This episode of Smartless is sponsored by Google Book. So the other day, I wanted to make invitations for my dog Ricky's birthday party. And I've got three things open on my laptop. An adorable photo of Ricky, a picture of a birthday cake, and the RSVP details. Thing is, as much as I look like one, I'm not a canine birthday party invitation designer. That's where Google Book comes in. It's a whole new kind of laptop with a feature called Magic Pointer. I just click the photos and different elements on my screen, and boom, Magic Pointer designs a customized birthday party invitation for Ricky. • 2:49Jason Bateman?

I'm so good, Sean. How are you?

• 2:52Will Arnett?

Are we actually, are we actually doing this? Are we talking, are we having a business meeting about, uh?

• 2:57Jason Bateman?

  No, I think, I think we're-

• 2:58Will Arnett?

  We're doing cold opens.

• 2:59Jason Bateman?

  I think we're rolling. We're, we're literally rolling.

• 3:02Sean Hayes?

This is a cold open right now.

• 3:03Jason Bateman?

  The listeners are listening.

• 3:04Will Arnett?

Okay, cuz we're not, we're not doing another show for another couple of weeks. So I'm just, anyway, welcome to Smartless.

• 3:08Jason Bateman?

  Here it comes.

• 3:27Jason Bateman?

Oh, wait, what's sus mean? Any, uh, any, any, any people in your-

• 3:31Will Arnett?

  Suspect.

• 3:32Jason Bateman?

Right? That's one of, that's one of the new ones that kids are saying, right?

• 3:35Will Arnett?

Not, not new. God, you're embarrassing yourself.

• 3:37Jason Bateman?

Riz, Riz is not new, right? That's a couple of years old.

• 3:40Will Arnett?

  Really, really bad.

• 3:41Jason Bateman?

Is flexi a new one? You guys?

• 3:44Sean Hayes?

Flexi could be good. What, like, what's flexi mean? Like flexible?

• 3:47Jason Bateman?

Yeah. And then what did I hear was, um, oh, zesty is gay. Is that right? Is that the new one?

• 3:54Sean Hayes?

  Sure, I've never heard that.

• 3:55Jason Bateman?

If something is zesty? Will? Have you heard the boy saying that?

• 3:58Will Arnett?

  Sorry.

• 4:02Jason Bateman?

Guys, I've got to keep up. We have to record soon. We're gonna start the podcast. And I just wanna make sure I've got my-

• 4:08Will Arnett?

Watching you and hearing you get old in front of me is just astounding.

• 4:13Jason Bateman?

You should have heard the sounds I made trying to get out of the bed this morning. Super old.

• 4:18Sean Hayes?

  Like-

• 4:18Will Arnett?

  You, you-

• 4:19Jason Bateman?

And like a rogue fart. Just like, "Ah, fuck it. I'm back."

• 4:25Will Arnett?

Boy, you're gonna wish you hadn't said that with our guest. Hey, um-

• 4:28Jason Bateman?

  No, is it respectable?

• 4:30Will Arnett?

Yeah, it's very respectable. Very, very-

• 4:32Jason Bateman?

  Let's start over.

• 4:33Will Arnett?

  She's very classy.

• 4:34Jason Bateman?

God damn it. I'm sorry, surprise guest.

• 4:37Will Arnett?

No, it's good. And JB, I would say that you started me off on the whole, like, every time you would get out of your chair, by the way, not even when you were old. When you were like 33, you'd go, "Ugh."

• 4:49Jason Bateman?

You gotta make a sound to lock in the core.

• 4:51Will Arnett?

I know, and somehow I got into that years ago. Yeah, you do, "Hoi."

• 4:57Sean Hayes?

Chugi- well, but you know what chugi is, right? Chugi is a word the kids use to describe someone or something that's outdated or trying too hard to be trendy or lacking originality.

• 5:07Will Arnett?

Well, you're reading, you look that up.

• 5:09Sean Hayes?

I just looked it up while you were talking. I was like-

• 5:11Will Arnett?

Yeah, but once you look it up, it's gone.

• 5:12Jason Bateman?

What was the prompt? Hey, what are the kids saying?

• 5:15Sean Hayes?

  Absolutely.

• 5:16Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 5:18Sean Hayes?

Absolutely, that's what the prompt was.

• 5:20Jason Bateman?

  Sean-

• 5:20Sean Hayes?

Um, wait, what about, oh, by the way, the other night at the, this is, what's today? What's today? Wednesday?

• 5:28Jason Bateman?

  Tuesday.

• 5:28Sean Hayes?

No, today's Tuesday. Sunday, the center seat in the front row of the play. The girl, this girl, just, I could tell she was just a single ticket. She just kept, her head was-

• 5:43Jason Bateman?

She was an narcoleptic. Hard to get, hard to get a date.

• 5:46Sean Hayes?

I don't know, yeah. She kept nodding off, and so at the bows, I pointed right to her, and I just, and I mouthed, I go, "You gotta go ni- you gotta go ni-ni."

• 5:55Jason Bateman?

  Oh shit, Sean!

• 5:58Sean Hayes?

I did. I pointed right to her, the whole cast, we were laughing on stage. And I'm like, you gotta go, Nai Nai.

• 6:05Jason Bateman?

  Oh, fuck.

• 6:06Sean Hayes?

  Are you Tai Tai?

• 6:07Jason Bateman?

Oh, and was she embarrassed, or did she give you the finger?

• 6:10Sean Hayes?

She just kept looking at me clapping.

• 6:12Jason Bateman?

  Clapping?

• 6:13Sean Hayes?

And she's like, she didn't realize I was, I'm looking right at her, but she didn't realize it.

• 6:18Jason Bateman?

Yeah, well, she probably has an issue picking up on social cues and grabbing proper rest.

• 6:24Sean Hayes?

And definitely proper rest. It's like a very expensive nap.

• 6:29Jason Bateman?

Yeah, yeah. Did you maybe look at your performance?

• 6:33Will Arnett?

  How was, how did she?

• 6:35Sean Hayes?

I thought about the whole time.

• 6:36Will Arnett?

Was she, was she normal, or was she chopped? Did she look chopped?

• 6:39Sean Hayes?

  What's chopped mean?

• 6:40Jason Bateman?

What'd you just look up with?

• 6:41Will Arnett?

Oh, you guys don't, oh, you guys don't know chopped?

• 6:43Sean Hayes?

  Oh, God, what is chopped?

• 6:44Will Arnett?

This is a real one. You're kind of, kind of, a little busted, a little busted up, a little chopped.

• 6:49Jason Bateman?

  You're not even reading that.

• 6:50Will Arnett?

  No.

• 6:51Jason Bateman?

So, did that come from Archie or Abel?

• 6:54Will Arnett?

  Listen, I'm, look.

• 6:55Jason Bateman?

No, no, no, you're not getting.

• 6:59Will Arnett?

  So, I'm in with the...

• 7:01Jason Bateman?

Who gave you that? Archie or Abel?

• 7:04Will Arnett?

Dude, all of our friends, my friends and Archie's friends and Abel's friends, we're all, because I hang, because we're all young dudes.

• 7:11Will Arnett?

So, we're kind of in the same friend group.

• 7:14Jason Bateman?

And do you guys, do you guys say, hey, this is a great, this is a great new flavor of gum, you should try it?

• 7:19Will Arnett?

Or you should hear it, is what I usually say.

• 7:21Jason Bateman?

Spit it out of your mouth.

• 7:23Will Arnett?

I know, I always forget that I've got it going on.

• 7:25Sean Hayes?

Why do you, but you always chew gum?

• 7:27Jason Bateman?

Wait, is that, is that the Nicorette gum? Is that what it was on it?

• 7:29Will Arnett?

Well, truth be told, I've got some Zin, I've got, I've got the little nicotine pouch in.

• 7:35Sean Hayes?

Is that another word the kids are using?

• 7:36Jason Bateman?

Because if we're getting free shit, I like this David Power bar, guys. The folks at David, um, I'm gonna give you, I'm gonna give you my address a little later in the side chat.

• 7:48Will Arnett?

The folks at David, Sean, anything, any kind of hot fudge or ice cream that you need to?

• 7:53Sean Hayes?

Haagen Dazs, I love Haagen Dazs.

• 7:56Will Arnett?

  Do you?

• 7:57Sean Hayes?

  I do, I can't, I can't eat too much of it anymore.

• 7:59Will Arnett?

We like McConnell's, we like McConnell's.

• 8:00Sean Hayes?

Yes, we like McConnell's too, as well.

• 8:03Will Arnett?

A lot, we like them a lot. And obviously Hyundai, J M C.

• 8:08Sean Hayes?

Do you want to hear a quick joke?

• 8:10Will Arnett?

Laura Piana, Rolex in that chance. Okay, guys.

• 8:13Sean Hayes?

Wait, do you want, wait, a real quick joke, a real quick joke. Ready?

• 8:19Jason Bateman?

  So gross.

• 8:21Will Arnett?

  Go ahead, Chuck.

• 8:21Jason Bateman?

  I apologize, everybody.

• 8:23Sean Hayes?

A dwarf psychic just escaped prison.

