Hey and welcome to the Vergecast for the what is going on with my hair? What is happening? It really is like, if I keep my head in this position, it's okay.

• 0:30David Pierce?

  Yeah, I think it works.

• 0:31Speaker 00

It's like a serious way. Welcome to the Vergecast for the week of March.

• 0:36David Pierce?

  Seventeenth.

• 0:37Speaker 00

  Seventeenth, 2014. I'm Josh DePulsky.

• 0:40Speaker 02

  I'm Dieter Boden.

• 0:41David Pierce?

  I'm David Pierce.

• 0:42Speaker 00

And I know what you're thinking. Where's Katie and TC? Why isn't the wine cast going down?

• 0:50David Pierce?

TC might be dead. Is that possible?

• 0:52Speaker 00

TC is, well, Katie made a lot of threats. A lot of threats.

• 0:58Speaker 02

TC's cowboy hat turned out to be a lot.

• 1:00Speaker 00

I just got an email on my Asha 210. I get pop up notifications.

• 1:03David Pierce?

Is that even a thing that's possible?

• 1:04Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 1:04David Pierce?

Can you get emails on your Asha 210?

• 1:06Speaker 00

Pretty cool, right? Let me view it right now on the cool mail app. Let me load that up. It's loading up the mail app.

• 1:12David Pierce?

This really does make me want a yellow phone really badly.

• 1:14Speaker 00

Yellow phones are where it's all, it's all happening. Here it is. Here's my email. Just loading, still loading. Let me tell you what the Asha 210 is not. Fast. Okay, anyhow.

• 1:25David Pierce?

But how many Sims do you have?

• 1:27Speaker 00

At least two. At least two. I'm living in the international lifestyle.

• 1:31David Pierce?

  You're a man of mystery.

• 1:32Speaker 00

I'm a man of international dual SIM citizenry.

• 1:35David Pierce?

Somebody's like, Josh, you're needed in Dubai right now.

• 1:37Speaker 00

I'm like, I'm there. I'm there. I'll just pop my Dubai SIM in and call it a day.

• 1:40David Pierce?

  Not even a problem.

• 1:41Speaker 00

Or my Dubai SIM may already be in there.

• 1:43David Pierce?

  Yeah, you don't know.

• 1:43Speaker 00

I may have just come back from Dubai. Anyhow, this is the Vergecast where we discuss the week in items that we're interested in talking about.

• 1:50David Pierce?

  That's right. Josh's travels.

• 1:51Speaker 00

My travels. Dubai, New Mexico, whatever.

• 1:56Speaker 00

  Actual Mexico, actual Mexico.

• 1:59David Pierce?

  Old Mexico.

• 2:00Speaker 00

Old Mexico, I guess is what it would be. Cause actual would be like, it would be, what is fake Mexico and actual Mexico.

• 2:06David Pierce?

  Right.

• 2:07Speaker 02

What if there were an English settlement in Old Mexico? It would be ye olde Mexico.

• 2:11Speaker 00

  Ye olde.

• 2:11David Pierce?

  Ye olde Mexico.

• 2:12Speaker 00

  Ye olde.

• 2:14David Pierce?

That's definitely a place in Vegas.

• 2:15Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 2:15David Pierce?

I'm just gonna throw that out there.

• 2:16Speaker 00

Or new would have an E on the end of it.

• 2:17Speaker 02

  Right.

• 2:18David Pierce?

  N U E.

• 2:19Speaker 00

New. Anyhow, a lot of stuff talked about this week, a lot of things to discuss, and I gotta tell you, uh, this is an exciting Verge cast for reasons that I can't tell you yet. And may, and may decide to not tell you. But we'll see. We're just winging it. I just heard, I just heard Ross laugh.

• 2:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:36Speaker 00

He's like, oh God, don't do this to me.

• 2:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:38Speaker 00

Um, anyhow, but, um, sorry, I'm just checking on my hair and trying to figure out if it's.

• 2:42David Pierce?

  Just take your time.

• 2:42Speaker 00

  I got.

• 2:43David Pierce?

You do what you gotta do.

• 2:43Speaker 00

By the way, business cash, Thursday cash going on.

• 2:46David Pierce?

  Thursday cash?

• 2:46Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 2:47David Pierce?

  Is that a thing?

• 2:47Speaker 00

I'm just like, so, I'm like, so whatever.

• 2:49David Pierce?

  Thursday.

• 2:50Speaker 00

You know what I mean? That, yes, that is, am I quoting Avril Lavigne? Yes, I am quote quoting Avril Lavigne.

• 2:56David Pierce?

  As you should.

• 2:56Speaker 00

A Canadian goddess, if there ever was one. Am I right?

• 3:00Speaker 02

  No.

• 3:01Speaker 00

  Minnesota. What's the Minnesota?

• 3:04Speaker 02

  Duck, duck, grey duck, man.

• 3:05Speaker 00

Duck, duck, grey duck forever. Minnesota, Canada connection. It's the weather, right?

• 3:08David Pierce?

Have you heard of this duck, duck, grey duck instead of duck, duck goose?

• 3:11Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 3:12David Pierce?

  That is nonsense.

• 3:13Speaker 00

  Yeah, so everybody knows that.

• 3:14David Pierce?

  That's.

• 3:15Speaker 00

  I've never heard that.

• 3:15David Pierce?

  Okay, thank you.

• 3:16Speaker 00

If you look, what is it?

• 3:17Speaker 02

Duck, duck, what? Everywhere in, in America, except for Minnesota, they, they play duck, duck, goose. This insane game that is clearly inferior to what we play in Minnesota, which is duck, duck, grey duck.

• 3:28Speaker 00

  Duck, duck, grey duck.

• 3:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:30Speaker 00

  So it's like, you're a duck, you're a duck, you're a duck, but your color is grey.

• 3:34Speaker 02

Yeah, but no, but, but. You're just like, duck, duck, duck, goose, whatever. Yeah, we can handle.

• 3:40Speaker 00

Wow, look at this, look at this.

• 3:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, see?

• 3:42David Pierce?

  Isn't this crazy?

• 3:43Speaker 02

Cause you can go, yellow duck, blue duck.

• 3:45Speaker 00

So there is a Canadian, there is a Canadian connection though, to that, right?

• 3:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:49Speaker 00

That's probably what they do. What about in Canada? Do we know?

• 3:52Speaker 02

I, I think that it's just goose in Canada. It's just goose, goose, goose, goose, goose.

• 3:55Speaker 00

Cause goose, they're like, it's like A, goose, goose, A.

• 4:01David Pierce?

  Can you run?

• 4:02Speaker 02

  And then you run.

• 4:03Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 4:03Speaker 02

  And then you apologize afterwards.

• 4:05Speaker 00

And like, sorry, sorry about that. So anyhow, so a lot to talk about this week, lot to talk about. Let's just start with what I consider to be one of the most exciting pieces of news I've heard in a while. Christian Bale may be the next Steve Jobs.

• 4:19David Pierce?

Well, it's like, we're like six steps away from maybe.

• 4:22Speaker 00

  On film.

• 4:22David Pierce?

It might possibly, potentially, maybe be considered.

• 4:26Speaker 00

The rap had a story today, which is that Fincher is like, see, Christian Bale is my only choice to play Steve Jobs in my not officially announced.

• 4:34David Pierce?

  Right.

• 4:35Speaker 00

Maybe is not happening, but is happening.

• 4:37David Pierce?

But so all we know, we know the movie is happening.

• 4:39Speaker 00

  Biopic.

• 4:40David Pierce?

Right. And we know Sorkin is writing it.

• 4:42Speaker 00

  Right.

• 4:42David Pierce?

Those are the only things we know for sure.

• 4:43Speaker 00

Is that on paper? Is that a fact?

• 4:44David Pierce?

  I believe so.

• 4:45Speaker 00

  Yeah, that's, that's a fact.

• 4:46David Pierce?

I think those are both, we both think.

• 4:47Speaker 00

We think it's gonna be like three scenes surrounding.

• 4:49David Pierce?

Oh, right, around like launch events.

• 4:51Speaker 00

  The launch event.

• 4:52Speaker 02

That's an old, that's an old rumor, isn't it?

• 4:53Speaker 00

  Yeah, it is.

• 4:54David Pierce?

No, but Sorkin has said that, so that's true.

• 4:56Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 4:57David Pierce?

  That is true.

• 4:57Speaker 00

This is what, this is, listen, I can tell already, this is what people pay their Vergecast money for, this conversation.

• 5:02Speaker 02

Listen, we're, so, let me, let me, let me just lead this discussion by saying that I think this is a mistake.

• 5:07David Pierce?

  Why?

• 5:08Speaker 02

  No.

• 5:08David Pierce?

  That's the.

• 5:09Speaker 02

After, see, I, well, here's what I'll say, after seeing him in American Hustle, which I just watched.

• 5:14David Pierce?

He's so good in that movie.

• 5:15Speaker 02

Surprised, very surprised by his, the depth, and I feel like nobody talks about him being in that movie, he's the star of the movie.

• 5:21David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 5:21Speaker 02

I feel like it's not really, so, here's the thing. Like, Christian Bale can do angry Steve Jobs just fine, like, here's, you know, his, he can freak out on people, and that needs to happen. But does he have a reality distortion field? Does he inspire like, love and hope?

• 5:38David Pierce?

Have you seen American Hustle? That's like 100% what he does in American Hustle.

• 5:41Speaker 00

There is a, there, yes, I would say he has a soft side.

• 5:44David Pierce?

That's his whole character, is like being bad.

• 5:45Speaker 00

I feel like the look is there, I feel like this works, you know?

• 5:48David Pierce?

Yeah, wow, seeing them side by side. That's Ashley Kutcher on the left, right?

• 5:52Speaker 00

He can act, this guy can act, Bale can act, and he'll, and he'll lose weight, he'll gain weight, you know, Jobs had his.

• 5:57David Pierce?

  He didn't even care.

• 5:58Speaker 00

Well, you know, but Jobs, and you know, when he got sick, he had huge weight fluctuations in the 90s, and in the early 2000s, he was actually kind of heavy.

• 6:05David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 6:05Speaker 00

You know, there's like a period where, so that's like, we know Christian Bale can just jam on that, no problem. Machinist, he looks insane in it, right?

• 6:12David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 6:12Speaker 00

So, you know, it's kind of a bummer to talk about, but that, if, if you need someone to get sick, to look like they're really truly sick on film.

• 6:19David Pierce?

  He can do it.

• 6:20Speaker 00

  Christian Bale's your man.

• 6:21David Pierce?

  He's your guy.

• 6:21Speaker 00

He's like, how much, he's like, how much weight do I need to lose?

• 6:23David Pierce?

  Give me 20 minutes.

• 6:24Speaker 00

He's like, original birth weight, no problem, I'm there.

• 6:27Speaker 02

  I have a tense and angry, but I don't.

• 6:29Speaker 00

Eight pounds, six ounces, or by Monday.

• 6:31Speaker 02

But he's, he's like, he's compelling in part because he's so often inscrutable. And I don't think that Steve Jobs is inscrutable. He wears his heart on his sleeve and I don't think I can get, get that out of.

• 6:40Speaker 00

No, I can see it. I totally see it. Well, I'm, I'm completely now, now that they've said that if he, if it's anybody else, I'm going to be very upset and disappointed. And I'll probably go crazy.

• 6:51David Pierce?

Who else, is anybody else even out there as a possibility?

• 6:53Speaker 00

No Wiley. Well, that would be an interesting, here's the problem though. He's not going to carry, they're not going to put Noah Wiley in the, in the Fincher, Sorkin written, Jaws, he just can't carry a movie like that. They need star power. You know, it'd be great, Tom Cruise. Just throwing it out there. Can we get a picture of Tom Cruise next to another picture of Steve Jobs? I don't know, it could work. I mean, I think it could work, honestly.

• 7:13David Pierce?

  Tom Cruise.

• 7:13Speaker 00

  Christian Bale's in the right.

• 7:14David Pierce?

  Horrible human, pretty good actor.

• 7:15Speaker 00

No, he's a great person and a great actor. My personal friend, Tom Cruise.

• 7:20David Pierce?

  That's right.

• 7:20Speaker 00

  What?

• 7:21David Pierce?

  You get their pals.

• 7:21Speaker 00

  I hung out with Cruise.

• 7:23Speaker 02

  Oh, that's right.

• 7:23Speaker 00

Cruise missiles, I refer to him.

• 7:24David Pierce?

But he likes that a lot.

• 7:26Speaker 00

He was great. One of the greatest people I've ever met in my entire life.

• 7:30David Pierce?

  Did he leap on couches?

• 7:31Speaker 00

I will, you don't understand, I've told this story before, but many years ago, I started like, even like, I really hadn't seen that many Tom Cruise movies. I started like talking about, you know, cause here's the thing about Tom Cruise, in a lot of social circles, Tom Cruise gets some guff. Like you were just, you were just, you just said terrible person, great actor or something. There we go. Totally, totally could play him.

• 7:50David Pierce?

  Yeah, this could actually.

• 7:51Speaker 00

I'm feeling very good about Tom Cruise in that role. Very good. And by the way, he's got a vulnerability. Have you seen him in Magnolia? Incredible performance.

• 7:57David Pierce?

  It's true.

• 7:57Speaker 00

  Anyhow, so many years ago.

• 7:58David Pierce?

  Good crier, Tom Cruise.

• 7:59Speaker 00

Many years ago, pre, pre Magnolia, which is one of my favorite movies, and he's excellent in it. Uh, Paul Thomas Anderson, by the way, you should check it out. Uh, if you haven't seen it, it's three and a half hours. Um, you know, I used to factor my long plane rides by going like, well, this is like two Magnolias. So anyhow, I had this kind of running joke that he, people would be like, oh, Tom Cruise, you know, uh, and I'd be like, yeah, I think he's great. He's my, actually my favorite actor. And then it turned into like, I started really like getting into Tom Cruise and watching his films. And then it was like, I became like fairly obsessed with Tom Cruise and excited to like, if he was on a talk show, I would like stay up to tune in, well, not stay up, but I would make sure to tune in.

