Handsome. Chat with friends on the Handsome Pod. Chat with friends on the Handsome Pod. Pretty little episode.

• 1:51Tig Notaro?

Hey Fortune. Hey Tig. How are you, girl? So good, girl. It is so good to see you, girl. You too, girl. Oh, my gosh. You had reached out to me the other day. Yeah. For a chit chat. I told you I was leveled. Yes. With the shingles vaccine. I love that you're like, I gotta get to the shingles thing. We could say, welcome to the handsome pods. No, no, I was just remembering. But yes, welcome to the handsome pod, pretty little episode. But tell us, this shingles debacle.

• 2:30Tig Notaro?

I just, anybody listening over 50 that has gotten the shingles vaccine, oh, my Lord. I heard it wasn't pleasant, but I didn't know it was a level that you're saying you got leveled by. I couldn't get out of bed. I couldn't move my body. Yeah. I could not move my body. And it's a vaccine, so you're just getting like a shot, right? Well, I had gotten the first one. Okay. I think it was two months ago. Yeah. And they were like, you know, it affects some people, you know, people differently. Some people it really affects. And it didn't affect me. Okay. And then, and then I went in for the second one. And, and I said, you know, the first one didn't affect me. And I heard that,

• 3:14Tig Notaro?

that it can, you know, really take you down. And she was like, you know, it can, but maybe it won't affect you. And I was like, okay. And she said, it usually kicks in at night or in the morning. Okay. Well, one in the morning, it kicked in. Oh. And I was lying in bed. I had turned over and I was like, oh, God, oh, God. Oh, my God. Fortune, I pride myself on not exaggerating. Yeah. I felt like somebody had beaten me with a bat. Oh, my God. It was bad. It was so bad. I had a fever and my whole body, I had a headache and my whole body, head to toe.

• 3:52Tig Notaro?

I could not move. And I'm so curious if our listeners, anyone had this same experience because it leveled me. It was crazy. I've never had that kind of response from, and what was a good thing was knowing that it wasn't unusual, that I wasn't having some crazy response. Uh, so if anybody ever wondered if I am anti vax, I am not anti vax.

• 4:19Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 4:20Tig Notaro?

Uh, I went in for it and so.

• 4:23Fortune Feimster?

Well, I, as unpleasant as that was, I've heard getting shingles is a nightmare. So.

• 4:30Tig Notaro?

  Yes. Well, that's.

• 4:31Fortune Feimster?

  The vax.

• 4:32Tig Notaro?

Yes. I've had numerous, when I went through this, um, a friend of ours was having a dinner and I was hoping that I was gonna be okay because it was like a really big celebratory dinner.

• 4:45Fortune Feimster?

  Uh huh.

• 4:46Tig Notaro?

And I mean, I could tell Stephanie was like really kind of bummed, like not like upset with me, but like.

• 4:52Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 4:53Tig Notaro?

It was a night out that we were doing. I was like, I can't, I can't move.

• 4:58Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 4:58Tig Notaro?

Uh, but that friend and other friends have told me, they were like, I've had shingles.

• 5:04Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, really?

• 5:05Tig Notaro?

  I guess they're unbelievably horrendous.

• 5:09Fortune Feimster?

  Hmm.

• 5:10Tig Notaro?

So I would like to avoid that.

• 5:11Fortune Feimster?

  Yes.

• 5:12Tig Notaro?

And I'll go through a baseball bat beating from the vaccine any old day.

• 5:17Fortune Feimster?

  Right.

• 5:17Tig Notaro?

Than to have what people have described shingles actually are.

• 5:22Fortune Feimster?

Well, thank God you're on the other side of that.

• 5:24Tig Notaro?

  Thank you, God.

• 5:25Fortune Feimster?

  I'm happy for you.

• 5:26Tig Notaro?

  Yes, thank you. Um.

• 5:28Fortune Feimster?

  You're welcome.

• 5:30Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I just wanted to follow up with that with, cause I had texted you being like, hey, I'm just crawling out of a, a shingles vaccine. It sounds like it would be nothing. Like you just, and I'm, it was not nothing.

• 5:44Fortune Feimster?

I was just calling to chat with you, girl. And I figured, hey, girl, we'll talk another time.

• 5:49Tig Notaro?

I know you were a girl, but, um, I was very interested to catch up with you and chat. Um, but was not gonna happen.

• 5:58Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, that's all right. Well, we'll catch up another time.

• 6:01Tig Notaro?

  Mm hmm.

• 6:02Fortune Feimster?

  Like right now.

• 6:03Tig Notaro?

  We are, we're catching up.