• 8:26Jason Bateman?

  Come on, really?

• 8:27Sean Hayes?

Yeah, there's a small, medium, at large.

• 8:30Jason Bateman?

There's a small, medium, at large.

• 8:33Will Arnett?

  Large.

• 8:33Jason Bateman?

I feel like you work on your reading of that.

• 8:35Will Arnett?

Okay, I heard a really quick one. This guy's going down the road.

• 8:38Jason Bateman?

  There he is.

• 8:39Will Arnett?

Okay, and he gets to a T in the road, and he doesn't know which way to go. He's kind of lost, and he goes to the right. And all of a sudden, his car breaks down. He goes in front, he lifts up the hood. He's trying to figure out what's wrong, and he hears, "It's the alternator." And he looks up, there's a horse there. He goes, "What the hell?" Talking horse. So he goes down, looks at the car again, he can't figure it out, and he hears, "It's the alternator." Looks back at the horse, he's like, "What the..." So he drives the alternator, tightens a few screws, starts right up, and he goes, "Oh, man." So he drives to the nearest bar. He gets in the bar, and he says to the barman, he says, "Give me two large brandy," and he just downs it. He says, "Give me another large brandy," and he downs it, and the barman goes, "Ho, ho, ho, you okay, man?" He goes, "Yeah." He goes, "I'm just driving here. I was lost. I hit a T in the road. I went to fix my car, and this horse, this talking horse,

• 9:21Will Arnett?

you know, I decided to go right, and I came upon this horse, and he said that it was the alternator." And he goes, "Oh, man, good thing you didn't go left." He goes, "Why?" He goes, "'Cause there's a horse over there that doesn't know anything about cars."

• 9:35Will Arnett?

  Come on!

• 9:37Jason Bateman?

Come on, where are we going?

• 9:38Sean Hayes?

  I know.

• 9:38Jason Bateman?

Are we going into fucking choke hell?

• 9:40Will Arnett?

  You didn't like that?

• 9:41Jason Bateman?

  'Cause I'm already there.

• 9:42Will Arnett?

You didn't like that? There's a horse over there that doesn't know anything about cars.

• 9:46Jason Bateman?

  Where's the punchline?

• 9:47Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 9:48Will Arnett?

  That's it.

• 9:49Jason Bateman?

That's fucking terrible. We're gonna leave that in, we're not gonna cut it, 'cause everyone needs to know that sometimes Will clanks it. It happens rarely.

• 9:57Will Arnett?

You didn't like it, that one? I love it. I think it's cute. All right, so our guest, our guest, uh...

• 10:03Jason Bateman?

Couple of, couple of pieces of string walk into a bar, and they, and they, they sit down on the stools, and the, and the one piece of string says, the bartender says, "Give us a couple of beers." The bartender says, "We don't fucking serve string in here." And the two pieces of string look at each other, "Come on, let's get out of here." So they walk outside, and one piece of string says, the other piece of string, "Quick, tie yourself around me." He goes, "What are you doing? Just tie yourself around me, come on." Ties himself around, they hop back in there, they jump up on one stool. And says, "Give us a couple of beers." He goes, "Hey, aren't you those two pieces of string I just kicked out of here?" The guy says, "Afraid not."

• 10:39Will Arnett?

  Ahhh!

• 10:41Jason Bateman?

  Okay?

• 10:42Will Arnett?

  Ahhh!

• 10:43Jason Bateman?

So that's up there with your shit horse joke, but it's slightly better. It's a little-

• 10:47Will Arnett?

Good thing it didn't go left, there's a horse over there that doesn't know anything about cars.

• 10:50Jason Bateman?

  Know anything about cars?

• 10:53Jason Bateman?

  Well, Sean's laughing.

• 10:54Sean Hayes?

  God.

• 10:55Jason Bateman?

Sean's just having fun. Let's see if our surprise guest is doing some of this crap.

• 10:58Will Arnett?

Imagine a horse, imagine like, okay, you know, and it, okay, so-

• 11:02Jason Bateman?

By the way, Franny is eating up Boj- oh no, is it, no, it's Maple. She's eating up Bojack Horseman.

• 11:07Will Arnett?

  Inappropriate for her age.

• 11:08Jason Bateman?

But apparently, this is a great show. This is a, this is an animated show on the Netflix?

• 11:14Will Arnett?

  Oh my god.

• 11:15Sean Hayes?

  Oh my god.

• 11:16Jason Bateman?

Was it, did you just get going?

• 11:18Will Arnett?

  I tell you-

• 11:18Jason Bateman?

Well, I haven't heard anything about it.

• 11:19Will Arnett?

I tell you who's been going for a long time is our guest.

• 11:21Jason Bateman?

  Oh, nice.

• 11:23Will Arnett?

She's worked with everybody from, uh, from, we're talking, this is primo, A-list, iconic, she's gonna hate me for saying this, but it's true, uh, actor. She has been, she's worked with everybody from Pacino, De Niro, Nicholson. She's been nominated for three Academy Awards. You know, she's been a queen, a catwoman, a dangerous liaison.

• 11:46Jason Bateman?

  Did I do it?

• 11:46Will Arnett?

  Yes, it's Michelle Pfeiffer!

• 11:47Jason Bateman?

How did you do it so fast?

• 11:48Will Arnett?

  How did you get that?

• 11:49Jason Bateman?

I'm just connected to the universe.

• 11:52Will Arnett?

  Michelle Pfeiffer, reveal yourself.

• 11:53Jason Bateman?

  Good morning, oh, she's asleep.

• 11:55Will Arnett?

  She's so mad.

• 11:57Will Arnett?

  She's so bored.

• 11:59Jason Bateman?

  Good morning, what a pleasure.

• 12:01Speaker 03

Good morning, you got it so fast.

• 12:03Jason Bateman?

Yeah, well, you know, there's not that many incredible-

• 12:07Will Arnett?

  I said icon.

• 12:08Jason Bateman?

Icons in the world, male or female. You're right there at the top.

• 12:12Will Arnett?

  Hi, Michelle.

• 12:13Speaker 03

  Hey, hi, how are you?

• 12:15Will Arnett?

  I'm great, how are you?

• 12:16Speaker 03

Oh, I'm good, getting ready to go back to Montana.

• 12:20Jason Bateman?

  For what? For some-

• 12:22Speaker 03

  For some more Madison.

• 12:23Jason Bateman?

  More Madison.

• 12:24Will Arnett?

So, Michelle, uh, I wanted to start by saying, first of all, I had such a great time. I did a couple of days with you on the Madison, which was super fun.

• 12:34Jason Bateman?

He came home and raved about you, Michelle.

• 12:36Will Arnett?

  I did, I did.

• 12:37Jason Bateman?

  He did.

• 12:38Speaker 03

  It was, you know, I-

• 12:40Will Arnett?

  I gushed.

• 12:41Speaker 03

Ah, fun? Wow. It was, it was, it was, yeah.

• 12:48Jason Bateman?

Are we talking about, we're talking about Will as a scene partner?

• 12:51Speaker 03

No, no, Will was great. And he was very, yeah.

• 12:54Jason Bateman?

So was the director you had issues with?

• 12:55Speaker 03

He was an amazing scene, no, no, love, love, love, love the director, love the show, love the actors. It was just, the scene, our scenes were kind of grueling and we did a lot of takes.

• 13:06Will Arnett?

We did a lot of takes.

• 13:08Speaker 03

  A lot of angles.

• 13:09Will Arnett?

A lot of angles and we had, it was heavy, it was just the two of us for about two days.

• 13:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:13Will Arnett?

And we're just talking at each other for two days.

• 13:16Speaker 03

  Was it only two days?

• 13:17Jason Bateman?

  Was it like contentious?

• 13:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:19Will Arnett?

  Or three, maybe three.

• 13:19Speaker 03

And I was cursing at him and, yeah.

• 13:22Jason Bateman?

Thank you, on behalf of all of us, thank you.

• 13:24Speaker 03

I was throwing the F-bomb around and...

• 13:26Jason Bateman?

I appreciate you not actually using the word on this episode.

• 13:31Will Arnett?

So, Michelle, I went all the way back, so in anticipation of having you on the show, which this had been a long time coming and actually we were gonna have you a long time ago and then, uh, schedule and things that, you know, prevented us from having you a long time ago. And I've wanted to get into, one of the things I love when I look up, it says, and I wanted to talk, ask you about this, the first, your first television credit ever was Fantasy Island, is that true?

• 13:55Jason Bateman?

  Oh, no way.

• 13:56Will Arnett?

  Ah.

• 13:57Jason Bateman?

  That's cool.

• 13:58Sean Hayes?

  What a dream.

• 13:59Speaker 03

I had, I had one line.

• 14:02Will Arnett?

  No way.

• 14:02Speaker 03

I had one line on Fantasy Island, um, and I remember the line.

• 14:08Jason Bateman?

  What is it?

• 14:09Speaker 03

And the line, and the, the episode was the Island of Lost Women.

• 14:14Jason Bateman?

  Sure.

• 14:14Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 14:14Speaker 03

Um, I was one of the lost women and we were all running around in togas.

