A head from lovely Suzanne Abir on The Night Manager. And I was massively pregnant. And she said, "Could you walk less pregnant?" "No. There's a head in my pelvis, so no." Prepare your ears, humans. Happy, sad, confused begins now.

• 1:22Josh Horowitz?

Hey guys, I'm Josh and welcome to another edition of Happy, Sad, Confused. Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman, Need I Say More They are the main event on the podcast today. Thanks, guys, as always, for checking out my podcast. Whether you're listening or watching, I appreciate you. A real treat to get these two dynamic, amazing, brilliant, very funny actors together, talking about their new movie, The Roses, their collaborations, their pet peeves, all sorts of fun stuff in this episode. Brief things to mention before we get into the main event today. By the time you're listening or watching this, I will hopefully be in Telluride, Colorado for the Telluride Film Festival, which I've been going to for the last several years. It is such a privilege, so amazing to go.

• 2:06Josh Horowitz?

If you ever have the opportunity, it is a hard place to get into for a variety of Party of reasons, but wow, what a treat to be there to see the best films emerge for the fall season. So I'm saying that not to brag, but just to say this is something to look for for you guys on the podcast, because I'll be recording a couple of episodes of the podcast on the ground in Telluride, if all goes according to plan. I will also then be talking from the Toronto Film Festival almost immediately thereafter. Yes, the fall movie season really comes at you really fast when once it launches. So all which is to say, if you're into the quality movies coming out this fall, keep it right here on Happy Sad Confused, because I've got you covered with some really cool conversations slated

• 2:49Josh Horowitz?

So check it out if you if you can.

• 3:22Josh Horowitz?

Okay, this conversation is a delight. How could it not be? Cumberbatch and Coleman, come on, guys. They are starring in the new remake of War of the Roses. Remember War of the Roses? I do. I grew up with that movie. Kathleen Turner, Michael Douglas. This is a reimagining. This comes to us with quite the pedigree. Not only is it directed by Jay Roach, not only is it written by Tony McNamara, amazing screenwriter, but front and center, you got Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch. I remember as soon as this movie was announced, I was like, yes, a thousand times, yes, I am in. Very black comedy. They are both really fun together. They clearly, as you'll see in this conversation, go way back as friends, but had never worked together before.

• 4:06Josh Horowitz?

So this was a really rare and unique opportunity. I will say a couple just notes for this. We recorded this actually quite a ways back because they are both so busy and had trouble kind of like coordinating schedules. So I took the advantage of getting them when I could over Zoom a while back. Now, doing it over Zoom, I will say, was not my ideal. Obviously, the podcast I do a lot of different ways. Sometimes it's in person. Sometimes it's their live events. Sometimes it is over Zoom. This one in particular was a little challenging, the Zoom aspect, I will be honest, because sometimes it's hard when you're talking to two people, let alone two very fast talking people talking to each other. Benedict is like such like a bundle of nervous fun energy

• 4:49Josh Horowitz?

always, that I think he's much easier to talk to, to be honest, when you're vibing in the room with him. We still had a great time, but there was like one, for instance, you'll hear or watch in this conversation, one total disconnect when I'm like quizzing them a little bit about Marvel and they totally didn't understand the question. Maybe it was me, maybe it was the Zoom. Anyway, I'm in my own head about this, so I'm just like letting you guys know, there are some times in this conversation where it feels like, to me, I'm not like quite clear on what they're saying, they're not quite clear on what I'm saying. That being said, smiles all around, laughs all around. This is about 35 minutes of a lot of fun. So I know you'll dig it. I'm just saying it out loud because it was

• 5:29Josh Horowitz?

in my head and, you know, I want to be transparent with you guys. I think that's it. I hope you guys enjoy this. It's also a little bit of a shorter conversation than we usually do. But again, how can I say no to 35 minutes with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman? I mean, come on. Enjoy this chat. Check out The Roses. It's in theaters this Friday. And I'll see you on the next one from Telluride. Oh, Josh, it's so good to see you both. Your movie is delightful. A lot of people, look, their dream couple is like the Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, the Zendaya, the Tom Holland. This, this is my couple.

• 6:08Speaker 04

  Yes, Josh! You're our guy.

• 6:11Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 6:11Speaker 04

  Thank you very much.

• 6:13Josh Horowitz?

Who, though, who would win in a fight to the death? You, you guys versus Tom Holland and Zendaya? How does it go down?

• 6:19Speaker 02

Oh, they would win, wouldn't they? Sorry. No, that was awful. You've only got one.

• 6:23Speaker 04

You've got more resources. Why not? I'd be useless. Yes, it's true.

• 6:26Speaker 02

  Currently, we wouldn't win.

• 6:28Speaker 04

  No, we wouldn't.

• 6:28Speaker 02

Give us some warning and don't give them any warning and maybe we'll be all right.

• 6:31Speaker 04

Hang on a split second. They're a real couple. What do you mean, a warring couple? As in them fighting us, you mean?

• 6:38Speaker 02

Yeah, fighting us. That's what I imagined.

• 6:41Speaker 04

Sure, sorry. I just got a little lost into the sort of thing of what we're doing. It was a fighting couple of fictionally. Hmm. But we have maturity on our side.

• 6:50Speaker 02

Are you talking about fisty cuffs?

• 6:51Speaker 04

They're very mature as well, though, for their age. That's ridiculous.

• 6:53Josh Horowitz?

  Experience.

• 6:55Speaker 02

  Experience.

• 6:55Speaker 04

Experience is the word. Yeah, you're right.

• 6:58Speaker 02

I would do something, look over there and then run the other way.

• 7:01Speaker 04

Pull my finger and fart and the whole room.

• 7:02Speaker 02

Then they couldn't, they wouldn't be able to fight after that. They'd be giggling or coughing.

• 7:06Speaker 04

Livia has the power of laughter and do they as much? I don't know.

• 7:10Speaker 02

  I bet they do.

• 7:11Josh Horowitz?

I just don't know until the crossover movie happens. Spider-Man.

