D'Arcy Carden Returns

D’Arcy Carden (Loot, The Good Place, The Handmaid’s Tale) is an Emmy Award-nominated actor and comedian. D’Arcy returns to the Armchair Expert to discuss forming a bond with travel show co-host Sherry Cola through working together on Nobody Wants This, being a musical comrade of Wobby Wob’s, and insisting that she suffers from time blindness. D’Arcy and Dax talk about finding best friendship in her husband since their early twenties, exhibiting some addictive behavior when it comes to attending concerts, and the most scared she’s ever been acting. D’Arcy explains playing a lot of emotion as a comedy girl in her upcoming show The Five-Star Weekend, what she cries about in real life, and getting to play a super fake Italian in Loot. • 0:00Dax Shepard?

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dax Shepard and I'm joined by Monica Mouse.

• 0:04Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 0:05Dax Shepard?

  Hi.

• 0:06Speaker 01

  Monica Lion.

• 0:07Dax Shepard?

Monica Lion. Mouse with a heart of a lion. Our friend, sweet D'Arcy Carden is here today.

• 0:14Speaker 01

  Darcy.

• 0:15Dax Shepard?

  What was her robot's name?

• 0:16Speaker 01

  Her robot?

• 0:17Dax Shepard?

  On the Good Place.

• 0:18Speaker 01

  Oh, Janet.

• 0:20Dax Shepard?

  Janet.

• 0:21Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 0:21Dax Shepard?

Sweet Janet. Yeah, Darcy's a good buddy. She's just the funniest and loveliest lady.

• 0:26Speaker 01

Yeah, she's super fun. This was a great chat.

• 0:29Dax Shepard?

She is an actor, a comedian, an improv genius.

• 0:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 0:33Dax Shepard?

The Good Place, A League of Their Own, Barry, Broad City, Nobody Wants This. And currently on Apple TV Plus, she is on Loot, the endlessly funny show with Maya Rudolph, and my good friend Nat Faxon. Please enjoy D'Arcy Carden. We get support from Quince.

• 0:52Speaker 01

I have to say, I am so ready for fall. I want sweaters. I've been craving a true crisp morning where I actually need a jacket. I can't wait.

• 1:00Dax Shepard?

I'm fully there. The second it dips below 70, I'm like, this is my season. Give me the layers, give me the boots, give me a reason to wear something other than a t-shirt. And honestly, that's why I love Quince, because fall is when your wardrobe actually has to show up. And everything at Quince is 50 to 80% less than similar brands. We're talking 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters, starting at $60.

• 1:23Speaker 01

$60. $60 for cashmere that you'd expect from a luxury brand without the luxury price tag. It's amazing. Gets me every time. It really shouldn't be real, but it is because they go straight to the factories, they skip the middlemen, and they just hand you the savings. The stuff isn't trendy. It's the kind of pieces you grab over and over because they work every time.

• 1:41Dax Shepard?

The 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters for me are it. When I look at Steve McQueen, this man owned a couple of sweaters he wore all the time, and he looks iconic.

• 1:50Speaker 01

  It's a uniform.

• 1:51Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:52Speaker 01

And Quince isn't just about the clothes. They have hotel-quality bedding, cookware, bath essentials, thoughtfully designed furniture. You can really go there and outfit your entire apartment or house. So if you're in need of any kind of fall refresh at home, too, same quality, same attention to detail for every corner of your life.

• 2:09Dax Shepard?

Find your next fall favorites at Quince. Download the Quince app for app-exclusive offers or go to quince.com. Get free shipping on your order and 365-day returns. Now available in Canada and the UK, too. And when Quince asks where you heard about them, let them know it was Armchair Expert. It's the best way to support the show. We get support from AG1. Fall is that time when your body and mind are getting ready for the winter. You're settling in, bracing for the cold. Your body's already running a deficit from the shorter days and broken sleep patterns. You don't want a nutrient deficit stacked on top of that, too.

• 2:45Speaker 01

That's where your AG1 routine earns its spot. It's not fixing your sleep or your alarm time. It's giving your body what it needs so the dark mornings don't tank you before you even start. One scoop, cold water every morning before anything else.

• 2:58Dax Shepard?

AG1 Next Gen has 75-plus ingredients, vitamins, minerals, pre- and probiotics, superfoods, backed by four separate gold standard clinical trials. Key nutrient levels improved with three months of consistent use.

• 3:12Speaker 01

That's the part people miss. It's not a one-day fix. It's what happens when you stay consistent.

• 3:16Dax Shepard?

It's an easy, everyday thing. I've added it to my morning routine and I'm going to tell you, I actually love the taste of it. It's like Pavlovian. I drink it and I know, mm, I'm going to get that little vitamin buzz.

• 3:26Speaker 01

Well, that's also the thing. When you do it first thing in the morning, you already feel kind of self-esteem because you're like, I already did something good for myself.

• 3:33Dax Shepard?

Yes. Go to drinkag1.com/dax and for a limited time, get a free immunity bundle, including a bottle of omega-3 fish oil and a bottle of vitamin D3K2 with your first subscription order of AG1 Next Gen or AG1 Pro. That's drinkag1.com/dax. And after checkout, be sure to let them know that Armchair Experts sent you.

• 4:15Dax Shepard?

  Is it intimidating?

• 4:16Speaker 02

Take it in. I mean, it's so. I feel like I was in.

• 4:19Dax Shepard?

  A fucking joke last time?

• 4:21Speaker 02

No, now you get. Not a joke, not a joke. Just, it was not done. It was not done. I feel like there was a bathroom with a door not on.

• 4:29Dax Shepard?

  That's right. That's right. That's right.

• 4:31Speaker 02

  This is like.

• 4:31Dax Shepard?

  But that was.

• 4:32Speaker 02

  That was done, yeah. Darby.

• 4:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, has that happened often?

• 4:37Speaker 02

My husband calls me Darby all the time.

• 4:39Dax Shepard?

Okay, so that should have been offensive, but it's worked out.

• 4:41Speaker 02

Jason calls me Darby all the time as a nickname and will say it in front of people and I can see like a look of panic on their faces. Yeah, like have I been saying it wrong? Does he ever call you Darbles? No, but. I want you to.

• 4:54Speaker 01

  I'm going to.

• 4:55Speaker 02

I really want you to call me Darbles.

• 4:57Dax Shepard?

  Darble.

• 4:58Speaker 01

  Darbles, how are you?

• 4:59Speaker 02

  Darbles is good.

• 5:00Dax Shepard?

Yeah, Darbles is cute. It sounds like a friend of Bam Bam's or Pebbles on the Flintstones.

• 5:06Speaker 01

  Yeah. Your hair looks gorgeous.

• 5:09Dax Shepard?

  You're shooting right now?

• 5:10Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 5:10Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 5:11Speaker 02

  I'm shooting a travel show.

• 5:13Speaker 01

  Oh, fun.

• 5:14Dax Shepard?

Kristen mentioned this, but it's not anywhere to be found in my research.

• 5:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:18Dax Shepard?

  Is it top secret?

• 5:20Speaker 02

  Maybe.

• 5:21Speaker 01

  Should I split?

• 5:21Dax Shepard?

  Absolutely.

• 5:22Speaker 01

  HGTV.

• 5:23Dax Shepard?

  What?

• 5:25Speaker 02

  HGTV.

• 5:26Dax Shepard?

I thought you said she TV.

• 5:28Speaker 02

She TV, I'm starting a new channel.

• 5:30Dax Shepard?

I don't want to offend anyone, but HGTV could be called she TV, right? I think it's a largely female.

• 5:36Speaker 02

I bet it is. I should do some looking around.

• 5:37Dax Shepard?

Kind of like ID, is that a network and it's only murder stuff?

• 5:41Speaker 02

  Is it?

• 5:41Dax Shepard?

  I think there's a network called ID.

• 5:43Speaker 01

You would know. I know that.

• 5:45Speaker 02

I want to take five full minutes to just look at everything.

• 5:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay, take it all in.

• 5:48Speaker 02

  Okay, just silence.

• 5:50Speaker 01

HGTV also has some home flippy stuff and construction. They had, what was that show with Magnolia?

• 5:57Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 5:57Speaker 01

  You know, husband-wife team.

• 6:00Speaker 02

  Joanna Gaines?

• 6:01Speaker 01

  Gaines.

• 6:02Speaker 02

  And husband Chip. Chip Gaines.

• 6:04Dax Shepard?

  I met her.

• 6:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's out and about.

• 6:07Dax Shepard?

In Waco, Texas. She did the factory for the diapers.

• 6:11Speaker 02

  Oh, whoa.

• 6:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it was really cute.

• 6:13Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's stylish.

• 6:14Dax Shepard?

I think they're all set up in Waco. Okay, back to your show that's on HGTV. Home and gardening television.

• 6:19Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 6:19Speaker 01

  Gardens, home and garden.

• 6:21Speaker 02

  Anyway.

• 6:22Speaker 01

We're not allowed to talk about it.

• 6:23Speaker 02

  No, I mean.

• 6:25Dax Shepard?

  What's the premise?

• 6:26Speaker 02

We are checking out vacation rental properties. Let's say they are very unique.

• 6:33Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 6:34Speaker 02

It's funny, we're in it right now, so there's been no talk of talking about it.

• 6:37Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 6:38Speaker 02

So I don't know what I'm really allowed to say.

• 6:39Speaker 01

It's like a one inch house.

• 6:41Dax Shepard?

You're not in a Star Wars prequel.

• 6:43Speaker 02

I thought you were gonna say, you're not in a Star Wars house. I'm like, we could be.

• 6:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 6:46Dax Shepard?

  Okay, right.

• 6:47Speaker 02

I'm co-hosting it with Sherri Cola, who you know from Kristen's show.

• 6:51Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 6:52Speaker 02

  She plays there up.

• 6:54Dax Shepard?

  She plays the Rob.

• 6:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. She's Rob. Okay, and you guys are old friends?

• 6:58Speaker 02

We met on the set of Nobody Wants This.

• 7:02Dax Shepard?

Season one. And already are traveling together and staying in themed homes?

• 7:07Speaker 02

You get to know someone hella well.

• 7:09Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 7:10Dax Shepard?

Do you both have BDP? Because that sounds very close, borderline personality.

• 7:14Speaker 02

  I don't.

• 7:15Dax Shepard?

  You don't?

• 7:16Speaker 01

  BPD.

• 7:17Dax Shepard?

  BPD.

• 7:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:18Dax Shepard?

  Boogie Down Productions.

• 7:20Speaker 02

The people that do our hair and makeup, our staff and Emma, people from good places. It's such a family, good vibe.

• 7:26Speaker 01

  Darcy, your character, Ryan.

• 7:29Speaker 02

  Ryan.

• 7:30Speaker 01

  Is on the floor.

• 7:31Dax Shepard?

Do you know Rob, sorry, do you know Rob independently from here?

• 7:34Speaker 02

We go to the same concerts.

• 7:35Speaker 01

Oh, shit. Then you guys have an intimacy we don't know.

• 7:40Speaker 02

  We do, we do.

• 7:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's the part of Rob, that's the Venn diagram part that none of us overlap on, the music.

• 7:46Speaker 02

  I overlap.

• 7:46Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes.

• 7:47Speaker 02

Yeah, so we'll kind of be like, hey, we're at that show, we're at that show, they're playing at this place.

• 7:51Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 7:52Speaker 02

Because I'm just kind of young and cool like him.

• 7:54Speaker 01

  Yeah, you definitely are.

• 7:55Dax Shepard?

It's also, you have a pedigree. Your father owned a very prominent, BAM?

• 7:59Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 8:00Speaker 02

  DAX?

• 8:00Dax Shepard?

Is that what it's called? BAM, BAM?

• 8:01Speaker 02

  Good job.

• 8:02Dax Shepard?

Thank you. I did not write that down in my notes. That's seven years old.

• 8:05Speaker 01

  Good job.

• 8:05Speaker 02

  Is it really?

• 8:06Dax Shepard?

Well, I think we interviewed you.

• 8:08Speaker 02

  We did.

• 8:08Dax Shepard?

  Seven years ago.

• 8:09Speaker 02

  Isn't that also wild?

• 8:10Speaker 01

  No.

• 8:11Dax Shepard?

  Yes, 2018.

• 8:13Speaker 02

That feels like three years ago to me.

• 8:14Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 8:15Speaker 02

Because the COVID years, they disappear.

• 8:18Speaker 01

  I agree.

• 8:18Speaker 02

I can't believe that was so long ago.

• 8:20Dax Shepard?

  I can't either.

• 8:21Speaker 01

Sherri Cola has, I assume, an improv about checking in on you. She's checking in on you and she's like, do you need me to make you a plate?

• 8:29Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 8:29Speaker 01

And I thought that was so funny.

• 8:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:32Speaker 01

And it's because you guys are BFFs. And now it all makes sense.

• 8:35Speaker 02

Our friendship comes from that show completely. A lot of texties and DMs and stuff, but we spent time together on that show and really formed a bond.

• 8:43Dax Shepard?

And are you traveling all over the country?

• 8:45Speaker 02

Let's see what we've hit so far, if I can remember, and I can't.

• 8:47Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 8:48Speaker 01

  That's fine.

• 8:48Speaker 02

  Arkansas, Missouri.

• 8:50Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 8:51Speaker 02

  Alabama, Kansas.

• 8:53Dax Shepard?

  Great.

• 8:54Speaker 02

  Tennessee, Texas, Oklahoma, Idaho.

• 8:57Dax Shepard?

So it's the Bible Bell. Is it called touring the Bible Bell?

• 9:01Speaker 02

No, it's not. And I don't think that was necessarily on purpose.

• 9:03Dax Shepard?

And when you went to Missouri, were you in a haunted house in the Ozarks?

• 9:07Speaker 02

We haven't done a haunted house yet.

• 9:08Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 9:09Dax Shepard?

Because we just had an expert on. And there's a whole town that caters to, everything's haunted and they host like a zombie festival.

• 9:15Speaker 02

Where do you guys land with, does that excite you or does that freak you out?

• 9:19Dax Shepard?

  Neither.

• 9:20Speaker 02

  Okay, you're like, don't care.

• 9:21Dax Shepard?

Sadly, I wish I got either scared or excited.

• 9:24Speaker 02

Right. I'm more scared than not scared, but when you're in New Orleans or something and people want to go on a haunted tour, I'm not so moved to do that.

• 9:31Speaker 01

Mm-hmm. But because of the fear?

• 9:33Speaker 02

The fear would be a helpful reason to not do it, but I kind of just don't care because I'm a little bit like, I don't believe in it.

• 9:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:39Dax Shepard?

  Of course.

• 9:40Speaker 01

You're afraid of believing in it. That's how I am. Like, I don't. With the question mark.

• 9:44Speaker 02

  Right, right, right.

• 9:45Speaker 01

  Because you never know.

• 9:46Speaker 02

Right. Okay, we shouldn't go here. But the way some people feel about religion, about God, if they're like, maybe I don't believe in it, but just in case, I do.

• 9:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:56Speaker 02

That's how I feel about ghosts.

• 9:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:57Speaker 02

Where I'm like, I don't believe in it, but just in case they're real, maybe I do.

• 10:00Speaker 01

Please don't come to me. Yeah.

• 10:02Dax Shepard?

No, okay, but to really get into that, the God one has a clear incentive. Like, I don't really believe, but I'm making enough space that if there is, I get to go to heaven.

• 10:11Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 10:11Dax Shepard?

Is the ghost thing to appease their egos? Like, I should believe just enough so I don't offend them?

• 10:17Speaker 02

Because if they do want to haunt me, I want them to be friendly.

• 10:20Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 10:21Speaker 02

I want them to be like, oh, I proved you were real, babe.

• 10:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Oh, you want to see real?

• 10:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:25Dax Shepard?

Watch this blood come out of your eyes backwards.

• 10:27Speaker 02

  I don't want that.

• 10:28Speaker 01

This guy we had on doesn't believe in ghosts, but saw one.

• 10:30Speaker 02

I feel like a lot of people say stuff like that.

• 10:32Speaker 01

Maybe we shouldn't believe, because if we believe, then they will come over. They're like, hey, I know you believe in me, as opposed to us not believing, and then they are like, we're not dealing with her.

• 10:41Speaker 02

I believe in scary movies, if that makes sense. Scary movies freak me out for my entire life, more than like a real ghost would.

• 10:48Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, totally.

• 10:50Speaker 02

What the hell does that mean?

• 10:50Dax Shepard?

Do you love horror movies? Do you watch them?

• 10:52Speaker 02

I don't, I don't. I wish I did, but I don't. But the ones that I've seen, which are pretty tame, they're like in the M. Night Shyamalan world, or like the...

• 10:59Speaker 01

  Oh, sure, Sixth Sense?

• 11:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:00Dax Shepard?

  Thriller.

• 11:00Speaker 02

Or like a Midsommar, or something like that, you know?

• 11:03Speaker 01

  Oh, sure.

• 11:03Speaker 02

I can't handle it, but those images stick with me for my life. There's an image from Signs.

• 11:10Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 11:10Speaker 02

Of like an alien on a roof that somehow has connected with my brain when I wash my face. So when I wash my face every night, I have to open my eyes pretty quickly, or I'm going to start seeing that alien.

• 11:21Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 11:22Speaker 02

And now it's going to just continue.

• 11:23Speaker 01

  This is a little OCPD.

• 11:25Speaker 02

  Okay, go on.

• 11:26Dax Shepard?

  OCDP?

• 11:27Speaker 01

  Nope. OCPD.

• 11:29Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 11:30Speaker 01

  Obsessive compulsive.

• 11:32Dax Shepard?

  No, I think it's OCDP.

• 11:34Speaker 01

  Okay, obsessive compulsive disorder plus?

• 11:37Speaker 02

  Primary?

• 11:38Speaker 01

Primary, primate? No, I think it's obsessive compulsive personality disorder.

• 11:43Speaker 02

  Disorder, okay.

• 11:43Dax Shepard?

  No, hold on, hold on.

• 11:46Speaker 02

  OC.

• 11:47Dax Shepard?

  Hold on, hold on.

• 11:48Speaker 02

  I wish it was.

• 11:48Speaker 01

Who do you think's gonna be better about saying letters in the right order?

• 11:51Speaker 02

Wow, she came for you, brother.

• 11:53Dax Shepard?

What does OCDP stand for? Here it is. OCDP stands for Orange County Drum and Percussion.

• 12:01Speaker 02

  That's what you meant.

• 12:02Speaker 01

  That's what I said.

• 12:03Speaker 03

  Obsessive compulsive personality disorder.

• 12:05Speaker 02

  Personality disorder.

• 12:06Speaker 01

You know, the exact thing I just said.

• 12:08Dax Shepard?

  No, you need a P.

• 12:09Speaker 03

  Personality disorder.

• 12:11Speaker 02

  OCPD.

• 12:13Speaker 01

  Crazy.

