The Rewatchables is brought to you by the Ringer Podcast Network, where you can find the big picture with Amanda Dobbins.

• 1:04Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 1:05Bill Simmons?

You can't find Mina Combs because she works for ESPN, does football.

• 1:09Speaker 02

  You might.

• 1:10Bill Simmons?

Came here, she coordinated Stripes with Amanda.

• 1:13Speaker 02

Yes. We actually did text about our outfits this morning, but we didn't name the pattern that we were wearing, and so...

• 1:21Speaker 03

I changed because I felt like it was too on the nose to wear all white.

• 1:24Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:25Speaker 03

Since we're doing a Nancy Meyers movie. And, you know, white party is not a good thing right now. So I changed.

• 1:33Speaker 03

So I changed, literally, I was wearing a white shirt over this, and I changed, and of course.

• 1:37Speaker 02

  And now here we are.

• 1:38Speaker 03

  We were twinning.

• 1:38Bill Simmons?

Diddy's scared of outfits, like, Jesus. You did a football show earlier today, the NFL Live.

• 1:45Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:45Bill Simmons?

And now we're tackling It's Complicated, just an elite movie. Nancy Meyers, let's do it. We're going to play the trailer and we'll go.

• 1:52Speaker 04

Jane and Jake used to be married until he cheated with Agnes. Now they're married, but he still has feelings for Jane. I've never really known how to live without you.

• 2:02Speaker 05

You're not. Turns out. I'm a bit of a slut. This is wrong.

• 2:06Speaker 04

I like that you stopped getting bikini waxes.

• 2:09Speaker 05

  So wrong.

• 2:09Speaker 04

And just when it couldn't get any more complicated.

• 2:12Speaker 05

  You brought me a gift.

• 2:13Speaker 04

  Thank you. It did. Oh.

• 2:16Speaker 05

  I'm sorry.

• 2:16Speaker 04

I'm not. It's complicated. OMG, I thought he'd never leave. This film is not getting rated.

• 3:10Bill Simmons?

All right, the goat, Nancy Meyers.

• 3:12Speaker 02

  Absolutely. Love it.

• 3:14Bill Simmons?

You go first, then we'll go to Mina.

• 3:15Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 3:16Bill Simmons?

We've done Nancy Meyers before on the pod, but come on.

• 3:19Speaker 02

We have, but I don't know whether I fully articulated my Nancy Meyers auteur theory on that rewatchable. So if we're gonna call Michael Bay an auteur, if we're gonna call, you know, any of the genre or like big budget filmmakers with a specific style auteurs, then Nancy Meyers, 1,000% it. Like, a recognizable visual style, themes that she returns to with some of the greatest actors in the world, made a ton of money and a huge influence, like certainly in movies. And you can watch all the bad Netflix rip offs of her like all the time, but also, you know, design, like Airbnb, lots of companies owe Nancy Meyers like a really big check

• 4:02Speaker 02

and have been selling like the Nancy Meyers aesthetic for a very, very long time. So I'm a huge fan. And this is, if not the best of her movies, my favorite of her movies. Really? Maybe my favorite. Starting up hot. Yeah. Ooh.

• 4:18Speaker 03

  Over Something's Gotta Give.

• 4:19Speaker 02

  Well, that's the best.

• 4:20Speaker 03

  Yes, that is the best.

• 4:20Speaker 02

  It's the best.

• 4:21Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 4:21Speaker 02

And that is where like the Ato three like fully comes through because that movie makes over a hundred million dollars. Diane Keaton, Jack Nicholson, and like, and Keanu Reeves, forgive me for not saying Keanu Reeves sooner. But I, I, I don't know. You know, I realized, Bill, also, when we were watching this and thinking about talking with you, this is a divorce movie and a divorced kids movie. So maybe that's a little bit where I come in. I have a soft spot. I do as well.

• 4:49Bill Simmons?

  Are you a C O D or no?

• 4:50Speaker 03

  I am not a C O D.

• 4:51Bill Simmons?

All right, so we'll take that part.

• 4:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 4:53Bill Simmons?

Your Nancy Meyers thoughts, because you have not been on a Nancy Meyers rewatchables yet.

• 4:57Speaker 03

Every single one of her movies is a rewatchable to me, so I'll start off there. I don't know how many of you guys have done, you've done the holiday, I know.

• 5:04Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 5:05Speaker 03

  They're all rewatchable.

• 5:06Bill Simmons?

The only one we haven't been is Something's Gotta Give.

• 5:08Speaker 02

And The Intern. And then, and then also if you're counting, if you count the ones that she wrote, so, yeah, Baby Boom.

• 5:15Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we were talking about irreconcilable differences, which is not available anywhere.

• 5:19Speaker 02

Bill and I did Father of the Bride, and we both cried.

• 5:21Speaker 06

  We didn't do Parent Trap.

• 5:23Speaker 02

Uh, that's true. Oh, Parent Trap, very important to Craig's generation and a, a classic.

• 5:28Speaker 03

  The C O D movie, right?

• 5:30Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 5:32Speaker 03

I agree with pretty much everything Amanda said. Uh, I like how you defined her, why she is an Ato, because I feel like it's a genre movie. All of her movies are genre movies, but elevated, right? They're comfort food, both visually and the plot points and the characters and all that. But they're better than your usual rom com fare because of the performances she gets out of her actors. And then they defy conventions in a lot of ways, so I love every single one of them.

• 5:57Bill Simmons?

And the actors who want to be in her movies.

• 6:00Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 6:01Bill Simmons?

She just gets a higher class of people.

• 6:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:03Bill Simmons?

She gets the best, Baldwin, probably the best movie performance he's done this century.

• 6:07Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 6:08Bill Simmons?

He had some good ones in the nineties. I, what I like about her, why I said the goat is I just think she's a one on one. Nobody's in this universe, like she's gonna die and nobody's gonna be like, oh, that's the new Nancy Meyers. And I don't know what it is, like, the real estate, which we're gonna talk about a lot. But some sort of eye she has on how the movie should look. And then the fact that she has like these complicated, well thought out, well structured adults. That you don't get to see in movies, usually they're. Just in some sort of lane, and it's like, oh, I know that person.

• 6:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 6:40Bill Simmons?

The Meryl Streep character in this movie is really interesting. There's a lot going on and you feel like you've, by the time the movie's over, you feel like you know her. And she's like, oh, she's in a better place now.

• 6:50Speaker 02

  Right.

• 6:50Bill Simmons?

Oh, she, she, she doesn't need to be with Jake anymore. She should be like, she's grown past this.

• 6:55Speaker 02

But you want to argue with her in the moment and you're like, no, why are you doing this?

• 6:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah, you gotta spark with Jake.

• 6:59Speaker 02

Yeah, or there's some decisions she does or doesn't make during the course of the movie that I think about regularly, including the brow lift, you know? So, and the, so it's, she's, she's going through it and you go through it with her. I'm not getting a brow lift, but every time I, every time I think about, like, should I do something to my face? I think about that scene and it's complicated.

• 7:19Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 7:19Speaker 02

And that, and the plastic surgeon being like, we will staple your skull back this way. And then you'll have a headache for three to six months. And I'm like, no, I'm not doing it.

• 7:27Bill Simmons?

So she writes, Private Benjamin, Reconcilable Differences, Baby Boom, Father of the Bride.

• 7:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 7:33Bill Simmons?

I love Trouble, a movie that I feel like with different actors might have worked. Like a good example of like Nick Nolte and Julia Roberts together, no, thank you.

• 7:40Speaker 03

Did they hate each other? I feel like there's, they hated each other.

• 7:43Speaker 02

  And they're.

• 7:43Bill Simmons?

  Behind the scenes.

• 7:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 7:44Bill Simmons?

  They hated each other's.

• 7:45Speaker 02

  Oh, behind the scenes.

• 7:46Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's.

• 7:46Speaker 02

And then on, they were like, are they rivals or ex? They work for newspapers.

• 7:51Bill Simmons?

  Newspaper rivals.

• 7:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 7:52Bill Simmons?

By the way, dated, uh, I don't even know what that would be now. But yeah, just, it was one of those that I think with different people maybe works. Father of the Bride Two, Parent Trap directs. What Women Want, how do we feel about that movie now?

• 8:05Speaker 02

I will be honest, I rewatched it a few years ago and like, if you, if you put everything you know about Mel Gibson, uh, in a, in a, in a lockbox, which maybe, which maybe also you have to do with Alec Baldwin for this movie. But anyway, he is very charming in it and it is kind of funny. It's like, obviously a little retrograde, but I.

• 8:25Bill Simmons?

  It did well.

• 8:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 8:27Speaker 03

They mostly do well, right? I mean, you, like, the, this is, the, she's constantly underestimated. We'll get into that, I'm sure, when we talk about the criticism of it, both as an artist and when it comes to the box office, over and over again, year after year with her. And they're all bangers. I would say What Women Want is kind of low on my power rankings personally.

• 8:44Bill Simmons?

  Might as well.

• 8:44Speaker 03

To do a final rankings, but it's still a good movie.

• 8:47Bill Simmons?

Something's got to give the holiday, it's complicated, the intern, all in a row.

• 8:51Speaker 03

  Heat.

• 8:51Bill Simmons?

And she's, she, after it's complicated, doesn't really do anything for six years.

• 8:55Speaker 03

  Right.

• 8:56Bill Simmons?

But, you know, it's. Getting up there in age, maybe only want to do really great ideas. I don't know.

• 9:02Speaker 02

And then the intern is 2015 at this, so it's been 10 years. She wanted to make a movie.

• 9:07Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 9:08Speaker 02

But they, yeah, well, I think Warner Brothers, but they couldn't agree on a budget. And many people were saying that Nancy wanted to spend too much on her movie, to which I say, give Nancy all the money that she needs. Yeah, let Nancy cook. We let everyone else cook. This, this stuff costs money.

• 9:25Bill Simmons?

Maybe she wanted like a $200 million.

• 9:27Speaker 02

I think it was actually like 180 was like the budget of the whole movie. So that was a lot.

• 9:31Bill Simmons?

Well, it's funny that in the era of streamers overpaying for stuff that people were like, whoa.

• 9:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:35Speaker 03

  Too far.

• 9:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:36Speaker 03

  Too far.

• 9:37Bill Simmons?

  Going too far.

• 9:38Speaker 03

But when you go back to the beginning of her career, it was like the same thing. Who's going to see this movie with just a woman as the lead? Goldie Hawn? Do women even go to, yeah, turns out women going like literally flux to see her movies.

• 9:49Bill Simmons?

Well, I mean, there's a, we'll talk about the Meryl Streep part, but there's a whole Nancy Meyers real estate. I don't know if you've done this deep dive.

• 9:57Speaker 03

I'm excited to talk about it.

• 9:58Bill Simmons?

It's a cottage industry of people writing long think pieces about Nancy Meyers.

• 10:02Speaker 02

You know, everybody's got to make a living.

• 10:05Bill Simmons?

Here's, here's what I think the common themes. I did a lot of research. Big giant rooms with high ceilings.

• 10:11Speaker 03

  Mm hmm. Of course.

• 10:11Bill Simmons?

She loves the high ceilings. Likes like a lot of space.

• 10:14Speaker 02

Like a great room or just kind of?

• 10:17Bill Simmons?

If you can see another room behind the room we're looking at.

• 10:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:20Bill Simmons?

Home run for her. Like if you can see the kitchen behind like the big casual living room, she's pumped.

• 10:25Speaker 02

  So open floor plans.

• 10:27Bill Simmons?

She likes open floors. She, she likes when it looks lived in. There's knickknacks everywhere.

• 10:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:32Bill Simmons?

There's like, I don't even imagine how many, she must just be in the set for like a week, just putting

• 10:37Speaker 02

  I think so.

• 10:37Bill Simmons?

Little weird knickknacks down. Neutral paint colors for the most part.

• 10:41Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 10:41Bill Simmons?

Doesn't go crazy. No like aqua kitchens or anything like that.

• 10:44Speaker 02

  No accent walls. Yeah.

• 10:46Bill Simmons?

  A lot of wood.

• 10:47Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 10:48Bill Simmons?

She, she likes wood. She likes oak, like big antique kind of, you can see you found it in some yard sale. And then the kitchens.

• 10:57Speaker 03

  The kitchens.

• 10:58Bill Simmons?

Every time there's a kitchen in Nancy Meyers movie, my wife is like, that kitchen is just, I just can't believe. And this, this one has maybe the best one of all of them.

• 11:07Speaker 02

It's true, though the irony of it is that she, the, the plot engine of the movie is that she wants to renovate it. And I, for many years-

• 11:16Bill Simmons?

I had it in a nitpick, because it's a great kitchen.

• 11:18Speaker 02

Expand, expand. Let's, yeah, she wants to expand it. And for many years, I've been like, it's perfect. I will say, rewatching it again to defend that take, like, some of the storage, like, things are crammed in. You know what I'm saying? She can't really move the way that she wants to.

• 11:34Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 11:35Speaker 02

She probably has more stuff and less places to put the stuff. So now I do understand why she wants a bigger kitchen in this movie.

• 11:42Bill Simmons?

Nice little table in the middle for her kids to sit at. I like that part. The high, high island desk.

• 11:46Speaker 03

She wants to, kind of the engine of the movie is her redesigning this kitchen, which she wants, she says, four walls, its own room, which is very outdated, because the format they used in the movie-

• 11:58Speaker 02

Though, is that what about, is, is that standing in for what the character wants? At the beginning, she thinks she wants four walls, closed off, and then she needs to learn to let love in. See, see what we did, Mina?

• 12:10Speaker 03

I mean, I, I like her house as it is. Her, her $10 million house that a bakery owner could actually afford.

• 12:17Speaker 02

Like a dream, dream house for me.

• 12:19Bill Simmons?

She makes California seem like the best version of California in all her movies, too. Like, she's, this is supposed to be like Santa Barbara, right?

• 12:27Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 12:27Bill Simmons?

And it just suns out all the time. There's no morning haze in, in this version of Santa Barbara.

• 12:33Speaker 02

No, she's jogging at 8:30, forgets her meeting, and yeah.

• 12:37Speaker 03

Does it bother you at all that she lives in the house of like, a Hollywood studio owner? And she is the bakery owner in Santa Barbara? Like, I mean, the house has a courtyard, the garden, it's like, are you, because it's a capitol.

• 12:50Bill Simmons?

  Well, she got divorced, right?

• 12:51Speaker 03

Right. She got divorced from a lawyer.

• 12:53Bill Simmons?

We figure he's a rich lawyer?

• 12:54Speaker 02

Yeah, but he didn't make partner until after their divorce.

• 12:57Bill Simmons?

  Oh, interesting.

• 12:57Speaker 02

Because he says in that speech, he's like, you finally made, you know, I made partner, you have your bakery, like, we made it where we're supposed to be. Now, I do think that's a little late in the chronology, because he's 58, and so he's probably making partner by 45. Even, I know Big Law has its issues.

• 13:14Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 13:14Speaker 02

So, but, you know, listen, I, I have lawyer parents.

• 13:20Speaker 02

But he is making some money, so you.

• 13:22Bill Simmons?

But I mean, this is part of movies and TV shows. Everybody's house and apartment is way nicer.

• 13:26Speaker 02

Listen, that bakery should be making a lot of money. Maybe in 2009 it wasn't.

• 13:32Bill Simmons?

  It was packed.

• 13:33Speaker 02

It is packed, but they're only charging 650 a bag for granola. Now that granola would be definitely $22.

• 13:41Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 13:41Speaker 02

You walk in it and it's like Jones on Third-esque, so.

• 13:44Speaker 03

They probably shot it in the Prospect Park Boathouse. The bakery is not LA, which kind of blew my mind. But I, the reason I ask that question is it came up in a lot of the reviews. We were like, this is so unrealistic. A woman like, you know, they didn't say woman, sorry. The business owner would never be able to afford this house and it's, you know? And I thought, yeah, and John Wick can't kill 20 people in two minutes. But it's the same part of your brain. It's just a different version of it, to your point comparing to Michael Bay.

• 14:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:11Speaker 03

  Shut it off.

• 14:12Bill Simmons?

It's funny, I was thinking the opposite. I was thinking how if they made this movie like 15 years later, she would be like a borderline billionaire.

• 14:19Speaker 02

  Right.

• 14:20Bill Simmons?

She would have like this incredible social media and she would be a franchise and be sending her desserts out to 20 countries.

• 14:27Speaker 02

Yeah, so like maybe they haven't franchised it out yet, you know?

• 14:31Bill Simmons?

  That's the remake.

• 14:32Speaker 02

Yeah, there are multiple Jones on Thirds now, so.

• 14:34Bill Simmons?

Who's, who's starring in the remake when they do that? When it's basically, it's complicated again, but now she's.

• 14:39Speaker 02

But now I'm like an Instagram baker.

• 14:41Speaker 03

  Dakota Johnson.

• 14:42Bill Simmons?

She's basically Nancy Silverton crossed with whoever. Yeah, maybe it's Dakota Johnson, she's back. So this house, Spanish style ranch.

• 14:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:52Bill Simmons?

  Soft white kitchen.

• 14:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 14:56Bill Simmons?

Just a lot of dishes. That's another Nancy Meyers thing.

• 14:59Speaker 02

Sure, can we talk about open shelving?

• 15:01Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 15:02Speaker 02

I, it's, it's one of my big issues with the Nancy Meyers aesthetic in general. And otherwise.

• 15:07Bill Simmons?

I think she thinks it looks good.

• 15:09Speaker 02

But I guess it looks good in movies.

• 15:11Bill Simmons?

  That's what I mean.

• 15:12Speaker 02

But it's, I, it's an epidemic in real life, you know? And it's just, it's so hard to maintain. You gotta keep everything just so. What if you're actually using your dishes? How do you keep the dust off of it?

• 15:22Bill Simmons?

You don't have to worry about that in a movie, though.

• 15:23Speaker 02

I know, I know that's true, but I think that it's one of these things where we've set unrealistic expectations.

• 15:28Bill Simmons?

I was talking about the Green Bay Packers backup quarterbacks.

• 15:32Speaker 03

Okay, so I've been to both of your houses.

• 15:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:35Speaker 03

I was trying to, I was like, actually Bill's house, I feel like, has a little bit, just compliments to your wife. There is a little bit of a Nancy Meyers vibe to the interior.

• 15:43Speaker 02

  In a lovely way, yeah.

• 15:44Speaker 03

  It really is.

• 15:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:47Speaker 03

For you, I feel like the palette, maybe, the neutrals is very, but you do like a tidier, less shabby chic look.

• 15:55Speaker 02

Well, I just, I mean, I wish I liked a tidier thing. Here's the issue is that I don't, like, we just have too much stuff, you know, but the open shelves, there's nowhere to put it. So.

• 16:05Bill Simmons?

Nice. There's, front porch is always good. There's always a portrait deck.

• 16:08Speaker 03

  I'm in the courtyard.

• 16:09Speaker 02

  The courtyard.

• 16:10Bill Simmons?

Got a nice little view of the ocean.

• 16:12Speaker 02

  The garden? Come on.

• 16:14Bill Simmons?

Really nice house. I, I personally think there would be people there all the time working on that garden.

• 16:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 16:20Bill Simmons?

That's like a five days a week, people trying to keep that going.

• 16:23Speaker 02

Like the size of those tomatoes?

• 16:24Bill Simmons?

Yeah, there's just, there's just too much, and probably some coyotes.

• 16:28Speaker 02

Yeah, I was gonna say, there's like no netting, there's no acknowledgement of wildlife, which are, you know, if you've tried to grow tomatoes, as I have, it didn't, didn't last very long.

• 16:36Speaker 03

Why not her children? Cause they apparently did not have jobs or do anything other than just hang around Meryl Streep's house.

• 16:42Speaker 02

  Right.

• 16:42Bill Simmons?

Oh, I can't wait to go into the children.

• 16:45Speaker 02

  Oh my.

• 16:45Speaker 03

But this is a trope, this is another Nancy Meyers trope, which is these like, children of.

