Welcome to the handsome pod. I went, I, I came in strong. I'm one of your hosts, Mae Martin. What a true honor to be joined by the two amigos Tig. Oh, I, I almost said your name.

• 2:33Tig Notaro?

Well, it's true. That is my name.

• 2:35Fortune Feimster?

You just tell us, tell people who we are.

• 2:41Tig Notaro?

  Thomas on the knobs.

• 2:42Fortune Feimster?

  Welcome to the handsome pod.

• 2:45Tig Notaro?

Is that okay to say, Thomas on the knobs?

• 2:48Mae Martin?

  Thomas on the knobs.

• 2:49Fortune Feimster?

  Sure.

• 2:52Mae Martin?

How are you guys? Oh, man.

• 2:54Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, it's been a, it's been a, it's been a.

• 2:58Fortune Feimster?

It's been a, it's been a year so far. We have been dealing with a lot already in 2025. And many people have, especially in our Los Angeles area.

• 3:11Mae Martin?

I know. And the three of us haven't been together since the fires. We've been keeping in touch, checking in, but, but.

• 3:18Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 3:18Mae Martin?

  How are you holding up?

• 3:20Fortune Feimster?

We're good. You know, I think that, God, that the fires as of when we're taping right now, not as of when this is airing, um, are not fully put out yet. Um, but much more contained, but there was a good, um, gosh, how long has it been? Two, a week and a half?

• 3:40Tig Notaro?

  It's been 10, 11 days, 11 days.

• 3:43Fortune Feimster?

Days of just pure anxiety and tension and fear and, um, devastation for all the people who've lost their homes in Altadena and Pasadena, Malibu, Palisades. I mean, been heartbreaking.

• 4:00Mae Martin?

Yeah, the speed that it happened and having friends who get, you know, you get the evacuation notice and then three hours later, your whole house is gone. It's like the, it's really frightening and it's been absolutely wild. And it got pretty close to your house, right Fortune? Like you could see it raging.

• 4:18Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, there were two nights that were, I mean, listen, we're totally fine and lucky. There were two nights. It was really dicey. I started getting notifications from this app, WatchDuty, that everyone's been glued to. And saying like, it was coming towards the 405. And I went to get gas in our car and when I came home, I saw a lot of red in the sky. So I ran up to our balcony and just on the mountain right here, there was fire everywhere. And I was like, if that comes over this ridge, we're done. We're done. This whole area is done. And so Jackson and I started packing.

• 4:59Fortune Feimster?

And I just kept watching it, watching it. But what happened on the original nights of the the main fire is that the winds were like 100 miles an hour. It was unprecedented winds that you can't control anything. Luckily, on this night, the winds were not like that. So I watched the the planes come in one after another after another and drop water and you could see it over hours going down, down, down. They weren't able to have that aerial help those original nights and that is what makes the difference. So thank God for our firefighters and all these people that are fighting the fire. They, I watched it in real time, them save

• 5:42Fortune Feimster?

like the entire valley from that, those efforts.

• 5:47Tig Notaro?

I can't even, I mean, I can imagine. I mean, I saw your picture, but seeing fire on the ridge like that.

• 5:57Mae Martin?

The smoke in the air and the heat and yeah. Are you good in a crisis? Like, did you learn like that adrenaline when you're like, like, it's so rare that you're in that situation?

• 6:09Fortune Feimster?

Yeah. I was more calm than I thought I would be. It was just a matter of staying on top of it. The hardest thing for a lot of the people that lost their homes and some people didn't make it out is, you know, like you said, they had minutes to evacuate. Because everyone's like, oh, why didn't you, you know, do this or why didn't you do that? I mean, these people are literally minutes. Getting in a car, getting out of there. So I was just trying to. Watch the fire on the app, watch it on the ridge, just being aware.

• 6:40Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 6:41Fortune Feimster?

And having like a plan. And so many people were like, the city was so amazing. Every, all these friends were texting and looking out for each other and.

• 6:51Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 6:52Fortune Feimster?

What do you need? And are you good? And like, you know, LA gets a bad rap for no one caring. And man, people kept showing up for everybody.

• 7:02Mae Martin?

Mm hmm. But that first night with the winds and I, I was about to do an improv show with Stephanie in Atlanta. So we were like, let's all get meet up before the show. We'll meet at this restaurant. And we got there and there was a power outage and I just had not been aware of the Santa Ana winds as a thing. I just didn't know about them. And, and there was this power outage and the waitress was like, I'm sure it'll come back in a minute. And it was like, like the vibe was weird. And then like, then we look outside and there's a, an electricity pole just like swaying in the wind. Like it could fall at any minute on the buildings and there's a kind of sense of panic. And Stephanie's like, huh, I'm just texting with Tig. And then she's like, a tree fell on our house and our, like on our.

• 7:44Mae Martin?

And I was like, what? And then it, it just like the, we were like, we're all going to go our separate ways and go home.

• 7:49Tig Notaro?

And yeah, well, she, we were on the phone on her way to, um, meet up with you in Atlanta. And it was just a normal conversation, like, let me call you from the car. And, um, and we're talking and then my next call from her is, oh my God, there was a powder out, a power outage. And there are light posts about to.

• 8:12Mae Martin?

  Crush the comedy man. Yeah.

• 8:14Tig Notaro?

Yeah. And then we get a, a text that that tree, I mean, it's so massive. This eucalyptus tree, it is so massive. And yeah, that was just the very beginning of it. And, um, and the tree's still there.

• 8:30Mae Martin?

  And all the traffic lights.

• 8:32Tig Notaro?

Anybody's concerns right now is a down, is a tree is down.

• 8:36Mae Martin?

Yeah. Yeah. And then so, so you were in Toronto and that must've felt so helpless and.

• 8:41Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 8:41Mae Martin?

  Terrifying.

• 8:43Tig Notaro?

It was and you know, I was aware and I was watching the fires from Toronto and I understood the distance from our house. So, but I was watching and then, yeah, the sunset fire started, which was roughly three miles from our house. And then my kids were having some anxiety and then Stephanie's there having to wrangle three cats. It's not like a dog or you snap your finger and the dog comes, you know, the cat is, we have three scurrying around the house, doing whatever they want, whenever

• 9:22Tig Notaro?

they want. And so it was very emotional for me. I, I called the production and um, just said, I, there's no world I can be in another country, on the other side of, you know, on the east coast in another country, while there's a fire, a couple of miles away from our house with my kid. It was after their bedtime. They were so disoriented and confused and, and, and just to go back to production, they were so, so compassionate. The executive producer said, Tig, I can hear your soul and your voice. Give me five minutes and

• 10:04Tig Notaro?

we'll get this confirmed for you to go home. And I was, it was so emotional and touching. And I flew home and man, the second I walked in the door, the hugs that I got from my family and that trip home, I think was one of my greatest times spent with my family. It was so special. But we drove Max and Finn to show them, um, you know, where the fire was to give them perspective. So they, because they were like, is our house gonna burn down? And, and you know, even as an adult, you feel that, even if you're watching the news, you're like, are we gonna burn? And then, you know, then think about a child

• 10:49Tig Notaro?

who has no perspective about where these fires are, what is gonna happen. Um, but yeah, we gutted our house like crazy. I mean, with bedding and clothing and toys and stuffed animals, food, and did our deliveries and distribution. I think that was also good.

