Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston (The Morning Show, Cook with Clydeo, Friends) is an Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actor. Jennifer joins the Armchair Expert to discuss the hidden messages in children’s literature, why doing podcasts can be like waking up from anesthesia, and the bait and switch of her actor dad deciding to train as a doctor in Greece. Jennifer and Dax talk about her apocryphal encounter with producer Warren Littlefield at a gas station, the cultural significance of why the show would never hurt a Friend, and whether she’s ever disguised herself to be anonymous to the outside world. Jennifer explains her contribution as a dog mother to the kids book universe, the balance she strikes in her character within the world of Morning Show, and why making people laugh becomes the salve that gets us through the world. • 0:00Dax Shepard?

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dax Shepard and I'm joined by Monica Lilly Padman.

• 0:05Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 0:07Dax Shepard?

Congratulations to my little friend from down in Duluth, Georgia. Goes around the bend.

• 0:14Speaker 01

  Oh, nice.

• 0:15Dax Shepard?

She loved this show called Me and My Friends. Her number one pals come down Jennifer Aniston.

• 0:22Speaker 01

Wow, that was kind of good.

• 0:24Dax Shepard?

  Kinda not great.

• 0:26Speaker 01

  I really liked that, actually.

• 0:28Dax Shepard?

  Congratulations, Monica.

• 0:30Speaker 01

This was a big deal, huge deal, big full circle.

• 0:33Dax Shepard?

Humongous deal. Jennifer Aniston's here. And all because of you. You, you wrote a beautiful letter to her. Our good friend, Molly McNerney, passed it on to Jen and God bless her, she read it and she said, yeah, I'm gonna come meet this girl.

• 0:46Speaker 01

I know, so nice. It was so, so nice. They say never meet your heroes, but so far it's worked out pretty well for me.

• 0:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Okay, friends, just go with it. We're the Millers, horrible bosses. And of course, season four out now on Apple TV Plus, The Morning Show. She also has the cutest book out now, Cook with Clydio, a cookbook for kids. Clydio is her dog Clyde's foreign cousin dog, Clydio.

• 1:17Speaker 01

  So cute.

• 1:19Dax Shepard?

It's so cute. And then on top of that, please, madam, will you demonstrate? Do your best of Anna White right now.

• 1:26Speaker 01

Okay, so we didn't really get to talk that much about Lola V in the pod, so I wanted to give it a little time right now. She sent all of this incredible Lola V hair products and they're really good.

• 1:42Dax Shepard?

  They're top notch.

• 1:42Speaker 01

They're really good, as you can imagine.

• 1:44Dax Shepard?

Spray some in your hair right now to demonstrate.

• 1:46Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'll spray.

• 1:47Dax Shepard?

  Do a spray.

• 1:48Speaker 01

The peptide plumping volume spray, because I need a little, I need a little volume up top. Okay.

• 1:55Dax Shepard?

Plumping volume spray. I hope that doesn't attract the wrong customer base.

• 2:00Speaker 01

  It smells so good.

• 2:01Dax Shepard?

  I bet.

• 2:02Speaker 01

And you want your hair to smell good because that's where the pheromones come from.

• 2:05Dax Shepard?

Sure, that's where men are nuzzling their noses.

• 2:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 2:09Dax Shepard?

Getting their nose right in there.

• 2:10Speaker 01

Does it look nice and voluminous?

• 2:12Dax Shepard?

Oh yeah, it really does. It really picked up the volume.

• 2:13Speaker 01

Yeah, it's really nice. I mean, there's so much. She has shampoo. She has so many products and they're all great.

• 2:20Dax Shepard?

Well, you want to hear something embarrassing? She sent a box. I went through it and I saw there was doggy shampoo. She makes doggy shampoo.

• 2:26Speaker 01

  Cute.

• 2:26Dax Shepard?

Went to put it away where our doggy shampoo is. Guess what? We already buy this product. Our dogs already love this product.

• 2:33Speaker 01

  Of course you do.

• 2:34Dax Shepard?

God, I wish you would make some teeth brushing solvent for our dogs. Ah, Lola V.

• 2:40Speaker 01

  Lola V.

• 2:40Dax Shepard?

Lola V. Get some Lola V. Read, cook with Clydeo and watch the morning show and please enjoy Jennifer Aniston. This episode of Armchair Expert is presented by Apple Pay. I love you guys so much.

• 6:32Dax Shepard?

Whoa, I'm walking in with a huge mirror.

• 6:34Speaker 02

  What's happening?

• 6:35Speaker 01

Well, this is an offering for you. If you want.

• 6:37Dax Shepard?

We both, we both dressed for you.

• 6:42Speaker 01

  Well, you know.

• 6:43Speaker 02

  Tuesday.

• 6:44Dax Shepard?

It's Taco Tuesday, so I think that allows for a lot of funny business.

• 6:49Speaker 01

  And technically happy hour.

• 6:51Dax Shepard?

  In Atlanta.

• 6:53Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 6:54Speaker 02

  This is in your garage.

• 6:56Dax Shepard?

This is in the garage. Yeah, the old thing is upstairs. So we used to be upstairs and now we're in the garage.

• 7:03Speaker 02

Well, I've seen this setup because you were in a different chair.

• 7:06Speaker 01

  Yeah, you've probably seen upstairs.

• 7:08Dax Shepard?

Full Lazy Boy. We were both in Lazy Boys.

• 7:10Speaker 01

  Mm-hmm.

• 7:11Dax Shepard?

I wore this for you, but I can't go much further now. I'm a little hot. Yeah, can I take this off now?

• 7:18Dax Shepard?

I'll put it back on for picture time. But do you want to take a quick pic now? Look at your friends are on the screensaver.

• 7:24Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 7:25Dax Shepard?

  Clyde, Clyde, Clyde.

• 7:27Speaker 02

  And Lord Chesterfield. Come on.

• 7:31Speaker 01

  Oh, my goodness.

• 7:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 7:36Speaker 01

  Do you like Babar?

• 7:37Speaker 02

  Do I like Babar?

• 7:39Dax Shepard?

She likes Babar. She might not know she does, but yeah, she likes Babar.

• 7:43Speaker 02

  My childhood books.

• 7:44Speaker 01

  I know, special books.

• 7:46Speaker 02

Dr. Seuss and the Babars of the world.

• 7:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 7:48Speaker 01

  Remember when?

• 7:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:50Dax Shepard?

I saw you say that you like Babar, and I like Babar, but then I started thinking, why do I like Babar? Like, when I think of Shel Silverstein.

• 7:57Speaker 02

I don't know the stories of Babar, do you?

• 7:58Dax Shepard?

Nor do I. I just love the image of the elephant. But I'm not sure what he did or what he was up to.

• 8:02Speaker 01

I think he was a king.

• 8:04Dax Shepard?

  Certainly in this photo, yeah.

• 8:07Speaker 02

Could you imagine if we go back and we just read?

• 8:09Dax Shepard?

  He was a predator.

• 8:10Speaker 02

Yeah, like it represented all of this awful shit. We're like, I didn't know that's what it meant. It's sort of like when you realize that Wizard of Oz had all these hidden messages.

• 8:19Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 8:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah, especially if you smoke grass and put on Dark Side of the Moon.

• 8:24Speaker 02

  Is it a play backwards?

• 8:26Dax Shepard?

I think you do a little backwards playing.

• 8:27Speaker 02

  I wanted to do that.

• 8:29Dax Shepard?

Okay, so one of my questions was gonna be, what's your nervous level out of 10?

• 8:33Speaker 02

My nerve level right now is so nothing because I'm just talking with you guys.

• 8:38Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 8:39Speaker 02

Have you been rolling the whole time? Is that how you guys do it?

• 8:42Dax Shepard?

  Well, we always are rolling.

• 8:43Speaker 02

I hope so, because that's awesome.

• 8:45Dax Shepard?

  Always be recording.

• 8:45Speaker 02

Actually, you know what you say right after the hour? Just say, okay, let's start rolling.

• 8:49Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 8:50Dax Shepard?

  And action.

• 8:51Speaker 02

Then the nerves will get up and then I'll be like, oh. And then you'll say, joke, it was done. We did it. You actually, it's like coming out of anesthesia. Oh, no, no. It's over.

• 9:01Speaker 01

Or like when a kid gets a shot, you like distract them. It's like, we did it.

• 9:04Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes.

• 9:06Speaker 02

Right. I had a director actually once. Oh, I'm not gonna remember his name.

• 9:10Speaker 01

  That's all right.

• 9:11Dax Shepard?

  We don't need to.

• 9:11Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 9:11Dax Shepard?

  We'll keep it vague.

• 9:12Speaker 02

We would be talking and rehearsing and then he'd go, okay, go ahead.

• 9:16Dax Shepard?

  And did you like that?

• 9:17Speaker 02

Took us a minute to know what he meant. Okay.

• 9:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:21Speaker 02

Go ahead. Oh, actually, go ahead. Also, start acting.

• 9:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Go ahead and do the thing.

• 9:27Speaker 02

But he would do it not like it wasn't a big deal. He's like, okay, go ahead. And then walk away and then we just go ahead.

• 9:32Speaker 01

I like that because no pressure.

• 9:34Dax Shepard?

Was this person's name Clint Eastwood? Is that the name you can't think of?

• 9:39Speaker 02

  Marty Scorsese.

• 9:41Dax Shepard?

Well, I do think I've heard that Hitchcock would say, have you heard this one?

• 9:45Speaker 02

  No.

• 9:46Dax Shepard?

  Entertain me.

• 9:47Speaker 02

Oh, yes, I have heard that.

• 9:49Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 9:50Dax Shepard?

Which is like giving your personality, like I would dig it.

• 9:53Speaker 02

  Me too.

• 9:53Dax Shepard?

But I could also, people be like, I'm not a monkey here to entertain you, you know?

• 9:58Speaker 02

Oh, my God. I am not here to entertain you.

• 10:02Dax Shepard?

But I was thinking if you were nervous, I was thinking we could do some transcendental meditation together. And then I was curious, how do you sit when you do your TM? And is this it?

• 10:10Speaker 02

This is pretty much it. Or if I'm in a chair or if I'm in the back of a car or from on an airplane or wherever it is, the many, many, many locations that I will go into a little if I need to sort of chill it.

• 10:22Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And I was wondering, because I have a couple of different friends that do TM as well. And one of my friends.

• 10:28Speaker 02

  Do you?

• 10:29Dax Shepard?

  I do.

• 10:29Speaker 02

  Amazing.

• 10:30Dax Shepard?

I think you and I differ a bit on, it's hard for me to embrace something like that. It's a little out there for me.

• 10:37Speaker 02

  Which part?

• 10:37Dax Shepard?

It's religion adjacent, even though it's not, as I learned. But there's something metaphysical happening a little bit. There's like spirituality, just the notion of spirituality scares me a little bit. Only because I'm afraid I'm not gonna. Experience what everyone else is experiencing.

• 10:51Speaker 02

Which is actually all that's happening right now as we sit here and speak.

• 10:53Dax Shepard?

  Absolutely.

• 10:54Speaker 02

  Correct.

• 10:55Dax Shepard?

But TM, I went into a little apprehensive and it fucking worked the first time. I was shocked.

• 11:00Speaker 02

Can I ask you specifically what worked? Was it the first time you meditated it worked? Or the first period that you were doing it for a while is when it worked?

• 11:09Dax Shepard?

The first time Lynn came over, maybe, do you know Lynn?

• 11:12Speaker 02

  I had Penny.

• 11:13Dax Shepard?

You had Penny? Okay. But all from the David Lynch thing?

• 11:16Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 11:16Dax Shepard?

So Lynn came over and again, the scary stuff is like, we've got some brass trays. There's some smoke happening. That's the stuff where I'm a little bit like.

• 11:23Speaker 02

When all of those pictures, the photo frame came out.

• 11:25Dax Shepard?

We're paying homage to some deities, maybe. She gave me my mantra and I did it. 20 minutes later, I was like, oh Lord, I like just experienced a level of calmness and lack of racket. I didn't think I was capable of, holy shit, it works.

• 11:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:41Dax Shepard?

This mantra thing is real. They tell you not to tell anyone your mantra.

• 11:45Speaker 01

I know. I was gonna ask this. If it goes well, will you tell us your mantra?

• 11:49Dax Shepard?

  I was.

• 11:50Speaker 02

Do you know, it's really funny how they instilled it and no one's holding a gun to my head. Penny's not outside.

• 11:56Speaker 01

  No.

• 11:56Speaker 02

She's not gonna come in and go, did you just?

• 11:59Dax Shepard?

But I have a friend who told me his mantra.

• 12:02Speaker 02

  Oh no.

• 12:02Dax Shepard?

  And it scared me.

• 12:03Speaker 02

  Is he dead?

• 12:05Dax Shepard?

  We lost him.

• 12:06Speaker 01

It's my test of friendship. So Dax has never shared his, so we're not quite there yet, but maybe we'll get there.

• 12:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:13Dax Shepard?

It scared me and I was like, normally I am so, I guess maybe punk rock, but I wouldn't tell him mine. And I'm wondering, what would be the price tag for you to tell someone your mantra? Would you?

• 12:24Speaker 02

Am I a rule follower? Not always. But in this case, I have chosen to commit to this practice. And if that is the one rule around it, I have no problem. I don't think anyone would pay me enough money that it actually would take for me to tell them my mantra.

• 12:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 12:42Speaker 02

I don't think they'd give a shit. That much to pay me a billion dollars. Cause that's how much it'll cost.

• 12:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay, that's the number.

• 12:50Speaker 01

  Write that down.

• 12:51Dax Shepard?

I do think there's something magic going on that I really am afraid to ever say. And I think it's funny that I feel that way.

• 12:57Speaker 02

I do too, cause you don't come across that way to me. The truth is, we're all here. This is kind of wild that we're all here.

• 13:06Dax Shepard?

  I agree.

• 13:06Speaker 02

We're all these bodies or we're all made of what atoms? This is all energy.

• 13:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 13:12Speaker 02

Believe it or not, and then there's something that's bigger than us. And the other thing that is also so crazy to me is that we are all, every human being on this entire planet, made up of the exact same shit.

• 13:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 13:26Speaker 02

And yet we have figured out a way with these wonderful brains that we've been gifted by, I don't know, whatever that is.

• 13:35Speaker 01

  Gifted and cursed.

• 13:36Speaker 02

To do what we have done. And I was driving over here and I was thinking to myself, I get sad.

• 13:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, me too.

• 13:43Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 13:44Speaker 02

Right? I get sad that there's so much.

• 13:48Dax Shepard?

  Fake and arbitrary difference.

• 13:50Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 13:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 13:51Speaker 02

And where does it come from and who creates it? It's like, hey, man, believe whatever you want to believe and you do you. But at the end of the day, you do think we're all the same.

• 14:02Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 14:03Speaker 02

Even if our skin is a shade darker, darker, lighter, lighter hair. We are all made up of the exact same wonderful stuff.

• 14:12Dax Shepard?

And we're embarrassingly predictable, given where we come from. So it's like, we think we have this really well sorted identity. And then you go like, well, but if you give me your zip code, I can tell you with like 90% likelihood, exactly what your opinions that you've thought of really well will be. I've been trying to read between the lines as I've watched a lot of interviews with you. And maybe rightly or wrongly, I have felt like we agree on that. My biggest thing that bothers me isn't any one of my issues that I also care about. It's just like, how the fuck do we get out of this? This is just like madness and it's getting worse every day. And everyone's yelling louder and louder. And how do we get out?

• 14:47Speaker 02

Everything seems very Pollyanna, any kind of thought you have, but it is, how do we get out of it? You say about the spirituality. I think the reason I lean more towards TM or that world of whatever faith is to me personally is because, you know, I'm Greek Orthodox. I was raised and I went to the Greek church on Sundays and my yaya had all of the pictures of the women in black that terrified me and gave me nightmares and her beads and she would talk to the wall of all these people and

• 15:17Dax Shepard?

  It's a little morbid.

• 15:19Speaker 02

It seems it, doesn't it? But for her, it kept her going. And she died at 98. Greeks are doing something right.

• 15:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 15:24Speaker 02

I was christened at Saint Sophia's and they drink the holy water, which is basically mine. And I vomited and she's like scooping up the vomit because it's sacred and the body of Christ is in there. It's the blood of Christ. She's like old at that point already. And so, yeah, I was in the car and I had just had wine and bread at like one or whatever.

• 15:47Dax Shepard?

I would have thought there might be a poltergeist in you. If you rejected it, you might be evil or a vamp.

• 15:55Speaker 02

  Hey, who knows?

• 15:56Speaker 01

  Who knows?

• 15:56Speaker 02

TBD. That's all up for grabs.

• 15:58Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 15:59Speaker 02

  Life ain't over just yet.

• 16:00Speaker 01

But I want to say something really quick because I think that is the answer. Because we talk a lot about status here in Dax. I was an anthropology major. So in-group, out-group comes up a lot.

• 16:09Dax Shepard?

  Too much, you could argue.

• 16:11Speaker 01

  I won't say that.

• 16:13Speaker 02

Wait, which comes up? Say again.

• 16:14Speaker 01

  In-group, out-group.

• 16:15Speaker 02

  What is in-group, out-group?

• 16:17Dax Shepard?

Because we're very social primates and we're kind of designed to live in a group of 100. That was our in-group. And the out-group, whatever group arrived, needed to be taken very seriously and with a lot of skepticism. It's not like you could just trust a stranger. So we have a lot of evolutionary things built in. We're really immediately good at identifying who the out-group is and identifying who the in-group is. So we have all this wiring. When you hear tribalism, tribalism is really in-group, out-group thinking. It's like this political thing. It's like, this is my group and that's your group. And we're just stuck with this terrible vestigial evolution that we somehow got to figure out how to get out of in-group, out-group because we don't live that way anymore.

• 16:57Speaker 01

But if we remember that in-group is exactly what you said, we are all one in-group.

• 17:02Speaker 02

We're all the group. It's just not as fun.

• 17:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 17:05Speaker 02

Is that just not as interesting?

• 17:07Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 17:07Speaker 02

So that's why I think this sort of spirituality or these new age or whatever you call it, super agers, what does that say up there? Trying to read that.

• 17:16Dax Shepard?

I read it as super agers. Cause they're very distracting to people. We've just met a lot of people. Well, that's when he pulled out the firearm, king surrender foolproof. No, no, hold on, you were about to say someone shot you? Yeah, but what is this book I'm seeing?

• 17:32Speaker 02

But religions, they all had the judgments about who you were with. And it just felt like if religion is something that divides people based on absolutely nothing factual.

• 17:43Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 17:43Speaker 02

About the human being and their heart.

• 17:45Dax Shepard?

The lottery of what house you were brought home to as a baby?

• 17:47Speaker 02

Yeah, because you grew up in this home and it represented that. And that's what you learned. And so that's what you then go out and you believe. And critical thinking, free thinking isn't sort of allowed or it's condemned or fear of God that you're going to go to hell for something. I don't do it.

• 18:03Dax Shepard?

  Not for me.

• 18:04Speaker 01

  Not for me.

• 18:05Dax Shepard?

Also, you were in New York City from what age did you, you were brought home from the hospital to Sherman Oaks?

• 18:10Speaker 02

Yes, right around the corner from Casa Vega.

• 18:12Speaker 01

  Ooh, I love it.

• 18:13Dax Shepard?

  Very fun place.

• 18:14Speaker 02

I have early memories of crawling. Mine was enchiladas with cheese.

• 18:17Dax Shepard?

And for folks who are not from here, crawling on that floor, it's not like you're on the floor of the Four Seasons. It's a very active, heavily drinking salsa on the floor, chips, sitch.

• 18:26Speaker 02

  It's like Times Square.

• 18:27Speaker 01

Probably around Times Square. Probably good for your microbiome. You got some germs in there.

• 18:34Speaker 02

  Strong immunity.

• 18:34Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 18:35Dax Shepard?

What age did you go to New York?

• 18:38Speaker 02

I went to New York at six years old. We went Sherman Oaks, Pennsylvania, Greece for a year, then to New York City.

• 18:47Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. And so you landed in New York City at six. So you probably left Sherman Oaks four-ish.

• 18:51Speaker 02

Like four-ish, four and a half.

• 18:53Dax Shepard?

And do you have any memories?

• 18:54Speaker 02

  In Sherman Oaks?

• 18:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 18:56Speaker 02

Besides crawling on the floor of Casa Vega?

• 18:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 18:59Speaker 02

Yeah, I remember the backyard. I remember my dad built a pool with his own two hands with his buddy.

• 19:05Dax Shepard?

  An above ground, I'm imagining?

• 19:06Speaker 01

  What?

• 19:07Dax Shepard?

  A real in-ground.

• 19:08Speaker 02

Well, he, there was someone that dug, he was doing a lot of the work. They were just back there, these guys.

• 19:12Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 19:13Speaker 02

So when my dad was an out of work actor.

• 19:15Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he had a little time on the stage.

• 19:17Speaker 02

Leads to the why we went to Greece of it all. And he was a door to door sales. He kind of was doing that stuff. I drove a tricycle into that pool. My brother had to save me.

• 19:28Dax Shepard?

It was full of water or not?

• 19:29Speaker 02

  Yeah, full of water.

• 19:31Dax Shepard?

  And we almost lost you.

• 19:32Speaker 02

I have a fear of water for that reason.

• 19:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 19:34Speaker 02

  Maybe that makes sense.

• 19:35Dax Shepard?

What happened in Pennsylvania? He wasn't chasing an acting role there.

• 19:38Speaker 02

No, but that's where my grandmother lived and my cousins and my aunt, my dad's sister. He left us there so he could go set us up in Athens with my Aunt Mary and my cousins.

• 19:49Dax Shepard?

  Was he gonna work there?

• 19:50Speaker 02

He was going to go to medical school in Greece because he could get into medical school in Greece.

• 19:55Dax Shepard?

Oh, boy, there's a lot there.

• 19:58Speaker 02

Yikes. Now, listen, he's dead. So he could have told me all of these stories.

