• 1:39Chris Ryan?

  Just Ringer Tailgate.

• 1:40Bill Simmons?

It's Ringer Tailgate, yeah. Well, it's called Ringer Tailgate.

• 1:42Speaker 02

  It's actually not almost over.

• 1:43Bill Simmons?

  What do you mean?

• 1:44Speaker 02

I mean, we're going during the offseason.

• 1:46Bill Simmons?

  Are you guys really?

• 1:47Chris Ryan?

  Are you really?

• 1:48Speaker 02

There's a lot of things to cover during the offseason.

• 1:49Chris Ryan?

Are you gonna rank like campuses and stuff like that?

• 1:52Speaker 02

Recruiting classes, transfer portal, spring games will be in March. We're gonna cover just one episode a week, but we're continuing.

• 2:00Bill Simmons?

What a fun pod for us. And then also Midnight Boys.

• 2:04Speaker 02

  Pew pew, pew pew.

• 2:06Bill Simmons?

Chris Ryan, The Watch, Land Man's over. What's next for you? House of Dragon?

• 2:10Chris Ryan?

Industry, Night of Seven Kingdom, Kingdom.

• 2:13Bill Simmons?

Tough industry episode for Jon Snow this week.

• 2:16Chris Ryan?

I think, or was it a great episode?

• 2:18Bill Simmons?

Or was it a great episode?

• 2:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 2:19Bill Simmons?

He just needed to punch a guy to near death before he could have sex again.

• 2:23Chris Ryan?

That's what the British aristocracy does.

• 2:25Bill Simmons?

Yeah. This is our last re-watchables that is gonna be on YouTube because the next one will be on Netflix on Monday. And we're gonna do Zodiac. We're gonna try to do at least for the first couple of months, movies that are also on Netflix. So you can watch the movie on Netflix and then watch the pod. So we're doing the re-Zodiac next week.

• 2:42Chris Ryan?

  Yes, the re-Zodiac.

• 2:43Bill Simmons?

I wasn't on the first one. You're not a Zodiac guy.

• 2:47Speaker 02

I mean, I liked the movie. It's a good movie. It's very intense. But it's very important to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

• 2:56Bill Simmons?

  Why's that?

• 2:56Speaker 02

Because Zodiac is a part of the re-establishing of the career of Robert Downey Jr.

• 3:02Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 3:02Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it was like, he's viable again.

• 3:04Speaker 02

He's viable again, and then you have Kiss Kiss Bang Bang in there somewhere. He comes back kinda with like The Singer Detective, some movies like that. But we talk about it all the time whenever we have a conversation about him. If, try to think of somebody who Hollywood was out on or is out on right now. That's how out they were on him. And then he worked his way back.

• 3:22Bill Simmons?

All right. Well, Eddie Murphy in a different point of his career in Another Forty Eight Hours. This is one for us week. We did just one of the guys on Monday, Another Forty Eight Hours, a movie that we've complained about and talked about forever, and it's next.

• 3:50Bill Simmons?

All right, so a couple of months ago, you guys were actually on the pod. I talked about the sequel ideas that made me the maddest

• 3:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 3:55Bill Simmons?

in the history of mankind. And number one on the list was Another Forty Eight Hours, Keo Becoming the Iceman. And this is a movie that drives me crazy, and yet I feel like I've seen it 30 times.

• 4:05Chris Ryan?

You know what? You feel the way about Another Forty Eight Hours the way some people feel about the end of Game of Thrones. It's like you're such a keeper of the lore.

• 4:13Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 4:13Chris Ryan?

You understand the landscape of the law enforcement and criminal underworld of San Francisco in the early 80s as told by Forty Eight Hours. And this movie betrayed you. This movie stabbed you right in the heart.

• 4:26Bill Simmons?

And yet I keep watching over and over again because I like having my guys back. It's, I wrote down, it's a karaoke sequel, Van. Same music, similar opening.

• 4:36Bill Simmons?

Two bar scenes, there's a hotel shootout. Jack Cade says, "Call for help now." Rips that off again. We have Eddie singing Roseanne. We have Jack shooting at Reggie at the end.

• 4:48Chris Ryan?

  Roxanne.

• 4:49Bill Simmons?

Roxanne. Roseanne. I wrote Roxanne for some reason, my notes, Roxanne.

• 4:55Bill Simmons?

Jack's shooting Reggie at the end, the lighter switch ending in The Busboys. So it's basically like all the staples, it feels like the same movie, it's not as good. And yet, I always watch it when it's on.

• 5:06Speaker 02

Why? Well, for me, this was another sequel first movie. I saw this one before I saw the second one. It's always tough to kind of go back. When you see this one.

• 5:16Chris Ryan?

Not entirely sure, I'm not the same way. I can't remember. But I may have seen another before Forty-Eight.

• 5:23Bill Simmons?

Right. Because this came out in 1990, so that's conceivable, you guys saw this first.

• 5:27Speaker 02

So when you go back and watch the first one after you've seen this one, the first one seems like the fucking Godfather. It seems like a very serious. I mean, it does. But this one is a movie that's like, it's, it moves very fast. It's pretty fun, it's incredibly violent. Like when you're 10 or nine or 10 years old in the 80s, like I was at this point, these are the kind of movies that you're watching. And Eddie Murphy is such a gigantic star.

• 5:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 5:50Speaker 02

That he can kind of, through gravity, pull a movie to its end. When you go back and watch the first one, it's not as oriented around him. The movie takes itself a lot more seriously, it's a completely different, it's funny, but it's a totally different movie.

• 6:03Bill Simmons?

And he almost got fired on the first one. After two weeks, and they couldn't really figure him out, he'd never been on a movie before, he didn't really know how to act. And then they figured out how to use his improvisation. By the time we do this, he's, he's the first guy listed in the movie. It's built around him, he's had seven number one hits in a row, this was the last one that became number one, opening weekend. And he's the biggest movie star we have. And this is kind of when it ends here.

• 6:30Chris Ryan?

Well, yeah, I mean, I think that this movie is an interesting what if and an interesting kind of crossroads for him because we'll talk about how there is a lost version of this film.

• 6:42Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 6:42Chris Ryan?

And if this movie winds up having a more critically favorable reception and if it winds up doing better at the box, I mean, it did pretty well at the box office, but if it has like a warmer reception, you wonder what is different about Murphy post another Forty-Eight Hours.

• 6:58Speaker 02

Can I ask a question, like, about what you guys think about this take? Whether or not this, this is, I can't think of another movie. This is kind of the end of the edisance. But you can argue that it's the beginning of the Nolte sense. Like Nolte is already pretty well established, but like after this, you go Cape Fear, The Prince of Tides, Lorenzo's Oil, The Player, I'll Do Anything, Blue Chips. Like he really goes on a run.

• 7:24Bill Simmons?

  Yes, yes.

• 7:25Speaker 02

These, they're movies that we all love. Through Fugitive, I love, Down and Out in Beverly Hills might be my favorite.

• 7:30Bill Simmons?

What year was that? That was like eighty eight.

• 7:33Speaker 02

Down and Out in Beverly Hills is eighty six.

• 7:34Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 7:35Speaker 02

So, I mean, that's three years. Nick Nolte is already a big star, but he goes up to another level in terms of prestige in the next four or five or six years. And it's interesting that they're kind of ships passing in a night one more time, like in this film.

• 7:49Bill Simmons?

Yeah, and I think he cleaned up his act too, right, CR?

• 7:51Chris Ryan?

  I mean, definitely. I definitely think that's.

• 7:54Bill Simmons?

Cause I remember the famous Saturday Night Live story where Eddie hosted because Nick Nolte partied so hard that week, he couldn't host the show. He basically called in sex.

• 8:02Chris Ryan?

He looks a lot better in this movie than he did in the first one.

• 8:05Bill Simmons?

He even said, yeah, quit drinking.

• 8:07Speaker 02

Yeah, Eddie remarks, he goes, yeah, what happened?

• 8:10Bill Simmons?

Yeah, you're right, cause he does. Yeah, he didn't really have anything before this, and you're right. Prince of Tides was a big one for him.

• 8:17Speaker 02

That's a huge one. I mean, he became people's sexiest man alive.

• 8:21Bill Simmons?

Blue Chips was kind of where the wheels started to go back off.

• 8:24Speaker 02

Blue Chips is where he kind of.

• 8:25Bill Simmons?

Nice little four year run for him.

• 8:26Speaker 02

Blue Chips, I loved Trouble, and then he takes a big swing with Jefferson and Paris.

• 8:31Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 8:31Speaker 02

And that kind of doesn't really work.

• 8:32Chris Ryan?

You know, it's also like the movie industry itself kind of turns towards guys like Nolte, and you have these adult dramas and adult comedies that are, he's capable of leading, and I think that makes a big difference.

• 8:44Bill Simmons?

That's two thirds of it. The other third was the Julia Roberts movie that bombed.

• 8:48Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 8:49Bill Simmons?

I love Trouble. It was like one of the most famous bombs of the nineties, and they hated each other. I think he started to get a reputation as a little bit of a dick.

• 8:56Chris Ryan?

There's like a whole Prince soundtrack.

• 8:58Bill Simmons?

Really bad. I think that really set him back, and he got passed by a bunch of white dudes that were younger than him, and were grabbing the parts.

• 9:04Chris Ryan?

Happens to the best of us.

• 9:05Speaker 02

But once people think that you're sexy. Once people think that you are kind of, oh, he's got this grizzled sexiness to him. That's when you go take your shot at the rom com. And if you're gonna take your shot with the rom com at that point, you're gonna take your shot with Julia Roberts, maybe, maybe it's a little early, maybe Meg Ryan, maybe somebody like that, but you're gonna take that shot and it didn't work for him because he can't pull it off.

• 9:27Bill Simmons?

It felt like in the seventies, him and Jeff Bridges were vying to be like the biggest heartthrobs going forward and neither of them totally made it as that kind of actor.

• 9:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, I think that.

• 9:38Bill Simmons?

Cause Bridges had King Kong, Nick Nolte was in Rich Man, Poor Man and North 1040 and just felt like he was gonna become this leading man.

• 9:45Chris Ryan?

It's not uncommon to see actors basically start out really hot. They're like kind of heartthrob young. And then there's like this middle period where they're just sort of like, nobody's taking me seriously enough. This happened to McConaughey recently enough. Where I think he felt like he was sort of trapped in rom coms and adventure movies. And it wasn't until Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective and.

• 10:09Bill Simmons?

He had to lose 50 pounds.

• 10:10Chris Ryan?

Well, yeah, that happens after, like, he's a rock star by the time Interstellar comes around.

• 10:14Speaker 02

So Interstellar is before or after Dallas Buyers Club?

• 10:17Bill Simmons?

It all starts with Dallas Buyers Club when he loses the weight and wins the Oscar. And then that opens up all this other stuff. Lesson is always if you lose 50 pounds and you can somehow still live, be in a decent movie, great things are gonna happen.

• 10:31Bill Simmons?

Eddie Murphy, this is his seventh rewatchable, which moves him into the official, like the standings in the newspaper. He's tied with Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Leo, Douglas, Ethan Hawke and Rene Russo.

• 10:42Speaker 02

  Ethan Hawke?

• 10:43Chris Ryan?

  Rene Russo.

• 10:44Bill Simmons?

Rene Russo was seven. It's just trailing Costner, Hoffman, Julie Roberts and Hackman by one now.

• 10:51Speaker 02

  Underappreciated actress.

• 10:52Chris Ryan?

We gotta do Nightcrawler soon so that we can get Renee back up, get her numbers up.

• 10:55Bill Simmons?

I honestly wanted to beef up his stats beyond argue about this movie and all the behind the scenes stuff that I think's fascinating about it. But I sent Van the Spin Magazine article. It was an interview with Spike Lee and Eddie Murphy. There's another Rolling Stone article. Did I send that one to you?

• 11:11Speaker 02

  No.

• 11:11Bill Simmons?

There's a Rolling Stone profile of him around then. This is the most fascinating time for Eddie where he's as successful as he's ever gonna be. He's as wealthy, you know, he's set for life.

• 11:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 11:23Bill Simmons?

He's minted, he's the bigot. It's him, Michael Jackson, Michael Jordan and Mike Tyson are basically the four biggest celebrities, I think.

• 11:32Bill Simmons?

And he's just miserable. And it's the classic, like, everyone's against me, what I would do now. And it comes out in these two pieces. And he talks about this movie and he says, um, he said this to Spin Magazine after the movie came out. And he said, the critical response to another 40 hours, I thought the movie was all right. And after doing a picture that was received both commercially and critically, as fucked up as Harlem Nights was, after doing a picture that was viewed as a shitty movie, I should have done a movie that was great as opposed to a movie that was all right. So he, he kinda knows it didn't hit the way it hit, and there's real reasons for that. Yeah. But I also feel like this happens sometimes with musicians, happens with athletes. We saw this happen to LeBron. Happened to A.J. Brown. Yeah.

• 12:16Bill Simmons?

Won the Super Bowl, he's like, I feel hollow. Might happen to Josh Allen right now.

• 12:20Speaker 02

  Oh, poor Josh Allen.

• 12:21Bill Simmons?

  I can't, I'm doing great, but I can't win.

• 12:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:25Bill Simmons?

And it feels that you could feel it in that piece with Spike, right?

• 12:27Speaker 02

This was one of the most angsty, revealing pieces I've ever read on a celebrity. I cannot believe I've never read this before. Between him and Spike, there's three things happening. Number one, Eddie Murphy is dealing with being this gigantic star and the professional and social responsibility of that. Spike is there as sort of your straight man, telling Eddie Murphy at different times what he thinks Eddie Murphy's responsibility should be, right?

• 12:54Bill Simmons?

And he had also been critical publicly of him before that.

• 12:57Speaker 02

Spike had been, he has been critical of almost everyone.

• 12:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah, but especially in 89. It was like, why doesn't Eddie use his power?

• 13:03Speaker 02

Why doesn't Eddie use his powers? Like, Eddie, shouldn't you be getting more people hired at studios and stuff like that? And Eddie is talking about the fact that there's just a tremendous amount of weight on him as a star. Like, fuck being as the biggest black star in the town.

• 13:18Bill Simmons?

  Sure.

• 13:18Speaker 02

Just as a star, as an entity. There's business, there's expectation, there are deals, and he's talking about-

• 13:26Bill Simmons?

There's family that want money and all that shit.

• 13:28Speaker 02

He's talking about the fact that there's this, and then there's this whole other part of it that stars do not have to deal with, like white stars, right? And at the end of it, he's like, you know, I just wanna be an entertainer. I just want to be able to entertain. Spike asked him, why you got pictures of Elvis everywhere? Like, what's wrong, what's up with you? And like, listening to him talk about it- I understand way better now why Eddie kinda went to the wilderness in the early 90s.

• 13:54Chris Ryan?

Well, it's also interesting to think about in terms of like, why he's never really come back. You know what I mean? Like, he never really did the stand-up tour, the stand-up comeback tour.

• 14:05Bill Simmons?

  Never did stand-up again.

• 14:06Chris Ryan?

Which at this point, probably at various moments over the last couple of like 10 years or so, could he have played SoFi? Like, I don't know. Like, Eddie Murphy could sell out any building in the world.

• 14:17Speaker 02

There are not enough seats in the world for him to step on stage and people not to come.

• 14:21Chris Ryan?

Right. And so he, and like, has kind of decided to sort of go into a late, I wouldn't call it retirement, but he's basically doing like, easy layup movies for streamers.

• 14:32Speaker 02

That started a long time ago.

• 14:34Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that's been, I would say 30 years of that.

• 14:36Speaker 02

  And Doctor Dolittle.

• 14:38Chris Ryan?

He's probably been doing that for way longer than he was the man.

• 14:42Speaker 02

Yeah. Cause the edge that he had, the way that Eddie made you laugh, like, very few people, which is why it was interesting to see him chase the Oscar at times when he did.

• 14:54Bill Simmons?

  The Dreamgirls, yeah.

• 14:55Speaker 02

Or even coming back with Dolomite and trying to like, Jenny that up. There was just very few performers that could do what he could do, that had that type of on-screen charisma, could make you laugh like that, but then also could dial it back and control a scene, and it weighed on him. Like, it's, when you read this, he talks about the fact, I didn't even remember that Coming to America wasn't critically well-received. It's amongst the best comedies in the entire decade.

• 15:19Bill Simmons?

I didn't know how true that was. He probably had a couple of views. It's funny, cause he was like, probably in my top three all-time favorites. And I never knew how angry he was in the late 80s. And now you look back and like, he goes in the Oscars, and the 1989 Oscars, and talks about how, how the representation was so bad with nominations, the whole thing. And everybody's like, what the fuck did he do that for?

• 15:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 15:45Bill Simmons?

What's up with him? What's up his ass? It was like, kind of the response to it. So he does that, he does this Rolling Stones thing, same thing, and then this. And all of it is about this, basically too much was on my plate, too much was thrown to me. I thought this would feel better. I thought being this successful would actually be fun, it's not. And basically, he's trapped in this little circle with like, six people around him.

• 16:11Bill Simmons?

He's not around people every day. He doesn't trust anyone. He said women try to sue him. He had the Art Buckwald claim that he stole Coming to America from him. And he was just bitter at everybody. And I think that makes sense when you see the movies they ended up doing in the 90s where eventually he just retreats. And does like Nutty Professor and Easy Stuff where he can just play characters and kind of low ceiling stuff.

• 16:30Chris Ryan?

When you close your eyes and you think of Eddie Murphy and you think of like the the best moment of Eddie Murphy, what is the the character or the movie that comes to mind?

• 16:40Speaker 02

Uh, Prince of King from Coming to America.

• 16:43Bill Simmons?

I think Eddie would say that. I think I probably enjoyed the Beverly Hills Cop one Eddie the most because it was just felt like it was 22.

• 16:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:51Bill Simmons?

And it just felt like you this was this was like gonna be the guy.

• 16:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 16:55Bill Simmons?

Like for years and decades and this the guy could do anything.

• 16:59Chris Ryan?

I probably agree with you. I I probably feel like at 48 hours, it's like seeing like like seeing Caleb Williams throw throw passes where you're just like, I can't believe this. Like, I can't believe this guy can pull this off.

• 17:11Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 17:12Chris Ryan?

And it's kind of interesting to watch another 48 hours in that lens through that lens and see like the brief flashes.

• 17:19Bill Simmons?

  Totally.

• 17:19Chris Ryan?

  Of when it comes back.

• 17:21Bill Simmons?

Like when he's calling the guys for the money.