• 6:04Fortune Feimster?

  Listeners.

• 6:05Tig Notaro?

I know. How was your, are you finished shooting in, uh, Atlanta?

• 6:10Fortune Feimster?

Um, yep, done with that. And, uh, that was super fun. And then flew to Vegas right after for a show and the, the month of June was pretty crazy busy, but July and August, I'm taking it a little easier. So I'm, I'm happy to just like slow down for a minute.

• 6:27Tig Notaro?

And what does slow down look like for you?

• 6:30Fortune Feimster?

Um, in July, I just have one busy week and that's it. And then August, I have, um, I go to Iceland for their pride and, uh, for one weekend and one show and that's it.

• 6:43Tig Notaro?

Wow. Well, you tell Iceland, if they want me ever, I would love to go to Iceland.

• 6:49Fortune Feimster?

I'm sure they would love that. I've never been. They reached out about, uh, performing at their pride weekend and I was like, you betcha.

• 6:58Tig Notaro?

Mm hmm. I've only done a layover in, in Iceland.

• 7:02Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, I'm pumped. I've, I've never been. So if anyone has any recommendations, please send them my way. My best friend Andrea is going with me.

• 7:11Tig Notaro?

Is that who we met in Nashville?

• 7:13Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, that's who you met. Yeah.

• 7:15Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, she's nice.

• 7:16Fortune Feimster?

  It's gonna be fun.

• 7:18Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I think they have a hundred percent organic farming in Iceland.

• 7:22Fortune Feimster?

  Really?

• 7:23Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 7:24Fortune Feimster?

  Well, I can't wait.

• 7:25Tig Notaro?

Yes, I can't wait for you.

• 7:27Fortune Feimster?

Well, should we hear some questions?

• 7:29Tig Notaro?

Yeah, let's do it. What if they're all about the shingles vaccine?

• 7:33Fortune Feimster?

  They might be.

• 7:34Tig Notaro?

You know what I also heard? The shingles vaccine can help with, um, dementia and Alzheimer's.

• 7:41Fortune Feimster?

  Okay. Well, that's always helpful.

• 7:43Tig Notaro?

Prevention, obviously, not to get it.

• 7:47Fortune Feimster?

  That would be a bummer.

• 7:51Speaker 04

Hello, pretty little handsoms. I'm Jessica from South Carolina and I'd like to know if there's anything that you were an early adopter of that you love to tell people about. Uh, maybe it was an artist or a show or a band that you got in on the ground floor before it was really popular and you're proud of that.

• 8:11Fortune Feimster?

Hmm. I, I feel like I was an early adopter of Brandy Carlisle.

• 8:17Tig Notaro?

  How early?

• 8:18Fortune Feimster?

Like, like not, not when she was like busking in Seattle, but like.

• 8:25Fortune Feimster?

Pretty early on, like I saw her in LA in like a tiny, tiny venue.

• 8:30Tig Notaro?

  Like what venue?

• 8:31Fortune Feimster?

  Maybe the El Rey, but.

• 8:33Tig Notaro?

  Oh, okay. Yeah.

• 8:34Fortune Feimster?

  But.

• 8:34Tig Notaro?

  That's like a 500.

• 8:35Fortune Feimster?

I mean, I didn't discover like day one, but pretty early days. Pre her song being on Grey's Anatomy.

• 8:43Tig Notaro?

What song was on Grey's Anatomy?

• 8:45Fortune Feimster?

  The Story.

• 8:46Tig Notaro?

Oh, The Story is in the Andrea Gibson documentary that I produced.

• 8:53Fortune Feimster?

  Nice.

• 8:54Tig Notaro?

Yeah, Brandy's also an EP on that.

• 8:57Fortune Feimster?

That's awesome. I also started using Uber's pretty early days when it was only black cars.

• 9:04Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I remember being out with Sarah Silverman and she was like, this is so crazy. This app, it's like a taxi and you just, and a limo pulls up or, you know, whatever. And I was like, oh, that's weird. Anyway, so do you want to go get a?

• 9:18Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 9:20Tig Notaro?

But here I can do it. I'll just press this. And then a car like pulled up and we zipped off to like, get a piece of pie or something at a diner.

• 9:27Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 9:28Tig Notaro?

  But, um, congrats.

• 9:29Fortune Feimster?

  Thank you.

• 9:31Tig Notaro?

Um, yeah, I guess I have those kind of things where it's not like I didn't discover them, but I was seeing them in clubs, you know? And that would be people like the Indigo Girls and.

• 9:47Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 9:48Tig Notaro?

  Um, Edie Birkell.

• 9:50Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 9:51Tig Notaro?

