  Latroy Dinkins.

• 1:08Speaker 00

  Latroy.

• 1:09Speaker 02

  What's going on, brother?

• 1:10Speaker 00

  It's been a minute.

• 1:11Speaker 02

Hey, it was last week, right?

• 1:12Speaker 00

I know. We had a great show last week.

• 1:14Speaker 02

  Yes, sir.

• 1:15Speaker 00

Got a bunch of things to talk about last week. We have a great show ahead today. We have a bunch of subjects. So, let's start. How did we do today on the market?

• 1:24Speaker 02

Pretty flat, I'd say, for the most. I mean, it shows a little bit of red, but, you know, we're coming off a very resilient, you know, month, you know, or, you know, quarter. You know, we've just been going up. Everything is looking good. There were some new, some talks, which we'll get into.

• 1:42Speaker 00

  Yeah, we'll get into that.

• 1:43Speaker 02

President Xi, I don't even know how to pronounce the guy's name.

• 1:45Speaker 00

  Xi.

• 1:46Speaker 02

  President Xi Jinping.

• 1:47Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:48Speaker 02

President Xi and Trump. So, you know, that's, that's kind of going into the right direction. But everything is good right now with the markets.

• 1:55Speaker 00

That's good. That's good. I'm glad. I'm glad. So, part of the show is we get a lot of questions and our listeners are involved. So, keep, keep that and keep the questions coming. We have one today. You want to get, listen to you guys discuss the refineries closing and for everyone to expect a hit at the pump, but our drivers essentially held hostage by a handful of refineries. Sound like something the state can prepare us for.

• 2:21Speaker 00

Um, I don't think we're held hostages by a handful of refineries. I think we're held hostage by some of the policies that the state has enacted in the last, I would say twenty years regarding oil, oil production, oil refining. And, and that's, as a result of that, we are now having two major refineries uh, uh, potentially closing doors in twenty twenty six, a year from now. What does that mean to us?

• 2:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 2:46Speaker 00

It's about twenty percent of the refining capacity in this state is about to be lost. Okay, so for you and I, you know, you have a big old car. I have a big old car and I'm with that. I know, why, why do you hate it? Because

• 2:59Speaker 02

Ten, ten miles, uh, uh, to a gallon.

• 3:02Speaker 00

Well, you're gonna hate it some more when prices are about eight dollars to ten dollars a gallon.

• 3:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:06Speaker 00

Right? So that's, that's, that's a potential reality for us, the state of California, if things don't change. If the governor's not changed some of the rules, some of the things he's got, and some of the moratoriums he's got on oil drilling and oil production here in this state. While we're importing a lot of our oil from overseas, especially the

• 3:25Speaker 02

  Russia, right?

• 3:27Speaker 00

No, we, we import a lot from Latin America, from the jungles of Latin America, countries like Venezuela. Uh, uh, and, and, and that's, that's the new reality. Just as a comparison, our current average price per gallon is four dollars and eighty five cents. That's a dollar sixty nine higher than the national average. Why? Because we pay a lot of taxes at the pump, you and I.

• 3:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:49Speaker 00

You know, I, I'm, I'm not against that because we have freeways.

• 3:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 3:53Speaker 00

And, and, and, but our infrastructure is gonna suffer if, if people drive less. And/or we go strictly into an EV type of atmosphere. How are we gonna collect these taxes to maintain our infrastructure is the big question I have. And I don't think our government has an answer. I'm talking about the state government, government. You know, so that's one of the, the, the things that might happen is a spike in the, uh, oil, the gas prices at the pump.

• 4:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:21Speaker 00

But then there's an economic ripple effect that could, I mean, lot of gallons lost from a production standpoint that creates a lot of taxes and, and tax revenues for the local economies.

• 4:35Speaker 00

It's really not an ideal situation for us. So I go back to the listeners question saying stating that we're hostages to the refineries. I don't think so, and not that I am pro refinery.

• 4:49Speaker 02

  It's a policy.

• 4:50Speaker 00

It's the policies because as a business, a refinery can only do so much. And if it's restricted by the government, then there's no other choice but move that operation somewhere else. And the state that has been benefiting a lot from us closing down our oil production is the state of Texas.

• 5:09Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 5:10Speaker 00

Yeah, because they are pro oil drilling, pro oil production.

• 5:14Speaker 02

Yeah, no, I mean. Like we used to be. That's why we gotta.

• 5:19Speaker 00

  Like we should be.

• 5:19Speaker 02

I think out here in California, we the only ones that gotta get, if we need small checks, we gotta get them, right? Like California is real big on small checks. I know other states aren't really.

• 5:27Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah, there's, and there's, I mean, when you go to the oil field itself. Like we go to the patch and you see the operation here versus Texas, there's a little bit more, not freedom, but just leeway. We're very stringent in this state, very stringent. And that's one of the reasons why these refineries, amongst other decisions that the state has made, why they decided to, hey, you know what? Maybe it's time for us to go somewhere else. So there's, there's some talk about these refineries just going across the border to another state and still pipe some of this gas over. It's still not ideal. Really, we need to reimagine our, our policies and, and, and see what we can do

• 6:11Speaker 00

in order for us to keep that capacity here at this state because job creation, tax creation, and just ease for the drivers in general in the state is what we really, really want.

• 6:21Speaker 02

  Is your truck hybrid?

• 6:23Speaker 00

Mine, no, mine is diesel. I moved into a diesel truck. It gives me a lot more. I'm at 22 miles per gallon now versus 10 with my.

• 6:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:32Speaker 00

  Trail boss.

• 6:35Speaker 02

  That's for the birds.

• 6:36Speaker 00

You know, and, and it's, and it's a lot more comfortable too, so.

• 6:39Speaker 02

  I love it.

• 6:40Speaker 00

And I love big trucks, man.