• 16:49Speaker 02

Right. Excuse me, Amanda Peet was a very, very high profile auctioneer at Christie's and or Sotheby's, okay? She's 28 years old and is just like auctioning off hundreds, millions of dollars of art.

• 17:00Bill Simmons?

But she had children in real life, right?

• 17:02Speaker 02

  Amanda Peet during.

• 17:03Bill Simmons?

  No, Nancy Meyers.

• 17:04Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, yeah. Oh.

• 17:06Bill Simmons?

Cause the children in the movies do not resemble adult children that people have.

• 17:11Speaker 02

  No, it's true.

• 17:12Bill Simmons?

Which, it's like her fantasy of what adult children would be for a divorced couple. And this is how they would act.

• 17:17Speaker 02

  Just around.

• 17:18Bill Simmons?

They're all gonna climb in bed together and just be ready to talk to mom.

• 17:21Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 17:21Bill Simmons?

  One of them's like 28.

• 17:23Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 17:25Bill Simmons?

  Meryl Streep.

• 17:26Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 17:28Bill Simmons?

  The actual goat.

• 17:29Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 17:32Bill Simmons?

Like, the best actor of all time.

• 17:34Speaker 03

Where do you even begin, right?

• 17:36Bill Simmons?

I wrote a column, I think for ESPN the magazine, it must have been like 08 or 09, where I figured out some scoring system for actors and actresses based on Oscar nominations and whatever. And even then, she had the highest score by far. And now she's had, I don't know, six, seven more nominations. Like, but this is a really interesting stretch of her career where it feels like she's moving maybe on the back nine of something.

• 18:00Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 18:01Bill Simmons?

It's, she's hitting her mid, late 50s, maybe, maybe time for the new generation to come in. She rips off Devil Wears Prada, Mamma Mia, Doubt, Julia, Julia, It's Complicated, The Iron Lady. From 06 to 11, four Oscar nominations and one for Iron Lady. It was, it was honestly like Brady.

• 18:20Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:21Bill Simmons?

Just, just not, it was like Brady, the second three Super Bowls and Tampa.

• 18:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 18:26Bill Simmons?

  Just ripping them off.

• 18:28Speaker 02

I was there because he lost one to the Phillies. I mean, to the Eagles, sorry.

• 18:31Bill Simmons?

  I know, I know.

• 18:32Speaker 02

  Right city.

• 18:33Bill Simmons?

I know, it was a big thing for all the Philly people.

• 18:35Speaker 02

You lop off Iron Lady and that's one of like the great film runs in history, in my opinion, from Devil Wears Prada to It's Complicated. I know, but like inter-

• 18:44Bill Simmons?

But just like that six-year run is better than most actor, actresses, any run they've ever had, where you have commercial movies, Oscar movies, Oscar performances.

• 18:53Speaker 03

And I feel like emblematic of like when you try to describe what makes Meryl Streep so great, which is really challenging to do succinctly, those movies, there's no like clear through line. They're all, the characters are all so different. Her performances are so different. And that to me is her defining qualities as an actress, which is she has played literally every type of character in every possible way. And this character is, I would say, and it's complicated, unlike even like, including some of the romantic comedies, unlike any other character she's ever played.

• 19:22Bill Simmons?

She is the Saturday Night Live sketch when they pretend to be Meryl, when like Chloe Feynman's pretending to be Meryl Streep.

• 19:29Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm.

• 19:30Bill Simmons?

That's who she is in this movie. She's laughing at everything. Every joke, she's just happy. Ah, ah, ah. And then Devil Wears Prada doesn't crack a smile for two hours.

• 19:39Speaker 02

Doesn't raise her voice, like, you know, everything at a whisper.

• 19:42Bill Simmons?

What's your, what's your number one Meryl Streep performance ever? I mean, you can get artsy fartsy with this if you want to.

• 19:47Speaker 02

I mean, the most important to me is absolutely Devil Wears Prada. And like, and I, and I think about Miranda Priestly all the time.

• 19:54Bill Simmons?

Do you think she thinks that? She's probably like, how the fuck do they not think this is Sophie's Choice?

• 19:57Speaker 02

She's making another one. But no, I don't, you know, another Devil Wears Prada.

• 20:01Bill Simmons?

No, I know. Cause I, I actually think it's her, it's probably her most enduring performance. As weird as that sounds, because she's won three Oscars and been nominated like over 20 times. But I think Devil Wears Prada will live on 50 years from now.

• 20:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 20:15Bill Simmons?

And be the first movie people think of her in, which is kinda crazy.

• 20:19Speaker 03

Do you think that's the first one?

• 20:21Bill Simmons?

  I mean, I kinda do.

• 20:22Speaker 02

  What else?

• 20:22Bill Simmons?

Well, I'm, I'm not talking about like, how great a performance was.

• 20:25Speaker 03

  No, no, I hear you.

• 20:26Bill Simmons?

  What's on TV, what's good.

• 20:27Speaker 03

  Iconic and memorable.

• 20:28Bill Simmons?

Like, when your kids get older, at some point, they will watch that movie.

• 20:32Speaker 03

It's the most rewatchable, I would argue, of any of her movies. It's one of the most rewatchable movies of all time.

• 20:38Bill Simmons?

It really, it's in the running for most rewatchable of 21st century.

• 20:41Speaker 02

Yeah. I, how do you feel about them making a second one?

• 20:44Bill Simmons?

  I'm, I'm, I'm actually, I'm excited for it.

• 20:47Speaker 02

So am I. And I, like, my heart's open and everyone's coming back.

• 20:50Speaker 03

  Everybody's coming back.

• 20:51Speaker 02

  Except for Adrian Grenier.

• 20:52Speaker 03

  That's fine.

• 20:53Bill Simmons?

So he needs to come back.

• 20:54Speaker 02

No, he's good. He's in Boston. He's been making french fries.

• 20:58Bill Simmons?

Come back. He's, he's figured out a new grilled cheese recipe.

• 21:03Bill Simmons?

He's always been cheated on 28 times.

• 21:05Speaker 03

One of the all time pointless male romantic comedy roles.

• 21:09Speaker 02

  He's a real loser.

• 21:10Bill Simmons?

It was really when they flipped the tables on, on that part. And it was like, what if a guy just had the shittiest part in the movie by far? Anyways, this was a crazy run for her. And I was like, I wonder if this is the best run of her career. And then you go back and there's this like Sophie's Choice, French Lieutenant's Woman, Out of Africa, Silkwood.

• 21:28Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah. Harper.

• 21:29Bill Simmons?

She basically gets nominated for the Oscar every year for like seven, eight straight years. So it's not.

• 21:35Speaker 02

Also, Deer Hunter Manhattan, Kramer versus Kramer.

• 21:38Bill Simmons?

That was her best supporting actor run.

• 21:40Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, it's pretty crazy.

• 21:42Bill Simmons?

I still think Kramer versus Kramer. I think is my favorite performance of hers, other than, uh, other than Devil.

• 21:48Speaker 03

I have a take sort of related to that movie for one of my categories.

• 21:52Bill Simmons?

  Okay, save it.

• 21:52Speaker 03

  I'm gonna save.

• 21:54Bill Simmons?

  And then Alec Baldwin.

• 21:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 21:56Bill Simmons?

  Who in the 2000s.

• 21:57Speaker 03

  Talk about it.

• 21:59Bill Simmons?

Transitions into becoming a really, really funny actor. He's an incredible SNL guest host. He's in, um, Along Came Polly, he's really funny, he's funny in The Departed, he's excellent in this.

• 22:14Bill Simmons?

  Does 30 Rock.

• 22:14Speaker 02

Right, and this is at the, this is the same time.

• 22:16Bill Simmons?

  30 Rock's happening.

• 22:17Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 22:18Bill Simmons?

And he's kind of like an A-lister again, like in a real way.

• 22:23Speaker 03

Are you guys 30 Rock people?

• 22:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 22:25Bill Simmons?

  I never was.

• 22:26Speaker 03

Okay, but you've seen, you're familiar with it.

• 22:28Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I know what it is.

• 22:28Speaker 03

Is he just playing Jack Donaghy in this movie?

• 22:31Speaker 06

  Pretty much.

• 22:32Speaker 02

  I just wanted to.

• 22:32Speaker 06

  Totally.

• 22:33Speaker 03

And it's not a bad thing. He, I would argue, he almost runs away with this movie. He is incredibly funny, we're gonna get into, but he is basically just.

• 22:41Speaker 02

Yeah, I guess I think of it.

• 22:42Speaker 06

  Softer, softer Jack.

• 22:44Speaker 03

  Like a more likeable.

• 22:45Speaker 02

Well, it's like, I think of this Alec Baldwin as, there's 80s, there's Working Girl, Alec Baldwin. Speaking of, you know, rewatchables, and then, and he's handsome and kind of a dirtbag.

• 22:57Bill Simmons?

Are we doing the faces of Alec Baldwin?

• 22:59Speaker 02

Yeah, well, that's how I think of it.

• 22:59Bill Simmons?

Cause don't forget about Malice Alec Baldwin.

• 23:01Speaker 02

Sure, right, where he's, I, I guess I do kind of forget about them.

• 23:04Bill Simmons?

Like Malice Getaway, like leading man, kind of a dirtbag, or The Edge?

• 23:08Speaker 02

  Right, but then.

• 23:08Bill Simmons?

He has nice run with those.

• 23:09Speaker 02

He reinvents himself, and in my head, he's like half Jack Donaghy and half Jake from It's Complicated. But they are all just kind of rich, charming blowhards with, you know, various degrees of connection to the world.

• 23:23Bill Simmons?

But a little bit irresistible, at least they're supposed to be in the movies.

• 23:26Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 23:27Bill Simmons?

I don't know if you two would have found the bear.

• 23:28Speaker 03

He's way more, he's, well, like.

• 23:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, we'll get there.

• 23:32Speaker 03

Yeah, in this movie, they're extremely like electric together.

• 23:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:39Bill Simmons?

I've always liked him in movies and TV shows.

• 23:42Speaker 02

  Baldwin.

• 23:43Bill Simmons?

For a long, long time. And I think his run actually exceeded how long it probably should have gone. Like, he had a 30-plus year run, even into the 2020s, until all the recent stuff.

• 23:56Bill Simmons?

Pretty long run compared to some of his contemporaries. You look at the people he's competing against in like 87, 88, 89. All those people are gone.

• 24:03Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 24:04Bill Simmons?

And he hung around three-plus decades. But I think he's so fucking funny in this movie.

• 24:09Speaker 02

  He's amazing.

• 24:10Bill Simmons?

I don't, I don't even know who else would have played that part well. I don't know who you could have put in.

• 24:16Speaker 03

  She has talked about-

• 24:17Bill Simmons?

  Like, pick an actor.

• 24:18Speaker 03

How she really does write her characters with actors in mind.

• 24:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 24:22Speaker 03

And she did that for, she's talked about it with Jack Nicholson.

• 24:25Speaker 02

  Right.

• 24:26Speaker 03

Who she was like, I can't believe I got him to do this. And I have to think she wrote this role for Alec Baldwin. Like, it is so specific to him.

• 24:33Speaker 02

Yeah. And his abilities. And his, like, physical comedy and, like, being.

• 24:38Bill Simmons?

The Home Sweet Home is so fucking funny.

• 24:40Speaker 03

My favorite part of the movie. We lost it rewatching it.

• 24:44Bill Simmons?

He's just so good. I'm able to, I don't, I know he's got a little weird the last couple of years, but I don't think about it when I watch older movies like that. I just, I'm trapped in the moment. I do it with sports, too. I don't, I don't carry the baggage.

• 24:58Speaker 03

So I, okay, I actually put myself back in the headset of when I first saw this movie in 2009. I saw it in the theater.

• 25:04Speaker 02

  Same.

• 25:05Speaker 03

Wish we were friends back then. When did you start dating Zach?

• 25:07Speaker 02

Uh, no, 2011 is when we met. I know.

• 25:10Speaker 03

I think I saw it alone in New York.

• 25:12Speaker 02

That's sad. I saw it over Christmas with my family. You could have come. My dad loved it.

• 25:15Speaker 03

Would have been great. And I was, like, thinking, what did I think about Alec Baldwin at the time? And I remember at then being like, I don't know about this guy. And then I looked back and the voicemail scandal was pretty close to when this movie came out.

• 25:29Bill Simmons?

Oh, when he was yelling at his daughter. That was a tough one.

• 25:31Speaker 02

  That was bad.

• 25:32Speaker 03

So I was thinking, like, oh, actually, back then, he was also fresh off of a-

• 25:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:36Speaker 03

  Sort of miniature.

• 25:37Bill Simmons?

He was a little bad boyish, because I know they thought about that with 30 Rock, whether it was a good idea to-

• 25:42Speaker 02

  Right.

• 25:43Bill Simmons?

  Bank on him for a-

• 25:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:44Bill Simmons?

  Five-year TV show.

• 25:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 25:46Bill Simmons?

So, like, four weeks ago, my dad was in town. As you know, I'm a child of divorce. And in the morning, my wife wanted to put something on because we were like, well, oh, let's watch a movie. It was like 8:30 in the morning. We were having coffee. And she put this movie on. He'd never seen it.

• 26:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 26:01Bill Simmons?

He was dying. And, and we were making fun of him. We were like, was this what you're hoping would happen with me and my mom like for the last 30 years? And he couldn't believe he'd never seen it, but I think this movie hits the most age ranges of all the Nancy Meyers, other than Father of the Bride, which is like an internal movie. Father of the Bride would be passed on for as long as we're having children before AI takes over.

• 26:25Speaker 02

Let's, I, I think you're probably right. I think Parent Trap is much bigger with like Craig's generation and, and mine too.

• 26:33Bill Simmons?

My dad wouldn't watch Parent Trap.

• 26:34Speaker 02

No, no, no. And maybe Something's Gotta Give.

• 26:36Bill Simmons?

  Maybe.

• 26:37Speaker 03

Something's Gotta Give hits, they both hit a lot of the same sort of keys. And mainly Jack Nicholson and Ak Baldwin just both being so funny.

• 26:45Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 26:46Speaker 03

And that movie, I feel like if you'd put on, there's a lot of similar laugh lines.

• 26:49Bill Simmons?

So Nicholson could have potentially been a version of the Baldwin. It just would have been a different performance.

• 26:54Speaker 03

  Yeah, a little less oily.

• 26:55Speaker 02

And you kinda, and you maybe then root for it to end in a different way. This is, this is the hard part about recasting is.

• 27:02Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 27:03Speaker 02

Like with Baldwin, he's great and steals the movie, but also we all understand how it needs to resolve to be responsible and we're okay with it. Like if you put, say Harrison Ford in that role, it's like, no, no, no. They actually do. Or Jack Nicholson. You're like, no, no, no. They, they need to, they need to be together.

• 27:23Bill Simmons?

75 million dollar budget. It made 218 million dollars.

• 27:26Speaker 02

  That is right.

• 27:27Speaker 03

  I'm saying.

• 27:28Bill Simmons?

  Third biggest Nancy Meyers movie.

• 27:31Bill Simmons?

  Roger Ebert.

• 27:33Bill Simmons?

  Two F stars.

• 27:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:35Bill Simmons?

Sid Meyers created, quote, "A cottage industry of movies about romantically inclined middle-aged people." Oh, sorry, Rog.

• 27:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:43Bill Simmons?

"It's a rearrangement of the goods in Nancy Meyers Bakery, and some of them belong on the day-old shelf." Rog.

• 27:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:51Bill Simmons?

  Lashing out.

• 27:52Speaker 02

He wasn't feeling it, you know?

• 27:54Speaker 03

A lot. Okay. So I had read a few, few reviews, not just of this movie, but of a lot of her movies, and they kinda made me angry.

• 28:01Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 28:01Speaker 03

Cause a lot of them are pretty similar in tone to that. And I'm not saying this is Deer Hunter and, you know, there's obviously issues with it, but. So many of them, I feel like are, they're treating these movies as being much more cliché than they are. And they're also not identifying the things that make them great personally.

• 28:19Speaker 02

And they're also, I think that if-

• 28:21Bill Simmons?

You can say, "I heard Amanda's," you can feel the-

• 28:23Speaker 02

No, I agree with her. I mean, I-

• 28:25Bill Simmons?

  Pain in her eyes.

• 28:26Speaker 02

Yeah, it's, I mean, it's annoying. There are, there is a certain line of film criticism that is not practiced here on the Rewatchables, I'm happy to say, where certain skill sets, like, say, the ones used in horror movies, are like acknowledged as actual filmmaking accomplishments. But the skill sets that Nancy Meyers uses are, you know, are just silly or puffery instead of-

• 28:49Speaker 03

  Right.

• 28:50Speaker 02

But it is actually, it's really hard to write something this well and also make something look this good. As literally every other Netflix ripoff can, will show you, you know? There's a reason they don't work.

• 29:02Bill Simmons?

  That's the key point.

• 29:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:03Bill Simmons?

So, first of all, a movie like this, you almost have to grow into it. It's like, you have to see it like three foot, you really start to appreciate it on the fourth, fifth time. But then, there's been so many bad versions of these. I think it elevates movies like this where you're like, "Oh, here's actually a good version of these movies."

• 29:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:22Bill Simmons?

Which I feel that way about some action movies too, because there's so many bad action movies now.

• 29:26Speaker 02

  Right.

• 29:27Bill Simmons?

That when you see like, like even when they're Die Hard with a Vengeance, like the first hour twenty of Die Hard with a Vengeance is so good.

• 29:33Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:34Bill Simmons?

You know, and then it falls apart. But there was one critic who liked it. You've both met him.

• 29:40Speaker 03

  I couldn't find his review.

• 29:41Bill Simmons?

  His name is Wesley Morris.

• 29:43Speaker 03

Where was it on the internet? I tried to find it because it was linked on-

• 29:46Bill Simmons?

It's my job. It's the host of Rewatchables.

• 29:48Speaker 03

  He gets it.

• 29:49Bill Simmons?

He wrote, "The most emotionally sophisticated of all Meyers's fantasies. A made-for-meryl film.

• 29:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:56Bill Simmons?

Streep deploys all her best moves. She's irresistible.

• 29:59Speaker 02

  Hmm.

• 30:00Bill Simmons?

It's complicated unleashes an unabashedly desperately romantic side of Baldwin that we haven't seen before."

• 30:06Speaker 02

  True.

• 30:06Speaker 03

  What a king.

• 30:07Bill Simmons?

He doesn't steal this movie so much as grant all Streep's fluttering and twirling and hand-fanning.

• 30:12Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 30:12Bill Simmons?

  Zubrin, counterweight.

• 30:13Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 30:14Bill Simmons?

  Our guy.

• 30:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 30:15Speaker 03

  Gets it.

• 30:17Bill Simmons?

I knew he would like this.

• 30:18Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, of course.

• 30:19Bill Simmons?

• 31:04Bill Simmons?

Hit the street, grab a can, and get after it. Most rewatchable scene.

• 31:09Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 31:10Bill Simmons?

I wouldn't necessarily put these two in as a most rewatchable, but I really liked the first two scenes of the movie and how they set everybody up. The anniversary party.

• 31:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:19Bill Simmons?

You see the slow-mo lake bell coming in.

• 31:20Speaker 03

  Mm-hmm, belly first.

• 31:22Bill Simmons?

And you just see, see how it changes Meryl Streep's demeanor, that, you know, it's like, oh, okay, I get what's going on here.

• 31:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 31:28Bill Simmons?

And then getting to meet all the kids, they just do a good job of introducing all the characters in the plots in like six minutes, that's so fucking hard to do.

• 31:36Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 31:37Bill Simmons?

It's just a really smart movie. All right, my first one. Jane has dinner with her friends the first time.

• 31:44Speaker 02

  The first time, oh.

• 31:45Bill Simmons?

The vagina closed up story, but just the four together.

• 31:48Speaker 02

You're so lucky Steve is dead, or whatever, yeah.

• 31:52Speaker 03

  The roast chicken.

• 31:53Bill Simmons?

Four friends just really enjoyed each other, but that's another thing Myers could add, but Rita Wilson, she's back.

• 31:59Speaker 02

  She's.

• 31:59Bill Simmons?