• 11:10Tig Notaro?

Um, for Max and Finn too, to, to be a part of trying to help.

• 11:15Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 11:16Tig Notaro?

  You know?

• 11:16Mae Martin?

And all those cliches are true about making you realize what's important and, you know, feel grateful for the people and, you know.

• 11:26Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 11:27Mae Martin?

I ended up in, um, well, I had like, you know, you call up your ex, you have apocalypse sex. Then you go, then I got out of town.

• 11:36Tig Notaro?

  Wait, you do?

• 11:37Mae Martin?

  Yes, you must.

• 11:38Tig Notaro?

  You got fortune.

• 11:40Mae Martin?

Yeah. You got a thing, it's all, it's all going down.

• 11:43Tig Notaro?

  Wait, you do?

• 11:44Mae Martin?

Okay, let me write this down.

• 11:48Tig Notaro?

  Apocalypse sex.

• 11:50Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 11:50Tig Notaro?

Uh, but you know, because some of the.

• 11:52Mae Martin?

  Step one.

• 11:54Tig Notaro?

Step one. Apocalypse sex. And what does that look like? Is it, is it?

• 12:00Mae Martin?

It's happy, is it sad, is it intense? It's sort of all three. It's like, it's like, you know, this is our last day on earth.

• 12:08Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 12:08Mae Martin?

Let's make it count. I mean, that's just an extension though of like realizing who's important to you and what you want to do. Yeah. So, and then I got out of town to Palm Springs with, um, my friend Sabrina and her family. And it was so nice being around kids and her dog and they, they were all in like one hotel room. And, you know, on night one, the baby got a fever and the, and this five year old got an ear infection. They had to go to, I'm just like, I, it was nice to be there for them and, and helping out and babysitting. Oh, I thought you were gonna say it was so nice to have my own room. Oh, yeah. It was my summer home, yeah. Yeah, you know, I always thought I wanted a family and then, but then, uh, it's such a weird surreal thing. Cause all this craziness is going on and then, but also daily life continues.

• 12:53Mae Martin?

And, and, you know, we're, we're not that far from LA. We're in Palm Springs and then we, we took the, at the hotel, there was a drag brunch on the, like a few days into this excursion. And so we took these like six year olds to this drag brunch and it was, it was incredible seeing like the joy of these drag queens who are so funny and were like making the kids laugh and seeing the kids, you know, just the kids were like rivet. It was, I've never seen, it was like they'd seen God, like their, their, their eyes were so big and yeah.

• 13:27Tig Notaro?

  Goddy God.

• 13:28Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah. So.

• 13:31Tig Notaro?

Well, and Thomas, you were you were hunkered down with a newborn.

• 13:37Mae Martin?

  Oh, my God.

• 13:38Speaker 05

Our friends had a baby the Monday, so the day before the fires.

• 13:44Mae Martin?

  Holy.

• 13:44Speaker 05

Their baby was born. And so they were very fast to get a Airbnb and then they had some extra space. So my wife and I joined them there. So it was it was very surreal being with this like newborn baby. I got to hold and then watching like my city burn.

• 14:04Tig Notaro?

  Burn.

• 14:04Speaker 05

And just the contrast was crazy, but there was a lot of joy because of the baby. So it was it was nice.

• 14:12Mae Martin?

  Their first kid?

• 14:14Speaker 05

Yeah, their first kid. Both the grandmas were there. One of the grandmas is like.

• 14:20Tig Notaro?

  Staying with you too?

• 14:21Speaker 05

  Yeah, staying with us.

• 14:22Tig Notaro?

  Incredible. That's incredible.

• 14:24Speaker 05

One of their moms is like a birthing nurse. So she just knew everything about the baby. So like they felt secure to be away from their doctor and stuff because she was there.

• 14:37Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 14:37Speaker 05

And yeah, just getting to hold a newborn baby is like so special.

• 14:42Mae Martin?

But also like it's similar to the pandemic. It's so confusing sorting through the information about what's safe and what's not. And like the air quality and what's and and there's also so much just kind of personal choice about like, what do you feel comfortable with? Like, and it's so confusing to know what to do. And yeah, I feel I feel for people, pregnant people, people with newborns. It's like.

• 15:04Fortune Feimster?

It's an interesting vibe in the city right now because there's a resilience there of like, what do people need? I'm going to do this, show up for people. And there's also a sadness.

• 15:14Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 15:15Fortune Feimster?

That I've that I've seen in the last two weeks of just like people, there's this look in their eyes of kind of like, oh, this just.

• 15:22Tig Notaro?

  It's too much.

• 15:24Fortune Feimster?

For lack of a better word. Yes. And you know, luckily, there's a lot of places in LA that are helping and people are dropping stuff off. But it's going to take a long time for a lot of these people to get on their feet. So.

• 15:38Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 15:38Fortune Feimster?

I think was mentioning helping, uh, also helping places that are helping the animals. There are a lot of animals that were displaced in this and a lot of people that have animals who can't care for them right now, or now that they have to find an apartment or hotel room, they can't have their pets and it affects so many things.

• 15:59Tig Notaro?

There's so many different needs. So many different needs. I was saying before we started recording that of course they care about people and animals and but there was something about seeing this animal hospital that had taken in an owl and a turtle and you know, all of these different, it's not just the family dog and cat with, you know, burnt paws. It's, there's so many different, and when I saw that little turtle in its hospital nook.

• 16:32Mae Martin?

  In his gown.

• 16:33Tig Notaro?

And his little turtle gown. I was like, when I get home, I'm going to the animal hospitals, you know?

• 16:41Mae Martin?

Yeah. Now I want to do a painting of a turtle in a hospital gown.

• 16:45Tig Notaro?

  You've got to.

• 16:46Mae Martin?

I'm still on my animal paintings and that's gotta be one. I haven't done a turtle yet.

• 16:51Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 16:51Mae Martin?

We all need our therapist right now.

• 16:54Tig Notaro?

  What'd you say?

• 16:55Mae Martin?

We all need, I feel all the therapists working overtime right now in LA, like just with everybody. And then the therapists are trying to sort it all out.

• 17:02Tig Notaro?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 17:03Mae Martin?

Yeah. Um, what were you gonna say? Sorry, Stephanie.

• 17:05Tig Notaro?

Oh, oh, oh, Stephanie reached out to me the other day saying, you know, one of our friends who has a newborn baby, they didn't lose their house, but they've, they were evacuated and they can't get back in for at least three months. And so.

• 17:22Mae Martin?

I didn't even think about that.

• 17:24Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 17:24Mae Martin?

What, because it's toxic fumes and, oh my god.

• 17:28Tig Notaro?

So, and they have a dog, a cat, a newborn, and so they, they are moving into our office.

• 17:35Mae Martin?

  Oh, nice.

• 17:35Tig Notaro?

But when Stephanie called and was like, hey, this is going on, I'm like.

• 17:42Tig Notaro?

Yeah, we gotta get that little baby in, in there. We, you know, I mean, of course, I like offered the place to Fortune or whoever needs it, but um, there's something about like, yeah, we gotta get that little baby in there.

• 17:58Mae Martin?

Yeah, get that baby safe and warm.