• 8:36David Pierce?

Stay up way past that time.

• 8:37Speaker 00

You know, I would, if it's. A film of his was on TV, I would definitely watch it. And then finally, I got to totally hang out with him backstage at late night, which was the truly the pinnacle of my existence as a human.

• 8:47David Pierce?

  And I just, I remember.

• 8:48Speaker 00

Better than, better than having a baby.

• 8:49David Pierce?

I remember how excited you were.

• 8:50Speaker 00

It was birth of my child and then having a conversation with Tom. And he like legit, anyhow, I don't want to go into, but he like came into the dressing room and like talked about books with, with me and Laura for like 10 minutes.

• 9:01David Pierce?

  What, is he a reader?

• 9:01Speaker 00

  It was insane.

• 9:02David Pierce?

I could see him being a reader.

• 9:03Speaker 00

He's reading, he was reading, no, we were talking about this series called.

• 9:05David Pierce?

  It was a cheap shot.

• 9:06Speaker 00

No, we were talking about the series that he was really into called the, I think it's called The Lensman, which is like a 1920, no, no. It's like from the 1920s, The Lensman series, yeah. It's a space opera written by Edward Elmer Doc Smith. And yeah, it was first published in 1937. He started writing these stories. Anyhow, he was like talking about how he wanted to do, he wanted, he was like, he had, he said insane things that only a Tom Cruise type person would say. He said things like, I'm trying to convince Ron Howard to make a movie.

• 9:40David Pierce?

  Wow.

• 9:40Speaker 00

Which is just like a, he says that all the time to people. I was like, that's nuts. Anyhow, he was lovely, man.

• 9:46David Pierce?

It's gotta be weird to be Tom Cruise.

• 9:47Speaker 00

I just, just, I just want to spend more time with Tom Cruise.

• 9:49David Pierce?

Is he as short as everyone says he is?

• 9:51Speaker 00

You know, he didn't seem that short to me. I'll be honest with you. And I'm a tall guy. I'm six foot four. I'm very tall. He did not strike me as that short. What are we, was he wearing platform shoes?

• 9:58David Pierce?

He just had such a commanding presence.

• 9:59Speaker 00

Oh, my God. Yes. So great. See, Tom Cruise is awesome.

• 10:03David Pierce?

  This could actually totally work.

• 10:05Speaker 00

Tom Cruise is so great. What are we watching here? What is this?

• 10:08Speaker 02

  Top, top, something, Tom Cruise.

• 10:11Speaker 00

Top 10 Tom Cruise moments. I mean, by the way, could totally play Steve Jobs, in my opinion.

• 10:14David Pierce?

I mean, that kind of looked like Steve Jobs, that clip. Just there.

• 10:15Speaker 00

Yeah, totally, totally. He's got the intensity. He's got the vulnerability.

• 10:19David Pierce?

  He could yell at you.

• 10:20Speaker 00

Now that I've thought of this, I actually feel Christian Bale is a poor substitute.

• 10:24David Pierce?

  What?

• 10:24Speaker 00

Poor substitute for, for, for Tom Cruise. That would be crazy. Fincher, if you're watching, which I know you are because you're a huge Verge cast fan, David Fincher.

• 10:32David Pierce?

  First of all, hey.

• 10:34Speaker 00

  Starts off, hi again.

• 10:35Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 10:36Speaker 00

Uh, second, think about Tom Cruise for that. Okay.

• 10:39David Pierce?

I kind of want Christian Bale and David Fincher to make a movie together, though. Maybe not this one.

• 10:42Speaker 00

They've, they've made, have they not made a movie together?

• 10:45David Pierce?

  No, that's the thing.

• 10:46Speaker 00

I guess you're right. Anyhow, we spent far too much time talking about Tom Cruise.

• 10:50David Pierce?

  That's, that's impossible.

• 10:51Speaker 00

Okay. Somebody just got surprised. I just got a tweet, hot tweet coming in. They did not know I was six foot four. Also, there was a suggestion, McConaughey.

• 11:02David Pierce?

  No.

• 11:03Speaker 00

No, I don't know, I could see it.

• 11:04David Pierce?

He could kind of do anything at this point.

• 11:06Speaker 00

He's got a lot of range.

• 11:06David Pierce?

Like I'd give it to him.

• 11:07Speaker 00

He'd be, he'd be good. He'd be good for the parts where Steve Jobs is a total wreck. Like a complete maniac.

• 11:13David Pierce?

The also, the other problem is like, you can't make Matthew McConaughey not extraordinarily handsome. Like Christian Bale, like pulled off being fat, but like fat Matthew McConaughey would still be a pretty good looking dude.

• 11:24Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 11:24David Pierce?

  That's a problem.

• 11:25Speaker 00

Anyhow, so that's, so that story is, we don't know the, we don't know the tail end of it yet, but that's very interesting.

• 11:32Speaker 00

Yeah. I mean, Fincher wants, apparently wants Bale to play Jobs.

• 11:37David Pierce?

Which is such a power move.

• 11:38Speaker 00

  Which I see it.

• 11:38David Pierce?

You know this huge budget movie you're making, I will only do it if you give me everything I want.

• 11:43Speaker 00

Just put anybody with a beard to Steve Jobs, like, well, he's got facial hair, so I mean, I guess. You know, that's could work. I mean, it could work. It's like, you know, a good looking guy with a beard. So Sony, I'm available, you know?

• 11:58Speaker 02

  There he is.

• 11:59Speaker 00

  This. One more thing.

• 12:00David Pierce?

  He's a good yeller.

• 12:01Speaker 00

  This guy.

• 12:02David Pierce?

  I know it for sure.

• 12:04Speaker 00

  What, oh yeah.

• 12:04David Pierce?

  He's a good yeller.

• 12:05Speaker 00

Yeah. And cry, cry a lot.

• 12:06Speaker 02

I was gonna say, are you a good crier?

• 12:08Speaker 00

Doesn't really work. I mean, the glasses are, yeah, thanks. The gla- not seeing it so much, although, you know, Jobs actually had kind of a nose on him. Like when you look at that, it's sort of kind of big.

• 12:19David Pierce?

I mean, have you considered growing your hair out a lot?

• 12:21Speaker 00

Well, I actually, my hair is long, getting longer now. I'm actually thinking about growing it like a little bit longer.

• 12:26David Pierce?

  Just really going for it?

• 12:27Speaker 00

I'm thinking about going for like a full on beautiful mane that I can throw back into a pony. Or a mini pony.

• 12:33Speaker 02

Are you, are you just calling it a pony?

• 12:34David Pierce?

  Like a bun?

• 12:35Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm just gonna call it a pony. Can we get a shot? Can I see a picture of either Christian Bale or Johnny Depp with like a little bit of a ponytail? Cause that's what I'm going for. Or, or Jared Leto, I think has had a mini, been rocking a pony at some point recently. That's who I'm, that's my, I'm emulating.

• 12:51Speaker 02

I'm trying to find pictures of you from when I first met you at the launch of the, um. It was super long, at the launch of the Centro, I believe it was.

• 12:58Speaker 00

  Oh my God.

• 12:59David Pierce?

  Wow.

• 12:59Speaker 00

Centro launch, I remember that, that was a shit show.

• 13:02David Pierce?

Dieter's whole life is just measured by launch.

• 13:04Speaker 00

That was when I, who was it? At Culligan, at Culligan. I like mobbed at Culligan and was like, hey, I want to do an interview with you. And he was like, contact my people, they're right, boom, right there, that's my new show.

• 13:12David Pierce?

  That's Josh.

• 13:13Speaker 00

There I am. Except, except super duper beautiful and good looking.

• 13:18Speaker 00

  Anyhow.

• 13:20David Pierce?

  Should we talk about watches?

  Android Wear.

• 13:22David Pierce?

  Android Wear.

• 13:23Speaker 00

This is a huge deal. This is a huge deal for me on several levels, but Android Wear. So Google had this like what seemed like a totally, I don't know, like really bad way to roll out this thing. It's like one day we're sitting around and then one minute later like, oh, like we're it's one it's regular life. And then a minute later like, hey, we've created like a totally new version of Android to run on watches and wearable.

• 13:43David Pierce?

  It was also super weird.

• 13:44Speaker 00

Zach Galifianakis is Steve Jobs. That's great.

• 13:46David Pierce?

  It's perfect.

• 13:47Speaker 00

But what if he lost a bunch of weight? Could work. I could see it. The same piercing gaze.

• 13:53David Pierce?

They're just looking into your soul right now.

• 13:55Speaker 00

  They're just looking at things.

• 13:56David Pierce?

No, but the the weird thing was we were at South by, this is last week.

• 13:59Speaker 00

  Yeah, that's South by Southwest.

• 14:00David Pierce?

South by Southwest, excuse me. South by, if you're, you know, in the know, which is cool if you're not.

• 14:05Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 14:05David Pierce?

But we were at South by last week and Sundar Pichai is onstage doing an interview.

• 14:10Speaker 00

  Head of Android.

• 14:11David Pierce?

Head of Android and Chrome. He's like the guy in charge of all this stuff. And he sort of, he said that there was going to be.

• 14:17Speaker 00

He said there's going to be like APIs and stuff so that Android can work with wearable devices. It's coming soon. We're gonna release some.

• 14:23Speaker 02

It sounded like it was gonna be like a little update, like a point update to Android.

• 14:26David Pierce?

But he was so nonchalant about it that the the guy who was interviewing him, John Battell, had to literally point out in to the audience to be like, hey, guys, this is news.

• 14:35Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 14:36David Pierce?

And he was so like, it just wasn't even a thing. And then they just like vomit this up on the internet and it changes everything.

• 14:40Speaker 00

So here it is. This is.

• 14:42Speaker 02

And it was it was a vomit on the internet.

• 14:44Speaker 00

  This is Android where.

• 14:45Speaker 02

  It was broken.

• 14:45Speaker 00

Yeah, it's like it's like it's like it went up and then all of a sudden, all these manufacturers like LG, Motorola, H did HTC say they're doing?

• 14:54Speaker 02

HTC said they're very excited about something or other.

• 14:57David Pierce?

They they announced them as a partner, but they haven't actually said anything.

• 14:59Speaker 00

So it's obviously gonna be a square or circular interface. And here's what's bugging me. It's driving me insane about the circular interface is that it has this little line at the bottom, which which.

• 15:07Speaker 02

Well, that's just that that device.

• 15:09Speaker 00

  No, but.

• 15:09David Pierce?

No, but I mean, like, look at these demos. These are all square.

• 15:11Speaker 00

  On the demo.

• 15:12David Pierce?

Like, every one of their demos is square.

• 15:13Speaker 00

It also shows it on the demo here. You can see that it shows the little line, which is insane. They're showing a lot of square. They did show some circular. I wish they would show it again.

• 15:19David Pierce?

Well, the demo is the the circular demo they're showing is the Motorola watch. So that's the only circular one we've seen.

• 15:24Speaker 00

Yeah. Uh, yeah. But so let me just say, so anyhow, long and short is this interface looks really good.

• 15:29David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 15:30Speaker 00

And looks totally like what I would want and have expected. But Motorola showed off this this device called the Moto 360, and it is a circular. Looks like a regular metal watch.

• 15:41David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 15:41Speaker 00

It's very big. It's 46 millimeters, which is pretty big, although not comparatively to like a lot of-

• 15:47David Pierce?

Compared to like your watch right there?

• 15:49Speaker 00

This is probably a, I think this is like a 42.

• 15:54David Pierce?

Okay, so it's a little bigger but not-

• 15:55Speaker 00

You know, you get used to it. It's weird because I used to have a, I always thought like, oh, I want a smaller watch like, like a Rolex Explorer. I don't know if you've ever seen one, not that I can afford a Rolex Explorer, but they have a, it's like a 36.

• 16:07David Pierce?

  Right.

• 16:07Speaker 00

And I was like, yeah, that's about the size I want. But when you look at it, it actually now kind of looks like, um, a little small. It looks like a small, it looks like a small watch.

• 16:14David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 16:14Speaker 00

And so, so watches have been getting progressively bigger. 46 is big, but it's not ridiculous. What I will say is,

• 16:23Speaker 00

  it looks awesome.

• 16:24David Pierce?

  Yeah, it does.

• 16:25Speaker 00

The interface looks awesome. The wa, I mean, the watch looks, it's not the exact watch, the face that I, the, the, the watch design that, it's plain. It's very basic, which is fine. I'm not complaining about that. But the whole concept looks great. And, um, I'm like really excited about it. I mean, Motorola has a history of making circular displays. They made the Aura. I mean, I definitely talked, I think there may be a Vergecast or several where I'm like, Motorola made the Aura. Why don't they just take that display and put it on a watch? I mean-

• 16:52David Pierce?

  Kinda what they did.

• 16:53Speaker 00

Yeah, kinda what they did. I was looking at Aura's on, on eBay recently, like before this stuff.

• 16:58David Pierce?

It was such a cool phone. Like, and look, it's like they were big on like the clock for the Aura.

• 17:02Speaker 00

No, no, it had all kinds of crazy clock stuff. Yeah. So, so this is a really cool development, I think. Like, the question is, can they execute on it? Can they pull off this, this breathtaking design and also have a good interface and have it work with your device?

• 17:14David Pierce?

  And battery life.

• 17:15Speaker 00

And well, battery life is a big one.

• 17:16David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 17:17Speaker 00

  I mean, I, I really-

• 17:18David Pierce?

I would argue the biggest thing. Like, that's ultimately the thing that matters the most.

• 17:21Speaker 00

Well, especially these are like big color displays. Yeah, like, that's, I, I'm willing to charge it once a day. Like, I will go that far.

• 17:30David Pierce?

I'm happy to charge it at night. I don't mind charging every night.