• 17:22Chris Ryan?

  On the payphone. Yeah.

• 17:23Bill Simmons?

On the payphone. It's like, this should have been in the movie. What are you guys doing?

• 17:27Speaker 02

But even the one of my favorite.

• 17:29Chris Ryan?

He wanted me to tell you he hates cops.

• 17:30Speaker 02

That that right there, that's Eddie Murphy.

• 17:32Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 17:33Speaker 02

And he he's fucking with this guy the whole time and you think that he is going to end up getting Kate a ticket. But really the joke is on the cop. At the end, he tells him and the cop's too scared of it.

• 17:43Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 17:44Speaker 02

So, look, when you look at the early 90s, we've done Boomerang. Like, but if you look at Distinguished Gentleman and some of those other movies and then the abomination that is Beverly Hills Cop 3. It just like that movie is almost.

• 17:58Chris Ryan?

Is that the one at the theme park?

• 17:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, like that movie.

• 18:00Bill Simmons?

And by the way, in one of the interviews, he's talking about, I would never do Beverly Hills Cop 3. Like, he's like, they want him, just throw money at me. I'm never gonna sell out like that. And then five years later, it sold out.

• 18:08Speaker 02

Yeah. Boomerang is to me like a a perfect film. I love Boomerang.

• 18:12Bill Simmons?

The first Eddie one we did together.

• 18:13Speaker 02

  Right.

• 18:13Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 18:14Speaker 02

But like even in that one, you could tell he's trying to be different. He's the straight man in that movie.

• 18:18Chris Ryan?

He wants to be Cary Grant.

• 18:19Speaker 02

Wants to be Cary Grant. He wants to be taken seriously.

• 18:21Chris Ryan?

I think that it's like a thing that happens to a lot of people who get famous for doing a particular thing. And then it's like Eddie Murphy also wanted to be a musician and Eddie Murphy wanted to be a viable action star and Eddie Murphy wanted to be, you know what I mean? And it's like, everybody was just telling him.

• 18:35Bill Simmons?

And he wanted to be a singer.

• 18:35Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he wanted to be a, a, a pinup like, like ho- old Hollywood star.

• 18:40Bill Simmons?

  He wanted to be Elvis.

• 18:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:43Bill Simmons?

It's a tough one because I do think he was among the most talented people of the last forty plus years. Like he, he was the most overqualified SNL person they've ever had. And Will Ferrell's probably second. Um, everything went right for him for, I would say, seven years with his movie career, right? And by the time Come to America comes out, he's still like twenty-eight. He had, he's not even really an adult yet.

• 19:13Bill Simmons?

He's only six years older than Drake May. But he says in this spin thing, and this is after Tyson lost to Douglas in Japan, which is interesting parallel to Eddie because Tyson had the same meteoric rise. And so he says, what happened to Mike Tyson? You get so big, people don't understand what happened. How can this motherfucker never lose? With Mike, when he lost and became human, in retrospect, I think doing something like the last two films I've done, maybe it's good that it makes you lose a step. The pressure's off you to be this perfect motherfucker. And then he talks about his career and he says, I was probably getting comfortable with my position, not appreciated. And the position I was in, I went through a thing. I had seven pictures, back-to-back hit pictures. Nobody had done that.

• 19:54Bill Simmons?

So he was like acutely aware of like,

• 19:58Bill Simmons?

nobody's done what I'm doing right now.

• 19:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 20:00Bill Simmons?

And he couldn't sustain it. But I think part of the reason you can't sustain it is, you, you just start, when you become that famous, you're just not a normal person anymore.

• 20:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, and also.

• 20:08Bill Simmons?

I don't care if you're a musician, actor, athlete, whoever.

• 20:11Chris Ryan?

I also wonder whether with his style of comedy and when you watch him on SNL and when you watch him in those early movies.

• 20:16Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 20:17Chris Ryan?

You feel like you're like, I, there's no safety net. I'm floating and I'm, I'm, we're floating with this guy. Like, anything can happen. And so once you kind of like grow past that point where you're connected to the things that made you who you were in the first place, I wonder if for, specifically for stand-ups, if it starts to become a little bit, like if you're not Seinfeld and making like quotidian observations about everyday life that everybody has, if you're Eddie Murphy and everything is energy and everything is channeling a certain sensibility, I, I wonder if you can sustain that.

• 20:50Speaker 02

I don't think you can as a stand up, but I definitely don't think you can as a stand up who is also a gigantic movie star.

• 20:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 20:57Speaker 02

  Like they're stand.

• 20:57Bill Simmons?

  Nobody's ever done it.

• 20:58Speaker 02

There are stand ups that get into their 50s when they are primarily known for that. And they're able to like pull the energy of their cultural observations. Like, you know, split them over three or four different specials over four or five years, right? But, man, when you were watching Eddie Murphy in a movie like Beverly Hills Cop. He is the comedy in the film. I mean, don't get me wrong. There are other people that are funny, other funny things that happen, but every single scene is an incredibly heavy lift.

• 21:27Bill Simmons?

  Yep.

• 21:27Speaker 02

It's a real heavy lift. Eddie's doing characters. Eddie's being suave and he's being kind of like a rascal, like all of that stuff. He's doing that in every film and it comes to a head and come into America. He talks about it in that piece where there's legitimately a scene where he's playing for different characters.

• 21:44Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 21:45Speaker 02

He's playing off of himself. That's how insulated he's.

• 21:47Bill Simmons?

And he was mad that one of the reviewers said he was lazy in the movie. He's like, I literally played everybody in a scene for five minutes, right?

• 21:54Speaker 02

Um, and then he changed it. He, he wants to do less and for four or five years, we don't even notice. Like we, we notice that the movies aren't the same, but we don't notice that Eddie Murphy isn't Eddie Murphy.

• 22:05Chris Ryan?

Interesting. I was curious what you would say about a parallel career like Robin Williams. Now, Robin Williams probably never as famous as Eddie Murphy was at the beginning of his career, right? Like he does more come in the.

• 22:17Bill Simmons?

I would say more come in the was a bigger show than Saturday Night Live at that point. I think the audience was bigger for.

• 22:24Chris Ryan?

Were people like Robin Williams is like.

• 22:27Bill Simmons?

They didn't know his comedy as much and he went right to movies and was immediately trying to be a movie guy.

• 22:31Chris Ryan?

And did, and pretty quickly within the movies started doing serious roles.

• 22:36Bill Simmons?

Right. He, he moved to like World of Cards and Garp is probably the first one. I think the thing with Eddie, he's doing three things at the same time. He's saving SNL by himself where he's also one of the only black stars. We talked about this in past pods. He's one of the only black stars on TV in the early eighties. So he's got the whole burden of that. He's replacing Richard Pryor as the guy as a stand up.

• 22:57Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 22:57Bill Simmons?

Right? And Pryor's self combust thing and he blows himself up. What was he, what was he doing?

• 23:03Speaker 02

  What are you talking?

• 23:03Bill Simmons?

When he, when he blew himself up, what was he smoking? Was it, wasn't crack?

• 23:07Chris Ryan?

  It was freebasing.

• 23:08Bill Simmons?

Was he freebasing? That's what it was. Um, but he blows himself up.

• 23:12Chris Ryan?

Stopped that to be like, what?

• 23:13Speaker 02

Well, I couldn't remember. Man, what is the thing that you guys smoke when you burn yourselves up?

• 23:17Bill Simmons?

  Shut up.

• 23:18Speaker 02

  What is it?

• 23:19Chris Ryan?

The Rockefeller Awards were what? What happened there?

• 23:23Bill Simmons?

  But he's also older.

• 23:25Speaker 02

  Right.

• 23:26Bill Simmons?

So Eddie takes that spot. But then he also takes the number one comedy movie actor spot. He's, all these things happen in, in three years. Any person would be happy with one of those three things. Chris Rock only was able to do one of those three things. And we're like, Chris Rock, what a career.

• 23:43Speaker 02

  Genius of our time, yeah.

• 23:43Bill Simmons?

The generational comic. Chappelle, it's like Chappelle, oh my God, generational. Eddie, that was one of the three things he did. And I, I think that's just a lot.

• 23:51Chris Ryan?

Yeah, and it's also just like Eddie Murphy never had a Good Morning Vietnam where you translate your standup or your comic skills perfectly into a dramatic role. But Good Morning Vietnam was nowhere near as big of a movie as the least popular Eddie Murphy movie of the eighties.

• 24:07Bill Simmons?

Yeah, this movie made a hundred and fifty million dollars.

• 24:09Chris Ryan?

  And it's reviled.

• 24:10Bill Simmons?

And was considered to be disappointing.

• 24:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:12Speaker 02

  So he speaks-

• 24:12Bill Simmons?

  Nineteen on Rotten Tomatoes.

• 24:13Speaker 02

  That's crazy. He's, it's not that bad.

• 24:16Bill Simmons?

  Nineteen.

• 24:16Chris Ryan?

  This movie's good.

• 24:18Speaker 02

I like, I like this. I, I, I like it. Hold on, he speaks to this in the piece though.

• 24:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 24:22Speaker 02

He talks about the fact, because, you know, Robin Williams worked with auteurs and different directors and stuff like that. Eddie talks about the fact that he didn't and really couldn't do that. He was like, he's talking to Spike Lee, and by the way, they promised to work together in this piece. They never do.

• 24:41Bill Simmons?

  Sure.

• 24:42Speaker 02

  It never happens.

• 24:42Bill Simmons?

It's so funny, they spend like, over there like, yeah, yeah, when we were in, never, not even like a tiny role.

• 24:48Speaker 02

And what he's essentially talking about is the, how the, the seriousness of Spike Lee and who Spike Lee was as a black director at that time. The responsibility that Spike has and the responsibility that Eddie has as being the guy that everybody likes. And it seemed like he was saying that he couldn't do stuff like what Robin Williams was doing. He couldn't take those chances. That wasn't what they wanted from him. He's like, they send in workman directors in to do some of these movies and I'll do those movies with them. But like, as far as me working with like really important directors and that stuff like that, it's like, that's not what I'm doing. And that's kind of not what they want me to do. They want me to do Eddie Murphy pictures for popular audiences.

• 25:32Bill Simmons?

There's like a burden. I almost wonder like, cause he does the Oscars thing in eighty-nine, right? And that's this renaissance for, you have Spike, you have Robert Townsend, the Wayans brothers are coming in and there, and there's this whole- Generational thing, hip hop's coming in, there's this whole generational thing shifting. And you could almost feel like Eddie felt like he was over here in the mass market area.

• 25:55Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 25:56Bill Simmons?

Of like belonging to everybody and was kind of, but I still should be over here too. And that's why he's speaking out during these two years and then it's over. And then he has the, the thing with the, with the picking up the prostitute in, in 1995.

• 26:11Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 26:12Bill Simmons?

After that, he, he stops doing interviews. I mean, he's, he basically disappears after that.

• 26:16Chris Ryan?

  And you only.

• 26:16Bill Simmons?

It was like some promotion for movies and that's it.

• 26:19Chris Ryan?

You'll get every once in a while, a little story of like Eddie Murphy, Quentin Tarantino, something, you know?

• 26:25Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 26:26Chris Ryan?

Whether it was, I think Tarantino was like, he was thinking about Eddie Murphy for Pulp Fiction or something like that. But then there's been a more recent story of.

• 26:33Bill Simmons?

All the good directors seem like they've been fascinated by him.

• 26:36Chris Ryan?

Quentin had like a Beverly Hills Cop pitch that Eddie Murphy was like, that's actually pretty good.

• 26:40Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 26:41Speaker 02

  He becomes.

• 26:41Bill Simmons?

PTA I think was in on him too, trying to get him.

• 26:44Speaker 02

He becomes that guy because like those directors obviously grew up on him.

• 26:48Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 26:49Speaker 02

But also it's like, there was so much that he could do.

• 26:52Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 26:53Speaker 02

And I bet that people looked at him and was like, yo, uh, this guy is better than A Haunted Mansion. This is Eddie Murphy. He's better than.

• 27:02Bill Simmons?

Well, didn't you feel that way with Distinguished Gentlemen? I remember leaving the theater and being like, god damn it.

• 27:06Speaker 02

  It's just like, it's a stupid movie.

• 27:07Bill Simmons?

Yeah. It's like, god damn it. How did we get to this point?

• 27:10Speaker 02

There are interesting films in there. Like, you know, uh, Boomerang is interesting because he goes all black cast for Boomerang.

• 27:17Bill Simmons?

That's the best thing he did that decade.

• 27:19Speaker 02

Absolutely. But then like there's Bowfinger, which is an interesting movie.

• 27:22Chris Ryan?

  Really like Bowfinger.

• 27:23Speaker 02

It's, it's an interesting movie. It's a funny movie. That's Eddie trying to.

• 27:26Bill Simmons?

He tries to do Metro, doesn't quite work.

• 27:28Speaker 02

Doesn't quite work, doesn't quite work. And then he never does the thing. He never, and not until Dreamgirls. He doesn't have the Good Will Hunting moment. He doesn't have sort of the Jim Carrey, uh.

• 27:38Bill Simmons?

Like, do you think he would, like, could he have done Training Day?

• 27:42Speaker 02

  No.

• 27:42Bill Simmons?

Could he have done He Got Game?

• 27:44Speaker 02

  No.

• 27:45Chris Ryan?

  I don't think.

• 27:45Speaker 02

That's where it's tough. You saw him shoot the basketball in this movie.

• 27:47Bill Simmons?

  Well, right.

• 27:48Chris Ryan?

He could have done Truman Show.

• 27:50Speaker 02

  Could have done Truman Show.

• 27:51Chris Ryan?

I think so. I think, I think. And this is gonna sound really stupid, but something like Cast Away, like there's

• 27:58Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 27:59Chris Ryan?

  An element of like,

• 28:00Bill Simmons?

  Oh, wow.

• 28:01Chris Ryan?

What are, what are the things that you, would you watch Eddie Murphy on his own on an island for an hour and a half? I would, you know, now would he, would it have the same gravitas, would it like, what would happen in that film? I don't know, but like, it is, it is, it is a really sad-

• 28:15Bill Simmons?

  That's a great idea.

• 28:16Chris Ryan?

Thing to look back and be like-

• 28:17Bill Simmons?

  Can we just do that?

• 28:18Speaker 02

Can I, I'm thinking about most roles that Hanks played, you know, besides-

• 28:23Bill Simmons?

He didn't sleep us in Seattle?

• 28:25Speaker 02

Maybe, maybe he could have done like-

• 28:28Chris Ryan?

He could have done big though.

• 28:29Speaker 02

He could have done big, he could have also done like, uh, not only their own, but think about Philadelphia, where Hanks is in the Denzel Washington part.

• 28:39Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 28:39Speaker 02

And Eddie is in the Tom Hanks part. That would have been, that would have fucked people's head up.

• 28:45Bill Simmons?

What's, what's your Eddie relationship, Craig? You're like two generations removed.

• 28:50Speaker 03

Unfortunately, I think the relationship with Eddie is that I knew he was famous first before I had a relationship with a specific movie. I mean, to be honest, he made, he made like Dr. Dolittle and that's probably like the first thing I saw with Eddie Murphy.

• 29:01Bill Simmons?

That's like most people under 35.

• 29:02Speaker 03

It's pretty remarkable that for a guy as talented as him, who was the biggest star in the world, his career does still feel like a missed opportunity a little bit. It's like, it's like Aaron Rodgers only having one ring. You're like, that's, he was the most talented quarterback I've ever seen and he only has one ring. That's not right.

• 29:17Bill Simmons?

He should have won at least one, ask her.

• 29:18Chris Ryan?

But like if I, there's, there's part of me that is still like, if Eddie Murphy started a podcast tomorrow, it would be like the biggest podcast in the world.

• 29:25Speaker 02

  He's still, he's-

• 29:25Chris Ryan?

Do you know what I mean? Like there's, there's like so many-

• 29:27Bill Simmons?

  Would you see the documentary?

• 29:28Speaker 02

  I did.

• 29:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 29:30Bill Simmons?

It was interesting because it was all the good and bad of where Eddie is now, where it was a very safe, controlled documentary that was afraid to really go anywhere, but I was completely riveted the whole time.

• 29:41Chris Ryan?

And he's a good raconteur, yeah.

• 29:42Bill Simmons?

And I loved it and he told great stories and I had a great time.

• 29:44Speaker 02

And you still wanna love him whenever you see him. You know something else that happened? Now that I think about it is Hollywood really split Eddie into like thirds in the 90s.

• 29:54Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 29:54Speaker 02

Like they took the charm of Eddie and then that was Will Smith. Like almost anything that Will Smith was doing, you could have imagined Eddie doing. They took the straight up.

• 30:03Bill Simmons?

Like Bad Boys would have been Eddie 10 years earlier.

• 30:05Speaker 02

Men in Black, right? You know what I mean? He had to play a little bit younger than him, but still. And then they took like Rush Hour. Like they wanted Eddie to be like in Rush Hour. Like that was supposed to be Eddie Murphy, but Chris Tucker was like occupying that space for a little while. But in the 80s, there was one guy at the top who could do all of that stuff that those guys can do. Like when you split them apart.

• 30:25Bill Simmons?

Well, yeah, he never was in like Independence Day or Armageddon, any of those type of movies. Cause he was kind of too famous to be one of the seven guys. You get trapped. You're like your own franchise.

• 30:35Chris Ryan?

Some of those movies started to do a little bit of Moneyball where it's like, well, we'll get John Malkovich to be the bad guy in Con Air because his price point's probably not going to be as high as Eddie Murphy or something like that. You know what I mean?

• 30:46Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Well, in this movie, in 48 Hours, one, he was paid $200,000. In this one, he was paid $12 million plus points. He actually came up with the story and used the pseudonym for it. Talked Nolte into it. Nolte called Walter Hill, the director, who we'll talk about in a second. And he said, what do you think, Walt?

• 31:09Bill Simmons?

And then Nick said, if we do one and it stinks, we're still batting 500.

• 31:14Speaker 02

  That's funny.

• 31:15Bill Simmons?

But he said it and then Nick Nolte was, eh, if we do one and it stinks.

• 31:18Chris Ryan?

  Not a bad life lesson.

• 31:22Bill Simmons?

And Walter Hill said, a lot of folks will say, I'm just doing it for the money. What I want to know is what do I think? Why do I think they made the first one? So the most interesting thing about this movie is something we'll talk about right after the break. This episode is brought to you by Viori. All right, let's talk about a category we appreciate. • 32:40Bill Simmons?

