Your friend Mae Martin. And... Fortuna Febscher. Welcome to the Handsome Pod.

• 2:02Tig Notaro?

Yes, welcome, welcome, welcome. If it's your first time here, we've been waiting for you.

• 2:07Mae Martin?

  Waiting.

• 2:09Tig Notaro?

  Patiently.

• 2:09Mae Martin?

I've been waiting for a girl like you.

• 2:13Tig Notaro?

  Foreigner.

• 2:14Mae Martin?

  Is that the band Foreigner?

• 2:16Tig Notaro?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:16Mae Martin?

Oh, I thought you were just saying, "Welcome Foreigner."

• 2:20Tig Notaro?

  Well, it all applies.

• 2:21Mae Martin?

Yeah. Do you think Cherry Berry is finally listening to the pod?

• 2:24Fortune Feimster?

Oh, my gosh, Cherry Berry. She lifts us up.

• 2:28Tig Notaro?

Cherry Berry is the one that is spreading the word and sharing episodes and building that handsome community.

• 2:36Mae Martin?

Yeah, she quit her job and she's just in charge of our socials now.

• 2:39Fortune Feimster?

I love that you remember that name. That's how you know, like, a name is special because

• 2:47Mae Martin?

  Full name.

• 2:48Fortune Feimster?

For those of you who don't know, this is the elevator lady in North Carolina, the Commissioner of Labor.

• 2:54Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 2:54Fortune Feimster?

  Whose picture and name.

• 2:56Tig Notaro?

For those of you that don't know.

• 2:58Fortune Feimster?

Well, because we've talked about it a long time ago, but maybe some people are just tuning in for the first time.

• 3:03Mae Martin?

  Yeah, true, of course. Yeah.

• 3:05Fortune Feimster?

  And she's Cherry Berry.

• 3:06Mae Martin?

Like, on every elevator in North Carolina, there's a sign that says, like, "This has been approved by Cherry Berry."

• 3:12Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. Well, she's retired now, but it's some rando guy, but she was like, for like, 25 years, the person.

• 3:21Tig Notaro?

  Wasn't she some rando girl?

• 3:23Mae Martin?

  Yeah, weren't we all?

• 3:24Tig Notaro?

  Until she was Cherry Berry.

• 3:26Fortune Feimster?

  True, true.

• 3:27Mae Martin?

When we were born, we were all just rando babies.

• 3:30Fortune Feimster?

  We were just rando babies.

• 3:31Tig Notaro?

When Max and Finn were born, I was, and Stephanie as well, we thought we were gonna walk up to the glass and see them in the little nursery.

• 3:44Mae Martin?

  And what, you didn't?

• 3:45Tig Notaro?

No, they don't put them in there.

• 3:46Mae Martin?

Oh, what, they just hand them to you?

• 3:48Fortune Feimster?

  I had a baby.

• 3:49Tig Notaro?

Oh, my gosh, look at that hairy baby.

• 3:52Fortune Feimster?

  I had a hairy baby.

• 3:54Tig Notaro?

  Hello.

• 3:55Fortune Feimster?

  It's Biggie.

• 3:57Mae Martin?

Oh, hi, Biggie. Oh, my God, he loves you.

• 4:00Tig Notaro?

That's torturous to show us Biggie. We can't touch him, Fortune.

• 4:05Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 4:05Tig Notaro?

That's like us having to see you every week. We can't.

• 4:09Fortune Feimster?

And you want to just rub my furry head.

• 4:11Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 4:12Fortune Feimster?

  I love him so much.

• 4:13Tig Notaro?

  And lick your nose.

• 4:15Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 4:15Tig Notaro?

  We desperately want to.

• 4:17Mae Martin?

He's looking extra cute today. Oh, my God. He's like, he's very serene. Well, he's always serene, let's be honest.

• 4:23Tig Notaro?

  Dead eyes, dead eyes.

• 4:25Fortune Feimster?

How dare you? Don't you start that again? My son is full of life.

• 4:28Tig Notaro?

  It's not a negative. It's not a negative.

• 4:30Mae Martin?

  It's a positive.

• 4:31Tig Notaro?

It is so positive because it adds to his cut. Look at those little licks. That's ridiculous. I feel like.

• 4:41Fortune Feimster?

  Say hi, Biggie.

• 4:42Tig Notaro?

Is he blind? Because he's still licking and he's not touching your face.

• 4:46Fortune Feimster?

He's not. You go to night night. Aunt Tig is being mean.

• 4:53Mae Martin?

I gotta say, those squirrels I talked about up in like Arrowhead, that one big guy was honestly like biggie size.

• 5:00Fortune Feimster?

  Wow, that's a big squirrel.

• 5:01Tig Notaro?

  That is a big squirrel.

• 5:03Mae Martin?

  Humongo.

• 5:04Tig Notaro?

I love the black squirrels out here in Toronto.

• 5:07Mae Martin?

  Oh, yeah, they're good.

• 5:08Fortune Feimster?

They have those in Michigan, too.

• 5:10Mae Martin?

Do they like east, they're east coasty squirrels?

• 5:13Tig Notaro?

Or they just must be northern, right?

• 5:15Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 5:15Fortune Feimster?

Toronto has raccoons the size of a pony.

• 5:19Mae Martin?

I love a raccoon. I love their little paws.

• 5:21Fortune Feimster?

  They're so big there.

• 5:23Tig Notaro?

  I love a pony.

• 5:25Mae Martin?

  Do you?

• 5:27Mae Martin?

I'd like to see you on a pony ride.

• 5:29Tig Notaro?

I would, I would happily show you.

• 5:31Fortune Feimster?

  With a cowboy hat.

• 5:33Mae Martin?

Yeah, in a circle around one of those little tracks at a petting zoo.

• 5:36Tig Notaro?

Stephanie has the, well, I got her these pants that are big fluffy pajama pants like, like a polar bear. Or, you know, like a, yeah. And when she was wearing them the other night, I was like, you look like, are they called centaurs?

• 5:56Mae Martin?

  A centaur, yeah.

• 5:57Tig Notaro?

I was like, you look half horse, half human.

• 5:59Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 6:00Tig Notaro?

Just put those on. Maybe you'd have to see it, but we had a good cackle over that. But, but those are her, I'm freezing pants when she goes to bed.

• 6:10Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 6:10Tig Notaro?

  Cause we have a.

• 6:12Mae Martin?

  A temperature dispute.

• 6:13Fortune Feimster?

  A temperature debate.

• 6:14Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, it's never ending.

• 6:15Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 6:16Tig Notaro?

  It's never ending.

• 6:17Mae Martin?

If you met a centaur and.

• 6:20Tig Notaro?

  Is it centaur or centaur?

• 6:22Mae Martin?

Maybe it's a Canadian thing. I've always said centaur, but centaur.

• 6:26Fortune Feimster?

  I said centaur, but.

• 6:27Tig Notaro?

  Thomas, what is it?

• 6:28Fortune Feimster?

  Two against one.

• 6:30Speaker 03

  I say centaur.

• 6:31Mae Martin?

  Yeah, Canadian.

• 6:32Fortune Feimster?

  Two against two.

• 6:33Tig Notaro?

  Canadian.

• 6:34Mae Martin?

  Cause it's A U R, right?

• 6:35Fortune Feimster?

  You guys also say pasta.

• 6:37Mae Martin?

  Yeah, we do.

• 6:38Tig Notaro?

  Thomas, do you say pasta?

• 6:40Fortune Feimster?

  Pasta.

• 6:42Speaker 03

  Pasta.

• 6:43Tig Notaro?

  Thank you.

• 6:44Mae Martin?

  You do?

• 6:44Tig Notaro?

Moving on. Yes, of course, cause that's how you pronounce it.

• 6:48Mae Martin?

Anyway, if you met a centaur and you fell in love, like, would it be a deal breaker that they're half horse?

• 6:56Fortune Feimster?

