Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from, but when that context is scattered across tools, threads, and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying blind. That's the problem that Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all these pieces together, from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot, assign them work directly, or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by

There's this guy who referenced the old Mythbusters, where like, what gets you more wet, walking or running in the rain? And apparently, they made a new episode redacting that statement and saying it was false, but no one saw that one. And everyone still thinks walking in the rain gets you less wet, which-

• 1:37Speaker 01

  People out here just walk.

• 1:38Andrew Manganelli?

  Feels really obvious, but-

• 1:41Speaker 02

I just can't imagine walking through a rainstorm, clenching your heat, being like, "This is better. This must be better."

• 1:47Andrew Manganelli?

Dude, there's generations of people doing that because of that Mythbusters episode.

• 1:51Speaker 01

I love that person running. He's gonna get so much wetter than me.

• 1:54Speaker 02

  Idiot.

• 2:01Speaker 01

What is up people of the internet? Welcome back to another episode of the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I'm Marquez.

• 2:06Andrew Manganelli?

  I'm Andrew. And I'm David.

• 2:07Speaker 01

This week, okay, there's actually a lot to talk about this week, but we can kind of like speed run through it, maybe, hopefully, we'll see.

• 2:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Maybe.

• 2:15Speaker 01

I tested the Tesla robotaxis, finally. There's also a slew of iPhone 17 leaks. There's a bunch of new other gadgets we want to talk about and a couple of Google things to throw in there. It's gonna be a good time.

• 2:27Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. But first, I'm doing the but first.

• 2:30Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:30Andrew Manganelli?

Where Adam and I are doing it. We have a story to tell you guys.

• 2:33Speaker 01

  But first.

• 2:35Andrew Manganelli?

On Tuesday, a bunch of people from the office went to this pizza place called Raza in Jersey City, which is like, everyone's apparently obsessed with it because it says like, the best pizza in New York is actually in New Jersey.

• 2:46Speaker 01

I tried to go there one time without a reservation and there was like, there were spots of it in the bar and I was like, can I sit at the bar? And they were like, that's a three hour wait.

• 2:54Andrew Manganelli?

  It's What the heck?

• 2:56Speaker 01

  That's a different meal time.

• 2:57Andrew Manganelli?

We made the reservation. It was like, that's breakfast, man. Breakfast. We made the reservation a few months ago, I think.

• 3:04Speaker 01

  Oh, wow. Really?

• 3:05Andrew Manganelli?

It was very good. Yeah. A bunch of us went. It was fun. But as we leave,

• 3:10Andrew Manganelli?

we're like, Adam and I are getting ready to go back to our car and this guy bumps into me and is like, Andrew? I was like, hey, what's up? He's like,

• 3:17Speaker 01

  I'm your long lost cousin.

• 3:18Andrew Manganelli?

No, he's like, I'm listening to Waveform right now and pulls his phone out and shows me mid-episode. He was up to trivia. Yeah. He was like, I'm at trivia right now. And I was like, he was like, can I take a picture? I was like, yeah. Do you want Adam? And he's like, what? And Adam like comes out of the group and then we took a picture. It was, it was awesome. Shout out, yeah.

• 3:36Speaker 01

  That's pretty cool.

• 3:37Andrew Manganelli?

He made sure he wanted to know if you were there. I said, I'm sorry. Marquez hates pizza, so he's not here.

• 3:43Speaker 02

And he asked about me too, right?

• 3:47Speaker 01

It's funny because I did run into Ellis randomly in the airport.

• 3:50Andrew Manganelli?

That also is funny. Oh, yeah.

• 3:51Speaker 01

While we were shooting in LA.

• 3:52Speaker 02

At midnight at LAX, I'm like getting on a red eye flight, like, it's like, like, okay, let's get ready to go to sleep on the plane. I was here, is that Ellis? And I look up and it's Marquez and Jana. And we've never run into each other outside of work before.

• 4:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:05Speaker 02

Like randomly. I go all over the country with you, but yeah, that was really weird.

• 4:10Speaker 01

That's not the first time I've run into one of you guys in the airport.

• 4:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Really?

• 4:14Speaker 01

Did I run into you at the airport? No, I ran into Brandon at Newark Airport. Oh, yeah. Yeah, Terminal A. I was good, it was the other way around. He got off a flight, I was going in to get on a flight. Oh. Small world. Uh, also, in that airport, uh, a woman recognized me as that car guy. Ooh. Which is interesting.

• 4:30Andrew Manganelli?

Was that the first time that's ever happened?

• 4:31Speaker 01

Second time, second time ever. Uh, another person recently was like, "You do the automotive content." And I was like, "Oh, yes." Very good.

• 4:37Andrew Manganelli?

  Wow.

• 4:37Speaker 01

Um, so it was cool. I feel that way. There was a guy in my neighborhood who stopped me and he's like, "Aren't you the guy that does the panoramas?" And I was like, "Whoa."

• 4:46Speaker 01

I do like being recognized for that.

• 4:49Andrew Manganelli?

  That is...

• 4:50Speaker 01

So if you ever see us in person, definitely ask me about the car videos and ask David about the panoramas.

• 4:54Andrew Manganelli?

And just ask about Ellis at all.

• 4:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 4:58Speaker 01

So he doesn't feel bad? Okay, I, I do have a bit of a rant, though. Um, okay. Do any of you guys still play Wordle every day? No.

• 5:06Andrew Manganelli?

  Yes.

• 5:06Speaker 01

You play, uh, yeah. I played this like once, it gives me too much anxiety. I don't, I don't like... Yeah, you should say that before. Yeah, it's too anxious inducing. You know, we, we still have a Wordle channel in Slack and we still have a couple of people playing every day. I, we interviewed the creator of Wordle many years ago. Josh Wardle. And part of what we discovered in all of our research about Wordle is there is just a database, just a, a bin of all of the words that are five letters long that they will go through before they repeat. Hmm. And I, you know, they kind of handed that off to New York Times. Now there's an editor that like sort of picks the word of the day or whatever. But they haven't repeated any words since they started Wordle.

• 5:44Speaker 01

And in these last few days, I think they've gotten to the bottom of the barrel of words they didn't want to use. Oh. Because there have been so many weird, bad, like, bad, annoying to guess words in the past two weeks that I'm, I'm starting to think they're at the actual bottom of the barrel.

• 6:01Andrew Manganelli?

We're scraping the barrel at this point, for sure. I feel like it's been like the last month or so. You, you normally go in being like, "These are the letters I want to knock out to see if like, they're ones to use." The amount of two guesses with all grades that I've had lately is wild. There's so many double letters because like guessing the same letter twice in one word is a bad strategy because you want to knock out as many words as possible.

• 6:23Speaker 01

We recently had tizzy as one of the words. That's a good one!

• 6:27Andrew Manganelli?

  That's not a good one.

• 6:28Speaker 01

Double Z, who would guess double Z in...

• 6:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Dizzy!

• 6:33Speaker 01

Another one, I don't even know how to say it. Assay. Assay. Yesterday was assay. A S S A Y. Two double letters. I don't know. I didn't even Google it. I finished the puzzle and I threw my phone across the room. Just kidding, I didn't do that. But why is that one of the words?

• 6:48David Imel?

I did a couple of weeks see people just tweeting like, what the actual heck? And I was like, what? And then I found out they were talking about Wordle.

• 6:55Speaker 01

Yeah, Wordle hasn't been trending on my Twitter, I still call it Twitter, in a long time. And these last couple of weeks, it has been trending on Twitter for me.

• 7:03Andrew Manganelli?

It's the most I've ever just like, put in letters of a word that I'm not even sure is a word and hit, okay. And just guess. And that's how I got assay or assay last night.

• 7:13David Imel?

  Assay, assay.

• 7:15Andrew Manganelli?

We looked it up last night, or this morning, I think it's.

• 7:17Speaker 02

It's the test you do to determine the.

• 7:19Andrew Manganelli?

  Metal or?

• 7:20Speaker 02

Yeah, the purity of an ore. I'm looking at this list, guys. I don't know. This sounds like a you problem.

• 7:25Andrew Manganelli?

It's really easy when you look at it, but when you look at it through the, the scope of like, good Wordle strategy, this is hard. Which maybe that's the fun part, but I wish they all weren't in the last month. I feel like we're just at the hard ones now.

• 7:39David Imel?

Yeah. Is it a you problem because there's no you in the word that they're releasing, the use?

• 7:46Andrew Manganelli?

There's only one you word in here that I wrote down. Undid.

• 7:49David Imel?

  Undid.

• 7:49Speaker 01

Yeah, these are all, you wrote down a bunch of words from Wordle from the past month.

• 7:53David Imel?

  Okay.

• 7:53Speaker 01

  Savvy.

• 7:55David Imel?

  That's fine.

• 7:56Speaker 01

  S A V V Y.

• 7:57David Imel?

  Yeah, that's a normal word.

• 7:58Andrew Manganelli?

But guessing that is really hard.

• 7:59David Imel?

It is a normal word, but it's like that, you're never gonna get that.

• 8:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Two Vs and a Ys.

• 8:04Speaker 01

  Um, foist.

• 8:06Speaker 02

  What does that mean?

• 8:06Andrew Manganelli?

I don't know what foist is.

• 8:07Speaker 02

You don't know what foist means?

• 8:08Andrew Manganelli?

  No!

• 8:09Speaker 02

To foist, to, to foist is, is to, to force, no, it's to force, I mean, I think it literally means pick up, but in modern English, it's only figurative and it means to force upon someone. So like, for example, you would say, I am dismayed that Sam Altman foists his virtues upon American society.

• 8:26Speaker 01

Which makes perfect sense. I've just never, ever heard anyone say that before.

• 8:33Andrew Manganelli?

  I think I got this.

• 8:33Speaker 02

Wait, you don't know the word gopher with an F?

• 8:36Speaker 01

  Gopher.

• 8:37Andrew Manganelli?

  G O F E R?

• 8:38Speaker 01

  So I know the animal, G O P H E R. I don't know what G O F E R is.

• 8:43Speaker 02

  I forget if it's a verb or a noun.

• 8:45Speaker 01

  Go for gold.

• 8:45Speaker 02

It's someone who goes and retrieves something as like an errand person. Like that is their, that is their title and their duty is to go and retrieve items.

• 8:54Speaker 01

  Never heard that.

• 8:55Andrew Manganelli?

  Gopher.

• 8:56Speaker 01

Do you want a gopher coffee?

• 8:57Speaker 02

  I'm not gonna like nervy.

• 8:58Speaker 01

  No, that'd be so funny. Baller, B A L E R. What is that?

• 9:02Speaker 02

  That might be.

• 9:02Speaker 01

  That's baler.

• 9:03Andrew Manganelli?

  Baler?

• 9:04Speaker 02

And that might be someone who bails.

• 9:05Speaker 01

  So that's B A I L, though.

• 9:08Speaker 02

No, no, that's someone who bails like I'm canceling. This is someone who bails hay, like, like takes bundles of straw and produces.

• 9:14Speaker 01

  I didn't know that was a verb.

• 9:15Speaker 02

  Let me confirm that.

• 9:16Speaker 01

A machine for making paper is a baler.

• 9:19Andrew Manganelli?

Foist was hard because I, I don't think I got it because I had like joist, hoist.

• 9:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:23Andrew Manganelli?

All of moist. That makes it harder for me is when it ends in such a common way and then you're just guessing one letter.

• 9:28Speaker 01

You guess all of the normal words that end in ois and then it goes, ah, just kidding. It was foist. You're like, no, that's not.

• 9:34Speaker 02

  Foist is a good word.

• 9:35Speaker 01

Yeah, but you'd never guess that before moist, hoist, joist, any of the other normal.

• 9:39Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay, but other ones.