I remember seeing Edie in a club in Houston. I went, I don't know if I went by myself. I think I might've gone with a friend. Um, but I for sure went by myself to Indigo Girls, to the Heights Theater in Houston.

• 10:07Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 10:08Tig Notaro?

It's a 500 seat venue. That's where I shot my Happy to Be Here special. And the Indigo Girls were on that special and that's why I did the full circle thing.

• 10:18Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 10:19Tig Notaro?

So, yeah, there were 500 people there. It wasn't, it wasn't, um, like nobody had heard of them.

• 10:25Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 10:26Tig Notaro?

But, um, I was hired to be the.

• 10:31Tig Notaro?

Well, there was this show on Netflix that got scrapped in the pandemic that I was like a host and judge for with like up and coming comedians where you choose comedians that you there were three hosts and you choose a comedian that you want to develop and help them with their comedy and then down the road they could the big prize is to win a Netflix special. And the comedian I chose was Otsko. And that's how I got to become close with her and I directed her first special, which was crazy because out of all those comedians that were coming on that that series.

• 11:14Tig Notaro?

She did end up getting her own special, but just not through Netflix because Netflix scrapped the show.

• 11:21Tig Notaro?

So that was early, you know, it was like this, this gal's got what it takes.

• 11:27Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I don't know, maybe Otsko, Indigo Girls and Idi Raquel. Yeah, little bit early. I love it. Do you? I sure do. Shall we hear if our friend here had any?

• 11:42Speaker 04

  Jessica.

• 11:42Tig Notaro?

Jessica, what did Jessica adopt early on? What if it was children? Might be.

• 11:53Speaker 04

I have a few. I saw Paramore perform in a little bar when Hailey was just a teenager and I was blown away by her talent. I like to imagine that I discovered Brad Pitt when I was 11. That one's just not true. And I love to tell people that I have been a Tig Notaro fan forever. I used to watch her on Comedy Central. My first ever podcast was Professor Blastoff. And of course, I'm a day one handsome listener.

• 12:29Speaker 04

Thank you all three and Thomas for being so special and silly and bringing joy into our lives. It really means a lot.

• 12:42Tig Notaro?

  Love you.

• 12:43Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, that's sweet.

• 12:44Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's nice. Like you, it's nice when people really feel it and get it. And, um, and, um, yeah, that's, that's really nice. And God, I was podcasting a long time ago.

• 13:03Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, you were, you were an early adopter.

• 13:05Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 13:06Fortune Feimster?

  Of that.

• 13:07Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I guess that's true. I was an early adopter of podcasting. But even people, God, Jimmy Pardo, I feel like he's such, first of all, a great comedian and such a great podcaster. That guy was like born podcasting.

• 13:22Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 13:23Tig Notaro?

So I can't even pretend like I was before him, but, um, but yeah. Anyway, interesting and good question. Thanks for calling in.

• 13:39Speaker 05

Hello, Fortune, Tig and May. This is Grace in Minnesota. Um, my question for you is if you had to go right now and get a tattoo, for some reason you're being forced to do it. Um, what would you get and why?

• 13:55Tig Notaro?

Oh, man. I'd get a hot dog and a hot dog bun on the end of my nose.

• 14:00Fortune Feimster?

  Would not.

• 14:04Tig Notaro?

  What would you get?

• 14:05Fortune Feimster?

  Do you have a?

• 14:06Tig Notaro?

Hot dog? Do you have a tattoo? I don't think you do.

• 14:09Fortune Feimster?

Not a single one, do you?

• 14:10Tig Notaro?

No, I'm not a tattoo gal.

• 14:13Fortune Feimster?

I just never wanted one. My, my skin is so like light colored that I just didn't feel like a tattoo would look good on it. And I'm not really one for pain, so I never wanted to inflict pain on myself on purpose. And it just looks very painful.

• 14:33Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 14:34Fortune Feimster?

Um, I mean, for acting purposes, the people that have tattoos.

• 14:39Fortune Feimster?

Have to go through so much to get them covered that I don't know why they would want to deal with that.

• 14:45Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 14:46Fortune Feimster?

Um, but yeah, I don't mind tattoos on other people. I just have never had one myself.

• 14:52Tig Notaro?

Yeah, same. Uh, like I feel very much like you do you.

• 14:59Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 14:59Tig Notaro?

  I'm gonna do me.

• 15:01Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 15:02Tig Notaro?

Well, you know what? I think I've talked about this. I do have a tattoo.

• 15:06Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, yeah?

• 15:07Tig Notaro?

  It's just a dot.

• 15:08Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, that's right.

• 15:09Tig Notaro?