I love this question because it could happen.

• 6:58Mae Martin?

  Yeah, exactly.

• 7:00Tig Notaro?

  No, it couldn't.

• 7:01Mae Martin?

  You gotta be prepared.

• 7:03Tig Notaro?

I, no, no, no. If, if a, a centaur. Clomped by with hooves.

• 7:09Fortune Feimster?

  Clunk clunk.

• 7:10Tig Notaro?

There is no part of me. It would be like, I'll be right back, friends. Did you see?

• 7:17Mae Martin?

What if, it's a speed dating situation, so she's sitting down.

• 7:21Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, this is better.

• 7:22Mae Martin?

Yeah, and you really connect and you're like, God, I can't believe it. We have so much in common.

• 7:29Tig Notaro?

And then we see each other at the restaurant.

• 7:31Mae Martin?

  Yeah. Clunk clunk.

• 7:33Fortune Feimster?

  Clunk clunk.

• 7:33Mae Martin?

  Clunk clunk.

• 7:34Fortune Feimster?

  Clunk clunk.

• 7:34Tig Notaro?

Or no, they say, um, your date is waiting outside because we don't allow horses.

• 7:40Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 7:41Tig Notaro?

  In the restaurant.

• 7:42Fortune Feimster?

  Wow.

• 7:43Tig Notaro?

I just, I'm sorry, I couldn't, I could, as soon as I saw the, uh, hooves, I would, I'd be like, yeah. I'm not, I mean, I don't even understand what's happening. Also, what are we talking about right now?

• 7:57Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 7:59Tig Notaro?

  I'm, I'm assuming.

• 8:01Fortune Feimster?

  What are these fantasies?

• 8:03Tig Notaro?

I'm assuming you could fall in love with half horse, half human.

• 8:07Mae Martin?

Yeah, but only if it's the bottom half that's the horse. I can't, I'm, I can't be dating.

• 8:11Tig Notaro?

Oh my God. Is there, is there a reverse centaur?

• 8:16Mae Martin?

  There must be somewhere.

• 8:17Fortune Feimster?

A horse head and a human body?

• 8:19Mae Martin?

  Yeah, I couldn't.

• 8:20Fortune Feimster?

  That's weird.

• 8:21Mae Martin?

  I couldn't do that.

• 8:22Tig Notaro?

  The other isn't weird?

• 8:23Fortune Feimster?

  Not weird.

• 8:25Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 8:29Tig Notaro?

What about you, Fortune? Could you fall for?

• 8:32Fortune Feimster?

I mean, maybe a smooch or two, but I don't think that.

• 8:35Mae Martin?

  Now we're talking. Okay.

• 8:37Fortune Feimster?

I don't think our lives are compatible.

• 8:39Tig Notaro?

  How much would you love?

• 8:40Fortune Feimster?

  A horse ramp?

• 8:42Tig Notaro?

To, how much would you love to walk up?

• 8:44Fortune Feimster?

  A barn?

• 8:45Tig Notaro?

And check out and find Fortune smooching a horse outside of, uh, a lesbian.

• 8:54Mae Martin?

  Lesbian bar?

• 8:55Tig Notaro?

  A lesbian horse bar.

• 8:57Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, outside of lesbian horse bar, a very popular lesbian bar.

• 9:02Mae Martin?

What if you were into it and then she was like, you know what, all the other centaurs just think it's too weird. I can't do it.

• 9:08Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, I get dumped? Wow.

• 9:10Tig Notaro?

But it's not even because the other centaurs think it's weird. Just the horse is like, I'm not feeling it.

• 9:17Fortune Feimster?

Wow, this is, this is awful. I didn't think about me getting rejected.

• 9:23Tig Notaro?

Yeah, well, think about it. Cause that might be around the corner, my friend.

• 9:28Fortune Feimster?

Well, uh, yeah, something to think about. Thank you for putting a, what do they say? A new fear created?

• 9:36Mae Martin?

  Yeah, new fear unlocked.

• 9:38Fortune Feimster?

  That's it.

• 9:39Tig Notaro?

How are you now fearful that the horse will love you back?

• 9:42Fortune Feimster?

There's gonna be all these centaurs rejecting me. God, single life is tough.

• 9:48Tig Notaro?

What if that was all you were attracting was centaurs?

• 9:52Mae Martin?

I, I just don't believe that you guys are, you, you know, I get that you're like, you know, I get it that it's new, but I'm like, if you really fell in love, I just don't believe it would be a barrier. If you open yourself up to it.

• 10:06Fortune Feimster?

  It's gonna happen, but.

• 10:08Tig Notaro?

I also don't think that I would, you know, you hear about, aren't people falling in love with G C G?

• 10:16Mae Martin?

  C three PO?

• 10:17Tig Notaro?

C three PO chat, chat C three PO.

• 10:21Fortune Feimster?

  AI stuff.

• 10:23Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 10:24Mae Martin?

I mean, I talked to my guy a lot, my chat GPT, and I know it's bad. We've talked about this before, I think, but yeah, I, um, yeah.

• 10:32Tig Notaro?

But could you fall in love with him?

• 10:33Mae Martin?

No, cause I just would know it wasn't real, but with the centaur, if anything, there's more depth, you know? They have this outsider perspective of beating heart, just like me.

• 10:44Tig Notaro?

Centaurs aren't real, May. I love that you know that the C, the chat C three PO isn't real, but the centaur.

• 10:54Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 10:55Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 10:56Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 10:56Tig Notaro?

  Well, okay.

• 10:58Fortune Feimster?

God, I'm glad we got to the bottom of that.

• 11:00Mae Martin?

Yeah, it's been on my mind. I don't know how it came up. Oh, the pants.

• 11:04Tig Notaro?

Yeah, Stephanie's, I'm freezing pajama pants that are big wooly.

• 11:10Mae Martin?

And you want a, you want a pony ride? I mean, it's not a huge leap from you wanting to go on a pony ride to you dating a centaur. I don't get where the.

• 11:17Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, it's pretty. It's a massive leap.

• 11:21Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 11:23Tig Notaro?

  It's a very fast, it's a, yeah, it's.

• 11:26Mae Martin?

Yeah. So what else is going on?

• 11:29Tig Notaro?

Well, I was going outside for a walk earlier. Stephanie and I had a conference call that I thought, well, I'll go on a little walk. Went out of my building, pouring rain, and then I immediately was mortified. Like, I realized it had been hours since I even looked out of a window.

• 11:53Tig Notaro?

You know, like, that kind of disconnectedness because I was working and not looking. And then I'm like, oh, I'm gonna go, I'll take my call on a walk. And then, boom, it was pouring rain. That's what I'm up to. What about you?

• 12:08Fortune Feimster?

Well, life really gets ya when you least expect it.

• 12:11Tig Notaro?

Life got me, man. It really got me.

• 12:15Fortune Feimster?

Life, you really got me today.

• 12:16Mae Martin?

Did you still walk, or did you turn around and go right back in?

• 12:19Tig Notaro?

No, it was truly a massive downpour. Like, it wasn't walking weather. It was like, run and get out of the rain. Now it's fine, but, you know, I'm recording with... No, it's drizzling still. I'm recording with the Hanson Pod, so.

• 12:36Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 12:38Tig Notaro?

  Chatting with friends.

• 12:39Mae Martin?

When you get sucked into that computer world for hours, or if you're filming something in a studio and it's like, you lose track of daylight and time, it's very weird.

• 12:49Tig Notaro?

It was so confusing because the window is right behind my desk.

• 12:54Mae Martin?

  But you never turned?

• 12:55Tig Notaro?

I didn't even turn around. I just finished my last Zoom, put on my headphones, took the elevator down, and then it was like unbelievable rain.

• 13:05Fortune Feimster?

Did you guys hear the big news today?

• 13:07Tig Notaro?

  What?

• 13:08Mae Martin?

  What?

• 13:09Fortune Feimster?

