Ever invest in something that seemed incredible at first, but didn't live up to the hype? Yeah, I wasted a lot of money buying a car when I was 21 years old. I spent way too much on it. It just, it never worked and I didn't know what I was doing. Marketers know that feeling. They optimize for the numbers that look great, like impressions, but they don't see revenue. LinkedIn has a word for that: bold spend. Instead, you can get the highest ROAS of major ad networks with LinkedIn Ads. Cut the bold spend. Advertise on LinkedIn. Spend $250 and get a $250 credit. • 2:50Sean Hayes?

Hey, good morning, everybody. How's everybody doing?

• 2:53Jason Bateman?

Real good. What a nice sleep.

• 2:54Will Arnett?

  What a, yeah.

• 2:55Jason Bateman?

Will, you were snoring a little bit last night. I had to turn you over a couple of times.

• 2:58Will Arnett?

  I know.

• 2:59Sean Hayes?

Yes, and I had no covers on me. That was weird.

• 3:01Jason Bateman?

No, you didn't. But I love that extra supersized Charlie and the Chocolate Factory bed we got, huh?

• 3:07Will Arnett?

Hey, be honest, what was the camera for? Because I noticed a camera this morning when I woke up.

• 3:11Sean Hayes?

That was my bad. That was my bad. I forgot to take it down.

• 3:14Will Arnett?

  Okay.

• 3:14Jason Bateman?

Anyway, let's do a podcast, huh? Welcome to Smartless.

• 3:35Sean Hayes?

  How's everybody doing?

• 3:36Jason Bateman?

I'm great. I haven't even had a chance to open up my breakfast bar.

• 3:41Sean Hayes?

  A little ASMR. Yeah.

• 3:44Jason Bateman?

This is Papa, this is Papa Steve's No Junk Raw Protein Bars, which I'm real keen on. And my address, you can find in the chat.

• 3:51Sean Hayes?

  Jesus.

• 3:52Jason Bateman?

Okay. Have you guys had your breakfast yet?

• 3:56Will Arnett?

  I have.

• 3:57Sean Hayes?

  I have not.

• 3:58Jason Bateman?

  What'd you have, Willie?

• 3:59Will Arnett?

I had one cup of oatmeal made with water and some berries.

• 4:05Jason Bateman?

Do they let you out for an hour of exercise each day?

• 4:08Will Arnett?

Yeah, I had a few berries with it and then a drizzle of maple syrup, pure maple syrup for taste.

• 4:14Jason Bateman?

I don't take drizzle ever again.

• 4:15Will Arnett?

Yeah, and then I had five scrambled eggs.

• 4:18Jason Bateman?

Jesus, my chest hurts. Five eggs?

• 4:21Will Arnett?

Well, your chest shouldn't hurt. It's not bad for your chest.

• 4:24Jason Bateman?

You know, I think there was one report that said that eggs are not cholesterol problems anymore. And I love that report as much as you do, but I'd love to hear a second.

• 4:32Will Arnett?

Well, my doctor told me that, so.

• 4:36Jason Bateman?

This is the guy you found online?

• 4:38Will Arnett?

Put it this way, what's your cholesterol and what's mine? And you're the one who eats all this shit and what's yours and what's mine?

• 4:43Jason Bateman?

My cholesterol's horrendous, yeah. It's in my family.

• 4:47Will Arnett?

  Mine's 90.

• 4:48Jason Bateman?

I will tell you, I just had one of those full body scans. And.

• 4:52Will Arnett?

  No brain?

• 4:53Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 4:55Will Arnett?

  And completely empty?

• 4:56Sean Hayes?

Sir, can we talk to you for a second?

• 5:00Jason Bateman?

It's just one microchip up there.

• 5:04Will Arnett?

They said it's not, there's no heart. They just found a box with a picture of a heart in it.

• 5:11Will Arnett?

So did you get the results back?

• 5:12Jason Bateman?

Yes, thank you. The results were fine.

• 5:14Sean Hayes?

  Oh, good.

• 5:15Jason Bateman?

Everything is fantastic and yeah, I'm very pleased. Because you know, you never know with those things. You could get the, okay, so your appointment to review your scan results? Or is it tomorrow at 3 o'clock? Okay, so tomorrow at 3 o'clock, I'm going to find out if I've got something I've got to worry about the rest of my life.

• 5:32Will Arnett?

They got six guys in there like.

• 5:33Jason Bateman?

They'd actually like to do this in person.

• 5:35Will Arnett?

The team needs to speak to you. Hey, Jason, can you clear your schedule for the next four months?

• 5:43Jason Bateman?

And do you have a wife, girlfriend, best friend, something that can maybe drive you?

• 5:46Will Arnett?

Are you religious at all? Because we got a guy here on standby.

• 5:50Jason Bateman?

No, it's a real, we were talking about it, you and me, Will, the other day and you were like, well, I don't know. I mean, do you want to know? Do you want, it's like, I do if it's good news and thank God it was, it was good, so.

• 6:02Sean Hayes?

  That's good.

• 6:03Will Arnett?

Did you get the, Sean, did you get the shingles vaccine?

• 6:06Sean Hayes?

  I did.

• 6:07Jason Bateman?

  Yeah. Yeah. Did you, Willie?

• 6:09Will Arnett?

  I have not.

• 6:10Sean Hayes?

  You have to, you must.

• 6:12Jason Bateman?

Have you had, now what is it, if you've had chicken pox, you're susceptible to shingles? Or vice versa?

• 6:18Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it's already living inside you if you had chicken pox, the shingles.

• 6:20Jason Bateman?

So if you haven't had chicken pox, you're good, you don't need the shingles vaccine?

• 6:24Sean Hayes?

I think, I don't know, don't get medical advice from this show.

• 6:27Jason Bateman?

Yeah, exactly, change the channel, everybody.

• 6:28Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 6:30Will Arnett?

Sean, how often, how often would you say, in any given week, do you have a conversation at least with the doctor?

• 6:37Sean Hayes?

Oh god, on a weekly basis, for sure.

• 6:39Jason Bateman?

So it's at least once a week?

• 6:40Will Arnett?

At least once a week, you're interfacing with the doctor, via text or call or in person.

• 6:46Jason Bateman?

Why? Cause you're concerned, or you just wanna stay ahead of things?

• 6:49Sean Hayes?

I wanna be one of those people that catch something before it happens.

• 6:52Jason Bateman?

Right, so you just workshop things that could go wrong with you and what to do to be ready?

• 6:57Sean Hayes?

  That's right.

• 6:58Will Arnett?

You ever thought about just living life and enjoying it?

• 7:01Sean Hayes?

I'll take photos of shit and text them and all that stuff.

• 7:03Jason Bateman?

You could zip into a bubble, maybe, you know, and just kind of have Scotty roll you around.

• 7:09Sean Hayes?

  From room to room?

• 7:10Jason Bateman?

  Uh huh.

• 7:12Sean Hayes?

Yeah, I'm not above it, I'll do that. You know what, though, we were talking about anesthesia, Jason, me and you, I think, at dinner last week.

• 7:20Will Arnett?

God, I could go for some propofol right now.

• 7:21Sean Hayes?

Wouldn't it be great? And we were talking about, how do you, isn't it fascinating, how did somebody discover?

• 7:26Jason Bateman?

Yeah, they can just switch you off.

• 7:27Sean Hayes?

Anesthesia, like, who do you test that on?

• 7:30Will Arnett?

Right, we're gonna bring you as close to death as possible.

• 7:34Jason Bateman?

Getting that just right was probably challenging. That's too much, we've lost them. Or too little, you can see them screaming as they amputate the wrist.

• 7:45Sean Hayes?

  It's unbelievable.

• 7:46Will Arnett?

Well, I tell you, when you don't want some propofol is when our guest is performing.

• 7:50Sean Hayes?

  Great transition.

• 7:51Will Arnett?

You wanna be wide, you wanna be wide awake for this person's work. And I tell you, millions of people have been wide awake, watching this guy, he's been, I'm gonna say this, he's been dazzling people for a long time.

• 8:08Jason Bateman?

  David Copperfield.

• 8:10Will Arnett?

  Well, his.

• 8:12Jason Bateman?

  David Blaine.

• 8:14Will Arnett?

I will just say, Jason, you might wanna be careful, because this person knows a lot of your secrets. Okay, this person knows.

• 8:23Jason Bateman?

  Papa?

• 8:24Will Arnett?

This person knows a lot of the stuff that you've. Been up to, especially recently, because this person is, is somebody who has been in and out of your world, I'll just say this, this is, I, again, I always feel like with my guests, it's hard to start, you know, naming their credits because you're just gonna, you immediately, you're gonna go, ah, blah, blah, blah.

• 8:48Jason Bateman?

Why is this person my guest then? You say, I know this person.

• 8:50Will Arnett?

You do. And they could be your guest, because I wanted to kind of surprise you.

• 8:54Jason Bateman?

  Uh-oh.

• 8:55Will Arnett?

Because this is somebody who has, this is somebody who's been doing, this is somebody who's been doing, the kinds of films that we, Jay, this is the kind of thing for you that fits in, like, they're doing the kind of thing that the tastemakers like, and like, all those kind of words that you like.

• 9:12Jason Bateman?

How much disdain he has for that.

• 9:14Will Arnett?

I know. And, and, you know, because there are films in there, this is somebody who's been nominated for Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards, BAFTAs, Olivier Awards.

• 9:25Jason Bateman?

I don't know anybody this fancy.

• 9:27Will Arnett?

He's done television, he's played the Pope, he's played, he's been in Sherlock Holmes, he's been, he's been in, Talented Mr. Hey Jude.

• 9:41Will Arnett?

And he's, I was wanting to get to him, he's Jason's co-star and collaborator on Black Rabbit, is Jude Live?

• 9:47Jason Bateman?

  Yeah. Good morning, my friend.

• 9:50Speaker 03

  Good morning.

• 9:51Will Arnett?

