From the Garo Ellis padded radio room off Stockdale Highway, here is Money Wise. Call or text into the show 24/7 at 396-1000.

• 0:39Speaker 00

Here is Money Wise. Money, money, money, money.

• 0:45Speaker 00

  Money.

• 0:48Speaker 01

  Welcome to the Money.

• 0:48Speaker 00

  Nice.

• 0:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 0:49Speaker 00

  You hit that note nicely.

• 0:51Speaker 01

I tried. I tried. It wasn't as baritone as I normally come in at.

• 0:56Speaker 00

Seth's like, I could do it.

• 0:57Speaker 01

I could. I'm the tenor in the room.

• 1:01Speaker 01

Uh, welcome to the Money Wise Show, the Friday edition of the Money Wise Show, coming into the weekend hot. We're live from the Garo Ellis padded radio room off Stockdale Highway on ESPN Bakersfield, 1230 AM, 101.1 FM.

• 1:15Speaker 00

Sorry, I was, uh, our very own Michelle was sharing some insider info on a, uh, a reality show that they're recording.

• 1:23Speaker 01

You can't say insider on this show. LPL's listening.

• 1:26Speaker 00

  Whole different insider, I promise.

• 1:28Speaker 01

  Okay, okay.

• 1:28Speaker 00

Yeah, you were making us a little nervous there, uh, pushing to the last second. Everything that comes out of Steven's mouth has nothing to do with LPL or Money Wise. I know the disclaimer.

• 1:39Speaker 01

  So there's a, there's a reality show being?

• 1:41Speaker 00

Yes, they are, uh, actually, you know, Michelle has been working for, uh, the racetracks.

• 1:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:46Speaker 00

  For decades. She's a OG.

• 1:48Speaker 01

No, you can't say decades. She's not that old.

• 1:51Speaker 00

She is, uh, she started as an infant, but, uh, she is, uh, she is, uh, a part of a, a recording that they were doing with some, uh, some local racers.

• 1:59Speaker 01

Nice. All right. So ESPN be a part of that maybe.

• 2:03Speaker 00

  Exactly.

• 2:04Speaker 01

  There you go.

• 2:06Speaker 01

We're always streaming at MoneyWiseGuys.com on the old interwebs. Uh, join us there. Call into the show, text into the show, anytime of day, 24/7. Uh, 3961000, that's 6613961000. Today, we're your hosts. I'm Justin Leland with

• 2:24Speaker 00

  Seth Perry and

• 2:25Speaker 01

  Seth Perry.

• 2:25Speaker 00

Super stoked, man. We haven't been on together.

• 2:27Speaker 01

I know. This is a problem, though. And I'll show, I'll tell you why.

• 2:31Speaker 00

Cause I have Friday brain already?

• 2:33Speaker 01

Well, maybe, but Steven, you gotta be careful when, when scheduling me with a new host. Because the tradition is now, whenever I have a, a show with a new host that I haven't done the show with before,

• 2:47Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 2:48Speaker 01

  the markets drop precipitously.

• 2:50Speaker 00

Is there some type of hazing that I didn't know?

• 2:52Speaker 01

Yeah, it is, uh, it's a tradition.

• 2:54Speaker 00

  That's not good.

• 2:55Speaker 01

Yeah. So whenever I'm, I'm, I'll just look at the schedule and if I, if it's a, if I'm on the schedule with somebody I haven't done the show with before.

• 3:04Speaker 00

  Make some moves.

• 3:05Speaker 01

Just, just make some moves before that happens.

• 3:07Speaker 00

Well, luckily the show starts after the market closes.

• 3:09Speaker 01

  Bingo.

• 3:10Speaker 00

So you can't put that on me.

• 3:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 3:13Speaker 00

Seth's been on the radio since, what, 7:30 this morning? So.

• 3:16Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 3:17Speaker 02

Shout out to your show, man. That was awesome.

• 3:19Speaker 00

  Appreciate it.

• 3:19Speaker 02

Getting on the Early Bird Special and talking about, um, a little event we have coming up this next week. I had a great time, man.

• 3:26Speaker 01

  That's a good show.

• 3:27Speaker 00

What is this event you speak of?

• 3:28Speaker 02

  Well, since you ask.

• 3:32Speaker 02

Uh, we have a really nice RSVP list already. Let, let me give you the, the quick details.

• 3:37Speaker 01

  The deets.

• 3:38Speaker 02

The deets is this coming Wednesday, August 6th, 5:30 to 6:30 PM ish. So if you need to take off at 6:30, no big deal. Uh, we're doing, uh, basically a financial basics for teens seminar and parents are invited. I've seen a couple of grandparents and, um, guardians on the RSVP list. But basically you show up, doors open at 5:15 and we're going to be going over, uh, some things like banking basics, budgeting, building credit, saving and investing stuff that really, truly is not being taught very much in high school.

• 4:15Speaker 01

  Or not at all.

• 4:16Speaker 02

  Or not at all.

• 4:17Speaker 01

  Right.

• 4:18Speaker 02

Um, I think the three of us are in the generation that like a listener talked about our econ class was macroeconomics. All I remember is supply and demand inverse like I don't learn anything. Didn't know, didn't learn anything. So that's what this is geared for. This is over at the Bakersfield Racket Club, 1660 Pine Street, uh, right, right off of, uh, Truckston and the teenagers aged 14 to 19, parents and guardians encouraged to join.

• 4:44Speaker 00

It's a whole different world, man.

• 4:45Speaker 01

What if that teenager's 13? Will they be able to show up?

• 4:48Speaker 02

I mean, we're not gonna do, we're not gonna do a birth certificate check.

• 4:52Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 4:52Speaker 02

So I think they'll be all right. I mean, I think they'll be all right. Now, if you bring a stroller in, then yeah.

• 4:59Speaker 01

  No strollers allowed.

• 5:00Speaker 00

Yeah, these days, we, we talked about it on the early show is the, uh, you know, the social media. These kids are making more than their parents just YouTube in. So it's, it's a smart thing. Like I, like I said this morning, in my econ class, all they did was teach us checkbooks and it was pretty basic. So if you can get a free seminar out of one of these money wise guys and to help the, uh, the next generation, I would jump on it, man.

