There are some scenes in this documentary where she is speaking a gibberish language.

And the language that she's speaking is carny.

Hey, true crime besties. Welcome back to an all-new episode of Serial Asleep.

• 1:31Annie Elise?

Hello, hello, hello, and welcome back to an all-new episode of Serial Asleep with me, your host, Annie E. Lys. And today's Thursday, which usually would mean headline highlights, where I walk you through everything happening this week in true crime. However, I have a very special episode for you today. It's going to be a focus on one particular case/situation, rather than going into all of the different cases that we normally talk about. I also do not have Amy O'Brien with me today, so I apologize for all of you who are waiting for me to say hello to her. But here, let me break down what we're going to be talking about together today, because it's something that has been...

• 2:15Annie Elise?

I don't know. I've been working on this behind the scenes for quite a few weeks now. It's been very difficult to find someone who speaks this language. And maybe you already know where I'm going with this based on past cases that we've covered, but let me break it down. When I released my last Mackenzie Shirilla episode, I truly believed that we were going to be done with that girl, that we would never talk about her again. We could leave her behind in the dust and never revisit it. However, there was this nagging feeling that I just could not shake. And I know a lot of you were wondering too, why do her and her mom speak in this secret language? Not only in some of the body cam footage that we saw, but in the jail calls.

• 2:58Annie Elise?

And it's a sect off of pig Latin. It's carny language because her mom grew up in the carnival circuit and taught Mackenzie the language. But like, why are they speaking to each other this way? And more importantly, what the hell are they even saying? So while I thought that we were leaving the Shirilla of it all behind, today we are going to revisit it very briefly. And I think that this will be the last time. And the reason why is because I was able to track down someone who speaks that language fluently. So you know, my nosey ass had to get in there, decode these calls, translate these calls and figure out just what the hell they were saying. So what I'm going to do is actually go through all of those old prison calls,

• 3:42Annie Elise?

clip out the part where they are speaking in this language, and then be joined by someone who speaks the language fluently themselves and translate everything for you. Now, before we jump in, I did want to share some exciting news with you guys because it's that time of year. I've already seen the messages start trickling in, but our annual subscription sale is officially here. So if you've been on the fence or you've been thinking about joining our true crime club, whether that's on Patreon because you're a video watcher, you want the episodes ad-free, you want more access, you want behind the scenes, you want vlogs, giveaways, our 24/7 group chat, all of the things. Well, now it is. And for my Patreon users, like I said, you can choose the tier that's right for you. • 5:10Annie Elise?

However, the deal will not last for long. We only offer this discount once a year and it expires very soon. So if you've been on the fence, now is the time to, you know, jump in headfirst. Head to patreon.com/annieelise to join on Patreon, especially if you are more of a video consumer. Or if you're listening on Apple Podcasts, simply open the show page and tap the Annie Elise Plus subscribe button. More content, more access, and no ads. Sounds pretty good, right? So go sign up. Well, it's ending soon. You're welcome. Now, after listening to over 100 jail calls between Mackenzie and her friends and her mom and, you know, all of the people, two things really stuck out to me. One, Mackenzie

• 5:49Annie Elise?

is always irritated, just always on 99 level of like spoiled brat mode. And two, when Mackenzie talks with her mom, she does almost every single time start talking in code.

• 6:02Speaker 04

God, another girl just got moved on our pod. She looks low as fuck.

• 6:08Speaker 05

  Well, she may be distraught.

• 6:10Speaker 04

  No, she looks retarded.

• 6:18Speaker 04

But please call meditation and see if you can get our video calls moved to the other terminal.

• 6:22Speaker 05

  Yeah, video call and connoisseur.

• 6:25Speaker 04

Girl, I'm not she's banging on the door like, girl, you just got here.

• 6:30Speaker 04

You just got here, shut the fuck up.

• 6:34Speaker 05

  How old is she?

• 6:35Speaker 04

I don't know, probably old as fuck, like everyone else in here.

• 6:39Speaker 04

Oh my god, she's a- we didn't need to be like, she's a- she's a- I was like asking her, like I was like, why are you in here? And she's like, oh I do crack. I'm like, what?

• 6:48Speaker 05

  What?

• 6:49Speaker 04

She's like, yeah, I do- yeah, she don't look like it, at all.

