This episode of Smartless is sponsored by Google Book. So the other day, I wanted to make invitations for my dog Ricky's birthday party. And I've got three things open on my laptop. An adorable photo of Ricky, a picture of a birthday cake, and the RSVP details. Thing is, as much as I look like one, I'm not a canine birthday party invitation designer. That's where Google Book comes in. It's a whole new kind of laptop with a feature called Magic Pointer. I just click the photos and different elements on my screen, and boom, Magic Pointer designs a customized birthday party invitation for Ricky. • 2:44Sean Hayes?

  Good morning.

• 2:45Jason Bateman?

  Hi.

• 2:46Sean Hayes?

Jinx, buy me a Coke. Do you know, do you drink Coke? Do you even know what a Coke is?

• 2:49Jason Bateman?

No, I don't. And what is that? Hang on a second. Jinx, buy me a Coke?

• 2:53Sean Hayes?

Jinx, buy me a Coke? You never heard jinx buy me a Coke? When you say the same thing, you go, jinx, buy me a Coke.

• 2:57Jason Bateman?

I've never heard buy me a Coke. Is that a Chicago thing, maybe?

• 2:59Sean Hayes?

  I don't know. I think it's a universal American thing.

• 3:02Jason Bateman?

No. I've been living in America for quite some time and have worked for Universal.

• 3:06Sean Hayes?

  Oh, that's right.

• 3:06Jason Bateman?

In neither of those instances did I, uh, did I hear that phrase. Welcome to a new Smartless.

• 3:29Jason Bateman?

Hey, Sean. Sean, you got up a little early today and did your hair, huh? I, well, it's leftover from last night. But I got it. Did you sleep in a bonnet? No.

• 3:38Sean Hayes?

  Did you just?

• 3:38Jason Bateman?

You know, my daughters, my daughters both sleep in bonnets now, so their hair wakes up nice and fresh. Really? Yeah. Yeah, I don't think. It's like silky satin bonnets. Look at yours.

• 3:48Sean Hayes?

Like a night shirt and a bonnet when they go, they walk around with a candle?

• 3:51Jason Bateman?

A candle, yeah. Like Scrooge, yeah.

• 3:55Jason Bateman?

  Oh.

• 3:56Will Arnett?

  Oh, Jesus.

• 3:57Jason Bateman?

Uh oh. He is ill. Yeah, I'm fucking sick still.

• 4:01Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 4:02Jason Bateman?

How about I got two colds in two weeks? I know. I can't believe that. I've got Theraflu going right now.

• 4:09Will Arnett?

I did that same thing, JB. We were talking about yesterday. I had three colds since October, and they just went back to back to back. It like insane.

• 4:17Jason Bateman?

Yeah. Why am I, are you, why am I such a bitch when I'm sick? Are you on the mend? Yeah, but I'm still coughing and I'm grouchy and draggy and so.

• 4:26Will Arnett?

  Can Sean bring you something?

• 4:27Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 4:28Will Arnett?

  I mean, sorry, can we?

• 4:29Jason Bateman?

No, he, I get it. I know who's a caretaker here.

• 4:33Will Arnett?

  Oh, how dare you.

• 4:34Jason Bateman?

  He did offer twice yesterday.

• 4:36Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 4:36Jason Bateman?

Such an angel. Well, I mean, do you really want me to? Well, no, I haven't asked you for anything yet, but I'm, I'm good. I'm all right.

• 4:43Will Arnett?

If you want something, Nick is happy to bring something over for sure.

• 4:47Jason Bateman?

My assistant. Will, where are you? Are you in LA?

• 4:49Will Arnett?

  I'm home. I'm in LA.

• 4:50Jason Bateman?

Yeah, it's so nice. Wait, so you're, wait, you're closer to me than Sean is, so you can bring me something?

• 4:56Will Arnett?

I would love to. I would love to. And if I, I'm just looking at my calendar now. I would, I would love to.

• 5:01Jason Bateman?

You looking for sleeves for your shirt today? Yeah.

• 5:04Will Arnett?

I know. Says me. Listen, at least, at least I'm wearing just because it's like gym wear. You know what I mean? I'm not like pulling a Thoreau.

• 5:12Jason Bateman?

Are you guys bitches when you're sick?

• 5:15Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 5:15Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, I'm the worst.

• 5:16Will Arnett?

All dudes are. All dudes are.

• 5:18Jason Bateman?

I'm the worst. I don't know. I think some guys can just kind of push through it. And I, me, I like cancel everything. I'm surprised I didn't, well, I know why I didn't cancel this. Yeah. I know why I didn't cancel this. This has been canceled before.

• 5:30Will Arnett?

I know. You, you, uh, I know, I rented it to somebody on the weekend, JB, not a, uh, and, uh, sorry, I'm, I'm hearing less gain from Rob for me. Okay, got you. Loud and clear, Rob. Thank you. Jesus.

• 5:44Jason Bateman?

Wait, did he give you a side text to lower your gain?

• 5:46Will Arnett?

Yeah, he did. He's like, we're getting too much of you. And you know what I mean? Anyway, somebody I ran into this weekend said you were supposed to do something and then you had to cancel because you were sick.

• 5:57Jason Bateman?

That probably would have been me. Yeah, I was supposed to go to a party with Shawnee. And what else? Oh, I was supposed to do some frickin' press thingy and I couldn't.

• 6:06Will Arnett?

  It was a press.

• 6:07Jason Bateman?

And Amanda and Franny were in New York having fun and me and Maple. Maple, she's the fucking dirty carrier that gave me this cold.

• 6:17Will Arnett?

I love when people get into, I love when people start to try to do like who they got the cold from.

• 6:24Jason Bateman?

  And it's their fault.

• 6:25Will Arnett?

Because we all just get it from, you know what I mean?

• 6:27Jason Bateman?

I know, but it's, it's her. And I had just gotten over COVID.

• 6:34Jason Bateman?

  I was weak.

• 6:35Will Arnett?

Remind us how old Maple is again?

• 6:36Jason Bateman?

And I was supposed to be babysitting and then she's, you know what? I had to test her temperature by, do you guys do this? You put your lips on the forehead? You put your lips on the forehead of someone to find out if they're running a fever or not? Because your lips, your lips will tell you. You can't put your hand against it because your hand is hot or cold, but whatever.

• 6:55Sean Hayes?

What do you mean, your lips?

• 6:56Jason Bateman?

Yeah, if you rest your lips.

• 6:57Will Arnett?

Before thermometers, for sure, that's what we did. But for sure.

• 7:01Jason Bateman?

And I think I got it by doing that, putting lips against her sweaty forehead.

• 7:04Sean Hayes?

No, you can't get it from that.

• 7:06Jason Bateman?

  How do you get it?

• 7:07Sean Hayes?

She sneezed on her hand or something. She touched the surface and you touched the surface right after.

• 7:11Will Arnett?

Who knows? And you both got it from somewhere else. I mean, what is she gonna, you gonna start to do? What are you gonna sue the person you got it from?

• 7:17Jason Bateman?

No, I know, I know. Remember that, remember that during COVID, everyone was like, who do you think they got it from?

• 7:21Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 7:21Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 7:22Jason Bateman?

  Who do you think?

• 7:23Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 7:24Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, anyway.

• 7:25Sean Hayes?

  I like it's their fault.

• 7:26Will Arnett?

  Anyway.

• 7:26Sean Hayes?

Anyway, look, Jay, you have 50 minutes left before you can go back to sleep.

• 7:30Jason Bateman?

All right. Hey, I think maybe we should move tomorrow's thing to the Zoom. I don't know if I can make it to that lunch.

• 7:34Sean Hayes?

  Oh, that's right.

• 7:35Jason Bateman?

What do you think about that? What do you think?

• 7:37Will Arnett?

Oh, yeah, we can do that. Yeah, we can do that.

• 7:38Jason Bateman?

Yeah, all right. Love it. See, I got you right.

• 7:40Will Arnett?

I'd love to not see you tomorrow, to be honest, if you are still ill.

• 7:43Jason Bateman?

Yeah, see, no one wants to get sick.

• 7:45Will Arnett?

  No.

• 7:46Jason Bateman?

All right, here we go. I'm gonna fucking pull up my bootstraps for this one because this is, this is, listen.

• 7:52Will Arnett?

Can I just say this for your, can I just say for your guest? Again, I want to reiterate because you are such a baby. And the fact, no, I'm gonna say, and the fact that you did do this is a real sign of respect to the guest because knowing you and knowing how selfish you are, this is remarkable that you were able to sort of.

• 8:10Jason Bateman?

This is a big deal for me. I like this person.

• 8:12Will Arnett?

  It's a big deal.

• 8:12Jason Bateman?

I know this person a tiny bit, but I want to know her more. Our guest today. This is the second youngest actress ever to win an Oscar. And the youngest person ever to be nominated three times. She knows how to act, but it's not because she went to some fancy drama school. She's self-taught. She also knows about world issues and is a fierce advocate for the less fortunate, but not because she went to some fancy live arts college. She's self-educated. She's glamorous, but she's not a diva. She's a major movie star, but she keeps it real, yo. And she has enormous wealth, but she still lives in her first car with her husband and two toddlers. Let's find out how she does it all, guys. Please welcome Miss Jennifer Schrader Lawrence Maroni.

• 8:57Speaker 03

I don't live in my car.

• 8:58Jason Bateman?

You do live in your car. Living in your car.

• 9:01Speaker 03

Are you referring to this TikTok? I've seen it.

• 9:04Jason Bateman?

  Oh, no, really?

• 9:05Speaker 03

  Oh, there's a TikTok that-

• 9:06Jason Bateman?

Where you're living in your car?

• 9:08Speaker 03

That my friend's nanny was like, it's like, Jennifer Lawrence, no matter how much wealth she has, she's never moved out of her first house. And she still drives her, like, the same car, but the car is like an old Buick.

• 9:17Jason Bateman?

Will's, Will's already trying to pull it up. I don't have TikTok.

• 9:20Will Arnett?

I'm not, I'm not. I was putting my thing on Do Not Serve.

• 9:23Speaker 03

  Hi, guys.