All right, so we mentioned, this is a complicated rewatchables because it's rewatchable, but it is among the movies that made me the maddest. And I didn't fully realize till we did the research CR, that this should have been a two and a half hour long movie.

• 32:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 32:54Bill Simmons?

That got cut to 120. And then a week before the release, Paramount panicked because Total Recall had done really well.

• 33:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:03Bill Simmons?

And was short. And they said, we gotta get this down to 95. And they just fucking brought the chainsaw out and chopped it. And this is the reason the plot is so nonsensical. And it's like, wait, how do they know? And that's why.

• 33:17Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 33:18Bill Simmons?

Because they just took out scenes that would have explained shit.

• 33:20Chris Ryan?

Definitely chopped this thing to shit. I am a little curious how none of that has ever gotten on any DVD or on YouTube, or there's never been like.

• 33:31Bill Simmons?

25 minutes is like six scenes.

• 33:33Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 33:36Speaker 02

I mean, the, the conceit of the movie, 48 hours, that ended up on the cutting room floor as well.

• 33:42Chris Ryan?

Yes. The idea that Jack has a deadline.

• 33:45Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 33:45Chris Ryan?

  To find the Iceman.

• 33:46Bill Simmons?

Totally cut out. He's, he, and it's in one of the trailers. He tells Reggie, I only have 48 hours. We gotta find the Iceman or I'm going to jail.

• 33:54Speaker 02

  Gone.

• 33:54Bill Simmons?

  Just gone.

• 33:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:56Bill Simmons?

Apparently Cruz, Kio's buddy in this, has a whole arc that's gone. And the guy who played Kio explains the whole thing. And he said he lost every major scene he had. It felt like getting kicked in the stomach. I was the third lead. I looked like a dressed extra. Um, there's no mention of 48 Hours in the film anywhere. And this is just how it went.

• 34:20Chris Ryan?

So when I read that quote from Brian James about playing Keo, right?

• 34:25Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 34:25Chris Ryan?

I thought to some extent, they may have made that decision to maintain the twist of like who Iceman is, and that's why they cut his stuff out?

• 34:38Bill Simmons?

  I mean, it's not even a twist.

• 34:41Chris Ryan?

  Well, you just.

• 34:42Bill Simmons?

It's, it would be like right now, Van was like, I'm, I'm the Iceman. It's like, what?

• 34:48Chris Ryan?

I've been writing JD Vance's tweets.

• 34:52Speaker 02

That would be ridiculous. No, it worked on me when I was a kid, though.

• 34:55Chris Ryan?

Oh, I didn't care at all when I was a kid. This is also, you guys got to understand, this was an era where I, we didn't really pay that much attention.

• 35:02Bill Simmons?

  Nah, man.

• 35:03Chris Ryan?

  No, it is true.

• 35:03Speaker 02

Like Tango and Cash get set up in two scenes. They put it all together. They go to jail, like whole trial happens, they go to jail and like, we're just rocking and rolling.

• 35:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 35:13Speaker 02

That's what you tell me the movie's about? Let's have some fun.

• 35:15Bill Simmons?

Yeah, the problem for me is I was a sophomore in college and 48 Hours is my favorite movie.

• 35:19Speaker 02

Right, so you were looking at it differently.

• 35:20Bill Simmons?

And they do another 48 Hours and it's like, Keo is the Iceman. It's like, no.

• 35:26Bill Simmons?

You fucked now with when I watched the first movie and he's helping Jack with Reggie and like, why would he help him if he was the Iceman? Why would he help him in any way, shape or form?

• 35:36Chris Ryan?

Maybe one of the scenes that got cut is, is the Iceman's late arriving. Like it's only after 48 Hours that he becomes the Iceman, you know?

• 35:43Bill Simmons?

No, but that's not true because Reggie's like, remember that money we took? 450,000? Took that out the Iceman, the guy who bought your car. So that makes you the dumbest motherfucker. Like that's so, Iceman had to be going in like 1980.

• 35:55Chris Ryan?

But is this Red, is this Eddie Murphy's idea? If he does the story?

• 35:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah, but maybe it made sense with the extra 45 minutes.

• 36:02Speaker 02

I think that it's more of a movie movie, like in terms of the plot making sense and all of that stuff with the extra time in it, but it, it probably is lesser, honestly.

• 36:14Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 36:15Speaker 02

It probably, this movie moves very.

• 36:17Bill Simmons?

This movie might be Heat, we'll never know. It's gonna be a Michael Mann movie.

• 36:22Chris Ryan?

Well, you joke, but we haven't like said why we like this movie yet. This movie is still a Walter Hill movie shot by Matthew Leonetti.

• 36:30Bill Simmons?

Just about to go into that.

• 36:31Chris Ryan?

  Fucking awesome.

• 36:32Bill Simmons?

This movie is such a great hang.

• 36:33Chris Ryan?

And it's got, it still has the banger James Horner score.

• 36:36Speaker 02

I had it like oddly well directed, real sense of tension and danger in these scenes.

• 36:42Bill Simmons?

  Great villains?

• 36:43Speaker 02

  Great villains.

• 36:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 36:44Speaker 02

Totally fucking crazy guys that you are actually scared of, that represent danger whenever they're around. And it moves so quickly. I don't know how it would, if it would move that same way if we had more time with all of these characters.

• 36:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 36:57Bill Simmons?

It's the opening scene, it's filmed like it's like a fucking Oscar winner.

• 37:02Chris Ryan?

I have that in a category coming up.

• 37:05Bill Simmons?

It's really good. Walter Hill, this was his last hurrah. After this, he had Trespass, Geronimo, Wild Bill, Last Man Standing. C R and I.

• 37:13Chris Ryan?

Trespass, Geronimo, and Wild Bill all have things to recommend about them.

• 37:16Speaker 02

  I like those movies.

• 37:17Bill Simmons?

Well, I'm just saying, none of them did well.

• 37:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 37:19Speaker 02

  Trespass, I really like.

• 37:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 37:21Speaker 02

A Tres- Trespass, a treasure hunt in the hood? How have they not done that again? Trespass, I love that movie.

• 37:30Bill Simmons?

  It bombed.

• 37:31Speaker 02

  It did.

• 37:32Chris Ryan?

  Not in my high school.

• 37:34Bill Simmons?

  It's funny.

• 37:35Speaker 02

You got big on Judgment Night in your high school?

• 37:38Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but like Trespass was like the idea of Trespass. We were like, this is the best idea for a movie I've ever heard.

• 37:44Speaker 02

  Loved Trespass.

• 37:45Bill Simmons?

I went and found the 1990 premiere magazines to see if they did another 48 hours and they only had a summer movie preview. And they were doing predictions and they called Walter, Walter over the hill.

• 37:56Speaker 02

  Aw shit.

• 37:56Bill Simmons?

That's what he got in another 48 hours. Fuck that. Um, C R and I met him. The Running Man screening. He was sitting right behind us and we were probably like 20% too excited.

• 38:06Chris Ryan?

Uh, we were like Chris Farley in SNL like, oh, and then you did this.

• 38:10Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 38:11Speaker 02

  Remember, remember, uh, the Warriors?

• 38:13Chris Ryan?

I was like, Mr. Hill, I'm a huge fan of Extreme Prejudice.

• 38:18Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I think he was flattered.

• 38:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, sure.

• 38:21Bill Simmons?

But yeah, so he did Warriors in 48 Hours. After that, it doesn't really matter, does it? You come up with those two?

• 38:29Chris Ryan?

He also did Long Riders, Southern Comfort. I mean, he's done so many good movies.

• 38:33Speaker 02

Warriors though stands the test of time as much as any movie, man.

• 38:36Bill Simmons?

We're bringing that back because when we did it the first time in the rewatchables, we didn't have a lot of the categories.

• 38:41Chris Ryan?

  The re-Warrior.

• 38:42Bill Simmons?

Shay didn't really like it. That was one of the only times I forgot to make sure.

• 38:47Speaker 02

  How could that be possible?

• 38:48Bill Simmons?

Shay was like, fine with it. I thought he loved it for some reason and then he was kind of like, yeah.

• 38:53Speaker 02

Shay Serrano coated movie maybe ever.

• 38:55Bill Simmons?

I was stunned. I just assumed that he loved it. And he was like lukewarm on it. So C R and I had to carry it.

• 39:03Speaker 02

  Shay, had to carry Shay.

• 39:05Bill Simmons?

We had to carry it. We talked him into it. By the end of the pod, I think he liked it.

• 39:09Chris Ryan?

I think he enjoyed our enthusiasm, for sure.

• 39:12Bill Simmons?

  What a great movie.

• 39:14Speaker 02

  Just like amazing.

• 39:15Bill Simmons?

Talk about, what did I say? It was 89 minutes?

• 39:20Chris Ryan?

  The rare sub 90.

• 39:21Bill Simmons?

I mean, it might be for batting average slash advanced metrics, pound for pound per minute, the greatest action movie ever.

• 39:28Speaker 02

  It's a piece of culture.

• 39:30Bill Simmons?

  They create an entire universe.

• 39:32Speaker 02

Yeah, it becomes more. It's like a weird, drugged out, postmodern treatise on the crime written New York of the 1970s and gangs and all of that. It's like a beautifully fucked up dystopian novel almost.

• 39:50Chris Ryan?

It is remarkable they did that in 90 minutes. Like, it's also like we still in 2025, 2026 are like, oh, that's like the Warriors. That's so, like, that's so Warriors. Like, it's still a touch.

• 40:01Bill Simmons?

You know what's amazing about the Warriors? They never fucked with it. Nobody was like, we're remaking the Warriors. It was like there would have actually been riots in the street if they tried to remake that movie. It's like, it's almost like remaking The Godfather or some of these movies, nobody would ever have touched.

• 40:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:16Bill Simmons?

The Warriors is like that. And you would think that would have, they would have remade that four times already, but stayed away.

• 40:22Bill Simmons?

Bunch of that guys in this movie is, we mentioned Brian James.

• 40:26Bill Simmons?

  Kevin Taggy?

• 40:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:28Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, I like.

• 40:28Chris Ryan?

From The Christmas Adventurers. Advanced favorite film.

• 40:32Bill Simmons?

Owned, owned the double deuce. Needed some help.

• 40:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:35Speaker 02

  Yeah. He was a good.

• 40:36Bill Simmons?

He needed to find the best cooler in the South.

• 40:39Speaker 02

He was the good guy in that one, but he's got such a smirky fucked up face that when you see him in other shit, you're like, there's the guy that you're not.

• 40:46Bill Simmons?

It's funny because he was in Emergency, which was one of my first favorite TV shows in the seventies. And he was just like a Noah Wiley type of seventies good guy.

• 40:54Chris Ryan?

Should we address the fact that Neil Fisher emailed our, our, our email inbox to explain the last shot of Roadhouse to us?

• 41:02Bill Simmons?

Oh, yeah. What was that? I don't remember that.

• 41:05Chris Ryan?

Big fan of the pod, been listening since the beginning. Loved the mailbag episode. And when I heard you mention Roadhouse and you looking for an answer, a question to a question, my ears perked up. I'm a filmmaker and author from Chicago. My first book was released in 2021. It was about Swayze. While writing it, I was in contact with a bunch of Swayze collaborators, like his Lisa Wit- his widow Lisa. And I became with Roadhouse alums, Marshall Teague.

• 41:29Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 41:30Chris Ryan?

And director Rowdy Harrington. I asked Rowdy if the skinny dipping scene was shot to be used in the middle of the movie since Cody is there, or if it's something else.

• 41:38Bill Simmons?

  The blind guy.

• 41:39Chris Ryan?

Rowdy says that always was meant to be the end of the movie and he loves the final song. When the night comes falling from the sky. Hope that helps.

• 41:52Bill Simmons?

I got this mail back question about how the blind guy was just in the skinny dipping scene. And it was like, did they skinny dip in front of him because they couldn't see?

• 42:00Speaker 02

  Yeah, he couldn't see anything.

• 42:01Bill Simmons?

But it's like a little Easter egg.

• 42:03Speaker 02

  Have we, have we?

• 42:04Bill Simmons?

There's one more that guy we gotta talk about.

• 42:05Speaker 02

  Okay, go for it.

• 42:06Bill Simmons?

Andrew Diboff, who plays Gans's brother.

• 42:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:09Bill Simmons?

Also the bad guy in Toy Soldiers.

• 42:11Chris Ryan?

  What a run for him.

• 42:11Bill Simmons?

Movie we did a couple of years ago on the rewatchables, me and Kyle Brandt. And that's really it for him.

• 42:16Speaker 02

Wait, no, no, no, no, no. He also was, wasn't he in, okay, so we're talking about the guy with the longer hair and the.

• 42:22Chris Ryan?

  Cherry.

• 42:22Speaker 02

Uh, yeah, like a low down, dirty shame.

• 42:26Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 42:27Speaker 02

Remember a Low Down Dirty Shame?

• 42:28Bill Simmons?

  Early 90s, run for him.

• 42:29Speaker 02

Low Down Dirty Shame, he plays, I remember he says, uh, he's trying to get under Shane's, Shane's, uh, skin.

• 42:35Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 42:36Speaker 02

About the beautiful, top-tier gorgeous, uh, Sally Whitfield.

• 42:42Bill Simmons?

  Um.

• 42:42Speaker 02

Oh. Yeah, oh my god, shout out to.

• 42:45Bill Simmons?

  Yes.

• 42:45Speaker 02

DeAndre, man. But like, he's, he's talking about it and he just looks at Shane, he goes, yes, you know, she loved to fuck.

• 42:53Speaker 02

That's what he says about it, he goes, cause he's trying to get under his skin, cause that's his girl.

• 42:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 42:56Speaker 02

And he's like, he, he's going out, he's like, yes, she was, she was, wasn't, she loved to fuck. And I was like, god damn. Just tell somebody, your ex, hey, I'm with your girl now, just to let you know.

• 43:06Bill Simmons?

  Jesus.

• 43:06Speaker 02

She loved to fuck. It's a scene in Low Down Dirty Shame, he's in the movie.

• 43:10Bill Simmons?

Coralback Scale, the Century Club for Craig. Hundred minutes is, uh, that's the curve, one way or the other. We're at 95 minutes here, Craig, we're a plus five.

• 43:22Chris Ryan?

I know, plus five. Perfect length. But we could have had like a 140 minute movie.

• 43:27Bill Simmons?

He was psyched for the other version.

• 43:29Chris Ryan?

You could have given me five more minutes or something like that, but this is right in the sweet spot, cut, necessarily.

• 43:34Bill Simmons?

Fifty million dollar budget made 153.5 million, Roger Ebert, two stars.

• 43:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:39Bill Simmons?

  I can't, I can't, can't fight back on this.

• 43:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:42Bill Simmons?

He said, you know how sometimes in a dream, you'll see these familiar scenes and faces floating in and out of focus and you're not sure they'll connect? Another Forty Eight Hours is a movie that feels the same way. Broad outlines, villains, cops, all basic movie stereotypes, what exactly is happening here? If it does nothing else, Another Forty Eight Hours reminds us that Murphy is a big, genuine talent. Now it's time for him to make a good movie.

• 44:06Speaker 02

  God damn.

• 44:07Chris Ryan?

He challenged him. I mean, I would, I would say he does.

• 44:10Speaker 02

  Boomerang is a great movie.

• 44:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 44:12Bill Simmons?

Uh, Watch Party, out of all the possible scenarios, five o'clocker for me.

• 44:17Chris Ryan?

  It's a, it's maybe, it's maybe a top five, five o'clocker.

• 44:21Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 44:21Chris Ryan?

It's exactly what you would want. You would go.

• 44:23Bill Simmons?

  Perfect.

• 44:24Chris Ryan?

Back in the day, maybe you get three trailers, so say, five o'clock movie starts around 5:15, 5:20.

• 44:30Bill Simmons?

You're home in time for dinner.

• 44:31Chris Ryan?

  Home for dinner.

• 44:31Bill Simmons?

Yeah. It's maybe a 4:55 start, movie kicks in around 5:08.

• 44:37Chris Ryan?

  You get out.

• 44:37Bill Simmons?

You're out of there by 5:50.

• 44:38Chris Ryan?

Early enough for young Bill Simmons to take you out and tell you all the problems with Iceman continuity, you know?

• 44:44Bill Simmons?

That would have happened. I would have been like, can we go get a Dunkin' Donuts? I, I gotta explain how dumb this Kyo thing is.

• 44:50Speaker 02

Why it didn't work for me.

• 44:51Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Can we get a iced coffee? Uh, most rewatchable scene.

• 44:56Bill Simmons?

I, I, my first one isn't until 26 minutes into the movie.

• 44:59Chris Ryan?

  Oh, really?

• 45:00Bill Simmons?

Unless you want to go with the opening.

• 45:01Speaker 02

I like the opening. I like the, the opening. I just have so many questions about it. Like, who goes to that bar? Like, who, who frequents that bar in the middle of the desert, Nowhere's for bikers or something like that?

• 45:11Bill Simmons?

  Where is it?

• 45:12Chris Ryan?

Yeah, is there, is there a desert in, where do you think that?

• 45:17Bill Simmons?

Well, let's ask Craig. Is there a desert in Northern California?

• 45:19Speaker 03

I mean, probably, but not super close to San Francisco. I mean, you could be up, heading towards Napa, I suppose.

• 45:26Speaker 02

With like, those types of doom.

• 45:28Chris Ryan?

But if that's like, where, where's Lompoc or where's, like, some of the?

• 45:32Bill Simmons?

I don't know. It's, it's almost like a fever dream, that scene. That poor bartender.

• 45:37Speaker 02

Poor bartender gets killed, two cops, well, you're into the movie, five minutes, two cops, gone. Uh, old timer bartender, out of here.

• 45:46Bill Simmons?

Old timer bartender, probably bulletproof vest to work every day, I would say.

• 45:50Chris Ryan?

I bet he, you know, can he go two days without getting more than one customer sometimes? Like, that, that's a pretty far-flung bar.

• 45:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah, especially, I'm guessing it wasn't like, $15 for a Jack and Coke.

• 46:02Chris Ryan?

  No, it probably wasn't like.

• 46:03Bill Simmons?

Probably a couple bucks. Uh, Jack gets attacked by the bikers, and then Reggie's bus gets attacked simultaneously.

• 46:11Speaker 02

  That's a fantastic action scene.

• 46:13Bill Simmons?

It's really, this is 26 minutes in, this movie all of a sudden takes off. We get to hear Reggie sing James Brown. I wrote this down, this has happened a few times in movies, most famously in Fast 4, the end. Um, prison transport buses getting attacked?