• 14:18Jason Bateman?

  Can I guess the line?

• 14:19Speaker 03

  Pastel, yes.

• 14:22Jason Bateman?

Here I am. No? And it was the closer? They went to credits after that?

• 14:28Will Arnett?

That was the only episode that Sean skipped.

• 14:30Sean Hayes?

Yeah. I was like, boobs, I'm out.

• 14:34Speaker 03

It was, it was, um, it was, who is he Naomi?

• 14:41Sean Hayes?

Wow, who is he Naomi? And were you referring to, uh, Mr. Rourke?

• 14:45Speaker 03

  It was, who was it?

• 14:48Speaker 03

  Um.

• 14:48Sean Hayes?

  Herbie Villache.

• 14:49Speaker 03

I can't remember who it was.

• 14:50Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 14:51Speaker 03

  And, uh.

• 14:52Will Arnett?

  Good memory.

• 14:52Speaker 03

Yeah, and, and there were no men. I mean, the, the premise is there were no men on the island. And so we were all, we were all lusting over this one man.

• 15:02Jason Bateman?

Mm hmm. Who, oh, but you don't remember who that, that, and that was a guest, guest star?

• 15:06Speaker 03

I don't. You could, well, did you do your homework? Did you look at the credits?

• 15:08Will Arnett?

No, I did, sorry, it didn't say who your.

• 15:09Jason Bateman?

  It's not on Wiki?

• 15:10Speaker 03

I mean, it did say it.

• 15:12Jason Bateman?

Wait, now, Michelle, what, didn't they do a lot of that? Wasn't that done, uh, like on a backlot? Uh, at one of the studios?

• 15:19Speaker 03

  It was.

• 15:20Jason Bateman?

  Like, ew. Universal backlot, maybe?

• 15:22Speaker 03

I'm guessing it was Universal, but it could have been Warner Brothers.

• 15:25Jason Bateman?

You didn't, you didn't, you don't, like, you didn't fly to Hawaii or something, right?

• 15:28Speaker 03

No, yeah, right. No, they flew me to Hawaii. No.

• 15:31Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, no.

• 15:32Speaker 03

No, but I do remember, um, how exciting it was, showed up for work and there was, you know, Honey Wagon.

• 15:41Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 15:41Speaker 03

  All the rooms in it.

• 15:42Jason Bateman?

Well, you're, you were, you were in a Honey Wagon, for sure, with one line.

• 15:45Speaker 03

For sure. You're lucky to even.

• 15:47Will Arnett?

Sean, can you, can you just tell Tracy real quick, Sean's gonna explain to his sister.

• 15:49Sean Hayes?

Yeah, Honey Wagon is, is, it's a trailer where you, where you, as an actor, you hang out before, while they're working on.

• 15:55Will Arnett?

But it's not a full trailer.

• 15:56Speaker 03

And it's divided up into small rooms.

• 15:58Jason Bateman?

Very, very small rooms, and they put you in there like a veal.

• 16:02Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 16:03Jason Bateman?

It's just enough room to turn, you can, you can go to the restroom, brush your teeth, and change your shoes, all, uh, sitting on one seat.

• 16:10Speaker 03

And what more does one need, honestly?

• 16:12Sean Hayes?

  Nothing.

• 16:12Jason Bateman?

  It's very efficient.

• 16:13Speaker 03

But I was very excited because I looked up and there was my name and a star.

• 16:17Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 16:18Will Arnett?

  Ah.

• 16:19Speaker 03

  That's.

• 16:19Will Arnett?

  They knew.

• 16:20Sean Hayes?

  Like, you made it.

• 16:21Speaker 03

That's how long, yeah, yeah, they knew.

• 16:23Sean Hayes?

Well, so, so tell me, like, tell me what, by the way, it's so nice to see you. I think we met a long, long, long time ago, but.

• 16:29Will Arnett?

  She doesn't remember.

• 16:30Sean Hayes?

Just in passing. No, she doesn't remember. Um, but, um, but this is the first time I've gotten to talk to you, so it's such a pleasure. And, um, what was that like when you, the first time when you, so before Fantasy Island, had you been pursuing it? How did you fall into it? Like, how did you get that, that first job?

• 16:47Speaker 03

I had taken theater in high school to avoid having to take an English class. I think it was grammar that I was avoiding. And, um, uh, and I sort of fell into it. And I thought all the theater people were just kind of, you know, geeky.

• 17:02Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, for sure they are.

• 17:04Speaker 03

And anyway, I, I, I just, I mean, I just fit right in. And I, I just sort of fell in love with it. And then anyway, graduated, I didn't think I would ever, in my wildest dreams, become an actor. I just wasn't a part of that. I'd never met an actor. I'd never met a famous person and, um.

• 17:24Jason Bateman?

And your family was, there was no sort of acting connection in your family at all?

• 17:27Speaker 03

Nothing, in fact, my dad was not thrilled at the notion of me doing that.

• 17:32Jason Bateman?

Where were you? Where did you grow up?

• 17:33Speaker 03

Um, uh, in Orange County, not that far away from LA. Um, anyway, so I was, uh, working at Von's supermarket.

• 17:43Sean Hayes?

  I love her.

• 17:43Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 17:44Speaker 03

  And.

• 17:45Jason Bateman?

  Checkout?

• 17:46Speaker 03

  Checkout.

• 17:47Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 17:47Speaker 03

Yeah, and I wasn't a very good checker. I could never balance my cash register.

• 17:51Jason Bateman?

Yeah, and those are the days where you had, you had, you had to type in the price.

• 17:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:55Jason Bateman?

And you didn't just scan stuff.

• 17:57Speaker 03

Those were the days, right, way back then.

• 18:00Jason Bateman?

Get some skills. Now, did you not go to college and like study up on some, you know, tangible something? You could really rely on like a real, or were you just like, I'm all in? And if this doesn't work, I'm going back to slinging melons?

• 18:14Speaker 03

I had, I had, uh, started a trade school. I was doing court reporting.

• 18:19Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 18:20Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 18:20Speaker 03

And that made me crazy in the head.

• 18:23Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 18:23Speaker 03

Because you have to sort of learn a whole new language.

• 18:26Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 18:27Speaker 03

And, and then you have to type it out like this.

• 18:30Jason Bateman?

  What is stenographer?

• 18:31Speaker 03

  Stenographer.

• 18:32Jason Bateman?

Wait, so you know how to do that?

• 18:34Speaker 03

Not anymore, but what would happen was after about a year of studying that, every time I would talk to people, my hands would start going like this. And my brain is trans, and I'm transcribing every single thing.

• 18:47Jason Bateman?

  And it's not a qwerty keyboard, is it? It's, it's, it's.

• 18:49Sean Hayes?

  No, it's like a.

• 18:50Jason Bateman?

  Different kind of keyboard.

• 18:51Speaker 03

Totally different, you have to learn a completely different language.

• 18:56Jason Bateman?

It's a fully different language. Did it help you memorize dialogue going forward?

• 19:00Speaker 03

  No, I mean, maybe.

• 19:02Jason Bateman?

  Good question though, Will.

• 19:03Will Arnett?

Thanks. I was just thinking, I just think it would be funny. I wonder if you ever lost a job. You know, you said you took acting because you didn't want to do this grammar class. I wonder if you ever lost a job, they're like, "We really wanted to hire her, but her grammar was terrible."

• 19:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:18Jason Bateman?

  Doesn't speak good.

• 19:19Sean Hayes?

I've been, since you popped on our little screen here today to talk, it's really hard for me to hold, I have, you know, Grease 2 is one of my favorite movies of all time.

• 19:28Speaker 03

  Really?

• 19:29Sean Hayes?

And I'm sure you get it all the time, and I'm so sorry, but me and my sister watched it a thousand times. I know every word.

• 19:36Will Arnett?

  My sister died.

• 19:37Sean Hayes?

  My sister and I.

• 19:38Will Arnett?

  Look who else has died.

• 19:40Jason Bateman?

Michelle was about to correct him, but she was.

• 19:43Sean Hayes?

Anyway, I just, I just, it was a huge part of my childhood, Grease 2, and we would just watch it over and over and over again. I know every line of dialogue and everywhere. So it's really cool that you were a part of my...

• 19:55Jason Bateman?

What's your favorite part in the film?

• 19:56Speaker 03

Isn't that cool? Like, didn't, I think one of my favorite parts of the film is a girl for all seasons, because it's so ridiculous.

• 20:03Sean Hayes?

"I'll be your girl for all seasons."

• 20:05Speaker 03

  And I'm dressed as a...

• 20:06Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 20:07Speaker 03

  As a Christmas tree.

• 20:08Sean Hayes?

  Absolutely, absolutely.

• 20:10Speaker 03

And how many, Sean, how many times have you reenacted Cool Rider on a ladder?

• 20:14Sean Hayes?

  A thousand times.

• 20:15Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 20:15Sean Hayes?

I need to see, oh, oh, oh.

• 20:16Speaker 03

You know, there's somebody online who did that, actually, and I reposted it.

• 20:20Sean Hayes?

  Oh, really?

