• 0:06Mark Normand?

  Hey!

• 0:07Sam Morril?

  The Hotel.

• 0:08Mark Normand?

Look at that! What are the odds?

• 0:09Sam Morril?

  Hey.

• 0:10Mark Normand?

They got a cool bar in the lobby.

• 0:11Sam Morril?

  I heard it's sick.

• 0:12Mark Normand?

  They don't play music, though.

• 0:13Sam Morril?

Did I just say sick twice?

• 0:14Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 0:15Sam Morril?

Who the fuck do I think I am?

• 0:16Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 0:17Sam Morril?

I heard it's dope, bro. Fucking dweeb. Ugh. Sorry.

• 0:21Mark Normand?

Alright, I'm hanging out with a... Bieber? I don't know. I don't know any cool kids.

• 0:26Sam Morril?

No, my asshole's fine. Well, you're the one saying it.

• 0:30Mark Normand?

Who's the young kid? Who's cool now?

• 0:33Sam Morril?

  Who's cool?

• 0:33Mark Normand?

Like, who's the cool kid reference?

• 0:34Sam Morril?

  Chalamet?

• 0:36Mark Normand?

I don't know if he's even that young.

• 0:36Speaker 02

  He's even 30.

• 0:38Mark Normand?

  I'm talking like-

• 0:38Speaker 02

  He's about 30.

• 0:39Mark Normand?

  19-year-old cool dude.

• 0:41Sam Morril?

We're too old to even know who's cool.

• 0:42Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 0:43Mark Normand?

Yeah, I don't know. Let me call Kevin Spacey.

• 0:47Sam Morril?

Who's the cool kid? Oh no, Macaulay Culkin? That kid's cool.

• 0:52Mark Normand?

So then, flew to Chicago, did three at the Den, drank all the Den is amazing, by the way.

• 0:56Sam Morril?

  Den is sick.

• 0:57Mark Normand?

  Unbelievable.

• 0:58Sam Morril?

  Den is sick, dude.

• 0:58Mark Normand?

  One of the great...

• 1:01Mark Normand?

  Hella cool!

• 1:02Sam Morril?

Hella cool. No, I taped a special there for a reason. It's great.

• 1:04Mark Normand?

Yeah, I walked in, I was like, "This is a perfect room."

• 1:06Sam Morril?

  You're repping it.

• 1:07Mark Normand?

That's right. They gave me free shit. You give me anything free, I'll wear it.

• 1:10Sam Morril?

I got a turquoise blue one I wear all the time, still.

• 1:13Mark Normand?

  Great fit, great fluff.

• 1:14Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:15Mark Normand?

Then, went to bed, you know, drank all night.

• 1:18Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:19Mark Normand?

Santino texts me, "Let's get a drink in Chicago. It's St. Patty's Day. I got a fucking ginger."

• 1:25Sam Morril?

And he's the mayor of Chicago.

• 1:26Mark Normand?

He's the mayor! And he's a luck of the Irish Mick Paddio. So we hit the town, and then we did Adam Ray's thing, and then we drank there, then we went to an after-party, and drank there.

• 1:36Sam Morril?

  He always is an after-party.

• 1:38Mark Normand?

Always. It was a hell of a night.

• 1:40Sam Morril?

Any big names show up for Ray?

• 1:41Mark Normand?

  Chevy Chase showed up.

• 1:42Sam Morril?

  That's the big one.

• 1:43Mark Normand?

And then it was just me and Santino. So not really.

• 1:45Sam Morril?

  That's pretty good.

• 1:46Mark Normand?

But, I don't know if I can say much, because I don't know when it comes out, but Jeremiah did Baron Trump.

• 1:51Sam Morril?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:51Mark Normand?

And it was huge. He came out on a bird scooter. I mean, it was gold. Slicked back hair.

• 1:56Sam Morril?

And I did theirs. He came out in a skateboard as you.

• 2:00Sam Morril?

But, yeah, he asked me to do one in Dallas, but it was after like a 10-day road stretch, and I was like, "Dude, I'm cooked."

• 2:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 2:06Sam Morril?

These long bus runs, by the end, you're just... There's just nothing left.

• 2:10Speaker 02

You guys, we have a special guest in the studio.

• 2:13Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 2:14Sam Morril?

Is there a camera on our special guest?

• 2:15Speaker 02

Yes, sir. Hello, can you hear me?

• 2:17Mark Normand?

  Hey!

• 2:18Speaker 02

  Look at this!

• 2:20Mark Normand?

It's Triumph the Insult Comic Dog!

• 2:21Speaker 02

  Yes, isn't that exciting, everyone?

• 2:24Mark Normand?

Hey, what's... Now, what accent is that?

• 2:26Speaker 02

  Who cares?

• 2:28Speaker 03

  Seriously.

• 2:29Mark Normand?

  Sounds almost like Eastern Bloc.

• 2:30Speaker 03

Been doing this shit for thirty years.

• 2:31Mark Normand?

  Alright.

• 2:32Speaker 03

I know, I'm here, I'm here to, you know, because the Jew up my ass isn't quite enough for you guys.

• 2:39Mark Normand?

  Tell it to Elon.

• 2:40Speaker 03

He's here to plug a charity event, and as if that should be enough, but no, no. We need the dog, we need the thirty-year-old act from Conan.

• 2:49Mark Normand?

  We love the act.

• 2:50Speaker 03

  What?

• 2:51Mark Normand?

We love the dog, what was the benefit?

• 2:52Speaker 03

We love you, we love you, so this is, I'm like the bartender. We're trying to make, you know, the network called in, and they said they want the show to be more like Andy Cohen's.

• 3:03Mark Normand?

  Ha ha ha.

• 3:04Speaker 03

So I'm like the bartender, so the show is just like a Bravo show, only gayer now.

• 3:10Mark Normand?

Well, I'll do some Hair of the Dog.

• 3:12Speaker 03

Hair of the Dog, what did it, what did it be? How about, how about Bodega Cat?

• 3:16Mark Normand?

  Yeah!

• 3:16Speaker 03

I love it. See, I got the plug in and everything, yes.

• 3:20Mark Normand?

Nice to see a dog and a cat getting along.

• 3:22Speaker 03

Always, you know, but I'll tell you what, though. I love cats, but never let a cat give you a handjob.

• 3:28Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 3:28Speaker 03

  Yeah, trust me, trust me.

• 3:31Mark Normand?

  What about those beans?

• 3:32Speaker 03

Not a good idea. Mark, you, no, but you guys are great. You guys are great. You guys are great, now I'm getting to the prepared jokes, but you guys are great.

• 3:41Mark Normand?

  Oh, you prepared something.

• 3:42Speaker 03

Two great comedians who definitely know which strip club has the best brunch. Is that a joke? It's technically a joke, okay?

• 3:51Mark Normand?

  I like it.

• 3:52Speaker 03

Here we go, now, Sam, I don't know, I'm a little worried about Sam. Are you angry at me, or is that just your eyebrows, how they always look?

• 4:00Mark Normand?

You've already gone through two cigars, what are you, Bill Clinton?

• 4:03Speaker 03

Please don't start any fires with your mind until I've left. I love Sam, no, seriously, Sam, where's the fucking other eyebrow? I got two more eyebrow jokes.

• 4:14Mark Normand?

  Bring it on.

• 4:15Speaker 03

  Holy shit, where are they?

• 4:16Mark Normand?

You're like Kanye with these Jewish thinkers.

• 4:19Speaker 03

I know, I'm exactly like Kanye, except, oh shit. Here's the, oh, yes. Yeah.

• 4:25Mark Normand?

I can see why Conan was canceled.

• 4:27Speaker 03

We finished about the eyebrows, then a smooth transition. Ah, Sam, so, seriously, Sam, is it true that when you die, your eyebrows will float away and find the next worthy host? That was worth the wait, wasn't that worth the wait, ladies and gentlemen?

• 4:41Mark Normand?

  Slow brow.

• 4:42Speaker 03

I love this show, you guys are like if Joe Rogan traded all his money, fame, and following for a Jew fro.

• 4:52Speaker 03

I'm just glad I could be here to make the episode somehow even more Jewish. Please. Yes, uh, you're so a little ad now for your sponsor, the Wailing Walmart.

• 5:03Speaker 03

Oh my God, who wrote that one? Jesus Christ. Is there a greeter? Is there a greeter? I thought Sarah Sherman was gonna be on. I had six. She bailed on us. You hit her with a joke anyway. Yeah, Sherman. You know, Sarah's like, I love her because she's like an innovator, you know, she's, she's the first sketch comedian who wears her costume offstage. You see? That's good. I like it. Usually she looks, she's a sketch comedian who looks like she's not in a sketch when she's in a sketch. Right. When she's not in a sketch, she, okay, you get the idea. You guys good? Is it weird? Let me ask you, is it weird interviewing a ridiculous puppet who isn't like, uh, the mayor? You see? Little political joke there.

• 5:49Speaker 03

I like it. I got a few left over from my appearance on Rosanna Scotto. Would you like to hear? Oh yeah, let's do it. Who's that? Oh, Rosanna. I was on Good Day New York last week. These are great. Rosanna, I just, which one of you wants to play Rosanna? I'll be Rosanna. Okay. Oh, Rosanna, what the fuck is with your eyebrows?

• 6:10Speaker 03

  No, that's a pre-written one, just a coincidence.

• 6:14Speaker 03

Seriously, Rosanna, it's so great to be on a new show on Fox that isn't just demanding that we pardon John Wilkes Booth.

• 6:23Speaker 03

Rosanna, Rosanna, you're so much better. Uh, I love you, uh, Rosanna. You're way better than Live with Kelly and Mark, your show. Do you know how bad a show has to be for Ryan Seacrest to walk away from it? Good point. Kill Don Fox.

• 6:43Speaker 03

No, but now, seriously, let me plug Night of Too Many Stars, because that's what the Jew is here for. It's going to be filled with amazing celebrities. Absolutely amazing.

• 6:52Mark Normand?

  Who's gonna be there?

• 6:53Speaker 03

Oh my god, well, it's gonna be like the Oscars, but nobody has to pretend that they watched Emilia Perez.

• 7:01Speaker 03

I've got Jon Stewart, Amy Schumer, Adam Sandler, Suzy Esman, Alex Edelman, Sam Morril.

• 7:08Sam Morril?

Wow, this is really falling off.

• 7:10Speaker 03

Sarah Sherman, Sarah Sherman, and then, for the sake of diversity, Jim Gaffigan. Lot of Jews, lot of Jews. It's a little awkward, you know, because I have a lot of Jews.

• 7:20Mark Normand?

  Chris Rock?

• 7:21Speaker 03

We're talking about this show, and, you know, Sam is going to be on it. Mark, I would have loved to have you on it.

• 7:29Mark Normand?

  Please.

• 7:30Speaker 03

I would have done anything to have you on it, but you're not good. I kid, I kid, he's great. No, no, seriously, Mark, if being, if it was in my hands, you know, it's out of my hands. I can't make you funny. If I could, in a second, I'd have you on the show.

• 7:48Mark Normand?

  Thank you.

• 7:48Sam Morril?

Well, luckily, you have a great comic like Drew Barrymore on, so that'll...

• 7:52Speaker 03

Ouch. No, she's, she's great. We're on Hollywood Squares together. We're on Hollywood Squares together. I love working with Drew, and I love to see her on Hollywood Squares, because it means she's not shooting Fever Pitch 2.

• 8:08Speaker 03

Alright, you've been a great crowd.

• 8:10Mark Normand?

  Yeah!

• 8:11Speaker 03

  Hope fun!

• 8:13Mark Normand?

  Killed it!

• 8:15Sam Morril?

  That was awesome.

• 8:15Mark Normand?

Oh, heads up! Jesus Christ, WNBA over here, man!

• 8:21Sam Morril?

  That was killer.

• 8:22Mark Normand?

Hey, well done, you still got it, Smigel. So, Night of Too Many Stars.

• 8:28Speaker 03

  How's it going, everybody?

• 8:29Mark Normand?

That's gonna be awesome, at the Beacon.

• 8:31Sam Morril?

  I'm pumped, dude.

• 8:32Mark Normand?

One of the best rooms in the city.

• 8:33Sam Morril?

I have a great memory from when I did it last time, and I, I, I think I closed on a dead baby joke, which was probably not the best choice.

• 8:39Speaker 03

  No, it was hilarious.

• 8:40Sam Morril?

Uh, but I got off, and I remember seeing a look of horror on, uh, Steve Buscemi's face. And then I looked over and saw a look of horror on Harvey Keitel's face.

• 8:48Speaker 03

Harvey, you managed to horrify Harvey Keitel.

• 8:50Sam Morril?

  Yeah! Bad Lieutenant?

• 8:53Mark Normand?

  Yeah!

• 8:53Sam Morril?

And then I turned to my left, and I just saw, uh, Paul Rudd, and he was like...

• 8:56Mark Normand?

  Hell yeah.

• 8:57Sam Morril?

I was like, ah, saved by Rudd.

• 8:58Mark Normand?

For the record, that might have just been Buscemi's face.

• 9:00Sam Morril?

  It might have, yeah.

• 9:03Speaker 04

  His default face.

• 9:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 9:05Speaker 04

  Appears to be.

• 9:06Sam Morril?

No, it's a huge event and it's for a great cause. Uh, so that's really cool. I don't know.

• 9:10Mark Normand?

  Was it autism?

• 9:11Speaker 04

  Really?

• 9:12Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 9:13Speaker 04

No, it's, it's for autism schools.

• 9:15Mark Normand?

Oh, well, thank you for the money.

• 9:17Speaker 04

Autism School Services Programs and it's, uh, you know, my wife and I started it like 25 years ago when everybody was just focusing on curing autism and we couldn't get our kid into any kind of school that was, uh, that was helping him because there was such a shortage of schools. And then we realized like, Jesus, people who don't have dog puppets have it even harder.

