Second Drink: Lecture Circuit, Pt 1

This week we’re breaking down the first part of Lecture Circuit! To help improve sales across all Dunder Mifflin branches, Michael and Pam travel to different branches and attempt to give lectures. Meanwhile, Jim and Dwight have taken over the Party Planning Committee and do their best to make Kelly happy after forgetting her birthday. The ladies talk precision driving vs fakey driving, Jenna points out suitcase acting and Angela does a deep dive on the candy, Mounds Bars. This ep is so good, you’re going to half-heartedly throw candy in the air and drone, “It is your birthday.” Office Ladies Website - Submit a fan question:https://officeladies.com/submitaquestion Follow Us on Instagram:OfficeLadiesPod https://www.instagram.com/officeladiespod/ Follow Us on YouTube https://youtube.com/@officeladiespod?si=D0oKJwFJuK9txzFM Follow Us on TikTok https://www.tiktok.com/@officeladiespod?_t=ZT-8y1gqTrJyOs&_r=1

Welcome back to our second drink of lecture circuit, part one. I'm going to start with this fan question from Melinda D. in Austin, Texas. "Hi ladies, I love the opening scene where Michael is on the intercom saying ridiculous things. Were there any candy bag alts for this? Thanks, love the podcast." Okay, so Melinda, I love this cold open too, and Jim has that great line that sets it up where he says, "This morning, the phone guy comes in and he shows Michael that the phones have a PA function." And then he just left.

• 0:34Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 0:37Speaker 01

And then Michael does all these silly bits over the PA, and it's so annoying to everyone who's trying to get their work done. And Angela, I remember we got a question in our original breakdown, asking if any of it was improvised, but I don't think we dug into the candy bag alts for this.

• 0:52Speaker 00

No, lady, we did not. We had read the shooting draft script, so we referenced that. But Melinda, thanks for writing in because it sent me into the candy bag. There was so much fun stuff there. Are you ready? Here are extra bits they wrote for Michael.

• 1:06Speaker 01

Oh, my gosh. They must have had so much fun with this.

• 1:09Speaker 00

Right? Okay, so this is all over the intercom thingy, right?

• 1:12Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:13Speaker 00

So it's all voiceover. Michael would have said, "Attention, Dunder Mifflin shoppers, sale on female secretaries, aisle one."

• 1:24Speaker 00

  Or,

• 1:26Speaker 00

  "Stanley, Toby, Kevin."

• 1:32Speaker 01

Those are good fart sounds, lady.

• 1:34Speaker 00

  Thank you.

• 1:36Speaker 00

"Please rise for the pledge of allegiance." "Get out! The call is coming from the inside of the house!"

• 1:47Speaker 00

And then for the part where Michael is talking on his cellphone, and he doesn't realize that the PA is still on, here was an alt for that. "No, the mole hasn't changed in size or shape, but it's moved from my front to my back. I circled the mole with the marker, but now I can't tell what's marker and what's mole."

• 2:07Speaker 01

  That is ridiculous.

• 2:09Speaker 00

  I know.

• 2:12Speaker 01

Well, lady, we also got a fan mail flurry for this episode.

• 2:16Speaker 00

Was it about how much everyone loves the "It is your birthday party decorating skills"?

• 2:21Speaker 01

Close. It's in that scene. It actually has to do with our breakdown of the episode. I guess I thought that Dwight hung up the sad balloons and streamers with clear tape, and you very passionately said, "No, it was masking tape", and then you pulled out your laptop and you showed me, and you were correct. It's masking tape, but the flurry was because I guess you kept saying maskin-tape? Instead of masking tape? And Ashley R., Emily L., Christie C., Lindsay P., Stephen C., and Stacy R. All pointed it out and asked, "How in the world did I not catch that in the moment?"

• 3:02Speaker 00

  I say maskin-tape?

• 3:04Speaker 01

According to all of these people.

• 3:07Speaker 00

  And it's masking?

• 3:11Speaker 01

I think it's somewhere in the middle.

• 3:15Speaker 00

All right, all right, you guys. I'll try to say it correctly.

• 3:18Speaker 01

You say it how you want, lady.

• 3:21Speaker 00

Well, lady, you got a letter about this particular episode. It was inspired by the line that Pam says as her and Michael begin their lecture circuit. Pam says, "Yeah, I love being on the road, but I especially love the time and a half pay 24 hours a day for three days because I have a mortgage now. Got to bring home the bucks."

• 3:42Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 3:43Speaker 00

  Ready for your letter?

• 3:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:45Speaker 00

It's from Jessica G. from Bethel, Maine. Jessica said, "Jenna," and then in parentheses, and of course Angela, "but this question was more for Jenna. I have listened to your podcast multiple times and listened to your audiobook at least twice now. Crazy to me that when you started your podcast, I was pregnant, and now my baby boy is about to turn six. Anyways, I was dying to know if Jenna ever watched the show Mad About You, and if so, do you remember the episode of season seven, episode 13, where Paul puts down a deposit on a house for a Valentine's Day gift, and Jamie clearly is not impressed? Made me think of your opinion about Jim buying a house for Pam, and when I rewatched the episode of Mad About You,

• 4:30Speaker 00

all I could think about was, ooh, Jenna would not like this episode."

• 4:35Speaker 00

Love you gals and thank you for getting me through my pregnancy COVID, re-listening when my anxiety took over. You guys were a wonderful thing to calm my brain. Take care and thank you for all you do.

• 4:45Speaker 01

Oh my gosh, Jessica, I would probably have the same reaction if I was watching that episode of Mad About You.

• 4:50Speaker 00

I did not remember. I mean, I used to watch Mad About You, but that is so similar. Like he bought a house for Valentine's Day?

• 4:57Speaker 01

Yeah, like I just think that you shouldn't surprise someone with such a large purchase.

• 5:04Speaker 00

It's really a simple sort of like code of like relationship. Maybe, just maybe, if that's how big the price tag is, include me in the conversation.

• 5:16Speaker 01

I'm gonna throw something else at you. Do you ever see like all the super Richie Rich people, they'll like buy their loved one a car as a gift, like a $200,000 Bentley or something?

• 5:30Speaker 00

  That's crazy.

• 5:31Speaker 01

Don't do that either. What if I don't like how it drives? If I haven't test driven something, if I haven't looked at the house and considered the financial impact on our family, don't buy me shit like that. I don't want that.

• 5:46Speaker 00

I'm very short, so I have to sit in it. Can I reach the buttons? You know what I'm saying?

• 5:51Speaker 01

Listen to me. I mean, I'm like, don't buy me a Bentley. Don't buy me a Jaguar. But also, don't. I mean it. Like, I don't want it. I don't want that item. I don't want to be saddled with it. I don't want to drive it. Do I want to park a $200,000 car? You know what? There's probably special parking for that. There's probably a Richie Rich world I don't know about.

• 6:12Speaker 00

I'm gonna stop you right there. You're talking like yacht people talk, and that's not us. You know, bless you if you want all that stuff. That's your business. It's none of my business. But I want you to know this. Look at me right now. Are you looking at me?

• 6:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:27Speaker 00

No one is ever going to buy you a Bentley.

• 6:32Speaker 01

No one's ever gonna buy me a Bentley. I don't have to worry.

• 6:35Speaker 00

You don't have to worry about it.

• 6:38Speaker 01

Okay. What if I get like a superhero movie? It's a huge franchise.

• 6:43Speaker 00

  No.

• 6:43Speaker 01

I'm kicking ass and it makes so much money at the box office that the studio wants to send me a gift.

• 6:50Speaker 00

I'm gonna tell them to call me. Tell them to call me.

• 6:52Speaker 01

Okay. Don't send her a Bentley. You'll tell them.

• 6:55Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 6:56Speaker 01

Thank you. All right. Thanks to everyone who wrote in. And because I love a deep dive, I want to give a shout out to a very fun one in this episode. Angela, you had a great deep dive on the Mount's candy bar and its role in World War II. I still think about it sometimes. It's awesome.

• 7:14Speaker 00

It's so cool. Anyway, all right, everyone. Enjoy your day. And here's our second drink of lecture circuit, part one.

• 7:25Speaker 01

  I'm Jenna Fisher.

• 7:26Speaker 00

  And I'm Angela Kinsey.

• 7:27Speaker 01

We were on The Office together.

• 7:29Speaker 00

  And we're best friends.

• 7:30Speaker 01

And now we're doing the ultimate Office rewatch podcast just for you.

• 7:34Speaker 00

Each week, we will break down an episode of The Office and give exclusive behind the scenes stories that only two people who were there can tell you.

• 7:41Speaker 01

  We're the Office ladies.

• 7:45Speaker 01

Angela just turned out the lights in the studio.

• 7:48Speaker 00

Okay, here's the thing. There's a lot of buttons. This is what I want from a light switch. I want one button. There's four buttons over there.

• 7:56Speaker 01

There's more than four. You guys, it is a complicated light switch.

• 7:59Speaker 00

  Thank you.

• 7:59Speaker 01

But we like to listen to our theme song to get in the mood. So we're listening to it with you.

• 8:04Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 8:05Speaker 01

All during our theme song, Angela is pressing the buttons. The lights are going up, they're going down, they're fading in.

• 8:11Speaker 00

There's track lighting, then there's these other kind of lights.

• 8:13Speaker 01

  Ceiling lights.

• 8:14Speaker 00

Ceiling lights. Then there's four lamps.

• 8:17Speaker 01

We should turn some of the lamps on.

• 8:18Speaker 00

  That might help me.

• 8:19Speaker 01

We need the light because our eyes are fading.

• 8:22Speaker 00

Because I can't see, guys. That's what's happening. But all right, we're here. The lights are on and we are ready.

• 8:29Speaker 01

We are ready for lecture circuit, part one, season five, episode 16, written by Mindy Kaling and directed by Ken Quappus.

• 8:39Speaker 00

  It's an official two parter.

• 8:41Speaker 01

It is, and I've got a whole fast fact about it.

• 8:43Speaker 00

Oh, look how your face just lit up. You're so excited.

• 8:47Speaker 01

I am. Here is your summary. Michael, accompanied by Pam, is embarking on a three-day lecture tour of the nearby Dunder Mifflin branches.

• 8:59Speaker 00

I need to stop you one second.

• 9:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:00Speaker 00

  Three days.

• 9:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:02Speaker 00

Three days Pam is going to be on the road with Michael.

• 9:06Speaker 01

And she's so cheery about it.

• 9:07Speaker 00

  At the beginning.

• 9:10Speaker 01

Well, you know, Michael's branch is outselling all the other branches. David Wallace is perplexed.

• 9:17Speaker 00

  What's that secret sauce?

