And cool as the day is long.

• 1:36H. Foley?

Dude, you sound like a musician. The way you talk, it's crazy.

• 1:41Speaker 02

  He's got it, man.

• 1:42H. Foley?

You do. I'm happy to be here.

• 1:44Speaker 02

  Even that was cool.

• 1:47H. Foley?

Sure good to be here with you, fellers.

• 1:50Speaker 02

I look over, he's tuning a guitar. You're like, what the fuck?

• 1:53H. Foley?

This next one goes out to a fat guy I know. I'm throwing my underwear at you.

• 2:01H. Foley?

I love it. Musically, we got a million questions. We gotta get to the backstory, find out how you grew up. Give us the origin story.

• 2:10Speaker 02

  South Carolina.

• 2:11H. Foley?

  Greenville.

• 2:12Speaker 03

South Carolina, yeah, Greenville. So, upstate South Carolina.

• 2:17Speaker 03

  Not a great student.

• 2:19Speaker 02

Let's get that on the record.

• 2:20Speaker 03

  Get that out there.

• 2:21Speaker 02

Gotta wanna get out in front of these charges. Your honor.

• 2:25H. Foley?

  This isn't a job interview. You're good, don't worry.

• 2:30Speaker 03

I mean, I just came up playing music. My grandfather did it for a living and my dad did.

• 2:35Speaker 02

So it was in the household. That was it. There was no really other route for you to take.

• 2:39Speaker 03

Right. It was either that or like ministry. You know, it was like a family profession.

• 2:44H. Foley?

You should've been born in 1922. It's crazy. I was gonna ask you about the crossroads.

• 2:53Speaker 02

What was, what was, what was the town like neighborhood wise? Small town, rural, is it suburban? What was it?

• 3:00Speaker 03

It was, it was suburban, but it was like a, it was a nice neighborhood in the 50s.

• 3:05Speaker 02

  Okay, I got you.

• 3:06H. Foley?

Yeah, know exactly what you're talking about.

• 3:07Speaker 03

You know what I'm talking about. It was like a mill village. But the mill'd been closed down for a while.

• 3:12Speaker 02

  They shut the mill down.

• 3:13H. Foley?

  Man, say no more.

• 3:14Speaker 03

Exactly. So, it was a nice neighborhood in the 50s. Everybody in that neighborhood was like 70 plus.

• 3:21H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 3:22Speaker 03

My dad was 43 when I was born and his parents kinda watched me while he was at work.

• 3:28H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 3:28Speaker 02

Was he touring or was he local? Was he...

• 3:31Speaker 03

Yes, so when I was born...

• 3:32H. Foley?

And was he doing well? Was he, was he doing well as a musician?

• 3:35Speaker 03

He always did well as a musician, but he was really working class. He had, like, from the 70s to the 90s, he had worked with multiple bands who had good record deals, but they always kinda fell apart or he got screwed out of it somehow or another, because he was always just a guitar player.

• 3:50H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 3:51Speaker 03

  And...

• 3:51H. Foley?

Was he a studio guy? Would he be a studio guy?

• 3:53Speaker 03

He did some studio stuff as well. But after that last deal fell apart in the 90s in Nashville, he came back to Greenville. And my sister was born in 93. And that's when he like went back to church, rededicated his life. And he decided to get an office job and like tried to be like

• 4:12H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 4:12Speaker 03

Straight laced, he fucking hated it.

• 4:15Speaker 02

You can't tie that guy down.

• 4:16Speaker 03

  Nah.

• 4:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:17Speaker 03

  Marvin.

• 4:18Speaker 02

Guy's multiple record deals, all the next thing you know, he's selling like Ink Tony or something like that?

• 4:22Speaker 03

He was working for a contracting place, so he'd be the guy that's like, he'd send people out.

• 4:26Speaker 02

Uh huh, dispatcher or whatever, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 4:29Speaker 03

  And he hated it.

• 4:30Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 4:30Speaker 03

When I was younger, he started playing music again.

• 4:32H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 4:33Speaker 03

So he'd be out playing and I'd stay with my grandparents, but they were from the greatest generation, so I think, you know, I came up watching TV with them and it was like Sanford and Son, Andy Griffith Show, All in the Family, that kind of thing.

• 4:46Speaker 02

Mm-hmm. Damn, that guy's an old soul.

• 4:48H. Foley?

  He's 29.

• 4:49Speaker 02

  I know, it's crazy.

• 4:50H. Foley?

That's what I watched when I was a kid. So when did you start playing guitar?

• 4:54Speaker 03

Man, I was like two or three years old.

• 4:56Speaker 02

  That's crazy.

• 4:57Speaker 03

  It was always around.

• 4:59Speaker 02

Were you one of those kids too, like, did it, do you feel like it come, like it came naturally to it? Like, were you, obviously the world renowned, but like, was it very much like it just worked? Or did you work very hard at it, or a combination of both, probably?

• 5:12Speaker 03

I think a combination of both. I remember like, you know, I got a, like a first full scale guitar when I was seven years old.

• 5:19Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 5:19Speaker 03

And before that, I had a miniature Les Paul. And I just spent

• 5:22Speaker 02

  That's crazy.

• 5:23H. Foley?

I didn't know they made them.

• 5:24Speaker 03

All my hours I spent just in the back room and just cranking it, cranking it out. And, um, I don't know, man, I didn't have any friends. I was just kind of a loner kid. You know, probably undiagnosed, some type of autism.

• 5:38Speaker 02

Sure, I mean, that's the best kind though.

• 5:40Speaker 03

  Spent hours watching

• 5:41Speaker 02

Just unregulated autism to really get into a, into a mini Les Paul, dude.

• 5:45Speaker 03

  Yeah, dude.

• 5:46H. Foley?

Real good musicians are real red flag when it comes to that too.

• 5:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:51Speaker 02

No friends, but he's melting faces in the back room.

• 5:55Speaker 02

He just got him a new whammy bar.

• 5:58Speaker 02

Man, I could never figure out that way. I've tried playing guitar. And that guy introduced that to me like two months in. I was like, buddy, you're crazy.

• 6:05H. Foley?

I could never, I could never get past tuning the guitar, uh, from the strings. Like, you see how it sounds the same? I had no idea. Can you tune it by ear?

• 6:14Speaker 02

  What?

• 6:15H. Foley?

  I don't know.

• 6:16Speaker 02

I'll tune you by ear. Are you kidding me?

• 6:19Speaker 03

I mean, kind of a D flat. It was kind of, you know, cause a lot of guys do like alternate tunings, like open tunings and shit.

• 6:25H. Foley?

  It's like they'll tune down from D.

• 6:27Speaker 03

Yeah. Like I could do like, I can do that. Um, I do like an open G tuning sometimes, but like a lot of people ask me like, why I don't ever do, use like, uh, open E tuning? Or something like Derek Trucks would use. And I remember distinctly like being in the back room and like trying to learn how to, you know.

• 6:45H. Foley?

  Tune it down?

• 6:46Speaker 03

Tune it to open E. And my grandfather being in the, you know, the, the front room watching TV and he heard me like. And he's like, you're gonna break that goddamn string. You're gonna break it. And then I did, I popped it and like, he wouldn't change the string for me. And he was just, he was really belligerent about it. And I never really fooled with open tunings after that.

• 7:05H. Foley?

No kidding. So it's just, it's tuned, you're, most times when you play the songs you write, it's tuned in E?

• 7:12Speaker 03

  Just standard, yeah.

• 7:13Speaker 02

  No shit. Damn.

• 7:14H. Foley?

I always thought that was a cheat code to tune it down.

• 7:17Speaker 03

Uh, you could, you could find some interesting ways to play on that.

• 7:20H. Foley?

  Makes it easier.

• 7:21Speaker 03

  Yeah. Sometimes.

• 7:24Speaker 02

I never realized I was sitting next to Les Paul.

• 7:31Speaker 02

You sold your guitar like 15 years ago for drugs. What are you talking about?

• 7:34H. Foley?

  Luke, look at my ibanez.

• 7:39H. Foley?

  Go get my squire.

• 7:41Speaker 02

I had a squire. I had a P bass. It was a squire P bass too. A little package you would buy. I stunk. I tried everything. I was so bad.

• 7:48H. Foley?

So how far away did your grandparents live from your parents? And what did your mom do? Where was your mom in all this?

• 7:52Speaker 03

My mom, she kind of split out when I was like four.

• 7:56H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 7:56Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 7:57Speaker 03

My parents, um, my parents got divorced.

• 8:00Speaker 02

Damn, you are a musician. Holy shit. He also said split out.

• 8:04Speaker 03

  Split out, yeah.

• 8:05Speaker 02

Was there, was she in, was there, did you see her at all or that was just kind of it?

• 8:09Speaker 03

  I saw her later on.

• 8:10Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 8:10Speaker 03

You know, she kind of got mixed up with some, some bad folks here and there. So I would see her occasionally.

• 8:18Speaker 03

You know, she remarried to my stepdad who was, uh. He was a really good guy when he wasn't drinking, but he was always drinking.

• 8:26Speaker 02

I had one of those too.

• 8:27Speaker 03

  You know, just like.

• 8:28H. Foley?

Stayed in the same, was she in the same town? Was she in Greenville as well?

• 8:31Speaker 03

She was, I don't know where she was for a while there.

• 8:33H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 8:34Speaker 03

And then she was kind of in the backwoods out in this place called Belton, South Carolina.

• 8:40Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 8:41Speaker 03

But, uh, my sister and I were mostly at my dad's place.

• 8:44H. Foley?

  Right.

• 8:44Speaker 03

  And, um.

• 8:45Speaker 02

And it was your dad's parents that you were watching?

• 8:47Speaker 03

  And they lived next door.

• 8:48H. Foley?

  No kidding? Alright.

• 8:49Speaker 03

My dad got the house next to them in 1977 for like $20,000, you know? Um, and, uh, yeah, I just spent all my hours just with my grandparents playing guitar.

• 9:01Speaker 02

  Damn. Okay.

• 9:03H. Foley?

  That's wild.

• 9:04Speaker 02

  I know.

• 9:04H. Foley?

And how old were your grandparents at the time?

• 9:07Speaker 03

They were older, so, um, I guess they must've been like 75.

• 9:11H. Foley?

And your dad was gone for like a week at a time and overnight?

• 9:15Speaker 03

  Mostly just overnight.

• 9:17H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 9:17Speaker 03

At that time, he was playing with like wedding bands, like just good money.

• 9:21Speaker 02

Gotcha. Good money, what kind of local gigs?

• 9:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:24Speaker 02

  Gotcha.

• 9:24H. Foley?

Gotcha. Damn. Huh. What was the grocery store that you guys were going to as a kid?

• 9:29Speaker 03

  We went to Bi-Lo.

• 9:30Speaker 02

  Bi-Lo?

• 9:31Speaker 03

It's a food line now, but.

• 9:32H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 9:32Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 9:34H. Foley?

  Bi-Lo.

• 9:34Speaker 02

I don't hate a Bi-Lo. And, uh, what was, I, you, at one point you, you dropped out of school, correct?

• 9:42Speaker 03

  I did, yeah.

• 9:42Speaker 02

  At what age was that?

• 9:43Speaker 03

  I was 17.

• 9:44Speaker 02

17, so senior, junior, senior year?

• 9:47Speaker 03

Junior. It's, it's my wife's favorite thing to tell people that I dropped out of high school. She thinks it's great.

• 9:52Speaker 02

That's, it is dude, it is, I don't know why, but for dirtbags, it is such a badge of honor, like, he didn't drink, I dropped out at 17, you know?

• 10:00H. Foley?

So no, no friends, no hanging out, no traditional, uh, like growing up, high school thing? Did you play like Little League and stuff like that?

• 10:07Speaker 03

Nah, like, I don't know, man, like.

• 10:10H. Foley?

So you were in that room playing the guitar?

• 10:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:12Speaker 02

  That's how you get.

• 10:15Speaker 03

I wanted to be in the Cub Scouts and it's like, around the time that I was of age to do like Cub Scouts and stuff, there was a lot of stories coming out.

• 10:24Speaker 02

That's a great way, this guy's been media trained. A lot of stories coming out.

• 10:29H. Foley?

He ain't talking about ghost stories either.

• 10:32Speaker 02

Oh, I mean, maybe you were, I don't know. Uh, yeah, okay, yeah, right, cause you're younger, so that, that kind of all popped at that point?

• 10:39Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 10:39Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 10:40Speaker 03

My, my dad never wanted me to like. Hurt myself or anything because I was playing guitar so much.

• 10:45Speaker 02

Yeah, I think if you're that good at a young age and your dad, your dad's musician, your grandfather's musician, it's like.

• 10:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 10:51Speaker 02

  Yeah, let's not go.

• 10:51H. Foley?

Could they, could they see it?

• 10:54Speaker 03

They could see it from an early age and just like my passion about it.

• 10:57H. Foley?

  Uh huh.

• 10:57Speaker 03

The hours I spent doing it, you know.

• 10:59H. Foley?

What are we talking about? Okay, you're, let's say you're, you're 12 years old, your dad's got a gig, you and your sister are over at your grandparents. Um, you get home from school.

• 11:09Speaker 02

  Three o'clock.

• 11:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 11:11Speaker 02

  You write on it?

• 11:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 11:13H. Foley?

Watching cartoons, getting something to eat.

• 11:15Speaker 02

  What, what's that?

• 11:15Speaker 03

Yeah, dude. My, my grandmother, she was, uh, from Munich, Germany.

• 11:19Speaker 02

  No shit.

• 11:20Speaker 03

She had this really intense like, uh, uh, German and southern cuisine.

• 11:26H. Foley?

  Alright.

• 11:26Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 11:26Speaker 03

She was always cooking like something amazing.