• 18:00Tig Notaro?

We gotta get that baby in there.

• 18:03Fortune Feimster?

Well, you know, we definitely send love to everybody.

• 18:08Tig Notaro?

  Yes.

• 18:08Fortune Feimster?

Been affected in, in one way or another, just.

• 18:12Mae Martin?

Also, so many people on our social media, so sweet being like, as soon as I heard about the fires, I thought about the handsome pot.

• 18:20Fortune Feimster?

Oh, my God. Cause I was posting here and there, but you guys don't post as much. And so people will be like, what about Tig and May? It's so sweet.

• 18:32Fortune Feimster?

• 21:12Tig Notaro?

Well, first of all, I've been very busy working on the most difficult lines of my entire acting career.

• 21:18Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 21:19Tig Notaro?

But when the fires hit, even though I'm not somebody that posts all the time, I felt a little depressed. Like, I don't scroll too much on Instagram, but I did look at things and it was...

• 21:38Mae Martin?

  So depressing.

• 21:39Tig Notaro?

I just needed to like, remove myself a bit because there was... And not to block it out and ignore it because we're donating, we are, you know, we're doing housing a family, we're doing anything and everything we can. But I just couldn't continue to look at the things on social media.

• 22:06Mae Martin?

Like, in the old days, you'd have to watch, you'd watch the news.

• 22:10Tig Notaro?

  At 5 o'clock?

• 22:11Mae Martin?

Yes, and then you'd turn it off. And now it's, it is constant.

• 22:16Tig Notaro?

Yeah, yeah. But I, so I've been a little more MIA because I had to kind of protect my... Sanity.

• 22:25Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 22:26Tig Notaro?

Um, anyway, but I do appreciate people reaching out and.

• 22:30Mae Martin?

Yeah, thank you. And we'll keep sharing like places to donate and.

• 22:34Fortune Feimster?

And a huge shout out to, again, firefighters.

• 22:38Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 22:39Fortune Feimster?

Any of those pilots, any of the first responders, those people that.

• 22:43Mae Martin?

  The incarcerated firefighters.

• 22:45Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 22:45Mae Martin?

I didn't know that that was a thing and these incarcerated young men who are, you know, getting paid a dollar a day and they're risking their lives. I, we gotta support them.

• 22:56Tig Notaro?

Well, and also, just a side note that blows my mind about firefighters, police,

• 23:06Tig Notaro?

even therapists, your meaning there, day to day, is getting up and walking towards devastation and negativity. And that's what they get up and do every, I mean, of course, there's the charming day when they get a kitty out of the tree and whatever, but like their hard work, I mean, like getting up, you've, you've turned your alarm off and you go towards the negative.

• 23:36Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 23:36Tig Notaro?

It's just, it's so intense and it's like, it takes a very particular person that can, that can go do that.

• 23:46Fortune Feimster?

It's crazy, but there's a, there's a foundation called the California Fire Foundation, the Wildfire and Disaster Relief Fund. You can Google it and that's a good place to support um, a lot of the disaster relief and the actual firefighters and their families. And there's many, many places to donate, you know, the Pasadena Humane Society, the San Gabriel Valley Humane Society, uh, there's many place, many personal GoFundMes, there's, there's so many things.

• 24:15Mae Martin?

Yeah. Also, I think you've said this tag about like world issues and things like it again brings home like. Without fighting climate change, like.

• 24:27Tig Notaro?

None of the other things matter.

• 24:28Mae Martin?

Nothing else matters. This is like, we like, this is so urgent. Yeah.

• 24:32Tig Notaro?

Yeah, you can have all of these political differences and anything, anything on the planet that's going on in personal lives, in politics, and it's like, yes, it's all important. However, if the planet is not intact.

• 24:55Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 24:56Tig Notaro?

  It doesn't matter at all.

• 24:58Mae Martin?

And all of those other issues are going to be exacerbated by natural disasters and things. So, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, it's like, who are we? I always feel like, I don't know what I'm talking about. And how are, you know, in 20 minutes, how are we gonna like, talk about the California fires? But I guess we just have our own experiences and, and I don't know, it's, it's nice talking to people and connecting.

• 25:23Tig Notaro?

And I think it's, yeah, I think people listening can connect and people that don't live in LA have been watching it just every second of it and, and feeling it and.

• 25:35Mae Martin?

I mean, my mom was more scared that I went and had apocalypse sex than she was about the fire.

• 25:40Tig Notaro?

  Oh, you told your mom?

• 25:41Mae Martin?

Well, I said, I'm going to, I'm going to, you know, my ex's house, she went, oh, my God.

• 25:51Tig Notaro?

She goes, I, I know your to do list and apocalypse, and that's number one. So I know what you're up to.

• 25:57Mae Martin?

Yeah, I will say, it wasn't like I was, you know, I went there to, to be safe with someone with a car. I don't have a car and, you know, it was, it was really nice to be.

• 26:07Tig Notaro?

  To have a car.

• 26:08Mae Martin?

  To have.

• 26:13Mae Martin?

  Coming over for your car.

• 26:15Tig Notaro?

Yeah, she's like, I feel like you're using me for my car. You're like, damn straight.

• 26:21Fortune Feimster?

Oh, wow. I'm gonna look at apocalyptic situations very differently now. Well, there's gotta be some silver lining.

• 26:29Tig Notaro?

You know what I realized in all of this too? Um, when I was in Toronto and Stephanie was like trying to pack things.

• 26:37Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 26:38Tig Notaro?

That are important, and maybe this is already a known thing.

• 26:41Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 26:42Tig Notaro?

I was telling Stephanie when I went home. I bet it's good, because what I did was I went around our house and I made a list of what is important to me. And I took a picture of the things and where they're located in our house. And then, uh, just to give her in case something happened when I left. But everything seems to be under control. It feels still like if you haven't done this or haven't thought to do it, seems like it's a good idea to make a list, take those pictures, but also put the things in one place.

• 27:18Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, and make an emergency bag too.

• 27:21Tig Notaro?

Well, and if there's an emergency that you have a closet in your garage or in your basement or in your hallway where you're like, okay, the left side of the closet is go stuff. You know? And if there's ever anything that happens, we know, we just open this closet and pack all that stuff and we're out the door. So you're not scrambling around going, oh, gosh, what's important? Where's my birth certificate? Where are the photo albums, you know?

• 27:50Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah.

• 27:50Tig Notaro?

  Whatever it is.

• 27:51Fortune Feimster?

We got this little pouch a couple of years ago that's supposedly fireproof. I don't know. Where I keep all my like important, I just documents.

• 28:01Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 28:02Fortune Feimster?

So they're all, all that stuff is together in one of those pouches.

• 28:06Tig Notaro?

  Mm hmm.

• 28:07Fortune Feimster?

My crystals. Okay. Strap on. Whoa. I can't be replaced.

• 28:13Tig Notaro?

I'm just trying to keep it light.

• 28:15Fortune Feimster?

  No.

• 28:16Tig Notaro?

  Whoa.

• 28:18Fortune Feimster?

  I'm joking.

• 28:19Tig Notaro?

  No, you're not.

• 28:22Tig Notaro?

  No, you are not.

• 28:23Fortune Feimster?

  Sentimental that one.

• 28:27Tig Notaro?

  Fortune's like, whoa.