• 9:19Speaker 01

Please go to the other branches and tell them all about it.

• 9:22Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 9:22Speaker 01

Well, they're going to start in Utica. This is where they're going to run into Karen, and they are met with a surprise.

• 9:29Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 9:31Speaker 01

But back in Scranton, we reveal that Jim and Dwight are now the co-heads of the Party Planning Committee. And they forgot Kelly's birthday.

• 9:42Speaker 00

  And she is ticked off.

• 9:44Speaker 01

Oh, that is an understatement. Meanwhile, Andy has a crush on one of Stanley's clients. Fast fact number one.

• 9:54Speaker 00

  Mm hmm.

• 9:54Speaker 01

Lecture Circuit is a two-part episode. It aired two different weeks, and this is our first episode to ever feature a "to be continued" message, you know, at the end of the episode. But Lecture Circuit was not written as two episodes. It was one script, like your regular 41 pages long. We shot it in five days.

• 10:17Speaker 00

So why did they make it a two-parter, Jenna?

• 10:20Speaker 01

  I will tell you.

• 10:20Speaker 00

  I thought you might.

• 10:22Speaker 01

I was trading emails with Director Ken Quappus. He told me that when they went to assemble it in the editing room, there was so much good stuff. His director's cut was 35 minutes long. He showed it to Greg, and he said, Greg, I can't cut anymore.

• 10:37Speaker 00

That's it. It's got to be 35 minutes, Greg.

• 10:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, make it supersized.

• 10:40Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 10:41Speaker 01

  Or something.

• 10:41Speaker 00

  Something.

• 10:42Speaker 01

Greg said, I agree. We can't lose any of this. Let's turn it into two episodes. And Ken said he was thrilled.

• 10:51Speaker 00

  That's amazing.

• 10:52Speaker 01

  That's how good it was.

• 10:54Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 10:55Speaker 01

Mindy and Ken turned in that good of an episode. Well, fast fact number two, when they broke up the episode into two episodes, they did actually need more storylines to fill out each half. So they knew that the lecture circuit story and the birthday party story would remain in both episodes, but it actually wasn't enough for two complete episodes. So they had to write two more stories.

• 11:21Speaker 00

  And what were those?

• 11:22Speaker 01

I will tell you, for this episode, they added the storyline of Andy wanting to date Stanley's client, Julia.

• 11:30Speaker 00

  Hmm.

• 11:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:31Speaker 00

That makes sense because in the original script, it's not in there at all.

• 11:34Speaker 01

No. And then for the second half, which we will get to next week, they wrote a very interesting storyline for you and your cats.

• 11:42Speaker 00

Oh, yeah. I have stories, guys.

• 11:46Speaker 01

So let's talk about this storyline with Stanley.

• 11:50Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 11:50Speaker 01

And his client, Julia, that they added. The reason that he doesn't meet with his client in the conference room.

• 11:58Speaker 00

  Hmm.

• 11:59Speaker 01

Is because the conference room was busy being a birthday party.

• 12:03Speaker 00

  Sure, it was being decorated.

• 12:05Speaker 01

So they did all of that in the break room. And also that way they could insert it into the episode wherever they wanted, and it wouldn't affect any of the continuity of the other story.

• 12:16Speaker 00

And they could shoot it later because that's what we did.

• 12:18Speaker 01

Yes, we shot these two additional storylines a full month later.

• 12:24Speaker 00

Hmm. That was the crazy thing for me. They were like, okay, you have a whole storyline. It's going to be in lecture circuit. We're shooting it in three weeks.

• 12:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:32Speaker 00

  What?

• 12:32Speaker 01

Because they had to write it.

• 12:33Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 12:34Speaker 01

Should we move on to fast fact number three?

• 12:36Speaker 00

Well, you sound eager. I think we should.

• 12:38Speaker 01

  Well, it's a location breakdown.

• 12:41Speaker 00

  You love a location breakdown.

• 12:42Speaker 01

  I really do.

• 12:43Speaker 00

  I know.

• 12:43Speaker 01

I love knowing where we made this stuff happen.

• 12:47Speaker 00

Yeah. You want to be in the room where it happens.

• 12:50Speaker 01

  Hamilton.

• 12:51Speaker 00

Hey. Room where it happens. I love that.

• 12:54Speaker 01

  I really love that song.

• 12:55Speaker 00

  I do too.

• 12:56Speaker 01

Okay. We had a fan question from Joe S. Jenna, did you and Steve film your scenes in the car in a single day or multiple days? And where did you drive around to film the car scenes? I'll tell you. We shot all of the driving scenes for both Lecture Circuit 1 and Lecture Circuit Part 2 on the same one day.

• 13:20Speaker 00

Oh, wow. So you had a full day in the car?

• 13:22Speaker 01

  Yep, just driving around.

• 13:23Speaker 00

  Just driving around.

• 13:24Speaker 01

  It was Wednesday, November 5.

• 13:26Speaker 00

  Look at you.

• 13:27Speaker 01

Mm-hmm. Someone got the call sheet. And looked at it.

• 13:31Speaker 00

And that someone is Jenna Fisher.

• 13:33Speaker 01

Yes, thanks to James Carey. So here's where we went. We made a loop of three streets in North Hollywood. Nordoff, Satacroy, and Plummer.

• 13:44Speaker 00

  I recognize Satacroy.

• 13:45Speaker 01

Yeah, that's also the street that our sound stages were on.

• 13:49Speaker 00

That's the street we drove on every single day.

• 13:52Speaker 01

  To get to work.

• 13:52Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 13:53Speaker 01

I will tell you, I was not actually driving in these scenes.

• 13:56Speaker 00

  You weren't?

• 13:57Speaker 01

  No.

• 13:58Speaker 00

You did some good fakey driving.

• 13:59Speaker 01

  Thank you so much.

• 14:00Speaker 00

I was gonna ask you if you drove at all.

• 14:03Speaker 01

  I did not.

• 14:03Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 14:04Speaker 01

They had the car loaded onto a rig and it was being pulled by a precision driver.

• 14:08Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 14:09Speaker 01

I'm not much of a precision driver. I wouldn't describe myself that way at all. Precision is not the word I would think of to describe my driving.

• 14:19Speaker 00

Jenna, I've ridden with you in a car.

• 14:20Speaker 01

  I know.

• 14:21Speaker 00

Um, you know, you're a very safe driver.

• 14:24Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 14:26Speaker 00

  But you, um...

• 14:30Speaker 01

  What are you gonna say?

• 14:32Speaker 00

You, I don't know, it's like you grip the wheel with both hands.

• 14:35Speaker 01

  I do, I'm a 10 and 2.

• 14:37Speaker 00

You're a 10 and 2, and then you just kinda, you look straight ahead. And sometimes I'm like, you know, you can go around them, Jenna. There's a whole lane that's empty right next to you. We've been behind Poki Pokerson for like half an hour. 10 and 2, turn a little bit and go around them.

• 14:56Speaker 01

Can I say something right now?

• 14:57Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 14:58Speaker 01

This driving does actually sound very precise.

• 15:02Speaker 00

  Okay, well.

• 15:03Speaker 01

Maybe I am a precision driver and I don't know it.

• 15:07Speaker 00

  You're a slow precision driver.

• 15:13Speaker 00

You're not going to be taking any courses where you're like zipping around any cones. You'll get around.

• 15:18Speaker 01

Are you doing cone courses in your free time?

• 15:22Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 15:23Speaker 01

  Your hobby?

• 15:24Speaker 00

Know this about me? I'm a freaking badass. Like I do, I actually, by the way, I did pull off the road. Like we did all that driving sequence. I was driving when Dwight runs me off the road. That was me. Oh, yeah.

• 15:39Speaker 01

  What do you want?

• 15:40Speaker 00

I want my precision driving trophy. It's a little gold, like, street cone.

• 15:46Speaker 01

All right, I'll find one for you and I will get it for you.

• 15:49Speaker 00

Okay. So anyway, you were not driving, but you shot all in one day.

• 15:54Speaker 01

We shot it all in one day. And then the next day, we shot everything at the Utica branch. And we started with all of the interior scenes. And we shot at this building in Chatsworth, California. It was on Hordoff Street. And we started very early that day. We started 5:30 in the morning.

• 16:12Speaker 00

  That was your call time?

• 16:14Speaker 01

Yeah. And the crew call was 6:30 and the shooting call was 6:45. What that means is that we had the goal of arriving at 5:30, rehearsing at 6:30, and we had to start shooting by 6:45 a.m.

• 16:30Speaker 00

  That's an early day.

• 16:31Speaker 01

And we did it. All right, so before we go to break, lady. I think we should give a little book update.

• 16:40Speaker 00

  Book update, Office BFFs.

• 16:42Speaker 01

Office BFFs is the name of our book that we have been working on for.

• 16:46Speaker 00

  Oh, good Lord, three years.

• 16:48Speaker 01

  Longer than I can imagine.

• 16:50Speaker 00

Oh, my goodness. We've been sharing on our Instagram, like, our journey as we're writing this together. And guess what? Well, you might know if you follow us, we finished our manuscript.

• 16:59Speaker 01

  We turned in our manuscript.

• 17:01Speaker 00

  Someone throw some confetti.

• 17:03Speaker 01

Please, your husband, Josh, did throw confetti when you told him that we had finished. It was so sweet. But now we are in this really fun part where we are going through all of our photos.

• 17:16Speaker 00

  So many photos.

• 17:17Speaker 01

And they're so good because you guys, the reason we wanted to write this book in the first place was because we did this big clean out of our garages and your shed and

• 17:28Speaker 00

  Oh, my gosh.

• 17:28Speaker 01

  My basement.

• 17:29Speaker 00

Basically, it's everywhere we stash stuff.

• 17:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:32Speaker 00

And you know what we found out?

• 17:33Speaker 01

  What did we find?

• 17:34Speaker 00

  We're big stashers.

• 17:36Speaker 01

We did not need to find that out, lady. I think we knew that.

• 17:39Speaker 00

  Oh, my gosh.

• 17:40Speaker 01

But it's true. And we saved everything, every scrap of paper, every ticket stub.

• 17:47Speaker 00

Ticket stub. Here's the other thing, too. Not only do we save everything, but like our family does. I have a whole envelope from my cousin Carol of all of these clippings. Thank you, Carol.

• 18:00Speaker 01

Well, all of this stuff is going in the book.

• 18:03Speaker 00

I don't know that we can put all of it in the book. The book would be like 800 pages.

• 18:07Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 18:07Speaker 00

Some of this stuff is going in the book, but it's all really fun. And you guys, I just am so excited for you to get it and to hold it in your hands and to have it.