• 20:03Dax Shepard?

You and I have the unique freedom to talk quite honestly about our fathers at this point.

• 20:07Speaker 02

  I know, we sure do.

• 20:08Dax Shepard?

Right, yeah. I think there's a lot there.

• 20:09Speaker 02

  Oh, there's a lot.

• 20:11Dax Shepard?

That feels so out of the blue to say, okay, I've been pursuing acting for 30, not 30 years, but if he was 30, I've been pursuing acting for 12 years. I'm gonna go to Athens to become a doctor feels borderline insane.

• 20:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:25Dax Shepard?

Was he the type of dude that would get something in his head and just chase it?

• 20:30Speaker 02

I wouldn't know because once he really became a person that I was able to sort of take in, he was an actor and he was barely there. He was like, where's John a little bit? But when we were in Athens, he was going to school.

• 20:46Dax Shepard?

Okay, how far did he get in his medical training?

• 20:48Speaker 02

Not far. We were only there a year.

• 20:50Dax Shepard?

Did he come home and take your temperature?

• 20:52Speaker 02

No, but we would watch all those shows. I remember watching a lot of medical stuff while eating dinner. That's why I love watching some weird shit. I can watch pretty much anything. I love a good surgery. I love to scrub up if they let me in.

• 21:04Dax Shepard?

Mom was getting drug along as well. And mom also was an actor, yeah?

• 21:08Speaker 02

She was. She wasn't very good. She'd be the first person to say it. She was on Beverly Hillbillies, The Red Skeleton Show, all those fun things that people will be like, what? And she was a model and then she became a mom.

• 21:19Dax Shepard?

Okay. And so when she had gotten drug to Greece for her husband's Medical pursuits. How was she processing that? Was she resentful at him? I would be pretty pissed, I think, if I met another actor and we're gonna do this acting thing. And then I wake up in Athens and you're becoming a doctor. I might feel like a little false advertising.

• 21:37Speaker 02

I don't think they had that sort of, let's go do this together. They met when she was modeling. My dad was the roommate of the photographer at the time and he just thought she was beautiful. She was dating the guy who owned the chain El Toritos.

• 21:51Dax Shepard?

Ooh, she should have stuck with him, maybe.

• 21:53Speaker 02

  Don't you think?

• 21:53Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 21:54Speaker 02

She says that, said that all the time.

• 21:57Dax Shepard?

  I hate to say it.

• 21:58Speaker 02

Nothing I love hearing more than that.

• 22:00Speaker 01

Yeah. Oh, God, that's so tough.

• 22:03Dax Shepard?

If I had stayed with Mike from El Toritos, we would be on a yacht right now. But no, I followed your stupid dad to Athens so he could be an optometrist.

• 22:10Speaker 02

And look at me now. These are all stories I'm just remembering. And then she told the story, I mean, my dad tells the story about how he just walked into the El Toritos one day or wherever they were on a date and kind of like slammed his hand down on the table and he claimed her. I don't know if he clubbed him and then dragged her out by the hair or what actually happened, but it all sounded very romantic.

• 22:32Speaker 01

Well, yes, that's right. That was the version of romance back then. Claiming.

• 22:36Speaker 02

  Correct.

• 22:37Dax Shepard?

I'd pay slightly more than I'd pay for your mantra to be sitting in a booth by myself at El Torito and watch some Greek man walk in dragging his girlfriend to confront the proprietor. Don't even think about it. She's with me now.

• 22:49Speaker 02

  She's mine.

• 22:49Speaker 01

It's so deep because that is the paradox, right? Like, it is romantic at first when someone's like, I love you so much. I need you. You're mine. And then that's actually the problem. That ends up being the problem that they feel ownership.

• 23:05Speaker 02

Yes. I would think they call that narcissism.

• 23:08Speaker 01

  That is correct, right?

• 23:09Speaker 02

If I don't have it, I have to have it. Now I have it. What do I do with it?

• 23:14Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 23:14Speaker 02

Do with this toy because that thrill is gone. You're not thrilling anymore.

• 23:17Dax Shepard?

Yes, you don't validate me in the way you once did. Now, they go to New York. This is pretty mind blowing and impressive. He was recurring on Days of Our Lives for 37 years.

• 23:31Speaker 02

He was on that show forever. In fact, the last episode he shot aired like a week after he died.

• 23:38Speaker 01

  Whoa.

• 23:39Speaker 02

Like, so he worked right up until that was it.

• 23:42Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 23:43Speaker 02

That was literally a wrap on John.

• 23:45Dax Shepard?

And when you guys got to New York, they made it another three years before they got divorced?

• 23:49Speaker 02

Yes, I was nine, so we got to New York at six.

• 23:52Dax Shepard?

And you went to live with mom, which was very customary.

• 23:56Speaker 02

So he found us an apartment, 92nd and Columbus, and $800 a month rent controlled, three bedrooms. She gave it up. Anyway.

• 24:05Speaker 02

21st floor. It was like, you could see the Hudson River, all of downtown. It was like Cher's dollhouse. I'm saying way too many references and people won't know anything.

• 24:13Dax Shepard?

Are you kidding? I was just playing with Cher's dollhouse.

• 24:15Speaker 02

  You were.

• 24:18Speaker 02

You could take the view in and out for daytime or slide in the nighttime view. And it was just twinkling lights of the Empire State Building and the East River and the Hudson River. And that was our view. Anyway, she let that go. Where were we?

• 24:30Dax Shepard?

He set you up in the apartment.

• 24:32Speaker 02

  Yep.

• 24:32Dax Shepard?

  And then he just bounced.

• 24:33Speaker 02

Opened up a restaurant while he was shooting. He was doing Love of Life at the time. He hadn't been on days. It was Love of Life at CBS. And then he moved uptown to be on a show called Search for Tomorrow. But before that, he met his co-star on Love of Life.

• 24:46Dax Shepard?

  Oh, it was that scenario.

• 24:47Speaker 02

A little one of those oopsie moments.

• 24:50Speaker 01

And was your mom outwardly saying, I hate him? What were you getting implanted with?

• 24:55Speaker 02

Parents weren't taught what I think parents are taught today, which is you be kind. You lead with kindness. Your partner, you can talk bad about them behind closed doors, not in front of your children, because that is.

• 25:07Speaker 01

  Abuse.

• 25:07Speaker 02

  Abuse.

• 25:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:09Speaker 02

Unfortunately, I do have some today that do that, but they almost just can't help themselves.

• 25:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 25:15Speaker 02

  It's some very strange.

• 25:17Dax Shepard?

You have to remember, I'm talking about someone's parent at the end of the day, even though they're my ex. This is someone's parent. They only get one.

• 25:24Speaker 02

And they get one. And let them have their experience with them. And when they grow up and leave the house and then can create their own opinion from what they've experienced personally, let them have that.

• 25:35Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 25:35Speaker 02

But up until that point, don't plant negativity because I'm a little impressionable brain.

• 25:39Dax Shepard?

But you, it sounds like sadly, are right a few times. You did want his attention.

• 25:45Speaker 02

Yeah, I would have given anything. I'm not going to cry. I actually just needed to take water.

• 25:50Speaker 01

  You're allowed.

• 25:52Dax Shepard?

  You're not allowed to cry.

• 25:53Speaker 02

I'm over it. So over it, guys. No, I truly am.

• 25:58Dax Shepard?

But don't you think there are many things I'm like, oh, I'm totally over that. I tell that story all the time and then I tell it to a therapist.

• 26:03Speaker 02

  Ah.

• 26:04Dax Shepard?

And then all of a sudden, I feel, I guess, safe enough to allow the emotions to come in. And I go, oh, wow, this is confusing. I was certain this had no power. And here I am quite emotional about this and this is a shocker.

• 26:16Speaker 02

  And it lived right there.

• 26:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it wasn't even far.

• 26:20Speaker 02

The question is asked and then you're like, what?

• 26:24Speaker 02

And literally like when they talk about those spies that can walk up to somebody and just go like that to the neck and then the person collapses.

• 26:33Speaker 01

Isn't it exhausting? There are some things we'll just never.

• 26:36Speaker 02

It is exhausting, but it shows you we're a constant work in progress. We are constantly, no matter what was imprinted into our neural pathways as children, they're there and we can think we've worked on them, but just as we experience life, new moments here and there and new people here and there, someone is going to come in and hit a little something somewhere that you go, whoa, that just made me think of that.

• 27:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's here now.

• 27:02Speaker 02

And that, I guess, is still to be looked at. And how wonderful that we have therapy and that we have people that we talk to, our friendship group, that we can bounce that stuff off so that we don't flip out. I don't know about your parents or your parents. How old are your parents?

• 27:16Speaker 01

  My parents are.

• 27:18Dax Shepard?

  Forty-nine and forty-eight.

• 27:19Speaker 01

Nope, they are not. They are sixty-three and seventy.

• 27:23Speaker 02

Sixty-three and seventy. So it's a different generation.

• 27:25Dax Shepard?

I'll let you guess who's what.

• 27:26Speaker 01

Oh, wouldn't it be cool if it was reversed? No, it's the normal way.

• 27:31Speaker 02

They weren't taught how to process emotions.

• 27:33Dax Shepard?

  They're also from India.

• 27:34Speaker 01

Oh, yeah. Mine are also immigrant. So that's another layer on top of zero emotions.

• 27:39Speaker 02

  Born in India.

• 27:40Speaker 01

  Yes, both born in India.

• 27:41Speaker 02

  Were you born in India?

• 27:42Speaker 01

No, I was born here. Or I was born in Georgia.

• 27:44Speaker 02

  No, in this garage.

• 27:45Speaker 01

I was born right here. This is where I came to be. This is kind of where I came to be.

• 27:49Dax Shepard?

  She's never left.

• 27:50Speaker 02

  Look at you now.

• 27:52Speaker 01

They're Indian and emotions are not to be touched.

• 27:55Speaker 02

  Ever.

• 27:56Speaker 01

  Ever.

• 27:56Speaker 02

And how do they feel now?

• 27:58Speaker 01

No emotions has really cost them some stuff. And so I think they've. Come around, but it's still like, we've talked about it a lot. Dax will be like, you need to tell your dad you love him. And I'm like, I can't, he'll freak out.

• 28:10Dax Shepard?

  He'll think I'm dying.

• 28:11Speaker 01

  He will freak out.

• 28:13Speaker 02

I don't want to kill him.

• 28:14Speaker 01

Yes, and I called them this weekend about something kind of emotional. And I can see the panic starting to happen. And I was like, Dad, this is why I can't tell you things.

• 28:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 28:24Speaker 01

Because now I'm trying to protect you from your emotions. And that can't be what's happening here.

• 28:31Dax Shepard?

I have totally surrendered. It is true. I'll go like, your dad wants to hear you love him. Everyone wants to hear that. I'm wrong. She's right.

• 28:37Speaker 02

Are you wrong? You are right.

• 28:39Speaker 01

  I'm right.

• 28:40Dax Shepard?

I surprised her one time. We were doing a live show in Chicago and I secretly called them and I said, can I please bring you to this live show so you can see your little girl? And how much people love her?

• 28:50Speaker 02

See, now that's gonna make me.

• 28:51Dax Shepard?

I can't even say it. I think of me getting to go see my little girl.

• 28:56Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 28:57Dax Shepard?

So I'm like, it's a surprise. And then I'm like, I can't tell her. If she finds out they're there, she'll recognize how much is happening. And she'll start getting very worried about them just witnessing her.

• 29:10Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 29:10Dax Shepard?

  Be loved on that level.

• 29:12Speaker 01

Oh, Dad. They did say they were proud of me. That's the first time I've ever heard it.

• 29:17Dax Shepard?

It was so cute. Her dad was like, everyone knows her. He just really thought it was so funny. People wanted to get her, picture and stuff. It was pretty great.

• 29:24Speaker 02

But had he even seen that before? That was probably overwhelming.

• 29:27Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah. They were overwhelmed.

• 29:28Speaker 02

  For them.

• 29:28Speaker 01

They were very overwhelmed in a good way. Cause all they want is safety for me. They don't care about any of this stuff.

• 29:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:36Speaker 01

I'm sure we'll get to that with you. But all you want is your kid to be safe. And then all this other stuff, it's proof that I am. I'm good on my own.

• 29:43Dax Shepard?

These 5,000 people agree she's safe.

• 29:45Speaker 01

Yeah. They were relieved for the first time. That was a gift.

• 29:49Speaker 02

  That's a huge gift.

• 29:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 29:50Speaker 02

  How long ago was that?

• 29:52Dax Shepard?

  Five years ago.

• 29:53Speaker 01

Probably. And they said, your mom and I are proud of you.

• 29:55Dax Shepard?

Do not take offense to this.

• 29:57Speaker 02

  No.

• 29:57Dax Shepard?

I don't, when I've met you, I don't go like, child of New York City. How immersed were you in the quite eclectic and colorful world that was Manhattan in the late seventies and eighties? Were you partaking in the, like, we just interviewed Mark Ronson.

• 30:13Speaker 02

Yes, he feels very New York.

• 30:14Dax Shepard?

Yes, yes. Or even the incredible director, Jordan.

• 30:18Speaker 01

  Peel?

• 30:18Speaker 02

  Peel.

• 30:19Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 30:19Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 30:20Speaker 01

  Love.

• 30:20Dax Shepard?

You know, he's on a block that's quite scary. He's got to walk to school and it informs then the rest of the ride.

• 30:25Speaker 02

  That's where I was.

• 30:26Dax Shepard?

What was your childhood like being in New York City?

• 30:30Speaker 02

Well, we lived in this building on 92nd and Columbus, but the block between Columbus and Amsterdam, and then Amsterdam Broadway, that was all abandoned buildings. I was on a bus by myself at 11.

• 30:42Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 30:43Speaker 02

Can you imagine? By yourself, throw your key in your sneaker and see a mom.

• 30:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah. In a much different New York.

• 30:49Speaker 02

Much different New York, especially up there. It started to become Preppyville and Upper West Side and all that stuff. But no, not when I lived there at all. You'd have to go around the block. There's a sniper in one of the buildings, one of the abandoned buildings. So it was all just normal. As I got older, I was mugged. I was mugged a couple of times.

• 31:06Speaker 01

  Like Ross.

• 31:08Speaker 02

  What'd you say?

• 31:09Speaker 01

  It said like Ross.

• 31:10Speaker 02

  Like Ross.

• 31:12Speaker 01

  He was mugged by Phoebe.

• 31:14Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 31:14Speaker 02

By Phoebe. Never forget. Never forget.

• 31:17Speaker 01

  Phoebe.

• 31:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:19Dax Shepard?

And did you have a lot of fear or did you quickly kind of acclimate?

• 31:23Speaker 02

I oddly didn't feel fear. I worked at Jackson Hole and 85th and Columbus. And then I'd walk home at midnight, you know, something a lot, but it's still from 85th and Columbus to 92nd and Columbus at midnight.

• 31:35Dax Shepard?

And what was your niche? You loved Duran Duran. Were you in a new wave? Did you dance?

• 31:40Speaker 02

I danced. Me and Dre, my best friend, who also has a podcast called Circle This.

• 31:44Dax Shepard?

Shout out Circle This. Go listen to it now. Pause this. Listen to that. Come back.

• 31:48Speaker 01

Is she still your best friend?

• 31:49Speaker 02

Still my best friend to this day. We were 14 and 15 when we met. We would go to Dance Terrier. We'd go to the Limelight. The Palladium was where we really liked to go and not a lot. We didn't drink. We didn't smoke. I mean, I might have smoked cigarettes, but no drugs. Or anything. We just would get dressed up and the amount of Aquanet in our hair.

• 32:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Extra firm hold.

• 32:11Speaker 02

Oh, extra. The blue, pink. I don't know. It was like you throw it all in.

• 32:15Dax Shepard?

Like the 26-ouncer, like the big boy where you'd be wrestling that fucker.

• 32:19Speaker 02

Yes. And your eyelashes would have to be like.

• 32:22Dax Shepard?

Just poisoned all in the air.

• 32:23Speaker 02

This is so crazy. Dance on those boxes that were surrounding the dance floor.

• 32:29Dax Shepard?

Oh, good. So you were devouring the city as much as you can at that age.

• 32:33Speaker 02

  And we could.

• 32:36Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 32:41Dax Shepard?

This message is brought to you by Apple Pay.

• 32:44Speaker 01

Dax, can you believe it's already fall? This year's flown by.

• 32:49Dax Shepard?

I know, right? But fall is my jam. Remember that farmer's market we hit up last weekend?

• 32:53Speaker 01

Yes, all those vendors with their yummy apple ciders and the big pumpkins. I love big pumpkins.

• 32:59Dax Shepard?

Artisanal apple cider, don't forget. And the smell of fresh baked goods, heaven. But here's what blew my mind. So many vendors accepted Apple Pay.

• 33:08Speaker 01

It was so convenient. I love Apple Pay. Everywhere I saw the contactless symbol, I just double clicked the side button on my phone to bring up my card and then just a quick little face ID scan, tap, boom. So easy.

• 33:20Dax Shepard?

Apple Pay has been my MVP this season to buy festive fall treats and drinks.

• 33:25Speaker 01

And you know, I'm on a mission to find the best fall themed latte in town. You know this.

• 33:29Dax Shepard?

I do know that. How's it going? That maple one you were telling me about sounded pretty insane.

• 33:33Speaker 01

It was so good. And get this, you can also use Apple Pay at lots of cafes, no fumbling for your wallet, just double click, tap and sip.

• 33:42Dax Shepard?

• 38:42Speaker 02

Oh God, I just watched the Charlie Sheen doc last night.

• 38:44Dax Shepard?

  Me too. I love it.

• 38:46Speaker 02

Oh my God. It's so fun.

• 38:49Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 38:49Speaker 02

And you just go, well, wow.

• 38:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 38:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 38:53Speaker 02

  All of them. George Clooney.

• 38:55Dax Shepard?

Yes, he's in those little videos.

• 38:57Speaker 02

Those videos and Penn and Nicolas Cage.

• 39:00Dax Shepard?

Yes, to find out they were best friends was a real revelation to me.

• 39:03Speaker 02

And that little friend group and Laura Dern, who was in everything then and she's in everything now.

• 39:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:08Speaker 02

  It's just wild.

• 39:09Dax Shepard?

It kind of feels impossible that they were all this little ragtag group.

• 39:13Speaker 02

  It's sweet.

• 39:14Dax Shepard?

When Sean Penn says, I can't believe he said this on camera. It's my favorite thing I've heard.

• 39:19Speaker 02

Which one? I'm trying to know it.

• 39:20Dax Shepard?

He goes, when people do, men do cocaine, copious amounts, they have heightened sexual desires while diminished sexual competency.

• 39:35Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, wow, you said coke dick in the most elegant way I've ever heard someone describe coke dick.

• 39:44Speaker 02

That's so interesting and makes so much sense.

• 39:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:48Dax Shepard?

Heightened desire while you have no competency. What a purgatory.

• 39:53Speaker 01

And yet they keep doing it.

• 39:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 39:55Speaker 01

  Over and over.

• 39:56Dax Shepard?

That in all sincerity, the moment that I realized, oh, we have a real problem was I was at a bar and I was talking to a very attractive girl and things were going very well. And I was like, I'm gonna get an eight ball. And I was like, if I get an eight ball, I'm not gonna be pursuing this anymore. I'm gonna get an eight ball.

• 40:15Speaker 02

Oh, so did you wait out for a second?

• 40:16Dax Shepard?

I had this snap moment of clarity of like, wow, you're choosing this thing over a girl, which for me, girl was everything.

• 40:24Speaker 02

And you really liked this particular girl you were speaking to.

• 40:26Dax Shepard?

She was very attractive and it was very fun. It was going very well. This is gonna be so fun. Normally, that's the funnest thing in the world.

• 40:32Speaker 02

  Right.

• 40:32Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, wow, we've elevated something above this thing that I previously thought was the most attractive thing we could do.

• 40:39Speaker 02

But that was more attractive and prettier.

• 40:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 40:42Speaker 01

Yeah, you were choosing between two drugs.

• 40:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yes, my first drug and then my second.

• 40:46Speaker 02

Torn between two lovers. That's right.

• 40:48Speaker 01

  Feeling like a fool.

• 40:49Dax Shepard?

Yes. Okay, so then you went to LaGuardia High School of Performing Arts, which is the Fame School.

• 40:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:57Dax Shepard?

And Fame was on TV when we were kids.

• 41:00Speaker 02

Yeah, well, I saw the movie when I was a kid.

• 41:02Dax Shepard?

I'm sorry, was it a movie?

• 41:03Speaker 02

And then it became a TV show.

• 41:04Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 41:04Speaker 02

Oh, you have to see the movie. Am I right? Alan Parker was the director? It is so magnificent. All due respect to the television show. You'll go, what? What was that? I mean, the cinematography, the characters, the acting. What'd I do?

• 41:18Speaker 01

I know, I wondered too, but it was also looking cute.

• 41:21Dax Shepard?

  It's very cute.

• 41:22Speaker 02

Oh, I'm very known for her.

• 41:23Speaker 01

I know, yeah, her hair is good.

• 41:25Dax Shepard?

But, yeah, she's known for her hair.

• 41:29Speaker 02

You know what? I had a whole bag of Lolivi for you both. And I walked out of the house without it. So this will be coming to you. I have hair paste for you.

• 41:37Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 41:37Speaker 02

And conditioner and for Kristen too. And then shampoos, everything.

• 41:40Speaker 01

  I can't wait.

• 41:41Dax Shepard?

And I have a bottle of Aqua Net for you.

• 41:42Speaker 02

A bottle of what? Aqua Net for me?

• 41:45Dax Shepard?

  Super extra firm hold.

• 41:46Speaker 02

  Okay. Not animal tested.

• 41:49Dax Shepard?

No. Exclusively animal tested. I think even orphan tested maybe.

• 41:54Speaker 02

It might have been little children.

• 41:55Dax Shepard?

