Why Hugging Face's new robot is the Seinfeld of AI devices

Hugging Face just launched Reachy Mini, an open source AI robot with big googly eyes and not much utility, and that’s kind of the charm. On this episode of Equity Kirsten Korosec, Max Zeff, and Anthony Ha break down the bot's debut, why it’s giving Seinfeld energy, and what it says about the future of open source hardware. This episode of Equity is brought to you by Schneider Electric. Schneider Electric, your energy technology partner.

• 0:17Kirsten Korosec?

Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch's flagship podcast about the business of startups. Today is Friday, July 11th. I'm Kirsten Korsak, Transportation Editor at TechCrunch, and I'm joined by Senior AI Reporter Max Seth and Weekend Editor Anthony Ha.

• 0:33Anthony Ha?

So I'm coming back from my weekend, which is like Monday through Wednesday, catching up on the tech news. And if I have this right, Grok is just like fully unhinged and unfiltered right now? Is that what's going on?

• 0:45Kirsten Korosec?

  True story, yes.

• 0:47Anthony Ha?

  We'll get into it.

• 0:48Speaker 02

We will get into what's going on with Grok and everything that's going on with X on the show today. But first, we have deals of the week from Rivian and Lang Chain. And then we'll talk about Elon Musk and XAI and X, which are all just one big giant mess right now. And later, Hugging Face's buzzy new robot. But let's get into it with the first deal. Rivian has some news this week. Kirsten, what's going on with them?

• 1:12Kirsten Korosec?

Yeah, well, so first of all, if you remember a couple of weeks ago, I was not on the show. Sean O'Kane was on the show and I was like off on some secret location.

• 1:20Anthony Ha?

And we were grilling Sean about what you were doing. He would not tell.

• 1:24Speaker 02

  He wouldn't say.

• 1:25Kirsten Korosec?

And I was actually at two things. One was Redwood Materials, which we talked about last week. But I was also testing the second generation Rivian flagship line, the R1S and the R1T, the quad motor. All of this matters to people who are really into EVs and off-roading. And for others, maybe they've already like tuned it out. But let's just say that I had fun off-roading, talking to a bunch of the executives, talking about software. And the one thing that we didn't talk about is actually what the deal of the week is, which is Rivian's spinoff, also, don't love that name, going to be honest, raised another 200 million to build e-bikes and more. This time, the money is coming from Green

• 2:10Kirsten Korosec?

Oaks Capital and Bloomberg was the first to report it. The crazy thing to me is in 2025, this company's post-money valuation is $1 billion. And that's kind of saying something in the world of micro mobility, which I've said this before, but it just like brings me back to 2016.

• 2:29Anthony Ha?

Well, because they haven't brought any products to market. The $1 billion is based entirely on just like, we think this is a cool idea and we think this is going to sell a lot at some point in the future.

• 2:39Kirsten Korosec?

Correct. Well, I will say this. So there's a lot of buzz about also. And we first wrote about it a couple of months ago and we had a scoop about Johnny Ive, you know, previously of Apple, that he was involved in the design. You know, my sources have said that it's not clear whether all of his design ideas will end up in the fully baked end model. But you're right, we haven't seen this vehicle, this e-bike-esque. You know, they're not quite saying it. I mean, it sounds like it's a e-bike that can be modified into a multiple different types of e-bikes. That's the general sense. But yeah, this is completely based off of something that the public hasn't seen.

• 3:23Kirsten Korosec?

And I will say that the founder and CEO of Rivian is very good at getting people to give him money.

• 3:31Speaker 02

Kirsten, I will say, you're talking about in the last week, you know, Rivian executives pulled you out in the desert to show you that their, you know, electric vehicle can do tricks on top of rocks and spin in a circle. Their spinoff company is raising a billion dollars to make scooters. It feels like we're entering like a new era or maybe coming back into this, you know, 2016 era of electric vehicle startups. I mean, can you tell me just broadly, like, is this just Rivian's hype right now that we're seeing or something broader?

• 4:04Kirsten Korosec?