• 6:51Speaker 05

Oh my gosh, Kenzie, af- after court, um, when we were sitting there waiting, um, a guy came out with his client. Right, the lawyer came out with his client, and he goes, "Man, you just did me dirty. You know what you were doing, you just did me dirty." And he goes, "I just saved your life. Like, I literally just saved your life." Right? And he goes, "You know what you did, I don't even want to get into it." And his lawyer was like, "Well, you can't, you can't smoke crack. You can't sell crack." And he's like, "You don't care, you don't know me, and you don't care that I sell crack."

• 7:21Speaker 04

  I'm dead as fuck.

• 7:24Speaker 04

Yes. And I was like, "You don't look like you do that at all, like you- she's pretty as fuck, like she doesn't look like it."

• 7:31Speaker 05

  Maybe they got it early.

• 7:32Speaker 04

And you know what I found out?

• 7:34Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 7:35Speaker 04

Hold on, I'm about to see.

• 7:38Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 7:40Speaker 04

Did you know, like, cocaine is- is crap, I didn't know that.

• 7:45Speaker 05

  Crack cocaine?

• 7:46Speaker 04

I didn't know that, though. I thought it was-

• 7:48Speaker 05

Oh, so people are snorting crack?

• 7:51Speaker 04

  Yes, so-

• 7:52Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 7:53Speaker 04

  I'm a-

• 7:54Speaker 05

  What?

• 7:56Speaker 04

That means, um, did crack before.

• 7:58Speaker 05

  Oh, I don't like that.

• 8:00Speaker 04

I always was like, I would never do crack, I never did crack.

• 8:03Speaker 05

  No.

• 8:04Speaker 04

  That's crazy.

• 8:07Speaker 05

  I don't like that.

• 8:09Speaker 04

That is crazy, but like, it's like, you have to smoke it, like, in a pipe, for it to be cracked.

• 8:14Speaker 05

Yeah, I know, right. But like, why? What's the difference? Why is it a different name, if it is what it is?

• 8:20Speaker 04

Because it's like hard and soft, apparently, I was asking her about it, and then she told me, like, 'cause like, she like burnt, like, she had a hole in her nose because of, um-

• 8:27Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 8:27Speaker 04

  -snorting too much.

• 8:30Speaker 05

  Oh my god.

• 8:33Speaker 04

  Here.

• 8:36Speaker 05

  What the hell?

• 8:37Speaker 04

Mm-hmm. She's pretty as fuck, though. She's like forty, forty-three or something like that. She's so pretty. Like, I like her.

• 8:42Speaker 05

Oh, I hope she gets saved.

• 8:44Annie Elise?

So like I said, the language that they're speaking is called Carney. And I'm not saying that to be disrespectful or anything like that, because I have seen a lot of people say that it's Pig Latin, it's this and that. It's a version of that, but technically it is called the Carney language, which is short for Carnival. So first what I did is I checked the case files to see if any of the investigators had any of these calls translated. But all I could find was a single photo. So then I scoured the internet, started making some calls, talking to, you know, Carnival workers, Irish travelers. I don't want to say the G-word, but maybe you know what I'm talking about. And when I started looking into it further, I did come across a couple of social media posts

• 9:25Annie Elise?

that suggested that Mackenzie and her family were a part of the gypsy culture. Now, is that totally politically correct? Maybe not. I've had mixed things slide in my DM, but I'm just relaying to you what it is being called out there. So if there is a better term I can use, absolutely. Feel free to educate me on that. But I went back into the files, and I want you to listen to this clip that I found.

• 9:51Speaker 04

I'm irritated that my messages aren't working.

• 9:55Speaker 05

So what was she saying about a gypsy?

• 9:57Speaker 04

Oh, she was... So you know that show on TLC where like they wear them big-ass dresses and like, you have to get married by like fifteen and shit, like? She thought it was that.

• 10:07Speaker 05

  Oh, my goodness.

• 10:08Speaker 04

And I was like, no, we're like the, we're like the dancing ones.

• 10:10Speaker 05

  Like Admirelga, right.

• 10:12Speaker 04

  Yes, we're like that, like...

• 10:14Speaker 05

Like Stevie Nicks, Japone like Stevie Nicks.

• 10:17Speaker 04

I don't know what that is, and I don't think they know what that is either.

• 10:20Speaker 05

Everybody knows Stevie Nicks is like a really famous singer who dresses like a gypsy. We're just a theatrical musical type, you could say that.

