• 2:10Bill Simmons?

A classic Minority Report is next.

• 2:13Speaker 04

Chief Detective John Anderton set up the perfect crime force. People trust you, John. But now. I have a warrant in my pocket that says murder. Seems you've been left out of the loop, John. He has to run from it. He set me up. On June 21st. You can't hide. It's gonna, the entire area read anything with eyes in a heartbeat. So get ready to run. Tom Cruise, Steven Spielberg, Minority Report. Rough landing, have to work on that. This film not yet rated, June 21st, only in theaters.

• 2:56Bill Simmons?

All right, Minority Report. CR has been floating this and suggesting this for a long, long time. He's wearing a master's hat today to try to really capture the magic.

• 3:07Bill Simmons?

  Is this?

• 3:10Chris Ryan?

It's the master of his domain.

• 3:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that's right. If you had to pick, is this a Tom Cruise movie or a Spielberg movie?

• 3:15Chris Ryan?

I think it's a Spielberg movie, but I don't think it works if it's not Tom Cruise.

• 3:19Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 3:20Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but the ingenuity of it, the vision of it, the creative flair. I think in some ways it's one of Steven Spielberg's most swagged out movies. He is doing stuff in this just to, just to amuse himself, just because he can. Just, it's like watching him play, play left-handed, just like, ah, I'm gonna try this. I'm gonna do that. I'm gonna do all my coverage with camera movement. I'm gonna go up a building. I'm gonna jump off the building. We're gonna do all this stuff about the future, but we're not even gonna like, explain how it works. We're just gonna run right through it. It's so fast. It's so energetic. It just feels Spielberg to me.

• 3:55Bill Simmons?

  What do you think, Ben?

• 3:57Speaker 06

It's definitely a Spielberg movie and it's, you know, around the same time that Spielberg was messing around with the darker side of Spielberg stuff.

• 4:05Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 4:05Speaker 06

He's doing this, he's doing AI, and then even World of Worlds with Tom Cruise again is a little bit of a darker Spielberg take. He's getting a little bit more intense with it. And in those movies, to Chris's point, is when he's really showing off how technically brilliant he is, just to build tension, um, using the camera and his mastery as a director.

• 4:30Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's almost like, he's like Jordan, just being like, you think I can't do this? What's your nitpick now? And then he would just come up with something to shove it down our throat.

• 4:42Chris Ryan?

I mean, at the end of Saving Private Ryan, and he's done Schindler's List, he's done Amistad, he's done these heavy movies.

• 4:48Bill Simmons?

  Heavier movies, sure.

• 4:49Chris Ryan?

  He does AI.

• 4:50Bill Simmons?

  Amistad's not that heavy.

• 4:52Chris Ryan?

  No?

• 4:53Speaker 06

Well, maybe not for you, Bill.

• 4:54Chris Ryan?

  You have the comedy cut?

• 4:56Bill Simmons?

  I would say Amistad.

• 4:57Chris Ryan?

  The Apatow cut?

• 4:59Speaker 06

I like to think of Bill on a Saturday, like, I want a feel-good movie. Let's just throw on Amistad.

• 5:05Bill Simmons?

I don't know, Amistad's all right. Deleted scenes are good. Now, Amistad and Munich, I think, are two of the heavier movies. Make sure we get in the Schindler's List and Save Your Private Ryan.

• 5:14Chris Ryan?

We've actually done a couple of these now. I mean, we haven't done AI, but like, he does AI, which is sort of this also extension of Kubrick, right? Because Kubrick was originally going to do artificial intelligence. But he does Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can. We've also done rewatchables. The Terminal, eh, but War of the Worlds, like, he's just working. It just seems like he's like, what I want to do is get into the gym, and try this, and try that, and try this.

• 5:38Bill Simmons?

I do feel like this is the tail end of whatever crazy all-time apex he had, right? Probably tailing off around the mid-2000s a little bit. He's getting older. I think this is the most creative movie he made during this whole stretch, though. Even the way, like, the color correction, like, the stuff my guy Janusz Kaminski did.

• 6:00Chris Ryan?

And he told Janusz, I want this to be the ugliest movie I've ever made.

• 6:03Bill Simmons?

Yeah, it's like, bleached out. It's just, it just really, like...

• 6:07Speaker 06

There's a little tension in there, though. There's a little tension in there when you watch the film between traditional Spielberg visuals, and how this movie is probably supposed to look and supposed to feel. Like, there's a version of this movie, if it's directed by, like, David Fincher, or someone like that with a little bit of a darker palette, and a more clear aesthetic and, like, narrative.

• 6:31Speaker 06

Kind of a thought about the milk that's a lot darker. And that's a lot more intense, but you can look and see the Spielbergian notes throughout the movie. There's like little wacky parts that pull there in some, in some of the chases where they're really intense. And there's the part where he's, the women are the contortionists.

• 6:49Bill Simmons?

  Mm hmm.

• 6:50Speaker 06

There's little parts where he pulls you out of being a little bit too dour about what's going on. And reminds you that you're watching a Steven Spielberg movie.

• 6:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah, one of the things I was wondering is there's that whole new generation of directors that come in the mid nineties, right? That next class.

• 7:04Chris Ryan?

  PTA.

• 7:04Bill Simmons?

A little reminiscent of what he had in the seventies and PTA and Fincher, all these dudes kind of coming up. And this feels like the most Finchery type of movie.

• 7:14Chris Ryan?

  I.

• 7:15Bill Simmons?

That he could have made, and I really wonder if like Fincher either inspired him or made him competitive to be like, oh, they, everyone thinks Fincher is a genius, like I'm gonna fucking out Fincher him.

• 7:24Chris Ryan?

I wonder also whether or not audiences had shown an openness to a, a certain level of grime. Like a little bit more dirt, a little bit more of a smudge on the lens, like it, like the room is, isn't tidy, like people are a little bit more fucked up. Like it was definitely in the air in that nineties into the early two thousands turn, I think, cinematically.

• 7:45Bill Simmons?

Internet, we're starting to be like, oh shit.

• 7:48Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 7:48Bill Simmons?

This is gonna be part of our lives.

• 7:50Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 7:50Bill Simmons?

For the rest of our lives now, where is this going?

• 7:52Chris Ryan?

Well, and then the crucial, I'm sorry, go ahead.

• 7:53Speaker 06

No, no, go ahead. No, I mean, I'm saying like a little bit more of the dystopian stuff is starting to take over sci fi.

• 7:58Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 7:58Speaker 06

  You know, this is post.

• 8:00Chris Ryan?

  Nine eleven.

• 8:00Speaker 06

  Post nine eleven.

• 8:01Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 8:01Speaker 06

Post the matrix. So it's, uh, it, you're in.

• 8:07Bill Simmons?

  I can't wait to talk.

• 8:10Speaker 06

Hey, but that's, that's very, that's a big part of this film. When I watch it, I'm like, hey, they got that right.

• 8:16Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 8:16Speaker 06

This movie has some really interesting futurists.

• 8:18Bill Simmons?

Oh, I can't wait to talk about that.

• 8:19Speaker 06

Where they, they, they get a couple of things right, but I'm saying maybe Spielberg and, you know, other people are looking at it as like the, the high concept sci fi that you're looking at now is a little darker, not that that didn't exist before. But people were actually going to it and craving it a little bit, didn't know where they were going.

• 8:35Bill Simmons?

I have seven genres happening all at the same time in this movie. It's a Spielberg movie. It's a Cruise movie. And I think C R is right, Cruise is essential to this, which we'll get into. It's a sci fi futuristic thriller. It's a cop movie.

• 8:49Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 8:50Bill Simmons?

It's a fugitive movie. It's like a psychic. How much do we know about the future? Do you believe in this shit movie? And it's a free will versus determination movie, which is probably like the biggest theme in the movie is how much, how much can you control of what happens?

• 9:07Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Can I add two more things to that?

• 9:09Bill Simmons?

Let's do it. I already have seven.

• 9:11Chris Ryan?

I think it's his, it's his Hitchcock homage. So so much Vertigo, North by Northwest stuff happening in this, especially North by Northwest, all the chases, all the man, you know, man wrongly accused on the run stuff is right out of Hitchcock, some of Hitchcock's best movies. And then it's essentially a Philip K. Dick thing, which I don't think I really knew at the time because I hadn't really read a ton of his stuff in O2. But a lot of the side characters, a lot of the conception of the future of us being constantly surveilled, of us all being hooked up on our devices and all being mildly addicted to drugs is all out of Philip K. Dick. And he obviously wrote the-

• 9:54Bill Simmons?

Are you a Phil Dick guy?

• 9:55Chris Ryan?

I am a Phil Dick guy. Yeah. I actually went on a little Phil Dick run recently.

• 9:59Bill Simmons?

  You Phil Dicked it up?

• 10:00Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 10:00Speaker 06

Yeah, I got a, I got a category later for, for the, for the dick lovers out there.

• 10:04Bill Simmons?

Well, so the things from that book are he has a pre-crime police department that apprehends criminals. He has the precogs and it's in DC in 2054, which by the way, Van is now less than 30 years away.

• 10:19Speaker 06

Yeah. You know what? I was thinking, are we closer to the actual imagining of-

• 10:27Bill Simmons?

  It's a great question.

• 10:28Speaker 06

Of, of the world in 2054, or are we nowhere near?

• 10:32Bill Simmons?

Do you feel disappointed? I feel like we're so far away from the cars and the traffic, how they manage that in here.

• 10:38Chris Ryan?

  Oh God. Yeah.

• 10:39Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, we're like seven-

• 10:40Chris Ryan?

We can't even build a train.

• 10:41Bill Simmons?

We at least have Waymo, but yeah, we can't, we can't build half that stuff.

• 10:46Speaker 06

I had to stop myself from like legitimately following Waymos in the neighborhood. I would see a Waymo-

• 10:52Bill Simmons?

  They're freaky.

• 10:52Speaker 06

Kalika goes, there's nobody inside of the Waymo. And I'm like, what the fuck?

• 10:57Bill Simmons?

I see it all the time when I'm walking around and every time I notice I I'm just like that's there's nobody driving that car.

• 11:03Speaker 06

You just wanna follow a Waymo for just like one block and see if the Waymo is up to the task.

• 11:09Chris Ryan?

  I know.

• 11:09Speaker 06

I never see anybody riding in the back of the Waymo.

• 11:11Chris Ryan?

Sometimes you wanna throw the Waymo a curve ball, just like run out in front of it.

• 11:15Speaker 06

  Does the Waymo know?

• 11:16Bill Simmons?

  I always think about that.

• 11:20Speaker 06

But you know, you also don't wanna be the one guy that dies like fucking with the Waymo.

• 11:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 11:25Speaker 06

What happened to this guy? Oh, he was testing the Waymo and the Waymo said fuck you.

• 11:28Bill Simmons?

I mean, the problem with the Waymos from what I've seen walking around is they're better drivers than all the actual drivers.

• 11:33Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but you need basically to hit a moment where there are more Waymos than regular drivers because otherwise they're just like toddling along.

• 11:40Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 11:40Chris Ryan?

And it's like, I I think I think right now there's they're more in the way than they are anything else.

• 11:46Bill Simmons?

  You're behind a Waymo, you're like.

• 11:47Chris Ryan?

When a Waymo doesn't take that last, like, you you can go on the left here, go, go Waymo.

• 11:53Speaker 06

But but consider the Waymo though. My great grandfather passed away 1987.

• 12:00Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 12:01Speaker 06

If I could have a conversation with him and I could say Big Papa.

• 12:04Bill Simmons?

This would be the first thing you told him?

• 12:06Speaker 06

I would be like, yo, I'm in a place right now where you there are cars that drive on the street with no drivers and they drive people around.

• 12:14Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 12:14Speaker 06

He couldn't even imagine that. He was born in 1900. It's it's nuts to think that the Waymo is here and it's not that big of a deal.

• 12:21Chris Ryan?

I have that every once in a while with my mom where she'll be like, what are you doing? When I'm looking at my phone and I'm like, well, I was looking at a cat and now I'm looking at British Parliament.

• 12:32Chris Ryan?

She's like, what do you mean? And I was just like, honestly, you just go like that and then something else comes. And she she just, yeah.

• 12:40Bill Simmons?

Craig, where where does your generation stand on Waymo?

• 12:43Speaker 07

I think honestly, we're all in. A lot of my friends take Waymo. It's cheaper. They're like, they're doing that Uber thing where they're flooding the market with cheap prices so that everybody uses it.

• 12:50Chris Ryan?

Have you had a like, oh, my God, I'm gonna die in a Waymo moment?

• 12:55Speaker 07

I admittedly have not taken one.

• 12:56Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 12:57Speaker 06

Oh, you have never been in a Waymo before?

• 12:58Bill Simmons?

My son Ben Simmons actually signed up early for Waymo and was using it before we knew what was going on. And we found out and we were freaked out. It's like, there's nobody in the car. It's just you.

• 13:09Speaker 07

And they can't go on the freeway yet. They don't do freeway. Yeah.

• 13:11Speaker 06

Right. So he's just driving around in the neighborhoods.

• 13:13Bill Simmons?

He's like, sometimes I get in the passenger seat, sometimes I sit in the backseat. There's nobody else in it.

• 13:21Bill Simmons?

But apparently, apparently, he said people, some people are like getting busy in the Waymo.

• 13:25Speaker 06

  Obviously.

• 13:26Bill Simmons?

And you immediately lose your Waymo pass.

• 13:28Speaker 06

The, the, if you're in the Waymo, the first thing you're gonna think is, yo, this is the fuck train. Get on it. And, and so, but, but they're watching you in the Waymo. The Waymo sex tapes are gonna be so crazy.

• 13:39Bill Simmons?

Yeah, whoever hacks into the Waymo sex tapes, it's gonna be.

• 13:42Chris Ryan?

Have you seen some of like the Waymo, Waymo attacks where like people destroyed Waymos or tagged them or like?

• 13:49Bill Simmons?

Why like rear end them intentionally?

• 13:50Chris Ryan?

Trying to surf on top of them and stuff.

• 13:52Speaker 06

  Oh, yeah.

• 13:52Chris Ryan?

It's when like the real like repo man of LA comes out.

• 13:55Bill Simmons?

Yeah. I think it's gonna be a big summer for people torturing Waymos. Anyway, back to, uh, back to Bud Orde Report.

• 14:01Chris Ryan?

  Is that a prediction?

• 14:02Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, prediction. Coming up next.

• 14:06Speaker 06

I'll tell you why Waymo is getting tagged up.

• 14:10Bill Simmons?

Uh, Spielberg was really, really passionate about figuring out 2054. So I'll do some of the, some of the research stuff now. Consulted scientists, invited 15 experts to Santa Monica for a three day think tank. Where they talked about, uh, whatever the future's gonna be with architects. Douglas Copeland from Gen X was there, the guy who wrote that. Uh, computer scientists, all kinds of people. They made a 2054 Bible, which was an 80 page guide.

• 14:41Chris Ryan?

I was looking for it online.

• 14:42Bill Simmons?

That had all the aspects of their future world. It is exactly, should be a PDF or an Apple book. And then, uh, he said to Roger Ebert,

• 14:51Bill Simmons?

"I wanted all the toys to come true someday. I want there to be a transportation system that doesn't emit toxins into the atmosphere and a newspaper that updates itself. The internet is watching us now. If they want to, they can see what sites you visit. In the future, television will be watching us and customizing itself to what it knows about us." The thrilling thing is that will make us feel like we're part of the medium. The scary thing is we'll lose our right to privacy. And ad will appear in the air around us, talking directly to us.

• 15:21Speaker 06

  Facts.

• 15:21Bill Simmons?

All that shit is fucking happening.

• 15:23Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 15:23Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 15:24Bill Simmons?

Like, he said this in 2002, and he was dead on.

• 15:26Chris Ryan?

Here's the best part about what he did, though. Does all this research. He imagines the world. He figures all this stuff out with scientists. He has a bible. But within the realm of the movie, it all happens as part of the action. They never stop and say, you know, we invented self-driving cars in 2034, and they became perfected in 2041. And this, you know, they don't even have toxins. I didn't even think that they didn't have toxins. Didn't even occur to me till you said that. But I was thinking about when, when Anderton in this movie first, you know, is first on the run, and he's walking through the mall, and all the ads are starting to pop at him. That's the first time you see the curated, you know, personalized advertising stuff. And it's five seconds, but you're like, holy shit. What is going on in the future? You know, what is going on in this world?

• 16:10Chris Ryan?

Now, it's very different to watch this movie in 2025 and be like what you're saying, within touching distance of all of this stuff basically being true. But honestly, none of the good stuff that seems to come out of Minority Report? Do you know what I mean?

• 16:23Speaker 06

No, I do, I do. I also think that

• 16:27Speaker 06

the movie is like, one of the best parts of the movie is the world building that it does, right? It does it all very softly, but very definitely. Like, he's walking through there, and you realize, oh, there's nowhere he can go and not be recognized. How is he gonna get around that? And then that sets up, to me, the most disgusting, but also the most fascinating scene in the movie where, obviously, when he gets his, uh, his eyes replaced, which is just, just like, that's Spielberg just going like,

• 16:58Speaker 06

you know me for making kids fly on bicycles. How much can I disgust you and disturb you in one sequence?

