• 2:19Bill Simmons?

All right, guys. Four wisecracking New Yorkers against a marshmallow apocalypse is the actual sentence in the description for this movie. I think on Netflix or somewhere. The eight biggest 80s movies, just biggest.

• 2:33Chris Ryan?

  Let's hear it.

• 2:34Bill Simmons?

Just by year, I'm not ranking these.

• 2:36Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 2:36Bill Simmons?

Empire, Raiders, E.T., Jedi, Beverly's Cop, Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and Batman. Those are the eight biggest movies by how much money they made, what they meant to pop culture, just how huge they were.

• 2:51Chris Ryan?

This is you ranking them or did you get this as a metric?

• 2:53Bill Simmons?

No, I'm not ranking. I'm just putting that in order from 1980 to 89. I think those are the eight. And I thought Top Gun would be in there, but it just didn't make as much money as those. These movies made huge money. They changed the lives of the people that were in them. They infiltrated pop culture for months and months. And I think that's the list. So why this movie is here?

• 3:12Chris Ryan?

I mean, for seven-year-old me, this was the most important thing in the world. Like, 84, I don't even think I had a relationship to Saturday Night Live. But this is the perfect mixture of childlike wonder with like adult humor. And so you're watching this movie and you get, when you're a kid, you get like 25%, 50% of the jokes, maybe?

• 3:31Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 3:32Chris Ryan?

But there's just something about Murray and the tone that you're like, I'm mesmerized by this, as well as the ghosts and the Marshmallow Man and everything else. So this was, to me, I mean, this is like a story about monoculture. This is a story about like, I don't know anybody that doesn't like Ghostbusters. I don't know anybody that doesn't like Madonna, Prince and Bruce Springsteen either. It's like, 84, we just made stuff that like, everybody was kind of like, yeah, it's pretty good, or great, or I love it, or I'm obsessed with it.

• 3:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it was funny re-watching it. It's just like putting on like an old comfy sweatshirt that you've had forever. You're like, oh, I love when I put this on. It just feels so good.

• 4:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 4:07Bill Simmons?

  I just love this.

• 4:08Chris Ryan?

  That's what it's been for forty-two years.

• 4:11Speaker 02

You know, I was watching the movie and about twenty minutes into it, like, I, I started to feel so good about the experience that I was having, that I tried to like, sit up for a second, take a step back and go, why is this happening? Like, why does this movie still work like this on me? And I don't know. I wish I could have come up with an answer. Bill Murray makes me feel at home. Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray together, magic. Ghosts in New York. The way I view and think of New York, a lot of it oriented and created by this movie.

• 4:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 4:45Speaker 02

Like, it's, it's, I can't explain why it's still so perfect for me, but it did not lose one step.

• 4:52Chris Ryan?

You were a little bit older when it came out, so was there any cynicism about it for you, or is there, what's your relationship?

• 4:57Bill Simmons?

No, it was the opposite. I was got, I was thinking back to eighty-four. We had no, no MCU really. We had a couple Superman films.

• 5:05Speaker 02

No MCU really, there was no MCU. Doesn't exist.

• 5:08Bill Simmons?

Well, with DC Comics, not really. They were all either on TV or comic books.

• 5:14Chris Ryan?

  We haven't, yeah.

• 5:15Bill Simmons?

  There was Flash Gordon.

• 5:16Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 5:17Bill Simmons?

For Alien movies, we had like ET. But at that point, Murray and Aykroyd are comedy royalty from SNL, from the first five years of the show. You have that. You have, everyone kind of knew this was a Belushi movie, and then he died.

• 5:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 5:32Bill Simmons?

So that, that kind of put that on the radar a little bit. And then they really, really promoted it in the perfect way, because they put out that No Ghosts thing. That was out like-

• 5:43Speaker 02

I ain't afraid of no ghosts?

• 5:45Bill Simmons?

  Well, it just-

• 5:45Chris Ryan?

  Was it simple?

• 5:46Bill Simmons?

You didn't know what it was.

• 5:47Speaker 02

  With the slash through.

• 5:48Bill Simmons?

They did like, almost like viral marketing, and then they had the MTV, the Ray Parker song, and they had a great video.

• 5:54Speaker 02

  Great video.

• 5:54Bill Simmons?

And it was on for that whole summer, but this was summer of eighty-four, which was the Olympics in LA. It was the height of Michael Jackson and Springsteen and all these different things. Michael Jordan's about to be in the NBA, and just pop culture was ready for this. So it was this and Beverly Hills Cop, both in the same year, combined with a million other things.

• 6:13Chris Ryan?

And reading about the movie and like, the way it was released and the way it was marketed was huge summer movie, that then became what everybody dressed as for Halloween. And then became a huge Christmas movie because people were giving each other toys, Ghostbusters toys for Christmas. So it essentially stretched through three quarters of eighty-four of of people routinely going. And you think about like Project Hail Mary will probably make more money, I think, than Oppenheimer. They're projecting now.

• 6:42Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, oh, my god.

• 6:43Chris Ryan?

But Project Hail Mary is like, kind of already out of the consciousness. Like, I mean, people are going to see it, people dig it, and, you know, like, my wife only just saw it. But it's not like, I don't think people are going to be dressed as as as Brian Gosling from Project Hail Mary for Halloween. I think you'll probably see more Ghostbusters than you will that.

• 7:01Bill Simmons?

It was also just a really great idea for a movie. Everything is novel. Comedy, ghosts, but not scary ghosts, but kind of scary. It's fun and it's New York City. It just worked.

• 7:12Speaker 02

Everything is novel in the movie. Like, everything is something that we kind of hadn't seen before.

• 7:16Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 7:17Speaker 02

We hadn't really seen the proton packs. We hadn't seen, like, we hadn't seen paranormal guys fighting ghosts in this way with a hotline. Everything is brand new, which is a problem that we run into now, is we compare movies in the age that we're living in right now to movies of the past. And we just forget that, like, we've seen a lot of shit. Like, we've seen a lot of stuff.

• 7:39Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 7:39Speaker 02

The reason why centers worked so well for a lot of people is because that was kind of, not in plot, obviously, the plot was a little derivative, but there was kind of some shit that we hadn't quite seen before.

• 7:50Bill Simmons?

You're talking about original IP movies.

• 7:52Speaker 02

Original IP movies, but even beyond that, forget about that. I'm talking about, like, thi- this movie, we're talking about, like, Gozer and, like, Zul and these ancient demons that they're fighting, ghosts taking over New York. They're doing all of this, but to your point, they're not doing it like seriously. They're never real, they're scared, but they're wisecracking their way through it.

• 8:13Bill Simmons?

Yeah, they fall into a sinkhole and you don't feel like they're, is there any chance they die? It's like, oh, yeah, they'll get up.

• 8:19Chris Ryan?

This movie, I mean, I have this for later and stuff, but like, we should talk about now. Like, the way that they tell this story is completely different than the way they would do it in twenty twenty-six. And it was completely different than the way that the sequels kind of worked out, where they're spending. Way too much time explaining the sort of paranormal mechanics of a lot of this stuff, or the history, or the cult history of this, the occult history of this stuff. This is just kinda like, yeah, it goes to the Gozerian, the traveler, the goat, the key, key master, the gatekeeper.

• 8:47Speaker 02

Yeah, they can't meet. Something bad will happen. You don't want them to have, well, I think that would be.

• 8:51Chris Ryan?

Even the way they talk about crossing the streams, they're just like, it would be very bad.

• 8:54Speaker 02

  Right.

• 8:54Chris Ryan?

  You know what I mean?

• 8:55Bill Simmons?

Yeah, there's no five minute explanation.

• 8:56Speaker 02

We're gonna get to this, like, they do all of this stuff, do you know how many questions the audience would have now? They build the containment serum, and we talk about that later. It's like, they say it's a nuclear reactor, in the middle, what essentially is like Tribeca or something like.

• 9:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 9:10Speaker 02

It's like, it's like, to all of this stuff, what the movie does is it, it puts a lot of faith in its performers.

• 9:16Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 9:17Speaker 02

They explain the bigger stuff, and they leave the smaller stuff, it just let, they let it linger.

• 9:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 9:22Bill Simmons?

It was fun reliving it through my kids when they got to the right age to watch this, which is probably like six or seven. It's not like that scary, it's, there's no sex stuff. It's scary in the right ways, you're not gonna have nightmares at night, it's funny. It's not like subversive sexual humor funny.

• 9:38Chris Ryan?

Yeah, barely any sex, except for the.

• 9:41Bill Simmons?

It's not even like a lot of like great jokes, it's just more the people seem really funny.

• 9:46Chris Ryan?

Well, there's not a lot of gags.

• 9:47Bill Simmons?

Yeah, there's not a lot of one liners and gags.

• 9:49Chris Ryan?

  Well, I, I would just.

• 9:50Bill Simmons?

Well, there's a lot of one liners that come out of the movie, but they're not like well-written gag, gag, gag, punch.

• 9:55Chris Ryan?

No, it's like Murray commenting on the absurdity of being in Ghostbusters throughout the movie.

• 10:01Speaker 02

Yeah, once again, we got to a place in comedies where comedies had to like be really high premise.

• 10:07Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 10:07Speaker 02

They had to be really high premise, and you had to keep coming back to that premise over and over again. Forty year old guy never had sex, the jokes just write themselves, every other scene you can have a joke.

• 10:16Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 10:17Speaker 02

We were in an era at that particular point to where the comedic talent was so overwhelming. If you're talking about Bill Murray or Eddie Murphy, where you could take one of those guys and put them in a situation, and they would funny your scene. They would funny the scene.

• 10:33Bill Simmons?

That's basically what Akroyd said, he's like, we just needed to put him in the place to succeed. This was the best comedy leading man in the world.

• 10:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 10:41Bill Simmons?

Akroyd was really good as the sidekick. Probably Trading Places was the closest where he came to being the co-lead like that. But anytime he tried to veer out on his own with like Dr. Detroit or something like that, he couldn't really carry it. He was always better in a role like this. And I have a lot of thoughts.

• 10:58Speaker 02

Like The Great Outdoors, another one where it's him and Candy.

• 11:01Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 11:01Speaker 02

And they're going back and forth.

• 11:02Bill Simmons?

He always needed like a foil. And then when he hits the nineties, he becomes more of like the Tommy Boy type. Like he pops into movies. What's your relationship with this movie, Craig?

• 11:11Speaker 03

I mean, obviously something that everyone knows and everyone loves and all the, every kid loves. I saw it when I was really young. Have not seen it since. But yeah, it's just like one of those cultural staples that has always been around.

• 11:23Chris Ryan?

But you didn't find it to be like a kids movie when you were watching it? Like just this time?

• 11:27Speaker 03

No, definitely not. I think that's the difference with a lot of comedies back then is it used to be for everyone. And now it's like, is it a kids movie or is it not? Cause a lot of the jokes I would not have gotten when I was eight years old.

• 11:38Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 11:38Speaker 03

  Like most of them almost.

• 11:39Chris Ryan?

The funniest thing, like, like the things that make me laugh now are so different than what made me laugh about it.

• 11:45Speaker 02

Did you guys ever watch movies like this with your parents?

• 11:48Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 11:48Speaker 02

So that is something that all, that's an interesting experience. Cause now, parents, I'm not a parent, but the sense that I get is that parents don't watch more adult oriented comedies with their kids as much as they used to. I don't know that, that's, but when I would watch Ghostbusters, my dad would laugh at the scene when she's possessed. And he would laugh at that scene because that's a scene that an older, slightly nasty.

• 12:14Speaker 03

  Sexual innuendo.

• 12:15Speaker 02

It's a sexual innuendo. He would be like, look, she said, she said, get inside me. He not gonna do it. Cause she got a demon. He can't do it. She got a demon in her. And so like the whole, that is how I learned that I was supposed to find that funny.

• 12:27Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 12:27Speaker 02

Like I, I knew that like there was a joke being made there that I didn't get. And I, I watched it. I understood it by watching adults react to it.

• 12:35Speaker 03

I remember my parents cracking up at the, the scene with the mayor. And not just because of dogs and cats living together, but just because of like.

• 12:42Chris Ryan?

Ed Koch stand in negotiating with the Ghostbusters and the, you know, the Cardinal Archbishop's there and the Chief of Police and they were cracking up at this guy, letting the Ghostbusters do whatever they wanted because of Vanek pointing out, you'll have saved the lives of millions of registered voters. And they were like hysterical about it. I was like, I don't get it. Like, it seems like the Ghostbusters made a compelling argument.

• 13:05Speaker 03

Do you, I don't even, do you think Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray and Ramis would have said that we are making a kids movie as they were writing the film?

• 13:11Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 13:11Speaker 03

  I would say no.

• 13:12Bill Simmons?

They wanted, they were trying to make a huge comedy.

• 13:14Speaker 03

Cause it, it used to be you would make a comedy for adults, but you would have elements in it that kids would like. And now it's, you make a comedy for kids and you have elements in it that adults will like.

• 13:24Chris Ryan?

  Adults can stomach.

• 13:25Speaker 03

Like Zootopia has adult humor in it, but it is a kids movie first.

• 13:29Speaker 02

There is one thing in this movie that lets me know that they at least had a thought that kids would be into it, is that there are no random eighties tits that pop up in the movie anywhere.

• 13:38Speaker 03

  Sure, we'll get there.

• 13:39Bill Simmons?

And they took some of that, they took some of that other stuff out. Like, there was like bad writing on the walls that they decided to change.

• 13:45Speaker 03

And just like the, the animation of the ghosts, like the guy, the like cute green ghosts eating all the food. Like, that is a kids animation.

• 13:52Chris Ryan?

Did they curse in this movie?

• 13:53Speaker 03

  He's a, like.

• 13:53Bill Simmons?

  Not really.

• 13:54Speaker 02

Not really. Not really. So, but the movie is scary at times. The demons turning into stuff. Like, the movie is at times like serious.

• 14:04Bill Simmons?

I think it's scary when they're on the top floor of that building when the, it's basically the building's been blown out and it feels like they could go off the side of the, either side.

• 14:13Speaker 03

  Also, it's just.

• 14:13Bill Simmons?

It's kind of harrowing to watch.

• 14:15Speaker 03

It's just so funny that like, they're like, no nudity, no profanity. These guys can chain smoke.

• 14:19Bill Simmons?

Yeah, right. Oh, my God. There's so much smoke in this. Um, going back to 84, I wrote a piece, I think it was like my second or third year of Page Two, that I thought 1984 was the greatest year ever for, for like people like us. Like with the sports, the pop culture. So you had Beverly Hills Cop, Ghostbusters, you had Purple Rain and The Terminator. So you had Arnold's Entrance. You had 16 Candles and Karate Kid laying the template for the eighties teen movies. You had the peaks of Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Prince and Huey Lewis. And you also had in February, Billie Jean at Motown 25, probably the single greatest television moment of my lifetime. Hulk Hogan wins WWE title. Jordan

• 15:00Bill Simmons?

joins the NBA and Mary Lemieux joins the NHL. We had the first Bird-Magic NBA Finals. We have McEnroe, Gretzky, Bird and Montana in their absolute primes.

• 15:11Bill Simmons?

We had the peak of Biggie's basketball. We have a Thursday NBC with Cosby Show cheers and Family Ties. We have the start of Miami Vice. We have Letterman breaking through, the first slam dunk contest, Madonna's arrival, Flutie wins the Heisman, Tom Hanks makes the leap, Howard Stern in the 84 Olympics with no Russians. I could keep going and going.

• 15:31Chris Ryan?

  Is this Villanova Georgetown?

• 15:33Bill Simmons?

  That was, that was 85.

• 15:34Chris Ryan?

  Eighty-five.

• 15:34Bill Simmons?

But we do have Patrick Union Georgetown. There's like 40 other things I could put in there, but it just felt like, I, I can't explain it, but everything felt really authentic back then. They, they hadn't really put the thought into, we have this coming. Here's how we're gonna shape it. Here's how we're gonna shape the perception of it. Here's how we're gonna promote this. Like Ghostbusters is a summer movie that it just came out. It wasn't like, summer movie season has begun with Ghostbusters. Things just kinda happened and it was cool to be there for that. And watching people slowly figure out how to commercialize a summer like that and all the things that happened was really interesting in real time.

• 16:12Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, some of this is like our origin story and we probably mythologized that time period in some extent.

• 16:19Bill Simmons?

Yeah, but you were seven and I was 15.

• 16:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:21Bill Simmons?

  You know?

• 16:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:22Bill Simmons?

So it was two different stages.

• 16:23Chris Ryan?

But I also think that like, I think that there's something about like the way that culture worked back then. Maybe because it was like they were freely first starting to see a new level of how much money they could make. But even if you think back to the pop stars that we were being given, that was such an interesting mix of people and like sexual identity.

• 16:48Bill Simmons?

  Prince, Michael Jackson.

• 16:49Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:50Bill Simmons?

  Kiwi Lewis and Madonna.

• 16:52Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:52Bill Simmons?

  And Bruce Springsteen.

• 16:53Speaker 02

So even when Ghostbusters 2 comes out, right? The Ghostbusters 2 is a reaction to the new culture that we were in. Big song by Bobby Brown, right? Bobby Brown is in the movie. It's almost a meta-commentary on the Ghostbusters themselves.

• 17:09Chris Ryan?

  They franchised it.

• 17:10Speaker 02

They franchised it. Now, by the time.

• 17:12Bill Simmons?

And felt like they had to get it out before Batman.

• 17:14Speaker 02

  It's the whole nine.

• 17:15Bill Simmons?

  It's just a different spirit.

• 17:16Speaker 02

Already changed because like everything that we're talking about are people that like. Came along in the era, and it's not, I'm not waxing poetic about it because the talent doesn't exist now to do this same stuff. It was just the first time we had seen some of this stuff. It was the first time the, the infrastructure for blockbuster films wasn't quite there yet. It was getting there.

• 17:38Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 17:39Speaker 02

And we weren't as cynical about it. There wasn't like a, a tie in to McDonald's or like, all of that stuff hadn't been established yet. And so now I actually credit the creativity of contemporary artists because they are really going up against some dogs, some legends.

• 17:54Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 17:55Speaker 02

Like just some people that were really, really, really unique in their approach and their creativity.

• 18:00Bill Simmons?

We weren't cynical about anything in 1984. I just like believed whatever. It was like Michael Jackson, big ladies man. It's like, yeah, totally.

• 18:11Bill Simmons?

  I agree.

• 18:14Bill Simmons?

But like, I remember Letterman, I, Letter, this was like probably the greatest Letterman year. And he was, I don't remember if it was 84, 85, but he would just fuck with people. And it was always like organic, like he had a bullhorn, he would go out the window and they're filming the Today Show with Brian Gumbel and he has the bullhorn and he's just messing with them and Brian Gumbel's getting mad and it's like, oh, he made Brian Gumbel mad. And now it'd be like, but just think of it the way that would be dissected now. With social media and everything where it's like, are they feuding? What's going on here? The history of Letterman versus Brian Gumbel. And it's like, it just wasn't like that. I don't know. I miss it.

• 18:50Chris Ryan?

It's amazing to imagine these guys rolling through New York. And this is like, when you read the research about them, like in New York City at the time, it's like, they were like, mayors. They were the kings and like,

• 19:02Bill Simmons?

Well, part of it is from SNL, right? Murray and Ackroyd are like these.

• 19:07Chris Ryan?

But even then, I bet you're starting to get like, everybody's got like this legendary, like I was out and Bill Murray came into the bar at 1:45.

• 19:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 19:15Chris Ryan?

With a Mardi Gras parade and like, you know, they're like these fucking, you know, complete urban legends, but like it's starting to build up. And when you watch him work, whenever he's like working the crowd in this movie, you're like, holy shit. Like this guy could have run for office.

• 19:28Bill Simmons?

  The closing credits are phenomenal.

• 19:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 19:30Bill Simmons?

It's like one of my favorite. They're just in New York City.

• 19:34Speaker 02

In New York, everybody, the cameras getting all different parts of New York culture there, covered in half Stay Puft marshmallow film, getting into the car, smoking, still, another hard day at the work for the, it almost becomes like a documentary at the end of the movie.

• 19:49Bill Simmons?

Dude, they shut down New York, they shut down Times Square, they shut down all around Central Park for days and days.

• 19:55Chris Ryan?

  Rockefeller, yeah.

• 19:56Bill Simmons?

People were like, this is cool, Murray and Ackroyd, leave them alone, they're doing a movie. I just think it was just different back then, because we almost like didn't know any better. And I think the Ghostbusters 2 is a really good way to frame this. It's only five years later.

• 20:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:11Bill Simmons?

But by the time that comes out, and there was a bunch of other sequels, some of them we've talked about, like we talked about Another Forty Eight Hours, but like, a bunch of the sequels that came out, late eighties, early nineties, were just money grabs.

• 20:23Chris Ryan?

A little fatter, doing it a little bit more against their will.

