Look, it's not that confusing. I'm Rob Harvilla, host of the podcast 60 Songs That Explain the 90s, except we did 120 songs. And now we're back with the 2000s. I refuse to say aughts. 2000 to 2009. The Strokes, Rihanna, J Lo, Kanye, sure. And now the show is called 60 Songs That Explain the 90s: The 2000s. Wow. That's too long a title for me to say anything else right now. Just trust me. That's 60 Songs That Explain the 90s: The 2000s. Preferably on Spotify.

Hello and welcome to Band Splain. I am your host, Yasi Salek. Usually, this is a show where I invite an expert guest on to help me explain a cult band or iconic artist. But today, it's the recording of the live show we did in Los Angeles with 60 Songs That Explain the 90s: The 2000s, where we drafted soundtracks. Along with the estimable Rob Harvilla, we were joined by Sean Fantasy and Chris Ryan to make this very special episode. Before we get into it, though, I wanted to take a moment to just thank everyone who came out to the show, and also to everyone who listens, just for your patience and your understanding. Obviously, this has been a

• 2:42Yasi Salek?

particularly difficult stretch for me personally, but I've been absolutely buoyed by the incredibly kind messages I've received from you guys. I am sorry I made so many jokes about my house burning down at the live show that you are about to hear, but you know what? That's just what I do. It's how I deal with life. Thank you for laughing, especially at the ones that were maybe not that funny. I said this on social media, but I wanted to repeat it here. The amount of support and love I have received from not just my friends and family and people I know, but from all of you guys, the listeners of this show that I love making so much, has absolutely floored me. I have cried so much more as a result of the incredible kindness, generosity, and thoughtfulness of strangers than I have

• 3:26Yasi Salek?

over anything I've lost. Thank you so, so much to every single person who sent me a card, a note of encouragement, a band t-shirt. You guys, I've gotten so many amazingly cool band shirts from you guys. The original 80s Black Flag one, the Cure ones, the Replacements one, I could go on and on. I'm beyond grateful. A book, a CD, a tape, a 7-inch, a drawing, a Taco Bell gift card, thank you for that one. Literally, anything that you guys have sent. Visiting my P.O. box and having to roll a literal cart to my car every time has just been so insane and beautiful and overwhelming. It all means so much more to

• 4:07Yasi Salek?

me than you guys could ever know. And again, I've said it before, and I'm sorry to be earnest goes to fucking camp again, but I really am so grateful and I am so, so lucky. If you can, please consider supporting some of the many great organizations who are working so hard to bring help and relief to people who have lost everything in these fires. People who are not as lucky as me. Any little bit counts, whether it's to an organization like Altadena Girls, Music Cares, Sweet Relief, or just to the individual GoFundMes that are going around that have not met their goals. If you can, it means a lot. This night was super, super fun, and I really hope you guys enjoy the episode.

• 4:49Yasi Salek?

Also, just so you know, I am very aware that I did not win this draft fairly, but my house burned down, so I'll take it. Here's the episode.

• 5:08Yasi Salek?

  Guys.

• 5:11Yasi Salek?

You can't turn your mic on. You were too stressed out by the Nickelback song.

• 5:17Yasi Salek?

It's such a good song, though. That song fucking slaps, doesn't it, all you guys? Yeah.

• 5:21Speaker 00

  That's right. Hello.

• 5:24Yasi Salek?

  Hi.

• 5:25Speaker 00

  Hello.

• 5:28Speaker 00

Thank you for coming, Yasi. For no reason in particular, I have brought you two bottles of wine.

• 5:34Yasi Salek?

  So nice.

• 5:37Speaker 00

Let's see what we got here. No, that's the second one. The first one, I went right around the corner here. I asked for a nice white for someone who was health-conscious. He was like, "That's not enough information." Like, California, France, or Italy? I was like, "California." He just pointed at one. I bought it. It looks pretty nice.

• 5:57Yasi Salek?

  Beautiful. Thank you.

• 5:58Speaker 00

That's the first wine. The second wine is from Ohio.

• 6:04Speaker 00

I shipped it here. I put it in a box. And I'm not going to say the brand name, because this is medium rude to even talk about. This is Lake Erie Sweet Bell.

• 6:16Speaker 00

It is sweet table wine. When I brought it home, my wife was like, "What'd you get?" And I told her and she made this face. And that's when I decided to get the second.

• 6:22Yasi Salek?

That's gross, but I really appreciate it.

• 6:24Speaker 00

Okay, so try this. And if you don't like it, uh, serve it to your enemies. Serve it to rival podcasters, insurance people. And finally, um, I know you are very health conscious, but I couldn't not bring the official delicacy of Ohio, which is Buckeyes. This is not an OSU thing. This is chocolate and peanut butter. Don't overthink it. Don't eat all of them at the same time. I made rookie mistake.

• 6:49Yasi Salek?

It's not like a nut that falls from a tree or something?

• 6:51Speaker 00

That's another thing. This is chocolate and peanut butter. That's all it is. Just in a rough nut shape. No, no, no to all of this. All right, that's fine. I'm used to that, but I...

• 7:02Yasi Salek?

Thank you, Rob. That's so kind.

• 7:04Speaker 00

Of course. Yasi, you are so loved, so beloved.

• 7:13Yasi Salek?

  You guys saw us.

• 7:14Speaker 00

One of the great joys of my life right now is just going to the GoFundMe page, just reading the comments.

• 7:21Yasi Salek?

Rob, you're being so presumptuous. Did you guys know my house burned down?

• 7:24Speaker 00

  Feeling the energy?

• 7:27Yasi Salek?

What if they don't know? Then they're gonna be like, "Why is he talking to her like she's Make-A-Wish Foundation?" And like, they need to know. Not everyone follows the, you know, social media.

• 7:37Speaker 00

What's been going on with you, Yasi?

• 7:39Yasi Salek?

  Besides the house burning down?

• 7:40Speaker 00

No, that's it. That's probably all that's been going on with you.

• 7:43Yasi Salek?

It's taken up a lot of time. Well, I'm living with my new roommate, uh, my dad.

• 7:47Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 7:47Yasi Salek?

And we've been watching White Collar, which is really a good show to watch with your dad.

• 7:55Yasi Salek?

I mean, honestly, there's so many seasons. Things are good. Listen, I really wanted to declutter, you guys, so... That's a cheap joke, but it's actually true. It was literally on my, like, vision board for 2025. Also, I used to have moths and I don't have moths anymore because they died.

• 8:16Yasi Salek?

And this is like, this is really honest and it's gonna sound like a joke, but on one hand, I lost everything that I've ever owned and loved. Yes, but on the other hand, I love attention.

• 8:31Yasi Salek?

So I have like a really conflicting feelings about what's happened. There's so much attention. Yes. It's so nice. But no, seriously, you guys, I went to my P O box. I'm gonna cry. Like, the first time, and I've been going regularly, and I just opened all these incredible gifts from all you guys, all the people that listen. Just, I was, I was so touched. I was so moved. I cried for two hours. Just t-shirts from people's personal collections, books that you guys know that I would like. Like, somebody was like, "I heard you talk about the untethered soul." That's right, babe. I'm woo woo and I needed to heal my soul. And she was like, "I live nearby the, like, ashram where the man who wrote it runs it,

• 9:17Yasi Salek?

and I got it signed for you." It's just like, I've just been crying, and I'm so sorry. I was like in not the, a right headspace and I meant to like, take down the information of everyone who sends stuff to like, saying I didn't, and I'm so sorry, but just know that if you send something, it's meant the world to me. Like, it's meant more than you can understand, so thank you.

• 9:39Yasi Salek?

  And that's enough of that.

• 9:42Yasi Salek?

I don't wanna be burnt down housegirl forever. #BurnDownHouseInfluencer. Also, you know, the Instagram, this is so 2025 in such a bad way. The Instagram post that I like dashed off at 5 a.m. just cuz I was like, so many text messages asking, "Did your house burn down?" I have to answer, "Yes, my house burned down." I was like, "Let's just put out a, my house burned down." And then it went viral. Okay, it's quoted in the Washington Post. Okay. Dystopian, but very nice. So, thank you to everyone. And Rob for your nice gifts.

• 10:17Speaker 00

It's okay, it's fine. I'll just take it home. It's alright. I actually brought two bottles of Ohio wine and then I was like, I can't bring three bottles and two of them are basically undrinkable. And so, there's just a bottle of Ohio wine in my hotel room, just staring at me like, why did you shit, why did you bring this via Southwest?

• 10:35Yasi Salek?

Two bottles of sweet table wine?

• 10:37Speaker 00

They fit in the box, man. The other one was Amish themed. I just, there was a buggy on the, I don't think they bottled it, right? I just, I didn't know what I was doing, alright? I panicked a little bit.

• 10:48Yasi Salek?

  I'm so touched.

• 10:49Speaker 00

And this is the, this is the result.

• 10:50Yasi Salek?

I'm grateful. I'm really pleased that you brought it for me. Yeah, that's pretty much what's been going on with you. What's been going on with you?

• 11:00Speaker 00

It's freezing in Ohio. My son, next week, will be portraying Uncle Wes in the Footloose musical. At his middle school, he's got a mustache. It is gonna be a trip to have my 13-year-old son portraying a stuffy adult in a movie that I watched when I was 10 years old. That's going to be very confusing for me, from my, just a chronology standpoint. But I'm very excited about that. He was in Frozen Jr. last year, but he was in the ensemble, right? Like, he was in the winter chorus, etc. But he has a speaking role, he has to play fight. This is gonna be very, very exciting.

• 11:38Yasi Salek?

You do theater when you were a kid?

• 11:40Speaker 00

I did choir. I did like, we sang show tunes and stuff, but I did not act in any capacity, no. Yes, my wife was in like Bye Bye Birdie and stuff, so I think that's where he's getting this bug. But it's very exciting. I'm gonna be very proud.

• 11:56Yasi Salek?

  I'm really happy for him.

• 12:00Speaker 00

And I think that's about it. I feel very...

• 12:03Yasi Salek?

I don't know how much more we can mine the burned down house.

• 12:05Speaker 00

Yeah, it's, we were gonna come out to Talking Heads, Burning Down the House. We had a long conversation.

• 12:10Yasi Salek?

They said it was a bad idea, and I was like, okay.

• 12:13Speaker 00

We asked Sean Fantasy and he said, "That's not a choice I would make, but..." And that's when we decided against it.

• 12:24Yasi Salek?

  Well.

• 12:24Speaker 00

  But now we're... Adam, Elijah.

• 12:26Yasi Salek?

I do have one more thing to say.

• 12:27Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 12:29Yasi Salek?

Of all the, like, really fun... Because you gotta laugh, you know? Of all the funny things that have happened, the... Maybe the funniest is the text message I got from The RealReal. You guys fuck with The RealReal? I think if you're a woman and you have ever sold to The RealReal, you understand the relentlessness with which they will text you being like, "Hi, it's Madison. I'm just checking to see if you have any blah, blah, blah to sell." And so I got a text message the other day, and I was like, "Hey, it's Addison, your RealReal rep. I noticed on the map that your address is in the area that was afflicted by the wildfires. Are you okay?" And it had like a quotation mark at the end. I was like, "Addison, did you copy and paste this 'are you okay' message?" Also, not even like, "Here's a hundred dollar credit.

• 13:15Yasi Salek?

I'm not okay. I have no clothes left, babe. Send me a credit. I could buy some more at The RealReal." Anyways, that was very funny.

• 13:21Speaker 00

I don't even know what that is. What is the real word?

• 13:23Yasi Salek?

It's a... It's a designer resale website where people consign their designer clothing and other mentally ill people like myself buy them. Yeah.

• 13:33Speaker 00

And they also do wellness checks for people whose houses have burned down.

• 13:36Yasi Salek?

They do community outreach to people who have been afflicted by the fires. Yeah. Well, you guys, we're here not to draft all of the precious items that I have lost in the fire, however, to draft soundtracks. That's right. Yes. So we will bring out, at this time, Sean J. Fennessy and Christopher Q. Ryan.

• 14:10Yasi Salek?

Who have graciously agreed to draft with us because you legally cannot say no to me in one calendar year after my house burned down. That's right.

• 14:19Speaker 05

My middle initial is not J. It's not Q either, by the way.

• 14:24Yasi Salek?

What did I just say about my house burning down?

• 14:28Yasi Salek?

It is tonight. As usual, we are tasking Chris Ryan, who's just so good at this, the draft master, to-

• 14:37Speaker 06

I'm not that good at drafting.

• 14:39Speaker 05

  You're pretty efficient.

• 14:40Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 14:41Yasi Salek?

  You're pretty good at drafting.

• 14:42Speaker 05

  Authoritative.

• 14:43Speaker 06

  I try to be.

• 14:44Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 14:45Yasi Salek?

You're pretty good at drafting, just full stop. But also, you just are such, you have such a way with explaining the words and terms clearly in the way I don't not possess.

• 14:55Speaker 06

We're doing soundtracks tonight. I will specify that we are not doing scores, which I needed clarity on. Maybe in the seventh inning of my prep. And, you know, so no John Barry, you know, we're not gonna do any John Williams. It's the soundtracks largely comprised of songs with music and lyrics, right? So we are doing four categories, five categories? Seventies, eighties, nineties, 21st century, concert film.