• 28:28Fortune Feimster?

Whoa. Are those, is that it? Just crystals and? The strap on?

• 28:36Mae Martin?

No, I'd have some astronaut ice cream. You know, what else?

• 28:40Tig Notaro?

Now, you want to talk about a prepared person?

• 28:43Fortune Feimster?

  Mae Martin.

• 28:44Tig Notaro?

  Mae Martin.

• 28:46Fortune Feimster?

You know what May's doing in the apocalypse? Fucking.

• 28:50Mae Martin?

  Well, I.

• 28:51Tig Notaro?

And then having some ice cream.

• 28:53Mae Martin?

You know, we, we joke and we laugh, but I did think if it was my last day on earth, then I would want to, I would want to be having sex. It's like the most human thing. I don't know.

• 29:06Tig Notaro?

  And having ice cream.

• 29:07Fortune Feimster?

I'd be wanting to eat a cheeseburger.

• 29:09Mae Martin?

Yeah, that too, for sure. Yeah, you just, you know, yeah.

• 29:13Tig Notaro?

  I'd probably have some kale.

• 29:15Mae Martin?

  Kale.

• 29:17Tig Notaro?

I'd go out in a bang.

• 29:18Mae Martin?

You'd stroke a turtle and have some kale.

• 29:21Tig Notaro?

Yeah, it takes probably stroking a turtle and having some last supper kale.

• 29:27Fortune Feimster?

You're stroking a turtle and May's stroking something else.

• 29:34Tig Notaro?

Follow May to the ex-girlfriend's car.

• 29:39Tig Notaro?

And you will also get, did you say outer space ice cream?

• 29:43Mae Martin?

Yeah, I was just thinking about, I don't know why I said that, about non-perishable foods. And I thought astronauts have that freeze dried ice cream.

• 29:50Tig Notaro?

  Oh, astronaut ice cream.

• 29:51Mae Martin?

  It's so tasty. Yeah.

• 29:53Fortune Feimster?

  You think so?

• 29:54Mae Martin?

I, yeah, I remember getting it at the science center in, in Toronto and I liked it. You don't like it?

• 30:00Fortune Feimster?

  Not really.

• 30:00Mae Martin?

It's kind of a weird, weird texture. Yeah.

• 30:03Tig Notaro?

  Guys, good talk.

• 30:04Mae Martin?

  Good.

• 30:08Tig Notaro?

Well, should we get to our questioner today?

• 30:12Mae Martin?

Yes. Can I say this is, I mean, like a foundational comedian for me. Like I'm buzzing that this person sent a question. Today's questioner is a musician, a comedian, an actor, best known for his hilarious parody songs, ranging from Amish Paradise to Smells Like Nirvana to Yoda. And he has sold over 12 million albums, winning five Grammy awards along the way. I saw him, I saw him live in like an arena tour. When I was about 12 and it was like seeing a comedian be a rock star like people were acting like like when he was singing like you know a Michael Jackson song or whatever it was like the actual artist was people were losing their minds and I was like yeah

• 30:56Mae Martin?

he's always been a true hero of pure inane silliness weird Al Yankovic is asking today's question.

• 31:04Tig Notaro?

Or as I like to call him weird Albert.

• 31:07Mae Martin?

Weird, do you know him personally?

• 31:09Tig Notaro?

I do, that's how we got it.

• 31:11Mae Martin?

  Stop.

• 31:12Tig Notaro?

I get a Christmas card from him every year.

• 31:16Mae Martin?

  Stop it.

• 31:17Fortune Feimster?

  Thing knows everybody.

• 31:19Mae Martin?

Oh my god, this whole podcast is just me going, oh my god, they know I exist and you guys being like, yeah, I just text them today, holy shit.

• 31:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, I don't know if his name's Albert, but I love elongating people's names, you know?

• 31:35Mae Martin?

Can you tell him I deeply love him?

• 31:38Tig Notaro?

  He'll hear this.

• 31:39Mae Martin?

  Okay, okay, great.

• 31:40Tig Notaro?

  We'll see to it.

• 31:41Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 31:42Tig Notaro?

  Old Weird Albert.

• 31:43Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 31:44Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, let's hear it.

• 31:46Speaker 06

Hey handsome pod, how you doing? It's your close personal friend, Al Yankovic, and I have a question to posit to you, you can answer it individually and or collectively, but I really want to know, I really want to know, is there one particular scene in a movie that you had a severe physical reaction to? I'm not talking about a movie that touched you deeply or made you think or changed your life, I'm talking about a movie that, you know, made you, made you laugh or cry or throw up or soil your underwear, something that made you flip out. So what is the one movie scene that made you do that?

• 32:29Mae Martin?

  What a great question.

• 32:31Fortune Feimster?

  Wow.

• 32:32Tig Notaro?

It's not, it's not an easy one.

• 32:34Mae Martin?

It's not an easy one. And I will say, just to like gush about him more, I watched UHF a lot as a kid, the Weird Al movie, which I guess is in the 80s or early 90s, but my brother and I knew every line to that movie.

• 32:49Tig Notaro?

  Let's hear some.

• 32:50Mae Martin?

  Oh.

• 32:51Tig Notaro?

Kasia, and Al is listening, okay?

• 32:59Mae Martin?

I said we knew every line to that movie.

• 33:02Tig Notaro?

  Okay, all right, fair enough.

• 33:07Mae Martin?

And then cannot recommend highly enough, if you're a Weird Al fan, the biopic that he made with Daniel Radcliffe playing Weird Al. I don't know what I was expecting, but it was not what I was expecting in the best way. It was so funny that they play it completely earnestly, like that this is a biopic of the greatest artist of our time. And it was incredible. And Dan Radcliffe was amazing.

• 33:32Fortune Feimster?

I haven't seen it. I'll have to watch that.

• 33:33Mae Martin?

It's so funny. Conan O'Brien's in it. It's just ridiculous. Yeah.

• 33:37Tig Notaro?

I feel like Al is one of those people, it's like across the board. So he has so much respect from so many people. And it's so cool to see with such a silly person.

• 33:53Mae Martin?

  I know.

• 33:53Tig Notaro?

Like, the silliness is so overboard.

• 33:58Mae Martin?

It doesn't age because it's just pure silliness. I feel the same way sometimes about Adam Sandler, like his new stuff he's doing. I'm like, I know I'm gonna love it because it's just silly and Conan. And like, it's relaxing.

• 34:11Tig Notaro?

But there's also like a Mr. Rogers vibe about the love that people have. Where people are like, I love Weird Al. Oh, my goodness. You know, you see grown men and you see children and people are like, I love him. And he's just the nicest guy. You know? Oh, yeah.

• 34:30Mae Martin?

Well, when I went to see him at that arena show, I always remember he came out into the audience and he's like sprinting up the aisle in this big arena. And this like 10 year old boy is there and just gets, stands up and steps in front of Al, like into the aisle. So Al's like running up and just stops. And this boy just stands there. And they just have eye contact and stare, have a like staring contact, like he just stares at him. And they just both stand there staring for so long. And it was so funny. And then the kid just goes and sits down. It was great.

• 35:00Tig Notaro?

  Classic Al.

• 35:02Mae Martin?