  I think they went above.

• 41:56Speaker 02

They might have just said, screw it, let's hit the kids.

• 41:59Dax Shepard?

Okay, so was it hard to get into that school?

• 42:01Speaker 02

I was a very last minute get into that school because, oh God, I was such a bad student. I'm gonna say things that will embarrass me forever.

• 42:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 42:08Speaker 02

  I was a terrible student.

• 42:10Dax Shepard?

We have this in common. You're dyslexic, right?

• 42:12Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 42:12Dax Shepard?

  Me too.

• 42:13Speaker 02

  Frustrating.

• 42:14Dax Shepard?

And I thought I was the dumbest person alive.

• 42:17Speaker 02

If only someone thought to take this young kid, who struggles to take him to get tested. They didn't have it then, I don't think.

• 42:24Dax Shepard?

What I immediately thought when I learned you were dyslexic is you don't have the same chip on your shoulder I do. I've observed you don't have the same chip on your shoulder.

• 42:31Speaker 02

  What does it look like?

• 42:32Dax Shepard?

My chip is like, I'm a know it all. Everyone thinks I'm dumb. I gotta prove I'm smart all the time. And it's exhausting for you. You don't have that at all, yeah. I think that's interesting.

• 42:41Speaker 02

I kind of just know what I know and I know what I don't know. There was a period though, where I was mortified to walk into a room or be at a party. I would just think, I don't know. And I don't know how to carry on a conversation. And the truth is, the best thing to do is just ask questions.

• 42:53Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 42:54Speaker 02

  What does that mean?

• 42:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 42:55Speaker 02

  Explain that to me.

• 42:56Speaker 01

Knowing what you don't know is the smartest person in the room. The person who knows what they don't know.

• 43:01Speaker 02

Listen, textbook smart, street smart. I could say I'm expert street smart. My EQ versus my IQ.

• 43:07Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 43:08Speaker 02

  So we're doing pretty good.

• 43:10Dax Shepard?

But when they would start writing on the chalkboard and you, there would be questions that would follow that. If it wasn't auditory, if they weren't telling me something, they were just writing on that chalkboard, I was like, oh man, I hope to God they don't ask me what just happened. I don't know what the fuck is happening on that chalkboard. It's like hieroglyphics.

• 43:28Speaker 02

I was doodling. I was writing little scenes, sketches that we were gonna act out at recess. Or I'd write a note to somebody and then I would just get real good laughs and I'd be like, awesome. And they'd be like, what? Oh, I'm sorry. In the hall. Oh, shoot. Bummer. Yes, in the hallway. And I'd stand there for the rest of the class. I was just constantly maneuvering my way. So I went to performing arts. This is, sounds terrible. I wanted to be an actor, obviously, because that's all I thought I could do. This could sound awful, but between grade nine and 10, and we were given four books to read. And I was like, I'm never gonna read these books. I gotta get another school.

• 44:08Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 44:09Speaker 01

This is not gonna happen. I gotta change locations.

• 44:14Dax Shepard?

Like you saw those four books, it's like, I've just been kicked out of this school.

• 44:17Speaker 02

I was like, alright, so where are we going? Because that's not gonna happen. This is absolutely not gonna happen. These books are not going to get read. And I don't have any way to figure out a way around that. Can't go stand in the hallway around that.

• 44:30Speaker 01

There's no audiobooks back then. So, yeah.

• 44:32Dax Shepard?

  Do you love audiobooks?

• 44:34Speaker 02

I do love audiobooks, but I used to drift and I'd have to rewind. That's part of my dyslexia though, too, where as you'd be reading and then I'd go, oh, I just read a whole page and I don't know what I read because I'm not comprehending anything. And then my mind would wander.

• 44:48Dax Shepard?

Do you think you might have a little ADHD?

• 44:50Speaker 02

  I think I might.

• 44:51Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I don't think that about you, but I know, my wife is really coming to terms with the fact. Once I hear those symptoms and how they express in women.

• 44:59Speaker 02

Especially today. We have so many things that can distract us at once.

• 45:06Speaker 01

  Look at this room.

• 45:07Dax Shepard?

  A lot of stimuli.

• 45:08Speaker 02

I mean, just look at, I don't know if you can see what's behind you guys.

• 45:12Dax Shepard?

  They're just taunting you.

• 45:13Speaker 02

There's like some weird award I can't see clearly up there.

• 45:16Dax Shepard?

If I have to read these books, I'm out of here.

• 45:19Speaker 02

No, you could tell me that the only way that we can be on this podcast is to read these books. You also look like Chris Cornell in that Wheaties box for some reason from where I'm sitting.

• 45:29Dax Shepard?

I'm feeling a little intimidated as well about the books now. They always looked nice. Do you audition to get into?

• 45:35Speaker 02

So, yes, it was like late audition for last minute. I don't know why. I can't honestly remember.

• 45:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you just kind of woke up there one day.

• 45:42Speaker 02

I just woke up one day. I learned two monologues. I auditioned and then I came back and the next thing you know, I was accepted.

• 45:51Dax Shepard?

Did it live up to your, I'm sure you had concocted a pretty good fantasy and expectations about what the experience was going to be like. And did it live up to that?

• 45:58Speaker 02

  No.

• 45:58Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 46:00Speaker 02

  Well, it moved buildings.

• 46:01Dax Shepard?

  Oops.

• 46:01Speaker 02

So it wasn't in the old building on 46th street, which was half of the charm.

• 46:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 46:06Speaker 02

It was this big block building.

• 46:08Dax Shepard?

  A soulless building.

• 46:09Speaker 02

It was just thousands of kids.

• 46:11Dax Shepard?

  Oh, it's huge.

• 46:12Speaker 02

Sort of the charm was there, but the theater teachers were still there. They were also in the movie.

• 46:16Speaker 01

  Oh, fun.

• 46:17Speaker 02

A couple of them, Mrs. Shine, Mr. Moody.

• 46:20Dax Shepard?

Did they appreciate you? Cause the previous teachers were putting you in the hallway. Did it feel like at least you were kind of appreciated there?

• 46:26Speaker 02

I was appreciated, except from one teacher, Marat Youssef, who was one of our acting teachers, who said I was a disgrace to the theater.

• 46:34Dax Shepard?

Okay, all right. A little early to make that.

• 46:37Speaker 01

  Were you?

• 46:38Speaker 02

I probably was. I think I might've been pretty disgraceful. I was doing Chekhov and people were laughing.

• 46:44Dax Shepard?

Trying to look for the laughs.

• 46:45Speaker 02

  Always. Always.

• 46:47Dax Shepard?

Okay, so you make it out of there. You come to LA. You're probably 18.

• 46:52Speaker 02

  To LA, 19.

• 46:53Dax Shepard?

  19, 1990.

• 46:55Speaker 02

  No, I'm 20.

• 46:55Dax Shepard?

  You're 20 years old.

• 46:57Speaker 02

Cause I do three years of waitressing in college.

• 46:59Dax Shepard?

And you telemarteted, which is great.

• 47:01Speaker 02

I telemarteted when I first moved here. I worked at a Jackson Hole, was run by the wonderful Greek family. So I got an off Broadway show for two months. They let me do it, then I'd come back.

• 47:10Dax Shepard?

Oh, that's nice. You arrived here. You had a couple of pilots really quick. You guest starred a few times. Quantum's Leap, that's exciting. That's not the name. Quantum Leap, it's not plural. Yeah, yeah, you did that. There's a third one in there.

• 47:25Speaker 02

  There's a couple. I did Malloy. I did Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

• 47:28Dax Shepard?

  The spin off TV show.

• 47:30Speaker 02

  Television show version.

• 47:31Dax Shepard?

Yep. Speaking of fame and the spin off.

• 47:34Speaker 02

  So we're keeping a theme.

• 47:35Dax Shepard?

Now, my question there was, when I came here and I got on TV.

• 47:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:40Dax Shepard?

No matter what it was, it was so exciting because I was the first shepherd to ever be on TV. And I wondered, how does having two parents that had pursued it, one of them's on TV. How did it impact your excitement about getting on these shows?

• 47:57Speaker 02

There, having been in the business, you mean?

• 48:00Dax Shepard?

Were you thinking, oh, this isn't good enough, or it should be better? Or was there already a bar?

• 48:04Speaker 02

Well, the bar was just work. My dad was telling me, please don't do this. You're just gonna suffer rejection.

• 48:10Dax Shepard?

You're gonna be learning science in Athens.

• 48:12Speaker 02

Yeah, you're gonna end up in Greece anyway. Just go get a real job. All the cliche things.

• 48:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's so shitty. You would think at least two actors would be supportive, but no.

• 48:21Speaker 02

Yeah, although I mean, I think some actors today are like, oh, please don't.

• 48:25Dax Shepard?

  I hate that.

• 48:26Speaker 02

Whatever drives you. If you find passion in something and you love it, go do it.

• 48:30Speaker 01

Back to safety, though. Your parents generally want safety for the children and it's not safe. It is not a safe profession as far as like.

• 48:39Dax Shepard?

  It's a high risk.

• 48:40Speaker 01

It's a high risk. It's a high risk. Yeah, mentally. Yeah, emotionally.

• 48:44Speaker 02

I mean, just talk about Charlie Sheen.

• 48:46Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 48:47Speaker 02

Oh, no. He wasn't a kid actor. How old was he?

• 48:49Dax Shepard?

Well, he was fucking young. He was 20 when Platoon won Best Picture.

• 48:54Speaker 02

Right. But it wasn't like Bateman on Little House.

• 48:57Dax Shepard?

That's true. But he had made, that was surprising to me and I kind of admired it. They had made a catrillion movies, these kids.

• 49:04Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 49:04Dax Shepard?

  Charlie Sheen and His Buddies.

• 49:05Speaker 02

  They really did. Whole movies.

• 49:07Dax Shepard?

And yeah, you could go like, oh, nepo baby, blah, blah, blah. But it's like, no, these people have been practicing and were passionate about this since they were little kids.

• 49:14Speaker 02

  That nepo baby thing.

• 49:16Dax Shepard?

  It's kind of annoying.

• 49:17Speaker 02

Well, you know why? Because here's the deal. Simon, I mean, look at all the law firms, blanky blank, blanky and blanky blank. I mean, all right, isn't that a version of it?

• 49:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:25Speaker 02

It's all the family. Okay, so maybe you got into a door because you're so and so's kid, but if you suck, guess what?

• 49:32Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 49:33Speaker 02

You're not going to continue to do it.

• 49:35Dax Shepard?

They don't give a fuck after one or two.

• 49:36Speaker 02

  No.

• 49:37Dax Shepard?

You might get one or two. My point is like, what you're underestimating is you're only focusing on that you've inherited someone else's status. I get it. I would object to that. That's not fair to everyone else. But what they're not thinking about is like, our children have been to sets many times. My kids understand about lenses. My, I was walking with my daughter when she was six. She made a joke, I laughed. A minute later, she made the same joke, I didn't laugh. And she said out loud at six years old, I went back to the well too much.

• 50:05Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 50:06Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, yeah, that's the house she grows up in. She has a knowledge of this industry that I had about the automotive industry with automotive parents. She knows a lot fucking more and she'll show up knowing a lot more when she's competing with other kids. Now, is that because the door was open for her? Just she has the skill set already.

• 50:21Speaker 02

She was privy to having the education.

• 50:23Dax Shepard?

Growing up in Detroit, the commercial was on nonstop was father and son, we build a mall. No one's mad that, yeah, that kid was probably 10, carrying bricks and helping the dad build houses. And now they got father and son construction company.

• 50:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 50:36Dax Shepard?

Okay, I'm only going to ask you a single question about friends.

• 50:41Speaker 02

  That's it?

• 50:43Speaker 01

  I can't guarantee that.

• 50:44Dax Shepard?

Yes, I make no promises and nor would I want to, because this is her sopranos.

• 50:48Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 50:48Dax Shepard?

My thing I found really interesting when I was reading about all this, and I just have such a crush on them, I want to bring them up, but you were kind of feeling like you might want to throw in the towel. But just you were doing pilot after pilot and they weren't working. And then you ran into Warren Littlefield at a gas station. Is this apocryphal or real?

• 51:05Speaker 02

Oh God, that is true. Yes, because I had gone to the final stage, go to network. And then I think I definitely said something to him at a gas station. It was on Crescent and Sunset Boulevard and Crescent Heights.

• 51:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:18Speaker 01

  And what did you say?

• 51:19Speaker 02

I might've given him a headshot or I said something like, please cast me, please. I don't.

• 51:25Speaker 01

  Love it.

• 51:25Speaker 02

At another time, I said, will you please give me a washer dryer? And he wrote that down on a napkin.

• 51:32Dax Shepard?

As part of your negotiation or?

• 51:34Speaker 02

I just kept hearing that all these actors were getting cars and getting these things once they got hired and Friends had happened and we were, I don't know, at the up-fronts for something.

• 51:43Dax Shepard?

You wanted a congratulatory washer and dryer.

• 51:46Speaker 02

What are all these actors, why do they get these treats for shows and stuff? And I said, treats?

• 51:54Dax Shepard?

  Actor treats.

• 51:54Speaker 02

Actor treats. These elaborate, these very expensive gifts. And he was like, well, what do you want? And I was like, really? And he's like, yeah. And I couldn't think of anything. And I was like, I need a washer and a dryer.

• 52:07Dax Shepard?

No kidding? And did he deliver?

• 52:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:10Dax Shepard?

Oh, really? I lied. There were actually two I wrote down. The other one was, I had no idea until yesterday that you had been offered SNL.

• 52:20Dax Shepard?

That would have been impossible for me to turn down.

• 52:23Speaker 02

Well, you know, I was thought I was such hot shit. The story of that is all very confusing, honestly. Today, I'd have to ask Lorne, because I remember I was in New York City and I had a meeting with Lorne Michaels and I ran into Sandler and Spade in the room right outside. And I knew Sandler forever.

• 52:44Dax Shepard?

  You knew him pre-Friends?

• 52:45Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 52:46Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 52:46Speaker 02

Because he was very good friends with Charlie Schlatter, who played Ferris Bueller in the television version of Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

• 52:55Speaker 01

Wow, you guys go so far back.

• 52:56Speaker 02

So we met at Jerry's Deli in like 1912.

• 52:58Dax Shepard?

  Just before the Spanish flu.

• 52:59Speaker 02

Just before, right before. So I don't know why I had this self-righteous attitude of like, I don't know if women are treated the way they should be treated on this show. It's a very male-dominated, I would love to be here if it was in the Gilda Radner Day. I mean, this is the brain that semi-remembers things that are back that far.

• 53:17Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 53:18Speaker 02

Something like that. I can't remember, but I just remember Friends then happened and then that's where I went.

• 53:24Dax Shepard?

You really fucked up. You chose wrong.

• 53:26Speaker 02

  You think so?

• 53:27Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God, yes.

• 53:30Speaker 02

  People say regrets.

• 53:33Dax Shepard?

I could be interviewing you and I could be going, so you turned down friends for SNL? And people would be like, oh.

• 53:39Speaker 01

That would be the saddest story of all time.

• 53:42Speaker 02

  It all works out.

• 53:43Speaker 01

  It works out.

• 53:44Speaker 02

Everything is sort of meant to be.

• 53:46Speaker 01

Do you think that in the middle, when something is bad currently, are you like, it's gonna work out? Are you positive that way?

• 53:54Speaker 02

  Well, you have to be.

• 53:55Speaker 01

  It's hard.

• 53:55Speaker 02

It's hard, but you have to then consciously turn towards what's positive. I feel like a broken record. We're not designed to take in this much information.

• 54:07Speaker 01

  It's too much.

• 54:08Speaker 02

Our brains, we're not designed that way. There's way too much information from all over the world within a blip of a second. Every single bit of information. No wonder mental illness is through the roof and anxiety. It's a different time.

• 54:21Dax Shepard?

I totally agree. Back to the, when we lived with 100 other people.

• 54:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:25Dax Shepard?

  Our entire life.

• 54:26Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 54:27Dax Shepard?

You probably would never even hear about a murder your whole existence. Or maybe there'd be one. And you can hear about hundreds of murders a day. There might be one natural disaster in your lifetime. Here, you'll hear about all of them. You're so right. We don't have the capacity for it.

• 54:41Speaker 02

  We don't.

• 54:42Dax Shepard?

No, we think we do. We have this arrogance, like, oh, I can handle all this. I can watch news all fucking day long and not be affected. I don't think that's true.

• 54:49Speaker 02

I would rather live in ignorance is bliss.

• 54:51Speaker 01

  I understand that.

• 54:52Speaker 02

  I need moments of that.

• 54:53Dax Shepard?

Okay, I know you have friends thoughts, so I want to hear that.

• 54:56Speaker 01

I don't have friends' questions, really. I'm just grateful for it. That's it.

• 55:00Dax Shepard?

Here's what I wanted to connect the dots on.

• 55:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 55:03Dax Shepard?

So you didn't have a VCR and you're obsessed with Laverne and Shirley? And you used to record audio tapes on cassette tape of the episodes and then listen to just the audio? And I was like, if I've ever heard a Monica Padman thing in my fucking life.

• 55:19Speaker 01

Oh. We have some real crossover. I VHS taped every episode of Friends. This was before the DVDs and I had a whole color coded system.

• 55:31Speaker 02

  You did?

• 55:32Speaker 01

Yeah, where like each season was a color and I would write the episode on the tape in the right color. Then there was these pictures with the number of the tape and I had 32 tapes and you know, the finale was the day before an AP exam and fuck the AP exam.

• 55:47Speaker 02

Oh no, what did you do?

• 55:48Speaker 01

No, horrible. I had to watch, you guys were on something after, Leno maybe and then Oprah the next day.

• 55:54Speaker 02

  Oprah, Leno, I don't remember.

• 55:55Speaker 01

I had to tape it all and I didn't study. Why would I study the most important thing in the whole?

• 56:01Dax Shepard?

This is one in a lifetime.

• 56:02Speaker 01

Exactly, exactly. So I probably failed that test.

• 56:05Speaker 02

I feel like I owe you an apology for that.

• 56:06Speaker 01

You know what? It all worked out. Look at me.

• 56:08Dax Shepard?

  You're welcome.

• 56:09Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 56:10Speaker 02

  Oh my god.

• 56:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's a highlight of her.

• 56:12Speaker 01

  It was everything to me.

• 56:15Speaker 02

  That's so.

• 56:15Speaker 01

It was such an escape. I was thinking about it recently because I was like, what? I have so many reasons why, but one is we don't have comedies like that anymore. We don't have shows like that where you do kind of know it's gonna work out. Even though, you know, there's stakes. I'm not saying there's not, but it is going to work out and it makes you feel safe and it brings hope. My favorite shows now don't have hope. I love them, but they're scary and you don't know if it's gonna work out.

• 56:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but my shows are the ones where like they might kill the lead character. And you're like, fuck, I'm on pins and needles.

• 56:47Speaker 01

Yes, the anxiety is at a ten.

• 56:50Speaker 02

  So true.

• 56:51Speaker 01

It's the opposite of what that was, which is just reassurance.

• 56:55Speaker 02

Right. They can't hurt a friend.

• 56:57Speaker 01

  They would never.

• 56:57Speaker 02

They're not gonna hurt one of the friends.

• 56:59Speaker 01

They won't kill one of the friends.

• 57:00Dax Shepard?

No, they would say one of the hospital.

• 57:02Speaker 02

Who's gonna get hit by a cab?

• 57:03Speaker 01

Yes. And when you're like a teenager, you don't know what's gonna happen. Everything's scary.

• 57:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:08Speaker 01

People are gonna make fun of you, but this is a constant. I can't really explain how important it is with words, but I'm grateful.

• 57:15Speaker 02

I can feel that. I love that. I wish you could have come to a taping.

• 57:18Speaker 01

I had a recurring dream that you guys got back together and then I went to a taping. And so for a while I was like, I think I, I think I saw, I think, and then it was just a crazy dream.

• 57:31Speaker 02

You could have come to the reunion.

• 57:33Speaker 01

  That was here, right?

• 57:34Speaker 02

  You were here.

• 57:34Speaker 01

I was here. It was perfect. I didn't need to do that. And here we are.

• 57:38Dax Shepard?

We just were with somebody, Krista and I, and we were discussing this exact thing.

• 57:43Speaker 02

Obsessed with her show, by the way.

• 57:45Dax Shepard?

Oh, what a kiss. Have you ever seen a better kiss?

• 57:48Speaker 02

  No.

• 57:49Dax Shepard?

  On television?

• 57:49Speaker 02

  No.

• 57:50Dax Shepard?

I mean, maybe you had some, but I might have missed it.

• 57:52Speaker 02

No, none of us. I don't see anyone on the planet Earth. I also like, was it the putting down of the cups? And all of the, like, there's something just so beautiful. It was just this foreplay.

• 58:03Dax Shepard?

  It was a set piece.

• 58:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:04Dax Shepard?

Like, it was a kiss that was, actually, they took the time, they made it like a set piece. It built, built, built, built. I'm gonna fucking die if they don't kiss. They fucking kiss it and it's great. Yeah, it was so good.

• 58:15Speaker 01

I guess that's the show that's the closest to that feeling right now, which is like, it's probably gonna be okay.

• 58:20Speaker 02

It felt good. We needed that. I binged it. I don't binge things.

• 58:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:24Speaker 02

And I could not get, I'm also so happy for my friend Erin, Sarah as well. It's great. Happy for everybody.

• 58:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, they created a cultural phenomenon, their first time at bat. It's incredible.

• 58:34Speaker 02

  Thank her for that.

• 58:35Dax Shepard?

I only had one single question about your movie career, which is Bruce Almighty.

• 58:42Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 58:42Dax Shepard?

  Mega hit of a lifetime.

• 58:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:44Dax Shepard?

What is it like acting on the other side of Jim Carrey? Does it rattle your own sense of reality? And like, what is the experience? Cause he is pulling off something that is the most heightened we've ever seen. And he is landing it. I just can't really imagine what it's like being opposite of that.

