  Phenom.

He's about to start the European leg of his world tour. You can get tickets at joshjohnsoncomedy.com. Give it up for Josh Johnson, everybody. Let's go.

• 3:07Speaker 03

  Thanks, man.

• 3:08H. Foley?

  Look at you, man.

• 3:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:10H. Foley?

Both worlds. You got the legacy media, you got the internet. You figured it out.

• 3:15Speaker 03

Yeah, when you say legacy media, I get nervous. Usually legacy media is followed right by a takedown. It's like, yeah.

• 3:25Speaker 00

You and your corporate chills, man.

• 3:26Speaker 03

Yeah, you're real popular with legacy media and weren't you on some island?

• 3:30Speaker 00

  I got the flight manuals.

• 3:33H. Foley?

  Traditional media.

• 3:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 3:35H. Foley?

Buddy, I mean, we've been talking about it for months. Congratulations.

• 3:39Speaker 03

  Thanks, man.

• 3:40H. Foley?

You're absolutely killing it, man. You're moving some tickets.

• 3:43Speaker 00

  Kid does well.

• 3:44H. Foley?

And it's good to see, and you're heading over to Europe, man. That's fucking cool as shit.

• 3:47Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, so I'm gonna go to some places I've never been before. And that is where I get the most nervous of like, I want to like capture the sensibility as quickly as possible, but when you get there and then you have to do the show right away, it becomes a bit tough where not only is it a little bit easier because I'm actually an American, but sometimes you do get the opportunity to go to a city a day ahead and go like walk around or you meet people, you talk to people and everything. And so I'm very excited to do those shows, but those are probably like in the realm of nerves, those are probably in those last few rungs that you get.

• 4:27H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 4:28Speaker 03

  You know?

• 4:29Speaker 00

Anytime I've ever performed overseas, I'm always like, minutes leading up to it, I'm like, "Do you guys know what a supermarket is?" Like, I'm like, "Cheese, go into all the vocab words."

• 4:37Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 4:38H. Foley?

What a well-thought-out, articulate answer. I have a feeling we are about to get somewhat of a master class in class.

• 4:46Speaker 00

Could be. Comes always a very-

• 4:47H. Foley?

This kid's put, this guy's put together.

• 4:49Speaker 00

Put together. Also, I mean, you know, pull the fourth wall back a little bit. It's 12:45, you offer him a beer right away. He's just like, "No, I don't drink."

• 4:59Speaker 00

So, I don't think, I don't think he's cut from the same cloth as you are.

• 5:01H. Foley?

But he said that. He's like, "No, I don't drink." I was like, "Hmm."

• 5:05Speaker 00

  You start writing that down.

• 5:05H. Foley?

Sharp guy. Um, take us back. Give us the origin story. Where were you born? Where'd you grow up?

• 5:11Speaker 00

  Southern kid, correct?

• 5:11H. Foley?

  Is that true?

• 5:12Speaker 03

Yeah, I grew up in Alexandria, Louisiana.

• 5:15H. Foley?

  Oh, okay.

• 5:17Speaker 03

So, the middle of the state, central Louisiana.

• 5:20H. Foley?

  No kidding?

• 5:21Speaker 03

And there is, uh, a disappointing amount going on. There is, to say you're the, in the middle.

• 5:27H. Foley?

  Uh-huh.

• 5:28Speaker 03

It's, we're pretty far from New Orleans where everything is happening and what everyone knows and everything, but we are in an unfair path of the hurricanes.

• 5:38H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 5:38Speaker 03

To say that it's like, we're not in the Gulf, so it's like, to still get hit the way we would get hit growing up-

• 5:45H. Foley?

I've never picked up on your accent before, and I'm hearing it now. That's crazy.

• 5:48Speaker 03

No, no one ever does, and it's, it's kind of, like, even people didn't pick up on it when I lived there.

• 5:54Speaker 00

Where the hell are you from?

• 5:55Speaker 03

  Yeah, like I used to-

• 5:56H. Foley?

That's goddamn Yankee out of here.

• 5:57Speaker 03

Yeah, I used to work at restaurants, and I'd, I'd ask, you know, for people's order, and they'd be like, "Where are you from?" And I'm like, "Right there."

• 6:05Speaker 00

That's my house, that's my house, right out the window.

• 6:07Speaker 03

And they're like, "No, no way." I'm like, "Yeah, no, I'm, I'm, this is just how I talk."

• 6:12H. Foley?

I don't trust you. Get me another waiter. Um, what are we talking about, uh, uh, like, is it swampy? Is it, what is it?

• 6:21Speaker 00

  That's all you think?

• 6:22H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 6:23Speaker 00

You guys got land there, or is it all mushy?

• 6:25Speaker 03

I mean, there are levees that can break.

• 6:28Speaker 00

So, I've heard on legacy media.

• 6:29Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. There are bayous and everything. But, you know, it, it's interesting, because we had everything that you would need for-

• 6:40Speaker 03

A pretty substantial city. Okay. But we just didn't have any of it to the degree that it felt like a major city. Okay. If that makes sense. Gotcha. We didn't have, and this is just, some of this is opinion, but a lot of it is just fact. We didn't have enough people. Okay. Okay, that's usually a great start to like a substantial city. Uh, we have an airport, but I think there's only six flights a day. That's pretty good. A lot of places don't have an airport. A lot of places don't have an airport, right? I'll give you that. Six flights. Where are those flights to though? Uh, they're all connections. We only fly to, I think, Atlanta and to North Carolina. What the fuck? So it's like you have to, like when I lived in- Those are gun running flights. Yeah, it's like when I lived in Chicago.

• 7:24Speaker 03

Oh, to get there had to be impossible. To get home, and then I was like broke in Chicago. So it's like, I would save up to be able to go home to be on these two flights. And the first time I had been on a plane was leaving, like Alexandria to move to Chicago. Yeah, so like, when I graduated college and I decided to move to Chicago, like start doing comedy and stuff, that was like the first plane ride I ever been on. That's nuts. So I got such a terrible headache. I was 22, yeah. Was it a normal plane or was it a smaller plane? That's gotta be a small plane. I didn't know, I didn't know what a normal was. Was there propellers on it? There was no propellers, so it was, it was a, probably a commercial plane. Gotcha. But the commercial was short. Gotcha. And so, so then, I remember taking off and being like, wow.

• 8:07Speaker 03

And I was like, and, and it was emotional too because, you know, I was like really leaving home. Like I had left home for college, but I was only two hours away. I was like properly leaving home and my mom was seeing me off and everything. It's kind of a movie. Yeah, and, and, and so, I was just, I was like really kind of getting cut up about it, like as, as we were about to take off. And then, it's my first flight, so we're like 45 degrees and I'm like, whoa, this is the world?

• 8:33H. Foley?

Doesn't even make it off the runway.

• 8:34Speaker 03

This is the highest I've ever been.

• 8:36Speaker 00

  The plane was not.

• 8:38Speaker 03

Mama! The plane was not high and I was like, whoa, this must be what a billionaire feels like. Yeah, and then, and then we get, we get about.

• 8:48H. Foley?

  So this is space.

• 8:49Speaker 03

Yeah, we get about forty-five degrees for the turn and, and we start tipping and I'm like, uh-oh.

• 8:55Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 8:55Speaker 03

Cause I always thought, this is very dumb, but I always thought that when you flew, you just flew straight. Like, I thought they.

• 9:01Speaker 00

I don't just, listen, you're not wrong. I feel like they turned too much sometimes.

• 9:05Speaker 03

I thought they got on the runway and then they pointed where they were trying to go and then they took off and went that way.

• 9:12H. Foley?

  Like a slingshot.

• 9:13Speaker 03

So as soon as we turned, I was like, oh, we're going down. This is what happens when you leave home.

• 9:18Speaker 00

It was good for a few seconds.

• 9:20H. Foley?

I should've stayed at the restaurant.

• 9:22Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 9:22Speaker 00

My mom's gonna watch me crash. This is bad.

• 9:24H. Foley?

Alright, hang on. So, uh, real quick, was the city something, um, years ago? Like, was there industry there and it left? Like, would you say?

• 9:33Speaker 03

Yeah, it was like an air force base.

• 9:34Speaker 00

It looks pretty, I mean, decent sized city.

• 9:36H. Foley?

Did you guys live in the city proper, in the suburbs of the city?

• 9:39Speaker 03

So, when I was born, I, I believe we were in the, yeah, so we were in the city proper. Like, if you even type in like, I mean, if you, heh, heh.

• 9:50Speaker 00

  What do you got?

• 9:51Speaker 03

Okay, so maybe type in Alexandria, Louisiana, Sonia Quarters?

• 9:56H. Foley?

  Sonia Quarters?

• 9:58Speaker 03

  S-O-N-I-A and then quarters?

• 10:00H. Foley?

  Is that an apartment complex?

• 10:01Speaker 03

No, no, it is, let's see.

• 10:03Speaker 00

  Like, I got this.

• 10:04Speaker 03

  Does it look?

• 10:05Speaker 00

  About Sonia Quarters.

• 10:08H. Foley?

Is that where you grew up in? Something like that?

• 10:09Speaker 03

  Uh, yes, so.

• 10:10Speaker 00

It don't look, it don't look great if I'm being honest with you.

• 10:12H. Foley?

  That's like Elvis's house.

• 10:13Speaker 03

Yeah, no, no, no. So, so if you zoom out, so, okay, there's a, there's a, a pretty substantial part of Alexandria, Louisiana that is like, really bad off.

• 10:23H. Foley?

Are you from the forties? That's crazy!

• 10:26Speaker 03

Well, that picture might be, but I, I swear I'm born from now-ish.

• 10:30H. Foley?

  It's a vampire.

• 10:31Speaker 03

No, no, there's no centers going on.

• 10:33H. Foley?

Wait, was, was your, was your house like that though? Was it like an old house like that?

• 10:38Speaker 03

Yeah, so, so, okay, the, let me see if I can find.

• 10:46Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 10:47H. Foley?

  Are you looking at these?

• 10:48Speaker 00

Am I looking at the, are you looking at more of the aerial view or the ha- the house?

• 10:52Speaker 03

So, so this house kind of would be something similar to when I was really little.

• 10:58H. Foley?

  Let me see.

• 10:58Speaker 00

Gotcha. Yeah, the one we were looking at.

• 11:00Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 11:00H. Foley?

It's where Miles Davis was born. That's crazy.

• 11:03Speaker 03

And so then, um, we lived in, when my parents got back together, we lived in Pineville for a little bit.

• 11:09Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 11:10Speaker 03

Pineville is actually having like quite the come up.

• 11:12Speaker 00

  Now, or at the time?

• 11:14Speaker 03

  No, no, no, no.

• 11:15H. Foley?

  Seven flights a day.

• 11:15Speaker 03

  So Pineville is like...

• 11:19Speaker 00

I'm so intrigued. I've never looked up someone's hometown. This is amazing.

• 11:23Speaker 03

Dude, there, there's a couple of things. Oh, man, you know what I should have done?

• 11:26Speaker 00

Oh, Pineville's a little cute town.

• 11:27Speaker 03

Yeah, so Pineville's cute now. There was a time-

• 11:30Speaker 00

A great place to call home, city of Pineville.

• 11:32Speaker 03

Yeah, Pineville used to have just so much less going on.

• 11:36Speaker 00

  For sure.