• 46:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, yes.

• 46:31Bill Simmons?

It's a whole, I also like it when.

• 46:33Speaker 02

  Planes, con Air.

• 46:34Chris Ryan?

  Whenever anyone.

• 46:35Bill Simmons?

  Carrying prisoners under attack.

• 46:37Chris Ryan?

It's trying to communicate with the prison transport bus, like in Rebel Ridge.

• 46:41Bill Simmons?

Yeah, oh, Rebel Ridge, a good one.

• 46:43Speaker 02

He's hiding next to his cousin.

• 46:44Chris Ryan?

  He's like, stay, stay up.

• 46:45Bill Simmons?

I'm trying to think when that hasn't worked. And then if you're the prisoner and you're being transported in real life, deep down, you're probably hoping.

• 46:54Speaker 02

Wait, does this not happen in both US Marshals and The Fugitive as well? No, it's a plane crash.

• 46:59Bill Simmons?

  US Marshals plane crash.

• 47:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, The Fugitive.

• 47:02Bill Simmons?

Fugitive is the, is the, just a straight bus crash.

• 47:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, bus crash, yeah.

• 47:06Bill Simmons?

  Yes.

• 47:06Speaker 02

  It's not attacked.

• 47:07Bill Simmons?

Fast four is an intentional attack.

• 47:09Speaker 02

  Right.

• 47:09Bill Simmons?

  To free Vin Diesel.

• 47:10Speaker 02

I expand on this and say that anytime the prison transport mechanism is in peril, it's a good scene.

• 47:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 47:20Bill Simmons?

Also, the same guy is driving the bus in every scene, no matter what movie it is. It's like the little bit of a fat guy, looks like he's from Chicago and he's got a mustache.

• 47:29Chris Ryan?

It would have been cool if, if there was more of a budget, if Shotcaller had more of a budget.

• 47:34Bill Simmons?

  For a prison transport?

• 47:35Chris Ryan?

If we could have got a transport going, yeah.

• 47:39Bill Simmons?

  Shotcaller.

• 47:39Speaker 02

  Shotcaller.

• 47:42Speaker 02

So Shotcaller, I, I, I, so I, I had never seen Shotcaller, right?

• 47:47Chris Ryan?

  Until we did rewatchable?

• 47:48Speaker 02

  Well, I can't remember.

• 47:50Bill Simmons?

I badgered you to see it.

• 47:51Speaker 02

So like, I'm, I'm looking at that and I'm just not gonna watch Jamie Lannister as a hard ass. I'm just not looking at it. I'm not gonna watch it. I'm not looking at that. And then I watched Shotcaller and what the fuck, man? Shotcaller is way better than it had any business being.

• 48:07Bill Simmons?

It's kind of what I wanted from Rip.

• 48:10Chris Ryan?

  The Rip, yeah.

• 48:10Speaker 02

For it to be a little, well, Shotcaller is way smarter than The Rip is. The Rip is a fucking dumb movie. It's, it's good.

• 48:17Chris Ryan?

  All right.

• 48:18Speaker 02

  That's a stupid movie, bruh.

• 48:19Chris Ryan?

  Why?

• 48:20Speaker 02

It's just like, come on, bro. Like, even them, that's a, it's a five cent twist at the end of the movie. It's like, that, I enjoyed The Rip. I really did.

• 48:30Bill Simmons?

  I enjoyed The Rip.

• 48:31Speaker 02

But it's, I enjoyed The Rip. I did.

• 48:32Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 48:33Speaker 02

  It was worth the time.

• 48:34Bill Simmons?

My review to CR was that The Rip probably needed worse actors.

• 48:38Chris Ryan?

It probably should have, it, it probably should have had. The Den of Thieves level actor.

• 48:42Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 48:43Chris Ryan?

  In that movie.

• 48:44Speaker 02

Then you would have felt like, hey, I got more than I bargained for. But if you're looking at the two motherfuckers from Good Will Hunting, you're expecting slightly more.

• 48:53Bill Simmons?

I'm expecting Heat when I see those guys, and it was not Heat. Right. It was more in the really well-done Den of Thieves camp.

• 48:58Speaker 02

But Shotcaller, when I was watching it, that seemed like some made-for-cable type shit. Not a movie took itself very seriously. I didn't see what was coming at the end. It's like a legitimately good movie. I think he still is probably miscast. You probably could have got people to take that movie more seriously if you'd have cast somebody else in the lead, but.

• 49:15Bill Simmons?

  Disagree.

• 49:15Chris Ryan?

  Sick.

• 49:16Bill Simmons?

  I thought he was awesome.

• 49:17Speaker 02

  The movie's good.

• 49:18Bill Simmons?

I think you just took too much Jamie Lannister baggage into it.

• 49:21Speaker 02

I probably so. I didn't say it was a bad movie. What I'm saying is to get more people into that film, if it had been somebody different.

• 49:27Bill Simmons?

I just think they botched the release. I didn't even see it for three years. I didn't even know it was out.

• 49:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:33Bill Simmons?

Let's write a movie where a prison transport bus gets attacked. I don't know what happens the rest of the movie, but that's just how it starts.

• 49:39Speaker 02

Oh, I can tell you something. How about this? This will get made. So get made, Ringer Films.

• 49:45Bill Simmons?

  Ringer Films.

• 49:47Speaker 02

Prison transport bus gets attacked by fucking vampires, okay? This movie gets made. Vampires, they're fucking, they've woken up from their slumber, they're hungry.

• 50:01Chris Ryan?

  Dusk before transport.

• 50:03Speaker 02

Dusk before transport, there, these are hungry vamps. They're on the fucking.

• 50:06Bill Simmons?

  Craig's in on this.

• 50:07Speaker 02

Prison bus, they smell it. But they don't realize that they fucked with the wrong bus, baby. These guys can handle themselves, I'm telling you.

• 50:17Bill Simmons?

  Could we do, I wonder?

• 50:19Speaker 02

  He didn't greenlight my shit.

• 50:20Bill Simmons?

Well, I'm still thinking about it.

• 50:21Speaker 02

  I needed to greenlight.

• 50:22Bill Simmons?

Does that be a prison transporter, or could it be like any bus?

• 50:25Speaker 02

  No.

• 50:25Chris Ryan?

  Like a Greyhound?

• 50:27Bill Simmons?

No, like the Sixers are taking a bus from Philly to MSG. The bus is under attack. Tyrese Maxey has to save the day.

• 50:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 50:38Bill Simmons?

  Against vampires.

• 50:38Chris Ryan?

And B goes down at the first touch of a bus.

• 50:41Bill Simmons?

And B's ten minutes into the movie.

• 50:42Speaker 02

No, and B becomes a vampire to get to him.

• 50:45Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 50:45Speaker 02

And all of a sudden. And you know how we know that the vampires have gotten in B? Because all of a sudden.

• 50:50Bill Simmons?

  Because he's playing?

• 50:50Speaker 02

He's playing, he's not getting hurt.

• 50:52Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 50:52Speaker 02

  He's moving around, but there's.

• 50:54Chris Ryan?

He's just a vampire walking around in Skechers.

• 50:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:57Chris Ryan?

I noticed you haven't really commented on his revival.

• 51:00Bill Simmons?

  Is it a revival?

• 51:01Chris Ryan?

I think he's playing quite well.

• 51:02Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 51:03Speaker 02

He is. Once Bill gets a take, he doesn't ever go back on these days.

• 51:05Bill Simmons?

Oh, look, how long has he been playing well? Like, three weeks?

• 51:09Chris Ryan?

Yeah, about the time the Celtics have been good.

• 51:11Bill Simmons?

Great. Next scene, Reggie and Jack hit the hospital into Reggie's car blowing up, which includes Eddie just ripping off lines like, "Oh, great, I get to spend my first day out with Art the goddamn redneck." Fucking hilarious. "I'm broke, I'm a bitch, I was in a bus that flipped seventeen times."

• 51:29Speaker 02

That's the trailer. That was, that's the trailer.

• 51:32Bill Simmons?

  They blew up my car!

• 51:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:34Bill Simmons?

  They blew up my car!

• 51:35Speaker 02

  They blew up my car!

• 51:35Bill Simmons?

Is this where he goes, "That's it? I'm calling some of my fucking homies? I'm getting a loan? All of a sudden, this is the best movie you've ever seen." And then, uh, when he's calling the different people for the money, and they was like, "No, no, I was there when you beat the bitch up."

• 51:49Speaker 02

He's like, "Yeah." He's like, "You become a Christian." That was just funny. "I was there when you beat the bitch up." But all of this stuff, like, you talk about how bad the movie is, and maybe it's nostalgia, the bar, the bus, the, all of this stuff is moving real quick, and it's hard not to be entertained.

• 52:06Bill Simmons?

Yeah. He told me the cops ain't shit, and you were just pussies that I'm not. And he all said he's gonna park his car, and he don't care if it's a no parking zone. Reggie explains the Iceman to Jack. "The Iceman bought your house, which makes you probably the dumbest motherfucker in law enforcement." I also like the line, "He makes Gans look like Gandhi."

• 52:26Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 52:28Bill Simmons?

And then, he does the same, "Seven years in prison, you remember every story about pussy you ever heard." But they say, "We're cooking." It's starting to feel like Forty Eight Hours again. I also like Reggie spots a pickpocket. I love anytime somebody says, "She's dancing at a birdcage up in North Beach." I know I'm in the right movie.

• 52:49Bill Simmons?

That sounds great. I thought the band was just terrible. We get a bar fight, and we get him shooting somebody and asking if anyone else wants a limp. You like that scene?

• 52:57Speaker 02

Love it. I mean, all of this stuff is from the trailer, like that, you know?

• 53:00Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 53:01Speaker 02

Because the trailer itself, I remember, as a kid, it was everywhere. A lot of promotion for this movie. This was like a big one, right? Trailer goes through all this, it shows everything that's happened to him, and then it shows him shooting the gun like this, almost the same way he did in All Night.

• 53:15Bill Simmons?

  Right, yeah.

• 53:16Speaker 02

Yeah, like, shooting the gun like that, like, hilarious.

• 53:20Bill Simmons?

  Chinatown Hotel shootout.

• 53:22Speaker 02

  Hey.

• 53:23Chris Ryan?

  At the King Mai.

• 53:24Bill Simmons?

Some good, some good stunts in this.

• 53:26Speaker 02

Some great stunts in that? That is in, that's an intense desperate shootout. The hotel shootout is from a different movie. That's not normally the type of shit that you get.

• 53:37Chris Ryan?

It's the same, all the stuff with Cherry and Hickox is from.

• 53:41Bill Simmons?

  It's from the first one.

• 53:42Speaker 02

  It's from the.

• 53:43Bill Simmons?

It's a better, crazier version of the first.

• 53:45Speaker 02

Yeah, cuz he, think about him. I fucking killed you, P. That guy ain't trying to be funny. That's like a serious fucking, he's pissed the fuck off.

• 53:53Bill Simmons?

Have you ever wanted to jump into a garbage dumpster? Into the big garbage bags like they do in these movies? I feel like in real life you would do it and you'd just get stabbed by a broken wine bottle and die.

• 54:03Bill Simmons?

It's like, no way you survive it. They make it seem so easy. It's like this cushy fall.

• 54:07Speaker 02

But, but the thing that I never.

• 54:08Bill Simmons?

You're jumping into a Samsung TV.

• 54:11Speaker 02

I don't think about getting stabbed. I think about falling on somebody's old steak or some old gumbo they threw out or being in the middle of.

• 54:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 54:19Speaker 02

  Pampers.

• 54:19Bill Simmons?

So many bad things are in a garbage dumpster, never in a movie.

• 54:22Chris Ryan?

Hollywood's in crisis because you know there was like a day to a week of meetings about what should Cherry fall onto when we finally kill him? Or no, the, the, is it Cherry or is it the ice maid who falls into the water bottles?

• 54:35Bill Simmons?

  No, that's Cherry.

• 54:35Chris Ryan?

Cherry, and it's like, he's gonna go out the window, what should, what should hit him? What should he fall on? And they probably were like, what would look fucking amazing? That would have cost 10 million dollars now. To throw a guy out of a window? That's a real dude. He's like fully a stunt man.

• 54:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 54:51Speaker 02

This, this movie is crazy with the stunts. We didn't even talk about the guy that for a, a nothing scene. Like a nothing scene, this gets torched, set on fire.

• 55:00Chris Ryan?

  Oh, I'm getting to that.

• 55:01Speaker 02

Okay. A, a nothing scene, it's a whole thing. Set a human being off, set a torch, set on fire for no reason.

• 55:07Bill Simmons?

What about the stunt going through the movie screen and the motorcycle's landing perfectly?

• 55:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 55:13Bill Simmons?

  Right between the aisles.

• 55:15Speaker 02

  Right.

• 55:16Bill Simmons?

But that's not CGI. I don't know how they did that. Like if you're a tiny bit over to the left, it's, you're just hitting a chair.

• 55:23Speaker 02

Are you aware that in 1969, the United States was able to successfully put men on a spacecraft? And then get them to the moon?

• 55:31Bill Simmons?

  I don't like your sarcasm.

• 55:32Chris Ryan?

He also might be a little bit dubious about whether that happened. He might think that Stanley. Stanley Kubrick did that in the back lot of Paramount.

• 55:38Speaker 02

The point is that if they were able to do that.

• 55:39Bill Simmons?

  I stand with Danny Torrance.

• 55:42Bill Simmons?

  Spaceship sweatshirt.

• 55:45Bill Simmons?

The, uh, I really like Bernie Casey in this movie, but I like when they go to visit him and he goes, "You repay your debt to me!" And punches the glass.

• 55:54Speaker 02

When I was a kid, that used to scare me. He's terrifying.

• 55:59Bill Simmons?

  He's in a different movie.

• 56:00Speaker 02

You must repay my debt to me.

• 56:02Chris Ryan?

Bernie Casey is the stuff that got cut out, or just the explanation of that, yeah.

• 56:06Bill Simmons?

Is he the Judd Nelson, "You're in a different movie, but I'm, I'm really enjoying it."

• 56:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 56:10Bill Simmons?

He's in ba- Bernie Casey's in Shot Collar. He's not in Another Forty Days.

• 56:14Speaker 02

He's over here. He hates Reggie. Reggie's so scared of him. And then when he punches his hole through, punches a hole through the fucking glass, I, that scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.

• 56:24Bill Simmons?

By the way, Bernie Casey, like, pretty atypical role for him. Like, this was, he's running Lambda Lambda Lambda and Revenge of the Nerds and...

• 56:33Speaker 02

Well, in the seventies, he was a little bit more.

• 56:34Bill Simmons?

Stuff, he was usually the good guy. He wasn't like the, the bad guy.

• 56:37Speaker 02

Around this time, or a little bit after this, I'm gonna get you sucker comes out.

• 56:41Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 56:42Chris Ryan?

Did Bernie Casey ever play Felix Leiter in, in any Bond movies?

• 56:45Speaker 02

  I don't think he did.

• 56:46Bill Simmons?

I always thought Bernie Casey was really good.

• 56:48Speaker 02

  He's the man.

• 56:49Bill Simmons?

Anything he was in, but I really liked when this movie.

• 56:51Speaker 02

Always, like a plus performer, whatever he was in.

• 56:53Bill Simmons?

And then we had the Club North Beach final shootout, the last one. Ridiculous Iceman reveal. Um, we get to see a hostage taken in a stripper cage elevator.

• 57:01Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 57:01Bill Simmons?

Sign me up. Um, "You set me up, Ben." "You were getting too close, Jack." I like when people are trying to kill each other, but they're having like a conversation. "You set me up, CR."

• 57:12Chris Ryan?

  Iceman's got to-

• 57:13Bill Simmons?

"Sorry, man, you were losing control of the wringer." Just like hiding.

• 57:16Chris Ryan?

That's the Mr. and Mrs. Smith, where you're arguing while shooting each other.

• 57:19Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Um, Ganza's brother falls to his death on a water bottle truck, and then Jack, the, the twist, he shoots Reggie to get to Kiev.

• 57:28Chris Ryan?

So, he shoots Reggie with, with, I think, a forty-four Magnum?

• 57:33Speaker 02

Uh, Reggie's shit is fucked up, guys.

• 57:34Chris Ryan?

  And Reggie's-

• 57:35Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Reggie's not. He's losing his arm.

• 57:37Chris Ryan?

Losing a ton of blood instantaneously.

• 57:40Speaker 02

  Right.

• 57:40Chris Ryan?

  I don't know why they didn't-

• 57:41Bill Simmons?

  Right here.

• 57:41Chris Ryan?

I thought they were setting him up to have him in a vest. They, they mention it halfway through the movie.

• 57:46Speaker 03

Yeah, Jack has a vest at the diner.

• 57:47Chris Ryan?

He gets shot six times with a vest. I thought, oh, this was a plan they concocted where if he needs to be shot, he can be shot because he has a vest on, and he's not in one.

• 57:53Speaker 02

Yeah, I don't want to go all, like, you know, lioness ballistics. We can, we should just have a whole pod called Ballistics, where we talk about the guns in these, in these fucking movies. You get shot from that range with that gun, your shit is fucked up.

• 58:05Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 58:06Speaker 02

  Like that's.

• 58:06Bill Simmons?

You need to be in the hospital table in an hour.

• 58:08Speaker 02

Yeah, the eighties were a big gun fuck. I mean, the Gans is carrying a Desert Eagle in this, right?

• 58:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 58:14Speaker 02

So they they were a big caliber gun decade before.

• 58:17Bill Simmons?

Jesus, I didn't realize American Sniper was here.

• 58:19Chris Ryan?

  I know, seriously.

• 58:21Speaker 02

  What?

• 58:22Chris Ryan?

It would have been funny, though, if he'd shot him, where he shot him, and he goes, there goes college softball.

• 58:34Bill Simmons?

Oh, man. What do you got for most rewatchable, CR?

• 58:36Chris Ryan?

Well, I'll just do a shout out to the motocross scene because it is such.

• 58:39Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, that is crazy.

• 58:40Chris Ryan?

Unnecessary use of burning a stuntman nearly to death. And I also love Brent Jennings in this movie as as bros. But it really, there's no real reason to have that scene in the movie, but it is awesome that they're just like, what I need is a motocross track, 25 experienced motocross bike riders. Then we're gonna have a stuntman get lit on fire with a shootout and all the motorcycles need to miss Nick Nolte by an inch.

• 59:06Speaker 02

  A little bit.

• 59:07Chris Ryan?