Even by the time we get to Batman, Batman is an interesting case study in what it is that we're talking about. Batman is a swing, no doubt about it. The character itself is very well known, obviously, in American pop culture, but Tim Burton at that time is an auteur auteur, and to give him that type of deal, it's a swing. It's like not the safest thing.

• 20:47Bill Simmons?

And Michael Keaton as Batman was a swing.

• 20:48Speaker 02

This is a swing, it's not the safest thing in the world to do. However, though, that movie is one of the first movies of that era that was primed to be a box office blockbuster.

• 20:59Bill Simmons?

  With thought put into it.

• 21:00Speaker 02

With thought put into it. They already knew that we were into the era of the blockbuster, that the nineties would be huge, huge, huge, they had already, it's eighty nine when that comes out, all the lessons from the eighties had been learned. So while it's an eighties movie.

• 21:13Bill Simmons?

They knew there were sequels after, they had it planned out.

• 21:16Speaker 02

They had everything, they had the tie-ins, they had all of that stuff done, so it is very pure of what we're talking about, but at the same time, it's a reaction to the movies that came out in the decade prior to it.

• 21:28Bill Simmons?

Last Crusade was a little like that too.

• 21:29Speaker 02

  It absolutely was like that.

• 21:31Bill Simmons?

Yeah. But it felt very calculated with the attacks.

• 21:33Chris Ryan?

It truly kind of comes to a, it's like a head with Jurassic, because Jurassic is like, it's non-negotiable, you're going to see this, and you're gonna love it.

• 21:41Bill Simmons?

  There's dinosaurs.

• 21:42Chris Ryan?

And there's already shit to buy before the movie even comes out.

• 21:45Bill Simmons?

  Collector's cuffs.

• 21:46Speaker 02

But can I tell you, The Last Crusade is actually a really good example of this, because to me, it took a long time for that movie to be properly appreciated.

• 21:54Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 21:54Speaker 02

Because of the way it was when it came out and it was such a big deal. It was maybe the first event.

• 22:00Chris Ryan?

But they had like a Pepsi ad.

• 22:01Speaker 02

They had the whole deal was the whole deal was a big corporate thing. And I think that that hurt and they have Sean Connery in the movie. They actually cast somebody to be equally yoked to Harrison Ford in it. So it was a movie star vehicle, big summer event.

• 22:16Chris Ryan?

But there's stuff about Ghostbusters in the making of it that does kind of like project on to like even today where they're like, they have a release date before they have a script.

• 22:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:25Chris Ryan?

You know, like they have, you know, like there, there are certain like parameters around this movie. I think they knew.

• 22:32Bill Simmons?

Murray was like not knowing until.

• 22:34Chris Ryan?

  They were like.

• 22:35Bill Simmons?

The last minute that he was doing it.

• 22:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 22:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 22:40Bill Simmons?

I don't know. I miss it. I miss not knowing a lot about a movie. Like all we knew from this movie were a couple of commercials. We didn't have that whole infrastructure in place about the stories about it, anything like, I know we all approached this differently. I tried not to know anything about a movie when it's coming out. Like even when we went and saw Sinners, like I, I don't think I a hundred percent knew there are vampires. I, or I knew something was going on or we, or that it was going back to nineteen. There's something I didn't know about it because I had been so steadfast of avoiding everything. But these in nineteen eighty-four, this would just pop out. We knew Prince was making a movie.

• 23:15Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 23:16Bill Simmons?

Knew that the video would come out kind of before the movie and that was the first taste of it. Other than that, you didn't know anything. And it was kind of the audience would decide and that's how it went.

• 23:25Speaker 03

But now you have to know everything to get people to go to the theater.

• 23:28Bill Simmons?

Like Project Kill Mary, you think that was the case?

• 23:32Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, they certainly reveal.

• 23:35Bill Simmons?

  It was Gosling.

• 23:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 23:36Bill Simmons?

  Certain.

• 23:37Chris Ryan?

You knew he was gonna see, the trailer gives away that he meets an alien out there.

• 23:40Speaker 03

A lot of movies tease the twists in the trailer now because they just need to sell as much as they can to get you off your ass to go into the theater. So they have to tell you basically what the whole story is.

• 23:48Speaker 02

Because their premise heavy because we don't have the same crop of stars that we.

• 23:52Speaker 03

Well, and Spielberg is doing the opposite with this current movie where he's not showing anything from the third act in the trailer. And it's a risk because that's why the trailer is not that sexy right now.

• 23:59Chris Ryan?

I think that if you were watching three months of Ghostbusters trailer, if Ghostbusters was coming out now, you would have seen sixty-five percent of the good Bill Murray lines in trailers.

• 24:09Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 24:10Chris Ryan?

So you would, you would have seen this chick is toast. Already.

• 24:13Speaker 02

Right. I I also think that like at that point and I was I don't have any memory of Ghostbusters when it came out. I don't remember a time when I didn't know Ghostbusters. Like my relationship to Bill Murray on Saturday Night Live was me going back.

• 24:29Chris Ryan?

  Backwards through Ghostbusters, me too.

• 24:30Speaker 02

Backwards through Ghostbusters for whatever backwards through like uh whatever the the the fucking film is like me going, oh my god, where does this guy get his start? And really like the Eddie Murphy, for me, the Eddie Murphy Saturday Night Live VHS was just a big part of my ability to like appreciate Saturday Night Live. Huh?

• 24:51Bill Simmons?

So I had Murray with the SNL reruns because they show him in primetime.

• 24:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:55Bill Simmons?

Meatballs, Caddyshack, Stripes, Tootsie. And he would pop on Letterman every once in a while, but it was like, well, if that guy's in a comedy, I'm going.

• 25:05Speaker 02

Yeah, like he is, you see his face and you go, I'm gonna have a good time.

• 25:08Bill Simmons?

This is the Picas. It's it's crazy. One of the, I didn't really fully realize this until we did the research. This movie was so big, Murray didn't do another movie for four years.

• 25:18Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 25:19Bill Simmons?

He like got freaked out by how powerful and enormous this became and it made him rethink like everything and Ackroyd wasn't really the same either.

• 25:27Chris Ryan?

He did Razor's Edge before Ghostbusters.

• 25:30Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 25:30Chris Ryan?

That was supposed to be his like, here's my, here's my serious acting.

• 25:33Bill Simmons?

I'm a serious actor as well. Ackroyd did Spies Like Us in eighty-five and dragged that in eighty-seven, pretty rocky after that. Reitman and Ramis, it worked out better for those guys, but um it's pretty, you see this sometimes where something so big that people don't almost know what to do. Like Leo did Titanic and I, what did he make, one movie in the next five years?

• 25:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 25:54Bill Simmons?

Did the beach. Did the beach and that was it.

• 25:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:56Bill Simmons?

They're like, oh shit. Um, post Blues Brothers, Ackroyd was fascinated by the supernatural and quantum physics and parapsychology, all this stuff. And he wanted to trap ghosts and do a movie with him and Belushi trapping ghosts. This was nineteen eighty-one. And he was inspired, I never saw these movies. Sean probably has them on four K. Abner Castello, Hold That Ghost, Bob Hope, The Ghostbreakers, The Bowery Boys, Ghost Chasers. So he wanted to do a comedy ghost movie, but have it rooted in actual research for how this stuff would work. Writing the Belushi scenes for the movie the day Belushi died, like he tells that story in the, in the Bob Woodward book.

• 26:38Bill Simmons?

And then had to audible, didn't know what he was gonna do. It was originally called Ghost Smashers. So he has this whole thing, shows it to Reitman. Reitman's like, this would cost a kajillion dollars.

• 26:48Chris Ryan?

And it was set in the future, I think.

• 26:49Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it was like, he's like, can you put this in earth? So they get Ramis.

• 26:55Bill Simmons?

And they pitch it. So this is why I get dubious with some of the casting what ifs, because Reitman says he goes in, pitches this movie. It's gonna be the three of us, we're gonna rewrite it. They're gonna be the three Ghostbusters, Murray and Ramis and Ackroyd. And we're off. Then there's like a hundred casting what ifs. So I don't, we're gonna go to it later, I don't know what to believe. So they rewrite the movie, they decide Ramis is gonna be the brains, Ackroyd's the heart, Murray's the, Murray's basically the wise ass. And they set it in New York City. And we're good to go, Van.

• 27:25Chris Ryan?

  Done.

• 27:25Bill Simmons?

Do it. And, and it's, by the way, in the Horlbeck scale. Hour forty-five.

• 27:30Chris Ryan?

  Right there. Great. Yeah.

• 27:32Bill Simmons?

I don't even know what I would cut. I think it's kinda perfect.

• 27:34Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I think anything in the hour forty is fine. Just to, just to go back to something Van was saying a little bit. There's something different about this than Stripes and Beverly Hills Cop, to me. Where Stripes and Beverly Hills Cop feels like nineteen seventies scripts. That they were like, this has been kicking around, or like, we have an idea based on something that has already been done.

• 27:57Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 27:57Chris Ryan?

What if Eddie Murphy was the cop? What if Bill Murray was the soldier? And what would we do with that? This feels new. This feels like something that's like, like this and Back to the Future feel like movies that I'm like, I don't think they could have done this in nineteen seventy-six.

• 28:11Bill Simmons?

It's good to bring those together, because those, Back to the Future's the next year.

• 28:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 28:16Bill Simmons?

Those are the two where it's like, I'm sure when they were working on this, they were probably like.

• 28:19Chris Ryan?

  Is this gonna work?

• 28:21Bill Simmons?

Yeah, is this gonna work, but also like, this might be massive?

• 28:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 28:25Bill Simmons?

Because you have a feeling, because you're catching lightning in the bottle with some of the stars. But yeah, it's a, it's a good point, like.

• 28:30Chris Ryan?

But they both have like iconography where you're like the skateboard and, and, you know, the inventing skateboarding, basically. Or like, you know, the, the Ecto One and the jumpsuits and this, where you're like, man, I just feel like th- these guys just. They got six or seven new things and six or seven things that are just a hundred years old and solid, and they put them together to make something nobody had seen before.

• 28:52Speaker 02

And the movie is very eighties. Like, I thought about things this time. She's a concert violinist.

• 28:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, cellist, right?

• 29:01Speaker 02

Like a cellist. Like, she's a concert cellist.

• 29:03Bill Simmons?

And not really addressed or shown at all.

• 29:05Speaker 02

  Not really addressed or shown.

• 29:07Bill Simmons?

  There's no rehearsal?

• 29:07Speaker 02

But she is an artist. She is a woman about her times.

• 29:11Chris Ryan?

  Living in Central Park West.

• 29:12Speaker 02

Living in Central Park West. Like, he walks into it, he goes, "A lot of space in here." She's a successful lady. Her entire independence is upended by the fact that she has an uninvited guest that she can't kick out, which is the ghost. So like, it's almost-

• 29:25Bill Simmons?

  Zool.

• 29:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 29:26Speaker 02

Zool, a meta-commentary on like, the eighties woman. Like, all of the stuff that's happening in the movies, the movies is very eighty, it's very eighties because there's a cultural explosion that's happening around that time that the movie takes advantage of.

• 29:40Bill Simmons?

Murray is on an all-time run that we mentioned. Seventy-nine, eighty-four, Meatballs, Caddyshack, Stripes, Tootsie, Ghostbusters. I mean, Jesus, he's been living off that for forty-two years. The guy can do no wrong. Acryt had Blues Brothers. He did Neighbors and Doctor Detroit between Trading Places and Trading Places, which if we're talking about all these, like, and we've done a lot of them on rewatchables, Trading Places is just a kick-ass conventional movie.

• 30:10Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 30:10Bill Simmons?

With major stars. This movie is a kick-ass movie that had the chance to grow in a different way.

• 30:18Chris Ryan?

Well, you talk about the casting whatevs. Like, Trading Places, there's ten versions of the two guys in Trading Places.

• 30:25Bill Simmons?

And nine of them don't work.

• 30:27Chris Ryan?

With Charles Grodin and Robert De Niro or something like that, you know? Like, you could pick pairs and make a lot of those movies work. You could pick pairs and make Forty-Eight Hours work. Maybe not on the level it does. Beverly Hills Cop, you could find a Detroit cop going to Beverly Hills. I don't know- You look at the casting what ifs, even if you just do a fake fantasy draft of like, who would you want as the four Ghostbusters? There's no way to top this. This is the Beatles.

• 30:53Speaker 02

How much, how many digestible science fiction blockbusters have we had before this? Obviously, Star Wars was a gigantic thing.

• 31:01Bill Simmons?

Because like Alien wasn't a blockbuster.

• 31:03Speaker 02

  Right, I'm talking about.

• 31:04Bill Simmons?

  Alien, Alien's was a blockbuster, I think in 86.

• 31:09Speaker 02

Movies that deal in like paranormal, there's ghost stuff, this film has to play in middle of America. Like, but it's a, it's a science fiction.

• 31:17Bill Simmons?

  Poltergeist, Close Encounters.

• 31:19Speaker 02

Like, those movies are like, were big films. I'm talking about like, in this way, like for comedy, for them to kind of do this version of it.

• 31:27Bill Simmons?

  It's failed a hundred times.

• 31:28Speaker 02

  Right.

• 31:29Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it usually doesn't work. And honestly, I'm not sure how this movie worked.

• 31:34Chris Ryan?

I think this movie works because like, when you go back through it, there are like a hundred lines where I'm like, oh, that is actually now just something I say. And I forgot it came from Ghostbusters. Do you know what I mean? Like an aside that you make routinely.

• 31:49Bill Simmons?

Don't cross the streams actually became like pop culture.

• 31:52Chris Ryan?

I was gonna ask, I was gonna ask if that's, did that come from this movie?

• 31:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 31:56Chris Ryan?

  Like peeing, crossing streams, that?

• 31:58Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 31:58Chris Ryan?

  I don't know.

• 31:59Speaker 02

Don't cross the streams. This, this entire movie is a piece of pop, like the fact that Mythbusters, something is called.

• 32:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, anything busters, yes.

• 32:07Speaker 02

Anything like, anything busters is like, this entire movie is just.

• 32:12Bill Simmons?

Yeah, there's a bunch of those with this.

• 32:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 32:15Bill Simmons?

Sigourney Weaver. Oh, let's, actually, we'll take a break and then I gotta talk about Sigourney Weaver. This episode is brought to you by McDonald's. Right now at McDonald's, you can get great deals all day with McValue. That's right. Jumpstart your day with the under $3 menu featuring a sausage McMuffin for just $1.50. Or grab the perfect lunch with the McDouble for just $2.50. Honestly, nothing pairs with a movie marathon like a McDouble in hand. Gotta love the McDouble's. Get even more value with McValue only at McDonald's. Ba da ba ba ba. Limited time only. Prices and participation may vary. Prices may be higher for delivery.

• 32:59Bill Simmons?

Sigourney Weaver fought for the part.

• 33:03Chris Ryan?

  Smart.

• 33:03Bill Simmons?

They were like, you're a dramatic actress. You went to Yale. We're intimidated by you. You're six feet tall. And she's like, I'm really funny. You gotta try me out. She does, from a ten year span, seventy-nine, eighty-nine, Alien, Ghostbusters, Aliens, and Working Girl, which are four of the biggest movies of that stretch. She was also an eyewitness here, living dangerously, Deal of the Century, Girls in the Mist, and Ghostbusters Two. Stealth case for winning the eighties?

• 33:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:29Bill Simmons?

For female actresses? For actresses? I don't know who else is in there.

• 33:34Chris Ryan?

I'd have to see Meryl Streep's eighties.

• 33:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, Meryl Streep.

• 33:36Bill Simmons?

I don't think she had, she probably had more. I don't, I think.

• 33:40Chris Ryan?

  Not blockbusters.

• 33:40Speaker 02

  Yeah, not blockbusters, yeah.

• 33:41Bill Simmons?

I think Melanie Griffith's probably in there.

• 33:43Speaker 02

  Melanie Griffith's in there.

• 33:44Bill Simmons?

But I think Sigourney has the best mix of like blockbuster with like credibility.

• 33:49Speaker 02

  She has blockbuster.

• 33:49Bill Simmons?

  Meryl Streep has the gold.

• 33:51Speaker 02

She has a, she has rom-com, she has blockbusters, sci-fi stuff. She has a.

• 33:55Bill Simmons?

  It's pretty good.

• 33:55Chris Ryan?

Can I hear Diane Keaton's eighties?

• 33:59Bill Simmons?

  Diane Keaton's eighties that has.

• 34:00Chris Ryan?

  It's like baby boom.

• 34:01Bill Simmons?

I don't think she had it, because some of it's from the seventies. Yeah, it's tough. Well, we already figured out that Rene Russo won the nineties. A few podcasts ago.

• 34:10Chris Ryan?

  Congratulations.

• 34:11Bill Simmons?

Just convincingly, too. Just destroyed everybody.

• 34:13Speaker 02

What's her NBA comp? What's the, what's the really devastatingly effective championship-winning NBA player that nobody remembers how good they were when they were on top of their game?

• 34:21Bill Simmons?

  Sigourney Weaver?

• 34:22Speaker 02

No, I'm talking about Rene Russo.

• 34:24Bill Simmons?

  Oh, Rene Russo.

• 34:25Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 34:26Chris Ryan?

  Rene Russo was a problem.

• 34:27Speaker 02

  Like.

• 34:28Chris Ryan?

  Highlight reel.

• 34:28Speaker 02

  Like, like, yeah.

• 34:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 34:30Speaker 02

Hey, look, look at Rene Russo's back.

• 34:32Bill Simmons?

  It's like nine bangers.

• 34:33Speaker 02

  Nine bangers.

• 34:34Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 34:35Speaker 02

  Not missing.

• 34:36Bill Simmons?

I think she's the second most rewatchables library actress.

• 34:39Chris Ryan?

  She might be.

• 34:40Bill Simmons?

I think it's, it's Meg Ryan and then her, something like that.

• 34:45Bill Simmons?

Yeah, so Sigourney, and then Dave was the only other comedy she did, which ironically was a dive and rent it, but she had a good timing. I don't know, there's, she's so tall, like, if there's other actors that could have been in this that I think it would have been bad.

• 35:00Chris Ryan?

  I mean, just her.

• 35:01Bill Simmons?

Murray's like a relatively tall guy, so you can hang with her.

• 35:03Chris Ryan?

Her three interactions with Moranis are like, they're just funny to look at together.

• 35:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 35:08Chris Ryan?

It's just, it's just like, as soon as he comes out of his apartment, you're like, you gotta be fucking kidding me.

• 35:13Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it looks like Wemby with, like, Stefan Castle.

• 35:18Bill Simmons?

Ray Parker's theme song. Do you have any Sigourney Weaver or you want to save it for later?

• 35:23Speaker 02

Oh, I'll save it for later. I love it.

• 35:24Bill Simmons?

  Okay, okay.

• 35:25Speaker 02

  I love it.

• 35:25Bill Simmons?

I figured, yeah. Ray Parker's theme song, number one for three weeks. The video is number one on MTV. Directed by Reitman. Featured Chevy Chase, John Candy, George Wendt, Danny DeVito, Carly Simon, a million people. And everyone's dancing down the streets of New York City. And they closed Times Square, which they kind of stopped doing after the eighties. And I think Vanilla Sky was like the last, anything that got them to close Times Square.

• 35:49Chris Ryan?

You have to do it now at dawn, but they were probably like three, 3:45 PM. We're just gonna shoot Ghostbusters.

• 35:55Bill Simmons?

So then it turned into this whole scandal with the Huey Lewis song.

• 35:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 35:58Bill Simmons?

  I Want a New Drug.

• 36:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 36:01Bill Simmons?

Which is a what's aged the worst for this movie because uh, there's a lot of research on this. That they wanted Huey Lewis to do the song. They put I Want a New Drug as the temp song in some of the early scenes. And then Ray Parker had a week to write the song. And it really does sound like the same thing. So there's some mystery lawsuit that we've never heard.

• 36:22Chris Ryan?

I think Huey Lewis financially did okay.

• 36:24Bill Simmons?

  I think he did okay.

• 36:25Speaker 02

Yeah. Cause he bounced back like the next year, he did the whole Back to the Future joint.

• 36:29Chris Ryan?

And like he had two albums that sold like 20 million records.

• 36:31Speaker 02

He was the man at that point.

• 36:33Bill Simmons?

You know what? I'm glad we have them both.

• 36:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 36:36Bill Simmons?

It's like having Heather Thomas and Heather Lachlan. We're all winners.

• 36:39Chris Ryan?

  That's right.

• 36:40Bill Simmons?

  Two really good songs.

• 36:41Speaker 02

  Right.

• 36:43Bill Simmons?

There's an incredible what if with this movie that we mentioned earlier about Eddie Murphy. And there's.

• 36:49Chris Ryan?

  A lot of competing journalism.

• 36:51Bill Simmons?

