This is episode number 82 with UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub.

• 0:07Lewis Howes?

Welcome to the School of Greatness. My name is Lewis Howes, a former pro athlete turned lifestyle entrepreneur. And each week, we bring you an inspiring person or message to help you discover how to unlock your inner greatness. Thanks for spending some time with me today. Now let the class begin.

• 0:33Lewis Howes?

Yo, yo, yo. What is up everyone? Thanks so much for tuning in today. I've got a new buddy on. His name is Mr. Brendan Schaub, and we got connected through a mutual friend of ours, Patrick Devaney. And I'm very excited about this interview. Probably one of the most entertaining, fun interviews I've ever done here on the School of Greatness. Just a hilarious human being. And as I was connecting with Brendan and researching about him and learning about him, I realized we had a lot in common. Within the first 20 minutes of just researching him online, I discovered 15 things that we both have in common. And more and more kept coming up as we were talking. So we dive into a lot of these things that we have in common,

• 1:13Lewis Howes?

but it's not just about that, what we have in common. It's really about the inside of the mind of Brendan Schaub and how he really became so successful in the UFC, basically learning a brand new sport after playing professional football and being a collegiate football star, and how he applied the same mindset as an athlete growing up and transitioned that into being a competitive athlete in the UFC and a competitive fighter in the UFC. And all the stuff around his story. I'm very intrigued by this guy and what he's been able to create for himself. Very interesting. So I want you guys to pay full attention and it's a lot of fun, this episode. I felt like I could have talked to him for three more hours.

• 1:55Lewis Howes?

So hopefully we'll get to have him come back on and share more about what he's up to. Now let's go ahead and dive in and let the class begin with Brendan Schaub.

• 2:10Lewis Howes?

Welcome back everyone to the School of Greatness Podcast. Super pumped today. Got a new friend on the show. His name is Mr. Brendan Schaub. What's up Brendan? What is up, man? I'm excited, man. We've got a mutual friend, Patrick Deveny, who's been telling me about you for about a year. Yeah, right? He was like, dude, my friend who used to play football, he's like crushing it in the UFC, dude. Crushing it. And I was like, sweet. Like, I want to meet him. And we finally had a chance to connect. We live close. Like a few miles, right? Yeah. You're just down in Venice? Yeah. I'm in Santa Monica for the summer. So I watched the video of yours and you were like, I'll find it and link it up in the show notes, but you're like, I'm never leaving. Never leaving. I go to the beach every day. I'm never leaving.

• 2:53Lewis Howes?

I'm never leaving, man. I just bought a place, a marina, and I am, You did? My roots are here, man. Dude, where? I'm from Denver and I am just never gonna leave LA. Dude, it's tough. The first year I moved from New York City, uh, two years ago. Yeah. The first year I hated it. I was miserable. Wow. Have you lived in New York City ever? Not a East Coast kid. Not a East Coast guy at all. The energy there is so magnetic and infectious. In New York? In New York City. I feel like it's such a hustle. It's too much. Like, I'm stressed out when I go to New York. Really? Yeah. Yeah, I feel you, man. But I loved it. I thrived off of it. And then I moved here for a girl that didn't work out. Standard. So I was like, I hate my life.

• 3:32Lewis Howes?

Hold up. So you were, you were in, so you were in New York thriving? Thriving. My life was incredible. Flourishing. My life was incredible. This girl must have been a dime piece. She is a dime piece. Really? She's a great girl. Yeah. You guys, bro, why'd you break up? It was just like, uh, it just was not working on all levels. Have you guys, you guys, you met in New York and then she moved to LA? We met in New York and she was moving to LA, basically. For to become an actress? Singer. Oh, standard. Is she, is she successful now or? She's definitely gotten a lot better, like grown and, and more successful. That means no. That means absolutely not. That means absolutely not. Nah, she's a good girl. Sorry, man. That means absolutely not. She's not. She's grown as a person, man. She's grown as a person. She's, I'm not passionate.

• 4:17Lewis Howes?

You can pick up her album on Venice Beach right now. No, she's uh, she's definitely uh, built a huge audience. I'll give her that. She's built a huge audience, come out with some new stuff and like, she hasn't made it mainstream, but she's grown.

• 4:30Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's growing.

• 4:33Speaker 01

  Remix. She needs a remix.

• 4:34Lewis Howes?

No, uh, it was actually the best thing that ever happened to me because I thought I was like the man, like emotionally. I thought I was like grounded and could like take on any challenge. And then this happened and it rocked my world.

• 4:49Speaker 01

Love, love would kick you in the ass, my man.

• 4:51Lewis Howes?

I had no clue how to handle it. I just had no clue.

• 4:54Speaker 01

You guys dated for how long?

• 4:55Lewis Howes?

About a year, but it was like an intense.

• 4:58Speaker 01

It was on. You thought she was the one?

• 5:00Lewis Howes?

It was just on from day one. And it was the most explosive, passionate connection I've ever experienced.

• 5:06Speaker 01

There's nothing like love, man. There's nothing like it on this world. Nothing.

• 5:10Lewis Howes?

And that drove me to move 3000 miles across the country.

• 5:14Speaker 01

But I believe things happen for a reason. I really do.

• 5:16Lewis Howes?

  It did.

• 5:17Speaker 01

Cause look at you now, right?

• 5:18Lewis Howes?

It was the best thing, best experience, best lesson. I'm super grateful for her. Uh, and I love her for that. So very blessed. It just was a mess.

• 5:26Speaker 01

Yeah. Now you, now you're both doing good. Do you still talk?

• 5:29Lewis Howes?

  Uh, every now and then.

• 5:30Speaker 01

It's probably better you don't. I don't think guys and girls can be friends.

• 5:33Lewis Howes?

It's, we tried to for a while and it just didn't work for a while. It, it worked and then it, there were some kind of a connection happening on, on certain.

• 5:40Speaker 01

  Bad idea, man.

• 5:41Lewis Howes?

  It's just like, yeah, let's.

• 5:42Speaker 01

Yeah. You're never gonna move on. Yeah.

• 5:44Lewis Howes?

But um, so the worst year of my life, maybe not the worst, but a really miserable year being in LA. And then all of a sudden I started to kind of evolve and grow. And then it was like amazing. I love LA now. I love LA now.

• 5:57Speaker 01

  Yeah. The best.

• 5:58Lewis Howes?

And uh, Santa Monica is pretty sweet.

• 6:00Speaker 01

You're in a good location. Close to the beach, walking distance to Main Street.

• 6:04Lewis Howes?

It's pretty sweet, man. I love it. I'm, I'm pumped to be here, but um, this isn't about me, my life. It's about your life. So I uh, so we connected through a buddy of ours who used to play football with Brendan, uh, that I'm friends with, been friends with for about a year and a half now. And. I was doing research on you.

• 6:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:24Lewis Howes?

  Online, watching some videos.

• 6:25Speaker 01

  Believe everything you see.

• 6:26Lewis Howes?

  That's why I'm like, let's.

• 6:27Speaker 01

  Believe everything.

• 6:28Lewis Howes?

So I want to confirm. So I found 15 fun, common facts about Louis and Brendan Schaub.

• 6:36Lewis Howes?

  So fact number.

• 6:37Speaker 01

Is this true or false? Am I saying?

• 6:39Lewis Howes?

You can say true or false. Yeah. So, uh, fact number one, we both were all state in football in high school.

• 6:45Speaker 01

  True.

• 6:46Lewis Howes?

Okay, there's true. I was a receiver for two years, all state.

• 6:50Speaker 01

I was a tight end and, and then I was also all state in lacrosse as well.

• 6:54Lewis Howes?

I was all state in track.

• 6:55Speaker 01

Oh, snaps. Look at us. Look at us.

• 6:59Lewis Howes?

Okay, fact number two, we both played division three football.

• 7:03Speaker 01

  Correct.

• 7:03Lewis Howes?

  Whittier.

• 7:04Speaker 01

  Whittier College, yeah.

• 7:05Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 7:06Speaker 01

Poets, worst name, worst name in sports.

• 7:11Speaker 01

  Fighting poets.

• 7:12Lewis Howes?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 7:12Speaker 01

Shout out to the Whittier Fighting Poets. But I did finish my career as a Buffalo, University of Colorado Buffalo.

• 7:19Lewis Howes?

Yeah, yeah, that's pretty cool. That's interesting because I always wanted to transfer to Ohio State. I was good at transfer my, I was good at transfer my, thanks for rubbing it in. Well, I'll tell you why I'm glad I didn't. I was good at transfer my senior year. But I was just like, because I talked to them, they're like, yeah, you can come walk on, but there's no guarantee because it's like, we kind of have our guys.

• 7:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:41Lewis Howes?

And, uh, my class, they had like six first round draft picks. They had San Antonio Holmes and a couple of their big receivers that year. And I was just like, I may be like a special teams guy.

• 7:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 7:50Lewis Howes?

And it was seemed amazing. I always wanted to play there, but I, uh, I got to be a two sport All-American in college because I got to play track and football. And I wouldn't have had that.

• 7:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's, it's, it's.

• 8:00Lewis Howes?

  It's a different life.

• 8:01Speaker 01

Tough, man. It's tough because, uh, division one sports, you're married to.

• 8:05Lewis Howes?

  You got to.

• 8:06Speaker 01

College football. You gotta dedicate your entire, and really academics take a backseat. Let's be honest here. Like I went to University of Colorado, I majored in football, I minored in sociology and business. You know what I'm saying? So, um. When I was at Whittier, yeah, football, lacrosse, lacrosse team was a powerhouse, division three powerhouse. We were very good and I could have stayed there, probably done, you know, well at both of them. I thought I could have went pro from there in lacrosse or football. But my dream was to play division one and I knew if I didn't take that risk, that I would regret it for the rest of my life. Colorado said the same thing, man, we, we don't know, it's tough, but as, as just a little bit of, I mean, we'll take you on, you might have a chance. I was like, perfect. I'm better than I guarantee anyone you got.

• 8:49Speaker 01

Cause I believe in myself more than anyone, man. And it's, and people are like, oh, that's cocky. It's not. I just have, yeah, I have a dream and I went for it and at least, at least I'm not sitting here saying, I'm not saying you are, but at least I'm not sitting there saying, I wish I would transfer to University of Colorado. I did, it worked out great, man.

• 9:05Lewis Howes?

Yeah, yeah. I, uh, I don't regret not transferring because I was like, I got to do some incredible things. And I still went on the, which my dream was to play pro football and I did that.

• 9:14Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 9:15Lewis Howes?

I didn't care as much about D1. It was like, if I'm a pro, that's my dream.

• 9:18Speaker 01

Yeah. So. I bet you got a better education.

• 9:21Lewis Howes?

Better education. I learned a lot more. I think I wouldn't be here right now if I went to Ohio State. I think I would have relied kind of on that big school, like my friends were like doing the NFL thing.

• 9:31Speaker 01

Yeah. It's a different animal, man. It's a different animal. At the same time too, the level of competition I got at University of Colorado and every day my job's on the line because when you have a five star recruit, he can make 10 mistakes in a practice and it's all good.

• 9:45Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 9:45Speaker 01

They're freaking holding his hand and everything's all good. Brendan Schaub, the white, the white running back makes a mistake. They're like, uh, go ahead and hit the showers, bud. So my, my room for error, there, there was none. So just having that pressure every day in that level of competition, I wouldn't be here now if it wasn't for that. And getting treated like, I don't, can you cuss on this podcast?

• 10:05Lewis Howes?

  Uh, sure. Go ahead.

• 10:05Speaker 01

Sorry, man. Getting treated like pure shit, day in and day out and having this chip on your shoulder. That's why I'm here now.

• 10:13Lewis Howes?

Yeah, that's great. I felt that way in arena football. I don't know if you experienced this when you were playing, which is another fact of ours, another, another joint fact, uh, is that every day, every week, they were bringing in like five new receivers to practice.

• 10:27Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 10:27Lewis Howes?

And they're picking guys. Up and cutting guys, there's no guarantee.

• 10:30Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 10:30Lewis Howes?

And so I was just like stressed out every week, you know, it's like.

• 10:32Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 10:33Lewis Howes?

You gotta be on no matter what.

• 10:34Speaker 01

You gotta be on. Well, think about it in my life now as a professional fighter in the UFC heavyweight division. They're signing monsters left and right. There's some monster right now while I'm doing this podcast. It's fricking hitting mitts and getting ready to rip my head off.

• 10:46Lewis Howes?

Pounding in his face right now, like bring it.

• 10:48Speaker 01

Yeah, like can't wait to whip Brendan Schaub's ass.

• 10:51Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 10:51Speaker 01

That's what you gotta deal with. So I wake up with a sense of fear every single day.

• 10:54Lewis Howes?

This guy's a joker doing podcasts.

• 10:56Speaker 01

Yeah, man. Yeah. For, yeah, for real. That's how it is. Yeah.

• 10:59Lewis Howes?

Crazy, man. Okay. Fact number three was we both transferred colleges. But Brendan transferred to a D1 school. I didn't. I transferred down from D2 to D3.

• 11:09Speaker 01

  I took a chance.

• 11:11Lewis Howes?

Uh, fact number four, we both played arena football and you played with the Utah Blaze, right?

• 11:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:16Lewis Howes?

I played with the Columbus Destroyers.

• 11:18Speaker 01

  Oh, nice.

• 11:18Lewis Howes?

And then I played arena two for a season and broke my wrist and got an.

• 11:22Speaker 01

  That's a bad injury.

• 11:23Lewis Howes?

It sucked. I was on a full arm cast for six months.

• 11:25Speaker 01

  Damn.

• 11:26Lewis Howes?

It's miserable, dude. This is, it gets even interesting now.

• 11:30Speaker 01

  Let's hear this.

• 11:31Lewis Howes?

  Tip number five.

• 11:32Speaker 01

Are you gonna say some girl's name? We both slept with Mary Ann. Uh, damn, bro.

• 11:37Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 11:38Speaker 01

  That's a little too much.

• 11:39Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 11:39Speaker 01

  Sorry.

• 11:41Lewis Howes?

Number five, we both practiced with the Buffalo Bills.

• 11:45Speaker 01

Oh, really? You went out there?

• 11:47Lewis Howes?

  I went out there.

• 11:48Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 11:48Lewis Howes?

Did like a two, two day practice in the stadium.

