• 0:58Speaker 04

  Sammy Abiyawi.

• 0:59Speaker 03

  Sammy, happy Monday.

• 1:00Speaker 04

Happy Monday to you too, Sharad.

• 1:02Speaker 03

It's great being here today. We have a listener message and I think it's a great way to start it out.

• 1:09Speaker 04

Yes, always, always keep them coming. So, are financial advisors and even CPAs using AI? And do you see AI taking over these jobs? I'm sure it will, but we are pretty far from it.

• 1:23Speaker 03

So, this is a great, you know, conversation. I think last week it was Chris and Seth that talked about this, had a heated discussion about AI. It is a fascinating subject for us too, because it feels like, it feels very much like when the internet came out, you know, in the, in the late 90s, where it was, you got this sense of like the world was changing. Finally, there was an innovation that was really changing the world, almost like when our, our great grandparents were around, when cars were invented, you know?

• 1:59Speaker 04

It took very little time to go from horses in New York City to cars.

• 2:03Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:03Speaker 04

And, and the street being flooded with cars, like a year, like very little years. It's not, it was not over a long period of time. And I think- I I I feel like this is what's happening with AI. We're moving a lot faster with this change than anything else.

• 2:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:19Speaker 04

To me than even the internet.

• 2:21Speaker 03

Well, imagine how those people in New York City that were, let's say their career were wagon repair person.

• 2:31Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 2:31Speaker 03

Whatever, or they were horse horseshoe.

• 2:34Speaker 04

  Horseshoe.

• 2:34Speaker 03

  Horseshoeers.

• 2:35Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 2:36Speaker 03

  Whatever you call them.

• 2:37Speaker 04

The blacksmith, the blacksmith does that?

• 2:39Speaker 03

  Yeah, blacksmith, you know, you're.

• 2:40Speaker 04

Oh, look at me teaching you English, Sharon.

• 2:44Speaker 03

Leather workers, saddle makers, you know, like these, these were people right there seeing these cars. And they're going, what, what, what, where's my job, you know, what's going to happen to me? I'm sure a lot of them were skeptical and thinking, oh, well, you know, horses are still better, you know, horse. Horse can do this, can a car do this, you know, and they were, they were talking about that. This, this happened also, you know, a little bit in, in some ways when the internet came out. It was, well, you know, I, I know more than, you know, than AOL or I know more than the internet. And so there was a period of time of kind of resistance or denial. And I, I see a lot of that now with the AI world.

• 3:24Speaker 03

I mean, there's a lot of people that are adopting it and going, oh, wow, this is, you know, if you start using it, then you realize how, how powerful it is. But for those who aren't really, don't use it, or maybe you just, you know, you play with chat GPT every once in a while. You don't really understand it. Then there's going to be a, there's going to be an awakening, I think, at some point where people will realize, oh, this, this, this, this does my job better than I do my job. Think of like graphic designers, even financial advisors. So coming back to our listener question, you know, how, how, how is it impacting our, our job? Do we use it and how, how will it, what parts of our job will it replace? And first of all, we use it.

• 4:08Speaker 03

I think the majority of us in the office use AI or some form of AI regularly. Every day, we have ways of using AI to help us in our in our tasks, in our notes, in our scheduling. We have, we use AI frequently to help in some of our planning. It's certainly a lot more reliable, I've found, than just Googling something. So if there's some sort of complex tax question or financial planning question, it's really great at, you know, solving some of these issues without weeding through a bunch of ads, you know, on Google or whatever.

• 4:48Speaker 04

That's right, especially with the paid, you know, version of ChatGPT.

• 4:52Speaker 03

  Paid version.

• 4:52Speaker 04

Yeah. It's, it's, to me, I found it very reliable. Now, in my position, I'm not a finance, a licensed financial advisor, but here around the office definitely helps. I mean, creating policies, putting processes in place, creating Excel spreadsheets, dumping Excel spreadsheets for analysis for, for, for me as a CFO.

• 5:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:10Speaker 04

It helps a lot. And then it can even bring industry averages and knowledge over to, if you ask it the right questions.

• 5:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:18Speaker 04

So, as a forty-eight-year-old, not very tech savvy, somehow, you know, techie, I use it, and it helps. So I think the future, if we're, somebody like me at my age, if we're not using it, you will definitely be left behind.

• 5:33Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. And, you know, there's some interesting studies that I've read about that are looking at what job losses we're gonna have from this. And the, not all, but there's a good chunk of these studies that show it's actually gonna create more jobs. And it's going to eliminate some, and certainly in certain industries, but because it's creating a new industry, it's gonna be creating new jobs from that. So it'll make us much more efficient and much more, what's the word, just, just better at, at what, you know, humans can do. So the big question, though, is, when do we

• 6:17Speaker 03

reach AGI? This is, this is the, the ultimate goal for

• 6:23Speaker 03

Artificial intelligence, which is general, artificial general intelligence, AGI. That's the, that's the hot topic among these, these creators. And that is to be able to think and, and observe and, and make decisions at the speed and at the reliability that the human brain has. That we're still a ways away. You know, I think even, even some of the more optimistic scientists out there, researchers say, oh, you know, best case scenario, maybe five, 10 years. Others are a little bit more pessimistic and thinking, oh, you know, we're still 20 plus years away because it is the amount of computation that the brain can handle and

• 7:08Speaker 03

how it can multitask. You can't, you know, ChatGPT can't multitask. Now it's getting better and now we have where these, all of these programs like ChatGPT, you can create agents. So you'll hear this, you know, these agentic coding, which is that you're turning the software into an agent. So it's somebody, you can train it to do things for you and follow through on tasks. You can, you can train it to, to make a reservation for you, set up your vacation, make your reservations, buy your plane ticket.

• 7:42Speaker 04

  It's like having a robot.

