Geena Davis

Geena Davis (The Boroughs, Thelma & Louise, A League of Their Own) is an Academy Award-winning actor and advocate. Geena joins Armchair Expert to discuss growing up shy and tall in a strict New England household, reinventing herself as an exchange student in Sweden, and going from posing as a department-store mannequin to landing her first role in Tootsie. Geena and Dax talk about winning an Oscar at 32, how Susan Sarandon taught her to stop apologizing for existing on set, and discovering her athleticism while filming A League of Their Own. Geena explains how roles can transform who you are, why the precision of Olympic archery offered relief from the subjectivity of Hollywood, and why lasting cultural change begins with making unconscious bias impossible to ignore. Welcome, welcome, welcome to Armchair Expert. I'm Dax Shepard. I'm joined by Monica Padman.

• 0:04Speaker 01

  Hi.

• 0:04Dax Shepard?

Hello. Today we have an icon, Gina Davis. She is an Academy Award winning actor. Thelma and Louise, A League of Their Own, Beetlejuice, Long Kiss Goodnight, The Fly.

• 0:18Speaker 01

Legends. Sometimes we get legends in here. It's pretty cool.

• 0:20Dax Shepard?

Oh, I loved her. Please enjoy Gina Davis. We get support from Quince.

• 0:26Speaker 01

I have to say, I am so ready for fall. I want sweaters. I've been craving a true crisp morning where I actually need a jacket. I can't wait.

• 0:35Dax Shepard?

I'm fully there. The second it dips below 70, I'm like, this is my season. Give me the layers, give me the boots, give me a reason to wear something other than a t-shirt. And honestly, that's why I love Quince because fall is when your wardrobe actually has to show up and everything at Quince is 50 to 80% less than similar brands. We're talking 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters, starting at $60.

• 0:58Speaker 01

$60. $60 for cashmere that you'd expect from a luxury brand without the luxury price tag. It's amazing. Gets me every time. It really shouldn't be real, but it is because they go straight to the factories, they skip the middlemen and they just hand you the savings. The stuff isn't trendy. It's the kind of pieces you grab over and over because they work every time.

• 1:16Dax Shepard?

The 100% Mongolian cashmere sweaters for me are it. When I look at Steve McQueen, this man owned a couple of sweaters he wore all the time and he looks iconic.

• 1:25Speaker 01

  It's a uniform.

• 1:26Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:27Speaker 01

And Quince isn't just about the clothes. They have hotel quality bedding, cookware, bath essentials, thoughtfully designed furniture. You can really go there and outfit your entire apartment or house. So if you're in need of any kind of fall refresh at home too, same quality, same attention to detail for every corner of your life.

• 1:44Dax Shepard?

Find your next fall favorites at Quince. Download the Quince app for app exclusive offers or go to quince.com. Get free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. Now available in Canada and the UK too. And when Quince asks where you heard about them, let them know it was Armchair Expert. It's the best way to support the show. We get support from AG1. Fall is that time when your body and mind are getting ready for the winter. You're settling in, bracing for the cold. Your body's already running a deficit from the shorter days and broken sleep patterns. You don't want a nutrient deficit stacked on top of that too.

• 2:20Speaker 01

That's where your AG1 routine earns its spot. It's not fixing your sleep or your alarm time. It's giving your body what it needs so the dark mornings don't tank you before you even start. One scoop, cold water every morning before anything else.

• 2:33Dax Shepard?

AG1 Next Gen has 75 plus ingredients, vitamins, minerals, pre and probiotics, superfoods, backed by four separate gold standard clinical trials. Key nutrient levels improved with three months of consistent use.

• 2:47Speaker 01

That's the part people miss. It's not a one day fix. It's what happens when you stay consistent.

• 2:51Dax Shepard?

It's an easy, everyday thing. I've added it to my morning routine and I'm going to tell you, I actually love the taste of it. It's like Pavlovian. I drink it and I know, mm, I'm going to get that little vitamin buzz.

• 3:01Speaker 01

Well, that's also the thing. When you do it first thing in the morning, you already feel kind of self-esteem because you're like, I already did something good for myself.

• 3:08Dax Shepard?

Yes. Go to drinkag1.com/dax and for a limited time, get a free immunity bundle, including a bottle of omega three fish oil and a bottle of vitamin D3 K2 with your first subscription order of AG1 Next Gen or AG1 Pro. That's drinkag1.com/dax. And after checkout, be sure to let them know that Armchair Experts sent you.

• 3:50Speaker 02

  Was looking for the seatbelt.

• 3:52Dax Shepard?

Oh, you were. Interesting, you were, because you think this is going to be a wild ride?

• 3:59Speaker 02

I've been flying a lot lately.

• 4:02Speaker 01

  It's just muscle memory.

• 4:03Dax Shepard?

That's really sweet. You really did just go for your seatbelt.

• 4:06Speaker 02

Yeah, I just was, who knows what's going to happen. I'm just renting. Just live in Palisades, moved before all of that. Unfortunately, that house went. And then I rented a place in Venice for two years. Then I gave up the lease on that because I had to go to New Mexico.

• 4:23Dax Shepard?

  New Mexico.

• 4:25Speaker 02

To shoot a series. And then, just as I was going to come back, I thought, that would be so easy to find. The fires happened right when I was coming back.

• 4:33Dax Shepard?

And so everyone was renting up everything.

• 4:35Speaker 02

So everything was gone. I ended up in a. Guest house in the backyard of some nice Armenian people in Glendale.

• 4:44Dax Shepard?

Wait, hold on. You were in someone's guest house?

• 4:47Speaker 02

  Guest house.

• 4:48Dax Shepard?

And were they aware that Gina Davis was their tenant?

• 4:51Speaker 02

Well, it was funny. My assistant booked it in her name and then I came to meet them and she said, it's actually her. And I said, by the way, maybe don't talk about that. I'm living here.

• 5:01Dax Shepard?

  Don't tell the neighbors.

• 5:01Speaker 02

Yeah, yeah. Just don't bring it up. And they said, why? What do you mean?

• 5:06Speaker 01

  They're like, bring what up?

• 5:07Speaker 02

  Bring what up?

• 5:10Dax Shepard?

Are they, are they first gen? Are they new to the country?

• 5:13Speaker 02

  They had accents.

• 5:14Dax Shepard?

So they might've moved here. Okay. They weren't totally dialed into American pop culture.

• 5:19Speaker 02

But here's the best part. So I asked not to talk about me and they said, oh, oh, oh, you know, who also lives in this neighborhood? The guy who's the fifth billing on Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

• 5:31Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 5:32Speaker 02

Lives and then that one lives over here. And I'm like, so I was just talking about, okay.

• 5:37Dax Shepard?

I'm doing exactly what you just did. I pray maybe you don't do.

• 5:40Speaker 01

Yeah. Like, so that, that's what I don't want you to do.

• 5:44Dax Shepard?

There's kind of a sweet naivety to it though. Like perhaps in his mind, he was like, good news. There's more of you on this block. You could get together and have coffee and talk about whatever you guys talk about.