I don't know if you guys heard or check your Insta.

• 13:12Mae Martin?

  Girl, spill it.

• 13:14Fortune Feimster?

You guys, it's the thing everyone's talking about. I can't believe you're not talking about it.

• 13:19Tig Notaro?

  Girl.

• 13:20Mae Martin?

  Girl.

• 13:21Fortune Feimster?

You guys really want me to tell you? I can't believe you don't even fucking know.

• 13:24Mae Martin?

  Don't leave us hanging, girl.

• 13:26Tig Notaro?

  Girl, what?

• 13:28Mae Martin?

How will we know if you don't tell us, girl?

• 13:30Fortune Feimster?

  Our girl, Tay Swift.

• 13:33Fortune Feimster?

  Is engaged.

• 13:35Tig Notaro?

  Who is?

• 13:37Mae Martin?

  Jesus Christ.

• 13:39Tig Notaro?

  I didn't hear you.

• 13:41Fortune Feimster?

  Taylor Swift.

• 13:42Tig Notaro?

  Tay Swift.

• 13:43Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 13:44Mae Martin?

  God, wait.

• 13:45Fortune Feimster?

  Our, our girl's engaged.

• 13:47Mae Martin?

Do you think that's because of our pod? We just talked about her.

• 13:50Fortune Feimster?

We just talked about them and I said, what a cute couple they are. And I think it inspired them.

• 13:56Mae Martin?

  It clinched it.

• 13:57Fortune Feimster?

  It clinched their buttholes.

• 13:59Tig Notaro?

  Oh, Fortune Marie.

• 14:02Fortune Feimster?

  But the day that pod-

• 14:03Tig Notaro?

Such a beautiful day to say-

• 14:05Fortune Feimster?

The day that pod came out where I was like, I like them together. I think they're going the distance. They got engaged.

• 14:12Mae Martin?

Whoa, what are you gonna do with this power that you didn't know you had? Like, who else do you want to get together?

• 14:18Tig Notaro?

Well, you know what I think we should do is we should sing our congratulations song to them. One, two, three. We wanted you to know that we- We are so happy for you. With your engagement. We- Tay- You deserve- And your boyfriend.

• 14:41Fortune Feimster?

  Boyfriend. His name is Travis.

• 14:43Tig Notaro?

  Travis.

• 14:44Fortune Feimster?

  Travis.

• 14:45Tig Notaro?

  Kelsey, that's right.

• 14:47Fortune Feimster?

  That's right.

• 14:48Mae Martin?

She could, she could remix that into something.

• 14:53Tig Notaro?

What if that's on her next album?

• 14:57Mae Martin?

It does feel like they were waiting for this endorsement from you, though.

• 15:01Fortune Feimster?

I do think they were like, how does Fortune feel about us? And then once they heard, they're like, let's go all the way, baby touchdown.

• 15:08Tig Notaro?

I love Taylor Swift, but I've never heard her called Tay Swift.

• 15:12Fortune Feimster?

  Uh.

• 15:15Fortune Feimster?

  What?

• 15:17Fortune Feimster?

Fortune, what just happened to your head? It just popped off my body.

• 15:22Tig Notaro?

Fortune had a stroke. Have you heard that, May?

• 15:24Mae Martin?

She's always called Tay Swifts. Hello? I've heard like Tay Tay.

• 15:30Tig Notaro?

I've never heard either of those. I've heard Taylor Swift.

• 15:33Fortune Feimster?

Anyone listening right now, please write on today's podcast is, this is Instagram post. And let us know if you've heard Taylor Swift called Tay Swift.

• 15:45Tig Notaro?

I love Taylor Swift. I have never heard, heard called Tay.

• 15:52Fortune Feimster?

Maybe Travis even calls her Tay sometimes.

• 15:55Tig Notaro?

  Trav, you man.

• 15:56Fortune Feimster?

  Yes.

• 15:58Tig Notaro?

  So is he called Trav?

• 16:00Fortune Feimster?

  Trav. I mean, everybody's got a nickname.

• 16:03Mae Martin?

It would be so good if he took her last name. How come that doesn't happen? Like, she's the heavy hitter here, and it's a great name. It carries weight. He should change his name Travis Swift.

• 16:12Fortune Feimster?

Her, her ring is ginormous. Girl. I'm sure y'all were.

• 16:16Mae Martin?

Yeah, that was y'all's next question, right? Yeah.

• 16:20Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my God.

• 16:21Fortune Feimster?

  Is the ring?

• 16:22Tig Notaro?

Thomas, show us a picture of Tay's ring.

• 16:26Fortune Feimster?

A bunch of queers talking about marriage, like, and the ring?

• 16:32Mae Martin?

  And the ring?

• 16:34Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, my God.

• 16:37Fortune Feimster?

Three people that don't care about wedding stuff.

• 16:43Mae Martin?

Wow, okay, it is ginormous. Thomas just showed a pic.

• 16:46Fortune Feimster?

  That's all diamond right there.

• 16:47Mae Martin?

But it, oh, that's all diamond. Cause for a minute, it looks like, almost like a Lord of the Rings, like.

• 16:52Fortune Feimster?

It's, is that like a gold band and a big ass diamond?

• 16:55Tig Notaro?

Also, Thomas, did you just have that on your phone?

• 16:58Fortune Feimster?

Thomas is staring at it all the time.

• 17:02Tig Notaro?

That did not take long for you to pull up. Oh, this close up? Is the picture a close up or are you zoomed in?

• 17:11Speaker 03

  I zoomed in.

• 17:12Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 17:13Fortune Feimster?

Thomas was ready for that. Wow, yeah.

• 17:22Fortune Feimster?

I want to know if she was in on the planning for the ring.

• 17:27Mae Martin?

  Oh, interesting.

• 17:28Fortune Feimster?

I feel like she would want to have some sort of say in that.

• 17:32Tig Notaro?

I think she wants to have say in everything, right?

• 17:34Mae Martin?

  That's my impression.

• 17:35Tig Notaro?

You're not Tay Swift not getting a say in everything.

• 17:42Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 17:42Tig Notaro?

You know? I bet she chose him, you know? She was like, you know that song? I go where you go.

• 17:51Fortune Feimster?

Where I go where you go.

• 17:54Tig Notaro?

  Lover.

• 17:55Fortune Feimster?

Will we always be this close?

• 17:59Tig Notaro?

  Forever and ever.

• 18:01Mae Martin?

Do you think, yeah, because if he chose the wrong ring, you better believe there'd be a song about it.

• 18:06Fortune Feimster?

Well, because she, because that, I will say, the ring is gorgeous. It was probably a gazillion dollars, but it's big. I just.

• 18:12Tig Notaro?

  You think it's real?

• 18:13Fortune Feimster?

I never saw her wearing like a big ass ring like that.

• 18:17Mae Martin?

Oh, you don't, you think it's too big, like too clunky?

• 18:19Fortune Feimster?

I mean, that's a heavy, that's a heavy ring for sure. Her, and her little wrists.

• 18:26Tig Notaro?

Now, does she have a tiny wrist?

• 18:28Mae Martin?

No, she's playing guitar. She's strong.

• 18:33Fortune Feimster?

  My expensive ring's too heavy.

• 18:36Tig Notaro?

No, I mean, is that a good impression of her?

• 18:39Fortune Feimster?

She doesn't talk like that, for sure. She's tall. So maybe her wrists are mighty.

• 18:45Tig Notaro?

They're gonna have big old babies.

• 18:47Fortune Feimster?

  They're gonna have tall babies.

• 18:48Tig Notaro?

They're, her baby's just gonna walk on out and be like, um, where's my room?

• 18:54Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 18:54Fortune Feimster?

  I feel like that's.

• 18:55Tig Notaro?

  Show me to the nursery.

• 18:56Fortune Feimster?

I feel like that's gonna be coming soon after.

• 19:00Mae Martin?