• 15:29Speaker 06

You can pick, while we're going through the rules here, we'll establish an order. That person can pick anything from any category, and then it's off the board. And then we will be relying on public opinion to determine the winner of the draft. Through your clapping, you know? And I wonder who will win.

• 15:50Yasi Salek?

Please don't be swayed by my personal tragedy. This is a fair and square fight.

• 15:57Yasi Salek?

Sean wouldn't have come otherwise. He knew.

• 16:00Speaker 05

  This is interesting.

• 16:00Speaker 06

Gee, do you think the Dodgers look good this year?

• 16:04Speaker 05

It's like a challenge, like, how bad would your draft have to be?

• 16:07Yasi Salek?

That's what I'm saying. I could just really, like, push it.

• 16:12Speaker 05

A lot of people at home who are like, "Ah, I don't know. That story about Rob's son and Footloose really touched my heart. Uncle Wes, you say? I'm voting for Rob."

• 16:23Speaker 00

  Bad move.

• 16:26Speaker 00

Congratulations, Yasi, on your victory in the draft about to transpire. You have bested us.

• 16:34Speaker 06

I was thinking we could go in order of the way we're seated. And then that would put the onus on Sean to give up the first pick to Yasi as an act of great benevolence.

• 16:46Yasi Salek?

You guys are gonna have to watch his face, though, because Sean is the world's most competitive drafter. Like, I've never met anyone like this, and it's gonna be a real challenge, true.

• 16:55Speaker 06

We're gonna do this snake draft style, so it'll go this way and then that way.

• 17:00Speaker 05

Really others by you, I gotta say.

• 17:04Speaker 00

You could give it to me if you wanna split the difference.

• 17:07Speaker 06

  That'd be pretty funny.

• 17:08Speaker 05

I will happily grant the first selection to Yasi with all comfort and ease in that decision.

• 17:17Speaker 06

So we'll go Yasi, Sean, Rob, me, me, Rob, Sean, Yasi.

• 17:21Yasi Salek?

Can I get fired in this calendar year or no?

• 17:28Speaker 05

I'm an officer of the Spotify corporation. That's all I have to say about that.

• 17:32Speaker 06

Somewhere deep sea is just writing all the new band splains is just like...

• 17:38Speaker 06

Babe, it's so important what they did.

• 17:43Speaker 00

What a goddamn gorgeous, beautiful song.

• 17:45Speaker 06

I'm mentally ill, JK. Love, primal scream.

• 17:49Speaker 00

  Feminism left my body.

• 17:53Yasi Salek?

The AI is gonna be like, "This song fucks." Oh my god, I would be so honored to go first. Thank you so much, Sean, for your graciousness.

• 18:00Speaker 05

  It was my great honor.

• 18:01Speaker 06

Yasi, if you don't mind, at any given point, when you've picked a movie, will you just throw that up there and say what category it is in? We should have markers everywhere.

• 18:10Speaker 05

So we're going this way around?

• 18:11Speaker 06

Yasi, you, after the trade where you got, in return, you got nothing. So, Yasi, you, Rob, me.

• 18:19Yasi Salek?

  Warm feeling in your heart.

• 18:20Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 18:22Yasi Salek?

Do we, just, sorry, this is kind of a dumb question. Just our own draft picks on our own board?

• 18:26Speaker 06

Yes, you do not have to write down my draft picks.

• 18:28Yasi Salek?

  Okay, I'm gonna choose 70s.

• 18:31Speaker 06

  Okay, chronological.

• 18:33Yasi Salek?

Well, yeah, it's just that it was the one I felt the strongest about. And I'm gonna draft the 1978 film Grease.

• 18:51Yasi Salek?

  Is that breaking the rules?

• 18:53Speaker 05

I don't know. I'm merely a guest on this podcast.

• 18:57Yasi Salek?

Why did, we didn't ban musicals, but-

• 19:00Speaker 00

If we objected right now, what would happen to us?

• 19:03Speaker 06

  Get out!

• 19:04Speaker 00

Can three people be struck by lightning on the same stage simultaneously?

• 19:09Yasi Salek?

  Support me or not?

• 19:12Speaker 06

Was, did you make that face because it's a musical? Did you make a face or was I just-

• 19:16Yasi Salek?

  You made the face.

• 19:17Speaker 05

Talking about this backstage, so, um-

• 19:19Yasi Salek?

Sorry, this is an audio-only podcast for some of you, but Sean did make a face.

• 19:22Speaker 05

Yasi looked at me five minutes before she walked out on stage and said, "Why are you making that face?" And I don't know what my face looked like. And I said, "Yasi, this is something that my wife often says to me, 'Why are you making that face?'" And usually it's, "Take that face off your fucking face." But I don't know what my face looks like, so whatever face I made, I don't know.

• 19:45Speaker 06

I thought she said, "Grease," and you almost seemed like Point of Order. That's what I was reading from your face.

• 19:51Yasi Salek?

That's what I thought. There was gonna be an objection.

• 19:52Speaker 05

  That's just my face.

• 19:53Yasi Salek?

You have object, sanding objection face, resting objecting face? Incredible.

• 19:59Speaker 05

  Grease sounds wonderful, Yasi.

• 20:03Yasi Salek?

Well, I thought there might be blowback, but just in case, I did research as I am wont to do, and so much of it was written exclusively for the film, so I feel like it's not just like a straight Broadway-to-film situation.

• 20:17Speaker 06

  Whatever you want, Yasi.

• 20:19Yasi Salek?

  It's not even fun anymore.

• 20:23Speaker 05

Grease was not a stage musical before it was a movie, right?

• 20:26Yasi Salek?

It was not? I don't know. I don't know anything about musicals. Someone said correct.

• 20:29Speaker 05

  It was.

• 20:30Speaker 06

It was. Interesting. When, when was it a stage musical? Before the 70s?

• 20:35Yasi Salek?

  Who's our theater nerds?

• 20:37Speaker 00

Fantastic. Fantastic research for this program.

• 20:40Speaker 05

This is the first overall pick.

• 20:41Speaker 00

This is the first album we're talking about. Nobody knows anything.

• 20:48Speaker 00

Pure vibes up here. We all have the halo. I'm sitting next to someone whose house burned down. And so I think we all have a protective halo around us right now.

• 20:56Speaker 06

Are you looking up Grease on Wikipedia right now?

• 21:00Speaker 06

Do you, can you name one song on Grease other than Summer Love? Just so I know.

• 21:06Speaker 00

  Name three songs, Yasi.

• 21:09Yasi Salek?

Yeah, "Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee." "Lousy, well, virgin." I did that in the talent show. "Go, Go, Go," "Grease Lightning," "Blue Moon," "Born in a Handja." I had this like double album and it like shaped me as a child. I loved this movie. 1971 was the stage musical, so it did predate.

• 21:30Speaker 06

  You're in it.

• 21:30Speaker 05

Yeah, as they say in the film, grease is the word.

• 21:32Yasi Salek?

I just love it. "You're the one that I want." Olivia Newton-John, familiar with her? "Beauty School Dropout." Come on, you guys, this goes so fucking hard. Just four sides. Double disc. Anyways, that's my 1970s draft. Thank you very much.

• 21:57Speaker 05

Just a real death blow to my strategy, taking Grease off the board first overall.

• 22:06Speaker 05

  Boy.

• 22:07Speaker 06

  Sean in shambles.

• 22:08Yasi Salek?

Some of us don't play to beat other people. Some of us play to be.

• 22:12Speaker 06

You're doing crowd work now, what are you standing like?

• 22:18Speaker 05

Yeah, you just turned into Lewis Black there.

• 22:23Speaker 05

I mean, I'm here with the kings and queen of the 90s, so I have to go 90s, right?

• 22:31Yasi Salek?

Yeah, the 90s was like an embarrassment of riches.

• 22:33Speaker 06

Just do like a Twitter thread where you're like, "The 90s are superior to everything."

• 22:37Speaker 00

I did, you went very hard on like the corporate environment that allowed the 90s to flourish.

• 22:43Speaker 05

Did you disagree with that sentiment?

• 22:44Speaker 00

  No, I did not.

• 22:45Speaker 06

But you're like, "Oh, you guys love the 90s, not like me."

• 22:49Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 22:50Speaker 05

I didn't say not like me, I'm a part of this.

• 22:55Speaker 05

I'm gonna go with the 90s. And I'm gonna take Pulp Fiction.

• 23:17Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 23:17Yasi Salek?

  Sure, yeah.

• 23:18Speaker 06

Um, the first scene of Pulp Fiction, right? And the credits roll, and it's the surf music, and the radio station changes and it goes to Jungle Boogie. That's awesome.

• 23:35Speaker 06

  What happened?

• 23:35Yasi Salek?

  It's really hard.

• 23:36Speaker 06

  That was sick.

• 23:37Yasi Salek?

Girl, you'll be a woman sooner, Joverkill, gorge.

• 23:40Speaker 05

  That was good, yeah.

• 23:41Speaker 06

Favorite song on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack?

• 23:43Speaker 05

Hmm, Counting Flowers on the Wall, Statler Brothers. Uh, maybe Never Can Tell, Chuck Berry. That's gotta be mine. Maybe Misery Lou by Dick Dale, the Deltones. Maybe all of them. Here's the thing, I'm sure other soundtracks like this will be chosen, but one of the great things about all the Tarantino soundtracks is the dialogue on the soundtracks, which was a great tradition that I think was started, I think, by Good Morning Vietnam. The Good Morning Vietnam soundtrack, which had, "Good morning Vietnam," all the Robin Williams shtick from the movie. And I think it was because, like, MCA Records pioneered that strategy.

• 24:28Speaker 05

And that was just a way to not have to re-watch Pulp Fiction, but be inside of Pulp Fiction when you listen to the soundtrack. So I love it, so that's my pick.

• 24:36Speaker 07

You know what they call a quarter pounder with cheese in Paris? They don't call it a quarter pounder with cheese? Oh man, they got the metric system. They wouldn't know what the fuck a quarter pounder is. And what do they call it? They call it Royale with cheese.

• 24:50Yasi Salek?

Good one, surprising no one, but it's a good pick.

• 24:54Speaker 05

  It can't all be grease.

• 24:56Yasi Salek?

Had I wanted to get your ass, I could have picked 90s and drafted that. But I don't play like, I don't play dirty like you. Okay, who's next?

• 25:07Speaker 06

  Purple Rain.

• 25:19Speaker 00

I've spent a couple of weeks trying to talk myself out of it, but there's no talking myself out of "Purple Rain", which I honestly believe is the greatest album ever made. Recently, I have come to that conclusion. This record has been with me all my life. "Purple Rain" comes out in 84, I'm six years old. I know Prince is the guy in the bathtub in the "When Doves Cry" video. I know "Purple Rain the Movie" is the movie I'm not allowed to see because of illicit sexual-type content. I grow up, I realize that Prince is one of the most beloved commercially and critically, you know, humans ever. And then, when he died, I was at a baseball game with my dad. We were at Cleveland, it was the Indians at the time,

• 26:03Speaker 00

celebrating my dad's birthday, it was in April. And like, they start playing "Let's Go Crazy" on the organ, right? And I'm like, "Uh-oh", and I start getting the texts or whatever. And I just remember how the tone changed, like, in my family. Like, my younger brother is there, my parents are there. And just the vibe changes completely, right? And we drive home from the game, and we listen to "Purple Rain" the whole way. Like, we find, like, it's like a live version of "Purple Rain the Song", it's like 20 minutes long, the guitar solo was endless. And it's just all four of us in the car, like, just dead silent, like this reverence. And it's one of, it just out of nowhere became like one of the most beautiful, like, resonant music experiences I've ever had in my life, just sitting in the car with my family,

• 26:48Speaker 00

you know, listening to this music that I periodically take for granted, right? Like, it's just in the air. Like, I've had a couple of MRIs just for very minor things. They're like, "What music would you like to listen to?" And I say, "Prince", every time I say "Prince", and every time they start with "Let's Go Crazy", and I'm in the MRI thing, and I hear "dearly beloved", and I start laughing.

• 27:08Speaker 00

And like shaking so much that they have to stop the MRI. They stopped the music. This has happened to me several times.

• 27:16Speaker 00

This is just an album that periodically I'll take for granted. It's always been with me. Ah, sure, it's great, you know, but I put it on again. You know, I get to "I Will Die For You." I get to any song, literally any song. And it's like, no, actually, this is my favorite album ever made by one of my favorite people, you know, favorite artists I've ever known. And it's like a kid watching MTV, you know, it's like a 90s kid watching MTV and he's got "Assless Chaps" now and it's like, holy shit. I just, finally getting to see him live, you know, and just... The single best line of rock criticism ever is Bob Criscow saying, "Mick Jagger should fold up his dick and go home."

• 27:57Speaker 00

Best sentence of rock criticism. We should all metaphorically fold up our dicks and go home as rock critics after that. I was rambling a little bit. "Purple Rain" from the 80s is my pick, absolutely.

• 28:11Yasi Salek?

I am now seeing the error of my grease ways. You know, I had my own personal strategy.

• 28:18Speaker 05

It was like a micro-episode of 60 Songs.

• 28:20Yasi Salek?

Oh, seriously? How lucky are you guys?

• 28:22Speaker 06

You went off the dome with that, though, too.

• 28:23Speaker 05

Really glad I didn't pick "Purple Rain."

• 28:25Yasi Salek?

This is just how he talks. How annoying is that?