• 5:25Speaker 01

Yeah. And this is not being done online, right? There's no, no, no.

• 5:29Speaker 02

Great. That answers another question. We had come in, it is a live session. Say, hey, I want to get there. You do need to RSVP by Monday. So we know how much pizza and refreshments to bring. And, and you can call our office, 661-847-1000. Again, it's 661-847-1000. And just say, hey, I'd like to RSVP me and my youngster and the rest is history. I look forward to seeing you guys on Wednesday.

• 5:56Speaker 01

And I'm sure we'll put that onto the old podcast notes. Correct there, Steve Z.

• 5:59Speaker 00

  You know it.

• 6:00Speaker 01

You know it. That sounds like a great, uh, it's, it's obviously something that needs to be done and, and, uh, it does not get taught enough in, in high school or in, and you, you learn it from the school of hard knocks is what happens. Is once you get out of, uh, your parents' house, it's like, wait, what's a credit card? Wait, I have to pay this back?

• 6:22Speaker 02

  Right? What's an interest rate?

• 6:24Speaker 01

  Huh?

• 6:25Speaker 02

What is you buy a car and a year or two later, I want a new car. I'm gonna trade this in, you know?

• 6:31Speaker 01

Which, yeah, we're gonna talk about that maybe a little bit later. I gotta, I gotta, this, there's some, uh, we'll, we'll, we'll tease that a little bit later, but yeah, there's, there's something going on with the auto industry right now. And people paying way more than they should for cars. Uh, we got a great show though for you. We have Gabriel Alvarez, lead pastor for, um, Calvary Baptist Church that's gonna be coming here to chat with us about a back to school event that's coming up. Uh, he'll be here at the, uh, the bottom of the hour, uh, to discuss that. Um, but we're gonna do what we do. We talk about numbers, but before we do that, Steve, you're, you're wearing a Mariners hat over there.

• 7:11Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 7:12Speaker 01

Your Mariners made a killing in their, the trade deadline.

• 7:16Speaker 00

Yeah, and I was worried that they weren't gonna, because in the past, they usually don't.

• 7:21Speaker 01

Well, I know what teams don't and never do, and that's my Angels that sit there, sitting on their thumbs and do absolutely nothing.

• 7:28Speaker 00

I wasn't gonna bring up the Angels, cuz I still have a little taste in my mouth from last week, but the, uh, we'll see. Somebody has got to beat these Dodgers, and, uh, I'm hoping the Mariners will. I'm happy. We've got another big hitter, some.

• 7:42Speaker 01

Suarez, man, that guy is a beast.

• 7:45Speaker 00

They've been talking about Suarez for a couple of weeks, so I was happy that they pulled the trigger and, uh, we'll see if it pays off.

• 7:50Speaker 01

They, they needed him, and, uh, I honestly, I think now the Mariners are the team to beat in the AL West. Um, if they weren't already, if they weren't already, um, and this, this puts them in, in great shape to, to make a, a run deep into October.

• 8:11Speaker 00

  We will see.

• 8:11Speaker 01

I hate to say that cuz I hate the Mariners with a passion.

• 8:14Speaker 00

  Why?

• 8:15Speaker 01

  Uh,

• 8:16Speaker 02

Because they're in the same division.

• 8:17Speaker 00

Is it always this way, Steven? I'm feeling a little, a little uncomfortable. But, you know, we could talk positive cuz football started last night.

• 8:24Speaker 01

Football did start, and, uh, it is preseason.

• 8:29Speaker 01

And the LA Chargers are all yay, we won.

• 8:33Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 8:33Speaker 01

  And.

• 8:33Speaker 00

  We beat the Lions.

• 8:34Speaker 01

  We beat the Lions and.

• 8:36Speaker 00

  I was, it wasn't very.

• 8:37Speaker 01

It's a Hall of Fame game.

• 8:38Speaker 00

  Very good game.

• 8:39Speaker 01

  Nobody cares.

• 8:40Speaker 00

I will say they did bust out the AI, the robots for the first down markers, which was kind of cool to see.

• 8:47Speaker 01

  Come again. I like that.

• 8:48Speaker 00

  What is that?

• 8:48Speaker 01

So the first down markers has always been the chains, right? Yeah. The chain game goes out there and you remember the, the, the post-it note or the card game, right?

• 8:58Speaker 00

  Piece of paper.

• 8:59Speaker 01

Paper through it. Right? So now the, there's like a chip or whatever in the ball, right?

• 9:05Speaker 00

  What?

• 9:06Speaker 01

  That they can.

• 9:06Speaker 00

  With lasers?

• 9:07Speaker 01

Yeah, they can tell with lasers and AI where the ball actually, where the furthest point where the ball actually reached. And they can tell if it's a first down or not.

• 9:17Speaker 00

Just like baseball, they're testing it out with the, the All-Star game, the same thing, which I think was a upgrade.

• 9:24Speaker 01

It is an upgrade. Is it going to be live for the full season or is it kind of just in testing mode?

• 9:29Speaker 00

  They're testing it.

• 9:30Speaker 01

Maybe next year it might come out.

• 9:32Speaker 00

You know, don't mess with the sport, but, but I think it's going to help it, you know, especially with some of these refs that have been caught gambling or, you know, the inside, so.

• 9:43Speaker 01

Where do you draw the line though? That's a topic for another show maybe, but you know, it's guys, it starts, you know, it starts with sideline markers.

• 9:50Speaker 00

  Oh, yeah.

• 9:50Speaker 01

And then there's going to be robots zooming around the field and then it's just going to be.

• 9:54Speaker 00

  Bring it.

• 9:54Speaker 01

Bring it. Is it ever going to be AI robots?

• 9:57Speaker 00

I'm waiting for them to start playing.

• 9:59Speaker 01

Exactly. Well, AI, AI league. Yeah. No, I don't, I think there's still always going to be subjectivity as far as like holding calls or, you know, obviously I think you can do an AI for like offsides and, you know, motion and that kind of stuff because timing and all. But holding pass interference, that's always going to be something that's going to be a subjective call.

• 10:22Speaker 00

Yeah, it's going to be the human touch.