• 9:24Jason Bateman?

  Hi.

• 9:24Speaker 03

I listened to this podcast. I'm really excited to be on it.

• 9:27Will Arnett?

  Do you really?

• 9:28Jason Bateman?

So, dudes, she was supposed to be, she was my guest for the bowl.

• 9:31Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 9:32Jason Bateman?

  Yes.

• 9:33Sean Hayes?

  I know, I found out.

• 9:33Jason Bateman?

  How excited were you, Jennifer?

• 9:35Will Arnett?

  To get the cancel.

• 9:36Speaker 03

  When it got canceled?

• 9:37Jason Bateman?

Was that just like the greatest call ever? It was for, for, for, I mean, for a person like me who likes to sit at home all day, when the rain came in.

• 9:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:47Jason Bateman?

  You know.

• 9:47Speaker 03

It, it, it felt like a blessing, sure.

• 9:50Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 9:51Jason Bateman?

I don't know if I'd go that far.

• 9:53Speaker 03

Yeah, it seemed like God was shining down on just the smartless cast and me.

• 9:59Jason Bateman?

It would have been nice to be out there. How fun to be out there at the bowl.

• 10:02Speaker 03

Would you, you guys wouldn't get stage fright? Well, you guys do this in front of audiences a lot, so you're used to that.

• 10:08Jason Bateman?

  I would have been nervous.

• 10:09Speaker 03

  You would have been nervous.

• 10:10Jason Bateman?

Yeah, that's, that's a big deal, the bowl.

• 10:12Speaker 03

Is that a part of, like, you being like a little bitch?

• 10:14Jason Bateman?

  I am a little bitch.

• 10:15Speaker 03

Of what you were saying earlier. Sorry, you brought it up, not me.

• 10:18Jason Bateman?

I would have faked it, though.

• 10:20Sean Hayes?

But he found the time to comb his hair today, which is nice.

• 10:23Speaker 03

I didn't expect one of you to be in a tank top.

• 10:25Will Arnett?

  I know, I'm sorry, it's not a tank.

• 10:27Jason Bateman?

It's not a tank. It's a sleeveless t-shirt like Justin Theroux. Is it from Theroux's Target line? He's got a new line at Target, doesn't he?

• 10:34Will Arnett?

He, he wishes, he should have a line at Target.

• 10:38Speaker 03

Obviously, I thought you guys meant the row. Is that from The Row?

• 10:44Jason Bateman?

That would be a good, a good way for him to market.

• 10:46Will Arnett?

The Row? Yeah. No, I was, I was at the gym. Pardon my appearance.

• 10:51Sean Hayes?

Jennifer, so nice to meet you. Where do we find you today?

• 10:53Will Arnett?

  Jesus.

• 10:54Speaker 03

I am in my bedroom in New York. I'm in my car. My first car.

• 10:59Jason Bateman?

If you had to live in a car, what kind of car do you think it would be?

• 11:02Will Arnett?

  Oh, good car.

• 11:03Speaker 03

  Like a camper van.

• 11:04Jason Bateman?

Yeah. I, how about, Willie, I've never, I haven't talked to you about this. The new VW electric bus that you drive in your new movie? It's rad. Yeah. I know. It's really cool. But that was, like, I fantasize, I want that car. Is it great?

• 11:19Will Arnett?

Yeah. I mean, it's, uh, yes.

• 11:22Jason Bateman?

Listen to how careful he has to be with his GMC contract. And I'm thinking about my Hyundai thing right now and thinking, what, we gotta cut this. But I think that thing's pretty-

• 11:30Speaker 03

  I'm a Volvo gal myself.

• 11:31Will Arnett?

  Are you?

• 11:32Jason Bateman?

Wait, do you do the Volvo voice?

• 11:33Speaker 03

  XC90. What?

• 11:34Jason Bateman?

No. You don't, you don't do the voice of Volvo.

• 11:36Speaker 03

  Oh, no, I, I just drive a Volvo XC90.

• 11:39Sean Hayes?

An Audi. I'm an Audi, Audi.

• 11:41Jason Bateman?

  No one's asking.

• 11:41Speaker 03

  My husband's an Audi guy.

• 11:43Jason Bateman?

  Is he?

• 11:44Speaker 03

Yeah. Well, this is what it's like to be one of the guys.

• 11:49Jason Bateman?

  Wait.

• 11:50Will Arnett?

Yeah, but I would say to answer your question would be a GMC Yukon XL Denali.

• 11:55Sean Hayes?

  Oh, Jesus.

• 11:57Jason Bateman?

Wait, where are my questions? Here I come.

• 11:58Will Arnett?

Blue. I have a blue one. Sorry.

• 12:02Jason Bateman?

All right. Is it Jen or is it Jennifer?

• 12:04Speaker 03

Jen. Jennifer, if you're like trying to get my attention.

• 12:07Jason Bateman?

  Jennifer, if I'm scolding you.

• 12:09Will Arnett?

  Jennifer.

• 12:11Jason Bateman?

What about how cool that middle name Schrader is? I like that.

• 12:14Speaker 03

  Yeah. I didn't, I didn't, I didn't care about it growing up, but, um-

• 12:17Jason Bateman?

  You didn't like it?

• 12:18Speaker 03

  Yeah. No, it's-

• 12:19Sean Hayes?

  That's cool.

• 12:20Jason Bateman?

  Is that a family name?

• 12:21Speaker 03

Can you imagine if it wasn't a family name? It's my, it's my grandma's maiden name.

• 12:27Jason Bateman?

  It's nice. That's a, that's a great first name.

• 12:29Will Arnett?

Where, where, because, because Jason hasn't bothered to get to this, where are you from? I don't know enough about-

• 12:34Jason Bateman?

I'm kidding? I've got it all here. My first question.

• 12:36Will Arnett?

I wanna know. I wanna know.

• 12:37Jason Bateman?

  Check out my first question.

• 12:38Will Arnett?

  Guess? Guess?

• 12:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 12:39Will Arnett?

  Guess.

• 12:41Jason Bateman?

I feel like this is kinda well known.

• 12:42Speaker 03

I wonder if there's a state that will offend me.

• 12:45Will Arnett?

Can I, can I tell you, there might be. Can I tell you something? It's because the first time I think that I saw you in something was, is it, uh, maybe.

• 12:53Speaker 03

  Winterbone.

• 12:54Will Arnett?

Winterbone. I think of you of being from like Missouri.

• 12:58Speaker 03

  Appalachia.

• 12:58Will Arnett?

Or Appalachia, or whatever it is. That's in my mind.

• 13:01Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 13:02Jason Bateman?

That's how great you are in that.

• 13:04Speaker 03

  Oh, thank you.

• 13:06Will Arnett?

So, I'm gonna say you are from.

• 13:10Jason Bateman?

  Take your time, Will.

• 13:11Will Arnett?

Can I just say West Virginia?

• 13:12Speaker 03

  You can.

• 13:13Jason Bateman?

  Again, adjacent, Kentucky, alright?

• 13:16Will Arnett?

  Kentucky.

• 13:17Jason Bateman?

  Louisville.

• 13:17Will Arnett?

Oh, oh, okay, okay. How about that?

• 13:20Jason Bateman?

Yeah. And now she, here, that's my first question. You grew up in Kentucky with two older brothers, Jen? And you have said that you were always the tough kid. How do you think that environment shaped the kind of roles you were grabbing to? See, this is not. What I need to do, I gotta read, I gotta read the questions first, and I gotta make them my own. Are we still rolling?

• 13:40Will Arnett?

This is such a loose operation.

• 13:42Jason Bateman?

  Hey, Jen.

• 13:43Speaker 03

  You're not wearing a shirt.

• 13:44Jason Bateman?

So you got two brothers. You got, so you, alright, so, but, now, do you think? Here's the way I would phrase the question. You, all the roles that you play.

• 13:55Will Arnett?

  Fuck, dude.

• 13:56Jason Bateman?

They do, you shut up. They have, they have, they have a sass to them. And do you think that the sass is in the part, or do you bring the sass to it?

• 14:05Will Arnett?

  Ah.

• 14:06Speaker 03

Oh, goodness. I mean, most of the time, yeah, it's, it's in the part. I recently saw Meryl Streep say a quote that was, you know, she seems like she knows what she's doing. But she was like, it's about like finding the similarities between the two of us and like bridging a gap. And I was like, okay, so that'll be my thing too now.

• 14:28Jason Bateman?

Right, well, but, but I feel like that.

• 14:31Will Arnett?

  Now.

• 14:32Jason Bateman?

I try to do that mostly because I, like you, am completely untrained. And it's all just sort of like, for me, I don't wanna make this about me, but we're gonna first second. I kinda try to find what is the, what is the part of me that's closest to the part? And it seems like, cause I never catch you acting, that it seems like you're, you're, you're staying inside your goalposts. Your, the limits of, of, of what different parts of Jen is.

• 14:56Will Arnett?

You have no limits, in my view, sorry.

• 14:58Jason Bateman?

Yeah, you know? But, so, would that, would that be fair? That maybe you were doing what Meryl was talking about, and she just kinda put words to it?

• 15:06Speaker 03

Yeah, I think that's fair. Where's everybody from? Can we do a roll call?

• 15:11Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 15:12Speaker 03

  Sean?

• 15:12Sean Hayes?

  I'm from Chicago, Illinois.

• 15:14Speaker 03

  I love Chicago.

• 15:15Sean Hayes?

Isn't Chicago great? Yeah, the vibe is cool.

• 15:18Jason Bateman?

I like Chicago a lot, too.

• 15:19Sean Hayes?

  This is slippery slope, Jen.

• 15:21Speaker 03

What, he loves to talk about Chicago?

• 15:23Sean Hayes?

Oh, my God. There we go. It's pretty fantastic.

• 15:26Speaker 03

People from Chicago, they really love it in the suburbs, like, right outside of Chicago.

• 15:31Sean Hayes?

No way. By the way, this is my high school. I'm wearing the T-shirt. Are you serious? What are the odds? And then she mentioned it, and then you're wearing it?

• 15:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 15:41Jason Bateman?

Jen, why do you love Chicago so much? Have you done time there?

