• 1:47Tig Notaro?

  Pretty little episode.

• 1:51Tig Notaro?

I heard you chime in there.

• 1:53Fortune Feimster?

I did. I was just, you know, really struck by the moment.

• 1:58Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's a catchy little tune.

• 2:00Fortune Feimster?

It sure is. Our little cowboy did a good job with that.

• 2:04Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 2:05Fortune Feimster?

And us singing like songbirds was pretty amazing, too.

• 2:08Tig Notaro?

  I mean.

• 2:09Fortune Feimster?

  Deep tenor of yours.

• 2:11Tig Notaro?

I should have taken a solo.

• 2:14Fortune Feimster?

You should have. Well, welcome to the Hands a Pod's prelude episode.

• 2:21Tig Notaro?

I'm Fortune Feimster. And I am Tig Notaro.

• 2:25Fortune Feimster?

  I'm eating apple pie.

• 2:27Tig Notaro?

Wait, why do you have an apple pie?

• 2:29Fortune Feimster?

Um, because it was just Thanksgiving.

• 2:34Tig Notaro?

No, it wasn't, Fortune. We are pre-recording this.

• 2:38Fortune Feimster?

  God dang it.

• 2:39Tig Notaro?

Weeks, a month in advance. It is not Thanksgiving. Why? How does one end up with an apple pie in their house?

• 2:49Fortune Feimster?

I wanted to use Thanksgiving as an excuse. Um, it was served on set last night.

• 2:55Tig Notaro?

Oh, and were you like, could I just take that home?

• 2:59Fortune Feimster?

Just took a bowl to go.

• 3:02Tig Notaro?

Oh, I thought you took the whole pie. I was like, God, that's so bold.

• 3:06Fortune Feimster?

Listen, I love food, but I'm not that crazy. I, um, yeah, no, I just, I grabbed me a bowl of it.

• 3:13Tig Notaro?

Yeah, why not? How is it?

• 3:15Fortune Feimster?

It's pretty good. It's sweet, though. I, I, um, never thought I'd be that person. I was like, it's too sweet. It's just very sweet.

• 3:24Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 3:25Fortune Feimster?

But my palate has shifted a little bit and it is pretty sweet.

• 3:30Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I like with cake, I like the actual cake part and then just a little bit of frosting on there.

• 3:37Fortune Feimster?

  Hmm.

• 3:38Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 3:38Fortune Feimster?

I still think about this place in St. Louis that had the best vegan cupcake I've ever had. I mean, even up there with regular cupcakes.

• 3:49Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 3:50Fortune Feimster?

It was a, it, it was their version of a hostess cupcake.

• 3:54Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 3:55Fortune Feimster?

  And it was vegan.

• 3:56Tig Notaro?

  And where was this place?

• 3:59Fortune Feimster?

Oh, gosh, what is the name? Hold on, I'll find it right now.

• 4:03Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 4:03Fortune Feimster?

Uh, they also had a great buffalo vegan sandwich.

• 4:07Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 4:08Fortune Feimster?

  St. Louis Vegan.

• 4:10Tig Notaro?

What would it take for you to become vegan? A private chef?

• 4:15Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, I would have to have some good food.

• 4:20Tig Notaro?

  There is good food.

• 4:24Fortune Feimster?

It has to be real tasty.

• 4:28Tig Notaro?

  Sweet art?

• 4:29Fortune Feimster?

I mean, but you and Stephanie are good.

• 4:32Tig Notaro?

  The vegan cake spot.

• 4:33Fortune Feimster?

Oh, sweetheart. Yeah, that's why it's called sweetheart.

• 4:36Tig Notaro?

  Stephanie and I what?

• 4:38Fortune Feimster?

Are good cooks. So you guys.

• 4:39Tig Notaro?

No, I'm not a good cook.

• 4:40Fortune Feimster?

Well, Stephanie is. You told me.

• 4:43Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Stephanie loves her cooking. No, I always tease her.

• 4:48Fortune Feimster?

  Loves her own cooking?

• 4:49Tig Notaro?

  Loves it.

• 4:50Fortune Feimster?

  It's amazing.

• 4:50Tig Notaro?

I'm always like, you are the most hilarious chef because most people make food and go, yeah, but it's a little overdone or it needed a little more salt, but not Stephanie. She is like, oh, my God, this is delicious. Come try it.

• 5:04Fortune Feimster?

That I would love to be able to do that. Everything, everything I make, I'm like, oh, it'll do.

• 5:11Fortune Feimster?

Everything's just like, I'll eat it, but if anyone else was here, I would not let them eat this.

• 5:19Tig Notaro?