• 11:36Speaker 03

And so that was probably a little closer to like the sticks a little bit.

• 11:40H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 11:40Speaker 03

Then, we were only in Pineville for a little bit, and I think that's because my dad's apartment was in Pineville. When we all moved in together, we moved back, and these are all across the river from each other. So it's just a lot of carrying.

• 11:53H. Foley?

  It's getting trashy real quick.

• 11:54Speaker 00

Listen, your parents getting back together is a, is a, is always a red flag, not a red flag for garbage. Across the river ain't great, if I'm being honest.

• 12:02H. Foley?

  Didn't understand how airplanes worked.

• 12:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 12:04H. Foley?

Hold on, let's go, let, let's go back.

• 12:06Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 12:07H. Foley?

Okay, so your mom and dad are from this town, from Alexandria.

• 12:10Speaker 03

  Yes, yes.

• 12:11H. Foley?

Um, what did they do for a living when you were born?

• 12:13Speaker 03

So, both teachers. So my mom-

• 12:15H. Foley?

  Both teachers.

• 12:15Speaker 03

  Special ed teacher.

• 12:16H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 12:17Speaker 03

And she, um, so basically, she was a special ed teacher up until I was like 10, or like 9 or 10 or something like that.

• 12:25H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 12:25Speaker 03

And then she, she had to have brain surgery.

• 12:28H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 12:28Speaker 03

And so, you know, that was like, that was a really scary time because-

• 12:32H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 12:32Speaker 03

Uh, they didn't give her like a great prognosis or anything.

• 12:35H. Foley?

  Was it cancer?

• 12:36Speaker 03

Yeah, it was, it was, it was a rare type of-

• 12:39H. Foley?

  Tumor?

• 12:39Speaker 03

  Uh, tumor.

• 12:40H. Foley?

  Wow.

• 12:40Speaker 03

And then she had the surgery, surgery was successful, but then they were like, you're not gonna walk, you're not gonna, like, it was all this stuff.

• 12:47H. Foley?

  Jesus.

• 12:47Speaker 03

And then she managed to make a full recovery, like, walking and, and like, all of her, like, they, they were like, you're gonna have trouble computing. And everything like you just won't be the same and something like that and she and she was so it was really a miracle.

• 13:00Speaker 00

  It's amazing.

• 13:00Speaker 03

And then she transitioned because special ed teaching is such like hard strenuous work and everything. She couldn't do it after the surgery. Um, so she transitioned to becoming a librarian and so then like basically most of my uh, late elementary, junior high, all of high school was just like spent at the library after school because she would pick me up. But then she's still at work. So she would be pick, she'd take her lunch break late to come pick me up from school. And then we would just chill at the library till she was done.

• 13:30H. Foley?

No kidding. So not the school library.

• 13:32Speaker 03

  Not the school library.

• 13:33H. Foley?

  Public library.

• 13:34Speaker 03

  Public library. Yeah.

• 13:35H. Foley?

Was she a teacher though at the same school that you would have went to? She was in your school district? Imagine there wasn't many.

• 13:41Speaker 03

I wasn't in special ed. So it was, oh, oh, got you, got you. I thought you meant at the same school.

• 13:46Speaker 00

Foley just thinks everybody's in special ed because he was.

• 13:49H. Foley?

I didn't mean that. I meant in the same school district. Was she teaching in your school district?

• 13:55Speaker 03

Like I, I guess you could say the school, I guess I was so, I was so little as well that I wasn't, I guess paying attention to what the district was. So I'm, I'm sure, I'm sure she would have been in the.

• 14:06Speaker 00

I've also, Foley has such, he gets such, that's what makes him a great host and interviewer. He has such specific questions sometimes that like I've never seen someone just go, I'm, what are you talking about?

• 14:20H. Foley?

The dryness that would you answer that?

• 14:22Speaker 00

Oh no, honey. I'm not, also he'd like, you guys are like the antithesis of each other. I've never thought about what school district I was in when I was in first grade.

• 14:31H. Foley?

Okay, very. All right. Your mom's a librarian, your dad's a teacher.

• 14:35Speaker 03

  Yeah, so my.

• 14:36H. Foley?

  Brothers and sisters?

• 14:37Speaker 03

  No, it's just me.

• 14:38H. Foley?

  Just you?

• 14:39Speaker 03

Yeah. Yeah. And so my dad was like a, a paraprofessional. So he was kind of in that same line of um, education as my mom, except he would be assisting a lot when it came to kids with special needs. Okay. That went uh, further beyond like just the, the classroom if they needed help with other, other stuff. And then he was like um, a volunteer slash worked at the Boys and Girls Club after that.

• 15:08Speaker 00

Yeah, you're cut from good cloth.

• 15:09H. Foley?

  Cut from good cloth.

• 15:10Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, no, no, very sweet people.

• 15:11Speaker 00

  Very sweet.

• 15:12H. Foley?

Where did they both go to school? Where'd they both go to college?

• 15:15Speaker 03

They both went to Grambling University.

• 15:17H. Foley?

Wow. All right. That's pretty good. And where did you go to school?

• 15:21Speaker 03

I went to college at Centenary College of Louisiana. It's in Shreveport. It's like two hours from where I grew up.

• 15:26H. Foley?

  Small school, private school?

• 15:28Speaker 03

Yeah, it's like a small Methodist school.

• 15:30H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 15:30Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, so that's where I, I studied.

• 15:32H. Foley?

Alright, so it's just the three. Is there extended family in the area? Like, on your mom's side or your dad's side?

• 15:38Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 15:38H. Foley?

So you got cousins, you got grandparents?

• 15:40Speaker 03

  Yeah, so-

• 15:41H. Foley?

  Everybody's around?

• 15:41Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, every, everybody is around. Had cousins, um, lived with my grandparents for a bit.

• 15:50H. Foley?

Let's get to that. When did, when did your parents split up?

• 15:52Speaker 03

Yeah, so they split up when I was like, yeah, around that time of, of my mom's surgery and everything. Yeah, so, so-

• 15:59H. Foley?

After the recovery? Or like, while it was going on?

• 16:02Speaker 03

It was, yeah, it was, it was kind of, it was kind of during and after, I suppose. And then, um, it was definitely after that it was, you know, like, official and stuff.

• 16:12H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 16:12Speaker 03

And, and then, um, we moved in with my grandparents, lived with them for a while.

• 16:18H. Foley?

  You and your mom?

• 16:19Speaker 03

Yeah, my mom and I. And, and so, I was basically around my mom, my aunt, my grandma, and my granddad.

• 16:26H. Foley?

  Wow.

• 16:27Speaker 03

For, you know, uh, like, yeah, majority of that junior high-

• 16:31H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 16:32Speaker 03

  High school stuff.

• 16:32H. Foley?

Was your dad still in the area?

• 16:33Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 16:34H. Foley?

  You would see him?

• 16:35Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, I'd still see him and everything. And then, um, yeah, and then when my mom and I moved out on, on our own and everything, that was like the rest of high school.

• 16:45H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 16:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 16:46H. Foley?

Okay. And then when did they get back together? Did they ever get back together?

• 16:49Speaker 03

Not, not again. So they, yeah, basically, they were together.

• 16:55H. Foley?

  Uh huh.

• 16:55Speaker 03

Um, and then I was born, and then maybe when I was like, two, they split up for a bit.

• 17:02H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 17:02Speaker 03

And then they got back together.

• 17:04H. Foley?

  When you were-

• 17:04Speaker 03

But then when I was like, maybe, it's hard, cause it's like a two-year process of like divorce.

• 17:11H. Foley?

  Sure.

• 17:12Speaker 03

So, it's hard to say like, I just kind of call it when it's final. So by the time I'm like 12 or 13-

• 17:17Speaker 00

This guy calls balls and strikes, dude.

• 17:18Speaker 03

  Yeah, it's just like-

• 17:19Speaker 00

He's like, "Once the state gets involved, that's when I, that's when I acknowledge it."

• 17:22Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, cause, cause-

• 17:24H. Foley?

That's still Commonwealth wife, I'm telling you right now!

• 17:26Speaker 03

Yeah, and, and so, by the time I was, yeah, in like junior high, and was like fully-

• 17:31Speaker 00

Official, they never got back together after that.

• 17:33H. Foley?

Okay, let's talk about Aura Frames.

• 17:34Speaker 00

Oh, shout out Aura Frames, dawg.

• 17:36H. Foley?

• 17:50H. Foley?

But I'll tell you what, you know, it's actually, it's actually great for dads, because what do dads love their grandkids doing? They wanna see them in sports.

• 17:57Speaker 00

  Playing ball.

• 17:58H. Foley?

• 18:54H. Foley?

Yeah. Kent, we gotta talk about Lucy.

• 18:56Speaker 00

  Oh, Lucy, Lucy, Lucy.

• 18:58H. Foley?

And I think it's safe to say, we are officially a Lucy family over here.

• 19:02Speaker 00

  You ain't lying, big dog.

• 19:03H. Foley?

And you know why? Cause they have so many fun products.

• 19:06Speaker 00

They got a lot, listen, they're in it, they got a lot of good stuff.

• 19:08H. Foley?

They got the Breakers, which has a little extra flavor, a little hydration, which you need when you, when you, when you're doing your nicotine. You know what I mean? Talking about 100% pure nicotine, Lucy Breakers are nicotine pouches with a little extra surprises, I said. Each pouch holds a capsule that contains, that when you prop it open, contains a little release of flavor, a little hydration. Set yourself up with a subscription, and Lucy can be delivered straight to your door.

• 19:30Speaker 00

Yeah, as the big man said, it's 100% pure nicotine, always tobacco-free, and that is important when you're searching for nicotine.

• 19:38H. Foley?

  What is this, the 50's?

• 19:39Speaker 00

I know. Uh, they were nice. Enough to send them to us. I mean, they, they, they, you know, God.

• 19:43H. Foley?

  The boys love them.

• 19:44Speaker 00

They laced up the boys, as the big man said, it's everyone's everywhere, everyone in the family is a, is a Lucy's man.

• 19:50H. Foley?

Reminds me, I gotta take a pack home.

• 19:52Speaker 00

Or lady. Uh, let's level up your nicotine routine with Lucy. Go to lucy.co slash garbage and use the promo code garbage. You get 20% off your first order. Lucy has a 30 day refund policy. Lucy products are only for adults of legal age and every order is age verified. Warning, this product contains nicotine. Nicotine is addictive, chemical. Now, back to the show.

• 20:17H. Foley?

Back to the show. So, but they're both still in the same hometown?

• 20:20Speaker 03

No, no. So my dad passed in 20.

• 20:22H. Foley?

  Sorry to hear that.

• 20:23Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. He, he passed in 20, um, uh, 16.

• 20:28H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 20:28Speaker 03

And my mom and the rest of my, like, uh, close family is over in Georgia now.

• 20:34H. Foley?

  They moved to Georgia?

• 20:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:35H. Foley?

Oh, is your mom retired or she's still working?

• 20:36Speaker 03

  No, she's, she's retired.

• 20:38H. Foley?

Gotcha. Okay. Good. Nice. Did she move with like the aunt and like everybody was in that house?

• 20:43Speaker 03

Yeah. So my, so my mom and my aunt are, uh, in, in Georgia and my granddad had also moved to Georgia. Um, after my grandma passed away. And, uh, yeah, he passed away a little, a little while back, but.

