• 1:04Speaker 04

  Frank Lee.

• 1:04Speaker 03

Frank Lee, how you doing, man?

• 1:06Speaker 04

I'm doing good. I'm, you know, keeping my head above water and just trying to get enough sleep.

• 1:12Speaker 03

Just barely still new dad. Yeah, I'm like, you keep the new dad at least a year, right?

• 1:17Speaker 04

I want to say for like, maybe 15 years.

• 1:20Speaker 03

Maybe 18 years, depending on the kid.

• 1:22Speaker 04

  Yeah, depending on the kid.

• 1:23Speaker 03

Uh, well, great. Well, why don't we jump right into it? We've got a few messages that I want to start out with, and this first message is a follow-up from yesterday's message. Let's see if I can bring up yesterday's message first. So, this is, this is a good question, and I kind of want to address this because it hits on, hits on a few subjects. So, yesterday, we got a message that said, "Good afternoon, Money Wise Guys. Can someone retire at 62 with $400,000 in a 401K? Have a good day." So, you know, obviously, you probably think like I think, Frank. Well, maybe, right?

• 2:01Speaker 04

  Depends.

• 2:01Speaker 03

I mean, somebody could essentially retire with no money in their 401K. They've got a fat pension.

• 2:08Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:09Speaker 03

Or maybe they've got a pension, or maybe...

• 2:11Speaker 04

  Very frugal, very.

• 2:13Speaker 03

Yeah. So, so we had a follow up from this listener and I kinda wanna talk, talk it through with you. It's perfect to have you, your financial advisor here and get your thoughts on it. So here's the follow up from, from yesterday's message. It says, "I have no real debt and I own my home. Nothing big, just a three bedroom, two bath, $350,000 home, but a little over $400,000 in my 401k. Thank you." And I, this is a follow up from the text that I sent the other day. So, oh, it also goes on to say, "I haven't hit social security age yet. Uh, thank you and I'll look into the 4% rule." So yesterday we talked about, I mentioned the 4% rule because if, if you look at, you know, $400,000,

• 2:56Speaker 03

what that would generate, you know, an income, somewhere around $1,300 a month, I, I believe is what, what we calculated at 4%. Well, okay, you know, maybe somebody could live off $1,300 a month if they're, depending on what other debt. So we got some more information today. So I know I'm just kinda throwing you on the spot here a little bit, but how, how would somebody sit in terms of their retirement in this position? Home paid off, uh, 400 K and they're, in their.

• 3:24Speaker 04

Yeah, and they haven't touched their social security either.

• 3:27Speaker 03

  Right.

• 3:27Speaker 04

Right. Um, I think the last determining factor would be age as well and.

• 3:32Speaker 03

  62.

• 3:33Speaker 04

  62.

• 3:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:34Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 3:34Speaker 03

So a few more years before social security would kick in.

• 3:37Speaker 04

Yeah. Are they still working or?

• 3:39Speaker 03

  I think so. I think they're still working because they're, they have a 401k.

• 3:45Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. So, I mean, if you're, again, depending on when they're wanting to retire, I think it's doable.

• 3:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:54Speaker 04

Depending on what your goals are in retirement. Like I know we talk a lot about what, what are your goals? Pre-retirement, I know it's getting to retirement, accumulating wealth, but then there's some goals post-retirement. What does that look like? Your retirement expense fund, uh, expenses, what does that look like? It seems like to this individual, they're, they're living a pretty frugal life. Um, there's not a lot of overhead expenses. They're able to maintain their lifestyle with what they have. So I think once you reach a certain age, you're wanting to retire and, you know, taking a look at all of your income, not just your 401k, but social security and just doing the math, plugging that in, which now that we have this new tool,

• 4:37Speaker 04

uh, at MoneyWise, you know, we're, we're able to. Really get into the weed of things with the client and plan.

• 4:47Speaker 04

Create a roadmap for these individuals based on, you know, their 401k, social security and any other pension.

• 4:54Speaker 03

Yeah, there's a few assumptions that you have to make to try to plan into the future. Which is why you mentioned software, using technology to help out with that. One of the, one of the cool features of, of sort of coming up with a roadmap for, for retirement. Is that you can run what we call Monte Carlo simulations. So essentially is testing out the, the, the, the different scenarios out over, you know, thousands of times. Into the future, giving you a probability of success. And, you know, it's rare that we see something that's 100%, you know, most of the people. You want to have, you know, 75, 80 plus percent, you know, chances of success.

• 5:39Speaker 03

And it's nice though for me, at least visually to see, okay, how long could the money last? And then, and then to stress test it with either some sort of period of hyperinflation. Or maybe a medical need or, you know, but what it could be, it could be a dozen different things.

• 5:58Speaker 04

Right, like repairs to the house or any other type of expenses. We can even do a simulation to where, do the stress test during the 2001 to 2000. And you go through the whole, you know, financial crisis, the COVID pandemic crisis and all that. See what your Monte Carlo simulation looks like.

• 6:18Speaker 03

Yeah, I think that's important because sometimes people are thinking, well, I don't want to retire. Because, you know, markets are near all time highs and what if the market crashes? And I think it's a fair question, but you, boy, I hate to see somebody delay retirement unnecessarily. You want to be invested, this is one of the issues with target date retirement funds. I think generally speaking, they, they're very good, mostly good. But there is a major flaw in that it is assuming.