• 15:44Speaker 03

Done time. It's about 16, 16 months up in Chicago. My, I had, like, cousins that lived there, so then I would go and visit as a kid.

• 15:53Sean Hayes?

Have you ever shot, have you ever worked there?

• 15:55Speaker 03

  No, I've never worked there.

• 15:56Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, it's pretty cool.

• 15:57Jason Bateman?

Were your cousins in one of those suburbs, like, in, like, in planes, trains, and automobiles? When he comes home to that, to that house for Thanksgiving, that, to me, that's the idyllic suburban.

• 16:07Speaker 03

You know, that's, like, the only Thanksgiving movie.

• 16:10Jason Bateman?

I know. I put it on yesterday for my 13-year-old as a Christmas movie, and she saw in the little, the little synopsis right before I clicked play, she goes, "Wait a second, this is Thanksgiving." I'm like, "Yeah, but it doesn't matter, it's a great holiday movie." She goes, "No, I'm out."

• 16:24Sean Hayes?

  Sounds like your kid.

• 16:28Sean Hayes?

Yeah, but Jen, you know, I, it was wild. I was a teenager growing up in Chicago when John Hughes wrote and filmed all of them surrounding me, like, in all the neighborhoods around. So, and I was in high school when they would come out, pretty in pink, you know, Home Alone, or whatever, not Home Alone, but Ferris Bueller, like, all those. So it was like, wow, and I was so enamored. We were talking about your affinity for Ducky, and how much you identified with Ducky. I would call Ducky all the time. No way.

• 16:56Sean Hayes?

But anyway, but did you, so that was the thing that influenced me, was being a, Hollywood coming to Chicago. And I was like, wow, it was so close to me. What was that for you in Louisville?

• 17:08Speaker 03

Well, I just wanna, it's interesting when your age lines up with the movies that are coming out. I had that with Harry Potter. I was like 11 when the books came out and like 12, like, um, what was Hollywood like in Kentucky?

• 17:20Sean Hayes?

No, but men like, what was the influence for you? What was the outside influence to go, wow, I wanna do that?

• 17:24Speaker 03

Oh, well, I don't, I, I mean, really, nothing. It never occurred to me that that would be a thing. Or, or possible, you know, I like wanted to be a mom. I wanted to be an interior designer, which I'm not good at that. I just, that was a job option. But anyway, um, and then I went to New York with my mom on like a, a long weekend from school. And we were watching, um, street dancing, um, in Union Square. And I got like discovered and then.

• 17:54Sean Hayes?

  Oh, really?

• 17:54Will Arnett?

  Really?

• 17:55Sean Hayes?

Were you a breakdancer? Is that what you mean, like breakdancing?

• 17:57Speaker 03

She was waiting to get on the cardboard. Yeah.

• 17:59Sean Hayes?

I did that too. That's crazy.

• 18:01Speaker 03

  No, I did not.

• 18:02Sean Hayes?

No, she's kidding. Oh, I did it. Oh, sure.

• 18:05Speaker 03

  That's cool.

• 18:05Sean Hayes?

Wait, street dancing? So what, you were just watching and somebody saw you? Or were you street dancing too?

• 18:09Speaker 03

We don't get a lot of that in Kentucky. So I, my mom and I were just like, what's this? And then somebody, what?

• 18:15Will Arnett?

How were you discovered? Yeah, wait, well, what happened?

• 18:18Speaker 03

Um, this guy like came over and was like, I work for a modeling agency. Can I take your picture? And my mom and I were like, you know, had no survival instincts. We're like, sure, do you wanna go to a hotel? Like. You wanna take pictures of me? That seems like you wanna take pictures. Shirt on, off, what do you think? Top's on.

• 18:38Will Arnett?

Wait, wait, wait. So, so they go, so this person comes up, I wanna know this. So this person comes up and goes, hey, we're from a modeling agency. We want you to, we wanna sign you. We wanna do picture, whatever that, that is, that's sort of creepy. And then what's the, what's the progression from there? How does that all, how do you start making movies?

• 18:56Speaker 03

I signed with an agency that allowed me to like act, which was like commercials and stuff.

• 19:02Sean Hayes?

Out of Louisville or this is still?

• 19:03Speaker 03

No, I, so I, we had to go back to Louisville. But now that I knew that this was an opportunity, I was just like, poof. And, um, I had actually made money. I'd saved money from babysitting, but also I trained horses. And so I had like, you know, a couple grand and I was like, I'm going. And I was 14.

• 19:23Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 19:23Speaker 03

Um, and originally my brother came with me, who was like 18. And we were just like, we are gonna die.

• 19:31Jason Bateman?

Wait, just the two of you?

• 19:32Speaker 03

  Just the two of us.

• 19:34Jason Bateman?

  To New York?

• 19:35Speaker 03

Yeah. Our first meal was at Applebee's in Times Square.

• 19:40Sean Hayes?

  No way.

• 19:41Speaker 03

  It was familiar.

• 19:42Will Arnett?

  Because Sabaro was closed.

• 19:43Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 19:47Sean Hayes?

I think mine was at the M&M's store or whatever. But wait, what about?

• 19:50Will Arnett?

Not last meal, she said first meal.

• 19:52Sean Hayes?

  Okay.

• 19:55Sean Hayes?

You were 14, how old was your brother at the time?

• 19:57Speaker 03

  18.

• 19:58Sean Hayes?

So and your mom and dad were just like, great, go have a good time?

• 20:01Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, they were, I mean, they were supportive. I know that it's weird as parents to hear it back. I mean, but at the time, it was like, I think, I don't know. I think they could tell that this was just like kind of happening. And so they tried to like make it as safe as possible.

• 20:18Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 20:18Speaker 03

So they gave, so they sent me with my brother.

• 20:21Will Arnett?

So you just dropped out of school and?

• 20:22Speaker 03

Yeah, I dropped out of school. I was supposed to, I was only gonna do it for the summer and then come back for school. But at the end of summer, I had booked a sitcom that shot in LA.

• 20:31Sean Hayes?

This is the Bill and Wall show?

• 20:33Speaker 03

The Bill and Wall show. And then I was supposed to get like, you know, you're supposed to like graduate, like get homeschooled for your credits or whatever, but we just kind of, we just kind of left it.

• 20:42Sean Hayes?

  Left it.

• 20:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:44Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 20:45Sean Hayes?

Leave it. And who drove you to LA? Was it the photographer?

• 20:50Jason Bateman?

  In a van.

• 20:51Sean Hayes?

  In a van.

• 20:52Speaker 03

My dad drove us in the Blackura from Kentucky to LA.

• 20:57Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 20:58Jason Bateman?

Why, why didn't we fly? We needed a car in LA.

• 21:01Speaker 03

We needed a car in LA.

• 21:02Jason Bateman?

  Okay.

• 21:03Speaker 03

And we did a perfect swap. We, we rented, we swapped our apartment in New York for somebody else's house in LA. And it was just a Craigslist situation.

• 21:13Sean Hayes?

Oh, wow. Well, they sublet your apartment, you mean?

• 21:17Speaker 03

Yeah, and then we take their house.

• 21:18Jason Bateman?

Just a bunch of gypsies, just running around the country, chasing an artistic dream. I love it.

• 21:23Speaker 03

I know, it's like rehearsal season two and it's like, this guy's gonna fly you on a camera. And he's like, how many people said, said no? And he's like, no button. And he's like, actors, dude.

• 21:33Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 21:34Speaker 03

  Such intense dreamers.

• 21:35Jason Bateman?

I saw that, that was good.

• 21:38Sean Hayes?

And we will be right back.

• 21:42Sean Hayes?

• 25:12Jason Bateman?

And now, back to the show.

• 25:15Will Arnett?

So you're still 14. So this is months after this Union Square moment. Months later, you book a sitcom like pretty, pretty early on.

• 25:26Sean Hayes?

Do we know the sitcom or was it just a pilot?

• 25:27Jason Bateman?

  Bill Engvall.

• 25:28Speaker 03

It was called The Bill Engvall Show. It didn't do very well. I mean, it came out on TBS and I got a steady paycheck for a while. And on the, I mean, for like two years, two and a half years. And then I booked Winter's Bone on the hiatus of that show. And then the show got canceled, which was perfect timing.

• 25:46Jason Bateman?

But so what were this first?

• 25:49Speaker 03

And just like the rain canceling our show. It was just like, oh, it's a blessing.

• 25:53Will Arnett?

It was just like the rain.

• 25:54Speaker 03

  It was looking down.

• 25:55Jason Bateman?

But this first, this first exposure to acting and stuff, it felt like a, like an early fit. This was something that you, it was comfortable. This is something I want to do the rest of my life.

• 26:05Speaker 03

It was so comfortable that I found ways, I thought it had to be harder. So I remember like I would like read like an audition, like I would read sides. And I'd be like, well, this is how a normal person would say it. And then so I would change that and be like, so maybe I will say it like this.

• 26:19Jason Bateman?

Right, right, right. Well, that's really interesting, though, because like people do, they, I don't know, I feel like some people like that that give like performances will get like nominations. And then other people that just kind of like just do naturalistic, just kind of disappear, let the story take over, don't really get as much attention as like the flashy sort of performance actor. You're so naturalistic, yet you are incredibly well, uh, what would you call, uh, awarded, nominated? Recognized. Recognized, thank you. I'm sick, you guys. So, um, I, so that, that is, I love that. But do you think that maybe that's because you didn't go to acting school and

• 27:04Jason Bateman?

learn how to act? You know?

• 27:06Speaker 03

You know, my mom took me to some guy that like the agency, and don't worry, it doesn't end like that. But my mom took me to this guy that this agency told me to meet to like, you know, help me like act or whatever.

• 27:20Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 27:20Speaker 03

And he told my mom, don't put her in any, you know, acting lessons. Don't, don't do that. That guy randomly is Taylor Sheridan.

• 27:28Jason Bateman?

  Ooh.

• 27:28Speaker 03

  Isn't that weird?

• 27:30Will Arnett?

  Wait, what?

• 27:31Speaker 03

Isn't that crazy? I guess he was like an acting teacher or something back in the day.