  Another buddy rom-com.

• 32:00Speaker 02

She's really fun, you know? She seems like I would have wine with her.

• 32:05Speaker 03

Is she, who, Judy Greer, Rita Wilson, like the pantheon of great rom-com friends.

• 32:11Speaker 02

  I mean, I.

• 32:12Bill Simmons?

Rosie O'Donnell's gotta be in there.

• 32:14Speaker 03

  Rosie O'Donnell.

• 32:14Bill Simmons?

I got, she's had a couple of good ones.

• 32:16Speaker 02

Hey, you know what Rosie O'Donnell's up to on, in Just Like That? The Sex and the City.

• 32:20Speaker 03

I cannot believe you're still watching this show.

• 32:21Speaker 02

I, I'm actually two episodes behind, but I did see the one where she's a celibate nun, so I honestly thought she was very good on the show.

• 32:29Bill Simmons?

  Wasn't prepared for that.

• 32:30Speaker 02

More star turns, like Rosie O'Donnell.

• 32:35Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that's, so would you say Rita Wilson and, and.

• 32:37Speaker 02

Judy Greer, Judy Greer. Judy Greer has the belt, I think, yeah.

• 32:41Bill Simmons?

She's been in like six of these.

• 32:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:42Speaker 03

  Being the friend.

• 32:45Bill Simmons?

  The bar dinner scene.

• 32:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:48Bill Simmons?

When they run into each other at the bar, leading to the home sweet home. I'd like that you've forgotten bikini waxes. You've gone native.

• 32:56Speaker 04

About it wasn't so dumb. And FYI, I like that you stopped getting bikini waxes. You've gone native. I was into it.

• 33:06Bill Simmons?

It's just like an SNL sketch.

• 33:10Bill Simmons?

Everything about it is so good. She's good. They're just like, they just have it. They have like electricity.

• 33:16Speaker 02

  They do.

• 33:16Speaker 03

He also says the Pilates are paying off. Don't forget that.

• 33:18Bill Simmons?

  All these back.

• 33:19Speaker 03

Every line delivery he has in that, that was my favorite scene is so funny.

• 33:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:22Speaker 03

  So funny.

• 33:23Bill Simmons?

  Family graduation dinner scene.

• 33:25Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 33:27Bill Simmons?

The, oh God, it's official. We're having an affair. I think this is very French of us.

• 33:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:32Bill Simmons?

I have that one. Jane tells her friends about the affair.

• 33:36Speaker 02

Oh, yeah. I'm having an affair with Agnes Adler's husband. I am having an affair with Agnes Adler's husband.

• 33:47Speaker 02

  That is genius.

• 33:50Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 33:50Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 33:51Bill Simmons?

  Lot of screaming and shrieking.

• 33:52Speaker 02

It's like, it's a, it's a good meme. Like, has it been memed reaction shot? I think I always think of it in my head of everyone being like,

• 33:59Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 34:00Speaker 02

  All at once.

• 34:01Bill Simmons?

Steve Martin dinner date with Jake stalking, leading to the Jake seduction and the bathtub scene.

• 34:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:07Bill Simmons?

  I'll really saw.

• 34:08Speaker 02

  Really nice. Yeah.

• 34:09Bill Simmons?

Uh, Jake has a heart attack.

• 34:11Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 34:11Speaker 03

  Another classic trope.

• 34:13Bill Simmons?

  Talking about Flowmax.

• 34:15Speaker 02

Yeah, I like a lot of sperm.

• 34:16Bill Simmons?

Prefer a lot of semen. I always have.

• 34:19Speaker 03

  Green bear.

• 34:19Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's right.

• 34:20Bill Simmons?

Jane gets everyone stoned is really funny.

• 34:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:23Bill Simmons?

The chocolate croissant scene, uh, the laptop nudity scene.

• 34:27Speaker 02

  Sure. Yeah.

• 34:28Bill Simmons?

And then, uh, Jake and Jane realize it's not gonna happen.

• 34:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:32Bill Simmons?

  So what do you have?

• 34:33Speaker 02

Probably the croissants are the single most, well, no, no, no, or the, uh, I never get prepared for this. I already said the plastic surgeon scene I think about a lot. The hotel.

• 34:44Bill Simmons?

  I have hotel bar.

• 34:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 34:46Bill Simmons?

Leading into the home sweet home.

• 34:47Speaker 02

  The hotel, that one.

• 34:48Bill Simmons?

  That whole bar.

• 34:48Speaker 02

  The bar scene.

• 34:49Bill Simmons?

  That stretch is awesome.

• 34:49Speaker 02

Okay. But I also, I like the second one when he has the heart attack. And then Krasinski is in the lobby being like, I don't know what's going on.

• 34:56Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 34:57Speaker 02

And I have always liked a lot of semen. It's pretty good. And then they have the emotional thing at the end. May- maybe I do that one. Maybe I pick the second hotel.

• 35:05Bill Simmons?

  Change your mind seven times.

• 35:05Speaker 02

  I'm sorry.

• 35:06Bill Simmons?

What do you have in mind?

• 35:06Speaker 03

For me, it's the dinner at the bar leading into them having sex because of the lines we talked about. Because they're so funny. And while, I guess, I should just say this now. I understand they couldn't be together. The breakup made sense, or whatever you want to call it. The resolution of the film made sense. But they just have such better chemistry than her and Steve Martin.

• 35:28Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 35:28Speaker 03

And I struggle with it in this movie.

• 35:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:32Speaker 03

And how it ends up. And it's all stemming from that scene. Like, everything about those two actors, they look like they're having the time of their lives. I mean, this is like, sort of, the whole movie, that all the actors seem like they're having the time of their lives. But in that scene, and in the bedroom scene, it is just two actors at the top of their games, to me.

• 35:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 35:49Bill Simmons?

Do you, do you ever, are you ever in the same room with your parents together? Or were you after the divorce, or not really?

• 35:55Speaker 02

Um, I was telling this story the other day. The first time I was supposed to be was after, was my college graduation. And there was like a department breakfast beforehand, but then I got too drunk and I slept through it. And so then my professors had to introduce my parents. Uh, I don't know if I, sorry about that, everyone.

• 36:16Speaker 02

So I don't think that they've ever been in the same room.

• 36:20Bill Simmons?

Look, one of two ways, like, they don't interact at all, or they actually do. Because I had the opposite.

• 36:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:24Bill Simmons?

And when my dad and my mom are together, it's like, absolutely the most fascinating thing.

• 36:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 36:29Bill Simmons?

And then, as my kids got older, they became fascinated by it.

• 36:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 36:33Bill Simmons?

Uh, when my dad was here, my two kids went out to lunch with them, and they were just like, you know, they could have made it. Like, it was like, one of those, like, you could see it, it's still, there's some sort of chemistry still there. It's really funny.

• 36:45Speaker 03

I have a question for you guys, because my husband and I talked about this after we watched a movie. How often do you guys think divorced couples hook up years later?

• 36:55Speaker 02

  Oh, interesting.

• 36:57Bill Simmons?

  I don't think it's a very common.

• 36:59Speaker 02

  No.

• 37:00Speaker 03

I don't know any, no one our age, there's not that many divorced people, but like in our cohort, I don't know of it happening.

• 37:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:05Bill Simmons?

It's happened with celebrities where people have gotten divorced and then gotten back together.

• 37:09Speaker 02

  Right.

• 37:09Bill Simmons?

Like Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.

• 37:11Speaker 02

But if it happens, they are just like, no, we're getting back together.

• 37:14Speaker 03

  It's not like a.

• 37:15Bill Simmons?

  Don Johnson and Dakota.

• 37:16Speaker 03

  Melon Griffiths, yeah.

• 37:17Speaker 02

Yeah, if you, if, if it happens, you find out about it because they're like, well, I guess we're just doing this again.

• 37:23Bill Simmons?

I mean, the worst is J Lo and Affleck.

• 37:27Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:27Speaker 03

  Or the best.

• 37:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:28Bill Simmons?

Or, or the best, but that one, yeah. So, you know, if the spark's there, the spark's there sometimes.

• 37:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 37:36Bill Simmons?

All right. What's the most 2009 thing about this movie? I have two, but do you have any?

• 37:43Speaker 02

  Normal-sized John Krasinski.

• 37:47Bill Simmons?

  That's a good one.

• 37:47Speaker 02

And or, and or just John Krasinski in general. Yeah, yeah.

• 37:50Bill Simmons?

So I had John Krasinski being the seventh lead of a movie.

• 37:54Speaker 03

I like this version of him more.

• 37:56Speaker 02

Very the obvious, like charming, you know?

• 37:59Speaker 03

  Yes, he's, he's.

• 38:00Speaker 02

It takes me back to a time.

• 38:01Speaker 03

Breaking the fourth of July, kind of, yeah.

• 38:04Bill Simmons?

The answer is actually being sad about having nobody to watch The Hills with, which is a thing said during the movie. That just traps you in 2009. Ah, this is exciting. The Amanda Dobbins Award for Best Piece of Real Estate, even though we've already covered it.

• 38:18Speaker 02

No, I know. I mean, it is, it is the house, right? But then I was trying to think of like secondary things because we all know it's the house.

• 38:25Bill Simmons?

No, it's a, we can skip over. We just had to give it because you're here.

• 38:28Speaker 02

The kids' bungalow is pretty nice.

• 38:30Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 38:30Speaker 02

I just, they don't have a job, but they have a guest bathroom, you know?

• 38:33Bill Simmons?

How do you feel about the house being in Thousand Oaks in real life?

• 38:37Speaker 02

  Well.

• 38:37Bill Simmons?

I'm surprised to hear that one.

• 38:38Speaker 02

I did as well. I mapped it out and it's like, it seems like the address is Thousand Oaks, but it's kind of down in the wilderness, sort of, in a way that seems less settled. So I'm okay with that. It's good to find.

• 38:50Bill Simmons?

Craig, you surprised by Thousand Oaks being in the location?

• 38:53Speaker 06

Yeah, because it also just doesn't look like it's 100 degrees, which it would be in Thousand Oaks.

• 38:57Bill Simmons?

Right. I was surprised. Uh, what's aged the best? There's good tidbits in the early part of this movie showing that she's kind of lonely.

• 39:07Bill Simmons?

They just do a nice job. Like she's in the elevator and she watches like the couple together and.

• 39:12Speaker 02

  Right.

• 39:12Bill Simmons?

But Nancy Meyers is good at that. It's like, I'm not going to tell you about what this part, but I'm just going to give you like five, six little tiny things.

• 39:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 39:21Speaker 03

I have a literal one, which is Meryl Streep, because she looks like beautiful in this movie and like just has literally aged gorgeous. And this is again, a hallmark of Nancy. Everybody looks great in her movies. And it's their movies about adults for adults and she makes, you know, our cinematographer, who I don't know who it is, if she has the same people that she always works with. But everybody's shot like just so gorgeous. They're like bathed in a golden glow.

• 39:48Speaker 02

As a compliment to the technicians at work, but like you can see that when Meryl gets like her special light, you know, and they cut from especially from Baldwin, who's supposed to look a little haggard, back to Meryl and it's beautiful work and it is like a Renaissance painting. And that is everyone doing their job well.

• 40:08Bill Simmons?

This would be, this would have been a good ESPN segment. Got to bring them in. Meryl Streep doesn't get enough credit for being beautiful. Dating back to Kramer versus Kramer in Manhattan. But she's, certain movies, like I think in Kramer versus Kramer, like she's just beautiful in that movie. But she's in Devil Wears Prada in this, where they just feel like two different people. But you would just, you would immediately know this.

• 40:35Speaker 03

Some of it also is like the performance is, we talked about at the beginning how it's kind of, she's not really like this in any of other movies and you were kind of.

• 40:43Bill Simmons?

  It's happy, giggly Meryl Streep.

• 40:45Speaker 03

And this is what I love about Nancy Meyers female characters is so often with rom coms, it's the uptight trope, right? The uptight woman.

• 40:53Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 40:53Speaker 03

Even a movie as great as Sweet Home Alabama, it's a cliche character and there's a million other examples of that.

• 40:58Speaker 02

I think that's the first time the sentence, "A movie as great as Sweet Home Alabama" has been said on this podcast.

• 41:03Bill Simmons?

  I fully support it.

• 41:04Speaker 02

And I am really happy to be here.

• 41:07Speaker 03

And this is a safe space for that take for a million reasons. But like her, Diane Keaton is the same way in Something's Gotta Give. Like, she is successful, maybe she has put her life or, you know, chosen work at the expense of other things, but she's like, kinda chill?

• 41:21Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:22Speaker 03

You know, like, she's, she's, she kinda rolls with the punches, she laughs a lot, she's quick to smile. I always enjoy that about her characters, they don't feel like stereotypes.

• 41:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:31Bill Simmons?

Well, that's, that's the thread to do with any good rom-com, or they go sideways, because the trope is always, this person's a mess, they can't find anybody.

• 41:41Speaker 02

  Right.

• 41:42Bill Simmons?

They've gotta bring a date to the wedding, and, oh my god, they can't find anyone. And it's just, their life's just a roller coaster. In this one, it feels like a realistic roller coaster. It's like, I get it.

• 41:54Bill Simmons?

She threw herself for her career.

• 41:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:56Bill Simmons?

  Got her shit together.

• 41:57Speaker 02

  And her kids, and...

• 41:58Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Whether she'd be attracted to Steve Martin as a whole, in this movie, the Steve Martin version of this movie, I have some doubts, but we can talk about that later.

• 42:08Bill Simmons?

Any movie, but especially any rom-com, where there's a smoking hot bitchy second wife? It's a home run. It's never not worked.

• 42:18Speaker 02

  It's true.

• 42:19Bill Simmons?

And it's like, most of the female characters are older, and it's, and then you have this other one, and he just sucks. It's just a home run.

• 42:26Speaker 03

The scene where she's in the elevator and notices her tiger tattoo for the first time, kills me, Lake Bell's tiger tattoo.

• 42:31Bill Simmons?

I liked, I Don't Speak Pedro is just really funny.

• 42:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:36Bill Simmons?

  Caitlin Fitzgerald.

• 42:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 42:39Speaker 03

Not given a lot to do, in this film.

• 42:41Bill Simmons?

Not a lot to do, but, now you get to watch this movie with the library of her as Roman's girlfriend for like fifteen Succession episodes, where she's so funny in that movie. And I don't, I just wish that character had been in this movie, because she's basically a blank slate.

• 42:58Speaker 03

  Blonde child number three.

• 42:59Bill Simmons?

I don't really understand anything about, does she work?

• 43:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:02Bill Simmons?

What's coming on with her and John Krasinski? Why does he treat her like a eight-year-old child? Why don't they have adult conversations? How old is she supposed to be? Is she 18? Is she 30?

• 43:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:14Bill Simmons?

What is she? But I was excited to see her.

• 43:17Speaker 02

It's still, I know her primarily from this movie. So every time I saw her on Succession, I was just very weirded out. I was like, what are you doing here? That's not, this doesn't make sense to me.

• 43:28Bill Simmons?

Apparently Joanna Robinson is a big, she says there's a whole library of work, like masters of sex. Like she's, she's like, said she's definitely one of those who hasn't been in the right situations.

• 43:39Speaker 03

Hunter Parrish, who was in Weeds. I don't know what else he's.

• 43:42Bill Simmons?

  That's the youngest one.

• 43:43Speaker 03

  Yeah, the boy who graduates.

• 43:45Bill Simmons?

I have a couple of categories for him later.

• 43:46Speaker 03

None of these kids have anything to do in this movie. And then Zoe Kazan, who I went to college with. Never interacted with her in college.

• 43:54Bill Simmons?

  Marlboro School, LA.

• 43:55Speaker 03

  That checks out.

• 43:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 43:58Speaker 03

She, I feel like, has done mostly more serious movies.

• 44:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:02Speaker 03

Than this, but she doesn't have much to do in this one either.

• 44:05Bill Simmons?

I don't have, I did all my other would say is the best, if you want to move on.

• 44:09Speaker 02

The title, can I throw that one in?

• 44:11Speaker 03

  What?

• 44:11Bill Simmons?

Do they, they don't say the title verbatim.

• 44:15Speaker 03

  No.

• 44:15Bill Simmons?

They say like, it's gotten complicated, but nobody says like, it's complicated.

• 44:19Speaker 02

  You don't think it's a good title?

• 44:21Speaker 03

No, I, this is the only thing I don't like about Nancy Meyers movies is some of the titles are really bad.

• 44:27Bill Simmons?

So what, what do you think the title should be?

• 44:31Speaker 03

I guess you can't put divorce in the title because that turns people off.

• 44:34Bill Simmons?

  Baking it up?

• 44:37Speaker 03

Where she talks, maybe something like.

• 44:39Bill Simmons?

  Second bake?

• 44:41Speaker 03

  So bad.

• 44:44Speaker 03

  Home Sweet Home?

• 44:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 44:46Bill Simmons?

Home Sweet Home is a great title.

• 44:47Speaker 02

Isn't that actually, what was the name of the movie that her daughter?

• 44:51Speaker 03

  The one with Reese Witherspoon.

• 44:52Speaker 02

  Directed, yeah. Home Again.

• 44:53Speaker 03

  Home Again.

• 44:54Speaker 02

Is what that one was called.

• 44:55Speaker 03

Something's Got to Give is like an objectively perfect movie with a terrible title.

• 44:59Bill Simmons?

Honestly, Mina, you nailed it. Home Sweet Home is a great title.

• 45:02Speaker 02

I would accept that. I just, you know.

• 45:04Bill Simmons?

Craig, are you down with that? Home Sweet Home? Yeah, yeah, it's great.

• 45:07Speaker 02

Maybe it's complicated. Is another like, what's the most 2009 thing about this movie?

• 45:12Speaker 03

  Yeah, like the generic.

• 45:13Speaker 02

Well, also the Facebook of it all.

• 45:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 45:15Speaker 02

Because that is still when we were, you know.

• 45:18Bill Simmons?

  You know what else?

• 45:18Speaker 03

You know about this, Phil? It's complicated. So when around this time, because Facebook had just launched, you could put your relationship status on Facebook. And one of the options was.

• 45:28Speaker 02

Yeah, so I always thought that's what it was. So in that sense, I'm like, oh, what a nice snapshot of a time.

• 45:33Bill Simmons?

Maybe that's the most to that night thing. Were you gonna say Craig?

• 45:35Speaker 06

You know what else has aged the best is Meryl Streep not getting a ton of plastic surgery in real life after this movie.

• 45:40Speaker 02

  True.

• 45:41Speaker 06

Because she looks like a mess.

• 45:43Speaker 02

  It is a great note.

• 45:44Speaker 06

Because she famously is anti-plastic surgery. I don't know if that's true, but she still looks great.

• 45:48Bill Simmons?

  That's why she's our queen.

• 45:49Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 45:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:51Bill Simmons?

The Big Kahuna Burger Award for Best Use of Food or Drink. It's obviously the croque monsieur. What's up? I can't speak.

• 45:57Speaker 02

  Croque. What about the croissants?

• 45:59Speaker 03

I thought you was gonna say chocolate croissants. And it was like a little.

• 46:02Speaker 02

The whole scene where they go.

• 46:04Bill Simmons?

Can you say it for me? I can't.

• 46:04Speaker 02

  Croque monsieur?

• 46:05Bill Simmons?

  Croque monsieur.

• 46:06Speaker 02

It's hard. I mean, I also, I had a problem with auteur, or like the Rs and the multiple values.

• 46:12Bill Simmons?

You can go chocolate croissants here.

• 46:14Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 46:15Bill Simmons?

But when she's, everyone is so excited about her croque monsieur's.

• 46:19Speaker 02

  No, it's true.

• 46:20Bill Simmons?

That it really made me like, I even asked my wife, you just gotta make these.

• 46:24Speaker 03

You're doing the thing when I, I can't say French words either, Bill, and I just say them really fast and hope nobody notices.

• 46:29Bill Simmons?

I know. I don't really like, this one of the reasons I don't like the French.

• 46:32Speaker 03

Do you remember the chain? Obon pan, ABP, ABP. And then like, whenever we have to do that, I'd be like, do you want to go to Obon Pan? Because I couldn't say it.