• 20:20Speaker 03

There was a guy who like reenacts all, every scene.

• 20:24Sean Hayes?

Do you get that a lot in your life, that people just sort of know, it's like a cult, like, classic, like, people?

• 20:29Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 20:31Will Arnett?

Is that the thing people do the most from Grease 2, like, doing, going outlandish and recreating stuff?

• 20:36Speaker 03

  Uh, you mean?

• 20:38Will Arnett?

Like, do people come up and quote lines, or like, is that the one that people go, "Oh, my God, I love, like, Sean," like, sort of fanboying?

• 20:44Speaker 03

Um, that is, uh, that's a big one, and I guess probably, uh, well, and then you've got all the people quoting Scarface, which is crazy.

• 20:56Will Arnett?

  Scarface, I mean, Scarface.

• 20:57Speaker 03

But mostly, they're quoting Tony Montana, "Not really me," and Fabulous Baker Boys.

• 21:03Sean Hayes?

  Of course, of course.

• 21:04Speaker 03

What about that, Sean? Have you sung on top of a piano?

• 21:07Sean Hayes?

  Of course.

• 21:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 21:09Sean Hayes?

I take a nap on top of the piano.

• 21:10Will Arnett?

Oh, my God. I remember when that movie came out. I love those guys too, so much. I love Bo and Jeff Bridges, what great dudes, and, I mean, just the best. That movie was so good.

• 21:20Speaker 03

  The best, the best.

• 21:23Jason Bateman?

And we will be right back.

• 21:27Will Arnett?

• 25:49Jason Bateman?

And now, back to the show.

• 25:52Jason Bateman?

Michelle, you could go on and on and on with all of the incredible things that you have done. Do you take the time ever privately to kind of give yourself a little pat on the back for the longevity, the amount of time you have spent in a relevant position in an industry that's famous for its unpredictability and it's so sort of fickle and like you have been incredibly well-respected and sought after for probably five times longer than your average actor or actress. It's just admirable.

• 26:31Speaker 03

Don't you find it, I find it, first of all, no. I don't.

• 26:38Jason Bateman?

  You should.

• 26:38Speaker 03

I'm always surprised, actually, to hear people say that. But I also find today it's really hard to feel relevant in any way because it does feel like, you know. Everybody's famous. Everybody's sort of getting their 15 minutes and you kind of, so it doesn't, I don't know, it doesn't feel that way, honestly.

• 26:58Jason Bateman?

Right, but it turns out, it seems like there's, well, there's certainly enough room for you, right? You are still doing that which you want at the pace that you want, it seems, from the outside.

• 27:10Will Arnett?

I mean, you've got three, you've got The Madison, you've got your show on your Apple TV, you've got a movie coming out as well, right, for Amazon? Like, you're busy.

• 27:19Speaker 03

Well, yeah, I'm a little too busy. I didn't really plan, look, I'm so grateful, I'm so grateful because I love acting. I've never lost. In fact, I probably enjoy it more now than I ever have because.

• 27:35Will Arnett?

  Really?

• 27:35Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm sort of more relaxed with it. I actually didn't, you know, when I had all of this work, plus I have a fragrance company that I founded like seven years ago. And so, you know, at a time when I wasn't working all this much, so I don't really have time to be thinking about anything but the task at hand. But when I had all these... Acting jobs coming up. I thought, okay. Okay. How are you going to manage this and have a life?

• 28:16Speaker 03

Because that hasn't always been easy for me. I'm a all or nothing kind of girl. And when I approach things, and I always like taking on challenges. And then I get into it and it's sort of sink or swim. And for whatever reason, I kind of feed on that. Maybe not so healthy. I don't know. But so my approach has been, this gets back to why am I enjoying it more now than ever, is I don't have time to, nor the desire to go that deep for that long. And not be present.

• 29:01Speaker 03

You know, I really, I realize, you know, I have a finite amount of time left. And I might announce on this show that I became a grandmother last year.

• 29:18Jason Bateman?

  Excellent. Well done. That's awesome.

• 29:21Speaker 03

I've been very quiet about it. And it is.

• 29:26Jason Bateman?

  The greatest, right? Heaven.

• 29:28Speaker 03

  It's heaven. It's ridiculous. It's.

• 29:32Jason Bateman?

Congratulations, by the way. That's pretty cool.

• 29:34Speaker 03

And if I had known that I was going to be a grandmother, I wouldn't have taken on so much work. But I've enjoyed everything and I'm really grateful. I mean, I've loved, I love each of these projects. And so the weird thing is that sort of giving up that angst about the process has freed me up. And I feel in some ways has made me better.

• 30:02Jason Bateman?

You mean the angst about the process of actually studying to play that character, doing the research, yada, yada.

• 30:08Speaker 03

Oh, I have to know this and I have to.

• 30:10Jason Bateman?

  And no longer.

• 30:11Speaker 03

You know, and I have to free us. I have to personalize this and I have to, you know. And yes, yes, there's a certain amount of that you have to do. And that's important.

• 30:20Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 30:20Speaker 03

But then. You know, and then you start though, but there's something amazing for me about showing up. And it's about discovery.

• 30:32Sean Hayes?

Yes, and also I bet you bring more of yourself now than ever before. Is that correct?

• 30:37Speaker 03

I think you might be right.

• 30:40Will Arnett?

  Yeah, boy, that's a first.

• 30:41Speaker 03

  For better or worse, Sean.

• 30:44Sean Hayes?

Yeah, but I mean, like, it makes you fearless, more fearless.

• 30:47Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I'll bet, Michelle, you would say for better, right? Because if we're doing things correctly, which it sounds like you are, you become a better and better version of yourself as you get older. And as an actor, sort of by a consequence, you're bringing more interesting abilities to pretending to be other people. So I'll bet your work has gotten even better, right? I mean, do you watch your own stuff? I mean, can you allow yourself to watch yourself and go, that's a little bit better than what I did five years ago or 10 years ago?

• 31:21Speaker 03

It's hard for me to like my work and watch it. And that's the other thing is, I used to see every day's daily, the work before, had to see what I was doing, had to see where I was at, had to know, do I need to make a shift? Do I need to?

• 31:37Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 31:39Speaker 03

  And I don't. I just don't anymore.

• 31:42Jason Bateman?

What happened? When did that change?

• 31:45Speaker 03

It gradually started shifting. Actually, that was a while ago because I was just torturing myself.

• 31:57Jason Bateman?

So you didn't like what you were seeing? Or you got more confident in, oh, you know what? I keep checking, but it's fine.

• 32:01Will Arnett?

Or were you doing it to punish yourself on a certain level, do you think? Is that what you mean?

• 32:06Speaker 03

I'm just very, I'm just super critical.

• 32:08Jason Bateman?

Yeah. Okay, so then you left it and you're like, I'm just gonna be mean to myself, so I don't even wanna look?

• 32:14Speaker 03

No, mean to my, yes, yes. Yes. Because I know, no matter what I see, I'm going to...

• 32:25Jason Bateman?

  Find the negative.

• 32:27Speaker 03

I'm gonna find the negative and I'm gonna show up the next day and do it the best way I know how.

• 32:35Jason Bateman?

  Anyway.

• 32:35Speaker 03

I'm always gonna give 110%. I'm not gonna...

• 32:40Will Arnett?

Well, I guess the danger of looking at it and caring is if you start watching that and you start relying on that, you run the risk of dragging that and your opinion of that to the next day and it affects what you do, not in the way that's constructive, but potentially going, "Oh, I want to avoid this, this, this, and this," and now you're in some weird loop, you know what I mean?

• 33:02Speaker 03

Yeah, and the other thing about it too is that then you become, rather than something happening spontaneously because you're just going with your instincts and you're in the moment, you start copying yourself. "Oh, that was really good, that was a really good moment."

• 33:19Will Arnett?

Ah, and you try to regenerate it.

• 33:21Speaker 03

And then you're not in the moment anymore, which is what made it so good. And also, what could have made it so bad, but you know that thing about like a painter, like when you paint, sometimes you go, "Okay, but those moments where you missed led to the good moment." And it's like a painter, it's the same thing, because they paint and you have your painting and you have an idea and you start painting and then you make a mistake. And then you have to go about, "How am I gonna fix this?" Well, you don't have a plan how to fix it because you didn't plan on making a mistake. So now you have to, you have to just figure that out and it ultimately typically will

• 34:03Speaker 03

end up being the favorite part of your painting. And so I think when you're creating, I think that's all part of the process and so just...

• 34:12Will Arnett?

I love that you paint, like, of course you're painting, you could be cooler, everything you say, one thing's cooler than the next. Wait, Michelle, you work...

• 34:20Speaker 03

By the way, I have a fragrance called Dave.

• 34:24Will Arnett?

  Dave.

• 34:25Jason Bateman?

  Come on.

• 34:26Speaker 03

  Dave.

• 34:27Jason Bateman?

Well, maybe Dave should meet the David Powerbar.

• 34:28Speaker 03

  Maybe they should be friends.

• 34:30Will Arnett?

The Powerbar, outta here, we're talking about Michelle's fragrance, what is wrong with you?

• 34:35Jason Bateman?