• 9:40Speaker 02

I didn't guess it before joist because I'm not, I'm not good at my hands.

• 9:43Speaker 01

Haunt, quake, those are pretty normal. Oh, anyway, this is the, this is the Wordle podcast. Sorry.

• 9:48Andrew Manganelli?

If you're not playing Wordle, you're missing out, man. It probably means the game is really good that they're hard like this, but like, yeah. Our Slack has been extremely angry the last month.

• 9:57Speaker 01

I literally guessed once and then it's all gray and then I have a panic attack.

• 10:02Andrew Manganelli?

David, you play Bellatro. That's so much more stressful.

• 10:04Speaker 01

  Bellatro is so, so calming.

• 10:07Speaker 02

The one of these that I will, I will have issue with as somebody who doesn't play Wordle.

• 10:12Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 10:12Speaker 02

  Atria, that's stupid.

• 10:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah, atrio.

• 10:14Speaker 01

  Atria is like.

• 10:15Speaker 02

Atria is the singular or the plural verb of atrium, like the center of a.

• 10:21Speaker 01

That's actually not so bad for me because there, the one thing about Wordle is there are never any plurals that end in S. So there's no four letter, there's no F A N, like, what is a five letter?

• 10:32Andrew Manganelli?

  Plans.

• 10:33Speaker 01

  Plans. They'll never say P L A N S. That will never be a Wordle word.

• 10:36Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, so there's no plurals?

• 10:36Speaker 01

There's no plurals that end in S, but there are words like atria that are plural, but that don't end in S. So part of your Wordle strategy is probably to never use the word S or the letter S at the end.

• 10:46Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 10:47Speaker 01

But you can still guess plurals, so.

• 10:49Andrew Manganelli?

What do you think happens when we run out of five letter words? You know, like, do they start? In Bitcoin, it's like the halving every couple of years. That's what's gonna happen with Wordle.

• 10:57Speaker 01

They should make an announcement so that people can start.

• 11:02Speaker 01

Like guessing old words again. You know what they should do when they do that? They should, they should announce Wordle like that has a four-letter word version and a six-word.

• 11:11Andrew Manganelli?

I think, I think, and you associate how many guesses you get with how many letters are in the words.

• 11:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:16Andrew Manganelli?

So either four guesses for four words or six guesses for six letters, I think.

• 11:21Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 11:22Andrew Manganelli?

Would be fun. We'll see what they do.

• 11:23Speaker 04

I think that would be way too difficult, but.

• 11:25Andrew Manganelli?

You get a whole extra guess.

• 11:27Speaker 04

When we spoke with Josh Wardle, he said that he tested out like six-letter words and there's just so many.

• 11:31Andrew Manganelli?

  There's so many.

• 11:32Speaker 04

He was like, he picked five for that specific reason.

• 11:34Andrew Manganelli?

There's seven years of five-letter words, I think, so.

• 11:37Speaker 01

  True.

• 11:37Andrew Manganelli?

  All right.

• 11:39Speaker 01

Well, we'll find out. We'll find out when we get there because the last word will be like zip, some crazy word. We'll be like, all right.

• 11:44Andrew Manganelli?

It's just like sleeping, zee zee zee zee zee.

• 11:47Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. All right. So this video is going to come out later after this podcast, but I did get to test the robotaxis. In air quotes, robotaxis in Austin, Texas. It was eye-opening. I have never ridden in a robotaxi before. I've also never ridden in a Waymo before. So I went to ride in both. I did them back to back. I did many of each. Took a lot of notes, got a lot of footage, wrote a lot of stuff down, had some interesting experiences. The one that I'll tell here on the podcast, which may be mentioned in the video, but not really be as featured. Is that I got out of a robotaxi and we started to try to hail the next one, which was a Waymo. And then I realized that I left my phone in the robotaxi and it had driven away.

• 12:32Speaker 01

And that is a different level of stressful. Now, it's not as stressful as it would have been in the robo, in the Waymo. Because there's no one in a Waymo. The nice thing is in the robotaxis, there's actually a person, which is normally not what you want, but there is a person in the robotaxi. So they found my phone, called me and were able to. They call you. So basically here's what happened. They had your phone. My iPhone has the beta app and the test flight app for the RoboTaxi app, not my Android phone. Yeah. So what happens is every time you call a RoboTaxi, in order to verify that you're the one that's supposed to get in, the person in the passenger seat goes, "Hey, can I just see the RoboTaxi app?" To confirm that you're the person calling the car. You show it to them, they go, "Okay, great." And then you go along for your ride.

• 13:17Speaker 01

So I always have to have that phone with me. So we get in this ride and I am doing one of the many rides, capturing a lot of footage. I'm holding the cameras up, Brandon's in the passenger seat, holding cameras up. And I've sort of just put the iPhone down in my lap and have started doing all the rest of the note-taking and stuff on my other phone. So we eventually get out the car, close the doors, we gather all our stuff, and I realize I never picked my phone back up. So my iPhone with the RoboTaxi app is sitting in the RoboTaxi in the backseat as it's driving away around Austin, Texas somewhere.

• 13:49Speaker 01

First reaction is definitely, "Oh, God, I'm never gonna see that again." But I have the Find My app on my Apple Watch. So I open that up and it shows me the location of my phone. And I can see it's driving like six blocks away and making turns and who knows if there's somebody else in the backseat now or if it's just going to the next pickup. I'm just picturing you like hauling ass, running at me. That's what I, it was like 95 degrees and I thought if that, if the thing was two blocks away, I would have ran. I would have chased it down. But it was like, it was like 1.2 miles away. Yeah. And I was like, "Okay, well, I can see it now." And then every time I refreshed, it would be a little further away, a little further away. And so I hit the like ping it button. I marked it as lost, which put my phone number on the screen and then I pinged to play a sound. Oh, nice. So I figure the person in the car Yeah.

• 14:34Speaker 01

is hearing this iPhone blaring a siren in the backseat. He's just gonna reach back and see, "Oh, I'll just, you know, go back to where I dropped that guy off and like give him his phone back." Never happens. I hit that sound button many, many times, probably 15, 20 times. Wow. Nobody ever picks it up. But I keep following his GPS location, Brandon and I are trying to figure out, what do we do here? Do we wait for it to come back? Do we try to take another Uber to the location? I'm following it and after a while it like stops and it's like a mile north. And I'm like, "Okay, great." So I call an Uber and it's a Waymo and...

• 15:14Andrew Manganelli?

  Follow that car.

• 15:15Speaker 01

Yeah, we basically, we get in the Waymo and the Waymo starts going towards the GPS location of the robotaxi where it stopped. But then as we're on our way there, it turns around and starts going back to where we're going.

• 15:26Andrew Manganelli?

And you're like, let me out.

• 15:27Speaker 01

And we're like, oh, God. So we cancel that ride, or we have it turn back around and go back to the, or we just cancel that ride and go back to the start. And we thought it was coming back to us, but then it went past us and it started going south. So then it went like a full 15 minutes south of us and I just kept following it. And then again, I see the location stop and it's like 15 minutes south. So I'm like, okay. We call an Uber, go to that location. As we're on our way, it starts going even more south. But we get to that spot again and basically, uh, it gets to another spot where it stops and then I get a phone call saying, hey, did you leave this phone in a robotaxi? It's like, finally, dude, I hit that button like 20 times, nobody called me. And they said, yeah, that, that was, I said, that was me, that was my phone.

• 16:11Speaker 01

And it's like, yep, you can come to the like Tesla service center at this address and pick it up.

• 16:14David Imel?

Oh, so they went to drop it off at the service center.

• 16:17Speaker 01

So I think the robotaxi automatically goes back to the service center after every so many miles. These things are doing limited miles and are, I assume going back to service centers to just get cleaned at least or whatever.

• 16:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Or charged.

• 16:32Speaker 01

Or charged. Something I noticed is every robotaxi I took had almost the same amount of battery life, which is interesting. So I went back there, the guys got my phone, hands my phone, great, we're all good, we resume and continue our testing. But that was, that was terrifying. I think if it was lost in a Waymo where there is nobody in it and it's going to pick up other people.

• 16:54David Imel?

There's Waymo support though on the app.

• 16:56Speaker 01

Right, that would have been easier because I still have the Waymo app on my phone and I can just call Waymo.

• 17:02Andrew Manganelli?

  Well, in your scenario.

• 17:03Speaker 01

But in my scenario with the robotaxi app being on the phone that I lost in the robotaxi, I couldn't call the robotaxi support.

• 17:10David Imel?

  Right.

• 17:11Speaker 01

  That was the challenge.

• 17:11Andrew Manganelli?

That's what most people would experience though, because most people don't have two phones. And the phone that they called the app with is probably the one.

• 17:17David Imel?

It would have been even worse for them because they couldn't have even like put their phone number.

• 17:23Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, when you do that like lost thing, I guess, do you get to put what phone numbers in it? So I would put like.

• 17:29David Imel?

You can do the whole thing from your watch?

• 17:31Speaker 01

Yeah, I could edit the phone number and put a message on the screens. So did you have to call your Android phone? I did.

• 17:37David Imel?

Yeah, I was gonna say, most people wouldn't even have a phone number to call.

• 17:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:40Andrew Manganelli?

If you're with someone, it would be like.

• 17:41Speaker 01

Yeah, if you're with someone. You could put an email, you could put whatever, just to have them reach out once it gets found. What if they weren't wearing an Apple Watch? Then that'd be tough. You would not find, you'd have to like go have like another device with Find My on it eventually.

• 17:53Andrew Manganelli?

And what if this was a bunch of cybercabs being run by some random guy who bought a lot of them and is running a business?

• 17:59Speaker 01

That was the concern is like in the future, these are not gonna have people in them and uh then what happens? Like the next person who gets in is just gonna see an iPhone on the seat next to them blaring.

• 18:08Andrew Manganelli?

And to be fair, I guess most taxis aren't that much different or Uber's, yeah.

• 18:12Speaker 01

Yeah, so Ubers and taxis with a person in them, the driver can drive the car back to you. Like they can go, oh, this, I just dropped this person off and now the phone's beeping. I can just go back to where I was two minutes ago.

• 18:23David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 18:24Speaker 01

  If they're nice.

• 18:25David Imel?

Yeah, I was in an Uber once and there was a pair of AirPods like in the backseat and I told the driver and I was like, did, I think someone left these and he's like, oh, you want them?

• 18:34Andrew Manganelli?

  What?

• 18:35David Imel?

No? I was like, I'm going to leave these with you because they may call you, my friend.

• 18:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:42David Imel?

  That's like, I'm not stealing.

• 18:43Speaker 01

  Which you hope doesn't happen.

• 18:44Andrew Manganelli?

  Stealing someone's headphones.

• 18:46Speaker 02

I find, I guess, New York City thing, I don't know, but like I find AirPods on the ground all the time.

• 18:51David Imel?

  Like individual ones?

• 18:52Speaker 02

No, no, like, like a full pack of AirPods, right? So I'm curious, when you, when you find AirPods, do you A, leave them somewhere obvious? So if the person retraces their steps, they can find them?

• 19:04Speaker 01

But then someone else could just take them easier.

• 19:06Speaker 02

Hide them, assuming they have Find My and will be able to locate them like that?

• 19:10Speaker 01

I'd probably hold on to them, mark them as lost, because you can like tap your phone to them, I think, and then um you can like go to the.

• 19:17Speaker 02

Oh, so I've been, I've been doing the worst thing.

• 19:21David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 19:21Speaker 01

  What are you doing?

• 19:21Andrew Manganelli?

Just like scaling a building and like putting it behind the gutter.

• 19:25Speaker 02

I try to split the difference. I'll try to like find a knoll in a tree where you wouldn't find them unless you're looking for them. But clearly, there's like a smart person.