• 17:32Speaker 00

This is really driving me insane. This line at the bottom. There's like a little line.

• 17:37David Pierce?

Yeah. When I was about to get on the phone with Jim Wicks, I was sitting in a meeting with Jordan and Billy, two of our video directors, and they both were like, you have to ask him about the line.

• 17:46Speaker 00

But here's the thing, so they're saying like it's a square interface and that's so it's cutting off the bottom.

• 17:50Speaker 02

Well, the interface will work both circles. Like, Google designed it to work in either case.

• 17:53Speaker 00

So why doesn't it just fill in the color of whatever is in that part with the, you know, I feel like this is an interface.

• 17:59Speaker 02

I think the display stops there. It's not like.

• 18:01Speaker 00

No, that, why would the display stop there?

• 18:03David Pierce?

No, I mean, then it wouldn't be a round display.

• 18:04Speaker 00

Yeah, then how do you do a clock?

• 18:06Speaker 02

  Is the display fully round?

• 18:07Speaker 00

Can we see the clock, can we see the clock face close up, the watch face that Motorola shows? It's like a black watch face. It just looks like a watch.

• 18:14David Pierce?

I'm pretty sure it takes up the whole thing.

• 18:17Speaker 00

  Can we get?

• 18:19David Pierce?

Yeah, that takes up the whole screen.

• 18:20Speaker 00

Yeah, that takes up the whole screen. No, there's also, they show a person wearing it with the watch face in one of these images. I think the one just above this. No, no, I see that. Can you scroll up, though? I want to see the, um, yeah, can you zoom in on that image? Yeah, you see like the hand is there. It is, you can see it in this, in the, um, in the other one as well, but. So, so they can go fullscreen. It's not the display.

• 18:41David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 18:41Speaker 00

That is, that goes all the way down there. You can see, I guess this one's better. Yeah.

• 18:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:46Speaker 00

  It's all the way down.

• 18:46Speaker 02

No, no, it's not. I told you. It's the screen stops there.

• 18:49Speaker 00

Go back to that. Zoom in again?

• 18:52Speaker 02

  Screen stops.

• 18:53Speaker 00

Wow, this is a shocking revelation.

• 18:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:55Speaker 00

  Why?

• 18:56David Pierce?

  That makes no sense.

• 18:57Speaker 00

  Why is it doing that?

• 18:58Speaker 02

  Physics, man.

• 18:59Speaker 00

Oh, my God, what if, hey, what if? I'm about to blow your mind super hard right now.

• 19:05Speaker 02

What if that's a small solar strip under the glass?

• 19:09Speaker 00

It's solar and so it's getting recharged.

• 19:11Speaker 02

So on the hangout, Jim Wicks said.

• 19:13Speaker 00

How else would you, how else would you have?

• 19:14Speaker 02

There's no USB port. We're not talking about how it's charging, but it's really exciting. It's part of our special.

• 19:19Speaker 00

Dude, think about it. It's the face of the watch exposed all day long to light.

• 19:23David Pierce?

We were talking about this the other day about.

• 19:25Speaker 00

That would be insane if it actually worked.

• 19:27David Pierce?

Or something for how to charge it.

• 19:28Speaker 00

Or maybe it's a combo. It's like motion and, I mean, anyhow, well. Wait, what? The back's purple? Well, inductive charging is one thing, but like you gotta-

• 19:37Speaker 02

  That's fine.

• 19:38Speaker 00

But you don't, you want this thing to last all day and beyond, right?

• 19:42David Pierce?

Yeah. Well, and it's like, it's a, you know, there are a million reasons that it seems like it might not like it's-

• 19:47Speaker 00

  It's a lot of gear-

• 19:47David Pierce?

  But it's not super thick.

• 19:48Speaker 00

  It's a lot of gear-

• 19:49David Pierce?

It's an LCD screen, which means usually bad things.

• 19:52Speaker 00

It's a lot of stuff for it. It's not OLED.

• 19:54David Pierce?

  No.

• 19:54Speaker 00

It's weird that they didn't go with OLED.

• 19:55David Pierce?

Yeah, I don't totally know why that is.

• 19:56Speaker 00

Well, probably, probably because you can't see it in, and you can't see it in daylight.

• 20:00David Pierce?

  That too.

• 20:00Speaker 00

You know, basically. I mean, it's gotten better, but anyhow, I'm excited. I'm really excited. Here's the thing. So they're not the only people who can make a watch. Anybody can make a watch using this, this interface.

• 20:10Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 20:10Speaker 00

It is like plays on Google Now, which is, has been great. I actually feel like Google has made Google Now a little bit less good recently. Like they've changed some of the ways that it works.

• 20:19Speaker 02

Did you see the thing they added yesterday?

• 20:21Speaker 00

  No, what, what's that?

• 20:22Speaker 02

  Okay, Google, take a picture.

• 20:24Speaker 00

  Why would you do that?

• 20:26Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 20:27David Pierce?

  So-

• 20:28Speaker 02

  I'll take a photo.

• 20:28David Pierce?

It might, I mean, so I asked-

• 20:30Speaker 02

  We'll take a photo.

• 20:31Speaker 00

  What's the point of this?

• 20:31David Pierce?

When I talked to Jim Wicks, the Motorola's head of design, I asked specifically about a camera. I was like, why didn't you include a camera? People seemed to like it. And he, he got very cagey and was like, well, you haven't seen everything that we're doing yet.

• 20:42Speaker 00

  See, I don't-

• 20:42David Pierce?

And then this happens. I'm like, well, maybe that's the answer to the question.

• 20:45Speaker 00

And that's great, but like, I don't need my watch to take a photo.

• 20:47David Pierce?

I think it's a terrible idea, but every like the, the Galaxy Gear, it's like the most popular thing about it is people taking weird pictures with it.

• 20:54Speaker 00

  Why? I don't get it. I don't understand. I, I mean, I'd much rather have a real decent camera in a smartphone.

• 21:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:00Speaker 00

So anyhow, I'm, I'm excited about the interface. I'm excited about the possibility. I will say, everybody was like, they're just showing off. These are all just demos. These are all like, these aren't real things, but they did, uh, was it Jim Wicks? Who did a, a, a hangout with somebody?

• 21:12Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 21:12Speaker 00

And he actually has a working device and you can see him scrolling through. So, so there is something. I don't think these guys, this is just vaporware.

• 21:20Speaker 02

Yeah, well, they, they've released an SDK and it works. Like we can, we can look at it.

• 21:23Speaker 00

So what is this? Right. Actually, we, I think we did a story on it. Do we do a story on that? Oh, we're doing, we're working on something? Okay.

• 21:28David Pierce?

Yeah, but I think we have it. We can actually show some of the stuff that's working here.

• 21:32Speaker 00

Oh, this is a live demo right here?

• 21:34David Pierce?

  On the-

• 21:35Speaker 02

  So what is this?

• 21:35Speaker 00

The way it works is like there's, there's a home screen and you can tap on the G button to do voice inputs or you can say, okay, Google, but it doesn't work in this SDK.

• 21:42David Pierce?

  So it's in the SDK.

• 21:43Speaker 02

If you swipe up, that sort of like brings in your notifications.

• 21:47Speaker 00

  Okay, let's see this.

• 21:48Speaker 02

  And maybe I should.

• 21:49Speaker 00

Are no notifications. Are you gonna, this is Evan is running this?

• 21:53Speaker 02

  I'm, I'm gonna say.

• 21:54Speaker 00

It's exciting, although this is extremely boring. Now presumably this would be like a nice watch face that a third party.

• 21:59Speaker 02

  Right.

• 21:59Speaker 00

Develops for the, for the lock screen.

• 22:01Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah, so that, that came in. And so.

• 22:04Speaker 00

See, but look, it's not cut off. So they're doing, they're cutting it off for a reason. So, so open that message. What happened?

• 22:10Speaker 02

So Motorola is cutting it off, not Google. You can, there, there's, there's basically swipe up is open the message, swipe down is go down to back to the home screen. If you swipe to the left, it gives you options to interact with it.

• 22:20Speaker 00

  Can we see that?

• 22:22Speaker 02

So if, like, you can mark as read, you can reply.

• 22:25Speaker 00

So it's kind of like, a little bit like the Google Glass interface.

• 22:28Speaker 02

Yeah, and then if you swipe it to the right, it dismisses it and it also dismisses it on your phone.

• 22:32Speaker 00

Can we see that? Oh, that's awesome.

• 22:34David Pierce?

The fact that it syncs back is huge, because that's the thing I hate about most smartwatches, especially like Tebles. That it doesn't do a good job.

• 22:40Speaker 00

No, so that's syncing, that's not syncing to Evan's phone. That's just coming through on hangouts.

• 22:45Speaker 02

It's, because it's the SDK, it's like, you know.

• 22:47Speaker 00

  Right, janky.

• 22:48Speaker 02

  Yeah, so it.

• 22:49David Pierce?

But the idea is that it'll sync back to your phone.

• 22:51Speaker 00

  Right.

• 22:51Speaker 02

Yeah, so the whole thing, the whole thing, there's no like native apps on it, at least not yet. It's all notifications and stuff like tethered to your phone.

• 22:58Speaker 00

Presumably that you're gonna be able to make apps for, they will have like maps for the.

• 23:02Speaker 02

It's very simple. I mean, you send like detailed notification information, like directions on maps or whatever.

• 23:08Speaker 00

Well, you can play music on it.

• 23:09Speaker 02

Well, right. So you can control music on it.

• 23:12Speaker 00

This feels like, totally like the future.

• 23:14Speaker 02

  Well, so.

• 23:14Speaker 00

The fact that it's circular just feels like really cool. If they can pull this off and it gets, it runs well and has okay battery life. Like even if the display is like a little, like what's the resolution of the display? Do we know?

• 23:25David Pierce?

We don't know. They're not talking about it. That's the weird thing. They're like, they're really.

• 23:28Speaker 00

  Right.

• 23:29David Pierce?

  Reluctant to talk about.

• 23:30Speaker 00

But they said this is gonna be out in the summer.

• 23:32David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 23:32Speaker 00

  Yeah, so that's really soon.

• 23:34Speaker 02

Well, LG's is a summer. Is this one for sure?

• 23:35Speaker 00

No, I think Motorola said summer.

• 23:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:38Speaker 00

  So that's really soon.

• 23:39David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 23:40Speaker 00

  Right? Now presumably.

• 23:41David Pierce?

It's working. Like, they clearly have a thing that's working, so they must be in the phase of just tweaking.

• 23:45Speaker 00

When is, when is, when is Google I/O?

• 23:47David Pierce?

  Usually, it's like June.

• 23:48Speaker 00

Okay, so we're gonna see, we're gonna hear an announcement. I'm guessing that, you know, in Google, in the Google I/O package, they always give to all the developers there.

• 23:55Speaker 02

Did you hear that for Google I/O, it's now like a random lottery for developers?

• 23:58David Pierce?

  Really?

• 23:59Speaker 02

Yeah, instead of just first come, first serve and it sells out in a minute.

• 24:02David Pierce?

  In two seconds, yeah.

• 24:02Speaker 02

  They, it's, it's a lottery. I've been saying.

• 24:05Speaker 00

Um, so I think that, uh, I think that, uh, we're obviously going to see a bunch of devices there, or at least like very fully functioning devices. My guess is they're going to have a developer. They're going to, there's going to be some, here's the developer platform, right? Like a Nexus 5.

• 24:20David Pierce?

No, what I think they're gonna do is they're, well, they're gonna do that, but they're also gonna roll out like the app store at I O.

• 24:25Speaker 00

  Right. I would hope.

• 24:26David Pierce?

They're gonna be like, these things are out now, and also here are all the apps that we've had people build.

• 24:29Speaker 02

I am not confident there's going to be an app store for the watch. I am not a hundred percent confident it's not going to just be Google Now on your wrist with these, uh, you know, super notifications that it sends.

• 24:37Speaker 00

I don't know. It feels like-

• 24:38David Pierce?

They've talked pretty explicitly about one on third-party developers to make apps for it.

• 24:42Speaker 02

Yeah, but there is the battery-

• 24:43Speaker 00

Apps on the phone that like pushed off to it. Like, the thing, the question is, will this thing exist separate from your phone?

• 24:48Speaker 02

  Right.

• 24:48Speaker 00

Or is this like, I think it's like-

• 24:49Speaker 02

And I don't think it has to. It's like glass. It's a peripheral.

• 24:51Speaker 00

Well, also, it's kind of like notifications. I mean, notifications actually can be pretty robust on Android, right? So you can do a lot with a notification. You can reply in a notification. You can like share from a notification. You can do all kinds of things that are like really useful.

• 25:03Speaker 02

Existing notifications just work on it right now. It's just you can do more if you want to.

• 25:07Speaker 00

Right. I mean, I'm just saying like beyond Google Now, my guess is it'll tap into the notification system of Android.

• 25:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, it does.

• 25:14Speaker 00

Which is like its most powerful system.

• 25:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:17Speaker 00

  If you ask me.

• 25:17David Pierce?

  Yeah. No, I agree.

• 25:18Speaker 00

Like, I find that I interact with the-

• 25:19Speaker 02

  Basically live in it?

• 25:20Speaker 00

Yeah. I find that my notifications are so constant and they're so easy to interact with, that I'm like, almost that's my application switcher. Like, that's how I get around the phone. It's really interesting.

• 25:31David Pierce?

Even just little things like being able to archive an email from the notification-

• 25:34Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 25:34David Pierce?

  Is amazing.

• 25:35Speaker 00

Look at this. What's going on here?

• 25:36Speaker 02

This is, uh, dude talking to developers on how to make stuff talk to Android Wear.

• 25:42Speaker 00

  So exciting. It's very exciting.

• 25:43Speaker 02

So I guess it works with Android 4.3 and up?

• 25:45David Pierce?

Okay. So the other thing I think is really cool about this is that it's, they're talking about how it interacts with Chromecast, uh, which is gonna be, it's gonna be a remote for Chromecast.