Competing narratives about this. Acroide seems to be adamant that it was for Ghostbusters. And Winston was gonna be Eddie Murphy. And that one adds up to me more because they had just done Trading Places together.

• 37:04Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 37:05Bill Simmons?

  As he's writing Ghostbusters.

• 37:08Bill Simmons?

Also, why wouldn't you want Eddie Murphy in this movie?

• 37:10Chris Ryan?

But Reitman was like, that, that wasn't the case, right?

• 37:13Bill Simmons?

Reitman said, no, no, he was never a serious thing. But I almost felt like he was trying to be nice to Ernie Hudson.

• 37:19Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 37:20Bill Simmons?

I'm gonna believe that they went hard after Eddie Murphy, and I don't know why they wouldn't have.

• 37:24Chris Ryan?

  Of course.

• 37:25Bill Simmons?

And I think it adds up because he had relationships with Murray and Accra. It's almost a new category, Craig. The Eddie Murphy and Ghostbusters Award for biggest what if. Because if he's in this movie from the beginning.

• 37:37Chris Ryan?

  It doesn't work.

• 37:38Bill Simmons?

It breaks my brain. So you think it doesn't work?

• 37:40Chris Ryan?

  It does not work.

• 37:41Speaker 02

Absolutely not, in no way, shape or form.

• 37:44Chris Ryan?

  First of all, like, I, I don't.

• 37:46Bill Simmons?

  Can we talk this out?

• 37:46Chris Ryan?

There's not enough, there's not enough screen for those guys all to be on screen together doing. Like, this movie works because the other guys revolve around Murray.

• 37:57Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 37:57Chris Ryan?

If you have Murphy in there and they're like, let's give Murphy like three scenes where there's no script and he's just allowed to like cook. I just think it starts to blot out the sun a little bit. Like, I, I, I'm sure we would have clips that we were like, that's the fucking funniest thing I've ever seen. But you can't just like, let Eddie Murphy cook at, from the Winston position.

• 38:17Bill Simmons?

So it's just like A.J. Brown and Jalen Hurts?

• 38:19Chris Ryan?

Or A.J. Brown and Drake May.

• 38:21Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 38:23Speaker 02

Um, yeah, it does, it's, it's, when Ernie comes into the movie, he does exactly what he's supposed to.

• 38:28Chris Ryan?

  Exactly.

• 38:28Speaker 02

  He steadies the whole deal.

• 38:31Chris Ryan?

He's a little bit of skepticism.

• 38:32Speaker 02

Little bit of skepticism, little bit of, uh, realness.

• 38:35Bill Simmons?

  He's the everyman.

• 38:36Speaker 02

He's an everyman. Everybody else is all into this absurdist comedy and he's the one like, I need my own lawyer. You know, he, perfect. Eddie, you gotta let him win scenes. Or if you don't let him win, he's going to win them. So it just doesn't work. It's like that weird Lakers team where they had Nash and Howard and Gasol and all of those guys. There's not enough basketball and you got a bad back.

• 38:58Bill Simmons?

You're the same person who thinks Jason Tatum and Jalen Brown can't play together.

• 39:01Speaker 02

  That's what I said.

• 39:03Speaker 02

Said they play better than Browns leading the team.

• 39:06Bill Simmons?

I'm, I'm zagging. I think they could have figured it out. I actually think the upside of the movie is higher and the downside is lower. I'm fine with where we landed because this became an iconic, awesome movie.

• 39:17Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 39:18Bill Simmons?

It's really hard for me to believe that Eddie Murphy in 1984 wouldn't have improved the movie.

• 39:24Chris Ryan?

I don't think it wouldn't have, I don't think it wouldn't have, improving is a weird thing. I just think it wouldn't be what it is. And I think there would be like three scenes where you're like, holy shit, like I can't believe we didn't get more Eddie Murphy.

• 39:35Bill Simmons?

Eddie Murphy talking to ghosts? You're telling me I'm not enjoying that in a movie theater?

• 39:39Speaker 02

But, okay, where's Eddie at in his career at this point?

• 39:42Bill Simmons?

Eddie, Eddie has done 48 Hours Trading Places and he's doing Beverly Hills Cop that comes out the same year.

• 39:47Speaker 02

He's stuffing baby in the corner. You're not gonna get, it's not, it's not gonna, it's not gonna work.

• 39:51Bill Simmons?

So he did a movie called Deal of the Century, ironically. Where he's in, they basically filmed his scene. It, it didn't work. It wasn't a good movie. Um, and he's in it. He kind of pops in and out. So he's like a star, but he's not a star. And I wonder if they did that for this, where he's in basically half the movie as like they're bringing the firepower.

• 40:10Chris Ryan?

I mean, it would be like, it would be really funny if Eddie Murphy played Walter Peck.

• 40:15Bill Simmons?

  Oh, just for like.

• 40:16Chris Ryan?

Is it Richard Peck or Walter Peck?

• 40:17Bill Simmons?

  No, it's Walter Peck.

• 40:18Chris Ryan?

Walter Peck, like if he just had like two scenes, two scenes.

• 40:22Bill Simmons?

Well, it's a what if, because he could have gone 48 Hours Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop and Ghostbusters in three years. That would have shut it down.

• 40:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, too much.

• 40:30Chris Ryan?

That also would have been pretty funny to watch Eddie Murphy in Ghostbusters 2.

• 40:34Bill Simmons?

Oh, he would have done it.

• 40:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:36Bill Simmons?

He would have been available. Wow, I'm surprised you guys weren't more receptive to this. You're really protective of the four Ghostbusters.

• 40:41Chris Ryan?

Well, to me, this is a perfect film. Like, I, I just think that like you start to mess with the, the notation of the music and it, it changes the tune a little bit.

• 40:49Bill Simmons?

Craig, would you have wanted Eddie Murphy in this?

• 40:51Speaker 03

I get what they're saying. I, I think it would have worked if maybe he had like a, a guest spot type role where he just came in and like Dion Waiters to two big scenes and then got out.

• 41:01Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 41:01Speaker 03

I don't know if he could have been in the whole movie.

• 41:04Speaker 02

Another thing, to me, the movie is oriented around the comedic tone and stylings.

• 41:10Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 41:10Speaker 02

Of, uh, Bill Murray and Eddie Murphy does his comedy in a different way.

• 41:15Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 41:15Speaker 03

Also, I think, I always thought the Winston character like didn't make any sense. That felt like they were four, I feel like he didn't have a ton to do.

• 41:23Speaker 03

To be honest, it felt like a token casting.

• 41:25Speaker 02

  Wow, interesting.

• 41:26Speaker 03

  You don't think so?

• 41:27Speaker 02

You don't want us, we can't bust ghosts?

• 41:29Speaker 03

Put him in the beginning of the movie then.

• 41:31Speaker 02

Yeah, oh, so now you've gone the other way.

• 41:33Bill Simmons?

He wants him to be a scientist as well.

• 41:35Speaker 03

I'm like, what do we, we just jammed him in there. He didn't have a ton to do.

• 41:37Speaker 02

We're on the same woke tale. I got something to say about that.

• 41:39Bill Simmons?

I have more of this later.

• 41:40Chris Ryan?

This is way more work than we thought it was gonna be.

• 41:42Speaker 03

It just felt like they bailed on that storyline.

• 41:44Chris Ryan?

I think it's a really nice, like, we gotta bring somebody off the bench in the middle of the movie.

• 41:48Speaker 02

  I think the reason why.

• 41:49Bill Simmons?

  Could have been Eddie Murphy.

• 41:53Bill Simmons?

  Funniest person alive in 1984.

• 41:55Speaker 03

Yeah, but I just feel like we could go through like these movies that were just like, you know what would be good is if Tom Cruise showed up in Cidic. Why can't Tom Cruise be the vampire?

• 42:02Bill Simmons?

But in this case, he really was supposed to be the fourth Ghostbuster.

• 42:06Chris Ryan?

Sure, and I think that like Ernie Hudson's sometimes acrimonious relationship to this movie, like at various points where he's been like, well, the script, like, is a much bigger part in the script that I read. I wonder if that was for Eddie. I wonder if they wrote it thinking we might get Eddie.

• 42:21Bill Simmons?

All kinds of research on that with, uh, whether it was a much bigger part that got cut down once they realized Ernie Hudson was in it, or what was going on.

• 42:31Bill Simmons?

This movie was nominated for two Oscars. Best song, best visual effects. Elmer Bernstein's score not nominated. Very good, though. We were, what's the Horrableback scale? A hundred minutes?

• 42:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:44Bill Simmons?

  So we're plus five.

• 42:46Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's fine, though.

• 42:47Bill Simmons?

  It's amazing.

• 42:47Speaker 03

If it's in the hour 40s range, it's fine.

• 42:50Bill Simmons?

Okay, 30 million dollar budget made 298 million dollars.

• 42:54Chris Ryan?

In 1984, so adjusted, that's like a bill, right?

• 42:56Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Second biggest film of 84. Biggest comedy ever at the time, which lasted only a few weeks, and then Beverly's Cop took that. Number one for seven straight weeks, kicked off the number one list by a little movie called Purple Rain. We still knew how to make things in America.

• 43:15Chris Ryan?

  We sure did.

• 43:16Bill Simmons?

We fucking knew what we were doing in 1984.

• 43:18Speaker 02

  Purify yourself.

• 43:18Bill Simmons?

It's like, sorry, Ghostbusters, Prince is here.

• 43:22Chris Ryan?

I'm sure you're gonna get to Raj in a second. I had a quote from, just reading up about this, that I thought really summed it up. Judd Apatow said, "It really is a perfect comedy. It was all those people at the height of their powers. They had mastered their craft and made the film we dreamed they'd make. Movies like Ghostbusters made us want to make movies."

• 43:44Bill Simmons?

  No notes.

• 43:46Bill Simmons?

Raj went three and a half stars.

• 43:48Chris Ryan?

  See?

• 43:50Bill Simmons?

He docked it a half star for recent.

• 43:52Chris Ryan?

  Because nobody Murphy.

• 43:54Bill Simmons?

He said, rarely has a movie this expensive provided so many quotable lines. And he said Ghostbusters is one of those rare movies where the original fragile comic vision has survived a multimillion dollar production.

• 44:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 44:07Bill Simmons?

  Good way to put it.

• 44:08Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 44:10Bill Simmons?

Want to go to the scenes?

• 44:11Chris Ryan?

  Let's go.

• 44:12Speaker 02

  Let's do it.

• 44:12Bill Simmons?

Most rewatchable is gonna be interesting. Most rewatchable scene. Venkman working ESP with the two kids and favoring the blonde is so fucking funny.

• 44:22Chris Ryan?

Studying the neg- the effect of negative reinforcement on ESP.

• 44:28Chris Ryan?

  We're paying you, aren't you?

• 44:29Speaker 02

  For five bucks.

• 44:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 44:31Bill Simmons?

Do you know a movie that the guy was in in that scene? You didn't recognize him?

• 44:35Speaker 02

  I didn't.

• 44:36Bill Simmons?

You might be the only one who's seen this movie.

• 44:38Speaker 02

  What?

• 44:38Bill Simmons?

  Actually, CR might have. Christine.

• 44:41Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 44:43Bill Simmons?

He was one of the two bad guys.

• 44:44Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, he sure was.

• 44:46Bill Simmons?

He and that other guy Buddy.

• 44:49Chris Ryan?

And Jennifer Runyon is the, is the woman?

• 44:51Bill Simmons?

  Jennifer Runyon.

• 44:52Speaker 02

  Yeah. Beautiful hair.

• 44:54Bill Simmons?

I think Christine, one of the 10 worst movies I've seen the most. It's really awful.

• 44:59Speaker 02

Yeah, it's hard for me to-

• 45:00Bill Simmons?

I think I've seen it at least 20 times.

• 45:01Speaker 02

I've seen it a bunch too. It's hard for me to view it as bad, but it's-

• 45:05Chris Ryan?

Those Stephen King movies back there, them were kind of game.

• 45:07Bill Simmons?

  I liked all of them.

• 45:08Chris Ryan?

I mean, Maximum Overdrive is still my dream rewatchable.

• 45:11Bill Simmons?

Even Stephen King didn't like the Stephen King movies. And I'm like, sign me up, Cujo. Did you see me trapped in a car for 45 minutes?

• 45:17Chris Ryan?

Have you ever seen Maximum Overdrive?

• 45:18Bill Simmons?

  Uh-uh.

• 45:19Chris Ryan?

It's Stephen King directed it while high on cocaine.

• 45:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, say no more.

• 45:23Chris Ryan?

Uh, stars Emilio Estevez and is about machines taking over the world.

• 45:27Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 45:27Speaker 02

  Wait a minute.

• 45:28Bill Simmons?

  It's batshit crazy.

• 45:29Speaker 02

  I did see this.

• 45:29Chris Ryan?

Yeah, and it's set at a truck stop in North Carolina.

• 45:31Speaker 02

Yeah, I did see this. It's like, oh no, I'm thinking of Repo Man.

• 45:33Bill Simmons?

I don't want to do cocaine month for the rewatchables. I want to do cocaine year.

• 45:37Speaker 02

  Right.

• 45:38Bill Simmons?

Just 52 movies where everybody was out of their mind.

• 45:42Chris Ryan?

It's 2028, leading into the presidential election. It's cocaine year.

• 45:45Bill Simmons?

Cocaine year. Next rewatchable scene, the fellas go to the library and get spooked.

• 45:51Chris Ryan?

My uncle thought he was Saint Jerome.

• 45:55Bill Simmons?

This, a couple of movies have done a really good job of nailing how creepy libraries are.

• 46:02Bill Simmons?

The wrong kind of time of day of a big sprawling library, you just feel like something awful could happen.

• 46:08Speaker 02

Any place where there are a lot of people in it, but you're supposed to be quiet feels odd.

• 46:13Bill Simmons?

Yeah, good point. Sigourney with the groceries, AKA Dana. We get the Ghostbusters commercial on TV at this point.

• 46:20Chris Ryan?

We are ready to believe you.

• 46:21Bill Simmons?

We're ready to believe you. Really good special effects with the eggs, and I think we should have mentioned this at the top. For 1984, some of the special effects were excellent, like really good. Like we have eggs frying on a counter. And in 1984 going, wow, how are they doing that?

• 46:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 46:36Bill Simmons?

Now it'd be like, you know, they could do anything in that.

• 46:39Chris Ryan?

One of the biggest picking nits of the entire movie to me still is a woman like Dana buying a giant bag of marshmallows.

• 46:46Bill Simmons?

Interesting. You think she was gonna make Rice Krispie treats or something?

• 46:50Chris Ryan?

Oh, like for her orchestra or something like I don't know.

• 46:53Bill Simmons?

  She was getting down?

• 46:53Speaker 02

  And a, we getting marshmallows?

• 46:55Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 46:56Speaker 02

  Yeah. Sexual food item?

• 47:02Chris Ryan?

  He's appealing directly to you.

• 47:05Bill Simmons?

Trying to send Vance Valium sometimes.

• 47:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:07Bill Simmons?

I think she would have cleaned the eggs up.

• 47:09Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 47:10Bill Simmons?

Eggs were on the counter for like two days.

• 47:12Speaker 02

Well, she didn't want to clean them because she was gonna go get the Ghostbusters to come back and check them out.

• 47:15Chris Ryan?

  There's evidence. That's true.

• 47:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:18Bill Simmons?

Venkman gets slimed in the banquet room.

• 47:22Bill Simmons?

That's great. Actual physical contact. Save me some. This is where we get the don't cross the streams. This is where we get the we came, we saw, we conquered. He veers into Nick the Lounge Singer and Carl from Caddyshack a little bit.

• 47:39Bill Simmons?

This is my favorite scene, my most rewatchable. Right after that, the most 80s movie montage you could possibly have.

• 47:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:48Chris Ryan?

  So good.

• 47:49Bill Simmons?

Ray Parker song kicks in. Cuba Lewis's lawyers immediately go to work.

• 47:55Bill Simmons?

We get Roger Grimsley, the Live at Five anchor in New York City.

• 47:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 47:59Bill Simmons?

Roger Grimsby. Uh, we get early Larry King. We get a USA Today, Ghost Fever grips New York. We get Time Magazine Omni in the Atlantic. We get the soothing towns of, sounds of Casey Kasem.

• 48:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 48:13Bill Simmons?

We get the Joe Franklin Show.

• 48:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 48:16Bill Simmons?

We get the Globe with a Princess Di expecting again. Um, and this is clearly the Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happiness. Best needle drop, but it just makes me so happy to watch this.

• 48:26Chris Ryan?

Yeah, this is, this is like the serotonin hit. This is like legal ecstasy. If you watch this, you're like, goddamn.

• 48:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 48:34Chris Ryan?

  It was just the best.

• 48:35Bill Simmons?

The only thing missing is Pacino in Cruising, just dancing. Just dancing leather jacket.

• 48:41Chris Ryan?

  Chloroform it, mind of, yeah.

• 48:43Bill Simmons?

Maybe when we do the social clip, we could run the montage, but then work in Pacino.

• 48:47Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 48:48Bill Simmons?

The leather outfit. Uh, Rick Moranis's party?

• 48:51Speaker 02

  Love it.

• 48:53Bill Simmons?

  Supposedly mostly ad libbed.

• 48:55Speaker 02

Uh, he introduces people by their financial situations and come in the door.

• 48:58Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 48:59Speaker 02

Has the blonde who, I mean, I know he's pining over Sigourney Weaver and Sigourney Weaver looks better.

• 49:07Bill Simmons?

You like Gene Kasem, the blonde?

• 49:08Speaker 02

  I like.

• 49:08Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 49:08Bill Simmons?

Have a little run on Cheers.

• 49:09Chris Ryan?

  Casey's girlfriend, yeah.

• 49:10Bill Simmons?

  Casey Kasem's wife.

• 49:12Chris Ryan?

Moranis coming out going, hey, this is real smoked salmon from Nova Scotia, Canada. Twenty-four ninety-five a pound. Only cost me fourteen dollars, twelve cents after tax, though. I'm thinking this whole thing as a promotional expense. That's why I invited clients instead of friends. You having a good time, Mark? How you doing? Why don't you have some breeze at room temperature? He's like, fucking.

• 49:32Speaker 02

  Going.

• 49:32Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I was just like, he's sort of a hat trick in the first period.

• 49:36Bill Simmons?

Well, weren't his guys Bob and, Bob and Dave?

• 49:38Chris Ryan?

Bob and Elaine, yeah. They have, like, wait, the one where they come in and they're like.

• 49:42Bill Simmons?

No, the, the SCTV, the, he did.

• 49:44Chris Ryan?

Oh, yeah. Uh, the, uh, the fucking brothers.

• 49:47Bill Simmons?

  The Brothers, the Mackenzie Brothers.

• 49:49Chris Ryan?

  Mackenzie Brothers, yeah.

• 49:50Bill Simmons?

He's doing a combo of that, but there's a little Garth from Wayne's World in there too, where he's kind of like talking inside of his mouth. We didn't talk about Moranis. What's your relationship with him?

• 49:59Chris Ryan?

Obviously this limited by the fact that he doesn't do a ton after Honey, I Shrunk the Kids, right? He like basically disappears.

• 50:05Bill Simmons?

  Now he kinda disappeared.

• 50:06Chris Ryan?

But this is a performance worthy of considering renaming the Dion Waiters Award after him.

• 50:12Speaker 02

  Going nuts.

• 50:14Chris Ryan?

Just absolute, like, he plays like two different characters in this and they are both among the funniest things I've ever seen in my life. Him as Vince Clortho, him as Louis Tully, and then Sneaky, him as Louis Tully again at the end.

• 50:28Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 50:30Chris Ryan?

  Who does your taxes?

• 50:33Speaker 02

Lovable and hilarious, like, I don't know, man. So.

• 50:37Chris Ryan?

Want to come in and get a mineral water?

• 50:40Speaker 02

Like, you see him at first, he's gotta be in the scene where you see him, he's gotta be a little bit of a pest.

• 50:45Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 50:46Speaker 02

But he's gotta be lovable enough.

• 50:47Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 50:48Speaker 02

To where later on in the movie, you're gonna feel like a sense of danger, cuz he's been possessed, you're gonna have to be happy.

• 50:53Bill Simmons?

Well, it seems like he dies when he goes against the window.

• 50:56Chris Ryan?

  Right, yeah.

• 50:56Bill Simmons?

It seems like that's it for him, and then he comes back.

• 50:58Speaker 02

And then they just give him a scene where it's just like, we have Rick Moranis in this movie, you know Rick Moranis, let me, let us show you how funny he is.

• 51:05Bill Simmons?

Honey, I Shrunk the Kids was a massive movie. Do you know the premise of that, Craig?

• 51:08Chris Ryan?

Oh, I loved it as a kid.

• 51:09Bill Simmons?

Yeah. He was a major star.

• 51:11Speaker 02

Major star. He does Little Giants, Little Giants is the last time I remember watching it.

• 51:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, I loved Little Giants.