• 6:52Speaker 03

That you are, you're going to reach that retirement age, whatever the target date is. It's assuming that that's when you're going to start taking income from it. And, and you, everybody is so different on like, what, what risk tolerance they should be at. Basically, what's their, what should they be, what their strategy should be as they get close to retirement? Because take our listeners' example, it may be that he doesn't need to touch his 401K for a while. His social security might be more than enough to cover, or what, he may have a pension, more than enough to cover it. So, he may be too conservative. And even though you're retired, if you don't need the income, maybe you shouldn't be so conservative.

• 7:36Speaker 03

You know, and there's a lot of different factors, and really simplifying it. But it comes down to, I think, what you said, goals. Everybody has a different goal in mind, and a target date retirement fund is just like, it's the thinking of one goal.

• 7:50Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah, I mean, to touch on that, we, I could set a target date fund for myself, thinking that I'm going to retire at 60, or, for example. But let's say I love what I do, you know, I don't want to retire. So then, am I going to be in that conservative portfolio for the next 10 years or so? Or, you know, it doesn't, it doesn't really make sense.

• 8:10Speaker 03

  Right.

• 8:11Speaker 04

So, there's a lot of determining factors, but, you know, talking to an advisor, just getting that opinion to see where you are, and, you know, have a, have a roadmap set up.

• 8:21Speaker 03

Yeah, good stuff, thanks Frank. Another message here, and this came in, I think, earlier today, says, "Speaking of Elon," so we must have been talking about Elon yesterday. "The world was flipping out this morning because of his email asking for a review of what they've done, or goals are moving, their goals moving forward. Love the Money Wise Show, and as a successful business, do you guys do reviews for employees? I'm a business owner, and we have always done yearly reviews. I'm not sure what the big deal is, maybe it's something I missed." This is kind of interesting, right? Because I don't know, you know, we're not, we're not into the politics here, and certainly...

• 9:02Speaker 03

There's just seems to be, this just reeks of politics. And the government, I'm guessing, again, we're not experts here, but I'm guessing even, even the government departments would have some sort of review process. And it certainly makes business sense to have employee reviews and to sort of, you know, have a check-in with your employee. If an employee is upset about that, yeah, I think there's an issue. It just seems to be a known thing. I've never known of any job at any level where there wasn't some sort of evaluation, you know?

• 9:40Speaker 04

Yeah. Cause then how are you going to keep track of your KPIs, your goals? These are, these are like business lingo's to make sure that we're on track to hitting the next milestone, the next, the next objective and making sure that the company is growing or keeping profit margins.

• 9:58Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:59Speaker 04

  So.

• 9:59Speaker 03

And that the employees are meeting certain standards.

• 10:02Speaker 04

  Right.

• 10:02Speaker 03

And that there's, you know, an understanding of, you know, what, what they're doing. It benefits the employees much as the employer because you, you know, you want to know, most employees want to know if they're doing a good job. And, you know, if you're only getting an evaluation once a year, I mean, you should be getting more feedback than then, but there's a, you know, formal evaluation once a year is pretty standard. And every, every business owner that I know has some sort of evaluation that they do for their employees.

• 10:35Speaker 04

I, I think, I think that's just good practice to, especially for a business owner in a sense, because you want to know how you've progressed. You want to know where you've started, where you are now, if you've hit those milestones or if there's any, any to seek any improvements, you know? I think it's, it's very important to have those types of reviews.

• 10:56Speaker 03

Yeah, for sure. So, good luck with that, business owner. Keep up the good work there. Last message here that I'm gonna read before we take our break. It says, "Saw the news, saw on the news last night that they are testing a flying car. Figured y'all would like that if you haven't seen it yet." And then there's a link. This is apparently all over the internet now. I want to thank our listener for this because for years, at Gero, especially, Gero Ellis, has been the biggest cheerleader for a flying car.

• 11:25Speaker 04

  Really?

• 11:26Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, going back 15 years ago, he would, he would share these types of articles with us. "Hey, check this out. This company's working on a flying car. This is exciting. It's right around the corner." And then, you know, that it never is. So, it's like the ongoing joke that there's gonna be a flying car. So, if you haven't seen it, there's a US-based company. It's a Lef Aeronautics. I believe they're based up in the Bay Area. Yesterday unveiled a video. It's about a 30-second-long video, and it's, I'm a little skeptical. The articles I read said there were a lot of restrictions on the media, what they could film, how far away they could be, you know, what they could do. And do you see the video?

• 12:10Speaker 04

I did, yeah. It's the Jetsons. It really is.

• 12:13Speaker 03

  Totally looks like it.

• 12:14Speaker 04

  The car just looks funky.

• 12:16Speaker 03

Super funky. Usually what you get are, what do they call it, like, graphic, computer-generated images.

• 12:24Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 12:25Speaker 03

It's not like a real video, like a real car. But this is like, it kinda looks like a real car. It has a driving range of 200 miles. First of all, it's not in production. They're taking orders. But it is not in production yet. But, so this is clearly a demo.

• 12:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 12:44Speaker 03

It's, the Model A offers a flying range of 110 miles, and it's priced at around $300,000. So, it only asks for a $150 deposit, by the way, if you want, if you want to get on the pre-order, Frank.

• 12:59Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I'll just look after that.

