726 Believing in Yourself with Logan Paul

WHAT YOU SAY TO YOURSELF MATTERS. The more you say things, the more you believe them. You have to tell yourself you will succeed. Write it down every day. Say it looking in the mirror. People may look at you like you’re crazy. But the more you say it, the more they’ll start to believe it, too. You will not get to where you want to go if you don’t believe in yourself. That’s why, for this Five Minute Friday, I’m sharing a conversation I had with Logan Paul whose strong belief in himself started in high school. He is a 23 year-old actor and internet star who started out making videos on Vine and now has an amazing 18.6 million subscribers on YouTube. He also has roles in the films The Thinning and The Space Between Us. Logan says that having specific goals and working harder than everyone else has given him an edge over his peers. This is Five Minute Friday.

• 0:10Lewis Howes?

We've got the one and only Logan Paul. This kid is 20 years old, from Ohio like myself, and he has literally come on the scene with a vengeance and made so many people captivated by his unique talent. And we're gonna dive in and talk about his unique talent today. But for those that don't know who Logan Paul is, he's incredibly popular on Vine with over 9 million followers. Built his following there first, then grew on YouTube and Facebook and now Snapchat. He's one of the most watched people on Facebook last year and has appeared on Law & Order as well as upcoming feature films that are coming out. He's also again from Ohio and he's only 20 years old. That's right.

I think it's important not only to look good, obviously, but something about working out and pushing yourself the way I do is like, it takes you to another level. So when I'm on set and like something's sort of hard-ish.

• 1:10Lewis Howes?

You're like, "I've already been through this every day."

• 1:11Speaker 01

I've been through it every day. Like dude, I was doing the scene in The Thinning where I had to drown. I don't know if you know this, if you breathe in and then try to sink, you don't sink.

• 1:23Lewis Howes?

  You float.

• 1:24Speaker 01

  Yeah, you float.

• 1:25Lewis Howes?

So you have to push all the air out.

• 1:26Speaker 01

You have to push the air out. They put weights on me.

• 1:29Lewis Howes?

  Oh my gosh.

• 1:29Speaker 01

And I'm sinking, so I have no air in my lungs. And it's dude, it's not like a six-foot pool, it's a 12-foot pool.

• 1:34Lewis Howes?

  That's terrifying.

• 1:35Speaker 01

  Dude, it was...

• 1:36Lewis Howes?

  That's so scary.

• 1:37Speaker 01

It was one of the hardest things I've ever done. And I'm like, "I'm very mentally strong, man." But during this, I'm like, "Why is this so hard for me?"

• 1:45Lewis Howes?

  It's challenging, man.

• 1:45Speaker 01

It's all a mental thing, but like, again, it's just like, I'm used to pushing myself, so I was able to do it, but it was just difficult.

• 1:52Lewis Howes?

I can imagine. But most people who aren't athletes and don't go through the daily pain and stress that we've gone through, they can't handle that.

• 2:00Speaker 01

Dude, it's like, I... Yeah, that's what like, you know.

• 2:03Lewis Howes?

Even we, you know, you couldn't handle it already going through it, but it was like even more challenging.

• 2:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:07Lewis Howes?

I thought you felt that gives you an edge being an athlete or being.

• 2:09Speaker 01

One hundred percent. So yeah, another thing they um, yeah. No, this was for a fight scene.

• 2:14Lewis Howes?

  Okay.

• 2:14Speaker 01

And uh, they're like, alright, like, let's see what you got and.

• 2:17Lewis Howes?

  You're like, I know karate.

• 2:18Speaker 01

Yeah, my, well, my character doesn't throw any punches. They, well, they wanted to make him not throw any punches. It's all like knees or like kicks or takedowns. And so I wrestled and I did MMA for four years. So I did it. And again, it's just like, they let me do all the fight scenes, which is awesome.

• 2:33Lewis Howes?

  Amazing.

• 2:34Speaker 01

And then to answer your question furthermore, this is one I think is so important. So every day I wake up, I look myself in the mirror and I say, I will be the biggest entertainer in the world. And I say that 10 times in the morning and I say it 10 times at night, right before I go to bed. Every single day. Read this book, The Secret, and it's all about this. I mean, you know, I'm sure you've read it.

• 2:57Lewis Howes?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:57Speaker 01

Like, I will, I will, this will happen. I'm going to. And the more you say it, the more you believe it. And I'm, and I do believe it. Like, I'm one hu- one hundred percent invested in my goal of being the biggest entertainer in the world and nothing will stop me from getting there. Not, not a girl, not, not friends who might be a distraction. Like, that's my goal and I make sure to do that every single day. And then even like, even like when I say it now and I, when I say it in front of people, they're like, like, come on, this guy, he's a Vine star right now. Like, I don't care. This is great. I'm 20 years old, dude. In two years.

• 3:31Lewis Howes?

  To start.

• 3:31Speaker 01

No one's gonna know me as a Vine star. But when you say it, when you tell people, I'm gonna be the biggest entertainer in the world, they like, in the back of their minds, they're always like, come on, like, but the more you say it, the more you believe it.