I just, I've never seen it and I love it so much how much Stephanie endorses her own cooking. And, and it's great.

• 5:29Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 5:29Tig Notaro?

I'm more of the, the cook that throws things together. You know, that's what I can do.

• 5:36Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. I am pretty good about eating whatever, unless it's seeds, the berries and stuff like that. I'm pretty good about eating whatever someone puts in front of me.

• 5:48Tig Notaro?

  Especially cupcakes.

• 5:50Fortune Feimster?

You don't have to ask me twice about that, sister.

• 5:55Fortune Feimster?

I, I, so one day I'm gonna splurge and have someone start making me food. But I'm not, I'm too busy right now.

• 6:07Tig Notaro?

To have somebody else make food. But can't they do it and then pack it for you and you bring it?

• 6:13Fortune Feimster?

I would, I would be into finding a food delivery services, um, but I got, I want a good one. I've tried a couple.

• 6:20Tig Notaro?

You don't want a bad one?

• 6:21Fortune Feimster?

I don't want a bad one. There are many bad ones out there.

• 6:24Tig Notaro?

But what about an actual chef?

• 6:26Fortune Feimster?

  I would love that, but I don't know who. I don't, I don't have.

• 6:29Tig Notaro?

Well, that would be easy. You just poke around, ask some people. I mean, because I've never heard of somebody saying they're too busy to have someone else cook their food.

• 6:38Fortune Feimster?

I just meant being home, like having someone cooking here, but I, I would not be opposed to hiring a delivery version of that.

• 6:48Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 6:49Fortune Feimster?

I would, I would actually really love that. That would be.

• 6:51Tig Notaro?

Wouldn't that, here's my question about this.

• 6:54Fortune Feimster?

  You ask away.

• 6:56Tig Notaro?

Thank you. Uh, when people hire a private chef.

• 6:59Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 7:01Tig Notaro?

Is that better or less expensive than actually just ordering every meal to your house?

• 7:09Fortune Feimster?

Honestly, I don't know. I just know when you order out, the food's usually fatter, fattier, greasier. Well, because they want it to taste good. So it's gonna have a lot more butter. It's gonna have a lot more whatever.

• 7:22Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 7:23Fortune Feimster?

Cause they want you to keep coming back to their restaurant.

• 7:26Tig Notaro?

Ooh, speaking of whatever. I grabbed a little snack for the road last night from my hotel room.

• 7:33Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 7:34Tig Notaro?

And I thought it was vegan. I looked closer.

• 7:37Fortune Feimster?

  Oh no.

• 7:38Tig Notaro?

  Guess what was in it?

• 7:39Fortune Feimster?

  What?

• 7:39Tig Notaro?

  Something called milk solids.

• 7:43Fortune Feimster?

  What is that?

• 7:44Tig Notaro?

I don't know, but I was like, mil- like already milk is not, is gonna send me running, but milk solids?

• 7:53Fortune Feimster?

  It'll, it'll give you a solid. It'll give you a milk solid. That's a, that's a dookie joke.

• 8:07Fortune Feimster?

  Are you still there?

• 8:10Tig Notaro?

Yes, I'm still here, Fortune Marie.

• 8:16Tig Notaro?

Can you do me a solid and make it milk?

• 8:19Fortune Feimster?

Oh my God. So you put it down? Or you found this out halfway through eating it?

• 8:25Tig Notaro?

I gave it to, um, I gave it to Jessica, the producer of Come See Me in the Good Light. We were at a screening and, and it just became a joke the whole night because like at one point it fell out of her purse. And, um, and it was one of those things where everyone was trying to get rid of this little chocolate snack that had milk solids in it. And, and when I was going to get in my car, she was going to get in hers. I was like, oh, Jessica, really quick. And she was like, oh, yeah. She runs over and I go, here, you forgot your milk solids. And she was like, God damn it. And so she ended up leaving with the food that had the milk solids.

• 9:08Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 9:09Tig Notaro?

I mean, that is just, that's a terrible, terrible description of something.

• 9:15Fortune Feimster?

I know. There's a lot of weird stuff in food, though, that, that's definitely up, up there with the weird ones.

• 9:22Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 9:23Fortune Feimster?

I'm glad you didn't eat it.

• 9:25Tig Notaro?

  Thank you. Me too.

• 9:27Fortune Feimster?

Well, should we, um, get some questions?

• 9:30Tig Notaro?

  I think we should, Fortune.

• 9:31Fortune Feimster?

  Our handsome pod listeners?

• 9:33Tig Notaro?

  I think we should. Absolutely.

• 9:36Fortune Feimster?

  Our handsoms.