• 25:54Speaker 00

Oh, that's an awesome idea. Here's the thing. I was messing with the Chromecast the other night. I have one in my bedroom.

• 25:59David Pierce?

It's so awesome. I keep buying them just randomly for notice. But here's what's crazy about the Chrom- It's thirty-five dollars. I'm like, I'll take another one.

• 26:04Speaker 00

But here's what's crazy about the Chromecast, like-

• 26:06Speaker 02

How many TVs do you have?

• 26:07David Pierce?

It's the best-selling thing on Amazon.

• 26:08Speaker 00

  Okay, but here's the-

• 26:08David Pierce?

The single best-selling electronic on Amazon.

• 26:10Speaker 00

That doesn't make any sense. But here's the thing.

• 26:11David Pierce?

  Electronic.

• 26:12Speaker 00

But here's the thing that I don't understand with Chromecast. Like, why can't they just build in a AirPlay-like function for like, if I have a video, like, if I shot a video of my baby, which I've done.

• 26:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:23Speaker 00

And I want to watch it in my, in, you know, on my Android phone, and I want to wa, and I have like video playback, and I want to watch it on the Chromecast, whether I'm in the Photos app or the Gallery app.

• 26:34Speaker 00

There's no way to do it. There is no, there's no, there's no native.

• 26:37David Pierce?

You can tab cast, you can cast a tab from your computer.

• 26:39Speaker 00

There's an app now that's called Allcast. No, Allcast does it. Allcast does it. But like what I'm saying is that should be something that's natively built into any, well, any place you can play video on your device, it should say, like, okay, not third-party apps, but like, if you have video on your device.

• 26:56David Pierce?

Right, because that's the best thing.

• 26:57Speaker 00

And even third-party apps, then it's like AirPlay, but my understanding, I mean, I think the thing is that because it's not streaming from the device, there's no way for it to happen.

• 27:04David Pierce?

  Right.

• 27:04Speaker 00

I mean, you have to have an intermediary, which is what Allcast is, right?

• 27:08David Pierce?

Right. But and that's the best thing about AirPlay is that it's just built in everywhere.

• 27:11Speaker 00

  No, that's the thing.

• 27:11David Pierce?

When you play anything, it just works.

• 27:13Speaker 00

No, no, it's incredible. Like when you, I mean, that's like, it's brilliant on an Apple device. When you have like, oh, I'm watching this in my ABC app or I'm doing, I don't know if ABC does it, but a bunch of them do. And it's just like, oh, you know, just throw it over to my TV. Or if I'm watching a video that I have, like that I, you know, saved to the device or whatever, just watch it. It's just like totally seamless. Like they have not gotten that at all. If they could get something, if they could just create their own intermediary on the device.

• 27:38David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 27:38Speaker 00

That's like play to Chromecast or whatever. I don't know.

• 27:42David Pierce?

But I think they'll get there. And I think the watch is actually like the perfect remote for all of this because like, and you know, we're talking, everybody's talking about the internet of things.

• 27:48Speaker 00

Alice claims that the Chromecast doesn't have the processing power to push those kinds of pixels. He also called you bro. He called me bro. So kind of he just ruined his argument.

• 27:56David Pierce?

  He's an Apple TV fanboy.

• 27:57Speaker 00

I have two conspiracy theories about why Android Wear got announced this week. Yeah. One is they wanted to, they knew, they knew that they waited until I O that it would either leak or they, Apple would announce something ahead of them. That's definitely, that's the most obvious. Definitely true. Second one is the Gear Fit, which seems like one of the better wearables out there right now, just got announced at 199 bucks. It's on preorder. What is it? Oh, the Gear Fit. But it runs Tizen. So instead of like letting Samsung sell a single one of these, they're like, you know what? We're going to announce this right now. So nobody buys. It's pretty harsh. It's a pretty harsh diss from, from Google to Samsung. Samsung switched to Tizen. So screw them. But also like, yeah, I mean, so here's. How Google feels. Sure. So here's the, love. So here's the question. They should, but Samsung's a partner for Android Wear.

• 28:41David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 28:41Speaker 00

  So.

• 28:41David Pierce?

Do you think that? Well, that's why Samsung's the best. They're like, we're going to make everything.

• 28:44Speaker 00

Whatever. And do you think, do you think? Shut up.

• 28:46David Pierce?

  That's a Samsung.

• 28:47Speaker 00

Do you think? That somebody like, a company like Pebble will adopt, I guess they won't because they want to be OS agnostic.

• 28:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:57David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 28:58Speaker 00

Although I, you know, it's not compatible.

• 28:59David Pierce?

I mean, but on some level, like, I don't see how, unless this is terrible, unless Android Wear is terrible, which is, there's a non-zero chance of it being terrible.

• 29:07Speaker 00

  Very well could be.

• 29:08Speaker 02

  So I actually asked.

• 29:09David Pierce?

I don't see how Pebble survives. Like, I, why would anyone buy a Pebble if this works at all?

• 29:14Speaker 00

Well, we just actually ran a story. We just ran a story. They sold 400,000 smartwatches.

• 29:18Speaker 02

He's not actually that worried about it.

• 29:20David Pierce?

  Really?

• 29:20Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, I asked him, like Mike, and he's like, you know, at least now we've got something.

• 29:26David Pierce?

Yeah. I mean, I guess Pebble's like a small enough company that.

• 29:29Speaker 00

  They don't need to be.

• 29:30David Pierce?

Right. They don't need to sell 100,900 to be successful. Yeah. That's a big number.

• 29:33Speaker 02

And if they can keep it cheaper than whatever these things cost, and presumably they will, that might help.

• 29:38David Pierce?

249 for the Pebble deal is like.

• 29:40Speaker 00

What happened? What's happened that, that, sorry, that we have a situation that I'm just reading about here amongst our staff members, that Evan Rogers and Nathan Seigert have, their V-card has merged?

• 29:54Speaker 02

Yes, that happened to me. Where are you reading this?

• 29:56Speaker 00

  It's.

• 29:57David Pierce?

Evan just sent an email to our entire staff titled, "I am not Nathan Seigert."

• 30:00Speaker 00

And then Laura like trolled him and I'm, now I'm really confused.

• 30:05Speaker 02

Yeah, that, this happened to me.

• 30:07Speaker 00

No, I think it happened to him.

• 30:09Speaker 02

  Well.

• 30:10Speaker 00

  It happened to somebody.

• 30:11Speaker 02

I tried to send him a text for our little demo.

• 30:12Speaker 00

  It happened one night.

• 30:14Speaker 02

Of Android Wear and it went to Nathan Seigert.

• 30:17Speaker 00

Very, very unusual and upsetting. Good thing I'm not thinking any of that information.

• 30:21Speaker 02

  Well.

• 30:21Speaker 00

It's my mainframe. From now on, if anybody sends me a V-card, I'm not stopping.

• 30:25Speaker 02

  My Intranet.

• 30:26David Pierce?

  V-card.

• 30:27Speaker 02

  Anyhow.

• 30:28David Pierce?

Don't laugh at V-cards, bro. My Intranet is solved. It's fine. Nobody's getting into my Intranet.

• 30:33Speaker 00

No one will ever break into your Intranet. So, okay, so anyhow, Android Wear, so let's just say it's a very exciting development. Let's.

• 30:41David Pierce?

I'm kind of pissed because I'm going to end up buying like a lot of these.

• 30:43Speaker 00

I just want one decent, like, look, God, it better be as good as it, they're, they're showing it.

• 30:48Speaker 02

  I hope it's good.

• 30:49Speaker 00

If it's terrible, I'm going to be very.

• 30:50Speaker 02

  If it stinks on this.

• 30:50Speaker 00

I'm going to be so upset.

• 30:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:52Speaker 00

  Let's hope it's. Good.

• 30:53David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 30:55David Pierce?

The, I was talking with somebody about this the other day and like this, this makes real problems for Apple now because they used to. No, but the Apple's whole move was always like this industry exists. We're going to come in and make it great and beautiful and functional.

• 31:10Speaker 00

No, no, no, no, they're gonna go. No, but Google didn't do it because their, their, their mass PR message was like really confusing and like random. Look, Apple's gonna do this. It's very, if they have.

• 31:19David Pierce?

Well, they're also gonna put it on sale, really.

• 31:21Speaker 00

Well, yeah, they're gonna put it on sale immediately. If they have an event, Apple's going to do, I mean, if they have a device. And they're going to have an event for it, which I believe they probably will.

• 31:30David Pierce?

Well, there's been all these rumors they're gonna do a TV thing in April.

• 31:34Speaker 00

  Yeah. Well, I don't know.

• 31:36David Pierce?

  I wonder.

• 31:36Speaker 00

But they're gonna have like a hell, it's kind of a.

• 31:38David Pierce?

  WWDC thing.

• 31:39Speaker 00

  Health device of some type.

• 31:40David Pierce?

Yeah, for a health book. Is that what we've been seeing all the?

• 31:42Speaker 00

Yep, I don't know. I don't know. I don't, I don't think that many people care enough about their health to, for that to make sense, but.

• 31:47David Pierce?

It like measures your heartbeat. I don't care. I don't really care that much about my heartbeat.

• 31:50Speaker 00

But anyhow, so, but uh. They're just gonna do an event, they're gonna say, they're gonna, you know, they're gonna say, now, of course, Jobs is the master of this and they like are. Trying hard to replicate it, but you know, they'll get up and they'll say, here's what, everybody's talking about wearables. Everybody's talking about these devices you wear on your wrist.

• 32:06David Pierce?

And they're gonna make fun of all the.

• 32:07Speaker 00

Here's what the competition is doing, you know, here's Samsung, this, you know, is like, they're gonna make fun of it. The display doesn't even go the right way. When you try to look at it, they're gonna look, put the gear fit up. Then they'll show Android, they'll say, Google announced these. There's no real products yet, but they say something's coming in the future. And then they're gonna say, what is all, this is all junk. We figured it out.

• 32:27David Pierce?

And he's gonna like pull up his shirt sleeve.

• 32:30Speaker 00

Now, what if he opens his shirt and it's a necklace?

• 32:35David Pierce?

Johnny I just like pulls open his deep.

• 32:39Speaker 00

Johnny I won't be on stage because of his, because of his crushing stage fright, but uh.

• 32:44David Pierce?

  I have stage fright.

• 32:45Speaker 00

But no, it's fine. It, look, you know what?

• 32:47David Pierce?

I'm afraid right now. I'm terrified.

• 32:48Speaker 00

You ain't Johnny Ive. Okay, my man?

• 32:50David Pierce?

  That's true.

• 32:51Speaker 00

You get Johnny Ive money, your stage fright should go away. Get that guy to help you. At any rate.

• 32:56David Pierce?

  You're a stage fright guy.

• 32:57Speaker 00

You're a stage fright guy. Yeah.

• 32:58David Pierce?

  Everyone needs one of those.

• 32:59Speaker 00

Just dope, doped up. Just be like, shoot me up with whatever, put me out there. That's what I do. Um, anyhow, so they're gonna say like they've figured they cracked it. They figured it out. They got the awesome. And maybe they do. I don't know. Apple might have an amazing device.

• 33:10David Pierce?

But like, what did, what would they do that would make you more excited than this, other than have a thing I can buy tomorrow?

• 33:16Speaker 00

I mean, if somebody that works with an iPhone. Well, I mean, somebody's fair. If Google doesn't make the Android work with an iPhone, somebody will hack it to make it happen. Well, it is that I would jailbreak. Presumably it doesn't.

• 33:26David Pierce?

  In a heartbeat.

• 33:26Speaker 00

  Presumably it doesn't work.

• 33:27David Pierce?

  I should jailbreak it anyway.

• 33:28Speaker 00

  The, the watch.

• 33:29David Pierce?

  Right.

• 33:29Speaker 00

Well, my guess is couldn't they, couldn't they create an app that communicates via Bluetooth? I mean, Pebble does.

• 33:36David Pierce?

  Presumably, yeah. I mean, it's a Pebble.

• 33:37Speaker 00

  Is that what Pebble does?

• 33:38David Pierce?

Yeah, but it's way, Pebble is so much more like interesting and accessible if you use a Android phone.

• 33:43Speaker 00

Well, there's more apps to do more weird stuff with the iPhone. It kind of does what it does.

• 33:46David Pierce?

It's the same sort of notifications things where like on iOS.

• 33:49Speaker 00

But imagine, but imagine a native device that plugs into the core features of iOS and then you, that's the Apple device, right? If it does all that stuff. I mean, so notifications on a watch are super important. I would want to see Apple get notifications right on the phone before I trust them.

• 34:06David Pierce?

  Yeah, that'd be nice.

• 34:06Speaker 00

Notifications on my wrist. Oh, yeah. No, their notifications are absolutely terrible. Yeah. They're absolutely pathetically bad. Yeah, by comparison. I actually was like, um, I was using my phone today.

• 34:17David Pierce?

  Good story.

• 34:18Speaker 00

I was using my phone. No, it might have been while I had the.

• 34:20David Pierce?

Was it your, was it your Asha phone?

• 34:21Speaker 00

They're using your Asha phone? What's that? The Asha phone? Yeah, no, not my Asha. My, I was using my Sony, which is.

• 34:27David Pierce?

How many SIM cards were you using at the time?

• 34:29Speaker 00

There were four, at least four SIM cards.

• 34:32David Pierce?

  Your speeds were outrated.

• 34:33Speaker 00

No, but I was like, actually, I was using, I was using the phone. I was doing, you know, moving from like whatever thing to thing. And I actually had this moment where I was like, I love, like, I love the way this function. I was like, this is great. Like, I can't believe like what this thing is doing. It's such an amazing device. Like, and I have to say like, I, I do have that. Every once in a while, I have that kind of like sensation of like, my God, this is so crazy that this thing does all of the stuff that it does. And, uh, you know, it's a really cool, exciting feeling to have. I, I have to say like, the last time I was using my iPhone, I did not have, the feeling was the opposite. It was like, why are you doing this?