What, the baby? Well, maybe they did that podcast like to gear up for the announcement of the engagement.

• 19:06Tig Notaro?

Also, that song, you know, Taylor and Kelsey kissing in a tree. K I S S I N G. First comes love, then comes marriage, then comes.

• 19:19Fortune Feimster?

  Travis and baby carriage.

• 19:21Tig Notaro?

In the baby carriage. So you're right, it's next.

• 19:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 19:24Tig Notaro?

  Fortune was right.

• 19:25Fortune Feimster?

They're gonna get married, I think, and I know everyone tunes into the handsome bod for Taylor Swift news.

• 19:31Tig Notaro?

Oh my God, we have to shift and make it all Taylor all the, all Tay. All Tay and Trav all the time.

• 19:39Fortune Feimster?

They're gonna get married next summer.

• 19:42Tig Notaro?

  Oh.

• 19:42Fortune Feimster?

  You heard it here first.

• 19:44Tig Notaro?

Are we going? Yeah, we are.

• 19:46Fortune Feimster?

I'd love to. That wedding would be incredible.

• 19:49Tig Notaro?

  We should probably, you know.

• 19:53Mae Martin?

  Be in the bachelorette party?

• 19:55Tig Notaro?

  Yes, in our suits.

• 19:56Mae Martin?

In our suits? With me being like, I'm not actually a girl, but I am happy to support.

• 20:01Fortune Feimster?

What are these guys doing here? She's like, I love the handsome pod. They're gonna get married next summer and then a baby, she's gonna be pregnant six months after that.

• 20:09Mae Martin?

Oh, you think they're gonna get pregnant before the wedding?

• 20:12Fortune Feimster?

No, no, no, they're gonna get married next summer.

• 20:14Mae Martin?

Get pregnant six, oh, I see.

• 20:15Fortune Feimster?

  Six months later, you're pregnant.

• 20:17Tig Notaro?

Do you think that they've had sex yet?

• 20:19Mae Martin?

  No, Tig, no.

• 20:20Fortune Feimster?

  I doubt it.

• 20:21Mae Martin?

  Come on.

• 20:22Fortune Feimster?

I doubt it. For sure, they're waiting.

• 20:24Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 20:25Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 20:26Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 20:26Mae Martin?

Now, would you still endorse the marriage?

• 20:29Fortune Feimster?

They'd be having that athletic sex.

• 20:31Mae Martin?

  Oh, do you think?

• 20:32Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, two people who are athletic. That means it's bendy, there's people in the air.

• 20:38Mae Martin?

But he's, he's not bendy. That's the thing, maybe he can throw her around, but like.

• 20:43Tig Notaro?

Yeah, but she'll stand on his shoulders, whatever that position is.

• 20:46Fortune Feimster?

  Handstands.

• 20:48Mae Martin?

  Oh, the old.

• 20:49Tig Notaro?

Okay, let me ask you this.

• 20:50Mae Martin?

The old Cirque du Soleil move.

• 20:52Tig Notaro?

I haven't seen her live, but is she alive?

• 20:55Fortune Feimster?

  She's incredible.

• 20:56Tig Notaro?

Okay, is she a live performer like Pink that twirls around on things?

• 21:00Fortune Feimster?

No, but she performs for three and a half hours nonstop.

• 21:03Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 21:04Mae Martin?

Yeah, no, she's playing instruments and stuff.

• 21:05Fortune Feimster?

  Singing, instruments, it's insane.

• 21:08Tig Notaro?

She's playing instruments and stuff, May?

• 21:10Mae Martin?

And the one, the one kind of big move she does that's a bit like Pink is she dives off the stage into a trapdoor kind of thing.

• 21:18Fortune Feimster?

  Her show was incredible.

• 21:20Mae Martin?

It was incredible, but would you guys, would you guys support and endorse the union if he was a centaur?

• 21:26Tig Notaro?

  I knew that was coming.

• 21:28Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, come on.

• 21:29Tig Notaro?

  I want whatever Tay wants.

• 21:30Mae Martin?

He's hairy like a centaur. Yeah, he is, yeah.

• 21:33Tig Notaro?

Yeah, but does he have woolly, furry back legs like my wife?

• 21:39Fortune Feimster?

My wife? I'm, I'm pretty pumped for them and everyone I know tuned in to find out how we felt about their engagement and I give it two. Thumbs up.

• 21:51Mae Martin?

I thought you were gonna say two stars and I was like, whoa.

• 21:54Fortune Feimster?

  Two handsome ponties.

• 21:57Tig Notaro?

  Two handsome ponties.

• 21:59Mae Martin?

Do we have a rating system that's how many ponties?

• 22:02Fortune Feimster?

Oh, yeah. Two doesn't seem enough. Five?

• 22:05Mae Martin?

  Five ponties.

• 22:06Fortune Feimster?

On a scale from one to five ponties, I give them five ponties.

• 22:10Tig Notaro?

Should we pivot to making this?

• 22:13Fortune Feimster?

  A new topic?

• 22:14Tig Notaro?

  No, no.

• 22:16Mae Martin?

  Never.

• 22:17Tig Notaro?

Pod, no. Should we pivot to this podcast only covering pop culture?

• 22:23Fortune Feimster?

Oh, wow. That would be, um.

• 22:26Tig Notaro?

  A disaster.

• 22:27Fortune Feimster?

  A disaster for sure.

• 22:29Mae Martin?

  Well, there's an instant.

• 22:31Fortune Feimster?

You two going, girl, tell us, girl. And I'm like, okay, you guys, here's the scoop.

• 22:36Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:38Tig Notaro?

  And we're just giddy.

• 22:39Mae Martin?

Yeah. You're the only one who knows anything.

• 22:42Fortune Feimster?

Fortune's Podcast, uh, Pop Culture Corner or something.

• 22:46Mae Martin?

Well, we could have a segment.

• 22:47Tig Notaro?

  Pop Corner.

• 22:48Mae Martin?

A little segment called Pop Corner where you tell us.

• 22:51Fortune Feimster?

  Pop Corner.

• 22:52Mae Martin?

  A bit of goss.

• 22:54Tig Notaro?

Which translates to Popular Corner. Pop is short for popular, so.

• 22:59Fortune Feimster?

  What's goss short for, Tig?

• 23:01Mae Martin?

  Gossamer.

• 23:02Tig Notaro?

  Gossip.

• 23:03Fortune Feimster?

  Good.

• 23:05Tig Notaro?

  Why did you not know?

• 23:06Fortune Feimster?

  No, I knew.

• 23:08Tig Notaro?

Don't get an attitude with me.

• 23:10Mae Martin?

  You're just testing, Tig.

• 23:14Fortune Feimster?

Well, that's all I got in my pop culture corner.

• 23:17Mae Martin?

  More than enough.

• 23:18Tig Notaro?

It, it could be fun to have, um, people explain, cause I was thinking after that one episode where you guys were telling me about that show where lesbians.

• 23:33Mae Martin?

  Queer Ultimatum.

• 23:34Tig Notaro?

Yeah, Queer Ultimatum. And then I went home and told Stephanie I wanted to watch it and she was like, I've been begging you to watch that. But, um, after that episode, I thought, God, it would be so fun if you guys told me about pop culture that I'd never heard of. I've had a million questions. But, um, anyway, do you follow pop culture a lot too, May?

• 23:55Mae Martin?

I mean, it comes up on my phone so much that I feel like there's certain people I'm interested in, but then I feel like I'm, I really, I feel like I'm, like I'm, like I'm aging out of pop culture because there's a whole bunch of people that I don't know who they are. Like I'll see a headline that's like, you know, Branko.

• 24:17Mae Martin?

McLean is, and I'm like, who? And it's like, this Euphoria cast member is like, I don't know. I, yeah, I'm still stuck on like J Lo and Mariah Carey and Britney. Like, I'm, that's my era.

• 24:29Fortune Feimster?