• 7:43Speaker 03

It's like having a robot that's all just software in the box, you know? But now you bring up robots. So it was before people were saying, well, you know, ChatGPT or these large language models are only going to get so far because they don't have arms and legs. Like they're not gonna, not gonna be able to do this. But guess what? That's coming along really quickly.

• 8:02Speaker 04

  Correct.

• 8:02Speaker 03

  Very quickly.

• 8:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 8:04Speaker 03

And China and the United States is leading the world and creating these robots that are, can do things that humans can do. I mean, you've probably seen some of these videos. It's insane.

• 8:14Speaker 04

I've seen, I've seen robots for almost like the construction industry.

• 8:18Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 8:18Speaker 04

Like, like right now, we can have a robot that.

• 8:24Speaker 04

Prints a house or builds a house in 3D.

• 8:27Speaker 03

  Right.

• 8:27Speaker 04

And it's a lot faster. Takes about a week. In Texas, there is a company that builds a house.

• 8:33Speaker 03

We talked about that company, that Texas company. I can't remember the name of them. We talked, you were, it was on a different show that I was on with Frank, I think.

• 8:39Speaker 04

And, and, and it's amazing. I saw, I saw, I saw some videos over the weekend of this company and how, and, and, and how efficient, how fast. This could be our answer to the housing problem we have throughout the United States.

• 8:51Speaker 03

Yeah, but it's also a threat to those construction workers, right?

• 8:56Speaker 04

  Correct.

• 8:56Speaker 03

And so it's this existential crisis that many people are going to be experiencing where all of a sudden their job is going to be outsourced to a software programmer to a robot. And you, you want to be ahead of that. You want to be, you want to be ahead of that as much as possible, you know? So maybe if you're in construction, for example, you, you, you, you, you start thinking about working for a tech company down the road. So maybe there's some training involved to learn how to use some of these programs.

• 9:22Speaker 04

And that's what a lot of that bill, I don't, I can't remember that the Biden administration had.

• 9:26Speaker 03

  Inflation Reduction Act?

• 9:28Speaker 04

Yes. A huge part of that bill was to help reinvent, reintroduce, retrain a lot of these people on these green and new technologies. That the rest of the world, by the way, has and have.

• 9:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:40Speaker 04

We don't. That's why we need more skilled workers. We need to invest in that. As a country, we need to invest in that.

• 9:47Speaker 03

Yeah. This is also an argument that I, I'll make that one of the most important skills that you can have in, in, in finding and, and maintaining a good job is your ability to critically think.

• 9:59Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 10:00Speaker 03

Because, you know, they're, not everybody is, is great at critical thinking. Maybe they're just really great at, at hammering, you know, hammering nails in, into, into things, which, which is, that's fine, you know, you can find fulfillment in that. But you really want to be, have skills to know how to think outside of your, think outside of your, your own position a little bit more. And project into the future about what you should or shouldn't be doing to.

• 10:27Speaker 04

I, I, I think you're touching on a, to me, a, um, a good subject because in our education system here in America, I don't think we have enough of that.

• 10:37Speaker 03

  No.

• 10:38Speaker 04

So we graduate people from high school that cannot balance their own checkbook.

• 10:42Speaker 03

  Right.

• 10:42Speaker 04

And they cannot make sound financial decisions. As an eighteen year old, the rest of you already should know how to balance a checkbook.

• 10:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:50Speaker 04

How, how, how, how not to spend money.

• 10:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:54Speaker 04

You know, that you don't have.

• 10:55Speaker 03

Yeah, or even know how to learn about how to spend money. Like, you don't, like, a lot of people don't know about how to balance a checkbook, but people could figure it out.

• 11:05Speaker 04

  Correct.

• 11:05Speaker 03

They know how to, they know where to find the information.

• 11:08Speaker 00

Now, is that, is that the problem with the, the schooling? That they're not teaching that?

• 11:14Speaker 03

  I think so.

• 11:15Speaker 04

  I think so.

• 11:16Speaker 03

You know, we, I think we've gotten better, we're moving, you know, farther away from standardized testing, which it's like, that, I, that's what the system failed me on, like, I, I, I was, I'm not a great test taker. And so I grew up going to elementary and middle school and high school thinking I was, I was not intelligent. I, I didn't have, you know, I'm not smart, and so, oh, you know, school's not for me, because I couldn't.

• 11:38Speaker 00

Because it all came down to the CAT test.

• 11:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 11:40Speaker 00

  For, yeah.

• 11:40Speaker 03

Yeah, I was terrible at CAT tests, I was terrible at, at, at, at, at just those CAT tests, like the math, math question stuff that, you know, you gotta do it, and like, instead of learning how I could, you know,

• 11:56Speaker 03

how I could find answers is so much better. And here's the other interesting thing that's happening, and studies are kind of showing this, that there's now almost two generations of people who grew up with only the internet. Meaning, they grew up knowing and knowing nothing more, no, nothing different than the fact that internet is, is, is here. And so, you would think that with those, with that generation, like Alpha, Generation Alpha, that there would be a better, better critical thinking, or at least a bit more skilled in finding out factual answers. And it turns out that they are not. Generation Alpha, that younger generation, so those born after the internet.

• 12:42Speaker 03

Were are actually worse at finding facts and and and and filtering through information and find knowing how to find the truth than our generation, for example, or the boomer generation or or Gen Xers who didn't have the internet till later in life. And my my theory is that it's because we actually kind of grew up, we kind of took on the internet with some skepticism, a certain level of skepticism, you know, you know, we didn't, we we we took, we didn't take for granted back in the day when we'd have to go to the encyclopedia or go to the library, you know, or talk to people to find, find information.

• 13:23Speaker 04

  Find information, yes.

• 13:24Speaker 03

And I think there's now a generation of people that, oh, all the information, it's almost like, well, you know, what truth doesn't, you know, truth really doesn't matter, whatever, you know, it's, it's, it's neither here or there. And I think it's, it's done a disservice for a lot of people.