• 46:39Speaker 02

I also, in this movie, when Steve Martin has to say croissant, he does croissant.

• 46:44Speaker 03

  He lays into it.

• 46:45Speaker 02

He does like the full thing.

• 46:46Speaker 03

Um, I'm actually, no, I'm with you because while watching that scene where she makes the croque monsieur's and the lavender ice cream, I literally, I was like, I want both of these things right now.

• 46:57Speaker 02

The lavender ice cream does also stick in my head because then when Alec Baldwin shows up and he's like, oh, you can't sleep, you're making lavender ice cream again. I will also do honorable mention for the chocolate cake, which I just want a piece of, you know? So.

• 47:11Bill Simmons?

So the lavender ice cream, that's not something I would be like, oh, cool, they have lavender ice cream.

• 47:16Speaker 02

  Right.

• 47:17Bill Simmons?

  What does that taste like?

• 47:18Speaker 02

I mean, I think it's mostly sweet with hints of lavender. I don't know, olive oil ice cream, similar vibe?

• 47:24Bill Simmons?

  No thanks.

• 47:24Speaker 02

  Oh, it's all of it.

• 47:25Bill Simmons?

What would you have for that one, Craig? What made you the hungriest as you watched this movie?

• 47:29Speaker 06

Um, probably the croque monsieur. I would say it's basically just cheese bread, right?

• 47:35Bill Simmons?

  No, it's got ham.

• 47:36Speaker 06

  Oh, ham on it?

• 47:37Bill Simmons?

  Ham and cheese croissant.

• 47:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:39Speaker 06

The lavender, the lavender ice cream is like some salt and straw bullshit. You don't need that.

• 47:43Speaker 02

All right, well, you know what? Salt and straw is another place you should probably kind of check Nancy Meyers, but that's okay.

• 47:49Speaker 06

Turkey and gravy with a real turkey.

• 47:51Bill Simmons?

Salt and straw, like lavender and pears with blue cheese.

• 47:53Speaker 06

  Yeah, goat cheese.

• 47:54Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 47:56Bill Simmons?

Great shot, Gordon, or most cinematic shot? So after the daughter moves out, this is what I have.

• 48:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:02Bill Simmons?

And they, and everybody leaves and Jane's in her house alone.

• 48:06Speaker 02

  Uh huh.

• 48:07Bill Simmons?

And it's just like a good wide shot where you can see the whole house, but she's us like, oh, I'm alone.

• 48:12Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:12Bill Simmons?

I like that one. What do you have?

• 48:14Speaker 03

Um, the second time that they have sex, he comes over, he convinces her. It smash cuts to the sprinkler.

• 48:21Speaker 02

I literally have the sprinkler on the lawn written down as well. It's good.

• 48:24Speaker 03

Smash cuts back and it's Alec Baldwin laying back.

• 48:28Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 48:28Speaker 03

She's, she's like, not again. She's like moaning and he's got the shit eating grin on his face. Just a perfect transition.

• 48:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:36Bill Simmons?

Kid Cudi pursued happiness where best needle drop. I can give you Tom Petty, Don't Do Me Like That.

• 48:40Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:41Bill Simmons?

Or I can give you the Fine Young Cannibals. Good to hear from them.

• 48:44Speaker 02

I, I have Tom Petty, Don't Do Me Like That or Benny and the Jets when she's stoned.

• 48:49Bill Simmons?

  Hmm.

• 48:49Speaker 03

No one, none of the Beach Boys?

• 48:51Bill Simmons?

  Can do those too.

• 48:52Speaker 03

Dancing to the Beach Boys. When the moment when they realize everyone's kind of looking at each other and like, what's going on here?

• 48:58Speaker 02

  R I P.

• 48:59Bill Simmons?

What do you have for the Ches Rockwell and Brock Lenders Award for best character name? I like that the little kid was named Pedro and just wasn't acknowledged.

• 49:05Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 49:06Bill Simmons?

  Um, I don't speak Pedro.

• 49:08Speaker 03

Agnes with two S's, the second wife.

• 49:10Bill Simmons?

  Agnes was good.

• 49:11Speaker 02

  Oh, is it two S's?

• 49:12Speaker 03

Yeah. I don't know if that's explained in the movie or if it's just Nancy Meyers writing, but it's a very funny con, like a generational contrast to, you know, Jane, Jake, Adam, and then Agnes with two S's.

• 49:24Bill Simmons?

We should have given the Nancy Meyers backstory of how she had the writing partner that directed the movie she wrote.

• 49:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:31Bill Simmons?

  And they got divorced.

• 49:32Speaker 03

  Her husband.

• 49:32Speaker 02

Oh, her husband, yeah, Charles Shire.

• 49:34Bill Simmons?

So did he, do you think he married an Agnes?

• 49:38Bill Simmons?

I wonder how much real life shit's in there.

• 49:39Speaker 02

I don't know. She wrote Modern Love, but I think it's after this movie, right?

• 49:45Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 49:45Speaker 02

About they like going on a road trip with Charles Shires, who died last year. And they, and like it wasn't it's complicated type vibe of remembering what was like good about him, but it was different because it was, it was a nice thing. But she didn't get into the specifics of whether he married an Agnes Adler, who has a big job in marketing.

• 50:08Bill Simmons?

Amanda, you have a flex category.

• 50:10Speaker 02

  I do.

• 50:11Bill Simmons?

  What are you doing?

• 50:11Speaker 02

Um, so I think that I'm gonna go with Lake Bell.

• 50:17Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 50:17Speaker 02

Uh, well, the, there are two categories here and it's either.

• 50:22Bill Simmons?

Yeah, Lake Bell can't be a category.

• 50:23Speaker 02

I know, I know, but she's the answer to two categories. It's either the person in their own movie.

• 50:30Bill Simmons?

  Oh, that's a good one.

• 50:31Speaker 02

Yeah, I think that's who it is. Uh, I, it's at the very bottom of the.

• 50:35Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's, that's. Oh, that's the Judd Nelson. Oh, we never get that one out.

• 50:39Speaker 02

I think that Lake Bell is just in a different movie. She's not bad.

• 50:42Bill Simmons?

Judd Nelson in New Jack City. He's just in his own, he's filming his own thing.

• 50:46Speaker 02

She's just in like a very different, uh, aggressive movie.

• 50:50Bill Simmons?

  Really good one.

• 50:50Speaker 02

  Yeah. So that's, that's my.

• 50:52Speaker 03

She's wearing boy shorts the entire movie.

• 50:54Speaker 02

  Right.

• 50:54Speaker 03

  Just little.

• 50:55Speaker 02

  Yeah, her styling in general.

• 50:58Speaker 03

  Hard.

• 51:00Speaker 02

You know, just what, why is she living in Santa Barbara and dressing like that? And also what is her big job?

• 51:07Bill Simmons?

And what does she do in Santa Barbara?

• 51:09Speaker 02

She, so she is in marketing and the joke is that she is markets for like KY. But I think it's supposed to be like a radio station, which is, yeah.

• 51:17Speaker 03

Do we think it's funny that Nancy Meyers basically cast Lake Bell's Wario, Amanda Peet, in this similar movie?

• 51:25Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 51:26Speaker 03

In the same, not kind of the same role. I don't know who's, who's Wario, actually. I texted you. I was like, who's the poor man's version of him? But. They're literally.

• 51:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 51:35Speaker 03

  Playing the same.

• 51:36Bill Simmons?

I feel like you discounted Amanda Peet.

• 51:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, that's.

• 51:39Speaker 03

So maybe Lake Bell is her warrior.

• 51:40Speaker 02

I think Lake Bell is her warrior with.

• 51:42Speaker 03

  She is a better character.

• 51:43Speaker 02

We respect Amanda Peet in this house, if only because Amandas need a win, just generally, you know? She's one of our leading Amandas.

• 51:52Bill Simmons?

Also, just when you think like she's ready to give up the steering wheel, you're friends and neighbors. The college episode happens and she just takes the mantle back for another couple of years.

• 52:02Bill Simmons?

Lake Bell, though, we'll say this.

• 52:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:04Bill Simmons?

  And you know Dave Jacoby?

• 52:06Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 52:07Bill Simmons?

Her and How to Make it in America was her.

• 52:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 52:10Bill Simmons?

  All time favorite.

• 52:10Speaker 02

  Really, really powerful.

• 52:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah, and she was really good on that show.

• 52:14Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 52:15Bill Simmons?

And I actually feel like that's probably her best, that was probably her best performance, right? She's been in a bunch of stuff, but I think that was probably my favorite version of her. Butch's Girlfriend Award weak link of the movie.

• 52:28Speaker 02

  Mm hmm.

• 52:30Bill Simmons?

  I'll let you go first.

• 52:31Speaker 03

Well, okay, this is kind of, I was gonna do.

• 52:33Bill Simmons?

I wonder if we all have the same one.

• 52:34Speaker 03

I was gonna do recasting, which is part of this conversation.

• 52:37Speaker 02

I, I know where you're going and I'm, and I'm, I agree completely, so I came up with something else to save it.

• 52:44Speaker 03

Is this time to talk about Steve Martin?

• 52:46Bill Simmons?

  Let's do it.

• 52:47Speaker 03

Oh, am I, that not where you guys thought I was going with this?

• 52:49Speaker 02

That's where I thought you were going. I came up with something else, just for variety's sake.

• 52:53Speaker 03

  I don't think it's his fault.

• 52:55Speaker 02

  No.

• 52:55Speaker 03

I think his character is a little bit underwritten. I think he is going up against a juggernaut in Alec Baldwin, who is just so charismatic and so funny. But I do question my, I was gonna do, one of my flex one was the recasting. I was going to throw out the idea that if he was played by a more charming, charismatic man, we would, there'd be a little bit more energy to the rivalry.

• 53:21Bill Simmons?

  Like, like nerdier charismatic, maybe?

• 53:23Speaker 02

No, I think you gotta go.

• 53:25Bill Simmons?

  Or just charismatic?

• 53:26Speaker 02

You gotta go away from nerdy and steer towards sensitive. So it's, you know, so there's a balance.

• 53:32Bill Simmons?

  Who are you giving me?

• 53:32Speaker 02

  Sam Shepard.

• 53:34Speaker 03

  Sam Shepard.

• 53:34Bill Simmons?

Oh, that's not fair. Women love Sam Shepard.

• 53:37Speaker 02

Well, come on, that's a real thing.

• 53:39Bill Simmons?

  Can't compete with that.

• 53:40Speaker 02

  Well, he could compete.

• 53:42Bill Simmons?

You always throw Sam Shepard in these things. That's not fair.

• 53:44Speaker 02

  But I think it's good.

• 53:45Bill Simmons?

  Fighting Sam Shepard, he's losing.

• 53:47Speaker 02

But he's not supposed to ultimately, you know? But there's a little more of a, of a there there.

• 53:52Bill Simmons?

Could you do like a Dennis Quaid?

• 53:55Speaker 02

  No.

• 53:56Bill Simmons?

  No?

• 53:56Speaker 02

  No.

• 53:57Speaker 03

  I had two ideas.

• 53:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 53:58Bill Simmons?

  Cruise?

• 53:59Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 53:59Speaker 02

  No, sorry.

• 54:00Speaker 03

  No. Uh. Fair story.

• 54:04Bill Simmons?

He's had a lot of girlfriends.

• 54:06Speaker 02

We rewatched the, like, the first half of Top Gun Maverick again last night at my house.

• 54:10Bill Simmons?

Did you get to the bedroom scene?

• 54:12Speaker 02

No, because we only made it as far as like the first penny encounter in the bar. And when she's like, don't give me that look, he is not giving a look.

• 54:19Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 54:19Speaker 02

  He's just.

• 54:19Bill Simmons?

There's no looks, no looks being handed out.

• 54:22Speaker 03

Um, okay. One is a guy who's actually been in a romantic comedy with Meryl.

• 54:27Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 54:28Speaker 03

And that man is Tommy Lee Jones.

• 54:32Bill Simmons?

  Interesting.

• 54:32Speaker 02

  Interesting.

• 54:33Speaker 03

Going for a little more of a blue collar-y vibe.

• 54:36Bill Simmons?

Not as handsome as Al Baldwin, but charismatic, tough.

• 54:38Speaker 03

  Contractor instead of an architect.

• 54:40Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 54:40Speaker 03

He's in there fixing stuff for her.

• 54:42Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 54:43Speaker 02

Little gruff. I'm not opposed to it.

• 54:45Speaker 03

The other one, I alluded to this earlier, but what if, like, as a callback and kind of a meta joke within the movie being about divorce, what if we brought back Dustin Hoffman from Kramer vs. Kramer?

• 54:58Speaker 02

  Oh, I see.

• 54:58Speaker 03

  But this time.

• 54:59Bill Simmons?

  The callback.

• 55:00Speaker 03

  Is that too, too weird?

• 55:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:02Speaker 03

They also famously hated each other.

• 55:04Bill Simmons?

Has he ever had a normal rom com relationship, Dustin Hoffman?

• 55:07Speaker 02

  I also.

• 55:07Bill Simmons?

  He's too weird, right?

• 55:08Speaker 03

  He's been in some, actually.

• 55:09Speaker 02

It is funny that they do, their movie night, they watch The Graduate, speaking of.

• 55:14Speaker 03

  Um, that's true.

• 55:15Speaker 02

  But, mm, here's the thing.

• 55:18Bill Simmons?

I'm, I vote no on Dustin.

• 55:19Speaker 02

  I don't think that you're rooting for.

• 55:22Speaker 03

Him over. You need someone who you can actually root for, for over Alec Baldwin.

• 55:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 55:26Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 55:26Speaker 02

Or to be okay with. I think I did great work. I think Sam Shepard really bounces on.

• 55:32Bill Simmons?

  Pretty good.

• 55:32Speaker 02

  Okay, thank you.

• 55:34Bill Simmons?

Um, here's my weak link of the film.

• 55:37Speaker 02

  Mm-hmm.

• 55:38Bill Simmons?

The kids aren't damaged enough. They're children of divorce. We need one of those kids needs to be slightly fucked up in some way.

• 55:45Speaker 02

  It's so funny.

• 55:45Bill Simmons?

These are the happiest divorced kids that have ever been in a movie or a TV show.

• 55:49Speaker 03

I'd be happy if my mom had a $10 million house and made amazing food all day and bankrolled my lazy existence.

• 55:56Bill Simmons?

These kids were all teenagers during this divorce. There's no way they're all just doing great.

• 56:00Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 56:01Bill Simmons?

One of them's fucked up. One of them, one of them is like, uh oh.

• 56:05Speaker 02

  No, it's true.

• 56:06Bill Simmons?

  Been in college seven years.

• 56:08Speaker 02

It's really funny and it's, I think it's revealing of our respective divorce experiences where I watched this and I was like, they're way too invested in their parents getting back together, in my opinion. They're all just like sitting there like sad babies. Yeah, they're just sitting there being like, you and daddy need to get back together. And I'm just like, what are you? Your parents have put you through hell for 10 years. Like, no, no, no, no.

• 56:29Bill Simmons?

That's not the reaction. The reaction would be like, mom, what the fuck are you doing?

• 56:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, what's going on?

• 56:33Bill Simmons?

  That's a cat.

• 56:34Speaker 03

Yeah, I read it as they didn't want them to get back together. Maybe this is where our life experiences are.

• 56:40Bill Simmons?

  They're disappointed.

• 56:41Speaker 02

When Zoe Kazan gives this speech at the post-graduation breakfast, she's like, I just want to say it's nice, just us. Like, all of us together. It hasn't been like-

• 56:50Bill Simmons?

The original five, yeah. No, it seems like they want them to get back together, which is insane.

• 56:57Speaker 03

Yeah, but we, this was really hard on us.

• 56:59Speaker 06

The kids make no sense. The kids are really-

• 57:01Speaker 03

  This is really undercooked.

• 57:03Speaker 02

The kids don't make any sense. Yeah.

• 57:04Speaker 06

  Bizarre trio.

• 57:06Speaker 02

  Even when they find out-

• 57:07Bill Simmons?

It's a, it's a trio plus Krasinski, who has no job either. He's just, just hanging out. He's the interpreter.

• 57:14Speaker 06

Did they all sleep in the same bed together without Krasinski? And Krasinski was like, I'll just be on the couch tonight.

• 57:20Speaker 02

They were just like, the next morning, you know, they're all like gathering and hoping.

• 57:24Speaker 06

  Under the covers?

• 57:26Bill Simmons?

  Listen.

• 57:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:27Bill Simmons?

It's one of the reasons this movie's fun to re-watch. It's not a bad thing. It's not a negative for the movie. It's actually hilarious how weird the kids are in this. And how happy they all are like that. Why are they so happy? The kid's graduating college. They're acting like he's fucking landed from Mars.

• 57:43Speaker 02

  And they're all like weeping.

• 57:44Bill Simmons?

  NASA mission.

• 57:45Speaker 02

And he's like photoshopped into the big screen and they're like, wow.

• 57:49Bill Simmons?

He's graduating from university, ah, they're screaming.

• 57:52Speaker 02

No, I agree. It's nice that the, like- They don't make sense, but also the movie doesn't care about the kids, which I sort of appreciate. You know, it's like, well, they'll be fine. You know, we'd actually can just talk about divorce through the eyes of the grownups.

• 58:05Speaker 03

There's no chance they'd be living in Santa Barbara either. Like if you.

• 58:09Speaker 02

No, no. And definitely can't afford that bungalow with two bathrooms, even in 2009.

• 58:16Bill Simmons?

Well, I guess they don't have jobs.

• 58:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:19Bill Simmons?

  And they're.

• 58:19Speaker 03

  In between.

• 58:20Bill Simmons?

And they're either 13 years old or 30.

• 58:22Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 58:23Bill Simmons?

I don't know. Very strange. Uh, Woods age the worst. We mentioned an incredibly likable Alec Baldwin. It's kind of weird. I wrote down, are we sure Steve Martin isn't a loser in this movie?

• 58:35Speaker 02

  He is a loser.

• 58:36Bill Simmons?

  Bearing too close toward Loserville.

• 58:39Speaker 03

Are we surprised he agreed to do the movie? Because so we're, you know, she gets. Another thing that's great about, I mean, as you might, she gets these, the movies are about women and she gets A-list men, which is not always an easy thing to do, to sort of subsume themselves to.

• 58:53Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 58:54Speaker 03

Yeah. Great actresses. But Alec Baldwin gets this great meaty role. Jack Nicholson had this great meaty role. If I'm Steve Martin, I'm reading this and I'm like, I don't know. This is really a lot here.

• 59:05Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:05Speaker 03

  For me to do.

• 59:06Speaker 02

Maybe he wants to, um, Steve Martin, like, has tried to be serious Steve Martin in movies like once every 10 years or so.

• 59:14Bill Simmons?

  It's been more than that.

• 59:15Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:16Bill Simmons?

He, he does it a couple of times a decade.

• 59:17Speaker 02

And he like clearly, he has a side of him that's not just being the funniest person in the world that he.

• 59:23Bill Simmons?

All comedians have to do it. There's more to me here.

• 59:26Speaker 02

  I guess.

• 59:27Bill Simmons?

  I'm a serious guy too.

• 59:29Speaker 02

What, you know, and who doesn't want to be an architect? That's a pretty, I mean, it's the classic romantic comedy job. The man's always an architect.

• 59:36Bill Simmons?

  What about Bill Murray?

• 59:39Speaker 02

  As.

• 59:40Speaker 03

Thinking 2009. What was Bill Murray in around that time?

• 59:43Bill Simmons?

So it'd be like five years after Amanda's favorite movie, Lost in Translation.

• 59:47Speaker 03

  Right.

• 59:47Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 59:48Speaker 03

Lost in Translation, Broken Flowers around that time.

• 59:50Bill Simmons?

He's like a quirky goofy architect.

• 59:53Speaker 02

Yeah, but he has a little. I worry that she's gonna have to do too much taking care of him. You know, and that's, you know, you want her to be living her own life.

• 1:00:05Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I don't love Steve Martin in this movie.