A little bit, yeah, I would say so. Just one note, the valuation is a billion. They haven't raised a billion yet, but you never know. That might happen someday soon, based on the rate that they're doing. I would say we're living in kind of two worlds. Rivian has a lot of hype around it and also has a lot of hype around it. And also another EV startup that we've had a number of scoops about, Slate Auto, which is backed by Jeff Bezos, has a lot of hype about it. But then there's also the reality piece. The reality is, is that many EV startups, at least the four-wheeled ones, cars, have struggled and have gone into bankruptcy. And even Rivian, which, you know, is a publicly traded company,

• 4:46Kirsten Korosec?

has raised quite a bit of money in its lifetime, has products. Those sales haven't been, you know, let's say as robust as they would probably like. And the big moment is going to be when their next generation cheaper model, the R2, comes out, but that's not coming until 2026. So it's sort of like two realities. I will say this, we've seen a few e-bike companies go into bankruptcy and then come back out of bankruptcy, VanMoof being one of those. And there is, you know, reporting around Lime, good old Lime, actually IPO-ing. But they've been talking about IPO-ing for forever. So, you know, it's a very mixed bag.

• 5:31Kirsten Korosec?

It really is very dependent on the actual company. And it's no longer that, oh, you have a micromobility company? Oh, you're doing something EV related? It's a win.

• 5:42Anthony Ha?

It's funny to hear about all the struggles in this space because, you know, as a New Yorker, I just stick my head out and like, you're instantly about to get run over by an e-bike. So I'm curious, like, to what extent is, I mean, obviously, New York is, most of America is not like New York, just in terms of density, et cetera, et cetera. But like, have these past companies that have struggled, is it that the consumer demand just isn't there? Or is it something where just something, it's more about like, the business model not being fully figured out yet?

• 6:11Kirsten Korosec?

Yeah, I think it's a business model and also the margins. I mean, the reality is there's been, first of all, a lot of micromobility that has struggled is on the shared end of things, shared micromobility. And, you know, we should put it in the show notes, but Rebecca Bellan was in Europe about a month ago and was on stage at the micromobility conference, but had a couple of really good pieces about how micromobility has finally kind of matured, and there are some that have survived. And there are places where shared micromobility exists, but it's a very difficult business model and one that isn't a guarantee. And so, you know, I think that business model is an issue, margins are an issue, tariffs.

• 6:52Kirsten Korosec?

There's an interesting startup called Bloom that is kind of trying to be this like middleman, if you will, in terms of helping e-bike companies survive and put their products out there. So we're seeing a maturing market for sure. And in its wake, though, a lot of failures.

• 7:08Anthony Ha?

Do you like the word "micromobility"?

• 7:12Anthony Ha?

Because I think it's kind of awkward. And I always, I think it's like Hot Wheels or something.

• 7:17Kirsten Korosec?

I do. I do think of like, I guess maybe I've been reporting on it and talking about it for so long that I'm over the term. But in the early days, I would immediately think of like, actually, the vision I would have is like a grown person on a very small like child's bike, which would always make me laugh. But, you know, what else are you going to call it? Like, these are lightweight EVs. I mean, I guess that's the other, the other option under the umbrella of electric scooters and stand-up bike slash scooters and cargo e-bikes. Like, what do you call it?

• 7:51Anthony Ha?

Yeah, I mean, I have no constructive suggestions. I just wanted to be snarky about it.

• 7:57Kirsten Korosec?

Well, you know, the one thing I want to mention is, I mentioned earlier that the company is valued now at $1 billion. And it's striking because that's actually a lot of money in the micromobility world. But in the AI world, that's like the change in the cup holder of my vehicle.

• 8:17Anthony Ha?

Right, so I think you are you are setting me up to describe our next deal, which is for this company called Langchain. And this is a scoop by our colleague Marina that, at least as of when this story ran a couple of days ago, the deal was not closed, but is in the process of raising a new round that will value the company at, you guessed it, $1 billion. And I think one of the things that was striking to me was, you know, unlike also, this is a company that has a product on the market, and so it has annualized recurring revenue of 12 to 16 million, which is, you know, for most of this, a lot of the startups we cover, that is like very serious money. A lot of companies would be very excited to have that.

• 8:57Anthony Ha?

And also, that is so, so a drop in the bucket compared to $1 billion that if this wasn't an AI company, it's hard to imagine it getting to that valuation on that level of revenue.

• 9:09Kirsten Korosec?