Yeah. But I my favorite scene is probably the that let Eddie Murphy cook.

• 59:13Bill Simmons?

The eight minutes of Eddie Murphy just cooking. I agree.

• 59:16Speaker 02

The payphone scene is my favorite scene, like, it's the one that I most get excited to watch. I will say to your point about Brent Jennings in this, an underrated scene is when the two guys confront him in the room and they shoot his ear. Like.

• 59:33Bill Simmons?

Oh, Malcolm. Oh, not Malcolm, no.

• 59:35Chris Ryan?

  Tyrone.

• 59:35Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 59:36Speaker 02

Brent Jennings in the movie, right?

• 59:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 59:37Speaker 02

Yeah, when when they shoot his ear, like that scene, once again.

• 59:40Bill Simmons?

And he starts laughing. I think people get shot and laugh.

• 59:43Speaker 02

  It's a it's like from a horror movie.

• 59:44Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 59:45Speaker 02

  It's it's.

• 59:46Chris Ryan?

It's also the way it's shot is really.

• 59:48Bill Simmons?

Yeah, they do some weird, like, looking up. Camera stuff.

• 59:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:51Speaker 02

It's you start to see like how insane he really is because he gets shot in the ear, then still delivers to them the message that he needs to so they can finish their job, then they finish them.

• 1:00:03Bill Simmons?

It's like when Trump got shot in the ear.

• 1:00:05Speaker 02

Okay, now, I know you're on Netflix now, but yeah.

• 1:00:10Speaker 02

  That didn't make sense.

• 1:00:14Speaker 02

I don't know what the correlation is. If it'll be paramount, maybe, but.

• 1:00:18Bill Simmons?

What's the most 1990 thing about this movie, CR?

• 1:00:21Chris Ryan?

I think unironically ordering brewskis and then having those beers be Miller Genuine Draft bottles.

• 1:00:28Chris Ryan?

You know, I recently tried Miller Genuine Draft for the first time. That's not a great beer. Eh, yeah, and then also just the Iceman using an Uzi.

• 1:00:35Speaker 02

What do you drink? What kind of beer do you drink?

• 1:00:36Chris Ryan?

  Uh.

• 1:00:37Bill Simmons?

  Oh, he drinks Michelob Ultra.

• 1:00:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:39Chris Ryan?

Sure. Light beer, I love Miller Lite, Coors Lite.

• 1:00:42Speaker 02

  Okay. Oh, a real American.

• 1:00:44Chris Ryan?

  Sure.

• 1:00:44Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 1:00:46Chris Ryan?

You guys, MGD's not really around anymore. It's, it's just not, it's certainly not around in LA. I do not see MGD in LA. Tastes more like malt liquor.

• 1:00:54Speaker 02

You know, these are the beers of my home. When I came out here, all the whites I knew, they, it was Pabst Blue Ribbon. It was like, give me a Modelo, give me a.

• 1:01:03Chris Ryan?

  I like Modelo.

• 1:01:03Speaker 02

San Luis Angeles IPA or whatever, like, I, I, where I'm from, the, the ones that I grew up with, give me a Miller Lite, give me a Coors. These are the Americans I knew. I hear things change. I don't even know, who are the Miller Lite people at The Ringer? Who are they?

• 1:01:17Chris Ryan?

Chang. Chang loves a Miller Lite.

• 1:01:19Speaker 02

Oh, that makes sense. That tracks.

• 1:01:21Bill Simmons?

  I drink Michelob Ultra.

• 1:01:23Chris Ryan?

I got it. We got it. Yeah.

• 1:01:26Bill Simmons?

  It's refreshing, it's only 90 calories.

• 1:01:30Bill Simmons?

My most thanked to anything about this movie is just this stage of Eddie's career. He's kind of fat in this movie, for him.

• 1:01:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, a little bit.

• 1:01:38Bill Simmons?

He talks about like, he won't, he hates watching this movie because he thinks he's fat in it.

• 1:01:42Chris Ryan?

  He's not though.

• 1:01:42Bill Simmons?

His hair's starting to go a little bit. He just looks older and like.

• 1:01:45Chris Ryan?

He looks pretty good though, like outside of the.

• 1:01:47Bill Simmons?

  He's wearing that big suit.

• 1:01:48Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:49Bill Simmons?

  Where it's like.

• 1:01:50Chris Ryan?

Man, I feel like he looks handsome and in shape. Yes.

• 1:01:53Bill Simmons?

You know, no, but if you watch the first movie, that suit is like tight on him.

• 1:01:56Speaker 02

Man, my mama, when we watched this movie.

• 1:02:01Bill Simmons?

  She loved him?

• 1:02:02Speaker 02

She would not stop talking about how much weight Eddie Murphy had gained. That's one of the things I remember.

• 1:02:08Bill Simmons?

You really feel it in the suit. It's almost like a David Byrne suit on him compared to the first movie.

• 1:02:13Speaker 02

Again, though, like, the suit is big. The suit is big. Yeah.

• 1:02:19Bill Simmons?

  Would say it's the best.

• 1:02:20Speaker 02

Oh, hold on, I gotta do my most 90s.

• 1:02:22Bill Simmons?

  But what is it?

• 1:02:23Speaker 02

What was it? Convertibles in movies. I can think of so many movies where people driving around in convertibles. Twins, K-9, people driving around in convertibles, having conversations in the open air in movies. I looked it up. Less convertibles in movies because less convertibles, period.

• 1:02:40Chris Ryan?

  I know.

• 1:02:41Speaker 02

The convertible was phased out in the 90s.

• 1:02:43Chris Ryan?

I also wonder whether or not convertible's a better shot, you know, like you, you get like more of whatever, even if it's a, if it's a screen background.

• 1:02:50Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:02:50Chris Ryan?

Cinematically, it's a little bit better.

• 1:02:52Bill Simmons?

You know what the problem is? Fucking skin cancer.

• 1:02:56Bill Simmons?

  That's killed convertibles.

• 1:02:57Chris Ryan?

Did you, didn't you have a convertible?

• 1:03:00Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I had one for 25 years. I always had a convertible.

• 1:03:02Speaker 02

  Had to give it up.

• 1:03:03Bill Simmons?

Guess what? I got a big melanoma on my forehead. And that was it. I never had a convertible again after that. No, I think, I think people just would bake in the sun in a convertible and not think twice about it. And now I think people are a little more sun careful.

• 1:03:16Speaker 02

  You don't really see it.

• 1:03:17Bill Simmons?

  Craig's generation.

• 1:03:19Chris Ryan?

  Too careful about the sun.

• 1:03:20Bill Simmons?

Just more careful about the sun.

• 1:03:21Chris Ryan?

It is a thing, you know, people put on sunscreen every morning. I don't do that, but people, that's the thing. You're, it's recommended for out here.

• 1:03:27Speaker 03

Yes, like a part of your daily morning routine is you apply sunscreen.

• 1:03:30Bill Simmons?

Back in the 90s, just put that top down, fucking bake in the sun.

• 1:03:33Chris Ryan?

  Have an MGD.

• 1:03:34Bill Simmons?

  Bright red.

• 1:03:34Speaker 02

Have an MGD later, fucking rip.

• 1:03:36Bill Simmons?

Better times. Go to a strip joint with a stripper cage.

• 1:03:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:40Bill Simmons?

Watch the stripper cage elevator going up and down. Those were the days.

• 1:03:44Chris Ryan?

  That's what they were watching.

• 1:03:46Bill Simmons?

What stage the best? What do you got, CR?

• 1:03:48Chris Ryan?

  Uh, ball busting cop talk.

• 1:03:50Bill Simmons?

  Hmm.

• 1:03:51Chris Ryan?

Now, Jack, a cop is a guy and sometimes a guy steps on his dick.

• 1:03:57Speaker 02

That, bruh, this guy was obsessed with stepping on dick.

• 1:04:01Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:02Speaker 02

He told you, like, you stepped on your dick. He said it three times in one sentence.

• 1:04:05Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I just love all the, all the ball, ball busting that happens in the precinct, uh, and...

• 1:04:09Bill Simmons?

We don't do it the same way anymore with precincts. We just lost the narrative.

• 1:04:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:14Bill Simmons?

These chaotic precincts with a lot of sarcasm and a lot of insulting. Like, it doesn't exist anymore.

• 1:04:19Speaker 02

  Busting each other's balls.

• 1:04:21Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we don't have ball busting.

• 1:04:22Chris Ryan?

You think work from home killed precincts?

• 1:04:24Bill Simmons?

  I do. I do. I think COVID.

• 1:04:26Speaker 02

We know what we needed, the ringer.

• 1:04:27Bill Simmons?

  I think Karen Bass.

• 1:04:27Chris Ryan?

  Cops on Zoom calls.

• 1:04:28Bill Simmons?

  Karen Bass COVID.

• 1:04:29Speaker 02

You know what we needed, the ringer? We need a police captain at the ringer.

• 1:04:34Bill Simmons?

  Just somebody who...

• 1:04:34Speaker 02

Somebody walks in here, "Lathan, get your motherfucking ass in my office."

• 1:04:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:38Speaker 02

  We, we need to like...

• 1:04:39Bill Simmons?

Well, our guy got cut out of this movie, Frank McCreary.

• 1:04:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:43Bill Simmons?

The, who was the, yelled, the sergeant yelling at them in the first movie. Just out.

• 1:04:48Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:04:49Bill Simmons?

I always need that guy in a, if I'm gonna be in a cop in a precinct.

• 1:04:52Chris Ryan?

With you, cause he's just Inspector Todd, but in, just go.

• 1:04:57Bill Simmons?

What do you have for what stage the best?

• 1:04:58Speaker 02

The animus between rural and metropolitan Americans. I hear a lot of talk in this, hillbillies, rednecks, all this stuff.

• 1:05:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:07Speaker 02

We had it then and we have it now. We can't get on the same page. It's tough.

• 1:05:12Bill Simmons?

  I have a.

• 1:05:14Speaker 02

Oh, also in Internal Affairs. Internal Affairs in the eighties, scumbags.

• 1:05:19Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:19Speaker 02

  Hated them.

• 1:05:19Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, they fucking hated IA.

• 1:05:21Speaker 02

Hated IA. Every single movie, IA scumbags.

• 1:05:26Bill Simmons?

I had two I loves. I love evil Internal Affairs guys, or seemingly evil, but they're really doing their job. And honestly, like villainous biker gangs, tell me when that doesn't work in a movie.

• 1:05:37Speaker 02

  Hmm, that's good.

• 1:05:37Bill Simmons?

These guys are just bad guys, they got bikes.

• 1:05:40Speaker 02

They, you know what? They, villainous, bad biker gangs, kind of culturally expired, but then, I feel like Sons of Anarchy.

• 1:05:47Bill Simmons?

  And Task.

• 1:05:48Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but in a very different way, though.

• 1:05:50Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:05:51Bill Simmons?

I also had a fun action movie sequel gimmick, is the dead guy's brother coming to exact revenge?

• 1:05:57Chris Ryan?

  It's fine by me.

• 1:05:58Bill Simmons?

  Sign me up.

• 1:05:58Chris Ryan?

  Fine by me.

• 1:05:59Bill Simmons?

If a bus can flip with prisoners, even better. And then, any movie that has an exchange like this. We're looking for a whore that works here. Angel don't work here anymore, she's dancing up in North Beach. I'm probably in the right theater.

• 1:06:18Chris Ryan?

I meant to come see the new Colleen Hoover, but it turns out I'm right where I need to be.

• 1:06:23Bill Simmons?

  You guys understand me?

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

This isn't Hamlet? I thought I was Chloe Zhao.

• 1:06:28Bill Simmons?

Uh, Deneth's Benihana Award for Scene Stealing Location and the Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happiness Award for Best Needle Drop. I'm giving to the Birdcage, which was that strip club at the end, which I thought was a really good bar scene. You could also talk me into the first.

• 1:06:42Speaker 02

  The Sandunes.

• 1:06:43Bill Simmons?

I got, uh, Sandunes Bar, whatever that was called.

• 1:06:45Chris Ryan?

Sneaky candidate here is the King My Hotel for me.

• 1:06:48Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:06:49Chris Ryan?

Oh. Single room occupancy, you know, single resident occupancy.

• 1:06:51Bill Simmons?

  Hour, hour per rental.

• 1:06:56Bill Simmons?

Great Shot Order Award, most cinematic shot, what do you got here?

• 1:06:59Chris Ryan?

There's a bunch, Walter Hills is a G. I had, there's a great shot of them coming up the hill in Jack's caddy, when they're pulling up to Reggie's car for the first time, before it explodes.

• 1:07:11Bill Simmons?

  Nice wide shot.

• 1:07:12Chris Ryan?

And there's like, for some reason, there's like spotlights going at the bottom of the hill in San Francisco. San Francisco is just such a beautiful cinematic city, anyway.

• 1:07:20Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:20Chris Ryan?

Um, as we will discuss in Zodiac, but that was just a great shot.

• 1:07:23Speaker 02

There's a neat little shot when, I think it's Reggie's getting out of jail. To where they stop to talk and he shoots it from like

• 1:07:31Chris Ryan?

  Between the bars.

• 1:07:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, low.

• 1:07:33Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, you're right.

• 1:07:34Speaker 02

Low angle where it makes them look like they're having a conversation in prisons. Good shot.

• 1:07:38Bill Simmons?

I had that one. I also really liked the slow mo Reggie getting shot. And Kio kind of realizing what's happening in slow motion as he sees Reggie sinking down and then turning back to Jack. It's just like good slow mo.

• 1:07:49Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:50Bill Simmons?

Very rarely do we have good slow mo. Here's a new award. The Dorfler's Door Award for how much did that hurt? Named after Marvin Dorfler in Midnight Run and they slammed the door.

• 1:08:03Bill Simmons?

Getting a basketball whipped in your face like that from close range, which

• 1:08:07Chris Ryan?

  Hurts.

• 1:08:07Bill Simmons?

  He does them.

• 1:08:09Speaker 02

Broken in the nose? Yeah, you're fucked.

• 1:08:11Bill Simmons?

So it might have hit him in the chin? I just felt like there's blood.

• 1:08:15Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:08:16Bill Simmons?

I think that would really hurt.

• 1:08:18Chris Ryan?

Nolte gets off pretty easy in this movie compared to what happened in the first one.

• 1:08:22Speaker 02

Oh, like when they were scrambling and shit?

• 1:08:24Chris Ryan?

Bleeding out of every orifice like by the end of that movie. In this one, he's just kind of like, ah.

• 1:08:28Bill Simmons?

Yeah. We'll take a break and then Ciara's got to flex. This episode is brought to you by Quince. Finding a decent piece of clothing can be a lot harder than finding a decent movie, but that was before Quince. Quince has staple pieces made from premium materials like 100% Mongolian cashmere. And everything is priced 50 to 80% less than similar brands. It's the perfect place to start building a cozy fall outfit without any absurd markups. For instance, I love a good vest. They have a lightweight down packable puffer vest, which is an easy fall layer, although nobody loves layers more than Chris Ryan. You can throw it over a sweater, long sleeve, whenever you want to make an outfit feel a little more seasonal, simple, classic.

• 1:10:19Chris Ryan?

All right, CR, flex category, what do you got? I'm gonna do a double here, but it's the same scene. It's the same, so I hope it's okay with you. The Sean Fantasy Award for stealth homage that gives every movie nerd a criteria orgasm for essentially redoing the opening of Once Upon a Time in the West with the bikers arriving at the bar in the beginning. So spaghetti western opening. And then the Rich Rick Caketti Award, uh, meat award. Read the whole thing, please. The Rick Caketti Guard Meat Award for most memorable death by a security guard or other bystander whom the movie treats as inconsequential, but who probably had a spouse and kids who love him. Or her for the female cop that gets desert eagled in the bar. Oh, yeah.

• 1:11:03Chris Ryan?

And gets blown through a window. And it's just like, all right, that's the first scene of this movie. That's a great new word. I love that word.

• 1:11:10Speaker 02

Two cops down, what about the poor bastard who is just coming out of his hotel room?

• 1:11:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:15Speaker 02

And takes four to the chest. He's just like.

• 1:11:19Chris Ryan?

He was just getting a haircut.

• 1:11:20Speaker 02

Yeah, what kind of, yeah, he's in there with a lady. What kind of racket's going on out here? And then boom, boom, boom, boom, he's dead.

• 1:11:26Chris Ryan?

Those are great ones. That was a mouthful. Sorry about that. Yeah. Is it Caketti or Caketti? Okay, Rick, let us know.

• 1:11:35Bill Simmons?

I'm gonna add here the Hans Gruber scale villain ranking. Cherry Gans, what do you think? Five and a half? Yeah, he's up there.

• 1:11:42Speaker 02

  I like him.

• 1:11:43Bill Simmons?

Do we need more comedy from him? What was he missing?

• 1:11:45Chris Ryan?

  I-

• 1:11:45Bill Simmons?

  It's a little one note.

• 1:11:46Chris Ryan?

I don't mean to dominate the floor here, but this is my hottest take.

• 1:11:51Bill Simmons?

  Oh, do it now.

• 1:11:51Chris Ryan?

We gotta get back to guys like Cherry Gans. It was a deeply satisfying experience to watch. Just a truly psychopathic bad guy. Now I don't have to worry about his childhood, or what he really wants in life, or who hurt him. He's like, "You killed my brother. I'm killing mad cops until I get to you." That was an awesome bad guy.

• 1:12:11Bill Simmons?

So you go higher? It sounds like you go like eight?

• 1:12:13Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, I love Cherry.

• 1:12:15Speaker 02

So angry. I thought I killed you. Like, so angry. He wanted him fucking dead.

• 1:12:20Bill Simmons?

  Fucking dead!

• 1:12:21Speaker 02

Fucking dead! I thought I killed your dad! I killed your bitch! I'm like, "God, damn," it was like an opera.

• 1:12:27Bill Simmons?

We're really talking ourselves into this movie.

• 1:12:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:30Bill Simmons?

Was there a better title for this movie? Do we like "Another Forty-Eight Hours" as a title?

• 1:12:34Chris Ryan?

Uh, "Another Forty-Eight Hours: Cherry's Revenge."

• 1:12:38Speaker 02

  Ah, I love a colon.

• 1:12:40Bill Simmons?

  How about "Forty-Eight Hours Two"?

• 1:12:43Speaker 02

Well, I mean, "Another" makes more sense than that.

• 1:12:45Bill Simmons?

  How about "Forty-Eight More Hours"?

• 1:12:47Chris Ryan?