And he should be your guest, but I wanted him because I wanted to surprise you, JB, with your, with your guy.

• 9:58Jason Bateman?

Buddy, god damn it, this is great. Guys, get ready, get ready to just fall in love and clear out, make room for a new best friend. There's really, Jude, first of all, welcome. There's just nobody I'm more excited about as a, as a new person in my life, like, for the last 10 years, Jude Live.

• 10:19Speaker 03

  The feeling.

• 10:20Will Arnett?

Jude, he has been, he has been singing your praises since you guys started working together, and I'm not, honestly, I'm not making it up. He cannot speak more highly about, and he has generally disdain for people, as you know.

• 10:36Speaker 03

  I broke through that.

• 10:38Will Arnett?

  You somehow.

• 10:39Jason Bateman?

I like five people in the world, and there's three on the screen right now.

• 10:43Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 10:43Speaker 03

I'm, I'm going, we, we finished just a couple of weeks ago, and I'm genuinely going through withdrawals. It's been, I mean, it was a long shoot, so you know when it starts to become part of your daily routine, and... Dare I say, you not take it for granted, but you're just, you know, you've been doing it for a few months and it's just, it's what you do every day. And man, I'm finding it hard. It's been a bit bumpy coming out. How about you?

• 11:06Jason Bateman?

Yeah, it's like, it's like, yeah, on that, on that project, it was like waking up in your house each day and just like hanging out with your family and it's just so easy. And then you're gone from your family. You start to miss them.

• 11:19Speaker 03

Yeah, it's, it's a very odd part of what we do, right? Cause I was, I was trying to explain this to someone. It's like, most people have their first day on a job, like, you know, in their twenties or thirties. And maybe they change their job once, like in their forties or we, we change a job three times a year sometimes, like a whole new group of people. Hi, hello, I'm Jude. Nice to meet you.

• 11:45Will Arnett?

Well, what's so unusual is, is, is that Jason has allowed himself to get attached to you because I have heard him describe, and this is true, and I really, this is true. I, he described recently to somebody, and this really, again, is going to give you a lot of info about who JB, he, he talks about how when he starts a job with people, he tells himself not to get too attached because he knows he's not going to see them again. And so he, he builds in a distance with people so that he won't, so he won't get hurt. Am I right JB?

• 12:15Jason Bateman?

Ish. It's not as much of a defense mechanism as just like a practicality. It's like, well, we're going to never see each other again, but there's a necessary bonding that needs to happen to, to really make the work enjoyable and effective. And so, yeah, it is, it's an odd thing.

• 12:31Speaker 03

I've given, I've actually given young actors that advice sometimes because I remember when I was in my early twenties starting out.

• 12:38Jason Bateman?

You say, don't fall in love with me.

• 12:39Speaker 03

You kind of thought, no, no, you know, you kind of, you kind of walk away from the film thinking, I've just made 50 best friends and I'm gonna, we're gonna see each other every week there and then nothing happens and you feel slightly like heartbroken. So you gotta, you know, I'm like, don't, you're not, they're not going to be your best friends. You're going to work together. It's gonna be a great experience.

• 12:58Jason Bateman?

The good news in this business is you actually do have a realistic chance of, of seeing those people again though, on, on another project.

• 13:04Speaker 03

If you're as old as we are.

• 13:05Jason Bateman?

  On a podcast.

• 13:06Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 13:07Jason Bateman?

Now, before we get going, I just, I have seen Jude's film that is coming out, depending on when this airs, it's called The Order. And I've seen it twice in the last three days because they very nicely asked me to introduce it at some screening the other day. This movie, Jude's the lead in it, it's also with Nicholas Holt and Jurney Smollett, and it's directed by Justin Krasinski. Guys, if you like a bag of money and a gun, and something that is shot like one of those Sidney Lumet films, it's just, this movie is so goddamn good.

• 13:48Jason Bateman?

He plays an FBI agent that is after a white supremacist gang up in the Pacific Northwest. It's a true story, happens back in like the late 70s, early 80s, I think Jude, and it's just badass. Bank robberies, and it's just, go see it. It's called The Order, it's fucking great.

• 14:06Will Arnett?

Yeah, I haven't, I haven't seen it, I haven't seen the trailer, I saw the one sheet, it looks really, just the poster alone looked really cool, and, you know, and I think that you're like holding a gun in it, or something like that.

• 14:17Jason Bateman?

I'd see it a hundred more times.

• 14:19Will Arnett?

Talk a little bit, well, just if you can, just because we're on this, Jude, talk a little bit about The Order, and how it kind of came into your world, and what it was about it that you're like, oh yeah, this is something I gotta do, because I don't necessarily associate you with as a sort of like a gun wrangling, like, you know what I mean?

• 14:34Speaker 03

I hadn't, I felt, I hadn't played a part like it, and it came my way through my production company, and, you know, it was just one of those, it was so full of potential, it had this incredible true story that I hadn't heard of, an awful lot of people hadn't heard of, it had all this relevance to today, and the sort of divisive society that we're living in, and that we're seeing around the world, and then, you know, it's also wrapped up in a brilliant cat and mouse thriller, kind of genre film, and like Jason said, it's reminded me of those movies, those kind of crowd pleasers that I used to go see when I was a kid, with the, with the great filmmakers of Lumet and Freakin', and it's funny, isn't it, how our...

• 15:18Speaker 03

It's the same with other genres, I suppose, but those kind of movies were at once with Hackman and Newman and people like that in them, so, so popular and suddenly they, I don't know, they kind of lost their edge maybe, but anyway.

• 15:31Jason Bateman?

I have no idea why, right? I mean, like, French Connection, like, they don't make those movies anymore. And those used to be like the blockbusters, Wide or Dog Day Afternoon. What, what happened?

• 15:41Will Arnett?

I think we do, well, I think, first of all, I think we do know, and they tried even into the 90s, I was thinking about Ronin, you know, that great De Niro, Frankenstein movie, amazing. Again, trying to extend that idea, even Out of Sight with Clooney and those guys in.

• 15:55Jason Bateman?

Yeah, or Out of the Furnace, the Christian Bale movie.

• 15:58Will Arnett?

Yeah, like, all those movies tried, but I think that what happened was, and I think I mentioned this before, we've spent the last, at least, decade kind of under the tyranny of IP.

• 16:08Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 16:10Will Arnett?

These films that were made, that were made, all the studios owned all this IP, and they're like, how can we squeeze as much as we can out of this IP, whether it's this for people like Sean. And Scotty ruined the movie business, because that's what they wanted.

• 16:26Jason Bateman?

Yeah, I think they're trying to hedge their bet and they're like, say.

• 16:29Will Arnett?

I hope they save the planet Lindelore, because that's where they, you know.

• 16:33Jason Bateman?

Careful, Jude's got a Star Wars thing coming up, so.

• 16:36Sean Hayes?

  Yes, it's called, yeah, I can't wait. It's called Skeleton Crew, I can't wait.

• 16:39Will Arnett?

Excluding Jude, I didn't talk about Star Wars, not Jude, Star Wars. Anyway, I think that that is why, and I think, but I think you're right, there's an appetite for this kind of thing now.

• 16:49Jason Bateman?

They're assuming they're gonna get a built-in audience with this existing IP, and so these original things are sort of put on the back burner, but, my god, just a pure satisfying experience of going to see, you know, a caper, you know, or a thriller, or something with just a true beginning, middle, and end, where you get invested with these characters, and there's a sticky plot, and like, why do I need some dude flying around, on top of it all? Sean.

• 17:14Speaker 03

But it goes full circle, I'm sure, right?

• 17:16Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 17:16Speaker 03

I mean, people come, they, they'll always come back to it. It's like vinyl, right? Everyone comes back to vinyl.

• 17:20Jason Bateman?

  You hope, you hope.

• 17:21Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 17:22Jason Bateman?

This, hopefully, this one will, this one will start. You know what? Guess what? It's the same thing with music. My kids listen to all this, this music that's very good, but it's all comes out of, of, of electronic, um, um, interface as opposed to like plugging in an instrument and like you hear a snare drum or you hear a, a, a guitar. I mean, I don't mean to sound like an old fuddy duddy, but I, I miss the sound of instruments in music. Hopefully that comes back as well.

• 17:46Sean Hayes?

It'll come back. It'll come back.

• 17:47Will Arnett?

I think, I think it does come back. I, I mean, I mean, you're, you're talking a lot about, I suppose, mainstream pop music. There is a lot, there is a huge appetite for, and there's a very thriving indie music, certainly. Uh, I'm like such an old school 90s dinosaur indie fan, but that has kind of come back. There's a lot of guitar-driven music out there that's excellent.

• 18:09Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 18:09Will Arnett?

Um, a lot of great American bands and, you know.

• 18:12Sean Hayes?

  Jude, how are you today?

• 18:16Jason Bateman?

  Hey, F you, Sean.

• 18:18Will Arnett?

Sean, go fuck yourself. Hey, do you guys want to hear my impression of Sean and Scotty going to the movies again?

• 18:22Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, please.

• 18:23Will Arnett?

Blah, blah, blah. I hope that they find, I hope he knows that his- No, they go, they got two of those? His dad actually came from Skoda Square. Do you know that his dad, his dad was in the other, and his kid came from Skoda Square too.

• 18:34Sean Hayes?

Yeah. By the way, we just watched Alien Romulus again.

• 18:39Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 18:40Sean Hayes?

  That, that-

• 18:40Will Arnett?

  Again.

• 18:41Sean Hayes?

  That mythology is so great.

• 18:43Speaker 03

Where does that sit in the, in the order of, of the Alien, yeah?

• 18:46Sean Hayes?

It be, it comes before the original in the 70s.

• 18:50Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 18:51Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 18:51Speaker 03

  Ooh.

• 18:52Sean Hayes?

Or right after. I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm sorry, right after.

• 18:54Speaker 03

Have you watched the original again recently?

• 18:55Sean Hayes?

  Yes, it's incredible.