• 12:14Speaker 02

Wait, what happens when you guys disagree? I mean, I know you do it.

• 12:16Dax Shepard?

  Just having fun.

• 12:17Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 12:18Speaker 01

Oh, you didn't think it was DP?

• 12:19Dax Shepard?

No, I don't really care. I'm not really saying you're wrong.

• 12:23Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 12:23Dax Shepard?

I'm just having fun with OCDP.

• 12:25Speaker 01

  Okay, well, it's OCPD confirmed.

• 12:28Speaker 02

  OCPD.

• 12:28Speaker 01

  That feels a little OCPD.

• 12:30Speaker 02

  I didn't know this.

• 12:31Speaker 01

It's a little obsessive that you have the alien view every, every.

• 12:36Speaker 02

And I understand it. Damn alien.

• 12:38Speaker 01

And then you have to open your eyes as almost the compulsion to make sure he doesn't come.

• 12:42Speaker 02

Right. Ugh, I wish I didn't have that.

• 12:44Dax Shepard?

We had an expert on, and my understanding of when you add P is people who go, oh, I'm OCD because I like everything straight. That's not OCD because it's not in violation of your core values. You do think things should be orderly and straight. OCD is, I'm afraid I'm a pedophile. I'm afraid I'm gonna kill my baby. I'm afraid I'm gonna rape someone.

• 13:05Speaker 01

  It's like really intense.

• 13:06Dax Shepard?

They're mostly those fears that you're some kind of monster that you're not.

• 13:10Speaker 02

I had a friend who was always afraid he had left his stove on, would travel away from home and would have to come back home to make sure that the stove was off.

• 13:18Dax Shepard?

Yes, and we were told that's the one you see in movies and TV a lot, but that percentage wise, that's not the bulk of OCD. Bulk of OCD is people thinking they're these bad things that they don't want to be. So they're in total discord with their values.

• 13:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:32Dax Shepard?

Whereas OCDP is, the hell should be neat.

• 13:35Speaker 02

Sometimes when people say that they have OCD, I'm like, no, everybody has that. The thing that you're saying, and not that you're saying, but the thing that you think you have, everybody has that.

• 13:44Speaker 01

We just got into this recently.

• 13:45Dax Shepard?

We did, we did. Do you want to invite her in?

• 13:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 13:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 13:48Speaker 01

But I don't want her to feel trapped because it is sensitive and we just say everything.

• 13:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, right, right.

• 13:54Speaker 01

So you can say if you don't want to go here.

• 13:55Dax Shepard?

  You can say pass.

• 13:56Speaker 01

You can say pass, but ADHD.

• 13:58Speaker 02

  Oh, interesting. Yes, yes, yes.

• 14:00Speaker 01

Everyone has ADHD now, and I am like, but probably not.

• 14:04Speaker 02

Right, I totally get that. We are all told by TikTok, Instagram, whatever, all of these things.

• 14:09Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 14:10Speaker 02

So much of what. I think we think ADHD is is just phone stuff.

• 14:15Speaker 01

  Society making us scroll.

• 14:17Speaker 02

Right. That's interesting because also, do you have it?

• 14:21Speaker 01

  No.

• 14:21Speaker 02

  No, you don't. I know you don't.

• 14:22Speaker 01

And Dax says he thinks he might have it.

• 14:25Speaker 02

And I think I might have it, but I think I'm also, I was about to be like, but I've been saying it for years.

• 14:30Speaker 01

I've been saying it before it was a trend. I mean, that's fair.

• 14:34Speaker 02

My mom and I always say, undiagnosed ADD, since I was a kid. Why not just get it diagnosed?

• 14:39Dax Shepard?

  P.S. Most comedians are ADHD.

• 14:41Speaker 02

  Right, right, right.

• 14:41Dax Shepard?

Get real. We're talking to a very over indexing group to begin with, I think. But my take was more like, well, let's just be honest. Everything's a spectrum. And the point where they say it's a disorder versus it's not a disorder is arbitrary. They could have moved it four degrees to the right or the left. So yeah, it's a spectrum and we pick a point on it where we go, now it's a disorder or not. Like you can't actually get through school. Well, that's a disorder. You can't hold down a job. But I have a really hard time in school and I'm just barely getting through. Maybe that's on the other side. So my thing is like, who cares? I meet people all the time that say they're dyslexic. I'm pretty sure they didn't have eight weeks of testing at UCLA like I did. I don't really give a fuck. I know what they're trying to tell me about themselves.

• 15:22Dax Shepard?

They have a really hard time reading and they're probably smarter than their reading ability would be congruent with. So yeah, I get what they're trying to say, but I also get that it's annoying people self diagnose. But I'm more interested in why that bothers us.

• 15:35Speaker 02

Right. I think sometimes, oh God, 500 million streams. Good job, you guys.

• 15:39Speaker 01

We have got to move that.

• 15:40Speaker 02

  That's a great, no, it's great. It's gorgeous. Congrats.

• 15:42Dax Shepard?

Well, I'm just upset because it only represents Spotify.

• 15:44Speaker 02

Right. You're like, but what about the other ones?

• 15:46Dax Shepard?

I know. I actually should feel really good about it, but I always want to correct people.

• 15:49Speaker 02

  That's so funny.

• 15:50Speaker 01

Like we got this a lot of years ago. There's been a lot more.

• 15:53Speaker 02

This is certainly only a third of our.

• 15:56Dax Shepard?

What if I put a little sign underneath it and said, this is one third?

• 15:59Speaker 02

Yes. You think this is impressive?

• 16:01Dax Shepard?

  Sometimes it's my three.

• 16:03Speaker 02

Three out of four or five.

• 16:05Dax Shepard?

Depending on how low my self esteem is.

• 16:06Speaker 02

Right, right. I do think that some of it is like, if you yourself have ADHD or dyslexia and you know what you've struggled with and then someone's like, I have it too. It's a little bit like, man, you don't.

• 16:20Dax Shepard?

But yeah, let's think about like. So that's a great starting off point. That's the obvious. So what's going on is it? I think we all have this policing nature that we don't want anyone to get sympathy for something they don't deserve.

• 16:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, totally.

• 16:32Dax Shepard?

I think that's at least one of the big buckets of why it's triggering. So then the question is, why do we care if someone gets sympathy for something they don't deserve sympathy for? Why does that affect me?

• 16:41Speaker 02

  Does that lessen your struggle?

• 16:43Dax Shepard?

Or is there a finite amount of sympathy in the world and they just took it? Now I won't receive it?

• 16:48Speaker 01

I think that, I think that's true. If Darcy has gone through something pretty singular and unique, but then everyone says that they've also done that, it does probably limit my sympathy to her. Cause I'm like, well, everyone has that issue. So why are you complaining? And she kind of deserves to complain because it really happened to her.

• 17:05Dax Shepard?

But let's put it this way. I say I'm molested.

• 17:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:08Dax Shepard?

And you go, well, I was molested by my parent. Well, that's worse. So what are we saying? I shouldn't have said that because it's less than yours. As long as one exists that's worse than yours, you should never kind of acknowledge. So yeah, maybe I'm a four on the ADHD spectrum and someone's a nine. So a four shan't ever speak of it because we're protecting the nines. What's going on?

• 17:28Speaker 02

And then also what is sympathy? Not to say what's the point of it? Cause you want to feel seen and heard. But what is sympathy?

• 17:34Speaker 01

What does it do for you?

• 17:35Dax Shepard?

I think it is, oh, this person cares enough about me that they feel sad on my behalf.

• 17:40Speaker 02

Empathy towards me. They understand me. They're feeling for my plight.

• 17:44Dax Shepard?

Yes, it's important to them that I'm happy and flourishing. And when they find out I've had this setback, it kind of hurts them.

• 17:51Speaker 02

  It affects them.

• 17:52Dax Shepard?

But again, there's an infinite amount of that.

• 17:54Speaker 02

  Right.

• 17:54Dax Shepard?

It reminds me, did you ever have the warm fuzzy book as a kid? Did you have that?

• 17:57Speaker 02

  I don't know. I don't think I did.

• 17:58Dax Shepard?

It was a book my mom swore by as our favorite family book you read at night. It's about a little land where everyone's born with a warm fuzzy bag and then you give your warm fuzzies out. And then a man comes to town and he sets up a kiosk and he's selling cold pricklies. And he lets everyone know, you know, that you have a limited amount of warm fuzzies. You can't give them all out. Start using these so you don't use up your warm fuzzies. But the warm fuzzies were infinite. And now everyone starts trading these cold pricklies because they think there's a limit on the warm fuzzies.

• 18:26Speaker 02

  What a good book.

• 18:26Dax Shepard?

It kind of ruins the whole town.

• 18:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 18:29Dax Shepard?

Of course they find their way back to warm fuzzies.

• 18:31Speaker 02

Thank God, thank God, thank God. Oh my God. I was about to.

• 18:33Speaker 01

Glad you, she was gonna have nightmares about that.

• 18:34Speaker 02

I'm washing my face. I see these little cold pricklies.

• 18:38Dax Shepard?

And then I guess maybe another legit fear would be like, oh, if I acknowledge this person's thing, are they getting off the hook for responsibilities? Like, is this an excuse they're going to be using going forward? So then maybe there's some kind of reciprocity driving it. Again, I just think it's more interesting what's really angering or rubbing people the wrong way about it. And I experienced it too. I'm not above it.

• 19:01Speaker 01

Right. I think people also just don't want to be around people complaining all the time. I guess it depends on how much they're leaning in on it.

• 19:09Speaker 02

Right. When somebody is telling you something personal and it's maybe out of 10, and I have experienced it out of five, I do resist saying my thing. It's a tricky balance of wanting to be like, I see you, I hear you, I've experienced it and you know.

• 19:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I can think of the worst time I saw this. A dude in my meeting's son had died as a young adult of cancer. And then another man in the group was then explaining in his share how he knew what he was going through because he had had testicle cancer that he beat really quickly. And I was like, oh, boy.

• 19:42Speaker 01

  That's a great example.

• 19:44Dax Shepard?

But then we get into specifics, which we had all agree. If someone's sharing a really heartbreaking and setback-y story that their condition created, duh, you shouldn't compare it to your four. But if you're just talking about having some of the attributes of ADHD, which I have a ton of, I'm not trying to trump someone's bad, then why would anyone care?

• 20:06Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Case by case?

• 20:07Dax Shepard?

  Case by case.

• 20:09Speaker 01

Case by case is a great way to end a conversation.

• 20:12Speaker 02

Almost anything. Case by case? You guys, what else?

• 20:18Speaker 01

I will say, since we had the argument, I was like, maybe he does have it.

• 20:22Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 20:23Speaker 01

I started seeing you through the lens of having it. And I was like, oh, maybe.

• 20:29Speaker 02

  Right.

• 20:29Dax Shepard?

What opened me up to the notion was Gabor Maté is an expert on ADHD. Have you ever heard his name, Gabor Maté? He's this incredible man who was working with heroin addicts up in Canada. And he's just a pioneer in all these wonders. He's a very Esther Perel type character. And I was walking him to his car and he just said, have you ever been diagnosed with ADHD?

• 20:49Speaker 02

  You're like, sir.

• 20:50Dax Shepard?

I think that was very, you know, if I ask a guy, has he ever identified as an alcoholic? That guy might want to take a look at himself if I'm asking that.

• 20:58Speaker 02

  And he's an expert.

• 20:59Dax Shepard?

One of the premier experts in ADHD. I just went, he didn't say that out of the blue.

• 21:04Speaker 02

Yeah. And so have you checked into it?

• 21:05Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 21:06Speaker 02

  Right.

• 21:06Dax Shepard?

  You don't need to, right?

• 21:07Speaker 01

You're living great. That's my, okay, then we're circling back to my thing where I'm like, but if you're doing good, what's the point of looking for the quote, problem?

• 21:18Dax Shepard?

Right. So great. So I think this is where we have a misunderstanding. I'm never excusing anything I do with this ADHD thing. I'm only talking about my ADHD nature, which is like, I try to brush my teeth. I can't do it. It pains me like crazy to stand in front of the mirror and brush my teeth. The second I start brushing them, I go to my closet to do a task, to multitask. And then I get distracted by that task. I'm no longer brushing my teeth. Do you do this with your brush and your teeth?

• 21:44Speaker 02

Not brushing teeth, but so many.

• 21:45Dax Shepard?

So many things, right? It's like, I physically can't stand in front of that mirror and do it. Well, that's weird. I can do a lot of things that require willpower. I have this very outside sense of justice, which Timothy told me.

• 21:55Speaker 01

  But I do too.

• 21:57Dax Shepard?

It's not because you have one thing. I'm saying here are the list of things that are normal for ADHD. And I have a lot of those things and I haven't used it once as an excuse for anything.

• 22:07Speaker 02

I use the time thing as an excuse in a way where I'm like, I'm a piece of shit.

• 22:11Speaker 01

  Like being late?

• 22:11Speaker 02

  Being late.

• 22:12Speaker 01

  You were early today, girl.

• 22:13Speaker 02

  Yes, I was.

• 22:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:15Speaker 02

  Well, I missed you guys.

• 22:16Speaker 01

  I know.

• 22:17Speaker 02

And I live really, really close.

• 22:19Dax Shepard?

  I live in the backyard.

• 22:20Speaker 02

But I blame it on ADHD or time blindness. I mean, the amount of times I've said to my husband, I have time blindness. Like, I have it. I have that condition. I need you to help me.

• 22:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:32Dax Shepard?

See, that one does trigger me because again, it's an excuse for being late.

• 22:35Speaker 02

It is an excuse. I also think I have it, whatever that means, whatever that means, whatever that means. But I also know I could correct. I'm going to say that I got this from my dear sweet mom, who's time blind or whatever we want to say. Love you, Lori. Love you. You know, you have this. I'm not talking shit about you. You know, you have this. You'd admit it. Wouldn't panic about being late until we were late and then the panic would be at a 12. It's like the science of time didn't exist.

• 22:57Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 22:58Speaker 02

And then we'd be late and then we would all panic.

• 23:00Speaker 01

But maybe yours is nurture then, not nature.

• 23:03Speaker 02

  Oh, interesting.

• 23:04Speaker 01

You grew up in that house.

• 23:05Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 23:06Speaker 01

Then you are used to behaving like that. So of course.

• 23:09Speaker 02

You're right. It's not like in my.

• 23:11Speaker 01

  In your genes.

• 23:12Speaker 02

  Yeah, I don't know.

• 23:13Speaker 01

  Maybe it is.

• 23:14Dax Shepard?

  I bet it is.

• 23:14Speaker 02

Yeah. Also, I could just correct it. And I do correct it in certain ways. Having a clock in the bathroom has changed my life.

• 23:20Speaker 01

  Smart.

• 23:21Dax Shepard?

So I was hearing Trevor Noah speak recently. He's ADHD. I don't know officially or he declared it, but he said for an ADHD person like himself. There's only now and not now.

• 23:34Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 23:35Dax Shepard?

So his example is, we're going out to eat at 7:30. That's not now.

• 23:39Speaker 02

  That's not now.

• 23:40Dax Shepard?

So I don't even think about that. And then his friend starts getting ready at 6:45. He's like, what are you doing? Well, I'm getting ready for dinner. When's dinner? That's not now. I guess I accept that that's how he's computing time. And yeah, no wonder he's never prepared for anything because you can only do it when it's now.

• 23:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:57Dax Shepard?

But again, then I think you need a system, which is like, oh, dinner's 7:30. So alarm at seven to get ready.

• 24:03Speaker 02

Exactly. You have to counter it.

• 24:04Dax Shepard?

Because I'll never feel like it's time to get ready.

• 24:06Speaker 02

Yeah. Husband Jason is the complete opposite early. He's got it all together.

• 24:10Dax Shepard?

  Conscientious.

• 24:11Speaker 02

  Yes, exactly.

• 24:12Dax Shepard?

  Handsome, as we've discussed.

• 24:13Speaker 02

Yes, very handsome. So we do time check. Or he's allowed to say time check, or I'm allowed to say time check. And it's not like a nagging thing. I love that.

• 24:20Dax Shepard?

Will you deliver it to me?

• 24:22Speaker 02

Time check. If I'm getting ready, or I'll say, give me time checks throughout. Like, we're getting ready to, we have to leave at seven. You can time check me for the next two hours.

• 24:31Dax Shepard?

I have to do this with Kristen. I have to virtually stay in the same room as her when she's getting ready. I have to sit on the bed and like just monitor how deeply lost she's getting in it.

• 24:42Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 24:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 24:43Speaker 02

Me too. Sometimes Jason will be like, nope, don't put music on. No, you know, that's gonna get you off track. Focus on what you're doing. Is he a Virgo? He's a Cancer. I've realized he's my dad. In like a way that I'm down with. Yes. Because I love him. He's my best friend. He's hot as hell. Yeah. I also love my dad. Like, they're two different things. Hot as hell. Yeah, hot as hell.

• 25:02Dax Shepard?

That is hot as hell, though, isn't it?

• 25:04Speaker 02

It really is. But I've realized recently, we have really fallen into, he's my dad. He protects you. Yeah. I bet we fought against it for the first few years of our relationship. And I think now we've either accepted it or like made it work for us. Like it.

• 25:17Dax Shepard?

  And are you his mom?

• 25:19Speaker 02

About some things. Maybe that's just being married.

• 25:21Dax Shepard?

I don't think it's easy for the person who's similar to the parent to be able to see it. Would he say that? You're like his mom?

• 25:28Speaker 02

No, I don't think he would. I'm baby, he's daddy.

• 25:31Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 25:32Speaker 02

  I'm baby, he's daddy. Okay.

• 25:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 25:34Speaker 02

It's not that he's like your specific dad. No, he's not like my dad. Sorry. He's not like my dad. He is my-

• 25:39Dax Shepard?

  He's father-like.

• 25:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:40Dax Shepard?

  Or yes. Okay, great.

• 25:41Speaker 02

This is kind of hot. Is it? I think so. Well, whatever it is, it works for us. Oh, my God. And I'm not trying to be like daddy. I'm not trying to be like, he's my daddy. I'm saying like, he takes care of me. I'm baby, and he's daddy. You feel safe with him. Yeah, he's got his shit together.

• 25:58Dax Shepard?

Own thing, and no one needs to have an opinion about it. You're going on how many years?

• 26:02Speaker 02

  We are going.

• 26:04Dax Shepard?

  Twentieth year?

• 26:04Speaker 02

  Yeah, like maybe eighteen, nineteen.

• 26:06Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 26:07Speaker 02

What year is it? Yeah, dude, twenty.

• 26:08Speaker 01

  Good. Congratulations.

• 26:11Dax Shepard?

  How old were you?

• 26:12Speaker 02

  When we got together?

• 26:13Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, twenty?

• 26:14Speaker 02

  Twenty-three.

• 26:15Dax Shepard?