• 18:16Speaker 01

Me too. I'm excited to go on our book tour.

• 18:19Speaker 00

  What?

• 18:21Speaker 01

Lady, you know, when your book comes out, you go on a tour and you like sign it and you meet people. We're gonna get to go on like a ladies.

• 18:30Speaker 00

  A road trip.

• 18:31Speaker 01

  A road trip.

• 18:31Speaker 00

I hadn't even thought that far ahead. I'm sorry I'm yelling. I'm so excited. Okay, you know, this has been something I've wanted for a long time, which is a BFF road trip.

• 18:40Speaker 01

  I know it's gonna happen.

• 18:41Speaker 00

Like a real deal road trip where we go to multiple cities.

• 18:44Speaker 01

Well, it's happening. Get ready for it. Office BFFs with all our hoarded stuff and all of our great stories. It's coming your way soon.

• 18:53Speaker 00

Oh, my God. I didn't even think about going on tour.

• 18:56Speaker 01

Well, there you go. There's our book update. Life update.

• 19:01Speaker 00

Hit the road update. Look, I'm already excited. The book is not even done and I'm like planning our road trip. Oh, I have my places I like to stop and snack at.

• 19:11Speaker 01

What are they? Where will I be snacking?

• 19:14Speaker 00

I love a good, like, just greasy burger joint.

• 19:18Speaker 01

  For sure.

• 19:19Speaker 00

  Right?

• 19:19Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 19:19Speaker 00

Also, I love the Frito chili chips, you know?

• 19:24Speaker 01

Oh, really? You're gonna eat Frito chili chips around me?

• 19:28Speaker 00

Everyone says they stink up the room.

• 19:29Speaker 01

  It's so stinky, lady.

• 19:30Speaker 00

  I know, I love them.

• 19:31Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 19:32Speaker 00

They're one of my go-to road trip snacks.

• 19:34Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 19:35Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 19:36Speaker 01

All right, we're gonna go to break now and I'm gonna just try to convince Angela to eat regular Fritos. I love a regular Frito, oh, especially with some queso.

• 19:44Speaker 00

Oh, you know what I love a regular Frito with?

• 19:46Speaker 01

  What?

• 19:46Speaker 00

  A Frito chili pie.

• 19:48Speaker 01

  I'm so hungry now.

• 19:50Speaker 00

  I know.

• 19:50Speaker 01

All right, we'll be back in a second.

• 20:03Speaker 00

We are back, we're in this episode now. Michael, you guys? Oh, my gosh, a phone guy came in to fix his phone and showed him the PA system. You can't show Michael Scott the office PA system?

• 20:15Speaker 01

  You definitely cannot.

• 20:17Speaker 00

He is really goofing about now.

• 20:19Speaker 01

Yeah, he pretends to be a plane captain, a ghost. He forgets the intercom is on while he's talking to his doctor about his mole.

• 20:27Speaker 00

  Buh.

• 20:27Speaker 01

He calls Toby into the principal's office for wetting his bed.

• 20:33Speaker 01

I think we should hear it. Can you play the clip?

• 20:36Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 20:37Speaker 02

This is your captain speaking. The office will be flying at an altitude of two stories. Look out your left-hand window and you will see Vance Refrigeration.

• 20:48Speaker 02

I am the ghost of salesman past. Do not come near me.

• 21:01Speaker 02

Yes, Michael Scott for Dr. Johnson, please. Hello, doctor, I was just following up about my mole again. Now, I was looking online about the nation's sniffs that I have not been squeaking. Oh. Cause I stick it with a pin.

• 21:17Speaker 02

Toby Flenderson to the principal's office. Your mother called and it appears that you wet their bed again. So you have to get home to wash your sheets because they're yellow and they're wet with your urine.

• 21:29Speaker 01

My personal favorite part of that is the coughing. Yes, I loved listening to him cough. It reminded me of the tiramisu coughing fit that he had on the phone with David Wallace.

• 21:39Speaker 00

Steve Krul is a master at fake laughing and fake coughing.

• 21:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 21:44Speaker 00

  You believe it.

• 21:46Speaker 01

We had a fan question from Virginia S. When Michael is on the P A system, were any of his announcements improvised? Or were they all in the script? For example, the announcement that Toby has wet his bed is hilarious.

• 21:59Speaker 00

All right, they had several alts. And the one that was actually in the script for Toby read like this. Toby Flenderson to the principal's office. You are in trouble for sucking.

• 22:12Speaker 01

  That's pretty good.

• 22:13Speaker 00

That's what was in the script.

• 22:15Speaker 01

Well, I read the script while I watched this portion. And I would say that a lot of it was scripted, but Steve definitely did do improvisations off of what was written.

• 22:25Speaker 00

And I'm sure Mindy was pitching things to him too, on the day.

• 22:28Speaker 01

Yes. But I noticed that the line about ghost of Christmas past, that was scripted, but the coughing bit was not in the script.

• 22:36Speaker 00

Um, really quickly. I feel like we need to point out something at 27 seconds.

• 22:42Speaker 01

  What's that?

• 22:43Speaker 00

  What's up with Angela's outfit?

• 22:46Speaker 01

  What is it?

• 22:46Speaker 00

It is a poofy, fluffy sweater.

• 22:50Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 22:51Speaker 00

But it's like poofy, like at the shoulder.

• 22:54Speaker 01

That was really in, and I feel like that's coming back.

• 22:57Speaker 00

  What?

• 22:58Speaker 01

  Like the poofy arms.

• 22:59Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 23:00Speaker 01

We went through a real Shakespeare Renaissance fair thing back then.

• 23:04Speaker 00

  I'm not here for it.

• 23:06Speaker 01

  It's coming back, lady.

• 23:07Speaker 00

  Great.

• 23:08Speaker 01

You know what I found in my closet? How do I describe this? I found a ribbon on a hanger.

• 23:15Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 23:16Speaker 01

And then clipped to the ribbon.

• 23:17Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 23:18Speaker 01

  Were various flowers.

• 23:21Speaker 01

That I could put in my hair or on my lapel.

• 23:24Speaker 00

  You could adorn your outfit.

• 23:26Speaker 01

Like, one of the flowers was like a fabric flower

• 23:30Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:30Speaker 01

that you would clip on your blazer.

• 23:32Speaker 00

  Oh, yeah.

• 23:33Speaker 01

Was that in for a while? Why do I have seven flowers to clip to myself?

• 23:39Speaker 00

I don't know. It feels very much like a Pretty in Pink, kinda like a

• 23:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 23:44Speaker 00

  Molly Ringwald.

• 23:45Speaker 01

  I looked at it.

• 23:46Speaker 00

Put the flower on her hat.

• 23:47Speaker 01

Yeah, it brought back no memories when I looked at it. Two of the flowers were like Hawaiian flowers. I clearly bought them to clip in my hair while on a trip to Hawaii.

• 23:57Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 23:57Speaker 01

But the rest were more casual, more everyday. But I'm gonna clip one on my blazer lapel when we do our book tour.

• 24:07Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 24:08Speaker 01

All right, I'm planting that seed now.

• 24:10Speaker 00

I can't wait. It's gonna make me real happy. What I won't have on our book tour is a poofy sleeve sweater, because at my age, I don't need any extra poofs.

• 24:19Speaker 01

You know what? I'm gonna say you will wear that on our book tour.

• 24:22Speaker 00

  No, don't say that.

• 24:24Speaker 01

Poofy, poofy sweater thing and flower lapel.

• 24:27Speaker 00

Who are we on this book tour?

• 24:29Speaker 01

  I don't know. We're interesting people.

• 24:32Speaker 00

  Well, we'll see.

• 24:34Speaker 01

Not trust well, but interesting. All right, let's get started. This episode opens with Michael exiting a motel room. He knocks on the neighboring door and out comes Pam.

• 24:48Speaker 00

Yes, and in the shooting draft of our script, it says, "Michael knocks on Pam's door. They say, 'Good morning.'" That's it. They don't even have dialogue written out for you guys. You just sort of greet each other. This is not in the script. When Michael knocks, says, "Hello, good morning." Pam says, "Good morning," and then Michael says, "You ready?" And we're off like a herd of turtles. That is not in the script. I think Steve improvised that.

• 25:13Speaker 01

I will tell you, I absolutely loved doing this episode because I got Steve all to myself.

• 25:18Speaker 00

  I bet.

• 25:19Speaker 01

Just scene after scene of me and Steve, and I loved it. Some of my favorite times in the office were when I just got to have days with Steve. Me and Steve.

• 25:29Speaker 00

I know. They were brief and few and far between because you know, Angela Martin hated him. But those were always such a delight.

• 25:36Speaker 01

Well, I love this scene of me putting the luggage into the back of the car.

• 25:40Speaker 00

  I did too.

• 25:41Speaker 01

I'm sorry. I thought I did. I'm going to toot my own horn. I thought my heavy luggage acting was superb.

• 25:47Speaker 00

It was so great that I wrote a question for you. Here's my fan question.

• 25:51Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 25:52Speaker 00

What was in the bag? It looked really heavy.

• 25:54Speaker 01

There was almost nothing in that bag. That was all me. Thank you. I mean, I couldn't be prouder of that.

• 26:03Speaker 00

You know what? I want a cone award for my precision driving. I'm going to get you a little tiny suitcase.

• 26:09Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 26:10Speaker 00

That says great prop work. Prop work award.

• 26:14Speaker 01

I don't know if you noticed, but we got a lot of mail about this car. Adele M. wrote in and said, whose maroon Ford is Pam driving? I thought she had a Yaris and Michael had a PT Cruiser. What is this car?

• 26:28Speaker 00

Exactly. Is it a rental car?

• 26:31Speaker 01

  Listen to this.

• 26:32Speaker 00

  What?

• 26:33Speaker 01

This is a gem from Randy Cordray. He said, in an early concept meeting for this episode, it was discussed that Michael would need extra trunk space for all of his props and his trunk and all that stuff, and that it just wouldn't fit in his PT Cruiser. So they said that they thought it would be funny if Michael had to ask the company to provide him with a Lincoln Town Car that Pam would drive him around in. But corporate would only approve a cheaper Crown Victoria. So this was always intended to be like a scripted moment where we would explain this. But in the end, it never made the shooting draft. So it comes off a bit confusing, but this was like a whole joke.

• 27:17Speaker 00

I love it because Michael thinks he's Carrot Top, right? So he's got to have all of his props and his trunks of crazy gadgets and things.

• 27:27Speaker 01

I mean, I'm surprised he didn't dress in a costume.

• 27:29Speaker 00

I was too, but yet he gives Pam like some sass about her outfit and says, don't you know what a magician's assistant looks like? Um, I Googled magician's assistant costume.