• 51:17Speaker 02

And he plays a straight man in that one a little bit.

• 51:19Bill Simmons?

Reminds me of little Joe Anderson. Didn't totally want it. Just liked his life.

• 51:24Speaker 02

  Oh my.

• 51:25Bill Simmons?

Didn't want to move to LA.

• 51:26Speaker 02

  Jesus.

• 51:26Bill Simmons?

  Wanted to stay there.

• 51:27Speaker 02

Just wanted to stay in Maryland, huh?

• 51:29Bill Simmons?

Yeah, liked his life. Rick Moranis, just liked his life.

• 51:32Chris Ryan?

I thought he got out of acting because his wife got sick or something. I don't, I mean, I'm just saying, like, he doesn't have, like, a million parts, like, my relationship to Moranis is, like, you made six great movies. Is that right, though? I believe so, yeah.

• 51:43Speaker 02

Something he do, he wanted to raise his kids and like all that, just, you know.

• 51:47Bill Simmons?

Next scene. Are you the key master? Sigourney.

• 51:53Bill Simmons?

  You wanna do this now?

• 51:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 51:54Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 51:55Speaker 02

  Absolute, listen.

• 51:58Speaker 02

  Okay. So.

• 52:00Bill Simmons?

I'm gonna have a glass of water.

• 52:01Speaker 02

  Alright, so look.

• 52:02Chris Ryan?

What's, what, what are we doing?

• 52:04Speaker 02

We're just, we're asking, we're asking the question.

• 52:07Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah, that's Catherine Trammell.

• 52:09Speaker 02

Right, okay. We're asking a question now, we're asking a question. You knock on the door, she asks you to be the key master. You come in.

• 52:18Bill Simmons?

  Van's like, I am.

• 52:20Speaker 02

Like, yeah, that's what he did, right?

• 52:21Bill Simmons?

I am the key master, actually.

• 52:22Speaker 02

And then you, you watch him go through that scene and he's a perfect gentleman. Venkman is a good guy. Cause he comes off like a sleaze bag in every other scene. But he knows that it's not her.

• 52:33Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:34Speaker 02

He is a pre-two consent master.

• 52:36Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 52:37Speaker 02

Is what he is, Venkman is. Venkman goes, cause he actually, he's playing it on himself, he's like, oh, maybe, why not? Why not? But he can't, he can't do it. This has been a question in my family for a long time. Whether or not.

• 52:52Chris Ryan?

You take a shot at Possessed Dana.

• 52:53Speaker 02

Take a shot at Possessed Dana right there. Cause you don't know. May, do you take a shot at it?

• 52:58Chris Ryan?

We also don't know if your sexual sacrifice spares everybody this whole occult Gozer, the Gozerian situation in the first place.

• 53:05Bill Simmons?

You also don't know what the sex is gonna be like. I mean, that'd be the big sticker for me.

• 53:10Chris Ryan?

Yeah, that gets into species territory.

• 53:11Bill Simmons?

  That could, yeah.

• 53:15Bill Simmons?

Yeah, you're going into Natasha Henstridge in the hotel room level.

• 53:19Speaker 03

Can I do my flex now? Cause it's related.

• 53:21Bill Simmons?

  Let's do it.

• 53:22Speaker 03

The Mallory, and this wasn't even in the doc, cause you didn't think anybody would bring this up. The Mallory Rubin Award for Did This Movie Need A Better Sex Scene? It's not Weaver and Murray. It's Weaver and Moranis. We needed a Natasha Henstridge style.

• 53:36Bill Simmons?

  On the roof?

• 53:37Speaker 03

Yeah. Cause he's the actual key master.

• 53:40Chris Ryan?

  He is.

• 53:40Speaker 03

  And we see him after.

• 53:42Chris Ryan?

I think it's implied that they did.

• 53:43Speaker 03

Oh, for sure. We see him kind of in the afterglow. I wanted to, I mean, it can be like clothes on, that's fine, you can, no nudity, but I wanted to see her just, like, cause like, just the physical difference between the two of them, I think that would have taken their relationship to the next level if we actually got to see her on top of him, just tearing him down.

• 53:59Bill Simmons?

  Wow.

• 54:00Speaker 03

  It would have been amazing.

• 54:01Bill Simmons?

  Wow, R-rated Ghostbusters.

• 54:02Speaker 03

  No, you are.

• 54:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, see Craig.

• 54:04Speaker 02

  Minto that.

• 54:05Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 54:06Speaker 02

He's got it in there. Yeah. It went the way it should've gone, though. You can't do it. She's possessed.

• 54:11Chris Ryan?

  Can't do it.

• 54:12Speaker 02

  She's possessed.

• 54:13Chris Ryan?

  Can't do it.

• 54:15Bill Simmons?

There is no Dana, only Zoo.

• 54:19Chris Ryan?

He pumps her full of Thorazine.

• 54:21Bill Simmons?

Uh, next scene, the spirits get loose in New York City, thanks to that asshole Walter Peck. Just fucking unleashes everybody. Classic politician.

• 54:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:35Bill Simmons?

I set you up for a follow-up joke.

• 54:37Speaker 02

I don't know what you, what you.

• 54:39Chris Ryan?

  Classic politician's stuff.

• 54:41Bill Simmons?

  I thought, yeah.

• 54:44Bill Simmons?

It's fine, it's fine. The big ending, I don't even know what to make of. Where do these stairs go? They go up?

• 54:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 54:51Bill Simmons?

  The choice is made.

• 54:53Chris Ryan?

I love this plan. I'm excited to be a part of it.

• 54:57Bill Simmons?

  Did you make a choice?

• 55:00Bill Simmons?

  The blown out building balcony.

• 55:04Bill Simmons?

Um, which I mentioned makes me anxious. And then the whole staple of marshmallow man thing just should not have worked.

• 55:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, and it's amazing.

• 55:10Bill Simmons?

Ackroyd is great in that scene. When they're like, did you, did you? And he's just like.

• 55:16Speaker 02

The, the thing that I laughed at this time was, they go, you think about who you're, whatever is, who's gonna bring up. And then they go, the decision has been made, like, right away. Because he's thinking about the staple of marshmallow man. The, the comic timing of him not being able to clear his mind. Just hysterical. And then he right away knows that he's fucked up and he checks out.

• 55:35Bill Simmons?

If it had been Van and he was in, and it would have just been like a, a 100 foot Lisa Bonet from Angel Heart.

• 55:42Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 55:43Bill Simmons?

Just walking through the streets of New York City.

• 55:45Speaker 02

He was working on twerking down buildings. Yeah, what the fuck?

• 55:48Chris Ryan?

  Oh, God.

• 55:49Bill Simmons?

Uh, that also has, they finally decide they should cross the streams.

• 55:53Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 55:54Bill Simmons?

Great idea. And then I mentioned the closing credits were just immense amount of fun. Uh, what do you have for most rewatchable?

• 56:00Chris Ryan?

I have two you didn't mention.

• 56:01Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 56:01Chris Ryan?

One, the first time Peter goes to Dana's apartment with the turkey baster.

• 56:05Bill Simmons?

  Yep.

• 56:06Chris Ryan?

And he's just like playing the piano. He's like, loves to torture him. It's Dr. Venkman, boys! Uh, that, and then the jail, uh, the jail scene where all the prisoners gather around.

• 56:17Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 56:18Chris Ryan?

Going into the mayor's office with, with Peck and.

• 56:22Bill Simmons?

I felt like that was the Trading Places jail.

• 56:24Chris Ryan?

  I loved it.

• 56:25Bill Simmons?

They just shot it in the same.

• 56:26Chris Ryan?

  Just all the guys.

• 56:27Bill Simmons?

The same guys. Yeah, they just ran about.

• 56:28Chris Ryan?

  Somebody's coming!

• 56:32Chris Ryan?

But yeah, I mean, like, the whole thing with, when Peck and Venkman are squaring off in front of the mayor. Uh, but the, the, the real rewatchable scene is the fame montage.

• 56:41Speaker 02

Um, so the open to me. The first thing you see are the ghosts. The movie sets up like what the actual star of the movie is.

• 56:49Chris Ryan?

  Yes, yeah.

• 56:49Speaker 02

First thing you see are the ghosts.

• 56:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 56:51Speaker 02

Like before you get to Venkman, it shows the library and you get the actual haunting. Cause it's gotta put you in the world. So I think that's very important. Uh, but you know what I always loved? The first call. The first call they ever get, which is actually filmed in the Biltmore downtown LA.

• 57:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 57:09Speaker 02

Yeah. And like, but the first call they get where they're in there and it's Slimer. To me, that's my favorite scene of the movie.

• 57:15Chris Ryan?

When she's like, we got one?

• 57:17Speaker 02

Yeah. Well, we got one. They go there and they're like actually using their equipment for the first time. It's like almost the Ghostbusters origin story scene. God bless you.

• 57:25Chris Ryan?

  Bless you.

• 57:26Speaker 02

That's my favorite scene in the movie.

• 57:27Bill Simmons?

We should probably go to the Biltmore and do like a whole video shoot. I feel like the Biltmore's come up in 12 rewatchables movies.

• 57:34Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 57:35Bill Simmons?

Didn't it just come up in To Live and Die in L.A. or am I crazy?

• 57:37Chris Ryan?

I think the Biltmore is where they do the, the guy jumping off the roof in To Live and Die in L.A.

• 57:42Bill Simmons?

Was that, was that where they did the elevator?

• 57:45Chris Ryan?

That's, uh, the, um, that's in the line of fire that is the elevator.

• 57:49Speaker 02

When you go there, it's awesome because they obviously have all of those movies.

• 57:52Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 57:53Speaker 02

Up there. So you can see that they were shot there.

• 57:55Bill Simmons?

What's the most 1984 thing about this movie? Um, I think the winner of this is the Ghostbusters montage. But I think we should talk about some other ones.

• 58:05Chris Ryan?

Larry King taking radio calls while smoking.

• 58:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Larry King, definitely.

• 58:10Chris Ryan?

This is actually where people ask like, Chris, what's your ambition? And I'm like, I want Bill to give me a drive time call in radio show that I could smoke during.

• 58:19Bill Simmons?

  There you go. Done.

• 58:23Speaker 03

You're live on Drive Time with CR.

• 58:25Bill Simmons?

Hey, AJ Brown. What's up with that guy?

• 58:27Speaker 03

Chris, what's going on with the streetlights? I hate it. I love it.

• 58:34Speaker 03

These potholes, what are they gonna do about it? Thanks for making my call.

• 58:37Bill Simmons?

What do they do with all this copper, CR? Um, I have for an 1984 runner's up, Accroyd's video camera.

• 58:46Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm. Oh, it's from 1984.

• 58:49Bill Simmons?

See the Twin Towers a couple of times in this, which is tough. Jean Kasem?

• 58:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 58:55Bill Simmons?

It's just, this was like her moment between this and Cheers and being married to Casey.

• 58:59Chris Ryan?

So what was the deal here? Like, they wanted to use Casey Kasem's voice and Jean Kasem is part of it?

• 59:03Bill Simmons?

He's probably like, "I'll do your movie if you put my wife in the movie."

• 59:09Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:11Chris Ryan?

Not that she can't act, I'm just asking.

• 59:13Bill Simmons?

My favorite runner up for this, though, is calling someone a pencil neck. It's like that's been gone for thirty-eight years.

• 59:18Speaker 02

You piss a dick, get us out of here, yeah.

• 59:19Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that was like, that peaked in the eighties. Haven't heard pencil neck in a long time.

• 59:23Speaker 02

I got a couple. One, uh, there are Ghostbusters and they immediately are asked about Elvis. No one has any clue in the mid-eighties how big of a fucking deal Elvis's death and potentially being alive still was.

• 59:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:39Speaker 02

Everybody was talking about it all the time on the front of every national acquirer. Somebody saw Elvis in West Virginia with a honky-tonk band.

• 59:45Bill Simmons?

It's like all the deaths from the last fifteen years that were massive just combined into one death. It was Elvis.

• 59:51Speaker 02

  Uh, Tribeca being fucked up.

• 59:54Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 59:55Chris Ryan?

That downtown being all fucked up.

• 59:56Speaker 02

Goes into there and goes, he says, "The neighborhood is like a demilitarized zone."

• 1:00:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:01Speaker 02

Like Tommy Alter has a bar that he likes to go to that legitimately is right across the street from this Ghostbusters.

• 1:00:08Chris Ryan?

  On Varick?

• 1:00:09Speaker 02

Yeah, like right there, you can see the thing, it's right there. Area's fucking beautiful. What, we go there? When I'm in New York, me and Tommy and other people, we have a friend that lives there.

• 1:00:18Bill Simmons?

I was gonna do my Tommy impersonation. I don't know if I should do that on the Rewatchables.

• 1:00:22Chris Ryan?

  What is it?

• 1:00:24Bill Simmons?

What's the name of the bar?

• 1:00:25Speaker 02

I can't, well, I can't remember the name of the bar, I really can't. Well, maybe it's Walkers? Is it called Walkers?

• 1:00:28Chris Ryan?

  Oh, Walkers, sure, yeah.

• 1:00:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's Walkers.

• 1:00:30Bill Simmons?

I was at Walkers last night with Cooper Hoffman. He does the pause, cause he says the first name, but then remembers that you probably don't know who it is. So it's like, I was doing Rewatchables with Chris Ryan.

• 1:00:42Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:00:44Bill Simmons?

  It's my Tommy Alter impersonation.

• 1:00:45Speaker 02

  Hey, Ben's on his way.

• 1:00:46Bill Simmons?

  Still. Still.

• 1:00:48Speaker 02

  Tommy Alter.

• 1:00:49Bill Simmons?

We're gonna run into Jalen Brunson later.

• 1:00:51Speaker 02

Yeah. Uh, and the last one, nineteen eighty-four, the EPA in this movie are the bad guys.

• 1:00:57Chris Ryan?

That's come back around, kind of, yeah.

• 1:00:59Speaker 02

  I guess, actually, I guess.

• 1:01:02Bill Simmons?

• 1:01:40Bill Simmons?

All right. What's age the best? We mentioned don't cross the streams, which is 42 years and counting.

• 1:01:48Bill Simmons?

Phenomenal New York City movie. We did New York City month last, last year and we didn't do Ghostbusters. Cause I wanted to do it this year for some reason, but uh, I just love how they use every aspect of the city. Yeah. And even like that high shot, when you can look down at Central Park and you see all the trees and just like,

• 1:02:10Bill Simmons?

it's just great. I love the, the even seeing people like uh, Joe Franklin in there and I just. When uh, Stay Puft is walking around and uh, all the cabs and shit are getting into car accidents. I think that's Columbus Circle, but I'm just like, yeah, this is great. How the fuck did they do this? Like. Sunny every day. It's just a happy sunny movie.

• 1:02:29Speaker 02

There's no weather, but like the, even in Ghostbusters 2, like New York, how can I say this? Like the ethos of New York is a character of the movie. It seems like a story that could only take place in New York.

• 1:02:42Bill Simmons?

Yeah. What do you have for what's age the best? You know, I actually, this is, what's age the best is kind of funny because sometimes I'm just like these lines, but this is a couple of these, the logo, the firehouse, the ectomobile, the marshmallow man.

• 1:02:58Chris Ryan?

These are forty plus years, like if you see that, you're like Ghostbusters instantly. Like, and it like they are indelible pop culture symbols still, and the uniforms. So, still, kids are still doing this for Halloween. It got brought back during Stranger Things, I think. It's just like a couple of really, really, really durable pop culture icons from this movie.

• 1:03:20Speaker 02

The proton packs I have because they are so signature to the Ghostbusters, proton packs. Also, the brands. In this movie, they got Cheez-It, Coca-Cola, Perrier. All of this shit is still around. He's eating Cheez-Its, she's got Perrier in there. Coca-Cola, I mean, obviously Coca-Cola is gonna be around forever.

• 1:03:40Bill Simmons?

The Cheez-Its made me want Cheez-Its.

• 1:03:41Speaker 02

  Maybe want Cheez-Its.

• 1:03:42Chris Ryan?

This guy's drinking canned Budweiser, maybe want a canned Budweiser.

• 1:03:46Speaker 02

Like, all of the stuff that they're snackable.

• 1:03:47Bill Simmons?

Do you think that was paid or not?

• 1:03:48Speaker 02

I don't know. That's what I was trying to think. They didn't really, that was a big deal, obviously, in the eighties, it still is, but they didn't linger on it.

• 1:03:54Bill Simmons?

Because by the end of the eighties, they were doing it.

• 1:03:55Speaker 02

  All the time, yeah.

• 1:03:57Chris Ryan?

I also had the, um, a nice element to this movie. It's like got very little backstory. Don't really, you don't know where Venkman comes from, you don't really, like, none of, like, their past, kind of, like, childhood trauma or anything like that. But their financial peril is like very acute in the first half of this movie when, uh, Ackroyd takes out the loan and Bill Murray goes, "You're not gonna lose the house. Everybody has three mortgages," he says. He's like, "Yeah, but at nineteen percent, you didn't even bargain with the guy."

• 1:04:26Speaker 02

That's another thing that's age the best, high interest rates, nineteen percent.

• 1:04:30Bill Simmons?

That would have been good for the nineteen eighty-four section. I forgot to put that in.

• 1:04:36Bill Simmons?

Yes, it's true, the man has no dick.

• 1:04:40Bill Simmons?

It's still fucking funny, all these years later. It's like one of the, what's our line delivery one, the Jesse Eisenberg?

• 1:04:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:46Bill Simmons?

That's in the running for best line delivery.

• 1:04:48Chris Ryan?

I mean, that's like the entire Murray performance.

• 1:04:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:53Bill Simmons?

The original SNL generation popping in movies with each other, which is basically Blues Brothers, Caddyshack, Trading Places, Ghostbusters, Spies Like Us, were probably the big ones.

• 1:05:02Speaker 02

When did that stop? I was just having a conversation at Sycamore about Coneheads and about all of the movies that were made around.

• 1:05:09Bill Simmons?

  Some of the bad ones.

• 1:05:10Speaker 02

Like, because there are some bad ones, right? And there's some ones that are underrated.

• 1:05:13Bill Simmons?

A lot of drugs back then.

• 1:05:14Speaker 02

But when did the era of SNL people?

• 1:05:17Chris Ryan?

I mean, in Sandler's world, it hasn't ended.

• 1:05:20Speaker 02

  Well, yeah.

• 1:05:21Bill Simmons?

Sandler was the next one to do, and then Apatow, who learned from both generations, blew it out and just was like.

• 1:05:27Chris Ryan?

  But they're not SNL.

• 1:05:28Bill Simmons?

No, but it's the Apatow generation of, these are my extended crew. We're all gonna be in movies with each other and.

• 1:05:35Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it's like late 90s, early aughts with like Austin Powers and the Happy Gilmore. It goes up to Bridesmaids.

• 1:05:40Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:40Chris Ryan?

I was saying with SNL, oh, I guess Bridesmaids, yeah, SNL, yeah.

• 1:05:43Bill Simmons?

Speaking of Apatow, um, this movie's pretty legendary for all the improv and all the ad-libbing and stuff.

• 1:05:48Chris Ryan?

So this is another thing that I saw a lot of debate about, like, how much, how much is written versus how much is improv, so go ahead.

• 1:05:55Bill Simmons?

Yeah, well, I think it did influence comedies because I think everything was pretty rigid with, there's the script, say your lines, here's the written jokes. In Caddyshack, they ad-libbed a lot, but it was mostly because they didn't have a script. Um, but I think in this one, he was encouraging, Reidman was encouraging the people to explore the studio space with different scenes. And then I think in the 2000s, that really took off.

• 1:06:19Speaker 02

Well, it's also these guys' idea.

• 1:06:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:21Speaker 02

  So being it's their idea.

• 1:06:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, they're writers.

• 1:06:23Chris Ryan?

And they know who Murray is.

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

Yeah, they know what to do with it.

• 1:06:25Chris Ryan?

There was like a quote, Ackroyd had had some quote where he was like, the script is mostly structure and exposition and a lot of the dialogue is like Murray cooking, but then the shooting script is all the lines. But I guess there are like a lot of alts where like Murray's throwing out like three or four different options, so.

• 1:06:43Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:06:43Chris Ryan?

It's kind of, what do you believe?

• 1:06:45Bill Simmons?

55 Central Park West, I think wins the Amanda Dobbins Award for Best Piece of Real Estate. It's a great looking building. The real Ghostbusters cartoon I have as age the best, that was like a real thing there for four years.

• 1:06:57Speaker 02

  It was a big deal.

• 1:06:58Chris Ryan?

And honestly, kept the whole thing in the consciousness between the two movies.

• 1:07:01Bill Simmons?

To make the sequel happen, whether you like the sequel or not.

• 1:07:04Speaker 02

And it was, this was the, the Ghostbusters thing is the first time as a child that I ever experienced confusion in the marketplace. Confusion in the marketplace is something that I would go on to like experience in my adult life, like which thing is the real thing? There was another Ghostbusters cartoon, and this Ghostbusters cartoon.