Okay, I have a couple of questions. Either one of you can answer. I mean, I normally would kick this to Max, the AI expert on staff, but, you know, feel free to jump in, Anthony, if you have an opinion. But this is an AI infrastructure startup, so what exactly are they doing here? And why is their product valuable enough to be now worth $1 billion?

• 9:30Speaker 02

I can take a stab at this. So Langchain was one of the few startups that, you know, in the early ChatGPT hype, like right after, you know, you found out that you could talk to your computer, really gained a lot of affinity with developers. It let people pretty easily build, you know, AI applications that use an LLM and, you know, let you build, you know, these LLM-powered apps. Like, oh, you can talk to your, I don't know, Google Doc. You can talk to your, you know, PDF, your grocery list or whatever. It became an early favorite on GitHub. They also had some tools where you could monitor your applications too. So, yeah, they described themselves as an AI infrastructure startup.

• 10:11Speaker 02

But, yeah, they really kind of allow different companies to build apps powered by LLMs.

• 10:17Anthony Ha?

And one of the things that was striking to me with, like, reading this coverage was also like how much, in a way, if you simply just swapped out LLM for cloud or something like that, like, that this is in some ways, it feels like a business that you could imagine existing 10 years ago, just in a very, very different context. But it's basically building, you know, developer tooling and infrastructure. And so in that sense, it feels like it's doing something old for like a new rapidly growing space.

• 10:44Speaker 02

I think that's right. I mean, I think it is kind of a picks and shovels kind of player in this space where they're giving the tools for a lot of AI native companies, so to speak. Some of their customers are Replit and Whipling and also Klarna, which are, you know, all these companies that are trying to build all these AI applications and they're using LangChain to do that. One interesting thing here is that, you know, when they started, they were really popular because they were open source and a lot of the tools that they built, you know, you could download them for free. That's kind of how they developed so much affinity. But in the last year, they've really invested in this tool Langsmith, which has been their real revenue driver. It's a closed source product that they can actually monetize now.

• 11:27Speaker 02

And that's where they're getting that, you know, 12 million to 16 million dollars in ARR from, which, which, yeah, it's a long way off from that billion dollar valuation. But I mean, I think that's the AI space for you is that people only are looking at the upside right now.

• 11:41Kirsten Korosec?

Yeah, I mean, the interesting thing here is it sounds like based on their business model, it was sort of like a freemium type style where they had a free tier and now they have this like 39 a month. I don't know if you know the history, but was that always the case where it was like a freemium model or have they been playing around with different business models in terms of like gaining revenue? Was there ever any other method that they were using to bring in money?

• 12:07Speaker 02

I think they've been playing around with a couple different business models here and this latest version seems to be making the most sense for them. As with, you know, everything in the AI space, I think these businesses are changing constantly. I mean, I mean, we talk about Cursor a lot on this show. I mean, Cursor is one of the most successful AI startups and, and their business model is constantly changing. They just completely upended their pricing a couple of weeks ago to kind of move from this subscription tier to now people pay for how much they use it. Kind of like a OpenAI and Google does. So I think everyone is trying to figure out, how do we actually make money off of AI right now? And that's a going question.

• 12:48Anthony Ha?

In terms of that, like, open versus closed question, which is kind of what your time out, or at least related to it, it seems like there were periods where this was sort of a very heated debate. Different people, like accusing people of betraying their ideals by not being more open. But it also feels like we're now at this point, like, almost any sort of software sector, where the idea of kind of a pure open source company, that doesn't really seem to be something that is happening on a large profitable scale.

• 13:14Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, we're gonna talk about Hugging Face later on the show, which is like the biggest, you know, open source purveyor. And I think they themselves are trying to figure out, okay, we're so popular with developers, where does the money come from here? And we'll talk later on about, you know, how these open source companies are trying to now make money. But before that, after the break, we're gonna get into what is going on with X and XAI's AI models, and how them publishing their system prompt revealed a little too much about what they're doing to their AI.

• 13:50Anthony Ha?

• 14:26Kirsten Korosec?

I'm gonna open this segment with just a question. What in the H double hockey sticks is going on with X right now? And that's like an evergreen question. But let's, but let's bring it down to this week. So much has been going on.

• 14:44Anthony Ha?