• 27:43Speaker 00

  There's a lot of fishnet. There's some short shorts. There's a bustier. There's a top hat.

• 27:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 27:49Speaker 00

Sometimes a skirt. It's a very sexy looking outfit.

• 27:52Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, Pam wore her tan cardigan.

• 27:56Speaker 00

  It's new.

• 27:59Speaker 01

I, I had such a hard time getting through that line because of course we knew that line was going to be in the script. So when we picked my outfit for this episode, we thought it was very funny that her new cardigan was like beige.

• 28:12Speaker 00

  Was beige.

• 28:15Speaker 01

I have another amazing tidbit about this car before we get on the road. The toboggan?

• 28:21Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 28:21Speaker 01

That's on top of the car? All right. The reason that's there is because there was a scene that was written as a tag for this episode. And the scene was going to be Michael and Pam going down a snowy hill on that toboggan.

• 28:36Speaker 00

Why didn't that happen? I need to see that.

• 28:41Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 28:42Speaker 00

Well, we'd have to go somewhere with snow.

• 28:45Speaker 01

Randy said they went out to scout a snowy mountain. And the photos that they came back with, it just didn't look great. There just wasn't a lot of snow happening at the time that we were shooting this episode. We couldn't go all the way to Mammoth, which is five hours away, right? We had to find someplace that was relatively close and there just was no snow. So we never shot it, but there were two options. One was that Michael was going to be going down the hill on the toboggan. And Pam was just going to be kind of like standing there.

• 29:19Speaker 00

  Hmm. Right.

• 29:20Speaker 01

And the other version is that Pam and Michael are sledding down together. But midway down the hill, Pam falls off and rolls to the bottom and Michael says, again.

• 29:33Speaker 00

Well, maybe I'm glad you didn't have to do that, Jenna Fisher.

• 29:36Speaker 01

No, I so wish I could have gone sledding with Steve. I so wish.

• 29:40Speaker 00

That would have been a blast. Back at Dunder Mifflin, Kelly arrives to work and she is really upset.

• 29:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:48Speaker 00

I would like to note at 4 minutes 10 seconds, there is a big door slam. Guys, that front door did not slam.

• 29:54Speaker 01

  No.

• 29:55Speaker 00

It did not. In fact, it had that little suspension thing, you know? That suspension bracket, so it just would shut like, hee. So, that was added in post.

• 30:06Speaker 01

They had to make it a silent door because a lot of times people would have to enter and we'd be in the middle of a scene and then you would have heard ka-chunk.

• 30:15Speaker 00

  Right.

• 30:16Speaker 01

  So.

• 30:16Speaker 00

It was a hee. Does not slam.

• 30:20Speaker 01

  Right.

• 30:20Speaker 00

But they needed to really sell how mad Kelly was. So they put it in, fakey slam.

• 30:26Speaker 01

Well, Mindy says, screw you to Jim and Dwight. She storms off and then Phyllis explains that Kelly is upset because they forgot her birthday yesterday.

• 30:38Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 30:39Speaker 01

We got a piece of mail.

• 30:41Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 30:41Speaker 01

From Zoe S. Here's what Zoe has to say. In this episode, it's the day after Kelly's birthday. Jim and Dwight forgot. Phyllis knew it was Kelly's birthday yesterday. But Kelly says, nobody wished her a happy birthday. Zoe would like to know, why didn't Phyllis wish Kelly a happy birthday if she knew? I mean, it's one thing that Phyllis wants to make Jim and Dwight look bad, but Phyllis showed some real sass to Kelly on her birthday.

• 31:11Speaker 00

Thank you, Zoe. This is what Angela Martin had to deal with day in and day out. The secret Phyllis sass that people don't see. They just see, oh, nice Phyllis. But there's a deep current of deep, dark, secret Phyllis sass.

• 31:26Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 31:26Speaker 00

  Passive aggressive Phyllis sass.

• 31:29Speaker 01

This leads us into a talking head that I know these two boys loved filming.

• 31:36Speaker 00

Well, they couldn't get through it.

• 31:37Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 31:38Speaker 00

They couldn't get through this whole episode. I'm going to be bringing up some bloopers in a minute. It started with the side by side talking head. And if you read this talking head in the shooting draft, what made it to screen? You can see they were having some fun.

• 31:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:51Speaker 00

They had some improv around what was written. The very top, when Jim says, go ahead, and Dwight goes, no, you go ahead. You do it. And Jim goes, OK. And Dwight goes, I insist. That was all improvised.

• 32:01Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 32:01Speaker 00

Then they get into the part, you know, where they're telling that Angela was blackmailed by Phyllis. That's all scripted. But then Dwight goes, what he said was, and he puts a finger towards Jim's face. And Jim pushes it away and goes, just easy. That's all improv, guys. That's just these two fellows having some fun.

• 32:19Speaker 01

I think I could have told you all that because I know these two so well.

• 32:23Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 32:23Speaker 01

And I know the bits that they would do off camera.

• 32:27Speaker 00

What about the one at the end? That was all improv, too. That whole like, that's on my side. And then Jim's like, so this was fun.

• 32:33Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 32:34Speaker 00

  That's just them playing around.

• 32:35Speaker 01

Yeah, that's their chemistry. Well, after that talking head, we have a Kelly talking head. Where she explains that yesterday was her birthday. Everybody forgot. We see that she got all dressed up. There wasn't a party. This one minute is full of some amazing background catches.

• 32:56Speaker 00

  Oh, let's hear them.

• 32:58Speaker 01

The first one is a fan catch from Ryan W. When they show Kelly all dressed up for her birthday during her talking head. In the background on Dwight's desk, you can see his bobble head from Angela.

• 33:10Speaker 00

  Ooh.

• 33:11Speaker 01

It's back on the desk. I looked at it. Yes, at 5 minutes 10 seconds, bobble head. But also, this is the one I noticed. Creed is milling around in Michael's office.

• 33:26Speaker 00

  What?

• 33:27Speaker 01

Yeah. He's just milling around in there.

• 33:31Speaker 00

  What the heck?

• 33:32Speaker 01

  What's he doing in there?

• 33:33Speaker 00

  I don't know.

• 33:34Speaker 01

I don't either. Those are my background catches.

• 33:38Speaker 00

Those are good catches. Jenna, we all know that Ryan had his list. Remember when he came back?

• 33:44Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 33:44Speaker 00

  He was mad at everyone.

• 33:45Speaker 01

  He kept writing down names.

• 33:46Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 33:46Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 33:47Speaker 00

Did you know that Angela Martin also has her list?

• 33:50Speaker 01

  No.

• 33:51Speaker 00

Uh huh. She calls it her enemy list.

• 33:55Speaker 01

  She's not subtle.

• 33:56Speaker 00

And it all comes up in a scene that was deleted between Jim, Dwight and Angela. She's turning over her party planning committee box of items.

• 34:05Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 34:06Speaker 00

  Here it is.

• 34:08Speaker 00

I reprinted my vendors list for parties. It's a list of birthdays, half birthdays, minutes from past parties, and an enemies list. You're gonna need it. If there's some cat stuff mixed in here, I'd appreciate you returning it to me.

• 34:23Speaker 03

  Of course.

• 34:25Speaker 00

I wish you two the best of luck.

• 34:26Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 34:29Speaker 03

  Angela.

• 34:32Speaker 03

Dwight and I would like to say that we'd be honored if you would stay on as a member of the committee.

• 34:37Speaker 04

And we think you could even run it and take care of everything and we would not get in your way.

• 34:41Speaker 03

Well, that is a great idea.

• 34:43Speaker 00

Nice try. It's your problem now.

• 34:47Speaker 01

I want to say I spit out my coffee when you explained that you had minutes.

• 34:52Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 34:53Speaker 01

  For the parties.

• 34:54Speaker 00

She's documenting everything that happens at these parties. And she has an enemies list.

• 35:00Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 35:01Speaker 00

Oh. I mean, those are scenes I would have loved to seen. Toboggan scene.

• 35:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:06Speaker 00

I would love someone to read the minutes of a party.

• 35:08Speaker 01

Hey, yeah. I agree. Well, back in the car, Pam wants to turn on the radio, but Michael needs silence. Or Sam Kinison in order to prepare. One of those two.

• 35:21Speaker 00

Sam Kinison, comedian that yelled. His whole stand-up routine was yelling.

• 35:25Speaker 01

Yes, he needs one of those two things. But that's okay. Pam's just gonna sing to herself. But then Michael asked Pam if she's nervous about seeing Karen today. He says, is that why you wore makeup today? And Pam's like, what, what? No. I loved that line. I don't know why.

• 35:43Speaker 00

Oh, because it's just one of those statements that completely rattles you.

• 35:48Speaker 01

And also because I have so done that.

• 35:51Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 35:51Speaker 01

I have so zhuzhed up a little extra.

• 35:54Speaker 00

And if someone points it out, then you get embarrassed.

• 35:57Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 35:57Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 35:58Speaker 01

Oh, that was such good writing.

• 36:00Speaker 00

So now we start that storyline that Jenna mentioned that we added to fill out the script. Stanley is going to escort in Julia, his client.

• 36:08Speaker 01

And I want you to notice, they did not use the front door.

• 36:11Speaker 00

No, whoever comes in this way, no one.

• 36:14Speaker 01

And the reason they did that was so that they would not have to pass by the conference room because they didn't know where they were going to put this entrance. And they just didn't want it to mess up whatever Dwight and Jim might have done or not done to the conference room yet.

• 36:28Speaker 00

Yes. So they strategically positioned the camera. So you see them coming in by that door by the file cabinet.

• 36:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:34Speaker 00

The only other time we've seen that door was during the fire drill.

• 36:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 36:37Speaker 00

  Basically.

• 36:38Speaker 01

And I have to tell you, in my mind, I have no idea where that goes. Where does that go? We don't know.

• 36:44Speaker 00

  We don't know.

• 36:45Speaker 01

I know where the front door goes.

• 36:47Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 36:48Speaker 01

There's also that door by the break room.

• 36:50Speaker 00

  Right.

• 36:51Speaker 01

  Where does that go?

• 36:51Speaker 00

Well, we think it goes to the parking lot because Michael and Dwight chased each other, remember?

• 36:55Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 36:56Speaker 00

  Like in Prince Family paper.

• 36:57Speaker 01

I can't put it together in my head.

• 36:59Speaker 00

  I can't.

• 37:00Speaker 01

Because obviously those doors went literally nowhere. They went to snacks backstage is where they went.

• 37:07Speaker 00

But yes, they entered that way so we could place this new storyline anywhere we wanted.