Well, if they knew that they were gonna take the Forty-Eight Hours part out of the movie, I would've just called it, you know, "Jack and Reggie Reminded."

• 1:12:54Bill Simmons?

Forty-Eight Hours Two: Reggie Gets Out?

• 1:12:56Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:57Speaker 02

  That works.

• 1:12:58Bill Simmons?

Butch's Girlfriend Award weak link of the film.

• 1:13:02Bill Simmons?

The plot's incoherent, and we covered all the reasons why.

• 1:13:05Speaker 02

  Story.

• 1:13:05Bill Simmons?

Jack can't find the Iceman for years, but never suspects other cops.

• 1:13:09Speaker 02

Jack is such a fucking idiot, guys.

• 1:13:10Bill Simmons?

Reggie's buddy in jail knows the entire time, nobody asks him.

• 1:13:14Speaker 02

  Jack is dumb.

• 1:13:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:16Speaker 02

  Okay, Jack is dumb.

• 1:13:17Bill Simmons?

"Every time I get close, the Iceman, uh..."

• 1:13:20Speaker 02

And Reggie realizes it's two. Reggie's like, "Hey, Jack, the Iceman is a cop." "Ah, I couldn't be a cop." Reggie's like, "Idiot, are you deadass? Like, it's definitely a cop. You're stupid as fuck."

• 1:13:31Bill Simmons?

Reggie's like 29 and he's been in jail for 10 years, and he figures it out in five minutes.

• 1:13:35Speaker 02

It takes him a day to figure it out.

• 1:13:38Bill Simmons?

Also, why wouldn't they just kill Jack? It's like, "Jack's getting close. Hey, how about this? Let's just shoot him in the head tomorrow. Cool."

• 1:13:45Speaker 02

  Then kill everybody else.

• 1:13:46Bill Simmons?

Kill him. What do you have for weak link?

• 1:13:49Chris Ryan?

I had the Bernie Casey, Tisha Campbell part. Just felt like it was stapled on at the end. What about her?

• 1:13:56Speaker 02

Tisha Campbell is one of, I, I, I have this argument about Tisha Campbell.

• 1:14:01Bill Simmons?

  Oh, boy.

• 1:14:02Speaker 02

I, I think Tisha Campbell is one of the most important performers in black cultural history.

• 1:14:08Chris Ryan?

Yeah, she, she, she had a lovely, lovely episode of The Lowdown recently.

• 1:14:12Speaker 02

See, Tisha Campbell has been so consistent over the decades, okay? You can pop on Little Shop of Horrors, oh, look at that, Tisha Campbell. Martin throughout the nineties.

• 1:14:23Bill Simmons?

  Boomerang next door neighbor.

• 1:14:25Speaker 02

Boomerang. You think about these fundamental parts of black cultural film stuff. She's there, pops up again, My Wife and Kids, The Lowdown, like, Tisha Campbell has had a fantastic, amazing career. We don't appreciate her enough.

• 1:14:40Chris Ryan?

I just meant randomly endangering this woman at the end of it.

• 1:14:43Speaker 02

For no reason, she was taken hostage, yeah, I get that.

• 1:14:47Chris Ryan?

And also, like, doesn't Cherry kind of puts that one together pretty fast? Did you have a weak link or no?

• 1:14:53Speaker 02

Uh, the story's a weak link. Um, you know what I hate, though? I, there's one thing that hates, that I hate in the movie. So, cause I know people, and I know people that work at places.

• 1:15:03Bill Simmons?

  Like Angel?

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

Yeah, like, I work, I know people that work at places.

• 1:15:06Bill Simmons?

  You've done Angel, North Beach?

• 1:15:08Speaker 02

I've known a lot of Angels, a lot of different North Beaches.

• 1:15:11Bill Simmons?

Except there in North Beach, dancing.

• 1:15:12Speaker 02

He comes up to her, he goes, here's seventy-five thousand dollars. She goes, if it comes from him, it's probably got blood on it, I don't want it. That's not happening.

• 1:15:21Bill Simmons?

  Taking it?

• 1:15:22Speaker 02

  That's not happening, man.

• 1:15:23Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:15:24Speaker 02

Seventy-five thousand dollars, hey, man, how's my dad doing? I appreciate it, give me the motherfucking money, get out the goddamn store. Like, every time I see something like that, that's not, I know the grandmamas, the aunties, the baby mamas, all of that. The seventy-five thousand is being taken.

• 1:15:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:39Bill Simmons?

  What's aged the worst?

• 1:15:44Bill Simmons?

I have a special What the Hell Were They Thinking? piece for this, where, um, Jack goes to see Reggie in jail, who's playing basketball, and the scene's not good. How is that not a great scene? That should have been the best scene in the movie. They haven't seen each other in five years.

• 1:15:57Chris Ryan?

What's aged the worst is the gap between the two movies. This, this movie needed to come out in eighty-seven, or eight, or something, or eighty-five.

• 1:16:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I think that's fair. Um, why have them sing Roxanne again? They just do, there's a couple of things they do in this movie, it's like, dude.

• 1:16:11Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:11Bill Simmons?

It's almost a, why didn't somebody on the set stop this award?

• 1:16:14Chris Ryan?

Yeah, why isn't he singing When Doves Cry or something?

• 1:16:16Bill Simmons?

  He already did that.

• 1:16:17Speaker 02

Do you think this is a movie that they made? And they were trying to make a movie where you didn't have to see the first one. Eddie's such a big star now that he's got like such an expanding.

• 1:16:28Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but it wasn't like it was like.

• 1:16:29Speaker 02

  I'm asking like.

• 1:16:30Bill Simmons?

I think Forty Eight Hours, everyone.

• 1:16:32Chris Ryan?

It's not like Forty Eight Hours was Rushmore.

• 1:16:33Speaker 02

I know, but you see this movie at this particular time.

• 1:16:37Bill Simmons?

I just think it was lazy. I just think they're being lazy. The rough of Hannah Rubenek Partridge overacting where it clearly goes to the hotel clerk in the Chinatown Hotel. She dials it up for two minutes.

• 1:16:49Chris Ryan?

She's screaming. I would also go for Cherry when he sees that Jack isn't dead.

• 1:16:54Speaker 02

Ah, he's going. Fuck it, bitch.

• 1:16:57Bill Simmons?

  Ben, you have a flex.

• 1:16:59Speaker 02

All right, another list. The, uh, another Forty Eight Hours award for best black guy, white guy, action comedy duo.

• 1:17:07Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:17:08Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:17:09Speaker 02

Um, so we're starting at number five, Running Scared. That's a guy put in there. I think this movie is criminally underrated. People don't talk.

• 1:17:16Bill Simmons?

We didn't have no rewatch was.

• 1:17:18Speaker 02

Uh, number four, Forty Eight Hours, Reggie and Jack. These are just duos.

• 1:17:23Bill Simmons?

I would have that one, but go.

• 1:17:25Speaker 02

  You'd have that one.

• 1:17:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:26Speaker 02

  There's only one one.

• 1:17:27Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:17:28Speaker 02

There's only, there's a clear one. Number three, I slid this one in here. I don't know if I can actually use it. I'm going Vincent Jules from Pulp Fiction.

• 1:17:37Bill Simmons?

  You can use it.

• 1:17:38Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:17:38Bill Simmons?

  Counting it.

• 1:17:39Speaker 02

  Vincent Jules, Pulp Fiction.

• 1:17:40Bill Simmons?

  Great one.

• 1:17:40Speaker 02

A little bit of a stretch.

• 1:17:41Bill Simmons?

No, not a stretch for me.

• 1:17:43Speaker 02

Okay. Number two, this is not an action, but this is a comedy. And this is one of the top white guy, black guy duos in a comedy movie ever. And this is Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson.

• 1:17:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:57Speaker 02

Sidney Dean and Billy and White Man Can't Jump.

• 1:18:00Bill Simmons?

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:18:00Speaker 02

This is number two. Number one is so fucking easy.

• 1:18:03Bill Simmons?

  Forty Eight Hours?

• 1:18:04Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:18:05Bill Simmons?

  It's Murtaugh and Riggs, man.

• 1:18:06Speaker 02

It's Murtaugh and Riggs. It's fucking over Forty Eight Hours. Why fucking male did you do it? It's like, it, it's, it's, I can't believe that he did it. A whole childhood with Mel and Mel threw it away. Lethal Weapon, Riggs and Murtaugh, by far, maybe the best black guy, white guy duo ever in anything.

• 1:18:24Bill Simmons?

But the movie gets made because of Forty Eight Hours.

• 1:18:26Speaker 02

  What difference does it make?

• 1:18:27Bill Simmons?

  The prototype.

• 1:18:27Speaker 02

  Did you think about?

• 1:18:29Bill Simmons?

  Kobe's better than MJ.

• 1:18:30Speaker 02

That's not, I never said that.

• 1:18:31Bill Simmons?

  That's why you're Kobe guy.

• 1:18:32Speaker 02

I do think MJ's better than Dr. J.

• 1:18:34Bill Simmons?

  Kobe's doing an MJ impersonation.

• 1:18:35Speaker 02

I do think MJ is better than Dr. J. Well, you think Kobe's better than MJ? Is that something you've ever said?

• 1:18:39Bill Simmons?

If you put like three, three paps, blue ribbons in it.

• 1:18:43Speaker 02

  I've never said that.

• 1:18:44Bill Simmons?

  North Beach.

• 1:18:44Speaker 02

I do think MJ is better than Dr. J, though. I think Forty Eight Hours is Dr. J and Lethal Weapon is Michael Jordan.

• 1:18:51Bill Simmons?

I'll accept the argument. I disagree, but it's fair.

• 1:18:54Speaker 02

So you, you really don't think that Riggs and Murtaugh are number one?

• 1:18:58Bill Simmons?

If you're gonna put it like that, I see it. If you're gonna make the Forty Eight Hours is Dr. J.

• 1:19:02Speaker 02

Did we do Lethal Weapon Two yet for rewatchables?

• 1:19:04Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:19:05Bill Simmons?

We did a long time ago. We haven't done Three.

• 1:19:07Speaker 02

Um, there are a couple of honorable mentions. Django, uh, Men in Black, a personal one for me that nobody cares about, The Last Boy Scout. And then.

• 1:19:16Bill Simmons?

We've done The Last Boy Scout.

• 1:19:18Speaker 02

We care about Last Boy Scout.

• 1:19:18Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we totally care about that.

• 1:19:19Speaker 02

I love The Last Boy Scout. And then one that no one ever brings up is Money Talks. I really feel like in Money Talks, Chris Tucker and Charlie Sheen have fantastic chemistry. It was a really good movie to me. I liked it.

• 1:19:31Bill Simmons?

It's a good list. So you wouldn't put Men in Black in there?

• 1:19:34Speaker 02

Men in Black didn't make out. I'm trying to think of what to take out for Men in Black.

• 1:19:39Bill Simmons?

I wouldn't put Men in Black in there either.

• 1:19:41Speaker 02

Men in Black could maybe bump out Running Scared, but I just think Running Scared is like a. Were you a Richard Pryor, Gene, Gene Wilder guy?

• 1:19:47Bill Simmons?

I was as a kid, but I don't think those movies have held up great.

• 1:19:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:19:50Bill Simmons?

Silver Street's okay. I would have added Crockett and Tubs to that. And then I would have been able to move into Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, which arguably could have been number two.

• 1:20:00Speaker 02

If you're talking about overall duos, Crockett and Tubs is way up there. This was a movie thing. But if you're talking about overall duos, Crockett and Tubs, it's certainly the best on TV.

• 1:20:07Bill Simmons?

  I'm a fiend for mojitos.

• 1:20:11Speaker 02

  It's a good list.

• 1:20:12Bill Simmons?

  Good list.

• 1:20:13Speaker 02

  Appreciate you guys.

• 1:20:14Bill Simmons?

The C R thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford hottest take award. Uh, he already did his. What do you got, Van?

• 1:20:19Speaker 02

  No hot takes.

• 1:20:20Bill Simmons?

  I have one.

• 1:20:21Speaker 02

  What's it?

• 1:20:22Bill Simmons?

This is my number one, release the cut movie.

• 1:20:24Speaker 02

Yeah. Ah, I see. Release the Walter Cut.

• 1:20:27Bill Simmons?

This is it. What's your number one?

• 1:20:30Speaker 02

Uh, release the cut, movie to cut that we've never seen. Well, it got released.

• 1:20:35Chris Ryan?

  The Snyder Cut?

• 1:20:36Speaker 02

Snyder Cut was my number one.

• 1:20:37Bill Simmons?

So you don't have a number one now?

• 1:20:38Speaker 02

Nah, now I have a number one. I think, I think of all of them, I've kind of seen them like, but the number one was I wanted to see what Zach would have done.

• 1:20:44Chris Ryan?

Make us a promise right now. When you know where the finish line is for you, and you're like, I think it's gonna, I think I got a couple more years left. About eighteen months out of my time. I'm just, just, do, make me a promise.

• 1:20:56Speaker 02

  You, you, you'll understand.

• 1:20:56Chris Ryan?

You use the platform you have to get the another forty-eight hours.

• 1:21:00Bill Simmons?

Why can't I do it now?

• 1:21:01Chris Ryan?

  Well, I don't know. I don't know if you've got the juice.

• 1:21:03Speaker 02

Oh, hold on, hold on, wait a second.

• 1:21:07Speaker 02

Chris, what the fuck are we doing here?

• 1:21:09Bill Simmons?

No, I see what he's doing. He's known me a long time.

• 1:21:12Speaker 02

I tell you, I tell you something though. You're, I know, I know you've heard about this. We're in the midst of the re-Apecs.

• 1:21:17Chris Ryan?

  Of Bill?

• 1:21:17Speaker 02

Yeah. You ever heard about this?

• 1:21:18Chris Ryan?

  Prove it then.

• 1:21:19Speaker 02

  Re-Apec, okay.

• 1:21:20Chris Ryan?

All I know is that Apex out, Till Simmons should be able to get the Walter Hill cut of another forty-eight hours.

• 1:21:24Bill Simmons?

  Re-Apecs.

• 1:21:25Speaker 02

Re-Apecs Bill can get this released.

• 1:21:28Bill Simmons?

Craig just told me about this.

• 1:21:29Speaker 02

Craig, Craig, you heard about the re-Apecs?

• 1:21:30Chris Ryan?

Absolutely. Have Sarandos call Walter Hill and be like, name your price. This is Brady in his late thirties. That's what you're on right now.

• 1:21:36Bill Simmons?

This is it. The last three circles.

• 1:21:38Speaker 02

Which Brady? Like the twenty-eight-three Brady?

• 1:21:39Bill Simmons?

The Malcolm Butler game through the Falcons.

• 1:21:42Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah. Re-Apecs.

• 1:21:43Bill Simmons?

So the re-Apecs would have to include a release to cut.

• 1:21:48Speaker 02

  You can get it done.

• 1:21:51Bill Simmons?

My number two would be Eyes Wide Shut.

• 1:21:53Speaker 02

  Aw, shit.

• 1:21:54Bill Simmons?

Because I think that we have a lot of evidence that there might have been a different version of that movie before Kubrick died, and then God only knows what we ended up with. But I think that would be number two for me. What about, anything else for you?

• 1:22:07Chris Ryan?

As far as director's cuts, I, I feel like more often than not now, we get the cuts that we deserve.

• 1:22:12Bill Simmons?

It's funny. One of the ones I always wanted was Fifty-four. Cause I kind of liked that movie, but that, and it was supposedly like chopped to death, like this movie.

• 1:22:20Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:22:20Chris Ryan?

  But when they actually.

• 1:22:22Bill Simmons?

  Fifty-four, the Ryan Phillippe movie?

• 1:22:23Speaker 02

  Mike Myers.

• 1:22:24Bill Simmons?

Mike Myers. I wanna suck your cock.

• 1:22:30Bill Simmons?

  You remember that?

• 1:22:35Bill Simmons?

It's one of the funniest moments in a drama of all time.

• 1:22:38Chris Ryan?

This has been a weird episode of this pod.

• 1:22:42Bill Simmons?

  You don't remember that?

• 1:22:42Chris Ryan?

I do. For some reason, I thought you were referring to the Roger Maris Mickey Mantle movie.

• 1:22:51Chris Ryan?

  That sixty one.

• 1:22:52Speaker 02

Mike Myers freaks out and he comes on to what's his face?

• 1:22:55Bill Simmons?

He comes on to Ryan, he's counting the money.

• 1:22:57Speaker 02

He's counting the money, he's drunk, he's high.

• 1:22:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah. The whole, it was a drama, we saw it in Boston and the whole movie theater started laughing.

• 1:23:05Chris Ryan?

  I gotta admit.

• 1:23:06Bill Simmons?

It was like one of those.

• 1:23:06Chris Ryan?

It's pretty hard for me to turn down a Studio fifty four movie, though.

• 1:23:10Bill Simmons?

Well, that's why, so they do the director's cut and it's, you can get it on Amazon and there's like twelve more minutes. And it supposedly ties together all this stuff. It's like a B minus. I almost wish I never saw the director's cut, it's, it's fine.

• 1:23:23Chris Ryan?

The best director's cut I've ever seen is Kingdom of Heaven one.

• 1:23:26Speaker 02

Oh, well, that changes the entire movie. Like, that makes the movie, the, the movie was, I already kind of fuck with it, but that makes the movie into a fucking timeless epic.

• 1:23:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:36Speaker 02

When you watch the director's cut of it. What a weird story, by the way. How could, how could something like that happen to Ridley Scott?

• 1:23:42Chris Ryan?

I know, well, I mean, it was, to be fair, like a three hour and ten minute movie.

• 1:23:46Bill Simmons?

Proof of Life would be a good director's cut, release cut too. Well, we'd find out what, what happened with Russell Crowe and Meg Ryan.

• 1:23:53Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:23:54Chris Ryan?

Is there a scene about that?

• 1:23:55Bill Simmons?

You're not even with me anymore on Proof of Life.

• 1:23:57Chris Ryan?

  I am.

• 1:23:58Bill Simmons?

I feel like Sean, it's like.

• 1:23:59Chris Ryan?

  No, no.

• 1:24:00Bill Simmons?

It's like, oh, I gotta suck up to Sean.

• 1:24:02Chris Ryan?

You can't fucking say that, I was there with you on day one, Stuff of Legends, you know that I'm here with you.

• 1:24:07Bill Simmons?

You wouldn't want two extra scenes?

• 1:24:08Chris Ryan?

Course I would, yeah. Were they shot, though? I can't even remember.

• 1:24:11Speaker 02

  Why would those two?