• 11:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:52Lewis Howes?

Yeah, I didn't get picked up, but I think you were with the team.

• 11:54Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Training camp and, uh.

• 11:57Lewis Howes?

  That's good.

• 11:58Speaker 01

Yeah, it was all right, man. It's a, it's a reality check on how.

• 12:02Lewis Howes?

  So next level.

• 12:03Speaker 01

It's next level, but just, um, pro sports are, are so vicious. Have you ever seen a lion attack a gazelle and you're just like, damn, man, that was so intense.

• 12:15Lewis Howes?

  Every day.

• 12:15Speaker 01

That's how it was every day. It's just like.

• 12:18Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 12:19Speaker 01

It's, uh, it's, it's the survival of the fittest and, um, it is so ruthless. And you know what's even more ruthless than the NFL? The UFC.

• 12:29Lewis Howes?

  I can only imagine.

• 12:30Speaker 01

To, to the 10th degree because if I'm a quarterback in the NFL. And I throw three interceptions, we lose the game. Sweet, man. I have next Sunday to erase all that. If you, if, let's say, uh, the UFC books you as the main event on Fox and you have a snooze fest of a fight where it's not, it's not always in your control. It's matchup, it's styles, things happen. Maybe you have an injury, who knows? But the fight doesn't go well and the viewership is down because of that, even if you win, you're in trouble, my man.

• 13:01Lewis Howes?

You may not get a good fight for a couple of years, right?

• 13:03Speaker 01

Yeah, at least that next matchup, you're gonna be in the doghouse.

• 13:07Lewis Howes?

It's almost like you gotta knock someone out, you gotta do something crazy.

• 13:10Speaker 01

Has to be entertaining. They, they would rather you lose being entertaining than win being boring.

• 13:14Lewis Howes?

Because then they know when you're back on, it's gonna be entertaining again.

• 13:17Speaker 01

Yeah, people are tuning in for that. And so you gotta remember it, in any professional sport, it's entertainment. It really is. It comes down to entertainment. There's a reason why the Denver Broncos was the most watched team last year. All they do is pass the frickin' ball nonstop. That's what people want to see. Yeah, man. There's a reason why LeBron James and the Heat were the number one watched team. All they do is throw alley-oops to each other left and right. In the UFC, there's a reason a guy, uh, you know, Kane Velasquez isn't the most watched heavyweight. There's other guys that are because they're gonna sit and trade and take chances.

• 13:47Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 13:47Speaker 01

  It's a beast of a sport, man.

• 13:49Lewis Howes?

Wow, yeah, I mean, I was like, at one moment in my life, I was like, yeah, I could do the UFC. Like, years ago. And then I was like, man, I just don't wanna get hit in the face that hard.

• 13:57Speaker 01

Right? Me neither, man. Me neither. Well.

• 13:59Lewis Howes?

I don't know how you do it, man.

• 14:00Speaker 01

Well, people think it's a misconception. People think because I'm a UFC fighter, like I'm this aggressive, like gnarly dude. Not in the least bit. Not at all.

• 14:09Lewis Howes?

  You seem pretty chill.

• 14:10Speaker 01

Super chill, man. My demeanor, super chill. Never been in a street fight. Definitely more of a lover than a fighter. I just happen to be good at fighting.

• 14:16Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 14:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's weird.

• 14:17Lewis Howes?

You got a little cut in your eye. Is that from a previous fight or working out?

• 14:20Speaker 01

This was from my fight against Andrej Lasky and then I was working out on Monday and someone frickin' hit me again and kinda reopened a little bit.

• 14:28Lewis Howes?

I hear, I, I've heard fighters say, I don't follow the UFC that much, but I watch every now and then like highlights and like just listen. But I've heard some fighters say that you almost get injured as much in practice.

• 14:38Speaker 01

Oh, more so in practice. For sure. Ah, it depends. At heavyweight, it's different. Heavyweight, you're talking about 265. Pound dudes with basically nothing on. You have a four ounce glove on. If they hit you with a jab, your face can get jacked up and I'm a bruiser. So like my, like my last fight, I destroyed the guy. He didn't, I mean, if you look at the hit copy strike numbers, I landed, you know, three times as many shots, but my face was jacked.

• 15:01Lewis Howes?

All it takes is a couple.

• 15:02Speaker 01

Just, uh, just a cut, man. Look, I'm a bit of a cutter. It's not cool. It's not cool.

• 15:07Lewis Howes?

I think I saw one with your head was split up. Oh, yeah. Just blood is all over the dude.

• 15:11Speaker 01

Just getting uglier, man. My ears, my ears are not cool. Especially in LA, girls are like, first of all, in LA.

• 15:18Lewis Howes?

  Like, what do you wrestle?

• 15:18Speaker 01

Most of the guys are about five, eight hundred seventy pounds. I come in, I got a busted up face. I mean, I'll try putting on the skinny jeans just to fit in more, but I stick out more. You know what I'm saying? It's a beast, man.

• 15:31Lewis Howes?

Yeah, that's funny. Okay. Number six, we're, we were, we were both guests on a TV show.

• 15:39Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah?

• 15:40Lewis Howes?

Well, it said you were on a travel show, channel show, Ghost Adventures.

• 15:43Speaker 01

I've been on Ghost Adventures, uh, Chelsea Lately and Mythbusters.

• 15:47Lewis Howes?

Sure. Okay. I was on a, a Bravo show called Misadvised.

• 15:51Speaker 01

  What's that about?

• 15:53Lewis Howes?

It was out for one season and they canceled it. It was about three female relationship experts who were all single. They, they gave advice, but couldn't take their own advice called Misadvised.

• 16:05Speaker 01

And what were you doing on there?

• 16:06Lewis Howes?

One of my friends was like the stars, Julia Allison, and she asked me to come on one night to just like, uh, be her friend out of the, out of like an event, not a date, but just like her friend. And these other two girls were there as well, uh, who were the experts on the show. And she ends up right away, like trying to set me up on a date with one of them. And I was like, I don't really want to.

• 16:29Speaker 01

  It's pretty awkward.

• 16:30Lewis Howes?

But she was like, you should go on a date with this girl. Cameras on my face. You should ask her out on a date. Do it, do it, do it. And I was just like, uh, and then she come, I didn't ask her anything. The girl comes up to me later goes, so you gotta ask for my number or what? And I was like, uh, sure, yeah.

• 16:44Speaker 01

Was she attractive or no? Not your style, obviously.

• 16:47Lewis Howes?

Not my style, not my style. And kinda just weird.

• 16:50Speaker 01

That's awkward as hell. And the producers are like- I'd kinda be mad at your friend.

• 16:53Lewis Howes?

Yeah, I kinda was. But the producers were like, will you ask her out, please? Like, we want you to ask her out, you're great on camera, blah, blah, blah. And so for like a month, my like media coach was like, I don't think you should. Like, this is probably not gonna be like that great of exposure for you, for your business. It's like a Bravo reality show.

• 17:09Speaker 01

  It's kinda cheesy, right?

• 17:10Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 17:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:11Lewis Howes?

I ended up doing it and um, it was one of-

• 17:14Speaker 01

I decided to go ahead and go on with it. He advised me not to, I decided to do it myself.

• 17:20Lewis Howes?

It was uh, it was definitely interesting, a lot of stress. Because they wanted me to like take her on these dates and I didn't like her.

• 17:25Speaker 01

Forget that, bro. Oh, heck no.

• 17:28Lewis Howes?

And then they tried to like, this was the messed up part about TV, which I realize, at least about this network, is they tried to like blackmail me. They were like, if you don't do this, then we're gonna make you look how we want to.

• 17:38Speaker 01

  Really?

• 17:38Lewis Howes?

  I was like,

• 17:39Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 17:40Lewis Howes?

So it kinda had to be like a little puppet for a bit.

• 17:41Speaker 01

I would've been out, man. Like, screw your guys' show, I'm not gonna finish this.

• 17:45Lewis Howes?

  It sucked.

• 17:45Speaker 01

Tell you what, though, I could use the advice of those relationship experts.

• 17:48Lewis Howes?

Yeah, you looking for a lady?

• 17:49Speaker 01

Uh, no, I wouldn't say that, but there's a common theme with uh-

• 17:54Lewis Howes?

The ladies you do, you do date.

• 17:56Speaker 01

The girls I've dated where that they just say, you're the most selfish person I've ever met in my life. And you know what, in um,

• 18:04Lewis Howes?

  At least you're honest.

• 18:05Speaker 01

This is professional sports, man. You gotta be selfish. And it's-

• 18:10Lewis Howes?

But women are not professional sports.

• 18:11Speaker 01

They're not, they're not. You gotta be able to turn it off and I can't. I can't.

• 18:15Lewis Howes?

So what is it you do with them?

• 18:18Speaker 01

Everything just revolves around my career.

• 18:20Lewis Howes?

You're like, I gotta practice, I gotta do this, I gotta train, I'm gone.

• 18:23Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 18:23Lewis Howes?

I can't go to this wedding date.

• 18:24Speaker 01

Exactly. They're like, oh, let's uh, let's go have dinner with my family. Nope, can't. Training.

• 18:30Lewis Howes?

So they just don't feel like you care?

• 18:33Speaker 01

  I don't know if it's care, but it's like they're they're they're not the priority. God, it's a beast.

• 18:37Lewis Howes?

You gotta show a little bit of effort.

• 18:39Speaker 01

  A little something. I know.

• 18:40Lewis Howes?

  I mean.

• 18:41Speaker 01

  I know, man.

• 18:42Lewis Howes?

You can't just expect me to give you the world and you be like, ah, you could have a little piece of sand.

• 18:45Speaker 01

That this, but and then I've also.

• 18:47Lewis Howes?

  Sand from the beach.

• 18:48Speaker 01

I know, man. I've also dated an alpha. So when you got two alphas together.

• 18:52Lewis Howes?

  What was that like?

• 18:53Speaker 01

It's trouble. It's trouble, man, because you're an alpha for a reason. I, you know, I say I'm kind of a hybrid alpha where I'm.

• 19:00Lewis Howes?

  Alpha lover.

• 19:01Speaker 01

Alpha lover, but I'm also not like, I'm not controlling.

• 19:05Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 19:06Speaker 01

But as a professional athlete, you're gonna have a little bit of an ego. If you're dating another person who has an ego too, you're gonna clash a little bit. You're gonna compete no matter what.

• 19:15Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 19:15Speaker 01

You just are. It's just natural.

• 19:17Lewis Howes?

You can't go into a ring or the octagon and be like, uh, and have no ego. You have to be like, I'm the fucking greatest in the world.

• 19:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, you have to.

• 19:24Lewis Howes?

  In order to win.

• 19:25Speaker 01

  You have to.

• 19:26Lewis Howes?

  It's your life.

• 19:26Speaker 01

It's your life and you're gonna get hurt if you don't believe that.

• 19:28Lewis Howes?

You don't. Yeah. One second, you get knocked out, right?

• 19:31Speaker 01

So, but as far as the personal life go, it's it's tough. And then and then you gotta talk about, then then you got options. It's a curse.

• 19:38Lewis Howes?

  This is.

• 19:39Speaker 01

  It's a curse.

• 19:39Lewis Howes?

The biggest challenge of my life.

• 19:41Speaker 01

Options, man. Options is not a good thing.

• 19:43Lewis Howes?

  And aggressive options.

• 19:45Speaker 01

Uh, aggressive and very attractive options.

• 19:48Lewis Howes?

  Oh, yes.

• 19:48Speaker 01

I mean, you know what I'm saying? It's like, dang, man, like, don't get me wrong. I love Ferraris, but if I drive a Ferrari every single day, that's gonna be just the normal everyday Ferrari.

• 19:58Lewis Howes?

  This is.

• 19:58Speaker 01

A Bentley goes by, I'm like, well, Bentley's pretty cool. I'm gonna check out the Bentley. You know what I'm saying?

• 20:03Lewis Howes?

This is my curse right now, too. I just started dating someone exclusively. I can't believe I haven't said that on my own podcast. But I'm accepting it and moving into that role. And I told her, I was like, listen, I don't know if I can be with one woman for the rest of my life. Like, I just don't know.

• 20:20Speaker 01

She brought up, was like, I think we should be exclusive.

• 20:22Lewis Howes?

We were dating for, yeah, the last like four months, not exclusively.

• 20:26Speaker 01

How often do you hang out?

• 20:28Lewis Howes?

Mostly, mostly on the weekends, probably three, two, three times a week.

• 20:31Speaker 01

  Okay, that's not crazy.

• 20:32Lewis Howes?

She's busy, she's like driven, focused, she's gonna be getting her doctor in physical therapy in the year, last, this year. And is working all day, then working all night. So it's like.

• 20:42Speaker 01

  See, that's sexy though.

• 20:43Lewis Howes?

It, she doesn't have time for me.

• 20:45Speaker 01

  That drive is super sexy.

• 20:46Lewis Howes?

She doesn't have time for me and she's focused and I'm like, yes.

• 20:48Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 20:49Lewis Howes?

  It's hot.

• 20:50Speaker 01

Can't wait to see her, right?

• 20:51Lewis Howes?

  It's hot, dude.

• 20:52Speaker 01

It's super hot. I dig a girl with passion and drive.

• 20:55Lewis Howes?

And here's the thing, I told her, I was like, I don't know if I can be with one woman for the rest of my life and it scares me. Like it's really a fear. And I don't know if I'm, I wanna be accepted for at least having that fear.

• 21:03Speaker 01

  And what'd she say?

• 21:05Lewis Howes?

She was like, well, that's something to think about.

• 21:08Speaker 01

She's like, that's something to think about. Think about me messing with other dudes and then tell me how you feel.

• 21:13Lewis Howes?

  Which doesn't feel good.

• 21:14Speaker 01

No, man. Cause you think you have options.

• 21:16Lewis Howes?

Of course, she's getting hit on left and right. She's like the sexiest little thing there is.

• 21:19Speaker 01

Left and right, my man. Like you're a good looking dude, like.

• 21:22Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, thank you.

• 21:23Speaker 01

Um, like I told you this right when I met you, like, you ever met Luke Rockhold? He's the dime piece of the UFC. He's just a smoke show of the UFC. Good looking dude. You look like him, man.

• 21:31Lewis Howes?

  That's good to know.