• 9:42Speaker 04

I had, I knew everybody in comedy and I figured, ah, Jesus, I'd be an asshole if I didn't do this.

• 9:48Sam Morril?

  Here, here. What a cool.

• 9:49Speaker 04

And then John, so we did one at Roseland.

• 9:52Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 9:53Speaker 04

And I didn't know John very well. I had like Adam and Conan were my friends who were like kind of anchoring it. And I had a lot of SNL people on it, but John was on it too. And John asked me a million questions. He just walked over to me at one point, just wanted to, he was so curious what, what it was like, what it was like for parents. Uh, and at one point I was telling him, yeah, we're thinking of maybe trying to start a school with other parents, try to raise money. He said, I'll, I'll just, just let me know. I'll host an event for you. And he did, and we were able to start a school. It ended up not being a great place for my son, but it helped a lot of people. And then John

• 10:35Speaker 04

just went to Comedy Central where he was doing the Daily Show and said, I want to have this on Comedy Central.

• 10:41Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 10:42Speaker 04

And we, then it became a regular thing.

• 10:44Mark Normand?

  Hell yeah.

• 10:45Speaker 04

  Comedy Central went to shit.

• 10:46Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 10:47Speaker 04

And so now we just do it at the Beacon Live.

• 10:50Mark Normand?

  Hell yeah. Even better.

• 10:51Speaker 04

Even better because people get to do stand up and not have to worry about burning their act.

• 10:56Sam Morril?

Yeah, it was fun, man. It was fun last time. And, uh, yeah, it's awesome you do it.

• 11:01Mark Normand?

  Is it?

• 11:01Speaker 04

  What are we looking at?

• 11:02Mark Normand?

Is it a telethon? Can you call in like Jerry Lewis?

• 11:04Speaker 04

No, the TV ones, we did have a phone in thing and we would give away weird prizes like a Tina Fey calendar where she, she posed in, I can't even remember, we superimposed her body over bizarre things and then like a bikini calendar and then one year we actually did this for people who donated over the phone a hundred dollars or more. We gave them a DVD of the first episode of Game of Thrones with color commentary by JB Smoove and Tracy Morgan.

• 11:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, that's amazing.

• 11:38Sam Morril?

  That is amazing.

• 11:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 11:39Mark Normand?

  Great idea.

• 11:39Speaker 04

Ever since then, I've been wanting them to just do that as a TV show.

• 11:42Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 11:43Speaker 04

Just their own version of Mystery Science Theater.

• 11:45Mark Normand?

Do you have to pay them to watch it? Cause they gotta do that, right? You actually have to do it.

• 11:50Speaker 04

The creators of Game of Thrones donated the rights to like, is that what you mean?

• 11:55Mark Normand?

No, I mean like, do you have to pay Tracy Morgan like, hey, can you sit here and watch this for an hour?

• 11:59Speaker 04

Oh, no, he was, he's like my old SNL buddy.

• 12:01Mark Normand?

  He did it for free?

• 12:02Speaker 04

Of, of course he did. I was about to imitate him, but he threw up at the NICU. I hope he's doing great.

• 12:09Mark Normand?

He had food poisoning, he's fine.

• 12:10Speaker 04

  Is that right?

• 12:11Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 12:11Speaker 04

  Just food poisoning?

• 12:13Mark Normand?

That's what they said on the news.

• 12:14Speaker 04

  Oh, good. Oh, okay.

• 12:15Mark Normand?

  He'll be fine.

• 12:17Speaker 04

Cause I don't know, I heard he had like a kidney transplant.

• 12:20Mark Normand?

  No, he was eating pussy.

• 12:23Sam Morril?

  What a.

• 12:23Speaker 04

He's gonna do 10 minutes on it now.

• 12:25Mark Normand?

Of course, he's gonna sell out from that.

• 12:27Speaker 04

Yeah, he's, he's at Conan's Mark Twain Award Sunday night.

• 12:30Mark Normand?

  Is he?

• 12:31Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 12:31Mark Normand?

Oh, beautiful. Is he receiving or just doing a?

• 12:35Speaker 04

He's gonna be stealing it from Conan.

• 12:37Mark Normand?

Oh, Conan's doing it, hell yeah.

• 12:38Speaker 04

  Conan's getting the award, yeah.

• 12:39Mark Normand?

  It's about time.

• 12:41Sam Morril?

Yeah, he, he crushed the Oscars.

• 12:43Mark Normand?

  Killed it.

• 12:44Speaker 04

No, it's really good timing. Cause anybody, if anybody had any doubt of how great he was.

• 12:49Mark Normand?

Would, did you write on that?

• 12:50Speaker 04

Just fucking, I had one idea that I called in.

• 12:53Mark Normand?

  Hell yeah.

• 12:55Speaker 04

It was, it was the section where.

• 12:58Mark Normand?

  Lithgow?

• 12:59Speaker 04

  No.

• 12:59Mark Normand?

  The dune worm?

• 13:00Speaker 04

  No.

• 13:01Mark Normand?

Ah, that felt like a you.

• 13:02Speaker 04

It felt like a me. It could have been, but no, uh. So I had heard that they were struggling with how to handle the LA fires, you know? And there was a lot of talk going back to January, we gotta, gotta address it. So I suggested you have firemen come on and then they tell incredibly rude Golden Globes style jokes.

• 13:25Sam Morril?

That's good. Yeah, that was great.

• 13:26Speaker 04

That are too offensive for Conan to tell.

• 13:28Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 13:29Speaker 04

And that they're protected because they're heroes.

• 13:32Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 13:33Speaker 04

But I didn't write the jokes, but, but yeah, that was the idea.

• 13:36Sam Morril?

  It's a good idea.

• 13:37Mark Normand?

Isn't it crazy? LA fires, billions of dollars of damage, people lost their homes. It's our, we've already moved on. We're like on to the next thing. No one cares anymore.

• 13:44Sam Morril?

  Yeah, we don't live there.

• 13:45Mark Normand?

Well, I mean, I'm just saying the country feels like it's like, oh, we've already had three fires since then.

• 13:49Speaker 04

The country's attention span is just laughable in general.

• 13:52Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 13:53Speaker 04

If they had any attention span, global warming would be a huge thing on everybody's mind.

• 13:59Mark Normand?

  Yeah, I guess so.

• 14:00Speaker 04

I mean, think about like a couple of summers ago, remember when New York just fucking had the orange sky in the.

• 14:07Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 14:08Sam Morril?

I was at a, I was out of town for all those days.

• 14:11Speaker 04

  Oh, you were?

• 14:11Sam Morril?

Whenever something bad happens in New York and I'm out here, I feel like a traitor.

• 14:14Speaker 04

Those Canadian wildfires that spread so far that the sky was orange.

• 14:19Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 14:19Speaker 04

And people were wearing masks again.

• 14:21Sam Morril?

Well, we raised, that's why we brought the tariffs, because they fucking.

• 14:23Speaker 04

  I thought, oh, finally.

• 14:25Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 14:26Speaker 04

Finally, people are gonna give a shit about this because now it's affecting the East Coast.

• 14:30Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 14:30Speaker 04

  But no.

• 14:31Mark Normand?

Well, you know, who hasn't piped up is Thunberg. She hasn't said a peep about the fires.

• 14:36Speaker 04

  She's moved on.

• 14:37Mark Normand?

What? That was her whole thing was the environment. She would take a tugboat.

• 14:40Sam Morril?

  You go with the money.

• 14:41Speaker 04

The environment is so 2020. No, I don't know. I don't know what to say. It's like, I thought that would do it. And then they thought maybe the LA wildfires would do it.

• 14:50Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 14:50Speaker 04

But they're so brilliant at switching, changing the subject. They made it all about the depleted. Fire department and the depleted.

• 14:59Sam Morril?

And one of them was a lesbian, goddammit.

• 15:01Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 15:01Speaker 04

All these dumb side issues that, you know, just distract you from what's really going on in the world.

• 15:09Sam Morril?

This unavoidable fire happens and then everyone's like, the fire chief's a lesbian?

• 15:13Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:14Sam Morril?

  This is crazy.

• 15:15Speaker 04

  No wonder.

• 15:17Mark Normand?

She don't know how to handle a hose.

• 15:18Speaker 04

Global warming, here's the statistic. She's a lesbian.

• 15:21Sam Morril?

Now, there could have been things I'm sure done better, but yeah, it is hilarious that that's what like they, they, you find shit to get outraged about, right?

• 15:28Speaker 04

Yeah, but your point, you're right. There, there definitely things could have been done better, but what always drives me crazy is that they always turned it into an either or. Can't be both.

• 15:37Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 15:38Speaker 04

God forbid, it's like both mental health and gun control. It's always like, it's not the guns, it's our mental health.

• 15:45Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 15:46Speaker 04

We gotta get to the source, like.

• 15:48Sam Morril?

By the way, how many people do you think are mentally, how many people do you think in this country are mentally ill?

• 15:52Speaker 04

  Healthy?

• 15:53Mark Normand?

  It's gotta be 78%.

• 15:56Speaker 04

  78% unhealthy or unhealthy?

• 15:57Mark Normand?

  Unhealthy.

• 15:58Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 15:59Mark Normand?

I mean, if we're really getting down to it.

• 16:01Speaker 04

But abusing, abusing a gun unhealthy, that's probably a.

• 16:05Mark Normand?

  Yeah, that's a.

• 16:06Speaker 04

  75%.

• 16:07Mark Normand?

  Spectrum.

• 16:10Mark Normand?

But you're right, it's nuanced. Nuance is the new N word. No one wants to, it's all good or bad, black or white.

• 16:16Sam Morril?

  And I love saying it.

• 16:19Mark Normand?

  Exactly.

• 16:19Sam Morril?

You said you had a great Pacino story before we were on air.

• 16:22Speaker 04

Oh, I got a million stories.

• 16:27Sam Morril?

  You've written on everything.

• 16:28Speaker 04

SNL, la di bla, I'm very old, very, very old and accomplished.

• 16:34Sam Morril?

  What happened with Pacino?

• 16:35Speaker 04

Well, Pacino, I got to do, uh, if you Google Dunkachino.

• 16:39Sam Morril?

  That was you?

• 16:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 16:40Mark Normand?

  Dunkachino?

• 16:41Speaker 04

People don't even know it's from Jack and Jim.

• 16:43Sam Morril?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 16:44Speaker 04

It's from a movie. There are a lot of people who think that Al Pacino literally did a commercial for Dunkachino. The whole movie was-

• 16:53Speaker 02

  You've never seen this?

• 16:53Mark Normand?

No, I've stayed away from Jack and Jill. No offense.

• 16:56Speaker 04

  Well, I know, I understand.

• 16:58Mark Normand?

It did great in the box office.

• 16:59Speaker 05

Al Pacino! It's not Al anymore, it's Dunk! Dunkachino? Don't mind if I do! What's my name? Dunkachino! It's a whole new game! Dunkachino!

• 17:11Mark Normand?

  Holy shit!

• 17:12Speaker 05

You aren't creamy goodness, I'm your friend! Say hello to my chocolate grin! Attic up, who are lucky like? This fool's trial is out of sight! They put me back in with hazelnut two caramel swirl, I know it was you!

• 17:27Mark Normand?

  Oh wow!

• 17:29Speaker 02

  Good dance!

• 17:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 17:44Speaker 03

And boom, there you have it. It's actually thirty-two seconds, so I could lose two seconds, maybe you-

• 17:48Mark Normand?

How, how did you pitch this to Al Pacino?

• 17:51Speaker 04

Well, there's a whole movie about, that's the thing, it's not a real commercial, it's a whole movie about Adam Sandler's in the ad, he runs an ad agency and I think to save his job, he needs to make a big splash, so he, he had, at the same time, he has a sister also played by Adam Sandler.

• 18:10Mark Normand?

  Uh-huh.

• 18:11Speaker 05

  Don't give it away!

• 18:12Speaker 04

Who wants to, well, uh, two thousand and nine, I think pretty much everyone's seen this movie.

• 18:19Mark Normand?

  Spoiler alert.

• 18:20Speaker 04

No, so, uh, he brings his pain in the ass sister to a Laker game and Al Pacino, because he hears that Al Pacino's gonna be there and then Al Pacino's way more interested in his sister.

• 18:33Mark Normand?

  Ah!

• 18:34Speaker 04

  And, and then there's-

• 18:35Mark Normand?

  Comedy two.

• 18:36Speaker 04

But eventually, he does the Dunkachino commercial and then it was just put online and, uh, and everybody, a lot of people thought it was just a real commercial. And, but yes, my job on that movie, I didn't write the movie, but I I came in to do a rewrite that was mostly just about Al Pacino's part and then I he asked me to work on the set. Whenever Al Pacino was on set. Oh, hell yeah. So I got to like be, you know, I don't want to use the term babysitter because he's not a baby. He's a brilliant. Handler. I don't know what I was. I was Al Pacino's.

• 19:13Sam Morril?

He's not a baby, but he's still having babies, which is weird.

• 19:15Speaker 04

  Yeah, that's true.

• 19:18Speaker 04

But I would get calls in the middle of the night, Robert. It's Al. I had a thought about the movie. What if my guy dreams of being Don Quixote? What if Al is the part that he's never gotten to play is Don Quixote? We'll talk about it tomorrow.

• 19:44Sam Morril?

I love that he's approaching it like it's dog day or something.

• 19:47Speaker 04

Right. Yeah, right. No, but he, well, he was like going for the comedy of it, like that Al Pacino has this dream of playing Don Quixote.

• 19:54Sam Morril?

Has he ever done a comedy?