Oh, man. Okay, visceral reaction. Shit. Because in the old days, when people hadn't seen movies much, you know, and then you hear about people seeing The Exorcist and like passing out. Yes. And like.

• 35:16Tig Notaro?

  Oh, God, Jaws.

• 35:18Fortune Feimster?

People wouldn't go in the ocean for like a while.

• 35:20Tig Notaro?

  Yeah. I mean, Jaws, like.

• 35:23Mae Martin?

Was that visceral for you? Were you like?

• 35:25Tig Notaro?

  I mean, yeah.

• 35:27Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 35:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah. I mean, was it not for you?

• 35:30Mae Martin?

  Uh, yeah.

• 35:32Fortune Feimster?

It scared me, but not in a way where I was like, I'm never going to the ocean again.

• 35:36Tig Notaro?

Well, how old were you when you saw it?

• 35:38Fortune Feimster?

Let me see when it came out. I don't remember.

• 35:39Tig Notaro?

You saw it when it came, cause I don't think you were alive when it came out.

• 35:43Fortune Feimster?

I had a prob- maybe not. Oh, yeah. Nineteen seventy-five. I was not born yet.

• 35:47Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 35:48Fortune Feimster?

  Jaws two is seventy-eight.

• 35:50Mae Martin?

So you, you saw it when it came out, Tig? And were you like, this is the most unsettling primal?

• 35:56Tig Notaro?

Uh, yeah, yeah, yeah. You know, maybe if it came out now, that original version came out now, I'd be like, oh, this is, you know, you kind of can see behind the curtain a bit with, um.

• 36:10Mae Martin?

  No, but the score.

• 36:11Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 36:12Mae Martin?

And the, it is primal, something like a threat that you can't really see in the depths of the unknown. And you're so vulnerable, you're like.

• 36:23Fortune Feimster?

Da na, da na, and it gets faster and louder.

• 36:27Mae Martin?

I wish the score was Fortune's version. Can we make, can we dub over?

• 36:36Tig Notaro?

  And we cut to her.

• 36:37Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 36:40Tig Notaro?

Every time the music kicks in, we cut to Fortune making that face.

• 36:47Tig Notaro?

But yeah, it definitely, it was hard for me to even swim in a pool. I thought for sure when I had my back turned, somebody threw a great white shark in there.

• 36:55Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 36:56Tig Notaro?

  Never did.

• 36:57Fortune Feimster?

  Worst when that happens.

• 36:59Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 37:00Mae Martin?

And wasn't the sequel called Just When You Thought It Was Safe To Get In The Water? That was the tagline.

• 37:07Tig Notaro?

I have a great title. It's just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water, but it's not, cause the sharks are still there. Part two.

• 37:15Fortune Feimster?

I had movies that made me want to do things like.

• 37:18Mae Martin?

  Like what?

• 37:19Fortune Feimster?

A League Of Their Own. Made me want to be on a woman's baseball team.

• 37:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 37:25Fortune Feimster?

And in a house with a bunch of ladies.

• 37:28Mae Martin?

  Right.

• 37:29Fortune Feimster?

Uh, Pretty Woman made me want to be a high-end escort in Beverly Hills.

• 37:33Mae Martin?

  Really?

• 37:34Tig Notaro?

  Did it?

• 37:36Mae Martin?

  Big mistake. Huge.

• 37:38Tig Notaro?

But wait, did it make you want to? Oh, I don't know.

• 37:46Fortune Feimster?

And the jewelry scene, that was iconic, where she goes to reach for the necklace and he shuts the thing and she's like.

• 37:56Mae Martin?

I think we've done that on the pod.

• 37:58Tig Notaro?

  I have really bad news.

• 38:00Mae Martin?

  What?

• 38:00Fortune Feimster?

  What?

• 38:01Tig Notaro?

  I've never seen Pretty Woman.

• 38:03Mae Martin?

Oh, my God. I have bad news, too.

• 38:07Tig Notaro?

  You haven't either?

• 38:08Mae Martin?

  I don't think I have either.

• 38:10Tig Notaro?

Two against one, two against one.

• 38:15Mae Martin?

Well, one guys, come on. A lot of these are like things that you see as a kid that really mess you up. And I was taken to see Jurassic Park in cinemas when I was like, I think I was four or something. I was way too little. And just at the moment where the footprints, like the footsteps come and the water's shaking. And I, and I ran out of the movie theater and I remember standing by myself in the movie and that my dad took quite a while to come out after me. But I was, I think I was four. What year did it come out?

• 38:51Tig Notaro?

That came out in like 1993, I would guess.

• 38:56Fortune Feimster?

That was scary because it was.

• 38:58Tig Notaro?

  Was it 93?

• 38:59Mae Martin?

Was it? Let's see, Jurassic Park, yeah, 93.

• 39:02Fortune Feimster?

It was like silent and then it's like boom, boom.

• 39:05Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 39:06Tig Notaro?

That made a massive impact on me, too. And I, I talked about it in my, um, my animated special, but I worked with children like at a daycare center at one point years ago. And this woman that I worked with that was maybe a little annoying and I didn't pay close attention to things when she talked to me. I was, I mean, if you think I'm out of like.

• 39:36Mae Martin?

  The pop culture loop?

• 39:37Tig Notaro?

Yeah, the pop culture loop. You should have seen me in, when I was 22.

• 39:43Mae Martin?

  Really?

• 39:43Tig Notaro?

So I'm sweeping up the room and the woman that I work with is talking nonstop about these dinosaurs that, you know, scientists have brought back from extinction. And now they're loose, running around, killing people.

• 40:05Tig Notaro?

I missed that it was a movie. And I was like, wait, what? And she was like, yeah, you haven't heard about this? And I was like, no. And she was like, oh, it's called Jurassic Park. And I was like, and so there are actual dinosaurs. And she was like, yeah.

• 40:22Mae Martin?

  This scientist found this amber.

• 40:24Tig Notaro?

And what she explained, it made sense. And I was like, what the hell are we doing just at this daycare center? We gotta get the hell out of here. Um, but I went and saw it after that because I was so fascinated by, um, the story she told me. And, um, and it terrified me, absolutely terrified me.

• 40:45Mae Martin?

It's like a flawless movie too. This isn't a movie, but in Twin Peaks and the great David Lynch just passed away. And there's a couple of David Lynch moments that will stay with me. But Twin Peaks, when you see Bob in the flash, have you, have you seen it?

• 41:01Tig Notaro?

  Uh-uh, I haven't.

• 41:03Mae Martin?

Two against one, it's, it's, that's one of the most affecting and scary and amazing shows. But, uh, the mom of the murdered girl is remembering going into the girl's room. And she's hugging someone and she's, we kind of go into her mind. And she's remembering going into her daughter's room when her daughter was missing. And suddenly in her memory, she sees this man crouched at the end of the bed with long hair. And it's Bob and he starts sort of crawling and she just starts screaming. And I, I still can't like, my whole body even now is like goosebumpy. Like I hate Bob and it's, Bob is so scary. And he was just a guy who worked on set. I think he was a janitor and David Lynch saw him and he had this long greasy hair.

• 41:48Mae Martin?

And cast him as the main villain who doesn't really speak much, but he appears and oh my God, that is visceral. Like if I'm Home Alone and also at the very end of like the final scene of that show, nah, no spoilers. But it's someone who you love. Spoilers decades later. Yeah.

