Alicia Silverstone

Alicia Silverstone (Irish Blood, Bugonia, Clueless) is an award-winning actress, writer, and activist. Alicia joins the Armchair Expert to discuss her incidence of disassociation when remembering entertainment business adjacent meetings, how her mom was a proto-environmentalist without even knowing it, and connecting to the deep, juicy inner lives of older teenagers in her first acting class. Alicia and Dax talk about how she truly could not have been more dissimilar to Cher Horowitz as a person, learning how to use that the funniest element about her was how seriously she took things, and the incredible working relationship she cultivated with Benicio del Toro. Alicia explains her understanding over time that there are some things that are just yours, writing her book The Kind Diet and why becoming vegan helped her feel like she could solve several problems at once, and returning to theater after a hiatus to fall back in love with acting. • 0:00Dax Shepard?

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dax Shepard. I'm joined by Monica Padman.

• 0:04Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 0:05Dax Shepard?

Hi. Today we have Alicia Silverstone.

• 0:10Speaker 01

And we're looking at, I think, 30 year anniversary of Clueless, which is so exciting. A movie that changed my life.

• 0:16Dax Shepard?

Yes, yes, yes, yes. Yeah, I was, so 30 years ago, that's 95. I got to California in 95. And that just seemed like another galaxy. Her and that movie, the notion that I got to sit and chat with her would have been unimaginable.

• 0:34Speaker 01

And there were so many iconic LA things in that movie that when you moved here, weren't you like, oh, the valley, the this, like, everywhere in LA takes 15 minutes. That's true.

• 0:47Dax Shepard?

  Classic.

• 0:47Speaker 01

  Classic and true.

• 0:48Dax Shepard?

  15 or 20?

• 0:49Speaker 01

  I forget.

• 0:49Dax Shepard?

Okay. The Crush, Pretty Thing, Batman and Robin, Blast from the Past. She has a new series out now on Acorn TV called Irish Blood.

• 0:59Speaker 01

  Which you loved.

• 1:00Dax Shepard?

I loved. This was incredibly fun. So please enjoy Alicia Silverstone. We get support from Quince.

• 1:10Speaker 01

Okay. Can we talk about the fact that the holidays are already here? It's crazy. I feel like I blinked and now we're in gifting season, which I'm not really mad about because I do love giving gifts and Quince is making it so easy to find something great for everyone on my list, including myself, because let's be honest, self gifting is a love language.

• 1:29Dax Shepard?

Quince is seriously the gift that keeps on giving. Their high quality staples are made with premium materials like 100% Mongolian cashmere, 14 karat gold and Italian leather, full on luxury quality at prices that won't wreck your holiday budget.

• 1:45Speaker 01

It's the dream. The cashmere sweater is starting at $60, down jackets, wool outerwear, cashmere accessories. You and everyone on your list are staying cozy and looking incredible all season long.

• 1:56Dax Shepard?

Well, I'm gonna tell you this, it just got chilly for the first time this year in California and I'm so excited and I'm wearing my Quince cashmere right now.

• 2:03Speaker 01

  It's great.

• 2:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I am going to gift this to some of my friends. I hope they're not listening.

• 2:08Speaker 01

Quince is also more than clothing. They've got fine jewelry for your significant other, leather bags for your bestie, hotel-quality bedding to set up your guest rooms, chef-grade cookware. That's an amazing thing they offer here. And it's such a good gift because people don't like buying cookware for themselves, but it's very important. And they also have five-star luggage, another good gift that people don't like buying for themselves.

• 2:31Dax Shepard?

Give the gift of quality this holiday season. Download the Quince app for app-exclusive offers or go to quince.com. Get free shipping on your order and 365-day returns. This episode is supported by Helix.

• 2:55Speaker 01

Okay, can we talk about how November is basically survival mode? Between the holidays, the travel, the hosting, the cooking, the everything. Sleep is the one thing keeping me from completely unraveling.

• 3:06Dax Shepard?

It really is the foundation. And I think people underestimate how much a bad mattress is quietly ruining their day. You wake up stiff, your back's angry, you're already behind before your feet hit the floor.

• 3:17Speaker 01

That was me before Helix. I took their sleep quiz, which is so fast. It took me like two minutes. And they matched me to a mattress that actually fits how I sleep. Not a guess, not a firm or soft coin flip. It's a real match. I have a midnight mattress and I really like it. I was noticing it because I actually had to sleep in one of my other beds.

• 3:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 3:35Speaker 01

  Recently.

• 3:35Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 3:36Speaker 01

That doesn't have a Helix mattress on it. And I really could tell a big difference in my sleep.

• 3:40Dax Shepard?

Temperature was all over the map.

• 3:41Speaker 01

  It was a mess.

• 3:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 3:42Speaker 01

  I need a new one.

• 3:43Dax Shepard?

Look, they've got over 20 mattress models. So whether you sleep hot, need extra back support, or you've got a partner who moves around all night, there's one built for you. Plus, free shipping and a 365-night Happy with Helix guarantee. That's a full year to decide.

• 3:57Speaker 01

Helix has been named the most awarded mattress by Forbes, Wired, and more. So it's not just us being enthusiastic. The experts agree.

• 4:04Dax Shepard?

Right now, Helix is running their Black Friday sale with up to 30% off. Go to helixsleep.com/armchair for up to 30% off your Helix mattress. That's helixsleep.com/armchair for up to 30% off your Helix mattress. Helixsleep.com/armchair.

• 4:40Dax Shepard?

I don't think we've met in the world. Do you have a specific memory?

• 4:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:43Speaker 01

Oh, save it for the pod.

• 4:45Dax Shepard?

It's always fun though. You always find out if you're nice or mean.

• 4:49Speaker 01

Oh, you have the movie bag?

• 4:51Speaker 02

  I do.

• 4:52Speaker 01

  How fun.

• 4:53Dax Shepard?

  Wait, what movie bag?

• 4:54Speaker 01

  Begonia.

• 4:55Dax Shepard?

Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Oh, they gave out fun bags?

• 4:58Speaker 02

  They gave out fun bags.

• 4:59Dax Shepard?

As like a wrap present? Oh, my God.

• 5:02Speaker 01

I'm surprised they didn't get you a Patagonia or something because it sounds so similar.

• 5:07Dax Shepard?

They could have done a little play on words.

• 5:09Speaker 02

I think it's supposed to be a gardening bag, right?

• 5:10Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 5:11Speaker 02

Is that what that feels like?

• 5:12Dax Shepard?

You're a known gardener. If they got that specifically for you.

• 5:15Speaker 02

I'm not sure. I think everyone got it, but who knows?

• 5:17Dax Shepard?

That's not a joke. You know, she's a known gardener.

• 5:19Speaker 01

  I didn't know that. That's exciting. I want to become a gardener.

• 5:22Dax Shepard?

I've read a lot of interviews with you today and most of them mention your gardening.

• 5:25Speaker 02

  Um.

• 5:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 5:27Speaker 02

  Really, still?

• 5:28Dax Shepard?

They really do. Okay, where do you claim that we met?

• 5:31Speaker 02

I feel we met, now maybe I've got it wrong.

• 5:33Dax Shepard?

  At the Garden State premiere?

• 5:35Speaker 02

  No.

• 5:35Dax Shepard?

That's an Zach Braff joke because so many people confuse us.

• 5:38Speaker 02

Oh, you know, I'm not confused by YouTube at all.

• 5:43Speaker 02

But there was a kind of private dinner, I want to say with Jonah Hill on La Cienega. If you go off where that Sally Hirschburgers, there was a restaurant.

• 5:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 5:52Speaker 02

And I feel like James Franco was there. Oh, no, not James Franco, sorry. Orlando Bloom. And I feel like you were there that night. No, I may have made that up. It wouldn't have been a very meaningful moment.

• 6:02Dax Shepard?

I really feel like I'd remember, of course, but regardless.

• 6:05Speaker 02

  Doesn't matter.

• 6:05Dax Shepard?

When you paint that picture, it sounds very plausible, right?

• 6:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:09Dax Shepard?

Like, all the ingredients are there. Jonah Hill, sure, I've been to some dinners with him.

• 6:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:14Dax Shepard?

But I'm not remembering that exact one. And I didn't make a scene. You don't remember that much.

• 6:19Speaker 02

No, I think you said something nice to me and that was it.

• 6:21Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 6:22Speaker 02

But that could have been Orlando Bloom and I just confused the situation.

• 6:25Dax Shepard?

If you confuse me for Orlando Bloom, that's a compliment. He's very good looking.

• 6:30Speaker 01

  Very handsome, very handsome man.

• 6:31Speaker 02

I was just with Rob Lowe on his podcast and he said, his memory of our hanging out last was very different than my memory of our hanging out last. So.

• 6:40Dax Shepard?

  Oh, tell me.

• 6:41Speaker 02

He remembered us presenting, I think, at the Emmys, which I have no memory of. I remember. Spending a day together. We were both on a show at the same time. I was on mismatch and he was on whatever show he was doing at the time, 20 years ago. I think we were on NBC, I think. And then the two of us both were, you know, stars of their shows that were coming out. So they had us pair to do a lot of sort of things together.

• 7:03Dax Shepard?

Right. And neither of you know anything about each other's show?

• 7:05Speaker 02

No. And so he doesn't remember that day and I don't remember presenting at the Emmys with him, but we believe each other. I see my magazine covers and I don't remember being there. I know they have it because I see it. The picture looks sort of familiar, but I don't remember being there at all.

• 7:21Speaker 01

It's so interesting. I mean, memory is weird for everyone, but I do think these environments heightened that issue where it's like, where am I? Also, they're all heightened experiences, like a photo shoot and stuff. Everyone's staring at, like, maybe your brain just sort of wants to get rid of that.

• 7:37Dax Shepard?

Oh, that's another aspect. I think in a lot of these situations you do disassociate. You like, in a photo shoot, for instance, I hate getting my photo taken. So when you have those four hour photo shoots, I'm just off in some chamber of my mind.

• 7:49Speaker 02

Lucky you, a four hour photo shoot for a boy.

• 7:52Dax Shepard?

That's light, isn't it? Also, I'm so hard to deal with. We're not going to get a good one. Just send him on his way. I didn't even think he can hear us. I don't even know if he's here.

• 7:59Speaker 01

  He's mad at everyone.

• 8:01Speaker 02

I had one of those yesterday where my manager sent me a video of him at a concert with a woman and he was saying, listen, remember this? And it was Rob Thomas's concert and he was with his wife.

• 8:14Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 8:15Speaker 02

And I had forgotten that I was in a Rob Thomas video. Completely forgot. It was a nice memory. I was like, oh yeah. And then I showed it to my son and he was like, that's you.

• 8:25Dax Shepard?

Okay, so right out of the gates, mom and dad are both from England. They're English.

• 8:29Speaker 02

My brother and I are the first Americans in the chain.

• 8:32Dax Shepard?

  DeeDee is mom?

• 8:34Speaker 02

My mom is DeeDee, but she's no longer with us. She's been gone for almost six years. But dad's still here. I'm going to see him on Friday, almost 92.

• 8:42Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. How old was mom?

• 8:44Speaker 02

She's eight years younger than him and she passed six years ago.

• 8:47Dax Shepard?

  So 84?

• 8:48Speaker 02

  No, she would be.

• 8:49Dax Shepard?

Six years ago, seventy-eight. That's bad.

• 8:51Speaker 02

Yeah, it's bad. Yeah, we don't like that.

• 8:53Dax Shepard?

Did they meet here or did they meet in England?

• 8:55Speaker 02

They did. My mom was a flight attendant for Pan Am. Oh, my gosh, this is so me cutie.

• 9:01Dax Shepard?

  Also, that was very elegant.

• 9:02Speaker 02

She was the most elegant. I thought she was beautiful when she was seventy-eight and she was beautiful when she was my age. And she was just sort of really different than all the other parents, you know, because she wore all Laura Ashley. I don't know if it was Laura Ashley, but that kind of thing. You doesn't even know what that is anymore. It's like that really girly floral.

• 9:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 9:23Speaker 02

When I was younger, it was upsetting. She'd say, why are all your clothes black? So whenever I'd see her, I would try to wear colorful clothes so she could feel good about it.

• 9:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you had a green shirt.

• 9:32Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, I only wore green shirts.

• 9:34Dax Shepard?

  Four years straight.

• 9:35Speaker 02

Because were you trying to be the opposite of her? I wasn't at all. You know, I was born in nineteen seventy-six and that's when we had a revival of female liberation, right? Yeah. That movement. And I think it was in the air because my mom couldn't be that way, but people around her were.

• 9:50Dax Shepard?

And you were in San Francisco?

• 9:52Speaker 02

Yeah, and I did a show called American Woman a long time ago. I played Paris Hilton's grandmother. Oh, wow. Which was Kyle Richards' mother. And in this show, I felt like my mom. They would go to elocution classes and she wanted to be an actress, the character that I was playing. So all that's to say that my mom, she was elegant.

• 10:09Dax Shepard?

  Elegant lady.

• 10:10Speaker 02

  I don't want to change.

• 10:11Dax Shepard?

And there was the real pizzazz. If you were on Pan Am as a stewardess, we called them stewardess.

• 10:17Speaker 02

That's what we called it then. Stewardesses.

• 10:18Dax Shepard?

Stewardesses. But they met in England.

• 10:21Speaker 02

So they met in the States. They were on an opposite date. My dad was on a date with her friend. Okay. And she was on a date. And then they switched apparently by the end of the evening. Oh, my gosh. Was it a double date? A double date. Okay, it was a double date.

• 10:36Dax Shepard?

That turned into a double dare.

• 10:38Speaker 02

  Wow, double dog dare?

• 10:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it turned into a double dog dare and then a reverse back by the end of the night.

• 10:43Speaker 02

  And that was in Florida.

• 10:44Dax Shepard?

What were they all doing in Florida?

• 10:46Speaker 02

He wanted to move to the States for the sunshine, for the better life. They were in the war, World War II, and so my dad was dodging bombs in the underground, you know, as a young boy. That can't be fun. Right. And then he moved to Florida. And he opened up a sandwich shop in Coral Gable, opened a place called Monty's. He had already done this with the restaurant business with his dad before. They were sort of sandwich, dinery kind of places. My mom was a flight attendant for Pan Am and I guess she got stationed in Florida as her base. And for some reason, I guess she chose that. She wanted to get away.

• 11:20Dax Shepard?

All the English love the sunshine.

• 11:21Speaker 02

Yes, they do. I mean, my dad looks really dark.

• 11:24Dax Shepard?

Okay, like Ricardo Montalban or something.

• 11:26Speaker 02

  He's a sun worshipper, always.

• 11:29Dax Shepard?

  He's a sun guy.

• 11:30Speaker 02

Our skin types don't make any sense because I'm very white.

• 11:32Dax Shepard?

  Is he very white?

• 11:34Speaker 02

No, he's dark. It's not his genuine color.

• 11:36Dax Shepard?

  That's not what I'm saying.

• 11:37Speaker 02

I've never seen his genuine color. I don't think there will ever be a genuine color.

• 11:40Dax Shepard?

Where his tighty whities would be is probably quite white, is my guess.

• 11:44Speaker 02

I know, and I don't want to see that.

• 11:45Speaker 01

Yeah, you don't need to think about that.

• 11:47Dax Shepard?

But he wasn't some baby nude, I don't think.

• 11:49Speaker 01

  We don't know.

• 11:50Speaker 02

Probably. He always had a speedo, always.

• 11:52Dax Shepard?

So what took him to San Francisco?

• 11:54Speaker 02

Because he wanted to get into real estate. And that was my mom's idea, and that ended up being very good for him. They were in San Francisco, then when my brother and I came along, we were in San Bruno, then San Carlos. This is all in the Bay Area.

• 12:07Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 12:07Speaker 02

  And then Hillsborough.

• 12:08Dax Shepard?

I'm presuming you're moving up the socioeconomic ladder each of those moves? Because Hillsborough's nice, right?

• 12:14Speaker 02

Hillsborough's like Beverly Hills, but we were a little hillbilly-ish in our, you know, Keeping Up With The Joneses. Like, we had a nice house. My dad had a nice car, but we were all counting pennies. Not that it was bad.

• 12:25Dax Shepard?

He took on all they could afford.

• 12:27Speaker 02

Yeah, we went to Sizzler for dinners.

• 12:29Dax Shepard?

  I love Sizzler.

• 12:29Speaker 02

Benny Hana was the big once a year activity. So when I was 16 and my agent took me to a restaurant that wasn't Sizzler or Benny Hana, I was like, what is this?

• 12:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 12:41Speaker 02

  Like, I couldn't believe.

• 12:43Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you thought the options were either all the food was out in a salad bar or it got made at your table.

• 12:47Speaker 02

Yeah, that was the only option.

• 12:47Dax Shepard?

The third option that they were gonna make it backstage and then bring it out.

• 12:51Speaker 01

Did you feel like you didn't belong in that fancy environment? Did you feel like, or pretending?

• 12:59Speaker 02

We didn't care about that stuff. My mom would so anti-materialism. She was an environmentalist without knowing it. She wasn't trying to protect the earth. She just was absolutely anti-waste. Because of the war. She said, "Remember the war," all the time. Because she also went through the war. There's just a different awareness of... Being responsible and thoughtful about your money, about your resources, which I wish everyone had. And so she had it naturally. She would save everything. I just saw that the other friends

• 13:29Speaker 01

  Right.

• 13:30Speaker 02

were a lot more indulging and some had a lot more, but it wasn't really a thing.

• 13:35Dax Shepard?

America's a really unique place where you can be rich and then feel super poor.

• 13:38Speaker 01

  Right, exactly.

• 13:39Dax Shepard?

Like, there's so many people, you know, that have lived in a really nice neighborhood, but they could barely be there, or they couldn't be there. It was so stressful. And everyone else seemed to be flying to Aspen on planes.

• 13:47Speaker 01

There's so much comparison here, too. So that's part of it.

• 13:50Dax Shepard?

Yeah, just these huge gaps that can exist.

• 13:53Speaker 02

My dad was doing well. He just was really thoughtful. They were frugal. And my dad had come from very little, so you're responsible. You do know what it is on the other side, and you know how hard it took you to get there.

• 14:05Dax Shepard?

Whose idea was it for you to start modeling at six?

• 14:08Speaker 02

  Eight.

• 14:08Dax Shepard?

  Eight, okay.

• 14:10Speaker 02

There was a woman named Pat Forrest.

• 14:12Dax Shepard?

I like her already. It's a solid eighties name.

• 14:14Speaker 01

  Yeah, it is.

• 14:15Dax Shepard?

If you get lost, you forget your keys at school, just go to Pat's house, and she'll look after you for five.

• 14:21Speaker 02

So Pat Forrest lived up the street in San Carlos. We walked to school. It was just two houses down. And Pat Forrest saw me doing dancing. Like, you know how kids put on shows? I'm sure you put on shows. We all put on shows. Do boys put on shows to their parents?

• 14:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but it's more like, watch me jump this thing in the driveway. I set up a ramp.

• 14:37Speaker 02

  Okay, that's the show.

• 14:38Dax Shepard?

The show is generally vehicular in design.

• 14:41Speaker 02

So the girl shows are dancing or singing, right? Well, we would do dancing shows. And it was ridiculous, the costumes that we would put on. One time, Pat Forrest was suffering one of these shows, and she said to my dad, she's gonna be a star.

• 14:54Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 14:55Speaker 02

And now, whether or not she had a premonition, or she was just being very kind.

• 14:59Dax Shepard?

It sounds like a standard thing to say to a parent.

• 15:01Speaker 02

I think it is, but it ended up being somewhat true in her defense. So I think something made them decide that I should go into acting. So I think we got the modeling thing as a way in.

• 15:13Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 15:13Speaker 02

But in my mind, I thought I was an actress, even though I was eight. The modeling thing was not for me. I didn't like it.

• 15:19Dax Shepard?

But you got a Domino's commercial really early, right?

• 15:21Speaker 02

That was once I started acting.

• 15:23Dax Shepard?

Yes. How old were you when you got the Domino's? And before we even explore Domino's, you should know, Monica and I still swear by it.

• 15:29Speaker 02

  We love Domino's.