• 21:32Speaker 01

Yeah, man. So, uh, even though you're an attractive dude and you have options.

• 21:36Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, she's got options.

• 21:37Speaker 01

An average girl who's a five that might have, might have, you know, pretty eyes or a, you know, a good bust or a butt or something like that. Her options are 10 times yours. Listen, if, if you and I, I mean, granted, yeah, maybe you and I go out in LA on a Friday night and we're like, dude, let's go get some chicks, bring them back home. Our chances are pretty good.

• 21:58Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 21:58Speaker 01

Pretty good, cause you know, two, couple cuties, couple cutie pies, but, but if two average girls goes, man, we're gonna go out tonight and we're gonna bring some dudes home, it's a guarantee 100% it's happening. That's the difference. So when she says, let's be exclusive, I, I, I deal with the same struggle, man. It's, it's a beast. I feel, I feel like I'm Bruce Wayne and I have this curse where it's, and the curse is options. And the rest of the girls out there are bane and it is trouble, man.

• 22:28Lewis Howes?

I know. I don't know what to do. I don't know, I don't know if I'm, you know how some guys' issues are?

• 22:33Speaker 01

  Drugs, alcohol.

• 22:36Speaker 01

And you know, they buy expensive stuff, food, any of that stuff.

• 22:40Lewis Howes?

  Cars.

• 22:40Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't have that. Yeah, I like nice things. I have nice stuff, but it's it for me, it's women. My, my, I don't say downfall, but my curse or my addiction is women.

• 22:50Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 22:51Speaker 01

I sound like fucking Michael Jordan right now, but it's not that bad. I have a, you know, I've been in serious, very serious relationships and I've done very well, but at the same time, coming to LA, um, having a little bit of fame. It's a different animal.

• 23:03Lewis Howes?

  Man.

• 23:03Speaker 01

It's a different monster. I, I look at, I look at two people like, uh, I went out last night, uh, for dinner and I saw these two people and just two average people. The dude was not in, I'll put it nicely, not in shape and his girl was just average. And they were holding hands on the same side of the booth. And I was like, damn.

• 23:21Lewis Howes?

  In love, huh?

• 23:22Speaker 01

  I, I, I, I think I would trade spots with that guy.

• 23:24Lewis Howes?

  See, that's.

• 23:24Speaker 01

Cause I don't know if I'm ever gonna get there. I honestly don't know.

• 23:27Lewis Howes?

That is what I'm most afraid of, that I'm never gonna have that.

• 23:29Speaker 01

  I know. It's scary.

• 23:30Lewis Howes?

And it's like, here's the thing, if I'm gonna be honest with you and be honest with the world.

• 23:34Speaker 01

  Please do.

• 23:35Lewis Howes?

Be honest with the world. Like I've been on, you know, stints where there's like four or five girls I'm dating at a time or it's just, you know, hanging out with and you know, whatever.

• 23:42Speaker 01

  Call it the roster.

• 23:43Lewis Howes?

Yeah, right. And it's never been rewarding after a certain time.

• 23:48Speaker 01

  It's not rewarding.

• 23:49Lewis Howes?

  It's like.

• 23:50Speaker 01

It's rewarding for, while it's physical.

• 23:53Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 23:53Speaker 01

  Yes, that's it.

• 23:54Lewis Howes?

It's rewarding for like those, uh, couple hours or whatever it is.

• 23:57Speaker 01

Is it a couple hours? Like I guess if you're fricking Don Juan, it's great, but for me, it's maybe 30 minutes.

• 24:02Lewis Howes?

  Build up to it.

• 24:03Speaker 01

  What are we doing?

• 24:04Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 24:05Speaker 01

What you want, what you, what you should be searching for is your best friend.

• 24:09Lewis Howes?

  Yes.

• 24:09Speaker 01

Who just happened to be physically attractive to us because the sexual parts of a very small window of it, man. But that's what got, that's what drives guys.

• 24:17Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 24:18Speaker 01

  What are we gonna do?

• 24:19Lewis Howes?

The cool thing about this, uh.

• 24:20Speaker 01

  We're all screwed.

• 24:21Lewis Howes?

The cool thing about the girl that I'm, I can't, it's hard for me to say committed to like girlfriend. It's hard to say that.

• 24:27Speaker 01

  Admit it's the first.

• 24:28Lewis Howes?

Cause it just happened recently. So it's like.

• 24:30Speaker 01

It's like alcohol anonymous. Admit you have a problem is the first step. You have a girlfriend.

• 24:34Lewis Howes?

Oh man, it's hard to say though.

• 24:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 24:36Lewis Howes?

It's hard to say, but no, she's great. So, uh, the, the thing that's cool. The thing that's cool that I really like about her is like, we play a lot. Like she does, she's a former gymnast. So we do this acro yoga. I don't know if you've seen my Instagram or anything, but I'll have to show it to you. We basically, I basically throw her up and like do all these crazy tricks in the air. Like this acro gymnastics stuff that I've been learning with her over the last four months. She's been teaching me.

• 24:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:00Lewis Howes?

And it's like we get, and she works out like a beast. She works out as hard as me, if not harder.

• 25:04Speaker 01

  Super attractive.

• 25:04Lewis Howes?

Like we did an ab workout together and I couldn't keep up with her.

• 25:07Speaker 01

  Dang.

• 25:08Lewis Howes?

  Six pack like.

• 25:09Speaker 01

  How old is she?

• 25:10Lewis Howes?

  Twenty six.

• 25:11Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 25:12Lewis Howes?

And one, another fact of ours is that we're both thirty one years old.

• 25:14Speaker 01

  Yes, sir. Yeah.

• 25:17Lewis Howes?

I'm trying to put in the facts as we're talking.

• 25:19Speaker 01

Get to this fifteen, top fifteen. I don't know if you're gonna make it through it, man.

• 25:22Lewis Howes?

Yeah, so it's like, uh, here's the thing, to go back to this, the roster never works out. It's fun and it's fun to talk about and it's fun to be like, this is what I'm up to with your boys or whatever, but then it's like, it's, is it really fun?

• 25:35Speaker 01

I, is it fun? Cause the, the most people, the guys I know are the biggest players are the most, they're the, you're searching for something, you're trying to fill a void.

• 25:43Lewis Howes?

And that's why you have so.

• 25:44Speaker 01

It's basically like, no one wants to meet the fifty year old guy who's still renting the, the place. You know what I'm saying? You want, you don't trust a guy who's renting all the damn time or is leasing a car all the time. Trust a guy who's buying, right?

• 25:55Lewis Howes?

  He's committed.

• 25:56Speaker 01

Yes, if he's committed to a car, to a condo, trust that guy.

• 26:00Lewis Howes?

  Sure.

• 26:00Speaker 01

You don't want to be that fifty year old renting man. I saw a thing on Twitter, it's dope. It said, um, sixty four years of marriage, they died four hours apart. One died, the other died four hours and shows two old hands in the bed next to each other holding hands. Damn, man, what are we doing? Cause it's gonna show me. It's just gonna be like, my tatted up arm, just alone.

• 26:21Lewis Howes?

  Reaching for someone.

• 26:22Speaker 01

Cats in the room, like reaching for someone. It's just super sad and like UFC replays behind me.

• 26:28Lewis Howes?

Oh, man. So what would be the ultimate woman for you? What does she like? What does she do? What does she, how does she make you feel?

• 26:38Speaker 01

Believe me, if I, if I knew, we'd be.

• 26:40Lewis Howes?

Have any, if you could imagine.

• 26:41Speaker 01

And maybe I've already met her. Maybe, maybe, maybe I've met her, you know?

• 26:45Lewis Howes?

Maybe the right timing or something.

• 26:46Speaker 01

I don't know what it is. I'm, I'm tough to deal with. I'm a monster to deal with is when it comes to that stuff.

• 26:51Lewis Howes?

  If you say so, though.

• 26:52Speaker 01

But apparently, there's only one common denominator here and it's

• 26:56Lewis Howes?

  It's you.

• 26:56Speaker 01

  It's Brendan Jobs.

• 26:58Lewis Howes?

  So what?

• 26:58Speaker 01

These other girls, I'm just like, there's no way all these girls are wrong. Maybe they are. I don't know.

• 27:03Lewis Howes?

Well, there's definitely some like introspection, something to look at inside and be like, okay, what? What has been the breakdown in each relationship? Why is each relationship, is there a common theme besides myself that I've done?

• 27:15Speaker 01

No, it's just me. It's just me and being selfish.

• 27:17Lewis Howes?

  There you go.

• 27:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:18Lewis Howes?

You probably know a lot of the answers, at least trying the next time is like, okay, be more unselfish.

• 27:22Speaker 01

  See, I don't, I, I, but I don't know if

• 27:24Lewis Howes?

You don't want to sacrifice your career.

• 27:26Speaker 01

You have to have this mentality, I feel like, to be the best.

• 27:29Lewis Howes?

  Some

• 27:29Speaker 01

  In, in, in professional sports.

• 27:31Lewis Howes?

So what if a woman accepted you for your selfishness? Would you be, would you be like, this is amazing? And would you be able to give a little more?

• 27:38Speaker 01

I think so. I like to think so.

• 27:40Lewis Howes?

It's kind of like if she accepted that she wasn't going to get much time.

• 27:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:43Lewis Howes?

What if, or what if she didn't have much time for you?

• 27:46Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 27:47Lewis Howes?

Because one of my challenges has been

• 27:49Speaker 01

Don't, don't leave me alone. Do not leave me alone. I hate being lonely and especially when we have options.

• 27:54Lewis Howes?

  That's my

• 27:54Speaker 01

  Do not leave me alone.

• 27:56Lewis Howes?

Here's the thing, though. One of my challenges has always been, um, with women is that they want to hang out with me so much. Like, they like me that much. They're like, you're my future husband. I want to And it's like

• 28:07Speaker 01

  You're a unicorn. You're the unicorn.

• 28:08Lewis Howes?

And they're like, I'm like, give me something to like, go after.

• 28:11Speaker 01

  I, I agree.

• 28:12Lewis Howes?

And this girl I'm with now, she like

• 28:15Speaker 01

  Shouldn't have talked to you.

• 28:15Lewis Howes?

Doesn't have time. And I'm like, what? You're the only girl in the world that doesn't want to hang out with me 24/7.

• 28:20Speaker 01

That's dope. Cause I dated a girl who really no drive, just wanted to be a mom.

• 28:25Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 28:25Speaker 01

Frickin' smoke show. The hottest girl I've ever dated.

• 28:28Lewis Howes?

But the boss boy thing after two weeks.

• 28:30Speaker 01

I was like, don't you have something to do? Or like, I'd go to practice. I'm gone for six, seven hours.

• 28:35Lewis Howes?

She wants to be there and watch you.

• 28:36Speaker 01

Yeah. She's, no, she's about, still chilling at home. Just chilling, nothing.

• 28:39Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 28:40Speaker 01

  Just cool chilling.

• 28:41Lewis Howes?

Not attractive for driven guys, I think. Unless you just want a housewife that's like going to take care of your kids and be at home all day, but

• 28:46Speaker 01

You need a, you need a partner in crime. You need a partner in crime. You need a best friend.

• 28:50Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 28:52Speaker 01

  Yeah, man.

• 28:52Lewis Howes?

  It's a

• 28:53Speaker 01

So, so we could talk about this.

• 28:54Lewis Howes?

So tell me, tell me what the ideal one would be. If you could have any woman, what would she be like?

• 28:59Speaker 01

  I have no idea.

• 29:00Lewis Howes?

  No idea.

• 29:00Speaker 01

If, if I knew, we'd be, we'd be in a good direction.

• 29:03Lewis Howes?

Well, I think if you created that vision for yourself first.

• 29:05Speaker 01

  You think?

• 29:06Lewis Howes?

I think if you, if, think if you put it out there like, okay, here's what I think I want at least.

• 29:09Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 29:10Lewis Howes?

And you started looking for it.

• 29:11Speaker 01

I don't know if I agree with that. I think, I think if you're, if you're looking too hard for it, you, love doesn't work like that. If, if you, if you have this picture in your head of what the ideal woman looks like, or if you have this picture in the head, how your career is going to turn out, because it's, I'm telling you, it's not going to, it's not going to, especially in the UFC or professional sports. The way you think it's going to happen, it's not going to go down.

• 29:31Lewis Howes?

But you can have a vision for what you want to happen. You can say, my dream is to be the UFC ultimate champion.

• 29:36Speaker 01

  Yes, exactly.

• 29:37Lewis Howes?

  It may not happen.

• 29:38Speaker 01

  But that's the goal.

• 29:39Lewis Howes?

So your dream for a dream woman?

• 29:41Speaker 01

Obviously, my dream would be best friend, married, kids.

• 29:43Lewis Howes?

  There you go.

• 29:44Speaker 01

  I love kids.

• 29:44Lewis Howes?

  Okay, cool.

• 29:45Speaker 01

  That's a standard, though, right?

• 29:46Lewis Howes?

  No.

• 29:47Speaker 01

I don't want to be 50 with a Tommy Bahama shirt on, tight ass khakis.

• 29:51Lewis Howes?

When do you want it by and like, what type of?

• 29:53Speaker 01

  No idea.

• 29:53Lewis Howes?

How does it make you feel?

• 29:54Speaker 01

See, I'm, I'm not going to put timing on it. You can't.

• 29:56Lewis Howes?

  It's tough. What if you're 50, though?

• 29:59Speaker 01

Well, then we're going to have to go to Russia, mail order bride.

• 30:03Lewis Howes?

What would you say at least by 50, you'd like to have your partner in crime?

• 30:06Speaker 01

  50? Damn.

• 30:07Lewis Howes?

  What I'm saying?

• 30:07Speaker 01

I'm 31. I would say, damn, hopefully in the next three years.

• 30:11Lewis Howes?

Okay, well, that's what I'm saying.

• 30:12Speaker 01

Yeah. At least while we're both in shape and

• 30:15Lewis Howes?

  Right.

• 30:15Speaker 01

  like can have fun.

• 30:16Lewis Howes?

  Not getting too fat?

• 30:17Speaker 01

Yeah, man, that's not, it's just not freaking getting all out of shape and nothing to do.

• 30:22Lewis Howes?

Exactly. Okay, well, maybe we'll come back on and do another show about relationships, because this is fun.

• 30:26Speaker 01

Yeah, I can do this all day, man.

