Eiza Gonzalez

Eiza González (Ash, Baby Driver, 3 Body Problem) is an actor and singer. Eiza joins the Armchair Expert to discuss whether there is human DNA in hotdogs, how she wanted braces because all the cool girls had them, and being a patriotic Mexican. Eiza and Dax talk about her father’s priority always being for her to learn as many languages as possible, why her dad passing away suddenly influenced her to pursue acting full time, and experiencing insecurity when she started working in America. Eiza explains why she rides so hard for those who first gave her a shot, seeing her new “Substance-in-space” horror film Ash in theaters, and how she learned the lesson that really horrific things can give way to the most beautiful, life-changing opportunities. • 0:00Dax Shepard?

Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dan Shepard and I'm joined by Lily Padman.

• 0:04Speaker 01

  Hi there.

• 0:05Dax Shepard?

  Today we have Aza Gonzalez.

• 0:08Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 0:09Dax Shepard?

Aza is an actor. She is a singer. Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, Baby Driver, Three Body Problem, Ambulance, Bloodshot, and a new movie out that I quite enjoyed.

• 0:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 0:23Dax Shepard?

Very moon-like, as I say in the episode, if anyone remembers that great Sam Rockwell movie called Ash.

• 0:30Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 0:31Dax Shepard?

  Yes, Ash.

• 0:32Speaker 01

Yeah, I just saw something about Ash on maybe Instagram. Some friends had seen it and they were raving about it.

• 0:40Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's intense. It's got that, as I think I said in the episode, it's got that kind of substance-y, tenchy.

• 0:47Speaker 01

  Ooh, we love it.

• 0:48Dax Shepard?

Ooh, it was really good, really good. Please enjoy Aza Gonzalez. We get support from Quince.

• 0:56Speaker 01

  Again, that's gusto.com/dax.

• 4:09Speaker 01

  She has bad news.

• 4:10Speaker 02

  I have really-

• 4:10Dax Shepard?

  Great, I love bad news.

• 4:11Speaker 02

I have amazing, life-changing information for you.

• 4:15Speaker 01

  Because of your hot dogs?

• 4:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:17Speaker 01

  This is what started it.

• 4:18Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 4:18Speaker 02

  It might ruin you.

• 4:20Dax Shepard?

Don't tell me anything negative about hot dogs.

• 4:22Speaker 02

I fear it will be happening. Are you traumatized by this? And this was the day that I stopped eating hot dogs.

• 4:28Speaker 01

This is a good example of how, if you care about something, you can twist it. Because, well, tell him the fact and then I'll tell you how I twisted it.

• 4:34Speaker 02

Yeah, because we were talking about your pictures and your paintings.

• 4:37Speaker 01

  Celebs on sandwiches.

• 4:38Speaker 02

I said, wow, who would pick a hot dog as their favorite sandwich? Is that a sandwich?

• 4:43Speaker 01

  That's the big question.

• 4:45Speaker 02

I used to be obsessed with hot dogs.

• 4:47Dax Shepard?

What were your favorites before we ruined it?

• 4:48Speaker 02

Well, I'm not American, so I would just settle for a regular, whatever.

• 4:53Speaker 01

  Oscar Mayer.

• 4:54Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, I wish we even had that.

• 4:55Dax Shepard?

Would you have a street dog? Because I like the street dog.

• 4:57Speaker 02

I'm from Mexico, I'll have anything from the street. Street food is like everything for me. So anyway, I was obsessed with hot dogs and I'd eat them all the time until my brother, I have a brother who's 12 years older than me and likes to ruin my life. He was like, do you know it's proven that every single piece of hot dog has human DNA in it, like, there's human flesh.

• 5:14Speaker 01

And then she just looked it up.

• 5:16Dax Shepard?

  On what website? Willow's.co?

• 5:18Speaker 01

  Isn't it a dot org?

• 5:19Speaker 02

It's called Hey Siri, and Siri is AI. Hey Siri, is there human DNA in hot dogs?

• 5:26Speaker 03

In other words, yes, your hot dogs are going to have a little human DNA on them. This answer is from men'shealth.com.

• 5:33Speaker 02

  Oh, well, I don't know about men's.

• 5:36Speaker 01

Also, she started in the middle, she said, in other words. What's before that?

• 5:40Speaker 02

  Yeah, what is before that?

• 5:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, why did she edit her own?

• 5:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:44Dax Shepard?

Why would AI make a mistake?

• 5:47Speaker 01

Oh my god, she's getting so conscious.

• 5:49Speaker 02

I think I did have a deep dive when I figured this whole thing out, and it's a scary percentage, definitely like a 5% of human flesh, which is pretty high.

• 5:59Dax Shepard?

  Hold on though.

• 5:59Speaker 02

For a hot dog. Pretty high.

• 6:01Dax Shepard?

We are playing it a little fast and loose with DNA and now human flesh.

• 6:04Speaker 02

But I'm saying that it started with flesh and then I kind of unraveled.

• 6:08Dax Shepard?

But if guys operate in the grinding machine? One of their hair strands falls in. That's human DNA. They grind it good. I'm going to claim more of a Jonathan Haidt version, which is like, this is moral dumbfounding. We eat animals. We draw very arbitrary distinctions between which ones we eat and which ones we don't culturally.

• 6:27Speaker 02

  Some more than others.

• 6:28Dax Shepard?

So, I mean, I don't know. Is someone going to get killed so I can eat them? Big ethical issue.

• 6:33Speaker 02

I guess it is all a mental state.

• 6:35Dax Shepard?

For you, though, the notion of having some human.

• 6:38Speaker 02

It was a done deal for me.

• 6:39Dax Shepard?

Look on the surface, though. It's not mine either. Again, I don't desire to eat a human. It's whether or not I can handle it.

• 6:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:46Dax Shepard?

On the surface, look at Rob. Cute wobbly Rob. And then look at a pig sitting in its shit.

• 6:53Speaker 02

No disrespect. I'd be more sad to eat a pig than eat him. I'd be more sad.

• 6:58Dax Shepard?

Sad, because you know, he's not a good boy.

• 7:00Speaker 02

I mean, he looks, I don't know him, but he looks like, if I had to compare it to a little pig who's sitting there just like.

• 7:08Dax Shepard?

I guess I'm just saying hygienically, get Rob out of the shower and then the pig's sitting in its shit and eat shit. And you go like, well, what would be smarter to eat?

• 7:17Speaker 02

  You're not wrong.

• 7:18Dax Shepard?

You're an alien and you're evaluating, what are these animals am I going to eat? One's wallowing in its shit and another guy just hopped out of the shower.

• 7:24Speaker 02

Yeah, but humans are so gross.

• 7:28Dax Shepard?

You think grosser than a pig?

• 7:29Speaker 02

In our hidden environments, we're disgusting. It's true. It's really hard to say. I do think that sometimes animals can be cleaner than humans. They lick their own booty holes.

• 7:39Dax Shepard?

  And you think that's clean?

• 7:42Speaker 02

You ain't cleaning your booty hole as much as.

• 7:44Dax Shepard?

  The hell I'm not.

• 7:45Speaker 02

  A cat.

• 7:45Dax Shepard?

Is that 80% of my shower is focused on my anus. Trust me. And I have a brondle where I spray water after every. And then I left out that I also clean when I do that.

• 7:56Speaker 02

But are you like a full hand cleaner?

• 7:58Dax Shepard?

  I'm neurotic.

• 7:59Speaker 02

  You go like in.

• 8:00Dax Shepard?

Are we talking wiping or cleansing with water?

• 8:02Speaker 02

No, like in shower. Are you like a full hand cleaner? Or you're just like a toss of water into it? No, you gotta get in there.

• 8:09Dax Shepard?

There's multiple steps. So first is I lather a ton of soap and do a full scrub. Then I rinse, because I don't want anything gross touching the soap. And then I go in hard with the bar of soap.

• 8:20Speaker 02

  Wait.

• 8:20Dax Shepard?

And I really rub the bar of soap on my anus. Not in it.

• 8:25Speaker 02

First, you don't want the soap touching it and then you use the soap directly on the.

• 8:29Dax Shepard?

I use soapy hands to get the first round of whatever off. Then I rinse everything. So now it's pretty clean. And now I go on with the direct bar of soap.

• 8:38Speaker 02

  Direct bar of soap?

• 8:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 8:40Speaker 02

  That feels.

• 8:40Dax Shepard?

  It's kind of erotic.

• 8:41Speaker 02

No, I don't know about that.

• 8:42Speaker 01

  Back to humans being disgusted.

• 8:44Speaker 02

  Yeah, that feels.

• 8:45Speaker 01

Is this a morning shower? That feels aggressive in the morning, just a whole bar.

• 8:49Dax Shepard?

You guys are very judgmental of this. I'm wondering, how are you cleaning your butts? I hope not splashing water.

• 8:53Speaker 01

  I'm up in there too.

• 8:55Speaker 02

I'm up in there, but I'm not a bar girl. I'm like a liquid soap. I'm kind of crazy about that.

• 9:00Speaker 01

  I have a bar soap.

• 9:01Dax Shepard?

And are you putting it directly on your?

• 9:02Speaker 01

I normally use hands, also a lather. But I do get in there. I am sure that I am really getting it clean.

• 9:09Speaker 02

For girls, that's more normal. When we were little, my mom with her hands, very Mexican of her, would be like, in my butt like that. With girls, it's a bit more normal. I feel like guys. By the way, I have showered with men at one point in my life.

• 9:21Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 9:21Speaker 02

And I've seen an array of different routines.

• 9:24Dax Shepard?

Do we jump right to Demele? Because you know, I'm friends with Demele.

• 9:27Speaker 02

  Oh, God.

• 9:28Dax Shepard?

Did you date Demele? Did I see this?

• 9:30Speaker 02

  Yes, we dated.

• 9:31Dax Shepard?

Okay, I'm so envious of him. In this way, he seems effortlessly masculine. He can't not be masculine. He's just seems to have these huge haunches. I'm like, how much are you working out? He's like, I don't know, occasionally. I'm like, you have that frame. But I could see him in the shower, just like walking through and being in an honest way.

• 9:51Speaker 01

Hold on, I want to give you, because I was hard on you and I actually want to commend you now. Because I do appreciate that you, as a guy, really care about it being clean. Because I do think a lot of guys don't, and then they just have skid marks and they think, who gives a fuck? But really, you should care.

• 10:09Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, you really should care.

• 10:10Speaker 02

I'm proud of you. Totally care.

• 10:12Dax Shepard?

Yes. And you should do two rounds and you should use the soap.

• 10:15Speaker 02

This is across the board, not women or men. So my mom's an orthodontist.

• 10:19Dax Shepard?

  Former model too, right?

• 10:21Speaker 02

  Former model, yeah.

• 10:22Dax Shepard?

  Did she learn orthodontia later?

• 10:24Speaker 02

So it was the other way around. So my mom, one out of eight brothers and sisters from like a very small town and she was. The only one that got out. She got a full scholarship in Mexico City when she was eighteen. And then crazy lady, she might kill me for saying this, but she got pregnant the first time she ever had sex with my brother. So she was super young. She was studying to be an orthodontist and then she had to work because she had to support my brother.

• 10:48Dax Shepard?

Cause that dad did not stick around.

• 10:50Speaker 02

No, no, he's not around. And so she started modeling simultaneously because a friend of hers was like, I have some extra jobs and then so much more money as a model. She had a master degree and she was an orthodontist for like three months and then she was like, well, the model life is paying me more. So she did it for a very long time.

• 11:07Dax Shepard?

  Did she do your braces?

• 11:08Speaker 02

See, I never had braces. I hate to be that person. Your teeth are literally perfect. They look like veneers. That's very sweet. Thank you.

• 11:15Dax Shepard?

I like really want to get in there now. They're incredible.

• 11:18Speaker 02

And they're so white. So when I was little, all the cool girls had braces in my school. Did that happen here too? Retainers. People would go and get a retainer. All the cool girls had those.

• 11:27Dax Shepard?

  The cool girls?

• 11:28Speaker 02

Yeah. Yes. In middle school, it was a thing. All the cool girls had braces and they would change. I remember the band Halloween they had and I was obsessed with it and I really wanted it. And I would torment my dentist, who was not my mother, but they studied together and he was like, you don't need them. And I begged forever. And now I'm like, wow, I really was clueless about what I was begging for.

• 11:47Dax Shepard?

Did you want to cast too?

• 11:48Speaker 02

I had that from scratch. I've been in the hospital in and out, probably past forty times in my life.

• 11:53Dax Shepard?

  Really?

• 11:54Speaker 02

Yeah, I was a very accident prone kid from age negative zero.

• 11:58Dax Shepard?

Because you are a risk taker or you're clumsy by nature?

• 12:00Speaker 02

  I think it's a combination of both.

• 12:02Dax Shepard?

That's a bad combo if you're a risk taker and you have bad balance.

• 12:05Speaker 02

I mean, it was an ongoing joke constantly that I'd be standing and fall. My mom was like, you're just standing there. Like, how did you fall? It's like you're on roller skates, but you're not. All the time. I've been very lucky because I've had impact to the face. You name it. Broken nose in six pieces. What? And it still looks like that? I fixed it later. It was a mess. Okay, this is unfair. Cause I broke it at eleven. I went straight into a, you remember we had coolers outside instead of ACs and I went straight into a tube at night playing hide and seek. Five pieces concussion, broke it completely. Like I have a Harry Potter scar on my forehead. One year old, this is a table. This is jumping in the shower.

• 12:42Speaker 01

Oh my god, if I was your mom, I would be like, I'm putting you in a bubble.

• 12:45Speaker 02

But to the point of the dentistry of it all.

• 12:47Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 12:48Speaker 02

If you brush your teeth, you need to brush your tongue.

• 12:52Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 12:53Speaker 02

This is the one thing I constantly see that kills me. I'm like, I cannot kiss you now if I've seen that you don't scrape your tongue. You don't get a scraper.

• 13:02Speaker 01

  They have tongue scrapers.

• 13:03Dax Shepard?

You don't have to go to the nuclear option.

• 13:05Speaker 02

And especially if you're shoving that piece of that part of your face.

• 13:08Speaker 01

  Into somebody else's mouth, yeah.

• 13:11Speaker 02

That's the least as a respect to you.

• 13:13Speaker 01

  I agree.

• 13:13Dax Shepard?

I'm gonna promote one of my own products right now to you. A movie called Hit and Run. Because I directed it, I got to do the thing I always want to do, which is in movies, no one ever brushes their tongue. And I brushed my tongue specifically to like gag. That's when I know I've gotten it.

• 13:26Speaker 02

Yes, because you're also taking care of your health.

• 13:28Dax Shepard?

  Brain health.

• 13:28Speaker 02

  Yeah, everything.

• 13:29Dax Shepard?

So in the movie, I'm brushing my tongue and I gag and almost throw up. And there's toothpaste everywhere and that's in the film. And I felt like I had the first really authentic teeth brushing.

• 13:42Speaker 02

It's important, you know, the one movie also that I remember very clear in my head when I was young and I was like, oh wow, this is realistic. Bring it on.

• 13:50Speaker 01

  Oh, loved.

• 13:51Speaker 02

The brother and the girl are in the bathroom and they're brushing their teeth and she stays over at.

• 13:59Speaker 01

  Gabrielle Union's?

• 14:00Speaker 02

No, that's the bad girls, the main girls.

• 14:02Speaker 01

  Kristen Dunn's.

• 14:03Speaker 02

Yeah, it's Kristen Dunn's. And then they're brushing their teeth with Kristen Dunn's brother. And they're going in, it's a whole scene of them sort of flirting, brushing their teeth and she's going into the tongue.

• 14:13Dax Shepard?

And they kept it in. I guess it's not novel.

• 14:15Speaker 01

  You were the second.

• 14:17Dax Shepard?

She didn't gag though, did she?

• 14:18Speaker 02

  I don't think.

• 14:19Dax Shepard?

So she didn't do it all the way.

• 14:21Speaker 01

We'll have to go back and watch for the fact check.

• 14:23Speaker 02

  Important, cleansing your tongue.

• 14:25Dax Shepard?

So your mother has your brother who's 12 years older than you and she's an orthodontist turned model. When does she meet your dad?

• 14:32Speaker 02

I think they meet when my brother's around eight.

• 14:35Dax Shepard?

And what did your dad do?

• 14:36Speaker 02

My dad was a graphic designer.

• 14:38Dax Shepard?

  Was he from Mexico City?

• 14:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:40Dax Shepard?

I got a side note, we went for the first time over Christmas and. I cannot believe how much I loved it.

• 14:44Speaker 02

  It's incredible, right?

• 14:45Dax Shepard?

  Fucking city.

• 14:46Speaker 02

I love to see what's happened with Mexico City because when I moved to the US 10 years ago. We're saying that everything for us is 10 years ago, even though we've been here for like probably six decades. When I moved here, every time I said I was from Mexico, they were like, how's Mexico? Like, I feel like a lot of people were sort of on the fence of going. And in the past seven to eight years, it's changed so drastically. Every time I say I'm from Mexico, someone says, my God, I love Mexico City. Oh, my God, I love San Miguel de Janeiro. Oh, my God, I love Merida. The amount of people that have embraced Mexico, everything progresses. And I think that cities get better. And I definitely feel like Mexico City, especially after COVID, got much better because so many people traveled to Mexico because it was open.