• 15:31Dax Shepard?

There is a place for Domino's.

• 15:33Speaker 02

  No, not for me.

• 15:33Dax Shepard?

I could have guessed that, but I'm just wanting you to know how

• 15:36Speaker 02

  We love it.

• 15:37Dax Shepard?

  how we feel so, yes.

• 15:38Speaker 02

You feel really passionately. Now, why? Is it the nostalgia, or do you really think they make good pizza?

• 15:43Dax Shepard?

Well, they make a beautiful pizza. Okay.

• 15:46Speaker 01

  And the square, the square.

• 15:47Dax Shepard?

  Thin and crispy, extra sauce.

• 15:49Speaker 01

  It's so good.

• 15:50Speaker 02

Maybe I should try a vegan ones.

• 15:52Speaker 01

  You should try.

• 15:53Dax Shepard?

They have gluten free now, which I get down with.

• 15:56Speaker 01

I can eat a whole one of those.

• 15:57Dax Shepard?

I did it, by the way.

• 15:58Speaker 01

  Recently?

• 15:59Dax Shepard?

Remember I just said I gained 14 pounds?

• 16:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 16:01Dax Shepard?

In the last three days in Nashville. It was from a series of days. One of them was a Domino's order, like fuck everything. I'm going hard.

• 16:09Speaker 01

Yeah, this happened to me sort of recently too, where I got home from a party and I was like, there's only one thing for me to do tonight and it is order Domino's. I have to have it.

• 16:19Dax Shepard?

  It's so funny.

• 16:20Speaker 01

  It was so good.

• 16:21Dax Shepard?

  They're not even a sponsor.

• 16:22Speaker 02

  No, they are.

• 16:23Dax Shepard?

  Well, they should be.

• 16:23Speaker 01

  They are.

• 16:24Dax Shepard?

  Oh, they are?

• 16:24Speaker 02

It would make sense. This sounds like a full blown advertisement.

• 16:28Dax Shepard?

We've been talking like this for years.

• 16:30Speaker 02

  That's why.

• 16:30Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 16:31Speaker 02

  Like they love us.

• 16:32Dax Shepard?

We genuinely love the product. Okay, so how old were you when you got the Domino's commercial?

• 16:36Speaker 02

I was 14, so it was a big jump. My dad, he took me to the theater all the time, so I loved the theater and I never had any intention of being in movies or TV. I didn't know anything about that, just loved the theater. Did some stuff at school and then he got me into an acting class with this woman, Judy O'Neil, who would come to San Francisco with a group of kids and I was a young kid and they were like 17 year olds and 16 year olds. 18, it was so exciting.

• 16:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:00Speaker 02

And like, oh my God, so juicy and therapeutic. Everyone was crying about stuff and didn't like their parents and it was juicy.

• 17:07Speaker 01

  They're A's.

• 17:09Speaker 02

This feels like my people or something. This is more interesting and deep and crazy. I want to be a part of this, so I just was enjoying those classes. I was terrible. And because there was a boy in my class who I had a huge crush on.

• 17:20Dax Shepard?

  Okay, how old was he?

• 17:21Speaker 02

  So Jonah Blackman.

• 17:23Dax Shepard?

  Shout out Jonah.

• 17:23Speaker 02

He danced with Borishnikov. He was in, he was in a Got Milk commercial. He was a star.

• 17:29Dax Shepard?

Yes, and did he have an incredible physique from all that dancing? I imagine he did, yeah.

• 17:33Speaker 02

Probably, but he was very much not playing on my team. And I thought, but Jonah has said that he has been with women since, so not fully, but mostly likes men. But at the time, I thought we were in love. Do you know that song, It Must Have Been Love?

• 17:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 17:46Dax Shepard?

  It must have been love.

• 17:48Speaker 02

  That was our song.

• 17:49Dax Shepard?

  But it's over now.

• 17:52Speaker 01

  Oh, why?

• 17:53Speaker 02

So, "Blessed in Love" was our song, and I was pining for him when I was in England in a camp, like, just dying for Jonah. But Jonah and I were best friends, and I would tell everyone, "He is not gay."

• 18:04Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 18:04Speaker 02

And then one day, you know, it turned out that he was.

• 18:07Speaker 01

  Did you feel betrayed?

• 18:08Speaker 02

  I did for five seconds.

• 18:10Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:10Speaker 02

Because we had been friends for so long, and I just thought, "I've been fighting people on this for like four years now." And he was like, "Listen, it's not my fault. I didn't know."

• 18:17Speaker 01

But now you look like a chump.

• 18:20Speaker 02

  I look like a chump.

• 18:21Dax Shepard?

You're right. You check, your ass can't catch.

• 18:23Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 18:23Speaker 02

  But we also did kiss.

• 18:25Dax Shepard?

  I hope so.

• 18:25Speaker 02

I remember that we liked each other a lot, and there's a lot of Jonah Blackman stories, but anyway.

• 18:29Dax Shepard?

But you were obsessed with him?

• 18:30Speaker 02

I was obsessed with him, so I couldn't pay attention in my class. I just, you know, I would giggle and distract.

• 18:36Speaker 01

This is very Cher. And not to go there this early, but wow.

• 18:40Speaker 02

And then one day, I got it together, and I just got good. And then I went to LA, because they invited me to come to LA with this Judy O'Neill group, and I lived on a futon in a room with other children.

• 18:51Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 18:52Speaker 02

  Very interesting.

• 18:52Dax Shepard?

  The whole experience.

• 18:53Speaker 01

  There's somebody else.

• 18:55Speaker 02

  Eric Dane.

• 18:56Speaker 01

  Eric Dane. I knew it.

• 18:58Speaker 02

  Me and Eric Dane.

• 18:59Speaker 01

Yes, we had Eric on the show, and I'm remembering that he was on the futon of somebody's, and you had come up as well.

• 19:06Speaker 02

And he was there, and he and I were together.

• 19:07Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 19:08Dax Shepard?

  Yes. As romantic lovers.

• 19:11Speaker 02

  Let's hope.

• 19:12Dax Shepard?

Well, you said we were together.

• 19:13Speaker 02

  No, no, no.

• 19:14Dax Shepard?

I misinterpreted. Oh, you were in the same space.

• 19:17Speaker 02

We were in the same group together, in the same class.

• 19:19Dax Shepard?

  But you weren't romantic?

• 19:20Speaker 02

No, definitely not, I have to think. He was a lot older than me. I mean, not that much older than me, but at the time. No, I think I was more interested in Brandon.

• 19:29Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 19:30Speaker 02

  Anyway.

• 19:31Dax Shepard?

  Was he also?

• 19:33Speaker 02

  No, he's not.

• 19:33Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 19:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah, did you like any straight boys at any point?

• 19:39Speaker 02

Yeah, I did eventually, kind of, I guess.

• 19:41Speaker 01

  You came around, who knows?

• 19:42Speaker 02

  Who knows?

• 19:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so you'd gotten the Domino's commercial at 14. You moved to LA at 17 and live on the futon?

• 19:50Speaker 02

It's complicated business. I moved to LA when I was 14 because I'd gone to do this acting camp for the summer at Judy O'Neill's house, where Eric was. We did a showcase, and things started happening, and I didn't understand what was happening. And so then, when it was time to go back to school, I went back to school in San Francisco at my school, San Mateo High School, sophomore year, and I found myself having to fly back and forth for these auditions.

• 20:13Dax Shepard?

Did you know Marshall Tuck by chance?

• 20:15Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 20:17Speaker 02

Why do you know Marshall Tuck?

• 20:18Dax Shepard?

Nate Tuck's my best friend in LA, his older brother.

• 20:22Speaker 02

  Whoa.

• 20:22Dax Shepard?

  You know Marshall?

• 20:23Speaker 02

  Yeah, I remember Marshall.

• 20:24Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 20:25Speaker 02

I think he was a senior when I was a freshman. Does that check?

• 20:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I think he and I are the same age.

• 20:29Speaker 02

Cause he was in San Francisco.

• 20:30Dax Shepard?

He went to San Mateo and I think Nate lived in Hillsborough.

• 20:33Speaker 02

Was not very close with Marshall. No, I mean, like, cause he was a senior. Yeah. But I remember being invited to parties that Marshall was at with Chad Sparks.

• 20:40Dax Shepard?

  These are very-

• 20:41Speaker 02

  Jay Marks.

• 20:41Dax Shepard?

  California names. Chad Marsh.

• 20:44Speaker 02

  Mectee. These were the boys.

• 20:46Dax Shepard?

  Shredder, Beano.

• 20:49Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 20:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 20:50Speaker 02

  Great memory call. Yeah, thanks.

• 20:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, really.

• 20:53Speaker 02

They were all the cute seniors. Yeah, they're memorable.

• 20:56Dax Shepard?

  Fourteen down there.

• 20:57Speaker 02

So I'm going back and forth and back and forth. It's getting ridiculous. So then we decide to take me and just live for my sophomore year, second semester in Los Angeles.

• 21:07Dax Shepard?

And who's we? Me and mom or the whole gang?

• 21:10Speaker 02

My dad and mom and I. My brother was older, so he was already in college. And so they were like, let's go there. And I got off the futon and actually Jonah came and lived with us. Cause I'm remembering he made out with a girl in my bed. Oh, wow. Jonah? Yeah. I know, but we were already-

• 21:28Dax Shepard?

  Very confusing.

• 21:29Speaker 02

We were already past the whole thing. Okay. I'm going to Beverly Hills High now for my second semester of school and I'm doing the commercial. I did a pilot. I probably did the wonder years at this point. And I'm just fifteen. And then I auditioned for this so exciting program at Beverly Hills High, which is the dance group. They had a company. I think it was called The Company. And I wanted to be in this dance company so bad. And I got in, but not in the top ten. There's like an alternate. Oh, sure. Where you get to dance with them, but you're not in. You're just like, if somebody hurts themselves, I guess.

• 22:00Dax Shepard?

  That's right, an understudy.

• 22:01Speaker 02

But I was so excited and I got into the drama department, which I was so excited about. This is for the next year. So junior year, I'm coming back and I'm going to be in these groups. But during that summer is when I got the crush. All those plans got destroyed, but other good things happened.

• 22:15Dax Shepard?

Now, really quick, how was the transplant from San Mateo to Beverly Hills High? You already said you weren't into fashion. You wore the same Gap t-shirt with a pocket on it for four years straight.

• 22:26Speaker 01

  True.

• 22:27Dax Shepard?

Did you feel out of sorts?

• 22:28Speaker 02

Totally. Obviously, the film Clueless is an exaggeration of the people that were there, but some elements are pretty accurate. Like, all the girls did have nose jobs, which is so disturbing at that age.

• 22:39Speaker 01

  Back then, at that age?

• 22:39Speaker 02

Yeah, a lot of them did.

• 22:41Dax Shepard?

And they drove BMWs. Yeah, like Beverly Hills 90210.

• 22:44Speaker 02

They did. They drove the BMWs. Amy did some research.

• 22:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yes.

• 22:48Speaker 02

But I went to that school and I still wore my sweatpants. I still wasn't into any fashion. I still was doing my green t-shirt.

• 22:54Dax Shepard?

  Did you make friends?

• 22:56Speaker 02

I did. We were living in an apartment building that is on the very cusp to count as Beverly Hills.

• 23:01Dax Shepard?

Sure, sure. Like on Robertson or something?

• 23:03Speaker 02

Right off of La Cienega, where meets Wilshire. Right there is La Pier or something, and that street is a little apartment building we lived in. Whereas these girls lived in massive mansions in Beverly Hills.

• 23:15Dax Shepard?

They were going Aspen at Christmas on a jet.

• 23:17Speaker 02

  I think so.

• 23:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. Okay, so when you look back, you must have this feeling all the time. I have it so often, which is like, I'm watching the Britney Spears documentary, and I'm remembering how paparazzi followed her. And I'm watching then on the late night talk shows, people calling her a slut.

• 23:35Speaker 02

  On talk shows?

• 23:36Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, yeah. Calling Monica Lewinsky a fat slut. Really going hard when I watch these docs. I'm like, oh, wow, I lived through that, and it didn't seem crazy at the time, and now it seems insane, right? So similarly, I look at The Crush. I'm like, look at the premise of this fucking movie. You're 14.

• 23:55Speaker 02

  15.

• 23:56Dax Shepard?

  I think you're 14.

• 23:57Speaker 02

  Oh, the character.

• 23:57Dax Shepard?

  The character.

• 23:58Speaker 02

  Yes, okay.

• 23:58Dax Shepard?

  As written.

• 23:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, she's 14.

• 24:00Dax Shepard?

She gets a huge crush on a 28-year-old.

• 24:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:03Dax Shepard?

And tries to seduce him. I mean, this is bonkers.

• 24:05Speaker 01

But it's like American Beauty a little bit.

• 24:07Dax Shepard?

I know, and there were so many of these.

• 24:09Speaker 02

Yeah. Fatal Attraction and Lolita mixed together.

• 24:11Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 24:11Speaker 02

But you're saying now this would not be acceptable.

• 24:13Dax Shepard?

Well, just you look at it and you go like, this is such a...

• 24:16Speaker 01

I mean, they might still make a movie, but probably the takeaways would be much different. I don't know what the takeaways were.

• 24:21Dax Shepard?

It's still such a male fantasy that there's some 14-year-old prowling around America that's so horny. She's trying to fuck a 28-year-old dude and seduce him. I mean, that's madness. That's not really happening. But again, I was that age going like, yeah, this makes sense.

• 24:34Speaker 01

It might be happening if that person probably has trauma, but most likely, the man is preying on that 14-year-old.

• 24:42Dax Shepard?

I mean, look, here's a really dicey one. You won't be seeing anything. Don't worry, this will all fall on my shoulders. But it's like, I'll read a story about someone who got some pictures surfaced, and they were in blackface in 85. And I'm like, that's terrible. Also, there was a movie out called Soul Man that we all went and saw in like eighty seven. It was a white guy playing black in blackface to get a scholarship.

• 25:06Speaker 01

  Yeah, things have really changed.

• 25:08Dax Shepard?

You at least have to acknowledge the context, which is like, there was a movie in three thousand theaters of someone in blackface.

• 25:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:16Speaker 02

But in our culture, nobody wants context. They want clickbait. They want revision.

• 25:21Dax Shepard?

I mean, it's wrong. Don't get me wrong. I'm very clearly don't know blackface, but if it's in the Cineplex and you go on that Halloween, you're not at least thinking you're stepping outside of what the mores are.

• 25:31Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 25:32Speaker 02

Probably most of what we all did was not acceptable.

• 25:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 25:35Speaker 02

  All the time.

• 25:36Speaker 01

That's also the thing that people pointing the fingers. It's like, well, maybe look back at your own past. I'm sure there's something there to dig up. No one was perfect.

• 25:44Speaker 02

It's so hard to be perfect.

• 25:46Speaker 01

  It is. It's impossible.

• 25:47Dax Shepard?

But now that we're out of the water, I do look at it and go like, oh, this is bonkers. There was a hundred movies with like teenage girls in love with older dudes that I watched.

• 25:55Speaker 01

  That men wrote.

• 25:56Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that men wrote. Even the desire of someone that young is you have some insecurities clearly. I'm sorry, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it. You are very insecure as a twenty eight year old dude if what you think you will be matched with is a fourteen year old.

• 26:08Speaker 01

Unless, I mean, I don't know, maybe they've experienced it. I don't know all these people, so maybe one or two of them. I don't want to just say across the board, they're all bad.

• 26:16Dax Shepard?

The writer of this claims that this happened.

• 26:19Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 26:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, maybe it did. The crush, the writer claims that this is a story out of his real life.

• 26:24Speaker 01

Look, there's all kinds of people.

• 26:26Dax Shepard?

Okay, anyways, that movie was a big, big deal for you.

• 26:30Speaker 01

  It was.

• 26:31Dax Shepard?

You were immediately newcomer MTV Movie Awards.

• 26:34Speaker 02

MTV Movie Awards. Best villain. I was very proud of that.

• 26:38Speaker 01

That's a problem to me, that the fourteen year old.

• 26:42Speaker 02

  She was very badly behaved.

• 26:44Speaker 01

  She really stalks him.

• 26:45Speaker 02

Oh, really? But he shouldn't have kissed her.

• 26:47Speaker 01

  She's a kid, though.

• 26:49Speaker 02

She's a kid. There are so many problems.

• 26:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, she's not the villain.

• 26:53Speaker 02

But she is. She's really badly behaved. She almost killed someone. She does need to go to a mental hospital. But sure, it's all problematic.

• 27:02Speaker 01

Yeah, no, she's just sick. She's mentally.

• 27:04Speaker 02

She's trying to do something. She's taking off clothes. He's not pursuing her.

• 27:08Speaker 01

  Right.

• 27:09Speaker 02

But but he does accidentally for one second kiss her back, which was a big mistake.

• 27:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, can't do it. Cannot do it.

• 27:19Speaker 02

Because then she thought they were getting married.

• 27:21Dax Shepard?

Yeah. She had already demonstrated that she had a little tenuous grasp on reality, yet he kissed her back.

• 27:27Speaker 02

She was bad. She hurt her friend. She like made her friend fall off of his horse.

• 27:31Dax Shepard?

  She's no good.

• 27:31Speaker 02

  She's definitely not normal.

• 27:33Dax Shepard?

  She's not good.

• 27:33Speaker 01

She had some issues. She had some mental issues.

• 27:35Speaker 02

  She had some issues.

• 27:36Speaker 01

I will be watching this tonight. This sounds great.

• 27:38Speaker 02

  It's a good one. Yeah.

• 27:40Dax Shepard?

I really remember, of course, the Aerosmith video. Were those cast out of L.A.?

• 27:45Speaker 02

Well, Marty Kalner, the director, who remained my dear friend all the way up until he just passed.

• 27:51Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 27:52Speaker 02

I love that man so much. Talk about mixing up things. You know, he was a 45 year old man hanging out with a 15 year old girl. Maybe I was 16. We would drive everywhere together. We hung out all the time. Like, I'm sure it looked frickin weird. He was just totally clean. He thought I was his daughter and he wanted to protect me. I didn't know any of that. I just thought he was my friend.

• 28:12Speaker 01

  Right.

• 28:12Speaker 02

But as I got older, I started to realize, oh, he's been a solid, healthy figure in my life.

• 28:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 28:19Speaker 02

Anyway, he's adorable. So he had seen The Crush with, I think, John Kaladner, who was a big guy at Geffen Records, and said, will you be in this video? And I didn't know who Aerosmith was at the time because I was 16 years old. My kid doesn't know who Madonna or Elvis is.

• 28:34Dax Shepard?

This string of videos you do is actually kind of the rebirth of Aerosmith. So if people don't know, Aerosmith was enormous in the 70s. They went away. Run DMC brought them back for a minute with Walk This Way.

• 28:43Speaker 02

  Marty directed that.

• 28:44Dax Shepard?

Then they were kind of out of it, but that kind of recharged. And then now this crop of music is when they come back on the scene hard. Liv was in one of those three videos.

• 28:52Speaker 02

She was in the third one. Yep. So I did Cryin' with Steven Dorff. I bungee jump off of the bridge and flip him off.

• 28:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 28:59Speaker 02

That was the one that won best video of all time, just to be crystal clear.

• 29:03Dax Shepard?

  Yes, and it deserved to.

• 29:05Speaker 01

  What a great accolade.

• 29:06Dax Shepard?

  It beat Thriller.

• 29:07Speaker 02

Best video of all time. Isn't that crazy?

• 29:10Dax Shepard?

  Beef with that just because.

• 29:12Speaker 02

You can totally have beef with that. It doesn't make sense.

• 29:14Dax Shepard?

But it's a great fucking video. I don't know how they'd pick. I'm gonna call for a vote.

• 29:18Speaker 02

You should do a re-. But I will say that you can totally do that. I think that what made it different was for the first time a woman was in a video in control and powerful and not like just taking her clothes off.

• 29:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, on the hood of a car.

• 29:30Speaker 02

All the videos were like that. Every video was a girl totally naked.

• 29:34Dax Shepard?

Did you and Liv have a little something? Did you guys?

• 29:36Speaker 02

  We did some stuff.