• 13:40Speaker 04

Yeah, I'm just going back to your critical thinking and the importance of that, not just in in your career, but in anything you do. Like, to me, it's just teaches you common sense.

• 13:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 13:51Speaker 04

Make certain decisions and and having that apply or applying that to our financial world. And I think you're going to talk about this and the stress that could be created sometimes through lack of financial management or not knowing how to manage your finances and the stress that can stem from that and how to cope with it. I think, you know, critical thinking could help our, our, our youth.

• 14:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 14:17Speaker 04

And and you can teach that early, in my opinion. You don't need to wait to high school.

• 14:21Speaker 03

No, no, you want, you don't want to wait till high school. You want to start that really young.

• 14:25Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 14:25Speaker 03

And, you know, to teach, teach our kids and stuff.

• 14:28Speaker 04

There's this meme I see on sometimes where this kid back in the seventies with with the little metal and going into the electrical socket. And the mom's like, no! And the dad's like, no, no, no. Let him be. Then the kid touches it and he gets bam with electricity. And the kid is like, are you gonna do this again?

• 14:49Speaker 03

  That's it. Yeah.

• 14:51Speaker 04

You know, some of that. We need a little bit more of that.

• 14:54Speaker 03

Well, and kind of coming back to our listener question about AI and it taking over jobs. Well, it's not going to take over jobs of people who are able to pivot and they're able to like, think ahead, critically think through your situation, recognize what's coming, accept the facts of what this technology can do, and then finding a job in that area rather than, and we'll talk about this later, but we'll talk about how you deal with financial stresses. It's not, it's not the problem that is the issue. The issue is how you deal with the problem. And that is so true. It's such a life lesson. You know, it's, what was it? Is it Mike Tyson that says everything's great until you get punched in the face?

• 15:33Speaker 04

Exactly. Everybody's a hero until you get your teeth knocked out.

• 15:37Speaker 03

Yeah. And it's not, it's not, you know, it's not about getting knocked down. It's about how you get up. Cause everybody's going to get knocked down and right now humans are getting knocked down by robots.

• 15:46Speaker 04

And I, and I agree with you. The resilience is, I think what you're referring to in my mind. We need to teach that. We need to coach our youth on that.

• 15:56Speaker 03

Well, let's do this. We'll take our first break of the day. When we come back, we're going to be joined by the CEO of the Kern Economic Development Corporation. That's Richard Chapman. Great guest. We're looking forward to it. Stick around.

• 16:05Speaker 00

Don't forget, Money Wise is more than a radio show. We're an independently owned local wealth management firm with 60 plus years of collective experience. Our financial advisors are here to help you, Kern County. Together, let's be smart, be safe, be money wise.

• 16:23Speaker 03

  Here it comes.

• 16:27Speaker 03

  Wait for the smile. Nope.

• 16:30Speaker 03

Welcome back to Money Wise. I'm Sharad here with Sammy. We're your hosts today. We're excited to bring on our guest today is Richard Chapman. He's president and CEO of the Kern Economic Development Corporation. Richard, welcome back.

• 16:42Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 16:43Speaker 03

Is that, is that too deep of a track there?

• 16:45Speaker 05

Uh, that was their Count Three and Play, Prey album was 19, I saw them that year.

• 16:51Speaker 03

  Uh huh.

• 16:52Speaker 05

Eighty-five, but that was the beginning, the end for the band.

• 16:55Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 16:56Speaker 05

That was when they became too famous with Take My Breath Away.

• 16:59Speaker 03

Take My Breath Away, killed them.

• 17:00Speaker 05

So that album, there's a couple gems on it, but nothing like their previous two albums.

• 17:04Speaker 03

Yeah, that, they kinda, they didn't sell out after that, they, or did, did society sell them out?

• 17:11Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 17:12Speaker 03

  Take My Breath Away.

• 17:13Speaker 05

Do you really wanna be in a big arena or like a cool club, right?

• 17:16Speaker 03

Yeah, kind of a cool club.

• 17:18Speaker 05

So there's lessons to be had by growing too quickly, too fast.

• 17:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:23Speaker 05

  To, to fracture bands, right?

• 17:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:27Speaker 00

I mean, do you want a Tacoma or you want a Cybertruck?

• 17:30Speaker 03

  Yeah, I like my Tacoma.

• 17:32Speaker 00

There we go, as we all drive Tacomas.

• 17:35Speaker 03

Hey, Richard, I know you're busy, you're speaking, you give a lot of great public appearances, including you spoke, I wasn't there, but you were, you spoke at a Rotary Club.

• 17:46Speaker 05

  Oh, the West Rotary?

• 17:47Speaker 03

It was the West Rotary, one of our advisors, Chris, is part of that.

• 17:50Speaker 05

  Oh, yes.

• 17:50Speaker 03

  He came back jazzed.

• 17:52Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 17:52Speaker 03

He was like, you guys, Richard Chapman spoke at our Rotary and did you know that our air quality is improved dramatically? And I can't remember the statistic, but he's like, we gotta, we gotta learn these talking points to tell people, cause there's misperceptions still lingering about Bakersfield.

• 18:10Speaker 05

Wow, and we're not, it's a talent attraction, and I would say retention issue because there's various groups out there that are labeling us worst air quality in the country and it, and some of the data is from 10 years ago. Uh, but we're looking at EPA data, you can get daily data, um, actually first couple, even the first couple months of this year, but looking at last year, we, looking at good and, and, uh, good days and moderate days, we had more good and moderate days than Riverside, LA, Phoenix, Visalia, uh, and the days of, and the, and, and looking back a decade, we have, you know, three to five times more, um, uh, good days than, back then. So we need to, the data should be leading this.

• 18:52Speaker 05

Versus the, you know, some misperceptions. So stay tuned for more from us because, um, you know, it's, uh, we are no, we are no longer the worst in terms of these, uh, you know, classifications.