• 10:27Speaker 04

Yeah, we're not like the... Yeah. Yeah, because she was like, I could tell. I was like, I was like, you know what I'm saying? I was like, oh, no. And then she was like, no. She was like, no, I just could tell you were talking shit. And I was like, I'm dead as fuck.

• 10:41Speaker 05

Like, like gypsies, musicians, and actors. I mean, I'm sorry, actors, musicians, and theater. That's where.

• 10:48Speaker 04

I feel like all gypsies are just like creative, too.

• 10:51Speaker 05

  Right.

• 10:51Annie Elise?

Now, I don't know anybody on the planet who personally doesn't know who Stevie Nicks is, but that's okay. So, anyway, now that we have connected the dots between the shirlas and the Carney talk, it's time to translate the calls. So, like I said, in my quest to find the most accurate Carney translator, I found somebody even better. And her name is Kate Lincoln Goldfinch. Now, Kate is not only fluent in Carney, but she is also an attorney who can help answer some questions that I personally have had about these phone calls. So, with that, we are going to get into this interview with Kate.

• 11:27Speaker 06

My name's Kate Lincoln Goldfinch, and I'm actually an immigration lawyer. I'm based in Texas. And for the last 20 years, I have been working with immigrant families in Texas. So, I bring families together, keep them together, work on helping people get visas, green card, citizenship, and then, of course, recently have done a lot of detained work. I have a ton of clients who are in detention, and I file federal lawsuits to get them out.

• 11:53Annie Elise?

So, now that you've met Kate, if you're anything like me, you probably need the answer to one of the hard-hitting questions, which is, how the heck did she even learn to speak Carney?

• 12:03Speaker 06

I recently learned that I spoke an actual, you know, language called Carney. All I knew for 20 years is that my best friend taught me a language that her mom and her aunt used to speak. And when I was, you know, in my early 20s, she taught me this language, and we used it to, you know, talk about things that were private in public. And over the years, we've just always will revert to this language when we're on the phone and like our husbands are around there. We just had this secret language. And then it came to my attention about a year ago that there's, there's actually a Carney language, that the people who work in carnivals, I guess this is how it began, developed this language.

• 12:46Speaker 06

And it's like a, it's like a type of Pig Latin, you know, which is just as a sound before a vowel. And so I learned that I did Carney and I did a little video on finding out that I spoke Carney and really didn't think anything of it. And that video started picking up steam when this documentary came out about Mackenzie Shirilla. And so people are all of a sudden talking about Carney again because it's what she speaks with her mom in some of her jailhouse calls.

• 13:15Annie Elise?

So I wanted to pick Kate's brain a little bit about Mackenzie's call and figure out why she's choosing to use this secret language with her mom in so many of these jail calls. And here's what she had to say.

• 13:26Speaker 06

Mackenzie uses the language in her jailhouse calls is really kind of silly because the way that she uses it is to talk about people who are annoying her. She's talking about people who are, you know, in her like cell block area or she's talking, she talks about a certain guard who really annoys her. And so she's basically gossiping about people and just switching to the language. It's clear that like probably she's just in the habit of switching to the language when she's gossiping about people. Uh, she's not discussing anything about her case. She's not revealing any details. Uh, I think that would also be rather foolish because it's so easy to defice her this particular language, but I don't know.

• 14:10Speaker 06

I mean, I don't know if she had the expectation that people, that the guards would be listening to these calls, which very much may be the case. I mean, generally every jailhouse phone call is recorded and who has access to the recordings can really differ, whether it's going to be the investigators or the prosecutors or the guards, you know, all that's going to be different at every facility. Uh, and so people who are detained, unless they are on a privileged confidential call with a lawyer, which you have to schedule. differently, um, should be under notice that their calls are being recorded and could be listened to by anyone, including the people who are trying to go after them.

• 14:52Annie Elise?

So now that we have a little bit of background information, let's jump right into the calls. And I think the easiest way to do this and to follow along is for me to play the clip, and then as soon as that clip finishes, we're gonna cut back to Kate translating.

• 15:05Speaker 05

  Hey.

• 15:07Speaker 04

Hold on. Your eyes are so pretty.

• 15:13Speaker 04

  Yeah, she's pretty as fuck.

  Is that where you stand?

• 16:12Speaker 04

  Jesus.

• 16:13Speaker 05

Okay, that's what I thought. And I was talking to my buddy, and she said that's probably the, the best possible place you can be.

