What up everybody, welcome to the Smoking Tire Podcast. Today's episode is brought to you by Proper Cloth. Proper Cloth is the best way to get custom-fit shirts, right? That fit you exactly right this fall. They sent me these unbelievable shirts. I'm talking about flannels, plaids, twills, stuff to wear under coats, under blazers, key winter staples, and it was so easy. All I had to do was go to their website and click a few things about my size, my build, a few very basic measurements, not full tailor stuff, but just the basics, and then choose from there.

• 0:42Matt Farah?

They send me the stuff, I gotta wash it first, you gotta wash your Proper Cloth first, and then the fit was perfect. No tailoring necessary. The Teton Sage Flannel, oh man, wear it as an overshirt, pairs great with jeans, you could rock a sweater if you were under it, although I haven't done the sweater thing, I just keep it over a tee-shirt with the jeans, you guys have seen me wear this on the show. And then they sent me the Jackson Rust Plaid Shirt, it's a work shirt, it's so nice, also wearing it with jeans, because that's literally how I dress every single day, also looks great with some chinos. And then I got the Non-Iron Stretch Supima Light Brew Blue Twill Shirt, and this thing

• 1:27Matt Farah?

is great with a blazer, it's great under a cool coat, great for interviews, on-camera stuff, or weddings, pair it with a navy suit, gray dress pants, or a cool coat. I love Proper Cloth, it's perfect for people who are frustrated with off-the-rack sizing, maybe you're not a standard size, and so everything that Proper Cloth sells is made exactly in your size, so it fits perfectly, and you can customize shirts to your liking, including collar style, buttons, sleeve style, you can add monograms, and no measuring required, gets to you in under two weeks, and if you're not satisfied with the fit, Proper Cloth' experts will provide a free alteration or a return, so it's a risk-free

• 2:11Matt Farah?

order, they've got thousands of 5-star reviews. I now have seven or eight different items from Proper Cloth, and the fit is excellent with all of them, just remember to wash them first. Proper Cloth is based in New York City. And was featured as GQ's favorite online shirt maker. All right, folks, on this episode of the show, Scotto is back and we've got 2.5 hours of fucking meandering nonsense. We talk about old Volkswagen's, we talk about the jobs he used to have and the ones he wants to have in the future. The junk laying around his house and the junk laying around my shop and a whole lot more. It's the Smoke and Tire Podcast. Let's go.

• 2:55Speaker 01

  I still hold the record?

• 2:56Matt Farah?

Let's just say I don't have any plans.

• 2:59Speaker 01

Do I still hold the record?

• 3:00Matt Farah?

I've not made the mistake of booking my trainer for this afternoon.

• 3:03Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 3:03Matt Farah?

  Um, yeah, you do, but-

• 3:05Speaker 01

Single person. I know you guys did-

• 3:06Matt Farah?

You do, but it's by like minute. I mean, the, the, the thousandth.

• 3:10Speaker 01

  Right.

• 3:10Matt Farah?

  The thousandth.

• 3:11Speaker 01

But thousands is like- But I feel like that's a-

• 3:13Matt Farah?

  No.

• 3:13Speaker 01

  Multiplayer sport, right?

• 3:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's a team effort.

• 3:16Speaker 01

  Right, yeah, yeah.

• 3:17Matt Farah?

But you do, I believe still-

• 3:18Speaker 01

A single guest, hold the record.

• 3:20Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 3:21Speaker 01

Something to, I don't know if that's something to be proud of, but here we are.

• 3:23Matt Farah?

Well, no, it's not something, um, that I want to like chill, like just going, going for longer isn't like a goal. Like if you're, if it's some great conversation-

• 3:34Speaker 01

  Then you go.

• 3:35Matt Farah?

Like, you're, you are so good at longish form that I have, can't, I don't have plans after this. So we go as long as we go and whatever, but like, I don't want fucking others to come in here and be all-

• 3:46Speaker 02

We don't want the Chappelle situation where it was like him and who were the other comics for like a year were trying to do the longest stand-up set? And I think he did seven hours in New York.

• 3:54Matt Farah?

  Oh, it must've been garbage.

• 3:55Speaker 02

And it was just like wandering, yeah, but it's wandering thoughts. It's not, you know, dense content.

• 3:58Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's not that perfect six minutes.

• 4:00Matt Farah?

That's the Guns N' Roses. Have you seen, have you seen Guns N' Roses perform in the last five or six years?

• 4:06Speaker 01

  No.

• 4:06Matt Farah?

  They are-

• 4:09Speaker 01

Are we talking like Axl Rose's Guns N' Roses?

• 4:11Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 4:12Speaker 01

Because what was the other, what was the spin? It was Velvet Underground or what, like?

• 4:15Matt Farah?

Oh, well, there was like, yeah, Velvet Revolver or some members. No, I'm talking about the reunited Axl slash Guns N' Roses.

• 4:22Speaker 01

I didn't even know they reunited. Which like, I have to say, I'm embarrassed. I don't know, because I-

• 4:25Matt Farah?

  I loved-

• 4:27Speaker 01

Guns N' Roses as a kid.

• 4:28Matt Farah?

  Well, so-

• 4:28Speaker 01

  I loved it.

• 4:29Matt Farah?

  I did too.

• 4:30Speaker 01

I was, dude, well, there was- We're about the same age, right?

• 4:32Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 4:33Speaker 01

We're, by the way, we have the same birthday.

• 4:34Matt Farah?

We have the same birthday. Which we bring up all the time.

• 4:36Speaker 01

  I'm forty six.

• 4:37Matt Farah?

  Yeah, I'm forty four.

• 4:38Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 4:38Matt Farah?

So, yeah, it's worth give or take. So Appetite for Destruction, Use Your Illusions, No Notes.

• 4:43Speaker 01

  Yeah, no notes.

• 4:44Matt Farah?

Perfect record. And I saw them back in the day on that famous tour with Metallica. Uh, but if you see them now, it is clear that what they are doing is, uh, making up for lost time. Because they're doing like three hour and forty minute sets that are just. When I saw them last summer and I go, this would have been the tightest fucking ninety of all time. You know, and like, but on the other hand, like if I'm, if Pearl Jam does that because I'm such a big fan, I'm like, yes, deep cuts. All this, but like, I didn't know that people are that into Guns N' Roses like that where they're going like,

• 5:22Matt Farah?

this is the ninth track on the spaghetti incident. And you're like, ah, whatever, man. Let me, let me get a little Paradise City and I'll be on my way, you know? But, uh, yeah, so the deep.

• 5:32Speaker 01

Trust me, I think about that a lot. Like when we've got like this clock in the back of, you know, my podcast studio, which is AKA my garage.

• 5:40Matt Farah?

  Yeah, of course.

• 5:40Speaker 01

And I had never used the clock before and it was like counting completely weird on my first one. And I'm just trying to be like, I think it's been two hours. I don't know. Cause it's like a weird stopwatch. And I do think to myself, does anyone really want to keep listening? Like, or have we reached, have we gone past the Overton window of what is acceptable for banter about automotive cars? But then at the same time, I'm, uh, I'm now on my third podcast and, uh, they're all over two hours. I can't do less than two hours.

• 6:08Matt Farah?

Are there, uh, you're using YouTube, I imagine, right?

• 6:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:11Matt Farah?

So what, how long are people listening? Have you looked yet?

• 6:13Speaker 01

I've only released two in the past week.

• 6:16Matt Farah?

Wait till you get like twenty and then we'll see.

• 6:18Speaker 01

So it's like kinda hard to see the numbers. Cause it's like, you know, there's like thirty to forty minute like listen time, which like, is when I'm coming from the world of making videos, like you want seventy percent.

• 6:29Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 6:29Speaker 01

You know, duration or better of like watch time, but that was out of a ten minute video. So you're like, you're like, okay, people are listening for a long time, but they're not listening for the whole time.

• 6:38Matt Farah?

And it's, you get skewed with the people who listen for a minute and click away.

• 6:41Speaker 01

You have to drop that off. After that, it, it's like a really gradual. Fall off all to the end.

• 6:46Matt Farah?

Um, and it also is like, how long are people's commutes? And just like with the way people listen is like a little different, especially if you're not, if you were doing episodic.

• 6:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:57Matt Farah?

Or each episode, this is a complete story and you're not holding people. But if it's more like morning radio, friends bullshitting like we do here, I can accept the fact that people are not, they don't, they don't need to hear. They're not riveting on to what happens next. And that's okay.

• 7:13Speaker 01

One of the early comments was, holy shit, Scott, I'm like happy to have you back, but two hours? And I just replied, trust me, I understand.

• 7:21Matt Farah?

  No, I'm saying, bro.

• 7:23Speaker 01

Like, it's cool if you don't want to listen. I get it. Like, I get it.

• 7:25Matt Farah?

You can put it out there. I mean, maybe, maybe it means you gotta fucking chop it up. Maybe.

• 7:31Speaker 01

Maybe. Yeah, I don't know. Right now, just, I came on this podcast, I guess like a year ago, being like, I'm gonna launch a podcast. It took me a year to do it, but hey, I did it.

• 7:39Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 7:39Speaker 01

I'm happy. Your, your comment was nice.

• 7:43Speaker 01

He commented on the second one and just said, we're so proud of you that you actually released the second one.

• 7:48Speaker 02

  Second one, yeah.

• 7:49Speaker 01

It's like, you know, I might not be good at finishing my cars, but I made a lot of media in my time.

• 7:53Speaker 02

Well, you said something on the first episode that I really identified with. You were like, I'm great at starting things, but not finishing. Or maybe Ron or Vin, they're throwing shit at you.

• 8:00Speaker 01

I will start. I can start everything.

• 8:02Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 8:03Speaker 01

So I am, I am an amazing starter.

• 8:06Matt Farah?

Yeah, how many unfinished project cars do you have right now?

• 8:08Speaker 01

You want me at the first part of the relay race. Right. If I was the last, if I was getting the baton at the end, I'd be like in the stands eating hot dogs.

• 8:14Matt Farah?

Sure. Yeah, you couldn't sit there through the race just waiting for the baton to get to you.

• 8:18Speaker 01

I would be on my phone. I'd be like doing something else, talking to the javelin guy.

• 8:22Matt Farah?

  I can find you.

• 8:24Speaker 02

I'll try this more now. Like, don't you have something to finish over there? Like, I'll throw stuff.

• 8:28Speaker 01

Yeah, new is really exciting. It's really exciting.

• 8:31Matt Farah?

  Short-term projects.

• 8:32Speaker 01

Which is why I have 26 cars, because you just like rotate through them. Like, oh, this is new again. I haven't seen this car in two years. I forgot I have this.

• 8:39Matt Farah?

  So funny.

• 8:39Speaker 02

That is a funny idea. But it was cool. You did, the first show was like chopped up into three kind of little shows within.

• 8:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 8:45Speaker 02

  That's a, that's a cool experiment thing.

• 8:46Speaker 01

Which is something that stems from my, also my ADHD, which is like, I can never just settle on one idea. It's like, I want to do a bunch of different things. And that was very much the story of. Hoonigan was like, we have a new show. Hey, guess what? New show.

• 8:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 8:58Speaker 01

Did you like this show? It's no more because there's a new show. So I think with the very vehemence of the whole idea was like, it's going to be a testing ground for other shows. Because I actually, as much as I enjoy.

• 9:10Matt Farah?

Do you want to do the Brian Scotto Podcast Network?

• 9:12Speaker 01

Yeah, just the whole network is just me.

• 9:16Speaker 01

No, I think it's that while I really enjoy this formula, like the banter formula, and I know you know this, it really works when you have the right guests.

• 9:25Matt Farah?

  Sometimes.

• 9:26Speaker 01

Sometimes I think with the wrong guest, it's just not the right formula for a show. And we used to do this all the time, and it was actually a conversation that came up on that pod was when Hoonigan did,

• 9:40Speaker 01

Build Bio, right? Donut did another version after we did it called Bumper to Bumper, right? And we argued that, man, I think that may actually be a better show than our show. And the reason was, was it was very consistent because James Pumprey was very good at delivering the show. With the problem with Build Bio was sometimes you get people on who had never been in front of the camera before.

• 10:00Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 10:01Speaker 01

And just the whole time they're like staring at the camera, they're nervous, like they're not good at telling a story. They have built an amazing car.

• 10:08Matt Farah?

Relying on those people to be.

• 10:11Speaker 01

  So you never know.

• 10:12Matt Farah?

So we did, we learned this driving fucking people's cars for however many goddamn years. But also for many years podcasting, I was fully convinced that every episode was a guest-driven episode.

• 10:24Speaker 01

  Right.

• 10:25Matt Farah?

And it, and then Spike, of course, once was like, hey, man, you know, like, they're, they're, they're here for you, right? And so we started doing more episodes with no guests and realized they were outperforming all but our like best guests.

• 10:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 10:39Matt Farah?

And so now we instituted what I call the famous or familiar rule. That people don't like meeting new, the audience doesn't like meeting new people.

• 10:46Speaker 01

  Right.

• 10:46Matt Farah?

So I want someone I already know and know what the vibe is going to be, or someone where they're famous, and, and I want to see what they have to say.

• 10:54Speaker 01

  Right.

• 10:55Matt Farah?

  But like nothing in between.

• 10:56Speaker 01

Like Gordon Murray's in town, he gets on the show.

• 10:58Matt Farah?

  Actually, we're getting Gordon virtually.

• 10:59Speaker 01

So I get to come again.

• 11:00Matt Farah?

We are getting, we're getting Gordon virtually. You're actually, you cross over both a bit because you were YouTube famous, and YouTube famous does very well for us. Like when we have YouTube famous people, it actually does better than like.

• 11:16Speaker 01

  It's true.

• 11:16Matt Farah?

I get intrigued as a YouTuber all the time and I die inside, but like.

• 11:21Speaker 01

  What are you?

• 11:22Matt Farah?

I like to say automotive journalist, that's what I like to say, but, but whatever. I die, I can die inside, I can afford it.

• 11:29Speaker 01

I think it was really hard for me to remove that badge when I started.

• 11:33Matt Farah?

  Journalist?

• 11:34Speaker 01

Yeah, cuz I very quickly wasn't a journalist anymore, and I was, and I was such a serious journalist, like, I really cared about journalism.

• 11:42Matt Farah?

  Magazine guy, proper magazine guy.

• 11:43Speaker 01

And was very, like, I was taking my inspiration from Vanity Fair and Wired, and you know, I was really into journalism, read the New York Times every day, and was like into the art of journalism in automotive. And then all of a sudden, like, I'm gonna make videos about burnouts.

• 11:56Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 11:57Speaker 01

  It changed a little bit.

• 11:58Matt Farah?

Dude, I'm now write for the magazine I grew up reading, so that's a weird one, you know?

• 12:04Speaker 01

  As do I occasionally.

• 12:05Matt Farah?

You know, one of the reasons, yeah, right, and well, but one of the reasons I actually really like it is cuz the fact checking. I like getting fact checked, actually, and I like knowing the finished product is like as, as factually correct as it possibly can be. I actually really enjoy that.

• 12:21Speaker 01

Here's a random question, and something I think about a lot, if you could pause a moment of your career and just live in it, what moment would that be?

• 12:28Matt Farah?

Oh, boy. Like freeze, freeze frame and just have that role forever, or just like literally like a moment?

• 12:36Speaker 01

No, no, like freeze frame that era, right? In a way that like technology doesn't shift, the trend doesn't shift, so you could still go stay and be successful at it, right? Like, what is that peak moment?

• 12:47Matt Farah?

I mean, I would have loved to, to be able to continue to do the show with Spinelli and Harris and like to be able to continue to work in a group with my friends, Zach and Thad and Morningstar behind the scenes and JF and, and Chris and me.

• 13:04Speaker 01

  Fantastic team.

• 13:05Matt Farah?

  Like.

• 13:05Speaker 01

  It was fun.

• 13:06Matt Farah?

Like, and I think if that, if that had been allowed to evolve for even half as long as like a Top Gear, like, I'm not saying we wanted to be Top Gear, but like, and Chris got to be Top Gear, but like. Our own thing, but if we had been given the five years, it could have been like really amazing. So I would have loved to be doing that. That was like the most fun it ever got.

• 13:26Speaker 01

  You guys were too early.

• 13:28Matt Farah?

  On everything.

• 13:28Speaker 02

  On everything.

• 13:30Matt Farah?

  On everything.

• 13:30Speaker 01

  You were too early.

• 13:31Speaker 02

Drive Network was too early. Paywall was too early.

• 13:33Matt Farah?

That's why I've stopped doing it.

• 13:34Speaker 01

Drive Network was, yeah, Drive Network was the cautionary tale of what not to do on YouTube.

• 13:40Matt Farah?

I've been so many cautionary tales. Yeah, yeah.

• 13:43Speaker 01

Although I'm pro Paywall, but um.

• 13:45Matt Farah?

  I'm pro Patreon.

• 13:46Speaker 02

We were like eight years early. Or 10 years maybe. If we did, if we had, you know, because now everyone has a Paywall, everyone has a Patreon, and fans are totally fine with it. But back then, everything was free and that was the advantage of YouTube is that you could get this content for free. You don't need to have a cable subscription or whatever. So the idea of putting it behind, you know, dollars was like offensive to everybody. I kind of get it.

• 14:06Speaker 01

No, for me though, I think that era was the 060 era. I didn't realize how much fun I was having until it was over. First of all, I drove cars all the time. I mean, I barely get to like go rip on the track anymore. Back then it was like once a week. It's like, I remember at one point, I had 150 laps at Laguna Seca in like a year. Because they love, you know, at that moment, like they, every press junket was like, we can put you up in Monterey and you can go to Laguna.

• 14:33Matt Farah?

Was that when Mazda took it over and it was like?

• 14:35Speaker 01

It was like, it was just, everybody was there. It felt like, I felt like I would be leaving one trip, come to LA for like two days and then go back to another trip in Laguna and stuff like that.

• 14:43Matt Farah?

That's funny. Now that's like Spain.

• 14:45Speaker 02

  I was gonna say, yeah.

• 14:46Matt Farah?

That's literally, no, it's literally, everyone goes to Spain now. I think, I think because from the European side, it's cheaper to get all the shit down there. And like the weather's predictable and I think the tracks are really cheap.

• 14:58Speaker 01

  Oh, interesting.

• 14:58Matt Farah?

  I think they're really cheap.

• 14:59Speaker 02

There's no way it's as expensive as Laguna.

• 15:01Matt Farah?

Well, no, Laguna is probably one of the most expensive tracks in the world, but.

• 15:05Speaker 01

But yeah, I love that era. And I love, I realize as all of this has gone on, I just like tangible media. Something I really enjoy and I like long form.

• 15:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 15:14Speaker 01

I really struggle to like want to make stuff for Instagram because I know it's important to be visible.

• 15:21Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 15:21Speaker 01

And I told myself in beginning of November, I'm like, all right, the new Jim Kana is coming out. Um, I've got this, you know, I'm trying to launch my podcast and I'm trying to do all this other stuff like I have to start posting again. Cause I had, I posted like six times in the entire year. I'm unfortunately like chronically online, so it's not like I'm not on Instagram. I just don't enjoy like the short format as much.

• 15:45Matt Farah?

Me either at all dude. And unfortunately, I, maybe you have a new strategy. You've always been better at internet than, than me and pretty much everybody. But like, I've found that almost all posts that indicate some other type of media is somewhere else. A podcast are, get fully fucking throttled, whereas like my cat, you know, or just some random bullshit is like normal. You know, they, each platform wants you to create shit just for that platform. And also like the clip software, which it kills me to use AI. We've been using that Opus clip software.

• 16:25Matt Farah?

I think Instagram is throttling that because they don't want people using fucking AI shit, which I understand because I don't like AI shit. But like, you know, it would be a headache to go start making clips for Instagram by hand.

• 16:38Speaker 01

At the level you need to.

• 16:39Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 16:40Speaker 01

Yeah. The, uh, it's interesting. One of the things I realized recently is that, uh, photos of me do very well. Which is like, you know, this, it's like, I'm aging. This is not my favorite version of myself.

• 16:54Matt Farah?

People follow you on Instagram to see pictures of you.

• 16:58Speaker 01

  You.

• 16:58Matt Farah?

  And I.

• 16:59Speaker 01

Doesn't that suck ass? I don't know if it's like a Gen X thing, but like, I don't want pictures of me. That's not who I am. I don't even have a photo of me as my avatar. I have a drawing of my rabbit. And I'll post a photo of me because someone said, you know, you should post a photo of yourself. Like, and I was like, all right, fine. And it like did really well. And I'm like, ah.

• 17:18Matt Farah?

Bro, didn't you literally co-invent the YouTuber face?

• 17:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:23Matt Farah?

You literally co-invented the YouTuber face? Yeah, this shouldn't surprise you.

• 17:27Speaker 01

And it just, it just, yeah, it's just one of those things that, um...

• 17:32Matt Farah?

Oh, it sucks that you have to do this now, but it's such fucking poetic justice. For years, you've been telling other people that they have to do this to be successful.

• 17:41Speaker 01

Like, that does well for me, you know? It's like...

• 17:44Matt Farah?

You look like Jason Camisa in that picture, by the way.

• 17:46Speaker 01

  You know, I'll take that as a compliment. Jason's a good-looking man.

• 17:49Matt Farah?

  He is.

• 17:49Speaker 01

So, it's better than, you know, what other people have said. Everyone's telling me I look like Burt, uh, Kreischer.

• 17:54Matt Farah?

  Burt Kreischer?

• 17:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:55Matt Farah?

I think you look more like Jason Camisa than Burt Kreischer.

• 17:58Speaker 01

  I'll take that.

• 17:59Matt Farah?

No, you don't. I love Burt, but you do not look like Burt. Folks, gotta take a quick break because HelloFresh is here. You may have heard of HelloFresh from people like me. • 24:08Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't know. It's like doing the thing, but for me, Instagram is a necessary evil to promote the other stuff.

• 24:15Matt Farah?

Were you, did you put on a kangaroo suit to ride a Segway in the video to specifically as a counterpoint?

• 24:21Speaker 01

No, I, I actually didn't ride the Segway this time. So, no. So Jim York, who also played the crocodile Dundee character in the one shot and also is the guy that drove the outback into the water to prove that it wasn't just a puddle. Uh, he did all the stunts. Like we just had him kind of jump in for all of that.

• 24:38Matt Farah?

We're talking about, of course, the new Jim Kana, which is fun. There was, there were, as I was watching it, there were multiple places where I experienced some real surprise and delight. When Travis, uh, spoilers for Jim Kana, but when Travis first drives.

• 24:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, maybe.

• 24:57Matt Farah?

Yeah, but when he first drives into the Bathurst race, I went, that, that is, that's fucking choice. That's extremely choice. And the scene at the end with him fucking ripping with people in the backseat of it is a fucking closer of closers. That's a, that's awesome.

• 25:15Speaker 01

So the Bathurst one is, I think, the only thing in the past couple of years that feels new to me.

• 25:22Matt Farah?

  It totally new.

• 25:23Speaker 01

Then everything else is like, we've turned the dial to 11.

• 25:26Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 25:26Speaker 01

Does it go to 11 and a half? Does it go to 12? Right? Um, it was always about one upping the bar on something we've already done, right? Like, oh, he's jumped something. Can he jump something bigger? We jumped a boat. We jumped a helicopter. Can we jump a road train? Can it be higher? Can it be further?

• 25:41Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 25:41Speaker 01

Right? It's just expanding it. You know, he drove over a small body of water. Now let's make it a bigger body of water. And so you eventually you just start getting to the limit of like, one, the danger gets higher and higher. The Bathurst scene, when it was happening, I was giddy laughing.