• 21:00H. Foley?

  I'm sorry.

• 21:00Speaker 03

Yeah, like 2021. But, uh, yeah, now my mom and my aunt are in Georgia. It's very easy to.

• 21:06H. Foley?

So that's home base now. When you go home, that's where you're going?

• 21:08Speaker 03

Yeah, it's a hub to a hub. So it's like, I live in New York and it's finally an easy flight to see my mom.

• 21:14Speaker 00

  What a comic at heart.

• 21:16H. Foley?

  That's crazy.

• 21:16Speaker 00

So up to a hub, that's an easy flight.

• 21:18Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah. I just.

• 21:20H. Foley?

Did a little crowd work, plus the website, I'm at it.

• 21:22Speaker 00

  That's the comic.

• 21:22Speaker 03

Yeah, you have, you have no idea the, the trials it would be to get home and like, and how expensive it would be. I was like, it would, it would be like, and this is, you know, I'm still working at the grocery store, stuff like that. This is when I'm like doing comedy, but I'm just doing open mics. It'd be like 650 to get home to a place that nobody's trying to get to.

• 21:40Speaker 00

Yeah, I know. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 21:41Speaker 03

It's like, how is it expensive to get here?

• 21:43Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 21:44H. Foley?

So you're out of there now. The family's out of there.

• 21:46Speaker 03

Uh, yeah, I still have some family there and I'll, I'll see them once in a while, but, but as far as like.

• 21:51H. Foley?

When you're going home, you're going to Georgia.

• 21:53Speaker 03

Yeah, for holidays, going to Georgia.

• 21:54Speaker 00

You touch, you touch it a little bit. What was the first job growing up?

• 21:58Speaker 03

I worked at a restaurant, Mexican restaurant.

• 22:01Speaker 00

  A Mexican restaurant?

• 22:02Speaker 03

  Yeah, when I was sixteen.

• 22:03Speaker 00

  Sixteen, waiting or bussing tables?

• 22:05Speaker 03

So, I started as a chip boy.

• 22:08H. Foley?

  What's a chip boy?

• 22:09Speaker 03

I brought the chips and salsa. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 22:12Speaker 00

That's a first. That was your only responsibility?

• 22:15Speaker 03

It was my main one, yeah. Yeah.

• 22:18H. Foley?

Couple of years, I'll be on salsa.

• 22:20Speaker 03

Cause to be fair, at the time, I was like, I was like, man, I got more potential than chips. But then...

• 22:27H. Foley?

Give me the guacamole, boss, I'm telling you, I can do it.

• 22:29Speaker 03

But then, looking back, and like, also, having to work with sixteen year olds when I was even eighteen, I was like, I understand why they just started on chips. Yeah, yeah.

• 22:38Speaker 00

Try not to screw this up, Johnson.

• 22:39Speaker 03

And then I started bussing tables after that. But like, soon after, to be fair, so it's like, chips was like...

• 22:46Speaker 00

  That's like your orientation.

• 22:48H. Foley?

Chips is a good place to start.

• 22:49Speaker 03

Yeah, chips was first week, and then after a week, they were like, alright, he's not like a complete...

• 22:54Speaker 00

  He's got chips a lot.

• 22:55Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, he understands chips and dip together to the table. And then I was bussing tables.

• 23:02Speaker 00

That's interesting, cause to me, it would go bussing...

• 23:04H. Foley?

  Then chips.

• 23:06Speaker 00

Anything, or anything with food is typically...

• 23:09Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:09Speaker 00

Would be above, but you guys are...

• 23:11Speaker 03

Not to make bussing tables sound more difficult than it is, but I have, in, in, not, not even in one restaurant, like, in many other restaurant situations, I've watched people bus tables in a way where I was like, oh, they need him doing something else.

• 23:26Speaker 00

He needs to be on chips.

• 23:27Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah, because like, I don't know, there's just...

• 23:30H. Foley?

Gonna put you on ice for a little while.

• 23:31Speaker 03

Yeah, take, take some care when you're stacking the plates and the cups, you know what I mean? I've just, I've watched, I've been at restaurants where people walk up and bust the table by sliding everything off with one arm. And I'm like, that's, that's a...

• 23:43Speaker 00

You've seen me bust tables before?

• 23:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 23:45Speaker 00

I've, dude, I remember the one time I put a glass, in a glass, it had too much liquid in it, and that overflowed, and this big waitress slipped on it, and I mean, it was, it was a scene in the, in the dining room.

• 23:57H. Foley?

  How was that Mexican restaurant?

• 23:59Speaker 03

  It was amazing.

• 24:00H. Foley?

  Really?

• 24:00Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 24:01H. Foley?

  No shit?

• 24:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 24:02H. Foley?

Alright, um, so that's, you're doing that in high school, were you playing any sports?

• 24:07Speaker 03

Uh, none well. I, I played, I played soccer when I was a, when I was really little. Uh, and I actually talk about it on, on stage sometimes about how I was part of like, a sort of like community intermural. You know those things where it's like, you're, no one, no one believes in these kids. Sure. Like these, you're, we are actually one step below Bad News Bears. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's more of a club. Yeah, so I was on one of those for baseball and I was on one of those for, uh, soccer. Gotcha. And baseball, I was somehow more, cause I had asthma growing up, so soccer was never gonna be like

• 24:48Speaker 03

the move. You know what I mean? Like, I couldn't outrun the condition. And then you would think baseball would be better since it's like More static. Slower. More static, less spurts of running. And then basically, uh, I, I have no...

• 25:05H. Foley?

Is that you? That's me, I'm sorry.

• 25:06Speaker 03

Yeah, no, you're okay, you're okay. You have an alarm for 1pm?

• 25:09H. Foley?

Yeah, because we were supposed to be here at 3. Or 2. I apologize.

• 25:14Speaker 03

No, you're good, you're good. Uh, so, baseball was somehow worse because I, I'm left-handed when I, when I, um, write and like even drawing, stuff like that. And I'm not even good at drawing, but I'm just left-handed. Sure. So you're left-handed? He's even criticizing himself. He's like, listen, I'm not that good. But, but then, when it comes to throwing a ball, I'm right-handed. What? But because I was little, I didn't know how to communicate any of that. And so then, the, the first day of like T-ball, they were like, which hand do you write with? That was like, that was like their question for like, what side they were gonna put you on and everything, which made sense for every single kid but me. Yeah.

• 25:55Speaker 03

And so then they put me on the wrong side to bat, the wrong side of a mitt and everything. And so then, the thing that made the most sense to me, as a, and I'm little, but this was still very dumb, is that if, uh, like a ball got hit by like one of the bigger kids with coordination, and it was going up in the air, it's coming at me in the outfield, cause they made me outfield because I was trash. Gotcha. I-

• 26:20Speaker 03

It made more sense to just go ahead and catch it with my right hand and then throw it with my right hand.

• 26:25Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 26:25Speaker 03

But because I told them that I was left-handed, there's also, like, they put the glove, they just, everything was messed up. And so then I would take off my glove to throw the ball.

• 26:37Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 26:38Speaker 03

And they'd be like, "What are you doing?" And then no one really put it together that it was like, oh, it's just, everything's on the wrong side.

• 26:46H. Foley?

So you might, you might have been in Special Ed.

• 26:48Speaker 03

I was in, I was in, like, like, Special Ed of sports.

• 26:52H. Foley?

  Special Ed sports.

• 26:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 26:54H. Foley?

  That's crazy.

• 26:55Speaker 03

  My PE was not impressive.

• 26:57H. Foley?

So is that because they, they trained you? Like, should you have had the glove, you should have had the glove on your right hand and you should have thrown left hand? Or is that naturally how you?

• 27:06Speaker 03

So from what I was told.

• 27:08H. Foley?

  That's nuts.

• 27:09Speaker 03

What I was told, which was loud, because I was very frustrating. Because I said that I write with my left hand, I should have been throwing with my left hand, putting the, like, the mitt on this hand.

• 27:20Speaker 00

But you throw with your right hand.

• 27:21Speaker 03

But I throw with my right hand, so I would try to catch it with this one, then take it off, then throw. And it was just, we were losing.

• 27:28H. Foley?

Like a guy with one arm.

• 27:30Speaker 00

Yeah, it's like those one-armed pitchers did.

• 27:32Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 27:33H. Foley?

How many, how many kids did you graduate with?

• 27:36Speaker 03

In elementary school? Oh, in high school?

• 27:38H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 27:40Speaker 03

  Jeez.

• 27:41H. Foley?

  Less than a couple hundred?

• 27:42Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:43H. Foley?

  Small town.

• 27:44Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, way less. I mean, I think 500 went to the whole school from, from 7th grade to...

• 27:49Speaker 00

  Probably 100 people.

• 27:50Speaker 03

  Yeah, probably 100 people.

• 27:51Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 27:52H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 27:52Speaker 00

And what was the name of that high school?

• 27:54Speaker 03

Uh, Holy Savior Menard. It was Catholic.

• 27:56Speaker 00

  Holy Savior Menard.

• 27:57H. Foley?

You went to a Catholic school?

• 27:58Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 27:58H. Foley?

  Very nice.

• 27:59Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:00H. Foley?

All right, good stuff. Uniform, the whole nine yards?

• 28:02Speaker 03

  Yeah, uniform, everything.

• 28:03H. Foley?

Go to, you had to go to church every week?

• 28:05Speaker 03

Uh, they had mass Wednesday mornings before classes started.

• 28:09H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 28:10Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:10H. Foley?

Gotcha. Ours was Thursday in elementary.

• 28:13Speaker 00

What was that high school mascot?

• 28:15Speaker 03

  Uh, an eagle.

• 28:16Speaker 00

Ooh, eagles are pretty good. What do you have over there, Dr. Lucas? They don't have a Wikipedia. Really? We do, we find out if the guest is notable alum on Wikipedia. Senatory College of Louisiana, he is. Notable alum.

• 28:28Speaker 03

Oh, sweet, sweet. Oh, it's all happening.

• 28:33Speaker 00

  Take that, T-ball coach.

• 28:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 28:35H. Foley?

How were the grades? I assume good?

• 28:38Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, I was really good, um, all the way up until about seventh grade, it was like, noth- nothing could touch me. And then, and then, at, at like, eighth grade, the math hit hard.

• 28:52Speaker 00

  That comes in quick, though.

• 28:53Speaker 03

And so, and so the math started, like, there was, there was a certain pieces of logic.

• 28:57H. Foley?

I always thought you were a genius.

• 28:59Speaker 03

  Yeah, I mean, I don't know, man, I'd like-

• 29:01Speaker 00

  Seventh grade?

• 29:02Speaker 03

  Dude-

• 29:02H. Foley?

I thought you were gonna say college.

• 29:04Speaker 03

No, no, no, so, eighth grade, eighth grade, the math hit hard. I was getting good grades and everything else. And then, my, I didn't have trouble again. Once I understood the algebra, I was fine until senior year. They put me in AP Biology. And that was too much, and I didn't wanna be in AP Biology, but I had, I basically, the, the way that my classes ran-

• 29:29H. Foley?

  Uh huh.

• 29:30Speaker 03

I had to basically be in the higher level of science, which I didn't even qualify for, just to make my schedule work. Which is insane, and-

• 29:38Speaker 00

Man, Dave, you've been getting, you've been getting applied wrong the whole, your whole, your whole life.