• 29:37Dax Shepard?

Did you guys kiss maybe in that video? They just infer that maybe?

• 29:41Speaker 02

Oh. When Marty and I talked about doing this third video and Liv wanted to be in it, he was talking about doing a strip thing and I said, I'll be the guy. I don't want to strip. I had the idea that I'll just be a dude watching her. Like viewing. And that that will be hot in itself.

• 29:56Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 29:56Speaker 02

So that's how that part got born. But yes, the whole video is us like romping around and pretending that we're making out.

• 30:03Dax Shepard?

  Very exciting. Very exciting stuff.

• 30:05Speaker 01

This is what a rock star dad, this is the difference. My dad would not be cool with me being young in, in his video.

• 30:17Dax Shepard?

  Being sexual.

• 30:19Speaker 01

But that's like growing up with a rock star dad.

• 30:22Dax Shepard?

She had just recently found out that was her dad. It was pretty recent.

• 30:26Speaker 02

  Oh, I didn't know that.

• 30:27Dax Shepard?

She was raised by another great musician, Todd Rundgren.

• 30:33Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 30:33Dax Shepard?

Who her mom was married to growing up. This is all public knowledge. And then I'm now nervous I'd be waiting in the stuff I know. But all I know is I think she found out kind of later.

• 30:42Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 30:42Dax Shepard?

That her dad was Steven Tyler. They went to a show and they started talking backstage.

• 30:46Speaker 01

  You look just like me.

• 30:48Dax Shepard?

They're twins and their vibe is their vibe.

• 30:51Speaker 02

That's weird. She met him and didn't know.

• 30:52Dax Shepard?

Pretty sure that's the story. I'll fact check it with her. Yeah.

• 30:56Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 30:57Dax Shepard?

I think they had a kismet meaning and then the mom told her, I think.

• 31:01Speaker 02

Interesting. Well, I mean, they literally have the same everything.

• 31:05Dax Shepard?

Yes, same exact sense of humor.

• 31:07Speaker 02

I don't know them that well, but I mean, like the face, like the mouth.

• 31:10Dax Shepard?

Yeah, the lips. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 31:13Speaker 02

I love in the video when he's doing his like. You know, and then his kick of the leg, she mimics that. And it's perfect. It's like back and forth.

• 31:21Dax Shepard?

So I did a movie with her and that's when we became friends. And then somehow she said to me, she was at her dad's and she said, I'm doing this movie with this guy. Who's this guy? And he's like, he was in Without a Paddle. That's my favorite movie. And gave me his stationery that is a silhouette of him doing that. Oh, no way. Yeah. And he wrote like, Without a Paddle, greatest movie of all time on this cool stationery. And I framed it. It was one of the many things Kristen was like, Jesus Christ. When she came into the house, it's like, there's so many pictures of yourself around. That's a cute one to have though.

• 31:51Speaker 02

  That mouth is incredible.

• 31:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, it is.

• 31:53Speaker 02

Like every time I see a clip, somebody just showed me a clip of it.

• 31:56Dax Shepard?

Hundred and fifteen teeth. You can see the molars when he smiles.

• 31:59Speaker 02

  It's incredible.

We get support from Skims. Okay, I have a confession. I genuinely love matching pajamas. It's the best part of Christmas morning, really. Everyone in the same matching set, looking ridiculously cute in front of the tree.

• 32:23Speaker 01

I love matching pajamas. I'm literally going to be in coordinating sets with all my friends this holiday season. Because I got them, spoiler to my friends who are listening, the same Skims pajama set I've been living in. They are so soft and cozy and they look cute. So you can leave the house and go get a late night hot chocolate and be cozy.

• 32:44Dax Shepard?

It's so great how Skims has sets for everyone too. Women's, men's, kids, even your pets. So nobody in your life has to be left out this year.

• 32:54Speaker 01

I have a bunch of different pajama sets. One of my favorite is the organic cotton sleep long sleeve set.

• 33:00Dax Shepard?

  Okay, tell me more.

• 33:02Speaker 01

It is so comfortable, very chic too. The top is a button down, but very, very soft, easy to sleep in. But as I said before, you can multi-purpose this and look super cute.

• 33:14Dax Shepard?

Hot chocolate runs. It's like the pajamas we grew up in, except without the scratchy polyester that made opening presents feel more like a hot yoga class that nobody signed up for.

• 33:23Speaker 01

This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Every family has that one holiday tradition nobody actually enjoys, but everyone keeps doing because stopping it would feel like a federal offense. For me, it was a specific meal situation that I will not name because my family listens. But at some point, you have to ask yourself, am I doing this because I love it? Or because I'm afraid of what happens if I don't?

• 34:05Speaker 01

Yes, and that question applies to so much more than the holidays. I think a lot of us carry these invisible rules about how we're supposed to spend the holidays, who we're supposed to see, what it's supposed to look like. And when you start unpacking that with a therapist, you realize half of your stress is coming from rules you didn't even write.

• 34:21Dax Shepard?

This is where BetterHelp can be a great resource during the holidays. BetterHelp does the initial matching work for you so you can focus on your therapy goals. A short questionnaire helps identify your needs and preferences, which means they typically get it right the first time. If you aren't happy with your match, switch to a different therapist at any time from their tailored recs.

• 34:40Speaker 01

I just love therapy. I've been avoiding it recently, or not avoiding it, but I was like, oh, I'm busy, I'm busy, I'm busy, I haven't canceled, canceled, canceled, but then I-

• 34:48Dax Shepard?

  You start feeling it.

• 34:49Speaker 01

Yeah, because then I had it this past weekend and I was like, oh, my God. And just thank God, thank God for her. Yeah.

And by the time I've dealt with all that, the stuff I actually want to focus on gets whatever's left.

• 37:31Dax Shepard?

Okay, so I think you're 18 when you shoot Clueless.

• 37:34Speaker 02

  I turn 18 on set.

• 37:35Dax Shepard?

Now, again, I know this is common knowledge, but it wasn't to me. What's interesting about Clueless, of course, I saw it. I loved it.

• 37:42Speaker 01

It's the first movie I remember being so obsessed with, have to watch over and over again. All our friends watched it and were being the characters. It was the first like real zeitgeisty movie I was a part of.

• 37:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, were your friends assigning like you're so and so and I, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 37:58Speaker 01

  Yes, you're Dion.

• 37:59Speaker 02

Who are you? Were you Cher?

• 38:01Speaker 01

No, they wouldn't let me be Cher because I wasn't white. Again, this is the times. Maybe now I could be Cher.

• 38:07Dax Shepard?

  You kind of are Cher.

• 38:09Speaker 02

  Kim Kardashian was just Cher.

• 38:11Speaker 01

Exactly. I was probably put in the Dion, who I love. Great character.

• 38:15Speaker 02

Yeah, it's a great character. You can't really go wrong.

• 38:17Speaker 01

No. But yeah, it was the first movie that while I was alive, hit the zeitgeist.

• 38:22Dax Shepard?

Would you put me in the Paul Rudd one or the best friend?

• 38:25Speaker 01

Wait, the Paul Rudd character or the gay guy?

• 38:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 38:30Speaker 02

  That's not.

• 38:32Dax Shepard?

I don't know if we say that now, but yes.

• 38:33Speaker 01

Christian, Christian, you're neither. You might be more of the other guy who ends up being a douchebag, but that's not.

• 38:41Dax Shepard?

  But that's okay.

• 38:42Speaker 02

Oh, Jeremy Sisto's part. We're gonna give you that part.

• 38:45Dax Shepard?

  Okay. Physically, I get it.

• 38:47Speaker 02

I don't know you well enough, but I think just on first sniff, that is fun.

• 38:51Dax Shepard?

Well, there was definitely a period of my life and perhaps that period of my life where I would have been.

• 38:54Speaker 01

Paul, I forget that it's him. So wild.

• 38:58Dax Shepard?

Okay, now what's totally known, which I don't know that I did, is you couldn't be more opposite than her. Which again, when you meet somebody in a movie, you just kind of assume that's who they are. I dealt with a different thing, which was I played mostly just dumb asses for like the first seven years.

• 39:15Speaker 02

Wait a second, I love your show. I just remembered.

• 39:18Dax Shepard?

  Parenthood?

• 39:19Speaker 02

No, I don't know that one. The one with Lake Bell.

• 39:22Dax Shepard?

Oh, bless his mass. Yes, yes.

• 39:24Speaker 02

I just completely forgot until just now.

• 39:26Dax Shepard?

Oh, that's the like, you're only the third person I've ever met that saw that.

• 39:30Speaker 02

  Oh, I loved it.

• 39:31Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wonderful.

• 39:32Speaker 02

I love Ed Begley in it. I love all the actors in it. It's so good.

• 39:36Dax Shepard?

Monica was on it. She was, uh, she, the fair scene. What were you?

• 39:39Speaker 01

Yeah, I played like an egg salesman or something.

• 39:42Dax Shepard?

  Competing.

• 39:42Speaker 02

Such a good show. Okay, sorry. So you're saying that you got put in a category from what?

• 39:48Dax Shepard?

Oh, just I played a dumb ass. I was in Idiocracy. I played dumb a bunch or white trash. And I think people, when they would meet me, they're like, oh, you're not dumb. That would be kind of the first thing they would say. You're taller than I thought and you're not dumb.

• 40:00Speaker 01

Yeah, because he was also on Punk Pranking all these people. There's definitely, I do think for a lot of people like, oh, you are not what I expected.

• 40:07Dax Shepard?

Right. So. You have that so much. I wrote down a thing you said, which I thought was fascinating. Most of the time, I didn't even know what Cher was talking about. Most of the dialogue was a different language. Amy knew all the street words and had her finger on the pulse of the latest underground everything. I was the exact opposite and knew nothing. You were not stylish at all. You weren't hip like that.

• 40:30Speaker 02

I didn't go to Hollywood parties. I was really just into the earth and animals and food and permaculture, a theater nerd.

• 40:39Dax Shepard?

  Anti-materialism. Yes.

• 40:42Speaker 01

  How interesting.

• 40:42Dax Shepard?

I mean, it's one of the biggest gaps I think I've observed in a popular character and then the actor playing it.

• 40:48Speaker 02

You experience it like it makes sense to you seeing me?

• 40:51Dax Shepard?

Does it make sense seeing you? You're very authentically yourself right away and it's not Cher.

• 40:56Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 40:58Dax Shepard?

That can't be said for a lot of roles.

• 41:00Speaker 01

  She was so iconic.

• 41:02Dax Shepard?

Let me back up. This is how I want to frame this.

• 41:04Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 41:05Dax Shepard?

We've had a few different male actors. I'm going to use Chris Pine as an example, where he had cystic acne growing up. He became like an overnight sex symbol and trying to make peace with that and embrace this thing that is working publicly, but you feel so completely removed from. Again, that gap between what people see and think versus what you know you are. And then this sense of fraudulence or imposter syndrome, all these different weird things that arise from that. I'm wondering if that chasm between this character you got so known for and who you were felt like it was going to be problematic for the rest of the world to deal with.

• 41:40Speaker 02

I can't be responsible for what the rest of the world dealt with, but I do know that at that time, I felt like I was a serious actress and I knew what it took to be an actor. I knew the work that was required. Like some people are really beautiful and they act and they're like, okay, but they're beautiful. Maybe because I was in a house with people like Eric and Brandon, who made it clear to me like, you know, they were big brothers. They said mean things that made me go, oh, I'll show you.

• 42:12Speaker 02

Maybe not Eric, but I didn't come into this going like. Oh, I want to be in movies.

• 42:17Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 42:17Speaker 02

Yeah. Or as a sex symbol. Yeah, I didn't even like, what? Yeah. I feel like I was just a baby.

• 42:22Dax Shepard?

And it sounds like most of the crushes you had had at that point were with guys that were either unavailable or, right? Have you experienced a ton of attention that way prior to it?

• 42:30Speaker 02

  Male attention?

• 42:31Dax Shepard?

I mean, you're obviously beautiful, so I'm sure people looked at you.

• 42:33Speaker 02

Yeah, it wasn't like that. I mean, I will say that the high school boys who we were talking about, that Marshall group.

• 42:39Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 42:40Speaker 02

They did come over to me when I was in freshman year and asked me, do you want to come to a party of ours? And I was like, I'm getting asked to a party by the seniors? And then I thought, oh, my God, that was so fun. I was very dorky and nerdy and didn't have a sense of fashion. I definitely wasn't walking around like Cher is. Right. We can clearly say that. She's so much a product of her environment. And what I was able to latch on to, because I remember thinking that she's shallow, materialistic, things I didn't like.

• 43:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 43:11Speaker 02

But what I remember loving about her was her wanting to take care of her daddy. She felt like she was doing charity with Ty. She was so giving. And in her small little world of money and popularity and everything going her way, she really was very charitable. Right. Like, she was trying to spread the wealth. She was trying to give back a little. It's so ridiculous. It's so funny. I remember thinking, I'm not funny. And I remember at the time, my agent, who then became my manager after, but at the time, she was my agent, Carolyn.

• 43:42Dax Shepard?

  And then my husband.

• 43:43Speaker 02

And then my husband. Carolyn Kessler, basically. She said, what I think is funniest about you is when you get very serious, you know? And I'm like, well, that's kind of insulting and also amazing at the same time.

• 43:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 43:55Speaker 02

But how I translated that information, because at that point, everything I did was sort of dark. I was in Jeff Goldblum's Hideaway with Jeremy Sesto again. I had been in a movie in France with Le Nouveau Monde with James Gandorfini. Oh, wow. I had been doing these dramas. There was not one comedy in the eight movies that came before Clueless. And like I said, I considered myself a very serious actress.

• 44:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 44:18Speaker 02

So I obviously could laugh about that now, but I do think when they were saying Aerosmith chick, I was like, huh? Aerosmith chick? How dare you? Like, how dare you? Do you know what it took? Like, it's just ridiculous. You know, you're a kid.

• 44:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you take yourself extremely serious.

• 44:32Speaker 02

So I didn't have any bad behavior around that, hopefully, maybe. But I just thought in my head, here I am doing, I've already forgot what we're talking about again. What is wrong?

• 44:40Dax Shepard?

  Clueless.

• 44:42Dax Shepard?

We know what's going on with you. We just had an expert on.

• 44:45Speaker 02

  Oh, is it menopause?

• 44:46Dax Shepard?

Perry, we're virtually the same age.

• 44:49Speaker 02

I blame it on my schedule.

• 44:51Speaker 01

  That's probably more that.

• 44:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, my recall for names, I'm like, oh, it's all really happening.

• 44:55Speaker 02

  You having perimenopause?

• 44:56Dax Shepard?

I am. I'm having one over the male.

• 44:57Speaker 01

He has sympathy, perimenopause, sympathy pause.

• 45:01Dax Shepard?

Cause everyone in my life claims.

• 45:03Speaker 02

But this also happens after you have a baby. Your brain goes out the window after a baby and then the whole thing. Anyway, where were we?

• 45:09Dax Shepard?

What I was talking about was, yeah, although obviously the crush was big and got attention, this was something so humongous and as we now know, permanently in the culture. And right away, like I watched your first interview on the Today Show, which one of the times you were on recently, they showed it and you were 18.

• 45:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:28Dax Shepard?

And you're just quite honestly, in so many words, like, yeah, this is uncomfortable for me. I don't really know how to do this. You were expressing discomfort right out of the gates. And what I was curious about.

• 45:38Speaker 01

  That's so sweet.

• 45:39Dax Shepard?

It is. I liked how honest it was, but I was curious, was it a discomfort with fame or was it this tension between, I just played this thing everyone loves and America's talking about? And now I'm going to be somebody that is completely different from that.

• 45:52Speaker 02

I didn't have any care about that.

• 45:53Dax Shepard?

You didn't feel like, oh, that's what they want from me?

• 45:56Speaker 02

Unfortunately, I didn't care. I didn't like the attention. It's so overwhelming to be so young and being asked crazy questions.

• 46:04Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 46:04Speaker 02

  And being scrutinized.

• 46:06Dax Shepard?

Someone ask you your bra size or something? Six year old guys asking these teenage girls whether they have fake boobs, whether they're bra size. It's crazy.

• 46:13Speaker 02

To me, that's the funny part, the bra size thing. A lot of it's not funny. So I just didn't have any interest in it. I was an activist in my little heart since I was a little girl. And so I really got focused. I just went, fuck all this. Are we allowed to swear?

• 46:26Speaker 01

  Oh, please. Yes.

• 46:27Dax Shepard?

  It's encouraged.

• 46:28Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 46:29Dax Shepard?

  Rewarded financially.

• 46:31Speaker 02

I went to Peru to go down the Amazon River with Woody Harrelson in intentions to save the rainforest.

• 46:36Dax Shepard?

  Okay, wow.

• 46:37Speaker 02

I went to Africa to help with floppy trunk syndrome with these elephants, made a little documentary with Ted Turner's company. I got into all my socially, environmentally sound.

• 46:48Dax Shepard?

And what was the management around you saying?

• 46:51Speaker 02

  Nobody really loved that.

• 46:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 46:53Speaker 02

  That was not great.

• 46:54Dax Shepard?

They're probably like, you gotta capitalize. You have an opportunity right now. You can work with great directors. Here's what's on the buffet for you and the buffet will get taken away at some point.

• 47:01Speaker 02

I don't know that it was as clearly articulated like that, but I do think that. Activism in general. I remember being on some talk show in the morning and I never went through media training at that time. And there's no playbook for becoming famous. There's no guidance. Yeah. I didn't know how to do the press part or the being in public part. So I was on one one morning and they asked me something like, what do you think about Mary J. Blige? Or whatever. And all I knew was that she was wearing some big fur coat. And I started describing anal electrocution of how they got that coat.

• 47:34Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 47:34Speaker 02

That was an innocent response. Then afterwards, everyone was like this.

• 47:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Yeah, no one's to hear about anal electrocution.

• 47:41Speaker 02

Why are you talking about anal electrocution on a national morning show? They want to hear about Clueless. And I was like, I need to go. Like, because everybody needs to know. At first, I thought I could use the press that I didn't want to be doing to talk about these things. But then I needed to realize that none of them wanted to hear it.

• 47:59Dax Shepard?

Yeah, there's like a bunch of horse trading that goes on. Yeah, I'll come do this, but I want five minutes to talk about this. And no one wants to do that five minutes.

• 48:06Speaker 02

That conversation didn't happen. It was more like, how are you? Well, did you know this?

• 48:10Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 48:11Speaker 02

  And did you know this?

• 48:12Dax Shepard?

I'll tell you, I'm better than the Amazon rainforest, which is being depleted with thousands of acres every hour.

• 48:17Speaker 02

Did you know nine million? And I still do it. I'm like, nine million people die a year from hunger. It's an inefficient use of resources. What are we doing? And people were like, who's this weird girl?

• 48:26Dax Shepard?

She's supposed to give us fashion tips. She's got great style.

• 48:28Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 48:29Dax Shepard?

  How to catch a boy.

• 48:30Speaker 02

So I just sort of went a little bit off.

• 48:32Dax Shepard?

So there was the light switch of fame, which had to be completely disorienting. But then there was, did you sign a deal for like eight to $10 million with Columbia right after that? Did you get a massive development deal?

• 48:45Speaker 02

I did, and I don't remember the amount.

• 48:46Dax Shepard?

Okay, that's what the internet says. Let's just say it was a ton of money that you probably had never seen. Was that part exciting?

• 48:53Speaker 02

Yeah, I remember what was exciting at that time because I had seen Jodie Foster direct stuff. I thought, they're asking me to make this movie and I get to produce it because I had not been interested in the script many times. And I'd had one experience with that prior with The Babysitter, where I didn't produce The Babysitter, but I remember the girl felt really like she had nothing to do. She was just a sex object. So I was able to talk to them about, hey, can we make this more of a human being? And she's still obviously a sex object in the end of the day, but she's more of a human.

• 49:25Dax Shepard?

  She's a multifaceted sex object.

• 49:27Speaker 02

I guess. It is about their messed up. Brains. They are all fantasizing about who she is. So I had her like reading Shakespeare and doing weird things that made her sort of different. But I got a taste of, oh, you can adjust things and make things a little different. And so on Excess Baggage, they were asking me, what is it that you want? And I liked the idea. It was just not being executed at the time, the way that I felt like I wanted to jump into.