• 42:07Mae Martin?

But Agent Cooper, he's like looking in the mirror and, and then he starts going, where's Annie? Where's Annie? Like, and you go, oh my God, he's bad too. Bob got him too. Anyway, whatever. Things like that.

• 42:18Tig Notaro?

Do you think Bob's still alive?

• 42:20Mae Martin?

  That's a great question.

• 42:22Tig Notaro?

  Thank you.

• 42:22Mae Martin?

He's alive in me and my.

• 42:24Tig Notaro?

  What if he's a listener?

• 42:26Mae Martin?

Oh my God, I don't want to invoke Bob. I don't want to. But, um, The Shining as well, that is the idea of someone that you love trying to kill you and, and changing like that. That really was so scary. Those, those hallways, those corridors. Yeah.

• 42:44Tig Notaro?

I didn't see The Shining either.

• 42:46Mae Martin?

  Don't. It's, I mean, it's amazing, but that's one of the.

• 42:48Tig Notaro?

  Did you see it, Fortune?

• 42:49Fortune Feimster?

  I did, yeah. It's good.

• 42:51Tig Notaro?

  Did it spook you?

• 42:52Fortune Feimster?

I watched it much later in life. If I had watched it younger. I would think it would have.

• 42:57Tig Notaro?

Didn't spook you as an adult?

• 42:59Fortune Feimster?

No, those older scary movies in, in these days, watching them don't really.

• 43:05Tig Notaro?

I know. I watched some Albert Hitchcock movie. What is it? The Window or something?

• 43:11Mae Martin?

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 43:12Tig Notaro?

  Is that what it's called?

• 43:12Mae Martin?

  Rear, Rear Window.

• 43:13Tig Notaro?

  Rear Window?

• 43:16Mae Martin?

  Didn't do it for you.

• 43:17Tig Notaro?

  I wasn't, I wasn't scared.

• 43:19Mae Martin?

Well, sometimes when you watch things that other things have been so derivative of that original thing. But then you watch the original thing and subsequent things have done it scarier now.

• 43:28Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 43:29Fortune Feimster?

Wayne, we're in just in different times. We've been exposed to so much, but.

• 43:33Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 43:33Fortune Feimster?

Back then, that stuff was so transformative. I remember watching the movie Riding in Cars with Boys in college and that one got me good.

• 43:43Mae Martin?

I'm putting it on my list. I've never seen it.

• 43:45Fortune Feimster?

Um, cause I, yeah, I was having some, my, my, I've talked about it before. My mom and I used to have a, a difficult relationship. And as I got older and moved away, it got a lot better. Now we're very close, but. In college, it was pretty fractured and that, that movie got me, got me good.

• 44:07Mae Martin?

Why? What's it about? What's, what, is it about a mother, daughter?

• 44:10Fortune Feimster?

About a mother with just kind of finding. A mother finding herself.

• 44:16Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 44:17Fortune Feimster?

And sometimes, you know, that took priority.

• 44:20Mae Martin?

Mm hmm, mm hmm. So that hit you in the guts?

• 44:23Fortune Feimster?

Hit me. I also get really, anytime I watch a movie where um a mother or a grandmother or any older woman dies of cancer, the it kills me. And I think that goes back to my grandmother. So I will, I will sob like, like a baby. And it doesn't matter what movie it is, if if it's a woman of a certain age dying of cancer, I just.

• 44:54Mae Martin?

I cry when men break down in movies like, like Matthew McConaughey in Interstellar when he cries, or like Tom Cruise. Anytime he cries, it gets me.

• 45:04Tig Notaro?

In um, terms of endearment, uh, when um, Deborah Winger is crying on her deathbed. And saying to her son, who is this like, probably twelve year old kid? And he's like, yeah, no, I know. I don't care. You know, that kind of vibe?

• 45:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 45:25Tig Notaro?

And she's just crying and she's like, listen to me. I know you love me. And when I die, don't beat yourself up. I know you love me, you know?

• 45:38Mae Martin?

  My god.

• 45:39Tig Notaro?

  And he's just like.

• 45:41Mae Martin?

Oh, but you can tell he cares.

• 45:43Tig Notaro?

He cares and he can't express it because he's got such a chip on his shoulder.

• 45:47Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 45:48Tig Notaro?

And her performance, I mean, it gives me goosebumps. She's so great.

• 45:54Mae Martin?

Can you remember the first movie that like, gave you a boner? Like, like, like, that's a visceral.

• 46:02Fortune Feimster?

That's a visceral. Apocalyptic movie, what?

• 46:06Mae Martin?

That's a visceral, physical reaction. And for me, it was Rocky Horror Picture Show. I was five when my parents showed it to me. I was five and I've talked about this before, but it was the moment that Frank Enfertor throws that cape off and it's and Tim and he's in that corset and fishnets and starts striding down the hall and and his hips moving and these high heels and I I don't I've never been the same. I've never been the same.

• 46:33Mae Martin?

Like, and then there's one particular moment where Rocky, the creature he's created is he's singing something and then Frank Enfertor like runs his finger down Rocky's stomach like and and Rocky has two belly buttons and runs it down to like the edge of his underwear. And I was like, well, I'll think about that tonight. I don't know why, but I'll store that moment.

• 46:54Tig Notaro?

I'll think about that tonight and forever.

• 46:57Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 46:58Tig Notaro?

But I don't know why. Good night.

• 47:00Mae Martin?

I follow the actor that played

• 47:02Tig Notaro?

  Good night, Bette Midler.

• 47:03Mae Martin?

Rocky. Oh, yeah, Bette. I mean, yeah.

• 47:07Mae Martin?

The actor that played Rocky in Rocky Horror, I follow him on on Instagram, Peter Hinwood. And he's, I love that he's still so passionate about Rocky Horror Picture Show. We post pictures all the time of Tim Curry and like throwbacks and he just seems like a cool.

• 47:21Tig Notaro?

God, what if I was like that about Instant Family?

• 47:24Mae Martin?

  What's Instant?

• 47:25Tig Notaro?

It's a movie I did with Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne and Octavia Spencer. And I've just constantly posted those.

• 47:35Tig Notaro?

I'm like, here I am with Rose at the craft table.

• 47:40Mae Martin?

Okay, I need to watch Instant Family because that is a foursome. I didn't know I needed.

• 47:44Tig Notaro?

  It's a very heartwarming movie.

• 47:46Mae Martin?

Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne, you and Octavia Spencer?

• 47:51Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 47:51Mae Martin?

  That, what a quad.

• 47:53Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 47:54Fortune Feimster?

And the, and you did another rom com with the

• 47:57Tig Notaro?

  Reese and Ashton.

• 47:59Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, that's right.

• 48:00Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 48:00Tig Notaro?

Yeah, but it feels more random to do Instant Family because it's not like a A classic rom com, you know, it's like the adoption family story.

• 48:12Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 48:12Tig Notaro?

Yeah, there was some other thing that was, um, oh, I was gonna say, I mean, John Travolta, you know, he, he ignited my fire as a kid.

• 48:23Mae Martin?

  Oh, yeah, for sure.

• 48:25Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 48:26Mae Martin?

Star Wars, when he uses his lightsaber to cut open the belly of the Taunton.