• 17:07Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 17:07Speaker 06

But all, but it all happens seamlessly. It doesn't, there's never a point where the movie seems like there's a specific point that it's trying to make to you.

• 17:15Bill Simmons?

I like that they use DC, and he talks about this, where sometimes in the futuristic movies, it just has no link to what things look like now. So they use DC, and they still have a lot of the same landmarks in DC. But it's just kind of a twisted futuristic version of it, which I thought was smart. The stuff that I thought worked, and tell me if I left anything out. For futuristic stuff, that just was cool. The police helicopters.

• 17:39Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 17:40Bill Simmons?

  Um.

• 17:40Speaker 06

  A little.

• 17:42Bill Simmons?

Yeah, like I feel like we might have those 29 years from now. The eye recognition, that's already happening. You could walk into.

• 17:49Chris Ryan?

  That's clear.

• 17:50Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that's clear, that's going into a Clipper game. That's just staring in and then they know who you are.

• 17:55Speaker 06

They make you scan your retinas to watch the Clippers?

• 17:57Bill Simmons?

They, well, they stay, when you walk in, they scan your face and whatever, and you don't have a ticket.

• 18:04Speaker 06

  Are you serious?

• 18:04Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 18:06Speaker 06

  To watch the fucking Clippers?

• 18:07Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Listen, I don't have to wait in a line, they could have all my stuff. It's 10 extra minutes of my life.

• 18:12Speaker 06

I feel like you gotta have a championship to scan my face. I'm not letting the, I'm not letting the Clippers scan my face.

• 18:18Bill Simmons?

What about making the Western Finals?

• 18:19Speaker 06

Well, maybe, maybe they will. There, if, but they can't, come on, man.

• 18:23Bill Simmons?

  Well.

• 18:24Speaker 06

  You gotta have more.

• 18:24Bill Simmons?

They have my face and they can scan all they want out of it. Uh, what's the drug in this? Clarion?

• 18:30Chris Ryan?

  Uh, Nurnin.

• 18:31Bill Simmons?

  Nurnin?

• 18:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:32Bill Simmons?

  As 2054 Fentanyl, basically?

• 18:34Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 18:35Bill Simmons?

Like this new drug out of nowhere? Yeah.

• 18:36Chris Ryan?

But a little bit also, I think, supposed to be numbing and hallucinogenic.

• 18:40Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 18:41Chris Ryan?

Yeah, which is a very Phil K. Dick thing. He has lots of, I just read a book of his where it's like everybody is taking a drug and looking at a little model of reality and then they go into the reality.

• 18:53Bill Simmons?

Wow, you have some Phil Dick energy today.

• 18:56Speaker 06

Phil Dick-ing it up. Yeah, I'm gonna, the, the drug part of it, because in his actual life, obviously, but the drug part of it is always a staple part of the future for him.

• 19:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I think he got, he got down a little bit.

• 19:07Chris Ryan?

  He did. Phil?

• 19:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 19:09Chris Ryan?

  He liked to get wet.

• 19:12Speaker 06

  He partook.

• 19:14Bill Simmons?

FaceTime is in this movie, basically?

• 19:16Speaker 06

  Uh huh.

• 19:17Bill Simmons?

Giant, giant, awesome clear TVs. They saw that coming. Um. I liked how they did the highways, even though I don't know how realistic that is, but the car that leaves your place and bounces in and suddenly you're driving. And then, uh, we talked about earlier, but the, the targeted virtual sponsors in a mall.

• 19:34Speaker 06

  Mm hmm.

• 19:36Bill Simmons?

I do feel like that's probably where we're heading. I mean, we're already seeing that where your your phone can hear you talk about something and all of a sudden you're served the Instagram ad.

• 19:43Chris Ryan?

Yeah, and also the idea of everything that you do coming with a 15 second ad as like payment for it. So you think about like when you're signing up for wifi on a flight, you gotta watch the ad for 15 seconds. The way that the mall looks in Minority Report is essentially what the international terminal of LAX looks like. Like when you're sitting there, there's like 15 giant billboards, just like you, you really do feel like your brain is getting melted by advertising in there.

• 20:09Speaker 06

And also, in the movie, there's so much that's automated and stuff. There's so much, uh, the future is, it's, it's so regulated for you that in a weird way, the human interaction, the stakes in the film, they're like, they're raised.

• 20:27Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 20:28Speaker 06

It, it, like, and I feel like that kinda now is like when you are walking through the world and so much of what you're doing is like in this digital world, that like when you actually talk to a person, it almost feels like the stakes are higher or like what you're saying is a little bit more important. Cause when he's, cause there are parts in the movie where he, it feels like it's technology against him, but then when he gets with Agatha, it feels like, okay, there's a person on the other side of it. Now it's about how her essential human gift, um, which is like all mystical and ethereal can help him out of his situation against the like technology that he's up against, manmade stuff.

• 21:08Bill Simmons?

I can't wait to talk to you about Agatha. Um, Cruise and Spielberg together, zero movies up until this point. Started developing this in 97, Mission Impossible 2 ran over, AI ran over. Um, they were basically like the two guys who kept. Saying they would have dinner together and it never hap- yeah, no, no, we're gonna have dinner. And then, and then all of a sudden, um, it happened, but Spielberg was supposed to do Rain Man. Ended up doing Indy three instead.

• 21:37Chris Ryan?

  Hmm.

• 21:38Bill Simmons?

  And then it finally happened.

• 21:39Chris Ryan?

  My favorite indie.

• 21:40Bill Simmons?

This movie has the following production companies in it. DreamWorks, Amblin Entertainment, 20th Century Fox, Cruise Wagner Productions and Blue Tulip. Which is Jan Dubon's company.

• 21:50Chris Ryan?

  Oh, right.

• 21:51Bill Simmons?

  You're big Jan Dubon guy.

• 21:52Chris Ryan?

I, well, who, who is it?

• 21:53Bill Simmons?

But, uh, but Cruise and Spielberg, they took 15% of the gross to keep the.

• 21:59Chris Ryan?

  This is the Spielberg.

• 22:00Bill Simmons?

The old Spielberg trick. Bet on yourself guy. Uh, they wanted to keep the budget under a hundred million.

• 22:06Speaker 06

Uh, you know, it's interesting. I actually learned about that entire method of getting paid through the career of Tom Cruise.

• 22:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 22:14Speaker 06

Cause someone will go, yeah, Tom Cruise made a hundred million dollars for War of the Worlds. I'd be like, how is that possible? And then that's when you understand the breakdown of his production company and how you can make it and splits and back in and all of that stuff. I had no clue about any of that stuff until he kinda mainlined.

• 22:30Chris Ryan?

And this is kind of, I mean, for whatever it's worth, I mean, part of the reason why film budgets now seem so out of whack is people get a lot of their money upfront now.

• 22:38Bill Simmons?

  Right, yeah.

• 22:39Chris Ryan?

Because there's, there's a little bit less dependability.

• 22:41Bill Simmons?

Because the studios figured out ways to cheat people out of some of these point stuff.

• 22:45Chris Ryan?

This movie costs a hundred million, makes 400 million or whatever.

• 22:48Bill Simmons?

And they're like, it only made five million.

• 22:50Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 22:50Bill Simmons?

Cause we had to spend this much on this. Cruise's director list, this was peak Cruise. So I'm gonna do tiers. This is just everybody he works with from Tony Scott on and, and, uh, well, we'll go like past Cocktail. Scorsese, Spielberg, Kubrick, De Palma, Sidney Pollack, Barry Levinson, Ron Howard. Oliver Stone, Tony Scott, Rob Reiner. PTA, Neil Jordan, Cameron Crowe and John Woo. And then his next four after this movie were Michael Mann, Ed Zwick, Spielberg and Abrams.

• 23:27Bill Simmons?

Tom Cruise laying down the blueprint and now Leo, Leo followed it.

• 23:31Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 23:31Bill Simmons?

And then Shalhoub is like, that's what I'm gonna do too. And that's, that's the move. I feel like CR would whore himself out a couple of times.

• 23:38Chris Ryan?

Uh, this is how you run your acting career. If you're lucky enough to be like, if you just say, I trust the best directors working right now, like you will probably.

• 23:46Bill Simmons?

And they want to work with you.

• 23:47Speaker 06

Well, yeah, I mean, if you get to the position that he got to, you could, you can.

• 23:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 23:51Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 23:51Chris Ryan?

But like I'm saying, like, he could, and he kind of spins, spends the most recent act of his career, working mostly with Macquarie and mostly on big blockbusters.

• 24:00Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 24:01Chris Ryan?

He's gonna do an Interetu movie next, after Mission Impossible. That'll be like his return to like film film or whatever, but the, his run here is inspirational, I think for anybody who ever achieves like uh, any notable amount of success and has the opportunity to.

• 24:15Bill Simmons?

He's coming off Eyes Wide Shut, Mission Two and Vanilla Sky. The next three after this, Last Samurai, Corral.

• 24:23Speaker 06

  Corral.

• 24:23Bill Simmons?

  Oprah's Couch.

• 24:25Speaker 06

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 24:26Bill Simmons?

  War of the Worlds.

• 24:27Chris Ryan?

  Who directed Oprah's Couch?

• 24:28Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 24:29Bill Simmons?

Well, I'm just saying, this is the timeframe we're moving into. He's broken up with Nicole Kidman. Cruise is just about to get his weird on. We don't know this yet in Minority Report. Is this the official end of Tom Cruise's prime right here?

• 24:42Chris Ryan?

  Um.

• 24:43Bill Simmons?

  Two thousand two.

• 24:45Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 24:45Bill Simmons?

He has no, he's bringing still no baggage really whatsoever into Minority Report.

• 24:50Speaker 06

Now we know baggage. I, we, I think we've talked about it before. There's an interview with him and Sway. I, I know I've brought this up on the, this podcast before where Sway actually looks at Tom Cruise and goes, you know what? For all of your stardom, you're just one of the celebrities that just seems like they get it. You just get it. Like you were this uh, Herculean everyman.

• 25:13Chris Ryan?

  What year is this?

• 25:14Speaker 06

This is maybe like, this might be missing, missing impossible uh, two promo run right here, cause it's MTV. Um, and he's talking to him and Tom Cruise is just, not just the biggest movie star in the world, but he's like America's nice guy. And there's no edge. There's no, of course there are rumors about his personal life, but all of that stuff doesn't really matter that much. We don't really have an understanding of Scientology as an actual thing. We don't like know what it is. And then boom. Like four or five years later, there's like this Anakin Skywalker turn where he's berating Matt Lauer in the morning on the morning show. He's jumping on.

• 25:51Chris Ryan?

  What year was that?

• 25:53Bill Simmons?

It was right, uh, mid 2000s.

• 25:54Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 25:54Chris Ryan?

Cause I was gonna say that for me, the probably the, the real drop off, even though Mission Impossible 3, I actually love, but is probably.

• 26:03Bill Simmons?

  That's, that's Hoffman, right?

• 26:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, that's Hoffman.

• 26:05Speaker 06

  That's a great movie.

• 26:06Bill Simmons?

  That one too.

• 26:06Chris Ryan?

And he makes the Tropic Thunder cameo.

• 26:09Bill Simmons?

  But that's oh eight.

• 26:10Chris Ryan?

That's oh eight, but I'm saying.

• 26:12Speaker 06

That's him trying to be a cool guy.

• 26:13Chris Ryan?

The hardest drop off for me is Night and Day. Cause Night and Day is a movie he tried to sell really hard. Like as if it was gonna be this giant blockbuster and I think it was a disappointment or, or, and then after that, it's like Ghost Protocol, Rock of Ages, Jack Reacher, Oblivion. It starts to.

• 26:27Bill Simmons?

And he's basically only Mission Impossible is how we wanna consume Tom Cruise.

• 26:31Chris Ryan?

With the exception of maybe Edge of Tomorrow.

• 26:32Speaker 06

But see, even Edge of Tomorrow is very telling about his career because Edge of Tomorrow is to me, uh, it's the worst. The, a rapper gets to a certain point to where like you come along, you're building your career as a rapper and then for whatever reason, hip hop just goes, we're finished with you. We don't like you anymore.

• 26:51Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 26:52Speaker 06

And it doesn't matter how dope the music that you put out is, like we just, we've moved on to new rappers. And so they're guys and you'll be trying to tell people, hey man, I don't know if you know so and so just dropped a crazy album. They just don't care anymore.

• 27:03Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 27:03Speaker 06

And so when Edge of Tomorrow came out, that wasn't like Oblivion or some of those other movies that were up or down. Like I, I enjoy Jack Reacher. But you know, you could take it or leave it. Edge of Tomorrow is legitimately.

• 27:14Chris Ryan?

  Awesome.

• 27:14Speaker 06

  Awesome, like fantastic sci-fi.

• 27:18Bill Simmons?

  I still like Jack Reacher.

• 27:19Speaker 06

I like, I like, I like Jack Reacher, but it kinda lands with a little bit of a thud and that's when you go, Tom's in trouble.

• 27:25Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 27:25Speaker 06

Like that's when you go, like he actually made a good album and nobody cares.

• 27:29Bill Simmons?

It almost had a word of mouth run because people are like, no, no, the Edge of Tomorrow is actually good.

• 27:34Speaker 06

  It's really good.

• 27:35Chris Ryan?

Yeah, that, that whole thing was like, what, what's the movie called? Like, is it called?

• 27:39Speaker 06

  Live, Die, Repeat?

• 27:40Chris Ryan?

Yeah, or is it called Edge of Tomorrow? And like, I think. It was a little bit ahead of its time and popularizing some of the Mexican stuff.

• 27:47Bill Simmons?

Have you guys watched the Oprah's Couch clip?

• 27:50Speaker 06

  I have, many times.

• 27:51Bill Simmons?

  Recently?

• 27:51Chris Ryan?

I haven't, but I watched the, the thing we base, remember we did claytheism?

• 27:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 27:57Chris Ryan?

At, at The Ringer in like, early days and that was like, based on him in the turtleneck talking about Scientology.

• 28:02Bill Simmons?

The Oprah's Couch thing, it, it, right, it became kind of like a, a go-to joke and we all knew what it meant. But I don't know how many times people have actually gone back and watched how fucking insane it is. It's the, and it's just this audience of crazy Oprah lady fans, just losing their shit every time he gets excited that he's finally in love. And Oprah's like, "I've never seen you like this." And he, and Cruz is like, "I know, I know." And then he just starts jumping up and down and it's like, what is happening? It is way crazier than I think it gets credit for. I think it's one of the craziest celebrity moments ever.

• 28:41Speaker 06

But there's a crazy trifecta. There's that, there's him being just, he is furious at Matt Lauer.

• 28:51Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, yeah, really angry.

• 28:53Speaker 06

And then there's the other thing where he's, whatever the video from Scientology leaks. And he's talking, he's like, "Yeah, have you ever met an essay before?"

• 29:07Speaker 06

I'm like, "Oh, fucking shit, Tom Cruise."

• 29:10Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 29:11Speaker 06

Is goddamn Emperor Palpatine, what the fuck is going on?

• 29:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 29:15Speaker 06

  And then-

• 29:15Bill Simmons?

I love the guy, but he's fucking batshit.

• 29:17Speaker 06

  Oh, no, no, no, no.

• 29:18Bill Simmons?

  Seventeen rewatchable movies.

• 29:20Speaker 06

He's, he's a maniac. He's really, like, I, I'm okay, so this is a dark time in, in time, I don't know, want to get into the, but he really has taken all of that goodwill back, in my opinion.

• 29:32Bill Simmons?

  I agree. Top Gun Maverick.

• 29:35Speaker 06

He's taken all of that goodwill back.

• 29:37Bill Simmons?

I, listen, we love Tom Cruise, but yeah, there's been some moments where you're like, "Oh, yeah, okay." It's like if you're at like a holiday dinner and you have that one uncle who's it seems like it's going great. And then they just say something absolutely insane. Yeah. After two glasses of wine, you're like, oh.

• 29:55Chris Ryan?

I was thinking about this the other day about how he kind of inverted the way actors typically would progress throughout their career. He does all this great stuff with great directors when he's younger.

• 30:05Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 30:06Chris Ryan?

Then he hits a certain point and he's like, I'm just gonna make action movies and I'm just gonna throw myself off of stuff. Even though he's getting increasingly older and probably that's more and more dangerous every time he tries that stuff. This is probably the perfect mix of acting Tom Cruise in an interesting speculative piece of sci-fi drama, conspiracy thriller and running Tom Cruise, because he basically runs for this entire movie, because everybody runs. But I love that, like, it's this weird thing where you'd expect, oh, as you get older, you're gonna settle into being like, I'm Paul Newman now. I'm gonna, I'm gonna play a guy who's having a midlife crisis.

• 30:41Bill Simmons?

Well, we always talk about this. Cruise never had his verdict.

• 30:43Chris Ryan?

Yeah, he just never did it.