• 27:35Jason Bateman?

  That's crazy.

• 27:35Will Arnett?

  Wait.

• 27:36Jason Bateman?

I feel like he was an, I think he, his story is that he was an actor, right? And then started writing and wrote, um,

• 27:43Will Arnett?

Sicario, that was kind of around for a while. And Denis, yeah, it's great. And Denis found him. Remember he told that story? He just, he kind of found it. It was like, wait, this is the greatest script I've ever read.

• 27:52Jason Bateman?

For Tracy, just so she knows, Taylor Sheridan created Yellowstone and I feel like Tracy doesn't need any help on that one.

• 27:58Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 27:58Jason Bateman?

Well, she may, she may. So he was also, so she was, so he was also teaching acting. That's amazing. I love that note. Don't take her to acting school. She'll learn how to act. And what a great, uh, what a great piece of advice that was. Cause you don't, you don't do that. You're, you're very easy to watch, Mrs.

• 28:16Will Arnett?

Wow. So Taylor Sheridan was the guy. So did you, have you guys ever talked about doing something? Was there any follow up to that relationship or no? It was just that brief period and then you moved on?

• 28:26Speaker 03

No, just that brief period and

• 28:28Jason Bateman?

Wow. And you haven't run into him since?

• 28:30Speaker 03

No, he, we met up about like another project, but we didn't talk about it because I don't know if we even made the connection. Somebody made the connection for me when I was doing a Q and A for a movie like two, two or three years ago, so.

• 28:44Will Arnett?

Oh, no way. So he might not even remember that connection.

• 28:48Speaker 03

Oh, yeah. I know. I mean, why would he? I was just like a little kid.

• 28:51Will Arnett?

Right. Let's get him on the horn. Yeah, that's wild.

• 28:55Jason Bateman?

All right. So all the, so the acting is comfortable. You're getting some good, um, you're getting good, uh, jobs. You get Winter's bone and, uh, Winter's bone gets.

• 29:06Will Arnett?

Sean would give anything to have a Winter's bone. What are you doing?

• 29:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:10Will Arnett?

  Give anything. Give anything.

• 29:13Jason Bateman?

Because your, your bear goes into hibernation during the winter, right, Sean? Yeah, exactly. We got it right there. It's not till spring.

• 29:21Will Arnett?

That little cub, that little cub doesn't come back with a bone till spring.

• 29:25Speaker 03

  They're so proud of themselves.

• 29:29Speaker 03

  With the Winter's bone.

• 29:30Will Arnett?

It's so fun. It's so fun. Now we're cooking with gas.

• 29:33Jason Bateman?

Good bit, guys. So wait, so Jen, so now, so now Winter's bone comes out. Everybody loves Jennifer Lawrence.

• 29:42Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 29:42Jason Bateman?

Looks like we've got a career ahead of us and now it's, we really don't need to do the school thing. That was already kind of decided, but now this solidified it, right?

• 29:52Speaker 03

Yeah. Well, then, by then, I, I mean, I still feel this way. I still feel overwhelmed. Like when I hear that somebody like graduated or something, I have envy of the like organization of even just like having the credits or like knowing how to, I, I wouldn't even know where to get started. I think I would have to start from like sixth grade or something, whatever. I don't have to do it. I get anxiety randomly that I'll have to.

• 30:14Sean Hayes?

Wow, really? That, that, what, that, that you, but you don't have any regrets about missing out on it?

• 30:20Speaker 03

I did. Now I don't. Um, but I was really lonely. I didn't have any social life as a kid. I didn't have any friends, you know, as a teenager and. Yeah.

• 30:30Jason Bateman?

Well, but did you ever have to go to school on set? Or were you, were you emancipated?

• 30:34Speaker 03

No, that's why we did it. I think because you have to pay, if you're not, um, emancipated, then they, they have to pay for a tutor for you if you're underage. And so our way of making me enticing, I think, was that we said I had a GED, so we didn't need the on set tutor. So I was an inexpensive minor. So my mom had my boyfriend at the time print out. Like a GED or a diploma or something on like Microsoft Word. And it's not like, it's not like a studio was gonna be like, hey, hmm, let's.

• 31:05Jason Bateman?

  Let's check this out.

• 31:06Will Arnett?

  So it was fake?

• 31:07Jason Bateman?

  Fake GED?

• 31:08Speaker 03

  Yeah, it was fake.

• 31:09Jason Bateman?

God, I love this family. This family is incredible.

• 31:12Speaker 03

Yeah, you should see us at Christmas. We really rip.

• 31:17Jason Bateman?

All right, but now, cause like I don't have a.

• 31:19Speaker 03

My mom, one time I brought like a British boyfriend home and she, they had, they had in celebration of me coming home roasted a pig on a spit. And my boyfriend was very fancy and I don't think like wanted to eat it, but was being polite and was eating it. And my mom was like, when I saw that naked pig on the spit, I couldn't help myself. I leaned right in and gave it a kiss and wouldn't you know it, two weeks later, I got ringworm.

• 31:42Jason Bateman?

No way. Must meet your mom.

• 31:47Will Arnett?

  Oh my gosh.

• 31:49Jason Bateman?

But I, you know, I don't have a high school diploma either and I get very, very jealous of people that are in college, that are listening to like professors give lectures and.

• 31:58Sean Hayes?

But it's so funny because then I hear both you, Jay, and you Jennifer talk about that. Sorry, Jen. And, um, and it's like.

• 32:07Speaker 03

Okay, I like that we all, okay, S H.

• 32:08Sean Hayes?

Yeah. That, um, I know, that's my, shh.

• 32:15Sean Hayes?

That, what was I gonna say? That from your perspective, you were like, oh my God, I'm so jealous of people who went to college. But as a kid who wanted to act, when I was really young, I was like envious of you guys. I was like, oh, that seems.

• 32:28Speaker 03

  But are you envious now?

• 32:29Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, not really.

• 32:30Sean Hayes?

Well, I like my experience quite a lot, yeah.

• 32:33Will Arnett?

You did. You like, I mean, you're, you're a hilltopper for life, obviously.

• 32:38Jason Bateman?

That's right. That's what the T-shirt says if it's cool.

• 32:42Speaker 03

JB, I didn't realize that we had so much in common like this.

• 32:45Jason Bateman?

I mean, but what was your, what was your way to self-educate? Mine was watching Charlie Rosen and trying to read newspapers.

• 32:54Speaker 03

Yeah, I watched a lot of like, like the History Channel and Animal Planet. I would go to the library, but we didn't, I didn't have like a library card. My family, we just weren't like organized and didn't like pay for things. So I would go, but then I would just read about like.

• 33:11Jason Bateman?

  You'd sneak in?

• 33:12Speaker 03

  Magic.

• 33:15Jason Bateman?

  Read about magic?

• 33:16Sean Hayes?

I'm gonna get a degree in magic, yeah.

• 33:18Speaker 03

I mean, left to my own devices.

• 33:20Will Arnett?

Jen, have you continued on the legacy of chaos in your own family moving forward? Do you, do you keep a sort of a healthy dose of chaos?

• 33:31Speaker 03

Such a good question. I, I married somebody who is the opposite of me. He is so organized.

• 33:39Jason Bateman?

  He's an anchor.

• 33:40Speaker 03

  He's an anchor.

• 33:41Jason Bateman?

  Everything's ordered.

• 33:42Speaker 03

Everything is ordered, like on the sink, like I have to, you know, like keep the closet doors closed. And I have like my little jobs that I work really hard to do.

• 33:53Jason Bateman?

What's the thing you just can't fucking do, goddammit? And he gets after you all the time. Jen, what's the matter with you? Why can't you?

• 34:00Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 34:03Speaker 03

Oh, I know, I know, I know. The schedule. So what, what, our kids, I'm, I mean, I'm, I get it now. I get it, but like they're, they're on a very strict schedule, you know? It's like breakfast, 7:30, like, I don't know.

• 34:17Sean Hayes?

And he does most of that?

• 34:19Speaker 03

  Well, he just keeps.

• 34:21Jason Bateman?

He's good at keeping the time.

• 34:22Speaker 03

He's good at keeping it, but we've learned to keep our marriage alive. I have a 15 minute wiggle room.

• 34:29Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 34:29Speaker 03

Cause I just, I, you know.

• 34:31Jason Bateman?

You can't be held to the precise times, otherwise the marriage is gonna suffer.

• 34:36Speaker 03

Yeah, because I can't, I'm, I will, yeah, I'm ADD. I, and I have, and I think I should go to like occupational therapy for that, but I don't know. Is anybody here ADD?

• 34:46Jason Bateman?

I, I think I am, or I'm, I'm obsessive compulsive a little bit, like, or at least about being on time. Like I'm, I'm, I'm usually on time, but I'm never early. Because I feel like if I get someplace early, I'm wasting that amount of time. Because nothing's gonna happen until it's supposed to happen.

• 35:04Speaker 03

I don't know, I, I have to be on time or I get anxious. But what I do is I picture what is happening, like what the day is, where it's gonna be, where everything's happening. None of that is like confirmed or real, but my imagination about it is so strong. Like yesterday. We were going to the circus. We were gonna go to the circus at 11.

• 35:21Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 35:22Speaker 03

I didn't buy tickets. And then the next thing I knew, I looked at my phone and I was like building a snowman with my son in the backyard and it was 12:30. And the circus was at 11, like, stuff like that. Like, it's pretty toxic.

• 35:34Will Arnett?

Because, because, because you didn't see on the schedule? Or because, because what?

• 35:38Speaker 03

I do, I do follow the schedule. Like, I, you know, I am like capable of doing that. But when I mess up, those are the mess ups.

• 35:45Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 35:45Jason Bateman?

But doesn't your, how about like the iPhone was such, I used to be just in a sea of Post-its before the iPhone. Like, I, I, I, I couldn't remember anything. I was always like missing appointments. But now the iPhone with the little alarm situation, little calendar.

• 36:00Speaker 03

It doesn't work for me. Watch this.

• 36:02Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 36:02Speaker 03

  I tried it last night.

• 36:03Jason Bateman?

  Uh oh.