• 6:41Speaker 02

Yeah, no, I like your truck, man, yeah.

• 6:44Speaker 00

Yeah, so, um, thanks, thanks for the, thanks for the questions. We have another question. I think this one is for, is for you. Is my state P E R S pension counting towards the earnings test?

• 6:58Speaker 02

Keyword in there is earnings test. So that means if, if it's earned income, meaning that you're laboring for the money. So pensions aren't constituted as earned income. So it, it, it doesn't go under that earnings test. Um, so anything that goes into this earnings test, if you're, if you start collecting social security, the easy way I can explain this. Is that let's say, uh, you start, you go into getting your social security, let's say your social security is $2,000 and you take it early. At the age of 62, you get a $2,000 social security and then there's a certain threshold. That you, you can't make over, uh, like for, if you're under full retirement age, which is 66 or 67, depending on the year you were born.

• 7:40Speaker 02

That threshold is 22,320. So any dollars that exceed past that 22,320 dollars. Um, you get for every, for every dollar. You, for every $2 you make, you, you get taxed at a $1 hit. So that means that if you make, let's say 70,000, right? And then that's $50,000 over that limit. So basically if you're receiving $2,000 a month, which is $24,000 a year. 50,000, you take, you cut that in half, that's pretty much your whole social security is penalized. So it's a penalty. But whenever you reach full retirement age, which is 66 or 67, depending on the year you were born.

• 8:23Speaker 02

Then you, you can work all you want to, you know, you won't be subject to the earnings test. The reason why they run those earnings tests? Because they don't want people, you know, making a certain amount of money. And while, you know, getting, receiving that social security benefit. So there's, there's the guardrail.

• 8:41Speaker 00

Well, thanks for the answer. Keep these questions coming. Another top story, I want to talk to you specifically Troy about this, and that's the NCAA 2.8 billion dollar payout ruling.

• 8:52Speaker 02

  Oh, yes.

• 8:52Speaker 00

That took place. I want to talk to you specifically because you played college football.

• 8:55Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 8:56Speaker 00

  Right?

• 8:57Speaker 02

It only stems from people from 2016 to current.

• 9:00Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 9:01Speaker 02

  Yeah. And it's a 10-year payout period.

• 9:03Speaker 00

So, so people that played between, that played between 20, you said 2016?

• 9:08Speaker 02

  2016 and current.

• 9:08Speaker 00

And current, even, even past players are eligible for some type of a payout from the 2.8 billion dollars?

• 9:15Speaker 02

Yeah. And they, they plan on exhausting it for, I believe, 10 years. It's going to take them 10 years.

• 9:20Speaker 00

That's good news for the players. I mean, not going back all the way to 80s and 70s or whatever, but...

• 9:26Speaker 02

  Oh, they'd be in trouble.

• 9:27Speaker 00

Right? That's, NCAA would be bankrupt, whatever.

• 9:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:32Speaker 00

  But that's, that's good news.

• 9:34Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 9:35Speaker 00

Now, now there's some other things. You were on the radio show with, with our own Stephen this morning, and you talked about the impact of this, but also how schools are going to be paying athletes going forward. So are we moving from being an amateur type of college sports into a professional atmosphere going forward?

• 9:51Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 9:52Speaker 00

  Is that what's happening?

• 9:53Speaker 02

I mean, that's why they didn't pay them before is because they was, they were considered amateurs. Now that they're starting to pay these players on, on a college level, now it's like, okay, what, what do you label them? You know, as amateur or a professional? I guess you can label them now as a professional.

• 10:09Speaker 00

Now, now I have another question. If they are getting paid, are they still, well, I guess, I'm answering my own question, they'll still be eligible for the endorsement?

• 10:16Speaker 02

Yeah, they still get the NIL, like the sponsorships and things of that nature. That's, that's what the NIL was, basically. But now with that, you know, you're, you're, the schools, they have, um, they have a bucket of money, I think it's 20.5 mil, that they're, like, on an annual budget? That they're able to give athletes on campus. And it's to their discretion, basically, whoever they see as valuable athletes. But there is some sort of title out there that says, hey, you know, um, we can't just give it to all male sports, you know, we, we got to spread the wealth. So there's, there's that there. But there's some, there's some things that they got to refine, you know, uh, with this, with this initiative, so. It's interesting.

• 10:59Speaker 00

So, good news for the former athletes that did not take advantage.

• 11:03Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 11:03Speaker 00

And, you know, and some others that took advantage of the NIL.

• 11:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:06Speaker 00

Now they're gonna at least get a piece of this action.

• 11:09Speaker 02

Yeah, like I was saying earlier too, I, I, I think that, um, I wouldn't be surprised if there's a lot of people knocking on these universities doors trying to, you know, get in there to educate some of these young student athletes, you know, how to deal with money.

• 11:22Speaker 00

Yeah, which is a subject we always talk about here at Money Wise.

• 11:25Speaker 02

We can dive deeper into that.

• 11:26Speaker 00

Educating our youth about finances and how to prep them for the adult.

• 11:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:31Speaker 00

Life. Great, thanks, thanks Troy for those answers. We have a comment from a listener. Is that Gero's laugh at the beginning? I love it, but got me with that one. Prayer sent. That's, thank you.

• 11:44Speaker 02

It gets us all the time.

• 11:45Speaker 00

It gets me every time I'm on the radio show.

• 11:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:48Speaker 00

Yeah, and, and, and, uh, thanks for the prayers, uh, uh, uh, and Gero is, uh, still a fixture here at Money Wise. We had him, uh, come actually for our picnic about a month ago, Stephen.

• 11:59Speaker 02

  No.

• 12:00Speaker 00

Um, so, so he's, he's doing good, uh, given the circumstances, uh, he's still part of the Money Wise family. So we'll definitely take the prayers and we'll definitely keep those laughs coming.

• 12:13Speaker 02

  Oh, yes.