• 1:00:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:08Bill Simmons?

  I do like Steve Martin.

• 1:00:09Speaker 02

  Of course, yeah.

• 1:00:10Bill Simmons?

Uh, and then I have for what's age the worst, the youngest son, you mentioned the kid from Weeds. I don't know what he's doing in this movie. Talk about being in your own movie. This kid is like a smiling serial killer. He's just a greedy maniac. He's a sociopath.

• 1:00:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:25Bill Simmons?

If he, if, if he became American Psycho, that would, American Psycho 2.

• 1:00:30Speaker 02

  Maybe he is.

• 1:00:30Bill Simmons?

I'd be like, that totally makes sense. He's moving to Wall Street. He's gonna just start killing people. I have no idea what he's doing, why he is so happy all the time.

• 1:00:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:00:39Speaker 03

They kind of remind me of Meryl Streep's real life kids. At least the two who are actors who I know what they look like.

• 1:00:45Speaker 02

  Oh, right.

• 1:00:45Speaker 03

The gummer Mamie, or what are her kids' names? Luisa and Mamie.

• 1:00:49Speaker 02

  Oh, the, the one.

• 1:00:50Speaker 03

One is in The Gilded Age.

• 1:00:51Speaker 02

Yes, the youngest, and she was also in The Materialists for one scene.

• 1:00:55Speaker 03

  Really?

• 1:00:55Speaker 02

Yes. Uh, and then Mamie is older and was on.

• 1:01:00Speaker 03

  She's in stuff.

• 1:01:01Speaker 02

A Shonda Rhimes show with QB1.

• 1:01:04Speaker 03

She was on The Good Wife too. She played like a mean lawyer, I think.

• 1:01:08Speaker 02

From, what, Matt Saracen, what was his real name?

• 1:01:11Speaker 03

  Zach Gilford.

• 1:01:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:11Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:01:12Speaker 02

Yeah, they were on that show for one, for like half a season. That's all, that's, that's what I know.

• 1:01:17Speaker 03

Cause Meryl Streep, you know, she's like three or four blonde children and feel like.

• 1:01:22Bill Simmons?

You would think like the acting gene gets passed down. There's some sort of performance acting thing that I would think it's almost like sports. That's why when that, when people get mad about the nepo baby stuff, I'm always like.

• 1:01:32Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:01:33Bill Simmons?

Would it make sense to me that Meryl Streep's kids would be good at acting?

• 1:01:36Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:01:37Bill Simmons?

At some point, that's gotta be something in your DNA.

• 1:01:40Speaker 02

  Is, it's quite good.

• 1:01:41Bill Simmons?

  Jack Quaid's a good actor.

• 1:01:42Speaker 02

But like sometimes like Meg Ryan just takes over his body and it works, but I'm like, oh yeah, I get it. This was handed down.

• 1:01:47Bill Simmons?

  He's a good example. He's a good actor.

• 1:01:49Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:49Bill Simmons?

But he's, both of his parents were actors. What are the odds he's gonna be a good actor? Like probably half decent.

• 1:01:53Speaker 03

Around the game, it's like Kyle Shanahan.

• 1:01:55Bill Simmons?

  March Manning.

• 1:01:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:01:57Speaker 03

  Immersed in the play calling.

• 1:01:59Bill Simmons?

Raffaela Hannah Rubinek Partridge, overacting word.

• 1:02:04Bill Simmons?

  Is it Meryl Streep?

• 1:02:04Speaker 02

I was gonna say. And it, you know.

• 1:02:07Bill Simmons?

Are we 10 laughs too heavy in this? Not that I'm arguing. Wow, that cake is good.

• 1:02:16Speaker 05

  I get it.

• 1:02:18Bill Simmons?

She's deliriously happy in this movie.

• 1:02:19Speaker 02

Except for when she's having emotional revelation, in which case, just a lot of, a lot of quivering, but there is a lot of movement.

• 1:02:29Speaker 06

When she announces the affair to her friends, she does like a twirl, the hair's in front of her face.

• 1:02:34Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's true.

• 1:02:35Speaker 03

Do you feel like she overacted the pot smoking scene? The, do you poke smot?

• 1:02:40Speaker 04

Please don't think that I'm weird or out of line or anything, but do you by any chance poke smot?

• 1:02:45Bill Simmons?

  Do I what?

• 1:02:47Speaker 04

I mean, do you smoke pot?

• 1:02:52Speaker 02

Um, yeah, like maybe they both did.

• 1:02:55Speaker 03

  One pull?

• 1:02:56Speaker 02

It's the only time that Steve Martin comes to life.

• 1:02:57Speaker 03

She was acting like she was on acid.

• 1:02:59Bill Simmons?

  I know, it is true.

• 1:03:01Speaker 03

Also, we believe like rich white people in California have gotten this long without smoking pot.

• 1:03:06Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, in 2009.

• 1:03:07Speaker 03

  Is that really believable?

• 1:03:07Bill Simmons?

  It was definitely out there.

• 1:03:08Speaker 02

  No, it's true.

• 1:03:09Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:09Speaker 03

It's a funny scene, though. I liked it.

• 1:03:10Speaker 02

I, I enjoyed it. It could be, can it be merril, but in a good way?

• 1:03:14Bill Simmons?

That's, I was a compliment. I love her in this movie. She just dials it up a couple of times.

• 1:03:18Speaker 02

  I agree.

• 1:03:19Bill Simmons?

Meaning you have a flex category. You're prepared for it or you already did it?

• 1:03:21Speaker 03

Well, I was doing the recasting. I could do some other ones, though. My Steve Martin hate, I feel like.

• 1:03:28Bill Simmons?

  Steve Martin hate?

• 1:03:29Speaker 03

  Well, I don't know, criticism, I, yeah.

• 1:03:32Bill Simmons?

All right, you already did yours.

• 1:03:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:03:34Bill Simmons?

Well, this is exciting. The CR thinks Luke Wilson could have been Harrison Ford. Hottest take, word.

• 1:03:40Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:03:41Bill Simmons?

A category I think we've added since the last time you've been on. Or at least.

• 1:03:44Speaker 02

Mine is fairly low stakes because like Steve Martin is the obvious, but it's, Steve Martin's not a hot take, it's a cold take. So I have a more like Nancy Meyers universe.

• 1:03:54Speaker 03

Oh, I have a lot about Nancy Meyers.

• 1:03:55Speaker 02

Hot take that, but it's not, it's, I think someone else should go first.

• 1:04:00Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:04:00Speaker 02

Okay. Mine is that, mine is that roast chicken might be the most overrated food in the universe. I like

• 1:04:07Speaker 03

  When it's really good?

• 1:04:08Speaker 02

  Even when it's really good.

• 1:04:09Speaker 03

The problem is it's often bad and dry, but when it's good?

• 1:04:13Speaker 02

And listen, I like Nancy Meyers believes in this and that's, you know, Jake's favorite meal. She kind of gets her recipe and her belief from Ina Garten, the Barefoot Contessa, who I also really respect.

• 1:04:25Bill Simmons?

Chang would lose his fucking mind right now.

• 1:04:27Speaker 02

And I'm just like, you know, it's, it's good. And that's fine. And you put vegetables or potatoes or whatever, and then you have like some chicken. It's fine. It's fine. There are many, many really good ways to prepare chicken and many other things you can roast. There we go.

• 1:04:48Speaker 03

Isn't that like Ina Garten's thing?

• 1:04:50Speaker 02

Yes, I just said that. I know she is. I know. I know that I am disrespecting like the, the women who came before me. You know, I, I get it, but like, it's fine.

• 1:05:01Bill Simmons?

I like it the most when it's, when the juices are crazy or when there's like a focaccia bread situation with it.

• 1:05:07Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 1:05:07Bill Simmons?

When like they roast a chicken, but it's on top of a bread thing.

• 1:05:10Speaker 02

Yeah. I absolutely like with the croutons and it's absorbed.

• 1:05:14Bill Simmons?

So you're saying like, if you just say, I'm just serving you a roasted chicken, you're not that impressed?

• 1:05:17Speaker 02

I just, listen, if, if Ina Garten herself is making it for me.

• 1:05:22Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:05:22Speaker 02

Then I, I, it's one of the best things in the world. That's never happened. I'm very open to that opportunity. Also, if you go to a really fancy restaurant and they, they're like, this is our specialty, it is pretty good. But like me at home, the average person at home, you know, it's, we, we can move on.

• 1:05:40Bill Simmons?

It's a good hottest take because it made me bad. Mina?

• 1:05:44Speaker 03

  I've, okay.

• 1:05:47Speaker 03

Here's one. I think Nancy Meyers movies in general, but this movie being the example are proof that old people should be in more stuff.

• 1:05:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:05:56Speaker 03

Like we need more movies of all genres, action, spy, romance, comedy, where the leads are all over 50 years old.

• 1:06:07Speaker 02

  I agree with this.

• 1:06:07Speaker 03

I just, the characters are more believable as having lived interesting lives. The actors tend to be better. I'm, maybe this is me aging, but I felt this way when I saw this movie in 2009. I was just out of college.

• 1:06:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:24Speaker 03

And I loved it. So I feel like her oeuvre is a strong case study for making more movies like this.

• 1:06:32Bill Simmons?

I don't even know if that's a hot take. That was a good one.

• 1:06:34Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:06:35Speaker 03

  Why don't we have that?

• 1:06:35Bill Simmons?

  Great take.

• 1:06:38Bill Simmons?

  I'm, I'm going full hot.

• 1:06:39Speaker 02

  Yeah, go.

• 1:06:41Bill Simmons?

  Santa Barbara.

• 1:06:42Speaker 02

Oh, boy. Here we go. You're alluding to this.

• 1:06:44Bill Simmons?

Biggest disparity between movies and real life of any location.

• 1:06:47Speaker 02

  What? Speak on it. Go.

• 1:06:49Speaker 03

  Like, good or bad?

• 1:06:51Bill Simmons?

The sun doesn't come out till like 2:30 in Santa Barbara. It's just a fact.

• 1:06:54Speaker 02

  I will, I'll fact check.

• 1:06:55Bill Simmons?

  It's a fucking fact.

• 1:06:56Speaker 02

This Sunday morning, because I went to Santa Barbara for one night this weekend.

• 1:06:58Bill Simmons?

No way. I don't believe it.

• 1:07:00Speaker 02

It came out at 10:00. And I know because I took-

• 1:07:02Bill Simmons?

  That's a miracle.

• 1:07:03Speaker 02

And it was. And it was cloudy and, and very-

• 1:07:05Bill Simmons?

That's like the sun coming out of Seattle.

• 1:07:06Speaker 02

And I was worried about my son, like, getting frostbite from the ocean when we went to the beach at 9:00 a.m. And by 10:00, the sun was out.

• 1:07:14Bill Simmons?

Santa Barbara's in a lot of movies. It's always a great location.

• 1:07:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:17Bill Simmons?

It's perfect. It's beautiful. And then when you actually go.

• 1:07:20Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:07:20Bill Simmons?

It's like just cloudy until 1:30. And it's never, never addressed by any character. It'd be like if you do Seattle movies and it's like, whoa, another nice day here in Seattle. It's like, come on.

• 1:07:31Speaker 02

  It is, it-

• 1:07:32Bill Simmons?

Pull this leg and place Jingle Bells.

• 1:07:34Speaker 02

You're making a good point. I do think you're underrating other aspects of Santa Barbara.

• 1:07:40Bill Simmons?

I'm pro Santa Barbara. I'm just pointing out the sun doesn't come out until 1:30 to 2:00 in the afternoon. And everybody there knows it and they don't want to admit it because they'll talk about how great it is.

• 1:07:48Speaker 03

It's such a strange place for people to live.

• 1:07:51Speaker 02

  To me.

• 1:07:51Speaker 03

It is. Like, I, I mean, I know there's many people who live there and clearly love it, but like, I can't imagine spending more than three days. It's like the perfect place to spend two days.

• 1:08:03Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:08:04Speaker 03

  Unless you-

• 1:08:04Bill Simmons?

Craig, do you have Santa Barbara thoughts?

• 1:08:06Speaker 06

I think Santa Barbara is heaven on earth.

• 1:08:08Speaker 02

I'm kind of, I'm kind of with Craig.

• 1:08:10Speaker 06

And I would retire there in a second.

• 1:08:12Speaker 02

  Well, absolutely.

• 1:08:13Bill Simmons?

So you like when there's no sun until 1:30?

• 1:08:16Speaker 06

I, I, first of all, that hasn't been my experience in my time in Santa Barbara.

• 1:08:19Speaker 03

  It's-

• 1:08:20Speaker 06

Anywhere on the California coast, you're gonna get the, the fog.

• 1:08:22Speaker 03

An incredible city if you have a ton of money.

• 1:08:25Speaker 06

  Yeah, sure.

• 1:08:26Speaker 02

Well, that's the thing. Yeah. You, I mean, you would have to have a-

• 1:08:28Bill Simmons?

  You'd like horses.

• 1:08:30Speaker 02

Yeah, I don't think you have to have a course. The, uh, you know, you like.

• 1:08:35Bill Simmons?

How many friends do you have who couldn't live there because the, the, the wine thing would get out of control?

• 1:08:41Speaker 02

  Oh, it's that.

• 1:08:42Bill Simmons?

  I have at least 12.

• 1:08:43Speaker 02

  Okay, that's nice. Okay.

• 1:08:45Bill Simmons?

And all my wife's side of the.

• 1:08:47Speaker 02

I would like to be friends with all of those women.

• 1:08:49Bill Simmons?

I have a couple of my wife's friends would be dead if they lived there, like dead for real.

• 1:08:55Speaker 03

How do we feel about Santa Barbara versus Ojai?

• 1:08:58Bill Simmons?

  I really like.

• 1:08:58Speaker 02

Yeah, we were just talking about that.

• 1:09:00Bill Simmons?

I, the cool thing about this is location thing.

• 1:09:03Speaker 02

  We are, well, okay.

• 1:09:04Bill Simmons?

Santa Barbara's got a lot of options around Santa Barbara.

• 1:09:06Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:07Bill Simmons?

Cause you can go to all these different, that's the coolest part about it, is all these different things. But I just think if you're going there and pretending you're gonna get an awesome tan, you might be disappointed.

• 1:09:15Speaker 02

Yeah, but maybe you just wanna be by the water.

• 1:09:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:09:18Speaker 02

  It's so like the mountains.

• 1:09:19Bill Simmons?

  Bring a jacket.

• 1:09:20Speaker 02

  Well, sure.

• 1:09:22Speaker 03

  Is, okay, second question.

• 1:09:23Bill Simmons?

  Don't worry about suntan.

• 1:09:24Speaker 06

Ojai is also 20 degrees hotter than.

• 1:09:26Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, Ojai is hot.

• 1:09:27Speaker 03

The whitest conversation ever held on rewatchables.

• 1:09:29Bill Simmons?

We were just giving people a taste of California.

• 1:09:31Speaker 02

We have given a lot of people for their money over the years.

• 1:09:34Bill Simmons?

Yeah, we did, we did 10 minutes on cereal.

• 1:09:36Speaker 03

How do you feel about Santa Barbara versus Ojai is probably the whitest thing I've ever said out loud.

• 1:09:39Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:09:40Speaker 03

Which is, you know, I mean, we're doing a Nancy, if there's, you know, is a criticism of Nancy Meyer's movies. That is, uh.

• 1:09:47Speaker 02

  We are, we're on topic.

• 1:09:48Speaker 03

  We are very on topic.

• 1:09:49Bill Simmons?

Well, that was a perfect segment. We're gonna have to take a break.

• 1:09:53Speaker 07

• 1:10:56Bill Simmons?

  Casting what ifs.

• 1:10:59Bill Simmons?

They said Harrison Ford, Mel Gibson, Michael Douglas and Tom Hanks were all considered for the role of Jake. I don't know if I believe that. That's why it's some of this stuff's half-assed. There's a Michael Douglas, baby.

• 1:11:11Speaker 02

You could see it, but you even.

• 1:11:14Bill Simmons?

  Michael Douglas is the architect.

• 1:11:15Speaker 03

I was just about to say, you were saying that, I was like, what about as a rival?

• 1:11:18Speaker 02

  But no, he's.

• 1:11:19Bill Simmons?

Then you'd just expect him to really be getting it on at some point.

• 1:11:22Speaker 02

Exactly. Like, there's, there's no weakness with Michael Douglas.

• 1:11:26Speaker 03

But he's pretty old at this point. 2009?

• 1:11:30Speaker 02

  No, he's okay.

• 1:11:31Speaker 03

When, so Craig sent the question of who's the hottest old guy ever in a romantic comedy? When we were talking about this movie.

• 1:11:36Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:11:37Speaker 03

My mind went to Michael Douglas in American President.

• 1:11:39Speaker 02

  Yeah, huge, huge.

• 1:11:41Speaker 03

All time, early, early, what's his name? Dream crush.

• 1:11:45Speaker 02

It's also the first time that I saw Michael Douglas in a movie, just because of how old I am. So then I went backwards and saw, that's 95. But like, I didn't see Basic Instinct or Fatal Attraction until after that. So I was, yeah, well, I know, but I was a little taken aback, you know? I was a little disappointed in Michael Douglas.

• 1:12:05Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:12:05Speaker 02

Yeah, hottest old guy. I mean, it's gotta be the oldest Harrison Ford was ever in a rom-com.

• 1:12:11Bill Simmons?

Yeah, I was gonna say, if you didn't say Harrison Ford, Mallory's gonna come charging through the wall.

• 1:12:15Speaker 03

When he rebooted Sabrina, he was pretty old.

• 1:12:17Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, he's older in Working Girl. Morning Glory, he is like the old fuddy duddy, but then he makes a frittata, you know? So, uh, God love him so much.

• 1:12:27Speaker 03

Pour one out to James Gandolfini in Enough Said.

• 1:12:30Speaker 02

Oh, that is, that's a very important one. It's really good.

• 1:12:33Bill Simmons?

  It's a good movie.

• 1:12:33Speaker 02

  Amazing movie.

• 1:12:35Bill Simmons?

  Tom Hanks.

• 1:12:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:12:37Bill Simmons?

Is two parts shy of movies like this in the 2000, in the 21st century.

• 1:12:44Speaker 06

He's the Steve Martin recast, right?

• 1:12:45Bill Simmons?

He should have been, yeah, but he should have just done two of these. Just to get over yourself, Tom Hanks.

• 1:12:49Speaker 02

I know, but I think he wanted to.

• 1:12:51Bill Simmons?

Just be like part number three in a rom-com. Like, why not?

• 1:12:53Speaker 02

Because I think he, like, he did all the Nora Ephron's in the 90s.

• 1:12:56Bill Simmons?

  I know, I get it.

• 1:12:57Speaker 02

And then he wanted to break out, I guess.

• 1:12:59Bill Simmons?

Yeah, that's fine. Best that guy. So, the anniversary guy in the very beginning of the movie, when he was with Nora Dunn, the toast thing.

• 1:13:08Speaker 02

Well, Nora Dunn was the bad guy, for me.

• 1:13:10Bill Simmons?

  She's Nora Dunn, though.

• 1:13:11Speaker 02

Yeah, but still, I was like, what's Nora Dunn doing here?

• 1:13:13Bill Simmons?

Her husband in the movie is the guy from To Jillian on her 37th birthday. With my queen, Michelle Pfeiffer. She's her friend.

• 1:13:23Speaker 03

  Would not have.

• 1:13:23Bill Simmons?

I'm probably the only person who knows that.

• 1:13:24Speaker 02

Yeah, I didn't play that. That's why, yeah, my answer was Norah Dab, but same scene.

• 1:13:28Bill Simmons?

When we do the Michelle Pfeiffer mountain of just the movies where she reaches queen status, I think that's.

• 1:13:35Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:13:35Bill Simmons?

Fabulous Baker Boys is here and then.

• 1:13:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:37Bill Simmons?

  We get there.

• 1:13:38Speaker 03

  Where's What Lies, Vinny?

• 1:13:39Bill Simmons?

She's just a dead ghost and do you know what, what, what happens in that movie?