• 48:31Tig Notaro?

Yes. Yes, and it was like shrimp.

• 48:35Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 48:35Tig Notaro?

  Falling out.

• 48:37Mae Martin?

Who, what production designer made that choice that the insides look like big maggots? Oh, my Christ.

• 48:44Tig Notaro?

I thought it looked like raw shrimp, like jumbo shrimp.

• 48:47Mae Martin?

  Yes, it did.

• 48:48Tig Notaro?

Pouring out. Thomas, will you look up what came out of the Taunton?

• 48:52Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 48:53Fortune Feimster?

  The Taunton?

• 48:54Mae Martin?

And how they did it? Cause maybe it was shrimp.

• 48:57Tig Notaro?

  And how they did it?

• 48:58Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 48:59Tig Notaro?

Please, could you look up how the special effects did that scene?

• 49:04Mae Martin?

  Cause that's.

• 49:04Tig Notaro?

  We have time, right?

• 49:06Mae Martin?

That's Han Solo that crawls in. I want to know how, how Harrison felt about crawling into that raw shrimp.

• 49:12Fortune Feimster?

I don't know any Star Wars trivia.

• 49:14Tig Notaro?

Oh, I was a Star Wars nut.

• 49:18Fortune Feimster?

  Not this gal.

• 49:20Mae Martin?

Should the three of us go to Disney together?

• 49:22Tig Notaro?

  Probably.

• 49:23Fortune Feimster?

  Yeah, why not?

• 49:25Mae Martin?

Are you, do you like rides?

• 49:27Tig Notaro?

  No.

• 49:28Mae Martin?

Yeah, there, how are you guys on rides?

• 49:31Tig Notaro?

I like a ride, like Space Mountain I'm good with, or like, um, like a little roller coaster that is kind of fast and whoop, here comes a hill.

• 49:40Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 49:41Tig Notaro?

But not like, um, will we be alive?

• 49:44Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 49:45Tig Notaro?

  At the end.

• 49:46Mae Martin?

Not like will our vertebrae be dust? Yes.

• 49:49Tig Notaro?

  Like a heart attack.

• 49:50Mae Martin?

Yeah, I'm kind of the same.

• 49:52Fortune Feimster?

I'm not a roller coaster person at all, but for Chris Cole for his birthday, um, he did the thing where you can go to Six Flags and ride all the roller coasters you want all day.

• 50:03Mae Martin?

  Uh huh.

• 50:03Fortune Feimster?

And I just wanted to be a good friend, but I hate roller coasters for like the whole afternoon. I'm like literally passing out green.

• 50:14Tig Notaro?

Oh, my God, I know what we can do, and Thomas put this on the list. We can go to Disneyland and just get like little, um, you know, Disney hats and eat cotton candy and just walk around.

• 50:26Mae Martin?

Oh, just hang out and soak up the vibe.

• 50:28Tig Notaro?

  Carry a balloon and.

• 50:31Mae Martin?

I kind of do want to go with you guys just for the photos.

• 50:35Fortune Feimster?

  And a corn dog.

• 50:36Mae Martin?

Yeah, I want the photos of us with Mickey and like.

• 50:38Tig Notaro?

Yeah, and Minnie with her feet shoved into those high heels. Thomas, do you have an answer about what was in the tauntaun?

• 50:46Speaker 05

There is no definitive answer online. People speculate that it could be uh, kind of long balloons that are filled with goo or pig intestines.

• 50:58Tig Notaro?

  Ooh. No raw jumbo shrimp?

• 51:01Mae Martin?

  No one's saying jumbo shrimp.

• 51:04Fortune Feimster?

  Wow.

• 51:05Tig Notaro?

  Wow.

• 51:06Mae Martin?

Wow. We stumbled upon the mystery.

• 51:09Fortune Feimster?

  What a podcast.

• 51:10Tig Notaro?

  What a podcast.

• 51:12Fortune Feimster?

Learned a lot about each other.

• 51:14Tig Notaro?

  Mm hmm.

• 51:15Fortune Feimster?

  Through movies.

• 51:16Mae Martin?

There is a, is his name Emo Phillips?

• 51:20Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 51:20Mae Martin?

There is in UHF, in Weird Al's UHF, there's a section where Emo Phillips keeps getting fingers and limbs cut off and the blood is just, in that way that comedy blood spurts.

• 51:33Tig Notaro?

  Yeah, of course.

• 51:33Mae Martin?

  That we don't see anymore.

• 51:35Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 51:35Mae Martin?

Just the comedy blood spurting from all of us and he's, he's trying to, I think, still do it, still present a TV show while he's spurting everywhere. That was sort of.

• 51:43Tig Notaro?

You could paint comedy blood splirts.

• 51:47Mae Martin?

  That's true.

• 51:48Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 51:49Mae Martin?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 51:49Tig Notaro?

You should make a painting of all the things that we don't see anymore. And one of the things that I bring up often is mooning. Nobody moons anymore.

• 51:59Fortune Feimster?

I was just talking about this yesterday.

• 52:00Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 52:01Mae Martin?

  Mooning, quicksand.

• 52:03Fortune Feimster?

Cause I was, I'm writing a new act and in one of my stories that's not, I don't talk about it, but my friend mooned someone in the car ride home and my other friend said, yeah, people don't really moon anymore.

• 52:16Mae Martin?

  Yeah, I think.

• 52:17Tig Notaro?

  People don't moon.

• 52:19Mae Martin?

I feel like we've talked about it and then on social media, people were like, well, because that's sexual assault. And I was like, oh, come on.

• 52:24Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 52:24Mae Martin?

  We're talking about mooning.

• 52:26Fortune Feimster?

Back in the eighties, it was just a good time.

• 52:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, in the seventies, it was a grand old time, but um, but yes, we've lived and we've learned, but we still could use a painting of, you know, I always picture mooning um, out of a school bus window because that was the first time I saw it.

• 52:46Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 52:46Tig Notaro?

Seventies. People would just like, the bus would peel out of the school parking lot and you'd see moons.

• 52:55Fortune Feimster?

  Moons.

• 52:57Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 52:58Mae Martin?

  I love it.

• 52:58Tig Notaro?

I am firmly against sexual assault and harassment.

• 53:02Mae Martin?

  For sure. Me too.

• 53:03Tig Notaro?

  I do love a moon.

• 53:05Mae Martin?

A comedy moon, like, like, I think I've said when I was super down this summer and going through, you know, tough times and my friend was like being so earnestly helpful. And then she went to the bathroom and she came back completely naked.

• 53:18Tig Notaro?

  Oh, yeah.

• 53:19Mae Martin?

It was the best. That was a good friend. Joke. It made me laugh so hard. It was so unexpected. Just she sprinted around the kitchen.

• 53:26Tig Notaro?

You know, I, I was just realizing I love a moon, but it's not as fun when you see an ass crack.

• 53:35Mae Martin?

Oh, in, wait, that's such a crucial part of the moon.

• 53:38Tig Notaro?

No, I know. But I'm saying like, if somebody's pants are hanging down low.

• 53:42Mae Martin?

Oh, I see what you mean. By accident. Oh, no, that's not as fun. Yeah, yeah.

• 53:45Tig Notaro?

