Welcome to the Handsome Pod. I'm one of your hosts, Mae Martin. Joined, it's so lovely to see you guys as always. Bye, joined by... I'm Fortune Feimster.

• 2:01Fortune Feimster?

  And I'm Tig Notaro.

• 2:02Tig Notaro?

  Hi friends.

• 2:03Fortune Feimster?

  Hi friends.

• 2:05Mae Martin?

  Hi.

• 2:06Fortune Feimster?

May, wherever you are is gorgeous.

• 2:09Mae Martin?

  Thank you.

• 2:10Tig Notaro?

Looks like you're in a, like a greenhouse.

• 2:13Mae Martin?

I'm in Lake Arrowhead. It's happening. My weird solo meditative excursion.

• 2:21Tig Notaro?

Where you're inviting a bunch of people up?

• 2:24Mae Martin?

  Well, yeah.

• 2:25Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, what happened with that?

• 2:27Mae Martin?

Well, okay, I've been up here five days and like three of those days I've been by myself, like, like sleeping by in the quiet house in the woods, so isolated. I have no car. I have no Uber Eats. I have no Uber Blacks. I have no Uber.

• 2:45Tig Notaro?

  My goodness.

• 2:46Fortune Feimster?

How'd you get, how'd you get there?

• 2:47Mae Martin?

  Uber.

• 2:49Fortune Feimster?

  You Ubered?

• 2:50Tig Notaro?

  Uber Black.

• 2:50Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 2:50Fortune Feimster?

  You Ubered to Lake Arrowhead?

• 2:53Mae Martin?

Yes, with so much stuff in the Uber. I packed up so much stuff and then I'm on the road and I was thinking, well, okay, then what the hell is all that other stuff in my house? Cause I have everything I need. I mean, I've got multiple suitcases, paints, instruments, cameras.

• 3:11Fortune Feimster?

  Oh my gosh.

• 3:12Mae Martin?

Facial products, weights, like I brought my whole.

• 3:15Tig Notaro?

  Fake mustaches?

• 3:16Fortune Feimster?

  Wait, you brought weights?

• 3:17Mae Martin?

  I brought weights.

• 3:18Fortune Feimster?

That Uber driver was probably like, the fuck is happening?

• 3:22Mae Martin?

  I know, I know.

• 3:23Fortune Feimster?

Wow, I really need you to pass your driving test. You have to start being able to rent a car.

• 3:29Tig Notaro?

I need you to not, because I enjoy hearing about this ridiculousness. Now, tell us how's it, how it's going? Is it feeling good? Is it what you're hoping? Are you, are you really challenging yourself with this time?

• 3:45Mae Martin?

Yes, I need to challenge myself more maybe, but I'm like, I just realized when I got up here, I I've kind of, I've been craving this for years. It's like maybe 10 years I feel like I've been talking about wanting to do this and bringing on books and stuff. And I am just realizing like I forgot kind of how to, or maybe I never knew how to be a human being. Like it's been so long since I cooked three meals a day for myself and did the dishes after and read a book and went to bed. I'm like, oh my God, I get why people do this.

• 4:19Tig Notaro?

And so what do you do? You just order food in and then throw that away?

• 4:24Mae Martin?

Yeah, the waste. And I'm so, I just am so busy and I don't love my kitchen and I, I don't, I don't know. So I've been, I made a pasta up here. I did make one meal. Actually, maybe we can post a picture of it. Should I, should I find the picture and show you guys? This is when I thought I'd need to challenge myself more.

• 4:44Fortune Feimster?

  Okay, let's see it.

• 4:46Mae Martin?

Maybe you guys can kind of psychoanalyze what this says about me. We could maybe post this picture, but this was a meal that I had high hopes for. I thought, I'm up in the woods. What are you eating in the woods?

• 4:58Tig Notaro?

You're not naked in this photo, are you?

• 5:01Mae Martin?

  No.

• 5:04Fortune Feimster?

Would you have stopped May from showing this picture if so?

• 5:07Tig Notaro?

I just wanted to let our YouTube viewers know that you might be seeing May in the nude. Whether that's good or bad news, I just want you to know. I didn't know if May was trying to trick us into seeing them naked.

• 5:25Mae Martin?

You know, I've been trying to do that.

• 5:26Fortune Feimster?

I think people would very much enjoy it.

• 5:29Tig Notaro?

Is that what you're wanting, Fortune? You want to see May naked?

• 5:32Mae Martin?

Everybody wants it. Come on. Actually, on that topic, someone recently said to me, you know, it's, it's weird how you shave your calves, but not your thighs.

• 5:46Mae Martin?

And I thought, everybody does that, don't they? And then I realized, that's just me. And I, it's like I'm wearing fur shorts. I have these smooth, hairless, womanly thighs. And then I have these manly, like, hairy, or sorry, womanly calves.

• 6:03Tig Notaro?

  Reverse, reverse.

• 6:04Mae Martin?

Hairy thighs. And I just thought everyone's, I thought you're not supposed to shave your thighs because it grows back darker. But anyways, the point is, I'm not shaving my calves anymore. They're not?

• 6:14Fortune Feimster?

Uh-uh, so I don't have to shave them.

• 6:16Tig Notaro?

You don't have any hair on your thighs?

• 6:18Fortune Feimster?

No, I just shave my legs, my gams.

• 6:22Tig Notaro?

I see, I have little prickly hairs coming out of my knees and stuff like that. So I shave all that.

• 6:29Mae Martin?

Fortune, you're just shaving your calves?

• 6:31Fortune Feimster?

I'm just shaving my calves, but if my thighs were hairy, I probably would shave them.

• 6:36Mae Martin?

Okay, well, I think my solution, I'm up in the woods, I'm like, just not gonna shave any of my legs.

• 6:41Fortune Feimster?

I, you know, I like keeping my gams smooth, because I gotta show off those muscles.

• 6:47Mae Martin?

Yes, you do. Okay, this is the meal that I cooked, and I thought, I'm gonna make hot dogs, I'm gonna grill them, I'm gonna do, this was what I-

• 6:56Tig Notaro?

  Nice alone time meal.

• 6:58Fortune Feimster?

  What a fancy meal.

• 7:00Tig Notaro?

  Oh goodness, that is-

• 7:02Mae Martin?

Is there, have you seen this?

• 7:03Fortune Feimster?

What is happening here? It's a hot dog on a bun, one plain hot dog, and one chip?

• 7:09Tig Notaro?

  And two pickles?

• 7:11Mae Martin?

Two Doritos and two pickles. And I thought, I don't know, in my mind, it was gonna be this, I don't know, summery, this gourmet meal?

• 7:22Fortune Feimster?

So I can't tell if you're having a good time, or if you're too lonely.

• 7:26Mae Martin?

I'm having a good time, I'm having a really good time. But you're also, you're also lonely.

• 7:32Tig Notaro?

You're counting the days to get out of there.

• 7:35Mae Martin?

  Look.

• 7:36Tig Notaro?

To load your weights and your hot dogs back in the Uber. You're miserable. Let's talk honestly.

• 7:44Fortune Feimster?

This is great, I'm reading books, and I'm chilling, and I made a hot dog. Somebody please come with me.

• 7:53Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 7:53Fortune Feimster?

I haven't you, have you invited any friends to come up?

• 7:56Mae Martin?

I currently have two friends here and then I have two more friends coming. And yeah, so that, but for the most part, I'm gonna be by myself with the beautiful creatures of the forest. I've seen four raccoons. I've seen blue jays or I think they're blue jays. They're blue. And. About right. Yeah.

• 8:16Tig Notaro?

  Sounds like a blue jay.

• 8:18Mae Martin?