• 29:42Speaker 03

  Dude, the whole time, because-

• 29:43Speaker 00

They've been putting the glove on the wrong hand the whole time.

• 29:45Speaker 03

Even with, even with AP Biology, I told my teacher, I was like, "Hey, I'm really not supposed to be in here." The teacher went to the principal, was like, "Hey, you really not supposed to be in here."

• 29:55Speaker 03

And then the principal was like-

• 29:56H. Foley?

He's got a baseball glove on his foot.

• 29:57Speaker 03

"I don't, I don't know what to tell you." And then I even offered, I was like, "Look, I will come early, uh, like, I will come early every day just to study for the regular science class that the rest of the seniors are taking." "And then I'll just take those tests. Can I just do that?"

• 30:13Speaker 00

  Wow.

• 30:14Speaker 03

And, and they were like, "No." And I don't know if it's because they didn't believe I would do it, or if it was that old thinking, like, basically, what, what, in, in the same way that, like, COVID broke people's brains, it also opened up how many people were lying this entire time. Like, how many, how many places you've worked, where you're like, "Can I work from home?"

• 30:33Speaker 00

Like, "No, never, you can't do it."

• 30:34Speaker 03

"For this very special occasion, like, I'm literally sick, can I work from home?" I'll still work-

• 30:40Speaker 00

  I'll call in, I'll be-

• 30:41Speaker 03

"I'll throw up and work." And they're like, "No, it's just not sustainable." And it's like, "No, it was." And then, and then I offered to, like, I literally offered to come, like, come in so they could see me in the building, and just do all the reading, and so, I was like, "I'll do it in front of whoever, and just let me take the test." And they were like nah.

• 31:02Speaker 00

You're better than me. I got, dude, in eighth or ninth grade, I got put in special ed math and I didn't belong in it. And I took it as, I would keep my fucking mouth shut and just ride this out, take the easy A, you know what I mean?

• 31:14Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. So then that was like a C class for me.

• 31:18H. Foley?

  That's pretty good.

• 31:19Speaker 00

You got a grade, you gotta, you gotta curve for the AYG. I mean, a C is, as soon as you get to grade.

• 31:26H. Foley?

  I'm a moron.

• 31:27Speaker 03

  But no, I'm like.

• 31:28H. Foley?

I gotta, I gotta point to my freshman year of college.

• 31:31Speaker 03

  Really?

• 31:32H. Foley?

  Yeah, and I graduated.

• 31:33Speaker 00

He's the smartest in his family.

• 31:35H. Foley?

I gra- I graduated, I think, third or fourth last in my high school.

• 31:39Speaker 03

  Yeah, but graduated, graduate.

• 31:42Speaker 00

  Look at you now.

• 31:43Speaker 03

  You know what I mean?

• 31:43H. Foley?

No matter what hand the glove's on, baby.

• 31:45Speaker 03

They don't put a number over your head in the picture.

• 31:49Speaker 00

Great logic. That is sound logic.

• 31:52H. Foley?

  Ah, okay, alright.

• 31:53Speaker 00

I have, well, sorry, I have one more. Uh, who was the most, uh, famous person you met growing up? Was there, it could have been a local celebrity, a news guy, the pilot of the airplane, anybody that you were like, oh my god, there's so and so, a radio.

• 32:08Speaker 03

Okay, actually, if you, um, if you type in, uh, I think it's Faith Ford, and she's an actress, and I.

• 32:16Speaker 00

  Yes, Faith Ford, American actress.

• 32:18Speaker 03

Yeah, I, uh, served her chips and salsa.

• 32:24Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 32:24Speaker 03

Yeah, that was, that was huge. I was like, oh my gosh, that's wild.

• 32:27Speaker 00

Yeah, I remember her, okay. Born Alexandria, Louisiana.

• 32:32H. Foley?

  Look at that!

• 32:32Speaker 03

And so sweet, was so, was so, so nice. Yeah.

• 32:35H. Foley?

Look at that. That's, was she back in town seeing family or something?

• 32:39Speaker 03

  I think so.

• 32:41Speaker 00

What else do you think? Clearly that's a cheap shit.

• 32:43H. Foley?

Maybe she heard about the chips.

• 32:45Speaker 03

  Maybe, um.

• 32:47Speaker 00

What was she doing in her hometown?

• 32:48H. Foley?

You're living, you're, so, most of this time in high school, you're at your, you're at your grandparents, right?

• 32:53Speaker 03

A, a good portion, a good portion of it, and then, yeah, I think, maybe I, I don't, I'm trying to be fair about, let me see, I think it was. Probably in, yeah, like 10th grade or something, we.

• 33:07H. Foley?

Gotcha. What was, uh, what were the, what was the room arrangement at that grandparents' house?

• 33:12Speaker 03

Uh, so it would have been me and my mom sharing a room. And then my aunt in a room, my grandparents in a room. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 33:24H. Foley?

It's tough. You guys have dinner together and all that stuff?

• 33:27Speaker 03

Uh, yeah, yeah, we would have dinner together and everything.

• 33:29H. Foley?

  Who did the cooking?

• 33:30Speaker 03

My grandma did a lot of the cooking.

• 33:32H. Foley?

  Good?

• 33:32Speaker 03

And, yeah, phenomenal. Like, like in a, in a, in a way that's like, um, I don't even know how you would put this, but anybody who's had their grandparents cooking that's from, like, a certain time.

• 33:45H. Foley?

  Of course.

• 33:45Speaker 03

It's like, there is no recipe.

• 33:47H. Foley?

  Yeah.

• 33:48Speaker 03

It's like you were just alone in the house, and then there's this soup that's like phenomenal, that you, and you didn't write anything down on how to make it. So it's like, you know, towards, towards the last year of all of us living together, I think it was my mom or my aunt that asked my grandma to start like writing down a couple of these things. Yeah.

• 34:10H. Foley?

Just home runs. Yeah, it's my, my Anne-Marie Catherine's vegetable soup and rice pudding. It's like, it's, it's, it hits a nostalgic thing that you just can't.

• 34:19Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. I don't even know what's in it because it's like, you, you were sick before you ate it.

• 34:24H. Foley?

  Right, yeah, yeah.

• 34:26Speaker 03

And then you eat it, and then three coughs later, you're healed.

• 34:28H. Foley?

What was the vacations like? Were you guys going anywhere? Were you doing anything? Things were tight, I assume, in that period?

• 34:35Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, I, I think, okay, so at one point, my aunt had moved away.

• 34:41H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 34:41Speaker 03

And so when I was, I'm trying to even remember, I think I would have been like eight years old or something like that. My, my aunt moved to like Mesquite, Texas or something. And I was just like heartbroken. I was like, you can't leave. What are you doing?

• 34:57H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 34:58Speaker 03

And I'm sure that like was heartbreaking because she just, she was like, you know, we were always hanging out and stuff.

• 35:04H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 35:04Speaker 03

And so I know we went to visit her, I think about two times, and then she had moved back. It wa- like, she wasn't really gone that long in the grand scheme of things.

• 35:13H. Foley?

  Gotcha, huh?

• 35:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:14H. Foley?

  Gotcha. So, no real vacations?

• 35:16Speaker 03

  Uh...

• 35:17H. Foley?

  Disney World, the beach?

• 35:19Speaker 03

  Nah, nah, nah, nah.

• 35:20H. Foley?

  Nothing like that?

• 35:21Speaker 03

  Nah, nah, nah.

• 35:22H. Foley?

What were you doing in the summers? You were just working in the summers?

• 35:24Speaker 03

Yeah, once I was sixteen, I was like, working in the summers and in the, when I was little, before I was working during the summer, I was just like, um, at the library with, with my mom.

• 35:35H. Foley?

Were you reading at the library? Do you read a lot?

• 35:37Speaker 03

Yeah, I would read and I'd do a lot of the, uh, the stuff that my mom had planned at the library because she also became like, the youth coordinator.

• 35:45H. Foley?

  Ah, gotcha.

• 35:46Speaker 03

And everything, and so I was right around the age that it was all of a sudden like, uh, my mom was teaching at my school because I was at the age that she was pitching the events for.

• 35:56H. Foley?

Gotcha. So, you were helping her?

• 35:57Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 35:58H. Foley?

Good guy, man. Good guy. Um, alright, you got that, then you go to college.

• 36:04Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 36:05H. Foley?

What was the social scene like in high school? Did you have friends and all that stuff? Pretty tight group?

• 36:09Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, yeah, I ma- I made some good friends. The, the friends that I made in elementary school were like, um, my best friend I met when I was like, four.

• 36:20H. Foley?

  Love that. Still best friends?

• 36:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 36:22H. Foley?

Gotcha. Is he still back there?

• 36:24Speaker 03

Uh, no, no, he lives in LA now, but he actually di- like, directs my specials and stuff.

• 36:28H. Foley?

Ah, love this. There we go.

• 36:31Speaker 00

  There's so many comics.

• 36:32H. Foley?

Couple of small-town boys made good, baby.

• 36:34Speaker 00

Do well to bring their homies along. You love to see it.

• 36:36H. Foley?

Get your own chips and salsa. This kid's killing it.

• 36:39Speaker 03

And then, uh, and then basically, outside of that, I, yeah, I did have like, a core group of friends that I'd hang out with for, for the most part during school, and then a couple of people who I would hang out with that went to different schools.

• 36:52H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 36:52Speaker 03

But, yeah, there wasn't a huge amount. There, there was a, there, there was a slight amount for these periods of time that feel longer when you're a kid, but in, in retrospect were like, a month?

• 37:02Speaker 00

  I know.

• 37:02Speaker 03

Where you tried to have a different group of friends?

• 37:04Speaker 00

  Crazy.

• 37:05Speaker 03

But then you realize that they're like, out of their mind, or something?

• 37:09Speaker 00

Uh-huh. You're like, in the backseat of a car, like, what the hell am I doing here?

• 37:12H. Foley?

Any trouble, any trouble when you were a kid? Arrested, anything like that? No drinking? Nothing like that? No smoking doobies? No house parties? Anything like that?

• 37:20Speaker 03

No, no, like, I, I, I went to a, a few parties, but like, I didn't drink. And I feel like I missed, um, I missed out on like that, that curve of when you're supposed to drink.

• 37:34Speaker 00

  Gotcha.

• 37:34Speaker 03

Cause I was too scared of getting caught and getting in trouble.

• 37:37Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 37:37Speaker 03

  As a, as a kid.

• 37:39Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 37:39Speaker 03

And then I was like, I don't know, like, by college, I had the reputation for being sober. So then people would make me the designated everything. Except driver. Like, I was, I was like, not the driver, but they'd be like, oh yeah, just walk back with Josh, he's not drunk. Or like, you know, whatever. And so then I almost felt this weird responsibility, like I couldn't drink, cause now everyone. In fact, I was about to have my first drink in college. It was a real thought in my head, cause I was like, you know what, I'm 21, maybe, who knows, everyone seems to be having a good time. It, this, this drink at least smells delicious. Because a lot of alcohol also stank. And so I was like,

• 38:20Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 38:20Speaker 03

  Yeah, the, in my head.

• 38:21Speaker 00

  Stank real good, baby.

• 38:23Speaker 03

In my head, I was like, this stinks, so I don't know if I want, and then like, my friend's sick the next day, it just doesn't, I don't know. And, and so the only time I really thought like, maybe I'll have a drink, right? I was, I was in my, um, yeah, like junior year, I turned 21.