• 35:09David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 35:10Speaker 00

Um, I do, you know, that is a great point actually about the, getting the notification. Right on the phone before they try to get them right on a, on a, you know, but at least an interruptive, you know, an interruptive or kind of like very basic notification on a watch does make a little bit more sense. But people are saying, the rumor is like, is that what Apple wants to do? The rumor is this is like a health device. It doesn't really, it's not about like getting notifications and controlling your Apple TV or whatever.

• 35:36David Pierce?

Well, I'm surprised that nobody has really done a good job of trying to combine those two things yet because like there's clearly a market for, yeah, I mean, like you're wearing both right now, right?

• 35:44Speaker 00

  Yeah, it's cool, but it's like a fashion. I look like I'm wearing like a, like a, like a

• 35:48Speaker 02

  Bangles?

• 35:49Speaker 00

  Yeah, Bangles.

• 35:50David Pierce?

  You're a pretty cool guy.

• 35:51Speaker 00

  Look like I'm in the

• 35:51David Pierce?

  Bangles is the right word.

• 35:53Speaker 00

  I'm in the Bangles. Yeah.

• 35:55David Pierce?

But Bangles is the right word.

• 35:56Speaker 00

  No, I agree. I, I agree.

• 35:58Speaker 02

Wow. I got, I, I tried to search the internet for Bangles and it ended up searching my computer instead and I've got some, some Bangles on my computer.

• 36:05Speaker 00

I don't know. I don't know what that means. You have Bangles music?

• 36:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:09Speaker 00

Is Lisa responsible for this at all?

• 36:10Speaker 02

You want to listen to some Eternal Flame right now? It's actually, I helped out, I helped out my uncle. I backed up some stuff for him and I still have it here. So.

• 36:17Speaker 00

Classic story. I helped out my uncle and now there's a bunch of Bangles.

• 36:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:22Speaker 00

  Music.

• 36:22Speaker 02

  You're welcome, Bruce.

• 36:23Speaker 00

  On my computer.

• 36:24David Pierce?

  Uncles.

• 36:24Speaker 00

That was a weird kind of threatening, gun cocking motion you just made towards the screen. All right. Anyhow, so, so we don't know what Apple's going to do. Android Wear is, he is here, but not a real product yet, but they're saying by the summer.

• 36:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:38Speaker 00

  Let's move on.

• 36:39David Pierce?

  Let's talk about VR.

• 36:40Speaker 00

  Project Morpheus.

• 36:41David Pierce?

Project, which is the greatest name of anything ever.

• 36:44Speaker 00

  It's a good, good name.

• 36:45Speaker 02

  No, it's the perfect name.

• 36:46David Pierce?

  What's a better name?

• 36:47Speaker 00

  Virtual Reality and

• 36:49Speaker 02

  Project Neo.

• 36:50David Pierce?

  That's like their, that's Sony's play.

• 36:51Speaker 00

I know, by the way, I know Morpheus is not from The Matrix, but my assumption, but my assumption is.

• 36:59Speaker 02

It's also like, but dreaming and

• 37:01Speaker 00

Right. No, my assumption is that that was the touchstone on this one.

• 37:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:04Speaker 00

  Cause it is like

• 37:04David Pierce?

  Project Matrix would have been

• 37:05Speaker 00

Cause you do jack in on it.

• 37:06David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 37:06Speaker 00

Into it, whatever. Um, so I'm, so, so this is Sony. Sony has created a VR headset. It looks like the thing from the future. It looks like this is the thing that's on the cover of the not William Gibson novel from 1985. Like they did new art and this is the cover. It looks super duper futuristic.

• 37:24David Pierce?

I mean, I kind of feel like this is what I've always assumed the eventual Oculus Rift would look like.

• 37:29Speaker 00

Or, you know, I, of course you want to, you want to see the thing downsize. So, um, we have done some

• 37:34David Pierce?

  It's big.

• 37:34Speaker 00

We've done some reports on this and the word on the street from our, from our dudes seems to be, oh, is it, we have, can we run the demo footage? Seems to be that this thing is a contender. I don't know why it should be. I feel like this should be in the here. Well, what's what's great about this is that they didn't. This wasn't some demo, some janky demo where they're running it off a PC and who knows its prototype, whatever. Right. They're running it right on a PlayStation four. I have actually not watched this video. This could work. I have been so busy this week. I've not watched the video.

• 38:01David Pierce?

  It's so cool.

• 38:01Speaker 00

It does. It does full tracking. So, you know, you can turn your head and it uses the the tools that are already on the PlayStation four, the iToe or whatever the heck. It definitely looks a lot more comfortable than the Oculus, the way it goes around. It doesn't have like the thing that goes all the way around your sort of ears and stuff.

• 38:15David Pierce?

Well, and they're they're big on the fact that it's it's weighted to balance better on your face.

• 38:20Speaker 00

So this combination with with the move. Some of these things are called the move. It's been so long.

• 38:25David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 38:25Speaker 00

This combo is seems to me like pretty incredible.

• 38:28David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 38:28Speaker 00

I mean, I remember when we played with this on, uh, where did we do that? Where were we playing with the move?

• 38:33David Pierce?

It was on an On The Verge show one time.

• 38:35Speaker 00

It was on On The Verge.

• 38:36David Pierce?

You did the Johan Sebastian Jaus game.

• 38:38Speaker 00

No, but there was another thing that we did with the move on an older On The Verge, might have been on an Engadget show back in the day.

• 38:45David Pierce?

  He's beard stroker.

• 38:46Speaker 00

I'm just trying to remember, man. Anyhow, but the the move is like a really incredible tool, but has never been utilized well. This in a VR environment makes total sense to me.

• 38:57David Pierce?

Yeah, I mean, because that's the thing that sucks about Oculus, right? Is that it's like you're you can see everything normally, but you can't actually do anything.

• 39:03Speaker 00

But I feel like you're going to get into the situation where you've got those guys and it's like, where are my fingers? You know, you're going to want fingers.

• 39:09David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 39:10Speaker 00

They need to make a move.

• 39:12David Pierce?

Like a sword fighting game. If you can play a sword fighting game in that where you're like holding two, so I'm, this is sword fighting, slashing you to death right now.

• 39:19Speaker 00

Much more casual. Hand motion, you're naked.

• 39:23David Pierce?

  You know, those games.

• 39:23Speaker 00

  A sword fighting game.

• 39:24David Pierce?

  A sword fighting.

• 39:25Speaker 00

  Sword on like.

• 39:26David Pierce?

  I said what I said.

• 39:27Speaker 00

I'm not just, we'll edit this out in post. No, we're, yeah.

• 39:31David Pierce?

  You guys are gross.

• 39:31Speaker 00

But look, is this it here? I mean, it's virtual reality. This is so crazy. What's funny, what's funny about VR is that how much more real things look when you you add the head motion of a normal person to it. Like, like this is a regular video game graphic, but when you add that, like, that articulation of head motion to it, it it starts to like go like, oh, somebody's got a handheld camera and it kind of confuses your brain a little bit.

• 39:56David Pierce?

Right. Well, and that it's not spinning, like when you move in a game using an analog stick, you like spin really fast.

• 40:01Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 40:01David Pierce?

This moves at the right pace. It's crazy.

• 40:05Speaker 00

Sorry, I'm just taking a sip. So here's what we know. No price.

• 40:08David Pierce?

  Right.

• 40:08Speaker 02

  Not this year.

• 40:09Speaker 00

  No release date.

• 40:10Speaker 02

  Well.

• 40:10Speaker 00

  Not out this year.

• 40:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:12Speaker 00

Which is like, there's a lot of year left. And meanwhile, and so who knows what's up with this? Meanwhile, Oculus just released their final dev kit.

• 40:23Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 40:24Speaker 00

  Look at this.

• 40:24Speaker 02

It's based on the Crystal Cove.

• 40:26Speaker 00

But this is it. This is what life is all about. Getting out of life and into a virtual reality medieval world where you're battling a dragon. This is it. I'm gonna jack in so hard to this and never jack out. I'm done with you. I'm done with the world. I'm gonna have like, give me like a feeding tube, a catheter.

• 40:45David Pierce?

  Good to go.

• 40:46Speaker 00

  I'm done.

• 40:47David Pierce?

  Fair enough.

• 40:47Speaker 00

Catch you later. See you in, see you in, in the world, the virtual world that I've created. I'll only create a sick world. That's the other thing. It's gonna be called Sick World.

• 40:57David Pierce?

  Sick World?

• 40:58Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 40:59David Pierce?

We're gonna make a game called Sick World.

• 41:00Speaker 02

  We'll be good sicker.

• 41:01David Pierce?

Where it's just like a little.

• 41:01Speaker 00

No, like cool sick. Like, like skateboards everywhere, like turn the skateboard in and like cool, cool guys and girls just partying.

• 41:08Speaker 02

You're gonna gleam all the cubes.

• 41:10Speaker 00

Gleaming, there are gonna be so many, so much cube gleamage that you're not even gonna know. You don't know what Gleaming the Cube is? Let me tell you about Gleaming the Cube.

• 41:18Speaker 02

  Are you kidding?

• 41:19Speaker 00

Gleaming the Cube, let me tell you about Gleaming the Cube. Well, so do you know the story of Gleaming the Cube? Gleaming the Cube is a, is a movie from, I believe, the late eighties.

• 41:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:28Speaker 00

  Starring Christian Slater.

• 41:29Speaker 02

  Amazing.

• 41:29Speaker 00

  About skateboarding.

• 41:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:31David Pierce?

  Okay.

• 41:31Speaker 00

Okay. Gleaming the Cube is not a terminal, not skateboard terminology. Created by the writer of the movie or the director, because they thought it sounded like a cool skateboarding term.

• 41:41David Pierce?

It does. It sounds pretty rad.

• 41:42Speaker 00

  Gleaming the Cube.

• 41:43David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 41:43Speaker 00

  Anyhow.

• 41:44David Pierce?

I wanna do that with all my friends.

• 41:45Speaker 00

The film was rebroadcast on television called, for the, we've talked about this in the Vergecast before, I know it. It was rebroadcast with a different title, which is called like For the Love of a Brother, or like

• 41:56Speaker 02

  No.

• 41:57Speaker 00

Revenge of a Brother or something. Cause like, I think his brother gets killed and he has to like, he has to like revenge him with his skateboard.

• 42:03David Pierce?

Well, now I don't wanna see it.

• 42:04Speaker 00

Is this some scenes, some scenes from Gleaming the Cube? Can we see some cube gleaming here, maybe? There may be like some actual skaters in this movie, by the way.

• 42:12David Pierce?

This is a great movie poster.

• 42:14Speaker 00

Tony Hawk, Tony Hawk may be in this movie.

• 42:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:16David Pierce?

Tony Hawk should be in every movie.

• 42:19David Pierce?

Tony Hawk should be Steve Jobs.

• 42:20Speaker 00

  I actually just made a

• 42:20Speaker 02

  Tony Hawk is Steve Jobs.

• 42:21Speaker 00

I have a friend who runs a great skateboard company.

• 42:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:25Speaker 00

Yeah, it's called Scum Cone Suns. No, I'm serious. They make awesome, they make awesome shit. I'm plugging them now.

• 42:33Speaker 00

I've plugged Scum Cone Suns totally. I don't know if our audience is ready for what they've, what they have to offer. But very, very good, creative, interesting stuff.

• 42:40David Pierce?

  Good enough.

• 42:41Speaker 00

But anyhow, but this, are we still gleaming? Oh, yeah, here it is. This might be the murder scene here. Hey, gleaming the cube, boom, right there.

• 42:48David Pierce?

So they just, they were like, you know, it sounds like a cool phrase.

• 42:50Speaker 00

  Is this him?

• 42:50Speaker 02

  That's him.

• 42:52Speaker 00

There he is. He's like, come on, man, I'm gleaming the cube. That's my impersonation of Chris Sider.

• 42:57Speaker 02

You thought that was him in the film, right? There he is, just totally gleaming.

• 43:00Speaker 00

I don't know, now I kinda wanna watch this movie.

• 43:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:03Speaker 00

Anyhow, so, uh, so smartwatches. What were we talking about?

• 43:06Speaker 02

We were talking about Project Morpheus, virtual reality. So Oculus has got their second dev kit. It gets rid of most of the motion sickness. It's higher resolution, so you're not looking through a screen door.

• 43:15David Pierce?

They said it's their last one, right?

• 43:16Speaker 02

It's their last one before the consumer thing. And, and the thing Palmer, like you said, is like, look, we know what we need to do to release a consumer version now. We just, we're gonna do it, we promise. We swear.

• 43:26David Pierce?

What does that mean? What does he need to do? Like make it more better?

• 43:30Speaker 02

A dev kit, make it a real thing.

• 43:32David Pierce?

Make lots of them and then sell them for money?

• 43:35Speaker 02

The, the controls, like their grand unified, how we control virtual reality isn't figured out. And I don't think it's gonna be by the time they release it, but it's better, it's good.

• 43:44David Pierce?

I feel like nobody really knows the answer to that.

• 43:45Speaker 02

It's still a dev kit. I forget how much it costs. It's like 1500.

• 43:48David Pierce?

I mean, that's kinda why I'm psyched that Sony's doing this, cuz Sony has all of the other pieces around it that'll just work. Like if you have a PlayStation and you buy this thing, it just drops into the system that you have.

• 43:57Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 43:57David Pierce?

That's really cool. Like that would make me buy a PlayStation just because.

• 44:02Speaker 02

You know what I don't do? Game on my PC.

• 44:04Speaker 00

Yeah, no, I'm not, that's the thing. Yeah.

• 44:06Speaker 02

  I gotta say, I'm

• 44:07Speaker 00

  350. Why did I think 1500?

• 44:08Speaker 02

  350 bucks.

• 44:09David Pierce?

  100 million dollars.