• 18:57Speaker 03

And like the design, the design for it, although who was it who was watching it recently? And they said, they paused it and zoomed in on a little, uh, uh, area in behind, I think, Ian Holm.

• 19:10Sean Hayes?

  Yes.

• 19:10Speaker 03

And it was, it was basically an old speaker turned inside out, right, upstate, down, and sprayed white or something.

• 19:16Sean Hayes?

Yes, yes, yes. It's really cool. And in Romulus, they, the sets they made look like the 80s, because I, I, I misspoke. It comes after the original. Sorry, in between the original.

• 19:26Speaker 03

But anyway. In that, in that early, in that early Alien-

• 19:28Sean Hayes?

  Are you a fan?

• 19:29Speaker 03

  I love Alien, yeah.

• 19:30Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah, so good.

• 19:32Speaker 03

  I love big science fiction.

• 19:32Jason Bateman?

Where are you right now? Are you hotel? Are you home?

• 19:34Speaker 03

I'm in, I'm in a hotel in Beverly Hills.

• 19:37Jason Bateman?

  Oh, fantastic.

• 19:38Speaker 03

I'm in Los Angeles for a while, promoting and, you know.

• 19:43Jason Bateman?

Yeah, he is humping. This guy's got stamina like you cannot believe. He's not gonna stop until December.

• 19:49Will Arnett?

I've heard, again, I don't wanna get too much, because we do love the Black Rabbit. We wanna talk about, we're so, we're all so excited for Black Rabbit.

• 19:55Jason Bateman?

There's time to talk about that. That's a year from now.

• 19:57Will Arnett?

I will say, again, this is the highest compliment from JB. He would, he talked about your stamina and your ability to show up on set every day and deliver in every way. I, I've never seen him so impressed. And as a, I've never seen him so impressed, Jude. Honestly, again, I'm, I'm going out of my way here, but it's so true.

• 20:17Jason Bateman?

I need your notes, I need your notes on episode three and four. If you can turn those around to me, Jude.

• 20:22Will Arnett?

Let's not turn this into a work session, okay?

• 20:24Speaker 03

Let's do, let's just, let's just house it out now.

• 20:27Will Arnett?

Let's, okay, well Jude, let's talk early, let's talk early days as you started as a performer. So you, we know where you've been and where you are now, but let's flashback to when you were a kid. And the first time you said, "Mom, Dad, I wanna perform," or somebody said, "Jude, you need to perform." What was the, the thing? Was it your, were you attracted to it? Did somebody notice it in you? What was the thing? How did it, how did it also?

• 20:51Speaker 03

It just sort of occurred because my parents were, uh, teachers. Uh, this is in the seventies in, in southeast London. And they, but they had a passion for theater. So they were members of a local theater company and they would put on plays. And I, I grew up in a house where I remember there were always, you know, the kitchen was full of people rehearsing and, uh, or I'd come down and, and, and half our furniture would be gone because they'd be using it for, for, on a set in the play that they were putting on. And so it was, it was just a big, and I just remember loving watching adults rehearse and goof about. It looked like it was a, it was a dialogue. It was a, it was a language that made sense to me.

• 21:34Speaker 03

And, and I was, I felt very comfortable in it. So really, honestly, it was like a kind of, what's the right word? Segue as opposed to a kind of decision. Uh, I got involved the older I got and did plays and I joined a company as, as a kid.

• 21:48Jason Bateman?

  Brothers and sisters?

• 21:50Speaker 03

I had a big sister who, who, she, she performed too, but she's a painter.

• 21:55Jason Bateman?

I thought that was the name of the theater company. I thought Jason was like Brothers and Sisters Theater Company.

• 21:59Will Arnett?

  Be a good one.

• 22:00Speaker 03

Yeah, it is a good name.

• 22:02Will Arnett?

  But she's a painter, yeah?

• 22:03Speaker 03

  She's a painter, yeah, yeah.

• 22:04Sean Hayes?

  Oh, wow.

• 22:05Speaker 03

So the decision honestly was just, I didn't, I mean, when there was a, there was a moment when I got offered a job in a TV show, I was about seventeen, and made, had to make the decision of leaving school, moving out. And they just sort of knew that was gonna happen, and they made me promise if it didn't work out, I'd go back to school, and I was like, of course, and, um, but they were incredibly supportive.

• 22:28Will Arnett?

So wait, did you not finish high school like me?

• 22:30Speaker 03

  No, didn't finish.

• 22:31Will Arnett?

  Nice.

• 22:32Sean Hayes?

  Wow.

• 22:32Speaker 03

  No, I didn't.

• 22:33Will Arnett?

This is great. What I'm realizing, what I'm realizing also about your friendship with JB is that he hasn't asked you any questions about your life, um, in all the time that you've known.

• 22:42Sean Hayes?

Tell me your last, dude, what's your last name?

• 22:44Will Arnett?

We're gonna, he's like, do you have a sister? Did you finish high school? How the fuck would you not know that already?

• 22:47Sean Hayes?

Well, I'm not in there on the guy's jock all day on the fucking set, you know, we got work to do.

• 22:51Will Arnett?

It's called just human irrational, it's just called being interested in somebody else other than yourself.

• 22:55Sean Hayes?

Nah, I gotta scroll through my phone in between takes.

• 22:57Speaker 03

Jason and I stayed in character the whole time. Oh my god. He only talked.

• 23:01Will Arnett?

  Oh my god.

• 23:02Speaker 03

I must, I will be honest, it was kinda weird when he shaved the beard, because he'd been my big brother with the beard, and like, you know, we'd been hugging and fighting, and it's been, it's been full on, and then suddenly he appeared, and he was Jason Bateman.

• 23:14Sean Hayes?

Yeah, TV Jason Bateman, yeah, yeah.

• 23:16Will Arnett?

I know, god, you guys did so much storytelling together, so.

• 23:20Sean Hayes?

  Oh, god, Will.

• 23:23Sean Hayes?

And we will be right back.

• 23:27Sean Hayes?

• 27:37Sean Hayes?

And now, back to the show.

• 27:40Will Arnett?

So Jude, but that decision to go and do, to go do a television program or stay in school. When I hear you say it, and I think about wanting to be a performer being 17, like, that's a kind of an easy decision. Like, hey, do you want to go do it? Yeah. Or do you want to stay in school? I really love school.

• 28:01Sean Hayes?

Yeah, when did you know that you were safe? That it was actually going to be something that could provide an income for you?

• 28:08Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 28:10Speaker 03

Honestly, not until I was in my early twenties and I and I'd done a movie or two and and really, yeah.

• 28:16Jason Bateman?

What was your first one? What was your first film?

• 28:18Speaker 03

So my first film was a movie called Shopping, and it was about car thieves, and that was in the early nineties. And then I did a film, another English film, but a period film called Wild about Oscar Wilde. And Stephen Fry played Oscar Wilde, and I played his his boyfriend, Bosie Douglas, who was a nasty piece of work. And around then, I'd done a lot of theatre and the film, yeah, I guess around then, I sort of thought, oh, this is a job.

• 28:44Jason Bateman?

When was the move, uh, were you you were still in England at that point?

• 28:47Will Arnett?

Well, Wild, you got you, that was the first, like, you got a little, you got some recognition for that performance in Wild. That kind of like put you up a a notch.

• 28:57Speaker 03

Yeah, I got those, you know, uh, newcomer awards.

• 29:01Will Arnett?

  Right.

• 29:01Speaker 03

And, uh, you know, welcome to the gang awards, kind of thing.

• 29:05Will Arnett?

Yeah. That's well, that's kind of good, though. I mean, that's kind of when you're a young actor, I mean, then it's meaningful, yeah?

• 29:12Speaker 03

Totally. But you know how it is, there's still that funny feeling of, God, I just want to get another job. Just right, you know, like, you still think the the unpredictable nature of what we of what we do, the waiting is is still quite alarming. And you haven't got enough money in the bank, like, you're kind of thinking, okay, God, this is unpredictable.

• 29:30Jason Bateman?

Even today, all four of us are not out of the woods. We never will be. The only thing that I think we have going for us is that if our careers were to end soon, there would be sort of a downhill trajectory of maybe three or four jobs before you're done. Like, that's that's the only sort of pad we have built in there, whereas like back when Jude was starting, maybe, you know, this could be your last job. I think the the four of us are at a point now, you know, with all of our, you know, um, we're so lucky to have had our our sort of success, but it still only is built in like a a three job off ramp.

• 30:07Will Arnett?

Not if I release Sean's texts, I think it's gonna be. It's gonna be immediate.

• 30:12Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 30:13Will Arnett?

  But.

• 30:14Jason Bateman?

  I could use any.

• 30:15Will Arnett?

Jude, I will, so Jude, then, I, cause I'm kinda building towards this, which is the, the film, I think, that I first, that, that I, as a consumer and, and, and a film goer, um, and as a young actor, you know, looking, aspiring to, to do stuff, noticed you in a film that I, to this day, adore, and talk about science fiction, a really pure, I think, one of the great science fiction films, Gattaca. You and Ethan. That performance, that film.

• 30:43Jason Bateman?

  Andrew Niccol.

• 30:44Will Arnett?

Andrew Niccol. What, what an incredible, Andrew Niccol, amazing filmmaker, but that film was really remarkable. Talk a little bit about that, would you?

• 30:53Speaker 03

Well, it was the first film that brought me to Hollywood, and it was the first time, and, you know, it was one of those rare occasions where you read a script and you're, you just can't believe it's as good as it is, um, and that they want you to be in it, that was a, that was pretty extraordinary. Um, you know, I was thinking a lot about that recently, and, uh, Ethan was such an incredible, uh, teacher, really. To, to meet and work with Ethan at that early formative moment was, was really impactful. He was, he's such a gent, and he takes it so seriously, but with such a humor and, and a creative sort of approach, and I remember watching him, and, and we had all our stuff together, that was, that was really influential.