• 28:29Speaker 06

You should have been in like Blaze Battles. You could have like...

• 28:33Speaker 05

Rob, when you go home at night and it's just you and your wife and you guys are talking, are you like, "Well, when you think about this song..." "I was in Cleveland in 1998."

• 28:44Speaker 00

  No, thank you.

• 28:48Speaker 06

It's been really nice here tonight. I feel like it's really warm, it's really supportive. I'm sorry, we're gonna change that up a little bit. I'm gonna take "Trainspotting."

• 28:55Yasi Salek?

I already knew, babe. I didn't even put it on my list, honey.

• 28:58Speaker 06

  You're not?

• 28:59Yasi Salek?

Because I knew you were gonna take it. It's also not my favorite.

• 29:03Speaker 06

Isn't it of the 90s? Okay.

• 29:06Yasi Salek?

It's a great soundtrack. It's not my favorite, "The Embarrassment of Riches" in the 90s.

• 29:09Speaker 06

I would say that the 90s soundtracks kind of have this through line where they're mostly like mixtape soundtracks, obviously, but some of these have a collection of songs that feel like they didn't exist before the movie. And Trainspotting is like that for me. Like, you know, Born Slippy was this huge song. Sing was on an earlier Blur album. Statue-esque is, you know, like this sleeper song. But I felt like hearing those songs together was like this coherent aesthetic statement that went perfectly with the movie itself. And probably Lust for Life is a really good example of that. It's a huge classic, but is like the first opening frames of the movie, the drumbeat. You're just like, holy shit, here we go, let's steal some heroin.

• 30:00Speaker 06

So Trainspotting is my 90s pick, and I have the benefit of being on the turn here.

• 30:06Speaker 05

You want to write it on your board?

• 30:07Speaker 06

I will in a second. I will in a second.

• 30:09Speaker 05

  Could you do it now?

• 30:10Speaker 00

I don't want to sit here and wait for him to write that down.

• 30:12Yasi Salek?

Could you actually do it? The rules say it should go.

• 30:16Speaker 06

I'm gonna zag and go concert film and go Last Waltz.

• 30:32Speaker 06

  R.I.P. Garth Hudson.

• 30:35Speaker 06

Perfect film, perfect concert, perfect band, to name the band. And I was just watching the performance of The Weight with the Staples singer the other day, and I was like, music pinnacle. Absolute pinnacle of music.

• 30:48Yasi Salek?

  Music rocks.

• 30:49Speaker 06

  Yeah. Music fucking rocks.

• 30:51Yasi Salek?

  Dude's rock.

• 30:52Speaker 06

So I will do Trainspotting and Last Waltz, and I will go home.

• 30:54Yasi Salek?

Oh, Chris Ryan. Fun fact about me, I've still never seen The Last Waltz.

• 30:59Speaker 06

  Never seen it.

• 31:00Yasi Salek?

I've never seen it. I know, they're gonna take my podcast away.

• 31:02Speaker 05

I was gonna wear the Van Morrison purple velour outfit tonight, but didn't.

• 31:07Yasi Salek?

Can't laugh at that, because I don't know what you're talking about.

• 31:09Speaker 05

  He's in jumping jacks.

• 31:12Speaker 05

He does like kicks, you know Van Morrison? Who's just a wee Irishman, you know? He's just doing kicks on stage.

• 31:18Yasi Salek?

  Like a leprechaun?

• 31:19Speaker 05

  What's that?

• 31:20Yasi Salek?

  Like a little leprechaun?

• 31:21Speaker 05

  Not that sure.

• 31:26Speaker 01

• 32:12Speaker 00

All right, so it's back to me. Yeah. I am going to do concert film as well. I'm gonna do Aretha Franklin, "Amazing Grace."

• 32:35Speaker 00

The album was 1972. The movie was locked forever for weird, vague, technical reasons. I think it finally came out in 2018. But it's the crowd for me. You know, I love "Stop Making Sense." I love "The Last Waltz." But what I love most about live albums is the interaction with the crowd. I think about James Brown at the Apollo, Folsom Prison Blues, like just the roar of the crowd, like up to Erykah Badu doing "Tyrone." Like what I need from a live album is that feeling of connection. And it's just the way, the rapture of the crowd. You know, she hits like six amazing high notes per song. Like it's just, I really do think it's like...

• 33:18Speaker 00

The most towering vocal performance by anyone ever for an hour and a half. It's just unbelievable and the crowd is just right there with her the entire time. I think it was filmed in LA, you know, at the Baptist church and I, every time I watch it, you know, you just focus on even the crowd behind her, like when she sings Amazing Grace, the choir is arranged behind her and the choir, like the people backing her up are so blown away by what she's doing. They're just, you just, you see it in their faces, like just the shock and the delight. You know, as much as I love The Last Waltz, Stop Making Sense, whatever it is, like just the awe that she inspires both audibly in the crowd and visibly

• 34:01Speaker 00

in, you know, the, her collaborators and people on stage, like James Cleveland's playing piano during Amazing Grace, he walks, he sits down in a pew and cries for the last half of the song while she's singing Amazing Grace. I, it's just, it's unbelievable to me. So my pick for concert movie is Aretha Franklin, Amazing Grace.

• 34:20Yasi Salek?

Really good one. I don't, I don't know, you guys. Rob's kinda winning.

• 34:26Yasi Salek?

How's Burn Down or Not? Rob's kinda fucking killing us.

• 34:31Speaker 06

  That's a great pick.

• 34:32Yasi Salek?

  That's such a good pick.

• 34:33Speaker 06

  Sidney Pollak? Directed that?

• 34:35Speaker 05

Did direct it. And when I think gospel choirs and Aretha Franklin, I think Sidney Pollak. I think the cinema of Sidney, yeah.

• 34:43Yasi Salek?

Are you guys big concert film bros, guys?

• 34:46Speaker 05

  What do you mean?

• 34:47Yasi Salek?

Like you like them a lot?

• 34:49Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 34:49Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 34:51Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 34:51Speaker 06

Do you remember in Rattle and Hum? When Bono's like, "Rock and Roll stops the traffic."

• 34:58Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 34:58Speaker 06

  I live by that.

• 34:59Yasi Salek?

  Dude's, dude's rock.

• 35:01Speaker 06

Am I borging ya? I didn't mean to bog ya. I am the reason there's so much traffic in LA and it's because I'm listening to Rock and Roll. I'm just like...

• 35:09Speaker 05

When he, what does he say when he addresses the leader of the free world?

• 35:13Speaker 06

He says, "Excuse me, Mr. President!" Now you guys don't know that?

• 35:17Yasi Salek?

  Mr. President.

• 35:18Speaker 06

  He used to call up.

• 35:19Speaker 00

"God isn't short of cash, mister," is what he's, yes. It's better when he says it, obviously.

• 35:24Speaker 06

  Obviously.

• 35:26Speaker 05

Why'd you just start talking about Rattle and Hum?

• 35:28Speaker 06

Yeah. Because she was asking if we liked concert films. And I was just giving you an example.

• 35:33Speaker 00

I'm so glad I was writing for most of that conversation.

• 35:36Speaker 05

  Do you like them?

• 35:38Yasi Salek?

Uh, eh. There's like a few that I like, but like by and far, I don't love them.

• 35:43Speaker 05

I should probably lea-- it's my pick, so I should leave one for you, right?

• 35:48Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 35:49Speaker 05

I shouldn't be an absolute demon.

• 35:51Yasi Salek?

You can take whatever you want, babe. I can handle it.

• 35:53Speaker 06

You can do what you want to do.

• 35:55Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 35:55Speaker 05

Don't do that to me. I'm gonna go 70s.

• 36:00Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 36:01Speaker 05

And I'm gonna pick what I think is the best soundtrack of the 1970s.

• 36:07Yasi Salek?

That's the gist of the draft.

• 36:13Speaker 05

Have I just solved drafting? Which is "Superfly" by Curtis Mayfield.

• 36:30Speaker 05

This is something that more filmmakers should do, which is to hire one person and say, "Make the sound of this movie." No movie sounds like "Superfly," which is an okay blaxploitation movie, but feels like one of the most important films ever made because of the depth and sincerity that Curtis Mayfield imbues in the movie. And it's like, perfect time, perfect place for where movies were at that time and where the sound of kind of like contemporary R&B and funk colliding together were. But it's like, both sets the template for a certain kind of R&B for the next 30 years, but also is completely unreplicable. Like, there's nothing that sounds quite like it, even though there were a ton of records that came out at that time attached to movies like it. So, "Superfly" is the pick.

• 37:17Speaker 06

  It's back to you.

• 37:18Yasi Salek?

He doesn't double-- oh, I doubles at me.

• 37:21Speaker 06

  Oh, a double?

• 37:22Speaker 00

  You double.

• 37:22Yasi Salek?

  I double.

• 37:23Speaker 00

Because you were first. Because he let you go first.

• 37:26Yasi Salek?

Okay, I'm gonna go 90s. And I'm gonna-- wait, we talk about it first, then we write it. I was really excited to write on the board. I'm gonna go Romeo and Juliet.

• 37:37Speaker 05

  Mary Yasi.

• 37:49Yasi Salek?

Challenging for me for many reasons. Obviously, you know, I'm a 90s girly. There's so many good ones. And I also just didn't. We've done episodes on some of them that I just don't want to talk about again. And it's not that they're not my favorites and they really deserve the shine. But I was just being a mindful podcaster. And I was like, I like these just as much as those and I just don't want to rehash.

• 38:10Speaker 05

Was this between, was it between this and Judgment Night for you? And you thought I did a Judgment Night episode?

• 38:14Yasi Salek?

  Singles.

• 38:15Speaker 05

Now, Singles is on the list for sure. Yeah. Well, this is a weird soundtrack. I seriously considered it as well.

• 38:23Yasi Salek?

It's, okay, to Chris's earlier point, it invented Love Fool. I mean, it existed, but like, it made that song like, go crazy. And it just has like, it's just such a cool, weird mix of songs that are all, pretty much all really good. Number One Crush, kinda in my opinion, the best garbage song. We Stan Art Alexakis up here. And Local God. Also, a lot of the songs were written for the film, which is so like, Local God, like, name checks Romeo, like, you do that Romeo? Also, I wanted to ask you guys, do you guys feel like a local god when you're with the boys?

• 39:02Speaker 00

Sure. Never with the boys, unless you meet my own boys. And I am, no, I do not feel like a local god at all.

• 39:10Speaker 05

Do you think that Chris and I just like, sit in a Corvette and drink Miller Lite and listen to Everclear songs?

• 39:16Speaker 00

  Yes, we do.

• 39:17Speaker 05

Because that is what we do.

• 39:18Yasi Salek?

You know that I can't even imagine you guys separate from each other. Like, in my mind, you live in the same house with your spouses and your child.

• 39:28Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 39:29Yasi Salek?

You're never apart. But there's like, One Inch Punch, bro. You ever fucking go back and listen to that One Inch Punch song? Which is Justin Warfield from She Wants Revenge. It's a really good song. Kissing You.

• 39:43Speaker 00

Desiree, I was gonna say, you gotta do that.

• 39:44Yasi Salek?

Crying, Nelly Hooper snapped with that one, Ben.

• 39:47Speaker 06

Is this before OK Computer, right?

• 39:49Speaker 00

I was gonna say, because Exit Music was supposed to be...

• 39:52Yasi Salek?

Talk Show was a B-side on, um...

• 39:57Yasi Salek?

Street Spirit, Fade Out, which had already come out. That single with the B-side had already come out. Talk Show is a god-tier radio head song.

• 40:06Speaker 05

  My favorites.

• 40:08Yasi Salek?

And exit music for a film, which isn't actually on the soundtrack, but is in the film.

• 40:11Speaker 05

  In the movie, right?

• 40:12Yasi Salek?

It's in the movie. Everybody's Free to Feel Good, as covered by Quindin' Tarver. A child in the movie. Also does One Doves Cry. Just, it's a random lot of Swedish people on here. I'm not really sure why, but... And then when they did covers, they had like, like, the woman from Soul to Soul does the cover of, um... What is the song? This is why I bring notes, because I have no brain space. Young Hearts Run Free. It's Kim Mazel from... It just, I just thought, there's like, it's really thoughtful and like, cool. And it like, touched on like, club music in an interesting way. And it's really sexy and like, this is, I don't know. I thought, I thought it was the best soundtrack of the 90s.

• 40:53Speaker 06

Okay, so that's your 90s pick?

• 40:56Yasi Salek?

Yeah. Oh, and then, now it's me again?

• 40:58Speaker 05

You guys are pro Baz Luhrmann?

• 41:00Yasi Salek?

Hmm, hit or miss for me personally.

• 41:04Speaker 05

  These are my friends.

• 41:06Yasi Salek?

  I don't know if I've...

• 41:07Speaker 06

  Oh, no, I saw Gatsby.

• 41:08Speaker 05

Romeo and Juliet, and I have not understood a single thing he's done since then.

• 41:11Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, me neither.

• 41:12Speaker 05

I have no idea what he's talking about. In Romeo and Juliet, I'm like, this is such a great idea. Modernity with these old stories and bringing this cool new stuff to something old. And ever since then...

• 41:21Yasi Salek?

  You know, he's Australian.

• 41:22Speaker 05

  He should shut up.

• 41:24Speaker 05

He's Australian, yeah. What does that mean?