• 13:01Speaker 03

You mentioned the Jetsons, so I did a little research because I keep hearing about the These different flying cars. I remember seeing this one, at least a computer generated model of this one. The other one that is out there, that's a little bit more, I think, a little bit more advanced. And I don't know if you'd call it a flying car, because it's more of a, like a drone, like a drone for adults. A human drone, but it's Jetson One. It's actually called the Jetson One. It's a personal electrical vehicle takeoff and landing, or EV toll. This is an aircraft produced by the company Jetson. It's a single-seat ultralight vehicle, and it's priced a little bit more fairly at about $98,000, or $100,000.

• 13:43Speaker 03

And it does not require a pilot's license in the United States. And they are available for order with deliveries expected to commence soon. But I've been seeing this soon for a few years.

• 13:58Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 13:59Speaker 03

And, you know, it seems like we're getting really close. I know that there are demos for flying taxis.

• 14:06Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 14:06Speaker 03

There were supposed to be flying taxis, I believe, at the Olympics in Paris. And I think something happened, and it didn't quite pan out like they were expecting, but...

• 14:17Speaker 04

Yeah, I'm curious to see how this all pans out, because, like, for this one, Jetson One, it's not, you don't have to have a pilot's license. So how are they gonna fall in line with highway patrol regulations, or like, safety regulations? And for companies that are wanting to do those taxi drone air services, it's like, there's gonna be a lot of obstacles for them to face to get this approved and passed. So I feel like around the corner is, it's not around the corner, it's definitely, there's gonna be some time till we see anything really in production. Especially with these flying cars.

• 15:00Speaker 04

But it'd be interesting to see how they implement this in the infrastructure of highways, roads, because there's a lot of safety issues or concerns.

• 15:11Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, no kidding.

• 15:13Speaker 04

Yeah, one night you're just gonna hear, you know, a flying car like, vzzzz, right over your house.

• 15:18Speaker 03

  Or over your car.

• 15:20Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 15:20Speaker 03

  In traffic, you know.

• 15:22Speaker 04

Yeah. So what happens when you're, like, low on battery? Some people, some people will just...

• 15:27Speaker 03

  You hear, Marty!

• 15:30Speaker 03

Morty. Oh, man, let's bring the flying cars. It's about time, but yeah, I could wait. I could wait. I definitely don't want Model 1.

• 15:40Speaker 04

No, no, no. I don't want to be an early adopter.

• 15:43Speaker 03

Just like with the, with the, the space, you know, the space tourism, like I'll give this a few years, you know, to let it, let it work itself out before I get strapped into one of those rockets.

• 15:53Speaker 04

  That's true.

• 15:53Speaker 03

  Even they're actually doing it.

• 15:55Speaker 04

There was, there was another one in China, Xpeng, the, the EV company. They have a.

• 16:01Speaker 03

  What's it called? X what?

• 16:02Speaker 04

  Xpeng.

• 16:03Speaker 03

  Xpeng.

• 16:04Speaker 04

Like X P N G. But they have a Sprinter van looking car that has a drone like aircraft attached to it. And it just folds out and then you can get in it and then fly off.

• 16:20Speaker 03

Oh, I'm looking at pictures right now. Wow. That is wild.

• 16:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 16:26Speaker 03

It looks like it's a 2 million yuan or 280,000. So again, about $300,000. They're scheduled for 2026, next year, the modular flying car that you mentioned, Xpeng. Gosh, I mean, I guess if anybody could do it, China could do it.

• 16:42Speaker 00

I'm over here stuck on that Jetson page. That looks awesome, too.

• 16:46Speaker 03

Yeah, you're getting ready to put, are they getting deposits?

• 16:48Speaker 04

  Those, those look fun.

• 16:49Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 16:50Speaker 04

  You know?

• 16:50Speaker 03

Yeah, that looks a little safer than the, the, um, the first car, the Model A. That one looks just, I don't know, something really sketchy about it. I mean, it can go 200 miles, though, on the road like a real car. Let's bring it, let's bring it on. All right, we're gonna take our first break of the day. We're Money Wise, we'll be right back.

• 17:10Speaker 00

Don't forget, Money Wise is more than a radio show. We're an independently owned, local wealth management firm with 60 plus years of collective experience. Our financial advisors are here to help you, Kern County. Together, let's be smart, be safe, be money wise.

• 17:30Speaker 03

Welcome back, we're Money Wise. So excited to have our guest today. Jovon Dangerfield is a man that enjoys wearing many different hats. From community activist, he's also a city leader in music. This music you're hearing right now, that's Jovon Dangerfield. Art initiatives and much, much more. He's also a locally renowned media personality with a home at Forge 103.9. Where he has his own show. Jovan, welcome to the show.

• 18:01Speaker 05

What's up, man? What's up? It's good to be here.

• 18:03Speaker 03

It's so good having you on the show. Full disclosure, you and I have met outside of work for a few different things. And also, I've known you through your nonprofit, TYM for Change.

• 18:20Speaker 05

  Yeah, Time for Change.

• 18:20Speaker 03

So you've got a lot going on.

• 18:25Speaker 03

Why so many hats? That's like my number one complaint. I hate wearing different hats.

• 18:31Speaker 05

You know, I found out a long time ago that I was a multifaceted person. You can attribute it to my particular favor, or my ADHD, or whatever you want to attribute it to. In the best way where, you know, I have all these different ways I want to express how to connect with people. Whether that's through business, whether that's through music, whether that's through traditional art, whether that's through communication, that's all it is.