• 19:05Speaker 03

  It's such a great message.

• 19:06Speaker 04

It is. There's a lot of, I mean, I know doctors especially, whenever they're recruiting, there are a lot of the, a lot of the feedback they get is like, well, the air quality, I don't want my kids to be here. I don't have my, I don't want my family to be here. Now I'm hearing that we're better than LA.

• 19:23Speaker 05

Right. And look at the, yeah, again, um, look at the EPA daily, daily factors. And then also frankly, East Kern's a different air district. So they have never really had the air quality, but West Kern has really moved the needle. And if you look at this, you know, uh, Seminole Valley Pollution Control District, the whole valley has dramatically uh, improved uh, uh, on these stats. And so, uh, the information's out there, information's power. And frankly, uh, we're excited about, uh, how we're going to, uh, push that out, not just for local, but folks considering relocating to Kern County, Bakersfield.

• 20:01Speaker 03

Are there, are there other, other than healthcare, we know there's a big shortage for healthcare workers and doctors specifically, but are there other jobs that were, are like employers are struggling to fill?

• 20:12Speaker 05

Right. I mean, it's, uh, you look at the higher level STEM jobs, right? And middle management to upper management. I think those would be the areas, right? And, um, uh, we, we do see, uh, and, and nationwide, it says applicant to jobs ratio, right? It's kind of falling. Um, and you know, a lot of, we're looking at stats, uh, you know, over 40% of people that are eligible to work are not working. So what are the reasons behind that? And, uh, you know, um, with all the talk about onshoring, manufacturing, the like, if we, if those jobs are there, will the, will the employees come?

• 20:49Speaker 03

  Right.

• 20:50Speaker 04

So you said middle, middle and upper management and that across every industry here in the Central Valley?

• 20:57Speaker 05

Yeah, it can be distribution. I mean, it can be a high level like engineering, aerospace. And so again, we have number, we're number four for STEM jobs, but yeah, we're looking at that kind of the middle to higher level. And a lot of times, right, it's a recruitment. And so I think with this air quality data and other data, cost of living, that we're going to, we're, we're getting a lot of traction on attracting talent and, and, and even retaining talent, right? With our career in STEM Expo with High School District, we see these kids that see these opportunities here and the employers are really inspired. And that's why internships are so important to us. So with our foundation promoting internships, paid internships for businesses.

• 21:42Speaker 03

Yeah. So it seems like there is a lot going on right now in Kern County in terms of economic development.

• 21:50Speaker 05

  There is, by the day.

• 21:52Speaker 03

By the day, there's some, there's, every time you come on, it seems like you bring up something that's new.

• 21:57Speaker 05

Cal Dairies has their ribbon cutting later this week.

• 22:00Speaker 03

  Oh, nice.

• 22:01Speaker 05

So down by Gosford and McCutcheon, that's a state of the art bottling facility.

• 22:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:07Speaker 05

Then you have the Pacific Steel groundbreaking a couple of months ago.

• 22:11Speaker 03

  That's also coming up?

• 22:12Speaker 05

Yeah, that happened early this year. Hard Rock will be finished by December. So there's a lot of projects in the pipeline, too.

• 22:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:20Speaker 05

So it'll be very, you know, we have a record number of industrial related projects, which pretty high paying jobs, right? High level, you know, the 60, 70, 80,000 dollar range. So really exciting.

• 22:33Speaker 03

Yeah, it is super exciting. You also have coming up the Kern Economic Summit, Kern County Economic Summit coming up.

• 22:41Speaker 05

  Yes, yes.

• 22:42Speaker 03

It's always a highlight. This is, this year's especially great because it's actually going to be in person.

• 22:47Speaker 05

First in five years since March 11th, 20, remember 2020, that afternoon?

• 22:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:54Speaker 05

  They stayed shut down.

• 22:55Speaker 03

Yeah, and we were all together that morning.

• 22:58Speaker 05

Yeah, I remember that. We, we, you know, it's interesting. We got Hard Rocks coming back. They were at that, this event. I remember we had the Lightning in a Bottle and that, that later in May, the, the festival is returning to Kern County.

• 23:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:16Speaker 05

We even have the world's first, the world's largest water ski tournaments coming in August.

• 23:21Speaker 03

  Oh, really? At the Arvin?

• 23:22Speaker 05

Yeah, we should have them on the show.

• 23:24Speaker 03

Oh, yeah. That is really interesting.

• 23:27Speaker 05

Have you been there? Did you go last year?

• 23:29Speaker 03

  I didn't go last year. I haven't been.

• 23:31Speaker 04

Is it the one in Arvin?

• 23:32Speaker 05

Yeah, the lake's a little south of Arvin.

• 23:34Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 23:35Speaker 05

So it's open to the public. We have 700 competitors and they love that venue. It's, it's just a big hit. And so our goal is to just promote these, these amazing activities. They're making worldwide news that taking place in Kern County.

• 23:49Speaker 03

Yeah, it's really, I love these big events that bring in people from out of town because that's where the money.

• 23:54Speaker 05

  New money.

• 23:55Speaker 03

Big time new money is like, it's way more powerful than.

• 23:59Speaker 05

Lightning in a Bottle, we did the X survey, about 97 and 98% of people coming from out of county.

• 24:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:05Speaker 05

Spending money, 15 to 20 million dollars a couple of days and then going home and talking about how awesome the county is.

• 24:11Speaker 03

  Oh, it's so great.

• 24:12Speaker 04

  It's great.

• 24:12Speaker 05

Hard Rock too will probably, I imagine, be at least 90% from, from out of county.

• 24:18Speaker 03

We get a lot coming for the CIF State Wrestling Tournament that's every year and that, you know, that.

• 24:25Speaker 05

Well, you know, the population of the center of the state is, population of the center of the state is in Shafter, in a field.