Is there any party that's like, nah, I wish I would have done it a little later?

• 26:19Speaker 02

No, honestly, I was never hoping to find the one at that early of an age.

• 26:23Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 26:23Speaker 02

At all. From a child knew that I didn't want that.

• 26:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 26:27Speaker 02

I wanted to be free and live my life and be like a slut.

• 26:30Dax Shepard?

  Erica Yon.

• 26:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:32Speaker 01

  So you're, oh.

• 26:32Speaker 02

So my oh, it's a better way of saying it.

• 26:36Speaker 02

It's almost like we couldn't deny. In fact, we did push against each other in the beginning. We were like, this is too real.

• 26:43Dax Shepard?

  We're too young.

• 26:43Speaker 02

And we're too young. Let's not do this.

• 26:44Dax Shepard?

  Is he older?

• 26:45Speaker 02

  He's older, yeah.

• 26:46Dax Shepard?

  How much older?

• 26:47Speaker 02

  Four years. Is that right?

• 26:48Dax Shepard?

That's nice. That's on the low end.

• 26:50Speaker 01

  That's good. I like that.

• 26:51Speaker 02

Yeah, we just kind of couldn't deny it. We tried to deny it.

• 26:53Dax Shepard?

Do you guys have hall passes?

• 26:55Speaker 02

  No, we're so chill.

• 26:57Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 26:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:58Dax Shepard?

You're never watching a show and you go like, John Locke, or John, um.

• 27:04Speaker 02

  Not John Locke from Lost?

• 27:06Speaker 01

  Love John Locke.

• 27:07Dax Shepard?

Locke from the movie, Tom Hardy.

• 27:09Speaker 02

  Tom Hardy.

• 27:09Dax Shepard?

You're watching Gangland or whatever it's called and you're like.

• 27:12Speaker 02

  Mobland.

• 27:12Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I want a weird night with this quiet guy.

• 27:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, right.

• 27:15Dax Shepard?

Who like intimidates me and I, yeah.

• 27:18Speaker 02

  That's not taboo.

• 27:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 27:19Speaker 02

Not at all. For some reason, since the beginning. Also, our relationship started off as almost like instant best friends. We could not get enough of each other and we weren't hooking up. And so all of that stuff was already out there.

• 27:31Dax Shepard?

Now, do you think it's safer for the wife to do it than the man to do it?

• 27:36Speaker 02

He can do it. He loves Rachel Weisz.

• 27:39Dax Shepard?

  Oh, that's his.

• 27:40Speaker 02

  But I mean.

• 27:41Speaker 01

Who's who do I? You kind of look like her, so I get it.

• 27:43Speaker 02

  Monica?

• 27:44Speaker 01

I see it. I see it.

• 27:46Speaker 02

  I cry.

• 27:47Speaker 01

We have a problem here. We have to say.

• 27:49Speaker 02

  Okay, okay.

• 27:49Speaker 01

Because you can't have hall passes.

• 27:52Speaker 02

  Right. Oh.

• 27:53Speaker 01

When you have the ability to actually meet the person. The point of hall passes invented on Friends, a show I love.

• 28:00Speaker 02

Me too. I'm like you, just so you know.

• 28:02Speaker 01

  You are.

• 28:03Speaker 02

The Jennifer Henderson episode was really special, you guys.

• 28:05Speaker 01

  So special.

• 28:06Speaker 02

  It was really special.

• 28:07Speaker 01

  It was so special.

• 28:08Speaker 02

  I'm so happy for you.

• 28:09Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 28:10Speaker 02

  She likes you so much.

• 28:11Speaker 01

Oh, I like her so much.

• 28:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:13Speaker 01

That is meant for people who will not really run into this person. You guys could meet all these people.

• 28:20Speaker 02

  Right, right, right.

• 28:21Speaker 01

Yeah, so you can't have it.

• 28:23Speaker 02

I agree, the Hall Pass of it all, unless, then that's just, you can play your own game however you guys want.

• 28:27Dax Shepard?

That's right, you get to decide.

• 28:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's right.

• 28:30Dax Shepard?

But I do think if you're playing Hall Pass games and you're a guy and you want my advice.

• 28:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:35Dax Shepard?

I think you need to be smart about it.

• 28:36Speaker 02

  Right.

• 28:37Dax Shepard?

I think you're free to say like, I want to see Taylor Lautner in a towel. I'm going way back to make it innocuous. Remember when older women were like way into Taylor Lautner?

• 28:46Speaker 02

  Yeah, I did, I did.

• 28:47Dax Shepard?

This was a cultural phenom. Women were taking their daughters to those movies.

• 28:50Speaker 01

  Twilight movies.

• 28:51Dax Shepard?

And they were like screaming when a shirt came off and stuff, which again, I support.

• 28:55Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 28:56Dax Shepard?

It's so inappropriate, but of course, women are generally predators, so that's why it's fine. But anyway, so you're probably safe to go like, Lautner, Lautner, Lautner. But he shouldn't say like Sydney Sweeney.

• 29:08Speaker 02

  Right, right, right, right.

• 29:09Speaker 01

Sydney is a tricky one. You'll know in two years.

• 29:13Speaker 02

  Oh, that's true of it.

• 29:14Dax Shepard?

I just am obsessed with short and sweet Sabrina Carpenter's album from August of 2024.

• 29:20Speaker 02

  You're just discovering it?

• 29:21Dax Shepard?

On a level that I haven't been in.

• 29:22Speaker 02

That's great. Oh my God, I love that. Wait, you love her?

• 29:26Dax Shepard?

I love her, I just, I went with Delta on Sunday.

• 29:28Speaker 02

You got to see her live.

• 29:29Dax Shepard?

  I'm lovesick.

• 29:30Speaker 02

  It's not fun.

• 29:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's not over her, over watching this little girl at her first concert. Sing all the songs and dance. This is her girl. Lincoln's got Taylor in Delta Sabrina.

• 29:44Speaker 02

  Oh, she's so funny.

• 29:46Dax Shepard?

  Yes, and clever.

• 29:47Speaker 02

And she gets it. She's really ahead of the joke. She's funny.

• 29:51Dax Shepard?

She's funny. She did a great job hosting SNL.

• 29:53Speaker 02

She's really legit funny. She funny.

• 29:56Speaker 01

  She funny.

• 29:56Speaker 02

I love all these little pop girlies.

• 29:58Speaker 01

  I know, it's fun.

• 29:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:00Dax Shepard?

But yeah, one of the songs, I can't stop listening to, over and I've been listening to all day, every day for a week.

• 30:05Speaker 02

  What is it?

• 30:07Dax Shepard?

  Don't smile.

• 30:09Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 30:09Dax Shepard?

Don't smile. Do you know that one?

• 30:11Speaker 02

I probably do, I probably do.

• 30:12Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 30:12Speaker 02

But you just love it and you can't stop listening.

• 30:14Dax Shepard?

Don't smile because it happened, baby. Cry because it's over.

• 30:20Speaker 01

  Great twist she does.

• 30:21Speaker 02

Oh wait, she's so good at the twist.

• 30:23Speaker 01

  So good at the twist.

• 30:24Speaker 02

  I do know this song.

• 30:24Dax Shepard?

You're supposed to think about me every time that you hold her.

• 30:31Speaker 02

You kind of sing that whole thing.

• 30:33Dax Shepard?

Don't even try to pull off. You've got a sick voice.

• 30:37Dax Shepard?

  Has a sick voice.

• 30:38Speaker 02

Couldn't even get it out. Wait, what? What was I supposed to say? You were supposed to say you sound amazing?

• 30:42Dax Shepard?

It was like you're on the verge of saying you sound good.

• 30:46Speaker 02

No, you did. It was, you hit all the notes, brother. No, you did. You did do something. She like always has a celeb in every concert. Arrested. Does she ever arrest men or is it always women? I think it's women.

• 30:56Dax Shepard?

She arrested the guy on Saturday Night Live that has the character.

• 31:00Speaker 02

  Domingo.

• 31:00Dax Shepard?

Domingo. She did arrest Domingo once. But yes, I think it's, first of all, I'm one of 12 dudes in an audience of 22,000 people.

• 31:08Speaker 02

Right. It does feel like if you were there, everyone would be like, whoa.

• 31:11Dax Shepard?

And in fact, I almost want to apologize for being there because all these people are wearing their nighty gear. Cause that's her aesthetic. So it was like all these girls in these nighty outfits. I know they would have felt better if just there were none of us were there.

• 31:24Speaker 02

  No dads allowed.

• 31:25Dax Shepard?

Luckily, it was like a holding Delta's hands. I hope it buffeted.

• 31:28Speaker 02

Yeah, you weren't there alone. I didn't think about that part.

• 31:31Dax Shepard?

There's a panther in the hen house.

• 31:34Dax Shepard?

But there wasn't, because I was just thinking.

• 31:36Speaker 02

Cause you're just enjoying the concert.

• 31:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 31:38Speaker 02

She's so cute. She arrested Dakota and Elle Fanning. That's really fun. Come on.

• 31:43Dax Shepard?

I love it for being too hot.

• 31:45Speaker 02

Also, I feel like I remember that you don't love concerts. Am I right about that?

• 31:50Dax Shepard?

Yes. In general, what happens is I, again, this, now I'll say OCD, but it's not. I start obsessing about how long it's gonna be.

• 31:58Speaker 02

Okay, you want it to be done.

• 31:59Dax Shepard?

I don't even know if I want it to be done. It's just not knowing. It's a control thing, I think. I'm like, how long will this be and how many encores? I can't stand encores.

• 32:07Speaker 02

You know what? I wonder if this would help you. You can go to, I want to say it's like, radiofm.com or something. You could just Google this, but you can Google setlist.

• 32:17Dax Shepard?

  Setlist FM.

• 32:18Speaker 02

  What is it?

• 32:19Dax Shepard?

  Setlist FM.

• 32:20Speaker 02

  Setlist FM.

• 32:21Dax Shepard?

You guys are such nerds. I love it.

• 32:22Speaker 02

And you can Google the setlist and then you would know exactly. You'd be like, okay, they're on the fifth song. I have 10 more, whatever.

• 32:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 32:28Speaker 02

  It might help you.

• 32:29Dax Shepard?

Yes, I just start feeling a little confined.

• 32:32Speaker 02

I go to so many concerts. I go to too many concerts.

• 32:35Dax Shepard?

  Too many. One a week?

• 32:37Speaker 02

Honestly, no, but could. This is a weird thing that I get, which is, while I'm watching the concert, I'm enjoying it so much that I start. Fixating on that I have to come back tomorrow. Oh, sure. And then I'm like, missing the concert.

• 32:51Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 32:52Speaker 02

Then I'm like, do I have time in my schedule? Should I get tickets now? Yes. I gotta see this again. That song's done now. I want to see it again tomorrow. I get that.

• 32:58Dax Shepard?

That's addict-y. That's me. The second I enjoy something, my fear of it being gone is so overwhelming.

• 33:05Speaker 02

I have that hardcore at concerts.

• 33:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, interesting.

• 33:08Speaker 02

I do feel a little addicted to concerts because I kind of can't resist them. Even if I'm like spending too much money or canceling plans, I'm like, I have to go to this.

• 33:17Dax Shepard?

It takes over your life. Yes.

• 33:19Speaker 02

I think this is a good addiction. It's not a bad one. It's not very harmful. Did you see any of these last few Beyonce concerts? I didn't. But I feel like you should have.

• 33:27Dax Shepard?

  I love Beyonce.

• 33:27Speaker 02

  I know you do.

• 33:28Dax Shepard?

I would have loved to have seen her.

• 33:29Speaker 02

You would have loved, next time she comes, go. I've never missed her in LA in the last 13 years.

• 33:34Dax Shepard?

  How long are her shows?

• 33:35Speaker 02

  Three, yeah, it was three.

• 33:36Dax Shepard?

  Three hours?

• 33:37Speaker 02

Yeah. She's got a lot of songs to get to. She does, and it was, it was great. It was incredible, Monica. It was incredible. I had just gone to Renaissance, and then I feel like Cowboy Carter came right, like a day later. And I was like, I can't do this again. It's too expensive. I just saw her. And then I went and I was like, you idiot. I know. How could you have ever missed this? It was incredible. Yeah. It does feel a little life-changing when you see someone at the top of their game. Like, you're like, that's not a person. How is she doing this? She is on a different planet. Yeah.

• 34:07Dax Shepard?

My favorite performance I've ever seen in my life, I wasn't there, but just watching it, was her, Beyonce, on American Idol singing "One Plus One."

• 34:17Dax Shepard?

Look, I have my dream job. I get to talk to folks I admire like crazy and ask them virtually any question that I want to. I can't imagine a better way to spend my time. But even dream jobs have some not so dreamy parts. The stuff that gets in the way of the actual work. Now that's where ServiceNow's AI specialists come in. They don't just tell you what you should do about your busy work. They actually do it, start to finish. Cases closed, requests handled, no extra work for you. So you and your team can focus on what matters most, which for me is, are they obsessed with male bodies on the same level as I am?

• 38:00Speaker 02

  They never are.

• 38:13Speaker 02

You know what's funny? Maybe not. I have a playlist on my phone for songs to make me cry for acting. Oh, great. And that's on that.

• 38:21Dax Shepard?

  Is it?

• 38:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:22Dax Shepard?

  It's so beautiful.

• 38:23Speaker 02

Wait, what else is on there? I mean, I can't tell you all my secrets. No, I want to, I want to. I'll send it to you. Okay. It is kind of intimate.

• 38:31Dax Shepard?

I'm crying every time I listen to, say, uh...

• 38:36Speaker 02

  I can't do it again.

• 38:37Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 38:37Speaker 02

  We've now done it.

• 38:38Dax Shepard?

Well, I have so much anxiety now.

• 38:40Speaker 02

  Don't smile.

• 38:40Dax Shepard?

That you're gonna say it, but it's, um, don't smile.

• 38:44Speaker 02

  Okay. What just happened?

• 38:46Dax Shepard?

I'm crying every time I hear that song. But she's had to tell me the name of my favorite song like three times and she's bailing out.

• 38:51Speaker 02

You know, it's hard to remember names.

• 38:52Dax Shepard?

And I'm saying it's circular because I'm nervous she's gonna say it before I can think of it.

• 38:56Speaker 02

I thought you wanted me to say it. You look at me. Right.

• 38:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 38:59Speaker 02

You're like, don't say it. I got it.

• 39:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 39:00Speaker 02

And then you're like, there it's gone. Okay, I won't say it again.

• 39:02Dax Shepard?

I mean, I might not get it too.

• 39:04Speaker 02

Well, then that's the thing we're always dealing with. Have you guys ever been on a set where that happens with somebody's lines? Where they like can't get the line? But you know it. And then, no problem, let's take it again. Chill out, everybody. We're good. You're fine. And then you can just feel like when it comes to that moment that they're... They're searching, they're searching. They're searching and then it's sort of like falling down a... It's hell. And you just want to be like... Just relax. You start sweating. It's hell.

• 39:31Dax Shepard?

Well, Billy Crudup just told a story on the show this week, which was he got in that situation with Tom Cruise and Mission Impossible, because they had rewritten the scene, rewritten the scene. He got it that morning. It was like a huge monologue.

• 39:41Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 39:42Dax Shepard?

And he just couldn't do it.

• 39:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:43Dax Shepard?

And Tom was like, you ever work with cue cards, Billy? Well, we're gonna work with cue cards today.

• 39:48Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 39:48Dax Shepard?

Let's go. And then immediately had cue cards and he was holding them in front of his face and looking.

• 39:51Speaker 01

  Amazing, yeah.

• 39:52Dax Shepard?

  Tom was.

• 39:53Speaker 02

And did it work for Billy?

• 39:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I saw it. I had no idea that was being read from cue cards.

• 39:57Speaker 01

  I know.

• 39:58Speaker 02

  Love a problem solver.

• 39:59Dax Shepard?

  I do, too.

• 39:59Speaker 01

  Great. Let's just do it.

• 40:01Dax Shepard?

And also de-sanctifying, demystifying the whole thing where it's that fucking precious. You gotta get these words out.

• 40:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:07Dax Shepard?

What's the most scared you've ever been acting? Do you recall?

• 40:09Speaker 02

Hmm, scared, scared, scared. That episode of Good Place that we were in together, the Janice episode,

• 40:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 40:15Speaker 02

was sort of overall scary. That was definitely the most pressure I've ever had.

• 40:20Dax Shepard?

Because of the words or what you were supposed to convey that you were afraid you couldn't convey?

• 40:24Speaker 02

The words, playing all the different parts?

• 40:26Speaker 01

Yeah, for that episode, Darcy was every single character.

• 40:30Speaker 02

So it was like nailing the impressions. It was a very important episode story-wise. It felt like the weight of the show was on my shoulders for one episode and it was a lot of pressure. A show that I love with all my heart. There was no part of me that was like, eh, whatever. It was like, I'm gonna kill myself to make this right.

• 40:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yes, I must rise to this level.

• 40:52Speaker 02

Thanks, babe. Great episode. So do you.

• 40:54Dax Shepard?

  You got nominated, babe?

• 40:56Speaker 02

  I got nominated, babe.

• 40:58Dax Shepard?

Did they say, babe, a specific episode, babe?

• 41:00Speaker 02

Okay, I didn't get nominated for that episode. I got nominated the next year.

• 41:04Dax Shepard?

Okay, probably they were like, we should have nominated her for that episode. It's always like, these award shows are always a year behind, don't you think?

• 41:10Speaker 02

  Right, right, right.

• 41:10Dax Shepard?

You're seeing someone that's got best actor for that year. They were okay, but the year before they were brilliant and then they got overlooked and everyone acknowledged it.

• 41:17Speaker 02

I feel like Denzel has famously, maybe he won for Training Day, maybe, which he was amazing in, but I feel like whatever was the year before that was like his best.

• 41:26Speaker 01

That's why people think Timothy Chalamet is gonna win this year.

• 41:29Speaker 02

  Gotcha.

• 41:30Speaker 01

Because last year he did not win for A Complete Unknown.

• 41:33Speaker 02

Right, right, right. And who won?

• 41:34Speaker 01

Oh, Adrian Brody won for The Brutalist.

• 41:39Dax Shepard?

  Say.

• 41:40Speaker 02

  Say.

• 41:40Dax Shepard?

  Say thank you.

• 41:41Speaker 02

  Oh, oh, oh.

• 41:41Dax Shepard?

  No, don't, Christ, don't smile.

• 41:44Speaker 02

Say thank you. Monica, say thank you. I know, it's like, for what? What did I do? Literally.

• 41:50Dax Shepard?

That's not even my favorite song.

• 41:51Speaker 02

Wasn't even what we were talking about. Say thank you.

• 41:53Dax Shepard?

Is it gone already? Oh, my God.

• 41:54Speaker 02

Oh, my God. Maybe this is the ADHD. Say something, say anything. What is it? Don't smile.