• 25:55Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 25:55Speaker 01

Right, like, I broke from being a director and just being like, "Oh!" Like, I was yelling. You literally yelled when he slid out. And, you know, and Nick in the Bendix car popped through the smoke. Because that happened on the second take. Oh, sick. Like, it was right there. We did one warm-up run, and then we did a take, and my timing was a little off. And they were, they had a break. Like, they were up too close, and you could see them slowing down. And I famously told them, somewhere, you know, I call out my, my actions. I count them down. And that's where the 3-2-1, action, action, came from, was because we added all these extra, like, we added an extra action and all these things so that we could do timing off of it. But also so that I knew the driver would hear me, because the comms are usually pretty bad.

• 26:39Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 26:40Speaker 01

And then it became this, this thing, especially because of the Amazon show. But we did a 10 count, so we counted down from 10. And I realized I had to call them, the car is somewhere between 3 and 2. And just after Derek Doncic, I don't know if you know Derek, but he was the team, like, principal for, for Ken's team for years. He has a, like, a FIA homologation mustache. You know, he's British.

• 27:01Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 27:03Speaker 01

He's very motorsport. And even though he's a really funny guy, he's always seriously deadpan. So, but I brought him in.

• 27:10Matt Farah?

He looked like a Nigel Mansell.

• 27:12Speaker 01

  100%, 100%.

• 27:14Matt Farah?

I know exactly who you're talking about now, yes.

• 27:16Speaker 01

  And he, by the way.

• 27:19Matt Farah?

  Mustache is a perfect description.

• 27:21Speaker 01

He is fantastic. He's a fantastic and delightful person. We used to refer to him as dear old dad, which is funny, because he was only a year or two older than Ken. And someone once went up to him and said, "Oh, you must be so proud of your son."

• 27:38Speaker 01

He's like, "My son?" So we always called him dear dad. But anyway, he was, he's always like my liaison to motorsports. Like, we go to, like, deal with real motorsports people, Supercar. I'm like, "I need him to translate to them," because otherwise they look at me and they're like, "What is this crazy person asking?" So he's like telling them, "Oh, we've got this."

• 27:53Matt Farah?

Did you have the actual drivers of those race cars?

• 27:55Speaker 01

Yes, and they were all racing the next day. Like, I'm still...

• 27:58Matt Farah?

Completely surprised they allowed this to happen. This was shot on like the practice or quali day on Wednesday.

• 28:04Speaker 02

There's like fans there and stuff.

• 28:05Matt Farah?

Yeah, I know there is, but like I figured some people would just show up if they said fucking Travis Pastrana's shooting some crazy shit here.

• 28:11Speaker 01

So the races, right, the race is on Saturday. They've got, um, practice is on Thursday. This was the track walk on Wednesday. So we were actually having to stop to let drivers walk through set as we were filming because they're like walking the corners. But I thought they'd give us the back of the pack. They gave us the front of the pack. They gave us the, I mean, the guy who won Bathers was there with us for the scenes.

• 28:34Speaker 02

What was your shoot? Did they say, hey, you have an hour or you have six hours?

• 28:38Speaker 01

Yes, we started at six in the morning, but the sun didn't come up till like almost 7:30 and then we were wrapped by I think like one in the afternoon. And we shot four or five different setups and one of the setups actually didn't get used. And Travis talks about it, uh, in a, in a piece we did with Henry Gabe, but basically Travis was hesitating. And like was not committing and I could tell that he like couldn't get his head around it. And I, usually when I see that with the driver, it's best to just walk away.

• 29:05Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 29:05Matt Farah?

• 33:14Speaker 01

  Cause like Travis doesn't hesitate.

• 33:16Matt Farah?

Yeah, I've never heard that sentence before.

• 33:18Speaker 01

And he was actually trying to reenact a crash that had happened there and then crashed.

• 33:24Matt Farah?

  Seriously?

• 33:25Speaker 01

Yeah, but it was a light crash, but it was one of those like, if this goes bad another time, like it may screw up the rest of the day. So I had to like, do the, we're moving on Travis, you know, kind of thing. So I ended up getting cut from the film. But, um, but no, the rest of it was amazing. And all, like, just in general, like Australians, it's interesting because if you ask them, they'll tell you that they live in a nanny state. Cause there's a lot of rules and everything, but like, they all have just like chaos in their hearts. Like these people, like, just anyone, it doesn't matter who it is, like the lady making you coffee, like, they just want to see rad stuff. Like, that's where they're at in life. And everybody at Supercar.

• 34:01Matt Farah?

Because of, of, it's a nanny state, but like, is it that, it's not that much of a, it's like, just car-wise.

• 34:08Speaker 01

Car-wise, they've got a lot of controls. I mean, we tried to go film there nine years ago, they shut us down, they shut Fast and Furious down, they didn't want like practical stunts on the street. They definitely seemed to have a lot of rules. And they also, but at the same time, they all want to see chaos. Like, at the end of the day, there's a little bit of Mad Max living in everyone. There's still prisoners at heart. Yeah, like, and it's great. But I was, you know, we reached out to Supercar with an idea. Actually, the original idea was to film in Gold Coast. They said, why don't you come to Bathurst? We didn't even think that was a possibility because of the schedule. We're like, well, you guys are racing the week we need to film. They're like, yeah, we'll make it work. Nathan over there who runs broadcast was like, let us do whatever we wanted. Gave us all the great drivers. And then I also thought that the drivers were going to be timid. I don't want to crash.

• 34:53Speaker 01

Nope, they were all just full send.

• 34:56Speaker 02

It was one of the greatest moments I've seen in all the GymCon. It's like I watched the whole thing twice.

• 35:00Speaker 01

  Unexpected. Yeah, yeah.

• 35:02Speaker 02

I watched it and after the second time I paused it, that's when I texted you because I was watching it again. And I just saw it come onto the track or saw Travis come on the track. And I was like, holy shit. This is amazing.

• 35:12Speaker 01

It's also one of those things where the cameras, you know, the cameras do it justice, but it also was so good on its own. Like sometimes there's scenes that the cameras help the scene and make it look better. But if you look at the leaks that have come out from just regular, you know, spectators there, it's just as amazing to watch. Because you're like, that car just drove through smoke as if it was no thing. It looked completely choreographed. If it was one of those things like we tried to do this for a movie, it would have taken five days of prep work to get everyone on their timing. Travis just looked at everybody and said, you guys, we're all race car drivers. We all know how to do this. Let's just not hit each other and keep it as close as possible. And they all were like, okay, let's go.

• 35:52Speaker 01

Like that was it. That was the pep talk. I wish I could say, you know, we had this whole thing plotted and GPS and all. Nope, just, just send it.

• 36:00Matt Farah?

Can we just let's play this or we can't stream it. Go fucking, is this the first shot? Is this right where he comes on the track?

• 36:07Speaker 01

Yeah, this is pretty much the moment.

• 36:08Matt Farah?

We're at, if you're watching at home, let's just say, let's say if you want to watch this at home, let's spool up Hoonigan Aussie shred GymCon 2025 to, what is that, three minutes, 14 seconds? And in three, two, one, action, action. We'll play from there. And here it just fucking rips into what looks like the parade lap of Bathurst. And full smoke. That's the shot, right?

• 36:35Speaker 01

Yeah, just the pop of the smoke was just like, was. With everything and then.

• 36:40Speaker 02

  The drag race.

• 36:41Speaker 01

  This.

• 36:41Speaker 02

Just felt, it felt so playful.

• 36:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:43Speaker 02

  This was amazing, the 360.

• 36:45Matt Farah?

The 360 through the pit road or the escape road.

• 36:48Speaker 01

It was so steep and you know.

• 36:50Speaker 02

  Damn.

• 36:50Speaker 01

Like you walk things like Laguna and you're like, oh, this is really steep. I can't explain to you how steep the downhill section of the mountain is here. It is, it's kind of terrifying and like it was like hurting my knees to walk it like that. You're like partly my age, but it was one of those things where like this doesn't come across when you watch it on television.

• 37:08Matt Farah?

  And it's long.

• 37:08Speaker 01

  It's long.

• 37:09Matt Farah?

It's, it's much longer than the downhill at Laguna too, right?

• 37:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 37:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 37:13Speaker 01

Oh, I mean, it's not even comparable. I mean downhill is one turn and this goes on forever. Like you're just downhill, downhill, downhill.

• 37:20Matt Farah?

It's like a kilometer downhill, right?

• 37:22Speaker 01

Yeah, it's, I, I don't know the exact specs on it, but it is longer than it should be. I, I, there's tracks that I'm, that make me afraid to drive fast on, like Nurburgring is one of them. This is definitely one of them. I do not like driving fast downhill.

• 37:36Matt Farah?

This is one of my favorite sim tracks.

• 37:38Speaker 01

Hold time, you're not, you like, like hill climb is great because you throttle the whole way. Like this is, you're any second from losing it. Yeah. You played on the sim.

• 37:45Matt Farah?

  On the sim it's fun.

• 37:46Speaker 01

  It does not translate.

• 37:47Speaker 02

But even on sim, this has always been my least favorite section of any track on any video game. Cause it's downhill and it's tight and the radius has changed a lot and you, you can just fuck it up.

• 37:56Speaker 01

It's steeper than you think. The walls are way closer than you think. It's way narrower than you think. There is no runoff whatsoever. There's about two feet of grass that basically gets you just a little bit faster before you hit the wall.

• 38:06Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 38:06Speaker 01

Right? It's a little extra, it's a little extra kick. Um, it's blind in so many places. Uh, and for, you know, you talk to the drivers and because there's such like kind of crazy crest, like you don't see. And then all of a sudden like you drop in. So like a lot of their points of reference are like way off track, just like the tree is at Laguna, right? You know, it's like you're finding reference points that aren't even on track to kind of figure out where you are. And it's amazing. And Travis was actually scared to throw this 360. He's like, I don't think it's going to work. Like it's just too steep. Because when I say scared, like, I don't know if there's like real fear in that man's like vocabulary, but he was afraid, is this actually going to work because of just, you know, the steepness of it.

• 38:47Matt Farah?

Can you not, yeah, can you not make a 360 work on a downhill? His math I've never considered before, to be honest with you.

• 38:54Speaker 01

So typically, like with an all-wheel-drive car, you need throttle to keep it sliding, right? Because the minute you come off throttle, you're now in a situation where now the tires are doing their job and they're trying to slow you down and you're usually sideways. So throttle is what does everything, but how much throttle can you be on going downhill that fast? So getting it to rotate, all your control is under throttle. So it's a mixture now of like throttle and sliding and brakes to get it to rotate. It's not the same as just kicking it into basically a moving, it's more than a moving donut because a donut, you stop in place, but it's, you know, a 360, you're throttled the whole time and you're driving yourself out in an all-wheel-drive car. You can't really do that when you're going downhill and/or you're approaching at high speed.

• 39:35Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 39:36Speaker 01

If you watch it in slow-mo, you can see like brakes starting, stopping, wheels moving, like all that kind of stuff. He figured it out, so.

• 39:43Matt Farah?

How many, yeah, the first try?

• 39:45Speaker 01

And like this right here, that, this I think was, we did, we did one take without the cars and then we moved them in. This is either first take or second take. And for me, the timing, like the goal was to get most of the cars past him by the end of 360 and it worked out perfectly. And then he like not only connected with them again at the end, but he immediately throws it back into drift. So it's like, obviously this is the main quote-unquote moment. It shows how steep the hill is, but my favorite part is this, right here.

• 40:16Matt Farah?

  The downhill drift entry.

• 40:17Speaker 01

Yeah, and he's like, I'm gonna keep sliding and chasing you guys. Yeah, like he's immediately back in the race, which is kind of cool. And it's just one of those things, when this leaked. All the comments in Australia were like, that's AI. That's AI. One, no one could do that. Two, you have an entire, you know, no way a sanctioning body would allow you to do it. And it's like, man, I guess it's like, is that a high watermark where you make something so unbelievable that people are like, that's AI? I'm like, no, that shit actually happened.

• 40:43Matt Farah?

Yeah, I think it is a pretty good high watermark.

• 40:46Speaker 02

Delivery looked amazing. I mean, the colors in this, the landscape were just so awesome compared, like, the cityscape ones you've done are also amazing. But there's, it's a lot of grayscale, right? And this with just grass and, and

• 40:57Matt Farah?

  Lot of red.

• 40:58Speaker 02

  Yellow leaves.

• 40:59Matt Farah?

Lot of red, lot of green.

• 41:00Speaker 02

Delivery just popped because it was white, but with the red across it. It's so good.

• 41:04Matt Farah?

And like stage rat, like the intro, like actually making a good bit, a bit about the stage rally sort of aspect was cool.

• 41:11Speaker 01

We never really did much off-road, right? Like Jim Connor was the on-road version of what we did. And although the whole thing was inspired from rally, and when we went to go do this one, the brat sort of inspired it. I'll, I didn't really love the concept of the brat at first. I'm not a big

• 41:29Matt Farah?

I'm not a big brat guy.

• 41:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:30Matt Farah?

I don't really give a shit. Bucky loves his brat. I get it. It's cool.

• 41:34Speaker 01

People love El Camino's, all that.

• 41:36Matt Farah?

  Yeah, I don't really give a shit.

• 41:37Speaker 01

And, um, fine, it's fine. But, uh, but Travis is a big brat guy. And then he made his own brat, which is like an LS powered brat that he did in a film with Black Rifle. And that thing was cool and it was like his thing. And then I'm like, we're gonna do another brat? Like, we should, I had all these other ideas of things I wanted to do. But, you know, at the end of the day, it's what Travis wants to drive. So it's like, okay, that's what you guys want to make. When I first saw it, I was like, nah, it's interesting, right?

• 42:05Matt Farah?

But then the Is the Subaru powertrain in there?

• 42:08Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Revs to like 9,500.

• 42:10Matt Farah?

  That's crazy.

• 42:11Speaker 01

  Pretty wild.

• 42:11Matt Farah?

So they can actually make Subaru engines that like do things like that now?

• 42:14Speaker 01

Well, Vermont Sports Car. Yeah, yeah. So, no, the engine was actually, it didn't pop the whole time. It was pretty good.

• 42:19Speaker 02

  Right, for a week.

• 42:20Speaker 01

Yeah. But I think that Once we saw the vehicle, it sort of inspired like what we should go do with it. And all of a sudden, like, seeing this like, kind of, partial car truck out in the outback made a lot of sense. Like, it all started to kind of connect, and it was like, okay, this feels like the right location for it. And when we, we were originally gonna go shoot in San Diego, they told us no. So, actually, originally Puerto Rico hurricanes, then San Diego, no, and then we went back to, to Australia.

• 42:49Matt Farah?

When you try for Puerto Rico, and then, do you have to come up with a new concept and then present it to?

• 42:56Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, it's a, it's a big process.

• 42:57Matt Farah?

So what was your failed Puerto Rico concept?

• 43:00Speaker 01

Uh, the only problem with Puerto Rico was that, when the timing for the car to be finished was gonna put us dead smack in hurricane season. And the contingency is just scary. I mean, it's, you know, it's actually pretty scary what happens in Puerto Rico during the hurricanes, because they get completely cut off from everything.

• 43:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 43:15Speaker 01

You just take on way too much risk that it could even not be a full hurricane, but you could have rained for an entire week. And there just wasn't enough budget contingency to say, yeah, let's, let's go roll that dice.

• 43:26Matt Farah?

No, like, what was, what was the shot, where you were like, I wanna see this car do fucking this in Puerto Rico that made you wanna go there?

• 43:34Speaker 01

Um, there was a building to building jump.

• 43:37Matt Farah?

  Uh huh.

• 43:37Speaker 01

That, that like, only would be allowed in Puerto Rico or places like Puerto Rico. Like, there's a certain element of Travis's, Travis pushes the, um, like, the level so far with what he wants to do and what he's willing to do, and where the ideas go, that we just really can't operate inside of like, the, the US liability, right? Puerto Rico's a territory.

• 44:00Matt Farah?

But you should, I mean, you, you could put that on this, you could, listen, we really, we, we wouldn't be allowed to do this in America. Travis is too brave for the United States.

• 44:08Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, it just became one of those, it was really difficult to do stuff, and...

• 44:14Matt Farah?

Like, Elon says it, but he's lying. Like, you could actually be, you could be right.

• 44:18Speaker 01

Well, we learned this on the, on the BJ Baldwin videos. And it's not just what they're allowed to do, it's the type of stuff, like, if we had a supermarket that had, you know, the parking lot fall 15 feet, there would be a...

• 44:33Matt Farah?

  Really? Not so in Mexico.

• 44:37Speaker 01

Which means if you need a big drop off jump, it's just there. So a lot of this stuff is a little bit more natural.

• 44:42Matt Farah?

  That's so funny.

• 44:43Speaker 01

Natural terrain. Less like concern about safety in other places than the US. I mean, the US is like one of the worst when it comes to our level of liability because of lawsuits and everything. So even Europe is more open than that. So I think right now, like the last like bastions of being able to do really crazy stuff on films is probably South America and Eastern Europe. But there was a war in Eastern Europe. So I was like, I guess we'll go look somewhere else. And then surprisingly, Australia came.

• 45:09Matt Farah?

Yeah. So wait, San, but in between with San Diego, did you want to do a military base?

• 45:14Speaker 01

No, I wanted to shoot in the streets of San Diego because San Diego is the closest topography to San Francisco. And San Francisco is the best film we ever made, right? With Ken and both Travis and I wanted to play some level of homage to that, right? That like, that was the film.

• 45:29Matt Farah?

Jump drifts. You essentially wanted jump drifts.

• 45:31Speaker 01

You wanted jump drift and that's something that we haven't been able to really recreate. And that I think is the film that Travis, one, it was the first film Travis was in. He was in as a cameo with Ken, but to Travis, that was the film where he was like, holy shit. And I think it was for everybody, but Travis loves the danger and that really had danger. One, two, three, and four didn't have danger. Watching Ken just like throw the, you know, the car absolutely sideways mid air or do that huge jump in Vallejo felt more dangerous. So that was this thing that we wanted to go do. We found, I mean, we found some corners that if you would do a split screen, it would feel like it was the same road. I mean, it was amazing how much the topography there matched sort of San Francisco and had a similar kind of vibe to it. You can see the water from it.

• 46:14Speaker 01

We had a lot of support from the tourism board. They were really excited about it. We really thought we were going there. And unfortunately, as they ruin everything, takeovers ruin that. And they, they were very honest and they said, listen, we totally understand what you guys do is not takeovers. We understand that, you know, that historically, Who Negan and Jim Connors series has been anti anything illegal, right? I mean, we probably, Who Negan probably did less illegal shit than you guys do. Cause we never did anything on the streets that could be considered illegal. Like, we wouldn't drive fast and show it because we knew that we were under scrutiny because of what we were doing everywhere else, right?

• 46:49Matt Farah?

Yeah, you did grimy shit on your own fucking piece of parking lot.

• 46:53Speaker 01

  Parking lots and shit, yeah.

• 46:54Matt Farah?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 46:55Speaker 01

And then everything else was like, roads closed. I was way more illegal at zero to sixty than I was at Hoonigan. Cause at zero to sixty, you're like, oh, I'm test driving this car. I guess I'll hit one sixty on Lincoln.

• 47:04Matt Farah?

The most illegal things are done by magazine people.

• 47:07Speaker 01

  One hundred percent.

• 47:08Matt Farah?

By fucking far. Way worse than anything we do in the Canyons on a regular day.

• 47:13Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 47:13Matt Farah?

On a fucking, how about motorcycle press launch?

• 47:17Speaker 01

  Oh, I can only imagine.

• 47:18Matt Farah?

Have you ever, oh my, I've

• 47:20Speaker 01

I'm not that good of a bike rider anymore.

• 47:22Matt Farah?

Absolutely not. Everyone thinks they're on the Isle of Man fucking TT. It's crazy.

• 47:28Speaker 01

I remember, I was on a press launch with, remember John Guzic?

• 47:32Matt Farah?

  Mm-hmm.

• 47:33Speaker 01

I loved, I don't want to blast John on this, but John didn't really enjoy driving that much.

• 47:37Matt Farah?

I don't think he likes driving at all.

• 47:38Speaker 01

No. So John would always let me, John would always let me get his driving time.

• 47:44Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 47:44Speaker 01

So I would always partner with John because it meant I got like his track time and he would just ride with me.

• 47:48Matt Farah?

Cause it's actually a pretty good strategy for you.

• 47:50Speaker 01

He used to say, he would say, look, I'll do one lap or two, but then I'd rather ride with you and then you can like give me your feedback and that works as well. So I would always drive with him, but I remember when me and him were in Big Sur once and like, I look back at it and it's like, could it like, straight to jail? Like, straight to jail. I think it was the M, was like the BMW one series M, whatever, like when that came out or whatever.

• 48:10Matt Farah?

  The orange one.

• 48:10Speaker 01

I don't even remember, but it was like, just full, just absolute no care. And then I go and start this company that is looked at as like, these guys, and like, and we did nothing but like, follow the law and rules. But anyway, you know, and follow the rules and not break them.

• 48:25Matt Farah?

By the way, if I, thirty-one-year-old me was on the one series M launch in fucking Big Sur.

• 48:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 48:31Matt Farah?

I would, I would be doing absolute criminal things in a car like that.

• 48:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, it was

• 48:36Matt Farah?

  Hundred percent.

• 48:37Speaker 01

  It was fantastic.

• 48:37Matt Farah?

  I'm with you.

• 48:38Speaker 01

It was fantastic, yeah. And one day we should do a pod just on all of, once we've had, once we've had statute of limitation.

• 48:43Matt Farah?

That would actually be funny. Statute of, okay. I, Hannah came up with the name for a podcast that I'm going to say out loud right now on December fifteenth.

• 48:54Speaker 01

Buy the URL right now before someone else.

• 48:56Matt Farah?

  Buy the URL.

• 48:57Speaker 01

And, and also sit on the Instagram.

• 48:58Matt Farah?

It might, it's, all right. It's vehicular man's laughter.

• 49:04Speaker 01

Which is a, which is a pretty fucking awesome name for a pod.

• 49:07Matt Farah?

It's a naked gun joke also.

• 49:09Speaker 01

It's a naked gun joke. Oh, is it? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay, I'm sorry. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Shit, I never, is it from the old Naked Gun? No, it's from the new one. Oh, I didn't see the new one. Like, they got you on Man's, they got you on Man's Laughter? And it's like manslaughter. And Liam Neeson's like.

• 49:23Matt Farah?

He's like, it's like this No Joke Son or something like that. It's a great movie.

• 49:26Speaker 01

That's pretty funny, I could see that. All right, well, maybe she stole it from that, but either way. It's okay. Vehicular Man's Laughter is a good name for a podcast.

• 49:32Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 49:33Speaker 01

I mean, it's okay, I guess I'm, you know, I'm coming after you guys, my pod.

• 49:35Matt Farah?

The statute of limitations is a fucking better name. If you, what if there was a podcast where people, you publish on your website, the statutes of limitations of all these crimes? And you're like, if this expired, recently expired for you, come on podcast.

• 49:53Speaker 01

  And we'll talk about it.

• 49:54Matt Farah?

And we'll talk about your crimes.

• 49:54Speaker 01

There's obviously gotta be things like I don't want on the list.

• 49:57Matt Farah?

  No, but like.

• 49:57Speaker 01

Like, there's certain things like, you're like, whoa, whoa, whoa.

• 50:00Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, but otherwise. Andrew shows up, you're like, eh, back up.

• 50:02Speaker 01

Or, or you could have that, but then you have a crew in the parking lot that takes care of it, right? Like, that's a different show.

• 50:09Matt Farah?

Chris Hansen's in the parking lot, but he's on a second show.

• 50:11Speaker 01

Exactly, yeah. But that's a, that's a fucking, that's a pretty good show. Yeah, it's that, who's gone wild, all together in one. So, who protect the world? Yeah. But yeah, but, yeah, anyway, I don't know where we're at with that, but, uh.

• 50:23Matt Farah?

No, you were, yeah, you couldn't do it in San Diego.