• 18:55Speaker 03

So where does this come from?

• 18:58Speaker 03

  What's your background?

• 18:58Speaker 05

It comes from me, man. I've had these experiences in music, in life. Obviously, I was a substance abuse counselor for a while. I was an operations manager at the same time, kind of doing both worlds. I was traveling on the weekends doing music. We were starting kids' clothing stores and giving them away for free. And I'm just on a mission and I want to create a multifaceted arm of things that has, you know, one principal spot and connects to other spots and branches out. And I think that's just a part of my call, bro.

• 19:27Speaker 03

It's like a kingdom that you have. So Kingdom Activist is another sort of branch. I don't even know where to start because you have so much going on, let alone just the music. I'm a fan of your music. You've got five or six albums. One just was released not too long ago.

• 19:43Speaker 05

Yeah, yeah, one was just released in January called Inspire, man. And that one's been doing really good.

• 19:48Speaker 03

It's very, very good. It's a very good album. So again, you got all these things going on. How do you?

• 19:58Speaker 03

  How do you manage it?

• 20:00Speaker 05

You know, you gotta be organized. You need a good team. I have a great team. Bree's in the house. She's my assistant and she's also just a muse for me creatively. We bounce up off each other. We go crazy. We wall out. I got, I got Crystal. I got Desi. I got partners in the community helping me. You know, backers that believe in what we're doing and just, it's just been a blessing to have, you know, this, this infrastructure being built where people support me, man. And that's really where it's at. I can do this stuff because I have good people behind me that do things better than I do.

• 20:30Speaker 03

So is your, is your prime, where do you spend most of your prime, your time with TNY for Change?

• 20:36Speaker 05

I spend most of my time, half time with Time for Change and the other half with Kingdom Activist. My particular company is Outreach Support and Services, but I'm the brand of it. So it's easy to kinda do that and even intertwine that with what we do because our missions are so similar. And then I'm with Fire 1039, building that brand and doing the shows as well.

• 20:54Speaker 03

Yeah. Okay. So what, Time for Change then, what is that?

• 20:57Speaker 05

Time for Change is a youth action, learning and research company, man. And we basically, we, we, we, we help mentor youth. We bring them into action by teaching them about concepts. We recently adopted Martin Luther King Park. We've been studying the park over there for a while. We got information on that park. We made a documentary about all of the work we did. We dropped it at the Maya and Amazon and we went to city council and we advocated for Sharps containers to be put in local parks due to anecdotal research and data we picked up on our scans. And I'm sure enough, man, the city council overwhelmingly voted it in and we were able to get our Sharps in the park. And we've been able to just capitalize on that.

• 21:31Speaker 03

  You said Sharp?

• 21:32Speaker 05

Yeah, Sharp containers, like needles. Yeah, we're finding needles by kids play equipment. Needles where kids would play, bro. They could get like a bloodborne pathogen trying to get on the swings, man. So we were like, now what do you guys want to do about it? And the team, we went together. It was such a, one of the best moments of my life with this team.

• 21:50Speaker 03

Going to the city council, representing.

• 21:52Speaker 05

Going to the city council, building this documentary in the back end, knowing we're about to tell this story in a way that was not divisive, even though there were some touchy subjects. We were able to do it in a way that promoted unity and, and that's Time for Change's spot in the world. Like we're, we're drawing all sides to us. Republicans, Democrats, liberals, conservatives, like wherever you're at, come talk with us, bro. And let's learn about each other and let's, let's build, you know what I'm saying?

• 22:16Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm, I'm excited for what's coming for Martin Luther King Park. I'm sure you've seen the renderings or what the plans are.

• 22:22Speaker 05

We've been a part of it, yes.

• 22:23Speaker 03

  Good, good.

• 22:24Speaker 05

We've been able to be a part of it. Time for Change is being involved with advocating for getting the money. And also I'm a part of the planning from each stage, working with the city.

• 22:31Speaker 03

So you, you work primarily with youths age?

• 22:34Speaker 05

  Sixteen to twenty-four.

• 22:35Speaker 03

Sixteen to twenty-four. And what, what a great organization, right? You, you, what do you have coming up?

• 22:42Speaker 05

Man, we're in the community. We created an assembly curated with the album Inspire, along with a handcrafted assembly called Inspire. And it's built by us for youth.

• 22:53Speaker 03

  You said a ha- assembly?

• 22:55Speaker 05

Yeah, we, we created an entire assembly from scratch.

• 22:58Speaker 03

  What is, what's an assembly?

• 22:59Speaker 05

Assembly, like a school assembly, like when schools come in.

• 23:02Speaker 03

Oh, oh, I see. Oh, so you go to schools and like present?

• 23:04Speaker 05

Oh, yeah, dude, we're at South, we're at North, we're gonna be at East, we're gonna be at Miramonte, we're gonna be at Washington, we're, we're like taking a tour right now.

• 23:12Speaker 03

And so you showed the documentary, do you, do you sing and dance? What do you do?