• 11:29Speaker 02

My wife's German, so yeah, I get it, yeah, yeah.

• 11:31H. Foley?

A little schnitzel, she make a schnitzel?

• 11:32Speaker 03

  Oh dude, yeah.

• 11:33Speaker 02

  I had some last night.

• 11:34H. Foley?

  Did you?

• 11:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's great.

• 11:36Speaker 03

  It's the best.

• 11:36Speaker 02

I didn't know, I, I've heard schnitzel my whole life and then when I married, I'm like, oh, it's just a cutlet.

• 11:40Speaker 03

It's a fried pork cutlet, yeah.

• 11:42Speaker 02

Exactly, it's great, it's the best.

• 11:44H. Foley?

Alright, so it's three o'clock, you get home, she's got something to eat.

• 11:47Speaker 03

Got something to eat for me, you know, um, I was definitely a bigger kid.

• 11:51H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 11:51Speaker 03

Cause I was just, you know, sitting still, playing guitar, eating, uh, watching cartoons. So I'd just have like wrestling or cartoons on and just.

• 12:00H. Foley?

  In the living room?

• 12:01Speaker 03

Uh, no, in my back room. I had this little blue chair, TV set and my guitar. I'd just sit and play for hours.

• 12:08Speaker 02

What was that, what was the wrestler of the time?

• 12:10Speaker 03

Wrestler of the time for me was Stone Cold.

• 12:12Speaker 02

Shout out to Stone Cold, baby.

• 12:14Speaker 03

  I've got a Stone Cold.

• 12:15Speaker 02

A man after my own heart.

• 12:16Speaker 03

I've got a Stone Cold poster in my gym.

• 12:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 12:18Speaker 03

You just don't want to let him down.

• 12:20Speaker 02

Dude, what a way to put that. Uh, yeah, man, Stone Cold hit like a tsunami. It was, he was something else. Just a cool, also then they know southern, I didn't even have that, but like that guy was the cool, we, we would try to get him on the show, but to no avail.

• 12:36H. Foley?

Did you play in a band in high school or anything like that?

• 12:39Speaker 02

Did you play in like jazz band or anything when, in school?

• 12:41Speaker 03

It's, it's funny you bring that up, like, uh, somebody just reached out the other day and let me know that my jazz band teacher died.

• 12:48Speaker 02

  Ah, sorry to hear.

• 12:49Speaker 03

Mr. Caldwell. And he was, he was really cool, but. There was like this weird thing in the jazz band because all the other kids were like upset because like I played bass, I played drums, I played guitar. And I was just like, I was excelling in the, in the program, you know? And they were all upset about it. And, and Bruce was like, look, you know, I'll just give you a free period. Like you don't have to do anything because they're all getting upset, you know?

• 13:15H. Foley?

  Getting upset? I don't understand.

• 13:16Speaker 03

  And he was like-

• 13:17Speaker 02

Going in there and shredding, always stealing everybody's job.

• 13:19Speaker 03

Like he was about to retire and he was just like, I just don't want to fucking deal with it.

• 13:22Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 13:23Speaker 03

He was, he was always really cool and I would just like skip class during that, but-

• 13:27H. Foley?

Could he, obviously he could see it too?

• 13:29Speaker 03

  Yeah, and he always-

• 13:30Speaker 02

At that point, you're really, at seven, in like a high school, you're probably really good.

• 13:34Speaker 03

Like fifteen and sixteen, I was, I was working as a musician, you know, I had a band full of like forty year old men.

• 13:40Speaker 02

Uh, with like wife and kids at home and I was working this like four or five nights a week. Where?

• 13:46Speaker 03

Like around Greenville, the upstate area.

• 13:48Speaker 02

You're flat, Randy, pick it up. Yelling at some guy.

• 13:53Speaker 03

  Yeah, dude.

• 13:54Speaker 02

  That's sick.

• 13:55Speaker 03

Yeah. My drummer was like forty-five. His name was Tracy Littlejohn.

• 14:00Speaker 02

What a name. What is with these other names? They're perfect.

• 14:04Speaker 03

He had a, he had a pistol in his stick bag. He was just, uh, one of the coolest motherfuckers ever.

• 14:10Speaker 02

  Damn.

• 14:11Speaker 03

Um, he kept an eye out for me out there. Um, yeah, I just had a, a band full of just grown men and-

• 14:18Speaker 02

  How do you find them?

• 14:19Speaker 03

Well, through working with my dad.

• 14:21Speaker 02

  Working with your dad.

• 14:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 14:22H. Foley?

And how do you, like, I know you're good, but like, how do you get, do they just hear you play and they're like, oh yeah, we'll, we'll sit behind this kid?

• 14:29Speaker 03

  Right.

• 14:30H. Foley?

  Right?

• 14:31Speaker 02

  It's as simple as that.

• 14:33Speaker 03

Well, and then there was kinda like the, uh, you know, um-

• 14:38H. Foley?

Like who sits your ass behind that slide guitar? The kid's leading this one.

• 14:43Speaker 03

  Right. It was kinda like-

• 14:44H. Foley?

And were you writing songs and singing and all that stuff?

• 14:46Speaker 03

Yeah, I started writing around the time I was like thirteen, fourteen.

• 14:49H. Foley?

Man. Were you playing originals, doing these shows around, around the area?

• 14:53Speaker 03

For the most part there, I was doing a lot of covers.

• 14:56H. Foley?

Who were you, who were you covering?

• 14:58Speaker 03

We were covering like Little Feet, Allman Brothers Band. Um, we would do like old like beach classics. Cause like in South Carolina, North Carolina, beach music is like a thing. It's like, um- And I, I was really, it was crazy to me, I found out like-

• 15:14H. Foley?

Like Surfing Bird and stuff like that?

• 15:15Speaker 03

No, it's like, it's, it's like old soul music.

• 15:19H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 15:19Speaker 03

Like, uh, The Temptations or like, um, we had bands like, uh, The Sham or The Tams and like, uh, there was like these, this really niche brand of like-

• 15:30H. Foley?

  Huh.

• 15:30Speaker 03

  We call it beach music.

• 15:31Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 15:32H. Foley?

  Beach music.

• 15:32Speaker 03

  Called shagging music, South Carolina.

• 15:34H. Foley?

  Shagging music.

• 15:35Speaker 03

So we did that kinda thing.

• 15:36Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 15:37H. Foley?

Give me a couple of other songs that would be considered that, cause Temptations, that's, that's Motown us.

• 15:41Speaker 03

Right. So like Motown, all the Motown stuff fits into like the shag category.

• 15:46Speaker 02

  Shag?

• 15:47Speaker 03

Yeah, S-H-A-G. Um, there was a guy named Willie T. was a big shag artist.

• 15:53Speaker 02

Carolina Beach and Shag. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Okay. Beach music, also known as Carolina Beach music, and to lesser extent, beach pop is regional genre of music in the United States. Uh, developed from rock, R and B, pop music in the 1950s and 60s. Okay.

• 16:06H. Foley?

So when you start playing these things, you, you, you guys, you start making some money? Start making good money doing this?

• 16:11Speaker 03

  Start making a little bread.

• 16:12H. Foley?

The crowds, crowds are getting big?

• 16:14Speaker 03

Yeah. Crowds are getting big, you know, it was, there was kind of a, a shift where people were coming to watch the ballgame at the bar and then they'd start listening to us.

• 16:22H. Foley?

  Sure.

• 16:22Speaker 03

And we were catching a lot of runoff from like the widespread panic fans.

• 16:26Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 16:27H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 16:27Speaker 03

  You know?

• 16:27H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 16:28Speaker 03

That was kinda our bread and butter, was like the, uh, 45-year-old like widespread panic deadhead type of individual.

• 16:36H. Foley?

  No kidding?

• 16:37Speaker 03

  You know?

• 16:38Speaker 02

  Huh.

• 16:38H. Foley?

  With a 14, 15-year-old kid leading it?

• 16:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 16:41H. Foley?

  Damn.

• 16:41Speaker 02

That's sick. And then when, I guess the, the decision to drop out of school, was that like, money-wise or just attention span-wise, like time-wise?

• 16:50H. Foley?

  How bad were the grades?

• 16:51Speaker 03

  Man, they were terrible.

• 16:52H. Foley?

And you weren't going to parties and stuff like that, or?

• 16:55Speaker 03

Man, I went to a couple of parties and I just was never really welcomed. And the people at the school, they hated me, but they didn't really know what I did. They thought I was just a dropout, you know? They thought I was-

• 17:07Speaker 02

  Misunderstood.

• 17:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:08H. Foley?

Were they preppy kids? Were they?

• 17:10Speaker 03

Yeah, it was a pretty conservative area of the country and, you know, long hair. I'd smell a pot when I'd show up in the morning, you know?

• 17:18H. Foley?

Were you like wearing this, like when you were like 14?

• 17:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 17:20H. Foley?

  And my sandals.

• 17:22Speaker 02

  Yeah, dude.

• 17:24Speaker 03

  My Birkin socks.

• 17:25Speaker 02

He's showing up like a goddamn rock star.

• 17:26H. Foley?

What about the glasses? You weren't wearing the red glasses back then, were you?

• 17:29Speaker 03

I, yeah. I mean, I had a different kind, but yeah.

• 17:33H. Foley?

  Man, that's awesome.

• 17:34Speaker 03

Cause the lights always bug my eyes. But, you know, they just, they thought I had like no ambition. But I just, little did they know, like I was really working on something.

• 17:43Speaker 02

  Have the most ambition.

• 17:44H. Foley?

You never had the moment where you got to get up and shred it in front of the talent show or something like that?

• 17:48Speaker 03

In fifth grade, I did that.

• 17:51Speaker 03

In fifth grade and I had a set of healies and I healed across the stage.

• 17:54Speaker 02

No shit. Let's go. I mean, talk about the coolest kid in town.

• 17:59H. Foley?

You had a Lynyrd Skynyrd backing him up. That still wasn't enough?

• 18:02Speaker 03

  Still wasn't enough.

• 18:03Speaker 02

What was the song? Do you play? Do you remember?

• 18:06Speaker 03

  That's a good question. I don't remember.

• 18:08H. Foley?

  Was it MMBop, I'm sure?

• 18:10Speaker 03

  It wasn't MMBop.

• 18:11H. Foley?

Which is a good song, by the way.

• 18:13Speaker 03

Those guys came and saw us play in, uh, uh, it wasn't Albany, New York. It was somewhere upstate New York.

• 18:19H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 18:19Speaker 03

They were playing and they, uh, they came over and hung out with us after our show, which was funny.

• 18:23H. Foley?

  Okay, but something about Ethos.

• 19:55H. Foley?

Okay, but let's talk about the new Ridge Wallet Power Bank, baby.

• 19:58Speaker 02

Ooh, is that the new Ridge Wallet Power Bank you got cooking over there, big dog?

• 20:02H. Foley?

This is a solid looking piece of equipment right here.

• 20:04Speaker 02

  Tactical.

• 20:05H. Foley?

This thing is fantastic. You got both your cords there, snaps right in there, nice and easy. Ooh, this thing is easy peasy.

• 20:10Speaker 02

That's for what we call in the business, operators.

• 20:13H. Foley?

  Yeah, that thing's sick.

• 20:15Speaker 02

You're moving different when you got the Ridge Wallet Power Bank.

• 20:18H. Foley?

  Look at that.

• 20:19Speaker 02

  Whoo, I didn't know that.

• 20:21H. Foley?

  A little kickstand for it.

• 20:22Speaker 02

Big man's finding all the features out on this joint. Uh, that's, listen, Ridge Wallet obviously makes fantastic products. They've been doing a wallet forever. It's fantastic. They've been at the cutting edge of all of that technology that is needed in the new wallet, in the new world we're living in.

• 20:37H. Foley?

Every serious operator I know's got the Ridge Wallet.

  Uh huh.

• 20:40H. Foley?

  Get the Power Bank.

• 21:09Speaker 02

They're taking care of you, dog. One thing to pack, five ways to power.

• 21:35Speaker 03

But the reason I dropped out of high school was because you guys are familiar with truancy, I'm sure.

• 21:40Speaker 02

Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I'm sure. What are you trying to, what are you trying to rope me into your, your delinquent ass? No way. You guys are dirtbags.

• 21:47H. Foley?

  100%. You're in good company.

• 21:49Speaker 03

I mean, my sister was really the one that was true.

• 21:52Speaker 02

  Really?

• 21:52Speaker 03

She would skip school every day. My dad'd drop her off. She'd go out the back door and go off, do whatever she was doing. And when we finally, we went to court about it and Anderson School District made it clear, like, any child in the home that's also in Anderson School Districts has to sign this, like, pledge. It's like, it hangs over you your entire, you know, time through school. So I had this thing hanging over me. And of course, like, three months later, my sister turned seventeen and dropped out. And I was in eighth grade, or ninth grade at this time. So ninth and tenth grade, everything was cool. But in eleventh grade, I'd show up late or like, I would, um...

• 22:29H. Foley?

You're getting off the road or something like that. Yeah.

• 22:31Speaker 03

I'd show up late and they really started, you know, busting my chops about it and they, they were gonna send me to like a reformatory school down in Columbia.

• 22:39H. Foley?

Did they know what you were doing?

• 22:40Speaker 03

No. And they wanted to like shave my head and...

• 22:43Speaker 02

  What?

• 22:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:44Speaker 02

Sounds like it was in the fifties.

• 22:46H. Foley?

  This was fifteen years ago.

• 22:48Speaker 03

I know. And they were like telling me I was gonna end up in prison and all this shit. And they were just really, they were very cruel to me.

• 22:55Speaker 02

That's brutal, man. I'm sorry to hear that.