• 19:56Speaker 04

We actually put that in the movie. It was actually, it turned out to be a funny idea and he was like the most fun actor I've ever worked with. Whoa. You would think that this would be like total slumming for him. Yeah. I'm just doing it for the money, whatever this shit is, but no, he like, he made Adam and me and another actor, I can't remember who, he would make Adam do like script sessions with him where we're going to read the part and then we're going to improvise and we're going to learn about the character. And, and we would go to his house and they would go through the lines and then he would like riff. And then he would lecture us afterward. You see what happened there? You see what happened? We had, I'm sorry for the, you know, let's get Bill Hader in here. The rest of this.

• 20:42Speaker 04

We couldn't get him. No, but he, it was hysterical how, how into it he was and how much fun he was and enthusiastic he was about doing this movie. And then at one point we had dinner with him and he said, it doesn't matter what the movie is. You always approach a movie as if you have a chance to win an Oscar. I don't know about Jack and Jill.

• 21:04Mark Normand?

But yeah, that's that Duncan Chino, that was unreal. I can't believe you did that. What a cool dude.

• 21:08Speaker 04

I know. It's the guy. It was like a dream to like just jam every catchphrase.

• 21:12Mark Normand?

Yes. That's worth the ticket price right there at the movie theater.

• 21:17Speaker 04

Yeah. It's definitely like a really big thing on on YouTube. That's for sure.

• 21:22Mark Normand?

Wow. That's why you want to be a writer. So you just you can make shit like this.

• 21:26Speaker 04

It it he's one of the most fun people I've ever gotten to work with.

• 21:29Sam Morril?

Who else was like on that level of fun? Who who surprised you?

• 21:32Speaker 04

Well, that surprised me. I mean, Larry David, getting to be on Curb was

• 21:37Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 21:38Speaker 04

one of the most exciting things I've ever done.

• 21:40Mark Normand?

  My dream.

• 21:41Speaker 04

It didn't surprise me. It was just like better than I ever dreamed it would be.

• 21:45Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 21:46Speaker 04

Because they've let you improvise and it was an insane part they gave me where I played this mechanic. I played a mechanic who, oh, there he is.

• 21:56Mark Normand?

That was on the baseball team in Central Park.

• 21:58Speaker 04

Yes, it was like I I was a mechanic who ran, who sponsored the softball team and I took it way too seriously. And like literally I get to the set and the director Larry Charles is like, can you give a pregame speech before the scene starts?

• 22:14Mark Normand?

  As Amy Schumer.

• 22:16Speaker 04

Yes, before she was Amy Schumer.

• 22:19Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 22:20Speaker 04

And yeah, I got to, I had like 15 minutes to like think in my head what I'm gonna say and then I I got to do it. And and then I got to do another scene with just Larry where I got to yell at him.

• 22:34Mark Normand?

  Hell, yeah.

• 22:35Speaker 04

And make him laugh in the middle of it. It's just a dream. I mean, I love that show so much.

• 22:40Mark Normand?

  Me too.

• 22:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:41Mark Normand?

And this is the early year. Those are the best years.

• 22:43Speaker 04

This is actually not, I don't know what's early anymore. This is actually not, this is 2011, the season that he did in New York City.

• 22:50Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 22:52Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:52Mark Normand?

Oh, I thought this was one of like season two or something.

• 22:55Sam Morril?

This was the season with Bill Buckner, I think.

• 22:56Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 22:57Speaker 04

This is the episode with Bill.

• 22:58Sam Morril?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 22:59Speaker 04

This is the Bill Buckner episode.

• 23:00Mark Normand?

  The car periscope.

• 23:02Speaker 04

  And the what?

• 23:03Mark Normand?

  The car periscope.

• 23:04Speaker 04

  What is that?

• 23:05Mark Normand?

Oh, pull it up. It was one of his inventions.

• 23:08Speaker 04

  It's in the same.

• 23:10Mark Normand?

It's in the the New York season.

• 23:12Speaker 04

Oh, but it's not in that episode.

• 23:14Sam Morril?

Do we have, do we have any on YouTube? Do we have the the speech?

• 23:18Mark Normand?

  Ooh.

• 23:20Speaker 04

  Oh, Yaris.

• 23:21Mark Normand?

I didn't know you could act too.

• 23:24Speaker 04

  Well, that's subjective.

• 23:26Mark Normand?

  Thank you.

• 23:27Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 23:32Speaker 06

That's what it looks like. It's not what it's gonna be. Oh, what is it gonna be?

• 23:35Mark Normand?

We don't have to watch the whole, but what's cool about this scene is Larry goes to where he lost his virginity in New York City, and I walk by there all the time and I go, ah, there's that building that Larry David lost his virginity in.

• 23:47Mark Normand?

  So it's fun to see.

• 23:48Speaker 04

Is, is, did the real Larry David lose his virginity in there?

• 23:51Mark Normand?

  Yes, yes.

• 23:51Speaker 04

  Oh, that's beautiful.

• 23:52Mark Normand?

Oh, yeah. It was in a no-ho area.

• 23:56Speaker 04

That's a place to lose it.

• 23:58Mark Normand?

Back in the 40s or whenever that was, so, you know. It was a different time.

• 24:01Speaker 04

Did I mention Suzie and Jeff Garland are gonna be on the show?

• 24:04Mark Normand?

  Oh, nice.

• 24:06Speaker 04

  They're gonna be on together.

• 24:08Mark Normand?

  Nice.

• 24:08Speaker 04

And people are gonna get to bid to, uh, interact with them.

• 24:11Mark Normand?

Oof, interact with Garland? They should pay them.

• 24:18Speaker 04

Well, we're having Suzie next to Jeff to make Jeff look normal.

• 24:22Mark Normand?

All right, all right, that helps. He's a good buffer.

• 24:24Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 24:26Mark Normand?

One of the first people I ever opened for, Suzie.

• 24:28Speaker 07

We made it. We made it to the big game. Center stage, every one of you, all give yourselves a clap on the hand. I'm so proud of every one of you.

• 24:42Speaker 04

I literally giggled in the middle of that.

• 24:43Speaker 07

  You know?

• 24:44Speaker 04

So I didn't know I was gonna say.

• 24:45Speaker 07

Before I came out today, I think about, I'm like the Steinbrenner, and I think, what would Steinbrenner say right now? He would say that when you put on this uniform with my name on it, there is no substitute for winning. No substitute. Or you hit me back. So we're going to go out there, we're going to play this other team.

• 25:11Mark Normand?

And this is all off the dome?

• 25:13Speaker 07

With their pussy mustard yellow shit uniforms. We aren't just going to beat them. We will grab them and we will fuck their sisters.

• 25:27Speaker 07

Are you listening? Bring it in, come on! Fuck these people! Fuck these people!

• 25:36Speaker 04

  Wow!

• 25:37Sam Morril?

So you really do two voices? Is what you're trying to tell us?

• 25:40Speaker 04

You know, it's so funny because he had like every comedian in New York audition for parts. Like, there was just one day where Larry Jeff and Larry Charles were just looking at everybody who was a funny actor in New York and they had me read for a completely different part. And then Larry Charles said, "Oh, let him try for Yari." And I just did sort of an Israeli thing. And then I get a call from Jeff later. Jeff Garland and he says, "Larry loves you and he wants you to play the part." But, uh, he says, "Just do the triumph voice."

• 26:17Speaker 04

  Whatever!

• 26:19Sam Morril?

  That's awesome.

• 26:19Speaker 04

  Wow!

• 26:20Sam Morril?

Did Larry write for SNL when you were there?

• 26:23Speaker 04

He came for one episode. He had written for SNL, I think either the year or two years before I was there, like in the early 80s. When Dick Ebersol was the producer and he was miserable. He got almost nothing on and that's where the story of the Seinfeld episode about pretending that he didn't quit after chewing out the boss.

• 26:43Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 26:44Speaker 04

And just showing up again. And then, oddly enough, I'm not going to say who did this, but there was a writer who ended up working for Larry, who didn't chew out the boss, but he got fired and then still showed up. Whoa! Like, the next week and everybody...

• 27:01Sam Morril?

  So he pulled a Larry?

• 27:02Speaker 04

He did. But Larry quit? This was before Seinfeld, I think. Who was it? Schneider? No, I can't say. Alright. But he ended up being a very successful writer, but, uh, but not on Saturday Night Live. But Larry did do one episode. So Jerry Seinfeld hosted SNL in like 1991. Whoa! And, um, I was there and I wrote a sketch called Stand Up and Win where Jerry is hosting...

• 27:29Sam Morril?

  The game show then?

• 27:29Speaker 04

The game show with all the other comedians.

• 27:31Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 27:32Speaker 04

And all the questions are like rhetorical, like, "What's the deal with peanut, with airplane food or whatever?" Yeah. And then the correct answer is, "I know!"

• 27:43Mark Normand?

He's a great sport about that. You can do the what's the deal with all day long and he's he's not never offended.

• 27:48Speaker 04

Yeah, and I hear I saw in an interview where he never said what's the deal.

• 27:52Mark Normand?

  That's right.

• 27:52Speaker 04

  In his act.

• 27:53Mark Normand?

  He never does.

• 27:54Speaker 04

But it just feels like he would have said that. Yeah, I don't know.

• 27:56Sam Morril?

But he'll say like, what's up with this?

• 27:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 27:59Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, but what's the deal? Because years ago, before this sketch, I wrote a sketch with Tom Hanks and Damon Wayans.

• 28:04Sam Morril?

Dude, this one, I've seen, pull that one up too first.

• 28:09Sam Morril?

  For the writer's room, you're just like, what's a what's a shitty version of a Seinfeld joke?

• 28:13Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 28:14Sam Morril?

I mean, that's like, it's so fun to write.

• 28:15Speaker 04

It was inspired more by, and probably what's the deal? Because that's where I put it in the original Tom Hanks.

• 28:21Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 28:22Speaker 04

Was because I had noticed that there were so many Seinfeld knockoffs in this.

• 28:26Mark Normand?

  Right, right.

• 28:27Speaker 04

And that's really what I was parodying at the time, less than Seinfeld himself.

• 28:31Sam Morril?

  Sure.

• 28:32Speaker 04

So that's probably where what's the deal came, because there were comedians.

• 28:35Sam Morril?

But Jerry found it very funny.

• 28:36Speaker 04

Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Obviously, because he played along in this one. And Sandler and Schneider, who were both working stand-ups at the time and intimately aware of of hacky hacky.

• 28:49Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 28:50Speaker 04

They both helped me write this.

• 28:51Mark Normand?

  Nice.

• 28:52Speaker 04

Yeah, and and there's Sandler's character after a while. Uh, he just gives the same answer over and over, which is, who are the ad wizards who came up with this one?

• 29:04Speaker 04

No matter what the question was, who are the ad wizards?

• 29:08Mark Normand?

That was a huge trope in stand-up. Who put this together? I'd love to be in the room when they came up with, uh, whatever.

• 29:14Speaker 04

  Yeah, exactly.

• 29:15Mark Normand?

  Or whatever.

• 29:16Speaker 08

Does that really ever sink in that like you have millions and millions of people, private jokes are just things that you wrote? Like, lines like that were private jokes with me and my friend.

• 29:25Speaker 04

Oh, that's so funny. Yeah, I hear people tell me every now and then. Yeah, I repeated, and it's a line I don't even remember, to my friend for years.

• 29:34Speaker 08

  Yeah.

• 29:35Speaker 04

You know, like, like, there's a sketch I wrote where it's at a Greek restaurant and and Rob Schneider is the lead guy. They're serving gyros and, uh.

• 29:45Speaker 08

Is it about juice? Because this is a private.

• 29:47Speaker 04

  Like it a juice.

• 29:48Speaker 08

I have that with my friend.

• 29:49Mark Normand?

  Oh, that was huge.

• 29:50Speaker 04

  Yeah, that was huge.

• 29:51Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 29:52Speaker 08

You like it a juice? Absolutely.

• 29:54Speaker 04

  It's big on the internet.

• 29:55Mark Normand?

No, we said that in school.

• 29:57Speaker 08

  Yeah.

• 29:57Speaker 04

  That's so.

• 29:58Mark Normand?

  And the Bears. Was that?

• 29:59Speaker 04

Well, the Bears, everybody talked about that.

• 30:01Sam Morril?

In this climate, it's just nice to hear someone say they like the juice.

• 30:04Speaker 08

  Oh.

• 30:07Mark Normand?

  Like a the juice?

• 30:08Speaker 04

You don't like it a juice.

• 30:12Sam Morril?

He's just watching this like, well comedians must be insufferable to hang out with.

• 30:16Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 30:17Sam Morril?

This is what some people must think it's like to just be hanging out.

• 30:21Speaker 04

Now, folks, if you're watching, comedians aren't like this at all. They're just really angry and bitter.

• 30:27Speaker 04

  And they're a blast.

• 30:28Sam Morril?

  It's in their heads, yeah.

• 30:29Mark Normand?

Somebody made an account, because they do comedians in cars getting coffee, and it was like, the poor waitresses. And it's a cut of all them trying to be funny with the waitress, you know, fucking Larry David and Will Ferrell and all these people. And the waitress is like, alright, I'm just trying to take your order. Like, stop fucking with me. We're gonna diner. Leave me alone, Louis Black.

• 30:47Speaker 04

You guys are fun, and like, I'm generally like, I kind of recoil when I'm around too many comedians. I get tense. Like, it feels competitive and stuff, or angry. There's so many of them that are just so angry, and I I just get afraid to hang out with them.

• 31:04Sam Morril?

Well, the tough thing with the angry comic is they have to stay angry about everything.

• 31:07Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 31:07Sam Morril?

So you're just on stage, like, have you seen these fucking socks? And you're like, I know.

• 31:12Mark Normand?

Right. I mean, Louis Black is a candy corn chunk, and you're like, how can you be mad about candy corn? Is this real? And then how do you manufacture that every bit?

• 31:20Speaker 04

  He's like the sweetest guy.

• 31:21Sam Morril?

Oh, dude, he was so good on this show.

• 31:24Speaker 04

  Oh, I bet.