• 1:24:12Bill Simmons?

Oh, they were definitely shot, those got cut.

• 1:24:13Speaker 02

Those two extra scenes would explain the infidelity that happened on set?

• 1:24:17Bill Simmons?

  Well, they.

• 1:24:18Chris Ryan?

  No, they would.

• 1:24:18Bill Simmons?

Well, that's why they cut them.

• 1:24:19Speaker 02

  They cut, okay, I don't know what's, I don't know this.

• 1:24:21Bill Simmons?

So, you know, he saves her husband in the movie, right? Does this whole thing, but they, she's, he says goodbye to her when they're about to save, uh, David Morse, the guy that she's married to. And they have this moment and they kiss and it's clear, like, other stuff has happened that they cut out. And then it's like this whole, like, love triangle, but we never saw the scene that led up to the love triangle.

• 1:24:43Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:44Bill Simmons?

There's like, no, everything got cut, all of a sudden, they have this tension, it's like, where'd this come from?

• 1:24:49Chris Ryan?

  Allegedly, there was this.

• 1:24:50Bill Simmons?

  They started fucking.

• 1:24:51Speaker 02

That's the most enduring thing about the movie is that.

• 1:24:54Chris Ryan?

No, David Caruso is the most enduring thing about the movie.

• 1:24:56Speaker 02

  The most enduring.

• 1:24:57Bill Simmons?

  Stuff of Legends!

• 1:24:59Chris Ryan?

  Dino.

• 1:25:01Speaker 02

Fucking like they changed the public's perception of Meg Ryan after that.

• 1:25:05Bill Simmons?

Every single week, I look at the Just Watch website to see if Kiss of Death is on a streamer yet. And the answer is always no.

• 1:25:14Speaker 02

  That's a crazy fucking movie.

• 1:25:15Bill Simmons?

Uh, casting with ifs, don't really have any other than Frank McCray was in this and they cut him. That's that guy a word? I can give you, you, so you think, you think Brent Jennings is not a that guy?

• 1:25:27Chris Ryan?

Well, I think Brent Jennings is that guy. I think Brian James is not a that guy.

• 1:25:31Bill Simmons?

Brent Jennings I have, or the guy who plays Ben Cruz?

• 1:25:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:35Bill Simmons?

I didn't even know what that guy's name is.

• 1:25:36Speaker 02

Yeah, he pops up a lot.

• 1:25:37Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's been in a bunch of stuff.

• 1:25:39Chris Ryan?

  I'm going Brent Jennings.

• 1:25:39Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:25:40Speaker 02

Brent Jennings, uh, helped me in my career.

• 1:25:42Bill Simmons?

  Dion Waiters, really?

• 1:25:45Speaker 02

One of my early successes at TMZ.

• 1:25:48Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 1:25:48Speaker 02

Got Brent Jennings on the, Brent Jennings on the street. I asked him about a kid in Arkansas. I don't know if you guys remember this story, but he was scoring too many touchdowns. And they made him stop scoring touchdowns. They said you can only score like five touchdowns in the game and he had to drop. I asked Brent Jennings about it. He got excited. He knew all about the story.

• 1:26:05Bill Simmons?

  Where did you find him?

• 1:26:06Speaker 02

He was like walking around Beverly Hills. I was like, hey, did you hear about this kid? They won't let him score any more touchdowns or else the team has to, it's called the Madre Hill Rule. Like based on Madre Hill who had gone there at the Arkansas. It's this big scandal. He knew all about it. He was excited to talk about it. Harvey was like, that kid's got.

• 1:26:21Bill Simmons?

Then he shot him in the air.

• 1:26:26Bill Simmons?

Dion Waiters, the word Bernie Casey is the winner.

• 1:26:29Chris Ryan?

Oh, I, I asked somebody else.

• 1:26:30Bill Simmons?

  Who'd you have?

• 1:26:31Chris Ryan?

Kathy Haas for the Barstormers, uh, bartender. He's like, are you gonna tell me where I need to know? Or are you just gonna bitch a little bit more? He's like, I'm gonna bitch a little bit more.

• 1:26:40Bill Simmons?

  That's pretty good.

• 1:26:41Speaker 02

I don't know. I had Bernie Casey, but that's not bad. I can get you out there, Reggie.

• 1:26:46Speaker 02

  You will keep your word.

• 1:26:48Bill Simmons?

  I love him in this.

• 1:26:49Speaker 02

He spoke like a Shakespearean, like repay your debt to me.

• 1:26:53Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:53Speaker 02

  Which, which thugs are?

• 1:26:54Bill Simmons?

I would've, I would've watched the directors cut five more scenes of them. Recasting couch director, city.

• 1:27:03Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:27:03Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:27:04Chris Ryan?

No. Walter Hill, San Francisco, non-negotiables.

• 1:27:07Bill Simmons?

  Craig, flex category.

• 1:27:10Speaker 03

Book about metals, belatedly best quote. I think there's some really good Eddie lines in this. I, I think he's very over the top angry and then he balances that with some good like restrained anger. There's like a lot of talk about the wrongful conviction stuff I think is good. There's a line in it where he, he says, if shit was worth something, poor people would be born with no assholes.

• 1:27:27Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:28Speaker 03

I thought that was a great quote.

• 1:27:29Chris Ryan?

There's also a really good line where like he and Bernie Casey are getting into a fight. And they're like, what was that about? He's like, old football bet.

• 1:27:36Speaker 03

Yeah, that's a lot of good quote, Eddie quote.

• 1:27:38Bill Simmons?

I like what he tells Jack to leave. He's like, we gotta talk. Black people stuff. Yeah. Does, he has a lot of good, it's like secretly like pretty good advanced stats for Eddie in this movie.

• 1:27:48Chris Ryan?

And Nolte's pretty good in that series.

• 1:27:49Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:50Chris Ryan?

  Oh, okay.

• 1:27:50Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Um, half that's in research. So Reggie calls one of his friends in the movie, and the guy's name is Willie Biggs. In the original Forty Eight Hours, that's what Reggie Hammond's name was gonna be and Eddie asked him to change it to a different name because he thought it was like too intentionally black.

• 1:28:06Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:28:06Bill Simmons?

So they settled on Reggie Hammond, brought back Willie Biggs.

• 1:28:11Bill Simmons?

So apparently there's some book called The Films of Eddie Murphy and they have the original screenplay for this.

• 1:28:16Chris Ryan?

  What?

• 1:28:17Bill Simmons?

And, um, Jack's in a relationship with a female cop who later says she's, wants to plant a gun at the racetrack to clear his name. And then, uh, there's some other stuff, but that you can find out what they had in the original screenplay.

• 1:28:32Chris Ryan?

  Do you have this book?

• 1:28:32Bill Simmons?

I do not, fuck, I was in the research. Apex Mountain, Eddie no, Nolte. Getting close.

• 1:28:39Speaker 02

  Getting close to the Nolte.

• 1:28:40Bill Simmons?

  Nolte re-Apex.

• 1:28:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, the re-Apex, yeah.

• 1:28:43Bill Simmons?

  Brian James?

• 1:28:45Chris Ryan?

Probably, but I don't much to his chagrin.

• 1:28:47Speaker 02

Well, well, I, I remember, I feel like I remember.

• 1:28:49Chris Ryan?

He was in a movie called, uh, Shocker. He was the star of the movie Shocker, which was a Wes Craven movie.

• 1:28:55Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 1:28:55Chris Ryan?

  Horror movie.

• 1:28:56Bill Simmons?

Frustrating action movie sequels. Is there a more frustrating but lovable movie than this that was an action movie?

• 1:29:02Chris Ryan?

  Frustrating but lovable?

• 1:29:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:03Chris Ryan?

I'd say Predator Two is frustrating but lovable.

• 1:29:06Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's a good one. Great answer.

• 1:29:08Speaker 02

But I got, I'm in love with the fucking movie.

• 1:29:10Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but it's like Predator 2 is, I think we would have a great time doing Predator 2 as a rewatchable.

• 1:29:16Speaker 02

  This is a pitch?

• 1:29:17Chris Ryan?

Just saying. Danny Glover and Bill Paxton.

• 1:29:20Speaker 02

You guys, I know that these movies aren't critically acclaimed, but these, are these movies, these movies aren't bad. That's like, that movie is fun as fuck. It's weird. It's all out there. I refuse to try to act like Predator 2 sucks. That's a good movie.

• 1:29:32Bill Simmons?

You're talking to a guy who did a two hour podcast on species. Who are you talking to?

• 1:29:40Bill Simmons?

Walter Hill, no. What did we decide Walter Hill's Apex Mountain was?

• 1:29:45Chris Ryan?

  Not the Warriors.

• 1:29:46Bill Simmons?

  Forty-eight hours or Warriors?

• 1:29:47Chris Ryan?

Forty-eight hours, probably is his apex, yeah.

• 1:29:50Bill Simmons?

  Cruise or Hanks?

• 1:29:52Chris Ryan?

Wait, uh, Apex Mountain for guys flying through windows after being shot by a handgun?

• 1:29:58Chris Ryan?

Doesn't get any better than this.

• 1:29:59Speaker 02

There's a lot of them in this movie.

• 1:30:00Chris Ryan?

And they take off like twenty feet, you know, like, like you get shot twice and you're just like flying across a bar and out a bleak glass of window.

• 1:30:07Bill Simmons?

It's like Shay Gogeta Alexander. Driving in the paint, flying backwards.

• 1:30:12Chris Ryan?

  You're already starting the agenda.

• 1:30:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Cruise or Hanks?

• 1:30:18Chris Ryan?

Uh, Hanks as, as Jack? Is that what we're talking?

• 1:30:21Speaker 02

  Hanks as Reggie?

• 1:30:24Speaker 02

Cruise is, ah, they don't work. It doesn't work.

• 1:30:26Bill Simmons?

Doesn't work. So we have to pick, though.

• 1:30:28Speaker 02

You do. Hanks as Reggie. Well, are we, are we, Nolte or Eddie? Well, who are we picking?

• 1:30:32Bill Simmons?

No, it has to be the Nolte part.

• 1:30:33Chris Ryan?

  I'd say Hanks.

• 1:30:34Speaker 02

It can't be. Neither one of those guys can do that. It's, it's got to be. You have to pick. I know, okay, what I'm saying is.

• 1:30:38Chris Ryan?

  What about Hanks as Iceman?

• 1:30:40Speaker 02

No, it's gotta be the lead. Okay. You're the fucking, what's the fucking word? You can't just be, yeah.

• 1:30:47Chris Ryan?

  Then it's Hank, it's Hank's.

• 1:30:48Speaker 02

The whole point is who could be the lead of this movie? This is, there's only one other time I've seen you like this. Fantasy, fantasy football. The podcast? Right, no, like the whole fantasy football debacle that happened this year where you caused a crash.

• 1:31:00Bill Simmons?

When you made, made up the room.

• 1:31:01Speaker 02

No, I didn't cause the crash. Hyphus caused the crash. You guys caused the crash. Hyphus sent a dissertation about a minor issue.

• 1:31:08Bill Simmons?

Sean stormed out of the text thread.

• 1:31:10Speaker 02

That fucking hysterical. It's like, whatever, Sean goes, let me show you. Sean fantasy has left the chat.

• 1:31:16Bill Simmons?

It is one of his funniest moves when he leaves the chat.

• 1:31:19Speaker 02

  That was hysterical.

• 1:31:21Bill Simmons?

All right, so we'll go with Hanks. Scorsese or Spielberg? Clearly Scorsese.

• 1:31:25Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:26Bill Simmons?

  Best hang, worst hang?

• 1:31:29Bill Simmons?

Probably Cherry Gans for worst hang.

• 1:31:31Chris Ryan?

I feel like, I feel like the Brent, the Brent Jang's character is the most like.

• 1:31:35Bill Simmons?

  Decent hang.

• 1:31:36Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he's the most normal person.

• 1:31:38Bill Simmons?

  Go to Vegas with him?

• 1:31:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:31:39Speaker 02

Hey man, Angel, that's the best hang, baby.

• 1:31:43Bill Simmons?

  Angel best hang.

• 1:31:44Speaker 02

  Angel's the best hang.

• 1:31:45Bill Simmons?

She's up in North Beach now.

• 1:31:46Speaker 02

  She's up in North Beach.

• 1:31:47Chris Ryan?

I think if you're hanging out with Angel, you run the risk of running into Cherry. That could, that could get complicated.

• 1:31:51Bill Simmons?

  I think it's worth it.

• 1:31:52Speaker 02

You always run that risk though, Angel.

• 1:31:54Bill Simmons?

  Worst hang Cherry Gans.

• 1:31:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, Cherry's too intense.

• 1:31:58Bill Simmons?

Hey, did you see the Phillies game today?

• 1:32:00Speaker 02

I gotta kill him, fuck you!

• 1:32:02Speaker 03

  Terrible tattoo on him.

• 1:32:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:04Speaker 03

The teardrop? Sloppy teardrop. It's way too big. It's like kind of in front of his.

• 1:32:09Chris Ryan?

Well, he wasn't doing it for clicks. He was doing it because he put bodies away, man.

• 1:32:12Speaker 02

  He's a body man, baby.

• 1:32:14Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it was no IG likes back then, man.

• 1:32:16Speaker 03

  He wouldn't have gotten any.

• 1:32:18Bill Simmons?

We've covered a lot of picking nits already.

• 1:32:20Speaker 02

  It's a lot of them.

• 1:32:22Bill Simmons?

Reggie does shoot a guy in the knee at the bar, after having just got out of jail and it's fine.

• 1:32:27Speaker 02

Nothing happened. Assault with a deadly weapon.

• 1:32:28Bill Simmons?

Feels like that would have been something.

• 1:32:30Speaker 02

I, I, one of the nits that I picked here is one of the, this is one of the top nits that I've ever picked in anything. Anything. There's a gunfight happening. I know that the Asian hotel clerk lady, I know she's a handful, I know she's a piece of work. There's a gunfight happening. She runs up to bitch Nick Nolte out.

• 1:32:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:52Speaker 02

During the gunfight. People are getting, one guy's screaming, I'm gonna kill you big! Like she runs, like, there's like, they busting at each other going crazy.

• 1:33:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:03Speaker 02

She's still, so, you guys are making too much noise. She runs up there to bitch out Nick Nolte while the gunfight is happening. It makes zero fucking sense.

• 1:33:12Chris Ryan?

Almost every revolver in this movie has 14 bullets.

• 1:33:17Bill Simmons?

That is weird. So how many realistically, I'll ask American Sniper over here, how many can you realistically get off?

• 1:33:23Chris Ryan?

  Six.

• 1:33:24Bill Simmons?

Like, is there an eight? Can you pull off eight with a gun?

• 1:33:27Speaker 02

What are you talking about? Are they, are there guns where there's eight in the chamber?

• 1:33:29Bill Simmons?

At what point Cherry Gans shoots 13 shots in a row?

• 1:33:32Chris Ryan?

Cherry's not shooting a revolver, but Jack and Hickok.

• 1:33:35Bill Simmons?

  One of those guys.

• 1:33:36Chris Ryan?

  Jack has a revolver.

• 1:33:37Speaker 02

They reload a couple of times, but they're, but this was a trope in 80's movies. They just did not care. Now, like legitimately, you see John Wick walking through the thing? Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, boom, boom. He cycles the rep as he reloads it. But in the 80's, they just didn't give a fuck about that.

• 1:33:49Bill Simmons?

Maybe that was the most 1990 thing about this movie.

• 1:33:52Chris Ryan?

It's just never caring about reloading.

• 1:33:53Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Yeah. So. Brent Jennings, shot to death in a police morgue, getting ID'd like two seconds later? We lose all concept of time in this movie.

• 1:34:06Chris Ryan?

  Isn't it the bike?

• 1:34:08Bill Simmons?

  Malcolm Price, sorry.

• 1:34:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, Price, yeah.

• 1:34:11Bill Simmons?

So Malcolm Price, they ID him, all of a sudden we lose 10 hours. And there's no, nobody goes to sleep in this movie, nobody eats.

• 1:34:20Chris Ryan?

One of the scenes that got cut out apparently is like Nolte getting to Malcolm Price's house, I think.

• 1:34:25Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's just in the morgue.

• 1:34:27Speaker 02

Nolte is involved in what the investigators think is a bad shoot, and he goes to trial immediately. Normally there's an administrative leave.

• 1:34:36Bill Simmons?

  One day later.

• 1:34:37Speaker 02

  There's a whole thing, there's a hashtag.

• 1:34:39Bill Simmons?

  It's that morning.

• 1:34:39Speaker 02

There's all kinds of shit that hashtag. But he goes.

• 1:34:43Chris Ryan?

  Hashtag Free Jack.

• 1:34:44Speaker 02

Hashtag Free Jack, there's a whole thing, but he goes to trial immediately.

• 1:34:48Bill Simmons?

Um, two more pick and knits for me. So Jack is a virulent racist in the first movie.

• 1:34:53Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:34:53Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:34:54Bill Simmons?

And then he said he quit drinking. So did he also quit being a racist? And why not mention that?

• 1:34:58Chris Ryan?

The two would be tied together is, is the implication, right?

• 1:35:01Bill Simmons?

Or did he learn his lesson by the end of 48 Hours when he apologizes to Reggie at Torchy's?

• 1:35:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:35:07Bill Simmons?

Now is it, he was done with racism at that point, or did it still seep out a couple of times?

• 1:35:12Chris Ryan?

  I mean, it's a different time, but it's conditional.

• 1:35:13Bill Simmons?

  1990?

• 1:35:14Chris Ryan?

It would have been interesting if they had done a movie in 1985, if he had still been a racist.

• 1:35:17Bill Simmons?

  Bush presidency maybe helped him?

• 1:35:19Speaker 02

He still turned his back on Reggie, still left Reggie in the fucking slammer, didn't even come to visit him.

• 1:35:24Chris Ryan?

  That's true.

• 1:35:24Speaker 02

  That's what you guys do.

• 1:35:25Bill Simmons?

All right, my biggest pick and knit.

• 1:35:29Bill Simmons?

  Cherry, Cherry Gans?

• 1:35:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:31Bill Simmons?

What the fuck name is that?

• 1:35:34Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I don't know. The other guy's name is Albert.

• 1:35:35Bill Simmons?

Why is this game, the guy's name like Hacksaw?

• 1:35:38Chris Ryan?

I imagine it's Brad Gans, and he just cherries his nickname, but I don't know what that comes from.

• 1:35:43Bill Simmons?

What mean biker is nicknamed Cherry? Like Cherry Gans should be dancing in North Beach with Angel.