A woodpecker, I saw a vulture, um, a lot of squirrels. And then one squirrel that is his own breed or something. He's like the size of a dog and he.

• 8:28Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 8:29Mae Martin?

Is so muscular and big. And I sound like I have a crush on him, but I don't.

• 8:34Tig Notaro?

Now, can I recommend something? If you do want people to visit you?

• 8:39Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 8:40Tig Notaro?

Send them a picture of your hot dogs.

• 8:44Fortune Feimster?

You guys, I'm making some good meals up here.

• 8:48Mae Martin?

  Cooking up a storm.

• 8:49Tig Notaro?

Is it any better with your friends there?

• 8:52Mae Martin?

Yeah, listen, I'm having a good time.

• 8:54Tig Notaro?

  No, no, no, totally, totally.

• 8:59Mae Martin?

They cooked me a steak last night. That was good.

• 9:03Tig Notaro?

  Is there a hot tub?

• 9:05Mae Martin?

  Yeah, there's a hot tub and there's.

• 9:07Tig Notaro?

  All right, now we're talking.

• 9:08Mae Martin?

There's no real, like this whole lake is private docks. And so one night I snuck onto a stranger's dock and I jumped in at the sunset.

• 9:17Tig Notaro?

  In a horse suit?

• 9:19Mae Martin?

I was in a horse suit. It was heavy in the water.

• 9:22Tig Notaro?

  Uh huh, I bet.

• 9:23Mae Martin?

Yeah, but it's been, it's been good. I mean, you know, we'll check in and see how my mental health's holding up. I've definitely been getting a little weird.

• 9:31Tig Notaro?

We'll check in five minutes after we end this Zoom.

• 9:34Mae Martin?

  Yeah, for the real.

• 9:35Tig Notaro?

  Just see, yeah.

• 9:36Fortune Feimster?

  How long are you there?

• 9:38Mae Martin?

I booked it for three weeks.

• 9:40Fortune Feimster?

  Whoa, that's a long.

• 9:41Tig Notaro?

Okay, but wait, Fortune, did you notice what just happened? You said, how long are you there? And May said, I booked it for three weeks. That is somebody who is not committing to staying for three weeks.

• 9:55Fortune Feimster?

That is May saying, this is how much time it's for, but probably not how many, how much time I'll be there for.

• 10:02Tig Notaro?

  May be honest.

• 10:03Mae Martin?

I'm thinking about making some little trips to LA just to check in.

• 10:08Fortune Feimster?

That's a lot of Uber rides.

• 10:10Mae Martin?

  Yes, seriously.

• 10:11Fortune Feimster?

  A lot of Uber rides.

• 10:13Mae Martin?

  Thank God.

• 10:14Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, you have to like, you have to really like the woods and nature and not have a lot to do to go up there.

• 10:21Tig Notaro?

But also, let's be honest, May is indoors. It's not like May is living off the land.

• 10:28Mae Martin?

Excuse me. I'm out there. I'm sitting at night. I'm feeling the stars, hearing the stars. I'm, I'm a, you know what I was thinking though? All, to all these animals, this is like a bustling metropolis, where they're like, morning, morning. And then in, in the city, they must feel like it's a ghostland where they like, hear a noise and they're like, maybe it's an owl. And then it's just a night bus or something. So I'm in there, I'm in the big city for them.

• 10:54Tig Notaro?

  Yeah. Night buses.

• 10:55Fortune Feimster?

I have to say, I just took a trip that was very, very relaxing. I went to Iceland.

• 11:03Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 11:04Fortune Feimster?

And my best friend Andrea, shout out of 20 years, she went with me. And we had, we had not taken a friend trip in many, many years. And it just was so fun. And I've never been to Iceland before. It was amazing.

• 11:22Tig Notaro?

  I'm so jealous.

• 11:23Fortune Feimster?

Oh, my God. The food's so fresh, so good. We went to this lesbian owned restaurant. Yes. Helga is the chef.

• 11:34Tig Notaro?

  Of course.

• 11:35Fortune Feimster?

She's incredible. I had ate all kinds of things I never thought I would eat. I mean, ever, all Icelandic women are sturdy.

• 11:44Tig Notaro?

  Sure.

• 11:44Fortune Feimster?

Picture that. I fit in very well.

• 11:48Tig Notaro?

  You're a sturdy little lady.

• 11:49Fortune Feimster?

I'm a sturdy little lady. It was the one country I did not get called sir in.

• 11:56Tig Notaro?

I've tried to push you over before and it's nearly impossible. You're so sturdy.

• 12:00Fortune Feimster?

I'm a sturdy gal. So this, this restaurant in, I can't say an Icelandic, but it's, it just stands for food and drink. Helga just gets right to the point.

• 12:10Mae Martin?

  Yeah, no frills, just.

• 12:12Tig Notaro?

  Sturdy names.

• 12:14Fortune Feimster?

But she's like, she's like experimented with flavors, like so much that she has just figured out how to put things together that you'd never think of. And it's incredible.

• 12:26Mae Martin?

  Like hot dogs and pickles.

• 12:28Fortune Feimster?

Like all kinds of things. And my friend is a vegetarian and they, they did stuff for her that she loved and.

• 12:37Fortune Feimster?

So that was amazing. And we went to a bunch of lagoons.

• 12:40Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 12:41Fortune Feimster?

Where you just sit in water for my Andrea, Andrea Kanzler, shout out to my friend. She sat in a spa in a lagoon with me for seven hours.

• 12:50Tig Notaro?

  What?

• 12:51Fortune Feimster?

  Yes.

• 12:52Tig Notaro?

  Were you drunk?

• 12:54Fortune Feimster?

No, neither one. We were so tired and like, but we were both on the same page of just wanting to chill. That like, we just were like, oh, she just texted me, oh my God, it's like, we're still, it's simpatico.

• 13:08Tig Notaro?

Oh my God, are you in love?

• 13:11Fortune Feimster?

Who knows? She's like my sister, gross.

• 13:15Tig Notaro?

  I don't know what you're up to.

• 13:17Mae Martin?

Can you get your friend Andrea to come up to Lake Arrowhead?

• 13:21Fortune Feimster?

She would, well, she lives in Nashville now, but you would love her company.

• 13:26Tig Notaro?

We met her. We hung out with her in Nashville.

• 13:28Fortune Feimster?

Y'all met her at the Ryman.

• 13:29Tig Notaro?

  She's great.

• 13:30Fortune Feimster?

But, um, yeah, it was like, you know, one of those days when you're like, you're both like on the same page. You're like, we don't want to be on our phones. We want to be in the lagoon for, we got massages on a float in the water.

• 13:42Tig Notaro?

It's like you're in Lake Arrowhead.

• 13:44Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. We got a massage in a, in the water on a float.

• 13:48Mae Martin?

  What?

• 13:49Tig Notaro?

Heard of it the first time.

• 13:51Fortune Feimster?

  I know, but y'all didn't seem impressed.

• 13:53Mae Martin?

Is the masseuse treading water while they massage?

• 13:56Fortune Feimster?

In the water with you and it's, it's just.

• 13:59Tig Notaro?

Are they hanging on to your raft going, oh, oh, hold on.

• 14:02Fortune Feimster?

They're like, turning you around and.

• 14:05Tig Notaro?

Oh, they're standing. They're not treading.

• 14:07Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, they're not treading. That would be hard.

• 14:09Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 14:10Mae Martin?

I wonder how they get the traction to like, like push down without drowning you or pushing you away.

• 14:16Fortune Feimster?

They are magical, sturdy Icelandic women.

• 14:19Tig Notaro?

  Not your circus.

• 14:20Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 14:21Mae Martin?

Not my monkey, not my circus.