• 41:25Speaker 06

A show called Australia, and nobody watched it.

• 41:28Speaker 05

  It was a movie.

• 41:29Yasi Salek?

I just feel it explains a lot, is all I'm saying.

• 41:31Speaker 06

He cut it into a series.

• 41:32Speaker 05

He recut it into a streaming television show for Hulu called Far Away Downs.

• 41:37Yasi Salek?

Why can't I be normal? These people didn't even bring their Google Doc printed out on 70 pages on their dad's printer, because...

• 41:45Speaker 06

Rob has deeply emotional anecdotes committed to memory. Sean and I are like, let's, let's get in our car and stare at each other.

• 41:51Yasi Salek?

I'm going, what? Oh, my god. This is a family show. I'm going 2000s.

• 41:59Speaker 06

  Great.

• 42:00Yasi Salek?

  And I'm doing Garden State.

• 42:05Yasi Salek?

  That's right, bitch.

• 42:06Speaker 05

  I respect it.

• 42:09Yasi Salek?

I had to think long and hard about this, but I was like, I'm sorry, you can't fucking deny The Garden State. Whatever you think about it, and you know famously, I'm the biggest hater of the 2000s. To me, they largely should not exist. Ugly, terrible time with terrible music and terrible fashion. Well, some good exceptions, but like, my, my dog Zachary the Braff, he snapped on this one, babe. He went crazy. You know, he picked all the songs. He won a Grammy. He won a Grammy? Correct. For music supervision? Yeah, for the soundtrack. He literally won a fucking Grammy. That's great. So he's, is he three quarters of the way to EGOT now? Where is, it's just waiting on that Tony.

• 42:53Yasi Salek?

Don't count him out, babe. I could see him singing and dancing. Four time best actor winner, Zach Braff. "Don't Panic" is an amazing song. That Coldplay album, that whole Parachutes album. We have discussed this. Yeah, we love it. The shins, new slang. Okay. It will change your life. Yeah, it will change. And yes, was that a corny? Good song that got, that got saddled with that line, you know? Yes, and but what, they also got saddled with a bunch of fucking money. I'm sure they're fine. They were not gonna, they would not be working today if that line didn't. To me, it's not in the aftermath, the song, it's the meme of putting on the headphones. Cause the song is good now as, as it was then.

• 43:37Yasi Salek?

I think what's happened, which I was a little, I don't know if you guys felt this way. I was like a little, to really try and church and state the movie and the film. Because sometimes I have so much affection for the film that it like bleeds over into loving the soundtrack more than I should. This is, I think, has the opposite experience for people. Like, I think the soundtrack is catching strays because people think the movie is so corny and annoying, which is actually honestly, it's not that bad. Did it invent kind of the manic pixie dream girl? Yes. Are there many annoying parts? Sure. But like, the soundtrack is innocent.

• 44:17Speaker 05

  You like the soundtrack?

• 44:19Speaker 00

Yeah, I do. I remember seeing it in the theater. And I remember like, this is gonna be a really big deal. And this is gonna be annoying after a while. But then it's gonna come back around. And then like 10, 15 years, somebody sitting next to me is gonna draft it in a podcast draft, which is not a concept I understand at the time. But I just have the vague idea that all of this is gonna happen. I can just see the cycle in my head.

• 44:39Yasi Salek?

I know you like the business aspect of things. You like business.

• 44:43Speaker 05

  I like the what?

• 44:44Yasi Salek?

The business aspects of things. You're always going on about it on your podcast.

• 44:51Yasi Salek?

You're always like, they paid $110 million for this film. What was the studio thinking?

• 44:56Speaker 05

Yasi discovered the big picture like three weeks ago. And she's like, I've been listening to your podcast. Wow, interesting choices.

• 45:02Yasi Salek?

That is right. I'm a big pics. What are the people called that listen to the big picture? Do they have a fan?

• 45:06Speaker 05

  Geniuses, that's what they're called.

• 45:08Yasi Salek?

Yeah, I'm a standout. Did I work here for two full years without having ever heard one single 10 seconds of that? Correct. But no, it's great. But I just think that this movie was made for like $3 million or something. And he like sent the script to each musician to like ask them. There's a Simon and Garfunkel song on this soundtrack. Colin Hay, my dog, my guy. You want me to stop talking at my own show?

• 45:36Speaker 05

  That was your second pick?

• 45:37Speaker 06

Yeah, she got Romeo and Juliet in Garden State.

• 45:40Speaker 05

  I don't understand.

• 45:41Yasi Salek?

  By Iron and Wine.

• 45:42Speaker 05

But you didn't take the concert. I don't, I left the concert film for you to take.

• 45:48Yasi Salek?

You guys are really, you think you have me figured out. Like you think you have me in a box and you don't. I knew what you guys were gonna pick.

• 45:55Speaker 06

She's bringing Manic Pixie Dream Girl back.

• 45:57Yasi Salek?

  I'm not like other girls.

• 46:01Yasi Salek?

The AI can say that too. Just I don't know if you guys know that. I'm not like other girls, so.

• 46:06Speaker 05

Can I ask the men on the panel to advise me? Like, am I supposed to take the concert film now?

• 46:13Speaker 06

  Yes, yes.

• 46:14Speaker 00

Look at me, dude. I don't wanna get involved.

• 46:15Speaker 05

  I don't wanna win.

• 46:18Speaker 06

You're not going to. You could pick, you could pick like anything right now and she will win. I think it's like, it's cool.

• 46:26Yasi Salek?

I will win because I have the love and support of my coworkers and the beautiful audience. So no matter what happens, unlike Sean, I don't care who wins the draft.

• 46:38Yasi Salek?

I'm gonna go home to the beautiful t-shirts that people sent me.

• 46:40Speaker 05

When I arrive at the pearly gates and St. Peter says, "How many drafts did you win?" And I say, "318," and he says, "Come right in, sir."

• 46:46Yasi Salek?

Yeah, that's how it works. Totally.

• 46:51Speaker 05

  Okay.

• 46:51Yasi Salek?

I need to write my things, but yeah, go ahead. Is this because you're gonna pick Talking Heads? Go ahead.

• 46:55Speaker 05

Yeah, and Concert Film, I'll take Stop Making Sense. I feel like it would be weird to go any further in this draft without taking that film, which is, in my opinion, the best concert movie of all time. Obviously, it just was in theaters again last year. Did you guys go see it in a movie theater? Recorded a podcast with Rob about that film and how spiritual and beautiful and exciting and stupid and fun it is. The screening that I went to at Vidiot's here in Los Angeles, every single person stood up and danced during the movie. It was, I never had a movie experience, movie-going experience like that in my life. And Talking Heads, I think, are the best band since The Beatles and maybe the best band, period, since The Beatles. I don't know if there's been another band that is more meaningful to me.

• 47:40Speaker 05

So, that's the movie I'm picking.

• 47:50Yasi Salek?

Also, you didn't mention that, I think the most, sorry, I'm talking with my back to the audience. I feel like one of the most impressive things about that one is that, like, the songs are better than they are on the album.

• 48:01Speaker 00

  I agree completely.

• 48:02Yasi Salek?

Like, it's like, that's not, that's not that common. We talked about it on the Talking Heads episode, but like, you usually don't like the live version better, but like, almost across the board on that album, the live versions are better, which is truly phenomenal.

• 48:14Speaker 00

The lamp for me. It's naive melody. The lamp is one of...

• 48:18Yasi Salek?

But we're not talking about the film, we're just talking about the soundtrack.

• 48:20Speaker 00

That's true, but it's still, I can see the lamp when I hear it.

• 48:26Speaker 05

Rob, you're up, man. You once dressed like David Byrne from the film.

• 48:30Speaker 00

  I did.

• 48:30Yasi Salek?

In a prom suit, remember? I was like, "Can I expense a big suit?" And you were like, you know, I remember exactly what you said. You were like, "I did not realize you liked dressing up so much." And I told you, "I'm an entertainer, and I live to entertain." And I looked great.

• 48:47Speaker 00

You all picked 90s already, didn't you? Yeah, you did. Okay.

• 48:50Yasi Salek?

And there's so much left, right?

• 48:51Speaker 00

I'm not worried about that, then. All right, I'm gonna do the 2000s and beyond. It's Josie and the Pussycats.

• 48:58Yasi Salek?

  I know, that's so good.

• 49:10Yasi Salek?

It was on my list, Rob.

• 49:12Speaker 00

  In 2001?

• 49:16Speaker 00

If you were a certain sort of power pop, Cars, Go-Go's, you know, moving into Fountains of Wayne sort of person, just the, the people behind this, right? Adam Schlesinger, of course, Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleos. Babyface, out of nowhere.

• 49:30Yasi Salek?

  He's produced a lot of...

• 49:31Speaker 00

Adam Duritz, Jane Wieland from the Go-Go's. I just, and the, the songs are, I, I feel like pop punk and power pop, you know, as we move into the Warped Tour era, like, it's just boys talking about how angry they are and how hot all the girls around them are, like, that's the subject matter of so much power pop and pop punk going forward, and I just feel like this is a nice, beautiful oasis, you know, without that sort of toxic energy. Like, so much of the music and even culture from 2001 specifically has this weird sort of ugly sheen for me that I can't figure out if that's because I was just a weird young adult and it just struck me weird and, or it's like the...

• 50:09Yasi Salek?

You're an ally, a male ally.

• 50:11Speaker 00

That's exactly right. I was too sensitive. Thank you, thank you. But there's, I like that this flopped at first. This has like Scott Pilgrim energy, right? Like, I think it's better that it was the people who saw it in real time and really loved it, it was theirs for a long time, and now it's coming back around, you know, getting a lot more esteem, you know? In the same way that Scott Pilgrim thing, I, you know, the, the, like, almost Marxist sort of anti-commercialism message of the film, I think, really resonates now. Like, I love that nobody understood it at the time, but everyone gets it now, right? And so, my, my pick is Josie and the Pussycats.

• 50:47Yasi Salek?

Oh, good. Matthew Sweet, Matthew Sweet is involved in this?

• 50:51Speaker 05

  Right, Matthew Sweet.

• 50:52Yasi Salek?

Kay Hanley from Letters to Cleos is the voice of Josie?

• 50:55Speaker 05

What was the boy band's name in that movie? Dujour?

• 50:58Speaker 00

Dujour. Dujour. Dujour means friendship, Dujour means seatbelts. They have a song called "Backdoor Lover" that I was playing on my Bluetooth in my hotel room, and I was like, "I'm gonna get kicked out of this hotel room right now." I, I erred in not bringing up Dujour, thank you very much.

• 51:16Speaker 05

  Genius movie.

• 51:17Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 51:19Speaker 06

For 2000's, Yasi taught me it was okay to be not weird. So, I'll take Royal Tenenbaums. Just under the wire there, 2001, I think it was, right? Needle in the Hay, possibly the best needle drop of the century.

• 51:47Speaker 06

These Days, the Vince Guaraldi Trio, the Beautiful... Using all these soundtrack songs also as texture, also as score, even though it's like, you know, like, because they're just quick cut chopped up. It's just such a genius way of using it, and there's no bad songs on this soundtrack, so...

• 52:06Yasi Salek?

  It's a good choice.

• 52:07Speaker 05

Great moment for Van Morrison as well. A credible Van Morrison lineup for you.

• 52:12Speaker 06

Very pro Van Morrison lineup, yeah.

• 52:14Yasi Salek?

I didn't pick this one specifically because I felt it had too many Mark Mothersbaugh...

• 52:22Yasi Salek?

Like, it just didn't feel as strong to me as... I'm not arguing.

• 52:27Speaker 06

Yeah, but if it has These Days, Judy is a punk and Needle in the Hay...

• 52:30Yasi Salek?

But it was also like, I think I was like, I think when I was looking at this, I was getting so excited about things that like marked their era. And I felt like Garden State so marked its era. This is a great one.

• 52:41Speaker 05

Wouldn't feel that way about Gwyneth coming off the bus to These Days? That's like, that's the 2001 to me.

• 52:48Yasi Salek?

You guys are once again conflating the drops of songs in the movie with the soundtrack as it stands when you listen to it. Those are different things.

• 52:56Speaker 06

We're interpreting the album as a piece of the film, yeah.

• 53:00Speaker 05

And when I think of 1978 and what it represented, I think of Grease. That's really Grease. Being Born, yes.

• 53:09Yasi Salek?

Other than that, our performance, so I had two real weird choices.

• 53:14Speaker 05

  That would've been good.

• 53:15Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, it was on there.

• 53:16Speaker 06

  So I have 80s and 70s left.

• 53:19Yasi Salek?

  Couldn't choose performance.

• 53:20Speaker 06

For 80s, I'll go Repo Man.

• 53:21Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 53:22Yasi Salek?

  Repo Man's so good.

• 53:32Speaker 06

I was just watching this the other day. How about music that sounds like the place the movie is set?

• 53:39Yasi Salek?

Or of the era. I mean, it's also very, it's very contemporary.

• 53:42Speaker 06

So this is my era-appropriate one. I don't have anything profound to say about this. It's just fucking awesome.

• 53:46Yasi Salek?

  Fucking rules, yeah.

• 53:48Speaker 06

So yeah, those are my two tenon bombs on Repo Man.

• 53:55Speaker 07

That's a good pick for you.