• 22:56H. Foley?

  Yeah, it sucks.

• 22:57Speaker 03

The only saving grace was like, in the afternoons, I went to, uh, it's like a vocational school.

• 23:02Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 23:02Speaker 03

But they had like dancing and, uh, they had a jazz department there. And I studied jazz theory, which was different from high school jazz band. It was like a collegiate level, like, theory program.

• 23:14Speaker 02

Yeah, like the deep dive into it.

• 23:15Speaker 03

And I would've stayed in high school to stay there another year. But I just, I couldn't put up with my, my high school anymore. So I just decided to drop out. I got my GED.

• 23:25Speaker 02

  At that same time?

• 23:26Speaker 03

Yeah. Right away. I just, I just went straight into it.

• 23:30Speaker 02

Smart move. Now, okay, let's say you, you're dropped out. What, uh, what's the cash situ- are you like, you're like piecing together money from gigs? Is that, are you like sitting kinda pretty? Do you gotta, are you saving? What's the car?

• 23:43Speaker 03

Right. So I had a Chrysler Town and Country, two thousand one.

• 23:47Speaker 02

Man, that was a great year for the Town and Country. We're a big minivan team over here.

• 23:52Speaker 03

  Same.

• 23:53Speaker 02

There's nothing better. They, they got more space than anything. Low profile. They got a little giddy up in them.

• 23:59Speaker 03

All, all of that. I mean, I had the best deal for anybody that was working with me because I carried the base rig. I carried the PA.

• 24:06Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 24:07Speaker 03

I carried the lights all in my minivan. I was fourteen and fifteen, so I could only drive with a licensed driver in the car.

• 24:15Speaker 03

So I would hire the band on the basis of like, you do whatever you want.

• 24:19H. Foley?

  Little John's Riding Shotgun.

• 24:20Speaker 03

Yeah, Little John's Riding Shotgun. We're going down to Augusta, Georgia. We're gonna play this gig. Come on.

• 24:25Speaker 02

But just get in the van. I got everything else taken care of. Get in.

• 24:28H. Foley?

  Who was booking the gigs?

• 24:30Speaker 03

  I was booking them.

• 24:30H. Foley?

  You were booking them?

• 24:31Speaker 03

Yeah. I was calling these clubs. I was using a fake name, sending emails, pretending like I was representing. That's...

• 24:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 24:38H. Foley?

  Wow.

• 24:39Speaker 02

  I love this.

• 24:40H. Foley?

Did they know you were 14 and 15 when you were doing that?

• 24:42Speaker 03

  No.

• 24:43H. Foley?

What would they say when you would show up?

• 24:45Speaker 03

  It was mixed, uh...

• 24:47H. Foley?

Until you started playing, I assume.

• 24:49Speaker 03

Yeah. But, I mean, it was never really too much an issue because... I'd run into issues because, like, when I started trying to drink, you know? But, I mean, that wasn't until later, till I was like 18, 19, 18. And even then, I would keep it under wraps. But, um, you know, I have a baby face now. So when I'm 14, like, it was really like, we got this kid that plays the guitar well, and the bandmates would be my chaperones.

• 25:16H. Foley?

  Right.

• 25:17Speaker 03

You know? So I'd kinda set it up like that, and they'd let me come in, and it was kind of a... It was kind of a gimmick, you know?

• 25:23H. Foley?

  They're all fucked up?

• 25:24Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 25:24Speaker 03

Yeah. And they were looking after me, and it was... The gimmick was like, you come see this kid play.

• 25:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:29Speaker 03

And it's like, nobody's gonna give me alcohol. You know, if you saw me at 14, you was...

• 25:34H. Foley?

You'd have the chops, didn't you, back then?

• 25:35Speaker 03

No, I couldn't grow anything. No.

• 25:37H. Foley?

Sick if you did. Back to the fifth grade.

• 25:41H. Foley?

  Coming out in the wheelies.

• 25:44Speaker 02

  That's crazy.

• 25:47H. Foley?

Holy shit. That's... This is nuts.

• 25:49Speaker 02

  That's... I mean, what...

• 25:50H. Foley?

  What a life, man. Unbelievable.

• 25:52Speaker 02

It's so... It's like such a unique story that we've never had.

• 25:57H. Foley?

And then how long does this go on?

• 25:58Speaker 02

I have one... Did you work... Have you ever worked a straight job? Like, what was like your fir... You know, did you work at like the Burger King or something?

• 26:04Speaker 03

So, I worked at the Mellow Mushroom.

• 26:07Speaker 02

  What's that?

• 26:08Speaker 03

You guys don't have Mellow Mushroom up here, that's right.

• 26:10Speaker 02

  I don't think so.

• 26:10H. Foley?

  Mellow Mushroom?

• 26:11Speaker 03

  Mellow.

• 26:11H. Foley?

  Mellow Mushroom?

• 26:12Speaker 03

Mellow Mushroom. And it's a pizza joint.

• 26:14Speaker 02

I thought, I've seen the pizza joint, Mellow Mushroom.

• 26:17Speaker 03

  It's really, it's really good.

• 26:20Speaker 03

I don't think we have them, uh, north of like, Virginia, I wanna say. So it's kind of a regional pizza joint, but it's like a hippie themed pizza joint, so I fit in really great there.

• 26:31H. Foley?

  Right.

• 26:31Speaker 03

I started off as a dishwasher, uh, worked my way up to the line chef.

• 26:36Speaker 02

  Damn.

• 26:36H. Foley?

  There you go.

• 26:37Speaker 02

  That's a, that's a pretty big jump.

• 26:38Speaker 03

You know, I was doing that, and then, uh, I got fired, then I came back and I was a host.

• 26:45Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 26:46Speaker 03

And I would seat people, bring them drinks.

• 26:48H. Foley?

How old are you doing this?

• 26:49Speaker 03

  I was like sixteen.

• 26:50H. Foley?

So you're, this is why you're doing the, the shows and stuff?

• 26:53Speaker 03

  Yeah, so.

• 26:53H. Foley?

So you still needed a little extra income?

• 26:55Speaker 03

Yeah, like that, that summer I was doing, ho, or, uh, uh, summer school and I was doing the pizza joint and I was playing guitar in the evenings.

• 27:03Speaker 02

  A hustler, dude.

• 27:04Speaker 03

  I was hustling.

• 27:05Speaker 02

That's sick. And what, like, I mean, we, we've done, we, you know, we kinda came up the same way through the stand-up comedy world of these horrible gigs, just getting in a car, trying to get there.

• 27:14Speaker 03

  Right.

• 27:14Speaker 02

To go pick up a horrible check, lose money, van hotel.

• 27:17H. Foley?

I was doing it in my forties.

• 27:18Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, we, yeah, we did, we, Steve did it a little later in life. Um, what's a gig like that, you're fifteen, you got the van, you got the team, you get to the show in Atlanta or whatever, what's that pay? Like fifteen hundred, a thousand dollars for everybody, less?

• 27:33Speaker 03

  Five hundred bucks.

• 27:34Speaker 02

  Five hundred bucks.

• 27:35Speaker 03

I remember like, we would show up and the deal would be like seventy-five a man. And then we'd show up, uh, so it's three hundred dollars.

• 27:43Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 27:44Speaker 03

For a four-piece band. And we showed up, our keyboard player couldn't make it one night, and, you know, the dude gave us seventy-five bucks each, and I was like, no, no, no, the deal was three hundred. And he's like, no, it's seventy-five a man.

• 27:55Speaker 02

  You're a man short.

• 27:56Speaker 03

And I was like, what the hell? So we would, we would work the hell out of the tip jar, you know, I got really good at like working that tip jar. That was kind of my shtick for a while.

• 28:04Speaker 02

Did you have any good, what was like their best, did you have like a good line?

• 28:07Speaker 03

I would try to do the tip jar games, you know?

• 28:09Speaker 02

  What's that?

• 28:10Speaker 03

If you can try to make it into this bucket and like get them really going.

• 28:13Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 28:13Speaker 03

And then some drunk guy would come up, be like, it's gotta be a 20, nothing lower than a 20. If you can make it in the bucket, then you get the whole bag, you know? That whole thing? And then I would move the bucket and it would be funny. And then everybody'd laugh, but like one guy tried to fight me about it.

• 28:27Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 28:27H. Foley?

That's like when you were a kid?

• 28:29Speaker 03

Yeah, I gave him his 20 back.

• 28:30Speaker 02

  20 is 20, dude.

• 28:32Speaker 03

I was like, here you go, don't worry about it. It's supposed to be a joke, cause we want you to tip the band.

• 28:37Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah, we're having a fight, it's a good time, we're not here to fight each other.

• 28:40Speaker 03

At the end of the day, you should tip the band anyway, but I understand, I'm sorry. But, um, I mean, there were multiple, like, just close calls like that, just gigs where they didn't want to pay us. And my grandfather's advice to me was, well, if they do that, man, you just gotta start taking their shit. And I was like, okay.

• 28:59H. Foley?

Like salt and pepper shakers or something like that?

• 29:01Speaker 02

Take their fucking PA system or whatever, yeah.

• 29:02Speaker 03

He said, take anything that ain't bolted down.

• 29:06Speaker 03

And when they ask you why you're doing it, so we gotta get paid, I'm gonna sell this shit. So that was kind of, I did that one night in Spartanburg.

• 29:11H. Foley?

You got a pizza oven in the Town and Country?

• 29:15Speaker 02

  What'd you take?

• 29:16H. Foley?

  Deal's a deal, Randy!

• 29:17Speaker 03

I mean, it was a total bluff because I can't fit all this in the Town and Country.

• 29:23Speaker 02

I was gonna have to leave it, I was gonna have to leave the bases there.

• 29:25H. Foley?

You had two waitresses in there?

• 29:27Speaker 03

We'd been playing all night and like, the agreement was for us to play until 12. And they said, no, you play till 1. I was like, there's nobody here and the agreement, our email says 12, so we're getting out of here. And they said, well, we're not fucking paying you. And I said, well, we're gonna have to take all your shit. So we started loading their stuff out and out of nowhere, these big burly guys showed up. And it was at the back entrance of the club is where you load in and load out. And on the other side of the fence was like a police dispatch unit. So everybody just standing outside of the dispatch unit smoking cigarettes. So out of nowhere, like six cops pull up, there was like this brawl happening in the street.

• 30:03H. Foley?

  Jeez, no kidding?

• 30:04Speaker 03

My drummer at the time, he, he, uh, some guy jumped on his back and broke his ankle.

• 30:09H. Foley?

  Oh no.

• 30:10Speaker 03

  It was a whole thing.

• 30:11H. Foley?

How old are you when this is going on?

• 30:13Speaker 02

  This is crazy.

• 30:14Speaker 03

  16.

• 30:16Speaker 03

I caused a bar, a bar brawl, but, uh, they paid us.

• 30:20Speaker 02

Good, I mean, you got your money. What's uh, what would you, what would the most you'd like you'd make your, what would be a good night from the bucket, the tip bucket?

• 30:28Speaker 03

Good night from the tip bucket would be like 200 bucks.

• 30:30Speaker 02

That's pretty, you know, I mean, that's good.

• 30:32Speaker 03

Two, three hundred bucks. And when we play this bar in Asheville, North Carolina, um, the deal with every band was like, you get a case of PBR. And I knew that. And I'd tell them, you know, hey, I, I understand the circumstances, but I still want that case of PBR. So they'd give it to me on the back steps like a cat, like a stray cat. I would leave and then come back and just have a case of beer on the bottom step for me.

• 30:57Speaker 02

It's like you're dropping a briefcase full of fucking secret documents.

• 30:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:00H. Foley?

I think you're gonna have to switch it out with chocolate milk or something like that.

• 31:03Speaker 02

I want my code red now.

• 31:05Speaker 03

Well, I, I definitely started drinking at that point, so.

• 31:08H. Foley?

  Nice, PBRs.

• 31:11Speaker 03

What are you gonna do, you play dick to your Jesus?

• 31:13Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's tough. I mean.

• 31:15Speaker 03

  That's nuts.

• 31:16Speaker 02

We, I mean, I, it's tough for us not to drink, you know, we're, you know, similar thing at night, you're in clubs and everything and it's just like, it's tough. It's tough as an adult not to drink, let alone like a kid with no experience or think you're gonna get into it.

• 31:28H. Foley?

When you were a kid and you were at home and say your dad had an off night, would you guys sit down and have dinner together? And would your grandparents usually be involved in that?

• 31:35Speaker 03

Usually at my grandparents' house. My grandmother would cook, um, grandfather head of the table, my dad, me and my sister and my, and my grandma.

• 31:43H. Foley?

So for the most part, like groceries and stuff like that, your grandmother was doing that?

• 31:47Speaker 03

Yeah, I'd say until like I was 11 or so.

• 31:50H. Foley?

What would normally be in the fridge as a kid, your dad is a musician, single dad is a musician, what are we talking about?

• 31:58Speaker 03

So, I mean, my grandmother was really good at like making a grocery list last all week. You know, get ground beef and she would make, um, spaghetti, but it was, it was more like a skyline chili kind of thing.

• 32:11Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 32:11Speaker 03

So she would make the chili for that and then the next day it would be hot dogs, same chili.

• 32:16Speaker 02

I don't hate that. I'm all about it.

• 32:18Speaker 03

And the next day, like leftover chopped up hot dogs with just buttered noodles, that kind of thing.

• 32:24H. Foley?

  Alright.

• 32:24Speaker 02

You're speaking my language, dude. I like it. Uh, okay. And what would like a family vacation look like growing up?

• 32:30H. Foley?

  Would you do anything?

• 32:31Speaker 02

Or just travel for work or what was the?

• 32:33Speaker 03

Once a year, we would make the pilgrimage down to Charleston, South Carolina.

