This episode of Smartless is sponsored by Google Book. So the other day, I wanted to make invitations for my dog Ricky's birthday party. And I've got three things open on my laptop. An adorable photo of Ricky, a picture of a birthday cake, and the RSVP details. Thing is, as much as I look like one, I'm not a canine birthday party invitation designer. That's where Google Book comes in. It's a whole new kind of laptop with a feature called Magic Pointer. I just click the photos and different elements on my screen, and boom, Magic Pointer designs a customized birthday party invitation for Ricky. • 2:37Will Arnett?

Can I just be shameless and say what I'm actually really excited for? Can I just say it?

• 2:42Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 2:42Will Arnett?

I'm really excited for our live show.

• 2:44Jason Bateman?

  Oh.

• 2:45Will Arnett?

  I'm nervous. I'm nervous.

• 2:46Jason Bateman?

  I always get nervous.

• 2:47Will Arnett?

Are you guys nervous about it?

• 2:48Jason Bateman?

You're talking about the one that's coming up November 15th out there at the Hollywood Bowl? I'm very nervous about it.

• 2:53Will Arnett?

That's the one where people can go to smartless.com/live to get tickets. That's the one I'm talking about.

• 2:57Jason Bateman?

  Wait, what's the...

• 2:58Will Arnett?

  It's smartless.com/live.

• 3:00Jason Bateman?

Is where I would go if I wanted to buy a ticket.

• 3:02Will Arnett?

That's where you'd go if you wanted. But anyway, I'm nervous about it because it's gonna be the Hollywood Bowl and we got a couple of guests.

• 3:07Jason Bateman?

I had a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios for...

• 3:10Will Arnett?

Okay, great. All right, let's get to an all-new Smartless.

• 3:29Jason Bateman?

What do you guys call it when you say, you know, when you're scheduling something, you're like, "I can't, I've got, I've got, I've got a, I'm doing a pod, I'm doing a record."

• 3:38Will Arnett?

  I'm gonna record.

• 3:39Jason Bateman?

How do you refer to what we're doing right now when you talk to other people? I just record. I say record. I say record.

• 3:44Will Arnett?

I say record, or sometimes, or I'll say, "I have to record a Smartless." I got a Smartless.

• 3:49Jason Bateman?

It's a long version. What do you say? I've said, I've said "pod" a couple of times and it just feels terrible.

• 3:56Will Arnett?

Yeah, of course it does. Well, it sounds terrible.

• 3:58Jason Bateman?

Yeah. Hey, what about the three of us get to put our chest and faces on each other on Sunday? For the first time in forever. What do you, what do you mean? We're all gonna have dinner on Sunday?

• 4:09Will Arnett?

  Sunday night.

• 4:09Jason Bateman?

Yeah. All right, good. I don't think Amanda, Amanda's going, right? Amanda's not, so I actually have an out. But I was thinking, since you guys are gonna be there. Well, you better be there, yeah, for sure.

• 4:18Will Arnett?

I'm gonna be solo too this Sunday, so it's gonna be...

• 4:20Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 4:21Will Arnett?

So we're gonna have, yeah. Jason, will you be?

• 4:23Jason Bateman?

Yeah, do you want me to wear something special?

• 4:27Will Arnett?

I want you to pick me up. I want you to pick and open my door.

• 4:30Jason Bateman?

And I'm gonna wear that thing that you.

• 4:32Will Arnett?

Yep, that I was asked for.

• 4:33Jason Bateman?

No, I got it. No, I got it.

• 4:37Sean Hayes?

Hey, we saw, uh, we missed you last night. I was, we, I was over there, Willie, last night with Jay.

• 4:42Will Arnett?

  You were?

• 4:43Sean Hayes?

Yeah, just for a quick bite.

• 4:44Jason Bateman?

  Quick bite?

• 4:45Will Arnett?

  I was in.

• 4:45Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it was good. It was good.

• 4:48Will Arnett?

Okay, okay, okay. Okay, good. So you guys had dinner. Well, again, well, we're having dinner tonight.

• 4:53Sean Hayes?

That's right. Me and Willie are having dinner.

• 4:54Will Arnett?

  So.

• 4:55Jason Bateman?

You guys gonna go to Jar?

• 4:56Will Arnett?

  Doesn't matter.

• 4:57Sean Hayes?

  Yes. How did you know?

• 4:58Jason Bateman?

  Truly?

• 4:58Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 4:59Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 5:00Sean Hayes?

You wanna go or no? Well. Nah, we're gonna see each other Sunday.

• 5:04Will Arnett?

  You can come. Come.

• 5:06Jason Bateman?

  Thank you.

• 5:07Will Arnett?

  It's gonna be fun.

• 5:08Sean Hayes?

Um, yeah, because I haven't hung out with Carolyn yet, really. So, oh, sorry, can I say that?

• 5:12Will Arnett?

  Oh, boy.

• 5:13Jason Bateman?

Oh, well, the internet's saying it, so I think we can.

• 5:16Will Arnett?

  I don't know.

• 5:18Sean Hayes?

Um, wait, what did we, what did we talk about last night, Jay? Oh, yeah. We talked about, hey, Will, have you seen this alter ego thing I was talking about at the table? Where it's a new device, it's like an AI device, and you put it in the back of your ear.

• 5:32Jason Bateman?

Yeah, listen to this. This sounds like a nightmare.

• 5:34Sean Hayes?

And all, whenever you, whatever you think of, it translates into, uh.

• 5:40Jason Bateman?

  Text.

• 5:40Sean Hayes?

  Audio.

• 5:41Jason Bateman?

  Audio.

• 5:41Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, audio text.

• 5:42Jason Bateman?

Can you imagine that? Like, basically having a microphone on in your brain?

• 5:46Will Arnett?

  That's, that's a nightmare.

• 5:47Sean Hayes?

Yeah. But I mean, only if you turn it on, like, you, you don't, it's not like you do.

• 5:51Jason Bateman?

I would, I would venture to say people would pay thousands and thousands of dollars to have that eliminated if that was something that was stuck on.

• 5:59Will Arnett?

Most people. Imagine if most things thoughts were vocalized, the jails would be full.

• 6:04Jason Bateman?

And they'd empty their accounts to get rid of it.

• 6:07Sean Hayes?

Yeah, but I mean, it's, it's voluntary. You don't, it's not like stuck to your head.

• 6:11Jason Bateman?

No, I understand that. I'm just saying they're gonna have a tough time, uh.

• 6:14Will Arnett?

Kill JB, kill JB, kill JB, kill JB.

• 6:17Jason Bateman?

Pay us money for this new device. That just sounds like a, like a.

• 6:21Will Arnett?

I hope Jason misses this pod. I hope Jason misses this pod.

• 6:26Sean Hayes?

Hey, did I, did I leave too abruptly last night?

• 6:29Jason Bateman?

No, you actually triggered a mass exodus, which was fantastic. We all left right after that. It was, I, I, you know me.

• 6:35Will Arnett?

Wait, wait, what do you mean we all? How many, what, what are we talking about?

• 6:38Jason Bateman?

  Fifteen, twenty, twenty-five people?

• 6:39Sean Hayes?

No, it was like eight, six people, eight people.

• 6:42Will Arnett?

What? Hang on a se- wait a second, pump the brakes. What was I left out of?

• 6:46Jason Bateman?

This was, this was a, this was a specific little bite, um, uh.

• 6:51Sean Hayes?

It's a bite and smile. It was a bite and smile.

• 6:54Will Arnett?

And I'm, and I don't know these people.

• 6:55Jason Bateman?

Exactly. Not, not very well at all.

• 6:58Will Arnett?

  Oh, okay.

• 6:59Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, that's right.

• 7:00Jason Bateman?

But Sean, yeah. You have a guest today.

• 7:03Sean Hayes?

I do, I know. We're getting, we're gonna get right to it. I was gonna share one more thing, but that, no.

• 7:07Will Arnett?

I'd love to hear it too.

• 7:08Jason Bateman?

I'd love to. You worked on material. Go ahead.

• 7:09Sean Hayes?

No, it's not. It's, it's, uh, okay, here we go.

• 7:12Will Arnett?

No, no, no, wait, wait, wait, wait. I wanna hear what you're saying.

• 7:14Sean Hayes?

No, no, it was just that, it was that topic, that whole thing about, you know, men and women and like sexual opportunities. So like, I asked all the women at the table, like if a, if a guy came to the door and that was the best looking guy in the world, would you, and, and he propositioned you, whether, you know, politely or impolitely, whatever it was, just based on looks, would you go for it? And of course unanimously, every girl around the table was like, no, I would not, I would never do that.

• 7:41Jason Bateman?

You can be much more specific than that. You can, you can, you can say what the actual thing was.

• 7:46Sean Hayes?

Well, it was, it was, it was like if, if a guy, if a, if a like drop dead gorgeous unbelievable guy was at your door and he just like exposed himself, but not really like, but like in a, in a, or answered in a robe or something. And of course, every girl was like, no, that's disgusting. That's weird and bizarre and not. And then, but conversely, all the gay guys and the straight guys were like, yeah, I would totally go for that.

• 8:10Sean Hayes?

  You know what I mean?

• 8:11Jason Bateman?

Meaning if it was the opposite, if the door opened and a woman had her robe open.

• 8:16Sean Hayes?

  Right.

• 8:16Jason Bateman?

The guy would say, oh yeah, cool if I come in?

• 8:19Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 8:20Jason Bateman?

You know, as opposed to the, and I guess Sean was making a, a, a statement about the difference in, uh, sexes.

• 8:27Will Arnett?