• 53:57Speaker 00

I lost my marker. I don't know where my marker went. I'm sitting here. It has to be somewhere in like a five-foot radius around me. I have no idea where it is. I don't feel like looking for it. So this is my board, and that's the way it's gonna stay, just so you know. Nah, it's alright. It's fine this way. I've been... Okay, well, thank you.

• 54:15Speaker 05

  Where could it have gone?

• 54:16Speaker 06

  I don't know.

• 54:17Speaker 00

I really don't know. Is it... It's amazing. It's my superpower, honestly. This is why... My wallet is probably gone too, and I just don't know it yet. It's under the carpet over there. I'm like Houdini.

• 54:30Speaker 05

I think Chris probably just has them both.

• 54:32Speaker 06

  Probably.

• 54:34Speaker 05

Chris, was the original title of the Watch TV party, and you changed it?

• 54:38Speaker 00

  Ooh, that's good.

• 54:39Speaker 06

It would've been good. When Andy... When I lose Andy, I'll start a podcast called TV Party.

• 54:44Yasi Salek?

  Such a good title.

• 54:45Speaker 06

  TV Party?

• 54:46Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 54:46Speaker 06

I'm sure there's a podcast called TV Party.

• 54:48Yasi Salek?

Well, there could be a better one, like yours.

• 54:52Speaker 00

You have 70s left, is that correct?

• 54:54Speaker 06

  I have 70s left.

• 54:55Speaker 00

Okay, so I better make sure you don't take The Muppet Movie.

• 55:01Speaker 09

Someday we'll find it, The Rainbow Connection, The Lovers, The Dreamers, and Me.

• 55:12Speaker 00

Two things about The Muppet Movie. I was in a medium stressful errand running situation. I don't remember what it was. I was in like a Kohl's, returning something, and I didn't have the thing. So I was like, and The Rainbow Connection came on, and I was instantly soothed. I became so serene. There's something about the melodic quality of The Rainbow Connection, that it's really one of the greatest songs of all time, while you're listening to it. We got moving right along, right? We got a few jams, but I was in the Spotify office today, and I was listening to it again, and there's a song I completely forgot about, where it's Kermit the Frog and Rolf, the piano-playing dog. And Kermit is like downtrodden,

• 55:53Speaker 00

and they're in a bar, and Rolf is like, "You look like you need a drink." And Kermit orders a grasshopper.

• 56:02Speaker 00

And Rolf, Rolf starts talking about, "Oh, that's why I don't mess with women. I go home, I have a couple of drinks, and I go to bed." And I started laughing so hard that Jonathan Kerma, my producer, who was sitting two stations down from me, stood up and walked over, was like, "Rob, what are you doing?" And I had to explain to him, it's the Muppet Movie, right? And like, Rolf and Kerma, it's hilarious. And the look on Kerma's face is why I work from home. I can't turn on a microphone, I lost my marker. This is who I am. But this is, I had just a sacred moment with the Muppet soundtrack today

• 56:45Speaker 00

that other people were unfortunate enough to witness. But it was the funniest thing that I'd ever heard in my entire life, was Rolf saying, "I go home, I drink two beers, and I go to bed." The Muppet Movie.

• 56:59Yasi Salek?

  Good one.

• 57:02Speaker 09

I finish work, I go home, read a book, have a couple of beers, take myself for a walk, and go to bed. Nice and simple. Stay away from women, that's my motto.

• 57:14Speaker 05

I think that's an amazing pick.

• 57:17Yasi Salek?

The story, the coles, everything. 10 out of 10.

• 57:20Speaker 05

The last song in that movie, when it's like, "Life's like a movie, write your own ending." That's crack. That is incredible stuff.

• 57:28Speaker 06

Do you think these songs are good, independent of them being sung by Muppets?

• 57:34Speaker 05

You just gotta get over it, man. Just like, have a heart.

• 57:37Speaker 06

This is content. I'm just asking. If it was like a dude singing that song...

• 57:42Speaker 05

If it was like Iggy Pop?

• 57:44Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 57:45Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 57:46Speaker 06

  Okay.

• 57:47Yasi Salek?

You like the Cameron Winter album.

• 57:49Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 57:50Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 57:50Speaker 06

  What, I'm just asking.

• 57:51Yasi Salek?

  No, we both love it.

• 57:52Speaker 06

Do you think he's a Muppet?

• 57:53Yasi Salek?

But I'm like, you don't like Muppets singing?

• 57:59Speaker 06

Just to Yasi's point about us conflating the film and the music, I would, I would just ask if, if you, if you would just, if you think that these songs are quality? Or is it quality 'cause Fozzy Bear...

• 58:16Speaker 00

Van Morrison sang "The Rainbow Connection." Would it be beloved? That's your question.

• 58:20Speaker 06

  That's what I'm wondering.

• 58:20Yasi Salek?

If Van Morrison sang "Newslang", also wouldn't hit as hard, you know?

• 58:25Speaker 00

Van Morrison will change your life.

• 58:28Speaker 05

Do you need some Ohio wine? It means it loosened up a little bit.

• 58:33Speaker 06

  It's your turn, brother.

• 58:36Yasi Salek?

  My notes.

• 58:38Speaker 05

I had my eye on Repo Man.

• 58:41Speaker 05

I lost it to Chris. So I'm going with Say Anything for my 80s pick.

• 58:47Speaker 05

Which is an amazing soundtrack, obviously has an iconic needle drop, Within Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel, a song that is still beautiful to this day.

• 59:06Speaker 05

Cult of Personality by Living Color, a jam of all jams, and one of my favorite songs of all time, Within Your Reach by The Replacements.

• 59:17Yasi Salek?

I think that's my favorite Replacements song.

• 59:19Speaker 05

Which is not like any Replacements song. It's so different from what they do, but it is such a perfect Paul Westerberg song.

• 59:26Yasi Salek?

It used to be a proper country. You would put that on a soundtrack.

• 59:30Speaker 06

What's Lily Taylor's ex-boyfriend named in this movie? I forget.

• 59:34Speaker 05

  Joe.

• 59:34Speaker 06

  Joe lies.

• 59:35Speaker 05

Joe, yeah. Joe is always lying. Why does he always lie? And Red Hot Chili Peppers' Cheap Trick, Joe Satriani, there's a ton of great songs in this. And this is really the beginning of the Cameron Crowe master of the soundtrack moment. So for 1980s, Say Anything.

• 59:55Yasi Salek?

  Want to go twice now?

• 59:56Speaker 00

  Oh, you.

• 59:57Speaker 06

  You go twice.

• 59:58Speaker 00

  You finish, you finish.

• 1:00:00Yasi Salek?

  I already went twice, didn't I?

• 1:00:03Speaker 06

Once, then you went back around, you went twice, now you go twice again.

• 1:00:07Yasi Salek?

I truly can't understand that. It doesn't matter how many times I do it.

• 1:00:10Speaker 06

But this, you will get to finish out.

• 1:00:12Yasi Salek?

So I just do two more and then, because everyone else has everything. No.

• 1:00:14Speaker 06

No, we all have one more.

• 1:00:15Speaker 00

You have to stay onstage when you're done with yours, if that's what you're asking.

• 1:00:19Yasi Salek?

  I'm gonna go home.

• 1:00:20Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 1:00:20Yasi Salek?

  Okay.

• 1:00:21Speaker 00

You go home and watch The Last Waltz, perhaps.

• 1:00:23Yasi Salek?

Should I do both 80s and performance film?

• 1:00:26Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 1:00:26Yasi Salek?

A concert film? Okay. Damn, 80s is tough for me, you guys, right now. You guys have suggestions?

• 1:00:37Yasi Salek?

Do I go with my heart, or do I try to win?

• 1:00:45Yasi Salek?

  Okay, okay, okay.

• 1:00:46Speaker 05

  Why not both?

• 1:00:47Yasi Salek?

Why not both? I know, it's true. Sean's like, "I do both." Stop.

• 1:00:55Yasi Salek?

I think I'm gonna go with Times Square from 1980.

• 1:01:10Yasi Salek?

Okay, it just... Is it the best movie in the world? No, but it's a fun movie, it's cool. The soundtrack is fucking amazing. I learned that it was because the producer was the president of RSO Records and they had also put out Saturday Night Fever and Grease, my favorite soundtrack. And so he had a ton of money and he wanted to make another like... It's like The Pretenders, Talk of the Town, Roxy Music, Gary Newman is on here, Down in the Park, Talking Heads, Life During Wartime, Peanut Butter Song, XTC. They're just... I can't... I don't have all my notes, I can't tell you the rest. But it's just Ramones, like, it has, I think, Walk on the Wild Side by Lou Reed. Does that sound right to you guys? It definitely has a Lou Reed song. I can't remember which one, because my notes are not in order.

• 1:01:55Yasi Salek?

Anyways, it's an incredible soundtrack and it's also like... The thing that I like where it's like, it's about this punk girl making music in Times Square with her new friend and it has all this punk and new wave on it and it's really like turn of 1980. So that is my choice for 1980s. Have you guys all chosen 80s? Has everyone chosen 80s? I have 90s left, so yeah. You still have 80s?

• 1:02:23Speaker 05

No, Christopher Webo, man. I have 70s left. Purple Rain?

• 1:02:26Yasi Salek?

None of us chose Pretty in Pink, that's really good. That was why I was stuck between.

• 1:02:31Speaker 05

  You could've just chosen it.

• 1:02:32Yasi Salek?

  What?

• 1:02:33Speaker 05

  You could've just chosen it.

• 1:02:34Yasi Salek?

No, I know, but I think, I think what I just chose is...

• 1:02:37Speaker 05

  What about showing your flair?

• 1:02:38Yasi Salek?

I just genuinely enjoy that soundtrack better than the... I love the Pretty Imping soundtrack and it has those iconic moments, but like, as like, an interesting collection of music, I think Times Square is better. Also Mick Jagger almost played the Tim Curry character, did you know that? I have a question for concert film. Does the soundtrack have had to come out physically?

• 1:03:00Speaker 06

  I don't know what that...

• 1:03:03Speaker 06

Well, like, do you mean, like, could I have watched a concert on YouTube? And that those songs are like... But what do you mean?

• 1:03:09Yasi Salek?

Like, did they have to have sold the soundtrack? Pick it, man.

• 1:03:14Speaker 06

It's all good, Yasi, you can just pick it, yeah.

• 1:03:17Yasi Salek?

I'm... I choose Madonna, Truth or Dare. Great, great.

• 1:03:30Yasi Salek?

They never sold that as a CD, so I didn't know if that was, that was okay, but... It's a concert film, right? It's a concert film, it's so fucking sick. I watched... No one has been cooler or more beautiful than Madonna was in 1991 in that movie. It's astonishing. And also, it's so many good songs. And it's the concert where she's the goatee and like, ugh, it's amazing. Why didn't they sell the soundtrack? I don't know. Bizarre.

• 1:03:53Speaker 06

Truth or Dare, the one where Kevin Costner shows up backstage?

• 1:03:56Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, and she's like...

• 1:03:58Yasi Salek?

He has that horrible haircut. What did he say? He was interesting? No, he called it like, neat. And she was like, go fuck yourself. I mean, she didn't say that, but...

• 1:04:05Speaker 06

That's why he made Horizon Part One an American saga.

• 1:04:09Yasi Salek?

All this modernity, it's disgusting to me, Madonna. Do something else, do my eyebrows, best part.

• 1:04:14Speaker 06

I don't know if I've ever seen Times Square. I was just thinking of it.

• 1:04:17Yasi Salek?

But you've seen... Oh, you haven't seen Times Square? It's, it's not a good movie. It's fun, it's just like, it's about these two girls who meet in like, a place where they're being assessed for their mental health, but one's like, a street girl, like, a street punk girl, and the other is like, the daughter of a rich politician. And they run away together and they connect with this, like, New York radio DJ played by Tim Curry, who like, helps them start a band. And, because he wants to get back at the dad, who's this like, horrible politician, who's like, kind of like, trying to shut down the coolness of Times Square. It's, it's a fun movie.

• 1:04:50Speaker 06

  It's a lot going on.

• 1:04:51Yasi Salek?

We need a bubble gum shrimp company in here, that's all we need.

• 1:04:56Speaker 06

All right, great picks, Yasi. Rob, you're up. Or is it go back to Sean? I'm up. Oh, you're up.

• 1:05:02Yasi Salek?

It's confusing. Do you guys follow how this goes?

• 1:05:06Speaker 05

You're in 21st century now. I have a 21st century pick. I've obviously already taken a Tarantino film. So I'm not gonna do that. I don't want to take a Wes Anderson movie. You've taken a Wes Anderson movie. I do. I'll take a movie soundtrack in honor of my co-host Amanda Dobbins. One of her favorite movies of all time.

• 1:05:27Yasi Salek?

  Amanda Dobbins.

• 1:05:27Speaker 05

  Marie Antoinette.

• 1:05:28Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, it's a good one.

• 1:05:41Speaker 05

Sofia Coppola's, maybe her best film, arguably, debatably. I think her best soundtrack. Some people might say Lost in Translation. I think this soundtrack is the most interesting, the most exciting. It's the best, one of the best ideas in the movie. Susie and the Banshees, Bow Wow Wow, Gang of Four, The Strokes. So I'm, so my guy Alan Siegel wearing a vintage Strokes t-shirt tonight. Shout out Alan.

• 1:06:08Speaker 05

So that's my 21st century pick, Marie Antoinette.