• 9:38Speaker 04

Hey, May. Hey, Tig. Hey, Fortune. This is Melissa from Medford, Oregon. About a year ago, I got my mom listening to your podcast and of course she was just instantly hooked. As inspired by Ginger and Fortune's adventures, we're going to take a mother-daughter trip to Palm Springs in December to see Fortune perform live and we are so excited.

• 9:57Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my God.

• 9:58Speaker 04

I was thinking that while we were there, it would be really fun to ask my mom a question or two that I've never asked her before and just kind of inspire a really fun conversation over dinner or something prior to the show. And I was just wondering, what's something that you want to ask your mom but have not yet had the chance? And Tig, what's a question that you really wish you had had the chance to ask your mom? I can't wait to hear your guys' answers and I really look forward to the conversation that this will start between me and my mom. I love you guys all so much. Thank you all for the laughs. Can't wait to hear your answers.

• 10:32Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, sweet.

• 10:33Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's so great. And if I can just out of the gate say that I,

• 10:42Tig Notaro?

man, and I can't encourage you, Fortune, Thomas, anyone listening, I can't, I cannot encourage you enough to do this. It is, I almost was able to do it with my stepfather and I didn't even think to do it with my mother. But I entered, I, I, but I had, I interviewed my brother, I interviewed my cousins. And I, in fact, I have, Thomas, I think, helped me come up with this list of questions. This was years ago.

• 11:09Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, I remember this.

• 11:10Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and I can send them to you, Fortune.

• 11:13Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, I would love that.

• 11:14Tig Notaro?

To interview and record your mother, asking all, asking her and asking your dad, your brothers, and, and it really puts pieces together in your life and, and gives you this understanding of these people that you kind of just took for granted that you know them and, and they have, obviously, we all know, but like, backstories that, details that you, I mean, about their first date together, about when they found out that they were pregnant with you.

• 11:47Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 11:47Tig Notaro?

What was that like? Or, you know, just, I'll, I'll send, I'll send you these questions. But I, it's such a really, really fun exercise and experience.

• 11:58Fortune Feimster?

Oh, but yeah, I've actually was talking about that with somebody recently, where she was like, maybe it's, you know, you should start thinking about, you know, filming your mom, asking her a bunch of questions. My brother's really good at that, so I might have him. Uh, figure that out because I, we did that with my grandmother. I am for a high school project. They, the high school project was to interview someone in your family and I interviewed my grandmother. And it's one of the only videos we have of her.

• 12:29Tig Notaro?

  Oh.

• 12:29Fortune Feimster?

Telling some fam- you know, about the Great Depression and telling some family history and I made copies. I turned that, it was a VHS back in the day. I turned it into a DVD and gave it to all my family.

• 12:41Tig Notaro?

  Oh, amazing.

• 12:42Fortune Feimster?

Years ago and um, so you know, with sort of especially facing mortality in a

• 12:49Tig Notaro?

  Uh huh.

• 12:49Fortune Feimster?

In the way that we are, hopefully not anytime soon, um, that definitely has come up for us of like, it, my mom has, is such a good, uh, has such a good memory.

• 13:00Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 13:01Fortune Feimster?

And you know, the chemo unfortunately, uh, really messes with people's memory and as you know, and um, the, the brain fog is very real. So it would be nice to get her before that, you know, really messes with a, a lot of the memories to, to get a lot of that or, oratorical

• 13:21Tig Notaro?

  Mm hmm.

• 13:21Fortune Feimster?

versions of our, of her life and our family history.

• 13:25Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 13:26Fortune Feimster?

So I would love those questions. I would definitely do that.

• 13:29Tig Notaro?

  It's a really thorough rundown.

• 13:31Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 13:32Tig Notaro?

And um, maybe you could do it where it's like you, your mom, your dad and your brothers all like interacting, getting the same questions and responding with what makes sense in your life. And if something doesn't make sense with that question for you,

• 13:48Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 13:49Tig Notaro?

Um, then you skip past it. But it would be so interesting to see the exchange between your immediate family with those kind of questions.

• 14:03Tig Notaro?

Anyway, do you have a, a question or in, in response to this question?

• 14:10Fortune Feimster?

  Specific one for my mom?

• 14:12Tig Notaro?

  Uh huh.

• 14:12Fortune Feimster?

Um, I would, I would like to get on camera, like my mom talking about my, this, the history of my name Fortune. And, and I would like to get her talking about this story about when I was born.

• 14:25Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 14:26Fortune Feimster?

Um, she has a neat story around that and um,

• 14:30Tig Notaro?

  Mm hmm.

• 14:31Fortune Feimster?