• 50:25Speaker 01

But we could do San Diego, because of, and what they said to us, and I, I totally get it, it's like, like, we know what you make is a film, but it's hard for us, as we're having a really difficult time trying to stop takeovers, it's hard for us to then allow something that someone could misconstrue as connection, even though we know you guys aren't, we know that you're very publicly anti-that, but unfortunately, there's just people who don't wanna sign off on it. And we have, that has become increasingly more of a problem in the US. Not anywhere else, because takeovers seem to be unfortunately, an American problem. It seems way bigger here than it is, than it is everywhere else, so.

• 51:02Matt Farah?

  Wow.

• 51:03Speaker 01

I imagine, do you guys talk about this? Is takeovers a conversation that comes up much? Or do you feel like your audience doesn't pay much attention to it?

• 51:10Matt Farah?

I mean, our audience is, in general, not about it, but they don't bring them up.

• 51:13Speaker 01

  I don't know anyone who's. I don't know anyone.

• 51:15Speaker 02

Basically, like, I think they're just, we skew slightly more responsible because our audience is like average 35 and they're just not going to put themselves at risk for that.

• 51:24Speaker 01

So I don't think I mean that. What I mean more is like the problem of takeovers. Is that a subject you guys talk about? Is that something that's come up?

• 51:31Matt Farah?

  No, not really, no.

• 51:32Speaker 01

Is it something that you guys see in your purview or is it something that seems like outside of this? Like, are you guys more concerned with the fact that every week someone crashes on ACH?

• 51:41Matt Farah?

That's, that hits, that's more like lands in our lap.

• 51:45Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:45Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah. Which is, I mean, also a problem.

• 51:49Speaker 01

100%. I'll be honest, I don't really like, I haven't been up in years, but like, I don't want to go to ACH because I feel like it's become such a risk of someone crossing the line while you're up there, where like a lot of places I go that I won't mention, there's no one there.

• 52:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:06Speaker 01

And it's like, I enjoy driving at the speed I feel comfortable at and not having like some guy in a brand new GT3 come across the line or something like that.

• 52:14Matt Farah?

For sure. I go up there at early, early weekday mornings and I'm like way up there and I, and I'm by myself and that's for a reason. But the other day, two days ago, I was filming the Ferrari 12C, not bad, and I'm going up there and I'm on Angeles Forest Highway, which is the commuter road from Palmdale. Now, I, while I'm 100% with you about the fear of someone driving like an asshole in their supercar and crossing the double yellow, I almost got head on by a fucking, some kind of economy car that was like four different colors, trying to make a fucking double yellow pass, full on. And

• 52:57Matt Farah?

I, I, you know, it was fortunately, it was far enough away that I like, you know, I'm in a Ferrari, I basically almost came to a stop and like put two wheels kind of in the dirt where it was safe. And the guy ducked back in in time because he realized like, I'm about to die. But like that, I've had that happen a lot more often.

• 53:16Speaker 01

I guess, let me clarify my ACH thing. It's more like, especially for, for good vibes, there's just so many people on the road at the same time that one, I think you up your like chances of something bad.

• 53:25Matt Farah?

  On Fridays, sure.

• 53:27Speaker 01

Right? Second, I think that there's also an element, and this is my own, is like, I am, I'm a... Pretty moderate driver in canyons when I'm by myself. When other people are there, I speed up. Sure. Because you're like, oh, there's the excitement, like someone's behind me or something like that. You have a little pressure and like all of a sudden you like start to kind of lose frame of reference of like, I'm here to just go do this.

• 53:51Speaker 02

If I don't know the other person, like I point by people all the time. Like I drove this old nine eleven up there a week ago and I feel the same concern you do. I go to Good Vibes like once every two, three months and I'm nervous on the way up and down because it's, is someone going to cross over, whether they're commuting or it's someone who's just trying to get their Instagram views. And every time I come down, like I text my wife, like, hey, I'm back down. She's like, thank you because she gets nervous every time I go up there. But I think I've seen groups of cars that start just ripping together and you know, two of the cars are very capable of the speeds they're doing and there's always like a third or fourth.

• 54:24Speaker 01

  It's all, yeah.

• 54:25Speaker 02

Not as good, not, doesn't have the tires or whatever, or the, and the driver. And that's the person that, you know, you have to worry about. It's the person who's trying to keep up with their friends and has a problem.

• 54:33Speaker 01

I'm also like old now. I think I've just slowed down. It's like back in the day, man, Malibu, like when I first moved here.

• 54:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:39Speaker 01

I would take the nine eleven up there by myself at night and just run. Yeah. Or like when I was a journalist and living in New York, like we'd come here like, oh my God, we have good roads. I don't have to just drive the one loop at Harriman. Bear Mountain, baby. Yeah. That's Seven Lakes Drive. The same cop who sees me there every week in a different car.

• 54:55Speaker 02

That's the big challenge is like, I think, I talked, I think Jalopnik interviewed me about this, but like, how do we solve this problem? And it's so hard when you cross over into like thirty five, forty. You get more responsible, you're, you worry about risk more, but how do you explain that to kids who are twenty five?

• 55:11Speaker 01

  No, you don't.

• 55:11Speaker 02

Just into cars and they're doing the same mistakes we made, you know?

• 55:14Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, so to go back to the takeover thing is interesting as to like where the Venn diagram is of it. It's something I'm very well aware of because I've watched it sort of shut down a lot of opportunities, a lot of things. It's something that I don't know a single person who participates or has participated in it. Other than like back in the day, guys who did sideshows up in like San Francisco, like Oakland area when it was like early. And that was more because I was interviewing them when I was at Rides Magazine, right? It was like, I don't know anyone who's a part of that. That culture, but the culture has become unfortunately synonymous with other parts of car culture. And there I don't actually like, I'll watch the videos and like, none of those cars are modified. Most of those guys don't seem like they really know what they're doing. It doesn't seem like part of the culture.

• 55:59Speaker 01

A lot of the cars are for according to my friend who works in auto auto crimes is like, most of the cars are stolen.

• 56:06Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 56:06Speaker 01

So it's not what, but it, but to the police and everyone else, it's like, oh, it's all the same. So it's like quota filling is like, oh, we pulled over a modified car and that's us cracking down on takeovers. And it's like two different sides of the culture.

• 56:17Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 56:18Speaker 01

Um, so I don't know. And I was wondering if it's like something that's risen to you guys.

• 56:21Speaker 02

It's like grabbing people at Home Depot and saying you're going after the gang members. Like it's, it's.

• 56:24Speaker 01

  Yeah. You're checking a box.

• 56:26Speaker 02

  You're checking a box.

• 56:27Speaker 01

You're checking a box. And I think that that is a big issue that we're facing right now in Southern California. Because I have a lot of friends who work on the force and they all tell me like, man, like all of these crackdowns coming from that. Because like, it's too dangerous to deal with the takeovers. You have hundreds and hundreds of kids. So unless it's like a task force plan where they've got 30 cars they can bring in. But then it's like, why actually put that much police after it? Because the one thing that's surprising is less people die there than you probably think. So it does. So it's like, it's this weird, like it's a nuisance. And there's a lot of people who get hurt, but it's not actually reported.

• 57:03Matt Farah?

  Right.

• 57:03Speaker 01

So they don't have like the data that connects to it. Um, so you have this situation where it's like, it takes a huge force to stop it. And but without that force, it actually becomes more dangerous. If a cop comes in, you now create like a riot situation.

• 57:16Matt Farah?

One cop is worse than no cops, but if, but there's like a whole gap in between no cops and 40 cops. Where you're just like, uh, and it just becomes a disaster.

• 57:27Speaker 01

When you were younger in New York, did you ever go to the street races? Like Hunts?

• 57:31Matt Farah?

I did. I went to Hunts Point once and I got embarrassed.

• 57:37Matt Farah?

Fucking real bad, real bad. My Mustang, uh, got, got just, just its ass handed to it.

• 57:46Speaker 01

By like a point eight Corolla?

• 57:48Matt Farah?

Dude, a totally stock looking Eclipse, you know, GSX that it turns out ran like nines.

• 57:55Speaker 01

I think I know that kid.

• 57:58Matt Farah?

Yeah, never went back, but like, yeah, it was, it's a shades of gray.

• 58:02Speaker 01

But I bring that up because it's, it was an interesting shift that I experienced when I was younger, which was the street racing was actually very sort of organized at one point. And the cops would come in, they would turn their lights on, no siren. Everybody would casually walk back to their car and drive away.

• 58:19Matt Farah?

  We had things organized.

• 58:21Speaker 01

Yeah, it was organized back then, you know, it was a good time. And we would, we would race in Queens and then we would cross the border to Brooklyn. So now you're in a different jurisdiction. Those cops were happy, they'd go home, you'd race for an hour or two. Shift change would happen, so you'd get a little extra time.

• 58:35Matt Farah?

It sounds like you're gatekeeping street crimes.

• 58:38Speaker 01

  And then they would.

• 58:39Matt Farah?

It sounds like you're, it sounds like you're like, you know, when we were doing street crimes.

• 58:43Speaker 01

  I totally am.

• 58:43Matt Farah?

  It was just better.

• 58:44Speaker 01

  I am 100%.

• 58:45Matt Farah?

These street crimes are worse than our street crimes.

• 58:48Speaker 01

I am 100% an old man going, you know, in my day, it was different. And I, I get that, but there was a moment where it shifted and I don't want to blame the movie Fast and Furious, but Fast and Furious came out and all of a sudden a different audience started coming to the street races. And then the cops would show up and everyone get in their cars and crash into each other, leaving, right? You're like, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

• 59:06Matt Farah?

The scramble, the scramble's no good.

• 59:08Speaker 01

And it made me, and it was like, it all of a sudden it got, and I, I will admit this, like, the mayhem of it was kind of fun. Like, I could see it being 19, 20 years old, like, the attraction to this thing. But all the old heads stopped coming. And that which made it worse, because the people who actually were, as you mentioned, the 35 and older crowd who's more responsible, stopped paying attention to it, they weren't a part of it.

• 59:30Matt Farah?

They rolled their G-bodies back into their trailers and.

• 59:33Speaker 02

I, I remember, because I, I went street racing in Santa Cruz for years. That was like what I did on the weekend. I didn't drink. We had a place we went and when the cops would show up, they would just drive by with the light on. Everyone would leave. But I remember, like, I can still remember the adrenaline I would have when we were just driving back to Santa Cruz and you'd look in the rearview and see like, you know, 30 cars with their lights on and you're like, we're all rolling together. We all have cool muscle cars and it was just so exciting to be like part of that group and part of the scramble. But then, to your point, Fast and Furious came out and all of a sudden the population going to those things like doubled or tripled.

• 1:00:05Matt Farah?

And there were more accidents and then everyone stopped going. I mean, look dudes, for some reason, like Gumball is still societally acceptable. And statistically, like those types of events, not to just purely single out Gumball, but those types of events are like just as dangerous.

• 1:00:23Speaker 01

Some of the worst crimes I've ever committed were on both Gumball and the Bull Run.

• 1:00:29Matt Farah?

Yeah. Are they accepted by society or do they just? I mean, they're not, but they're not like there, there isn't some fucking crackdown against them.

• 1:00:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00:37Matt Farah?

  You know, it's just.

• 1:00:38Speaker 01

I thought Gumball, the original Gumball, I thought was the coolest thing in the world when I was a kid.

• 1:00:41Matt Farah?

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:00:42Speaker 01

There was nothing that seemed cool. I mean, that's how I met Ken Block. Cause I went and I did Gumball in 2005.

• 1:00:46Matt Farah?

Videos and fucking Jack, was it, did they go on Jack, on Gumball and CKY?

• 1:00:52Speaker 01

No, Jackass did it, I think. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Cause Ryan Dunn did it, I think with Bam.

• 1:00:57Matt Farah?

But was CKY 2K, did they go on it maybe? They dropped a clip in. Yeah. I don't think it was part of the whole. But that shit was like, that was, oh, oh, and like when I, that, when I was watching that, me, like, I didn't, Hunts Point was like my high school one time. And then me and Larry Casilla did English Town. We literally went to the drag show. Where the guy had a swastika on his hood. Uh, cool. And then it was Ocean Parkway roll racing to 200 miles an hour in like oh five. When everybody had V10 BMWs.

• 1:01:28Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:01:28Matt Farah?

And it was like 150 to 200 fucking roll racing to, uh, to that Cars and Coffee out at, uh, at the end of the fucking point.

• 1:01:37Speaker 01

I, I remember the, but there was like a exotics run that they used to do in that area.

• 1:01:43Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:44Speaker 01

You probably, I think you went on them. And I used to always, uh, get an Evo from Mitsubishi at the time because Evo's at that time could smoke a lot of, a lot of like brand new exotics. And eventually they banned Evo's from going to that event. I'd always like call Mo at Mitsubishi and be like, hey, can I get an Evo this weekend?

• 1:02:03Matt Farah?

  I wanna go.

• 1:02:03Speaker 01

Be like, yo. Yeah, these Evo's, these damn Evo's. Meanwhile, like I could have got a Lamborghini, but instead I was like, nah, I wanna bring an Evo to this.

• 1:02:10Matt Farah?

If you have 15 minutes to live in a racetrack, you want an Evo 9.

• 1:02:13Speaker 01

  100%.

• 1:02:14Matt Farah?

  It's a fantastic car.

• 1:02:15Speaker 01

At doing that, it's really bad at everything else.

• 1:02:18Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. If you like being able to hear and have a conversation with your people in the car.

• 1:02:24Speaker 01

Yeah, if you want to have a car from the 2000s with a dash from the 1980s, you know, probably a Niva.

• 1:02:32Matt Farah?

But fucking, yeah, Bathurst was the shit, just to finish that off. And that thing is awesome. It's on Hoonigan's YouTube channel, right?

• 1:02:40Speaker 01

I think it's on Hoonigan Subaru and Channel 199, because you can like collab YouTube videos now. Fun.

• 1:02:48Matt Farah?

  Interesting.

• 1:02:49Speaker 01

It's a little across all three.

• 1:02:50Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's fu- it's sick. I when that that shot of of him pulling into the race and that's just fucking amazing.

• 1:02:58Speaker 01

It's one of those things like you draw it out in your head and you're like, that should be cool.

• 1:03:01Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:02Speaker 01

And usually it's like not as cool as you thought. And that was like three times cooler than I thought it was gonna be. Like it was just so perfect. The timing was so perfect. All of it was great. And I think for me, it's probably a top moment in the film just because it feels different.

• 1:03:16Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:17Speaker 01

  You know, so.

• 1:03:18Matt Farah?

  It does.

• 1:03:18Speaker 01

Yeah, it gets definitely like a milestone. It's like that, the canyon jump, just because it's so kind of crazy and dangerous feeling. The driving over water.

• 1:03:27Matt Farah?

Although the canyon is so deep that jumping the road train doesn't really matter. The road train is fucking way down here and the canyon's like three times the height of the train.

• 1:03:36Speaker 01

I have a fascination with road trains.

• 1:03:38Matt Farah?

Of course you do, because they're fucking sick.

• 1:03:40Speaker 01

So I just wanted to include a road train. So it was like, just wanted to be there. But it helped understand the height. It gives you like, the road train looked small.

• 1:03:47Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:48Speaker 01

Which I think helps you sort of understand how big it is. Otherwise, you have like a lack of scale, right, for for how big the the jump was and how big the consequences are for it. So. And then.

• 1:03:57Matt Farah?

If you could jump a road train the long way.

• 1:04:00Speaker 01

Of course. I mean, you could jump anything. It's just physics. You know, called Tanner Faust.

• 1:04:06Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, I'm, we had a whole other concept, which was to build a rail slide on top of the road train. So Travis would like jump to the rail and then the train would be countering, you know, him.

• 1:04:17Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that's super sick, yeah.

• 1:04:19Speaker 01

But it was it was just way outside of budget. Like, you'd be surprised how much metal that is to like make all of that and figure it all out.

• 1:04:25Matt Farah?

  Weight of a car.

• 1:04:27Speaker 01

So I think it's one of those ones where even though Travis is now like this is this was his last film. He doesn't want to do anymore. We're like, it'd be cool to go make that at some point, even if it's just like a standalone.

• 1:04:36Matt Farah?

Did you see that fucking kid YouTuber who built that truck that was like the Mad Max truck that can just like fucking drive through everything?

• 1:04:44Speaker 01

  Oh, Weston.

• 1:04:44Matt Farah?

Yeah, Weston. Yeah, yeah. It has that big like cone on the front.

• 1:04:48Speaker 01

It's great too, because it feels like an episode of Mythbusters. I love it.

• 1:04:51Matt Farah?

That shit is crazy. I don't watch a lot of YouTube, but I saw that. I was like, oh, that clip of him just driving through it, increasing succession of like hard things. Oh, it looked brutal. That was rad. Yeah.

• 1:05:05Speaker 01

I don't know who I don't know who has time to watch all the stuff that's on YouTube. There's like so much out there. Yeah, so much out there. It's always amazing when I run into people and they'll just give me all these updates on what my friends are doing.

• 1:05:16Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:16Speaker 01

I'm like, oh, that's cool. So Vinny, want another car? Weird. I'm in a group chat with him. He didn't mention it to me, but it's on YouTube.

• 1:05:23Matt Farah?

Yeah, right. What did he just get?

• 1:05:25Speaker 01

  He's got a E30 M3.

• 1:05:28Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:05:29Speaker 01

Which was, yeah, he did tell us about that because I think he was like pretty stoked, but sometimes like Vin will buys things that he knows are only going to be around for a little bit. So it's like, he doesn't even mention it. Like, wait, you got that? You know, whatever.

• 1:05:40Matt Farah?

My NSX, because this is going to go up on Thursday. My NSX is going to going up for sale on Cars and Bids. So go go fucking bid on it, please, if you want it, like.

• 1:05:49Speaker 01

What's the spec on that one?

• 1:05:51Matt Farah?

  Oh, five.

• 1:05:51Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:05:52Matt Farah?

  Silver black.

• 1:05:53Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:05:54Matt Farah?

It was the one right downstairs. It's twenty twenty thousand. You do not fit.

• 1:05:57Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:05:58Matt Farah?

  Twenty thousand miles.

• 1:05:59Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:05:59Matt Farah?

Fresh, brand new tires, fresh service, full PPF. It's money. It's fucking money. Absolutely.

• 1:06:05Speaker 01

What are your cars right now? What are you enjoying at the moment?

• 1:06:07Matt Farah?

  The Manx.

• 1:06:08Speaker 01

  That's your thing?

• 1:06:08Matt Farah?

The Manx is the best. And I spoke to.

• 1:06:11Speaker 01

You think I'd fit in the Manx?

• 1:06:12Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah. Yeah.

• 1:06:13Speaker 01

  I've always liked those.

• 1:06:14Matt Farah?

I spoke to Ferdy yesterday, been accepted into Ice Race.

• 1:06:18Speaker 01

  Congratulations.

• 1:06:19Matt Farah?

To uh Manx, they have room on their transporter, but also I have to buy, I basically have to send in the car to get prepped. So I'm gonna have to buy another set of tires that they're going to hand stud. I don't want to know how much that costs, but it's going to be.

• 1:06:38Speaker 01

I've had to do that. Yeah, when we did Sweden, Toyota doesn't make a studded tire for what we needed.

• 1:06:44Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 1:06:45Speaker 01

So we built like an R888, but with studs.

• 1:06:48Matt Farah?

  Whoa.

• 1:06:48Speaker 01

Yeah, which is pretty cool. So it's like WRC spec studs.

• 1:06:51Matt Farah?

  How much was it?

• 1:06:53Speaker 01

I mean, money was no object at that point. I mean, it's like thousands per wheel. Like, you get to a point where you're just like.

• 1:06:59Matt Farah?

It can't be thousands per wheel. That's crazy.

• 1:07:02Speaker 01

But we were, we were doing something extremely bespoke, so I'm sure that you can probably figure it out.

• 1:07:07Matt Farah?

I mean, I would be insane.

• 1:07:09Speaker 01

They didn't allow studs last year, right? This is new.

• 1:07:11Matt Farah?

Well, so last year they were in Aspen, and it was on, wherever it was, the snow was like kinda shitty, which is why they're not doing it there again. Um, now it's in Montana. So they have better surface and they're doing, they are allowing studs.

• 1:07:24Speaker 01

Yeah, I convinced Ashley that it's gonna be a family trip to go this year. Cause my son, you know, he lives in Southern California, so he has like no concept of snow. So she's like, I really wanna do a snow trip. And I'm like, I got this perfect event where skiers get dragged behind 9/11. So I think my son will love this.

• 1:07:40Matt Farah?

Yeah. Are you gonna bring a car?

• 1:07:42Speaker 01

Uh, I'm gonna come with Batim, so hopefully I can drive something that he brings out. So the problem, I always have those, I show up to things like that and people are like, yeah, jump in. Like, I'm 6'8", I don't fit in your race car.

• 1:07:54Matt Farah?

  Shit, yeah, that's a problem.

• 1:07:55Speaker 01

The amount of cars I haven't been able to drive in my life, cause I don't fit.

• 1:07:58Matt Farah?

  That sucks. That's a bummer.

• 1:08:00Speaker 01

Yeah, it's not something like, the tall thing is like rad for like a certain number of years and then it just like wasn't worth it anymore.

• 1:08:06Matt Farah?

I'm right on the line of being able to fit in stuff. So I can fit, kind of.

• 1:08:11Speaker 01

  How tall are you?

• 1:08:12Matt Farah?

I'm 6'2 and 1/2, 3. Yeah, it's right on the line. A lot of stuff, gotta take shoes off, whatever.

• 1:08:17Speaker 01

I heard that before. 6'2 is the shortest tall person.

• 1:08:22Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Exactly. I'm the fittest fat person and the shortest tall person.

• 1:08:28Speaker 01

You look good, by the way.

• 1:08:29Matt Farah?

Thank you. My new proper cloth shirt, is that what it is?

• 1:08:32Speaker 01

  Tailored.

• 1:08:32Matt Farah?

  Yeah, they're a sponsor.

• 1:08:34Speaker 01

Tailored clothes is like a whole other level.

• 1:08:36Matt Farah?

They tailor this shit on the internet.

• 1:08:37Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 1:08:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it's really good.

• 1:08:38Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:08:39Matt Farah?

Pretty, pretty good. I'm into it. Yeah, very nice. Shout out to them.

• 1:08:42Speaker 01

Yeah, I, uh, tailored clothes, I only have like two things I've tailored in my entire life. And you're like, yeah, this is how real adults would dress.

• 1:08:50Matt Farah?

The secret to looking like a celebrity is to have everything tailored. Like your sweatshirts, your fucking t-shirt, everything, like just factor in an extra $15 per garment.

• 1:09:03Matt Farah?

To have everything tailored and you will look like a fucking million dollars. It's it's not simple, not easy.

• 1:09:10Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:09:10Matt Farah?

  But you could do it.

• 1:09:11Speaker 01

Yeah, no, I had a because I have really long arms because I'm so tall. So I have a thirty nine and a half inch arm. So nothing off the shelf fits, right? So and you'll see like I'm always like, it's definitely something I'm like aware of like my, you know, my wrists always showing.

• 1:09:26Matt Farah?

  Covered up, roll up sleeve.

• 1:09:27Speaker 01

I actually think it's one of the reasons I don't wear a watch because it becomes something that like even more exaggerates it, you know? Um, but then I got a bunch of shirts tailored when I got married and I'm like, these like, I wish everything fit me like this.

• 1:09:42Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:42Speaker 01

But I've got too many cars to take care of to tailor my own clothes.

• 1:09:45Matt Farah?

So you sell one car and that will pay for your tailoring for like five years.

• 1:09:50Speaker 01

  Yeah, no, I can't.

• 1:09:51Speaker 02

Which car would you would you sell any of them?

• 1:09:53Speaker 01

I've actually just sold I just sold two.