I don't know if there's any, I was looking at my phone to see if there's any other pop culture stuff, y'all.

• 24:34Tig Notaro?

  Okay, tell me this.

• 24:36Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 24:36Tig Notaro?

I, you know, the phenomenon of trad wives?

• 24:40Mae Martin?

Yeah, I'm late to that as well.

• 24:43Tig Notaro?

Okay, trad wives are women who, it stands for traditional wives.

• 24:49Mae Martin?

  Okay.

• 24:50Tig Notaro?

And they live very traditional, old school.

• 24:55Mae Martin?

  Like Amish.

• 24:56Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 24:57Mae Martin?

  Okay.

• 24:58Tig Notaro?

And I've wanted, I wanted to start, even though I know I'll never do this.

• 25:05Mae Martin?

  Uh huh.

• 25:06Tig Notaro?

And so if anyone steals this, they stole it from me. But I want to start a video series called Trad Dyke, where I teach people how to be a traditional.

• 25:17Mae Martin?

Really good. Like what music to listen to, what to wear.

• 25:21Tig Notaro?

And what to wear. Yeah. Every day or every week, I come out with a Trad Dyke video.

• 25:27Fortune Feimster?

Well, I feel like, um, I mean, that could catch on because I feel like more and more ladies are dipping into the lady pond.

• 25:37Mae Martin?

Yeah, but they're not dipping into Trad Dyke. Or they're like, you know, this is why it would be useful, I think, for them to learn the culture quickly. These are straight women who are, you know, or who are latent bisexual women who are, then you're right, later in life dipping into that. Seems to be happening a lot, but if they had a Trad Dyke video that they could just pop on and be like, okay. So I listened, I listened to the Indigo Girls.

• 26:01Fortune Feimster?

Cause I just keep hearing of more, uh, I mean, there's been some high profiled lesbians who are now dating men. And that's really upset some people.

• 26:10Tig Notaro?

  Who is this?

• 26:11Fortune Feimster?

  Jojo Siwa.

• 26:13Mae Martin?

Well, Jojo was always queer and bi, and then people just got so mad that.

• 26:17Fortune Feimster?

And she has a boyfriend now.

• 26:19Mae Martin?

  Boyfriend, yeah.

• 26:20Fortune Feimster?

  They're very in love.

• 26:22Tig Notaro?

  Was she on our show?

• 26:23Mae Martin?

  No.

• 26:24Fortune Feimster?

  No.

• 26:27Mae Martin?

That's a big part of Pop Corner is going, "Did they ask a question?"

• 26:33Tig Notaro?

Well, it sounds familiar. She sounds familiar.

• 26:35Fortune Feimster?

And then Fletcher, singer, okay, all the lesbians were obsessed with Fletcher and she has a boyfriend now.

• 26:43Mae Martin?

  Yeah, but this policing is-

• 26:45Fortune Feimster?

And they were very upset about it. I'm not, listen, I'm like, let people be, love who you love.

• 26:49Tig Notaro?

No, you're not, Fortune. You said, "All girls should be with girls."

• 26:53Fortune Feimster?

You said that. I just think girls are so great, women, women loving women, it's a real treat.

• 27:01Tig Notaro?

Well, I just think that May's world and representation is so, I think, freeing for everybody to get to know and-

• 27:12Fortune Feimster?

Just like, love who you love?

• 27:13Tig Notaro?

But it really is, because it's like, if you, who care, like, who cares where you go or what you're doing or who you've fallen in love with or, you know, because people are certainly accepting if, like you said, a woman who dates men starts dating a woman, people are like, "Yeah, that's awesome." But if they go the other way, it's this sense of like, "We've lost somebody."

• 27:36Fortune Feimster?

  Betrayal.

• 27:37Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and it's like, if your whole idea is that you should be able to love who you love, and that's why I go back to May, it's like-

• 27:45Fortune Feimster?

  It's gotta go both ways.

• 27:46Tig Notaro?

Well, May's look and presentation can make you feel and think a certain way and, or, you know, or think you know.

• 27:56Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:57Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and then you get in there and talk to May and you're like, anyway, I just think it's such a great quality. Like, you're so genuinely drawn to different people and genders and sexuality and, and I, no, I think it's, I think it's really awesome.

• 28:16Mae Martin?

That's gotta be the future. I always remember getting booed at a Pride Festival because I talked about dating a boy onstage and it was all, and I got booed and I was like, "What the hell?"

• 28:27Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, it's, it's weird.

• 28:31Fortune Feimster?

Lesbians don't like it. They don't like it. They don't like it.

• 28:34Tig Notaro?

I've shared with you, May, there's been a couple of guys in my life that have confused me to all ends.

• 28:41Mae Martin?

  Of course.

• 28:42Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 28:43Mae Martin?

Maybe that can be part of the trad dyke thing. You can, it's like, you can still, your identity can be trad dyke, but that doesn't mean you can't sleep with men. It's like-

• 28:51Fortune Feimster?

Well, but the trad- You can't touch a wiener.

• 28:55Tig Notaro?

And then I have to bat Fortune out of the video.

• 28:59Fortune Feimster?

Hey, you ladies wanna touch a wiener?

• 29:02Mae Martin?

Fortune can play your, your wife who pops in every once in a while.

• 29:06Tig Notaro?

  Or, or my best friend.

• 29:08Fortune Feimster?

I heard you wanted to touch a wiener. Tig called me over here to just say, hey, nothing wrong with it. Go touch a wiener.

• 29:15Tig Notaro?

  I did it once.

• 29:16Fortune Feimster?

I did it once. I don't have any advice for you or tips. It didn't go great, but good luck.

• 29:22Tig Notaro?

They didn't ask me back or nothing?

• 29:25Fortune Feimster?

I've never, I've never touched the same wiener twice. I'll tell you that.

• 29:33Tig Notaro?

We both decided it was one and done.

• 29:36Fortune Feimster?

Let's call it. Let's call it. We don't need to keep doing this.

• 29:41Tig Notaro?

But I think trad dyke is, is all for like, look, I'm a trad dyke. This is what I do. This is how I look, but I'm all for be who you are and love who you love.

• 29:53Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 29:54Fortune Feimster?

  Love who you love.

• 29:55Tig Notaro?

  Love.

• 29:58Fortune Feimster?

I just, listen, I'm all about it. I just love, I just love a lady.

• 30:02Tig Notaro?

  I know you do, brother.

• 30:05Fortune Feimster?

  I'm a lady lover.

• 30:07Mae Martin?

All the news like that feels like fresh goss to me, like pop culture news is like the stuff that I'm like lying awake thinking about is like the Titanic sinking or like the Galveston flood. Like I'm like back in the day is still getting, I'm still getting over like.

• 30:21Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 30:22Mae Martin?

  You know?

• 30:22Tig Notaro?

  It's hard to move fast.

• 30:24Mae Martin?

It is. Yeah. I'm still into like Judy Garland and Mickey, what's his name? Mickey Rooney Rourke? Mickey Rourke? No, Mickey Rooney.

• 30:34Tig Notaro?

  So Mickey Rourke?

• 30:38Tig Notaro?

I'm up all night thinking about Mickey Rourke.

• 30:41Mae Martin?

  Mickey Rourke and Judy Garland.

• 30:46Fortune Feimster?

  Oh my God.

• 30:51Fortune Feimster?

Are you gonna go on a date with a dude anytime soon?

• 30:54Tig Notaro?

  I don't know.

• 30:55Fortune Feimster?

  Me?

• 30:55Tig Notaro?

  Oh.

• 30:56Fortune Feimster?

  Tig.

• 30:59Fortune Feimster?

  I don't know. We'll see.

• 31:01Tig Notaro?

  See, I don't know.

• 31:04Mae Martin?

I don't know. I might, I might be Googling some centaur porn after this, though.

• 31:07Fortune Feimster?

I know. You're really into it.