• 1:07:22Bill Simmons?

  Oh, that's right.

• 1:07:23Speaker 02

Going through time with a fucking gorilla or some shit like that. And so like, the reason why the real one is called the real Ghostbusters is because it was like, hey, these are the Ghostbusters that you know. But I watched the other Ghostbusters for like four shows.

• 1:07:36Chris Ryan?

And it was different dudes, right?

• 1:07:37Speaker 02

It was different dudes, like waiting for them to become the Ghostbusters from the movie.

• 1:07:42Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:07:43Speaker 02

And then the real Ghostbusters comes out, it's completely different. It's the first time I realized that as a kid.

• 1:07:48Bill Simmons?

I had the green Slimer as a what's age the best because Ackroyd and Ramis really wanted the green Slimer to be like Belushi. So they were really pushing the guy to be like, can you make this Belushi-esque?

• 1:07:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:00Bill Simmons?

And make him like a party animal, slobby, and they spent a lot of money on it, and it's like really important Ackroyd. It's like they feel like that's how they got Belushi in the movie with this green Slimer.

• 1:08:09Chris Ryan?

  That's really cool.

• 1:08:10Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:10Speaker 02

I think slime period has aged really well. Eighties, nineties, big slime.

• 1:08:14Bill Simmons?

  Nickelodeon took it over.

• 1:08:15Speaker 02

  Nickelodeon, all that stuff.

• 1:08:16Bill Simmons?

Good point. The promo stuff, this is what I forgot to mention at the top, they had a theatrical trailer with the toll-free telephone number and a message with Murray and Ackroyd, and everyone called it, and it was, for some reason, worked really well with the marketing. You mentioned the busters thing, so the Ghostbusters phenomenon. You had budget busters, crop busters, nuke busters, litter busters, price busters, it was Pan American Airlines. So busters just took off, and eventually became Mythbusters and stuff we have now. The no ghost logo was modified to protest Ronald Reagan, Walter Mondale, Mickey Mouse, uh, union stuff, that kept going.

• 1:08:59Bill Simmons?

And then Murray, when he says, this chick is toast. They think it's the first time somebody ever said toast as like a slang term, and then it took off.

• 1:09:07Chris Ryan?

  No shit.

• 1:09:08Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 1:09:08Chris Ryan?

  Wow.

• 1:09:09Bill Simmons?

They don't think it existed before this.

• 1:09:11Speaker 02

  Interesting.

• 1:09:12Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:14Bill Simmons?

Great shot, Gordo Award, most cinematic shot.

• 1:09:17Chris Ryan?

I don't have a specific shot, but this movie shot by Laszlo Kovacs, Kovacs, who's like a Hungarian cinematographer, did stuff for Bogdanovich, and then winds up shooting a bunch of stuff in the 80s, a lot in New York, that makes that basically that, that 80s New York vibe of movies that moves on from like the super gritty to the more like, hey, yeah, people can live here now, and it's Wall Street, and like, people have advertising executive jobs, and that look is very distinctive, and he did like Legal Eagles, and um, he did Ghostbusters, obviously, and Say Anything. So, he shot Mask, he's just like a really good cinematographer, but all of the New York stuff that he shoots, the crowd scenes and stuff, are just great.

• 1:10:02Bill Simmons?

I have a great shot, Gordo, since you didn't have one. When they're going up the stairs at the end.

• 1:10:07Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:10:08Bill Simmons?

And they have that one shot where it just seems like it's 100 floors of stairs above them, but the way they shoot that.

• 1:10:14Chris Ryan?

Let me know, I'm gonna puke.

• 1:10:15Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's just really, it's a really cool shot. Um, chess swap world, Brock Laners Award for best character name. Is it Dr. Peter Venkman?

• 1:10:24Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:10:24Speaker 02

  I think it's Egon Spengler.

• 1:10:25Chris Ryan?

  It's Gozer the Gozerian.

• 1:10:26Speaker 02

  Oh, Gozer the Gozer.

• 1:10:28Bill Simmons?

  Gozer the Gozerian.

• 1:10:29Speaker 02

  Gozer the Gozerian, yeah.

• 1:10:31Bill Simmons?

Denithys Benihana Award, would you go Dana's apartment, the library, or something else?

• 1:10:35Chris Ryan?

  I had the firehouse.

• 1:10:36Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:10:37Speaker 02

Firehouse is fantastic. Do you know what I like that we don't see on film that much? Tavern on the Green.

• 1:10:43Speaker 02

When they're outside and he's running through, best in Trading Places. Like, I just love the way the outside looks, always like all these people that are eating in there and not noticing what's happening outside. They did that a couple times, I love that.

• 1:10:54Bill Simmons?

  I snuck a category and I didn't tell you.

• 1:10:56Speaker 02

  What is it?

• 1:10:56Bill Simmons?

It's gonna get acrimonious. The Rose from Titanic Award for character who's sneaky sucks. Egon.

• 1:11:05Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 1:11:06Bill Simmons?

Harold Ramis made a choice to never smile as Egon in this entire movie. Cause he didn't think he thought he wanted the character to be super serious.

• 1:11:14Chris Ryan?

I collect plants, molds and fungus.

• 1:11:16Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:16Chris Ryan?

  Spores.

• 1:11:17Bill Simmons?

  He's fine.

• 1:11:19Chris Ryan?

  I think him and.

• 1:11:20Bill Simmons?

Like you said, they're the Beatles. It's like, he's fine.

• 1:11:23Chris Ryan?

Yeah, well, you need a Ringo.

• 1:11:24Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's fine. What's your problem? He's fine, but like what he's, he's the brains of the operation. He fits all the stuff. Crack a smile, maybe get two jokes in there or something.

• 1:11:36Speaker 02

  He, he delivers funny lines.

• 1:11:37Bill Simmons?

  In Stripes, he's really good.

• 1:11:38Chris Ryan?

When he's like Ray, the, the, the interest rate alone after five years is ninety five thousand dollars.

• 1:11:43Speaker 02

  Funny.

• 1:11:45Bill Simmons?

  Craig?

• 1:11:46Chris Ryan?

I'm closer to that. He, he serves the right purpose. He's, he's a role player.

• 1:11:50Bill Simmons?

Okay, he's just setting picks. He's fine. What do you have for flex category?

• 1:11:56Chris Ryan?

The dwarfler's door award for how much that hurt is when Veikman gets slimed.

• 1:12:00Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 1:12:01Chris Ryan?

Recovers really quickly for having a physical contact with an, uh, like a ghost.

• 1:12:07Bill Simmons?

And is it like, what do you think? It's like super thick gooey stuff?

• 1:12:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, what's going on?

• 1:12:11Speaker 02

  Oh, Jesus Christ.

• 1:12:12Chris Ryan?

  So, yeah, I had.

• 1:12:15Speaker 02

Bill, Bill was about, Bill caught himself. Bill was like, isn't it thick?

• 1:12:18Bill Simmons?

Well, I just had to, I had to remember who I was sitting next to.

• 1:12:21Speaker 02

  It's very true.

• 1:12:22Chris Ryan?

I just, and then I was gonna try and do a book about medals for this movie and it's the whole movie.

• 1:12:27Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:12:27Bill Simmons?

  Hmm.

• 1:12:28Speaker 02

When he got slimed, did it paralyze him?

• 1:12:30Chris Ryan?

  That's what I'm asking. Yeah.

• 1:12:31Speaker 02

It seems like he was like, I can't move. It seems like the slime took over him.

• 1:12:36Bill Simmons?

The Sean Penn, I brought my own pack award for excellence in non-screen smoking.

• 1:12:40Chris Ryan?

  Ackroyd.

• 1:12:41Bill Simmons?

Ackroyd's dangling cigarette thing that he pulls off where I don't know how he kept it in his mouth and apparently no adhesives or anything.

• 1:12:48Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:48Bill Simmons?

He just knew how to do it. There's a fifty nine second smoking supercut from this movie that I sent you guys.

• 1:12:53Speaker 02

  I watched it.

• 1:12:55Bill Simmons?

Could have been longer. The Butch's Girlfriend Award for weak link of the film.

• 1:13:00Speaker 02

Well, this was tough. Come on, Van. This, this, this was tough. I really could not think of a weak link and I'm not gonna give it to Ernie Hudson on this goddamn podcast. I really thought about this. I wanted to push myself to think about a weak link in the movie and I could not think of one. Every character that speaks sort of-

• 1:13:20Chris Ryan?

Are you saying this because you're like, you're like, you don't want LeBron to talk bad about Memphis? Like, you don't want to talk bad about-

• 1:13:26Speaker 02

Nah, I mean, if you were gonna give a weak link, that would be the sore thumb, right? And I'm not, but even he is not a weak link. I think he-

• 1:13:33Chris Ryan?

Well, don't do a drive-by at Annie Potts just because you don't want to speak the truth about Ernie Hudson.

• 1:13:37Speaker 02

It's not Annie Potts, though. It's not, to me, it's not Annie Potts. Annie Potts is an important character, too. I don't think, I, I really don't think the movie has a weak link. I'm being for real.

• 1:13:44Chris Ryan?

I, I agree with him. I, and I don't have any caveats. Go ahead.

• 1:13:48Bill Simmons?

Here we go. I think it's Winston. See?

• 1:13:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:51Bill Simmons?

  Let's do it.

• 1:13:52Chris Ryan?

  This is your podcast.

• 1:13:53Speaker 02

It's your, go ahead and do it.

• 1:13:55Bill Simmons?

It's Ernie Hudson aside. It's not an Ernie Hudson thing to me.

• 1:13:58Speaker 02

You can't do that. You fucking-

• 1:13:59Bill Simmons?

It's not an Ernie Hudson thing.

• 1:14:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:14:02Bill Simmons?

I just don't really understand why he shows up halfway through the movie and I think the whole thing-

• 1:14:07Chris Ryan?

It's too much work for three Ghostbusters.

• 1:14:09Bill Simmons?

I agree with everything Craig said, but he just shows up-

• 1:14:11Speaker 03

So they just need, they would need 10 more.

• 1:14:14Chris Ryan?

Well, that's what, I mean, Annie Potts is saying, like, you promised me more help.

• 1:14:16Bill Simmons?

I get, in theory, they're like, he's gonna be the everyman. But I don't feel like they really nailed the character. It just, all of a sudden, he's just kinda there and he never really has his moment.

• 1:14:26Speaker 02

Well, guess what? I understood him.

• 1:14:30Speaker 02

I got exactly what he was putting down. He's the one that talks about believing in God. Like, do you believe in God?

• 1:14:36Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:14:37Speaker 02

  He deepens the Ghostbusters.

• 1:14:38Chris Ryan?

  I love Jesus's style.

• 1:14:39Bill Simmons?

I don't think they had a scene with him that explains, like, why I'm supposed to have a connection with him. I would compare it to in the NBA season during the trade deadline. When it's like, we need a shooter. It's like, we've got Karis Levert.

• 1:14:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:53Bill Simmons?

Here's Karis Levert now. He's on the Pistons. It's like, that's a great idea. Karis Levert will get, and then you never figure out how to use Karis Levert. This is their trade deadline, middle of the movie pickup. But I don't think they totally figured out how to incorporate him. And I think he feels it too, which is why he seems to have a complicated relationship.

• 1:15:10Chris Ryan?

I think he, his character is, is probably the person hurt most by its Craig Horlbeck number of running time. Where it's like, there's just not enough time. The, the obvious point is, there's a moment in the mayor's office when he's like, "Your honor, I want to speak for myself." And you could see Venkman peel off and be like, "Oh, my God, here we go. He's gonna betray us."

• 1:15:30Bill Simmons?

I, I just had more questions than answers, but like, does he like the other Ghostbusters?

• 1:15:35Speaker 02

Well, he's there for a job.

• 1:15:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:36Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:15:36Chris Ryan?

  I mean, he even says-

• 1:15:37Bill Simmons?

Does he like these guys? Does he believe in what they're doing?

• 1:15:40Chris Ryan?

This is not worth another five grand a year.

• 1:15:42Speaker 02

Right. I think they needed that character because the movie got increasingly fantastical as it went along.

• 1:15:48Chris Ryan?

And it's overnight success. They do one job at the hotel and then they're at fucking like Studio 54 the next night. It's cool to have like a little bit of the like, "Hey, I need a job and like, I'll just do whatever you guys say if the money is right."

• 1:16:01Bill Simmons?

And it's, but you, so you would say this was perfectly executed? Cause I would disagree.

• 1:16:05Speaker 02

I wouldn't say that it was perfectly executed. I wouldn't say that it's not, it's not pronounced enough to warrant criticism.

• 1:16:12Bill Simmons?

I understand why they did it. I think it probably made sense in the room. I don't think they executed it well enough in the movie.

• 1:16:19Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 1:16:20Bill Simmons?

He needed like either one more scene where I'm like, "Oh, man, he really needs this job. I didn't realize he had this hardship in his life." Or, "Oh, his, his wife just died." Or something where I'm like, "Oh, now I'm attached to this guy."

• 1:16:32Speaker 02

Kill the man's wife to make him put him in the movie. Haven't we given enough? You wanna kill the man's wife.

• 1:16:38Bill Simmons?

They're in the, in the prison scene. He seems like angry. Like he seems like he's mad at the guys. I'm like, "Don't be mad at my guys. I like these guys."

• 1:16:45Speaker 02

  Why would you think-

• 1:16:47Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:48Speaker 02

That that guy in that situation would be mad because he met these guys and ended up in jail?

• 1:16:53Bill Simmons?

  I know.

• 1:16:55Speaker 02

Like, what do you think, what do you think could be-

• 1:16:57Bill Simmons?

It's almost better if he leaves and he's like, "You guys are fucking crazy. I don't know."

• 1:17:01Chris Ryan?

He's also the one who's like, "You can't just go to the mayor and be like, it's biblical end of time."

• 1:17:06Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:17:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:06Speaker 02

He's, he's, he's the one that's sort of tempering the movie because the movie becomes a full-on science fiction fantasy in the third act.

• 1:17:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. In the last 10, 15, 20 minutes, it's, it's like that.

• 1:17:17Speaker 02

  This was fun, though.

• 1:17:19Speaker 03

  What are you gonna do?

• 1:17:20Chris Ryan?

I can't wait to hear your hottest take. Jesus Christ, that's your weak link.

• 1:17:22Speaker 02

Jesus Christ, need one less job in the town. That's what Bill said.

• 1:17:27Bill Simmons?

I'm glad he's in the movie. I just thought there's like a scene missing.

• 1:17:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:32Bill Simmons?

  Like, yeah.

• 1:17:33Chris Ryan?

My weak link is Walter Pack. And it's not because I don't think William Atherton is basically the prick of the eighties and is an iconic asshole in these movies.

• 1:17:45Speaker 02

  Talk about in a second.

• 1:17:46Chris Ryan?

But I think he could have used either a little bit more juice, like a slightly more earlier appearance. Like, maybe he just like, his whole thing is like two scenes and it's like, everything that happens could have happened by accident without the EPA throwing off the containment.

• 1:18:04Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, it's a good point.

• 1:18:06Bill Simmons?

  What's Age the Worst?

• 1:18:09Bill Simmons?

Ghostbusters 2, just a money grab.

• 1:18:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. I think the-

• 1:18:13Bill Simmons?

None of us feel great about it.

• 1:18:14Chris Ryan?

The handling of the franchise in general has probably been a little-

• 1:18:17Bill Simmons?

I have three more sequels. Also, Shameless Money Grabs.

• 1:18:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:21Bill Simmons?

Across the board and The All-Female Ghostbusters is one of the worst movies in the 2010s. It's really bad.

• 1:18:30Bill Simmons?

  It's just bad.

• 1:18:32Bill Simmons?

  It's a bad movie.

• 1:18:33Speaker 02

Well, I'll tell you what I thought. I thought it was a very important movie. Um, I thought it was a movie that had to be made. I thought it was a movie for its time. I wanted to see a film where-

• 1:18:40Chris Ryan?

  Are you running for mayor?

• 1:18:42Speaker 02

I'm fucking with you. It sucked. But like-

• 1:18:46Speaker 02

Fuck, this is terrible. And I remember trying to-

• 1:18:48Chris Ryan?

  This is awful.

• 1:18:49Speaker 02

I remember trying to woke myself into loving it. Like, I'm sitting down-

• 1:18:52Chris Ryan?

There were really good people in that movie.

• 1:18:54Speaker 02

Hey, hey, hey. The movie, it's, everybody is dead-ass nice at what they do. The writer, the director, all of them together, it just didn't fucking work.

• 1:19:02Chris Ryan?

Did you watch either of the Jason Reitman movies?

• 1:19:05Bill Simmons?

I, after Female Ghostbusters, that was out.

• 1:19:07Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:19:08Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I was like, you know what, some, I feel the same way about a lot of the stuff.

• 1:19:11Chris Ryan?

I, if I remember correctly, the thing is weird about them is like, they are not without some charms. Like, Carrie Coon's really good in it, but like, you're just kinda like, why is this a Ghostbusters movie? It's like a full-on, like-

• 1:19:22Speaker 02

It's not like it's, I mean, there's too much talent on screen for it to be like totally whack, but the fucking shit didn't work. And the, the Ghostbusters that they made, the subsequent ones, the first one I actually kind of enjoyed. But I actually thought it was pretty cool.

• 1:19:35Chris Ryan?

  What, the, the sequel?

• 1:19:37Speaker 02

The, the first sequel that they made, I think it was called-

• 1:19:39Chris Ryan?

Yeah, with all like the goo underneath the city and stuff, yeah.

• 1:19:41Speaker 02

  I actually enjoyed that.

• 1:19:42Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:19:44Bill Simmons?

I had for What's Age the Worst.

• 1:19:47Bill Simmons?

Really tough movie for cable for about 15 years because of the Panin scan.

• 1:19:53Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 1:19:54Bill Simmons?

Um, because, and you can see it now on the wide TVs. This was filmed like a wide movie. And on the Panin scan, you just miss a lot of stuff and everything feels really tight. This is how they did it with the square TVs and it just was always like not the best watch. And now it's a great watch again because the TVs got wider. But I thought, I thought it suffered for a few years.

• 1:20:15Chris Ryan?

A couple of visual gags here that I like, I only noticed like this time around where when Dana first comes in to the firehouse and she goes up to Annie Potts and then Murray just like pops up in the back of the frame and runs over the, over the half wall. It's great.

• 1:20:31Bill Simmons?

The, we mentioned the I want a new drug controversy. And then the only other one is William Atherton claims he became reviled after the movie.

• 1:20:39Chris Ryan?

Well, I mean, then he would die hard.

• 1:20:39Bill Simmons?

He was such a bad guy and that people would be like, hey, dickwiz.

• 1:20:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:43Bill Simmons?

And, and, uh, just like, we're really mad at him for a few years.

• 1:20:47Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:47Bill Simmons?

And then he's like, fuck it and doubles down and does Die Hard.

• 1:20:50Speaker 02

Um, I have to say this. I know, you know, people think that I have no taste in movies. I love Ghostbusters 2. Love it.

• 1:21:00Chris Ryan?

Didn't you just start with, I thought it was okay and now you've gotten to, I love it?

• 1:21:03Speaker 02

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 1:21:04Chris Ryan?

  In just like five seconds?

• 1:21:05Speaker 02

  I don't think that I, I don't, if I was saying I thought it was okay, then like, I love Ghostbusters 2.

• 1:21:09Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:21:09Speaker 02

Like I, it's, it's, it's, it's hard for me to look at the movie as bad. I've got my nostalgia glasses on. The one thing that aged poorly in this movie is some of the establishing shots look boarded. They look like.

• 1:21:19Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:21:20Speaker 02

Yeah, like I, that is always a thing that stamps a movie in the time. Like some of the establishing shots in the movie, they looked sort of animated and rendered in a way.

• 1:21:29Chris Ryan?

I think that there's a bunch of stuff at the end of the movie that's basically matte paintings and stuff like that.

• 1:21:33Speaker 02

Yeah. And they use those as establishing shots and like the, the, like that stuff never ages well to me when they do stuff like that.

• 1:21:39Bill Simmons?

You didn't have anything else, right?

• 1:21:40Chris Ryan?

Just Peter Venkman using his position as a professor to extract sexual favors out of students and, and clients.

• 1:21:47Bill Simmons?

I just thought that was part of the job.

• 1:21:49Speaker 02

By the way, I got a question. When Venkman is in there with the girl.

• 1:21:54Chris Ryan?

  With the psychic?

• 1:21:54Speaker 02

With the psychic girl, right? Hilarious scene, wavy lines, the whole thing. When he tells Ray to come back, right? In an hour and an hour and a half, does Venkman think?

• 1:22:05Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:05Speaker 02

  That he's about to fuck?