• 12:14Speaker 00

  As, as we go.

• 12:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, I miss him.

• 12:16Speaker 00

Stephen, we'll take our first break. When we come back, we've got multiple subjects to talk about. We'll be right back.

• 12:21Speaker 01

Are you curious to learn more about how you can be money wise? Check out the Money Wise website at MoneyWiseGuys.com to get more info about what we do.

• 12:38Speaker 00

  Troy, we're back.

• 12:39Speaker 02

  So.

• 12:41Speaker 00

Money Wise, uh, radio show. I've got a couple of things, just, just an update, and then I want to dive into this, uh, summer subject that, uh, I think will be.

• 12:48Speaker 02

  Oh, it's gonna be fun.

• 12:49Speaker 00

And also interesting to talk about.

• 12:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:51Speaker 00

Uh, Meta announced a $14 billion investment in Scale AI. That's just, to me, that's just shows AI push.

• 12:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:59Speaker 00

And, and, and, and going, going forward. I also think that. It's it's good for new graduates and people that with with computer degrees that hey, this is where the future is going. So be smart about where you invest your time, your energy, your degree.

• 13:14Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:15Speaker 00

That that that's great. The other company, American company that's announced $4 billion of investment in U. S. Manufacturers, G. M. Spring Hill, Fairfax and Orion Township plants are going to be retooled about $300,000 more vehicles a year. Why? Well, they want to shield themselves from any tariff and tariff strategies and disturbance that they might have in the future. Great for for us here in America as far as job creation and and American jobs. I still think we might not have the job impact that that's being set here because a lot of this

• 13:54Speaker 00

jobs, a lot of this stuff is going to be robot operated versus human operated.

• 14:01Speaker 02

Well, yeah, I think you need some discretion behind the A. I.

• 14:06Speaker 00

  Correct, correct.

• 14:07Speaker 02

It takes human, you know, that that's you remember that list we were looking at? The top 10 career fields like to go to school for?

• 14:14Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 14:14Speaker 02

And number one was what? Computer science or A. I. You know, that's basically it, you know? So it's it's very important.

• 14:22Speaker 00

Yeah. Another another deal today. I think there's a lot of progress being done between our government and the Chinese government regarding our negotiation, tariff negotiation happening right now in London.

• 14:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:35Speaker 00

So I think there is the market is reacting positively to that. Hopefully, we have a long term resolution to this.

• 14:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:42Speaker 00

I think the Chinese are open, and I think even President President Trump knows the importance of this. So hopefully, we have truth.

• 14:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:51Speaker 00

Hopefully, we have a long term deal.

• 14:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:55Speaker 00

That that just put would put us all at ease, especially the markets.

• 14:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, definitely.

• 15:00Speaker 00

  Going forward.

• 15:00Speaker 02

Yeah, it was positive conversations about like, what they call it rare earth minerals?

• 15:05Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 15:06Speaker 02

And, you know, that that was just the catalyst to say, hey, you know, we're in the works of moving in the right direction with China. You know, it was kind of like one of those. Uh, uh, it was like a hug, you know?

• 15:17Speaker 00

  Yep.

• 15:17Speaker 02

Let's just hug this thing out.

• 15:19Speaker 00

  Hug it out.

• 15:19Speaker 02

Hug it out, be cool, and, and let's figure this out together, you know? So that's, that's positive news, you know?

• 15:24Speaker 00

  I, I don't think they hugged though.

• 15:26Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, they didn't.

• 15:26Speaker 00

It was more of that, that Kung Fu, this bow. That's, that's probably what happened. I don't know about the hug, man.

• 15:35Speaker 02

But that's good. I mean, it's, it's a good catalyst. We need this.

• 15:38Speaker 00

So, so we all, three of us, Steven, yourself, myself, we all have boys in our lives that are raising as future men and good men, hopefully. Uh, summer brings an extra expense. These boys are now at home.

• 15:51Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 15:52Speaker 00

And because they are bored out of their minds, AC is at seventy versus seventy-eight.

• 15:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:56Speaker 00

Uh, water is running, they're running the tub every day.

• 15:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:59Speaker 00

I want to talk about how to manage your utility bills during the summer when your kids are out of school.

• 16:05Speaker 02

Man, I'll tell you what, I'm gonna throw my kids under the bus. Now, uh, but see, you guys both got one.

• 16:13Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 16:14Speaker 02

I got three. And so these little jokers, uh.

• 16:16Speaker 00

  Stop showing off now.

• 16:17Speaker 02

  They can't.

• 16:21Speaker 02

They can't like share anymore. Like, these kids don't share anymore. You know what I'm saying? They gotta.

• 16:25Speaker 00

  They gotta have their own.

• 16:26Speaker 02

Their own, their own TV, their own computer, you know? I got, you know, Xbox, PS5, and all this different gadgets in the house. Uh, you know, everybody's just in their own corner and doing their own thing and just watching TV and watch, oh, I gotta watch this show.

• 16:40Speaker 00

Do you see an uptick in your utility bill in the summer?

• 16:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:44Speaker 00

  Yeah?

• 16:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:46Speaker 00

  I did too.

• 16:46Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:47Speaker 00

I'm gonna throw, like you, I'm gonna follow your lead and throw my kid under the bus. And my water bill was like two hundred fifty dollars. And I know because the bill now is so sophisticated, it tells you when you're running the water, right?

• 16:58Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 16:58Speaker 00

It's about the time he comes back from practice.

• 17:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:01Speaker 00

And, and, and he runs the, the, the tub and he fills up the tub and gets in.

• 17:06Speaker 02

Who would've thought a water bill would be more than a electric bill?

• 17:08Speaker 00

  I'm telling you.

• 17:09Speaker 02

  Solar, right?

• 17:10Speaker 00

Yeah, because it's, it's a lot more than my electrical bill, which is.