• 5:55Speaker 02

Probably want to get together. Yeah.

• 5:57Dax Shepard?

  Talk about art and stuff.

• 5:58Speaker 01

It's a very classy block. There's a lot of celebrities.

• 6:03Dax Shepard?

  How long were you there?

• 6:04Speaker 02

  About eight months.

• 6:05Dax Shepard?

Eight months. Okay. So certainly I know you do Massachusetts, New York, Sweden. Where did you spend the bulk of your time? What cities? Were you in LA a lot?

• 6:16Speaker 02

I moved here in 83 and I've been here ever since.

• 6:20Dax Shepard?

Oh, you weren't in New York for any of that?

• 6:23Speaker 02

No. Right after college, I went to New York because my whole class was going to New York. I studied acting.

• 6:30Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 6:30Speaker 02

And they all wanted to do plays. I knew I wanted to do movies and TV, but nobody told me, well, you know, you should actually go to LA instead. So I went to New York and I'm like, how am I supposed to get in a movie?

• 6:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. They don't make a ton there.

• 6:43Speaker 02

  And then I did.

• 6:45Dax Shepard?

Your town in Massachusetts that you You grew up in is 300 and I did the math yesterday. It's like 312 years old.

• 6:55Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 6:55Dax Shepard?

That's impossible to be in America in a town that's 300 plus years old.

• 6:59Speaker 02

Right. And I was in, they had a parade for the Seska Centennial, which was 250th anniversary, which the country is having back in the eighties. I was the parade marshal. My parents and I dressed in costumes from the era. My dad grew out mutton chops.

• 7:17Dax Shepard?

  Kilogramy stuff.

• 7:18Speaker 02

  Kilogramy stuff.

• 7:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah. How close were you to Plymouth Rock?

• 7:23Speaker 02

  20 minutes.

• 7:23Dax Shepard?

  20 minutes.

• 7:24Speaker 01

  Wow, that's so cool.

• 7:25Dax Shepard?

  Okay, it's also Wareham?

• 7:27Speaker 02

  Wareham.

• 7:28Dax Shepard?

Wareham. It's also the gateway to Cape Cod, right?

• 7:31Speaker 02

  It is.

• 7:32Dax Shepard?

I just asked someone this the other day who grew up in a tourist town. But when I think of, certainly it would swell in the summer, right? The amount of people that were in your town? Or did they just pass through?

• 7:43Speaker 02

They passed through because it wasn't on the Cape. It's right before the Cape, but you must pass through it to get to the Cape.

• 7:50Dax Shepard?

Then this wouldn't apply. I'm like, every time I was somewhere for duration, like go to Northern Michigan in the summer, I would fall in love with the girl there. And then I'd have to return home and then I just imagined, did that girl fall in love every year with someone that was out of town? Like, that seems ripe for a lot of

• 8:06Speaker 01

  Local love affairs.

• 8:07Dax Shepard?

  Long distance relationships.

• 8:08Speaker 01

  Oh, sure.

• 8:09Speaker 02

Well, I never had a boyfriend till I left town.

• 8:12Dax Shepard?

You didn't have one all through high school?

• 8:13Speaker 02

  No.

• 8:14Dax Shepard?

That would shock people, but I've read enough about you that I know why it's not shocking. 348 years, that's what it was. 1678, that was settled in.

• 8:24Speaker 02

  Isn't that crazy?

• 8:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah, 348, it's nuts. So your mother was a teacher's assistant?

• 8:30Speaker 02

  Sometimes.

• 8:31Dax Shepard?

Did she have a college education?

• 8:33Speaker 02

  No.

• 8:33Dax Shepard?

She was born in 1919, I think?

• 8:35Speaker 02

  Yes, that's right. Wow.

• 8:36Dax Shepard?

Incredible, really. Now, my kids make fun of us. They say, you guys are from the 1900s. And I'm like, oh, wow, that is true. And that sounds really funny. I'm sure to them in particular.

• 8:46Speaker 02

  It does sound funny.

• 8:47Dax Shepard?

Back in the 1900s. But what kind of mom was mom?

• 8:50Speaker 02

Fabulous mom. She grew all of our produce, you know? She had an acre size yard. She grew so much that she would sometimes sell to the local little store, strawberries and stuff to them.

• 9:03Dax Shepard?

  That she canned.

• 9:04Speaker 02

Canned. Oh, my God. Yeah. Both my parents grew up rather poor in Vermont. And so every piece of foil got saved. I'm not sure they bought a second roll, actually.

• 9:15Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 9:16Speaker 02

Just used what we had. They were very, very careful about everything.

• 9:20Dax Shepard?

They would have been little kids in the Great Depression, right?

• 9:23Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 9:23Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that'll sear into your consciousness.

• 9:26Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 9:26Dax Shepard?

And Dad was a civil engineer?

• 9:28Speaker 02

With the Corps of Engineers, yeah.

• 9:29Dax Shepard?

  Like the Army Corps?

• 9:30Speaker 02

Yes, yes. His unit was in charge of maintaining the canal, surveying it and maintaining it. And then he got assigned to go all up and down the coast, the East Coast, to survey waterways and things.

• 9:42Dax Shepard?

And you were what kind of kid? You were shy?

• 9:45Speaker 02

I was very shy. And it seemed like every time I wasn't and burst out of my shell, somebody would say, oh, no, no, no, no, no, go back in your shell. That's too much.

• 9:56Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you had a little gap in your paper route, right? And then this little gap on your bike where there were no one watching you, just let it rip and sing at the top of your lungs, but you'd get busted?

• 10:04Speaker 02

There was my house and a few other houses, and there was a long hill where there weren't houses. And there was a creek that went there. And first of all, I was very superstitious at the time. So I had to find sticks on the ground in the shape of a Y, which meant, yes, you can keep going.

• 10:21Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 10:22Speaker 02

And if I found one in the shape of a V, that meant very good to keep going.

• 10:27Dax Shepard?

Oh, you made it very good.

• 10:28Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 10:29Speaker 01

Well, what if you didn't find any sticks? You just stood there?

• 10:32Speaker 02

Well, I'd look around, you know?

• 10:34Dax Shepard?

You find what you're looking for, don't you?

• 10:35Speaker 01

  It's true. Manifest.

• 10:36Speaker 02

The people up the hill, you know, most of them were older and they wanted their paper. And they'd come out and say, where is she? And they'd look down the hill. And then they'd call my mother and say, I think something's wrong with your daughter.

• 10:49Dax Shepard?

  She's at it again.

• 10:50Speaker 02

She's wandering around and not bringing the paper.

• 10:53Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 10:53Dax Shepard?

  She's staring at the ground.

• 10:54Speaker 01

We might call that a little OCD tendency now.

• 10:57Speaker 02

Yes, and I'm so not superstitious now.

• 11:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:00Speaker 02

Whatsoever. But I think I was worried about things.

• 11:04Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 11:04Speaker 02

And that was a way to feel better.

• 11:06Dax Shepard?

And you were very self-conscious about being tall?

• 11:08Speaker 02

Mm-hmm. I was the tallest kid in class.

• 11:11Dax Shepard?