• 31:09Tig Notaro?

Or maybe put some out instead of Googling it.

• 31:12Mae Martin?

Well, I always wanted to, to play Mr. Tumnus in, in Narnia. You know, Mr. Tumnus, he's half.

• 31:19Tig Notaro?

I think you were talking about Mr. Thomas.

• 31:21Mae Martin?

Mr. Thomas. I've always wanted to play Mr. Thomas.

• 31:25Fortune Feimster?

I could see you playing a centaur, May.

• 31:27Mae Martin?

I'd love it, guys. I'd love it. This is, we're getting to the root now of.

• 31:31Tig Notaro?

This all ties back to our horse suit.

• 31:34Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 31:35Tig Notaro?

We should get in a centaur suit.

• 31:37Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 31:38Tig Notaro?

  Mm-hmm.

• 31:38Fortune Feimster?

Does this tie back in any way to Taylor Swift getting engaged?

• 31:41Tig Notaro?

  Everything does.

• 31:43Fortune Feimster?

  Every good.

• 31:44Tig Notaro?

  She's marrying half centaur.

• 31:46Fortune Feimster?

  Half centaur.

• 31:48Tig Notaro?

  Half centaur.

• 31:51Mae Martin?

Well, should we get to our question?

• 31:52Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, we should.

• 31:53Fortune Feimster?

Yes, I guess. We're having such a lovely chat. I just love chatting with my friends.

• 31:59Tig Notaro?

  On the Hanson Pod.

• 32:00Fortune Feimster?

  Mm-hmm.

• 32:01Mae Martin?

Well, today's question asker is a stand-up comedian whose Broadway show Just for Us won a Tony and an Emmy Award. He was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People in 2024, and he stars in the new The Office follow-up, The Paper. Alex Edelman is asking today's question.

• 32:18Fortune Feimster?

  Woo, woo.

• 32:19Speaker 04

Hi, handsome gang. Uh, my name is Alex Edelman, and I'm a comedian. And my question is, is there like a person from your childhood that was like in your community was like this sort of eccentric adult and you sort of loved them or had a strong feeling about them?

• 32:39Mae Martin?

We've never had a question asker tell us their job. My name is Alex Edelman. I'm a comedian.

• 32:44Fortune Feimster?

  I'm a comedian?

• 32:45Mae Martin?

  I love that.

• 32:46Fortune Feimster?

I'm a comedian? How do you get on one of those top lists?

• 32:50Mae Martin?

I got on one of those.

• 32:51Fortune Feimster?

  Good job, babe.

• 32:54Mae Martin?

I'm trying to remember, I just saw Alex at, um, I went to do Doug Benson's Doug Loves Movies, uh, a Dynasty typewriter where you have like a microphone and you make fun of the movie and you watch it. Yeah. The audience brings movies and we watched Dunston Checks In about a orangutan and,

• 33:10Fortune Feimster?

  orangutan.

• 33:11Mae Martin?

  Orangutan.

• 33:13Tig Notaro?

  That's actually the correct pronunciation.

• 33:16Mae Martin?

  Really?

• 33:16Tig Notaro?

  Two against one. Orangutan.

• 33:20Mae Martin?

But Alex was so funny and it was the craziest cast. If you haven't seen that movie in a while, it's, it's Jason Alexander, Faye Dunaway, Rupert Everett, Paul Rubens and an orangutan.

• 33:34Tig Notaro?

Well, if you do look at the word orangutan.

• 33:37Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 33:38Tig Notaro?

There is no G and people always say orangutan.

• 33:41Mae Martin?

Orangutan, I see. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 33:43Tig Notaro?

  So ha ha, fortune.

• 33:45Mae Martin?

Okay, an eccentric adult from childhood, like a, like an aunt or a family friend who like delighted you. That's such a, I want to be that person for, for kids.

• 33:55Tig Notaro?

Mm hmm, mm hmm. I had a lot of those people in my family.

• 34:00Fortune Feimster?

I feel like there's a lot of eccentric southern people.

• 34:03Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 34:04Fortune Feimster?

  But especially in Mississippi.

• 34:06Tig Notaro?

Yeah, they're just like down, they're like, everybody come on in, let's have a great time. My cousin Donald is just like, he's just such a character. It, it's, it, Stephanie was just talking about him again to her mother when we were driving back from our vacation. Even at our wedding, you know, he got on the mic and was like talking to everyone and just like, you met Donald, right, Thomas?

• 34:40Speaker 03

Yes, I've met Donald. He is a character.

• 34:43Mae Martin?

So he's just super confident and like extrovert?

• 34:46Tig Notaro?

Oh my gosh, yes. He, he's an attorney. He used to be the judge in town. He's, uh, his family's been there in that same small town for generations and he's just so.

• 34:59Tig Notaro?

Confident, he's so funny, he's, he can, he's just so comfortable in any situation.

• 35:05Mae Martin?

And when, when you were a kid, would you get excited when he'd come over?

• 35:08Tig Notaro?

Oh, my gosh, I just, he, he's like 10, 12 years older than me and he was kind of like, he's my cousin, but he, he and his brothers felt like older brothers to me.

• 35:21Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 35:21Tig Notaro?

And they were kind of like younger brothers to my mother. And so we just have this very close weird relationship with these four brothers.

• 35:32Mae Martin?

Do you have a big family like that, Fortune? I, I have such a nuclear family, but you guys have this, like a big loud house with everybody, kinda?

• 35:39Fortune Feimster?

Um, I mean, I had, in my immediate family was two older brothers and myself. And we have a bunch of cousins, but they live in Florida.

• 35:49Tig Notaro?

  Hmm.

• 35:49Fortune Feimster?

Um, so there were times when the fam, it was a big family situation. Um, but not all the time.

• 35:57Tig Notaro?

Yeah, see, like that side of my family, they're kind of those, it's a small town. People just walk into each other's homes, nobody's ringing doorbells or knocking and, you know, it's, it's just, it's a free for all. And I always tell friends, like, if you're going through my town, here's where my cousin lives and I bet you $1 billion if you knock on Jimmy's door and go in and just say, I'm friends with Tig and she said I could stay here a couple of weeks, he wouldn't have a follow-up question and he wouldn't even, he would not, you can move in with him. He would not reach out to ask me who this person is.

• 36:36Fortune Feimster?

There's at least one listener right now who's like, I'm heading there. I need a place to, I, I need to get out of a couple of jams, so I'm gonna go.

• 36:45Tig Notaro?

I remember one time when Thomas was with me and we walked into Jimmy and Beverly's house and right when we walked in, they had this crazy, like, they said two seconds after we walked in their house, it was an infestation of what? Do you remember?

• 37:03Speaker 03

I thought they were just like big mobs or some flies or something.

• 37:07Tig Notaro?

Something, but it was like a horror film. They were all inside their house and they just hand Thomas this like electric tennis racket. They had never met Thomas.

• 37:19Fortune Feimster?

  They're like, they kill flies?

• 37:21Tig Notaro?

And all of a sudden, seconds later, he's just going around this stranger's house. Everybody's like batting at all of these all these bugs. Anyway, it's just, it's a circus. They're very gregarious, fun, rib each other, just teasing, laughing loud, but not obnoxious. Just really fun. Like Michelle Buteau filmed an episode of a show of hers in, well, I was in the episode and we did this in my town.

• 37:51Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 37:52Tig Notaro?

And after we filmed, I called my cousin Jimmy and I said, hey, we just wrapped up. Can I bring my friend Michelle over? And he was like, yeah. He was like, bring everyone. And I was like, oh, well, I was like, oh, Jimmy, I said, it's a whole TV crew. And he goes, yeah, yeah, yeah. Bring everyone. And I was like, okay. And so I tell the whole crew. I mean, I'm talking every person from the crew.

• 38:17Fortune Feimster?

  That's funny.

• 38:19Tig Notaro?