• 15:29Dax Shepard?

  Right, right.

• 15:30Speaker 02

I'm glad that you had an amazing time. I mean, hey, I'm a patriotic Mexican. Is that a thing? Can you be a patriotic Mexican?

• 15:36Dax Shepard?

From anywhere. Okay, so you seem on the surface, because you went to a couple of private schools. One of them was like an American school. It was pretty privileged?

• 15:42Speaker 02

I did have, in a sense, a privileged education, but with parents that worked really hard. My school was very expensive. It was one of the best when it came to education, but my family wasn't wealthy in comparison to everyone else. You know, Carlos Slim's kids were there. We didn't have that type of money. My mom, you know, was truly the breadwinner of the house. My dad was incredibly talented, but not very successful at businesses. And so he was an incredible father figure to me because he spent a lot of physical time with me. And his priority number one for me was education because he didn't get that. And so he really wanted me to be like a lawyer or a doctor.

• 16:20Dax Shepard?

  I hope you've played a lawyer or a doctor.

• 16:22Speaker 02

I have. I played a scientist and an AMT, so it was helpful. So you did it for him?

• 16:26Dax Shepard?

  What was the American school?

• 16:28Speaker 02

It's interesting. So I went half my life to an American school.

• 16:32Dax Shepard?

Does that just mean English school?

• 16:33Speaker 02

International school? Yes, people that flew from America, all their kids were there. Or people that worked for the embassies and stuff like that. And then my other half of my education, I went to a British school. American meant it was full English all day long, no Spanish. So I had geography, math, chemistry, everything in English. So I was fully fluent in English since I was a baby. I don't even remember learning another language.

• 16:59Dax Shepard?

And your parents put in that effort because they just wanted the whole world to be open to you? Did they specifically see you going to the US?

• 17:06Speaker 02

That was never thought. My dad had a fixation with languages, so he really was hyper focused on me speaking multiple languages. And I do, I was his only daughter and his only kid. My dad really didn't want any artistic sort of influence in my life in the sense of like music. And my mom was the naughty one who would take me to dance or singing. And he was like, stop distracting her from 17 different languages.

• 17:27Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. You went to Italy at 10 for a minute to learn Italian?

• 17:31Speaker 02

Yeah. So my family lives in Italy.

• 17:34Dax Shepard?

  Your extended family?

• 17:35Speaker 02

From my mom's side. I went to Trento to learn Italian when I was little.

• 17:38Dax Shepard?

  Have you done a 23andMe?

• 17:40Speaker 02

I actually haven't because I'm paranoid of human DNA, as you can tell.

• 17:44Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah, yeah. You don't even want to know about your own human DNA.

• 17:46Speaker 02

But I should because I do know that I have a little bit of everything.

• 17:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah. What do you think you have? Because mind you, what I thought I had didn't prove out in the data.

• 17:53Speaker 02

  Have you done it?

• 17:54Speaker 01

Yeah, we had to do it and I'm 100% Indian.

• 17:57Dax Shepard?

  Pure.

• 17:58Speaker 02

  That is incredible.

• 17:59Speaker 01

  I'm so pure.

• 17:59Speaker 02

By the way, that's so funny to me because when I moved to the US, when I would ask people, where are you from? They'd be like, yeah, I'm American, Italian, Spanish, with a quarter, Chirroki. And I was like, that is, with all due respect, such an American thing?

• 18:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah, tell us. You know, guys don't do that in Mexico.

• 18:16Speaker 02

I'd be like, I'm from Deafay. You'd be like, I'm from Roma. Like, I've never in my life thought of this.

• 18:22Dax Shepard?

So I would be so wrong. I would have thought it would have been even perhaps more fetishized there because you have this Mestizo population and then this European influence. And there has been some kind of status hierarchy, a little bit derived from that now?

• 18:38Speaker 02

Yes and no. We're all sort of in agreement that we all know that there were some sort of mix. It's settled. We got conquered. The conquistadors came in, took us. We had some Jewish communities coming in from this side, some German on that side, in the best way possible. It's a new country type of mentality. America is the land of immigrants, right? It's the concept of it. So everyone's identified by where they came. I don't want to talk about other. Countries specifically, but I feel for Mexico, we were just all like, yeah, we're Mexican. We didn't really care if we're like more artistic, more Mayan.

• 19:10Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 19:11Speaker 02

We're just proud to be Mexican.

• 19:12Speaker 01

Yeah, it's the search for identity here that you're right is young country sort of thing. But also it's a college application thing. I think that's when most people start to really do the deep dive. So they're like, I'm 0.2% Native American, so I'm diverse enough to get into this college.

• 19:28Speaker 02

Well, to me started happening when I became an actress in America because they're like, so are we legally able to contractually cast you because you're not Mexican enough? I did definitely have an identity crisis when I moved here. It did throw me off for a second because I had never really asked these questions myself. I was just always glaringly Mexican in my eyes and it was just fine. And so when I came here, people were like, but you're not a Mexican because you don't speak.

• 19:52Dax Shepard?

Right. So if mom had family in Italy, had they moved from Mexico to Italy?

• 19:57Speaker 02

  Married into Italian.

• 19:58Dax Shepard?

  That makes sense.

• 19:59Speaker 02

But also my mom's blonde with blue eyes.

• 20:01Dax Shepard?

So she might not be as attacked.

• 20:03Speaker 02

  But she is.

• 20:04Speaker 01

  Right.

• 20:05Speaker 02

That's really like, to me is so funny when they're like, but your mom's blonde. I'm like, guys.

• 20:09Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's fine.

• 20:10Speaker 02

What are you talking about? What are you talking about? There's colors in the world in different countries. Like, it's okay. I have an array of friends who are blonde and fully Mexican. Outside of the fun part of it, it definitely made me really anxious when I moved here because my value was really tied to that. And I understand now why I think it is a cultural thing. I don't know the chicken or the egg of where it started in this place, but people feel a responsibility to justify or explain there's dissent. And I find that quite interesting psychologically.

• 20:43Dax Shepard?

  Annoying?

• 20:43Speaker 02

No, because I don't judge the effect of circumstances, but it made me insecure.

• 20:49Dax Shepard?

You know, it's interesting. This is a bizarre thing to say, but I kind of think it's good, but it does tread on this notion of people pretending they're colorblind, which is also bullshit. But I was watching Ash last night.

• 21:00Speaker 02

  You watched Ash?

• 21:01Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 21:01Speaker 02

  Oh, my goodness.

• 21:02Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I loved it. We'll get to it.

• 21:03Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, exciting.

• 21:04Speaker 01

I haven't talked to anyone that has watched it.

• 21:06Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah. This happens to me more and more frequently now when I'm watching movies. If I hadn't done research on you, I just wouldn't. Have considered your ethnicity in any capacity whatsoever. And I wouldn't even guess. I wouldn't know. It was quite irrelevant. Also, people are much more now mixed, just as our population is much more mixed. There's tons of people now that I see on camera, and I think this is a good thing. Or it's like, if you asked me later what they were, I'd be like, oh, I don't know. I have no clue. I wasn't even thinking of it.

• 21:36Speaker 01

  That's what it should be.

• 21:37Speaker 02

But that's exactly how I feel with artistry. When I was in Mexico, I started in soap operas. We were all Mexican. When we were playing roles, they weren't like, oh, this person needs to be from Germany. They need a German person. They would hire someone slightly Mexican, slightly white. So this sort of thought of where you're from and what you can play never existed in my head. And I worked since I was really young. I started when I was 13, 14. When I moved here, I was 24. So when I got here, I'd be on the first few phone calls with my agents or the first few things that I read, especially when I came here, because it's a night and day since I've moved here. The industry's flipped completely. I'd be like, oh, this takes on. They're like, yeah, they're looking for more of a Caucasian. By the way, I didn't even know the word Caucasian. I didn't even understand what that meant.

• 22:21Speaker 02

That's when I come to being super self-conscious.

• 22:24Dax Shepard?

  Or maybe limited.

• 22:24Speaker 02

Yes. My artistry now is limited based on the piece of land that I was born. And my first play was Grease. I played Rizzo. And like, the thought in my mind never passed through that I have to be American. So when I started transitioning to the US market, it was really challenging. And it made me feel really insecure because I felt like my artistry was limited to playing Latin forever. At the time when I was playing Latin, it was really stereotypical. It really deflated my spirit because I went into it wanting to play an astronaut or a scientist. And the first few years of my career was really impossible. Even with the blessing that I had, thanks to my parents, which was having very fluent English.

• 23:07Speaker 02

And speaking other languages. And I don't say it in, oh, poor me. To me, it was life-changing the moment that Guy Ritchie let me play English. We could argue that there's a million people that could have played it better than me that were English.

• 23:19Dax Shepard?

  Maybe a hundred thousand. I don't think I'm nearly.

• 23:24Speaker 02

I grew up watching actors and I guess in hindsight, white actors, actresses that could play everything. I mean, I remember my mom were watching all the Godfathers and then it sort of sent us to Scarface and we were watching it. I was like, the world that Al Pacino was playing like Italian, but then Cuban. And I never thought of it in any

• 23:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he's played Jewish, Italian, Cuban.

• 23:45Speaker 02

And no one said anything. And then somehow I've been in places and roles that if I'm not specific type of Latina, then I'm not even being considered. It's a very complex, nuanced conversation, right? Because you do want to create opportunity. The Native Americans, they don't get enough representation. And so I'm always sort of torn because I do want people to get opportunities and get more chances, but I don't want Native Americans just playing Native Americans. I want them to play anyone.

• 24:11Speaker 01

It's just taking away the description in the role that this should be a 24 year old white woman. Maybe it could be anyone. It has gotten a ton better.

• 24:21Speaker 02

  It has definitely gotten better.

• 24:22Speaker 01

Once that's gone, then I think there'll be less of, well, this person's Asian and they should be Native. Like that will go away if the opportunity is there for everybody.

• 24:32Dax Shepard?

You got into acting, dancing, painting, all at 12, 13 because your dad died in a motorcycle accident. I hate that for many, many reasons.

• 24:42Speaker 02

  I'm sorry. No, it's okay.

• 24:44Dax Shepard?

And obviously you guys were very, very close, as you already said.

• 24:47Speaker 02

  Super close.

• 24:48Dax Shepard?

And mom wanted to just keep you busy and distracted.

• 24:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:52Dax Shepard?

Was there space for what you were going through?

• 24:55Speaker 02

I don't think there was. I just looked up to him with so much admiration. I was daddy's little girl.

• 25:00Dax Shepard?

  Good luck, future suitors.

• 25:02Speaker 02

Yes, tell them about it. Here we are. But when you have such an amazing father, truly, I don't say that lightly. It was really, really the toughest moment in my life. I just went into complete shock and my mother was really, really suffering. I look back at it and it just feels like a not even real time in my life because it all happened so fast. My mom took me to extracurricular classes to distract me and I went into musical theater. And that's where it just clicked. I think about it all. All the time, being a young child and I sat my mother down and I said, I need to have a very serious conversation. I was 12. Yeah, I was like, we're done. I don't have to continue studying. I'm an actress. She's like, what are you talking about? I'm like, I'm dropping out of

• 25:44Speaker 01

  I'm retiring?

• 25:45Speaker 02

I'm retiring from school. I'm dropping out and we're full on going into this. And I don't know what type of crack cocaine was she on that she allowed me to do it because she saw me so happy.

• 25:56Speaker 01

Well, maybe she also was like, life is short. What's the point of all this?

• 26:00Dax Shepard?

How did she take it? My guess is at 12, you would be dealing with your own loss, but then also trying to cheer mom up or regulate mom a bit?

• 26:09Speaker 02

Yeah, I feel so much empathy for my younger self. Not only that, my career was so jarring because I got thrown into it overnight. And I was so young and I was so not mentally, physically prepared. I was a grieving, depressed, sobbing, eating compulsively child with raging anxiety. And that was really challenging because you sort of get thrown into this child star perfection.

• 26:40Dax Shepard?

What age did you get the first telenovela?

• 26:42Speaker 02

14 and it was really overnight.

• 26:45Dax Shepard?

  Floriscienta?

• 26:46Speaker 02

Yeah, it was called, original was Floriscienta and my remake was called Lola Once Upon A Time. Lola Era Cuna Vez.

• 26:51Dax Shepard?

And it was a show from Argentina?

• 26:53Speaker 02

Originally, we shot in Mexico, but it was the biggest show in literally history of children out there. And so I got the remake and it was a pretty big deal. It was like a national wide search and they saw thousands of, and I got it and I was just so naive. My mom wasn't like a stage mom where she wanted me to be famous and people think that because she was a model. But my mother never wanted me to be in the business. She just was letting me be, but she never made me self-conscious about my looks, never made me feel pressured. So I was like a very normal 14 year old. I was like a chubby, not polished girl. I was not doing my makeup. I was quite ratty and I was quite of a tomboy because I grew up with boys because my brother's

• 27:34Speaker 02

13 years older than me. The shock was really aggressive because overnight they were like, wow, she's so ugly. She's fat. She's not

• 27:43Speaker 02

Talented. My dad had been passed for like less than a year, a year and a half. I was so excited because I loved what I did. It was so earnest. I loved singing. It was the only moment that I felt happy.

• 27:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Can I ask really quick, what was the work schedule of that?

• 27:58Speaker 02

Brutal. So studying and set schooled, working seventeen hours a day.

• 28:03Dax Shepard?

So they don't have the same laws.

• 28:04Speaker 02

No, yeah, no, no. And you're shooting like fifteen, twenty scenes a day.

• 28:08Dax Shepard?

  Cause it's soap style, right?

• 28:09Speaker 02

Yeah. It's a machine. And then I would get on the plane right after I would finish on Friday, straight to tour. So I tour Friday, Saturday, Sunday, get back Monday. It goes for years.

• 28:20Dax Shepard?

So you started reading about yourself on the internet?

• 28:22Speaker 02

Yeah, it was brutal. I went into a heavy depression.

• 28:25Dax Shepard?

Cause this would have been two thousand four or five. And so you could go online and what was?

• 28:29Speaker 02

  MySpace.

• 28:30Dax Shepard?

  Oh, MySpace. There we go.

• 28:31Speaker 02

I remember it like it was yesterday. So they did this presentation. They'd been waiting to see who the girl was because it was like a really big show.

• 28:38Dax Shepard?

It was like the American office. It was like, who's gonna be in the American office?

• 28:42Speaker 02

Exactly. It was the equivalent, I would say, like Hannah Montana.

• 28:44Dax Shepard?

  Right, right.

• 28:44Speaker 02

This major presentation where I came out on a stage and they put me in these crazy dress. I looked insane. And I came out, I didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I was just happy to be there. And the next day, my mom was watching the morning news and these forty year olds were sitting there ripping into me.

• 29:01Speaker 01

God, it's so embarrassing for them.

• 29:03Speaker 02

Forty year old men and women being like, wow, she's so ugly. She's fat. Wow. She's not even talented. It was ruthless. Looking back at it, because now we've become so aware of like, you can't talk like this. Not in Mexico. You're talking about like real third world country type of shit. And it was never ending.

• 29:24Dax Shepard?

You never got the looks or the body they were hoping you to get.

• 29:27Speaker 02

Or talent or smart. And if I'd said something, I was the worst. If I didn't respond, I was conceited.

• 29:34Dax Shepard?

  You're already so self-conscious as a teenager?

• 29:36Speaker 02

I'm fourteen. I went crazy. I remember when I was twenty three and I got a nose job. And then they were like, look at her. Now I was insecure.

• 29:47Speaker 02

And then I was uglier. And then now I had all this done to myself. And then they would doctor photos. And sell them to sell papers and we didn't have law of defamation of character in Mexico. A president removed it. You couldn't sue, so you had to like let it go. You couldn't fight the magazines. So it haunted me for, so my life was always sort of terrifying. I moved here escaping that. I didn't even want to cross over to America.

• 30:11Dax Shepard?

There was an event too. It's a juicy event.

• 30:14Speaker 02

  It is really funny.

• 30:15Dax Shepard?

You were on Lola too. You see another show.

• 30:17Speaker 02

I'm in Amores Verdaderos, which is another soap opera. It's like the bodyguard. I fall in love with the bodyguard. My mom falls in love simultaneously with the bodyguard.

• 30:24Speaker 01

  Oh my god.

• 30:25Dax Shepard?

Triangle between mother, daughter and a bodyguard.

• 30:27Speaker 02

  Two different bodyguards.

• 30:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh, thank god.

• 30:29Speaker 01

Oh, it's like a Freaky Friday.

• 30:32Dax Shepard?

  But everyone gets a bodyguard.

• 30:34Speaker 02

And they're all hot. All very attractive bodyguards.

• 30:38Dax Shepard?

But you had a boyfriend. How long were you guys together at that point?

• 30:40Speaker 02

  I try to forget.

• 30:41Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 30:42Speaker 02

But I think it'd been like two years.

• 30:44Dax Shepard?

At 20 years old, so that's 10% of your life. That's a huge chunk of your life when you think about it that way. And she sees a headline one morning.

• 30:53Speaker 01

  Oh no.

• 30:54Dax Shepard?

Her boyfriend has a sex tape.

• 30:56Speaker 02

  Oh my.