Uh, and talking about my grandmother a little bit.

• 14:34Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 14:35Fortune Feimster?

My mom likes to talk about a lot of the cousin. I'm not really as

• 14:39Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 14:39Fortune Feimster?

  Interested in the extended family.

• 14:42Tig Notaro?

It's like how far. I have a cousin that's so into that kind of stuff.

• 14:47Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 14:47Tig Notaro?

And I'm like, how far back are we going? Are we going to Abe's or, you know what I mean? Like, at what point do we stop?

• 14:55Fortune Feimster?

I just, I'm, I'm more interested in the people that, you know.

• 14:58Tig Notaro?

  You know.

• 14:58Fortune Feimster?

I mean, now that, I don't want to hear about my third cousin that I never met.

• 15:04Tig Notaro?

  Quit bringing her up.

• 15:06Fortune Feimster?

I just want to hear about my mom's life and my grandmother and, and like our childhood. We didn't have a lot of video cameras in my childhood. So there's not a lot of footage from when I was young. So she would, a lot of those memories, my dad's not going to remember a lot of stuff. So a lot of those memories are going to be with my mom. Uh, so I'd like to get some childhood stories and stuff from her perspective and, um, yeah, just, just to kind of her talking about who she is. Would be, would be nice, um.

• 15:41Tig Notaro?

  Or who she was.

• 15:42Fortune Feimster?

  Mm-hmm, yeah.

• 15:43Tig Notaro?

  That's, I, I wish, I mean, God, I have so many questions.

• 15:51Fortune Feimster?

  Questions, yeah.

• 15:52Tig Notaro?

For my mother, my father, my stepfather, and man, I missed the boat.

• 15:57Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 15:57Tig Notaro?

  I missed the boat.

• 16:02Tig Notaro?

I think I'm very curious about, I mean, I could find this out very easily. When they got married. I think it reveals that, I think she got married because she was pregnant with my brother.

• 16:19Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, yeah?

• 16:20Tig Notaro?

Yeah. And, uh, I'm just really curious about what went down because her mother was very, very strict. And conservative. And I think that's what turned my mother into the free spirit artist. Funny, wild person that she was.

• 16:40Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 16:41Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, I'm curious about that.

• 16:43Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. I would encourage anyone to do that with, uh, especially as their parents are getting older. Um, cause I mean, even though I have that one video of my grandmother, I would ask a bazillion more questions too.

• 16:57Tig Notaro?

Absolutely. Interview your grandparents, your siblings, whoever, whoever you're close to, interested in, care about, do it now.

• 17:09Tig Notaro?

  Well, thanks for that, Melissa.

• 17:11Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 17:12Tig Notaro?

I'm so glad that she asked that. It's a good one. What's next?

• 17:17Speaker 05

Hi, Handsome. My name is Evangeline and I'm from Oklahoma. My question for you all is this, is there a particular bit of observational comedy that has stuck with you? And so now every time you encounter that thing in the wild, you think of that joke? For example, like the Seinfeld bit about what's the deal with airplane food? And now every time you're on a plane, you're like, why am I eating pretzels and ginger ale?

• 17:45Fortune Feimster?

  Observational comedy.

• 17:48Tig Notaro?

Yeah. I mean, I always, I don't know who this comedian was, but I,

• 17:54Tig Notaro?

I always thought that this was so funny. When I'm at the beach, I think about it, but some comedian said that everybody's, you know, that shark attacks happen closest to the shore. And everybody's surprised by that. And he's like, oh, that's where all the people, that's where all the people are.

• 18:19Tig Notaro?

  And I was like,

• 18:19Fortune Feimster?

  It's like so obvious.

• 18:20Tig Notaro?

Yeah. It's so simple, but it's like, it's so funny. And another one I love is, I don't know who that is. So whoever that, whoever made that joke, I've known that joke for like 30 years. But when I heard it, I was like, that is hilarious. And then, you know, the comedian Bill Hicks. One of my favorite jokes of his was, you know, like, how come when people do drugs, that they only, only when they're on top of a building do they think they can fly? How come not when they're walking down the street?

• 18:57Fortune Feimster?

  That's funny.

• 18:58Tig Notaro?

Yeah, but I don't ever run into that. I'm never like on drugs or on the rooftop. But when people talk about hallucinations and tripping and whatever, it's.

• 19:10Fortune Feimster?

Are there a lot of comics doing, is there still a lot of observational humor going on right now? Trying to think of modern day comics.

• 19:19Tig Notaro?

  Oddly, don't follow.

• 19:21Fortune Feimster?

  I know. I can't believe as a stand up, I'd not.

• 19:25Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 19:25Fortune Feimster?