  Period.

• 11:12Speaker 02

  Throughout, yeah, from minute one.

• 11:14Dax Shepard?

Okay, so let's get into the compulsive behavior, because I had a ton of it. I had a bunch of ticks. I had so many ticks. And then I did so many things to prevent bad luck, right? Like, I had to do every single thing twice. I had all these bizarre rituals. I had to take the toilet paper and leave the bathroom and touch the wall, then come back in. But I had to do that twice. I was afraid someone would see.

• 11:34Speaker 02

Wait, what about toilet paper? Did you say?

• 11:35Dax Shepard?

For whatever reason, at some point at eight years old, while going to the bathroom, I was like, if I don't take the toilet paper and string it out all the way to the hallway and touch the wall, then come back in. But I have to do that twice, or it's bad luck. Then go again, pray nobody in my house sees me, because I know it's madness.

• 11:51Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 11:52Dax Shepard?

And I just had a million things I was so busy with. Did you have any of that kind of stuff?

• 11:58Speaker 02

Well, what I was very busy with was monsters in the house. And then I'll talk about the outside monsters. But there weren't just monsters in the closet or under the bed, which of course I had. Those are standard.

• 12:10Dax Shepard?

  To be expected.

• 12:11Speaker 02

Right. The worst one was it could read your mind. And so when I was in bed, I had to think that I was somewhere else so that it would go there to look for me.

• 12:23Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 12:24Speaker 02

And get me. So I'd be thinking, here I am in the kitchen. Here I'm in the kitchen. And I'm having crackers. It would get exhausting. And I say, I hope it doesn't realize I'm actually in bed.

• 12:34Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 12:34Speaker 02

And I'd get up and spring out of bed. And then I'd say, yes, I am in the bed. I'm in the bed. I'm in the bed.

• 12:39Dax Shepard?

Okay, so you were trying to teleport your consciousness to deceive.

• 12:44Speaker 01

  The monster.

• 12:44Dax Shepard?

And what's great is the monster is so skilled it can read your mind, but it can also be tricked very easily.

• 12:49Speaker 02

  Right.

• 12:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's the logic of a young.

• 12:51Speaker 02

  And it can't see clearly.

• 12:53Dax Shepard?

Clearly, or it would just observe you.

• 12:55Speaker 02

Right. I didn't ever really think about that.

• 12:57Dax Shepard?

Oh, none of these things make sense if you try to unravel why. Like, the whole evenness thing, did you have that at all?

• 13:03Speaker 02

  Evenness?

• 13:04Dax Shepard?

Like, you scuff your left heel walking to school. And then you just become neurotically obsessed with like, well, I have to make it a scuff on this side, or it's imbalanced.

• 13:12Speaker 02

I didn't have that kind of thing.

• 13:13Dax Shepard?

You didn't have any of the balancing.

• 13:14Speaker 02

Or I have to touch things. I didn't have that.

• 13:16Dax Shepard?

  No touching.

• 13:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 13:17Speaker 01

Did you have a visual of the monster? Like, did you know what it looked like?

• 13:21Speaker 02

That one was invisible. And the other ones were corporal real. But I didn't think too much about how they actually looked, but that they had grabby hands. But there was one.

• 13:32Dax Shepard?

They're very grabby. They're handsy. They want to pinch you and grab your ankles.

• 13:35Speaker 02

I had to vault into the bed from very far away.

• 13:37Dax Shepard?

  Of course.

• 13:39Speaker 02

But there was one outside that was an enormous colossus, giant. And if you could see the horizon, it was just below that. And if I did something wrong, it would take one step toward me. And so I would look at the horizon, waiting to see the top of its head.

• 13:59Dax Shepard?

Is your current explanation of all this, mine is easy. I had a stepdad that arrived in my life. He was an addict and he was violent. And then all these things took off, right? All these OCD type things. When someone is like, oh yeah, when your environment's very uncontrolled, you try to control things. Great, that makes sense.

• 14:17Speaker 02

  Right.

• 14:18Dax Shepard?

Do you have an explanation? Is yours genetic? Or was there something nurture going on that you had a hunch?

• 14:23Speaker 02

I think there was kind of something about that you have to be perfect.

• 14:28Dax Shepard?

Dad was a deacon as well as a civil engineer?

• 14:31Speaker 02

Yeah, I mean, they were very involved with the church. He and I also sang in the church choir.

• 14:35Dax Shepard?

  You played the organ?

• 14:36Speaker 02

  For the young people's service.

• 14:39Dax Shepard?

So there was this huge fear that you would be not good.

• 14:42Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 14:43Dax Shepard?

I hate that. Don't you fucking hate that? Like, I got in a debate with my mother-in-law. I'm like, look, I get it. You want to introduce the kids to your religion. That is your right. I wish you well. I do ask you to not introduce this concept of hell and sin to these little brains. I don't think that's a healthy concept.

• 15:02Speaker 02

No, exactly. But it was even more than religion. It was sort of a, maybe a New England-y kind of thing, where you had to help, help, help everybody ever could, but take nothing. It was to the extreme where if somebody was handing me something, would you like to have some ice cream or a glass of water? No, thank you. No, thank you.

• 15:24Dax Shepard?

You said you'd be at a girlfriend's house and you'd like smell the chicken and garlic cooking. And you wanted it. And she invited you to eat and you said no.

• 15:30Speaker 02

I said no. And then thankfully, her mom knew about my mom. She called and said, Lucille, Gina's having dinner with us. No, she is.

• 15:40Speaker 02

Oh, no, no, no, you can't say yes because it's too much trouble.

• 15:43Dax Shepard?

We don't want to be a burden.

• 15:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 15:45Speaker 01

  Politeness.

• 15:46Dax Shepard?

Where do you think that came from in them?

• 15:48Speaker 02

I don't know, but they definitely both had this thing where you had to be the politest person. Not only polite, but just incredibly self-sacrificing. Perfect way to be with absolutely no needs, but I'm going to give you everything.

• 16:02Dax Shepard?

  Self-sufficient and very generous.

• 16:04Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 16:04Speaker 01

  Oof, yeah. That's tough.

• 16:06Dax Shepard?

Yeah, how did that play out with like friendships? Did people think you were over the top with that? Or was it standard enough ethos in that area?

• 16:16Speaker 02

You know, my only close friend was Lucien, who lived across the street and who I saw and played with every day. But for some reason, the other kids, I was friendly with everybody in school, but I didn't get invited to people's houses, which was weird. There was one time when I was already driving, I already had my license, and the cool boy from class called and said, "Hey, a few people are gathering at my house. Would you like to come?" And I, "Oh, uh, hold on." I was like, "It's finally happening. It's finally happening." I'm a junior in high school, but...

• 16:51Dax Shepard?

  Hold on.

• 16:52Speaker 02

And I went and followed my dad. I said, "Dad, dad, dad, can I take the car?" "Why?" "Well, I'm invited to go over to a friend's house." And he said, "But it's 9 o'clock." I said, "That's okay." And he said, "Nobody goes out at 9 o'clock. No, it's too late."

• 17:06Speaker 01

  No.