• 1:13:43Speaker 03

I, you know what happens in that movie? I was traumatized by that movie. I saw it in the theaters. It was the first.

• 1:13:48Bill Simmons?

What lies, what lies, man, is. No, to Jillian or 37th birthday.

• 1:13:52Speaker 03

Oh, part of me. Uh, don't think I've seen that.

• 1:13:53Bill Simmons?

She's married to Peter Gallagher and she dies.

• 1:13:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:56Bill Simmons?

And they go, he goes to Nantucket the next year with the whole crew, but he still was still in love with Michelle Pfeiffer that he just wanders on the beach and talks to her ghost because I would do the same thing if I'd been married to her.

• 1:14:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:14:11Bill Simmons?

That's not the answer to the best that guy, though.

• 1:14:14Bill Simmons?

From Succession, the guy who played Ravenhead. Nazi guy. Hitler-loving anchor is the.

• 1:14:20Speaker 03

  He's in this movie?

• 1:14:21Bill Simmons?

New York City hotel clerk in the beginning, checking him in.

• 1:14:23Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 1:14:24Bill Simmons?

  Ravenhead.

• 1:14:24Speaker 03

  Another succession callback.

• 1:14:26Speaker 02

  There you go.

• 1:14:27Bill Simmons?

  There you go.

• 1:14:28Speaker 02

Guess that Nancy Meyers' just succession plotline is not the most surprising thing.

• 1:14:32Bill Simmons?

Kid, the same name as Hitler's dog for his dog, but it was different spelling.

• 1:14:36Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:14:37Bill Simmons?

  On Succession.

• 1:14:37Speaker 03

  And succession.

• 1:14:38Bill Simmons?

Remember that tidbit. Diane Waiters, a word, Lakeview eligible.

• 1:14:43Bill Simmons?

Not in that movie, the most, she's in four scenes.

• 1:14:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:14:47Bill Simmons?

  Pedro, the little kid.

• 1:14:48Speaker 02

He's, he is doing a lot of important work. Pedro's really good when he's like, why did you take your cellphone?

• 1:14:55Bill Simmons?

  Pedro might be the answer.

• 1:14:56Speaker 03

Yeah, it is a funny moment. And then when Alec Baldwin later says, you know, I've got a five year old at home and also Pedro, it's a great laugh line.

• 1:15:03Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:05Bill Simmons?

Recasting couch director city, I have Chris Pratt as the youngest son.

• 1:15:11Bill Simmons?

And it's a good era of Chris Pratt.

• 1:15:12Speaker 02

  In 2009, Chris Pratt?

• 1:15:13Bill Simmons?

Yeah, when Chris Pratt was a little chubby, had a sense of humor, was popping in different rom coms, brought something to the table. It's in five year engagement, he's in ten years.

• 1:15:23Speaker 02

But he doesn't have to play, like, and then he just plays, like, no, he has no problems.

• 1:15:26Bill Simmons?

He's just funny, he's getting a couple of jokes off. One of these three kids.

• 1:15:29Speaker 03

I don't think anyone's bringing anything to the table in these roles.

• 1:15:32Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:15:33Speaker 03

  These thankful spoiled children roles.

• 1:15:35Bill Simmons?

  Who do you have?

• 1:15:35Speaker 02

Well, Chris Pratt plus John Krasinski is like a little bit too much NBC late 2000s comedy night. Plus, plus Alec Baldwin in 30 Rock, you know, it's, that might overload it.

• 1:15:50Bill Simmons?

Juliet chimed in, because I had to clear with her that we were doing this.

• 1:15:55Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, of course.

• 1:15:56Bill Simmons?

Yeah, she's on maternity leave, just want to make sure she doesn't go threatening anyway.

• 1:16:00Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:16:00Bill Simmons?

Loves Nate Meyers. She said, just make sure you kill Krasinski during the podcast.

• 1:16:04Speaker 02

Yeah, I knew that she'd say that.

• 1:16:06Bill Simmons?

  That was her.

• 1:16:07Speaker 03

Does she think he's bad in this movie?

• 1:16:08Bill Simmons?

  Um.

• 1:16:09Speaker 02

I don't think, I think that she has had her fill, yeah, of John Krasinski. I think she's had enough.

• 1:16:16Bill Simmons?

  I think she's good.

• 1:16:16Speaker 03

This, to me, hargens back to a time when I liked him more and it felt like he was less.

• 1:16:21Bill Simmons?

I missed this version of John Krasinski.

• 1:16:22Speaker 03

Like, I was watching this and being like, oh, I, I found him so charming back then.

• 1:16:27Bill Simmons?

Adam Brody in that part, maybe?

• 1:16:29Speaker 02

  Definitely.

• 1:16:30Speaker 03

  Definitely, yeah.

• 1:16:30Speaker 02

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 1:16:31Speaker 03

  Same vibe.

• 1:16:33Bill Simmons?

Craig, you have a flex category?

• 1:16:36Speaker 06

I wanted to go back to, Amanda brought it up earlier, but I wanted to hash out what the hottest job of a male love interest in a rom com could be.

• 1:16:44Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 1:16:45Speaker 06

  Because I think.

• 1:16:46Bill Simmons?

  Great topic, Craig.

• 1:16:46Speaker 06

Steve Martin as Architect is certainly up there.

• 1:16:49Speaker 02

  Architect is the traditional.

• 1:16:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:16:51Speaker 06

We have perhaps like a, like a male pediatrician, there's the journalist is always in these movies, perhaps a chef.

• 1:16:58Bill Simmons?

How about Delmet Mulrooney in My Best Friend's Wedding, sports writer but son of the owner of the Chicago Cubs, but also a sports writer, trying to forge his own wedding.

• 1:17:07Speaker 02

But he won't take a job.

• 1:17:08Bill Simmons?

Won't take a job with the team.

• 1:17:10Speaker 02

So she has to pack for a 30 degree swing.

• 1:17:12Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, grounded rich guy.

• 1:17:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:14Bill Simmons?

But still probably gonna take a little bit too.

• 1:17:15Speaker 03

Tom Hanks is a grounded rich guy and you've got mail, same kind of vibe.

• 1:17:18Bill Simmons?

  Grounded bookstore guy.

• 1:17:19Speaker 03

Yeah, I mean, he's the, he's got the empire.

• 1:17:21Bill Simmons?

He's destroying small bookstores all over New York.

• 1:17:23Speaker 02

Right, but now Barnes and Noble is basically a big rep, so it's, it's okay again to like him.

• 1:17:28Bill Simmons?

  So you would say?

• 1:17:30Speaker 06

Architect is probably on the Mount Rushmore.

• 1:17:32Speaker 02

  Yeah, for sure.

• 1:17:33Bill Simmons?

  Architect's a good one.

• 1:17:34Speaker 03

  Why? What is it about?

• 1:17:36Speaker 06

Cause it's a job that everybody wants when they're like 12.

• 1:17:40Bill Simmons?

  It's creative.

• 1:17:41Speaker 02

  It's creative, but still practical.

• 1:17:43Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:17:43Speaker 06

You're working with your hands a little bit?

• 1:17:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:17:45Speaker 03

  Yes.

• 1:17:46Bill Simmons?

What about like Don Draper, like running your own ad agency where you get to do pitches to clients? And a rom com? Ron Bright's coming in, we gotta.

• 1:17:53Speaker 02

I do think, I think Don Draper has sort of ruined that because then you know.

• 1:17:57Bill Simmons?

Don Draper himself has ruined it.

• 1:17:58Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. So it's like, you know what comes with it, which is womanizing and zubi zubi zoo.

• 1:18:03Speaker 06

  Defense attorney?

• 1:18:04Speaker 02

  Um.

• 1:18:05Speaker 06

  Hmm, I don't know if it's lawyer.

• 1:18:07Speaker 03

  Lawyers or businessmen.

• 1:18:09Speaker 06

What about stay at home dad whose wife has passed away?

• 1:18:13Speaker 03

  He's gotta have a job.

• 1:18:13Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:18:14Speaker 06

  Gotta have a job.

• 1:18:14Speaker 03

It's very hard to be the male lead of a romantic comedy if you're unemployed.

• 1:18:18Speaker 06

  Chef?

• 1:18:18Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:18:19Speaker 06

  Chef?

• 1:18:20Speaker 02

Um, I'm trying to think, so.

• 1:18:23Speaker 03

Thinking of some of the classics.

• 1:18:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:18:25Speaker 03

  Jobs.

• 1:18:25Bill Simmons?

  Chang.

• 1:18:26Speaker 02

  Right, right, right, but then.

• 1:18:27Bill Simmons?

  Grace is great.

• 1:18:29Speaker 02

Burnt, that's not really a romantic comedy.

• 1:18:32Speaker 06

The movie Chef is, you know.

• 1:18:33Speaker 02

  Oh, sure.

• 1:18:36Speaker 06

  What about a vet?

• 1:18:37Bill Simmons?

What's, what's his job in Sleepless in Seattle?

• 1:18:39Speaker 03

  I think he's an architect.

• 1:18:42Speaker 03

  That's right.

• 1:18:43Speaker 02

  I think so.

• 1:18:43Bill Simmons?

How about, well, this isn't totally rom com, but Campbell Scott in Singles, what's he, like a building planner? There's like a city planner.

• 1:18:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:18:53Bill Simmons?

Planning like, like transport, urban, urban planner?

• 1:18:57Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:18:58Speaker 03

  What is Bill Pullman?

• 1:19:00Bill Simmons?

The sports agent and sports is out?

• 1:19:02Speaker 03

Sports doctor, Bill Hader in Trainwreck.

• 1:19:04Bill Simmons?

Sports doctor, that's a good one.

• 1:19:05Speaker 03

It's like a good, kind of like veterinarian.

• 1:19:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:08Speaker 02

And it's also just from like a work-life balance. I mean, you will have to be on call, but not all of the time.

• 1:19:14Bill Simmons?

  Plastic surgeon?

• 1:19:15Speaker 02

  You know?

• 1:19:16Speaker 06

  Hmm.

• 1:19:16Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:19:17Speaker 06

  Too vain.

• 1:19:17Speaker 02

Then you get too close to.

• 1:19:18Speaker 03

Science, face of everything romantic comedy stand for.

• 1:19:21Speaker 06

I think Nancy knew that it's architect, which is why she gave it to Steve Martin's character, cause he needed as much help as he could get.

• 1:19:27Bill Simmons?

  How about oil billionaire?

• 1:19:28Speaker 06

  No.

• 1:19:30Bill Simmons?

Half ass internet research. In the scene where Jake, where Jane answers a phone call from her daughter and Jake kisses her. Jake wasn't supposed to kiss her and she screwed up and said the wrong line and they kept it in the movie because they thought it was funny.

• 1:19:48Speaker 02

  I always liked that.

• 1:19:49Bill Simmons?

Baldwin said they used a body double for his nude scene.

• 1:19:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, no joke.

• 1:19:53Bill Simmons?

  And then, uh.

• 1:19:55Speaker 02

  We'll come back to that.

• 1:19:56Bill Simmons?

A lot of this movie was filmed in New York. It's kind of depressing.

• 1:19:59Speaker 02

  Yeah, what is that about?

• 1:20:01Bill Simmons?

Lot of, uh, soundstage interior stuff.

• 1:20:03Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:20:04Bill Simmons?

And then they used a wide shot of Thousand Oaks, probably because Thousand Oaks is 100 degrees. And, uh, they did some Montecito and Santa Barbara and that's it.

• 1:20:14Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:14Bill Simmons?

  Apex Mountain.

• 1:20:16Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:20:17Bill Simmons?

It's no for Meryl Streep. I don't know what her apex mountain was and she probably just is on top of the mountain, just with chilling.

• 1:20:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:24Bill Simmons?

I don't know if she even had an apex mountain.

• 1:20:26Speaker 03

I'm kind of with you on Devil Wears Prada.

• 1:20:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:29Bill Simmons?

It's like the two versions of her, right? Like early Meryl Streep is like mid eighties and then second career.

• 1:20:36Speaker 02

  Is probably.

• 1:20:36Bill Simmons?

Tom Brady, 22 three game Meryl Streep.

• 1:20:40Speaker 02

You could argue she does Devil Wears Prada and then does Mamma Mia, which makes like almost a billion dollars.

• 1:20:46Bill Simmons?

Leading to this and then to Iron Lady.

• 1:20:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:20:49Speaker 03

She's just, I was kind of saying this when you talked about Brady, but she didn't have a dead period. There's like no skips on her, like every decade she has classics. She's still make, like, Don't Look Up, which is flawed movie.

• 1:21:03Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:21:03Speaker 03

She's so funny in it, in a small role. I mean, she's just big, our, RIP Big Little Lies.

• 1:21:09Speaker 02

She was so good at it.

• 1:21:10Speaker 03

  She was so funny.

• 1:21:11Speaker 02

And otherwise, I don't know what happened, but you know, I like literally actually don't remember how it ended.

• 1:21:16Speaker 03

Entire series. The only thing I remember from the season that you and I recapped is Meryl Streep screaming.

• 1:21:22Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:21:22Speaker 03

  At the table.

• 1:21:24Bill Simmons?

  I missed that show.

• 1:21:25Speaker 02

Are they gonna, did they make a third season or have they just talked about it?

• 1:21:29Bill Simmons?

They're making it just as different shows that are on like Hulu.

• 1:21:32Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:21:32Bill Simmons?

Where it's like, and then nobody's figured out how to crack it.

• 1:21:35Speaker 02

It's like, what if Nancy Meyers went super dark? Yes, listen, I would watch all of it, but I still don't actually remember how it ended. All blank.

• 1:21:44Bill Simmons?

Realtor for best rom com job?

• 1:21:46Speaker 02

  It's not bad.

• 1:21:47Bill Simmons?

Own your own real estate place?

• 1:21:48Speaker 06

It's not bad. It's no architect.

• 1:21:49Bill Simmons?

Like, what about like corporate real estate?

• 1:21:52Speaker 02

Yeah, like real estate investor. How about that?

• 1:21:55Bill Simmons?

  Building office buildings?

• 1:21:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:21:56Speaker 06

I got a humdinger here. Ready? Marine biologist.

• 1:22:00Speaker 02

Yeah, but then, so. Never seen one with a marine biologist.

• 1:22:03Speaker 06

  Cause you're like animal lover.

• 1:22:05Speaker 02

That's just what kids wanna be when you're just thinking about what kids wanna be when they grow up.

• 1:22:08Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:09Speaker 06

But that's what these characters are.

• 1:22:10Speaker 02

Two weeks notice, starring Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant, I think, pretty underrated, even though Donald Trump is in it. They, they call her like boyfriend that she never sees, and it's not a real relationship, is a marine biologist, I think, for like. In two weeks notice? Seapiece or something. And so he's never around. So that's the thing about marine biologists is they're unavailable. Female, female job in a rom com, sportswriter. There's been a few over the years. Oh, yeah. It's happened a few times, which I feel like. Are any of them good? No. At sportswriting? Oh, I'll see the movies. I don't think there's any good ones with female sportswriters. Is Zoe Deutsch in Set It Up? Yes, she wants to be a sportswriter. Yes.

• 1:22:52Speaker 02

Right. Yeah, yeah. Remember, that's the one with Tom Powell and like the fake Ringer?

• 1:22:57Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, I remember that one.

• 1:22:58Speaker 02

Lucy Liu. That movie is one of the best rom coms.

• 1:23:01Bill Simmons?

Wasn't it? Was it Fake Ringer or Fake Grantland?

• 1:23:03Speaker 02

It was during Ringer time, but you know, probably with turnaround, it's Fake Grantland. They didn't, they didn't have podcasts.

• 1:23:09Bill Simmons?

What would be the best ESPN job for a rom com?

• 1:23:12Speaker 02

For the man or the woman?

• 1:23:13Bill Simmons?

  Head. It could be either.

• 1:23:17Bill Simmons?

Like could it be a PTI co-host? Rom-com, Can't Find Love in Washington?

• 1:23:22Speaker 06

  Sideline reporter?

• 1:23:23Speaker 03

Sideline reporter is the answer. Good job. Yeah. Cause you set up so many good-

• 1:23:27Bill Simmons?

  That's the perfect one.

• 1:23:28Speaker 03

You set up so many like funny moments with player. This is why Trainwreck, I think, made him sports doctor to- For the setup, the set pieces that came out of that and also to get LeBron James in the movie.

• 1:23:39Speaker 02

I thought LeBron was good in it.

• 1:23:40Bill Simmons?

LeBron was good in that movie.

• 1:23:42Speaker 02

  He was very funny.

• 1:23:42Bill Simmons?

  I support LeBron's performance.

• 1:23:43Speaker 03

One of the better athlete acting performances.

• 1:23:45Bill Simmons?

Alec Baldwin, Apex Mountain, it might be. With this and 30 Rock at the same time and SNL and he's like-

• 1:23:52Speaker 03

  This character.

• 1:23:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:23:53Bill Simmons?

Steve Martin, no. Steve Martin's apex was the late 70s when he had The Jerk and the number one comedy album. And was selling out arenas everywhere and was the best SNL host and-

• 1:24:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:24:04Bill Simmons?

His and her sinks, Apex Mountain?

• 1:24:06Speaker 02

Oh, well, did he get rid of it?

• 1:24:08Bill Simmons?

Has there been more conversation about his and her sinks in a movie ever?

• 1:24:12Speaker 02

I'm literally thinking through the other Nancy Meyers movies.

• 1:24:14Bill Simmons?

I thought you made a good case about-

• 1:24:16Speaker 02

Yeah, and it makes me feel bad.

• 1:24:17Bill Simmons?

  Just makes you feel bad.

• 1:24:18Speaker 03

Yeah, but then Steve Martin says, well, maybe you might want the his.

• 1:24:21Speaker 02

I gotta tell you though, we finally got his and her sinks after-

• 1:24:25Bill Simmons?

  They're a must.

• 1:24:26Speaker 02

They're just not waiting to brush your teeth is absolutely, it's the little things, you know, that change your life.

• 1:24:33Speaker 03

Are you guilty of the same creep as I am where my stuff is just slowly migrated over and taken over the entire vanity?

• 1:24:40Bill Simmons?

  The double sink situation.

• 1:24:41Speaker 02

We actually have separate, like, there's a, there's a big, like, separate basins and the counter doesn't go- No, it's, um, but then I do use Zach's sometimes for like other stuff. Cause mine is like full of everything and so then I gotta go over and use his counter space.

• 1:25:00Bill Simmons?

Nancy Meyers. I think it's The Holiday.

• 1:25:05Speaker 02

  Well, The Holiday-

• 1:25:05Bill Simmons?

Didn't The Holiday make like a shitload of money?

• 1:25:07Speaker 02

  Yeah. Did it?

• 1:25:08Bill Simmons?

It's gotta be The Holiday. I thought it did.

• 1:25:10Speaker 02

  I think that, I think that's-

• 1:25:11Bill Simmons?

  It's something's gotta give?

• 1:25:12Speaker 02

Yeah, I think because I, let's do Nancy Meyers box office really quickly. Cause if I recall, The Holiday did like-

• 1:25:17Bill Simmons?

  The Holiday crushed.

• 1:25:18Speaker 02

  Nancy, I might be wrong.

• 1:25:21Speaker 06

They all make about 200 million.

• 1:25:23Speaker 02

Well, I think that's true, but I think The Holiday was a little bit lower in domestically and then-

• 1:25:31Bill Simmons?

All right, so we'll go something that's gotta give.

• 1:25:32Speaker 02

  Something's gotta give also gets-

• 1:25:34Speaker 03

  More nominations, right?

• 1:25:36Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:25:36Speaker 03

And acting, I mean, Something's Gotta Give is a better movie. I love this movie. I'm thrilled to re-watch it. But I actually re-watched Something's Gotta Give this weekend as well.

• 1:25:46Bill Simmons?

  Oh, lucky, yeah.

• 1:25:46Speaker 03

I'm a completist. And that was actually kind of a mistake because the compare, when you watch them back to back.

• 1:25:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:25:52Speaker 03

Something's Gotta Give is slightly better.

• 1:25:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:25:55Bill Simmons?

