then he would kill and destroy the crowd, humiliate them. Then you would get up and the crowd thought, oh, we're supposed to yell at the comedian. And then we couldn't handle it and then the crowd would take us down.

• 1:45:02Mark Normand?

We have that now with the crowd work comics. Everybody's trying to get a clip. So they go, hey, where are you from, homo? Look at this douche. And then you go up there and you're like, so Uber's weird. And they're like, boo, that's boring.

• 1:45:11Sam Morril?

Yeah, just do it on your own show.

• 1:45:13Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 1:45:14Sam Morril?

Oh, we gotta, we've been away, so we do have to mention this. Diane Keaton.

• 1:45:18Mark Normand?

  Ah, the best.

• 1:45:19Sam Morril?

  The best.

• 1:45:20Mark Normand?

All right, P. Did you work with her?

• 1:45:22Speaker 02

I, I didn't, but I, I was telling someone that I went to a party once and I got there really early and me and her were the only people there. And so I got like a great half hour.

• 1:45:31Mark Normand?

  Wow. That was sick.

• 1:45:34Speaker 02

We talked about, there's a lot, she was talking about like architecture or something, but she was so funny and kind of like what you think she would be.

• 1:45:41Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:41Speaker 02

She really was just unique and hilarious and, and very cool. And when you watch the stuff, you know, cause there's, there's all these things online of her. She's just so interesting.

• 1:45:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:53Speaker 02

Like, there's a great clip going on of her on, on the Colbert Report. And it's just so funny and charming, her with him and they're like flirting and.

• 1:46:03Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:46:04Speaker 02

You know, check it out, see what you think.

• 1:46:06Mark Normand?

Yeah, Woody Allen said, I didn't care what the critics say, I just would try to get her approval. It was all about Diane Keaton.

• 1:46:12Sam Morril?

Yeah, I mean Annie Hall, even played against Sam is so good. And then all those, what do you, Love and Death.

• 1:46:17Mark Normand?

  Yeah, Sleeper.

• 1:46:19Speaker 02

  Baby Boom.

• 1:46:21Sam Morril?

  Manhattan Murder Mystery.

• 1:46:22Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:46:23Sam Morril?

She was all, I mean, Godfather.

• 1:46:25Speaker 02

  The Godfather.

• 1:46:26Sam Morril?

I mean, that's crazy to be in Annie Hall and The Godfather.

• 1:46:29Mark Normand?

  That's a big.

• 1:46:29Sam Morril?

  The two most different.

• 1:46:30Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:46:31Speaker 02

Well, she said she couldn't really get work. Everyone else was getting work and because she was considered more of kind of an odd bird. And then they put her in The Godfather and that's what changed everything. But before that, they thought she wasn't traditional enough.

• 1:46:42Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 1:46:43Speaker 02

But that's why she was great.

• 1:46:44Sam Morril?

But also, you know, apparently the costume designer in Annie Hall like hated her because she's like, I don't want her to wear this shit. You're making me look bad. But then it becomes iconic.

• 1:46:52Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 1:46:52Speaker 02

  I never heard that.

• 1:46:53Sam Morril?

Yeah, and it's, you look at that and you're like, it's funny, I'd see a girl out in like a, like a hat like that and outfit and I'd be like, that's hot. And you're like, oh, yeah, because I probably got my first boner to Annie Hall when I was like 12. You know, because she was like weird and she was like the hot, but like kind of cool.

• 1:47:09Mark Normand?

  Quirky.

• 1:47:10Sam Morril?

Yeah, and like clever. I mean, the banter in Annie Hall is insane. They're so good together.

• 1:47:17Speaker 02

I mean, in a way, there's really no precedent for that before her.

• 1:47:20Mark Normand?

  No.

• 1:47:21Speaker 02

  That type of character.

• 1:47:23Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 1:47:23Speaker 02

You know, maybe Shirley MacLaine in something like The Apartment.

• 1:47:27Sam Morril?

Oh, that's a great one, too.

• 1:47:28Mark Normand?