• 17:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:15Speaker 00

I, I wanna pay no bill. Cause I have solar. But I still pay because, you know, the AC is at seventy.

• 17:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:22Speaker 00

He does not wanna just have like a one, one, one, doesn't wanna sweat, he doesn't want, he wants to be comfortable. Seventy is the comfort. And I'm like, how are we doing this?

• 17:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:33Speaker 00

How are we doing this? Steven?

• 17:36Speaker 00

What's hap- what's happening in your, in your house?

• 17:38Speaker 01

Same? I still have to get, yeah, same, exactly. I still have to get on my boy, cause uh, I come home, I have to get on my wife too, so it's not just him. Because she'll, she'll get home and, you know, she'll have three, four lights on and she's not in the same rooms and she's starting up the washer and dryer. I'm like, hey, hey, hey, hey. You don't do it in certain amount of time when it's super hot. Wait until it cools off a little bit.

• 18:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:00Speaker 00

Yeah, so, so I agree with you and I think there's a little bit of some things you can do to manage your, your, your utility bill, or at least help it to reduce the cost. Raise the thermostat to seventy-eight degree Fahrenheit, close the blinds and use fan. Now I do that. But guess what? I'm not at the house during the day.

• 18:18Speaker 01

It's the blinds. I tell her all the time.

• 18:21Speaker 00

Yeah, they want the natural light.

• 18:23Speaker 01

But I want the, the plants won't grow. I want to put them outside.

• 18:27Speaker 02

You know, you better be careful, man. You ain't gonna get no food when you go home, bro.

• 18:30Speaker 01

  Well, she's at a meeting, I checked.

• 18:33Speaker 02

I'm gonna send, I'm gonna send her the podcast notes.

• 18:37Speaker 00

Yeah, it's, it's, it's just some, some, some things that.

• 18:39Speaker 01

Well, that's when you catch yourself sounding like your dad or your parents.

• 18:42Speaker 02

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 18:44Speaker 01

Cause I'm saying the same thing my parents were telling me at this age. I'm like, okay. You know those commercials where you're like, catch yourself talking like your,

• 18:51Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 18:51Speaker 01

your parents and that's, that's where I'm at.

• 18:53Speaker 02

Well, see, my kids, it's summertime and they stay up until like two o'clock in the morning. That, that right there, I can't fight that because I'm asleep. So it's kinda like, it's kinda like a boxer in the ring getting wore out, you know, I, you know, I try to manage when I can, but sometimes I fall asleep and then they're up. I wake up to go use the bathroom. I'm like, what the heck? Like the lights are on and the TV loud. I'm like, turn this crap off. Go to sleep.

• 19:14Speaker 00

But, but also, but also this, this in addition to all of this, do you see your fridge getting, has to be refilled every two days?

• 19:23Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 19:24Speaker 00

And do you have the same thing when your son or your sons go and open the fridge and just stare at it for like five minutes?

• 19:30Speaker 01

Like it's gonna, like it's gonna grow something?

• 19:34Speaker 02

I ain't gonna lie though, I'll do the same thing sometimes.

• 19:39Speaker 00

What snack can I get my hands on?

• 19:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, that's.

• 19:42Speaker 01

I always tell him like, hey, it hasn't changed in the last 15 minutes, dude. The same crap is still in there.

• 19:49Speaker 01

And I I take him to the grocery store with me now, because I'm like, if you see something, grab it now.

• 19:55Speaker 00

  Just grab it.

• 19:55Speaker 01

Yeah, don't wait, because I'm not going to a special trip because you are out of, you know, these damn dips granola bars or whatever it is and yeah.

• 20:06Speaker 02

Let me ask you this question, Sammy, because this is one, I know this is a tactic. Well, they say it's a tactic to save an energy. Is to unplug everything. Is it worth me going around my house unplugging everything out of the wall?

• 20:19Speaker 00

  That's a waste of time.

• 20:20Speaker 02

It's a waste of time, right?

• 20:21Speaker 00

It's a waste of time, Sammy. You just said you sleep at night and your kids are up until two.

• 20:24Speaker 02

  Right.

• 20:24Speaker 00

How are you gonna unplug? You don't unplug. My house dog doesn't get up.

• 20:29Speaker 02

  That's a recommendation?

• 20:30Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah, but I think I think if you're living, just you and your wife, maybe, but that's not the case for us. We have three growing boys. It's that's, I mean, yours are up until, my mind, I think the saving for me, saving grace for me is that he's got practice now between the hours of six and eight and it's hot. And he comes home exhausted, so he sleeps around 10:30. He's like on the couch.

• 20:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:53Speaker 00

So I have to get him up and take him to bed.

• 20:56Speaker 02

Yeah, those, they still cut, they turn up the rates around four o'clock still, right?

• 21:01Speaker 00

Yes, yes. So thermostat, 78 degrees if you can. Smart thermostat at that, move LED to LED lights. I think there's some programs through PG&E actually incentives to do that and you can get some tax rebates too.

• 21:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:19Speaker 00

And I think my wife told me that there's some programs where PG&E actually can come in and change all your light, light fixtures for free.

• 21:26Speaker 02

  Four, three, four years ago?

• 21:28Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 21:28Speaker 02

  Somewhere like that, yeah.

• 21:30Speaker 00

And there's a lot of rebates, like if you have a house and somebody within the house is using like a CPAP machine or some type of breathing machine.

• 21:38Speaker 02

  Oh, you get.

• 21:38Speaker 00

You get, you get a rebate for that as well. So take advantage of all these rebates and, and, and. You know, good luck, especially if you have kids.

• 21:48Speaker 02

Yeah, I wish my water bill is higher than my electric bill.

• 21:53Speaker 00

Steven, we'll take another break. When we're back, we'll talk a little bit more about unplug-in from technology and how we can do that.