• 59:02Speaker 02

He's a big kid at that point. It's quite enjoyable. You would think it's gonna be, you're like, what do I do? How do I keep up? We just had fun.

• 59:12Dax Shepard?

  Oh, good.

• 59:12Speaker 02

  We just volleyed.

• 59:13Dax Shepard?

And you never had the sense you were leaving your own tone?

• 59:17Speaker 02

No, because I was the grounding. He's sort of the whirling, that guy. Can't remember his name. Wasn't Bruce. Was it Bruce?

• 59:25Dax Shepard?

  It should be.

• 59:25Speaker 01

  I think it was.

• 59:26Dax Shepard?

  You would hope. Bruce Almighty.

• 59:28Speaker 02

  I hope. I really hope.

• 59:29Dax Shepard?

Like, I don't know either, but I'm doing reverse engineering.

• 59:32Speaker 02

It's not like God's name was Bruce. Oh, God.

• 59:34Speaker 01

Yeah, I think it was Bruce.

• 59:36Speaker 02

  Yes, Bruce.

• 59:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:37Speaker 02

When you say Bruce right now, it's like, why would you name a character Bruce?

• 59:40Dax Shepard?

He did not read as a Bruce.

• 59:41Speaker 02

No, he does read in my memory as Bruce.

• 59:45Dax Shepard?

No, he was Jim, probably, the whole time.

• 59:46Speaker 02

  He was Jim.

• 59:47Speaker 01

And then there was Evan Almighty, and that was Steve Carell. And so he must have been Evan if we're putting the pieces together.

• 59:53Speaker 02

  You're right.

• 59:53Dax Shepard?

It's even more proof that his name was Bruce.

• 59:56Speaker 02

  Sorry, Jim.

• 59:59Dax Shepard?

I did the math on this and I want people to think about this for one second. So I was reading this article that you were in and they had done the research. This is not my research and they had said cumulatively 2,000 tabloid covers. Like that's the total number of tabloid covers. And I did the math, which is-

• 1:00:19Speaker 02

  He loves math.

• 1:00:20Dax Shepard?

  I do, I love math.

• 1:00:21Speaker 02

  See, I failed, terrible.

• 1:00:22Dax Shepard?

Let me hold your hand and walk you into this math.

• 1:00:24Speaker 02

I needed you to help me and I'd be like, Ash, can you just figure this out?

• 1:00:28Dax Shepard?

I just asked for a washer and dryer. Was that financially?

• 1:00:32Dax Shepard?

Am I winning on this? Cause he got a Ferrari, I don't know what model number, but are they comparable?

• 1:00:37Speaker 02

I got a GE washer and dryer.

• 1:00:41Dax Shepard?

2,000 tabloid covers is a tabloid cover every single day for the next 5.47 years.

• 1:00:50Speaker 02

  I'm sorry, so sorry.

• 1:00:52Dax Shepard?

I just want people to think about what that experience would be, that there's a tabloid cover of you every day until 2030.

• 1:01:00Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm, yeah.

• 1:01:02Dax Shepard?

It's so out of this world bonkers.

• 1:01:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:06Dax Shepard?

And you said to that, when they hit you with that number, you said, yeah, I took it all very personally.

• 1:01:11Speaker 02

Of course I did. I don't know why. I mean, of course I know why, because I was a kid growing up. I'd look at those covers and I'd be like, really? Is that true?

• 1:01:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah, honey, Helen and a hair boy.

• 1:01:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:26Dax Shepard?

Wasn't there always like a hairy boy on those covers?

• 1:01:28Speaker 02

Yes, like all these like a Sasquatch kind of a thing?

• 1:01:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, maybe he's a monkey boy or he's-

• 1:01:33Speaker 02

  Yeah, something. That's so funny.

• 1:01:35Speaker 01

I think there's a generation now that doesn't understand tabloids.

• 1:01:39Speaker 02

  It's Instagram now.

• 1:01:40Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:01:41Speaker 02

I guess it's the internet, the way more people allowed access to participate in it.

• 1:01:45Dax Shepard?

Not only is the cover there, but then we get to hear what everyone's takeaway from the cover was.

• 1:01:49Speaker 02

It used to be that there would be a week or two weeks later that you'd open the first two pages and it would be letters from readers.

• 1:01:56Dax Shepard?

  Uh-huh.

• 1:01:57Speaker 02

Five little letters of what they thought. Someone would be like, nah, snark. And then there was one that was like, loved it, loved it. And I'm like, ew, hated, hated it. But there'd only be like a couple.

• 1:02:06Dax Shepard?

  It went through some filter.

• 1:02:08Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:02:08Dax Shepard?

Like they're not gonna let- Something insanely misogynistic land in that. Letters to the editor.

• 1:02:13Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:02:14Speaker 01

But in some ways it was worse because that's the only way people were getting this salacious information was the tablets. Now there's a new thing every 45 seconds. So like you could be in a article, but then tomorrow you're not going to be in an article. Something else is going to wash it away.

• 1:02:29Speaker 02

AI is going to come in and then it's not even you saying things.

• 1:02:33Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:02:33Dax Shepard?

Like there was a, there was a tabloid story about Chris and I that we were swingers. And I don't think people even remember that we were swingers.

• 1:02:39Speaker 02

  That's not true.

• 1:02:40Dax Shepard?

It's not true. We could perhaps, under the right circumstance, uh, you know.

• 1:02:45Speaker 01

You could send a letter and they can.

• 1:02:47Dax Shepard?

Have a very open dialogue about that. If the right participants presented themselves.

• 1:02:53Speaker 02

But see, that's such a headline that you go, that's so ridiculous.

• 1:02:56Speaker 01

  But yours were too.

• 1:02:58Speaker 02

Oh yeah. No, it's true. It's very true.

• 1:03:00Dax Shepard?

I don't know. Yours were more ridiculous. Did you ever consider, cause you have the leverage. I want to say, we are both so fucking grateful you're doing this. I think it's nothing but high risk for you. You don't need any press and we both really appreciate it.

• 1:03:15Speaker 01

  It's such an honor.

• 1:03:16Dax Shepard?

But did you ever consider, I'm just never going to do press again. I'm going to go act in things and they can pay me whatever reduced amount for not promoting it. If you had those debates with yourself?

• 1:03:27Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 1:03:28Dax Shepard?

  You have.

• 1:03:28Speaker 02

  Right?

• 1:03:30Speaker 02

All the time. All the time.

• 1:03:33Dax Shepard?

Says, don't fucking bring this up.

• 1:03:34Speaker 02

Because I actually love to go into a conversation with people.

• 1:03:38Dax Shepard?

  That's the sad part, right?

• 1:03:39Speaker 02

Yeah. I love it. I love this. I love watching you. I love listening to you. I enjoy it. I find it interesting. This is safe. Do I get nervous? Obviously that's just because I do.

• 1:03:49Dax Shepard?

Well, and you've been fucking burned beyond belief. Like you've earned some apprehension.

• 1:03:53Speaker 02

There's little things. There's things that get, even recently, something came out referring to a question that was asked about. The Met Ball. Why haven't you been to the Met Ball? The answer was simply, I don't know. It intimidates me.

• 1:04:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:07Speaker 02

It's not my thing. Period. That was all. But then elaborate answer was created out of it. Things will always get misconstrued. But I always go into a conversation, really happy to have the conversation. And it used to be even more so because I hadn't been burned. And when we say burned, it just means the writers doing their job to make it more interesting. I don't think they're intentionally trying to do something like-

• 1:04:31Speaker 01

  That's generous of you.

• 1:04:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's generous.

• 1:04:33Speaker 01

Cause they are. They're trying to get clicks. I mean, it is their job. It is how they get paid.

• 1:04:38Speaker 02

Also to make me sound a little more interesting than, no, I don't like it. I mean, you're like, that's the answer?

• 1:04:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:43Speaker 01

But what's the gossipy part of this? Like, that's what they want.

• 1:04:47Dax Shepard?

Did you ever go into Skye's places?

• 1:04:50Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:04:50Dax Shepard?

  You haven't?

• 1:04:51Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:04:52Dax Shepard?

  Have you ever considered that?

• 1:04:54Speaker 02

  Hat, glasses, scarves?

• 1:04:56Dax Shepard?

  That doesn't cut it, though.

• 1:04:57Speaker 02

No. You mean like when they put an actual mask on?

• 1:05:00Dax Shepard?

Well, so Mila and Ashton told me they bought a piece of shit car.

• 1:05:04Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:05:04Dax Shepard?

  Like a $1,200 car.

• 1:05:06Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:05:06Dax Shepard?

And they had masks and they'd send their real car out with a friend. They'd drive in the pop, and then they'd get in this fucking clunker and drive out. I was like, this is incredible.

• 1:05:15Speaker 02

And would they go out into the night or have a date night or something?

• 1:05:18Dax Shepard?

They just needed to leave their neighborhood and not get followed. And then I assumed the mask. I doubt they went to El Chorito.

• 1:05:24Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:05:25Dax Shepard?

And ate the whole meal with masks on.

• 1:05:26Speaker 02

Bummer that they didn't do that. I've done all sorts of things. I remember wanting to write a book called Stories From The Floorboard. Where I've been getting in the backseat of cars and just sort of maneuvering through and then switching out and getting to a different car. I've done that.

• 1:05:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Okay, I have a pitch for you. Would you like to go to Burning Man with me?

• 1:05:44Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:05:44Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:05:45Dax Shepard?

  Pitch over.

• 1:05:45Speaker 01

Correct answer. That is the correct answer.

• 1:05:48Speaker 02

I didn't hear the rest of the question. Sorry. Go on. Finish your question.

• 1:05:51Dax Shepard?

  I don't think it's worthwhile.

• 1:05:53Speaker 02

Wait, I want to die to hear the rest of it.

• 1:05:54Dax Shepard?

Because you can go to Burning Man in feathers. You could be an ostrich and I could be a donkey.

• 1:05:59Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:06:00Dax Shepard?

We could mill about and we could see all the art. You could be completely anonymous.

• 1:06:04Speaker 02

Yeah. And everybody else is just like on all sorts of drugs so they won't even know what's happening?

• 1:06:09Dax Shepard?

You get those street smarts, the- Walking home from Jackson Hole.

• 1:06:12Speaker 02

  Yes, that comes back.

• 1:06:15Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 1:06:16Speaker 02

Do you go to Burning Man?

• 1:06:17Dax Shepard?

No, but I want to. I think it's gonna be my New Year's resolution for 2026.

• 1:06:20Speaker 02

  Really?

• 1:06:20Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I have a lot of friends who I trust deeply and I value their

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

  Opinion.

• 1:06:25Dax Shepard?

  Opinion.

• 1:06:25Speaker 02

  And they loved it.

• 1:06:26Dax Shepard?

My friend Joy Bryant in particular, she's like, you can't miss it. If you're on planet Earth, you must go see this. She's like, the art is insane. The things that are happening are wild. You can kind of pick what experience you want. There's a lot of different camps you can be in and they vary in extremeness. So that's a thing I would love to see.

• 1:06:45Speaker 02

Why haven't you done it yet?

I don't think I had been pitched so full-heartedly by this very trusted source.

• 1:06:50Speaker 02

  I got you.

• 1:06:51Dax Shepard?

And now I'm like, yeah, you're damn right. I don't want to leave this planet without having seen that spectacle. Have I intrigued you at all?

• 1:06:58Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:06:58Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:06:59Speaker 02

Only because my friend group, my girls and their husbands have gone many times. They went 12, 15 years straight. So I've seen the photos. I've seen the videos. I've heard the stories and I just go, I just don't think I could.

• 1:07:12Speaker 01

  Not for me.

• 1:07:13Dax Shepard?

  That's fair.

• 1:07:14Speaker 02

  I also don't love crowds.

• 1:07:15Speaker 01

  Yes, understandably.

• 1:07:16Speaker 02

But since I was a kid, I don't like crowds. It's just, I don't know what that is.

• 1:07:20Speaker 01

Are you the type that can be peer pressured or are you like, I made my decision?

• 1:07:23Speaker 02

I'm pretty, no, cut and dry. I can think about it, but no, I would never be peer pressured.

• 1:07:28Speaker 01

  Okay, about the tabloids.

• 1:07:29Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 1:07:30Speaker 01

Because of all this and because everyone knew your business and there was a lot of public information, how do you feel about being pitied?

• 1:07:37Speaker 02

  Hated.

• 1:07:37Speaker 01

Yeah. There's been so much pity towards you over the years and it feels so unfair. It's like, she seems good.

• 1:07:45Speaker 02

I really dislike it a lot. Hate is such a strong word. It's exhausting.

• 1:07:50Dax Shepard?

That's my most hated, so you know. Like if someone pities me, like, so you think I'm weak? That's my number one.

• 1:07:55Speaker 02

  Being labeled the poor anything.

• 1:07:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:07:58Speaker 02

No point in even trying to rewrite it because that's just stuck.

• 1:08:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:02Dax Shepard?

That's the role they assigned you and that's what it is.

• 1:08:04Speaker 02

Probably. Not much to really undo that. And that's okay.

• 1:08:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:08:11Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

So, we talk a lot on this show about how the world is different now than when we were growing up. And one of the biggest differences is obviously social media. And I think a lot of people wonder, okay, what's actually being done to make it safer for teenagers?

• 1:09:22Speaker 01

  Which is a fair question.

• 1:09:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so Instagram has got something called teen accounts and they come with automatic protections built in by default. So, anyone between 13 and 17 is automatically placed into this experience. They get age-appropriate content settings, contact limits, so that by default, only people they're already connected to can message them. And time management tools, daily time limit reminders, and also sleep mode that mutes notifications from 10pm to 7am.

• 1:09:49Speaker 01

  Sleep mode is genius.

• 1:09:51Dax Shepard?

Right? And here's the thing, for anyone under 16, a parent has to give permission to change any of those settings to be less strict. The guardrails are on and Instagram keeps building new safety features to create age-appropriate experiences for teens.

• 1:10:06Speaker 01

I am really glad Instagram's helping to give parents peace of mind with teen accounts.

Episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. If you've thought about trying therapy with our long-term partner, BetterHelp, insurance options may now be available nationwide with an average copay for eligible members of just $23 per session. October 10th is World Mental Health Day, but you don't need a day on the calendar to give yourself permission to talk to someone. I've been in therapy for a long time and the stuff rattling around in my head always just quiets down the second I say it out loud. And it doesn't have to be some big life crisis. Maybe it's a work thing that's taking up too much space, or hard relationship moment, or just a feeling that something's off. That's enough. That's worth talking about.

• 1:10:56Speaker 01

You know, I love therapy more than anything. Gets me through. Often I'll want to cancel because I'm like, I don't really have anything to talk about. And then I'll go and I have some major revelation.

• 1:11:08Dax Shepard?

You know, I was just talking to a friend who has just started it. And I said, one of the most powerful elements of it is just hearing yourself say out loud, the thing that's been ruminating in your head and how different it sounds. Once it's out into the world, you gain perspective immediately just by hearing yourself say it.

• 1:11:23Speaker 01

  Yeah, you do.

• 1:11:23Dax Shepard?

If you've been waiting to start therapy, BetterHelp works with more than 125 health plan networks and eligible members have an average copay of just $23 per session with insurance. Don't have insurance or live outside the US? You can still get 10% off your first month. Do yourself a favor and just try it. Future you will be grateful. So Monica just informed me that she's a girl's girl and I nodded like I knew exactly what that meant.

• 1:12:00Speaker 01

Yeah, but the girls who get it, they get it.

• 1:12:03Dax Shepard?

Okay, but for those of us who are clearly not girls, walk me through it.

• 1:12:06Speaker 01

Well, you know how much I love my SKIMS fleece joggers because the plush fleece is so soft. It's cozy. It's really comfortable without feeling too heavy. Well, I went to friend them and she would not stop talking about how comfy they were. She almost didn't give them back to me, which was upsetting, but I'm a girl's girl. So I let her have it.

• 1:12:23Dax Shepard?

  Great, great, great.

• 1:12:25Speaker 01

So the sleep sets are awesome because they are very soft and comfortable. But they're cute. If I'm in my sleep set, I feel fine about going down the street to pick up my food. I'm still looking cute, but I'm comfy and I'm cozy.

• 1:12:38Dax Shepard?

  Roger.

• 1:12:39Speaker 01

A really fun thing to do is if you're going on vacation with your girlfriends to get matching Skims pajamas. I've done this with Callie and it is so fun. First of all, the pics are so cute, but also it's just fun and friendship.

• 1:12:52Dax Shepard?

So a girl's girl is looking out for your friends with better loungewear. I get it. Am I one of your girls now?

• 1:12:57Speaker 01

You are. You and the other girlies can shop my favorite loungewear and pajamas at skims.com. After you place your order, be sure to let them know we sent you. Select podcasts in the survey and be sure to select our show in the dropdown menu that follows.

• 1:13:17Dax Shepard?

So over the years, you took it really personal. Do you think you have transcended that or still a little bit? Like let's say at its height, it was a 10.

• 1:13:25Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. 10. I was just so upset. I mean, I would always take, how did this happen? Or how do we write it? Cause if they give you the heads up, you're like, that's just not true. At this point, I just don't pay attention and I realize it doesn't matter. We're still here. I love my work. I do my job. I have my gorgeous, stunning group of friends that know who I am. And that's all that really matters.

• 1:13:47Dax Shepard?

I like your group of friends. I was learning about your group of friends in my research.

• 1:13:50Speaker 02

A lot of crossovers in our group of friends.

• 1:13:51Dax Shepard?

We do have a lot of crossovers with the Batemans, Amanda, Jason.

• 1:13:54Speaker 02

  Jimmy Moll.

• 1:13:55Dax Shepard?

Jimmy Mollie. But the two I liked that I learned about was I admire Gwyneth Paltrow so much. I think she's such a badass. I just think she's so cool.

• 1:14:04Speaker 02

  She's the epitome of I don't care.

• 1:14:05Speaker 01

Yes, I love it so much.

• 1:14:07Speaker 02

Take a page out of her book. She's a really good person to look to for that sort of, who said it? Who cares?

• 1:14:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:14:13Speaker 02

  Ask yourself, is that true?

• 1:14:14Dax Shepard?

  Right, right.

• 1:14:15Speaker 02

Or even before they would say it, is it true? First thing I would say, is that actual fact?

• 1:14:20Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:14:20Speaker 02

No. So then what's the problem? The problem is this other part of my brain that so wants to be the get off.

• 1:14:27Speaker 01

  I know, I know.

• 1:14:28Speaker 02

  Those little two voices.

• 1:14:29Dax Shepard?

Well, I have the thing that'll trap me is I'm stubborn to the point where I like even the going to the Burning Man thing. It's like, I refuse to not be able to do the things I want to do.

• 1:14:38Speaker 02

Has that increased as you've? Gotten older.

• 1:14:40Dax Shepard?

I think it came out this way.

• 1:14:41Speaker 02

That way. Has that lessened at all? Have you sort of relaxed out of it in terms of I should not be so stubborn? I should be a little more flexible.

• 1:14:49Dax Shepard?

I've had to because I am in a family and I have these two little girls who have an opinion. They're stubborn as fuck. There's not enough room for another one of us to be stubborn. Chris is very stubborn. I'm very stubborn.

• 1:14:59Speaker 02

  Busy household.

• 1:15:00Dax Shepard?

And now we've got two other stubborn people in the house.

• 1:15:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:02Dax Shepard?

And so Chris and I think both were like, okay, well, one of the variables has to change in this equation. It's certainly not going to be these little kids. So I think that has definitely helped me get over some of it.

• 1:15:12Speaker 02

  What's your sign?

• 1:15:15Dax Shepard?

  Could you guess?

• 1:15:16Speaker 02

  I would say Taurus.

• 1:15:17Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:15:18Speaker 02

  Or Virgo.

• 1:15:20Dax Shepard?

  I'm Capricorn.

• 1:15:21Speaker 02

  Or Capricorn.

• 1:15:22Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:15:23Speaker 01

  He's very, very Capricorn.

• 1:15:25Dax Shepard?

  Two Capricorn, Monica might argue.

• 1:15:28Speaker 01

I didn't say that. Stop putting things on me.

• 1:15:30Speaker 02

  What are you?

• 1:15:31Speaker 01

  What do you think?

• 1:15:31Speaker 02

  I know. I feel like you're like a Pisces or a Gemini.

• 1:15:35Speaker 01

No, I am not water. I'm a Virgo.

• 1:15:38Speaker 02

  Virgo.

• 1:15:39Speaker 01

  I'm a double Virgo.

• 1:15:40Speaker 02

Double Virgo, particular. Are you, do you see things out of the corner of your eye? And you just want to move it?

• 1:15:46Speaker 01

Definitely. What are you? Oh, February.

• 1:15:48Speaker 02

  I'm like, I'm an Aquarian.

• 1:15:50Speaker 01

Ah, I think that's what my dad is. I've, we're talking about kids and this might be a no-no, but I'm curious.

• 1:15:57Speaker 02

Hit it. You can ask me anything.

• 1:15:58Speaker 01

Okay. I froze my eggs twice. It went very badly. I did a podcast about it. It was following the journey. It was a whole thing. And I'm 38 and I am single and I'm feeling like time to start making some big decisions. It's kind of feels like now or never ish to even try with some of those eggs. And I'm starting to just feel like I think it's never.

• 1:16:24Speaker 02

  And why?

• 1:16:26Speaker 01

  Because.

• 1:16:28Speaker 02

Can I ask you a bigger question?

• 1:16:29Speaker 01

  Yes, please.

• 1:16:29Speaker 02

Are you doing that, the freezing?

• 1:16:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:32Speaker 02

  Have you always wanted children?

• 1:16:34Speaker 01

  I've always not known.

• 1:16:37Speaker 02

  If you wanted them.

• 1:16:38Speaker 01

Yes. So it's not like, we had Chelsea on that podcast, Chelsea Handler, who I know we both love. And she's kind of always been like, no, I don't.