Yeah, my brother threw a ballpoint pen at me and it stuck in the inside of my right knee. And when he pulled it out, I was in sixth grade, still there if I ever am missing. And the police ask if I had any tattoos. I did have a dot on the inside.

• 15:25Fortune Feimster?

I have my brother's fingernail mark in the, right here in between my eyebrows.

• 15:32Tig Notaro?

You know, there was a moment when I was, uh, in high school.

• 15:37Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 15:37Tig Notaro?

That I thought I might want Chrissy Heinz face on my upper arm.

• 15:43Fortune Feimster?

What would you think about that now?

• 15:45Tig Notaro?

I know. I remember I was really close with my vice principal because I was always in her office. Trouble. But I told her, I was like, yeah, I want to get Chrissy Heinz face. And she was like, that you're not gonna want that when you're.

• 16:03Tig Notaro?

You're not gonna want that on your.

• 16:05Fortune Feimster?

Thank God she told you that.

• 16:07Tig Notaro?

Uh, and I, you know, for a while I, and I sat with it because I really respected her.

• 16:13Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 16:13Tig Notaro?

Not enough to, you know, go to school or not smoke at school, but.

• 16:19Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 16:19Tig Notaro?

Um, I did. I took it to heart, what she said, and, and I sat on it and thought about it. And as the years went by, it did drift away as like a good idea. But you know, actually, speaking of high school, I was asked to go to prom with a, a very, a guy that became famous in the tattoo world.

• 16:42Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, yeah?

• 16:43Tig Notaro?

I said no, because I'd already dropped out of high school and I didn't know I was gay yet. But I was like, I'm not going to. I was like, I'll be at the pool hall if you want to meet me there.

• 16:51Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 16:52Tig Notaro?

Which he did. He missed his. His prom to come shoot pool with me.

• 16:57Fortune Feimster?

  Oh.

• 16:57Tig Notaro?

But he was known as Leopard Larry. And I think he's in the Book of World Records or like Ripley's Believe It or Not.

• 17:06Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 17:07Tig Notaro?

Um, he had his entire body tattooed like a leopard.

• 17:11Fortune Feimster?

  Whoa.

• 17:12Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Very sadly, he passed away probably four years ago or something. But, um, but yeah, I was asked to prom with my, his name was Larry Brishki.

• 17:25Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. But he didn't have all, he didn't have all those tattoos when he asked you to prom, did he?

• 17:30Tig Notaro?

No, the way I met, I had failed, um, I had failed a grade in school and I was, and I had been befriended by the very popular girls in school. And I was sitting with them and I enjoyed them, but then I was like, man, this isn't really my scene. And, um, and I was like, I'm going to go sit at that table. And it was just like a table of nerds.

• 17:53Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 17:53Tig Notaro?

And, um, and two of the popular girls came with me to sit there and one of the guys there was Larry Brishki. And I loved Larry so much and, uh, we just totally became pals. And he was like the smartest nerdiest guy.

• 18:09Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 18:09Tig Notaro?

And then I think as he got older, he kind of rebelled. He became a total partier. And then got his whole body tat, tatted up as a leopard. And, um,

• 18:19Fortune Feimster?

  Wow.

• 18:20Tig Notaro?

  But yeah.

• 18:21Fortune Feimster?

I just think about the pain of that though.

• 18:24Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Well, I think he maybe probably had some, you know, drinks or something in his system. Here and there.

• 18:34Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 18:34Tig Notaro?

Over the years that maybe dulled pain.

• 18:36Fortune Feimster?

  I see.

• 18:37Tig Notaro?

But, um, but yeah, no, he went from like big glasses nerd.

• 18:42Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 18:42Tig Notaro?

  To like Leopard Larry.

• 18:45Fortune Feimster?

  Leopard Larry.

• 18:47Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Shout out to Leopard Larry Brishki. Can I just tell you really fast? A quick Larry Brishki's story.

• 18:54Fortune Feimster?

  Please.

• 18:55Tig Notaro?

Told it on here. We went out to go fishing. At this lake, Lake Conroe in Texas.

• 19:05Tig Notaro?

And we bought one of those inflatable alligator rafts.

• 19:10Fortune Feimster?

  Uh huh.

• 19:10Tig Notaro?

  You know those?

• 19:11Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 19:11Tig Notaro?

They have like handles on them.

• 19:12Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 19:14Tig Notaro?

We thought it would be so funny to inflate the alligator raft with our fish and take our fishing poles, sit on the alligator raft and like push ourself out to the middle of the lake and fish from the alligator.

• 19:28Fortune Feimster?

  Oh my god.