• 30:57Dax Shepard?

But Monica, she's not in it.

• 30:59Speaker 02

  I'm not in it.

• 31:00Dax Shepard?

Was he famous too? Was he an actor?

• 31:02Speaker 02

No. Oh my god, this time of my life.

• 31:04Speaker 01

  This is awful.

• 31:05Speaker 02

My life is really like a soap opera.

• 31:08Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's like life art.

• 31:10Speaker 02

Yeah, like maybe I should make a movie like The Disaster Artist.

• 31:13Dax Shepard?

Oh, it would be great if your boyfriend was your bodyguard at that time.

• 31:16Speaker 02

Oh my god, I should have just cheated with my bodyguard. So he was a owner of restaurants and the nightlife kind of guy. It was really funny because it's not funny for him. He's gonna hate me for this. I'm so sorry.

• 31:27Speaker 01

Doesn't seem like you need to apologize.

• 31:29Dax Shepard?

  No, I don't, yeah.

• 31:30Speaker 02

It was the cover of this magazine and they had like little stars covering his private parts. And it's like he has a sex tape, but it's not me.

• 31:37Dax Shepard?

  Oh boy.

• 31:38Speaker 02

And so I remember he emailed.

• 31:40Dax Shepard?

He didn't email you preemptively going, this is coming out. He waited till you found out from the press?

• 31:46Speaker 02

In Mexico, you don't know. Again, no defamation. That's wild, wild west. When people complain about the UK press, I'm like, live in Mexico's press for three months. If you survive, I will applaud you. That then makes you like a different type of person. And so he emailed, this was a really funny story. A lot happens, chaos, drama. I don't pick up the phone. I'm screaming. And so he thinks that the best idea is to send this email where he sees my brother, my mother.

• 32:13Dax Shepard?

  Oh boy.

• 32:13Speaker 02

  His whole family.

• 32:14Dax Shepard?

  Ay yi yi.

• 32:15Speaker 02

  Or me.

• 32:17Dax Shepard?

You're just in there. You're like one of like

• 32:21Speaker 02

And I just, you know, when you open C C and you're just like, oh no. And the title was like, let me explain or something. Did not get into detail. He's like going back and forth about how this sex tape wasn't while being with me. The comparison was him in his underwear and sending screenshots of the sex tape to my mom.

• 32:44Speaker 02

I don't even have this underwear anymore. No, I don't have that tattoo. He's pointing out tattoos. And I am just like, what are you?

• 32:53Dax Shepard?

So he mounted a defense to your whole family.

• 32:55Speaker 02

So a whole defense, which maybe if I was in that situation, I would have done the same thing. I don't know if I would CC someone's brother with my body naked and photos of before and after, like a selfie of him with his underwear. And my brother just sent me a message. He said, what's going on? Why do I have photos of this guy naked on my email? And so anyway, I left Mexico. It was so jarring.

• 33:15Speaker 01

  That's a lot.

• 33:18Speaker 04

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 33:24Dax Shepard?

This episode is brought to you by McDonald's. The Quarter Pounder with Cheese with Medium Fries and a Drink is now $8. Okay. I need to talk about something that doesn't get enough respect. The Quarter Pounder with Cheese. This is not a casual burger. This is a crafted burger. We're talking a hundred percent fresh beef cooked right when you order it. No artificial flavors, no fillers, no preservatives, just beef doing what beef is supposed to do. And here's a detail I love. There's a cowbell sound in the kitchen. When somebody orders a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, a cowbell goes off and the grill master throws a fresh patty down. That's like having your own entrance music at McDonald's. I want a cowbell for everything in life. The onions are hand topped by someone who just knows the right amount.

• 34:09Dax Shepard?

Two slices of cheese laid out in a star pattern, so every single bite gets cheese. And two pickles side by side, so you're never in a pickle desert. Every bite is accounted for. Someone engineered this thing with love. I love a Quarter Pounder.

• 34:25Speaker 02

Me too. That's my order is a Quarter Pounder.

• 34:26Speaker 01

Quarter Pounder with cheese. I love it. I didn't know they put so much effort that they did a star formation. I should have known because you can taste it.

• 34:36Dax Shepard?

You can taste it. Yeah. The love. Don't tell anyone this, but I'll put two of them back.

• 34:40Speaker 01

  Yeah, I'm not surprised.

• 34:42Dax Shepard?

The Quarter Pounder with cheese with fries and a drink. Now $8 for a limited time only. Only at McDonald's. For a limited time only. Prices and participation may vary. Prices may be higher in Hawaii, Alaska, and California, and for delivery. Fresh beef not available in Alaska and Hawaii. Offer not valid for delivery. We get support from No Bull. The holidays can get hectic. You finally hit a post summer routine and suddenly you're on hosting duty every week.

• 35:09Speaker 01

That's when you really need to ground yourself.

• 35:11Dax Shepard?

Exactly. And that's why I keep my training routine through the holidays. It's the whole No Bull idea. There's a no bullshit training brand built around consistency, honesty, and just putting in the work. It's not about adding more pressure to an already packed schedule. It's about having the gear and the habits to move through the season your way. My personal favorite, all three of the shoes are fantastic. The Outwork, the Outwork Flex, and the Drive 2. I like the Drive 2 because it's a hybrid. And I lift, of course, but I also like to do what's called box jumps.

• 35:42Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 35:42Dax Shepard?

Right? I do a lot of jumping onto a little platform and I want a little more flexibility. And boy, do they deliver.

• 35:48Speaker 01

And if you're a cardio person and you're running and you also need to be lifting.

• 35:52Dax Shepard?

And the style is banging. I don't know what to say. Beautiful style, very breathable, very, very comfortable, lots of support. They were built for lifting.

• 36:00Speaker 01

They also make a great holiday gift. You know, I love gifting. A purposeful one that actually supports someone's goals and routines. And it's not a gift that just ends up in the back of the closet.

• 36:10Dax Shepard?

Stay stronger than the season. Head to nobullproject.com all holiday season to shop new deals every week. We get support from Quince. Okay, so I have a confession. I'm the worst holiday shopper on the planet. I wait until the last possible second, I panic, and then I end up buying something nobody wants. But this year, I've cracked the code and the code is cozy. And Quince's bedding makes it so easy because the quality is exceptional. It's the Kind of gift people actually use in love long after the holidays.

• 36:40Speaker 01

Yes. Okay. Can we talk about their European linens? Because Quince's 100% European linen gets softer with every wash. Most bedding peaks the day you buy it and then it's all downhill. This is the opposite and their organic cotton bedding is breathable and incredibly soft. It's hotel quality comfort for your own bed.

• 36:58Dax Shepard?

You crawl into bed and you're like, wait, did I accidentally check into a Four Seasons? Quince just makes it easy to create a bed you'll actually look forward to getting into. And their quilts, coverlets and duvet inserts make any bed and any gift feel complete.

• 37:12Speaker 01

Everything at Quince is priced 50 to 80% less than similar brands. They work directly with ethical factories and cut out the middlemen. So you can get and give luxury quality pieces without the luxury price tag.

• 37:23Dax Shepard?

I mean, guys, I put these on the bed of my children. They are wrapping my little babies and I feel great about it.

We are supported by Squarespace. So here's something I think about a lot. Most people I talk to on this show, the ones doing really interesting things, they all had a version of their work that existed before anyone else saw it. It was just theirs, notes, ideas, projects they were tinkering with. And then at some point they made the decision to share it. That's the part that's scary, right? Going from I'm working on something to here's what I made. Rob went through the exact same thing, building our site on Squarespace.

And what made it doable was that he didn't have to become a web developer overnight. He just had to show up with the idea. Squarespace handles the rest. Beautiful templates that actually look like you hired someone, built in SEO. So people can find you, email campaigns, scheduling, analytics, all under one roof. No code, no patchwork of random tools. And honestly, the thing I keep coming back to is how low the barrier is. If you've got something you've been building quietly and you're ready for people to see it, Squarespace makes that leap feel a lot less traumatic. Head to Squarespace.com slash DAX for a free trial. And when you're ready to launch, use offer code DAX to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain.

• 39:15Dax Shepard?

Do we believe that it was from an era that you weren't together? Did the tattoos prove his?

• 39:21Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 39:22Dax Shepard?

Cause this actually happened to me. One of these trashy magazines ran this article about me saying I had hooked up with this girl while I was dating Kristen. I did hook up with that girl, but it was way before I met Kristen. And luckily I have a tattoo in it that I had covered right before I met.

• 39:38Speaker 02

So this is like a sensitive subject to you.

• 39:40Dax Shepard?

For me, it really was that. It was a lie and thank God the tattoo absolved me of that. Cause Kristen met me and I'd already had that one covered. It wasn't a sex tape. It was just a picture of her and I together at an event.

• 39:52Speaker 02

  You were kissing.

• 39:53Dax Shepard?

We weren't even kissing and I was just had my arm around her.

• 39:55Speaker 02

Yeah, cause these magazines, they do make up so much.

• 39:58Dax Shepard?

And she lied to them for sure. This woman had sold stories about three other people. She also banged an AA. I met her in AA and she was out of money and then she's getting high. And this was a four story.

• 40:11Speaker 02

  That's horrible.

• 40:12Dax Shepard?

She just lied to them. I guess they believed her.

• 40:14Speaker 02

Did you send nude photos of you to compare to your wife?

• 40:16Dax Shepard?

To Kristen's dad immediately. I got hard and I sent Tom a picture.

• 40:21Speaker 02

  God.

• 40:22Dax Shepard?

Well, I didn't want him to think I was a loser.

• 40:23Speaker 02

Sure, of course. And I've said this story before because it's a phoenix story. And I always bring this to my dad's death. You couldn't think of something more tragic than losing a parent. And my father would have never let me be an actress.

• 40:35Dax Shepard?

You would have had to fight him and have a big separation for him.

• 40:39Speaker 02

It never happened. I was convinced that his narrative was my narrative. And I say with all the love because he didn't mean it in a mean way, but he wanted the best for his daughter and he thought economy, making money, artistry, modeling, acting, it didn't sound like.

• 40:54Dax Shepard?

You had Salma Hayek, that was it.

• 40:56Speaker 02

And still. By the way, we're not a lot that are from Mexico that crossed over.

• 41:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 41:00Speaker 02

And so when I did that, I thought amazing, positive things can happen from horrific situations. And that's kind of been my life. Thanks to that, I moved here. I rented a little bedroom. And my mom had the brilliant idea. I'd always wanted to act here, but I never thought it was like a reality. I studied in Lee Strasberg and they educated us that you need an agent, you need a manager, you need a lawyer. And then I was like, I have no into any of this. And she said to me, I've heard about this thing. It's called IMDb Pro. Have you heard of it? I was like, Mom, you need a manager and agent. She's like, no, no, I heard I can put my email under your profile and then we can get auditions. I was hiding. I was in depression here after that. I was distraught. My boyfriend, it was a public, real,

• 41:43Speaker 02

big, brutal thing. I was already the black sheep in the business. People loved to like really hate me, which was always interesting because I never understood why.

• 41:52Speaker 01

Well, I think still this happens here. People pick a villain or a scapegoat.

• 41:56Dax Shepard?

  We like our good types.

• 41:57Speaker 02

And if you're a woman, I think at the time, the way you see me, I come in strong and confident. And I think that the confidence was off putting. They liked a woman that they would kind of bully.

• 42:07Dax Shepard?

Well, they also want to see young actors just exude gratitude.

• 42:11Speaker 02

Which I did, but I think I didn't do it in the way because I always felt like I had to defend myself constantly about something that I hadn't done. And that's how I felt here too, for many years. There was this underlying, I always needed, wanted to be here through man or because I was dating someone, disregarding my 10 year career in Mexico, because for people that was irrelevant. When I started dating Josh, they would write, I was using him. And I've always wanted to talk about this publicly, but I've never found where to do it in a safe space. They sort of tied this desperation to me as a Latin woman, like I was coming and wanting to cross over when I had already had a career. And funny enough, they would say that I would call or tip off paparazzis

• 42:52Speaker 02

when they forget that 99% of the paparazzis and the kitchens and the ballets, who works the kitchens? Who works the valets?

• 42:59Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, Mexicans.

• 43:00Speaker 02

Yeah. And I had 10 years of a career in Mexico. I was huge in Mexico. So every time I'd walk into a restaurant. Or go somewhere, they would call.

• 43:08Speaker 01

  They knew, yeah.

• 43:09Speaker 02

They knew, but because people here didn't know who I was, they were like, who is this weird bitch who came out of nowhere?

• 43:15Speaker 01

She's calling the paparazzi for attention.

• 43:17Speaker 02

And it was so crazy because it was a combination of, I had no value, but at the same time, it was also sort of set in a way that was incriminating of something that I wasn't doing. And it stayed for long and it was this sort of sense of the experience of being an immigrant. I wasn't worthy of being here.

• 43:33Dax Shepard?

Is it possible you were also inflating how big this narrative was?

• 43:37Speaker 02

I think that when you're incriminated of something that you're not doing, it always feels that way.

• 43:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 43:42Speaker 02

Because I felt really frustrated how to navigate it because I'm a person that I'd be like, that's completely fucking untrue, so I don't even care. But at the same time, I was being guided to like not engage into it because you feeding it. Maybe it wasn't as big, but I felt injustice, complete character assassination of who I am. You're selling someone that I'm not. I hate people that get incriminated for things that they didn't do. In criminal justice, when people get wrongly convicted, it boils my blood.

• 44:11Speaker 01

I had the same thing. It really gets under my skin when someone's miscalculated or misjudged.

• 44:16Speaker 02

When they talk about people publicly, it's so triggering for me. It drives me nuts because I've been that person. To add to your point, I worked really hard. I didn't let that define me.

• 44:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 44:27Speaker 02

And I cried in silence many days to just not let it become who I was. Because it was really prevalent at the beginning of my career. I also was dating and I didn't want to stop my dating life because I was looking for love.

• 44:40Dax Shepard?

I would have fallen for him in one second. I think I did as a guy, yeah.

• 44:43Speaker 02

He was my crush when I was little.

• 44:45Speaker 01

You dated your celebrity crush too?

• 44:46Dax Shepard?

  I did.

• 44:47Speaker 01

  And it's exciting.

• 44:48Speaker 02

You're like 23. Sorry, I'm not smarter at the time to be like, you know what, I'm above this.

• 44:54Speaker 01

  No.

• 44:55Speaker 02

It's just to say like the interesting of perception versus reality.

• 44:58Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So mom put you on IMDb pro and then impossibly Mary Vernu calls you in to read for Dust Still On reboot. Mary Vernu, by the way, is another person. She's in the same camp.

• 45:11Speaker 01

  As Alison Jones?

• 45:12Dax Shepard?

  As Alison Jones.

• 45:12Speaker 01

  Oh, I don't know her.

• 45:14Dax Shepard?

Oh, Mary Vernu is cast the most incredible.

• 45:16Speaker 01

  Amazing.

• 45:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, she's.

• 45:17Speaker 02

  She was just scrolling through.

• 45:19Dax Shepard?

I mean, talk about someone's doing their work. They're on IMDb to find you without a manager or an agent.

• 45:25Speaker 02

So, random, you know, who found me was Robert Rodriguez. He was watching TV and he saw me in Univision. I was on some awards and he saw me speaking English. And he said, Mary, find her. And so I was in Mexico in the middle of a bridal shoot. I'm wearing a ginormous bride dress. And I had a flip phone that I had bought at the Oxxo, like a 7-Eleven, to have an American number because I was studying astrology. So I had a 917. I opened my flip phone. I have a text from Mary Renew and I'm like, who's this? She's like, I'm a casting director. I'm like, OK. She's like, can you tape yourself? So I taped myself against the wall with a wedding dress on the bottom. Oh, my God. Like a T-shirt on the top. And then I flew in the next day and yeah, he cast me.

• 46:05Dax Shepard?

OK, now you go to Austin for two years.

• 46:07Speaker 02

  Obsessed.

• 46:08Dax Shepard?

Austin's my favorite city in the country.

• 46:09Speaker 02

  I'm going two days.

• 46:10Dax Shepard?

  Salpa?

• 46:11Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 46:11Dax Shepard?

Oh, I'm going in a few weeks. Where did you live? How was it? How many months were you there to shoot that? Did you go to Barton Springs?

• 46:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 46:19Dax Shepard?

OK. Haven't been to Cedar Point.

• 46:21Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 46:22Dax Shepard?

Did you go to Salt Lick and sit outside on the picnic tables?

• 46:25Speaker 02

It's my favorite time of my life. It was such an amazing introduction to realistically living in America. Because I'd been in and out. I'd been in New York for school and lived in Argentina for a few years after that. And then came here.

• 46:37Dax Shepard?

  Buenos Aires?

• 46:38Speaker 02

  Buenos Aires.

• 46:39Dax Shepard?

  Was that a great place?

• 46:40Speaker 02

You have to go. My favorite city in the world and the hottest people I've ever seen in my life.

• 46:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I've heard there's a lot of sexy folks.

• 46:46Speaker 02

  Sexy everything.

• 46:47Dax Shepard?

I also heard you can buy coke there for like 10 dollars. Oh, you can't go.

• 46:50Speaker 02

  You should not go.

• 46:50Dax Shepard?

Well, I would have to go.