• 30:45Speaker 06

Also, we got to a point with Tom to where we just appreciated what he was willing to do to entertain us. He's willing to live this mysterious, almost monastic lifestyle. He's willing to get on the plane. If you, look, you got on the couch, that's one thing. But if you're willing to get on the side of the plane. If you're willing to jump off of, you just, I'm gonna be like, yeah, I'm fucking with this guy. You know what I'm saying? If you're willing to get, I'm watching it, I'm like, yo, is this motherfucker on the side of the plane? Is he actually on the plane? And I think it was those things that kind of like, it were in a era where it seems like people sometimes force feed a shit. It just seems like he still gives a shit about making good movies.

• 31:29Bill Simmons?

Um, let's take a break and then we'll hit the rest of this and get to the categories.

• 32:19Bill Simmons?

Supporting cast in this movie, including a very young, our guy Colin Farrell. Ciara and I did a pod with him, what was that, 2018? In person?

• 32:30Chris Ryan?

This is right when he was being like paraded around, like this is the guy, you know? It was after-

• 32:35Bill Simmons?

  In 02.

• 32:36Chris Ryan?

  Tigerland.

• 32:36Bill Simmons?

This could be a next guy guy.

• 32:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 32:38Bill Simmons?

It's his Russell Crowe mid 90s kind of moment, where it's like, you might be hearing from this guy in a real way now.

• 32:43Speaker 06

I put it as his Jude Law Gattaca role.

• 32:46Bill Simmons?

  Jude Law, yeah, exactly.

• 32:48Speaker 06

To where it's like, hey, Ethan Hawke's deleted this, but there's this new guy Jude Law, and we're gonna give him time to cook a little bit, because he's gonna be on the top of-

• 32:58Bill Simmons?

It's like Billy Jacoby in Just One of the Guys, same thing. It's like, this is a Joyce Heiser movie, but this is really a-

• 33:07Chris Ryan?

Our scouts are staying behind to watch-

• 33:08Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Just One of the Guys guy?

• 33:10Speaker 06

  Just one of the guys.

• 33:11Bill Simmons?

The little brother, the comedic genius?

• 33:13Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 33:13Bill Simmons?

  Billy Jacoby?

• 33:14Speaker 06

As, I'm distracted by Just One of the Guys.

• 33:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, okay.

• 33:19Speaker 06

Cause I just finally, I just, I think about the final scene.

• 33:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 33:23Speaker 06

  I think about the reveal.

• 33:24Bill Simmons?

We're already gonna distract you when we talk about the precogs later.

• 33:26Speaker 06

  The reveal.

• 33:27Bill Simmons?

  Samantha Morton as a precog.

• 33:28Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 33:29Bill Simmons?

  Max Von Sydow?

• 33:30Speaker 06

What a formative moment for me as a kid.

• 33:32Bill Simmons?

  Your guy Max Von Sydow?

• 33:33Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 33:34Bill Simmons?

The evil Nazi from Victory, we lost Van. Catherine Walker?

• 33:37Speaker 06

Because you weren't expecting it, because-

• 33:39Chris Ryan?

Are you talking about Just One of the Guys still?

• 33:41Speaker 06

Yeah. Cause you weren't expecting it, because when she does it, you're like, oh shit.

• 33:48Bill Simmons?

  And it's a PG movie!

• 33:49Speaker 06

And it's like, not only is she a girl, but she is a fucking woman.

• 33:54Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 33:55Speaker 06

  Wow!

• 33:57Bill Simmons?

  You're making CR uncomfortable.

• 33:58Chris Ryan?

  Oh, no, I'm all good.

• 34:01Bill Simmons?

You're back, alright. Catherine Walker, big bone for Neil Mcganna from Dorchester, Mass.

• 34:06Chris Ryan?

  That's right.

• 34:08Bill Simmons?

  Better than that guy.

• 34:09Speaker 06

  Working man, a working man.

• 34:11Bill Simmons?

Throw a cowboy hat on him and put him in anything you want and he's ready to go.

• 34:15Speaker 06

  Walking tall with the rock.

• 34:17Chris Ryan?

  Bad guy in Yellowstone.

• 34:18Speaker 06

Yeah, like just a working man.

• 34:20Bill Simmons?

Yeah, love that guy. Music by John Williams, cinematography by Janusz Kaminski, written by Scott Frank.

• 34:25Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 34:26Bill Simmons?

Spielberg, only nominated for an Oscar for sound editing and I really want to litigate this.

• 34:35Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 34:36Bill Simmons?

Best picture that year, Chicago wins, Gangs of New York, The Hours, Lord of the Rings, Two Towers, the penist.

• 34:44Bill Simmons?

Director, Polanski wins. Rob Marshall. Rob Marshall for Chicago, Scorsese, Steven Daldry for The Hours, Pedro Amadovar. Amadovar?

• 34:56Chris Ryan?

  Aldo, Aldo.

• 34:57Bill Simmons?

Aldo. Amadovar, whatever, talk to her.

• 35:02Bill Simmons?

  Spielberg just shut out.

• 35:04Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, I mean.

• 35:04Bill Simmons?

In a really weird way when, and this almost feels like a little like people are like, alright, Steve, enough.

• 35:10Chris Ryan?

He had his, the Schindler's Private Ryan run maybe like where everybody's just like, you're good now.

• 35:15Bill Simmons?

I don't know how this was.

• 35:16Chris Ryan?

I don't know. I mean, like when you watch this movie and you watch Chicago, uh, which I have not watched.

• 35:20Bill Simmons?

This movie versus Lord of the Rings, like really?

• 35:22Chris Ryan?

  Well, alright, you're gonna get.

• 35:23Speaker 06

  Jesus Christ.

• 35:25Chris Ryan?

Fucking guys in your mentions, right? You got some hobbits coming at you now.

• 35:28Speaker 06

What are you doing? Lord of the Rings is a, you're talking about the Two Towers?

• 35:31Chris Ryan?

  He is.

• 35:32Speaker 06

I'm not even a huge Lord of the Rings guy.

• 35:34Bill Simmons?

  Versus Minority Report?

• 35:36Speaker 06

Have you, first of all, have you seen Lord of the Rings, Two Towers? So get on.

• 35:40Chris Ryan?

It's the one with the two towers.

• 35:42Bill Simmons?

  Sean Astin in it?

• 35:43Chris Ryan?

  He is.

• 35:45Speaker 06

  You haven't even seen it.

• 35:45Bill Simmons?

  The Hours?

• 35:47Chris Ryan?

  The Hours is good.

• 35:47Speaker 06

The Hours is a good movie.

• 35:49Bill Simmons?

I think what hurts it though is we don't have the nine movie categories at this point. The nine movie category makes it director, we could argue about.

• 35:56Speaker 06

Also Spielberg has LeBron James syndrome. You could basically give him a best directing nod for almost every film that he directs.

• 36:04Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 36:04Speaker 06

So it's probably, he's probably competing against himself.

• 36:07Bill Simmons?

Didn't realize Rich Paul was here.

• 36:08Speaker 06

Oh, God, man, don't, you know.

• 36:11Bill Simmons?

Now you're gonna tell us that Chris Bosh wasn't part of the big three?

• 36:14Chris Ryan?

Sean Astin, Sean Astin had no role in getting the ring to Mordor.

• 36:17Bill Simmons?

It wasn't a big three. Chris Bosh, Chris Bosh was a bench guy.

• 36:21Speaker 06

All right, then the Michael Jordan syndrome. He's directing against himself. And if he is directing against himself, Minority Report is not gonna be a movie that you're gonna be like, oh, my God, he has to get nominated.

• 36:29Chris Ryan?

I can never tell if Rich really likes being on McAfee.

• 36:32Speaker 06

  I don't know, man, I'm.

• 36:34Chris Ryan?

Do you want to skip this topic?

• 36:35Bill Simmons?

No. Let's move on. Hundred and two million dollar budget. It made three hundred and fifty-four million dollars.

• 36:41Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 36:43Bill Simmons?

Roger Ebert. What do you think, Ben?

• 36:46Speaker 06

  Uh, he's a Spielberg guy.

• 36:48Bill Simmons?

  How many stars?

• 36:49Chris Ryan?

I think three and a half, four.

• 36:50Bill Simmons?

Three and a half stars. Four stars.

• 36:51Speaker 06

  Four stars.

• 36:52Chris Ryan?

I could see him loving this.

• 36:53Bill Simmons?

I'm just gonna read this, cuz it's really good. "American movies are in the midst of a transition period." He's right. "Spielberg, who is a master of technology, trusts only story and character and then uses everything else as a workman uses as tools. He makes Minority Report the new technology. Other directors seem to be trying to make their movies from it. The film is such a virtuous, well, so high-wire act, daring so much, achieving it with such grace and skill. Minority Report reminds us why we go to the movies in the first place."

• 37:25Speaker 06

  Wow.

• 37:26Bill Simmons?

Raj is like, fucking, that's like a four and a half stars.

• 37:29Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 37:29Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 37:30Bill Simmons?

  It's like a Dave Meltzer five-star match.

• 37:34Bill Simmons?

All right, we're gonna categories. Most rewatchable scene. Howard Marks is about to kill his wife.

• 37:39Chris Ryan?

Yeah, I just, let's just say upfront, there are great scenes in this movie, but this is a great sequence movie.

• 37:45Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah.

• 37:45Chris Ryan?

Where it'll be like, one scene bleeds into the next, you know what I mean? Chasing to a chase.

• 37:49Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 37:50Chris Ryan?

  Uh.

• 37:51Speaker 06

It's difficult to say like whether or not it's.

• 37:53Chris Ryan?

Are there three scenes in the Howard Marks thing?

• 37:55Speaker 06

The surgery scene and then the scene after that, the.

• 37:58Chris Ryan?

The spiders. Yeah, Howard Marks is Red Ball. Yeah.

• 38:01Bill Simmons?

So we learn that the, uh, the Red Ball killings still occur. It's like they they don't spend 10 minutes explaining it. They're just like, oh, this is a red ball. It's like, what's a red ball? And you just kind of get sucked in.

• 38:11Chris Ryan?

Right. And the idea is basically that premeditated murder is almost extinct because people know they will be caught.

• 38:16Bill Simmons?

Yeah, one of the cool things about this movie is this is a pretty far-fetched crazy premise and you get it within 10 minutes.

• 38:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:23Bill Simmons?

It's like, we're trying to stop out. This is the pre-crime division. Trying to prevent all crime with these three fucking bald women in the in the water. Who can see stuff ahead of time. And if they tell us, they'll send a red ball and we gotta stop it before it happens.

• 38:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:37Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 38:38Bill Simmons?

  And boom, I get it.

• 38:39Speaker 06

And like, the passion of the crime and the humanity of it matter, right? Because they can't, there are a couple of crimes that they can't stop.

• 38:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:46Speaker 06

But murder is, it it triggers the precogs and then.

• 38:50Bill Simmons?

I like the merry-go-round thing where Cruz is like with his hands moving.

• 38:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 38:55Bill Simmons?

And then figures out that it's a merry-go-round. Uh, good scene all around. Next one, Cruz figures out the Leo Crow murder and sees himself.

• 39:06Speaker 04

  You're not gonna kill me.

• 39:09Speaker 02

  Goodbye.

• 39:09Speaker 04

  I do wait.

• 39:14Speaker 02

Wait. Wait. You say something, chief?

• 39:19Speaker 04

  No.

• 39:23Bill Simmons?

  A very cool scene.

• 39:24Speaker 06

That is just a brilliant scene. He's got the people up there. He's got his guy behind him. He has to steal the ball and he's figuring out for himself the shock of it. This is why I always say that, and I know people are gonna say, Tom Cruise is actually underrated as an actor to me.

• 39:43Bill Simmons?

  I totally agree.

• 39:43Speaker 06

He's, because when you see everything that's going on, he's doing so many different things emotionally. And the audience is basically reading it from his face. And it's fantastic.

• 39:56Bill Simmons?

You're talking to a guy who thinks he should have been nominated for cocktails, so.

• 40:00Speaker 06

  For cocktail.

• 40:01Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, he's amazing.

• 40:02Chris Ryan?

This is, uh, remember when we were doing WIC? And we talked about the the moment with goes up to the nightclub bouncer.

• 40:09Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 40:10Chris Ryan?

That until he falls off the balcony in the nightclub. And it's like 11 minutes or something like that. I'm like, that's like the best 11 minutes of action movies. The moment from when Wally says, I like you, chief. That's why I'll give you two minutes before I hit the alarm. That's the 40th minute.

• 40:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 40:27Chris Ryan?

To where Anderton pulls out in the new car is 55 minutes. It's a 15 minute run.

• 40:32Bill Simmons?

  Wow.

• 40:33Chris Ryan?

And it is fucking pure cinema.

• 40:35Bill Simmons?

I have two. Yeah, I have almost two scenes in there.

• 40:37Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 40:38Bill Simmons?

I feel like, uh, I feel like Jack Sanders would give me two minutes to get out of here.

• 40:44Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah, I think so.

• 40:45Bill Simmons?

Jack, I feel like you give me the two minutes.

• 40:46Speaker 06

Wait a minute. Did you just make Jack the weird fucking temple precog kissing the unconscious woman guy? Jack, bruh, stand the fuck up for yourself right now.

• 41:00Bill Simmons?

It was a compliment. I just think Jack would do that. I like you, chief. I'm gonna give you two minutes before I call Spotify security.

• 41:06Speaker 06

  I wouldn't be.

• 41:07Bill Simmons?

Dan's telling me right away. He's like, here he is, get him.

• 41:09Speaker 06

Actually, y'all don't even know me because I'd be like, I'd help you escape.

• 41:13Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, that is.

• 41:14Speaker 06

I'd help you get out of here.

• 41:15Speaker 07

Jack can't talk. He's in a pool of milk.

• 41:20Speaker 06

Jack, he made you, he just, that's how Bill thinks of you.

• 41:23Bill Simmons?

  I was complimenting him.

• 41:24Speaker 06

  Weird kissing.

• 41:25Bill Simmons?

No, that's bullshit. You stop. Um, the elevator ride with Colin Farrell is good, isn't it?

• 41:32Speaker 06

  Great scene.

• 41:33Bill Simmons?

We get a 2054 car chase. We get Max von Sydow now that you've seen this movie a bunch of times.

• 41:40Chris Ryan?

  See.

• 41:40Bill Simmons?

  See now?

• 41:41Chris Ryan?

Yeah, just for all my Max guys out there, you know, I just didn't want you to.

• 41:44Speaker 06

  I never knew that.

• 41:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, Max von Sydow.

• 41:46Speaker 06

I thought it was, yeah. I defer to you, but I didn't ever knew that.

• 41:50Bill Simmons?

As Dr. Charles Nichols, would you realize this as you're watching this?

• 41:55Speaker 06

Yeah, I mean, if you, if you know who.

• 41:57Bill Simmons?

  Richard!

• 42:00Bill Simmons?

  Where are you?

• 42:04Bill Simmons?

I love that guy in those movies. This has too, this has the I like you chief guy. I love when that guy's in any movie where it's guys like, I could probably, but just go and then I'll do it.

• 42:14Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 42:14Bill Simmons?

And then, uh, the Charles Nichols and then Cruz jumping on the Jetsons cars.

• 42:18Chris Ryan?

  Mm hmm.

• 42:19Bill Simmons?

It's phenomenal. Um, and then which leads to the next scene. I just wrote down Cruz gets away from eight guys. Cruz runs. Pete Cruz running. Fire escape jet pack fight.

• 42:31Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 42:32Bill Simmons?

Cruz jumps. Fifty stories, possible nitpick because he's climbing a fire escape for like, what? Nine stories, but then falls fifty stories.

• 42:43Chris Ryan?

Oh, just, I, it's, go ahead.

• 42:45Bill Simmons?

It's noted. Um, I love when the jump, like the skydiver move where you, you don't have a pack, but you jump on the other skydiver. They have that. I really like when somebody crashes through an apartment, but they show the people in the apartment not doing anything like, I'm just on my computer. And then Tom Cruise falls through more Cruz running crane fight with Colin Farrell.

• 43:07Chris Ryan?

Uh huh. I love that Colin Farrell.

• 43:08Bill Simmons?

WW hell in the cell, nineteen ninety seven crane fight.

• 43:11Chris Ryan?

Kisses his chain and you know, that's his little.

• 43:13Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Gets a little fucking Irish on him. And then, uh, it ends with Cruz being embedded in a Tesla.

• 43:20Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 43:21Bill Simmons?

  What a sequence.

• 43:22Chris Ryan?

Fifteen minutes. And also so cool that Spielberg is like, I'm going to do the jet pack fight, the jet pack chase. And then you're like, oh, you're catching your breath. And he's like, not over yet, motherfucker. We're going into a car factory and we're going to throw cranes at this guy.

• 43:38Speaker 06

And every part of it has this, the little futures elements, the little, uh, stun gun where you whip that motherfucker around and then you shoot it again. Then they're fighting, then another futures element, a totally automated car factory. That no human workers in it. People are fighting. Nobody is stopping to go, hey, stop fighting. Go get the super.

• 43:59Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 43:59Speaker 06

Well, get the good form and like the car gets built around him and then he drives around it. A completely consistent movie the entire way.

• 44:06Chris Ryan?

And it's such a great image because he's being like hemmed in by all this technology anyway. So he's being like imprisoned in the automation of all this.