• 7:14Speaker 04

Next time I see them, that's all they're gonna be able to talk to me about. But yeah, it's.

• 7:19Josh Horowitz?

Guys, talk to me a little bit about, I mean, this is a dream scenario, I would imagine as an actor. Not only do you get to work with somebody you love and respect, but you get paid to insult them for weeks at a time and be vile to each other.

• 7:30Speaker 04

With Tony Matnamaro's words, don't forget.

• 7:33Speaker 02

Yeah, so the insults are better than we would do ourselves.

• 7:36Speaker 04

Possibly. I mean, yeah, he's a genius and it was a joy. And we wanted to do this for a while, insult each other publicly in a film. And it's come about just, just about time. Um, no, but seriously, yeah, it's just, it's heaven. It's heaven. You have to kind of pinch yourself and get well. And these, these are rare jobs, that all of those ingredients to line up.

• 7:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:56Speaker 04

And she's phenomenal. And I, I, you know, friends, but also as a friend, just going, I'm so proud of this person who's just, you know, taking on the world. And making the whole world fall in love with us the way we all do as her friends. And then to get the chance to enter that and, and experience it on a set and, and just to work with a friend is a joy, but especially this one. It really was a lot of fun.

• 8:18Speaker 02

Ben has an amazing skill of, of saying beautiful things first and then you, then you go, well, I feel that.

• 8:25Speaker 04

Just caffeine. Same, ditto. Yeah, exactly. It's authentic, but caffeine.

• 8:30Speaker 02

It's so lovely. You're incredible. He's the nicest, kindest person ever. Says the nicest things too, don't you?

• 8:37Speaker 04

I wish that was always true, but in this instance it is because I, it's very easy. It's authentic because she is authentic. So, yeah.

• 8:44Josh Horowitz?

Can I ask you guys, have you ever, whether in this film or, or any, any project, said something so vile in a scene to a co-star? In, in the script, of course, that you found yourself having to apologize immediately after, like, oh my God, I'm so sorry.

• 8:58Speaker 04

I mean, yeah, well, with children, yes. I, I had, I've had to lose my patience with children and go, I'm just, I'm acting. I really love you. I'm sorry I'm shouting in your faces. You know, it's a very, very bizarre thing to be on a film set as a kid, let alone then having an adult shouting at you.

• 9:11Speaker 02

  In Les Miserables.

• 9:12Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 9:12Speaker 02

And I was meant to hit this little girl. Oh God, and she had padding all down her back, but I had a belt and I was meant to hit her.

• 9:19Speaker 04

  Oh God.

• 9:19Speaker 02

And then I, I hit her once, half-heartedly, and I burst into tears and I can't do it, I can't do that. And she was going, look, do it, look. I was just hitting herself. Oh, yeah, I struggled. And there was also one little girl, who was the younger version, who didn't speak English. And, and I said, oh, well, she started to look like she was crying, and I went, oh, shut up. And because I thought she was acting, but she actually started to cry. And I went, oh, my God, I'm so sorry. And then, oh, it was awful.

• 9:48Speaker 04

That's a horrible day at work.

• 9:49Speaker 02

Yeah, you're right. Shouting at children is horrendous.

• 9:52Speaker 04

The child in me was a little bit perturbed when things go very awry in our film and as characters. And I did have a moment of going, I need to check in with my friends. This is feeling quite, I'm smarting from some of this.

• 10:03Josh Horowitz?

Right, I'm too good at this. This is too real.

• 10:05Speaker 04

No, she was. And I was like, is this coming from a place of, it's stupid. But, you know, you get, you get a bit wrapped up in yourself, don't you, sometimes, full, full stop, especially when you're pretending to be people in that situation. But, yeah, I just had a moment of going, okay, we're good, we're good. I just want to, and she was more like, we'd had such fun. And then it did, it does get very dark, this film. There's a lot of nuance to it. And, and some pathos because of the humour in a way. And when it got a little bit.

• 10:30Speaker 02

I've worked out what we have to do.

• 10:31Speaker 04

What do we have to do?

• 10:32Speaker 02

So you know when dogs are fighting?

• 10:33Speaker 04

You worked out what we had to do on the day. You were always there, just making me go, oh, stop, and making me laugh.

• 10:39Speaker 02

But you know when dogs are fighting?

• 10:40Speaker 04

  I do.

• 10:40Speaker 02

  Or play fighting?

• 10:41Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 10:41Speaker 02

But then they go, have you noticed that?

• 10:43Speaker 04

  No.

• 10:44Speaker 02

They do little false sneezes. It means, I still love you, I'm not actually cross. That's what they're doing.

• 10:49Speaker 04

  Are you serious?

• 10:49Speaker 02

So we need to go, shut your face. And then we'll be fine.

• 10:53Josh Horowitz?

Here we go. Just a little light sneeze means you still love each other.

• 10:56Speaker 02

  Sorry?

• 10:57Speaker 04

Blow a snot on each other.

• 10:59Josh Horowitz?

Exactly. That's the true demonstration of love.

• 11:02Speaker 04

Back of lip sync territory. Hmm, where'd it come from?

• 11:05Josh Horowitz?

Is there, you know, Olivia, I just caught up with our mutual buddy Dakota Johnson the other day. Lovely, as always.

• 11:13Speaker 02

Did you actually, like, hang out, go out? Or were you doing press things?

• 11:16Josh Horowitz?

Just press, please. Just the real stuff.

• 11:18Speaker 02

  How is she?

• 11:19Josh Horowitz?

  She's amazing.

• 11:20Speaker 02

  She got really ugly.

• 11:21Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 11:22Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 11:23Speaker 02

  I knew it.

• 11:23Josh Horowitz?

  Turn your head down.

• 11:25Speaker 04

  Thank God.

• 11:26Josh Horowitz?

She has said you are the funniest person she's ever worked with, who, respectively, take your co-star in the room out of the equation. Who is the person that has made you laugh the most in your career on set that's been tough to get through a scene with?