• 10:23Speaker 01

The human, human element. In baseball, I cannot wait until they get the strike zone. Because if you don't, if you don't know, like, what was it last week? Uh, Angels were playing, uh, Rangifo was up to bat, six thrown pitches, six balls, all of them proven balls. He strikes out. He never took the bat off his shoulder. And he was, he struck out. And it was, he walked three times is what happened.

• 10:54Speaker 00

I think that's the perfect example. I mean, that's where they think the robots, the AI is perfect for the strike zone and the first down markers. Maybe we just leave it like that.

• 11:03Speaker 01

Right. You know, I like that. I like the idea of doing that, but you know, here, but uh, we're going to get to some numbers here because it was ugly today. It was a, it was, it was a rough day on the market. Seth, what did we end up the week? It was, it, it was ugly. I'm going to let you.

• 11:21Speaker 02

I'm not sure where we ended the week, but I know the day took a kick in the stomach. We were down S and P 500, 500 largest companies in the U.S. Down 1.6%. Um, we always do like to share year to date. We're still up 6%. The one year about 14 and a half percent.

• 11:40Speaker 01

Right. Over the last rolling 12 months.

• 11:42Speaker 02

Yep. And then, so we talked about, you know, the fact that Trump can kind of give a preview of what's coming and the market reacts and then the things happen, which uh,

• 11:55Speaker 01

And then the market reacts again.

• 11:56Speaker 02

It reacts again. It's almost like it could be being manipulated. I guess it could be seen that way, but.

• 12:02Speaker 01

Is there something called a taco trade?

• 12:04Speaker 02

We're just, yeah, it's coming. All right. Not saying that's what it is, but it could appear to be that way. So no, a weak jobs report came out, only 73,000 jobs added in July, far below the expected 100, 100K unemployment rate. Then is up four to 4.2%.

• 12:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:20Speaker 02

Um, the, the big T word struck again, um, yesterday, Trump announcing reciprocal tariffs on 66 different countries ranging from 10 to 41%. These are set to take place on August 7th and so.

• 12:36Speaker 01

  A week from today.

• 12:37Speaker 02

  It's a week from today.

• 12:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:39Speaker 02

  Close.

• 12:40Speaker 00

  That'd be the eighth.

• 12:41Speaker 01

  Well, whatever.

• 12:42Speaker 02

  Close enough.

• 12:43Speaker 00

I mean, you're the month number guy.

• 12:44Speaker 01

Steven? Come on, man. Give me a break. Jeez.

• 12:50Speaker 00

The same guys that were just, "Two minutes, guys. What's wrong with you?"

• 12:53Speaker 01

It was like, one minute, man, and you're just bebopping on in. And he gave us the nerdy look to like, "I got this, dude. I got this."

• 12:59Speaker 00

It's not my first radio show.

• 13:02Speaker 01

I was gonna say, if you're not stressed, I guess we shouldn't be stressed.

• 13:05Speaker 00

Right. And what T-word are you talking about? Cause I just heard two of them.

• 13:08Speaker 01

The tariff. The tariffs. You know, it's one of those things. And so, here's the thing. For the labor market, let's talk about the labor market real quick before we go to break. And we'll expound on this a little bit later in the second segment. But for the US economy to grow and to keep our unemployment rate stable at say 4% or 4.2%, we need to create no less than 200,000 jobs a month. Just to take, just to keep pace with the birth rate. Okay? That is, that is the statistic that we need to meet on a regular basis.

• 13:53Speaker 01

200,000 jobs per month has to be created in order to keep, to keep stasis, right? To keep stable. And recently, over the past few months, we have dipped below that, okay? Which is a sign that the labor market is softening. Now, the unemployment rate is still in a pretty good number. 4.2% is nothing, is not bad. I mean, that's still historically low. Now, the flip side of that is the labor participation rate is at the lowest point that it's been since the 1990s.

• 14:35Speaker 01

It has dipped down to around 60, I think it's 66.2% labor participation rate. What that means is...

• 14:44Speaker 01

That there's less folks looking for work and thereby not counted in the unemployment numbers.

• 14:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:52Speaker 01

The unemployment numbers are only those people that are actively out looking for work who are not able to find a job. If you're not looking for work because the work isn't there, you're not counted and that goes into the labor participation rate. That number has dropped to the lowest rate since I believe it was like the late 1990s. It's, uh, it's, it's not good. So 73,000 jobs created in, uh, July. What's worse is when you look back at the months of June and May, we have downward revisions on both of those months.

• 15:32Speaker 01

In June and May, they had said that the market had created 144,000 and 147,000 jobs respectively for both of those months. Both of those months have now been revised downward to 11,000, or I'm sorry, 11,000 jobs and 17,000 jobs. That is, uh, basically flat. We didn't create any jobs in May or June and very few in July. This is why you're seeing the markets take as, as big of a step back as we're seeing is the softening in the labor market and the tariffs that have been announced.

• 16:13Speaker 01

This is what we're seeing and it basically, earlier in the week, Jerome Powell, they kept interest rates stagnant, they left them alone. This is going to be fuel for the Federal Reserve to have to lower rates when they next meet in September.

• 16:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:31Speaker 01

How much are they going to lower them? 50 basis points, 25 basis points? What are they going to do? Anybody's guess. But at this point, with these numbers coming out and tariffs being announced and labor market softening, these are the types of things that are going to, uh, kind of force the hand of the Fed to start lowering interest rates even further.

• 16:51Speaker 02

You know what's crazy too is, you know, we talk a lot about AI and this is, we're living in a day and age where this has never been a topic of discussion, but doing a little bit of research, it looks like AI replaced from private employers accounted for more than 10,000 job cuts in July alone. And so now this is kind of a new. A new thing to look at, it's going to boost productivity, lower costs for employers, right? But it's going to put people out of work. And so, you know, we're living in some interesting times.

• 17:21Speaker 01

But my retort to that would be, it was the same thing when we went through the industrial revolution, right? We've always had to deal with some level of productivity increase. That's what capitalism is all about, right? Is how do we get the most productivity out of a unit of work, right? And so, this has always been the case. And so, AI is just another avenue to get more productivity out of that same unit of work. And so, how do we, maybe a conversation for a different day, but the question then becomes, how do we best utilize the workforce utilizing the tools that we have?