• 1:06:10Yasi Salek?

Very good one. Good job, Sean.

• 1:06:14Yasi Salek?

Finally, some female director representation, am I right?

• 1:06:25Speaker 00

All right, so it's me, it's 90s. I'm going Lost Highway.

• 1:06:31Yasi Salek?

  In honor of...

• 1:06:33Speaker 05

  Dag.

• 1:06:46Speaker 00

I almost watched this on the plane over here. I am very glad I didn't do that. The first thing I'll say is that I was not, I rewatched it, I was not aware Bill Pullman plays a free jazz saxophonist, which is honestly a striking and unpleasant visual image as in any David Lynch film I've ever watched. That was a lot to deal with. So it starts with The Perfect Drug, right? Like I was trying, I was trying to think about being a teenager. You know, having, you know, you get the crow soundtrack, right? Because it's got the Stone Temple Pilots and you're introduced to Nine Inch Nails covering Joy Division, to all this other industrial music. Like, this idea of 90's movie soundtrack specifically is rabbit holes, you know? Pulp Fiction could work that way.

• 1:07:28Speaker 00

And so, the idea of buying Lost Highway for the perfect drug, it's got a Smashing Pumpkins song on it, and then you're inundated with all this other shit that you can barely understand. But it's like, what I love about Tarantino soundtracks is it's like, it expands time, right? Like, gangsters in the 90's are dancing to Chuck Berry, you know, they roll up to the plantation in Django Unchained to Rick Ross, you know? Like, this is the way that it expands time. And I feel like a David Lynch soundtrack expands like space. You don't understand where you are, there's all this music that you've never heard before, like, just Angelo Badalamenti, I hope I'm pronouncing that correctly, but just, obviously, I think a Twin Peaks first with him, but just the rabbit hole, the wormhole that it drops you into.

• 1:08:13Speaker 00

Lou Reed singing "This Magic Moments," like, Patricia Arquette gets like, sort of a, like, kind of the David Lynch version of Gwyneth Paltrow these days, Royal Tenenbaums in that movie. I'm so glad I didn't watch that on the plane, man. I almost did it. They would've thrown me off the plane, they would've given me a parachute, and that would've been it. And this is sort of the birth of Trent Reznor as, you know, the Oscar god that we know and love today, right? Like, David Bowie, like, David Bowie's "I'm Deranged," like, is in his industrial era. Like, I just, I was trying to think of the soundtrack, that if you were just a 90's alt-rock kid like I was, and you liked one song, and you bought an album for one song, what is

• 1:08:54Speaker 00

the most fascinating and surreal, and sort of baffling and life-changing universe that, like, one CD could give you? And it feels like Lost Highway was it for me.

• 1:09:04Yasi Salek?

Wait, do you want to hear something crazy about "I"?

• 1:09:09Yasi Salek?

  That's a smashing pumpkin song.

• 1:09:09Speaker 00

  That's a smashing pumpkin song.

• 1:09:10Yasi Salek?

Okay, just recently, William Corgan put up a very confusing series of Instagram videos. Did you guys see this? Sure. Where he explains that that song was... So, he wrote a song for Lost Highway, which was rejected by David Lynch personally. He was like, "No, thank you. Go do something else." And he had written this song, like, years prior, like, for a rapper. As like a throwaway, just like, and it was Shaquille O'Neal was the rapper. It didn't end up getting used, so he went back to that song, and that's what became "I."

• 1:09:44Speaker 00

  Shaquille O'Neal.

• 1:09:46Yasi Salek?

  Correct.

• 1:09:47Speaker 00

Oh my god. That is as disturbing an image as any David Lynch.

• 1:09:50Yasi Salek?

A phenomenal piece of information. That was his, like, throwaway, "I'll give it to Shaquille O'Neal's rap album" song, and then it became "I."

• 1:10:07Yasi Salek?

One of the better smashing pumpkin songs, TBQH.

• 1:10:11Speaker 00

  I had no idea.

• 1:10:12Yasi Salek?

There you go, that's what I'm here for.

• 1:10:13Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:10:14Yasi Salek?

That's what they pay me the medium-sized bucks for.

• 1:10:16Speaker 05

  A couple Lost Highway notes?

• 1:10:18Speaker 00

  Please.

• 1:10:19Speaker 05

One features Chris's favorite Rammstein song, "Rammstein."

• 1:10:22Speaker 00

Oh god, I didn't mention Rammstein! Not five at least, yeah. There's a Rammstein song where he says something really mean and cool and tough in German. "Last!" Not that one, but it sounds to me like, "I'm not Amish," and I hear it that way every time. Including when I was watching the film last time, they're like, "They're killing Marilyn Manson," while Rammstein is going, "I'm not Amish," and it's like, "This is the best movie ever made."

• 1:10:48Speaker 05

This is what, how Trent described his conversation with David Lynch about what he was looking for. He said he'd describe a scene and say, "Here's what I want. Now, there's a police car chasing Fred down the highway, and I want you to picture this. There's a box, okay? And in this box, there's snakes coming out. Snakes whizzing past your face. So what I want is the sound of that."

• 1:11:13Speaker 00

  Actually, like, great direction.

• 1:11:14Speaker 05

  That's sick.

• 1:11:15Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 1:11:16Speaker 05

  That's awesome.

• 1:11:17Speaker 00

That's a good David Lynch, also, if that's indeed what that was, yes.

• 1:11:21Speaker 05

  I wasn't even trying.

• 1:11:24Yasi Salek?

Great pick, Rob's. Can't believe none of us picked The Crow. It really just shows the 90s had so many good soundtracks that there's like five other ones that could have been just as phenomenal as the ones we picked.

• 1:11:34Speaker 05

  Yeah, well, I guess.

• 1:11:36Yasi Salek?

Ocean's Night was definitely on the list.

• 1:11:37Speaker 06

We really out-thought ourselves a little bit on that.

• 1:11:39Yasi Salek?

  I think we overthought.

• 1:11:40Speaker 05

  Big empty, man. Shit.

• 1:11:41Yasi Salek?

  I know.

• 1:11:42Speaker 05

  STP, fuck.

• 1:11:43Yasi Salek?

The Helmet. That fucking helmet. I love Helmet.

• 1:11:47Speaker 06

That's it for Rob. I have to pick my 70s movie.

• 1:11:50Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:11:53Speaker 06

  Really stuck between stations here.

• 1:11:54Speaker 05

  Reese's 2?

• 1:11:55Speaker 06

  On one hand, uh...

• 1:11:59Yasi Salek?

That was in the 80s, first of all. Not to split hairs.

• 1:12:02Speaker 06

So stunningly, nobody picked Goodfellas for 90s. So I'm gonna pick Mean Streets for 70s. Starts with "Be My Baby," is like the introduction to Scorsese's use of pop music and movies.

• 1:12:25Speaker 06

Does it so well with the camera movement. I know you don't care because you just want this to be a mixtape, but it's amazing.

• 1:12:30Yasi Salek?

I don't know if you've noticed, but I'm newly a member of the film-loving and watching community. I have had two celebrated appearances on the Big Picture Podcast.

• 1:12:39Speaker 06

Are you a Letterboxd pro member? And yeah, just an incredible collection. A lot of Motown, a lot of classic rock. I was on the fence between this and Animal House because Animal House has three goaded songs. Shout Louie Louie, Star Spangled Banner.

• 1:12:59Speaker 06

But I'm gonna go with Mean Streets.

• 1:13:01Yasi Salek?

  You're just a patriot.

• 1:13:02Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:13:03Speaker 05

Would you mind humming the Star Spangled Banner for us now?

• 1:13:06Speaker 06

Louie Louie. Um, okay, so that's it.

• 1:13:09Yasi Salek?

That's it for Rob, you guys.

• 1:13:13Yasi Salek?

Guys, quickly, before we vote, or whatever we're doing now, I have no idea.

• 1:13:17Speaker 05

  We're voting, yeah.

• 1:13:18Yasi Salek?

  I don't know.

• 1:13:19Speaker 05

  Sure.

• 1:13:19Yasi Salek?

We just wanted to mention that we said it on social media in the promotion of the show, but there are some little placards around that have information about music cares here who are doing some really incredible things to support specifically musicians and people in the music industry who were affected by the wildfires. And if you have it in your means to do a small donation, I think you can just scan a QR code. They're kind of littered around the place, so take a look out for those.

• 1:13:46Speaker 06

Do you guys want to recap your choices?

• 1:13:49Speaker 05

Should we do some honorable mentions?

• 1:13:50Yasi Salek?

I was gonna say, can we do some honorable mentions? Yeah.

• 1:13:53Speaker 05

  There's some long lists here.

• 1:13:54Yasi Salek?

I have a lot of honorable mentions.

• 1:13:57Speaker 06

  High Fidelity, of course.

• 1:13:58Yasi Salek?

I went back to High Fidelity and low key, it's not that good. I'm so sorry. So sorry.

• 1:14:06Speaker 06

You know what is good? Gross Point Blank.

• 1:14:07Yasi Salek?

Yes, Gross Point Blank was one of my faves. That was on.

• 1:14:11Speaker 06

We somehow got out of this without Dave's Confused?

• 1:14:14Yasi Salek?

  Dave's Confused.

• 1:14:17Yasi Salek?

  Fear and Loathing.

• 1:14:21Yasi Salek?

Harold and Maude, that's a really good one.

• 1:14:24Speaker 06

  The Crow. The Crow.

• 1:14:28Yasi Salek?

Oh, Poetic Justice, Crossroads, Britney Spears, honey.

• 1:14:33Speaker 06

The Oliver Asseas movie Carlos has an incredible score.

• 1:14:37Speaker 05

  Settle down.

• 1:14:39Speaker 06

But you know what also has a pretty good score or soundtrack? A complete unknown.

• 1:14:44Yasi Salek?

You know what, for me, it was so, so important.

• 1:14:47Speaker 05

Drop down in on this podcast. Sing you a little song, it's called Wimway.

• 1:14:52Yasi Salek?

  Have you seen Stealing Beauty?

• 1:14:54Speaker 05

  Certainly.

• 1:14:54Speaker 06

  Bertolucci?

• 1:14:55Yasi Salek?

That was one of the most important soundtracks of my young life. It showed me who the Cocteau Twins were. It had that amazing Mazzy Star song on it, it had Portishead on it.

• 1:15:04Speaker 05

It was important for me for the same reason, but it was because Rachel Weisz took her top off, I think.

• 1:15:09Yasi Salek?

And Liv Tyler was really beautiful.

• 1:15:11Speaker 06

I would also throw Juice in the 90s. Ghostbusters. Ghostbusters.

• 1:15:19Speaker 06

  The Big Chill.

• 1:15:20Yasi Salek?

  What did we?

• 1:15:21Speaker 05

  Quadrophenia?

• 1:15:23Yasi Salek?

Oh, yeah, Quadro- you know what? Okay. The other Who movie, which is not a movie movie.

• 1:15:29Speaker 06

  Tommy?

• 1:15:30Yasi Salek?

No, there was the, Kids Are Alright?

• 1:15:32Speaker 05

  Oh, Kids Are Alright.

• 1:15:32Yasi Salek?

Has better music. Quadrophenia has kind of a little, I know, I'm just saying, in the scope of soundtrack.

• 1:15:37Speaker 05

  What about Saturday Night Fever?

• 1:15:38Yasi Salek?

Saturday Fever, if you like disco.

• 1:15:40Speaker 06

Did you guys have any other concert films? Beyonce, Homecoming.

• 1:15:43Yasi Salek?

  I did. Oh, that's good.

• 1:15:45Speaker 06

  Rudolph Swift, The Eras Tour.

• 1:15:49Yasi Salek?

He's such an ally, such a male ally. I had Rude Boy, which I didn't know where it fit because, have you guys seen Rude Boy? The Clash? It's like half concert film, half... Fiction film, but it is them playing in concert a lot of it. But then also they had to go back and rerecord the music. So it's not live because the sound was fucked up. So I was like, hmm, maybe it doesn't fit into any of these categories. But that's a pretty good.

• 1:16:14Speaker 06

  It means the same.

• 1:16:14Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:16:15Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:15Speaker 06

  Led Zeppelin.

• 1:16:17Speaker 05

  Monterey Pop?

• 1:16:18Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:16:18Speaker 05

  Sign of the Times?

• 1:16:19Speaker 06

  Woodstock.

• 1:16:21Speaker 05

  Prince?

• 1:16:22Speaker 00

  Block Party.

• 1:16:23Speaker 06

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:16:23Speaker 00

  Dave Chappelle's Block Party.

• 1:16:24Yasi Salek?

No one said Almost Famous? Waiting to Exhale? I'm just looking at the varsity blues, the film, yeah.

• 1:16:32Speaker 05

  Brown Sugar? Black Panther?

• 1:16:34Speaker 00

  Black Panther.

• 1:16:35Speaker 05

  Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?

• 1:16:37Yasi Salek?

Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist. It's a good one.

• 1:16:42Speaker 06

  Inside Luan Davis?

• 1:16:43Speaker 05

  Clueless?

• 1:16:44Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:16:44Yasi Salek?

Clueless was the, Clueless was my second pick for 90s. I couldn't decide between Romeo and Juliet and Clueless.

• 1:16:50Speaker 05

  Above the Rim?

• 1:16:51Speaker 06

Yeah. White Men Can't Jump? Let's recap our picks. Let's recap. So Sean, you go first.