• 14:22Fortune Feimster?

That was amazing. And, um, and that we did get reprimanded after our massages because we were floating in the water and we thought everyone had left. We looked around the lagoon and we didn't see anybody. So we started pretending to be Icelandic women.

• 14:40Fortune Feimster?

Who are lesbians and we were going like, I'm going to, I'm going to cut wood. I need root vegetables and we're going to make sweet love by the fire on a, on a pelt and.

• 14:52Tig Notaro?

  And the police came?

• 14:54Fortune Feimster?

No, and, and we didn't know that all these people were being massaged behind us and they had to come over and say. Can you guys please, they said, can you guys please be quiet? And we were like shaking, laughing.

• 15:08Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 15:10Fortune Feimster?

Um, and then we did saunas and dry saunas and cold plunges and masks and scrubs.

• 15:16Tig Notaro?

  Amazing.

• 15:17Fortune Feimster?

Laid by the fireplace, sushi lunch, best time of my life.

• 15:22Tig Notaro?

  Girl, you deserve it.

• 15:23Fortune Feimster?

I mean, best time of my life. But I will give a shout out. If anyone goes to Iceland, here's what I will say. It's super gay friendly there. They are all allies. It like, isn't even a thing. They have gay flags everywhere. It's such a welcoming place. Uh, but there's this travel company, Pink Iceland, that not only do they, um, do travel tours for people, gay and straight, uh, they also, um, put on weddings for people and they have a lot of people come to Iceland who like are from different countries where it's not okay to like, some of their families don't know they're gay or like, it's not okay to be gay where they are. And they will put on these beautiful weddings for them, even if it's just the two of them or two of them and a friend.

• 16:06Fortune Feimster?

This company is, uh, is two lesbians, uh, and a gay man who run it and they have the biggest hearts. They took such good care of us. They're amazing. If you ever go there, look them up. They are the company that will take good care of you. And you saw the Northern Lights, right? I saw the Northern Lights, which is wild. That's the dream. We went to their, they have this, um, their office is, uh, five floors up and we went and, um, we were just chatting with them and they go, oh, they're the Northern Lights. And to the naked eye, it's kind of hard to see them. They're like, it's just like, if you're not familiar with them, but when you take a picture of it, it's like so obvious. It's the Northern Lights and they go, we've had friends visit for years and never seen them.

• 16:52Fortune Feimster?

They're like, it's supposed to be a good omen. That's very auspicious. That's like the Icelandic gods were That's right. smiling on you. This was a very healing trip at a time that I really need to, needed some rest and some healing.

• 17:06Tig Notaro?

  Of course. How great.

• 17:08Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 17:09Tig Notaro?

  Good for you.

• 17:10Fortune Feimster?

Thank you. You're in New York?

• 17:12Tig Notaro?

I am, and I'm terribly uncomfortable.

• 17:15Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, boy.

• 17:16Tig Notaro?

  Hold on.

• 17:19Fortune Feimster?

  Get situated.

• 17:25Tig Notaro?

  Hey, hold on one second.

• 17:26Mae Martin?

I really liked your Icelandic character.

• 17:31Fortune Feimster?

We're going to cut wood. I don't even know. It's like part of German, part Icelandic.

• 17:39Fortune Feimster?

  I don't, I haven't nailed accents, truth be told.

• 17:42Mae Martin?

  I don't agree.

• 17:43Fortune Feimster?

  We know.

• 17:46Fortune Feimster?

In all honesty, when we were doing these Icelandic women characters, I was being a little dirty.

• 17:53Mae Martin?

  Okay, the truth comes out.

• 17:55Fortune Feimster?

  The truth comes out.

• 17:56Mae Martin?

You're saying I'm going to sizzle you.

• 17:58Fortune Feimster?

I can't repeat to you what I was saying.

• 18:00Mae Martin?

  It was that dirty?

• 18:01Fortune Feimster?

It was dirty and we were, we were crying laughing and then got scolded and we're laughing even more because what I was saying was ridiculous.

• 18:15Mae Martin?

Okay, the truth comes out. Now I really want to know what you were saying.

• 18:19Fortune Feimster?

I can't say it on the pod, I can tell you.

• 18:23Mae Martin?

This is like, I got reprimanded at your-

• 18:25Fortune Feimster?

  Text it to me.

• 18:26Mae Martin?

Yeah, text it to me right now.

• 18:27Fortune Feimster?

I mean, I can tell you right now, but Thomas has to beep it or cut it out.

• 18:33Tig Notaro?

  Or plug his ears.

• 18:34Fortune Feimster?

I said, um, I was saying, we're going to cut wood and make vegetables and then I'm going to [BLEEP] you in the [BLEEP].

• 18:47Tig Notaro?

  Fortune, right?

• 18:51Mae Martin?

What I liked, okay, hopefully that's beeped out and you can imagine it, but what I'll say about it is that it was so direct. Like what I, I was anticipating some like-

• 19:01Fortune Feimster?

  They're direct.

• 19:01Mae Martin?

  But it was very direct.

• 19:03Fortune Feimster?

They're sturdy. It's because the lesbians that we were meeting that were in a couple, they loved each other. They've been together for years and were so into each other still. And I, I loved it. So we were saying that the Icelandic, that's how they talk to each other.

• 19:19Mae Martin?

Yeah, I like that. I like that. I think this is, this is the answer for life is to be out of the city, in nature, with, with your sturdy woman, eating root vegetables and.

• 19:31Tig Notaro?

  I'm in the city.

• 19:33Mae Martin?

  You're in New York.

• 19:34Tig Notaro?

Yeah, with my entire family and we've had root vegetables.

• 19:38Mae Martin?

  And, and how were they?

• 19:39Tig Notaro?

Uh, they were great. They were great.

• 19:41Fortune Feimster?

Iceland, Iceland is known for their root vegetables. They don't have many fruits there.

• 19:45Mae Martin?

Yeah, they have to grow everything in greenhouses, basically, right?

• 19:48Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, they don't have the eat your morning fruits song because they don't have a lot of fruits.

• 19:52Mae Martin?

Do you think they sing eat your morning roots?

• 19:55Fortune Feimster?

Roots. Eat your morning roots. Good one, babe.

• 19:59Tig Notaro?

  Morning roots.

• 20:00Fortune Feimster?

  Morning roots.

• 20:02Tig Notaro?

  Morning roots.

• 20:03Fortune Feimster?

Y'all know how much I love sitting in water.

• 20:06Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, I heard. Yeah.

• 20:07Fortune Feimster?

For hours at a time, but in Iceland, you, it's so common. Like that's part of their culture is just being in water and being in saunas. And I love all of this.

• 20:17Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 20:17Fortune Feimster?

And their water comes from the, from their, like it's natural.

• 20:23Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 20:23Fortune Feimster?

So they're, they're like, uh, yeah, it's geothermal and it's hot and their water bills are like non-existent there.

• 20:30Mae Martin?

  That's another good reason.

• 20:32Tig Notaro?

I'll challenge you to a hot tub, uh, sitting competition.

• 20:35Fortune Feimster?

Really? Cause I could sit in a hot tub for hours.

• 20:38Tig Notaro?

Same, uh, same. I, my family is blown away. I, I will sit alone in a hot tub for four hours.

• 20:46Fortune Feimster?

  Same.

• 20:46Tig Notaro?

And just, and just stare off and think and do nothing. And Stephanie will be like, are you okay? And I'm like, I'm great.

• 20:56Fortune Feimster?

Same bud. I could sit forever.

• 20:59Mae Martin?

I'm picturing like the sun goes down, everyone's in bed and just looking out the window and seeing your little silhouette tag in the hot tub, just contemplating life and.