• 18:06Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 18:07Speaker 01

Right? And that's going to be a conversation that's going to be had to be had over the next decade or longer.

• 18:13Speaker 02

It could lead to, it's a great point, because it could lead to this even second industrial revolution. You free up tons of workers that could go out and physically, because we're not there where AI can go out and raise a 20-story building, right? And so, it's going to free up more, AI replaces more yachts.

• 18:30Speaker 01

I mean, there's, you know, the silver lining around that dark cloud is, you know, the look at the bright side, right? Well, we're going to take a quick break. We're going to come back. We're going to talk a little bit more about these job numbers and kind of dive a little bit deeper when we come back.

• 18:43Speaker 00

• 19:10Speaker 01

  Welcome back.

• 19:11Speaker 02

  That's a gem.

• 19:12Speaker 01

Steven knows where my heart's at.

• 19:14Speaker 02

If that doesn't fire you up on a Friday, what will?

• 19:21Speaker 01

Welcome back to the Money Wise Show. I'm your host, Justin Leland, here with Seth Perry.

• 19:29Speaker 01

Hey, we had, we were talking about the, the jobs numbers and we talked about how, you know, the economy to continue growing at a, at a relatively decent pace, GDP growing at about 3% a year and, you know, keeping pace with the birth rate and everything else. We need to create about 200,000 jobs a year to do that. And so for the last three months, we've been well under 100,000, you know, 11,000, 17,000 and 73,000. And so our administration, and this is not a political show, but this is, this is something that the Bureau of Labor

• 20:14Speaker 01

Statistics is a nonpartisan bureau and the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics is appointed and, and, you know, confirmed by the Senate and Congress and everything, and is purely a non-political position by design, right? That's, that's the way our economy is supposed to work. We, we want to make sure that our economy is not driven by the political winds of the day. Um, well, when the numbers came out today, somebody was not very happy with the numbers and, um, let's just say immediately fired the commissioner

• 20:59Speaker 01

of the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

• 21:00Speaker 02

Did he say it? Did he say?

• 21:02Speaker 01

  He said the catchphrase.

• 21:04Speaker 02

  You're fired.

• 21:05Speaker 01

Done. And he said on Truth Social, uh, quote, "I was just informed that our country's quote-unquote jobs numbers..."

• 21:17Speaker 01

Are being produced by a Biden appointee, Dr. Erica McInfarther, I think is her name.

• 21:24Speaker 02

  What was the last name?

• 21:24Speaker 01

McInfarther. Yeah, I can't pronounce it. I'm not gonna butcher it anymore.

• 21:29Speaker 02

I liked the first one. First one was cooler, but.

• 21:31Speaker 01

The commissioner of labor statistics who faked the jobs numbers before the election to try and boost Kamala Harris's chances of victory. I don't even wanna like try and parse that out.

• 21:42Speaker 02

  Lot to unpack.

• 21:43Speaker 01

Lot to unpack with that there. There's, um, none of that is true, other than the fact that she was, she was a Biden appointee. Um, the way that these numbers are generated, and I would, I would ask anybody that's listening right now, go to Google, go to your favorite, you know, ChatGPT, Grok, whatever. Ask the question, how does the Bureau of Labor Statistics generate its jobs numbers?

• 22:18Speaker 01

Okay? These are not made up numbers. These are not numbers that just fall out of thin air and are like, and even ask the question, are they politically, uh, you know, generated? Are they, are they influenced by politics? Ask the question.

• 22:37Speaker 01

You'll get the straight answer. They're not.

• 22:41Speaker 01

They're completely outside of the realm of politics. They're not to be influenced. These are numbers that are generated by, um, data that's coming in from all over the country.

• 22:55Speaker 01

From different, from different data points, from manufacturing, uh, data points, from, uh, healthcare, from every different industry that's out there. And they compile these numbers and

• 23:12Speaker 01

there's, there's no wiggle room to the way they do these numbers. Now, there's revisions that come in because of the way that the statistics are coming in and they have to sometimes go back and revise the numbers based on,

• 23:26Speaker 01

let's say, seasonal kind of adjustments that have to be done. It's a more, um, statistical analysis on things that are done that way, but they are not manipulated in any way.

• 23:39Speaker 01

So for for us to start thinking, we have to remember that we cannot go into a world of of trying to manipulate or think that these government agencies are somehow manipulating these numbers. We've got to be very careful about making that claim. So think about that as we're going through this. Firing this individual because we just don't like the numbers. Now what's going to happen? I don't know. We'll be you'll see. We'll see the next couple of months when numbers

• 24:22Speaker 01

come out and they're potentially artificially high for some reason. We'll see. But we did get a couple of messages. What was the?

• 24:35Speaker 02

Got some good ones. So first one, I've worked in oil for 20 years and this has been the most wild thing I've seen. Rig work has pretty much disappeared, but production services have almost doubled. I've moved over to steaming oil pumps and we are very busy. I hope my hardworking oil team that the rig work comes from back soon because some of them are really hurting. And yes.

• 24:58Speaker 01

  I agree with you, man.

• 24:59Speaker 02

Our local economy built on oil and agriculture and it's it's been rough. I'm a casualty of that. I was with Halliburton for 10 years and made it through the third round of layoffs. I think I was let go in the fourth, third or fourth. I don't remember, but you know, folks have families. And

• 25:18Speaker 01

But to say that our governor has actually kind of released a little bit of the reins. I think we're getting a few more permits that are getting approved at this point. So more to come. I think we might.

• 25:33Speaker 02

The BLM might be opening up.

• 25:35Speaker 01

  Some more ground.

• 25:37Speaker 02

They're reviewing 684,000 acres of California land. So BLM, so government owns it, but it's in California?

• 25:44Speaker 01

  Yes, Bureau of Land Management.

• 25:45Speaker 02

And that could lead to 10 to 40 new wells per year in the big. But again, 10 to 40 per year. I remember when Elk Hills had, what, 20 drilling rigs, you know, and just just poking holes in the ground as fast as they could. So it's definitely different. Hang in there. But one thing I've learned and had to do myself is you got to learn to pivot. Get some career counseling, look at all those soft and hard skills that you've learned and transition. If you do have some college background, that will help you. If you don't, maybe start taking some classes part-time because that will open up doors and network. The hard work, I mean, there's nothing harder than, the work ethic is impeccable.