• 31:25Sam Morril?

Uh, yeah, man, we gotta get him back, because he said he drank with us.

• 31:28Mark Normand?

  Ooh!

• 31:29Sam Morril?

He didn't drink with us last time, but yeah, we, uh...

• 31:32Mark Normand?

Dropped a hell of an apple.

• 31:33Speaker 04

And he would finally stop shaking, I think, if he would get drunk.

• 31:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 31:38Speaker 04

  He's got that thing.

• 31:39Mark Normand?

  Yeah, right, he's a jiggler.

• 31:41Speaker 04

He's a jiggler, is that the term?

• 31:43Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 31:43Speaker 04

There's a stand-up term for every type of comedian.

• 31:46Sam Morril?

  The nemesis of the rizler.

• 31:47Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 31:47Sam Morril?

  The jiggler.

• 31:50Speaker 04

Sarah Sherman's got that funny kind of...

• 31:51Mark Normand?

  Oh, really?

• 31:52Speaker 04

Well, just that, that, I mean, I think she's hysterical on Saturday Night Live.

• 31:57Sam Morril?

  Yeah, she's so funny.

• 31:58Speaker 04

She has that very funny kind of body movement where she's always like...

• 32:01Mark Normand?

  Jerky.

• 32:01Speaker 04

  Jerky, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:03Mark Normand?

Beep, pull up a little Sherman jerk.

• 32:09Mark Normand?

Oh, wait, don't type that in. But yeah, yeah, I like that, you know, who had the best jerk was Jerry Stiller.

• 32:15Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 32:15Mark Normand?

He had kind of a halting way of speaking.

• 32:17Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 32:18Mark Normand?

  Killed me.

• 32:20Speaker 04

  Looking back then.

• 32:23Mark Normand?

Yeah, look at that. Very intentional movements.

• 32:26Speaker 06

  How major.

• 32:27Mark Normand?

Where do you buy these clothes?

• 32:28Speaker 06

A Jew president, he would have been like, "We can't go to war with Iran because it's too expensive."

• 32:36Mark Normand?

  She's jerky.

• 32:37Speaker 06

"We have to ban assault rifles because they're too loud."

• 32:42Speaker 04

  What is that?

• 32:43Speaker 06

"I don't need Medicare for all because my stomach is like..."

• 32:46Mark Normand?

It's funny how no matter how alternative or wacky you go, it still just comes back to stereotypes. You know, with comedy, it's like, "It's too expensive, I'm a Jew, whatever." It's, it's, you can go like this peak level of comedic intelligence, but it's just...

• 33:00Speaker 04

That's probably the most mainstream thing she does.

• 33:02Mark Normand?

  That's true. Yeah, probably.

• 33:06Speaker 04

Were you at that big SNL thing? Oh, yeah. That was that? That was like a whole weekend.

• 33:11Mark Normand?

  Let's hear it.

• 33:12Speaker 04

It was like a destination wedding, or destination bar mitzvah.

• 33:17Speaker 04

Did you write any of this stuff? No, I pitched a couple of things that didn't get up.

• 33:20Mark Normand?

What'd you pitch? You're still getting shot down, you're a legend.

• 33:23Speaker 04

I'm not, uh, I wasn't part of the writing team, so I'm, I was just like calling Steve Higgins and like...

• 33:29Mark Normand?

  Oh, you're just annoying him.

• 33:30Speaker 04

What if we do? Well, there were a couple of things I thought of. And this is what I do. I sit at home, I'm supposed to be rewriting Leo or something. Leo 2 with Sam and Bert. And I hear like Conan toasting the Oscars, so I'm like, I don't know. Anything to not do what I'm supposed to do. Yeah. So I thought of something for Conan and they used it, but for SNL, well, there are a couple of things. One thing was, I thought it was really funny that Trump and Elon Musk had hosted the show.

• 33:57Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 33:58Speaker 04

And there were so many, you know, that's what they do. They bring back all the hosts, you know, like, uh, and they're in the audience. So there were a lot of people wondering if Trump was gonna be invited or not. I don't know if he was or not, but he obviously wasn't there, but I thought it'd be really funny for... For James Austin Johnson to either sit in the audience, you know, during the show and kind of schmooze with Keith Richards, you know, like or whoever. Right. Or some other person who's hosted in the past, like, you know, Jeff Goldblum and like, what was it like for you, you know? Yeah. You know, or do a thing where. Love the fly. Or do, yeah, exactly. Or, or do a thing where they, like a pre taped interview, because there've been so many documentaries

• 34:40Speaker 04

about SNL, like examined more than World War II. And, and like where they interview like two previous hosts, like Ariana Grande and, and, I don't know, let's say, uh, who's a person, anybody? Tom Hanks. And Tom Hanks, and they're just talking earnestly about, yeah, the first time I was so scared and I walked in there and I, you know. Yeah. And I was like, you know, Lorne Michaels had begged me for years to do the show and I was like, is everybody gonna be as funny as me? I was worried, you know, for. Were you there for that episode? I was there for the Trump first episode, not the controversial one. Oh, yeah.

• 35:21Speaker 04

In 2016 or 2015, but in 25, 2005, he was the host of The Apprentice and everybody loved him back then. Sure, I watched it. Yeah, and he hosted and I actually had a cartoon in the show that required Trump to do a voiceover. So we actually came into the booth and did this voiceover for me and then the cartoon got cut. Ah. But it was a cartoon, I don't know, there was a little commercial within the cartoon about the Trump Cartoon Network and he was going to make the Flintstones live in a luxurious prehistoric high rise. You know, I don't know, he was like redoing every cartoon so that it was luxurious. I don't remember anything else about it. You can't find it because it was cut.

• 36:06Speaker 04

Like the Flintstones house, but he makes it better? The most luxurious, beautiful.

• 36:12Speaker 04

Uh, caveman, all the other cavemen are scared and intimidated. Was he cool with it? And Popeye now has, uh, I can't, I can't remember.

• 36:21Sam Morril?

Could he laugh at himself back then?

• 36:23Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, he could, I mean, he read it. Yeah. And he was very polite and. Ah. And, uh, you know, uh. You never see him laugh. No one has footage of him laughing. I've seen him laugh once. Okay. It was on The View.

• 36:37Sam Morril?

It was, it was a baby in a cage.

• 36:39Speaker 04

And. No, it was the time, this is a very famous quote.

• 36:43Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 36:43Speaker 04

Pull it up. So he's on The View and he says, he's. Is this when they're blowing him? Cause they used to love him. No, everyone blew him back then. Colbert, everybody. No, he, um, he was on The View with Ivanka. Okay. And they're just, you know, being interviewed together. I don't remember why, probably because she was on The Apprentice with him. Ex-wife. And at one point he says, uh, isn't she beautiful? You know, he's always like objectifying her right in front of her. Yeah. Can you believe these tits? Oh, daughter, sorry. I mean, have you ever seen tits like this in, uh, you know, can you imagine how tight a pussy must be? It was never that bad. It was never that bad, but he's, oh, yeah, yeah, this is it. Oh, the old view, yeah.

• 37:28Speaker 04

He says, I'd be dating her if she wasn't my daughter. She is attractive.

• 37:32Speaker 09

Stop it. Oh, it's so weird. Stop it.

• 37:36Speaker 04

  Keep going.

• 37:38Speaker 09

Well, you're known for saying outrageous things.

• 37:41Speaker 04

No, keep going. Oh, no. So right after that. He, she, Joy Behar says, well, you know, what are you, Woody Allen? Oh, that's a solid line. Yeah, and Trump laughs his ass off. Oh, we gotta find that. I gotta see this. Like a longer version of, um, of the same clip. Wow.

• 38:04Sam Morril?

Well, the fact that he laughed at that's probably a good sign.

• 38:07Speaker 04

  Yeah. Oh, yeah, true.

• 38:09Sam Morril?

Cause it's way worse to be insulted by that.

• 38:11Speaker 04

Right, right. That's a very good point. Here's a clip where it says, this is his real laugh from a clip from The Apprentice. Okay.

• 38:23Mark Normand?

Eh, that's a chuckle. I need to laugh. Yeah. That's a heh heh.

• 38:27Speaker 04

  He laughs his ass off.

• 38:28Mark Normand?

  Alright, I'll find it.

• 38:29Speaker 04

  To a Bayhar's line.

• 38:30Mark Normand?

We got the, we can do this. I'll get it. Then we'll go to Norm on The View, talking about how Clinton's a good guy.

• 38:34Speaker 04

Oh, that was a funny one.

• 38:35Mark Normand?

  So good.

• 38:36Speaker 04

The what? Norm on The View. Oh, when he accuses Hillary of murdering, uh...

• 38:41Mark Normand?

I thought it was a matter of public record.

• 38:43Speaker 02

Yeah, people murder, yeah. Everybody knows the guy murdered.

• 38:46Mark Normand?

  Hey, that's pretty damn good.

• 38:47Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 38:49Speaker 04

I did a thing once on, I was a guest on Seth Meyers and I wanted to do this bit where I imitated Norm, but it was, I don't know, they were afraid the audience would find it too dark.

• 39:02Mark Normand?

Ah. It seems to be scrubbed, I cannot find it. Oh, interesting.

• 39:07Speaker 04

Yeah, there's a power right there.

• 39:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 39:09Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 39:10Mark Normand?

  It's gonna cut off again.

• 39:11Speaker 04

That's it. Oh, it's gonna cut off?

• 39:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah, it's only 20 seconds.

• 39:16Mark Normand?

Yeah, it's not gonna make it.

• 39:18Speaker 04

  It's not.

• 39:22Speaker 04

  There you go.

• 39:25Mark Normand?

  Hey! Whoa!

• 39:29Speaker 04

  See, and he's...

• 39:32Speaker 04

That's the hardest thing I've ever seen him laugh.

• 39:35Mark Normand?

And he gave her props, he's like, "I know, come on, bitch."

• 39:38Speaker 04

He can be a very personable, that was his, I mean, that's, that's why he's who he is.

• 39:44Mark Normand?

  Damn. Nicely done.

• 39:46Speaker 04

I give him credit for like, changing politics, cuz I covered...

• 39:49Mark Normand?

  Sure.

• 39:50Speaker 04

So when I was doing, uh, in 2016, I did a whole series of political specials as Triumph, covering, covering, uh, the primaries first. And so I went to Iowa and New Hampshire and I went to like, Ted Cruz and Jeb Bush and, and they're all doing these, you know, uh, rote kind of speeches. Uh, no matter, you know, how many times I would see them, they're doing the same prepared shit.

• 40:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 40:20Speaker 04

To the point where I did one remote where I was like, going to every Ted Cruz pit stop and by the third one, I was reciting the speech, like, down to the pauses, next to people who were listening as Triumph. I'm like, literally repeating the speech verbatim as he's saying it. Uh, but Trump...

• 40:41Speaker 04

Was like this guy who's just like, how's everybody doing? And he's just like Regis Philbin.

• 40:47Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 40:47Speaker 04

Literally just your friend. He's like, isn't it great? We're gonna get everybody together and, and, and, uh, oh, and did I tell you what happened last night? I was with Arnold Palmer and you know, he's got a huge dick, as everyone knows. But, and he's just so conversational and he made the audience feel like they were all in on this movement.

• 41:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 41:10Speaker 04

In, in a completely different way than all these other guys doing the bullshit, trying to be Obama. We are going to together, we will bloody blue.

• 41:19Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 41:19Speaker 04

You know, and it makes a huge difference. And I feel like, I feel like that's had a really positive, that's the one thing he did that's had a positive impact on.

• 41:28Mark Normand?

  Right.

• 41:28Speaker 04

Politics. I feel like more people are trying to really communicate as. Yeah, except Democrats won't go on podcasts.

• 41:35Mark Normand?

  Yeah, what's up with that?

• 41:36Speaker 04

Oh, well, whatever happened with that? Cause then there was like a he said, she said where Kamala claimed that she did wanna go on the podcast and Rogan created. She went on Call Her Daddy and that's it. No, I know, but she created, she was claiming that Rogan created an excuse.

• 41:52Mark Normand?

Ah, he wanted her, I think. And he, he said she gave him a lot of parameters.

• 41:56Speaker 04

  I heard that, but I don't know.

• 41:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 41:58Speaker 04

Came out later. I don't know if they're just trying to cover their ass.

• 42:01Mark Normand?

  I think so.

• 42:02Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, in general, Trump's just way ahead of the curve in terms of how to, how to break through as a communicator. As an entertainer too. As president, he's basically, I mean, when he, when he was, he was doing rallies when he was president, like almost every week, he would just be doing rallies.

• 42:22Mark Normand?

Yeah, it was like a stand-up act.

• 42:23Speaker 04

Like whether Biden, whether you think Biden was successful or not, he was horrible at making the case that things were going well. He was, he was hiding.

• 42:34Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 42:34Speaker 04

Hiding and yeah, I don't know.

• 42:36Mark Normand?

  Falling off bikes.

• 42:37Speaker 04

It's so confusing. Cause like I saw him be interviewed on Conan's podcast and he was really, he seemed really sharp.

• 42:44Mark Normand?

  Biden?

• 42:45Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:45Mark Normand?

  He did Conan's pod?

• 42:46Speaker 04

He did Conan's pod, he did Jimmy Kimmel and he was really sharp on that. And I was like, why are people saying he's seen all this is like the late. Late 2023.

• 42:56Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 42:57Speaker 04

And then, I, I don't know, I think he must have declined or something, which is eminently possible, or, or he just has bad days.

• 43:05Sam Morril?

All it takes is a bad day, right?

• 43:07Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 43:07Sam Morril?

That one debate was, was rough.

• 43:10Mark Normand?

He had a couple of bad days.

• 43:11Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 43:11Speaker 04

Yeah, but most of them were hidden, I guess.

• 43:14Mark Normand?