• 30:28Lewis Howes?

Uh, let's go to point number, uh, I just said point number, um, six.

• 30:34Speaker 01

  Both 31.

• 30:35Lewis Howes?

That's point number seven. Okay, the TV show is six.

• 30:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:37Lewis Howes?

Number seven is we're both 31 years old. Now, this gets more interesting.

• 30:41Speaker 01

  Let's hear it.

• 30:42Lewis Howes?

  Number eight, we're both Pisces.

• 30:46Speaker 01

Oh, really? When's your B day?

• 30:47Lewis Howes?

Well, that's what number nine is.

• 30:49Speaker 01

  Is it March 18th?

• 30:50Lewis Howes?

  It's March 16th.

• 30:51Speaker 01

  Shit.

• 30:52Lewis Howes?

So we split St. Patty's Day, so we both have a birthday next to St. Patty's Day.

• 30:57Speaker 01

What? Did we just become best friends?

• 30:58Lewis Howes?

That's what I was like, why do I not hang out with this guy already?

• 31:03Lewis Howes?

Okay, so both born in March, both Pisces, because you're not always a Pisces when you're in March, which is, makes sense why we're both alpha lovers.

• 31:12Speaker 01

  True.

• 31:13Lewis Howes?

Uh, both split St. Patty's Day, number 10. Number 11. Both took up professional sports after competing in pro football. Yeah. So I play on the USA national team for a sport called team handball. Yeah. And the Olympics, the Olympic team. Sick. And we're trying to go to the Olympics in two years. So there's a very slim chance that we'll go. Why is it a slim chance? We have like the sickest athletes, but we've never played the game. So it's kind of like. That's tough. It's kind of me being like, uh, I'm a great football player. I'm going to go try playing in the NBA right now. I'm with you. Like, I can smoke them all in football if we're playing football. Yeah, but the. And I'm better athletes. The rest of the world's more skilled and. They've been playing since they're seven. So they just like flow and. So you guys don't have a chance? I, you know, there's a 3% chance.

• 31:58Lewis Howes?

3%? 3%. I was, there's always a chance. So you're telling me there's a chance? There's always a chance. Like, you know, teams could get sick, teams could just have their worst game. We could have our best games. We've got to beat three or four countries that are really good in South America. So the Pan American Games is how you qualify for the Olympics. Yeah. In team handball. And so it's all the countries in North and South America. South America's got pro leagues down there. We don't have a pro league in the US. So a lot of our guys go to Europe to play professionally. And then they come together for the USA national team and practice for like a couple of weeks a year. So these other guys are just training. And are they making decent money being pro? Uh, in Europe, you can make some good money. Really? It's, I mean, some of the bus guys are making probably like a million bucks a year in Europe. Pretty good.

• 32:41Lewis Howes?

But, um, I went to go play for a little bit in Spain on the team and some of the guys were making like, you know, four or 5,000 euros a month. So nothing crazy. Yeah. But it's like. And how often do you practice a week? Right now in the US, like once a week. Hmm. But I'm training every day. So it's like. When you mean training, you mean you're like lifting weights? I'm working, I'm doing CrossFit, kickboxing, running, playing basketball. I'm doing as much cross training. But you're not doing handball. But I'm not. And that's your guys' issue? Exactly. Cause you're, you're already a good athlete. Exactly. So it's not out of any court. Is the rest of the team, is the rest of the team in LA? No, they're all over the world. Dang, that's tough. But there, a lot of guys are practicing. A lot of guys are practicing every day. There's a, there's a, like, uh, the US, most of the US team is in Alabama, training at Auburn.

• 33:27Lewis Howes?

So I go down there like once every couple of months and train for a couple of weeks. That's cool then. With the team and the rest of the guys are in Europe playing professionally. So we're playing, but it's kind of hard. It's a tough dynamic, man. And do you love it? I love it, man. You love it? I love it. Handball's your passion? I mean, competing and playing. Competing's your passion, but handball's not. Handball's my passion too. Really? Yeah, it's like. I mean, with the, there's no other option for me to play on a world level. Yeah. In another sport. Unless I restart something new. And like try to learn a new skill. Like it took me three years to get to where I'm at in handball. Feel like you'd be a beast in fencing. I would be. I just feel like you would. I would be. Like, uh, all big and shit. Yeah, yeah. But it's like, do I want to fence all day, one on one with someone? No. Or don't want to like, yeah, handball's like, it's like lacrosse with your hands.

• 34:13Lewis Howes?

Sounds pretty dope. I don't know if you've ever seen it. I've never seen it. I'll have to show you. I know of it. I'll have to show you a video. You'd love it. They play handball on Venice Beach, correct? Different handball. Is it? There's two different types of handball. You're more aggressive handball. Imagine, uh, lacrosse with your hands. You're playing on that big of a field? With, on a bigger basketball court. Okay. It's like a little bit bigger than a basketball court with a mini soccer ball that you can dribble, pass, and you throw it into a net with your hands. Sick. So it's kind of like water polo. It's water polo without water. That's what I explain to people. Gotcha. Yeah. You're the only one who picked that up. Yeah, that's dope, man. Yeah. So we're the only, we're, we're, we've both played pro sports after completing football. I like it.

• 34:53Lewis Howes?

Professionally, which is like crazy, but you're like, you're like on your way to becoming a champion in the UFC. Well, you could be, you could be an Olympic medalist. Yeah, that's, that's a dream. So my dream was always to go to the Olympics as a kid. Yeah. And, uh, I was a decathlete in college. I was an All-American. Wow. But I knew that I wasn't good enough to go. Those guys are freaks. Super freaks. Freak athletes. Well, you're also too big, right? No. You're a lot bigger than those guys. I need to be, I need to lose like, yeah, I'm 225. You'd have, I mean, you have to have cardio for days, right? They're like 190, you know, they're like 6'3", 190. Really? Yeah. Cause you gotta be able to sprint, you gotta be able to do long distance. Do it all. Everything. Explosiveness. Yeah, it's, it's tricky. So, so this is my chance in the Olympics.

• 35:35Lewis Howes?

If we, however, if the US gets the bid in 2024, I'll be 40.

• 35:42Lewis Howes?

Or forty one by then and there's still a chance because we get an automatic qualifier then.

• 35:46Speaker 01

  Really?

• 35:47Lewis Howes?

So that's what I've kind of been my hope.

• 35:48Speaker 01

Who's the oldest on your team though?

• 35:50Lewis Howes?

Uh, there's a guy like thirty eight, I think. It's like if I stayed healthy and it's like I could be on the team.

• 35:55Speaker 01

Injury free, you could be on the team and maybe get the gold.

• 35:58Lewis Howes?

  No, we want to.

• 35:59Speaker 01

It's gonna be tough to place, isn't it?

• 36:00Lewis Howes?

It'd be tough, it'd be tough.

• 36:01Speaker 01

  It's like US and soccer.

• 36:02Lewis Howes?

To go, yeah, yeah, but in ten years, anything can happen, but um, just going to the Olympics would be a dream.

• 36:08Speaker 01

  Heck, yeah, man.

• 36:09Lewis Howes?

Just to walk through the opening ceremony and just be like representing the USA, be the most amazing experience. Yeah, so.

• 36:17Lewis Howes?

So that's a cool fact about us. Um, now, why did you decide to to take on the UFC or to take on MMA?

• 36:23Speaker 01

  To pursue, yeah, MMA, um.

• 36:25Lewis Howes?

And how many years after football were you like, okay, I'm gonna try this thing?

• 36:28Speaker 01

Yeah, so this, this is a little different, I think, than than most guys is, most guys fail in one sport and then try mixed martial arts and pursue the UFC. Uh, my goal, my dad has a, um, when I was a kid, I think third or fourth grade, they said, what do you want to be when you grow up? I was the only kid in the class who wrote two things. I said a ninja or or.

• 36:48Lewis Howes?

  Big ass ninja.

• 36:49Speaker 01

  Or an NFL football player.

• 36:50Lewis Howes?

I don't know ninja as big as you.

• 36:51Speaker 01

Yeah, right? So, um, and the reason I said that was because, uh, my favorite movie as a kid, um, my movie and my brother's was, um, Bloodsport, John Claude Van Damme.

• 37:01Lewis Howes?

  It's a great movie.

• 37:02Speaker 01

So at the time, there, there was really no outlet. There was, there was no bloodsport and granted, no one's gonna put their kid into something like that.

• 37:10Lewis Howes?

  Right.

• 37:10Speaker 01

  The UFC wasn't as big.

• 37:11Lewis Howes?

Karate was the only thing, right?

• 37:12Speaker 01

The first UFC was in nineteen ninety-three in Denver, my hometown, and I was obsessed with it, loved it. I saw it on VHS like a year later. My uncle Charlie would, uh, ditch school and watch him with him.

• 37:23Lewis Howes?

  Wow, that's amazing.

• 37:24Speaker 01

So that's as close as bloodsport as you could get. And I was like, damn, I want to do that. And Hoist Gracie, the jujitsu guy was tapping everyone out, so I wanted to do that. Um, but I did everything, I mean, baseball, soccer, uh, football, obviously, uh, you name it, I did everything. Basketball. I played sports year round. I was obsessed with sports. I just happened to have a knack for football and I realized I could, you know, it could pay for my college.

• 37:46Lewis Howes?

  You're a big guy, you're tall.

• 37:48Speaker 01

I really wasn't that big. In, in high school, I was a late bloomer. I was, uh, I think I graduated maybe six foot, one seventy-five, like a smaller guy.

• 37:55Lewis Howes?

  Geez.

• 37:55Speaker 01

Yeah, I, I grew up, I was never like the big guy ever. Um. So for for me, I I knew I loved the UFC. I followed it very closely. I knew I had that athletic ability to do it, but takes a lot more than that. The the mental capacity to be a fighter is insane. So um. You gotta take a you gotta train like hours and hours. There's no offseason. There's just no like. Constantly. If you take two weeks off, you're screwed. Yeah. Well, it's funny to me. People talk about NFL training camps, which I've done, or college Division One football camps. They're generally four to five weeks long. They're hard, too. They're very right, two days, three days. They are hard. Two days. Now you can't. The pads. But now in. It's only two days now. Yeah. But and you can't do them back to back. Yeah, you gotta do like a little break. Yeah, you have to do breaks. It's it's different. Because we're dying when we're in high school.

• 38:40Speaker 01

True. They're like passing out from water and shit. There was a couple of kids who died. That's true. That's true. Like literally die. Yeah. On three days. So when I hear people talk about training camp, it's funny because in the UFC, you're talking about training camps 10 to 12 weeks long, two, three days, six days a week. Prepare for one fight, not like a season. Fifteen minute fight, and if you're lucky, 25 minute fight. But one 15 minute fight. It could be 10 seconds. Where's the Super Bowl? Where's the Super Bowl? Like, every fight is the Super Bowl. Jesus. So for me, um, playing in college, like you said, I started off at Whittier, um, played lacrosse, football there, um, and then always wanted to pursue Division One, went to Division One, excelled there. At Colorado, right? Yep, at University of Colorado, got a scholarship there. And played with Scotty, too, right?

• 39:21Speaker 01

Scotty McKnight, good buddy of mine, man. Really good buddy. Stud. Um, played there. And I I fell out of the out of the love for the sport probably going into my junior year. I was just like, oh, this isn't what I want to do. I my entire life, I thought this was what I was gonna do, and that this isn't what I want to do. Wow. I just wasn't enjoying it anymore. And if I don't enjoy something, it is I do not hide it, man. But I still excelled. I still did well and and you know, and gave all I could and trained hard. But I started doing after practice Jiu Jitsu and boxing classes. Shut up. Mm hmm. No one knew. No one knew. I'd I'd walk into this gym and start to do Jiu Jitsu, boxing, and I'd be exhausted, but I had this dream. And then, um. Wow.

• 40:02Speaker 01

I was my, I think, I forget what the ball was, the tangerine ball or some shenanigans like that. My last game of my senior year, we played. Played Clemson and just got destroyed. I think not destroyed, we got beat. I should remember like, yeah, this is the last time I'm ever gonna play football. And you know how most kids are crying? I wasn't. For me, I was almost like, let's next chapter, let's do this, man. And um.

• 40:25Lewis Howes?

  Then you played pro.

• 40:26Speaker 01

So I remember telling my dad, um, I, I don't want to play football anymore. He's like, why the hell not? I'm like, I just, I don't want to pursue the NFL. Um, the NFL came calling, the, the Buff, the Buffalo Bills, New York Jets, and one other team, I got invited to training camp. And uh, so I went to the training camp.

• 40:44Lewis Howes?

You're playing running back or fullback?

• 40:46Speaker 01

I was like an H back.

• 40:47Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 40:47Speaker 01

Yeah. So um, got hurt in training camp, uh, tore, tore a hamstring and as an unrestricted free agent, undrafted agent. It's literally like, um, it, I mean, you're screwed, man. You're super, super screwed. I mean, e- even if that didn't happen, it'd been tough for me to make the team. So I get done with that and um, man, I, and then Utah Blaze kept it going to pay the bills now. Now we're talking about money. Again, still training MMA, still doing, still doing jujitsu boxing. I was like, cause I knew that I could. Uh, I've, I feel like I have an athletic advantage in mixed martial arts. I knew if I could take the time and train and not rush it, that I could do something special.

• 41:26Lewis Howes?

You could be a better athlete than everyone.

• 41:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:27Lewis Howes?

They just gotta learn the craft.

• 41:29Speaker 01

Gotta learn the craft, which is, which is a beast to say. And, and I almost had a false sense of confidence, but at the same time, that false sense of confidence takes you a lot of places where you probably shouldn't be. But if you pass it, you're gonna do pretty well.

• 41:41Lewis Howes?

Cause it, half the time, it's not about the technique when the moment comes. Like, you've gotta know the skills and know how to get out of stuff, but it's like, you gotta have the passion, the like, energy and just like.

• 41:50Speaker 01

  Heart, man.

• 41:50Lewis Howes?

  Heart.

• 41:51Speaker 01

  Heart.

• 41:51Lewis Howes?

  It takes one hit.

• 41:52Speaker 01

Heart takes you so far, it's not even funny.

• 41:54Lewis Howes?

One hit and the guy's done.