• 38:39Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 38:40Speaker 03

Uh, I was at my fraternity house.

• 38:42Speaker 00

Alright, in your fraternity, there you go.

• 38:43Speaker 03

Yeah, and, and I was, I was at my fraternity house, and then I'm standing outside, and I was like, yeah, you know, maybe. And then I turned, I turned around to go back inside the house, cause I was just chilling, you know, like, like, taking a break to myself and everything.

• 38:57Speaker 00

  Tornado, ripped the house apart.

• 38:59Speaker 03

As I turn around, this kid fell off the roof.

• 39:03Speaker 00

  That was me.

• 39:05Speaker 03

And like, fell off the roof in front of me so perfectly. And like, and he gets up, and like, gets up immediately, cause it's not like our, like, we, the lip of our roof was not high. And so, so.

• 39:16Speaker 00

  Still a roof.

• 39:17Speaker 03

  It's still a roof.

• 39:17Speaker 00

It's not, it's not the floor.

• 39:19Speaker 03

Gets up immediately, and it's like, ah, ah.

• 39:25Speaker 03

And like, I don't know what he had, I, I mean, he may have broken his forearm, I have no idea.

• 39:29Speaker 00

  I assume.

• 39:30Speaker 03

But he just gets up, and I was like, oh, yeah, maybe I'm good.

• 39:33Speaker 00

Yeah, maybe it's not for me.

• 39:36Speaker 03

And then I moved to Chicago, and I was like, too broke to like a new thing.

• 39:40Speaker 00

Gotcha. It's also, if you're on the fence about drinking, you go to Chicago and see those drunks, it's like, that's the last thing. That makes sense. Those guys are falling off roofs every day.

• 40:48H. Foley?

What was the first concert you went to?

• 40:51Speaker 03

It was a Ben Folds concert. What? Yeah, it was a Ben Folds concert as part of orientation in college. Yeah.

• 40:59H. Foley?

And you didn't get on a plane until you were 24?

• 41:01Speaker 03

  22.

• 41:02H. Foley?

  22?

• 41:03Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 41:03H. Foley?

  When'd you get your passport?

• 41:05Speaker 03

I got my passport when I was probably like 25.

• 41:10H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 41:11Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. I think I specifically...

• 41:15H. Foley?

  Were you going somewhere?

• 41:16Speaker 03

I got my passport because I was gonna go to JFL.

• 41:19Speaker 00

  Montreal.

• 41:20Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 41:21H. Foley?

  All right.

• 41:22Speaker 03

So that was like, that was when I was like, oh, I have to get it. The year when I, I think I auditioned for JFL like two, three times or something like that. And the first year, it was like such a long shot because even me getting an audition was late. And so I didn't even bother because I was like, all right, maybe, well, you know, we'll see. And then I didn't get it anyway.

• 41:43H. Foley?

Did you end up eventually going? Did you do JFL?

• 41:45Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 41:45H. Foley?

I thought so. All right. You're just an all-around good guy. It's crazy.

• 41:50Speaker 00

  What was your first car?

• 41:52Speaker 03

  Oh, I can't drive.

• 41:54Speaker 00

  I had a, I, I, I felt that way.

• 41:56Speaker 03

Yeah, no, I can't drive at all.

• 41:58Speaker 00

A guy who's like, I, he, you know, he just don't, yeah.

• 42:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 42:02Speaker 00

I could feel that in your bones.

• 42:04H. Foley?

He's got the glove on his right hand.

• 42:07Speaker 00

  He's driving in a backseat.

• 42:09Speaker 03

  Dude, I cannot drive.

• 42:10H. Foley?

I fucking knew you were gonna say that.

• 42:11Speaker 03

I would kill so many people.

• 42:13H. Foley?

I knew you were gonna say that.

• 42:14Speaker 03

Yeah, no, no, no, no, no.

• 42:15H. Foley?

  You never got your license.

• 42:17Speaker 03

My, my driving test was such a disaster that the dude made me stop.

• 42:24Speaker 00

No shit. How old were you?

• 42:25Speaker 03

  Yeah, I was, I was 16.

• 42:27Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 42:28Speaker 03

I may have taken it, I think, yeah, I took it, what, one more time? And then I was like, guys, I'm good. I like.

• 42:35Speaker 00

Just this ain't for me. This and drinking ain't for me.

• 42:38Speaker 03

Yeah, I moved to Chicago so I could take the train.

• 42:40Speaker 00

  Really?

• 42:41Speaker 03

Yeah, so I was like, they have a good public transit system. In Louisiana, I had to run.

• 42:46Speaker 00

You could also walk. You'd have to run everywhere.

• 42:49Speaker 03

Well, no, I had, I had to run because I was not like an early riser. I wasn't like a morning person. So I would run to the restaurant. And the restaurant was like three miles from my house.

• 42:58H. Foley?

What, you were walking to work?

• 43:00Speaker 03

  Yeah, like.

• 43:01Speaker 00

  That's like parolee type shit.

• 43:03H. Foley?

Here comes that Johnson kid again.

• 43:06Speaker 00

  Yeah, he's late again.

• 43:07Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 43:08H. Foley?

Those chips wait for nobody, I'll tell you that.

• 43:10Speaker 03

Because I don't know if you, yeah, I don't, I don't know if y'all had this, but we had it to where the, we had the service road, we had the highway, and then we had the street.

• 43:19Speaker 00

Yeah, no, we don't have real little service roads up here.

• 43:21Speaker 03

And basically, I, you, if you, depending on where you were going, you had to run in and out of the ditches?

• 43:28Speaker 00

  No.

• 43:29Speaker 03

  Oh, okay.

• 43:30H. Foley?

  That's what you were doing?

• 43:31Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, it's, I mean, if you had to cross, yeah, there's no, there's, admittedly, I went from a place where I couldn't drive but was almost exclusively a driving city.

• 43:42H. Foley?

  Of course.

• 43:43Speaker 03

To a place where I could walk.

• 43:45H. Foley?

So you were walking to work three miles a day, or running to work three miles a day?

• 43:48Speaker 03

Yeah, and it wasn't every day, because once the family who owned the restaurant found out that I was, uh, like, like running to work, they, they would offer me rides.

• 43:58Speaker 00

Dude, running to work is crazy.

• 44:00Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 44:01H. Foley?

You're that kid. You're the guy that they buy the car for and it's out in the parking lot with the big bow.

• 44:05Speaker 00

  And he's going, I can't drive, I can't drive.

• 44:07Speaker 03

No, no, no, don't do this, don't do this. You'll kill everyone. We're all gonna die.

• 44:11H. Foley?

Some Dodge Neon with a big bow on it?

• 44:13Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 44:14Speaker 00

And he's going, ah shit, no, no, no.

• 44:16H. Foley?

  Jesus, dude?

• 44:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:18H. Foley?

Oh, man, this is a, this is a strange mix.

• 44:21Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 44:21H. Foley?

  This is crazy.

• 44:23Speaker 00

Growing up, at any point, did your family keep the batteries in the refrigerator?

• 44:28Speaker 03

  Hmm. Hmm.

• 44:29Speaker 00

  It's probably not.

• 44:30Speaker 03

Are we talking like an Alzheimer's situation?

• 44:31Speaker 00

  No.

• 44:33H. Foley?

It keeps, it keeps them working.

• 44:35Speaker 00

No, there's a urban legend that it keeps them working, an old lifestyle that it keeps them fresher.

• 44:38Speaker 03

No, no, no, but I remember a neighbor that I had tried to explain to me how to forge stamps.

• 44:48Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 44:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:49Speaker 00

I mean, well, I mean, back then, they gotta be what, 29 cents?

• 44:52Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, but he was like, no, just-

• 44:54Speaker 00

That's like making a fake quarter, what's the-

• 44:56H. Foley?

First of all, I don't know what one has to do with the other, but I like where this is going.

• 44:59Speaker 03

Well, no, I just, I'm, I'm, I'm saying I was living in proximity to people who were probably putting their batteries in the fridge.

• 45:06Speaker 00

  He moves quick up there.

• 45:07Speaker 03

  I'm just-

• 45:08Speaker 00

That's why the kid's good. He goes, "No."

• 45:10H. Foley?

  If that answers your question.

• 45:11Speaker 00

But if the guy's trying to teach me how to forge stamps, he's for sure keeping his batteries in the fridge.

• 45:15Speaker 03

Yeah, I'm clearly not in the best situation.

• 45:16Speaker 00

  Jesus.

• 45:18Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. Cause he was like, "No, all you gotta do, like, everybody," and he was really doing it-

• 45:23Speaker 00

How many letters are you mailing that that's gonna make a, you know?

• 45:26Speaker 03

  Like, one?

• 45:27Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 45:28Speaker 03

Yeah, but he was like, he was like, "Nah, nah," like, he was, you know, he was in that entrepreneurial mindset.

• 45:35H. Foley?

  Guy's a hustler, I don't have to think.

• 45:36Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, it is-

• 45:37H. Foley?

  It's a startup going.

• 45:38Speaker 03

It is insane that the people, like, when you look at, whether it's like an Elon Musk or, uh, like a Sam Altman or something like that, it's crazy that the most, uh, the, the richest people have the same ideas-

• 45:54Speaker 00

  Mentality, yeah.

• 45:55Speaker 03

As the brokest people you've ever met. Cause like, cause like, so many of the things that I hear come out of their mouths, especially like a lot of the technocrats and stuff like that, of like a better world or like a, like a, a future towards AI or something like that, is everything that I heard my pothead friends say in college that are truly doing nothing right now.

• 46:16H. Foley?

  This guy can forge stamps.

• 46:17Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, and so, so my thing is, is- To tell me another kid, cause it was a kid.

• 46:25H. Foley?

I thought it was an old man.

• 46:27Speaker 03

No, no, it was another kid that lived next to me that was like, that was like, "Ay, you know, a lot of people buy stamps to the post office like some suckers."

• 46:37Speaker 00

  Not me.

• 46:38Speaker 03

All you gotta do is put where you wanted to go as the return address.

• 46:43Speaker 00

  Ah, yeah.

• 46:44Speaker 03

So he was just mailing wrong.

• 46:45H. Foley?

  Oh my god, that's funny.

• 46:46Speaker 03

And it was getting to where, yeah.

• 46:48Speaker 00

It's the same kid who thinks if you jump out of the plane and run the other way, you'll be alright.

• 46:52H. Foley?

That's funny. Alright, let's talk about now a little bit. Things are going extremely well.

• 46:57Speaker 03

  Oh, thanks, man.

• 46:58Speaker 00

  Can I borrow 500 dollars?

• 47:00H. Foley?

Have you always been smart with money? Have you always been a saver?

• 47:03Speaker 03

Uh, I've always been scared with money. So, yeah, I guess, I guess that's like the same thing.

• 47:07H. Foley?

Alright, so when you, when you started getting, you know, when, when you're doing the Daily Show, when, you know, the tickets start going, you're doing very well, was there a silly purchase? Is anything, did, did you splurge on anything?

• 47:18Speaker 00

  You looked back.

• 47:19H. Foley?

  Do you splurge on anything?

• 47:20Speaker 00

I didn't need that. It could have been a expensive piece of clothing.

• 47:22H. Foley?

Or you keep it all, you keep it all in the bank?