• 32:39Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 32:39Speaker 03

Occasionally change it up with Myrtle Beach, throw a little flair.

• 32:43Speaker 02

Big fan of Myrtle Beach myself.

• 32:44H. Foley?

  Big fan of Charleston.

• 32:45Speaker 03

Yeah, great. We'd go down, we'd get one motel room. Uh grandparents in one bed. It's the only time they would share a bed. Uh otherwise they would separate bedrooms.

• 32:55H. Foley?

  No kidding.

• 32:56Speaker 03

  So.

• 32:56H. Foley?

It's such an old school thing.

• 32:57Speaker 03

Yeah, me and my dad and my sister.

• 32:59H. Foley?

  They had different rooms.

• 33:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 33:00H. Foley?

I couldn't get my head around that. I'm like, wait, you sleep here? You sleep here? How the fuck did everybody get here?

• 33:04Speaker 03

Right, exactly. I couldn't, I couldn't figure it out either. But they were the same way.

• 33:09H. Foley?

  Huh.

• 33:09Speaker 03

So, once a year we'd go down to Charleston for a weekend. Uh, one motel room. We'd go to one nice dinner.

• 33:15Speaker 02

Mm-hmm. Stand, standard American, uh, standard American vacation.

• 33:19H. Foley?

So financially, growing up, things weren't great?

• 33:23Speaker 03

I mean, they were tight, but like, we didn't want for a lot, you know? We, we did okay.

• 33:29H. Foley?

And the hot dogs and noodles.

• 33:30Speaker 02

That's, that's got like chili going.

• 33:32Speaker 03

But I look back and I think about like, I don't think there were that many roaming blackouts. I think the bills just didn't get paid in that month.

• 33:40Speaker 03

  And we'd have our camp.

• 33:41Speaker 02

  Another blackout.

• 33:41Speaker 03

We'd have our campouts and my dad'd be like, this is crazy, this is crazy.

• 33:46Speaker 02

Goddamn Enron pulling the plug on the, on the eastern seaboard.

• 33:51Speaker 02

I didn't think there was that many rolling blackouts. The neighbors' lights are on.

• 33:55H. Foley?

  Screaming about Obama.

• 33:57Speaker 02

  They're on a different grid.

• 34:00Speaker 02

That's, that's, rolling blackouts, the whole neighborhood's lit up. This is a target, this is, this is targeted bullshit.

• 34:07H. Foley?

What about Christmas? What were holidays like?

• 34:09Speaker 03

Oh, man. They were so great.

• 34:12H. Foley?

  Would you do a tree?

• 34:13Speaker 03

  Yeah, we'd do a tree.

• 34:14Speaker 02

  Fake or real?

• 34:15Speaker 03

  Grandma had a fake tree.

• 34:16H. Foley?

  Colored lights, white lights?

• 34:18Speaker 03

White lights at grandma's house, uh, colored lights at my house.

• 34:21H. Foley?

Would your dad get a fake tree? Did your dad have a fake tree too?

• 34:23Speaker 03

My dad would do a real tree, up until the time I was 11, and that's when we moved down to my stepmom's house. And she was very, fake tree, white lights, no bullshit.

• 34:32H. Foley?

  So your dad got remarried?

• 34:34Speaker 03

  My dad got remarried.

• 34:34H. Foley?

Alright, cool, okay. Did she have any kids?

• 34:37Speaker 03

She did. Um, it's actually, one of their birthday today, and they were a lot older than me.

• 34:42H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 34:42Speaker 03

I was 11 and her youngest son was 17.

• 34:45Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 34:45Speaker 03

  The oldest was 21, so.

• 34:47Speaker 02

  Not super close.

• 34:48Speaker 03

It wasn't, it wasn't a great situation. And they, and they both were pretty troubled youths and, uh, she had a real hard time with them.

• 34:57Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 34:57Speaker 03

It kinda made it difficult for her to, you know, focus on me and my sister.

• 35:02Speaker 02

  A hundred percent.

• 35:03Speaker 03

And we really kinda needed that at the time, so it was kind of a rough situation for a while. But now we're very close.

• 35:09Speaker 02

  That's great.

• 35:09Speaker 03

And, uh, they've been married now 20 years.

• 35:13H. Foley?

  Man, that's, that's crazy.

• 35:15Speaker 02

What a. What a story and what a guy to tell the story. He is fucking good. I forget we're doing a show. I'm just like, what else? I'm picturing it. I got the house. I got his grandparents out. I got the two trees going. That Skyline Chili, I can't get off my brain.

• 35:31H. Foley?

What toys did you play with when you were a kid?

• 35:33Speaker 02

Les Paul. What are you talking about?

• 35:35H. Foley?

  I know.

• 35:36Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:36H. Foley?

  Really?

• 35:37Speaker 03

When it wasn't Les Paul, it was wrestlers.

• 35:39H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 35:39Speaker 03

  G.I. Joes.

• 35:40H. Foley?

  G.I. Joes, alright.

• 35:41Speaker 03

Yeah, but I would have my G.I. Joes set up and they had like these little-

• 35:45Speaker 02

  They're backing them up?

• 35:45Speaker 03

These little guitar figurines, yeah. I would set them up to play like in a band.

• 35:52H. Foley?

  You got Destro back there?

• 35:53Speaker 02

Uh, I have so many, so many questions.

• 35:58H. Foley?

Cobra Commander on the keys, just giving you that thing?

• 36:01Speaker 02

  He's doing the-

• 36:03H. Foley?

  Jesus, that's-

• 36:04Speaker 02

Uh, what was the first, you know, when did you start making like, pretty good cash? And was there a kind of a dumb purchase where you're like, I didn't need that pontoon?

• 36:15H. Foley?

  The first big check.

• 36:16Speaker 02

  You know?

• 36:17Speaker 03

Oh, wow. Um, I mean, I think the first big check is when I, I was always pretty rational with my spending, I think. I got that from my, my grandpa.

• 36:27H. Foley?

And when you said, like, when you were like 14, 15 and 16 doing these gigs, would you have to go home and give the money to your dad? Or like, would you keep it all to yourself?

• 36:36Speaker 03

I was, I remember I would help my, my mother out a little bit.

• 36:39H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 36:39Speaker 03

She was back in my life at that point. And I'd go down-

• 36:42Speaker 02

  14, 15?

• 36:43Speaker 03

Yeah, I'd go down and try to help out a little bit.

• 36:45Speaker 02

  Damn.

• 36:46Speaker 03

And then I'd come back and like the lights would be out and she'd have like a carton of cigarettes and like-

• 36:51Speaker 02

Which, I've had to make that decision before myself.

• 36:54H. Foley?

  Yeah, no kidding.

• 36:54Speaker 03

And she told me later, she was like, "Yeah, you know, what you were bringing in wasn't really gonna make a difference." And I was like, "Fair enough, fair enough. Hey."

• 37:03Speaker 02

What was, what was her brand of smokes?

• 37:05Speaker 03

  She was Marlboro Lights.

• 37:06H. Foley?

  Nice.

• 37:07Speaker 03

Marlboro Lights, I mean, a mom smoking Marlboro Lights in the car with the windows up, that is just-

• 37:12Speaker 02

That's my, that's my stepmom, but yeah.

• 37:14Speaker 03

  Prime time, baby.

• 37:14Speaker 02

We were in a purple Dodge Intrepid.

• 37:16Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:17Speaker 02

  Cooking.

• 37:17H. Foley?

I was like, we were in an old Jeep Wagoneer. I remember it was freezing outside. The windows were up, the heat was on. I'm like, this, I was like six. This can't be good.

• 37:25Speaker 02

  This can't be good.

• 37:26H. Foley?

This can't be good. It smells great though. You got a little bit of Aqua Net, you know, you got the radio on. Fond memories, but probably not good for the esophagus.

• 37:35Speaker 02

  No, it is not. Oh.

• 37:37H. Foley?

  All right.

• 37:38Speaker 02

Okay. What was, uh, one, yeah, sorry.

• 37:40Speaker 03

The first big purchase, I guess.

• 37:41Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 37:42H. Foley?

And like, what did that look like?

• 37:43Speaker 03

  Well.

• 37:45H. Foley?

Did you get the, you got discovered online, right?

• 37:47Speaker 03

  Sort of kinda, yeah.

• 37:48H. Foley?

  Right?

• 37:48Speaker 03

We were, we were really just kinda out there beating the streets, man.

• 37:51Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 37:52Speaker 03

We were playing, um, 200 nights a year. We'd go anywhere that somebody would have us.

• 37:57H. Foley?

Still with the same, same guys, kinda?

• 37:59Speaker 03

Yeah, me and my drummer. Yeah, I met him when I was 17 and we've been together ever since.

• 38:04H. Foley?

  How old is he?

• 38:05Speaker 03

Uh, I think he was 19 or 20.

• 38:07H. Foley?

Okay, so a little bit younger. So you're not still with the 40's and 50-year-old guys?

• 38:10Speaker 03

No, they all, you know, uh, uh, they didn't wanna leave town.

• 38:14Speaker 02

Yeah, they can't, yeah, they can't.

• 38:15Speaker 03

  They had wives and kids.

• 38:16H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 38:17Speaker 03

And they couldn't go on the road for what I was able to pay.

• 38:19Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:20Speaker 03

And we were sharing a motel room, which I was accustomed to.

• 38:23H. Foley?

And that all falls on you, what you're able to pay?

• 38:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:25H. Foley?

  Huh.

• 38:26Speaker 03

You know, you go out and whatever the club's willing to pay you.

• 38:29H. Foley?

  Right.

• 38:30Speaker 03

So we would drive like, straight to Paragold, Arkansas and play for like, 500 bucks and some pork steaks.

• 38:36H. Foley?

  You and the drummer?

• 38:36Speaker 03

Yeah, me and the drummer, bass player, keyboard player.

• 38:39H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 38:39Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:40Speaker 02

500 bucks, plus maybe passing the bucket around.

• 38:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, pass the bucket around.

• 38:44Speaker 02

  Say you're 600 bucks.

• 38:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 38:45Speaker 02

Four guys, plus the, plus the steaks.

• 38:48H. Foley?

Okay, we gotta talk about Rocket Money.

• 38:49Speaker 02

• 39:18H. Foley?

I just got bamboozled by somebody.

• 39:20Speaker 02

  Back to the show.

• 40:01Speaker 00

Witness the beginning of the revolution.

• 40:04Speaker 04

Hey Mitch, you've been trying to take down these games from the start.

• 40:07Speaker 00

  Film for IMAX.

• 40:08Speaker 04

  Make them remember you.

• 40:11Speaker 00

The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Leaping, November 20th, made in PD13.

• 40:14H. Foley?

Now, is this the nexus of the Marcus King Band, kinda like, this is, this is the squad?

• 40:19Speaker 03

Yeah, and we had this guy, this guy Robbie, who was tight with like a lot of reggae bands.

• 40:25H. Foley?

  Uh huh.

• 40:25Speaker 03

And he knew this guy who was the brother of a bass player from this reggae band called The Movement. And Larry, uh, his mother had this crazy bu- payout from this insurance claim because she took some-

• 40:40Speaker 02

There's always a payout involved in every dirtbag, every dirtbag origin story. Someone got hit by a bus, someone they left a sponging or something.

• 40:48H. Foley?

The ones with that air conditioner.

• 40:49Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, golly, she like, she took a vaccine or something and she ended up like paralyzed or something, God bless her, but, I mean, I never knew her, but they had this crazy big mansion outside of San Diego and, uh, they had all the G-Love and Special Sauce's road gear and they were recording in there. So, this fellow that we knew in, in Greenville named Bill Hahn, who's just the best, just Bud Light all day kinda guy.

• 41:15Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 41:16Speaker 03

And he's so fucking hilarious, shout out Bill, um, he was like, "I'll fly you guys out there, man, you guys make a record, it'd be great." I was like, "Okay."

• 41:23Speaker 02

  Oh, G-Love's gear.

• 41:25Speaker 03

Yeah, so we flew out to San Diego, we made a record, um, and the engineer on that record was this girl and like, her and I ended up just really kinda falling for each other. I was 18, she was 28. We started dating, we dated for like four years, so I'd go out there and see her as much as I could, and her sister lived in LA, so she took me up to LA and we went out to Tarzana one day to Norman's Rare Guitars.

• 41:49Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 41:50Speaker 03

And she was like, "This is how LA works, you gotta just play and they'll discover you." And I was like, "I don't know." So I played and they, they liked what I was doing and they said, "Can we film you for our YouTube channel?" I'd never heard of such a thing, you know, so they did and then that just-

• 42:05H. Foley?

  Of a YouTube channel?

• 42:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:06H. Foley?

  Really?

• 42:07Speaker 03

Well, I mean, I'd never heard of like, a guitar store filming somebody for-

• 42:11H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 42:11Speaker 03

I was like, "Sure, why not?" So I did that and they, it went like viral, you know? I'd say, well, just like the first thing I did that was viral, and then that just kinda made the rounds. That was kinda the first thing that really picked up steam.

• 42:23H. Foley?

  Damn. Sick. The whole thing.

• 42:27Speaker 02

It's so funny because like every comedian wanted to be a rock star at some point in our lives. And like, I can't do that, but I can, you know, I can call this guy dumb or whatever.

• 42:37H. Foley?

And the girl you fell for was 10 years older and she was the engineer.

• 42:40Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:41H. Foley?

  Man, that's hot.

• 42:42Speaker 03

  She was rad.

• 42:44H. Foley?

That's awesome. And then how did it unfold from there?

• 42:47Speaker 02

Oh, I'm sorry. What was the purchase? Did we ever get to the purchase?

• 42:49Speaker 03

Oh, the purchase was probably my Cadillac. It was like.

