This episode of Smartless is sponsored by Google Book. So the other day, I wanted to make invitations for my dog Ricky's birthday party. And I've got three things open on my laptop. An adorable photo of Ricky, a picture of a birthday cake, and the RSVP details. Thing is, as much as I look like one, I'm not a canine birthday party invitation designer. That's where Google Book comes in. It's a whole new kind of laptop with a feature called Magic Pointer. I just click the photos and different elements on my screen, and boom, Magic Pointer designs a customized birthday party invitation for Ricky. We are.

• 2:58Jason Bateman?

  I mean...

• 2:59Will Arnett?

You were shot out of a cannon.

• 3:00Jason Bateman?

I was shot out of a cannon. I'm all fired up. We get to do some podding today.

• 3:06Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 3:07Jason Bateman?

• 3:24Jason Bateman?

And they should respond in a somewhat informative way.

• 3:27Will Arnett?

Nobody's left. Nobody's gonna listen now.

• 3:29Jason Bateman?

You think they've turned the dial? Well then, let's hurry up and get the guest out here. Come on. Welcome to Smartless.

• 3:56Jason Bateman?

  What is that from?

• 3:57Will Arnett?

  Well... Hi.

• 3:59Jason Bateman?

  Hi. That's like a...

• 4:02Will Arnett?

  It's all new Smartless.

• 4:05Jason Bateman?

  Jesus Christ.

• 4:06Sean Hayes?

Isn't that a... Isn't that... Don't they use that in sports things?

• 4:11Jason Bateman?

  Uh, yeah.

• 4:12Will Arnett?

  Hey, Sean?

• 4:13Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 4:14Will Arnett?

Are you doing an ad for All American Guy? You just took a big gulp of milk and now you took a bite of an apple.

• 4:20Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, I just got back...

• 4:22Will Arnett?

What happened? You ran out of Pop-Tarts?

• 4:26Jason Bateman?

Oh my god. Dude, hit the horn again. There you go. Yeah. Hey, did Archie give you that app or something? Is that next to the fart one?

• 4:36Will Arnett?

No, man, I've had it for a long time, embarrassingly enough.

• 4:40Sean Hayes?

Did I tell you, somebody gave me a box of Pop-Tarts outside the stage door.

• 4:45Will Arnett?

  Did they really?

• 4:46Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it was the greatest gift.

• 4:47Jason Bateman?

  What a crowd.

• 4:48Sean Hayes?

  There was.

• 4:51Sean Hayes?

There was a bow around it. There was a bow. And I thought that was the nicest gift ever. And.

• 4:57Jason Bateman?

  Did security tackle them?

• 4:59Sean Hayes?

No, remember when we went on tour and that somebody handed me a sandwich and I ate it? And Jason was like.

• 5:06Jason Bateman?

  I kinda do.

• 5:06Sean Hayes?

Remember that, we got in the car. You're like, why would you ever eat a sandwich from somebody off the street?

• 5:12Will Arnett?

You're trying to get me to remember the time that you ate a sandwich?

• 5:17Sean Hayes?

  No.

• 5:19Will Arnett?

  No?

• 5:20Sean Hayes?

  No.

• 5:20Will Arnett?

I just kinda heighten it if it's not, if it's dragged across the finish line.

• 5:24Jason Bateman?

  Needs a little punch.

• 5:25Will Arnett?

I know. By the way, it should be noted.

• 5:30Will Arnett?

I texted JB, I'm gonna embarrass him. The Boys and I, Artie and I, watched that first episode of DTSA Lewis. He's so good.

• 5:39Jason Bateman?

  Wait, listen, listen to this.

• 5:40Will Arnett?

Jason, you're so good at playing a simp. Go ahead, Sean.

• 5:44Sean Hayes?

  I mean, I.

• 5:47Sean Hayes?

I almost, Jay, it's like one of those incredible, powerful performances.

• 5:52Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 5:53Sean Hayes?

That I felt like when I saw Willie do his movie too, where I'm looking at you right now, I've known you for 75,000 years, and I don't, I don't know who you are. Like, it was so unbelievably a different person that I did not believe I was watching you.

• 6:10Jason Bateman?

Sean, he finished it last night.

• 6:12Sean Hayes?

I finished the whole series, yeah, last night.

• 6:14Will Arnett?

How do you have all this, how do you have them all?

• 6:15Jason Bateman?

  I gave him mine.

• 6:16Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 6:17Will Arnett?

We finished the first episode and I turned to the boys and I literally looked at them, I go, how many episodes away are we from Jason getting pegged?

• 6:32Sean Hayes?

  Jay, I mean-

• 6:33Jason Bateman?

  Pretty close.

• 6:34Sean Hayes?

I could go on and on.

• 6:36Will Arnett?

  I know, it's so good.

• 6:37Sean Hayes?

I was in tears at the end because I was so proud of my friend Jason.

• 6:42Will Arnett?

It's really, really good. Everybody's great. Lynda Cardellini is amazing. David Harbour, really great.

• 6:47Sean Hayes?

  David Harbour's great, everybody's great.

• 6:49Will Arnett?

I'm not comparing anybody, but Jason, you are so good in this part, honestly.

• 6:53Jason Bateman?

  I really appreciate it.

• 6:54Sean Hayes?

And it's so, I mean, what, were you-

• 6:56Will Arnett?

And it's not surprising. It should be noted too, because you know when people go, "You were really good."

• 7:02Jason Bateman?

  It always hurts.

• 7:03Sean Hayes?

But I texted Jason yesterday, last night, about like, what a huge swing it was to, to do this. I mean, Will, wait until you see-

• 7:13Will Arnett?

I don't say it in another word. I don't, because I knew a new one came out last night and I couldn't watch last night, so.

• 7:18Sean Hayes?

  I mean, it just gets-

• 7:19Jason Bateman?

But it's this guy Steve Conrad, this writer-director, we'll leave the subject, sorry listener. But this guy Steve Conrad, this writer-director, he's just so-

• 7:28Sean Hayes?

  Incredible.

• 7:29Jason Bateman?

  And like, daring and-

• 7:31Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, daring.

• 7:31Jason Bateman?

But like, without being obnoxiously like, "Oh, look how avant-garde and, and, you know, it's just like, it's so-

• 7:38Sean Hayes?

It serves the characters and it serves the story.

• 7:40Jason Bateman?

It's so relatable that it makes it absolutely almost impossible to watch, because it's so cringey and real and awkward.

• 7:48Sean Hayes?

And so much so, I woke up today, I started doing just regular whatever tasks, thinking about DTF St. Louis and these characters, and I'm like-

• 7:55Jason Bateman?

Were you sitting on Scotty's face?

• 7:58Will Arnett?

  Those were his regular tasks.

• 8:01Sean Hayes?

  Wait at your teeth.

• 8:05Sean Hayes?

  Wait a minute.

• 8:05Jason Bateman?

The viewers will understand what I'm talking about.

• 8:07Sean Hayes?

Yeah, yeah, that's a little precursor to what happens. But anyways.

• 8:12Jason Bateman?

You're very nice, thank you, man. Willie, it's nice to have you back in the States. You made it. Was there any issues at the border, or was it, was it pretty smooth?

• 8:20Will Arnett?

  Still good.

• 8:21Jason Bateman?

  Still good?

• 8:22Will Arnett?

  Still good, yeah.

• 8:23Jason Bateman?

  Okay.

• 8:23Will Arnett?

Yeah, so I'm in good, I'm in good standing.

• 8:26Jason Bateman?

Your bronzer's still, you haven't run out of that?

• 8:29Will Arnett?

No, it's good, it's a little streaky behind me that I can't get behind, I can't see. And my feet, obviously my feet are always a mess when I get sprayed this much.

• 8:39Sean Hayes?

I used to go to that thing all the time. Did you used to go to those things?

• 8:42Jason Bateman?

  Remember that?

• 8:43Sean Hayes?

  Go into boxes?

• 8:44Will Arnett?

I've never done it. No, I've literally never done it.

• 8:46Jason Bateman?

Do you remember that episode of Arrested Development when David Cross had to, uh, blow himself or blew it? He says, "I just blew myself." He had to put on his own Blue Man makeup.

• 8:54Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 8:57Jason Bateman?

I just read this morning, David's got a brand new comedy special, uh, his ninth one, uh, is self-releasing on his, on his website and on YouTube. I forget the date, but it's probably on now.

• 9:07Will Arnett?

Love David Cross. Go see it.

• 9:08Sean Hayes?

  Oh, that's exciting.

• 9:09Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, click it. Click it.

• 9:11Sean Hayes?

  Click it and forget.

• 9:11Will Arnett?

  I love Dee. Dee Cross.

• 9:13Sean Hayes?

Wait, one time really quick. I went, I went into this.

• 9:15Will Arnett?

DC, remember, remember he used to, sorry, just, uh, when DC, especially first year, we'd do something and David'd go like, "That's so lame." Like, we, we discussed, Jason and I would describe something we did and go, "That's pretty lame." And we'd go, we'd go, "Oh, sorry, street cred."

• 9:30Jason Bateman?

  Oh, yeah.

• 9:31Will Arnett?

And we started calling him Street Cred, which, which he actually ended up liking and made him laugh.

• 9:37Sean Hayes?

  Hey, Street Cred coming up?

• 9:38Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 9:39Sean Hayes?

  Anyway.

• 9:40Will Arnett?

  God, I love him.

• 9:41Sean Hayes?

  Shall we?

• 9:41Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I thought you were gonna say something, Shawnee. We'll come along.

• 9:44Sean Hayes?

No, that's too, that subject went too far away. It's about this tanning thing.

• 9:47Will Arnett?

  Bring it back.

• 9:47Sean Hayes?

Because I used to, um, I, I was so white, when I would have to have an event to go to or something, my makeup lady from Will and Grace, she would come over and cake on tanning stuff on my face, but she forgot to do my-

• 9:58Will Arnett?

  Was it Patty?

• 10:00Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, Patty Bunch, yeah.

• 10:01Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 10:01Sean Hayes?

Yeah, she's the best. And she forgot to do my hands.

• 10:04Jason Bateman?

  Oh, boy.

• 10:05Sean Hayes?

So, and I won a SAG Award. And so, you know, you do the line, the, the photos? "I'm holding up the SAG Award and my hands are as white as snow and my face is as orange as the sun."

• 10:17Jason Bateman?

That's up there with, uh, with, um, sometimes in the, uh, in, in a particularly unemployed summer, I will play a bunch of golf and, and the tan difference.

• 10:27Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 10:27Jason Bateman?

I see it now, the, between the glove hand and the non-glove hand.

• 10:30Sean Hayes?

  Oh, yeah.

• 10:31Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 10:32Sean Hayes?

  That's funny.

• 10:32Jason Bateman?

It's very, uh, ugly. Um, all right, great. Super hashtag relatable.

• 10:38Will Arnett?

Yeah, first world problems, uh, extreme. Uh, we just lost 50,000 listeners.

• 10:44Jason Bateman?

Today, we have one of my favorite actors. She always has been. I've had the great fortune of working with her a couple of times, and it is as good in person as it is on film. She is not only an actor, but also a producer and a writer, but not just any writer. This is a playwright, and recently a columnist, which we will talk about. It's very exciting. After more than 25 years of doing great work, it's even greater right now. She's got a new season of her hit show on Apple starting this spring. She's got a brand new film being released, has a very fancy publication of her essay dropping, and has successfully gotten through yet another year of marriage to a real ding dong. She's a unicorn, folks, and here she is. Please welcome my longtime nearest and

• 11:29Jason Bateman?

dearest friend, Ms. Amanda Peet, in out here. Boy, do we have stuff to talk about.

• 11:38Speaker 03

  Hi, Shawnee.

• 11:39Jason Bateman?

  Hi, honey. How are you?