It reminds me, it reminds me of this old joke that my grandfather had, and this is almost a dad joke, but it's worse, it's a grandfather joke, which is a guy's on a desert island. And he's there by himself for years and years and years. And all of a sudden, this beautiful woman comes out of the surf and she's got her, she's wearing a wet suit. And she says, uh, when was the last time you had a nice cold beer? And he's like, oh, my God, it's been forever. And she reaches in her wet suit, pulls out a beer, and he chugs it down. And she goes, when was the last time that you had a smoke? And he's like, oh, years. And she's like, pulls out a cigarette lighter. And he's like, oh, my God, it's incredible. And then she looks at him and she goes, when was the last time you played around? And he goes, you got golf clubs in there?

• 9:08Sean Hayes?

  That's a good one.

• 9:09Will Arnett?

  It's a grandfather joke.

• 9:10Sean Hayes?

  Perfect segue.

• 9:11Jason Bateman?

But Shawnee told me a great grandfather joke, a granddad joke. It was really dad joke. I was like, yeah.

• 9:17Sean Hayes?

  Was it the cat?

• 9:18Jason Bateman?

  Yeah. How do, uh?

• 9:19Will Arnett?

  Maybe Shawnee should tell it.

• 9:22Jason Bateman?

I kind of punched up the reading a little bit.

• 9:24Sean Hayes?

Okay, go ahead, go ahead, go ahead.

• 9:26Jason Bateman?

Uh, what, yeah, so what, uh?

• 9:31Sean Hayes?

No, it's what is it? How does a cat like at stake?

• 9:35Jason Bateman?

  Rare.

• 9:41Sean Hayes?

I can't even. It's not, it's so not even funny. All right.

• 9:45Jason Bateman?

You gotta have the little tiny claws up when you do it, too.

• 9:48Sean Hayes?

  Oh, that'll help it.

• 9:55Jason Bateman?

  Guys, we're so silly.

• 9:57Sean Hayes?

We're over. We're over time already. All right, look, look, we got a guy, we got a guy here.

• 10:02Will Arnett?

We'll just thank our guest now.

• 10:04Jason Bateman?

  We'll apologize first.

• 10:06Sean Hayes?

He's a big deal, guys. I might geek out a little bit. I'm a huge fan. He was born in Guatemala, and then he kind of ping ponged around the United States as a kid. While his dad finished his medical residencies, he almost joined the Marines before making a sharp pivot to Juilliard. He spent most of his teens in Florida playing bass and singing in a ska punk band, including when that opened for Green Day. But now he's one of Hollywood's most versatile actors, playing everything from a folk singer, mad genius tech guy, a rebel pilot, a superhero, a Shakespearean royalty. He's ridiculously talented, absolute joy to watch, one of my favorite actors of all time, Oscar Isaac.

• 10:42Will Arnett?

  Oscar Isaac.

• 10:44Sean Hayes?

  Oscar.

• 10:46Jason Bateman?

  Absolutely stumped. Oscar Isaac.

• 10:50Sean Hayes?

  See the claws help?

• 10:52Speaker 06

I'm so telling my, my six-year-old this joke when he was told in school today.

• 10:57Jason Bateman?

Well, you know what? Okay, we're rolling, speed and action. Let's, let's see your reading on rare.

• 11:06Sean Hayes?

  He's like, I can't.

• 11:07Jason Bateman?

It's gonna be hard to beat, man.

• 11:10Jason Bateman?

I think the claws are definitely necessary. You'd need the little kitten claws. Yeah, Sean's got great dad jokes. You got any dad jokes, Oscar?

• 11:19Speaker 06

No, I, my heart's pounding. You guys are so fast and so funny.

• 11:23Jason Bateman?

  No, boring.

• 11:24Speaker 06

And so intimidating with your speed of wit.

• 11:27Jason Bateman?

  Please.

• 11:28Will Arnett?

Oh, no, no, no. You should read what people say about me on this thing. They're so sick of me.

• 11:33Jason Bateman?

No, no. I'm sick of me. Way Oscar pleasure.

• 11:37Speaker 06

Not me, I'm really happy. You know, because there was a moment there, I remember during the pandemic where I think there was a moment where it's like, oh, can I come and do the show way back then?

• 11:47Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 11:48Speaker 06

And I was stuck down there, yeah.

• 11:49Sean Hayes?

You've been on my list to be on the show since day one.

• 11:52Will Arnett?

Yeah, you've been on my list.

• 11:53Jason Bateman?

But you have not stopped working on the greatest things

• 11:55Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 11:55Jason Bateman?

that this business has to offer since then and before.

• 11:58Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 11:59Jason Bateman?

Well done. I'm so, so happy. Every time I see you in something, I get more of you.

• 12:04Speaker 06

  Thanks, Jason.

• 12:04Sean Hayes?

And I just watched Frankenstein last night. It's.

• 12:07Speaker 06

  You did?

• 12:08Will Arnett?

  You did?

• 12:08Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 12:08Speaker 06

Wait a second, you got home from the dinner and watched Frankenstein?

• 12:12Sean Hayes?

No, I'm sorry, during the day yesterday, not last night.

• 12:14Speaker 06

Oh, thanks for the phone call.

• 12:17Sean Hayes?

But wait, but, and we're gonna get to that, but Oscar.

• 12:20Will Arnett?

  Sure, okay.

• 12:20Sean Hayes?

Holy moly, man. That, your performance was incredible.

• 12:25Will Arnett?

  I know, I'm so psyched.

• 12:27Sean Hayes?

I mean, just incredible. I don't know how you do it, but anyway. Listen, thanks for being here. I'm guessing when we met a couple of years ago, you could probably feel what a big fan I was.

• 12:38Will Arnett?

Oh, no, Oscar, you describe it from your side, what happened. And be honest.

• 12:43Speaker 06

It was at the, the awards dinner.

• 12:46Sean Hayes?

Yeah, or no, it was, it was, I think before that, it was the Lin-Manuel Miranda kind of things that he does in the street.

• 12:52Speaker 06

  Right.

• 12:53Sean Hayes?

Right? And then we all had to like go out. If you're in a show.

• 12:55Will Arnett?

He's erased that. It turns out he's erased that from his memory.

• 12:59Speaker 06

I have a notoriously terrible memory with all things. Especially like an over-stimulated moment like that, which was insane.

• 13:06Sean Hayes?

Yeah, I know, me too. I'm like, so.

• 13:08Speaker 06

But I remember you were so sweet at the, what was the award? I don't even remember what the.

• 13:13Sean Hayes?

  Tony Awards?

• 13:13Speaker 06

No, no, no, it was. Before that, where everybody kind of has a dinner on a stage.

• 13:17Sean Hayes?

Oh, yeah. How awkward was that?

• 13:19Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, there's a crowd and then we're all on stage eating.

• 13:22Sean Hayes?

  Like we're on display?

• 13:24Speaker 06

Yeah, and then you came over and said hi.

• 13:27Will Arnett?

Wait, wait, wait, sorry, I just want to put it. So you're all on stage eating and there's a crowd in the theater?

• 13:33Sean Hayes?

  Watching you.

• 13:34Speaker 06

  Well, they're eating too, right?

• 13:36Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 13:36Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 13:37Speaker 06

  Right?

• 13:37Sean Hayes?

  I think so. I don't remember.

• 13:40Jason Bateman?

  Meals on the last?

• 13:41Sean Hayes?

  I couldn't see them. I couldn't see them.

• 13:43Speaker 06

You can't really see them because there's lots of lights on.

• 13:45Will Arnett?

I mean, this is a new kind of dinner theater where everybody's eating, including the cast.

• 13:49Jason Bateman?

And then let's get to Sean coming over and doing the offensive, whatever it was.

• 13:54Speaker 06

  I'm sure it was.

• 13:56Will Arnett?

Was it about Dune? Was it about, what was it about?

• 13:58Speaker 06

Star Wars. Maybe it was a Star Wars thing, but we were on, you know, we were across the street from each other.

• 14:04Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 14:05Speaker 06

You know, you were doing Oscar, you'd be triumphant, the much celebrated play. I was doing the marginally tolerated play across the way, Sidney Brewstein.

• 14:17Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 14:18Speaker 06

And it was cool to be up there. That was my first time doing Broadway and it was kind of by happenstance.

• 14:23Sean Hayes?

  Really?

• 14:24Speaker 06

  Yeah, yeah, because we were.

• 14:25Sean Hayes?

  What about Hamlet?

• 14:26Speaker 06

  That was at the Public.

• 14:28Sean Hayes?

  Oh, I didn't know that.

• 14:29Jason Bateman?

  Which is what, technically off-Broadway?

• 14:31Speaker 06

  Yeah, that's off-Broadway.

• 14:33Sean Hayes?

Yeah, but anyway, I just, you know, huge fan. But I want to talk about, I had no idea you played instruments and like inside, oh my god.

• 14:44Speaker 06

  Luminous.

• 14:44Sean Hayes?

  Inside, yeah, Luminous.

• 14:46Jason Bateman?

  Incredible.

• 14:47Sean Hayes?

Is that you really playing in the movie too?

• 14:50Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 14:50Sean Hayes?

And was that a requirement that Coen Brothers wanted?

• 14:52Speaker 06

They did. They actually were mostly, at first they were just auditioning musicians.

• 14:58Sean Hayes?

I have no idea you were a musician. That's so crazy.

• 15:00Speaker 06

Yeah, so I played, you know, I mean, I didn't play folk music necessarily or like that kind of style. And so when I knew, when I heard that they were gonna be auditioning for it, I just really went in hardcore on learning like Travis picking and doing all that and it was, yeah.

• 15:17Will Arnett?

  What's Travis picking?

• 15:19Speaker 06

Travis picking is kind of like, it's almost like a rag time on piano where, you know, the left hand is doing the bassline and the right hand is doing the melody.

• 15:28Will Arnett?

  Sean, can you do that?

• 15:30Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, it's called stride piano.

• 15:31Speaker 06

Yeah, stride piano, yeah. So you're kind of doing that with a guitar where the thumb is doing the bassline.