• 17:06Speaker 02

Dad, but what if I left at 7? I'd still stay there till 11, so what difference... And he was like, "No, no." And I had to go back and say,

• 17:14Speaker 01

  No!

• 17:15Speaker 02

"I'm sorry, I can't come." And then never got to ask.

• 17:18Dax Shepard?

  No!

• 17:20Speaker 02

  That was my one chance.

• 17:22Speaker 01

  That's awful.

• 17:24Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:24Speaker 01

So, did you resent them, your parents?

• 17:28Speaker 02

I probably didn't really grasp it as well as I do now, what was going on. I mean, I resented the hell out of not being able to...

• 17:35Speaker 01

  Of course. Live your life.

• 17:37Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 17:38Dax Shepard?

I know you went and studied in Sweden for a year in high school. Is it because you knew everyone was so tall there? Do you think that was in the mix?

• 17:46Speaker 02

No, but that was interesting. I didn't know that. I found it out.

• 17:50Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you got there and you were completely normal, right?

• 17:51Speaker 02

I was completely normal. My high school started this foreign exchange program when I was a junior. And the second I heard about it, I wanna go. And I think it was that I somehow knew I could reinvent myself. They wouldn't know I was a geeky kid who didn't have a boyfriend. And that's how it turned out. They kept saying, you must have been so popular.

• 18:11Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 18:14Dax Shepard?

Had you taken any Swedish prior to?

• 18:16Speaker 02

No, I don't know what the plan was or how this ever happened. But I got to Sweden without knowing how to speak one word of it. And I started high school two days later.

• 18:28Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 18:29Dax Shepard?

  Really?

• 18:30Speaker 02

I show up at the school and they say, so I was gonna help you do your classes today. And I'm in the first class and I'm like, hang on, it's in Swedish.

• 18:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 18:42Speaker 02

How is this supposed to work?

• 18:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 18:44Dax Shepard?

How are you gonna learn anything?

• 18:46Speaker 02

I went up to the teacher afterwards, and of course, they all do know how to speak English. I said, do you know what I'm supposed to do?

• 18:54Speaker 02

And she said, I don't know, I've been thinking about it because

• 18:59Speaker 02

I can't teach the class in English. So I started, I'd ask somebody, what was the homework? And I'd take the book home and I'd look up every single word

• 19:08Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 19:08Speaker 02

in the dictionary. So I would translate the entire homework, but I learned it fast.

• 19:13Dax Shepard?

That's how the Scientologists were. They call that like clearing words.

• 19:17Speaker 02

  Really?

• 19:17Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you have to read everything with a dictionary next to you. And they believe that the basis of all misunderstanding is that people misunderstand a word and then continue on and they build all this stuff on top of a misunderstanding. So you're obligated.

• 19:29Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 19:29Dax Shepard?

I've worked with lots of Scientologists and I've watched someone doing the clearing words thing. And I was like, what's going on here?

• 19:34Speaker 02

  Wow.

• 19:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so you could have invented your own religion and you just missed the opportunity. What was the family like that you were living with?

• 19:41Speaker 02

They were conservative, I would say. They were pretty strict.

• 19:46Dax Shepard?

This is a bummer, you left one constricting environment for another. You needed to go to the Skarsgård family.

• 19:52Speaker 01

  Oh, exactly.

• 19:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, right?

• 19:53Speaker 01

Yes, they're like naked walking around.

• 19:56Dax Shepard?

Yeah, Alexander said they were always naked and having wine.

• 19:57Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah, yeah.

• 19:58Dax Shepard?

  Dancing.

• 19:59Speaker 02

Well, the older girl, their daughter, had a boyfriend who slept over.

• 20:03Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, that was standard, right?

• 20:04Speaker 02

Absolutely. And I was like, wow. I'm sure they felt very responsible.

• 20:08Dax Shepard?

But alas, you did fall in love there.

• 20:10Speaker 02

  I did.

• 20:11Dax Shepard?

  What was his name? Mats?

• 20:12Speaker 02

  Mats, yes.

• 20:13Dax Shepard?

  Mats.

• 20:14Speaker 02

We went on a school trip to Amsterdam.

• 20:17Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 20:17Speaker 02

And I hadn't even really noticed him before in my class, but we started hanging out and he was gorgeous and blonde.

• 20:25Dax Shepard?

  How tall was he?

• 20:25Speaker 02

Taller than me. So that was like unbelievable. And his family adopted me. They were like, just come here.

• 20:31Dax Shepard?

  And they weren't strict?

• 20:32Speaker 02

No. And they drank wine at dinner and I was like, oh my God.

• 20:36Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 20:36Speaker 02

This is crazy. And then the dad had to go on a business trip one time. They said, would you like to come with us? Oh my God, yes. And the people said yes. And they got a room for Mats and I.

• 20:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 20:48Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 20:49Dax Shepard?

  What a blessing.

• 20:51Speaker 01

  And you were like 18?

• 20:52Speaker 02

What world have I lived in?

• 20:53Dax Shepard?

  Seventeen probably, right?

• 20:54Speaker 02

  Oh my God.

• 20:55Dax Shepard?

You maintained a pen pal relationship?

• 20:57Speaker 02

Yes. And my parents actually invited him to come visit us in the summer after I came home and he came for like a week.

• 21:04Dax Shepard?

Had the magic fizzled out between?

• 21:06Speaker 02

  No, no, no.

• 21:07Dax Shepard?

  So summer was nice?

• 21:08Speaker 02

  Yeah, it was.

• 21:09Dax Shepard?

Did you take him to Martha's Vineyard?

• 21:11Speaker 02

No, but we took him camping in Vermont in our homemade camper.

• 21:16Dax Shepard?

How did that end? They're hard. Long distance back then was like a dollar a minute, right?

• 21:20Speaker 02

  It's really hard.

• 21:21Dax Shepard?

So when you first got out of high school, you wanted to go to University of Boston. That didn't work out for one reason or another?

• 21:28Speaker 02

I wasn't home in order to audition. You had to audition to get in the acting program. So I went to a college, New England college, which you didn't have to audition to become an acting major for the first year. And then as soon as I could, I auditioned to go to B U.

• 21:43Dax Shepard?

And did you like it there?

• 21:44Speaker 02

  I did.

• 21:44Dax Shepard?

You got an F in body movement?

• 21:46Speaker 02

In movement class, which is sort of dance, but yes, because there were these assignments, like you and your partner, create a scene with three hits and a fall or something like that.

• 21:59Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 21:59Speaker 02

And all the stuff that I came up with was so ridiculous that she would say, very amusing, but again, not the assignment.

• 22:08Dax Shepard?

Did you start gaining confidence in college? When does the transition from like, I'm an awkward duck till? I know by the time we get to New York, we're Ready to try modeling. So something has happened between those two.

• 22:19Speaker 02

  Right.

• 22:20Dax Shepard?

  It was college.

• 22:21Speaker 02

Yeah, it was because now, oh, I'm in charge of myself, be however I want to be. I actually became sort of goth, a lot of eyeliner and I pierced my own ears.