• 41:55Speaker 01

If you have a, a belief system in yourself and a heart, it's gonna take you a lot of cool, cool places. So for me, um, I just remember telling my, my dad and every, and my family, like, football's done, man. I don't want to do it. And they're like, what are you gonna do? Well, I want to pursue, uh, I want to get to the UFC. And they're like, you're an idiot.

• 42:12Lewis Howes?

  Wow. And you're 23, 24?

• 42:14Speaker 01

Yeah. They're like, you're an idiot. I have a, you know, I have a, a degree. I have people offer me jobs and I'm like. I don't want to do it, man. So um, I started training full time. Jiu Jitsu, boxing, every single day. Just happened to stumble upon MMA royalty. You're talking, if you guys, most of your listeners probably won't know these guys, but if they know anything about the UFC. Um, I walked in the gym, I had Shane Carwin, George St Pierre, Rashad Evans, just Nate Markart, the who's who of the UFC and. Which gym was this? This was a high altitude and and uh, T's KO in Denver, Colorado. And they were training there? They were all. You just walked in, you saw them all? I walked in and and uh, one day it was Shane Carwin, we're both heavyweights. He was the heavyweight champ of the UFC and um,

• 42:58Speaker 01

at the time, he only had two fights, I had none. We started training together and then um, this is how it all went down. I was training for about six months and he goes, hey, Golden Gloves is this weekend. This is on Tuesday. He goes, Golden Gloves is this weekend. I go, oh, cool, man. He goes, yeah, I signed you up for it. Wow. I'm like, dude, I'm, I'm not ready for this. He's like, I'm telling you, you're ready. Cause you've been training with, he was the champ. Well, at the time, I had two fights. He wasn't the champion. He became the champ. Yeah, uh, several years later, he did, but we were both on this. The track. Yeah, track to become UFC fighters. Wow. And he was like, I signed you up for Golden Gloves, which is all boxing. And I had no boxing experience, zero boxing experience. Really? And uh, I was like, alright. Were you training at all in boxing at that point? I was training sparring a lot, but. No fighting?

• 43:39Speaker 01

Not like, I wasn't having a camp or anything like that. And this is Golden Gloves, man, the biggest tournament in the nation. So. Wow. And it was, you know, in Denver. So. He goes, you're fighting this Saturday. So I'm like, alright, cool. It's like amateur, is that what it is? It's amateur, yeah, it's all amateur. No pros? No pros, all amateur. But when you're talking about the amateur scene, you're talking about guys who have forty, fifty fights. It's a, it's a monster. So um, I show up and I remember telling my dad, cause my dad really wasn't for it. And my brother was, my brother helped me out, like when I couldn't pay my, my car loan, all, all that stuff. My brother would let me stay at his house and dude, he believed in me since day one. Older brother, yeah. Yeah, my brother's the same way. So um, I told my dad, I said, just come to this Golden Gloves box match. If I lose, I'll, I'll go get a regular job. Shut up.

• 44:24Speaker 01

If I lose, I'll go get, again, this is this false sense of confidence where you've got to risk a lot to gain a lot. So I told my dad, if come, I lose, I'm done. You're right. I'll go get a job. I'll put a suit tie on and fricking hit. You want him to at least see you, what you were gonna do. At least comes to check it out, man. I want to put all this pressure on myself. So my dad shows up. The girlfriend's a whole different story. That's a funny. You got a girlfriend then too? Oh, bro. That's a whole different story. I'll get to after. So my family all shows up and the, uh, you look at the matchups and I don't know any of these guys and I have zero experience. These guys have some experience and they put me in the A class, which is the highest class.

• 44:59Speaker 01

And, uh, that night I had, uh, two or three fights and knocked all three guys out first round. Three not, and there's no knock. It's you have full headgear on 16 ounce gloves. So the knockouts aren't heard of. Three knockouts and everyone's like, all right, well shit, maybe these guys just suck. He's fighting. The next night's the championship and I'm fighting a guy from army and he's six, eight, 270 pounds. He trains every day. In the army and has like 70 amateur fights. He's lost like four. I'm like, well, all right, all right. I see what we're doing here. Like I looked up at God like, okay, I saw you doing here. Maybe I should take a different path. Six, eight? Six, eight. Just monster. I have a great picture where, uh, I'm landing his right hand. Yeah. And it's like Mike Tyson's punch out. Like I'm Mac, you know, blasting this dude and.

• 45:44Speaker 01

Is that online? Uh, I don't think it is. I'll post it. I'll, I'll send it to you. Send it to be able to post on the show notes. And, uh, yeah, knocked him out first round and, uh. Bigger they are, the bigger they fall, right? I guess, man. And then after that, I was like, all right, well shit, we might be able to do something here, man. And my dad was like, all right, well, let's see what happens. He's like, don't get too excited. Month, month later, I enter the biggest. So you won? Won, won the whole thing. You won the whole thing? Won the whole thing. That was the championship fight? Gold Gloves champ, yeah. Wow. Is that the national champion? That's no, so, uh, once you win the regionals, then you can go to the, and I didn't cause I, my pursuit was only MMA. So I did that. I was like, dude, check it out. This is cool. I did nothing past that. Boxing's not my passion. Yeah. So then the. And maybe you would have done well, but maybe not. Who knows?

• 46:26Speaker 01

I'm sure I would have done well if I trained for it, but who, yeah, exactly. Who knows? But that was not the goal. That was just a sidetrack. So then a month later, um. They got you a taste of competing. Yes. And at least people bought into it, you know? At least people were like, all right, we'll. He's got something. Yeah. We, at least we have something to see that he's actually not a dumbass playing grab ass in the gym every day. So the next month, they signed me up for the biggest jujitsu tournament in Colorado, like the Colorado Open. And a buddy of mine was running it, Seth Daniels. And I wasn't even planning to do it. In the morning of, my buddy texted me, he goes, come on, man. Come do the tournament. So I'm like, alright. I wake up, I'm running late. Run in, register, walk in, they're like, you're up, man. And I entered the black belt division. At the time, I was a white belt.

• 47:10Speaker 01

And I end up winning the entire tournament in that single day. And again, my dad's there, my whole family's there for support. And almost all of them were submissions. Fought a, I don't wanna say fight, because it's a grappling match. But I grappled a UFC guy, who was a famous UFC guy at the time. And what's funny to me is, Beat him. Well, what's funny is, I was wrestling these, grappling these other guys. And he made a comment to my buddy that goes, he's just an athlete, man. He's not very good. And I was choking guys out with the same chokehold, all of them. He goes, if you know how to defend, that's fricking easy. And you talked him out of the same place. He's talking shit to me, right? And this guy's a name, and his whole fanbase is there with shirts on that have his name on it. Like a Chuck Liddell type of name? For sure, man. Yeah, his name was Mike Nichols. Yeah, I don't know.

• 47:52Speaker 01

Yeah, he was on Ultimate Fighter, and he fought, he fought on, in the UFC. Not a successful UFC career, but at the time, he was a big name. When you're talking with someone who has zero experience. He was a black belt. So I go against him in the finals, and caught him in the same move, and put him to sleep. Shut up. Put him straight to sleep in front of everyone. Tough to beat strength sometimes. I tell you what. If you know how to get out of it. Collected my check, I was like, good shit, man, here we go. And then took, took an MMA fight. First three fights, I think my longest fight was like 53 seconds, all knockouts in the first round. Uh, no, this is MMA, so this is on like the regional tour. Gotcha. To get into the UFC. Had three fights, and then the, Knock him out. Knockouts, yeah, all knockouts, vicious knockouts.

• 48:36Speaker 01

And then the Ultimate Fighter, the reality series called. And that, that was my ticket into the chocolate factory. That was my golden ticket. I got on there, and I was a finalist, yeah. That was my, you know how on Eight Mile, when he gets up there and raps and destroys everyone? The Ultimate Fighter was my wrap-off. I was Eminem, and the rest of the house. Was those the the rappers and I wrapped off to the finals.

• 48:57Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 48:57Speaker 01

  And earned my.

• 48:58Lewis Howes?

How many, how many uh fights in the show does it take to get to the final?

• 49:02Speaker 01

Three in the house. So you're living with, if people don't know, it's 16 fighters, 16 professional fighters live in a house. You, you have no phone, no communication, no communication outside.

• 49:12Lewis Howes?

  No girls?

• 49:12Speaker 01

No girls, all the alcohol, all the food you can eat.

• 49:15Lewis Howes?

  Shut up.

The only time you can leave the house is to train. There's no TV, there's no form of entertainment. So guys go crazy.

• 49:21Lewis Howes?

  No TV?

• 49:22Speaker 01

No TV, no, no books, no books, no phone.

• 49:24Lewis Howes?

  No books?

• 49:25Speaker 01

  No books, no phone.

• 49:25Lewis Howes?

  Can't read?

• 49:26Speaker 01

For six weeks. They just want drama. It's like the.

• 49:29Lewis Howes?

  Oh my god.

• 49:29Speaker 01

  Think of the real world.

• 49:30Lewis Howes?

  Think of the real world.

• 49:31Speaker 01

  Testosterone with world-class fighters.

• 49:34Lewis Howes?

  With surprise to win.

• 49:35Speaker 01

With, with, uh, yeah, like basically, oh, you wanna do this as a career? Fight each other.

• 49:41Lewis Howes?

  The only chance is.

• 49:41Speaker 01

The, the only two left standing are gonna have a career.

• 49:45Lewis Howes?

  What?

• 49:46Speaker 01

Oh my god. You're talking about guys in the house from all different avenues, man. It's a beast. And on that show, I remember probably through Xin is when guys start to break mentally. I remember I was cool. I remember I'd write in a journal. I have this journal and one day I'll write a book and this journal's gonna be in there, but it just showed, I look back at it now and again, this, this confidence in myself. I remember looking at, at the journal and just being like, everyone's freaking out. I'm cool. I have three more weeks to go. If I do this, I'm gonna make a name for myself. I'm gonna be able to do what I've always wanted to do and be a professional athlete. So it's cool, man, to see that stuff.

• 50:18Lewis Howes?

Wow, dude. So, so you won all two fights. You made it.

• 50:21Speaker 01

  Three fights.

• 50:22Lewis Howes?

  You won all?

• 50:22Speaker 01

  All three finishes.

• 50:23Lewis Howes?

  All three.

• 50:23Speaker 01

  All three finishes.

• 50:24Lewis Howes?

  You won the whole thing?

• 50:25Speaker 01

Uh, I know. And then, so that you're in the house for six weeks where you fight each other and the, the, the two who were undefeated in the house move on to the finale.

• 50:36Lewis Howes?

  And there's two teams, right?

• 50:37Speaker 01

Two teams. Our team won. And then we.

• 50:39Lewis Howes?

You fought against the other team's champion?

• 50:41Speaker 01

We were so successful. Uh, our, the, both me and this guy, other guy, Roy Nelson, who's a phenomenal fighter, both had to fight each other on the same team because we destroyed their other team.

• 50:51Lewis Howes?

So there was no one left.

• 50:52Speaker 01

Yeah, and I, I lost in the finals. Granted.

• 50:54Lewis Howes?

  To your own teammate?

• 50:55Speaker 01

My own teammate. I had four fights at the time. He had 27, former world champ before he came in the house. So I was like this young kid fighting this monster and um.

• 51:04Lewis Howes?

He was pretty good. Did he beat you pretty easily or was it kind of like?

• 51:07Speaker 01

No, no, no, no. I was kind of putting it on him and then in the first round, he caught me behind the ear with a huge right hand.

• 51:13Lewis Howes?

  Oh, he hit you.

• 51:14Speaker 01

Right hand. And he's known for it, man. Uh, you know, I don't, I don't, uh, you know, I, I, I don't, um, I don't regret that at all. I was a very young kid. I.

• 51:22Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 51:23Speaker 01

I probably shouldn't have been in there with him with four fights. You're talking about a guy, world-class guy like Roy Nelson.

• 51:28Lewis Howes?

  He knows what he's doing.

• 51:28Speaker 01

He's a monster and both of us are have really good careers in the UFC now.

• 51:33Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 51:33Speaker 01

  We're both doing very well.

• 51:34Lewis Howes?

So you got, so even though you didn't win, you still got to sign a contract.

• 51:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 51:38Lewis Howes?

It's only one supposed to get a contract, right? Or is it kind of the take?

• 51:41Speaker 01

Uh, usually who the two make finale, you'll get a contract. However, if you lose that finale and then they give you a fight and you lose that next fight, you're not gonna have a job. You're gonna get cut. So that next fight, not only, so I lost that finale. First loss ever. Tough to deal with.

• 51:56Lewis Howes?

  I hear you.

• 51:57Speaker 01

Very tough to deal with. Not cool. Lost that fight and then like, cool. Well, now you're gonna have to fight this guy. It's gonna be in your hometown. First time UFC came to Denver, I don't know how long. So it's in my hometown, all this pressure.

• 52:09Lewis Howes?

When was this? A few months later?

• 52:10Speaker 01

Yeah, probably like four months later, five months later. And they give me this, at the time, I just thought he was a complete monster. This guy named, was Chase Gormly in Denver, hometown. Have to win this fight or I'm gonna have to go.

• 52:21Lewis Howes?

Or you're not in the UFC anymore.

• 52:22Speaker 01

Go apply at Starbucks or something.

• 52:23Lewis Howes?

  Wow. So what happened?

• 52:25Speaker 01

Knocked him out in 42 seconds.

• 52:28Lewis Howes?

Oh my God. Were you just like?

• 52:29Speaker 01

I've never been so nervous in my life. Was not on fire. So scared. It was unreal.

• 52:35Lewis Howes?

Cause it was like the whole stadium was watching you.

• 52:37Speaker 01

The entire stadium, when I walked out, the crowd goes nuts. The loudest crowd I've ever heard. Even Dana White tweeted, whoa.

• 52:43Lewis Howes?

  Cause you're the hometown boy.

• 52:45Speaker 01

Just knocked out. Yeah, like, and it was insane, man.

• 52:48Lewis Howes?

  I mean, we're.

• 52:48Speaker 01

And I wasn't even the main event. I was just the hometown kid, but the arena was stacked because everyone knew I was fighting.

• 52:53Lewis Howes?

Right, right. So after you knocked him out, what was that feeling like?