• 11:39Speaker 04

Other than her, oh, Martin Freeman.

• 11:41Speaker 02

Ben Daniels as well, we both struggled.

• 11:43Speaker 04

Ben Daniels as well, yeah. Oh, I do, at least I do remember what I did with Ben. With us, it was all about our wigs in Tudor England. It was in the roses and, you know, the horse that was out of control farting a lot as we were kind of trotting past heads we'd probably ourselves as characters put on a spike. And he was my, he was my wingman as Richard III, which means he was Gloucester. It's a long time ago. And, yeah, we couldn't, that's a really good one. That's a really good one. He perpetually.

• 12:11Speaker 02

  He's so naughty.

• 12:12Speaker 04

And he's the nicest man as well, but he's really naughty.

• 12:14Speaker 02

  He's lovely. Oh, fine.

• 12:17Speaker 04

But he's adorable, Ben Daniels. And Martin, I think, is quite literally the funniest person I've ever met. I mean, he's so whip smart and, yeah.

• 12:28Speaker 02

So I've just remembered Adele Actar as well, who in, in Miserables again.

• 12:33Speaker 04

  Really?

• 12:34Speaker 02

He, there was a fight thing and he actually went, "Ow!" really, really high pitched and really loudly. And he was meant to be a bit of a geezer. And, and I literally held my nose and I had to sit on the floor. So I was trying not to wet myself and hide from the camera. And he kept, and we were giggling so much while this great big bar brawl was happening. Yeah. I love that. You know, like when you're in assembly at school and someone goes, "Who put itching powder on my seat?"

• 13:01Speaker 04

  I know.

• 13:04Josh Horowitz?

All control is lost. One of the scenes, one of the sequences I enjoy running through this film is your character Benedict has a bit of a viral video meltdown.

• 13:14Speaker 04

Yes. I'm not really responsible for how that was put together. So I can laugh at that without it seeming like self indulgence. It's so funny that meme.

• 13:22Josh Horowitz?

Very funny, very funny. But have you, either of you had an experience like talking to someone like me on a carpet at, at a point where you were like, "Oh, my God, I just did something that is going to end me." Like that is really going to compromise my career.

• 13:36Speaker 02

  I think I probably do.

• 13:38Speaker 04

Every single interview, I think I've said something that's gonna compromise my life, let alone my career.

• 13:42Speaker 02

I, uh, if in doubt, we'll do something really childish and say, or say a rude word. And so far, no one seems to have minded.

• 13:51Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 13:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, maybe one day.

• 13:54Speaker 04

I don't look too closely, but yeah, I mean, I also, I got very, very excited at the Oscars the first time I went and photobombed you too, and it was just because.

• 14:05Speaker 02

  Me?

• 14:05Speaker 04

  Uh, no, I did.

• 14:06Speaker 02

  Did you photobomb me?

• 14:07Speaker 04

Did I photobomb you as well?

• 14:08Speaker 02

Is that what you said? Oh, you too?

• 14:10Speaker 04

As in the band, not you, you too.

• 14:12Speaker 02

I was gonna say, sorry. There must be a lot of that with their band name.

• 14:16Speaker 04

I mean, they were all lined up, it was so easy, but I'd also been fed.

• 14:19Josh Horowitz?

  It was the jump, right?

• 14:20Speaker 04

It was the jump, but you know, I'd also been given a lot of alcohol on a red carpet. I don't think, things have probably changed now, but yeah.

• 14:26Speaker 02

  Is that a bad thing?

• 14:27Speaker 04

Well, seemingly not, but I think people obviously knew they were gonna get a really out of control version of me. They just got to give me little miniatures.

• 14:33Speaker 02

  I love it.

• 14:34Speaker 04

It was the Ellen Show gang in particular, they gave me, they were like, here, have some Smirnoff vodka. I don't, not necessarily, could be any brand of vodka, I'm not being brand specific, this isn't an endorsement.

• 14:42Josh Horowitz?

  Drink responsibly.

• 14:43Speaker 04

Yeah, all drinking in general, or a particular brand, because, you know, I wanna get my options open there. Um, but also because, I can't remember, I just do remember, and the world does, cause it's kinda there, at me going ooh, over the top of them.

• 14:57Speaker 02

  I want to find that.

• 14:58Speaker 04

And I think the minute after I did that was like.

• 14:59Josh Horowitz?

It just made us love you more.

• 15:00Speaker 04

That is possibly gonna be, uh, the silliest thing I've done.

• 15:04Speaker 02

I think I might have photobombed behind. Was it your goss?

• 15:10Speaker 04

He's quite tall, yeah, it bothered me.

• 15:12Speaker 02

I did, I did something similar, but not, but no one really noticed, but that sounds brilliant.

• 15:16Speaker 04

I don't know if they're sure, but everyone thought I'd been superimposed, cause I got quite hyped, but I think honestly, I was all over it. I might have just stepped on someone to get the height, I was not in my right mind.

• 15:25Josh Horowitz?

Right, there was a trampoline on the Oscar card, but they don't talk about that.

• 15:27Speaker 04

Yeah, calls, the famous actor, but you know, I just kinda went blink on them, I don't know, you know, I, I, it, the memory's vague, because I was just sort of acting on impulse in front of the world. So yeah, I do, we do, but I don't, trouble, trouble. It's amazing how much fun you can have in an interview, and I come away going, that's gonna be a new story, that's gonna be a clip, that's gonna be a thing that's gonna be extracted and turned into something out of context. That, that makes this process dull, not with you, my friend, and, but you did ask the question.

• 15:56Josh Horowitz?

How about this, let's create a rift between the two of you. Who's a better detective, Ellie Miller at Rod Church or Sherlock?

• 16:03Speaker 02

  I'm not sure that's fair.

• 16:04Speaker 04

Well, she didn't even know it was her husband in that.

• 16:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, hey spoiler, wow!

• 16:09Speaker 04

I'm sorry, but people don't deserve to anymore.

• 16:12Speaker 02

Well, Sherlock Holmes is famously brilliant. I don't think he ever fails, does he?