Well, I do think before we move on, we should, Sean, I really think you should track down the gal in the front row and ask her how you can fix your mistake, you know?

• 34:43Will Arnett?

  Oh, no.

• 34:44Jason Bateman?

And maybe really straighten out your performance and stop putting people to bed. I totally will do that.

• 34:50Speaker 03

Wait, Sean, can't you get in serious trouble, like if you're on the stage and you break and you like start talking to the audience, isn't that sort of like a...

• 34:59Will Arnett?

During the curtain call, you're fired. He hit fuck it 10 years ago, don't worry.

• 35:03Jason Bateman?

He's been trying to get fired off an Oscar for it.

• 35:08Sean Hayes?

No, no, I noticed her dozing off for the first hour of the play while I'm in it.

• 35:14Speaker 03

  I understand.

• 35:14Sean Hayes?

And then I waited till the end of the, at the bows when everybody clapping.

• 35:18Speaker 03

Oh, wasn't in the middle of your performance?

• 35:21Sean Hayes?

  No, no, no, no.

• 35:22Jason Bateman?

Was it the applause that woke her up?

• 35:24Sean Hayes?

I think it was the applause that woke her up.

• 35:26Speaker 03

  That's funny.

• 35:27Will Arnett?

When I come next week, I'm gonna bring a pillow. It sounds like that's what I need to do. Wait, Michelle, I was gonna ask you, you know, you've worked with so many great directors over the years. I mean, some, just some of the all-time greats. And were you, was that a time, was there a time when you were just director-driven? Or has that shifted? What do you, what do you look for when you're, when you're deciding now?

• 35:52Speaker 03

Directors, super important. I mean, initially, you just want a job. And, and then, once you start getting work, and then it's like, obviously, just choosing the best of what is put in front of you. And hopefully, you're able to get, you know, pickier and pickier as you go along. And then, and then, yeah, when you're in a position of, where you have that kind of choice, it's a tough one. Like, is it script? Is it director? I mean, a lot of, I've seen really talented directors make, I would not, maybe masterpieces, but great films out of not-so-great scripts. And then I've seen, maybe in the wrong hands, a really great script, just, so.

• 36:37Jason Bateman?

  Directors, so important.

• 36:38Speaker 03

In some ways, I think I would, if I had to choose, I would say, I would say director. And then I think, the part is, you know, does it kind of just speak to you? I mean, for me, I can hear it. I can hear it. I can see it. I'm very visual.

• 36:55Jason Bateman?

Does it matter if it's the lead, or seven, six, seven, eight, nine?

• 36:58Sean Hayes?

Down the call sheet if it's a direct.

• 37:00Speaker 03

  Yeah, it doesn't matter.

• 37:00Will Arnett?

  Six, seven, eight, nine.

• 37:02Speaker 03

  In fact.

• 37:03Sean Hayes?

Now you're getting into honey wagon territory.

• 37:07Speaker 03

You know, I recently have especially like, you know, working on a Marvel movie or something. And you have a tent on the stage. And you're in a costume, you can't pee, you know, you can't go to the bathroom in. Unless you and it's, you know, I've had to beg for a honey wagon sized room. I'm like, just, I just need a place to go sit and work on my stuff. That has a little tiny toilet, you know?

• 37:37Sean Hayes?

  Right, right, right.

• 37:38Speaker 03

And couldn't have been happier, so.

• 37:41Sean Hayes?

Right, right, right. Let me ask you something, this might be like, you don't, we don't have to go there if you don't want to, but having your breadth of work over literally decades, like amazing work, one after another. Have you seen a change for the better in either roles for women from the beginning of her career to now? Or how being a woman in the business has changed at all? Have you experienced any of that yourself? Or have you just been like, no, it's been, I've just been sailing along.

• 38:13Jason Bateman?

Before you even answer that, here's one thing that I just find incredibly impressive about you. And you don't have a lot of company in this.

• 38:23Jason Bateman?

You have been able to have your talent as an actor overshine your extraordinary beauty from day one.

• 38:33Sean Hayes?

  Absolutely.

• 38:34Jason Bateman?

Which extends into, you know, I would imagine so many interesting roles now. As one gets older, the roles get better. And since you never traded just on your looks, you, there's no, there's no, there's no

• 38:52Jason Bateman?

end of relevance there. Like it was always about the talent with you.

• 38:55Sean Hayes?

  That's right.

• 38:56Speaker 03

Jason, that was so delicately walked through and so impressive.

• 39:01Will Arnett?

I'm in deep sweat. You're so close to trouble on either side.

• 39:04Sean Hayes?

  I know.

• 39:05Speaker 03

He is teetering. I'm like, he is so teetering on the edge.

• 39:09Jason Bateman?

Did I make it? Did I shut up in time?

• 39:11Speaker 03

  So impressed. Wow.

• 39:14Sean Hayes?

I was just more to the point.

• 39:15Speaker 03

  It was beautiful.

• 39:16Will Arnett?

I was gonna say, I was just gonna say-

• 39:17Speaker 03

How does it feel being an aging actress in Hollywood? Why don't you just say it, Sean?

• 39:21Will Arnett?

No, Michelle, I was gonna say that I think that you're even cooler than You Are Beautiful, which is saying a lot. That is, that's the truth.

• 39:29Speaker 03

  Am I cool? I'm such a nerd.

• 39:31Will Arnett?

  You're very, very cool.

• 39:31Sean Hayes?

No, I just, like, pick your scandal in the news, in the news over the last 40 years about this business that we're all in.

• 39:39Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 39:39Sean Hayes?

And a lot of the times it has to do, not all the time, but a lot of times it has to do with women. And, and how they've been mistreated.

• 39:46Speaker 03

  It's so bad.

• 39:47Sean Hayes?

And so I didn't know if you could speak to that.

• 39:49Will Arnett?

Sean, are you trying to get headlines for us?

• 39:51Sean Hayes?

  No.

• 39:54Jason Bateman?

Can you get out of the dark water and get into the shallow because turquoise?

• 39:59Speaker 03

Yeah. We just got out of the deep end, Sean. Now there you go, diving back in.

• 40:04Sean Hayes?

  Oh, hi.

• 40:05Speaker 03

Wow, that was a lot to unpack, guys. So where do you want me to start?

• 40:09Sean Hayes?

  This is your time.

• 40:10Will Arnett?

How are the roles seem to you? Better or worse?

• 40:12Speaker 03

Well, you know what? They're better, but they're way better. There's so many, like, and mainly that's due to television and streamers and there's just, the bad news is there's like a ridiculous amount of content out there and, and-

• 40:28Will Arnett?

  Maybe too much?

• 40:29Jason Bateman?

You don't know what to watch.

• 40:29Speaker 03

A lot of it not so good, maybe?

• 40:31Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 40:31Speaker 03

Um, but that's always been the case, right? With, in our industry and now, um, and so, and I feel like, I just feel like so much of the good work, like, the majority of the good work is being done by women. I mean, extraordinary work by women and on television.

• 40:52Sean Hayes?

  I agree.

• 40:53Speaker 03

And so it's keeping us all working. And then I also feel like in terms of performers and entertainment-

• 41:02Speaker 03

There has never been a bigger appreciation for women of my age.

• 41:08Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 41:08Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 41:09Speaker 03

And that's, that's super exciting. And so, yeah, I've seen.

• 41:15Jason Bateman?

But that's what I kind of mean. It's like, I don't think that was the case 20, 30, 40 years ago.

• 41:20Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 41:21Jason Bateman?

• 41:21Speaker 03

And you couldn't do, you couldn't do TV and movies.

• 41:23Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 41:24Will Arnett?

Right, right. Right, right. That's a great point.

• 41:26Speaker 03

You couldn't do a commercial. God forbid you should do some, you should sponsor a product or something. You will never work again in the movies.

• 41:33Will Arnett?

Like, Michelle, like, when you were making, like, let's say, like, 88, was it 88 you made Dangerous Liaisons? Or, and you're making all the, and you're getting nominated. So you're nominated for an Academy Award. And then you call your agent, you go, I'm gonna do this TV series. They'd be like, what, are you out of your mind?

• 41:47Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 41:48Speaker 03

  Right, exactly.

• 41:48Will Arnett?

  Right.

• 41:49Speaker 03

And not even that long ago, you know? I remember like about, oh, maybe 10, maybe it was 10 years ago. I was talking about, I don't know, I got offered some TV show. And I'm like, well, you know, I don't know, it's kind of interesting. And they're like, no, you know, if you do TV, mm-mm.

• 42:05Will Arnett?

  Really?

• 42:06Jason Bateman?

  It was Woody.

• 42:06Speaker 03

  Gotta be something really special.

• 42:08Jason Bateman?

It was Woody and Matthew McConaughey with True Detective, I remember, was the big, like, oh, wow. These guys are.

• 42:14Will Arnett?

  Oh, they changed the.

• 42:15Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I think, I think McConaughey had just won the Oscar, like, five months earlier for Dallas Buyers Club, maybe? And that was like, what the fuck is going on? I really feel like that was, and before that, obviously, Fincher doing House of Cards on Netflix, too. Like, just sort of launching streaming as a place where filmmakers go. So, yeah, it is really, really exciting.