• 42:53H. Foley?

  What was the check for?

• 42:55Speaker 03

Uh, I think it might have been from my label or something like an advance check.

• 43:00H. Foley?

Ooh, that's how they get you.

• 43:01Speaker 03

Yeah, that's how they get you.

• 43:02Speaker 02

That advance, oh, that's, I don't know much about the record industry, but that advance will come back to bite you in the end.

• 43:06H. Foley?

I like how you said you were always pretty good with the money. The first thing you'd do with the engineer is go get a caddy.

• 43:12Speaker 03

It was a 1980 El Dorado.

• 43:15H. Foley?

It's got the horns on it in the front.

• 43:17Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 43:18H. Foley?

  Really?

• 43:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:19H. Foley?

  Oh, my God, dude.

• 43:21Speaker 02

  What color was it?

• 43:22Speaker 03

It was black. Black and red pens.

• 43:24Speaker 02

That is it. That if there's, if there's, if anybody's meant to drive that car, it is 100% yellow.

• 43:29H. Foley?

And where's that, where was, where would that be parked? Where were you based out of?

• 43:32Speaker 03

  Man, I was in Nashville.

• 43:34H. Foley?

Okay, so you moved to Nashville at this point?

• 43:36Speaker 03

  Moved to Nashville.

• 43:36H. Foley?

  Drummer goes with you?

• 43:38Speaker 03

  Drummer stayed in Greenville.

• 43:39H. Foley?

  Stayed in Greenville?

• 43:40Speaker 03

Which I'm still trying to get him to move to Nashville.

• 43:43H. Foley?

  But he's with you?

• 43:44Speaker 03

  Yeah, he's still with me.

• 43:44Speaker 02

But he's just, he's based out of there. He's at his home.

• 43:47Speaker 03

He just commutes. He just likes living in Greenville. Uh, his wife and her family are there and they just had a little baby. So he's, he's got deep roots in Greenville. So he just commutes. He doesn't mind doing it. Um, I mean, it'd be easier on everybody if he was in Nashville, but, you know, maybe someday.

• 44:04Speaker 02

  It is what it is.

• 44:05H. Foley?

  Yeah, all good.

• 44:05Speaker 03

But the, the caddy would be parked outside. I was renting a house for 1,500 bucks a month, me and my girlfriend at the time. And, um, you know, that was, that was the biggest thing was like. My grandfather kinda taught me about these pneumatic devices, you know, to make people really remember you, make them stick, you know? Like, big cowboy hat, you know, big belt buckle.

• 44:27H. Foley?

  Sure.

• 44:28Speaker 03

Shiny boots, whatever it was, um, and the Cadillac was part of that.

• 44:32H. Foley?

  Mm-hmm.

• 44:33Speaker 02

  A statement.

• 44:33Speaker 03

I was like, if I'm somewhere, if I'm recording at a studio, if I'm working on somebody's record, they're gonna know I'm in there, cause this car's parked out front, you know? I was the only guy driving around in this Eldorado.

• 44:43H. Foley?

  How old are you?

• 44:44Speaker 03

At this time, I was probably like, 21, 22.

• 44:47Speaker 02

Now, was this, that's so sick, dude. Was this like, uh, was it like, completely, fully restored, or was it beat up? Like, what was the condition of it? Did you buy it like, fully redone, or in mint condition?

• 44:59Speaker 03

  It was in Middletown, Pennsylvania.

• 45:01Speaker 02

  No shit?

• 45:02Speaker 03

And I found it online. It was, uh, $3,000.

• 45:06H. Foley?

  Alright.

• 45:07Speaker 03

And it had like, I think, 30,000 miles on it.

• 45:10H. Foley?

What was the advance? Can we ask you that?

• 45:12Speaker 03

  The advance, I can't, I can't remember, it wasn't anything too special.

• 45:15H. Foley?

  Under 10 grand?

• 45:16Speaker 03

No, I think it might've been more than that.

• 45:18H. Foley?

  Alright.

• 45:19Speaker 03

But, again, that's how they get you.

• 45:20H. Foley?

That's how they get you. Damn.

• 45:22Speaker 03

  Huh.

• 45:23H. Foley?

  That's how Kippee got me.

• 45:25Speaker 02

That's how you're still paying it off. Dang.

• 45:29H. Foley?

I got a show in Greenville tonight. Matter of fact.

• 45:33Speaker 02

Pays pork steaks, and I get 10%.

• 45:35H. Foley?

Yeah, what's a pork steak? I went right over that. What's a pork steak?

• 45:39Speaker 03

What's a pork steak? Uh, it was just this big cut of meat, dude.

• 45:42Speaker 02

I'm with you. You had my interest, and now you have my attention. Oh man, he's got a great laugh, too.

• 45:51Speaker 03

  Oh, it was great.

• 45:52H. Foley?

  Alright.

• 45:53Speaker 03

Jesus. Yeah, we had a good time. Those pork steaks, they, they sent us home with some, and they made this huge stain in our van that just never went away. Massive.

• 46:04Speaker 02

So you're, at that point, you're still in the town and country?

• 46:07Speaker 03

This was our, uh, we had a Ford Econoline, we got a great deal on, 2014.

• 46:11Speaker 02

The rose in it, right? It's like the church van, kinda.

• 46:14Speaker 03

  Exactly.

• 46:15H. Foley?

Do we have a manager at this point? Someone handling all this stuff?

• 46:17Speaker 03

I think at this point, we did have a manager. My first manager was, uh, a lady named Steph, and it was Warren Haynes' wife. So Warren Haynes from the Allman Brothers Band, Government Mule, and, uh...

• 46:29Speaker 02

  No kidding?

• 46:30Speaker 03

Yeah, he kinda took a, took a chance on us, and was producing a record for us, and, um, you know...

• 46:38Speaker 03

Steph and myself, we ended up having a falling out. It just wasn't really working.

• 46:42H. Foley?

  Mm-hmm.

• 46:42Speaker 03

And, uh, you know, that relationship really never got mended back together, but, you know, I still love them very much, but, uh...

• 46:51H. Foley?

Man, how cool is this? It's like, we're, we're, we're watching the, the biopic right in front of us.

• 46:55Speaker 02

  I know.

• 46:56H. Foley?

  It's insane.

• 46:56Speaker 02

It's crazy, dude. I'm so enamored by it.

• 46:59H. Foley?

I know, it's crazy. Alright, so you, you go through that with the manager.

• 47:06H. Foley?

When, when do you get the check where you're like, "Oh shit"?

• 47:09Speaker 02

When are you kinda like, not set, but you're like, "Alright, I'm, I'm... You, you got some wiggle room."

• 47:16Speaker 03

Right. I'd say like, pre-pandemic, um, like 2020.

• 47:22Speaker 02

2020, 'cause your album, it was like, your, what, your first album was when? 2018?

• 47:27Speaker 03

Yeah, well, first album was 2014.

• 47:30Speaker 02

  2014.

• 47:30Speaker 03

  And...

• 47:31H. Foley?

  The Grammy was 2020.

• 47:33Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:33H. Foley?

  Right?

• 47:33Speaker 03

  So around then...

• 47:34Speaker 02

  That's when really...

• 47:35Speaker 03

Yeah, I had a little juice and, um, I had enough saved up, I was able to buy a house.

• 47:40Speaker 02

  Great.

• 47:41Speaker 03

  You know?

• 47:41H. Foley?

  Bought a house in Nashville?

• 47:42Speaker 03

I have a down payment. I was in Mount Juliet.

• 47:44H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 47:45Speaker 03

So right outside of Nashville. And, um, you know, and then the shit hit the fan with the pandemic, but we were still able to, you know, keep everybody on for like nine months.

• 47:57Speaker 02

  It's great, man.

• 47:58Speaker 03

You know, we got a little bit of that government cheese.

• 48:00H. Foley?

  Mm-hmm.

• 48:01Speaker 03

We were just scraping by, man.

• 48:03Speaker 02

  For sure.

• 48:03Speaker 03

  It was rough times.

• 48:04Speaker 02

We were doing the same thing, dude. Huh, okay.

• 48:08H. Foley?

  And now you're killing it.

• 48:10Speaker 03

  Things are good.

• 48:13H. Foley?

Any kinda cheese I want now.

• 48:16Speaker 03

I mean, you know, hell, like even, like I said, that's how they get you, you know, and I've, I've, uh, been through a number of those.

• 48:25Speaker 02

  A number of those situations.

• 48:27Speaker 03

And just had to claw my way out of them, you know?

• 48:30Speaker 02

  Fuck, I love that.

• 48:31Speaker 03

There's only, only one way through it is to do it.

• 48:32Speaker 02

Mm-hmm. Um, how many, uh, you know, okay, typically, you know, you're, you're such a man of, of cool. What if I, this is how,

• 48:41H. Foley?

  Pretty cool dude.

• 48:41Speaker 02

This is how dorky I am. You're a man of cool. He's got me slipping out of my seat over here. About to take a run at the guy. Uh, I'm trying, this is how, this is how much of a dork I am. I'm trying to read the label on that shirt so I can buy it when he leaves.

• 48:57Speaker 02

And I can't make it out. I'm like, that doesn't look like Levi's. And I'm like, I'm literally going, can I sell that to my wife or is that too western?

• 49:04Speaker 03

  Carhartt.

• 49:05Speaker 02

  It's a car, I'm a Carhartt man. Everybody, I'm a Dicky's and Carhartt man. Everybody knows that.

• 49:09Speaker 03

You gotta, you gotta get the vintage Carhartt though.

• 49:11Speaker 02

  Vintage Carhartt.

• 49:11Speaker 03

Cause then it's worn in right.

• 49:13Speaker 02

Damn. Uh, okay. How many guitars do you own?

• 49:16Speaker 03

Way too many, man. It's gotta be like seventy plus.

• 49:21Speaker 02

  Seventy?

• 49:22H. Foley?

No kidding. You play them all?

• 49:24Speaker 03

I do. Yeah. I mean, like my studio, I've got a lot of guitars there. I've got a lot that were gifts, guitars that, you know, it's, they're kind of, you know, I'm, I'm really OCD, so I've got them like in different places. Like the ones really special to me are, you know, kept very close and the other ones, a lot of them are like in storage. Or, you know, I have like Flight Eight guitars, guitars that I'll check under the plane and guitars that I'll leave overseas, you know?

• 49:54H. Foley?

  Leave overseas?

• 49:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:56Speaker 02

So like when you're going, you don't have to travel with them?

• 49:57Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 49:58H. Foley?

  Where do you leave that?

• 49:58Speaker 02

That's fuck, that's like what assassins do with guns.

• 50:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:02Speaker 02

  That's what-

• 50:02H. Foley?

  No shit.

• 50:03Speaker 02

That's what John Wick does. He goes and checks in at the Citadel or whatever.

• 50:07H. Foley?

  Citadel.

• 50:09Speaker 02

I'm an idiot. I don't know if you've picked up on that.

• 50:11H. Foley?

  The Continental.

• 50:12Speaker 02

Continental. Citadel's the one in, in Europe.

• 50:15Speaker 03

The Citadel was a big part of our origin really because Bill Hahn, who I told you about, Bud Light all day, the man. Bill went to the Citadel with a, a rider, uh, Jameson Clark. And Jameson Clark was in Nashville and he gave our demo to our agent, Braden Roundtree, who's still my agent today. So like, had that not happened, you know, cause you gotta really get an in.

• 50:41Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 50:41Speaker 03

This was at William Morris Agency and-

• 50:44H. Foley?

  Shout out to him.

• 50:44Speaker 03

  Shout out to William Morris.

• 50:45Speaker 02

  It's our boys.

• 50:46Speaker 03

And my great grandfather's name was William Morris King. Or my grandfather's name. Yeah.

• 50:50Speaker 02

  No shit.

• 50:51Speaker 03

So we went up there and got like ripped, like we got shit hammered and then went into that meeting like the next morning. Uh, this is when I'm like eighteen.

• 51:01Speaker 02

  Rock stars.

• 51:02Speaker 03

And they didn't give us a meeting upstairs, but he met with us in the lobby and-

• 51:07H. Foley?

  Yeah, we just had that.

• 51:09Speaker 02

We were just also not letting the main premises.

• 51:13Speaker 03

First gig Braden ever booked for us was at SeaWorld.

• 51:18Speaker 02

  No way.

• 51:19Speaker 03

  In Orlando, yeah.

• 51:20Speaker 02

Was it like you guys were just playing and people were walking by type thing? Like you were just like, just the band, cover band?

• 51:26Speaker 03

In between Shamu, like weird play. It was, it was the worst.

• 51:31H. Foley?

How was the check on that?

• 51:33Speaker 03

Check wasn't bad. It was worth, it was worth driving to Orlando for.

• 51:35H. Foley?

Sure. So you got your own studio now? Is this at the house?

• 51:41Speaker 03

No, it's, it's actually, it's my old place. And it's, you know.

• 51:45H. Foley?

The old house that you bought with, you put the down payment on?

• 51:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 51:48H. Foley?

Turned that into a studio. Now you got the new place.

• 51:50Speaker 03

Now I got a new place, me and my wife.

• 51:52H. Foley?

  Good spot?

• 51:53Speaker 03

It's a good spot. We're in, we're in the good part of town now.

• 51:55H. Foley?

No kidding? You got a pool?

• 51:57Speaker 03

No, the old place has a pool though, like this in, an indoor pool.

• 52:01H. Foley?

  An indoor pool?

• 52:02Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's like this.

• 52:03H. Foley?

  What was this down payment?

• 52:07H. Foley?

You made it sound like you were scraping like fifteen hundred bucks together.

• 52:09Speaker 03

I got a, I got a great deal on the place.

• 52:11H. Foley?