And this is Jimmy said, bring them over now. And then he, and he had a crawfish boil in the back, in his backyard, within a half hour and the whole, whole crew was partying in his yard 30 minutes later. And, um, and like, I have hilarious videos of that after party and they were all just, the crew was like, we never get invited to anything. It's always like the stars. And I was like, oh, I said, yeah, my cousin is, they are down. They're down.

• 38:57Fortune Feimster?

He's got a crawfish guy that he just calls up, like, bring me the good stuff.

• 39:01Tig Notaro?

Yeah. And that's where we got married was at Jimmy's house.

• 39:05Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, no way.

• 39:06Tig Notaro?

That whole family, they're just like. They're just, and that's when I say honestly, if you walked in his door and said, "I'm gonna go upstairs and crash for a few weeks. I need some time alone." He'd be like, "Absolutely. My house is yours. Tell me what you need. Very nice to meet you, May. What do your parents do? Tell me. Where are you from?" Like, he's just like, they're all very welcoming.

• 39:31Mae Martin?

I don't know why I went to Lake Arrowhead. I should've gone. You should've gone to Mississippi. Yeah, to have a crawfish boil.

• 39:38Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 39:39Mae Martin?

  Oh, man.

• 39:41Tig Notaro?

Oh, my God. One last thing. His daughter's best friend is a gay guy in New Orleans. And New Orleans is like an hour away from my town. And he and his husband were having their engagement party, and Jimmy's daughter was hosting it at Jimmy's house. And we had heard that, just it was, the house was packed, just all gay guys. And like, there were drag queens and, and we were just like, Stephanie and I were just eating this up, hearing about their engagement party at Jimmy's house. And Stephanie was like, "Jimmy, I heard your house is just full of gay guys and drag queens last weekend."

• 40:26Tig Notaro?

He was like, "Absolutely." He said, "It wasn't the first time and it won't be the last." And we were just laughing, thinking of Jimmy, who's like in his boat shoes and shorts and like polo button down, just being like, "Hello, my name is Jimmy. What do your parents do?" To like, a big drag queen.

• 40:48Tig Notaro?

"My house is your house. Everybody's welcome. Please tell your family to come visit."

• 40:52Mae Martin?

I like Jimmy. There's something so nice about, yeah, a straight guy is super comfortable with it. It's crazy that's even still a thing, like that I'm still, like, my heart is so warmed by the idea of like a southern straight guy who's just like really into hanging with. Yeah, that's great.

• 41:09Tig Notaro?

Anyway, that's, that's what I think of with my childhood.

• 41:12Mae Martin?

Yeah. I had a godmother who lived with us when I was tiny and she was 19 when she lived with us. She lived in our basement and like when I was, I want to say born, my, her dad ran a primary school that my brother went to and she got to know my mom and my mom was, she needed somewhere to live. My mom was like, just move in with us and you can kind of babysit to make cash sometimes and, and hang with the kids. And then she was just like a huge part of our life for years and years and was so fun, is so fun. Her name's V. She's so fun and fun with kids and like would invent games, like this game called Hop, Hop, Hop,

• 41:54Mae Martin?

where we would hide a spoon under a pillow and then you hop around the house and then she sings the Hop, Hop, Hop song. And if you stop on the pillow that has the spoon, you get a prize. And my brother would be so outraged because the prize was raisins and he was like, I can get those out of the cupboard at any time.

• 42:11Tig Notaro?

It should have been the spoon that was under.

• 42:13Mae Martin?

You get to keep the spoon. But she was just like fun and we would, we would really laugh together and we, we, um, we wrote a song together when I was about seven called Look and I still remember it. It's open, open strumming, like no chords and it's, it's sort of performance art. And it's like, look into the nest, in the nest, there is an egg, in the egg, there is a bird. Look, but it goes on for about 12 verses.

• 42:41Tig Notaro?

  Go on.

• 42:46Mae Martin?

It's like a Russian nesting doll. You fly into the future, into the present, into the past. Look. Anyway, it was, but imagine a seven year old doing that with a.

• 42:56Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 42:56Mae Martin?

I can imagine you doing that for sure. Yeah.

• 42:59Tig Notaro?

It sounds like it might have inspired a lot of who you are.

• 43:03Mae Martin?

  A hundred percent. Yeah.

• 43:04Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 43:05Mae Martin?

But that, people do have such a huge impact on you. Yeah. Even if they're not. You know, your primary attachments or whatever like that's so important, I think.

• 43:14Tig Notaro?

It's so important for kids to meet people outside. I mean, it sounds like an obvious statement, but like because everyone is so kind of in their homes, on phones, computers, iPads, online games. It's so important to go in for kids to go into other people's homes and see how they live and meet these different personalities and interact so you can be influenced by these different characters.

• 43:45Mae Martin?

And be like, there's different ways to live outside my family like and to have someone who you can kind of, you know, one of your parents says something and you can kind of roll your eyes with this other adult is so validating like, yeah.

• 43:58Fortune Feimster?

Well, they kind of bring out the like imagination of kids more and the like excitement and adventure of things.

• 44:07Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 44:07Fortune Feimster?

I think they kind of foster that environment where you want to be kind of eccentric to right along with them.

• 44:14Mae Martin?

Yeah. What about you? Did you have like a family friend?

• 44:17Fortune Feimster?

I've mentioned them before, but I grew up with two uncles, my mom's brothers, who, for lack of a better word, had like learning disabilities. So they, they had like the education of, I think they went through sixth grade, but they had maybe that like, um, mental capacity of, of maybe that age as well. But they just were so fun and, but adults. So I'm a kid like looking at them as adults, but they're like kind of my peers in a way.

• 44:58Mae Martin?

  Yeah. Were they twins?

• 45:00Fortune Feimster?

They were not twins. Um, one was born that way and one, um, I can't remember if I told you this, his, when he was born, they used forceps on his head.

• 45:09Mae Martin?

  Wow.

• 45:11Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. And so it created these, these problems.

• 45:15Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 45:15Fortune Feimster?

  So like.

• 45:16Tig Notaro?

  How crazy.

• 45:17Fortune Feimster?

I know. And, and, um, so they just were like the most eccentric people I've ever come across still in all of my life. And I've never been able to talk about them. Very much because it's hard to describe them.

• 45:35Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 45:36Fortune Feimster?

Um, in a, in a, uh, in a way that makes sense to people, but, uh, just very, um, animated. And one, one was, as he got older, he hunched, he was hunched over and he chewed cigars.

• 45:51Tig Notaro?

Chewed cigars. Are they still alive?

• 45:53Fortune Feimster?

No, one died when I was, um, seven and then my other uncle Bud died when I was like twenty-four.

• 46:01Tig Notaro?

Would they play with you and stuff when they'd come over and?

• 46:04Fortune Feimster?

  No, they were lazy.

• 46:08Tig Notaro?

  All the better.

• 46:09Fortune Feimster?

So my uncle Bud, he loved, he loved to garden and, uh, actually was a great gardener. And, but he would, he would lay in the garden and plant stuff.

• 46:21Tig Notaro?

  Sounds like a great gardener.

• 46:23Fortune Feimster?

He would, he would like lay down on his side and like, and plant stuff with one hand.

• 46:30Tig Notaro?

  While he was lying down?

• 46:31Fortune Feimster?

  While he was lying down.

• 46:32Tig Notaro?

All right, that's a good gardener. Yeah, that's awesome.

• 46:36Fortune Feimster?

And he would lay out in the front yard too, with his hat kinda over his eyes. And when people would walk by, he'd go, much obliged, much obliged.

• 46:47Fortune Feimster?

And, uh, and he called me little, he called me little Bud. He was Bud and I was little Bud.

• 46:52Tig Notaro?

That's so cute. Can we call you little Bud?

• 46:56Fortune Feimster?