• 1:16:45Speaker 02

Very cut and dry. Nope. Not my thing.

• 1:16:47Speaker 01

I respected and I wish I had that because it's not that. It's very much like, oh, I'm very close with their kids. And it's like, oh, my God, to have one of these that's mine. You know, you get kind of wrapped up in it. But also, my life is also very full. What you just said about all your friends in your life, I have the same thing. So it kind of feels like, maybe it's okay that I don't. You've said you're on the other side of that. And I wonder if there's peace there.

• 1:17:11Speaker 02

Oh, it's so peaceful. But I will say, there's a point where it's like, out of my control. There's literally nothing I can do about it. When people say, but you can adopt. I don't want to adopt.

• 1:17:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:17:22Speaker 02

I want my own DNA in a little person.

• 1:17:25Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:17:25Speaker 02

That's the only, selfish or not, whatever that is. I wanted it. But is there the moments of, hmm, well, this goes around into, it's probably a topic I don't really want to discuss. But when you meet someone and you go, God, we would have made some good kids.

• 1:17:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:17:42Speaker 01

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:17:43Speaker 02

So that might come up and then that'll pass within three seconds.

• 1:17:46Speaker 01

  Right. Right.

• 1:17:47Speaker 02

And you're like, but I guess what?

• 1:17:49Dax Shepard?

You'll plan a trip to Mexico?

• 1:17:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:51Dax Shepard?

  You'll be on that trip.

• 1:17:52Speaker 02

Just take a look at that vacation for five minutes. And you're like, oh, good night. Bye. See you later. What are we gonna watch?

• 1:17:58Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:17:59Speaker 02

It's a romanticizing, but once you are on the other side of it, because it's out of your control.

• 1:18:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:04Speaker 02

Just wasn't in the plan. Whatever the plan was.

• 1:18:07Speaker 01

Exactly. I do think some people though, can't.

• 1:18:10Speaker 02

  Let it go.

• 1:18:10Speaker 01

Let it go. I worry, I guess. That would be me.

• 1:18:13Speaker 02

Come over and I'll help you let it go.

• 1:18:15Speaker 01

  Okay. I'll take that invite.

• 1:18:17Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:18:18Speaker 01

  It's a lot.

• 1:18:19Speaker 02

It is a lot. And by the way, it's very emotional, especially in the moment when they say, that's it. Because there is a weird moment when that happens.

• 1:18:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:18:26Speaker 02

It's getting too dark for this podcast.

• 1:18:27Speaker 01

  No, no, no.

• 1:18:28Speaker 02

There's a moment when it's actually, oh yeah, this is not even viable.

• 1:18:32Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:18:33Speaker 02

  So.

• 1:18:33Speaker 01

  Time is up.

• 1:18:34Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:18:35Dax Shepard?

That's probably a blessing and a curse. It probably hurts really bad. And then probably you move into acceptance mode and it probably is liberating on the other side.

• 1:18:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:18:43Dax Shepard?

Last personal question, and then we're going into morning show. How many dogs do you have?

• 1:18:47Speaker 02

  Two.

• 1:18:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay, that's nothing.

• 1:18:49Speaker 02

I had three. Well, I've had three at a time. And I have two. And then there might, you know, there's.

• 1:18:54Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And Claudio Takes a Bite Out of Life.

• 1:18:57Speaker 02

  Yeah, Claudio.

• 1:18:58Dax Shepard?

  Is a very cute book.

• 1:18:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:19:00Dax Shepard?

Yes. And it's about finding your passion in your program.

• 1:19:02Speaker 02

It's my contribution as a dog mom and a mother, whether dog, human, but to the children's book world.

• 1:19:09Dax Shepard?

I know you don't read anything, but I do hope you've seen.

• 1:19:12Speaker 02

  That book I can read.

• 1:19:16Dax Shepard?

Do you want me to read it to you at the beginning, man?

• 1:19:19Speaker 02

I can read book that's also coming out. That's really good about a neighborhood cat.

• 1:19:24Dax Shepard?

Wait, is it a forthcoming book?

• 1:19:25Speaker 02

It'll be the third. Yeah. Super cute.

• 1:19:27Dax Shepard?

I know you're not consuming what's out there in the world, but I kind of do hope the comments Bateman has made recently about your contribution to his kids' lives. I hope that filtered through to you.

• 1:19:41Speaker 01

So sweet. She said you're like a co-mom.

• 1:19:43Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:19:44Speaker 01

  Really beautiful.

• 1:19:45Speaker 02

It's the sweetest thing. And those kids were since that like. I know she's in my bikinis. Like really working them. And you're just like, oh my God. Why am I having an issue with this yet? Her first vacation, she was going on a trip to Italy with all these kids by themselves. And I was like, did they pack condoms? They both looked at me like, why? I'm like, are you kidding?

• 1:20:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, pull your hair out.

• 1:20:11Speaker 02

  In Italy?

• 1:20:12Speaker 01

  Bikini?

• 1:20:13Speaker 02

  Have you seen that?

• 1:20:16Speaker 01

Oh my God. It's because the kids are such an active reminder of time. It's so wild. Like it's easy as adults to forget that it's moving, but they don't let you forget.

• 1:20:27Speaker 02

No, and they can just chill out.

• 1:20:29Speaker 01

  I know. We'd love if they'd take a break.

• 1:20:31Speaker 02

Slow it down a little bit.

• 1:20:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:20:33Dax Shepard?

Pump the brakes just a bit.

• 1:20:34Speaker 02

  How old are yours?

• 1:20:35Dax Shepard?

  10 and 12.

• 1:20:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:36Dax Shepard?

Okay, Morning Show. Okay, season four of Morning Show.

• 1:20:40Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:20:41Dax Shepard?

I'm caught up. I'm waiting tomorrow. I'll get another installment. You're dealing with a tough one. You go to interview this athlete.

• 1:20:47Speaker 02

Oh, they were. You're the first episode. Yes.

• 1:20:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. And then the father puts in your hand this piece of paper that says, we want to defect. They're in town for the Olympics and you're like, I gotta help. How would you not? But you don't know that really he wants to defect because he's a nuclear engineer in Iran. So now this is a very big geopolitical.

• 1:21:04Speaker 02

That was a little bait and switch.

• 1:21:05Dax Shepard?

It was. He a little bit misled you.

• 1:21:07Speaker 02

Little bit of a mislead there.

• 1:21:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:21:10Speaker 02

Just goes to show you, pause and think about things.

• 1:21:13Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:21:14Speaker 02

  Before you just.

• 1:21:15Dax Shepard?

  Again, pump the brakes.

• 1:21:16Speaker 02

  Pump it.

• 1:21:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:17Speaker 02

Well, now wait till you see what happens.

• 1:21:19Speaker 01

  Oh, boy.

• 1:21:19Dax Shepard?

  I can't wait.

• 1:21:20Speaker 01

Oh, boy. This show's scary. It keeps predicting things that happen that are very bad.

• 1:21:25Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:21:26Dax Shepard?

  Which, what? Tell me.

• 1:21:27Speaker 01

All of it. Also, the space ladies it predicted.

• 1:21:30Speaker 02

  Oh, well, that was.

• 1:21:31Speaker 01

  That wasn't very bad.

• 1:21:32Speaker 02

That was the billionaire and their rocket ships. And then there was the crews with a mysterious virus. That was the end of the first season. I mean, there's all sorts of.

• 1:21:41Speaker 01

  There were others. I'm blanking.

• 1:21:42Dax Shepard?

Well, it rides this line of like, it's very much tackling the issues that are happening in pop culture.

• 1:21:49Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:21:49Dax Shepard?

And yet it's also fiction. And then so people are trying to connect dots that don't connect.

• 1:21:53Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:21:54Dax Shepard?

Which would kind of drive me nuts if I were you. Like, you were dating Jon Hamm and he was a billionaire who went to Rutgers. So people were like, oh, that's Elon Musk. And you're like, Mike, here to.

• 1:22:03Speaker 02

  And still it's not.

• 1:22:04Dax Shepard?

And then you've gone too far.

• 1:22:05Speaker 02

That's Jon Hamm playing a billionaire.

• 1:22:07Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:22:08Dax Shepard?

But your character, I mean, it's not hard at all to draw the parallel between you and the character in that you're an incredibly powerful woman and you are navigating still what is still a very male world.

• 1:22:22Speaker 02

Right. The challenges, being a woman in the very male dominated world and dealing with public perception, the private world that's going on behind the scenes.

• 1:22:31Dax Shepard?

The price that you can't help but pay.

• 1:22:34Speaker 02

Mm hmm. The drive to get what it is. You know you have the ability that you can do.

• 1:22:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:41Speaker 02

I am capable of this. Women are capable of this.

• 1:22:43Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:22:44Dax Shepard?

So when you've seen these scripts come in. Are you so excited and then like, yeah, I can't wait to shine a light on this? Or are you like, this is a little too close? I don't want it to be so me. What's that balance?

• 1:22:56Speaker 02

I don't look at it that way, actually. I do look at it in a way of women need to know that they are able to be in positions of power. It has happened and it will keep happening. And this is a version of that happening. Yeah. And I love to represent that as an idea that you can strive for.

• 1:23:12Dax Shepard?

I guess a better question would be, where are they parallel and where do they diverge?

• 1:23:16Speaker 02

I'm not as angry. I'm not as

• 1:23:18Dax Shepard?

  Cutthroat?

• 1:23:18Speaker 02

  fearless.

• 1:23:19Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 1:23:20Speaker 02

I don't think I am as cutthroat. There's a very alive and well people pleaser inside of me that would love to make more swings at some things than I do.

• 1:23:29Dax Shepard?

The other fun real life parallel is it's a show about two women. It's about two women who are both sharing power in a very finite vacuum of power that's available. And the show itself is a breakthrough in that you have you and Reese, who conventionally would only have your own show and probably be pitted against each other, deciding to come together and be like, no, no, there's room for both of us here and the pot's big enough for both of us. How did that come about?

• 1:23:58Speaker 02

We both believe that, that there's room for all of us.

• 1:24:02Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:24:02Speaker 02

Actresses should not be pitted against each other because there's opportunity and it's only increasing.

• 1:24:09Dax Shepard?

Forgive the example, but it's like Ocean's Eleven. No one said like, well, there's no way we can do it. They're all too big. How will we pay them all?

• 1:24:15Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:24:15Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:24:15Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 1:24:16Dax Shepard?

That was fine. We're like, oh, we'll figure it out because we want to see this.

• 1:24:19Speaker 02

And they did figure it out.

• 1:24:20Dax Shepard?

They figured it out a few times.

• 1:24:21Speaker 02

Remember what they did. They might've done it a couple of times.

• 1:24:24Speaker 01

Just one or two or three times.

• 1:24:26Speaker 02

I think there was only one female version of that.

• 1:24:28Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:24:29Speaker 02

  You haven't seen that again.

• 1:24:30Dax Shepard?

  Who approached who?

• 1:24:32Speaker 02

Michael Ellenberg approached us both with the book.

• 1:24:35Dax Shepard?

Were you friends prior to that?

• 1:24:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, she was on Friends.

• 1:24:38Speaker 02

  Friends.

• 1:24:39Dax Shepard?

Oh, I don't. Oh, no, I do know that because you guys interviewed each other.

• 1:24:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:24:43Dax Shepard?

It was a battle of the blue eyes. I was like, whose eyes are bluer in this interview? My fucking god.

• 1:24:48Speaker 02

Depending on who got the better light.

• 1:24:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:24:49Speaker 02

Hers are really beautiful, blue balls.

• 1:24:51Dax Shepard?

No one was suffering in the blue eyes department in that. It was like test your friendship. This is very telling.

• 1:24:57Speaker 02

Well, that's the other thing. We're friends. We know each other, but we don't wake up together.

• 1:25:01Speaker 01

  Right, right, right, right.

• 1:25:02Speaker 02

I'm not bringing her coffee in bed. It felt terrible.

• 1:25:05Speaker 01

  She doesn't even live here.

• 1:25:06Speaker 02

No, she really left all of us.

• 1:25:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, she abandoned everyone.

• 1:25:09Speaker 02

  She abandoned us.

• 1:25:10Dax Shepard?

  She's our neighbor now, actually.

• 1:25:11Speaker 02

  She is.

• 1:25:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, in Tennessee.

• 1:25:13Speaker 02

  See?

• 1:25:13Dax Shepard?

But she's a special gal, right? I love her.

• 1:25:16Speaker 02

She is a spitfire. She works harder than anyone.

• 1:25:19Dax Shepard?

She's Tracy Flick to some degree.

• 1:25:21Speaker 02

She's so Tracy Flick. She'll be the first one to say that. She is fearless. She will speak her mind. She's the sponge, for sure.

• 1:25:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, how are you guys yin and yangy?

• 1:25:31Speaker 02

She loves to read and learn and probably ace tests and work, work, work, work, work. And I want to go outside and lay in the sun and listen to a podcast, talk to a group of girlfriends, a group of friends, have a barbecue, talk about what's going on, listen to another podcast, and then go to work on Monday. I don't know if I could say I'm a little more laid back.

• 1:25:56Speaker 01

But we'll ask her. We'll see how they compare. It'll be interesting.

• 1:25:59Dax Shepard?

We're gonna talk to her in a couple of weeks.

• 1:26:00Speaker 02

  Oh, god.

• 1:26:01Dax Shepard?

We'll ask her. We'll see if this matches up.

• 1:26:03Speaker 01

  I'm sure she agrees.

• 1:26:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:26:04Speaker 01

You said that you know your value at work, though. You said, I know my value.

• 1:26:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:26:09Speaker 01

When it comes to career. Do you feel that about the other places in your life at this point?

• 1:26:14Speaker 02

  I do. I do.

• 1:26:16Dax Shepard?

Did you hear? She's like, I'm not going to fucking Burning Man with you. Easily that was it. She's like, fuck you. I don't give this her feelings. I don't know what fantasy you've cooked up where we're gonna go to Burning Man.

• 1:26:25Speaker 02

By the way, I'm psyched for you because you are gonna have a good time since you are dying to go.

• 1:26:29Dax Shepard?

I'm built for chaos. It arouses me.

• 1:26:31Speaker 02

  Okay, good.

• 1:26:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:32Speaker 02

Oh, did I say bring a medical kit?

• 1:26:34Dax Shepard?

  Someone will have one.

• 1:26:35Speaker 02

  You, no, they won't.

• 1:26:38Speaker 01

They're all on drugs, so they probably won't.

• 1:26:40Speaker 02

I'm not kidding. Please bring me.

• 1:26:41Dax Shepard?

They'll find it, but they won't be able to find it.

• 1:26:43Speaker 02

And a phone that you will know you can use, what do they call them?

• 1:26:46Dax Shepard?

Yeah, satellite phone. Thank you, satellite phone. Bring a sat phone, if that makes you feel safer.

• 1:26:51Speaker 02

That will make me feel much better.

• 1:26:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:26:52Speaker 02

Because I won't tell you the other stories of other friends.

• 1:26:55Dax Shepard?

Sure, a lot of things go down in that desert.

• 1:26:57Speaker 01

But I think it can be tricky, though, because if you have such a big career, you can say, well, maybe that's why some of these other things haven't worked out for me the way I want. I think that all the time. I'm like, well, I have this. So I won the lottery in this area, so maybe I don't get these other things. I don't think that's the smart way of thinking, but yeah, I wonder if you've experienced that.

• 1:27:14Speaker 02

Oh, sure. Knowing your value, it's kind of like you know what you know and you know what you don't know, right? I know where I excel. Are there parts of me that wish and want to be in some of these other areas of this business? Absolutely. Doing other kinds of movies? Absolutely. Working with certain other directors? Absolutely.

• 1:27:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:27:33Speaker 02

But I also find that to be the fun of still being excited about, like, I'm gonna go make that happen. You know, we're not done. We're not like, and this is where we coast now.

• 1:27:44Dax Shepard?

We had Jeanette McCurdy on to talk about I'm Glad My Mom's Dead.

• 1:27:48Speaker 02

Yeah, I'm glad my mom died, yeah.

• 1:27:49Dax Shepard?

I'm glad my mom died. I think it's a brave role to sign up for, is what I wanted to say.

• 1:27:53Speaker 02

Oh, yes. First of all, Jeanette is so lovely.

• 1:27:55Dax Shepard?

We fell so in love with her, it's crazy.

• 1:27:57Speaker 02

Isn't she just so funny and clever and smart?

• 1:27:59Speaker 01

  Oh, my God, so smart.

• 1:28:00Dax Shepard?

  She's unbelievably smart.

• 1:28:00Speaker 02

And the way she channeled that life into that book.

• 1:28:04Speaker 01

  So admirable.

• 1:28:05Speaker 02

And with that humor and sort of the wink in the midst of a lot of pain and suffering. So she's remarkable, and I can't wait to start playing that part. It's been almost two years now that we've had it, and I started prep end of the summer. So that's a character that gets me nervous.

• 1:28:21Dax Shepard?

Oh, yes. That's why I'm so excited about it. Like I said, it's a very, very brave.

• 1:28:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:28:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's out of the comfort zone.

• 1:28:27Speaker 02

If a job is making me nervous, it means it's something, obviously, that I know will challenge me. Not that the others aren't challenging. I mean, certain comedy is super fun, and I've done that for so long.

• 1:28:37Dax Shepard?

But it's okay that that's easier.

• 1:28:39Speaker 02

  Comes easier.

• 1:28:40Dax Shepard?

I've been practicing being a clown from the get-go.

• 1:28:43Speaker 02

Yeah, it was ourself. It's what helped us grow up without dying inside.

• 1:28:47Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes, yes.

• 1:28:49Speaker 02

Make people laugh. Then you're like, oh, bring joy. That's a good way to ease it, regulate, be happy. So playing that woman, because Jeanette's mom and my mom had some odd... Parallels. So it'll be cathartic in many, many ways. And we just couldn't believe the amount of stories that we had in common.

• 1:29:07Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:29:09Speaker 02

It's an important story to tell and it'll help a lot of young kids, just parents, adults and process life that they've lived.

• 1:29:16Dax Shepard?

Okay, I save this as the last thing I want to say to you because I don't think you're gonna take it well. I have to imagine you two have found yourself in these conversations. They're very fun. It's like you're sitting around with a bunch of other actors and cumulatively, we've met nearly everybody in the business. And you kind of go like, who's magic on screen that in real life is magic? Like you're working with the perfect example, which is Billy Crudup.

• 1:29:39Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:29:40Dax Shepard?

I'm like, oh, this motherfucker off screen? There's only one adjective for that guy. It's magic.

• 1:29:45Speaker 02

He is pure magic and committed because he really lives up to it. Like if you looked up thespian in the dictionary, you'd see Billy's face.

• 1:29:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:29:53Speaker 02

There's nothing that matters more to him than the work.

• 1:29:56Dax Shepard?

  For 10 years now.

• 1:29:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:29:58Dax Shepard?

Every time this conversation comes up, I always, always say, the person that just completely blew my mind is I thought Jennifer Aniston was hot on screen.

• 1:30:07Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 1:30:08Dax Shepard?

And then I saw her in real life and I was like, oh, my gosh, she's like the most beautiful person I've ever seen. I've said this 150 times. I think I've said it on here before.

• 1:30:18Speaker 02

  That's so sweet.

• 1:30:19Dax Shepard?

I just think you're so overwhelmingly beautiful in real life. You're my example. I always give 100% of the time.

• 1:30:26Speaker 02

Oh, my gosh. I don't even know what to say. I'm so blushy. My Mac to the couch now.

• 1:30:30Speaker 01

  You're blushy?

• 1:30:31Speaker 02

  That's so sweet.

• 1:30:32Speaker 01

I'm so, you're so humble because how many people have said that you are the most beautiful person? I mean, everyone says.

• 1:30:39Speaker 02

I don't think we ever look at ourselves and feel that way.

• 1:30:42Speaker 01

No, but that's interesting, though. I think that'd be interesting for people. You are still blushing hearing that.

• 1:30:49Speaker 02

Still blushing hearing that. You said Friends, you had a color coordinated thing. And I'm like, I want to cry. And I'm still going, what?

• 1:30:56Speaker 01

That means your ego is so correct. And it did not have to be. You could be so off on another planet. And I think most people in your position probably are.

• 1:31:07Dax Shepard?

You could have been like, no shit, dude. Get in line.

• 1:31:09Speaker 01

Yeah, you're like, yeah, says everybody.

• 1:31:11Speaker 02

  That's so nice. I agree.

• 1:31:14Speaker 01

I've been told before and I agree.

• 1:31:16Dax Shepard?

I've agreed with you about today.

• 1:31:18Speaker 02

I thought you were gonna say to me, who is the person? And I was like going like, oh my God.

• 1:31:23Dax Shepard?

No, but you and I had dinner.

• 1:31:24Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:31:24Dax Shepard?

  We know, we know.

• 1:31:26Speaker 02

I can't wait to have dinner with you again to tell you more.

• 1:31:28Dax Shepard?

  We know, we know.

• 1:31:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:31:31Dax Shepard?

And you'll forever be my example of like, well, I'll tell you who blew your fucking doors. I adore you. I'm so, so grateful you came.

• 1:31:37Speaker 02

  Thank you, Jack.

• 1:31:37Dax Shepard?

And I want to, of course, Monica.

• 1:31:39Speaker 01

  I'm so grateful.

• 1:31:40Speaker 02

Your letter moved me so much. I really did.

• 1:31:42Speaker 01

For the listener, I did send a love letter via Molly McNerney. Big shout out Molly.

• 1:31:47Speaker 02

  Yay, Molly.

• 1:31:48Speaker 01

  Love her so much.

• 1:31:49Speaker 02

  Love her so much.

• 1:31:49Speaker 01

And she did send it to you. And then I got an email from Steven the next day and it was right before my birthday.

• 1:31:54Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:31:55Speaker 01

And I was like, happy birthday to me. What a special, special thing.

• 1:31:58Speaker 02

I'm so glad that timing happened.