  No kidding?

• 52:12Speaker 03

  And this was in 2020.

• 52:15Speaker 03

  And this is before.

• 52:16H. Foley?

  Kind of hickory chip.

• 52:17Speaker 02

Yep. Coolest dude I've ever met. What are you talking about?

• 52:19H. Foley?

  No way you're twenty.

• 52:21Speaker 02

  I know.

• 52:23H. Foley?

You gotta be like three hundred.

• 52:24Speaker 02

Dude, I literally remember walking into that, when we were trying to go to that pop-up show, I walked in and he was saying something super cool on the, on the mic, like between songs.

• 52:31H. Foley?

  Burgess!

• 52:33Speaker 02

And some guy leaned over next to me and went, "Oh, what's up? I love R U garbage." I'm like, "This is the coolest night of my life." And then the bouncer's like, "You gotta go." "All right, man, I'll see you later."

• 52:42Speaker 03

  Oh, man.

• 52:43Speaker 02

I was so close. I'm like, "I'm in. This is the, I'm like, I'm seeing the coolest fucking guy. I'm getting recognized." And then the guy's like, "Yeah, your buddies aren't allowed in." I was like, "The big one can't, the big one, the big guy can't come in?"

• 52:55H. Foley?

  He ain't gonna fit.

• 52:56Speaker 03

I hated so much that that happened.

• 52:58H. Foley?

No, we're joking. We're teasing you.

• 53:00Speaker 02

And it wasn't you. It was, it was Gillis. Gillis was like, "Yeah, come on by." He had two passes and he invited like thirty-five people.

• 53:07Speaker 03

  We'll get you next time.

• 53:08H. Foley?

  Shout out to Gilli.

• 53:09Speaker 02

  For sure.

• 53:10H. Foley?

  Ah, that's funny.

• 53:11Speaker 02

  Sick. Okay, huh.

• 53:13H. Foley?

So you got the studio. You got the house.

• 53:14Speaker 02

Okay, what's like a day, right? You're not, just say you're like in between, are you, so you're like heavy touring, you had mentioned?

• 53:20Speaker 03

  Yeah, we tour a lot.

• 53:21Speaker 02

What's like, I guess like that's just the musicians. You're just, are you, you guys are like forever on the road, right? Is there a break coming up in 2026 you're looking at?

• 53:30Speaker 03

I mean, you know, like, so like this last year, I had like a, had a manager, you know, screw me over pretty bad. Business manager. It was just kind of this perfect storm. Business manager not saying no enough, manager being inept, everything just kind of creating this perfect storm of fuck that just like really slammed at my front door. So the way that I was raised is like, we gotta get through this, you know? So I was like, say yes to everything. I'm doing every private gig. I'm gonna be on the road. You know, and me and my wife both agreed, like, we don't have kids or anything yet, so I've just been hustling my ass off, just trying to.

• 54:14Speaker 02

  Work through it.

• 54:15Speaker 03

Yeah, and also trying to be creative and put out a record and trying to have some catharsis. So like in that time, like, you know, I sold a guitar and I bought a Karmen Ghia. So when I'm home, that's kind of what I do is zip around in my Karmen Ghia.

• 54:31H. Foley?

  What's a Karmen Ghia?

• 54:32Speaker 03

It's a car Volkswagen made it, but it was.

• 54:35Speaker 02

  How do you spell it?

• 54:36H. Foley?

  You sold a guitar?

• 54:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 54:39H. Foley?

It was, that was worth as much as a car?

• 54:42Speaker 03

Yeah, but like, you'll see the car, it's like.

• 54:44Speaker 02

How do you spell Karmen Ghia?

• 54:46Speaker 03

  K A R R M A N.

• 54:50H. Foley?

  Started with a G.

• 54:52Speaker 02

Karmen Ghia. I thought it was Karma Ghia. Okay. A little old school guy.

• 54:56Speaker 03

So they call it, they call it the poor man's Porsche.

• 54:58Speaker 02

Yeah. So you sold a guitar?

• 55:02Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:02Speaker 02

And bought that. Was that like a one for one?

• 55:04Speaker 03

  Yeah, pretty, pretty much.

• 55:06Speaker 02

Seems like an expensive guitar, if we're being honest with you. Calling balls and strikes here.

• 55:10Speaker 03

I got a, I got a good deal, you know, it was, it was just kind of something I did off the radar, off the books, because I needed a toy.

• 55:17Speaker 02

Do you have something, some place to put your?

• 55:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:20Speaker 02

  Focus?

• 55:20Speaker 03

Because my, I needed something to tinker with, because I've just been driving myself crazy and like, my Cadillac's been with my uncle down in South Carolina. He's been doing a number on it.

• 55:30H. Foley?

  Driving it around?

• 55:31Speaker 03

  No, no.

• 55:32Speaker 02

  Fixing it.

• 55:32Speaker 03

  He's been fixing her up.

• 55:34Speaker 02

How many cars? Driving around. This is Marcus King's car.

• 55:39H. Foley?

He's got the glasses. He's trying to pretend he's you, he's got the glasses on.

• 55:46Speaker 03

Yeah, he's been fixing it up, but like, you know, he's, he's busy and I'm, I'm like, I'm touring, so like, don't worry about it, you know, no rush, but um.

• 55:55Speaker 02

Huh, what's uh, okay, so you say, this is in, this is in Nashville, this car, you, you wake up, what's like an off day in Nashville looking like for you?

• 56:05Speaker 03

So, me and my wife just like to sit on the porch, I gotta have a cigarette in the morning.

• 56:10Speaker 02

Yeah, you do. What kinda heater's you on?

• 56:12Speaker 03

  Uh, American Spirits.

• 56:13Speaker 02

Okay, I pegged them for an American Spirit guy. What color, yellow?

• 56:16Speaker 03

Uh, these, which are like, light blue.

• 56:19Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 56:20Speaker 03

But, you know, anytime I tell somebody blue American Spirits, they always bring back the wrong ones. But, whatever color blue you would say this is.

• 56:28H. Foley?

They're the only one, American Spirits that I like. The yellow ones, I have something about them, I, I don't know.

• 56:32Speaker 03

  I don't like them either.

• 56:33H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 56:33Speaker 02

  I'm off the heaters.

• 56:34H. Foley?

  They take forever.

• 56:35Speaker 03

Yeah, you guys both quit smoking, right?

• 56:36H. Foley?

  I'm back on it.

• 56:37Speaker 02

  He's back on it.

• 56:43Speaker 02

  Uh, yeah.

• 56:44H. Foley?

I'm not eating, I'm trying to lose weight, so.

• 56:45Speaker 02

I'm, I'm nine months off the heaters.

• 56:46H. Foley?

  One for one.

• 56:47Speaker 03

  Nine months, God bless you.

• 56:48Speaker 02

Maybe a misstep out in LA two weeks ago, don't tell my wife. Uh, okay, alright, so you wake up, heater on the porch, cup of coffee?

• 56:56Speaker 03

  Oh yeah.

• 56:57Speaker 02

Heater and a cup of coffee, taking the day. You setting an alarm, or you just getting up when you get up?

• 57:02Speaker 03

Uh, when I'm home, honestly, man, like, me and my wife, we're like, we're like old folks, man, we go to bed like eight o'clock.

• 57:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, kinda nice sometimes, right?

• 57:10Speaker 03

We get up like six or seven, my wife's got pigeons, she goes out and feeds them, no kidding.

• 57:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's not classy.

• 57:17H. Foley?

Anything monogrammed, anything monogrammed, like is your, is your, is your like?

• 57:21Speaker 02

  Probably everything.

• 57:22H. Foley?

  Your bedspread monogrammed?

• 57:24Speaker 03

  Um.

• 57:24H. Foley?

Does it say like MK on it?

• 57:26Speaker 03

I, I, I recently bought some monogrammed pajamas.

• 57:31Speaker 03

And that was me doing something nice for myself.

• 57:33Speaker 02

  That's good, treat yourself.

• 57:34Speaker 03

But when I got them back, like, you know, they monogrammed them, but like, they stitched it, and it like, they stitched the pocket shut.

• 57:42H. Foley?

Hey, put the heaters in there.

• 57:43Speaker 03

Yeah, I can't put the heaters in my pocket, yeah, so.

• 57:47Speaker 02

Okay, and uh, what's on, you know, what's on the rider?

• 57:51Speaker 03

On the rider in my dressing room?

• 57:52H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 57:53Speaker 03

Um, so it depends on whether my wife's coming or not, when, when my wife is there, she likes a still rosé, she likes a black cherry white clause.

• 58:03Speaker 02

God man, talk about the duality, I want a still rosé, and give me some black cherry white clause, in case I wanna fight tonight.

• 58:10H. Foley?

Something French. Something French or forty-two and a couple of Four Loko's.

• 58:16Speaker 02

What? The old stuff. I wonder what the energy juice still in it.

• 58:20H. Foley?

  A switchblade comb. What?

• 58:21Speaker 03

Yeah. New, old stock. Four Loko's.

• 58:24H. Foley?

  I like that.

• 58:25Speaker 03

  So.

• 58:25H. Foley?

  A still rosé.

• 58:26Speaker 03

And me, I do the, I do the N A Heinekens.

• 58:29Speaker 02

  Cause you're sober, right?

• 58:30Speaker 03

  Yeah, I'm sober.

• 58:31Speaker 02

  Good for you, man.

• 58:31Speaker 03

I smoke, uh, smoke my pot, though. Keeps me sane.

• 58:35H. Foley?

  That was very Greenville.

• 58:36Speaker 02

I know. Smoke my pot. Smoke my pot, as you know. Easy, simple man.

• 58:42Speaker 03

  As you do.

• 58:43Speaker 02

How long you been off the sauce?

• 58:45Speaker 03

Um, this time going like since February.

• 58:49Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 58:49Speaker 03

And before that, it was like a year.

• 58:51Speaker 02

  Good for you, man.

• 58:52Speaker 03

I mean, it's, it's been kinda stop and go, but here, like this last time, I just, I don't have any desire to do it again, you know?

• 58:58Speaker 02

It's good to hear. That's, uh, as someone who also struggles with it.

• 59:01Speaker 03

I just wasn't good at it.

• 59:03H. Foley?

  I'm horrible at it.

• 59:04Speaker 03

I just, I was really into like benders, you know?

• 59:08H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 59:09Speaker 03

And I would go off for a week at a time.

• 59:11Speaker 02

Yeah. What was the, what was your poison? Did you, what was the shot and a beer type guy?

• 59:15Speaker 03

Shot and a beer, that's a good time. But on the road, I would make, we called them MK ultras. And it was, uh,

• 59:22Speaker 02

Okay. This guy, this guy plays for keeps.

• 59:25Speaker 03

  Cause you forget everything.

• 59:26Speaker 02

Keep going. I picked up on that.

• 59:29Speaker 03

So it was a Topo Chico, Grey Goose vodka and grapefruit juice. So it's like a Greyhound, but with some fizz.

• 59:36H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 59:37Speaker 03

  And they go down easy.

• 59:38H. Foley?

  Yeah. And MK Ultra.

• 59:40Speaker 03

Two, two solo cups and just mixing yourself. I would just pound those. And I mean, I could drink a beer in like a second flat.

• 59:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:49Speaker 03

So I would just pound beers and drink those. It was pretty great. But I got into, I got into the other stuff, you know, when I was like eighteen.

• 59:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:57Speaker 03

I remember being at a festival called the Get Down in Pumpkin Town.

• 1:00:01H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 1:00:02Speaker 03

Playing. And, um, you know, I had a set to do and I was just too fucked up to do it. So that's when, you know, the booger sugar came into play.

• 1:00:10Speaker 02

  Straighten you up.

• 1:00:11Speaker 03

Yeah, straightened me out. Played a great set, I think. And then I kinda had to dance with that for.

• 1:00:19Speaker 03

Like seven or eight years, you know? And uh, just, just got pretty, I thought that I could do cocaine in a classy way, you know?

• 1:00:28H. Foley?

  You and me both, brother.

• 1:00:29Speaker 03

Cause I'd seen, I'd seen it done. I'd seen like the classy parties, like people were drinking wine, and they'd have like one little tray and they would just go around. It's like, this is nice.

• 1:00:38H. Foley?

I remember Stevie Nicks saying that she used to, she used to have a, a gram of cocaine in her, in her boot at all times, and just would do little whatevers. I wish you could just do that.

• 1:00:47Speaker 02

You guys know guys can't, alright? It's well documented, you can't.

• 1:00:52Speaker 03

Do y'all know people, cause like, I, I've, I have bandmates that are like this, that can do sober cocaine, like, without even having to drink first.

• 1:01:00Speaker 02

  I've never met anybody that-

• 1:01:01H. Foley?

  I can do that.

• 1:01:02Speaker 03

  That's insane to me.

• 1:01:03H. Foley?

  I can do that.

• 1:01:04Speaker 03

You know, like, I know people that-

• 1:01:06Speaker 02

  It's not a talent show.

• 1:01:08H. Foley?

But I know, I know, I know people that could do it and then put it away for, for like, I'm gonna save the rest of this for tomorrow. Can you do that?

• 1:01:14Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:01:15H. Foley?

  That's insane.

• 1:01:16Speaker 02

Most people that have to stop doing it can't do, like, you know, most people go, I don't do that anymore.

• 1:01:20Speaker 03

I've done that before, but, because I had a meeting the next morning, and I had to carry the buzz the next morning if I was gonna sleep at all. And I have a little head stash-

• 1:01:29H. Foley?

  There you go.

• 1:01:29Speaker 03

Wake up, take one down, and then get me to a meeting.

• 1:01:33Speaker 02

  Tutte scuroski.

• 1:01:34Speaker 03

  Tutte rute.