• 44:11Speaker 02

I know. The dev kit too is 350 bucks, it's coming this July.

• 44:14Speaker 00

It's really uncool what's happening over here.

• 44:16Speaker 02

I mean, I mean, at least Oculus is shipping to real humans. Sony just like

• 44:19David Pierce?

  That's something.

• 44:20Speaker 02

You know, is showing something off.

• 44:21Speaker 00

Which when Sony is, but Sony's product is going to be, I mean, it's

• 44:25Speaker 02

  It'll work on a PlayStation 4.

• 44:26Speaker 00

  Also looks like a, it's a product.

• 44:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:28David Pierce?

  Right.

• 44:28Speaker 00

Like, like, we don't know when Oculus is going to release their, um, consumer version.

• 44:34Speaker 02

  Right.

• 44:34Speaker 00

Or if there's going to be a consumer version anytime in the near future. Uh, presumably there will be. I hope there will be. Oh, is this, what is this? Oh, this is this from the Engadget show? Oh, yeah, here we go. This is some classic, look at me without a beard.

• 44:47David Pierce?

  OG job.

• 44:48Speaker 00

Disturbing and shocking. I got a little bit of something going on there.

• 44:51David Pierce?

  You can play Steve Jobs.

• 44:53Speaker 00

This is like before the move was actually released, I believe. Through the days.

• 44:57David Pierce?

What do you, you're sword fighting.

• 44:58Speaker 00

  I like, yeah, we are.

• 44:59David Pierce?

You know what everybody wants to do with these things is sword fight.

• 45:01Speaker 00

Yeah, I actually do some, uh, what am I? That is why I bought a Wii. What is, what am I? What am I doing? Yeah. It was a huge disappointment.

• 45:08David Pierce?

I bought it for tennis. And that was cool.

• 45:09Speaker 00

This is for the old days. Maybe I should shave my beard.

• 45:13Speaker 00

Oh yeah, they, I kind of like broke the sense or they were not loving this. Yeah.

• 45:19David Pierce?

This, this seems like it went super great for everybody involved.

• 45:21Speaker 00

Just put it in my pocket.

• 45:24Speaker 00

Super great. Oh yeah, this is what happens is this sword just floats. I put it away.

• 45:33Speaker 00

That's classic stuff. I don't know where that Sony logo came from.

• 45:35David Pierce?

I think presumably it's gotten slightly better since then.

• 45:37Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 45:39Speaker 02

Did you see this other thing that, uh, that was even a real? Did you see this other demo that Sony did, uh, Sean did at GDC? So they've, they did an eye tracking demo where like you, you, you, you calibrate it by just looking at a couple of dots and then it will, you can play the video game just by looking at stuff.

• 45:52Speaker 00

  NSA man.

• 45:53Speaker 02

And it's way closer. And so like instead of having to move around with your second joystick, you just look at the thing you want to shoot a fireball at and then hit the button.

• 46:00Speaker 00

  I don't get it.

• 46:01Speaker 02

So you can look at it directly.

• 46:01Speaker 00

Why would you want to do that?

• 46:03Speaker 02

Cause you don't have to steer then.

• 46:04Speaker 00

Hand eye coordination is like what drives human innovation. Without that, I'm just like, like, how am I gonna, you know, look, oh, hey, can you make dinner? Like, sorry, my, I can't do that anymore. Cause my hand eye coordination is blown. Cause now I just look at things to get them. That's what's gonna happen in the future. It's gonna be like, like, hey, it's time to prepare. Like, it's breakfast time. Can you scramble some eggs? And it's like, nope. Because I have no hand eye coordination. Cause I'm used to just going like this all the time.

• 46:29David Pierce?

I'm not sure you understand what hand eye coordination is.

• 46:31Speaker 00

That's like. I understand it all too well. I understand perfectly. Like you are able to like, look at things and do things with your hand. And now you're just looking at things.

• 46:40David Pierce?

  No, but.

• 46:40Speaker 00

That's what you would normally do with your hand.

• 46:42David Pierce?

It's just like, he legitimately is just doing this with his eyes.

• 46:45Speaker 02

Looking at a thing and now he's gonna look at another thing and.

• 46:47David Pierce?

  This game is apparently awesome.

• 46:48Speaker 02

Yeah. And you can aim with pinpoint precision because you just look at the thing you want to shoot at.

• 46:51David Pierce?

This would make me so much better at games. Cause the thing I suck at is like I'm moving while I shoot.

• 46:57Speaker 02

But they would make the games harder.

• 46:58Speaker 00

I don't like this at all.

• 46:59Speaker 02

  Because you can never win.

• 47:00David Pierce?

They will find new ways for me to suck at the new games.

• 47:02Speaker 00

This is cool, but I don't like it.

• 47:04David Pierce?

  The Josh Popolsky.

• 47:06Speaker 02

  The Josh Popolsky story.

• 47:09Speaker 00

This is pretty cool. Look at this guy just shooting that dinosaur. Why are you shooting the dinosaur? What did he do? He's already dead. Leave him alone. It's Sean, actually. I'm like yelling at Sean through the TV. Sean, leave that dinosaur alone.

• 47:21David Pierce?

  Poor dinosaur.

• 47:22Speaker 00

It's fun. Look at this, like, what is the second son?

• 47:24David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 47:24Speaker 00

  This game looks really stupid.

• 47:27David Pierce?

  Apparently it's great.

• 47:28Speaker 00

Well, you know how I feel.

• 47:29David Pierce?

  Everybody says.

• 47:30Speaker 00

It looks, seems cool, but I hate it. But I don't like it. Seems cool, but I don't like it.

• 47:34David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 47:34Speaker 00

Um, all right. Anyhow, so this is an exciting time, though. Here's what I'll say about the VR stuff. It's like really happening.

• 47:40David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 47:41Speaker 00

Like, maybe it's not going to be another, you know, Power Glove situation.

• 47:46David Pierce?

  It's like really almost happening.

• 47:48Speaker 00

Well, no, but I mean, I really want it to happen, happen.

• 47:50David Pierce?

But really almost happening is a lot better than not happening at all. Yeah. No, but and I feel that's true. Well said. No, but I feel like the, with Oculus, it was always kind of a, like a neat idea that was never gonna really be huge.

• 48:02Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 48:03David Pierce?

And with, like, a company like Sony can, like, do this.

• 48:06Speaker 00

No, they can do it. This is the Sony that Sony needs to be.

• 48:10David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 48:10Speaker 00

Except they should have done this before Oculus.

• 48:12David Pierce?

Yeah. I mean, they say they've been working on it for three years.

• 48:14Speaker 00

They should have bought, they have something.

• 48:15David Pierce?

They should have given Oculus a billion dollars. I bet Microsoft is gonna buy Oculus now and be like, two years ago at CES, they had a thing.

• 48:21Speaker 00

That is so serious. And it's already PC compatible, so it's a short walk to paradise.

• 48:25David Pierce?

  They're in.

• 48:26Speaker 00

So on and so forth. Or Sony will buy them, thus making it harder for Microsoft.

• 48:31David Pierce?

  Sony will buy Microsoft.

• 48:31Speaker 00

Or Oculus won't sell, because they got all that cash money.

• 48:34David Pierce?

  That's true.

• 48:35Speaker 00

Seventy-five mil just sitting on it.

• 48:37David Pierce?

That's right. I forgot about that.

• 48:38Speaker 00

Yeah, you forgot all about their seventy-five million dollar investment. Those seventy-five million dollars to Sony, Sony, Sony loses seventy-five million in these seat cushions.

• 48:46David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 48:46Speaker 00

Of their, of their gigantic Hummer limousine. Because that's what Sony drives around.

• 48:54David Pierce?

I saw Nelly Furtado at the Sony building one time. Fun fact.

• 48:57Speaker 00

Nelly Furtado, fun fact. That's a fact.

• 48:59David Pierce?

  It's a fact.

• 48:59Speaker 00

Every time I hear her name, I just think about, I think about Furtado. It's my problem. And I just think like, I'm thinking, like, I was talking about Omel's before, but you know, I just, I just, Furtado just sounds like, if you think about it, I just said it, it sounded like Furtado to me.

• 49:12David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 49:13Speaker 00

Anyhow, not important, not an interesting point, not, not anything that anybody should ever hear somebody say.

• 49:19David Pierce?

Also not a fun fact, just a fact.

• 49:20Speaker 00

Did you just check your watch? I got an alert.

• 49:23David Pierce?

  So, okay.

• 49:23Speaker 00

  Mr. Mr.

• 49:24Speaker 02

  What do you want?

• 49:25Speaker 00

  Mr. Smartwatch over here.

• 49:26David Pierce?

  So I was sitting.

• 49:26Speaker 00

I got an alert on my Asha, okay? Let me just get to that in several minutes.

• 49:31Speaker 02

It was the worst alert ever.

• 49:32Speaker 00

  Several minutes. What was it?

• 49:32Speaker 02

It was, it was that your, your L train to Brooklyn is not backed up right now.

• 49:37David Pierce?

  Womp womp.

• 49:38Speaker 00

That's okay, because you're not going to be on the L train for quite a while.

• 49:40Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 49:40Speaker 00

We had a long night ahead of us. Just get ready.

• 49:42David Pierce?

No, but that's the thing that sucks about smartwatches. I was sitting, having dinner with my parents a couple of weeks ago, wearing my pedal. And I kept looking every time I got a notification. And my mom got like mad at me. She was like, do you have somewhere to be? Like, why are you, and I was like, no, I just keep getting emails. And it's like either that or pull out my phone. But it was like deeply offensive that I just kept looking at my watch being like, I gotta go.

• 50:01Speaker 02

Well, no, people just need to, once people get used to the idea that notifications are watches, then the social signal of looking at your watch will no longer be like, when can I get the hell out of here?

• 50:09David Pierce?

But like right now, that's more offensive than like pulling my phone out of my pocket.

• 50:13Speaker 02

  Where my photos?

• 50:13David Pierce?

  Which is crazy.

• 50:14Speaker 00

  I'm gonna tweet a photo.

• 50:15David Pierce?

  Josh, what are you doing?

• 50:16Speaker 00

I'm gonna try to tweet a photo from here. Do you think I can tweet a photo from the Asha?

• 50:19Speaker 02

I think that if we have another 20 minutes, we're loading right now.

• 50:23Speaker 00

Oh my god. Huh? Let's see if I can tweet an Asha photo. It's pretty bad. It's a pretty bad photo.

• 50:30David Pierce?

  It's like two megapixels, right?

• 50:31Speaker 00

It's two megapixels. All right, here we go. Here we go. Tweet. Can I add? Oh my god, I can. This is crazy.

• 50:39Speaker 02

This is, this is really good Verge casting right now.

• 50:41Speaker 00

Listen, this is classic Verge casting.

• 50:45Speaker 00

All right, just loading my gallery here.

• 50:46David Pierce?

This is all I've wanted to know about all week.

• 50:47Speaker 02

If you were to send me a DM from that, it wouldn't be encrypted.

• 50:51Speaker 02

Trying to make a transition while we're waiting.

• 50:53Speaker 00

I don't know what that means.

• 50:54Speaker 02

Twitter gave up on encrypting direct messages. Because they got other stuff to do.

• 50:58David Pierce?

Yeah, Twitter's like, oh, we're busy.

• 51:00Speaker 00

Oh yeah, right. Are we talking about that? Uh oh, hold on, I typed out. Hard to type on a physical keyboard. This is working? I can't tell if this is working or not. It's loading. Guys say the Asha, not for people who are in a hurry.

• 51:14David Pierce?

  Or for people recording podcasts.

• 51:15Speaker 00

If you're in a hurry, don't worry about it. It's cool. These guys are used to this.

• 51:20Speaker 02

That should be their slogan. Chill out.

• 51:21Speaker 00

Is this not load the picture?

• 51:23David Pierce?

You also definitely just tweeted, cool pic and no picture.

• 51:27Speaker 00

  No? Oh, retweet.

• 51:29David Pierce?

Uh, one of the best tweets ever.

• 51:31Speaker 00

I gotta do. I hate you guys so much. Hold on a second. Thanks a lot, Asha. Everybody, please retweet Josh. Old school retweet in case he deletes it.

• 51:38David Pierce?

No, yeah, that's a good point.

• 51:39Speaker 00

  Come on, man.

• 51:39David Pierce?

  I'm doing, I'm doing both.

• 51:41Speaker 00

I'm not, I'm not deleting it. I'm, but trust me, guys. I'm in for the long haul. Hold on. This is good stuff. We've just created a viral moment here on the Vergecast.

• 51:52David Pierce?

Oh, no. I just got, there was an error posting your message. That was a duplicate.

• 51:55Speaker 00

Oh, no. What? No, you went too fast.

• 51:57David Pierce?

  Too many times.

• 51:58Speaker 00

  You went too fast.

• 52:00Speaker 00

Just wait till you see the pic I'm actually going to post. You guys aren't, not gonna be very happy about it. I bet not. You're gonna feel, you're gonna feel like, you know, intense comeuppance. There's so many people tweeting this and retweeting it. I hate, I hate everybody.

• 52:16Speaker 00

It's cool. Let's make this the most retweeted tweet ever, guys. Yeah, that'll work. Let's beat the Oscar tweet.

• 52:21David Pierce?

God, if it could just be, cool pic was the most popular tweet of all time.

• 52:25Speaker 00

I think it's gonna happen now. Yeah. Wow. Where is it? Just, we're looking at your, um.

• 52:32David Pierce?

Everybody's like a little bit mad at you.

• 52:34Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm. I like it.

• 52:35David Pierce?

  A cool pic.

• 52:35Speaker 00

  Oh, there it is.

• 52:36David Pierce?

Uh, look at all those megapixels.

• 52:38Speaker 00

What? This is it. This is it. The Asha. This is what the Asha does. What's going on with my hair? I don't know. It's like weirdly flat.

• 52:45David Pierce?

It's causing me to leap out of my chair.