• 22:00Speaker 01

Steven is getting us cultured here.

• 22:33Speaker 01

  This one's catchy, man.

• 22:34Speaker 00

It's a catchy rhythm, yeah. Yeah, it's a catchy. He's got a beautiful voice, too. If you understand French or Arabic like I do, it's

• 22:44Speaker 01

  More money, more problems.

• 22:47Speaker 00

Yeah, he did a song with French Montana. And it's really, really cool. I think this is the one you're playing right now.

• 22:54Speaker 02

  I wish I could say.

• 22:57Speaker 00

  I mean, you can.

• 22:59Speaker 02

  It sounds good, you know?

• 23:01Speaker 00

You and I both can. It just don't sound good.

• 23:05Speaker 01

  Without auto-tune?

• 23:06Speaker 02

  Without auto-tune, right?

• 23:10Speaker 00

All right, we're back. Money Wise Show. There's a lot of talk right now about the big, beautiful bill, right?

• 23:18Speaker 02

You're talking about the NCAA bill?

• 23:20Speaker 00

No, I'm talking about the big, beautiful. It's huge, huge.

• 23:24Speaker 02

The NCAA one's a big, beautiful.

• 23:26Speaker 00

So the impact to me, as an ex-banker, is like, how is that going to affect interest rates in general? And it's pushing the 10-year Treasury higher, which would impact

• 23:38Speaker 00

People like you and I, because we have mortgages and especially people that are just now trying to buy a house. So the thirty year fixed mortgage raised rates are definitely heavily influenced by the ten year treasury bond. Because both they are long term loans and investors use treasuries as benchmarks when pricing mortgage backed securities. And and and when the ten year yield rises, the lenders, they have to raise their rates so they can remain competitive, correct?

• 24:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:08Speaker 00

So as a comparison, I think today we we have the ten year yield is at four point five. A thirty year mortgage is nearing seven point two to seven point four. That's up from six point five earlier this year. That's almost one point differential. What's a one point differential on a four hundred thousand, which is the median price? It's about three hundred dollars a month.

• 24:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's huge.

• 24:30Speaker 00

That you take away from your groceries, savings, things that you want to do. Especially when you have three boys, I mean, you have three boys, Troy, so so a three hundred bucks can have an impact.

• 24:42Speaker 02

  A huge impact.

• 24:43Speaker 00

A huge impact on on families and their and their spending. So there's there's definitely an impact that we we might see if this bill moves forward. Uh, through the bond pricing, bond rates.

• 24:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:57Speaker 00

And more importantly, our mortgage backed securities and the mortgage rates we're gonna see in the market.

• 25:01Speaker 02

Speaking of mortgages, though, let me ask you this, Sammy.

• 25:04Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 25:05Speaker 02

People who, because there's a lot of people who are in a market of getting HELOCs and and things of that nature.

• 25:09Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 25:10Speaker 02

And are some like, what does something like this do? Is is some of these HELOCs callable? Like where the banks can say, hey, you know what, let's, you know,

• 25:22Speaker 02

put the money back on your credit line and we'll we'll call it back or whatever. Is that is it at all possible?

• 25:27Speaker 00

If you have a zero balance HELOC, the bank can decide if it sees that the risk increases, their risk increases, they can, yes, they can call. It's part of your promise or note and and and loan agreement. You have to read the fine prints, okay? It is, however, it's state by state, like in this great state of California, which is consumer, more consumer and retail oriented, it's a little bit.

• 25:52Speaker 00

tougher for banks to do things like that and pull things like that.

• 25:55Speaker 02

Yeah, so it's rare, it's very rare.

• 25:57Speaker 00

Yes, and but we've seen it happen. When the market crashed in two thousand eight and people had HELOCs. The bank just said, hey, they send a letter like, hey, you don't have access to this HELOC anymore. Rightfully so, though.

• 26:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:09Speaker 00

A house was worth six hundred thousand dollars. You have a mortgage for three hundred and a HELOC for one fifty. Now the house is worth three hundred. The bank cannot lend more than what the house is worth.

• 26:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:20Speaker 00

They will be called by the regulators for doing something like that.

• 26:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:24Speaker 00

So, yes, there is a risk of the line being pulled away from you.

• 26:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:29Speaker 00

Right, but I always say, if you have the ability to have a HELOC and you use it for the right things. I encourage you to have it.

• 26:38Speaker 02

  What are those right things?

• 26:40Speaker 00

What comes to mind like is is.

• 26:41Speaker 02

Have you got like a high interest bearing debt?

• 26:43Speaker 00

Correct, so let's. Correct, so you can pay off your high, high interest credit cards, for instance, but you gotta be disciplined.

• 26:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:50Speaker 00

About having a payment plan when you have a HELOC.

• 26:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:54Speaker 00

Now, there's some banks that offer you a fixed payment, like it's a mortgage, like almost a second mortgage.

• 27:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:00Speaker 00

Right on your house. So what you do is you get the HELOC and you use it so you can take advantage of the interest write off. For instance, let's say you're gonna go and finance, you have, you're a W two employee. But you wanna finance a car. That interest on the car is not tax deductible unless you're a business.

• 27:21Speaker 02

  Cause it depreciates.

• 27:23Speaker 00

Yeah, but also it's because you're a consumer, you're not a business. The tax rules are different between the individual and the business, right?

• 27:30Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 27:30Speaker 00

But if you use your HELOC to finance your car, now that interest is tax deductible.

• 27:37Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, goes on an itemized tax deduction.

• 27:40Speaker 00

Right, so, so you can take advantage of that if you have the ability to, or you have equity on your house to do something.

• 27:46Speaker 02

Dang, that's cold, you know what, that's.

• 27:48Speaker 00

So I've, that's what I've done in the past is when I used my HELOC to finance my car. So I can take advantage of the tax write off on the interest.