• 15:36Sean Hayes?

  Oh, really?

• 15:37Speaker 06

And these guys are just playing the melody.

• 15:38Jason Bateman?

  Oh, my god.

• 15:39Sean Hayes?

  Difficult?

• 15:41Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, it's kind of like, uh, yeah, it's like, almost like the drumming where you have to kind of get some separation between.

• 15:47Will Arnett?

Jason, I saw you drumming in a music video yesterday. Is that, uh, do you want to comment on that?

• 15:51Jason Bateman?

  What?

• 15:53Jason Bateman?

  What is that?

• 15:54Speaker 06

Wait, was it, uh, was it the, uh, um, uh?

• 15:58Will Arnett?

It must have been a Black Rabbit adjacent music.

• 16:01Speaker 06

  Oh, right. Oh, that. Yes.

• 16:02Will Arnett?

Yeah, it just popped up yesterday and I just saw you hammering away on the skins.

• 16:06Speaker 06

  On your Instagram?

• 16:07Will Arnett?

  On my Instagram.

• 16:08Jason Bateman?

  I didn't see that.

• 16:09Speaker 06

Yeah, it's a crazy. I saw the first episode of that. You're so great in it. Well, thank you, man. It's like you're so kind of, so effortless.

• 16:15Will Arnett?

Can I, can I tell you last night, I, I haven't, I haven't started yet because I want to have a, I, I want to binge it all in a row. I think I'm going to watch it this weekend. And, and I had, uh, Bradley texted me last night. He watched till, the final text was at 3:30, uh, this morning.

• 16:29Speaker 06

He sent me this to Nice Test.

• 16:30Will Arnett?

Saying, "I just finished Black Rabbit. It's incredible. It's unbelievable." And then he called me this morning. He's like, Bateman, literally, I'm not, this is not exaggerating, Bateman is an incredible actor. I can, yeah, I know.

• 16:42Speaker 06

Oh, fuck. That scene in the car with the, with the coins and the reaction to the gun. Be like, "Get it out of my face." It was so, it was so funny and real. It was so great.

• 16:51Jason Bateman?

  I love that.

• 16:52Speaker 06

  He's so good.

• 16:53Jason Bateman?

Oscar, back to you. I want to talk about your memory because I'm wondering if I have Alzheimer's or is it, is it just us actors that, well, although Will is an anomaly. Yeah. He can remember everything. He's Mary Lou Henner's brother. Um, but do you think that our brains have morphed into a one-trick pony where we can just remember lines? And everything else, it decides, I can't, I can't have this. And it, it self edits things that are not, uh, going to our bottom line.

• 17:23Speaker 06

Like, I still, I still know all these Shakespeare monologues, but I can't, I think it's a, I think it's like, um, maybe it's like this anxiety, the moment there's even a slight doubt about a memory, it just erases. Or a person's name or, or anything. Like, the second there's a hesitation, it goes.

• 17:41Jason Bateman?

Do you have face blindness at all? I have a little bit of that. Where you're just like. I do. Where I'm just like, Scotty, my husband Scotty's like, "You've met that person like 20 times." I'm like, "Really?" And it's horrible. It's a horrible thing.

• 17:53Speaker 06

I think it is that thing. It's like the, it's like a hiccup that happens and then you're like, ah, it's like a paralysis.

• 17:59Will Arnett?

Yeah, I have this, I have a good memory, but I do have that too, Sean. It's not face blindness, but I can't remember. People say we met, or we know each other, or we did a thing like that. Part of my brain is completely cut off, but I can remember.

• 18:11Jason Bateman?

But like, you know, like, February of 2003, you can remember.

• 18:17Will Arnett?

Yeah, February 2003, February 2003, I auditioned for, for Arrested Development. And that was in February.

• 18:26Jason Bateman?

How would you? Jesus, like, but like November 2018, you probably know what was going on.

• 18:31Will Arnett?

Yeah, I do. November 2018, I went to England for six days.

• 18:35Jason Bateman?

  That's fucking crazy.

• 18:37Speaker 06

  Nuts.

• 18:37Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 18:38Jason Bateman?

That is crazy. I don't get that. God, the brain is amazing.

• 18:41Will Arnett?

But then there are certain parts of it that I, that I can't remember. And I can also remember dialogue as well, Oscar. And I can remember also through, I guess from like voiceover stuff over the years, I can remember copy from voiceover campaigns that I did 30 years ago.

• 18:56Jason Bateman?

Here comes the GMC tie-in, guys.

• 18:57Will Arnett?

Well, no, no, no, I mean, GMC, I did it this morning. I did it this morning. I did it this morning.

• 19:02Jason Bateman?

Was anything professional grade this morning?

• 19:03Will Arnett?

Well, no, but you can get 0% and all, 2025 GMC Terrain AT.

• 19:07Jason Bateman?

  Good lord.

• 19:08Will Arnett?

  That river doesn't damn itself.

• 19:09Jason Bateman?

Okay, Oscar, I want to talk about your, so not, not only did I not know that you played in a band and sang, in a band, in a band called The Worms? Right?

• 19:19Speaker 06

One of the names of the band.

• 19:21Jason Bateman?

The Worms? What kind of music was it?

• 19:23Speaker 06

  ska.

• 19:24Jason Bateman?

Yeah, it was like ska punk, right? Oh, boy, I can smell the weed from here. There we go.

• 19:29Speaker 06

This was before, I wasn't drinking or like, I didn't drink alcohol till like 24 years old. So I was like, I was straight edge.

• 19:35Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 19:35Will Arnett?

  Oh, wow.

• 19:36Speaker 06

I was, yeah, like I didn't, so I was always the odd one out.

• 19:40Will Arnett?

But how did you go, how did you do that thing where you, because Sean said it in the intro, in eloquently, that you were in a band and you were in ska bands and that, and then you all of a sudden go to Juilliard? Was that one day, like, you're like, hey, guys, I'm out of the band, I'm going to Juilliard, like, I'm not kind of?

• 19:58Jason Bateman?

  Really? Really?

• 19:58Will Arnett?

  For real?

• 19:59Speaker 06

Well, a little bit. It was, but you got it straight from Marines to Juilliard, which was, it was, um, I was, yeah, yeah, I mean, a little bit.

• 20:08Jason Bateman?

Wait, were you driving a moped with a raccoon tail on it when you were playing in the band?

• 20:13Speaker 06

  And suspenders?

• 20:14Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 20:15Speaker 06

  Really?

• 20:15Sean Hayes?

  I'll bet you were.

• 20:16Speaker 06

  I love, I remember those.

• 20:18Will Arnett?

How many times have you seen Quadrophenia? No, sorry, keep going.

• 20:22Speaker 06

Yeah, no, I had graduated high school. I was in this different band called The Blinking Underdogs. And, uh, and we, uh,

• 20:31Sean Hayes?

Surprise that cleared. No one had that, huh?

• 20:33Speaker 06

Nobody had it. They had The Blinkers, they had The Underdogs, but they didn't have The Blinking.

• 20:38Sean Hayes?

And just so you know, Oscar, I was in a band called Sounds From The Stairs. So it's all, all the names are, so keep going.

• 20:46Sean Hayes?

  Blinking Underdogs.

• 20:47Speaker 06

Pretty good. So many different band names. But, but, uh, but yeah, and so I came up to New York to do this off, off, off, off Broadway play.

• 20:56Will Arnett?

While you were, while you were in the band?

• 20:58Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, and we were touring, but Florida, we didn't really get out of Florida. And this was kind of as the third wave was cresting and kind of coming down of ska, right? And, uh,

• 21:10Sean Hayes?

And when, when, when did you start Closet Heterosexuals? That was the third band.

• 21:14Speaker 06

That was, that was before ska. That was hardcore. That was a hardcore band.

• 21:18Sean Hayes?

Okay. That was hardcore. Okay, got it.

• 21:21Speaker 06

  C.H.

• 21:21Sean Hayes?

That's good. C.H., is that what you called it? And now you, do you still collect guitars? Cause I know you collect guitars.

• 21:27Will Arnett?

Well, wait, Sean, Sean, he's telling you a story about how he went to New York to do the play. What are we doing over here?

• 21:31Speaker 06

Well, no, I went to do the play and then I was up there and I passed by Juilliard and I was like, ah, Juilliard, let me, let me go in there and, and, and see, see what's up. And I asked,

• 21:39Will Arnett?

  Come on.

• 21:39Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah. And I asked for an application. And they said that the deadline was due, uh, already. It was, this was like a Tuesday and it had been due Friday. And I kind of like schmoozed the lady and I was like, can I just take it back? And, and she's like, well, take it, maybe you could turn it in next, next year. And I went home that night and I filled it all out and I came back the next day and she took it and like, you know, postdated or whatever it is.

• 22:03Sean Hayes?

What else did you have to do to get it? Was there, was there an audition process?

• 22:06Speaker 06

Yeah, then there was a, then there was a whole audition process. Well, I had, I had to come back and

• 22:12Sean Hayes?

  Do like a monologue?

• 22:13Speaker 06

Do a couple monologues and do like a movement class and a dance belt. And uh...

• 22:19Sean Hayes?

Wear a dance belt or why do you have to wear a dance belt?

• 22:22Jason Bateman?

  Did you ever...

• 22:23Will Arnett?

Luckily you had that rare dance belt collection.

• 22:26Jason Bateman?

  Did you...

• 22:26Speaker 06

I don't have guitars, but I have a great dance belt collection.

• 22:29Will Arnett?

  Sure.

• 22:30Jason Bateman?

Were you able to confirm that the other applicants had to wear the dance belt?

• 22:34Speaker 06

The funny thing, no, the dance belt thing actually was not about the audition, but the first day of when you got in, they're like, this is what you have to do. And I remember I went in with my dance belt and nobody else had put on a dance belt.