• 24:30Speaker 03

  Oh, really? The geographical locations?

• 24:33Speaker 05

Yeah, there's an equal number of people north and south of that point.

• 24:36Speaker 03

Oh, that's cool. It's in Shafter, huh?

• 24:38Speaker 05

It moves every year, a couple, you know, half a mile here, half a mile there, but it is in Shafter.

• 24:43Speaker 03

Because it's based off of population?

• 24:44Speaker 05

  Yeah, north and south.

• 24:46Speaker 03

  Oh, that's interesting.

• 24:47Speaker 04

  Yep, it is.

• 24:48Speaker 03

Is there an actual like monument or something?

• 24:50Speaker 05

  I believe, yes.

• 24:51Speaker 03

  That's cool.

• 24:53Speaker 05

We can arrange a tour. Our board meeting was in Shafter at Wonderful, at the Wonderful Campus last week, you know, 10 to 15,000 people working up there.

• 25:01Speaker 03

Yeah, Wonderful's gotten involved here recently with, I can't remember the other group, but they're, they're starting the.

• 25:09Speaker 03

Um, program up at B C.

• 25:11Speaker 05

  Oh, right. Yes.

• 25:13Speaker 03

Uh, training for like, uh, you know, automated.

• 25:15Speaker 05

Yeah, the Walmart distribution site, uh, that was the first, uh, uh, cold storage of facility like that in the country. And, you know, down at Tohone, you have the Nestle cold storage. I mean, basically fully or, um, in some cases, almost all automated. That's, you know, in the old days, you, you, you'd have employees put the, uh, boxes on the conveyor belt. Now they're programming, right? The machinery.

• 25:39Speaker 03

  Right.

• 25:40Speaker 05

So it's like a very, you know, and we have the robot that installs solar panels in West and East Kern.

• 25:46Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 25:46Speaker 05

If you've seen that one, so.

• 25:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 25:48Speaker 05

  Yeah, the, the.

• 25:48Speaker 04

On, on house, on the roof?

• 25:50Speaker 05

No, it's, uh, it's, uh, utility scale. I mean, we have some projects with two million panels. So the thing about lifting a hundred and fifty, uh, pound panel, uh, the work-related injuries versus having a computer that both lifts it and bolts it in and creates more jobs than, uh, if you did it manually.

• 26:08Speaker 03

Our last segment, we were just talking about from a listener question asking about A I taking over our jobs or in C P A's jobs and financial advisors' jobs. So kind of led us into discussion about, you know, where, where A I is going in terms of job creation or net job gains or losses.

• 26:25Speaker 05

Well, I mean, we're seeing job gain. I mean, again, if you had A E S has this robot, it's A I and a solar powered, A I enable. And you have one, five jobs versus four if you did not have the robot at that actual, uh, site.

• 26:39Speaker 03

That's, that's what I was, I mentioned is that studies are actually showing, yeah, it's a net positive, but there are going to be some jobs that will be lost. Meaning it doesn't take as many people to do certain things, but it, there's also jobs that will be created.

• 26:55Speaker 05

Right, there's upskilling. Yeah, there's upskilling and we're seeing that happening. Obviously, I mean, look at logistics, that the automated component, um, and manufacturing alike too. So there's always this fear, but every time, every decade or two with, uh, with technology is a Moore's law or whatever, but we're still, yeah, I mean, I know coding is, there's under threat of coders.

• 27:17Speaker 03

  Right.

• 27:17Speaker 05

With A I, um, Google and others are not. Hiring as many coders as before. So it, but again, you know, our internship program, the most powerful at C tech and demand was digital media and marketing designed, media design and marketing. So there's also that creative. Yes, AI does up to a point.

• 27:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:37Speaker 05

But, you know, it, that's the key is continue to push the importance of STEM curriculum.

• 27:44Speaker 03

Yeah, that's great. We're joined by Richard Chapman, president and CEO of the Kern Economic Development Corporation. We're going to take a quick break. We come back, I want to hear more about the Kern County Economic Summit and why you might want to be there. We're Money Wise, don't go anywhere.

• 27:55Speaker 00

Need to get your financial fix on the go? If so, subscribe to the Money Wise Podcast and catch up on all past shows whenever.

• 28:04Speaker 04

I mean, not for you, Richard.

• 28:07Speaker 05

  Definitely.

• 28:07Speaker 04

  About a thing.

• 28:08Speaker 03

  Definitely not Berlin.

• 28:12Speaker 03

We're joined by Richard Chapman, CEO of Kern Economic Development Corporation. That's Sammy and I'm Sharon.

• 28:19Speaker 04

Yeah, Richard was, was talking about choices of music. Steven, why don't you change?

• 28:25Speaker 05

  I mean, I know he's a Dolphin fan.

• 28:26Speaker 04

Go with reggae like I am.

• 28:28Speaker 05

  We're both cursed Dolphin fans.

• 28:30Speaker 00

Well, I can only take so much Berlin.

• 28:32Speaker 03

Just stay away from the third album. Stick with the first album.

• 28:36Speaker 00

I didn't know they had more than three albums.

• 28:38Speaker 05

I do have, I do have the sign, they sign the cassette cover for this, the third album. I met Terry Nunn at a Tower Records in DC when we saw them.

• 28:49Speaker 00

  Oh, nice.

• 28:50Speaker 04

For any 30 year or less listener, a cassette is something you record on.

• 28:54Speaker 05

Yes, a cassette where you have to fast forward, be kind, rewind.

• 29:01Speaker 03

Those were the days. They're coming back, by the way.

• 29:03Speaker 00

I was gonna say, they're coming back. I see them at the record shops all the time.

• 29:06Speaker 05

Well, people remember the order of songs on a cassette.

• 29:09Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 29:10Speaker 05

I mean, now it doesn't really, next time, maybe Kate Bush, I'm a really big fan of Kate Bush.