• 23:15Speaker 05

Well, I mean, we, we started out with media, there's, there's like inflections of music and happening. And, and then there's like an intro where we use AI and it talks to them and it introduces me with like fifty celebrities going crazy, bringing it back to the town, getting them pumped up. Then I come out and we give out stuff, then Bree comes and we do a cahoot. She runs around and we tell jokes and then at the end of the time I do a keynote, something creative about where I've been and where I'm going and, and, and just encouraging them, man. And they walk out of there feeling good about themselves. Sometimes we hold focus group on school campuses. Time for Change is getting busy right now, man. We're about to start offering services. We're trying to partner up with Kern Family and partner up with Anthem and been talking to Mike Bowers. And we're just pushing, like we're about to take land, like no matter what.

• 23:59Speaker 03

  That's great.

• 24:00Speaker 05

  It's on.

• 24:00Speaker 03

I, I, now that you say assembly, I have so many fond memories of going to school and then hearing that there's gonna be an assembly and being so happy that we don't have to be in class.

• 24:09Speaker 05

But we just had to bring it to the future because they had some guy talking for forty-five minutes. And now it's like we have created something that uses media, music, they're Cultural references, cash, incentives, conversation, focus groups, and then it gives it something powerful, but it's current and youth just vibe with it.

• 24:27Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. So, so, you know, the, the, the time for change, you know, being out there and in the community, where, where do you see change needing to happen? What needs to change? Aren't we just all fine?

• 24:40Speaker 05

Well, you know, I, I think there's cultural change at the, at the, at the top, right? There's, there's how I feel about people. That's the very, that's the number one thing. All, all of the stuff we can get into, we can be Malcolm X and Marcus Garvey and Martin Luther King all we want. But if your heart isn't right and you don't love people and you're not ready to listen to what they have to say, you're, you're going to be ineffective. You're not going to be as powerful and as influential in the space of making change as you need to be. So first and foremost, at Time for Change, we work on a lot of ourself. We talk openly. Uh, we give a lot of feedback. We, we talk to the youth. We gather feedback. How are people feeling? We talk about working our way through the emotions associated with being triggered online and, and different things that are going on, how you feel about DEI and immigration.

• 25:23Speaker 05

But talking about it in a way that doesn't reflect personal bias as much as it does just trying to get to the root of what's really happening. What's the problem? And how can I be a part of the solution? And what's the path of least resistance? Because if there is one, we want to take it in conversations and not just be saying, you know, oh, well, they want to do this and they want to do that. No, like, what, what's the stats on this? What's the numbers on this? Who was this affecting? And let's come together. That's what Time for Change is about. Research, learning, and building youth to be rational thinkers and not teaching them what to think, but teaching them how to think. And they can go out and make change everywhere they go.

• 25:57Speaker 03

We're joined by Joe Von Dangerfield. He is a local activist, community member, and artist. Um, talk about Kingdom Activist then, this or, or what other?

• 26:08Speaker 05

Yeah, so Kingdom Activist is the Incorporated was the first company I started in 2019. And basically it's outreach, support, and services, but creative. So everything I do, when I show up to MC, when I go out to speak, I've traveled the country maybe like three or four times, speaking and doing music at the same time. So pushing the narrative, going into prisons, going into schools, doing festivals, um, also making- Music and releasing music to be the soundtrack to the movement and giving giving people updates on where I'm at mentally and emotionally as I'm taking this journey and and really thinking on a more gradual scale, right about what happens here in Bakersfield, understanding that social media made it possible for people to raise profiles and be what Jay-Z is to the

• 26:49Speaker 05

country in regions and you start out in your school, your community, your city, your region, your state, your country, right? And navigating to each place as you build the skills necessary to do the next thing. And that's what Kingdom Max is really all about.

• 27:02Speaker 03

Yeah, man, again, you got so much going on. That's Joe Von Dangerfield. We're gonna take a quick break. We come back, I want to talk about your music.

• 27:08Speaker 05

  Yeah, let's do it.

• 27:09Speaker 03

You know, I knew your music before I knew you. And so it's still kind of weird to like to see you in person because you have so much great stuff. So I want to hear more about your musical journey. I'm Sharad and that's Frank. We're Money Wise. We'll be right back.

• 27:23Speaker 00

Need to get your financial fix on the go? If so, subscribe to the Money Wise Podcast and catch up on all past shows.

• 27:38Speaker 03

Welcome back. We're Money Wise. That music you hear right there is Joe Von Dangerfield. He's our guest right now. Joe Von Dangerfield. Again, a big fan. This is so good. I shared this morning some of your music with Steven and he was like, he's queuing up already. What's gonna go on? You got you got some hits. Seriously, good stuff. So we're just now talking during the break about your your music career. And I think if I said career music career, you probably would say, no, I don't want to. I'm not a rapper. I don't want to be a rapper.

• 28:10Speaker 05

  That's cool.

• 28:11Speaker 03

So talk about it. Talk about where you where you sit with music.

• 28:14Speaker 05

Like, you know, we were just talking, having an in-depth one even right now, right? But basically, when I look at music and what it was supposed to be for me, it's supposed to be promotional content. It was supposed to be, I knew in the new era, there was going to need to be cultural things that move the needle that connect you right back to what you're really trying to do. And and it's like, for instance, when you go into schools and you speak and you're Guy, they're gonna look at you way different than if you're a guy that has been in Hollywood, moving around, making music, putting stuff out on Apple, Spotify, creating music videos. It's like it enhances what I'm already doing and I already love to do it. So that's the way that it's helped produce capital is by being the promotional thing that draws people to me.