• 52:57Speaker 01

Um, I just, I, man, I don't know how to describe it. It's one of those feelings where you're just like, holy schnikes. Wow, we're actually doing this, man. You're actually have a career. And then shortly after that, um, probably like seven months after that, then I'm fighting Gabriel Gonzaga, where if you guys know UFC Gabriel Gonzaga, um, I think he's ranked 10th in the world now, but at the time, you know, you're talking about a, a legit, legit monster. Like you're talking about one of the most talented guys in the world. Beat him and, um. It's it's just a different animal, man. And it's like i- i- in the UFC and there's these moments in your career and they they had I'll talk to the the Ultimate Fighter guys, the guys who are in the house now, or they had me talk to previous seasons.

• 53:42Lewis Howes?

  One time, right?

• 53:42Speaker 01

I was a guest coach on one of them on season 14 and um or maybe 17. I think it was 14, yeah, 14. But I go and talk to those guys and what they don't realize is they think by make it to make it into the house that they've made it. They're like, dude, we made it on Ultimate Fighter. I'm like, guys.

• 54:00Lewis Howes?

  Only one dude.

• 54:00Speaker 01

This is, first of all, for you getting the house, that's great, but you should expect to be here. Now, your journey begins. You gotta do well in this house and don't get it twisted. I'm not, don't, I don't want you to overlook what's on the next side of the hill. But after you get over this hill on Ultimate Fighter, then you're actually in the UFC. These dudes aren't from a reality show. These dudes are world-class badasses waiting for your pretty ass. With experience. With with you're talking about guys who are pursue of a world-class title, trying to be the champions of the world. You're not fighting other guys in the house who are, we don't know if they're UFC fighters. These guys are veterans.

• 54:38Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 54:38Speaker 01

  These guys are veterans.

• 54:39Lewis Howes?

Know the tricks, they've been in the crowds.

• 54:41Speaker 01

Exactly, man. So you're talking about a different animal. And and I'm actually, August 17th, I go to uh give Ohio State football team a motivational speech.

• 54:50Lewis Howes?

  No way.

• 54:51Speaker 01

Yeah. So it should be interesting, man. Yeah, yeah. I just thought about this. Yeah, man, just thought about this. Uh, Urban Meyer, yeah, asked me to come up there.

• 54:57Lewis Howes?

  That's amazing.

• 54:58Speaker 01

And my my whole my whole deal is you should expect to be champions. At Ohio State, you should expect to be national champions. You'll see me after a fight, I'm happy, but um I dissect my fight on what I could have done better and stuff like that. Cause I expect to be the best, man. And uh for those guys, I I hate when I see a guy make an interception or I see a guy score a touchdown, how excited he is.

• 55:22Lewis Howes?

  You expect it.

• 55:23Speaker 01

Cool, man. You were put in that position to succeed. You should expect to make that play.

• 55:28Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 55:29Speaker 01

100%. You should demand that out of yourself.

• 55:31Lewis Howes?

  Exactly.

• 55:32Speaker 01

  So that's the whole message.

• 55:33Lewis Howes?

  Yeah. Man.

• 55:34Speaker 01

Lot going on right there, man.

• 55:36Lewis Howes?

  That's incredible.

• 55:36Speaker 01

  Lot going on right there.

• 55:38Lewis Howes?

  Interested in this now.

• 55:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, man.

• 55:39Lewis Howes?

  This is amazing.

• 55:42Lewis Howes?

Well, next, how much time we got?

• 55:44Speaker 01

You got a lot of time, man.

• 55:46Lewis Howes?

  Okay, cool.

• 55:46Speaker 01

  Yeah, at least.

• 55:47Lewis Howes?

We could talk for hours, man.

• 55:48Speaker 01

I'd talk your hair off, man.

• 55:49Lewis Howes?

  Um.

• 55:50Speaker 01

  I love this stuff.

• 55:51Lewis Howes?

Okay, I'll throw in another tip here, another common fact.

• 55:55Speaker 01

Bring it. What number we on? Y'all, fact 372, we both like M and Ms. Alright, alright.

• 56:03Lewis Howes?

This is just off the research that I did recently.

• 56:06Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 56:06Lewis Howes?

A little bit. I'm sure we got a million things in common.

• 56:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:10Lewis Howes?

  Number 12, we're both 6'4".

• 56:12Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 56:13Lewis Howes?

  6'4", right?

• 56:14Speaker 01

  Yeah, 6'4".

• 56:14Lewis Howes?

  You're a little bigger than me. I'm about 225 or 240.

• 56:17Speaker 01

  245. Oh, you know what? Right now, I'm 254.

• 56:19Lewis Howes?

  Damn.

• 56:20Speaker 01

I've been, I'm like, right, so I fought four weeks ago. After a fight, I like to recover and just put on size and mass. Cause when I go into camp, my body just breaks down.

• 56:29Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 56:29Speaker 01

So right now, I'm heavy deadlifting, eating wherever the heck I want.

• 56:33Lewis Howes?

  That's good.

• 56:33Speaker 01

I'm thick right now. Thicker than a Snickers right now, just thick juicy quads and shit, just. My manager, who hasn't seen me in a while, came out to LA and was just like,

• 56:43Lewis Howes?

  Damn, bro.

• 56:43Speaker 01

What have you been doing? Just like, damn.

• 56:45Lewis Howes?

  Grass-fed beef out there.

• 56:47Speaker 01

Yeah, man, it's good, it's good. So, uh, it's good, man, cause you can't, you can't have the car in sixth gear all the time. You gotta pull it down to second gear and recover and take care of your body.

• 56:57Lewis Howes?

  When is the next fight?

• 56:58Speaker 01

I wish I knew. Um, that's, that's the problem in the heavyweight division. I think right now, I'm.

• 57:02Lewis Howes?

  There's just not many guys.

• 57:03Speaker 01

I think right now, I'm ranked 14th in the world and, um, I've either.

• 57:08Lewis Howes?

  Slipping, bro.

• 57:08Speaker 01

I know, I know. If you're not number one, if you're not first, you're last. But, um, yeah, slipping is right, but, um.

• 57:16Lewis Howes?

What, what's the goal? To get back to number one or?

• 57:18Speaker 01

I've never been number one. I think the highest I've ever been ranked is like nine, 10 or nine.

• 57:22Lewis Howes?

  Okay.

• 57:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:23Lewis Howes?

To get in the top 5 would be pretty sweet, huh?

• 57:25Speaker 01

Top 5 would be sweet. Um, the rank, the rankings are interesting and it's, it's, it's a newer thing with the UFC, but, um. In the guys ahead me, I've either fought them, I've already fought them, or they're matched up. So, and there's not a lot of-

• 57:38Lewis Howes?

What does that mean, matched up?

• 57:40Speaker 01

Uh, like they have, they're supposed to fight other people. Yeah, fights coming up. So I gotta wait and kinda, the waiting game's tough, man. And it's always fun to me, cause um, people say, "Well, you know, this'll be my 12th or 13th fight in the UFC."

• 57:56Lewis Howes?

  That's pretty good.

• 57:56Speaker 01

Which is a lot, yeah, especially if you count, if you count my Ultimate Fighter fights. Yeah, so which is good. And people are like, "Oh, you're a veteran now. You should be comfortable in the octagon." Listen, man, there's nothing you can emulate to the, to act like it's the octagon. There's nothing you can do. In football, you can go one versus ones. You can go number one defense versus number one offense. It's intense, and you can have a crowd there and it simulates what you're gonna see in the game. You just can't do that in UFC. I'm never comfortable in there, man.

• 58:24Lewis Howes?

  There's 20,000 people.

• 58:25Speaker 01

I'm never comfortable. The lights are hot, the octagon's different.

• 58:28Lewis Howes?

  Can't see anything.

• 58:29Speaker 01

It's cold, you can't, it's hard to hear your corner, the guy you're fighting. Like this last fight, we thought he was gonna do one thing, he did another. It's just, you can't emulate it, man. It's just, it's tough, so I'm not comfortable in there yet. Which is weird to say, cause you know, I have a good amount of fights. My record's 14 and 4, you know, and you'd think I'd be, that's pro. With all my amateurs and stuff like that, you'd think I'd be more comfortable. Most guys aren't. There's the exception, guys like Anderson Silva, stuff like that, but in general, you're just not comfortable in there. I would, listen, people think, you know, what they see in the octagon, it's an act. UFC fighters are very, very good actors. And I've been in the back-

• 59:04Lewis Howes?

  They're scared as crap, though.

• 59:06Speaker 01

Everyone is terrified in the back.

• 59:08Lewis Howes?

  But they're acting like it.

• 59:08Speaker 01

You have to. You have to.

• 59:10Lewis Howes?

Fake it till you make it.

• 59:11Speaker 01

Fake it till you make it. And for me, when I'm in the back, I am terrified.

• 59:14Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 59:15Speaker 01

Pure tear. I'm just like, dang, what am I doing, man? What am I doing? Once I hit the crowd, though, I'm cool. Once I hit the crowds, showtime, let's do this.

• 59:24Lewis Howes?

  Let's go, baby.

• 59:25Speaker 01

Yeah, man, let's go. And I don't fight angry. No one, if anyone who fights angry is gonna get beat up.

• 59:30Lewis Howes?

Yeah. It's almost like, they take too long for, when you first walk out to hear the music. It's like, I feel like it takes forever. I would be like, let's go.

• 59:38Speaker 01

Well, this is the worst part.

• 59:39Lewis Howes?

  Introductions and all this crap.

• 59:41Speaker 01

Bro, that, like, that, that does suck. However, the worst is fight day, the hurry up and wait game, so-

• 59:47Lewis Howes?

God, you just wait all day, right?

• 59:48Speaker 01

Yeah, so, let's see, if you're on pay-per-view, which my last, you know, number of fights have always been televised, you're, the main card doesn't start sometimes 8pm. So, I get to locker room at 6pm. 6:30, you know what I'm saying?

• 1:00:02Lewis Howes?

  Sitting there, taping up.

• 1:00:03Speaker 01

The whole day you're in the hotel waiting around. Oh, I gotta go fight this another grown killer in the cage. This is what I do for a living. This is how I make money. I fight another man in my underwear in a cage.

• 1:00:13Lewis Howes?

  It's crazy, man.

• 1:00:14Speaker 01

Crazy, right? I seem like a pretty smart dude, right? Like, pretty, pretty normal, right? Something's wrong, something's loose.

• 1:00:21Lewis Howes?

It's good though, man, it's great.

• 1:00:22Speaker 01

  Just kidding.

• 1:00:23Lewis Howes?

Now, how does a, now, buddy of mine, Aubrey Marcus, is, you know, the founder of Onnit, and, you know, I think you know him as well, he's friends with Joe Rogan.

• 1:00:31Speaker 01

Yeah, did a podcast, yeah, did a podcast with Aubrey with Rogan.

• 1:00:34Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 1:00:34Speaker 01

And, uh, yeah, Rogan's a very close friend.

• 1:00:36Lewis Howes?

Yeah, and, uh, he was telling me that, like, he can't sponsor athletes to be, he can kind of like sponsor them on the side, but they can't have anything in the UFC, like, what's the deal with sponsorships in the UFC? It's kind of like they have a monopoly on athletes, right?

• 1:00:50Speaker 01

  Oh, 100%.

• 1:00:51Lewis Howes?

You really can't make that much, it sounds like.

• 1:00:53Speaker 01

Uh, no, no, I mean, I, I, I do, I do, I do really well.

• 1:00:56Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, that's good.

• 1:00:57Speaker 01

  Yeah, I, I, I do.

• 1:00:58Lewis Howes?

  Through sponsorships or through UFC?

• 1:01:00Speaker 01

Both, both, but mainly sponsorships, yeah, but.

• 1:01:02Lewis Howes?

More so than, than, uh, payments through the UFC or through, uh?

• 1:01:06Speaker 01

Yeah, I make more in sponsorship than I do from the UFC.

• 1:01:08Lewis Howes?

But don't the sponsors have to pay the UFC?

• 1:01:11Speaker 01

This is the thing, so if, so let's say, for example, UFC has a, uh, contract with Monster Headphones.

• 1:01:17Lewis Howes?

  Yep.

• 1:01:17Speaker 01

The Monster sponsors the UFC in headphones. So I can't bring in another competitor like Beats by Dre, Soul headphones. I can't wear those in the octagon. What I can do is have an outside the octagon.

• 1:01:29Lewis Howes?

  Sponsor.

• 1:01:30Speaker 01

Deal, which is a lot of my sponsorship, which is a lot, a way a lot of guys are going. So I'm sponsored by Soul headphones. So I'll do photo shoots for them, uh,

• 1:01:38Lewis Howes?

  You'll take those Beats off.

• 1:01:39Speaker 01

In the locker room, yeah, right, in the locker room, I'll put them on. Um, but I can't wear them, I can't have anything inside the octagon.

• 1:01:45Lewis Howes?

Nothing on the picture, on the posters, or the banners, or whatever.

• 1:01:48Speaker 01

  Nothing.

• 1:01:48Lewis Howes?

So you get a sponsorship deal outside of it?

• 1:01:50Speaker 01

  Outside, and, and.

• 1:01:51Lewis Howes?

If you've got a big following, then you can kind of work that out.

• 1:01:54Speaker 01

And, and, and inside the octagon, yeah. I mean, they have, I think, Dodge, Harley-Davidson, Monster, Zions.

• 1:02:00Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:00Speaker 01

Um, you're talking about, you can't compete with any of those. They're, they have that on lockdown.

• 1:02:06Lewis Howes?

  It's crazy.

• 1:02:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:02:07Lewis Howes?

But that's cool that you get sponsorships outside that, like, are still, like, you know? We just want to be attached to you.

• 1:02:11Speaker 01

For sure. You know, on, on, on social media, if you follow me out there, at Brendan Schaub, both on Instagram and Twitter, I'm sure you put it up, but if you follow me on there, I'm a monster on social media, man. For, for me, it's a good way to, to have a voice as a professional athlete.

• 1:02:26Lewis Howes?

  Of course.

• 1:02:27Speaker 01

  And that's why you see-

• 1:02:28Lewis Howes?

You have a podcast as well.

• 1:02:29Speaker 01

Yeah, but a pretty successful podcast, The Fighter and the Kid. It's on iTunes and if you follow me on uh, social media, see it. I post all sorts of stuff about it.

• 1:02:38Lewis Howes?