Yeah. And look, I've been guilty of that before in my life as well. But I'm just saying a full moon is, is what I'm looking for out of a school bus window.

• 53:55Mae Martin?

Yeah. Sort of. Back in the nineties with low, low rise jeans, low rise skinny jeans, there were a lot of butt cracks.

• 54:02Tig Notaro?

  Mm hmm.

• 54:03Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 54:04Tig Notaro?

  And thongs peeking out.

• 54:06Mae Martin?

Oh, yeah. We haven't heard Al's answer.

• 54:09Tig Notaro?

Oh, my gosh, that's right. What is Al's answer?

• 54:15Speaker 06

Okay, I'll, I'll tell you mine. I'll tell you mine. I have to say it's the 1976 movie Carrie, directed by Brian, Brian De Palma. I was a teenager going to the movie theater with my friends. And, I mean, the, the end of the movie, that, the scene in the graveyard, that's been duplicated and parodied so many times. In fact, I did a parody of it in my biopic. But the first time I saw it, it was, it kind of freaked me out. In fact, I remember the, the, the scene, of course, is one, the other. Carrie's friend is placing a, a flower on Carrie's grave. And Carrie's hand reaches up out of the grave and grabs her friend.

• 54:57Speaker 06

And I remember at the time, I literally jumped out of my seat. I, I was out of my chair and yelling at the screen, which is something that I, I've never done since. That apparently as a, as a 16 year old.

• 55:13Speaker 06

Alfred Yankovic, that really freaked me out. So, thank you for listening and keep in touch.

• 55:20Mae Martin?

  I will, Al.

• 55:21Tig Notaro?

  Of course, it's Alfred Yankovic.

• 55:24Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 55:24Tig Notaro?

Look at me calling him Albert. I don't deserve his Christmas cards.

• 55:29Fortune Feimster?

Oh my god. Yeah, those scary movies leave a mark.

• 55:32Mae Martin?

Jumping out of your seat is such a, what a compliment to the filmmakers. They're like, boing, boing, boing, like to be so electrified that you're just...

• 55:40Tig Notaro?

I forgot to mention, Thomas is also a massive Al fan.

• 55:44Mae Martin?

  Are you, Thomas?

• 55:45Speaker 05

Oh, yeah. I had all the tapes.

• 55:47Mae Martin?

  Me too.

• 55:48Speaker 05

Yeah, just grew up thinking that was a fun, his American Pie parody, I had that memorized.

• 55:53Mae Martin?

Me too, me too. And also, yeah, just that era, I guess we were similar ages when Star Wars Episode One came out and that song came, and it was like, anyone singing those songs at school kind of got the cred of as if they'd written those Weird Al songs. Like you were, it was, you were the funny, cool kid.

• 56:11Speaker 05

Matthew Burtick knew all the songs and it made him so cool.

• 56:15Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 56:17Tig Notaro?

Well, what a, what a treat. It was so great to reconnect with you all after the, and during the fires and to have a great question from Al. Weird Al.

• 56:31Mae Martin?

Yeah, always uplifting to talk to you guys and a pledge.

• 56:35Tig Notaro?

Yeah. And does anybody have anything coming up?

• 56:39Fortune Feimster?

I'm working on my new hour. So if anyone lives in Ontario, California, or Oxnard, California, Irvine, California, or Huntsville, Alabama, I'm doing a bunch of club dates, very intimate shows. So there'll be new material, crowd work, all that good stuff. And then my tour starts after that in Savannah, Georgia, and Charleston, South Carolina, and a lot more other dates on my website.

• 57:09Tig Notaro?

Well, I'll say right now that we have the Handsome Pod live in Nashville on April 6th. And then we will be also Handsome Pod live in Austin, Texas on April 12th.

• 57:25Fortune Feimster?

And those are both like 90% sold, so.

• 57:28Tig Notaro?

Yeah, so you better get on it. Get on.

• 57:32Fortune Feimster?

These are big theaters, too. This is gonna be really cool.

• 57:34Tig Notaro?

  Yeah.

• 57:35Fortune Feimster?

  Awesome ones like 2,800 Cedar.

• 57:38Tig Notaro?

I'm also gonna be in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, June 14th.

• 57:44Mae Martin?

It feels so weird that it's finally happening, but my music album is coming out. I think when this airs, the single will be out, maybe two, maybe even two singles. Um, so it's always helpful if you stream those on Spotify, if you, if you like them. And, uh, and then I'm doing four big music tour shows, which is so bizarre for me. Cause I'm not a musician and I'm really nervous and they're big venues, so please come.

• 58:10Fortune Feimster?

  Nice.

• 58:10Mae Martin?

February 26th in LA. And I'm gonna play the whole album with a band and I'm gonna play a couple of covers as well. So March 1st in Toronto at Danforth Music Hall, March 4th in New York. And then March 9th in London. I haven't been back to England in so long, so please come out to those shows. There's maybe a special guest or two and you'll see me like muddling through playing live for the first time.

• 58:34Tig Notaro?

And will you be getting a haircut from Debbie?

• 58:36Mae Martin?

Oh my God. Yes. Oh my God. You didn't even occur to me, but yes, I'm, I simply must.

• 58:44Tig Notaro?

  You simply must.

• 58:45Mae Martin?

Oh, I'm gonna get her to come to the show, too.

• 58:47Tig Notaro?

Get a little video. We could post a video of you getting a haircut from Debbie.

• 58:51Mae Martin?

  Yes.

• 58:52Tig Notaro?

  Tell her hello.

• 58:53Mae Martin?

  Yeah.

• 58:54Tig Notaro?

And, uh, I guess until next time.

• 58:58Fortune Feimster?

  Keep it handsome.

• 59:01Mae Martin?

Handsome is hosted by me, Mae Martin, Tig Notaro and Fortune Feimster. The show is produced, recorded and edited by Thomas Willett. Email us at [email protected] and please follow us on social media at HandsomePod.

• 59:23Mae Martin?

That was a HeadGum Podcast. Checking Allstate first could save you hundreds on car insurance. Not checking that my outfit matches the vibe of the evening before heading out the door? I regret everything. The night called for a black t-shirt, but I wore a white one instead, and now everything's out of alignment.

• 59:39Fortune Feimster?

Yeah, checking first is handsome, so check Allstate first for an auto quote. It could save you hundreds. You're in good hands with Allstate. Potential savings vary, subject to terms, conditions, and availability. Allstate, North American Insurance Company and affiliates, Northbrook, Illinois.

• 59:56Speaker 08

  And Hannah Simone.

• 59:58Speaker 07

And we host The Mess Around, a New Girl rewatch podcast on HeadGum. Now, here's the thing. Every single week, we chat about an episode of New Girl, and we really get into it. Like, we get up in there. We get up in there. You know, we reminisce about our times on set. We share behind-the-scenes tea. We react to rewatching episodes that we haven't seen in years. We talk about how Jake Johnson is dog.

• 1:00:19Speaker 08

That's not true. We talk about so many memories we have of working with the biggest stars on the planet. I'm talking Prince, Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo.

• 1:00:32Speaker 07

We're just two BFFs having a good old time, okay? Sometimes, we even talk to other co-stars like Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, and Damon Wayans Jr., and your dad. We talk to your dad on this show as well.

• 1:00:43Speaker 08