• 46:51Speaker 02

You shouldn't go. Not allowed. Yeah, so I moved to Austin and I fell in love with Austin. Keep it weird.

• 46:59Dax Shepard?

Did you like rent an apartment or were you staying at a hotel the entire time you shot?

• 47:02Speaker 02

The whole cast was living in a communal apartment complex. So we all lived together. It was Melrose Place. It was like the ultimate American experience. I'd never done the dorm thing. So it was so exciting to be like.

• 47:13Dax Shepard?

  That's so fun.

• 47:14Speaker 02

Morning. And we'd be like at the pool and we all lived together.

• 47:17Speaker 01

  I'm jealous.

• 47:19Speaker 02

It was the best. And then we would eat food trucks, go to Franklin's, live in Barton Springs, run every day. And I'm obsessed with Robert.

• 47:27Dax Shepard?

  He's incredible, right?

• 47:28Speaker 02

He's like my dad. When I started, he protected me a lot of really horrible me too things. He really was like, no one's gonna get close to her.

• 47:37Dax Shepard?

Also, the parallel, though, between Salma leaving Mexico, having been huge on telenovelas, being terrified she's not gonna make it, and then breaking out in a Rodriguez movie.

• 47:48Speaker 02

  With the same role.

• 47:49Speaker 01

  He just keeps doing it.

• 47:51Dax Shepard?

So you come off of that, and then you go into Baby Driver's really the next big thing in your career.

• 47:57Speaker 02

  Huge.

• 47:58Dax Shepard?

It's a humongous success, makes $220 million. Edgar Wright.

• 48:02Speaker 02

I die for Edgar. I just really ride for the people that supported me at the beginning.

• 48:06Dax Shepard?

Took gambles on you or fought for you.

• 48:08Speaker 02

That's like first English speaking movie ever. I was so scared. I remember walking into that set and it was like Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm and Kevin Spacey and Ansel and John Bernthal. And I was the only woman on my first day. Lily James was in the movie, but we never really worked together. There's no warm up. You're with heavy hitters. And I was really scared. And Edgar was just so kind and let me create and gave me so much openness. And I felt so inspired in that room. But I was fucking shitting myself. I'm not gonna lie. I was so nervous. I'm very shy. It doesn't look like I am, but I am.

• 48:47Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's an intimidating group to step into. Then Hobbs and Shaw, this is a Fast and Furious spinoff. This is another enormous movie. Hobbs and Shaw, we've got The Rock.

• 48:57Speaker 02

  And Jason Statham.

• 48:58Dax Shepard?

How long does that movie take to make?

• 49:00Speaker 02

The movie took a long time to shoot. I was in and out. I shot in a week. David Leach called me. He's like, would you come? I was shooting Godzilla versus Kong in Australia. And I had a week off between location and location. And so they fixed my schedule so I could go and shoot. They wrote that role. And so they popped me in to be part of the franchise. Whatever was gonna happen, nothing happened.

• 49:20Dax Shepard?

David Leach, I did his first 20 minutes short when I was a groundling. Yes. And he was still doubling Brad Pitt or something. Somebody huge as a stunt man.

• 49:29Speaker 02

  The best.

• 49:30Dax Shepard?

And then to see Fall Guy, which I think is the best movie of last year. I just couldn't be happy for that guy.

• 49:34Speaker 02

Kelly, his producing partner and his wife, by the way, talking about stunts need to be honored at the Oscars like yesterday. The amount of work, I've done a fair share of stunt work in my career. I had a horrific accident. I broke my collarbones and my ribs on a set, a stunt that went wrong.

• 49:51Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 49:53Speaker 02

These people are like risking their lives. A lot of stunties die in these movies and we're still not honoring them. It's crazy.

• 49:59Dax Shepard?

Driven over by Tom Sizemore. He was not supposed to drive the car and he drove the fucking car over to Castro and drug his body.

• 50:06Speaker 02

It's gnarly and they don't get enough recognition.

• 50:08Dax Shepard?

Do it over and over again. Like your story about getting hurt, they have like thirty five.

• 50:12Speaker 01

That's what I mean. I was gonna say, that's literally one out of, that's their day to day. And they recover and they go back into it.

• 50:18Speaker 02

  I know.

• 50:19Dax Shepard?

  It's a mindset.

• 50:20Speaker 01

Daniel Radcliffe stunt double was paralyzed during one of the Harry Potters.

• 50:25Dax Shepard?

  There's a doc about it.

• 50:27Speaker 02

He has a memoir or something that's supposed to be amazing.

• 50:29Dax Shepard?

Okay, Godzilla versus Kong, another enormous hit. I was looking at Godzilla versus Kong and I was like, I think that one movie would put your lifetime box office above my like twenty five movies. He's getting one of those fucking movies that makes a half billion dollars.

• 50:46Speaker 02

  People love those movies.

• 50:47Dax Shepard?

It's wild. And then Three Body Problem, you work with David Benioff and Weiss.

• 50:52Speaker 02

Game of Thrones for people who don't know.

• 50:54Dax Shepard?

Yes. Oh, I wanted to mention, I care a lot because that's huge. This is what's weird about movies now. So fifty six million households watched this movie, I Care A Lot on Netflix. And if each household has just bought a ten dollar ticket, it's bigger than Kong. It's like a billion dollar movie if you think about it that way.

• 51:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:13Dax Shepard?

What's better, do you think? I'm now out of it where I would have to worry about whether it's coming out on streaming or in box office. Like there's this pride of having a winning movie. It's so rare and exciting to be a part of. But then, don't you just want the maximum amount of people to see the thing you do?

• 51:28Speaker 02

That's how I feel. I mean, I guess some people get paid for those things. They get back ends. I really haven't had the beauty of that.

• 51:34Dax Shepard?

  First dollar gross deal.

• 51:35Speaker 02

I've never heard of that in my life. I don't know if I will. And so I just care about the work and people watching the work and the work that I feel proud of. And sometimes I'm like hoping that never gets seen too.

• 51:46Dax Shepard?

  Sure, sure.

• 51:47Speaker 02

Oh, God. So I Care A Lot was an amazing experience because it was also in the COVID era. Everyone was in their homes watching TV. So so many people watched it more than probably would have now. And I love that movie.

• 52:01Dax Shepard?

  Where'd you shoot it?

• 52:02Speaker 02

  We shot in Boston.

• 52:03Dax Shepard?

Okay. Your co-star was from New Zealand?

• 52:05Speaker 02

In I Care A Lot, Roseanne Pike. No, she's English.

• 52:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 52:08Speaker 02

  She's an English rose, baby.

• 52:10Dax Shepard?

  I'm so sorry.

• 52:11Speaker 02

  How dare you.

• 52:12Dax Shepard?

  So she's English.

• 52:13Speaker 02

Gone Girl, you're thinking of not the right person.

• 52:16Dax Shepard?

  Another Roseman?

• 52:17Speaker 05

Yeah, he's got a different friend, Rose.

• 52:19Dax Shepard?

  That's Kiwi, right?

• 52:20Speaker 01

  Rose McGyver?

• 52:21Speaker 05

  Yeah.

• 52:21Speaker 01

Oh, that's Rose McGyver. Yeah, Roseanne Pike is Gone Girl.

• 52:25Speaker 02

  Gone Girl, dax.

• 52:26Dax Shepard?

Yes, I love her. My apologies to everybody. I was picturing David's friend. Who's a Kiwi?

• 52:32Speaker 02

  She's great, too.

• 52:32Speaker 01

  She is great, too.

• 52:34Speaker 02

I like her, too. I don't know her, but I like her.

• 52:36Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 52:37Speaker 02

  Roseanne Pike, she's incredible.

• 52:38Dax Shepard?

You guys are bros now, right?

• 52:39Speaker 02

  Bros.

• 52:40Dax Shepard?

She interviewed you for Interview Magazine.

• 52:42Speaker 02

She's my wife. We're wifing up. I spend a lot of time with her. She sends me raunchy photos. I send her raunchy photos.

• 52:50Dax Shepard?

None of yourselves, but of other people?

• 52:52Speaker 02

None of us. We play lovers in the movie. We had a scene originally in that movie where I pegged a man with her.

• 53:00Dax Shepard?

Oh, wow. Okay. And what did you use to peg the young or old man?

• 53:05Speaker 02

  Really big, black dildo.

• 53:07Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 53:08Speaker 01

  Wow, okay.

• 53:09Speaker 02

It was pretty big and I could find it.

• 53:11Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 53:12Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 53:13Dax Shepard?

What have you had in your purse?

• 53:14Speaker 02

No, no. So basically, we have this scene, which was incredible. The movie starts with her sort of going on a date with Scoot McNair. It's totally scrapped out of the movie, which is a bummer because it was so good. Anyway, we would go into the scene where she's sort of saying how much she realized she doesn't like men. And she's really into women. And so she's like, but you should try it. It's fun. I'm like, maybe we should try it together. And there's a scene where we would go on a date, the three of us. We would go back to the house. And you would see from the reflection on a microwave, three bodies having a threesome, but I was pegging a man with a strap on. And then we'd come out and then be like, yeah, it's not really my thing. And then we'd go back to being full-on lesbians. And so that got scrapped out. I don't know if it was too raunchy.

• 53:56Dax Shepard?

Maybe just a little too early in the film.

• 53:57Speaker 02

It would have been a win because it was funny. It was great. But since then, we just have photos of each other. Just with raunchy things. And so she sent me for my rap gift, a ginormous strap on. Wow.

• 54:12Dax Shepard?

Does the intimacy coordinator know about all this?

• 54:15Speaker 02

Yeah, we would get in trouble. No, you both consented. You're both good about. And then this is me sending her my rap gift.

• 54:22Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you're wearing it.

• 54:26Speaker 02

  This is really something.

• 54:27Dax Shepard?

This is too personal, but in that filming of that, were you like, maybe I would want to do this to somebody?

• 54:33Speaker 02

Yeah, did it seem fun? I was kind of fascinated by it. I'm not gonna lie. I don't know if it is my kink. Well, we know cannibalism isn't your thing. No, definitely not mine. This one's more.

• 54:42Dax Shepard?

I just imagine there could be a moment where you're like, that doesn't appeal to me at all. Now I've put this thing on.

• 54:47Speaker 02

I definitely was fascinated by it.

• 54:48Dax Shepard?

There's something about your hips hitting someone else's and you are the business end.

• 54:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 54:53Dax Shepard?

I can imagine a gal doing that and going like, oh, I get it.

• 54:56Speaker 02

I see how that is powerful. I get the psychology behind it and how that could be, yeah, a fetish. I'm never a no to things. I'm always a yes to trying things and discovering. Yeah. Not done yet. Just fictionally. Well, you have the apparatus. Also, it sticks on the walls. I have it like on a window.

• 55:15Dax Shepard?

But what could be really terrifying to a man is if on his third date with you, he was going to the bathroom and he saw this and he's like, oh, fuck.

• 55:23Speaker 02

  I did. It's happened.

• 55:24Dax Shepard?

  She's gonna, oh, it's happened.

• 55:25Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, it's happened. Because I had it in my house. So one time I did this movie, like, it's a lot of explaining.

• 55:32Dax Shepard?

  Six years ago.

• 55:33Speaker 02

If I was a dude, I wouldn't believe it. Yeah. Let me show you why. See?

• 55:38Dax Shepard?

Do you know Rosamund Pike? Not from New Zealand.

• 55:41Speaker 02

Not from New Zealand. Not from New Zealand. Very English. You should have her here. You would laugh a lot, by the way. She seems awesome. Awesome.

• 55:47Dax Shepard?

So you did one movie with Guy Ritchie and now you've done, I imagine you already shot it?

• 55:50Speaker 02

I've done three. So I've done The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Then I did a movie called In the Gray that comes out later this year. Oh.

• 55:58Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 55:59Speaker 02

With Jake Gyllenhaal and Henry Cavill. And then I did the third one, which comes out later-ish this year.

• 56:06Dax Shepard?

How quickly is he shooting movies?

• 56:07Speaker 02

  Back to back.

• 56:08Dax Shepard?

Does he grill on set and you eat the grilled food?

• 56:11Speaker 02

We went carnivore on Fountain of Youth. Krasinski tried. It, he was successful for a minute. I think he did it. And then Natalie is vegetarian, so she did not do that. It has to be the biggest nightmare for a vegetarian to be surrounded by people that are just eating red meat. Cause he was losing weight. I was sort of into the whole biohacking of it all, fascinated by it. And so we would grill just steak and steak and steak and more steak with butter every single day.

• 56:34Speaker 01

  How's your heart?

• 56:35Dax Shepard?

  My cholesterol's good and I.

• 56:37Speaker 02

You have to kind of get tested.

• 56:38Dax Shepard?

  Almost exclusively red meat.

• 56:39Speaker 02

I would have had a heart attack.

• 56:41Speaker 01

  Yeah, but that's genetic.

• 56:42Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's genetic.

• 56:43Speaker 01

  So that's the whole thing.

• 56:44Speaker 02

  That's genetic.

• 56:45Speaker 01

Genetically predispositioned, probably not the diet.

• 56:48Dax Shepard?

  It's not for you, honey.

• 56:49Speaker 02

But I loved it. So we would grill on set every day.

• 56:51Dax Shepard?

Natalie Portman is in the fountain of youth.

• 56:54Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 56:55Dax Shepard?

Forget those dudes on the set of Baby Driver.

• 56:58Speaker 02

  The dream.

• 56:59Dax Shepard?

I'm so intimidated if I'm you. Like if I've got to do the two hander with Bill Murray, who I idolize. For me, Natalie Portman was the only ingenue I bought in a hundred percent.

• 57:09Speaker 02

I became an actress because of Natalie Portman. So it was pretty wild. I was trying really hard to be cool. I was just like, hi, so.

• 57:19Speaker 01

  Like I'm like you.

• 57:20Speaker 02

And I like know everything in a creepy, like probably she could sue me kind of way. I was so uncool.

• 57:25Dax Shepard?

But did you penetrate? Did you eventually?

• 57:27Speaker 02

Yes, it's easy because she's the nicest person ever. I couldn't stop staring at her. It's only happened to me twice with her and Marion Cotillard, when I did a show with her.

• 57:35Speaker 01

You're like, how do you look like this?

• 57:37Dax Shepard?

  Transfixed.

• 57:38Speaker 02

Totally. And she was so fun to work with, really challenging physically, water tanks for hours, freezing cold in the air of the UK. And we were laughing all the time. We would always be like joking about it. She has the best humor. Krasinski obviously has the best humor and it was good vibes all day long. And it was a dream job and I couldn't believe it.

• 58:00Dax Shepard?

  Where did you shoot that?

• 58:01Speaker 02

We shot everywhere. We went to Thailand. Then we went to Vienna. Then we went to Egypt.

• 58:07Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 58:07Dax Shepard?

It was like a dream vacation.

• 58:09Speaker 01

Yeah, but not the water baths. That's.

• 58:11Dax Shepard?

That's how you pay for the trip.

• 58:12Speaker 02

But it's cool though. Like how many times can you say, oh, I was in some weird water tank for hours with Natalie Portman?

• 58:20Speaker 01

  You're right. You're right.

• 58:21Speaker 02

I'll take it. It was an amazing experience. So we have become quite tight with Guy Ritchie.

• 58:26Dax Shepard?

Okay, so Ash, which I watched last night.

• 58:28Speaker 01

What about Mr. And Mrs. Smith? Really quick, you did a little cameo.

• 58:31Speaker 02

  I love that.

• 58:32Speaker 01

  I loved that show.

• 58:34Speaker 02

  How good is that show?

• 58:35Speaker 01

  So.

• 58:36Speaker 02

How good, how good. Hiro, the director, did such an amazing job. And yeah, he called Skarsgård and me. We had already worked together on Godzilla. He was like, would you guys come and play for like a few days? And we want your stereotypical couple of what you would think Mr. And Smith is gonna be.

• 58:51Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 58:52Speaker 02

Turn it on its head. And it was fun. You think we're gonna be in it. It was like, dead.

• 58:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 58:57Speaker 02

Hopefully we'll make it back. Maybe it could be a throwback. You never know.

• 59:00Dax Shepard?

So Ash, I would say it's got two really great parallels. It really reminded me of Moon. Did you ever watch Moon?

• 59:08Speaker 02

  Yes, Moon.

• 59:09Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God. Did you ever see Moon?

• 59:10Speaker 02

I don't know Moon. You should watch it. That's incredible. That's a huge reference.

• 59:14Dax Shepard?

And that's someone's kid directed that? David Bowie's kid or something?

• 59:16Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 59:17Speaker 05

  Duncan Jones.

• 59:18Speaker 01

But is Duncan Jones somebody's kid?

• 59:20Dax Shepard?

  A child of David Bowie?

• 59:22Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 59:22Dax Shepard?

But does not share the Bowie last?

• 59:25Speaker 01

Just wanted to separate. It's kind of like.

• 59:26Dax Shepard?

  Nick Cage.

• 59:27Speaker 01

  Nope, a Anderson Cooper.

• 59:30Dax Shepard?

Right. Do you know Nicholas Cage is really Coppola?

• 59:32Speaker 01

  Oh, really?

• 59:33Speaker 02

  He's in the Coppola family.

• 59:34Dax Shepard?

He wanted to make it on his own, so he gave himself Cage.