• 16:14Speaker 04

You can't really top Sherlock, and that's not me competing against her. That's just, you know, that's the writing.

• 16:19Speaker 02

  Yeah. Doyle.

• 16:20Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 16:20Speaker 04

  Doyle. Yeah, get you.

• 16:22Speaker 02

Arthur Conan Doyle. I remembered. You tried an Irish?

• 16:27Speaker 04

  Arthur Conan Doyle.

• 16:29Speaker 02

  Did you? Was it Irish?

• 16:31Speaker 04

  I'm appearing.

• 16:34Speaker 02

Okay, stop. Just deep breath. I'll talk for a little while. Um, so, how are you?

• 16:42Josh Horowitz?

Who's a bigger Marvel fan? I think it's Olivia. I think Olivia knows Marvel better than even you, Ben.

• 16:47Speaker 04

  Unredutably.

• 16:49Josh Horowitz?

  Right?

• 16:50Speaker 04

  Yeah. Try her.

• 16:52Speaker 02

  Oh, no, don't test me.

• 16:53Josh Horowitz?

No, I'm not gonna test you. How many Marvel films as of Fantastic Four have there been? Do you know that?

• 16:59Speaker 04

  Three.

• 16:59Speaker 02

  Three or four? Two.

• 17:01Speaker 04

  Three.

• 17:02Josh Horowitz?

No, I meant MCU films, total, in the MCU.

• 17:06Speaker 02

  With the four in?

• 17:09Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 17:09Speaker 02

  I actually don't know.

• 17:10Speaker 04

Well, with the new one coming up, I would say three. No, as in, yeah, I'd say three.

• 17:17Josh Horowitz?

The entire MCU, I'm saying. This is the American English problem.

• 17:22Speaker 04

  I don't understand.

• 17:23Speaker 02

  I don't really understand.

• 17:24Speaker 04

  You don't mean standalone films?

• 17:26Josh Horowitz?

  It's a Josh problem.

• 17:27Speaker 04

You mean the characters appearing in how many films? What the fuck is going on?

• 17:31Josh Horowitz?

How many MCU films have there been?

• 17:34Speaker 04

How many MCU films have there been? Not with the Fantastic Four.

• 17:37Speaker 02

Have they in all of them?

• 17:38Josh Horowitz?

I said as of the Fantastic Four, how many will have there been, MCU films?

• 17:42Speaker 02

  Oh, I see.

• 17:44Speaker 04

  Characters appearing.

• 17:47Speaker 04

Or how many versions of that franchise?

• 17:49Speaker 02

Plus that one that's coming out?

• 17:51Speaker 04

I have no idea. I have no idea. I mean, what?

• 17:56Speaker 02

  Eighteen. Oh. We don't know.

• 17:59Josh Horowitz?

  Thirty-seven. Thirty-seven.

• 18:00Speaker 04

  Yeah, thirty-seven. I win.

• 18:02Speaker 02

  Thirty-seven?

• 18:03Speaker 04

That's a lot, isn't it? How many have you seen?

• 18:05Speaker 02

  I have not seen thirty-seven.

• 18:08Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 18:09Speaker 02

I haven't seen all of them.

• 18:10Speaker 04

I don't think I... Have I seen all of them?

• 18:13Speaker 02

  I don't think I've seen thirty-seven, so I can't.

• 18:15Speaker 04

Do you count series as films?

• 18:17Josh Horowitz?

  So I count which?

• 18:18Speaker 04

Series as films, so yeah, thirty-seven feature films, that's amazing.

• 18:21Speaker 02

  That's enormous, isn't it?

• 18:22Speaker 04

  It's extraordinary. I think I, I think I have seen them.

• 18:25Speaker 02

Have you? Okay, he's a bigger fan than me.

• 18:28Josh Horowitz?

  Okay.

• 19:39Josh Horowitz?

What have you, what have you learned about your friend? Look, you've known each other for a while. There's the work self and there's the, you know, out of work self. Did you learn something new about each other, seeing each other in this environment?

• 19:50Speaker 04

It's the first time I've been in the working environment, which I'd heard about with her. And it's obvious to the world from people who've already worked with her. But to see the alchemy she brings to set every day and to see what joy it is, and it's genuine. I'm like, God, that's got to cost you, but it doesn't because it's her, it's authentically who she is. And that, that, I guess I knew it in a way, but I really witnessed it for the first time. So that was my kind of novel experience and acting with her, obviously, which was a marvel. But, you know, it was, it was that, it was that kind of alchemy with everyone around us.

• 20:20Speaker 02

  Oh, Ben.

• 20:21Speaker 04

  It's true.

• 20:21Josh Horowitz?

  He did it again.

• 20:22Speaker 02

He did it again. He does this.

• 20:26Speaker 04

And that you could pull her finger and she often farts.

• 20:28Speaker 02

Yeah. Well, I did, I used that, especially when I knew that he needed a little.

• 20:34Speaker 04

Yeah, reassuring that I'm not actually hated by the person I'm acting with. I mean, pathetic, isn't it?

• 20:39Josh Horowitz?

You want to do it in real time? Here we go.

• 20:42Speaker 04

Bit of a delay, you can edit that.

• 20:46Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 20:47Speaker 04

  Go on.

• 20:48Josh Horowitz?

I was gonna say, is it more enjoyable as an actor to play Falling in Love?

• 20:53Speaker 04

This is a blank smoke, but one more important thing, as an actor, watching her, how intuitive she is, given how great she is, she gets her so quickly, so quickly.

• 21:02Speaker 02

  So do you, totally.

• 21:04Speaker 04

I know, I try a lot more trying than her, but you're like...

• 21:07Speaker 02

No, I don't think so. Those emotional scenes, it was so lovely to look into your eyes and you're absolutely there.

• 21:12Speaker 04

That was, I have to sort of put myself there for those bits, but everything, especially comedy, I feel like I've just gotta, this isn't, I haven't done as nearly as much as Olivia, I've had funny bits in films, never quite this focused, and...