• 42:39Will Arnett?

You don't think it was me doing the sitcom The Millers after I did Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?

• 42:42Jason Bateman?

Well, maybe it's, and let me tell you something. This BoJack thing that I'm hearing is coming, is coming on soon, right?

• 42:47Will Arnett?

Yeah. I feel so responsible. When you say tons of bad stuff, I'm like, God, I'm so responsible for so much of it.

• 42:53Speaker 03

  Oh, trust me. Trust me.

• 42:54Jason Bateman?

  We've all got our.

• 42:55Speaker 03

Yeah, trust me. I've, I've done my share of bad stuff.

• 43:01Will Arnett?

So then, so then what, so now, so now you're sitting here, you're kind of, you're kind of in the catbird seat because you, you, you, you get to kind of pick and choose, you can do whatever you want, you can do TV and film, and you've got a new appreciation for it, and you've, as you said, you've kind of relieved the pressure of, of making yourself crazy. So when you look at, and I guess now being a grandparent, now you're a grandmother. Yeah, domestic life is, is at its zenith. Is life, is, is life work bounds the most important, is that the first decision?

• 43:37Speaker 03

Uh, yeah, yeah, it is. And, you know, now, but it, it obviously wasn't when I committed to do all this work. I didn't know I was going to be a grandmother then, and, you know, I, I thought, wow, it's my time now. I can, I can go do what I want to do, and...

• 43:54Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 43:57Sean Hayes?

  We'll be right back.

• 44:00Sean Hayes?

• 46:01Sean Hayes?

Almost every night at my house is movie night, and that's when I grab the butter Skinny Pop. It's so delicious. Deliciously popped, perfectly seasoned, Skinny Pop. Popular for a reason.

• 46:17Sean Hayes?

  And back to the show.

• 46:20Jason Bateman?

How good are you and your, and your husband at, at, at working out this, this balance? Cause that's, that's a tricky part too, cause you, you're both incredibly busy.

• 46:29Will Arnett?

He's very busy as well, yeah.

• 46:30Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 46:31Sean Hayes?

Well, for my sist, for Tracy.

• 46:34Jason Bateman?

  Please, Sean.

• 46:34Sean Hayes?

Yeah. For my sister, who might not know, your, your husband is David Kelly.

• 46:39Speaker 03

Oh, okay. I gotta say, he's been amazing. And I, I said to him when, again, all this work was coming up, I'm like, I'm like going to Montana and Texas for four months out of the year. I'm like, okay, I'm not doing this unless you're with me. And don't say you're gonna be with me and then come for like a couple of weeks and then go away from it. No, no, you're, you're with me.

• 46:59Will Arnett?

  Right.

• 47:00Speaker 03

  And he's been with me.

• 47:02Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 47:02Speaker 03

And, and I couldn't have, I couldn't have, because he could, he can write anywhere.

• 47:06Jason Bateman?

Right, but he's doing much more than write. He's directing, he's producing, he's doing different stuff.

• 47:11Will Arnett?

  Show running.

• 47:12Speaker 03

  He doesn't direct.

• 47:14Jason Bateman?

Well, sort of by proxy at times, yes. Um, maybe, no, I mean, well, he's.

• 47:20Speaker 03

No, he's pretty, he's pretty, I just worked for, I just worked with him for the, worked for him, uh, with him.

• 47:25Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 47:26Speaker 03

For the first time, really, on, on Margot's Got Money Troubles. And I did, it was, um, so fun. And I was very, I, I've never been really eager to work with him because I so cherish my marriage, and sometimes that's the kiss of death, to work together and don't be on the cover of People magazine together because you'll be divorced next year.

• 47:47Sean Hayes?

  Oh my god.

• 47:49Speaker 03

So, I mean, how many times have we seen that? Right.

• 47:52Jason Bateman?

So it was nerve wracking as it approached, yeah? Did you guys lay down any sort of like, listen, this is how you could trigger me if you do this?

• 48:01Will Arnett?

If the door to my honey wagon is closed.

• 48:03Speaker 03

Well, he sort of set a boundary early on when I was asking maybe too many questions. And, um.

• 48:13Jason Bateman?

Do you really think she'd say that, David?

• 48:15Speaker 03

And he's like, you know, I think that's a good question for the director.

• 48:19Jason Bateman?

  Oh, nice.

• 48:20Speaker 03

After he did that a couple of times, I'm like, okay, I get it. I get it. And that was actually really good. But the truth is, this character is so well written. It's like, I was born to play this part.

• 48:34Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 48:35Speaker 03

She is like a real housewife of Fullerton wannabe.

• 48:43Speaker 03

I grew up in Orange County.

• 48:45Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 48:46Speaker 03

I love, love, love, love her. Her name is Cheyenne, and she works at Bloomingdale's in the cosmetics department.

• 48:53Sean Hayes?

  That's brilliant.

• 48:55Speaker 03

  And she's a single mom.

• 48:56Sean Hayes?

Clearly, clearly, I didn't get it.

• 48:58Speaker 03

  Elle Fanning is my daughter.

• 48:59Sean Hayes?

  I didn't get it.

• 49:01Will Arnett?

  You can move on, Sean.

• 49:01Sean Hayes?

  I just found out.

• 49:02Speaker 03

Any, anywho, so, um, it was also, gosh, how often do you get to work in Los Angeles and stay home?

• 49:10Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 49:10Speaker 03

  I don't know where you guys live. Will, I don't think you're.

• 49:12Jason Bateman?

Are you shooting? You're not shooting. It's like you're going to Montana to shoot.

• 49:15Speaker 03

But I'm not shooting right now.

• 49:17Jason Bateman?

  Okay.

• 49:17Speaker 03

  I'm going to Montana.

• 49:19Jason Bateman?

When you worked with David, it was in LA?

• 49:21Speaker 03

  It was in LA.

• 49:22Jason Bateman?

  Right. Got it. Okay, great.

• 49:23Will Arnett?

So, Michelle, I, sometimes I do this and I ask people who have, as Sean said, such a wide, sort of huge breadth of work. Is there a role? Is there a, not a role, well, maybe a role, role and or film that you did of one of these great films? Is there one? Do you have a favorite? And it's okay.

• 49:45Speaker 03

  I don't.

• 49:47Will Arnett?

  No.

• 49:48Speaker 03

I have, I have, I have a few that are of my favorites. But then it's bad if I don't mention some and then the director's gonna be like, "Oh, you didn't mention mine."

• 49:58Will Arnett?

Let's assume that you love them all. Let's assume you love them all, but you love one.

• 50:02Speaker 03

You know, there's, there's the film that I actually love the most. And then there's the performance that maybe I don't hate.

• 50:10Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 50:11Speaker 03

  And then.

• 50:12Jason Bateman?

  We want this.

• 50:13Speaker 03

There's the, then there's the experience.

• 50:15Jason Bateman?

We want all three of those.

• 50:17Will Arnett?

  All three, all three.

• 50:17Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 50:18Jason Bateman?

All like all three of those.

• 50:19Speaker 03

Experience would be, I think, a toss-up of Married to the Mob. And honestly, Margot's Got Money troubles. It was just a ton of fun. And my favorite film, maybe Baker Boys, maybe?

• 50:38Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 50:39Jason Bateman?

I gotta check that, I've never seen that.

• 50:41Speaker 03

And that might be my favorite performance as well.

• 50:46Jason Bateman?

  Double dip.

• 50:47Will Arnett?

  As well.

• 50:47Speaker 03

  Might be.

• 50:48Sean Hayes?

  So famous, too.

• 50:49Speaker 03

Don't you think that would make a great sequel, like Where Are These People?

• 50:52Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 50:54Speaker 03

  Right?

• 50:54Sean Hayes?

  Yes, that's a great idea.

• 50:56Speaker 03

And I can't get, I can't get Steve to do it, so.

• 51:00Jason Bateman?

  Well.

• 51:00Speaker 03

  Anyway.

• 51:01Jason Bateman?

Just say David will take care of it.

• 51:03Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 51:05Sean Hayes?

Can I ask you, can I just nerd out just for a second?

• 51:07Will Arnett?

Are we going back to Grease too?

• 51:09Sean Hayes?

Yeah, Grease too, just because I never got, just like a couple of questions, because I'm just never gonna happen again in my life.

• 51:13Will Arnett?

Sorry, Michelle, this is where we take questions from fans. Go ahead. Go ahead, caller.

• 51:19Sean Hayes?

No, like, like, what, what was it like, like, what was it like knowing how big the first one was? And then were you like scared to do this, to be in the sequel? Like, to be like, oh, my God, Grease was such a massive thing. No, come on, it was, it was a big deal to me as a kid.

• 51:35Speaker 03

No, it's a really good question. And of course, I was terrified and.

• 51:38Sean Hayes?

Yeah, but you were so good in it. You were so good.

• 51:40Speaker 03

You know, but, you know, look, it's John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John and, you know, and it was, you know, the first one and it was amazing and such a following and so successful. And then you got me and this kid, Mac, they don't know who we are. And, and they're taking out ads that say too hot. And I'm like, don't say that. What if they don't think I'm hot? Okay, like, don't tell them I'm hot, anyway. So it was, it was, it was, uh, yeah.