• 42:01Dax Shepard?

Isn't it a hard title? Say anything. John Cusack.

• 42:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:08Dax Shepard?

Okay, so that was a scary one.

• 42:10Speaker 02

And then I shot something this summer. It's called The Five Star Weekend. And the cast is like.

• 42:15Dax Shepard?

  Chloe Sevigny.

• 42:15Speaker 02

Chloe Sevigny. Way to say her name correctly. Good job.

• 42:18Dax Shepard?

Thank you. I've got a story. I had a crush on her back when she was in all those Harmony Crane movies.

• 42:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 42:24Dax Shepard?

It was like, oh, this girl's so punk rock and cool.

• 42:26Speaker 02

  She really is.

• 42:27Dax Shepard?

But then this year at the Emmys, she did not win.

• 42:29Speaker 02

  Right.

• 42:30Dax Shepard?

And I happened to be seated directly behind her. So I handed her $20.

• 42:33Speaker 02

  Oh, I love that.

• 42:35Dax Shepard?

  As a consolation prize.

• 42:35Speaker 02

You know what's funny? I almost texted you three.

• 42:38Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you did.

• 42:38Speaker 02

Because I saw that you were right next to each other. And she left our set in Nantucket to go to the Emmys.

• 42:43Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 42:44Speaker 02

And so I was really day to day with her. So I was almost like.

• 42:47Dax Shepard?

  Do you love her?

• 42:47Speaker 02

I love her. Her fashion is off the charts. I went thrift shopping with her one time. You did not. And I was like, I think people would pay. This would be like. A charity thing. A million dollars to go thrifting with Chloe Sevigny.

• 42:59Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes.

• 43:00Speaker 02

Love her. And it was Jen Garner. Who we love. Just too much, the best. And then Gemma Chan and Regina Hall, Timothy Oliphant, who was just here, who we love so much.

• 43:10Dax Shepard?

Did he charm the fuck out of all you ladies?

• 43:12Speaker 02

Well, yeah. He charmed the fuck out of my husband.

• 43:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 43:16Speaker 02

He's charm-a-ma-ma-ma. We're going to dinner with him on Friday.

• 43:18Dax Shepard?

  He's sexy.

• 43:19Speaker 02

  I love him.

• 43:20Dax Shepard?

  He's so sexy.

• 43:20Speaker 02

And his amazing wife, they're just cool. Are you guys going to the Soho House? We're going to a place called Darling. Oh, okay. I haven't been. All that is to say, it's a drama. It's a comedy drama. I actually don't, I don't know what we're calling it yet.

• 43:33Dax Shepard?

  Is it on ID Network?

• 43:34Speaker 02

It's on ID. It's on she, she. No, it's on Peacock. There's a lot of emotion. And I'm comedy girl. There was certain scenes, I don't know if you'd call it scared, but it is that thing where you're like, you better bring it. You gotta show up today. You gotta show up. And there's no way to not. You have to. You know what's funny? Okay, I'm gonna pivot to this amazing show I'm so lucky to be a part of, Loot.

• 43:56Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 43:57Speaker 02

Okay. There's a scene where my character's crying. So I listened to my little playlist, got the tears ready. And then we did one take of it. It's me and Maya. And I'm like, well, that wasn't fun. I want to have fun. I can just, I don't want to say fake it, but what are you doing when it's full, broad comedy and you're crying? You are allowed to sort of ham it up a little bit.

• 44:17Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

• 44:19Speaker 02

My day on set with Maya and not being stuck in a corner by myself, listening to my playlist, is more important to me than if these tears are real or not.

• 44:26Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 44:27Speaker 02

I'm remembering one scene I had to do where it was a crying scene. This is years ago. And I'm looking down and I can feel the tear rolled down my cheek and I can also feel that my hair is covering it. And I was like, motherfucker.

• 44:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 44:39Speaker 02

Like, I would never, the character would never move her hair.

• 44:42Dax Shepard?

  Right. So you can see.

• 44:44Speaker 01

  That would be hilarious.

• 44:45Speaker 02

So this one is just for me, I guess.

• 44:47Speaker 01

Yeah. Do you cry in real life?

• 44:50Speaker 02

I do cry in real life, but honestly, for weird things.

• 44:53Speaker 01

  What makes you cry?

• 44:54Speaker 02

A lot of times it's music. My grandma died last year, who I have an incredible relationship with, love all the way up and down. When my mom told me that she died, I think I went, okay, okay. No, that's good, I said. What the hell kind of reaction is that?

• 45:10Speaker 01

  That's so human.

• 45:11Speaker 02

Right. Like, no tears, just like, no, it's actually okay.

• 45:14Dax Shepard?

And see, I want to see that in a movie because that's what really happens in real life. And it reminds me of things in real life.

• 45:20Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's weird.

• 45:21Speaker 01

Well, it's your brain trying to tell yourself it's good, it's okay, you don't need to freak out. You don't need to die because this is happening. It's actually good.

• 45:29Dax Shepard?

And just the notion that you connect with things when you hear them also. It can take months to understand someone died, even if you were there.

• 45:37Speaker 02

For sure. This is so cheesy, but Grandma Lila, she watched Jeopardy every night, as maybe everybody's grandma does. And I got to be on Jeopardy two weeks after she died.

• 45:46Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 45:47Speaker 02

But she, she did know. She knew I was going to.

• 45:50Dax Shepard?

Okay, she couldn't stay alive for another two weeks.

• 45:53Speaker 02

  I know, I know.

• 45:53Speaker 01

  Grandma.

• 45:55Dax Shepard?

  Grandma.

• 45:55Speaker 02

If you were disappointed in her, like, I couldn't just.

• 45:58Dax Shepard?

  She's so selfish.

• 45:59Speaker 02

But it was, it was one of the things that, when I realized, when my mom told me, oh, no, I told her that you were going to be on Jeopardy, that's when I lost it.

• 46:07Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 46:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, of course.

• 46:09Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 46:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 46:10Speaker 02

For some reason, the Jeopardy thing was really connected to her. So everything about that was really. Emotional.

• 46:15Dax Shepard?

All right, we're gonna talk about Lou, but there's two things I want to talk about that happened in the last seven years that I would like some info on.

• 46:21Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 46:21Dax Shepard?

  One is a Thanksgiving play.

• 46:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:24Dax Shepard?

  You were on Broadway.

• 46:25Speaker 02

  I was on Broadway.

• 46:26Dax Shepard?

  First of all, incredible.

• 46:27Speaker 02

  Thanks.

• 46:28Dax Shepard?

Did you ever have your eyes set on Broadway?

• 46:31Speaker 02

I had my little kid eyes only set on Broadway.

• 46:33Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay, wonderful.

• 46:35Speaker 02

And then when I was in college, right out of college, those years, I was doing a lot of regional theater, community theater with people that had been on Broadway, maybe five years older than me, so still young, but people that had been on Broadway and they'd been in this show and they'd been in that show, and then they come do this show and we do the show together and we're all in a show together and I'm gonna move to New York and you guys are on Broadway and I'm gonna be on Broadway. It was just like, that's the path.

• 46:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 46:59Speaker 02

And I see it because we're working together and that's where you are gonna go next. And then when I moved to New York and it wasn't like that, the first two years of living in New York, I hadn't discovered UCB yet. And so it was just auditioning for plays and not getting them and auditioning for like student films and getting them and them being weird. Yeah.

• 47:16Dax Shepard?

Going to someone's apartment for a casting.

• 47:18Speaker 02

Exactly, exactly. I had this very clear realization. I went and saw a musical called Forty Second Street, tap dancing. There's, in my mind, a hundred cast members. I don't know if it's 40 or whatever. It's just full of dancers.

• 47:31Dax Shepard?

  Sea of dancers.

• 47:31Speaker 02

Right. And I remember thinking, the girl in the back row is so much more talented than me and I can't even see her in the back row. Right. And she's on Broadway. Right. So I was like, this is not my skill set and so I need to find something else.

• 47:44Dax Shepard?

  Knock-knock comedy.

• 47:45Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 47:46Dax Shepard?

Okay, so exciting to get it.

• 47:47Speaker 02

  So exciting.

• 47:48Dax Shepard?

And then the premise is really funny. I'm really sad I didn't see it. Kristen told me she did see it and that you were spectacular and she loved it.

• 47:53Speaker 02

And we went and ate burgers afterwards.

• 47:55Dax Shepard?

But it's about four white teachers that put on a elementary school play about Thanksgiving with an attempt to make it politically correct.

• 48:03Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 48:04Dax Shepard?

And then somehow you do get someone that's posing as Native American.

• 48:08Speaker 02

  Me.

• 48:08Dax Shepard?

  Are you?

• 48:09Speaker 02

Yes. So I come in as the actress that just answered the casting call and she can play everything. She can play a doctor, she can play Native American.

• 48:19Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 48:19Speaker 02

You know what I mean? She's not smart at all. She was a dummy.

• 48:22Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 48:23Speaker 02

But also lovable, but also bad, but also I love her.

• 48:26Dax Shepard?

And she was vaguely Puerto Rican? What was it?

• 48:29Speaker 02

  She's vaguely me.

• 48:29Dax Shepard?

  She's you.

• 48:30Speaker 02

She could be anything. She's like a little ambiguous.

• 48:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 48:34Speaker 02

And that's all part of the play and it was written by Larissa Fasthorse, who's the first Native American woman to ever write a play on Broadway and has had so much success. Since then and before then, she's amazing. They sort of realized that the three people who are putting it on, who are Katie Finnarin, Chris Sullivan, and Scott Foley. Do you know any of these actors?

• 48:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 48:56Speaker 02

So great, amazing. And they are sort of as woke as can be and like really trying so hard to like do the best job.

• 49:04Dax Shepard?

And is it just gonna be a genocide play? Is that what it is?

• 49:07Speaker 02

But at first it's not. Once we sort of realize.

• 49:10Dax Shepard?

It's celebrating the same old colonial.

• 49:12Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, exactly. It's digging through what actually happened. Also, I'm like, this is two years ago. What was this play about? Because I did a hundred, a hundred nights of it. But we decided to put on a real Thanksgiving play. Once they realized that I'm Greek or whatever it was.

• 49:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, Greek, that's what it was.

• 49:28Speaker 02

Then we decided to really put on what it was really like. And it's really graphic and horrible.

• 49:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, not fun to watch.

• 49:33Speaker 02

Yeah. And we do that. Every night, I'm covered from head to toe in blood. All four of us are. Oh, wow. And you would come offstage and jump right into the shower. It was really fun. It's also really funny. It was fun to do a Broadway play where the audience was laughing from the beginning to the end.

• 49:49Dax Shepard?

I don't associate Broadway with comedy all that much.

• 49:52Speaker 02

Right. It was a struggle. I'm used to doing improv where you never do something twice.

• 49:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 49:58Speaker 02

Or TV and movies where you kind of don't do something twice.

• 50:00Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 50:01Speaker 02

Especially if you find something funny, you better hope you didn't find it in rehearsal because it's really hard to do that thing again.

• 50:07Dax Shepard?

I think we're scarred by the training we have, which is I'm allergic to the second time, which is a terrible quality.

• 50:14Speaker 02

I'm fucking allergic to it. That's exactly how I feel.

• 50:17Dax Shepard?

Even if I improv once and it's great and they wanna get another camera, I'm like, well, I don't want it anymore.

• 50:23Speaker 02

I know, I know, I know. It feels so false. And I'm working with three actors who have done a lot of theater, TV too, mostly TV. But they've done more theater lately. They were more ready for this than I was. And I remember doing. Something in a rehearsal that made the producers and director laugh. And then we were gonna do it again and I got a note that they loved that. And I was like, is it cool with you guys if I don't do that again until opening night? And they said, no. Yeah, they wanna see it. Yeah, you have to. We have to know. And timing. So that was a really fun experiment that I ended up loving. I wanna get back there.

• 50:55Dax Shepard?

Okay, and then the other thing, this one confuses me because this is, again, this is around the time that Sabrina put out Short and Sweet. Yet it's still not on TV, but you and Forte did a show in Australia.

• 51:05Speaker 02

  Yes, we did.

• 51:06Dax Shepard?

Where is that and what's going on?

• 51:08Speaker 02

ID? So ID, it's on SheTV ID.

• 51:11Dax Shepard?

  It's on SheTV ID.

• 51:13Speaker 02

  This is called Sunny Nights.

• 51:14Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 51:15Speaker 02

It's directed by the great Trent O'Donnell, who did some good plays, Kristen knows him.

• 51:20Dax Shepard?

Also maybe did Colin from Accounts?

• 51:21Speaker 02

  Yes, he sure did.

• 51:22Dax Shepard?

Greatest show that people have not seen?

• 51:24Speaker 02

  And you gotta watch it.

• 51:25Dax Shepard?

  You must watch it.

• 51:26Speaker 02

Do people ever look down the barrel on this show? You gotta watch Colin from Accounts.

• 51:30Dax Shepard?

Hey, watch it or watch out.

• 51:32Speaker 02

Exactly. Will and I play siblings. We shot it not this past summer, but the summer before.

• 51:40Dax Shepard?

  Short and Sweet debut.

• 51:41Speaker 02

  Yes, it's same exact timing.

• 51:43Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 51:43Speaker 02

So this actually will really work well for you. It comes out in Australia in December, next month. Or this month. Great, yeah. So it's coming out on Stan TV in Australia, and I know there's a lot of armchairs in Australia.

• 51:54Dax Shepard?

  There are.

• 51:55Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's great.

• 51:56Dax Shepard?

You know why? There's good people down in Australia.

• 51:58Speaker 02

Good people down in Australia, for sure. It premieres on Boxing Day, and that is December 26.

• 52:06Speaker 02

And then it will be streaming in America at some point soon, and I can't wait to tell you about that. Yay!

• 52:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I can't imagine a more explosive duo than you and Forte. This is a dream.

• 52:16Speaker 02

  Dream.

• 52:16Dax Shepard?

Okay, one other question I wanted to explore before we do loot is...

• 52:21Speaker 02

  Anything on Earth?

• 52:22Dax Shepard?

Because when you were here last time, you had filmed a couple, but you didn't have your full arc yet on Barry. You start being on Barry in 2018. We interviewed you in 2018.

• 52:32Speaker 02

Okay, here's the weird thing, and you guys know this, being in this biz. I auditioned for Barry the week after I auditioned for The Good Place. Whoa.

• 52:39Dax Shepard?

  There you go.

• 52:40Speaker 02

Or the week of, or whatever. It was that pilot season, which we used to have.

• 52:43Dax Shepard?

And Good Place was 16 to 2020 to remind people, so...

• 52:46Speaker 02

We shot The Good Place one week, we shot Barry the next week. And then it didn't get picked up for a year. Oh, wow. And then I think it didn't come out for a year.

• 52:55Dax Shepard?

What I thought might be interesting is this is something that you two share.

• 52:58Speaker 02

  Yes, we do.

• 52:59Dax Shepard?

Which is a transition from nanny to scene partner.

• 53:02Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 53:03Dax Shepard?

Cause you were Hater's nanny for a long time.

• 53:06Speaker 02

  Long time.

• 53:07Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So what was that transition like? And did it have any growing pains?

• 53:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:11Dax Shepard?

Did you have internal things that were fucking with you?

• 53:13Speaker 02

Yeah. Bill and Maggie Carey, who he was married to at the time, I nannied for them for years and years and years. And Bill was on SNL and Maggie was making comedy movies and TV. And I was just sort of like chugging away at UCB. Yep. It was, it's funny. I was about to say it was tricky. And then I'm like, no, it wasn't tricky. And the reason it wasn't is because I didn't ever bring it up. If they didn't know I was doing UCB, they wouldn't have known. And Bill, we did a show together, one random ASCAT, which is UCB's, what did we call it? Like our flagship show. It would be a bunch of improvisers and then probably a celebrity guest that would come do monologues. That was like the first time we had sort of gotten to work together in that way. And it was really positive.

• 53:54Dax Shepard?

But were you nervous going into it? Like, uh, he knows me as this? Or were you like, wait till he sees this skillset?

• 53:59Speaker 02

I think, I hate to say that it was a little bit of both. Yeah.

• 54:02Dax Shepard?

  Well, good.

• 54:02Speaker 02

I know. It was a little bit of like, this is my world.

• 54:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 54:05Speaker 02

And I feel good in this world and I know what I'm doing. And not to say that you don't have good shows, bad shows, but I was, I think, more excited.

• 54:12Dax Shepard?

Well, when you're nannying, you are quite literally in their world.

• 54:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:16Dax Shepard?

So if he enters your world, that's fun.

• 54:17Speaker 02

And it was really fun. They were so good to me. I loved them so much. We're still really in each other's lives. I went to their daughter's 16th birthday the other day and. Isn't that tough? Isn't that wild? I know, I know. I mean, I was nannying for them up until like a few months before The Good Place.

• 54:33Dax Shepard?

What if you said a few months ago?

• 54:34Speaker 02

I'd tell you. Well, I would though. I know, I know. When the audition for Barry came along, tell me if this resonates, I almost called Bill and said, let's just not. No, no, no. You don't have to do this. This is so nice, but no, no, no, no, no. Let's not. Don't do me the favor. Don't do me the favor. It's gonna be so awkward when I see you next time and I didn't get it. Let's just not even worry about it.

• 54:55Dax Shepard?

  You didn't do that.

• 54:55Speaker 02

I didn't do that, but I really thought about it. And I almost was like, should I? I don't know what the right answer was, but I did the audition just because it was such a good script. And it was so fun and he was so wonderful about it. He texted me that day, like, you got it.

• 55:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 55:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:10Speaker 01

  Was he in the audition?

• 55:11Speaker 02

No, but he watched it afterwards.

• 55:13Speaker 01

Okay, so that's helpful. I feel like when he's in the audition, I mean, I auditioned in front of Dax for commercials.

• 55:18Speaker 02

Okay, and a bunch of other people?

• 55:19Dax Shepard?

I was hoping you would tell a different story, which is I just offered you a role. I didn't make you audition.

• 55:23Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 55:24Speaker 01

No, that's a separate, I'm talking, this is like years ago.

• 55:27Dax Shepard?

That was the first time for Chips.

• 55:28Speaker 01

Yeah, but it is weird. And also, we were just already such good friends.

• 55:33Speaker 02

And it'd be different if you came up together in the same acting class or something like that.

• 55:36Dax Shepard?

But I think that's more stressful because I was directing.

• 55:37Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 55:38Speaker 01

Yeah, you were directing it and you were there when I walked into the audition. And it's like, this is so strange. But weirdly, I was like, I've done like 40 commercials. I feel fine about this.

• 55:50Speaker 02

  Right.

• 55:50Speaker 01

And it was a little bit like, I'm fine doing this.

• 55:54Dax Shepard?

  It was almost beneath you.

• 55:55Speaker 01

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 55:56Dax Shepard?