• 21:08Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 21:09Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 21:10Tig Notaro?

And sometimes barely even having a thought at all.

• 21:13Fortune Feimster?

I think you would love Iceland.

• 21:15Tig Notaro?

I have wanted to go for years.

• 21:18Fortune Feimster?

You can like just rent a cottage there that and it comes with a hot tub and a sauna. Come on. Go look into it.

• 21:25Tig Notaro?

  And a root vegetable.

• 21:26Fortune Feimster?

Get in touch with Pink I- Pink Iceland. Those ladies would give you so much great information. They're incredible.

• 21:32Tig Notaro?

  All right.

• 21:33Mae Martin?

Tig, what are you up to in New York?

• 21:35Tig Notaro?

Um, we are just traveling, traveling along, a little family. Um, we went to the Yankees game last night.

• 21:43Mae Martin?

That's huge for Max and Finn, right?

• 21:45Tig Notaro?

Yes, yes, it was massive. Um, and some friends of ours with really, really spectacular seats, um, hooked us up and they had, I mean, one of the best nights and days of their lives because they got to go to batting practice. They got to be down on the field with the players.

• 22:07Fortune Feimster?

  Whoa.

• 22:08Tig Notaro?

It like, it was, the chef cooked us like our own vegan men- personal menu.

• 22:15Fortune Feimster?

  What?

• 22:16Tig Notaro?

It, it was, and the chef.

• 22:18Fortune Feimster?

  Fancy friends.

• 22:19Tig Notaro?

It was so over the top and it was so generous of our friends to give us these tickets.

• 22:26Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 22:26Tig Notaro?

And, um, anyway, and we're gonna go see Wicked.

• 22:30Fortune Feimster?

  Aww.

• 22:30Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and, uh, there's a vegan restaurant that we've been excited to try out here. Uh, so we're gonna go to that.

• 22:39Mae Martin?

How do Max and Finn show their excitement? Like at, at a baseball game like that where they're, it's like their dream experience? Are they like chatty or are they kind of stunned, wide-eyed like?

• 22:48Tig Notaro?

  Well,

• 22:52Tig Notaro?

they're very chatty, just in general. They're very, they're not shy kids and so a lot of people comment on how they seem like little men because, you know, Finn has all of his stats and he knows the history of all the different stadiums and, and, uh, so somebody will say something casually like, "Oh yeah, you like the whatever? Well, my team is this." And he's like, "Oh yeah, well, you know, now they got that, uh, bigger budget and then they use their money on blah, blah, blah, pay player." And so that really, uh, you know, and the guy's like. Wow, yeah, that's true. I don't know if they got a bigger budget. I don't know the terminology

• 23:33Tig Notaro?

or how to talk like that. But, um, but yeah, they, when we were at the restaurant, they were talking to everybody near us and our waitstaff and, you know, they're just, they're just very engaged.

• 23:46Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 23:47Tig Notaro?

Is, is what I will say.

• 23:49Mae Martin?

Can you imagine if you went back in time and, and I told you, like, your future kids that haven't been born yet, they're gonna be these two twin boys who are baseball aficionados and love to chat. Like, it's so specific and you can't predict those things, what kids will be into and what they'll like.

• 24:07Tig Notaro?

It's so wild. And it's also so wild that my life is baseball and sports all the time. Like, and they're on travel teams. So like, my weekends, when I'm home, I'm driving with Stephanie and Max and Finn everywhere. And we're gone every weekend. And we're sitting in bleachers. And then during the weekdays, we are at baseball practice. And when we're home, we're watching baseball and we're, it's a lot.

• 24:38Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, my nephew is on the travel baseball team and all my brother and his wife do is travel.

• 24:45Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it's, it's really something. But, you know, it's like, there's definitely days where you're like, oh, my gosh, I do not feel like going to baseball practice or a baseball game three hours away or whatever. But really, it's like, pretty great that they are interested and out doing stuff, you know?

• 25:08Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 25:08Tig Notaro?

Uh, that's the really positive thing. And we, we also, we were, we just came from Denver. We went to Andrea's, Andrea Gibson's memorial, which was at this place, it, it used to be called the Mercury Cafe.

• 25:25Mae Martin?

  Mm hmm.

• 25:25Tig Notaro?

And it's been around for decades. And it is, it, it's been the heart of artists in Denver.

• 25:33Mae Martin?

  Mm hmm.

• 25:34Tig Notaro?

Painters, poets. Musicians, comedians, people just always going there, having food, performing, watching others perform. And it's where Andrea first started poetry. It's now called The Pearl, but it is, they haven't really changed it a bit. And it's just so, such an incredible place. And LA and New York and so many places are known for their artists and creativity. But I'm telling you, the people I came up with in Colorado are some of the most incredible, incredible artists.

• 26:16Tig Notaro?

And Andrea being one of them. And it was so beautiful because there was a private memorial at the Mercury, or as people call it, the Merk, at the Merk. Different friends spoke and then they opened the doors. And it was open to the public. And poets from every corner of everywhere came to town.

• 26:45Mae Martin?

  That's incredible.

• 26:46Tig Notaro?

And they, and every, it was all night for hours, just different poets doing Andrea's truly greatest hits. And that is what is so wild, is I was sitting there going, oh my gosh, these are hit poems.

• 27:01Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 27:02Tig Notaro?

And, and, and the audience, it was over capacity. They're, you know, saying the poems along with Andrea's friends and other poets that came in town. And it was just really so beautiful. And the talent, I cannot express enough, the talent in not just the poetry world, but in Colorado, in Denver, Boulder, those areas. I just, I'm so proud to, to know these people. And Andrea has made so many tremendous friends.

• 27:40Mae Martin?

I just feel like it's amazing to have a poet like Andrea, like. Breakthrough. I feel like recently, there haven't been a lot of contemporary poets that are, because it used to be like, the beat poets, or in the olden times, poets were the coolest, the most sort of, and

• 27:57Tig Notaro?

Stephanie said the other day, she was like, you know, it's wild, is not many poets are known by name.

• 28:07Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 28:07Tig Notaro?

And she was like, and from now on, Andrea Gibson has become, and will continue to become a poet that you know by name. And it is just phenomenal to me.

• 28:23Mae Martin?

Yeah. The reaction to that episode that we did was so amazing.

• 28:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and, and, oh my gosh, when I walked through, I mean, so many places that I've been, but especially in Denver, and Boulder, and at the Mercury Cafe, also known as The Pearl. Now, people came up to me and just really expressed how appreciative they were that we really got into that, and that it was helpful for their grieving, and so, that just meant a lot. Because it was a very authentic moment that we accidentally deep dove into.

• 29:06Tig Notaro?

So, I really appreciate all of the kind thoughts and words and expressions, and so, yeah. Very handsome community.

• 29:16Mae Martin?

  Very handsome.

• 29:18Tig Notaro?

  Mm-hmm.

• 29:19Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. It's so interesting, like, you know, gathering in that way for this unfortunate situation, but what a magical night that Andrea, Andrea and Andrea's Legacy brought together. Such an amazing

• 29:39Mae Martin?

  Group of people.

• 29:40Tig Notaro?

It was so, it was such a beautiful, beautiful night.

• 29:44Mae Martin?

We should do a show in Colorado. I've never been. I'd love to go and.

• 29:49Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 29:50Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 29:51Tig Notaro?

Oh, my gosh. We would be slammed. We would be slammed.

• 29:57Mae Martin?

We should do it. We should figure it out then.

• 29:59Tig Notaro?

I mean, we should, and it would be incredible to include some poets in the show.

• 30:05Mae Martin?

  Heck, yeah.

• 30:06Tig Notaro?

Anyway, that's what I've been up to and.