• 1:01:35H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 1:01:36Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:01:36H. Foley?

  Alright.

• 1:01:37Speaker 02

Alright, alright, man, we just took a deviation in the fucking-

• 1:01:41H. Foley?

So, front porch cup of, front porch cup of coffee and a smoke, okay?

• 1:01:45Speaker 02

  Living that sober life, dawg.

• 1:01:46H. Foley?

  Back to clean living.

• 1:01:47Speaker 03

  We're back on clean living.

• 1:01:48Speaker 02

So, the rider, so your wife will have some, uh, some rosé, and, uh, the black cherry white claws? For you, what's, what's it looking like? You got your, you said your and a-

• 1:01:56H. Foley?

  Any snacks that you like?

• 1:01:57Speaker 03

Uh, what do we, what have we been doing lately? We like, uh-

• 1:02:03H. Foley?

  What's your sweet tooth?

• 1:02:04Speaker 03

Me, man, we love, uh, peanut M&M's.

• 1:02:09Speaker 03

There's always pinning M and Ms around.

• 1:02:11Speaker 02

Talking about Dancing with the Devil.

• 1:02:12H. Foley?

Anything fruity? Are you a Nerds Clusters guy? Have you gotten into them?

• 1:02:15Speaker 03

  Never gotten into those.

• 1:02:16H. Foley?

  Stay away from them.

• 1:02:17Speaker 03

  Sure.

• 1:02:17Speaker 02

If you got a problem with the boogers, you're gonna have a problem with them.

• 1:02:20H. Foley?

  Dude, they're so good.

• 1:02:22Speaker 03

I'm like a rock hash used guy, rock hash used, dark chocolate.

• 1:02:26H. Foley?

Okay, a little sea salt, you like a little sea salt?

• 1:02:29Speaker 03

  Sea salt on the chocolate.

• 1:02:30Speaker 02

Gentlemen. Touch a sea salt, it'll blow your hair back.

• 1:02:32Speaker 03

  Yeah, man.

• 1:02:33H. Foley?

  It's alright.

• 1:02:34Speaker 03

  Stuff's good.

• 1:02:35Speaker 02

Okay, and then so like now that you're, you know, you're not partying, you do the, you do the gig, you're back, you know, you're tour bus that night to the next town, right?

• 1:02:44Speaker 03

Yeah, cigarettes are on the rider, actually.

• 1:02:46Speaker 02

  How, well, how many?

• 1:02:47H. Foley?

  Really?

• 1:02:47Speaker 03

  I just get a pack.

• 1:02:49Speaker 02

So you know there's a pack there, you got a pack in the holster.

• 1:02:51H. Foley?

No kidding? That's pretty smart thinking.

• 1:02:53Speaker 02

  So not, nothing too extravagant?

• 1:02:55Speaker 03

  Nothing too crazy.

• 1:02:56H. Foley?

Do you like a nice dinner? You like going out and having a nice dinner?

• 1:02:59Speaker 03

  Love a good steak dinner.

• 1:03:00H. Foley?

  Good steak dinner?

• 1:03:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:03:01H. Foley?

  You a baked potato man?

• 1:03:03Speaker 03

Baked potato man, like a twice baked.

• 1:03:06Speaker 03

You know, we love like a St. Elmo's in Indianapolis, that kind of thing.

• 1:03:09Speaker 02

Wow, we're big fans of that.

• 1:03:10H. Foley?

We did a shrimp cocktail, you like the shrimp cocktail, alright.

• 1:03:13Speaker 03

  Spicier the better.

• 1:03:14H. Foley?

Yeah, oh, that'll open you up.

• 1:03:15Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's the best.

• 1:03:17H. Foley?

  Talk about booger sugar.

• 1:03:18Speaker 03

  Yeah, right?

• 1:03:20Speaker 02

It's so funny, man, talk about three fat dirtbags, I like St. Elmo's. Oh, I love St. Elmo's. Three fat dirtbags will find a...

• 1:03:29H. Foley?

It's not the Playboy man saying, like, "I know that shrimp cocktail."

• 1:03:34Speaker 03

  Oh, man.

• 1:03:35Speaker 02

Oh, God. It's just like, that's so classy, that's like, I like going to get a nice steak down in town, we'd like put our best shirts on and we're like, we're yelling at each other to act right when we're in there?

• 1:03:46H. Foley?

I like that it's already in the sauce, I don't gotta dip, it's just sitting in there. Those are big boys, too.

• 1:03:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:03:51H. Foley?

I don't know where they get them, we're in the Landlocked State.

• 1:03:56H. Foley?

Uh, you pee in the shower?

• 1:03:57Speaker 03

  Hell, yeah.

• 1:03:58Speaker 02

Hold on, back to that, how you get your steak cooked and what's the cut of steak? You sit down, what's the cut of steak?

• 1:04:02Speaker 03

  New York strip, medium rare.

• 1:04:04H. Foley?

  No kidding, New York strip?

• 1:04:05Speaker 03

  Sauteed onions.

• 1:04:06H. Foley?

  Sauteed onions?

• 1:04:08Speaker 02

Little bit of flares, guy, that's one of those fucking stick out pieces.

• 1:04:12Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:04:12Speaker 02

Who's got the sauteed onions? It's Marcus King. You don't fucking forget it. There's, there's sauteed onions on a table, you know Marcus King's around here somewhere. Ah, damn, okay, very nice.

• 1:04:24H. Foley?

So you're peeing in the shower, you brush your teeth in there?

• 1:04:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:04:27H. Foley?

You got your toothbrush in there?

• 1:04:29Speaker 03

  Toothbrush is in there.

• 1:04:30H. Foley?

  Ooh.

• 1:04:31Speaker 03

  That's always the power move.

• 1:04:32Speaker 02

Oh, that's not great though. Leaving it in there is not great.

• 1:04:35Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:04:36Speaker 02

Although they've done, they've done studies that any, doesn't matter where in the bathroom it is, it's open to the same bacteria.

• 1:04:43H. Foley?

  Bad news.

• 1:04:43Speaker 03

  Something's gonna happen.

• 1:04:44Speaker 02

There's just something weird to me of like, I get in the shower, my sister used to do it, so I'd like, I'd get in the shower, and then like, I would get it wet.

• 1:04:52Speaker 03

  Hmm.

• 1:04:52Speaker 02

And then like, she would, you, I'm like, that's fucking grody to me. That's nasty. But, if it's just you and your wife, I get it's different.

• 1:04:59Speaker 03

Well, see, at our house, I kinda have the downstairs.

• 1:05:02Speaker 02

Love that. So it's just you, you got your own little domicile.

• 1:05:05Speaker 03

Yeah, so nobody else is really in there.

• 1:05:06H. Foley?

Was this the, wait, the shower, you mean?

• 1:05:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:05:09H. Foley?

How's that broken up? The bedroom's upstairs, master bedroom, you gotta...

• 1:05:13Speaker 03

  The main floor.

• 1:05:14H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 1:05:15Speaker 03

  She's, I mean, my wife's, she's, uh, messy.

• 1:05:20Speaker 02

  Really?

• 1:05:21Speaker 03

  Drives me crazy.

• 1:05:21Speaker 02

Yeah, a lot, a lot of these broads are.

• 1:05:23Speaker 03

Yeah, these broads, let me tell you.

• 1:05:25H. Foley?

  I'm the messy one.

• 1:05:26Speaker 02

  Messy broads.

• 1:05:27Speaker 03

And I'm, I'm really meticulous, I like my space really neat.

• 1:05:30Speaker 02

  Same way.

• 1:05:31H. Foley?

  No kidding.

• 1:05:31Speaker 03

So all my stuff's downstairs, and my sauna, I work out in my sauna, and then the shower's right there.

• 1:05:37Speaker 02

You got the sauna at the house.

• 1:05:38H. Foley?

  Alright.

• 1:05:39Speaker 02

Is it like, built in, or did you buy like, one and it's like?

• 1:05:42Speaker 03

I bought a, a cheapo one, it was like fifteen hundred dollars on Amazon.

• 1:05:45Speaker 02

Yeah, I got, I got one too.

• 1:05:46Speaker 03

But it's an infrared, and I sit in there, it's great.

• 1:05:49H. Foley?

  Hmm.

• 1:05:50Speaker 03

I got a cold plunge, Bert Kreischer gave me a cold plunge.

• 1:05:53H. Foley?

  There you go.

• 1:05:53Speaker 03

  Shout out, Burt.

• 1:05:54Speaker 02

  Shout out, Burt.

• 1:05:55H. Foley?

Shout out to Burt with the cold plunge. He's done more for cold plunging. Yes, he has. The man.

• 1:06:02Speaker 02

He's on a bit of a tear at the moment, I don't know if you've seen pictures.

• 1:06:05H. Foley?

  Oh, is he?

• 1:06:05Speaker 02

This guy's going after it, he's drinking.

• 1:06:07Speaker 03

When I was talking to the bonfire guys, we were talking about my last time off the wagon, and Jay says, "With Bert Kreischer, I'm sure," and it was, it was actually with Burt.

• 1:06:15H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 1:06:16Speaker 03

It's like, a couple of years ago.

• 1:06:17Speaker 02

And there's just, I mean, he's the machine, it's the story, but like, it's just fun drinking.

• 1:06:22Speaker 03

  Oh, he's the best.

• 1:06:23Speaker 02

It's just, we're going out on the road with him, and it's just like, it's a good time.

• 1:06:26Speaker 03

  God bless you.

• 1:06:27H. Foley?

We were in Tennessee with him, we ended up at a frat party, and that was, that was, it was awesome. It was the coolest, it was the coolest, it was the coolest night of our lives.

• 1:06:34Speaker 03

  I'm sure.

• 1:06:34H. Foley?

And man, the last night we were with him, the porosus hadn't just come out, but that was our first time drinking it, man, that was going down too smooth, and I was hammered.

• 1:06:44Speaker 03

  Man, he's...

• 1:06:45H. Foley?

Falling through a hotel in West Virginia.

• 1:06:47Speaker 03

Oh, man. God, he's the best. Like, I remember, first time I met him, I was like hungover. Um, and I showed up at his house just in rough shape, you know? And I told him, "I'm in rough shape, buddy." He was like, "I'll set you up."

• 1:07:01H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 1:07:02Speaker 03

He took good care of me.

• 1:07:03H. Foley?

  He's the best.

• 1:07:03Speaker 03

He had like a Keurig machine, but for like, uh, cocktails.

• 1:07:08H. Foley?

  Of course he does.

• 1:07:09Speaker 03

Which I'd never seen anything like that. And then, me and him just went-

• 1:07:12H. Foley?

  An IV of Greyhound?

• 1:07:12Speaker 03

Yeah, we went beer for beer on the podcast, and we talked for like, three hours.

• 1:07:16Speaker 02

Yeah. I've, I've, I've, I've watched that. A very, uh, very, very good episode, yeah.

• 1:07:20Speaker 03

You can see me getting more and more drunk.

• 1:07:23Speaker 02

There's like a line where you like, start straightening out, and then you teeter the other way.

• 1:07:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:07:26Speaker 02

You're like, you're like, "You know, for sure."

• 1:07:27Speaker 03

And you know what I had to do the next day? Uh, I had to speak at a, like a Sober Nation event. So the first thing I had to do when I walked in there was like, "Hey, I'm hungover, and the thing about-"

• 1:07:40H. Foley?

  Stay away from Bert Kreischer.

• 1:07:43Speaker 03

The thing about the wagon is, you fall off, you get back on. You know, I had to do that whole speech. But, yeah, that was a dark day.

• 1:07:49H. Foley?

  Hmm.

• 1:07:50Speaker 03

In his defense, he didn't know I had to speak at a Sober Nation.

• 1:07:53H. Foley?

Yeah, Burt's the best. I'll tell you, he, he, he has like this fatherly, just feel good around him. You know what I mean? Just the best. Him and Leanne.

• 1:08:02Speaker 02

  I mean, listen.

• 1:08:04H. Foley?

  Where are we at?

• 1:08:07Speaker 02

Most interesting man in the world, for sure. Couple of questions, you open your eyes underwater in the pool?

• 1:08:14Speaker 03

  Hmm. I gotta say no.

• 1:08:17Speaker 02

  No to that one.

• 1:08:18H. Foley?

How do you feel about the rotisserie chicken?

• 1:08:20Speaker 03

  Love it.

• 1:08:20Speaker 02

  Love it.

• 1:08:21Speaker 03

  Okay, big fan.

• 1:08:22H. Foley?

  There you go.

• 1:08:22Speaker 03

  My wife, too.

• 1:08:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:24Speaker 03

I knew, I knew I was gonna marry my wife, she was on Molly, in a field, at a festival. It's like our third date, and she ate a whole rotisserie chicken with her bare hands.

• 1:08:33Speaker 02

  Yeah. Good for her.

• 1:08:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:08:36H. Foley?

  That's it.

• 1:08:37Speaker 02

Will you be the rotisserie chicken of my life?

• 1:08:41H. Foley?

Will you dance at a wedding?

• 1:08:45Speaker 03

If I'm drinking, which I'm not anymore, so.

• 1:08:47H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 1:08:48Speaker 02

Uh, do you do karaoke and if so, do you have a go-to song?

• 1:08:52Speaker 03

Last time we did it, I did "The Rooster" by Alice in Chains.

• 1:08:55Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 1:08:56Speaker 03

My wife hosted a after-bash thing where they did karaoke at this bar in Charleston. And I got up and I sang "The Rooster" with my trumpet player.

• 1:09:04H. Foley?

  That's awesome.

• 1:09:05Speaker 02

  It's a good time.

• 1:09:06H. Foley?

Do you have a favorite cover?