• 59:38Speaker 02

  You've blown my mind.

• 59:39Speaker 01

And do you know about Anderson Cooper? He's a Vanderbilt, the journalist.

• 59:42Dax Shepard?

  His mother is Gloria Vanderbilt.

• 59:44Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 59:45Dax Shepard?

And also Emilio Estevez not using Sheen.

• 59:49Speaker 01

You're right. That was a good move.

• 59:51Dax Shepard?

  Sheen, Martin Sheen.

• 59:51Speaker 02

  Oh, Martin Sheen.

• 59:52Dax Shepard?

Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen, Emilio Estevez, they're a family, but look at this.

• 59:56Speaker 01

  People need their own path.

• 59:58Speaker 02

  What?

• 59:58Dax Shepard?

We're really giving you a really quick education.

• 1:00:00Speaker 02

Tell you that I've changed my last name. Can you imagine?

• 1:00:04Dax Shepard?

  From Streisand?

• 1:00:05Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:00:08Speaker 02

Yes, I couldn't be more like her.

• 1:00:10Dax Shepard?

  And then, of course, Alien.

• 1:00:12Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:00:12Dax Shepard?

Is obvious. So who made this?

• 1:00:15Speaker 02

Flying Lotus is an artist, so he's a musical prodigy. He's incredible. He's a producer.

• 1:00:21Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:00:21Speaker 02

And I was a humongous fan of his music. And I had seen this insane, crazy movie called Cuso that he did before this. There's really not a plot. It's just a crazy, brutal, gory, insane movie. It feels like you're watching back in the day, late night MTV, which is weird. And I was obsessed with him and the script came across my table and. I was really yearning for something that was in the horror space bizarre and creepy. And I like a psychological thriller. This felt really in the vein and he showed me his visuals. I mean, we made that movie for no money.

• 1:00:58Dax Shepard?

It's very impressive. Okay, so it's set in the future. You are a group of earthlings that is trying to explore and find another planet that would be habitable. And you touch down on this planet in this pod. And when we meet you, you have amnesia. You don't know what the fuck's gone on. Your head is damaged and everyone on the crew is dead. And we're kind of piecing together Mento's style. What happened?

• 1:01:27Speaker 02

Feels like psychosis. It's a discombobulating movie.

• 1:01:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you're dealing with like amnesia, but also kind of madness.

• 1:01:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:34Dax Shepard?

Like, we're not quite sure. Is this person insane or not? We don't know why everyone's dead.

• 1:01:41Speaker 02

  Creepy and good.

• 1:01:43Dax Shepard?

And then we have Aaron Paul pops in and he ostensibly is trying to figure out what happened as well. But in classic movie like these, we don't know who's friend and who's foe.

• 1:01:53Speaker 02

  Twisties? Yeah.

• 1:01:55Dax Shepard?

Lots of twisties, but visually really, really original. And it had a tension and a chaos that substance.

• 1:02:01Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:02:02Dax Shepard?

  Kind of unsettling.

• 1:02:04Speaker 02

That's how I describe. You're doing a perfect job of describing.

• 1:02:06Dax Shepard?

  Substance in space.

• 1:02:07Speaker 02

Yeah, substance in space. Cause when we got this movie, it was a wild card. Everyone was like, are you sure you want to do this? And I was like, yeah, it's insane. I don't even know what's going to turn out to be, because it's like, when you think you know, you don't know. And it gets crazier and it gets crazier.

• 1:02:22Dax Shepard?

Well, a lot of them, you go like, oh, this is either going to be incredible or it's going to suck. And that's fun.

• 1:02:26Speaker 02

I'm willing to take the risk. This is fun. I can see his vision because he had like a very strong point of view. And I trust people that have strong points of view when it comes to creative. In my experience, Edgar Wright, Guy Ritchie, Bob Zemeckis, like work with people that have points of views. You're in it. And when the substance sort of took a life of its own, I was like, oh, I'm glad people are open to crazy films. And it is slightly camp, but also uncomfortable and weird and dark and. Brutal. It goes from psychological thriller to really gory, really bloody and back and forth. It's dark. It's a crazy movie.

• 1:03:01Dax Shepard?

And it has this element of oxygen, which is always fun. So like you're watching, you're kind of holding your breath a lot of the time. Is she gonna run out of oxygen? I think this is a very like Angelina Jolie role.

• 1:03:13Speaker 02

  Oh, really?

• 1:03:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah. If this movie was made in 97, I think Angelina Jolie would do this.

• 1:03:19Speaker 02

Yeah, she was quite a risk taker, I think, with her choices.

• 1:03:22Dax Shepard?

I think she had similar, the bad word would be hangups. She had a similar fear of only being hot.

• 1:03:29Speaker 02

Yep. Yeah, needing to prove herself.

• 1:03:32Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And I think she did a lot of things that were unflattering intentionally to break out of that. And so this very much mirrored, I think, that experience.

• 1:03:40Speaker 02

Ah, that makes me happy to hear that you felt that way.

• 1:03:43Dax Shepard?

But I'm gonna really applaud you as an actor. You have almost no lines in this movie. Most of the movie is you processing flashbacks. You have to react to all this stuff that you're not seen. You're in a scene by yourself. You sit at a desk and they go, okay, cameras, now you gotta take us through these flashbacks. You have to take us through the anxiety and the tension of trying to figure out how the fuck you are where you are at. Anything we're gonna learn from you, we just have to see. And you did an incredible job. I was quite blown away.

• 1:04:14Speaker 02

Thank you. That means a lot because you just nailed it in the head why I picked this role. I've always craved, I guess coming from soap operas, and I talk a lot too, as you can tell. We love talkers. Yeah, I'm a heavy talker and I fill space, my anxiety with speaking. I've always, I think secretly, wanted to experience what that was like, to be able to feel comfortable in that space. Because I don't think that people see me as that type of actress ever. Because the roles that have flashed into the Psygeist have been quite the dynamic ones. And I personally like these performances way more. And so I really enjoyed it and I was really scared.

• 1:04:55Speaker 02

And I had come off of a run of doing, like Three Body Problem was one of the most challenging jobs I've ever had. Because while everyone was sort of rooted on On factual things, I had to be creating this anxiety building moments with like nothing in the show. I'm watching numbers coming and I'm becoming suicidal and I'm going through a really hard time where I'm seeing this boat gets sliced completely that I never saw. So a lot of my performance came to childlike imagination. That's a scary

• 1:05:22Dax Shepard?

  Oh my god, yeah.

• 1:05:23Speaker 02

place to be as an actor, as you know.

• 1:05:24Dax Shepard?

You came from lunch. You have a real life. You walked over. You can't even connect with another actor in the scene.

• 1:05:30Speaker 02

You're lying only on imagination and then gauging how much is too much, how little is too little. What is over the top? What is not over the top? You're not giving enough. You don't have a real gauge. When you're in a scene, you're bouncing off of each other. Here you're just like free falling. I had done that back to back. I went from that to Three Body Problem and it was scary. Some people can call it a success and people will be like, I don't love it, but at least I felt really proud. Have you seen Three Body Problem?

• 1:05:56Speaker 01

  Uh-uh.

• 1:05:56Speaker 02

So there's an episode in Three Body Problem, something really major happens. It's like the red wedding on Game of Thrones. Like it's like a crazy episode. Thousands of people get killed and we're seeing it sort of unravel in front of our eyes, but we're seeing it on screens, but nothing was happening. So you're just seeing this ginormous sort of tragic moment happening, but we're seeing nothing and we have no idea what the effects is gonna look like. How severe, how not severe. You really rely on your director and if you're lucky, you have an amazing director. If you're unlucky, you don't have an amazing director.

• 1:06:27Dax Shepard?

You're just scared for three months.

• 1:06:29Speaker 02

For Three Body Problem, I was scared for two years. Two years of like bracing because my whole performance on that show, I'm the only one that is relying on nothing because I'm talking to myself. I'm looking at things.

• 1:06:39Dax Shepard?

Ooh, talking yourself so hard on camera. Like a mirror scene where you gotta look in the mirror. You're like, oh my god, guys.

• 1:06:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, be believable.

• 1:06:46Dax Shepard?

I think it, looking at myself, but I've never spoke to myself.

• 1:06:50Speaker 02

  Never, not once.

• 1:06:51Speaker 01

Yeah, but some people do if they're not well.

• 1:06:56Speaker 02

  I've seen.

• 1:06:57Dax Shepard?

They're having like a conversation with a second party that's in the mirror?

• 1:07:00Speaker 02

Hopefully that's not me and hopefully I'm never there.

• 1:07:03Speaker 01

  Yeah, let's hope.

• 1:07:03Speaker 02

I'm gonna knock on wood. Pretending that you can do it is terrifying. But yeah, so anyway, it's challenging and I appreciate you.

• 1:07:09Dax Shepard?

We have many scenes where lights up, she is leaking tears, processing this thing. Yeah, I was like, God bless.

• 1:07:17Speaker 02

To kind of build an arc is where it becomes scary. That's where I find hard in the psychological thriller type of like discombobulating films because same on Three Body Problem, you have to build an arc.

• 1:07:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you have to be your craziest at the end of the second act.

• 1:07:30Speaker 02

But you don't know because especially on Ash, Flying Lotus was sort of like, I can move scenes around. And I was like, wait, wait, what do you mean?

• 1:07:37Dax Shepard?

It's not a super linear story.

• 1:07:38Speaker 02

No, but actually it's the most fun because then I would play every scene differently. And then he had like an array of things to pick from. So that's kind of the dream. I can be quite type A and I used to have gotten better at it. Cause I came from a school of there are certain directors that want a very specific type of performance and I had worked in a row with a lot of those directors. So it was very healing for me to go into plays where like, just go for it. And I was like, what do you mean?

• 1:08:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:08:02Speaker 02

They're like, go for it. And that felt scary for me for a while. And so it was great. And so we played a lot of different things.

• 1:08:11Speaker 04

This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Every family has that one holiday tradition nobody actually enjoys, but everyone keeps doing because stopping it would feel like a federal offense. For me, it was a specific meal situation that I will not name because my family listens. But at some point, you have to ask yourself, am I doing this because I love it? Or because I'm afraid of what happens if I don't?

• 1:11:07Speaker 01

Yes, and that question applies to so much more than the holidays. I think a lot of us carry these invisible rules about how we're supposed to spend the holidays, who we're supposed to see, what it's supposed to look like. And when you start unpacking that with a therapist, you realize half of your stress is coming from rules you didn't even write.

• 1:11:23Dax Shepard?

This is where BetterHelp can be a great resource during the holidays. BetterHelp does the initial matching work for you so you can focus on your therapy goals. I just love therapy. I've been avoiding it recently, or not avoiding it, but I was like, oh, I'm busy, I'm busy, I'm busy. I haven't canceled, canceled, canceled, but then I-

• 1:11:50Dax Shepard?

  You start feeling it.

• 1:11:51Speaker 01

Yeah, because then I had it this past weekend and I was like, oh my God. I'm just, thank God, thank God for her. Yeah.

• 1:13:18Speaker 02

  Fun.

• 1:13:18Dax Shepard?

I'm sure that movie made you better.

• 1:13:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, good challenge.

• 1:13:20Speaker 01

  I hope so.

• 1:13:21Dax Shepard?

That was a big exercise. That was like heavyweight, heavy reps.

• 1:13:25Speaker 02

I'm really scared of this movie.

• 1:13:27Dax Shepard?

You did such a good job.

• 1:13:28Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 1:13:29Dax Shepard?

I hadn't seen many of these movies, so.

• 1:13:31Speaker 02

I know you're gonna be watching I Care A Lot now, for sure.

• 1:13:34Speaker 01

  You really sold it.

• 1:13:36Dax Shepard?

Wait, didn't you cut the pegging scene?

• 1:13:37Speaker 02

  Yeah, boring now.

• 1:13:38Dax Shepard?

Now I don't need to see it.

• 1:13:39Speaker 02

There's little heavy makeouts here and there, but no pegging.

• 1:13:42Dax Shepard?

Where do people see it? It comes out.

• 1:13:45Speaker 02

March 21st in movies. It's wide release. Why, I'm also really scared.

• 1:13:50Speaker 01

  That's awesome, though.

• 1:13:51Speaker 02

We need a lot of love. Please go watch it.

• 1:13:53Speaker 01

Go to the movies. The movies are fun. I miss the movies.

• 1:13:56Speaker 02

And it's a horror movie. I love going to the movie theaters for a horror movie.

• 1:14:00Speaker 01

Exactly. Or like Substance, as you said, was such a good movie to see in the movie theater.

• 1:14:05Speaker 02

  I loved it.

• 1:14:06Speaker 01

Cause everyone's into it and laughing and kinda screaming and it's that communal thing we just don't get anymore.

• 1:14:12Speaker 02

Exactly. Wait, did you work with Josh now that I think of it?

• 1:14:15Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we did a movie called When in Rome. You don't need to see it. Kristen's the lead. Josh is her love interest. I'm one of three suitors trying to get Kristen.

• 1:14:26Speaker 01

  From a long time ago.

• 1:14:27Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah. This was within the first three months of us dating. 18 years ago, we made this movie.

• 1:14:32Speaker 02

Wait, so you were dating before you did the movie?

• 1:14:34Dax Shepard?

Yes, which is a wonderful story because Disney did not want to hire us. We've been dating for three months. We're not hiring a three-month boyfriend, girlfriend, and then they break up in three weeks and then the whole movie's ruined.

• 1:14:44Speaker 02

  That's very smart, right?

• 1:14:45Dax Shepard?

One of my best friends, Andrew Panay, Yorgo, was the producer and I was like, George, I promise you, no matter what, I will not break up with her.

• 1:14:56Speaker 02

At least while I'm filming the movie.

• 1:14:57Dax Shepard?

Yes, we barely made it. We were living together. It was a disaster for us, living together three months in and shooting a movie.

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

  Cause they were in Italy.

• 1:15:05Dax Shepard?

Only for a week. Mostly it was this dark apartment in New York.

• 1:15:08Speaker 02

Oh, you just weren't here. So you had to live together.

• 1:15:11Dax Shepard?

Yes, yes. We were shooting in New York and then in Italy.

• 1:15:13Speaker 02

So you said, let's just jump in and straight up live together while making a movie? That sounds insane.

• 1:15:18Dax Shepard?

I'm like so frugal. Well, let's combine our living thing and then we pocket the thing. We get home and the relationship is in a state of total disrepair. We decided to go to a couples therapist, her therapist.

• 1:15:29Speaker 02

  Like three months?

• 1:15:31Dax Shepard?

Well, now we've shot a movie together. So now we're four or five months. Yeah, I'm out. We took a motorcycle trip home to Michigan. It was a disaster. I left like, I hope I never see this person again as long as I live. She felt the same way. We get home, we go to couples therapy and I say to the therapist, I go, you know, I made this promise to not break up with her during the movie because of my friend, but now we're back in real life and I don't know that we're gonna make it. And he goes, well, it's really interesting. You're saying you're back in real life. Cause actually that was real life. You commit, we're not breaking up. And I was like, oh my God, that's so stupid. But I honestly was like, oh wow, that is it. You go, no, no, under no circumstances. So we must figure

• 1:16:15Dax Shepard?

out how to make this work. Cause we're not breaking up. So weirdly it was a kind of a breakthrough in life.

• 1:16:20Speaker 02

And how many years are we in now?

• 1:16:21Dax Shepard?

  Eighteenth year.

• 1:16:22Speaker 02

Wow. Frozen is my favorite movie of all time.

• 1:16:25Dax Shepard?

Well, good news, you'll have three and four coming your way.

• 1:16:28Speaker 02

I don't think any adult that has no children has watched Frozen as much as I have.

• 1:16:34Speaker 01

That's the first time I've heard that.

• 1:16:36Dax Shepard?

Well, if you like musical theater and singing.

• 1:16:37Speaker 02

I would go on dates with guys and I'd have my Spotify and shuffle.

• 1:16:41Dax Shepard?

And your strap on in the backseat?

• 1:16:43Speaker 02

Yeah, in the backseat. And then all of a sudden it was like, do you wanna build a snowman? And I'm singing, they're like, this is so weird. You can totally tell I had no childhood and I was like a child star who had got completely ripped away from having a childhood. So now I'm living it.

• 1:16:57Dax Shepard?

  Did you love Wicked too?

• 1:16:58Speaker 02

I went to the movie theaters. I watched it 17 times. I cried. I was blown away by it.

• 1:17:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, the one line got me to well up. It's right before, what's the last song they sing as they're on the

• 1:17:10Speaker 02

  Define gravity.

• 1:17:11Dax Shepard?

It's like a stanza before that.

• 1:17:15Speaker 02

Of anywhere, of everywhere. Oh, unlimited.

• 1:17:20Dax Shepard?

  Unlimited, together we're unlimited.

• 1:17:23Speaker 02

  It got you.

• 1:17:23Dax Shepard?

I was like, oh, fuck, yes, you are, girls.

• 1:17:26Speaker 01

Did you watch the Oscars last night?

• 1:17:29Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 1:17:29Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:17:31Dax Shepard?

  Did they rip it up?

• 1:17:32Speaker 01

Ariana came out and sang a song from The Wizard of Oz. She sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

• 1:17:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:38Speaker 01

And then Cynthia came out and sang a song from The Wiz.