• 11:41Speaker 03

  I'm okay.

• 11:42Jason Bateman?

Oh, my gosh. You got a mic set up and everything?

• 11:45Speaker 03

You guys, I did, almost did like 25 spit takers. And I wasn't sure if I was supposed to be to hear me.

• 11:52Will Arnett?

Look at you with a microphone. Look at you.

• 11:54Speaker 03

Oh, should I put that down?

• 11:56Will Arnett?

  No, it's not.

• 11:56Speaker 03

Shawnee has his. Oh, you guys all have yours.

• 11:59Sean Hayes?

We're not doing video. This isn't video.

• 12:01Jason Bateman?

That's the one we sent you, isn't it?

• 12:03Will Arnett?

I've just never seen you in this environment, so it's all new to me. It's so great to see you.

• 12:08Speaker 03

  I'm so excited.

• 12:10Sean Hayes?

I've seen you in so long.

• 12:11Jason Bateman?

She sent me a text. She said, can I look like a slob? I go, yeah, I'm in my PJs. I'm always in my PJs. The only thing you're being recorded is your voice.

• 12:18Will Arnett?

How do you think he only travels in PJs?

• 12:20Speaker 03

Wow, you are really tan, Will.

• 12:22Will Arnett?

I know, I know. I get that a lot, as you know.

• 12:26Speaker 03

  Smoking and sun, not good.

• 12:29Will Arnett?

  I know. Yeah.

• 12:30Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 12:30Jason Bateman?

Wait, wait. Is it still happening, Will? We're still chipping?

• 12:33Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 12:34Jason Bateman?

It's still, it's still really annoying that you're so good with, with, with addictions now, I guess. You've got, you've got, you've got it all handled. You can just chip away at the cigarettes and it doesn't take over?

• 12:47Will Arnett?

Yeah, I mean, I'm, I'm pretty good. I go through phases.

• 12:50Jason Bateman?

  I can't do a little of anything.

• 12:51Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 12:52Speaker 03

  Me neither. I can't either.

• 12:53Will Arnett?

  I generally can't either.

• 12:54Jason Bateman?

How are you, Amanda? How are you with sugar? I'm really bad with sugar.

• 12:57Speaker 03

  I mean, it's not great.

• 12:59Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, what's, what's, what's the one thing?

• 13:01Speaker 03

  I need it out.

• 13:02Jason Bateman?

If you, if you, if you could, if you could go to an, to an Attic's, um, what, circle? Meeting, whatever it's called, what would it, what would it be for, Amanda?

• 13:11Will Arnett?

  Oh.

• 13:13Jason Bateman?

What's, what's the thing you wanna kick?

• 13:15Speaker 03

  I can't say it.

• 13:16Jason Bateman?

  I think, I think.

• 13:16Sean Hayes?

  Oh, you can't say it?

• 13:18Speaker 03

  I'm just kidding, I'm kidding.

• 13:19Will Arnett?

Why, we talk about porn here all the time.

• 13:22Jason Bateman?

That is something I don't have a problem with.

• 13:24Will Arnett?

  Yeah, no, what is it?

• 13:25Speaker 03

  I'm addicted to exercise.

• 13:27Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 13:28Sean Hayes?

  No, for real.

• 13:29Speaker 03

Guys, I'm kidding. Oh, fucking, are you kidding me?

• 13:31Will Arnett?

  Right?

• 13:32Sean Hayes?

  Uh, right.

• 13:33Speaker 03

Maybe, do you know me at all?

• 13:34Jason Bateman?

Sean, it would be sugar for you?

• 13:36Sean Hayes?

Oh my God, I can't, I can't not go a day without eating tons of sugar.

• 13:41Speaker 03

Have you tried to just get it out of the house? Like, have you tried the thing where it's like proximity?

• 13:46Sean Hayes?

Well, and then like, I eat an apple, like.

• 13:48Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, that works.

• 13:48Sean Hayes?

Okay, well, that has sugar, but the good kind. But then I'll have a Snickers. Right after this.

• 13:54Jason Bateman?

  Who has?

• 13:54Will Arnett?

  Just a full grown Snickers.

• 13:56Jason Bateman?

Do you know I haven't had a Snickers since Halloween, uh, when I was 14?

• 14:00Sean Hayes?

But you know what? I texted these guys the other night. I came home after doing two shows. And I had a plate of spaghetti and a donut.

• 14:07Will Arnett?

  On the same plate?

• 14:08Sean Hayes?

  On the same plate.

• 14:09Will Arnett?

  On the same plate.

• 14:09Speaker 03

Don't you think you're burning enough adrenaline?

• 14:12Sean Hayes?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 14:13Speaker 03

Two shows, like, it just probably just.

• 14:14Jason Bateman?

It's a one man show, too.

• 14:15Sean Hayes?

Yeah, that's what I'm saying. You earn it, you earn that spaghetti.

• 14:18Will Arnett?

He sent the photo, he sent the photo of the, of the pasta, of the spaghetti bolognese, and then, and then, and then a chocolate donut with a bite out of it. So then I FaceTimed him, just because I wanted kind of verification. Because I thought that he'd said it for the photo to, for effect. And sure enough, donut is on the plate, he's eating them both simultaneously.

• 14:35Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 14:37Sean Hayes?

  I really was.

• 14:37Will Arnett?

  Spaghetti with donut chaser.

• 14:38Sean Hayes?

And a glass of milk, yeah.

• 14:39Speaker 03

I often think how, when, you know, I have an 11 year old, I often think of how one of the great, great pleasures of being an adult, a grown up, is that you can eat your dessert before your meal.

• 14:51Will Arnett?

  Sure.

• 14:51Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, there's no rules.

• 14:53Will Arnett?

Well, actually, I said, if you remember, I said, Sean, I said to you, are you, were you, are you at an 11 year old's birthday party?

• 14:58Sean Hayes?

Yeah, and I said, I stopped by on the way home from work.

• 15:01Will Arnett?

  Yeah. Um, Amanda Peet.

• 15:03Speaker 03

  Southie.

• 15:04Sean Hayes?

  Yes.

• 15:04Will Arnett?

So, oh my God, Amanda. I worked, you worked with Amanda. Amanda and I worked together first, almost thirty years ago. We did a film called, I know, sorry. Sorry to say that number.

• 15:15Speaker 03

  Jesus.

• 15:16Jason Bateman?

  Wait, uh, let's, let's.

• 15:17Will Arnett?

I don't feel good about it either.

• 15:19Jason Bateman?

Do you guys, do you guys both still have your, uh, your, your Boston?

• 15:23Will Arnett?

  Sad cards?

• 15:23Jason Bateman?

  Boston accents?

• 15:25Will Arnett?

They almost took our sad cards away. They came, they came on set.

• 15:28Sean Hayes?

Wait, what did you work on together?

• 15:30Will Arnett?

  Southie.

• 15:30Jason Bateman?

It's called Southie. It was a film.

• 15:32Sean Hayes?

  Oh, Southie.

• 15:32Will Arnett?

It was a film about South Boston.

• 15:34Sean Hayes?

  Oh, I didn't know that.

• 15:34Will Arnett?

How are you? Good to see you. Good, good for you, Amanda, huh? Hey, Pete, you're doing good, huh?

• 15:39Sean Hayes?

Wait, Amanda, did you do the accent too?

• 15:41Jason Bateman?

  Do you still have it?

• 15:42Speaker 03

  I, I think I might have.

• 15:43Sean Hayes?

Do it just a little bit. Just do a little bit.

• 15:46Will Arnett?

Honestly, I can't even fucking remember, because I was in, I was living in Dedham at the time.

• 15:50Speaker 03

They're gonna kick me out of the condo soon. That was terrible. Wow.

• 15:54Sean Hayes?

No, that was good, that was good.

• 15:55Speaker 03

  Condo is good, though. Condo.

• 15:57Will Arnett?

  Still rolling.

• 15:58Speaker 03

  Still rolling, wow.

• 15:59Jason Bateman?

  Still rolling. You reset yourself?

• 16:01Speaker 03

  Rude, rude.

• 16:04Speaker 03

Wait, was Donnie Wahlberg the star of that film?

• 16:06Will Arnett?

So, Donnie Wahlberg was a star. Donnie Wahlberg, Rose McGowan, uh, you, me, uh, and directed by John Shay.

• 16:14Speaker 03

  And Mira.

• 16:16Will Arnett?

  And Mira.

• 16:16Speaker 03

Who, who, by the way, Sean, I was saying, I was about to do a play after Southie, and I was telling her about how I have terrible stage fright, and I was trying to just chat with her about it, and she had, you know, she was a chain smoker, and she just said, "As soon as you wanna be good, you're dead."

• 16:36Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 16:37Will Arnett?

  By the way.

• 16:38Sean Hayes?

  Wow, that's a good quote.

• 16:39Speaker 03

  Isn't that deep?

• 16:40Will Arnett?

Yeah, she was cool. I, she was, she was no nonsense. She was cool.

• 16:45Sean Hayes?

That's kinda cool. As soon as you want to be good, yeah.

• 16:48Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 16:49Jason Bateman?

Wait, wait, tell me about the stage fright. I, I, what, I, I guess I have that. I guess we all have that a bit.

• 16:54Will Arnett?

Yeah, I have it every night.

• 16:56Jason Bateman?

How to not flip out at an early stage.

• 17:00Speaker 03

Drink, just drink, right before you get on.

• 17:01Jason Bateman?

  Is it, well, yeah.

• 17:03Will Arnett?

You know what I, you know what I do? My little sort of trick I've always done for a long time, especially when you're going to do something kinda live or whatever, and like, you're like, I gotta get out there, and I just go... I am where I am and literally use it. This is energy. Okay. And I just.

• 17:17Jason Bateman?

So don't try to get over it.

• 17:19Will Arnett?

  No.

• 17:19Speaker 03

  That's incredibly annoying.

• 17:20Will Arnett?

Yeah. Just flip it, just flip it and.

• 17:24Sean Hayes?

Flip it and forget it. Can you flip it?

• 17:26Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 17:26Speaker 03

No, I don't have those kinds of nerves, dude.

• 17:29Will Arnett?

Honestly, that's a good impression to me.

• 17:31Jason Bateman?

Now, has it always been like that? Here we go. Let's go back to the beginning, Amanda.

• 17:36Speaker 03

  Do we have to?

• 17:37Jason Bateman?

Kid. Yeah. When you were a kid, was it, was it always gonna be this? Like, did you have a plan for this? Or did you just kind of wing it? And like, the entertainment world kind of came your way? Or was it like, no, let's, let's set the oars in this direction and start rowing?

• 17:56Speaker 03

  I think both parents.

• 17:57Sean Hayes?

That's good. That's enough. Thank you.

• 18:00Jason Bateman?

And we'll go to our first break.

• 18:04Sean Hayes?

  No, both parents, sorry.

• 18:05Will Arnett?

  Off crowd.

• 18:07Speaker 03

Both parents were as far from the entertainment business as you could possibly be.

• 18:14Jason Bateman?

  What, what, what kind of?

• 18:15Speaker 03

  Corporate lawyer.

• 18:17Jason Bateman?

  Yep.

• 18:18Speaker 03

Yale undergrad, Harvard Law School. My mom was a social worker, psychotherapist.

• 18:25Speaker 03

And I feel like they saw acting in the beginning similarly to just, oh, so you wanna, you wanna start modeling?

• 18:36Jason Bateman?

  You wanna join the circus?

• 18:37Speaker 03

  You wanna be a hooker.

• 18:38Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 18:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:42Jason Bateman?

  And.

• 18:42Will Arnett?

  Sex worker.

• 18:43Speaker 03

And so. Sorry, sorry, sorry, sorry, sex worker.

• 18:46Jason Bateman?