The actual spark was like an industrial buyout he wants. So it was actually below you.

• 56:01Speaker 02

And was that your first time auditioning for Dax?

• 56:03Dax Shepard?

Well, I had already just hired her for Chips. She had an actual role.

• 56:07Speaker 01

  That was horrible.

• 56:08Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 56:09Speaker 01

Because then I didn't even know.

• 56:11Speaker 02

  Right.

• 56:11Speaker 01

I was so excited. I was so flattered. This is before I was nannying. I was just babysitting.

• 56:16Speaker 02

  Okay, okay, okay.

• 56:17Speaker 01

I knew he was working on Chips and he said, I wrote you a role.

• 56:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:21Speaker 01

And I was like, huh? What?

• 56:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:24Speaker 01

I mean, you know, you know what it's like to be auditioning and not getting anything? And someone wrote you a role for their movie? I was shocked and I was so excited and so happy. And then I was like, oh, no.

• 56:35Speaker 02

  I know, I know, I know.

• 56:36Dax Shepard?

  Oh, no.

• 56:37Speaker 01

I can only let him down.

• 56:38Speaker 02

Totally. This is like something that I think I really appreciate that Bill did, which is after the fact, he said they almost named the character Darcy. I don't think it could have been an offer because I had done hardly anything at that point, but the pressure. So anyway, I didn't know that until later. But going in a little bit, not blind, but he's not in the room.

• 56:57Speaker 01

He's so related. He's not making the decision.

• 56:59Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:00Speaker 01

I think feeling like someone's doing you a favor is complicated.

• 57:03Speaker 02

  Yeah, it is complicated.

• 57:04Speaker 01

Because it's so nice. I mean, it's the nicest thing that can happen in this business and. Then you feel like, oh my God, they put themselves out there and I don't know how to act.

• 57:15Speaker 02

  Right.

• 57:15Dax Shepard?

  I no longer.

• 57:16Speaker 01

You don't know how to do anything.

• 57:18Dax Shepard?

  Forgot last week.

• 57:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's how it feels.

• 57:21Speaker 02

I totally agree. It's so funny. I read something years ago that Allison Janney insists on, I don't know if she still does, but insists on auditioning. Even with an offer. She's like, let's work together first.

• 57:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:30Speaker 01

  Make sure.

• 57:31Speaker 02

Yeah. Bill never, ever for one second made me feel like it was anything but earned, you know? He just was really good, really, really good to me.

• 57:39Dax Shepard?

Now, did you though transfer effortlessly into peer?

• 57:43Speaker 02

  No.

• 57:43Dax Shepard?

Do you still feel this original dynamic?

• 57:46Speaker 02

We have such a long history of me being his nanny. I don't know if that'll ever fully go away. It's been 16 years now that I've known him.

• 57:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:53Speaker 02

And that we've been so close. So we have totally moved into real friendship, almost like in a family way. But there is always this sort of thing of, I don't mean to say like boss, it's not even that. It's just, I'll never let go of the fact that I was nanny for so long. I can easily access it. I could easily sort of tip into like assistant feeling, you know what I mean? Like, let me get that for you or whatever, which he would never want.

• 58:17Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 58:18Speaker 02

But that's just sort of the foundation.

• 58:20Speaker 01

So interesting. I don't have that.

• 58:22Speaker 02

  Yeah, good, good, good.

• 58:23Speaker 01

But only because we work together every day still. I think if we had not, like if we worked together and then I didn't see you, I think that would be easier for me to slip back into that. I think I have more of that with Kristen.

• 58:37Speaker 02

  Oh, funny.

• 58:38Speaker 01

Where like, I do sometimes feel like, oh, I'll just take care of that for her. I know how to do that. But since we continue to work together and build this thing, it's harder for me to slip into like, oh yeah, when I was afraid of the sponge, because I heard you hated the sponge. Like, that's like so.

• 58:56Dax Shepard?

  Wet sponge.

• 58:57Speaker 01

  Wet sponge in the sink.

• 58:58Dax Shepard?

Just squeeze it before you put it back. Then you don't have to throw it away every three days because it smells like mold.

• 59:02Speaker 02

I love the sponge in the sink.

• 59:03Speaker 01

Funny because I remember Carly saying, when I was like training, she was like.

• 59:07Speaker 02

  Just so you know.

• 59:08Speaker 01

Hates, okay, when the sponge is left in the sink. So just make sure.

• 59:13Dax Shepard?

As if I've hit people in the house or yelled at people.

• 59:15Speaker 01

But that's her job to teach, like, don't do that. That's a house rule. And I just remember being like, the sponge. I was so aware of it. And now thinking about that girl and that guy.

• 59:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:26Speaker 01

  It's so funny to me.

• 59:29Dax Shepard?

It's so normal that it almost hurts my feelings. And once in a long while, it'll happen. It's fun to watch when it happens. It happened when you watched without a paddle. Like, she watched without a paddle this year in preparation of us doing a 20 year anniversary show with Seth and Matt, and she had never seen it.

• 59:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:44Dax Shepard?

And so she watched it and then she came in and her reaction was just really funny and genuine. She was like, I forgot you're really funny. Like, I forgot you're a comedic actor that I saw who I thought was funny.

• 59:56Speaker 02

Right. You're so used to your partner.

• 59:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:00:01Dax Shepard?

The person who can't remember the name of his favorite song. And that's what you have to deal with. Don't smile.

• 1:00:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00:07Speaker 02

  We're getting there.

• 1:00:10Speaker 01

I think it's good. You wouldn't like it if they came in every day thinking you were such hot shit.

• 1:00:15Dax Shepard?

But I did like when you thought I was talented for a day. I was like, oh, that feels really nice.

• 1:00:19Speaker 02

That is so married couple, you guys.

• 1:00:21Dax Shepard?

You can't see each other as humans.

• 1:00:23Speaker 02

  That's so great.

• 1:00:24Dax Shepard?

I'm just like her dad. You don't give a fuck about your parents. You're just like, yeah, whatever. They don't have feelings.

• 1:00:28Speaker 01

Yeah, but every now and then you go to their work event and you're like, oh, people respect him. Oh, my God. Good job, daddy.

• 1:00:37Speaker 02

This is online. You can feel it.

• 1:00:41Dax Shepard?

  Okay, loot.

• 1:00:42Speaker 02

Wait, real quick, we have to touch on Handmaid's Tale for just five seconds. I see was in Handmaid's Tale.

• 1:00:47Dax Shepard?

That was another one. She is such a fucking monster of an actor.

• 1:00:52Speaker 02

  Unbelievable.

• 1:00:53Dax Shepard?

Do you have scenes with her?

• 1:00:54Speaker 02

  We had scenes together.

• 1:00:55Dax Shepard?

Did she fuck you up? Yeah, you did four episodes or something.

• 1:00:58Speaker 02

I think I did four episodes, maybe three. Wait, did she fuck me up as an actor?

• 1:01:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:02Dax Shepard?

Yeah. She's like maybe the best.

• 1:01:05Speaker 02

And I thought that before I met her and then getting to see her do it.

• 1:01:09Dax Shepard?

She's so fucking goofy in real life. That to me is even more of a testament to an amazing actor. She's like, that's not her at all.

• 1:01:14Speaker 02

And she's that goofy, the. Second, the Yell Cut.

• 1:01:18Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:01:20Speaker 02

Have you had Bradley Whitford on?

• 1:01:22Speaker 01

  Yes, a long time ago.

• 1:01:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I love him.

• 1:01:23Speaker 02

I love to hear him talk about her because they've worked together since the West Wing days.

• 1:01:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:27Speaker 02

  And he's like, she's a machine. She's like a different beast.

• 1:01:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:01:32Speaker 02

  She is really incredible.

• 1:01:33Dax Shepard?

  The rest of us can't.

• 1:01:34Speaker 02

And then she directed the last two episodes and she's such a good director. Anne Dowd, who plays Aunt Lydia.

• 1:01:40Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yes, yes.

• 1:01:41Speaker 02

Getting to do a lot of scenes with her.

• 1:01:44Dax Shepard?

I don't know if I've ever got to go to be on a show that I was an enormous fan. Well, it's happening this year, actually. I'm doing something that I love the first season.

• 1:01:51Speaker 02

  I know. I'm so excited.

• 1:01:53Dax Shepard?

So that's so fun to get to have Aunt Lydia talk to you in that bitchy.

• 1:01:57Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:01:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:58Speaker 02

Yes. Oh, my God. Literally, we text each other this a lot. I'm saying something to her in the show where I'm like trying to distract her and I'm lying to her. But I say something about I needed to clean something up with a mop. And the way she responds is, a mop? Like, in a very Aunt Lydia way?

• 1:02:13Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:02:14Speaker 02

To have Anne Dowd as Aunt Lydia look you up and down.

• 1:02:17Dax Shepard?

  Terry in half.

• 1:02:18Speaker 02

  It feels really good.

• 1:02:19Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:02:20Speaker 02

And she's also the sweetest, sweetest, most wonderful, darling woman.

• 1:02:25Speaker 01

I commend the casting, though, because they cast Darcy and Tim.

• 1:02:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:29Speaker 01

Regarded so highly comedically that they brought him for the end of the most intense show that's been on TV in the past decade, probably.

• 1:02:36Speaker 02

That whole group, the showrunners, everybody, the writers, they all were very confident. I didn't feel like, prove to us that you can do this. They really made me feel good, you know?

• 1:02:45Speaker 01

  Amazing.

• 1:02:46Speaker 02

But it was really special. I can't believe I got to do that. And plus, I got to shoot some guys in the face.

• 1:02:49Dax Shepard?

  You did?

• 1:02:50Speaker 01

  Uh-huh.

• 1:02:51Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:52Speaker 02

  So fun.

• 1:02:53Dax Shepard?

  Okay, Loot.

• 1:02:54Speaker 02

  Lootatootoot.

• 1:02:54Dax Shepard?

I watched the first episode you're in, which is already out. Oh, my God, what a delight. You're so fucking funny.

• 1:03:00Speaker 02

  Thanks, Dax.

• 1:03:01Dax Shepard?

You come in as a vaguely Italian.

• 1:03:03Speaker 01

  Oh, ambiguous, yet again.

• 1:03:05Speaker 02

  But hardcore.

• 1:03:06Dax Shepard?

What's your first line to her?

• 1:03:08Speaker 02

  Bueno sera.

• 1:03:10Dax Shepard?

  And that's your name?

• 1:03:11Speaker 02

My name is Luciana, but I don't think bueno sera is like correct. Yeah. Italian. I think it's a little Spanish and that was sort of the point. There's a lot of bad Italian. Oh, I love this.

• 1:03:22Dax Shepard?

  You're super fake Italian.

• 1:03:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:25Dax Shepard?

And then, though, it already aired, so I'm gonna say.

• 1:03:28Speaker 02

I play Adam Scott's girlfriend and Adam is Maya's ex-husband. He's like a billionaire. Okay.

• 1:03:33Dax Shepard?

And she got eighty seven billion dollars from the divorce.

• 1:03:36Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:03:36Dax Shepard?

Maya, and she's trying to give it away.

• 1:03:38Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:03:38Dax Shepard?

  It's not going well.

• 1:03:39Speaker 02

And he's not. He's just living the billionaire life and he has this new Italian girlfriend who's like really changing his life.

• 1:03:45Dax Shepard?

And Maya's still very hurt by him.

• 1:03:47Speaker 02

Yeah, there's some real feelings there. At the end of the episode, you find out that I'm not really Luciana from Italy. I'm Ashley Kate. Ashley Kate? Ashley Kate from, I want to say Delaware.

• 1:04:00Dax Shepard?

  Your accent is so bizarre.

• 1:04:01Speaker 02

  Baltimore, Delaware.

• 1:04:02Dax Shepard?

  Were you coached through that?

• 1:04:04Speaker 02

  I was coached.

• 1:04:04Dax Shepard?

Is that easy for you? That's so hard for me.

• 1:04:06Speaker 02

This is the funny thing. I love accents. Italian, I don't have.

• 1:04:11Dax Shepard?

Well, you did in the show.

• 1:04:12Speaker 02

  Well, I worked really hard.

• 1:04:13Dax Shepard?

  Okay, you nailed that.

• 1:04:14Speaker 02

I'm really leaning into the, it's bad. It's okay that it's bad. It's part of the character.

• 1:04:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:18Speaker 02

And then this sort of like Baltimore Delaware accent I don't have and I worked my buns off.

• 1:04:25Dax Shepard?

Do you watch videos on YouTube?

• 1:04:26Speaker 02

I watch videos on YouTube for the Italian. So my best friend, Brandon Scott Jones, he was on The Good Place and now he's on that show Ghosts on CBS. He's great. Amazing. Anyway, he's from Baltimore. My best friend. Baltimore. He's from, I'm getting him mixed up. Don't smile. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. He's from Baltimore. So he always, our whole friendship has fallen into this great accent that I love so much that I make him do like a party trick. But I don't have it and I always remark on how hard it is. And then Sudhi Green, who's an amazing hilarious comedian and actor, who writes on loot and used to write on SNL, she's from Delaware. I might be wrong about that too, but in that area. So both of them would leave voice memos saying every line.

• 1:05:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh, great.

• 1:05:07Speaker 02

Every line like I was learning a new language and then I just tried to match it. I love that. It was really hard and I feel like I got it.

• 1:05:13Dax Shepard?

It's excellent. It's so funny and it's so weird. And you're right. That pocket, also, I was watching Task and they're nailing this Pennsylvania accent.

• 1:05:21Speaker 02

  It's so hard.

• 1:05:22Dax Shepard?

It's just really random words, right?

• 1:05:25Speaker 02

I would almost like write a new alphabet, things that made sense to me, almost like it was music or something, but it's not in me.

• 1:05:31Dax Shepard?

Well, you're hysterical. And then I love Adam so much. I don't know that anyone plays Dushy as good as him.

• 1:05:37Speaker 02

He's so good at it. And it's fun, you know, after inhaling two seasons of Severance now, it's nice to see him. I mean, I love him in Severance.

• 1:05:44Dax Shepard?

  Oh, he's so good.

• 1:05:45Speaker 02

Literally one of the best performances. Incredible, incredible.

• 1:05:47Dax Shepard?

  He's another monster.

• 1:05:49Speaker 02

Blown away by him, but it's so fun to see him kind of go back to douchebag.

• 1:05:52Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:05:53Speaker 02

And this is such a particular kind of douchebag on this show.

• 1:05:55Dax Shepard?

Her character, who he's in love with, has given him a makeover. He had his nostrils permanently flared.

• 1:06:01Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:06:02Dax Shepard?

And he has jeans with a ton of zippers on them.

• 1:06:04Speaker 02

So many zippers, too many zippers. Getting to work with Adam for a little bit in The Good Place was so fun. And then getting to do this with him, getting to work with Maya Rudolph in this way, you guys.

• 1:06:17Dax Shepard?

Was she not in any good place?

• 1:06:18Speaker 02

She was in Good Place and she was so great in Good Place. And we got tons of amazing stuff to get to do together. We got to dance together. We had so much fun. We had too much fun. I mean, couldn't get through a scene. And then to get to play with her on Loot in this way, where I almost can't explain how much of a dream it is. When she was on SNL and I was in college, that is a written out dream in my diary.

• 1:06:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:06:41Speaker 02

There was something about Maya, when I first watched Maya on SNL, I don't even know how to explain this. It's like I saw my family. I connected to her so hard that she made me feel like I belonged or like I was not as weird as I thought I was. I just connected to her in a way that I had never connected to.

• 1:06:59Dax Shepard?

She has that level of playfulness.

• 1:07:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:01Dax Shepard?

  That is pretty unparalleled.

• 1:07:03Speaker 02

Speaking of nannying and Bill and everything, there was one of these kids' birthday parties where she was there. And this is years ago, years and years and years ago. I love her so much that I left.

• 1:07:14Speaker 01

Yeah, I can relate to that.

• 1:07:16Speaker 02

I couldn't meet her. And I felt this way when she was put on The Good Place where I was like, I don't want this. I don't want my favorite. She's my favorite. I can't meet her. I can't work with her.

• 1:07:25Dax Shepard?

  I'm not ready.

• 1:07:26Speaker 02

Yeah. She couldn't have been better. She blew my expectations of her as a person. I just feel so. Fucking lucky that I got to do this with her. We'd really tell each other that a lot, which is nice. It's not just like, oh, this is a fun day at work. We kind of like hold each other.

• 1:07:41Speaker 02

Stare into each other's eyes. She sometimes will call me her weird sister. Like, you're my weird sister in a way that I'm like, if you told an 18 year old Darcy that. I know. Do you think you're living in a sim? It does feel, that's what I mean. Maybe more than anything, I'm like, this one, this is like, I wrote this down. Yeah. Yeah, I get to be in three episodes. I don't know if I'm allowed to say that, but there I go. Who cares? And that's just a good day. Those were good days where I'm like, my life is good. I am happy, I'm laughing, I'm fulfilled, I'm around amazing, creative, hilarious people. I just felt really lucky. Something just really hit me on that show. That's beautiful.

• 1:08:16Dax Shepard?

Okay, well, so everything's going perfect. And it's gonna be a great next year, so you don't need to worry at all.

• 1:08:21Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:08:21Dax Shepard?

But we need to be ahead of schedule. And you and Belle need to chat once a month about what you're gonna do again. It seems insane that you guys aren't plotting what you would come back together on at some point.

• 1:08:36Speaker 02

We do plot it, but we're bad at following up on it.

• 1:08:38Dax Shepard?

You might need a non ADHD person involved.

• 1:08:41Speaker 02

It's like your time blindness. Wait, it's actually funny. If we went through our text messages, it would be like, read the script. And then it would be like, months later being like, I read it. Did we talk about it yet? So much of that. You gotta get an alarm set, like the time. Yes.

• 1:08:53Dax Shepard?

  You need to invite.

• 1:08:54Speaker 02

Oh, my God, you're actually right.

• 1:08:55Dax Shepard?

Someone with a different neurodivergent skillset that will level out.

• 1:08:59Speaker 02

  I love her so much.

• 1:09:01Dax Shepard?

Yeah, she's very lovable. Well, I love you, Darcy.

• 1:09:03Speaker 02

  I love you too.

• 1:09:04Dax Shepard?

Everybody watch you on Loot. Everybody keep your eyes peeled for Sunday nights and the Five Star Weekend. And does your ID TV have a title?

• 1:09:11Speaker 02

  It doesn't have one yet.

• 1:09:12Dax Shepard?

Okay. She Show on She Network.

• 1:09:14Speaker 02

  She Show.

• 1:09:14Dax Shepard?

  On She TV.

• 1:09:15Speaker 02

Thank you for having me. I love sitting with you guys. I love you, I love talking to you. Thank you for having me, I'm so proud of you.

• 1:09:19Dax Shepard?