• 30:09Mae Martin?

We're all having very healing summers in a way.

• 30:13Tig Notaro?

  Absolutely. Absolutely.

• 30:16Mae Martin?

Except for that hot dog, which I left the, I left the remnants outside because I was hoping it would lure the raccoons.

• 30:24Fortune Feimster?

Oh, you don't want to lure the raccoons in?

• 30:26Mae Martin?

Well, I want to get a photo of a raccoon by the time I leave on my film camera. And I've positioned the cameras like by all the windows in case I see one.

• 30:35Fortune Feimster?

But won't there be like eight of them?

• 30:37Mae Martin?

  I want that.

• 30:38Tig Notaro?

  All the better.

• 30:40Mae Martin?

But the point is, I know it's irresponsible. What if bears come? But the point is, in the morning, not a single animal had touched that hot dog. And it just made me realize that's plastic. There's no real food in that.

• 30:54Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 30:57Fortune Feimster?

That is so funny. Like even the animals are like, no, thanks.

• 31:00Tig Notaro?

  Hard pass.

• 31:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah, they're like.

• 31:03Fortune Feimster?

I have to say, it didn't look like a great hot dog.

• 31:06Mae Martin?

  No, of course not.

• 31:08Fortune Feimster?

I don't know what you did to it.

• 31:09Mae Martin?

I don't know. It's more what I didn't do, like cook it properly or.

• 31:14Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 31:19Tig Notaro?

Oh, my gosh, you guys, this, I, I'm sorry to jump right back really quickly. I just remembered this thing. I, so many people wrote so many incredible, beautiful things, but I just, I keep thinking about Andrea's friend Buddy, who was living with Andrea.

• 31:39Tig Notaro?

In the end, to help, he was an EMT previously, but also an incredible poet. He wrote about how there was this marathon in Boulder that he and Andrea stumbled upon one day. And they were cheering on all of the runners that were trailing behind. And he was saying, like, we had no idea that this was our passion in life was to like cheer on exhausted runners. And the way he wrote this, in fact, I want to reach out to him and get a copy of it. It was so beautiful. But he just told this beautiful story. And in the end, he said, that was ultimately what Andrea did in life was cheer on exhausted runners in this world.

• 32:24Mae Martin?

  Oh, I love that.

• 32:25Tig Notaro?

Oh, my God, it was so beautiful. Anyway, I just had to acknowledge that. It just popped in my mind.

• 32:31Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 32:32Tig Notaro?

It was really, really beautiful. Should we get to our question?

• 32:35Mae Martin?

  Yeah, let's do it.

• 32:36Tig Notaro?

Let's do it. Yeah, why not?

• 32:38Mae Martin?

I'm very excited. Today's question asker, we've wanted to have her ask a question for so long. I'm so excited. She's a comedian, actor, writer, and producer who co-created and starred in Broad City. She also co-created and starred in the TV adaptation of A League of Their Own, which was so good and so steamy. And starred in No Good Deed on Netflix. She also directed my stand-up special, SAP. Abbi Jacobson is asking today's question.

• 33:07Tig Notaro?

  Nice.

• 33:10Speaker 04

  Okay, here we go.

• 33:13Speaker 04

Um, okay, I'm curious. Do you guys feel like you've found like a personal style?

• 33:24Speaker 04

And I'm asking this because like sometimes I see someone, I'm like, God, they just like really tapped into their look and their vibe, and they clearly feel really good and confident in what they're wearing. And, you know, it's like, it's a thing that like exudes from them. Do you guys feel like you have that? And if so, like, what is it? When did you find it?

• 33:48Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 33:50Mae Martin?

  Great question. Personal style.

• 33:53Fortune Feimster?

By the way, the Broad City show that Abby and Alana created and starred in, one of my favorite shows of all time.

• 34:02Mae Martin?

  Yeah, agreed.

• 34:03Fortune Feimster?

It is so funny, to the point where I actually want to go back and start it again and watch it all over again. It may, it used to make me cackle.

• 34:14Mae Martin?

It's so rewatchable. Yeah. It was ridiculous and so good. I think Abby has a personal style. I'm interested to hear her answer, but what do you, I, I think other people looking at the three of us would say we have a very distinct personal style, but I don't know if I feel that, or do you guys feel that?

• 34:35Tig Notaro?

I feel like as far as personal style,

• 34:42Tig Notaro?

  lesbian?

• 34:43Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 34:47Tig Notaro?

I just feel like I always tell.

• 34:50Fortune Feimster?

  Style too.

• 34:51Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I always tell people that if I ever go missing, I'm scared I'll never be found again because I'm like five, five, brown hair, brown, I mean graying and just look like a generic lesbian. I always am surprised when people recognize me because I'm like, how did anybody recognize me? I look like the most generic lesbian wandering around.

• 35:16Fortune Feimster?

No, I don't think you're like generic at all.

• 35:19Mae Martin?

That chiseled jaw. Chiseled jaw, Tom Cruise, wearing kind of um, simple masculine staples, good quality cottons.

• 35:31Mae Martin?

  You know, like a.

• 35:32Fortune Feimster?

  Quality cottons, yes.

• 35:34Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 35:34Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Yeah, and I, I think I, I like earth tones.

• 35:39Mae Martin?

Yeah, you like a brown and a green. That's another reason you wouldn't be found if you were lost. You'd wander off in the forest.

• 35:45Tig Notaro?

Yeah. Yeah, the wild animals are feeding off of my carcass. But anyway, that's my style.

• 35:53Fortune Feimster?

  Better than the hot dog.

• 35:56Tig Notaro?

  Anything but that hot dog.

• 35:59Mae Martin?

I, that giant squirrel that's around here, he could, he could. Eat in one sitting.

• 36:06Tig Notaro?

Now, I, to go back to your meal, in quotes. Why two pieces of, why two Doritos?

• 36:15Mae Martin?

I've also left out the most embarrassing part of the meal, which was that I did have a a sort of date up here who I was trying to impress.

• 36:26Fortune Feimster?

Oh, no, that was the meal for the date?

• 36:28Mae Martin?

  That's what I served her.

• 36:29Tig Notaro?

So it was like a garnish, two Doritos?

• 36:32Mae Martin?

  It was a garnish.

• 36:34Tig Notaro?

  May, that is precious.

• 36:35Fortune Feimster?

  Time to make the pasta.

• 36:37Mae Martin?

I know, because I've been making pasta, like, I don't know, I panicked.

• 36:41Fortune Feimster?

What are we doing having a hot dog date?

• 36:44Mae Martin?

I thought I might look good on the grill.

• 36:46Tig Notaro?

Was this a lady, a man, or a lady, or?

• 36:49Mae Martin?

This is a lady who I thought, I'm gonna just stand and grill these hot dogs that couldn't get the grill working, had to do it in a frying pan.

• 36:59Mae Martin?

Only had these weird flavored chips. They weren't even Doritos. They were like no name brand.

• 37:06Mae Martin?

And then these two little gherkins.

• 37:08Fortune Feimster?

How, but you knew this date was happening?

• 37:12Mae Martin?

Yeah, and then I got overwhelmed with like meal prep. I had a big plan for the meal and then I thought.

• 37:17Fortune Feimster?

  This was prepped?

• 37:19Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I was gonna say, that's overwhelmed.

• 37:22Fortune Feimster?

  This meal was prepped?

• 37:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah, I, I just, I don't know.

• 37:27Tig Notaro?

Someone had to open the bag of Doritos.

• 37:29Fortune Feimster?

  Oh, no.

• 37:30Mae Martin?

I thought it would be a simple and nostalgic, you know, summer meal.

• 37:36Fortune Feimster?

You didn't even steam the buns.