• 27:55Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 27:56Speaker 00

Expense, which, you know, when you're, now I have, I have a side corporation and what have you. So I can take advantage of some, some things because I have a side hustle, like, you know.

• 28:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:05Speaker 00

I do my own thing with my brother and all that. But it's, HELOC is, is a good tool if you use it effectively.

• 28:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:13Speaker 00

Now, if you get the HELOC. And you go shopping spree, you know, buying Louis Vuittons and Rolexes and boats and things that it's just not to me.

• 28:25Speaker 02

Now you had more debt and that you gotta pay.

• 28:27Speaker 00

Yeah, no, I've seen, look, I've seen a lot of successful business owners in my banking career using their HELOCs to start and supplement their business.

• 28:35Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 28:36Speaker 00

And then they, it takes off and eventually they pay that stuff off, right? They have a dream of owning a business or starting a company or having a great, an idea. How do they finance that? They finance it through some of the equity that they have in the house. It's a risky move.

• 28:51Speaker 02

So these HELOCs are also affected by the thirty year, because the thirty year mortgage is starting to creep up now, right?

• 28:57Speaker 00

  They can.

• 28:58Speaker 02

So those are a little bit higher than the thirty year.

• 29:00Speaker 00

So the HELOC could be financed through two different ways. A variable rate, either tied to prime or some type, a different type of variable rate that the banks have. Or they can fix the rate for you. You know, there's banks that actually wants you say, hey, I want a HELOC. Hundred fifty thousand dollars, you take the hundred fifty and you invest it. Maybe you build a pool. Right? You add value to your house. Maybe you do other things like you finance a car and then like, you know what? Now, I don't, I've done all my projects. Now I want this thing to be put on a payment plan. Then they fix the rate for you and you have a ten year or whatever to pay it back.

• 29:39Speaker 02

Because normally, like when you get a HELOC, it's, it's, it's very, it's like, there's no term on it because like a credit card, you just gotta.

• 29:45Speaker 00

Yeah, it's interest only payments for a long period of time, right? A lot of people finance their lifestyle through that, especially when they reach a certain age and they know, you know what? This is part of my retirement. My kids are gonna inherit the house. I'm gonna get the HELOC. I'm gonna live off that. And eventually when I pass, the house has enough equity to pay off the first and the second mortgage and maybe there's some leftover for my kids to inherit.

• 30:07Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 30:09Speaker 00

Okay, so, so it's, it's, it's, it's a good tool in the right hands.

• 30:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:13Speaker 00

If, but if you use it, you know, just be disciplined about the repayment capacity and how you repay your, your, um, your, your, your loan, like any other loan for that matter. But that one, because it has the flexibility and the interest only, some people go the undisciplined route.

• 30:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:31Speaker 00

And it comes, it can bite you.

• 30:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:33Speaker 00

Yeah, it can bite. Any other questions on, on?

• 30:36Speaker 02

We got some que- actually questions. Well, we got some statements here. The first statement says, oh my God, my thirteen year old leaves every light on with the fan on under the blanket. Yeah, might as you too. I'm like, dude, you shouldn't be under the blanket with a fan on in a, you know, beep, summer L O L. I don't know if I can say damn on the radio.

• 30:53Speaker 00

  You just did.

• 30:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:56Speaker 01

Boom. Hit that dumb button. I'm just playing. My son does the same thing. I go in and I'm like, dude, do you really, are you really under the blanket? Yes. It's a hundred and one outside?

• 31:07Speaker 00

  Yes, yes.

• 31:09Speaker 01

  The life, right?

• 31:10Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 31:10Speaker 01

  Get a job.

• 31:11Speaker 00

That's right. And we have another one.

• 31:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:14Speaker 00

I have three daughters. I would trade them for your three boys. I'm nervous to even look at our energy bill this summer, but they at least, gas isn't ten dollar yet. That's true.

• 31:25Speaker 02

Can I say something? I bet you your daughters are very clean. My, my kids don't clean up for ish.

• 31:31Speaker 02

You know? They don't. They dirty.

• 31:33Speaker 00

Uh, boys, they're boys, man, and, and daughters and girls in general, they're, they're, they're cleaner.

• 31:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:40Speaker 00

And, and, and, and also they listen more, I think.

• 31:44Speaker 02

  They do.

• 31:45Speaker 00

You know, and, and they don't just like stare back at you like you did, you just said something like, what did that? You know, so I'm, I'm.

• 31:53Speaker 01

My son, I'm about to backhand him because he, he does the, he does the huh, huh, huh? I'm like, dude, I know you hear me.

• 32:01Speaker 00

  Yep.

• 32:01Speaker 01

  Huh?

• 32:02Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 32:02Speaker 01

It's like he immediately says huh before I even finish my sentence.

• 32:06Speaker 00

Yeah, that's, that's the new thing that just, just like if.

• 32:08Speaker 01

And I would never strike my child. I'm just.

• 32:10Speaker 00

  I, I know.

• 32:11Speaker 01

It was one of my pet peeves.

• 32:12Speaker 00

I just look at him. I just look at my son and like, man, you're lucky you did not grow up in Morocco.

• 32:17Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 32:18Speaker 02

They use sandals out there. I seen those papas out there.

• 32:21Speaker 00

Not just any sandals, brother. Those plastic sandals from China. They stink.

• 32:26Speaker 02

To use a sandal? I always see sandal. Even like grownups, when they start fighting, they use sandals. They be smacking each other with sandals.

• 32:32Speaker 00

Remember, uh, President Bush, when he was in Iraq, he got, he got shot at by the shoe.

• 32:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:37Speaker 00

Yeah, the shoe is a universal punishment tool. And, and, and that part of the world, man. If you have not tasted that, you did not grow up in, in, in that part of the world. Uh-uh.

• 32:48Speaker 02

  Yeah. Don't, don't spirit a sandal.