  Okay, come back.

We are supported by HP. My mental to do list is already full. Fix something around the house, refill prescriptions, remember to text someone back, keep track of a million little life things. The last thing I want on that list is, oh, don't forget printer ink.

• 1:09:45Speaker 01

  No, it's horrible.

• 1:09:46Dax Shepard?

It's the bane of everyone's existence. What if you could just take that off your list for years?

• 1:09:52Speaker 01

  The dream.

• 1:09:52Dax Shepard?

That's the idea behind the HP Smart Tank printer from America's most trusted printer brand. He's an arm care expert, but he makes mistakes all the time. Thank God Monica's here. She's gonna let him have the facts.

• 1:11:50Dax Shepard?

This is a dangerous food item to eat right before we record.

• 1:11:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's sticky.

• 1:11:54Dax Shepard?

Cause look what could happen. Hey Monica.

• 1:11:58Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:11:59Dax Shepard?

  What's on this side?

• 1:12:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, that looks.

• 1:12:03Dax Shepard?

  Like hillbillyish.

• 1:12:04Speaker 01

Yeah, you do. But it kind of matches your shirt.

• 1:12:07Dax Shepard?

  My whole vibe.

• 1:12:08Speaker 01

And your whole vibe. None of this seems on brand.

• 1:12:12Dax Shepard?

I think I could pull off a missing tooth up front.

• 1:12:15Speaker 01

Well, you have. Oh, no, you don't. You just had a gold one.

• 1:12:19Dax Shepard?

You remember, the only thing I have bulletproof is my teeth.

• 1:12:22Speaker 01

I know. So wild that you're so obsessed with your teeth. You're not obsessed. You're careful with your teeth. They're scared of them falling out. And yet you shaved one of them down a little bit. And I'm just surprised you did that.

• 1:12:36Dax Shepard?

  I was surprised.

• 1:12:37Speaker 01

  Swept away.

• 1:12:38Dax Shepard?

I did. I should have like, I should have brought an advocate with me.

• 1:12:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:42Dax Shepard?

Say, hold on, do we want this permanently?

• 1:12:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:12:46Dax Shepard?

But I didn't. And I'm also really good at, when I make my bed, I can lie in it peacefully.

• 1:12:50Speaker 01

I know. But are, but do you feel you got taken advantage of?

• 1:12:53Dax Shepard?

No, no, I don't. Not in this case.

• 1:12:56Speaker 01

  Okay, that's good.

• 1:12:57Dax Shepard?

Yeah, just lying in your bed if you've made it.

• 1:13:00Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:13:00Dax Shepard?

  Is that the same?

• 1:13:01Speaker 01

Yeah, if you make a bed and you lie in it.

• 1:13:04Dax Shepard?

This is one of my pet peeves.

• 1:13:05Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:13:06Dax Shepard?

And I know it's definitely childhood. I think it's how we were raised. Like, yeah, that's it. Just deal with it.

• 1:13:12Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:13:13Dax Shepard?

There's a lot of tolerance for whining about stuff.

• 1:13:16Speaker 01

  Mm hmm, mm hmm.

• 1:13:17Dax Shepard?

And I'm that way. And I like it. And when people are like, when they can't just.

• 1:13:24Speaker 01

  Accept?

• 1:13:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah, just get with the program and deal with whatever thing it is.

• 1:13:28Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:13:28Dax Shepard?

  I get a little judgy.

• 1:13:30Speaker 01

  Okay, well.

• 1:13:32Dax Shepard?

It's like I call it a pet peeve. I think you'd call it a pet peeve.

• 1:13:34Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:13:35Dax Shepard?

Like just deal with it. I want to, sometimes I just want to yell out loud. Just deal with it.

• 1:13:38Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's funny though.

• 1:13:42Speaker 01

I do think it's funny because we, I think we all feel that way, like just, just, this is just get over it.

• 1:13:49Dax Shepard?

Different things we have hard times dealing with.

• 1:13:52Speaker 01

  There are things that.

• 1:13:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you could say to me at the airport, like, yeah, TSA, they're always there, just deal with it.

• 1:13:58Speaker 01

It's fine. It is the way it is. Just do it.

• 1:14:01Dax Shepard?

  And I've learned to deal.

• 1:14:02Speaker 01

Sure. I'm just, you know, we all have our things.

• 1:14:05Dax Shepard?

This isn't a good one, but yeah, my food comes fucked up. Well, whatever. It's food.

• 1:14:09Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:14:10Dax Shepard?

You know, people are like, I asked for light mayonnaise and this is medium mayonnaise. I have, I'm like, oh boy, I wish I weren't at a table with you.

• 1:14:17Speaker 01

  Wow, you are being judgy.

• 1:14:20Dax Shepard?

I am, and I think it's because it comes from, I would have been very shamed if I acted that way, growing up.

• 1:14:26Speaker 01

  Oh, man.

• 1:14:28Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:28Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:14:29Dax Shepard?

But my kids demand satisfaction, you know, they grew up in a different household than me.

• 1:14:33Speaker 01

All right. Also, okay, light mayonnaise and medium mayonnaise is one thing, but what about if, if they give a chicken sandwich instead of a burger?

• 1:14:42Dax Shepard?

  Chicken's great. No.

• 1:14:44Speaker 01

  You're mad.

• 1:14:45Dax Shepard?

  Menu item.

• 1:14:46Speaker 01

  Yeah, you should.

• 1:14:47Dax Shepard?

I ordered lasagna. Well, you got clams.

• 1:14:49Speaker 01

Sometimes that happens and then you're allowed to be pissed.

• 1:14:54Dax Shepard?

I guess you're right. I guess all the lines in the sand are arbitrary.

• 1:14:57Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:58Dax Shepard?

But like, if I just, if I buy something and I get home and I'm like, yeah, that didn't turn out.

• 1:15:05Speaker 01

  You're not.

• 1:15:05Dax Shepard?

And it's like, that's your fault. Just deal with it. You should have been able to tell. If you let someone grind your tooth down, like just, that happened.

• 1:15:14Speaker 01

  It happened. That's true.

• 1:15:15Dax Shepard?

I'm not gonna cry over spilled milk.

• 1:15:18Speaker 01

We know I even once cried over spilled milk.

• 1:15:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah. But you think it's probably equal across, like, everyone just has their zones?

• 1:15:27Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:15:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I want there to be people that are more tolerant than I am.

• 1:15:31Speaker 01

  I know you do.

• 1:15:32Dax Shepard?

But you don't think that's the case?

• 1:15:33Speaker 01

No, there are. There are some people that are just like.

• 1:15:36Dax Shepard?

Thanks for the sustenance, no matter whatever.

• 1:15:38Speaker 01

They do not care about anything.

• 1:15:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:42Speaker 01

I put my dad almost in that category.

• 1:15:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I enjoy being around him, I think, for that reason. It's like, I ordered milk, good, it's a glass of sand.

• 1:15:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, he's like, that's fine.

• 1:15:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:53Speaker 01

Um, some people are like that. You are not, and either am I, and either is anyone we know, really. Um, besides my dad. So, you know, it's okay, we all have our things.

• 1:16:07Dax Shepard?

No, we should aspire to be a show, though, in the sitch.

• 1:16:10Speaker 01

I think it's okay to care about some things.

• 1:16:12Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:16:12Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it's all right. Um, you have family in town, and there's a little girl in the house.

• 1:16:21Dax Shepard?

Oh, there is a little girl.

• 1:16:22Speaker 01

And she's so cute, and you came down there, and she said, hi, Uncle Dax.

• 1:16:25Dax Shepard?

I know, and she's only met me like three times.

• 1:16:27Speaker 01

It's really cute that she calls you Uncle Dax.

• 1:16:29Dax Shepard?

I know, I don't really get called Uncle Dax.

• 1:16:31Speaker 01

It was the first time I've ever heard.

• 1:16:33Dax Shepard?

It might be the first time I've ever been called, like, no, certainly my brother's children.

• 1:16:37Speaker 01

  They call you Uncle Dax?

• 1:16:38Dax Shepard?

They did when they were little.

• 1:16:39Speaker 01

Oh, they did, okay, because I've never called my aunts.

• 1:16:44Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you haven't?

• 1:16:45Speaker 01

Uh-uh, I did call my Aunt Lily, my dad's sister, who passed away this year. Gee, I called her Aunt Lily. But everyone else was not, was called by their name, and I don't think they liked it, they thought it was disrespectful.

• 1:16:58Dax Shepard?

Well, I was gonna say, what's interesting, what a little I know about the Indian culture is it's all about aunties and uncles.

• 1:17:03Speaker 01

  It is.

• 1:17:04Dax Shepard?

And are they not saying auntie and uncle?

• 1:17:06Speaker 01

  They are.

• 1:17:07Dax Shepard?

They are, you just, you went rogue.

• 1:17:09Speaker 01

  Bother sister.

• 1:17:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:11Speaker 01

Um, yeah, actually, when I was there for the memorial, people were, they, people were calling me.

• 1:17:17Dax Shepard?

  Aunty?

• 1:17:17Speaker 01

  Some of them, yeah.

• 1:17:19Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 1:17:20Speaker 01

And then also, there's a, the language that my parents speak, well, they don't, but you know, where they come from is called.

• 1:17:28Dax Shepard?

  The language they could.

• 1:17:29Speaker 01

Yes, my dad speaks it, um, is called maliyalam, and the, the word for sister is chachi.

• 1:17:37Dax Shepard?

  Chachi?

• 1:17:38Speaker 01

So, my dad called, um, my Aunt Lily chachi, but normally, you would say, like.

• 1:17:46Speaker 01

Lily Chachi. And then if there's another sister, that Carly Chachi.

• 1:17:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:17:52Speaker 01

So, but he just had one sister, so he just called her Chachi.

• 1:17:56Dax Shepard?

He got to just say Chachi. There was only one.

• 1:17:57Speaker 01

But when I was there, a lot of people were calling me Monica Chachi.

• 1:18:01Dax Shepard?

And did you feel honored and respected?

• 1:18:03Speaker 01

I had to learn all about this because I was like, why are they calling me that? I'm not their sister, so I don't get it. But then it's not that literal.

• 1:18:11Dax Shepard?

No, it's much looser. They hold it with a loose grasp.

• 1:18:14Speaker 01

  Everyone's family.

• 1:18:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's nice.

• 1:18:17Speaker 01

  It is nice.

• 1:18:17Dax Shepard?

And in general, can like, you just like, I got the feeling from watching Hussin stand up, that he could just go up to any Indian woman and call her auntie. Like if she was older, like it would be a sign of respect.

• 1:18:28Speaker 01

Probably. Yeah, I think so, actually.

• 1:18:32Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:18:32Speaker 01

I mean, maybe, maybe they have to be kind of loosely related, but maybe not.

• 1:18:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I don't know. It seemed, I was trying to read between the lines. I was like, I think you can just roll auntie out as a term of respect, period.

• 1:18:44Speaker 01

It is very interesting being around that side of the family, which is rare because they are more involved in the Indian culture than my family is and my dad. But seeing my dad kind of does code switch when he's there, obviously.

• 1:19:01Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:19:01Speaker 01

Um, but even sometimes I'll catch him, I'm like, he's rogue.

• 1:19:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:07Speaker 01

Like he's, he's the one, he did something different.

• 1:19:10Dax Shepard?

He's an anarchist. He's punk rock. I should ask him about shaving his sides. He might be up for it.

• 1:19:15Speaker 01

I'd rather not. His hair's already.

• 1:19:17Dax Shepard?

I'd like to give him a haircut next time he's around.

• 1:19:19Speaker 01

  Oh, but his hair's.

• 1:19:21Dax Shepard?

Do you think he'd feel homophobic about me touching his hair generally?

• 1:19:23Speaker 01

  No, he doesn't.

• 1:19:25Dax Shepard?

He doesn't have any feelings of homophobic?

• 1:19:26Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:19:27Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:19:28Speaker 01

  Again, he doesn't have.

• 1:19:30Dax Shepard?

If a random man started caressing his neck, he would have.

• 1:19:33Speaker 01

Okay, I think he'd be like, he'd probably just be like, what is that person doing? No, I think he'd be like, what is that person doing? But he wouldn't think it was homophobic.

• 1:19:42Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:19:43Speaker 01

He doesn't care about stuff. I don't know how many times I can say it.

• 1:19:47Dax Shepard?

But if he is being hit on by a man, would he notice?

• 1:19:49Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:19:50Dax Shepard?

He wouldn't notice. Even if it was shirts off and they were kissing.

• 1:19:54Speaker 01

Well, don't make my dad, don't do that to my dad. He's in India right now.

• 1:20:00Dax Shepard?

He is. So I had to, um, I had to reach out to a friend today, a friend of a friend.

• 1:20:07Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:20:08Dax Shepard?

Cause I needed help with some publicity.

• 1:20:10Speaker 01

  Oh, okay.

• 1:20:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I have, I'm going on Kimmel tonight.

• 1:20:13Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:20:13Dax Shepard?

And I aim to show a clip of Hit and Run.

• 1:20:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:20:16Dax Shepard?

Which is proving harder to do than one would think.

• 1:20:19Speaker 01

  Huh.

• 1:20:19Dax Shepard?

Oh, everyone's going rights, rights. Like who, Open Road owned it. They sold, it's like, the company that owned the movie's been sold 20 times.

• 1:20:26Speaker 01

Right. Don't you own the rights?

• 1:20:29Dax Shepard?

  I wish.

• 1:20:30Speaker 01

  That's crazy.

• 1:20:31Dax Shepard?

No. Um, so I had to call my friend Callie over at Netflix. I sent her a text. I was like, hey, sorry to bother you with this. You work in marketing at Netflix. Like I'm trying to get Netflix to send a clip over of this movie and you guys have it currently licensed. Can you?

• 1:20:49Speaker 01

  Did she?

• 1:20:49Dax Shepard?

So she's on it. She's working on it.

• 1:20:51Speaker 01

Oh, my God. My sweet Callie.

• 1:20:55Dax Shepard?

  That might make you giggle.

• 1:20:57Speaker 01

Yeah. God, she, she created Train Dreams and she's getting.

• 1:21:03Dax Shepard?

  Wrote and directed Train Dreams.

• 1:21:05Speaker 01

She's getting you out of this pickle. She's busy.

• 1:21:07Dax Shepard?

We'll see. She's working on it.

• 1:21:09Speaker 01

Yeah. She's also not in publicity. She's in marketing. Very different divisions.

• 1:21:13Dax Shepard?

She said, this isn't really my thing, but I can call some people.

• 1:21:16Speaker 01

Yeah. She's gonna pull some strings.

• 1:21:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, hopefully.

• 1:21:18Speaker 01

  Callie's coming over tonight.

• 1:21:20Dax Shepard?

  Oh, she is?

• 1:21:20Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:21:21Dax Shepard?

  What timing?

• 1:21:22Speaker 01

Exactly. Because today is Mon's giving.

• 1:21:26Dax Shepard?

  It's Tuesday?

• 1:21:28Speaker 01

It's normally Monday. I had to push it because we had to add some recordings yesterday.

• 1:21:32Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we had a bonkers day yesterday.

• 1:21:34Speaker 01

  Yeah. So it's today. Okay.

• 1:21:36Dax Shepard?

Okay. Is that why you wanted to go early?

• 1:21:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:21:39Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:21:39Speaker 01

Cause I have to get this turkey in the oven at one at the latest.

• 1:21:45Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:21:46Speaker 01

And I, I still have to cut up some shells.

• 1:21:48Dax Shepard?

You're not gonna go throw it in?

• 1:21:50Speaker 01

  Maybe.

• 1:21:51Dax Shepard?

  Send her in the razor.

• 1:21:52Speaker 01

She has to cut some shallots.

• 1:21:54Dax Shepard?

  She's a good cutter.

• 1:21:56Speaker 01

  And put some thyme in. T H Y M E.

• 1:21:59Dax Shepard?

  Right. And thyme.

• 1:22:00Speaker 01

And it does take some time. Yeah.

• 1:22:02Dax Shepard?

  I am a C. I am a C H. I am a C H R I S T I A N. I have the L O R D in my H E A R T and I love them and I L O V E love them all the T I M E time.

• 1:22:13Speaker 01

  You know that.

• 1:22:14Dax Shepard?

Can you believe I know that song?

• 1:22:15Speaker 01

  How do you know that?

• 1:22:16Dax Shepard?

I don't know these songs. These songs get in there. I think I'm gonna learn it from the Hantsons.

• 1:22:21Speaker 01

They have heard them sing that, but I've never committing that to me. You don't even know any lyrics.

• 1:22:26Dax Shepard?

I can barely spell those words. The real hard part is spelling Christian.

• 1:22:29Speaker 01

Do you think now you should believe in God? Because that's shocking, actually.

• 1:22:33Dax Shepard?

God did intervene and allow me to spell his follower's name correctly.

• 1:22:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:22:37Dax Shepard?

You wanna hear it one more time?

• 1:22:38Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:22:38Dax Shepard?

  I am a C. I am a C H. I am a C H R I S T I A N. I have the L O R D in my H E A R T and I L O V E love them all the T I M E time.

• 1:22:49Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:22:51Dax Shepard?

That's a tongue twister. Can you try it?

• 1:22:52Speaker 01

  Okay, sure.

• 1:22:53Dax Shepard?

  I am a C.

• 1:22:54Speaker 01

  I am a C. I am a C H. I am a C H R I S T A I N.

• 1:23:00Dax Shepard?

  Is it A I N or I A N? I A N, okay, so you had a misspelling.

• 1:23:04Speaker 01

I don't have the Lord in my heart.

• 1:23:06Dax Shepard?

  That's one misspelling so far.

• 1:23:07Speaker 01

I thought that's how it was spelled.

• 1:23:08Dax Shepard?

That's why I'm saying it gets really hard.

• 1:23:10Speaker 01

  Okay, I am a C. I am a C H. I am a C H R I S T I A N. I have the L O R D in my H E A R T. And I.

• 1:23:20Dax Shepard?

  L O V E.

• 1:23:21Speaker 01

  L O V E.

• 1:23:22Dax Shepard?

  Love him all the.

• 1:23:23Speaker 01

  Him all the T I M E time.

• 1:23:26Dax Shepard?

Really good. You lost the rhythm a little bit there. You got off rhythm, but you did a really good job. Rob, you on try it? Uh, no thanks. Okay.

• 1:23:35Speaker 01

Okay, so Ma's giving us today, so I have this turkey. I have to make a stuffing. I'm making a potato.

• 1:23:41Dax Shepard?

This was the two of you? This is great.

• 1:23:42Speaker 01

  Me.

• 1:23:43Dax Shepard?

I know, but just for you and Callie?

• 1:23:45Speaker 01

  No, no, no, no.

• 1:23:46Dax Shepard?

Okay, this is getting sad a little bit.

• 1:23:48Speaker 01

  Hey!

• 1:23:50Dax Shepard?