• 28:59Speaker 05

And this is another arena through which I get booked, we bring time for change out. They have all kind of, all the things I do kind of have tapped each other in the ring.

• 29:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 29:09Speaker 05

And gotten me more ga- more ground here. At some point in time, you know, you'll have to clearly identify your, the stuff you want to do primarily. But if it's building and it's working and it's growing, sometimes it's best not to touch it.

• 29:22Speaker 03

So if Capitol Records calls and if the check's big enough.

• 29:26Speaker 05

I have, I have been talking to a couple of labels, actually shout out to Mark who's been working for me. He's out in San Luis Obispo and he's been talking to labels. I'm gonna, and talks to do Lakers halftime, I'm in talks to do Clippers halftime, I'm in talks to, I almost secretly between us, I almost had Make It the song play during the Super Bowl in the stadium. And then nobody knows that because it didn't, it didn't go through, but we were in talks, shout out to Mark from She Mogul Media. Um, and so he's working these albums for me. So my thing is I'm just gonna come in and do music on my terms. I already know how the industry works. I already been in, I'm already in radio, I'm already moving around in LA. So I know how music works. You guys ain't gonna, mm-mm. It's gonna be on my terms.

• 30:07Speaker 03

Yeah. So that's, that's what's really kind of interesting is you're just, you're essentially, you don't want to, your, your primary focus is, is these other things that you're doing.

• 30:18Speaker 05

  Reaching people.

• 30:19Speaker 03

Time for Change, Kingdom Act, your nonprofit.

• 30:21Speaker 05

  Yep.

• 30:22Speaker 03

And the music is just sort of a thing that just supplements it.

• 30:26Speaker 05

Exactly. It reaches people. So as lo- as long as it reaches people, then I can do it because it's in alignment with my true identity. I'm not just chasing the wind and doing anything. It has to be close to who I am or else it doesn't work.

• 30:37Speaker 03

So how do you do it so well? How do you do the music so well? Do you, do you work with certain producers or is this all just you?

• 30:44Speaker 05

I've been doing music for a long time, you know, I was playing keys, I was traveling. How did you learn?

• 30:49Speaker 03

  Where'd you learn?

• 30:50Speaker 05

  I learned in church, man.

• 30:52Speaker 03

That is, I cannot believe how, I don't, in fact, I don't know that I've met a musician in town that didn't learn or cut their teeth at church.

• 31:00Speaker 05

Yeah, by, by, by ear, you know, the song come on and they're like, play this, you know, and if you can't, you get kicked off in front of everybody and you got trauma. I still got trauma.

• 31:10Speaker 03

  From church?

• 31:10Speaker 05

Yeah, man, some lady's about to sing a solo, you don't know what it is. You don't know what the song is, you better hope you know it, and she sings it, and you better play that thing right with her or else you're about to get called out.

• 31:19Speaker 03

You're just guessing on the key?

• 31:20Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 31:21Speaker 03

  You're just going for it?

• 31:21Speaker 05

You start listening, you start learning how to, like, what key is she in, and you start playing, and doing that, and producing, I love bass lines, I play drums, I love to write, and I love to write, you know, like, like to create, like, little bops on the track and be an instrument, like a jazz solo or something, so it just kind of works together when you think, when I think about how I approach it.

• 31:42Speaker 03

And so do you just, you, do you have to carve out time to do it, or you just, you, do you do, write music when you're just feeling it?

• 31:48Speaker 05

When I'm inspired, yeah, that's, I mean, I even named the album Inspired because literally, I was really not tripping off doing any music, and then I was like, I got inspired. And I said, look at all that we're doing, and I had a strong premonition about what we were about to do, and I said, now is the time for me to speak out and narrate this thing and give people a brand in Bakersfield to really look to, and, and that's important. We look at little cities and we don't do stuff like that, but we need to, because these kids that I go see, they need it, dude, they need somebody to come in and see about them, like, and they need it to be somebody that they feel is important, so we have to strengthen the brand so that these kids can have something to say, man, this is fly.

• 32:26Speaker 03

You know, kind of going back to church, there's been a very rapid decline in church attendance in, in North America for the past 20 years.

• 32:35Speaker 05

  Of course.

• 32:36Speaker 03

And so what it's leaving is a lot of our youth are really only interacting with other adults at school.

• 32:43Speaker 05

  Exactly.

• 32:44Speaker 03

So maybe if there's a teacher that cares, maybe if there's a teacher that pays attention to them, they might get some mentorship, but there is, I'm, I'm concerned a little bit about, you know, where, where we might be heading, you know, here's a, here's a. Message from a listener, maybe you can help answer this. It says, wow, this is a local nonprofit. I've never heard of it, but sounds great for the local kiddos. When did the organization start up? Would like to donate or help out if possible. God bless. This is from Nate.

• 33:10Speaker 05

You better let the Lord use you right now, Nate.

• 33:14Speaker 05

You're doing the right thing, brother Nate. Our website is TYM4change.org.

• 33:21Speaker 03

And the four is number, so TYM, the number four, change.org.

• 33:25Speaker 05

Yeah, and if you want to go look more at what we're doing, you can also go to our Instagram, which is TYM4C Kern. And that's on IG.

• 33:34Speaker 03

So, part of your also time, you spend at 103.9, you have a show, The Danger Zone.

• 33:42Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 33:43Speaker 03

  So, what's the show for?