Well, there are two big headlines that at least officially are not related, although it's sort of hard to believe that they aren't related in some way. One is that Linda Iaccarino, the CEO of X who came on about two years ago, announced that she's resigning. And I don't think there was like a very clear explanation of why. And one likely one would simply be like, well, X is now part of XAI. So she maybe doesn't want to be as senior a role as she had before. The other explanation would be that things are getting kind of crazy with Grok. And we can talk about the system prompt, but even before that Elon Musk had kind of announced literally on the 4th of July, hey, Grok has been improved. You should all check it out and you'll notice that the answers are better.

• 15:26Anthony Ha?

And very quickly it became clear that things had changed and that Grok was was more willing to say pretty aggressively anti Semitic things. I mean, one thing I noticed over the weekend, you could actually compare similar responses it had made like kind of a week apart about Hollywood executives, which the crazy thing that multiple people on X are asking about this, but that, you know, before the change, it gave this very sort of nuanced answer about like, yes, there are like Hollywood executives who are Jewish, but this is also an anti Semitic stereotype. After the change, and again, I can't say for sure if this is because of the change, but after the change, it was very much like, wow, a lot of Jewish people in charge of Hollywood. And then you could sort of see that in other things. And then later on, it was also just like, I'm Mecca Hitler.

• 16:10Speaker 02

Right, yeah. The latter example is really, you know, there's no obscurity about that. Like there's, there's no nuance there.

• 16:18Kirsten Korosec?

There are no nuances. I think that what the, the term you're looking for is that escalated quickly over a period of a weekend. The timing was amazing.

• 16:27Speaker 02

It was an insane week for X. I mean, there, there was some reporting that I think from the Wall Street Journal that, that Linda Iaccarino had talked with people about resigning before this Grok accident, so to speak, happened. But, you know, it, it feels like there's just been a lot of kind of mess happening with X in, you know, the last couple of months anyways. There's a lot of reasons you could guess why she would leave. I do think that, you know, the biggest change from when She started is that X is now owned by XAI and Grok, which, you know, has had outbursts like this before is a really key part of the platform now. Like Elon Musk has made clear that like he wants Grok to power the algorithm. He wants Grok to be responding to everyone's questions. Everyone can talk to it.

• 17:12Speaker 02

It's a part of the subscription to X like it's really a key part of it. And it's might be kind of a tough sell to advertisers.

• 17:20Kirsten Korosec?

Oh, and by the way, Grok is also in Teslas, apparently coming to Teslas. Is that right?

• 17:25Speaker 02

I actually didn't know that. Is that true that Grok is going to be in your Tesla now? That really sounds awful.

• 17:30Kirsten Korosec?

I thought that we had a story on that today. Did we not? I'm excited. This part's going to be edited out. Yes. No, it is. I'm absolutely no, keep this in because Grok is coming to Tesla vehicles next week, says Elon Musk. So Max, it's okay that you didn't see this article because you were up very late covering Grok news. So you can be excused for not seeing this early morning story.

• 17:55Speaker 02

That's true. I mean, so in the midst of this chaos that was going on, you know, where XAI is XAI's chatbot is calling itself Mecca Hitler. Linda Yaccarino is resigning. The night after all of this happens, Elon Musk goes on a live stream and he references absolutely none of it. He spoke for an hour and a half to announce Grok for the launch of XAI's next AI model, which is very impressive on benchmarks, you know, can't knock it there. But he completely avoided talking about his CEO resigning or the fact that his AI chatbot was simply was being like blatantly racist and anti Semitic

• 18:40Speaker 02

to the point where they had to delete the things that it was saying to kind of cover it up. And they had to change the system prompt. For people who don't know what I'm talking about, on July 4th, they changed it as Anthony mentioned, and they they added one section that told Grok to not be so politically correct. And that seemed to be one of the biggest changes that they made to it. And then after this whole incident, they removed that section. And so now Grok is trying to be politically correct again. Clearly that backfired in a in a pretty major way.

• 19:10Anthony Ha?

It's a reminder that it's fun to make fun of political correctness, but part of what we mean when we say politically correct is like, hey, not saying a bunch of stuff that's hateful and offensive. And yeah, it was pretty interesting to see where the line was for X and XAI, because clearly they are courting controversy to some extent, that the whole idea was to make Grok sort of more quote unquote, free speech friendly, less politically correct. Again, that's like a phrase like even Elon said, like, send me, you know, facts that are not politically correct that are true. And then we'll make sure we train Grok on that. This wasn't like an accident, like this is the goal they were working towards. And then they're like, oh, but this is maybe a little too much.