• 16:22Speaker 04

Hold on, um, she said I only get one call and I gotta go in my room, or I would do.

• 16:31Speaker 04

  I will, but let me finish this call, and if you give me another one, I got you. She's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a.

• 16:39Speaker 05

  Uh oh.

• 16:40Speaker 04

  She's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's a, she's

Because I don't want to blow my whole hour first thing in the morning.

• 22:07Speaker 04

I know, same. She is all these, we's already in, pleasey.

• 22:09Speaker 05

  I will, I'll follow up.

• 22:11Speaker 04

Like, right after I get off the hook, yeah.

• 22:13Speaker 05

I, I will, I will follow up. I'll have daddy go do it in person, okay?

• 22:17Speaker 04

  Alright, please do ASAP though.

• 22:17Speaker 05

Because I only have an hour to talk to you.

• 22:20Speaker 04

Alright, I love you so much, Mom. Please do ASAP. I love you, bye.

• 22:21Speaker 05

I love you too, baby. I love you. Bye-bye.

• 22:23Speaker 04

  Bye.

• 22:24Speaker 05

  Bye, I love you.

• 22:25Speaker 04

  Love you, love you.

• 22:26Speaker 05

  The caller has hung up.

• 22:27Speaker 06

I'm so mad right now. This bitch, she pisses me the fuck off.

• 22:39Speaker 06

I asked her for the form and she was like, "You are not getting one."

• 22:48Speaker 06

"You are not, you're not getting a form. I don't give a fuck."

• 22:55Speaker 06

"I don't care if your mom talked to the sheriff or what."

• 23:01Speaker 06

"You are not getting one. I'm not giving you the form."

• 23:04Annie Elise?

Here she obviously sounded a little more aggressive. Maybe she's trying to mask that she feels entitled, bratty, angry, I don't know, all of the above. But definitely seems more irritated. Let's roll into the next one.

• 23:20Speaker 05

You're weirded out by all your messages?

• 23:22Speaker 04

Yeah, well, the weird the men.

• 23:24Speaker 05

  Yeah, that's weird.

• 23:28Speaker 05

Cynthia and Ms. Kent are gonna come and visit you as soon as they, as soon as they can.

• 23:33Speaker 04

  Really?

• 23:34Speaker 05

So, they wanted me to tell you. Yep. And she said, "You tell my little sugar booga, I know she did not do what everybody is saying." She said, "I got to meet the real, I got to meet her, I know who she is."

• 23:50Speaker 04

Oh my god, you hear her like fucking gagging and throwing up? And tell, tell me Cynthia said I love her.

• 23:56Speaker 05

  Why she doing it?

• 23:57Speaker 04

She just been fucking gagging all day, stop! This bitch annoying. Did, was that you saying that? I heard you, did you hear me? She's blowing me, like imagine being in the room next to that, like. You just hear like, "Wheee", like, "Shut up!" Huh?

• 24:18Speaker 04

Been begging on the wall? Yes, I'm like, I'm like, "Shut up!" She annoying as fuck.

• 24:26Speaker 04

She, you annoying as fuck! She's like, "Weezer, freezer, weezer, weezer, weezer, either meet her, either kiss her, he's already, she's already", she's like, she's like, "Shut the fuck up bitch!"

• 24:37Speaker 05

  Oh my god.

• 24:39Speaker 04

Damn, Stacy sent me, "Hali, she, hey girl, I love you, understand, don't wanna talk, uh, I know I'm here for you to do whatever, I will always be there for you. We didn't know each other a long time, but I'm glad we did, I got the chance to know you, I know you're going through a lot, so I'll give you my number when you're ready to call me, hold on. I gotta write this shit down."

• 24:55Speaker 05

Yep. Why you not messaging me?

• 24:59Speaker 04

  Mom, I'm, I, I go in order.

• 25:01Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 25:12Speaker 04

Cause I have hella shit in my bra.

• 25:16Speaker 04

We never get searched here too, which kinda weirds me the fuck out, cause I'm used to getting searched.

• 25:21Speaker 05

  Yeah, it's kinda weird.

• 25:22Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 25:29Speaker 05

I just want Monday to come and go so we can move on, like, let's go.

• 25:34Speaker 04

  Yes, me too.

• 25:36Speaker 05

  Right.