  Yeah, yeah, I think so.

• 43:16Speaker 04

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 43:17Speaker 08

Someone said that was the genius of Trump's insults is that you'll eventually live up to it.

• 43:22Mark Normand?

  Ooh.

• 43:23Speaker 08

So if he's like sleepy Biden this, that, and like, there'll be a day where you fuck up. And you're sleepy, or like you get something, or you stumble.

• 43:30Sam Morril?

  People run.

• 43:31Mark Normand?

  Sleepy Joe.

• 43:33Speaker 08

  Yeah.

• 43:33Sam Morril?

Eventually Ron DeSantis is like, I need a fucking sandwich. Right into my plan.

• 43:39Mark Normand?

Remember when Trump did the marriage ref? Remember that show that Seinfeld?

• 43:43Speaker 04

  Tom Papa?

• 43:44Mark Normand?

  Yeah, Trump did that.

• 43:45Speaker 04

Who was he on with? Tom Papa was the host.

• 43:47Mark Normand?

I think Adam Carolla was the other guest, and maybe Madonna?

• 43:50Speaker 04

  Trump and Melania were on?

• 43:53Mark Normand?

No, no, no, it was like a panel show.

• 43:55Speaker 04

  Oh, giving advice on marriage?

• 43:56Mark Normand?

  Yes.

• 43:57Speaker 04

What you wanna do is get a prenup.

• 44:02Speaker 03

It's funny, but I also believe you learn something from it.

• 44:04Speaker 04

  You're very helpful.

• 44:05Speaker 03

People can learn a lot about their own marriage by watching it, and maybe that's a good thing.

• 44:09Speaker 04

And don't do what I did, whatever that, you know, just listen to my advice and do the opposite.

• 44:16Speaker 04

  You learn a lot.

• 44:17Sam Morril?

Did you work with other presidents?

• 44:19Speaker 04

  Did I?

• 44:20Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 44:21Speaker 04

I got to do, I wouldn't call it working with more than working at. So in 1995, you know, like when Conan started, or even the whole late night show on NBC, they did this bit where Conan would interview celebrities and it was a photograph and they would cut the lips out. And the lips would, like, I would do Bill Clinton and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Trump a couple of times and Bob Dole and everybody, basically. I did Bill Cosby, I did a million people on that show. But yeah, so Bill Clinton was the most popular thing I did in the early 90s.

• 45:03Speaker 04

And Conan got invited to host the White House Correspondents' Dinner. And he got to speak.

• 45:09Mark Normand?

  Uh huh.

• 45:10Speaker 04

  Sorry, that's just a text.

• 45:11Mark Normand?

  Uh oh, that's true.

• 45:13Speaker 04

Somebody has the Bill Cosby joke. No.

• 45:16Mark Normand?

  Jack and Jill too.

• 45:17Speaker 04

I'll remember that one. So Conan, um, they wanted Conan to not just speak, but interview Bill Clinton in front of Bill Clinton. So it was a pretty trippy experience getting to imitate the president right in the same room, right in front of him.

• 45:35Mark Normand?

  Was Clinton?

• 45:36Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 45:36Speaker 02

  Is there photos of this?

• 45:38Speaker 04

  Uh, maybe on C-SPAN.

• 45:41Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 45:41Speaker 04

Was Clinton laughing? He laughed like a donkey.

• 45:45Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 45:46Speaker 04

Yeah. And I don't know if, to this day, I don't know if he was being sincere.

• 45:49Sam Morril?

You can only say that about a white president, by the way.

• 45:51Speaker 04

  Sorry?

• 45:52Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 45:54Speaker 04

Yeah, that's true. Back then, I did a lot of black people on the show.

• 45:58Sam Morril?

  Did you?

• 45:58Speaker 04

Oh, yeah. I did Don King.

• 46:00Mark Normand?

  Oh, hell yeah.

• 46:00Speaker 04

Only in America. I was like, yeah, just did the whole thing. It was one of the most popular ones I did.

• 46:06Sam Morril?

Well, yeah, is it there or no?

• 46:07Speaker 04

No, that's just Bill Clinton on.

• 46:09Mark Normand?

  Oh, sorry.

• 46:09Speaker 04

That's just a typical Bill Clinton bit.

• 46:14Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 46:17Speaker 02

You seem pretty, uh, you seem pretty upbeat, given what's going on right now.

• 46:21Speaker 07

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, I'm upbeat, man. Yeah, nothing gonna bring me down. Yeah. It's Crimmins time at the White House. Yeah.

• 46:28Speaker 04

  Crimmins time.

• 46:30Mark Normand?

  Like seventies.

• 46:31Speaker 02

That's, that's right. Well, a very merry Crimmins to you too, sir.

• 46:36Speaker 04

This is the Monica Lewinsky scandal, I guess.

• 46:38Mark Normand?

My favorite president, I'd say. Well, what do you think? You got a favorite?

• 46:41Speaker 04

  Um, Eisenhower. I don't know.

• 46:45Mark Normand?

  I'm a big Lincoln man.

• 46:46Speaker 04

Eisenhower's better. He's aged well, Eisenhower. Of course, Lincoln.

• 46:50Sam Morril?

  What, uh?

• 46:51Speaker 04

So Clinton, so I did Clinton in front of Clinton.

• 46:53Mark Normand?

  Yep.

• 46:54Speaker 04

And he's laughing like a, he's he-hawing. He's, and I don't know if he's laughing to show what a good sport he is, or if he was really, thought it was funny, maybe. But Hillary was there too.

• 47:06Mark Normand?

• 49:11Speaker 04

And Hillary, you know. Angry. A little more serious person than Bill Clinton. That's what I hear. And we made a point not to do any, like.

• 49:21Sam Morril?

  Dick suck jokes?

• 49:22Speaker 04

Dick suck jokes, Jennifer Flowers, any of that. We're gonna do any poon, poon dog, uh, poon hound jokes. Yeah, because it was, it would be rude to do it in front of his wife. So, we didn't do that, but. What's left? Well, there was, you know, getting high and things like that. Saxophone. There was, yeah, there was, I mean, we made a joke out of the fact that this was on C-SPAN, so I had Clinton start confessing things like, I inhaled, yeah. And it's all killing because he's like, nobody's watching, it's C-SPAN, it's like a tree in the forest. That's cool that he did it, though. It is, no, and, but then at one point, I did this joke and Conan and I debated whether to do it or not.

• 50:04Speaker 04

And all it was, was like, uh, he's just making more confessions and he's like, me and Willie Nelson got high on the roof of the Kremlin naked, and, you know, and I don't even remember what, what the joke was, but he's just taking it too far. And Hillary just dropped her head. Wow.

• 50:22Sam Morril?

  Oh.

• 50:23Speaker 04

  And Dick Cavett.

• 50:24Sam Morril?

If he did that more, maybe he wouldn't have done what he did to Monica.

• 50:26Speaker 04

Maybe so, ladies and gentlemen. Wish I had said that back then. That would have really brought the room down. Hey Hillary, why aren't you laughing? What the hell? You're dropping your head for the first time.

• 50:39Sam Morril?

I love Rock's little bit, uh, Hillary put the whole country at risk. You know what kind of man you have?

• 50:46Speaker 04

  We smoking fornicator. That's right.

• 50:48Sam Morril?

  That was a great bit.

• 50:49Speaker 04

Great bit. Brilliant. But he, um, so Dick Cavett's in the audience, you know who that is. Sure, sure, the first podcast.

• 50:56Sam Morril?

  Dude, I.

• 50:57Speaker 04

  I would say.

• 50:57Sam Morril?

His old Orson Welles interviews are maybe my favorite.

• 51:00Speaker 04

Oh, he has all his interviews on that ABC show. He did everybody, Groucho, uh, John Lennon.

• 51:05Sam Morril?

There's an, there's an amazing interview with him and it's, uh, guys, Peter Falk, John Cassavetes.

• 51:11Speaker 04

  Yes, they're all drunk.

• 51:12Sam Morril?

And they're all fucking hammered for 45 straight minutes. He just has to, and he's such a pro, he's just rolling with them. Who is the third, uh, Ben Gazar.

• 51:19Speaker 04

  Ben Gazar.

• 51:20Sam Morril?

  And they're.

• 51:20Speaker 04

The craziest, Ben Gazar is the nuttiest.

• 51:22Sam Morril?

  Fucking.

• 51:23Speaker 04

  Yeah, they're, they're completely gone.

• 51:25Sam Morril?

And it, and they're not at all charming. They're just like annoyingly.

• 51:29Speaker 04

I don't know, to me, they were charming because, did, did you ever see the movie Husbands?

• 51:33Sam Morril?

  I didn't see this one.

• 51:33Speaker 04

  It's an amazing movie.

• 51:35Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 51:35Speaker 04

Cassavetes is one of the great filmmakers.

• 51:37Sam Morril?

  He's great.

• 51:38Mark Normand?

  Fuck looks good.

• 51:40Speaker 04

Peter Falk, the in-laws is one of my favorite. I love.

• 51:44Mark Normand?

He's still drinking on the ride.

• 51:55Sam Morril?

It's charming at first, but like 30 minutes in, you're like, what the fuck?

• 51:58Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 51:59Speaker 04

No, it's, it's, to me, it was fascinating. This is the television I want to see where everything goes wrong.

• 52:04Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 52:05Speaker 04

Too many, too much television is like. Yeah.

• 52:07Sam Morril?

  Buttoned up.

• 52:08Speaker 04

That was nice and we all love each other.

• 52:10Sam Morril?

But by the way, Fallon is like doing like lipstick karaoke or whatever. Meanwhile, these guys come out, they show up in a blackout.

• 52:17Mark Normand?

  Hell, yeah.

• 52:18Sam Morril?

And they air the whole thing.

• 52:19Speaker 04

  Basically, it's amazing.

• 52:20Mark Normand?

There's been a few drunks on Letterman back in the day.

• 52:23Speaker 04

  Oh, Chris and Glover.

• 52:24Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 52:25Sam Morril?

  That was.

• 52:26Mark Normand?

  Pull it up.

• 52:26Sam Morril?

  That was a weird one.

• 52:27Speaker 04

  That's a classic.

• 52:28Mark Normand?

  Who, Barrymore? Yeah, Drew Barrymore.

• 52:30Sam Morril?

We watched Tarantino on Leno where he was fucking bombed.

• 52:33Mark Normand?

He was wrecked. We gotta get him on air.

• 52:36Speaker 04

But Dick Havitt said to Conan after the, after the Clinton bit, he said Hillary, Hillary's face changed from Dr. Jekyll to Mr. Hyde. And the whole room saw it and we lost the audience.

• 52:53Mark Normand?

  Oh, wow.

• 52:54Speaker 04

Cause they're taking their cue from President and his wife. And Hillary just was like this and, and we lost the audience and we had like another two minutes or three minutes to go.

• 53:04Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 53:05Speaker 04

They had like Jimmy Carter coming in and it was like, fuck, do we cut bait?

• 53:09Mark Normand?

What about Chris Farley on C-SPAN? That was a classic. Remember when he did Newt Gingrich?

• 53:14Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 53:17Mark Normand?

  It's like Charles Manson.

• 53:20Speaker 04

What drugs is he on here? He claimed that he was in character, that he was like, he was making a movie and he was trying to stay in character.

• 53:30Mark Normand?

What about Joaquin Phoenix? Remember he had that?

• 53:32Speaker 04

  Oh, that was brilliant.

• 53:33Mark Normand?

  Was that?

• 53:34Speaker 04

  He was in character.

• 53:35Mark Normand?

  Oh.

• 53:36Speaker 04

He was doing that for his documentary. And then Letterman had the classic line, "Well, I'm sorry you couldn't make it tonight."

• 53:41Mark Normand?

Ah, solid, solid. This is back when we watched TV.

• 53:47Speaker 04

Yes, exactly. I feel like when Letterman ended, that was the end of watching TV.

• 53:52Mark Normand?

  Conan, Conan had a run.

• 53:54Speaker 04

Before that, once he was on TBS, he did brilliant stuff, but people don't.

• 53:58Sam Morril?

But it was online. People watched it online.

• 54:00Speaker 04

Yeah, people watched it online, which was.

• 54:02Sam Morril?

No one watched that show live. You'd stand up there and you'd be lucky if you got one tweet.

• 54:06Mark Normand?

  That's a good point.

• 54:07Speaker 04

Exactly, but we didn't know that at the time, but it turned out that Conan ended up building this amazing online presence. And that's how everybody watches everything now.

• 54:17Mark Normand?

  I know.

• 54:18Speaker 04

Nobody stays up to watch any of this shit.

• 54:19Mark Normand?

No, this is live and no one's catching it.

• 54:23Mark Normand?

  Wouldn't that be weird?

• 54:24Sam Morril?

Who, who, who are the people you work with on SNL that were like, like crazy?

• 54:29Mark Normand?

  Did you work with Elon?

• 54:30Speaker 04

I did not work with Elon, but yeah, that was something I pitched. So the Elon Musk thing. Yeah, I wanted the, I wanted to pitch that. And then the other thing I wanted to pitch was, um, a song about Lorne Michaels.

• 54:44Mark Normand?

  Hmm.

• 54:45Speaker 04

Uh, cause I have this sick desire going back to when I started at SNL to always poke the bear.

• 54:53Mark Normand?

Sure. Well, that's what comedians do.

• 54:55Speaker 04

Yeah. So like, I mean, when I did the SNL cartoons, I always started with Lorne Michaels chasing a, like a little dog came and tore the logo of the show away.

• 55:06Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 55:06Speaker 04

Revealing TV Fun House and Lorne Michaels cartoons. Like, "Come back here with my show."

• 55:12Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 55:12Speaker 04

And, um, so I wanted to pitch by, so, and I was one of the first people who impersonated Lorne. Me and Dana Carvey.