• 44:13Speaker 06

And you get your product placement in there.

• 44:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. Lexus.

• 44:15Speaker 06

  Lexus.

• 44:17Bill Simmons?

Short scene, but the Cruz flashback to when he loses his kid is good with the breath holding and the, uh, foreshadowing. Next one I have is blind Cruz moves through the decrepit apartment building as the ID spiders come after him.

• 44:31Speaker 04

Be quiet and close the door.

• 44:41Speaker 02

We got an ID. It's not him.

• 44:45Speaker 04

  Standing down.

• 44:47Speaker 06

  Let's see.

• 44:48Bill Simmons?

Absolutely Spielberg in his bag. The overhead shot of all the little rooms, the people having sex, people fighting, but stopping for just one second so that the spiders can scan their retinas. Unbelievable.

• 44:59Speaker 06

You can see when other people have jacked Steven Spielberg, right? Because, because he, that's the first time I had seen that. I'm sure someone had did it before. But then I think immediately, well, that's John Wick four and the, you know, when you're, when he's got the, the dragon's breath shotgun and he's doing the whole deal. It's fantastic. And that's also one of the, to me, scenes in the movie that's the most heavily influenced by The Matrix. Just those little spider guys coming through there.

• 45:26Bill Simmons?

That's another influence, yeah. I have two things off this scene.

• 45:31Bill Simmons?

Spielberg was gonna create the air bubbles, rising with CGI, and Tom Cruise said, Steve?

• 45:37Chris Ryan?

  I got you.

• 45:39Bill Simmons?

Give me some time to figure out how to do this myself. Which leads us to a brand new award on the Rewatchables. The Tom Cruise Learned How to Do It Himself Award.

• 45:51Bill Simmons?

  Which goes to Tom Cruise.

• 45:54Bill Simmons?

Steve, just give me two weeks to figure out this air bubble thing.

• 45:57Speaker 07

This is sort of the reverse of the-

• 45:59Bill Simmons?

There's no bigger maniac who's not in prison than Tom Cruise. Like, just think of him in bodies of water with like spotters. Like, and then popping up and going, how many, with the air bubble?

• 46:10Chris Ryan?

Well, that's the, isn't that the Matt Damon joke? Or who told that story where it's like?

• 46:14Bill Simmons?

  I think it's Matt Damon.

• 46:15Chris Ryan?

Matt Damon where he's like, Tom Cruise is like planning this stunt for like eight years? And the safety guy is like, you can't do it. We can't assure this. So I got a new safety guy.

• 46:24Speaker 06

Right, right. Remember like the video, the, the audio that came out? When Tom Cruise was explaining to the people on set how important what it is that he was doing is? Like, remember that?

• 46:35Chris Ryan?

Yeah, was that like on the set of like The Mummy or something?

• 46:37Speaker 06

No, it wasn't from The Mummy. It was, I think, it was either from, it was recent. It was like-

• 46:41Speaker 07

It was during COVID. He was yelling at everybody. Yeah.

• 46:43Chris Ryan?

I think it was Mission. Yeah, it was one of the missions. And he was like, we're trying to save movies here. Yeah.

• 46:48Speaker 06

And people thought that that was going to be a clip that made people like not like Tom Cruise.

• 46:54Chris Ryan?

  People were like, yes.

• 46:56Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 46:57Bill Simmons?

The best was when he broke his ankle jumping and then just kept running because he didn't want them to lose the scene. His fucking ankle was snapped like he was, who was that guy Kevin Ware, the Louisville guy?

• 47:08Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 47:08Bill Simmons?

And he's just like, let me, let me fucking drag my leg because I don't want to lose this shot. Like Cruz is nuts.

• 47:13Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 47:14Bill Simmons?

He's, he's, there's nobody like him. So that's one. And then the other one. Top four blind guy scene of all time?

• 47:21Speaker 06

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 47:22Chris Ryan?

It's everything. I, I have a real like phobia about I stuff just because like

• 47:28Bill Simmons?

  Me too.

• 47:28Chris Ryan?

  And, and I.

• 47:30Bill Simmons?

So I have two nominees and I don't know what the third one is. The blood sport fight with Von Dam.

• 47:39Bill Simmons?

When he died, when, when Chong Li.

• 47:51Bill Simmons?

  That one.

• 47:52Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 47:53Bill Simmons?

  Son of a woman dancing?

• 47:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 47:55Speaker 06

  Son of a woman dancing.

• 47:56Bill Simmons?

That one. And there's probably one more. So this is three. I don't know what the fourth member of Mount Rushmore is for blind guy scenes.

• 48:01Chris Ryan?

Let us know on the, in the comments, who, what, what blind Mount Rushmore is.

• 48:04Bill Simmons?

Craig, do you have any blind guy thoughts?

• 48:06Speaker 07

Um, no, I wasn't prepared for blind guy quarter.

• 48:10Bill Simmons?

Blind, blind Mount Rushmore. We're still one short.

• 48:13Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 48:13Bill Simmons?

  If anyone has any nominees.

• 48:14Speaker 07

Comment below. We have comments on Spotify now.

• 48:16Bill Simmons?

Oh, good. Comments. Great. Um. Next one I have is Cruz takes the precog to Dweezil Zappa's club.

• 48:24Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 48:25Bill Simmons?

I think I saw a van in one of the rooms. I, I rewound it.

• 48:28Speaker 06

  That's so funny.

• 48:28Bill Simmons?

I thought I saw you in there.

• 48:29Chris Ryan?

What would you be doing if you could do anything in one of those clubs?

• 48:32Speaker 06

  You know.

• 48:33Chris Ryan?

  Virtual what?

• 48:34Speaker 06

I, I would be like virtual, I know everyone wants to say, oh, Van's gonna be having a virtual orgy or something like that, but that's not what it would be. I would be. I would be, everybody thinks that I would be virtual LSU quarterback.

• 48:45Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 48:46Speaker 06

Is that, that, that's what I would be. I'll be virtual LSU quarterback. Alright guys, we're gonna go Y dig, X go, Z.

• 48:54Chris Ryan?

No, this is O two. You're just handing it off, man. We didn't have a spread offense yet.

• 48:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that is true. Way more physical game back then.

• 49:01Chris Ryan?

I would do a virtual hunt for an October rewatchables because I can't do that in real life.

• 49:07Chris Ryan?

  It's on the list.

• 49:12Bill Simmons?

I really like Duesel Zappa's Club, but I like futuristic. Total Recall has this too, where they, it's like the one place they can get super fun in a sci-fi thing where it's like, oh, there's gonna be a nightclub or like an orgy place and they'll just, it's nuts. All right, two more. Cruise has to kill Leo Crow.

• 49:31Bill Simmons?

  You still have a choice.

• 49:34Bill Simmons?

Mike Bender? Yeah. Mike Binder? Oh, yeah. Mike Binder?

• 49:37Chris Ryan?

Yeah. Or Binder, yeah, I'm not sure.

• 49:39Bill Simmons?

  I think it's, I think it's Binder that, um.

• 49:41Chris Ryan?

I'm certain it's Max Von Sydow, but I do not know about Mike Binder.

• 49:44Bill Simmons?

He's the mind of a married man guy?

• 49:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 49:46Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Not a good show. Um, just not good. Not a good, not one of HBO's best efforts. But he's also, he's a writer-director.

• 49:56Chris Ryan?

  Did he direct Indian Sower?

• 49:58Bill Simmons?

Oh, no, I love that movie. The one he did that was interesting was that one with Coster and Joan Allen. I thought that was pretty good.

• 50:04Chris Ryan?

Is that Coster and Joan Allen?

• 50:05Bill Simmons?

Whatever that movie was, where Joan Allen's divorced lady with kids and falls for Kevin Costner. It's odd. I don't know what the fuck you're talking about. What movie is that? Listen, I'm sorry I'm a Coster fan. Oh, there you go. Sorry, I'm a fan of one of the great actors of the last 40 years. I fuck with him too. Um, I'm gonna give a borderline, maybe could have toned back Agatha a tiny bit in this scene.

• 50:27Chris Ryan?

  In Leo Crow?

• 50:28Bill Simmons?

Yeah, in the movie theater, I remember seeing this in the theater and my big nitpick was like, Agatha's just a bad hang.

• 50:34Chris Ryan?

Well, she's a psychic who's been living in a pool of milk, so I get it. Yeah, I think she's got some big emotions, you know?

• 50:41Bill Simmons?

Right, she can't walk because. I get it. I've just, I've found her disturbing.

• 50:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 50:46Bill Simmons?

Right, I think that was the kind of the point, but. I get it. But that, that is kind of. Not a fun hang. That is kind of one of the things. Bad hang. That is kind of. Tough Tinder sweep.

• 50:57Chris Ryan?

You know that you would immediately take Agatha to the sports book. Just be like, while I have you here.

• 51:03Bill Simmons?

  She's yours.

• 51:04Chris Ryan?

Do you think Nomar gets more than two hits tonight?

• 51:06Bill Simmons?

Yeah. What do you know about hockey?

• 51:10Bill Simmons?

  Kings Oilers, anyone?

• 51:14Bill Simmons?

Last one, Lamar Burgess gets caught. This is basically The Fugitive. I don't know why we ran back The Fugitive, but we're doing all the same beats. We have, there's a banquet, he's being celebrated. He gets found out by our hero, who's the fugitive, and I wrote down, is there a better time to spring the, I know you didn't move, than when somebody's being honored at a banquet? And there's just people in tuxedos. That's probably the number one spot, right?

• 51:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 51:42Bill Simmons?

  What would you do?

• 51:43Speaker 06

I mean, they can't do anything.

• 51:44Bill Simmons?

So your most rewatchable is that 15 minute stretch?

• 51:46Chris Ryan?

Yes, but can I throw two more in there?

• 51:48Bill Simmons?

  Let's hear it.

• 51:48Chris Ryan?

Just because I have some Dion Waiters nominees later, and I would be remiss if I didn't highlight their scenes. I love The Greenhouse. It's such a crazy gear shift. And the old lady-

• 52:00Bill Simmons?

That scene freaks me out, but I'll allow it.

• 52:02Chris Ryan?

Her improvising on set kissing him, and that's Tom Cruise's real reaction, because she didn't say, I'm gonna kiss you on the lips here.

• 52:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 52:09Chris Ryan?

Great. And also just explains everything that's going on in the movie. And then just the Pierre Stormare eye surgeon,

• 52:17Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 52:17Chris Ryan?

you know, disgraced plastic surgeon who's like, remember me? You know, you put me away.

• 52:21Bill Simmons?

  Mm-hmm.

• 52:22Chris Ryan?

And Miss Van Eck, you know, the Russian or the Swedish nurse that he has, just really creepy and pure Philip K. Dick.

• 52:30Speaker 06

I've, the only one that did, it's not mentioned, is the first meetup between Colin Farrell and Tom Cruise-

• 52:39Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, the feel out.

• 52:40Speaker 06

Yeah, the feel out where he rolls the ball and goes, hey, you caught that. Where they're two differing perspectives on pre-crime are clashing. Like, that's one of the best scenes in the movie.

• 52:50Bill Simmons?

It's a good pew pew moment for you there.

• 52:52Speaker 06

Good pew pew moment right there.

• 52:53Bill Simmons?

Yeah, there's pew pew in there.

• 52:54Speaker 06

What the hell, what do you mean by that?

• 52:56Bill Simmons?

No, just like, you went big picture for us.

• 53:01Bill Simmons?

  You pew pew'd us.

• 53:04Bill Simmons?

I have the 15 minute stretch as well.

• 53:06Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 53:06Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 53:06Bill Simmons?

  But-

• 53:07Chris Ryan?

That's about as good as it gets, man.

• 53:09Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 53:10Bill Simmons?

I gotta say, the ID spiders are fucking incredible. Like, and the way they shoot, where you can see all these different kind of seedy apartments and rooms and...

• 53:19Speaker 06

And then how he tries to beat the spiders, he is afraid to go blind.

• 53:22Bill Simmons?

You think he's gonna beat them and then he doesn't beat them.

• 53:24Chris Ryan?

It says everything about like the way the society is structured in that world where like all these people living in this tenement are like, this is just a fact of life that I have to allow this fucking robotic spider to scam my retina? While I'm in the middle of fighting with my wife for having sex.

• 53:40Bill Simmons?

  The Clipper Games.

• 53:41Speaker 06

See? No banners, but you get to, they get to, they get to your...

• 53:44Bill Simmons?

You sit in your seat and then those robotic spiders crawl out.

• 53:48Speaker 06

But like, but to that point though, they've traded that in order to have a society with, with no murders. So it's like even litigating like what that means.

• 53:58Bill Simmons?

Craig, what'd you have for most rewatchable scene?

• 54:00Speaker 07

I agree with CR. I think that, that action sequence in that like factory is the most entertaining part of the movie to me.

• 54:07Bill Simmons?

Okay. What's the most 2002 thing about this movie? Still normal Tom Cruise.

• 54:13Speaker 07

  Mm-hmm.

• 54:14Bill Simmons?

No social media in the 50-year future of things?

• 54:19Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 54:19Bill Simmons?

Social media's not in this movie. They didn't realize what was about to happen with phones.

• 54:24Chris Ryan?

Yeah, also like the idea that it's like, that the person is reading USA Today rather than like, you know?

• 54:30Bill Simmons?

I have a cutting-edge virtual USA Today in 2002, made sense.

• 54:36Speaker 07

  I got one too.

• 54:36Bill Simmons?

Young mustache Colin Farrell was the other one I had. What do you have?

• 54:39Speaker 06

Physical media. His memories of his son aren't streaming.

• 54:45Bill Simmons?

  Nope.

• 54:45Speaker 06

He has to get little discs

• 54:48Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 54:48Speaker 06

out and put them in there. It's one of the things they got wrong.

• 54:53Bill Simmons?

One last one, which I think is the winner. The TV show Cops being integrated in a 2054 movie scene.

• 55:02Bill Simmons?

  Cops is long gone.

• 55:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 55:04Bill Simmons?

It made sense in 02 though.

• 55:05Chris Ryan?

I would just say probably the introductions slash warnings of government surveillance and overreach coming out of 9/11. Which is like he's, you know, I don't remember when the Patriot Act is exactly passed, but like this is right around when it's like, are we sure we would have had like unconditional surveillance powers like?

• 55:21Speaker 06

Well, the spy thing is, speaks to that.

• 55:23Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, right.

• 55:26Bill Simmons?

The OK, motherfucker award for the exact moment when this movie goes up a notch. Cruise gets grabbed by the precog?

• 55:33Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 55:33Bill Simmons?

  Or would you go?

• 55:34Chris Ryan?

Oh, I go him and Neil McDonough and him be like, everybody runs and then Steven Spielberg stages an actual jetpack fight.

• 55:42Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 55:43Chris Ryan?

Have you ever seen the behind the scenes for that scene?

• 55:46Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 55:46Chris Ryan?

It's fucking mind blowing. First of all, like the, it's on wires, but it's all happening practically on a set and Spielberg is basically like, it's like he's Coltrane. He's like, we're gonna do this and then I'm gonna come here, Tom, I need you for two seconds to say this, cut. Okay, moving on. And he's just like breaking down. It's one of the coolest like behind the scenes, five minute videos you can see, cause it's just like Spielberg with like basically no storyboard being like this, okay, cut. Now I want you to do this. Tom, one more time. Thank you. Awesome. And it's like, he just pieces this thing together in his head. It's amazing.

• 56:20Bill Simmons?

  You think Spielberg's a genius?

• 56:22Speaker 06

  What?

• 56:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Like a real genius.

• 56:24Speaker 06

Yeah. No, I, no, I think to, to be able to see story and execute it to that level.

• 56:28Bill Simmons?

I think he's an actual genius.

• 56:30Speaker 06

  Yeah, I agree.

• 56:31Bill Simmons?

Cause I think the word genius gets thrown around a lot.

• 56:34Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 56:34Bill Simmons?

Oh, but this would be a good podcast where we just decide if somebody's a genius or not each episode. I think to me, it's no brainer. Maybe it'd be a two minute podcast.

• 56:42Speaker 06

Well, no, I mean, I think that, well, I guess the question would be.

• 56:48Speaker 06

I mean, actually, the question would be not who is a genius, but it would be who isn't one because of all those high level directors, the que, some of them are probably just great workmen and understand film, but then some of them are able to do things and translate story and emotion in a way that is just innate in a way. They just understand what people need to see and need to feel.

• 57:10Bill Simmons?

It's almost like the fantasy brain in your head, you can see it and translate it as a director and only I think a few people could actually do that where they can just be like, I see this room and I storyboarded this before and that curtain's getting, and they just like. They're in some fucking alternate universe as they're in the real universe.

• 57:28Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 57:29Bill Simmons?

Um, I have three Tom Cruise awards in a row for you.

• 57:32Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 57:33Bill Simmons?

The Tom Cruise award for most awkward moment when someone kisses Tom Cruise. That goes to Dr. Iris kissing Tom Cruise.

• 57:40Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 57:41Bill Simmons?

The Tom Cruise running award for best running in a movie. I think it's Tom Cruise, but I thought Farrell had a nice little moment there with the skid.