• 49:49Dax Shepard?

So I have great curiosity about Excess Baggage.

• 49:51Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 49:52Dax Shepard?

That was the first movie you developed under that deal. And Benicio del Toro, Christopher Walken, this is like a fucking incredible cast.

• 49:59Speaker 02

  My god, yeah.

• 49:59Dax Shepard?

Like me, you had seen Usual Suspects, right? And you're like, who the fu- give me the fucking keys, the cocksucker. And then he flip you. He flip you for real. He flip you for real. When's the last time you saw that movie?

• 50:11Speaker 02

  I know. I want to re-watch that.

• 50:12Dax Shepard?

Oh, my god. You can't understand one word he says in the whole thing.

• 50:15Speaker 02

Yeah, I loved it. He's brilliant.

• 50:16Dax Shepard?

So was it hard to get? Because he seems so elusive to me. I don't understand. I would love to talk with him and understand what the game plan is. Because he's just gone for these long periods of time. And then he pops up in three movies right away. I'm like, how's he deciding all this? He seems hard to get into something. Was it hard to get him in that?

• 50:31Speaker 02

No. I had a similar conversation with him where we sat down and I was like, the script sucks. Let's make it good. And he was like, okay.

• 50:38Dax Shepard?

It's all good. Well, let's flip it.

• 50:40Speaker 02

He doesn't talk like that in real life.

• 50:44Dax Shepard?

It's really good, Monica. I know you're cringing, but that's kind of how it sounds.

• 50:46Speaker 02

I know the line. Everyone knows the line.

• 50:48Dax Shepard?

  He flip you for real.

• 50:51Dax Shepard?

What was it like working with him?

• 50:52Speaker 02

He and I had an incredible working relationship. I could write a book about that. So we'll just give you the highlights, which is, I think that we had a tremendous respect for each other. I know that he really valued, he always would say, you're so strong. And that was because I was totally unhinged. I did not know any rules. I had nobody sit me down and go, this is how you get things you want. Thank god, though. In some ways. In some ways, but in other ways, I really should have been sat down and explained. That said, we had an incredible journey together on that experience that anyone who was involved would understand. And it's really to be left in a vault until I'm like writing a memoir, because it's too, you know.

• 51:36Dax Shepard?

That's the second time you've policed yourself. Maybe the third.

• 51:39Speaker 02

  I police myself a lot.

• 51:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah, tell me about that. What's your fear?

• 51:41Speaker 02

Because I've been doing this for a long time. And I don't like how, if you and I have a really, I mean, there's so many things we've already said that I could go back in my mind and go, oh, when it's heard. They then take the one little thing and it's all over the news and it's just annoying.

• 51:58Speaker 01

It is annoying, but you still care.

• 52:01Speaker 02

Do I care? That's a good question. My ex-husband, who I love very much, always said, I don't know what your problem is. Everything you say is so punk rock. He thought it was great.

• 52:10Speaker 01

  It's great.

• 52:11Speaker 02

And I can look back and see it that way, but what I don't love is it being brought back to me. It's just boring. You know, if every interview you do, somebody's bringing back something.

• 52:20Dax Shepard?

  They bring up some, yes.

• 52:21Speaker 02

Yes, I just want to stay in the now. We're having an incredible conversation, but what could be taken from it?

• 52:28Dax Shepard?

I was just curious, did you have an event where you felt I paid a big price for that?

• 52:32Speaker 02

No, I also just think there's a lot of things to say that it's no one's business. And I don't want to out people left and right. Like, why? There's a million things that have happened to me. I just have no interest in.

• 52:44Dax Shepard?

  Running other people through.

• 52:45Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 52:46Dax Shepard?

  Me either.

• 52:47Speaker 02

I just have no interest. I don't lose sleep over any of this stuff. I have a really good life. I love my kid. I'm fine. So I just feel very well. I don't need the drama. I don't need the drama.

• 52:57Dax Shepard?

And I don't say anything here about other people, but I'll admit, I would have been in love with Benicio del Toro. He's so sexy.

• 53:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:04Dax Shepard?

And I think he looks like Brad Pitt.

• 53:06Speaker 02

Yes. So that was part of my pitch. So I had to go, see now, I don't know if this is okay to say.

• 53:11Dax Shepard?

Well, you tell me, you can cut it out.

• 53:12Speaker 02

I don't know. Okay. So I just don't know if he'd like this or who would like it, but I had to go into Sony and beg them to hire him. And when I did, I was like, he's the Spanish Brad Pitt. Are you fucking kidding me? Like, what? He's dying. I so want it. I was like blushing and like, I did this whole crazy thing.

• 53:31Speaker 01

  That's correct.

• 53:33Dax Shepard?

Yes, I love that. There's nothing bad about that.

• 53:35Speaker 01

  That's just flattering.

• 53:36Dax Shepard?

You're worried that Benicio would hear that he had to get pitched to the studio, but he's realistic. He had three lines that he mumbled in one movie and he wanted to be the co-star of this movie.

• 53:46Speaker 01

Thank you for doing that. We had Brad Pitt on recently and it was great. My main takeaway, because of course that happened. People are pulling headlines. They're saying all kinds of stuff. They're saying stuff that didn't happen. They're like, oh, he talked about his ex-wife. No, he did not. You know, they're piecing things together that make no sense. And I was getting so flustered every time I saw it. I was like, no, they're lying. But then I was like, but he doesn't care. He came on, he knew this was gonna happen. Yeah, he's like, he knew he's like, they're gonna do this. But he's obviously at a place that he's just like, I can't control that. I don't care. And I found that so admirable. And he's just like, past it. He's like, whatever. People are gonna say it. It's not true. And that's

• 54:30Dax Shepard?

It's also, I just find it really funny. I'll say something that's nuts and I'm like, that's gonna probably be something. And then I say something completely inane, like, we don't bathe our kid every night.

• 54:39Speaker 01

  Right.

• 54:39Dax Shepard?

And then all of a sudden, like, the mom blogs are like, their kids are filthy. I'm like, that's the thing you're out of, I'm talking about smoking crack and robbing liquor stores. No one's interested in that, but I didn't wash my kid.

• 54:50Speaker 01

Yeah, it's almost funny. You almost just have to like, see it as funny. Yeah, cuz it's so ridiculous.

• 54:55Speaker 02

Like I said, I don't lose any sleep. I'm just trying to make my life easier.

• 54:58Speaker 01

  Yeah, that makes total sense.

• 55:00Dax Shepard?

Okay, now this falls back under the umbrella of, I think you lived through a time that current people would not have to live through. And so if you don't want to talk about it, fine, but I do want to talk about Batman. Cuz I feel like that must have been kind of a scarring experience.

• 55:14Speaker 02

  Batman itself?

• 55:15Dax Shepard?

Just that whole experience of doing that movie. I didn't know any of this stuff. I just read about it today. People were calling you terrible names. Paparazzis were shouting.

• 55:23Speaker 02

I was running through the airport.

• 55:25Dax Shepard?

  Yes, that's crazy.

• 55:26Speaker 02

They're standing there to like, answer questions and then get you onto the plane. Behind there is a little square box and I would hide in there while they would scream at me.

• 55:34Speaker 01

  It was horrendous.

• 55:35Dax Shepard?

And you were how old? Twenty-two-ish?

• 55:36Speaker 02

  No, I was eighteen.

• 55:39Dax Shepard?

  You were quite young.

• 55:40Speaker 02

  I was babes.

• 55:41Dax Shepard?

And people were thinking it's fine to do a full page article about your physique.

• 55:47Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, all the time. And I was half the size I am now.

• 55:50Speaker 01

  It's so sick.

• 55:52Dax Shepard?

When all that was going on, were you just like, oh, I guess this goes with the territory? Or were you like, this is brutal?

• 55:59Speaker 02

No, that was pretty brutal, but also there's worse things in the world. People are dying and things and I try to keep all that perspective that it's a high-class problem I supposed to have.

• 56:07Dax Shepard?

  I think that's bullshit.

• 56:08Speaker 02

  You do?

• 56:08Speaker 01

  I know, I do too.

• 56:10Dax Shepard?

I think that's bullshit. I think that's people afraid that someone's gonna go, "Oh boo hoo, you're rich." Being chased through the airport, being called-

• 56:16Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 56:17Speaker 02

  Fat girl. It's clever.

• 56:19Dax Shepard?

  Is fucking rough.

• 56:21Speaker 02

It was awful. Do you know what I would say back? I mean, in my head, because I didn't want to talk to them. But like, how do you go home at night and speak to your children?

• 56:28Speaker 01

  I know.

• 56:29Speaker 02

Like today, your daughter is a huge fan of mine.

• 56:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 56:32Speaker 02

Tell her, "Oh, I told the person that you love and admire that she's fat today." Does that feel good?

• 56:36Dax Shepard?

I met her today. I called her a fat girl.

• 56:38Speaker 02

And also, what does that tell your daughter she's supposed to be? If this body's not okay, then what body is okay? It's mental.

• 56:45Speaker 01

Did people defend you, like, in the airport?

• 56:47Speaker 02

I don't know. I was hiding with a thing over my head. I mean, it was really intense and sucked.

• 56:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I don't think you need to make light of that. I think that's a very like-

• 56:55Speaker 01

  That's traumatizing.

• 56:56Dax Shepard?

Traumatic. You've lost total control of your environment.

• 56:58Speaker 02

It definitely had its effects, for sure. And I do think now, you know how you have bad comments? Somebody gets angry at you about whatever?

• 57:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:06Speaker 02

And then all these other people come to your fight and they're like, "Fuck you, this is..."

• 57:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:10Speaker 02

You know, and you're just like, "Yeah!" You don't have to say anything. Other people come back and they go, "No." And you're just like, "Great."

• 57:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, thank you.

• 57:16Speaker 02

Yeah, like, yeah, and I've learned over the years, like, if you're on social media, you can't take any of that. Do you remember when you first started doing it? How you'd have 99% be nice? And then there'd just be one thing and it would just get under your skin? Because we were new to it. And then I suddenly went, "Oh, who cares? This is ridiculous."

• 57:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 57:35Speaker 02

So you do get used to accepting things.

• 57:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I do terrible with it. I'll say in the moment, "I don't care." And then three hours later, I'm driving on the 101 and I'm like rereading the thing I read and defending myself.

• 57:46Speaker 02

  You're fighting with yourself.

• 57:47Dax Shepard?

  Yes, and I'm like-

• 57:47Speaker 02

  You're speaking aloud, yeah.

• 57:48Dax Shepard?

"No, this does affect me." I'm like, "I'm full of shit if I think, 'Well, I don't know who that is.'" Well, I'm thinking about it three hours later.

• 57:53Speaker 02

  I know.

• 57:54Speaker 01

I have a question I was just thinking about. So because of this, that's crazy. Being chased through an airport, being called this, having articles about you.

• 58:02Speaker 02

  By like, eight men.

• 58:03Speaker 01

  You were preyed on.

• 58:05Speaker 02

Why were they even allowed in the airport? Like, you can't have people in the airport anymore, I think.

• 58:08Speaker 01

  Not anymore.

• 58:09Dax Shepard?

  Not anymore. Post 9/11.

• 58:10Speaker 02

They were allowed to come all the way up to the gate.

• 58:12Dax Shepard?

Up to the gate, yes. So Silver Linings, I don't like to talk about, yeah.

• 58:17Speaker 02

  Thank God.

• 58:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:18Dax Shepard?

They're not fair. They're not fair when they talk about 9/11.

• 58:21Speaker 01

They're not bringing up the good parts.

• 58:23Dax Shepard?

There's been a lot of upside.

• 58:24Speaker 01

And you're getting praised by people who you respect for calling you strong.

• 58:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:30Speaker 01

Which is a great thing. Is it hard for you to be vulnerable and sensitive? Because you take so much pride in being strong and I'm not gonna let that bother me?

• 58:38Speaker 02

I mean, I think I'm extremely vulnerable and sensitive. I'm probably too sensitive. Anyone who knows me, I'm an open book. That's why I have to watch myself because I'm so open. I never used to pay attention to any of that and I used to just be completely open. I mean, the thing that I would think before I would get here is I'm gonna have too much fun with you. Think that I can just say anything because it's enjoyable.

• 59:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 59:01Speaker 02

When I was a young girl, I thought, well, I have to tell the truth and I wanna be open. Like, that's how I am. So I would never have any way of being responsible for those things. But I've just learned over time that there are some things that are yours. I do think I'm healthy enough that I don't need to expose everything.

• 59:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 59:19Speaker 02

That's for your friends. That's for fun conversations. That's maybe for when you're dying, you wanna write a book, or when everyone's dead. So it doesn't matter. I sometimes think we all vomit a lot of details and information out there that I don't know is really helpful or needed. It's this sort of chaotic unleashing.

• 59:35Dax Shepard?

I come from such a specific background where it was imperative to get sober, to shed that. I've had 21 years of going into rooms with strangers and they're all dead honest. And like, I like the results of that so much. That to me, to experience that and then to leave there and then have any amount of shame about anything about me felt so incongruous. I enjoy being that way more than I enjoy being protective. And also, I recognize it's not for everybody.

• 1:00:04Speaker 01

There are things that are yours. We're really open on this show.

• 1:00:07Speaker 02

He's not gonna tell you the ins and outs of your relationship with your wife.

• 1:00:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00:11Speaker 02

You're not gonna tell you, you just aren't.

• 1:00:13Dax Shepard?

Generally, anything that involves someone else.

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:00:15Dax Shepard?

I'm very protective of. And then I expose my mom a lot too, but she's giving me her blessing. Okay, here's what I'm getting at. I'm impressed you didn't just quit altogether.

• 1:00:24Speaker 02

Well, now I have a little bit of anxiety. Not real, just a slight thought that you guys think I'm super guarded.

• 1:00:30Dax Shepard?

  Oh, no, no, no, no.

• 1:00:32Speaker 01

Not at all. Not at all.

• 1:00:33Dax Shepard?

No, I don't find you to be. Handoff or anything. I've just seen you police yourself a few times and I wondered if there was any reason behind it, just out of curiosity.

• 1:00:40Speaker 02

I think the main thing in a nutshell is there's so much going on in my life currently and I just like to stay with what's happening. I just did an entire press tour in New York. I have four things coming out and the only thing they're talking about is Clueless.

• 1:00:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:00:53Speaker 02

And at some point, it's like, if I do an hour interview and nothing comes out of it other than Clueless, you're just kind of like, wait a second.

• 1:01:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:01:01Speaker 02

Do you know what I mean? And I'm so happy and grateful that everybody loves it.

• 1:01:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:04Speaker 02

  But these things are great.

• 1:01:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:06Speaker 02

Begonia with Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons is amazing.

• 1:01:10Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:01:10Speaker 02

Irish Blood is really, really good and Pretty Things, like, these are good things.

• 1:01:14Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, yes.

• 1:01:15Speaker 02

So if nobody gets to see them because they're so like, ah, Clueless.

• 1:01:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So I come into this with anxiety because my fear is you must feel that way.

• 1:01:25Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:01:25Dax Shepard?

I'm not dumb. If I were you, I would be like, okay, yes, shut the fuck up about Clueless.

• 1:01:31Speaker 02

  No, I love it.

• 1:01:31Dax Shepard?

I loved it, but also I don't want to talk about it for the rest of my life.

• 1:01:34Speaker 02

I don't mind talking about it for the rest of my life if the other things can be talked about.

• 1:01:38Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:01:40Dax Shepard?

  My thing was Punk'd, right?

• 1:01:41Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:01:41Dax Shepard?

It didn't matter how many years after I had done that and I'm doing movies.

• 1:01:45Speaker 02

And things you're proud of, that you worked hard on.

• 1:01:47Dax Shepard?

Yes, there was 10 years where I was like, shut the fuck up about Punk and stop asking me what it's like to act. I already was acting on that, you know?

• 1:01:54Speaker 02

Yeah, you had to explain to them that you were an actor.

• 1:01:56Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:01:56Speaker 02

  Because they didn't know.

• 1:01:57Dax Shepard?

Huge chip on my shoulder. And what I hated about that, when I came to peace with it all is like, I robbed the whole experience of that from myself.

• 1:02:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:06Dax Shepard?

Because I just didn't want you to bring it up in an interview and I was sick of talking about it. And no, I wasn't friends with Ashton Kutcher. He didn't put his friend in it. You know, like I auditioned, you know, all these like hangups I had about it.

• 1:02:16Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:02:16Dax Shepard?

And at one point I was like, dude, you're on the show that was this cultural phenomenon. You were a big part of the reason.

• 1:02:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:22Dax Shepard?

And fuck, yeah. And I've come to love it.

• 1:02:24Speaker 02

So my thing is, I don't mind that. What I guess I mean is, like we said, if you put out one thing, you were talking about blackface.

• 1:02:30Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yes, yes, yes, yes.

• 1:02:30Speaker 02

I don't know what word I said, but maybe I said, oh, I don't know what I said, but whatever it was, let's say that went out.

• 1:02:38Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:02:38Speaker 02

Then like, that's all they get. Nothing else gets talked about.

• 1:02:42Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:02:42Speaker 02

It doesn't matter, but it only matters because I've just spent a whole year dedicated to my work.

• 1:02:48Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

Where that involves family and sacrifices and like, this is your passion.

• 1:02:54Dax Shepard?

Living in another country for three months.

• 1:02:55Speaker 02

For it all to just be outshined by some dumb thing. That's what I guess it is.

• 1:03:01Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah, yeah. I get that.

• 1:03:02Speaker 01

I do too. I think though, and this is very upsetting, but I think the truth is currently also just because the media cycle is this fast. Like, so that could be a headline.

• 1:03:13Speaker 02

For a second and then they forget.

• 1:03:15Speaker 01

Four hours and then there's a new one.

• 1:03:17Speaker 02

  No, I know.

• 1:03:17Speaker 01

  Which is also.

• 1:03:18Dax Shepard?

Our president will probably do something that'll take the.

• 1:03:21Speaker 01

  Definitely.

• 1:03:22Dax Shepard?

  Temperature.

• 1:03:22Speaker 01

But also what I think is wild is now you see a headline, somebody's name pops up and then for some reason they do then see the project. Like, there's this weird thing where it's like, oh, this person's in the zeitgeist again. Oh, there she is in this movie. I'll watch it. We're so fragmented now and weirdly, again, I kind of hate this, but being out there in general, I think is positive. It's that like horrible old thing. All press is good press is gross and currently I think kind of really true.

• 1:03:56Speaker 02

I've had things get derailed though by things that have come out for sure. And it's just a bummer when you work on something really hard.

• 1:04:03Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:04:03Dax Shepard?

Well, but what I was going to ask is you've got the number one hit comedy of the summer. Then you're in Batman, the biggest franchise and we don't even have Marvel yet. If I were you, I was like, okay, I'm doing as good as you can do and I hate it.

• 1:04:18Dax Shepard?

Like, this is as good as it gets. I'm the lead of enormous movies that are successful and I hate it. And then I'm wondering if also you're out there shining a light on a lot of problems that need addressing, were you shocked to find out what angers people so much about activists? How have you synthesized why activists tend to anger people so much? Like, what is your conclusion after years of being an activist?

• 1:04:44Speaker 02

I found, because at first, you know, it's like, when you discover. What's going on about anything? And I was young, so I discovered what was happening in the animal world and how our food production was affecting people who were starving all over the world. And nobody cares. Nobody talks about it. And the earth problems and all of these things that this one thing could affect four big, huge areas, right? Animal cruelty, people starving to death, health and environment, all at the same time. It just seemed like a good, you know, when you're bowling, what's that called?

• 1:05:15Dax Shepard?

  Strike.

• 1:05:16Speaker 02

Strike. Just get it all with the one thing. It's so efficient. But I realized when I learned all this stuff, it was so eye opening. I wanted to run around screaming, rape, murder, fire, everywhere I went.