• 31:38Speaker 03

Um, but moving here, moving to the States and making a film, and, uh, I remember going and rehearsing on, on the Sony lot, and, yeah, it was just a, it was a dream, it was, it was kinda fantastic, fantastical.

• 31:51Jason Bateman?

Where did you move to? Where was, where was your first spot?

• 31:54Speaker 03

Uh, what was it called? I, I stayed.

• 31:56Jason Bateman?

Were you down there in Culver City, near the, near the lot?

• 31:58Speaker 03

No, I was in West Hollywood, I was in one of those funny little, uh, hotels where you've got a kitchen in the corner, something sweet, Summerfield Suite, something like that. Um, well, you know, you have a bed and a little, everything's in one room.

• 32:11Jason Bateman?

Wasn't as glamorous as you thought the Hollywood sort of journey would be.

• 32:14Speaker 03

Honestly, I was just happy someone else was picking up the bill and.

• 32:18Will Arnett?

At that point, you were just happy it wasn't raining. I think, I think, I think, you know, you talk about Ethan, first of all, I do want to say this, and we've had him on the show, we're such fans, I think.

• 32:29Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 32:30Will Arnett?

Uh, he is such an unheralded artist, and I don't usually use that word as much. Because, but sometimes it makes me grin, but I, he is such an artist, that, that guy, and, and he is. And started, you know, young, as we know, he was, he was a child actor.

• 32:46Jason Bateman?

  Talking about Ethan Hawke.

• 32:47Will Arnett?

Ethan Hawke, yeah, sorry, Tracy, we're talking about Ethan Hawke, he's one of those guys, he could have, if, if he'd had more artistry, Jason could have been him. But he, he's one of those, and I say that, Jason, and I love what you do.

• 32:59Jason Bateman?

  Feels like a compliment.

• 33:00Will Arnett?

  No, it is.

• 33:01Jason Bateman?

Kind of look into it a little bit.

• 33:02Will Arnett?

  Um, no, but.

• 33:03Speaker 03

  Unpack that.

• 33:04Will Arnett?

Yeah, he is, no, he is, he's kind of like, I, I really do, I, I love. A, all his performances are so good and so raw and amazing, and I love his approach and hearing him talk about.

• 33:16Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 33:17Will Arnett?

Art, and so when you told me that you learn a lot, I believe that, I believe that that relationship was.

• 33:24Speaker 03

  Generous too.

• 33:25Will Arnett?

  Generous, yeah.

• 33:25Speaker 03

That's another thing, really generous on set, you know, and, and, and, and aware that he's got, he was working with someone who was pretty green, I mean, I'd only done a couple of films and I'm still a little bit like this, but, but, you know. Uh, just warm and, yeah, he was, it was a very happy time, um, but here's the funny thing, you know. Again, too young to realize that that doesn't mean the film's gonna be a hit, right? So you're sitting there going, wow, I'm in Hollywood, and this is, it's really good, and it is, it's a great film, and the, the, the proof with that one is, is that people still refer to it, thank you for what you said, I mean, you're, and you're right, it holds up.

• 34:01Will Arnett?

  Oh, my God.

• 34:02Speaker 03

But at the time, it just sort of disappeared, and I kind of, you know, that was my first taste of, oh. Oh, you gotta keep trying, you gotta keep throwing the spaghetti at the wall, cause nothing till it sticks, right?

• 34:14Will Arnett?

But, but, but, and I think, yeah, you know, it's funny, you do have that, again. And as a as a consumer of it and and somebody who watched it and and adored it to me. To me, it was a hit in the sense that it worked and it was brilliant and all that kind of so I walked out of the theater. With whomever and say like, God, that was an incredible film and blah blah. So I've sort of put it in that place that it's an incredible film. I don't know if.

• 34:37Speaker 03

Funny that, right? Funny how that happens.

• 34:39Will Arnett?

Yeah, the accounts at the studio.

• 34:41Speaker 03

No, exactly. But it's funny how, you know, if if it stays in your. I mean, it's not one of those we look back on and go, well, it was, yeah, it it worked at the time, but you know. Again, this is why it's such a shame in a way that films are judged on their, you know, opening weekend, the box office. You think, let's come back and re-review this in 10 years, five years, 10, 20 years.

• 35:00Jason Bateman?

Well, that's one of the things I like about streaming, right? Like, there is no sort of um scorecard. There there's no sort of. Results. It's just it's up there. And if you like it, you tell somebody about it and then they they watch it, they might like it and it's just. People then experience it when they want, how they want, and I I just I like that it's just on it on the merits. There's no, it's not qualified by.

• 35:25Speaker 03

And old catalogs get rediscovered again, right?

• 35:27Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 35:28Speaker 03

Someone was telling that Grey's Anatomy is this.

• 35:30Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 35:31Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. It's suddenly being watched by everybody.

• 35:34Will Arnett?

Oh, all these shows, there there's what's the show? The Suits?

• 35:37Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 35:38Will Arnett?

Suits has had this thing where everybody's, people are like, oh, have you watched Suits?

• 35:41Sean Hayes?

But I wonder what the algorithm or their their thing it says to, let's try suits, let's try Grey's Anatomy, you know, like, I wonder. I don't know, it's interesting. Um, you know, Jude.

• 35:52Will Arnett?

  Yeah, sorry, Sean.

• 35:53Sean Hayes?

No, I was just. You go, you go, you go, you go, you go, you go.

• 35:56Jason Bateman?

  I'm going.

• 35:56Will Arnett?

I was just gonna say this, which is, so you do Gadda Can, you come out and it brings you out here and and it kind of introduces and brings you to Hollywood. And then what was the gap? You you did that and then you did, I want to say that you did. Well, what the time between that and uh Talented Mr. Ripley?

• 36:15Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 36:16Will Arnett?

Cause those are both late 90s films that were really. Amazing impactful films.

• 36:22Speaker 03

Yeah, Ripley raised, Ripley really raised my game because of nominations and the other people in it. There was a little bit of a, there were a few, you know, tumbleweed moments between, uh, Gallagher and Ripley, where because Gallagher hadn't been a financial hit, I was, I did, I, I, you know, I did a couple of smaller parts and, but still, there's that thing of, you know, this isn't, it's not consistent and Ripley really, uh, was a leap for me.

• 36:51Jason Bateman?

And then you were on the set with another gem, Matt Damon. I'll bet you, uh, you had a great time with him too.

• 36:56Will Arnett?

Yeah, I mean, he can be, he's a little, I mean.

• 36:59Jason Bateman?

  He's not bright, but.

• 37:00Will Arnett?

No, he's not bright. Matt's really not that bright. He's really hot and cold. Let's be honest. And he blew it. He blew it at Wordle this morning. Uh, I will say.

• 37:09Jason Bateman?

I busted two days ago. I bet you did too.

• 37:11Will Arnett?

I did not. Everybody else busted on that day and I did not. I got a six.

• 37:15Jason Bateman?

What was it again? Was it radar or something like that?

• 37:17Will Arnett?

No, no, no, no. I'll tell you right now. Uh, cause Bob texted me about it and he was like, what did you, what did you get today?

• 37:23Speaker 03

Have you, have you tried Quodle?

• 37:25Jason Bateman?

Oh my, don't, don't get him started, dude.

• 37:27Will Arnett?

I do Quodle, Ock Turtle and Wordle, all three, every morning with Matt and this, uh, two other guys, every morning for three years.

• 37:34Speaker 03

  That's consistent.

• 37:35Will Arnett?

  Every morning.

• 37:36Jason Bateman?

Okay, get back to your guest.

• 37:38Will Arnett?

So, get back to your guest. Wait, so you do a couple of tumbleweeds and then you do Ripley. Did you know Anthony, uh, Anthony Mingala before?

• 37:47Speaker 03

No, he, uh, I was working, uh, I did this, I did this really odd little film with a, with a director from Hong Kong and Anthony's wife was one of the producers on it. And he was watching the, the rushes for that while he was casting. I mean, what, I, I, I look back on that decision.

• 38:06Will Arnett?

That's the way that that works.

• 38:08Speaker 03

  I don't know how, I mean, I don't know what he saw.

• 38:11Will Arnett?

  I can tell you.

• 38:12Speaker 03

  It's amazing. It's amazing.

• 38:13Will Arnett?

Saw some raw talent and somebody pretty easy on the eyes.

• 38:15Speaker 03

  Hell of a leap, though.

• 38:16Will Arnett?

Was, um, was his daughter Hannah around? The great Hannah Mangela?

• 38:19Speaker 03

The great Hannah. And Max, Max, who's now a director, was like a little boy on set of that. He was, I think, when they were, say, ten.

• 38:27Will Arnett?

  Was Hannah there too?

• 38:28Speaker 03

Hannah was around, yeah, absolutely. Yeah.

• 38:31Will Arnett?

Great. And that way, now that was shot in some beautiful spots too, right?

• 38:35Speaker 03

Yeah. I mean, I look, you know, on location in, uh, all down the coast in Italy, we, we, we rehearsed at the famous Cina Cita studio in, in Rome.

• 38:44Will Arnett?

  Uh huh.

• 38:45Speaker 03

And then we shot in Rome, we shot in Ischia, which is this beautiful island.

• 38:49Will Arnett?

  Oh, yeah.

• 38:49Speaker 03

  Off, off, um, Naples.

• 38:51Will Arnett?

  Near Capri.

• 38:52Speaker 03

Near Capri. It's, it, there's three, then Pro Giada, and yeah, it was beautiful.

• 38:56Will Arnett?

Yeah. So, but you're down there, you're, sorry, I just want to say, cause I, I, oh, God, this is so delicious to me. It's you.

• 39:02Jason Bateman?

Sean, I think Will's falling in, as much in love with him as I am, and I'm gonna battle him. I'm gonna battle with Will.

• 39:08Will Arnett?

I've been in love with Jude since the, since we had that dinner over at our buddy's house a few months ago.

• 39:13Speaker 03

Wait, what? What a great dinner.