• 1:09:55Matt Farah?

  What did you sell?

• 1:09:56Speaker 01

So I had an Audi four thousand that I bought in Vancouver and drove down. I bought it during the pandemic. I think I talked about last time on the show.

• 1:10:04Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:05Speaker 01

Bought it and it was super fun, but it served its purpose like its purpose was that road.

• 1:10:09Matt Farah?

  Was that adventure?

• 1:10:09Speaker 01

Yeah. And I sold it to a couple who just recently drove it from my my farm in Fallbrook all the way out to Pennsylvania.

• 1:10:19Matt Farah?

  Nice.

• 1:10:19Speaker 01

And like it got no extra service from the time I drove it down and fixed it to them leaving. I'm like, good luck. And they got out there with no problems.

• 1:10:27Matt Farah?

  Cool.

• 1:10:27Speaker 01

So yeah, it was pretty cool. They got unfortunately, they got pulled over like eight blocks from their house. So.

• 1:10:33Matt Farah?

  No tags?

• 1:10:34Speaker 01

  Uh, no tags. Yeah.

• 1:10:35Matt Farah?

They made it all the way?

• 1:10:36Speaker 01

And they made it all the way, which is pretty, pretty impressive.

• 1:10:38Matt Farah?

I hope the cop let them get the rest of the way home.

• 1:10:40Speaker 01

  I don't think so.

• 1:10:41Matt Farah?

  No?

• 1:10:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:42Matt Farah?

  Oh, that would be.

• 1:10:43Speaker 01

But, uh, yeah, and then I had a Audi A1.

• 1:10:47Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 1:10:47Speaker 01

  Which is a.

• 1:10:49Matt Farah?

  Little hatchback.

• 1:10:49Speaker 01

Yeah, they never sold them here.

• 1:10:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:51Speaker 01

  Um.

• 1:10:52Matt Farah?

Did you buy that on your Euro Car Kane trip?

• 1:10:54Speaker 01

No, I, um, I bought it from someone in Utah and it somehow had a Utah title. So.

• 1:11:00Matt Farah?

  All right.

• 1:11:00Speaker 01

Yeah. They're not that interesting. They're interesting for five minutes, right? It was, I was working, uh, when I left and was working at Superplastic, I was working in, uh, in downtown LA and I was parking in an area that I would walk out and be like, I'm surprised no one broke the window on my RS2. And I realized maybe, maybe street parking in RS2 in downtown LA wasn't a good idea. So I bought this. You can hide in plain sight in an RS2. You can, but, but they'll break into anything in downtown LA. So I was like, yeah, I'll get that. So I got that. And I actually really liked it. It's kind of, it's like a Mark III, it's like a Mark III Golf in terms of the way it drives and feels. But it has just the right new tech. Cause I don't like new cars. I'm like, I don't, like, I just can't get into new cars.

• 1:11:45Speaker 01

But it has Bluetooth audio, which I think is super important. And it has Hill Assist, which I've learned to enjoy. I trashed Hill Assist the first time I ever reviewed it. Cause like, who needs this? Yeah. It's nice. Hill Assist is nice. It's not, it's not bad. It makes driving a manual in traffic. Is it a 1.8? It's a 1.4 turbo. So it makes cool turbo noises. It wasn't really quick, but it was sporty. It was kind of fun. It was easy to park. So, but I started, I sold it the minute I looked at trying to buy coilovers for it. Cause I was like, this, it, it no longer serves its purpose. Like it's, it's, it's crossing into a world. It's like a downpipe for this thing. Yeah, yeah. The minute you're like, the minute I'm sitting there looking at like 1.4 upgrades and then like, I'm like, ah. 1.4 upgrades? No.

• 1:12:29Speaker 01

I have all these other projects that don't. So I got rid of that. Got rid of the 4000. Bought a Vanagon. Nice. I almost brought it here today, but, uh, brought a Vanagon. Is it a camper or is it like a van? It's the minivan one. It's the, uh, it's actually the carat. It's like the Weekender where it doesn't have a pop top, but it's got the rear facing seats. And with a kid, it's great. Cause like, he could sit in the back, like eat dinner, like Ash could be in the back with him. I don't know. I just, and it's also oddly good mobile office, which is nice. Does it have a table? Yeah. It has a table and it's like, let's say I had a conference call after this, like, you know, the parts of our lives that we don't enjoy. I could just be like, all right, I'll just get out, go find a quiet place to park and, and work on it. So like, uh, yeah.

• 1:13:11Matt Farah?

Is it this one, the Weekender? It's like this.

• 1:13:12Speaker 01

No, so mine doesn't have the pop top, but.

• 1:13:15Matt Farah?

  What year is it?

• 1:13:16Speaker 01

  It's a 1990 Vanagon Carrot. Yeah, it's that.

• 1:13:20Matt Farah?

It's like that? Okay, so yeah, so it's got the conference table interior.

• 1:13:23Speaker 01

Yeah, it's the conference table, so.

• 1:13:25Matt Farah?

And then what's behind that third row? Is that a hard shed?

• 1:13:28Speaker 01

I don't have that. Mine's just an open space. I think that's a closet in that one.

• 1:13:31Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah, okay, cool.

• 1:13:32Speaker 01

  But, uh.

• 1:13:33Matt Farah?

That's pretty sweet, though. That would be a good mobile office.

• 1:13:36Speaker 01

Yeah, it's not bad, and I enjoy it. It has, I realize that I'm, I'm aging at a rapid rate right now because just a few years ago, I was trying to build 1,000 horsepower cars.

• 1:13:47Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:48Speaker 01

And now I'm trying to explain that how the gearing in a Vanagon actually makes the 2.1 Vasa Boxer an acceptable amount of power at a measly 90 horsepower. I'm like, it works, I can get up hills. Like, it's not that bad. Why do you have to go so fast? Technically, you're. Why so fast? Why so rushed?

• 1:14:04Matt Farah?

We've had this Delica, same thing, you know, same thing, right, for five, six years now, and it is the fucking best. And part of it is, you are forced to just like go this speed. Like, I can't be in a rush. I can't drive like a dick. Like, this is the speed I go.

• 1:14:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:20Matt Farah?

And like, it's fine up till about 65.

• 1:14:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:23Matt Farah?

  And, uh, and yeah.

• 1:14:24Speaker 01

405 looks so much different from the right lane.

• 1:14:26Matt Farah?

  It really.

• 1:14:27Speaker 01

I've seen things I've never seen before. Including an entire encampment.

• 1:14:32Matt Farah?

That's really fucking funny. Yeah, it does. And we have, ours doesn't have a built-in table, but we have the, we have the facing seats. And so we have a little folding table that does basically the same thing.

• 1:14:42Speaker 01

Facing seats, like, why doesn't that exist more in new cars?

• 1:14:46Matt Farah?

  Probably crash testers.

• 1:14:46Speaker 01

Does like the Kia Carnival have it or something? I think it has like the move. I don't know, I'm not like.

• 1:14:51Matt Farah?

I just rented a Carnival. I don't think they swivel like that, though.

• 1:14:54Speaker 01

I, I just think that, but crash testing doesn't make sense either because, like, being backwards in a car is actually probably safer. Well, I think if you got rear-ended, it might be worse, but if you get, but you crash. The percentage of like fatal rears are like, rear end is, you're usually moving, unless you're at a dead stop, but even then, it's, it's whatever the impact. But usually if you're moving at whatever speed someone else hits you, it's the reduction of those two. I agree. Where like a head-on collision is the most dangerous. I wonder if there's a frequency though. T-bone is the most, is the most.

• 1:15:22Matt Farah?

  T-bone is definitely.

• 1:15:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:24Matt Farah?

I don't know why they don't have rear-facing seats anymore.

• 1:15:27Speaker 01

I don't know. They were like, they were great. They were great. I mean, remember as a kid?

• 1:15:30Matt Farah?

I liked the bad, the wagon.

• 1:15:31Speaker 01

  Yeah, the Volvo wagon.

• 1:15:33Matt Farah?

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:15:33Speaker 01

Just like a kid with you. I mean, that I could see being in a rear-end accident being really bad because your feet are in the crumple zone.

• 1:15:39Matt Farah?

So that's the Porsche nine seventeen crumple zones of station wagons.

• 1:15:43Speaker 01

It's wild having a child now because I think about safety in my cars in a way that I never did before. Right? Like, I won't.

• 1:15:51Matt Farah?

I'll survive this crash, but not him.

• 1:15:53Speaker 01

Yeah, or it's like, I might not survive this crash, but I've made that decision by driving this car. Right? Like, I knew that getting into this.

• 1:16:01Matt Farah?

I went down having a good ass.

• 1:16:02Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah. And it's like, I won't get on the highway with him in my rabbit.

• 1:16:07Matt Farah?

  Oh, really?

• 1:16:08Speaker 01

Yeah, cuz like the the A pillars like made of like number two pencils. And like, I don't even know the Tycon deroga. Like, like, like, it's, that thing would just completely crush.

• 1:16:17Matt Farah?

When I drive the Manx around, it's, you know, I'm outside.

• 1:16:20Speaker 01

The thing I like the most about the Manx is it doesn't seem like it should be illegal. Like, that's why I want a Manx, cuz I'm like, this doesn't seem like it should be allowed on the road.

• 1:16:29Matt Farah?

  Shady, but it's great.

• 1:16:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:30Matt Farah?

It's so fucking fun. Everything about it is is fucking so awesome. It makes me so happy.

• 1:16:36Speaker 01

I need to get the drive on.

• 1:16:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:39Speaker 01

Oh, they'll let you borrow one of those. What's your, what's your, um, what's your like weather plan for Montana in the Manx? Like, are you gonna, uh, you got like a full, like Arctic level suit?

• 1:16:49Matt Farah?

I'm basically just gonna dress like I'm skiing.

• 1:16:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, okay.

• 1:16:52Matt Farah?

Right? It's not gonna be like worse than colder than when I'm skiing, right?

• 1:16:56Speaker 01

No, you'll be going slower probably.

• 1:16:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:58Speaker 01

  Do you remember Matt Tassillo?

• 1:16:59Matt Farah?

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:17:00Speaker 01

So when we went and shot in Sweden, it was like minus thirty.

• 1:17:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:03Speaker 01

Matt Tassillo was so afraid of the weather cuz he's just, you know, big love to Matt Tassillo, but, uh, he's just like someone who is always anticipating disaster. Like, his entire life is just, this could go wrong.

• 1:17:16Matt Farah?

Important role for people like that.

• 1:17:17Speaker 01

Yeah, and that was his job, right? He was the managing editor at Zero Sixty, and then he was sort of like, he was the adult in the room, uh, you know, for Ken's team. And, um, and now he's over at Hagerty. Um, but now he has to deal with.

• 1:17:29Matt Farah?

Insurance. He ends up in insurance, of course.

• 1:17:32Speaker 01

Exactly where he belongs. But no, he's on the content side, but yeah. But, um. Matt bought this onesie, like a north face onesie, like the things you, like you only wear this if you had to go to like Antarctica. And like, look, the rest of us would dress warm, but this guy would walk out and he looked like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, but it was all yellow, which was just insane. I think you need something like that.

• 1:17:53Matt Farah?

Well, so for a long time for snowboarding, I had a onesie and it was amazing.

• 1:18:01Speaker 01

Can I say something? You don't strike me as a snowboarder.

• 1:18:03Matt Farah?

  Oh, really?

• 1:18:04Speaker 01

  Yeah, I don't know why.

• 1:18:05Matt Farah?

  Cause I'm very hot.

• 1:18:06Speaker 01

I think it's, I think it's the height side of you. You look like a skier.

• 1:18:10Matt Farah?

I am now. Uh, well, I started skiing when I was a kid. When I was 13, everybody switched to snowboarding.

• 1:18:16Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:18:17Matt Farah?

Like all my friends and every, including me, we all switched. And then I went back to skiing when I was like 39 or 40.

• 1:18:24Speaker 01

  Um.

• 1:18:25Matt Farah?

  And I'm so happy.

• 1:18:26Speaker 01

  Where did you snowboard?

• 1:18:27Matt Farah?

  In New York.

• 1:18:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:28Matt Farah?

Uh, we would go to, mostly at Killington.

• 1:18:31Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:18:31Matt Farah?

Likes Killington a lot and we would do Hunter Mountain and Wyndham for day trips. But Killington, I think was the best of the east coast mountains.

• 1:18:38Speaker 01

Yeah, it was, uh, Stowe was the best.

• 1:18:39Matt Farah?

Stowe was the best snow, but Killington was the biggest.

• 1:18:42Speaker 01

  The biggest mountain.

• 1:18:42Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:43Speaker 01

I was, I was a snowboard instructor at Wyndham.

• 1:18:45Matt Farah?

  Oh, really?

• 1:18:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:46Matt Farah?

  Nice.

• 1:18:47Speaker 01

I taught snowboarding at Wyndham and then I was like a, I went to University of Vermont, so I was a local at Stowe.

• 1:18:52Matt Farah?

  Oh, cool.

• 1:18:52Speaker 01

So I was like, I did a hundred days between there and, uh, Sunday River.

• 1:18:57Matt Farah?

Wow, Sunday River. Everyone, a bunch of my, a bunch of my friends went to Gould Academy, which was at Sunday River in Maine, and they would ski the second half of the day in the winter. It was fucking amazing.

• 1:19:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:19:07Matt Farah?

That's just about as cold as I've ever been skiing at Sunday River.

• 1:19:11Speaker 01

  Uh.

• 1:19:12Matt Farah?

  It is cold.

• 1:19:13Speaker 01

Yeah. Have you ever gone to, uh, Lake Placid, the Whiteface?

• 1:19:16Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:16Speaker 01

They give you a blanket when you get on.

• 1:19:18Matt Farah?

  And Whistler.

• 1:19:19Speaker 01

  Was there one?

• 1:19:20Matt Farah?

My bachelor party at Whistler in February was fucking cold, but it was, the skiing was incredible. Whistler was amazing.

• 1:19:27Speaker 01

I'm not, I've, I've actually have very limited west coast riding in me. Like I've done a bunch with Ken, but it was like, I was no longer a good snowboarder. Like I had this period of time where I was like really good and then I don't know, I just wasn't there anymore.

• 1:19:41Matt Farah?

Now I just enjoy being out there and cruise, but if we're going ice racing, let's, let's fucking get a day.

• 1:19:46Speaker 01

If I can get a good knee brace, yeah, I'm down.

• 1:19:49Matt Farah?

I, I ski with two knee braces on. I had a bad crash like 15 years ago, so I still ski with knee braces.

• 1:19:54Speaker 01

Yeah, I was just reckless as a kid and every time my dad said to me, you're gonna feel that when you're older. I was like, whatever. Woke up one morning, I'm like, oh shit, this is what he was talking about.

• 1:20:03Matt Farah?

Pretty much, but like, uh, my Manks has heated seats. So that's, that's my plan and I'm gonna dress like I'm skiing and I'm gonna take the roof off. Um, and they said they're going to prep it, but aside from tires, like, I don't know what the fuck that means.

• 1:20:18Speaker 01

Is there a handbrake in that?

• 1:20:20Matt Farah?

Probably not. I mean, there's a parking brake.

• 1:20:22Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:20:23Matt Farah?

  It's rear engine, rear drive.

• 1:20:25Speaker 01

You'll be fine, yeah, yeah, yeah, you'll be fine.

• 1:20:29Matt Farah?

I mean, and if it's like a complete mess, like, who gives a shit? It's like, it's silly. It's, I have my Bentley sheepskin floor mats. Ready for winter.

• 1:20:38Speaker 01

I got it. I like it. Yeah, I don't know.

• 1:20:40Matt Farah?

This might be a terrible idea, I don't know.

• 1:20:41Speaker 01

I think it's gonna, it'd be so fun. I didn't go last year, it looked like a lot of fun, but it did look like the driving was maybe not on the same tier that I'm used to seeing in like the European.

• 1:20:51Matt Farah?

This seems to, aims to fix that.

• 1:20:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:20:53Matt Farah?

And Ali's going, his car, do you know Ali Javadon? Our buddy?

• 1:20:56Speaker 01

  No, I don't.

• 1:20:57Matt Farah?

Oh, he's the Range Energy guy, the hybrid, hybrid truck. He also has this like sick BMW 2002 like race car. He's going and, uh, he rented a house that I'm, that we're getting in on, so it'll be fun as fuck.

• 1:21:08Speaker 01

I'd wanted to, I didn't, uh, get my shit together in time, but I'd wanted to try to submit to bring my Audi Coupe Quattro there. Which would be cool, cause it's like, it's this close to running, it'd give me a reason to finish it. Like, a thousand horsepower is a great place on the snow.

• 1:21:22Matt Farah?

  Yeah, we saw it, yeah.

• 1:21:24Speaker 01

Yeah, so, um, you know, we're trying to get that done, but, uh, I, I, I'm, but Tim's going, it's just what is he bringing and I'm trying to get him to bring.

• 1:21:32Matt Farah?

That your car would be awesome.

• 1:21:33Speaker 01

  Yeah, it'd be cool.

• 1:21:35Matt Farah?

Doesn't your car have an iRaz engine in it too?

• 1:21:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:38Matt Farah?

What was it, what was like the thing that kept it from working like two years ago when you walked away from this?

• 1:21:43Speaker 01

It's just the clutch doesn't engage properly and like.

• 1:21:46Matt Farah?

  How hard is that?

• 1:21:47Speaker 01

It's a weekend worth of work. So it's a weekend worth of work to get that done, but then it's a, but then it becomes the final 2% of a project, which is, you know, just the teething of all the things. I mean, there's nothing on that car that. Hasn't been changed since it got taken apart. So like nothing's, everything's gonna break. So like, everything's gonna need to be developed. And this is the thing that no one tells you when you build YouTube cars. Is that you can get all the parts. You can find all the people to help you build it. You can weld it all together. You can make it look right. You can even get to drive out of the parking lot, but then getting it to work as you intended is what takes a race team.

• 1:22:27Speaker 01

And I should know this because I did this with a race team, working with WRC level cars. And just the amount of development it took to get a lot of, even the unicorn and things like that to work the way we wanted it to.

• 1:22:41Speaker 01

I have now built a car that is so beyond my capability, not only as a driver, but also in terms of just like my ability to troubleshoot why things are working. So I'm just scared of it at this point. And just scared of like, I'm gonna, I know exactly what's gonna happen. Can you make it drive like a normal ass car or can it only drive like fucking unicorn light? It's like full race car now. It's like, it's, everything about it is on, is on the level. Like the minute I pulled the entire chassis harness out of the car and I'm like, I'm gonna rewire the whole thing and run a PDM in the car. Which means like, in order to, if I change my taillight, I have to plug a laptop in to tell it that I changed the taillight. It's like, I don't know why I did this to myself. Yeah. Taking things apart before you know how you're gonna put them back together is a fucking, that's a, that's a bad call.

• 1:23:26Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm really good at starting things. I was, I started the shit out of that project. It's the finishing part. And you got it to SEMA. Like it was at, like it was at SEMA? And then I got a fire and all that. I don't know if you saw the episode that I did with Vinny on it, but it was really funny because I just like, just compared it to like, this is not, this is what YouTube tells you to build, but at the end of the day, the RS2 is like such a better car because I get to drive it all the time. It works. Yeah, I compared it to is like, I was like, this is what you see on Pornhub that like you never get to do. And like, the RS2 is like, it's like missionary maybe, like verse cowgirl, like. Look, it's usable. It's very usable. It's not the most exciting thing you've ever seen in your life, but it's usable. In this, in this Instagram post though, it looks amazing.

• 1:24:11Speaker 01

It really does. It's a really good statue. I built a pretty good statue. I'm pretty stoked on it. You should hang it on the fucking wall. I hang it at BBI. It's great. Yeah. So, and it's awesome because I don't have to pay storage because Tim doesn't seem to mind it there. That's crazy. That's crazy, they have very limited. That's how I avoid, that's how I avoid, you know, giving you money is I just like, hey, you mind if I leave this in your showroom? I mean, sure.

• 1:24:35Speaker 02

That's what it looked like when it was stock?

• 1:24:36Speaker 01

Yeah, pretty much. Well, just lowered, yeah, lowered on wheels. Actually, it's still pretty far from stock there, but it was non-turbo.

• 1:24:43Speaker 02

  It has the bodywork, yeah.

• 1:24:44Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah, so. But, yeah, why shouldn't it be a thousand horsepower and run on methanol and, you know? Vinnie and I did a whole episode about how this is that scope creep when you build something for the internet. That like, what I, that was never my intention. My intention was to build, was to finish a project that I started in 2004 and then let's sit, which was like to build a really fun street car. Yeah. And instead I built a full-blown race car. Like, there's not even a passenger seat in this thing. Like, it's a full-blown race car that like, we both know won't be that good on track.

• 1:25:14Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:25:14Speaker 01

Because I'm not a race car engineer. I built something that looks cool. It'll probably do some things very well. And is it all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive? It's all-wheel drive, yeah. Quattro system, so paddle shift.

• 1:25:25Speaker 02

Did this slippery slope happen because, because you knew everyone in the ma- uh, modification industry, basically? Did you have people come up to you like drug pushers and go, "Hey, we could get you this, we could do this, you could do that." And you went, "Oh, yeah, okay." And then it just drifts away from your control?

• 1:25:39Speaker 01

That's the access you have when you create, build content and have a huge audience, which we did at Hoonigan, where someone will say, "Hey, I heard you doing this." Like, you know, why would you not have, you know, a sequential transmission? Why would you not have this? Not have an ILS engine? And even if it's not, um, even if they're not like completely comping it out or you're doing like a marketing trade-out, it's always at a discount. Yeah. And it's like a good sale. Like, my grandma would never pass up a good sale, you know? Yeah, I don't need a fucking X-Track gearbox, but like, ooh, it's 75% off. Why wouldn't I want one? Yeah, and it becomes like that. And it also became this weird competition between Ken and I,

• 1:26:21Speaker 01

because Ken was having, you know, he took this LCE car and was sort of refinishing it. And, and it made me want to push mine to be better than his. So I was like, "I'm gonna have more power, more of this, more of that." Like, I couldn't beat the man at 95% of the things he did. So I was like, "Oh, let me try to do this." The difference is, is he got his car to run at the end, but that's because he had like an entire race team building it. I built this with a few buddies.

• 1:26:42Speaker 02

Right, so, yeah. Like, I saw what Ron went through with his crazy Evo. And it was, it's like what you did. It was like a 900 horsepower Gymkhana car.

• 1:26:50Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:26:50Speaker 02

But it broke like every time he drove it until the final month when he owned it, it seemed like. You know, he ran it a couple of times, but it's like, it's a full-built race car trying to drive around on the street.

• 1:26:59Speaker 01

And you just, you start to change so many things that it doesn't, like, it's, it is really actually like just rude to think when you're building something like that, that it's gonna work. Right? Yeah, yeah. Like, you're not gonna make it not drive like an Audi. Yeah. Like, yeah. I mean, the engine still sits 19 feet in front of the wheels. It's still gonna do a certain thing. But no, I think it's just, uh, it's a lot to get that and then develop it. And I don't think that the YouTube model actually supports the development part. So you get to this point, and that's the finishing line. People don't really wanna watch four episodes of you at the track making minor adjustments or trying to understand why this one AN fitting continues to leak

• 1:27:43Speaker 01

or, you know, that you used way too many Heim joints and like you've rattled the entire, you know, you've riled your fillings out, or this isn't doing this, or this is binding because you did this. Like, that's not fun. No, the cosmetic reveal is it. That you're, once, as far as YouTube's concerned, you're fucking done. I remember we did, when ACP and I did a TV show at Discovery Channel. We built this Rolls Royce, which later became the Hoonigan Rolls. But in the beginning, we did it for the show Car Saviors. And they said to us, "Well, you guys have to paint it." I'm like, "Well, I kinda like how it looks. Like, it has like a cool look." Very raw metal. And they're like, "No, you don't understand. This entire show is about the color transformation. We don't care what else you do, as long as we get to come back from commercial break."