• 1:05:26Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:05:27Speaker 02

And nobody wants to hear that. They don't have room for it. So I don't know if it was Howard Lyman, he made tons of money as a cattle farmer. He had crazy heart problems and was in the hospital about to die. He had a moment where he kind of came back. They told him, the food that you're eating is what caused this. And he had this huge revelation, changed his diet, changed everything. And he's amazing man who's been going around telling everybody his story. Well, at one point, I think I went to an animal rights conference. I think it was in the year 2000. He was there. And I remember him saying something like, it's better to wait to be asked about this stuff, rather than sort of going around.

• 1:06:01Dax Shepard?

  Prosthetic.

• 1:06:02Speaker 02

Yeah. You're gonna have way better results. And also, I thought, oh, God, that's such a relief.

• 1:06:07Dax Shepard?

You'd feel guilty if you hadn't shined a light on that.

• 1:06:09Speaker 02

Yeah. And I remember my husband saying, we're not together anymore, but we would go to a party. This is when I was like 21. And I was newly vegan. And he sort of would say, is there anything you can talk about besides that? You seem like really stressed out when you leave. And I'm like, I know. So he was right. But I didn't know how. It became a relief when I wrote my book, The Kind Diet.

• 1:06:29Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:06:30Speaker 02

Because I was like, look, I'm gonna write everything I have to say here. And if you want to read it, you can. And if you don't want to, you don't have to. And now I don't have to talk about it anymore.

• 1:06:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:38Speaker 02

And so I can promote it. I can tell people when they ask me questions. That's where it all is.

• 1:06:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:44Speaker 02

And I don't have to answer the stupid, you know, a lot of people are just sort of jabbing you.

• 1:06:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah, they want to have a debate with you about it.

• 1:06:49Speaker 02

Yeah. And I can tell right away if they're actually interested in a real conversation or not. So it's sort of like, oh, if you're interested, just read this. I don't need to spend my evening. It's a lot of energy.

• 1:06:59Dax Shepard?

But if I were you, I think I would be feeling like. I'm just saying something to try to help.

• 1:07:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:05Dax Shepard?

And everyone's so mad about it. What's going on? Cause I've had this experience where we're visiting my mom and my stepdad who's now passed. And Kristen mentions, wash the apple first. There's a lot of pesticides on the apple. I hear my stepdad in the kitchen. He's like, Jesus fucking Christ. Now we can't even eat apples? Like he was just so upset. And I was like, what's going on in Barton's mind right now? He loves Kristen to death.

• 1:07:30Speaker 02

  Well, he feels defensive.

• 1:07:30Dax Shepard?

  He feels judged.

• 1:07:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:32Dax Shepard?

He's just like, he's bad. If we do this, we must think you're stupid for doing that. That's a kernel that could definitely happen. So you can probably tell by looking at me, I'm into lifting weights and I eat a lot of meat. I have a lot of accounts I follow. I'm not vegan, but also I don't care if someone's vegan. What I can't understand is people who fucking hate vegans.

• 1:07:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:52Dax Shepard?

Cause they eat meat. I don't understand why vegans hate meat eaters. That makes a little more sense to me. But another one is gas car, electric car. Just don't drive an electric car. I'm super into cars and people that are into cars, they don't just don't buy an electric car. They hate electric cars. All their posts are about they fucking hate electric cars. They want them to be made illegal. I don't understand hating something, cause.

• 1:08:17Speaker 01

Hating the person that's trying to do better is really tough for me. I understand the opposite way more. Again, that's tough because there's judgment and it's just not going to work to judge people. But to be like, how dare you drive an electric car? It's like, it is better. What's to hate?

• 1:08:33Speaker 02

This is so confusing to me because I'm, I'm not really.

• 1:08:36Dax Shepard?

  Dialed into the motorsports community?

• 1:08:38Speaker 02

Yeah. I have experienced people in my years where they're like, you're vegan? Why are those shoes vegan? You know, and you're like.

• 1:08:45Dax Shepard?

Putting you through a purity test?

• 1:08:46Speaker 02

Yes, they are, but let's just pretend they're not for a second. Does the veganness go away? Choosing this way of eating, you save so many animal. Like I did this because I love animals, period. End of story. But once I did, I ditched my asthma inhaler. I had allergy shots twice a week. I was taking antibiotics two or three times a year for bronchitis.

• 1:09:06Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:09:06Speaker 02

I had acne everywhere and I, after Batman, was what they called a little pudgy. Right? Like, or some people said, fat girl. And I changed all of it. All of this went away. My skin was glowing. My eyes were white. My nails, you couldn't bend them. It was like so strong. Everything changed about my health.

• 1:09:24Dax Shepard?

  All positive.

• 1:09:25Speaker 02

Yeah. And then I did research and was like, wait a second. Bruce Lee was vegan. Wait, Naratilova. There were some athletes who did it for performance. It helped with inflammation. It helped with recovery. And it gave you longer lasting performance. And then I started to learn that there was all this science. And that's why I wrote the book, The Kind Diet, because there was all this science and medical research that supported this idea. So it was this magical thing that was happening to me had happened to people who had cancer, who had had heart disease, who had diabetes, who had lupus, who had MS. So I was like, oh, this is interesting. I didn't know. I remember crossing myself, and I'm Jewish, but going, I didn't know if I was gonna be well. But I couldn't look myself in the mirror one more day and say, you're a good person, you love animals, but it's okay with you how they're tortured and mutilated.

• 1:10:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it's completely incongruous.

• 1:10:13Speaker 02

It was too hypocritical for me and I just couldn't do it anymore. So that's why I changed. But all these things started to happen to me. Then I learned about the environment, which I did not understand that connection at the time. And then I started to learning about all the starving children all over the world and the people who are dying. And I was like, this choice is the most efficient way to knock out all these problems at once. You can't solve everything, but you can solve a lot here. And even if people just do it more than not is better. I feel like it's been great for me and I loved writing the books, Kind Mama, Helping Mommies Get Pregnant. And I just really found a way to harness this thing that I cared so passionately about and dive into that.

• 1:15:13Dax Shepard?

I'm impressed you didn't just bail. Because if you're getting heat from like both sides, some part of me would go...

• 1:15:19Speaker 02

  What heat?

• 1:15:20Dax Shepard?

You're getting all the attention at the airport, which is totally unpleasant.

• 1:15:25Dax Shepard?

Imagine when you're sharing the causes you care about, people are being critical of your activist work. And how at that point do you go like, I just fucking give up. I give up on all of it.

• 1:15:34Speaker 02

That activism stuff was so crystal clear to me, you know, especially once I wrote my book. It was too rewarding. There was a man who had come to the first signing. And then he came to a signing two, three years later when I went to paperback. And he goes, you don't remember me? And I was like, I'm sorry, I don't. He said, because I've lost a hundred pounds. I'm off every medication I had.

• 1:15:53Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 1:15:54Speaker 02

And he had changed his life.

• 1:15:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:15:56Speaker 02

And another time I was at the theater, I mean, this happens a lot, but people say they love Cher and Clueless every single day, everywhere I go. And that is really lovely. Or they've seen this movie, or they've seen that movie. And that's really lovely. But nothing is more lovely than a woman who comes over to me and says, I couldn't get pregnant. And I read your book and I got pregnant and thank you. We start crying. That's the juice.

• 1:16:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:16:18Speaker 02

So that I was not gonna escape. And I guess what happened with the acting was that even though there were hard parts of it.

• 1:16:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:16:24Speaker 02

I did sort of go away. I wrote for a long time. I started doing other things.

• 1:16:28Dax Shepard?

We did a ton of theater, I noticed.

• 1:16:30Speaker 02

I did a ton of theater and the theater got me back into the acting.

• 1:16:33Dax Shepard?

That was kind of my hunch from looking at this from the outside going, oh yeah, that version kind of sucked, but I love acting. I can go do this here without all that.

• 1:16:43Speaker 02

Which I kind of forgot. You forget you're an actor.

• 1:16:46Dax Shepard?

Also, money enters the picture and that's a very powerful force.

• 1:16:49Speaker 02

Complicated. But I did love aspects, like Benicio and I had an incredible, I mean, there was a lot of hard parts of it, but we also had a great experience and being able to learn on the job, the way that I did. And then I got to do Love's Labor's Lost with Kenneth Branagh and I got to do things like that. Now, I made a lot of dumb choices along the way, for sure. That's the only way we can do it. We just gotta learn from the mistakes. I feel like I came back in a different way. I got to do all my theater and through the theater, I got to just work with really cool artists.

• 1:17:19Speaker 01

And you got to love acting again for what it was.

• 1:17:21Dax Shepard?

Okay. You did Reptile again with Benicio.

• 1:17:24Speaker 02

  Yes, that was amazing.

• 1:17:26Dax Shepard?

  Are you guys the same?

• 1:17:27Speaker 02

We are. It's so interesting, our relationship. And I don't want to speak for him, but I know that he trusts me.

• 1:17:34Dax Shepard?

I would feel very rewarded by that.

• 1:17:36Speaker 02

I was so excited when they asked for me to do this. I remember saying to him, are you sure? It was so great.

• 1:17:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And the killing of a sacred deer, which is incredible. How did that come to be?

• 1:17:47Speaker 02

Killing of a sacred deer, I did an audition. I got a call from my agent, who's very good and feisty. And he said, you need to show up in 24 hours or something ridiculous to this audition. Francine, this amazing casting director, I believe, had seen me in a play I'd done on Broadway, the last one that I was in. And so she brought me in for this and Brian, my agent, said, now you're not going to know who this is because you never know anything. And you're not going to know who any of these people are, but just go watch The Lobster real quick and be ready and show up to this audition. So I watched The Lobster and then I did this audition. And then some weeks later, I got a call that Yorgos wanted to speak to me. And I was in Australia at the time with my five year old son. I got on the Zoom thing with him

• 1:18:32Speaker 02

and I thought it was another step in the process.

• 1:18:35Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:18:36Speaker 02

So I was kind of nervous.

• 1:18:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:18:37Speaker 02

But it wasn't another, I mean, it was in that I think he was checking I wasn't awful. As a human.

• 1:18:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's smart.

• 1:18:44Speaker 02

Yeah, I think he just wanted to check. And then in that call, he said, I'd really like you to do this.

• 1:18:48Dax Shepard?

  Was it so exciting?

• 1:18:49Speaker 02

  It really was.

• 1:18:50Dax Shepard?

Yeah, if I had just seen The Lobster.

• 1:18:52Speaker 02

Because now I went back and watched Dog Tooth. And have you seen Dog? You need to watch Dog Tooth.

• 1:18:58Dax Shepard?

  Dog Tooth.

• 1:18:58Speaker 02

Dog Tooth is his first film and it is so freaking brilliant. It's Greek and there's subtitles. So anyway, that was just incredible. There's moments in your career that just feel so exciting.

• 1:19:10Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:19:11Speaker 02

The crush felt so exciting because it was my first movie and I felt like I was with a family. And Carrie always was so nice. It was such a juicy part. And then I remember Love's Labour's Lost felt like such a big deal to me because it was Kenneth Branagh.

• 1:19:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:23Speaker 02

And it was Shakespeare, you know, and that was such an exciting thing to have happen. On Broadway with Laura Linney in this play was an incredible experience with Daniel Sullivan as the director.

• 1:19:34Dax Shepard?

They give you just enough stuff to keep you going.

• 1:19:36Speaker 02

And David Mamet. We're doing a play with David Mamet. It was incredible. That was a highlight. So this was one of those. And then I started to see all his films and I'm obsessed with his films. And so I'm so grateful to get to be in another one.

• 1:19:48Dax Shepard?

Yeah, how cool. He did, um.

• 1:19:51Speaker 02

The favorite, he did Poor Things.

• 1:19:54Dax Shepard?

Poor Things, Poor Things. That was my favorite movie last year.

• 1:19:57Speaker 02

Yeah, Poor Things was so wonderful and Kinds of Kindness is so good, too.

• 1:20:02Speaker 01

I haven't seen that one yet.

• 1:20:03Dax Shepard?

I'm getting to have a Yorgos marathon, I think.

• 1:20:06Speaker 02

  It's worth it.

• 1:20:06Dax Shepard?

Okay, so you're in his new movie on, Halloween comes out.

• 1:20:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:10Dax Shepard?

  How do I say it?

• 1:20:11Speaker 02

  Begonia.

• 1:20:12Dax Shepard?

Begonia. Okay, Irish Blood. I called Monica.

• 1:20:17Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:20:17Dax Shepard?

From Nashville. I was watching it and I was like, you know, I was gonna watch one episode of this because we have Alicia coming and I'm on episode three and I can't fucking stop.

• 1:20:28Speaker 01

  He could not stop.

• 1:20:30Dax Shepard?

Yes. No, look, I had some issues with it and I only say that.

• 1:20:34Speaker 02

You can tell me all the issues.

• 1:20:35Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna tell you why I'm saying that because if you're me and you're watching and you have some issues at the beginning, I'm telling you, stick with it.

• 1:20:44Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:20:44Dax Shepard?

I'm allergic to things that are a little saccharine. I was just a little nervous about how emotional it was.

• 1:20:48Speaker 02

Is that with the dad part?

• 1:20:50Dax Shepard?

Yes, the flashback stuff when you're a little girl. All right, so just to set everything up, you come in at 10 years old and the house is trashed and dad's gone and you assume that he beat mom up.

• 1:21:00Speaker 01

Well, there are bruises. The mom has bruises and so the natural assumption is that.

• 1:21:05Dax Shepard?

This guy you loved and adored.

• 1:21:07Speaker 02

  Her, her.

• 1:21:07Dax Shepard?

So that's a very heartbreaking moment for you. You're a little girl. You grow up. You're very jaded when we meet you as an adult. You're a divorce attorney. You're an angry woman.

• 1:21:15Speaker 02

  Little bit. Tough. She's tough.

• 1:21:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, doesn't believe in love, can't find a partner she likes.

• 1:21:21Speaker 02

Well, she's not even looking, really.

• 1:21:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:24Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:21:24Dax Shepard?

You gotta spend the night, you're like, you gotta get the fuck out of here.

• 1:21:29Dax Shepard?

Get out of here as fast as you can. But you get sent this envelope and in it is a key and it is in Ireland and you, for some reason, decide I'm gonna go explore this. And when you get there, it's a key to a box. You discover that your father is dead. I think we can say that.

• 1:21:46Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:21:47Dax Shepard?

That's early enough. We need that for what this show's about, I think. Does it make you nervous?

• 1:21:51Speaker 02

  Yes and no.

• 1:21:53Dax Shepard?

  I think it's, I think it's, yeah, I think it's worth it.

• 1:21:56Speaker 02

If you think it's good, go for it.

• 1:21:57Dax Shepard?

I'll tell you why. Because now, now we've got a mystery. We've got a whodunit. Dad has been killed and you have been left some clues by dad. Okay, now here's the gear that it kicked into for me that made me insatiable for it, which was, did you ever watch Veronica Mars?

• 1:22:13Speaker 02

No. Do I need to see Veronica?

• 1:22:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:22:16Speaker 02

  Wait, is that with Kristen?

• 1:22:17Dax Shepard?

Yes, that's her first show. And let me just tell you, I start dating her. I know she was on a show called Veronica Mars. I know it's about a teenage sleuth.

• 1:22:27Speaker 01

  It's on CW or WB.

• 1:22:28Dax Shepard?

We've been together for like four months and we're in New York shooting a movie together. And I'm like, I'm gonna have to watch this fucking show. I got the DVDs, same thing. Fourth episode, she walks in the room, she's like, you wanna go out to Spotted Pick? I'm like, shut the fuck up! Ron's about fucking blesses. I got so sucked in. You must watch it, cuz this is very much a grown up Veronica Mars. Because you're not built to be an investigator, you're a lawyer. But you're tough and you're shrewd and you're smart and you seem to be completely fearless to walk into any situation. And then all of a sudden, this really good noir kind of investigation happens. And it's very Ron Mars, which is a very high compliment, I'll say.

• 1:23:09Speaker 01

  Thank you.

• 1:23:10Speaker 02

Oh, I'm so happy that you love it. That makes me so happy.

• 1:23:13Dax Shepard?

And it's on Acorn, which I didn't know about Acorn. Did you know about Acorn? Aaron's obsessed with Acorn. So Acorn specializes and they just show British shows.

• 1:23:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:23:24Dax Shepard?

And Aaron watches every single show.

• 1:23:26Speaker 01

  Aaron is his best friend.

• 1:23:28Dax Shepard?

Soulmate, best friend. So Acorn just plays British stuff. And this is an original for them. So Ireland, how long were you there?

• 1:23:36Speaker 02

  Three months.

• 1:23:37Dax Shepard?

And had you been prior to that?

• 1:23:38Speaker 02

Yeah, I had. I loved Ireland. I'd been my, I don't like saying ex-husband. It sounds so horrible. The man that I was married to for 20 years.

• 1:23:47Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:23:47Speaker 01

  It's a great run.

• 1:23:49Dax Shepard?

I know, I say this all the time, like if Kristen and I ever split up, I would only describe this as still an enormously successful relationship.

• 1:23:55Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:23:56Dax Shepard?

Like, we loved each other to death. We had these two beautiful children. We had this great time together.

• 1:24:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:24:01Dax Shepard?

And I would really feel like I was dishonoring it if ever we were not together.

• 1:24:05Speaker 02

I will always love him so much. He lives across the street from me, by the way.

• 1:24:09Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really? Oh, that's wonderful.

• 1:24:11Speaker 02

He used to live down the street, but now he lives across the street.

• 1:24:15Speaker 01

  That's so lovely.

• 1:24:17Speaker 02

  I will always love him.

• 1:24:18Dax Shepard?

You can't be together with someone for 21 years and not.

• 1:24:21Speaker 02

Yeah, I love him so much. And sometimes, this again, I probably shouldn't say. I was walking the dog. My dog loves him because he gives him meat. Like, he just gives him, like, steak. So my dog's, like, pulling me up to his house. I get into the house and he's standing there in his underwear and I'm, like, noticing all the things.

• 1:24:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:38Speaker 02

And I'm just like, this is so interesting. Like, I'm, like, still attracted. Like, I'm sure we're both attracted to each other.

• 1:24:43Speaker 01

  Of course, for life.

• 1:24:45Speaker 02

  We love each other.

• 1:24:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:47Speaker 02

And that was my partner for 20 something years. So there I am, just like, this is so weird.

• 1:24:51Speaker 01

  So funny.

• 1:24:52Dax Shepard?

Also, if you were, like, four glasses of wine deep in your house and you looked out the window and you're like, I just gotta cross the street to get to my house.

• 1:24:59Speaker 01

  So close, so close.

• 1:25:01Speaker 02

But the reality is, we can't, so we won't.

• 1:25:03Speaker 01

I will say, that's really brave to make a decision like that when it's easier to just stay in something that's not really working or isn't right, but that you've been together for so long and there's love there. It's hard to make that decision.

• 1:25:16Speaker 02

It was heartbreaking. It was heartbreaking. We were both in love with each other when we broke up. And it's just a horrible thing, but we co-parent beautifully. Why am I talking about him? What were we just talking about? Oh, he and I had gone on a trip. We went to Ireland. The destination was the MTV Music Awards of Europe, like, Ireland. Dennis Hopper was there and it was wild and fun. We decided to fly into, I think, Shannon Airport and drove. So we took two weeks to get to the MTV Music Awards. And I remember being like, we need to live here. It's so incredible.

• 1:25:47Speaker 01

  Oh, lovely.

• 1:25:47Dax Shepard?

When you were in those Hollywood-y scenes, could you enjoy yourself and drop in and be a movie star? Could you pop on that persona? Like, if you're at the MTV Movie Awards, could you have fun?

• 1:25:57Speaker 02

Music stuff was fun because everyone was more wild and feisty and I'm like a hippie punk rock weirdo. My husband was in a punk rock band. And so we were rock and roll mixed with my environmental, I call it political, but my entire thinking of wanting to know the truth and being dedicated to love and kindness and trying to make this world better. That's my rebellious fucked-up-ness. So I had this sort of hippie punk rock and I don't. Know how to do small talk, so I'm useless in a situation where I have to engage about, you know, like, I want to go deep right away and I want to know.

• 1:26:34Dax Shepard?

  Same.

• 1:26:35Speaker 02

Me too. And so I did well at music things because it feels like there's more. Gritty. It's more gritty, it's more wild. I did well at things like, I remember I went to the GQ Awards in London and I brought Timothy Spall with me as my date.