• 29:14Speaker 03

  Kate Bush is great.

• 29:15Speaker 05

I mean, there's some class, I know they, Stranger Things made her popular again.

• 29:19Speaker 03

  Oh, did it?

• 29:20Speaker 05

Yeah, so I'm, some of these musicians now experience like 30 years later.

• 29:25Speaker 03

  A resurgence.

• 29:26Speaker 05

Yeah, because a TV show will play, you know, a hip show will play their, their music.

• 29:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:32Speaker 00

That's the conversation I'm having with my son, because we'll go see movies and I'm like, oh, this was a great song. He's like, this one just came out.

• 29:38Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 29:38Speaker 00

  I'm like, no.

• 29:39Speaker 05

Running up that hill. I'm like, that was when I was in college. I remember that.

• 29:43Speaker 03

I love that. I love doing that. I had that conversation with my son. He's like, you know, he's almost 21 and he'd never heard of James Brown. And I was like, oh, my gosh. You've never heard of James Brown? Okay, let me start to just start talking and showing him videos.

• 30:00Speaker 05

Right. Spotify or YouTube now. It's so easy. Before, we didn't have that, you know, ability, right? We had to go to the record store.

• 30:07Speaker 03

  Right.

• 30:08Speaker 04

Or you had to have that, what was it? The Walkman?

• 30:10Speaker 05

  We did. Walkman.

• 30:11Speaker 04

And then, and then it's, you want to save on the battery because you don't want to waste the battery. So you rewind the cassette with your pen.

• 30:18Speaker 03

  What?

• 30:19Speaker 05

  Yeah, my first.

• 30:20Speaker 03

  That's you, cheapskate.

• 30:22Speaker 05

I had a portable typewriter, Brother typewriter that could save 32 pages.

• 30:26Speaker 03

  Oh, really?

• 30:27Speaker 05

That was the maximum storage capacity.

• 30:30Speaker 03

And it had like a little, did it have a little screen?

• 30:32Speaker 05

It printed, yeah, it printed out. I could like, put it in like in the, yeah, so.

• 30:36Speaker 03

  That's a big deal.

• 30:37Speaker 05

Yeah. I miss those. Times were simpler.

• 30:39Speaker 03

Oh, yeah. Well, I don't know. I think I take my laptop over a typewriter, but call me crazy. All right. So Richard Chab, we got the annual economic summit coming up. What are some of the highlights? At first it could be at Cal State.

• 30:54Speaker 05

Yes, and it's their 25th annual. It's a partnership with Kearney DC, obviously CSUB. Really excited to have Dr. Harper, Dr. Vernon Harper, and the Greater Bakersfield Chamber, Janelle Capra. So that our three organizations are partnering like we have for the last 25 years, but we are having it. It started at CSUB. And so we're going to, it is actually in a couple of days. And we have record number sponsors. We're almost very close to being sold out. And we're really excited about having kind of the larger fireside chats because we're, it was very successful. At our energy summit, so we're gonna have an education panel.

• 31:39Speaker 03

  That's nice.

• 31:39Speaker 05

And then a healthcare panel. So we have six leaders from those industries for each. We have the two economists. I believe, I'm sure you've had Dr. Machika on the show or Dr. Gerhardt.

• 31:53Speaker 03

We have Dr. Gerhardt on regularly.

• 31:55Speaker 05

Yep. So they all, they have slots. And then, then we have, like we did five years ago, we have focus on several exciting projects, which are Strato Launch, the world's largest airplane, Bing Building Mojave, Pacific Steel Group. We talked about that earlier, the first steel mill in 50 years.

• 32:14Speaker 04

Is it gonna be bigger than that airplane from Ukraine, the one that got?

• 32:19Speaker 05

  Well, there's, there's debate, right?

• 32:21Speaker 03

  The airplane got bombed.

• 32:22Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 32:23Speaker 05

Yeah, this is 360, wingspan of 360 feet.

• 32:27Speaker 04

  Wow.

• 32:28Speaker 03

  It's massive. That's really cool.

• 32:29Speaker 05

And then we have Hard Rock. We have Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Tahoma. So we have three really cool Kern County projects, manufacturing, aerospace,

• 32:42Speaker 05

resort, kind of destination resort. And so I think, believe it or not, many people are not, may not be aware of one or two or even three of these projects calling Kern County home.

• 32:53Speaker 04

Exciting new projects for Kern County, the jobs, the job creation for these projects. Are we looking for local talents to be, to be hired?

• 33:01Speaker 05

Oh, yeah. They always, number one, look for local, as well as local vendors. So remember that these companies are, wanna hire local, I mean, Hard Rock has had vendor forums as well as Pacific Steel. And, and, you know, Strato Launch, interesting when a hundred companies at Spaceport, when maybe one, like Virgin Galactic in orbit, in terms of shutting down very operations, Strato Launch hired their workers and also absorbed some assets. So this is the thing, right? So our thing is educating the public about, hey, this job's an hour away, really well-paying jobs, because above and beyond, they want to hire local talent.

• 33:43Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 33:44Speaker 05

And so that's the key. is that we make our residents aware of these incredible opportunities.

• 33:49Speaker 03

These are great panels, by the way, that I noticed the education panel, you essentially have all of the presidents from all of the local colleges. The B C's president, Sero Koso College, the chancellor for their Kern Community College District, the president of Cal State Bakersfield and the superintendent president at Taft.

• 34:11Speaker 05

And assistant superintendent K S O S. So we have all layers, levels of education. Obviously, it's, it's great. And then we have Dr. Hedgie, who you know, Aaron, so he'll be moderating that discussion. And so there's a lot of meat on the bone. And again, as I always say, workforce development and economic development go hand in hand.