• 1:32:00Speaker 01

  I know. It was perfect.

• 1:32:01Dax Shepard?

Yeah, very fucking cool of you for reading Monty's letter and then coming. I think that's so sweet.

• 1:32:05Speaker 02

And you know, these are not my, I don't.

• 1:32:07Speaker 01

  You don't do them?

• 1:32:08Speaker 02

Well, I go, what do I have to talk about? I don't have nothing to say, but this was so fun.

• 1:32:13Dax Shepard?

  Oh, good.

• 1:32:14Speaker 02

  We had so much fun.

• 1:32:15Speaker 01

  It's so fun.

• 1:32:15Speaker 02

I felt like I had a really great conversation with two people I adore.

• 1:32:19Dax Shepard?

This was so wonderful. Everyone Watch Morning Show is out currently. It's on Apple TV+ It goes to November 19th. So if you're not caught up, binge. And I adore you. Thanks for coming.

• 1:32:29Speaker 02

I adore you too. Thank you. So fun.

• 1:32:33Dax Shepard?

I sure hope there weren't any mistakes in that episode, but we'll find out when my mom, Mrs. Monica, comes in and tells us what was wrong.

• 1:32:41Speaker 01

  New merch coming.

• 1:32:43Dax Shepard?

  Well, you're already in it.

• 1:32:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:45Dax Shepard?

  Limited dish.

• 1:32:46Speaker 01

But what I really, so we're working with a new like company and it's really good quality.

• 1:32:51Dax Shepard?

You're liking the quality a lot.

• 1:32:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:53Dax Shepard?

I can't wait to pop some on.

• 1:32:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:55Dax Shepard?

Uh, is that the only color it comes in?

• 1:32:57Speaker 01

This one, yeah, but we have other stuff too.

• 1:33:00Dax Shepard?

Great. And you got some enormous stonewashed jeans on with patchwork.

• 1:33:05Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:33:06Dax Shepard?

I think those are new. I haven't seen those yet.

• 1:33:08Speaker 01

  I've worn them.

• 1:33:08Dax Shepard?

  What?

• 1:33:09Speaker 01

  I've worn them.

• 1:33:09Dax Shepard?

To this show? I mean, you've worn them in real life.

• 1:33:12Speaker 01

I think I've worn them to this show.

• 1:33:15Speaker 01

I have to reply, I sometimes have to wear the same clothes twice, you know?

• 1:33:19Dax Shepard?

Sometimes, yeah, yeah, we're on different trajectories. Like, I, I put on a pair of pants and I wear them for about eight days.

• 1:33:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, sure.

• 1:33:28Dax Shepard?

  And then I switch pants.

• 1:33:30Speaker 01

Now, do they start to smell?

• 1:33:31Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:33:32Speaker 01

  You sure?

• 1:33:32Dax Shepard?

  The smell of them.

• 1:33:34Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:33:34Dax Shepard?

  All right.

• 1:33:35Speaker 01

How many days have you worn those?

• 1:33:37Dax Shepard?

Well, to be fair, I washed these when we got back to Nashville after our motorcycle trip. Because I was about to say these have a thousand miles of open air road on them.

• 1:33:46Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:33:46Dax Shepard?

But I did wash them a few days ago.

• 1:33:48Speaker 01

And did you travel in them yesterday?

• 1:33:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:50Speaker 01

  All right.

• 1:33:51Dax Shepard?

  All right.

• 1:33:58Speaker 01

  Pew.

• 1:33:58Dax Shepard?

  Oh, come on now.

• 1:34:00Speaker 01

  I'm just kidding.

• 1:34:01Dax Shepard?

  There's no way.

• 1:34:02Speaker 01

  They don't smell.

• 1:34:03Dax Shepard?

They don't smell. I did have my prostate examined this morning.

• 1:34:07Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:34:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:10Speaker 01

  What happened?

• 1:34:11Dax Shepard?

Well, I wasn't expecting this, but I had a follow-up appointment with my primary caregiver.

• 1:34:17Speaker 01

  Internist.

• 1:34:18Dax Shepard?

My internist, that's right. And I thought I was just going to chat and then I gave some more blood and some more yawn. And then he said, okay, why don't you drop your slacks and turn on your side?

• 1:34:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:31Dax Shepard?

I want to feel your prostate.

• 1:34:33Speaker 01

And did you say, I know you want to, but do you need to?

• 1:34:37Dax Shepard?

  No, I just comply.

• 1:34:38Speaker 01

Oh, my God, you never do that.

• 1:34:40Dax Shepard?

Well, at the doctor, I tend to.

• 1:34:41Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:34:42Dax Shepard?

Although that's not true, no, because he wanted me to get a flu vaccine. I said, no, thanks. But then he said, what about the pneumonoma, coccama, uh, pneumonia vax? And I said, sure, I'll take that one.

• 1:34:52Speaker 01

  Pneumonia, yeah.

• 1:34:53Dax Shepard?

  The nunococcal.

• 1:34:54Speaker 01

  Pneumococcal pneumonia.

• 1:34:55Dax Shepard?

  Munoc.

• 1:34:56Speaker 01

  Pneumococcal.

• 1:34:57Dax Shepard?

  Pneumococcal, guys, why?

• 1:35:00Speaker 01

I know. Not everyone has a hard time with it, though.

• 1:35:03Dax Shepard?

But Hilly and I were just lamenting about this. Why do all these prescriptions have to have an X, a J, a Z? It's like they're going out of their way to make it difficult. Pneumococcal pneumonia?

• 1:35:16Speaker 01

  I think it's fun. It's like alliteration.

• 1:35:18Dax Shepard?

Okay, okay. It seems excessively hard for no reason.

• 1:35:22Speaker 01

  It is a lot.

• 1:35:23Dax Shepard?

What's the goal? To let people know what it is? Or to like flex with how many letters you can put in that name?

• 1:35:29Speaker 01

I don't think it has to be about letting people know what it is. Maybe it's Latin and stuff.

• 1:35:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:35:35Speaker 01

  Anyway, back to your problem.

• 1:35:37Dax Shepard?

Anyways, okay, so, yeah, so I did pee. I did give blood. Then he, he went in there and, um, I mean, I had anxiety, but not for the reason you might think. What do you think my anxiety was?

• 1:35:50Speaker 01

  During the exam?

• 1:35:51Dax Shepard?

  Him putting his finger.

• 1:35:52Speaker 01

  Poop?

• 1:35:53Dax Shepard?

Yes, like I had gone this morning, but it was not what I wanted. Cause I had.

• 1:35:58Speaker 01

So he puts his finger up there?

• 1:36:01Dax Shepard?

Of course. What else is he gonna feel my prostate?

• 1:36:04Speaker 01

I don't know, tools or something.

• 1:36:05Dax Shepard?

But he didn't even ask me like, have you had a movement or anything? He just, I guess, assumed I had.

• 1:36:10Speaker 01

You shouldn't assume. Some people don't have regular movement.

• 1:36:14Dax Shepard?

No. And again, I didn't have like what I would call a completely satisfactory movement this morning. Anyways, he went in there. I guess there was no obstructions. And he said that my prostate felt tiny and healthy.

• 1:36:27Speaker 01

  Oh, great. Tiny. Hmm.

• 1:36:30Dax Shepard?

Hmm. Generally, that's not a good descriptor, but in this case it is. Yeah.

• 1:36:35Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:36:36Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:36:37Speaker 01

I just feel like there should be a way to do that without having to stick your finger in there.

• 1:36:43Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 1:36:44Speaker 01

  Like in 2025.

• 1:36:46Dax Shepard?

Although some part of me is like, I love how old school it is. Sometimes it's as old fashioned as that. His finger, my prostate, yep, that's the right size.

• 1:36:54Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:36:55Dax Shepard?

Which I trust more than a gizmo.

• 1:36:57Speaker 01

  What's a gizmo?

• 1:36:58Dax Shepard?

Oh, like an ultrasound that looked through.

• 1:37:00Speaker 01

I trust that. Then you have the actual image and it can probably.

• 1:37:04Dax Shepard?

  Be measured?

• 1:37:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:06Speaker 01

Just based off his little finger. What if his finger, it's like.

• 1:37:09Dax Shepard?

If his finger was enlarged and my prostate just felt small?

• 1:37:12Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:14Dax Shepard?

  Relative to his.

• 1:37:15Speaker 01

Wow. Do you feel? Violated today?

• 1:37:17Dax Shepard?

No, it was, it was fine.

• 1:37:19Speaker 01

  Okay, that's good.

• 1:37:21Dax Shepard?

And then they, he gives you some tissues to wipe your butt with afterwards. Cause there's a lot of jelly.

• 1:37:26Speaker 01

  Oh, jelly.

• 1:37:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah, not just like a random butt wipe. But it's, it's an emasculating or something experience to wipe your butt on the side of the table.

• 1:37:35Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:37:38Dax Shepard?

You know, it's, it's very vulnerable.

• 1:37:42Speaker 01

  That image is rough.

• 1:37:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, wiping on my side. I felt like a prostitute, it just like, you know, like I was gathering myself up.

• 1:37:48Speaker 01

  Sex worker.

• 1:37:49Dax Shepard?

No, I felt like a prostitute. I'm not calling other sex workers.

• 1:37:53Speaker 01

  Sex workers have respect.

• 1:37:54Dax Shepard?

I felt like a prostitute from the eighties.

• 1:37:56Speaker 01

  Okay, wow.

• 1:37:59Dax Shepard?

  Back when they were prostitutes.

• 1:38:00Speaker 01

Did you look at the tissues?

• 1:38:02Dax Shepard?

It was clean as hell, thank god.

• 1:38:03Speaker 01

  But you were worried.

• 1:38:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, just you're wiping your butt in front of a doctor.

• 1:38:07Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:38:09Dax Shepard?

I know, I'm glad you're having the same reaction I have.

• 1:38:11Speaker 01

He should leave so that you can wipe.

• 1:38:13Dax Shepard?

I'll let you, I'm gonna step out while you wipe.

• 1:38:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:16Dax Shepard?

  That's crazy too.

• 1:38:17Speaker 01

No, it's not, it's here, you can wipe, I'm gonna go do some.

• 1:38:20Dax Shepard?

No one should be wiping in, out, away from a toilet is what the issue for me is.

• 1:38:25Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:38:25Dax Shepard?

  Wiping happens on a toilet.

• 1:38:28Speaker 01

  You're right.

• 1:38:28Dax Shepard?

Not like, I'm gonna bring you to the lobby wipe, or I'm gonna bring you to this closet wipe.

• 1:38:33Speaker 01

Lobby, no, he goes to do some, quote, paperwork while you clean up.

• 1:38:37Dax Shepard?

Paperwork. So anyways, I think that's all good, that's positives.

• 1:38:42Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:38:43Dax Shepard?

That prostate was the normal size.

• 1:38:44Speaker 01

Well, actually, I think it's kinda nice that they give you the tissue because when you get, um, like a pap smear.

• 1:38:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:50Speaker 01

They, or when like I got my eggs frozen, they like, you do a lot of ultra, internal ultrasounds.

• 1:38:57Dax Shepard?

And they lube the hell out of that?

• 1:38:58Speaker 01

Yes, and then you don't get tissue and so it's all like gooey.

• 1:39:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's a jelly too.

• 1:39:04Speaker 01

Yeah, it feels so weird in your underwear.

• 1:39:08Speaker 01

  It does.

• 1:39:09Dax Shepard?

  In your underwear.

• 1:39:11Speaker 01

  It does.

• 1:39:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:12Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:39:13Dax Shepard?

  Wowzers.

• 1:39:14Speaker 01

Oh my, okay, you've had quite a morning.

• 1:39:16Dax Shepard?

I've had quite a couple of weeks, but today is my last day of antibiotics, which

• 1:39:20Speaker 01

  Oh, that's good.

• 1:39:21Dax Shepard?

  I'm delighted about.

• 1:39:22Speaker 01

  Okay, cool. Speaking of fingers.

• 1:39:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:26Speaker 01

  I had another hand injury.

• 1:39:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh, no, what happened?

• 1:39:30Speaker 01

It's not as exciting as my other ones.

• 1:39:32Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:39:33Speaker 01

But weirdly, okay, so I get a flower delivery every two weeks. It's like the highlight of my month.

• 1:39:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:41Speaker 01

  It's so exciting.

• 1:39:43Dax Shepard?

  Twice a month.

• 1:39:43Speaker 01

Yeah, yeah, I have two highlights and it's really exciting.

• 1:39:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:47Speaker 01

  And they came.

• 1:39:49Dax Shepard?

  How long do they last?

• 1:39:50Speaker 01

So depends on the flower, normally a week, but I think these are gonna get me a little longer.

• 1:39:56Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:39:56Speaker 01

Because the stem is like wood.

• 1:40:00Dax Shepard?

  Okay, it's a branch.

• 1:40:02Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's more branch like.

• 1:40:03Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:40:04Speaker 01

And that's good, but also, so you're supposed to cut the ends of all the stems, you know, before you put them in water and stuff.

• 1:40:10Dax Shepard?

So that they'll leach up the water.

• 1:40:12Speaker 01

Yes, and cutting the branches is harder than cutting regular flowers.

• 1:40:17Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:40:18Speaker 01

  And I have special scissors.

• 1:40:19Dax Shepard?

  Hacksaw or?

• 1:40:20Speaker 01

Well, I probably should have because I was using my scissors and like, you know, it was like really hard to cut.

• 1:40:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, you need pruning shears.

• 1:40:28Speaker 01

  I have, I have.

• 1:40:31Dax Shepard?

  Pruning?

• 1:40:31Speaker 01

Flower ones that are sharper than regular scissors, but they're not for wood, I don't.

• 1:40:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, right.

• 1:40:37Speaker 01

Anyway, and I was like squeezing really hard and then all of a sudden I was like, oh, my finger hurts. And I looked and I had this huge hole in my finger and it had a bunch of wood in it.

• 1:40:49Dax Shepard?

Oh, you poke, you, you poked yourself with the wooden branch?

• 1:40:52Speaker 01

I guess, but it was so deep.

• 1:40:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, puncture. My mother always said punctures are the worst.

• 1:40:59Speaker 01

  Oh, she's right.

• 1:41:00Dax Shepard?

  She would know.

• 1:41:01Speaker 01

Because she's right, because I, you know, yesterday I realized there's still some wood in there, so I got some out, some more out. But you can see, it looks better today.

• 1:41:14Dax Shepard?

  Oh, up, up top.

• 1:41:16Speaker 01

  Yeah, here.

• 1:41:16Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah, that's legit. That's a puncture. My mother would agree. That's the worst.

• 1:41:21Speaker 01

I hate the way it looks.

• 1:41:23Dax Shepard?

And then you're liable to get an infection with a puncture.

• 1:41:26Speaker 01

I know. So I put Neosporin and stuff on it, but, but I didn't do a great job getting, I didn't know what happened. I, I didn't know if I like punctured with the scissors or I punctured with the wood or both or something. I still don't know.

• 1:41:41Dax Shepard?

Let me ask you, did your, your grandfather, did he, would he just start bleeding out of his hands all the time? Did you notice that?

• 1:41:48Speaker 01

No, he wasn't like, what do they call those demons?

• 1:41:51Dax Shepard?

  No, no, um, um.

• 1:41:54Speaker 01

  Stigmata?

• 1:41:55Dax Shepard?

Stigmata, yeah, no, not that. Rob, did your grandpa's hands bleed a lot?

• 1:41:59Speaker 05

  I mean, I guess a little bit.

• 1:42:02Speaker 01

  What are you talking about?

• 1:42:03Dax Shepard?

I'll tell you what I'm talking about. When you're a man and you get old, your, your skin gets thin.

• 1:42:08Speaker 01

  Oh, you mean dry?

• 1:42:10Dax Shepard?

And no, and you just like, you bump nothing. Like my Papa Bob was always driving with a paper towel wrapped around his hand. Cause he had like scuffed it on nothing and then it's just gushing blood.

• 1:42:19Speaker 05

That's how my dad is now.

• 1:42:21Dax Shepard?

  Your dad's currently that way?

• 1:42:22Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 1:42:22Dax Shepard?

Well, Erin and I have been, we've both been noticing that we're heading in that direction where it's just like, I always have six or seven cuts on my hands and it's not like, I'm not a machinist. I'm not welding.

• 1:42:34Speaker 01

Are you using lotion? I think part of it is dry, cause then it cracks.

• 1:42:39Dax Shepard?

It's not, dry's not the issue.

• 1:42:40Speaker 01

I can't wait for a dermatologist to weigh in.

• 1:42:42Dax Shepard?

Oh, well, yeah, and I encourage them to, I invite them to. But when Erin and I were theorizing, also I have a tremendous blister from riding motorcycles.

• 1:42:50Speaker 01

Stop trying to see my thunder.

• 1:42:52Dax Shepard?

  I'm sorry.

• 1:42:53Speaker 01

I am the one with the finger issue.

• 1:42:55Dax Shepard?

  Okay, okay.

• 1:42:56Speaker 01

  Okay, go on.

• 1:42:57Dax Shepard?

Well, no, I can just leave it.

• 1:42:58Speaker 01

No, I want to hear about that. I just want to hear about the blister.

• 1:43:01Dax Shepard?

Okay, well, the blister is what's hurting right now, currently, which reminded me.

• 1:43:04Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:43:05Dax Shepard?

  Anyways.

• 1:43:06Speaker 01

I guess it's okay that you talk about the blister because as we learned, it's not as bad as a puncture.

• 1:43:10Dax Shepard?

  Punctures are the worst.

• 1:43:11Speaker 01

  Okay, cause you're mom.

• 1:43:14Dax Shepard?

But we were, we were theorizing, like, let's say that all of this.

• 1:43:19Dax Shepard?

Medical technology is heading where we think it's heading and that we're gonna live to 165, right? Peptides and stuff.

• 1:43:26Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:43:26Dax Shepard?

How thin is the skin gonna be? Like, sure, your organs might be good and you might be living, but we were just imagining us at 120, just kind of be like a sieve of leaky blood everywhere.

• 1:43:37Speaker 01

  Ew.

• 1:43:38Dax Shepard?

Just because your skin, what if they figure everything out except for that your skin's getting thinner and that you're just, you're, you can jog and climb a mountain, but you're gonna bleed a lot. You're gonna be wrapped in a lot of gauze.

• 1:43:52Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:43:53Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So that's like, people aren't predicting that outcome, but I'm, I'm, I'm theorizing that could be where we're headed.

• 1:43:59Speaker 01

I feel like they already have, you know, skin firming serums and moisturizers and things. Women have been dealing with thin skin for a long time on their neck and yes, your hands and your face and fine lines. So I feel.

• 1:44:15Dax Shepard?

But is there a skin thickener, a pachydermer?

• 1:44:18Speaker 01

  I mean, like.

• 1:44:20Dax Shepard?

That's what we need to do.

• 1:44:21Speaker 01

  They'll sell you on that.

• 1:44:22Dax Shepard?

We need to splice in just a little bit of elephant DNA because they're a pachyderm.

• 1:44:29Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:44:30Dax Shepard?

  We'll see pachydermis.

• 1:44:31Speaker 01

  And a hippopotamus.

• 1:44:32Dax Shepard?

And a hippopotamus and a rhinoceros.

• 1:44:34Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:44:34Dax Shepard?

  Pachyderms.

• 1:44:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:44:36Dax Shepard?

We just need a little bit of their.

• 1:44:38Speaker 01

  DNA.

• 1:44:39Dax Shepard?

An infusion of their DNA when you hit 130 and that'll really thicken up the skin.

• 1:44:44Speaker 01

I mean, as long as it doesn't hurt them, I think it's fine. I mean.

• 1:44:48Dax Shepard?

Well, they're dumping DNA all over the spot, right? They're just walking it shedding off. Just gather that.

• 1:44:54Speaker 01

Yeah, gather that. Cause I mean, we're already doing salmon sperm facials and stuff. So it feels like this is soon.

• 1:45:01Dax Shepard?

This, yeah, is around the corner.

• 1:45:04Speaker 01

But it's just, you know, elephants have such good memories that.

• 1:45:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:10Speaker 01

I don't want, what if it has like a reverse, what if it has a side effect that like now our memories.

• 1:45:16Dax Shepard?

  Are even better?

• 1:45:17Speaker 01

Yeah, but in a bad way. Like you only remember the bad stuff.

• 1:45:20Dax Shepard?

Isn't that already what you all are?

• 1:45:22Speaker 01

Exactly. So I feel like I don't want more. Actually, that's not true. I remember the good stuff.

• 1:45:28Dax Shepard?

I do too, but I was having a moment, I think, because we were riding in North Carolina. And the whole reason I even know about Asheville.

• 1:45:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:45:36Dax Shepard?

Is because I had a stepdad whose parents had retired there. And we went there for a few days on our way to somewhere else and I fell in love with it. I went to the Piggies ice cream place, all you can eat, you know, the shirt. And I just fell in love and went to Biltmore, set off the alarms, but it's all stemming from Looking Glass, Folsom, and Rock. It's all from that trip. So of course, while I'm riding through there, I'm thinking, how ironic that I really have him to thank for my, my love for. And then I was like, cause I'm currently writing about him. I was also thinking like, how completely unfair your memory is, my memory at least, is to people who I don't like.

• 1:46:18Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:46:18Dax Shepard?

Because all I've held on to is like the 40 things, the 40 events that made me come to that decision that I don't like that person. And even if I added up the length of all 40 of those events, I don't know, we'd be talking about three days or four days out of several years with this person, who for sure, the majority of time was innocuous at worst, just like present, but nothing's wrong. And then probably more often, they were really nice and to me, and maybe even funny.

• 1:46:55Speaker 01

  Do you remember that?

• 1:46:56Dax Shepard?

  I don't.

• 1:46:57Speaker 01

So are you sure it's real, though?

• 1:46:59Dax Shepard?

Well, it has to be, right?

• 1:47:01Speaker 01

  No. I don't think so.

• 1:47:03Dax Shepard?

  You don't think so?