• 1:22:07Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:22:07Speaker 02

In the like, well, if that's the case, that age tore terribly. And by the way, an hour and hour and a half, told you, nine minutes. That's the floor.

• 1:22:19Bill Simmons?

Ralph Lauren Rubenek Partridge overacting award?

• 1:22:22Chris Ryan?

  The person playing Gozer?

• 1:22:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:22:25Bill Simmons?

  Who was that?

• 1:22:26Chris Ryan?

  Uh, that's a good question.

• 1:22:27Bill Simmons?

They said they wanted Grace Jones and she turned it down.

• 1:22:30Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I think it was person you get when you can't get Grace Jones.

• 1:22:33Speaker 02

Someone look exactly like Grace Jones in terms of the aesthetic.

• 1:22:38Bill Simmons?

Oh, Van, you have a flex category.

• 1:22:40Speaker 02

  Flex category, another list.

• 1:22:42Chris Ryan?

Slot via Yovan, plays Gozer. I mean, there's no picture of him.

• 1:22:48Bill Simmons?

All right, Van's flex category, he's got a list.

• 1:22:50Speaker 02

Top five dick actors of the eighties. You see these guys, you know that they're playing dicks.

• 1:22:56Bill Simmons?

  Oh, like actual dicks.

• 1:22:58Speaker 02

Like, they're not actually dicks in real life. I'm sure these guys are lovely men, but these guys played the assholes of the eighties.

• 1:23:04Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:23:05Speaker 02

Okay. Number five, Thomas F. Wilson.

• 1:23:08Bill Simmons?

  Oh, Biff.

• 1:23:09Speaker 02

  Biff.

• 1:23:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:10Speaker 02

Back to the Future one, Back to the Future two. Now, he doesn't have the dick catalog of some of these other guys, but Biff is just all time.

• 1:23:18Bill Simmons?

Hall of Fame, first ballot dick.

• 1:23:21Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:23:21Speaker 02

  Not only that, Biff, psychopath.

• 1:23:24Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:25Speaker 02

Killer. Biff wants to kill, and he has killed.

• 1:23:28Chris Ryan?

  Unethical gambler.

• 1:23:29Speaker 02

Unethical gambler, hold it. Number four, Paul Gleason.

• 1:23:32Bill Simmons?

  Yep.

• 1:23:33Speaker 02

  The Breakfast Club, Trading Places.

• 1:23:35Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:23:36Speaker 02

  He plays.

• 1:23:37Bill Simmons?

I make thirty thousand dollars a year.

• 1:23:41Bill Simmons?

These kids are gonna respect me.

• 1:23:43Speaker 02

The top three is where it really gets tight. Cause the top three.

• 1:23:48Bill Simmons?

Cause you need Atherton in there.

• 1:23:50Speaker 02

  Yeah, number three, William Zapka.

• 1:23:54Chris Ryan?

  Hmm, okay.

• 1:23:55Bill Simmons?

  Billy Z.

• 1:23:55Speaker 02

Johnny Lawrence, Karate Kid, Just One of the Guys, and.

• 1:24:00Bill Simmons?

  Chaz.

• 1:24:01Speaker 02

  Back to School.

• 1:24:02Bill Simmons?

  Chaz.

• 1:24:03Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 1:24:03Speaker 02

Yeah, Back to School. Top two.

• 1:24:06Bill Simmons?

  A dick diver.

• 1:24:07Speaker 02

A dick diver. Top two, we basically got LeBron and Jordan.

• 1:24:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:11Speaker 02

It depends on what you want.

• 1:24:12Chris Ryan?

  And it's Atherton and who?

• 1:24:14Speaker 02

  Spader.

• 1:24:15Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:24:15Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 1:24:16Speaker 02

Adder, like, it depends on what you like.

• 1:24:19Chris Ryan?

I mean, to me, Spader is playing at another level, you know?

• 1:24:22Speaker 02

Yeah, you think Spader is playing at another level?

• 1:24:24Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:24:25Speaker 02

But when you think about Atherton, though, Spader's number two for me. Pretty in Pink, Baby Boom, whatever movie he was in.

• 1:24:31Bill Simmons?

Cause he could slide the other way, too, and be a decent guy.

• 1:24:33Speaker 02

  That's the problem with him.

• 1:24:35Bill Simmons?

  Could only be a dick.

• 1:24:36Speaker 02

Atherton, Ghostbusters, Die Hard, don't forget, Real Genius. Also, in Real Genius as the terrible professor.

• 1:24:45Chris Ryan?

  Oh, that's right.

• 1:24:46Speaker 02

In Real Genius as well, like, that's three in terms of the movies I love. All-time heavyweight assholes.

• 1:24:54Chris Ryan?

Do you consider Spader a dick in Sex, Lies and Videotape?

• 1:24:57Speaker 02

  Kinda. Kinda, yeah, but yeah.

• 1:25:00Chris Ryan?

  Kinda wanna do that.

• 1:25:00Bill Simmons?

  Kind of a romantic.

• 1:25:01Chris Ryan?

I kinda wanna do Sex, Lies and Videotape.

• 1:25:03Bill Simmons?

What do you mean, kind of? It's on the list. It's my mom's favorite movie.

• 1:25:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:08Speaker 02

  Your mom's favorite movie?

• 1:25:09Bill Simmons?

  Yes, unfortunately.

• 1:25:10Speaker 02

  The fuck I'm talking about?

• 1:25:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Yes, it is.

• 1:25:13Speaker 02

  That's a Baton Rouge classic.

• 1:25:14Chris Ryan?

Would she do it with us?

• 1:25:16Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:25:16Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:25:16Bill Simmons?

But she's asked repeatedly when we're doing it.

• 1:25:18Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:25:19Bill Simmons?

She thinks it's the height of cinema. That and Annie Hall, she wants us to do that one, too.

• 1:25:24Chris Ryan?

  That was great.

• 1:25:24Bill Simmons?

She can't believe we haven't done a Woody Allen movie yet.

• 1:25:26Chris Ryan?

  Bill's mom month?

• 1:25:27Bill Simmons?

Bill's mom month? Can we get that sponsor?

• 1:25:31Speaker 02

  Who would sponsor that?

• 1:25:32Chris Ryan?

  Hallmark.

• 1:25:33Speaker 02

  Hallmark? Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:25:34Bill Simmons?

Yeah, wait, it would be alcohol. With alcohol sponsor.

• 1:25:38Chris Ryan?

  Josh wines.

• 1:25:43Bill Simmons?

  So Atherton, number one.

• 1:25:45Speaker 02

I got Atherton to number one. I feel like real genius put him over the top. Because when I was thinking about it.

• 1:25:50Bill Simmons?

I like to think about this. Zapka did have the trilogy.

• 1:25:54Chris Ryan?

I think there's also like a definitional thing because you're going with like dramas and comedies here. And I wonder whether or not in the Schwarzenegger eighties action universe.

• 1:26:03Bill Simmons?

  Like Robert Patrick?

• 1:26:05Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:05Bill Simmons?

But he couldn't have been in Dick's many times.

• 1:26:07Speaker 02

I thought about Gene Hackman, who also tended in this decade.

• 1:26:10Bill Simmons?

The only one who feels like he's missing is Burt Young because he played Paulie, the worst character of any movie ever.

• 1:26:15Chris Ryan?

You're making a distinction between dicks and villains.

• 1:26:17Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:18Speaker 02

  Not villains, but dicks.

• 1:26:19Chris Ryan?

Because the guy who plays Cherry in Another Forty Eight Hours, who's the bad guy in Toy Soldiers.

• 1:26:24Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:25Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:26:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:26Chris Ryan?

But that's more of a villain.

• 1:26:27Bill Simmons?

  Andrew Davaugh.

• 1:26:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, that's more of a.

• 1:26:28Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:29Chris Ryan?

And Robert Davi is a big one for the eighties.

• 1:26:32Speaker 02

Robert Davi was huge. That was the Goonies and what else?

• 1:26:34Bill Simmons?

William Forsythe could be in there too.

• 1:26:35Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:26:36Bill Simmons?

I think you landed in the right spot. Uh, the CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford hottest take award.

• 1:26:43Chris Ryan?

  Uh.

• 1:26:43Bill Simmons?

I'll go last because I think you guys are going to get up and leave.

• 1:26:46Chris Ryan?

I think that Ghostbusters is the best movie to ever come out of Saturday Night Live.

• 1:26:51Bill Simmons?

  Ooh.

• 1:26:52Chris Ryan?

And I will include not only movies based on sketches, which is how we probably usually think of SNL movies. But let's go Elf, let's go Bridesmaids, let's go Wayne's World, Tommy Boy, like, uh, I'll include a bunch now. When you, Austin Powers, but when you get to, you know, is Inglourious Basterds a Saturday Night Live movie? Because Mike Myers is in it. No. It has to have like at least a couple of people from SNL and have like an SNL sensibility.

• 1:27:19Bill Simmons?

And it has to be like relatively close enough to when they were on the show.

• 1:27:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:27:23Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Can't be like twenty eight years later.

• 1:27:25Chris Ryan?

But I think this is the best movie to come out of Saturday Night Live.

• 1:27:27Speaker 02

I think it's clear. The question is what's two actually? Because like when I think about all the movies that we could compare it to, there's a huge, huge gap. I mean, Wayne's World, the rest of those movies were like phenomenal, but there's a huge gap.

• 1:27:38Bill Simmons?

  Trading Places count?

• 1:27:39Chris Ryan?

I think so. And I think, I think there's a world in which Anchorman counts. I mean, that would be, that would be the competition.

• 1:27:46Bill Simmons?

But I would say it's, it's clearly the most successful of any SNL movie ever.

• 1:27:52Speaker 02

Anchorman, even if you were to count Anchorman, it's just like in no way, shape or form fucking with Ghostbusters.

• 1:27:57Bill Simmons?

No, it was, it was almost like a slow burn, Anchorman.

• 1:28:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:03Bill Simmons?

  That's pretty good CR.

• 1:28:04Speaker 02

What are we leaving out? I feel like.

• 1:28:05Bill Simmons?

No, I mean, there's a bunch of the Feral movies have to be mentioned.

• 1:28:09Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I mean, Step Brothers in Talladega, but a lot of those movies are like.

• 1:28:12Bill Simmons?

Movies like Happy Gilmore has to be in there.

• 1:28:14Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:17Chris Ryan?

Eddie Murphy movies, like Beverly Hills Cop.

• 1:28:18Bill Simmons?

  All the Eddie movies.

• 1:28:20Speaker 02

  But Eddie only made really.

• 1:28:21Chris Ryan?

But Eddie, it's just Eddie in those movies. It's not like they come from like a creative nexus of like.

• 1:28:25Bill Simmons?

Right. You need like at least two people tied to SNL.

• 1:28:27Speaker 03

It's also lasted the test of time better than any SNL movie by far.

• 1:28:31Chris Ryan?

It's better than Blues Brothers. It's better than.

• 1:28:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:33Speaker 03

Blues Brothers is more culturally expired, but Ghostbusters is still super popular and famous.

• 1:28:38Speaker 02

  Huh. Yeah.

• 1:28:39Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:28:39Bill Simmons?

In a house, it's really only Belushi in that so that it doesn't go, what's your hottest thing?

• 1:28:46Speaker 02

What right do the Ghostbusters have to put ghosts in jail?

• 1:28:53Speaker 02

I never thought about, are the Ghostbusters the fucking police? I think to myself, like, guess it's my Uncle Mark, rest in peace, right? Let's say that my Uncle Mark, who spent a lot of time in Golden State Penitentiary, passed away, wants to come back and visit me. What right do the Ghostbusters have to incarcerate ghosts?

• 1:29:11Chris Ryan?

It's like an immigration issue for you.

• 1:29:13Speaker 02

  Ghosts in jail.

• 1:29:14Chris Ryan?

If ghosts were, if this was happening in 2026, we now know how you would be tweeting about Ghostbusters.

• 1:29:20Speaker 02

They, I would have to ask the question. The reality, I, I've never thought about this before in my life because I think my brain was regular before and now it's warped. But like, I thought about it, you get to go and a police action against a ghost, tie the ghost up. The woman that was in the library, that was clearly her job. She was shushing people. She used to work there.

• 1:29:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, what was Slimer doing?

• 1:29:44Speaker 02

Yeah, well, like, I'm just saying, like, he's hanging around. Look, if the ghosts are acting unruly, that's one thing. You talk to the ghosts, give the ghosts therapy, whatever you do.

• 1:29:52Chris Ryan?

Well, this is where the EPA comes in.

• 1:29:54Speaker 02

But what I'm saying, the EPA, who, what gives them the right to build a private prison and put the ghosts in there?

• 1:30:00Chris Ryan?

We haven't really vetted what these guys are doing. It's a private transaction between the person who calls the Ghostbusters and the Ghostbusters. Because the Ghostbusters are like, when he's like, I'm not gonna pay for this, they're like, well, we'll just let the ghost back out.

• 1:30:13Speaker 02

Well, yeah, right. So the Ghostbusters run a nuclear-powered private prison for ghosts, and I don't know, like...

• 1:30:20Bill Simmons?

Was that a good use of city resources?

• 1:30:21Speaker 02

  I don't think that's right!

• 1:30:23Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:24Bill Simmons?

Well, you know my theory with ghosts.

• 1:30:25Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:30:26Bill Simmons?

You gotta just talk to them and get to a good place with them. You don't, you don't become adversarial with the ghosts. All that's gonna do is make them wanna fight you.

• 1:30:33Chris Ryan?

So it's more about, you would be like more of a social outreach kind of Ghostbuster?

• 1:30:35Bill Simmons?

I would be like pro ghosts, friendly ghosts, like, how can we help you guys?

• 1:30:39Speaker 02

Like, what do we do? Now, obviously, there are some ghosts, you know, ghosts possessing people and all that stuff. You gotta bring Constantine in and like do all of that stuff, but like, for the most part, I don't know that they have the right to do what they was doing. And it kinda pissed me off this time. Like, get out of here. I have a second hideous take, real quick one.

• 1:30:56Speaker 02

  Dana's a fucking gold digger.

• 1:31:00Chris Ryan?

  What do you mean?

• 1:31:02Speaker 02

Dana very clearly dissed Venkman when he first came to her apartment.

• 1:31:08Bill Simmons?

Oh, that he wasn't in the stratosphere for her?

• 1:31:10Speaker 02

Yeah, she very clearly dissed him.

• 1:31:12Chris Ryan?

Do you think she's dating the guy who's snorting Afrin?

• 1:31:15Speaker 02

She was dating him, but you know what changed? What changed is she saw Venkman on TV.

• 1:31:21Bill Simmons?

  Became a small business owner.

• 1:31:23Speaker 02

Venkman became a small business owner. He became a celebrity.

• 1:31:27Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:27Speaker 02

And even when he comes up to her the next time, when she sees him, she smiles, because now he's famous.

• 1:31:34Bill Simmons?

You know what? I respect it.

• 1:31:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:37Bill Simmons?

She's a classical violinist, she's tall and she's hot, and she's not gonna date some discount Ghostbuster. Hey, she's got like, guys who run restaurants coming after her, and hedge fund guys, like, she's got like high-end...

• 1:31:49Chris Ryan?

We're Eastern Europeans at the orchestra.

• 1:31:51Bill Simmons?

  High-end people.

• 1:31:52Speaker 02

Gordon Gekko is at the goddamn orchestra.

• 1:31:53Bill Simmons?

Athletes like Bernard King made a run at her, like, she's, she's got a lot of options. Lawrence Taylor's called her.

• 1:31:58Chris Ryan?

Do you think she dated Bernard King, but then the knee injuries kinda took him out of the mix for her?

• 1:32:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, then she was out, yeah.

• 1:32:04Chris Ryan?

Does she go for Dennis Peck?

• 1:32:06Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, Dennis Peck.

• 1:32:08Chris Ryan?

  So what's your hottest take?

• 1:32:10Bill Simmons?

Yeah, you guys aren't gonna be happy.

• 1:32:14Bill Simmons?

I think if Sigourney and Kathleen Turner switch movies in 1984, everyone wins.

• 1:32:20Chris Ryan?

So what's, Romance in the Stone?

• 1:32:22Bill Simmons?

Sigourney does Romance in the Stone and Jewel of the Nile, and Kathleen Turner does Ghostbusters 1 and 2, and this movie goes to another level. And when she's possessed, I think, I think I'm dead. I think in 1984, that's it. I have like a testicle explosion. I'm just dead.

• 1:32:43Bill Simmons?

But possessed Kathleen Turner, it's like, what happened to your son? He died. It's a weird story. Uh, he exploded.

• 1:32:50Chris Ryan?

What, what is leading you to wanna like, improve Ghostbusters by 5%?

• 1:32:55Bill Simmons?

This is the whole point of the hottest take award. This is a hot take.

• 1:32:59Speaker 02

  You forget what.

• 1:33:00Bill Simmons?

I just think you switch Kathleen Turner and Sigourney.

• 1:33:03Chris Ryan?

Do you want Kathleen Turner and Eddie Murphy?

• 1:33:04Bill Simmons?

I think Sigourney would've been amazing in Romance in the Stone.

• 1:33:06Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 1:33:06Speaker 02

She would, it would've really worked. It would've really worked. I don't know how well Kathleen Turner works in this.

• 1:33:11Chris Ryan?

Then does Sigourney Weaver does, does War of the Roses? Like, is it, does she take the Turner spot?

• 1:33:17Bill Simmons?

She does War of the Roses.

• 1:33:19Speaker 02

  Well, I tell you what.

• 1:33:20Bill Simmons?

We just do some switcheroo's. Maybe Kathleen Turner's in Dave.

• 1:33:24Speaker 02

You forget what type of time Kathleen Turner was.

• 1:33:26Bill Simmons?

I, I didn't forget. That's why this was my hottest take.

• 1:33:29Speaker 02

  Damn, what the fuck?

• 1:33:30Bill Simmons?

She was, Kathleen Turner in the mid 80s is, to me, all time pantheon.

• 1:33:34Speaker 02

  She's a Mar-a-Lago superstar right here.

• 1:33:36Bill Simmons?

Yeah, she just oozes sexuality in every moment of her life.

• 1:33:40Chris Ryan?

Your testicle would explode. That's what you said?

• 1:33:43Bill Simmons?

I said there would've been a testicular explosion.

• 1:33:46Speaker 02

But why? Why? Why? But I, do you feel like a part of this? Do you feel like she was maybe too smoldering for this movie?

• 1:33:54Chris Ryan?

Yeah, she's too hot for Ghostbusters.

• 1:33:56Bill Simmons?

The thing is, she was miscast in Romance in the Stone because she plays like this mousy romance novelist, who's like, gets unleashed by, by Michael Douglas, swashbuckling in this adventure. And it's like, that's a better Sigourney Weaver role. Kathleen Turner as like, I'm a hot classical violinist. And now I'm possessed by Zul.

• 1:34:17Chris Ryan?

Are you just looking at pictures of Kathleen Turner?

• 1:34:19Bill Simmons?

  Yes, I've read Van's gone.

• 1:34:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, man.

• 1:34:22Bill Simmons?

We gotta take one more break. Try to rally Van back.

• 1:34:24Speaker 02

  I never really, yeah.

• 1:34:27Bill Simmons?

• 1:36:14Bill Simmons?

All right, casting what ifs. There's a ton, including Chevy Chase claiming in 2018 that he turned down Venkman.

• 1:36:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:23Bill Simmons?

Again, all I have is the sniff test for these.

• 1:36:26Chris Ryan?

  So which one of these?

• 1:36:27Bill Simmons?

That one didn't smell right to me.

• 1:36:28Chris Ryan?

  Let me ask you this.

• 1:36:29Bill Simmons?

Do you, do you believe Chevy Chase and Bill Murray have had a weird relationship for 50 years?

• 1:36:33Chris Ryan?

I believe there was a phone call.

• 1:36:35Bill Simmons?

And he's like, yeah, I could have done Ghostbusters. I turned it down.

• 1:36:37Chris Ryan?

There's also like, in the half-ass internet research for this, there is just a real like, Bill Murray is not in your movie until he is in the first day of shooting.

• 1:36:45Bill Simmons?

Right. Do we have backup plans?

• 1:36:46Chris Ryan?

Yes. Was there a phone call? Possibly. I'm gonna read you the what ifs that are listed on the internet for Venkman. Just give me the one that you think is the most interesting.

• 1:36:55Bill Simmons?

  Okay, cool.

• 1:36:56Chris Ryan?

Michael Keaton, Chevy Chase, Tom Hanks, Robin Williams.

• 1:37:02Bill Simmons?

  I don't believe that one.

• 1:37:03Chris Ryan?

  Steve Guttenberg.

• 1:37:04Bill Simmons?

  No way.

• 1:37:04Chris Ryan?

  And Richard Pryor.

• 1:37:05Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:37:06Speaker 02

Okay, so I believe Keaton. I don't believe Hanks.

• 1:37:09Chris Ryan?

Keaton was the one that I thought was the most interesting.