• 19:35David Imel?

I think there's an easier way to do it.

• 19:36Andrew Manganelli?

I'm imagining the person who finds the AirPods. Ellis lost the find. He's like, how did I lose them in this tree knot? How did it?

• 19:45Speaker 02

That's why I leave a little note. I say, you're welcome from the AirPod fairy.

• 19:49David Imel?

You know, when you like open AirPods on your phone and it says not your AirPods and then you can hit like Mark has lost. Like, these are not mine. I found them. Oh, yeah.

• 19:57Speaker 01

  Makes sense.

• 19:59David Imel?

All right. Well, speaking of cars. Apparently. So I had the opportunity this week to drive the Xiaomi SU7.

• 20:09Speaker 01

  I'm very curious.

• 20:10David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 20:10Speaker 01

This is the car that, what was it Ferrari executives were so impressed by? Ford executives are so impressed by that they bought one. I think also Ferrari now.

• 20:19David Imel?

  Really?

• 20:19Speaker 01

  Yeah. Okay.

• 20:20Andrew Manganelli?

That doesn't sound like a Ferrari thing.

• 20:22David Imel?

I was pretty sure. I'm pretty sure there are like only two or three in the US right now. Hugo Barra, who we had on the podcast last year, I think. He used to work at Xiaomi. He used to work at Google. He used to work at Meta. He's done everything around Silicon Valley. He was like, hey, I got one of these. I was able to import it. I'm holding on to it. You should drive it around and like check it out. So I flew to San Francisco and then I took a Caltrain down to Palo Alto, met him in the morning.

• 20:52Speaker 01

You didn't take a robotaxi? Sorry, we'll get there.

• 20:54David Imel?

  No. I don't think they're they're running there.

• 20:57Speaker 01

  They just opened.

• 20:58David Imel?

  In SF?

• 20:59Speaker 01

They just start. This is a total derailment. They just started doing robotaxi rides in the entire Bay Area. But they're not allowed to do it without someone in the driver's seat. So it's just a guy in the driver's seat with the car on autopilot and it's a robotaxi. Anyway, go on.

• 21:17David Imel?

  Okay.

• 21:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:19David Imel?

Okay, interesting. Okay, so um yeah, so I went down there to drive it. It is kind of, it is kind of crazy. It feels very, very similar to a Model S in like a number of ways. But it also feels like an Android phone at the same time. It's like extremely modular. So Xiaomi sells like all of these different attachments and like modular parts for it. You might remember. They have a physical like switch attachment that goes underneath the giant iPad on in the front.

• 21:48Speaker 01

  I did see that.

• 21:49David Imel?

Right? They have um this little bay underneath the uh like cup holder area that you can. It's like modular and you can swap in and out different stuff. So there's like an air freshener that will put out different scents. Uh there's a Bluetooth speaker that charges over time similar to on the Rivian's. Um they have a flashlight attachment. They've got all this different stuff. In the back, oh, something's very cool. They have speakers in the headrest. So like when you're doing turn by turn navigation, it won't interrupt your music. It'll just like play right behind you.

• 22:21Speaker 01

That's neat. There's a couple of cars I've tested have speakers in the headrest, but it's nice to separate that. If you're using the in-car navigation.

• 22:28David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:29Speaker 01

And put the instructions next to your head.

• 22:31David Imel?

  Right.

• 22:31Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 22:31David Imel?

Uh it has CarPlay, which is kind of crazy because it'll, you know, it has its own kind of Xiaomi ecosystem stuff. And if you, it has like 65 watt charging, I think um in the charging pad area.

• 22:44Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 22:45David Imel?

Uh yeah, it had a lot of really cool features, lots of different modular attachments.

• 22:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:50David Imel?

There is a headrest attachment that you can put a me pad like seven in or whatever. And it wirelessly charges the me pad and it can be used to control like entertainment in the car and everything. There's a refrigerator in the backseat that's like built into the little console. So you can like put drinks in it and stuff and slide it out. Uh yeah, it was kind of insane and that car is pretty affordable. It's like 40K or something.

• 23:14Speaker 01

Yeah, this is the crazy thing is like I didn't realize it goes all the way down to like some probably even cheaper.

• 23:19David Imel?

Even under 30. Yeah, probably like 30 or something.

• 23:23Speaker 01

SU7 standard, SU7 Pro and SU7 Max and then SU7 Ultra.

• 23:27David Imel?

  Ultra is the new one.

• 23:28Speaker 01

  Those names.

• 23:28David Imel?

Yeah, the Ultra is the new one.

• 23:29Speaker 01

Know which one you got to tell which

• 23:30David Imel?

  It was the Max.

• 23:31Speaker 01

The Max. Okay. So the Max starts at forty one three.

• 23:34David Imel?

  That is insane.

• 23:35Speaker 01

  Which is crazy.

• 23:36Speaker 02

Wait, I thought I thought Pro Max and Ultra were just their driver assistance modes, not the

• 23:39Speaker 01

  No, the actual trim.

• 23:40David Imel?

It's a trim for the whole car. The Ultra is like the fifteen hundred horsepower, like, super crazy one.

• 23:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:45David Imel?

  Um, yeah.

• 23:46Speaker 01

  But that's, that's a lot.

• 23:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 23:49Speaker 01

For forty one. Although, you know, that's obviously, there's a thing about these, these EVs, and there's so much talk about competition in the US. And like, if these cars were in the US, they would crush because the US cars are all too expensive and don't have these features. Uh, it reminds me of Lucid a tiny bit. Lucids are all expensive.

• 24:07David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 24:07Speaker 01

But the amount of car you get for the money is still more than a car is worth.

• 24:11David Imel?

  Hmm.

• 24:11Speaker 01

They just have unlimited Saudi money to spend on development and like the car you get is more than the car you're paying for.

• 24:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 24:19Speaker 01

And that kind of feels like similar with this.

• 24:21David Imel?

And they have a self-driving system too, um, but it does not work in the United States.

• 24:26Speaker 01

  Makes sense.

• 24:26David Imel?

Cause none of the roads are mapped, so. Yeah, the mapping system like doesn't work and you have to basically use CarPlay or your phone. But they do have a cool, like, you can, you just tap your phone to the screen and you can mirror your phone on the giant screen too.

• 24:40Speaker 01

This is what the Apple car would have been.

• 24:43David Imel?

Basically, yeah. No, it's like, it's like a Xiaomi car. If you have a Xiaomi phone, you tap your phone to it, you put your phone in the little sixty five watt supercharger thing. You can use your full phone on the display while you're, you know, while you're driving. So you don't actually have to like, you know, do anything on your phone physically. Um, yeah. Did you have any questions about it? I was.

• 25:03Speaker 01

I mean, so you got to drive it, drive it.

• 25:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 25:06Speaker 01

Did anything surprise you about the way it drove? Was it more tuned kind of like a luxury sedan type of thing or was it sporty?

• 25:12David Imel?

So it is meant to be sporty. The problem is that they have this like lock system on it where you have to have driven like, you have to have driven like two hundred miles before it unlocks like the faster speeds. And Hugo had not driven it that two hundred miles yet. It only, it only capped out at like sixty five miles an hour.

• 25:31Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 25:31David Imel?

So it was kind of hard to even be on the freeway.

• 25:33Speaker 01

Does it kind of like grade you in those first two hundred miles to like deem if you're a good, safe driver and then it unlocks?

• 25:39David Imel?

  I don't think so.

• 25:40Andrew Manganelli?

Pretty sure like DJI drones do this too, where like in order to go to like the sport mode on it or even like to be able to fly outside of, they like. Yeah, they geofence it in an even smaller areas to like make sure it's not too far away. Then after X amount of hours or whatever, then you can go further.

• 25:57David Imel?

This was definitely not geofenced, though.

• 25:59Andrew Manganelli?

No, not geofenced. Yeah, but like similar to that, we're just like, I've seen it just like hours is the only thing I'm working on.

• 26:05David Imel?

Yeah. So this one has a certain number of miles, but uh.

• 26:08Speaker 01

I'm trying to think of like what its closest competition would be if it was in the US and I'm I am torn between like Taycan, which is a sportier thing or like, I don't know, I guess like a Model S would be the equivalent.

• 26:21David Imel?

To me, it felt a lot like a Model S, but if the Model S was like nicer. Cause it had it had a lot of strange features like the the chair that you're sitting in, the seat. When you would go around a turn, it would like bend the seat.

• 26:34Speaker 01

Yeah, it was so weird. It was like it would like push into your side to like stop you from like, you know, rolling or whatever. Bolsters crazy.

• 26:43David Imel?

It was pretty crazy. Um, it had like Dolby surround. It had a very cool HUD that could be like raised or lowered and it would like show turn by turn navigation in front of you.

• 26:52Speaker 01

  That's fun.

• 26:53Andrew Manganelli?

When are we getting this, Marcus? Damn.

• 26:54Speaker 01

I, you know, Xiaomi, if you're watching this, I really would love to test this car. I mean, there's other EVs that I've had similar things told to me about, which is like, dude, if this was available in the US, it would crush.

• 27:06David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:07Speaker 01

The Xiaomi SU7 is one of them.

• 27:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:08Speaker 01

I would love to test it.

• 27:09David Imel?

Yeah. So, yeah, I don't think that car could ever be sold in the US for like 40K, but yeah.

• 27:15Speaker 01

Yeah. Importing cars, well, tariffs, blah, blah.

• 27:18David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:18Speaker 01

It would cost a lot more.

• 27:20David Imel?

Tariffs at all, at all. Interesting. I just wanted to bring that up.

• 27:22Speaker 01

We just got to test this crazy car called the Cadillac Celestique. Cadillac loves the letter Q.

• 27:28David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 27:29Speaker 01

Or a GM loves the letter Q, but uh, this was a $340,000 EV.

• 27:36Andrew Manganelli?

How many SU7s could you buy?

• 27:38Speaker 01

Could buy 10, but it um.

• 27:41David Imel?

  At least eight.

• 27:42Speaker 01

It has this insane interior. They basically, when Cadillac first started making EVs, they announced the Celestique and I was like, they're never making that. And then they started announcing others like the Cadillac Lyric and the Cadillac Optic and the Escalade IQ and they started making those. But then they actually started making this celery stick is what I'm calling it. And each one of them is super bespoke, basically. It's like handmade. You go choose all your colors and trims and everything. So the one that we got to test is, uh, all blue on the inside.

• 28:13Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, it's very inside?

• 28:15Speaker 01

All blue on the inside. And I should have taken more pictures, but it kind of looks photoshopped. It looked like I took a picture of a normal car interior and just turned everything in the saturation slider to blue.

• 28:25Andrew Manganelli?

That's like what every CES concept car looks like.

• 28:28Speaker 01

Yeah, that's why I didn't think it was gonna come out. Yeah, it's like this hyper futuristic. This is the one interior picture that I have.

• 28:35Speaker 01

  Everything.

• 28:35Andrew Manganelli?

It just looks like you're, if you weren't wearing a red shirt, I would have just assumed.

• 28:40Speaker 01

  Color temperature was screwed. Exactly.

• 28:41David Imel?

  It's like you're at a rave.

• 28:43Speaker 01

  It was a good time.

• 28:43Speaker 02

I love bespoke stuff. I'm all for like handmade bespoke stuff, but am I the only one that feels a little weird about like a handmade bespoke EV? Because, you know, with the battery replacement, they just have such a shorter lifespan. And I'm, I'm not pro gas car, but like, you know what I mean? Doesn't that sort of feel weird? Like the idea of spending that much and putting that much effort into something that might only be on the road for like eight years?