I don't know more bits, but I don't watch a ton of it.

• 19:33Fortune Feimster?

I remember you did that thing about the no molest art sign.

• 19:37Tig Notaro?

  No molest.

• 19:39Fortune Feimster?

Veleste, yeah. So anytime I would see those signs, that would make me laugh. Obviously, when I see Taylor Dane or hear Taylor Dane's name, that's not observational. I just don't think of you.

• 19:54Tig Notaro?

But again, like, how often do you see Taylor Dane?

• 19:56Fortune Feimster?

  Again, yeah.

• 19:58Tig Notaro?

So you never think of me?

• 20:01Fortune Feimster?

That's why her name comes up every now and then.

• 20:04Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 20:05Fortune Feimster?

And Tom Papa had a funny bit in his last special about how things aren't that bad that people used to wear burlap underpants.

• 20:14Tig Notaro?

He is so funny. He is so perfectly silly and funny. And I just find him to be a delight of a stand up.

• 20:26Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, he's very, very, very good writer as well.

• 20:30Tig Notaro?

Yeah, that's what I mean. It's like, he's so funny, his delivery, his silliness, but like, he's got tight jokes.

• 20:38Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, yeah, for sure.

• 20:39Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 20:40Fortune Feimster?

Well, maybe Evangeline has a good one to share.

• 20:44Tig Notaro?

  Well, she shared that Seinfeld.

• 20:46Fortune Feimster?

  True.

• 20:47Tig Notaro?

  What's the deal's more?

• 20:50Fortune Feimster?

  What is the deal?

• 20:51Tig Notaro?

This isn't like an observational comedian's joke or anything, but I think, and I guess I could write this down and tell it on stage, but I always think two things flying. One, when they say if there's a water landing, it's like, I'm sorry, but there's no water landing. You mean when you crash into the ocean? And then the other thing is when flight attendants, you know, they say, we're primarily here for your safety.

• 21:22Tig Notaro?

And then they're walking around in high heels. It's like, if this goes down, this is our leader in like a skirt and high heels, you know, follow me. So I think about that all the time. But again, that's just my little thoughts.

• 21:38Fortune Feimster?

  Your Tig bits?

• 21:39Tig Notaro?

Yeah, as I barrel through the clouds.

• 21:44Fortune Feimster?

I don't really do observational humor ever, so I don't have any many bits of my own.

• 21:52Tig Notaro?

  You just have rageful, political.

• 21:54Fortune Feimster?

Notice one? Yes, full of rage and political commentary.

• 21:59Tig Notaro?

Yeah. All right, what's we got?

• 22:03Speaker 05

My answer is that Tig used to do a bit about the little sigh people do after they finished laughing. And now I notice it every time that

• 22:17Speaker 05

y'all do it a lot on the podcast. And I'm always wondering if Tig is consciously aware of it the same way that I am. But anyway, thank you guys so much for your podcast. I'm in kind of a hard time right now. And so I've been binging old episodes nonstop, partially to avoid being alone with my thoughts. But your silliness really brightens my day. So thank you. I look forward to your answers.

• 22:38Tig Notaro?

Oh, thank you. And I'm sorry. Yeah, that you're going through a tough time. And please use and abuse our previous episodes.

• 22:47Fortune Feimster?

Our ridiculousness gets us through hard times, too.

• 22:51Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, for sure.

• 22:52Fortune Feimster?

To be able to laugh with our friends.

• 22:55Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, to go.

• 22:59Tig Notaro?

Yeah, the joke is you're reflecting on one second ago.

• 23:06Fortune Feimster?

Remember when we said this one second ago?

• 23:09Tig Notaro?

  That was fun.

• 23:10Fortune Feimster?

That is funny. You are pretty good at the observational stuff. Because I think you're, you're, you're very good.

• 23:18Tig Notaro?

  Thank you.

• 23:18Fortune Feimster?

Your mind, it has questions a lot. I think, I think that's why I don't do more observational things. I, my mind is not thinking of questions.

• 23:28Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 23:29Fortune Feimster?

But you are always like, well, tell me more about that thing. What does that mean?

• 23:33Tig Notaro?

  How did this happen?

• 23:34Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 23:35Tig Notaro?

How do we get here? Who are you? Why are you saying that?

• 23:39Fortune Feimster?

And my, my brain just does not think of those things. I have a friend that jokes with me all the time. It's like, did you ask a follow up question? I'm like, no.

• 23:49Tig Notaro?

You're more of like, wow, they said something weird.

• 23:55Tig Notaro?

  I guess something's on fire.

• 23:56Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 23:59Tig Notaro?