• 36:04Speaker 03

Siri, tell me I'm beautiful in one hour.

• 36:10Speaker 03

I don't see I'm beautiful in your contacts. It just, it never does it.

• 36:14Jason Bateman?

  See, yeah, I get it.

• 36:15Speaker 03

And then it'll just like call my trainer.

• 36:20Will Arnett?

Cause it wants to help you get beautiful. Listen.

• 36:22Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's very instinctual.

• 36:24Jason Bateman?

What about a nice assistant? Let's get, let's get you a nice assistant or two.

• 36:28Speaker 03

Oh, I have, I have the best. I love my assistants. But it's, it's really hard what, what I put them through. I know, it's not that bad. I mean, my God, I'm a mother. My kids get to school on time.

• 36:40Jason Bateman?

Yeah, yeah. Now, okay, so everything's cruising along and it's feeling, um, kind of normal. Winter's bone happens. It, it's.

• 36:49Will Arnett?

  And that just like.

• 36:50Speaker 03

Winter's bone happens? No, it wasn't exactly like that. I got nominated, but you know, it was like, it was an indie and I, I still kind of felt like I was gonna just be like an indie actress. Cause I had starred in a couple of other things that were like small and I had gotten like little awards for them. Like two other jobs.

• 37:08Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 37:08Will Arnett?

But you still have kind of an indie, indie vibe, like in the best way. I mean that as a compliment. Yeah, yeah, you do.

• 37:14Speaker 03

I take it as a compliment, thank you.

• 37:15Will Arnett?

  You do.

• 37:16Speaker 03

Um, and so I was like, yeah, this is gonna be, this is, I'm right on track. I'm gonna be like the indie lady. And then I, I auditioned for The Hunger Games. And then when I booked The Hunger Games, it was the same kind of, uh, season as like award season for, no, wait, that was Silver Linings. So I got famous just from booking Hunger Games. And then, and then.

• 37:40Jason Bateman?

Oh, because the people who were fans of the book were like, oh, she's gonna be.

• 37:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:44Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 37:45Speaker 03

Yeah, cuz I used to do the Santa Monica Stairs. And I remember being like, I don't think I can do the Santa Monica Stairs anymore. I'm too famous.

• 37:53Jason Bateman?

So then, were you, so then were you reluctant, you were reluctant to take that part? Cuz you thought it was gonna be too, yeah?

• 37:58Speaker 03

I thought it was gonna, yeah, Twilight had come out and it was like, holy fucking shit. Like, there were like helicopter pictures of them, like, just trying to live in a guest house. And it just didn't seem like a nice life. And I had a good situation, like, I had enough money for what I, you know, and I could do what I want. Like, there was just, I didn't know if it was gonna be worth it, you know, exciting, but maybe not ultimately worth it. And I did, I was always focused on, like, my future being a mom. And so I was like, I picture myself being a soccer mom with a minivan and like.

• 38:31Jason Bateman?

  Love it.

• 38:31Speaker 03

You know, and what if I'm, what if I can't do that? Because there's like, you know.

• 38:36Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 38:36Speaker 03

I'm like a Kim Kardashian or something. But I thought about it and then I said yes, and I don't, I don't regret it.

• 38:42Jason Bateman?

But wait, wait, wait, before you said yes, well, take us through the sort of the deliberation process. Who did, did you, did you reach out? Was it like agents, parents, friends, or all the above that helped you come to that decision? Or was it just you running up the Santa Monica Stairs and figuring it out?

• 38:57Speaker 03

It was just me, you know, running up the Santa Monica Stairs. Cuz there's not really anybody that can help you. Like, you know, every, mostly everybody's like, are you insane? You have to say yes to that. You're gonna regret that for the rest of your life.

• 39:10Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 39:11Speaker 03

Um, and then taking time to like, think about, I know, I knew that I'd be connected to that character forever. Um, which isn't good or bad. It was just something to think about. And I ultimately, I'm so happy about that. I love that. I love that I'm still connected to that.

• 39:28Jason Bateman?

  Like, all these years later?

• 39:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 39:30Sean Hayes?

Yeah, isn't it funny too, like, you, as an actor, you like. Work towards, you know, becoming successful. And then you have exactly what you're talking about, the struggle of, well, I know this is going to be successful. You know, do I associate myself with that? But that's the thing where we want. We want to be, anybody wants to be successful in any job they do.

• 39:52Speaker 03

I know, but our job is very closely connected with our lives.

• 39:56Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 39:57Speaker 03

I mean, I guess everybody says, but.

• 39:59Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 39:59Jason Bateman?

So you say yes to the thingy at the Hunger Games and then you get the nomination.

• 40:05Speaker 03

And then my saying yes happened this, like that was announced at the same, in the same season as award season for Silver Linings Playbook.

• 40:15Sean Hayes?

  Oh, wow.

• 40:16Speaker 03

Which I was like winning all of those awards leading up to that you win, like before you win the Big Daddy. And so I became the most famous person in the world. And I was like, so.

• 40:28Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 40:28Speaker 03

  Yeah, it was fast.

• 40:29Jason Bateman?

And tell me, what, honest ratio between excitement and panic?

• 40:36Speaker 03

Oh, God, I don't know, because they blend.

• 40:39Jason Bateman?

Right, it must have been exciting for a second.

• 40:41Speaker 03

It was very exciting, it was so exciting. But I was also like working really, like the whole time. I didn't have, like during that era, I didn't have like more than two weeks off in like five years. So when I was like going to the awards things, when I won, I was shooting Catching Fire. And I was like, I mean, even, yeah, I was like flying in and out to go to a party and then landing at four in the morning and then going to set for the Hunger Games at seven in the morning. So just, I don't think I ever got, like by the time I finished the Hunger Games, I like came back to like the condo that I lived in when I was like a teenager. Because I just didn't live anywhere.

• 41:22Sean Hayes?

And it was probably a great distraction to, like the craziness was a distraction to not absorb everything.

• 41:28Speaker 03

Yeah, and I like lived with my best friend. So that was nice. That definitely stopped me from getting full of myself.

• 41:35Will Arnett?

But when the music kind of stopped, when you came back to the condo after all that time, did you feel like, oh my, did it feel like such a big part of your life had just kind of gone by?

• 41:44Sean Hayes?

You can't go to Starbucks anymore. And like all that stuff started to really kind of.

• 41:48Will Arnett?

Did it feel like a time warp, a time warp a little bit?

• 41:50Speaker 03

Yeah, but you know what? It was like, I am a homebody and I realized that I could use this to my advantage. And that was cool. I can just be like, oh, I can't come to your party. I'm too famous. I can't leave the house.

• 42:05Jason Bateman?

Like being pregnant, right? You can just say, oh, yeah, no, I gotta go. I gotta, I gotta leave early.

• 42:09Speaker 03

  Like being pregnant?

• 42:10Sean Hayes?

  Well, yeah, my wife.

• 42:11Speaker 03

Do you do that like when your wife is pregnant?

• 42:13Jason Bateman?

My, yeah, it was like, it was, it's a great way to get out of a party early or.

• 42:16Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 42:17Jason Bateman?

Or, or you have the baby at home, you know?

• 42:19Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, now with kids, you don't have to do anything.

• 42:21Jason Bateman?

Sean still does it with his dog Ricky.

• 42:23Will Arnett?

Yeah. Sean does it all the time. He's like, we gotta get back to Ricky. And we're like, it's 7:00 PM. You've been gone two hours.

• 42:28Jason Bateman?

Did she leave a bunch of food out?

• 42:30Sean Hayes?

  No, well, I mean.

• 42:31Speaker 03

  Do you not have kids?

• 42:33Sean Hayes?

I don't have, we don't have kids, no, but we have a dog.

• 42:35Speaker 03

Not human kids. You have such calm dad energy.

• 42:38Jason Bateman?

  I know.

• 42:39Sean Hayes?

You know what? It's because I didn't have one. So we, that's another podcast, but yeah. Cause I didn't have one. So I think, I have a fantasy of being a dad because of the way I would, I wasn't fathered. But then, we've had this conversation so, so many times about, you know, I, uh-oh.

• 42:57Jason Bateman?

I've written like three jokes since you've been talking. About just driving fast, about stick shift. Go ahead, keep going.

• 43:07Sean Hayes?

But, yeah, no, but I, I, I always say that I, neither me or Scotty, my husband, is 100% wanting kids. And I was like, if he was 100%, it was like, oh, my God, I want them, I want them so bad. Then I'd be like, great, let's do it. But we're both like 85, you know, like, so.

• 43:22Speaker 03

  No.

• 43:22Sean Hayes?

It's not, it's not fair to the kid, yeah.

• 43:24Jason Bateman?

I do feel though that like, well, during the nine months it takes to make a baby, it, it helps, that's a useful time for parents to kind of get their head around becoming parents. So take that for what it's, what it's worth. That was.

• 43:39Speaker 03

I don't know. Whenever anybody tells me like, I'm not sure, I'm like, don't do it.

• 43:43Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 43:44Speaker 03

Cause I feel it's so weird that people are like, oh, you don't have kids? You don't have kids? And then when you have a kid, you're like, what the fuck?

• 43:50Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 43:50Speaker 03

Everybody should have been like, when I said, it should have been one out of a thousand people that goes, okay, I think I'm gonna do it. And everybody's like, are you sure?

• 43:59Sean Hayes?

  Right, right, right.

• 44:00Speaker 03

Like, that's the way it should be.

• 44:00Sean Hayes?

And it doesn't help, like I said this too, it doesn't help like while, while somebody's rocking their screaming baby, you know, behind their back, they go, don't have kids.

• 44:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:09Sean Hayes?

You know? And like, okay, well, I've seen that enough.

• 44:11Jason Bateman?

  We're doing bits.

• 44:12Sean Hayes?

  It's just bits.

• 44:13Jason Bateman?

  It's just bits.

• 44:15Sean Hayes?

  We'll be right back.

• 44:19Sean Hayes?

And now back to the show.

• 46:55Jason Bateman?

But speaking of babies now, Jen, now you now, are you the are you the soccer mom that you were dreaming about? Like, does it?

• 47:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:02Jason Bateman?