• 1:17:41Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my.

• 1:17:42Speaker 02

  And then they sang together.

• 1:17:44Speaker 01

  Together, that.

• 1:17:45Speaker 02

  Define gravity.

• 1:17:46Speaker 01

  Together, unlimited.

• 1:17:47Speaker 02

It gave me chill, just repeating it gave me chills.

• 1:17:50Speaker 01

Also, what it was saying, because The Wiz is an African American Wizard of Oz.

• 1:17:55Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:17:55Speaker 01

  And it's bringing these together.

• 1:17:57Speaker 02

  It was spectacular.

• 1:17:58Speaker 01

  Powerful.

• 1:17:59Speaker 02

And it makes me really happy for John Chu. Random, John Chu was the first person to actually cast me in a movie.

• 1:18:04Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:18:05Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 1:18:05Speaker 02

He did a movie that was not successful at all, and we always laugh about it called Gem and the Holograms.

• 1:18:10Speaker 01

  I remember this.

• 1:18:11Dax Shepard?

  Ryan Hansen was in that.

• 1:18:12Speaker 01

  Yes, our friend Ryan.

• 1:18:14Speaker 02

Are you guys friends with Ryan?

• 1:18:14Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 1:18:15Speaker 02

Ryan, he's the best. He's hilarious.

• 1:18:18Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:18:18Speaker 02

  Yeah, he is.

• 1:18:19Dax Shepard?

He's the most charismatic man in America.

• 1:18:20Speaker 02

  The most charismatic man ever.

• 1:18:21Dax Shepard?

  Can do backflips.

• 1:18:22Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:18:23Speaker 01

  And will, at any chance.

• 1:18:25Dax Shepard?

  With a little provocation.

• 1:18:27Speaker 02

And he cast me as the Misfits, which was the bad girls. And we had a little tiny scene I remember was Kesha me. And we had two lines at the end of the Gem and the Holograms because supposedly we were gonna do another one. It never happened.

• 1:18:39Speaker 01

  Ah.

• 1:18:40Speaker 02

But it was my first role, actually, before Baby Driver, now that I think of it.

• 1:18:43Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:18:44Speaker 02

And we've been friends ever since, John Chu and I.

• 1:18:46Speaker 01

  He is.

• 1:18:47Dax Shepard?

All right, well, Izzy, this was so fun.

• 1:18:48Speaker 02

  Thank you, guys.

• 1:18:50Dax Shepard?

Really great job on Ash. Everyone watch Ash. Go to the movie theater, it's scary. And you'll have that communal experience where you're screaming and maybe throwing up a little bit.

• 1:19:00Speaker 02

You grab your titties out of fear. You know when you grab your titties, you're like, oh.

• 1:19:04Dax Shepard?

  That's a good.

• 1:19:04Speaker 01

  That's a good sign.

• 1:19:05Speaker 02

Thank you so much for having me. I am such a fan of the podcast. I'm really happy to be here.

• 1:19:10Speaker 01

We were so happy to have you.

• 1:19:11Speaker 02

I hope people don't think that I'm insane. I'm not insane.

• 1:19:14Speaker 01

  You're not insane.

• 1:19:15Dax Shepard?

No one thinks that. It's time to let all that go.

• 1:19:18Speaker 02

  Anxiety go.

• 1:19:18Dax Shepard?

It's all behind us. All right, adore you, thank you.

• 1:19:21Speaker 02

  Thank you, guys, bye.

• 1:19:27Dax Shepard?

Thank God Monica's here. She's gonna let him have the facts.

• 1:19:32Speaker 01

Yeah, no, she, her all time, her like my Matt and Ben.

• 1:19:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:37Speaker 01

  Is, um, Mr. Tumnus.

• 1:19:40Dax Shepard?

  Who?

• 1:19:44Speaker 01

  What's his name? James McAvoy.

• 1:19:46Dax Shepard?

  Whoa, oh, great pick.

• 1:19:47Speaker 01

I know, but, but she picked him while he was Mr. Tumnus.

• 1:19:52Dax Shepard?

  Who's Mr. Tumnus?

• 1:19:53Speaker 01

In like Lion Witch in the Wardrobe. So he's like, he's like a centaur or something.

• 1:20:00Speaker 01

And we were seeing in the movie theater and she was like, is he hot? And I was like, no.

• 1:20:06Dax Shepard?

  Wow.

• 1:20:07Speaker 01

And he's turned out to be quite hot.

• 1:20:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's so charismatic.

• 1:20:12Speaker 01

I guess. I've never met him.

• 1:20:14Dax Shepard?

What did that just make me think? Oh, we, I renamed Whiskey and I feel like it's such a good name for him.

• 1:20:21Speaker 01

  What is it?

• 1:20:22Dax Shepard?

First of all, conjure him in your head.

• 1:20:24Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:20:24Dax Shepard?

A little Mogwai rat, right? Three legs. We decided he's Tiny Trump.

• 1:20:31Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:20:32Dax Shepard?

So his new name is Trimp.

• 1:20:35Speaker 01

  I love that.

• 1:20:35Dax Shepard?

Picture his face and picture Trimp.

• 1:20:37Speaker 01

  That's exactly.

• 1:20:37Dax Shepard?

  This is my dog, Trimp.

• 1:20:38Speaker 01

  Ew.

• 1:20:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:20:40Speaker 01

It's really accurate in a gross way.

• 1:20:43Dax Shepard?

  Trimp.

• 1:20:44Speaker 01

Cause it's kind of like shrimp, which he's shrimpy.

• 1:20:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:20:47Speaker 01

  But then.

• 1:20:48Dax Shepard?

And then what's the rat from Charlotte's Web? Templeton.

• 1:20:52Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:20:53Dax Shepard?

So his name is, um, Trimp Templeton something. I've forgotten his last name, but now he's got a whole new three names.

• 1:21:00Speaker 01

I like that. He really looks like a shrimp. Who do you think is the perfect name to face and body? Like named a person match?

• 1:21:11Dax Shepard?

  Brad Pitt.

• 1:21:13Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:21:14Dax Shepard?

I guess that just those words symbolize now hotness and.

• 1:21:19Speaker 01

Yeah, but I don't know. That's like chicken or the egg.

• 1:21:23Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:21:24Speaker 01

  I mean more like.

• 1:21:24Dax Shepard?

Oh, that reminds me. Um, as I alerted you. Uh, on my bus trip home from Nashville, I was watching all kinds of stuff, mostly shit I can just listen to. Great rec if you're just driving and you want to listen. Turning Point, that 10. It's on Netflix. It's 10 episodes, but really the history of the arms, nuclear arms race and all the twists and turns. I wrote down stuff in my notes that I want to bring up.

• 1:21:51Speaker 01

  Thank God.

• 1:21:52Dax Shepard?

You're gonna like it. No, you're gonna like one part.

• 1:21:54Speaker 01

  Okay. Great.

• 1:21:55Dax Shepard?

But anyways, I gave Love Island, Temptation Island a chance.

• 1:22:00Speaker 01

  I've never done that.

• 1:22:02Dax Shepard?

I couldn't do it. I'll blame it on driving and needing to look at probably hot coeds.

• 1:22:06Speaker 01

I assume that's the whole point. It's very visual.

• 1:22:09Dax Shepard?

And the most alarming thing's happening to me, which is like, hot coeds are starting to do less and less for me.

• 1:22:16Speaker 01

  That's great.

• 1:22:17Dax Shepard?

  I mean, is it? I mean, it's like on a self-actualized spectrum, it's good. That's a bummer to miss.

• 1:22:23Speaker 01

  I understand.

• 1:22:24Dax Shepard?

Something that has been a source of like titillation and enjoyment my whole life. It's just one less thing I enjoy.

• 1:22:31Speaker 01

Okay, I have a question. Answer honestly.

• 1:22:33Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:34Speaker 01

Is it that just like overall the titillation in seeing like women on screen or yeah, we'll say on screen.

• 1:22:41Dax Shepard?

Dudes, you know, I like ripped dudes as well.

• 1:22:44Speaker 01

Okay, so it's all going downhill or is it just the age has changed?

• 1:22:49Dax Shepard?

Phew. Yeah, how do I, how do I know? But everyone's pretty young on the show. What I think is happening is there's some sliding ratio in my head that used to be at 13. Looks was a 20. Like my body was just responding to what you see.

• 1:23:07Speaker 01

  Of course.

• 1:23:08Dax Shepard?

And then I just feel like personality always ratcheted up and then looks priority went down. And I think that was at a really nice even keel for a long time, long enough that I could at least look at a hot person with a repugnant personality and think that'd be tolerable for 40 minutes.

• 1:23:25Speaker 01

  Oh, I see. Okay.

• 1:23:27Dax Shepard?

I can't even enjoy now. I'm turning into a woman.

• 1:23:31Speaker 01

That's what I was literally just about to say.

• 1:23:34Dax Shepard?

Finally starting to understand how you guys feel.

• 1:23:37Speaker 01

  Becoming your

• 1:23:38Dax Shepard?

It doesn't matter if someone's hot.

• 1:23:39Speaker 01

Feminine side is coming out. Finally.

• 1:23:42Dax Shepard?

I must be in, um, misog.

• 1:23:44Speaker 01

  Perimenopause.

• 1:23:46Dax Shepard?

  Menopause.

• 1:23:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:23:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, but it's like

• 1:23:49Speaker 01

  That's how it feels.

• 1:23:50Dax Shepard?

They introduce themselves, right? It's like, you know, the premise, there's like 10 couples or eight couples and

• 1:23:56Speaker 01

They come in as a couple?

• 1:23:57Dax Shepard?

It's the weakest premise imaginable, which is like, we want to make sure we can take our relationship to the next level. So we're gonna see, we're gonna really tempt each other. It's like, that's not what people are looking to take their relationship to the next level do conventionally.

• 1:24:11Speaker 01

  Conventionally.

• 1:24:11Dax Shepard?

But anyway, so it's you're sitting down, it's this weird mix of jealousy and then bravado of that they they don't care.

• 1:24:18Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:24:19Dax Shepard?

And then the temptresses and tempters come out, if that's the male of tempt.

• 1:24:23Speaker 01

Oh, they bring in new people?

• 1:24:24Dax Shepard?

They break up the couples and the girls live in one house, the boys live in another house, and then they send in temptresses. And so like, all these women come out and they're in, and they're in bathing suits. So I'm like, this whole thing is really fascinating. Cause what is the line? Like, if you set it up, yeah, these are very vague lines.

• 1:24:41Speaker 01

  You mean like sex worker?

• 1:24:42Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Like you're hiring hot people to tempt other people and then hopefully they'll hook up with, it's very, it's very blurry.

• 1:24:50Speaker 01

And do, I mean, I guess who cares? The temptresses want to date? It's not, right?

• 1:24:55Dax Shepard?

They're claiming they do, but they were cast for being hot. They're not, it's not like they were like, I need to find love and I'm looking for someone already in a committed relationship that's claiming they want to go with it. That doesn't exist.

• 1:25:08Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:25:09Dax Shepard?

So, and you know, they're like, ah, these aren't real names, right? I'm just making them. It's like, I'm Tiara and I put all the back up front, like all these weird sayings and then they show their butt and stuff.

• 1:25:20Speaker 01

They put all the back up front? That means they have a huge vagina.

• 1:25:24Dax Shepard?

Well, no, I'm not mixing metaphors. I'm just saying words. Anyways.

• 1:25:28Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:29Dax Shepard?

  They say these things.

• 1:25:30Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:25:30Dax Shepard?

You know, this guy's like, I'm a chef and I'm gonna cook you hot. You know, like all these, they got on one line.

• 1:25:35Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:36Dax Shepard?

And I'm just like, you know, every time they say one of these.

• 1:25:40Speaker 01

  Of course, it's so cringy.

• 1:25:41Dax Shepard?

  It's a bummer.

• 1:25:42Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:43Dax Shepard?

It's a bummer. People, yeah, like you're already hot.

• 1:25:47Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:25:47Dax Shepard?

And then have to say something hot on top of it. But I'm saying all this saying, I know 10 years ago, I would have, I would have, they don't look right through most of that stuff. Although, the one I always loved was with Ryan Devlin. What was that? Are you the one?

• 1:26:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, we loved that.

• 1:26:02Dax Shepard?

Cause they really did want to fall in love. And be on TV.

• 1:26:08Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:26:08Dax Shepard?

  And be on TV.

• 1:26:09Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:26:10Dax Shepard?

But they were like, they thought they, people were like bawling and stuff.

• 1:26:14Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's like Bachelor.

• 1:26:15Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:26:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:26:16Dax Shepard?

But like, here's hot models that are gonna tempt you.

• 1:26:20Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:26:20Dax Shepard?

I just don't know how I feel about it. Anyways, I gave that a shot and then I didn't.

• 1:26:25Speaker 01

  It wasn't for you.

• 1:26:26Dax Shepard?

I didn't make it. Why did I bring that up? Just to tell you, oh, because we were talking about names.

• 1:26:30Speaker 01

  Yeah, names.

• 1:26:31Dax Shepard?

  And whose name?

• 1:26:32Speaker 01

  Whose name matches.

• 1:26:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah. And did you, why did I think of?

• 1:26:35Speaker 01

We're talking about Brad Pitt being hot.

• 1:26:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, hot.

• 1:26:37Speaker 01

Hot. That's how we got there. Yeah, I mean, look, I, I.

• 1:26:41Dax Shepard?

And I used to, I used to be able to name like 10 actor, female actors that I was like coveted.

• 1:26:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:26:48Dax Shepard?

And we're down to a couple.

• 1:26:50Speaker 01

  Really?

• 1:26:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:51Speaker 01

I mean, I'm saying really in like.

• 1:26:55Dax Shepard?

  It's, I'm dying.

• 1:26:56Speaker 01

No, no, really, like, I would assume that you do not have any anymore.

• 1:27:00Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:27:03Speaker 01

  Like.

• 1:27:03Dax Shepard?

Why would I have a nanny? You like, when would there be a day where you like Brad Pitt's not hot?

• 1:27:09Speaker 01

No, it's not that. It's just, things do change. Like, even for me, you know, today, an article came out in GQ about my boyfriend, one of my original boyfriends, Ben.

• 1:27:21Dax Shepard?

  Ben, okay.

• 1:27:22Speaker 01

And, you know, my friend said, you have to read this article.

• 1:27:27Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:27:27Speaker 01

About Ben. And I was like.

• 1:27:28Dax Shepard?

  It's a must read.

• 1:27:29Speaker 01

Yeah. And actually, she said, I know you're more of a Matt girl, but you have to do this. And then I got like old defensive, right? I was like, it's not one or the other. They're, that's, they're the same. Yeah. But I know at some point in my life, the idea that there was like new info about Ben, or that he would have

• 1:27:49Dax Shepard?

  A new detail.

• 1:27:50Speaker 01

participated in thing and I, and I, I would have been, I would have been so excited. I would have read it immediately. I would have canceled all my plans.

• 1:27:56Dax Shepard?

  Yes, yes, of course.

• 1:27:58Speaker 01

And I was like, oh, I gotta read that. Like, it like felt like a chore.

• 1:28:03Dax Shepard?

  Similar.

• 1:28:04Speaker 01

  I loved it.

• 1:28:05Dax Shepard?

  Oh, you did?

• 1:28:05Speaker 01

Yeah, it was, it's really good.

• 1:28:07Dax Shepard?

  What makes it so good?

• 1:28:09Speaker 01

  He's very open in it.

• 1:28:11Dax Shepard?

  Oh, like to what degree?

• 1:28:12Speaker 01

He, um, well, I also give a lot of credit to the interviewer. He's not going for low hanging fruit.

• 1:28:19Dax Shepard?

  Right, like every interviewer.

• 1:28:21Speaker 01

Exactly. And so in, in doing that, Ben says a lot of stuff.

• 1:28:26Dax Shepard?

Right, because he's not on the defensive.

• 1:28:27Speaker 01

Exactly, exactly. And I mean, he's just like owns a lot of things. He talks about, he, I mean.

• 1:28:36Speaker 01

I mean, there's nothing like majorly juicy, but he does talk about uh his relationship with uh Jen Lopez and he's basically like, yeah, everyone wants like a juicy headline. He's like, it's, it's just, it'd be so boring if you knew the details. It's just a relationship. It's just like she has things, I have things and it ultimately doesn't work.

• 1:28:57Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

Um, he's very like reflective of this thing about him that like people love to watch him spill coffee on the street and you know, and he said, I could have been more strategic. I, I should be more strategic. I shouldn't like go out and get the mail or go out in crappy clothes. I know people are gonna do a thing, but I just don't, I don't give a fuck.

• 1:29:21Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:29:22Speaker 01

And I liked that. And then, and he said, when he looks back on

• 1:29:26Dax Shepard?

I'm so grateful I'm not him.

• 1:29:28Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:29:29Dax Shepard?

  I am so grateful. No.

• 1:29:31Speaker 01

  It's so unfair.

• 1:29:32Dax Shepard?

Every now and then I see photos of me from out in front of my house and I'm like, oh, they sit there, you know, that's

• 1:29:37Speaker 01

  They sit there.

• 1:29:39Dax Shepard?

That's a bummer, but it's not like if I go to the store, there's ever.

• 1:29:43Speaker 01

And that people are waiting for you to do some things very silly.

• 1:29:47Dax Shepard?