• 37:12Speaker 01

Yes. Andy notices Julia. He is immediately smitten. Does anybody fall in love at first sight more than Andy?

• 37:20Speaker 00

  No, Andy is so.

• 37:21Speaker 01

  Maybe Michael.

• 37:22Speaker 00

Maybe Michael. This might be what they have in common. They fall in love instantly. I mean, Michael fell in love with a chair model. Do you know what I'm saying?

• 37:28Speaker 01

You're right. I'm sorry. It's definitely Michael. Yes.

• 37:31Speaker 00

And Phyllis immediately is like, she's out of your league.

• 37:34Speaker 01

Well, Andy doesn't care that she's out of his league. He is going to go for it.

• 37:39Speaker 00

He has such a great talking head. It was like so well written when he's like, I'm single now and there's an epic showdown between the gnar dog and crippling despair. My gosh.

• 37:50Speaker 01

I know. Well, Jim and Dwight are also going to try and apologize to Kelly. They want to make it up to her. And she does this great passive aggressive thing that we know she doesn't mean, where she says, you know what? All I want is for this to never happen to another person.

• 38:09Speaker 00

  Oh, I know.

• 38:10Speaker 01

  That's what I want.

• 38:11Speaker 00

Oh, I know. Well, they barely got through this scene. I don't know how they have a usable take. And then they continue breaking throughout the whole rest of this script. We got to hear some of these bloopers.

• 38:23Speaker 04

We just wanted to say we're very sorry.

• 38:25Speaker 05

Screw you guys, you're dead to me.

• 38:26Speaker 04

If you say screw you one more time.

• 38:28Speaker 05

  Screw you, beat farmer.

• 38:29Speaker 04

Whoa, okay, guys. I did the face you like. If you say screw you one more time.

• 38:37Speaker 05

  Screw you, beat farmer.

• 38:38Speaker 04

  Guys.

• 38:39Speaker 05

Stop doing that. It makes no sense.

• 38:43Speaker 04

If you say screw you one more time.

• 38:44Speaker 05

  Screw you, beat farmer.

• 38:45Speaker 04

Hey, guys, just cool it. You knew. You knew that one was dead. Basically, the dynamics of. All right. Basically. Within the workplace. There's always a theme, idiot.

• 39:19Speaker 01

Okay, here's what I have to say. I can tell from listening to John laugh that he's crying.

• 39:24Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 39:24Speaker 01

  And he is bent over.

• 39:25Speaker 00

Yes, he's like in full flop.

• 39:27Speaker 01

Yeah, he has lost it. One of the hardest times I ever laughed was doing a scene with Mindy and Rain. Because when you put Mindy and Rain together, nobody is in control. There's no, the two of them are a mess. They're the hardest people to do scenes with. They laugh the most. And when we get to this episode, I'll show you. I hope they have a blooper of it, but it reminded me of that. Well, at the end of the scene, she does say that she would like an ice cream cake.

• 39:57Speaker 00

Were you burping as you said, ice cream? Or did you have a gurgle?

• 40:00Speaker 01

  No.

• 40:00Speaker 00

  What just happened?

• 40:01Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 40:02Speaker 00

  You did this.

• 40:03Speaker 01

  Ice cream cake. I don't know. I didn't burp.

• 40:07Speaker 00

  I know.

• 40:08Speaker 01

Listen, listen, you already outed me for like eating off my shirt. But I don't also like belch, okay?

• 40:16Speaker 00

  It wasn't a burp.

• 40:17Speaker 01

People are like Jenna doesn't wash her hands. She eats off her shirt. I don't need belching as part of my reputation now.

• 40:24Speaker 00

You are the one who shared about the hand washing.

• 40:27Speaker 01

Only at home. I know, but I only don't wash my hands after a tinkle at home. I always wash my hands after a poop. I always wash my hands after I tinkle or poop in public. But somehow I've become the poster child for just never washing hands. And I don't want that on me, okay? That is not who I am.

• 40:48Speaker 00

  That's what she said.

• 40:52Speaker 00

You said, I don't want that on me. I couldn't help it. All right, I think people had forgotten about your hygiene and now you've reminded them.

• 40:58Speaker 01

That's what you think. That's what you think, but they remember everything.

• 41:02Speaker 00

All I was gonna say is I didn't think it was a belch. It sounded like a gurgle. You know how you get a gurgle in your throat?

• 41:08Speaker 01

Yeah, sometimes maybe I needed to take a breath, but I pushed through it. I pushed through to finish my sentence.

• 41:15Speaker 00

  I'm so sorry.

• 41:16Speaker 01

  You know what?

• 41:18Speaker 00

Okay, okay. All right, we're gonna take a break.

• 41:20Speaker 01

Yeah, I'll get plenty of breaths.

• 41:22Speaker 00

  You should take some water.

• 41:23Speaker 01

I'm gonna go wash my hands just to prove that I washed them.

• 41:26Speaker 00

Okay. And then when we come back, we've gotta get into this conference room.

• 41:31Speaker 01

  Oh, it's so good.

• 41:32Speaker 00

And these balloons and streamers. We'll be back.

• 41:35Speaker 01

  We'll be back.

• 41:47Speaker 01

Are you ready for a birthday party?

• 41:49Speaker 00

I am. Is it your birthday?

• 41:51Speaker 01

  It is your birthday.

• 41:52Speaker 00

  It is your birthday.

• 41:53Speaker 01

  Period.

• 41:53Speaker 00

  Period.

• 41:55Speaker 01

All right, we're in the conference room. Dwight has decorated for Kelly's birthday. It is so pitiful.

• 42:01Speaker 00

  It is pitiful.

• 42:03Speaker 01

John is so funny when he enters the conference room. The way he holds the half inflated balloon. Do we need to describe this room, by the way?

• 42:12Speaker 00

Okay, for those of you who haven't seen the episode, I hope you watched it this week with us. Picture a conference table. It is full of half, not even half.

• 42:22Speaker 01

  No, there's like just maybe

• 42:25Speaker 00

  Three breaths.

• 42:27Speaker 01

  Into a balloon.

• 42:28Speaker 00

  That are brown.

• 42:30Speaker 01

  Gray.

• 42:31Speaker 00

  Silver?

• 42:32Speaker 01

I feel like a little silver's in there.

• 42:34Speaker 00

Mm hmm. Some sad, like brown, beige-y streamers.

• 42:39Speaker 01

Dwight has just sort of clipped off and taped to the ceiling.

• 42:43Speaker 00

  With like beige masking tape.

• 42:45Speaker 01

  No, it's regular clear tape.

• 42:46Speaker 00

  No!

• 42:47Speaker 01

  Yeah!

• 42:48Speaker 00

There's masking tape all over the conference room. It is hilarious to me.

• 42:52Speaker 01

  No, it's clear tape.

• 42:53Speaker 00

  No! It's not!

• 42:56Speaker 01

  Oh, no!

• 42:56Speaker 00

This is one of my favorite things about it because have you ever had like that guy that you were friends with in college wrap a gift for you and you're like, what did you use? Electrical tape? What is this? Painter's tape?

• 43:09Speaker 01

  Right.

• 43:10Speaker 00

You had no clear tape? Oh, Jenna, okay, I gotta bring it up. Do we have, oh, I need to bring, Dwight, I have my laptop!

• 43:20Speaker 01

  She got her laptop back.

• 43:21Speaker 00

I got, I got my laptop back. Oscar Nunez.

• 43:25Speaker 01

Long running, long running inside joke on The Office.

• 43:29Speaker 00

Long running inside joke now on Office, ladies. Oh, I can't wait to show you this [BLEEP] looking tape they use to only make it sadder. Okay, where are you? And I have a time code because you know I'm like that. This whole conference room scene with the sad balloons and the sad streamers, it starts at 8 minutes 30 seconds. Oh, I love it so much. Ah ha! Ah ha! Mask and tape!

• 43:59Speaker 01

  Oh my gosh!

• 44:00Speaker 00

Not clear tape! Please look at the shitty mask and tape they use to tape up everything. It is so sad looking.

• 44:10Speaker 01

I am delighted at this detail that I did not notice until doing this podcast.

• 44:15Speaker 00

It's one of my favorite things. I also want to point out at 8 minutes 37 seconds, who do you see over John's shoulder?

• 44:22Speaker 01

Oh, that's you, the whole accounting department.

• 44:24Speaker 00

They had me come out to the copier for this scene and watch it. I'm in the background every time it pans to the bullpen.

• 44:30Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 44:31Speaker 00

Because they sort of thought that Angela Martin would be keeping tabs. What are they doing? How are they planning this party? What are they up to? So I watched these two grown men disintegrate into tears of laughter. I don't know how, again, we got any usable footage. They laughed so hard, Jenna, we had to pause. And this is what Rain said about it. Ready?

• 44:52Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 44:52Speaker 00

In his book, The Bassoon King, this is what he wrote. "The longest inappropriate laughter was during the episode lecture circuit, when Dwight and Jim are put in charge of the party planning committee, and Dwight hangs tiny brown and gray balloons and a banner that reads, 'It is your birthday.' Rain goes on to say, 'John and I literally could not stop laughing. We laughed until we cried. Production needed to be shut down for a 20-minute break while we gathered ourselves, and then we returned to film the scene.'"

• 45:22Speaker 01

Just the way John picks up the sad balloon from the conference room table? I don't know how they spoke after that.

• 45:30Speaker 00

I want to tell you the part I remember them laughing at is Dwight says, "Are you trying to hurt my feelings?" And he throws the balloon, but it didn't have enough weight to travel in the air. And so the balloon with the sad streamer attached is kind of like, "Huh, huh." You're like, in the air, like, huh. But he was trying to throw it at John, and it just wouldn't travel. You can see, I'm going to show you right now, you can see Rain starting to break. Because I think he broke every time. Watch.

• 46:00Speaker 03

What is that? "It is your birthday, period."

• 46:04Speaker 04

  Even a fact.

• 46:05Speaker 03

  Not even an exclamation point?

• 46:06Speaker 04

This is more professional. It's not like she discovered a cure for cancer.

• 46:10Speaker 03

I can't believe how bad this looks.

• 46:13Speaker 04

Are you trying to hurt my feelings? Because if so, you are succeeding. Fortunately, my feelings regenerate at twice the speed of a normal man's.

• 46:21Speaker 01

Oh, the sad balloon is so good. Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh.

• 46:27Speaker 00

So Dwight is annoyed at Jim's reaction to his decorating. And so he's like, wait, have you collected the money? You know, for the cake?

• 46:34Speaker 01

Yeah, and Jim is like, I've only collected $6.

• 46:39Speaker 00

Dwight's like, damn it, Jim, that's what we put in.