  Are you tempted to like?

• 47:03Speaker 03

  I'm an ice hockey mom.

• 47:05Jason Bateman?

  No way.

• 47:06Speaker 03

Yeah, I never saw that coming in Kentucky. I'm an ice hockey mom.

• 47:09Jason Bateman?

Yeah. The four year old is playing ice hockey?

• 47:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:12Jason Bateman?

  Or is it dad?

• 47:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:16Speaker 03

  The four year old.

• 47:17Jason Bateman?

  Yeah?

• 47:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:18Jason Bateman?

  That's a good one.

• 47:19Speaker 03

I mean, my husband played hockey growing up and he's. That's so hot when they play hockey together like in the house like it true. It really turns me on.

• 47:27Will Arnett?

  Is he Canadian?

• 47:30Speaker 03

  No, well, almost Vermont.

• 47:32Will Arnett?

OK, good. Yeah, yeah, we love hockey. Hockey is my sport.

• 47:34Jason Bateman?

Well, what about that? Has that hockey gear started smelling yet on the four year old? Because the hockey gear is bad.

• 47:39Speaker 03

No, he told me I had to brush my teeth yesterday.

• 47:42Jason Bateman?

Oh, you're a person or your kid?

• 47:45Speaker 03

He was like, you should brush your teeth, mommy.

• 47:46Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, they'll tell you straight.

• 47:49Will Arnett?

I used to I used to have to bring my hockey equipment in the side and had to take it to the basement because it smelled so bad. The hockey bag is the worst. My mom would be like, it had to be. Had to keep it in the boiler room at the house because it smelled so bad.

• 48:02Jason Bateman?

Wait, so but Jen, don't you just want?

• 48:04Speaker 03

What do you do about that baking setup?

• 48:06Will Arnett?

Nothing, nothing. You just it just is what it is.

• 48:08Jason Bateman?

  You go buy new stuff.

• 48:10Speaker 03

  A, are you Canadian?

• 48:11Will Arnett?

  I'm Canadian, yeah.

• 48:12Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 48:15Will Arnett?

  Boy.

• 48:16Jason Bateman?

Yeah, that'll stop it. We'll tighten everything.

• 48:18Will Arnett?

  It really landed.

• 48:21Jason Bateman?

I'm tempted to just like not ever work again and just be like home with kids and.

• 48:29Will Arnett?

  Tempted.

• 48:29Jason Bateman?

  Like, yeah, it's just.

• 48:31Speaker 03

That's me. I identify as a stay at home mom.

• 48:34Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 48:35Speaker 03

But I am obviously. So then.

• 48:36Jason Bateman?

When he says home and kids, he means on the golf course, but listen. No, I've actually, I've lost my passion for that lately. I don't know what's going on. I know, same here.

• 48:43Speaker 03

You're just sick. You'll get it back.

• 48:45Jason Bateman?

I know, yeah. No, but I do, I do love, I love not doing anything.

• 48:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 48:51Jason Bateman?

Like, like right now, we're, listener, we're, we're during, we're in the holidays right now. This will air later, but the, the two weeks around Christmas and New Year's, I just love that there's nothing to do except

• 49:01Speaker 03

  I know.

• 49:01Jason Bateman?

stay in your PJs, make a fire and, and watch movies. Yeah. I love that.

• 49:06Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, nothing's required.

• 49:07Speaker 03

I'm not used to being busy like this. I normally like, I have a busy like three months while I'm filming, you know? But even in that sense, it's calm because there is nothing else to do.

• 49:19Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 49:20Speaker 03

I just go to work. I do that. I come home, I sleep and then I do it again.

• 49:23Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 49:24Speaker 03

And then like two weeks while you promote it is hectic, but like something like this where I'm like doing the, I don't know.

• 49:30Jason Bateman?

Right. So right now you're doing some campaigning and it's, it's busy. You gotta do a bunch of stuff like this. How do you like doing? Do you like doing stuff like this? I, I'm.

• 49:38Speaker 03

I like doing stuff like this. This is like a fun conversation with interesting people.

• 49:42Jason Bateman?

Right. As opposed to doing. When do they get here?

• 49:44Speaker 03

But like Q and A's, you know, like a Q and A that like starts at nine, like

• 49:49Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 49:49Speaker 03

  nine PM?

• 49:51Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 49:51Jason Bateman?

Yeah, yeah. Oh, after the screening?

• 49:53Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 49:54Jason Bateman?

How do you stay awake? What time do you go to bed? I'm, I have half an eye open at eight thirty.

• 49:58Speaker 03

Oh, I am in bed. I'm, Kindle is lit.

• 50:02Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 50:03Speaker 03

Until like nine fifteen and then I don't even have like Kindle light on normally by nine fifteen.

• 50:07Jason Bateman?

So Kindle will put you to sleep?

• 50:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:10Jason Bateman?

The reading puts you to sleep?

• 50:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:12Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, Will's a big reader.

• 50:13Sean Hayes?

You know, the, that's true. The like, the old, like the older you get, I went to a couple of parties that started at like eight o'clock at night. I'm like, who starts a party at eight?

• 50:22Jason Bateman?

Well, that, this, that one this weekend that I couldn't get to started at eight. What time did you get there?

• 50:26Sean Hayes?

I got there right at eight.

• 50:28Jason Bateman?

Right. So you could leave at eight thirty?

• 50:29Speaker 03

I was planning on going to a Christmas party tomorrow, but it's, it starts at nine. So.

• 50:34Jason Bateman?

Yeah, why? That's rude. You know, all that's, all that means is that we're going to be drinking a lot. When you set your time start at nine, that means it's going to be a lot of booze.

• 50:42Speaker 03

And I just, you can't, you can't be hungover with a nine month old and a three year old. It's just not an option.

• 50:48Sean Hayes?

Wait, Jen, when you were imitating your mom, that was so funny and she has that southern, you know, drawl or twang or whatever. Did you have that and got rid of it or did you never have it?

• 50:57Speaker 03

No, I had it and got rid of it. I, I listened to like CDs. Remember CDs?

• 51:03Jason Bateman?

  Come on, really?

• 51:04Will Arnett?

  Did you really?

• 51:05Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 51:05Speaker 03

I did, but I mean, my agency gave me CDs and I listened to them and I did them and like repeated all of the things, but I, I think that probably just time.

• 51:13Jason Bateman?

Time, yeah, time in Los Angeles.

• 51:15Speaker 03

Especially that young fourteen, fifty, you just start sounding like your surroundings.

• 51:19Will Arnett?

Yeah, I got rid of my Canadian accent the same way.

• 51:22Jason Bateman?

  When?

• 51:23Will Arnett?

Get out, Sean. How dare you?

• 51:25Speaker 03

You did, you just said A and I think a boat.

• 51:28Will Arnett?

  A boat.

• 51:29Speaker 03

What part of Canada? I've worked, I've worked there, so I know all the provinces.

• 51:33Will Arnett?

  Toronto.

• 51:34Speaker 03

  Oh, okay.

• 51:35Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 51:35Speaker 03

  Cool. Big city guy?

• 51:37Will Arnett?

Yeah, I'm a big city dude. That's kind of my, that's kind of my cross to it.

• 51:40Speaker 03

I'm more familiar with the Quebec region.

• 51:43Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 51:44Jason Bateman?

  Oh, is that Montreal?

• 51:45Will Arnett?

That's the, Montreal is in Quebec, yeah. Montreal's in Quebec, yeah.

• 51:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:48Will Arnett?

  Beautiful part of the world.

• 51:49Jason Bateman?

Here's a question I know Sean's gonna love. You joked that you once fangirled too hard on meeting Jack Nicholson. What is your most recent embarrassing celebrity encounter?

• 51:59Speaker 03

I, I think I like frightened Draco Malfoy. What's his name? Tom, Tom Feldman.

• 52:05Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, really?

• 52:06Speaker 03

We were doing Fallon and you know how dark it is in those, in those, like when you're like behind the curtain or whatever, it's so dark on the late shows. And I had finished and was walking out. He was gonna go on after me and I just was like, and I was like, scared him.

• 52:23Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 52:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 52:24Jason Bateman?

Cause you were so fan, you fanned out. I know, it's wild when you run into people that you, you kind of, that, that, that stuck with you because of a film when you were growing up or whatever and you finally see them.

• 52:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 52:34Jason Bateman?

I know. And then it just like, you say like that you love them so much and then they're nice and then it just stops.

• 52:41Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 52:41Jason Bateman?

  Right?

• 52:41Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 52:42Jason Bateman?

  Conversation just stops.

• 52:42Sean Hayes?

I know, I ran into, I just ran into Molly Ringwald like a year ago. I was like, oh my God.

• 52:46Speaker 03

I mean, Nathan Fielder, I saw, I, he was at a party and I tried to keep, I, I think I kept my cool. I, but yeah.

• 52:53Jason Bateman?

I had the same thing with him. And I wanted, it gave, I said that he was like the best and I'm such a big fan. And he was like, oh my gosh, thank you. End of conversation.

• 53:03Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 53:04Speaker 03

Yeah. And Nathan Fielder and Larry David are, they're intense because it's like, it's their brain that you are so, like, you like their personality and like their brain, you know, not just like what they do. Like if they don't like me, then why would I like me?

• 53:19Jason Bateman?

I know, you wanna get in there.

• 53:22Sean Hayes?

  We're billing by the hour.

• 53:23Will Arnett?

  This is so revelatory.

• 53:24Speaker 03

  I want their approval.

• 53:27Jason Bateman?

All right, here's another spicy hot question. Hot Ones, you confessed to eating weird snacks on set. What is your all time strangest onset food combo that you now secretly stand by?

• 53:39Speaker 03

I have no idea what that means. A weird onset, I just eat what's at crafty.

• 53:44Jason Bateman?

  Right, exactly.

• 53:45Speaker 03

My brothers used to think that like my breakfasts were gross. Like I would have like Campbell's chicken noodle soup and like tuna salad.

• 53:50Sean Hayes?

  I get it.

• 53:51Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 53:52Speaker 03

  Wow.

• 53:53Will Arnett?

  Sean, hump the bricks.

• 53:55Jason Bateman?

