Hello, hearts are pounding listeners. We all inherit stories. Some are told proudly at every holiday while others live in hushed tones over old photo albums. The legends pass down through generations, half remembered, half hidden, and always lingering in the backs of our minds. On Family Lore, they take a thoughtful look at the narratives families protect and the deep curiosity required to finally look behind the curtain. It explores the nuance of our origins and asks the questions we were always too hesitant to voice. Because when you look closely enough, you realize that family history isn't just a timeline of the past. It's the greatest mystery we're born into. Enjoy this preview of Family Lore, and when you're ready to get to the bottom of these mysteries, search for Family Lore wherever you get your podcasts.

So here is what I want to understand.

• 0:47Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 0:47Speaker 01

What made you so interested in all this ancestral lines and ancestral influences?

• 0:54Speaker 02

So I've been interested in it for so long that I can't remember when it started, but all I could tell you-

  From your childhood?

  Childhood.

• 1:02Speaker 01

Did you do the DNA test?

• 1:03Speaker 02

I've not done that. I wasn't all that interested in the statistical breakdown of my DNA. I'm more interested in the stories-

  Stories of your ancestors.

• 1:12Speaker 02

Of my ancestors and the circumstances that moved them around the planet.

Every family has its stories. Your grandparents met on a blind date, or your great grandmother passed through Ellis Island. But every once in a while, you'll hear something a little more unusual.

• 1:32Speaker 03

I have a really vague memory of somebody saying, "Did you know your great uncle killed somebody?"

I've heard my whole life that she invented the margarita.

• 1:43Speaker 05

He gets a patent one month before the Wright brothers. Oh my God.

Some of these stories are hard to believe. Others are hard to imagine. And as these tall tales get passed down through the generations, they become something more than a family story. They become family lore. My name is Lloyd Lockridge, and in this podcast, I'm going to have people on to tell stories about their families. And then, we're going to investigate those stories and find out how much of it is true.

Old family story that I overheard in my grandmother's kitchen is true.

• 2:36Speaker 06

You're always wondering why your dad is a certain way. Well, here's one answer.

• 2:42Speaker 05

I love when I hear somebody says, I have a boring family history. They didn't do anything. I say, it's because you don't know anything about your history.