• 22:46Jason Bateman?

We got another one! Got him!

• 22:50Sean Hayes?

Why would you put a dance belt on just for a monologue?

• 22:54Speaker 06

  Because that's my craft.

• 22:55Sean Hayes?

Okay, I got it. I got it.

• 22:56Jason Bateman?

  No question.

• 22:58Sean Hayes?

  We'll be right back.

• 23:02Sean Hayes?

• 26:42Sean Hayes?

  season.

• 26:47Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 26:50Sean Hayes?

All right, so Will's point, okay, so, but how did you, where did you? So you were in this band, but you always had this kind of inkling to act in like-

• 26:58Speaker 06

Yeah, I was doing plays. I was doing plays in Miami as well. So I was doing both at the same time.

• 27:02Sean Hayes?

And where did the Marines come in?

• 27:05Speaker 06

That was the guy, the sax player of The Worms. He and I just got really got, his dad was a Navy SEAL, and so we started talking about going, going in, being, you know, getting like buff and, you know, and just like going in on the buddy system, because you could do the buddy system at that time.

• 27:25Sean Hayes?

Which is what? What's the buddy system?

• 27:27Speaker 06

The buddy system is that you go in with a buddy, and then you get to do all of basic training with your pal, with your buddy. You get to do the whole thing. It's like, that sounds great.

• 27:35Sean Hayes?

It just sounds rad. I mean, that's real man stuff.

• 27:37Speaker 06

It sounds so fun, right? You're gonna do pull-ups and push-ups and all this stuff. It's gonna be great.

• 27:41Will Arnett?

And the thought that you even thought that you could, like, I would never occur to me, I wouldn't even look it up, because I'd be like, I'm not getting anywhere close to that.

• 27:49Sean Hayes?

Right, you're gonna get kicked out when you enter the barracks.

• 27:52Speaker 06

But then they're like, and then I said, you know, oh, and I'll go in for combat photography. I had watched, you know, Full Metal Jacket, and I'm like, yeah, like, be a combat photographer. And, and so, we started doing the training, like, you would meet up every weekend and start like doing the training with some of the Marines, like, early training.

• 28:11Sean Hayes?

  So you did that?

• 28:12Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, and I even went and I did the, you go to like a hotel, and they do all like your examinations and health stuff, and you take your first oath, and there's like a second oath for you to do. And then I, and when I first signed up, I remember they gave me a pamphlet that had all like the famous Marines, like the artsy Marines, like Brian Dennehy and I forget who else. And I was like, I was like, great. And, and then I went to sign up, like when I actually really had to sign up, I was gonna go in as a reservist and I was like, I'm here for combat photography. They're like, oh no, that's just full time. And I said, well, what, what can I do instead? And they said, anti-tank. And I was like, so against the tank?

• 28:56Speaker 06

  I'm like, uh.

• 28:57Jason Bateman?

How do I get in the tank?

• 28:58Speaker 06

Alright, I'm gonna think about that. Let me just think about it. And then the sax player quit the band and so he and I weren't really close anymore, so I lost my buddy. And then we got enough money, and then we got enough money to like record an album that summer, like to record our own like CD.

• 29:11Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 29:12Speaker 06

And so I was like, I think I'm not gonna do it.

• 29:14Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 29:15Sean Hayes?

  Oh wow.

• 29:15Jason Bateman?

So you did not go through the, the, the basic training?

• 29:18Speaker 06

No, no, I didn't go through any of that.

• 29:19Sean Hayes?

Wait, so but then you, so I wanna go back to the thing, cause I didn't know you collected guitars. So you, how many guitars do you have?

• 29:25Speaker 06

I don't really collect guitars. I mean, I, I have some guitars, you know?

• 29:29Jason Bateman?

But you told the Coen Brothers you did, I'll bet.

• 29:31Speaker 06

  Seven? Seven's pretty good. Seven?

• 29:34Sean Hayes?

Seven guitars, that's a lot of guitars.

• 29:35Jason Bateman?

  That's a collection.

• 29:36Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 29:37Jason Bateman?

Was that the last audition you were, the last audition I ever did was for Hudsucker Proxy?

• 29:42Speaker 06

  Whoa.

• 29:43Jason Bateman?

Yeah. So it was for the Coen Brothers. I mean, I, I'd read today for the Coen Brothers.

• 29:47Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 29:48Jason Bateman?

Was that the last audition you've ever done?

• 29:50Speaker 06

No, my last, my last audition was for Mike Nichols.

• 29:56Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 29:56Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 29:57Speaker 06

  For Betrayal on Broadway.

• 29:59Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 29:59Sean Hayes?

  Oh wow.

• 30:00Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 30:00Sean Hayes?

  Wow. When was that?

• 30:02Speaker 06

Terribly. It was, uh, 2014. I remember I came in and I had like listened to a lot of Harold Pinter to kinda do his accent. And I was going through a divorce at the time, so I was like, man, I'm feeling this thing. Where the, the play, but it's very much about that infidelity and all that.

• 30:19Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 30:20Speaker 06

And so I got there and Juliette Rylance was the, um, the reader. She's a great, great actress, Mark Rylance's daughter.

• 30:28Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 30:28Speaker 06

And, uh, and I did the, I did the first, the first scene and Mike Nichols was quiet and he goes, Um, where'd you get that accent?

• 30:40Speaker 06

I was like, where'd I, where'd I get it? Yeah, where'd you get it? And I was like, oh, I was listening to, uh, I was listening to Pinter, uh, I was listening to some recordings and kinda trying to do that. He's like, oh, yeah, well, I guess different English people sound differently. And I was like, huh. And then, when we do the next scene, so I did the next scene. And then he goes, would it make you sad to do this play every night?

• 31:04Sean Hayes?

  What does that mean?

• 31:04Speaker 06

  I was like, trick question.

• 31:05Sean Hayes?

Yeah, how do you answer that?

• 31:06Speaker 06

And I was like, I'm just gonna be honest. Like, you know what? I was reading it on the subway ride over here and, yeah, you know, I'm kinda going through something right now and I feel really connected to like the grief of that and the pain of that. And I feel like, yeah, it would definitely be, you know, delving into that night by night. And then Juliet Ryle, and God bless her, she's like, but also fun too, right? I was like, oh, yeah, no, but also so fun. I mean, come on, doing this on Broadway with you, it'd be so fun.

• 31:30Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 31:31Speaker 06

And then they're like, thank you, thank you very much.

• 31:33Sean Hayes?

  Thank you.

• 31:34Speaker 06

And then I, yeah, and then I walked out.

• 31:35Sean Hayes?

Who got, who got it? Do you remember who got it?

• 31:38Speaker 06

  Rafe, Rafe Spall.

• 31:40Sean Hayes?

  Okay.

• 31:41Speaker 06

Yeah, Rafe Spall. And they did the play, they did the play as a comedy.

• 31:46Sean Hayes?

  Oh.

• 31:47Speaker 06

  As well.

• 31:48Jason Bateman?

So the right answer would have been the opposite of?

• 31:51Speaker 06

Yeah, the right answer was, was the opposite.

• 31:54Sean Hayes?

Yeah, but the trick question is, just tell me, like, what, I wanna do this at a comedy. So, yeah, okay, then it'd be fun. I know. You know, okay, so, born in Guatemala, which I did not know either, and then Baltimore.

• 32:05Speaker 06

  Sean's Miami.

• 32:06Will Arnett?

Sean, is this question gonna make you sad?

• 32:08Speaker 06

Yes. But also fun. I'm gonna have a blast asking it.

• 32:13Will Arnett?

  Keep going, keep going.

• 32:14Sean Hayes?

Wait, all that moving around before you were six years old? And why? Because your dad, is, that's what I read, that he was doing his medical something? Is all because of your dad?

• 32:27Speaker 06

Yeah, I mean also just like that, yeah, the immigrant story of like, you know, coming to America for a better life. And so he, he grew up in DC, he's Cuban, he was born in Cuba, but grew up in DC. And then went to medical school in Guatemala. Him and his two brothers, and that's where he met my mom. And then they had my sister, and then, uh, yeah, then I was born in like, we, as I was six months old, and then we moved to DC first, like Virginia, Baltimore area, did kindergarten there, then Louisiana, because he went to LSU for his residency. And then Florida, where we had family, and his mom was there, and we lived with my grandma for a bit, and then...

• 33:11Jason Bateman?

And eventually became, became a doctor, yeah?

• 33:13Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 33:14Jason Bateman?

Was there, was there any, um, uh, pressure on you to, to follow in his footsteps? Or did you fully embrace the, the actor thing?

• 33:20Speaker 06

No, he kinda, he, um, was also a bit of a frustrated, uh, artist as well. Like, he would make movies with his brothers on a, you know, 8mm camera, and...

• 33:31Jason Bateman?

And that's what the initial spark was for you too, maybe?

• 33:33Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, he would like bring home, every Friday was like a movie night, and he would bring home these like mystery movies that we'd watch. And then he bought a camcorder, and we'd, we'd make like home movies.

• 33:44Will Arnett?

So he must have been kinda thrilled when you kinda got into this a little bit?

• 33:47Speaker 06

Yeah, he was into it, he was into it, until it became competition.

• 33:53Jason Bateman?

  Is he still with us?

• 33:55Speaker 06

  He's still with us.

• 33:56Jason Bateman?

And so he must be so proud.

• 33:57Speaker 06

I brought him to the Frankenstein premiere in Venice. Oh, that's so cool. Which was good.

• 34:01Jason Bateman?

Do you remember who the first actor was that he showed you? That you kind of latched on to and was like, oh, I'd like to have those chops when I'm older?

• 34:11Speaker 06

  Tim Curry.

• 34:12Jason Bateman?

  Yeah?

• 34:12Speaker 06

Oh, really? That's cool. I saw, he showed, we watched Clue. Uh huh, I love that movie. And then we watched Legend. Uh huh, I love that movie. And when I realized it was the same fucking guy.