• 34:32Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 34:32Speaker 05

And so I'm, I'm really looking forward to these conversations as well as healthcare, right? Healthcare is the fastest growing industry and projected to be in, in Kern County. And so that's, you mentioned talent, we, you know, we're growing our own, but also, you know, attracting our own. And the, the services in Kern County in the old days, you have to go over the hill to L A. It's amazing what we have, the high level of that infrastructure for healthcare services in Kern County. So there'll be discussions about the innovation, advancements made in terms, in terms of our local ecosystem.

• 35:09Speaker 04

Yeah, that's awesome. Now I was just gonna reiterate what you just said about having healthcare here. We have a friend who's a hard doctor and he has a patient that was mismanaged at UCLA. And he came here and he got, he serviced him and now he's happy. It's a great, great story to hear.

• 35:29Speaker 05

We need this testimony. So, you know, we're, we're, we're working, finishing up for board approval, our 2025 28 strategic plan. And one of the initiatives, in addition to the public information campaign and air quality improvements is producing videos about why companies chose Kern County as their home. Be it companies growing or coming here. And that, those are the best testimonies.

• 35:50Speaker 03

  Oh, for sure.

• 35:51Speaker 05

Saying their, their experience and then why Kern County really rocks. Right?

• 35:55Speaker 03

Yes, we've heard this. We've had several doctors on this show this past year and it's been really great to hear them talk about why they've chosen to practice medicine here. They say things like, well, you know, there's a community, you actually have a community feel where you you know, people and people, people, you know, know and respect you. And it's you don't get that in LA. You don't get that in some of these these larger markets, but yet we're still a large market. So we're still, there's still a lot of people here.

• 36:25Speaker 05

Yeah, they talked about, I was listening about lifespan abroad, why it's in Europe and other countries. And they talked about leisurely lunches or getting to know people. And I said, you know, the great thing about Kern, we have these amazing lunch experiences. And we talk about family, but business too, but I mostly most a lot of areas around the country. It's very transactional.

• 36:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:45Speaker 05

And so maybe there's, there's like a curve, a two hour lunch at Luigi's at Pyrenees.

• 36:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 36:51Speaker 05

The health, the health benefits, right? But also I tell my staff, you know, learn three things about anybody you work with, customers, clients, colleagues. And so I try to live that too, because I could, we had another show, talk about three things I know about you as well, you know, Jared and

• 37:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:09Speaker 05

  That Dolphins fan over there.

• 37:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:11Speaker 05

  Be Leager Dolphins fan.

• 37:13Speaker 03

You, you have a great background too. We haven't talked much about that, but you know, you, you, you came here from, you were, you've, you've traveled all over the country and you've lived in many parts of the country and the world.

• 37:23Speaker 05

My wife is grew up on basically four continents. I mean, I've lived around the country, so.

• 37:28Speaker 03

Yeah. Yeah. So do you have, but you know, in different parts of the country, you're on the east coast, you're on the west coast and, and you know, you got the experience living in major metropolitan cities.

• 37:38Speaker 05

Yeah, Phoenix, Seattle, DC. So I worked in New York during, in college during summers, grew up in a small town in North Carolina, big golf town. But, you know, they threw me out after they, I, my, you know, they saw my golf game.

• 37:53Speaker 03

And so how does, from your opinion, how does, how does Bakersfield, how is, how does it differentiate? How is it different from those?

• 37:59Speaker 05

  I think it's a mix. I mean, I like, like, I kind of like, I mean,

• 38:06Speaker 05

I'm from the South, but I think people here, in the South, they're nice to their neighbors. I'm generalizing, but here I just see their next door neighbors and like, but here, you know, you can be in the store or at lunch and just strike up a conversation. So, I mean, I like that kind of, you know, we've lost a lot of that. You know, you look at, read, there's a book called Bowling Alone in America where bowling leagues that used to be kind of collegial, those have disappeared. Even think about how many times you entertain a year, you know, in the 60s, 70s, 80s, people used to, you know, have folks over.

• 38:42Speaker 03

  Yeah, they'd just show up.

• 38:43Speaker 05

Cocktail parties, but that's kind of dying around this country. Maybe you meet, you know, another location. So, I love the communal feel, but also we're all, you know, basically amazing ambassadors for Kern County.

• 38:56Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:57Speaker 05

And then the people that have moved here, gosh, it's amazing. Ask them because they fall in love with Bakersfield, Kern County, very quickly, you know, versus the big cities that really everybody's kind of in their own silo or, you know, by their own water cooler.

• 39:15Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. Well, it's great having you. We're so glad that you're here. Thanks for coming on the show. Want to invite in our guest. It sounds like there's still a few tickets left. Do you need a ticket?

• 39:24Speaker 05

A few, literally less than, uh, less than 10 tickets, the last I checked.

• 39:29Speaker 03

Well, there you go. If you want to go, you better grab them quickly. It's coming up this Thursday, May 1st, from 7 to 12 at the Cal State Bakersfield's Gymnasium, the recreation center there on campus. So, definitely want to grab your tickets. If you don't get, go next time and get involved. It's a great way to get involved. You can follow the Kern County Economic Development Corporation. You have a website, social media, and you're still doing this program on Channel 17?

• 39:57Speaker 05

Where business is balanced. We are in our second season.

• 40:00Speaker 03

  Very cool.

• 40:01Speaker 05

So, I, the stories keep coming, I mean, about innovation and ingenuity.

• 40:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 40:07Speaker 05

And again, awareness like you do, make folks aware of the amazing things happening in this region. Just have a five, five minute, you know, two episodes. And I have even a tagline in the show.

• 40:19Speaker 03

  That's great. That's fantastic.

• 40:21Speaker 05

Remember, business is truly boundless in Kern County. I came up with that.

• 40:24Speaker 03

That's good. I like it. It's really good.

• 40:26Speaker 05

  I'll trademark that.

• 40:28Speaker 03

  Yeah, you got it.

• 40:29Speaker 04

I'm gonna remember it, Richard. Thank you.