I think I agree with that.

• 1:25:56Speaker 02

It, I, I mean, it is, but.

• 1:25:57Speaker 03

  Performances.

• 1:25:58Bill Simmons?

But I enjoy this movie more because it's funnier and there's more stuff to make fun of.

• 1:26:01Speaker 02

Completely, I'm a hun- with you a hundred percent.

• 1:26:03Bill Simmons?

We don't get three zombie unemployed kids and Something's Gotta Give. The worst couple movies?

• 1:26:11Speaker 02

  Uh, not The Apex, but.

• 1:26:13Bill Simmons?

Where the couple is still, it centers around the couple being divorced, but still being together?

• 1:26:18Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, sorry to be Sean for a second, but then there is like a whole.

• 1:26:23Bill Simmons?

Well, you go the 50s, 60s.

• 1:26:24Speaker 02

Yeah, the, the comedy of remarriage, like His Girl Friday, they're divorced, you know? And then they wind up together.

• 1:26:30Bill Simmons?

The greatest thing you did there was to be sorry to be Sean there for a second, which somehow felt insulting, which I loved.

• 1:26:35Speaker 03

I was, I was, I was like, I know she's gonna say something pretentious.

• 1:26:38Speaker 02

  Yeah, no, I.

• 1:26:39Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:26:39Speaker 03

And I don't know what direction.

• 1:26:40Speaker 02

  His Girl Friday, good movie.

• 1:26:41Speaker 03

I didn't, you're, I, I thought you were gonna go like some French movie or like a separation, the Iranian movie about divorce, which is amazing.

• 1:26:48Speaker 02

Yeah, no, just like basically in the 40s and 50s.

• 1:26:51Speaker 03

His Girl Friday, I think Nancy Meyers has said is like one of her greatest influences as a film.

• 1:26:55Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:26:55Speaker 03

  It shows up all over.

• 1:26:56Speaker 02

I'm all of the screwball comedies, yeah.

• 1:26:57Speaker 03

  Philadelphia Story.

• 1:26:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:26:59Bill Simmons?

  Krasinski, no.

• 1:27:02Speaker 02

  No, but close.

• 1:27:04Bill Simmons?

It's not The Quiet Place? I mean, they did that movie.

• 1:27:06Speaker 02

That's a great point. I forgot about that. Yeah, and marrying Emily Blunt.

• 1:27:10Bill Simmons?

I do like this version of Krasinski I'm good with.

• 1:27:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:27:14Bill Simmons?

I didn't like when, whatever this new version is.

• 1:27:16Speaker 06

Chris Pratt ruined him because he saw what Chris Pratt did.

• 1:27:18Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:19Speaker 06

And then was like, I could do that.

• 1:27:20Bill Simmons?

And who's the other guy, uh, Camille?

• 1:27:24Speaker 06

  Nagyanni?

• 1:27:25Bill Simmons?

Yeah, when he did the superhero movie and then all of a sudden he got buffed.

• 1:27:28Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:27:28Bill Simmons?

Anyone who's like, look how buff I am now, he's just like, put a fucking clock on that when that's gonna go badly. Uh, Nancy Meyers Houses, probably the holiday that won.

• 1:27:38Speaker 02

  Oh, the, the Cotswolds?

• 1:27:40Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:40Speaker 02

  The British House?

• 1:27:41Bill Simmons?

  Yeah, that's pretty great.

• 1:27:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:27:43Speaker 03

  This is the best kitchen.

• 1:27:45Bill Simmons?

  I agree with that.

• 1:27:46Speaker 02

Whoa, whoa, whoa, the Something's Gotta Give kitchen, guys, come on.

• 1:27:49Bill Simmons?

  This kitchen's great.

• 1:27:50Speaker 02

But this, there's Something's Gotta Give, it's got the island. And then it also has like the wraparound counter, so you can use the island for cooking. Plus, people can be sitting at the counter. There's more storage space. I don't want to get into it, but there are cabinets. You know, um, I think it's just, it's, it's roomier.

• 1:28:09Speaker 03

  It's a little more conventional.

• 1:28:10Speaker 02

Yeah, it is, it is, this is, this is lived in. But like, she does have, like, an Ikea storage thing on the, okay, well, now we just have unlock your tree bathroom mats.

• 1:28:21Bill Simmons?

Oh, man, look at the internet these days.

• 1:28:23Speaker 03

This is the Something's Gotta Give kitchen we are looking at.

• 1:28:25Speaker 02

  Yeah, come on.

• 1:28:26Speaker 03

  That's a giant island.

• 1:28:27Speaker 02

I know. Do you know, in real life, Nancy does two kitchen islands. Did you know this?

• 1:28:32Speaker 03

  Really? No, I didn't.

• 1:28:32Speaker 02

Yeah, she has one for cooking and one for stuff.

• 1:28:34Bill Simmons?

  Nancy does love the islands.

• 1:28:35Speaker 03

  So.

• 1:28:35Speaker 02

  Well, so do I.

• 1:28:36Speaker 03

You guys, I'm sure, have read or heard her speak about being like, having mixed feelings about the fact that people are so obsessed with the interiors in her movies, or that.

• 1:28:46Bill Simmons?

  Really? I would think so.

• 1:28:47Speaker 02

Yeah, she doesn't like it at all. Because I think she finds it reductive. And I think to the review that Mina, or the reviews that Mina was talking about. Like, it is often discussed as, you know, fluff, as opposed to.

• 1:29:01Speaker 03

It's for chicks, it's for older women, it's escapism.

• 1:29:04Speaker 02

  Not with respect for actually.

• 1:29:06Bill Simmons?

Nancy, if you're listening, please don't feel that way.

• 1:29:07Speaker 02

Yeah, Nancy, this is hard work.

• 1:29:08Bill Simmons?

  We love this shit.

• 1:29:09Speaker 02

It's production design, it's like, it is actual, it's character development, I, it's, she has a gift.

• 1:29:16Speaker 03

I feel, again, to go back to like the John Wick analogy of a genre film, it is like a beautifully choreographed fight. Like, it's taking an element of a genre film and cranking it up to eleven and doing it in a better level than anyone else.

• 1:29:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:29:28Bill Simmons?

Nancy shouldn't feel that way. It's like my mispronunciations and factual errors that the audience enjoys.

• 1:29:35Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:29:35Bill Simmons?

  I embrace it.

• 1:29:36Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:29:36Bill Simmons?

I'm super happy that they can share that with me.

• 1:29:39Speaker 02

  Croque monsieur, one more time.

• 1:29:42Bill Simmons?

That might have been my toughest whatever.

• 1:29:44Speaker 03

  Monsieur?

• 1:29:44Speaker 02

  I think it's.

• 1:29:47Bill Simmons?

  Chris couldn't say it either.

• 1:29:48Speaker 02

  I'm not French. I think it's like Monsieur. But it's like, even though it's spelled M O N.

• 1:29:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:29:53Speaker 02

  I don't know. Don't, don't rate me.

• 1:29:54Speaker 03

My first date with my husband, I confidently ordered broccoli rabe.

• 1:29:59Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:30:00Speaker 03

And have gotten shit about that for ever.

• 1:30:03Speaker 02

Forever. I thought it was Tame Impala instead of Tame Impala. I don't know. I don't know. I just, I didn't hear it said outside for a long time. And then I just, that's what I thought. Anyway, we're all here.

• 1:30:15Bill Simmons?

The mispronunciation things are so funny.

• 1:30:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:30:17Bill Simmons?

We, we were in a wedding in Pittsburgh and one of my college roommates, Blue Boy, we drove by Duquesne University and he said, hey, it's Duquesne. We still, 30 years later, it still comes up. Like, can't get enough of it. Lake Bell, Caitlin Fitzgerald, no. Zoe Kazan, no. And we'll go to Cruise or Hanks. I think this is a Hanks movie.

• 1:30:35Speaker 02

  Yeah, a thousand percent.

• 1:30:37Bill Simmons?

  I don't, Cruise in this movie. I don't know.

• 1:30:39Speaker 03

Hanks is the architect runs away with it. Like.

• 1:30:42Speaker 02

  Totally.

• 1:30:43Bill Simmons?

It would have been a good one.

• 1:30:44Speaker 02

Yeah, but like, maybe there's less tension.

• 1:30:46Bill Simmons?

  Scorsese or Spielberg? Spielberg.

• 1:30:48Speaker 02

Oh, I think Scorsese. Give me a gritty version. Give me like.

• 1:30:52Bill Simmons?

  Gritty Santa Barbara?

• 1:30:54Speaker 02

Well, maybe, maybe it's not Santa Barbara.

• 1:30:56Speaker 03

Kramer versus Kramer is the gritty version.

• 1:30:57Speaker 02

Yeah, maybe it's New York, but she like, doesn't know what to do and she's spiraling, spiraling out and like, the one joint becomes.

• 1:31:02Bill Simmons?

  Pot turns into cocaine.

• 1:31:03Speaker 02

Yeah. And it's just like, what do I do? I like fucked up my whole life and now I'm, you know, sleeping with my ex-husband.

• 1:31:09Bill Simmons?

  Playing.

• 1:31:09Speaker 02

Yeah. Then the kids are actually screwed up.

• 1:31:12Bill Simmons?

  Does the head bob back?

• 1:31:13Speaker 02

Yeah, there we go. She's already kind of doing the head bob just for different reasons.

• 1:31:17Bill Simmons?

What role would Philip Seymour Hoffman have played? The Steve Martin part would have been interesting.

• 1:31:22Speaker 02

  Plastic surgeon.

• 1:31:25Bill Simmons?

  Oh.

• 1:31:25Speaker 02

He would be so funny at that.

• 1:31:27Bill Simmons?

He could have also young Philip Seymour Hoffman as the youngest kid.

• 1:31:30Speaker 02

  Sure.

• 1:31:31Bill Simmons?

Just as we keep recasting that guy.

• 1:31:34Bill Simmons?

Picky Nets, why did they break up in the first place?

• 1:31:38Bill Simmons?

I don't know. It seemed like they had a lot of chemistry. I guess he just got a little randy with Agnes.

• 1:31:43Speaker 02

And then, why did he marry Agnes? It's very confusing.

• 1:31:47Bill Simmons?

Well, it seems like she, and then she cheated on him with somebody else and then they got back together.

• 1:31:52Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, it's a little, it strains credulity.

• 1:31:56Speaker 03

I think that they throw that in to not, to make us not feel sorry for her. Not that we should anyways, because she is already the other woman. But I think that little bit of biographical data is so that we as audience have total permission to be like, screw that woman.

• 1:32:09Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:32:10Speaker 03

She was complicit in one affair, she had another affair, it's not even his kid. Like, if it was his kid, I actually think we would have felt maybe a little bit differently about him skipping out on them.

• 1:32:21Bill Simmons?

There's a lot of moves to make us not like her over two hours in this movie. Krasinski's picking it. Uh, Krasinski's definitely telling his wife immediately. I just saw your dad and your mom going up into a hotel elevator and they're about to fuck and you should know this right now. Nobody's hiding that information. You don't hide shit from your spouses like that.

• 1:32:43Speaker 03

Especially that, because it's not, it's not, it's not actually like bad.

• 1:32:48Speaker 02

  Well.

• 1:32:50Bill Simmons?

I like, I wouldn't, I wouldn't be able to wait to tell my wife that this was happening. I was like, you're not gonna believe what I just saw.

• 1:32:56Speaker 02

That I don't have any information like this in my real life. But I am thinking a little bit about, I don't know, no, not Patrick Swayze. Swayze just got it to the mix. He's like, what?

• 1:33:08Speaker 03

  Like he's leaning in.

• 1:33:09Bill Simmons?

  Swayze agreed.

• 1:33:11Speaker 02

There are some things where to protect the other person, it's like, do you need to know this thing that's gonna just like freak you out for no reason?

• 1:33:18Bill Simmons?

There's something wrong with her, which there might be, the way they present her.

• 1:33:22Speaker 03

  We're drawing a line here.

• 1:33:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:33:24Speaker 03

Which is there's two types of people and Bill and I both love. Being the purveyors of gossip.

• 1:33:29Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:33:30Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:33:32Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:33:33Speaker 03

Texting relationship is built on this foundation. I love nothing more than going to the group chat with like a.

• 1:33:38Speaker 02

I mean, sure, I love also having gossip and sharing the gossip, but like she would probably have a meltdown as she eventually does. So.

• 1:33:48Bill Simmons?

Does she? Like she put pajamas on outside for one minute?

• 1:33:51Speaker 02

Yeah. I don't, I guess I would tell the person, but I don't know if I would run. It wouldn't feel like I found out this amazing story about like someone else's marriage or someone else's something. You know what I mean? It would feel a little bit more like I gotta tell you this thing that's going on.

• 1:34:04Bill Simmons?

Father-in-law and his mother-in-law sneaking up this elevator to go fuck each other. Like, he's definitely telling his.

• 1:34:10Speaker 02

Yeah, he is, but I don't think he's gonna be like, can you like, you know, it's, it's not like the.

• 1:34:16Bill Simmons?

Yeah, me and him, I'd be more excited.

• 1:34:19Speaker 03

I would be texting as I'm walking away from them to 20 people.

• 1:34:22Speaker 02

I don't think that I would be Meryl being like, I'm having an affair with Agnes Adler's husband, you know?

• 1:34:27Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:27Speaker 03

I would tell my partner, I would tell it as a blind item to people I know who have never met them. You would not know what just happened to me and post a Reddit thread.

• 1:34:37Bill Simmons?

Any other pick and nits? We did a lot already.

• 1:34:39Speaker 03

  Uh, I have one.

• 1:34:40Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:34:40Speaker 03

Do we think the laptop scene was believable? Like the, like the, whatever their 2009, are they like iChatting or video chatting?

• 1:34:50Speaker 02

Oh, yeah, it was, they were very quick to, to like Skyping or whatever that you were doing.

• 1:34:55Speaker 03

  Baldwin, the computers open there.

• 1:34:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:34:59Speaker 03

He sees it, he's looking straight at it and he still gets.

• 1:35:02Bill Simmons?

What he's trying to do in that scene.

• 1:35:04Speaker 02

  I guess he's like.

• 1:35:05Bill Simmons?

  Like, he's, the computer's.

• 1:35:07Speaker 02

He's seducing her. Yeah, but it's like a fig leaf, but instead of a fig leaf, it's a computer screen.

• 1:35:11Speaker 03

But even in 2009, surely you would look at the computer screen before putting your junk in front of it.

• 1:35:17Speaker 02

You, I agree with all of that. I have, my nitpick is like a two seconds later in that very scene, which is just like the butt double that you mentioned, like.

• 1:35:25Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:26Speaker 02

It's smooth as a baby's bottom. And that's just not very convincing, given the amount of body here that we're seeing on the rest of Alec Baldwin. Yeah. It's just, it's a very obvious butt double. I have one more also.

• 1:35:37Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:35:37Speaker 02

Chocolate croissants are usually square. Thank you.

• 1:35:42Speaker 02

They are, and they roll them up. Yeah. Yeah, they're like Pillsbury dough things. But when you buy, you know, I bought one yesterday and it was, it was square. It was delicious.

• 1:35:50Bill Simmons?

  They're really great.

• 1:35:51Speaker 02

  They're so good.

• 1:35:52Bill Simmons?

  Really, really delicious.

• 1:35:53Speaker 03

There's never enough chocolate for me. I'm always like eating around it.

• 1:35:56Bill Simmons?

  Well, I think that's what

• 1:35:57Speaker 02

  You and my son.

• 1:35:57Bill Simmons?

That was the secret with her with, uh, in the movie.

• 1:36:01Speaker 03

Oh, she gets all the chocolate.

• 1:36:02Bill Simmons?

Jane's, I think there's a lot of chocolate in the croissants.

• 1:36:05Speaker 06

Also, it takes like days to make a croissant.

• 1:36:09Speaker 02

  Does it?

• 1:36:09Speaker 06

You gotta let the dough sit. You, you don't just crank a croissant out.

• 1:36:12Speaker 02

Well, then maybe that dough was already there. Do you see them mixing it?

• 1:36:16Speaker 06

Yeah, she's running the dough through the thing to thin it out.

• 1:36:19Speaker 02

Well, yeah, but maybe that dough was made and set and then she's thinning it out before. They are handling the dough a lot for what I, I'm not an expert.

• 1:36:27Speaker 06

For like a midnight croissant. One, it's perfect.

• 1:36:29Speaker 02

You're not supposed to get that handsy with dough, as I understand it. It toughens it up. Anyway.

• 1:36:35Bill Simmons?

My thing is for the amount of time it takes to make a cookie versus the amount of time it makes to, it takes to make a croissant.

• 1:36:42Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:36:43Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:36:43Bill Simmons?

The disparity of quality is not worth the extra time. I'd rather just have the cookie. Just have a really good chocolate chip cookie versus like, I'm gonna spend three more days making this chocolate croissant.

• 1:36:53Speaker 06

It's a very patient thing for them to do as two high people.

• 1:36:55Speaker 03

I have been almost shunned from my family for having box of baked goods, taking a chocolate croissant and just taking out the chocolate part and eating it.

• 1:37:06Speaker 03

Cause I don't wanna eat the rest of it. You know, there's like a strip in the middle of chocolate.

• 1:37:10Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:37:10Speaker 03

Rip off the other sides of it.

• 1:37:12Speaker 02

I'll do that with the bottom of the croissant because that's where the chocolate and the butter meet the pan. And so the dough is extra chocolatey buttery.

• 1:37:21Bill Simmons?

  It's making me hungry.

• 1:37:22Speaker 02

  I know.

• 1:37:25Bill Simmons?

Sequel, prequel prestige to be all black cast or untouchable. I'd actually be in for the all black cast for this one.

• 1:37:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, absolutely.

• 1:37:32Bill Simmons?

I'd run that back. I'd be, I, I got kind of excited thinking about it. Maybe that's what Netflix could do.

• 1:37:36Speaker 02

I would also watch a prequel that is why they got divorced. I mean, and it would be gnarly. It wouldn't feel as good.

• 1:37:44Speaker 03

  That's Kramer versus Kramer.

• 1:37:45Speaker 02

It is sort of Kramer versus Kramer, but you know, whatever's, um, the whole Santa Barbara scene, the affair, what's, whatever's going on with Lake Bell, I'd watch it.

• 1:37:53Speaker 03

Her movies never really put you in the pain.

• 1:37:56Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:37:56Speaker 03

And I think that's part of why they're so enjoyable to rewatch is like, I'm never gonna feel that bad.

• 1:38:01Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:38:02Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:38:02Speaker 03

The worst I'm gonna feel is when at the very end, like, oh, Alec Baldwin's not gonna get by.

• 1:38:06Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:38:07Speaker 03

  That's it.

• 1:38:08Bill Simmons?

Is this movie better with Wayne Jenkins, Danny Trell, Doris Burke, Sam Jackson? No, Byron Mayo, Tony Romo, Chris Collinsworth, Daniel Plainboof, Long Legs? Or Wilford Brimley? In The Firm? Since me and Sarah, we gotta do football. I think Tony Romo.

• 1:38:25Speaker 03

  As you?

• 1:38:26Bill Simmons?

No, Tony Romo announcing the laptop scene.

• 1:38:29Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah. Oh, that's funny.

• 1:38:30Speaker 02

Jim Bob, let's get this badge in. He's going for it. I was also thinking football, but what about Chris Collinsworth just at the bakery? Ordering?

• 1:38:38Speaker 06

  Oh, my.

• 1:38:39Speaker 02

Doesn't he look like in a little quarter vest?

• 1:38:41Bill Simmons?

  Oh, my.

• 1:38:41Speaker 02

  You can see it, right?

• 1:38:42Bill Simmons?

Look at these chocolate socks, Mike. They look so good.

• 1:38:45Speaker 03

  Here is the guy.

• 1:38:47Bill Simmons?

  Oh, man.

• 1:38:48Speaker 03

He has a little bit of a romantic comedy energy to him.

• 1:38:52Speaker 02

  Chris?

• 1:38:52Bill Simmons?

  Chris Collinsworth.