• 34:23Jason Bateman?

  What about Rocky Horror?

• 34:24Speaker 06

Yeah, well then, yeah, Rocky Horror after that. Although dad didn't bring that one home for movie night.

• 34:30Speaker 06

But uh, but man, like I just, I couldn't believe that that was the same guy. And I noticed it because the way that his lip curled at one point, it's like the devil.

• 34:40Will Arnett?

And you went like, oh my god.

• 34:41Speaker 06

  Yeah. Oh, you can, wow.

• 34:43Sean Hayes?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Um, what about, I have to jump around, sorry, but what about, how about Cuba? I've always been fascinated with Cuba. Have you, have you been able to go, to go there?

• 34:52Speaker 06

I haven't been. I haven't been, I haven't been, you know, like I grew up in Miami Cuban world, which is like everyone's so traumatized and afraid and so complicated. But I've, I've wanted to go. We almost went, when Lewin Davis came out, actually, we were gonna go to the film festival and at the last minute, it didn't happen. But it's definitely a place I wanna go.

• 35:11Sean Hayes?

What is the current, I feel so dumb, as usual. You can't, you can't go there freely?

• 35:16Speaker 06

It opened up for a moment.

• 35:18Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 35:19Speaker 06

Uh, under Obama and then closed up and now it's closed up again.

• 35:22Will Arnett?

Well, can, like, as an American, you know, Canadians go, I know that a lot of Canadians go there on, on holiday all the time. There are lots of flights and I know.

• 35:29Sean Hayes?

  Oh, is that right?

• 35:30Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's right.

• 35:31Sean Hayes?

  To Cuba?

• 35:32Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 35:32Sean Hayes?

I mean, why would you wanna go? Like, because it's beautiful or?

• 35:34Speaker 06

Well, there's our quote for the day.

• 35:36Will Arnett?

There it is. I mean, fuck you.

• 35:38Speaker 06

  Enjoy your, uh, your vacation.

• 35:40Sean Hayes?

I mean, it's an incredible place, you know.

• 35:41Will Arnett?

How many demographics are you trying to get rid of at one point, man?

• 35:44Sean Hayes?

You know, I just, I just didn't know what the draw was. Like, I know what the draw is. Put the shovel down.

• 35:49Will Arnett?

It's got incredible culture, it's got.

• 35:52Sean Hayes?

Okay, okay, okay. I just didn't know, people are like, hey, I can't wait to go to Cuba. All right, so.

• 35:57Will Arnett?

They feel the same way about you and the mall. What's the?

• 36:01Will Arnett?

Why does he go to the mall all the time?

• 36:02Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 36:05Sean Hayes?

Okay, so anyway, Oscar. So I grew, I grew up super, super Catholic. You grew up very, is it safe to say evangelical or Christian?

• 36:15Speaker 06

  Evangelical, yeah.

• 36:16Sean Hayes?

Evangelical. Now, listen, into religion, what? No, I think it's fa, I think it's fascinating because, you know. Because they, you were like devout, right?

• 36:26Speaker 06

  We're talking spiritual abuse.

• 36:27Sean Hayes?

Yeah, totally, totally. I love talking about, we don't have to talk about it, but I love talking about it.

• 36:32Jason Bateman?

Dude, dude, because I don't, I know zero about religion. Please, educate.

• 36:35Sean Hayes?

Yeah, I, I, I mean, you know, it's, there's some wonderful Catholics, there's some wonderful Christians, and then there's the ones that are beyond hypocritical, that you know.

• 36:45Jason Bateman?

Do you guys know, like, what is the difference between Catholic, Christian, evangelical, Episcopalian, Protestant, Methodist, Lutheran?

• 36:54Will Arnett?

They're all Christian, they're all under this big umbrella of Christianity, right?

• 36:58Jason Bateman?

But how, what is the, is there a singular difference that, that separates each one of them? Like, as far as interpretation of the Bible goes, or, yes?

• 37:07Will Arnett?

  Yes, yes.

• 37:08Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, I guess that's.

• 37:08Will Arnett?

Short answer, it's kind of complicated.

• 37:11Jason Bateman?

But is it like an identifiable, like, could it be a Jeopardy question? Like, what is the single difference between Lutheran and Episcopalian? Is it one difference?

• 37:20Will Arnett?

Well, like, put it this way, like, the Episcopal Church came from, is Church of England, right? And it was established as a, as a sort of an offshoot of Catholicism, because Henry VIII wanted to be able to divorce his wife.

• 37:30Jason Bateman?

  Jesus Christ, look at you.

• 37:31Will Arnett?

So he established the Church of England.

• 37:33Speaker 06

  And Martin Luther comes along.

• 37:34Will Arnett?

And then, and so of course, it's a little bit different, it's kind of like, a lot of people describe, uh, Church of England as sort of Catholic light without all the pageantry. That's a sort of a simplistic view. And then there are all these different, yeah.

• 37:46Speaker 06

Yeah, in Catholicism, there's a lot more intercessors, I guess is the word, you know? Like the saints and people that you pray to, and, like you said, the pageantry, which, to go to Frankenstein, is a very Catholic Mexican.

• 38:02Sean Hayes?

  Look at this pro.

• 38:02Speaker 06

And version of, but he talks about it very much in that way, you know? Like a Christ figure, like the forensic nature of the crucifixion.

• 38:09Sean Hayes?

Yes. How about, how about in the movie, when the monster's up on that thing? I was just, just shy of being a cross.

• 38:16Speaker 06

I mean, definitely, no, we called it the crucifixion, there's even a thorn, you know, the, the metal thorns on the head.

• 38:21Sean Hayes?

No, totally, I thought it was cool, but that, but did, was that a conscious choice of Guillermo, or whoever, to not make it a specific cross, but just at an angle?

• 38:29Speaker 06

  Have it a little bit.

• 38:29Sean Hayes?

Yeah, you know what I mean?

• 38:30Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 38:31Jason Bateman?

  I caught that.

• 38:32Speaker 06

  Yeah, it wasn't an accident.

• 38:34Jason Bateman?

Now, is working with Guillermo del Toro everything that you would hope and think that it is? He just strikes me as just such an infectiously enthusiastic and kind leader, not to mention his creative abilities are just unmatched.

• 38:53Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, it was, it was, I was like a kid. There was just so much joy. It was so much, so much fun. It was this particular approach to it, too. Where, I mean, while he was writing it, he's like, "Cabron, I'm making you a banquet." And he really, he really did. It was just like a feast of stuff to do every day. We only spoke in Spanish to each other.

• 39:19Jason Bateman?

  Oh, that's cool.

• 39:20Speaker 06

He would, he would direct in jokes, mostly, like dirty Mexican jokes. But also in like, and he was just ebullient, really funny. There was no whispering behind monitors, you know? It was like, if there was a problem, everybody knew it. If something was great, everybody knew it.

• 39:36Jason Bateman?

  I love that.

• 39:37Speaker 06

It was just really, really fun. He would, and it's like zero pretension whatsoever, you know? He was, he'd be like, "Cabron, I need, I need a lot of jamon on this one." And I'm like, "Mmm." "Jamon with mustard and mayonnaise to make it go down easy. I just need you to look up and look right past the camera and hold it." Or he'd be like, "I need you to, I need you to do the Maria Cristina", which is like a telenovela thing, you know? He's like, "I need you to be in profile and then walk across a counter to him and then stop and turn around and look."

• 40:10Jason Bateman?

  Right, super dramatic.

• 40:11Speaker 06

You know, and he's like, "Just give it to me. Give this, make this one Mexican happy." You know? Wow.

• 40:17Jason Bateman?

I love that. The scope of the movie is so massive, like, how long was the shoot?

• 40:23Speaker 06

I mean, it it spanned nearly eight months.

• 40:27Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 40:28Speaker 06

With where was it? There was a two month break where he shot miniatures in in London. We shot it in Toronto and in the UK, Scotland and.

• 40:38Will Arnett?

Do you when you do something like that with a with a director like that who has such a vision, right, and he has and he has such a but but from what I understand from you also a very collaborative spirit. Do you not to get sort of too, but do you when you are in that your your ability? What are what are the sort of the parameters or are there any of of sort of bringing stuff in your thoughts and feeling like you can just go out on a limb?

• 41:07Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 41:08Will Arnett?

With a guy like him, is it just pretty wide open in that way?

• 41:11Speaker 06

It is like that was the one thought when I was going into it, like I know he's an animator. I know like the visual language is so precise.

• 41:20Speaker 06

And so I, you know, I went in expecting like, all right, the constraints are going to be tight, but that's the that's the job. But he actually was in in a very different. He he talks about like making the movie with Bradley really shifted him like it really opened him up in like an amazing way and he credits.

• 41:38Will Arnett?

  Nightmare Alley.

• 41:39Speaker 06

Yeah, Nightmare Alley. He credits him a lot with like just him learning how to listen to the movie. He would talk a lot about that while we were shooting it, just like the movie kind of tells you what it needs.

• 41:50Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 41:51Speaker 06

In fact, at one point I was saying like, hey, you know, I'm I find myself like, am I not shaking it up enough? Am I not like being kind of dangerous enough and going out on a limb enough? And he's like, no, that's that's an idea. It's like the movie kind of tells you what it needs and what however you're responding is what it's needing. And if it's needing you to be this way, then then don't second guess that so much. He gave a lot of feeling to all of us of like, you can't fail. I wrote this stuff for you. It's there's nothing to like reach for.

• 42:20Will Arnett?

  Right.

• 42:20Speaker 06

Um, which was great. Uh, and also, but you know, but also there it was a very, it's a very specific kind of performance. He said, you know, it's not naturalistic. It's heightened. I want the speed of language, speed of thought. There's not a lot of pausing for you guys. Um, it's it's kind of high camp. Um, and high melodrama and just all heart. Like, that's what he wants it to be. Yeah, all heart, for sure.