• 29:06Speaker 01

Yeah, the way I see it, it's kind of just a proof of, not a proof of concept, but it's like Cadillac showing up with this is the best that we can do. And they obviously are not going to sell most of these because they're so expensive and they will bring prices down for things like an Escalade or a Lyric. But the way Miles and I looked at this car was if you're just Cadillac and you're like, what's the actual best electric car that we can build right now? This is their example of that and they'll sell a few of them. And so it was cool to see that, even if nobody actually.

• 29:38David Imel?

It has a four zone glass roof, so you can only tint the seat that you're in.

• 29:43Speaker 01

  Each corner of the roof.

• 29:44Speaker 02

I misspoke. I did not mean to imply that EVs only last eight years. That's crazy.

• 29:48Speaker 01

Yeah, no, but this is, it was not a car that you would buy with any sense or reasonable budget.

• 29:54Andrew Manganelli?

It also looks like a hearse.

• 29:56Speaker 02

Yeah, but that's the Cadillac's great app.

• 29:58Speaker 01

Yeah, Cadillacs all look like hearsees. Yeah.

• 29:59Speaker 02

Have you ever seen the Cadillac hearsees? They're kind of sick.

• 30:02Speaker 01

  Who makes hearsees usually?

• 30:03Speaker 02

  Cadillac.

• 30:04Speaker 01

  Link Cadillac?

• 30:05Speaker 02

Yeah, Cadillac gets a lot of hearsees. I think Lincoln does make hearsees.

• 30:08David Imel?

That's just their aesthetic. Lincoln's and Cadillacs are kind of similar anyway. They're aesthetic.

• 30:11Speaker 02

One of them has Matthew McConaughey and the other one has, honestly, probably Matthew McConaughey too.

• 30:17Speaker 01

  Abraham.

• 30:19David Imel?

Now that we're done talking about cars, you never thought that I would talk about a car on the podcast?

• 30:23Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, there's a first time for everything.

• 30:25Speaker 01

  You do the automotive content.

• 30:28David Imel?

But when it's a phone car, when it's a phone car, you know I'm there.

• 30:34David Imel?

Yeah, okay. Now, are you gonna rant about this laundry robot?

• 30:37Speaker 01

Oh, I do, yeah. And I had a great segue too, because you said this car looked like something you would see at CES as a concept car. Speaking of things that kind of seem like a CES concept, I saw this tweet on my timeline earlier today, and I opened it up.

• 30:50David Imel?

I'm opening it up right now.

• 30:51Speaker 01

And it's some of this guy called Brett, and he's the founder of Figure Robots. And they make AI humanoid robots, I guess. And it's a video, and it says, "Here's F.02 in my home, using Helix to do my laundry." And I play the video, and this humanoid-shaped robot bends over and picks up a bucket of laundry, and, holding the bucket with one hand, grabs the laundry and puts it in the washing machine with the other hand. Very impressive. These kids are watching in awe. It's a human helper in someone's home. It's crazy. He like throws another thing in there, and it handles it well. And the comments and the replies are all, you know, very intrigued and positive.

• 31:32Speaker 01

And I'm, you know, as a founder, it's a cool, high-tech project. This is the thing that people have all been waiting to see. How many people talk about Optimus on my timeline every day? But this brought back my controversial take, maybe? When I first talked about Tesla Optimus and the whole idea of humanoid robots, that is now playing out, like, in real time, which is okay. Is a human-shaped robot the answer?

• 31:57David Imel?

  Here we go.

• 31:58Speaker 01

Or, or should each individual thing that you are applying the robot to be its own robot?

• 32:07David Imel?

Did you watch Hasan Minhaj's interview with Neil deGrasse Tyson that he did last week?

• 32:11Speaker 01

I just downloaded it to watch.

• 32:12David Imel?

  They had this exact conversation.

• 32:13Speaker 01

  Did they?

• 32:14David Imel?

  They did.

• 32:14Speaker 01

Oh, I'm excited then to watch this. I'm really, I am slightly, slightly away from center, towards each thing should be a robot.

• 32:23Andrew Manganelli?

This scenario right here, if that little laundry basket just had wheels and a catapult, it could drive itself from my room and just launch itself into this washing machine.

• 32:33Speaker 01

  That's exactly what I'm saying.

• 32:34Andrew Manganelli?

My biggest gripe with this is... It's loading a washing machine. Not a single person who does laundry is like, oh, I don't want to do laundry. And it's bad at the putting it in. It's like taking it out of the dryer and folding and putting everything away.

• 32:47Speaker 01

And to be fair, at CES, I have seen, although not with my own eyes, but I have seen coverage of robot that folds laundry out of the washer. And it's not like a human shaped robot. It's just the, the washing machine puts it in the dryer and then the dryer takes it out and folds and sorts it. And that's a different idea of a robot in your home.

• 33:08David Imel?

  Very cool. I like that.

• 33:09Speaker 01

So, yeah, I guess, you know, the argument typically with the human shaped robot is going to be it's, uh, it's got this general intelligence. It can see the world. It can do a whole bunch of things. It's versatile. We've built the world around the human shape. So you could put this human shaped robot in any situation. It can flip burgers. It can serve you food. It can go do, drive your car, pick up the groceries, do your laundry, can do everything for you in the world that exists today. I get that argument. I just think as far as specialized, efficient robots, instead of putting the human shaped robot in the car to drive it, a far more efficient solution to driving is that the car is the robot, if that makes sense.

• 33:47David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 33:48Speaker 01

So it's gonna play out. I'm just, you know, I'm fascinated by this video and the replies are kind of talking about both sides of this.

• 33:54Andrew Manganelli?

Can I show you what I imagined with his kids watching right there?

• 33:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 33:58Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Have you seen this video of this robot like malfunctioning at this trade show?

• 34:03Speaker 01

Yes, I have seen that. Yeah. There's been way more humanoid robots on my timeline.

• 34:07David Imel?

Breakdancing robot and then it passes it and then it falls over and freaks out.

• 34:10Andrew Manganelli?

Legs just start spinning like in circles and everyone starts backing up.

• 34:15David Imel?

I think as soon as the Optimus thing started getting built, every, every other company was like, it's time to ramp up, boys.

• 34:22Speaker 01

Yeah. Time to make humanoid shaped robots.

• 34:24David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 34:24Speaker 01

I, I would say I am, you know, if there's a spectrum of human shaped robots are the answer or human shaped robots are not the answer. I am like. Slightly on the side of general robot is probably not the far term solution.

• 34:40Andrew Manganelli?

My other thing is I'm so insanely skeptical of all of these because like Boston Dynamics has been doing this for so much longer than all of these places have and their robot looks like the Hulk compared to these.

• 34:52Speaker 01

  You mean Hyundai?

• 34:53Andrew Manganelli?

Hyundai, still sure, that's just even more proof that they have tons of funding also and like Atlas is gigantic and usually not doing anything as impressive as these.

• 35:03Speaker 01

Yeah, you know, the typical customer of one of these robots is not just like a person. It's typically a larger, it's a lot of money and a lot of investment to decide.

• 35:12Andrew Manganelli?

These want to be people robots.

• 35:13Speaker 01

Right, that's the future that people see is everyone has one of these in their home and maybe it does their laundry for you.

• 35:19David Imel?

All right, hot take. Okay, I think that, I know you're looking at me weird and I know you're scared, it's okay, it's not that, it's, it's, it's, okay, I'm hyping this up too much. My hot take is that I don't really want humanoid things walking around with us all the time because I would rather humans stick to the humanoid shape and that the robots stick to the robot shape. And, um, yeah.

• 35:43Andrew Manganelli?

  Why not both?

• 35:44David Imel?

Because I see the far reaching ends of the humanoid shaped robots and that's when people are gonna start putting like AI girlfriends in the human robots and then people will stop talking to each other altogether.

• 35:55Andrew Manganelli?

Bro, you have that right now on Twitter.

• 35:57David Imel?

Yeah, but that's not a, that's not a physical being.

• 36:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Yet.

• 36:01Speaker 01

Yeah, well, yeah, it depends on the person, I guess.

• 36:04Andrew Manganelli?

  Imagine if Grok was physical?

• 36:06Speaker 01

You can already have an AI girlfriend in a little box in your pocket.

• 36:08David Imel?

  Yeah, but it's not.

• 36:10Speaker 01

  But if it's human shaped.

• 36:11David Imel?

I don't want it to be human shaped and I just know that that's the end game for that. I just know it will, actually not even the end game, the beginning game. It'll happen very quickly and I don't want that.

• 36:19Speaker 01

  It'll, it'll happen too soon.

• 36:20David Imel?

  For our society.

• 36:21Speaker 01

  That's probably a fair take.

• 36:23David Imel?

  Thanks.

• 36:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Super fair.

• 36:25David Imel?

  It'll happen immediately.

• 36:27Speaker 01

All right, we got way more to talk about, including a new iPhone 17 Pro dummy caught in public, but before we get to that, we always take some quick breaks, so let's do that for some trivia.

• 36:42Speaker 02

Was the first one a yawn?

• 36:45Speaker 02

Guys, we just talked about a laundry robot for a while. And since this game of trivia, this question we're about to do, these, both of these questions this episode, in fact, are not going to be for points. And the reason they're not going to be for points is because last week we recorded a season finale trivia extravaganza. Let's go. And you, our lovely audience, will find out who won later this month. But yes, until we kick off the new season, actually, and then also later this month, we've got, I guess, this is coming out in August, right? Yeah, later this month, we've got some other special trivia stuff for you. So get ready for that.

• 37:21David Imel?

  Really?

• 37:22Speaker 02

Yes. Yeah, you were not in that meeting. Oops. We'll fill you in. You're going to be excited, trust me. And so will you at home, but David, you're going to be really excited. But guys, we've talked about a laundry robot for a while. So this is not for points. I wanted to do one of our special, kinda not really tech, this is not tech at all. Because laundry robot, reject modernity, embrace tradition, whatever. What? So this robot, right? The whole, the value proposition is like, it does your laundry, you do other things, right? But what traditional New Orleans dish was cooked on laundry day? Because it was such a hands-off thing to cook, you could do your laundry all day at the same time. Little flip-flop.

• 38:05David Imel?

I feel like I know this one.

• 38:06Speaker 02

Nice. I have a guess. Cool.

• 38:09David Imel?

There's two that I'm jumping between.

• 38:11Speaker 02

Well, I will only accept one.

• 38:13David Imel?

Dang. Well, I think I know the one.

• 38:16Speaker 01

Well, answers will be at the end, like usual. We'll be right back.

• 38:19Speaker 02

  Go Pelz.

• 38:33Speaker 01

• 40:45Speaker 01

All right, welcome back. We got to talk about this Twitter iPhone 17 Pro leak that just started sort of bubbling up. There's a picture that's probably hit your timeline, at least by now, of a guy caught in public with an iPhone 17 development model out in the wild. He's got a unskinned phone and he's got this like, you know, phone in a case, which, you know, typically is how employees have to test these phones without showing off the new design, which is top secret. And so it sort of blew up on Twitter. I don't think it's as big of a deal as people seem to be making it out to be.

• 41:22Andrew Manganelli?

If it was just this post, I don't think I would have put it in here, but we got this post and we got the Sony Dickinson, Sony Dixon model. So I was like, let's just put it all together because there's a couple interesting things. It makes the dummies seem more believable when we see this. This guy also has security, I think.

• 41:37Speaker 01

Yeah, I can barely tell that the one in public is the new one.

• 41:41Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, because it's got this case that conceals like the new camera bar thing.

• 41:44Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:45Andrew Manganelli?

Which we kind of all know is coming. So at this point, yeah, we see the new models and the dummies and they all have this camera bar, which is new for the iPhone 17 lineup, allegedly. And we also have colors, which are new for the iPhone 17 lineup and are also kind of interesting because didn't we talk about this last week?