• 19:53Kirsten Korosec?

Yeah, totally. And here's the thing that I think is really interesting. And another story that we should put in our show notes is from Sarah Perez today. And, you know, whether or not this is why Linda Yaccarino left, but she worked very hard to bring back advertisers. And Grok, while very on brand, could drive advertisers away from the platform. And she kind of talks about how that's even kind of affecting the daily active user base decline over at X. She doesn't associate the cause for it, but what we are seeing is that, you know, in the second quarter of 2025, there was a decline by roughly 10%, at least according to the app intelligence firm Sensor Tower.

• 20:37Kirsten Korosec?

It's still the biggest user base platform, but it'll be interesting to see as Red starts to actually make some ground, like, believe it or not. Blue Sky is still small user base, but growing. But the rate of growth on Threads is outpacing the rate of growth on X. So to me, what will be really interesting is that while sure, the un-PC Grok, which you can interact with on X, has attracted a lot of people, will it go too far and actually start causing people to go to other platforms?

• 21:15Speaker 02

Yeah, I think that, you know, we've been talking about Elon Musk's politics and how they've been hurting his companies for, you know, years now. I don't know. But I think that with Grok, it feels like a very direct attempt to kind of inject this anti-woke, free speech sort of, you know, quote unquote, agenda into his products, like very directly, like literally putting Grok into Teslas and then into X. And it's really just dispersing throughout his companies. And like, whether that hurts those businesses remains to be seen. I'm not sure I know too many enterprises that are like racing to use Grok for, even

• 21:54Speaker 02

though it's very impressive, because it just feels like this very contentious product.

• 22:01Kirsten Korosec?

Yeah, the appeal of Grok reaches a certain demographic and it's not widely accepted by, you know, I think the real winners in here are AI chatbots used by like enterprise and consumers. And I just don't really see that happening with Grok. I don't know if you have an opinion, Max, but we actually do need to move on because I really want to talk about this next topic, not just because I'm excited about it, but because Max is so wrong about it. That is hugging face, opening up orders for its Reachy Mini desktop robots. And I just want to tell the audience that as soon as we saw this story, I was

• 22:44Kirsten Korosec?

like, oh, this is going to be a huge hit. Like, everyone's going to want these in spite of the price. And Max was like, no, absolutely not. No one will buy these things. Why would I want personally? And yet, what happened in the last 24 hours, Max?

• 23:00Speaker 02

I was, I was deeply wrong. I've actually never felt so wrong about a take so instantly. This was yesterday. This came out and I was like, I, I don't know who, Kirsten's right, I was 100% like, I don't know who's going to buy this. For folks who don't know, the Reachy Mini is a little robot that has a head that moves around and it has screens for eyes and little antennas coming out of its head. And It sits on your desk and you can program it with open source code. And I'm like, who is going to pay $300 for that? And the answer is a lot of people. Hugging Face said that they've sold $500,000 worth of this product in just the last 24 hours. I've had like dozen, but not dozen.

• 23:43Speaker 02

I've had many friends reach out to me to just say, this thing is so cool. Like, how do you get one? And now I myself am really interested in getting one. But I will say, like, this feels like a very niche product for people who want to put open source AI into a little robot on their desk. It feels like, you know, a hacker's kind of dream, but maybe not like a mass consumer product that Hugging Face maybe needs right now.

• 24:10Anthony Ha?

So it sounds like at first you were trying to back away from your previous stance and now you're doubling down.

• 24:15Speaker 02

I'm trying to present, look, I'm in a tight spot here. It's been, it's been a very tumultuous day. It's been a very tumultuous, I was listening to Elon Musk late last night, you know, this is, there's been a lot going on. But I'm trying to just say, like, Hugging Face, you know, we were talking about open source businesses earlier. Like, Hugging Face gives away AI models for free. And them selling this robot, they acquired a French robotics company, Pollen Robotics, to, to make this possible. And I was pretty skeptical of when they acquired a robotics company because I'm like, what is Hugging Face doing getting into robots? But I think this is their real chance to make revenue here. Because they don't really have much of a business that I can tell outside of this.