• 26:22Speaker 01

Yeah, the work ethic's already there. You already got that.

• 26:24Speaker 02

Shift, people don't understand, man, when you, when you leave your house, because it's an hour on both ends to get out there. So you're leaving your house at 5:00 PM, you, you get on Tower at 6:00 PM.

• 26:34Speaker 01

  AM.

• 26:35Speaker 02

  Uh, no, 6:00 PM.

• 26:36Speaker 01

  Night, night shift.

• 26:37Speaker 02

  Night crew.

• 26:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:38Speaker 02

And then you work through until 6:00 AM, you get home at 7:00, you're, you know, your kids want to see, it's rough. It's really very difficult.

• 26:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:44Speaker 02

Very difficult. But anyway, we feel for you, but it does look like there's a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Next one. Will your seminar for teens be online? Can't get off work in time to pick up my daughter and get to the event, but would love to catch it online. Unfortunately, no, this first one will not be, but hopefully if we do any more of these in the future, we've learned that, hey, it'd be great to, to have it on, on, and I think we have to get to our guest.

• 27:07Speaker 01

Yeah, we're gonna go ahead and take a quick break. When we come back, we're gonna be, uh, we'll be joined by a great guest here. Um, Gabriel Alvarez from Calvary Chapel will be right back.

Welcome back to the Money Wise Show. No, Paul Sheldon's not joining us.

• 28:03Speaker 00

  Not today.

• 28:03Speaker 02

  Is this his song?

• 28:04Speaker 01

No, every time that the Beatles play, I always think it's gonna be Paul Sheldon, cuz that's the thing, but...

• 28:11Speaker 00

  I love the Beatles.

• 28:12Speaker 01

  I do like the Beatles.

• 28:13Speaker 02

You know, I worked in Paul's office in, from 2002 until around 2004, 2005.

• 28:18Speaker 01

I knew there was a reason I didn't like you.

• 28:20Speaker 02

And he is, uh, he's a hard-working man.

• 28:23Speaker 01

  He is.

• 28:24Speaker 02

  He's a hard-working man.

• 28:25Speaker 01

  He is a great dude.

• 28:26Speaker 00

He's been a long-time regular on our show.

• 28:28Speaker 01

He's a great dude. I like him. He's a good guy, good guy.

• 28:32Speaker 01

Welcome back to the Money Wise Show. I'm your host, Justin Leland, here with Seth Perry. We are joined by great, uh, great folks, great, uh, friends of the show, Gabriel Alvarez and Jessica Villa from Calvary Bakersfield. Uh, Gabriel, you're the lead pastor. Welcome to the show.

• 28:51Speaker 03

I am. Thank you so much. Thank you for having us.

• 28:53Speaker 01

Yeah, absolutely. Now, you are having an event, not this Saturday, but next Saturday. Tell us what's going on.

• 29:00Speaker 03

Yes, yeah, August 9th, which is the following Saturday, we're having a, our annual Back to School Summer Fest. Uh, it's been growing every year, so we're expecting close to 1,500. We started off two years ago, we had about a little over 800 people last year, a little over 1,300.

• 29:16Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 29:16Speaker 03

This year, we're expecting 1,500 people.

• 29:18Speaker 01

You're knocking the doors off every year.

• 29:20Speaker 03

Well, you know, God's been a blessing, you know, and he's, he's been providing, and uh, it's, it's, it's our duty, uh, to, to reach out to the community, uh, to give out backpacks, and everything's absolutely free. So, we're excited for it, and we're getting ready.

• 29:33Speaker 01

Nice. So, when is it? It's obviously next Saturday, but tell us a little bit more about the when, where, how, how do they get in touch with you? What's going on?

• 29:43Speaker 03

Yeah, absolutely. Thank you. Uh, so, it's gonna be happening on the 9th, from 6:30 to 8:30. It'll be in the evening. Um, it'll be happening there at the church, at Calvary Bakersfield, located at 4040 Nile Street. Um, I expect people to arrive early. Uh, that's what's happened in the last two years. Uh, people were there probably a couple of hours before waiting in line. Uh, we're gonna be giving out backpacks. We have close to 1,000 backpacks that we'll be giving out that, that, that event. Uh, and they're filled with... With school supplies. Uh, we got community events or community booths, uh, community organizations that'll be out there having their booth, um, providing their information. Uh, we've had community partners that have come on board and say, hey, we want to be a part of this.

• 30:25Speaker 03

Uh, we want to be able to, uh, provide, give out to the community. We see the need that's out there. Uh, we'll have food out there as well and some prizes, games and, and, and a whole lot of fun.

• 30:34Speaker 01

Yeah, a little bit of a party, huh?

• 30:36Speaker 03

Yes, yes. And you know, and, and it's perfect right before, you know, just days before school starts. I believe school starts on that Wednesday.

• 30:42Speaker 01

  Correct, yeah.

• 30:43Speaker 02

Is this starting even earlier this year? It seems like every year they push it back a day.

• 30:47Speaker 01

Like the second, like the third Wednesday or whatever, yeah.

• 30:49Speaker 02

We're gonna be starting on July 5th here.

• 30:51Speaker 03

Pretty, pretty much, you know, it, it, it feels like that, like it's, it's that Wednesday that they'll be starting school. So I've asked, even our youth, are you ready for school? Most of them will tell me, nope.

• 31:00Speaker 01

Nope. Summer's nice. I like, I like to play the Nintendo Switch.

• 31:05Speaker 02

Yep. I'll tell you what, teachers aren't ready either. Cause I, I used to do a little bit of education and this is the rough time of year. Like the realization of all the funds come to an end, right?

• 31:14Speaker 01

Ready to go back to work.

• 31:16Speaker 02

And speaking to that, you know, it's not that, you know, materialism is so important, but for a young person, image, it is a lot and it carries a lot. And so this is really good work you guys are doing. You know, to give a, a nice, clean, fresh backpack. I mean, just something as simple as that, you know, I had students that, you know, I mean, either no backpack.