• 42:01Speaker 01

  No, we didn't.

• 42:01Andrew Manganelli?

Well, no, last week I said...

• 42:04Speaker 01

You thought this was like the regular iPhone colors, but it turns out it's the Pros.

• 42:07Andrew Manganelli?

  No, that was the Pixels.

• 42:09Speaker 01

Oh, that was the Pixels. Wait, this is the same colors, though?

• 42:12Andrew Manganelli?

  No.

• 42:12Speaker 01

  The orange?

• 42:13Andrew Manganelli?

No, because the Pixel was [BLEEP].

• 42:15Speaker 01

  Right.

• 42:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Limoncello and a great limoncello.

• 42:17Speaker 01

  I forgot.

• 42:18Andrew Manganelli?

But I did last week say, these have to be the normal Pixel 10s because we all know pro phones aren't allowed to get good colors. And here we are with an orange, like bright orange iPhone Pro.

• 42:29Speaker 01

And yes, so the models are showing the Pro iPhones come in black, white, blue, like a darkish blue, and orange, which is new. I can't remember the last orange iPhones.

• 42:41Andrew Manganelli?

  10R.

• 42:42Speaker 01

SE. Oh, 10R. Yeah, it was peach. I don't think they call it a peach, but that's the color it was. And then the regular iPhones, the non-Pros, are black, white, starlight or whatever the sort of off-white version is, and then a barely blue.

• 42:55Andrew Manganelli?

Well, according to this, it's the 17 Air is black, white, starlight, blue, and then the 17 is black, white.

• 43:02Speaker 01

  Starlight's like the white gold.

• 43:03Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, like that. Then like a pinkish and like a light blue.

• 43:07Speaker 01

  So Cosmo and Wanda phones.

• 43:09David Imel?

  And then

• 43:10Andrew Manganelli?

Is that green or blue? I'm bad at colors.

• 43:12Speaker 02

The XR, they call it coral.

• 43:15Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 43:15Speaker 02

  It's like orangish, right?

• 43:16David Imel?

Yeah. Yeah. Um, well, this comes after Samsung released a press release about how Z Fold 7 customers are actually buying the blue phone for once. Uh, in the Z Fold press release, it says, while black is typically the preferred option amongst Z Fold customers, blue shadow received nearly half of all pre-orders. Furthermore, coral red exceeded expectations, making up nearly 25% of pre-orders of the Flip 7. So it seems like colorful phones are making a comeback and maybe that's why these companies are actually starting to use. But also this like bright orange is kind of insane for Apple.

• 43:51Andrew Manganelli?

  It's sweet.

• 43:52David Imel?

  If this is real.

• 43:53Andrew Manganelli?

Especially on Pro. Have, correct me if I'm wrong, but like the models never do a good job at getting when the pros usually have like a frosted to them. So like, is there a chance this could be a little frosted and a bit more muted than this?

• 44:05Speaker 01

Uh, I think it's kind of accurate where the body is mostly frosted on the Pros and then the camera visor is glossy.

• 44:13David Imel?

  That's what it looks like.

• 44:14Speaker 01

And then on the non-pros, it could be the other way around.

• 44:17David Imel?

You know what this looks like? This looks like liquid glass. The frosted, the like, the glossy camera bar kind of looks like one of those liquid glass tiles.

• 44:26Andrew Manganelli?

It's always kind of in that where it's basically clear and taking the color from the bottom, but since it's now twice as large.

• 44:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 44:32Andrew Manganelli?

It's way more like it. Yeah.

• 44:34David Imel?

Um, also on the Pros and on the Air, they put the flash on the right side. So that's the reason that the camera bar is so big. Um, yeah, it's very interesting. I wonder if this ends up being real.

• 44:47Andrew Manganelli?

I want to potentially toot my own horn because I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure I said this when we were talking about where does the air fall in the lineup? And this looks like it's replacing the 17 plus.

• 45:00David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Right?

• 45:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:02Andrew Manganelli?

  I think I said that.

• 45:03David Imel?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 45:03Andrew Manganelli?

I think that's where I took it as. And I think it makes the most sense here.

• 45:07David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:08Andrew Manganelli?

It's like bigger, but one less camera. So you're getting more and less at the same time.

• 45:12David Imel?

Right. Which is probably going to incentivize people to potentially buy the 17 if they don't want, you know?

• 45:17Speaker 01

Or just go to the Pro.

• 45:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:19Andrew Manganelli?

I think this is just like the part in their lineup they're the most confused about and they're just gonna keep throwing things until it sticks because it was mini, then it was plus, now it's air.

• 45:27David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:27Andrew Manganelli?

We'll see if this lasts two years also and then gets changed into something completely different.

• 45:31David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:31Speaker 04

If this is the actual lineup this leak, I think it's like one of the more exciting ones that Apple has had in a long time.

• 45:39David Imel?

  Just because of the colors?

• 45:40Speaker 04

Yeah, just the colors and even like the camera bumps, like there's actual differentiation between them now.

• 45:45Andrew Manganelli?

This is the best iPhone thumbnail coming up where like the, all the prophones are very different. The, the air is very different, the colors are like, this is, I can look at an iPhone and be like, okay, we're in this year's lineup. That's not.

• 45:58David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 45:59Andrew Manganelli?

  Potentially the last three years.

• 46:00David Imel?

The new pics, like the alleged Pixel 10 looks, in my opinion, much nicer than the alleged iPhone 17 or 26. You think they're gonna call it iPhone 26?

• 46:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh. I don't think so.

• 46:14Speaker 01

Well, they didn't change any hard, I guess they haven't announced any hardware.

• 46:16David Imel?

Did that to align with the years on the S20.

• 46:18Speaker 01

No, you're right, they did. Uh, so Apple did it with all their software at WWDC. Would they do it with the hardware too? I don't, I don't know. It's not out of the question because they did skip all the numbers for the software.

• 46:32Andrew Manganelli?

Only did it with software because all the software, like you probably have things with multiple, like most other Apple products don't have numbers associated with them. They're just like the year of it. Yeah, but then just like the MacBook Pro.

• 46:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 46:45Andrew Manganelli?

iPad doesn't have like, iPads, it's usually based on more like the chip of the software and like.

• 46:51David Imel?

  That's true.

• 46:51Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. What if they just start doing, I think it'll be 17.

• 46:53Speaker 04

Bring in the MacBook, what if they're just like iPhone 2025? Like they just start putting the year in there.

• 46:59Andrew Manganelli?

  I guess that would be.

• 47:00Speaker 01

But if it's gonna launch with iOS 2026.

• 47:03David Imel?

They'll do it next year. This is why I said the card thing was kind of complicated.

• 47:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:07David Imel?

  And confusing.

• 47:08Speaker 01

2026 iPhone, coming in September 2025.

• 47:11Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 47:12Speaker 01

There you go. I'm also disappointed my Cosmo and Wanda phone comment didn't get more love.

• 47:17Andrew Manganelli?

  I still think it's blue, that's why.

• 47:19Speaker 01

  Wait, no, these?

• 47:20David Imel?

  That's blue.

• 47:21Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, whoa, wait, you have a different picture.

• 47:23Speaker 01

  This is the Sunny Dixon.

• 47:24Andrew Manganelli?

I'm looking in our thing, you have a blue and a green. The one I'm looking at only has blue and pink, so that's why you didn't get a laugh, cuz I was like, wow, moron, have you ever seen Cosmo and Wanda?

• 47:33Speaker 01

  This is the Sunny Dixon.

• 47:35Andrew Manganelli?

David and I were looking at the same photo, which doesn't have a green.

• 47:39David Imel?

Can we just do that, is my blue, your blue thing?

• 47:43Speaker 01

Yeah, so yeah, there's a pink and a green.

• 47:45Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay.

• 47:45Speaker 01

Hence my comment. Alright, well, I guess we'll see very soon.

• 47:49Andrew Manganelli?

I have one more iPhone question.

• 47:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 47:51Andrew Manganelli?

Alice, what's your battery percentage at?

• 47:55Speaker 02

Someone asked me that in person while I was in LA.

• 47:59Speaker 01

I thought I would have asked.

• 48:00Andrew Manganelli?

We forgot last week and we actually had multiple comments asking what his battery percentage was.

• 48:05Speaker 02

We remembered this week. Guys, it's not too bad today. I have not charged my phone yet today. Now we're at 66%.

• 48:12Speaker 01

  Pretty good.

• 48:15Speaker 02

Turned off the charger, probably like.

• 48:17Speaker 01

• 48:18Andrew Manganelli?

  It's still plugged in.

• 48:21Speaker 02

  My, uh, yeah.

• 48:22Andrew Manganelli?

  Three hours.

• 48:23Speaker 01

  It's not that bad.

• 48:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:25Andrew Manganelli?

  Okay. Nine hour battery.

• 48:27Speaker 02

It does die so fast that I was traveling with an Anchor MagSafe portable battery thing. And when I'm using the phone and MagSafe charging, the battery life just stays the same.

• 48:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's really funny.

• 48:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 48:43Speaker 01

Should try the Ridge one, see if you get any more speed out of it.

• 48:45Speaker 02

  I should, no, I should, I should.

• 48:47Speaker 01

Yeah. Alright, so actually, speaking of.

• 48:50Speaker 02

Channel sponsor, I should try the channel sponsor Ridge.

• 48:53Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 48:53Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 48:54Speaker 01

Speaking of the channel sponsor Ridge one, uh, there is a rumor of the Pixel 10, including Chi 10 with magnets.

• 49:01Andrew Manganelli?

  Chi 10?

• 49:02Speaker 01

  Sorry, Pixel 10. Pixel 10.

• 49:06Andrew Manganelli?

It's just like a bolt of lightning across there, like, oh shit, your phone is charged.

• 49:11Speaker 01

There's rumors of the Pixel 10 having Qi 2 with the magnets built in.

• 49:16David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 49:16Speaker 01

Which I think would be awesome.

• 49:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 49:18Speaker 01

Uh, because that would mean you could use MagSafe accessories. You can use any of these magnetic things that just slap onto the back of the phone. Without a case.

• 49:26David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 49:26Speaker 01

I'm a, I'm a no case guy. I'll throw skin on my phone sometimes, but I don't usually have a case on my phone. So this is exciting for me.

• 49:32Andrew Manganelli?

I just thought of a reason why they should be implementing Qi 2 with magnets. Sorry. And then you can actually explain the good part of this.

• 49:37David Imel?

  Okay.

• 49:38Andrew Manganelli?

Every phone manufacturer should do this because the chance of people then breaking their phones and having to pay that manufacturer to fix it is far increased. Cause now you don't, cause then you have the magnets in the phone and you don't have to buy a case.

• 49:49David Imel?

  Oh, you mean because?

• 49:50Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 49:50David Imel?

  Right.

• 49:51Andrew Manganelli?

Why wouldn't they all have, that's, Apple's ahead of its time.

• 49:53David Imel?

Well, but Apple also sells MagSafe cases.

• 49:56Andrew Manganelli?

  True.

• 49:56David Imel?

Add magnets to the case too.

• 49:58Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, but you only have the option to go no case with MagSafe if the magnets are built in.

• 50:04David Imel?

Unless you get a case that has magnets in it, like the iPhone cases.

• 50:08Andrew Manganelli?

Well, yeah, but then it's not a phone with no case. Cause it has a case.

• 50:11David Imel?

  Well, yeah, true. Sure.

• 50:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 50:14Andrew Manganelli?

It was a bet. Go on, explain the rest of it.

• 50:17David Imel?