• 47:23Speaker 03

  Um...

• 47:24H. Foley?

  And live modestly?

• 47:26Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, I try to like live modestly. Like, I don't really buy that much stuff. I like, I like, everything that I buy is pretty cheap luckily.

• 47:34H. Foley?

Okay. What's the apartment sitch right now?

• 47:37Speaker 03

Um, I, I'm moved into a place with, uh, with my girlfriend. We've been living together for a long time.

• 47:43H. Foley?

  Love that.

• 47:44Speaker 03

Moved into a new place, so that's probably the first big, like, different thing that I've done.

• 47:48H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 47:48Speaker 03

But I guess that first, like, paycheck, like, when I got the, um, pay for my special, like, that first one that I did, um, I saved as much of it as I could, and then I, like, used the rest to pay off my mom's house. And so then that way, but it's, but it's...

• 48:08H. Foley?

  Fucking kid.

• 48:09Speaker 03

But it's better because it's like...

• 48:11Speaker 00

He's gotta take care of you. You say, "Start taking lessons from him. What the fuck are you doing?"

• 48:18Speaker 03

But it's better because it's like, then she doesn't have to worry about, you know, more of your stuff.

• 48:24Speaker 00

You're thinking about other people, not yourself.

• 48:25H. Foley?

I got coke and a big screen TV.

• 48:28Speaker 03

But yeah, I just don't really, uh, I'm not into that much stuff that costs anything.

• 48:34Speaker 00

  Sharp. I like it.

• 48:35Speaker 03

But, but it's like, you know, I, I will probably one day, my hope is to have like a real, like... Classic library of comic books, like I don't, I don't necessarily splurge on the ones that are like novelty, the old, like the old first issue Spider-Man stuff I don't really buy. But I buy a lot of like Ed Brubaker, like Ed Brubaker's my favorite, like.

• 48:58Speaker 00

  What's that cost you?

• 48:58H. Foley?

This is, this is the sweetest thing I've ever heard, by the way.

• 49:01Speaker 00

  What's like inexpensive, I don't know, you're, I'm, I'm.

• 49:03Speaker 03

If you get the omnibus, like if you get the full story, then it's probably like fifty bucks.

• 49:08Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 49:08Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, it might, might run you, if it's like, if it's like a DC Marvel thing, it'll probably run you eighty, but yeah.

• 49:14H. Foley?

You got cash, get him, what are you doing?

• 49:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:17H. Foley?

What's the apartment? Did you buy it? Did you, are you renting it?

• 49:20Speaker 03

Oh no, I'm just renting right now.

• 49:21H. Foley?

  You're renting?

• 49:22Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 49:23H. Foley?

  Alright, in the city?

• 49:24Speaker 03

Uh, no, no, I'm in Brooklyn.

• 49:26H. Foley?

  You're in Brooklyn?

• 49:26Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 49:27H. Foley?

Alright, okay. He's sharp, man. He's a good guy.

• 49:32Speaker 00

You are going to cause an existential crisis for the big man.

• 49:36H. Foley?

You're just a better human being than I am, it's crazy. That's why I love you, though.

• 49:41Speaker 00

What, um, what's like if you go out, you know, say it's your lady's birthday or so, and you're like gonna take her out to dinner, do you like a nice dinner, or do you go, and you splurge in there at all, or no, just kinda something a little more reserved?

• 49:51Speaker 03

No, no, I mean, if, I, I like, um, I like the idea of, um, like an experience for, for her, or like a nice dinner for her, or something like that. Um, for me, maybe, maybe food is where I splurge a little bit, just cause I try to, I try to like eat well.

• 50:07Speaker 00

You're talking to two fat guys.

• 50:08H. Foley?

Common ground, like you try to eat well?

• 50:10Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 50:11H. Foley?

  Like, good, like.

• 50:12Speaker 03

  Like, like, healthy.

• 50:13H. Foley?

  Oh.

• 50:13Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 50:14Speaker 00

That's another thing we'll get into another episode.

• 50:17Speaker 03

But yeah, sometimes you'll, you know, like, like if you go to, like a good example is like Katsunori, you know, the, the hand roll place?

• 50:25H. Foley?

  Of course.

• 50:26Speaker 03

It's like, yeah, if you, if you go there, that is, depending on how much you end up eating, that is expensive.

• 50:31H. Foley?

  Uh huh.

• 50:31Speaker 03

Um, but yeah, that'll probably like, you know, that's like fifty bucks.

• 50:36H. Foley?

But normally you eat pretty well, you keep, keep it tight at the house?

• 50:39Speaker 03

I, yeah, I try to as best I can, yeah.

• 50:41H. Foley?

  Are you working out?

• 50:42Speaker 00

You just dropped a fifty dollar dinner in your life.

• 50:46Speaker 00

  Yeah, that'll breakfast.

• 50:49Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, yeah. I mean, or if it's like, if it's someone's birthday, that's when I'll like really splurge. Like, so, so for instance, like, like, um, I had the shows in London.

• 50:59Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 50:59Speaker 03

And they fell on my girlfriend's birthday.

• 51:02Speaker 00

  Beautiful.

• 51:02Speaker 03

And so she came and, um, she came to London and everything, and then we had a big dinner with everybody that came out.

• 51:08Speaker 00

  Very nice.

• 51:09Speaker 03

So like, uh, every, you know, everybody came and that was really special, so I took care of that.

• 51:15H. Foley?

  What'd you drop on dinner?

• 51:17Speaker 03

  Um.

• 51:18Speaker 00

  Two grand.

• 51:19H. Foley?

  Three grand.

• 51:20Speaker 03

  I think it was.

• 51:21H. Foley?

  Seventy-five.

• 51:24Speaker 03

That would have been great if it had been fifty pounds. Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, at the, I, I don't know what the conversion is, but at the end of the, um, at the end of the dinner for everybody was like nine thirty-two or something like that.

• 51:38Speaker 00

  Nine hundred and thirty-two.

• 51:39Speaker 03

  Nine hundred and thirty-two pounds.

• 51:40Speaker 00

Pounds. Yeah, so probably fifteen, something like that.

• 51:42Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 51:43Speaker 00

  Around there.

• 51:43H. Foley?

That's not, this kid's killing it. We gotta, hey, we gotta spend some of his cash. This is crazy.

• 51:52Speaker 00

  Uh, okay.

• 51:54H. Foley?

  What about in the apartment?

• 51:55Speaker 00

Hold on, sorry. What about a vacation? Where you treat, you're working hard, you're flying all over to, all over the Korea, all over the world.

• 52:01H. Foley?

You and the lady go down to the islands or go to the beach?

• 52:03Speaker 03

  Um, yeah, I mean.

• 52:05Speaker 00

Tony Island. Take, take the G train all the way to the end.

• 52:08Speaker 03

Yeah, I will, I'll, I'll take like, um, a vacation if my, if, if my girlfriend wants to go somewhere, then I'm like happy to go there and everything, but I don't really.

• 52:17Speaker 00

You're not chomping at the bit to?

• 52:19Speaker 03

No, no, I don't really take vacations in that way.

• 52:23H. Foley?

Where would she, where, where have you taken her? Where would she, where does she want to go?

• 52:26Speaker 03

Like after London, we went to Spain.

• 52:28Speaker 00

  Beautiful.

• 52:28H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 52:29Speaker 03

San Sebastian for like three, three, four nights.

• 52:32H. Foley?

All right. You're taking care of all this? You got her?

• 52:34Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 52:35H. Foley?

  What does she do?

• 52:36Speaker 03

Uh, so she works at a media company and she's like, uh, publisher for the media company. She helps launch.

• 52:44H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 52:44Speaker 03

Like brand deals and stuff like that.

• 52:45H. Foley?

And where did you guys meet? Did you guys meet here?

• 52:47Speaker 03

  Yeah, we met here.

• 52:48H. Foley?

Okay, and you've been dating for a while?

• 52:49Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 52:51Speaker 00

  Beautiful.

• 52:51H. Foley?

  So, alright.

• 52:53Speaker 00

I was gonna ask you if you ever owned a switchblade, but I don't think yeah.

• 52:56H. Foley?

What about in the apartment? Did you splurge on like a sectional or the TV? Are you a gamer? Do you play video games?

• 53:03Speaker 03

I play video games, but not, I'm not great at it. I really am just like

• 53:08H. Foley?

  I'm stunned.

• 53:09Speaker 03

Getting the VR stuff. I'm into the VR.

• 53:12Speaker 00

  Get into VR.

• 53:13Speaker 03

So, I will buy, like I have an Oculus 2, but I haven't bought the new one yet, so I'm like saving up to buy the new one.

• 53:21H. Foley?

Saving up? What are you talking about? Saving up?

• 53:27H. Foley?

What? You haven't posted a video on YouTube that did under 2 million views in like the last 8 months?

• 53:34Speaker 00

He's trying to wrap his, well, this is like, again, polar opposites. This is a guy who's spent every dollar he's ever made.

• 53:41H. Foley?

900 pounds? What are you doing?

• 53:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 53:44Speaker 00

Ask him how much he spent on Yankees tickets.

• 53:46Speaker 03

Yeah, no, I, so I bought my aunt a house.

• 53:50H. Foley?

  Oh my god.

• 53:51Speaker 00

He's just making you look bad.

• 53:54Speaker 03

Why, why does he make you feel bad?

• 53:55H. Foley?

  Because you're fucking awesome.

• 53:57Speaker 00

Because he just called our business manager yesterday to get paid early because he needs the money.

• 54:02H. Foley?

Alright, so he can put my business app back for it.

• 54:05Speaker 03

But yeah, so I'm just like, yeah, I'm trying to be.

• 54:08H. Foley?

So you bought your, the one that moved to Mesquite?

• 54:11Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 54:11H. Foley?

So you bought her a house?

• 54:12Speaker 00

She's in Georgia, they're all in Georgia.

• 54:13H. Foley?

They're in Georgia. Are they near each other?

• 54:15Speaker 03

  Yeah, they're close, yeah.

• 54:16H. Foley?

So you bought, so you paid off your mom's house in Georgia, and you bought your aunt a house in Georgia?

• 54:21Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 54:21H. Foley?

And they're chilling? And that's your, that's your tight immediate family?

• 54:25Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 54:28H. Foley?

  I mean dude, you're, that's the fucking, that's unbelievable.

• 54:31Speaker 03

  Oh, thanks man.

• 54:32H. Foley?

You know that, right? That's the sweetest thing I've ever heard.

• 54:34Speaker 00

  Very, yeah.

• 54:34Speaker 03

  Yeah, I mean, I don't know.

• 54:35H. Foley?

Do you own the house, or does she own the house?

• 54:37Speaker 03

Uh, I own the house, yeah, yeah.

• 54:40H. Foley?

  Alright, there we go.

• 54:41Speaker 03

  Yeah. Um...

• 54:43H. Foley?

So you own some property, so you, so you have, man, you have spent the money that you're making, but just in a very good way, and smart way.

• 54:51Speaker 03

Oh, I hope so, yeah, that, that's the, that's the plan.

• 54:55Speaker 00

Somebody splurged, he said $50 comic books, and I don't think he's, I don't even think he's really, like, yeah.

• 54:59H. Foley?

A $900 dinner. How many people were at that dinner?

• 55:02Speaker 03

  Um, maybe it was 10?

• 55:04H. Foley?

  10?

• 55:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:06H. Foley?