• 52:11Jason Bateman?

  Was it fun to make?

• 52:12Speaker 03

Yeah, dancing and singing. I loved all that because I, I do love to dance and I love to sing, but I don't consider.

• 52:20Will Arnett?

  Sean, stop sweating.

• 52:25Will Arnett?

It's so, we could see you sweating.

• 52:28Jason Bateman?

We can see the towel just below the frame, Sean.

• 52:30Will Arnett?

God damn it. Cool it off, man.

• 52:36Jason Bateman?

As soon as she mentioned Maxwell Caulfield, it just exploded.

• 52:41Sean Hayes?

By the way, you know, I wanted for you and I stayed for Maxwell.

• 52:44Will Arnett?

  Shot a couple bars.

• 52:46Speaker 03

It was really more about Maxwell.

• 52:48Sean Hayes?

Name a song. I know I have a lot of words.

• 52:49Will Arnett?

Opener. Give us the opener, Sean.

• 52:51Sean Hayes?

Medley. No, what's the opener? What's the opening song? Schools out for, no, is it school? It was about a school. Oh God, I can't remember.

• 52:57Will Arnett?

The Ramones, isn't it? Schools out for summer?

• 52:59Sean Hayes?

Yeah, no, it was, uh, yeah, it was this. It was this. That's right. That's right.

• 53:03Will Arnett?

  Shaking it off.

• 53:05Sean Hayes?

  It was, um, I remember.

• 53:06Speaker 03

I still have my bowling ball.

• 53:07Sean Hayes?

  No, you don't.

• 53:08Speaker 03

I do. And the bowling ball case.

• 53:10Sean Hayes?

  We're gonna score tonight.

• 53:12Speaker 03

  That's it.

• 53:15Sean Hayes?

We're gonna rock, we're gonna roll, we're gonna bop, we're gonna ball, we're gonna score, score, score, score, score.

• 53:20Jason Bateman?

  Oh God.

• 53:21Speaker 03

  So good.

• 53:21Jason Bateman?

  I love it.

• 53:22Speaker 03

  Yay, well done.

• 53:23Jason Bateman?

Michelle, do you grab a little keepsake from every single job?

• 53:26Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 53:27Speaker 03

Um, not always, not always. Sometimes there's not.

• 53:30Sean Hayes?

Do you have the dress from Baker Boys?

• 53:32Speaker 03

  You know, I don't.

• 53:35Sean Hayes?

Oh, are you gonna get that dress?

• 53:36Speaker 03

I have, I have some of the costumes from Married to Mom. I don't always keep them because.

• 53:42Jason Bateman?

  What about a script?

• 53:43Speaker 03

  They just take up room.

• 53:44Jason Bateman?

  Do you keep the script?

• 53:45Speaker 03

  I keep my scripts.

• 53:46Jason Bateman?

Okay, so you've got a stack of them like on a, on a wall somewhere? Do you have them like bound and stuff like that?

• 53:51Speaker 03

No, they kind of got mildewy and, um, I've been trying to clean them.

• 53:56Will Arnett?

  Do you archive stuff?

• 53:57Speaker 03

  No, I just. No, I don't, I just don't have time.

• 54:02Jason Bateman?

  It's all up here, right?

• 54:04Will Arnett?

Yeah. I like that. I like that you don't. I do want to follow up before we let you go because Jason obviously is.

• 54:11Speaker 03

  Has a time crunch.

• 54:12Will Arnett?

Yeah, he has a time crunch.

• 54:13Jason Bateman?

  He's a hard out man.

• 54:14Will Arnett?

Because he's got to get up.

• 54:15Speaker 03

And Jason, by the way, I was meaning.

• 54:17Jason Bateman?

  It's work, bro.

• 54:18Speaker 03

I was meaning to say, I'm sorry, maybe are you going to a doctor to address your gastrointestinal issues?

• 54:24Jason Bateman?

Yeah, well, you know, the back is so stiff when I get up in the morning. It just sometimes the valve gets a little loose.

• 54:30Speaker 03

  I understand. Yeah.

• 54:31Will Arnett?

  Damn it, man.

• 54:33Jason Bateman?

Michelle understands. Okay? We're all chopped a little.

• 54:38Speaker 03

We're all chopped, baby. We're all chopped.

• 54:41Will Arnett?

  We're all chopped.

• 54:42Speaker 03

  That's a good T-shirt. We're all chopped.

• 54:45Jason Bateman?

Great show. Great show, by the way.

• 54:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:48Jason Bateman?

Wait, Will, you had a killer closer. Go ahead.

• 54:50Will Arnett?

No, not a killer closer, but I just want to ask you because we only, we briefly touched upon Scarface that became this huge, of course, iconic film, Brian De Palma, you and Al Pacino. They didn't care for it.

• 55:04Jason Bateman?

We have a rogue Italian critic in the back of the theater in the process of getting kicked out.

• 55:07Will Arnett?

Finally, a question about Scarface. So, so you couldn't have imagined, I imagine, what the cultural impact that Scarface had and continues to have to this day. I mean, it's just, it's phenomenal, right?

• 55:25Jason Bateman?

We're talking about remaking it, right? Or doing another?

• 55:27Speaker 03

I think the key, I did hear something about that. Was it a television show or was it a new movie? I forget, but I did, that was a couple of years ago. No?

• 55:37Jason Bateman?

Yeah, yeah. It comes up every once in a while. I think Universal and Anton Fuqua, maybe?

• 55:42Speaker 03

I didn't have any idea it would become sort of a cultural phenomenon in the way that it, and in the way that it did too.

• 55:50Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 55:51Speaker 03

It became this sort of cult kind of following and so, and that was, and that was, boy, that was really intense for me. I think, I want to say the shooting went on for six months. It went over like a couple of months and I was playing a coke addict. So I was not eating.

• 56:12Jason Bateman?

  Oh, yeah.

• 56:12Speaker 03

And I kept getting skinnier and skinnier and.

• 56:15Will Arnett?

  Jason, anything?

• 56:16Speaker 03

The crew were bringing me bagels and kind of, and.

• 56:21Jason Bateman?

We're gonna have to reshoot about 20. Twenty pages. Will you please eat something?

• 56:25Speaker 03

Well, and then the scene at the end, you know, where she's in the restaurant and like kind of strung out and at her worst, kept getting pushed and pushed and pushed. And that was the scene where I really wanted to look my worst. Anyway. And it was also very, other than Mary Elizabeth, Master Antonio, Master Antonio, like we were the only women and it was these, you know, it was like, it was like, uh, guys, you know, it was like, uh, and, and gangster guys and, you know, machismo and they were all kind of, you know, a little bit in character all the time and.

• 56:59Jason Bateman?

  Brian De Palma, right?

• 57:00Speaker 03

So, and Brian, yeah. And I was twenty, I was so young. I mean, again, the last credit. I was twenty-three. I think the last credit I had was Grease Two.

• 57:10Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 57:11Speaker 03

And I just didn't have a lot of experience under my belt and I was terrified. Terrified, every, every night I was terrified.

• 57:21Jason Bateman?

So. A lot of that was in, in Florida, right?

• 57:25Speaker 03

So, let's see, uh, a lot of it was in LA.

• 57:29Jason Bateman?

  Oh, yeah.

• 57:30Speaker 03

Most of it was in LA on stage and we did some Florida.

• 57:34Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 57:34Speaker 03

  Location stuff, yeah.

• 57:36Jason Bateman?

But terrified, terrified because of the newness of your career? Yeah?

• 57:41Speaker 03

I didn't feel worthy. I didn't feel like I had the chops. I didn't have any experience behind me. I had no, I had zero confidence.

• 57:51Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 57:51Speaker 03

And, you know, and Al will admit this, he didn't really want me for the part and I auditioned, I think, for a couple of months for it and I knew he didn't want me going into it.

• 58:00Jason Bateman?

  Really?

• 58:01Speaker 03

And, um, one of my favorite stories is when I actually made him bleed during my screen test.

• 58:09Will Arnett?

  How so? Wait, how so?

• 58:12Speaker 03

I think, don't you want to just end there?

• 58:15Will Arnett?

  No.

• 58:15Jason Bateman?

  No.

• 58:16Sean Hayes?

  Good story.

• 58:17Jason Bateman?

  Good cliffhanger.

• 58:18Will Arnett?

  God damn it.

• 58:21Speaker 03

Okay, so I'll try to make it brief. So I'm having to audition. First of all, I come in, I do a great reading for Brian De Palma.

• 58:28Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 58:29Speaker 03

And the casting director. And I was like, it just was a good, it just happened to be good.

• 58:33Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 58:34Speaker 03

Then they want to bring me back to meet Al.

• 58:38Speaker 03

And anyway, over the course of two months, I just get worse and worse and worse because I'm just afraid.

• 58:45Jason Bateman?

  Yeah. Right.