• 1:26:48Dax Shepard?

  Who's he?

• 1:26:48Speaker 02

He's an amazing English actor and he was in Love's Labour Sauce with me and we are dear friends. He came to our wedding. He's a lovely man, but that's who I wanted as my date. And if you have a visual of Timothy Spall, he's now sober and still the sweetest man on the planet. But like, you know, we were a little odd couple.

• 1:27:04Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:27:05Speaker 02

  At this thing.

• 1:27:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:27:06Speaker 02

He's a lot older than me. I wasn't showing up with Johnny Depp or Brad Pitt. Right.

• 1:27:11Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:27:12Speaker 02

Not that I wouldn't have been open to that. It just didn't work out that way.

• 1:27:15Dax Shepard?

You don't have to say names, but after Clueless, did you get any random calls from like an agent, like so and so wants your number? You don't have to give any names, but did you have those calls?

• 1:27:25Speaker 02

  Well, by older gentlemen.

• 1:27:27Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:27:28Speaker 02

  Oh, actually, hang on.

• 1:27:31Dax Shepard?

  Older gentleman.

• 1:27:32Speaker 02

I can tell you about them later. There was one, two, I think, oh, three, three. I'm gonna go with there's three. What I'll tell you when we get out of here.

• 1:27:44Dax Shepard?

  Okay, okay.

• 1:27:46Speaker 02

  But it wasn't like.

• 1:27:47Dax Shepard?

Wasn't gross. It was just like.

• 1:27:48Speaker 02

  No, it was fine.

• 1:27:49Dax Shepard?

  Let's have dinner.

• 1:27:49Speaker 02

Yeah, some of them were under the guise of let's work together.

• 1:27:52Dax Shepard?

Oh, sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the move.

• 1:27:55Speaker 02

But there was nothing inappropriate with any one of them.

• 1:27:57Dax Shepard?

Okay, so now this is back to your husband. I was with a woman for nine years before Kristen and I had this huge fear when we broke up, oh man, that's the last person I'll ever date that knew me before.

• 1:28:13Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:28:14Dax Shepard?

But I liked the notion that I had been with someone that had seen the whole thing, that really knew me and still liked me. Did you have that fear when you got divorced at all? Like, man, the one person on earth that knew me from the jump.

• 1:28:24Speaker 02

Well, he didn't. I met him when I was 21. He kind of caught me at the highest of the moments. Yeah, that's true.

• 1:28:30Dax Shepard?

  Congrats to him.

• 1:28:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:28:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, what a step.

• 1:28:34Speaker 02

But I did have the feeling and still do of how do you find that partnership and that love ever again? He's my emergency contact. I'm his emergency contact.

• 1:28:44Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:28:45Speaker 02

  You know?

• 1:28:45Speaker 01

  He's your soulmate, really.

• 1:28:47Speaker 02

I think we're gonna be something forever. I don't know what soulmate really is or means, because if we were soulmates, wouldn't we be together?

• 1:28:54Speaker 01

Well, not necessarily. I think soulmates take lots of different shapes and I think you can have multiple, but I also think it's just like, we're connected and we're gonna be connected forever.

• 1:29:05Speaker 02

I remember dating after having been separated for a long time and thinking if I liked someone, it felt I was betraying our relationship.

• 1:29:13Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:29:13Speaker 02

  Even though we were divorced.

• 1:29:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:29:16Speaker 02

I would get teary eyed like, oh, I like someone. This is crazy. I'm betraying our love. It's insane.

• 1:29:20Dax Shepard?

How about would you feel guilty? Like I remember with Kristen and be like, I want to tell her this story about Bree when she was a little girl and found a tampon in the toilet and came running out and was screaming, there's a bloody bone in the toilet to her whole family. Like she had never seen a tampon. And there's like a hundred of those. There's all these funny stories you accumulate and you're like, is it cool that I tell my new girlfriend this adorable story about my ex-girlfriend? Or you have like

• 1:29:45Speaker 01

  I think it is.

• 1:29:45Dax Shepard?

  jokes that are fun.

• 1:29:47Speaker 01

But it's complex across the board because does Kristen want to hear about this story? Maybe not. Also, is it fair to breathe?

• 1:29:54Dax Shepard?

  Yes, right.

• 1:29:55Speaker 01

It's like, that's my thing with this person. Do I bring it over here? Like, it's complicated.

• 1:29:59Dax Shepard?

  But if it's like Aaron.

• 1:30:00Speaker 01

Of course. Well, there's no complication there.

• 1:30:03Dax Shepard?

I know, but what feels crazy is, yes, of course, anything Aaron and I have worked on for the last 30 years, that's now part of my vernacular is gonna come out and I have no issue with it.

• 1:30:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:30:12Dax Shepard?

Because he's a platonic friend. But also I have nine years of this stuff with Bree. That's part of who I am. And it feels complicated at times.

• 1:30:19Speaker 02

I feel like each partner has to kind of hear about all the partners eventually, right?

• 1:30:24Dax Shepard?

I don't mind at all personally. Like I'm just, I've not been jealous of her actions.

• 1:30:27Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's just your life.

• 1:30:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Okay. So were you in Dublin shooting?

• 1:30:32Speaker 02

We were shooting All Around Wicklow in Dublin. I got to live in this really cute little village that I love so much. I love Ireland. I've always loved Ireland. And getting to work there was really, really incredible. The people are very different there. They're so warm. They're so generous of spirit. They're very happy. And when they're not happy, they're funny. There's just so much character. Something's going right in Ireland. You know, they had the potato famine, for God's sakes. They should be pissed off.

• 1:30:58Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:30:58Speaker 02

  But they're doing great.

• 1:31:01Speaker 02

You know, like you go to other countries and you can really see the hardship on people at times. And they don't feel that way to me. They feel just so alive, so grateful and so funny. And they're so clever.

• 1:31:15Dax Shepard?

You did six. When do you get a sense if you'll get to do more?

• 1:31:18Speaker 02

I don't know. We started tinkering. I was lucky enough, they came to me this really early. So I got to be involved with all the key creative elements. So I worked on the edit extensively. I worked on every script extensively. We're doing it differently this time if we get to go again, so that I can just focus on the acting when I show up, because it was really a lot.

• 1:31:38Dax Shepard?

Well, I was hooked, so you should feel like that was time well spent.

• 1:31:41Speaker 02

I'm impressed that you watched it at all.

• 1:31:43Dax Shepard?

Oh, no, I loved it. I loved it. In fact, it's rare that I call Monica, if ever, and say like, oh, I'm fucking hooked. You got a twenty seven.

• 1:31:49Speaker 02

  I love that so much.

• 1:31:51Dax Shepard?

Well, Alicia, this has been lovely and you gave us so much time. And I really appreciate it. And I don't know if I was at that dinner, but I like to think I wasn't.

• 1:32:00Speaker 02

Let's just pretend you weren't or were.

• 1:32:02Speaker 01

Well, you remember it positively, so we'll pretend like it did happen.

• 1:32:05Dax Shepard?

Okay, okay. All right, well, Alicia, I want everyone to watch Irish Blood. And then also get ready for Halloween, begonia.

• 1:32:12Speaker 02

And if you have any interest in an erotic thriller, it's out right now, Pretty Thing.

• 1:32:17Dax Shepard?

  I do like erotic thrillers.

• 1:32:19Speaker 01

  Yeah, great.

• 1:32:20Speaker 02

  It's Justin Kelly. He's a great filmmaker.

• 1:32:22Speaker 01

  Awesome.

• 1:32:23Dax Shepard?

So everyone watch Irish Blood. Thank you so much. I hope we get to do it again. This has been a blast.

• 1:32:27Speaker 02

This is so much fun. Thank you.

• 1:32:29Speaker 01

He is an armchair expert, but he makes mistakes all the time. Thank God Monica's here. She's gonna let him have the facts.

• 1:32:39Dax Shepard?

I'd like to begin with an update.

• 1:32:40Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:32:41Dax Shepard?

This was sent to us by Rob. And Rob received a message that said, "Hi, guys. I just saw this week's episode with my wife and saw that you were talking about Guar. I can make that date for Monica happen for real next week at the VIP opening of Guar's art show, September 12."

• 1:33:02Dax Shepard?

I love this. Blothar was just, Blothar is, I guess, the lead singer. The new lead singer. The new lead singer. Died in like 2014.

• 1:33:13Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 1:33:14Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:33:16Speaker 01

  Sorry for his loss.

• 1:33:17Dax Shepard?

What an incredible name, Blothar. But we're told, oh, here we go. Here we go. Blothar the Berserker is the current lead vocalist on occasional basis in the heavy metal band Guar. He appears as a stout, horned, pig-faced goblin.

• 1:33:37Speaker 01

  Just my type.

• 1:33:38Dax Shepard?

I'm now, that's what I want on my headstone. Here lies Dax Shepard, a stout, horned, pig-faced goblin. Holy shit. How hard would you laugh if you were walking to a cemetery and you saw that?

• 1:33:48Speaker 01

  Okay, so looks like

• 1:33:50Dax Shepard?

  You're in business.

• 1:33:51Speaker 01

  Something might be percolating here.

• 1:33:55Speaker 01

  With the Berserker.

• 1:33:57Dax Shepard?

  Blothar the Berserker.

• 1:33:58Speaker 01

So, I guess, like, keep everyone updated.

• 1:34:02Dax Shepard?

There's an age gap to contend with.

• 1:34:03Speaker 01

  There is.

• 1:34:04Dax Shepard?

  There's 56, Rob? Yeah, he's 56.

• 1:34:07Speaker 01

  Yeah, but.

• 1:34:08Dax Shepard?

Oh, 57 this month. Oh, okay.

• 1:34:10Speaker 01

  So he's 19 years.

• 1:34:12Dax Shepard?

  20-year window.

• 1:34:13Speaker 01

Yeah, look, age actually doesn't bother me.

• 1:34:17Dax Shepard?

  To a degree, right?

• 1:34:18Speaker 01

  To a degree.

• 1:34:19Dax Shepard?

Like, you want to spend more than a couple of years with someone.

• 1:34:23Speaker 01

Depends on how rich they are. Speaking of that, I have an update.

• 1:34:29Dax Shepard?

Oh, my gosh, I can't wait.

• 1:34:31Speaker 01

I am days away, days, from becoming a billionaire.

• 1:34:37Dax Shepard?

Oh, my goodness. How, boy. A lot happened in the five days since I saw you.

• 1:34:41Speaker 01

  I know, I'm sorry.

• 1:34:43Dax Shepard?

  What? Tell me.

• 1:34:45Speaker 01

I will be winning the lottery on Saturday.

• 1:34:47Dax Shepard?

Okay, and it is for a billion bucks?

• 1:34:51Speaker 01

Yes. Okay, so I've never participated in the lottery.

• 1:34:55Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:34:56Speaker 01

And now I'm a gambling addict.

• 1:34:58Dax Shepard?

Okay, how did it start and how did we get here?

• 1:35:01Speaker 01

So on Labor Day, we were at, I was at a friend's, the Hanson's, and, you know, everyone was chatting, a bunch of people there, and someone innocently brought up that the...

• 1:35:14Speaker 01

  Jackpot.

• 1:35:15Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:16Speaker 01

Was at one point, maybe just one.

• 1:35:19Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:35:19Speaker 01

  Billion.

• 1:35:20Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my gosh.

• 1:35:22Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:35:23Dax Shepard?

  That's crazy.

• 1:35:24Speaker 01

  Crazy.

• 1:35:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:25Speaker 01

Right? And I was like, oh, that's silly. But then we all started talking about it and, and people were like, oh, yeah, I'll buy tickets and.

• 1:35:34Dax Shepard?

These conversations all go the exact same, right? Does that thing, someone goes, it's 1.1 billion. Someone's like, so 550 million after day. Someone, right?

• 1:35:41Speaker 01

Exactly. So that means lump sum 500 and something million and then taxes. So really, it's this.

• 1:35:49Dax Shepard?

Oh, right, right, right. So we're down to 265.

• 1:35:51Speaker 01

Which is great. This is, I mean.

• 1:35:54Dax Shepard?

It's a lot of money, but whoa, what a hit.

• 1:35:56Speaker 01

  Okay, but.

• 1:35:57Dax Shepard?

  Giving up 750K.

• 1:35:59Speaker 01

I'm ver- I'm, I'm, or you don't have to, you could take the billion over the 30 years.

• 1:36:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:05Speaker 01

  You could.

• 1:36:06Dax Shepard?

You could. Should you? I don't think so.

• 1:36:08Speaker 01

Well, I can't because now I'm in a pact. So.

• 1:36:10Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:36:11Speaker 01

So we're all discussing this, you know, and then the next day is the last day you can buy tickets. The, it, the drawing was that night. So it was Monday. Monday night was the drawing. Sorry. Sunday was Labor Day hang.

• 1:36:25Dax Shepard?

  Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

• 1:36:26Speaker 01

Monday night was the big drawing.

• 1:36:28Dax Shepard?

You were preparing to win a bill.

• 1:36:30Speaker 01

Yeah, getting excited, you know, the whole like, what are you gonna buy? What would you do? Who's gonna change?

• 1:36:35Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:35Speaker 01

Which one of us is gonna change?

• 1:36:37Dax Shepard?

  The most. Everyone's gonna change.

• 1:36:39Speaker 01

Who's gonna change the most and in what way? And what are you gonna do with the money? What are you gonna buy?

• 1:36:45Dax Shepard?

It's so fun. That's the fun of a lottery ticket.

• 1:36:47Speaker 01

  What would you buy?

• 1:36:48Dax Shepard?

  It's a, um, it's a, it's like a justified dream, dream session.

• 1:36:53Speaker 01

It's free money. What would you buy if you won?

• 1:36:57Dax Shepard?

I might, you know, I grabbed a Southwest flight out to Nashville the other day.

• 1:37:02Speaker 01

Yeah. Great. Flies into Burbank. Love that.

• 1:37:05Dax Shepard?

D money. I appreciate the direct flight. I'm in the middle seat. It's tight.

• 1:37:09Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:37:09Dax Shepard?

If I had a billion dollars in that, when I flew to Nashville, I could charter a jet. I think that sounds really, really nice.

• 1:37:16Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:37:17Dax Shepard?

Uh, I mean, I would mostly before any of that, let me be clear. I would give a bunch more money away to a bunch of people that I know and love.

• 1:37:25Speaker 01

Nice. Um, yeah. So we all have different opinions on that, too. Like.

• 1:37:29Dax Shepard?

  What are you gonna do?

• 1:37:30Speaker 01

  Um, I'm just gonna like.

• 1:37:33Speaker 01

Get my pool. I'm gonna throw money at a situation that's currently happening at the house. It's stressing me out.

• 1:37:39Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:37:40Speaker 01

Just gonna throw money at that.

• 1:37:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:42Speaker 01

And not try to figure it out. We'll just like, take care of that.

• 1:37:44Dax Shepard?

  That's right.

• 1:37:45Speaker 01

Um, and then I'm, I'm like, good, I'm gonna save it. I'm fine.

• 1:37:52Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:53Speaker 01

But, no, I do, I really wanna go to a hotel in Los Olivos, which is a couple hours away. It's an Auberges Hotel. I've been really wanting to go there all summer.

• 1:38:05Dax Shepard?

Is that in Mexico, what you just said?

• 1:38:06Speaker 01

  No, here, in California.

• 1:38:07Dax Shepard?

  Los, what is it?

• 1:38:08Speaker 01

  Los Olivos, or Los Olivos.

• 1:38:10Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:38:11Speaker 01

Um, it's like a little wine town.

• 1:38:13Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:38:14Speaker 01

Uh, Callie's been, she says it's great. And it's just been on my list to go for a while.

• 1:38:18Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:38:18Speaker 01

Auberges Hotel. Um, and so for me.

• 1:38:21Dax Shepard?

  Auberges Hotel.

• 1:38:23Speaker 01

For me, uh, that's first thing first, I'm going there.

• 1:38:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, okay, great.

• 1:38:27Speaker 01

And I've convinced everyone, like, if they win, can we please just go there? They, everyone said yes to that.

• 1:38:33Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:38:34Speaker 01

So then it's Monday, okay? And we are at.

• 1:38:38Dax Shepard?

How many tickets did y'all buy?

• 1:38:40Speaker 01

I'm not there yet. So, there's me, Charlie, Erica, Anna, Jess, and Jess's friend, who I don't know well enough to know if I can out him. So we're all hanging out, it's Jess's birthday.

• 1:38:49Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:38:50Speaker 01

And, talking about the lottery. This is when we decide on our pact. Okay, here's what we're gonna do. We're all, Jess was turning forty-nine.

• 1:38:58Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:38:58Speaker 01

We're all gonna buy forty-nine tickets.

• 1:39:02Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:39:03Speaker 01

Okay? And that's great, right? Then, we've got, we're looking at three hundred-ish tickets.

• 1:39:09Dax Shepard?

  Yes, uh huh.

• 1:39:10Speaker 01

And we're gonna go to different places, we're all doing this. If you win, you have to give everyone in the pot three million dollars.

• 1:39:21Dax Shepard?

  Okay. That's nice.

• 1:39:23Speaker 01

  Right?

• 1:39:24Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:39:24Speaker 01

Um, we pinky swore on this. It was basically a blood pact.

• 1:39:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah. That's legally binding, I think?

• 1:39:31Speaker 01

Yeah, big time. Charlie and Erica leave and

• 1:39:36Dax Shepard?

You decided to kick them out?

• 1:39:38Speaker 01

They had to go. They had to go. And we had a couple hours until like it was closing at seven.

• 1:39:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:39:44Speaker 01

And it was like 5:30. And um, and we're like, okay, well, we gotta go walk to go get our tickets. And Jess was like, okay, yeah, here's my $20. And we were like, no, it's 49 tickets each.

• 1:40:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, exactly.

• 1:40:01Speaker 01

And he was like, I didn't hear that.

• 1:40:03Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:40:04Speaker 01

And then his friend also hadn't heard that. So already there's a fight brewing.

• 1:40:09Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:40:09Speaker 01

Okay. Because no, you can't give 20.

• 1:40:14Dax Shepard?

  No, no.

• 1:40:15Speaker 01

You have to give the equal amount.

• 1:40:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, if you give 20, you're not getting $3 million, you're getting like 1.3.

• 1:40:22Speaker 01

No, you just can't be in it.

• 1:40:24Dax Shepard?

I agree. But even, best case.

• 1:40:27Speaker 01

Best case. But that's what they would probably say, like, well, we'll just get less. No, that's not how it works.

• 1:40:32Dax Shepard?

In for a penny, in for a pound.

• 1:40:34Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:40:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:35Speaker 01

The whole point is to increase our odds.

• 1:40:37Dax Shepard?

  That's right. Yeah.

• 1:40:38Speaker 01

So fights were starting and it was his birthday, so it was like, can't be in a big fight. But Anna and I were getting mad. And also Anna was like, we've been saying 49 for so long. Like, why? What's happening here?

• 1:40:51Dax Shepard?

  What happened?

• 1:40:52Speaker 01

So a rift happened in the group. We kicked them out.

• 1:40:56Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:40:57Speaker 01

We called Charlie and Erica. We said, this is what's going on.

• 1:41:00Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Are you under the understanding?

• 1:41:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:03Dax Shepard?

  That it's 49?

• 1:41:04Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:41:04Dax Shepard?

  And our way to go?

• 1:41:05Speaker 01

  Yes, yes.

• 1:41:06Dax Shepard?

  Obviously, it's 49.

• 1:41:08Speaker 01

So we left Jess and his friend in the lurch.

• 1:41:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:12Speaker 01

Anna and I walked down the street. We got our tickets.

• 1:41:15Dax Shepard?

Oh, God. So how many tickets?

• 1:41:17Speaker 01

  So we got

• 1:41:20Dax Shepard?

  296?

• 1:41:22Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:41:22Dax Shepard?

  Oh, because

• 1:41:23Speaker 01

  $100 each. So

• 1:41:26Speaker 01

No, no, sorry. It was a hundred dollars.

• 1:41:28Dax Shepard?

  Tickets are two dollars?

• 1:41:29Speaker 01

  Yeah, exactly.