• 22:33Speaker 01

You were rebelling. It was your time to rebel.

• 22:35Speaker 02

  That's my time to rebel.

• 22:36Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 22:37Dax Shepard?

Okay. So when you get to New York, you start modeling and did that require like your first time doing it? That's a big leap of confidence. You've kind of got to just, I think, fake it till you make it, maybe. I mean, does anyone feel like a sexy runway model?

• 22:54Speaker 02

  I don't know.

• 22:55Dax Shepard?

Meaning like five or six of them, and those are our supermodels, but it's an awkward endeavor initially, no?

• 23:01Speaker 02

It very much felt like I was faking everything. In fact, I guess because I was taller than most models, I would get a lot of bathing suit and underwear and panty, those kinds of jobs. And I was actually in Victoria's Secret one time. So I'm shooting all these photos in underwear, you know, very revealing. And then I go back to the dressing room to go home and put on my full.

• 23:23Dax Shepard?

  Big grandma.

• 23:24Speaker 02

  Big grandma underpants.

• 23:27Speaker 02

And I told myself, I just have figured out how to stand. That was all a trick, tricking them into thinking I'm attractive.

• 23:35Dax Shepard?

I don't want to be too dramatic, but do you think you were able to disassociate?

• 23:38Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:39Dax Shepard?

Like, okay, we're gonna walk out, we're gonna act like we're a sex symbol.

• 23:43Speaker 02

  Right, yeah.

• 23:44Dax Shepard?

We know we're not, so we're just gonna vacation while that's happening.

• 23:47Speaker 02

Exactly. I'm just gonna pretend I'm all that.

• 23:50Dax Shepard?

One story before we get to Tootsie. You were also working at Ann Taylor?

• 23:54Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 23:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, go ahead, mom.

• 23:57Speaker 01

  No, just great store.

• 23:58Dax Shepard?

Historic. So imagine she's there in the seventies. I mean, I have to imagine this is apex window display era of department stores. Yeah?

• 24:07Speaker 02

  Right.

• 24:08Dax Shepard?

So you were working there and what happened?

• 24:09Speaker 02

I was a salesgirl at Aunt Taylor. We would dress like Aunt Taylor's style. So I was always made up and dressed up.

• 24:17Dax Shepard?

Except for the undergarments, which were enormous underneath.

• 24:19Speaker 02

Except for my giant panties. And one time, the window display was a cafe table and two models were sitting at chairs.

• 24:28Dax Shepard?

  Mannequin models.

• 24:29Speaker 02

Mannequins. And there was fake fruit and all that, but there was one empty chair. And I kept looking in the window. Then I said to one of my coworkers, dare me to go in the window? And she was like, yeah, do it. I had no idea what I was gonna do, but I went and got in the chair. And people were walking by at that time and they were like, hmm, wonder what she's doing? And I got in the chair and I just.

• 24:52Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 24:53Speaker 02

  And froze.

• 24:53Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 24:56Speaker 02

And then they keep watching to find out what's gonna happen. And then other people stopped and said, what are you looking at?

• 25:02Dax Shepard?

But they had missed you arriving.

• 25:04Speaker 02

Yeah, and they said, just wait, because they're like, she's gotta move at some point. So I started moving, you know, like a robot occasionally. And they'd go, whoa. And then more people come and say, what are you all looking at? Just wait.

• 25:17Speaker 01

Oh, my God, you created like a whole scene.

• 25:19Speaker 02

I created a whole thing. At some point, the manager of the store came over and said, Gina, what are you doing? Get out of the window. And then she looked and saw this giant crowd outside and said, well, stay there.

• 25:31Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 25:32Speaker 02

They started hiring me every Saturday.

• 25:35Speaker 01

  No.

• 25:36Speaker 02

For like five hours or so.

• 25:37Dax Shepard?

Five hour shifts of sitting still.

• 25:40Speaker 02

A little break every hour. I'd take like a five minute break.

• 25:43Speaker 01

Wow, it's like an art installation.

• 25:45Dax Shepard?

But I think even sitting dead still for 15 minutes would be far more grueling than people would expect. Is it not hard?

• 25:53Speaker 02

I learned, I had no idea that I had this talent, but I learned that I have a tremendous skill at being motionless and that I could go a very long time without blinking, because they're all also waiting for me to blink.

• 26:07Dax Shepard?

  Oh, they're on it, yeah.

• 26:08Speaker 02

You know, I could go like. At least five minutes or more.

• 26:11Speaker 01

  What?

• 26:11Speaker 02

Without blinking. Then I blink and they go, ah.

• 26:14Dax Shepard?

Did you ever consider rubbing a thin layer of Vaseline over your eyes?

• 26:18Speaker 02

  Without a help?

• 26:18Dax Shepard?

So that they wouldn't need moisturizing. Like, maybe you could convince your eyes that they could stay open permanently. Well, that's why you're blinking, to moisturize your eyes.

• 26:26Speaker 01

I know, but no one wants to put Vaseline on.

• 26:27Dax Shepard?

Of course not, but if you're committed to your craft.

• 26:30Speaker 02

You can't be sure that would work.

• 26:31Dax Shepard?

No, you'd have to try it.

• 26:32Speaker 01

  Then your eyes are covered.

• 26:33Dax Shepard?

You'd probably fall down getting in, because it'd be blurry.

• 26:35Speaker 02

I should have tried. But you know what? People would be looking, looking at me and one time somebody said, ah, it's not a mannequin. It has hair on its arms. And so I was like, okay. And I went home.

• 26:46Dax Shepard?

She could hear them perfectly through the glass. Isn't that fascinating?

• 26:48Speaker 02

  Perfectly.

• 26:48Dax Shepard?

I would love to hear people talking about me. I don't think I can hear.

• 26:51Speaker 01

  I'd be scared, but yeah.

• 26:52Speaker 02

So from then on, I shaved my arms and I got a wig that looked like the other mannequin's wig.

• 26:58Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 26:59Dax Shepard?

This is the reverse of the movie Mannequin, where a mannequin becomes a real-life beautiful girl. You're a real-life beautiful girl who became a mannequin.

• 27:06Speaker 02

Who became a mannequin. And then one time somebody said, that's not a robot or anything. She's not plugged in. So the next time, I had a very subtle little chord disappearing.

• 27:17Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 27:18Speaker 02

  She's plugged in.

• 27:22Dax Shepard?

This feels impossible, but your first audition as Tootsie?

• 27:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 27:26Speaker 01

  Oh, my.

• 27:27Dax Shepard?

I mean, that really is nuts. How did you get it?

• 27:30Speaker 02

Because the role required his dressing room mate to be in her underwear a couple of times. So he'd be like, what? They called model agencies and said, do you have any models who know how to act? And my agent knew that I didn't say, we do have one.

• 27:46Dax Shepard?

She's currently acting like a mannequin on Fifth Street.

• 27:50Speaker 02

And so they said, okay, so go, these are the lines, and you're gonna go to an audition. And if they like your audition, they want to see you in a bathing suit. So just wear a bathing suit under your clothes. So I did, and I went to the audition and I read, and it was just assistant to the casting directors.