• 57:49Chris Ryan?

Yeah. So I don't know. Do you wanna talk about this?

• 57:51Speaker 06

  Run off.

• 57:52Bill Simmons?

  It was pretty good.

• 57:54Speaker 06

  Tom gets it going.

• 57:55Bill Simmons?

Cause he comes around the corner.

• 57:57Speaker 06

In a movie when Tom, in a movie where Tom starts running, you go, man, Tom is the best running guy in a movie that we've seen. But then Farrell comes right around and you go, Farrell can run as well. He's a good athlete.

• 58:08Chris Ryan?

And then he did Miami Vice and he probably hasn't run since then.

• 58:11Bill Simmons?

The only Tom Cruise would do this award could be telling Spielberg he's got the, uh, little drops of oxygen. Shaving his head at the end for, I don't really feel like, uh, like I.

• 58:25Chris Ryan?

Well, they shaved his head cause they put him in the prison thing and they have to put the halo on his head.

• 58:28Bill Simmons?

But they could have bald capped him. He's like, no, actually shave it. And then Cruz's eyes actually being held back by those metal sticks.

• 58:35Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 58:36Bill Simmons?

Which seemed real. I think that's the winner.

• 58:38Chris Ryan?

Just thank God he didn't like, I wanna replace my own eyeballs.

• 58:41Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. He probably asked.

• 58:43Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 58:45Bill Simmons?

He's like, what if we actually replace my eyes? They're like, Tom, Tom, no.

• 58:48Speaker 06

  I've got a crazy idea.

• 58:49Bill Simmons?

Crazy idea. Uh, there's these other eyeballs. What's aged the best?

• 58:55Bill Simmons?

  What do you guys hear?

• 58:55Chris Ryan?

All the noir Philip K. Dick elements. PKD loves a blind drug dealer.

• 59:00Bill Simmons?

  PKD?

• 59:01Chris Ryan?

A disgraced plastic surgeon. He loves a wheelchair bound prison supervisor. Like all of these kind of broken, damaged people are very big factors in his books. And it was cool to see them show up in the movie in some way. Cause Spielberg is usually a little bit more shiny happy.

• 59:17Speaker 06

The moving things thingy, like him moving stuff around.

• 59:22Bill Simmons?

  Way better than disclosure.

• 59:23Speaker 06

Okay. So that, that disclosure, man. Yeah. That aged really well. First of all, like it does it in Iron Man, but then like the, my Apple Vision Pro, which I'm back on.

• 59:34Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 59:35Chris Ryan?

Oh, you, you bought the dip.

• 59:36Speaker 06

I'm, I'm back on the Apple Vision Pro because they upload, they, they updated the NBA app on it.

• 59:42Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 59:42Speaker 06

Fucking fantastic. Okay. Fantastic. Back on it. But you know, I'm doing that. I'm moving stuff around and I'm the whole deal. Like that aged really well.

• 59:51Bill Simmons?

Uh, I had Cruz using his hands to read pre-crime stuff.

• 59:55Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 59:57Bill Simmons?

But added, you know, he studied like tai chi or some, some sort of something to learn, right? He definitely had some sort of instructor.

• 1:00:04Chris Ryan?

  He's chasing the dragon.

• 1:00:05Bill Simmons?

For how to make the moves. I'm just gonna read you what I wrote about Agatha.

• 1:00:11Bill Simmons?

Samantha Morton as Agatha is so creepy and weird. It's a great performance and I also kind of hate her in this movie. But I think it's a great performance.

• 1:00:20Chris Ryan?

  But she's a rough hang.

• 1:00:22Bill Simmons?

But a rough hang in this movie.

• 1:00:25Chris Ryan?

  She intentionally.

• 1:00:26Bill Simmons?

It has to be that way.

• 1:00:27Speaker 06

Well, yeah, I mean, she kind of jerks you out of the kinetic energy of the movie a little bit. And, I mean, she's the victim of the movie.

• 1:00:34Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:35Speaker 06

And so she has to like, stop the momentum of everything that's happening and like, humanize the movie a little bit. And I think you probably like didn't want that. You just wanted your popcorn.

• 1:00:47Bill Simmons?

  It's just, it's, it's tough.

• 1:00:49Chris Ryan?

  It's interesting.

• 1:00:49Bill Simmons?

  Tough character.

• 1:00:50Chris Ryan?

When we get to casting what ifs, I, it's an interesting conversation.

• 1:00:53Bill Simmons?

So Danny says, how much time do we have after Cruz kidnaps Agatha? And a pre-crime officer says 51 minutes, 30 seconds. Steve Spielberg, our guy, that's exactly the amount of time until the end of the movie. Oh, he goes real time. He says that.

• 1:01:09Bill Simmons?

I said, people doing normal stuff in their room or kitchen when somebody suddenly crashes through it. And then, uh, Tom Cruise says the title on the movie, which you know, I love.

• 1:01:18Chris Ryan?

I also love adult Spielberg. So this is a movie with sex, adultery, drug use, murder. You know, like.

• 1:01:24Bill Simmons?

It's still the Spielberg version of it.

• 1:01:26Chris Ryan?

  But it's, it's, he's got it. He's got it.

• 1:01:28Bill Simmons?

The guy's, Howard Marks's wife in the beginning isn't riding anybody or anything.

• 1:01:32Chris Ryan?

But the woman in the tenement is. The woman in the apartment building is riding.

• 1:01:35Bill Simmons?

Yes. It's, it's, I think he has a complicated relationship with this stuff.

• 1:01:40Speaker 06

  With what? Sex?

• 1:01:41Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:41Speaker 06

You don't think he likes it?

• 1:01:42Bill Simmons?

I think it makes him nervous.

• 1:01:44Speaker 06

  Sex makes him nervous?

• 1:01:45Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:45Speaker 06

You talked to him about it?

• 1:01:47Bill Simmons?

I'll bring it up if I if I run into. What do you got for great shot, Gordo?

• 1:01:51Chris Ryan?

I got two. Uh, I love the scene when they are in the Leo Crow apartment building lobby and both of their heads are in the frame. And they both, you know, they've both like, kind of like, it almost looks like Agatha is an extension of his consciousness. Um, but the best shot is definitely the overhead of all the apartments being invaded by the spiders.

• 1:02:11Speaker 06

Yeah, that is the best shot of the movie. There's a shot at the end where the movie reminds you that you're in Washington DC.

• 1:02:19Speaker 06

  Von Cito?

• 1:02:20Chris Ryan?

  Von Cida.

• 1:02:21Speaker 06

  Von Cida.

• 1:02:21Chris Ryan?

  I think.

• 1:02:22Speaker 06

Is talking to Tom and the Washington Monument in the back and like, you know where you are. But then I point out one, like, this is the kind of stuff that Spielberg does. I'm gonna show this to Chris. See this? That's the little bit of extra stuff. So that's the scene that's in, uh, where they're talking and Neil McDonough's character, they, the camera pans back behind his head. And he like splits them.

• 1:02:47Chris Ryan?

  Uh huh.

• 1:02:48Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:48Speaker 06

And visually Spielberg just says, these are two guys on.

• 1:02:52Chris Ryan?

  Opposite sides.

• 1:02:53Speaker 06

Opposite sides. And he uses a character in the movie to break them apart as they're facing each other. Little stuff like that that throws you into the film.

• 1:03:04Chris Ryan?

There's tons of video essays you can watch on YouTube that are, talk about this broadly. And then specifically with Minority Report is basically the way Spielberg will do what other people usually do, like multiple camera setups and editing to shoot a conversation. Right? So like if we were three of us talking, there'd be a camera, camera, camera on me. And then a master shot and he would cut between those angles. But what Spielberg can do in this movie is go into Bill. Now I'm gonna pan back towards the La Croix can, but then I'm gonna whip pan over and Chris is looking at Van and I move slowly to Van. And it's like, there's four shots in one shot.

• 1:03:42Bill Simmons?

We have to get like a, what are those called? Those things you put over the cans?

• 1:03:46Chris Ryan?

  Co- uh, beer cozy?

• 1:03:47Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we need like a ringer or somebody should make us a rewatchables beer cozy. Do you know what I love? La Croix just gets like free advertising every episode.

• 1:03:56Speaker 06

Let me tell you what I loved.

• 1:03:57Bill Simmons?

I do like La Croix though.

• 1:03:59Speaker 06

This is, this is, I'm, I'm, I, I have to name this.

• 1:04:02Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:02Speaker 06

What CR was just saying was this really brilliantly technical.

• 1:04:07Bill Simmons?

  I had nothing to add.

• 1:04:08Speaker 06

  It was a great point.

• 1:04:12Speaker 06

  Oh, Bill Burgess.

• 1:04:14Bill Simmons?

I, it was great. I had nothing to add.

• 1:04:16Speaker 06

  Bill goes back.

• 1:04:17Bill Simmons?

  It's cool. Yeah.

• 1:04:18Speaker 06

I was just moving on to the next thing.

• 1:04:19Chris Ryan?

We call that the Simmons cell. It's like, he acknowledges that you're there, but it's not like, oh, let's get into it. It's fine. I, I think it's great.

• 1:04:27Speaker 06

And then you get to Bill goes.

• 1:04:29Bill Simmons?

  It's hard to host.

• 1:04:34Speaker 06

Bill goes, you know what we should do? We should stop giving La Croix.

• 1:04:37Bill Simmons?

Well, cause I, cause I was listening to you talk and I, and I felt like I was filming a La Croix commercial and then I got self-conscious about it.

• 1:04:44Speaker 06

  Enthralled.

• 1:04:45Bill Simmons?

  I was enthralled too.

• 1:04:49Speaker 06

  Oh, God.

• 1:04:50Bill Simmons?

Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happiness, the word? Best needle trap?

• 1:04:53Chris Ryan?

Is Moon River in this, Moon River?

• 1:04:55Speaker 06

I didn't hear one fucking song.

• 1:04:55Bill Simmons?

I had the theme song from Cops.

• 1:04:57Speaker 07

It is, Chris, or at least I heard that as well.

• 1:04:59Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:00Speaker 07

When he's walking through the mall, it's playing, right?

• 1:05:01Chris Ryan?

  That's right. That's right.

• 1:05:03Bill Simmons?

Big Kahuna Burger Award, best use of food and drink. Flying cruise, eating a bad sandwich and eating gross milk.

• 1:05:08Speaker 06

  Fucking disgusting, bro.

• 1:05:09Bill Simmons?

Why is that stuff in there with like a nice, healthy sandwich?

• 1:05:11Speaker 06

Because they're fucking with him, right? I always thought that they were fucking with him.

• 1:05:14Chris Ryan?

I think they were fucking with him. Yeah. It's also like the idea that like, he's not the first guy to be in this apartment, blind, waiting for his timer to go off. So it's like, somebody else is in there.

• 1:05:24Bill Simmons?

The Chess Rockwell and Brock Lander's Award for Best Character Name. Lamar Burgess.

• 1:05:28Chris Ryan?

Pretty good. I have Agatha Dash and Arthur.

• 1:05:32Bill Simmons?

He's 13th now in Todd McShay's draft. Lamar Burgess, yeah. Good, good senior year as a receiver.

• 1:05:38Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:38Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 1:05:40Bill Simmons?

  What?

• 1:05:40Speaker 06

I was asking what position he plays. Lamar Burgess.

• 1:05:43Bill Simmons?

How many white Lamar Burgess's would you think would be in the NFL draft?

• 1:05:46Speaker 06

  That's true.

• 1:05:47Chris Ryan?

  Nose tackle?

• 1:05:47Speaker 06

Yeah. Oh, big D tackle from like Selma.

• 1:05:52Bill Simmons?

Like, he used to weigh 360, but now he's 325.

• 1:05:55Speaker 06

He got down for the draft.

• 1:05:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:57Speaker 06

And he's, he's firing, let me tell you who I really love that nobody's talking about. Troy's Lamar Burgess. This kid's a fucking animal. Yeah.

• 1:06:05Bill Simmons?

Let's take a break and then we're going to come back with CR's flex categories. Have some healing to do after CR said, I know so this great player before I sage stealed him.

• 1:07:02Bill Simmons?

All right, CR, what do you got? Flex category?

• 1:07:04Chris Ryan?

I got Teddy KGB award for actor doing his own thing for Peter Stormare, The Plastic Surgeon.

• 1:07:09Bill Simmons?

Our guy, you know who that is.

• 1:07:12Speaker 06

Peter Stormare? From Fargo, from where else? Oh, 8mm, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:20Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Dino Velvet!

• 1:07:22Speaker 06

  Dino Velvet, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:23Bill Simmons?

  Our guy!

• 1:07:23Chris Ryan?

The Russian cosmonaut in Armageddon, which is really what have-

• 1:07:27Speaker 06

  The Satan.

• 1:07:27Chris Ryan?

We may have done, we may have low key done like six Peter Stormare movies by now.

• 1:07:31Bill Simmons?

Should we do the that guy, like what I did with the basketball Hall of Fame pyramid? Should we just do the that guy Hall of Fame pyramid with five levels? And Stormare to me is at least level four.

• 1:07:40Speaker 06

He's way the fuck up there.

• 1:07:41Bill Simmons?

He might even be level five.

• 1:07:43Speaker 06

He makes every single movie that he is, he's in, better.

• 1:07:47Bill Simmons?

You always notice him, but it's never like a huge role.

• 1:07:50Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:07:50Chris Ryan?

Well, it's just so fascinating because he gives Tom Cruise anesthetic, like as soon as he walks in, he basically knocks him out. And then he just like dances around Tom Cruise and choose scenery for five minutes. Like, has anybody ever done this to Tom Cruise before? Where Tom Cruise has got to be like, oh.

• 1:08:06Bill Simmons?

He's in a scene with Joaquin Phoenix and Nick Cage, just blowing them off the set.

• 1:08:13Bill Simmons?

I love that guy. Butch's girlfriend weak link of the film?

• 1:08:18Bill Simmons?

  I don't. I don't really have one.

• 1:08:21Chris Ryan?

  Do you like Lara?

• 1:08:22Speaker 06

I thought Lara, I thought it was gonna be the Lara, Lara or Agatha.

• 1:08:25Bill Simmons?

  Oh, the Tom Cruise wife?

• 1:08:26Chris Ryan?

This category shouldn't always be like the woman.

• 1:08:29Speaker 06

  A woman, yeah.

• 1:08:29Chris Ryan?

It's just the Lara character is not that dynamic. And then also-

• 1:08:33Bill Simmons?

I guess for me, probably the weakest piece of the movie is, is Max just fucking up and saying the girl drowned.

• 1:08:39Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:40Bill Simmons?

  And then-

• 1:08:40Speaker 06

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:08:41Bill Simmons?

And, uh, like he's, this guy is so smart. He's fucking replacing pre-crime memories and he's just seven steps ahead of everybody.

• 1:08:49Chris Ryan?

  Recreating murders step by step.

• 1:08:51Bill Simmons?

And then all of a sudden, he's just like, yeah, the drowned girl. She's like, what do you mean? I never said she drowned. It just feels like a-

• 1:08:56Speaker 06

  Doesn't make any sense.

• 1:08:57Bill Simmons?

That's probably my butcher's girlfriend. What's age the worst? No cell phones.

• 1:09:04Bill Simmons?

Cruise jumping cars on the fake highway is the only part of this movie that feels CGI'd.

• 1:09:09Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:09:09Bill Simmons?

That I think if they do it in 25, they just have better technology, right?

• 1:09:14Bill Simmons?

Futuristic misses. Those thin glass data slides you mentioned earlier, the physical media? I don't know. Feels like easy to shatter, easy to break.

• 1:09:25Chris Ryan?

  It's a very-

• 1:09:26Bill Simmons?

Should they have covers? Like I-

• 1:09:28Speaker 06

That shit would be on the cloud, man.

• 1:09:29Chris Ryan?

Yeah, but it's the best part of the movie and it's why people are like, I don't really wanna make movies about cloud and iPhones.

• 1:09:35Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:09:36Chris Ryan?

Because it's just like, I wanna have the thing that we have to run with it.

• 1:09:39Bill Simmons?

Now we would just have the cloud.

• 1:09:40Chris Ryan?

  Right.

• 1:09:41Bill Simmons?

Um, there's a stretch here with, the long stretch with Dr. Iris right into the crazy eye doctor where nothing's happening for about 25 minutes and is such an adrenaline rush before they bring you back down.

• 1:09:54Bill Simmons?

  It's a little long.

• 1:09:54Chris Ryan?

  It's, it's Alice in Wonderland.

• 1:09:56Bill Simmons?

  Time to go get popcorn.

• 1:09:57Chris Ryan?

He's still going down the hole there.

• 1:09:58Speaker 06

Talking about when he, when he gets into her and the fucking plants come alive and all of that stuff?

• 1:10:03Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:03Speaker 06

The plants coming alive, just, it seems like a different movie to me.

• 1:10:07Chris Ryan?

I think on purpose, though. I think it's supposed to be like, you, he's now passed into the realm of like fantasy and-

• 1:10:14Speaker 06

  Mysticism.

• 1:10:15Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:10:16Bill Simmons?

Fox did a remake series in 2015 that I forgot about.