Okay. Um, just to explain this, so like, I don't know if it was earlier this year or late last year, the Qi 2 standard got released, which is the, basically Apple donated, donated. A bunch of magnetic standards to the Wireless Power Consortium, which then implemented the Qi 2 standard, which we've been waiting for, for a very long time. I think it actually was probably last year. But effectively every phone that has Qi 2 is going to have magnets in it now, similar to MagSafe, which is very cool because MagSafe is probably one of the coolest phone innovations, most helpful phone innovations in a very long time. Then we found out that the Wireless Power Consortium separated out Qi 2 into Qi 2 and Qi 2 Ready.

• 51:00David Imel?

Qi 2 Ready is basically saying that if you put a case on it that has the magnets in it. And I'm assuming it has a little micro, microcontroller in it that says this is a Qi 2 Ready case. It'll, you know, charge with Qi 2 and it'll stick to it and stuff. That made us very sad because I don't, I, I run caseless. Uh, I don't want to have to put my phone in a case just to use MagSafe accessories. I think that's lame and you can already do that with like a $3 magnet that you can find, you know, on Amazon or whatever. Uh, so we were kind of thinking, oh no, of course now Google's just gonna do like C2 ready or whatever.

• 51:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 51:38David Imel?

But now there's a very, very, very strong chance that the Pixel is going to have official C2. This comes from a leak from Evan Blass. Uh, he has tweeted, "Pictures of the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro Fold alongside a new obsidian color for the Pixel Buds Pro 2 and the Pixel Watch 4." But the most interesting thing is that one of the leaked images that he shared showed the Pixel 2 with a new Pixel Snap Wireless Charger attached to it, which looks very, very similar to a MagSafe Puck, but with more rounded edges, basically, instead of being like sharp. And, uh, that effectively confirms that it has the magnets built inside the phone. Because the charger is like stuck directly to the phone.

• 52:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:22David Imel?

  So.

• 52:23Speaker 01

  Yes, please.

• 52:23David Imel?

That's very, very exciting. We've been wanting this.

• 52:26Speaker 04

I would love this. I've been waiting for it for so long. I keep having to put my phone in a case that I do not want to use just because MagSafe is like that irreplaceable to me.

• 52:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 52:36Speaker 04

And now with it being built into the phone.

• 52:38David Imel?

Yeah. Basically, a little. You go ahead.

• 52:41Speaker 01

Nah, I'm a little nervous. I might get let down by this Pixel. It's lining up to be such a great phone and I'm already like mentally going like, yeah, this is, this feels like it's probably gonna be my next phone. And then.

• 52:51Speaker 04

I pretty much have it on preorder already.

• 52:53David Imel?

Well, you know, I was just talking to Ellis in the car this morning about this. Uh, but they, I at first was kind of disappointed that they weren't going really flashy because it's the 10th one and I thought, you know, they did do something big like the iPhone 10 was a very different type of iPhone, very revolutionary. Uh, but considering their market share has been rising fairly significantly over the last like two to three years, this exact current design of Pixel, which we've had effectively since Pixel 7, where it's got the camera bar, but it's rounded.

• 53:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:26David Imel?

Um, I think that that's very popular and people are starting to buy the phone and their, their average sales have been going up and up and up.

• 53:33Speaker 01

There's enough momentum that they don't want to shake it up.

• 53:35David Imel?

I think they don't want to shake it up too much. I think they just want to make it better. They want to make it, but it is kind of like jewelry. And this is why I said that I think that the Pixel 10 this year actually looks quite a bit better than the iPhone 17, if the rumors are all true, the renders are all true.

• 53:50Speaker 01

  We'll see.

• 53:50David Imel?

Yeah, so it'd be very cool to get that.

• 53:52Speaker 04

If the renders are true, then the Pixel 9 looks better than this year's iPhone.

• 53:58David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 53:59Andrew Manganelli?

  That's crazy.

• 54:00David Imel?

Yeah. Yeah. Um, but speaking of pixel, very quickly, this is kind of a little quick hit. There is this ren- uh, there's a concept of these pixel over ear headphones that someone made on Behance.

• 54:12Andrew Manganelli?

  That looks so good.

• 54:13David Imel?

  And they look.

• 54:13Andrew Manganelli?

  This is so good.

• 54:14David Imel?

  They look so, so good.

• 54:17Speaker 04

We don't often tell you to pull over in your car if you're listening to this and like pull up the video and watch what we're about to talk about, but you guys need to see this.

• 54:25David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 54:25Speaker 04

  These headphones look amazing.

• 54:26David Imel?

So someone made this concept that's supposed to compete directly with like AirPods Pro. Um, but it's, or AirPods Max, sorry. But it is so Google in every possible way. Like I could see this person being the lead designer at Google for headphones. Um, they look so good. It's hard to describe them. They sort of have this telescoping band that wraps around the ear cups and it is, you know, metal. And then they have the same sort of like pixel gloss, uh, finish and color. And then they have a few buttons that are like the bright orange color to kind of like accent it.

• 55:00Andrew Manganelli?

This, this is interesting in that ear cup design is so wild talking this much about, uh, like just a design that probably isn't even gonna be real, but it's just looks so good. But like, do you know how the, um, nothing ear headphones were like, uh, squircle and then a circle in the middle? I guess that was like an oval in the middle of it.

• 55:18David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 55:18Andrew Manganelli?

This is a way cooler and like sleek version of that. This like nice matte, like beige with a circle then just like melts into. Yeah, the like square ear cup. And then the buttons are on the bottom of that circular, like beveled into it. Oh my goodness. It looks so good. I would buy these.

• 55:35David Imel?

He even has renders of it on like someone's head and they look freaking amazing.

• 55:39Speaker 04

David said that he wanted to talk about this and I was so hyped because I specifically want to beg Google to hire him and make this real. Hire this guy.

• 55:48David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 55:49Andrew Manganelli?

Sidhant, I think is, I'm not a hundred percent sure on pronunciation. We'll put it in the show notes, but like.

• 55:54David Imel?

  These are amazing.

• 55:55Speaker 01

There are some things, tiny things I would change, but I mostly like them a lot.

• 56:00Andrew Manganelli?

  It's got a headphone jack.

• 56:01David Imel?

You don't want the power button?

• 56:02Speaker 01

So there's, I think two things I would change. No, I like power button.

• 56:05Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, the orange.

• 56:06Speaker 01

The chrome, the chrome arm on them would get like very fingerprinty. So I'd probably want that to be matte maybe. I don't mind it. It looks really cool and it's clean. That's obviously great. The other thing is I've been using the Sony W, WH 1000 XM6s and.

• 56:24Speaker 01

Just, just like the touch control on the outside to go next song, previous song, swiping on the side of the headphones sucks every time. Every pair of headphones that does that sucks. And it reminded me of the Surface headphones. You remember those?

• 56:36David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 56:37Speaker 01

Where you had the dial, the ring, we could change volume and move. I kind of want a little bit more of that on these. So I see, there looks like a volume rocker on these headphones. I want like a next song and a previous song without having to swipe on the side of them.

• 56:50David Imel?

It is kind of sad because Microsoft has effectively killed a lot of that product ecosystem. But during the lifecycle of the Surface product ecosystem, when it was at its peak, when they had the Surface Studio and they had the Surface headphones, they, that dial was sort of a fundamental kind of object because they had the dial for the Surface Studio, which was like this wireless puck that you could use for drawing and drafting and stuff. And they integrated that same design into the headphones so that it felt very cohesive.

• 57:17Speaker 01

  That's great.

• 57:18David Imel?

So yeah, Google could, Google could theoretically.

• 57:20Andrew Manganelli?

  Do you remember Surface buds?

• 57:23David Imel?

Yeah, those were the worst. That, those.

• 57:26Andrew Manganelli?

Do you remember why it was that big disk and what the feature was for it? So you could swipe in PowerPoint on your earbuds?

• 57:34Speaker 01

I remember reading at like press release.

• 57:36Andrew Manganelli?

They showed us that at Microsoft and we all just went, uh, cool.

• 57:41David Imel?

Also, those were the most uncomfortable earbuds I've ever worn. They were the hardest plastic. Like they did not mold to your ears at all. They were so hard. It was.

• 57:52Speaker 01

  But it's a sacrifice.

• 57:53David Imel?

  So bad.

• 57:53Speaker 01

You'd be willing to make to be able to move to the next slide.

• 57:56David Imel?

Why are you even wearing earbuds while you're talking, while you're talking to people giving a presentation?

• 58:00Speaker 01

So you can be discreet about it. Like, Sam, if you look at the next slide here.

• 58:04David Imel?

  Every time you're just like.

• 58:08David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 58:09Andrew Manganelli?

  It was, those were bad.

• 58:10David Imel?

That was bad. They, um, they make clickers for that, just so you know.

• 58:14Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah, but I agree with you. I'm anti swipe on any headphones. I want a physical button because I hate just like adjusting in your ear and now the volume and the song has switched and I'd be all.

• 58:24Speaker 01

You know what I've settled into? Because all these headphones have autoplay pause when you take them off.

• 58:28David Imel?

  I hate that.

• 58:29Speaker 01

You know, the, I've started just using it for everything. When I'm on, especially when I'm on a plane. You know, you can do the like cup thing for some of them where you can take one ear back or you could like hit the button to play pause. Literally if someone walks up to me, I just. The music stops, whatever I was doing is gonna pause.

• 58:44David Imel?

The Sony ones, though, you can put one hand over one of the ear cups.

• 58:47Speaker 01

Yeah, but then you look like a douche.

• 58:49David Imel?

  This.

• 58:49Speaker 01

  That's true. I just don't like that.

• 58:51David Imel?

  It looks so rude.

• 58:52Speaker 04

  Hey, David.

• 58:52Speaker 01

I feel like... It just looks weird.

• 58:54Speaker 04

And then mid-conversation, your hand just like comes off and you start listening to music again.

• 58:59David Imel?

  It is a pretty obvious.

• 59:00Speaker 04

  Your eyes glaze over.

• 59:02David Imel?

Yeah, I feel like I intuitively understand what's happening when you do that, though.

• 59:06Speaker 04

No, you get it. It just makes you look like a jerk. Cause you're like, you're not important enough for me to take off my headphones.

• 59:11David Imel?

I also haven't worn over-ear headphones in like a really long time.

• 59:14Speaker 04

But if these Google ones are out.

• 59:16Speaker 01

I've just been on so many flights lately that I've just gotten so fed up and I've just taken them off every time. That's just my...

• 59:21David Imel?

  Really?

• 59:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:22Speaker 04

Speaking of fed up, the Fediverse corner this week.

• 59:25David Imel?

  A baby!

• 59:26Speaker 04

Would have been so sick right there with that, but we don't have one, but maybe.

• 59:29David Imel?

  That's funny, that's true.

• 59:30Speaker 01

You know what we do have?

• 59:32David Imel?

  Trivia. Is this trivia federated?

• 59:36Speaker 04

Trivia! It is not federated, but...

• 59:38David Imel?

  Wait, BitChat.

• 59:40Speaker 04

  No, that's not federated, though.

• 59:42David Imel?

  I know.

• 59:42Speaker 04

  Okay. Anyway.

• 59:44David Imel?

  Anyway.

• 59:45Speaker 04

Let's keep it classic. So, IP ratings, those are a thing. The Microsoft Zune had a what IP rating?

• 59:52Speaker 01

  The original?

• 59:52Speaker 04

The original Microsoft Zune. That is the question.

• 59:56Speaker 01

  It had an IP rating?

• 59:57David Imel?

  Is that a trick question?

• 59:58Speaker 01

  It had an IP rating.

• 1:00:00Speaker 04

That's the question. Like, what was the IP rating of the Microsoft Zune?

• 1:00:04David Imel?

  Wow. 67.

• 1:00:06Speaker 01

What was its Ingress protection rating?

• 1:00:12Speaker 01

I'm gonna have to think about that one.