• 1:09:08Speaker 03

Favorite cover? Uh, "Ramblin' Man," Allman Brothers.

• 1:09:13Speaker 02

  You're an Allman Brothers guy.

• 1:09:15Speaker 03

  I am.

• 1:09:15Speaker 02

  Yeah, through and through, right?

• 1:09:17Speaker 03

  Big time.

• 1:09:17H. Foley?

  Can't beat that.

• 1:09:18Speaker 02

Uh, what do you call, like, a gentleman's club? You know, you know, if you were going.

• 1:09:25H. Foley?

  Where people dance.

• 1:09:26Speaker 02

What were you saying, like, let's go to the...

• 1:09:29Speaker 03

  I'd say strip club.

• 1:09:30Speaker 02

Strip club, okay. That's the middle, that's the middle. Gentlemen's club, strip club, titty bar. Titty bar's a bad look.

• 1:09:36Speaker 03

  Titty bar, yeah.

• 1:09:36Speaker 02

Titty bars, titty bars. You've, you've been to the strip club too much when you start calling it a titty bar.

• 1:09:41H. Foley?

You said it before, but how would you naturally say it? Is it ground beef or is it hamburger meat?

• 1:09:45Speaker 03

  Ground beef.

• 1:09:46H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 1:09:46Speaker 02

Gentlemen, uh, you got name-brand luggage?

• 1:09:51Speaker 02

  You got good luggage?

• 1:09:52Speaker 03

  I've got vintage luggage.

• 1:09:53H. Foley?

  You're a vintage guy?

• 1:09:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:09:55H. Foley?

  How much was that shirt?

• 1:09:56Speaker 03

This was probably like 20 bucks.

• 1:09:58Speaker 02

I heard him say new, old stock.

• 1:10:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:00Speaker 02

Which is, which is, that is, that is a very specific thing to know in vintage, correct? Yeah. New, old stock is, it was made at the time, but it's never been used.

• 1:10:12Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:10:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:10:13H. Foley?

  Oh, no kidding.

• 1:10:14Speaker 02

So it was made in the 70s or 80s, 90s.

• 1:10:16H. Foley?

  How does that happen?

• 1:10:16Speaker 02

But never been sold, I don't know.

• 1:10:18H. Foley?

  Sitting in a warehouse?

• 1:10:19Speaker 03

  Yeah, people just...

• 1:10:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, stores, whatever.

• 1:10:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:10:21H. Foley?

Do you have like the old luggage, like the handle thing?

• 1:10:23Speaker 03

Yeah, there's one of my suitcase, I got a duffel bag. I've got this great leather duffel bag and it, the bottom zips and I can put my boots in there. And, uh, my big luggage is like a, it's like a wardrobe, uh, or like a...

• 1:10:38H. Foley?

I got you, like it folds down and...

• 1:10:40Speaker 03

Yeah, and it opens up and then you unzip it and when you close it up, it looks like a suitcase. It was made by American Tourister in the 70s, 60s and 70s.

• 1:10:49H. Foley?

And how many pairs of boots do you have?

• 1:10:52Speaker 03

  Man, I love cowboy boots.

• 1:10:53H. Foley?

  So you have a bunch?

• 1:10:54Speaker 03

  I have a bunch.

• 1:10:55Speaker 02

He's prefacing to be a lot.

• 1:10:56H. Foley?

When you go out on, when you go out on the road, do you just bring one pair?

• 1:10:59Speaker 03

So, me and the band have a wardrobe closet on the road. So, everything's just there.

• 1:11:04H. Foley?

  Nice.

• 1:11:05Speaker 03

It's like a little, you know, house.

• 1:11:07H. Foley?

So you're just gonna grab it?

• 1:11:08Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:11:09Speaker 02

And is that, huh, who's choosing that and when is that chosen? Like, what you're wearing that night, or is it the same every night? Is it just like, hey, I have five shirts I pick from?

• 1:11:19Speaker 03

It's kind of a variation. Like, we went out, like, we've been on the road a long time with Chris Stapleton.

• 1:11:24Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:11:25Speaker 03

And he wears the same thing every day.

• 1:11:26Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:11:27Speaker 03

And there's a lot of peace in that. And I have kind of a variation of the same thing.

• 1:11:31Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:11:31Speaker 03

But it's, just, you'd be surprised, just that one thing you don't have to think about.

• 1:11:35Speaker 02

  I'm right there with you.

• 1:11:36Speaker 03

  You know?

• 1:11:37Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm. I have the, I have a, I have three things and it's a very, it's like a Black Dicky's jacket. It's a, you know, a Carhartt shirt, it's all the same.

• 1:11:44H. Foley?

Jack White did that infestingly for the, for, yeah, for a long time.

• 1:11:48Speaker 02

Hmm. Well, you put your hand on the wall when you're peeing at a urinal.

• 1:11:52Speaker 03

  I will.

• 1:11:53Speaker 02

  Really?

• 1:11:53Speaker 03

I, one time, uh, I was in the Bahamas, 'cause my manager has a house down there.

• 1:11:58Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:11:59Speaker 03

And I noticed that every urinal I went to, they had like a, a pad, like a cushy pad on the top of every urinal. And I finally asked somebody, it's like, that's just for anybody that, you know, needs to rest their head.

• 1:12:11H. Foley?

  Rest their head?

• 1:12:12Speaker 03

I said, well, now, this is living.

• 1:12:13Speaker 02

  That's a, that's a motion I can get behind.

• 1:12:16Speaker 03

These guys are leaning their head against this pad on top of the urinal.

• 1:12:19Speaker 02

  That's crazy to me.

• 1:12:20H. Foley?

  Are you a cologne guy?

• 1:12:22Speaker 03

There's one cologne I like, and it's a John Varvatos. And it was given to me, 'cause I've known John a long time and...

• 1:12:30Speaker 02

  Do you know John Varvatos?

• 1:12:31Speaker 03

  I do.

• 1:12:31Speaker 02

  What?

• 1:12:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:33Speaker 02

  How?

• 1:12:33Speaker 03

I met him through a friend of mine who, uh, he actually, one of the...

• 1:12:37Speaker 02

This is how stupid I am, I thought he was, I thought he was just like a... I thought it was like Louis Vuitton or whatever, I thought he was just like an old famous good guy.

• 1:12:44H. Foley?

I knew you were a vampire!

• 1:12:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:47Speaker 02

  I get him.

• 1:12:48Speaker 03

I met, I met him through a mutual friend and, uh, he, uh, I think we were doing like Fallon or something and he, he got me in the band, you know, looking right.

• 1:12:58H. Foley?

  No kidding.

• 1:12:59Speaker 03

And he had this cologne, I was never really a cologne guy, I used to do like Petrouli oil.

• 1:13:03H. Foley?

  Really?

• 1:13:04Speaker 03

And I smelled it and I really liked it.

• 1:13:06H. Foley?

  You were a Petrouli guy?

• 1:13:08Speaker 03

I was, in high school, it was rough.

• 1:13:09H. Foley?

Oh, that was the way, didn't have any friends. What are you doing with that?

• 1:13:13Speaker 03

  Smelling like wood chips.

• 1:13:14H. Foley?

  Oh my god!

• 1:13:16Speaker 03

  Yeah, no good.

• 1:13:17Speaker 02

Uh, okay, I mean, how many, uh, how many suits do you own?

• 1:13:22Speaker 03

  Suits, that's another thing, um...

• 1:13:24Speaker 02

Cause you have like, I've seen you in like the vintage suits and stuff.

• 1:13:26H. Foley?

It was going into Kill Tony last year, they were real sharp.

• 1:13:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:13:29H. Foley?

We were in an elevator behind you.

• 1:13:30Speaker 02

Yeah, we saw you, I was looking, I'm like, there's fucking, we were sitting in the window, fucking there's Marcus, yeah.

• 1:13:34Speaker 03

  I love my western suits.

• 1:13:36H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:36Speaker 02

How many of those do you think you have?

• 1:13:38Speaker 03

  Yeah, closet full.

• 1:13:39Speaker 02

Closet full, yeah, good for you.

• 1:13:41H. Foley?

  Walk-in closet at the house?

• 1:13:42Speaker 03

The wife does, yeah. My stuff's kinda dispersed.

• 1:13:45H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 1:13:46Speaker 03

  You know?

• 1:13:47H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 1:13:47Speaker 02

Back to the boots, how many do you think you have? Fifty?

• 1:13:51Speaker 03

  Fifty's high.

• 1:13:52Speaker 02

  Fifty's high, okay.

• 1:13:53Speaker 03

I'd say probably like, ten or twelve.

• 1:13:54Speaker 02

  Ten or twelve.

• 1:13:55Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:13:55Speaker 02

  Oh, that's...

• 1:13:56H. Foley?

Can you wear them fresh, like, can you get a pair, like, say you got a show, tonight?

• 1:14:00Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:14:00H. Foley?

Uh, you go, see a new pair of boots you like, can you throw them on and go play, or do you gotta break them in a little bit?

• 1:14:06Speaker 03

Yeah, my dogs are really fussy.

• 1:14:07H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 1:14:08Speaker 02

Man, what a way to put that.

• 1:14:10Speaker 03

  I got a, I got a guy...

• 1:14:11H. Foley?

Short the encore, huh? My dogs are barking.

• 1:14:14Speaker 03

My dogs are barking. I got a guy in Nashville who, uh, makes a lot of my boots now, he just...

• 1:14:20H. Foley?

  Makes them?

• 1:14:20Speaker 03

Yeah. This guy named Wes, his company's called Music City Leather, and he makes them in his basement.

• 1:14:26H. Foley?

  No kidding?

• 1:14:26Speaker 03

  And he's just, you know...

• 1:14:28H. Foley?

Does it, can they break them in for you, or no? That's something you have to do on your own?

• 1:14:31Speaker 03

See, like, the more you're willing to spend on a pair of boots, the less the break-in period's gonna be.

• 1:14:36H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 1:14:37Speaker 03

And whenever I talk to people about buying cowboy boots, like, I've got every rung, and like, you know, I don't wanna name any names, but like, the cheaper ones, they're... Like, I can't go buy them off the shelf and go play a gig, or my feet'll be hurting.

• 1:14:51Speaker 02

What's a chea- but no names are, what's a cheaper one? Like, a hundred bucks, two hundred bucks?

• 1:14:55Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, like, five hundred bucks.

• 1:14:57Speaker 02

  Five hundred bucks.

• 1:14:57Speaker 03

You don't really wanna spend less than that on cowboy boots.

• 1:14:59H. Foley?

What's the most you've ever spent?

• 1:15:02Speaker 03

  Four thousand dollars.

• 1:15:03H. Foley?

  Yeah!

• 1:15:05Speaker 03

  That's what I'm talking about.

• 1:15:06H. Foley?

  That's what we're looking for.

• 1:15:08Speaker 03

Get a call from the accountant.

• 1:15:10Speaker 02

  The hell did you do?

• 1:15:11Speaker 03

What are you doing? And I was like, I said, look, this is a write-off. And they said, no, you can't do this as a write-off, you know? It's really only something like, this is literally the example they gave me was, just like Lady Gaga's meat dress would be a write-off because she can't wear that out in public. And I was like, no, no, no, these boots.

• 1:15:29H. Foley?

I ain't wasting a good New York strip.

• 1:15:31Speaker 03

Yeah, so these boots are blue, they're suede. You cannot, I cannot wear these boots outside.

• 1:15:36Speaker 02

So they're only worn for work?

• 1:15:37H. Foley?

  Ah, yeah.

• 1:15:38Speaker 03

Just for performing. And I said, you write them off.

• 1:15:40H. Foley?

  There you go.

• 1:15:41Speaker 03

And they said, well, we better not catch you wearing them at the grocery store or something.

• 1:15:44Speaker 02

That's also a tough one, you get caught in the fucking, your blue suede boots, dude.

• 1:15:49H. Foley?

These ain't the ones I was talking about. It's another pair.

• 1:15:53Speaker 02

Uh, I mean, I, listen, I gotta call it, this guy's walking, I mean, I love, he's something, he's all class. You know? What are you thinking?

• 1:16:02H. Foley?

He's trash, baby. He's a hundred percent garbage and we love it.

• 1:16:06Speaker 03

  Thank God.

• 1:16:07H. Foley?

  Are you kidding me?

• 1:16:08Speaker 02

  Man, so good.

• 1:16:09H. Foley?

Mr. Marcus King, what a home run. Absolutely fantastic. Joe, one, one last question. Are you a fast food guy?

• 1:16:16Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:16:16H. Foley?

What do you like? Me and you, just me and you.

• 1:16:19Speaker 03

  I mean.

• 1:16:20H. Foley?

  We'll cut this.

• 1:16:21Speaker 03

  I mean McDonald's.

• 1:16:22H. Foley?

  You're Mickey D's guy.

• 1:16:23Speaker 03

Classic. McDonald's, double quarter pounder, filet of fish.

• 1:16:28H. Foley?

  The filet of fish kicker.

• 1:16:31Speaker 02

If there was any question if he's trash or not.

• 1:16:33Speaker 03

If there was any question, there it is.

• 1:16:34Speaker 02

There it is, the filet of fish kicker.

• 1:16:36H. Foley?

Marcus King, the brand new LP Darling Blue is out right now. Buddy, congratulations. Unbelievable tale. We love you so much.

• 1:16:43Speaker 03

  Thanks for having me.

• 1:16:43H. Foley?

Anything else you want the folks out there to know?

• 1:16:46Speaker 03

Just, thanks for having me, man, that's it.

• 1:16:49Speaker 02

Love it, buddy. Yeah, appreciate you, man.

• 1:16:51H. Foley?

Gang, we love you. We'll see you next week.

• 1:16:52Speaker 03

  Peace.