• 25:39Speaker 04

Okay. She said, "Do you want me to send you the old letters or wait? Either way, I'll hold on to them if you want to wait. I'm very sorry for going through what you're going through. I know you're probably scared and that is normal. I was too, not knowing what was ahead for me going to do. I promise I'll be here for you. I'm glad I got to meet your family. They made me so comfortable around them.

• 25:55Speaker 05

  Oh.

• 25:55Speaker 04

More than my family does the two times I've been around them since my son passed. I'm going to text your mom later and ask her to ask your lawyer if I can write you a character letter. Ooh.

• 26:05Speaker 05

  Uh huh, uh huh.

• 26:06Speaker 04

I love and miss you, girl. Keep your head up and stay strong.

• 26:12Speaker 05

She said she's like, "American Horror Story."

• 26:15Annie Elise?

So, once again, not the kindest remarks, but not necessarily like she's trying to speak in code to cover something up or to quiet some of the information about the case, or possibly even lie about something. It's more almost as though she's trying to mask what I believe to be her true personality, which is like, "Entitled bitch" through and through. Let me play the next one.

• 26:39Speaker 04

Diamond gave me like, all her shit, like, when I left, and her deodorant and shit.

• 26:43Speaker 05

  Oh, good.

• 26:48Speaker 05

It's because you're eating. Oh, my God.

• 26:51Speaker 04

  She should've talked though.

• 26:53Speaker 05

Might have did, it could've gone up on the way home.

• 26:54Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 26:56Speaker 05

But, what else did she give you?

• 26:59Speaker 04

  What do you mean?

• 27:01Speaker 04

  Oh, hella noodles, juice.

• 27:03Speaker 05

  What, what?

• 27:05Speaker 04

Yeah, I have noodles, juice. I have like, hella come right now.

• 27:08Speaker 05

  Hell on noodles, juice?

• 27:09Speaker 04

Hella noodles. Hell, uh, a lot of noodles and juice.

• 27:13Speaker 05

Okay. I thought that was like, the name of the juice.

• 27:17Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 27:18Speaker 05

  Oh, good.

• 27:21Speaker 05

  That's good.

• 27:24Speaker 04

She's easy to be such a kid, we ask we're easy to be then, we're not easy to be, so please don't leave me.

• 27:28Speaker 05

Does she have a problem with that?

• 27:30Speaker 04

  What do you mean?

• 27:31Speaker 05

  Like, mental?

• 27:32Speaker 04

Easy, she's easy, she's her, easy, she's her, easy, she's her, easy. She's easy, she's like, she's a teasing, really teasing, freezing teasing, she's easy, she's like, easy, easy, easy, she's her, easy.

• 27:42Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 27:42Speaker 04

  She's a, she's like, she's her, easy.

• 27:44Speaker 05

  Hmm.

• 27:44Speaker 04

Easy, she's, even, I don't know, easy or maybe easy, she's like, easy out.

• 27:48Speaker 05

  Right.

• 27:50Speaker 04

She's her, she's her, easy, easy, easy, easy, easy, easy, easy, easy, easy.

• 32:07Speaker 06

Okay, this is about a girl who's walking over to her sleazyly, I think she says, she says she's off, something, she's off or something, she's like 50 or 40.

• 32:21Speaker 06

She wears me the fuck out.

• 32:26Speaker 06

Her butt is out and everything.

• 32:43Speaker 06

Every time she comes over here, she's like, and I didn't catch the last.

• 32:53Speaker 06

She thinks I'm talking about something important.

• 33:03Speaker 06

Tell me now, we're talking about, I've got you, and I'm like, no.

• 33:13Annie Elise?

So, there you heard another clip. Now again, these aren't like damning things where they were speaking in code and trying to talk about the case or dropping a bombshell relating to the case. But still, I was curious enough about this language. I know many of you have been as well. You've been DMing me, I've seen it on social media. So, because I love you guys and I'm your true crime bestie, I had to go the extra mile, get these calls translated and let you know what the heck she was saying. And if there's anything else you want me to have translated by Kate, just feel free to let me know. I thought that the jail calls were, you know, that was a good place to start. So, let me know what you think. Let me know what you think it means, if it means anything, if she was trying to mask her true personality and that's why she was speaking in code language or what.

• 33:58Annie Elise?

But, curious to know your thoughts. Alright guys, thank you so much for tuning in to another episode with me today. Until the next one, you know the drill.

• 34:13Annie Elise?

Be nice, don't kill people, and let's be done with Mackenzie Sharilla once and for all. Alright, thanks.