How did you do on Hot Ones?

• 53:56Sean Hayes?

  It sounds delicious.

• 53:57Speaker 03

  Sean just like stood up.

• 53:58Will Arnett?

I did Hot Ones just recently myself, it just lasted.

• 54:01Jason Bateman?

How'd you do Willie? Did you get all the way through it?

• 54:03Will Arnett?

If I'm being honest, I was like, I was reluctant to do it because I don't like eating, I don't like hot sauce.

• 54:08Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, me neither.

• 54:09Will Arnett?

And so I'm like, okay, here we go. And then they go, Bateman was just on and he made it all the way through.

• 54:13Jason Bateman?

Yeah, but I was loaded up with like Pepto and Tums and.

• 54:18Speaker 03

  Oh, I threw up.

• 54:19Jason Bateman?

  You did?

• 54:20Sean Hayes?

  You did?

• 54:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:21Sean Hayes?

Wait, is it true that milk really helps that?

• 54:23Will Arnett?

  Yes, milk helps.

• 54:25Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 54:25Will Arnett?

It did help, but the third to last one, I forget, it was like, I forget it was called like The Bomb or something like that. It was so ridiculous. And I was rubbing the ice cream on my lips because I thought that my lips were gonna come off.

• 54:37Jason Bateman?

  That sounds gross.

• 54:38Sean Hayes?

  Sounds like a dream.

• 54:39Speaker 03

No, it's like truly frightening when it hits. It's overwhelming.

• 54:43Will Arnett?

  It was rough.

• 54:43Speaker 03

Like how am I gonna handle this situation?

• 54:45Jason Bateman?

When did you throw up? On the set there or when you got home?

• 54:47Speaker 03

No, I, so the only thing that soothed the burning was chugging ice water. So I think what happened was I drank so much ice water that I threw up.

• 54:56Jason Bateman?

Wow. This is the kind of torture we put ourselves through to sell our product. But actually, it was pretty fun.

• 55:02Will Arnett?

It was fun, he's a great, he's a super nice guy, Sean.

• 55:05Speaker 03

  He's a very good interviewer.

• 55:06Jason Bateman?

Right, he has very good questions.

• 55:08Will Arnett?

By the way, the questions are really good and they're really from out of left field. It made me laugh a couple of times how out of left field. And you're struggling with, your mouth is on fire.

• 55:17Jason Bateman?

And I love how like dry and robotic he is too. It's like it's fucking serious business.

• 55:22Speaker 03

  Is he eating with you?

• 55:23Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 55:23Jason Bateman?

  He's a robot.

• 55:24Speaker 03

He just doesn't react as much because he's used to it?

• 55:27Will Arnett?

  Yeah, he's used to it.

• 55:28Jason Bateman?

  He's made of titanium.

• 55:30Will Arnett?

It's insane. He actually kind of mirrors you, what I found. Like he eats the same way that you do, he takes the same sized bites that you do. And there's some, I guess there's comfort in that. It's almost like he's in it with you.

• 55:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:42Jason Bateman?

  Did you take just?

• 55:43Speaker 03

That poor guy, he said whenever he goes to restaurants, people send him chicken wings.

• 55:47Jason Bateman?

  Oh boy.

• 55:47Speaker 03

And it's like, and he obviously can't eat chicken wings.

• 55:50Will Arnett?

  Sean, dream.

• 55:52Sean Hayes?

  Send him over here, yeah.

• 55:54Jason Bateman?

All right, what about this? If fame disappeared tomorrow, Jen, what is the first thing that you would go out and do? That you can't do now because of getting recognized?

• 56:04Speaker 03

Oh, I don't, that doesn't really apply. I just do, I do stuff.

• 56:08Jason Bateman?

What about like, well, like, will you do like Disneyland?

• 56:11Speaker 03

Yeah, but I'll do Disney, I'll, I'll do it.

• 56:13Jason Bateman?

You just rush it? And then, so then what happens?

• 56:16Speaker 03

  I just rush it.

• 56:16Jason Bateman?

What happens if like a big crowd starts to gather around you and everybody wants a picture on their iPhones? Do you, do you indulge?

• 56:23Speaker 03

No, it never happens. And like, I would just leave. I think that bringing like a big security guard and like wearing a hat and all that stuff, that is...

• 56:30Will Arnett?

  Attracts attention.

• 56:31Speaker 03

But if, for the most part, I just get people like looking at me sideways, being like, she looks like that person.

• 56:39Will Arnett?

Yeah, you don't want to invite it.

• 56:40Speaker 03

So I would just do that.

• 56:41Will Arnett?

You don't want to invite, I remember hearing, this is, a guy told me once, this is not related, I can't believe I'm making this connection. But riding your bike in the city that you don't wear a helmet because, again, this is a terrible analogy, but I can't bail, I'm too deep.

• 57:00Will Arnett?

That when you ride, when you wear a helmet, you say to the other drivers that you're part of the system, that you're just another vehicle.

• 57:08Speaker 03

  I totally get that.

• 57:09Will Arnett?

But if you don't have a helmet that you recognize as a human, so when I ride my bike in the city, I never wear a helmet.

• 57:14Jason Bateman?

  Sounds like Thoreau again.

• 57:15Will Arnett?

You know who said it? Lorne Michaels, who's never ridden a bike in the city in his life. But he once said that to me, yeah.

• 57:22Speaker 03

Did he deliver it like it was a good joke? Or did he deliver it serious as a heart attack?

• 57:26Will Arnett?

No, he meant to, no, he said, wouldn't you put a helmet on? You're telling the other vehicles that you're in the game.

• 57:34Will Arnett?

Because I was considering starting to wear a helmet. He said, don't do it, he advised me.

• 57:38Jason Bateman?

So like, if you don't have a helmet on, then they'll, they'll be more careful around you, right?

• 57:42Will Arnett?

That's right, that's right, because they see that you're a human being.

• 57:45Speaker 03

I don't know why, but I find it weird when Canadians are funny.

• 57:51Jason Bateman?

Because there's so many of them that are funny.

• 57:53Speaker 03

  Well, there's Jim Carrey.

• 57:55Jason Bateman?

  There's Jim, there's Martin Short.

• 57:56Sean Hayes?

  Mike, Mike, Mike.

• 57:57Will Arnett?

Marty Short is one of the funny.

• 57:58Speaker 03

  Martin Short is, of course.

• 57:59Will Arnett?

  Of course.

• 57:59Speaker 03

Once you find out somebody's Canadian, you're like, of course. And I don't know what it is.

• 58:03Jason Bateman?

  John Candy.

• 58:04Will Arnett?

Marty, Marty Short might be one of the.

• 58:06Speaker 03

  John Candy is Canadian?

• 58:07Will Arnett?

  Of course.

• 58:08Speaker 03

John Candy definitely seems like he's from Chicago. Well, we know why.

• 58:11Will Arnett?

We were just talking about plane trades and other deals. Canada has a deep bench, if I can tell you.

• 58:17Speaker 03

  Deep bench?

• 58:18Will Arnett?

  Of funny people, yeah.

• 58:19Speaker 03

  Oh, of funny people.

• 58:20Will Arnett?

That's a hockey analogy, like a bench, like a, you know.

• 58:22Speaker 03

I guess I just like, there's, to me, there's no trauma in Canada. It's like you have free healthcare, you, the, your taxes pay for public schools.

• 58:30Sean Hayes?

  Everybody's so nice.

• 58:31Will Arnett?

Oh, we got so much trauma.

• 58:33Speaker 03

I feel like humor is formed from suffering. Maybe you're cold.

• 58:36Will Arnett?

  We just suck it up.

• 58:39Jason Bateman?

Before, wait, before we let her go, we've got, god damn it, we're in the last minute. We haven't even talked about the thing you're, you're, let's talk, I want to talk, Lynn Ramsey's one of my favorite directors ever. Can you please, okay, so Die My Love, right? Yes?

• 58:52Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 58:52Jason Bateman?

  Yeah?

• 58:53Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 58:53Jason Bateman?

That's the film, it's incredible, saw it, love it. Well, can you tell us anything about what I'm assuming was a magical experience with Lynn Ramsey?

• 59:04Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, it really was. She's, she, it, it started like before we got on set, she just kind of started like talking about this world and then writing these scenes and like, it wasn't necessarily like in chronological order, which was funky and cool. And then we got to, to Canada, to, it was Calgary, which was in.

• 59:23Jason Bateman?

Wherever that was, it was beautiful.

• 59:24Speaker 03

  What's the Ottawa province?

• 59:25Will Arnett?

  No, Alberta is.

• 59:27Speaker 03

  Alberta! And.

• 59:30Will Arnett?

I'm here for all your Canadian questions.

• 59:32Speaker 03

  Yeah, thank you.

• 59:32Will Arnett?

  You're welcome.

• 59:33Speaker 03

I, so, yeah, and then I, it was just, it was just really cool and great. She's just extremely instinctual. It's like kind of exactly what you want to have when you're like working with a notoriety like that, just like she's so.

• 59:45Jason Bateman?

You were incredible in that, and so was Robert Pattinson.

• 59:47Will Arnett?

I can't wait to see it.

• 59:48Jason Bateman?

  Oh, the movie's so great.

• 59:50Will Arnett?

I can't wait to see it.

• 59:51Jason Bateman?

  It's just beautiful, too.

• 59:52Will Arnett?

I can't wait to see it before Sean.

• 59:54Sean Hayes?

  I, I already saw it.

• 59:55Will Arnett?

  Really?

• 59:56Sean Hayes?

Do you have a top movie of all time for you, or top two?

• 59:58Jason Bateman?

  Oh, Sean.

• 59:59Speaker 03

Well, now, I mean, one battle after another was my favorite movie I've ever seen.

• 1:00:02Jason Bateman?

Incredible. What about, um, wait, you're a reality TV fan. Do you watch any of those with your husband? He doesn't, he doesn't get near him?

• 1:00:09Speaker 03

Um, he got near Vanderpump for a while, but now I lost him. Um, but yeah, I'm, I'm, I watch Southern Charm, Real Housewives of Salt Lake and Real Housewives of Beverly Hills now.