• 32:50Speaker 00

Oh, my God. Great conversation, great conversation. Uh, Stephen, we'll take one last break and when we're back, we'll talk about another subject that's dear to us.

• 32:59Speaker 01

Are you nearing retirement and currently working with a financial advisor? Are you not sure if you're invested appropriately? Call our offices at 661-847-1000 to sit down with a Money Wise financial advisor for a no obligation assessment of your investment.

• 33:25Speaker 02

You gotta dance better than that, Sammy, for the ancestors. Come on, man.

• 33:29Speaker 01

Before he throws a sandal at you.

• 33:31Speaker 00

Put me, put me, put me on a dance floor.

• 33:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:35Speaker 00

I'm sitting down, man. Come on.

• 33:36Speaker 02

Sammy was over here pop lock.

• 33:37Speaker 00

  Give me a break.

• 33:39Speaker 01

And I will tell you guys, once you bring up power, PG&E, bills, solar, any of that, it always hits with listeners. We always get a ton of messages, which I really appreciate, but with, uh, when you live in the valley like this, man, that hits a nerve.

• 33:58Speaker 00

Yeah. So we have, we have another comment or maybe, maybe a question from a listener. Do you guys happen to know how long you pay the true up bill when you get solar? We got solar last summer, so this is the first time we've had to pay it, but it was a bit, I was a bit shocked on how much it was. And now they want me to get more panels. Also, is there any rebates on adding more panels for people that need to add on?

• 34:27Speaker 00

Very good question. So if you put your solar last summer, you are on, potentially on the NEM3, net metering.

• 34:38Speaker 02

  Something.

• 34:38Speaker 00

Something. So, there's three NEMs. NEM one, where, like Sherid, our boss, has NEM one. Actually PG&E pays him at the end of the year.

• 34:50Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 34:50Speaker 00

Because the rate at which he's getting electricity from the grid and the one he's exporting to the grid are almost the same or identical. Then you have NEM two, when PG&E wakes, woke up and says, "Well, no, that's not fair to us. We, you export at a certain rate,

• 35:10Speaker 00

but you, when we buy from you, it's a much lower rate." And it was still advantageous to people. Now, fast forward to NEM three. Right? That's what I have in my current house, for which PG&E, if you're a household, you actually have to have a battery or batteries in order for you to store electricity because there was so much surplus going into the grid. They wanted that household to just store it.

• 35:39Speaker 02

  In battery.

• 35:40Speaker 00

In the battery and just spend it. But here's the, here's the deal. On the NEM three, I import at about 22 cents, a kilowatt.

• 35:51Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 35:52Speaker 00

And I export at 11 cents.

• 35:56Speaker 00

So, I still have to pay money.

• 35:58Speaker 02

  11 cents, 11 cents difference.

• 35:59Speaker 00

Yes, because it, there's a huge difference between the money I pay when I import electricity from the grid versus when I sell it to the grid.

• 36:08Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 36:09Speaker 00

Right? And you have to pay attention to your bill. So, for the listener, take a look at your bill, and there is some tools at the PG&E website where you can actually project your consumption. Then you can see what your true up is going to be. I'm hoping I'm answering, I'm answering the question. My guess is, yes, you will have, you can take advantage of additional rebates on any panels you add to your existing solar. Because you're just improving your solar system.

• 36:40Speaker 02

  Gotcha.

• 36:41Speaker 00

So, I don't know if you're buying, financing, or leasing. Those are the, the, the three things that make the answer a little bit more different.

• 36:52Speaker 00

So if you own it, yes, definitely you're eligible for an additional rebate. You just need to talk to your solar company and then they can give you the invoice and, and, and the bill eventually so you can claim it on your taxes. But if you're leasing that you don't take advantage of that.

• 37:08Speaker 02

They give you up to like a thirty thousand dollar, um, tax credit like that you could carry forward.

• 37:16Speaker 00

Correct. So I, I think it's a little bit more of whatever the, the expense that you have on your solar.

• 37:20Speaker 02

Yeah, up to thirty thousand max.

• 37:22Speaker 00

That's what you can, what you can write off.

• 37:24Speaker 02

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 37:25Speaker 00

Yeah, good questions. Yes, definitely a tough subject to talk about, especially during the, uh, uh, summer months. Another one that's an expense, especially during the summer months for parents is Fourth of July is coming.

• 37:37Speaker 02

  Oh, man.

• 37:37Speaker 00

And I know it's never too soon to talk about the extra expenses during that day. So I want to just dive in into fireworks. What do you think the average American household pays for just fireworks?

• 37:51Speaker 02

It all depends if they're going to Vegas or they, or they go Nevada or they staying local.

• 37:55Speaker 00

No, we're just, we're just talking about our local, you know, uh, fundraising, uh, uh, things that we do for our local schools. I don't know what, what they're called, the, uh, TNT.

• 38:05Speaker 02

  The boosters, yeah.

• 38:06Speaker 00

TNT is one of them. So what do you think the average is?

• 38:10Speaker 02

Like one sixty or eighty, eighty, eighty to one sixty, I believe.

• 38:15Speaker 01

  I would say that.

• 38:16Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 38:17Speaker 01

  I mean.

• 38:17Speaker 00

  You too, Stephen?

• 38:18Speaker 01

I mean, my neighborhood, it's year round, so.

• 38:20Speaker 00

Well, that's what prompted me to talk about this because yesterday fireworks started in my neighborhood and you, they were not small ones. Just I'm talking about the ones that go up in the air and just, just.

• 38:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:30Speaker 00

  A show.

• 38:30Speaker 02

  Illegal ones.

• 38:31Speaker 00

Those are the illegal ones, I think.

• 38:32Speaker 02

There are the legal ones, yeah.

• 38:33Speaker 00

Because they were pretty noisy and sound was, was, was, was big. So on average, American households spend about a hundred dollars per household just for fireworks. Now for a Fourth of July event, like the whole, the cookout, if you have one and all that's about three hundred bucks.