• 55:21Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 55:21Speaker 04

Uh, and then it just spread over the years. And now I'm told that everyone at the show impersonates Lorne.

• 55:28Sam Morril?

Is there, is there truth to the fact that Mike Myers and Dana Carvey had a falling out because Dr. Evil?

• 55:34Speaker 04

  Supposedly there was like.

• 55:35Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 55:36Speaker 04

So I don't know if it was a real falling out, but I think Dana has said on, in interviews that he was a little upset that, because the pinky, I remember distinctly Dana Carvey, part of his impression of Lorne was Lorne looking at the board. Imagine these are all just sketches that are, you know, and he's contemplating the running order. Uh. Whitney, what do you think? Right, right. If we move at two, two at three. Yeah.

• 56:08Speaker 04

And so I think that was the thing that may have gotten Dana is just that he used the pinky and never like just called Dana and said something like, hey, I'm gonna use the pinky. I'm doing Lauren.

• 56:20Sam Morril?

It is crazy if you feel like someone.

• 56:22Speaker 04

  Your pinky. Right.

• 56:23Sam Morril?

Well, someone kind of takes an impression you do and makes it huge. I could see that.

• 56:27Speaker 04

Yeah. He could have done a different voice and it still would have been, I mean, those Austin Powers movies were so amazing. Amazing, so in the theater. He was like.

• 56:36Sam Morril?

The first one especially was incredible.

• 56:37Speaker 04

  Yeah. One's amazing too.

• 56:39Sam Morril?

  Got great moments for sure.

• 56:40Speaker 04

I heard he's difficult. Mike Myers. You know what? He, uh. I mean, I've heard I'm difficult at times. It's like people who.

• 56:51Speaker 04

I could see difficult. I could see hated. I could see not.

• 56:56Sam Morril?

Do you get along well with Mike?

• 56:58Speaker 04

I actually saw Mike at the, at the, over that weekend and I don't know if this is. It's very weird. So I go up to Mike at this, there was like a, there was like a Friday night thing at Radio City with all the musicians and then there was a toast to Lorne Michaels on Saturday night in the Rainbow Room. Ooh. That only the fancy people got invited to and I got in and I was very flattered that they included me. But I mean, I did work there 20 years. Uh, and Mike was there and I just looked at him and I said, you, have you ever thought that you could play Elon Musk on the show? Like Dana did like a three second impression, uh, in December or in November after the election.

• 57:43Speaker 04

And he shit on it publicly. Oh, pull that up. And Mike's was, um.

• 57:49Sam Morril?

Then Mike took it again and really flew with it.

• 57:51Speaker 04

More broad and Mike looks much more like him.

• 57:54Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 57:54Speaker 04

Uh oh, it's just like Dr. Evil all over again. He's still over there. No, no, he is still. I'm joking. Dana didn't, Dana did it reluctantly. Wow. So I don't know. If, but, but there it was, like a week later.

• 58:05Sam Morril?

Were you close with Dana Carvey?

• 58:06Speaker 04

Literally a week later, he's, Mike is doing, I'm very close with Dana Carvey, he's one of my best friends.

• 58:11Speaker 02

  He's funny.

• 58:12Sam Morril?

We want him on the pod, we're big fans.

• 58:14Speaker 02

One of the funniest people on the planet.

• 58:15Sam Morril?

We had Spade, we gotta get Carvey, man.

• 58:18Speaker 04

  Oh yeah, Carvey's, uh.

• 58:20Sam Morril?

I think he's, I think he's one of the best.

• 58:22Speaker 02

  Oh yeah.

• 58:23Speaker 04

He's in a lot of people's top five, if you were to make a top five.

• 58:26Sam Morril?

I think it's hard to leave him out of your top five.

• 58:28Speaker 02

  Let's do top five each.

• 58:31Sam Morril?

  It's hard, right?

• 58:31Speaker 02

Trying to make this episode interesting. Come on, what do you think?

• 58:34Speaker 04

I don't know what to do, I'm sorry.

• 58:36Sam Morril?

  No, you're great, man.

• 58:37Speaker 02

  No, cast.

• 58:39Speaker 04

Cast. I would say that, uh, Will Ferrell, for me, is the all-time best.

• 58:46Speaker 02

  All-time number one?

• 58:48Speaker 04

  For me, because.

• 58:48Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 58:49Speaker 04

If you look at it like a five-tool player.

• 58:52Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 58:52Speaker 04

Like, he could be funny as like a regular guy in a sketch, he could do funny impressions, crazy ones, like Robert Goulet and.

• 59:00Speaker 02

  Oh yeah.

• 59:01Speaker 04

And George Bush, he did amazingly.

• 59:02Speaker 02

  Right.

• 59:03Speaker 04

And he could write his own shit.

• 59:07Speaker 02

  Really?

• 59:08Speaker 04

  Absolutely, he wrote the fucking.

• 59:10Speaker 02

  The Cheerleader?

• 59:11Speaker 04

No, well, I'm sure he co-wrote that, but he wrote the cowbell sketch.

• 59:15Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 59:15Speaker 04

All by himself, all by himself. There you go, there you go.

• 59:20Speaker 02

  That's insane.

• 59:21Speaker 04

  Cleaning up.

• 59:22Sam Morril?

Who else? Who else is in your five?

• 59:24Speaker 04

  Uh, Eddie Murphy, obviously.

• 59:26Speaker 02

  Okay, that's a twofer.

• 59:27Speaker 04

There's nobody, whoever has a list can't leave Eddie Murphy out.

• 59:31Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 59:32Speaker 04

  That's, I don't see that.

• 59:34Speaker 02

  Alright, alright.

• 59:34Speaker 04

Nobody's carried the show like Eddie Murphy did for the years he was there.

• 59:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:40Speaker 04

  Some would say.

• 59:40Speaker 02

That's true, it was tanking in the eighties.

• 59:43Speaker 04

And then it gets, I think after those two, it's, gets subjective, like, some people would say Hartman.

• 59:48Speaker 02

  Oh, Hartman.

• 59:50Sam Morril?

I don't know how you'd go and put Hartman in there too.

• 59:52Speaker 04

Yeah, but then there's Dan Aykroyd, who's also the same kind of thing.

• 59:55Speaker 02

  Farley.

• 59:56Speaker 04

And then Farley and Belushi, like, which one of those? But then there's like Kristen Wiig, I would put Kristen Wiig.

• 1:00:02Sam Morril?

  She's amazing.

• 1:00:03Speaker 04

I would make her, I would put her up there with the, those guys.

• 1:00:06Speaker 02

  Alright, what do you got?

• 1:00:07Sam Morril?

That, it's, that's very close to mine.

• 1:00:09Speaker 04

  And Bill Murray, I would.

• 1:00:10Speaker 02

  Ah, my hero.

• 1:00:12Sam Morril?

It's tough for me, yeah, I mean, Ferrell's so good, and, and I was, I was like the perfect age for him at that time.

• 1:00:17Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:00:19Speaker 02

All right, I'm going Ellen Clegg Horn.

• 1:00:22Speaker 04

How about me? I was like the fourth Bears guy. I'm just saying. Fourth guy in that sketch.

• 1:00:28Speaker 02

  Molly Shannon's pretty amazing.

• 1:00:29Sam Morril?

I love her, dude. I think she's awesome.

• 1:00:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:32Speaker 04

  Shannon. I do think Molly-

• 1:00:34Sam Morril?

She's a great dramatic actress, too.

• 1:00:36Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:00:36Sam Morril?

That movie where she had cancer?

• 1:00:38Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:38Sam Morril?

What's it called? She was amazing.

• 1:00:40Speaker 04

She's also, she was amazing on, um, The White Lotus.

• 1:00:43Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:00:44Speaker 04

  She's, um-

• 1:00:45Sam Morril?

  She rules.

• 1:00:46Speaker 04

And she, people knew she was a great actress when she was on the show. I remember people talking about, like, she just had a, a depth to her acting.

• 1:00:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:57Speaker 04

  That was beyond sketch.

• 1:00:58Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:00:58Sam Morril?

We were at a party at Schumer's once and Rachel Feinstein and I were like, oh, fuck, we're late for the cellar. We're like, oh, goddamn, she's gonna get mad. This is like many years ago.

• 1:01:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:01:07Sam Morril?

And Molly Shannon just overheard us saying this and she like sprinted across the street and got us a cab. And I was like, that was like cartoonish, the way she just, she sprinted. She's like, you're gonna make it. And we're like, Molly Shannon?

• 1:01:20Speaker 04

  She's hilariously kind-hearted.

• 1:01:22Sam Morril?

  She rules.

• 1:01:22Speaker 04

Yeah. She's the best. I love her.

• 1:01:25Sam Morril?

I was like already a fan. I'm like, this is crazy.

• 1:01:27Speaker 02

  Damn.

• 1:01:27Speaker 04

She and Sheri O'Terry had an enormous impact on the show. Like, they came in together in like 1995. And I was, it was like right in the middle of my time there. And I gotta say, like, when I was hired, it was like, all the, the cast was entirely, they looked like they might as well have been, you know, the cast of The Office or something.

• 1:01:51Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 1:01:52Speaker 04

All white people and, and dominated by men and, uh, the writing was dominated by men. And there was like an inherent, like justification, like, well, you know, more men are public figures and in politics and whatever.

• 1:02:07Sam Morril?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:02:08Speaker 04

And there was a perception, I'm sure, among some people that men are funnier.

• 1:02:13Sam Morril?

  Sure.

• 1:02:13Speaker 04

Then Sheri and Molly come in and they're just writing their own characters and they're murdering.

• 1:02:18Sam Morril?

  Right.

• 1:02:19Speaker 04

And they were the first two to really do that.

• 1:02:21Sam Morril?

  Ah.

• 1:02:22Speaker 04

Just bring in their own, I mean, Gilda Radner probably did it in the seventies.

• 1:02:26Sam Morril?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:27Speaker 04

But after that, like, there were a lot of great women, but-

• 1:02:30Sam Morril?

  Tina Fey.

• 1:02:30Speaker 04

  That was later.

• 1:02:31Sam Morril?

  Right, right, right.

• 1:02:32Speaker 04

It was like those two just destroyed with like, you know, Mary Catherine Gallagher and the cheerleaders. Sheri had like five or six that, you know, cause before that, women would- Being sketches that they wrote and there was this prejudice like, oh, that's a woman's sketch. It's like sort of tender and and it's about, you know, it's more about, uh, there was this perception that they're they write the sketches that are softer and just about relationships and womany things. And then these two come in and do these really big, broad characters that are they're killing. And the show changed overnight and it's never been the same. Interesting.

• 1:03:12Speaker 04

Women are just as or more important now on the show than men are in. Let's not go more. Well, I think there've been periods, I like, that was a period where women kind of dominated. Then Adam Jastier came in and like, you know. Yeah. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler were the. And then Tina and Amy came in. Weekend update. Yeah. So.

• 1:03:31Sam Morril?

  What about?

• 1:03:32Speaker 04

Give those two a lot of credit.

• 1:03:33Sam Morril?

What were other highlights of that weekend? Cause that just seems so crazy.

• 1:03:36Speaker 04

So, well, first I'll tell you the pitch that I had, which was, so it was gonna be a song called Everybody's Got a Lorn that I had pitched to Martin Short and he liked it. Everybody's got a Lorn. And then he was gonna shove the microphone into all the into the audience and just make celebrities impersonate Lorne. Oh. Cause he knew that everybody did a Lorne and we would find funny people to do it, whether it's like Emma Stone and then, you know, Charles Barkley. Right. And then we'd get to like previous cast members and they would do their Lorns and then, you know, coming back to Marty Short every now and then. And then he'd get to current cast members and they'd be afraid, you know, and they'd be like, I'm Lorne Michaels and I'm a legend or whatever. They'd try to fuck it up. And then it finally get to

• 1:04:21Speaker 04

like a cameraman who's like, please, please, I, I haven't paid my mortgage off. I, I, I got a kid. I still got two kids going to college and do your fucking Lorne. Oh, I think that the show is really cool. Just desperate.

• 1:04:36Sam Morril?

What's it like pitching to Martin Short?

• 1:04:38Speaker 04

Oof. He's not intimidating. He's a really nice guy.

• 1:04:41Sam Morril?

  Oh, cool.

• 1:04:41Speaker 04

Canadian. And he's also really friendly. It helps that I'm like really old and accomplished. So he's like, Robert Smigel. Ah, I can see that. You're a genius.

• 1:04:52Sam Morril?

He's one of the funniest humans ever.

• 1:04:53Speaker 04

  He's, he's, he's never not funny.

• 1:04:56Sam Morril?

  Dating Meryl Streep.

• 1:04:57Speaker 04

  What? Dating Meryl Streep.

• 1:05:00Speaker 04

  Dating Meryl Streep.

• 1:05:01Mark Normand?

Down. How the hell do you, I mean, imagine watching Martin Short jizz.

• 1:05:06Speaker 04

  Well, he did it.

• 1:05:08Mark Normand?

  Here it is, my semen.

• 1:05:12Speaker 04

  With the Ed Grimley voice.

• 1:05:13Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:14Speaker 04

Can I ask you something? That was very, and that was highly stimulating, I must say.

• 1:05:21Mark Normand?

  Take it, you whore.

• 1:05:25Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:05:26Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:05:26Mark Normand?

  That's bananas.

• 1:05:27Speaker 02

That is a cool ass couple.

• 1:05:29Mark Normand?

Very cool. A lot of stories.

• 1:05:30Speaker 04

Well, Meryl Streep was on the show. She did a sketch with, uh, Kate, Kate, I always call her Kate.

• 1:05:37Mark Normand?

  Blanchett.

• 1:05:37Speaker 04

  Kate Middleton.

• 1:05:38Mark Normand?

  Middleton.

• 1:05:39Speaker 04

  No, Kate, Kate McKinnon.

• 1:05:41Mark Normand?