I don't guess, but he, he would, he took us to like the circus when I was a kid. And, and he, he was that uncle who was like, you want a monkey? I'll get you a monkey. And my mom's like, she can't have a monkey. And I'm like, Bud said I can have a monkey. And she's like, you can't own a monkey. He would just like show up with a, um, puppy and she was like, we can't keep a puppy. And he'd be like, why not? And, uh.

• 47:25Tig Notaro?

He's got a point. Now, wait, uh, with, um, when you said kind of the, um, level of like a sixth grader.

• 47:34Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 47:34Tig Notaro?

Was he coming over by himself or was?

• 47:36Fortune Feimster?

He actually drove. He had a license somehow. And did he live? But he lived with my grandmother his whole life. Yeah, so um, she made all his meals for him. He had no teeth, but like two. They were all rotted out because he wouldn't shower or brush his teeth.

• 47:55Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 47:56Fortune Feimster?

And he always had um, cigar juice down his shirt. And he loved to eat. And when we, when we take us to the circus, he goes, hey, little bud. You know what noise an elephant makes? And I was like, no bud. And he was like, angawa, angawa. What?

• 48:16Tig Notaro?

  Angawa?

• 48:17Fortune Feimster?

Angawa was his, he goes, angawa. Where'd he get that? I don't know, but he said that's the name of uh, an elephant. I mean, that's how an elephant talks. And then he, he would go to restaurants and ask for sweet milk. And they were like, what? And then he's like, I want sweet milk. And they were like, oh, okay. And so they would bring him milk and a packet of sugar. And he goes, what's this? And they're like, you want a sweet milk? And he just was trying to get whole milk. But he would call it sweet milk. Because it tasted sweeter to him and like, that's.

• 48:53Tig Notaro?

  Oh bud.

• 48:54Fortune Feimster?

And uh, he picked me up once when I, from school when I was five. And my mom's friend thought I'd been kidnapped. Because he was chewing a cigar. He was very jarring looking. Yeah. And so she called my mom being like, I, you know, saying that I'd been kidnapped and that this, this man, this like, like woolly looking man had taken me. And she's like, oh, that's my brother. I love that the teacher let you get in the car and drive away before and then made the call. And he drove this Jeep that like, the old ass Jeep where the floor was like um, rusted out and you could like see the road.

• 49:32Tig Notaro?

Was it just her or two brothers?

• 49:34Fortune Feimster?

  What's that?

• 49:35Tig Notaro?

Was it your mother and her two brothers?

• 49:37Fortune Feimster?

Uh, there were three brothers, but two of them had this. Uh, these disabilities. And so, from, and he, and Bud would watch television and uh, confuse real life with TV. And he'd be like, uh, you know, uh, he'd watch Texas Walker Ranger. And so, he would think that stuff was happening in real life. And so he'd tell you stories and you'd be like, what? And then you'd realize it was the TV show. And then he'd be like, a squirrel came and talked to me today. And you're just like,

• 50:11Fortune Feimster?

  yeah, of course.

• 50:14Tig Notaro?

What, what, how does the squirrel, what does, what does the squirrel say?

• 50:17Fortune Feimster?

He never told me how the squirrel talks, but he, and he, he's like Oprah said, chocolate is good for you. So I'm gonna give you some chocolate. And I'm like, I don't know if that's what she said. And he goes, also the air conditioning can kill you. He, he's like Mayfax, but Budfax.

• 50:31Mae Martin?

But just absorbed from the TV and like filtered through.

• 50:33Fortune Feimster?

Took all kinds of stuff, yeah. So, uh, so my life, my childhood was very colorful because of them.

• 50:40Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 50:41Tig Notaro?

And was your family open about talking about what was going on with them? Or was it?

• 50:47Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, small town, everybody knew who they were. Uh, well, except for my mom, that one mom, my mom's friend who just moved to town. Uh, but yeah, for the most part, people just knew like, oh, those, that's Evelyn's boys that have lived with her forever.

• 51:02Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 51:03Fortune Feimster?

My grandma took care of them until the day she died.

• 51:06Mae Martin?

  Wow.

• 51:07Tig Notaro?

And that's the grandma that you, um, are so close to?

• 51:11Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, yeah. She died before Bud did. Uh, and then my mom had to take care of him for a few years.

• 51:21Fortune Feimster?

He's just like, get me out of here.

• 51:27Fortune Feimster?

Uh, but they were so lovely and, you know, just sweet spirited. Kind, uh, love to eat, love candy, love watching TV, just very simple, but you know, uh, good, good hearted men.

• 51:41Mae Martin?

  I love that.

• 51:42Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 51:43Mae Martin?

Small town is kind of ideal there. Like everyone's kind of looking out for each other and yeah.

• 51:50Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 51:51Tig Notaro?

Yeah, well, it makes it hard, you know, when you're in such a big city, people are so disconnected and they start to not care about the town or people. And then you go to a little town and, and you take pride in where you live and keeping up your yard or, you know, what, not every town, but.

• 52:12Mae Martin?

  Crawfish boil.

• 52:13Tig Notaro?

Yeah, you invite an entire television crew. I mean, obviously, again, not every small town is all picturesque and whatever, but it, I think it is. There's just something really nice about a small town vibe. Or it can be, there can be.

• 52:32Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, I love where I'm from. It's very cute, very kind and a lot of people looking out for each other.

• 52:39Mae Martin?

  That's nice.

• 52:40Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 52:41Mae Martin?

  Should we hear Alex's answer?

• 52:43Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, let's do it.

• 52:44Speaker 04

In my community, there's a woman named Sharon and she had a pet parrot named Snooks who loved to curse. And also she had long fingernails and she would paint current events on the fingernails. Remember once she showed me like OJ stabbing Nicole when I was very, very young? She was entirely inappropriate as a person and I adored her. So I was wondering if you guys had a similar kooky adult? All right, guys.

• 53:14Tig Notaro?

  Similar but different.

• 53:15Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 53:16Fortune Feimster?

I wonder if everyone who's in the arts or a comedian or performance in a way, like always think about the most eccentric people the most fondly when they look back.

• 53:26Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 53:27Mae Martin?

I can't believe she would paint current events on, like, that's crazy. That makes me want to paint Tay and Trav.

• 53:33Tig Notaro?

I was gonna say, I feel like

• 53:34Fortune Feimster?

  Hey Tay.

• 53:36Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 53:37Tig Notaro?

  May's brain is a churning.

• 53:39Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 53:39Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 53:40Fortune Feimster?

Cause today will live forever as the day they got engaged.

• 53:45Tig Notaro?

  August 26th.

• 53:47Fortune Feimster?

  Mm hmm.

• 53:48Tig Notaro?

We are all over the place with when we record episodes.

• 53:54Mae Martin?

But I always love it. It's always a slice in a tree.

• 53:57Fortune Feimster?

I wish I could kiss you guys right now.

• 54:00Tig Notaro?

I wish I could lick your nose.

• 54:02Mae Martin?

  Your eyes closed like that.

• 54:03Fortune Feimster?

  Hmm.

• 54:04Mae Martin?

I've gotten in trouble before for keeping my eyes open when I kiss.

• 54:08Fortune Feimster?

Oh yeah, that's not good. Don't do that.

• 54:10Mae Martin?

I know, it's creepy. I just sometimes forget to close them.

• 54:13Tig Notaro?

Well, sometimes you want to see the person that you're so excited and happy to be kissing, right?

• 54:18Mae Martin?

  Exactly.

• 54:19Fortune Feimster?

You gotta, you gotta get in there, right? Like this.

• 54:21Tig Notaro?

Oh, fortunes. Fortunes become very sexual.

• 54:29Tig Notaro?

We're just trying to podcast and Fortune's French kissing our podcast.

• 54:34Fortune Feimster?

You wanna see who's up to being sexual, look at that guy.

• 54:39Mae Martin?

I can't even tell what part of his body is where there. He's just a white.

• 54:45Tig Notaro?

Does anyone have anything coming up?

• 54:47Mae Martin?