• 1:00:14Speaker 04

  Ingress.

• 1:00:14Speaker 01

I don't really remember the original Zune very well. I had the Zune HD, which was also not very memorable, but...

• 1:00:20Speaker 04

I had the Zune Pro Max.

• 1:00:21David Imel?

I thought the Zune HD was like the famous one.

• 1:00:24Speaker 01

The Zune HD was awesome, I just don't think it was particularly IP rated either.

• 1:00:27David Imel?

  Particularly IP rated?

• 1:00:29Speaker 01

I have no clue what the answer is.

• 1:00:30David Imel?

  Neither are OnePlus phones.

• 1:00:31Speaker 01

We'll think about this one for a while. Answer's at the end. We'll be right back.

• 1:00:35David Imel?

  Deep cut.

• 1:00:48Speaker 01

Support for the show comes from Jira by Atlassian. So AI is only as useful as the context it has to work from. But when that context is scattered across tools like threads and DMs, that means your team and your AI agents end up flying kind of blind. That's the problem Jira solves. What's the goal tied to your project? What got decided last week in Slack? Atlassian's teamwork graph pulls all of these pieces together from Jira, Confluence, Slack, GitHub, and more, so nothing falls through the cracks. With Jira, you can actually share that context with the AI agents you already use, like Claude, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot. Assign them work directly or connect your agents through MCP. Spend less time digging through endless links and DMs, less time chasing down what got decided and by who, and more time actually shipping. Learn more at jira.com.

• 1:02:32David Imel?

Welcome back, everybody, to the Waveform Podcast. We're your hosts. I know I do this every time. I'm Adam. Okay, uh, we, you may have heard a few months ago, I believe, that Eric Minchikovsky, who was the guy that invented Beeper, who we did a whole thing on, and then Beeper is now part of Automatic, and then I went to an Automatic party about Beeper, and then it was weird. The guy, Eric Minchikovsky, uh, basically was able to get back all of the rights from Google, because Pebble was sold to Fitbit, and then Fitbit was sold to Google, and so Google eventually had all the rights to Pebble.

• 1:03:08Andrew Manganelli?

One step also in between here is, he already, like, we talked about this a little while ago, he was relaunching Pebble, but he had to call it Core Design.

• 1:03:15David Imel?

Right, so, yeah, I was getting there.

• 1:03:17Andrew Manganelli?

  Oh, sorry.

• 1:03:17David Imel?

So he was able to get Google to release all the copyright for the Pebble hardware stuff. So he was re, he decided he wanted to relaunch it, because now, you know, Pebble was like one of the first smartwatches, but now...

• 1:03:30Speaker 01

I'm impressed that he got Google to do that.

• 1:03:32David Imel?

Yeah, I know, they were like, "Yeah, I guess we don't, we're not really doing anything with it."

• 1:03:35Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:03:35David Imel?

Yeah, so, I think they open sourced it. Yeah, so, uh, yeah, now he's making it again. It was one of the first smartwatches, and now everyone feels like they have too much of their phone throwing out, throwing things at them all the time, so they want less stuff, and Pebble, because it was an early smartwatch, is less stuff. It is also not quite E Ink, I don't think, um...

• 1:03:56Andrew Manganelli?

  It's E Paper.

• 1:03:57David Imel?

  E Paper. But, anyway...

• 1:04:00Andrew Manganelli?

One of them is, right? The other one is...

• 1:04:02David Imel?

  At least they're both...

• 1:04:03Andrew Manganelli?

  They both are, okay.

• 1:04:04David Imel?

He needed to call it Core Devices, because he did not have the right to the Pebble name.

• 1:04:09Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:04:09David Imel?

Which was very funny, because one of them used to be called the Pebble 2 Duo, and then now it was called the Core 2 Duo, which was an old Intel processor. Uh, but, very recently, as of, I believe, this week, he was actually able to get the Pebble name back, so officially, it is now Pebble again.

• 1:04:28Speaker 01

Multiple people in this office are super excited about this.

• 1:04:31David Imel?

Yeah, there are dozens of us.

• 1:04:33Speaker 01

  Alex is already...

• 1:04:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Isn't weird that...

• 1:04:35Speaker 01

  ...trying to order.

• 1:04:36David Imel?

I mean, I wanna get one.

• 1:04:37Andrew Manganelli?

  They're pretty sick.

• 1:04:38Speaker 01

That's the most shocking thing to me, is that they, Google's like, "Sure, you can just ha," like, why did they even, I guess...

• 1:04:42David Imel?

I think they were just not planning on doing anything with it, so they open sourced it.

• 1:04:45Speaker 01

  Yeah, but still.

• 1:04:46David Imel?

  I mean, they own it.

• 1:04:47Speaker 01

  Not anymore.

• 1:04:48David Imel?

I mean, when they did own it, I just feel like, I'm surprised that a company like Google...

• 1:04:51Speaker 01

  Gave it away for free.

• 1:04:52David Imel?

Would just give that away for free.

• 1:04:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:54David Imel?

And go through the work to release...

• 1:04:55Andrew Manganelli?

You're talking about the hardware or the name?

• 1:04:56David Imel?

  Both.

• 1:04:57Speaker 01

  Both.

• 1:04:57Andrew Manganelli?

  True.

• 1:04:58David Imel?

That's, that's all of what Pebble is.

• 1:05:01Andrew Manganelli?

This will come back and bite us, and we don't know how yet. He did say, like... I commend him for this blog post because this is like the, this is how every update on like a project should be ever. It is a simple, no bells and whistles, very text-based blog post.

• 1:05:15David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:16Andrew Manganelli?

That's just like, listen, TLDR at the top, here's the good things, here's the bad things, read about it quickly. You could read this whole blog post in less than 10 minutes and know everything you need to know about these watches.

• 1:05:26David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:27Andrew Manganelli?

And have DS summarize it for me. But he opens it up with, we've been able to recover the trademark for Pebble. Honestly, I wasn't expecting it to work out so easily.

• 1:05:33David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:34Andrew Manganelli?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:35David Imel?

  I would not either.

• 1:05:36Speaker 02

Can I share my favorite part about the Pebble re-launch? As someone who was obsessed with the Pebble when it came out and was too young to like have enough money to buy one and now, now I'm an adult, I can. All of the repo marketplace for all of the original Pebble watch faces and apps and stuff is still up. And these new Core Pebbles, since they're running just an updated version of the OS, it all still works.

• 1:06:02David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:02Speaker 02

Assuming that the web services are still up. So like, these watches are dropping with like thousands of apps and thousands of watch faces and like, it's, you'll get to immediately dive into like this super cool, I don't know, I am just.

• 1:06:15Andrew Manganelli?

Yeah. Well, they also, and they're not called Core anymore. They just are called Pebble Time 2 now and.

• 1:06:20David Imel?

Pebble Core 2 Duo and Pebble Core.

• 1:06:22Speaker 02

Yeah, the Core is in the model name.

• 1:06:23David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:24Andrew Manganelli?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:06:24David Imel?

  Yes.

• 1:06:25Andrew Manganelli?

Well, at least it is on the website. At the bottom. No, the website actually is not even updated or, wait, hold on, he has it in here. It said it right at the top. It is now called the.

• 1:06:35David Imel?

  Oh, this is the.

• 1:06:35Andrew Manganelli?

It's called the Pebble 2 Duo and the Pebble Time 2. There's no Core in it. They crossed out Core.

• 1:06:40David Imel?

Yeah. I'm still on the re-Pebble website.

• 1:06:42Speaker 02

  Yeah, on, yeah, okay, sweet.

• 1:06:44Andrew Manganelli?

Oh, no, Pebble, it's just called Pebble now. He got.

• 1:06:46Speaker 02

I am so excited, you guys, this is so exciting.

• 1:06:50David Imel?

Oh, but when you go to pebble.com, it goes to store.google.com.

• 1:06:54Andrew Manganelli?

He's gotta, he gotta buy that.

• 1:06:55David Imel?

Well, even. I guess he doesn't have the domain, he just has the name.

• 1:06:58Andrew Manganelli?

  That's funny.

• 1:06:59David Imel?

  Interesting.

• 1:07:00Andrew Manganelli?

Even in the I want one, it's still called Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Time. He even says in the blog post, I've been calling it Core for so long, I'm gonna mess that up. And there's like four instances in the blog post where he calls it the old name.

• 1:07:11David Imel?

  Yeah, that's funny.

• 1:07:12Andrew Manganelli?

  But I'm excited.

• 1:07:14David Imel?

  Very cool.

• 1:07:14Andrew Manganelli?

Sweet. This is the farthest away from my Garmin watch I feel like it could ever be and I kind of love it.

• 1:07:22David Imel?

Yeah. This is what I, you know, I don't like smartwatches in general and so being able to have something that's like. Sort of a smart watch, but also really dumb, but also has really good battery life, but also looks kinda weird.

• 1:07:34Speaker 02

  And has great watch faces.

• 1:07:36David Imel?

Yeah, I'm kind of excited about that.

• 1:07:37Speaker 02

David, I've gone full circle with you. When I met, I was exclusively like a analog watch guy.

• 1:07:42David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:42Speaker 02

And you were a smart watch person.

• 1:07:44David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:44Speaker 02

And then I watched you get into analog and digital watches. And then I got my first Apple Watch and fell in love.

• 1:07:49David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:49Speaker 02

And exclusively wore that for years.

• 1:07:51David Imel?

And now we're both gonna merge.

• 1:07:53Speaker 02

  I'm back.

• 1:07:54David Imel?

  Oh.

• 1:07:54Speaker 02

I've stopped dailying the, I took a selfie a few weeks ago, I think I mentioned, I took a selfie. And I'm a pretty little guy. And I was just horrified.

• 1:08:04David Imel?

  Do you have an Ultra?

• 1:08:05Speaker 02

Yeah, I have an, or I have, I was testing the office's Ultra 1.

• 1:08:09David Imel?

Yeah, we're gonna meet in the middle with an ePaper watch.

• 1:08:13Speaker 02

  Yeah. Yes.

• 1:08:14David Imel?

It's gonna be fun. Alright, I have two small stories that I want to talk about very quickly. YouTube Jump Ahead is coming to TVs. I don't know if you guys know this feature. I use this feature all the time.

• 1:08:24Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 1:08:24David Imel?

I feel a little bit bad because I know it just skips the sponsor, basically. No one uses that feature on our podcast, so it's fine. That's true.

• 1:08:30Andrew Manganelli?

Don't feel bad about skipping those sponsors because no sponsor marketing agency is smart enough to understand that that view's not going to them.

• 1:08:37Speaker 02

  Andrew, Andrew, our sponsors.

• 1:08:38David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:39Andrew Manganelli?

We love our, I mean, everyone watches ours.

• 1:08:41David Imel?

  That's true. Nobody skips.

• 1:08:42Andrew Manganelli?

That's why we make Ellis do them.

• 1:08:43David Imel?

Yeah. So that's coming to TVs, which is very cool, because now when I watch on my projector, because I often will sit in my bed and watch some stuff on my projector in the evenings.

• 1:08:52Speaker 02

  Nice.

• 1:08:53David Imel?

  Quite nice.

• 1:08:53Speaker 02

Can I, can I do this next one?

• 1:08:55David Imel?

  Sure.

• 1:08:55Speaker 02

Because the guy who made the video that you wanted to talk about was one of the YouTubers I recommended in our waveform recommendation game.

• 1:09:03David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:09:03Speaker 02

  So long ago.

• 1:09:04David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:05Speaker 02

  Ben Jordan.

• 1:09:06David Imel?

Yeah, he made that like driverless cars will never work video.

• 1:09:09Speaker 02

He made, he made the really good driverless car video. He's made a, he does this really goofy thing where he oscillates between like really serious stuff, like the world is, is a scary place right now video. And then he'll do this video, which is called.