• 39:14Will Arnett?

  Yeah. You were there too.

• 39:15Jason Bateman?

I thought it was a, a table for two.

• 39:17Will Arnett?

We were all there. Um, that was a great dinner. Uh, so it was you and Matt and, and Gwyneth Paltrow and, uh, Phil Hoffman.

• 39:25Speaker 03

  Phil Hoffman.

• 39:26Will Arnett?

The great Phil Hoffman, Kate Buncha. I mean, what, and, and then Anthony Mangela directing, and you're in Italy. And then my question is, when you do something like that, it's kind of like the Gattaca thing in a way, but it's different. Do you, are you able to, in the moment, did you appreciate it? Did you have moments where you went like, man, this is really amazing? Or not? Is it wasted on you?

• 39:48Speaker 03

Not as much as I wish I had.

• 39:49Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 39:49Speaker 03

Yeah. It's a bit of me looking back.

• 39:52Will Arnett?

But now you can, I'll bet.

• 39:54Speaker 03

I, well, yeah, I'm better at it, but there's, you know, in that, I kind of thought, well, this is what movies are like, you know? Sitting on a beach and sailing a yacht and hanging out with all these cool young movie stars.

• 40:04Will Arnett?

  Ah.

• 40:05Speaker 03

And, uh, it, it was, it was exceptionally special because of the, you know, the, the goodwill that Anthony had, um, uh, deservedly been given through the success of The English Patient. And, and the people that he had assembled were, you know, pretty, pretty extraordinary group from, from the cast to all the crew. Uh, but it was, um, it was a, it was a great, a great experience and, uh, I wish I'd been a little better at just, yeah, living in it and, and realizing how special it was.

• 40:36Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 40:36Jason Bateman?

But the number of projects that you've done.

• 40:40Jason Bateman?

You know, speaking about your ability to assess whether you're, you know, on board a sinking ship or not, um, you know, it's just the number of projects that you've done is just outstanding.

• 40:53Sean Hayes?

And they're all like huge hits.

• 40:55Jason Bateman?

Well, yeah, I mean, that's, I mean, there's a lot of people that have worked a lot, but it's just because they just, they, they, they don't like home and they'll just do whatever. Everything you've done has been incredible. You've certainly been incredible in it. Some of, you know, out of the, the, out of your own power.

• 41:11Will Arnett?

JB, but some of the, but also not, not just the volume, but how different a lot of them have been tonally.

• 41:18Jason Bateman?

And also just like doing Shakespeare on Broadway and shit. I mean, like this guy, you don't know what you're dealing with, with this guy.

• 41:24Sean Hayes?

Jude, I remember like, like Jason just said, all of these great, um, things that you've done your whole life. And then I remember when Spy came out with Melissa McCarthy and I was like, is that Jude Law? Like it was the greatest left hand turn ever. I was like, I've never seen Jude do something like this. It was so good.

• 41:42Speaker 03

I was just, I was just mad about her. I just so wanted to work with her and witness. I think a lot of, honestly, I've, I've, I've been thinking about this recently about why, what, what kind of drives me and a lot of it is curiosity. It's why I've kind of done different franchises too. I sort of, you know, I really, I'm a bit of a film nerd. Like I just love going to the movies and going to, you know, seeing stuff and having an opinion. But I'm also kind of dead curious about how do they do that? How's that done? And, and she was, she was flying at that time and her and Paul Fagan, that, that work that they were doing. I just wanted to witness it. I'll be honest, I did not feel I was in my comfort zone. I was sat, there's a scene opposite her. I suddenly realized very

• 42:26Speaker 03

clearly, oh, you're the straight guy. Okay. This is fine. I can play that. Cause, cause Paul's coming over writing all these notes going, try that, try this. And she's just firing off diff, I mean, I'm holding it together, just trying to keeping a straight face, right? I'm just sort of, just, just don't lose it and really make a fool of yourself. But my goodness, the speed and the ideas and then just, then like talk about going off on a tangent. You're sitting there thinking. What are you talking about?

• 42:53Will Arnett?

She's an absolute, she's an absolute comedy titan. I mean, Melissa McCarthy is great. And also, by the way, should we mention our good friend, my good friend, Jason, yours too, Pete Seraphin, which is in that film as well.

• 43:06Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 43:06Will Arnett?

  In Spy, our lovely Pete.

• 43:09Speaker 03

He's fantastic in that film. There's a scene where the two of them, I think, handcuffed together.

• 43:14Will Arnett?

  Yes.

• 43:14Speaker 03

And they're kind of lying on top. So it's a weird sort of sex TV make out scene, can we escape? God, he's good.

• 43:21Will Arnett?

He's so good. And by the way, a great Pete Seraphin story. Last year, I hadn't spoken to him in about 18 months, maybe almost two years. And we were, we were quite good friends years ago. I mean, we still are, but we sort of hadn't talked to each other. And, and out of the blue, I texted him. So what else is going on? And after a night, I saw that it had been a couple of years. And he answered almost immediately, that's about it.

• 43:51Will Arnett?

  So, so funny.

• 43:52Jason Bateman?

So Jude, with all, with all of the, the great incoming calls, I'm sure you get, how do you, is there, I'm sure you, you base your choices on many, many things, but is there one thing that, that is above all else will, will drag you towards a project? Is it, is it, is it the, is it the director?

• 44:10Speaker 03

Sorry, I was just so resistant. It's like money. No.

• 44:12Will Arnett?

  Yeah, of course.

• 44:14Jason Bateman?

Well, but I mean, look, you know, there's, there's, everyone needs it. Is it, is it filmmaker? Is it role? Is it location? Is it money? Is it schedule? Um, is there one thing that is most important to you ever? Or is it change?

• 44:30Speaker 03

I kind of balance it up, you know? I love the idea of a challenge, a little bit like the role I play in The Order, which just felt like something completely new and different. And the opportunity to work with someone like Justin on that, who I knew would, I was in good hands and he would, he'd sort of take me there.

• 44:46Will Arnett?

  He's the director.

• 44:47Speaker 03

But you know, those films, Justin Cazale, yeah. And he, he, um, that experience was a very good experience, you know, but you have to balance a film like that with, you know, then I was like, okay, now I need to pay my rent. So you know, you've got to kind of find something that's going to balance that out. But also.

• 45:03Will Arnett?

  Black Rabbit.

• 45:03Speaker 03

  I'm curious.

• 45:06Will Arnett?

God, fuck Jay, what a shot in the nuts. He did your thing for the money. Fuck dude. You're in love with the guy. You've had a great experience and he only did it for the fucking dough.

• 45:18Jason Bateman?

  And while he was there.

• 45:19Sean Hayes?

  Did a great job.

• 45:20Will Arnett?

You're a paycheck to him. Keep going, dude. Sorry.

• 45:24Speaker 03

It's all it's, I mean, you mentioned kind of all the, the, the boxes that you check, right? All and all of them at a different time have a different uh uh order. So sometimes, yeah, it's where are we filming this? Um. Who's in it? Who? All of those things come to play.

• 45:42Will Arnett?

Family, like we're bringing kids and all that kind of stuff is important to.

• 45:45Speaker 03

Yeah. So I mean, specifically over the last two years, I've got a house that's being renovated and I'm having one of those nightmares. Uh, and it's just going on and on and off. So me and my wife and the two little ones, I've just been like, okay, well, let's just travel the world. Let's just go wherever I'm working. So we've been.

• 46:03Will Arnett?

  Two years.

• 46:04Speaker 03

For two years. So we really have. We've been in California, then we were in uh Canada and then France and then Australia and then New York. So it's been, it's been a while, but that so really has been just following the um, following the work.

• 46:17Sean Hayes?

  And the kids love it?

• 46:19Speaker 03

And they're very little. They're both, they're both under five. So it's not like, uh, you know, they're, they're, as long as we're both there looking calm and happy. They're calm and happy.

• 46:28Sean Hayes?

Exactly. Exactly. Do you, do you ever find like, I, I always find that fascinating when you do have this schedule that you do. Do you miss a home base? Do you miss a like a groundedness to come back to?

• 46:40Speaker 03

I thought I would more, but I really haven't. And we've found some really beautiful homes around and, and, and some not so great, but, but mostly really good experiences. I tell you what I have found hard. I found it really hard going back to UK because without my house, like I had this lovely home there for, I've, you know, I've, I've always lived there. But going there as a visitor and sort of renting something, it just doesn't feel right. It feels.

• 47:04Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, it feels weird.

• 47:05Speaker 03

Really disconcerting. I was just there for a couple of weeks to see my family, my, my, my parents and um. I don't know, but equally I've learned, I quite like being a foreigner. Quite like being a foreigner in a city. It feels slightly less emotionally tiring. I don't know why. In the UK, you know, if I read the news about the UK and I'm like, oh, not again. What are they doing? You know, I feel so emotionally, it's like, it's like your uncle letting you down. You're like, oh, don't behave like that.

• 47:35Sean Hayes?

Yeah, we don't have anything like that here.

• 47:37Speaker 03

You know, whereas here, here I'm like, well, it's not my problem.

• 47:42Jason Bateman?

So when you go back and you're sitting with your parents at dinner, is there ever a time to reflect and go back like we're doing now about, hey, remember when you guys kind of lit the fuse in me with the theater and stuff like, things have worked out and.

• 47:54Speaker 03

A little bit. My mom's not so well. She, the light in my mom is, is.

• 47:59Jason Bateman?

  I'm sorry.

• 47:59Speaker 03

Or the spirit of my mom is slowly, slowly fading. She's happy and she's, she's not in pain, but she's, you know, she's not who she, she was very much the lightning in our family. She was the kind of trailblazer. She was the one putting on these plays. And telling, you know, packing up our crazy little French Dushovo car and saying, right, we're gonna drive across France and camp. And she just was full of energy and really I think a big part of why I'm doing what I do and my sister does what she does. So I don't, I miss that with her. I certainly have that with my sister still and my dad.