• 1:10:19Speaker 06

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:10:20Bill Simmons?

  Didn't last.

• 1:10:23Bill Simmons?

Dr. Iris says the precogs abilities are the result of brain damage caused by parents being addicted to neurone during pregnancy.

• 1:10:36Bill Simmons?

Don't do neurone when you're pregnant. So what's age the worst for me? I care about your kids, even though neurone is not an actual drug. What do you got for what's age the worst?

• 1:10:46Chris Ryan?

I didn't, uh, I just, I just can't handle a lot of stuff from clockwork or Orange John. When they started fucking with people's eyes.

• 1:10:53Speaker 06

Yeah. Eating gross shit. I just can't, when he eat, every time he eats the shit and he drinks it, can't, physical media thing and literally the, the, uh, the CGI when they're jumping around, that's like Star Wars prequel level. This is fake.

• 1:11:10Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:10Speaker 06

  Type of shit.

• 1:11:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah, and that's unfortunately O2 is right around. We had some stuff figured out, but others.

• 1:11:17Chris Ryan?

I mean, they're able to do the matrix. So like it's, it's pretty good.

• 1:11:19Speaker 06

It looked as, it looked better than it had ever looked up to that point, but the jump between now and then like 2008, when Iron Man comes out.

• 1:11:29Bill Simmons?

Fucking sinners with like Michael B. Jordan just playing two parts next to each other for two and a half hours.

• 1:11:35Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:11:36Bill Simmons?

The rough Lohanna ribbon neck partridge over acting word.

• 1:11:38Speaker 06

I know. That's an easy one.

• 1:11:40Bill Simmons?

  What do you got?

• 1:11:41Speaker 06

Sagatha. I mean, not over, I mean, just it's a turning it up to fucking 14. I don't, I don't mind as much as you do, but like screaming, yelling.

• 1:11:50Bill Simmons?

It's a borderline you could throw in the category.

• 1:11:53Chris Ryan?

Oh, yeah, I got the over acting word. Yeah.

• 1:11:56Bill Simmons?

When he's about to kill Mike Binder and they do a couple ISO shots of her just screaming her fucking head off. It's like, okay, let's take, let's cut one back.

• 1:12:19Bill Simmons?

Ben, what do you have for a flex category?

• 1:12:21Speaker 06

  Best dick ever.

• 1:12:23Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:12:24Speaker 06

So it's a, mine is always a list, and I want CR, our resident dickhead here, to

• 1:12:34Speaker 06

what are the best Philip K. Dick movie adaptations?

• 1:12:39Chris Ryan?

  Oh.

• 1:12:39Speaker 06

  So I got Minority Report.

• 1:12:41Bill Simmons?

I thought that was gonna be the AVN award for a second.

• 1:12:45Speaker 06

Minority Report, Total Recall, Scanner Darkly, Blade Runner, and then I put the Adjustment Bureau on there because I love that movie. Am I leaving anything off?

• 1:12:56Chris Ryan?

Uh, I don't think so. There've been some like animated series and series where it's like riffing on themes from his, his works, but I think those are the big ones. I would put Blade Runner number one.

• 1:13:08Speaker 06

Blade Runner number two. So give me a ranking.

• 1:13:11Chris Ryan?

I would go Blade Runner, Total Recall, my, probably Blade Runner, Minority Report, Total Recall, and, and then.

• 1:13:20Speaker 06

  Scanner Darkly.

• 1:13:20Chris Ryan?

Even though Scanner Darkly in some ways is the most Philip K. Dick thing.

• 1:13:25Speaker 06

Are you an Adjustment Bureau guy?

• 1:13:26Chris Ryan?

  I'm not.

• 1:13:27Speaker 06

You're not? Are you an Adjustment Bureau guy?

• 1:13:29Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:13:29Speaker 06

  Interesting.

• 1:13:29Bill Simmons?

  No, sir.

• 1:13:32Bill Simmons?

I think, I agree with CR's list, but I think Total Recall is also the one, if I could, if I was trapped on a desert island.

• 1:13:38Chris Ryan?

  That's where I'd watch those.

• 1:13:40Bill Simmons?

  I'd probably take that one.

• 1:13:41Speaker 06

Yeah, to me, that's the best one.

• 1:13:43Bill Simmons?

Cause you get the three boob lady if you get Total Recall.

• 1:13:46Speaker 06

Yeah, that's the best. Or, oh no, actually, you know what? It's not the best one yet.

• 1:13:50Bill Simmons?

It's just the most, it's the most entertaining rewatchable of all of them.

• 1:13:53Speaker 06

But Blade Runner's the best one.

• 1:13:55Bill Simmons?

  Blade Runner's the best one.

• 1:13:56Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:13:57Bill Simmons?

It's like how Raging Bull is awesome, but you wouldn't wanna watch Raging Bull a hundred times.

• 1:14:00Chris Ryan?

Yeah, you'd rather watch like Rocky or something, but yeah.

• 1:14:05Bill Simmons?

Do you know that in like 2006? Somebody made a Jake LaMotta movie? Cause it was on cable.

• 1:14:13Chris Ryan?

  Are you serious?

• 1:14:13Speaker 06

  I've never heard of this.

• 1:14:14Bill Simmons?

And it was like Jake LaMotta and I it was like some, I forget who the actor was. Was like, can you imagine being like, you know what, we might be, it might be time to re-explore Jake LaMotta.

• 1:14:24Speaker 06

Balls on that, the balls on that fucking guy.

• 1:14:28Bill Simmons?

Hey, the CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford. How does take a word? Ben, do you have one?

• 1:14:33Speaker 06

  I do not.

• 1:14:34Bill Simmons?

I have one. I'll do one for you.

• 1:14:35Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:14:36Bill Simmons?

Precogs. The greatest professional sports gambling weapon ever created in a movie, hands down.

• 1:14:42Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:43Bill Simmons?

There's a whole subplot movie with, uh, precogs, like just basically making all these money for gamblers and then being on, on the run.

• 1:14:51Chris Ryan?

If you're John Anderton, just make the run to Vegas with Agatha while you can't or AC.

• 1:14:56Bill Simmons?

  Atlantic City, yeah.

• 1:14:57Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, for God.

• 1:14:58Speaker 06

The guy has access to the precogs. And look, the villain here is a villain, kills someone, but he also kinda.

• 1:15:07Speaker 06

I mean, he's, he's kinda got some points, right? He tries to stop murder. I wouldn't have tried to stop murder if I had the precogs.

• 1:15:14Bill Simmons?

  Right, use them financially.

• 1:15:17Speaker 06

  We running it up.

• 1:15:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:18Speaker 06

We playing the market, we doing all kinds, we doing all kinds of stuff, we running it up. He did something for the public good.

• 1:15:25Bill Simmons?

  It's true.

• 1:15:25Speaker 06

  In a bad way.

• 1:15:26Bill Simmons?

Precog has Oilers game two. Goal and a half.

• 1:15:30Speaker 06

  Put Agatha.

• 1:15:31Bill Simmons?

  Plus 150.

• 1:15:32Speaker 06

Put a nice visor on her.

• 1:15:33Chris Ryan?

I love taking the idea of like, this person is telepathic. Yeah.

• 1:15:39Speaker 06

  Connor McDavid, two goals.

• 1:15:44Bill Simmons?

All right. Do you have a hottest ticker?

• 1:15:46Chris Ryan?

Yeah, so this one is from the perspective of Howard Marks. Let's say you're Howard, right?

• 1:15:51Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:52Chris Ryan?

Aren't you like? Why don't we just stop my wife from cheating? Why don't we like, why don't like, if we, if you can see the whole crime, wouldn't it be better if Anderton came by and was just like, don't cheat on Howard? He's gonna flip out if you do that.

• 1:16:06Bill Simmons?

  So go through further back.

• 1:16:07Chris Ryan?

Yeah, or just like, why is the precog only paying attention to the end result like murder? And not the pre-triggering event? Right? Cause if you're Howard, you're like, I never would have considered killing my wife unless she cheated on me. So if you could just go back in time, couldn't somebody be like, hey, we gotta yank this guy who's like, gonna, gonna cheat on.

• 1:16:29Speaker 06

So the precog really kinda fucks over Howard a little bit.

• 1:16:32Chris Ryan?

Well, I mean, I understand that the ultimate crime is murder, right? Like the people are gonna cheat on each other, people are gonna have feelings for one another. But it is kind of like, for that kind of crime of passion, it seems like if she hasn't cheated, he's like, oh, I thought maybe we could go to lunch together today.

• 1:16:46Bill Simmons?

So you don't stop Rich Paul from saying that Chris Bosh wasn't really a big three. You go back further.

• 1:16:51Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:16:52Bill Simmons?

And stop LeBron James from hiring. That's your move. Then we don't have the Chris Bosh thing anyway, but yeah.

• 1:17:00Chris Ryan?

  Exactly.

• 1:17:00Bill Simmons?

Okay, I got you. Casting what ifs. This was optioned in 1992 as a sequel to Total Recall with Schwarzenegger.

• 1:17:08Chris Ryan?

  Yep.

• 1:17:09Bill Simmons?

And Carol Co Productions, which we've talked, Carol Call Pictures, which we've talked about on a couple Kyle Brand rewatchables. Fought for bankruptcy. And there's a documentary about this whole thing, so it got worked into a different thing. Jan Dubonk came in 97.

• 1:17:26Bill Simmons?

And then, uh, and that didn't work out. And then the biggest casting what if for this was Spielberg comes on, offers the role, the Colin Farrell role to Matt Damon. Offers Dr. Iris to Beryl Streep. Offers Lamar Burgess 320 pound nose tackle to Ian McKellen. Offers Agatha to Cate Blanchett. And offers Lara to Jenna Elfman. And Street Declines, Damon's doing Ocean's Eleven. Everybody else.

• 1:17:57Chris Ryan?

McCallum's in the Two Towers, yeah.

• 1:17:59Bill Simmons?

  Javier Bardem.

• 1:18:00Chris Ryan?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:18:01Bill Simmons?

Then offered the Whitworth role, the Colin Farrell role, he can't do it either.

• 1:18:04Chris Ryan?

Did you see why he turned it down?

• 1:18:05Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:18:05Chris Ryan?

He said he didn't feel like chasing Tom Cruise around for an entire movie.

• 1:18:08Speaker 06

  That's funny.

• 1:18:09Bill Simmons?

  Wow.

• 1:18:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:11Bill Simmons?

Now he's gonna be chasing Brad Pitt around in F1. Saw that trailer yesterday.

• 1:18:16Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:18:16Bill Simmons?

  I'm in.

• 1:18:17Speaker 06

You're way up on it, you love it.

• 1:18:18Bill Simmons?

I'm in. It's Days of Thunder with F1 cars, I'm in.

• 1:18:22Speaker 06

Can't tell what it's really about.

• 1:18:24Bill Simmons?

I'm still gonna go to the theater.

• 1:18:26Chris Ryan?

It's about an older racer and a younger racer.

• 1:18:28Speaker 06

It's just, it, it looks cool. They've never tried that. It, it looks cool, but I, I still haven't seen the thing that makes me go, oh, Jesus Christ, I gotta see F1.

• 1:18:35Bill Simmons?

Best that guy award, obviously it's gonna be Dino Velvet from Eight Millimeter unless you think Peter Stormor is his own guy.

• 1:18:41Speaker 06

  I think he's Peter Stormor.

• 1:18:42Chris Ryan?

Not only is he his own guy, he's in the Dion category. I, I had Patrick Kilpatrick, who is the guy standing next to Sean McDonough. Or Steve Harris, but I don't know if Steve Harris.

• 1:18:52Speaker 06

Maybe, in movies, in movies he might be.

• 1:18:54Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:54Bill Simmons?

  I had Steve Harris.

• 1:18:56Speaker 06

  You know who I have?

• 1:18:57Bill Simmons?

Eric Gross is Eric Gross, but I think he's Eric Gross.

• 1:18:59Chris Ryan?

  He's Eric Gross to me.

• 1:19:00Bill Simmons?

  He's in Perfect Strangers.

• 1:19:01Speaker 06

Perfect Strangers, star of one of my favorite movies. The Experts.

• 1:19:06Bill Simmons?

Oh, John Travolta and Kelly Preston?

• 1:19:08Speaker 06

Fake John Travolta, Kelly Preston. Like, I'm telling you, guys go watch The Experts, the fake town in Russia that doesn't know it's there in Russia.

• 1:19:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:18Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:19:19Bill Simmons?

Um, I vote for Steve Harris, he's the black guy who works for Cruise, for people listening.

• 1:19:23Speaker 06

  Wood Harris' brother.

• 1:19:25Bill Simmons?

  Really?

• 1:19:26Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:19:28Bill Simmons?

Why wasn't he in The Wire?

• 1:19:29Speaker 06

  That's what.

• 1:19:30Bill Simmons?

  He couldn't have been like.

• 1:19:31Speaker 06

I don't know that there's a rule that you have to cast everybody.

• 1:19:35Bill Simmons?

Like Don Barksdale, like his brother that comes in for one episode?

• 1:19:38Speaker 06

Don Barksdale, that's Wood Harris' brother, yeah.

• 1:19:41Bill Simmons?

Dion Waiters, we have, uh, we have our guy Peter Stormor.

• 1:19:45Speaker 06

  Yes.

• 1:19:45Bill Simmons?

  With Dweezil Zappa?

• 1:19:46Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:47Speaker 06

  Tim Blake Nelson?

• 1:19:48Bill Simmons?

  Dr. Iris?

• 1:19:49Chris Ryan?

I would say Lois Smith is Dr. Iris and, and also Tim Blake Nelson as Gideon.

• 1:19:54Speaker 06

  The Sentry, yeah.

• 1:19:55Bill Simmons?

  I would go Dweezil.

• 1:19:57Chris Ryan?

  Oh, I'm going.

• 1:19:57Bill Simmons?

Doing a lot in four minutes.

• 1:19:58Chris Ryan?

  I'm going Stormor.

• 1:19:59Speaker 06

Yeah, it's easy one right there, yeah.

• 1:20:01Bill Simmons?

  Oh, yeah, Stormor.

• 1:20:01Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, you're right, you're right.

• 1:20:03Bill Simmons?

Recasting Couch Director City, what do you got?

• 1:20:06Chris Ryan?

I think DC is a cool place to put this. I think it's like

• 1:20:09Bill Simmons?

  Boston?

• 1:20:09Chris Ryan?

It's consistent. Yeah, Southie. Minority Report in Southie.

• 1:20:14Speaker 06

I'm so close. I wanted to, I'm not, I'm gonna let you slide.

• 1:20:18Bill Simmons?

  Don't do it.

• 1:20:18Speaker 06

I'm not gonna bring it up.

• 1:20:19Chris Ryan?

I like it in DC. It feels like all the presidents, man.

• 1:20:21Bill Simmons?

  In New Orleans?

• 1:20:22Speaker 06

If the movie's called Minority Report and it's in Boston, it would be a different movie.

• 1:20:26Bill Simmons?

  New Orleans?

• 1:20:27Speaker 06

  New Orleans would be good.

• 1:20:29Chris Ryan?

Philly, you could do it in Philly, running by the Liberty Bell, you know?

• 1:20:33Speaker 06

Is this, is this a Miami movie?

• 1:20:37Chris Ryan?

I think you need a dense.

• 1:20:38Bill Simmons?

  It's Miami's too happy.

• 1:20:40Chris Ryan?

I like the idea of like an old city that has been redone in a futuristic way.

• 1:20:44Bill Simmons?

The other place I was thinking was London.

• 1:20:45Speaker 06

  Chicago.

• 1:20:47Bill Simmons?

But London's the obvious place to do it, but that's not in America.

• 1:20:50Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:20:52Bill Simmons?

Recasting for me, can we test drive Jada Pinkett as Agatha?

• 1:21:00Bill Simmons?

Can you give that a whirl?

• 1:21:01Chris Ryan?

Cate Blanchett is like an incredible child.

• 1:21:03Bill Simmons?

But Cate Blanchett's like, I don't know, she's like one of the best actresses the last 25 years.

• 1:21:08Chris Ryan?

But in 02, she was like

• 1:21:10Speaker 06

  Still making it up.

• 1:21:10Chris Ryan?

  Coming up.

• 1:21:12Speaker 06

  So after what happened with

• 1:21:15Chris Ryan?

Samantha Morton is also really good in a lot of stuff.

• 1:21:17Bill Simmons?

I get it. I'm just like Jada Pinkett, because she, I like when she has a shaved head anyway, so I don't know.

• 1:21:22Speaker 06

You're gonna get Chris fucked over 30 years before.

• 1:21:25Bill Simmons?

Different Oscars joke. Yeah, we're rewriting history.

• 1:21:28Speaker 06

He makes the joke. It's like, yeah.

• 1:21:31Bill Simmons?

Portman's probably too young at that point?

• 1:21:34Speaker 06

  She's in her twenties. I mean, she's, she's, she's in Star Wars at that point where she's like, she's, she's 22, 23.

• 1:21:41Bill Simmons?

Can I uneasily test drive a casting suggestion for this to change the flavor of the movie a tiny bit? What about Halle Berry?

• 1:21:49Speaker 06

  Huh.