• 42:46Jason Bateman?

So he was really specific about the tone before you guys got started.

• 42:49Will Arnett?

That's helpful, but God, that's really helpful, I bet.

• 42:52Jason Bateman?

For sure. Um, and did he, did he, did he attempt to sort of give you a taste for that collectively by doing any sort of like table reads ahead of time? Or rehearsals in a group on like around a table?

• 43:03Speaker 06

No, he didn't want to do that so much. We had, we did have one big table read. Uh, with like the execs and all that. Uh, and that was it. I mean, he, you know, cause he was quite protective of the script as he was writing it. Um, you know, I think partly out of just like a little insecurity as well. Like, I'm not sure it's quite there yet. Um, and so he kept adjusting and I mean, every day he was working. Like even behind the monitor, he was drawing his, um, uh, storyboards. He would be quilting the movie as we went along. Like you, sometimes you would do a take and he would like put it right into the flow of the edit. So he would just show you.

• 43:43Speaker 06

Like, we did the last scene of the movie and the next day he came in with, you know, Johann Johannson music on it. And showed the edited scene to me.

• 43:51Will Arnett?

How do you, how, how, how did you like that? Or how did it affect what you were doing?

• 43:55Speaker 06

Well, that, I mean, that example in particular was, was interesting because, you know, it was the last scene of the movie. And so I want to try to talk about it without giving too much away of it. It's like a highly emotional crescendo of the whole thing. And, you know, I spent the day like in the zone, like listening to all my sad sack music. And, you know, like looking at pictures of sad times. You know, doing like the full anti Mike Nichols moment and. Right. This is, this is in the Arctic. This is, yeah, in the, yeah, in the ship. Yeah. And, you know, and like did, you know, and I went in and like didn't talk to anybody and we laid down. We did this scene and there was tears and everybody was really happy. And Guillermo was, you know, high five and all, yeah, we got it.

• 44:39Speaker 06

And then the next day he showed it to me. And I was like, I don't, I don't really buy it. Like me, me, I was like, I don't, I was like, was that take five? I thought take five was the good take. He's like, no, it's take five coming on. I was like, I don't think that's take five. And then we looked and it wasn't take five, but then take five wasn't that much better either.

• 44:56Will Arnett?

Was it, was it because you think that you came in with too much of that? Too much of this and not listening to this?

• 45:02Speaker 06

Check it out, what happened? So then, then, then I was sitting there and then Guillermo comes over and he's like, what's, what's wrong? I was supposed to just do like a little insert of my hand, grabbing his hand. And he's like, what's wrong? And I was like, I don't know, man, I'm feeling a little insecure. And he's like, well, you are an actor. I was like, I know, I know, but, but, but I just feel like, should I have looked up maybe when I said sorry? Should I have, I just, and he's like, no, no, no, no, no, those are all ideas. You know, you were honest and you thought about your mom and you thought about all these things and that was there. I was like, all right, okay. And then I went away for like 30 minutes and I was like, well, I just have to be a dead body for the rest of the day. And I came back and he had set up a whole different thing. And I was like, what are we doing? He's like, we're gonna do it again. We're gonna do your close up again. And he's like, you know what? From yesterday. And he's like, you know what? It's okay.

• 45:47Speaker 06

Like, we're gonna see if, you know, we definitely have something. If you don't have anything, that's okay. I'll just make fun of you for the rest of your life, you know? Win, win. And so like, really quickly, I'm like throwing on my ear pods to try to like find a song to get me sad again. You know, like I'm trying to do all the shit. And I just, I didn't have any time. I like laid down and we did it. And we did like four takes and it was way better.

• 46:09Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 46:11Speaker 06

I didn't have time to try to like evoke anything.

• 46:13Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 46:14Speaker 06

Or like, it was like more sober, it was more severe. It just was like, it was just was.

• 46:18Will Arnett?

You didn't have to bring a preconceived idea of what it should be as opposed to just letting it be.

• 46:23Speaker 06

Yeah, and that's what's in, it's what's in the film, you know?

• 46:26Will Arnett?

  I love that.

• 46:29Sean Hayes?

  We'll be right back.

• 46:32Sean Hayes?

to give the gift of scent this holiday season.

• 49:08Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 49:11Jason Bateman?

So, but that adjustment in your performance came as a result of you watching what you were doing. And are you, are you good about that? Because I, I'm sure you've worked with as many actors as we have. But, but some actors, they, they just, they don't watch themselves. They can't watch themselves. I learned so much from seeing how bad I am sometimes. It's like, oh, don't do that anymore. Or you think it's coming across this way, but it actually comes across a different way.

• 49:34Speaker 06

I asked Christoph Waltz, who's on it, right? It's like a fucking legend. I asked him specifically about that. And he's like, he doesn't watch. He's like, because it's okay if you watch and you think it's not good. But the bad thing is when you watch and you think it's good.

• 49:49Speaker 06

And like, that can be way worse.

• 49:51Will Arnett?

  Why is that?

• 49:52Sean Hayes?

Because then it's cut together and you're like, oh, maybe it wasn't that great.

• 49:55Speaker 06

Or there's just like a self-consciousness, or you think, you know, it's just for him. But, but this was, but there's many times when I've watched something and I'm like, I can do it better. And I just, and I can't, you know, it's, it's in, so I don't know, man. I don't know. But, but that was, there was a moment there after that happened where I was like, well, does this mean I have to watch every fucking take or every scene? And I just said, nah, you know, it, I think, yeah, I, it's, for me, it's not like a definitive

• 50:22Jason Bateman?

  Sure.

• 50:23Speaker 06

thought of like one or the other.

• 50:25Jason Bateman?

I've also asked a bunch of people this, this question as well, but with all the

• 50:30Will Arnett?

  Are you single?

• 50:31Jason Bateman?

Yeah. And what is your sign? And you're rising. With the incredible directors that you've worked with, do you ever fantasize about cherry picking from each one of them and becoming a smoking director yourself?

• 50:47Speaker 06

Yeah, sometimes, yeah. I mean, I thought originally that's what I kind of was more into. Like I came into like acting from like making movies with friends and doing that and

• 50:56Jason Bateman?

  Yeah?

• 50:57Speaker 06

Yeah. Yeah, I think about that sometimes.

• 51:00Sean Hayes?

Oh, that would be awesome. You'd be incredible.

• 51:02Jason Bateman?

  Please do.

• 51:02Sean Hayes?

  You'd be, you'd be great.

• 51:03Will Arnett?

When you say think about sometimes, I wanted to, do you have an idea in your mind of something that's kind of back there?

• 51:08Speaker 06

I don't. That's why, that's why I'm like, until that thing happens where it's like, I, you know, I think until that happens. What scares me a little bit is just, I'm incredibly indecisive. As just a human being, like even with a menu or with anything, I just get, I get just crippled. Like, I don't, I don't know. So like someone being like, red shirt or blue shirt? I'd be like, ah, I don't know. But, but, but I guess it's also a conversation. It's like, I don't know, what's the difference, you know? So kind of looking at it maybe as more of a conversation than a decision is.

• 51:40Jason Bateman?

  Right, right, right.

• 51:41Speaker 06

How do you do that, Jason?

• 51:43Jason Bateman?

I mean, you, if you, I, I, when somebody told me once, it's okay to say you don't know. It, it freed me up a lot. Like, that, that's actually a great, a great answer. When they come to you with all those thousands of questions, you say, I'm going to come back to you on that. Give me a second to think about that.

• 51:59Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it's okay to do that.

• 52:00Jason Bateman?

Yeah, it alleviates a lot of the.

• 52:02Will Arnett?

You mean in live show, you're saying?

• 52:04Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 52:05Will Arnett?

I know, I mean it, I'm being serious.

• 52:06Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 52:07Will Arnett?

I think it's a really important life. I, I do it too also when people go, they want an answer. I'm like, well, I, I, somebody told me like, I don't have to answer them on their timeline.

• 52:15Sean Hayes?

That's right. Yeah, I only learned it in like last 10 years, where I was saying, I don't know.

• 52:18Will Arnett?

I learned it a year ago.

• 52:19Sean Hayes?

I don't know what that word means. I don't know what you're talking about. What, can you repeat what you just said? Like, I, I, I don't care anymore. But the, I want to get back to, well, I don't care about being perceived as like this. Yeah, no, I understand what you're saying.

• 52:33Speaker 06

Well, you know, that's actually helped me with like the not remembering people. Like, I, I just go out on a limb and I'll, I'll think, I think your name is this. And if I'm wrong, it's okay. They say, they say, no, it's not Kathy, it's Melissa. And I'm like, sorry.

• 52:49Will Arnett?

I go a step further, Oscar. I go, I think your name should be this.

• 52:54Will Arnett?

  Sign the name.

• 52:56Sean Hayes?

Wait, so a, a little more of your, of your personal stuff, Oscar, if you don't mind. Like, your wife is this Elvira Lynn. She's beautiful, talented, incredible documentary filmmaker.

• 53:06Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 53:07Sean Hayes?

Yeah, she's incredible, incredible. And she, I just saw the trailer, and I did not know this until I was researching you for King Hamlet, which I can't wait to watch. It's you playing, it's, it, what is it? Is it the making of the play Hamlet and it's following you around from, about the process from rehearsal to?

• 53:26Jason Bateman?

  No way.

• 53:26Sean Hayes?

  Is that what it is?

• 53:27Speaker 06

Yeah, so in 2017, it was this crazy confluence of things that happened where.