  McKinnon.

• 1:05:42Speaker 04

  Another legendary performer.

• 1:05:43Mark Normand?

She's great, too. Wow, Meryl must be tiny, because Martin Short's what, three foot eight?

• 1:05:49Speaker 04

  He's wearing, uh.

• 1:05:50Mark Normand?

  Heels?

• 1:05:51Speaker 04

  Three foot lifts.

• 1:05:52Mark Normand?

Okay. Wow, good for him. That's a win.

• 1:05:55Speaker 02

  Five eight.

• 1:05:56Mark Normand?

  Five eight, okay, that's average.

• 1:05:57Speaker 04

  Not so bad.

• 1:05:58Mark Normand?

  What's Meryl?

• 1:05:59Speaker 04

  He's the nicest guy.

• 1:06:00Mark Normand?

  Sweet boy.

• 1:06:01Speaker 04

  Yeah, and.

• 1:06:02Mark Normand?

  I know, uh, three amigos.

• 1:06:04Speaker 02

That you had to work with.

• 1:06:05Speaker 04

  Who's an asshole?

• 1:06:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:06Speaker 04

  Oh, man.

• 1:06:07Mark Normand?

  Five six.

• 1:06:09Mark Normand?

  Yeah, come on.

• 1:06:10Speaker 04

They weren't that, man, I gotta say.

• 1:06:13Mark Normand?

  Michael Che.

• 1:06:14Speaker 04

  Michael Che.

• 1:06:16Mark Normand?

  Come on.

• 1:06:16Speaker 04

He's such a nice guy. He actually was walking around with a jacket that he got everyone to sign. Like, at the end of the show. He's just walking around with this, you know, with, with, and he's making people sign it. It was so cute. Because you don't think of Che as like a nerd, but.

• 1:06:35Speaker 02

  He's a, he's a comedy nerd.

• 1:06:37Speaker 04

He is a comedy nerd. He's a great writer, too.

• 1:06:39Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:06:40Speaker 04

Such a funny writer. But you know what was really funny? Paul McCartney was like the last guy to leave Studio 8H. He, he had closed the show. He did, um, The End and, um, Golden Slumber, uh, The End of Abbey Road, basically. He ended, he closed the show with those two songs and.

• 1:06:57Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:06:58Speaker 04

And then everybody piled onto the stage who had anything to do with being there. And I walked down there and then it was just so crowded. I was like, I'm, fuck it, I'm not gonna.

• 1:07:08Mark Normand?

  Do those people get paid?

• 1:07:09Speaker 04

  Who?

• 1:07:10Mark Normand?

  All the performers.

• 1:07:12Speaker 04

I think they have to get paid for just being on the show.

• 1:07:15Mark Normand?

But how much money did he give Paul McCartney? The guy's richer than-

• 1:07:17Speaker 04

Oh, I'm sure he got scale.

• 1:07:19Mark Normand?

  Oh, he got scale, okay.

• 1:07:20Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. Who was the drunkest celebrity that you-

• 1:07:22Mark Normand?

  There we go.

• 1:07:24Speaker 04

Oh, Jesus. You know, I, the party was such a fucking- Rip Torn came back from the dead just before the party.

• 1:07:30Mark Normand?

Oh shit, sorry, I didn't know he died.

• 1:07:32Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:32Mark Normand?

  R.I.P. Torni.

• 1:07:33Speaker 04

He's very dead. It's been, it's been years.

• 1:07:36Mark Normand?

  Oh, I love Torn. That's a bummer.

• 1:07:38Speaker 04

Not enough to follow his, his- What'd you say? I said you were torn.

• 1:07:44Mark Normand?

  And R.I.P.

• 1:07:45Speaker 04

  Oh, no.

• 1:07:46Mark Normand?

  Rip.

• 1:07:47Speaker 04

No, he's, uh, I didn't see anybody totally hammered, I gotta say.

• 1:07:52Mark Normand?

  Damn.

• 1:07:53Speaker 04

It was just a crazy zoo. There was a party afterward at, um, the Plaza Hotel and they like, had fifteen rooms.

• 1:08:02Mark Normand?

  Holy-

• 1:08:02Speaker 04

Like literally, you could just go and there were like four, five floors.

• 1:08:06Mark Normand?

  What?

• 1:08:07Speaker 04

And there were like a thousand people in each one.

• 1:08:09Mark Normand?

  Five floors of whores.

• 1:08:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:08:11Mark Normand?

  Was there blow?

• 1:08:12Speaker 04

It was a lot. I didn't see anything.

• 1:08:14Mark Normand?

  Ah, this cast has changed.

• 1:08:16Speaker 04

I didn't see anything. No, it was, uh, and there was a lot of dancing, there was a run room of dan- I'm not good at parties.

• 1:08:22Mark Normand?

  You don't-

• 1:08:23Speaker 04

  Loud noises.

• 1:08:24Mark Normand?

Come on. You're not the party animal?

• 1:08:26Speaker 04

I know, it's hard to believe. But there were, there were eras when you were there that were probably crazy. Honestly, like when I got there in the late eighties, we had heard all the stories about the seventies and they were kind of like, you know, um, what's the term when it's like, uh, a teaching moment, kind of like, a cautionary tale.

• 1:08:46Mark Normand?

  Mmm.

• 1:08:47Speaker 04

You know, Belushi had only died like two or three years before I got there. And, yeah, he hired a bunch of people that were literally like office workers in terms of their personalities. They were hilarious, you know, but it was like Kevin and Dana and Phil. None of these people were, were wild like that. And then Farley came in.

• 1:09:08Mark Normand?

  Yeah, he did.

• 1:09:09Speaker 04

And, and things started to change a little bit. And then- What do you remember, like how do you remember Farley? Oh, I loved Farley. He's a lot smarter than people gave him credit for. He was treated kinda like-

• 1:09:24Sam Morril?

You're worse than Norman. This is crazy.

• 1:09:26Mark Normand?

  Well, my phone doesn't ring.

• 1:09:27Sam Morril?

No, but you got the beeping with it.

• 1:09:29Speaker 04

I got that. That's the opening riff from I've Just Seen a Face.

• 1:09:35Speaker 04

The Beatles. I actually wanted to talk to Paul McCartney and pitch him. I was like, why don't you do a country album? Because he's done a couple of amazing country songs. That's one of them. I've Just Seen a Face. And I just wanted him to laugh in my face and say, that's a million people who've suggested the sc garbage. Whatever. But I didn't get the opportunity.

• 1:09:56Mark Normand?

  Sandler sang a song.

• 1:09:57Sam Morril?

  Farley.

• 1:09:58Speaker 04

Farley. Yeah, he was, um. Robert, he was a lot like he was on the Chris Farley Show.

• 1:10:04Mark Normand?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:10:05Speaker 04

He loved comedy and he's like, Robert, remember when you did that joke? Like if I would make a joke that he laughed at, he would just savor it. You know, like I used to do this thing where I would make fun of,

• 1:10:21Speaker 04

when people would make him fall in sketches.

• 1:10:24Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:25Speaker 04

Because it just seemed kind of hacky after a while. So I like, you know, what are you gonna do this time? A triple box top? You know, just making, giving his different falls names and he would just be like,

• 1:10:38Speaker 04

  triple box top.

• 1:10:46Mark Normand?

I read in that book, Gasping for Air Time, that at one point.

• 1:10:49Speaker 04

Oh, that's, uh, Jay Moore's book, yeah.

• 1:10:52Mark Normand?

I think him and Spade shared an office.

• 1:10:54Speaker 04

  They did.

• 1:10:55Mark Normand?

Yeah. So one time Spade was like, I've got this book, this like limited edition, whatever book, some crazy book. And he went out of the room and Farley jerked off and jizzed in the pages and closed it. And then, you know, Spade had to come back and the book was ruined, obviously, but I just love that. That reminds me of my childhood.

• 1:11:13Speaker 04

You know how much that book could sell?

• 1:11:14Sam Morril?

  He had a horrible father.

• 1:11:17Mark Normand?

  Well, to me.

• 1:11:17Sam Morril?

What is this, the Catch of Mockingbird? You fucking queer.

• 1:11:20Mark Normand?

  Edition. It was the Quran.

• 1:11:21Sam Morril?

  Jizz.

• 1:11:22Mark Normand?

It was the Quran, but I'm just saying, you could, you could do that back then.

• 1:11:25Speaker 04

  The Quran.

• 1:11:26Mark Normand?

You can't do that in an office anymore. I just like the, that's what I want to happen at SNL.

• 1:11:30Speaker 04

You can't jerk off to the Quran anymore.

• 1:11:33Mark Normand?

  No, you can't.

• 1:11:34Sam Morril?

  These fucking woke pussies.

• 1:11:36Speaker 04

I'm afraid of no. And then go into that voice.

• 1:11:40Mark Normand?

  That's what I want.

• 1:11:41Speaker 04

  No, it's inappropriate.

• 1:11:44Mark Normand?

It's inappropriate. Yeah, that's what they would say.

• 1:11:46Speaker 04

  Farley, and they'd be right.

• 1:11:48Mark Normand?

Of course, but that's the fun part.

• 1:11:50Speaker 04

But, and they would talk in that voice. Yeah, that's just, every comedian does that voice now. Whenever anybody's politically correct.

• 1:11:57Speaker 02

  No, it's not.

• 1:12:01Speaker 04

He suddenly turned into a match game contestant from the 70s.

• 1:12:06Speaker 04

  Farley, uh...

• 1:12:09Mark Normand?

  He liked the hookers.

• 1:12:10Speaker 04

He liked, he, he, he had a wild, he definitely brought the, brought the show back.

• 1:12:16Sam Morril?

I've heard Sam say that he'll like, he would drink and he'd be ready to throw down.

• 1:12:21Mark Normand?

  Really?

• 1:12:22Speaker 04

He'd get angry when he was drunk sometimes.

• 1:12:24Mark Normand?

  Ooh, that's scary.

• 1:12:25Speaker 04

Yeah, no, there was a darkness, but he was clean for like, two and a half years.

• 1:12:30Sam Morril?

  Wow, really?

• 1:12:31Speaker 04

Yeah, because he got fired from the show temporarily.

• 1:12:37Mark Normand?

  Oh, no.

• 1:12:38Speaker 04

When I actually was with him. So, I used to do things in Chicago with him, like the super fans. Like me and him and George went. We would do these extracurricular bits because it was so big in Chicago. So, one time, literally, we went to Soldier Field before the Bears playoff game. And they had us give a pep talk at, at the 50 yard line before the game started. Me, George and Farley.

• 1:13:10Sam Morril?

  Wow.

• 1:13:11Speaker 04

Like before an actual Bears playoff game. That's how big the characters were at the time. And, um, Farley, but afterward, Farley, uh, sort of broke off from us. And later I heard that he cleaned out his, uh, hotel refrigerator.

• 1:13:28Mark Normand?

  Uh-oh.

• 1:13:29Speaker 04

And he put his hand through a glass window.

• 1:13:32Mark Normand?

  Ooh.

• 1:13:33Speaker 04

Yeah, he was with, uh, an old Second City friend.

• 1:13:35Mark Normand?

  Oh, boy.

• 1:13:36Speaker 04

Uh, who couldn't control him. And then... Lauren heard he was out of control and he fired him for a few, for at least a month or two. And it really shook Chris up and he was literally cleaned up. He did Tommy Boy clean, I'm pretty sure.

• 1:13:55Mark Normand?

  Ah.

• 1:13:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:13:57Mark Normand?

Can I just reiterate my point about the jizzing in the book?

• 1:13:59Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:14:00Mark Normand?

Okay, I wasn't saying, uh, my point is, I feel like if he did that now, he'd be demonized. But he can do that and still be considered a fun guy.

• 1:14:09Speaker 04

No, I was fucking with you.

• 1:14:10Mark Normand?

  Alright, alright, alright.

• 1:14:11Speaker 04

I totally got what you were saying.

• 1:14:11Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:14:12Speaker 04

I was just trying to make a joke.

• 1:14:13Mark Normand?

Oh, okay, alright, alright. I love the jizzing in the book.

• 1:14:15Speaker 04

I'm just sad because, think of how many more books he would have jizzed in.

• 1:14:22Speaker 04

  You know?

• 1:14:22Mark Normand?

Good point. Well, you gotta know where you're left off.

• 1:14:25Speaker 04

You know, they could have been sold- Alright, goddamn, bring me Hanley's new book. Let me rub one out. They could have been sold for charity, you know, they could have been, I could have raised a lot of money for my-

• 1:14:33Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:34Speaker 04

I could auction them off. Robert, whatever you need.

• 1:14:38Mark Normand?

If you jizzed in Mein Kampf, there'd be a lot of dead Jews in there. Alright. You get it?

• 1:14:44Speaker 04

  Strong, strong joke, man.

• 1:14:45Mark Normand?

  Okay.

• 1:14:46Speaker 04

  That was fucking solid.

• 1:14:49Speaker 04

  The jizz was solid.

• 1:14:50Mark Normand?

I'm trying to get us out of the-

• 1:14:51Speaker 04

This is the day to tell that joke.

• 1:14:53Mark Normand?

  That's true.

• 1:14:54Speaker 04

  It's real!

• 1:14:56Mark Normand?

  There you go.

• 1:14:58Speaker 04

What, um, yeah, what are some other, are there any other like memories you look back on where you're like- Not a one. No. No?

• 1:15:03Mark Normand?

  Nah.

• 1:15:04Speaker 04

Alright, um, let's see, let's, uh, well, the SNL anniversary, uh, who else was, got to talk to Billy Crystal, that was exciting. Never met that guy before. Yeah, what'd you talk about? And I met Eddie Murphy.

• 1:15:20Mark Normand?

  Hey!

• 1:15:21Speaker 04

Talking about burying the lead. What the fur dog! I met Eddie Murphy, he was at that Lorne Michaels toast.