• 28:06Dax Shepard?

The first rung on the ladder.

• 28:08Speaker 02

She did the video and then didn't ask to see my bathing suit. So it just went completely out of my mind. Of course, my first time, nothing's gonna happen.

• 28:15Dax Shepard?

You flew to do a runway show, right?

• 28:17Speaker 02

Yes, I went to Paris. I went to Paris and I got booked for some of the runway shows and I was excited about that. And then got a message, call your agent. And they said, you got the part. And I'm like, what part? Tootsie. Huh?

• 28:30Speaker 01

  [laughing]

• 28:31Speaker 02

What? They said, but you could stay and do the shows. And I was like, I'm coming home. I gotta come home. And it was like, didn't need to, but I really wish, I regret.

• 28:39Dax Shepard?

Sidney Ballock had seen your tape, right?

• 28:42Speaker 02

He saw my tape and he said, I really like her. Where's her underwear photo? And they said, oh, we forgot, we didn't do it. Well, get her back. Oh, turns out we can't, she's in Paris. Well, do they have any photos of her in a bathing suit?

• 28:56Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 28:57Dax Shepard?

  Secrets.

• 28:58Speaker 01

  Lucky.

• 28:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, we have some photos.

• 29:01Speaker 02

I definitely did, yes. With everybody else in this office.

• 29:06Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 29:06Speaker 02

  I'm horrible lighting.

• 29:07Dax Shepard?

What was your intimidation level? Cause your scenes were immediately with Dustin.

• 29:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 29:12Dax Shepard?

And Dustin's already being heralded as like the second coming of Brando, right? I mean, he is like God at that time.

• 29:18Speaker 02

  Right.

• 29:18Dax Shepard?

So, yeah, what was your kind of anxiety level? As someone who trends high with anxiety.

• 29:24Speaker 02

I get there on the first day. The first scene I shoot is in my underwear with Dustin. But I was just like, this is what was supposed to happen.

• 29:32Speaker 01

  Yeah, you felt confident?

• 29:33Speaker 02

As if it really happens that way for people. But I felt kind of fine.

• 29:37Dax Shepard?

You think the modeling helped? Like you kind of already crossed a really big bridge to do that. That's way more awkward than acting.

• 29:43Speaker 02

  Right.

• 29:43Dax Shepard?

When I gotta do a photo shoot for something, I'm like, oh gosh, I can't stand this. It's crazy how you act.

• 29:48Speaker 02

No, that's true. And so we started shooting the scene and Dustin and Sidney were so gracious and kind with me. And then on one of the takes Dustin accidentally ran into the door. And I went over and said, are you okay? You all right? So I'm living ad libbing.

• 30:05Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 30:06Speaker 02

Sidney Ballock said, hey, come here for a second. Why are you not nervous? And I said, am I supposed to be?

• 30:12Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 30:13Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 30:13Speaker 02

He was like, yeah, no, it's good. It's great.

• 30:16Dax Shepard?

  But it's almost creepy.

• 30:18Speaker 02

But it's a little bit creepy. He said, I mean, you're acting a scene when Dustin's not when you're in your underwear. And you seem just fine with it.

• 30:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Is it fair to say, now, look, I've worked with really, really acclaimed actors that didn't have this ability. And then I've worked with really acclaimed actors where they have this ability, which is like, they're so good, they can just suck you into their bubble. Like, do you think Dustin's ability helped you for that first role?

• 30:44Speaker 02

Yeah, Dustin was incredible with me and immediately decided that I was gonna have a career and just took me under his wing all day long, tips and advice. And the second day, he said, come with me at lunch, I'm gonna take you to Daily's. I didn't know what that was.

• 31:02Dax Shepard?

And for the listener, Daily's are when they used to shoot on film, they go process all the film, then you'd come back and watch it all in the theater, unedited.

• 31:08Speaker 02

Right. And it's typically just for department heads and whatever to see was the mic and the camera or something.

• 31:14Dax Shepard?

Is the hair reading weird in the lighting?

• 31:16Speaker 02

And Cindy was a little surprised when Dustin brought me in. He said, what's going on? He said, I'm gonna teach her how to watch Daily's.

• 31:24Dax Shepard?

Yeah, cuz let's just add, actors are not invited to Daily's.

• 31:26Speaker 02

  No, no.

• 31:26Dax Shepard?

If you're Dustin Hoffman, you can go.

• 31:28Speaker 02

Yes. And Cindy was like, okay. So every time I did scenes, I got to go to Daily's and he would talk through it and stuff. And he wanted me to learn how to use Daily's as a tool. And so the idea was, let's say you think something you did, you had some intention and you hope it came across. Well, go see the Daily's to see if it did.

• 31:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 31:49Speaker 02

And if it didn't, you probably have some other scene where you could work on that aspect of the character. So that was incredible.

• 31:56Speaker 01

  That's great.

• 31:57Dax Shepard?

Also, you're like accumulating, I don't wanna belittle it and say that you accumulate tricks, but you do accumulate the things you're good at. And no one's great at everything. And some things are totally unexpected. Some you've been doing since you're eight, and of course, it works. But also, some of the things you were doing since you're eight on film don't work. There's a lot to learn.

• 32:15Speaker 02

  There is.

• 32:16Dax Shepard?

I was lucky. The first movie I ever did, they invited us to Daily's.

• 32:19Speaker 02

  Really?

• 32:19Dax Shepard?

  It was a mixed bag.

• 32:21Speaker 02

  Oh, were you self-conscious?

• 32:22Dax Shepard?

Well, first of all, I couldn't believe I was on a screen.

• 32:25Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 32:26Dax Shepard?

I was just like, oh my God, because they're showing the dailies on a movie screen in New Zealand.

• 32:30Speaker 02

  Yes, yes.

• 32:31Dax Shepard?

I'm like, this is happening. So maybe the first half of the times I went, I just couldn't believe I was in a movie. And then the last half, I was like, we gotta stop doing that, that, and that, you know?

• 32:40Speaker 02

  Right, right, right.

• 32:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah, like, once the thrill of being in a movie wears off.

• 32:44Speaker 02

  Right.

• 32:45Dax Shepard?

And you're like, oh, I could be doing a little better at this.

• 32:47Speaker 02

Yeah, or I could be not doing that.

• 32:49Dax Shepard?

Yeah, maybe I don't need to do so much, period.

• 32:52Speaker 02

  Right.

• 32:52Dax Shepard?

I think that's what you really learn a lot of times, like, you don't need to be that busy.

Dax, is there anything better than crawling into a perfect bed on a cold fall night? Candlelit, hoodie on, maybe even some rain outside. The dream.

  Increasingly so.

• 36:54Dax Shepard?

So that movie comes out, it's enormous. I think it gets nominated for 10 Academy Awards, something outrageous like that.

• 37:01Speaker 02

  Big hit, yeah.

• 37:03Dax Shepard?

And how are you computing, having gone from being a living model?

• 37:08Speaker 01

  A mannequin.

• 37:08Dax Shepard?

A living mannequin to that moment?