• 1:47:03Speaker 01

I mean, I don't know which one you're talking about.

• 1:47:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:07Speaker 01

  But.

• 1:47:07Dax Shepard?

Well, you kind of do because.

• 1:47:09Speaker 01

  The controlling one.

• 1:47:10Dax Shepard?

Well, just, I can't, I don't want to get sued, but the dead ones I can talk.

• 1:47:15Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, we love, one of the dead ones is wonderful.

• 1:47:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, Barton, yeah. Three of my four dads are dead.

• 1:47:26Speaker 01

  Oh, I hated that sentence.

• 1:47:30Speaker 01

I have a lot of dads myself, as you know.

• 1:47:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:33Speaker 01

  They're all.

• 1:47:34Dax Shepard?

They're all alive. Yeah, yeah. Let's just put it this, like, no one's one note. No one's good or, they're not bad. He's not evil or good. There were all these things that made me go, I don't like this person.

• 1:47:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:47Dax Shepard?

I'll tell you the side note to that. As I've written about him and I read it back.

• 1:47:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:53Dax Shepard?

Cause I read this section to my kids and then my mom. I mean, it's a description of me. It's insane what a description.

• 1:48:01Speaker 01

Oh, no wonder. Now you're like, he was so funny.

• 1:48:04Dax Shepard?

No, no, no, no, no. It's not any self preservation. In fact, I'm just owning the fact that like, I'm reading this as like, yeah, oh my, that's me too. I mean, this could easily be a description of me, which is really interesting to synthesize.

• 1:48:20Speaker 01

Interesting. Now, when you do that, when you have that realization, which I think that's a great realization and in good self-awareness.

• 1:48:33Speaker 01

Do you think like, oh, fuck, like I then need to try not to do that because that was pretty, that was pretty unbearable.

• 1:48:42Dax Shepard?

Well, I've already had that reaction and I've even shared about it on here. Years ago, I've, I've gone like, I gotta shut up about this thing. It's like living with so and so. Like I've already had that awareness.

• 1:48:54Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:48:55Dax Shepard?

But when I just go through the actual, like the description of like, he was so type A, he was so routine. He was like, ran marathons, psychotically fitness, raced motorcycles, drove too aggressively. God infuses people everywhere he went. Um, it's really funny. And then of course, in my mind, there's some difference because I think my spirit is kinder and more loving.

• 1:49:19Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:49:19Dax Shepard?

But just on paper, again, and that's what helped me look at like, well, I've listed some qualities about him. And then you could list those about me, but also my kids might choose to list that I'm really patient and generous or whatever, you know, a whole other suite of behaviors.

• 1:49:36Speaker 01

Yeah. Don't you think also though, I've been thinking about this a lot, like people, I think especially actually, people like him, I mean, I don't, I never met him.

• 1:49:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:49:48Speaker 01

  I probably won't.

• 1:49:49Dax Shepard?

  You wouldn't like him.

• 1:49:50Speaker 01

  Right. I have a sense.

• 1:49:52Dax Shepard?

He wasn't playful and fun. He was rigid.

• 1:49:56Speaker 01

And mean, like being mean, like it's, I think it's nice of what you're doing. You're trying to lend some generosity and compassion and understanding and like, yes, no one is one thing.

• 1:50:08Dax Shepard?

And acknowledging the subjectivity of my memory.

• 1:50:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:10Dax Shepard?

Which is like, I've held under the things that reinforce this opinion I have of this person and I've really let go, I'm sure he bought me ice cream a million times that I don't remember one time.

• 1:50:19Speaker 01

But like buying ice cream doesn't make up for horrible stuff. I guess that's sort of, it's like, okay, yeah, there are good moments, great, but like, cause obviously your mom wouldn't have married him if it was all bad moments. That's how all of this happens, right?

• 1:50:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:50:34Speaker 01

And then, but it doesn't justify beating her up or being so controlling. Everyone's walking on eggshells and wants to die.

• 1:50:43Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:50:44Speaker 01

  Like, you know?

• 1:50:46Dax Shepard?

And I guess my other layer of compassion in writing about him is like, he suffered the most from this personality type. Again, how mad can I be at someone when they're like, he was paying the price of this intensity?

• 1:50:59Speaker 01

Yeah, you don't have to, you don't have to hold anger.

• 1:51:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:03Speaker 01

But you can still have understanding that like, it was good you guys weren't around that for much longer. Cause like, that was not a tenable environment.

• 1:51:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:12Speaker 01

And it does suck for him. It sucks that he has to live in that brain. Like, that's really, really hard.

• 1:51:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's the thing. I guess if he was like, if he was loving life and we were the victims of that, I think I'd have one opinion of it.

• 1:51:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:25Dax Shepard?

But I think I'm old enough now to go like, he's a pretty unhappy person that couldn't figure out how to be and jive with the world around him.

• 1:51:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:34Dax Shepard?

And, um, and then he paid the price and we paid the price.

• 1:51:37Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly. Everyone gets hurt.

• 1:51:39Dax Shepard?

And that's kind of like humanness.

• 1:51:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is.

• 1:51:51Dax Shepard?

• 1:53:04Speaker 01

Speaking of this, a great transition.

• 1:53:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh, great.

• 1:53:07Speaker 01

Um, without, I hope it's not spoiler. Um, so Beth's dad's coming on October 30th.

• 1:53:13Dax Shepard?

Yes, how is there a billboard on?

• 1:53:15Speaker 01

Yeah, New York, Patreon put up a billboard.

• 1:53:17Dax Shepard?

Oh, Patreon did that. I'm like, did Monica buy a billboard?

• 1:53:21Speaker 01

No, I didn't. Patreon did. It was so cool.

• 1:53:24Dax Shepard?

  Oh, very.

• 1:53:25Speaker 01

Okay, so a week from today, which I guess will be, um, the 27th.

• 1:53:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:53:33Speaker 01

October 27th, Elizabeth, Andy and I are gonna do a live stream on Patreon. Nope, I'm sorry, on the 26th, Sunday.

• 1:53:41Dax Shepard?

  Better get the date right.

• 1:53:43Speaker 01

  Sunday?

• 1:53:44Dax Shepard?

  If it's a live stream.

• 1:53:46Speaker 01

  Sunday.

• 1:53:47Dax Shepard?

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday. We'll sell you the whole seat. You'll only need the edge.

• 1:53:50Speaker 01

Exactly. Sunday, the 26th at 3:00 PM PST. That's 6:00 PM, East Coast, 5:00 PM, Nashville.

• 1:54:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:02Speaker 01

  And that-

• 1:54:03Dax Shepard?

  4:00 PM, Mountain.

• 1:54:05Speaker 01

If you're in Mountain, don't listen. I'm just kidding. Come, please come, please come to livestream.

• 1:54:10Dax Shepard?

But listen to it at 3pm Pacific, not 4pm Mountain.

• 1:54:14Speaker 01

Just get the day. It will put some stuff up. You can find it, but on paid, on our Patreon, Bethstead Patreon, we're gonna do a livestream so you can chat with us, ask us questions. And I've never done a livestream, so I'm excited about it.

• 1:54:27Dax Shepard?

I haven't either. I think we're contractually obligated to do it.

• 1:54:30Speaker 01

Oh, then I'll practice for us.

• 1:54:31Dax Shepard?

Please learn how to do it so we can fulfill that.

• 1:54:33Speaker 01

Um, anyway, so I'm really excited. And then that is leading up to the launch on the 30th, which is very exciting. And that's a complicated story as well. That's what just reminded me of it.

• 1:54:43Dax Shepard?

I'm so excited for you guys. I, I hope everyone listens.

• 1:54:46Speaker 01

Anyway, so, so come to the livestream, check it out. That's that.

• 1:54:50Dax Shepard?

  Give it a check out.

• 1:54:51Speaker 01

  Give it a check out.

• 1:54:52Dax Shepard?

Okay, I have updates from my, well, why don't you tell me what happened while I was on this trip?

• 1:54:58Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:54:58Dax Shepard?

Cause I was gone for six days. Oh, you saw a great movie that I've seen too?

• 1:55:03Speaker 01

I did. I saw one battle after another.

• 1:55:06Dax Shepard?

That is the hardest title for me to remember.

• 1:55:09Speaker 01

  As hard as pneumococcal pneumonia?

• 1:55:11Dax Shepard?

Not, because I can't remember that one. Okay. One battle after another.

• 1:55:15Speaker 01

Yeah. So, so good. I loved it so much. I saw it at the Vista as it was intended to be seen Vista Vision.

• 1:55:28Speaker 01

  And

• 1:55:29Dax Shepard?

Do we think that's a real thing?

• 1:55:30Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:55:30Dax Shepard?

I know it says Vista Vision.

• 1:55:32Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:55:33Dax Shepard?

But do you think they just invented that name? Cause it's the Vista Theater or that's

• 1:55:37Speaker 01

No, it's called the Vista Theater because of Vista Vision.

• 1:55:41Dax Shepard?

  Are you sure?

• 1:55:42Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:55:42Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:55:43Speaker 05

They installed a special screen for it there and everything.

• 1:55:46Speaker 01

  It's the way it's filmed. It's a specific

• 1:55:48Dax Shepard?

Well, I know it was filmed in a larger format and I saw it at IMAX for that reason. And I do think they have a 70 millimeter projector there at Vista? I'm just wondering if Vista Vision was proprietary before that theater.

• 1:56:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:56:06Dax Shepard?

And I don't want to offend anyone. I'm just curious.

• 1:56:09Speaker 01

Vista Vision refers to a high resolution widescreen film format developed by Paramount Pictures in 1954. It works by running thirty five millimeter film horizontally through the camera, which uses a larger negative area to capture a higher quality image with less grain than traditional vertical thirty five millimeter film. While its use in full length features has declined since the nineteen sixties, the format is still occasionally used for visual effects and has seen recent high profile feature film applications. There's only four or five Vista theaters in the world.

• 1:56:45Dax Shepard?

  Really?

• 1:56:46Speaker 01

And we have one right down the street.

• 1:56:48Dax Shepard?

I love that theater. The seats are so comfortable and the spacing so, that's what I like is you get a couple feet in front of your feet.

• 1:56:55Speaker 01

Yes, you can stretch your whole legs out. Okay, so I saw with Jess, now, there was a hiccup, so we, there was, it's sold out. Like, you can, those Vista ones are sold out, but there was availability at the two P M. Great timing, actually, because then you have time for dinner. So, we're driving up and I had plans to get coffee from Pam's Coffee, the coffee shop that's next to it, that's also owned by Quentin, that's after Pam Coffee, Pam Greer. And this is notoriously the coffee shop that I thought was owned by a black woman, and it was a black owned business, and I thought I was supporting, but really I wasn't. Anywho, so-

• 1:57:40Dax Shepard?

It's a white owned business, as it turns out.

• 1:57:42Speaker 01

It's a white male business. So, anyway, I was like planning on getting a coffee and we're driving up, the line, so at the Vista, there's no, you don't buy your seat, you just buy tickets. Okay? So, the line is wrapped around three block, like, it is so fucking long, and I was like, what is that for? And then he was like, it better not be for the movie. And I was like, it can't be, it won't fit all these people, this is insane. And he was like, oh no, if it is, like, we can't go. I was like- Yeah, I know. Like, I don't think we can stand in this line. I don't.

• 1:58:24Dax Shepard?

  Sit in the front row.

• 1:58:25Speaker 01

Exactly. So then he was like, we can't sit in the front row. And I was like, yeah, okay. Well, here's our plan. We'll go into Pam's Coffee. We'll kill time.

• 1:58:34Dax Shepard?

  While that line dies down.

• 1:58:35Speaker 01

Yeah, the whole line will go in and then we'll see. Like, if there's only seats in the very front, we won't watch it. We'll go to Bucatini, the store down the street that I'm really excited about, that I love.

• 1:58:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:58:49Speaker 01

An armchair works there. And I was getting kind of excited about going to Bucatini.

• 1:58:52Dax Shepard?

You are now, like, actually more excited to go shopping?

• 1:58:54Speaker 01

I moved on. I moved on and I was like, ooh, Bucatini. Like, I'm gonna buy this cute little dish there and maybe some pasta. And then we get the coffee and we do have to end up getting in line. It's moving at this point, but we do get in line. And Jess keeps asking, he's, he asks like eight people, have you guys been here? Do you think we'll all fit? He's like, so, he's very worried.

• 1:59:16Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And he's getting verbal about it. Yeah.

• 1:59:19Speaker 01

Yeah. This poor guy behind us was seeing White Lady or some other movie. And I was like...

• 1:59:25Dax Shepard?

Oh, there's a second cinema there?

• 1:59:26Speaker 01

  Yeah, there's two screens.

• 1:59:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:59:29Speaker 01

He said, oh, I'm actually seeing White Lady or whatever. And Jess said, said no one.

• 1:59:39Speaker 01

So anyway, we get in and it's packed. There's like some random one seats, but it's, it's hard. And so we do, we go to the front and there are some seats, like four rows back. And we were like, all right, let's try it. And we'll leave if this is bad. Shout out to an Armcherry Chris, who sat next to us. He introduced himself and he was so lovely and sweet and loves the show. And it was really nice.

• 2:00:10Dax Shepard?

  Was he single?

• 2:00:10Speaker 01

No, but that's funny because Jess was like, he's cute. This is one of those times. You gotta, like, and I was like, no, I don't know. And then Jess started talking to him.

• 2:00:21Dax Shepard?

Sure, sure. And then they went on a date?

• 2:00:23Speaker 01

No. And then he was like, we just moved here. And he was like, we? Who's we? He didn't, he was winging very well.

• 2:00:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, well, he's very good at this kind of thing.

• 2:00:33Speaker 01

And he was like, my wife and I.

• 2:00:35Dax Shepard?

  Open, open relationship or closed?

• 2:00:37Speaker 01

No, we didn't. We didn't get that far. Anyway, um, so, so then the movie starts and we're in immediately. We're not leaving. We love it.

• 2:00:48Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:00:49Speaker 01

  It's such a.

• 2:00:51Dax Shepard?

  Thrill ride.

• 2:00:52Speaker 01

It doesn't, it doesn't take its foot off the gas the whole three hours.

• 2:00:56Dax Shepard?

  I know. And the woman.

• 2:00:59Speaker 01

  Which one? I mean.

• 2:01:00Dax Shepard?

  At the beginning, his, his.

• 2:01:02Speaker 01

  Tiana Taylor.

• 2:01:03Dax Shepard?

  Tiana.

• 2:01:04Speaker 01

  She's amazing.

• 2:01:05Dax Shepard?

  What a monster.

• 2:01:07Speaker 01

I know. And then they're like kissing and licking each other and I was like.

• 2:01:10Dax Shepard?

She's so horny. Every time she gets in the car, she's trying to fuck at the, all the crime scenes and stuff.

• 2:01:15Speaker 01

Fuck everywhere. She's so hot and he's so hot.

• 2:01:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:20Speaker 01

  It's incredible. It's incredible. The acting's unbelievable.

• 2:01:23Dax Shepard?

Leo's impossibly good. He's just the greatest actor. Um, Sean Penn is absolutely unh- I mean, what a fucking performance.

• 2:01:33Speaker 01

  It's incredible.

• 2:01:34Dax Shepard?

The only thing I can think of that like is on the same level is Donofrio in, um, Men in Black as the monster who has a monster inside of his body.

• 2:01:45Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:01:45Dax Shepard?

I mean, the physicality in the, I mean, that walk he had.

• 2:01:49Speaker 01

  I know, I know, I know.

• 2:01:51Dax Shepard?

  It's so bizarre.

• 2:01:52Speaker 01

  It's, it's really, it's, it's so good.

• 2:01:55Dax Shepard?

I was just crying at the end uncontrollably.

• 2:01:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:01:59Dax Shepard?

  Father, daughter.

• 2:02:00Speaker 01

That was interesting to me because I'm, I am a, a big sucker for father, daughter as a daughter. As we talked about, I have many dads.

• 2:02:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:09Speaker 01

  Um, and.

• 2:02:10Dax Shepard?

  It's the daughter of many.

• 2:02:11Speaker 01

Yeah. And I, I'm a sucker for that. I mean, Interstellar, oh my God. What a, oh my God. Um, I did expect to be slightly more moved by that storyline. But I think it's because there's just so much going on and, and it's, and it's funny and it's, but it's like.

• 2:02:31Dax Shepard?

  Hectic.

• 2:02:32Speaker 01

It's hectic and you're. On pins and needles, but um, I mean, it's still, it's still got me, but I, I was expecting

• 2:02:42Dax Shepard?

  A little more.

• 2:02:43Speaker 01

A little bit more from, from that. Also like, it's just so annoying that he still looks like that. He still looks so good and that made me annoyed.

• 2:02:52Dax Shepard?

  You were annoyed by that?

• 2:02:53Speaker 01

  And, and horny.

• 2:02:54Dax Shepard?

  And horny.

• 2:02:55Speaker 01

  I was both.

• 2:02:56Dax Shepard?

So I think what you're describing is agitated.

• 2:02:58Speaker 01

  I was agitated.

• 2:02:59Dax Shepard?

You were agitated in your groin.

• 2:03:01Speaker 01

I mean, I did spend like four or five minutes after the movie thinking about if it really would be a possibility to get some of his sperm to impregnate my egg.

• 2:03:10Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 2:03:12Speaker 01

Cause they had, so the baby in the movie is so cute. Oh my God. And it's a mixed baby, not Indian. Actually, there's a hilarious line about Nick. So a lot of the movie is, is like calling out slash parodying these like very extreme

• 2:03:37Speaker 01

  white supremacy groups.

• 2:03:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:03:39Speaker 01

And there's some, it's like, it's wild and there's some hysterical lines in there.

• 2:03:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:03:47Speaker 01

And I just thought he nailed it. And I also was like, oh yeah, he can do this. He is married to a black woman and has mixed race children. Like he understands this. That's also, I was like, I can't believe he's married to Maya and they just like are out in the, like he seems so, he seems like such an enigma, like Quentin, that it's like you went to Olas with, is that what it's called?

• 2:04:09Dax Shepard?

  Olgas.

• 2:04:10Speaker 01

  Olgas.

• 2:04:11Dax Shepard?

Where he thought he was dead.

• 2:04:13Speaker 01

Yeah. You went to Olgas with him, a Greek restaurant in, in Michigan.

• 2:04:18Dax Shepard?

  No, no.

• 2:04:19Speaker 01

  No, in Austin.

• 2:04:19Dax Shepard?

  Thousand Oaks.

• 2:04:20Speaker 01

Oh, in Thousand Oaks. Yeah. And.

• 2:04:23Dax Shepard?

Weirder than actual either of those states.

• 2:04:26Speaker 01

Yeah. And that's just like so weird to me that he's a real person.

• 2:04:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, he's a normal dude.

• 2:04:31Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's so cool.

• 2:04:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:04:34Speaker 01

It made me, it made me feel very grateful for creative brains.

• 2:04:39Dax Shepard?

Sure. Yeah, that's such a unique singular kind of take on all this.

• 2:04:44Speaker 01

  Yeah, it was great.

• 2:04:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:04:47Speaker 01

  It was great.

• 2:04:48Dax Shepard?

  It was great.

• 2:04:49Speaker 01

Do you think Maya ever just like looks at him and like he farts in the bed and she's like, how are you him?

• 2:04:55Dax Shepard?

No. I bet she's not, I bet she doesn't feel about his.

• 2:05:01Speaker 01

  Art?

• 2:05:02Dax Shepard?

  The way you do, yeah.

• 2:05:03Speaker 01

  Really?

• 2:05:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I bet she thinks he's good, but I don't think, like, you're, you've infused a little bit of magic.

• 2:05:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:05:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:05:12Speaker 01

Like, the, uh, the world has. I mean, the world puts him in this, like, you know, legendary. That's just hard. That'd be so interesting for me. I'll try it. If Leonardo, you know, it's a similar situation if I date him and he gives me a sperm.

• 2:05:27Dax Shepard?

Uh huh, that you'll be enamored.

• 2:05:30Speaker 01

  In the bed.

• 2:05:30Dax Shepard?

Yes, I don't, yeah, I don't think people can be in relationships if they're enamored with one another.

• 2:05:35Speaker 01

  Oh, I agree.

• 2:05:35Dax Shepard?

I think they can respect each other, but I don't think they can be enamored. So, no, I don't, I doubt she's ever in bed thinking like, God, he's so good at filmmaking. I bet she never, ever thinks that.

• 2:05:45Speaker 01

Well, no, I guess I mean more like, like, I, I agree with you. And actually, I think I'm someone who, like, from afar is enamored and then it's, I, forty seconds into meeting someone, it is gone.

• 2:05:57Dax Shepard?

Cause by the way, who gives a fuck if someone's good at their job?

• 2:06:00Speaker 01

  Well, I do. I was, there's a respect there.

• 2:06:04Dax Shepard?

Their job has nothing to do with your life, is what I'm saying. Like, if they're great at their job, that's away from the house. It's not with your kids or you. And then they, you suck when you get home.

• 2:06:13Speaker 01

  Well, yeah.

• 2:06:14Dax Shepard?

No, like, no one cares about the work, cause you're not even involved.

• 2:06:17Speaker 01

Well, no one's preferring it, but.

• 2:06:19Dax Shepard?

By the way, I'm not saying Paul sucks at any of those positions, but it's just like, you don't care if someone's good at their job. What you care about is if, are they a good partner in your household with your family?

• 2:06:29Speaker 01

Yeah, but you still, like, you, you respect when someone is good at something. And you do, you talk about Kristen constantly being like, and the, one of the best actresses, which she is. And, and you can see that and respect it and be proud of it. That doesn't.

• 2:06:48Dax Shepard?

This is a direct one to one. So I'm never in bed, ever, ever, ever, thinking, God, she's such a great actor.

• 2:06:56Speaker 01

  When you're watching her.

• 2:06:57Dax Shepard?

If I see her in a show.

• 2:06:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:07:00Dax Shepard?