• 1:28:28Speaker 01

And it's a different color. Pull a sheet off. That's it. Yeah. And I think the car was silver and blue, and we made it blue over silver. Which, like, they were not... Cause I just bought them on it and then

• 1:28:39Matt Farah?

  Sure.

• 1:28:39Speaker 01

  No surprises.

• 1:28:41Matt Farah?

But that's it, but like sad but true, completely accurate. Like that, that marketing person was absolutely fucking right. And it sucks that that's what like build shows, you know, are.

• 1:28:51Speaker 01

Have you owned a serious build since your Mustang? Or was that really?

• 1:28:56Matt Farah?

  No, I learned.

• 1:28:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:28:57Matt Farah?

Well, listen, a lot says the fucking guy with a disassembled Lamborghini Countach. But, but not, that's not a, I mean, maybe it's the same thing, I guess. Because, because this, this car was absolutely running and driving when I drove it to Donny's house to fix the window crank.

• 1:29:15Speaker 01

  Is it still not running?

• 1:29:17Matt Farah?

No, it's not put back together.

• 1:29:19Speaker 01

We've been talking about, I've been on the show like three times in three years.

• 1:29:21Matt Farah?

  It's been three years.

• 1:29:22Speaker 01

We've talked about it every time.

• 1:29:23Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it's been three years.

• 1:29:23Speaker 01

  Probably my coop too.

• 1:29:24Matt Farah?

Yeah, it's three years. That post says 2021, huh, baby? So I think you fucking win.

• 1:29:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:32Matt Farah?

No, no, yeah, but I mean, I, you know, I have other shit to drive. But no, but I, I did learn after that, that I didn't want to do those types of go where no one's been before builds anymore.

• 1:29:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:44Matt Farah?

So like after that, it was like, Lee Keane, I'm sending the wire and a stock car and you call me with a bill and a fucking finished product, you know? And then, hey, Rick Demand, sending you a brand new Spyder, fucking ship it when it's done, you know? And that's, and that's worked out.

• 1:30:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:01Matt Farah?

It's worked out. I get to drive the crazy thing that I wanted to drive without doing the bullshit.

• 1:30:05Speaker 01

Yeah, unfortunately crazy builds for me, they're like that toxic, like ex-girlfriend, like you don't avoid her text messages. It's just like, I, I'll sit there and be like, yeah, I'm never gonna do this again. And then I'm like, you know, that car does need an all-wheel drive swap and a turbo 1.4 and all that, and you just get into it.

• 1:30:21Speaker 02

Do you think that that, is that part of your brain, like the same creative brain that has led to so many amazing projects, channels, et cetera, wants to go all the way to 11 with project cars? Or do you think they're totally different? It's just like, I don't know, what is it about your car life that has led to you wanting to have those kinds of cars?

• 1:30:38Speaker 01

I really enjoy the paper build part. Like, I enjoy the research and the concept and thinking about it. It's like, there's a car right now that I don't even tell anyone about, because I don't think anyone would be interested about it. I have a car that I bought as a parts car, because I wanted to steal the interior out of it for my Rabbit, right? The Mark I's are harder and harder to find, so like, if I find one for cheap and it's got the right parts, like, I'll grab it. That's one of the downsides of having a farm.

• 1:31:05Matt Farah?

  When farm becomes junkyard.

• 1:31:06Speaker 01

Yes, yes, yes, yes. We call it Avicato Farm and Salvage for a reason. But, um, that car is, uh, it was gonna be a parts car. And then I ended up getting the title mailed to me, and I'm like, oh, this has like a non-salvage title. It's clean, and the car could be restored. So I dream all the time about how I'm gonna restore this car, but how I'm gonna do it as if I was still 22.

• 1:31:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:33Speaker 01

So instead of just going and throwing money at it and buying all new stuff for it and all these things, like, I'm just like slowly acquiring like cheap parts from Marketplace or buying other parts cars. I don't know why this excites me. Because I could, I have other Mark, well, I have another Mark I Rabbit that's nicer.

• 1:31:50Matt Farah?

That's when cars were most exciting to you, so you're going, doing back to that. I think about Fox bodies all the time, even though when I was driving Fox bodies, I was thinking about the shit I have now all the time.

• 1:32:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:03Matt Farah?

  It's weird.

• 1:32:03Speaker 01

It is weird like that. Yeah, so anyway, I dream about building like a really simple Rabbit that's just a really good daily driver that I really enjoy and sort of saving that car. But I like, I am doing it the cheapest way possible, and my other friends are like, why would you do that headache? Like, just get a new part. Like, why are you trying to go to a junkyard to go find this one thing? And it's like, I don't know, I kind of enjoy the, I enjoy the hunt.

• 1:32:26Matt Farah?

The hunt, because you're giving yourself a challenge.

• 1:32:28Speaker 01

Yeah. Plus, we're also, you do, as we're all that age now, where we are the new muscle car guys. We're the new generation of...

• 1:32:37Speaker 01

You know, that, like, you build your car and it's nostalgia and you drive it listening to music from that era. Like, I drive around in my RS2, like, listening to Mob Deep. I'm like, "Oh my god, I am my stepdad, driving around in his Volkswagen thing, listening to the Beach Boys."

• 1:32:51Matt Farah?

So, we are, we are doing a little bit of a project. I, I'm sorry if you've heard this before, but I got a free Mercedes. A 124 cab.

• 1:32:59Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 1:32:59Matt Farah?

  95. So, we're, I'm converting it with Shant from CMS Motorsports

• 1:33:05Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:33:06Matt Farah?

to a full E500 convertible that never existed.

• 1:33:10Speaker 01

  I like this.

• 1:33:10Matt Farah?

  Just to fucking ride dirty.

• 1:33:12Speaker 01

  I like this.

• 1:33:13Matt Farah?

  It's red, red-black.

• 1:33:15Speaker 01

  Oh, nice.

• 1:33:15Matt Farah?

We're gonna do, we're gonna do a herringbone interior, dope stereo.

• 1:33:20Speaker 01

So, you are about to get into a pretty crazy project. That's a good one, though.

• 1:33:24Matt Farah?

It's just a little powertrain swap.

• 1:33:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:33:26Matt Farah?

One to another, no big deal.

• 1:33:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:33:28Matt Farah?

  NBD.

• 1:33:28Speaker 01

Have you seen the guy who has the, um, I've seen him, like, up in Malibu in the past. He has the, uh, it's like a 300 wagon, but it's, like, full 500 E swap.

• 1:33:39Matt Farah?

  The, the red one?

• 1:33:39Speaker 01

  Red one, yeah.

• 1:33:40Matt Farah?

  That's him.

• 1:33:40Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:33:41Matt Farah?

  That, he's, he's doing it.

• 1:33:42Speaker 01

Small world, there we go, that guy.

• 1:33:43Matt Farah?

He won't sell me that car, so I'm having him build me a convertible instead.

• 1:33:46Speaker 01

Yeah, that thing is super rad.

• 1:33:48Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah. He also did the, uh, he did the, uh, at Pebble Beach this year, the white shooting brake.

• 1:33:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, okay.

• 1:33:54Matt Farah?

  You see that thing?

• 1:33:54Speaker 01

  I didn't know that was a thing.

• 1:33:55Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, this, this dude, Shant.

• 1:33:57Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:33:58Matt Farah?

  Yeah. He fucking rules.

• 1:34:00Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:34:00Matt Farah?

That, so this, uh, this white one.

• 1:34:04Speaker 01

  I'm sorry.

• 1:34:04Matt Farah?

  It's the real motherfucker.

• 1:34:06Speaker 01

I thought that was the third.

• 1:34:06Matt Farah?

Where is it? Is it, no, that's a wagon. That one's just a wagon.

• 1:34:11Speaker 01

  That's what he had.

• 1:34:11Matt Farah?

But there's, the, the one they, uh, they did for Pebble, which was this white, uh, that's it on the right.

• 1:34:17Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:34:18Matt Farah?

Um, and it looks like it has blue tint.

• 1:34:21Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:34:21Matt Farah?

  It does not.

• 1:34:22Speaker 01

  Is it the interior?

• 1:34:23Matt Farah?

The interior is that color. It has perfectly clear windows. It's the fucking coolest.

• 1:34:31Speaker 01

I really want to do an all one color interior. I feel like it's such a like mid nineties thing that has been forgotten and now like obviously you see them on nine elevens but it was something that was super cool in the Volkswagen world. It's like you'd have a black car and then you would have just like a mint interior.

• 1:34:48Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:49Speaker 01

It's just wheels, simple, and then the interior, but it's like every single part of it is wrapped.

• 1:34:54Matt Farah?

That was like the funk flex celebrity car show era of fucking tuning.

• 1:34:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:59Matt Farah?

  For sure.

• 1:35:00Speaker 01

Did you have the pleasure of knowing Flex?

• 1:35:02Matt Farah?

  Never met the man.

• 1:35:03Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 1:35:03Matt Farah?

  No, you probably.

• 1:35:04Speaker 01

We were, we were like actually like pretty friendly because I worked in hip hop for so long.

• 1:35:09Matt Farah?

That show was actually rad though. It was a really good car show. It was fun.

• 1:35:12Speaker 01

He did a great job with that. And he was a real car guy.

• 1:35:15Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:35:16Speaker 01

I think he was one of the, like, I think like the same way people look at Leno.

• 1:35:19Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:20Speaker 01

Where it's like, oh, you don't just have cars to have them. Like, if you get into a conversation with him, he would sit there and just like really, really just, you know, dial in on something.

• 1:35:28Matt Farah?

Yeah, and you know, the one I really want to go to is the Rick Ross car show. Did we talk about this last time you were here? I feel like we fucking did.

• 1:35:35Speaker 01

I don't know if we did, maybe. Yeah, but I actually just on my podcast that drops tomorrow with Hurt, which is yesterday for when this one comes out, we actually talked about the Rick Ross show because he went. Because I've never gone. I've only got to see it from the outside.

• 1:35:49Matt Farah?

  I gotta go.

• 1:35:49Speaker 01

  So.

• 1:35:50Matt Farah?

  Did Hurt say?

• 1:35:51Speaker 01

He thought it could be better. He didn't want to talk badly about it, but he definitely felt like, you know, he was expecting something different, but he did admit that from like donk culture, it's given everybody like a reason to build something crazy. Like that to me, the way I see it from the outside is it's like the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

• 1:36:11Matt Farah?

  For donks?

• 1:36:12Speaker 01

  For donks.

• 1:36:13Matt Farah?

  Whoa.

• 1:36:13Speaker 01

Right? Like, like the guys are building.

• 1:36:15Matt Farah?

That's the best marketing campaign that's, you know, they're like racing up his driveway.

• 1:36:20Speaker 01

  Yeah, there's a, there's a.

• 1:36:21Matt Farah?

  Donk hill climb.

• 1:36:22Speaker 01

If you want to search for the audience watching, Bobby Brown Donk. That's, I think that was either the winner or second place. And like this car was, is really, really.

• 1:36:30Matt Farah?

  Downtown Bobby Brown's Donk.

• 1:36:34Speaker 01

I mean, this is, you know, I probably like a half million dollar or even more.

• 1:36:39Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:39Speaker 01

  Into it. It's kinda great.

• 1:36:40Matt Farah?

But it's up on this like mirror stand with the fucking wheels taken off of it.

• 1:36:45Speaker 01

It's like low, it's low rider culture of like the eighties and nineties now on the donk level.

• 1:36:50Matt Farah?

But it's got like a fucking Nelson.

• 1:36:53Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure it makes, I'm sure it makes like thirty two hundred horse. So.

• 1:36:57Matt Farah?

Wow, look at that. Those fucking brakes are all gold. Everything's gold. All gold, everything. Speaking, you know a ton about wheels. I had a question about wheels. The other day I was driving this Ferrari eight twelve. Can you just grab the picture of that from Instagram? Is that the eight, not the eight twelve, I'm sorry, the new twelve C.

• 1:37:15Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:37:16Matt Farah?

So here's the wheels. And so they're doing a Daytona throwback is basically what this car is, right? And I thought, wouldn't it be fucking sick if you put wires on this? But like, is there a set of wires that would, like, that would work, that would look right, that would hold up to Ferrari driving? Cause there's a way to fuck up wires for sure.

• 1:37:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:38Matt Farah?

Is there a wire, like, if you wanted to throw back Barani wire wheels, could that be done visually effectively on this car?

• 1:37:46Speaker 01

I mean, I don't know if I, I don't know if it would ever be like toof, like approved, but you could definitely probably get them to fit because the wires mount very similar to like a set, like a.

• 1:37:57Matt Farah?

  Center lock?

• 1:37:58Speaker 01

Center lock, right? Like you have like the hub and then you have like the knockoffs that hold them on. I searched twine winch wire wheel, they exist. I can't imagine they have the structural integrity that you probably need, but then again, I don't know, man, bicycles use spokes and.

• 1:38:12Matt Farah?

They lean. They don't experience lateral Gs.

• 1:38:16Speaker 01

I did go to school for mechanical engineering, but I don't know this.

• 1:38:19Matt Farah?

I don't think they would, I don't think they would handle.

• 1:38:21Speaker 01

I never got my diploma, so you know, there it is. I am diplomaless.

• 1:38:25Matt Farah?

I think they would collapse under fucking point two lateral Gs, but it, I think it would, could look cool.

• 1:38:32Speaker 01

Uh, you should do it just for the vibes. It's, it would be pretty cool.

• 1:38:36Matt Farah?

I saw a guy not long ago here in Los Angeles that had a black C eight Corvette on like fifteen inch Dayton's.

• 1:38:46Matt Farah?

  And I was mesmerized.

• 1:38:49Speaker 01

I live in Long Beach. This is normal weekend stuff you see at Trader Joe's.

• 1:38:54Matt Farah?

  That's crazy.

• 1:38:55Speaker 01

Long Beach has a car culture that is stuck in the 90s. Like, it's not because 90s is cool again. It's like, no, these guys still have the same, like, old body style, like, slammed on wires. They, everyone still drives around in G-bodies on, like, wires or on, with, like, you know, mustard and yellows.

• 1:39:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:39:14Speaker 01

Or they've got, it's just like, and the amount of, like, lowrider, but also, like, lowrider-adjacent culture. So it's not like your classic lowrider. It's like your town car on wires. You know, that is still a normal occurrence. I see more of that. I don't see a lot of supercars in Long Beach, but I see a lot of that.

• 1:39:30Speaker 02

Is that because Long Beach got super famous in the 90s from Snoop Dogg and whatnot? And they're just like, yes, this is our moment. We're holding on to it?

• 1:39:36Speaker 01

Um, I, I think that culturally, you just have a large collection of, like, from Whittier to Long Beach. Like, this still, like, the mecca for lowrider culture. I think, like, you still see a lot of that there. Um, and, I mean, there's just, the crazy thing about Long Beach is, like, there's just coves of Long Beach that are so different.

• 1:39:55Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:55Speaker 01

Like, it's just so, it's such a different, it reminds me of Queens, which is why I enjoy living there. Where it's like, you go walk 20 feet and you're, like, in a completely different neighborhood, completely different, like, aesthetic and, and all of that. So I think you get that piece of it. But yeah, I mean, I think, you know, I think Long Beach is long-baked in, like, lowrider culture and all of that. But at the same time, have you been to the All Makes Meat?

• 1:40:16Matt Farah?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:40:16Speaker 01

I don't wanna, man, I'm afraid I'm gonna, like, blow it up because it'll be too big. But there's a meat that done there by a coffee shop called Good Time. And it is one of the best naturally curated cars and coffee I've ever been to. Because it's just such a great collection of weird and random stuff. But you've got everything from, like, you know, Rob the Crook will show up in his Mercy Alago on BBS RSs, which is, like, super cool to see. But yeah, I mean, there you go. Like, you'll just see, like, such a cool collection of, like, random stuff. And it's always amazing because it's Long Beach. But I think you get this mix of, like, people who don't.

• 1:40:54Matt Farah?

Oh, wait, I have been. Been here.

• 1:40:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:57Matt Farah?

Yes, I sorry, I kinda forgot, I'm sorry. LeBron took me here. I have been here.

• 1:41:02Speaker 01

Yeah, it's very, it's very good, very fun. Um, but I, it's, it's interesting because there's a lot of stuff hidden in Long Beach. But at that point, I, part of the Long Beach thing is we don't talk about Long Beach because we don't want people from LA to move there. So, yeah.

• 1:41:13Matt Farah?

I'm not. I can't do it. I like it. I very much like Long Beach.

• 1:41:17Speaker 01

I loved Venice. I lived here for 10 years, but I had to go. I mean, you and I lived like five blocks.

• 1:41:22Matt Farah?

I don't live in Venice anymore either. Yeah, I get it. I understand. But I, I like Long Beach very much. Whenever I'm in Long Beach, I go, if I didn't have to leave here, I would totally move here. But I have to be in LA a lot, so I can't live down there.

• 1:41:34Speaker 01

I will say coming back here, uh, for this, getting off at the 90, like I forgot how much I love that turn.

• 1:41:40Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:41:41Speaker 01

But you know the turn I'm talking about, right? 405 North, onto the 90.

• 1:41:44Matt Farah?

With the bump in the middle?

• 1:41:46Speaker 01

And it's, I came on in the S8 and it's like, I knew it. I had never driven in that car, but I, I knew exactly where it was. It was like, this is a 1010 corner.

• 1:41:54Matt Farah?

The very, so, so the very first time I took that exit ramp, I'm gonna take it back to 07. My first time in LA as a professional video maker.

• 1:42:06Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:42:06Matt Farah?

Amel Rensing picks me up at the airport in his Audi RS4.

• 1:42:10Speaker 01

How is Amel doing these days?

• 1:42:11Matt Farah?

I don't know. Don't care. I'm parole, hopefully. Don't give a fuck. Picks me up in the RS4. Hits the, and for some inexplicable reason, goes on down Century to the 405 to go to Venice, which nobody fucking would ever do. He did. So, hits that thing and he points out that bump because there's gonna be a bump in the middle of this and I'm gonna pass this fucking car on the outside. And did what in hindsight would probably be considered fairly reckless, uh, driving, but I, that, that exit ramp has been seared into my brain ever since. We have that, this whole area, uh, between the 105 and the 90, our, the 105 fucking cloverleaf.

• 1:42:52Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 1:42:53Matt Farah?

Exceptionally good, exceptionally good. And I don't wanna say exactly which entrance ramp is by my house, but the 405 entrance ramp by my house is a half a mile long and only a single fucking lane and boy, can you let her. Yeah.

• 1:43:07Speaker 01

Yeah, it's it's it's interesting because I during the pandemic like you learn a lot of like the really good clovers because you're just bored and you want to go drive but now you know that I'm in you know I have the place in North County San Diego it's like I don't need that anymore.

• 1:43:22Matt Farah?

  You have farm roads.

• 1:43:23Speaker 01

Yeah, I have farm roads and it's the best thing because I just I don't even really drive them that fast but I just drive them enough to have fun in the car.

• 1:43:29Matt Farah?

Going back to visit my folks in Greenwich like for Thanksgiving just to to pull out of the house and just be on a road that just does this and everywhere you go you're just on a road that does this and I'm like oh yeah this is why people like buy cars that handle well for like everyday driving like I haven't needed that in so long.

• 1:43:48Speaker 01

Do you know Tommy F yeah?

• 1:43:50Matt Farah?

  Yeah, he's up there.

• 1:43:51Speaker 01

Yeah, so I we were going back and forth from his shop to Lime Rock.

• 1:43:54Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:43:55Speaker 01

It was almost as much fun getting to Lime Rock as driving Lime Rock.

• 1:43:58Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:43:59Speaker 01

Those roads are just so good. It's like, man, you get to drive that every day. It's really good.

• 1:44:03Matt Farah?

Uh, we don't have to stop this show, but I have to pee. So y'all talk amongst yourselves.

• 1:44:07Speaker 01

I decided that I'm just gonna pee when I feel like it.

• 1:44:09Matt Farah?

That's right. You know, Zach needs his moment. I'm having it. Have your fucking show.

• 1:44:14Speaker 02

We can do it without you. Whoops. I chose the wrong cameras.

• 1:44:17Matt Farah?

Maybe we can't. Maybe we can't.

• 1:44:21Speaker 01

  How have you been, sir?

• 1:44:22Speaker 02

I've been good. Yeah. Well, your question about where to where to freeze the career was interesting because I think there are parts of my career from like the 2016 15 when we're making we're making drive and we're making proving grounds. It was so fun to be on that collaborative effort with a bunch of people and getting to like do adventures and weird shit but um I wasn't driving as many things. I was like just behind Cameron behind performance the whole time and that sucked. So it's like a blend of like that stuff was great but right now I'm having more fun in a lot of ways.

• 1:44:51Speaker 01

Yeah, I for me there's probably three high watermarks or milestone moments like there was this like peak moment at zero to 60 where we had just convinced everybody to trust us. So we're like getting invited to drive cool stuff and to do cool things and from like Audi loaning us cars for like two weeks at a time to just like, you know, just gallivant across Europe in them. Um, that was an amazing era and it was like felt very DIY. And I was in my twenties and you know, it was really rad. Then there was this peak moment, you know, at Hoonigan. Where again, we were like sort of just DIY, like trying to build something. There were no rules. We're sort of inventing it as we go. That that was really, really fun.

• 1:45:32Speaker 01

And then I have to say like, right now, I feel like I'm I'm just entering this new thing that I think is really interesting. It took me, you know, I think two years from leaving Hoonigan to be like, what am I doing? You know, you don't, it's like it's a weird, it's a weird situation to build this thing for a really long time. And then decide to like hit the eject button and go do something completely different. And then realize, oh, maybe that's what I wanted to do and and kind of come back into it.

• 1:45:58Speaker 02

Did you have, did you have ideas like either while you were at Hoonigan or right after that you just kind of wrote down? You're like, oh, you know, maybe those things. Or was it totally, were you blank for a while because you were just sapped? And you wanted to just take like six months to just look at avocados?

• 1:46:13Speaker 01

Good question. So one, I think the one thing everyone just thought I retired, which is so far from the truth. I just went and did something else that just, and I was not vocal about it. So if you know, it's like, it's the, if a tree falls in the woods, it's like if a, if a YouTube influencer doesn't YouTube, do they even exist?

• 1:46:32Speaker 02

Youtuber walks in the woods, but no one's there to see him.

• 1:46:35Speaker 01

Yeah. And so I got to a point where, where like at while I was at Hoonigan, every idea was for Hoonigan. Like I never thought, I never put something to the side. Like my life was so invested in building Hoonigan and doing that, that if I had an idea, I gave it to Hoonigan. Which when I left Hoonigan, it's like, I don't have any, like, all the ideas are there, right? Like all this IP I sort of gave over to them. I then went, worked in animation, non automotive for a year during the non compete. And then when I came, you know, I think coming back into it, it was kind of nice because I had this year to like, sit there and be like, what do I really want to do? This will be something I will try to say as humbly as possible, but.

• 1:47:21Speaker 01

I got Ken, all the people I worked with and all the people I had the luxury to like call mentors, Richard Chang over the years, all these different people I worked with. They gave me this, Chris Harris too, right? Even though Chris Harris, I always joke, I was like, remember when you used to work for me?

• 1:47:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:39Speaker 01

But like, even when Chris works for you, you learn from him, right? He's one of those people. But, you know, it was this like master course on doing everything. But I was doing everything and I kind of got just good enough at about everything that I could do a lot of things. So when I came back into automotive a year ago, you know, and I came on this year's podcast then, I was like, I was literally just like, just doing whatever. And I was, I can do this, I can do this. I was like generally good at everything. But I didn't, I didn't actually ever think to myself, do I enjoy doing this? It was like, just because you can do it, doesn't mean you enjoy doing it, right? So it was like, oh, I can consult, I can help with this, I can do that. And like consulting is that, the thing that's so easy to do when you've got 20 years in the business.