• 37:11Speaker 02

So I'm home, visiting my folks at one point, and my best friend's mom comes over. She's talking to my mom and she says, "No one can believe somebody from Wareham is in a movie. Nobody can believe this." My mom says, "Well, she studied acting in college."

• 37:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, with 13 other thousand kids that year.

• 37:33Speaker 02

But I remember just now, my brother and I took them to see the movie. It was a matinee, hardly anyone was there. The movie finishes, we get in the car, dead silence. Mom says, "So, what do we have for dinner tonight?"

• 37:46Speaker 01

  Oh, boy.

• 37:47Speaker 02

I think it was because I had underwear.

• 37:49Speaker 01

I know, I was gonna ask how they were handling the underwear exposure.

• 37:53Dax Shepard?

Well, double whammy, there's the underwear, but then there's also just the like, we're a very pious, low poppy family, and you're a model, and now you're an actor. That just almost have been quite threatening with how worldly you were getting.

• 38:07Speaker 02

Maybe, although my mom really latched on to me being an actor. And she one time said, "You're a mole. I would pay if you want to have it removed, if that would make any difference." And she also said, "I read that blonde actresses get more work. I would be happy to pay for you to get your hair dyed."

• 38:26Speaker 01

  Oh, she's trying to help.

• 38:27Dax Shepard?

All terrible advice, but really sweet.

• 38:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 38:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that freckles, like, that's Gina Davis.

• 38:32Speaker 01

Yeah, the intention was kind of that.

• 38:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's very... Okay, so at that time, I just immediately built a huge fantasy around this. Tell me if I'm right or wrong. Your husband at the time was a restaurateur?

• 38:44Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 38:45Dax Shepard?

So when I think of New York, I'm thinking of Billy Joel's Big Shot. Like, going out to Elaine's, the whole New York City 1980. It wasn't so thrilling and glamorous?

• 38:58Speaker 02

  It wasn't glamorous.

• 38:59Dax Shepard?

  It wasn't?

• 39:00Speaker 02

  No, no.

• 39:01Dax Shepard?

  Did he own pizza shops?

• 39:02Speaker 02

  He worked at various restaurants.

• 39:04Dax Shepard?

But none of them were seeney ones?

• 39:06Speaker 02

  Nothing.

• 39:07Dax Shepard?

You weren't seeing Billy Joel gacked up in a corner?

• 39:10Speaker 02

No, nothing like that. I'm sorry. I'm sorry I didn't do that.

• 39:14Dax Shepard?

Were you going to Studio 54?

• 39:16Speaker 02

No, although my agency had a Christmas party at Studio 54. And they wanted to have models jump out of a giant present box.

• 39:26Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 39:27Speaker 02

That would, you know, the walls would fall down and sing Jingle Bell Rock.

• 39:30Speaker 01

  Oh, wow. Yeah, classic.

• 39:31Dax Shepard?

  Classic esteem builder.

• 39:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 39:33Speaker 02

So because I could sing-ish and do harmony, I was one of the, and the other two were like pretty famous, but I got to do that. So we dressed in these skimpy little dresses, which had jingle bells tying together the sides.

• 39:48Dax Shepard?

I'm picturing like almost the Hugh Hefner bunny outfit in that world.

• 39:51Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 39:52Dax Shepard?

  Okay, with some bells.

• 39:53Speaker 02

  Yeah, with little bells added.

• 39:55Dax Shepard?

What was your identity doing that you thought you were a wallflower in high school? But now you're quite beautiful in your own movies and lots of men probably are giving you a lot of attention. How are you integrating that into your identity?

• 40:08Speaker 02

I think I still thought it was kind of a trick. Oh, I also thought, because somebody happened to video me while we were in college and showed me the video and I was like, I'm kind of photogenic. In that instance, I am a trick.

• 40:24Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 40:26Speaker 02

If it's a photo or on screen.

• 40:28Dax Shepard?

You made space for, there's a version where I'm beautiful, but it's only through a lens.

• 40:34Speaker 02

  Only in this circumstance.

• 40:36Dax Shepard?

  I'll tell you my story.

• 40:37Speaker 02

  Okay.

• 40:38Dax Shepard?

I have been embarrassingly vulnerable to female attention and approval my whole life because I had this big window. I was like, no girls are ever gonna like me and I want a girl so bad. So did you have any of that where you just felt like that affection or approval held a weight that maybe otherwise it wouldn't have?

• 41:00Speaker 02

I think so, yeah. I was also very.

• 41:04Speaker 02

Impressed if somebody took that dress to me.

• 41:06Speaker 01

  You were like surprised.

• 41:07Dax Shepard?

I could like someone just because they liked me.

• 41:09Speaker 02

  Oh, me too.

• 41:10Dax Shepard?

  That's what I'm saying.

• 41:11Speaker 02

  Absolutely.

• 41:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 41:13Speaker 02

If they said, I really like, I said, I like you too.

• 41:16Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 41:17Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 41:18Dax Shepard?

That's a tricky, a tricky lane to pick. Then you're just like at the mercy of luck. Well, I hope the right dude arrives in front of me and says, I like you because I will like that person back.

• 41:29Speaker 02

All you have to do is show interest in me.

• 41:32Speaker 01

Yes. Yeah, it's not knowing yourself. It's not knowing what you really like.

• 41:39Speaker 02

  Or what you want.

• 41:39Speaker 01

Or what you want or need. Yeah.

• 41:41Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Also, it just goes to show like what you think you're meaning when you're an adult. Like you just don't know people's childhoods.

• 41:48Speaker 01

  No, exactly.

• 41:49Dax Shepard?

So like anyone that's meeting you and you're in movies and you're six feet tall and you're gorgeous. They're like, yeah, this girl's had every option her whole life. I'd be so lucky if she says hi to me back.

• 41:59Speaker 01

Yeah. And then you're sitting there like, oh my gosh, you just want someone to say they like me.

• 42:03Dax Shepard?

This guy actually likes me. Something's wrong with him.

• 42:06Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 42:07Dax Shepard?

Okay. So then for the next few years after Tootsie, you started doing a bunch of television. You were in Some of the Greats. You were in Knight Rider, fricking Remington Steele Family Ties. Now you were on Buffalo Bill for a year. I don't even know that show, but I was really excited to learn that you wrote an episode of it.

• 42:25Speaker 02

I did. So Dabney Coleman was in Tootsie and I met him there. And then he was getting ready to do this sitcom Buffalo Bill and recommended me to play his assistant. And I flew out to LA and immediately got the part. And then I had an idea for an episode that heavily featured my character.

• 42:48Speaker 01

  Assistant heavy.

• 42:50Speaker 02

And I told one of the producer, producer writer about it. And he said, well, okay, write that. And I was like, no, I don't know how to read it. Well, write it.

• 42:59Dax Shepard?

  That was cool of them.

• 43:00Speaker 02

Yes. So I started writing it and I thought, maybe this is good. And I wanted to show him. He said, I'm not reading it till it's done. So that forced me to finish it. And then with everybody tinkering with it, but yeah, we did it.

• 43:13Dax Shepard?

Was that so enormously rewarding to see an episode of television on air that you wrote?