I think, God, she's so fucking great.

• 2:07:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:07:03Dax Shepard?

And then additionally, I'm happy for her, right? I'm like, I'm so happy for her. Uh, I'm sure Maya is so happy Paul got the thing in his brain onto the screen so successfully.

• 2:07:16Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:07:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you know what I'm saying, but I, I guarantee she just never ever thinks in bed. I'm so glad he's good at his job.

• 2:07:24Speaker 01

  No.

• 2:07:24Dax Shepard?

Cause you just don't care, you don't care about.

• 2:07:27Speaker 01

I know what you mean, but like, when you're watching Kristen together, if you guys are watching Good Place, like I've been there and, and.

• 2:07:33Dax Shepard?

Hit and Run, we just did, we watched.

• 2:07:34Speaker 01

Okay, Hit and Run, yeah, so, so you're like, I do this when I'm watching her on stuff, I'm just like, God, she's so good.

• 2:07:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, me too.

• 2:07:44Speaker 01

And, and yes, when I am around her as a person, she's my friend, she's a person.

• 2:07:50Dax Shepard?

You're never thinking about how good she is.

• 2:07:51Speaker 01

No, I, I don't, I don't, but I mean, actually, I would, I guess maybe, maybe sometimes even if I'm watching her, she's doing something incredible. And I'm like, God, she's so good. I do think sometimes I'm like, it's crazy, that's the person I know. Like it's definitely, it's like they're separate, they're kind of, and I can see it. So I guess what I'm saying is I wonder if she's watching, she's at the premiere, she's watching this movie. And she's like, holy, my husband made this. Like this person, yeah, this person I know. This person I procreated with, like made this.

• 2:08:33Dax Shepard?

Yes, for sure. When she's watching the movie.

• 2:08:35Speaker 01

Again, the guy farts in the bed, I assume.

• 2:08:39Dax Shepard?

He does, he's a human and all humans fart in their bed. You even told me you farted in your bed.

• 2:08:43Speaker 01

  No, like runtime.

• 2:08:45Dax Shepard?

  I already know that.

• 2:08:46Speaker 01

  Okay, I got one time.

• 2:08:48Dax Shepard?

But, but again, let's say your, let's say your husband is the greatest accountant in the world.

• 2:08:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:08:54Dax Shepard?

You're never laying in bed being like, oh man, he's so good at work. Because again, you're not, that's something he does completely separate from you and your family.

• 2:09:07Dax Shepard?

So him being good at that job has no impact on you, other than financially.

• 2:09:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, it does.

• 2:09:13Dax Shepard?

But if he comes home and he didn't take the trash out and then he leaves his dishes on the thing, it's like, how good of an accountant he is, has, no one gives a fuck.

• 2:09:20Speaker 01

Yeah, I don't know. I, I hear what you mean and I, I think you're right, but I still think there's a respect that happens when someone is good at what they do. And my parents have it for each other. I see it and they talk about it.

• 2:09:34Dax Shepard?

They respect each other and admire each other, but the things that are annoying your mom about your dad, she never goes, but he's a great engineer.

• 2:09:41Speaker 01

  Oh, no, I know that.

• 2:09:42Dax Shepard?

But, but the problem is, is a lot of actors and directors and writers act like in their house, they should be being revered as an auteur.

• 2:09:52Speaker 01

  Right, that's bad.

• 2:09:53Dax Shepard?

And they find people who are fans and allow them to act completely lazy in all departments because they're a genius in this one domain.

• 2:10:03Speaker 01

Yeah, that's why I don't want to date an armchair.

• 2:10:05Dax Shepard?

  And it's bad.

• 2:10:06Speaker 01

  No, it's bad, yeah.

• 2:10:07Dax Shepard?

It's bad for a partner to care that the person's good at the job and it's bad for the person who's good at the job to think that being good at the job has anything to do with your real life and in your interpersonal relationships.

• 2:10:17Speaker 01

I think you're meshing it a little bit. I think it's, I think it's, I don't think it's bad to be like, my husband or my wife is impressive.

• 2:10:27Dax Shepard?

  So, and so talented, yeah.

• 2:10:28Speaker 01

And so talented and, and not, and, and just a hard, good, they're, they're good at that.

• 2:10:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:35Speaker 01

  And I'm impressed by it.

• 2:10:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:37Speaker 01

That's one thing. That doesn't mean that you're just in full like, oh my God, I just, I can't, I can't believe how amazing he is and I just want it like, I'll do anything to keep him.

• 2:10:48Dax Shepard?

But most specifically, it doesn't get you out of a single thing.

• 2:10:52Speaker 01

It shouldn't get you out of anything, no.

• 2:10:54Dax Shepard?

I think people fall in love with rock stars because they see them on stage and on stage, they're absolutely magnetic and, and once in a lifetime. And then they get out to dinner with them and they're, they're a normal person.

• 2:11:07Speaker 01

No, I am so, I mean, I could not be. And more, you're actually saying the thing I say constantly, which is like, no one should be like afraid of anyone's status. Like everyone should, but those are often combined.

• 2:11:24Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:11:25Speaker 01

And so like for me, no, that's one thing they do, but you're in a group of people. You're a person, you're a regular person, everyone's the same. And this reverence is dangerous.

• 2:11:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah. If Kristen slaps one of our daughters on the same day she wins an Emmy.

• 2:11:41Speaker 01

Well, she deserves that because she's, she has full of emotion, like it's a lot.

• 2:11:46Dax Shepard?

I just would, yeah, I just, I wouldn't give a shit about, yeah.

• 2:11:50Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 2:11:51Dax Shepard?

Anyhow, want to do some facts?

• 2:11:53Speaker 01

Now I want to begin by saying that we had a bunch of alcohol on the table during this interview.

• 2:12:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:12:01Speaker 01

People might be confused by that.

• 2:12:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Where did it all go?

• 2:12:05Speaker 01

Uh, Rob made me take it.

• 2:12:07Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 2:12:07Speaker 01

And that is because you thought she would be nervous and that it might be fun to have some libation. Is that what it's called?

• 2:12:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, libation.

• 2:12:16Speaker 01

Yeah, okay. Libations to like, you know, loosen her up. But when she arrived, we, you offered it to her and she was like, what is going on here?

• 2:12:26Dax Shepard?

I didn't, I don't even think I got to offer it to her. She's like, what is, who's going to drink it? Like she made it really clear that that was sounding crazy. So I was like, oh, yeah.

• 2:12:34Speaker 01

  Yeah, we think it's crazy.

• 2:12:36Dax Shepard?

From a party we had last night in the studio. In the studio.

• 2:12:41Speaker 01

So no one partook, just FYI.

• 2:12:44Dax Shepard?

But it was a nice arrangement. I don't mind it as like a, a table piece.

• 2:12:49Speaker 01

Yeah, it's like they need to pay us for that.

• 2:12:51Dax Shepard?

Oh, okay. Well, if we took the labels off, I just like the idea of some cocktails and limes sitting out for guests. Like if I was willing to offer it to her.

• 2:12:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:13:00Dax Shepard?

This is where it's not fair. I should offer it to everybody.

• 2:13:03Speaker 01

Well, we have a lot of sober people in here.

• 2:13:06Dax Shepard?

Offer it to them. That's your sobriety.

• 2:13:08Speaker 01

  It's a test.

• 2:13:11Speaker 01

Anyway, that was that. That was booze.

• 2:13:13Dax Shepard?

Oh, by the way, someone got it. Like, I had said vodka and limes and a lot of limes because I had asked our mutual friend Amanda, what's her cocktail? And it was vodka with a lot of limes.

• 2:13:25Speaker 01

Yes, this was on a previous fact check where you-

• 2:13:27Dax Shepard?

It was on a fact check and someone wrote in the comments, vodka, limes is Jennifer Aniston. And I was like, people are, they know everything about her.

• 2:13:37Speaker 01

  Wowee, wowee, wowee, wow.

• 2:13:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:13:40Speaker 01

  That's cool.

• 2:13:42Dax Shepard?

It's not like they pitched anyone else. Surely other people drink vodka and limes. I didn't see another name in the comments, but it was like, bingo, it's Aniston.

• 2:13:51Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:13:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:13:52Speaker 01

Good job, that person. I didn't know, so I feel dumb.

• 2:13:57Dax Shepard?

  I'm shocked you didn't know.

• 2:13:58Speaker 01

What is Taylor? She likes wine. Taylor likes wine. People know that.

• 2:14:02Dax Shepard?

  She likes sourdough bread.

• 2:14:03Speaker 01

  And she likes sourdough bread.

• 2:14:04Dax Shepard?

I put a hot loaf of sourdough bread in front of her.

• 2:14:07Speaker 01

Well, some people did that while she was on this tour selling it.

• 2:14:10Dax Shepard?

  Well, they do.

• 2:14:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, someone gave her sourdough.

• 2:14:13Dax Shepard?

  She liked it or not?

• 2:14:14Speaker 01

  She liked it.

• 2:14:15Dax Shepard?

Okay, so, but it worked, but it's already been done.

• 2:14:17Speaker 01

It's already been done. I will get her-

• 2:14:19Dax Shepard?

What about sourdough saturated in wine?

• 2:14:21Speaker 01

  That sounds gross.

• 2:14:23Dax Shepard?

  Sounds good to me.

• 2:14:24Speaker 01

  It does.

• 2:14:24Dax Shepard?

Either with a fork or a knife. It's kind of like Jell-O shots.

• 2:14:26Speaker 01

  It's also, it's very biblical.

• 2:14:29Dax Shepard?

  It is.

• 2:14:29Speaker 01

  Eat the bread.

• 2:14:30Dax Shepard?

The body and blood of Christ.

• 2:14:32Speaker 01

Ding ding ding, Jennifer Aniston. Um, okay, Babar.

• 2:14:36Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:14:36Speaker 01

I learned all about Babar and also I was right, he is a king.

• 2:14:40Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:14:41Speaker 01

The book is based on a tale, elephant character named Babar, who first appeared in 1931 in the French children's book, His History of Babar. Okay, it's in French.

• 2:14:52Dax Shepard?

It's not the most appealing title for a kid's book.

• 2:14:54Speaker 01

  Histoire or whatever.

• 2:14:56Dax Shepard?

  De la Babar?

• 2:14:57Speaker 01

Yes, exactly. The book is based on a tale that Brunnhoffs' wife, Cecile, had advented for their children. It tells the story of a young African elephant named Babar, whose mother is killed by a big game hunter. I know, it's sad. Babar the elephant escapes and in the process leaves the jungle in exile.

• 2:15:17Dax Shepard?

  This is Lion King.

• 2:15:18Speaker 01

I know. Visits a big city and returns to bring the benefits of civilization to his fellow elephants. Just as he returns to his community of elephants, their king tragically dies from eating a poisonous mushroom.

• 2:15:29Dax Shepard?

  Ooh.

• 2:15:30Speaker 01

Because of his travels in civilization, Babar is chosen king of the elephant kingdom. Uh oh, he marries his cousin Celeste and they subsequently have children and teach them valuable lessons.

• 2:15:41Dax Shepard?

Oh, that's lovely. Um, it does remind me of my favorite book of that nature, which is Lefkato the Lion by Shel Silverstein. Have you ever, speaking of um, giving tree Shel Silverstein?

• 2:15:54Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:15:55Dax Shepard?

  Uh, Lefkato the Lion? No?

• 2:15:56Speaker 01

  No.

• 2:15:57Dax Shepard?

There are some hunters out on the, he's a lion.

• 2:16:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:00Dax Shepard?

And um, somehow they scare off these hunters and they, they, they leave one of their rifles behind.

• 2:16:06Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:16:06Dax Shepard?

And Lefkato starts learning to shoot the rifle and he's like incredible at it and he spins it on his tail.

• 2:16:13Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:16:13Dax Shepard?

  And um,

• 2:16:14Speaker 01

  Lefkadio.

• 2:16:15Dax Shepard?

Uh, Lefkato the Lion. Lefkadio the Lion, huh? We always in my house said Lefkato.

• 2:16:20Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:16:20Dax Shepard?

But, yeah, that's unfortunate. Anyways, so he becomes a real, uh, what do they call it? A crack shot.

• 2:16:27Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:16:28Dax Shepard?

And then he gets famous. Someone sees him, then they bring him to the big city and then he gets rich. It's kind of like Sid Arthur.

• 2:16:33Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:16:34Dax Shepard?

He goes to the big city. He loves marshmallows. He, that's his favorite thing he's discovered of the human world is marshmallows. He's eating way too many marshmallows.

• 2:16:41Speaker 01

Cause he's rich and he just gets to have them.

• 2:16:43Dax Shepard?

He wears furs now and he like spins the thing, but he's lazy about it and he barely cares when he's putting on a show. And then he's got to return home eventually. It is, it's Sid Arthur. I don't know if Shel.

• 2:16:53Speaker 01

This is your whole story. Your Lefkadio.

• 2:16:56Dax Shepard?

  You think so? Lefkadio?

• 2:16:58Speaker 01

  Lefkadio.

• 2:17:01Speaker 01

The lion who shot back. Lefkadio.

• 2:17:04Dax Shepard?

  Are you thinking a little?

• 2:17:05Speaker 01

  Yeah, that is you.

• 2:17:08Speaker 05

It's got a catheter in it.

• 2:17:09Speaker 01

He might have his catheter in.

• 2:17:10Dax Shepard?

  It's catheter.

• 2:17:12Speaker 01

Shel Silverstein is full of, of like tails.

• 2:17:16Dax Shepard?

And he's got a perverted book. I used to love it. There's this huge tall book that was in our thing and I remember removing it. I was like, I was being naughty when I would look through that one.

• 2:17:26Speaker 01

We forgot to ask her about 1111. That was a huge mistake.

• 2:17:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, we fucked up.

• 2:17:32Speaker 01

I know. I'm upset about that.

• 2:17:34Dax Shepard?

I didn't even see on her wrist if that was there.

• 2:17:36Speaker 01

  Exactly. I didn't either.

• 2:17:38Dax Shepard?

I wonder if that was like a temp for a movie.

• 2:17:40Speaker 01

Maybe. We don't, we'll never know until she comes back.

• 2:17:45Dax Shepard?

We could know, but I don't.

• 2:17:47Speaker 01

No, we have to wait till she comes back. I'll send her another letter.

• 2:17:50Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:17:50Speaker 01

I wonder if it will work the second time.

• 2:17:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:17:54Speaker 01

  Um, Cher's Dollhouse.

• 2:17:56Dax Shepard?

  Cher the pop star or?

• 2:17:57Speaker 01

That's what, yeah, I think. I'm also kind of confused by this. Says you, you fill your little Cher dressing with many little pink hangers and many little Cher doll fits.

• 2:18:10Speaker 01

They were designed either from Bob Mackie.

• 2:18:13Dax Shepard?

Or maybe like in her Sonny and Cher days, she had a line of toys or something.

• 2:18:17Speaker 01

Yeah, I think so. Also ding ding ding, Bob Mackie designed a lot of the outfits that Taylor is wearing in Life of a Showgirl.

• 2:18:26Dax Shepard?

  Oh my goodness.

• 2:18:27Speaker 01

  I know. I know.

• 2:18:29Dax Shepard?

  Wow, wow, wow.

• 2:18:30Speaker 01

Um, Alan Parker did direct Fame. She was right about that. Bruce Almighty, his name is Bruce.

• 2:18:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, thank God.

• 2:18:41Speaker 01

The big mystery. Jim Carrey's name was Bruce.

• 2:18:45Dax Shepard?

That shouldn't have been so hard for us to accept immediately.

• 2:18:47Speaker 01

I know. Um, he just doesn't look like a Bruce. But look, we don't always match our names.

• 2:18:53Dax Shepard?

No, although very few people don't. Well, I'll tell you one that's not, they have the right name, but someone was using a iteration of it.

• 2:19:00Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 2:19:01Dax Shepard?

  That was insane to me.

• 2:19:02Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:19:03Dax Shepard?

I was talking to somebody who.

• 2:19:04Speaker 01

  Love cardio.

• 2:19:10Dax Shepard?

Sorry, that's what you're doing. Rascally with the monitor.

• 2:19:16Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I was running, I was talking to someone yesterday who knows Eric. Our good friend Eric.

• 2:19:21Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:19:22Dax Shepard?

And he was like, yeah, E's crazy. And I was like, oh no, that's not.

• 2:19:27Speaker 01

  That doesn't sound right.

• 2:19:28Dax Shepard?

For Eric, that doesn't work at all. You can't, he's not like a B-boy where you can be like, oh fucking E, do you see E?

• 2:19:34Speaker 01

Well, maybe to that guy he was, he used to do a lot of drugs.

• 2:19:38Dax Shepard?

No, but he's never had a B-boy vibe. He's never.

• 2:19:41Speaker 01

  What's a B-boy? Basketball boy?

• 2:19:43Dax Shepard?

Like a boy who's into hip-hop and he's got the hat, like fucking Entourage, all those guys, Mark Wahlberg's whole world.

• 2:19:52Speaker 01

His name was E on Entourage.

• 2:19:54Dax Shepard?

There you go. There it is.

• 2:19:55Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:19:56Dax Shepard?

But for Eric, I was like, no, we can't, we can't assign him E.

• 2:20:01Speaker 01

That's right. Gosh, this is a good question, though. Like.

• 2:20:05Dax Shepard?

I can't think of anyone we know that has really the wrong name.

• 2:20:10Speaker 01

I guess you're right. I'll, I'll report back. I'm gonna think on this.

• 2:20:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah. The problem is we knew. Jim.

• 2:20:18Speaker 01

  Carrie.

• 2:20:18Dax Shepard?

Before we knew the word Bruce. Now, if he'd always been Bruce Carey. If we had met him as Bruce Carey, it might have been fine.

• 2:20:26Speaker 01

  Bruce Carey?

• 2:20:27Dax Shepard?

  Sounds good. Bruce Carey.

• 2:20:29Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:20:30Dax Shepard?

What were we watching last night? We were, oh, we were watching Jim Bond.

• 2:20:34Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:20:35Dax Shepard?

  007. I introduced the kids to 007 and they like it, which I'm so excited because there's 35 007s.

• 2:20:40Speaker 01

  Great.

• 2:20:41Dax Shepard?

Six different actors that play him.

• 2:20:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:20:44Dax Shepard?

But I kept calling him Jim Bond the whole time, which sounds insane, right?

• 2:20:48Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:20:49Dax Shepard?

  Bond. Jim Bond.

• 2:20:51Speaker 01

Huh. Cause now even like Tom Cruise, like Tom, Thomas, Thomas is like.

• 2:20:59Dax Shepard?

  Cruise sounds crazy.

• 2:20:59Speaker 01

  Yeah. But people, yeah.

• 2:21:02Dax Shepard?

We kept going, me and the girls were like, who wins in a fight between Jim Bond, specifically Daniel Craig? Cause he's such a beast.

• 2:21:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:21:11Dax Shepard?

So he's got the body on Ethan Hunt, Mission Impossible. But the girls decided Ethan had more moves and I think I agree.

• 2:21:19Speaker 01

  Hmm.

• 2:21:19Dax Shepard?

I think in a, in a battle to the death between Jim Bond and Ethan Hunt.

• 2:21:23Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 2:21:24Dax Shepard?

  That Ethan wins that fight.

• 2:21:25Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:21:26Dax Shepard?

But Jim looks way better doing it.

• 2:21:28Speaker 01

Okay. If people call him Dan, that doesn't work. Dan Craig. I don't like that.

• 2:21:35Dax Shepard?

  Now we're getting close to.

• 2:21:35Speaker 01

  Danny.

• 2:21:37Dax Shepard?

Jenny Craig. Then it's the discount food or not discount.

• 2:21:40Speaker 01

  I don't think it's.

• 2:21:41Dax Shepard?

  Discounted calories.

• 2:21:45Speaker 01

Ah, okay. Um, oh, some of the things the morning show predicted. Or like, was kind of like right ahead of, yeah, billionaire space race. Me too. It wasn't really.

• 2:21:59Dax Shepard?

  Predict. I think.

• 2:22:00Speaker 01

  They didn't predict it, but.

• 2:22:02Dax Shepard?

It came after Matt Lauer. The whole thing is like, people thought was about Matt Lauer.

• 2:22:06Speaker 01

  Right.

• 2:22:07Dax Shepard?

So I predict that we're fast and loose with predictive.

• 2:22:12Speaker 01

Well, the, no, the first season of the show was premiered in 2019.

• 2:22:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:22:17Speaker 01

Focus on the immediate fallout after co-anchor Mitch Kessler was fired for. Sexual misconduct, but wasn't me choose 2020? Or was it not? Was it not? It was earlier? Okay.

• 2:22:27Dax Shepard?

And Matt Lauer was probably eighteen?

• 2:22:32Speaker 01

Maybe, okay. But they filmed this in 2013, so it predicted.

• 2:22:37Dax Shepard?

Oh, and they delayed it for six years?

• 2:22:39Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:22:40Dax Shepard?

Oh, what year was Matt Lauer, uh, Rascal?

• 2:22:44Speaker 05

  Twenty seventeen.

• 2:22:45Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 2:22:45Dax Shepard?

  Seventeen.

• 2:22:46Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:22:47Dax Shepard?

So they predicted it had happened two years before.

• 2:22:53Speaker 01

  Okay, COVID.

• 2:22:55Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:22:57Speaker 01

And some other stuff. Oh, war in Ukraine and catastrophic floods in eastern Australia.

• 2:23:03Dax Shepard?

And we're sure that again, that those, okay, those happened.

• 2:23:06Speaker 01

Yeah, those happened. They wrote it before.

• 2:23:09Dax Shepard?

Okay, sorry, I remember a spray malfunction.

• 2:23:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's on your lip.

• 2:23:16Dax Shepard?

You have spray on your lip?

• 2:23:19Speaker 01

Um, all right. Well, that's it for one of the loves of my life.

• 2:23:23Dax Shepard?

  All right, love you.

• 2:23:24Speaker 01

  Love you.