• 21:25Speaker 02

And it was all there, your fingertips, you were natural.

• 21:27Speaker 04

Well, no, I think I had to really kind of...

• 21:28Speaker 02

I think because it's scary if you haven't done much of it before.

• 21:31Speaker 04

  To trust it.

• 21:32Speaker 02

Yeah, but you totally got it.

• 21:34Speaker 04

But not as quick, not, she's been very kind, but I will say not as quickly as Olivia, it is, yeah. It is kind of...

• 21:42Josh Horowitz?

Do you remember, Benedict, the sketch that we did, that you had not even read the script for, you walked into and you were unbelievable.

• 21:50Speaker 02

  There you are, you see?

• 21:51Speaker 04

  What was it?

• 21:52Josh Horowitz?

This was a masterclass actor parody.

• 21:54Speaker 04

  Oh, the abusive acting coach.

• 21:56Josh Horowitz?

  You were unbelievable.

• 21:58Speaker 04

It was great, until I actually, I think I did punch someone in it, I mean, no.

• 22:01Josh Horowitz?

You did punch my friend Sammy, you fake punched her, but she loved it.

• 22:04Speaker 04

It was a fake punch, and we talked about it.

• 22:07Speaker 02

Oh, like that, sort of punch?

• 22:08Josh Horowitz?

It was in the stomach, it was right in the gut.

• 22:10Speaker 04

It was scripted, I think that bit was in the script. But I didn't, you're right, I didn't know what it was until I watched in the room, but that was fun, you always give me, in those scenarios in the past, you've always given me something really fun to do, and so, I know, I knew when I was being, I knew that Josh was on the card, so I knew it was gonna be a fun thing, and I...

• 22:27Speaker 02

  Fun!

• 22:28Speaker 04

  But thank you.

• 22:29Josh Horowitz?

Amazing, amazing. Do you guys enjoy the, like, I always think about these, the relationship comedies or dramas, the montage of Falling in Love must be so difficult, like, when you have to kind of laugh for hours at an end, you have to kind of gaze at each other longingly, is that something that is as awkward as it seems to me when my second sight thinking about?

• 22:50Speaker 02

I find some bits awkward, anything with skin touching, I find cripplingly embarrassing, and...

• 22:56Speaker 04

It's the least sexy or romantic thing you'll ever do as an actor, or I'll ever do.

• 23:01Speaker 02

  Especially with a friend.

• 23:02Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's super weird.

• 23:03Speaker 02

Ben, all right, it's a, how's it, yeah, how's it?

• 23:05Speaker 04

Yeah, fantastic, all right, let's go.

• 23:06Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, and then, let's get this over with.

• 23:10Speaker 04

Those sounds, the English making nerd. But no, seriously, the um.

• 23:16Speaker 04

Uh, what was the thing? Oh, yeah, the the cute, the meet cute in this is is so well scripted. And it's so immediate and it's very fast. So it's kind of like.

• 23:23Speaker 02

  So it's less embarrassing.

• 23:24Speaker 04

And we laughed a lot when we went into that ice cooler. We're like falling over with our legs and arms scratching the wall.

• 23:30Speaker 02

And because it's left to your imagination, really, we could just do the hand thing and then giggle.

• 23:34Speaker 04

It's a very generous bit of filmmaking.

• 23:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:38Speaker 02

I think because they could tell that I was.

• 23:39Speaker 04

And the montage of love, no, not at all, because that's, it works. The montage of of love in this, I think is quite nice because you jump around in time very fast, you know, you're you're in the problem. You're in, well, you're in, you're in the high peak of their familiedom and then you're pretty straight into the the shift.

• 23:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:58Speaker 04

Where it all kind of gets tested. So.

• 24:01Josh Horowitz?

Yeah. When you think about, look, I love, I love the the War of the Roses back in the the eighties with Kathleen and Michael and.

• 24:07Speaker 04

  So good.

• 24:08Josh Horowitz?

I I learned so much about relationships and love through movies, through TV, especially film, though. Like the Nora Ephron movies, et cetera. Like, when you think back to your childhoods about coming of age as, you know, theater goers, as film goers. What are the films that kind of like resonated with you that taught you something? You think about what relationships were for good or for bad?

• 24:29Speaker 02

God, my my film references are, well. I suppose I watched lots of kids things, obviously, so Chitty Bang Bang. And then falling in love. Do you remember?

• 24:42Speaker 04

  Truly scrumptious.

• 24:43Speaker 02

Yes. And the kids singing around. And there's always a dead mum in those, you know, like all fairy tales.

• 24:49Speaker 04

  Lot of dead parents.

• 24:50Speaker 02

Yeah. And also, It's a Wonderful Life.

• 24:54Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 24:56Speaker 02

Can't even think about it without sobbing. The love of a family.

• 24:59Speaker 04

  Yeah, the power of that.

• 25:00Speaker 02

Yeah. And that good man, I think I fell in love with him and I just wanted a man like him in my life.

• 25:06Speaker 04

Truly Scrumptious is a great sort of, yeah, and also Sound of Music.

• 25:11Speaker 02

  Yes, oh my god, yes.

• 25:13Speaker 04

Romantic and beautiful, again about the power of family and unity and and just, yeah, I'm trying to think of other ones to add to that. I mean, I, as a boy, I kind of, I completely fantasized about being Harrison Ford in pretty much everything he did that I was allowed to watch. You know, whether it was Indy or Han Solo, and they're, they're quite loner, difficult, grumpy, edgy characters, but there's something so charismatic about him in those films, sort of carrying the candle of Bogart from films before and and that, and I thought, I mean, Harrison is incredibly handsome man, but Bogart is a strange looking guy, I thought, but it's not about that. It's actually about the charge of the romance, it's about, it doesn't matter what you look like, essentially, it's who you are and what you do with who you are and.

• 25:54Josh Horowitz?