Did you work to sort of convince them that, that, that wasn't the way you were seeing it? And what your intentions were? Or did you just kind of like hide your pursuit?

• 18:55Speaker 03

Yes, I think I was constantly trying to make it appear less frivolous.

• 19:00Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 19:00Speaker 03

  And.

• 19:02Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 19:02Speaker 03

But interestingly, apropos of what we were just saying, I think because I had terrible stage fright, it was much easier for me to book things like a Chapstick commercial or Days of Our Lives. Like, as soon as I was lucky enough to get an audition for something like a Clifford Odette's play or something like that, I was like this.

• 19:24Will Arnett?

  You're just shaking.

• 19:24Speaker 03

And I couldn't, I couldn't do what I was doing in class. You know, in real life.

• 19:30Jason Bateman?

So, so literally stage was, was like that, that was your kryptonite, but being in front of camera was, was less.

• 19:37Speaker 03

No, sorry, I didn't explain that right. So, hi- anything highbrow. I was like terrified.

• 19:45Sean Hayes?

  Oh, gotcha.

• 19:46Speaker 03

So, and then anything that was like considered more lowbrow.

• 19:50Jason Bateman?

  Right. You killed it.

• 19:51Speaker 03

I could kill it. And so then I was undoing what I wanted to portray to my parents.

• 19:58Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 19:58Speaker 03

Cause I'd be like, well, I'm on a Skittles commercial and they'd be like, I rest my case.

• 20:02Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 20:02Sean Hayes?

  Right, right, right.

• 20:03Jason Bateman?

Well, how about, how about that? That's actually, that, that, that's a good strategy to overcome, you know, like, don't overvalue something. Maybe like find something about whatever you're gonna be doing that's giving you the nerves that, that sort of undercuts it.

• 20:18Speaker 03

Well, yeah, I mean, not to get too like deep about it, but both my kids were, you know, given offers to go play and then.

• 20:28Jason Bateman?

  You know, you have three.

• 20:30Speaker 03

Oh, sorry, the two that are home and play soccer.

• 20:32Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 20:32Speaker 03

At different times in their soccer careers, were offered to play in a higher soccer team and were like, no.

• 20:40Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 20:41Sean Hayes?

  Why, why?

• 20:41Speaker 03

  Cause they were too nervous.

• 20:43Jason Bateman?

  Oh, interesting.

• 20:44Sean Hayes?

  Really?

• 20:45Jason Bateman?

  So it's catching.

• 20:45Speaker 03

So I gave them my fucking anxiety.

• 20:48Jason Bateman?

Does Ding Dong David come along with some really helpful fathering advice to these, to these young, nervous, you know, anx- anxiety riddled kids?

• 20:56Speaker 03

  Yes, I feel like.

• 20:57Jason Bateman?

  He doesn't help.

• 20:58Speaker 03

  No. It's a good balance.

• 21:00Jason Bateman?

  We love David.

• 21:01Sean Hayes?

We do love David. Yeah, just because he's not in front of the camera for my sister Tracy, David created Game of Thrones. Your husband.

• 21:07Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 21:08Will Arnett?

Oh, your sister's with, sorry, I don't understand the conceit.

• 21:11Sean Hayes?

  My, my sister.

• 21:13Jason Bateman?

Every once in a while, we have to remind the audience. Good, thank you, Will. It's helpful.

• 21:16Sean Hayes?

But wait, Amanda, did you, when you were growing up? Oh, go ahead.

• 21:20Will Arnett?

  No, you go.

• 21:21Sean Hayes?

  No, Willie, go.

• 21:21Will Arnett?

  No, no, no.

• 21:22Jason Bateman?

You guys are so polite to each other.

• 21:24Sean Hayes?

Um, wait, Amanda, when you grew up with, with a mom in that field, um, did you, did she, did she kind of try to psychoanalyze you all the time? Like, did you, did you have somebody to talk to? Was therapy constantly in the house? You know what I mean?

• 21:39Speaker 03

Okay, to be honest, I was, yeah, I was very, very close with her and very, very similar and was sent to the therapist right when I came out of her vagina.

• 21:52Sean Hayes?

  Oh, wow. Wow.

• 21:55Speaker 03

As an infant, I was like, talk therapy, let's go.

• 21:59Sean Hayes?

Yeah. You came out with the car keys, you're like, ready to go.

• 22:03Jason Bateman?

Did you ever feel like you were getting a free analysis from her? Or was it like, I can't really share with her my feelings because she's just gonna psychoanalyze me?

• 22:13Speaker 03

  I think that she...

• 22:14Jason Bateman?

Like, was it a plus or a minus?

• 22:15Speaker 03

Okay, my sister would disagree. For me, it was a plus. I didn't feel like she was looking at me as like a test dummy for her psychological theories. And she was even in psychoanalytic training in the 90s when I was in college. And I thought it was really intellectually interesting what she was talking about and really, really helpful. And I think because she felt like her mom was a clinical narcissist, she was hell-bent on being a good listener and seeing my sister and me for who we were. That's how I feel. I think my sister felt a little bit more like there was this like psychobabble orthodoxy.

• 22:58Jason Bateman?

That's older sibling. That's older sibling.

• 23:00Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah, my older sister.

• 23:02Will Arnett?

Did you think about, did you think about, through that process, did you think, oh, maybe this is an area that I want to go into? Did you consider doing that yourself?

• 23:11Sean Hayes?

Well, I always think acting is a little bit of that area.

• 23:13Jason Bateman?

Sorry, that question was for Amanda.

• 23:15Sean Hayes?

  Sorry.

• 23:16Speaker 03

  No, Sean, go. I, yeah.

• 23:18Sean Hayes?

No, no, no, go ahead. Yeah.

• 23:20Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, I think, um, when I look back, I was in, this is very unusual. I was in psychoanalysis at age 13. So I went to the shrink four days a week.

• 23:33Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 23:33Speaker 03

To talk about, um, you know, first world problems.

• 23:38Speaker 03

And I think the idea of psychoanalysis, that there are these inciting incidents that set you on a path, on a trajectory.

• 23:46Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 23:47Speaker 03

And that's storytelling. You're basically creating a narrative.

• 23:52Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 23:52Speaker 03

I mean, the old school shrinks would say you're not creating it. It's, but I think it's very similar to storytelling in every way.

• 24:02Will Arnett?

And then we create, and then that create that narrative and those, those sort of neural pathways get deeper and deeper and deeper, those grooves. And if, and if you're, the danger is that if you don't do that, I'm not advocating either way or whatever, I don't have a really position, but that, that if you, that those things get so deep that that becomes your story entrenched in your mind about who you are, I am this, this is the way, and you can, that can often lead to, I think, as you get older, you know, you, I know I speak for myself, the story that I've been telling myself about who I am for the longest time is become this thing that I've, I'm like now at this age, almost 56 and going like, wait, I gotta, I gotta look at that because I've been, I've had this

• 24:46Will Arnett?

narrative and I'm not a reliable narrator on this and, you know. Truly.

• 24:50Speaker 03

Nor is any 13 year old, by the way. And so it's blame, there's a lot of blame, right? When that idea that there is an inciting incident that hap, that something happened to you, it, it takes away, what it doesn't count is style of thinking. How you, you know, it's nature nurture. How were you born? You, I was born with a much more anxious mindset than my sister. And I think the idea that in your childhood, this A, B, and C happened, it's, it can involve a lot of blame. And so I think it's maybe for some people harder to take accountability. I don't know if that's sort of what you're saying, Will? Like you're sort of like.

• 25:35Will Arnett?

Yeah, I, I think so. I just think that we all have, first of all, we, everybody is, has their own sort of chemical makeup. And so you can have two people, like you were saying, you and your sister, you can have two people who grew up in the same environment with the same parents, have the same thing, and they're completely different. We see it in our own kids. I certainly see it in mine. And they react differently to stuff. And then.

• 25:55Will Arnett?

And it's true in my experience that I've grown up and I do things differently. And I'm only now, at this age, started to go like, wait a second, all the stuff that I thought, like, I didn't do that early on. I didn't go to psychoanalysis when I was young.

• 26:11Speaker 03

  Thank God.

• 26:12Will Arnett?

Well, maybe, but also now, now I gotta sort of retroactively, like, I'm much more actively really searching to try to unlock a lot of the stuff that made me who I am today, good and bad. And trying to understand it a little bit and go like, why do I do that? Why do I make the same mistakes? Why do I do this stuff?

• 26:32Speaker 03

  Good man.

• 26:32Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it's better to be self-aware enough to want to figure it out than just float along through life.

• 26:38Jason Bateman?

And maybe you just wouldn't have had the emotional intelligence that you have now to really do a lot of deep and honest analysis and introspection, you know? So it's, you know.

• 26:51Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 26:51Jason Bateman?

  Good time.

• 26:52Speaker 03

  You're ready when you're ready.

• 26:53Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 26:54Jason Bateman?

  We'll be right back.

• 26:58Sean Hayes?

Sonos is a sound system engineered to make you feel. You know how you can walk into a room and it just has a certain mood? The right music can completely change that. You put on a song everyone knows, and suddenly people are hanging out, singing along, maybe dancing around a little bit. It just changes the energy. And with Sonos throughout the house, you can keep that going from room to room. The music basically moves through the house with you. I've had Sonos for years and years and years. And I pump it through the house when I'm getting ready to go out, when we're having people over for dinner, and it's really, really terrific. • 30:25Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 30:29Jason Bateman?

Well, Amanda, speaking on, keeping it, keeping it deep and heavy now.

• 30:33Speaker 03

  Oh shit, sorry, god.

• 30:35Jason Bateman?

Yeah, no. What about when you're-

• 30:36Speaker 03

  She's a laugh riot.

• 30:37Jason Bateman?

What about when you're doing, what about when you're, when you're playing parts and stuff like that? Are you, are you enjoying and exploring and utilizing all the different parts of you? And, and injecting them into these characters where it's appropriate?

• 30:51Speaker 03

I am so fucking into acting right now.

• 30:52Jason Bateman?

Or, or do you like playing completely different people?

• 30:57Speaker 03

Oh, I'll do anything. I like both.

• 31:01Jason Bateman?

Right, but I mean, what is, what is, what's like your, what's like your strategy? Like, are you, are you, um, do you think about, okay, how do I create an entirely different person? Or, okay, I recognize a part of myself in this character, and so let's explore that part of myself, and we'll just call her whatever this character's called?

• 31:21Speaker 03

Well, I'm mostly given parts right now at this moment that are more, probably more like me. And, yes, sometimes when, right before I do a take, if I catch myself thinking about how to, trying to be good.

• 31:39Sean Hayes?

  Right, right.

• 31:41Speaker 03

If I think, like, I'm trying, if I-

• 31:43Will Arnett?

Is that similar to, is that similar to try to be good or thinking about how to play it?

• 31:49Speaker 03

  Yes, like orchestrating anything.

• 31:51Will Arnett?

  Orchestrating a result.

• 31:52Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 31:53Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 31:54Speaker 03

I try to pretend that David or Sarah Paulson are there at the video village.

• 32:01Jason Bateman?

  They'll call bullshit.

• 32:03Speaker 03

  And that they'll call bullshit.

• 32:04Will Arnett?

  Oh, interesting.

• 32:04Speaker 03

So I say, okay, now you have to do one where they have to, they're gonna have to guess whether it's real or not real, whether it's really you or not really you.

• 32:13Jason Bateman?

  That's awesome.

• 32:13Speaker 03

And that's the strategy for this moment.

• 32:16Sean Hayes?

Yeah, because a lot of, a lot of actors work so hard to let you know they're not acting, that it looks like acting.

• 32:23Jason Bateman?

  You're right, yeah.

• 32:24Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 32:24Jason Bateman?

Whereas, whereas if you focus on just like performing for one microscopic lens, that for some people, it's themselves, right? Like, for me, it's, it's that case. Like, I know I'm gonna watch my performance here, and I'm not gonna be able to get away with anything.