Yes. And by the way, just make it through an entire walk to Starbucks from your car without looking goofy at one point.

• 1:29:53Speaker 01

Exactly, exactly. And, um, and he talks like about his kids, cause he has this production company with MAD and like the reason they started that is so he could be at home. He can like be with the kids when they get off the bus and he missed a lot of chunks. He said he missed a lot of chunks and he regrets that and he doesn't like that. And um, yeah, it was, it was great. It was great. I, I loved it. But also all to say like

• 1:30:18Dax Shepard?

You, you're interested, Wayne, a bit.

• 1:30:21Speaker 01

Just my perimenopause is kicking in.

• 1:30:24Dax Shepard?

  Same.

• 1:30:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:30:25Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:30:26Speaker 01

It makes sense, cause I'm Indian.

• 1:30:27Dax Shepard?

  Testeatrophy or something. Testicular atrophy.

• 1:30:30Speaker 01

And you're white, so we would be hitting it around the same time.

• 1:30:33Dax Shepard?

Cause I'm white. Yeah, yeah. You're 12 years early.

• 1:30:37Speaker 01

  Exactly, exactly. Um.

• 1:30:40Dax Shepard?

Can I tell you the thing that really interested me about Turning Point?

• 1:30:42Speaker 01

Yeah. Oh, wait, can we do one more thing?

• 1:30:44Dax Shepard?

  Yes, of course.

• 1:30:45Speaker 01

This is still sort of on subject of hotness. So I say that, right?

• 1:30:49Dax Shepard?

You were shocked that I have two still.

• 1:30:52Speaker 01

  Oh yeah. Who are they?

• 1:30:54Dax Shepard?

I probably have more. You know, it was reinvigorated. I went and saw Black Bag.

• 1:30:59Speaker 01

I was just about To bring it up.

• 1:31:01Dax Shepard?

  You saw it?

• 1:31:02Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:31:02Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God. You know what's great? I went solely because I saw Fassbender was in it. I had like an afternoon off and I went, I didn't know anything about it.

• 1:31:11Speaker 01

  Yep, me either.

• 1:31:12Dax Shepard?

  I enjoyed it so much.

• 1:31:14Speaker 01

  Me too.

• 1:31:15Dax Shepard?

The score was so good and I was angry at myself when I saw the titles like, oh, Soderbergh directed it. Of course, and that's of course, that's his signature kind of music and the style. I almost wanted to re-watch it again.

• 1:31:27Speaker 01

Oh, you didn't know till the end it was him?

• 1:31:29Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:31:30Speaker 01

Oh, that's why I saw it. I was like, oh, Soderbergh has to be.

• 1:31:33Dax Shepard?

Blessing because I was trying to figure out the tone of it quite a bit. If I knew it was Soderbergh, I knew it would be a lot more out of sight.

• 1:31:38Speaker 01

  Playful.

• 1:31:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I was more like, oh, this is hardcore British espionage shit. But I loved it, but I was reminded how much I love Alicia Vikander.

• 1:31:49Speaker 01

I didn't even realize it was her.

• 1:31:51Dax Shepard?

When he's interviewing her and she's passing the polygraph and they're talking about her anal sphincter.

• 1:31:55Speaker 01

Realized it was her the whole movie. I can totally just said that.

• 1:31:59Dax Shepard?

I bet. Am I right on that, Rob?

• 1:32:01Speaker 05

  I'm lucky and I don't know.

• 1:32:04Dax Shepard?

That would be really embarrassing if I have the wrong actor.

• 1:32:06Speaker 01

She looks like her now in retrospect.

• 1:32:09Dax Shepard?

  Did you like that actor?

• 1:32:10Speaker 01

Yeah, she was great, but I.

• 1:32:12Dax Shepard?

  Fassbender? Who's your crush?

• 1:32:15Speaker 01

It's crazy that you said it because what I was about to say is, you know, we're saying this lusty thing, but I saw Black Bag and I thought it was so sexy.

• 1:32:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:32:24Speaker 01

And he's so sexy in it.

• 1:32:27Dax Shepard?

Which is interesting because he's so reserved.

• 1:32:29Speaker 01

  But it's like.

• 1:32:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, controlled. His, his, his level of control is hot, right?

• 1:32:34Speaker 01

  Loves her so much.

• 1:32:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, fucking he'll just betray his country for her.

• 1:32:38Speaker 01

And she's so beautiful in it.

• 1:32:41Dax Shepard?

  Kate Blanchard?

• 1:32:42Speaker 01

Yes, and also like I'm really upset because her outfits are so cute in it. And then I just want all the outfits.

• 1:32:50Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:32:50Speaker 01

  Okay, really bad.

• 1:32:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:32:52Speaker 01

  Anyway.

• 1:32:53Speaker 05

I think that was her. Yeah.

• 1:32:55Speaker 01

  I think we could probably.

• 1:32:56Dax Shepard?

I think. Well, you're in front of a computer.

• 1:32:58Speaker 05

I, she's not listed on the IMDb.

• 1:33:01Dax Shepard?

You just go to Cass Blackbag.

• 1:33:03Speaker 05

I, well, she's not listed there, but.

• 1:33:06Speaker 01

  It's not her.

• 1:33:07Speaker 05

  The AI.

• 1:33:07Dax Shepard?

  It's not her.

• 1:33:08Speaker 01

Marissa, no, wait. Yep. Marissa Abuela.

• 1:33:12Dax Shepard?

Wait, what? Does that not look like her?

• 1:33:14Speaker 01

  It does look like her.

• 1:33:15Dax Shepard?

  And they're a couple.

• 1:33:16Speaker 01

  This girl is Marissa Abuela.

• 1:33:20Speaker 01

  She's, she was great.

• 1:33:21Dax Shepard?

  Oh, my God.

• 1:33:22Speaker 01

Oh, great. You can add her to.

• 1:33:24Dax Shepard?

  So humiliated.

• 1:33:24Speaker 01

You can add her to your list now.

• 1:33:26Dax Shepard?

  Although she's 28.

• 1:33:27Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:33:28Dax Shepard?

That's a little dicey. Wow, man, I'm embarrassed.

• 1:33:32Speaker 01

This is actually why you're liking Pete, young people less because I do think whether you are conscious of it or not, you know that you wouldn't really want to make that decision.

• 1:33:44Dax Shepard?

Oh, I couldn't date any of these people. Is that not abundantly clear?

• 1:33:47Speaker 01

No, no, it is clear, but I think, I think when you're like watching Temptation Island and it's like, God, it's just like not doing it for me. I think it's because there's a subconscious streak now going through. Like, as you've said before, there has to be some reality to your fantasy.

• 1:34:03Dax Shepard?

Well, okay, but let's back up for one second and just go like, societally, it's disgusting.

• 1:34:08Speaker 01

To have, to be with a younger person.

• 1:34:10Dax Shepard?

  When you're 50 years old and you're dating a 25 year old.

• 1:34:12Speaker 01

Also, I'm not here to judge.

• 1:34:13Dax Shepard?

  But I'm just saying societally.

• 1:34:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:15Dax Shepard?

  It's embarrassing.

• 1:34:16Speaker 01

  It can be embarrassing.

• 1:34:17Dax Shepard?

Out at a fucking dinner with all your, your peers and they all have wives as peers, as I do.

• 1:34:23Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:24Dax Shepard?

  And you've brought a 20 year old.

• 1:34:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:26Dax Shepard?

  That's fucking embarrassing.

• 1:34:27Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:28Dax Shepard?

I'm not saying people shouldn't do it, or I'm just saying I would be embarrassed.

• 1:34:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:34:33Dax Shepard?

To be at a dinner with all 50 year olds and I brought my 20 year old girlfriend.

• 1:34:36Speaker 01

  Yeah. So I think that's what's happening.

• 1:34:39Dax Shepard?

Genetically, evolutionarily, no, there's no, there's no reason a man would ever stop seeing fertile women as attractive. That's just, that, it would be my culture on top of it.

• 1:34:51Speaker 01

  Yeah, but your culture's a.

• 1:34:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, it is, it is.

• 1:34:53Speaker 01

Obviously, we have also evolved out status, like, status now doesn't just necessarily mean having as many kids as, like, you're done having kids, right?

• 1:35:03Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:35:04Speaker 01

Like, physically, you are done having kids.

• 1:35:06Dax Shepard?

Unless I got a reversal of my vasectomy. Yeah, yeah.

• 1:35:08Speaker 01

So, so you have also told.

• 1:35:11Dax Shepard?

But my, my genetics doesn't know I got a vasectomy.

• 1:35:13Speaker 01

  I don't know.

• 1:35:15Dax Shepard?

No, it can't take info in.

• 1:35:18Speaker 01

But the whole point that the reason that we have those genetics is still for status. It's for spreading as your seed as far and wide as you can.

• 1:35:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah, just to spread your seed. So genetically, I too am supposed to spread my seed. That's the pole.

• 1:35:32Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:33Dax Shepard?

  Inside.

• 1:35:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:34Dax Shepard?

And then on top of my biology is culture that's affecting a bunch of my behaviors.

• 1:35:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:35:42Dax Shepard?

All I'm pointing out is that there is no

• 1:35:47Dax Shepard?

a mother nature rule that I would not be attracted to someone that's.

• 1:35:51Speaker 01

No, I'm not saying there's a mother nature rule, but I'm, but it's, it's still, culture's still subconscious.

• 1:35:56Dax Shepard?

Culture is huge. Yes, it's totally subconscious.

• 1:35:58Speaker 01

That's what I was saying. Subconsciously, there is something in you that's like, that's not a reality anymore.

• 1:36:05Dax Shepard?

Yeah, well, I go to, mine's very complicated. I go to, I can't talk to, what would I talk to this person about? How would I spend hours with this person?

• 1:36:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:36:16Dax Shepard?

Um, I'm going to be talking about, you know, the time Prince was dead in 1983, we all fought.

• 1:36:22Speaker 01

You did talk about that recently.

• 1:36:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I also continue to, because that's what I grew up with. Anyways, man, but I see, I see folks my age just out doing it. I guess, I guess I, I don't know. I want to say applaud them, but I'm just like, I, we just have different levels. I guess it's, I guess it's a signal of confidence. It seems like a signal of insecurity.

• 1:36:45Speaker 01

  Yours?

• 1:36:45Dax Shepard?

When I see 50 plus year old actors with 20 year old actresses.

• 1:36:49Speaker 01

It's either insecurity and they need this like

• 1:36:54Speaker 01

woman to raise their status because they're beautiful.

• 1:36:58Dax Shepard?

They want a reflection of themselves.

• 1:37:00Speaker 01

Exactly. If this person likes me, then you guys should all like me, right? Which I, I can relate to that.

• 1:37:05Dax Shepard?

In some cases, not all. In some cases, I think it could be evidence of a lack of emotional maturity from the male, which is like, they've never gone past what relationships are in your twenties.

• 1:37:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:17Dax Shepard?

  They don't want to.

• 1:37:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:20Dax Shepard?

And they want someone that also wants a three year ordeal.

• 1:37:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:23Dax Shepard?

And nothing more, because that's the phase they're in.

• 1:37:26Speaker 01

Yeah, they, they don't want it to be that serious. The older you get, most women want something a little more serious.

• 1:37:36Speaker 01

  So there's that.

• 1:37:38Dax Shepard?

And I would imagine the percentage of three year relationships in your twenties that turn into lifetime versus three year relationships in your thirties that turn into lifetime. I think that's a dramatic difference.

• 1:37:48Speaker 01

  Probably yes.

• 1:37:49Dax Shepard?

  I'm guessing.

• 1:37:49Speaker 01

I would guess too. Yeah. Anywho.

• 1:37:53Dax Shepard?

Well, that was. Do you want to add any guys to your list? I know a lot of them. Idris Elba. The guy from.

• 1:38:01Speaker 01

That's a random one to say.

• 1:38:02Dax Shepard?

The guy from Heist. Matt Ben, Sean Penn.

• 1:38:09Speaker 01

This is why it's so funny. I know I'm sort of an outlier, like, or I've always liked older men.

• 1:38:18Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:38:19Speaker 01

Which is so opposite from men, you know, and I still do. I know from my female peers and friends that I, on the scale, am much more attracted to older men than they are.

• 1:38:40Dax Shepard?

Do you have an explanation for that?

• 1:38:41Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:42Dax Shepard?

  It's a maturity thing?

• 1:38:43Speaker 01

No, I think because I spent so much of my young life feeling like I had to protect everyone in the family.

• 1:38:53Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:38:54Speaker 01

I like the idea of not having to do that.

• 1:38:57Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:38:57Speaker 01

  And having a protector.

• 1:38:58Dax Shepard?

  To relax.

• 1:38:59Speaker 01

So in my head, the protector has to be older.

• 1:39:02Dax Shepard?

  Patriarchal a little bit.

• 1:39:03Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:39:04Dax Shepard?

Oh, okay. Interesting. Cause I was gonna hearken a guess that there's also some part of you, an insecure part.

• 1:39:13Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:39:13Dax Shepard?

That says older men value personality more.

• 1:39:17Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:39:19Dax Shepard?

No. And young men are just looking for like whatever Instagram model to inflate their own status.

• 1:39:26Speaker 01

No, because this is even when I was really young.

• 1:39:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, right.

• 1:39:29Speaker 01

Like when I was really young.

• 1:39:31Dax Shepard?

  Concocted this whole.

• 1:39:32Speaker 01

Yeah, I didn't like, I wasn't like, I mean, I guess I did like Leonardo DiCaprio on Titanic. I liked him, but I really liked David Boreanaz.

• 1:39:42Speaker 01

  Angel on Buffy.

• 1:39:45Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:39:45Speaker 01

And he was older, way older than me at the time.

• 1:39:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:39:50Speaker 01

So I was still even then attracted to like an older thing.

• 1:39:55Dax Shepard?

This is where it does get tricky is like, I trust you and your desires.

• 1:40:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:01Dax Shepard?

So if you want to date a 62 year old man.

• 1:40:04Speaker 01

Yeah. Well, we've talked about this. You don't want me to.

• 1:40:06Dax Shepard?

  I don't want you to.

• 1:40:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:08Dax Shepard?

But it's interesting that I have two conflicting ideas in my head, which is like, yeah, you should be able to be with a 62 year old man. And then kind of the inverse of that is like, I have to be able to not be judgmental of the 62 year old man that's with you.

• 1:40:22Speaker 01

  But you are.

• 1:40:25Speaker 01

  And I get it.

• 1:40:26Dax Shepard?

Although there is a threshold, but I bet it's kind of just because I'm 50. So to me, a threshold is around 35.

• 1:40:32Speaker 01

Yeah. God, that's so sad, but true.

• 1:40:35Dax Shepard?

  Right. I don't mind a 50 year old dating a 35 year old.

• 1:40:39Speaker 01

  No, me either.

• 1:40:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:40Speaker 01

  I don't mind a 60 year old dating a 35 year old. I know. We're a little, we're a little different on this, on this page.

• 1:40:49Speaker 01

  Ted.

• 1:40:49Dax Shepard?

  And again, I don't, I don't give a fuck. I just have questions.

• 1:40:53Speaker 01

Well, I don't have that many questions. It's like if the 60 year old is finally at the point in his life where he is ready to.

• 1:41:03Dax Shepard?

  Have some fun and travel.

• 1:41:05Speaker 01

Settle down. I mean, there is something about feeling, being with a young person that makes you.

• 1:41:11Dax Shepard?

  Energizes you.

• 1:41:12Speaker 01

Youthful and energized and not like your age. But also I think a 60 year, some of these 60 year old men who are hot.

• 1:41:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:22Speaker 01

Like have had all these women coming in and out of their life. They liked that. And now they're like, oh no, like I do wish I had someone to watch TV with. I don't.

• 1:41:32Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:41:33Speaker 01

I guess I gotta go to the people who do, and those are 35 year olds.

• 1:41:39Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 1:41:41Dax Shepard?

  Like to watch TV.

• 1:41:42Speaker 01

Yeah. I love to watch TV.

• 1:41:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:45Speaker 01

I watched all of Adolescence this weekend.

• 1:41:47Dax Shepard?

  Great.

• 1:41:48Speaker 01

  Great show.

• 1:41:50Dax Shepard?

  Great show.

• 1:41:51Speaker 01

  Really intense, beautifully done.

• 1:41:55Dax Shepard?

  Acting.

• 1:41:55Speaker 01

  Impressive. Holy shit.

• 1:41:57Dax Shepard?

  That boy.

• 1:41:58Speaker 01

  New, brand new.

• 1:41:59Dax Shepard?

Brand new. Talk about, for people who haven't seen it, we have mentioned it before, but all of it is in very long tape.

• 1:42:06Speaker 01

I don't know if they bridge some together or not. They might have, but it's sold as a one.

• 1:42:10Speaker 05

  They apparently didn't.

• 1:42:11Speaker 01

So for people who don't know, although I do think we said it, but just in case it's the story of a boy who's accused of murdering a 13 year old boy who's accused of murdering a girl that aged.

• 1:42:21Speaker 05

  Yes.

• 1:42:22Speaker 01

And it's four episodes, they're hour long, they're oneers. And it's really heartbreaking. It's intense, but like intense in the reality of life.

• 1:42:39Speaker 04

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 1:42:46Dax Shepard?