• 1:48:23Speaker 01

Because you're like, yeah, I know how to do this and I can help you navigate it. But at the end of the day, I wasn't the one doing it anymore. I wasn't the one actually making it.

• 1:48:29Matt Farah?

And they don't still listen to you and you see the end product and you're like, oof, I told them to do that.

• 1:48:34Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, you're disconnected from it and all of that. So I, I think it gave me this year or two to sit there and go, fuck, what do I really enjoy doing? And actually, the moment, like that spark moment for me was on Sung Kang's film Drifter this summer. And I was like, oh, this really excites me again. It was, it was brutal, it was a lot of work. It was really difficult, we did.

• 1:48:57Matt Farah?

Which, what, what, I mean, make, was it just being on the set of, were you, what was your role in the film?

• 1:49:03Speaker 01

So I was second unit director. So I did all of the stunt and action work.

• 1:49:06Matt Farah?

  Okay, cool.

• 1:49:08Speaker 01

And I actually also got to dabble.

• 1:49:10Matt Farah?

Please describe your experience in that.

• 1:49:11Speaker 01

Yeah. It was, have you, you've had Song on this show before, do you know? Yeah, so I didn't really know Song. He was one of those people and like, I'm sure we all have this, like, we all live in Los Angeles. We all belong to this car industry slash community. And there's people that are friends of friends and then you just never meet them. Right? Like they're never, and you almost feel like you know them because you're like getting tagged in the same stuff together. And then you're talking about each other on podcasts, like, I don't actually know this person.

• 1:49:42Speaker 01

Sung decides he wants to make this movie, which was actually originally the initial D project that he was working on. And he said, you know, I really want the Jim Cramer look. Someone was like, he's like, and I've talked to a few people and they said that, you know, they can create that. Chris Marion, who's a mutual friend said, why don't you just call Scotto? Like, I'm sure he'd be happy to help. So that's what connected us, obviously. That project didn't go forward, and then he decided he wanted to make his own film, which is Drifter.

• 1:50:09Matt Farah?

I was kind of bummed when that happened. I mean, I'm sure Drifter's gonna be awesome, but I was stoked to see his interpretation of Initial D if that was going to happen.

• 1:50:18Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, a live action of that, I think, is still something that hopefully one day gets made. But, um, anyway, uh, you know, he brought me in and said, hey, we want to do all this. It was a low-budget film, um, which meant that it was really grueling, but it also meant that I got to do a lot, which I enjoy. I enjoy, like, just being able to kind of get into the stuff that normally I wouldn't have to because there'd be someone else to do it. And I got to, I got to not only direct the action and help sort of concept a lot of those scenes and how the driving was gonna be and even bring in the drivers and the cars and all that, but I got to also direct a couple of narrative moments. Got to work with Pumphrey, which was cool, because I don't know how well you guys know James, but...

• 1:50:59Matt Farah?

  A little bit.

• 1:51:00Speaker 01

I didn't know him well at all because literally he worked for, I wouldn't say Donut and Hooty were competitors, but they were, we were both big at the same time in the same space. We made different type of content, you know, for a long time. So we never really, like, we're in the same place at the same time, but everyone, I think, just assumes you know each other.

• 1:51:19Matt Farah?

That's exactly the same. I've been in the same room with that guy like two or three times, maybe, but like, I'm, we're friendly and everything, but like, everyone assumes that we know each other well and we don't.

• 1:51:29Speaker 01

So the interesting, I think he's actually a very good actor. It was really fun to work with him. Um, and he ends up playing a completely different, like, personality than I think what people were used to, to see him on Donut or now Speed, but, um, it was fun to do that and it was...

• 1:51:43Matt Farah?

  Brutal.

• 1:51:44Speaker 01

We shot in Barstow and Lancaster. Name two places that you would rather not spend time in August.

• 1:51:51Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:51Speaker 01

Right? I mean, there's like the worst place. It was miserable every day and working 15 hour days. And I just loved every minute of it. And it just brought back that, because when you stepped out, Take a Leak, we were talking about like, he brought back the conversation of like that, can you freeze a moment in your era in your career? And I was just naming the kind of the milestones. And for me, that was this moment. I was like, man, this is that energy I haven't felt in a long time. Like that get up, alarm clock goes off and you wake up because you want to start your day. Right?

• 1:52:21Matt Farah?

Like directing action sequences in films is pretty sweet.

• 1:52:24Speaker 01

  It's pretty sweet.

• 1:52:25Matt Farah?

  It's pretty sweet, man.

• 1:52:26Speaker 01

And it was also this long, you know, it was this long sort of goal for Ken and I. Ken never watched Fast and Furious, not a single one. Because he said he had no interest in watching a film where he clearly knew the driving was fake. So he just had no interest in it.

• 1:52:40Matt Farah?

  That's pretty funny.

• 1:52:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:41Matt Farah?

  I understand it.

• 1:52:43Speaker 01

Yeah, it just, he just was like, eh, it just doesn't work. I have a, my barber is, we used to be a cop. And he's like, I don't watch cop shows because it's just too fake to me. Like, that's not how police work is done.

• 1:52:54Speaker 02

And then if you're not, and if you're not watching Fast and Furious for like the cars and the driving, which is, I mean, that got me into it when I was younger. Well, then you're not really watching it for most of the action.

• 1:53:02Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:53:03Speaker 02

  The plot.

• 1:53:03Matt Farah?

  The plot.

• 1:53:04Speaker 01

At that point, you should just watch anything Jason Statham makes.

• 1:53:07Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:53:08Speaker 02

  Pretty much. Yeah, watch, watch.

• 1:53:09Matt Farah?

Transport is pretty, fairly legit, more legit. But like, I've been like, people have asked about F1, the movie, and I, I don't love it.

• 1:53:20Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:53:21Matt Farah?

Same, same kind of reason. I just like.

• 1:53:22Speaker 01

Are you a big F1 fan?

• 1:53:24Matt Farah?

No. I mean, I'm like a casual like racing fan, but like, I don't care that much about Formula One.

• 1:53:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:53:31Matt Farah?

But like, a fucking Joseph Kaczynski movie about Formula One, like, you know, okay, but like, I had problems. I had problems with it.

• 1:53:39Speaker 01

So I feel like I, for some reason, I've given this movie a pass because I think it's a great movie. I think it fills this like, big movie feel. I know that it does a lot of things that are sort of outside of. The reality of of open wheel and Formula One racing.

• 1:53:56Matt Farah?

  Well, that yeah.

• 1:53:57Speaker 01

  Work.

• 1:53:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:53:58Speaker 01

Um, I think that the action like photography in it is okay. It feels like broadcast, but that's okay. I think that's acceptable. Like they didn't need to reinvent the wheel for it. Um, I really like Brad Pitt. Like I just enjoy a good Brad Pitt film.

• 1:54:11Speaker 02

  I'm with you.

• 1:54:12Speaker 01

I think it served its purpose. Um.

• 1:54:15Speaker 02

It was, it was a good sports movie.

• 1:54:17Matt Farah?

  It's a good sport.

• 1:54:18Speaker 02

And it was, but with F1 as the sport and I watch F1 like I watch it with my wife every week. I'm not a super fan, but I'm, I mean, I pay attention.

• 1:54:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:54:26Speaker 02

And I knew like the driving was a little whatever and some of the moves like they had to do a lot of, they did a great job of exposition to, to casual fans, casual viewers of like, this rule works because the, but, but, I mean, they had a lot of different like balls they had to juggle. And, but I came out of it going, that was fun. There were a lot of really good jokes. The action was pretty good. I thought it was a solid.

• 1:54:45Speaker 01

They made a movie that services the Reddit F1, you know? It, it would, no one would have watched it except for those guys.

• 1:54:52Matt Farah?

And I'm not, and my, my criticisms with it are not with the nuanced differences from fucking racing. They're with like much bigger fucking stuff, like the fact that entire scenes are lifted wholesale from either Days of Thunder or Top Gun Maverick.

• 1:55:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:10Matt Farah?

And then just re, rearranged back and forth. The guy living in the van turns down a $50,000 watch as a prize and says, I've already got, already got a watch. And it's the watch sponsor that's paid for the movie. And, uh, you know, these type of things.

• 1:55:26Speaker 01

  Have you watched movies before?

• 1:55:28Matt Farah?

Listen, man, I don't have to like that. I don't have to like it. I, I just thought I was.

• 1:55:32Speaker 01

In the second chapter of Save the Cat, they're basically like, every movie's been made before, just make it different.

• 1:55:37Speaker 02

If you make, if you make a baseball field in a field of corn, ghosts are not showing up.

• 1:55:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:41Matt Farah?

  I don't know.

• 1:55:42Speaker 01

  Point break.

• 1:55:43Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:44Speaker 01

Fast and Furious, the first one, same movie.

• 1:55:46Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:46Speaker 01

I enjoy them both. I like Point Break better. Big shot.

• 1:55:50Matt Farah?

I mean, look, I like Days of Thunder.

• 1:55:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:52Matt Farah?

  I like Days of Thunder.

• 1:55:53Speaker 01

Are you excited that there's gonna be like a Days of Thunder F1 crossover?

• 1:55:56Matt Farah?

It's gonna be, you, they're just gonna fucking pick two and cross them. Right, yeah.

• 1:56:01Speaker 01

Did you, I mean, people were doing.

• 1:56:02Matt Farah?

  I was just with Tommy.

• 1:56:03Speaker 01

They were doing shot lifts where they were showing like scenes where he like throws her up against the wall like to kiss her or whatever and it's the exact same shot.

• 1:56:09Matt Farah?

No, that's what I'm saying. They were literally shots and scenes wholesale lifted from other movies.

• 1:56:14Speaker 01

Are they lifted or are they homages? Oh, bro.

• 1:56:17Matt Farah?

  I don't know.

• 1:56:17Speaker 01

I ask, cause like there are shots in, in the Jim Connaught film that are homage to things I've done with Ken.

• 1:56:22Matt Farah?

You can't homage yourself. Let me just say, you cannot homage.

• 1:56:27Speaker 01

  That's a reference?

• 1:56:28Matt Farah?

No, fucking Kozinski, as good as he is, cannot, you can't homage Top Gun Maverick in your racing movie. Sorry.

• 1:56:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, alright.

• 1:56:36Speaker 02

I think it's a good point. But I think the pressing, you know, girl up against the wall is like a cliched shot that probably began long before that.

• 1:56:42Matt Farah?

No, but there's like a dozen shots that are lifted wholesale from these movies.

• 1:56:46Speaker 01

Someone did a reel and it's like boom, boom, boom, boom. But it's Days of Thunder, it's like boom, boom, boom, boom.

• 1:56:50Matt Farah?

There are a lot are stolen directly from one of those two movies, directly. And I was with Tommy Kendall and I love Days of Thunder, by the way. I was with Tommy last weekend.

• 1:56:58Speaker 01

  Who I love.

• 1:56:58Matt Farah?

  Who I love.

• 1:56:59Speaker 01

Is he still driving his chicken car?

• 1:57:00Matt Farah?

Oh, yeah. We, we fucking won this together last weekend. I'm so excited for this, for us. He won his first race in 11 years with that fucking trophy. But he, we were talking about this, we had dinner. And I was, and he was talking about Days of Thunder, cause he was a fucking big name of the day. He talked, he was talking, he was hanging out with Tom Cruise when they were making Days of Thunder. He was like helping with that shit. And I was like, what do you think is the most realistic part of Days of Thunder? And he says, the part where they're racing the rental cars is fucking spot on. Everything else is bullshit.

• 1:57:34Speaker 01

Love it. Sounds about right. Yeah. But back to that point, Ken and I always had this thought of like. It would be really cool to influence car chases and action stuff in car movies to make it feel more real. Right? Like, why not? Like, they actually have the budgets to go do this stuff. How is it that we do it in these like little internet films? Right. But they can't do it in some of these bigger pictures. And they go, you know, now it's all CG, or it's just sort of like these faked moments that don't feel practical anymore and all that. So getting a chance to dabble in that with Sung was really cool. I've got another project I can't talk about for, that's coming up in 26, and hopefully I get to do that again.

• 1:58:17Speaker 01

I've like started writing scripts and screenplays on some ideas and, you know, I, it's weird. I, it's like I woke up one day and was like, yeah, this is what I always wanted to do. I might as well go do it. And like make car movies. You go do, you know, go make a, throw at it for two years and hey, maybe it won't work and maybe it doesn't ever deliver for me, but I don't know. I feel like there's, I feel like there's this want right now where people want things to feel real again. Like, I think AI has really, like, the AI slop has really brought an audience to say, I either want this to be tangible, or I want to know that this happened. Like, so for example, you guys probably know about like the Apple opening logo. Have you guys seen that? Hmm. So Apple just redid their opening logo for Apple TV. Oh, okay.

• 1:59:01Speaker 01

And they shot it practically. It's pieces of glass that they actually shot this whole thing. And it's like, so if you're watching like Pyrobus or anything like that, like that's the new logo that comes up. And it kind of became this like mini viral moment in sort of probably the design world of like, hey, we went and actually really did this and like really doing it. It's cool. Look. I, you know, I don't want to speak badly of Tom Cruise because maybe one day I get to work with him, but like, Tom Cruise is an interesting person. What's really interesting about him is that he's at the age he's at and he still tries to do all the stuff. Oh, for sure. That, for me, makes Mission Impossible.

• 1:59:36Matt Farah?

He fucking bought the whole franchise just so he could do that.

• 1:59:39Speaker 01

It makes me enjoy the movies more. I don't know, knowing that he did this makes me enjoy the movie more. It feels like it comes across. And while he may have the exact same performance over, and you could say whatever you want about his acting, he brings something to those films. When I'm watching the biplanes do that, and I see him, I'm like, I know he's probably really doing that. I don't know what it is. It brings me in it more. But for car action, I got, the minute we go into car action and I watch something, I'm like, they cut there to do that. That's not real. Like, I can tell that what's happening outside the windows at a different speed. Like, all these little things. And I'm obviously super attuned to those things, but I think just in general, people realize that it's not real.

• 2:00:22Speaker 02

I think subconsciously they do. And I'm sure movies have, I mean, they have a budget, right? They have a budget of time, and they have a budget of money of like, how much time can we put into this car chase versus the bank heist scene? Versus the romance scene or whatever. So they go, well, is this a car movie? Or how important is the car element to this film? Like, what was the movie with Kevin Spacey and the kid? Baby Driver?

• 2:00:44Speaker 01

  Baby Driver, fantastic.

• 2:00:45Speaker 02

Fantastic. Because they were like, this is pretty much a car movie with, or like half car, half robbery.

• 2:00:50Speaker 01

I can't tell you how it ends, but I could probably go scene for scene on how it starts.

• 2:00:54Speaker 02

  Totally agree with you.

• 2:00:55Speaker 01

Because I thought that the car stuff really stood out. Edgar Wright, I think, is great. And what he does, I think that that whole scene was fantastic. I've worked with the stunt coordinator who did that and who did the driving. And that is the one real exception to me of like, okay, this is good. Like, I watched this and it gets me really excited. But for me, and the reason I own the car I came here today in my D2S8 is because the movie Ronin was that for me as a kid. Like, that was just, it was practical. Frank Comeau wanted to do this. And I think we've had this conversation before.

• 2:01:28Speaker 02

All you can do is practical, pretty much.

• 2:01:29Speaker 01

Yeah, no, but they were starting to shift off. I mean,

• 2:01:32Matt Farah?

Jurassic Park was the first, like, sort of believable CG, and that was 92.

• 2:01:37Speaker 02

But there was a lot less dynamic, you know? Like, those are like, the drifts are trying to stay still and move.

• 2:01:41Speaker 01

But there's also just the, there's the CG side of it. Like, put a car in a volume, create an entire. ...background. There's a video out there where there's a car in the volume, it's not moving, and they make it look like it falls down a cliff, right? And the volume is an LCD screen that wraps the car, so you can create this world. And you watch it, and you're like, "Yeah, it actually kind of feels like a car's going down." You do realize it's fake, but it's sort of there. But back in the day, they kind of created this language of camera work where it's like, "Tight shot, this, that," where it's like abstract, so you never get to feel it.

• 2:02:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:13Speaker 01

You just see this. And I keep joking that I want to cut a football game this way and see if people enjoy it. Because you'd be like, "That's not fun." That's like a sizzle for, "I'm about to watch the Jets get demolished."

• 2:02:24Matt Farah?

  Right.

• 2:02:24Speaker 01

That's like the sizzle for that. But like, watching the Jets fumble, you know, where you see the whole story, is the storytelling. And I think that a lot of people have lost storytelling in car chases. They just go for hype reel. Totally agree.

• 2:02:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:39Speaker 01

Yeah. So anyway, I would love to fix that. That's what I want to try to push into, so yeah, I don't know.

• 2:02:44Matt Farah?

Like cliche with the Italian job, like the Mark Wahlberg one.

• 2:02:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:02:48Matt Farah?

They do a pretty good job.

• 2:02:50Speaker 01

I think that has some really good moments in it.

• 2:02:52Matt Farah?

Wide shots where you can see more of what's going on, and the car's more in like a context.

• 2:02:57Speaker 01

I think some of the Bourne series has some good moments in it. Mission Impossible has some moments. The Bond series has some moments, yeah. But there's also just, I think we're moving further and further away. We're all talking about movies that maybe feel newer to us, but have been out for a decade.

• 2:03:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that's true.

• 2:03:14Speaker 01

So, yeah, so anyway, that's like, that would be a cool thing to go do. Yeah, I don't know, otherwise.

• 2:03:21Speaker 01

Yeah, you know, it's like, I just really enjoy that. I enjoy the storytelling side of it. That's cool, so. It seems like you've got the ingredients, the skill set and stuff. It makes a lot of sense. Yeah, we'll see. Wish you luck. If not, I'd always fall back on this gift to Gab.

• 2:03:34Matt Farah?

Are you just hoping someone calls you and asks you to do that gig?

• 2:03:37Speaker 01

Um, right now, I'm hoping that someone's listening to this podcast and they give me a shout. Uh, no, I don't have an agent yet. Obviously, the Sung thing kind of came through word of mouth in doing that. Um, and then another job came out of word of mouth of doing that. And really for like January and February, my plans to kind of get my ducks in a row and kind of go have those conversations with the right people. You know, I don't know. I don't know how much you've dealt with Hollywood stuff, but it's an interesting space.

• 2:04:01Matt Farah?

  Yeah, minimally.

• 2:04:03Speaker 01

  So you obviously have...

• 2:04:03Matt Farah?

  Didn't have the look.

• 2:04:05Speaker 01

Yeah, I'm happy to be behind camera. I like, I enjoy, I enjoy that place, but uh, yeah, I don't know, it's a, it's an interesting world. It's a lot of people have been like, you're running in a door that people are running out of right now. Right? Like, sure. But at the same time, like, I feel like I've done that before, so.

• 2:04:21Matt Farah?

He, I mean, yeah, but also like, as opposed to what, running into YouTube? It's like, same, same fucking story there, man. Like, you know, don't want to tell you about YouTube, but like, it's not great over there.

• 2:04:33Speaker 01

No, no. YouTube was, I mean, great and was amazing for years. And I think gave, oh shit, everyone who's sitting at this table a career on some levels. Um, but it's at, it's at a weird moment now and it's definitely super saturated. And I think it's created a lot of opportunity for, for a new audience that's coming in now, but I, it, you get to a growth moment where you're like, how do I keep making this work? Like, how does this, how does this keep going? Which is, I don't know, it's interesting of where people go from there. So I've had this conversation with multiple people. It's like, okay, you've done this, you've done this now, you're on year five. Like, there were, you have diminishing returns on everything you upload. You make, like, all of it's not working. But.

• 2:05:17Matt Farah?

  Westside Collector Car Storage.

• 2:05:19Speaker 01

  Yeah. No, well.

• 2:05:20Matt Farah?

Right. Two locations in Los Angeles.

• 2:05:22Speaker 01

Look, the business model that I think where Hunnigan made the mistake was it, when, when the content was doing so well, we put all the chips in on content. Not realizing that it was the other pieces of the business that would keep us like afloat during bad times. Um, apparel business, event business, all of that. But I think you look at the younger YouTubers and they're maybe not even that young anymore, but the Adam LZs, the, you know, the Cletuses, um, the Westens, like, these guys have multiple business models. They have like nineteen verticals to keep, like, they've got, you know, they've got product, but they have an event, they've got a pay-per-view side of it. They're doing all these different things because the one thing isn't enough in.

• 2:06:00Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:06:00Speaker 01

Right? And like, there's so much on YouTube that like, you can find something that's like very specific to your liking. It's like, hey, you're really into, you know. Audi D8s, you know, Audi D2S8s, like there's guys who just, that's all they do, it's all they make, right? And so I think it's a, it's an interesting world. But also no one I think has figured out really how to cross, especially in the automotive space, like how to cross over. Cause even outside of automotive. Throttle house guys do with, with TV. What do you think about, what do you think about that? Do you know those guys? Yeah, they're lovely. Yeah. They're, and they're smart. I don't know the third guy at all. He's like the train. The train guy. Yeah. And apparently he's not actually that weird and that's kind of a, sort of a shtick. Right.

• 2:06:45Speaker 01

I mean, it's real, but at least, but it's an exaggeration. Right, right. But like, alright, but I, but that's his, but that's the thing I know about him, so I don't fucking know. Like his POV is always that like GoPro head now, like it's that fucking. Really fucking wide angle, like strange looking, but. When they announced the grand, the grand tour, you know, the three amigos were leaving. A bunch of people were like, man, you, Vinny and Ron should go do it. And like after being friends with Chris Harris, I was like, I want nothing to do. Yeah. With being anywhere near anything those guys have touched. Like you do not want to follow them in on anything. Like that is just not a place you want to be. No, exactly.

• 2:07:27Speaker 01

They have Mandingo power when it comes to, when it comes to contact. That's so fucking funny. It's like they are, they are on a whole other level. And I've gotten to watch those men work around in a writer's room. And you're like, yep, this is why you're good at it. Cause they have real chemistry, they really know what they're doing. And it works and they have good people around them too. But yeah, it's, it's scary to kind of follow that. Yeah, I know, I mean Harris is like as good as it gets when it comes to doing that thing. And still an impossible task. I mean Harris is like sort of the, the full package and. Yeah. Obviously a friend pick him up, but like he drives better than all of us. Oh, he's so good. He drives better than all of them. Yeah, he's, he's fast, he's proper fast.

• 2:08:11Speaker 01

Like he's not, like you and I were journalists fast. Yeah, no, he's fast, he's race car driver fast. He's race car driver fast. And he's also like Formula D sideways. Right, right. He can also slide a car with the best of them.

• 2:08:22Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:22Speaker 01

And he can like articulate and say all this great stuff while doing it in like this great way, which is fantastic. And he's smart.

• 2:08:30Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:30Speaker 01

And I don't think you often get that.

• 2:08:33Matt Farah?

But still an impossible task to take over the show, a show with the name Top Gear. Like, nobody can do it.

• 2:08:39Speaker 01

If they were smart, I think you start a whole new show and it's like brought to you by Top Gear.

• 2:08:43Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:43Speaker 01

It's the ballerina of John Wick.

• 2:08:45Speaker 02

I think they also just, trying to relaunch it, they were stuck because it's like the runways got shorter for media now. You know, like Top Gear had, I mean, what, it was on for like 10 years before the 2000s when it started to hit viral status.

• 2:08:58Matt Farah?

Yeah, they had the privilege of just being the BBC two, like quiet, you know.