There's a ton of food for two girls.

• 1:23:51Speaker 01

  That's all right.

• 1:23:52Dax Shepard?

I just imagine you two girls sitting down and be like, oh, we got a lot of work to do.

• 1:23:55Speaker 01

That's so fun. You know, her and I used to go to All Time and get the ribeye, the huge steak.

• 1:24:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, the ninety-six ounce.

• 1:24:03Speaker 01

And we'd eat it all. Now, no, so this is three years running.

• 1:24:08Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:24:09Speaker 01

And I would do it for the people who I don't normally do Thanksgiving with. So Anthony and Allison, Jess.

• 1:24:15Dax Shepard?

  Trent and Megan.

• 1:24:17Speaker 01

  I don't, Rachel, um, Anna.

• 1:24:21Dax Shepard?

  Anna, Jess.

• 1:24:23Speaker 01

  I, I said Jess.

• 1:24:24Dax Shepard?

  Jess.

• 1:24:25Speaker 01

And Callie and Max. So, okay. So it's six or seven people.

• 1:24:31Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:24:31Speaker 01

  Squash, gratin, stuffing.

• 1:24:33Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:24:34Speaker 01

  Green bean.

• 1:24:35Dax Shepard?

  So ambitious.

• 1:24:36Speaker 01

Half kind of green bean casserole, but it's not casserole. It's like fancy, um.

• 1:24:42Dax Shepard?

Now you're gonna bring all this rubbish to Molly's tomorrow?

• 1:24:46Speaker 01

I'm making, I am making the potatoes for our, our Thanksgiving.

• 1:24:51Dax Shepard?

  Okay, okay.

• 1:24:52Speaker 01

Um, I asked if she wanted me to make anything else because I have other stuff, but I'm not bringing the leftovers. That feels weird. I mean, I guess I could.

• 1:24:59Dax Shepard?

  Leftovers, yeah.

• 1:25:00Speaker 01

Well, Thanksgiving leftovers are notoriously amazing.

• 1:25:02Dax Shepard?

  Better.

• 1:25:03Speaker 01

Yeah, better. Um, turkey, a cloud potatoes. I made gravy already. I made cranberries already. I had to make the stock from scratch.

• 1:25:16Dax Shepard?

Whoa, this is crazy. Is there any other, there's no other holiday you celebrate three times?

• 1:25:22Speaker 01

  No, there's not.

• 1:25:23Dax Shepard?

Like you could have potentially gone three. You may still yet go three times.

• 1:25:27Speaker 01

  I'm gonna.

• 1:25:28Dax Shepard?

It's Tuesday, Wednesday, and you could bang, you could find one Thursday for sure.

• 1:25:31Speaker 01

Thursday, I'm doing a brunch, so, but I don't know what we're gonna do.

• 1:25:34Dax Shepard?

  Who?

• 1:25:35Speaker 01

  Callie.

• 1:25:36Dax Shepard?

  Again.

• 1:25:37Speaker 01

  Well.

• 1:25:37Dax Shepard?

  You guys are gonna be.

• 1:25:38Speaker 01

I'm gonna be so full. I know, I can't wait. Like a little turkey.

• 1:25:42Dax Shepard?

  Speaking of fat.

• 1:25:43Speaker 01

  Okay, go.

• 1:25:44Dax Shepard?

I've gained, well, now I'm back down a little bit, but I just blinked.

• 1:25:49Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:25:50Dax Shepard?

And I went from one ninety-six to two twelve by the time I got home from Texas. So I gained sixteen pounds in about nine, ten days.

• 1:26:00Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:26:01Dax Shepard?

I have that kind of body. Like, I do think I could blink and be 275.

• 1:26:06Speaker 01

We have to do race to 270 again?

• 1:26:08Dax Shepard?

16 pounds in 10 days is a lot.

• 1:26:11Speaker 01

That is a lot. What do you think's going on?

• 1:26:13Dax Shepard?

Now I've curved it back down. I'm back down to 207.

• 1:26:15Speaker 01

  Huh.

• 1:26:16Dax Shepard?

Um, I mean, I, it's as simple for me as I like, I forget to take my Metamucil for a day.

• 1:26:23Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:26:24Dax Shepard?

And then I had an early morning for something and I just did, one day I didn't poop.

• 1:26:29Speaker 01

  Just one day, though?

• 1:26:30Dax Shepard?

And then the next day, it's like, it's a joke of a poop. Like, is this a joke?

• 1:26:34Speaker 01

  So you're a little constipated.

• 1:26:35Dax Shepard?

I think I have like 10 plus pounds. And then I think that then creates a bunch of water.

• 1:26:41Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:26:42Dax Shepard?

  Bloat, bloat.

• 1:26:43Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:26:44Dax Shepard?

All I know is I got home from Texas on Saturday night and I hopped on the ski hill. I said, wow, we've almost gained 20 pounds in 10 days.

• 1:26:52Speaker 01

  Wow, that is fast.

• 1:26:55Dax Shepard?

I can pack it on and then I can really lose it pretty quick, too.

• 1:26:59Speaker 01

But you also were traveling, so you weren't working out?

• 1:27:02Dax Shepard?

I did not work out. But I also was like on a set for 12 hours, walking around and being kind of busy. So I bet calorically, I spent the same amount.

• 1:27:13Speaker 01

  Huh.

• 1:27:13Dax Shepard?

Very normal for me. I'll just do this.

• 1:27:15Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:27:16Dax Shepard?

One time I got in a cruise ship and seven days later, you recall, I got out, it was like 22 pounds heavier. I can just, I think I have a lot of real estate to spread it around.

• 1:27:24Speaker 01

  Well, you're very tall.

• 1:27:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:26Speaker 01

  And wide.

• 1:27:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:28Speaker 01

Well, you're not wide, are you?

• 1:27:30Dax Shepard?

  My shoulders are pretty wide.

• 1:27:31Speaker 01

  Your shoulders are wide.

• 1:27:32Dax Shepard?

They're bright, but they are pretty wide. Pretty thin. I mean, if you look at me from sideways?

• 1:27:38Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:27:39Dax Shepard?

  I just look normal.

• 1:27:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, you don't look thick.

• 1:27:40Dax Shepard?

  I'm not fat.

• 1:27:42Speaker 01

Unless you gained 15, 20 pounds.

• 1:27:44Dax Shepard?

We'll be thick by the end of this holiday.

• 1:27:46Speaker 01

You are, you know, you are thicker with your muscles. You don't look so, so thin anymore.

• 1:27:54Dax Shepard?

I mean, you talking like five years ago? Or are you talking last week?

• 1:27:58Speaker 01

No, I mean, like, your muscles are huge.

• 1:28:01Dax Shepard?

  You have huge muscles.

• 1:28:02Speaker 01

  You do. Everyone knows that.

• 1:28:06Dax Shepard?

  I know. That's, that's wicked.

• 1:28:08Speaker 01

So you, it's like my blank.

• 1:28:11Speaker 01

We all know about your muscles and my blam. In fact, nobody knows about my blamper's as we just learned.

• 1:28:17Dax Shepard?

One person didn't know about your blamper's and my hunch is he did know about.

• 1:28:20Speaker 01

  He didn't.

• 1:28:21Dax Shepard?

  He didn't.

• 1:28:22Speaker 01

No, I could tell he didn't know.

• 1:28:23Dax Shepard?

  He was not gonna look.

• 1:28:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:24Dax Shepard?

But the muscles is a whole interesting thing.

• 1:28:27Speaker 01

Mm hmm, mm hmm. Let's talk about it.

• 1:28:29Dax Shepard?

The muscles are just a result of the way I like to work out. I mean, in truth.

• 1:28:34Speaker 01

But you also, you want to be big. You've said that.

• 1:28:37Dax Shepard?

I wanted to be bigger and I got bigger.

• 1:28:39Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:28:40Dax Shepard?

There are moments where I go, you're starting to look stupid.

• 1:28:43Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:28:44Dax Shepard?

You know, like there's, you can look too, my, I even for me, you can look too.

• 1:28:47Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:28:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:28:49Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:28:50Dax Shepard?

Like, I don't want to look like a bodybuilder or a UFC fighter.

• 1:28:53Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:28:54Dax Shepard?

  Right?

• 1:28:54Speaker 01

  Yeah. I mean, I, yeah.

• 1:28:57Dax Shepard?

  You, you agree.

• 1:28:59Speaker 01

  Yeah, I agree.

• 1:29:00Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's just the result of what I like to do.

• 1:29:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:04Dax Shepard?

Like, I like to lift weights for an hour a day.

• 1:29:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:07Dax Shepard?

And ride my bike and I feel great.

• 1:29:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:11Dax Shepard?

  And I feel strong.

• 1:29:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:29:13Dax Shepard?

But I don't necessarily want to look big.

• 1:29:18Speaker 01

You, you could lower the weights, right?

• 1:29:21Dax Shepard?

No, because the whole point, I still have to exhaust myself. That's the goal.

• 1:29:25Speaker 01

  More reps, less weight?

• 1:29:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you can do more reps and less weight, but that's the, you get the same gains.

• 1:29:31Speaker 01

Like, when your kids are snuggling you.

• 1:29:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:34Speaker 01

Do they ever like hit their head on your muscle and say, ow?

• 1:29:37Dax Shepard?

No, never, never. They really, they still like my nook. They will comment that when they're laying on my chest, it's like they're on two pillows. Like, they're up kind of high.

• 1:29:47Speaker 01

  Oh, right, they're up.

• 1:29:47Dax Shepard?

  But they like it.

• 1:29:48Speaker 01

  But they still feel soft.

• 1:29:50Dax Shepard?

  They still, yeah, yeah.

• 1:29:51Speaker 01

  Okay, that's good.

• 1:29:52Dax Shepard?

  It's still inviting and soft.

• 1:29:53Speaker 01

Because sometimes when I hug people with big, and, and you're an extremely good hugger.

• 1:29:58Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:29:59Speaker 01

You're like known for your hugs.

• 1:30:00Dax Shepard?

  Sure, it's my calling card.

• 1:30:01Speaker 01

And. You know, you are at risk because sometimes people who are too muscular, I ha- I don't like hugging them. It's like, it's like hugging a-

• 1:30:13Dax Shepard?

  Redwood?

• 1:30:14Speaker 01

Yeah, it doesn't, it doesn't feel cozy.

• 1:30:16Dax Shepard?

It's not warm fuzzy. It's cold prickly.

• 1:30:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:19Dax Shepard?

Anyways, I'm aware of it, but I don't really, I'm also not gonna do anything other than what I do.

• 1:30:25Speaker 01

  Great.

• 1:30:25Dax Shepard?

But I just, for anyone who's like, does he realize he might look too big? I do.

• 1:30:29Speaker 01

I think you don't, but here's one thing I'll say about some people who are getting very, very, very big.

• 1:30:36Dax Shepard?

Okay, mayb- yeah, you're hitting it on the head, by the way. I see pictures of other guys and I'm like, I think I'm that big and I don't like how they look. That's what's really happening.

• 1:30:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:45Dax Shepard?

But a lot of it is they're much shorter.

• 1:30:47Speaker 01

  Yeah, yes.

• 1:30:48Dax Shepard?

I think if you're really bulldoggy, that's not a look for me.

• 1:30:50Speaker 01

Sure. But I, I, okay, yes, and what happens though is when you have to wear something high neck.

• 1:30:59Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:31:00Speaker 01

  Where it's buttoned up top.

• 1:31:02Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:31:03Speaker 01

It's still, it kinda gives that illusion of a shorter person because you're only see, you're not seeing down here.

• 1:31:11Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:31:12Speaker 01

And so you're just seeing the neck and the neck is thick. It's stockier.

• 1:31:16Dax Shepard?

  Okay, right.

• 1:31:17Speaker 01

And so then it looks like, oh my God, like-

• 1:31:20Dax Shepard?

  He must've gained sixteen.

• 1:31:22Speaker 01

They're so, they're so muscular, like their neck is huge.

• 1:31:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. I don't think I'm there, but I think, I know what you're, I know what you're saying.

• 1:31:30Speaker 01

  Yeah, I just noticed it.

• 1:31:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. When you put a tie, it can look like, oh, this does, none of this fits.

• 1:31:35Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's squeezing.

• 1:31:36Dax Shepard?

  Constricted.

• 1:31:37Speaker 01

  It's squeezing.

• 1:31:38Dax Shepard?

It makes, it's an uneasy feeling when you're viewing it.

• 1:31:42Speaker 04

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert, if you dare.

• 1:31:55Dax Shepard?

But then I love the tip, and then, and then I also love the other side where it's like I was on set and all these guys, they just can't come, they kept coming over and feeling my muscles. And I love, I love being touched by people I like.

• 1:32:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:07Dax Shepard?

Do you like physical, you like when you're talking to someone and you like the person?

• 1:32:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:12Dax Shepard?

You like when they touch your shoulder and touch you and stuff? I like that. I'm very physical.

• 1:32:17Speaker 01

It depends on who it is.

• 1:32:19Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:32:19Speaker 01

I don't think I'm carte blanche, but I, if I like you and know, feel close to you, then yeah.

• 1:32:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Um, we saw Wicked last night.

• 1:32:30Speaker 01

  Yeah, you saw Wicked.

• 1:32:31Dax Shepard?

In a huge group of people.

• 1:32:33Speaker 01

  Yes, I passed.

• 1:32:34Dax Shepard?

You passed. Are you gonna see it?

• 1:32:37Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 1:32:38Dax Shepard?

You're not sure yet. You saw the first one?

• 1:32:40Speaker 01

Uh huh. I saw the first one because we were interviewing Cynthia.

• 1:32:43Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:32:43Speaker 01

  So we.

• 1:32:44Dax Shepard?

  All went together.

• 1:32:45Speaker 01

  All went and, and yeah.

• 1:32:46Dax Shepard?

  Now remembering.

• 1:32:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Um, I liked it more than the first one. I really, really loved it. Yeah, but it was a chaotic day. It was a maximum chaos day.

• 1:32:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:33:00Dax Shepard?

We had a blood draw in the morning. 11 vials again. Then we went in 11 a.m. recording. We had a guest then. Uh, we had a one hour break. In that one hour break, I did the pre-interview for Kimmel. Then we came in here and then we had a, a very iconic guest. And, um, and then where the second we walked out, I walked in the house and there were 13 people in the house. And it was make sure everyone's eating this movie's long. Figure out how we get all these people to the theater, pulling cars out of the garage, moving things around. Total chaos.

• 1:33:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:33:34Dax Shepard?

Up to the moment of departure. Home Alone. Thought for sure we definitely were gonna leave someone at the house. And then went and, uh, had a delightful time.

• 1:33:43Speaker 01

  Great.

• 1:33:44Dax Shepard?

But I think that's the most amount of things I did in one day in quite some time.

• 1:33:47Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:33:48Dax Shepard?

  At my new heavyweight.

• 1:33:50Speaker 01

Sure. Sure. Um, okay. I have an update too.

• 1:33:54Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:33:54Speaker 01

Two updates, actually. One is I have bad news.

• 1:33:59Dax Shepard?

  Uh oh.

• 1:34:00Speaker 01

I'm not gonna do a gift guide this year.

• 1:34:02Dax Shepard?

  Oh my God, Monica.

• 1:34:05Speaker 01

  But, but.

• 1:34:06Dax Shepard?

You know, I had a hunch this was coming.

• 1:34:09Speaker 01

  This, this year, I.

• 1:34:11Dax Shepard?

Can I make an overall prediction about you? And me?

• 1:34:15Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:34:16Dax Shepard?

  You're just too fried.

• 1:34:17Speaker 01

  I'm fried.

• 1:34:18Dax Shepard?

You're fried. Yeah, yeah, I'm fried too.

• 1:34:21Speaker 01

  I'm fried.

• 1:34:22Dax Shepard?

I had this weird feeling. I was like, because I was having the fried feeling laying about going like, I've got to start Christmas shopping.

• 1:34:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:29Dax Shepard?

But I feel so, I, I just, because I've been shooting things and doing this.

• 1:34:33Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:34:33Dax Shepard?

Felt like, I don't have time.

• 1:34:35Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:34:36Dax Shepard?

And I've been laying about going like, I gotta get, and I was like, God, I wish fucking Monica would get that Christmas guide up in November. And then I was like, I don't think she's gonna do it this year.

• 1:34:45Speaker 01

  Okay, listen, couple things.

• 1:34:47Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:34:47Speaker 01

One, yeah, I'm fried. When the year is supposed to be slowing down, it's actually speeding up.

• 1:34:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:34:54Speaker 01

We have to get a little bit ahead.

• 1:34:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:56Speaker 01

We also have, um, Mon's Giving, Thanksgiving, all the things. Travel. Travel, all these things, and then, yeah, then, and Beth's dead, which is doing so well over. I'm very, very happy and thank you for everyone for listening. Please keep listening and spreading the word, but like, that's taking up some energy. The extra, only extra energy is now there.

• 1:35:18Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:35:19Speaker 01

And I don't, I have to be inspired for the gift guide. It doesn't make sense if I'm just like, what should I put on it?

• 1:35:30Dax Shepard?

  13 items.

• 1:35:31Speaker 01

Yeah, then people aren't getting a good gift guide. It has to be real.

• 1:35:34Dax Shepard?

Welcome to our world, which is why we need you is we, that's how we feel about presents all the time. None of it's inspiring. I'm not like, oh, that's perfect. That doesn't happen for me. So it's literally just like, I gotta fill slots.

• 1:35:48Speaker 01

Okay, but I'm gonna throw you, I'm gonna, I'm gonna throw you a bone.

• 1:35:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay, I'll receive it.

• 1:35:54Speaker 01

So, I'm not doing the gift guide, but what I will do from here up until Christmas, I guess, or for the next few weeks, on the fact checks, I'll give a couple items.

• 1:36:06Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:36:06Speaker 01

Okay, and so, check into the fact check if you want my gift guide items. And also, you're, you're now the first to know these items.

• 1:36:14Dax Shepard?

I'll be able to get it before they're sold out, which I do appreciate.

• 1:36:17Speaker 01

Um, okay, so I'm gonna go ahead and give you something now.

• 1:36:20Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:36:20Speaker 01

Okay, so there's a brand. It's called Tekla. Tekla Fabrics.

• 1:36:26Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:36:27Speaker 01

Okay. It's a, I really, really like this brand. They have

• 1:36:34Speaker 01

Pajamas that I really like, but also towels. It's like a homeware store.

• 1:36:42Speaker 03

You guys have it in Nashville.

• 1:36:44Dax Shepard?

  Oh, we do?

• 1:36:44Speaker 03

Yeah, Nashville house has Tekla towels.

• 1:36:47Dax Shepard?

Oh, we have the towels already.

• 1:36:49Speaker 01

Oh, shit. Well, get them for somebody else who doesn't live there then.

• 1:36:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:56Speaker 01

Okay, yeah, see, so they're kind of, there's like striped ones that are really beautiful.