• 1:16:59Speaker 05

I'm not done. In 90s, I selected Pulp Fiction. In 70s, I selected Superfly. In concert film, I took Stop Making Sense. In 1980s, I took Say Anything. And for the 21st century, I took Marie Antoinette.

• 1:17:16Yasi Salek?

Very good, Sean. Okay, for the 70s, I, much derided, made fun of, took Grease, a fantastic soundtrack. The 90s, I took Romeo and Juliet. 2000s, Garden State. Concert film, Madonna, Truth or Dare. And 80s, Times Square.

• 1:17:35Speaker 00

All right, I got 80s, Purple Rain.

• 1:17:39Yasi Salek?

  I think Rob won.

• 1:17:40Speaker 05

Thank you. Is Prince's family here?

• 1:17:44Yasi Salek?

  Every.

• 1:17:46Speaker 00

Concert movie, I got Aretha Franklin, Amazing Grace. 2000s, Josie and the Pussycats. 70s, The Muppet Movie. I think especially. And 90s, Lost Highway.

• 1:17:59Yasi Salek?

  Very good, Rob.

• 1:18:00Speaker 06

In 90s, I took Trainspotting. In concert film, I took The Last Waltz. For 2000s and beyond, I took Royal Tenenbaums. 80s, I took Repo Man. 70s, I took Mean Streets. I guess we can go through the gesture of deciding who won.

• 1:18:18Yasi Salek?

I think Rob won, honestly. He's, he's really the populist vote.

• 1:18:39Speaker 06

  Congratulations, Yasi.

• 1:18:41Yasi Salek?

It doesn't even count, but I'll take it. You know what, you guys? I respect you. Thank you. I know that you just gave this one to me because even looking at it, I know it's not as good as theirs, but I'll take it.

• 1:19:41Speaker 06

I think we're gonna take some questions from the crowd, is that right?

• 1:19:44Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:45Speaker 06

We have some folks walking around with microphones, so if you just raise your hand, they will try and spot you. Oh, we got a wired mic, so you actually have to come up and face the music here, so to speak. No questions from the Prince Estate, please.

• 1:19:59Yasi Salek?

They're just gonna shout soundtracks we forgot at us.

• 1:20:06Speaker 06

  Does anybody have any questions?

• 1:20:09Yasi Salek?

Oh, it's a lot harder when you have to walk up to the mic, isn't it?

• 1:20:12Speaker 06

It's tough. You can't hide behind your anonymous accounts.

• 1:20:17Yasi Salek?

  It's not mandatory.

• 1:20:18Speaker 06

Here we go. Somebody's coming up. Brave Soul.

• 1:20:24Speaker 10

I'm just curious what your thoughts are on, on soundtracks that really where the, where the musicians are sort of specifically working with the film. And because one of my favorites, which is a very weird movie is Spawn.

• 1:20:33Speaker 00

  Oh, yes, of course.

• 1:20:35Speaker 10

The soundtrack is like a bunch of, they forced a bunch of bands to work together.

• 1:20:37Yasi Salek?

Judgment Night Part Two, as they call it around here.

• 1:20:40Speaker 10

And the Dust Brothers. And so I'm just curious if there are others that I'm not thinking of that are like in that category where it's not just they took songs where it's like they're really working to do something weird or unique with the movie and the filmmakers.

• 1:20:50Yasi Salek?

Judgment Night is the only other one I can think of where it's like, they did something specifically like Spawn.

• 1:20:56Speaker 05

Yeah. The only other example of that I can think of, period, is when Loud Records did the like rap-rock combo album. Do you remember that? Where they had their like rap groups play with rock bands, but movies?

• 1:21:08Yasi Salek?

I mean, I guess a little, not the whole soundtrack, but Romeo and Juliet. Like I pointed out, they did have them write specific songs that like referenced the story of Romeo and Juliet to go on the soundtrack. But yeah, I guess past that, we used to be a proper country and we're not anymore. They don't do that stuff anymore.

• 1:21:23Speaker 00

The Spawn soundtrack is the end of an era, I guess, is what we have to.

• 1:21:28Yasi Salek?

What would you say was like the first real like soundtrack-y soundtrack where they were like, we're putting all these cool songs on one? Easy Rider. Easy Rider, yes. I wanted to drop Easy Rider, but it was 69.

• 1:21:40Speaker 05

Yeah. I think of American Graffiti as kind of a watershed for older music rather than contemporary music. But yeah. I mean, it wasn't, The Ringer produced an entire documentary called Mr. Saturday Night about the Svengali who managed the Bee Gees and used his relationship with the Bee Gees to kind of forge all of these inroads in Hollywood. And one of the things that he did was produce, helped produce Saturday Night Fever and created the mega soundtrack, the mega selling soundtrack by working with his artists and getting them paid like five times over and him 100 times over.

• 1:22:15Speaker 07

  By creating the synchronicity.

• 1:22:16Yasi Salek?

I think it might have been the same with Times Square. And you know Barry Gibb wrote Grease, the Tetealer track, Grease is the word. I'm not familiar with the Grease.

• 1:22:26Speaker 00

Huge soundtracks anymore, like the Barbie soundtrack or like Black Panther. Like they're few and far between. I saw The TV Glow, I think is the movie I've seen most recently. Like the claw machine scene in that movie is the most struck I've been by a song in a movie, you know, that hadn't existed before as far as I knew. But it just, the event soundtrack just does not happen. I don't know if that's like a streaming thing, like compilations, like grab bag compilations just aren't.

• 1:22:55Yasi Salek?

We would buy those. Like I would listen to it over and over and over again. That was like, it was like an album. I would put it on. People don't do that anymore. Oh, hi, we have another question.

• 1:23:03Speaker 06

  We got another question.

• 1:23:04Speaker 11

So it wasn't the exercise tonight, but maybe some underappreciated scores? I'll throw mine out. Tangerine Dream, Three O'Clock High.

• 1:23:12Speaker 06

  Absolutely.

• 1:23:13Speaker 11

And Thief. Just stuff like that. What do you guys think?

• 1:23:16Speaker 06

I listened to Michael Dyna's Moneyball score all the time. It's really good working music. It's mostly piano and it's like the same theme over and over again, but it is gorgeous. So that's an underrated one, the Moneyball soundtrack score.

• 1:23:29Yasi Salek?

I wonder if Skin has like a really good score? I listen to that a lot.

• 1:23:34Speaker 07

  By Mika Levy.

• 1:23:35Yasi Salek?

Mika Levy, yeah, I like that one a lot.

• 1:23:37Speaker 00

John Malkovich was a big one for me. And it's always, I hated the movie honestly, but Dancer in the Dark, Bjork's. I loved that one. If Beale Street Could Talk, I think like when that came out, that was like everyone's writing music, I feel like for a year. Yeah. I have not seen Challengers yet, but everybody talks about how amazing.

• 1:23:59Speaker 07

  What are you doing?

• 1:24:00Speaker 00

I don't know. Raising children poorly, mostly.

• 1:24:03Speaker 07

  They'd love it.

• 1:24:08Yasi Salek?

  Yeah, take, take the family.

• 1:24:09Speaker 00

  That's right.

• 1:24:10Yasi Salek?

  Underrated scores?

• 1:24:12Speaker 05

I think, um, you know, Ennio Morricone died a couple of years ago and there's obviously five or six legendary scores that he worked on. But if you just listen to any Italian crime movie that he worked on between 1958 and 1967, it's the coolest fucking thing you've ever heard, like Danger Diabolic or whatever, and you'll just be mesmerized by how forward-thinking and exciting all that music was. I don't know, there's, it's almost hard to answer, there's so many.

• 1:24:38Speaker 00

Wish, was that Herbie Hancock primarily? I think, maybe I'm making that up.

• 1:24:43Speaker 05

You know what's one that I, I think of all the time that I love is, um, Daniel Hart's score for The Old Man and the Gun, which is a David Lowery movie, very jazzy score.

• 1:24:52Yasi Salek?

  Phantom Thread.

• 1:24:54Speaker 05

Phantom Thread is a great one.

• 1:24:55Yasi Salek?

  That's a great score.

• 1:24:55Speaker 05

I would say not underrated, I would say properly rated.

• 1:24:58Yasi Salek?

I don't know, I'm sorry, what are we doing underrated? To me, all scores are underrated.

• 1:25:01Speaker 05

  The man was wondering about.

• 1:25:02Yasi Salek?

  Sorry, my apologies.

• 1:25:05Yasi Salek?

  I'll, I'll go now.

• 1:25:09Yasi Salek?

  Hi.

• 1:25:10Speaker 07

Hey, uh, popular soundtracks that you really don't like?

• 1:25:16Speaker 06

Well, I have, um, like, like, Scar Tissue from working in record stores in the 90s and having to hear the Forrest Gump soundtrack. Like, on repeat. It was just always on. What's that?

• 1:25:30Yasi Salek?

He's so good. It is good.

• 1:25:32Speaker 06

It's good? I mean, yeah. It's easy, though.

• 1:25:36Yasi Salek?

You were like a certain age and then you were, that was how you got introduced to all this kind of classic rock.

• 1:25:42Speaker 06

  I wasn't of that age.

• 1:25:43Yasi Salek?

I hear you, though, I hear you. Soundtracks that I hate.

• 1:25:46Speaker 00

I don't think of anything that I hate.

• 1:25:48Yasi Salek?

Like, I'm trying to think of a film that I watched that I was like, ugh, this song? This sucks.

• 1:25:55Speaker 00

  Oh no.

• 1:25:56Speaker 05

You want me to shit on stuff?

• 1:25:58Speaker 06

  Yes, maybe, yeah, for Gump?

• 1:26:02Speaker 00

  Whoa.

• 1:26:03Speaker 05

  Wow.

• 1:26:04Speaker 00

  Whoa.

• 1:26:05Speaker 05

  Yo, no. Absolutely not.

• 1:26:10Speaker 05

I did and do love classic Disney soundtracks, and I'm experiencing them all over again right now, and it's freaking great, so shut the hell up.

• 1:26:20Speaker 00

Moana 2 has no bangers, man. My, my daughter, my four-year-old daughter likes Get Lost. She likes the disco song.

• 1:26:29Speaker 05

  He Who and Beyond, fire.

• 1:26:32Speaker 05

They're both fire. I've come around completely.

• 1:26:34Speaker 00

The first one is fire, the second one is not fire. Like, or is not fire to the same degree. There's no, there's no shiny on Moana 2, in my view. That's fair. I agree.

• 1:26:45Yasi Salek?

The Ryan Gosling movie where he drives the car around, yeah.

• 1:26:51Speaker 05

  Three men simultaneously say "drive."

• 1:26:54Speaker 06

Hold on, are you coming out against the "drive" soundtrack?

• 1:26:57Yasi Salek?

It's just not my thing. It's not, I didn't do it for me.

• 1:26:59Speaker 06

What do you mean, it's not your thing?

• 1:27:00Yasi Salek?

I don't like that kind of music. Kaminsky, Kadinsky, what are they? It's just not my thing.

• 1:27:05Speaker 05

  You think that's bad?

• 1:27:06Yasi Salek?

It's just not my thing. I didn't like, everyone was like, "Oh my god." And I was like, "Okay, I guess."

• 1:27:10Speaker 05

You're gonna get in a knife fight with Chris.

• 1:27:12Speaker 06

Do you feel like he misled Carey Mulligan?

• 1:27:13Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:14Speaker 06

Do you feel like he misled Carey Mulligan about like his true occupation?

• 1:27:17Yasi Salek?

No, I don't have, I honestly, the movie was kind of boring, but I...

• 1:27:21Speaker 05

Do you remember Oscar Isaac's character's name in that movie?

• 1:27:25Speaker 06

  Something outrageous.

• 1:27:26Speaker 05

  It's standard.

• 1:27:27Speaker 06

Yeah. And he wants to open a restaurant, right? Isn't that why he's doing the, like, the crimes?

• 1:27:33Yasi Salek?

It's not like your favorite movie?

• 1:27:35Speaker 06

  No, but it's up there.

• 1:27:36Yasi Salek?

  Okay. Sorry, Chris. Wow.

• 1:27:39Speaker 05

You should ask him about Heat.

• 1:27:44Yasi Salek?

  I like Heat.

• 1:27:46Speaker 06

  Who's, who's got a question?

• 1:27:49Speaker 12

So I'm recently rewatching The Leftovers and I rewatched International Assassin, and so I'm wondering what's the best song that's been karaoke'd in film or TV?

• 1:28:06Yasi Salek?

  That's good.

• 1:28:09Speaker 06

  I'm thinking of karaoke moments.

• 1:28:11Speaker 00

What did they sing in Lost in Translation?

• 1:28:13Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:14Speaker 05

More Than This? More Than This, yeah.

• 1:28:18Yasi Salek?

  I don't know if you...

• 1:28:19Speaker 05

She does Brass in Pocket, yeah.

• 1:28:20Yasi Salek?

I don't know if you guys know, but I recently became a film producer, and that was because in the movie Skincare, the character sings a Cure song, "Just Like Heaven", which I helped clear. And I'm using this time to remind you that I'm a film producer. But also, that's one of the only times I can remember someone doing karaoke in a movie.

• 1:28:42Speaker 06

Was there a Gwyneth Paltrow movie about karaoke?