• 32:39Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 32:40Jason Bateman?

You know, I'm not going to give myself any sort of, you know, relief. Like, it's, it's gotta be super, you know, like, I'm, I'm watching. For you, you're, that, that, that- microscope is David and Sarah.

• 32:54Speaker 03

  It's never Amanda.

• 32:55Jason Bateman?

  Huh?

• 32:56Speaker 03

  Never my best friend Amanda.

• 32:57Jason Bateman?

No, I can trick Amanda. I can trick her.

• 33:00Speaker 03

  Stop it. No, you can't.

• 33:03Jason Bateman?

  Um, no, I can't.

• 33:04Will Arnett?

The other Amanda, sorry, just to be clear, the other Amanda.

• 33:06Speaker 03

Oh, sorry. I'm very close with JB's wife.

• 33:09Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 33:09Sean Hayes?

Can we talk to the other Amanda? No, Amanda and Jason were in what movie together?

• 33:16Jason Bateman?

There were two, right? Was it just two or was it more?

• 33:19Speaker 03

Oh, God, oh, my God, I forgot about the, um, I forgot about the person.

• 33:23Will Arnett?

I mean, she came out of the gate with Southie and she forgot about your shit.

• 33:26Jason Bateman?

Yeah, thanks. Which one did you forget about? Which one did you pour cement over?

• 33:32Speaker 03

Forgot about the, um, I forgot about the wheelchair one.

• 33:36Jason Bateman?

  You don't remember the title?

• 33:37Will Arnett?

  Oh, I know that one.

• 33:40Jason Bateman?

  We'll wait.

• 33:42Will Arnett?

No, I remember that one too.

• 33:45Jason Bateman?

Yeah, what was it originally called?

• 33:46Will Arnett?

In that too, right? Is that the one in Charles Grodin?

• 33:49Speaker 03

I couldn't act with him because he was too funny.

• 33:51Jason Bateman?

It was released as The Ex.

• 33:53Speaker 03

  Oh, that's right.

• 33:54Jason Bateman?

But what was it called originally? I think it had a better name originally. Anyway.

• 33:57Will Arnett?

The director's name, Jesse, Jesse Peretz?

• 33:59Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, Jesse Peretz.

• 34:00Will Arnett?

  Look at me.

• 34:01Sean Hayes?

I can't believe you know that.

• 34:02Speaker 03

  Look at you.

• 34:04Will Arnett?

Well, Amy was in it, right?

• 34:05Jason Bateman?

  Amy was in it, yeah.

• 34:05Speaker 03

  Sean, you didn't see it?

• 34:06Sean Hayes?

I, it's on my, it's on my queue.

• 34:09Jason Bateman?

I played an asshole in a wheelchair. And Amanda and I play.

• 34:14Sean Hayes?

  A week away from that.

• 34:15Jason Bateman?

  We play, um. We.

• 34:20Jason Bateman?

We play ex-boyfriend-girlfriend or kind of I wanted you to be my girlfriend back in the day, but now we meet up later in life and we were on cheer team together when I wanted you to be my girlfriend.

• 34:33Speaker 03

Oh, my God, Sean laughs. Wow, Sean.

• 34:35Jason Bateman?

And there's, there's, there's a moment in the film where I'm in my wheelchair and, uh, and we see each other and I go, hey, dear, hey. And, and, and I say, hey, remember the move? And I lift you up over my head with one arm, uh, as a seat. You're, you're sitting on my hand up over, over my head as I'm sitting in the chair. Did, did we, we did that for real, didn't we? Or were you on cables? I feel like we may have. Done it for real.

• 35:06Sean Hayes?

Cables, why? Because your hand, your arm was long enough?

• 35:09Speaker 03

  Large.

• 35:09Will Arnett?

I've seen your nearly atrophied arms. I don't think that this is.

• 35:13Jason Bateman?

Yeah, it's pathetic. Yeah. I couldn't do that with my children. But I feel like we may have.

• 35:18Speaker 03

No, we rehearsed over and over again and.

• 35:22Jason Bateman?

We did that for real, didn't we?

• 35:24Speaker 03

  Yeah, we did. We.

• 35:25Will Arnett?

You mean there weren't a couple of grips, wearing green suits, holding her?

• 35:28Jason Bateman?

  Nowadays, they'd have to. Yeah.

• 35:35Jason Bateman?

But it was, that was, that was very fun, that movie. Yeah, Charles Grodin.

• 35:40Sean Hayes?

  I love Charles Grodin.

• 35:42Jason Bateman?

And then we did Identity Thief.

• 35:45Sean Hayes?

  Yes.

• 35:45Jason Bateman?

  Remember that one?

• 35:46Speaker 03

  I sure do.

• 35:47Will Arnett?

  Oh, Identity Thief.

• 35:48Speaker 03

The thing I remember about that the most is Amanda breastfeeding Mapes in the hotel.

• 35:54Jason Bateman?

  Yes. Yeah.

• 35:55Speaker 03

  That's what I remember.

• 35:56Sean Hayes?

  Jason's Amanda, not you.

• 35:57Will Arnett?

Again, again, says a lot about your acting, Joe, but that's what she remembers.

• 36:03Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 36:03Will Arnett?

That's a great, that was a great movie. I love that Identity Thief.

• 36:07Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, that's a great movie.

• 36:08Jason Bateman?

I had so much fun on that. Ms. McCarthy crushing it. All right. Let's get, let's get back to the beginning. Let's, let's roll through this a little bit. We're gonna pick up the pace here. We're doing so much time bullshit.

• 36:20Will Arnett?

Amanda, you grew up in New York City. You were born in, born in New York, grew up in New York.

• 36:24Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 36:25Will Arnett?

Right? Went to school in New York.

• 36:27Speaker 03

  Born and raised.

• 36:28Sean Hayes?

Where did you grow up? In the city? In Manhattan?

• 36:29Speaker 03

In Manhattan, yeah. Lower 11th and 5th.

• 36:32Sean Hayes?

  Oh, look at that.

• 36:33Jason Bateman?

What is there, is there, what, what is, what is the most New York thing that is still a part of your everyday behavior? What do you think you, you, because you lived there for a while.

• 36:45Will Arnett?

  I'm working here.

• 36:46Jason Bateman?

Right, yeah. What, what would be the thing that that city gifted you in your persona?

• 36:54Speaker 03

  Psychoanalysis, of course.

• 36:55Jason Bateman?

Yeah, yeah. Everybody's looking inside over there.

• 36:59Speaker 03

  Bagels.

• 36:59Sean Hayes?

Yeah, what, what, what do you, when you, when you leave New York City, what do you miss the most?

• 37:04Speaker 03

Just the whole McGilligutting, the subway, the rubbing shoulders with other people.

• 37:12Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 37:14Jason Bateman?

  Where are you right now?

• 37:16Will Arnett?

  That was by mistake.

• 37:21Speaker 03

Oh, God. I'm in the bedroom.

• 37:24Sean Hayes?

I mean, are you in New York or Los Angeles?

• 37:26Speaker 03

Oh, sorry. Oh, sorry. Jesus. I'm in Los Angeles. Yeah, we live in Los Angeles now. Yeah.

• 37:30Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 37:32Jason Bateman?

All right, so you're starting out.

• 37:34Will Arnett?

JB, are we on a snack break?

• 37:36Jason Bateman?

I'm sorry. That's the last bite. I thought I moved the microphone far enough away. I apologize.

• 37:41Will Arnett?

What is happening? So you grew up in New York, blah, blah, blah, and you say to your parents, and your parents are a million miles from showbiz, and you go, hey, I think I'm gonna be an actor.

• 37:52Jason Bateman?

Now, were you doing any sort of, like, jobs before you got started that maybe you could say, well, but this has kind of taken off for me, and I won't have to be doing X anymore?

• 38:05Speaker 03

No. I was doing school plays. I did all the school plays. And because I went to a tiny Quaker school, I was, you know, one of the best singers there, which is saying nothing.

• 38:19Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 38:19Speaker 03

And it was a short order, not a tall order. And then as soon as I got to college, I started, I sort of walked in confidently to all of these auditions, and I never got a single play. I auditioned for 20 plays. Yeah.

• 38:36Jason Bateman?

  Oh, wow. Really?

• 38:37Speaker 03

It was as if they had already decided. They already had their own clique.

• 38:43Will Arnett?

Yeah, they're like, no, no, these parts are reserved for people who are good.

• 38:46Jason Bateman?

But were you not studying drama? Did you, had, but?

• 38:51Speaker 03

I took a teenage acting class that my mom found for me, starting when I was 13, too, as well as being in psychoanalysis.

• 38:58Jason Bateman?

  No, but what about college?

• 38:59Will Arnett?

Where was that? Where was that? Where was that? Where was that acting school when you were 13?

• 39:02Speaker 03

That was at HB Studios. So eventually, my teacher-

• 39:05Will Arnett?

  HB Studios?

• 39:06Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 39:07Sean Hayes?

  What's that?

• 39:07Will Arnett?

Yeah, so a lot of actors get this started.

• 39:09Speaker 03

So eventually, my teacher said, you know, you really need to study with Uta Hagen. And so my junior year at college, I auditioned for Uta Hagen.

• 39:19Jason Bateman?

Now, what about, so in college, were you studying drama?

• 39:24Speaker 03

No, I was studying American history.

• 39:26Jason Bateman?

Yeah. So never went into the drama program? Because I bet if you had joined the drama program, they might have felt obligated to put you in a play.

• 39:32Speaker 03

There wasn't a drama program. What's happening, Sean?

• 39:36Sean Hayes?

  That's Scotty.

• 39:37Speaker 03

  Oh, that was Scotty?

• 39:38Will Arnett?

He's just striking the set. He's just striking the set.

• 39:43Jason Bateman?

All right, so then you start auditioning. Well, okay, so college starts to beat you up a little bit and tax your confidence.

• 39:55Will Arnett?

Meanwhile, you're like, I auditioned for 20 plays, I'm not getting anything. This is for me. Like, what's the...

• 40:01Jason Bateman?

Yeah, did you go out and get an agent? How did you start auditioning?

• 40:04Speaker 03

I hadn't really admitted it quite yet. I still think, and I had, it's almost like, you know, what people say, like, you know, like a self-hating Jew or something like that. I was like a self-hating actor. I couldn't quite admit that I wanted to actually do this as more than a hobby. And was it the same for you, Sean?

• 40:23Sean Hayes?

  Oh, no, I'm just...

• 40:25Speaker 03

Oh, I thought you were like, yes, I relate to that.

• 40:27Sean Hayes?

Yeah, no, I'm just like, yeah.

• 40:29Will Arnett?

Oh, no, Sean was a prodigy.

• 40:32Sean Hayes?

No, no, I mean, a little bit, yeah. Like, well, you know, when you're young, you never think you're good. You know, like, you're just like hanging on by a thread. I mean...

• 40:41Will Arnett?

  No, I had a similar...

• 40:43Sean Hayes?

I've never been more confident than when I was young. And then I got old enough to realize, oh, no, Jason, you're full of shit.

• 40:49Will Arnett?

But also, because you worked, you worked all the time. Like, I had a similar, I moved to New York and I didn't get anything for years. Like, why the fuck did I keep doing it?

• 40:57Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 40:57Will Arnett?

Nobody wanted to hire me for anything.

• 40:58Jason Bateman?

But Amanda, you went out, but Amanda, at some point, you went out and got an agent, right? And you started auditioning?

• 41:02Speaker 03

Yeah, so then, once I was in Uta's class, all the, I was in an adult class at age 18. And so people had headshots and agents and they taught me what the, um, the, what's Backstage Magazine, but also the Ross Reports, where you could look up, there was a little booklet and it had every agent in New York City. And I just would start crossing them out and I would take the subway and go to make a day.