• 53:33Speaker 06

My mother passed away in February. My, we got married in March. In April, our first child was born. And in April, I started rehearsals for Hamlet, like this four-hour version of Hamlet, this thing that I was working on for like 12 years. And so her being a documentary filmmaker and having a new baby and like just kind of not knowing how to process this, you know, she's from Denmark too, and she's kind of thrust into this whole other world of stuff. She just started picking up a camera and started filming. You know, around that time before, before that, we were also filming. Like I would play music and she would like film little music videos and we would put them on Vimeo and stuff. And, um, and so it was kind of a natural extension of that. And so she just started filming,

• 54:17Speaker 06

because the idea was she was gonna film some of the making of, of this project. And when all this stuff started happening, she just kept filming. So like when I went down to my mom for hospice, she was kind of there. And I told her, you know, this, the only way we can do this is if it's okay if this never sees the light of day as well. And she said, yeah, of course, of course. I don't even know what I'm doing. I'm just filming because I don't know what the fuck else to do. And so, so that's what we did. And she filmed this whole process and then, um, put it away. And then about a year ago, took out the hard drives and started looking through it and started piecing it together with her great editor that she's worked with.

• 54:55Jason Bateman?

  That's really cool.

• 54:55Speaker 06

And then she kind of came up with this kind of beautiful movie about what, kind of what we do, right? Which is like how you deal with your life and how those things intertwine and.

• 55:05Jason Bateman?

Yeah. Did she, did she, did she say to you, hey, remember that thing we said we'd never show the light of day? I'm, I'm working on it. Did, did she tell you that she's thinking about, or, or did she show you something first?

• 55:16Speaker 06

She showed me something first. She's like, hey, I've been putting this thing together. What do you think of this? And, yeah, and I watched it. I was like, I don't know what I think of that, but keep going, you know? Keep, keep going.

• 55:25Jason Bateman?

Oh, that's really cool. And with a newborn on her hip the entire time.

• 55:29Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 55:30Jason Bateman?

  She sounds incredible, my god.

• 55:31Speaker 06

Yeah, she's incredible, yeah. And she shot it as well. And it's very, it's very funny too, because it's just, it's the absurdity of everything that's happening. And.

• 55:39Will Arnett?

Must have been very vulnerable to, to watch that.

• 55:42Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, to watch it again. I mean, I hadn't seen any of that footage, especially with my mom and our family. And, you know, it was, uh, yeah, it was really, really intense, but really proud of her for doing it.

• 55:54Jason Bateman?

How did you guys, uh, how did you guys meet? Was it a Juilliard?

• 55:57Speaker 06

No, no, no, she, she happened to be in New York, working on something.

• 56:03Will Arnett?

  Right.

• 56:04Speaker 06

And she, it was like a movie she had finished and it was like some after-party for it. And my manager at the time was like, "You gotta come to this party." And I was like, "I'm not, I am preparing for my Coen Brothers movie, I am not gonna go to this thing."

• 56:17Will Arnett?

  But dude, there's this chick.

• 56:19Speaker 06

You gotta, you just gotta come. And I was like, "All right, but I'm gonna go dressed as Luanne Davis."

• 56:24Jason Bateman?

With my cat and my guitar.

• 56:26Speaker 06

Yeah, well, this is before I had started, right, but I dressed in the outfit and I was like, "And I'm gonna go and I'm gonna like, I'm gonna try to do this thing where I can project warmth without smiling." I wanna see if I can do it, you know?

• 56:38Jason Bateman?

  Sure.

• 56:39Speaker 06

Or like tell a joke but not laugh to let anybody know it's a joke and let's see what happens, you know? And, and so I went in and I was like sitting there with my fingerless gloves and eating and nobody else was eating and, and her being like, you know, a documentarian was like, "Who's this little brown weirdo?" You know, in the corner. And, and like comes over and starts talking to me and, and then I told her I was a musician.

• 57:04Will Arnett?

  No way, no way.

• 57:07Jason Bateman?

Perhaps, perhaps you've heard of the closet heterosexuals?

• 57:11Speaker 06

At one point she's like, "Are you, I can't tell, are you flirting with me?" And I was like, "Yeah, yeah, I am."

• 57:16Jason Bateman?

Oh, that's cute. I love that.

• 57:19Speaker 06

  That's how it started.

• 57:19Jason Bateman?

Uh, you're not, are you, are you a cat guy? I'm sure you asked, you, I bet they, but that was the question at the junket, wasn't it?

• 57:27Speaker 06

  That was the question.

• 57:27Jason Bateman?

Do you play guitar and are you a cat guy?

• 57:29Speaker 06

It's so funny, like a lot of these things that I'm saying too, like I do realize I do, there are anecdotes that I have said before and so, it's funny like after you say, I don't know if you guys get this, but like saying anecdotes after a while, you feel like, "I think I'm lying."

• 57:40Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 57:42Speaker 06

I've said this so much, I don't think this is true.

• 57:45Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure.

• 57:48Will Arnett?

Sean, hang on, Star Wars, we'll get to it.

• 57:50Jason Bateman?

I know, but, and Ex Machina Dune, I know, I can't wait.

• 57:54Speaker 06

I, I, I, I used to think that I could speak to cats, so I would like go to the backyard and like meow a lot and cats would come.

• 58:01Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 58:02Will Arnett?

Hang on a second, let's just pause in here for a second, Oscar, go ahead and elaborate.

• 58:06Speaker 06

That was it, it was just like,

• 58:10Speaker 06

  and they would come.

• 58:11Will Arnett?

That's why you like the jokes, that's why you like that joke so much.

• 58:15Jason Bateman?

All right, I don't have a lot of time. Hit it with the sci-fi. Uh, I don't have a lot of time, I gotta get through this stuff because I wanna know about...

• 58:22Sean Hayes?

  Ex Machina.

• 58:23Will Arnett?

  Ex Machina, incredible.

• 58:24Sean Hayes?

Listen, listen to me. I've seen it like 10 times.

• 58:27Will Arnett?

  It's so good.

• 58:27Sean Hayes?

I know every line. Scotty and I quote it all the time. You know, we still go Kyoko, go-go, right? That made me laugh, sorry. Wait, so it came out in 2014.

• 58:40Speaker 06

  Yeah, how crazy.

• 58:41Sean Hayes?

Can you believe the relevance it has today?

• 58:45Speaker 06

Yeah, I mean Alex Garland, he's just...

• 58:47Sean Hayes?

  Wild, isn't it?

• 58:48Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, he keyed into this thing and even the way that we gather information. You know, he talked, Nathan, the character I play, talks about like, well, yeah, you know, I'm gonna, I gather all the signals from all the cellphones and I get it all and that's how I get...

• 59:02Sean Hayes?

I mean, everything you talked about in the movie is happening right now.

• 59:05Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 59:05Sean Hayes?

  It's crazy.

• 59:06Speaker 06

  Yeah, yeah.

• 59:07Sean Hayes?

  I just...

• 59:08Will Arnett?

Yeah, I wonder, does that occur to you when you see stuff or you're reading stuff that's going on in the world and you go, "Yeah, yeah? I was there."

• 59:14Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, it was, it's, but it felt like that when I read the script and then Alex Garland and I kept like talking about it, working on it. We would look at it from every angle and look at like the current, you know, literature and everything that was going on at the time. And it just, it felt like completely locked in and, you know.

• 59:32Sean Hayes?

It's amazing how it holds up.

• 59:34Will Arnett?

Alex Garland is, I mean, this guy, I mean, right?

• 59:37Jason Bateman?

Well, let's hope not all your films are Harbingers. Dune, Dune's a pretty bleak look into our future.

• 59:43Sean Hayes?

  I know, right?

• 59:44Jason Bateman?

  But incredible film, my god.

• 59:46Sean Hayes?

Amazing, and you're amazing in it. And Denis Villeneuve, like you get to, you get all the, you get all the great ones that you get to work with. I read this, I want you to tell the guys, if you want to, I can tell it, which is one of the best pranks I've ever heard of on any film shoot on Dune. When you, after the nude scene.

• 1:00:04Speaker 06

  Speaking of dance belts.

• 1:00:06Sean Hayes?

  Speaking of dance belts.

• 1:00:07Speaker 06

Go ahead, you tell it, Sean.

• 1:00:08Sean Hayes?

Well, it's called, what is it really called? You call it a cock sock, right?

• 1:00:12Speaker 06

  Well, or a modesty sock.

• 1:00:14Sean Hayes?

Modesty sock, that's what it is. Modesty sock.

• 1:00:17Will Arnett?

Not everybody calls it that, but yeah.

• 1:00:18Sean Hayes?

I'm gonna get it wrong, but you, you, you left your, so you did the scene and you had a quote, "modesty sock on." And you put it in Denis' jacket pocket, right?

• 1:00:32Speaker 06

  His chest pocket.

• 1:00:34Sean Hayes?

And he later pulled it out?

• 1:00:35Speaker 06

Yeah, well, I left and then I got a picture of him holding it like, what the fuck?

• 1:00:40Jason Bateman?

  At the dinner table.

• 1:00:42Sean Hayes?

  After the take, that's hilarious.

• 1:00:44Speaker 06

He says this is true, that MoMA asked for it.

• 1:00:48Jason Bateman?

  Oh my god.

• 1:00:48Sean Hayes?

Oh, really? Really? Well, they'd be smart to get it. Hopefully, they got a wall big enough.

• 1:00:55Speaker 06

  Yeah, right?

• 1:00:57Sean Hayes?

Good for you, good for you, good for you.

• 1:01:01Speaker 06

  Sean, anything on Star Wars?

• 1:01:03Sean Hayes?

I mean, yeah, just the dumb question, the obvious question.

• 1:01:06Speaker 06

  Is it real?

• 1:01:07Sean Hayes?

Were you a fan? Right, he's tattooing a real place. Look at this.

• 1:01:12Sean Hayes?

What's Darth Vader like in the morning?

• 1:01:16Sean Hayes?