• 46:43Speaker 01

  This got me thinking.

• 46:44Speaker 00

  Oh, no.

• 46:45Speaker 01

We are always wondering, where did we get the money for these parties?

• 46:50Speaker 00

There is no way we took a collection for casino night.

• 46:54Speaker 01

Well, no, but for birthday parties, there is clearly a birthday party collection budget. It's very clear that everyone is supposed to give $3. Right?

• 47:06Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 47:06Speaker 01

So I counted. There are 13 people in the office, including Ryan, who's normally in the office. But minus the birthday person, that would be 12 people who contribute for each birthday party. $3 per person is $36. The birthday party budget at Dunder Mifflin is $36.

• 47:28Speaker 00

  Now, I had a gurgle.

• 47:30Speaker 01

  See?

• 47:31Speaker 00

  I had a gurgle.

• 47:32Speaker 01

  Angela just gurgled.

• 47:34Speaker 00

  I had a gurgle. Okay. I don't know.

• 47:36Speaker 01

No, but you just didn't speak for a second because you were gurgling. So you needed air.

• 47:40Speaker 00

Okay, I need to stop drinking fizzy water. This is what it's telling me. Here's the thing. You're saying, how much is the party planning committee budget?

• 47:49Speaker 01

The birthday party budget is $36.

• 47:52Speaker 00

Okay. I think that's true, except there have been episodes where people go to Angela for petty cash. And I think Angela's not helping these guys at all. So maybe like Phyllis, she wants to see them fail. I feel like there's some petty cash for parties, but she's not going to let them in on that.

• 48:09Speaker 01

  That's possible.

• 48:10Speaker 00

  I'm just saying.

• 48:11Speaker 01

I was just following this thread, you know?

• 48:13Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 48:14Speaker 01

And here's where it got me.

• 48:15Speaker 00

Did I take the wind out of your sails a little bit?

• 48:17Speaker 01

No, I mean, take it or leave it. Birthday party budget is $36 or another theory.

• 48:24Speaker 01

  Whatever you want.

• 48:25Speaker 00

I feel like I'm getting some sass.

• 48:27Speaker 01

I'm not giving you any sass.

• 48:28Speaker 00

I feel a little sass. I'm just saying, I think there is some extra cash.

• 48:32Speaker 01

Can I give you a fan question from Preston G?

• 48:35Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 48:36Speaker 01

Preston would like to know, who came up with the "it is your birthday period" slogan?

• 48:41Speaker 00

Oh, Preston, I want to know that, too.

• 48:44Speaker 01

  Mindy.

• 48:44Speaker 00

  Mindy!

• 48:45Speaker 01

  I texted her.

• 48:46Speaker 00

  Ah!

• 48:47Speaker 01

  She said it was her.

• 48:48Speaker 00

  Genius!

• 48:49Speaker 01

  Genius.

• 48:50Speaker 00

  Genius lady.

• 48:52Speaker 01

  So, so good.

• 48:53Speaker 00

Perfect, too. Perfect that that's what Dwight would write. Perfect.

• 48:57Speaker 01

Should we head over to Utica for a second and check in because Pam and Michael have just arrived? They're taking a photo outside of the branch. I guess we're documenting this trip?

• 49:08Speaker 00

Oh, yeah. Are you kidding? I feel like Michael is a scrapbooker.

• 49:12Speaker 01

Yeah. Pam's in charge of all of the bags and taking pictures.

• 49:16Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 49:17Speaker 01

  When they arrive, Rolando...

• 49:20Speaker 00

  Rolando is back!

• 49:22Speaker 01

  Adam Jamal Craig. So good.

• 49:25Speaker 00

Remember, he was in season four in Branch Wars.

• 49:27Speaker 01

Well, he's serving up a bit of sass because he says, "You're late."

• 49:31Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 49:32Speaker 01

A lot of people pointed out that Michael introduces Pam to Rolando, even though we know from Branch Wars that she knows him. And the thing that got cut out was that Rolando and I were supposed to share like a little look.

• 49:49Speaker 00

  Right.

• 49:50Speaker 01

  But it didn't make it.

• 49:51Speaker 00

It so played for me, though, that Michael would forget who Pam knows and doesn't know. And he just doesn't really pay attention to what other people do at his own company.

• 50:02Speaker 01

Oh, totally. This is also when Michael decides to offer Pam a little trick for getting through any nerves she might be feeling about seeing Karen.

• 50:11Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 50:12Speaker 01

She should just picture her naked.

• 50:13Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 50:14Speaker 01

  And then Karen enters.

• 50:16Speaker 00

  A very pregnant Karen.

• 50:18Speaker 01

  Yes!

• 50:19Speaker 00

And then Michael, oh my gosh, Michael.

• 50:22Speaker 01

  It's so good.

• 50:23Speaker 00

  Is it Jim's?

• 50:24Speaker 01

Yeah, and he said, "I'm sorry, I'm sorry. I'm just trying to calculate in my head, when's the last time you had sex with Jim?"

• 50:30Speaker 00

  He said that out loud!

• 50:32Speaker 01

He said, "Was it 10 months ago?"

• 50:33Speaker 00

To two women that... Have dated him, are dating him. Ah, so awkward.

• 50:40Speaker 01

We had a fan question from Mickey S. Was Rashida Jones actually pregnant in this episode? No, that was fakey belly.

• 50:48Speaker 00

  Fakey belly.

• 50:49Speaker 01

Well, they're gonna move into the conference room.

• 50:52Speaker 00

Michael's gonna start his show, but first he has a phone call.

• 50:55Speaker 01

Yes. He has a dramatic phone call and then explains to the group that he just learned his father died.

• 51:04Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 51:05Speaker 01

But then he says, I'm just kidding, but you bought it, you bought it and you can't return it, or can you?

• 51:13Speaker 01

  He got their attention.

• 51:14Speaker 00

What does that have to do with selling paper?

• 51:17Speaker 01

I don't know. But we had a huge fan catch from three people, Rebecca N., Evan H. and Lauren B. all noticed that when Michael takes this pretend phone call, in the background, I clocked it at nine minutes, 39 seconds, you can see Utica's industrial printer is chained with a padlock.

• 51:41Speaker 00

  Oh, no way.

• 51:42Speaker 01

And there is a sign requesting employees to report any suspicious behavior. And this is a callback to the time that Michael and Dwight tried to steal Utica's printer back in Branch Wars.

• 51:56Speaker 00

That's amazing. That is amazing. That is such a small detail.

• 52:00Speaker 01

I know. And it's such a small thing.

• 52:03Speaker 00

Oh, I'm delighted by that. I love that.

• 52:06Speaker 01

  It's amazing.

• 52:07Speaker 00

Well, Karen, she has to say something. Michael's being so ridiculous. And she's like, Michael, this whole sort of shenanigan at the top here just makes us think you're a liar.

• 52:17Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 52:18Speaker 00

And he's like, hold up, would a liar bring mini mounds bars? And then you sadly throw them at everyone.

• 52:25Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 52:26Speaker 00

Jenna, there are a lot of bloopers.

• 52:27Speaker 01

  I.

• 52:28Speaker 00

  Of you doing this.

• 52:29Speaker 01

I know, because every time I did it, I would burst out laughing. And I had many conversations with Ken Quappas and Mindy Kaling about this. I had to sit there for a long time with these mini mounds bars in my hands.

• 52:45Speaker 00

  Hiding them.

• 52:46Speaker 01

Hiding them. And Mindy thought it would be especially funny if I just did it very matter of factly. And of course, it was, and it made us laugh every time. Sometimes I wouldn't even get to the throwing part, just me standing up. We would start laughing. I mean, the mounds bars were getting very melty because I was holding them for so long.

• 53:07Speaker 00

The way you threw them was so awkward. It was unnatural. It hit people.

• 53:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:13Speaker 00

  It's so funny.

• 53:15Speaker 01

Well, Angela, this is also not the first time that Michael has thrown candy at people. He loves to throw candy during a presentation. If you remember in business school, he threw a bunch of candy at the students in Ryan's business school class.

• 53:30Speaker 00

Yes, he loves to use candy to make a point about paper sales. Well, I couldn't resist, Jenna. When I heard mini mounds bars, I had to look up the origin of the mini mounds bar.

• 53:42Speaker 01

Oh, I'm fascinated. I love a mounds bar. I ate many of the mounds bars that day, I should say.

• 53:48Speaker 00

Are you mounds bar or Almond Joy?

• 53:50Speaker 01

  No, no, no, no, no.

• 53:51Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 53:51Speaker 01

Don't throw any nuts in my dark chocolate and coconut treat.

• 53:55Speaker 00

Uh, can we play the jingle, please, that will live in your brain forever?

• 54:02Speaker 00

Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes you don't.

• 54:06Speaker 01

Almond Joy's got nuts. Mounds don't. Sometimes you feel like a nut. Sometimes.

• 54:14Speaker 01

Yeah, I never feel like a nut.

• 54:16Speaker 00

You never feel like a nut?

• 54:17Speaker 01

  No.

• 54:18Speaker 00

I am also a mini mounds bar person. I love the dark chocolate. I love it. But let's start our story, guys. How did we get the mini mounds bar? Our story starts with Peter Paul Halagian. He was a candy manufacturer in New Haven, Connecticut in the early 20th century. He was born in Armenia, and he immigrated to the US in 1890 and opened a candy shop. He would sell candy bars to the US Army, and they would put them in the soldiers' monthly rations during World War I. And then they loved the candy bar so much when they came home, they wanted more. So after the success of that, he teamed with five other Armenian investors to form the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company.

• 55:03Speaker 00

They then made a very smart purchase. They purchased a candy line from candy maker Vincent Natito, who created the original Mounds bar. He was selling it for five cents.

• 55:15Speaker 01

  Oh, full size, five cents?

• 55:18Speaker 00

  They're not very big.

• 55:19Speaker 01

But a full-size bar is two.

• 55:21Speaker 00

  He sold one.

• 55:23Speaker 01

  It was always a mini.

• 55:24Speaker 00

  It was always a mini.

• 55:25Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 55:25Speaker 00

And then Peter Paul actually just started selling it in a pack of two for 10 cents.

• 55:30Speaker 01

I wish you could see Angela's hands right now. I'm showing Mounds bars.

• 55:33Speaker 00

Here, you want to take my pictures?

• 55:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:35Speaker 00

I wanted to show Jenna what it would look like. Too many Mounds bars.

• 55:39Speaker 01

  There it is.

• 55:39Speaker 00

Okay. Well, Jenna, during World War II, the Peter Paul Candy Manufacturing Company was faced with a severe shortage of sugar and coconut, right?