• 1:15:27Mark Normand?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:28Speaker 04

  And, uh-

• 1:15:30Speaker 04

And he just walked in my direction, otherwise I would never have approached him. I would have been terrified. But he's like, I don't remember how the conversation started, but uh, he said, hey, and I was like. He knew who you were. That was what was crazy. I was really literally like a little kid. I was like, my name is Robert Smigel. I did cartoons on the, I know who you are. You're Robert Smigel.

• 1:15:53Mark Normand?

  Whoa, that's gotta feel good.

• 1:15:55Speaker 04

It was shocking. I was just. What'd you talk about? Well, I told him, I just got all SNL nerdy because I am an SNL nerd. And I told him, hey, did you see, uh, there's a magazine article where uh, they interviewed all the cast members and asked them what their favorite sketch was of all time on SNL and uh, the winner was uh, James Brown's Celebrity Hot Tub Party. Do you know the, do you know the sketch?

• 1:16:20Mark Normand?

  Pull it up.

• 1:16:21Speaker 04

  Oh, now that's, that's.

• 1:16:23Mark Normand?

  Saccharly.

• 1:16:23Speaker 04

And I was one of the people who voted for it. I had actually met one of those writers in a really strange circumstance. The guy, before he was a writer at SNL, he was a uh, a segment producer for the Mike Douglas Show in Philadelphia. My dad was a guest on that show. My dad was a dentist.

• 1:16:41Mark Normand?

  Wow.

• 1:16:42Speaker 04

And he was, he was one of the guys who created, invented tooth bonding. So he was demonstrating.

• 1:16:47Mark Normand?

  Jesus.

• 1:16:48Speaker 04

On a person in the audience.

• 1:16:50Mark Normand?

Thought we had a low bar.

• 1:16:51Speaker 04

  On the Mike Douglas Show.

• 1:16:51Mark Normand?

We had a low bar for guests. Oh no.

• 1:16:55Speaker 04

I know, I know. But anyway, um.

• 1:16:58Mark Normand?

But it's gotta be so hard to be Eddie Murphy. What a, it's almost a cursed life because everybody knows you're the funniest guy ever. And now you have to be funny on command. I mean, the pressure. What if you have a bomb? He can't bomb.

• 1:17:10Speaker 04

Well, he can't bomb on, on the show and he didn't. He was actually in two sketches. He did.

• 1:17:14Mark Normand?

  Oh, okay, great.

• 1:17:15Speaker 04

Amazing Tracy Morgan impression on the show.

• 1:17:17Mark Normand?

  All right.

• 1:17:17Speaker 04

He vomited. And then he did another sketch with Will Ferrell, the two, him and Will Ferrell, the number one and two interchangeable.

• 1:17:24Mark Normand?

  Oh, hell yeah.

• 1:17:24Speaker 04

Working together. It was pretty amazing to watch.

• 1:17:27Mark Normand?

  I'm gonna watch that.

• 1:17:28Speaker 04

But um. I'll tell you one mother crazy thing that I did on the so so I told you about the Lorne Michaels. Uh, idea I had and it was it was shot down very quickly. Hmm, by Lorne? Yes, I was told by Lorne. What a. I don't think he was necessarily offended by it, but he just probably didn't want the attention. Sure. That that level of uh.

• 1:17:50Speaker 02

Yeah, he's already getting a lot of attention.

• 1:17:51Speaker 04

Yeah, all about him on his own show. So, but 25 years ago, I was doing cartoons. Uh, on SNL and they were very popular at the time. So they asked me to do an anniversary show. For the 25th anniversary. And if you want to pull this up, it's insane. It's on Instagram. It's on Triumph's Instagram page. Uh, so. And I did this cartoon. And it was, I just decided to make it all about Lorne Michaels. And because I just, again, I. And he didn't like it? Well, that's the craziest part of it. He uh, panned down. Oh, there it is. Lorne. See Lorne? Yeah. What, what'd he say?

• 1:18:36Speaker 04

Well, he had me watch it with him and Paul Simon like an hour before the 25th anniversary. Here, watch a little of it. You'll get the idea.

• 1:18:50Speaker 04

This takes me back. Oh, yeah. But then in this case. Oh.

• 1:18:56Speaker 10

  Hi, I'm Lorne Michaels.

• 1:19:03Speaker 10

  Thank you. Thank you.

• 1:19:08Speaker 04

  Bottom shot.

• 1:19:11Speaker 10

Thank you. Breathe. You know, I think it was when John and Danny were coming into their own and Chevy came back to host. That the show really had that thing of, are we a hit? Now is our.

• 1:19:29Speaker 04

  Great.

• 1:19:29Speaker 10

And Jimmy Fallon is hot and that's the show.

• 1:19:37Speaker 10

  Thank you.

• 1:19:40Speaker 04

  And then he starts.

• 1:19:42Speaker 10

  Thank you, Mike.

• 1:19:43Speaker 04

  Ha, ha, ha.

• 1:19:43Speaker 10

But that's really not necessary. Thank you. Thank you, Bill.

• 1:19:47Speaker 04

Is that you doing the voice?

• 1:19:48Speaker 10

Yes. We've had a lot of fun tonight. As you know, Saturday Night Live isn't just about glitzy guests in fabulous outfits at glamorous parties. It's also about merchandising. No self-congratulatory celebration would be complete without a nod to the hot new line of SNL anniversary gear you'll be hearing about in loud commercials during the 2 a.m. Jay Leno Show.

• 1:20:12Speaker 04

  Ha, ha, ha.

• 1:20:13Speaker 10

Conehead suppositories. Baldur and his family are anything but regular, but why shouldn't you be? Here's the Dennis Miller Squeeze Me Doll.

• 1:20:24Speaker 11

And what about the people who transverse the entire Gadsden purchase with their [bleep] turn signal on? What do you think that clicking sound is, ass face?

• 1:20:33Speaker 02

  That was really good.

• 1:20:34Speaker 04

  That was really good.

• 1:20:34Speaker 10

Chico Esquela's very, very good orange drink. I was in St. Bart's when they approved this one. And if that's not enough, here's a few quick clips from the 45th anniversary show.

• 1:20:46Speaker 04

  Oh, my God.

• 1:20:46Speaker 10

  Available on VHS.

• 1:20:48Speaker 09

  We're not worthy. Swing!

• 1:20:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:21:00Speaker 10

And I think it was when Chevy

• 1:21:01Speaker 04

He's like, he's like Howard Hughes.

• 1:21:03Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:21:05Speaker 10

Yes, the SNL anniversary is the talk of the town.

• 1:21:09Speaker 04

Then it goes on into a long, a whole song and dance number where he's deciding who gets to sit where, which celebrity. And he's just dancing around with Glee and putting all the people from Dick Ebersol's years in the back and Eddie Murphy and his cat in the front. But anyway.

• 1:21:25Speaker 02

At least he kept the caption short. That's good news.

• 1:21:28Speaker 04

  Yes, so.

• 1:21:29Speaker 02

  Holy hell!

• 1:21:31Speaker 04

  I know.

• 1:21:31Speaker 02

  Jesus, Rob?

• 1:21:32Speaker 04

I told the story that I'm about to tell you.

• 1:21:34Speaker 02

  Oh, OK.

• 1:21:35Speaker 04

It's a good story. So literally.

• 1:21:38Speaker 02

  Oh, Will Sivins.

• 1:21:39Speaker 04

So like, so, so I submit this script.

• 1:21:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:42Speaker 04

And one producer tells me, there are two producers under Lorne. One tells me, oh, you can't do that part about merchandising and telling the boring story. He's not going to like that. Then the other producer says, oh, no, that part, I really like that part. I think he's not going to like the part where he sings and dances around and talks about all the guests. And I was like. What if I, let's do, I'll do it all and then we'll just see. It was like a perfect storm. Yeah. Where I could just say, well, you don't like this and you don't like this, but that means you like the other half. Let's just try it. So I put it, I make, I make the whole cartoon. And, uh,

• 1:22:24Speaker 04

Lauren hasn't seen it, or maybe he has seen it, but he, and I'm showing it like John, I show it to like John Lovitz, who's, who was at the, who had makes a cameo at the end and Paul Schaefer and Lorraine Newman. And they're laughing their asses off. Uh, and then I get a call, uh, Lauren wants you in his office. And this is the 25th anniversary show. Everyone's in a fucking tuxedo. Yeah. And I'm being told, I gotta, and so I go into his office and it's just him and Paul Simon. Nobody else. And Robert, I, I just, the cartoon, I, I, I'm too close to it. I saw it. I, I, I just, I can't judge it. I'm too close to it. So, we're just gonna play it for Paul. Oh, no. His best friend. So I'm, wow.

• 1:23:08Speaker 04

Alone with Lorne Michaels and his best friend. And I'm like thinking, oh my God, like, if I would ever have told the 14 year old me. Yeah. Saw the fucking show and worshiped these two people, the 25 years later, I would be in a room alone with them before this anniversary show, making them uncomfortable. It's just like crazy. A lot of pressure on Paul Simon here, right? Yeah. Yeah. And Paul Simon, of course, is stone faced, you know? He could be very serious. And so we watched the cartoon, including that part where it's basically like practically a Paul Simon skeleton and a toupee. Yeah. Singing still crazy. And he watches the whole cartoon, dead silent. And then just Lauren turns to him. Paul?

• 1:23:55Speaker 04

And Paul's just like, well, um, I didn't think it was very funny, but I did think it was affectionate. Ah. And, and I have no chill. I have no poker face at all. So I just like, can't hide my relief. I'm just like, thank you. Ah. God, see, no. And I'm talking way too much. No, that's what I was going for. Cause it is affectionate. It's not really meant to be. And Lauren's just looking at me like, get the fuck out. Ah, smart move. We get it. We get it. Okay. It's in the fucking show. Hey, well, you got it in. Wow.

• 1:24:33Speaker 04

I got it in and then, no, and then this is also funny. Like, so then the show happens and, and the reason I had written it was because the, I had worked on the 15th anniversary show, which was very self-congratulatory. It was a lot of people at podiums just introducing clip packages and treating it like, you know, commemorating some amazing, it just felt like I always wanted to be like the seventies SNL where it was all counterculture and rebel. Yeah. So I get in there and, um, yeah, and, and, and, and these guys, uh,

• 1:25:10Speaker 04

so, so the show, the 25th anniversary show was way better. Like Bill Murray's doing Nick the Lounge Singer and people are doing sketches together. It's much more active and now I'm feeling guilty that I made fun of the show because it's actually really good. And then they have these moments where they show a Chris Farley sketch. He had just died like a year and a half ago before. And Phil Hartman had died like a year before. Geez. And they have like the cast members introducing a Phil Hartman clip and they're all holding hands. All these guys I worked with, you know, and I'm like in tears at this point. Oh, boy. And then I go up to like an area where there's writers, uh, like Adam McKay and some other guys I worked with.

• 1:25:52Speaker 04

And I was like practically in tears. I'm like, I'm going to tell Lauren to cut the cartoon. It's just not, this show's great and it's, it's, I don't want to shit on the show. It's not right. And Adam McKay's like, it's fine. Don't worry about it. It's, it's not really mean. It's, okay. Ah, there you go. I just shut, shut it off. It's a comedy show. Ultimately, I'm like. As racked as guilt as I felt, I just needed one person to say nah. I was like, okay, yeah, no, we'll do it.

• 1:26:21Mark Normand?

Yeah. Sadly, I have that guy in my brain. At least you asked another person. I go, well, maybe that was too much. And then the other guy in here goes, ah, do it.

• 1:26:29Speaker 04

No, I just, I always need one person to justify my sick behavior.

• 1:26:34Mark Normand?

  But man, what a career.

• 1:26:36Speaker 04

  What a career.

• 1:26:37Mark Normand?

  It's all over now.

• 1:26:38Speaker 04

  It's all over.

• 1:26:39Sam Morril?

  Noted too many stars, baby.

• 1:26:41Speaker 04

  Nice when it lasted.

• 1:26:42Mark Normand?

Noted too many stars, and Leo 2.

• 1:26:44Speaker 04

Leo 2, there's gonna be a sequel to Leo.

• 1:26:46Mark Normand?

Is that out? I don't wanna.

• 1:26:48Speaker 04

  Oh, god, no.

• 1:26:48Mark Normand?

No, but I mean, is that?

• 1:26:49Speaker 04

  Take 3.

• 1:26:50Sam Morril?

  And Sandler and Burr back.

• 1:26:51Speaker 04

Sandler and Burr back. Sandler and Burr back. Lizard and the turtle.

• 1:26:57Sam Morril?

Yeah, an old lizard and an angry turtle.

• 1:27:01Speaker 04

And a jaded, bittered turtle. So Sandler had to put on a whole voice, hi, I'm Leo. And Bill Burr is just like, what the fuck is this? I'm a turtle now. Okay, now I'm a turtle.

• 1:27:12Mark Normand?

It feels like Bill should be the lizard and Adam should be the turtle.

• 1:27:15Speaker 04

  Why do you say that?

• 1:27:18Mark Normand?

  Lizards are angry.

• 1:27:19Speaker 04

  Oh, they are?

• 1:27:20Mark Normand?

Yeah, the Iguana, the Komodo dragon.

• 1:27:23Speaker 04

  Oh, those fuckers. Yeah.

• 1:27:24Sam Morril?

  Mark, the movie's already done.

• 1:27:26Mark Normand?

  That's true. Good point.

• 1:27:27Speaker 04

It worked out. People went with it.

• 1:27:29Mark Normand?

  No, it's a great movie.

• 1:27:30Sam Morril?

  It's, yeah, it's fun.

• 1:27:32Speaker 04

My five-year-old was like, it took me out for a second. Why isn't Bill the lizard?

• 1:27:38Speaker 04

But then I went with it.