• 1:41:30Dax Shepard?

I thought they were a buck.

• 1:41:31Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:31Dax Shepard?

  I'm back in the eighties.

• 1:41:33Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:41:33Dax Shepard?

  Sorry.

• 1:41:34Speaker 01

So, anywho, um, we didn't win.

• 1:41:37Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:41:38Speaker 01

  Okay?

• 1:41:38Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:41:39Speaker 01

  But guess what?

• 1:41:39Dax Shepard?

  Tell me.

• 1:41:40Speaker 01

  Nobody won.

• 1:41:43Dax Shepard?

  So what is it now?

• 1:41:44Speaker 01

So then, yesterday was another draw.

• 1:41:47Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my goodness.

• 1:41:48Speaker 01

And so, okay, no one won on Monday. On Tuesday, we have to have another discussion. The pact has to come back together. Are we doing this again?

• 1:41:56Dax Shepard?

  Reconvene.

• 1:41:57Speaker 01

Charlie's like, I think, you know, the rule is if it's over a billion, like, we gotta do it. But for how long?

• 1:42:04Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:42:05Speaker 01

It's like, yeah, this is the dilemma.

• 1:42:07Dax Shepard?

  Conundrum.

• 1:42:08Speaker 01

And I said, look, we'll match whatever you decide you wanna put in.

• 1:42:14Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:42:15Speaker 01

So he decided they're gonna, they wanted to do half.

• 1:42:17Dax Shepard?

Okay, so now in the second round, you can augment the pact.

• 1:42:21Speaker 01

Well, as long as we're all doing the same.

• 1:42:23Dax Shepard?

That's right. So now we're down to twenty-five, or what are we down to now? Fifty?

• 1:42:28Speaker 01

  Fifty. Fifty tickets total.

• 1:42:31Dax Shepard?

  For, okay.

• 1:42:32Speaker 01

  For all of us.

• 1:42:32Dax Shepard?

Okay, so a hundred dollars worth.

• 1:42:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:42:35Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:42:35Speaker 01

Um, and same thing. We were at, in Pasadena, we walked down the street to our chef's.

• 1:42:40Dax Shepard?

  You didn't side by?

• 1:42:41Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:42:42Dax Shepard?

Cause you thought it would give you a bad look?

• 1:42:43Speaker 01

  That's unethical.

• 1:42:45Dax Shepard?

I thought you may feel that way.

• 1:42:47Speaker 01

Okay, and also, on the phone, we were talking to Charlie and Erica, we were discussing the situation with Jess. I heard Erica say, okay, and then we'll just buy. And I was like, no, no, no, no.

• 1:42:59Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:43:02Speaker 01

And they're already changing by the second.

• 1:43:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:43:04Speaker 01

You know, before they've even won.

• 1:43:06Dax Shepard?

This, you're running one of these game theory.

• 1:43:08Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:43:08Dax Shepard?

  Experiments.

• 1:43:09Speaker 01

I know. And I'm proud of myself, it's like a beast game, you know?

• 1:43:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:12Speaker 01

I'm proud of myself, the way I've handled things.

• 1:43:15Dax Shepard?

  The way you've carried yourself?

• 1:43:16Speaker 01

Yeah. So he said, well, we'll do what you do. We went to Pasadena this time.

• 1:43:21Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:43:22Speaker 01

  It's also so funny.

• 1:43:23Dax Shepard?

What's the total, though? You're holding out the total.

• 1:43:25Speaker 01

  Of how many we bought?

• 1:43:26Dax Shepard?

If it was, well, if it was over a billion on the first time, what's it at now?

• 1:43:30Speaker 01

Okay, so it was at 1.3 yesterday.

• 1:43:32Dax Shepard?

  Oh, boy.

• 1:43:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:43:34Dax Shepard?

I'm surprised it didn't shoot up way more.

• 1:43:35Speaker 01

  Or I think it was.

• 1:43:36Dax Shepard?

So I think a lot of people do what you do. It's like they just spent a lot. Now they actually feel like they need to protect their initial investment.

• 1:43:41Speaker 01

  Exactly, exactly.

• 1:43:43Dax Shepard?

  For the lottery.

• 1:43:44Speaker 01

So then we didn't win again. Oh, I should say, I should say, the first time, one of my Power Balls was right, so I think we won $4.

• 1:43:54Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:43:55Speaker 01

  Pretty good.

• 1:43:56Dax Shepard?

  Put that on the leisure.

• 1:43:57Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:43:57Dax Shepard?

  All right.

• 1:43:58Speaker 01

Okay, then yesterday, we didn't win again, although.

• 1:44:02Dax Shepard?

  Did anyone win?

• 1:44:03Speaker 01

No. It's still in play, and guess what it is now? 1.7 billion. Then I was texting with Eric about something else, and I was like, oh, well, you know, I'm about to be a billionaire tonight, so like, none of this is relevant. And then he was like, oh, yeah, oh, no, I, my, he said, my rule is to play if it's over a billion. So I was like, yes, this is a good rule.

• 1:44:27Dax Shepard?

  A lot of people's rule, I think.

• 1:44:29Speaker 01

So I asked Charlie and Eric and Anna if we could include Eric in the pact.

• 1:44:33Dax Shepard?

Okay, but you know he's gonna do a side.

• 1:44:35Speaker 01

So, yeah, because Eric said he wants to put $500 in.

• 1:44:40Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:44:40Speaker 01

So I said, that's fine, but if you, if you join the pact, put in what we're putting in, and have that separate, like, those tickets have to be separate.

• 1:44:50Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, and you're only getting 3 million off of that.

• 1:44:53Speaker 01

Exactly. He's just happy with that, and then he's gonna have some.

• 1:44:57Dax Shepard?

Well, your thing doesn't make a ton of sense.

• 1:44:59Speaker 01

  Why?

• 1:45:00Dax Shepard?

Well, in your pact, doesn't everyone pool all the tickets that were purchased?

• 1:45:05Speaker 01

No, like, we still have ours.

• 1:45:06Dax Shepard?

  You hold on to your.

• 1:45:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:45:08Dax Shepard?

  Interesting.

• 1:45:09Speaker 01

  Why?

• 1:45:09Dax Shepard?

Well, because I think generally a pool would be, everyone put in the equal amounts, these are all of our tickets, and we split it evenly.

• 1:45:16Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:45:17Dax Shepard?

Yours is like, I'm gonna buy 25 tickets, you buy 25 tickets.

• 1:45:21Speaker 01

It's increasing our odds, but it's still like, this is my money.

• 1:45:25Dax Shepard?

It's more of an insurance bet on a 21.

• 1:45:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:45:29Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:45:29Speaker 01

  I think that's good.

• 1:45:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, it's fine, it's fine.

• 1:45:32Speaker 01

I personally would be fine us doing it your way, where we put it all in and split it.

• 1:45:37Dax Shepard?

I want to be clear, I don't know that it's my way, I just think that's the conventional way of pooling, yeah.

• 1:45:41Speaker 01

It is, but I think some people are like, no, if I. It's my money. I'm not gonna feel comfortable splitting it evenly.

• 1:45:49Dax Shepard?

What if someone just disappeared? Like whoever had the winning ticket, they got so greedy, they didn't want to kick out the nine million bucks.

• 1:45:58Speaker 01

  It could happen.

• 1:45:59Dax Shepard?

It could happen. You've watched Mr. Beast.

• 1:46:01Speaker 01

  I have.

• 1:46:02Dax Shepard?

But I know that was displayed on there, wasn't it?

• 1:46:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:46:05Dax Shepard?

Can we address the fact, like, what if you read that Robert Downey Jr. won the Powerball?

• 1:46:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:46:15Dax Shepard?

You'd be like, you fucking, people would be like, you fucking asshole.

• 1:46:19Speaker 01

  I wouldn't be mad.

• 1:46:20Dax Shepard?

So like, here's what I'm thinking right now. Like, I obviously want to go by a thousand.

• 1:46:26Speaker 01

Do you want to join the pack?

• 1:46:27Dax Shepard?

Hold on a second, hold on a second. But I'm thinking through how angry I would be.

• 1:46:33Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 1:46:33Dax Shepard?

I was broke and I saw that an Affleck just won a billion dollars.

• 1:46:38Speaker 01

  Listen.

• 1:46:38Dax Shepard?

So it might be, it might be a big law, you know, it might not be ethical for me to

• 1:46:47Speaker 01

  I don't.

• 1:46:47Dax Shepard?

  participate.

• 1:46:48Speaker 01

I, so I, I have mixed feelings on this.

• 1:46:51Dax Shepard?

  Give it.

• 1:46:52Speaker 01

  All away, but you won't.

• 1:46:54Dax Shepard?

  Most of it away.

• 1:46:55Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:46:56Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:46:57Speaker 01

  Now, listen.

• 1:46:57Dax Shepard?

I want a little something too. We all want a little something.

• 1:47:00Speaker 01

I know. And this is, this is a dilemma because I feel mixed on this. I feel like,

• 1:47:09Speaker 01

I feel like, yeah, you're already rich.

• 1:47:12Dax Shepard?

Like Letterman won the Lotto. Come on.

• 1:47:15Speaker 01

I know. But also I feel like, so what's he supposed to do? Not participate in fun games?

• 1:47:21Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 1:47:22Speaker 01

This goes back to White Elephant.

• 1:47:24Dax Shepard?

That's right. I knew it was all the original wound.

• 1:47:30Speaker 01

It all circles back to White Elephant. Why am I even going?

• 1:47:34Dax Shepard?

Why would I play? Yeah, yeah. If everyone's gonna be so mad, I got the good gift.

• 1:47:37Speaker 01

Exactly. Then why even go? And then people are like, oh, she's too good to come to my party. Like, this is bad.

• 1:47:45Dax Shepard?

Hold on, hold on. I'm gonna, I'm gonna say for myself.

• 1:47:48Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:47:48Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Like, you know, yeah. You got, you got a ton of good luck. The one thing that you're not gonna be able to do is like play the Lotto. This is like, you know, part of me is like, it feels unjust, but then also like, yeah, it feels, that's okay.

• 1:48:02Speaker 01

Well, somebody has to win. And if you win and you give most of it away.

• 1:48:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:06Speaker 01

That's better, actually, in theory for the world than somebody is gonna keep it all.

• 1:48:15Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 1:48:22Dax Shepard?

We get support from Instagram teen accounts. So we talk a lot on this show about how the world is different now than when we were growing up. And one of the biggest differences is obviously social media. And I think a lot of people wonder, okay, what's actually being done to make it safer for teenagers?

• 1:48:38Speaker 01

  Which is a fair question.

• 1:48:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so Instagram has got something called teen accounts and they come with automatic protections built in by default. So anyone between 13 and 17 is automatically placed into this experience. They get age appropriate content settings, contact limits, so that by default, only people they're already connected to can message them. And time management tools, daily time limit reminders, and also sleep mode that mutes notifications from 10:00 PM to 7:00 AM.

• 1:49:05Speaker 01

  Sleep mode is genius.

• 1:49:07Dax Shepard?

Right? And here's the thing, for anyone under 16, a parent has to give permission to change any of those settings to be less strict. The guardrails are on and Instagram keeps building new safety features to create age appropriate experiences for teens.

• 1:49:22Speaker 01

I am really glad Instagram is helping to give parents peace of mind with teen accounts.

• 1:49:26Dax Shepard?

• 1:49:40Speaker 01

Okay, so what, what is the amount?

• 1:49:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:49:44Speaker 01

How much money does someone have to have before they cannot play the lottery?

• 1:49:49Dax Shepard?

And what percentage do you have to give away to not be a piece of shit?

• 1:49:54Speaker 01

And you have to give away to strangers or friends or what?

• 1:49:57Dax Shepard?

I would really want to do something in the foster world.

• 1:50:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's great.

• 1:50:02Dax Shepard?

  Okay, so.

• 1:50:03Speaker 01

Um, but are you gonna join the pact? Because actually I feel like you not joining the pact is bad.

• 1:50:09Dax Shepard?

  Like, oh.

• 1:50:10Speaker 01

  Because.

• 1:50:11Dax Shepard?

  Really?

• 1:50:12Speaker 01

Yeah, because I kind of feel like that is even more selfish. It's like, I'm not joining your pact. I don't want to give you guys 3 million each. I'm just, I'm just in it for myself. You know, see, that's tricky.

• 1:50:25Dax Shepard?

I agree, but but I might also tip your pack into no shot of winning. Cause the sim and universe are gonna be like, you already want, let me, you already won the lottery.

• 1:50:36Speaker 01

  I know, so did I.

• 1:50:38Dax Shepard?

And so there's no way we're letting you win. So do I fuck up your pack?

• 1:50:42Speaker 01

But Eric said that this is a good test of the sim. Because if one of us wins, then like the sim's definitely real. But I said, no, I don't think the sim's that obvious.

• 1:50:54Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:50:56Speaker 01

We are not gonna win because it's a sim. And then he said, it's gonna go to someone who thinks their life is gonna get so much better. Like that they're, all their worries are gonna go away. They're gonna be happy. And then he said, so it might go to Charlie. And then he said, so it was good for you to partner with him.

• 1:51:18Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh, okay, yeah.

• 1:51:21Speaker 01

And he did make, Charlie did make that clear. He does think it's gonna fix all of his problems.

• 1:51:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. It'll solve a lot of them.

• 1:51:29Speaker 01

It will solve a lot, but it won't solve the existential ones and it won't solve loved ones.

• 1:51:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but I've, I've, I'm coming now more full circle.

• 1:51:40Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:51:41Dax Shepard?

  I'm coming more force for.

• 1:51:42Speaker 01

What do you mean? About what?

• 1:51:43Dax Shepard?

Well, it's like, yeah, didn't care my thing. That was my first realization. Didn't care my existential dilemmas.

• 1:51:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:51:50Dax Shepard?

My self-esteem wasn't elevated by it, which is, which I was hoping.

• 1:51:56Speaker 01

  Well, and it shouldn't be.

• 1:51:57Dax Shepard?

It shouldn't be, but I thought it would be. So now I'm in this place of like enormous gratitude and I go, no. Like, in fact, we were just saying this on our trip, like talking with Molly and Erica. And it's like, wherever you go, there you are. That that saying's true.

• 1:52:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:16Dax Shepard?

But. Being in an environment where it's like 136 degrees outside and the wind's blowing sand across your face the whole time versus being somewhere like Hawaii where it's just very calming and lush around you, that app, that has to have an impact on you.

• 1:52:34Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:34Dax Shepard?

  Your environment's definitely-

• 1:52:36Speaker 01

Environment has a huge impact on you.

• 1:52:39Dax Shepard?

So that's part of, money does make you happier and that you can be in an environment that you are much calmer and happier in.

• 1:52:47Speaker 01

Yeah. Money definitely increases happiness. There is no question about that, but it is capped.

• 1:52:55Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:52:56Speaker 01

It is not, it cannot buy, I mean, it can kind of buy you people, but those are not real relationships and those aren't ones that are, actually fill anyone up.

• 1:53:07Dax Shepard?

  Have any value.

• 1:53:08Speaker 01

Yeah. So at the end of the day, I believe that's the only thing you really need is people and love in those relationships and, and money really cannot buy you honest relationships.

• 1:53:22Dax Shepard?

You can be awfully miserable with-

• 1:53:24Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:53:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:53:26Speaker 01

But yes, yes, of course it makes your life so much easier. I mean, and, and yes and no, because even like, yeah, you have more money and you buy more things and you owe more money and you stress out about that and then it's all, it's all relative. Like, because most people aren't smart enough, including me, to have money and then say like, I'm just not gonna spend it. I'm just going to buy exactly what I need.

• 1:53:57Dax Shepard?

And let the money abate my fear.

• 1:54:00Speaker 01

Yes. That's not what we do. We buy more things and have more things that cost more money and require you to have more money.

• 1:54:10Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:10Speaker 01

And it's a really fucking awful treadmill. Anyway, but like when I win the bill, I think I'll finally feel good.

• 1:54:20Dax Shepard?

  Will you fly private ever?

• 1:54:22Speaker 01

No, you know, I don't, I mean, if I have to.

• 1:54:24Dax Shepard?

  Cause you're scared.

• 1:54:25Speaker 01

  I don't like it.

• 1:54:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, it scares you.

• 1:54:27Speaker 01

I mean, if I had to, I would, but that's not how I would spend it. I would definitely spend it on first class travel.

• 1:54:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:54:35Speaker 01

  Um, maybe in Emirates.

• 1:54:37Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:54:38Speaker 01

  That was, that was ideal.

• 1:54:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:41Speaker 01

Safety, I want it for safety.

• 1:54:42Dax Shepard?

  I know, I know.

• 1:54:44Speaker 01

But I, but every, I want everything for safety and it doesn't work. It does not work.

• 1:54:49Dax Shepard?

Right, you just, you have to, that's what's crazy. You have to decide you're safe. Speaking of which, uh, Man's Search for Meaning. Man's Search for Meaning is one of the most.

• 1:55:00Speaker 01

  Popular books.

• 1:55:00Dax Shepard?

Heralded books, always on everyone's top five recommendation. I was positive I read it.

• 1:55:06Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:55:07Dax Shepard?

And I'm like, I've forgotten most of it. I'm gonna reread it. I don't think I've read it.

• 1:55:10Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:55:12Dax Shepard?

But it is, it's, I'm just starting, but it's incredible.

• 1:55:16Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:55:16Dax Shepard?

And yeah, the, here's a man who was a psychologist who was put in Auschwitz.

• 1:55:25Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 1:55:27Dax Shepard?

And his like even sidedness of the experience is so fascinating. And again, how he finds meaning.

• 1:55:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:36Dax Shepard?

And how you identify yourself and, uh, he's talking about how people, since once you got in there, they shaved your head, took all your belongings. And now when you're meeting people, you're kind of free to say you were anybody.

• 1:55:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:49Dax Shepard?

You could say you're a doctor. Well, you can actually inflate your previous status. But I was like, oh, that's a, that's like a detail I wouldn't have thought of like, oh, people are like, oh, I kinda can say I'm anybody I want now.

• 1:56:02Speaker 01

  Mm hmm, mm hmm.

• 1:56:03Dax Shepard?

  It's interesting.

• 1:56:03Speaker 01

  That's interesting.

• 1:56:04Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:05Speaker 01

Yeah. Yeah, I mean, as we're talking about a billion dollars, it does feel crazy. It feels crazy that there are things happening in the world. There are so many starving people.

• 1:56:22Speaker 01

And then there's like a billion dollars someone's gonna get.

• 1:56:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:56:26Speaker 01

Also, where does the California lottery money go?

• 1:56:30Dax Shepard?

To, in theory, education. All of these lottery bills that were passed across the country, really in the eighties, I think.

• 1:56:38Speaker 01

  Go to education.

• 1:56:39Dax Shepard?

That was the premise, but you know, what percentage goes to education?

• 1:56:42Speaker 01

  Well, in Georgia.

• 1:56:44Dax Shepard?

  It funded your college.

• 1:56:45Speaker 01

That's right. So I feel like I owe the Georgia Lottery some money back.

• 1:56:49Dax Shepard?

I think they have varying success rates.

• 1:56:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:56:52Dax Shepard?

  In state to state.

• 1:56:54Speaker 01

I wish they would adopt that here.

• 1:56:56Dax Shepard?

Yeah. The casino proposition hasn't really bore bore the fruit they were hoping. That was also how they sold casinos in states is like, it's gonna go to education.

• 1:57:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:57:08Dax Shepard?

In my experience in some of those casinos is like, I think it's more kind of preying on the people who are most broke already. And I don't know if if that's how we get our education, that can't be right. If that's how we fund it.

• 1:57:24Speaker 01

Okay. Do you think if you win, you should give everyone who contributed to the lottery like at least a dollar?

• 1:57:33Dax Shepard?

I think logistically that would cost probably three dollars for every dollar you distributed.

• 1:57:41Dax Shepard?

Could be costly. I hope I didn't yuck your yum on your pack.

• 1:57:46Speaker 01

No, I would love you to join the pack.

• 1:57:48Dax Shepard?

Okay, what's the buy in tonight?

• 1:57:49Speaker 01

We haven't decided yet. We have till Saturday. Saturday is the next straw.