• 55:50Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 55:51Speaker 00

World War II, they had normally been shipped from the Philippines. Then the war broke out. So the company began sourcing coconut from the Caribbean, using its own fleet of small vessels to transport coconut supplies to the US. They were nicknamed the Mounds Flea Fleet. There were about seven ships, small enough to avoid detailed scrutiny by the German naval war vessels.

• 56:15Speaker 01

My gosh, all of this just to get coconut for some candy?

• 56:19Speaker 00

  Wait, it gets better.

• 56:20Speaker 01

I have to say, if you're a ship captain during World War II, are you risking your life to bring people coconut?

• 56:27Speaker 00

  Hold up.

• 56:28Speaker 01

  Okay, I guess you are.

• 56:29Speaker 00

Apparently, this Flea Fleet, as it was called, was so-

• 56:33Speaker 01

  Flea, like flea, L-E-E?

• 56:35Speaker 00

  F-L-E-A, a little flea fleet. It's a little fleet. It's a flea fleet.

• 56:40Speaker 01

  Oh, a teeny tiny.

• 56:41Speaker 00

  It's a tiny fleet.

• 56:42Speaker 01

  Got it.

• 56:42Speaker 00

It was so small in size, it posed no threat to the German U-boats that were patrolling the Atlantic waters. But what the German naval commanders did not know was that the crew of these vessels were also gathering more than coconuts. They were gathering valuable intelligence about the Germans' fleet movements and sharing it with the American armed forces.

• 57:03Speaker 01

Wait one moment. What you're telling me is that while collecting supplies to make one of my favorite candies,

• 57:11Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 57:12Speaker 01

these folks were also providing important war intelligence to the United States government during World War II.

• 57:20Speaker 00

Yeah, the Mini Mounds Bar, I'm telling you, I was fascinated by all of this. And they also dropped all of their other production of candies and just concentrated on the Mounds Bar because it was so popular. And the US military purchased as much as 80% of their output by 1944. They would package 5 million candy bars monthly into combat rations.

• 57:43Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 57:43Speaker 00

Yeah. And now, as we know, over the years, Peter, Paul, they added several more things to their line, including the Almond Joy, which they're often, you know, sold together. But that's the story of the Mini Mounds Bar. They're now owned by the Hershey Company. You can still enjoy them today. Isn't that an amazing story?

• 58:01Speaker 01

I would like to enjoy one today.

• 58:04Speaker 00

So would I. The Mounds Flea Fleet.

• 58:08Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 58:09Speaker 00

You guys, you can learn more about it at connecticuthistory.org. Fascinating.

• 58:13Speaker 01

I have to say, I also love that it's an East Coast candy because it tracks with our show.

• 58:18Speaker 00

  It does.

• 58:19Speaker 01

That Michael would be supporting something that originated.

• 58:21Speaker 00

  In Connecticut.

• 58:23Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 58:24Speaker 00

  There you go.

• 58:25Speaker 01

The things you did not know you were going to learn today were that.

• 58:29Speaker 00

  I know.

• 58:30Speaker 01

I definitely was not expecting that.

• 58:32Speaker 00

  Amazing.

• 58:32Speaker 01

This is another example of our offshoot podcast, Two Ladies Who Google.

• 58:38Speaker 00

Yes. Two ladies who love to Google.

• 58:42Speaker 01

  And tell you things.

• 58:43Speaker 00

Mm-hmm. We're fun at a dinner party, guys.

• 58:46Speaker 01

  We actually are.

• 58:47Speaker 00

  We actually are.

• 58:48Speaker 01

All right. Michael has a talking head that is so good, I texted it to Steve. I don't know how he did it. He explains he always wanted to become an actor and he even has his own memorization techniques.

• 59:03Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 59:03Speaker 01

He explains that the way he learned the Pledge of Allegiance. Is by singing it to the tune of Old MacDonald.

• 59:11Speaker 00

  Mm hmm.

• 59:11Speaker 01

Steve then, as Michael, sings the Pledge of Allegiance to the tune of Old MacDonald. And I don't know how he did it. I don't know how he did it. I texted to him and I said, this is an amazing performance. This is so badass. I mean,

• 59:27Speaker 00

  I know.

• 59:28Speaker 01

He does take a long pause. This was in the script, by the way.

• 59:30Speaker 00

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the

• 59:33Speaker 01

United States of America. And to the republic for which it stands. One nation under God.

• 59:39Speaker 00

With a woof woof here and a woof woof there.

• 59:43Speaker 01

I mean, that is not easy to do.

• 59:46Speaker 00

Well, it is true, you guys. You put something to a song and you'll learn it.

• 59:49Speaker 01

It's called a mnemonic device, and that's a real thing.

• 59:53Speaker 00

It's a real thing. Michael says he uses it to learn people's names.

• 59:57Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 59:58Speaker 00

So what has he got here? He looks around the room. He's got shirtie, mole, lazy eye, Mexico, baldy, sugar boobs, black woman. He said, I take a unique part of you and I use that to memorize your name. Baldy, your head is bald, it is hairless, it is shiny, it is reflective, like a mirror. M, your name is Mark.

• 1:00:15Speaker 01

  And he says, yes, yes.

• 1:00:18Speaker 00

And Karen said, you know what? This is all really offensive.

• 1:00:21Speaker 01

Guest star alert. Mark, AKA Baldy, was played by Brian Patrick Mulligan. He has an extensive career playing famous historical figures.

• 1:00:32Speaker 00

  Like who?

• 1:00:34Speaker 01

  Al Capone.

• 1:00:35Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 1:00:35Speaker 01

Alfred Hitchcock, Teddy Roosevelt. He has played Ben Franklin in three different TV shows, including on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He just played W.C. Fields in a movie. But his most frequently played person is former Vice President Dick Cheney.

• 1:00:54Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 1:00:55Speaker 01

He has played Dick Cheney in six episodes of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and 10 times on Jimmy Kimmel.

• 1:01:02Speaker 00

Those guys love bringing Dick Cheney on.

• 1:01:04Speaker 01

I guess so. They love bringing Brian Patrick Mulligan on as Dick Cheney. I also want you to know that mole

• 1:01:12Speaker 00

  Mm hmm.

• 1:01:12Speaker 01

did not have a real mole.

• 1:01:14Speaker 00

  Mm, fakie mole.

• 1:01:15Speaker 01

Fakie mole. I know this because I saw the call sheet and he had to come in 15 minutes earlier than everyone else to get that mole put on.

• 1:01:22Speaker 00

  There you go.

• 1:01:22Speaker 01

Yeah. So listen, back at Dunder Mifflin, I think we need to check in on Andy.

• 1:01:28Speaker 00

  Yeah, he's fallen in love.

• 1:01:30Speaker 01

He has, and he needs an in, right? Before he goes and introduces himself to Julia, he's gonna go down and he's gonna spy on her car to see if he can learn anything about her.

• 1:01:39Speaker 00

  Gotta get intel.

• 1:01:40Speaker 01

So he's peering in her car and he sees that she has a Feist CD.

• 1:01:46Speaker 00

Oh, this is jackpot for him.

• 1:01:48Speaker 01

Jackpot. Then he sets off the car alarm.

• 1:01:50Speaker 00

  And then another car alarm.

• 1:01:52Speaker 01

Yes. Well, lady, do you remember this Feist song that he's gonna sing later?

• 1:01:58Speaker 00

  I do.

• 1:01:59Speaker 01

Huge. It's called "One, Two, Three, Four." So it was written by Leslie Feist, who went professionally as Feist. She's a Canadian pop singer. It came out in 2007. Anyway, I thought we should play the song for everybody.

• 1:02:14Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 1:02:15Speaker 01

Here is Feist "One, Two, Three, Four."

• 1:02:44Speaker 01

  It's so good.

• 1:02:45Speaker 00

  So.

• 1:02:46Speaker 01

Like, peppy. The song was nominated for two Grammy Awards and Feist was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Pop Vocal Album. It was so huge. She did a spin on it for Sesame Street.

• 1:02:58Speaker 00

Okay, I didn't want to say anything, but this is where I remember it.

• 1:03:02Speaker 01

  This was your Feist moment.

• 1:03:04Speaker 00

This was my Feist moment. I mean, I actually feel like I heard it here first on Sesame Street, and then I was like, oh, that's what people are talking about. Because Isabel loves Sesame Street.

• 1:03:15Speaker 01

Well, I pulled a clip of it on Sesame Street.

• 1:03:17Speaker 00

Oh, it's gonna bring back all the feels for me. I remember, oh, we watched this over and over. We're gonna learn to count, you guys, to the number four.

• 1:03:54Speaker 01

  Okay. Why am I crying?

• 1:03:56Speaker 00

Oh, my gosh. Because our kids were little and they love Sesame Street and they're older now.

• 1:04:01Speaker 01

I didn't even have a kid then. I didn't even have a kid then, but just I could hear the monsters start to sing. And I just could, there, there they all are and, ah, I don't know.

• 1:04:12Speaker 00

  I know.

• 1:04:12Speaker 01

You're right. We don't watch Sesame Street anymore. So maybe it just, I don't know.

• 1:04:16Speaker 00

I know. Listen, I found a video where I, Isabel was little and I was doing Elmo and I was doing, I was like, I was going, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, Elmo's world.

• 1:04:31Speaker 01

Oh, yes. We sang that song all the time.

• 1:04:34Speaker 00

  I know.

• 1:04:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:35Speaker 00

Aw. Let's have a baby. No, I'm kidding.

• 1:04:38Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:04:39Speaker 00

  I'm kidding. I'm kidding.

• 1:04:40Speaker 01

No. My daughter's been asking for a baby.

• 1:04:43Speaker 00

  Oh, my gosh.

• 1:04:44Speaker 01

  A little sister.

• 1:04:44Speaker 00

Listen, whenever I want to make my-

• 1:04:46Speaker 01

I didn't know how to explain perimenopause to her.

• 1:04:50Speaker 01

But I was like, Mama doesn't make any eggs anymore, baby.

• 1:04:53Speaker 00

Mama, hmm, let me, let's talk about cobwebs. I want to describe to you what a cobweb situation is.

• 1:05:00Speaker 01

Well, Andy is going to interrupt Stanley's meeting. He's going to bring them both some coffees.

• 1:05:05Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:05:05Speaker 01

He's put one, two, three, four Splendas in Stanley's coffee.

• 1:05:10Speaker 00

Yeah, he's like, one, two, three, four Splendas in your coffee, Stanley.

• 1:05:17Speaker 00

None in yours, Julia, because I don't know how you take it.

• 1:05:23Speaker 01

I thought Julia was absolutely perfect.

• 1:05:26Speaker 00

  Oh, I did too.