• 37:39Tig Notaro?

Hello, who's to say May didn't steam the buns, you know?

• 37:45Fortune Feimster?

I don't know, maybe you steamed the buns.

• 37:48Mae Martin?

What, what I actually did is I put the buns on top of the toaster. I balanced them on top of the toaster slots. I turned the toaster on, thinking it would toast the buns gently. It burned them black and there was smoke coming off. Then I had to do it again and wash.

• 38:05Tig Notaro?

And so what did this lady eat your offering?

• 38:10Mae Martin?

We picked at it. We, you know, she took a picture of it.

• 38:14Tig Notaro?

Did she have a sense of humor about it?

• 38:17Mae Martin?

  Oh, yeah.

• 38:19Tig Notaro?

Adorable how you prepped for this and this is all I got.

• 38:23Mae Martin?

She was. Suitably appalled, I think, but also it's a good anecdote with the photo evidence of how bleak it was.

• 38:32Tig Notaro?

Did you leave her with a T-shirt that said, "I went on a date with Mae Martin and all I got was this hot dog"?

• 38:39Mae Martin?

Well, I was trying to justify the presentation. I was like, how cool is it that a hot dog can be the main and also a side? Like you got an extra wiener on the side.

• 38:49Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, you did a hot dog and a bun and then a side of hot dog.

• 38:53Mae Martin?

Yeah. Anyway, my personal style is-

• 38:56Fortune Feimster?

Even a burger, even a burger would have been a better.

• 38:59Mae Martin?

  Oh, of course, anything.

• 39:00Tig Notaro?

  Or a charcuterie board.

• 39:01Fortune Feimster?

Like, hot dog falls on the bottom of the barrel list of things to serve on a date.

• 39:08Tig Notaro?

Like, we were at the Yankees game and we didn't even have hot dogs.

• 39:12Mae Martin?

  You had a full meal.

• 39:14Fortune Feimster?

It's like making someone a grilled cheese, which that might have even been better.

• 39:19Mae Martin?

  I love a grilled cheese.

• 39:20Fortune Feimster?

Then you should have done grilled cheese!

• 39:23Mae Martin?

  I know, I know.

• 39:26Fortune Feimster?

You should have done grilled cheese! I don't know, are we allowed to ask? Did you at least smooch? Did you get?

• 39:33Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 39:33Tig Notaro?

Fortune, that's so private. You know, May doesn't give up details like-

• 39:38Fortune Feimster?

I needed to know if this hot dog led to something.

• 39:42Mae Martin?

It was more like the hot dog came at the end of a day of stuff. So it was like, I was exhausted.

• 39:48Fortune Feimster?

  You were worn out.

• 39:49Mae Martin?

I was, we'd run out of time to prep the meal. You know, that was more the situation.

• 39:53Tig Notaro?

Oh, you got the smooching in first?

• 39:56Mae Martin?

Yeah, so if I had more smooch- It wasn't like I needed the meal to seal the deal, you know?

• 40:03Fortune Feimster?

  The deal was sealed.

• 40:05Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 40:05Tig Notaro?

  Before the meal.

• 40:06Fortune Feimster?

You were too exhausted to even make something proper. Got it. Well, that's a different story.

• 40:13Tig Notaro?

And do you want to see this person again?

• 40:16Mae Martin?

  Yeah, listen, off the pod.

• 40:22Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, listen.

• 40:26Mae Martin?

  Personal style, my personal style.

• 40:28Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, back to your personal style, bud.

• 40:32Mae Martin?

Well, I've had this haircut my whole life, except for two years, thirteen to fifteen, when I went high femme, like, grew my hair out. So I feel like I do have a distinctive look, but clothes I really struggled with. And I held on to skinny jeans for a long time after everyone else had moved on. And now I feel like I'm just settling into like, yeah, good, nice jeans, nice, simple things. Anyway, how was that?

• 40:59Fortune Feimster?

  I still wear skinny jeans.

• 41:00Mae Martin?

  That's the most boring answer.

• 41:02Fortune Feimster?

You love a white tee and a black tee and black jeans.

• 41:05Mae Martin?

Yeah, white tee, black jeans. Black tee, blue jeans.

• 41:09Fortune Feimster?

And you definitely have a distinct style with your hair, for sure.

• 41:13Mae Martin?

I'm going back blonder. I'm using Sunen, that spray from the nineties that you, you know, you spray it. This is what I was, my friend said, you're using Sunen, does it work? And I said, yeah, you, it's, you're just spraying bleach on your head. And then I kind of heard what I just said, like, I'm spraying bleach onto my head.

• 41:32Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 41:33Mae Martin?

  That can't be good.

• 41:34Fortune Feimster?

I don't know if you guys saw, you know, we, we received some incredible fan art on the, for the show. Let's see it. And our socials posted some of that. They periodically post this fan art. And all three of our hairs, our hairs, head of hairs, what would you call this? Heads of hair. Heads of hair.

• 41:57Mae Martin?

All three of our heads of hairs.

• 41:58Fortune Feimster?

Hairdos. Was put, was put on a vibrator with ties.

• 42:03Mae Martin?

Oh, I saw this, on a, on a, like a wand. Yes, I saw that.

• 42:09Fortune Feimster?

So I would say we are pretty distinct, because I didn't know who everyone was.

• 42:14Mae Martin?

You knew which vibrator was who.

• 42:15Fortune Feimster?

I know which vibrator was who.

• 42:18Fortune Feimster?

It was just your hair on a vibrator. There it is.

• 42:21Tig Notaro?

  Thomas Marie.

• 42:23Fortune Feimster?

Come vibe with us. It's so funny. Our listeners are so creative.

• 42:28Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, that's good.

• 42:30Fortune Feimster?

So we, yeah, the hairstyles are styling.

• 42:35Mae Martin?

Fortune, you are a fan of a t-shirt.

• 42:37Tig Notaro?

Wait, I have to go back.

• 42:38Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, go back Tig. Don't leave any stone unturned.

• 42:42Tig Notaro?

No, I still wear skinny jeans. What do I do about this?

• 42:46Fortune Feimster?

  Is it a problem, May?

• 42:48Mae Martin?

  How skinny are they?

• 42:49Fortune Feimster?

I don't know. I mean Tig is skinny.

• 42:52Mae Martin?

I think you can pull it off.

• 42:54Fortune Feimster?

I think to Tig they're just called jeans.

• 42:57Mae Martin?

Right. I, I just started getting a lot of flack of people saying you can't wear those anymore. That's, it's a straight leg or, or even if you're boldly hipster.

• 43:08Fortune Feimster?

People are into baggy jeans right now.

• 43:10Mae Martin?

Yeah, so baggy, too baggy. I think you gotta go.

• 43:13Fortune Feimster?

  I don't want baggy jeans.

• 43:14Tig Notaro?

Yeah, what if, what if I just wanna just go ahead and wear the pants I already have?

• 43:19Fortune Feimster?

  I think you can Tig.

• 43:21Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 43:22Mae Martin?

This is what I need to learn from you. It's the way that you own it and are confident about it. It's like people can pick up that I'm like, is it okay that I wear these jeans are still skinny? And then they go, no, you, you gotta change. And I go, okay. But if I just went, hey, I love my jeans, maybe people will be like, where'd you get them? I gotta get some.

• 43:40Fortune Feimster?

I think, I think you owning your own thing will be helpful.

• 43:45Mae Martin?

  Me?

• 43:46Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, I don't really don't care if people like what I'm wearing or not.

• 43:50Tig Notaro?

Yeah, you got your holes covered. That's all that's important.

• 43:52Fortune Feimster?

  I've worn some horrific outfits.

• 43:55Mae Martin?