• 19:29Tig Notaro?

And as soon as the first line was cast,

• 19:34Tig Notaro?

it took you down? We caught our alligator. And it popped.

• 19:38Fortune Feimster?

  Oh my god.

• 19:39Tig Notaro?

And we were in the middle of the lake laughing so hard, having to swim back to shore with this deflated alligator raft and our fishing poles.

• 19:51Fortune Feimster?

  Hook a wary tig.

• 19:52Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it was just like a stupid idea that we thought would be so funny. And we actually did it.

• 19:58Fortune Feimster?

I can't believe you hooked the inflatable alligator on the first go.

• 20:02Tig Notaro?

I feel like it was Larry that did that. I was a really good fisherman. Anyway, sorry, I got caught in Leopard Larry land.

• 20:11Fortune Feimster?

Listen, shout out Leopard Larry and rest in peace, my friend.

• 20:15Tig Notaro?

  Rest in peace, Leopard Larry.

• 20:17Fortune Feimster?

Oh, we gotta hear Grace's answer.

• 20:19Tig Notaro?

Oh, right, right. Sorry, Grace, I really, really went off on Leopard Larry there.

• 20:25Speaker 05

And my answer for this is that I would get a tattoo symbolizing my, my true love, um, my cat, Sonny. Uh, sorry to my husband, who is probably finding out for the first time that he is not my true love. Um, I don't know exactly what it would be, um, but some image of my sweet, sweet, uh, feline friend. Thank you so much.

• 20:52Fortune Feimster?

I just realized we didn't even answer what we would get.

• 21:00Fortune Feimster?

Um, well, okay, so neither Tig and I have one, but it, I, you know, I like that she, she would have that, but I, I, it made me think I would get Biggie on me somewhere, but I don't think I want Biggie tattooed, like the word Biggie, because then it feels like I'm calling myself.

• 21:20Tig Notaro?

  What about his face?

Maybe his face, but I would probably get like some kind of, like my friend Jillian has like cool like numbers or like birth, like her, the year she was born. I would do like some kind of like, something like a number or some sentimental thing like that. Like my favorite number is 18, maybe that, or my birth year. Something small and something that you can't really see.

Why not on the bottom of your foot?

• 21:49Fortune Feimster?

Or like a, on my pinky toe.

• 21:52Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 21:53Fortune Feimster?

Um, yeah. What would you get?

• 21:56Tig Notaro?

I'd probably get something sentimental that, um, kind of symbolized me and Stephanie and Max and Finn and Kitty City.

• 22:06Fortune Feimster?

  Oh.

• 22:07Tig Notaro?

I, we were drawing the other day and I drew a picture of all four of us with Kitty City.

• 22:14Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 22:14Tig Notaro?

Um, in this nice little nature scene. And not that I'd get that, maybe I'd get that on my back.

• 22:23Fortune Feimster?

On the back? Just a giant?

• 22:25Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Just that exact drawing of mine on my back.

• 22:31Fortune Feimster?

  Uh, well, there you go.

• 22:32Tig Notaro?

  There you go.

• 22:34Fortune Feimster?

I don't think either one of us are gonna ever do that, but you never know.

• 22:37Tig Notaro?

  I don't think we are.

• 22:38Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 22:39Tig Notaro?

I don't think, or maybe me, you and May can all get, um, Thomas's face on the, on our backs.

• 22:46Fortune Feimster?

Or handsome. The word handsome, that would mind that.

• 22:50Tig Notaro?

Thomas's face on our back and then over it handsome.

• 22:54Fortune Feimster?

  Handsome, that's quite a tattoo.

• 22:55Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 22:56Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah. I love it.

• 22:58Tig Notaro?

  Thomas seems thrilled about it.

• 23:00Fortune Feimster?

Grace, thank you for the lovely question.

• 23:03Tig Notaro?

Yes, Grace, thank you. And thank you for being patient with my Leopard Larry stories.

• 23:09Tig Notaro?

Let's see, what do you have going on coming up?

• 23:12Fortune Feimster?

I'm just in Edmonton, July 20th with Mateo Lane, if any Canadians want to come. Or May and I are doing the gala in Montreal on the 26th and a bunch of dates coming up in the fall.

• 23:25Tig Notaro?

Well, I will be at the West Hampton Beach Performing Arts Center in West Hampton Beach, New York on August 17th, Provincetown, Massachusetts on August 23rd. And go to tignotaro.com for all my show information. I'm working on new material that I'm very excited about and usually doing that somewhere between LA and Toronto when I go back to film. So come check it out. And I don't know, until next time.

• 24:00Fortune Feimster?