This episode is brought to you by ServiceNow. Look, I have my dream job. I get to talk to folks I admire like crazy and ask them virtually any question that I want to. They actually do it, start to finish, cases closed, requests handled, no extra work for you. So you and your team can focus on what matters most, which for me is are they obsessed with male bodies on the same level as I am?

• 1:43:28Speaker 01

  They never are.

• 1:43:41Dax Shepard?

I certainly don't want to re debate this. I did want to just point out post our debate about men and women that we had recently.

• 1:43:49Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:43:51Dax Shepard?

And in reading comments, I noticed there's a total lack of compassion for young men and particularly young white men. Totally get it. It's so well grounded. White men have been in power. They've had all the power and all the opportunities. So I'm asking you to feel bad for the group who's had all the power and all the opportunity and held all the wealth. But what occurred to me, and I think it's a distinction people need to make in their mind. The 12 year old wasn't a CEO of a company. He was not the patriarchy. He did not have the power.

• 1:44:28Speaker 01

  I agree.

• 1:44:29Dax Shepard?

I think we graft on the sins of previous generations under these young boys who were like 10 years old. They just arrived. They don't have any status or power or control. And you gotta make the distinction in your head. If you hope to have any compassion for this group that is by all metrics, struggling.

• 1:44:48Speaker 01

I think anyone who's really thinking about it does recognize.

• 1:44:52Dax Shepard?

And for 30 and above, go ahead and keep feeling that way. I don't mind that you think, oh, poor white men that are 30 and above.

• 1:44:57Speaker 01

Right. But I, I think most people who know what's going on do have compassion. And even if you don't have compassion, you, you have to have some fear and some level of like, this is a huge problem that has to, we have to look at.

• 1:45:14Dax Shepard?

  It's a tinderbox.

• 1:45:16Speaker 01

It is, it is. But I guess what's like the show depicts, and I think a great way is the outside influence on a lot of these boys. It gets into incel culture, which was funny because I was like, I don't know so much about that. Like, I don't know barely anything. They were, they're explaining a lot of stuff that I was like, oh my God.

• 1:45:38Dax Shepard?

My understanding of incels was like, it's a very fringe part of the internet where these guys who are like, I'm never going to have sex. And then they hate women. And then I saw this clip that went around, which is incredible. It's one of the very popular vlogging incel guys saying it was gay to have sex with women. I mean, that's all fucking twisted.

• 1:45:56Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:45:57Dax Shepard?

But I didn't realize it was like super common knowledge among young people. Or at least in England, if this shows to be believed.

• 1:46:06Speaker 01

Yeah. And there's a whole culture around it. There's emojis that mean things and it's a whole, and there's this like 80 20 rule where 80% of the women, it's part of like what incels say, which is, I think, true.

• 1:46:17Dax Shepard?

On social, or rather on dating apps.

• 1:46:19Speaker 01

Yeah. That 80% of women are interested in 20% of men. But then they take it to this level that's. So because of that, we have to hurt them. I just think it's like the least thought out fucking thing in the world to be like, so the answer to that is like hurt them and kill them. That means then zero percent of you. But that doesn't have to be like the rea- the reason is because a woman will be with a man who's not like that. Like the, it's like, it's dragging all these boys in to increase the chance that that will happen.

• 1:46:56Dax Shepard?

Well, there, yeah, they have to figure out what the 20% on dating apps are doing and replicate it.

• 1:47:01Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:47:02Dax Shepard?

Again, because the college, uh, graduation rates are dropping. And if you gotta be a college grad to get that 20%. I mean, hopefully that'll disincentivize these dudes to go to college. What, they gotta figure out what are the things?

• 1:47:13Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:14Dax Shepard?

And go get those things so they can get those mates. Also, I would hope women will start dating laterally. If that's the real dynamic on planet earth is that 80% of women are getting plowed by the same 20% of dudes. Like, that's not advantageous to them either. It's not good for women to all be fighting over 20% of the pool.

• 1:47:31Speaker 01

Well, I think what's really happening is that women are-

• 1:47:35Dax Shepard?

Go dormant and they don't care as much.

• 1:47:36Speaker 01

  I don't need that.

• 1:47:37Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:38Speaker 01

And the unfortunate reality is that's more and more true.

• 1:47:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:47:43Speaker 01

And I don't, I mean, I'm not saying that's good, but it is more true that like you can-

• 1:47:48Dax Shepard?

Well, yeah, you can be an independent.

• 1:47:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:47:50Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:47:50Speaker 01

And live like a happy, good life. That's the, but I, I would say most women-

• 1:47:55Dax Shepard?

I don't think boys are as capable of-

• 1:47:56Speaker 01

I agree. And so I think most women would prefer to be in a partnership, a good partnership.

• 1:48:05Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:06Speaker 01

Than be alone. But also I think what's starting to happen, obviously I can fully, um, uh, attest to this. We're also not going to be in a partnership that isn't equal, like that isn't good.

• 1:48:20Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:48:21Speaker 01

  It's preferred to be single.

• 1:48:22Dax Shepard?

I would say both are gonna suffer.

• 1:48:25Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:48:25Dax Shepard?

I think people should do what they've always done and form partnerships and-

• 1:48:30Speaker 01

  That are healthy though.

• 1:48:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:48:32Speaker 01

You know, like that's the whole issue.

• 1:48:33Dax Shepard?

I don't want anyone to be in a bad relationship, but I want everyone to have a partner and, um-

• 1:48:38Speaker 01

Feel fulfilled and have that companionship.

• 1:48:41Dax Shepard?

  The population.

• 1:48:42Speaker 01

Yeah. I, I agree. I agree. I just think it's getting- It's it's getting harder like it just is it's for everyone.

• 1:48:51Dax Shepard?

I just think way more people are losing now than ever have.

• 1:48:54Speaker 01

  Yeah, but even.

• 1:48:56Dax Shepard?

  Because these 20% of dudes.

• 1:48:59Dax Shepard?

You think any of them are settling down if they have access to 80% of all women.

• 1:49:03Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:49:03Dax Shepard?

That's fucked for them. That's not good for them.

• 1:49:06Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:49:07Dax Shepard?

It's certainly not good for the 80% of boys that are left out.

• 1:49:10Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:49:11Dax Shepard?

It's not good for the 80% of women trying to go up to 20% of it. I guess the only people that are maybe thriving are the 20% of women who are with the, I don't know. I don't fucking know. It seems it seems.

• 1:49:21Speaker 01

I don't know, but we also like, there's also the reality at play here, even though we're saying, we're saying this 80 20 rule, but there is a real truth. We talked about it on here all the time. I see it everywhere that men are not that attracted to highly independent accomplished women, most men. They're they're threatened by it and it's uncomfortable.

• 1:49:48Dax Shepard?

I think they're all attracted to it. I think they don't know how to handle it when they get it.

• 1:49:52Speaker 01

I also think a part of it is like for many men, I don't know. I think they think there's something masculine about it.

• 1:50:01Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:50:02Speaker 01

  Like that.

• 1:50:02Dax Shepard?

  Well, maybe for some, yeah.

• 1:50:04Speaker 01

There's like a role reversal. They don't like, they don't like the idea.

• 1:50:08Dax Shepard?

Cause their dad was the breadwinner and their mom was the.

• 1:50:10Speaker 01

So that's not attractive. I mean, I just, there's so many women I know that are single and like beautiful and thriving and real catches.

• 1:50:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:50:19Speaker 01

And they cannot, and they are dating, like they are out there, they are dating and it is not working.

• 1:50:25Dax Shepard?

It's not good. I guess what's interesting to think of is I have two daughters that will date and what do I want for them?

• 1:50:31Speaker 01

  Well, yeah.

• 1:50:34Speaker 01

I also think knowing you, you definitely want them to be with an equal partner.

• 1:50:41Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah. Yeah.

• 1:50:43Speaker 01

  They deserve that.

• 1:50:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I want them to be with an ambitious, go getter protector.

• 1:50:49Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:50:49Dax Shepard?

Who's confident. And will let them shine.

• 1:50:52Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:50:52Dax Shepard?

And if they don't, I'll fucking break their necks.

• 1:50:56Speaker 01

So right there is the reason. That's 20% of men. That's the whole thing. Like the expectation you have for your daughters is the expectation at this point that most, not most, but a lot of women have for themselves.

• 1:51:09Dax Shepard?

But if one of my daughters dated a dude who wasn't ambitious, who wanted to keep a really clean house and be a super involved dad.

• 1:51:19Speaker 01

  And was nice and

• 1:51:20Dax Shepard?

I wouldn't be like, you shouldn't be with that guy. He's not a man.

• 1:51:23Speaker 01

I think a lot of women, women would be fine with that. If they had their own thing going on. This is where we get into some weird sort of tricky. We had people write in distinct about this a lot. And there'd be like some tricky dynamics then because they'd come home and like in a reverse traditional situation, if it was a wife at home, a woman at home, they would be required to like, keep up the house and do the grocery shopping and do this and do this. But a lot of men now, maybe this will change. And I actually think that's going to be the answer, right?

• 1:51:57Dax Shepard?

All these, anyone who grew up watching a dad do that right now, they're on like, they're on third base.

• 1:52:01Speaker 01

Exactly, exactly. And there's no shame around it or like, I'm not a man. And I think, but a lot of, a certain generation of men, I think my, my generation may be the last one, right? Where it's like, they don't want to run a house.

• 1:52:21Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:52:22Speaker 01

So, and that feels emasculating and things like that. So this is where the whole like, not being with an ambitious, not being with an ambitious woman. It just is tricky.

• 1:52:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Now, let me ask you, this is a dangerous one, but do you think we can bump up against the limits of our biology at some point? Like, society evolves, culture evolves. But I do wonder at like, what point do you bump up against just how much culture can override biology?

• 1:52:48Speaker 01

I actually think culture can override it quite a bit over a long period of time. I don't think it's fast. But I

• 1:52:56Dax Shepard?

I think if you plotted you and I in the spectrum, I think we have different like inflection points of where that would be, I think.

• 1:53:02Speaker 01

Yeah, probably even where this all started where I think the culture has seeped in enough for like you to be, you would be embarrassed to do something that we

• 1:53:14Dax Shepard?

  Twenty-five years ago.

• 1:53:15Speaker 01

Were meant to do. Yes. That that's an indicator enough for me that like over time, things do change and then modeling changes. So like what your kids have seen is going to be different than their, you know, it's just, it's overall gonna shift.

• 1:53:31Dax Shepard?

We're highly flexible and adaptable. So maybe it'll work.

• 1:53:34Speaker 01

  That's true.

• 1:53:34Dax Shepard?

Also, we could see it fall off a cliff and go, huh?

• 1:53:38Speaker 01

We'll be dead by then. I think it's all right. Um, okay. Couple of facts, just a couple. Hot dog DNA.

• 1:53:45Dax Shepard?

  Ah, tell me.

• 1:53:46Speaker 01

Yeah, hot dog DNA. I've asked a lot of people this question that me and you had about, would you rather eat someone's hair, eat their skin, or eat their, um, but no, eat their

• 1:54:02Dax Shepard?

  Skin, hair, saliva.

• 1:54:04Speaker 01

Saliva. Exactly. Well, the whole thing is, no, not all hot dogs contain human DNA, but a 2015 study by Clear Labs found human DNA in 2% of the hot dog and sausage samples they tested, with two thirds of those samples being vegetarian. Um, I mean, it's really not that much. Um, but then it just, it just made us ask the question, what would you rather have of those three? And I've been asking a lot of people.

• 1:54:28Dax Shepard?

  Oh, what's the consensus?

• 1:54:29Speaker 01

  Everyone's all over the place.

• 1:54:31Dax Shepard?

Skin, saliva, and hair. Those are the options. We think that's what's getting into the hot dogs. Uh, I say saliva.

• 1:54:37Speaker 01

Yeah, you said saliva. You'd most like, you'd most rather have saliva.

• 1:54:41Dax Shepard?

You don't have to chew that. You're not gonna feel that in your mouth.

• 1:54:44Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:54:44Dax Shepard?

It's best to not even know you had the DNA go through.

• 1:54:48Speaker 01

Yeah. And I get, and like, I think a lot of people said saliva.

• 1:54:52Dax Shepard?

  You say hair.

• 1:54:53Speaker 01

I do. And that is controversial. No one's agreed with me.

• 1:54:56Dax Shepard?

What if it's a pubic hair?

• 1:54:57Speaker 01

  No, no.

• 1:54:59Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:54:59Speaker 01

  Nope.

• 1:54:59Dax Shepard?

  So a human hair.

• 1:55:01Speaker 01

  Head hair.

• 1:55:02Dax Shepard?

Okay. Which is probably dirtier than pubic hair.

• 1:55:05Speaker 01

No, no, I don't think so. I don't know. I, oh my God.

• 1:55:10Dax Shepard?

  Not an ass hair.

• 1:55:12Speaker 05

  Or arm hair?

• 1:55:12Dax Shepard?

  Mom's pubis hair.

• 1:55:13Speaker 01

  Arm pit? Or arm?

• 1:55:16Dax Shepard?

  Arm.

• 1:55:17Speaker 01

  Arm hair is fine.

• 1:55:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I prefer that over head hair.

• 1:55:20Speaker 01

  Yeah, me too, thinner.

• 1:55:22Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:23Speaker 01

Much thinner, but the reason I say that, I think it's out of self-defense. It's because my hair is all over the place and I think it's true that if you know me, you've eaten my hair.

• 1:55:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:36Speaker 01

Like to know me means you've eaten my hair.

• 1:55:38Dax Shepard?

  Unquestionably.

• 1:55:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:55:40Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, undoubtedly.

• 1:55:41Speaker 01

So I don't want to be gross, so I guess I'm trying to like, I'm lobbying that hair eating is fine.

• 1:55:46Dax Shepard?

What are people saying? They're saying slime, no?

• 1:55:49Speaker 01

Yeah, a lot of people, someone said skin, which was shocking to me. That's the worst. Well.

• 1:55:54Speaker 05

I think I would say skin.

• 1:55:56Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:55:57Speaker 05

When you're talking skin in a hot dog, it's gonna be like flakes.

• 1:56:00Speaker 01

No, we're talking, okay, this. Yeah, not, no, not the whole finger, cuz.

• 1:56:06Speaker 05

  Well, yeah, that's gross.

• 1:56:07Speaker 01

  A chunk of the skin.

• 1:56:09Dax Shepard?

He does make a good point that a tiny chunk of skin, again, would feel like the texture of the hot dog. And you largely wouldn't know.

• 1:56:15Speaker 01

  Yeah, you wouldn't know.

• 1:56:16Dax Shepard?

I gotta put hair last cuz you go, uh, and then you're trying to get.

• 1:56:20Speaker 05

  Keeps coming.

• 1:56:21Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:21Speaker 01

I know, I know, nobody likes that, but the reason is we've all done it.

• 1:56:26Dax Shepard?

What if it's like three feet of hair?

• 1:56:29Speaker 01

Well, this is the other thing, often.

• 1:56:30Dax Shepard?

Did you get your hair three feet long? No, two and a half.

• 1:56:33Speaker 01

  It's really long.

• 1:56:34Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:34Speaker 01

The other thing is if there is a hair in my food, which again, has always happens a lot.

• 1:56:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:42Speaker 01

I am always like, it's probably mine. I immediately say to myself, it's probably mine and then I don't look at the color and I don't think about.

• 1:56:48Dax Shepard?

And I don't have that luxury.

• 1:56:50Speaker 01

  Why?

• 1:56:50Dax Shepard?

Cuz if I start pulling a hair that's longer than three inches out of my mouth, it's not mine.

• 1:56:54Speaker 01

Well, it's not mine if it's this small.

• 1:56:56Dax Shepard?

Which can get up to nine, 12 inches.

• 1:56:58Speaker 01

See, it'd be yours. Yeah, look, I do think I'm in a rare group about hair. I can acknowledge that.

• 1:57:06Dax Shepard?

  That's cool. We're punk rock.

• 1:57:09Speaker 01

Okay, now the tooth brushing scene and bring it on. Just gonna play that.

• 1:57:14Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:57:17Speaker 01

Okay, she's brushing her teeth. He's putting the paste on, Colgate, I think. Now he's brushing. They're like, it's kind of like, neat cutie.

• 1:57:35Dax Shepard?

Do we know why they're sharing a bathroom right now?

• 1:57:37Speaker 01

No, I forget. Okay, he spit.

• 1:57:43Speaker 01

  Still brushing.

• 1:57:44Dax Shepard?

Do you have any more volume you can give him?

• 1:57:47Speaker 01

  He spit. He spit again.

• 1:57:49Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow, okay.

• 1:57:50Speaker 01

They're spitting and re-brushing. Now, I don't do this. I do it once. Okay, spit, spit. They're also not, they don't have two cases out right now.

• 1:57:59Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow, that's impressive.

• 1:58:02Speaker 01

  Spit, spit.

• 1:58:04Dax Shepard?

So it's kind of an aggressive back and forth. It's more of like a tit for tat, like a war.

• 1:58:09Speaker 01

  Anywho, well, that's that.

• 1:58:11Dax Shepard?

Oh, well, thank you for those facts.

• 1:58:14Speaker 01

  You're welcome.

• 1:58:15Dax Shepard?

  All right, I love you.

• 1:58:15Speaker 01

  Love you.