What did Tig say? Covered. She said you got your holes covered. That's all that matters. But I guess in Adam and Eve times, that's what they, that's all they did, right?

• 44:05Fortune Feimster?

  Covered holes?

• 44:06Mae Martin?

Cover the holes, cover the nips.

• 44:08Fortune Feimster?

Free the nip. Let's see them titties.

• 44:11Tig Notaro?

My son Max wrote a poem the other day called, "Big Feet and One Purple Nipple."

• 44:18Fortune Feimster?

  That's what's up.

• 44:19Mae Martin?

  I'm sorry, what?

• 44:23Tig Notaro?

In Andrea's memory, yesterday was Andrea's, would have been Andrea's 50th birthday. And we were, you know, doing some Andrea-style poetry, but with silly topics. And that's what Max came up with, this big feet and one purple nipple. And then he ended it with y'all, which is how Andrea would do.

• 44:45Fortune Feimster?

I think Andrea would have loved that.

• 44:47Tig Notaro?

Absolutely. I let Meg know and she was thrilled.

• 44:50Mae Martin?

  Oh.

• 44:51Tig Notaro?

  Any hootles.

• 44:52Mae Martin?

  Do squirrels have nipples?

• 44:54Tig Notaro?

Oh, Thomas, can you Google, please?

• 44:59Mae Martin?

What if it said squirrels have one big purple nipple?

• 45:02Speaker 05

  Yes, they have nipples.

• 45:04Fortune Feimster?

Thank God. Thank God we got to the bottom of that.

• 45:06Tig Notaro?

  So what's your style, Fortune?

• 45:08Mae Martin?

Well, yeah, because you wear a lot of T-shirts with phrases on them.

• 45:12Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, look at this. Des Moines, hell yeah.

• 45:16Tig Notaro?

  Okay, I love Iowa.

• 45:19Fortune Feimster?

This is just, someone from Des Moines gave me this shirt and it's super comfortable and therefore I wear it.

• 45:26Tig Notaro?

  That's your style.

• 45:27Fortune Feimster?

  That's my style.

• 45:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, you wear what fans send.

• 45:31Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, as long as it's, as long as it's comfortable. If it's a scratchy, you know those thick, scratchy tees? Uh huh, I don't wear those.

• 45:39Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 45:40Fortune Feimster?

Right. So if anyone gives me one of those, thank you, but I'm not gonna wear it. But if it's like a nice cozy, like, soft cotton tee, that's, I will wear that for sure.

• 45:52Tig Notaro?

We should come up with some weird thing to put on the T-shirt because we know you'll wear a free comfortable T-shirt.

• 45:59Fortune Feimster?

I don't care what it says. It says, "Des Moines, hell yes."

• 46:01Mae Martin?

Is that part of the, because you're, you're good with money, do you like, do you like shopping or not like it? And you're just like, so it's easier to wear?

• 46:10Fortune Feimster?

I mean, I will say, I have, I have in the last year really been enjoying wearing suits.

• 46:17Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 46:17Fortune Feimster?

So when I've had to elevate for something, like I hosted the, you know, Jimmy Kimmel Show. And I wore three really fun suits and I really enjoyed that process of, with his, the show stylist. That they each had fun colors and the shirts were like... Vibrant. I like, so I've been enjoying experimenting with suits and colors and patterns. That's been a real treat. Now, I don't wear a suit, obviously, in everyday life. I'm not like Paul Feig. But I, I just, when there's an event or something that requires me dressing up, I'm, I'm really into suits right now.

• 47:01Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, good to know.

• 47:03Mae Martin?

Yeah. I once had a suit made, like tailored, and I thought that would be good. And then he said, do you want to embroider like a secret message to yourself on the pocket inside? And I wasn't prepared for the question. And I, I went, yeah, let it be.

• 47:20Tig Notaro?

  Oh.

• 47:21Mae Martin?

I was so embarrassed when I, this is so corny. Let it be.

• 47:24Fortune Feimster?

  Let it be.

• 47:25Mae Martin?

  In my suit.

• 47:26Tig Notaro?

  Why is that corny?

• 47:27Mae Martin?

I don't know. It's like the most obvious Beatles-y thing. I should have gone, I, you know.

• 47:33Tig Notaro?

  I am the walrus.

• 47:35Mae Martin?

  Yeah, I'm the walrus.

• 47:37Fortune Feimster?

  Cuckoo.

• 47:37Tig Notaro?

  Or cuckoo.

• 47:38Fortune Feimster?

  Coochoo.

• 47:39Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 47:39Fortune Feimster?

  Cuckoo coochoo.

• 47:41Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 47:41Fortune Feimster?

  I said cuckoo caroo.

• 47:43Tig Notaro?

  Really? You say cuckoo caroo?

• 47:46Fortune Feimster?

And I listen to the Beatles very much.

• 47:48Tig Notaro?

  Okay, clearly.

• 47:49Fortune Feimster?

Um, but yeah, my style is just, uh, being comfortable.

• 47:53Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 47:53Fortune Feimster?

Where to take is being lesbian. I'm being comfortable. And, uh,

• 47:58Mae Martin?

  Same deal.

• 47:59Fortune Feimster?

And my hair, like you're, like you said, my, my hair has been this style and cut for probably twenty-three years.

• 48:08Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 48:09Mae Martin?

I like how specific you're like.

• 48:10Tig Notaro?

  You're keeping track of it.

• 48:11Mae Martin?

  Roughly twenty-three.

• 48:11Fortune Feimster?

It was like around, around college.

• 48:14Tig Notaro?

Twenty-three and a half years I've been having this.

• 48:16Fortune Feimster?

I discovered late, my hair was trying, kind of was a triangle a little bit in high school. And then I learned about layers.

• 48:27Tig Notaro?

Wait, did nobody else around you know about layers?

• 48:30Fortune Feimster?

No, nobody told me. Hey, girl. It was like Gilda Radner's character.

• 48:36Mae Martin?

Triangle head, a thick triangle head.

• 48:39Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, and, uh,

• 48:40Tig Notaro?

  Amazing.

• 48:41Fortune Feimster?

We'll discover, once I discovered layers, I was like, I like this. Let's stick with it. But like, what else would my hair even be? I don't, it's just.

• 48:49Tig Notaro?

  Pig tails.

• 48:50Fortune Feimster?

It's so like what it is, you know?

• 48:53Mae Martin?

  Curly hair is hard, right?

• 48:55Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, people straighten it. I look insane.

• 48:58Mae Martin?

Well, I'm picturing your character Brenda has straight hair, right?

• 49:02Fortune Feimster?

  She does. That's a wig.

• 49:04Mae Martin?

  That's a wig, right?

• 49:05Fortune Feimster?

Cause I was, I was straightening it, straightening it to do that character. And I was like, this is not gonna fly. I cannot do this every time I do this character. So I just got a wig.

• 49:16Mae Martin?

I wonder if any of us have like a big style makeover in our future, or have we landed pretty much where we're at?

• 49:23Tig Notaro?

  Oh, I know I don't.

• 49:25Fortune Feimster?

Like if someone comes and looks very different.

• 49:28Mae Martin?

  But like, also.

• 49:30Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, I think Tig's done.

• 49:31Tig Notaro?

  I'm done.

• 49:32Fortune Feimster?

I'm just getting more gorgeous as I, as the older I get. So that I can't help.

• 49:37Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 49:38Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 49:41Mae Martin?

  No, you are. Sorry.

• 49:44Tig Notaro?

  That's a sincere, yeah.

• 49:46Mae Martin?

I wonder, um, like in the old days, like in the sixties, people wore such colorful, fun things. And now it feels like pretty normcore.

• 49:55Fortune Feimster?