• 41:26Sean Hayes?

  Make submissions.

• 41:27Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 41:27Speaker 03

Yeah, and I would go in person with like full makeup.

• 41:30Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, you had to.

• 41:31Jason Bateman?

  You wanted it.

• 41:32Sean Hayes?

  Right?

• 41:32Speaker 03

And flipped my headshot under the thing. And they'd be like, thank you!

• 41:38Jason Bateman?

We got it. Stop pushing it under the door. Stop pushing it.

• 41:42Speaker 03

Yeah, we don't take unsolicited headshots.

• 41:44Will Arnett?

You know what? I've never, I've never told anybody this story. This is absolutely true. When I was like 23 and I had like a headshot, it was just terrible. And like, nothing, a fake resume.

• 41:56Jason Bateman?

Did you look worse than you look now? Can you put your hands through your hair, please?

• 41:59Will Arnett?

  Sorry.

• 41:59Jason Bateman?

Fix it, it's off your forehead, there you go.

• 42:01Speaker 03

  Cute, pet head.

• 42:02Will Arnett?

And I went, I went up to 30 Rock. This is before the advent of like high security and stuff. And I went to 30 Rock. And I went, it might have been even 92. And I went in and I got on the elevator and I went up and I put my resume on the desk at 8H.

• 42:21Sean Hayes?

  At SNL?

• 42:22Will Arnett?

  At SNL.

• 42:23Speaker 03

Honey, not everybody knows what fucking 8H is.

• 42:26Jason Bateman?

Wait, to be, to be a...

• 42:28Will Arnett?

  Well, you do, you did-

• 42:29Jason Bateman?

  Spoken by Studio 60.

• 42:30Speaker 03

  I actually didn't know that.

• 42:32Sean Hayes?

  And have they called you?

• 42:32Speaker 03

So you thought you were funny.

• 42:35Will Arnett?

  I don't know. I had no-

• 42:36Speaker 03

  I mean, you're right, but I just, I didn't mean-

• 42:38Will Arnett?

But talk about confident and unwarranted.

• 42:40Jason Bateman?

So you wanted to be on SNL early?

• 42:43Will Arnett?

I thought about it, but I had no, I didn't do sketch or anything. Anyway, this interview is not about me, but I did go and do that same thing. I went and I put the thing on, embarrassingly enough, and I walked in.

• 42:51Sean Hayes?

I just had this image of me sliding my, just like you said, Amanda, sliding my headshot and resume underneath the door, waiting three seconds, and it just comes right back.

• 43:02Jason Bateman?

With a bunch of piss on it.

• 43:05Will Arnett?

No, just a big Sharpie on the outside of the envelope, N-O.

• 43:08Speaker 03

And you guys, you guys, not only that, but eventually, so I auditioned for agents. You know, like I did monologues in their offices and eventually I got repped. And the teen rep walked me to the corner of 57th and 7th with one of her colleagues and said, and we were, she was saying, congratulations, we want to rep you. And was sort of giving me the lay of the land and then was like, um. And the other thing, we just wanted to know, so for your, you have a little bit of, you got a, you got a mustache a little bit here. We're just wondering, what can we do about that?

• 43:43Sean Hayes?

  Oh my God.

• 43:44Will Arnett?

  What?

• 43:46Speaker 03

And boy, was she right. She was right.

• 43:48Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 43:49Sean Hayes?

  Oh my God.

• 43:50Jason Bateman?

Wait a second. So how old are you?

• 43:52Will Arnett?

Don't name her, but what agency? What agency was that?

• 43:54Speaker 03

Um, it was STE at the time.

• 43:57Jason Bateman?

  And how old?

• 43:59Will Arnett?

  Right.

• 44:00Speaker 03

  18. 19?

• 44:01Jason Bateman?

  You were 18?

• 44:01Speaker 03

  19.

• 44:02Jason Bateman?

And you had a little bit of a fuzz? There and

• 44:07Speaker 03

I think it must have been more than a fuzz because I've seen a fuzz.

• 44:10Jason Bateman?

Okay, what was the strategy on removal? Was it bleaching or waxing?

• 44:14Sean Hayes?

She's like, no, she's like, no, watch this. I'm gonna grow it out. Take that.

• 44:20Will Arnett?

What was the strategy? JB wants to get it.

• 44:22Jason Bateman?

No, I want an answer to that. Did we bleach it or did we wax it?

• 44:26Speaker 03

We did everything. We did Nair, we did bleach, we did

• 44:30Will Arnett?

  Laser.

• 44:31Speaker 03

Fucking, you fucking name it, I did it.

• 44:34Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 44:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:35Sean Hayes?

  Isn't that something?

• 44:36Speaker 03

I would pay so much money to see my face like and see myself try to handle that.

• 44:43Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 44:44Speaker 03

And be like, oh, yeah, yeah, mm hmm.

• 44:45Jason Bateman?

  Was that so?

• 44:46Will Arnett?

I had an agent recommended nutritionist to me once. Yeah.

• 44:51Jason Bateman?

And I was like. This was last week?

• 44:52Will Arnett?

Got it. It was about 18 months ago.

• 44:57Will Arnett?

Under the guise of it did a lot for me and I was like, cool.

• 45:01Jason Bateman?

Hey, I had, I had, I had a really big shot agent not too long ago pitch to another person that I work with, say, hey, if it's ever appropriate,

• 45:17Jason Bateman?

and you feel like you can kind of squeeze it into the, to the conversation, ask Jason if he'd ever consider highlights. I mean, if he had highlights, it would really open things up for sort of like real sexy kind of leading me. And I was like, motherfucker, are you serious?

• 45:33Speaker 03

  Wait, agent or studio exec?

• 45:34Jason Bateman?

No, no, agent. King, king agent.

• 45:37Sean Hayes?

And, and did you do it or no?

• 45:39Jason Bateman?

No, I did not, Shawnee. I have not colored my hair since the

• 45:43Sean Hayes?

I know, it's kind of remarkable.

• 45:45Jason Bateman?

Frank Stallone vehicle Philly Boy on CBS in 1990.

• 45:50Will Arnett?

You have, you have so few grays too. You have so few grays. It's so.

• 45:55Jason Bateman?

They're coming. I do, I do feel like they're coming. There, there, there are a few that are trying to fight their way. Okay, so wait, now, so you get this note about the stash, you're addressing it, are you feeling like, yes, this is great? This is a good thing or wait a second, is that what this business is gonna be? My feelings are hurt. I'm not getting a lot of stuff, even though I just got a new, I should quit. Did you ever feel like quitting at any moment in your career?

• 46:19Speaker 03

I think more later. I think it was more later. I think that.

• 46:25Jason Bateman?

Because, because the opportunity. weren't what they were, what you wanted, or it was just like, oh, I'm good. I have nothing left to prove to myself. I've had incredible success and next.

• 46:34Speaker 03

  It sure wasn't that, Jason.

• 46:35Jason Bateman?

  Well, it could be.

• 46:36Speaker 03

  I've had incredible success.

• 46:38Jason Bateman?

  Well, guess what?

• 46:39Speaker 03

  Rest on my laurels now.

• 46:40Will Arnett?

  I completed everything.

• 46:41Jason Bateman?

  Take another look.

• 46:44Speaker 03

Yeah, I think, well, you know, like, once I started writing a little bit and when I was shooting The Chair, which, you know, when I was behind the camera and all the ladies, like Sandra Oh and everyone had to get there earlier and I could roll in in my snow pants with my mustache.

• 47:04Jason Bateman?

  And you're the boss.

• 47:05Speaker 03

And my hair and just be and but still be the boss. I was like, this is fucking great. What have I been doing this whole time?

• 47:13Jason Bateman?

Right. And then, yeah, that's okay. So then that so then the latter.

• 47:17Speaker 03

And it's really fun to have, you know, to have last cut, final cut.

• 47:23Jason Bateman?

Right. Well, let's, let's, let's, let's talk about that. Let's talk about the, how did, how did The Chair come into your orbit? So, so, so folks, she was the creator, the writer, the showrunner for the Netflix series called The Chair, starring Sandra Oh. And so was this, was this, how, how did it come to you? Tell us about that.

• 47:42Speaker 03

Because I went to Friends in Manhattan on 16th Street and there was a teacher who was there when I was there, who was really lovely. And in the New York Times, there was in the New York Times, there was a huge mishegoss because he was in a math class and he was pointing to something and he made a Nazi salute joke.

• 48:06Jason Bateman?

  Who's he?

• 48:08Speaker 03

It was the teacher. And it became at Friends Seminary at my Quaker school, this huge controversy.

• 48:13Jason Bateman?

  Friends is a school?

• 48:15Speaker 03

Friends is a school, Manhattan Friends, a Quaker school.

• 48:18Jason Bateman?

  Okay.

• 48:18Speaker 03

And it was the beginning of-

• 48:20Will Arnett?

You're broke, your love life's DOA.

• 48:22Jason Bateman?

  DOA, yeah.

• 48:23Will Arnett?

  You know.

• 48:24Sean Hayes?

I can't believe they still go there, all those six friends.

• 48:28Jason Bateman?

Jen's gonna, Jen's gonna figure it out. Sorry, go ahead.

• 48:32Speaker 03

I like this idea of having a woman of color who is the boss of a- White dude who transgresses. And it was sort of the beginning of cancel culture and all that stuff. And I knew this teacher to be a lovely, kind, Quaker leaning human being.

• 48:52Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 48:52Speaker 03

And the fact that he's, you know, incited this whole controversy, I thought, this is such a good story.

• 48:58Sean Hayes?

What can I ask, what's a Quaker? Like, I mean, I know what a Quaker is. I know what Quaker oats are.

• 49:02Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 49:02Sean Hayes?

Yeah, they make great oats. But what's a Quaker school? What does it mean?

• 49:06Speaker 03

It's, you know, it's a Christian denomination, but I feel like they're the greatest. They, they really take the word literally. So, you know, there's no priesthood. You know, in a Quaker meeting house, anyone is allowed, regardless of your religion. There's no priesthood because the idea is nobody is closer to God than anybody else.

• 49:30Sean Hayes?

  Oh, got it. Understood.

• 49:31Speaker 03

It's called a popcorn meeting when someone stands up and speaks because anyone-

• 49:34Jason Bateman?

Also great fiber. Yeah. You want to talk about a denomination that's got colon health? You'd need to go no further.

• 49:41Speaker 03

Oh, was I getting boring? Was I getting like, was it getting a little boring?

• 49:45Jason Bateman?

That's our job. We gotta pop it in every once in a while.

• 49:47Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 49:48Jason Bateman?

Hey, but what, tell me what-

• 49:49Speaker 03

  Poop, farts, mustaches.

• 49:50Jason Bateman?

You gotta do it. We're just dumb dudes. Hey, what about, what, what made you think that you could be the boss?

• 49:56Speaker 03

  Nothing.

• 49:57Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 49:57Jason Bateman?

The writer, the showrunner, the like-

• 49:59Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, what made you think?

• 50:00Jason Bateman?

But, but, I mean, everyone would love to like-

• 50:03Speaker 03

  God damn thing.

• 50:04Jason Bateman?

Would like to have their own show on, on Netflix. I mean, like, how great?

• 50:09Speaker 03

Well, first of all, I watched David and Dan do it.

• 50:12Jason Bateman?

Yeah, and you're like, Jesus, these two guys can, yeah.

• 50:16Jason Bateman?

  Holy shit.

• 50:18Speaker 03

Exactly. No, I was like, oh my God, I better not fuck this up. I think it's just like love of actors. That was it. That was like my starting point.

• 50:27Jason Bateman?

Scary though, right? Clearly an immense writing talent. And we're going to get into that. But like, where did the writing talent come from? You didn't study it in school.