• 1:38:52Speaker 02

You can see him in the mix here.

• 1:38:54Bill Simmons?

This bakery smells so good, Mike. Football's coming back, Craig.

• 1:38:57Speaker 06

Collinsworth is a sneaky Liz Kelly crush.

• 1:39:00Bill Simmons?

  Really?

• 1:39:01Speaker 06

She thinks he's kind of a silver fox.

• 1:39:03Bill Simmons?

We're less than, what are we, eight weeks away now? As we tape this on Monday, July 7?

• 1:39:08Speaker 03

I did division previews this week.

• 1:39:09Bill Simmons?

Holy mackerel. Just one Oscar, who gets it? Interesting question.

• 1:39:15Speaker 03

  Alec Baldwin.

• 1:39:16Speaker 02

  Alec Baldwin.

• 1:39:16Speaker 03

  Alec Baldwin.

• 1:39:17Speaker 02

Absolutely. He's away with this movie. It's a classic supporting actor, fun one. I'm for it.

• 1:39:23Bill Simmons?

Do you want to quickly go through the 2010 Oscars?

• 1:39:26Speaker 02

  Yeah, of course.

• 1:39:28Bill Simmons?

Who? We go 2000. I'm always so confused with the Oscars. It's like the Super Bowl. There we go.

• 1:39:32Speaker 03

Yeah, like, what do we call it? The 2009 season?

• 1:39:35Bill Simmons?

All right, supporting actor. Wow. Christoph Waltz in Bastards.

• 1:39:40Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, he should win.

• 1:39:43Bill Simmons?

  Stanley Tucci, Lovely Bones.

• 1:39:45Speaker 02

  Yeah, we could replace it.

• 1:39:46Bill Simmons?

Christopher Plummer in The Last Station. Woody Harrelson in The Messenger. Matt Damon in Invictus. What the hell is going on in there?

• 1:39:54Speaker 03

  Invictus?

• 1:39:54Bill Simmons?

Jesus, Baldwin could have snuck in there.

• 1:39:56Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 1:39:57Bill Simmons?

Yeah. Glad we did that. Probably an answerable question.

• 1:40:03Bill Simmons?

Does Jack have a job? What's his job? Does he have an office? Where's he going? Does he have time to just drive, hang out at his wife's driveway?

• 1:40:13Speaker 02

  Jake?

• 1:40:13Speaker 03

  Jake.

• 1:40:14Bill Simmons?

  Jake.

• 1:40:14Speaker 03

  He's a lawyer, right?

• 1:40:15Speaker 02

  He made partner.

• 1:40:16Bill Simmons?

  Did I say Jack?

• 1:40:17Speaker 02

  Yeah, you said Jack, yeah.

• 1:40:18Bill Simmons?

The gas is really starting to get, the gasoline in my sleeve. Jake? But Jake, no cases?

• 1:40:24Speaker 03

He does have a lot of time.

• 1:40:25Speaker 02

Yeah. I mean, what, what kind of lawyer? And what kind of business?

• 1:40:29Bill Simmons?

Does he take a work call?

• 1:40:30Speaker 02

Is the Santa Barbara firm scene? Like, what? All the people who have money in Santa Barbara, what's it from? Like, oil, aerospace?

• 1:40:38Bill Simmons?

It's probably a lot of, like, real estate disputes.

• 1:40:39Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:40:40Bill Simmons?

And like, trying to sue companies that are trying to build-

• 1:40:42Speaker 03

I have a friend who grew up there with money and his dad is a lawyer. No, his mom is a lawyer and his dad is a doctor.

• 1:40:49Speaker 02

  Oh, okay.

• 1:40:49Speaker 03

And I think that's it. I think it's like doctors and lawyers.

• 1:40:52Speaker 02

  Oh, wow.

• 1:40:52Speaker 03

  And retired people.

• 1:40:54Bill Simmons?

Is this the Meryl Streep laugh record for a movie? I think it has to be. It's like over 120 Meryl Streep laughs.

• 1:41:01Speaker 02

Yeah, probably. Nervous laughs, funny laughs.

• 1:41:03Bill Simmons?

Like, one to two a minute.

• 1:41:04Speaker 02

  Uncomfortable laugh.

• 1:41:05Bill Simmons?

  1.12 laughs per minute.

• 1:41:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:41:09Bill Simmons?

In this. I have one more, if you guys have any, if either of you have one. I have a really good one.

• 1:41:15Speaker 03

  What is it?

• 1:41:16Speaker 02

  I mean, I do, I would-

• 1:41:17Bill Simmons?

It is probably an answerable question.

• 1:41:18Speaker 02

I would like to know what's in the noodle thing that they talk about and fight over at the end.

• 1:41:23Speaker 03

I thought it might, they show a pasta salad earlier and I was thinking maybe-

• 1:41:26Speaker 02

The green one, like the pesto-esque type thing?

• 1:41:29Speaker 03

Yeah, the cherry tomatoes looking in it. And Meryl's maybe hungry.

• 1:41:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:41:33Bill Simmons?

All right, here's my unanswerable question. Should it be okay to have an affair with your ex-wife?

• 1:41:39Speaker 02

Like, so you're remarried? Or ex-

• 1:41:43Speaker 03

  I have a lot of-

• 1:41:44Bill Simmons?

So- Should the first wife have territorial dibs for eternity? Regardless of what happens with future marriages?

• 1:41:51Speaker 03

I, okay, so you guys are, you're in the, this is your lives.

• 1:41:55Bill Simmons?

This is the kind of content we need, Craig.

• 1:41:56Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:41:58Speaker 03

Uh, my take is, this kind of connects to what we were talking about, Lake Bell's character. If the second wife is who you left her for, green light.

• 1:42:09Bill Simmons?

  Green, so, oh, interesting.

• 1:42:11Speaker 02

Oh, that's, okay, good one. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:42:13Speaker 03

She knew what she was buying into.

• 1:42:15Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:42:16Speaker 03

If, however, you get divorced, you met someone else, not cool.

• 1:42:21Bill Simmons?

So it has to be some sort of connection to the first marriage.

• 1:42:24Speaker 02

  I think that's a, I think that's a good rule.

• 1:42:25Speaker 03

  Is that fair?

• 1:42:26Speaker 02

  Yeah. Yes.

• 1:42:28Bill Simmons?

I think I agree with that.

• 1:42:29Speaker 02

  I'm, I'm okay with it.

• 1:42:30Speaker 03

No one watching this movie feels an ounce of sympathy for Lake Bell's character at any point. And the movie takes great pains.

• 1:42:37Bill Simmons?

But if he had, they got divorced and he had just married some like, school teacher who's like a kindergarten teacher.

• 1:42:42Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:42:43Bill Simmons?

Then you, you start feeling bad.

• 1:42:44Speaker 03

Would, okay, let me, okay, the age factor. What if he was with a woman his age?

• 1:42:50Speaker 02

I still think, you made the key distinction, which is if, if the spouse cheated with the new, you know, the new spouse.

• 1:43:01Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:02Speaker 02

Then the, like, the other person, the third person, is fair game. Maybe doesn't have dibs, but it's not bad. You're not a bad person.

• 1:43:10Bill Simmons?

I'm really glad we talked this out.

• 1:43:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:43:12Bill Simmons?

What piece of memorabilia would you want or not want from this movie? It can't be any of the food, because food.

• 1:43:16Speaker 02

  Or the house.

• 1:43:17Bill Simmons?

  Or the house.

• 1:43:18Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:43:21Speaker 02

  Garden hat?

• 1:43:23Speaker 02

Merrill's garden hat? I thought it looked pretty good. I told you, I'm in the market for a wider brimmed hat.

• 1:43:28Speaker 03

  Are you gardening?

• 1:43:30Speaker 02

  We're trying. We're doing some.

• 1:43:31Speaker 03

  Get that great little terrace.

• 1:43:33Speaker 02

Yeah, no, I mean, like, listen, we already had to get rid of one plant, but listen, they teach the children to garden at like, at preschool now, so my son has a little basil plant that he wants to, so we're trying to keep one thing alive for Knox.

• 1:43:47Bill Simmons?

I didn't have an answer for this one. I wouldn't want any memorabilia from this movie.

• 1:43:51Speaker 02

  All right.

• 1:43:51Bill Simmons?

Couldn't come up with one thing.

• 1:43:52Speaker 02

  Cars aren't eligible either, right?

• 1:43:54Bill Simmons?

  No.

• 1:43:54Speaker 02

  Because you don't.

• 1:43:54Bill Simmons?

I thought like, the fake joints they use for this could be fun.

• 1:43:57Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:43:57Bill Simmons?

But I don't know where you would, like, who would I show that to?

• 1:44:00Speaker 03

  Right.

• 1:44:00Bill Simmons?

Like, hey, come into, come into my study. The fake joint from It's Complicated. I don't know.

• 1:44:06Speaker 02

  Do you garden?

• 1:44:07Bill Simmons?

Maybe the sign of the, was there a sign of the bakery she owned?

• 1:44:10Speaker 03

I don't think they show the outside of it ever, only the inside. Um, I don't garden.

• 1:44:15Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:44:15Speaker 03

But I, you know, I bake, but no gardening.

• 1:44:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:44:18Bill Simmons?

The Coach Finstock Award, Best Life Lesson. I think it's okay to hook up with your ex-husband if she, if he's with the person that.

• 1:44:29Bill Simmons?

That he had the fair one.

• 1:44:31Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:44:31Bill Simmons?

I think we've just figured that out.

• 1:44:32Speaker 02

  So we solved it.

• 1:44:33Bill Simmons?

  I think that's now a life lesson.

• 1:44:33Speaker 02

Okay, that's good. Let's afford it.

• 1:44:36Bill Simmons?

Best double feature choice, Mina, what do you have? And is this movie first or second in the double feature?

• 1:44:41Speaker 03

It's Something's Gotta Give. I would not watch this if Something's Gotta Give, actually.

• 1:44:45Speaker 02

  You wouldn't?

• 1:44:46Speaker 03

That is my recommend. After doing, literally doing that this weekend.

• 1:44:49Bill Simmons?

  Interesting.

• 1:44:49Speaker 03

Do not do it. They're too similar and this movie does not benefit from the comparison.

• 1:44:54Bill Simmons?

  Good to know.

• 1:44:54Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 1:44:56Speaker 03

I think it is Kramer, Kramer vs. Kramer and this movie would actually be a very funny double feature.

• 1:45:00Bill Simmons?

  That's a good one. I like that.

• 1:45:01Speaker 03

  The Meryl divorce.

• 1:45:02Speaker 02

Yeah, that's a good one. I have a slightly lighter weight one, which is Julie vs. Julia and Julia.

• 1:45:09Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:10Speaker 02

It's the same year, also Meryl Streep. You get one lesser but still enjoyable Nora Ephron, one like mid-tier but great Nancy Meyers.

• 1:45:21Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:45:21Speaker 02

  Same era. Compare and contrast.

• 1:45:24Bill Simmons?

  I'm doing a reconcilable differences.

• 1:45:27Speaker 02

  Oh, it's a good one.

• 1:45:28Bill Simmons?

  Which is not available anywhere.

• 1:45:29Speaker 02

Yeah, which is impossible to see.

• 1:45:30Bill Simmons?

God hates us. Who won the movie?

• 1:45:35Speaker 02

  Baldwin?

• 1:45:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:45:36Bill Simmons?

I think Baldwin won the movie.

• 1:45:38Speaker 02

  Yeah?

• 1:45:38Bill Simmons?

As good as Streep, as likable as she is in it, I think he's just really great in this.

• 1:45:43Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:45:45Speaker 03

Especially like someone who's reputation. Like I hadn't seen this movie since 2009 until rewatch. Or no, I'd seen it maybe once since then, but it's been a while. Rewatching it, I was shocked by how good he is in it. And I remember thinking at the time, but it's like, oh my God, what a performance.

• 1:45:59Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:46:00Bill Simmons?

  Craig, who won the movie?

• 1:46:01Speaker 06

  Baldwin for sure.

• 1:46:02Bill Simmons?

  Okay.

• 1:46:02Speaker 06

  Yeah.

• 1:46:03Bill Simmons?

What do you have for your thoughts?

• 1:46:04Speaker 06

Uh, I've seen this movie a couple of times. It's great. Super enjoyable. I think it's, I think it was better this time than when I had last watched it. Poor Ebert just didn't know what was coming. I mean, there was probably only five good rom-coms after this movie since then, right?

• 1:46:17Speaker 03

  True.

• 1:46:18Speaker 06

There's just not a lot out there and I think he was a little bit of an embarrassment of riches of rom-coms for a while. It was slowing down, I think, in the 2000s, but I also think this movie is like more about food than any movie that's not explicitly about food. Like I just, so many of the relationships are surrounded by food. I love the subtext of like, and I just noticed this this time, like the way Baldwin's character eats and interacts with her food versus how Steve Martin's character eats and interacts with her food is like very indicative of their relationships and the way they interact with one another. Even like the family, there's just so many, like the late night snacking after the, after the family dinner where they're all at the fridge, like eating the leftovers around the island. Um, the dinner party, her serving everybody, the late night ice cream, the drunk croissant. I just think this is one of the best

• 1:47:03Speaker 06

food movies ever and it's not really about food at all.

• 1:47:04Speaker 03

Are you saying it feels like everyone else is like entitled to her food and they expect it to just be around and? Yeah.

• 1:47:10Bill Simmons?

Or how they behave with the food. Like Momma's like a glutton.

• 1:47:13Speaker 03

Where's the noodles? Oh no, I finished it.

• 1:47:16Speaker 06

Yeah, and how indulgent he is with it. Um, him like coming over and eating the croque monsieur. Uh, even though it was like Steve Martin's, he doesn't give a shit.

• 1:47:23Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:47:23Speaker 06

Um, yeah, it's great. It's a mom com.

• 1:47:26Bill Simmons?

The youngest son is just smiling like a psychopath as he eats leftover noodles.

• 1:47:31Speaker 06

Yeah, the kids make no sense.

• 1:47:32Bill Simmons?

  Thinks about killing people.

• 1:47:34Speaker 06

I had a title idea. This was actually the title of a rom com that came five years later, which I never saw, but Meryl Streep in this movie refers to herself now as the other woman, which I thought would have been a good title.

• 1:47:44Speaker 03

Yeah, the other woman is a rom com. That's not as good.

• 1:47:46Speaker 02

That's a good one. Yeah, and it is not as good.

• 1:47:48Speaker 06

And she calls herself the other woman.

• 1:47:50Speaker 02

  Yeah, I mean, it's, it's funny.

• 1:47:51Bill Simmons?

  Who's in that one?

• 1:47:53Speaker 02

  It's Brooklyn Decker, right?

• 1:47:54Bill Simmons?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:54Speaker 02

  Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:47:57Speaker 03

  What you're talking about.

• 1:47:58Bill Simmons?

No, Kate Upton? It's Kate Upton.

• 1:47:59Speaker 02

  Is it?

• 1:48:00Speaker 06

  Yeah, it's Kate Upton.

• 1:48:01Speaker 02

Oh, wow. Okay. Well, I apologize.

• 1:48:03Speaker 06

Is it Leslie Mann? Who's the other, who's the other woman?

• 1:48:05Bill Simmons?

My wife likes that movie and The Sweetest Thing is a big, big favorite for her. Although she likes every rom com. I don't even know if it's, it's just, she likes all of them.

• 1:48:16Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:48:17Speaker 06

It's the biggest casualty of streaming, right? The rom com. It'll never come back to theaters.

• 1:48:20Bill Simmons?

  They're bad now.

• 1:48:21Speaker 02

  They just, they won't.

• 1:48:22Speaker 03

Set up was really good, I thought.

• 1:48:24Speaker 06

  It was.

• 1:48:24Speaker 03

  The Glenn Powell.

• 1:48:25Speaker 06

  Pre-pandemic.

• 1:48:26Bill Simmons?

  Eight years ago.

• 1:48:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:48:27Speaker 03

Jeez. Palm Springs I thought was good.

• 1:48:29Speaker 02

  It was.

• 1:48:30Speaker 03

  That was the last.

• 1:48:30Bill Simmons?

  Came out five years ago.

• 1:48:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, that was 2020.

• 1:48:32Speaker 03

That's the last good one that I remember.

• 1:48:33Bill Simmons?

That's also like a genre. Like that Sydney Sweeney, we like, we love Glenn Powell here in the rewatch balls, but that movie was bad.

• 1:48:40Speaker 03

One of the worst movies I've ever seen in my life.

• 1:48:41Speaker 02

  Extremely bad.

• 1:48:42Speaker 03

And not, and I say that as one who loves rom coms. So many plot points in that movie hinge on someone overhearing something, like multiple times.

• 1:48:50Bill Simmons?

  Right.

• 1:48:52Speaker 02

  Yeah, it's bad.

• 1:48:53Bill Simmons?

My daughter loved it and saw it like 10 times. Maybe that's your answer.

• 1:48:55Speaker 02

You know, that's the problem. The other one is they won't give Nancy, they won't give Nancy the money to make her movie.

• 1:49:01Speaker 03

  Give Nancy the money.

• 1:49:02Speaker 02

  Give Nancy the money.

• 1:49:03Speaker 03

All of these movies are good.

• 1:49:04Speaker 06

She was giving crazy budgets. 80 million for Something's Gotta Give in 03. That was more than the Matrix budget.

• 1:49:09Speaker 02

  Yeah, but then it made.

• 1:49:12Speaker 03

Which movie has stood the test of time?

• 1:49:14Speaker 02

We're gonna, listen, hydrangeas cost a lot, okay?

• 1:49:16Speaker 06

  They were doling it out.

• 1:49:17Speaker 02

Hydrangeas are expensive and that volume to have on set every day, that's what it costs.

• 1:49:21Bill Simmons?

It is insane to spend 180 million dollars on a Nancy Meyers movie.

• 1:49:25Speaker 03

I mean, that's more than like dialogue movies for the house. Is also better in Something's Gotta Give than he was in The Matrix. That's my hottest shit.

• 1:49:30Speaker 02

That is, that, there we go. Absolutely.

• 1:49:33Speaker 03

  He's so good in it.

• 1:49:34Speaker 02

  Incredible performer.

• 1:49:35Speaker 03

  It's the perfect younger man.

• 1:49:37Speaker 02

  It's, I can't believe he's this.

• 1:49:39Speaker 06

She wanted 180 for her, that's like twice Sinner's budget.

• 1:49:42Speaker 02

Well, but she was, it was Netflix. They were gonna have to pay everyone in advance or something.

• 1:49:47Bill Simmons?

I think she must have had an agent who was just like, I think I can get him to 180.

• 1:49:50Speaker 06

  Well, she got big stars.

• 1:49:51Speaker 02

  Scarlett Johansson.

• 1:49:52Speaker 03

A lot of it's an actor.

• 1:49:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:49:55Bill Simmons?

Thanks to Craig and Jack and Ronic. Amanda.

• 1:50:00Speaker 02

  Bill.

• 1:50:00Bill Simmons?

It's good to have you back in the fold.

• 1:50:01Speaker 02

It's really nice to be here.

• 1:50:03Bill Simmons?

Mina Kimes, first time in a while, first one in person. You'll do this again with us at some point.

• 1:50:08Speaker 03

An honor to talk about the goat. Oh, my God, you texted me, do you like It's Complicated, Nancy Meyers? And I was like, this is the moment I've been waiting my whole life for.

• 1:50:16Speaker 02

I know, it's really, really exciting when you get one of those texts.

• 1:50:20Bill Simmons?

Yeah, when I'm like feeling you out for the movie.

• 1:50:22Speaker 02

Yeah, but like the, the two I've gotten were Working Girl and then It's Complicated in a row. Like, I'm living my dream.

• 1:50:28Bill Simmons?

But I, I knew you loved Working Girl.

• 1:50:30Speaker 02

  I know, but I just.

• 1:50:31Bill Simmons?

  That's like your favorite movie.

• 1:50:32Speaker 02

It's really exciting to get to talk about the movies.

• 1:50:34Bill Simmons?

All right, good to see you both. Thank you.

• 1:50:45Speaker 08