• 1:37:00Dax Shepard?

Those do look familiar and I do love the texture of the towels in Nashville.

• 1:37:05Speaker 01

They're, they're really good and I really like their sleep. I have a pink striped pajama that I really like and they have shorts and stuff. So I feel like if you go to Tekla, you can get some towels.

• 1:37:21Dax Shepard?

  T E C H L A?

• 1:37:23Speaker 01

  T E K L A.

• 1:37:25Dax Shepard?

  T E K L A, okay.

• 1:37:27Speaker 01

Okay, and there's a, there's a limited edition and there's a robe that looks really cute on the limited edition. So you might need to, you need to get that fast. It's called the gentlewoman.

• 1:37:38Dax Shepard?

  Gentlewoman.

• 1:37:39Speaker 01

Okay, be nice to me. I'm trying to give you some help.

• 1:37:42Dax Shepard?

  Free tip.

• 1:37:44Speaker 01

Yeah, so Tekla, great brand. Go there, buy some stuff. That's all I have for today.

• 1:37:51Dax Shepard?

Okay, great. Those will get the ball rolling.

• 1:37:53Speaker 01

All right, let's do some facts.

• 1:37:55Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:37:59Dax Shepard?

  What are you laughing at?

• 1:38:01Speaker 01

So we're doing facts for Darcy and peek behind the curtain. P B W, nope. He, this is what Rick Glassman can do so well.

• 1:38:13Dax Shepard?

  So speedy.

• 1:38:13Speaker 01

  Yeah, P B T C.

• 1:38:17Dax Shepard?

  P B T C.

• 1:38:18Speaker 01

  We just interviewed Darcy.

• 1:38:19Dax Shepard?

  One second.

• 1:38:20Speaker 01

  Just once, she's still here.

• 1:38:21Dax Shepard?

  She's in the house chatting.

• 1:38:23Speaker 01

She is, and when that has to happen, when we have to do a quick turnaround.

• 1:38:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:27Speaker 01

Rob has to take down the facts while we're, while we're recording because I.

• 1:38:31Dax Shepard?

  Good luck.

• 1:38:32Speaker 01

Cause I can't go back in time, you know, whatever, I can't edit it. So he has taken down the facts today.

• 1:38:37Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:38:38Speaker 01

  And the first fact is.

• 1:38:39Dax Shepard?

Do you feel really busy on those days, Rob, or is it manageable?

• 1:38:43Speaker 03

Uh, it's a little busy because I'm also trying to find the answers to the facts.

• 1:38:46Dax Shepard?

Sure. And listen for new ones?

• 1:38:49Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's manageable though.

• 1:38:51Dax Shepard?

  Maybe you have ADHD.

• 1:38:52Speaker 03

  Maybe.

• 1:38:52Dax Shepard?

  Ding ding ding.

• 1:38:53Speaker 01

Okay, so the first fact is Dax's favorite song by Sabrina Carpenter is.

• 1:38:59Dax Shepard?

  Say please, um, don't smile.

• 1:39:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:02Dax Shepard?

How do you feel about 2026 coming up?

• 1:39:04Speaker 01

Um, well, I think I feel good.

• 1:39:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:09Speaker 01

I feel we like, you like round numbers.

• 1:39:12Dax Shepard?

I play a game, as you may or may not remember.

• 1:39:14Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:15Dax Shepard?

  I like even numbers.

• 1:39:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:16Dax Shepard?

Not round so much. Uh, like round features. That's what you're confused about.

• 1:39:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:20Dax Shepard?

But, um, I play a game because I hate odd numbers. So this year I focused on the fact that I was 50.

• 1:39:27Speaker 01

  Yep, exactly.

• 1:39:27Dax Shepard?

Despite the fact it was 2025, which is not great, although better than most odd numbers because it is divisible by many things.

• 1:39:33Speaker 01

Uh huh. And it has a five, which 50 has a five. There's some good symmetry there.

• 1:39:38Dax Shepard?

  There's some cohesion.

• 1:39:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:39Dax Shepard?

So now I'm going to shift and focus on it being 2026 and not 51.

• 1:39:44Speaker 01

  Right, sure.

• 1:39:45Dax Shepard?

And for me, there's only a 24 hour window where these aren't both at play.

• 1:39:50Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:39:51Dax Shepard?

So there'll be one day, January 1st. In fact, that should be the best day of my year because it'll be an even number, 2026, and it'll be 50 an even number.

• 1:39:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:39:59Dax Shepard?

I don't focus enough on that, probably because sometimes it goes against last year. It's probably the worst new year. And it was the worst New Year's. I had that terrible flu in Mexico.

• 1:40:10Speaker 01

  That's right. You almost died.

• 1:40:11Dax Shepard?

I was puking all day long and, and Hanusine.

• 1:40:13Speaker 01

And that's because it was the worst day. It's two odds.

• 1:40:16Dax Shepard?

I didn't even put that together till now, but now I understand it.

• 1:40:21Speaker 01

Um, okay. ID TV, is it only true crime? No. The network ID is not only true crime, although that it's, although that is its primary focus. It also features other crime-related programming such as investigative news, documentaries, and some nonfiction crime dramas. It's called Investigation Discovery. That's what ID stands for.

• 1:40:42Dax Shepard?

  So investigation's pretty baked in.

• 1:40:44Speaker 01

It seems like it. I think my mom watches a lot of ID TV.

• 1:40:49Dax Shepard?

I think a lot of older women watch ID TV.

• 1:40:51Speaker 01

She loves a true crime. Um, yeah, Fixer Upper was the show that Joanna and Chip Gaines had.

• 1:40:58Dax Shepard?

  Oh, great.

• 1:40:59Speaker 01

It was a big, I watched it a lot.

• 1:41:01Dax Shepard?

  You did?

• 1:41:02Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:41:02Dax Shepard?

I've never gotten sucked into a makeover show.

• 1:41:05Speaker 01

Yeah, that, that tracks. I mean, you have, you have.

• 1:41:09Dax Shepard?

  Tell me.

• 1:41:09Speaker 01

For cars, a car makeover show, Top Gear.

• 1:41:12Dax Shepard?

Well, that's not a makeover show. Um, but there have been makeover shows in the past. I did like, like pimp my ride or.

• 1:41:18Speaker 01

  Right, car.

• 1:41:19Dax Shepard?

There was a Chip Foose one where he would design a dream car for a very deserving person.

• 1:41:24Speaker 01

Uh huh. And that show that Robert Downey Jr. was on.

• 1:41:29Dax Shepard?

  Where he did electric conversions.

• 1:41:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

  Downey's dream cars.

• 1:41:33Speaker 01

  Downey's dream cars.

• 1:41:34Dax Shepard?

  DDC.

• 1:41:35Speaker 01

Okay. Does Sabrina Carpenter ever arrest men at a concert? Yes.

• 1:41:40Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:41:41Speaker 01

Carpenter has arrested men at her concerts, including celebrity guests like Corey Fogelman. Fogelman?

• 1:41:50Speaker 03

  Fogelmanis?

• 1:41:52Speaker 01

  From Girl Meets World.

• 1:41:54Speaker 03

I think they run it together.

• 1:41:56Speaker 01

  They run it together.

• 1:41:57Dax Shepard?

  Great.

• 1:41:58Speaker 01

That makes sense. Marcelo Hernandez, SNL, Domingo.

• 1:42:02Dax Shepard?

  Domingo.

• 1:42:03Speaker 01

And Joe Keery from Stranger Things.

• 1:42:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh, great.

• 1:42:07Speaker 01

Okay. What did Denzel Washington win an Oscar for? What came out the year before that was making up for it? Denzel Washington won the Academy Award for Best Actor in 2002 for his role in the 2001 film Training Day. In 2000, Remember the Titans came out. Great movie.

• 1:42:24Dax Shepard?

I can't say, though, that I think his performance in Titans is better than Training Day.

• 1:42:29Speaker 01

Me either, but maybe it was, it was like, oh, he might win for Remember the Titans, and he didn't. And I was like, oh, here he is again. He has to win.

• 1:42:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:38Speaker 01

Um, Darling Restaurant is in West Hollywood, and it's a Nashville chef.

• 1:42:45Dax Shepard?

  Oh, now I'm more interested.

• 1:42:47Speaker 01

  Real house.

• 1:42:47Dax Shepard?

  My neighbor.

• 1:42:48Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:42:49Speaker 03

You like the steak burger. They only make 24 of them every night? And then they sell out of them?

• 1:42:54Speaker 01

Is that the one in Nashville?

• 1:42:55Speaker 03

  No, that's the one here.

• 1:42:58Speaker 01

  I gotta go.

• 1:42:58Dax Shepard?

I gotta get one of those 24 burgers.

• 1:43:00Speaker 01

I'm getting one. And Rob wrote, "Very good!" exclamation point.

• 1:43:06Dax Shepard?

  Very good. Not great, Rob.

• 1:43:07Speaker 03

No, it's great. I loved it.

• 1:43:09Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:43:09Speaker 01

Did you have one of the burgers?

• 1:43:10Speaker 03

  I did.

• 1:43:12Dax Shepard?

Is it as good as Emily Burger?

• 1:43:15Speaker 03

  Um, they're different.

• 1:43:17Dax Shepard?

  They're different.

• 1:43:18Speaker 01

  What's on it?

• 1:43:19Speaker 03

Let me see if I can find a picture of it.

• 1:43:21Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:43:24Speaker 01

  Does it have caramelized onions?

• 1:43:26Dax Shepard?

  Caramelized?

• 1:43:28Speaker 01

  That's what I said.

• 1:43:29Dax Shepard?

  You know, is it caramelized?

• 1:43:30Speaker 01

  I said caramelized.

• 1:43:31Dax Shepard?

You're one of the people that says caramel? When you talk about a caramel?

• 1:43:35Speaker 01

  I guess I am.

• 1:43:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So then you say caramelized. Wow. That's how I, actually now I've, I've just figured out how to prove whether or not it should be caramel or caramel. I never knew, but now caramelized sounds so bad that it could only be caramelized, which means it's gotta be caramel.

• 1:43:54Speaker 01

It doesn't sound so bad to me.

• 1:43:56Dax Shepard?

  Caramelized?

• 1:43:57Speaker 01

  Caramelized.

• 1:43:58Dax Shepard?

Does that sound right? To you be honest, Monica?

• 1:44:00Speaker 01

Obviously it sounds right to me, if that's what I'm saying.

• 1:44:03Dax Shepard?

Well, I say stuff all the time. Someone points out and I go, oh, oh no, yeah, that does. You can have both.

• 1:44:08Speaker 01

It's caramelized onions, caramelized. To me.

• 1:44:10Dax Shepard?

  Caramelized onions.

• 1:44:11Speaker 01

I don't, I think that sounds just as good, if not better.

• 1:44:14Dax Shepard?

  I say caramelized. Yeah.

• 1:44:17Speaker 01

You guys are from the Midwest. It makes sense.

• 1:44:19Dax Shepard?

Caramelized. I've never heard that in my whole life. Thank you for introducing me to that pronunciation.

• 1:44:25Speaker 01

  You're welcome.

• 1:44:27Dax Shepard?

  Caramelized.

• 1:44:28Speaker 01

Um. What? I think it's fine.

• 1:44:32Dax Shepard?

  That sounds right to you.

• 1:44:34Speaker 01

Again, obviously it sounds right to me.

• 1:44:37Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 1:44:37Speaker 01

Because. Uh, that's how I say it.

• 1:44:41Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:44:42Speaker 01

  Um.

• 1:44:43Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:44:43Speaker 01

Oh shit, that burger looks delicious.

• 1:44:46Dax Shepard?

Okay. So it's a thick guy. It's a soup can style. A dad burger.

• 1:44:52Speaker 01

  What's on the bottom?

• 1:44:53Dax Shepard?

Girthy and narrow. It's just like a mayonnaise.

• 1:44:55Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 1:44:56Dax Shepard?

Paste? Well, look at the edge of that bun has just been cooked to perfection.

• 1:45:01Speaker 01

Oh my God, this bun is so cool. It's two top buns.

• 1:45:05Dax Shepard?

  You're right, two top buns.

• 1:45:06Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:45:07Dax Shepard?

That's the only tricky thing about, so when you're gluten free and you're eating burgers on their own all the time, like I am, or on a bed of lettuce. I think you get actually a better idea of how good the burger itself is. So often you think a burger is great because the bun's great.

• 1:45:24Speaker 01

  Mm hmm. That's huge.

• 1:45:25Dax Shepard?

It's such a big part of it and they can tip it. So like they've taken the time to grill and butter that bun and you're right away, the burger's gonna taste so much better.

• 1:45:33Speaker 01

And the cheese is a huge factor.

• 1:45:35Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:45:36Speaker 01

  Like people who are lactose.

• 1:45:37Dax Shepard?

That's what's a little unfair about my, um, crowning of Emily Burger being the best, although I stand by it. It is also the only burger I eat the bun with. That's like my one that I make an exception for.

• 1:45:48Speaker 01

  True.

• 1:45:49Dax Shepard?

  Cause it's a pretzel bun.

• 1:45:51Speaker 01

  So good.

• 1:45:51Dax Shepard?

  Fuck me.

• 1:45:53Speaker 01

Now, hold on. Okay, so some people say caramel, right?

• 1:46:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's you.

• 1:46:00Speaker 01

Wait, I say, yeah, that's what I say.

• 1:46:02Dax Shepard?

Yeah. You say like, oh, I want some, some of those caramels.

• 1:46:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:46:07Dax Shepard?

And I would say, I want some of those caramels.

• 1:46:08Speaker 01

Yeah, but now I think actually it, I think maybe caramel is what southerners say. So then why am I?

• 1:46:17Dax Shepard?

  Caramel.

• 1:46:17Speaker 01

Yeah, it makes sense that they would say caramel because it's lazier.

• 1:46:22Dax Shepard?

  Well.

• 1:46:22Speaker 01

That, I mean, no, I'm from the South. That's what happens. We shorten things up and make it like, you know.

• 1:46:28Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but I'm just gonna, I'm gonna push back in the same way that AAVE was defended successfully academically. Which is lazy is a pejorative. You could say efficient.

• 1:46:40Speaker 01

  Well, you.

• 1:46:41Dax Shepard?

  More efficiently.

• 1:46:42Speaker 01

Were molested, so you get to talk about that. And I'm from the South, so I get to say it's lazy.

• 1:46:46Dax Shepard?

But I was just defending you guys.

• 1:46:48Speaker 01

I know, but I don't think it's bad. I just think it's like, you know, lazy speech.

• 1:46:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:46:53Speaker 01

  In a fun way.

• 1:46:54Dax Shepard?

You could be more efficient, though.

• 1:46:57Dax Shepard?

Cause they tried to label African American vernacular, English is lazy.

• 1:47:01Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:47:02Dax Shepard?

And they're like, no, no, no, let's remember what the point of communication is. Conveying a message successfully to someone else. That's happening.

• 1:47:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:09Dax Shepard?

And it's being done differently. It doesn't make it lazy or bastardized.

• 1:47:13Speaker 01

Do you say the nut that is in pie often?

• 1:47:17Dax Shepard?

Well, I intentionally say it a certain way.

• 1:47:20Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:47:21Dax Shepard?

Again, my producer friend who will remain nameless, I don't want to name drop. We were in the hot tub with the kids and we were talking about them. A lot, my kids have accidentally said the wrong pronunciation of words that I say intentionally wrong.

• 1:47:35Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:47:35Dax Shepard?

  Debris. I never say debris.

• 1:47:37Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:47:38Dax Shepard?

Cause it's spelled debris and it sounds funny.

• 1:47:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, you think it's funnier.

• 1:47:41Dax Shepard?

And Link, poor Lincoln was reading out loud in class and pronounced something debris and then was embarrassed.

• 1:47:46Speaker 01

  Aww.

• 1:47:47Dax Shepard?

And then had to say, my, sorry, my dad says debris. I know it's debris, blah, blah, blah.

• 1:47:51Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 1:47:52Dax Shepard?

Um, but my producer friend said my father did that nonstop. But we have so many words that we say.

• 1:47:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:58Dax Shepard?

So I will say pecan pie.

• 1:48:02Speaker 01

Yeah, that's how you say it.

• 1:48:02Dax Shepard?

  But I say pecan.

• 1:48:05Speaker 01

  Your natural is pecan.

• 1:48:06Dax Shepard?

  In Detroit is pecan.

• 1:48:07Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:48:08Dax Shepard?

But I'll say, ooh, I want some pecan pie, cause it's more fun.

• 1:48:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, and it.

• 1:48:13Dax Shepard?

And it's not lazy. It's kind of longer.

• 1:48:14Speaker 01

It, that's what caramel. That's why I'm getting confused.

• 1:48:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, pecan caramel. Caramel. Sometimes there is caramel on a pecan pie. Can you even say pecan?

• 1:48:24Speaker 01

  Pecan.

• 1:48:25Dax Shepard?

  Good job.

• 1:48:26Speaker 01

Pecan pie. That sounds not tasty.

• 1:48:28Dax Shepard?

It's not as, you're right. It's not appetizing.

• 1:48:31Speaker 01

And either is caramel, like, ew. I actually am not a fan of caramel.

• 1:48:36Dax Shepard?

  I don't like it.

• 1:48:38Speaker 01

  You don't?

• 1:48:39Dax Shepard?

And I don't know why. Caramel.

• 1:48:40Speaker 01

  No, I'm saying the thing.

• 1:48:42Dax Shepard?

I love caramel. I love it so much.

• 1:48:46Speaker 01

  You say salted caramel pie.

• 1:48:47Dax Shepard?

I said, I love caramel. I'll spread them all over myself.

• 1:48:51Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:48:52Dax Shepard?

You ever have caramels eaten off of yourself?

• 1:48:55Speaker 01

Okay, nope. Okay, I'm right that the southern.

• 1:48:58Dax Shepard?

You ever fall down on a pecan pie, get it all over your tush? And then one of your friends asks, like, get it off of our mouths.

• 1:49:05Speaker 01

  Ew.

• 1:49:08Speaker 01

Oh, my God. Okay, yes, the southern pronunciation of caramel is typically caramel, which is a three-syllable pronunciation. This is in contrast. A two-syllable pronunciation caramel, which is more common in the West and Midwest. Okay, how many people are in the 42nd Street cast? Varies, but typically features a large ensemble. The 1981 Broadway revival is noted for having a cast of nearly 60 people.

• 1:49:36Dax Shepard?

Holy smokes. So she was 60% correct.

• 1:49:41Speaker 01

She was, yeah, that's right. That's exactly right. That's it for Darcy facts. Thank you, Rob.

• 1:49:46Dax Shepard?

  You got it.

• 1:49:46Speaker 01

For taking those down. And, um, thanks, Darcy.

• 1:49:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, all right. Love you.

• 1:49:52Speaker 01

  Love you.