I just love that, of all people weighing in on style, us. I mean, we are handsome. We're so handsome for sure.

• 50:04Mae Martin?

  Influencers.

• 50:07Tig Notaro?

  Wearing t-shirts.

• 50:08Fortune Feimster?

On our, our, um, picture for our podcast, we do look very handsome.

• 50:14Tig Notaro?

  Yes, we do.

• 50:15Mae Martin?

So when we. We were feeling ourselves that day.

• 50:16Fortune Feimster?

When the three of us actually try, we, we can really turn it out.

• 50:22Tig Notaro?

My hair's looking way grayer than when we first started the podcast. Should I dye my hair?

• 50:29Mae Martin?

No, don't dye it. You're rocking it.

• 50:31Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 50:32Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, I like your hair.

• 50:34Tig Notaro?

  Okay, alright, everyone calm down.

• 50:36Mae Martin?

I think if you dyed it, it would be like a solid block color. And this has many dimensions.

• 50:42Tig Notaro?

Well, I just, I'm having the, these moments where I, and I've talked about this before, how, you know, working with different actors, they've clearly had botox or different work done. And, and I just thought, wouldn't it be fun if I just showed up with my hair dyed botox in my forehead and got my teeth dyed bleached white?

• 51:04Mae Martin?

  My teeth dead.

• 51:06Tig Notaro?

Whatever. But get my, my teeth bleached. My teeth dyed.

• 51:15Tig Notaro?

Purple teeth. I just thought it would be so funny to show up with just dark hair, white teeth and botox in my forehead.

• 51:23Mae Martin?

And like lip filler and cheekbone.

• 51:26Tig Notaro?

Oh, I would love to see you with a little bit of this. No, nothing too extreme, but just something where I'm kind of keeping up, you know, with. With Kim Kardashian?

• 51:39Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 51:41Tig Notaro?

I'm always trying to keep up with that one. You should something about big old ass.

• 51:48Tig Notaro?

  Get an ass implant. Yes.

• 51:54Tig Notaro?

You never know. I have a pretty good idea. Yeah, you feel, you feel like you're set. So, uh, should we hear? Dumpster tits over there is set. Don't call me that. Um, should we hear what Abby has to say?

• 52:10Mae Martin?

  Yes, please.

• 52:11Speaker 04

Okay. I, I, I'm going to answer the question May, May told me I can't answer the question, which I didn't realize until now. Um, I think I asked this question because I'm really curious when people find this, their style, because I struggle with it and sometimes I feel like I got it. And sometimes I'm like, what the fuck did I, what was I wearing there? What was I thinking? You know?

• 52:40Mae Martin?

  Hmm.

• 52:41Speaker 04

I think the moments, I'm so sorry, I'm like truly like walking around New York. The moments where I felt most confident were like when I stick to like a classic sort of basic and when I've sort of found a uniform for myself. Oh, I'm rambling. I don't know if I have it. I think this is a never ending question and something that is sort of always evolving as we change because like our styles change and like the way we, we feel most comfortable.

• 53:12Speaker 04

  And confidence changes, right?

• 53:15Tig Notaro?

  Whoa.

• 53:15Speaker 04

So did I ask a question that can't be answered? I'm sorry.

• 53:20Fortune Feimster?

It is always evolving and I'm glad she didn't get run over by a car.

• 53:24Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 53:25Mae Martin?

That felt like an episode of Broad Cities.

• 53:27Fortune Feimster?

It did feel like that, yeah.

• 53:28Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 53:29Fortune Feimster?

I definitely have gone back and seen pictures online that I'm horrified by what I'm wearing.

• 53:36Mae Martin?

  Mm hmm.

• 53:36Fortune Feimster?

I know I went through a sweater vest phase. That wasn't great. Yes, and I went through a vest phase. That wasn't great.

• 53:43Tig Notaro?

What was the other one that wasn't great?

• 53:45Fortune Feimster?

  Sweater vests and vests.

• 53:47Tig Notaro?

Vests are great. Sweater vests are great, said the one that dresses like a lesbian.

• 53:53Fortune Feimster?

There was a period of time where my T-shirts were a little too short.

• 53:57Mae Martin?

I like a cropped tee. I want it.

• 54:00Fortune Feimster?

I'm not supposed to be wearing a cropped tee.

• 54:03Mae Martin?

  Supposed. What is supposed?

• 54:05Tig Notaro?

Were you wearing a cropped tee to like pick up a dude? Were you like, hey? Was it in those days?

• 54:12Fortune Feimster?

  Me?

• 54:13Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 54:14Fortune Feimster?

I was never picking up dudes.

• 54:16Tig Notaro?

But when you thought you were straight, is that when you were wearing like?

• 54:19Fortune Feimster?

They certainly didn't want me in a cropped tee.

• 54:22Tig Notaro?

But I'm saying, is that why you were wearing one?

• 54:25Fortune Feimster?

No, I wasn't purposely wearing a cropped tee. I wore T-shirts that were just too short. It was an accident.

• 54:33Tig Notaro?

  Okay.

• 54:34Fortune Feimster?

It wasn't like I wasn't like, it wasn't like this. It was like just shy of my belly. Like, my belly was poking out.

• 54:42Tig Notaro?

We're all doing our best, you know?

• 54:45Fortune Feimster?

So, yeah, I don't love to Google myself from the past because some of those outfits. Especially, and on red carpets too, where I knew my picture was being taken, I looked horrible.

• 54:56Mae Martin?

It's good to have a couple of friends who are brutally honest with you and I, I was about to do a red carpet for my, my friend's show and I was with her and she said, is that what you're wearing? And it was a big swing, like a kind of Harry Styles-esque like floral jacket. And I was like, no, you're right. This is insane. And then just wore a white T-shirt. Felt much better.

• 55:18Fortune Feimster?

  See, back to your style.

• 55:20Tig Notaro?

I was on, I was on a red carpet with Reese Witherspoon one time and she is really good at giving me a hard time. And I happen to be wearing a long, black coat on the.

• 55:36Tig Notaro?

And she turns while we're being interviewed and points out cat hair all over my um black jacket. She's like, is this cat hair? And I was like, probably, yes, it probably is.

• 55:50Fortune Feimster?

  From Kitty City.

• 55:51Tig Notaro?

Yeah, Kitty City made its way out here.

• 55:55Fortune Feimster?

Well, our podcast is all about handsome being whatever it is to you.

• 56:01Tig Notaro?

  That's right, Fortune Marie.

• 56:03Fortune Feimster?

Handsome is in the eye of the beholder as well. You're handsome to people for different reasons and you're handsome to yourself for different reasons. And your style can be whatever it is you want, as long as you feel good.

• 56:16Tig Notaro?

  Thanks, Uncle Fortune.

• 56:18Fortune Feimster?

That's right. That's what being handsome is.

• 56:20Tig Notaro?

Yeah, we're a handsome trio and um.

• 56:24Mae Martin?

  Thanks, Abby, for the question.

• 56:27Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, thanks, Abby. We're all very confused about our own styles, even Abby.

• 56:33Mae Martin?

That's what it seems like. I will say I was at Abby's wedding and she looked stunning in what she chose to wear. And weddings are hard. Um, yeah, and I always think Abby looks very stylish. It's the classics.

• 56:45Tig Notaro?

It's, yeah, it's interesting when you, when you see that um certain people that you think look great doubt how they look.

• 56:55Mae Martin?

  I know.

• 56:56Tig Notaro?

You're like, ah, you look like a million bucks, kid. You look like a million bucks. Yeah, I look like a million bucks, kid. Oh, well, that was a delightful episode. Amazing.

  Getting pumped for that.

Yeah, the trailer looks so good.