• 1:35:48Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:48Bill Simmons?

  That's not like a bad guy's name.

• 1:35:50Speaker 02

I guess the question is, if you saw him and you heard the name, would you step? Would you be like, yo, that's a bitch name?

• 1:35:55Bill Simmons?

No, because he would just shoot me and I'd go backwards 20 feet.

• 1:35:58Speaker 02

Which is why, you're not gonna do shit, which is why he could be Cherry.

• 1:36:01Chris Ryan?

His name is, his real name is Richard, Richard Gans. Dick Gans.

• 1:36:05Bill Simmons?

  Nicknamed Cherry.

• 1:36:06Speaker 02

  Dick Gans.

• 1:36:07Chris Ryan?

  Dick Gans.

• 1:36:08Speaker 02

  Dick Gans.

• 1:36:09Bill Simmons?

  Dick.

• 1:36:10Speaker 02

Dicky. Say the again, say, what did it say in 54? What'd he say?

• 1:36:16Chris Ryan?

  What did Mike Myers say?

• 1:36:17Bill Simmons?

  I already did it once.

• 1:36:18Chris Ryan?

  You're trying to diss me.

• 1:36:19Speaker 02

  I'm not trying to diss.

• 1:36:20Chris Ryan?

No, we got, we captured lightning in a bottle. You don't have to make him do it again.

• 1:36:24Speaker 02

  I wanted.

• 1:36:24Chris Ryan?

It's already on Instagram, don't worry.

• 1:36:25Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:29Bill Simmons?

  God damn it.

Tragically, Bill Simmons' podcasts were canceled by Netflix the next day.

• 1:36:35Bill Simmons?

Sequel, prequel, prestige, TVL Black Cast are untouchable. I would have done a third one.

• 1:36:39Speaker 02

Hold on, I gotta say something. That would be a mistake by Netflix.

• 1:36:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, he's reapexing.

• 1:36:44Speaker 02

What Netflix should do is they should, they should, hold on, hold on, hold on. What Netflix should do is they should cut that and then they should put, do you want to know what movie Bill Simmons is talking about sucking cock in?

• 1:36:56Bill Simmons?

  Monday.

• 1:36:56Speaker 02

  Monday.

• 1:36:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:59Bill Simmons?

I would have done a third 48 Hours over a third Beverly Hills Cop.

• 1:37:04Chris Ryan?

  What if?

• 1:37:04Bill Simmons?

I think Nolte was hot, as Van described earlier, from 90, 93. Cop comes out in like 94, the third one. I just would have rather done 48 Hours.

• 1:37:13Chris Ryan?

There's just an obvious, is, is you gotta put Nolte in the Bing. You put Jack in prison and he gets brought out for 48 Hours and Reggie is the one helping him.

• 1:37:22Speaker 02

You flip it and he's the big star.

• 1:37:23Bill Simmons?

I have something about that for Unanswerable Questions. But before we do that, is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Fergie the Florist? By the way, CR, Kyle the Brant, Kyle Brandt, love Fergie the Florist so much. Did it for just one of the guys.

• 1:37:37Chris Ryan?

  Fantastic.

• 1:37:37Bill Simmons?

In your honor. Or somebody else, who do you have, CR?

• 1:37:41Chris Ryan?

I got Tom Brady analyzing Angel doing both of those guys.

• 1:37:46Bill Simmons?

  Aw shit.

• 1:37:48Chris Ryan?

Well, KB, first Hickok had his way with, with Angel and now you got a question. Does she have enough in the tank for Cherry? You always run into that with Eskimo Brothers.

• 1:38:05Speaker 03

Two talented lovers, KB, excited to see what happens next.

• 1:38:08Chris Ryan?

Just so impressed with her stamina, KB. She's been dancing in North Beach all day.

• 1:38:14Speaker 03

  Absolute talent.

• 1:38:16Bill Simmons?

KB, with the cold weather, you have to change how you dance in the cage. To use your tiptoes. Just want to ask her who gets it, the stunts. The stunts are great in this movie.

• 1:38:28Chris Ryan?

  Stunts are awesome.

• 1:38:29Bill Simmons?

And I think it won the award for best stunts of 1998.

• 1:38:31Chris Ryan?

Honestly, we should make an Oscar for best motorcycle driving and it should be in for this movie.

• 1:38:35Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Probably Unanswerable Questions.

• 1:38:40Bill Simmons?

So, sometimes I'll do this in a movie where it's like, Angel, she's the best. They did this in the Gold Club Trial. Remember the Gold Club Trial? They had the stripper, the Gold Club Trial, they said was the Michael Jordan of strippers. I just always wonder how the reputation first gets earned and then spreads. You do wonder that? Yeah, I do. Like, you really have to stand out. So Angel just apparently, I don't know, Van had any thoughts? What are you Googling?

• 1:39:07Speaker 02

Um, something different. Uh, I, just for strippers?

• 1:39:12Bill Simmons?

Angel's like, they're talking about her in a prison two hours away. What are the measurables for strippers? Like, what's the advanced analytics?

• 1:39:19Speaker 02

But they're different disciplines, right? So if you're talking about a stage dancer, there's that. If you're talking about a lap dance, there's that. If they're talking about her, I mean, there's different disciplines, right?

• 1:39:27Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:39:27Speaker 02

It's like, it's like, there are five tools.

• 1:39:29Bill Simmons?

They're talking a little extra. They're talking cage dancing.

• 1:39:30Speaker 02

They're talking a little bit extra, like what she does up there, but then how that translates to some extracurriculars after, you know, after hours.

• 1:39:36Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:38Speaker 02

But those guys are definitely talking about legitimately which strippers grind on you and get your shit off. That's probably what Patrick Ewing was into.

• 1:39:45Bill Simmons?

So here's what I would have done for this movie, Unanswerable. Tell me if this would have been better. Forty Eight Hours Two, it starts, Reggie owns Roman's. Roman's the bookstore? No, the bar that, in Forty Eight Hours One. Oh, okay. The bar when he's like, uh, when he meets Olivia Brown and is dancing with her and Jack comes in, near the end. Yeah. He's like, of course you know about this place, it's popular with the brothers. He owns Roman's, he bought it. He's now buddies with Jack. Jack gets framed for a murder by Ganza's biker gang. Goes to jail. Reggie has to mortgage Roman's for like seventy-two hours to get him out, to find the biker gang. We flip it, Jack's the one in jail.

• 1:40:28Bill Simmons?

Reggie has money, Reggie's now helping him, but he's got something on that because he mortgaged the bar. I think it's a better movie. It's not bad. One hundred percent.

• 1:40:35Speaker 02

I don't know that it's vampires and like.

• 1:40:38Bill Simmons?

That's, so maybe that should have been three.

• 1:40:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:40:41Bill Simmons?

So you want to keep the Western Brotherhood in the mix, though? Yeah, I like the biker gang.

• 1:40:45Speaker 02

Yeah, you have to bring it back.

• 1:40:46Bill Simmons?

What piece of memorabilia would you want to?

• 1:40:48Speaker 02

Hold on, I have an unanswerable question.

• 1:40:49Bill Simmons?

  Oh, what do you got?

• 1:40:49Speaker 02

Which is a better movie? Lawyer in Lace or Fleshpot?

• 1:40:54Bill Simmons?

Saw that on the uh, in the Chinatown porn theater.

• 1:40:58Chris Ryan?

  Oh yeah.

• 1:40:58Speaker 02

  Chinatown porn theater.

• 1:40:59Chris Ryan?

  Probably flesh pot.

• 1:41:00Speaker 02

You think, I mean, just think about it.

• 1:41:01Chris Ryan?

It depends on how much of a plot guy you are.

• 1:41:02Bill Simmons?

What won the AVN that year?

• 1:41:04Speaker 02

Well, if you're, if you're, if you're into, to, to, to plot, then it's gotta be lawyer and lace.

• 1:41:09Chris Ryan?

I'm saying, it depends, it's really a taste thing.

• 1:41:11Speaker 02

But if it's usually going straight gonzo?

• 1:41:13Chris Ryan?

  Straight gonzo.

• 1:41:14Speaker 02

It's flesh pot. I would go flesh pot if it's just gonzo, you know what I mean?

• 1:41:21Bill Simmons?

The uh, piece of memorabilia you'd, you'd want or not want from this movie? Probably the motorcycle, Ganza's motorcycle?

• 1:41:28Chris Ryan?

Ganza's motorcycle was cool. I loved Reggie's car, man. I know we're not allowed to pick cars, but.

• 1:41:33Speaker 03

What about the uh, Jack's, there's one brief moment where he's staring at that pen that has the naked woman on it that reveals herself when the ink goes down?

• 1:41:40Chris Ryan?

  That's right.

• 1:41:40Speaker 03

  That was kinda fun.

• 1:41:41Speaker 02

Jack's lighter, Reggie's Walkman, all of that stuff.

• 1:41:43Bill Simmons?

Oh, the lighter would be good.

• 1:41:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, the James Brown tape.

• 1:41:46Speaker 03

I want the James Brown tape.

• 1:41:47Bill Simmons?

Coach Finstock, Mr. Miyagi, Miyagi word, best, worst life lesson. Craig already did it. If shit was worse, something poor people borrowed, no assholes. Best double feature choice, Forty Eight Hours?

• 1:41:56Speaker 02

Sure. I got, I went Tangle and Cash.

• 1:41:59Chris Ryan?

Yeah, spiritually, it's probably more related.

• 1:42:02Bill Simmons?

Then who won the movie? Eddie Murphy?

• 1:42:04Speaker 02

  Eddie won.

• 1:42:04Bill Simmons?

  Craig, what do you got?

• 1:42:06Speaker 03

This is not a complicated rewatchable at all to me. To be honest, I enjoyed this more than the first one.

• 1:42:12Bill Simmons?

  Wow.

• 1:42:12Speaker 02

  Told you.

• 1:42:13Speaker 03

I saw the first one because you guys did the original like in 2017.

• 1:42:18Chris Ryan?

  Early.

• 1:42:19Speaker 03

Really early, precategories. I was not producing the show, so I just watched it on my own a few years ago. Uh, I thought it was okay. I thought it was slow, not nearly as funny as it should have been for how, like, it, it's, it's quite racist, obviously, but I didn't think it was that funny.

• 1:42:37Speaker 03

I was like, I don't really get the appeal to this. Like, it's not even that funny.

• 1:42:41Speaker 02

  It's quite racist, obviously.

• 1:42:44Speaker 03

This one cuts out all that. And to me, I thought it was funny. I thought it was really enjoyable. Um, and it's just, as Van outlined in his like top five, you know, buddy cop thing, it's just something that works. If you get two charismatic people, it's a hundred minutes, they're in a city, they're running around. It plays all the way up through the nice guys.

• 1:43:01Chris Ryan?

What are we fucking, when's the last solid black guy, white guy pairing that we've had?

• 1:43:05Speaker 02

  Aw shit.

• 1:43:07Bill Simmons?

I would do that guy I'm starting to really like the guy from who's on SNL now, Cam Patterson.

• 1:43:13Speaker 02

  Cam Patterson, yeah.

• 1:43:14Bill Simmons?

Him as a cop with somebody else.

• 1:43:16Chris Ryan?

I saw a little glimmer of that I think.

• 1:43:18Speaker 02

Nah, we ain't putting him as a cop.

• 1:43:19Chris Ryan?

  Somebody enterprise.

• 1:43:20Bill Simmons?

Or maybe he's, but maybe he's the Reggie Hammond type role.

• 1:43:23Speaker 03

It could be Shane Gillis in somebody or something like that.

• 1:43:25Speaker 02

Could be. What, what, okay, I like, I can't, I think Cam is fucking hysterical. So like, what, what?

• 1:43:30Bill Simmons?

Shane gets, Shane is a cop.

• 1:43:32Speaker 02

I got it. You put Cam with Timmy.

• 1:43:36Bill Simmons?

  Tim Robinson?

• 1:43:37Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:43:37Chris Ryan?

  Shalhoub.

• 1:43:38Speaker 02

You put Cam with Timmy Shalhoub. Telling you.

• 1:43:41Bill Simmons?

Well, that mean you could put, that Shalhoub is the answer to every movie question.

• 1:43:44Speaker 02

The point is in this one, you're gonna put, you're gonna make, uh, e- either you subvert it and you go like, Timmy's like, straight up, the straight laced one and Cam gets to go crazy, or you really fuck with the audience. You make Cam play it straight and you let Timmy go fucking wild. And you put those guys together.

• 1:44:01Bill Simmons?

I think you've already overthought this.

• 1:44:02Speaker 03

The problem is, Moe and Eddie Murphy were major stars.

• 1:44:05Chris Ryan?

This is why I was kinda thinking because of the Actors on Actors videos.

• 1:44:08Speaker 03

Michael B. Jordan and Shane Gillis.

• 1:44:09Chris Ryan?

It would be Michael B. Jordan and Jesse Plemons.

• 1:44:11Speaker 03

Michael B. Jordan's just like having fun for a month on set. He's like, fuck it, I'll just do this.

• 1:44:14Speaker 02

See, if it's Michael B. Jordan.

• 1:44:15Chris Ryan?

But did you see Michael B. Jordan with Jesse Plemons in the Actors on Actors videos?

• 1:44:18Speaker 02

  I did.

• 1:44:19Bill Simmons?

But Michael B. Jordan's funny. He's never really unleashed that in a movie in the red light.

• 1:44:23Speaker 03

Jesse Plemons is funny in Daylight.

• 1:44:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:44:26Speaker 03

So Jesse. Stars need to be more comfortable making movies like this because it's fun.

• 1:44:30Speaker 02

Now, do you, do you go generational here? Because a lot of these movies that we're talking about besides The White Man Can't Jump and stuff like that, there's an age gap. And that age gap kinda builds into the comedy too. So you could go, if you're gonna do MBJ, you can go a little older if you want it.

• 1:44:45Chris Ryan?

That's right. So like MBJ, Robert Downey Jr.

• 1:44:47Bill Simmons?

Do we have confirmation on him doing Miami Vice yet?

• 1:44:49Chris Ryan?

  No.

• 1:44:51Bill Simmons?

  Him and Austin Butler?

• 1:44:52Chris Ryan?

I don't, I don't know what happened. I, I really, I really tried to wish that into existence and I don't know what's going on.

• 1:44:57Bill Simmons?

I don't know if Austin Butler works for me for that.

• 1:44:59Speaker 02

  For Crockett?

• 1:45:01Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, I don't think so.

• 1:45:02Speaker 02

  Who, who works?

• 1:45:03Bill Simmons?

I need him a little older. I don't know if he's old enough yet.

• 1:45:06Speaker 03

I also, I need to know if Austin Butler is okay not taking himself seriously in a movie.

• 1:45:11Speaker 02

Well, Sonny Crockett's kind of a-

• 1:45:13Chris Ryan?

I mean, he doesn't really take-

• 1:45:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:45:15Chris Ryan?

Elvis, like, you think he takes himself seriously-

• 1:45:17Speaker 03

Well, it's a very serious role that he really commits to. I want to see him, like, loose and having fun.

• 1:45:21Chris Ryan?

Oh, yeah. He's pretty, like, caught stealing, he's pretty loose.

• 1:45:24Speaker 02

Crockett's kind of a dour guy, though. Like, Crockett's not like-

• 1:45:27Bill Simmons?

  Craig was an actor.

• 1:45:28Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:45:29Speaker 03

I was. You didn't see my work?

• 1:45:31Speaker 02

  I haven't.

• 1:45:32Speaker 03

  Nationwide commercial, 2016?

• 1:45:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:45:35Speaker 03

  Gruden grinder.

• 1:45:36Speaker 02

Well, then, why don't you fucking do it, then?

• 1:45:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:38Speaker 02

  It's you and MBJ.

• 1:45:39Speaker 03

I'm waiting, waiting for the call. Bring your films.

• 1:45:42Speaker 02

I gotta think, I gotta think of who it would be. But, like, they haven't done it in a while.

• 1:45:45Speaker 03

But, like, Michael B. Jordan would be great. He's a big star, he's very funny, he's charismatic.

• 1:45:48Chris Ryan?

Now, more than ever, we just need-

• 1:45:51Speaker 02

People who are together. And just make the same jokes, make the jokes. Like, make them. I remember White Man Can't Jump, there's like a, the whole thing is directly, just have, have the fun, we know.

• 1:46:01Bill Simmons?

It's never failed where the people don't like each other for the first forty percent of the movie and have to learn to work together, and then by the end they like each other.

• 1:46:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:08Bill Simmons?

I'm gonna like that every time. I don't really care who the two people are. Just keep, I even liked The Heat with Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock.

• 1:46:14Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 1:46:14Bill Simmons?

I thought that was a good movie.

• 1:46:15Speaker 02

  It's funny.

• 1:46:16Chris Ryan?

  Opposites do attract.

• 1:46:17Bill Simmons?

The Heat's good. You like The Heat?

• 1:46:18Speaker 03

Yeah. Uh, the other guys, funny, works.

• 1:46:23Bill Simmons?

That's it for the rewatchables. CR?

• 1:46:26Chris Ryan?

  Another great one from you.

• 1:46:30Bill Simmons?

I thought we all elevated each other.

• 1:46:34Speaker 02

You never cease to surprise me, Bill.

• 1:46:36Chris Ryan?

Make a prediction, who's gonna win the national championship tonight?

• 1:46:39Bill Simmons?

Well, but this is running on Wednesday.

• 1:46:41Chris Ryan?

I know, but, like, it'll be a nice little time capsule.

• 1:46:43Bill Simmons?

I actually really think Miami's gonna win.

• 1:46:45Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 1:46:46Bill Simmons?

I don't know why. I just think the, and it'll open up this whole door to how long should somebody stay in college football with Carson Beck, who's, I think, my age at this point.

• 1:46:55Speaker 02

  Right. Indiana's whole team.

• 1:46:57Chris Ryan?

  Is twenty-five.

• 1:46:58Speaker 02

Yeah. Every single one of them, man. Extras in the first girls.

• 1:47:03Bill Simmons?

Um, thanks, Van. Thanks, CR. Thanks, Craig.

• 1:47:05Chris Ryan?

Did you say extras in the first, in, like, the season of girls?

• 1:47:08Speaker 03

  And Eduardo. Thank you, Eduardo.

• 1:47:10Bill Simmons?

Thanks, Eduardo. And, uh, Zodiac is coming up next. Give a week to watch it.

• 1:47:14Chris Ryan?

  Gotta go watch that.

• 1:47:27Bill Simmons?