• 3:43Lewis Howes?

  Mm-hmm.

• 3:43Speaker 01

And the more you get used to saying it, the more other people are like.

• 3:46Lewis Howes?

  You're attracting.

• 3:48Speaker 01

Homeboy means it. Homeboy means it. So.

• 3:50Lewis Howes?

  That's great.

• 3:51Speaker 01

Yeah, those are like the two.

• 3:52Lewis Howes?

So you read the speak, The Secret and you started doing that after reading that?

• 3:56Speaker 01

So I read like a little bit. I think it might've been actually an audi- audiobook. I've read like enough to get that.

• 4:02Lewis Howes?

  Concept.

• 4:03Speaker 01

  Yes, and then.

• 4:04Lewis Howes?

  Just started practicing.

• 4:04Speaker 01

Just started doing it. Cause in high school. Believe it or not, I did the same thing.

• 4:09Lewis Howes?

  Wow.

• 4:09Speaker 01

It was, I will be more successful than anyone I know. Whatever that means. I will be more successful than anyone I know.

• 4:17Lewis Howes?

  Hmm.

• 4:17Speaker 01

And now, I am, like, I know it sounds bad, but there's not another kid from my high school or that I knew.

• 4:24Lewis Howes?

  Right, right, growing up, yeah.

• 4:25Speaker 01

Yeah, that is like, doing the stuff I'm doing now, and like, it's super cocky, but like, my goal is always like, hey, I need to make this happen, and I want to be successful, I just want to accomplish my goals.

• 4:35Lewis Howes?

You're not gonna be successful not believing in yourself.

• 4:37Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 4:38Lewis Howes?

You gotta have such belief and certainty that it's going to happen, otherwise, you're gonna falter somewhere. Writing down every single day what you will create that day, what you're going to become in your life, looking in the mirror, saying these things.

• 4:51Speaker 01

So important, man, and like, it's, you're gonna feel dumb doing it, but eventually you'll stop feeling dumb, and you'll, you look at yourself, and you're like, wow, I believe this. And then it's like, wow, this is gonna happen.

• 5:03Lewis Howes?

  It's cer- certainty and belief.

• 5:04Speaker 01

  Belief, belief.

• 5:05Lewis Howes?

  Belief.

• 5:05Speaker 01

Believe it, dude, that's why, my friends, and I joke about it, that's why I like rappers, who like, aren't even in the, in the game yet, like, I have a couple friend rappers, they all rap like they have a million dollars, two million dollars, three million dollars, crazy cars, girls everywhere, like, they don't, but they rap like they do, and they believe it, and that's the life they want, and then it happens.

• 5:25Lewis Howes?

It's gonna start attracting and happen, yeah. What are things that you do, that are non-negotiable for you, that you must do, working out, looking in the mirror, saying that you'll be the best entertainer, the biggest entertainer in the world? Uh, is there anything else you do that you feel like has been crucial to your success, or that's really separated you from all your peers doing this?

• 5:44Speaker 01

This is the cliche answer, but again, you need to hear something like seven to forty times, actually start believing it. You gotta work harder than anybody else, dude, like, I, when I work out, I work out at night, so I won't go to the LA parties, those poppin' LA parties in the clubs and everything.

• 5:57Lewis Howes?

I don't go to clubs, I don't drink alcohol, I've never been drunk.

• 5:59Speaker 01

  Me, you've never been drunk?

• 6:01Lewis Howes?

  Never been drunk.

• 6:01Speaker 01

  Good for you.

• 6:02Lewis Howes?

I am so committed to working harder, to working at night when everyone's partying, like, it sounds like what you do as well. Working out at night, whatever it takes, man.

• 6:10Speaker 01

  Dude, that's awesome. That's great.

• 6:12Lewis Howes?

So you don't go to the parties, you're not in that?

• 6:14Speaker 01

  Don't go, don't, don't drink, don't smoke, don't do any of that.

• 6:16Lewis Howes?

  That's great.

• 6:17Speaker 01

And work out at night. Like, I'll, I'll, I'll go maybe on a Saturday or Sunday, just because I like being social. And I'm not like, and especially as an actor, I feel like it's important for me to just learn and see and

• 6:27Lewis Howes?

  Of course.

• 6:28Speaker 01

Observe everything. But yeah, I work out at night, so I'm not distracted by the LA parties.

• 6:33Lewis Howes?

Dude, I'll have to come and join you one night.

• 6:35Speaker 01

  Dude, seriously.

• 6:35Lewis Howes?

  We're both working out.

• 6:36Speaker 01

Seriously, let's do it, let's do it, dude. But yeah, it's so important to work, to work hard.

• 6:41Lewis Howes?

  Yeah.

• 6:41Speaker 01

  And that goes-

• 6:42Lewis Howes?

And consistently doing that moment, right?

• 6:43Speaker 01

  Throughout the day, yeah.