• 50:37Speaker 03

  I did.

• 50:38Jason Bateman?

  You did? Okay.

• 50:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:39Jason Bateman?

  American history and, and American-

• 50:41Speaker 03

Well, I just took a lot of creative writing classes. And then- Acting just sort of took over, but I was always kind of dabbling. And then I think when I married David, he was really encouraging. When Studio 60 got canceled, he was like, "Take a step. Let's go."

• 50:59Jason Bateman?

Yeah, especially you. And that was Aaron Sorkin, wasn't it? So you had, you had, you'd just been under that. I mean, my God, those, yeah, those scripts.

• 51:08Sean Hayes?

  Incredible.

• 51:09Jason Bateman?

So wait, all right, while we're on the writing thing, let's talk about this incredible essay that was just published by The New Yorker a couple of weeks ago. If you haven't read it or looked for it, do so. It is, I mean, you tell me, Amanda, is this not the equivalent of, of an Oscar for an actor to be a writer and to get published in The New Yorker is the zenith of accomplishments, yes?

• 51:40Speaker 03

  I lost my mind.

• 51:41Sean Hayes?

I can't wait to read this. What's the name of the article?

• 51:45Speaker 03

  It doesn't have a name. It's, um...

• 51:49Will Arnett?

But what would you name it?

• 51:51Sean Hayes?

No, I mean, like, how do I find it? Just Amanda Peet, New Yorker?

• 51:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:55Will Arnett?

  Oh, there's a start.

• 51:56Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 51:58Will Arnett?

Have you ever used the Internet? Sorry, I should...

• 52:01Jason Bateman?

I have read it, and it is, not only is it an incredible piece of writing, but the subject matter, it is, it is nonfiction. It is, it is about our guest and her family and mortality. And tell, tell them the rest of it if you're comfortable, because it is just stunning. And it left me with real wet cheeks at the end.

• 52:27Speaker 03

  Thank you, JB.

• 52:27Jason Bateman?

  And I mean facial cheeks.

• 52:31Jason Bateman?

Sorry, I need to be clear.

• 52:34Speaker 03

Will, where is your finger there?

• 52:35Will Arnett?

I know, it's so far away.

• 52:37Speaker 03

  You missed it.

• 52:37Will Arnett?

Hang on a second. Jason, just say facial cheeks.

• 52:42Jason Bateman?

And I had, and I ended with real wet cheeks afterwards. Facial cheeks.

• 52:52Jason Bateman?

The boys will put that together.

• 52:53Will Arnett?

  Sure.

• 52:53Speaker 03

I can't believe that actually worked.

• 52:59Jason Bateman?

And we will be right back.

• 53:03Sean Hayes?

You know what stood the test of time? No, not bad haircuts and pretending to understand wine. For centuries, law has remained a remarkably consistent way of making our promises stick. A word becomes an agreement, and an agreement becomes a contract, and a contract becomes bound by law. Now, Harvey, the AI platform designed specifically for legal work, is helping write the next chapter of that legacy. And Harvey is already pretty well established in the legal world. More than 200,000 lawyers, 80% of the Am Law 100, and 20% of the Fortune 500 are building with Harvey, accelerating review, sharpening negotiations, uncovering insights, drafting first responses, and more.

• 53:46Sean Hayes?

Basically, Harvey is helping legal teams spend less time on repetitive work and more time on the big picture stuff. This is how the future of agreements is being crafted now. Harvey. • 54:09Sean Hayes?

Ever invest in something that seemed incredible at first, but didn't live up to the hype? Yeah, I wasted a lot of money buying a car when I was 21 years old. I spent way too much on it. It just, it never worked, and I didn't know what I was doing. Marketers know that feeling. They optimize for the numbers that look great, like impressions, but they don't see revenue. • 55:37Sean Hayes?

  season.

• 55:42Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 55:45Jason Bateman?

Amanda, tell us about some of the things that are revealed in this. I mean, deeply, deeply personal.

• 55:52Speaker 03

Well, so, on the Friday of Labor Day weekend, this last Labor Day weekend, I went to my breast surgeon. I have what's known as dense and busy breasts.

• 56:10Sean Hayes?

Guys, I'm not gonna hit that softball. Y'all leave that to you guys.

• 56:14Speaker 03

  Keep your finger dinger nearby.

• 56:16Will Arnett?

I feel like you were looking at my search history, okay?

• 56:19Sean Hayes?

  You really see that up.

• 56:27Sean Hayes?

  Okay.

• 56:28Speaker 03

No, you guys, for real. It's a real thing. And it means you have to get tested all the time because it's really...

• 56:34Sean Hayes?

Do you mind telling me what? Because I'm super into medical stuff. Like, what is that condition? What is...

• 56:39Speaker 03

I guess it just means that you're... It means that on screens, it's hard to detect cancer.

• 56:45Sean Hayes?

  Okay.

• 56:46Speaker 03

Because it's... I guess it's a little bit like a forest or something? I don't know. But there's like too many... It's too dense and busy.

• 56:54Jason Bateman?

Like vascular and cardiovascular kind of things, yeah.

• 56:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:56Will Arnett?

But all jokes aside, that's scary. That's a scary.

• 56:59Speaker 03

Yeah, so I was used to going, I go all the time. I go every six months. I get ultrasounds and as well as mammograms. And so she found something on the Friday of Labor Day weekend and went right before I left. She said, I said to her, do you think if you were a betting woman, what would you say? And she said, I think it's cancer.

• 57:21Jason Bateman?

  Oh, my God.

• 57:22Speaker 03

  So I went home.

• 57:23Jason Bateman?

You had to wait for the results of the test.

• 57:25Speaker 03

Yes. So then she said she was gonna walk it over to Cedars because it was a holiday weekend. I was like, I, I, I, I, I, I, uh, talk about Xanax. I, so I came home and then the next day, David went down to San Diego while we were waiting to hear from the doctor because the kids had a soccer tournament. And my sister called and told me that my dad was about to die. So I flew to New York and, um, and my poor sister had just dropped her last kid off at college and.

• 57:56Jason Bateman?

So she's in a great mood.

• 57:57Speaker 03

So she was dealing with a lot of like closure and loss. And, um, so my dad passed away and.

• 58:05Jason Bateman?

  I'm so sorry.

• 58:06Speaker 03

Thank you. Um, the essay is really, really funny.

• 58:11Jason Bateman?

It actually, it actually is. This, this is what, this is, this is her, her, her superpower. It is, it has the most devastating things in it. And the most hilarious, uh, stuff in the middle. It's, it's really something to read.

• 58:27Sean Hayes?

I can't wait to read it.

• 58:28Speaker 03

So anyway, when I got on the plane to come back to LA to get ready to get all the tests and go through the whole process of having breast cancer, I was like, surely I can write about this. Surely this is a weekend from hell that there's gotta, it's gotta be.

• 58:44Jason Bateman?

But you're not thinking New Yorker. You're thinking just sort of a cathartic kind of let me just journal.

• 58:47Speaker 03

Yeah, I wasn't thinking that far ahead. I was just like. This can't be that common. I mean, not that like I, you know.

• 58:54Sean Hayes?

  The Weekend from Hell.

• 58:56Speaker 03

Yeah, The Weekend from Hell was sort of what I was thinking.

• 58:58Sean Hayes?

  There's your title, yeah.

• 58:59Speaker 03

Um, and meanwhile, my mom was also in hospice. So both my parents were in hospice at the exact same time. So, you know, I just.

• 59:07Sean Hayes?

  It's all this past year.

• 59:09Speaker 03

  Just now, yeah, just now.

• 59:10Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, six months.

• 59:12Speaker 03

And I was very lucky. Everything's, you know, I'm clear. I did radiation. I have extremely lucky, the cancer they found.

• 59:18Jason Bateman?

  It was cancer.

• 59:19Speaker 03

  It was cancer, yeah, yeah.

• 59:21Jason Bateman?

  I'm so sorry.

• 59:22Speaker 03

Oh, thank you. Yeah, so I was, like I said, like, very, very lucky.

• 59:27Sean Hayes?

No one knew this, right? I mean, it is in the article is your first mention, the first time you've gone public with this, yes?

• 59:34Speaker 03

Yeah, I think because, you know, we didn't tell the kids right away. Because, you know, Frankie, we had dropped Frankie off at, at college the week before. So we, and as some people know this, but cancer, most types of cancer, it takes a while to find out what, where you are. Like, what is your treatability? What kind of breast cancer do you have? How big is your tumor?

• 59:57Sean Hayes?

And that tells you how to treat it.

• 59:58Speaker 03

Yeah, but, and, you know, I found, I found out later, now I know so much more about breast cancer that, and other cancers too. I mean, there are types of pediatric leukemia where you don't find out for a year whether you've, whether you have a treatable, you know, course. But the waiting is insane making.

• 1:00:19Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:19Speaker 03

It's just insane making. Um, so, yeah, uh, I, we didn't want to tell the kids for a while until we knew whether I was going to do chemo and what, what the course of treatment was going to be. So, um, we, I wanted to keep it a secret because I wasn't even telling my children. So, yeah.

• 1:00:40Sean Hayes?

Wow. And then, and then your, your, and then your dad passed while you were waiting for the.

• 1:00:45Speaker 03

While I was on the plane, yeah. He actually passed, yeah.

• 1:00:49Jason Bateman?

But you got there in time to say goodbye.

• 1:00:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:53Jason Bateman?

And, yeah, it's all, it's all in the article. It's, or the essay. It's like, it's so, it's so well-written. So, wait, so then, then now. Now you get home, you're starting your treatments, your mom, you're being a saint. She's living with you in hospice.

• 1:01:10Speaker 03

Yeah, Jason, Jason has come and seen my mom many times. So she, yeah, she's single. She was single. My parents got divorced and she was single and living in New York. And so she has Parkinson's disease. So once she was wheelchair bound, we, David, being all jokes aside, the mensch to end all mensches, moved my mom here and we took her in. And so she was living here for the last seven years.

• 1:01:33Jason Bateman?

I mean, your stuff that you write about, your connections with her right there at the end were just, just everything.

• 1:01:40Will Arnett?

That's so beautiful. I had no idea all these years that your mom was living with you. You never talked about it in any way.

• 1:01:48Jason Bateman?

And you're like managing this, you know, vibrant career that is, after all these years, even more vibrant and.

• 1:01:58Will Arnett?

Writing, writing and doing stuff and you're shooting that show in New York, right? You're shooting your show with him in New York at the same time.

• 1:02:04Speaker 03

Shooting with him, yeah. They were really lovely, like last summer when my, before I found out I had breast cancer. Chopper and Jon Hamm were very beautiful about my mom being in hospice and letting me go back and forth all the time. Like I have very special bosses, I have to say.

• 1:02:23Sean Hayes?

Well, this is really amazing because every time, I didn't know any of this was going on. So every time I see you, I always laugh. I was such a great time with you. And you're always so positive and have so much light about you and around you.

• 1:02:40Jason Bateman?

  This is Xanax, you guys.

• 1:02:42Will Arnett?

No, it's not, it's not down or dripping. No, it's like you're always laughing and having fun.

• 1:02:49Jason Bateman?

Well, there's Ritalin. She does a sidecar of Ritalin as well.

• 1:02:52Will Arnett?

  Sidecar.

• 1:02:54Sean Hayes?

Sidecar of Ritalin. It's true though.

• 1:02:56Jason Bateman?

I really want a sidecar of Ritalin. She is the light. She is sunshine.

• 1:03:00Sean Hayes?

You're such a joy. Like it's just amazing that to know what just, like just goes to show you have no idea what anybody's going through at any time.

• 1:03:07Speaker 03

I think my mom, thank you first of all, but yeah, my mom is.