  Yep.

• 1:02:38Speaker 01

Um, and uh, the, the thing is-

• 1:02:41Lewis Howes?

  Look at you over there.

• 1:02:42Speaker 01

Yeah, a couple of cuties. Um, the thing is, is what's different with UFC athletes is the, the ability to contact them. If you see them in a hotel or social media, I promise you, most of the time, Kobe, and I'm not relating myself Kobe Bryant, but if you tweet at Kobe Bryant, you tweet at NFL guy, you're not gonna get much. You tweet at a top level UFC guy, you're gonna hear background probably.

• 1:03:06Lewis Howes?

  Really?

• 1:03:07Speaker 01

Cause we grew up in the social media world, the UFC and social media and Twitter. They promote Twitter and Instagram on there and Facebook because it-

• 1:03:16Lewis Howes?

It kinda screw you everywhere else, right?

• 1:03:17Speaker 01

We kinda, yeah, well, we kinda came up all together. Like, social media, UFC boom, it would, it's kinda goes hand in hand.

• 1:03:24Lewis Howes?

UFC has gotten its popularity through social media.

• 1:03:27Speaker 01

Yes, and Lorenzo Fertitta, uh, who's the owner, uh, one of the owners, and Dana White, the president, say, "We want you to tweet so much, we wouldn't mind you tweeting in between rounds even, which no one ever does."

• 1:03:37Lewis Howes?

  Right, right.

• 1:03:37Speaker 01

Uh, but still, that's, that's just an example of how much they want you on social media.

• 1:03:42Lewis Howes?

My friend, I believe my friend, uh, kind of trained everyone. Her name's Amy Jo Martin. I know she works directly with Dana.

• 1:03:48Speaker 01

Yes. She came in and, and gave us a, uh, a tutorial, yeah.

• 1:03:52Lewis Howes?

Yeah, so I know that they are invested in that for sure. And that's cool that she-

• 1:03:57Speaker 01

Yeah, she, she was a beast, man. She was, she was awesome. Yeah, she has a ton of followers.

• 1:04:01Lewis Howes?

Yeah, yeah. She's done her stuff.

• 1:04:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:04:03Lewis Howes?

She kinda got in early with Shaq and kinda blew up. She got, she got suggested user when Twitter was doing that, and so she just blew up.

• 1:04:10Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:04:11Lewis Howes?

And she's worked with Shaq and a bunch of other big names.

• 1:04:13Speaker 01

Uh, and a lot of guys, and I say this all the time, like, you have this platform and, uh, in the UFC, you have this platform. I don't- I don't know how long I'm gonna fight. I have no idea, but I I know right now I have the ability to reach out to a lot of people. The goal is to be the champion. That's the number one goal. The podcast, the showstop, I do a UFC now show on UFC Fight Pass. Uh, once every other week and I and I'm starting to do a show UFC tonight on Fox Sports. Nice. Yes, and that starts September. However, all that stops if if I'm not taking care of business aside the octagon. I realize. Cause they don't want you in there unless you're. Nah, man, and. Relevant. Yeah, you gotta be relevant. So, um, for me, I have this platform and

• 1:04:56Speaker 01

a lot of guys aren't using. They think, you know, that I just gotta fight. I have to fight and social media is not a big deal. You gotta build your business. Brand. It's a brand, man. If you want sponsorships to jump on board and you want people to support you, it you gotta have this brand that people can relate to. Sure. And the best, honestly, one of the best moves I've ever done career and business wise is starting a podcast. I would say the same thing. And we talked about this because it gives you a voice and the amount of support I have now because the podcast, cause if if you tune into a UFC countdown show, a primetime show, um, the clips you see on YouTube of me or a highlight reel or even on UFC tonight. It's a very kind of cocky, confident. Sure.

• 1:05:37Speaker 01

Uh, version of myself, which you're talking weeks before a fight where you have this fighter's mentality. Man, I'm a goofball. Yeah. Uh, I like to inspire people. Smiley. Yeah, smiley. I get along with everyone, but if you just see those clips, people are like, I don't like Sean, man. Cocky asshole. He's probably a bully in high school. Where couldn't be the most opposite thing. Very opposite, yeah. So it gives me this voice and, um, you know, if you do listen to the podcast, if we do start listening to it, my my nickname is Big Brown. Yeah. It's it's Big Brown. And originally, my my name for several years was The Hybrid. So, and the reason it changed is because. Hybrid because you're like a mix between a lot of different. Yes, cause I'm. Yeah, right. You never know what I am. What are you, bro?

• 1:06:19Speaker 01

I could be Mexican. I might be black. No, uh, a hybrid because I'm big, but I have the cardio and skills of a lightweight. So the hybrid of the heavyweights, which is a cool nickname. Yeah. However, on the podcast, my my partner, Brian. Callan actor comedian kept calling me Big Brown because he goes you're big you're brown

• 1:06:34Speaker 01

you're definitely Apache Indian you're definitely not white yeah so um and he would keep calling me and people and people I post on Instagram would put you know hashtag team hybrid and it would get 70 comments people like no you're Big Brown like dang man these people really like Big Brown so on the podcast a week before my fight um I did a podcast right the I fought on Saturday that Tuesday I did a podcast and I said all right if you think I should change my name to Big Brown if you tweet at Dana White at Bruce Buffer at UFC and I get a certain amount I'll change it and I'm thinking you know

• 1:07:09Lewis Howes?

  As like a UFC fighter?

• 1:07:10Speaker 01

As a UFC fighter I will change my name I will change it

• 1:07:14Lewis Howes?

  Big Brown

• 1:07:14Speaker 01

Yes if you guys requested so much if the fans demand I will change it and we had over 4,500 tweets towards Bruce Buffer and Dana White I had to change my name so he announced me

• 1:07:24Lewis Howes?

  Cause Dana White was like

• 1:07:25Speaker 01

Big Brown shop yeah Bruce Buffer came up to me Bruce Buffer came up to me he's like bro I've been in the UFC for how long he goes I've never had more outreach than your fans tell me to announce you as Big Brown so like damn this is really happening so now it's official Brendan Big Brown shop and it's on all the UFC stuff now Big Brown

• 1:07:44Lewis Howes?

  That's pretty cool

• 1:07:44Speaker 01

It's cool right it's cool you can't choose your nickname you have to be given a nickname don't you think I would pick something badass like Brendan the Dark Knight yeah something like evil like yeah yeah Brendan the badass or something like that the handsome one or some shit like that

• 1:08:01Lewis Howes?

I like uh man what was this one kid from Ohio I watched the fight I think it was like five years ago it was like something heavy hands or no what was it it was like uh the hammer

• 1:08:10Speaker 01

That yeah there's the hammer Matt Hamel

• 1:08:12Lewis Howes?

That guy's awesome because he's like half deaf right oh I was like I love it

• 1:08:16Speaker 01

I'll tell you what Ohio has some good good fighters really good fighters Rich Franklin Matt Hamel you got some monsters

• 1:08:21Lewis Howes?

Well I always go to the Arnold Classic and all the UFC guys would be there I grew up a few blocks from where they have the Arnold Classic and I'd always see Rich Franklin and those guys there

• 1:08:31Speaker 01

  Great guys

• 1:08:31Lewis Howes?

It's awesome but um dang this is amazing stuff I love this shit

• 1:08:36Speaker 01

  I love this

• 1:08:37Lewis Howes?

What uh why do you think you've become so popular like why do you think so many fans have been like yeah are just behind you for changing your name or just whatever it is you know what is it about you?

• 1:08:47Speaker 01

Yeah I think it's because um a lot of people can relate to me listen I I uh I talked about this on the podcast and um I'm just real, man. It's hard for me to be fake and a lot of time it gets me in a lot of trouble. Yeah, cause you're real. Yeah, I'm real and I say what I want to say and it's hard for me to sugarcoat and I can't be fake. Like if you and I butted heads, 100% you'd know on this podcast and everyone would know. You're an idiot, bro. Everyone would know. I'm just not good at it. Yeah. That's a good and bad thing. When you have a voice and you have a live show and you're on the mic. Listen, I've been muted by the UFC a couple of times for stuff I've said for sure, man. With like, you gotta cut this out, man. You have, there's certain stuff you should not be saying.

• 1:09:30Speaker 01

And I get it. I get it. But the reason why people relate to me is because I'm real. I have insecurities about my body. I didn't grow up, most people, especially as a fighter, you have to come from this broken home and your dad beat you or you had no money, stuff, food stamps, stuff like that. Nah, man, I grew up blue collar. I had a dream. I worked my fricking tail off for it. And I'm still working my tail off and it's worked out. I'm just your average dude who's 6'4", 245 pounds. However. And very athletic, former Pro Bowl player. But still, but still, there's, there's guys way more athletic than me who haven't, aren't doing much with it. You've developed your skills. You've got a good amount of talent, but there's guys a lot more talented who do not.

• 1:10:11Speaker 01

Way more talented, way more talented. I'm that, I'm that kid who, you know, I really never, I stuck out in sports in high school. Well, I never really, I wasn't that freak. I wasn't that LeBron James. So when we were picking teams, I was never first. I was like the middle kid, the white kid who had a dream, who had an older brother who whipped his ass all the time. Grew up super tough and driven. That's all it is, man. Most people think you have to have this crazy background. It's because you're hearing the exception to the people who have made it. The LeBron James, the Oprah Winfrees, the Tyler Perrys, whatever. Those are the exceptions where these crazy, crazy stories. Nah, man, there's a ton of successful people out there who grew up in normal homes. There's no drama. They, you know, just a middle-class family.

• 1:10:54Speaker 01

Had a dream and you fricking ran with it, man. And that shit is inspiring. And that's why people jump on board the big brown train. The big brown train, baby. I want to get on the big brown train. It just sounds fun, you know? Where's it taking me? It's a beast. You never know. You never know.

• 1:11:10Lewis Howes?

Okay, uh, point number thirteen, we're both six four, over two hundred twenty pounds, two twenty-five.

• 1:11:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:17Lewis Howes?

Uh, the point number thirteen, we, I don't know if you still drive a Prius, but we've both driven a Prius.

• 1:11:21Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:11:22Lewis Howes?

I saw a video you said you'd drive your Prius.

• 1:11:24Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, I still have it. I still, I didn't drive it today, built my other car today, but um, I have a Prius and that thing bums me out, man.

• 1:11:32Lewis Howes?

Dude, I had it for the first six months when I moved here and I'm just like a hunchback, like it's so tiny.

• 1:11:36Speaker 01

It's tiny and I feel like it's unsafe. I feel like it's poorly made.

• 1:11:40Lewis Howes?

I can push in the door, like the metal just goes in.

• 1:11:43Speaker 01

For sure. Nothing makes me more excited to wake up on Monday morning, kick the shit out of the breeze. I'm just like, forget this thing. Um, listen, I bought it because I drive six hundred miles a week in training camp.

• 1:11:54Lewis Howes?

Training, you're just going all over the city, right?

• 1:11:55Speaker 01

Orange County, LA, all over the valley. So it makes sense. However, I don't know, man.

• 1:12:00Lewis Howes?

You never fill it up. It's like you never have to fill it up.

• 1:12:02Speaker 01

Yeah, which is great, but it's just a piece of crap. It's just poorly made and there's, they're a dime a dozen and

• 1:12:10Lewis Howes?

  Everyone's got one.

• 1:12:11Speaker 01

Everyone has one and I don't know, I hate it. I hate it. I know.

• 1:12:15Lewis Howes?

  Interesting.

• 1:12:15Speaker 01

I still have it. I use it. Gas friendly, whatever, whatever. If someone's looking for a Prius, hit me up. Or if you just want to kick the shit out of them, want to feel good, let some stress out, hit me up as well.

• 1:12:27Lewis Howes?

Point number fourteen, we both moved to LA and live near the beach.

• 1:12:30Speaker 01

Yes, this is correct. I live in Marina Del Rey, near Santa Monica.

• 1:12:34Lewis Howes?

I'm only here for a little bit. I'm going back to West Hollywood soon, but

• 1:12:36Speaker 01

West Hollywood, huh? You like it there?

• 1:12:38Lewis Howes?

I like being, you know what? I feel like I can train like a beast there. Like I go to CrossFit, I go to kickboxing, I run through like the hills. I played street basketball there.

• 1:12:47Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:12:47Lewis Howes?

It's like, I feel like an athlete and I'm getting things done in my business. Here, I just want to go to the beach.

• 1:12:52Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:12:53Lewis Howes?

And like chill. It's like, I'm going to go work out and I'll run down there and I'm like, all right, what's up guys?

• 1:12:57Speaker 01

Yeah, I get that. That makes sense because most of my training, it, you obviously it's not on the beach. I wish, I'll run on the beach, which is dope. Because it, you don't have to think about running, you're just running and there's the beach and ocean, all that. So um, I get that, but see my, when, when I'm uh,

• 1:13:12Lewis Howes?

And maybe since I've just been here for

• 1:13:14Speaker 01

  When I'm driving all around.

• 1:13:15Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:15Speaker 01

Yeah, um, it's the same, you know, so this is my escape. When I come home, it's like, oh, thank God, this is dope.

• 1:13:21Lewis Howes?

And maybe it's because I know I'm only here for a couple of months, so I'm kind of like, it's like a vacation.

• 1:13:25Speaker 01

For you, you're on a long extended vacation.

• 1:13:27Lewis Howes?

And I don't know when our next tournament is with the USA national team. So I'm kind of like, I don't know when I'm gonna get ready for something.

• 1:13:33Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 1:13:33Lewis Howes?

  Kind of maintaining and like.

• 1:13:34Speaker 01

I get that. Good for you. It's a good time, man.

• 1:13:37Lewis Howes?

Yeah, it's cool. But I feel like I'm not.

• 1:13:38Speaker 01

Got a girlfriend, living on the beach.

• 1:13:40Lewis Howes?

  Tough life.

• 1:13:43Speaker 01

  Someone has to do it.

• 1:13:45Lewis Howes?

Okay, so point number fifteen, and this is the final one that I found. Oh, I'm sure there's probably more. We both have our own podcast, which we already talked about. Yours is called The Fighter and the Kid. I watched one episode. I was laughing my ass off.

• 1:13:57Speaker 01

  It's ridiculous, right?

• 1:13:58Lewis Howes?