It's like sixty bucks a head. I thought you were gonna say nine grand.

• 55:10Speaker 00

That's not, that's not that math either, but...

• 55:15Speaker 00

That's pretty easy to divide by ten, just saying.

• 55:17H. Foley?

You won't find me in AP Biology.

• 55:19Speaker 00

I think, I think we're getting to the root of your problem over here. Four million dollars, that's like ten dollars!

• 55:25H. Foley?

Alright, let's go into the house a little bit. Um, some garbage things. See if we can find a little dirt under these fingernails. Are you peeing in the shower?

• 55:33Speaker 03

  Nah, nah nah nah.

• 55:34Speaker 00

You brush your teeth in the shower?

• 55:36Speaker 03

Nah, then you gotta spit on your feet.

• 55:39Speaker 00

  I've never heard that logic.

• 55:41H. Foley?

Are you using a bar soap or using body wash?

• 55:43Speaker 03

I use the body wash, yeah.

• 55:44H. Foley?

And do you use it hand on skin, or do you have like a loofah or something?

• 55:48Speaker 03

Uh, so we have both, so yeah, sometimes, it depends. It's like, if I'm, if I'm chilling, if I have to like be anywhere...

• 55:55H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 55:55Speaker 03

Then, uh, sometimes it's just like regular washcloth, you know? And then if it's like, um, I'm in a rush, it's the...

• 56:03H. Foley?

It's the loofah. Are you flossing every day?

• 56:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:06H. Foley?

Brush your teeth in the morning and at night?

• 56:08Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 56:08H. Foley?

No kidding. You read before you go to bed?

• 56:11Speaker 03

I try to, but yeah, I don't really get to it often.

• 56:14H. Foley?

Are you on your phone when you go to bed?

• 56:16Speaker 03

I'm usually on my phone, like, but I'll, I guess, I guess I am reading, but I'm, but I'm reading on my phone, which is not the same energy. Like, it actually keeps you awake.

• 56:25Speaker 00

Yeah, but the blue light again.

• 56:27Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah.

• 56:27H. Foley?

King size bed, queen size bed?

• 56:30Speaker 03

Um, so yeah, we had a queen for a long time, and now we have a king.

• 56:34H. Foley?

  Nice.

• 56:34Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 56:36H. Foley?

Letting your hair down a little bit.

• 56:38Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:38H. Foley?

Uh, how do you, what are you sleeping? Boxers? Your pajamas?

• 56:43Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, I sleep in my pajamas, yeah.

• 56:46H. Foley?

  Did you wear pajamas?

• 56:47Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, I got my like sweatpants on that I would work out in, they like double up, it's like...

• 56:53H. Foley?

  But not actual pajamas?

• 56:54Speaker 03

No, not like a onesie. Not like, not like a...

• 56:58Speaker 00

You two are from, being from a different planet.

• 57:00H. Foley?

I pictured, dude, I pictured him with like, he would put on like the, the pajama shirt, the pajama pants...

• 57:05Speaker 00

  He's not splurging for pajamas.

• 57:06Speaker 03

Yeah, no, no, pajamas for me is just a short sleeve shirt and the sweatpants.

• 57:11H. Foley?

  Gotcha.

• 57:12Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 57:12H. Foley?

  Are you a slippers man?

• 57:15Speaker 03

No, actually, I wanna be, but I

• 57:18H. Foley?

  I think I

• 57:19Speaker 03

  My feet sweat.

• 57:20Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 57:21Speaker 03

So it's like, I can't, I can't get it the way that I wanna get, like, I've, I've tried twice, and I've ruined two pairs of slippers.

• 57:28H. Foley?

Are you sleeping on your side? Or back?

• 57:31Speaker 03

I try so hard to sleep on my back, but I turn.

• 57:34H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 57:34Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 57:35H. Foley?

Are you hugging a pillow? You got one between your legs, one on the head? How many pillows are you operating with?

• 57:39Speaker 03

Is that, is that like a normal thing that people hug the pillow?

• 57:42Speaker 00

  Yeah.

• 57:43Speaker 03

  Really?

• 57:43Speaker 00

Mm-hmm. You don't hug? You're not, you're not spooning a pillow at all?

• 57:46Speaker 03

No. Wait, what? It's getting bulletproof.

• 57:49Speaker 00

  I know.

• 57:49Speaker 03

Is that, that, that, y'all aren't messing with me?

• 57:52Speaker 00

No, I mean, between your legs is for

• 57:55Speaker 03

  Like a back problem?

• 57:56Speaker 00

  Pregnant women and larger guys.

• 57:57H. Foley?

  Heavier gentleman.

• 57:58Speaker 00

  (laughing)

• 57:59H. Foley?

So when you sleep on your side, you have one pillow, you have one pillow behind your head and you sleep on your side?

• 58:03Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 58:05H. Foley?

Do you have a ceiling fan? Is there a fan going?

• 58:07Speaker 03

  No, no ceiling fan.

• 58:09H. Foley?

You fall asleep with the TV on?

• 58:11Speaker 03

No, not anymore. Like I did when I was a kid.

• 58:14Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 58:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 58:15Speaker 00

Keep, that keeps the scaries out.

• 58:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 58:17Speaker 00

Um, hmm. You cooking at the house?

• 58:21Speaker 03

I can't cook well, so I, so I have, I have a couple of things I can make, and then that's about it.

• 58:25Speaker 00

What do you, what can you make?

• 58:26Speaker 03

Um, I, I do some like nice omelets and everything, stuff that's like not that difficult. I'll do, uh, like, uh, special little taco mix and everything, like cook up the ground beef and season it pretty well, and then, it's like very simple stuff. Literally enough to keep you alive.

• 58:43H. Foley?

On the regular, is that what you're doing, or do you guys order in?

• 58:46Speaker 03

No, so in the move, I've had to order more just because I'm not around as much, so it's like I'm, I'm touring on the weekend, and then I have daily show during the week.

• 58:57H. Foley?

  Of course.

• 58:57Speaker 03

And then I get home, and, yeah, there's not, there's not always enough time, so.

• 59:02H. Foley?

What would be a typical dinner?

• 59:04Speaker 03

  Um...

• 59:04H. Foley?

For you and the misses, right? You guys would, she'd get home from work, you guys would order dinner. What would you normally get?

• 59:09Speaker 03

Uh, there is a phenomenal place in, in, in Brooklyn, uh, called Warud.

• 59:15H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 59:15Speaker 03

And it is like a Asian Mexican fusion place. And so they have tacos. They're like grilled shrimp or chicken mole. But they might have, they might have it spiced in a way that you wouldn't find like traditional Mexican place. Uh, they also have these like, like ramen bowls that are, I don't even know what you would, would call it exactly. But yeah, they have these like salmon bowls and everything. So I get that a lot.

• 59:40H. Foley?

  Okay, tacos, ramen.

• 59:41Speaker 03

Yeah, especially once I get back into town. Like if I just flew back in and everything, I don't really have the energy to cook. So.

• 59:48H. Foley?

Gotcha. You doing smoothies during the day?

• 59:51Speaker 03

Uh, yeah, yeah. I'll, I'll try to either do a juice or a smoothie, but mostly try to drink a lot of water.

• 59:56H. Foley?

Drink a lot of water. You don't really eat breakfast and stuff like that.

• 59:59Speaker 03

I was for a while. For a while I was very good about like kickstarting the meals and everything. Cause I was just like, I was on, um, like a real mission to be like, uh, um, a certain, I don't know, like a certain weight and a certain level of strength that I lost before the, like right before the pandemic.

• 1:00:19H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 1:00:20Speaker 03

So in 2019 was probably like the biggest I've ever been and I was the fittest I had ever been.

• 1:00:25H. Foley?

  Huh.

• 1:00:25Speaker 03

And I was like doing, uh, really well in the, in the gym and I felt really good. And I kept up with it as best as I could into COVID, but then by not having access to a gym, it just all started to be like, calisthenics, which is fine, but in, and then once things actually took off.

• 1:00:42H. Foley?

Exercise. Calisthenics. I haven't heard that since.

• 1:00:46Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:49H. Foley?

I mean. You try to keep up with it. You bite your fingernails?

• 1:00:52Speaker 03

  No, no, no.

• 1:00:53H. Foley?

  Do you get manicures?

• 1:00:55Speaker 03

No, does it look like I?

• 1:00:56H. Foley?

  No, they're just.

• 1:00:57Speaker 03

Oh, no, I just, I didn't know if it was a question or because you looked at my fingers right before. So I was like, that's, like that felt like you were gonna, I wonder if he's gonna lie to me. Do you get manicures? Like you were looking right at my hands. No, I don't, I don't.

• 1:01:10H. Foley?

  You just clip them?

• 1:01:11Speaker 03

  Yeah, I just clip them.

• 1:01:12H. Foley?

Throw them out. You don't throw them behind the couch or anything like that?

• 1:01:16Speaker 03

No, no, no, no, no, no, no.

• 1:01:18H. Foley?

  This guy's good.

• 1:01:19Speaker 00

That's what... They're all that, this guy's good.

• 1:01:22Speaker 03

That's wild. Cause even if I threw him behind the couch, I still live there. Like, they're gonna come to roost one day.

• 1:01:28Speaker 00

Sure, and they do. Your wife will find them.

• 1:01:32Speaker 00

Now, let's go back to you. You're ordering that takeout, you get the tacos seasoned differently. That gets delivered or picked up, whatever. You get back to the house, it's in the container. Are you putting that on a plate and eating it, or are you eating it out of the container it came in?

• 1:01:43Speaker 03

Oh, that's a great question. So, it is a, it depends on what I order.

• 1:01:48Speaker 00

  Uh huh.

• 1:01:49Speaker 03

So, sometimes, when you order something, like, let's say, there's a place, um, I'm trying to remember what their, what their name is, cause they, cause they're phenomenal. There's another place in Brooklyn with like an agnolotti that's really good.

• 1:02:01Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 1:02:02Speaker 03

And, I've tried to put it in a bowl, and, you know, get, get all the sauce out and everything like that. And it is just not the same.

• 1:02:11Speaker 00

  Doesn't hit the same.

• 1:02:12Speaker 03

It's not, it's not, even when it's hot, even when I get it immediately, and that's the first thing that I do. Not even putting it in the microwave or anything. I'm like, now I'm gonna eat it like this.

• 1:02:19H. Foley?

  That's a very interesting point.

• 1:02:21Speaker 03

It does not, there's some things, and it's probably because we're eating out of black plastic that isn't meant to go in the human body, but there are some things where, if you have a specific sauce, or like a roux, that something is sitting in.

• 1:02:36Speaker 00

  A roux.

• 1:02:37Speaker 03

  It's...

• 1:02:37Speaker 00

  Guys getting rues.

• 1:02:38Speaker 03

It's not, it's, it's not gonna be the same.

• 1:02:40Speaker 00

It needs to be in that order, that order of operations.

• 1:02:41Speaker 03

It needs to be in the order it was dropped in right after it was cooked.

• 1:02:44Speaker 00

  I completely agree.

• 1:02:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:02:45Speaker 00

This guy's all fucking class. I got nothing to say. I got no other questions.

• 1:02:48H. Foley?

That was walking in both worlds. That appeals to my trashy, fat guy nature, what you're saying. But it's also very thought out, correct, and...

• 1:02:57Speaker 00

He said roux, you would've said gravy or something.