• 2:09:04Speaker 02

Television giving them time. And now it's like, if it's not getting record views or record, you know, response really quick, they shutter it. I thought Harris and Matt LeBlanc and Roy Reid were like so strong together. And if they had just let the audience kind of, you know, accept that the baton had been passed and then just judge those guys on like their actual merit, I think it probably could have, you know, turned the corner and gone back up. But everyone was just like, nope, it's gotta just do it real quick.

• 2:09:28Matt Farah?

No, those guys made a good show. Like, they did make a good show. It's just like, how do you crawl out from that shadow? Like, just like not fucking possible.

• 2:09:36Speaker 01

Yeah. And they also, you know, it's a chemistry show and the original cast had years to develop that.

• 2:09:45Speaker 02

  Twenty years. Very true.

• 2:09:45Speaker 01

Right? Like, they were able to develop and they kind of knew each other from, from the journalist runs a little bit anyway. They built on it. So, yeah. I don't know. Do you think, do you think a show like that can exist anymore? Or do you think we're past that? Like, I want that show. I want another one of those shows. But we all know that if that show comes out, everyone's gonna talk shit on it, like including like ourselves.

• 2:10:07Speaker 02

I think the only thing it can offer that you can't truly find on YouTube these days is like the big landscape, you know, adventure across the country that's shot perfectly. Because people can go do like the Mongolian Rally themselves. And there's plenty of videos on YouTube of people doing it. But it'll be shot on like a drone and some GoPros and whatever. But, and you can get the car view content, Kamisa or Throttle How. Like a number of people do the high level writing and pretty strong shooting and capture of those moments and like the action. But you don't get the big scape stuff or like, you know, building their own RVs like they did on Top Gear that they drove down the road. Like you don't get those big stunts and things.

• 2:10:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:10:46Speaker 02

With the refined jokes and the refined writing, but that I don't think that's easy to find.

• 2:10:52Speaker 01

But that's the stuff I love.

• 2:10:53Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:53Speaker 01

I mean, and I actually think that right now, whether it's the algorithm or whatever it is, like YouTube is crushing the creative curve. Right. The every, the more formulaic it is, the better. Even when we were talking earlier about like the cadence of a podcast, like I have this other show idea that I want to do because it's like a solid one hour. And I just know it'll do better. Like it's, it's formulaic. You're going to get the same thing every time. It's going to have a payoff at the end and it's, I just know from everything I know from YouTube that like that will work better. But you know, it then will be limited because it'll always just be that show.

• 2:11:31Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:11:31Speaker 01

And that's what YouTube wants. He wants you to upload the exact same thing.

• 2:11:34Matt Farah?

Same thing, seven days a week, whatever.

• 2:11:36Speaker 01

Right. And then the more people who make stuff like that, the more that you end up in the same sort of delivery or feed group as them. And now they know how to, what your audience looks like and it becomes more understandable for them. If, if the three of us right now, we sat there and we said, let's, let's put together the crack team of people to go and create an amazing adventure. And we put a ton of money behind it and we went and did it. There's a chance it fails.

• 2:12:01Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:12:01Speaker 01

On YouTube, which is crazy because it could be very good, but there, it just doesn't fit in anymore.

• 2:12:08Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:12:08Speaker 01

What, what made YouTube amazing, when you guys had the, the success with Drive, when I had the success with the original Jim Conna films with Ken. And then later on, even some of the success with Hoonigan was that it was still the wild, wild west. You could make anything and if it was good, it would kind of float to the top.

• 2:12:26Matt Farah?

Yeah. And also the world wasn't streaming everything anyway. Like on Apple TV, like the YouTube app and the Netflix app are like not that different.

• 2:12:36Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:12:37Matt Farah?

And they both feed you shit like in the same. Way.

• 2:12:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:12:41Matt Farah?

And so, but 15 years ago, like Netflix was fucking DVDs in the mail, bro. Like it wasn't streaming like that. So, so like they were distinctly different things. And now they're kinda like the same thing.

• 2:12:55Speaker 01

But I would kill for another really good adventure show. Like I think automotive adventure stuff. Like I don't know if I need another car review show, right? I think to me, there's enough stuff out there that's servicing well on YouTube that delivers that. But the adventure thing is where the production costs and that like being able to tell that, right? I mean, you looked at some of the later grand tour when they were only doing those travel.

• 2:13:20Matt Farah?

You know, they abandoned the studio.

• 2:13:21Speaker 01

I would get, it would be exciting when one would come up. And one, it's like feature length. And it's like they were still something that was like really, really enjoyable to go sit down and, and watch. And I didn't watch the rest of what they did with that, but I would still watch those. And I, and the last one, I think was probably a little bit too scripted.

• 2:13:41Matt Farah?

The last one was very forced.

• 2:13:43Speaker 01

It felt like they didn't want to be there.

• 2:13:44Matt Farah?

  Yeah. Oh, the, the one.

• 2:13:45Speaker 01

Whatever it was. I don't, whatever the last. Across the desert, uh.

• 2:13:49Matt Farah?

No, the very, very last one I thought was really good. The one before that was the winter one where it was super scripted.

• 2:13:56Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Where they crash in the tunnel.

• 2:13:59Matt Farah?

  Yes.

• 2:13:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, that one felt.

• 2:14:00Matt Farah?

That one was hokey, although James really did fucking hurt himself.

• 2:14:03Speaker 01

  I'm sure he did.

• 2:14:03Matt Farah?

But the one for the road, the very last one in Botswana was beautiful. That was really good.

• 2:14:08Speaker 01

Where they go back to like the original location. They find, yeah.

• 2:14:12Matt Farah?

  That was really beautiful.

• 2:14:13Speaker 01

That was fantastic. And like, I would love for more of that programming. And I just don't think that YouTube is the platform for that. I don't think it's, it's not worth the investment for what you're gonna get out of it. Like the formula is what works on YouTube. Make that for that.

• 2:14:26Matt Farah?

Well, dude, this is cause like, you and I and people our age. When it was television or even cable television, if you liked a show, Seinfeld, whatever the fuck, you'd watch the new episode of Seinfeld.

• 2:14:40Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:14:40Matt Farah?

You wouldn't see on the guide, it would say, "Seinfeld, the Chinese restaurant," and you would go, "Well, I don't like Chinese food, so I'm not gonna watch this episode of Seinfeld."

• 2:14:48Speaker 01

I don't like that thumbnail. I'm not clicking it.

• 2:14:50Matt Farah?

Exactly. But YouTube has that problem where they don't, it's not like, "Hey, guys, this is the fucking movie from this thing. This is like a real big, it's just, it's positioned right next to, Guy reacts to fucking Trump saying something shitty."

• 2:15:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:15:06Matt Farah?

  You know, or whatever.

• 2:15:07Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:15:08Speaker 02

That's the other problem is that while you're watching a YouTube video, unless you go full theater mode, you're being offered other things. So if there's a lull in that, in like, in the show you're watching, a lot of people's brains will go, "Mm, okay, what's over here? Like, what shiny thing?" So I like the Grand Tour and shows like that, because you have to go to Amazon, you put it on, and I don't think it's showing you other thumbnails next to the thing you're watching.

• 2:15:29Speaker 01

Another thing too in that, and like, I realize I created, started this problem, but there's something about not seeing the view count next to something, because I'll see something, and part of what will make me decide whether I'm gonna wanna watch it is, how long ago was it uploaded and what are the views? Because if it doesn't have enough views, I'm like, "Oh, I guess it's not good," and that's not actually true.

• 2:15:49Matt Farah?

  Not at all.

• 2:15:50Speaker 01

I have definitely watched things that have 7,000 views, and I'm like, "This is really good. Why isn't anyone watching this?" Like, it just didn't, it just didn't break through. That's sort of, you still get that on Amazon. Like, you can watch something, and you're not like, you're not prejudging it or biased to it, because you're like, "Oh, this hasn't done well."

• 2:16:07Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 2:16:07Speaker 01

Where on the flip side, there are things you're like, "Oh, it has 10 million views. I guess I have to watch it," and you're like, "Oh, it's just a really good thumbnail."

• 2:16:12Speaker 02

Sometimes the empty restaurant is amazing.

• 2:16:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah, I know.

• 2:16:15Speaker 02

  People don't know.

• 2:16:15Matt Farah?

It goes, it does go both directions.

• 2:16:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:17Matt Farah?

Right? It's the great equalizer for both ways.

• 2:16:21Speaker 01

It's, it's both great and bad all at the same time, which is, you know, true, I guess.

• 2:16:25Matt Farah?

I just like, well, podcasting is, is less algorithmic than that. If someone subscribes to your show on whatever, Apple Podcasts or whatever the fuck.

• 2:16:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:34Matt Farah?

  They get it.

• 2:16:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:35Matt Farah?

It's not just like, "Hey, by the way, you haven't listened to this in a couple of weeks, but like, here's a bunch of things that are like, kinda like that, but not, not the one you..."

• 2:16:42Speaker 01

You know, anyway. But at the same time, getting traction in podcasting, I think is really difficult. Like, you guys probably forget, because you were there early.

• 2:16:49Matt Farah?

  No, for sure.

• 2:16:50Speaker 01

But I look at what the viewership is on YouTube and what the actual downloads are, and it's like... Man, if I would have only, if I didn't have YouTube like this, you know, very few people would have listened to this, right? And but then the second episode comes out and you're like, oh, they're all here again because they're already getting it because they've got it in their app and it's set to download. But like, you know, there's a nice side to the algorithm.

• 2:17:11Matt Farah?

It took us years, man, a couple of years to fucking really, really do it. It's, it was a slog.

• 2:17:18Speaker 01

Are you guys still number one or you're like fighting with other people?

• 2:17:20Matt Farah?

It depends on the day of the week. Like the ranking is like real time. So like if we put up an episode like six hours later, we're number one. And then like three days later, we're down to number five. And whoever put up an episode that day could be number one.

• 2:17:36Speaker 01

  Right, right.

• 2:17:36Matt Farah?

So like it's, you know, we're, we're up there.

• 2:17:39Speaker 01

How many years is it now?

• 2:17:41Matt Farah?

We started in 2012, January. Yeah.

• 2:17:43Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:17:43Matt Farah?

  Yep, 13.

• 2:17:44Speaker 01

You guys were like early, early to it. Is it crazy now where you're like, all these other shitheads are doing podcasts? You're like, we were the fucking originators?

• 2:17:51Matt Farah?

I mean, it's nice that like we have been here long enough that we don't have to think about how to grow a podcast now.

• 2:17:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:17:58Matt Farah?

I mean, that's nice, but like, yeah, I mean, it's, it's, this is a great thing to be doing for a living. So I'm glad it's still working on like YouTube, which is not. So like, we could keep doing this, this is fine.

• 2:18:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:18:12Matt Farah?

This is all right, I'm down.

• 2:18:14Speaker 01

  Do you consume podcasts?

• 2:18:15Matt Farah?

Yes, but not ones about cars.

• 2:18:17Speaker 01

  Me neither.

• 2:18:18Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:18:18Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:18:19Matt Farah?

Comedy, history. I listen to podcasts about terrible people.

• 2:18:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, same here.

• 2:18:24Matt Farah?

  The bastards, the dollop.

• 2:18:25Speaker 01

Yep, yep, yep. Um, I listen to, I used to listen to a lot of true crime. That's kind of like what got me in. I, I definitely came with the cereal bunch. Like, sure, I entered podcasting for the original cereal. That's what got me in. Uh, I listened to political stuff, which I shouldn't. I actually have stopped. I realized at a certain point I, I was like, and I've replaced that with listening to podcasts about movies. It's like the rewatchables is fantastic.

• 2:18:47Matt Farah?

That's a good one, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:18:48Speaker 01

Um, what went wrong is another really good one.

• 2:18:51Matt Farah?

  That's a good one.

• 2:18:51Speaker 01

Um, and then, um, and then I had like business podcasts and things like that. Like Guy Raz is like how I built this is like a forever standard like works. Um, yeah, uh, but I, podcast is probably like 90% of my content intake. I just don't have time to always.

• 2:19:07Matt Farah?

Yeah, but you're in the car a lot and.

• 2:19:09Speaker 01

In the car a lot, or I just like, I'm going to work on my car and just throw the AirPods in and listen to a podcast.

• 2:19:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:19:14Speaker 01

So, which is, I realize I'm now. Like, listening to talk radio. Like, I, yeah, that, cause I remember like walking in at my like friend dad's house and he'd be like, listen and do you listen to talk radio?

• 2:19:25Matt Farah?

  Rush Limbaugh?

• 2:19:26Speaker 01

No, he'd actually listen to Car Talk.

• 2:19:28Matt Farah?

  Oh, alright, yeah.

• 2:19:28Speaker 01

The weird thing is, is he wasn't even into cars. But he would just listen to Car Talk, cause he just enjoyed the stories.

• 2:19:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:19:34Speaker 01

Alright, I'm like, what are you listening to?

• 2:19:36Matt Farah?

There's a lot of people like that, that really liked Car Talk. Even though they just didn't know the first fucking thing about cars.

• 2:19:41Speaker 01

  It was entertaining, yeah.

• 2:19:42Speaker 02

And it always sounded so friendly. Those guys sounded so helpful to anyone. You know, you could walk up and be like, "My dog is limping," and they'd probably know how to fix it, and they'd help. That's the vibe. It was just chicken soup.

• 2:19:52Speaker 01

Yeah, I mean, those guys are really the OGs.

• 2:19:54Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:19:55Speaker 01

They paved, you know, they walked or they crawled so we could run, kinda thing.

• 2:19:59Speaker 02

They had the, they had the number one car podcast for a long time because their catalog got uploaded. And they had, you know, fifty thousand episodes, and they were popular, and, you know, they just dunked on everybody.

• 2:20:08Matt Farah?

Yeah, it took the pandemic for them to finally get fucking.

• 2:20:12Speaker 01

You guys are looking at your numbers, and you're like, "A fucking ghost in the machine is beating us."

• 2:20:16Matt Farah?

For real, we could never be number one, for years.

• 2:20:19Speaker 02

And, and V, remember VOD cars? Like, that old, they uploaded everything to podcast platforms, so they, for years, were number one because they had so much content. And they just, for whatever reason, the algorithm went, "Oh, you have a new thing every single day." And it's about cars, and there's audio, so you're number one. But it wasn't a podcast, it was weird.

• 2:20:36Matt Farah?

Yeah, gaming the system, gaming the system.

• 2:20:39Speaker 01

I feel like I need to have you guys on my podcast, but it's probably weird, cause like, we're gonna have the same conversation, just on a different channel. But, I'll bring you on for one of the more structured show ideas.

• 2:20:47Matt Farah?

  Sure, yeah, that's better.

• 2:20:49Speaker 01

Yeah, I've got it, I've got one that's like a, it's like creating a list show.

• 2:20:52Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 2:20:52Speaker 01

  It's called Firing Order.

• 2:20:54Matt Farah?

  That's a good name.

• 2:20:55Speaker 01

And the group that keeps coming in is called the Rotating Assembly.

• 2:20:59Matt Farah?

  That's pretty good.

• 2:21:00Speaker 01

  As a, as a writer.

• 2:21:01Speaker 02

  You know what you're doing.

• 2:21:02Speaker 01

  I enjoyed that one.

• 2:21:02Matt Farah?

  This is pretty good.

• 2:21:03Speaker 01

The idea is, is we walk in with a question, and we leave with a list. And we have to, we have to get it.

• 2:21:08Matt Farah?

  Each contestant is a.

• 2:21:09Speaker 01

We did it a lot, and we had that one.

• 2:21:10Matt Farah?

Cylinder heads, just me and my cylinder heads?

• 2:21:13Speaker 01

We could, we could stop with, with, we could stop with Rotating Assembly and just move on from there.

• 2:21:19Speaker 02

Somewhere in your house, there's a paper with like 50 other names crossed out. So you went through all of them, I guess.

• 2:21:23Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:21:23Speaker 01

I am so into a good name that I will think of a name and then build an idea around it.

• 2:21:30Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:21:30Speaker 01

  Right? Where I'm like.

• 2:21:31Matt Farah?

Rotating Assembly is like really good. It says like, it's a full-on two-word double entendre.

• 2:21:36Speaker 01

Yeah, and the idea there is like, hey, I'm gonna bring in these three people and we're gonna go through like these couple of topics. This is the rotating assembly for this like mini-season and we're gonna talk about a bunch of stuff. And it could be something as simple as like, you know, greatest, greatest, you know, three Canyon cars for under 10 grand. Greatest Formula One driver of all time. Like, you could kind of create whatever, greatest action scene in a movie. You know, it's anything and then it's, you just have to fight about it.

• 2:22:02Matt Farah?

This sounds like a show I was just on called Zach Klapman's Driver's Test.

• 2:22:07Speaker 02

  Thank you for the plug.

• 2:22:08Speaker 01

  Nice, nice, nice.

• 2:22:09Speaker 02

  That was very nice.

• 2:22:09Speaker 01

I haven't actually, I've gotten, this is one of those things where I see it on the grams and I'm like, I gotta like put it in a bookmark to it.

• 2:22:15Speaker 02

It'll be that show where it has 7,000 views where you're like, oh, this is kind of good.

• 2:22:21Speaker 01

You know, that's how it works.

• 2:22:22Speaker 02

That's why I'm having a lot of fun doing it.

• 2:22:25Speaker 01

I seen you have like Lieberman on.

• 2:22:27Speaker 02

I had him, Lieberman, Musto, and Misha Mansour.

• 2:22:29Speaker 01

  You had Larry Chen.

• 2:22:30Speaker 02

We did Larry Chen with Corey Burns and Glucker and Vinnie Russo. Lynn Woodward, Mike Danger against Emmy Hall and Matt Hardigree. And the first one was Alana Sher.

• 2:22:43Speaker 01

And you guys do like, it's like, it's like game show-y in a way.

• 2:22:46Speaker 02

Do you watch, do you know Dropout TV at all? Or do you ever watch any British panel shows? Which are just excuses for comedians to sit and like make fun of each other.

• 2:22:53Speaker 01

  Okay, yeah.

• 2:22:54Speaker 02

So I was watching that and like these game shows that are very improv-based. And I went, oh, that'd be fun for car stuff. So there's some questions that have real answers. Two-thirds of the questions is like, just argue your opinion and make it funny. And then, and I give out how many points I decide you're worth, basically.

• 2:23:09Speaker 01

  Oh, nice, nice, nice.

• 2:23:10Speaker 02

So it's just, people are arguing.

• 2:23:11Speaker 01

Arbitrary points are the best thing ever. We were big, Hoonigan was big on arbitrary points and ridiculous numbers. Like, that's 1.6 million points moving forward. Okay, you get three points. You're like, how am I gonna catch up? Don't worry, there's the super round.

• 2:23:25Matt Farah?

That's literally how all reality game shows are done, by the way.

• 2:23:29Speaker 01

  Just enjoy it.

• 2:23:30Matt Farah?

Yeah, it was fun and made up. I got, I won a lot of made up points.

• 2:23:35Speaker 01

Yep, great. Did you win anything else?

• 2:23:37Matt Farah?

Most of my points were made up points. You won a lot of Starburst. I won about seventeen Starburst, pink and red, and it was fucking great evening.

• 2:23:45Speaker 01

  Great evening.

• 2:23:46Matt Farah?

  It's a good time.

• 2:23:47Speaker 01

Hell yeah, hell yeah. What else, uh, what else is new for you, boys?

• 2:23:51Matt Farah?

Nothing. When you get to that point, that's when you end the show.

• 2:23:54Speaker 01

  Oh, we're done?

• 2:23:55Matt Farah?

Well, when you say, when you say what else is new for you, boys.

• 2:23:58Speaker 01

  I can talk for hours.

• 2:24:00Matt Farah?

  I know you can.

• 2:24:00Speaker 01

  But at the same time.

• 2:24:01Matt Farah?

  Doesn't mean we have to.

• 2:24:02Speaker 01

Doesn't mean we have to. And like, and the record's the record. Where are we at right now in time?

• 2:24:05Matt Farah?

  Two hours and eleven minutes.

• 2:24:06Speaker 01

Holy shit, I thought we were only like an hour. This is the problem, because I have.

• 2:24:09Matt Farah?

  Two hours and eleven minutes.

• 2:24:10Speaker 01

You have ADHD? Have we talked about this before?

• 2:24:12Matt Farah?

  I do.

• 2:24:12Speaker 01

  You do?

• 2:24:13Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:24:13Speaker 01

So, and I've spent like, I could do a whole podcast just on ADHD now, because I've like, I decided I was gonna just really educate myself about neurodivergence and like really dive into it and like better understand it and I didn't want to medicate myself, so I wanted to like figure out other ways to like deal with it. And one of the things is that people with ADHD do not have the concept of time. And the best way to explain it is there's only two things. There's now and not now.

• 2:24:39Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:24:41Speaker 01

Like, if you want me to do something right now, I can do it.

• 2:24:43Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:24:44Speaker 01

Not now could be in five minutes or in five years from now. My coupe quattro unfortunately lives in not now.

• 2:24:50Matt Farah?

I think you've just described Vinny Russo also. Oh, a hundred percent, yeah.

• 2:24:54Speaker 01

Yeah, Vinny and I's conversations are all over the place.

• 2:24:56Matt Farah?

Yeah, Vinny has those two speeds. Now and well, maybe eventually, but probably not. He also has it. Let's see, uh, go to the Patreon. We're gonna do just a few. Uh, and I'm gonna pick which ones they are from the Patreon and you can get in on the action by joining patreon.com/thesmokeentirepodcast. You can ask questions for the show, watch the live stream, get the show early, get more show, get the show without ads and all these other things. Uh, Metallica's In Your Oil Pan says, uh, "If you were to go back and start hoonigan with the knowledge you have today, would you do anything different or do it all the same?" That's a good question.

• 2:25:35Speaker 01

Uh, it's a good one. I'm like now two years removed from leaving and I think I was a bit more like sour about things when I left. But like now the time has passed. I, I, it's just like any kind of relationship. Like you, if you're a good person, you remember the good moments. So like, and we had a really, really good time. Like it was great. We learned a lot of stuff. So I would be afraid to adjust any of that and have this butterfly effect. That all of a sudden it doesn't become the same thing. Um, but if I was to do it over again and, and have more control in the way I did it my own way. I think that the reality is, is like, we had to realize that once we started growing personalities, that these people are going to want to go do their own thing.

• 2:26:16Speaker 01

And I think a collective of everybody doing their own thing, but together as one would have been a better model forward. And whether that was like a shared equity with everybody or just a way, um, a way to like make it so that people could build something that was their own. That they could take with them kind of thing. Because I think at a certain point, everyone was like, I want to go do this on my, by myself. And I, of all people, wanted that in my own. Like I finally got to do my own thing and I couldn't, I couldn't fault someone else for wanting to go build their own thing too. Part of what made Hooning great was a lot of these guys had their own minds. You look at Vinny, he went to go build his thing. Hertz doing his own thing. All these guys are doing their own thing now, every one of them. And that I think is something that having the hindsight there is like,

• 2:27:01Speaker 01

if we could have figured out a better strategy where. Could have been like a talent incubator for those kinds of folks. Or like a joint, like a, like a, um, a joint venture type situation where you're like, hey, you want to go do this thing? Let us support you in the early phases of it. Let's figure out a way that we can work together on it. We'll help fund it. We'll help build it. But in the end, you get to leave with it, right? And like, maybe there's some, something there. Cause then I think everyone would have had a little bit more focus on what they want to do. And it would have allowed us to be, to extend and be broader. Cause you could, like Hurt could just go do the grassroots drifting stuff and really live in that space. And not have to also service wanting, like me wanting to go do stuff in muscle cars, right? Like we could have lived in a different world. And I think that that's actually.

• 2:27:45Speaker 01

See what fits better today. That being said, I didn't know any of that. Of course.

• 2:27:49Matt Farah?