Fun fact, Shirley MacLaine said she couldn't keep up with Warren Beatty's needs. Wait, no, were they sisters?

• 1:47:35Speaker 02

  It's a sister.

• 1:47:36Mark Normand?

Oh, I'm sorry. I'm thinking of, uh.

• 1:47:38Speaker 02

Mark's really, he's really roughing it on the news this episode.

• 1:47:41Mark Normand?

Joan Collins? Who did he date?

• 1:47:43Speaker 02

  I think Joan Collins.

• 1:47:44Mark Normand?

  All right, that's the one.

• 1:47:45Sam Morril?

  He dated Diane Keaton, too.

• 1:47:46Mark Normand?

  Is that right?

• 1:47:47Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:48Mark Normand?

  Wow, good for her.

• 1:47:49Speaker 02

I went to go see Diane Keaton shoot something with Warren Beatty, it was this movie called Town and Country. And it was, it just, everything was going wrong. And it was, you know, it was supposed to be like a 45, 50 day shoot. It's like day 95.

• 1:48:03Sam Morril?

  Oh, shit.

• 1:48:03Speaker 02

Everyone's getting crazy. Gary Shandling was in it and he's like, you want to come? And so I go to this house and they're shooting in this like small room in a house. And they're like, oh, go by the monitor. And you know when like you're in a space and like they're working and you shouldn't be watching at their monitor. And so I'm really like uncomfortable and Warren Beatty's doing the scene with Diane Keaton. And then, you know, they yell cut and I like try to slip out of the room. And as I'm like exiting the room, Warren Beatty just goes, that bad?

• 1:48:32Sam Morril?

He said, you won't know for 10 years, so.

• 1:48:35Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 1:48:36Sam Morril?

  Damn, dude.

• 1:48:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:38Speaker 02

There it is, Town and Country.

• 1:48:39Mark Normand?

  Warren Beatty, what a hunk.

• 1:48:41Sam Morril?

Yeah, so was he a cool guy, Warren?

• 1:48:43Speaker 02

So nice, yeah, he was very nice. And I remember he did the very last episode of The Larry Sanders Show.

• 1:48:48Sam Morril?

  That's right.

• 1:48:49Speaker 02

And the joke was that Larry bumps into him in a parking lot and asks him if he'll be a guest on the very, like, the final episode of The Larry Sanders Show. And the joke is that he's pitching it, like, can you do it? It really would mean a lot to me. It's a big deal. We've been on for so long and this is the last one and your career means so much to me. And that Warren Beatty just goes, "No." And then just drives away. And so, like, it's all set up. Everyone thinks he's gonna be late. He's not late.

• 1:49:18Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:49:19Speaker 02

Everyone thinks he's gonna want a zillion takes. He doesn't. But then he just pulls me aside and he goes, "Explain this joke to me."

• 1:49:25Sam Morril?

  Hmm.

• 1:49:26Speaker 02

"Why is this funny?" And I go, "I don't know. You're Warren Beatty and, like, you're so much better than this dumb talk show. And why would this guy ever think that you would do it?"

• 1:49:37Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 1:49:37Speaker 02

And then you're just like, "Yeah, no, I'm not doing this." And he's like, "Okay, I get it."

• 1:49:42Sam Morril?

But also, like, he, but he's doing it. So that's funny. That's a good meta thing about it was like, but he is fucking Warren Beatty and he is doing it. I don't know. I get it, but it is funny that you're like, yeah, he should like Larry Sanders in that world, I think. I don't know. Yeah, no, it's also cool to see.

• 1:49:59Speaker 02

  Oh, there it is.

• 1:49:59Sam Morril?

I feel like he never really did a comedy, really.

• 1:50:01Mark Normand?

  He did Bullworth.

• 1:50:02Sam Morril?

  Oh, Bullworth.

• 1:50:02Speaker 02

Yeah, Bullworth. And, you know, Heaven Can Wait.

• 1:50:05Sam Morril?

  No.