• 1:37:11Bill Simmons?

I think Keaton made a ton of sense, and I think he would have been good in the movie. And I'm a, I'm pro Michael Keaton.

• 1:37:16Speaker 02

Keaton has played versions of this role.

• 1:37:19Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:37:19Speaker 02

Yeah, like he's the wise cracking.

• 1:37:21Chris Ryan?

He's basically this in Gung Ho.

• 1:37:22Speaker 02

Gung Ho. Yeah, in Gung Ho.

• 1:37:23Bill Simmons?

As you know, Billy Blase Jasky, I think is one of the funniest characters in the history of anything. And I think he could have just been Billy Blase Jasky as Venkman.

• 1:37:31Chris Ryan?

  From Night Shift.

• 1:37:32Bill Simmons?

  From Night Shift.

• 1:37:33Speaker 02

  From Night Shift.

• 1:37:33Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Uh, the one that I was most interested in was the Egon rumors. Christopher Walken, John Lithgow, Christopher Lloyd, Jeff Goldblum.

• 1:37:46Bill Simmons?

Goldblum seems like he turned it, Goldblum turned it down.

• 1:37:49Chris Ryan?

  Did he?

• 1:37:51Bill Simmons?

That's what, that was in the research, but then you read the Reitman story and it's like, yeah, it was our three guys.

• 1:37:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:56Bill Simmons?

But it does seem like Ramis eventually became Igor, but.

• 1:38:01Chris Ryan?

  Egon, yeah.

• 1:38:01Bill Simmons?

Egon. Who's Igor? The guy in the Nets? Igor Damon? He eventually became Igor Damon on the Nets.

• 1:38:10Bill Simmons?

  Egon.

• 1:38:12Chris Ryan?

I love that those are the two things you've got in your brain.

• 1:38:14Bill Simmons?

But I wonder if there was a moment when he didn't think he was gonna be in it.

• 1:38:17Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:17Bill Simmons?

Goldblum, I think, is really good.

• 1:38:18Chris Ryan?

  Walken's pretty interesting.

• 1:38:20Speaker 02

Walken's interesting, Goldblum could have done anything.

• 1:38:22Bill Simmons?

See, I think Walken shoes up too much scenery.

• 1:38:24Chris Ryan?

Do you want Eddie Murphy to play Winston?

• 1:38:25Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:38:26Bill Simmons?

  Well, but that's Eddie Murphy.

• 1:38:27Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:38:28Bill Simmons?

What, but what version of Walken would you have wanted?

• 1:38:32Chris Ryan?

  Uh.

• 1:38:32Bill Simmons?

Would you want a Deer Hunter?

• 1:38:34Chris Ryan?

It's Annie, it's basically Annie Hall.

• 1:38:35Bill Simmons?

  Would you want Roulette?

• 1:38:41Chris Ryan?

Guys, when the Deer Hunter, will we do that?

• 1:38:44Bill Simmons?

  Have you seen Deer Hunter?

• 1:38:45Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:38:45Speaker 02

Oh, never. Oh, we talked about this. Yeah.

• 1:38:48Bill Simmons?

Talk about a movie that obliterates the Horrlebeck scale. I think it doubles a half.

• 1:38:53Chris Ryan?

  But a lot of Pittsburgh.

• 1:38:54Bill Simmons?

  Hours long.

• 1:38:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:55Speaker 02

But it moves quick, though. Lots happening, every scene.

• 1:38:59Bill Simmons?

Apparently Daryl Hannah, Denise Crosby, Julia Roberts, and Kelly LeBrock all auditioned for Dana.

• 1:39:04Speaker 02

  Julia Roberts?

• 1:39:05Bill Simmons?

  She was too young.

• 1:39:06Speaker 02

  In 1984?

• 1:39:07Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:07Chris Ryan?

  What about LeBrock?

• 1:39:08Bill Simmons?

I don't know if I believe that. LeBrock's interesting. John Candy offered Louis Tolle, turned it down.

• 1:39:13Chris Ryan?

Wanted to do Louis with a German accent.

• 1:39:15Bill Simmons?

They definitely went hard after John Candy.

• 1:39:17Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:39:18Bill Simmons?

And he just didn't get it. And then Sandra Bernhard turned down Janine.

• 1:39:23Chris Ryan?

I think we wound up in the right place with everything.

• 1:39:25Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:39:26Bill Simmons?

And then Paul Rubens was allegedly gonna be Gozer for a second. I don't know if I believe that one. I, all of these, I just don't know if I believe. That's that guy. So is William Atherton a that guy? Or is he William Atherton?

• 1:39:38Chris Ryan?

I think you can, you can throw him in there. I think.

• 1:39:39Speaker 02

  He's probably that guy.

• 1:39:40Bill Simmons?

Is he that guy to you?

• 1:39:42Chris Ryan?

He is a that guy to me.

• 1:39:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:39:43Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:39:44Speaker 02

  So he's the one.

• 1:39:45Chris Ryan?

  But I, you know.

• 1:39:45Bill Simmons?

But is that guy from Die Hard or that guy from Ghostbusters?

• 1:39:48Chris Ryan?

Correct. I had David Margulies, who plays the mayor.

• 1:39:51Speaker 02

Oh, he's a really good that guy.

• 1:39:53Bill Simmons?

Jennifer Runyon was a stealth that guy. She was in Up the Creek, Charles in Charge, whole season. Not key 90210 episode, and she played Cindy Brady in A Very Brady Christmas. All in like five years. Dionne Waiters Award, Moranis isn't in too much.

• 1:40:09Chris Ryan?

No, he's not. He's in three seasons.

• 1:40:10Bill Simmons?

No, he's, he's in the whole last 20 minutes of the thing.

• 1:40:13Speaker 02

I got him or Andy Potts.

• 1:40:14Chris Ryan?

I gotta talk to you for a second about Dionne. Dionne isn't about a screen time limit. It's about what you do with your screen time.

• 1:40:24Bill Simmons?

He's like the sixth lead in the movie.

• 1:40:26Chris Ryan?

  Uh, come on.

• 1:40:28Speaker 02

  The movie got six characters.

• 1:40:30Chris Ryan?

  Help me out here.

• 1:40:31Speaker 02

It, no, he, he's clearly right.

• 1:40:33Bill Simmons?

He's in it for like forty five minutes.

• 1:40:35Chris Ryan?

He meets her outside of her apartment. He has his party.

• 1:40:38Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:38Chris Ryan?

  Gets chased.

• 1:40:39Bill Simmons?

He has the whole scene outside the apartment. He has the whole party scene. He has the whole chase scene.

• 1:40:43Chris Ryan?

We didn't even talk about enough where he's just like, do you want some coffee? Yes, have some. Like it's, and he's smelling the fucking landline. It's so funny.

• 1:40:52Bill Simmons?

  So is Ernie Hudson eligible?

• 1:40:53Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but Ernie Hudson is not funnier than fucking Rick Moran.

• 1:40:56Bill Simmons?

  Trying to start shit.

• 1:40:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, you wanna double down.

• 1:40:59Bill Simmons?

All right. If you wanna make Moranis eligible, that's fine. What do you think, Craig? Is he eligible?

• 1:41:02Speaker 03

I just looked it up. He's in, this is according to AI, eight to ten minutes, eight to ten minutes of this movie.

• 1:41:08Bill Simmons?

  That can't be right.

• 1:41:09Chris Ryan?

  AI can't get down.

• 1:41:10Speaker 03

No, it says he's in roughly eight to ten minutes of screen time in this movie.

• 1:41:14Chris Ryan?

If you pay for the pro version, can you get an actual runtime?

• 1:41:16Speaker 02

Claude or chat, chat GPT. Would you have Annie Potts?

• 1:41:21Bill Simmons?

No, I think I'd have Moranis. I just wanted to make sure he's in.

• 1:41:23Chris Ryan?

Annie Potts in this movie? I think she's lovely.

• 1:41:25Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, she's fine. She's good. She's good.

• 1:41:27Chris Ryan?

  I like to read.

• 1:41:29Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:30Speaker 03

  Her accent is crazy.

• 1:41:31Bill Simmons?

  Her accent is crazy.

• 1:41:32Speaker 03

  Out of control.

• 1:41:33Bill Simmons?

Her hidden on Egon, all of that.

• 1:41:35Speaker 03

  Yeah, she's good.

• 1:41:35Bill Simmons?

  I love her.

• 1:41:37Bill Simmons?

  Recasting couch director city.

• 1:41:41Bill Simmons?

The John Candy one really stuck in my head.

• 1:41:43Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:41:44Bill Simmons?

Um, he ends up doing Splash, so he's represented in nineteen eighty four in a, in a good way. But it's just a really interesting twist if he's that character.

• 1:41:57Bill Simmons?

I don't know what's better, cause I think Moranis is great.

• 1:41:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:42:01Bill Simmons?

Craig did his flex, half-ass internet research. Columbia had Frank Price, who ended up becoming a, a great teammate of Michael Eisner's and then died tragically in a plane crash when he was the number two guy at Disney. He became the head of Universal after he bought the script and believed in the script so much. He sold Columbia the title for five hundred thousand plus one percent of the film profits.

• 1:42:23Chris Ryan?

  There you go.

• 1:42:24Speaker 02

  Smart son of a bitch.

• 1:42:25Bill Simmons?

  Fucking Frank Price. Smart dude.

• 1:42:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:42:29Bill Simmons?

Richard Edlin did all the special effects, used part of the budget to found Boss Film Studios, because there were like no special effects studios back then. They advanced five million dollars and started this whole thing. The Marshmallow Man outfit, designed by Bill Bryan, who modeled his walk after Godzilla, eighteen foam suits cost almost six hundred thousand dollars. And he had to have a separate air supply because the, the whole thing was so toxic. Marshmallow was, was raining down the crowd with shaving cream.

• 1:43:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:01Bill Simmons?

Gave a lot of people rashes.

• 1:43:02Chris Ryan?

But you know what, I was thinking like-

• 1:43:03Bill Simmons?

  Nineteen eighty-four was great.

• 1:43:04Chris Ryan?

That would be so dope if it was actually marshmallows and you were just like an extra on the set of Ghostbusters.

• 1:43:09Bill Simmons?

Picking marshmallows out of your hair for five years. The original library ghost puppet was too scary and had to be given in the Fright Night movie instead.

• 1:43:17Chris Ryan?

  Oh, interesting.

• 1:43:19Speaker 02

  I like Fright Night.

• 1:43:20Bill Simmons?

You mentioned the Bill Moore. There is a, a deleted scene where Ray has a sexual encounter with a female ghost. They decided to cut.

• 1:43:28Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:43:29Bill Simmons?

  Sorry, man.

• 1:43:29Speaker 02

  Wait a minute.

• 1:43:30Chris Ryan?

  Well, Ray does have a-

• 1:43:31Speaker 02

He does have a sexual encounter-

• 1:43:32Chris Ryan?

He gets a BJ from a, well, not a BJ, but like he, he gets his zipper-

• 1:43:36Speaker 02

  His zipper taken off?

• 1:43:37Bill Simmons?

  But I think there's like-

• 1:43:39Chris Ryan?

  Oh, that's a, that's a runner, like a running gag in the-

• 1:43:41Bill Simmons?

  I think it goes further.

• 1:43:42Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 1:43:43Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:43:43Bill Simmons?

And then, uh, the rooftop, the final confrontation was at a soundstage that required fifty thousand amps of electricity to properly light it. And Columbia had to shut down all of their other stages while they did this, because it was so much electricity.

• 1:43:57Chris Ryan?

  Jesus.

• 1:43:58Bill Simmons?

Ironic, like almost a parallel of the movie. Apex Mountain.

• 1:44:01Chris Ryan?

Oh, I had one more piece of internet research from the Vanity Fair, kind of not an oral history, but it's like a making of Ghostbusters piece.

• 1:44:10Chris Ryan?

When they're, they're basically waiting to find out whether Murray's gonna do this movie. And they're, they're not sure until like the day of the movie. So Murray flies back to New York after the Razor's Edge shoot. This is from Vanity Fair. Ramis and Reitman picked him up at LaGuardia Airport to show him the reworked script. Quote, "Bill flew in on a private plane an hour late," Ramis said in the nineteen eighty-five interview. "He came through the terminal, terminal with a stadium horn, one of those bullhorns that plays eighty different fight songs, and he was addressing everyone in sight with this thing." They had to drag him out and take him to a restaurant in Queens where they showed him the script and he had no input and just said, "I trust you guys." He does the movie.

• 1:44:49Bill Simmons?

That would have been good for the Steven Seagal category.

• 1:44:53Bill Simmons?

Apex Mountain Murray, I think yes.

• 1:44:56Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:44:56Speaker 02

Yeah. Could make an argument for Groundhog Day, but yeah.

• 1:45:01Bill Simmons?

  Aquaroid.

• 1:45:02Chris Ryan?

I think Groundhog Day is a good.

• 1:45:03Bill Simmons?

No, after this, it's like, I mean, he didn't work for four years.

• 1:45:07Speaker 02

I know, but like. Groundhog Day becomes like this, like.

• 1:45:09Bill Simmons?

  I get it.

• 1:45:09Speaker 02

  Gigantic, huge.

• 1:45:10Bill Simmons?

  Aquaroid. Probably Trading Places.

• 1:45:14Chris Ryan?

Well, he wrote this, though, and he basically like, kind of is the custodian of the Ghostbusters franchise. So I think that in some ways this is his. It's his apex.

• 1:45:23Speaker 02

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that Groundhog Day to me is.

• 1:45:27Bill Simmons?

  For Bill Murray.

• 1:45:28Speaker 02

For, is Bill Murray, but yeah.

• 1:45:29Bill Simmons?

  Sigourney Weaver?

• 1:45:30Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:45:31Speaker 02

  Nah, I don't know.

• 1:45:31Chris Ryan?

  Aliens.

• 1:45:32Bill Simmons?

  Aliens. Fifty-five Central Park West?

• 1:45:35Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:45:36Bill Simmons?

  Ramis?

• 1:45:38Chris Ryan?

  Uh.

• 1:45:39Speaker 02

  Yes?

• 1:45:41Chris Ryan?

  I guess.

• 1:45:41Bill Simmons?

  Probably doing, being a director.

• 1:45:42Chris Ryan?

It would be this or Groundhog.

• 1:45:43Bill Simmons?

Yeah, probably Groundhog Day. Stay Puft Marshmallows?

• 1:45:48Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:45:48Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:45:49Chris Ryan?

  Real brand?

• 1:45:50Speaker 02

  Is it?

• 1:45:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:51Chris Ryan?

  Is it?

• 1:45:51Bill Simmons?

I thought it was. Didn't look it up. Ghost movies?

• 1:45:54Speaker 02

I have that as, to me, I think it is.

• 1:45:56Chris Ryan?

  This or Ghost.

• 1:45:57Speaker 02

This or Ghost. This, this is the debate that I'm here for. Is it Ghost or Ghostbusters for the number one ghost movie of all time?

• 1:46:05Chris Ryan?

  It's busting.

• 1:46:07Bill Simmons?

Did you do Ghost with us when we did that and rewatched it?

• 1:46:09Speaker 02

  Not.

• 1:46:10Chris Ryan?

That was you mean Amanda? Where you said that this is your idea of the afterlife.

• 1:46:14Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I thought that was, I thought what happens in Ghost is what happens in hell.

• 1:46:18Speaker 02

Are you talking about at the end?

• 1:46:20Bill Simmons?

Yeah, when they, when they bring Willy Lopez, they pull him down, the shadows come out and pull him down to the, the, the ground.

• 1:46:26Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:46:26Bill Simmons?

  That's what happens.

• 1:46:27Speaker 02

  Oh, wow. Okay.

• 1:46:28Bill Simmons?

I think they really figured it out.

• 1:46:30Speaker 02

  In the real, in like.

• 1:46:31Bill Simmons?

Yeah, you're like, what happened? And then you look at your dead self and then the fucking shadows come out and pull you down.

• 1:46:37Speaker 02

Yeah, it was very sad scene. Which one is it?

• 1:46:40Chris Ryan?

  I think it's Ghostbusters.

• 1:46:41Speaker 02

  Ghostbusters or Ghost?

• 1:46:45Bill Simmons?

  I think it's Ghostbusters.

• 1:46:47Speaker 02

  Yeah, boy.

• 1:46:48Bill Simmons?

I would have put Poltergeist in the running, too.

• 1:46:50Speaker 02

Poltergeist is cool, but Poltergeist is cool. I think it's Ghostbusters, but it is like, oh, it's razor thin to me. Ghost is like such a big.

• 1:46:57Chris Ryan?

Some other people might be like, it's Paranormal Activity, or it's Conjuring, or something like that.

• 1:47:04Bill Simmons?

Paranormal Activity is really good. I like that movie. New York City movies?

• 1:47:09Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:47:10Bill Simmons?

  No. Ernie Hudson?

• 1:47:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, Oz?

• 1:47:13Chris Ryan?

What else was he? What's his biggest thing?

• 1:47:15Bill Simmons?

Well, he plays the special needs gardener in Hand that Rocks the Cradle.

• 1:47:19Speaker 02

  Yeah?

• 1:47:20Bill Simmons?

He was in Oz for a couple of years.

• 1:47:23Speaker 02

  Oz, he plays the warden.

• 1:47:24Chris Ryan?

  That's right.

• 1:47:25Bill Simmons?

He's good in Oz. I like Ernie Hudson.

• 1:47:27Speaker 02

Yeah, don't try to. Stay on that side.

• 1:47:29Bill Simmons?

I am, man. The record is like Ernie Hudson.

• 1:47:32Speaker 02

  Stay on that side.

• 1:47:33Bill Simmons?

I like it. I don't think that part was Ernie Hudson's fault.

• 1:47:35Speaker 02

Ernie is the man, but this is probably what he's best known for.

• 1:47:38Chris Ryan?

I think so. He's one of the Ghostbusters.

• 1:47:40Speaker 03

  Is he in the sequel?

• 1:47:41Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:47:42Speaker 03

Yes. Does he have a larger role?

• 1:47:44Speaker 02

Basically the same, little bit larger.

• 1:47:46Bill Simmons?

  Rick Moranis?

• 1:47:47Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:47:48Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:47:48Chris Ryan?

  Right?

• 1:47:49Bill Simmons?

It's Honey and Shrunk the Kids.

• 1:47:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:47:51Bill Simmons?

  New York City library scenes?

• 1:47:54Speaker 02

  Might be.

• 1:47:55Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I think New York City Public Library, probably.

• 1:47:59Bill Simmons?

The Cedric Hotel? Never heard of that before this movie. Anything else?

• 1:48:03Speaker 02

  Uh, Turning into Dogs?

• 1:48:06Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:48:07Speaker 02

Could it? Could it be? Think about other, I mean, Turning into Dogs, there's Twilight where you turn into a wolf. There's other stuff, but it's just.

• 1:48:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:14Chris Ryan?

I was gonna say, this isn't, it's hard to articulate what exactly is the apex mountain, but one of the things that bums me out about modern architecture is you're just never gonna get a story like the occult architect who built in like a special metal to make it a superconductor of paranormal stuff. Like it's like, got five condos above a Trader Joe's. Like, nothing's gonna happen there.

• 1:48:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:48:37Bill Simmons?

  That's a good point.

• 1:48:38Speaker 02

Ghost Combat. Last one. Is this the apex of Ghost Combat? I'm asking. Cause there's actually ghosts, ghosts fighting with ghosts, tussling with the ghosts.

• 1:48:48Chris Ryan?

I would say Ice Cube in Ghost of Mars. This is a pretty good Ghost Combat.

• 1:48:52Bill Simmons?

I think it is. Cruiser Hanks?

• 1:48:54Chris Ryan?

  I have Hanks.

• 1:48:55Bill Simmons?

  Hanks. Scorsese or Spielberg?

• 1:48:57Chris Ryan?

  This is tough.

• 1:48:58Bill Simmons?

  No, it's not.

• 1:48:59Chris Ryan?

You don't wanna see Marty's version of this in New York City?

• 1:49:02Bill Simmons?

  No, I don't.

• 1:49:02Chris Ryan?

  Travis Pickle becomes a Ghostbuster?

• 1:49:04Bill Simmons?

  It's instead of marshmallows.

• 1:49:06Chris Ryan?

You guys are so fucking boring with this one.

• 1:49:10Bill Simmons?

The Van Lathan Award, did this movie need more black people?

• 1:49:13Speaker 02

  Nah.

• 1:49:15Bill Simmons?

  Picking nits.

• 1:49:17Bill Simmons?

  Is Dana's apartment too nice?

• 1:49:19Chris Ryan?

  Uh.

• 1:49:19Bill Simmons?

  Feels like it is.

• 1:49:20Chris Ryan?

  So.

• 1:49:21Bill Simmons?

That feels like an apartment that, um, it's like Mimi Rogers apartment and someone to watch over me.

• 1:49:26Speaker 03

Isn't that like the single most coveted spot in New York City?