• 1:03:13Speaker 03

Is that way, like very Jewish sense of humor, like very, you were asking about what I miss about New York, like she has that very New York-y. Sharp. Neurotic Jew, sharp, witty sense of humor and throughout her Parkinson's, you know, I mean, it's a horrible disease. I know you guys probably know a little bit about it and she would, she never really lost her sense of humor.

• 1:03:39Jason Bateman?

  That's amazing.

• 1:03:40Speaker 03

Never, never. Great. So I have a good model for, as, as Carrie Fisher said, always look for the humor. Yeah.

• 1:03:48Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:03:49Jason Bateman?

All right. So we're going to take a look at that essay for sure.

• 1:03:56Sean Hayes?

Are we going to a clip?

• 1:03:58Will Arnett?

Yeah, it did sound like you were about to go to a clip.

• 1:04:01Jason Bateman?

For the folks who don't know how to read and just enjoy their dose of Amanda Peet.

• 1:04:07Sean Hayes?

I can't wait to read it.

• 1:04:09Jason Bateman?

On the screen, they've been enjoying Your Friends and Neighbors quite a lot. Yeah. As I would imagine. As I did. You, you are too, Amanda, notwithstanding the, the, the hours spent with Jon Hamm. Cause that, cause that can be tough, you know, this guy.

• 1:04:29Will Arnett?

  That would be trying.

• 1:04:30Speaker 03

  He's a nightmare, let's face it.

• 1:04:32Jason Bateman?

  Let's face it.

• 1:04:33Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:34Jason Bateman?

Well, you know, maybe this is, people catch on, people catch on and, and we'll finally be rid of him. But until then, you guys are great on this show. The second season is, is coming up here in the spring as well as your new film. Let's talk about your new film. It's called Fantasy Life, released March 27th. You are a producer.

• 1:04:59Speaker 03

My God, Willie, you're so cute.

• 1:05:00Jason Bateman?

You are a producer on that and also the co-star and you were awarded, what were you awarded for that? Hold on, I don't want you to have to say it yourself here. I believe it was some sort of special award at South by Southwest. The film won the audience award as well. I mean, this is, and I saw it the other night and. And it's effing great. It's a, it's a real Well, I can't wait. naturalistic, um, you know, let's put it this way. If you loved, uh, Will Arnett's film, and I know all of our listeners did, uh, you will love this film too. It's got a lot of the same really great, naturalistic sort of texture to it, if you will. Um, no one's swinging for the fences with some like,

• 1:05:45Jason Bateman?

When does it come out? My performance crap. Um, it's really effortless, uh, quality. Um, When does it come out, Amanda?

• 1:05:52Speaker 03

I, I was swinging for the fences.

• 1:05:56Jason Bateman?

But no, you always, You never ask the audience to watch your performance, you know, you're never screaming. Um, like, hey, look at me act. It's, it's so easy to watch.

• 1:06:06Speaker 03

I'm screaming deep inside, look at me.

• 1:06:09Jason Bateman?

  Whatever it is, it's working.

• 1:06:10Speaker 03

  Deep inside.

• 1:06:11Jason Bateman?

Was that a, a great sense of accomplishment? Because you've been doing great work on, uh, this is what, your first film, uh, in, in 10 years? Was that important?

• 1:06:21Speaker 03

Can I just say something about that?

• 1:06:22Jason Bateman?

  To get back to movies?

• 1:06:23Speaker 03

People keep saying that. Can I just say something?

• 1:06:25Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:25Speaker 03

It's not like I chose to not work in a movie for 10 years. I just couldn't get arrested.

• 1:06:31Jason Bateman?

Yeah, but you're no longer, you know, pushing your headshots under doors and stuff. I mean, as you said, you've got this, uh, Healthy Sexy Indifference, guys. Yeah. And you, um, you're, you're busy doing things that, uh, are a little bit more important to you, I would imagine. Yes?

• 1:06:48Speaker 03

Honestly, it's really just, what is the writing good? And in this particular case, this indie writer came to me with this idea of, this was before Baby Girl. It's basically like a sort of, uh, upper crust mom who has,

• 1:07:06Jason Bateman?

  This is Matthew Shear?

• 1:07:07Speaker 03

The upper crust mom, yeah. Uh, yes, but Matthew Shear, it's like, um, you, she has an affair with the nanny, basically. She has, hires a nanny for her kids. Yes. And, um, when I read the script on about page 15, this neurotic, speaking of neurotic Jews from New York, he has a scene with his shrink where he's talking about his OCD with Judd Hirsch, where he, and he's having these, Self-hating Jew intrusive thoughts where he sees like a Jewish guy on the subway with a big nose like David and he says hook nose, hook nose, hook nose. And he thinks he's gonna say it out loud and I was like, well, this is brilliant. I want to do this.

• 1:07:51Will Arnett?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:07:52Speaker 03

It was just so fucking funny.

• 1:07:53Will Arnett?

  You were sold.

• 1:07:56Speaker 03

It's really a lot funnier than how I'm pitching it right now.

• 1:07:58Jason Bateman?

No, it's, it is, it's, but, but again, it's not asking for laughs. It's really tasteful. Elsonder Naval is in it with you as well.

• 1:08:07Speaker 03

  How funny is he?

• 1:08:08Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, he's great.

• 1:08:09Will Arnett?

He's great. Wait, when does it come out?

• 1:08:11Speaker 03

  March 27th.

• 1:08:12Will Arnett?

  March 27th.

• 1:08:13Jason Bateman?

Mm-hmm, which I believe has already passed. We're, we're doing this a little bit ahead of time. But yeah, we are.

• 1:08:19Will Arnett?

No, I know that, obviously. It's in theaters now.

• 1:08:22Jason Bateman?

Go out there and grab it, y'all. Now, uh, what is my next question? Here I come.

• 1:08:29Speaker 03

  I don't know, JB.

• 1:08:31Will Arnett?

I know. JB, just go off script a little bit, just, you know, what do you do for fun? Well, you know what she does for fun.

• 1:08:37Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:38Speaker 03

Dense and busy, dense and busy.

• 1:08:41Sean Hayes?

  Dense and busy.

• 1:08:42Speaker 03

Oh, no, that's what Will does for fun.

• 1:08:45Sean Hayes?

Wait, Amanda, what does the rest of the day look like today?

• 1:08:47Jason Bateman?

No, that's a great question. Yeah, let's do that one.

• 1:08:53Jason Bateman?

This is the most hard-hitting journalism.

• 1:08:56Sean Hayes?

  No, you're not.

• 1:08:56Will Arnett?

Are you out of your mind?

• 1:08:58Speaker 03

  I'm really boring.

• 1:08:59Sean Hayes?

No, I want to know, I want to know because I, I want, first of all, I didn't know anything that you've gone through in this past six months or year. And now I want to know, like, what, what, what do you do all day? Because the kids are away, right?

• 1:09:09Will Arnett?

What do you do all day?

• 1:09:11Sean Hayes?

  Like, because.

• 1:09:12Jason Bateman?

You're about to start, are you about to start press for, um, for, uh, for both the film and the show?

• 1:09:17Speaker 03

  Yes, yes.

• 1:09:18Jason Bateman?

And are, and is that something that you like? Do you like going out there and doing all the chat and giggles?

• 1:09:23Speaker 03

What do you guys think? I feel like when you're proud of it.

• 1:09:25Sean Hayes?

It all depends on sleep. If I slept, I'm great. I'm, I'm game to do anything. If I'm tired, I don't want to do it.

• 1:09:31Speaker 03

Do you have trouble sleeping? Let's talk about sleep because.

• 1:09:34Jason Bateman?

Yeah. I think as you get older and smarter and the brain works better, uh, and there's more stuff to think about, sleeping gets harder.

• 1:09:41Sean Hayes?

Yes, I also, and I just read somewhere that it used to be.

• 1:09:46Will Arnett?

  By read, you mean TikTok.

• 1:09:48Sean Hayes?

  Uh-huh. It's on TikTok.

• 1:09:53Sean Hayes?

By the way, it's true. I think I did see it on TikTok. Where the, where you sleep, it used to be hundreds of years ago, people only slept for three or four hours, got up, and then there was a second sleep.

• 1:10:05Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:05Jason Bateman?

  Says who?

• 1:10:07Sean Hayes?

  TikTok.

• 1:10:07Will Arnett?

  That is true.

• 1:10:08Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:10:08Will Arnett?

  He's right.

• 1:10:09Sean Hayes?

And then, so that's kind of what, what happens to me. I sleep for a little bit. This is such an old story.

• 1:10:13Will Arnett?

There was a time in New York, you can look it up, where people used to go and they'd walk around in the middle of the night. It would be, I, I remember reading this, there was a book about it, about these, and people would walk around sort of at like 1 a.m. and there'd be, there'd be like a kind of a nightlife that people, because sort of before the advent of widespread.

• 1:10:30Sean Hayes?

They gotta get your eight hours.

• 1:10:31Will Arnett?

Electric bulbs and all that kind of, that, people would go to sleep earlier and then often wake up in the night and they would have like a reprieve from their sleeping and.

• 1:10:39Sean Hayes?

I am definitely looking that up.

• 1:10:41Will Arnett?

  Go for it.

• 1:10:41Speaker 03

Were you, are you guys, um, are you ruminators? When you wake up, how do you keep your brain from being like, death? We're all gonna die.

• 1:10:51Sean Hayes?

Catastrophic thinking? Do you have catastrophic thinking?

• 1:10:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:54Sean Hayes?

  You do?

• 1:10:55Will Arnett?

  I mean, I've been, I've, yeah.

• 1:10:57Speaker 03

But so how do you stop yourself, Sean, when you, so you have two sections of sleep with a thing in the middle? So what, are you able to put your toe, your phone away?

• 1:11:07Sean Hayes?

No, no, I, I, I play games or I'll read or do whatever on my computer, you know, like I'll look, read, I'll read stuff that's, I find interesting, but most of the time I'll play games.

• 1:11:17Speaker 03

But doesn't the blue light, didn't people tell you not to put the blue?

• 1:11:20Sean Hayes?

I have glasses that, that soften the blue light.

• 1:11:23Jason Bateman?

Well, that's, so that's a great look. You've got the glasses on, the CPAP and the, and then you got the, the, what's it called? The Beetlejuice? What's, uh, Jewel, Jewel Heist? What's, what's the game you play?

• 1:11:35Will Arnett?

It's more, Candy Crush. Candy Crush, Candy Crush.

• 1:11:38Speaker 03

  That's hot. That is hot.

• 1:11:39Will Arnett?

But it's more about, it's more about what that's doing, the sort of firing all those things in your brain. Instead of, if, in that moment, if you were to wake up and pick up a book, you might find it easier to go to sleep.

• 1:11:50Sean Hayes?

  I know, but I, but I don't know.

• 1:11:51Speaker 03

Will is constantly pushing reading on this, on this podcast.

• 1:11:54Will Arnett?

  I'm sorry.

• 1:11:56Sean Hayes?

Mostly about World War II though.

• 1:11:57Will Arnett?

Not, not recently. I've, I've, no.

• 1:12:00Sean Hayes?

World War I now? Or are we into Vietnam? Which direction are you going?

• 1:12:02Will Arnett?

The last, you know what? The last couple of weeks, I've been into more sort of modern noir, which I, and I, I did one of those things, right? I said, what are the best modern noir books of the last 10 years? What would you say?

• 1:12:14Sean Hayes?

  And what'd they say?

• 1:12:15Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:15Will Arnett?

And they sent me a list of books and I

• 1:12:17Speaker 03

  Sean said, "You know where?"

• 1:12:18Will Arnett?

And I just wrote about it.

• 1:12:19Jason Bateman?

  Uh huh.

• 1:12:20Will Arnett?

Oh, sorry Sean, hang on, sorry Sean.