• 33:45Speaker 05

Man, the show is another, just another outlet to just connect everything. So that's why I'm saying the more you talk about it with me, the more you'll see how it's really all connected. That's why I don't have to go over there and think too hard, because I've already been all over the city. I've already seen what's popping. I already know what I want to talk about, and I'm already using my own music in the background. So, I don't really need nothing. I just go with what I have, put it together. Say, I was just here, I was just there, we're about to go here, this is coming next. Then I'll touch on some stuff that I think is humorous in society, just for a little gumbo.

• 34:13Speaker 03

So it's like a talk show?

• 34:14Speaker 05

Yeah, a little gumbo, yeah, yeah, more or less. It started out just guests only. But I moved to 51039 and I decided to go more in on just doing, giving people updates. And as you drive around the city, you know it's fly, you know where you're at, you know what's going on in the east and the west, south and north. Just kind of keeping people engaged.

• 34:30Speaker 03

And you are everywhere. Frank, you mentioned it, you ran into, ran into Jovan somewhere.

• 34:34Speaker 04

Yeah, the groundbreaking at, at Deloro.

• 34:39Speaker 03

And I also, so we're involved in the Woolworths Project downtown.

• 34:44Speaker 05

  Oh, yeah, man.

• 34:44Speaker 03

And so we're trying to put together.

• 34:46Speaker 05

  Bring me in, man.

• 34:47Speaker 03

Yeah, we already have, you've already helped us, because we wanted to bring in the community. And, and so, you know, we were asking around, you know, Cal State, BC, all the other community leaders in town. Who should we talk to? Who should we talk? You came up multiple times. You know Jovon Dangerfield? I know his music. Well, you've got to reach out to him, and so you've been kind of helpful. Already in giving some input on what we're doing at the Woolworths Project. So yeah, I'm just, I think this is the type of stuff that we need in Bakersfield. Every community needs us, but I'm so glad that you're here in town doing this stuff.

• 35:23Speaker 05

  Thank you.

• 35:23Speaker 03

Anything else that you want to leave?

• 35:25Speaker 05

Yeah, I mean, time for change, you know, the work that we do is really hard. So once again, if you can go to TYM4change.org, if you could donate to us and help us, we could just do even more and we can do it faster. And the one thing that's in our way sometimes is just not having enough capital to do all the things that we can do.

• 35:43Speaker 03

Yeah, it's a nonprofit. There's really literally no profit.

• 35:48Speaker 05

  No profit.

• 35:48Speaker 03

  But there's still expenses.

• 35:49Speaker 05

Right, so we're creating things, we're not just begging for money, we're creating things to provide actual services so that we can make capital. But when you help us, dude, I'm telling you, you're helping, you're helping a city's worth of youth and you're helping the community east, west, south, north.

• 36:03Speaker 03

How many kids do you generally are you able to?

• 36:05Speaker 05

Internally, we're reaching, you know, 30, but externally, we're reaching thousands.

• 36:09Speaker 03

Oh, yeah, I mean, all the assemblies and all of that. But you've got a solid group of kids there that you're interacting with regularly. The leadership group.

• 36:16Speaker 05

That's the Equity Rise Leadership Group, but now we're going to opening it up to any youth and then this group will stay locked in. It's kind of like the apex. If you make it to a certain level and you're ready to get in the leadership group, we'll bring you in and you can really learn how to do what we do and really know what go in with that.

• 36:30Speaker 03

Yeah, well, awesome. Thank you so much for joining the Money Wise Show and coming on. I really appreciate it. Want to remind all the listeners, if you want to support or find out more, go to TYM, the number four, change.org. You can find out more about this really great local nonprofit.

• 36:47Speaker 05

We're the Money Wise Show. Want to thank Joe Von Dangerfield again. Again, there's some more of his music. Go check out TYM for Change, great nonprofit, doing a lot of good work out there. Frank Lee.

• 37:36Speaker 04

I'll have to check out his music later.

• 37:37Speaker 03

Yeah, again, I'm a fan. Good stuff. I wanted to go over, if we can, a... Well, I guess we got a listener message here. It says, talking about, we were talking about flying cars earlier. It says, "We were down in Los Angeles a few weeks ago and so weird to see the self-driving Waymo cars. Looked like it had a bender, a blender on top of it."

• 38:01Speaker 04

  Yep, that's the camera.

• 38:02Speaker 03

"It was really strange, but didn't get to ride in one." Yeah, we had Justin Leland, one of the advisors here, rode in a Waymo up in San Francisco. And his complaint was that the human drivers, when they see a Waymo car, they'll just cut it off because there's, you know, you can't make a driver mad. The robot's not going to get mad at you. So it was a little slower than normal.

• 38:25Speaker 04

Yeah, they have very, was it, conservative processes to make it so it's safe. So any slight, what is it, if like the driver on another car, or like, not just the Tesla car, but...

• 38:44Speaker 00

The self-driving Teslas will do that too. When we got close to a big rig, it like started braking.

• 38:49Speaker 04

It started braking, yeah. So I think in nature, they've said it so to where it protects the driver inside. But yeah, I hear people just taking advantage of that, just cutting off the Waymos.