• 48:38Speaker 03

And that's fun. It's nice looking back at those. It's interesting, isn't it? The further away you get from that formative time, how you can reflect on what, what, what impact it was having on you and what direction it was sending you in, you know?

• 48:53Sean Hayes?

  We'll be right back.

• 48:57Sean Hayes?

• 51:57Jason Bateman?

And having done all the stuff that you've done and, and, and really proven any point you ever would have wanted to make or, or, or, or make people proud or yourself proud. Like, I can't imagine that there's any box left unchecked, but you tell me, is, is there, is there something, if it came your way, you go, ah, yeah, that I have not yet done, or I've been avoiding, you know, is it, is it a fricking musical? Is it a voice in an animated film? Is it, I mean, you've just touched so many things.

• 52:28Speaker 03

There are, there are definitely filmmakers out there that I would, that I admire immensely and would really love to work with. And then, and there's, there's the odd part. Yeah, but not, not sort of, I mean, there are roles in, in Shakespeare that I'd love to play one day on stage, but that, that's sort of not, not necessarily immediately. But honestly, something you and I talked about and something you're so good at encouraging, I've seen you do it with others, is, is directing. I mean, I love, I love the idea of it. It scares the hell out of me. You make it look incredibly straightforward and easy. I don't know how you do that. I mean, watching you direct, lead that team out of the gates and perform in it was really quite remarkable, mate.

• 53:12Speaker 03

And, and it, it kept making me think.

• 53:14Jason Bateman?

Having a partner like you makes it easy, truly.

• 53:16Speaker 03

It makes, it made, it made me really look at it and consider again. Because it scares me because of the scale of the decisions.

• 53:23Will Arnett?

Is it one of those because you thought like, fuck, if this guy could do it, then anybody could?

• 53:27Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 53:28Will Arnett?

I get that, that makes sense.

• 53:29Jason Bateman?

  It's not as scary.

• 53:30Will Arnett?

If this simpleton, if this, uh, no, I'd talk a little bit about it because he is, and Jason is, and we are so proud of him. We love him dearly and we're so proud of what he's been able to do.

• 53:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 53:41Will Arnett?

What it was like working with Jason as a director, talk a little bit about that because we do talk about it. We haven't had anybody on here really to talk about that experience.

• 53:51Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 53:53Speaker 03

The mood first I I so talking to those who don't know.

• 53:56Jason Bateman?

  Talk about his explosion.

• 53:57Speaker 03

Yeah, no, this is the thing. You know, you guys will know the most important thing I think on a film set is the atmosphere, right? It's a massive team, all these different groups and skill sets doing all these different things. But they all want to be appreciated. They all want their their their time and they will need their time. And Jason is just a master at keeping that going and every I mean, the spirit on this company of this company. I've got to tell you, cast, crew, everyone was so positive. I mean, that was demonstrated at the end. We had a wonderful wrap party. Everybody's there with their family. Everyone stays from like, you know, early doors to the close. I mean, it was so.

• 54:32Will Arnett?

  Which is unusual.

• 54:33Speaker 03

Popular. Yeah, it is unusual. And that was led by him. And the style of the piece was was set up by Jason because it was his. How he saw it and he, like I said, led us out of the gates. He directed the first two. And so setting that up and getting that right and sort of what's the word? Ingraining it in the DNA of the piece. And then as an actor, right? And then he's also there as an actor, playing opposite you, leading by example, but also there was the, you know, there's there are those moments where suddenly it's just those little little tiny words of suggestion or little tiny nudges like this is great, this is good, but what should we go down this path? Should we try this? And it it's those moments where you feel like, oh, this is so much fun.

• 55:18Speaker 03

Yeah, right. You're kind of playing and you're not, you know, even if you're doing a really dramatic scene, it's you're kind of giggling to yourself, thinking like, oh, we're doing this like, you know.

• 55:27Jason Bateman?

And our parents are out of town.

• 55:28Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And we're allowed to, we can keep going.

• 55:32Will Arnett?

Yeah, JB, do you have that a little bit of like, I can't believe I got the keys to the car here?

• 55:35Jason Bateman?

Oh, every second of the day.

• 55:38Speaker 03

  And all the toys.

• 55:39Jason Bateman?

Yeah, exactly. And it was also sort of like, you got to be such a smarty pants when you're directing and be sort of serious. And you got to think about every every corner of the room. But this character I was playing was such a dingbat, like a lovely sort of like just simpleton. And so happy to throw that switch in between like, okay, here we go. Ready? Yeah, okay, let's let's roll. And then I was sort of joking, I told you, I said, you know, the the the sort of the, um, uh, what do you call it? The, uh, the, the, the fix or the, the, the secret to going into my character. All I have to do is just separate my jaw. Because this guy's kind of a mouth breather. Yeah, I go from director to this character by just separating my jaw. And we're ready to go. Here we go. Let's roll.

• 56:23Sean Hayes?

  That's really funny.

• 56:25Will Arnett?

Well, I will say, I will say before you'd actually direct, you'd actually, you'd actually directed before, but I will say our experience of working on Arrested Development, Jason was the ultimate team captain. And I also learned a lot about what it takes to be a captain. No, but what it, what it takes to be a captain from, from that guy. It was potentially the only thing I learned because he has nothing else to teach.

• 56:48Jason Bateman?

I can get you to 10. I can count. You can count to 10, but I can teach you.

• 56:52Will Arnett?

Uh, and, and, uh, what, what do you, what's your impression, Jude, just quickly, thin slice of Sean? Take a look at him over there.

• 57:01Sean Hayes?

I look like a thin slice of white bread.

• 57:04Will Arnett?

I mean, be honest, be brutally honest.

• 57:07Speaker 03

I like the, I, I'm going to join Sean in that bubble. I think, I like the idea of being pushed around.

• 57:13Jason Bateman?

  Zip him in.

• 57:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 57:14Jason Bateman?

He's just trying to keep his powder dry for the Star Wars section of the interview, which we can start now, Sean, if you're all set and ready to go.

• 57:20Sean Hayes?

I, that, and, but I have one question before. I am ready to go on that. But one question before.

• 57:26Jason Bateman?

Scotty slides in on a chair like Saturday Night Live.

• 57:29Will Arnett?

  Just like this.

• 57:30Sean Hayes?

We're just saying stuff. No, Jude, you know, we touched on it before a little bit. I want to go back just for a second. That kind of air, that time when you're sitting between jobs and you're like, God, is something going to come and that uncertainty of what we do. When you were younger and you went through those, did you have other jobs? Did you, is there any time like, God, I should start thinking of something else to do with my life because I don't think anything's going to come. And then talented Mr. Ripley comes or whatever it is.

• 57:55Speaker 03

Fortunately not, and I lived a pretty simple life early on. And then I became a father pretty young and that would be all consuming. So that I was always, I mean, it, it, it, there was always something to do.

• 58:10Sean Hayes?

So fatherhood didn't scare you into thinking about another occupation?

• 58:14Speaker 03

  Well, luckily.

• 58:15Sean Hayes?

  Like in their study?

• 58:16Speaker 03

It was never that, it was never so much that I suddenly thought. And if it was, then I was usually saved by, uh, uh, the life support of another job or a potential another job. But I realized in the last couple of years, it's been a really big shift for me with, with my company because suddenly. Even if, you know, they're not coming to fruition, although we've had a pretty good run. So in the last couple of years, just having the sense that you've kind of got your, you've got your hands on the reins and you can develop stuff and you're communicating with writers and directors and.

• 58:45Jason Bateman?

This is riffraff with the great Ben Jackson.

• 58:48Speaker 03

Great Ben Jackson, who's been alongside me for like 22 years and, and, and the company has given me a much better sense of navigating those, those moments of thinking, cause, cause ultimately you're still an actor, right? Waiting for someone to think you're right for a part.

• 59:04Jason Bateman?

Right, right. But if you can cook your own food, you know, it's, it's a real privileged place to be and, and you don't take it lightly and, and you work really, really hard as a producer, as does he. Yeah.

• 59:14Speaker 03

Yeah, I love it. I like the process of, I love finding ideas. I love introducing writers to directors and seeing that kind of blossom and bloom and that is a side I love it.

• 59:26Jason Bateman?

That's the way it happened with Order, right? Didn't, didn't you contact Justin Kurzell for, for this?

• 59:31Speaker 03

  That's right. That's right.

• 59:32Jason Bateman?

Yeah, tell, tell, what was that conversation like? Did you know him before?

• 59:35Speaker 03

  No, not at all.

• 59:36Jason Bateman?

You were just a fan of?

• 59:38Speaker 03

Massive fan and, and you know, when you suddenly someone, and it's never me, I'm, I'm really good at chiming in, having an opinion, but I'm never someone, I'm never very good with a blank page. You know when people go, okay, let's discuss the directors. I always go, uh.

• 59:49Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 59:51Speaker 03

And you know, you can't be, I want to be smart, the smart one who goes, I've got a left of field idea. I'm always like, you go first and then, and then I'm really strong to go, no, no, no, not them, not them, not them.

• 1:00:00Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:01Speaker 03

But someone mentioned Justin, I think it was Zach or it could have been Brian.

• 1:00:04Jason Bateman?

  Zach Baylin.

• 1:00:05Speaker 03

Zach Baylin, our wonderful writer, who we worked together on Black Rabbit. And it just was one of those, oh, yes, this is perfect fit. This guy makes, this guy looks at really dark areas and kind of toxic people, but puts them in a world where you. You start, it's not about empathizing with them, but you understand them and he makes it kind of safe. Did you go into their worlds? And then he also operates on this high energy. He's a, he's a big guy and he loves capturing the energy of scenes and drama. And he was just the perfect fit. So, yeah, we, we had, it was, uh, we zoomed with him. He was in his, he was in his house in Tasmania with his big beard.