• 58:45Speaker 03

And, and by the end, I'm bad. And I don't blame him. He just was like, I'm bad. And Brian finally comes to me and says, when, you know, you know, doll, it's just, it's just not gonna work out. I'm like, I know, man, I'm sorry. Cause Brian really wanted me.

• 59:01Jason Bateman?

This is what's wrong with the audition process. Is it just the stakes get so high, you can't do good?

• 59:05Speaker 03

Yeah, as disappointed, well, you know that fear is the worst, is an actor's enemy. It's just is completely undermines you. So, so as much disappointed as I was, I was so happy to be done with it. So like, at least a month goes by and I get a call, they want to bring me in to screen test. And I'm like, oh. So, so I show up and I don't even give a shit because I know I'm not getting this part.

• 59:37Jason Bateman?

  Sure, yeah.

• 59:38Speaker 03

  So.

• 59:39Jason Bateman?

  That's when you get them.

• 59:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 59:40Jason Bateman?

  Sexy indifference.

• 59:41Speaker 03

  So I show up.

• 59:44Speaker 03

It was my best work of the film.

• 59:46Jason Bateman?

  Of course.

• 59:47Speaker 03

And it's that restaurant scene where I explode at the end. And I swipe the table of the dishes and every glasses break, the dishes break. Cut. There's blood everywhere.

• 1:00:03Jason Bateman?

  Uh oh.

• 1:00:04Speaker 03

And they all run over to me.

• 1:00:06Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:07Speaker 03

To see where I've cut myself.

• 1:00:09Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, your hand.

• 1:00:09Speaker 03

Well, I didn't cut me, I cut Al.

• 1:00:12Jason Bateman?

  Wow.

• 1:00:14Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 1:00:15Speaker 03

I thought, well, there goes that part.

• 1:00:17Jason Bateman?

And he's just staring at you.

• 1:00:18Speaker 03

Anyway, actually, I think that was the day he was like, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:23Will Arnett?

  Really?

• 1:00:24Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:24Will Arnett?

  Your womb.

• 1:00:25Speaker 03

I think, uh, yeah, she's not bad. So, um.

• 1:00:30Sean Hayes?

Charlie, yeah. And so, um, wait, wow. So was it, was it, did you cut him bad and, and?

• 1:00:38Speaker 03

I cut his, I think I cut him in the finger or something.

• 1:00:40Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 1:00:41Speaker 03

  And, and it.

• 1:00:41Sean Hayes?

And you went for it. You went for it.

• 1:00:43Jason Bateman?

That's why, yeah, I love that. I love that. Wow. There's the lesson.

• 1:00:48Will Arnett?

  Yeah, there's.

• 1:00:48Speaker 03

  There's the lesson.

• 1:00:50Jason Bateman?

You gotta, you gotta give a little less shit.

• 1:00:52Sean Hayes?

Yeah. And if I went for it more, people wouldn't fall asleep in the front row.

• 1:00:55Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 1:00:56Will Arnett?

And once you start breaking some glass, you know, make them say hello to your little friend.

• 1:01:00Jason Bateman?

Make sure the front row's bleeding, Shawnee. Come on.

• 1:01:02Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:03Speaker 03

So before you show up, you know, to do your performance, just, that's your mantra. I don't give a shit.

• 1:01:09Sean Hayes?

  I'll don't give a shit. I'll cut everybody.

• 1:01:10Will Arnett?

  Don't worry. You watch the.

• 1:01:11Speaker 03

Just cut them all. I'll cut everybody.

• 1:01:14Jason Bateman?

  While he's chewing.

• 1:01:15Will Arnett?

Yeah. Michelle, thank you. We have taken up again way too much of your time.

• 1:01:20Speaker 03

And Jason is late for his meeting. Thanks, guys.

• 1:01:23Jason Bateman?

That's all right. It's all right.

• 1:01:25Will Arnett?

What a pleasure. Thank you so much for doing this.

• 1:01:27Jason Bateman?

  Huge pleasure for me, too.

• 1:01:28Will Arnett?

  You're the greatest. It's such a thrill.

• 1:01:30Jason Bateman?

  Such, such an honor, truly.

• 1:01:31Speaker 03

Thank you so much for having me.

• 1:01:33Jason Bateman?

Thank you, Michelle. Thank you. Have a great rest of the day.

• 1:01:36Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:01:36Will Arnett?

Till I see you again. Bye, bye, bye.

• 1:01:38Speaker 03

Am I supposed to stay on? Am I supposed to do something?

• 1:01:41Jason Bateman?

Slam your laptop closed and disgust.

• 1:01:44Speaker 03

  All right.

• 1:01:45Will Arnett?

  Bye, bye.

• 1:01:46Jason Bateman?

  Bye, bye. Thanks.

• 1:01:50Jason Bateman?

  Well, Will, there you go.

• 1:01:52Will Arnett?

Okay, okay. So I pulled it off, huh? I pulled out a pretty.

• 1:01:54Jason Bateman?

  Pretty, pretty nice.

• 1:01:55Will Arnett?

  Yeah, no kidding.

• 1:01:57Jason Bateman?

Did that cost you any money? Like, you gotta, you gotta pay to get guests like that.

• 1:02:01Will Arnett?

I mean, she, I mean, God, how great is she?

• 1:02:04Jason Bateman?

  I love her. Cool.

• 1:02:06Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:06Will Arnett?

  I know, I know. I am cool.

• 1:02:08Jason Bateman?

  She's great, like.

• 1:02:09Will Arnett?

  Did I seem nervous?

• 1:02:11Jason Bateman?

No, that is, wow, what a cool lady.

• 1:02:14Sean Hayes?

Aside from the talent and the looks and everything she has, she's just a cool thing.

• 1:02:19Will Arnett?

Like, so down to earth, so cool, just, it's just amazing. And then, Jason, you did put it really well, which is like, or was it one of you talking about?

• 1:02:29Jason Bateman?

  It was probably me.

• 1:02:30Will Arnett?

About how she's such a great performer. She's such a great actress, that that is the thing that shines through.

• 1:02:39Jason Bateman?

Yeah, you always went for the acting and the beauty was just sort of just a great little sidecar. As opposed to, there are some actors, male and female, that people do go to see like, "Oh, I want my handsome movie star," you know, and I just wanna, yeah, you know, and then, and then you leave and it's like, you know, there was no performance stays with you, but you like the eye candy. She's just like, she's an incredible actor.

• 1:03:05Sean Hayes?

Do you think that was okay that I brought up Grease 2 so much?

• 1:03:08Jason Bateman?

  Oh, we'll cut that out.

• 1:03:09Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:12Jason Bateman?

  Most of your stuff.

• 1:03:13Will Arnett?

By what measure do you mean okay? Like, it was embarrassing?

• 1:03:17Sean Hayes?

  No, I know, like, I couldn't tell.

• 1:03:18Will Arnett?

I mean, embarrassing for you and it was awkward for her.

• 1:03:22Jason Bateman?

She was clowning you the whole time.

• 1:03:23Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:23Sean Hayes?

I love it. Yeah, that movie was so huge to me as a kid.

• 1:03:26Jason Bateman?

No, we don't need more. We don't need more.

• 1:03:31Jason Bateman?

No, I'm actually jealous I never saw that one. I saw the first Grease seven times in a row. Just sitting in my theater chair with my sister.

• 1:03:39Sean Hayes?

  Just a couple weeks ago?

• 1:03:40Jason Bateman?

Out in the valley. This was, what, we were probably 11, 12, something like that.

• 1:03:45Will Arnett?

Were you like sharing a bag? What was going on?

• 1:03:51Jason Bateman?

The only reason we left is because the lighter ran in a butane. So we're like, well, let's get the fuck out of here.

• 1:04:01Jason Bateman?

This is out in the West Valley in the early 80s and it was cheap. Stuff was cheap.

• 1:04:07Sean Hayes?

So, yeah, yeah. There's no way, there's no other reason you would stay and watch it seven times in a row.

• 1:04:12Jason Bateman?

Oh, the theater's cool. You don't want to be sweating while you're tweaking out there in the valley.

• 1:04:18Jason Bateman?

Let John and Olivia just kind of serenade you while you just...

• 1:04:21Will Arnett?

Watch it again. Watch it again. Watch it again.

• 1:04:27Sean Hayes?

That is hilarious. And you watched it that many times before you said?

• 1:04:33Jason Bateman?

Oh, God. Well, I listened. I had a hard hat. Yeah, before I turned to my sister and I said...

• 1:04:39Will Arnett?

It's like somebody grabbed the wheel of a bus. Like somebody, a passenger just reached up and grabbed the wheel.

• 1:04:43Jason Bateman?

  My stop!

• 1:04:46Will Arnett?

  What, said goodbye?

• 1:04:48Jason Bateman?

  Yeah!

• 1:04:49Will Arnett?

  Oh, my God.

• 1:04:50Jason Bateman?

Wait, Sean, if you were to say bye in a Grease-type of song...

• 1:04:55Will Arnett?

  Oh, here we go.

• 1:04:55Jason Bateman?

  How would that?

• 1:05:05Will Arnett?

  Everybody knew their role.

• 1:05:06Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:07Will Arnett?

  Everybody knew their role.

• 1:05:37Sean Hayes?