• 1:28:46Yasi Salek?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:48Speaker 11

  Directed by her father.

• 1:28:51Yasi Salek?

We didn't talk about, what's the Drew Barrymore singing movie, like Heart and Soul? Music and lyrics. That's a great, yes, Adam Sandler's, that was a great soundtrack. Many good original songs.

• 1:29:03Speaker 00

That Thing You Do never came up, I guess that's a little weird.

• 1:29:07Yasi Salek?

Okay, but luckily it was just the one song.

• 1:29:09Speaker 06

One song, you know? What name, can you think of another song in That Thing You Do?

• 1:29:13Speaker 00

No, that's why it didn't come up.

• 1:29:15Speaker 11

Eon Eaters. It's a tough one.

• 1:29:16Yasi Salek?

It's a good song, though. What did you say on today's episode of 60 Songs, Hinder? Did you mean that?

• 1:29:22Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 1:29:24Yasi Salek?

Was it a joke, or were you being serious?

• 1:29:25Speaker 00

No, I was subconscious, it's Hinder. The band, H-I-N-D-E-R is the band. I have like seven people on Twitter telling me this. I pronounced it the way that it sounds like more butts, like Hinder is like, that's the why I pronounce it.

• 1:29:39Yasi Salek?

That was just like, you were doing like a galaxy brain thing, I didn't get it.

• 1:29:42Speaker 00

That's exactly what I was doing, yes, it was very well thought out.

• 1:29:46Speaker 11

Are you saying you did think it was pronounced like that?

• 1:29:48Speaker 00

I mispronounced the name of the band, H-I-N-D-R.

• 1:29:51Speaker 11

But you did it on purpose?

• 1:29:52Speaker 00

  Yes.

• 1:29:53Speaker 06

  People on Twitter corrected you?

• 1:29:54Speaker 00

As far as you know, yes.

• 1:29:58Yasi Salek?

Should we let this nice man ask his question?

• 1:30:01Speaker 06

  Another question.

• 1:30:03Speaker 11

Any favorite or like standout music video crossovers like Coolio's Gangsta Paradise or like Prince's Bat Dance?

• 1:30:13Yasi Salek?

I like the Teenage Fan Club and De La Soul music video because they're in it together and it's very cute seeing Teenage Fan Club and De La Soul like interacting. They're also in a classroom, I believe. What did they talk about? I must know, yeah.

• 1:30:30Speaker 05

I mean, this appears in the Yacht Rock documentary, but obviously Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines in the Michael McDonald song at the end of that film is a good one. That was a member, that happened all the time. It was like, why is this movie star standing next to Axl Rose in this video? But there was like, oh, it's a tie-in. So this is what we do. We really, we have lost something.

• 1:30:55Yasi Salek?

Me and my brain cells. I don't, yeah. Hi. Hi.

• 1:30:59Speaker 13

So can you think of a movie where the soundtrack is so bad that it makes you dislike the movie?

• 1:31:04Speaker 06

He's wearing a Mets sweatshirt and a Mets hat. You can acknowledge that?

• 1:31:09Yasi Salek?

  Moana.

• 1:31:10Speaker 13

  Let's go Mets.

• 1:31:11Yasi Salek?

Back to Moana, just kidding. The movie was also bad.

• 1:31:13Speaker 00

Yeah, it's a soundtrack so bad that it reflects poorly on the movie.

• 1:31:19Yasi Salek?

You actually would have to think like, the music was used in the movie so poorly that it made you dislike the movie.

• 1:31:31Speaker 05

I'm thinking of the American Pie soundtrack for some reason. What's on that?

• 1:31:35Speaker 06

  Punk, right?

• 1:31:37Yasi Salek?

Is that, "You wanted more, more than I could handle." The tonic song?

• 1:31:43Speaker 00

You're doing Michael McDonald right now? That's really good.

• 1:31:47Yasi Salek?

That's my 90s man singing voice, and it's just sort of pan.

• 1:31:50Speaker 00

Can you do a little more of that, please? It's really good.

• 1:31:52Speaker 05

Apparently, Etta James's "At Last" was on the American Pie soundtrack?

• 1:31:57Yasi Salek?

  They had a budget.

• 1:31:58Speaker 05

And also, "It's Been One Week."

• 1:32:02Speaker 06

You shouldn't be allowed to have those two songs on the same soundtrack.

• 1:32:05Yasi Salek?

Chicken to Chinese, a Chinese chicken. That's it.

• 1:32:08Speaker 05

  Favorite lyric.

• 1:32:09Yasi Salek?

  It's a really good song.

• 1:32:11Speaker 06

  We have another question.

• 1:32:13Speaker 14

Yeah, so are there any like, soundtracks that make you try to act like a movie's good? Like, I love the Batman Forever soundtrack and the movie's terrible?

• 1:32:20Speaker 00

Oh, that was a good one. "Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me." Yeah, yeah, that's a good one.

• 1:32:26Speaker 14

  Kiss from a rose, man.

• 1:32:27Speaker 00

  Yeah, that's...

• 1:32:29Yasi Salek?

I mean, is Judgment Night a good movie? Let's be really honest, not a good movie. Great soundtrack.

• 1:32:39Speaker 05

I'll say, when I saw the trailer for Rushmore with the creation song, I was like, this is probably gonna be the greatest movie ever fucking made. And it is like the eighth greatest movie ever made, but just that one song, like it had, like that is, obviously the point of this whole conversation is the way that music transforms your emotional relationship when you're watching a movie. And all of the people who were the best at picking songs for these movies were able to transfer something to you about their taste that is so powerful. So like, I don't, I have a hard time like appreciating bad movies, honestly. But, um, but there's something about taking a very good movie

• 1:33:21Speaker 05

to an elevated state because of the songs that are added to it that is probably worth acknowledging.

• 1:33:27Yasi Salek?

Like when they tried How to Save a Life and Grey's Anatomy. Really elevated the form.

• 1:33:31Speaker 06

  Perfection, right there.

• 1:33:33Speaker 05

  Absolutely.

• 1:33:34Speaker 00

Or Spawn. I thought of Spawn immediately.

• 1:33:36Yasi Salek?

  A fabulous film. Next question.

• 1:33:48Speaker 05

  Ugh.

• 1:33:49Yasi Salek?

Get a Chinese, a Chinese chicken.

• 1:33:57Speaker 00

It's looking at me and I don't like it at all.

• 1:33:59Yasi Salek?

You have a podcast that's like about songs.

• 1:34:02Speaker 00

  That is true.

• 1:34:06Yasi Salek?

Would it, for you, would it be They Might Be Giants?

• 1:34:13Speaker 00

That's correct. It would be, it would be Particle Man by They Might Be Giants. Is he a dot or is he a speck? When he's underwater, does he get wet? Or does the water get him instead? Nobody knows. Particle Man.

• 1:34:27Speaker 00

Directed by David Lynch. From the grave.

• 1:34:32Yasi Salek?

  Scored by.

• 1:34:33Speaker 05

What is your answer to this question?

• 1:34:35Yasi Salek?

I don't know. This is such a hard one.

• 1:34:38Speaker 05

  Worked by Nine Inch Nails.

• 1:34:40Yasi Salek?

The Johnny Cash version? Like, what is the movie about? Is it burning down the house? If it's now.

• 1:34:49Speaker 05

  Inspirational story.

• 1:34:50Yasi Salek?

If the movie comes out now. Yeah, Out of the Ashes, the Yossi Salek story.

• 1:34:55Speaker 05

  Yeah, Phoenix.

• 1:34:56Yasi Salek?

  Like a phoenix.

• 1:34:57Speaker 05

  Starring Yossi Salek.

• 1:34:58Speaker 07

Never made it as a wise man.

• 1:35:01Yasi Salek?

  That'd be a great drop.

• 1:35:04Speaker 06

Because you often talk about this song, Spoon Man by Soundgarden.

• 1:35:08Yasi Salek?

  That would be your.

• 1:35:09Speaker 05

Because of how into spoons I am. I just like, I just think spoons are really cool. I never forget seeing Chris Cornell talking about introducing Spoon Man 120 Minutes. He was so earnest. And God rest his soul, he's a genius. But he was just like, I just saw this guy in the street, he's just playing the spoons. I was like, it's a great idea for a song, Spoon Man. Boom. I was like, what the fuck? Is that how you write songs? I was 12. I couldn't believe he did that.

• 1:35:33Yasi Salek?

I think that literally is how you write songs.

• 1:35:34Speaker 05

  This totally is.

• 1:35:36Yasi Salek?

  What about you, Chris?

• 1:35:38Speaker 06

What's the audio sleeve song from Collateral?

• 1:35:41Speaker 05

It's called Meathead Idiot, I think is the name of the song.

• 1:35:45Speaker 07

  Meathead Idiot.

• 1:35:47Yasi Salek?

Chris, is this that Rammstein song?

• 1:35:52Speaker 06

  I don't know.

• 1:35:53Yasi Salek?

  Such a hard question.

• 1:35:55Speaker 06

It would be cool if it was like some Zeppelin or Stone song, because then I know that the movie would be like, pretty big, you know, because they would have to spend a lot of money on the soundtrack. And that's pretty fucking cool. Imagine like Scorsese, like, we gotta get the CR story right. So let's get it.

• 1:36:12Speaker 05

  So Jumpin' Jack Flash.

• 1:36:16Yasi Salek?

I think I would have to do a whole song, probably.

• 1:36:18Speaker 05

  A whole song? Which one?

• 1:36:19Yasi Salek?

I don't know. Maybe Miss World.

• 1:36:21Speaker 05

  Miss World. That's, that's good.

• 1:36:25Yasi Salek?

  That's right. That's the one.

• 1:36:26Speaker 05

And that would be a good name for the movie.

• 1:36:27Yasi Salek?

Yeah, right? My other one would be, this is random, American Girl. Your Best American Girl. Is it called Your Best American Girl by Mitski?

• 1:36:34Speaker 07

  Yeah, that's good.

• 1:36:36Yasi Salek?

The best and maybe only song about the immigrant daughter experience. So.

• 1:36:41Speaker 06

We got time for one more question.

• 1:36:44Speaker 15

Thank you. Very quick shout out to Yasi for clarifying some Irish border things as an Irishman. I appreciate it.

• 1:36:51Yasi Salek?

Oh god, a real Irishman is here, you guys.

• 1:36:54Speaker 15

The Fontaines DC clarification on the latest.

• 1:36:59Yasi Salek?

Well, I was shamed by the Reddit community who told me I was racist.

• 1:37:02Speaker 15

  I really appreciate it.

• 1:37:03Yasi Salek?

I educated myself about the difference between Northern Ireland and regular Ireland.

• 1:37:09Speaker 15

  Very much appreciated.

• 1:37:10Speaker 00

That's how they refer to it.

• 1:37:12Speaker 07

  You say "regular Ireland"?

• 1:37:16Yasi Salek?

  And other Ireland.

• 1:37:17Speaker 07

I think if you say "regular Ireland".

• 1:37:18Yasi Salek?

  Full stop, period.

• 1:37:20Speaker 15

  Alternatively "normal Ireland".

• 1:37:22Yasi Salek?

He's like, "I take it back."

• 1:37:24Speaker 15

I'll conduct a seminar outside in the lobby later. My question is actually, out of movies that have musicians maybe in a breakout role, is there any that are favorites? So thinking like Eight Miles, Star is Born.

• 1:37:39Speaker 06

  That's a great question.

• 1:37:41Speaker 15

Anything in that realm? Or Purple Rain, of course.

• 1:37:45Yasi Salek?

  Great question.

• 1:37:46Speaker 00

  First off was Once.

• 1:37:49Yasi Salek?

  Such a good movie.

• 1:37:50Speaker 00

Glenn Hansard and Marquita Ergova, I think.

• 1:37:55Speaker 05

That's good, that's right. Glenn Hansard? Yeah.

• 1:37:59Speaker 06

I guess you could, Complete Unknown would work for this. Apparently Timothy Chalamet is Jack White and James Blake now, so.

• 1:38:08Speaker 05

Did you get like paid by Searchlight? This is like the eighth time you've brought up a Complete Unknown.

• 1:38:12Speaker 06

Well, I wanted to mention something that was more recent. Yeah.

• 1:38:17Speaker 00

  Ooh, of course, of course.

• 1:38:20Speaker 05

  What about?

• 1:38:21Speaker 06

  Neecap, great shout.

• 1:38:22Speaker 05

Neecap is good, yeah. Lady Sings the Blues, Diana Ross, right?

• 1:38:27Yasi Salek?

Your classic sister like it? I don't know, man.

• 1:38:33Yasi Salek?

  This is a hard one.

• 1:38:34Speaker 05

Spoon Man, in the movie Spoon Man?

• 1:38:36Yasi Salek?

Well, obviously it's Eddie Vedder's turn as the drummer in Citizen Dick in Singles.

• 1:38:42Speaker 06

What does he say? It's like, "When you succeed, we succeed."

• 1:38:47Yasi Salek?

"A win for you is a win for us."

• 1:38:52Yasi Salek?

Who else has been? Courtney Love's been in many films, she's done a great job. Sid and Nancy.

• 1:38:59Speaker 06

I think it's a great place to end, on Sid and Nancy.

• 1:39:02Yasi Salek?

Thank you so much for coming tonight.

• 1:39:03Speaker 00

  Thank you so much.

• 1:39:17Yasi Salek?