• 52:47Speaker 00

You're like, I'm out of here. That's the expression.

• 52:49David Pierce?

  I, yeah.

• 52:50Speaker 00

  Hmm.

• 52:51David Pierce?

  I'm also.

• 52:51Speaker 00

Close application. No. Hold on. Thanks. Oh, no. Hanks. That's all I want.

• 52:59David Pierce?

Tom Hanks. Also good Steve Jobs candidate.

• 53:01Speaker 00

No. Um, you guys wanna talk about Elon Musk before we get out of here? I just tried to touch the screen.

• 53:08David Pierce?

  Don't do that.

• 53:10Speaker 00

And New Jersey? Yeah, Elon Musk. Let's talk about him. Sorry, guys. This is more important than this Vergecast. It's me doing an Asha tweet.

• 53:17David Pierce?

  It is.

• 53:17Speaker 00

So basically, so T, so Elon Musk, so, so Jersey, uh, was like, hey, we're gonna ban direct sales to consumers of, uh, of, uh.

• 53:26David Pierce?

  Tesla.

• 53:26Speaker 00

Tesla. Yeah, manufacturers can't. New Jersey. All bad, all carbon. New Jersey has a, has a law that you can't sell vehicles. Yep. Directly to a consumer.

• 53:36David Pierce?

Yeah, and so they, they didn't.

• 53:38Speaker 00

  They're not the only place.

• 53:38David Pierce?

Like, this rule is not new for Tesla. They just, Tesla's been sort of skirting it and avoiding it. And they came out and they're like, we're gonna enforce this now, so get out. And Elon Musk kinda went nuts in the way only billionaires like Elon Musk are allowed to.

• 53:52Speaker 00

Just so you know, I mean, he was basically like, you know what's stupid is New Jersey. They're all the mafia. The cool pick has.

• 53:58David Pierce?

It's like basically what he said.

• 54:00Speaker 00

Can I just say something? Sorry. The original cool pick has 77, 78, 78 retweets. It just went up twice while I was trying to tell you that. 78 retweets, 44 favorites. I'm really glad to know that I can tell people what to do.

• 54:14David Pierce?

What are we like halfway to Elon Musk's tweet?

• 54:16Speaker 00

Come on, guys. I want it to be the most retweeted tweet ever.

• 54:20David Pierce?

They can't even get S60 on that thing.

• 54:21Speaker 00

I wanna break 200, at least 200. Show me what you got. Okay. Anyhow, so Elon Musk, yeah. So, so Ben Popper went and talked to some people.

• 54:32Speaker 02

Including Jim Appleton, president of the New Jersey Coalition of Automobile Retailers.

• 54:36David Pierce?

Who really just had some things to say.

• 54:38Speaker 00

Can we hear a little bit from him?

• 54:40Speaker 02

He needs to stop and take a breath. If you're an internet billionaire, I'm not gonna try and do a Jersey accent.

• 54:44Speaker 00

  Don't do a Jersey accent.

• 54:45Speaker 02

If you're an internet billionaire, maybe you think the world revolves around you and the world springs from your laptop. Well, I got news for him. This is not a new law. Tesla is operating illegally and as of April 1st, they'll be out of business unless they decide to open a franchise.

• 54:59David Pierce?

That sounds really outrageous, but he's 100% accurate.

• 55:01Speaker 00

You on down. No, it's insane actually, but this whole concept is totally insane.

• 55:07David Pierce?

  Oh, it's crazy.

• 55:08Speaker 02

Guy from a BMW dealership, they wanna go direct, which means a sales force that's cutting out a lot of people. No way that's gonna fly.

• 55:14Speaker 00

Yeah, because we invented some fake rule about needing to sell cars through middlemen.

• 55:18David Pierce?

Well, it was, it was, it's this old rule that was designed to like help car dealers catch, or car dealerships catch on in New Jersey. They're like, we wanna sell lots of cars. And now it's a stupid rule.

• 55:27Speaker 00

I mean, it's, it's, it's just like, you know what? Free market. Let it happen.

• 55:31David Pierce?

Like they're trying to prevent like what everybody was trying to prevent Amazon from doing.

• 55:35Speaker 00

  It's just like.

• 55:35David Pierce?

Selling directly to people for less money.

• 55:37Speaker 00

I'm sorry, but, but, and by the way, I just goes for anybody. I'm like, I'm surprised that, why can't I buy a car from Volkswagen directly from them?

• 55:46David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 55:46Speaker 00

Why do I have to go through a middleman? Like, why don't I just go and get the car from a Volkswagen? Like, the whole dealership concept seems totally bunged to me. I mean, also, have you ever been to a car dealer?

• 55:58David Pierce?

  That's awful.

• 55:58Speaker 00

Have you ever been to a showroom?

• 56:00Speaker 02

  That's super fun.

• 56:00Speaker 00

It's not a good experience. I just went to one. And it was.

• 56:04David Pierce?

  You buying a car?

• 56:04Speaker 00

  What? I'm looking. I own a car.

• 56:06David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 56:08Speaker 00

  You're like shocked.

• 56:09David Pierce?

You're like, I need eight more cars.

• 56:10Speaker 00

I'm shell shocked that I'm, no, I'm thinking about getting, you know, I'm a dad now and I need a bigger car and I want a nicer car.

• 56:16David Pierce?

You're gonna get like a nice Honda Odyssey.

• 56:18Speaker 00

My car's paid off, so I can do whatever I want.

• 56:21David Pierce?

I could see you rocking a minivan.

• 56:22Speaker 00

I'm not gonna rock a minivan.

• 56:23David Pierce?

I can see you rocking a minivan.

• 56:24Speaker 00

I'm not rocking a minivan. I think you're very confused about who you're talking to right now.

• 56:27David Pierce?

Listen, you're a dad now, Josh.

• 56:29Speaker 00

  Come on.

• 56:30David Pierce?

  You can only be.

• 56:30Speaker 00

Just autos dot AOL dot com. The number one best thing on AOL is their auto comparison tool.

• 56:35David Pierce?

Look at that Chrysler Town and Country.

• 56:38Speaker 00

You missed the obvious thing about this picture, by the way.

• 56:40David Pierce?

You stick your head out there, you're like, hey ladies.

• 56:41Speaker 00

  I hate your guts.

• 56:41David Pierce?

Who even knows? Who knows what happens?

• 56:43Speaker 00

I hate you so much. I say hate you so much, it's not even funny.

• 56:46David Pierce?

You get this in like a sleek, black, like just murdered out rims.

• 56:51Speaker 00

You're the worst person in the world.

• 56:52David Pierce?

This would be incredible. I might buy you this car.

• 56:53Speaker 00

You're like the guy, you're like the guy at the end of True Detective, that's how bad you are. You're like the bad guy from True Detective.

• 56:59David Pierce?

Look at that, look at that engine. That's serious business.

• 57:01Speaker 00

  You're Errol, you're Errol.

• 57:01David Pierce?

  That is serious business.

• 57:03Speaker 00

Spoiler alert, spoiler alert. You don't know who Errol is if you're watching True Detective, but that's who you are. Spoiler alert, by the way. Spoiler alert, sorry guys.

• 57:09David Pierce?

This car is just hot. Like it probably has driver assist, it'll park for you.

• 57:13Speaker 00

You have to do, you have to do a hashtag. Well, I don't, I was trying. You don't do, you don't do True Detective Season 2 without a hashtag, my man. Okay, you need to step into the zone of knowledge.

• 57:25David Pierce?

  I mean, come on, Josh.

• 57:26Speaker 00

Please step into the zone of knowledge.

• 57:26David Pierce?

Silver could work. What about like a yellow?

• 57:28Speaker 00

Hold on, let me check in on these retweets.

• 57:30David Pierce?

I can get you like yellow Town and Country.

• 57:31Speaker 00

Hundred and thirteen retweets, fifty-six likes. Step it up. I should delete the other one. It's probably sucking energy away from that other tweet.

• 57:38David Pierce?

  It's true. You don't wanna.

• 57:40Speaker 00

  Thirty-nine on that one.

• 57:41David Pierce?

You don't wanna split the heat.

• 57:42Speaker 00

I don't get it. I don't get this at all. People love the Asha. Everyone's going crazy for it. Series forty, man, forever and ever. It's the best.

• 57:49David Pierce?

If you use that in your minivan, you'll be the coolest guy.

• 57:52Speaker 00

  It's just S forty.

• 57:56Speaker 00

What is this? Please, please, I can't read that. Well, sometimes you don't wanna put things into. Zone of knowledge. You don't wanna. I see you're very clever, cause you hashtagged it. Yeah. Very clever. You can't watch The Vergecast unless you're also watching our Twitter streams. Otherwise, these jokes make no sense. And you can't watch The Vergecast unless you're also high and or drunk. Right. So.

• 58:17David Pierce?

  Ideally and.

• 58:18Speaker 00

And if you are, if you are watching Twitter, you're high. Ideally, you're candy flipping. You're drunk. You could run a car dealership in New Jersey. What? Oh yeah, right. Anyhow, you should read this piece that Ben did, it's great. Candy flipping, in case you're wondering, is taking acid and ecstasy at the same time. What is this? What is this? Now we owe Auto Pay like a thousand dollars for the use of this incredible clip. Josh, I'm saying like- It's starting to come around to the minivan. I don't know if the Chrysler is-

• 58:44David Pierce?

Like a boss stereo system, like you would be the man.

• 58:47Speaker 00

I don't know if the Chrysler is the right one for you.

• 58:49David Pierce?

The man in a minivan is like a blog I'm gonna write.

• 58:51Speaker 00

  You're the single worst person.

• 58:52David Pierce?

Pictures of you in a minivan.

• 58:53Speaker 00

Josh is in a minivan. He's not a town and country man. I think you're like an Astro van kind of guy. Let me tell you what I'm looking for.

• 58:58David Pierce?

  Or like an Aztec.

• 58:59Speaker 00

PT Cruiser. Can we get a PT Cruiser? It's got all the storage, all the storage rooms, storage, storage and storage. It's got all the room that I need.

• 59:10David Pierce?

  What about like a Scion?

• 59:11Speaker 00

  Honda Odyssey.

• 59:12David Pierce?

We could like pimp out a Scion for you. Can we bring back pimp my ride for Josh Topolsky? Is that?

• 59:18Speaker 00

  No.

• 59:18David Pierce?

Is that a thing we could do?

• 59:19Speaker 00

  No.

• 59:20David Pierce?

No. You could get like a river in your backseat?

• 59:22Speaker 00

No. Can I answer a question? Somebody just asked me on Twitter. Somebody just asked me a question on Twitter. Do I use any music streaming services? Oh, God. Well, it's funny you should ask that. Actually, I use all the music streaming services. How many are you paying for right now? Spotify and Audio and also, I don't pay for Google.

• 59:38David Pierce?

I'm accidentally paying for Beats. I discovered that yesterday.

• 59:39Speaker 00

  I'm playing for Google, Pandora.

• 59:41David Pierce?

  You pay for Pandora?

• 59:42Speaker 00

Beats and Spotify right now. Wait, you pay for Beats? I like did it and I haven't turned it off yet. Beats is too closed of a system.

• 59:50David Pierce?

  Cancel Beats.

• 59:51Speaker 00

Beats is too closed. There's a new Sonos app out. You know, I'm a big fan of Sonos.

• 59:56David Pierce?

  It's really nice.

• 59:57Speaker 00

New Sonos app, universal search, which is a killer feature. So now you can plug in all of your different music sources, Pandora, Spotify, Audio, whatever. And you can search. Sorry, this Diet Coke is very bubbly.

• 1:00:11David Pierce?

No, the search used to be really bad. You'd be like, I want to find this only on Pandora.

• 1:00:14Speaker 00

And now it's awesome and it's super exciting. And that's a big deal for me personally. But yeah, I, I, I, I subscribe. Sorry. I'm just, I got talked into some tweets and I was very confused. I subscribe to a bunch of services and I'm just throwing my money down the drain, just throwing it away into the garbage.

• 1:00:33David Pierce?

  Which one do you use?

• 1:00:34Speaker 00

  I use-

• 1:00:35David Pierce?

  Most. What's your like default?

• 1:00:36Speaker 00

Audio I use a lot. Audio is my default.

• 1:00:38David Pierce?

Audio is just pretty. Audio is just better looking.

• 1:00:40Speaker 00

But you'll find that if you follow me on Audio, which I hope that you don't. If you follow me on audio, your

• 1:00:47David Pierce?

  I'm not even

• 1:00:48Speaker 00

Your, your feed has been overrun with white noise. Cause I've been, the baby loves white noise.

• 1:00:54David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:54Speaker 00

And we're paying, we have like two main white noise jams. It's, it's business class, which is the sound of business.

• 1:00:59David Pierce?

  No way.

• 1:01:00Speaker 00

It's really great. And then, uh, there's another one. It's like, um, it's like, it's like, yeah, here we go. What's the, what's the one with the, the was purply one to the left?

• 1:01:08David Pierce?

  White Noise Therapy, volume one.

• 1:01:10Speaker 00

  Yeah. What's my main track?

• 1:01:11David Pierce?

  What?

• 1:01:12Speaker 00

  Yeah. Just let's

• 1:01:13David Pierce?

Have you heard of, um, This is amazing.

• 1:01:16Speaker 00

Oh, you got a lot. Did you hear about this, uh, this, this album that Wolfpack posted on Spotify? It's, it's called Sleepify. It is a full album of silence, complete and total silence.

• 1:01:27David Pierce?

  Very cage of them.

• 1:01:28Speaker 00

And so they want you to like, before you go to sleep, hit play and repeat on the album. And then they're funding their tour with it.

• 1:01:34David Pierce?

Hundred and thirty one retweets. That's kind of awesome.

• 1:01:36Speaker 00

Well, let's take it, let's take it to two hundred.

• 1:01:37David Pierce?

  Super clever.

• 1:01:40Speaker 00

Is there anything else to talk about? We just listen here in Google.