• 1:21:51Bill Simmons?

  In the pre-cog outfit.

• 1:21:52Speaker 06

She's too, she's probably too on at this point.

• 1:21:55Chris Ryan?

I would, I would go for Halle Berry as Lara as the, as the ex-wife. That'd be cool. Future.

• 1:22:02Bill Simmons?

Half ass center research, Cameron Diaz, Cameron Crowe and Paul Thomas Anderson are on the subway uncredited.

• 1:22:09Bill Simmons?

In the Philip Dick novel, John Anterton is a balding, out of shape old man.

• 1:22:14Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:16Chris Ryan?

He also, at the end of, I think it will believe at the end of the novel, him and Lara get like basically kicked off of earth.

• 1:22:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:23Chris Ryan?

Kicked off of earth? Yeah, it's not a happy ending. What, where, hold on, where did he go? It's like you're basically being transported to like another planet, like as, as punishment and Whitwer is like, takes over essentially.

• 1:22:35Bill Simmons?

In the book, the, the precogs are intellectually disabled and deformed individuals. They decided that doesn't sound fun.

• 1:22:43Bill Simmons?

Spielberg said he wanted to give the movie a noir feel and threw himself a film festival that included Asphalt Jungle, Key Largo, Maltese Falcon, and they decided to deliberately overlight the film and then bleach pa- bypass the negative with our guy, Yanush.

• 1:23:00Chris Ryan?

The car factory scene is based on a never shot sequence in North by Northwest that Hitchcock told Francois Truffaut about. So like he took like the inspiration for that. I mean, he's just in, he's just fucking, he is hearing Jimmy in this movie. He's just.

• 1:23:17Bill Simmons?

Do you know my Yanush connection?

• 1:23:19Chris Ryan?

  I do not.

• 1:23:20Bill Simmons?

So my daughter's in like, Chris knows this, elementary school.

• 1:23:24Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:25Bill Simmons?

And he's one of the other dads in my daughter's class. In one year, it was like second or third grade, he took all the pictures at like the end of the year thing. And it was Yanush Kaminsky, multiple Oscar winner cinematography. So you know, you normally have these things and it's just like a bunch of like people taking iPhones and it's a photo album. And this is like fucking, you could release this as like a coffee table work, just pictures of like seven year old little girls like blowing bubbles in the air. It's like, it's just fucking amazing. Anyway. Uh, similars to The Fugitive.

• 1:24:01Bill Simmons?

Richard Kimball, John Anderton framed for crimes they didn't commit.

• 1:24:08Bill Simmons?

Both recognized on the subway by another passenger. Both consulted a colleague to unravel a clue. Both pursued by a police officer and navigate through a crowded public place to try to lose them. Kimball dyes his hair. Anderton has his eyes replaced. Discovered they were set up by a colleague that they had been talking about the whole time and trusted. And then blow them up during a ceremony celebrating that colleague.

• 1:24:38Chris Ryan?

You got neurinin, you got provasic. What are they taking in The Fugitive? What's the, what's the drug?

• 1:24:43Bill Simmons?

  Provacic.

• 1:24:44Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:45Speaker 06

You'll have to excuse my friend. Dr. Richard Kimball, he's been sick. Is there a scene in this one that's parallel or something like the jumping off of the

• 1:25:01Speaker 06

the jumping into the damn scene?

• 1:25:04Bill Simmons?

Probably the jetpack fight, right? Him jumping?

• 1:25:07Speaker 06

  Where he just goes.

• 1:25:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, that's another similarity.

• 1:25:10Speaker 06

Whatever you do, you're not gonna catch me. I'm willing to jump off of the thing or do whatever. Yeah.

• 1:25:17Bill Simmons?

This is a borderline Sean fantasy criteria orgasm, criterion orgasm award, whatever we called that one, but

• 1:25:23Chris Ryan?

  criteria orgasm.

• 1:25:24Bill Simmons?

Criteria orgasm. Cruz confronts Max at the end and he's wearing a dark hood. And it's mirrors the opening of a 1957 movie called The Seventh Seal.

• 1:25:34Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:25:36Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. So there you go.

• 1:25:39Bill Simmons?

  Apex Mountain.

• 1:25:41Chris Ryan?

  I got one for you.

• 1:25:43Bill Simmons?

  What do you got?

• 1:25:43Chris Ryan?

You ever heard of the made up genre called Nokia Wave or Nokia Wave, depending on how you pronounce the Swedish phone company? You know about this?

• 1:25:52Bill Simmons?

  I don't.

• 1:25:52Chris Ryan?

So it's basically an idea slash subgenre that was coined by a critic named David Rudnick. And it's loosely spans from GoldenEye.

• 1:26:03Chris Ryan?

Through the Bourne movies, so like ninety-five to like early two thousands.

• 1:26:07Bill Simmons?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:26:07Chris Ryan?

And it's all about like, it's like Enemy of the State. It's like Matrix. It's stuff where it's like the technology is futuristic, but it's still tactile. So you were talking about like the little floppy disks, but it was basically clear disks. People are still wearing earbuds, you know, like the phones are like almost there, but they're not super in the future. And everything is about paranoia and a state surveilling you. And basically this is like, it's this Ronin spy game, Mission Impossible. Budgets, but Minority Report is Apex Mountain for Nokia Wave.

• 1:26:40Bill Simmons?

Hmm. Do you think they would make me watch Cruise's?

• 1:26:44Chris Ryan?

  No, that was great.

• 1:26:45Bill Simmons?

  I.

• 1:26:47Speaker 06

  That's a great point.

• 1:26:48Bill Simmons?

On purpose that time. You know, that was great. No, you're right. This was a four-year, yeah, four-year run of inferior technology being presented as awesome technology.

• 1:26:58Chris Ryan?

Yes, where it's like, we can't find Jason Bourne because like the internet is busy, like the modem is not working.

• 1:27:04Speaker 06

  Almost like contemporary steampunk.

• 1:27:07Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:07Speaker 06

Like to where it's, you know what I mean?

• 1:27:10Bill Simmons?

That's a really good Apex Mountain.

• 1:27:11Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:27:12Bill Simmons?

  Cruise, no.

• 1:27:15Bill Simmons?

  Spielberg, no.

• 1:27:18Speaker 06

  Cruise Spielberg collapse?

• 1:27:21Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, cuz this is it.

• 1:27:22Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:22Bill Simmons?

World of the Worlds. No, this is better than.

• 1:27:24Speaker 06

I love War of the Worlds, though. I think it's a real, I think War of the.

• 1:27:30Chris Ryan?

  Tom Cruise.

• 1:27:31Speaker 06

  Throwing a, throwing a baseball.

• 1:27:32Chris Ryan?

You're just as bad as he's the Yankees fan in that movie.

• 1:27:34Speaker 06

Throwing a baseball at his son's face.

• 1:27:35Bill Simmons?

Um, he just has to come and come out and say, I had a torn rotator cuff, but I got it through it.

• 1:27:41Speaker 06

  Um.

• 1:27:41Bill Simmons?

Cuz I threw the baseball for seven straight months before filming cuz I wanted to get it right.

• 1:27:45Speaker 06

  Spielbergian.

• 1:27:46Bill Simmons?

  Shattered my rotator cuff.

• 1:27:48Speaker 06

See, Spielbergian techno in the war, like between this and AI.

• 1:27:52Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's good. I like this movie so much more than AI. I really didn't feel like AI worked. Not a lot of AI conversations lately, although I guess the title is.

• 1:28:01Speaker 06

  Important movie, though.

• 1:28:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I get it. How about evil Max characters? Because this wasn't the most evil. CR knows what the most evil is.

• 1:28:08Chris Ryan?

  Strange brew?

• 1:28:09Bill Simmons?

  Hmm, no.

• 1:28:11Bill Simmons?

He was, he was the, the good Nazi in Victory. Oh, right. Yeah. The Nazis were all evil in Victory. But Pele's bicycle kick was so good, he stood up and applauded it. Yeah. But you know what? You're still fucking Nazi.

• 1:28:25Speaker 06

  You're a Nazi, yeah.

• 1:28:26Bill Simmons?

Sorry, sorry buddy. Samantha Morton, Apex Mountain? It's her time, Marv and Call or this. Yeah, I actually think the answer is. Dorchester's Neil McDonough, no way.

• 1:28:37Speaker 06

  No, hell no.

• 1:28:38Bill Simmons?

No, his, his, his Apex Mountains, the 25 year Apex Mountain.

• 1:28:41Speaker 06

  He got a deep bag.

• 1:28:44Speaker 06

25 year, he got a deep bag. He got a deep bag of recognizable characters.

• 1:28:48Bill Simmons?

Yeah. When they, first year Yellowstone, I'm like, Neil's gonna be in this. And then second year he is.

• 1:28:55Speaker 06

  He's in there, yeah.

• 1:28:57Bill Simmons?

Pre-cogs, definitely. Washington DC movies, no. Pre-crime departments? I don't remember seeing this in another movie.

• 1:29:06Bill Simmons?

  Predictive crime, yeah.

• 1:29:08Speaker 06

  Yeah, I don't think so.

• 1:29:08Bill Simmons?

Phil Dick movies? We just said no?

• 1:29:10Speaker 06

  We just said no.

• 1:29:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah, alright. Cruise or Hank, Scorsese or Spielberg? This is the first time this has ever happened? It's a double wow. Yeah.

• 1:29:21Bill Simmons?

What role would Philip Seymour Hoffman have played?

• 1:29:25Speaker 06

You know, I have him in the Colin Farrell role.

• 1:29:29Bill Simmons?

It's an interesting idea of him playing Whitworth, because it's a little bit more of a torp, a little less hot, a little less like... The fight scene suffers, probably.

• 1:29:36Speaker 06

The fight scene suffers, maybe the running and all of that, kinda, he wasn't known for, but like, he also was kinda sneaky athletic and people don't talk about it, like, he was a good ball player and all of that stuff.

• 1:29:48Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:48Speaker 06

He never really got into that bag on screen, I guess, that much.

• 1:29:51Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he could have been the eye doctor. Oh, for sure.

• 1:29:54Speaker 06

Yeah, he could have been an eye doctor.

• 1:29:55Bill Simmons?

He could have been Gideon. But I, I think he's the Dweezil Zappa if we're doing this again. He just comes in hot for five minutes.

• 1:30:01Speaker 06

  But in 2002?

• 1:30:02Bill Simmons?

Yeah, he's just like doing a favor for Cruise, they're buddies.

• 1:30:07Bill Simmons?

Craig's Choice Flex Category. What do you got Craig?

• 1:30:10Speaker 07

Well, I kinda wanna do a hottest take, which is just that Lamar was super right in that we should get the precogs back in the milk. And that even if it's like a 98% hit rate, what are we doing here?

• 1:30:21Speaker 06

See, this is the problem with this generation. See, I'm telling you.

• 1:30:25Chris Ryan?

He's just like, I wanna take Waymo. I want a world without murder, even if innocent people are going to jail.

• 1:30:32Speaker 07

Spoiler alert, innocent people go to jail all the time.

• 1:30:37Speaker 06

He means it. This is the problem. This is an intellectual.

• 1:30:41Speaker 07

What's our hit rate now? Like 60%? I can tell you I can get 98%?

• 1:30:44Chris Ryan?

  Guys are clear about 20%.

• 1:30:46Speaker 07

Yeah, I'm just running the numbers here. This still looks like a pretty good move to me.

• 1:30:50Speaker 06

  See?

• 1:30:50Speaker 07

  Okay.

• 1:30:51Bill Simmons?

This would be an unbelievable first take segment.

• 1:30:54Speaker 07

Think about what you're gonna say, Craig.

• 1:30:55Speaker 06

We have to get the precogs back in the water, in the milk. An ethically utilitarian generation. Like, I'm telling you.

• 1:31:05Bill Simmons?

Craig, I really enjoyed the take. Pick a Knits.

• 1:31:10Bill Simmons?

Swapping eyeballs. Let's like really talk about this. I know the technology is gonna be better in 2054 than it is now. I don't know what century we're just gonna be able to swap eyeballs where the guys out there in an action scene three weeks later. Come on.

• 1:31:25Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:31:26Bill Simmons?

  Like, come on.

• 1:31:27Speaker 06

  I mean, yeah, means you.

• 1:31:28Bill Simmons?

Like kidneys, I would, I get it, but that one is, uh, that one's a little crazy.

• 1:31:36Bill Simmons?

Cruz just stumbles into the exact drowning of Anne Lively in about 20 seconds from the precog thing.

• 1:31:44Chris Ryan?

I think it's the idea that the precogs are echoing that, like they're trying to send a signal to her. Cause that's her mother.

• 1:31:50Speaker 06

  She keeps saying.

• 1:31:51Bill Simmons?

  I know.

• 1:31:53Speaker 06

She says to him, you can see. She wants him to see.

• 1:31:56Bill Simmons?

And then Lamar accidentally saying the girl drowned.

• 1:31:59Chris Ryan?

I'll add on to the Lamar pylon. I don't really feel like Lamar shooting himself in the heart is like commensurate to the rest of the film's like imagination. So when like, it's just the two of them together and then he's like, like, come on, you guys had a jetpack fight an hour ago.

• 1:32:16Speaker 06

I have two. Yeah. Who's in charge of updating the retinal files?

• 1:32:21Chris Ryan?

  What do you mean?

• 1:32:23Speaker 06

So Tom Cruise, his character, John Anderton, is now a fugitive and on the run and an outlaw. But his retinal still gets you into the police station. Oh, who's like, why didn't they turn off his security badge? Like, you leave a place, like, you fire, you get fired from a place, they discontinue your badge, like, right away. Yeah.

• 1:32:47Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:48Speaker 06

But all the way to the end of the movie. He can still get into the Justice Department. Able to get in using his retinal file. Like, he's, who's, who's in charge of- That's the fucking one of the best picking nits I've heard in a long time. Who's in charge of updating the retinal files? It should not still be giving you access. Yeah. Cut your card off right away, you can't get back in.

• 1:33:07Bill Simmons?

This is 2000, 2025, we would know this. 2002, they didn't think of it.

• 1:33:12Speaker 06

I'm just saying, like, they, they get you out of it, and then the other one is-

• 1:33:15Bill Simmons?

  Retinal files.

• 1:33:16Speaker 06

The other one is this. So, in the crime with the, the precog, the and widely, the, the crime, right? They come and get her murderer, and then they just leave her there. For her to be killed. So they don't need her to come to the station and give a statement. They, okay. Right. I think the idea is it's all staged, right? But I know what you mean, where the cops are like, you're good, see you later. Yeah, the cops come get the guy, and then that allows Burgess to then kill her while the cops are going. There's not a cop that goes, hey, I know this was traumatic for you. They literally just leave her standing by the lake for him to come kill her. Well, in Craigslist America, that's just how the cops are.

• 1:33:58Bill Simmons?

Keep the precogs in milk. I'm Craig Horlbeck, and that's my 2054 stance.

• 1:34:06Speaker 07

Wait, I have a picking nit.

• 1:34:07Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:34:08Speaker 07

You'll have to talk me through this, because maybe I'm not thinking about this right. But the, the whole John Anderton murder, the whole plot seems like a catch 22 to me, because Anderton would not have known about the Leo Crow thing unless Agatha told him, or, or, you know, saw it. But Agatha would have never seen it. Unless he was already destined to do it, which he couldn't have been because she's the reason why he was destined to do it.

• 1:34:32Chris Ryan?

Craig, welcome to the world of dick, man. This is what it's all about.

• 1:34:35Speaker 07

It's like a chicken or the egg.

• 1:34:37Chris Ryan?

  But that's, that's the paradox.

• 1:34:38Bill Simmons?

  What'd you just say?

• 1:34:38Chris Ryan?

The whole idea, welcome to the world of dick. You know, it's like all of this, it's like basically the whole idea.

• 1:34:44Speaker 07

Get some dick, Craig, yeah. I just got dicked.

• 1:34:47Chris Ryan?

Uh, when he's like, it's when Colin Farrell's character is just like, if we, it's like, here's the paradox is like, if you know the ball is going to drop, you catch it, whatever. That whole idea.

• 1:34:57Speaker 07

But like, the, the opening example in the film makes sense. It's like this guy's go, you know, theoretically going to kill his wife, but he still has a choice, but the, the Anderton thing doesn't make sense because he literally would have never known about it had Agatha not told him.

• 1:35:09Chris Ryan?

But that's the whole thing is she's trying to knock down the dominoes that will eventually lead to like her mother's murder being solved.

• 1:35:17Bill Simmons?

It's like Craig, it's like if Sacramento just takes Luka Doncic, number two.

• 1:35:22Chris Ryan?

Then we don't even, then Nico Harrison is just having a great year.

• 1:35:26Bill Simmons?

Nico Harrison is just the boys with everybody and the Lakers are dying.

• 1:35:30Chris Ryan?

I would say, Craig, this was a, a source story written under a tremendous influence of drugs.

• 1:35:35Speaker 07

  Sure.

• 1:35:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:37Bill Simmons?

Sequel, prequel, prestige TV, all black cast are untouchable. Uh, prestige TV probably should have worked with this. It feels like a show Apple would have made, like yesterday.