• 38:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:50Speaker 00

Talking about food and, and what have you for an average about seven dollars per person in the country. Now in billions, Latroy, how much did we spend?

• 38:59Speaker 02

  In billions?

• 39:00Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm. On just fireworks?

• 39:03Speaker 02

  Hey.

• 39:04Speaker 00

Two point seven billion dollars in twenty twenty three.

• 39:07Speaker 02

  Two point seven? Hey.

• 39:08Speaker 00

That's almost as your beautiful bill for the NCA at two point eight. Right, Steven? Almost.

• 39:15Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, that's out of control.

• 39:16Speaker 00

It's, it's, I spent about a hundred dollars and I only have one son. So I'm just gonna feel for you, man.

• 39:21Speaker 02

Yeah, we, I mean, but the US, we, we're the only ones to celebrate.

• 39:26Speaker 00

  What do you mean?

• 39:27Speaker 02

  Fourth of July.

• 39:28Speaker 00

  Like in your neighborhood?

• 39:29Speaker 02

  No, United States.

• 39:30Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah, that's, I mean, our Independence Day and, and we're proud of that and, and I think when you go to countries like France, for instance, their independence or their, call it liberation days, days, July fourteenth.

• 39:44Speaker 02

  July fourteenth.

• 39:45Speaker 00

But they, they don't have what we have here where people are just doing their own thing on the streets, next to their houses and stuff now. It's, it's like a national thing and

• 39:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:53Speaker 00

they have shows, firework shows all throughout. Uh, the best one I've ever been to was in Chicago. It was one of the best. Couple million people on the street, right by the lake.

• 40:05Speaker 02

Are you sure it wasn't guns?

• 40:08Speaker 00

No, it was fireworks. I watched them.

• 40:11Speaker 02

Depending on what side of town you're on in Chicago, you know.

• 40:15Speaker 00

Yeah, so, so, so, so, you know, I, I, I talk about all this in, in a contest that you and I talked about last week, which is budgeting. So you gotta be prepped for all of these things throughout the year. And I encourage people to have a budget for all these things, you know, that, that come up. Christmas, Fourth of July, things like that.

• 40:34Speaker 02

You say, but for Valentine's Day, huh?

• 40:36Speaker 00

Uh, no, that's something I do not. And you're putting me on the spot.

• 40:39Speaker 02

Put you on the spot there.

• 40:40Speaker 00

Hopefully, my wife is not listening to this. No, I do not say for Valentine's Day.

• 40:43Speaker 02

I don't either. I just go to the Garden District, right here.

• 40:47Speaker 00

What's the name? Uh, Trader Joe's has, has, has a good sale on flowers.

• 40:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 40:52Speaker 00

If you get, if you get lost, go, go, go to Trader Joe's. Get some, get a couple of bouquets.

• 40:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:58Speaker 00

You know what I do? I cook.

• 41:01Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 41:01Speaker 00

I cook a very good meal. And you know, I take my time, couple of hours prepping for that. That's what I do for Valentine's.

• 41:09Speaker 02

Yeah, this is good to having, having your budget.

• 41:11Speaker 00

I refuse to go actually out and eat during Valentine's. That's something I never do. I probably will never do.

• 41:17Speaker 02

  Alright.

• 41:18Speaker 01

See, I'm lucky. My wife's birthday is the week before, so we do everything.

• 41:22Speaker 00

  All at once?

• 41:22Speaker 01

All at once. The week before, everybody goes out, so I let her pick whatever. If she wants me to cook, I will get her some tums on the way home. And if, uh, if she wants to go out, it's just her, it's her night or her weekend.

• 41:34Speaker 00

  Good, good for you.

• 41:35Speaker 01

But the more I hear you, you about cooking, man, I, I need to see what you're working with, cause, uh.

• 41:40Speaker 00

Hey, anytime you want, Stephen, you're welcome. You know that. You know that. Yeah.

• 41:46Speaker 01

I, I've seen, I've seen Latroy's reels on when he's barbecuing. He's got a big old barbecue. But I'm like, damn, this guy is cooking it, man.

• 41:55Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah. I, I wanna, I wanna try those ribs too.

• 41:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:59Speaker 01

You, you know what I was talking about?

• 42:01Speaker 02

Hey, uh, who do we got for the game today? We got the finals on tonight.

• 42:05Speaker 01

  OKC, baby.

• 42:06Speaker 02

OKC versus Indiana. Everybody said OKC is gonna be a lopsided match. So who, who you got, who you pulling for, Sammy? OKC or Indiana?

• 42:15Speaker 00

  Indiana.

• 42:16Speaker 02

Okay, underdog. I'm going for, uh, pulling for OKC. They playing Indiana, right, Stephen?

• 42:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:24Speaker 00

  Yeah, yeah.

• 42:25Speaker 02

  Yes, sir.

• 42:27Speaker 00

  No?

• 42:29Speaker 00

  Oh.

• 42:30Speaker 02

Yeah, I want the west, west, west, western conference team.

• 42:32Speaker 00

Nah, that's true. That's true. Maybe OKC then, maybe. I really don't care for neither of them, so.

• 42:37Speaker 02

  Me neither.

• 42:38Speaker 01

And I'll get you your, uh, your Aaron Rodgers jersey for, for Christmas. So don't worry.

• 42:42Speaker 02

He looked pretty good in that uniform today.

• 42:44Speaker 00

Yeah, yeah. Alright, Stephen, take it away, man. I don't wanna talk. I don't wanna talk anymore. I'm done.

• 42:50Speaker 01

I appreciate it, you guys. Tune in tomorrow from two to three. We'll be live with Chris and Seth. We'll have another fine Money Wise show. Until then, be smart, be safe, be money wise.