• 1:05:27Speaker 01

Guest star alert, Julia was played by Erica Tazelle. I totally recognized her from the show Justified. She played Rachel Brooks. Erica is a classically trained actress. She graduated with an MFA from the NYU Acting Program. Her professional acting debut was at the New York Shakespeare Festival. And since we've been tracking these things, I'll have you know, she was not on Monk, but she has been on both Law & Order and Law & Order Special Victims Unit.

• 1:05:57Speaker 00

I loved all of her reactions to Andy. They were so perfect. And this whole thing has just completely ticked off Stanley. He's like, what are you doing? He pulls Andy aside and Andy says he loves Julia with all his heart.

• 1:06:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:11Speaker 00

All his heart. Stanley is like, if you really love her, fine, give me two of your clients. You can have this client.

• 1:06:19Speaker 01

Yeah. So Andy takes over the meeting in a very awkward way. He wonders, where should we send your invoices?

• 1:06:29Speaker 00

  To your boyfriend?

• 1:06:30Speaker 01

  Right. Cause we certainly could.

• 1:06:33Speaker 00

And she's so matter of fact, he's like, no, you can send it to my work address. This is for work.

• 1:06:39Speaker 01

Yeah. But Andy does find out she does not have a boyfriend. And then he kind of panics.

• 1:06:45Speaker 00

  He's so excited.

• 1:06:47Speaker 01

And then he gets advice from Creed.

• 1:06:49Speaker 00

  Why Creed?

• 1:06:50Speaker 01

  I don't know, but I-

• 1:06:51Speaker 00

Why would you go to Creed for advice? Creed's like, say no more. Just go in for a kiss. That's how I got squeaky from.

• 1:06:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:00Speaker 00

I didn't know who that was. I had to Google it.

• 1:07:01Speaker 01

Oh, you didn't know who it was?

• 1:07:03Speaker 00

  No.

• 1:07:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:03Speaker 00

  Now I do.

• 1:07:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:07:05Speaker 00

  Well.

• 1:07:06Speaker 01

  Charles Manson.

• 1:07:07Speaker 00

She was part of the Manson family.

• 1:07:09Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:07:09Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:07:10Speaker 01

  She went to jail.

• 1:07:11Speaker 00

She tried to assassinate Gerald Ford.

• 1:07:13Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:07:13Speaker 00

  President Ford.

• 1:07:14Speaker 01

Right. She was not part of the Tate LaBianca murders, but she did try to assassinate Gerald Ford.

• 1:07:20Speaker 00

So I guess Creed kissed her and he says, have I ever steered you wrong, Jim?

• 1:07:25Speaker 01

Yeah, just go in and kiss her. Just do it. Then just, you know, that's what you should do.

• 1:07:31Speaker 00

When he called Andy Jim, if you're Andy, wouldn't you think, hmm, there's many reasons to red flags.

• 1:07:38Speaker 01

  There's so many red flags.

• 1:07:39Speaker 00

  So many red flags.

• 1:07:40Speaker 01

Well, for whatever reason, Andy is going to take Creed's advice. He's going to walk Julia to the car. He forgot his coat. Could he run back in and get it real quick? Because he's very, very cold. Julia says, my car's right here. I think, thanks for walking me down, but I'm good. And then when he gets her to the car, he goes in for a kiss. Andy, come on. This woman has had to put up with so much in this meeting and now this.

• 1:08:06Speaker 00

Also, like she could write him up.

• 1:08:09Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:08:10Speaker 00

He could lose his job, Andy. Don't listen to Creed, Andy.

• 1:08:14Speaker 01

  They do lose the account.

• 1:08:16Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:08:16Speaker 01

He has a talking head. So he kind of lost in every way today.

• 1:08:20Speaker 00

He lost three accounts. He lost two that he gave to Stanley.

• 1:08:24Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:08:25Speaker 00

One that Stanley gave to him, and he kind of showed his ass.

• 1:08:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:28Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:08:29Speaker 01

He did. Well, speaking of showing your ass, Karen has asked Michael to leave the conference room and come to her office.

• 1:08:37Speaker 00

It's like getting called to the principal's office.

• 1:08:39Speaker 01

And he is trying very hard to explain that he had a whole bit with a chainsaw that he hasn't been able to do.

• 1:08:47Speaker 00

  Mm hmm.

• 1:08:48Speaker 01

And Karen's like, you know what? Why don't you just put it all in an email and I'll send it to my team? And he's like, I can't put a chainsaw in an email, Karen. I can't do it. This is when Pam and Karen are going to have a little bonding moment.

• 1:09:01Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:09:02Speaker 01

It's so sweet. Pam says, when are you due? And Karen says, I'm doing a month.

• 1:09:09Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:09:10Speaker 01

Michael says, who did this to you? Who did this to you, Karen?

• 1:09:16Speaker 00

  She's like, my husband.

• 1:09:17Speaker 01

He's a dermatologist. We met at a bar.

• 1:09:20Speaker 00

And then they have all these cute photos. They have one where they're like dressed like hot dogs.

• 1:09:25Speaker 01

Yes, a hot dog and a hamburger. It's very cute. We had a lot of fan questions about this. Everyone wants to know, who is the man in the photo? Who is Dan, the dermatologist, who is married to Karen?

• 1:09:40Speaker 00

Well, it was played by writer Dan Gore.

• 1:09:44Speaker 01

Yeah. He was a writer on Parks and Recreation.

• 1:09:47Speaker 00

Yes, and he had been working with Mike Schur and Greg Daniels as they developed that show. And we had seen him a few times on set and in the writers' room, meeting with those guys.

• 1:09:56Speaker 01

And he came to set one day when we were shooting on the stages, and he and Rashida dressed up in all these different outfits, and they went around and took pictures.

• 1:10:07Speaker 01

  It was amazing.

• 1:10:08Speaker 00

  It was amazing.

• 1:10:09Speaker 01

Well, you know, now Karen is gonna ask about Jim.

• 1:10:13Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 1:10:15Speaker 01

It's a little bit of tension, but Pam says we're engaged.

• 1:10:19Speaker 00

And Karen is just earnestly happy for them.

• 1:10:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:10:23Speaker 00

Rashida really sold it because I think as an audience, you're like, oh, what's the, and she's like, she has so moved on. She has a whole life. She's happy and it gives Pam closure.

• 1:10:35Speaker 01

Yeah. I don't know about you, Ange, but I am happy if someone I have broken up with finds like a new relationship with someone else and they're in love. Because I'm like, yeah, that's why we broke up because we weren't a match and then you found your match. I don't have a lot of hard feelings about stuff and I've had some messy breakups. You know, and even still, I don't know. I just, I think I am more Karen on this one. I'm like, well, great. I'm glad that worked out because, you know, good.

• 1:11:10Speaker 00

  Mm hmm.

• 1:11:11Speaker 01

It wasn't meant to be for me and Jim, but it's for you and Jim.

• 1:11:14Speaker 00

Right. No, I think life is short. My grandmother used to always say, every pot has its lid.

• 1:11:20Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:11:21Speaker 00

And I want everyone to find their lid.

• 1:11:23Speaker 01

Yeah. I wasn't your lid. I fell in the water. Or I was too big.

• 1:11:28Speaker 00

I was too big for your pot.

• 1:11:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:30Speaker 00

Or too small for your pot. I didn't fit your pot. Let's break it down some more.

• 1:11:36Speaker 01

I'm trying to see if there's a, that's what she said in there. But I can't find it.

• 1:11:41Speaker 00

My lid fit your pot perfect? No.

• 1:11:45Speaker 01

I think it would be your pot fit my lid just right. That's what she said.

• 1:11:49Speaker 00

I don't think either of them are real strong. That's what she says.

• 1:11:52Speaker 01

We should let it go. No, let's stick with it.

• 1:11:55Speaker 00

No, let's try it. Let's try a few more. Let's try a few more. We'll find it. We'll find it.

• 1:12:02Speaker 01

Everyone, if you find it, will you email us?

• 1:12:04Speaker 00

Oh, no. What are you asking for?

• 1:12:07Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 1:12:08Speaker 00

  All right.

• 1:12:09Speaker 01

Some interesting mail to read, that's for sure.

• 1:12:11Speaker 00

That's for sure. I don't know where we are. We've hopped around.

• 1:12:14Speaker 01

  Well, I'll tell you.

• 1:12:16Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 1:12:16Speaker 01

Michael and Pam are gonna leave the Utica branch.

• 1:12:19Speaker 00

  All right.

• 1:12:20Speaker 01

Michael gives his lecture a B plus. He says Karen is mean.

• 1:12:24Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 1:12:25Speaker 01

Pam says, I like her. And then Pam says she's glad she came along and that seeing Karen gave her closure. Well, that's gonna come back because as they're driving away, Michael tells Pam, you know what? I never got closure with Holly. She was the love of my life and I never got closure. So Pam says, I think we should blow off this lecture in Rochester and go to Nashua instead.

• 1:12:57Speaker 01

  Michael says, let's do it.

• 1:12:59Speaker 00

Pam is like, yes, screw them. Let's do this.

• 1:13:03Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:13:04Speaker 00

All of a sudden, Michael just got, what do the kids call it, a ride or die? He's like, yeah.

• 1:13:09Speaker 01

Yeah. And then we have to be continued.

• 1:13:12Speaker 00

  Yeah, screen goes to black.

• 1:13:13Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:13:14Speaker 00

You think it's over, but there's a tag.

• 1:13:16Speaker 01

  There's a tag.

• 1:13:18Speaker 00

Jim is asking Creed for $3 for Kelly's party. Creed says, great, I'd like to contribute. And then he hands him a $3 bill.

• 1:13:27Speaker 01

Mm hmm. I had to know, whose face was on that $3 bill?

• 1:13:32Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 1:13:34Speaker 01

Because, you know, Phil Shea had to make that.

• 1:13:36Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:13:37Speaker 01

I paused, I looked at it. You know who I thought it was?

• 1:13:39Speaker 00

  Who?

• 1:13:40Speaker 01

  Brad Pitt.

• 1:13:41Speaker 00

  No.

• 1:13:42Speaker 01

It looked like Brad Pitt to me and I thought maybe it was a nod to BJ because he was doing the movie with Brad Pitt.

• 1:13:49Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 1:13:50Speaker 01

I don't know. I remember we talked a lot about Brad Pitt when BJ was making that movie. We all thought we might become friends with him.

• 1:13:56Speaker 00

We were positive. We were like, BJ, bring him to set. Maybe he likes to come have lunch.

• 1:14:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:01Speaker 00

We'll be totally cool, BJ. We will be normal.

• 1:14:04Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:14:05Speaker 00