There's also something i- i- in these kind of films that like gets at like the the uniqueness of that bond in a marriage or any kind of relationship where you say things to each other that you can't say to anybody else and it's, there's this picky, you know, small things that just drive us insane, even though we love our, our partners. I mean, are there, if I asked your partners, your friends, your family, your children even, what's like the little thing that bothers me? I love my dad, I love my mom, but this thing just, I, if they could only just stop doing this, is there anything that comes up a lot about you guys, about you guys with friends and family?

• 26:28Speaker 04

I'm pretty guarded about exposing what I think are flaws in my family to a public for obvious reasons.

• 26:34Speaker 02

  But make something up.

• 26:35Speaker 04

I'll make something up. Um, not being able to find the potato peeler, go to put it back in different drawers every single time. That does happen, actually, you know, when someone's been in the kitchen and I'm kind of looking around for the juicer, well, do you see, we, just a little glass thing you squeeze Amazon. Not, not some fancy bit of kit, but just, it, it's like, oh, I'm spending half an hour looking for shit that used to be where I put it and it's moved because someone's made a cake or something.

• 26:57Josh Horowitz?

  Right.

• 26:58Speaker 04

There you go, there's a pet peeve, which is kind of real, but not.

• 27:01Speaker 02

Is that what they would, they would be cross with you about?

• 27:03Speaker 04

Oh, you see, me? Oh, yeah, interview them. I mean, there's an endless list. Starts in the morning, you know, and ends in late at night.

• 27:11Josh Horowitz?

When they go to bed, yeah.

• 27:12Speaker 04

Yeah, pretty much, and then starts all over again the next day. I hate you. That's not ever. Um, I don't know. I mean, yeah, you'd have to ask them.

• 27:21Josh Horowitz?

  What about you?

• 27:21Speaker 04

Being away from home, actually. Being away from home pisses them off and I pisses me off too.

• 27:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:27Speaker 04

So we try and do as much to make that not the case, two week rule, and try to work as hard as possible on making work happen here. Near a home, so I can get home. Um, or take them with me.

• 27:39Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 27:40Speaker 04

  Or not.

• 27:40Josh Horowitz?

  What's a, what's a, what's a pet peeve in a co-star that you can't abide by? Obviously, you guys get along famously.

• 27:46Speaker 04

  I mean to say anything.

• 27:47Speaker 02

  I know, it's brilliant, isn't it?

• 27:48Speaker 04

  Let's move on.

• 27:49Speaker 02

Um, pet peeve in a co-star, uh.

• 27:54Speaker 04

  Being late.

• 27:55Josh Horowitz?

You've worked with all types of actors.

• 27:57Speaker 04

I've been late a lot today because I've been icing my shell.

• 27:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, that doesn't count. I, I, I do, I mean, yeah, that's.

• 28:03Speaker 04

But that is annoying though. There are people.

• 28:05Speaker 02

No, on set, on work, uh, for work. If you're late for work, I think that's unacceptable. Because the whole crew are there.

• 28:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 28:12Speaker 02

  On time.

• 28:12Speaker 04

  Families and lives.

• 28:13Speaker 02

  Everyone, yeah, exactly.

• 28:14Speaker 04

I agree, I agree. Unless there's a valid excuse, right?

• 28:16Speaker 02

  Oh, it has to be.

• 28:17Speaker 04

Yeah. But I know people who are actually late.

• 28:20Speaker 02

And I sometimes am a little bit sloppy with my lines, but I, on the whole, always know them. When people come in and they really don't know them.

• 28:27Speaker 04

  I've had moments like that.

• 28:27Speaker 02

I think you should fuck off and do a different job because there's a thousand people ready to step into your shoes.

• 28:32Speaker 04

  Exactly.

• 28:32Speaker 02

  Who would appreciate it more.

• 28:34Speaker 04

I've had moments where I've really dropped the ball on projects. I mean, everybody does. I think, and I think, you know, I've, I've managed to forgive myself at those moments.

• 28:41Speaker 02

  Yeah, because.

• 28:42Speaker 04

Um, I'm aware of the other people involved who don't like it.

• 28:47Speaker 02

Also, a big pet peeve, sorry, I jumped in.

• 28:49Speaker 04

No, no, no, no, no, but it's just, it is, it is something that you have, it's, it's a turn up on time and learn your eyes, you know?

• 28:54Speaker 02

And you know, when you watch people, um, shit down and if people who are bullies to people below them.

• 29:00Josh Horowitz?

  Yes.

• 29:01Speaker 04

That is an unbearable, and that's more than a pet peeve. That's like a lifetime crusade to call out.

• 29:05Speaker 02

Yes, it is. And sometimes you see, um, heads of department who sometimes aren't very nice to the, you know, the. The bottom, like trainees or something.

• 29:14Speaker 04

We're very lucky. On the whole, as I would say, my experience at least, and especially, that's one of the reasons I wanted to be producer was to make a working environment that people wanted to be part of. And by and large, I think as a company, I can hold my head up high and say, we have succeeded. There have definitely been moments, I think, post-COVID, a lot of shifting in the industry and a lot of difficulties with certain productions. But it is, it's, it's, it's, it's one of the reasons I wanted to be a producer, to control the means of production and make sure it's a nice time for all. And whether that's catering or the hours or the commute or just treating each other as human beings and having some air to breathe and being nice and polite and grateful.

• 29:49Speaker 02

And a five day week, long negotiable.

• 29:51Speaker 04

Yeah, that's, yeah, bring it, bring it.

• 31:05Josh Horowitz?

Olivia, in recent years, we talked a little bit about this, your guest spot in The Bear, you were in Heartstopper, you've been in some amazing TV shows. Is there anything you still want to get in on that you're just a fan of? Or Ben, for you, are you a fan of anything on TV right now that we should manifest today?

• 31:19Speaker 02

  Is it causing a puddle?

• 31:20Speaker 04

Sorry about that. No, no, no puddle.

• 31:22Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 31:25Speaker 02

  Anything?

• 31:27Josh Horowitz?

TV-wise, is there a show that you guys have been really enjoying that you are either enjoying just as fans or would want to even just pop into?