• 1:50:05Speaker 02

Heaven Can Wait is one of the great comedies. And then, you know, Ishtar, which doesn't totally work, but the first half is pretty funny.

• 1:50:13Sam Morril?

  Is it?

• 1:50:13Speaker 02

  There is some funny stuff.

• 1:50:14Sam Morril?

Didn't that movie get Elaine May, like, kinda like, not give her a shot for a while?

• 1:50:17Speaker 02

I guess it was expensive and they shot it in the desert and...

• 1:50:21Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 1:50:22Speaker 02

But it definitely has way more great stuff than you would think in the first half.

• 1:50:26Mark Normand?

But that was the go-to punchline for a while.

• 1:50:28Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:50:29Mark Normand?

  That and Shampoo.

• 1:50:30Speaker 02

Yeah. And Shampoo, kind of a dark comedy.

• 1:50:33Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:50:34Sam Morril?

Yeah, it's not great. I know people love it. I...

• 1:50:38Speaker 02

Many things are of their moment.

• 1:50:39Sam Morril?

  Yeah, I think you're right. I think you're right.

• 1:50:41Speaker 02

If you grew up during the Nixon administration, you would really...

• 1:50:45Sam Morril?

McCabe and Miss Miller holds up. That's incredible.

• 1:50:48Mark Normand?

All right, well, get the book, folks.

• 1:50:49Speaker 02

  Get the book.

• 1:50:50Mark Normand?

  Get the comedy nerd book.

• 1:50:52Sam Morril?

R.I.P. I know we're late on it because we were in Europe, but, uh, R.I.P. Diane Keaton, the best. We loved her.

• 1:50:58Mark Normand?

All right. And much like an Appetite Movie, this is going long.

• 1:51:01Speaker 02

I'm gonna show you how it's done right now. We're gonna linger.

• 1:51:04Mark Normand?

  Let me call Paul Thomas.

• 1:51:05Sam Morril?

  Great to see you, dude.

• 1:51:06Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:07Speaker 02

  See you, guys.

• 1:51:07Mark Normand?

Good stuff. Thanks for coming in. Comedy.

  Nice.

• 1:51:33Mark Normand?

And, boy, oh, boy. Spirit Mountain Casino, making a cash grab there.

• 1:51:38Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:39Mark Normand?

Oregon, I guess. New Brunswick, back at the Stress Factory. San Antonio, Tulsa, and Arizona, and Indianapolis, Buffalo. You, the list goes on. Go to my website, it's all there. What do you got, Fatty?

• 1:51:54Sam Morril?

I got, I'm at Wise Guys, November 14th through 16th. My second time at the club this year. I love that club. And I'm in Reno, Nevada, at the Atlantis Casino. Two shows, November 29th. I'm not there for money. I'm excited to be in Reno Thanksgiving weekend.

• 1:52:08Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 1:52:10Sam Morril?

And then, December 4th, Carnegie Hall. I'm gonna add a bunch.

• 1:52:13Mark Normand?

  Whoa.

• 1:52:13Sam Morril?

Yeah, I'll see you there. I'm gonna add a bunch more stuff early next year. I gotta get on it. I'm gonna figure that out. But, yeah, a lot of cities this year.

• 1:52:19Speaker 02

I saw him at Carnegie Hall.

• 1:52:21Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's right.

• 1:52:21Speaker 02

  Jimmy Carr.

• 1:52:22Mark Normand?

  Jimmy Carr show.

• 1:52:23Sam Morril?

  I should've gone to that.

• 1:52:24Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:52:24Sam Morril?

  I fucking bailed.

• 1:52:25Mark Normand?

Who was there, it was a fun time. Um, alright, well, thanks, gang.

• 1:52:30Sam Morril?

  Thank you.

• 1:52:30Mark Normand?

You got any dates? You be on the road?

• 1:52:32Speaker 02

When's this run? This runs November 16th? I have no dates.

• 1:52:36Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 1:52:38Speaker 02

  Mel Brooks Stock in January.

• 1:52:39Mark Normand?