• 1:57:53Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:57:54Speaker 01

I would like to go back up.

• 1:57:56Dax Shepard?

Well, you know, I'm gonna wanna go up. I mean, we're gonna play.

• 1:57:59Speaker 01

See, this is gonna be tricky because I think now, but it's okay. Well, I'll put in a pile to the pack.

• 1:58:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:58:07Speaker 01

And then I think at this point, people wanna do side money. They can do side money.

• 1:58:11Dax Shepard?

  Okay, everything's on the table.

• 1:58:13Speaker 01

But there is gonna be a certain amount. My guess is gonna be it's fifty, a hundred dollars.

• 1:58:19Dax Shepard?

If we show up on the next fact check, what outfit should be we be where like, are we in superhero outfits? Are we in pilgrim outfits? I think we should just have a visual none that just, we don't want to trigger anyone. But if you're watching, looks like they won a billion dollars because they're both in sailor outfits.

• 1:58:35Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:58:36Dax Shepard?

  So you can pick.

• 1:58:38Speaker 01

  I'd love to go ballerina.

• 1:58:40Dax Shepard?

Great. Yeah, if we're both in full.

• 1:58:42Speaker 01

  Too, too leotard.

• 1:58:44Dax Shepard?

  Onesies, singlets.

• 1:58:46Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:58:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. Okay.

• 1:58:49Dax Shepard?

  Wanna do some fackies?

• 1:58:50Speaker 01

  Yeah. Facts for Alicia.

• 1:58:52Dax Shepard?

  Silverstone.

• 1:58:54Speaker 01

Yes. Now, this is sort of a ding ding ding to earlier. Um, because Alicia, you'd be surprised. She married someone in a punk band.

• 1:59:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:59:07Speaker 01

And you'd probably be surprised, but except not really when you get to know her.

• 1:59:10Dax Shepard?

Once you get to know her, also that her best friend is Woody Harrelson's a surprise. If you're just basing everything on Clueless.

• 1:59:16Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:59:17Dax Shepard?

There's a lot of surprises that come your way.

• 1:59:19Speaker 01

Yeah. Um, I really liked her. I enjoyed her a lot. She was so cool, very self-assured.

• 1:59:25Dax Shepard?

  Yep.

• 1:59:25Speaker 01

Um, she's been around for so long, obviously, and you could like feel it.

• 1:59:29Dax Shepard?

Yes. And again, just the gap between who she is and what she got famous for is one of the more enormous gaps I've ever witnessed.

• 1:59:36Speaker 01

I know. It's kind of fun. It's really fun.

• 1:59:38Dax Shepard?

Yeah. I'm trying to think who else I might put in that category. Oh, I know also.

• 1:59:43Speaker 01

  Who?

• 1:59:44Dax Shepard?

  Is, um, Handmaid's Tale.

• 1:59:46Speaker 01

  Elizabeth Moss. That's so true.

• 1:59:49Dax Shepard?

Elizabeth Moss was so fun and playful.

• 1:59:53Speaker 01

  And light.

• 1:59:54Dax Shepard?

And every role is like, she is going through it and she feels so dark and tortured. Yeah, that's a, that's a good one.

• 2:00:01Speaker 01

  Actor right there.

• 2:00:02Dax Shepard?

Mm-hmm. That's an active motherfucker right there.

• 2:00:04Speaker 01

Yeah. Okay, now, some facts. What show was Rob Lowe on when Alicia was on Mismatch? Cause they had to do press together.

• 2:00:15Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:00:15Speaker 01

I found it. It is The Lion's Den. It was in 2003.

• 2:00:23Dax Shepard?

  Oh, film or show?

• 2:00:25Speaker 01

  Show.

• 2:00:26Dax Shepard?

  Show. Was he a lion?

• 2:00:28Speaker 01

  It's L-Y-O-N-S.

• 2:00:30Dax Shepard?

  Oh, okay.

• 2:00:32Speaker 01

Okay. She mentioned Got Milk commercials and it was a real throwback for me because I used to collect those ads.

• 2:00:38Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 2:00:40Speaker 01

And I had such a good collection.

• 2:00:44Speaker 01

Oh, it's so fun to collect things. Oh, you really got in my head. Ding ding ding. So today, today's episode that's out, sorry, not for the listener, go back a couple. We had Amanda on who wrote the book Destroy This House, a memoir.

• 2:01:03Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:04Speaker 01

  And she talked about hoarding.

• 2:01:06Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 2:01:06Speaker 01

So we get into a lot of hoarding in that.

• 2:01:08Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:01:09Speaker 01

  Which is really wild.

• 2:01:11Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:11Speaker 01

  And interesting.

• 2:01:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:13Speaker 01

  And.

• 2:01:13Dax Shepard?

I feel like I'm suffocating as soon as I think about hoarding.

• 2:01:16Speaker 01

Yeah. And I think on maybe a fact check after that or something, you said that I'm like, um, I could be a hoarder, except that I'm good at giving stuff away.

• 2:01:24Dax Shepard?

That's right. Yeah. At the rate you collect, it, it, it could easily tip, but you're great at expelling.

• 2:01:31Speaker 01

So I've been in my head about hoarding a little bit.

• 2:01:33Dax Shepard?

Okay. Is this why you gave my daughter an outfit yesterday?

• 2:01:36Speaker 01

Yeah. So, well, I let her borrow some shoes.

• 2:01:39Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 2:01:40Speaker 01

  Did you see what?

• 2:01:43Speaker 01

Um, she, she needed to borrow some shoes.

• 2:01:45Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:01:46Speaker 01

  The same size right now.

• 2:01:47Dax Shepard?

Are you guys the same size?

• 2:01:48Speaker 01

Yeah, that's why she had to borrow, she wanted to borrow.

• 2:01:50Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 2:01:50Speaker 01

It's really cute for probably only a very short time. So she should borrow as much as she can now.

• 2:01:54Dax Shepard?

She should. She should go crazy.

• 2:01:56Speaker 01

Um, but yeah, I did a huge closet clean out because of the conversation.

• 2:02:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:01Speaker 01

And the girls came over, all the girls, and they took stuff. And that's always so fun.

• 2:02:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:07Speaker 01

And then I had to clean out all my vases. I, I started to feel like, oh my God, I, I do. I have so much stuff everywhere. Oh my God.

• 2:02:14Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:02:14Speaker 01

And I asked a few people, but most people said they felt like I wasn't a hoarder.

• 2:02:18Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:02:19Speaker 01

  So that was good assurance.

• 2:02:21Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I don't think you are.

• 2:02:23Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:02:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, you're not.

• 2:02:24Speaker 01

You know, I'm just prone to thinking I might have things.

• 2:02:27Dax Shepard?

You're a real dichotomy. It's no peer pressure. Can't be convinced if anything might be fun, but you could be convinced you're a man.

• 2:02:36Speaker 01

  Yes, that's right.

• 2:02:36Dax Shepard?

  And then you're a hoarder.

• 2:02:37Speaker 01

A man, a hoarder, um, real.

• 2:02:41Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:02:41Speaker 01

  Like, I don't really know.

• 2:02:43Dax Shepard?

  It's dichotomy.

• 2:02:46Dax Shepard?

Maybe that's why you're so opposed to purebred sugars. You know, you're a little vulnerable to.

• 2:02:49Speaker 01

Yeah, maybe, maybe. Do you think I could sell my collection of Got Milk ads for like $40,000?

• 2:03:00Dax Shepard?

I don't. I really don't. No. I mean, people collect some bizarre stuff, but I think you might have been one of the few. Yeah. People who had a Got Milk collection. I think I actually.

• 2:03:10Speaker 01

  Very rare.

• 2:03:11Dax Shepard?

  I collected them too.

• 2:03:13Speaker 01

Fuck. Oh, my God. Maybe it's a millennial thing. What was your favorite one?

• 2:03:19Dax Shepard?

I would just take them out of Sports Illustrated.

• 2:03:22Speaker 01

  How many do you have?

• 2:03:23Dax Shepard?

  Not that many.

• 2:03:25Speaker 01

  I had a lot.

• 2:03:26Dax Shepard?

What are the odds I'm sitting with two people who had a Got Milk collection?

• 2:03:29Speaker 01

  Age thing.

• 2:03:31Dax Shepard?

I think it might be whatever the connective tissue is that makes this whole thing work.

• 2:03:36Dax Shepard?

Like, I think if I had to hire anyone new, I would be like, first question, did you collect Got Milk ads? If they said yes, I'd be like, you're hired.

• 2:03:43Speaker 01

Rob, did you like hang them or did you have them in a binder?

• 2:03:45Dax Shepard?

I think I had them ripped out in a binder.

• 2:03:48Speaker 01

Yeah, that's how you did it.

• 2:03:49Dax Shepard?

  That was the move.

• 2:03:50Speaker 01

Yeah. Now, please look on eBay and see what like binders of these are running these days.

• 2:03:55Dax Shepard?

They're just like $15 to buy a print.

• 2:03:59Speaker 01

  One print?

• 2:04:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:04:00Speaker 01

I could really make some money.

• 2:04:02Dax Shepard?

  How many do you have?

• 2:04:03Speaker 01

  A lot. No, a lot.

• 2:04:05Dax Shepard?

  A hundred?

• 2:04:07Speaker 01

  I don't remember.

• 2:04:07Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:04:08Speaker 01

  Next time I'm home.

• 2:04:09Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:04:10Speaker 01

I thought I brought them back, but maybe I didn't. Um, I have like really cool ones, like a Sarah Michelle Geller.

• 2:04:17Dax Shepard?

When you finally move into your house, you're gonna have to get a U-Haul and like unload your parents' house.

• 2:04:21Speaker 01

I know. We've talked about that.

• 2:04:22Dax Shepard?

I bet you have. I bet they're like, when are you gonna unload some of this stuff?

• 2:04:26Speaker 01

  TikToking.

• 2:04:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. Are they gonna downsize?

• 2:04:28Speaker 01

No, they already live in a shack.

• 2:04:31Dax Shepard?

  In a big house.

• 2:04:32Speaker 01

  No, they live in.

• 2:04:34Dax Shepard?

Like a 4,000 square foot house.

• 2:04:35Speaker 01

Oh, my God, you love square foot footage.

• 2:04:38Dax Shepard?

How else are we gonna talk about how big a house is? It's the metric.

• 2:04:42Speaker 01

They already, they could have gotten a bigger house and never did. So they're like happy where they are.

• 2:04:49Dax Shepard?

  Even with.

• 2:04:49Speaker 01

Their room is on the first floor, so they, you know.

• 2:04:52Dax Shepard?

  That's key.

• 2:04:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, they're good.

• 2:04:54Dax Shepard?

That's why I can't die in this house. The stairs.

• 2:04:57Speaker 01

Why? There's a room and there's a guest. There's a million places where you don't have to do that.

• 2:05:02Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'd have to move out of.

• 2:05:03Speaker 01

  The bedroom.

• 2:05:04Dax Shepard?

  Bedroom.

• 2:05:05Speaker 01

You already said you were gonna do that anyway right now.

• 2:05:07Dax Shepard?

Thinking about it, yeah. I haven't yet, though.

• 2:05:10Speaker 01

Okay, that's a good update. Okay, Beverly Hills High Dance Group is called Dance Company.

• 2:05:15Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:05:16Speaker 01

  She was really close.

• 2:05:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:05:17Speaker 01

  Or right.

• 2:05:18Dax Shepard?

  Almost got it.

• 2:05:19Speaker 01

Okay, best music videos of all time. Top one hundred.

• 2:05:26Speaker 01

  It's my birthday.

• 2:05:32Speaker 01

Video Killed the Radio Star, hundred.

• 2:05:34Dax Shepard?

  Video Killed the Radio.

• 2:05:35Speaker 01

Ninety-nine, okay, fine, I'll do top ten.

• 2:05:37Dax Shepard?

Thank you. You can do top twenty, how's that feel? Good birthday compromise?

• 2:05:41Speaker 01

No, it's like, either it's a, it's all or nothing.

• 2:05:43Dax Shepard?

  Top twenty-five, you can do top twenty-five, that's a, that's a good one.

• 2:05:47Speaker 01

  I'm gonna do top ten.

• 2:05:48Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:05:49Speaker 01

Cause it's my birthday, but I like giving gifts to others. Okay, now this is from Rolling Stone, I'm gonna go ten to one.

• 2:05:59Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:06:00Speaker 01

  You're gonna be mad.

• 2:06:01Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:06:02Speaker 01

But I don't want you to argue, this is Rolling Stone.

• 2:06:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:06:06Speaker 01

Okay, number ten, Michael Jackson, Billie Jean.

• 2:06:09Dax Shepard?

  Great video.

• 2:06:11Speaker 01

  Number nine.

• 2:06:11Dax Shepard?

That's dancing on the tiles that light up.

• 2:06:16Speaker 01

Oh yeah, that is a great video.

• 2:06:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, great.

• 2:06:18Speaker 01

Um, number nine, Guns N' Roses, November Rain.

• 2:06:22Dax Shepard?

  Can't remember it.

• 2:06:24Dax Shepard?

ZZ Top better be on here.

• 2:06:25Speaker 01

  Eight, Peter Gabriel, Sledgehammer.

• 2:06:27Dax Shepard?

  Sure, iconic, the dancing models.

• 2:06:30Speaker 01

Seven, D'Angelo, Untitled, How Does It Feel? He's naked.

• 2:06:37Dax Shepard?

Oh, sure, yeah, he's got great obliques.

• 2:06:40Speaker 01

  Six, Beastie Boys, Sabotage.

• 2:06:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, incredible, directed by, uh, her director.

• 2:06:48Speaker 01

  Oh, Spike Jonze?

• 2:06:49Dax Shepard?

  Spike Jonze.

• 2:06:50Speaker 01

  Really?

• 2:06:51Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, great video.

• 2:06:52Speaker 01

Okay, five is New Order, The Perfect Kiss.

• 2:06:56Dax Shepard?

Oh wow, I loved New Order, and I don't know that video.

• 2:06:59Speaker 01

  It's not ringing any bells?

• 2:07:01Dax Shepard?

Oh. I gotta watch it, that's part of my homework now.

• 2:07:04Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 2:07:07Speaker 01

Great. Four, Childish Gambino, This Is America.

• 2:07:11Dax Shepard?

  What a video.

• 2:07:12Speaker 01

  Incredible.

• 2:07:13Dax Shepard?

  What a video.

• 2:07:14Speaker 01

  Oh, look at him.

• 2:07:16Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, so sexy.

• 2:07:17Speaker 01

  Three, Madonna Vogue.

• 2:07:19Dax Shepard?

You gotta, you gotta have that in there.

• 2:07:21Speaker 01

  Two, Johnny Cash Hurt.

• 2:07:23Dax Shepard?

Hmm, I wouldn't put it there, but I do love that song and it's a cool video.

• 2:07:26Speaker 01

Number one, Beyonce Formation. Okay, you're mad, I know. I already know you're mad. I told you'd be mad.

• 2:07:33Dax Shepard?

Just can't believe Thriller is not.

• 2:07:34Speaker 01

I know, you're upset about that.

• 2:07:36Dax Shepard?

I think that thing had a budget bigger than a Hollywood movie.

• 2:07:38Speaker 01

Let me look to see where it is. It's gotta be on here somewhere. Eleven is George Michael Freedom.

• 2:07:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that's.

• 2:07:44Speaker 01

That's big. That has the supermodels in it.

• 2:07:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:07:47Speaker 01

  Beyonce.

• 2:07:48Dax Shepard?

There's a theme here. You put supermodels in your video and that's gonna make the top.

• 2:07:51Speaker 01

Nirvana. Big on me. White Stripes.

• 2:07:56Dax Shepard?

Ooh, that's my current obsession right now. I'm so obsessed with Jack White. I can't stop. I'm reading about him nonstop.

• 2:08:03Speaker 01

I really wanna have him on. Okay, Kiss is on here. Duh. Eighteen, though. Um, you're not gonna, I'm not, I'm at twenty.

• 2:08:14Dax Shepard?

  That's crazy.

• 2:08:15Speaker 01

  Ooh, Ninety-Nine Problems, Twenty-Three. That's a classic. Okay, um, twenty-five.

• 2:08:23Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, something's wrong here. They forgot about it somehow.

• 2:08:26Speaker 01

  California Love. Great one.

• 2:08:28Dax Shepard?

Or maybe they're protesting Michael Jackson.

• 2:08:30Speaker 01

  Maybe.

• 2:08:31Dax Shepard?

Ah, yeah, maybe they felt dicey.

• 2:08:33Speaker 01

  Billie Jean was ten.

• 2:08:34Dax Shepard?

At ten, but maybe they felt dicey about putting him at number one.

• 2:08:38Speaker 01

Well, but they would still include him in.

• 2:08:40Dax Shepard?

Like, no one's gonna put The Cosby Show as the top five comedy of all time, and it is.

• 2:08:46Speaker 01

  It is, yeah.

• 2:08:47Dax Shepard?

Thousand percent, but it would never make a top ten.

• 2:08:50Speaker 01

  No, but.

• 2:08:51Dax Shepard?

  Sitcoms of all time.

• 2:08:52Speaker 01

He made the top ten, so we can't say that. It just didn't, they picked Billie Jean. Oh, Britney Spears, Baby, One More Time. That should be five. Thirty. All right, well, I'm sorry to tell you.

• 2:09:04Dax Shepard?

That's crazy. Yeah, that's really something. Write in the comments if you think, if you're outraged by that.

• 2:09:11Speaker 01

Okay. Um, when did Liv Tyler find out Steven Tyler was her dad?

• 2:09:16Dax Shepard?

  Great question.

• 2:09:17Speaker 01

  Um, she was 11.

• 2:09:19Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:09:20Speaker 01

At an Aerosmith concert in August 1988.

• 2:09:23Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:09:23Speaker 01

Her mother brought her to the show and revealed the truth, which Liv had suspected after noticing her resemblance to Steven.

• 2:09:30Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:09:30Speaker 01

She confirmed the paternity through a test around age 11 or 12 and publicly changed her surname to Tyler when she was 11 or 12 as well.

• 2:09:37Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so I had it pretty right.

• 2:09:39Speaker 01

  Yeah, floppy trunk syndrome.

• 2:09:42Dax Shepard?

  Hmm.

• 2:09:42Speaker 01

  Very bad, very bad.

• 2:09:45Dax Shepard?

It just feels so synonymous with erectile dysfunction.

• 2:09:48Speaker 01

But it's not. It's a condition affecting African elephants where their trunks become paralyzed or severely weakened, hindering their ability to eat, drink, and communicate. That's really sad.

• 2:10:00Dax Shepard?

There's some weird fact about how many muscles they have in their trunk, and it's an insane amount.

• 2:10:04Speaker 01

  Forty thousand.

• 2:10:05Dax Shepard?

Forty thousand muscles in that trunk.

• 2:10:08Speaker 01

It says this makes it one of the most muscular structures in the animal kingdom.

• 2:10:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, great.

• 2:10:13Speaker 01

  I love elephants.

• 2:10:15Dax Shepard?

  I love them the most.

• 2:10:16Speaker 01

No, I love them the most.

• 2:10:17Dax Shepard?

Okay, I love them second most.

• 2:10:19Speaker 01

You can't love them the most because you love primates the most. I'm always teaching you about most.

• 2:10:25Dax Shepard?

  I know.

• 2:10:26Speaker 01

  Man.

• 2:10:27Dax Shepard?

  And best.

• 2:10:27Speaker 01

Yeah. Okay, I do want to say, people are gonna notice this probably, and like, don't comment. She said Mary J. Blige.

• 2:10:38Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.

I kept it because it was, normally that's something I would cut because she didn't mean to say that. She meant to say Mary J. Blige.

• 2:10:45Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:45Speaker 01

• 2:10:55Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:55Speaker 01

And the whole point is that she didn't know Mary J. She was talking about the animals.

• 2:11:00Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

And so it was actually in keeping with her sweetness.

• 2:11:03Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 2:11:04Speaker 01

But it is Mary J. Blige.

• 2:11:06Dax Shepard?

• 2:11:23Speaker 01

  Uh, Batman was, uh, 97.

• 2:11:26Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:11:27Speaker 01

• 2:11:29Dax Shepard?

  All right, love you.