No, the basic questions, were you a fan? Were you freaked out that you got the part, like, was it? Were you a huge fan as a kid?

• 1:01:25Speaker 06

No, but my family were huge, huge fans, like collectors and...

• 1:01:29Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, okay, got it.

• 1:01:30Speaker 06

My uncle in particular was massive, massive.

• 1:01:34Jason Bateman?

He loved making that phone call.

• 1:01:36Speaker 06

Oh, man, that phone call was, uh, it was great. And he came, he was an extra a couple of times. He got to wherever I brought him, and he, you know, he died a couple of years ago, which was, you know, but so, rest in peace, but it was the most amazing thing, like, I brought him and I couldn't find him. And he was like in Carrie Fisher's trailer, just like hanging out.

• 1:01:55Sean Hayes?

Yeah, that's crazy to me, that's crazy. I mean, Scotty and I just visited the set of the new Star Wars movie with Sean Levy directing when I was in London, and we got to go to the creature shop. I mean, we, that's like everything we're for, I don't know if you're into that. But I was just like, it's so, it's so cool that you were part of the reboot of this franchise. You were the first part of the reboot. I mean, it's wild. And look at where it's at now, it's like, last night at the dinner table, Jason and we're all sitting around, and out of nowhere, I go, has anybody seen the trailer for Mandalorian and Grogu? Just silence. Nobody's.

• 1:02:29Jason Bateman?

Except I said, I seen it and it's fantastic.

• 1:02:33Sean Hayes?

Yes, I can't wait to see that movie.

• 1:02:34Jason Bateman?

And didn't you say, yeah, that you you have not seen the trailer? Or you refuse to see the trailer?

• 1:02:40Sean Hayes?

Me? No, God, I saw it like ten times.

• 1:02:42Jason Bateman?

  Or something like that?

• 1:02:43Sean Hayes?

No, no, no, I saw it. I love it.

• 1:02:44Jason Bateman?

Oh, no, no, there was a guy I I was with yesterday said that he he he will not see it yet because it'll get his, he won't see it until it's closer to release because he's just gonna get too excited.

• 1:02:55Speaker 06

You can't sustain the excitement level.

• 1:02:56Sean Hayes?

Yeah. All right, rapid fire before we let you go. Ready?

• 1:03:01Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:01Sean Hayes?

If we were roommates for a week, what would be the one Oscar Isaac cork that would drive me insane and what's the one that I would love? You cook?

• 1:03:09Will Arnett?

  Sean, look at you.

• 1:03:11Speaker 06

  I don't, I don't really cook. I mean, I can cook, but I don't cook a lot.

• 1:03:15Jason Bateman?

So Sean's not happy with that. What would he love?

• 1:03:18Speaker 06

  Oh, God.

• 1:03:20Sean Hayes?

  What would drive me crazy?

• 1:03:21Speaker 06

You wouldn't love that I don't cook very much. What would you love? I, I, um.

• 1:03:27Sean Hayes?

  Theater stories.

• 1:03:28Speaker 06

Theater stories, hugs. I'm very affectionate.

• 1:03:30Will Arnett?

  Oh, he loves a hug.

• 1:03:33Sean Hayes?

  There you go.

• 1:03:33Jason Bateman?

  Inappropriate, unnecessary.

• 1:03:35Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:03:35Jason Bateman?

  Impromptu hugs.

• 1:03:36Will Arnett?

  Cock hug hugs.

• 1:03:40Sean Hayes?

Who's who's most likely to win in a board game? You, Jessica Chastain or Ethan Hawke?

• 1:03:45Speaker 06

Oh, I guess it depends on the board game, but, you know.

• 1:03:49Sean Hayes?

  Scrabble. How about Scrabble?

• 1:03:50Speaker 06

Sure, sure. I'm gonna go with Ethan because, you know, he's like a poet and a writer and he's just, you know, that's kind of.

• 1:03:57Jason Bateman?

I can't wait to see his show. Lowdown.

• 1:04:00Will Arnett?

I know, me too. He's so incredible that.

• 1:04:01Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, love him.

• 1:04:03Sean Hayes?

And I love that you, I read that you improvise lullabies for your two sons.

• 1:04:07Jason Bateman?

  No way.

• 1:04:07Sean Hayes?

You just sit there with a, you sit there with a guitar and you just make up songs for them?

• 1:04:10Speaker 06

I did. Well, now, it's funny because I did that for a while and then they were like, please stop.

• 1:04:16Jason Bateman?

They got old enough to say stop.

• 1:04:19Speaker 06

Yeah, they just didn't like whenever I would like play guitar or sing and that went away for a bit, but recently in the last year, it's, I just bought this looper pedal. So like, and we've got this, you know, just kind of show you a little bit like we've got like little drums here.

• 1:04:32Will Arnett?

  Look at this.

• 1:04:32Speaker 06

And like guitars, there's the looper pedal down there. Oh, yeah, that's true. And so we've just been making a lot of music together.

• 1:04:41Jason Bateman?

  How old are they?

• 1:04:42Speaker 06

Uh, he's gonna turn six, Mads is gonna turn six on Sunday, and Eugene is eight.

• 1:04:48Jason Bateman?

  Oh my god.

• 1:04:49Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:04:49Jason Bateman?

  Prime time.

• 1:04:50Will Arnett?

I know, it's so good to get them into that young. And Sean, how old were you when you started playing piano?

• 1:04:55Sean Hayes?

  Five.

• 1:04:56Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 1:04:57Will Arnett?

  There you go.

• 1:04:57Sean Hayes?

Yeah. What do they, do they, have they seen Dad's movies or anything?

• 1:05:03Speaker 06

Yeah, yeah, they've seen some of them, they've seen Star Wars, Eugene was actually asking me about Star Wars yesterday.

• 1:05:09Jason Bateman?

How were they with the notes? Are they kind with the notes, or is it?

• 1:05:14Speaker 06

They're a little tough with the notes, I gotta say.

• 1:05:16Jason Bateman?

  Kids are tough.

• 1:05:18Sean Hayes?

Um, I can't, I can't say enough about you and Frankenstein, I just think it's an incredible performance. It's just blew me away.

• 1:05:26Jason Bateman?

I can't say enough about you and everything, Oscar, including this interview. You were fantastic and you were very nice to join us.

• 1:05:32Will Arnett?

  Yeah, you're a class act.

• 1:05:33Jason Bateman?

  Really, really cool.

• 1:05:34Speaker 06

Thanks, guys, and I, Will, I can't wait to see what you did in that movie, man.

• 1:05:38Jason Bateman?

Yeah. He's so good in that. Way to see that, he and Bradley just rocked it.

• 1:05:42Will Arnett?

Thanks, man. Uh, no, you're one of the, you're one of the great, you're one of our greats, man, for real.

• 1:05:47Sean Hayes?

  Yep, you are.

• 1:05:48Will Arnett?

And you're a great dude, we've, we hung out a couple times, you're such a great dude, it's so good to see you, man.

• 1:05:53Jason Bateman?

Yeah, thank you for being here, man. Enjoy the rest of your day, good luck with Frankenstein, we're all gonna go see it.

• 1:05:59Will Arnett?

  What a talent!

• 1:06:03Jason Bateman?

  Thank you, Oscar.

• 1:06:04Sean Hayes?

  Thanks, buddy.

• 1:06:05Speaker 06

  Thanks, guys.

• 1:06:05Will Arnett?

  Thanks, Oscar.

• 1:06:06Jason Bateman?

  Bye, pal.

• 1:06:07Speaker 06

  Bye.

• 1:06:10Jason Bateman?

Well, that was tough saying good night to Oscar there.

• 1:06:14Sean Hayes?

  Ah!

• 1:06:15Jason Bateman?

I could talk to him forever.

• 1:06:19Sean Hayes?

Oh my god, he's in so many of my favorite movies. I mean, that Ex Machina is, is just incredible. But way to see Frankenstein.

• 1:06:26Will Arnett?

I can't wait. Everything that guy does is so incredible.

• 1:06:31Sean Hayes?

And how is somebody so good?

• 1:06:32Will Arnett?

I know, he's so good. It's all I have to say. I'm like blown away. I'm literally, we're all thinking here about all those different performances. You're like, oh yeah, he's so good in that. Oh, he's so good in that.

• 1:06:44Jason Bateman?

Do you think it's something in the water at Juilliard? Or do you think they come in, they come in already talented?

• 1:06:49Will Arnett?

I think they do a pretty good job of vetting and, you know. But what we should do is we should do an episode where we have the people from Juilliard who never did shit.

• 1:06:59Jason Bateman?

  They are bright.

• 1:07:00Will Arnett?

  Right, and have them on.

• 1:07:02Jason Bateman?

We were right. Or the people that didn't make it in, you know.

• 1:07:04Will Arnett?

Or the people that didn't make, well, it's us. So they've got three of us.

• 1:07:09Jason Bateman?

  There's the first three.

• 1:07:11Will Arnett?

  Doesn't get shittier than us.

• 1:07:12Sean Hayes?

Do you think they, yeah, do you think they do like, do you think they teach people musicals in Juilliard?

• 1:07:18Will Arnett?

Like what? Like, can you think of any other top of your head?

• 1:07:21Sean Hayes?

Like maybe like Bye Bye Birdie.

• 1:07:24Will Arnett?

Why don't you commit to it?

• 1:07:25Sean Hayes?

  Oh, Bye Bye Birdie.

• 1:07:28Will Arnett?

  Bye Bye.

• 1:07:29Jason Bateman?

  Bye Birdie.

• 1:07:31Will Arnett?

That was a really short outro. Smartless.

• 1:07:40Will Arnett?

  Smartless.

• 1:07:46Will Arnett?

Smartless is 100% organic and artisanally handcrafted by Michael Grant Terry, Rob Armjarv, and Bennett Barbaco.

• 1:07:58Will Arnett?