• 1:00:48Speaker 03

And it looked literally like, and his hair all blown, it looked like he'd just come off a, you know, hauled in a whale and kind of come in. Come in and sat there like this and just blew us away with his, his insight. Yeah, I think I can do this.

• 1:01:01Jason Bateman?

Yeah, and then, and then when we were looking to get a director for the finale of Black Rabbit, um, Zach and Jude, uh, and, and Zach's partner, uh, Kate, they suggested, uh, Justin Krasel. And I was like, are you fucking kidding? We're not gonna get Justin Krasel to direct the finale of this thing? And they're like, no, no, no, we can ask him. I'm like, what do you mean? You can, how do you know him? Well, we just finished a movie with him. Come on, you guys just did a movie? So I had no idea that they had just worked with Justin and thank God it went well. Cause they, they reached out and asked him and.

• 1:01:33Speaker 03

  He answered the phone.

• 1:01:34Will Arnett?

They said, yeah. And was the, was the reaction from the crew when he came to, was there like, now we got a director on?

• 1:01:39Jason Bateman?

  Now we can get going.

• 1:01:40Speaker 03

  I saw that.

• 1:01:41Jason Bateman?

  There was a lot of.

• 1:01:42Speaker 03

  We just teed that up.

• 1:01:43Will Arnett?

I know, I know, I know. But by the way, if I don't do it, if I didn't say that, Jason would call me after and say, are you okay? Like, are you sick?

• 1:01:51Jason Bateman?

  You were a little sluggish.

• 1:01:52Speaker 03

  A little under the weather.

• 1:01:55Will Arnett?

Uh, let's talk about Star Wars.

• 1:01:56Jason Bateman?

Yes, Andor, uh, Acolyte, uh, where does Star Wars, uh, skeleton crew come in the line?

• 1:02:04Speaker 03

  I mean, it's, it's absolutely standalone.

• 1:02:06Jason Bateman?

Oh, it is? I like that.

• 1:02:08Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, it fits in, I think it's around the same time as the Mandalorian. But here's, here's what got me, you know, I, I was six, seven when the first film came out. And I was thinking about this the other day. I mean, I don't remember going, I maybe saw The Rescuers or One Hundred and One Dalmatians.

• 1:02:26Jason Bateman?

  Yeah, totally.

• 1:02:27Speaker 03

And then, and then Star Wars. And like, so to me, that was cinema. I was like, holy cow. What the hell is this? And not only that, for the next five years, it was what I played. I really, you know, I, it was, I was living it. I was running around my yard going pew pew, right? I'm Han, you're, you know, I'm Vader.

• 1:02:46Jason Bateman?

  Still am.

• 1:02:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:02:48Will Arnett?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:49Speaker 03

And, you know, so it was formative and, and, and John, John Watts just had this awesome idea. He, he called me and said, so look, you know, what if we, all that awe and wonder and, and, and, dazzled that you, that we had as kids, what if we put the kids in that world? So it's taking goonies, it's taking normal kids, you kind of argue, they don't get on with their parents, or they, they don't get on with each other, they don't like school, they run away, they get lost and they're in that world.

• 1:03:17Sean Hayes?

Yeah, that's cool. That's cool. That's really cool.

• 1:03:19Speaker 03

And I was just like, this is, this is a great idea.

• 1:03:21Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, I love that.

• 1:03:22Jason Bateman?

Have you enjoyed shoot, uh, that style of, of work with the, sort of the volume stages, the green screen, the, the?

• 1:03:28Speaker 03

It was all volume, luckily, yeah. I mean, I think had it been all green, I don't know that I would have enjoyed it as much. I've done that before. The volume is really wonderful. I mean, it's super.

• 1:03:37Will Arnett?

  Really?

• 1:03:38Jason Bateman?

For Tracy, this is, this is a stage that's basically, uh, every wall is like a big movie screen. So, uh, you, you're kind of living.

• 1:03:45Speaker 03

  High definition.

• 1:03:45Jason Bateman?

Yeah, you're living in an atmosphere.

• 1:03:47Speaker 03

So they, they, they, they, they put the, the flooring in. So say you're on a moon, the floor is dust and sand and rocks and boulders, but it goes right up to the volume screen and then the perspective of the screen just carries on. So you can be standing in a desert that disappears for hundreds of miles with ships flying around you and it, with a wind blowing, right? They use a wind machine. So you, you're, you're, for all intents and purposes, you're on that moon.

• 1:04:11Will Arnett?

And so it's not just for the viewer too. As, as an actor, when, when you're performing, you're actually seeing that. You're, you're experiencing that as well.

• 1:04:19Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, that's really cool.

• 1:04:20Speaker 03

And, and, and the same goes for then a more cluttered set, like a market. We did this huge spaceport and they built all the, um, you know, the machine, uh, the, uh, the bars and the, the stalls and what have you. And each avenue looks like it just goes on and on and on and on. And you've got creatures crossing over. And of course, it, it, what you've really only got is, I'd say, uh, fifty foot of that. And then the rest is just all on these huge screens.

• 1:04:43Sean Hayes?

Yeah, that's really cool. I want to go back to, I have a question about.

• 1:04:46Will Arnett?

You could do one where you have your dad, like he's there, you know what I mean?

• 1:04:49Sean Hayes?

  Oh, man, could you imagine?

• 1:04:50Jason Bateman?

  I don't think there's, I don't think there's screens big enough.

• 1:04:52Will Arnett?

And you could have it so that he's not leaving, he's standing.

• 1:04:54Sean Hayes?

You can just click the screen on pause.

• 1:04:56Will Arnett?

He's not leaving. Leaving your family. Wait, before we get out of the skeleton crew world, talk about who else is in that with you? Cause I think I read somebody that I know is in that with you. Who else is in it?

• 1:05:08Speaker 03

Kerry Connan and Tunde from TV on the radio. And then there are the four kids.

• 1:05:16Speaker 03

Do you know Tunde? He's a lovely guy.

• 1:05:18Will Arnett?

I met him a couple of times. Really cool. A big fan of TV on the radio.

• 1:05:21Speaker 03

Yeah, me too. And his interesting piece of trivia.

• 1:05:24Will Arnett?

He was great in Rachel Got Married. Remember he was in that?

• 1:05:26Speaker 03

That's right. That's right. Demi, Demi film.

• 1:05:28Will Arnett?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:05:29Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. Did they play all the music live in that? I think they did.

• 1:05:33Will Arnett?

  Did they really?

• 1:05:33Speaker 03

Like in real time. I think that was, that was, that was the idea on that film that when, cause remember they're in a band and they're all playing at the wedding.

• 1:05:41Will Arnett?

I love the way that film looked. Do you remember the color of that film?

• 1:05:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:05:45Jason Bateman?

Is it Ted Demi or Jonathan Demi?

• 1:05:47Speaker 03

  Oh, good question. Jonathan.

• 1:05:49Will Arnett?

  Both, yeah.

• 1:05:50Sean Hayes?

Um Jude, when you, when you named all those.

• 1:05:52Will Arnett?

Nick Frost. Is Nick Frost in it?

• 1:05:54Speaker 03

Nick Frost is the voice of a droid.

• 1:05:56Sean Hayes?

  Oh, I love Nick Frost.

• 1:05:57Will Arnett?

I, Nick Frost is one of my favorites. Sorry, Sean, he's one of my favorite of all time. I love Nick. He's so.

• 1:06:04Jason Bateman?

  Me too.

• 1:06:04Will Arnett?

Fucking, we all know. He's so fucking funny.

• 1:06:08Sean Hayes?

Yeah, he is funny. When you, when you were going Jude, when you were talking about going from city to city to, you know, in the last few years, just going all those cities you named. Is it hard to keep a schedule for eating properly, working out, taking care of yourself with the time differences? And then the, living in a trailer and then coming back to a hotel? It seems like so, it's like to me, it seems so disruptive and a gorgeous life because we're all doing what we love to do. But how do you maintain a good schedule for yourself?

• 1:06:39Speaker 03

Allow a lot of time when I land somewhere to get over jet lag. Like I'm not one of those people who can just pick straight up and get, I like, give me a couple of days. Cause I, I think jet lag really is like an illness. You've got to kind of love yourself and go. It's like you've got flu. Just go to bed. You know, and but you've also then, yeah, once you're out of that, I, I, I enjoy, I really like keeping fit. So I train quite hard every day, usually before I go to work. So whatever that time is, I usually go do something for. An hour.

• 1:07:08Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 1:07:08Speaker 03

And then I usually take my own food.

• 1:07:11Jason Bateman?

  Oh, you do?

• 1:07:12Speaker 03

Eat when I really want. I can't be doing on a set where they're like lunch and you're like, it's 5pm.

• 1:07:17Jason Bateman?

  Right.

• 1:07:17Speaker 03

We're talking like, what was I meant to, I got to eat at the right time.

• 1:07:21Jason Bateman?

  Right, right.

• 1:07:22Speaker 03

Uh, so I eat like, I get up and I eat in the morning. I make sure I've got food. So when it's midday or one, I eat my lunch.

• 1:07:28Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:28Will Arnett?

Are you particular about your food? Like, do you eat quite healthily and etcetera?

• 1:07:33Speaker 03

Yeah, I, I, I'll eat anything, but I, I kind of get, I get, I can feel myself getting, uh, a bit slower and stodgier if I, if I don't eat well.

• 1:07:43Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:44Speaker 03

But I'm not, I'm, I am kind of got a funny relationship. Like, I really love a good restaurant. I love good food. But equally, it's just fuel.

• 1:07:54Jason Bateman?

I like lamb. You like lamb?

• 1:07:57Speaker 03

  I love lamb. Lamb chops.

• 1:07:58Jason Bateman?

  Yes, I love lamb chops.

• 1:08:00Will Arnett?

Hey, man, we're not doing non sequitur. Is that a left field right now?

• 1:08:04Jason Bateman?

  I love lamb!

• 1:08:07Will Arnett?

You know what? I had lamb last night.

• 1:08:08Jason Bateman?