Well, that's why it be what it be BMW I8 D's nuts. What would you have realistically done if the Subaru had drifted into the water? And or into the powerboat off the pier in the most recent video? Is there a backup car or backup plan?

• 2:28:08Speaker 01

Uh, there was uh, no backup car. So if it sank, it was over. Um, luckily that was the last shot, so we would have just called a rap a little earlier and started the rap party. Um, I will say.

• 2:28:20Matt Farah?

If the car went in the water, would you have left it in the video?

• 2:28:24Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, we probably would have just been the end sequence, right? So Travis crossed over first and then Jim York did it in the outback afterwards. Cause we wanted to prove that the water was deep.

• 2:28:34Matt Farah?

Oh, no, I was talking about off the barge. When he was, when he was fucking drifting and he fucking rail slides the edge of the barge, whether accidentally or purpose.

• 2:28:43Speaker 01

Cause that was the first day of filming.

• 2:28:45Matt Farah?

  Is that intentional rail slide?

• 2:28:47Speaker 01

No, that was intentional. We kept pushing it. We kept pushing it. Yeah, bold stunt for the first day for sure. Um, we would have drained the car and rebuilt it. So, and the team was prepared to do it. So, um, one of the things we had told Travis in all, any of the water situations is if you feel yourself either starting to drown or go off, just both feet in, foot off the clutch. Cause not only do you want the engine to, you want to turn off the engine, but you want it to stop.

• 2:29:13Matt Farah?

  You want to stall it.

• 2:29:14Speaker 01

You want to stall it and get all the cylinders to stop so you don't suck water in and blow, you know, blow all the valves and hydro lock the engine. Um, you know, it's a rally car, so you've got mill spec wiring. Most of it's waterproof. Like they would have had to dry it out. It probably would have taken a day or two, but they would have got it back together. So, but yeah. But like, we had a crane there that was there, ready to go pull it out if we needed. We had divers. So, yeah, but we don't have, we never have a backup car. There's never a. That was a pretty deep board slide for a car. I mean, that was. So Travis and I had this whole conversation of can you go, uh, more than, can you go deeper than he went before? And like, of course I'm not in the car. So like, I can take the bet. I'm like, of course you can. You know how to swim, right?

• 2:29:55Speaker 01

And so he went two wheels off and unfortunately um there was a camera below that showed both wheels off and the GoPro died as you hear the car coming to the edge.

• 2:30:06Speaker 02

  No.

• 2:30:06Speaker 01

So you hear like wheee and it just goes black.

• 2:30:09Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 2:30:11Speaker 01

So um so if you watch in the drone shot, you can see that both wheels are off and you can see in Travis's face that he feels it go. Yeah. You can see the shock in his face of like, oh, boy, I might be going off and he's you can hear the rev limiter hit because at that point like nothing's touching the ground and then it.

• 2:30:28Speaker 02

If you watch the tight shot, front right wheel comes off the ground for a little bit.

• 2:30:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:30:32Speaker 02

  One drive wheel.

• 2:30:33Speaker 01

Travis points out, there's a moment where only one wheel has traction.

• 2:30:36Speaker 02

  Dude.

• 2:30:37Speaker 01

Well, and then the whole center of the car on like a board slide.

• 2:30:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:30:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:30:41Speaker 02

  Sick.

• 2:30:42Matt Farah?

Uh, let's see, keep going down, keep scrolling.

• 2:30:48Speaker 01

By the way, I love seeing some names here that are also on my Patreon. So like.

• 2:30:52Matt Farah?

  Oh, really?

• 2:30:52Speaker 01

Like Duffle Shuffle. Uh, yeah, it's also on there.

• 2:30:55Matt Farah?

Uh, let's see. Ham only fans. Ham only fans is pretty good.

• 2:31:01Speaker 01

Ham only fans is a group. I would pay 10 bucks a month for just like fresh, explicit hamon.

• 2:31:09Matt Farah?

That would be a great delivery service.

• 2:31:11Speaker 01

Ham only fans. Ken would have invested in that business. He was the biggest hamon friend. He would go to Spain and just send me photos of like a of like a pork of a pig's leg.

• 2:31:21Matt Farah?

  That's me.

• 2:31:22Speaker 01

And be like, yeah, here you go.

• 2:31:23Matt Farah?

All day, every day. Ham only fans. Uh, products, projects you pitched at Hoonigan that you weren't able to do, but you wish could have happened.

• 2:31:31Speaker 01

So many. Uh, most of them were crazy road trip ideas. So like, hey, we want to do this really, really crazy thing. And usually it was because for the whole team to be out of office for two weeks to make one YouTube episode.

• 2:31:45Matt Farah?

  Makes sense.

• 2:31:45Speaker 01

Just didn't make sense. It just it just wasn't feasible. Um, I would say um the ones that really stand out uh was well, we were supposed to go race the Nürburgring. I talked about that on my first pod, but um I would say. Yeah, I don't know. Maybe I don't want to say, maybe I want to keep them. Maybe, maybe there's ones, maybe there's ones I want to hold, but there was a bunch of, we, we tried to do Jim Canna in Monte Carlo and they turned us down.

• 2:32:10Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:32:10Speaker 01

But that would have been super, super cool. We were going to do recoil in Cuba. We ended up not doing it with, with BJ, BJ went and did it. With Andy Bell at, at Sweatpants instead, a whole bunch of reasons, but we, we had this whole shoot in a different part of Cuba that never got done. And I still go back and look at the photos because I think it's one of the craziest scouts, like where just the capabilities of it. So like one day when the border opens back up, maybe, maybe do that. And that's on the Jim films. Otherwise it was always just like a crazy, let's go buy a shitty car and try to get somewhere dangerous.

• 2:32:46Matt Farah?

We've done that. That's pretty fun.

• 2:32:48Speaker 01

It's always fun. And I don't know if it's, I think there's a smaller bit of the audience that enjoys it. It's not a million views, but it's something that like we always really enjoy.

• 2:32:57Matt Farah?

Yes. All right. I'd never do this, but the smoldering rim says it's my son's eighth birthday. He's an aspiring F1 driver. Can you wish him a happy birthday? Happy birthday, Sebastian. If you've made it this far into this podcast, you're probably asleep because you're eight.

• 2:33:11Speaker 01

Happy birthday, Sebastian. And you, maybe you should, is there like a non-explicit version of this?

• 2:33:17Matt Farah?

I don't recommend you let your kids listen. David Hasselhoff Meister kink shame. Opinion on re badging foreign cars sold in the U.S. to their home brands such as Pontiac, GTO or G8 and going for the Holden badging. I'm okay with that.

• 2:33:35Speaker 01

Yeah. I mean, I, I kind of love the Mercur XR4 TI, which is a rebranded Sierra.

• 2:33:40Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:33:41Speaker 01

And it was done at a time when the U.S. companies were so trying to be German that they created a fake brand to import cars built in Europe as a German car to compete with BMW. It's, it's marketing.

• 2:33:53Matt Farah?

Interesting. And like, it seems in hindsight, so silly. Like they came up with like an unpronounceable fucking name.

• 2:34:01Speaker 01

  That sounded close to Mercury.

• 2:34:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:34:03Speaker 01

And they were available at Mercury dealerships. And on top of all of that, now anyone who owns them rebrands them back.

• 2:34:09Matt Farah?

  Ford's.

• 2:34:10Speaker 01

Yeah. If you have one now, it probably has says Sierra 500 or something.

• 2:34:14Matt Farah?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:34:15Speaker 01

Yeah, so, but I'm, I'm, I'm okay with it. I actually, I miss that era. I feel like we've gotten on to this global car world where we kind of just get a bit of everything now. And I miss there being like these weird cars in Brazil or Australia that you didn't get here. And then all of a sudden, you'd get like a little peek of it. I mean, look, Chevy was never gonna build the GTO for, for the American audience. They built it because they already had it.

• 2:34:38Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:34:38Speaker 01

Like, we would have never gotten the GTO or the, or the G8. And those are both fun cars.

• 2:34:42Matt Farah?

They're, the G8 was a good car. The GTO, I wish was just called whatever the fuck they call it in Australia.

• 2:34:48Speaker 01

  Monaro.

• 2:34:48Matt Farah?

It didn't, yeah, Monaro, yeah. It just didn't feel like GT, especially because Mustang had, you know, Ford had this retro future thing.

• 2:34:57Speaker 01

  With the retro thing.

• 2:34:58Matt Farah?

That really looked like, in hindsight, by comparison, it looked kind of lame, even though it was a nice car.

• 2:35:03Speaker 01

Yeah, I was in my mid twenties. It had an LS and could do donuts, so I was pretty stoked by it.

• 2:35:09Matt Farah?

Uh, Cayman Messiah, Cayman Mysock, okay? Oh, Cayman Mysock, got it, got it. Uh, you have a rally through South American country. What car would you give the 911 Dakar treatment?

• 2:35:24Speaker 01

  Uh, oh, South.

• 2:35:26Matt Farah?

And what country would you want to drive in? Sorry.

• 2:35:28Speaker 01

Um, which car would I give the Dakar treatment? It's, it's crazy to me. I'm just gonna point this out of saying, yeah, like, thinking of like, something as a 911 Dakar treatment?

• 2:35:39Matt Farah?

  Yeah, it's weird.

• 2:35:40Speaker 01

Because, yeah, like, the rally cars.

• 2:35:42Matt Farah?

Safari, it's a Safari spec car or something. Um,

• 2:35:48Speaker 01

I like the Volkswagen Quantum Synchro. It's all wheel drive. They made variants of that, like the Santana and stuff that was available in South America, so you'd be able to find parts. Volkswagens are sort of like really big in South America, so spare parts are pretty good. And I already own one. I have a white, one of those actually might have been mine, but, uh, and it's a wagon, like, I think wagons are like the best for travel. Yeah, that thing is perfect.

• 2:36:16Matt Farah?

  It's pretty sweet.

• 2:36:17Speaker 01

It's pretty cool. So, it's basically of.

• 2:36:20Matt Farah?

A Mercedes 500 SLC wide body rally, you know, from the eighties?

• 2:36:26Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:36:28Matt Farah?

  Rally car?

• 2:36:29Speaker 01

Yeah, um, crazy thing that never happened to Hoonigan was we got ASAP Rocky bought one.

• 2:36:35Matt Farah?

  Uh huh.

• 2:36:35Speaker 01

And it like ended up at our shop and they were like, and it was like, yeah ASAP wants you guys to finish this. And it just never ended up happening and like.

• 2:36:43Matt Farah?

  What happened to the car?

• 2:36:45Speaker 01

We eventually just shipped it back to them. Like they closed a building, Wheel Pros had closed down the building. And like, one of the last things to leave was like ASAP's Mercedes, like in the corner. But they built a fake one for a music video and then he was like, I want a real rally car. Like, so they sent it to us to build and that was pretty cool.

• 2:37:01Matt Farah?

Those, they, I bet they drive like blah, but they look awesome and that's all that matters.

• 2:37:06Speaker 01

  Looking cool is more important.

• 2:37:07Matt Farah?

Looking cool is more important. Uh, all right, hang on.

• 2:37:10Speaker 02

  Sorry.

• 2:37:12Matt Farah?

Oh, uh, let's see. Single barrel V8 vintage. What song turns your sensible, sensible drive into an action, action movie soundtrack? Making it impossible to stick to the speed limit?

• 2:37:28Speaker 01

Mine is gonna be so incredibly, uh, is gonna be so incredibly cliche.

• 2:37:34Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 2:37:35Speaker 01

Motley Crue, Kick Start My Heart.

• 2:37:36Matt Farah?

All right, that is cliche, you're right.

• 2:37:38Speaker 01

So cliche, but it's so good. The other one is the, um, Girl Talk soundtrack, like Girl Talk album.

• 2:37:43Matt Farah?

  Oh, yeah, Girl Talk.

• 2:37:43Speaker 01

That's my Canyon music. I don't know what it is. It just flows really well. It's like a good, it's like good flow. Like, I don't know if it makes me drive too fast, but it's like Girl Talk, like that first, whatever that album was, like, yeah.

• 2:37:54Matt Farah?

If I had to pick a one song, I would say like, probably like Toxicity by System of a Down.

• 2:37:59Speaker 01

  I could see that.

• 2:37:59Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, that whole album, any of them will make me.

• 2:38:02Matt Farah?

  That'll do it.

• 2:38:03Speaker 02

  For sure.

• 2:38:03Matt Farah?

  Yeah, that'll do it.

• 2:38:04Speaker 02

And cliche, but, um, from Super Troopers, the BD Bada Boda, whatever it's called. It's got, it's got a jam and it's got a good beat to it.

• 2:38:11Matt Farah?

Yeah. Uh, is that it? One more and then I?

• 2:38:15Speaker 02

Last one's about zingers, so we can save it.

• 2:38:17Matt Farah?

  Oh.

• 2:38:21Matt Farah?

Yeah, uh, so do you want to, I can do that one. Does, uh, Zach's new coil over pothole awareness. Uh, can you talk about Zinger beating the Koenigsegg Seder Spear Laguna Seca time by two seconds? Um, yeah, basically, uh, to my understanding, when, um, they got their, when they did the previous Laguna Seca time, when they beat their record by only a small amount, um, the record that Koenigsegg had taken back from them, um, he like, Joel like crashed the car on his like second lap, like hit the, went off and went in the tire wall and like fucked up the aero a bit. And so like went out and managed to set a lap

• 2:39:04Matt Farah?

that did break their previous best, but it wasn't the best that they could do. Right. It was the best that they could do on that day after having just crashed the car into a tire wall and like patching it up with fucking duct tape or whatever. Uh, it's a miracle they did get a lap down, but they went back and they got, I think, better weather. Um, and they had a fixed car.

• 2:39:26Speaker 02

Yeah. So the timeline was in November, November 7th of this year, Koenigsegg beat Zinger's time by just six tenths of a second.

• 2:39:33Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:39:34Speaker 02

And now Zinger went back, uh, one month later, essentially, a month and a week and beat their time by two seconds.

• 2:39:40Matt Farah?

  Two seconds at Laguna.

• 2:39:42Speaker 01

Do you feel like this is ramping back up again, or am I just out of the, the sort of circle right now of like, like track times and also Nürburgring times? Like, do you feel like this is coming back? Cause I feel like when I was at 060, it was the height of the Nürburgring runs.

• 2:39:58Matt Farah?

  Which was ZR1 GTI.

• 2:39:59Speaker 01

Yeah. And, and then obviously the Viper, right?

• 2:40:02Speaker 02

I think ring times are still promoted and talked about as much as they were back then. I think what these folks are doing is trying to have a track besides Nürburgring that people care about. Like the fact that Koenigsegg went to Laguna and, you know, these guys, I mean, this is Zinger's backyard more.

• 2:40:18Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:40:19Speaker 02

But I think they're trying to establish other track records.

• 2:40:21Speaker 01

I feel like Gunther has done some time, like a bunch of people are trying to do.

• 2:40:24Matt Farah?

I think, I think the, like, it's a self perpetuating cycle. Like the more people know what a good lap Time is on a track, the more people will go to that track and set a good lap time and that will and that happened with the Nürburgring for a while and then they're like, wait, wait, can we, can we have an America? And they sort of, once the Viper did the 133 and that was the special edition and then Randy beat it and did the 20. Then it was like, okay, now it's kind of on and because Zinger is like a California company and doing this thing. They're like all aboard Laguna.

• 2:40:54Speaker 02

Well, they need a bunch of records in a week. And I mean, this is also a lot cheaper than rent. You know, if you want to close the Nürburgring to try to set your time, hopefully the conditions are right. I think the cost is probably much higher than renting Laguna.

• 2:41:04Matt Farah?

The 21C will make sound at Laguna too. It doesn't need a special exhaust like it can, you can run a quiet day, the 21C, it's not that loud.

• 2:41:12Speaker 02

  Right.

• 2:41:12Matt Farah?

Yeah. So, I mean, dude, what was, what is the current, what is the new time? Is it a 22?

• 2:41:21Matt Farah?

Wait, 122.3 dude at Laguna. Dude, the Viper ACR that they were selling was a 133 and Randy Pope's in the Sena, in the McLaren Sena did a 27. And this is five seconds a lap quicker than a fucking Sena. That car and Max from Zinger hit me up and he was like, this car, this white car is going to be drivable. Like, I was like, can I take it to the track? And he was like, yeah.

• 2:41:53Speaker 01

  That's awesome.

• 2:41:53Matt Farah?

So I drove one of these. It was unfucking believable, dude.

• 2:41:57Speaker 01

Let me ask you a question. I'm gonna maybe try to dust off my automotive journalist identification card and get it reinstated. I haven't driven a press car, like other than like the owners I get because they're companies I work with. Like, you know, Audi or like Hyundai or something like that. But

• 2:42:14Speaker 01

  what are three cars?

• 2:42:15Matt Farah?

  I should drive.

• 2:42:17Speaker 01

Like, what are? Oh, this is a good one. Because I'm so Cars you haven't And realize like, like when I left, it's been so long, like when I left, like the, I don't even think the C7 was long.

• 2:42:28Matt Farah?

  Okay.

• 2:42:29Speaker 01

So like, like I was like,

• 2:42:31Matt Farah?

  Got it.

• 2:42:31Speaker 01

You know, like one of the last cool things I drove was the Pratt Miller race car. Right? Like, like, like, that's the end of my era because I started tuning in with Ken in 2010. So like 2009 is like my cutoff. What are like, and I, things have so changed. Like, what are those like three cars? They're like, you really need to experience this.

• 2:42:49Matt Farah?

Okay. I, I mean, if you can get in this, this is-

• 2:42:53Speaker 01

This almost seems like too crazy.

• 2:42:54Matt Farah?

Yeah, but you, but you probably could get a drive in it.

• 2:42:56Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 2:42:57Matt Farah?

Um, it's there, this is bananas. This is, this is the differentest thing that is out there.

• 2:43:02Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:43:02Matt Farah?

Um, let's see. You should also drive, oh, this is a great question.

• 2:43:10Speaker 02

I think you should drive, uh, I would say this, a Lucid Sapphire.

• 2:43:18Matt Farah?

Uh, yeah, or a Tay, a Taycan Turbo GT.

• 2:43:21Speaker 02

Or that, cause the magic suspension. Like, drive the fastest, most advanced EV just to see where they're at.

• 2:43:26Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:43:26Speaker 02

And then either like a 911ST, cause it's like new, but sort of retro.

• 2:43:31Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:43:31Speaker 02

  Or, um-

• 2:43:33Matt Farah?

Or the new Turbo S, like hybrid, or a ZR, Corvette ZR1.

• 2:43:37Speaker 02

You know, well, I think the ZR1 is almost too close to this, cause they're both insane power, but the Z06, I think is interesting, cause it looks like Corvette, feels like Corvette, sounds like Ferrari.

• 2:43:45Matt Farah?

  Right.

• 2:43:45Speaker 02

And it's almost like, here's how inexpensive, relatively, performance has gotten, because last time you had a-

• 2:43:51Speaker 01

  I mean, I had, I had a C8 for a year.

• 2:43:53Speaker 02

  Oh, you did, that's right.

• 2:43:54Speaker 01

So, that, that is a pretty amazing platform, considering the price.

• 2:43:57Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:43:58Speaker 01

What they've done with that, so.

• 2:43:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, then I think, uh-

• 2:44:00Matt Farah?

Yeah, 911ST, a Zinger, and a fucking, either a Lucid Sapphire, or a Taycan Turbo GT.

• 2:44:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:44:08Speaker 01

The guys from Lucid actually reached out to me, maybe, cause I was on this pod, but I was just saying that I didn't really find, you know, EVs to be fun to drive, cause they don't handle. And they reached out to me and said, hey, you need to come drive this now.

• 2:44:19Matt Farah?

No, they do. There's a lot of criticisms of EVs, but the ones that are really fast, they fucking handle. And the other one you should try is the Mach-E Rally, which is, like, has unbelievable body control, and you can fucking rotate it on dirt.

• 2:44:33Speaker 01

I saw a clip from you on one of the, yeah.

• 2:44:34Matt Farah?

  Oh, it's spectacular. They're, they're the jam.

• 2:44:36Speaker 01

  Alright.

• 2:44:37Matt Farah?

If I, if I couldn't get my car sorted into ice race, I was gonna call Ford and see if they would give me a Mach-E Rally for that, but, but Mags will be more fun.

• 2:44:45Speaker 01

When do you think the, uh, the Mustang Raptor is gonna make? Do you think that's actually coming to fruition?

• 2:44:51Matt Farah?

  The Safari Mustang?

• 2:44:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:44:52Matt Farah?

  I don't know.

• 2:44:53Speaker 02

  That's a fun idea.

• 2:44:53Matt Farah?

  It'll be cool. They should.

• 2:44:55Speaker 01

  I think it'd be badass.

• 2:44:56Matt Farah?

They should, absolutely should. Well, and you know, Jamal Hamidi-

• 2:44:59Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 2:45:00Matt Farah?

Has left Jaguar Land Rover, and is developing an off-road supercar under his own brand now.

• 2:45:07Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:45:07Matt Farah?

Which is supposedly- Wow. Do you, is there actually, is this a real rumor that there's going to be a Mustang Raptor?

• 2:45:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:45:14Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 2:45:14Speaker 01

  It's a real rumor.

• 2:45:15Matt Farah?

  Really?

• 2:45:16Speaker 01

Yeah, and I've like spoken to people internal who are saying that like, yeah, it's, it's happening. The Raptor has done so well.

• 2:45:24Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:45:25Speaker 01

They've seen the opportunity with like the car and you know, all this that for them, there's an audience to, that would want this, maybe a lower price point or entry point and it works really well.

• 2:45:35Matt Farah?

I bet it would be amazing.

• 2:45:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:45:36Matt Farah?

Like that would be a fun car to drive across South America, you know, Mustang rally car for sure. That would be an amazing time, dude. That'd be fucking so good. I love that.

• 2:45:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:45:47Matt Farah?

Good time. I'll take that to Ice Race. Scotto's podcast is on your YouTube channel?

• 2:45:53Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 2:45:53Matt Farah?

  And wherever people get podcasts?

• 2:45:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, wherever people get podcasts.

• 2:45:56Matt Farah?

  Search Brian Scotto.

• 2:45:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's called Very Vehicular.

• 2:46:00Matt Farah?

  That's it?

• 2:46:00Speaker 01

  Not Vehicular Man's Laughter.

• 2:46:02Matt Farah?

That'll be our... Yes. Very Vehicular, a Scotto, a Scotto podcast.

• 2:46:08Speaker 01

Yeah, you see where it's coming.

• 2:46:10Matt Farah?

  Leave the door open.

• 2:46:11Speaker 01

  Leaving the door open.

• 2:46:12Matt Farah?

  Leave the door open.

• 2:46:13Speaker 01

Yeah, there'll be like 19 of them, none of them will ever finish all 25 podcasts, only half of them run, but you know.

• 2:46:19Matt Farah?

  Oh, boy.

• 2:46:20Speaker 01

Not here for a long time.

• 2:46:21Matt Farah?

Well, two and a half hours.

• 2:46:22Speaker 01

  It's alright.

• 2:46:23Matt Farah?

It's not, they don't all have to be records, but they can...

• 2:46:26Speaker 01

I don't want to set another record, I let the record stand.

• 2:46:28Matt Farah?

  Yeah.

• 2:46:28Speaker 01

Breaking your own record is obnoxious.

• 2:46:32Matt Farah?

  Right, zinger?

• 2:46:33Speaker 01

Gotta let other people come in.

• 2:46:35Matt Farah?

Well, they let companies that come in and come back.

• 2:46:37Speaker 01

  And top yourself.

• 2:46:37Matt Farah?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Thanks, buddy. Good luck, uh, good luck getting home in that S8.

• 2:46:42Speaker 01

It was making some weird noises, but we'll figure it out.

• 2:46:45Matt Farah?

They all do that. See the rest of you. See the rest, see y'all next week. Bye.