• 39:01Speaker 03

It'll stop, it'll have to stop, watch. Speaking of Justin Leland, tune in tomorrow, Scott Cox Show at 7:30. He's going to be on the Scott Cox Show, K-9 Radio, 96.1 FM. Good luck, Justin, with that. We want to, I want to bring up, before we end the show, I've been itching to talk about this, because it's one of my favorite topics. Mentors.

• 39:28Speaker 00

  Taylor Swift.

• 39:29Speaker 03

Yes, it's Taylor Swift. Warren Buffett, he is the founder of Berkshire Hathaway. This is a trillion dollar company. They're worth about a trillion dollars and it's a conglomerate. They own, they own basically, they basically buy companies and invest in mostly publicly traded companies like Coca-Cola and.

• 39:53Speaker 04

  Apple.

• 39:54Speaker 03

Apple. I'm trying to think of their other big holdings. I mean, they've got a ton of it. If you look at, you know, a lot of the large cap companies, GEICO was one of their big investments, Burlington Northern. So this, I'd love reading the shareholders' letter or the annual letters to shareholders because he just writes in this real folksy, human way. So I wanted to pick out a few of these things here, talk to you, Frank, about it. One thing that stuck out was the fact that he has a preference for equities and still has a preference for equities over cash. He's always been an advocate and been very bullish on American companies and American well-run companies.

• 40:39Speaker 03

But he sometimes gets flack for how much cash he has. Currently, $334 billion in cash, which, yeah, it does seem like a lot, but again, most of it's still in stock.

• 40:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 40:57Speaker 03

Right? It's over 60% still in stock.

• 41:00Speaker 04

Yeah, yeah. It sounds like it's a 60-40 portfolio, you know?

• 41:03Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:04Speaker 04

And maybe, maybe he's doing that for strategic reasons.

• 41:08Speaker 03

  Right.

• 41:10Speaker 04

Like with bonds and interest rates, like maybe they were getting a better, you know, rate of return on those or just wanting to have some extra cash on hand or, again, just making some strategic plays.

• 41:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:22Speaker 04

It's only 40% or less of his overall portfolio.

• 41:26Speaker 03

Exactly. And I think, I think what happens is you have investors trying to read the tea leaves and say, oh, geez, he's got so much in cash, he's expecting a crash. A crash is gonna come.

• 41:36Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 41:37Speaker 03

Warren Buffett. Not a timer, he's not a market timer, he's not, he does, he does have, I love the Buffett indicator, which is a really simple indicator to determine whether or not the market might be overvalued. And essentially you take the Wilshire 5000, which is almost all of the publicly traded companies in the country. And you take the market capitalization of the Wilshire 5000 and then you compare it to the GDP. The country's GDP.

• 42:05Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 42:06Speaker 03

And when it starts to reach 100%, then you have, in his opinion, you have a potential scenario where the market's overvalued. Because logically, if you think about it, well, you shouldn't have publicly traded companies, these companies worth more than the GDP. Because they are the GDP, essentially. I'm really dumbing down the Buffett indicator. But I really like that because it's a real simple way. It's easier for me and most people than, you know, following the Cape ratio or whatever. So another kind of insight from the letter to shareholders from Berkshire Hathaway is the significant tax contributions. Last year, this is the quote directly from the letter by Warren Buffett, he says, Berkshire last year made four payments to the IRS

• 42:50Speaker 03

that totaled $26.8 billion. That's about 5% of what all of corporate America paid. So that's, isn't that unbelievable?

• 43:00Speaker 04

  Just from him alone.

• 43:01Speaker 03

Yeah, just from, basically, $26 billion, almost $27 billion. But the amount that that makes up, and you'll hear this from investors sometimes, they'll, they'll, especially now in tax season, they're looking at their 1099 from their investment accounts and they're going, why am I paying taxes on these gains? Well, it's because you had gains.

• 43:25Speaker 04

  Simple reason.

• 43:26Speaker 03

Yeah. I mean, you don't, obviously you don't want to pay taxes that you don't have to pay. And if there's some tax strategies that you can use to minimize your taxes, great. But at the end of the day, you pay taxes when you make money. And, you know, that's certainly what happened last year with Berkshire. But that, yeah, seriously, 26 billion.

• 43:44Speaker 04

Yeah. And I think to point on that, him paying taxes on gains is that.

• 43:51Speaker 04

We all know Warren Buffett as this long-term investor, but in Berkshire Hathaway, they're actually making trades more on the short term. So it explains some of the capital gains, but also they're probably trimming some of their long-term holdings as well. So you have the capital gains.

• 44:09Speaker 03

  Right.

• 44:10Speaker 04

But that just goes to show that just because they're selling a portion of their shares in something does not mean that he's overall bearish on a market. Because I've gotten messages from people like, hey, he's selling this. It's like, last time he did this, this was the stock market crash, when what he was selling was less than 0.01% of his portfolio.

• 44:31Speaker 03

  Right.

• 44:32Speaker 04

So it's like, you kind of have to look at the big picture.

• 44:34Speaker 03

Yeah. Warren Buffett is the perfect target for clickbait or headlines.

• 44:39Speaker 04

  Right, right.

• 44:40Speaker 03

Clickbait where it's like, Warren Buffett says the crash is coming. Read here. And then, oh, okay, whatever. It's like that. They'll say, oh, he's selling off his S and P 500.

• 44:49Speaker 04

  Right, right.

• 44:50Speaker 03

Position. And it's like, oh, my gosh.

• 44:51Speaker 04

  Yeah.