• 31:35Speaker 01

Yeah, three or four years back, yeah.

• 31:37Speaker 02

And, and just a simple gesture of, um, putting others first. It's just, this is great work you guys are doing.

• 31:44Speaker 03

  No, I appreciate that.

• 31:45Speaker 01

So where are you getting the backpacks from? Are they being donated to you from other organizations? Or do you have, uh, a, a pool of money that you're going out and purchasing these? How, how are you putting these backpacks and all this school supplies together?

• 31:57Speaker 03

Very good question. Uh, so we have, um, some sponsors. Uh, we have some organizations, organizations, um, partners that have poured in, uh, monetarily. Uh, we've had other organizations where they'll have their own backpack drive and they'll give us the backpacks that they've collected, if either from their, their employees or just, uh, the, the neighborhood that they, you know, they reached out to. So a lot of different areas. We've allocated a, a budget for this as well. So. Our goal was to get over uh uh eight hundred and fifty and we we we did.

• 32:27Speaker 01

  Exceeded the goal.

• 32:28Speaker 03

Exceeded the goal. We have I I think a little over nine twenty-five.

• 32:32Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 32:32Speaker 03

So very close to a thousand and there's still more backpacks coming in. I've gotten a call just last week saying, hey, we got backpacks. Is it we we won't be able to get them to till until next week because that's when we have our meeting and so forth and and so we're expecting a whole lot more.

• 32:46Speaker 01

Yeah. So Jessica, you're part of this as well. Are you still like accepting back? Like, is there anybody that reaches out and is like, hey, we're gonna be, we have another four hundred backpacks. Where do we, where do we drop them off? Right? What are we doing?

• 32:58Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. So we do um, we have uh our own drive at the at our church. Um, but also it's just a matter of like, there's times, for example, United Way is one of our sponsors and they donated um a hundred and twenty-six backpacks and so they weren't able to drop it off to us, but I went out and I had, we picked them up and.

• 33:18Speaker 01

Yeah, they're gonna give me a hundred and twenty. I'm, I'll drive out.

• 33:20Speaker 04

  Right.

• 33:21Speaker 01

I mean, that's might be a couple of trips. That's a lot of backpacks. I'm gonna make it happen.

• 33:25Speaker 04

No, yeah, yeah. So um, it just depends on on how, you know, the availability of everybody and how we get things.

• 33:32Speaker 01

  Right.

• 33:32Speaker 04

  Going, you know?

• 33:33Speaker 01

So if there is more folks out there listening to our voice today that wanted to. They want to pitch in. Pitch in, right? And um, uh, you know, help out the Calvary Bakersfield uh with some more school supplies. How would they reach out to you and and provide? Get you to the fifteen hundred, right? And what's the biggest need right now? Yeah.

• 33:54Speaker 03

Well, right now is a monetary need. Uh, we're we're we're preparing for at least sixteen hundred hot dogs. We'll be giving those out as well. Um, also as well, we got a donation from um Vans. So we have brand new shoes that we'll be giving out to the to the kids out there. Uh, and so we're excited for that. So any other school supplies that we have backpacks, of course, uh, as as more and more people are hearing about this event, people are expecting, you know, something to happen before school starts. And so those are the ma- major things, backpacks, of course. Uh, they can go to our website at ccbakersfield.com slash summerfest.

• 34:28Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 34:28Speaker 03

On there, they'll see, you'll you'll be able to see all the information. In the history of Summer Fest, different ways you can give and even volunteer. So if there's anybody who's listening, they can't give monetarily, they can't donate an item, but they can give of their time.

• 34:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 34:44Speaker 03

And so we're open. It's not just people who just show up to the church. We've gotten calls from, I think, Ms. California. Kern County. Ms. Kern County and say, hey, we want to be there. We want to help. And it's more the merrier. There's a, there's a spot, there's a space. There's a role for everybody who's willing to help.

• 35:02Speaker 01

  Absolutely.

• 35:03Speaker 02

It's a lot of hot dogs.

• 35:04Speaker 01

  That's, I mean, that's whoever's on the grill. I mean, you better.

• 35:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:07Speaker 02

You might need a couple of extra flat top grills.

• 35:09Speaker 03

Yeah. He asked for some extra grills and some people said, hey, I'll take mine over there. And we'll make it happen.

• 35:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 35:15Speaker 03

We're excited. Frito Lay is one of our other sponsors. They're giving us over 1,500 chips.

• 35:21Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 35:21Speaker 03

And so we'll be getting that next week as well. So I mean, it's just been a blessing. And for this to be our 30 year and we're anticipating, you know, 1,500 people to be out there. You know, it's just a time of fun before school starts again.

• 35:32Speaker 01

And when did you guys start? You said two years ago?

• 35:34Speaker 03

We started two years ago. So this is our third annual.

• 35:37Speaker 01

Where did that come from? What drove this drive?

• 35:40Speaker 03

Well, I started pastoring about two and a half years ago. And so being a new pastor, starting for the very first time, starting at this church, we knew we needed to do something in the community. We had to. It was, it was just, we've been, we've been blessed. We're there on 4049th Street. We see a lot of traffic. You have stores, a lot of just people just going on by. And this was something small that not only the community needed, but the church needed. And it was just something that, hey, not only are we blessed to receive, but we're blessed to give. We're blessed, we're blessed to serve. And so that's where it kind of just started and it just started growing from there.

• 36:18Speaker 01

  Awesome.

• 36:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:19Speaker 01

That's really awesome. And so really thankful for you guys and doing all of that. We're going to make sure that the website, the, all of the information is on the podcast notes. So expect to get a couple more phone calls and, and hits to the website, right, Steve Z? Of course. And we're going to take care of that. We're going to take a quick break and we'll be right back. Thank you so much for joining us today, Gabriel and Jessica. Thank you so much.

• 36:42Speaker 00

  Thank you.

• 36:43Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 36:43Speaker 00

• 37:17Speaker 02

I got a problem, Steve. I got a big problem.

• 37:21Speaker 01

I got a big problem. He's got many, he's got many problems.

• 37:23Speaker 02

The music, the music is better on Fridays.

• 37:26Speaker 01

  Because I'm here.

• 37:27Speaker 02

  What's the deal?