• 1:49:29Chris Ryan?

Central Park West is, um, has always been one of the great, you know, real estate.

• 1:49:33Speaker 03

Like if I could pick any apartment location, it might be that literal apartment.

• 1:49:36Chris Ryan?

She's got a one bedroom. Like, it's not like she's living in a penthouse apartment. It is very nice.

• 1:49:40Speaker 02

I think she comes from money. Cause like, I think.

• 1:49:43Chris Ryan?

  Oh, she calls her mother.

• 1:49:44Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that's why she doesn't like Venkman.

• 1:49:46Speaker 02

She doesn't like Venkman, cause he doesn't have any bread. She's a concert cellist or whatever. She probably went to all the finest schools, fucking Sorbonne, wherever you go, wherever you go to do that, I don't know where you go. Julia R, wherever you go.

• 1:49:56Chris Ryan?

  Julia, yeah.

• 1:49:57Speaker 02

And so she went to all that and that's what she's doing. That's why she's stuck up. Goes bring it back down to earth.

• 1:50:01Bill Simmons?

  Well, I had for another.

• 1:50:02Chris Ryan?

  Little edge about Dana.

• 1:50:04Speaker 02

I, I didn't like that part, man. Like, don't, don't front on me. When I come over there to help you with the ghost situation and then after I blow up, you want to be down with me. Don't front on me.

• 1:50:12Chris Ryan?

He's turkey basting her apartment and is like, when can we go get Chinese food?

• 1:50:14Bill Simmons?

That's facts. I had next pick and nits, why did Dana like Venkman? What, what turned it? But we already talked about this.

• 1:50:22Speaker 02

  We already know.

• 1:50:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:50:23Speaker 02

  Bossed up.

• 1:50:23Bill Simmons?

Probably a little cash. Uh, my only other one is, I just think hundreds of people would have been killed by falling debris during the day. Think all the people that were in the bottom of the, of like looking up, they're all dead.

• 1:50:35Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:50:36Bill Simmons?

Just things that are falling down, hitting them. What do you have, CR?

• 1:50:39Chris Ryan?

  Uh, for picking nits?

• 1:50:40Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:50:40Chris Ryan?

You know, I, I really like, like your point about like what gave them the right and would there be any oversight? Furthermore, like the New York City being in a paranormal pandemonium, I think would just be a much bigger deal. I know we see a brief moment of like the National Guard coming out, but I just don't think they would leave it up to these four guys who got kicked out of NYU or Columbia.

• 1:51:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, this is the city that protested the premiere of The Warriors.

• 1:51:07Bill Simmons?

They would have, the paranormal activity would have been, would have been tough.

• 1:51:10Speaker 02

Um, why are the Ghostbusters allowed to have a blueprint in jail?

• 1:51:16Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah, dude.

• 1:51:18Speaker 02

Why do they have, they, they're in jail, they're looking at a blueprint?

• 1:51:21Bill Simmons?

That was movie jail though, where it's like a big, it's almost like a big recess.

• 1:51:24Speaker 02

They take your stuff and they put it in a thing, but they're letting them fully plan. Okay, holding cell, whatever. You had other motherfuckers in there.

• 1:51:32Chris Ryan?

I don't even know if those dudes have gotten processed.

• 1:51:34Speaker 02

Why, why are they allowed to have a blueprint in there? To like, look at a blueprint and stuff in there?

• 1:51:39Bill Simmons?

  It's a good one.

• 1:51:42Bill Simmons?

Sequel, prequel, prestige, TV all podcast, Untouchable. Sadly, we got sequels. This should have been an Untouchable.

• 1:51:48Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 1:51:48Bill Simmons?

We should have been done. Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Fergie the Florist, Ryan Ruko, Gus Johnson, Zayn Lowe? What do you got, CR?

• 1:51:57Chris Ryan?

I got Zayn when Gozer shows up. He's just like Zayn, Gozer, Gozer the Gozerian. It's great to see you, man, or woman, because you take many forms, just like your music. Your music is undefinable and so are you. But I have to say, good evening, and as a duly designated representative of the city, county, and state of New York, I order you to cease any and all supernatural activity and return forthwith to your place of origin or to the nearest convenient parallel dimension.

• 1:52:33Chris Ryan?

  And we'll be listening.

• 1:52:35Bill Simmons?

  Zayn was wordy.

• 1:52:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:52:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:52:37Chris Ryan?

  Wordy Zayn this time.

• 1:52:44Bill Simmons?

I want to introduce Shaquille O'Neal.

• 1:52:47Chris Ryan?

  Oh, my God.

• 1:52:48Bill Simmons?

As the Inside the NBA analyst analyzing the Ghostbusters movie. And just saying, I thought the best person in the movie was Gozer the Gozerian. And then everybody kind of goes, OK, cool. And then they go to commercial.

• 1:53:04Speaker 02

  The others.

• 1:53:05Bill Simmons?

Just want to ask her who gets it. The song?

• 1:53:08Chris Ryan?

  Bill Murray.

• 1:53:08Speaker 02

  Venkman.

• 1:53:10Bill Simmons?

  Venkman for Best Actor?

• 1:53:11Chris Ryan?

Yeah. The song that ripped off Huey Lewis gets Best Oscar?

• 1:53:15Bill Simmons?

Well, they didn't know at the time.

• 1:53:17Speaker 02

  The Venkman. I got Venkman.

• 1:53:18Bill Simmons?

So you have Bill Murray winning the Oscar.

• 1:53:21Chris Ryan?

Well, who won in 1980? What was that year?

• 1:53:23Bill Simmons?

  I'm gonna look it up. I didn't.

• 1:53:24Chris Ryan?

Is it gonna be like Raging Bull or something?

• 1:53:26Bill Simmons?

  Not in my notes.

• 1:53:27Speaker 02

Gandhi, 84. Let's, can I guess? Gandhi? No.

• 1:53:32Speaker 02

  Chariots of Fire? No.

• 1:53:33Speaker 03

I just called to say I love you from Woman in Red.

• 1:53:37Speaker 02

Oh, that won the Oscar. Yeah.

• 1:53:39Bill Simmons?

  F. Murray Abraham and Amadeus?

• 1:53:42Chris Ryan?

  It's fine.

• 1:53:43Bill Simmons?

Jeff Bridges in Starman, Albert Finney, Under the Volcano, Tom Holtz.

• 1:53:49Chris Ryan?

  And Amadeus. Honestly, I'd.

• 1:53:50Bill Simmons?

Sam Waterston, The Killings Fields, was really good.

• 1:53:53Chris Ryan?

He's really good. I'm just saying I'm not as far off as you think.

• 1:53:57Bill Simmons?

I like it, CR. I respect it.

• 1:53:58Chris Ryan?

  Thanks, bud.

• 1:53:59Bill Simmons?

I think there could have been room for Albert Finney, Under the Volcano. I don't know what the fuck was going on there.

• 1:54:06Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, that'd back haul.

• 1:54:07Chris Ryan?

  Thanks, bud.

• 1:54:09Bill Simmons?

  Um, probably an answerable questions.

• 1:54:14Bill Simmons?

We just have to play out, is this movie better or worse with Belushi than Bill Murray? And the answer is it's worse.

• 1:54:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:21Bill Simmons?

I love Belushi. That was one of my guys. I do think he needed this in the Belushi IMDb if he hadn't like, lost his mind and, you know, died of a drug overdose. This was the kind of movie that I think would have been great for him. He just didn't have it. He didn't have like a leading man trying to be like dashing and just nothing like this. Which is probably why Bill Murray was writing it for him.

• 1:54:45Speaker 02

He died on his climb. He was still on his climb when he passed.

• 1:54:47Bill Simmons?

Yeah, yeah. I think this would have been a huge one for him.

• 1:54:50Chris Ryan?

Similar would you rather would be, would you rather if this movie come out five years later, six years later, slightly better special effects?

• 1:55:01Bill Simmons?

Hmm. No, because I really feel like 84 was the quintessential year for this to come out. I think it's like perfect timing of it.

• 1:55:12Bill Simmons?

The Floyd Gondoli Butter in My Ass and Lollipops in My Mouth Award for something I just enjoy.

• 1:55:19Bill Simmons?

The Key Master. Just a great nickname. Why, what are we doing? How is KD not the Key Master?

• 1:55:25Speaker 02

  Oh, KD the Key Master.

• 1:55:27Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Well, they've got it. If you do a Key Master, you have to also have the Gatekeeper. So it's like.

• 1:55:32Bill Simmons?

Maybe that, so Jason Tatum could have been the Key Master and Jaylen Brown could have been the Gatekeeper?

• 1:55:36Speaker 02

The Gatekeeper and the Key Master.

• 1:55:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:39Speaker 02

But you have to have people that like each other.

• 1:55:40Chris Ryan?

And you have to have people who know Ghostbusters.

• 1:55:42Speaker 02

So you can't have those two.

• 1:55:43Chris Ryan?

Maybe like, yeah, that could be Steph Castle and Victor Weminyama.

• 1:55:46Speaker 02

Yeah, you have to have teammates that might want to be there.

• 1:55:49Chris Ryan?

Wemby's the Gatekeeper. He's, he's, he's closing the door at the back of the, back of the play.

• 1:55:54Bill Simmons?

  Key Master is really good.

• 1:55:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:57Bill Simmons?

I think really feel like we missed out.

• 1:55:58Chris Ryan?

My Floyd is, uh, Bill Murray working a crowd. So when they first get out of Ecto, when they get up to Dana's apartment at the end. And he's just like, you know him, you love him. It's race dance. He's just like, this guy has the city in the palm of his hands. This is crazy.

• 1:56:14Speaker 02

Mine is the fireplace poles that you slide down.

• 1:56:18Chris Ryan?

  Oh, fuck.

• 1:56:19Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah. Good one.

• 1:56:20Speaker 02

  Well, like.

• 1:56:22Bill Simmons?

Should I get that? I can put that way up there.

• 1:56:25Speaker 02

I love that joint. Remember the old Batman show?

• 1:56:28Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:28Speaker 02

Where they would start off as Bruce Wayne and then slide down and it would be like.

• 1:56:32Chris Ryan?

What are we doing? Do any of these hype houses have fucking fire poles?

• 1:56:35Speaker 02

  I haven't seen any.

• 1:56:36Bill Simmons?

You know what happened? The poles turned into use for strippers.

• 1:56:40Chris Ryan?

Well, maybe also like somebody fell.

• 1:56:41Bill Simmons?

We stopped thinking about them being conventional, going from up here to down here and just thinking about women dancing on them.

• 1:56:48Speaker 02

Women dance. I've seen some amazing things.

• 1:56:51Bill Simmons?

The secret handshake club memorial, memorabilia you'd want from this movie. For me, it's one of the proton packs. There's got to be four total.

• 1:57:01Chris Ryan?

And we can't do Ecto, Ecto one, the car, right?

• 1:57:05Bill Simmons?

No, but that car is pretty crazy.

• 1:57:07Chris Ryan?

It's also great when he's like, when he pulls up and Murray's like, you can't park that here.

• 1:57:11Speaker 02

And the, the look, the look on Murray's face when he tells him how much he paid for the car.

• 1:57:16Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:57:16Speaker 02

They, they, they're in on him and he just like gives that look. It's like forty eight hundred bucks.

• 1:57:21Chris Ryan?

He needs new shocks, new brakes, new brake pads.

• 1:57:23Speaker 02

Yeah. How much? How much? Forty eight hundred dollars. And then the look that he gives. That car is still out there.

• 1:57:28Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:57:28Speaker 02

They have it out there when you go see it. Um, I always wanted one of the proton packs.

• 1:57:32Chris Ryan?

I, I would do Ghostbusters jumpsuit.

• 1:57:34Bill Simmons?

  Hmm.

• 1:57:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:57:36Bill Simmons?

Coach Finstock, Mr. Miyagi, where best, worst life lesson? Ghosts are fucking real. That's my lesson. Don't underestimate them, Ben.

• 1:57:43Speaker 02

I'm not. You know, I believe in it.

• 1:57:45Bill Simmons?

  Best double feature choice?

• 1:57:46Chris Ryan?

I have, uh, Big Trouble in Little China, which I probably have picked before, but has a similar comic sci-fi element to it.

• 1:57:53Speaker 02

I had the Blues Brothers. Stay in the side.

• 1:57:56Chris Ryan?

It's a long fucking night because Blues Brothers is a long movie.

• 1:57:58Bill Simmons?

I had Cop. Let's just go eighty four. Beverly's Cop.

• 1:58:01Chris Ryan?

Oh, I thought you meant the James, the James Woods movie.

• 1:58:05Bill Simmons?

Beverly's Cop, because Cop would be amazing. Uh, who won the movie?

• 1:58:10Chris Ryan?

  Murray.

• 1:58:10Speaker 02

Uh, Peter Venkman won the movie, my friend. Bill Murray.

• 1:58:15Bill Simmons?

  There's a Reitman case.

• 1:58:17Chris Ryan?

Yeah, for sure. Looks, looks better than, it's very well directed. This is John Landis.

• 1:58:24Bill Simmons?

Meatballs, stripes. He's now with this movie, becomes not only the premier comedy director of that generation, but as a director and producer, just becomes a fucking juggernaut. Goes right to Arnold Schwarzenegger, which is the Kindergarten Cop, and has this crazy run from, what, seventy-nine to ninety-three, all the way through Dave, fifteen years. And Ghostbusters is the NBA Finals MVP for him.

• 1:58:52Chris Ryan?

Because you think about it, not, I'm not slagging John Landis necessarily, but like if John Landis is directing this movie, there's like a twenty-minute car crash scene in New York City.

• 1:59:02Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:59:02Chris Ryan?

Like you get like way more Stay Puft Marshmallow Man than you need. There's like, there's just a lot more action and Reitman just seems to know exactly why people will respond to this film.

• 1:59:13Speaker 02

  I had a bad joke.

• 1:59:14Bill Simmons?

I would go Reitman, but you guys, who do you have for this?

• 1:59:17Speaker 03

I would go Murray. Murray carries the hell out of this movie. Not that it's like, he's the only reason it's good, but he is.

• 1:59:23Chris Ryan?

If somebody was like, why, why do you think Bill Murray's funny? I'd show him Ghostbusters.

• 1:59:26Speaker 03

Yeah. It also feels the most like he, like the lines were not written and he was coming up with them, which I think you also have to give him credit for. That's kind of my takeaway, seeing this movie again, because it had been a really long time. It's crazy to me how movies like this, that feel so like, I don't want to say unfinished, but movies that feel like they kind of make it up as they go. Where it's like, the script wasn't really finished, Bill Murray just showed up last second. There was something I was reading about Annie Potts, just like showed up the day she needed to shoot, they had like no costume for her. She took like the hairdresser's glasses and put them on and then just wore those for the whole movie. It's just, it's so haphazard, the way these things are thrown together.

• 2:00:03Chris Ryan?

And it's just, and now those glasses are kind of like iconic.

• 2:00:06Speaker 03

They're very, yeah. Yeah. And it's just crazy how messy those, these movies were of this era and how they worked. And now, that just wouldn't happen. Now everything would be so finished and glossy and purposeful and.

• 2:00:18Chris Ryan?

  And safe.

• 2:00:19Speaker 03

And safe. And I think ultimately, what's aged the best in this movie is just friends being in movies together, which is just like, you don't really see. There's just friends in movies.

• 2:00:27Chris Ryan?

  That's a good call, man. Let's make a movie.

• 2:00:29Speaker 03

  We should.

• 2:00:30Chris Ryan?

  Let's do it.

• 2:00:30Speaker 02

What would our movie be about? The three, the, the four of us?

• 2:00:33Bill Simmons?

Four of us? Uh, trying to find a bar in San Francisco after a live show.

• 2:00:39Chris Ryan?

That actually would be a really good start for a one crazy night movie.

• 2:00:43Bill Simmons?

Having a walk, six tenths of a block downhill and Mallory's dying and then something happens.

• 2:00:49Chris Ryan?

No, it would be, we record a podcast in a house from a famous movie and then something happens in the house. The Boogie Nights house. Yeah, we're in the Boogie Nights house.

• 2:00:57Bill Simmons?

  Oh, interesting.

• 2:00:57Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Or we're in the Halloween house, recording our rewatchables and then something happens.

• 2:01:00Bill Simmons?

  I think it's a one crazy night.

• 2:01:02Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. It's one crazy night.

• 2:01:03Bill Simmons?

And it's clearly San Francisco because San Francisco closes.

• 2:01:04Chris Ryan?

It's one of the five nights of the year that you're like, we're drinking tonight?

• 2:01:07Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:08Speaker 02

You know, you know what the name of the movie is?

• 2:01:09Bill Simmons?

  Dan's ordering pizzas.

• 2:01:11Speaker 02

We order pizza to the bar, the movie is called.

• 2:01:12Chris Ryan?

What was the cocktail that you kept getting?

• 2:01:14Speaker 02

  I can't remember.

• 2:01:14Chris Ryan?

Banana something? It was a banana something.

• 2:01:15Speaker 02

  Banana something.

• 2:01:16Chris Ryan?

  Bananarama? Bananarama.

• 2:01:18Speaker 02

Bananarama. The, the name of the, the name of the movie is Live Show. And it's about.

• 2:01:23Bill Simmons?

  Live Show.

• 2:01:24Speaker 02

Yeah, that's, it's about doing a live show in a place, it's the big live show and everything goes wrong.

• 2:01:30Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:30Speaker 02

That's the name of the movie, Live Show.

• 2:01:33Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we learned that night when Van says, I shouldn't tell you this because I've had too much to drink.

• 2:01:38Chris Ryan?

That's a great bar though, shout out that bar.

• 2:01:39Bill Simmons?

It's like fucking buckle up at that point.

• 2:01:41Chris Ryan?

Peacekeeper, that was a good bar.

• 2:01:42Speaker 02

  Peacekeeper bar.

• 2:01:43Bill Simmons?

  Peacekeeper.

• 2:01:44Chris Ryan?

  It's a great bar.

• 2:01:44Speaker 02

  Great bar.

• 2:01:45Chris Ryan?

  Great salsa.

• 2:01:45Bill Simmons?

One of the only bars in San Francisco open past nine thirty at night.

• 2:01:48Speaker 02

  Everywhere.

• 2:01:49Chris Ryan?

I've said that to a couple of people who stared at me like I was out of my mind. So obviously we were in the wrong, we were looking in the wrong places.

• 2:01:53Speaker 02

We're probably in the wrong part of town, but whatever they talking about, they full of shit because we would go places, they'd be like, it's nine fifteen, get the fuck out.

• 2:02:01Bill Simmons?

And then we went and got coffee. What was the name of that place?

• 2:02:04Chris Ryan?

  Coffee Movement? Coffee Movement.

• 2:02:06Bill Simmons?

Coffee Movement. Waited in line for 10 minutes, which violates everything I believe in.

• 2:02:10Chris Ryan?

  It's close though.

• 2:02:11Bill Simmons?

Literally everything. And then they only had 10 ounce cups.

• 2:02:13Chris Ryan?

  So you got two.

• 2:02:14Bill Simmons?

So I had to get two 10 ounce coffees.

• 2:02:18Chris Ryan?

  It's really funny.

• 2:02:18Bill Simmons?

And guess what? It was fucking delicious. It was worth it. I would wait on that line again.

• 2:02:22Speaker 02

I had a fun time. Man, I rode the trolley. We went to the game.

• 2:02:26Bill Simmons?

  San Francisco's the best.

• 2:02:27Speaker 02

  It was amazing.

• 2:02:28Bill Simmons?

When are we going back? Crowd was great.

• 2:02:30Speaker 02

Crowd was great. The theater was great.

• 2:02:32Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, great theater, everything.

• 2:02:33Speaker 02

  Peacekeeper ended up being great.

• 2:02:35Chris Ryan?

Tony V making moves with the Giants lineup.

• 2:02:38Speaker 02

We were at that one place that was at the top of the hotel.

• 2:02:42Chris Ryan?

Top of the, top of the, uh, top of the mark. Top of the mark. Yeah.

• 2:02:46Speaker 02

Had drinks, beautiful. We were starving.

• 2:02:49Chris Ryan?

Kicked out, no food. They looked at us like we were the fucking outsiders just walked in. Yeah.

• 2:02:54Bill Simmons?

It's definitely a secret handshake club city and we didn't know the handshake. We don't know the handshake. For food and bars. But I still like San Francisco. Fan CR, thank you. Craig Gahow, thank you. Thanks to Eduardo as well. Anybody else?

• 2:03:08Speaker 03

  Matt.

• 2:03:09Bill Simmons?

  Matt.

• 2:03:09Speaker 03

  Shout out.

• 2:03:11Bill Simmons?

All right, next, next month, we're, uh, it's gonna be a comedy month. Netflix is a joke. We're doing a bunch of comedies in May. So stay tuned. Thanks, guys. No problem.