• 1:01:43David Pierce?

  I'm just searching white noise.

• 1:01:44Speaker 00

We get some white noise going.

• 1:01:46David Pierce?

There's a band called White Noise that makes like music, which is

• 1:01:49Speaker 00

So I have a, so I have an announcement to make.

• 1:01:51David Pierce?

  Oh. Oh, yeah.

• 1:01:52Speaker 00

  Exciting.

• 1:01:53David Pierce?

  You're buying a mini

• 1:01:54Speaker 00

  Now, I don't know. I'm reconsidering.

• 1:01:55David Pierce?

  The proud owner.

• 1:01:56Speaker 00

We've got, we've got the gasoline right there.

• 1:01:59David Pierce?

  Such a fun Vergecast.

• 1:02:00Speaker 00

You gotta, um, so here's my, are you ready? Everybody get ready, Vergecast listeners. Well, it's not, we don't have to get crazy about it or anything. So, so we're gonna

• 1:02:11David Pierce?

  On my computer.

• 1:02:11Speaker 00

People are gonna like, people are gonna like freak out on me now. I can just tell.

• 1:02:15David Pierce?

Yeah. I mean, you just gotta do it. Just tear off the band.

• 1:02:18Speaker 00

  Don't do it. Or don't. It's just, it's just, I just don't, I don't think I should.

• 1:02:22David Pierce?

  Don't do it.

• 1:02:23Speaker 00

  I don't think I should do it. I shouldn't say anything.

• 1:02:25David Pierce?

  You have to now.

• 1:02:25Speaker 00

  No, let's just keep going.

• 1:02:26David Pierce?

  You have to now.

• 1:02:27Speaker 00

Just keep going. No. Okay. So, hey, listen, we're gonna put the Vergecast on a, on a hiatus.

• 1:02:33Speaker 00

We're gonna, we're gonna postpone, not postpone, we're going to halt. What is hiatus? What are some synonyms for hiatus? Can we get some up on the viewscreen? Pause. We're going to pause. Let me just see what's going on Twitter right now.

• 1:02:45David Pierce?

  Pause, break.

• 1:02:46Speaker 00

We're gonna take a break. We're gonna take a little

• 1:02:48David Pierce?

  Lacuna?

• 1:02:48Speaker 00

Vergecast Lacuna. We're gonna take a Lacuna.

• 1:02:51David Pierce?

  A recess? Recession's pretty good.

• 1:02:52Speaker 00

We're gonna take a recess. Yeah, we're gonna pause in the Vergecast. So here's the thing, Vergecast's been going since the, actually like

• 1:02:59David Pierce?

  A hundred years ago.

• 1:03:00Speaker 00

So, so we started a podcast at Engadget. They used to have a podcast. And when I became editor in chief, Neel I was like, we should start up the podcast again because they hadn't been going on. And this is in 2008. We started doing the Engadget podcast again. And, uh, you know, it was, it was, you know, insane. Uh, it was fun and

• 1:03:20David Pierce?

  A lot of yelling.

• 1:03:20Speaker 00

We did it there for years and then we, then we in between Engadget and, and, uh, The Verge, we did, this is my next podcast. Which was a

• 1:03:28David Pierce?

This is amazing, by the way.

• 1:03:28Speaker 00

  Which was a continuation.

• 1:03:30Speaker 02

  Oh, wow. Look at that.

• 1:03:31Speaker 00

This is like old school. Look at our old office. There's nothing on the shelves. Uh, I'm getting like teary eyed.

• 1:03:35David Pierce?

  I know.

• 1:03:36Speaker 00

Look how shiny I am. My God. Let me dab that forehead. It's unbelievable.

• 1:03:40David Pierce?

  There was actually the whole

• 1:03:41Speaker 00

My hair looks incredible. I feel like this was, I feel like this was the day of our photo shoot or something.

• 1:03:45David Pierce?

Your beard is like really, it's neat.

• 1:03:47Speaker 00

  I look really, really good.

• 1:03:48David Pierce?

  You're very put together.

• 1:03:49Speaker 00

It's that. I don't know what just happened there. Anyhow, so then we, we went from, we went from, from Engadget to, to doing the, this is my next. Oh my God, look at Paul. Look at Neel I. His hair is crazy.

• 1:04:00David Pierce?

  They're like 14 years old.

• 1:04:01Speaker 00

Everybody looks 14 in this, in this image. This is, The Verge has aged us all. And, uh, and then we went into, we went to, from that, and then when The Vergecast, we've been doing this for like, you know, two years. Over two years, over two years. And I just think, I just realized like, hey, you know, we are, we did the last couple, I was with TC and Katie. And, uh, we were like talking about things that weren't gadgets news, weren't technology and we were like getting drunk. It was completely insane. I went on a thing about, you know, George Bush being as bad as Hitler or something like that. You know, this kind of things I say when I've had a glass of wine. I actually didn't say that.

• 1:04:35Speaker 02

  Did you actually say that?

• 1:04:36Speaker 00

I didn't say that. I actually didn't say that. What I said was, what I said was,

• 1:04:39David Pierce?

That's like two glasses of wine.

• 1:04:41Speaker 00

I think what I said was Fox News is the worst thing to happen to journalism since Hitler controlled newspapers.

• 1:04:48David Pierce?

That doesn't make a lot of sense.

• 1:04:49Speaker 00

No, it makes perfect sense because they're a propaganda machine. And anyhow, so like, I was just like, you know what? Like, I'd kind of want to rethink, like, what can we do at the Vergecast? We, what can we try that we haven't done? Like, are there different things that can happen on the Vergecast? Could we try new things? We would be doing video where like, it's just three people sitting around in a room. Maybe we could be doing video from locations. Maybe we could be, who knows? I don't know. So anyhow, so we're gonna put the, my Twitter feed is.

• 1:05:20David Pierce?

  Is everybody mad?

• 1:05:21Speaker 00

Pretty good. Seem really upset. Um, so we're gonna put on hiatus for a little while. And, and retool, rework, it's happening out there. Reconfigure, re rethink, and then ultimately reboot into the next generation. Is anybody with me here? I'm with you. It's gonna be good. And honestly, like, and part of this is driven by like, a desire to retool and reboot. But then a part of it is also like, I have a baby right now and it's a brand new baby. And there's like, work is really super duper busy.

• 1:05:50David Pierce?

You have a lot of minivan shopping.

• 1:05:51Speaker 00

We're doing all kinds of insane things. And so like, you know, it's just like, we, I'd love a little bit of time to like, rethink it. And anyhow, so that's the news. People are very upset. Let me give you some. It's just a lacuna, guys. It's just a hiatus. This news fucking blows is something, something. Oh yeah, this was a nightmare. This was, this was a big one of our mistakes ever. This, I remember this. Very dark. Um.

• 1:06:17David Pierce?

A lot of angry looking people sitting there right now.

• 1:06:19Speaker 00

Somebody said, I'm retiring, take care of kids and travel the world in a minivan. I'm not doing that. David, thanks a lot for planting that.

• 1:06:25David Pierce?

Josh is buying a Town and Country. You heard it here first.

• 1:06:27Speaker 00

This guy, this guy just discovered, one person just discovered that it was, it was, I was the person who messed up their audio feed with my white noise. Um, anyhow. So yeah, so that's, that's it. That's the news. It's not that, really not that big of a deal. I don't, and I don't know how long the hiatus will be. Plus, it made me remember the word lacuna and so it was all worth it. We're totally lacuna. Yeah.

• 1:06:48David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:48Speaker 00

We're going to be on the. Lacuna batata. No, get out. Um, so anyhow, so we're gonna take a little break and then we're gonna come back.

• 1:06:55David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:55Speaker 00

  It's gonna be amazing.

• 1:06:56David Pierce?

  It's gonna be even better.

• 1:06:57Speaker 00

And. Is there anything else? That we need to?

• 1:07:00David Pierce?

  No.

• 1:07:00Speaker 00

I mean, is there any other news?

• 1:07:01David Pierce?

I mean, we can't top that.

• 1:07:03Speaker 00

Can't, can't we? So, hey, actually, here's a great thing that you, if you guys love the Vergecast and watch the Vergecast, and you are bummed because we're taking a break to rethink it, send an email. This is actually a great segue. Send an email, start a forum thread. So there actually are some good, like, interesting forum threads about Vergecast. Like, maybe we could try this, maybe we could do that. Like, here's an opportunity. I would love to hear from people who've watched it for a long time, who want to see it, and are thinking about, like, what they might like to see on it.

• 1:07:33Speaker 00

  You know?

• 1:07:33David Pierce?

  Tell us.

• 1:07:34Speaker 00

Give us ideas. Give us, tell us what you want to see. Tell us what you think will be cool. Because we kind of have an amazing opportunity. We have, like, this incredible video team. We have a wonderful staff here. And like, you know, we're, we're just doing like the bare minimum that we've always done, basically, which is like, three people sitting in a room bullshitting. Which is great. You know, I totally get it. Like, but-

• 1:07:52David Pierce?

  We'll keep doing it.

• 1:07:52Speaker 00

We're gonna, where there's gonna be some variation of that.

• 1:07:54Speaker 02

  We'll never stop bullshitting.

• 1:07:56Speaker 00

Bullshitting is going to continue happening.

• 1:07:57David Pierce?

  There will be bullshitting.

• 1:07:58Speaker 00

Somebody asked how long the break's gonna be. I don't really know. I don't think it's gonna be, you know, super duper long. But it probably won't be super short either. Is that helpful?

• 1:08:07David Pierce?

  Thanks, Josh.

• 1:08:08Speaker 00

  Is that helpful at all?

• 1:08:09Speaker 02

I guess I should point out, I mean, we haven't done the Verge mobile show in a couple of weeks. We're gonna do one, or do something. We'll do something next week, probably.

• 1:08:16David Pierce?

  Next week, yeah.

• 1:08:17Speaker 02

  But we're also-

• 1:08:18Speaker 00

You're gonna hiatus? You're gonna Lacuna?

• 1:08:20Speaker 02

We're gonna, you got your hiatus, we're Lacuna.

• 1:08:22Speaker 00

So the Verge mobile show will also Lacuna?

• 1:08:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:25Speaker 00

Yeah. I think, I think, look, listen, we, guys, we've been, we've been doing this stuff for a while. We, I think we should, I'm like excited because it'll give us an opportunity to think about, like, what could we do that we haven't done yet? You know?

• 1:08:35David Pierce?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:35Speaker 00

  Besides talk over each other.

• 1:08:36David Pierce?

Which is hard to do when we're, when we're doing this every week.

• 1:08:38Speaker 00

When it's every week, you gotta be like, okay, we gotta get on there.

• 1:08:41Speaker 02

  And talk over each other.

• 1:08:42Speaker 00

  Uh, what?

• 1:08:42Speaker 02

I tried to talk over you there, but you stopped.

• 1:08:44Speaker 00

  I stopped because I knew-

• 1:08:45Speaker 02

  Now you're talking over me.

• 1:08:46David Pierce?

You're being, you're much too polite.

• 1:08:48Speaker 00

  Stop it.

• 1:08:48David Pierce?

This is an actual real problem.

• 1:08:49Speaker 00

Okay. So anyhow, that's it. That's the Vergecast. For now and forever. No, I mean, it's not forever.

• 1:08:57David Pierce?

  No.

• 1:08:57Speaker 00

No, no, we're gonna, it'll be back. Don't get bent out of shape.

• 1:09:01David Pierce?

  You're gonna make me cry.

• 1:09:01Speaker 00

But that's the Vergecast for, yeah, Vergecast 2.0. We're not gonna call it that. Somebody just tweeted about it. It's a good idea.

• 1:09:09David Pierce?

Come up, so, names are a good idea.

• 1:09:10Speaker 00

Yeah, the intro is going to include me driving up in a minivan. Yeah. With a bunch of babies in it.

• 1:09:15David Pierce?

Don't you dare get my hopes up.

• 1:09:16Speaker 00

Bunch of babies, a handful of babies. So that's the Vergecast for this week. If you want to get in touch with us, you can email us at [email protected]. And I highly recommend you do, especially if you have thoughts or ideas about how we can make a more awesome Vergecast, or things you might like to see on something that is like a Vergecast.

• 1:09:34Speaker 02

There's a forum thread already for it.

• 1:09:35Speaker 00

What? There already is a forum thread?

• 1:09:37David Pierce?

Yeah, Ross Miller made a forum thread for us. So if you have ideas, drop them there.

• 1:09:40Speaker 00

Oh, my God, crazy. You can, yeah, you can write something in the forums. You can leave a comment on this post when it goes up. You can find us on Twitter. The Verge is at Verge. I'm Joshua Topolsky. Dieter is Backlon. David is-

• 1:09:52David Pierce?

  I'm so sorry.

• 1:09:53Speaker 00

David is Pierce David. You know, whatever.

• 1:09:56David Pierce?

I discovered recently that at Pierce is being unused on Twitter, and so I'm currently on a crusade. No, at just Pierce.

• 1:10:03Speaker 00

At Pierce. You should totally get it.

• 1:10:05David Pierce?

Somebody had it but has never tweeted, so I'm like, I'm starting a covert campaign.

• 1:10:08Speaker 00

You should get at A T Pierce, at at Pierce.

• 1:10:11David Pierce?

  That's the worst idea.

• 1:10:12Speaker 00

Great stuff, good stuff. Great way to end, great way to end this, this final iteration of the Vergecast. Anyhow, so we'll be back, who knows when? But when we do come back, it's going to be really awesome, or terrible. It could be also horrible. But you know what? You don't know yet, and I don't know yet. And that's what's so exciting. The idea of the unknown creeping up on you silently with a knife or just for a hug. Anyhow, I think that is a great way to end this Vergecast. We will be back. And until then, I mean, honestly, because of the length of time, I highly suggest you buy a firearm to protect your family from what is coming for you, because it's not good and it's coming soon.