• 37:27Speaker 00

I gotta mix it up, man. And it's Friday.

• 37:30Speaker 02

I mean, these are jams, dude.

• 37:31Speaker 01

He knows how to rock it out.

• 37:33Speaker 02

  Telling you.

• 37:33Speaker 00

Me and Justin go way back.

• 37:34Speaker 01

  We go way back.

• 37:37Speaker 01

Hey. You know who they hired, right?

• 37:40Speaker 00

Yes, I just read that the other day.

• 37:42Speaker 01

Yeah, I just read it like yesterday. They hired the drummer from Nine Inch Nails for their next tour.

• 37:47Speaker 00

Yeah, that's the drummer you'd want.

• 37:48Speaker 01

  Yes, the drummer you'd want.

• 37:49Speaker 00

  Well done.

• 37:50Speaker 01

Well done Foo Fighters. That might be a, that might be a concert I might have to go to.

• 37:56Speaker 00

I, they're on my bucket list. I haven't got to see them yet.

• 37:59Speaker 01

I might have to remove the hearing aids for that one.

• 38:01Speaker 02

Speaking of bucket list and finances, are you guys going to be attending the 2028 Olympics?

• 38:07Speaker 01

Uh, probably not. I would love to.

• 38:10Speaker 00

I mean, are you taking me?

• 38:12Speaker 02

  No.

• 38:14Speaker 01

The traffic, the traffic is going to be a nuts.

• 38:17Speaker 02

Potential craziness, but I mean, this might be the last chance. In our backyard.

• 38:21Speaker 01

Well, isn't there, like, I heard that they were going to be taking and putting like a gondola between downtown LA up to Dodger Stadium for the baseball. Right?

• 38:30Speaker 00

I mean, I, I went to X games down in LA and that was insane. So I couldn't even imagine.

• 38:35Speaker 01

  Like the whole.

• 38:36Speaker 00

How the, uh, the Olympics would be.

• 38:39Speaker 01

Yeah, I, I, I heard something about there being some like massive gondola that was going to be going in for some kind of thing.

• 38:45Speaker 00

Just shut down the whole city.

• 38:46Speaker 01

Yeah. I remember living down there in 1984. I lived in Arcadia down in the, uh, San Gabriel Valley. Uh, I just dated myself. Sorry, guys.

• 38:57Speaker 01

And that was even living in the San Gabriel Valley as a, you know, six-year-old tyke. Remembering the traffic on the 210 just.

• 39:10Speaker 01

  Barf.

• 39:11Speaker 02

  Yeah, no thanks.

• 39:12Speaker 01

  It was a parking lot.

• 39:13Speaker 02

  No, thanks.

• 39:14Speaker 01

  Even then.

• 39:15Speaker 02

  We got another comment.

• 39:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:17Speaker 02

The econ class in high school is a joke, says this listener. And with millions of dollars in NIL slash college, it should be really more important in college as well. I agree. Uh, thank you, Money Wise, and I pass on your show to all of my friends and I've been listening for almost 10 years. That is awesome. Thank you for sharing.

• 39:35Speaker 01

Why have you not been listening for 23 years?

• 39:37Speaker 02

  Exactly. Exactly.

• 39:39Speaker 00

  Just date ourselves again?

• 39:42Speaker 02

Yeah, econ class was, I mean, it was a macroeconomics class. These are high, I mean, we're seniors.

• 39:48Speaker 01

  High, high level.

• 39:49Speaker 02

Seventeen and eighteen years old. You think you're gonna really absorb that information?

• 39:52Speaker 01

I, I liked it, but yeah, you're right. It's kind of ma- macro, microeconomics. It's, you don't, you don't really get into it until it's affects you.

• 40:03Speaker 02

Yep. I had Mr. Britton Stockdale and it was right after lunch. That could have had something to do with it.

• 40:08Speaker 01

My teacher was Ben Stein, so.

• 40:10Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 40:11Speaker 01

  Bueller.

• 40:12Speaker 02

  Bueller.

• 40:13Speaker 01

  Yeah. So.

• 40:15Speaker 02

We have time for this last zinger?

• 40:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:17Speaker 02

So this one, uh, listen close. It's a little hard to follow, but we're gonna slow it down. It says, I caught the episode yesterday and wanted to share. So, my wife lost her grandmother, very sorry for your loss, in February. And in the last few months, she started getting calls, the wife, from a credit card company wanting her to pay off a $7,500 debt that they are saying she owed. She didn't have a card with this company, but recently found out that her grandmother had her name on the card. Yikes. And we are trying to figure out what she can do to remove her name as she never agreed to be on the card in the first place. I'm gonna finish this out. These are their, their listeners' words, not mine, Justin.

• 41:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:00Speaker 02

Is there something she can do legally or maybe illegally? LOL.

• 41:06Speaker 01

  Nothing illegally.

• 41:07Speaker 02

We're, we're not gonna encourage you to do anything illegal. I'm not even sure what you could do, but we're, we're gonna put that one to rest.

• 41:13Speaker 01

I'm gonna put that one to rest.

• 41:13Speaker 02

We did a little homework for you.

• 41:15Speaker 01

  I would say this, um.

• 41:18Speaker 01

Request the credit card company to produce a document that has your signature with your authorization. Did I actually sign that document? If I didn't, then go pound sand.

• 41:28Speaker 00

  Yep.

• 41:29Speaker 01

Right? Second, if they still, uh, request and require you to try and pay off that debt, I would highly recommend giving our good friend Enselmo Moreno over at Credit Solutions a call.

• 41:43Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 41:43Speaker 01

What is his number, Steven? Do we have his number?

• 41:46Speaker 00

I will, I'll pass it on to them.

• 41:47Speaker 01

Yeah, pass it on to that, that guest. Um, yeah. Credit Solutions.

• 41:54Speaker 00

I actually talked to this listener off the air and she said she didn't even know anything about it until they went to buy a home.

• 42:02Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 42:03Speaker 00

Yeah. And then, uh, she thought these were just spam calls.

• 42:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:07Speaker 00

And you know, she said, you know, these spam calls are getting, you know, realer and realer that you don't know the difference.