• 31:33Speaker 02

Oh god, what was I watching? Sirens I'm watching at the moment.

• 31:36Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 31:36Speaker 02

I'm only up to, I've got one to go, so don't say anything.

• 31:41Speaker 04

  Succession's been and gone.

• 31:42Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 31:43Speaker 04

Would have loved to have done something that, I mean...

• 31:48Speaker 02

  Black Doves, I loved that.

• 31:49Speaker 04

Yeah, that was brilliant. I enjoyed that too. They're so good, those two. So good, such good writing as well. Everyone was going to, but Karen, Ben in particular. Well, look, White Lotus, I do look at that. Wouldn't it be nice to go to a beautiful... But it's hard. You're away from your family for a long time.

• 32:05Speaker 02

Unless it's in the school holidays and you could all go together.

• 32:08Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 32:08Speaker 02

  That would be nice.

• 32:09Josh Horowitz?

Get your own little villa in Italy or Thailand, come on.

• 32:13Speaker 02

Thing is though, when I have got the family with me somewhere, invariably they're bored.

• 32:19Speaker 04

Well, because they're not doing the thing that you're doing, going, why are we here? We're not seeing mum or dad. And that is true. It still, it doesn't necessarily fix it.

• 32:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:28Speaker 02

It's almost better to be away when they're at school, at least they're busy all day.

• 32:31Speaker 04

  Yeah, exactly.

• 32:31Speaker 02

  I don't know. I don't know.

• 32:33Josh Horowitz?

  Fair enough.

• 32:33Speaker 02

  There's no right answer.

• 32:34Josh Horowitz?

  We're gonna end with this.

• 32:36Speaker 04

Josh, it's a great question, because the, well, I was just gonna say, the best stuff that you watch is always the stuff where you go, I want to be part of that. And it's theater, television, radio, anything, and film. It's the ones that make you go, God, I want to be part of that creative energy and storytelling.

• 32:51Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 32:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:52Josh Horowitz?

I was gonna say, you mentioned theater, and I know you guys have busy family lives. We need to get you in New York doing theater. Just selfishly, I'm dying to see you.

• 32:58Speaker 02

When my youngest has left home, then I'll come and do a play in New York.

• 33:03Speaker 04

Virginia Woolf, we could carry on the marital theme there, or Beatrice and Benedict and Much To Do.

• 33:11Josh Horowitz?

You just wait for Godot together. You could just, whatever you want. Yeah, anything.

• 33:14Speaker 04

Or we could do, is Kiss Me Kate the musical of Taming the Shrew? It is, isn't it?

• 33:18Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 33:18Josh Horowitz?

  I think so.

• 33:19Speaker 04

Would you like to do a musical? Not really.

• 33:21Speaker 02

Yes, if Jesse could sing for me.

• 33:24Speaker 04

She'd be in the back, she'd be upstairs going, "Fuck off." Sorry, you couldn't edit that bit out.

• 33:30Josh Horowitz?

Keeping that, yeah. Okay, the happy second fuse profoundly random questionnaire for you guys. You both can answer these. Are you dog or cat people?

• 33:38Speaker 02

  Dog.

• 33:38Speaker 04

  Dog.

• 33:40Speaker 04

  I like cats, but dogs.

• 33:41Speaker 02

I do like cats, but I've got three dogs.

• 33:42Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 33:43Josh Horowitz?

  Yeah.

• 33:43Speaker 02

And our cat, who was 21 when he died, never really liked us.

• 33:50Speaker 04

  Goodbye cats.

• 33:50Speaker 02

Yeah. I loved him. Didn't like us.

• 33:54Speaker 04

  Oh my.

• 33:55Josh Horowitz?

My god. What do you collect, if anything, either of you?

• 33:58Speaker 02

  What, what?

• 33:59Josh Horowitz?

What do you collect? Do you collect anything in your lives?

• 34:03Speaker 04

A little bit of art. Not fancy fancy, but just, I love art.

• 34:06Speaker 02

That's my heroin, I think. I keep buying pictures.

• 34:09Speaker 04

Well, you've got quite a few heroin. I wish I could go there, but you've got, you've got, you like your furnishings as well.

• 34:16Speaker 02

  I do.

• 34:16Speaker 04

But not collection maybe, that's just.

• 34:18Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't think I have a collection. Well, currently outdoor furniture. That's by accident.

• 34:26Speaker 04

  You just haven't returned them.

• 34:27Speaker 02

No, I just, I've, yeah, I just, I keep finding things in, you know, junkyards and things. Oh, and now we've got too many chairs outside.

• 34:34Speaker 04

  You overpopulated your garden.

• 34:35Speaker 02

Yeah. It looks a bit like a pub garden now.

• 34:37Speaker 04

That's all right. Just invite all the pub around.

• 34:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:39Speaker 04

  Pub, right?

• 34:40Speaker 02

Pub at home. Sorry, you go.

• 34:42Speaker 04

No, no, I don't think I have anything to go on. I think art is the only real thing.

• 34:45Josh Horowitz?

  A little art.

• 34:46Speaker 04

Books, books, books, books, a lot of books. And again, not valuable books. It's not like I'm going, oh, that's additional. I mean, if somebody, and I've had, someone give me one, but it's not, I'm not an obsessive. I just, we buy too many books.

• 34:59Speaker 02

I love, books always make a home look really cosy.

• 35:02Speaker 04

  They really do. I don't, I don't, I'd like to put, it's about a myth that I don't have a stunning collection of supercars worth $700,000.

• 35:13Josh Horowitz?

Is that what has been reported?

• 35:15Speaker 04

I mean, no, but I mean, it was in the papers or, no, it wasn't. It was online in some internet thing.

• 35:19Josh Horowitz?

  We've set the record straight.

• 35:20Speaker 04

It was basically every car that I'd either driven in a show or a film or crashed, as in Doctor Strange, or been photographed near in my life or walked past in a pap shot. It was like, I don't own any of these cars.

• 35:33Josh Horowitz?