• 1:12:24Speaker 03

Little late, little late on the draw there. Wait, is that fiction or nonfiction?

• 1:12:29Will Arnett?

Fiction. Yeah, it's been like sort of like crime and yeah, yeah, it's been interesting.

• 1:12:32Jason Bateman?

I know, it's so good that you read all that well. It's so good. Do you read a lot, Amanda?

• 1:12:37Speaker 03

I try, yeah, I try to read a lot. I, um...

• 1:12:40Will Arnett?

  David reads a lot.

• 1:12:41Speaker 03

  David reads a lot.

• 1:12:41Will Arnett?

David and I have exchanged books. We've

• 1:12:43Speaker 03

  I know.

• 1:12:44Will Arnett?

We've handed each other books before.

• 1:12:46Speaker 03

And now he's listening to The Rest Is History. Do you know that podcast?

• 1:12:50Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 1:12:50Speaker 03

  He's obsessed.

• 1:12:52Will Arnett?

  Yeah, it's very good.

• 1:12:53Jason Bateman?

  What is that?

• 1:12:53Speaker 03

It's really fun. I feel like you-

• 1:12:55Jason Bateman?

  Like an audiobook or something?

• 1:12:57Speaker 03

It's a podcast and they, they talk about history, but in a very accessible-

• 1:13:01Jason Bateman?

  Oh, like for dum-dums?

• 1:13:02Speaker 03

  -hilarious-

• 1:13:03Jason Bateman?

  For dum-dums like me?

• 1:13:04Speaker 03

Way. For dum-dums like me. Yeah, like I'm doing the one on Iran right now. And they're so, uh, they're, Will, don't you think they're so funny?

• 1:13:13Will Arnett?

  Yeah, very, very, very interesting.

• 1:13:14Speaker 03

They're not as funny as you guys, but they're funny.

• 1:13:16Jason Bateman?

But where, how, where do people have the time to listen to podcasts?

• 1:13:20Speaker 03

  On the thinger dinner.

• 1:13:21Will Arnett?

  In the car?

• 1:13:22Speaker 03

I, you do the thinger dinner-

• 1:13:23Jason Bateman?

I'm watching the news when I'm, when I'm on the thinger.

• 1:13:25Will Arnett?

But JB, if you look, well, look about, look at, look at it this way. You, you dedicate, I'd say 80% of your time that you watch TV, which is about 80% of your day, is you're watching news, right? The other 20, you're watching sports.

• 1:13:38Jason Bateman?

I keep waiting for him to get caught, you know?

• 1:13:40Will Arnett?

No, no, no. My point is, if you were to, if you were to delegate some of that time to, to-

• 1:13:46Jason Bateman?

Sitting in a chair in a room with headphones on staring at the wall?

• 1:13:50Will Arnett?

While you're on the, while you're on the exercise machine.

• 1:13:53Speaker 03

Or I do it in the car, Will.

• 1:13:54Will Arnett?

Or in the car, yeah, in the car and listen to these guys. I think that you'd find it pretty interesting.

• 1:13:59Jason Bateman?

But I can't finish it. My car rides are like 15, 20 minutes. Is that okay?

• 1:14:02Speaker 03

  That's good. I feel like-

• 1:14:04Will Arnett?

Yeah, you'd pick it up again.

• 1:14:04Speaker 03

I do that with them, especially if you're interested in one section.

• 1:14:08Jason Bateman?

Will it hold my, will it hold my place? I don't want to have to start over when I get back in the car.

• 1:14:13Speaker 03

I just take a screenshot of where I am and that's how I know how many minutes have gone by and then I return to it.

• 1:14:18Jason Bateman?

  Of course you do.

• 1:14:18Speaker 03

You can probably do it in an easier way.

• 1:14:20Jason Bateman?

I love that you do that. Boy, that says everything.

• 1:14:23Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:14:24Will Arnett?

Yeah, that taught me a lot, in a great way.

• 1:14:26Speaker 03

  I'm scared.

• 1:14:27Will Arnett?

No, no, no, it's very, you're just, you're, you, it's very methodical and I really appreciate that.

• 1:14:32Jason Bateman?

  Well, she's a Capricorn.

• 1:14:33Speaker 03

  I'm a Capricorn.

• 1:14:34Jason Bateman?

You know, we think shit through.

• 1:14:35Will Arnett?

  Fuck that.

• 1:14:36Speaker 03

I need to give a shout out to Amanda Anka and say that I'm a Capricorn, yeah.

• 1:14:40Jason Bateman?

Yeah, no, she's aware. She knows you're rising and you're, and you're whatever.

• 1:14:45Speaker 03

No, she still needs more information, apparently, to tell me exactly what I am.

• 1:14:48Sean Hayes?

I am Cancer, how about that?

• 1:14:51Jason Bateman?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:14:51Will Arnett?

  In every situation.

• 1:14:53Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:53Will Arnett?

  Every situation.

• 1:14:59Jason Bateman?

That fang, fang, fang, she'd have been closer to Mike.

• 1:15:01Will Arnett?

I'm like a modern day Fred Nor, I'm like a, no, like a low rent Fred Norris from Howard, yeah.

• 1:15:06Speaker 03

  Wait, Sean, what's your rising?

• 1:15:08Sean Hayes?

I don't know what that means.

• 1:15:09Speaker 03

Okay, me neither. Will, what about you?

• 1:15:11Jason Bateman?

Sean, you don't have a joke for what's rising in Sean?

• 1:15:14Sean Hayes?

  Pants, something in my pants.

• 1:15:16Speaker 03

  Taurus.

• 1:15:18Jason Bateman?

Will, you know what your rising is?

• 1:15:20Will Arnett?

I forget, but Amanda, Amanda Anka does.

• 1:15:22Jason Bateman?

She's got it all on us, she's got a full forecast for all of us.

• 1:15:25Speaker 03

Amanda needs to be here so she could, yeah, she could tell us what's what in the coming...

• 1:15:29Jason Bateman?

  You're right.

• 1:15:29Will Arnett?

I, I had to send Amanda Anka like a year ago or whatever, like what time, I had to ask my mom exactly what time of day I was born. I did all this stuff, she needed to have all this information.

• 1:15:40Jason Bateman?

She wanted to know if you were a good match for her or not.

• 1:15:44Will Arnett?

She already knew, she already knew.

• 1:15:46Jason Bateman?

Yet she's sticking with me. I love her so much.

• 1:15:49Speaker 03

  She better.

• 1:15:50Jason Bateman?

And you don't want to know who else I love so much?

• 1:15:52Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:52Speaker 03

  Who?

• 1:15:52Jason Bateman?

The other Amanda in my life, Amanda Peet, today's guest. And we want to thank you for your hour and eight minutes. We love you.

• 1:16:03Will Arnett?

  We certainly do.

• 1:16:03Speaker 03

I love you, I love all three of you so much.

• 1:16:06Sean Hayes?

I love you so much too.

• 1:16:07Jason Bateman?

We love your husband, your three kids, the whole thing.

• 1:16:10Speaker 03

  I love you.

• 1:16:11Jason Bateman?

  And your talent.

• 1:16:12Speaker 03

  Thank you, JB.

• 1:16:14Jason Bateman?

So go out there, read that essay in the New Yorker, watch her movie Fantasy Life, watch her show Your Friends and Neighbors, and, um, and stay tuned for, uh, for the, the next half of this incredible woman's career and life.

• 1:16:27Speaker 03

My god, I'm gonna start crying.

• 1:16:28Jason Bateman?

  I'm gonna cry.

• 1:16:29Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 1:16:31Will Arnett?

  That was so nice.

• 1:16:32Jason Bateman?

We love you, have a great rest of your day.

• 1:16:34Speaker 03

Thank you so much, I love you gentlemen so much.

• 1:16:37Will Arnett?

  You're such a light.

• 1:16:37Speaker 03

I'm gonna hug you so hard when I see you, is that a sentence?

• 1:16:40Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:41Sean Hayes?

  Promise it.

• 1:16:41Speaker 03

  Wee, wee.

• 1:16:42Jason Bateman?

  Squeeze me, okay. Love you.

• 1:16:44Sean Hayes?

  All right, bye.

• 1:16:45Speaker 03

  Love you guys.

• 1:16:46Will Arnett?

Bye, bye, love you too, bye, bye, bye, bye.

• 1:16:52Jason Bateman?

That was Amanda Peet, one of my dearest, longest friends.

• 1:16:55Sean Hayes?

  I know.

• 1:16:55Will Arnett?

  One of my all-time faves.

• 1:16:57Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, right.

• 1:16:57Will Arnett?

  Such a great person.

• 1:16:58Sean Hayes?

Super funny. Yeah, and like I said, she's always so bright. No one would ever know anything's going on, ever.

• 1:17:04Will Arnett?

  No.

• 1:17:05Sean Hayes?

She's always, not that that like, you know, it's just somebody who knows how to

• 1:17:09Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 1:17:10Sean Hayes?

always walk in a room and light it up.

• 1:17:12Jason Bateman?

Yeah, for sure, and on screen too. Like, I just, she's just always sort of ground stuff that I watch, um, and, uh, always kind of elevates it, kind of smarts it up.

• 1:17:21Will Arnett?

You know what, JB, I have a recollection of before you guys were friends, before you'd worked together, that you always admired, you used to talk about her in this way, that she was for you like kind of the gold standard, and she was like one of those people you wanted to work with her really bad.

• 1:17:34Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:34Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:35Will Arnett?

  In the best way.

• 1:17:36Jason Bateman?

Yeah, Taleon was like that for me too.

• 1:17:38Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:39Jason Bateman?

And still to this day, like, I just think, there's, there's a, Julia Roberts is like that too, there's, there's, there's a strength and a style of, of humor and also of drama that, um, I don't know, they all kind of remind me of each other.

• 1:17:51Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:52Jason Bateman?

But yeah, she is a treasure, um, and, uh, Sean, right about now is when you start to say, hey, guys, have you ever, uh...

• 1:18:03Sean Hayes?

  I'm looking.

• 1:18:04Will Arnett?

Do you remember the time that I...

• 1:18:06Sean Hayes?

  Do you remember?

• 1:18:07Jason Bateman?

Hey, guys, you wanna know what my favorite film of hers was? And then he kind of works it in that way.

• 1:18:12Will Arnett?

  Combing, combing, internet, combing.

• 1:18:14Sean Hayes?

God, wait, we're gonna pause, we're gonna cut out this pause and the waiting.

• 1:18:18Will Arnett?

  Oh, are we?

• 1:18:19Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:20Will Arnett?

  All right.

• 1:18:20Jason Bateman?

You know, that, uh, that, that David Benioff, uh, husband of hers, you know, that's, um, they've got kind of like a dual, uh, it's a, it's a, it's a, um, double barrel shotgun over there of talent and, um, and, uh, accomplishments, and they're sort of, um...

• 1:18:39Sean Hayes?

  You know, yeah.

• 1:18:40Will Arnett?

  Sorry.

• 1:18:41Sean Hayes?

  And...

• 1:18:42Will Arnett?

  You know what?

• 1:18:43Sean Hayes?

  You know, uh, yeah.

• 1:18:45Jason Bateman?

I thought that'd be a great tea up there for one of you guys.

• 1:18:48Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 1:18:49Sean Hayes?

  Wait, yes.

• 1:18:50Jason Bateman?

Oh, God, we've got, we've got a caller, a caller is, is, uh, oh, you know, one of my favorite jobs that I've ever done, and Amanda Peet happened to be in it, we talked about it earlier, um, a real treat.

• 1:19:04Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:04Jason Bateman?

My friend, my favorite, Amanda Peet, played my wife in...

• 1:19:10Jason Bateman?

  By Vanity Thief.

• 1:19:12Will Arnett?

  By Vanity Thief.

• 1:19:17Jason Bateman?

  That's pretty good.