• 1:00:20Jason Bateman?

What about Below Deck? Do we, do we get, do we go Below Deck at all?

• 1:00:23Speaker 03

You know, I can't watch Below Deck because I cannot understand the different franchises of them. There, it's too confusing. I don't ever know which one is current. Is it Below Deck? Below Deck Met, Below Deck Australia. I don't know which one's happening now.

• 1:00:36Will Arnett?

You gotta be clear on those. You have to, there can't be confusion when you're in the Below Deck universe.

• 1:00:40Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 1:00:41Sean Hayes?

  Did you ever watch Traitors?

• 1:00:42Speaker 03

Like what happens if I confuse?

• 1:00:45Will Arnett?

  What would happen?

• 1:00:45Speaker 03

What region? I mean, I'm clearly passionate about provinces.

• 1:00:49Jason Bateman?

  Wait, Sean, what was that?

• 1:00:50Will Arnett?

  You're describing chaos.

• 1:00:51Jason Bateman?

  You ever watch Traitors?

• 1:00:52Sean Hayes?

  Traitors.

• 1:00:53Jason Bateman?

Oh, Traitors. Oh, wait, that's the one that was just in England, right?

• 1:00:57Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, it's so good. It's a, it's a, it's based on like-

• 1:00:59Will Arnett?

Where they play mafia, basically, JB, they play mafia.

• 1:01:01Jason Bateman?

And they're doing that in the States now too, right?

• 1:01:03Will Arnett?

Remember last year at New Year's, how much we played mafia every night?

• 1:01:06Jason Bateman?

  You were great at it.

• 1:01:07Will Arnett?

I had to run it every night because everybody else, and I had, so I couldn't even play. I had to run it every night.

• 1:01:13Jason Bateman?

You're, if, it wouldn't, it wouldn't have lasted without you. You were, you were a beacon.

• 1:01:17Speaker 03

Do you guys ever do bowls?

• 1:01:19Jason Bateman?

  Bowls?

• 1:01:20Will Arnett?

  What is it?

• 1:01:21Speaker 03

  Salad bowls?

• 1:01:21Jason Bateman?

  What's that?

• 1:01:22Speaker 03

Everybody writes down something that's familiar to everybody, like everybody would get it, you know, like Spider-Man, Donald Trump, like cheese.

• 1:01:29Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:29Speaker 03

And then you, um, put them, and then there's like stage one, which is you can say every, you can say a full sentence just without that word.

• 1:01:37Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:38Speaker 03

And then the second, you can just say one word and then the third is charades.

• 1:01:41Sean Hayes?

Yeah, some people call it celebrity or what do they call it?

• 1:01:43Speaker 03

Uh, it has a different name for everybody.

• 1:01:45Jason Bateman?

  Oh, that sounds very good.

• 1:01:47Sean Hayes?

So what, the first round you do, um, yeah, one, you get one sentence to describe it, then you put them all back in the bowl in the second round.

• 1:01:54Speaker 03

  And it's always the same.

• 1:01:55Sean Hayes?

  One word.

• 1:01:55Speaker 03

So then you started getting these inside jokes with.

• 1:01:58Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 1:01:59Speaker 03

You know, it's just like the same.

• 1:02:00Sean Hayes?

  It's very funny.

• 1:02:01Jason Bateman?

Shawnee, you used to have great game nights. What happened? What's going on?

• 1:02:04Sean Hayes?

  Too much, too much.

• 1:02:05Speaker 03

  I love game nights.

• 1:02:06Sean Hayes?

I see, a lot of people do.

• 1:02:07Speaker 03

  It's too much to host.

• 1:02:08Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it's too much to organize.

• 1:02:09Jason Bateman?

Let's get on down to Jamie and Nico's house and just fire up a big fat game night.

• 1:02:13Sean Hayes?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:14Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:14Speaker 03

  I'll fly in.

• 1:02:15Sean Hayes?

You know, it's game nights always happen where people are like into it and then you start it and then people kind of fall out because they get bored and then it's kind of-

• 1:02:21Will Arnett?

  Yeah, that's the bummer.

• 1:02:22Speaker 03

I'm gonna start doing Manjean with my girls on Thursday.

• 1:02:25Sean Hayes?

  I love Manjean.

• 1:02:26Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 1:02:26Speaker 03

I don't know how to play yet, but we're gonna learn.

• 1:02:27Sean Hayes?

  It's just a matching game.

• 1:02:28Jason Bateman?

Is that the one with the tiles?

• 1:02:29Sean Hayes?

Yeah, you just match the tiles, that's it.

• 1:02:31Jason Bateman?

  Oh. Huh.

• 1:02:32Sean Hayes?

  Those are the rules.

• 1:02:34Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 1:02:34Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:02:35Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, that's all.

• 1:02:36Jason Bateman?

That's how much of a commitment. Yeah. Too much.

• 1:02:39Sean Hayes?

  All right.

• 1:02:40Jason Bateman?

  Jennifer.

• 1:02:41Will Arnett?

  Jen.

• 1:02:41Speaker 03

  JB.

• 1:02:42Jason Bateman?

  Thank you.

• 1:02:43Speaker 03

  Sean.

• 1:02:44Jason Bateman?

  Um.

• 1:02:45Speaker 03

  Will.

• 1:02:45Jason Bateman?

  Next time you're out here.

• 1:02:47Speaker 03

  Will Shirt.

• 1:02:48Jason Bateman?

Doing your things. Thank you. Um, let us know and um, and we'll play some mahjong and some bowls. We'll do a game night at Sean's.

• 1:02:56Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, we'll do some bowls.

• 1:02:57Jason Bateman?

Yeah. Sean's gonna. Sean's gonna do some Pictionary.

• 1:03:00Speaker 03

Sean, I'll help you organize and I'll come early and we can set up appetizers and stuff.

• 1:03:04Sean Hayes?

Yeah, right? Crude it change bullshit.

• 1:03:06Speaker 03

Yeah, then I can like be.

• 1:03:07Jason Bateman?

Don't even know where they're already out. The appetizers are already out.

• 1:03:11Sean Hayes?

Pop darts just in a row.

• 1:03:12Jason Bateman?

Um. Sean. Jen, thank you very, very much for doing that.

• 1:03:16Will Arnett?

  Thank you.

• 1:03:17Speaker 03

  Thank you guys.

• 1:03:18Sean Hayes?

So nice to finally meet you.

• 1:03:19Will Arnett?

  Jennifer Lawrence.

• 1:03:20Speaker 03

This is lovely. Thank you for having me.

• 1:03:22Jason Bateman?

Um, all right, have a great rest of the day.

• 1:03:24Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:25Jason Bateman?

And um, and have a great holiday.

• 1:03:27Speaker 03

  All right, thank you.

• 1:03:28Jason Bateman?

  Bye.

• 1:03:29Speaker 03

  Bye guys.

• 1:03:30Jason Bateman?

  Bye, bye, bye.

• 1:03:30Will Arnett?

  Bye, bye, jail.

• 1:03:32Speaker 03

  Bye.

• 1:03:34Jason Bateman?

  Uh, that's Jennifer Lawrence.

• 1:03:36Will Arnett?

That's Jennifer was supposed to be on the big stage at the Hollywood Bowl.

• 1:03:40Jason Bateman?

  I know.

• 1:03:41Will Arnett?

  She got rained out.

• 1:03:42Jason Bateman?

We got it, we got it, we got to reschedule that.

• 1:03:43Will Arnett?

And yet we still, and then we had her, and then we, and then we just had her on here, which was amazing, which was great.

• 1:03:48Sean Hayes?

I know, and when I, when I found out that that was, so it was like after it got canceled, I was like, oh, it was Jennifer Lawrence. I was so excited.

• 1:03:53Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 1:03:54Sean Hayes?

And then, um, and here she is.

• 1:03:55Jason Bateman?

Now, did you guys, you guys did not know it was her?

• 1:03:58Will Arnett?

  Not until after.

• 1:03:59Sean Hayes?

  No idea.

• 1:03:59Will Arnett?

  No.

• 1:04:00Jason Bateman?

  Not until after.

• 1:04:00Will Arnett?

  I had no idea.

• 1:04:01Jason Bateman?

And I knew, I knew it was gonna be Jeremy Allen White, uh, a week beforehand.

• 1:04:05Will Arnett?

  You did?

• 1:04:05Sean Hayes?

  Oh, right, because, right.

• 1:04:06Jason Bateman?

Yeah, because his, his agent mentioned it at some thing I was at.

• 1:04:09Will Arnett?

  Oh, right, right.

• 1:04:10Jason Bateman?

Um, but he, but listen, it, not his fault, happens all the time.

• 1:04:13Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah, of course.

• 1:04:14Jason Bateman?

Um, but um, yeah, that would have been, that would have been, that would have been fun.

• 1:04:18Will Arnett?

I can't believe it took us so long to have her on, on.

• 1:04:21Sean Hayes?

I know. She's one of those like, oh.

• 1:04:22Will Arnett?

On the PK, I know, she's, she's sort of like.

• 1:04:24Sean Hayes?

She was on my list too.

• 1:04:26Jason Bateman?

  Yep, yeah, she's fantastic.

• 1:04:28Sean Hayes?

She is, a lot of, a lot of success, uh, quickly, but she handles it well.

• 1:04:32Jason Bateman?

Very well. She's done so many great things. She's been so good and so many things. She's been in a movie every year for the last 20 years. I was looking on, on her thing. Every single year. Is that right, eh? Yeah. Is that right, eh? Yeah. Um, and then, uh, so, uh, Die My Love is out now and then, and then the, uh, Hunger Games, next Hunger Games thing, I think is coming out, uh, middle of next year.

• 1:04:54Sean Hayes?

  How about that?

• 1:04:55Jason Bateman?

  Um.

• 1:04:55Will Arnett?

  That's.

• 1:04:57Will Arnett?

  You know it.

• 1:04:58Jason Bateman?

  Well, you go ahead, Sean.

• 1:04:59Will Arnett?

You know what she did. "My Love" coming out. Thank God. I mean, it's a good title. Thank God it wasn't titled. Bye, my love. That's exactly what I was gonna do.