So I highly recommend you guys go subscribe right now on iTunes, SoundCloud, Stitcher. There's a video podcast as well as audio. The Fighter and the Kid with, who's your co-host?

• 1:14:09Speaker 01

Brian Callen. And you guys might know him from The Hangover. He's, his name's Eddie. You might know him from The Hang, he was on Mad TV, The Hangover, Sex and the City. He's the guy in The Hangover shows, you tell him I say hello. He's the guy that marries him. And the second one, he's the one where they go in the strip club. Yeah, he's that guy.

• 1:14:27Lewis Howes?

  Was he also on?

• 1:14:28Speaker 01

  He's in, uh.

• 1:14:29Lewis Howes?

Was he on Kevin Hart's movies recently?

• 1:14:31Speaker 01

Yes. Yes, he was in Ride Along.

• 1:14:33Lewis Howes?

Was he in Ride Along? There's another movie I thought he was in.

• 1:14:35Speaker 01

Ride Along and then About Last Night.

• 1:14:38Lewis Howes?

  Is that what it was?

• 1:14:38Speaker 01

I've seen About, see, I love romantic comedies.

• 1:14:40Lewis Howes?

  I do too.

• 1:14:41Speaker 01

  Love them.

• 1:14:41Lewis Howes?

  What's your favorite one?

• 1:14:43Speaker 01

Man, About Last Night's up there.

• 1:14:44Lewis Howes?

I was gonna say, Love Actually.

• 1:14:46Speaker 01

  Love Actually's really good.

• 1:14:47Lewis Howes?

  One of my top.

• 1:14:48Speaker 01

I like Friends with Benefits, Love Actually. There's a lot of them, man. He's just not that into you. What?

• 1:14:53Lewis Howes?

  Jesus, dude.

• 1:14:54Speaker 01

Something Borrowed? Come on. What are we doing?

• 1:14:58Lewis Howes?

You didn't have a girl to go watch this with.

• 1:14:59Speaker 01

I know, I, yeah, yeah, there's someone to do it. There's someone to do it.

• 1:15:05Lewis Howes?

So, yeah, definitely go check out the podcast, The Fighter and the Kid. It's been around for a year and a half, you said now.

• 1:15:09Speaker 01

  Year and a half, man.

• 1:15:10Lewis Howes?

  You do it what, weekly?

• 1:15:11Speaker 01

We do it once a week.

• 1:15:12Lewis Howes?

  Once a week.

• 1:15:13Speaker 01

  Once a week.

• 1:15:13Lewis Howes?

  Studio here in LA?

• 1:15:14Speaker 01

We do it at Fox Sports.

• 1:15:16Lewis Howes?

  Where is that?

• 1:15:17Speaker 01

Fox Sports is, uh, the studio we do is in Playa Vista, so close to Marina Del Rey, right, real close.

• 1:15:23Lewis Howes?

  Cool.

• 1:15:23Speaker 01

Do you know where the YouTube offices are at?

• 1:15:25Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:25Speaker 01

It's across the street from there.

• 1:15:26Lewis Howes?

  Interesting.

• 1:15:27Speaker 01

  Yeah, man.

• 1:15:27Lewis Howes?

Yeah, nice little studio. It's a good little setup. I'm thinking about doing video now after just seeing so many of our friends doing it.

• 1:15:31Speaker 01

It's weird, man. Our, our video, uh, me and Brian, you know, obviously Brian's an actor, comedian, so we're both very animated and if you look at. Cause we're super goofy, like. I don't, the podcast, when people listen to it once, they're kind of like, yeah, I'm in, man. Because with other podcasts, you're gonna learn, you know, a little, your stuff, you know, I've been listening to yours. Yours, you're definitely gonna learn some key life lessons.

• 1:15:53Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:53Speaker 01

On ours, you're gonna learn some stuff, but you're gonna feel like you're one of the guys. You're gonna feel like you're one of the guys or one of the girls in our circle of trust.

• 1:16:00Lewis Howes?

  Yeah, that's cool.

• 1:16:01Speaker 01

We say some ridiculous stuff. We have fan questions.

• 1:16:03Lewis Howes?

  That's cool.

• 1:16:04Speaker 01

  Uh, yeah, it's different, man.

• 1:16:05Lewis Howes?

I like it, man. Um, I feel like I could talk on for another hour, but I want to just get to a couple last questions.

• 1:16:10Speaker 01

  Let's do this.

• 1:16:11Lewis Howes?

I want to know about the moments before the big fights.

• 1:16:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:16Lewis Howes?

  And your ritual.

• 1:16:17Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:16:18Lewis Howes?

I want to know about, again, I know you said you were like terrified and you're scared and things like that.

• 1:16:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:21Lewis Howes?

What is like the mindset? Do you have a mantra? Do you go through a meditation process? Do you have like, do you write? What do you visualize? Are you visualizing like the results you want? Or just kind of like blank mind, let's do this. Like what is your process?

• 1:16:34Speaker 01

Yeah, my, my thing is, is, uh, I, I don't want to get in my own way. I don't want to be my worst enemy, which is in fighting is the number one key. Because you're gonna go in there and there's gonna be a sense of fear and, and fear can motivate you or it's gonna, it's gonna paralyze you. And for me, it's, I, I just keep reminding myself like, there's nothing more you can do. No one trains hard on me. There's just not, I don't care who you are. You can tweet Kane Velasquez, you can tweet Verbees, Silver Doom, whoever you want, whoever you want. I guarantee you they don't train as hard as I do. So for me, I get my confidence from that. So when I get to the back of the locker room, I'm just, I'm breathing. I'm like, dude, you do this every single day. This is what you do. It's no different. Just go perform. Winning will take care of itself.

• 1:17:19Speaker 01

Though you, you can't, there's nothing, I can't, I can't focus on what he's gonna do. I just, I, I just can't, I have no idea what he's gonna do. You just gotta go and do your thing. You have to have this, this trust. Yeah, you're gonna be scared. And I'm at that moment now where I know those feelings and those butterflies. And it's about getting these butterflies, which are all over the place and getting them to come together and in a right direction. Because if you let those butterflies go all crazy, you're gonna mess up, man. I've been there. It took two hard, hard losses to learn that you can't fight like that.

• 1:17:49Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 1:17:49Speaker 01

Like I'd just fight. Radically and try and get in and out there. And this is tough to say.

• 1:17:54Lewis Howes?

  You lost those.

• 1:17:55Speaker 01

I lost those. Yeah, because at the heavyweight division and fighting at a world-class level, if you go in there and you're fighting erratically, you're gonna get clipped, man. You're gonna lose that fight. And I lost two very big fights that way. And since then.

• 1:18:05Lewis Howes?

  You got knocked out or?

• 1:18:06Speaker 01

Yeah, knocked out. And since then, I've adapted this kind of fighting style where use your abilities. My, when I go in there and I just stand toe to toe and I swing with the guy, it's fifty fifty. Why even train for, why, to me, it's like, why even train for that? That's like having this Formula One race car and putting the driver in and you have a game plan and he's just like, nah, man, puts in six gear and floors it and you're gonna lose every time. You're gonna peel out and run into the wall. And that's what we were doing. So now, you know, I made the move to LA and for me, it's about using my tools and I think those are gonna be tough for anyone in the world to beat, but in order to use those tools, I have to get out of my own way. I have to get out of my own way. You're gonna have these negative thoughts and it's about having these negative thoughts. Soon as I have one, nip it in the butt and be like, nah, man, you've trained too hard to act like this.

• 1:18:51Speaker 01

You trained way too hard to act like this. So it's, it's just, I'm motivated by fear. Like, every morning I wake up and it's just like, dang, man, what, we gotta go, we gotta get going. And I just feel like I'm gonna lose it all. Every single day, I feel like tomorrow I'm gonna lose it all. That's what I feel like.

• 1:19:07Lewis Howes?

You're motivated to not lose it?

• 1:19:09Speaker 01

To not lose it, but I haven't done anything. I really, I feel like I haven't done anything.

• 1:19:12Lewis Howes?

  You haven't won a championship.

• 1:19:14Speaker 01

Like, like, like, we thought, like, you, like, you tweeted out and I text you, I don't even know you, right? I barely know you. You tweet out on Twitter, the champ is here, Brendan Schaub, let me know if you have questions. I text you, hey, bro, just doing your solid. I'm not the champ. I appreciate it, I'm not the champ, but you're gonna take some heat from the UFC, you know, from UFC fans, you know, like, oh, Schaub's not the champ, blah, blah. For, for me, it's like, I don't deserve that, that credit yet. Like, man, I've, I've done nothing to be regarded as the champ, you know?

• 1:19:41Lewis Howes?

  Right.

• 1:19:42Speaker 01

And I'm, I'm, I'm very, I'm very sensitive to stuff like that. Like, I was the kid when I came on to the University of Colorado, as soon as you walk, as soon as you walk into the locker room, they give you a stack of gear, issued gear. University of Colorado Buffalo football gear, all sorts of cool stuff.

• 1:20:00Lewis Howes?

Must be one of the coolest feelings.

• 1:20:02Speaker 01

Well, you would think, right? To me, everyone put it on. I didn't. I put it in my bag and walked to my dorm. And I was like, I just don't deserve to wear this right now. I'm gonna hold off until I actually contribute to the team before I wear any of this. I was one of the only kids. You would walk around and kids would wear it, so they stuck out and would get girls. And I was, I'd be embarrassed. I haven't done anything. So until I played, I didn't wear anything.

• 1:20:24Lewis Howes?

  Wow, that's cool.

• 1:20:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:20:26Lewis Howes?

Wow, man, this is fascinating. I love this stuff. Well, I've got one question before you left, but I want to make sure everyone goes to at Brendan Schaub.

• 1:20:33Speaker 01

At Brendan Schaub on Twitter and Instagram.

• 1:20:35Lewis Howes?

On Twitter and Instagram. Good stuff, good content, pictures. I'm gonna, I'm gonna videotape this next question. But check him out, The Fighter and the Kid. Make sure to subscribe, even if you're not a UFC fan, it's just fun and entertaining.

• 1:20:47Speaker 01

We really don't talk about fighting.

• 1:20:48Lewis Howes?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So, check it out. His co-host, Brian, is a pretty funny dude, so.

• 1:20:56Lewis Howes?

Hopefully I can have you come back on and talk more about this stuff.

• 1:20:58Speaker 01

Bring it. Yeah, especially we live so close. Even if you're in West Hollywood, it's pretty close. I work out down there.

• 1:21:03Lewis Howes?

Yeah, or if you want to surf, I'm down.

• 1:21:04Speaker 01

  Are you a surfer?

• 1:21:05Lewis Howes?

I mean, I haven't done it in a while, but.

• 1:21:07Speaker 01

I'm a two-stripe white belt at surfing. I'm not good.

• 1:21:10Lewis Howes?

  I'll go hack around.

• 1:21:11Speaker 01

Yeah, I'll go fall in the water. Yeah, I'll tell girls I surf. I have a legit surfboard. I look the part.

• 1:21:17Lewis Howes?

Do you have a big, is it a big like?

• 1:21:19Speaker 01

Big board. It's kind of embarrassing. Dude's like, oh, sweet, man, you paddleboard. I'm like, no, man, it's my surfboard. He's like, oh, cool.

• 1:21:26Lewis Howes?

I need a big board or else I can't get up.

• 1:21:28Speaker 01

I know, man. You can't do anything. It's embarrassing. And then I, when I first got here, I bought a boogie board. Bad luck, man. I guess boogie boarding for the panties.

• 1:21:36Lewis Howes?

  Kneeboard thing, like a little?

• 1:21:37Speaker 01

Like, yeah, like the little thing you're on, like, basically like in 300, uh, lift your shield, bro. Like, it's just, it wasn't good, man. It wasn't good.

• 1:21:45Lewis Howes?

  I'll take that out.

• 1:21:46Speaker 01

I'm telling you, you don't want to be on that thing. Yeah, girls were like, oh my god. Not a good look, man.

• 1:21:52Lewis Howes?

Nice. Well, is, uh, is there anything else we want to direct people or is it all Twitter and Instagram in the main place?

• 1:21:57Speaker 01

Yeah, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, it's all the same. At Brendan Schaub. The podcast is, is The Fighter and the Kid, iTunes, SoundCloud. Can't miss this, man.

• 1:22:05Lewis Howes?

  Awesome, man.

• 1:22:05Speaker 01

  What's this next?

• 1:22:06Lewis Howes?

The final question is what I ask all my guests.

• 1:22:08Speaker 01

  I'm worried about this.

• 1:22:09Lewis Howes?

It's not a big deal, but it's what is your definition of greatness?

• 1:22:12Speaker 01

My definition of greatness is, uh, having failures or getting knocked down and getting back up and being successful. That would be greatness.

• 1:22:22Lewis Howes?

Love it, man. Well, Brendan Schaub, check him out. Watch the next UFC fight whenever we know it is. I'll let you know, man. Yeah, I'll come on here before I fight. Yeah, be awesome. I'll let you know about training camp and... I would love to come watch a workout sometime and just see you like do your thing. You got it, man. You got it. Or even just like work out on the side when you're getting ready. For sure. Yeah. When I'm getting ready. You said you do some kickboxing? I do kickboxing, yeah. I do it at this like, at a CrossFit gym actually, so it's like a small class. It's like a cardio thing? But I want to get into it more where it's like one-on-one. For sure, man. Let me know. I've got all the pads, I've got everything. Yeah, let me know. Yeah, we'll work out together. We'll do some stuff. Yeah, we could do that. Yeah. Have you ever done jiu-jitsu or anything? Rappelling? I've never got any of that. Alright, alright. Have you ever wrestled before or anything? Like sixth grade for like a month. The guys were shooting my knees so easily. You're like, forget this.

• 1:23:07Lewis Howes?

They were shooting my knees so easily. No, we'll do something, man, for sure. We'll get Patrick involved. I'll put on a frickin' headgear and just like, whatever, let you spar me. Yeah, well, I don't think you want that. Yeah, we'll figure it out. You can just tap me. Yeah, just, we'll figure it out. Yeah. Or we can all have pads and just like... That's true, I'll hold pads for it. Yeah, yeah. I'm down. Cool, man. Well, Brendan, I appreciate it, brother. No problem, man. Thanks for coming on and we'll talk to you soon. Yes, sir.