• 25:01Speaker 02

But I think that they need something to be more kind of broadly interesting to consumers. And I'm not sure that this robot is it, but I think that a lot of like developer types are going to really geek out on these robots.

• 25:16Kirsten Korosec?

Yeah, so I would say this, like, you're not wrong that this is a niche product. However, I think the niche is much bigger. In terms of a customer base than it would have been, let's say, even five years ago. So it's all programmable. My understanding is in Python, there are a lot of people who actually know and understand Python now. Sure, that's niche, but I think that there's an appeal here, the open source piece of it. There are a lot of devices out there that can be in our home that are, you know, in the robotics realm, or even like just the stationary, you know, Google Home product or the Amazon product. But there are a lot of privacy concerns with that.

• 25:59Kirsten Korosec?

And I think that surveillance and a device owned by a large mega tech corporation, always listening to your conversations and things like that, has lost its appeal for a lot of people. Sure, a lot of consumers still, but folks who are in the industry, I think, want to apply AI to a physical thing. And we've seen this happen. It's very hobbyist, but if they pull off this robot and it works well, I could see it being a huge hit and one that could really put hugging face on the physical map, meaning not just, you know, an open source company.

• 26:37Anthony Ha?

Well, and it also feels like it's coming at this interesting time where not necessarily the word of peak, but certainly seeing a lot of growing anxiety around AI, which I think then is sort of spilled over to anxiety around robotics. And that a lot of the products that people are like focusing on, like the Optimus robot from Tesla, are these sort of either industrial or they're like very intimidating looking things. And I mean, I haven't been back to CES for a few years, but it feels like it's been a while since we've seen the little cute robot. And so to see like also just a robot that feels friendly and not threatening seems like a little bit of a throwback as well.

• 27:10Kirsten Korosec?

Yeah, you know, it reminds me of, I don't know if you remember this company that is no longer around, but it was maybe a little too ahead of its time, which was Anki. Oh, yeah. Robotics and like sort of that cute fun appeal. Like, I think there's a moment here where the capabilities on the software side have really been augmented by, you know, I don't know how many powers of magnitude over the last five years. And having a cute robot, I think there's a huge market for that. Max, I'll give you a last word before we wrap up.

The only thing I was gonna say is that I really do think that there's gonna be a lot of people vibe coding, open source robot programs into their Reachy Mini. Like, people who even don't know Python, who will just like get this thing, like kids who could just be like, alright, I wanna make it, you know, spin its head around, like, you know, every time I say what's up to it. And, I don't know, like, I do think that this does have a broader kind of audience than than maybe I initially considered for something like this. And I also love that, the thing I do kind of love about it now, in my 24-hour journey with it, is that it actually has no purpose. You know, you talk about these AI devices, like the Humane AI pin and the Rabbit R1, they were supposed to do something, and the problem is that they couldn't do anything.

Like, they were just not that useful. So I kind of love the idea of this robot that sits on your desk, it's not supposed to do anything. You're supposed to like program it to like say something here and there, bob its head. And it's like, that's actually kind of fun. And maybe that's the AI device we needed all along, was one that's meant to do nothing.

Well, you know, hey, I mean, look, Seinfeld was a hit because it was a show about nothing, right? I mean, I think-

• 28:50Speaker 02

Exactly. It's the Seinfeld of AI devices.

• 28:53Kirsten Korosec?

The Seinfeld of AI devices. I would say this, I think the reason why it will be a hit, and I'm so glad that you see my point of view now, within 24 hours, amazing, is you can make it your own. And you can, like you said, vibe code on it, you can, I could see kids using this, I could see it in classrooms. I could see it as a tool that would get people really excited about learning more about software. So, I think we need to actually have TechCrunch maybe get one and play around with it. Agreed? Okay, I see everyone nodding. Alright, we are out of time. Equity will be back next week.

• 29:34Kirsten Korosec?

Until then, you can find Equity under the handle at EquityPod on X and Threads.

• 29:41Rebecca Bellan?

Equity is produced by Teresa Loconsolo with editing by Kel. We'd also like to thank TechCrunch's audience development team. Thank you so much for listening and we'll talk to you next time.