• 40:31Speaker 03

Yeah, thanks, Richard. Thanks for coming on.

• 40:32Speaker 05

Thank you. Have a wonderful day.

• 40:34Speaker 03

• 41:02Speaker 03

  Welcome back to the show.

• 41:04Speaker 04

This is halal. Nope. So Saudi Arabia came up with it.

• 41:08Speaker 03

I know. That's why I asked. Halal whiskey. I was like, what is that?

• 41:12Speaker 04

Gabe asked me, he was like, hey dad, can I have halal whiskey? I'm like, hey dude, it's halal.

• 41:17Speaker 03

You got your kosher bacon, too.

• 41:24Speaker 03

Welcome back to the show. That's Sammy. That was great, great. Richard, man, what a gem.

• 41:28Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah, he is.

• 41:29Speaker 03

  He's one in a million.

• 41:30Speaker 04

He is. And just the knowledge he brings and all the information about the county, what we're doing, what's going on, the projects. Really amazing.

• 41:37Speaker 03

Yeah. I want to, I want to talk about this, Sammy, since we already, we already mentioned it, is, you know, how, how to deal with financial stress.

• 41:46Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 41:46Speaker 03

It's, it's no surprise, I think, to most people that it's, it's on the top of the list for reasons for somebody to be stressed or depressed or, you know, just overall emotional money is like one of the biggest factors. It's one of the, one of the most contributing factors to divorce.

• 42:07Speaker 04

  Yes.

It, it, you know, it, why you're working and your job and you think about how, how invested you are into your job and maybe some of the stress or pressures that come from that job. Well, guess what? You're doing it for financial reasons, for the most part. You know, you, you've got to make a living and it takes money to, you know, to pay, to pay bills. And so I want to mention to some of the things. That we can do as humans to reduce some of the pressures that can come from stress. There's a really fascinating NPR article where there's interviewing a therapist that specializes in financial stress and consulting.

And what I found was interesting is really it was the advice that's given is really can apply to way beyond just financial stress. Essentially, what studies and what the publications show is that it's not how a person feels about their financial stress or their financial situation that really makes the difference. It's what they think about. And it's really that the perception that they have or the story that they're telling themselves is really where the problem comes into play. Kind of comes off what we were just talking about in the first segment where you're going to get knocked down. It's part of life of getting knocked down.

• 43:31Speaker 03

It's not about that that you should be dwelling on. It's about how do you get up?

• 43:37Speaker 04

  Yeah, the resilience.

• 43:38Speaker 03

  The resilience.

• 43:39Speaker 04

  Yeah. The perseverance.

• 43:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:41Speaker 04

To rebound back. And I agree with you. I mean, look, we live in a society where there's a lot of challenges. Amongst them is the financial challenges. And sometimes you feel like you're in a job that might not lead to what you had planned for yourself. Or sometimes there's a job loss. Sometimes the income that you're generating is not enough because there's unforeseen circumstances that come up. That can create a lot of, a lot of stress. Dealing with that, however, is key because you don't want that stress to keep building up.

• 44:13Speaker 03

Yes, that's right. And you have to, you have to learn how to deal with your financial stresses in a healthy way. So one of the biggest stresses that usually come to somebody financially is them losing their job.

• 44:27Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 44:28Speaker 03

And that is, that is an incredibly difficult scenario to go through. But you have to recognize that you want to give yourself some time to grieve. And you know, obviously be maybe be upset, but ultimately you have to move beyond that. There is, there has to be a time where you are, where you're, you're going towards a healthy place. And we all know people, I'm sure, that have had some life event happen to them, whether it's financial or not, where they become, they become closed off. They maybe stop, you know, their social interactions.

• 45:06Speaker 03

Oftentimes substance abuse can come into play and, you know, essentially unhealthy behaviors because of these events.

• 45:15Speaker 04

Yeah. And, and one thing you say here at Money Wise shared that I'm really, really proud of you as an owner, as a leader within the company. You always say it in meetings and what have you, look, Money Wise is not your life. It happens to be a place you work. It happens to be a place where you get an income from, but it's not your life. Your priority is your family. Your priority is whatever you make your priority to be. So I think that's a great advice for not just business leaders, but also employees. A lot of the times when you start getting into a job, you start making that the focus of your life because you want career growth or you want this or you want that. But then you lose sight of the most important thing, which is family, faith, things that are outside of the work.

• 45:57Speaker 03

Right. It's, it's easy to identify or self identify with your job. And when your job is taken away from you.

• 46:04Speaker 04

  That's correct.

• 46:04Speaker 03

Then all of a sudden you're sort of feel like.

• 46:06Speaker 04

The world is coming down. It's crumbling. It's not. It is not. And I'll tell you something else. You might not get the same high paying job you might, you had or whatever. But we still live in a country where job, where 3.4% unemployment rate. We still have jobs.

• 46:23Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 46:23Speaker 04

You might need to, you know, switch a different career or maybe take on a different role or whatever. But we have jobs available as long as you're willing to work. I think you can rebound back.

• 46:35Speaker 03

Yes, there's, there's very, there's things that you can do when you're, and when you find yourself in a, in a very financially stressful position. Like, you know, using your existing skills to, to, to have side hustles or. Volunteering and even though it may be something that doesn't pay, having these kinds of activities and helping you remind you that you don't, you don't, you can self identify in many ways. You can find meaning outside of maybe your day to day, previous day to day job and don't, you know, wallow in the, in the, for too long, the problem that you find yourself in. Recognize it is temporary. So you can set some very short-term goals that can help you

• 47:18Speaker 03

look, you know, don't worry about what life is going to be like in five years. Focus on three months, six months and so on.

• 47:24Speaker 04

I agree with that. I agree.

• 47:25Speaker 03

Well, we covered a lot here, Sammy.

• 47:26Speaker 04

  That's right.