• 1:03:02Speaker 00

I mean, the kid's, the kid is all class.

• 1:03:04Speaker 03

Uh, I mean, if we're trying to find some, some trash, I can, okay, let me see, the...

• 1:03:09Speaker 00

  What?

• 1:03:10Speaker 03

Can you type in, okay, actually, no, no, I'll type it in because if it's, if it's too hard...

• 1:03:16Speaker 00

  Just close out the show.

• 1:03:17Speaker 03

If it's too hard to find, then I don't wanna...

• 1:03:19H. Foley?

He murdered six people in there.

• 1:03:21Speaker 00

It's just a picture of a bunch of bodies. Oh yeah, this was me, by the way. Okay, I mean, listen.

• 1:03:26H. Foley?

Are you a cologne guy? Use cologne?

• 1:03:28Speaker 03

No, no, I don't really go for it that much.

• 1:03:31H. Foley?

Any jewelry, chains, anything like that? You like a watch?

• 1:03:33Speaker 03

I'm pretty robable, so I've let, I've let the jewelry go. I, I tried to wear a chain for a little bit, edit, edit.

• 1:03:42Speaker 00

What kind of sneaks you got on? Only Cloud or On Clouds or whatever, right?

• 1:03:45Speaker 03

Yeah, I got the On Clouds, they're very comfortable.

• 1:03:47Speaker 00

  What kind of jeans?

• 1:03:48Speaker 03

Uh, jeans? I think these are Levi's.

• 1:03:50Speaker 00

Guy's got Levi's? He's sharp, man. The patented hoodie, what's the hoodie? What's the, you know?

• 1:03:55Speaker 03

You know what's crazy about the hoodie?

• 1:03:57Speaker 00

You spend the money on the hoodie? That's a little bit of your trademark, it's, you know, you're very known.

• 1:04:00Speaker 03

A lot of these are gifts now. Like, yeah, people get me like hoodies for my birthday, yeah. I mean, sometimes fans get me hoodies, but like, uh, yeah.

• 1:04:08Speaker 00

That people know you're a hoodie guy to go, "What's Josh gonna like? Boom, hoodie guy. Hey, you what a nice hoodie."

• 1:04:13Speaker 03

Okay, so, just to give you an indication of what the stay is like in, uh, in Alexandria, there's a place called the Greenbrier Motel.

• 1:04:23Speaker 00

  Okay.

• 1:04:24Speaker 03

  And it is-

• 1:04:24Speaker 00

This is where you would stay?

• 1:04:25Speaker 03

No, I wouldn't stay here, but a lot of people have, and some of my friends, uh, lived there for a little bit, or like, at least friends I was like, you know.

• 1:04:33H. Foley?

You're trying to find something garbage about you that's not about you from your hometown, which we do-

• 1:04:39Speaker 00

  Oh, that's not great, though.

• 1:04:40Speaker 03

Yeah, a lot of, a lot of fridges, uh, outside the room.

• 1:04:44Speaker 00

A lot of outdoor fridges, that needs a new roof, Dr. Pepper machine, a Dr. Pepper machine.

• 1:04:48H. Foley?

This has got nothing to do with him, this is humble beginnings.

• 1:04:50Speaker 00

  This is the humble beginnings.

• 1:04:51H. Foley?

This is the closest you could get to something trashy, is a bad hotel in the small town that you grew up in?

• 1:04:57Speaker 03

  I mean-

• 1:04:57H. Foley?

And got out of, and bought your mom and your aunt a house in Georgia.

• 1:05:01Speaker 03

But if you, but if you go to the exterior photos, I think there's a dog on the roof.

• 1:05:09Speaker 03

  I think there's one there.

• 1:05:11Speaker 00

Oh, there is, there's a dog on the roof.

• 1:05:13Speaker 03

So that dog loved being on the roof. I don't know whose dog that was, but that dog would be on the roof.

• 1:05:18Speaker 00

Listen, not if you came from humble beginnings, not a great area.

• 1:05:21H. Foley?

  Yeah, that doesn't matter.

• 1:05:22Speaker 00

You got out, you're, you're doing, I mean-

• 1:05:24H. Foley?

  You walked to work.

• 1:05:26Speaker 00

  He ran to work.

• 1:05:27H. Foley?

Ran to work. You don't, you're not drinking. You were good to your friends, designated walker. Alright, the can't drive, the left-handed glove thing.

• 1:05:37Speaker 03

Yeah, that is, that's a real motor skill issue.

• 1:05:41Speaker 00

We were a few personal decisions away around junior high or high school.

• 1:05:46H. Foley?

  Right.

• 1:05:47Speaker 00

That would've went the other way.

• 1:05:48H. Foley?

  Yes.

• 1:05:48Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:05:49Speaker 00

  You know what I mean?

• 1:05:50Speaker 03

  No, no, I feel you.

• 1:05:50Speaker 00

Listen, you were in the setting.

• 1:05:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:05:52Speaker 00

To be chasing that dog on a roof. But you're not, you're not at the Greenbrier.

• 1:05:56H. Foley?

Hardworking, responsible, you're good with your money, you're not biting your nails, you're not peeing in the shower.

• 1:06:02Speaker 00

  Smart kid.

• 1:06:03H. Foley?

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:06:04Speaker 00

  All class, man.

• 1:06:05H. Foley?

Do you do any fast food at all? Will you have Mickey D's or Wendy's or anything like that?

• 1:06:10Speaker 03

  Nah.

• 1:06:11H. Foley?

You don't put that in the body?

• 1:06:12Speaker 03

Well, it just, I want to, because everyone looks like that. It's literally like drinking. Everyone looks like they're having so much fun.

• 1:06:19H. Foley?

And I fall off a roof in front of you? With a Big Mac in my hand?

• 1:06:22Speaker 03

But it's just like, I don't, I guess the way I put it is that I don't, I don't do a lot of what I do out of like trying to be a better person. I just don't like the inconvenience of what it's gonna feel like later.

• 1:06:36Speaker 00

  Smart.

• 1:06:36Speaker 03

  If that makes sense.

• 1:06:37H. Foley?

  He's so fucking smart.

• 1:06:38Speaker 03

Like, I used to eat Chick-fil-A fries.

• 1:06:42Speaker 00

  Sure.

• 1:06:42Speaker 03

But then I was like, this, I feel sick.

• 1:06:44Speaker 00

  You feel bad.

• 1:06:45Speaker 03

I think they changed the oil.

• 1:06:47Speaker 00

  I don't know.

• 1:06:47Speaker 03

Because when I was little, it didn't matter.

• 1:06:50Speaker 00

Sure, yeah, it's also an age thing.

• 1:06:51Speaker 03

But I was also a kid, yeah.

• 1:06:52Speaker 00

Yeah, it's an age thing. You bounce back as a kid.

• 1:06:54Speaker 03

And then with drinking, it's like, my friends who drink, I'm envious of because I'm just very aware when I'm not having fun at a party. Like, everyone else is like chatting and dancing, and I'm like, you really feel like dancing? This place sucks.

• 1:07:08Speaker 00

Sure, but the real sad part is when you're drunk and you're also not having fun at the party and you're like, this is, you're in a dark, dark spot when that happens.

• 1:07:17H. Foley?

Man. This doesn't happen often, my friend.

• 1:07:21H. Foley?

  A hundred percent class.

• 1:07:22Speaker 00

All class, man. Love to see it. Yeah.

• 1:07:25Speaker 03

  Thanks. Thanks, guys.

• 1:07:26H. Foley?

  Unbelievable.

• 1:07:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:07:27H. Foley?

Uh, you're about to head over to Europe. You got your European tour going, joshjohnsoncomedy.com.

• 1:07:32Speaker 00

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:07:32H. Foley?

  The YouTube is killing it.

• 1:07:34Speaker 03

  Oh, thanks, man.

• 1:07:35H. Foley?

You're on the road. Anything else you want the folks out there to know you got coming up?

• 1:07:38Speaker 03

Um, yeah, so this tour is the, the Flowers Tour and

• 1:07:42H. Foley?

  Okay.

• 1:07:43Speaker 03

Called it the Flowers Tour, not just because every place has their own like designated or distinct flower, like some states, some cities and stuff like that, but Uh, the, the tour is as best as possible, being like built around different forms of, uh, like volunteer work and everything. And so we'll try to get people to come out to the show.

• 1:08:01H. Foley?

Get out of here. Shut up.

• 1:08:03Speaker 03

  But like

• 1:08:04Speaker 00

Sorry, yeah, continue. I apologize for my jealous dirtbag friend.

• 1:08:09Speaker 03

But, but basically we'll, uh, we'll do our best in, in each city that has somebody who can come out to the show to have like A booth there so that people know what's already happening. Cause like a lot of, a lot of like what Goodwill projects and like, and like community efforts look like, it, it, it seems like so insurmountable because People think that they're gonna have to start the entire thing. And it's like, you have a life to live, so you can't necessarily start an entire like Community project, but most of them are already happening.

• 1:08:38Speaker 00

And so you're just bringing light to

• 1:08:39Speaker 03

  Yeah, yeah, so I'll just

• 1:08:40Speaker 00

Hey, come here, give out information.

• 1:08:41Speaker 03

Like come to the show and yeah, like give out information. Or people can, can donate there at the show, so it's already there, you know?

• 1:08:49Speaker 00

  The hell are you doing?

• 1:08:51H. Foley?

Keep bringing me drugs at the shows, everybody. He might be one of the, he's like the best guy I ever met.

• 1:08:56Speaker 03

  That, I don't, I don't, I don't know about that.

• 1:08:59Speaker 00

He doesn't get out much, so. I mean, I don't want to take away their credit, but.

• 1:09:02H. Foley?

That's a beautiful name of the tour, the Flowers Tour. Man, we're giving back. This guy's fucking awesome.

• 1:09:08Speaker 03

But it is, yeah, it, it's, it's been really fun, so I'm very thankful to everybody who comes out and everything. Um, yeah, we try to Do meet and greets after the show, but sometimes it's, it's difficult.

• 1:09:19Speaker 00

You can't do it. Size-wise and stuff like that.

• 1:09:21Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah, sometimes it's size, sometimes it's like venue curfew and stuff like that. And so, yeah.

• 1:09:26H. Foley?

  You're doing big shows, baby.

• 1:09:27Speaker 00

  Yeah, it's great to see.

• 1:09:28H. Foley?

You're doing great. You're killing it. Uh, we're so proud of you, so happy for you. We love you.

• 1:09:32Speaker 00

  It's awesome to see.

• 1:09:33H. Foley?

Like I said, we talk about you often, how great you're doing.

• 1:09:35Speaker 03

  I appreciate y'all.

• 1:09:37H. Foley?

  Yeah. Man, Josh Johnson, everybody.

• 1:09:40Speaker 00

  Fantastic, baby.

• 1:09:41H. Foley?

The absolute hammer. I love it.

• 1:09:42Speaker 00

Buddy, we love you. Kippy, what do you got for him? Uh, guys, we're on the road right now as well. Fall and, uh, winter dates at areyougarbage.com. Tickets are moving quick and then due to the routing, we can't add second shows, so get them, uh, while they're hot. You know what I mean? Gang, we love you. Josh, we love you. Yeah, man, appreciate you.

• 1:09:57Speaker 03

  Yeah, you too.