  It's coming with me now.

• 35:36Josh Horowitz?

Riding them. This is the Dakota Johnson memorial question, Olivia. She asked me this once and I ask everybody this now.

• 35:42Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 35:43Josh Horowitz?

Would you rather have a mouthful of bees or one bee in your butt?

• 35:47Speaker 02

  Dakota.

• 35:49Speaker 04

I mean, I don't, there's no question I want just one in my butt. Because bee stings are apparently quite therapeutic. I don't imagine you'd live.

• 35:56Speaker 02

  One in my butt?

• 35:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 35:57Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 35:58Speaker 02

Because I reckon it wouldn't survive long.

• 36:00Josh Horowitz?

  Yep.

• 36:01Speaker 04

  No.

• 36:02Speaker 02

Well, not a lot of air there, is it?

• 36:03Speaker 04

A bit of swelling down there for a bit is all right, but in there, you know, you'd die.

• 36:07Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 36:08Speaker 04

You'd die. Have you, I mean, I know people keep talking about bee therapy. Has anyone actually done it? Anyone in this room that you know?

• 36:14Speaker 02

I've never heard of bee therapy.

• 36:15Speaker 04

You literally, you could take a piece of a, I'm saying this because I'm looking through everything now from my shoulder. But it's, you can, you actually sort of target the stings and the, the body's natural defence, the antihistamine it produces is obviously, it reduces swelling, but the swelling brings healing and then.

• 36:32Josh Horowitz?

I don't want that in my life. I don't need that.

• 36:33Speaker 04

I mean, that, putting yourself with nettles is a big thing at the moment in, in natural medicine.

• 36:37Speaker 02

  Is it?

• 36:38Speaker 04

Is it, or is it just like me owning a lot of cars I don't own?

• 36:43Josh Horowitz?

Two more quickly. Last actor either of you were mistaken for?

• 36:47Speaker 02

  Olivia Williams.

• 36:50Josh Horowitz?

  What did Benedict say?

• 36:51Speaker 04

I said Olivia Colman. Um, David, well, not David Tennant, but Doctor Who. So that could be any one of them, I suppose. He's a big old changeable alien. Uh, but Matt Smith at the time, I guess. Love you in Doctor Who. Was American, was American, isn't it? They probably just meant Doctor Strange, to be fair. I mean, a lot. Olivia Williams, you get.

• 37:10Speaker 02

Well, yes, sometimes. And also clarifying, not because we clearly look anything like each other, but I get, I used to get sent her pictures of her to sign. And I would send her a screen grab going, how would you like me to approach this?

• 37:26Josh Horowitz?

And last thing for you guys. What's the worst note a director has ever given you?

• 37:30Speaker 02

I promised the director I would never reveal that.

• 37:34Speaker 04

  Uh, I've had line readings.

• 37:35Speaker 02

I'll tell you, line readings are appalling. Never do that.

• 37:41Speaker 04

  And, and.

• 37:43Speaker 02

  I've had some funny ones.

• 37:44Speaker 04

  Faster and funnier.

• 37:46Speaker 02

I had, I had from lovely Susanna Beer on The Night Manager, and I was massively pregnant. And she said, could you walk less pregnant?

• 37:56Speaker 02

No. There's a head in my pelvis, so no.

• 38:03Speaker 02

  That was a good one.

• 38:06Josh Horowitz?

Ben, you haven't gotten that note at least.

• 38:08Speaker 04

I can't top that, no, no, I've never had the pregnant note.

• 38:12Speaker 04

I always run blank on things like this. I've had some true shockers, but I've also been very lucky to work with directors who are great. A few over-caffeinated moments where people just sort of started, do you know what I mean? And after the sort of 50th day of shooting, I had to say, no, I'm sorry, I'm at a loss because all I've heard you do is stammer, do you know what I mean? That was a moment. But, no, I don't know. Even the worst, you understand what they are good at, and it might not be directing actors, but it might be a visual sense or just an amazing technical mastery of their craft from behind the lens, or an idea of what they want the audience to think or feel, which is sometimes a little bit jumping the gun for me.

• 38:53Speaker 04

It can be dead when you're worrying about the audience. You should be focusing on that thing there and then hoping that from that, the thing is good enough to affect an audience in the way you want it to.

• 39:04Speaker 04

But yeah, yeah, no, I've had lots of stuff through bullhorns and I've had other people's acting people going, wow, I'm glad I'm not in that scene. Like, more crying. No, no, more, more crying.

• 39:19Speaker 02

The funniest ones are, you know.

• 39:20Speaker 04

How's that work? It's essentially using emotions on a mixing board.

• 39:23Speaker 02

Do you remember you would go and do adverts and things back in the day and voiceovers where they go, and through the box, "Could you be happier, please?" So then you did really happy. So you sounded a bit happy, could you do it less happy? What? And that's really annoying.

• 39:38Speaker 04

The annoying, do you ever get this thing as well where you go, can I try one when I just, I don't, I don't, I can't quite look at that person? That's great. Okay. Bennett, can you try doing one where you, and they literally just say what you've said to them? And it's like, okay, I get it. You take ownership for it. It's fine. I'm not precious. But it's really, yeah.

• 39:56Josh Horowitz?

Well, for my metaphorical bullhorn in New York, you guys did great today. It's good to see you even from afar. Hopefully in person next time. Congratulations on the roses. Thank you for indulging my silliness as always.

• 40:09Speaker 02

  Oh, really fun.

• 40:11Speaker 04

  We love it.

• 40:11Speaker 02

Thank you very much. Give my love a toto, please.

• 40:13Speaker 04

Yes, mine too, please. She's also a fan of mine and I love her.

• 40:16Speaker 02

And ask her, hands for feet or feet for hands?

• 40:20Josh Horowitz?

Right back at her. Perfect. I love it.

• 40:21Speaker 04

  She'll know what that means.

• 40:22Josh Horowitz?

Have a good one, guys. Thank you so much.

• 40:23Speaker 04

  Bye, bye.