  I want lamb chops.

• 1:08:09Will Arnett?

I had lamb last night. Yeah, I did.

• 1:08:10Jason Bateman?

Wait, they're at the house or did you go out? Did you go to a restaurant, Willie?

• 1:08:13Will Arnett?

No, I had lamb at, at home here. Yeah. And you know what? I was really upset.

• 1:08:16Speaker 03

  Was it a lamb shank?

• 1:08:17Will Arnett?

It was, it was, uh, they were lamb chops and I didn't have any, um, somehow, uh, there was no, uh, mint jelly or mint sauce.

• 1:08:25Speaker 03

Uh, you see, my wife loves the mint jelly. I'm not fussed about that. I, I like, as long as there's a little, as long as it's got a little seasoning on it.

• 1:08:32Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:32Will Arnett?

I just, I really need it. You know, Jude, we, I honestly, I don't know about you guys. I mean, we could just keep this going forever, probably. If you wanted to.

• 1:08:40Jason Bateman?

  I told you.

• 1:08:40Will Arnett?

I know. You were, Jason, you were so right. He's, uh, we're gonna save this for the wrap up, but he is something else. Uh, Jude, it, what an absolute delight. We have kept you.

• 1:08:50Speaker 03

  No, for me too.

• 1:08:51Will Arnett?

  Oh, God.

• 1:08:52Jason Bateman?

I'm so happy you did this. We'll do it again when Black Rabbit comes on in about a year.

• 1:08:57Speaker 03

  We got it.

• 1:08:58Jason Bateman?

And, uh, I just, I'm crazy about you. Love you. I'm gonna talk to you. I'm actually gonna call you right after the end of this, cause I need to ask you a question about something. Um, but thank you, buddy, for doing this. Enjoy the rest of your, your, your press trip. Stay rested and, uh, get back to the family and enjoy the winter.

• 1:09:14Speaker 03

Yeah. It's what a joy and so lovely to see the three of you. This is, this has been a joy. Thank you.

• 1:09:19Sean Hayes?

Yeah, it's good to see you, Jude.

• 1:09:20Jason Bateman?

Great luck with the order. Everybody go see the order. It's so damn good.

• 1:09:25Will Arnett?

Go see anything that Jude's in. Go see it. Go watch it. Go stream it. Go see it. Jude, you are a gentleman. Thank you, sir.

• 1:09:33Speaker 03

  Take care.

• 1:09:33Sean Hayes?

  Thank you, buddy.

• 1:09:34Speaker 03

Best wishes. Do I do that?

• 1:09:37Jason Bateman?

Yep. He did it. He did it.

• 1:09:40Sean Hayes?

  He's fantastic.

• 1:09:42Jason Bateman?

So guys, I'm telling you, this guy, if you think he's great on a, on a podcast or a Zoom call, uh, try going in the trenches with him for eight months.

• 1:09:52Sean Hayes?

You always talked about how much joy you had with him, uh, facing him.

• 1:09:56Will Arnett?

You really did. And you, and you, um, and it was unsolicited. Like you would just be like, God, that July. While you were making it from every stage of it, you're like, God, this guy is great. God, you know, blah, blah, blah. Like you were just, and you meant it.

• 1:10:08Jason Bateman?

Yeah. Yeah. You know, he's one of the best partners ever. I'll tell you, one of the other ones was, was a guy we mentioned was Matt Damon. Uh, did that, uh, that, that little bit on air. And it's, I mean, like, just the level of experience and professionalism with these guys is, uh, is just not to be, um, undervalued on a, on a, in a group of.

• 1:10:26Sean Hayes?

Also probably comes from gratitude too. Like we all know what it's like not to work. And then when you get, you know, when you're, yeah, you're lucky enough to be in a position.

• 1:10:34Jason Bateman?

They definitely appreciate where they're at. Um, super kind.

• 1:10:36Will Arnett?

Have you ever seen that, Gattaca?

• 1:10:38Jason Bateman?

I did, but I don't, I don't remember it, which is not uncommon.

• 1:10:41Sean Hayes?

  I can't believe I've never seen it.

• 1:10:43Will Arnett?

  Sean?

• 1:10:44Sean Hayes?

I know. I'm gonna watch it.

• 1:10:45Will Arnett?

I really urge people, and I, again, I don't want to, I've waxed on a lot, but that, that film is really a remarkable film. It's really good. And Jude is so, it's hard to imagine that it's one of the first things he did because he's so excellent in it.

• 1:11:02Jason Bateman?

You know, he never, he's one of those actors, never sucks.

• 1:11:04Will Arnett?

Never, ever. You're exactly right, JB. He's in the John Goodman school. He never, ever sucks. Ever.

• 1:11:11Jason Bateman?

Actors who know kind of what their goalposts are and have the discipline to not, you know, or the overindulgence to step outside of that. Like he finds a version of himself in every character that he does, and yet he never plays anything safe. So, you know, he's just.

• 1:11:25Sean Hayes?

  Pretty cool.

• 1:11:26Jason Bateman?

Thank you for bringing him on.

• 1:11:28Will Arnett?

I was so happy to be able to have him because obviously he should have been your guest, but I was happy to.

• 1:11:34Jason Bateman?

  I'll get him next year.

• 1:11:34Will Arnett?

I wanted him a long time ago. Before you guys started working together.

• 1:11:38Jason Bateman?

  Oh, really?

• 1:11:39Will Arnett?

Yeah, yeah. So I wanted him a long time ago and then it just sort of, this is when it happened. I'm glad that we made it through the entire interview without talking about fucking Robert Downey. You know what I mean?

• 1:11:51Jason Bateman?

  Oh, that guy.

• 1:11:52Will Arnett?

About Sherlock. Because Downey has gotten so much fucking free air. I'm so mad at Downey.

• 1:11:58Jason Bateman?

  What? Because why?

• 1:12:01Will Arnett?

  Just in general, just because.

• 1:12:03Jason Bateman?

  Just success? The success?

• 1:12:04Will Arnett?

His success and I know he's very deserving of it, blah, blah. But I'm just kind of, you know.

• 1:12:11Jason Bateman?

Let's have a counterpoint. Where do you think he's over indexing?

• 1:12:17Will Arnett?

  Uh, opinions.

• 1:12:18Jason Bateman?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:20Will Arnett?

He's, he'll just, he'll call me, he'll, you want to talk about FaceTime? You always, he Face, Downey FaceTimes in a way like it's so out of the blue.

• 1:12:30Jason Bateman?

  Uninvited FaceTimes.

• 1:12:31Will Arnett?

And then he's in the bath and he'll go, you know, I was thinking what you should do. And I'm like, fucking what, man?

• 1:12:36Jason Bateman?

Towel off and just call me or write me.

• 1:12:41Will Arnett?

I do love him. I do love him to death though, I will say.

• 1:12:44Jason Bateman?

He's doing a big play. Go see his play.

• 1:12:47Will Arnett?

Go see McNeil with our good friend, Robert Downey.

• 1:12:49Sean Hayes?

I think it's probably closed by now. What depends on when this airs.

• 1:12:52Will Arnett?

Oh, yeah, it depends on when it airs.

• 1:12:53Jason Bateman?

  Lincoln Center.

• 1:12:53Will Arnett?

But I tell you what never closes is Jude Law's talent.

• 1:12:57Jason Bateman?

  Right, so good.

• 1:12:58Will Arnett?

That is always open. Always open, 24/7. Think about, Jay, you said, and Sean, you named out like, think about all the different films that he's, when I was thinking about.

• 1:13:09Jason Bateman?

But you're not even touching his theater. This guy has been on Broadway with like, Othello or Hamlet or Macbeth or probably all three of them. I think he got a Tony nomination for one of those. Or maybe one.

• 1:13:19Will Arnett?

I mean, he's just done. We didn't, we didn't mention, we did not mention the, the Sherlock Holmes films, which were major, major hits. Road to Perdition, you ever seen that? Incredible.

• 1:13:33Sean Hayes?

Yeah, so good. I love that movie.

• 1:13:34Will Arnett?

Cold Mountain, he got an Academy Award nomination for that, was amazing. AI? He was in that film AI back in...

• 1:13:40Sean Hayes?

  Yeah, I love that.

• 1:13:41Will Arnett?

  Like 20 years ago.

• 1:13:42Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:43Will Arnett?

Enemy at the Gates, you ever seen that film? Enemy at the Gates where he plays, I think he plays like a sniper in Stalingrad? Is that the one?

• 1:13:50Sean Hayes?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:13:51Jason Bateman?

Really? No, I haven't seen that one.

• 1:13:52Will Arnett?

  Oh, dude.

• 1:13:53Sean Hayes?

I'm up for all the same parts, all the time.

• 1:13:55Will Arnett?

  You are.

• 1:13:55Jason Bateman?

  Three callbacks.

• 1:13:56Will Arnett?

  You've been up for them.

• 1:13:58Sean Hayes?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:59Jason Bateman?

The animated version of each of these.

• 1:14:01Sean Hayes?

  Sniper, real snipers, yeah.

• 1:14:03Will Arnett?

  Really?

• 1:14:04Sean Hayes?

Yeah. Sniper City. One's called Sniper City, the other one's called Sniper.

• 1:14:08Will Arnett?

  Sniper City?

• 1:14:09Sean Hayes?

It's one, another one's called Sniper, I didn't even know her.

• 1:14:11Will Arnett?

  Wow.

• 1:14:11Sean Hayes?

  Uh, yeah.

• 1:14:12Will Arnett?

You know what? I haven't heard of it. I wonder who all of those were written.

• 1:14:16Sean Hayes?

Those are out, those are out now.

• 1:14:18Will Arnett?

I wonder who they were written.

• 1:14:20Sean Hayes?

Those were written by... Jason doesn't even say it.

• 1:14:24Will Arnett?

  No. Say bye, Jason.

• 1:14:27Sean Hayes?

  Bye.

• 1:14:39Will Arnett?