• 42:13Speaker 01

Well, that takes me to my next thing here. Kern County Sheriff's Office, they're telling us we gotta watch out. Little scam alert there going on, Steve Z.

• 42:21Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 42:22Speaker 01

Well, scam alert. Uh, little scam alert coming on.

• 42:26Speaker 00

  Just record that.

• 42:27Speaker 01

Yeah, we, we got it. We got it. He's, he got it. Yep, there you go. Uh, so Kern County Sheriff's Office is warning of some impersonation, some phone scams going on here in Kern County. So fake deputies, real scams, how to protect yourself here. So, uh, they're warning residents about some scam calls from people falsely claiming to represent the department, the sheriff's department and requesting for pair, uh, for payments on certain various fabricated fines. So people are calling up saying that they're the sheriff, they're Sheriff Youngblood, they're Sheriff this, Sheriff that, or they're a representative or whatever. And they're saying, hey, you owe us such and such for this fine.

• 43:12Speaker 02

  Trash.

• 43:13Speaker 01

  Trash.

• 43:13Speaker 02

  Trash.

• 43:14Speaker 01

You're a trash individual. You're a garbage individual if you're calling people up and saying, "I'm the sheriff. Pay me."

• 43:19Speaker 02

And the problem is, is we still have, um, a whole generation that still is not quite with the internet. I'd be thinking maybe, and I'm not saying not lumping everyone together, but the majority of maybe 70 plus may not be as astute with the web and if they get a call, they ask the sheriff, they sound official, I can see how they could be duped. But again, pure slime.

• 43:42Speaker 01

So here's the thing. The only time you're really gonna pay a fee to the sheriff's department is usually in person.

• 43:48Speaker 02

  Yeah, in court.

• 43:49Speaker 01

In court, or you're going in to pick up your CCW, right? Or something like that, or you're getting your fingerprints taken or something like that. You're gonna be charged on-site when you're doing those things. It's not like you're gonna go home and get a bill. You're being charged on-site. You paid with a check or a debit card then, when you're there on-site. They're not calling you to get payment.

• 44:11Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 44:12Speaker 00

I just do what, uh, what I've been doing since Gero taught me.

• 44:15Speaker 01

  Hang up?

• 44:16Speaker 00

When you don't understand the, if you don't recognize the number, just answer it, "Hey, welcome to Movie Phone."

• 44:22Speaker 01

  Like Kramer.

• 44:23Speaker 00

For one, press comedy, you know, and just have fun with it.

• 44:25Speaker 01

If you know what you wanna watch, press two.

• 44:27Speaker 00

And if you, 90% of the time, they hang up on you.

• 44:30Speaker 02

Right. They don't wanna mess with it. It's just, they're sitting in a cube somewhere and, man, I had to do some of that in college. It's rough. But if you're suspicious, call Kern County Sheriff's Office directly, 661-861-3110 to verify the claim. Uh, KCSO says the sheriff's office, office, will never ask for payment over the phone or text. Um, they may contact you in person or mail. Yeah, that wouldn't be good. Now, if an actual Kern County sheriff shows up at your door, you should, yeah, it's a different story.

• 45:03Speaker 01

Different story. If they're showing up at your door.

• 45:04Speaker 02

Money Wise can help you at that point.

• 45:06Speaker 01

They're not looking for money. They're not looking for money at that point. It's more likely, you know, hey, there's an eviction notice your way. Yeah, um, yeah, that's different. Um, but hey, it's been a...

• 45:17Speaker 02

Way to bring awareness to that, though. Way to bring awareness.

• 45:19Speaker 01

You know, we're, we're, we're a public service. Um, yeah, just, if you get some scam calls like that, please don't.

• 45:31Speaker 00

Well, the last message said, um, what is a taco trade? That might be something I would be interested in. A great show and enjoy your weekend. Be smart, be safe, eat tacos.

• 45:42Speaker 02

That should be a bumper sticker.

• 45:42Speaker 01

That should be a bumper sticker. I like that. You know, I drive a Tacoma and I need to get the little sticker for the gas tank that says, uh, taco sauce only. Um, no, the taco trade, uh, sorry for the acronym. The acronym stands for Trump always chickens out. I know it's not a political show, but the purpose.

• 46:01Speaker 02

  Don't do it, Justin.

• 46:02Speaker 01

I don't, I'm not going to go there, but it is, um, it is a, it is a, it is a trade that people have mentioned uh, on Wall Street about, hey, he mentions, uh, tariffs, the markets go down. You sell before that happens. And then when he pauses or chickens out at the end, the 11th hour, the markets tend to rebound. It's the moniker is the taco trade. So that's what it is. And so we need some, uh, maybe we do need to make some bump, uh, money wise bumper stickers. The be smart, be safe, be money wise.

• 46:36Speaker 02

Something to, something to give us a push into the weekend. Best tacos in Bakersfield. Would love to hear from our listeners. You know, give us a shout.

• 46:42Speaker 01

New Astro Bakersfield, New Astro Mexico down, New Astro, uh, New Astro, Mexico down on 21st Street off of, uh, Q and, and 21st.

• 46:50Speaker 02

So we're going to be walking distance here in a couple of months?

• 46:52Speaker 01

Pretty much. Yeah. Best, best, best, uh, pastor tacos in town.

• 46:57Speaker 00

  I like Sancho's.

• 46:58Speaker 01

Sancho's is good. They're right down the street, right from there. But hey, man, it's, uh, it's been great doing a show with you, man.

• 47:04Speaker 02

Show with you finally. Man, that was awesome.

• 47:06Speaker 01

It's, you know, too bad the markets went down. We, I mean, we got the.

• 47:09Speaker 02

  Voice, man.

• 47:09Speaker 01

I had to get the, I had to get the jitters out, you know, and the, the markets had to get the jitters out for the first timer, you know, curse that I have.

• 47:17Speaker 02

  Could be a rebound coming.

• 47:18Speaker 01

But you know, hey, there's that rebound coming. But hey, we're taking it into the weekend. Uh, thank you to Gabriel and Jessica for coming in, talking about the, uh, back to school, uh, summer fest. You know, as always, we love you, taking you into the weekend. Be smart, be safe, be money wise. We'll see you next week.

• 47:35Speaker 02

  See y'all.