• 1:09:23David Imel?

Well, I don't, yeah, wait, I have to bring up the actual name.

• 1:09:25Speaker 02

  It's called, I think it's called, I downloaded a PNG to a bird.

• 1:09:29Andrew Manganelli?

Saved a PNG to a bird.

• 1:09:30Speaker 02

  I saved a PNG to a bird.

• 1:09:32David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:33Speaker 02

And it's incredible. It's where he converts a PNG to sound.

• 1:09:39David Imel?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:39Speaker 02

Gives that. Teaches a bird to sing that sound, records that bird in another location, and then re-converts it into a distorted version of a P N G.

• 1:09:48David Imel?

Yeah, well, it was very fun. You should go watch this video. It's very good. This guy's like an, like an audio engineer who is-

• 1:09:54Speaker 02

  He's a musician.

• 1:09:55David Imel?

Yeah, he's like a musician. And if you go back on his YouTube channel, most of his content was like music content. And then the last like couple of years, he's just started doing like wild stuff and it's like really, really good.

• 1:10:06Speaker 02

  He's amazing.

• 1:10:07David Imel?

  Yeah, he's very good.

• 1:10:07Speaker 02

He's one of those people that was like, it's funny that you did anything else before being a YouTuber, because you were like, kind of made to do it.

• 1:10:14David Imel?

Yeah, because he has, he's got that perfect mix of like, the video quality is not like insanely good. He's just like setting up wherever he can, whatever, but the, what he's actually doing is like so interesting and scientific and smart and cool.

• 1:10:26Speaker 01

  That's what matters.

• 1:10:27David Imel?

Yeah, it's, it's very like Tom Scott core in a lot of ways.

• 1:10:31Speaker 02

You would really like this channel a lot. He's able, yeah.

• 1:10:34David Imel?

Yeah. So what was funny about this is that he went to basically teach this cockatoo, I think it's called, is it called a cockatoo?

• 1:10:42Speaker 02

  It's a bird.

• 1:10:43David Imel?

  Yeah. That can repeat things.

• 1:10:46Speaker 01

Do you have birds? I got birds, boy.

• 1:10:49David Imel?

That was Ben Jordan, actually. We just sound very similar. He plays the sound for the bird, but he doesn't hear it actually repeat it. And so it's repeating all these other sounds, but he's recording the whole thing and he's like, well, guess it didn't repeat the sound that I wanted to record. And then he goes home and he's just like looking at the waveform and he's like, wait, and he sees a picture. Frequency, right? Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:11:08Speaker 02

  I believe it's a spectrogram. I can't quite remember from the video.

• 1:11:11David Imel?

Well, he, the way that he like made the sound was he like drew the sound in some software and it created the sound and then he played that. And he didn't hear the bird make the sound, but he was recording the whole interaction and he goes home and he just like throws the audio on the spectrogram or whatever, and he randomly sees the photo of the bird that he had drawn. And then he, there was a section where the bird just, you know, did the sound, but just slowly and quietly.

• 1:11:34Speaker 02

That's cool. Ben Jordan, we'd love to, uh, we'd love to meet you sometime. We could, we could talk audio and-

• 1:11:38David Imel?

Yeah. This guy, I was like, this guy would be Ellis's best friend.

• 1:11:42Speaker 02

I think, I think me and Mr. Jordan would be quite, quite good friends.

• 1:11:45David Imel?

Yeah, so, all right. Well, with that, I think that we should answer more questions, actually ask more questions. Did we do a second trivia question?

• 1:11:57Speaker 02

I guess we should answer more questions and it's not for points.

• 1:12:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:12:03Speaker 02

Guys, question number one, throwing it back to New Orleans, go Pels, go Saints. I'm not actually a fan of either of those teams, but today I am. Uh oh. The great city of New Orleans. Guys, instead of having a robot do your laundry so you could do other stuff, what classic New Orleans dish was traditionally made on wash day, Monday, so that you could wash your clothes while these cooked without you touching them? Can I guess two things?

• 1:12:27Speaker 04

  I am between two.

• 1:12:28Speaker 02

This is like the worst phrased question I've ever given you. No, but I understand. Apologize for like, I know, but I was thinking the whole episode, like when I read it for the first time, like earlier in the episode, like what a mishmash word salad of nonsense.

• 1:12:40Speaker 04

I just picked the one that I'm sure I spelled right. The other one's-

• 1:12:42Speaker 02

Then we have the same answer.

• 1:12:45Speaker 02

I tried to spell the other one.

• 1:12:46Speaker 04

You tried to spell the other one?

• 1:12:47Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:12:48Speaker 04

I wrote that, then erased it and then put the easier one.

• 1:12:51Speaker 02

Just know if you guys get this wrong, no one is allowed to go to Mardi Gras. And all three of you got it wrong, but you might as well read the answers anyway. Dang it. Andrew and I, yeah. Andrew and I put gumbo. That is wrong. And I said jambalaya. Yep, also wrong. Two delicious foods. Do you guys know the difference between-

• 1:13:08Speaker 04

  Are they popular in-

• 1:13:09Speaker 02

New Orleans? Yes. But the correct answer was, oh, we have no drum roll button. Why not?

• 1:13:16Speaker 02

Close enough. It's red beans and rice.

• 1:13:19Speaker 04

Oh, Claire's, Dad and Claire are obsessed with that.

• 1:13:22Speaker 02

Because you have to cook the beans all day. Because they're hard otherwise, you know? Yeah, exactly. Anyway, we're not going to do a quick update on the score because this is purely an exhibition match. We all got it wrong. Showcase game. Okay, update on the score.

• 1:13:37Speaker 04

I've got a score. Marquez with zero. Andrew, David, also zero.

• 1:13:41Speaker 02

No, Andrew. Andrew carrying the one with zero.

• 1:13:46Speaker 04

All right, next question. What was the IP rating of the Microsoft Zune? Not the HD, the OG.

• 1:13:56Speaker 04

  Not the Ananobi.

• 1:14:00Speaker 04

Nick fan reference. Damn, Andrew, you got it already?

• 1:14:02David Imel?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:14:03Speaker 04

  Of course. It gets everywhere.

• 1:14:04David Imel?

  Okay.

• 1:14:05Andrew Manganelli?

I'm gonna win this preseason game.

• 1:14:08Speaker 04

  Yeah. Postseason?

• 1:14:10Andrew Manganelli?

  Not this season.

• 1:14:11Speaker 04

  Postseason?

• 1:14:12Andrew Manganelli?

No, postseason is usually more important.

• 1:14:14Speaker 04

Yeah. Preseason is just for funsies. Like this. All right, flip him and read. What do you got?

• 1:14:20David Imel?

  That's probably an X.

• 1:14:21Speaker 04

  What'd you guys say? I did IPX4.

• 1:14:25David Imel?

  I did IPX3.

• 1:14:28Speaker 01

  I did IP45.

• 1:14:30Speaker 04

Is that a? Nope. What's that thing? It did not have an IP rating.

• 1:14:33David Imel?

  I knew it. I knew. I asked.

• 1:14:36Speaker 04

At the beginning, I was like, this is probably a freaking. Yeah, when you said, is this a trick question? I was like, oh, he's on to me.

• 1:14:43David Imel?

  Dang it.

• 1:14:44Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, we all got tricked anyway.

• 1:14:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:14:47Speaker 01

  I hate to see it.

• 1:14:47David Imel?

  Well, um.

• 1:14:49Speaker 04

I'd have loved to see that.

• 1:14:51David Imel?

It's officially August. You know what that means. Pixels this month. iPhones not this month. You're gonna get some information.

• 1:14:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:15:00David Imel?

  As the weeks go by.

• 1:15:01Speaker 01

Very soon. I'm gonna get the orange one. I decided.

• 1:15:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:15:03Speaker 01

I think this is gonna be my. I think all of us are pre-ordering this thing. Yeah.

• 1:15:07Speaker 04

  The one of iPhone.

• 1:15:09Andrew Manganelli?

  iPhone, I'm getting the.

• 1:15:10Speaker 01

Oh, sorry. Pixel and iPhone. Oh. I was talking about the pixel. Oh, I was talking about the orange. Pixel's not an orange. The pixel's a. Gotcha. Gotcha. Yeah. Still ordering it, though.

• 1:15:19Speaker 04

  In limoncello?

• 1:15:20Speaker 01

I would like to take this opportunity to say.

• 1:15:23Speaker 01

This is not goodbye. This is. See you soon.

• 1:15:27Speaker 04

  Oh, no.

• 1:15:27Speaker 01

  Uh.

• 1:15:28Speaker 04

You're not supposed to tell them because we have to trick them to watch.

• 1:15:30Speaker 01

Well, you'll, you know, it'll still be very exciting, obviously, but I will be out of town, as I've mentioned, for two episodes of the podcast.

• 1:15:40Speaker 04

  Not three?

• 1:15:40Speaker 01

  Yes. I believe it's two.

• 1:15:42Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:15:42Andrew Manganelli?

Three would have been if you didn't make it this week.

• 1:15:44Speaker 01

What are you doing, Marquez? I will be competing in the World Games event for Ultimate Frisbee for Team USA. So hopefully, we have a good time. It is in. Chengdu, China, so I cannot join the podcast from the other side of the world. Even if I did, the time zones would be too crazy anyway. So yeah, I'll be missing two weeks, but the crew's gonna hold it down and we're still gonna talk tech. And when I get back, we'll catch up on everything that I missed.

• 1:16:11Speaker 02

And we have lots of fun stuff planned for your absence.

• 1:16:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:14Speaker 02

  Make sure you tune in.

• 1:16:15Andrew Manganelli?

Trivia's gonna be worth 50 points each when you're gone.

• 1:16:17Speaker 01

Don't have too much fun without me.

• 1:16:20Speaker 02

And also, everyone send Marques good vibes that he wins Worlds.

• 1:16:24Speaker 01

  Good vibes and good luck.

• 1:16:25Speaker 02

Comes back with a big trophy.

• 1:16:27Speaker 04

  We need another one.

• 1:16:28Speaker 01

  That would be nice.

• 1:16:28David Imel?

So you'll be here for the Pixel 10.

• 1:16:31Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:16:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Barely.

• 1:16:32Speaker 01

  Yeah, right on time.

• 1:16:33David Imel?

  Nice.

• 1:16:34Speaker 01

So yeah, thank you again for watching and for listening and for tuning in this week and subscribing, of course, because that's super important. And if you did subscribe, that means we'll see you next week.

• 1:16:44Andrew Manganelli?

And if you don't, Marques will lose.

• 1:16:50Andrew Manganelli?

Uh, oh my goodness, how do you do this?

• 1:16:52David Imel?

We're produced by Emily and Alice Revan. The Vox Media Podcast Network is the people that produce us and our music is the Vane Sil guy.

• 1:17:00Andrew Manganelli?

  Bingo.

• 1:17:01Speaker 01

  I'm down.

• 1:17:02Speaker 04

  Send it.

• 1:17:03David Imel?

I think that's pretty good, right?

• 1:17:04Andrew Manganelli?

  It's pretty good.

• 1:17:19Speaker 01

Hot take, the Zune HD was the single greatest designed MP3 player of all time.

• 1:17:26Andrew Manganelli?

  What?

• 1:17:26Speaker 01

  MP4 player.

• 1:17:27Andrew Manganelli?

  You know the iPod exists.

• 1:17:29Speaker 01

  Yeah. I'm, did I stutter?

• 1:17:31Andrew Manganelli?

  Can you buy it?

• 1:17:32Speaker 01

  Did I stutter?

• 1:17:33Andrew Manganelli?

  That's crazy.

• 1:17:35Speaker 09