• 1:35:47Chris Ryan?

It would just be more heady and less like fun and, and chase oriented.

• 1:35:51Bill Simmons?

Probably less toys because they wouldn't have the budget. Although if they gave prestige, uh, the, the prestige, like morning show treatment money to this, Apple, 20 million an episode.

• 1:36:03Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it would just be like an advertisement for everything Apple's going to do in 10 years.

• 1:36:07Bill Simmons?

Right. He's walking through the mall and it's just like iPad.

• 1:36:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:10Speaker 06

I guess the question is like, when you do the prestige on this, do you do a one season limited that kind of stretches out Anderton's story? Or do you leave pre-crime around?

• 1:36:22Speaker 06

And do something based on that for like multiple seasons.

• 1:36:24Chris Ryan?

Or would you do a prequel and it's like the first guy who gets caught by precogs?

• 1:36:28Speaker 06

  Right.

• 1:36:28Chris Ryan?

Cause that guy probably was pretty salty.

• 1:36:29Speaker 06

Or you do, or you do all the minority reports.

• 1:36:32Bill Simmons?

What about Law and Order Pre-Crime?

• 1:36:34Chris Ryan?

  Oh shit.

• 1:36:35Bill Simmons?

Just like the cheap version of this.

• 1:36:36Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:37Speaker 06

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:36:37Bill Simmons?

  Just every episode.

• 1:36:38Chris Ryan?

Not a lot of detective work. It's like, oh yeah, see, we gotta just get this guy.

• 1:36:41Speaker 06

It's basically just moving your hands around.

• 1:36:44Bill Simmons?

Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Danny Tre outdoors, Burke, Sam Jackson, no, Byron Mayo, Barney Cousins, Tony Romo, Harley Mays, Chris Collinsworth, Daniel Plainview, long legs, or Wilford Brimley in the firm?

• 1:36:54Chris Ryan?

In honor of the NBA playoffs, if DB was checking out a little minority report, we see you, Miss Agatha. You've been swimming in the photon milk for all this time, not just grinding tape, but making the tape for the pre-crime police to act on. But now you're out here in your Gap finest, straight off the rack, living your best life. Don't let anyone tell you that you need the twins to see the future.

• 1:37:24Chris Ryan?

DB has really kind of taken on her own character now. It's not even really like a Doris Burke imitation anymore.

• 1:37:29Bill Simmons?

I don't know. We'll see during the playoffs. I don't know if that's far off. I had, uh, I had Ryan Ruko and also in honor of the NBA playoffs. Is Lamar Burgess gonna take his life?

• 1:37:46Bill Simmons?

Just want to ask her who gets it. I'd honestly go Kaminsky. I think this movie looks so cool.

• 1:37:51Chris Ryan?

  Yeah, it is.

• 1:37:52Bill Simmons?

Yeah. I think the way it's, it just, the vibe of it is so unique. It really stands out. Even if you're flicking channels on cable and you stumble across it, it just looks different.

• 1:38:02Chris Ryan?

I like the idea though, that this is like hardly in the conversation of Spielberg movie that missed out on an Oscar or should have, but should have won an Oscar, but people still study it.

• 1:38:13Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:14Chris Ryan?

Do you know what I mean? It's a real testament.

• 1:38:15Bill Simmons?

No question. Probably an answerable questions. Did Howard Marks's wife deserve to die?

• 1:38:22Bill Simmons?

I mean, the fucking guy wasn't even in his car yet and the next guy's coming over. I don't know.

• 1:38:26Chris Ryan?

  That guy's

• 1:38:27Bill Simmons?

Did Howard have some good ideas?

• 1:38:28Chris Ryan?

Stalking the house too, from across the street. He's just like, you can't even, you can't even wait for five minutes?

• 1:38:34Bill Simmons?

Creep affair guy, I don't know.

• 1:38:36Speaker 06

You need to go listen to the TK Kirkland interview on Higher Learning. Let, let, let, let me, let me tell you something, um.

• 1:38:42Bill Simmons?

  I said it was unanswerable.

• 1:38:43Speaker 06

I will tell you this, it, no, but the answer is no. But I will say that that scene is really, that scene is diabolical because he's trying to convince her to have sex in the bed.

• 1:38:55Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:55Speaker 06

And she's like not wanting to do it.

• 1:38:58Bill Simmons?

  She's saving it.

• 1:38:59Speaker 06

But yeah, but she's like, I don't want to do it in our bed in the bed that we share. Even though the guy's already coming in the house, he's like, nah, nah, fuck your husband, fuck your husband. And then he's right there with the fucking scissors. But no, she didn't deserve to die, no.

• 1:39:12Bill Simmons?

Has any actor ever worn ma- more masks in a movie than Tom Cruise?

• 1:39:17Chris Ryan?

Oh my God, I forgot about the, the paralytic that he shoots into his face.

• 1:39:20Speaker 06

We didn't even talk about that.

• 1:39:21Chris Ryan?

  Yeah. He loves a mask.

• 1:39:24Bill Simmons?

Loves it. I mean, how many, every Mission Impossible movie.

• 1:39:27Speaker 06

  Vanilla Sky.

• 1:39:28Bill Simmons?

Vanilla Sky, this movie. It's gotta be like two more.

• 1:39:32Chris Ryan?

Is he wearing a mask in Tropic Thunder? It's just a lot of makeup, you know?

• 1:39:35Speaker 06

  Oh, that's a good question.

• 1:39:36Chris Ryan?

  Approve for live.

• 1:39:38Speaker 06

Uh, maybe, maybe a prosthetics, maybe not a full mask, yeah.

• 1:39:41Speaker 07

I love that he injects himself with that and then like 20 seconds later, the pre-cut guy's like, hey, John.

• 1:39:47Chris Ryan?

It's also such like a huge.

• 1:39:48Speaker 07

Like, why did he do that?

• 1:39:49Chris Ryan?

Where they're like, here's what you're gonna do, you're gonna shoot yourself this and it's like, this is not like actually that important.

• 1:39:53Speaker 07

  No.

• 1:39:55Bill Simmons?

I have two really good ones, so unless anyone has any other ones.

• 1:39:58Speaker 06

  I don't.

• 1:39:59Bill Simmons?

All right, first one. What's the FanDuel line on the crane fight with Farrell and Cruise? Right when, right when Farrell does his Irish thing and it's like, it's go time? If that's real life on the crane, who wins?

• 1:40:13Chris Ryan?

  Well, I think it's like.

• 1:40:14Bill Simmons?

I'm going with the Irish guy.

• 1:40:15Chris Ryan?

But it is kinda like Amen Thompson's first playoff series. We don't really, we won't really see, we haven't seen Whitworth in that kind of situation.

• 1:40:21Bill Simmons?

He's like minus three 10 over Cruise. He's got size on him, he's younger.

• 1:40:25Speaker 06

And when he kisses the necklace, that tells me he's been there before.

• 1:40:29Bill Simmons?

Yeah, yeah, like he's had some scraps.

• 1:40:31Speaker 06

And by the way, he starts off fucking him up.

• 1:40:35Bill Simmons?

  So three to one?

• 1:40:36Speaker 06

  Three to one.

• 1:40:39Bill Simmons?

Three to one is a lot. So you think there'd be some cruise action? A little cruise action coming in late. Plus two forty? Yeah. Uh, next one. Has Van ever typed in precog in a porn cert?

• 1:40:52Bill Simmons?

This might actually be answerable. Cog? Uh, no, I haven't. Okay, good. Uh, what piece of memorability would you want or not want from this movie?

• 1:41:01Chris Ryan?

I would want the, the pre-crime screen, but only so that I could watch Second Spectrum and grind tape.

• 1:41:09Speaker 07

Look at this split action. Draymond's gonna get set here.

• 1:41:14Bill Simmons?

I have the rarely seen not want for this.

• 1:41:17Chris Ryan?

  Okay.

• 1:41:17Bill Simmons?

The eyeballs. Oh, yeah. Imagine having those. Like, what are those? I have the eyeballs for minority part.

• 1:41:23Chris Ryan?

  Get into Spotify.

• 1:41:27Bill Simmons?

The halo. I want the halo.

• 1:41:28Chris Ryan?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:41:29Bill Simmons?

The halos are cool. Coach Finstak award, best life lesson?

• 1:41:35Bill Simmons?

I'm gonna go with careful chief. You dig up the past, all you get is dirty.

• 1:41:42Bill Simmons?

I don't know, some sort of life lesson. Okay.

• 1:41:44Chris Ryan?

I like, uh, I like everybody runs.

• 1:41:46Bill Simmons?

Yeah, everybody runs. That's good. Best double feature choice? I had Edge of Tomorrow.

• 1:41:53Chris Ryan?

That's good. I had North by Northwest.

• 1:41:55Bill Simmons?

Hmm. Oh, I was gonna say War on the World, War of the Worlds, just to get the combo. Yeah. Who won the movie? Steve?

• 1:42:02Chris Ryan?

  I'm gonna go Steve.

• 1:42:03Bill Simmons?

  I'm gonna go Steve too.

• 1:42:06Chris Ryan?

  Steven Tom? Unanimous.

• 1:42:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah. Craig's precog milkshake?

• 1:42:10Chris Ryan?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:13Bill Simmons?

  Craig, what do you got?

• 1:42:15Speaker 07

So I feel like I've effectively masked my thoughts throughout this recording. Um, you're probably not gonna be thrilled.

• 1:42:22Bill Simmons?

  He didn't like it.

• 1:42:22Speaker 07

I have seen this movie before. I saw it 10 years ago. This is only the second time I've seen it. And I don't deny that this is exactly what Spielberg wanted. It just... It just doesn't click for me. It doesn't work.

• 1:42:33Bill Simmons?

Not a sci fi guy or not a?

• 1:42:35Speaker 07

  I like sci fi.

• 1:42:36Bill Simmons?

  Not a pre crime guy?

• 1:42:37Chris Ryan?

Can I, can I ask you something?

• 1:42:38Speaker 07

  Uh huh.

• 1:42:39Chris Ryan?

We didn't talk about this. Is it a half hour too long?

• 1:42:42Speaker 07

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:42:43Chris Ryan?

Cause I know that you're, you're really sensitive about runtimes anyway. And this, this one definitely has like five extras.

• 1:42:50Bill Simmons?

  It drags in that middle.

• 1:42:51Speaker 07

Ahead of its time and how long it is, to be honest.

• 1:42:53Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:53Speaker 07

  I feel like these movies.

• 1:42:54Chris Ryan?

A two and a half hour blockbuster was uncommon back then.

• 1:42:56Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I just knew sinners. I love sinners, but I knew like I had to pee halfway.

• 1:43:00Speaker 07

  Right.

• 1:43:00Bill Simmons?

At the hour mark. Cause I was like, I know this is gonna go an hour, an hour and a half longer.

• 1:43:04Speaker 07

I think this is just like my own personal subjective opinion. I just don't like the look of the early aughts, late nineties movies. That like cold, blue, bleached out. I just like find that to be visually unpleasant. And I think it's in a weird middle ground. Like I think it's in a gray area where eighties and nineties movies to me actually aged better than early aughts movies. Because the early aughts movies are like in that awkward period between bad CGI and good CGI. And they're like really trying.

• 1:43:29Speaker 06

  I could not agree more.

• 1:43:31Speaker 07

They have, they like, they're like, are just discovering it. So they're trying really hard. And I actually think it just looks worse than like Total Recall in some ways.

• 1:43:38Speaker 06

Bad, bad, like bad CGI, like bad CGI or effects puts you in a position where you understand exactly what they're imagining.

• 1:43:49Speaker 07

  Mm hmm.

• 1:43:50Speaker 06

Middling CGI and effects makes it look like they couldn't do what they wanted to do.

• 1:43:55Speaker 07

Yeah. I think this movie is either 10 years too early or 10 years too late.

• 1:43:59Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:43:59Bill Simmons?

Cause you know what's funny though? I, so I, I totally agree with Craig, but I also judge this. Cause I know what they had and didn't have back then. Almost the same way you would watch NBA clips from the seventies and be like, oh yeah, they didn't know to shoot threes back then.

• 1:44:13Speaker 06

But see, that's what he's saying.

• 1:44:15Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:44:15Speaker 06

In my opinion, um, I'm not to speak for him because he just said it, but like, if you watch, if you watch Total Recall and you know, the things happening and, and he's in the stomach and all of that.

• 1:44:25Bill Simmons?

  It's campy.

• 1:44:26Speaker 06

Right. You get that. But then when you watch a movie from like 2002 or 2003, there are parts of the movie that look amazing. And then parts that look bad. And that to me takes you more out of it than something that looks bad pretty much throughout the entire way.

• 1:44:42Bill Simmons?

I was watching, uh, I don't know if you guys know this movie, The Thing last night.

• 1:44:46Chris Ryan?

  John Carpenter movie?

• 1:44:47Bill Simmons?

Literally last night. You might've heard of it.

• 1:44:49Chris Ryan?

Did you? Get it on 4K?

• 1:44:51Bill Simmons?

  Uh huh.

• 1:44:51Chris Ryan?

  Did you get it on?

• 1:44:52Bill Simmons?

No, it was just on cable. I do have it on 4K though.

• 1:44:54Speaker 07

See, to me, that's a good example of a movie that visually works despite how dated it looks.

• 1:44:58Bill Simmons?

But that's the thing. It's 1982. All of it feels completely genuine, even the alien, whatever the fuck coming out of the guy's stomach. And in 2002, they probably tried to throw some technology at that that would make it seem less fake than it did in 1982.

• 1:45:13Chris Ryan?

  Yes.

• 1:45:14Speaker 07

It's just tough timing. I almost wish this was a Total Recall sequel in like 1991 because it would have looked way different.

• 1:45:20Speaker 06

But there are parts of the movie that look fantastic, like all of the, all of the stuff moving around, the pre-cog stuff. All of that stuff totally works and then you'll get to something and you'll go, they hadn't quite mastered, because they're probably producing this 2000, 2001.

• 1:45:35Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:45:36Speaker 06

Something like that. They hadn't quite.

• 1:45:37Chris Ryan?

He shot it pretty fast, but yeah, like it's, it's, it's, I think it's after, I mean, they certainly were doing it after 9/11, but I, I think it was a quick shoot.

• 1:45:44Speaker 07

Yeah, I just don't love the early internet era, like the, the early digital era on film, I feel like is kind of tough, doesn't age well.

• 1:45:50Bill Simmons?

Craig, have you seen The Thing?

• 1:45:52Speaker 07

  Yeah.

• 1:45:52Bill Simmons?

  Jack, have you seen it?

• 1:45:54Speaker 09

I have. Huge inspiration for Sinners.

• 1:45:59Bill Simmons?

  It's really good.

• 1:46:01Speaker 07

  The Thing or Sinners?

• 1:46:02Chris Ryan?

You showed a little, you showed a little leg. Are we gonna do it?

• 1:46:04Bill Simmons?

The Thing is just really good.

• 1:46:06Chris Ryan?

Yeah, it is. It's, it's just. It's one of the best movies.

• 1:46:09Bill Simmons?

The testing the blood is just one of the most riveting scenes, but Sinners has a lot of Thing energy in there.

• 1:46:15Speaker 06

  Carl, Garlic.

• 1:46:17Bill Simmons?

Do you think that was an inspiration for Sinners?

• 1:46:19Speaker 06

Probably. I mean, he would not, like, it just, it's, it's a whole thing. Jack, you can get to it. I haven't heard anybody say it, but maybe, I guess Jack has.

• 1:46:27Speaker 09

No, Ryan Coogler has spoken about The Thing was one of the biggest inspirations for the film.

• 1:46:31Chris Ryan?

I saw a video recently of Kurt Russell and Keith David, like, meeting up again for the first time in like 20 something years. And I was like, this is like, I'm about to start crying. Like, this is really important.

• 1:46:42Speaker 06

  It was at Carpenter's.

• 1:46:43Chris Ryan?

And you're like, oh my god, brother, what's up? It's like, holy shit.

• 1:46:47Speaker 06

Still not my favorite Carpenter, though.

• 1:46:49Bill Simmons?

  Wow.

• 1:46:50Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:46:50Bill Simmons?

I mean, Halloween, for god's sakes.

• 1:46:52Speaker 06

  Nah.

• 1:46:52Chris Ryan?

  Big Trouble in Little China?

• 1:46:54Bill Simmons?

That is a very good movie.

• 1:46:55Speaker 06

  Love that movie.

• 1:46:57Speaker 07

  You going They Live?

• 1:46:58Speaker 06

They Live. They Live is, They Live is still the, it's a haunting, riveting, hyper masculine masterpiece. Love that movie. Love it. I also like Vampires, which is a movie that nobody likes.

• 1:47:14Chris Ryan?

  I like Vampires.

• 1:47:15Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:47:16Bill Simmons?

Thanks to Craig, thanks to Jack, thanks to LaCra Koozie.

• 1:47:22Bill Simmons?

Thanks to CR and Ben. Great to see you guys as always. Don't forget, you can watch this on the Ringer Movies YouTube channel or as a video podcast on Spotify. Or beamed right into your retina. Yeah. See you next time.