• 43:18Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 43:19Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'm shocked you didn't get more addicted to that.

• 43:21Speaker 02

I know, because forever I've wished that I could write a screenplay or something, but I don't know. Have you written?

• 43:28Dax Shepard?

Oh, yeah, and I pride myself on it way more.

• 43:30Speaker 02

  Of course.

• 43:30Dax Shepard?

Like when we're traveling, if we're meeting people who have no clue who either of us are, and they say, what do you do? I'll always say writer. That's what I have the most pride in.

• 43:38Speaker 02

  I totally understand.

• 43:39Dax Shepard?

Okay, I just have to ask you this one because this is my all time. It's a three way tie, but it is number one. My all time comedies are Raising Arizona, Learning with Disaster, and Fletch.

• 43:52Speaker 02

  Oh, boy.

• 43:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 43:53Speaker 02

  I love your body, Larry.

• 43:56Speaker 02

You're one of the guys who would come up to me and say.

• 43:58Dax Shepard?

Oh, I wouldn't have done that to you, but yes, I would have been very thrilled you were around, that's for sure.

• 44:02Speaker 02

  Right.

• 44:03Dax Shepard?

What was that movie like? I just watched The Chevy Doc.

• 44:06Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 44:07Dax Shepard?

Did you watch that by chance?

• 44:08Speaker 02

I didn't even know there was.

• 44:09Dax Shepard?

I'd be so curious to hear from someone who did a movie with him. It's interesting. Most of the people that I've had the conversation with, they didn't walk away with what I did. I can just tell you what I walked away with, which is like, he is a genius. He's deeply uncomfortable and he has this crazy wit and he acts out with it a lot. And he's mean to people a lot, but I also don't know that he knows he's mean to people in the way that he clearly is mean to people. But at the end of the day, he is unhappy. He's uncomfortable and unhappy. So I have compassion for him. It's not like he was an asshole and he's having a blast. I think he's suffering the most.

• 44:45Speaker 02

  No, yeah.

• 44:46Dax Shepard?

Was there any hints of that when you were doing Fletch?

• 44:48Speaker 02

Well, you know, I had such a small part. I originally auditioned for the lead female character.

• 44:55Dax Shepard?

Mrs. Stan Hope, Alan Stanhope's wife.

• 44:58Speaker 02

  I've watched it a lot.

• 44:59Dax Shepard?

Yeah, so many times I could do every line.

• 45:01Speaker 02

I'm pretty sure they said, you're not attractive enough to play. That part.

• 45:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 45:06Speaker 02

But we think you're so funny. We want you in the movie.

• 45:09Dax Shepard?

And this was 85 where they would tell you.

• 45:11Speaker 01

  Yeah, that's crazy.

• 45:13Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:13Speaker 01

  That's so crazy.

• 45:14Speaker 02

I was wearing my hair all curly and weird. Anyway, they said, oh, there's this part of the morgue chief whose name is Larry, but we'll change it to a female for you. And I said, but I still want to be Larry.

• 45:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah. It made it very memorable that you were Larry.

• 45:28Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:29Dax Shepard?

  But was he grouchy?

• 45:30Speaker 02

  Not at all.

• 45:31Dax Shepard?

He was also at the peak. Everything was going his way at that moment.

• 45:34Speaker 02

Yeah. And he might've really enjoyed that movie or something because he seemed fun and funny and chill and great.

• 45:41Dax Shepard?

Okay. So you did the movie Transylvania 6500.

• 45:45Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 45:45Dax Shepard?

  And you met Jeff.

• 45:46Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 45:47Dax Shepard?

Had you seen him in things prior to that?

• 45:49Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 45:49Dax Shepard?

Okay. Cause I think The Fly is my introduction to Jeff Goldblum. He's immediately a unicorn, right? He's so peculiar in the most fascinating way.

• 46:00Speaker 02

  Fabulous way.

• 46:01Dax Shepard?

And was he that way on Transylvania?

• 46:03Speaker 02

Yes. Yeah. I was immediately smitten.

• 46:06Dax Shepard?

You sounded like him just then, yes.

• 46:08Speaker 02

  Yeah. Yes.

• 46:11Speaker 02

  Uh, yes.

• 46:14Speaker 02

  Sorry, Jeff.

• 46:16Speaker 02

But yeah, yeah, we hit it off.

• 46:17Dax Shepard?

  It was pretty immediate?

• 46:19Speaker 02

  Very.

• 46:19Dax Shepard?

Off to the races. Okay. Yeah. Then you do The Fly and The Fly is a mega movie. What a movie.

• 46:25Speaker 02

Really was. Yeah. David Cronenberg, who wrote it also, you probably never saw the original Fly, but

• 46:31Dax Shepard?

  Nope.

• 46:31Speaker 02

It's goofy. It didn't mean to be.

• 46:33Dax Shepard?

That was in that spell of weird monster movies, right?

• 46:35Speaker 02

  Weird monster movies.

• 46:36Dax Shepard?

  Swamp thing and.

• 46:37Speaker 02

I wouldn't be surprised if Vincent Price was in it. And when the character turned into a fly, he had a human body and a giant fly head. And then they showed the fly toward the end had his human head on it, but tiny. And he was saying, help me.

• 46:57Speaker 02

But then it gets eaten by a spider.

• 47:01Dax Shepard?

This has to be a very joyful phase of your life.

• 47:03Speaker 02

  Very.

• 47:04Dax Shepard?

You meet someone, you fall in love, he's a unicorn, and then you guys do three movies together.

• 47:08Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:09Dax Shepard?

  Back to back to back.

• 47:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 47:10Dax Shepard?

Was there any stress or challenge to that or no?

• 47:13Speaker 02

No, it was all fun. And in one, he's a fly and another one, he's an alien.

• 47:19Dax Shepard?

  Earth girls are easy.

• 47:20Speaker 02

Earth girls are easy. Yeah. It was kind of crazy.

• 47:23Dax Shepard?

So The Fly is huge. I guess I would have expected after Tootsie, you'd had more movie type offers.

• 47:30Speaker 02

  Right.

• 47:30Dax Shepard?

But it takes The Fly. That kind of gets the ball rolling. And then the kind of. Big breakthrough for, well, that Beetlejuice is huge. What's it like working with Tim Burton?

• 47:40Speaker 02

Oh, so great. I went to meet him to talk about being in the movie. And he's an illustrator too, you know, he used to do animation and all the walls were covered with his drawings of what Beetlejuice was gonna look like. And it was fabulous. And I found out later that this happened, that I said to him, I wanna be in this movie cuz I get it. I get this movie. And he told me later that he wanted to hire me because he wanted at least somebody on the set who knew what the movie was about. He's like, cuz I sure don't.

• 48:13Speaker 02

  So that was great.

• 48:14Dax Shepard?

Okay, accidental tourist, then kinda now everything changes cuz you get nominated and then you win an Academy Award for that. You're pretty young still, yeah?

• 48:23Speaker 02

I'm just like thirty-two or something.

• 48:25Dax Shepard?

Yeah, thirty-two. Feels very young to win an Oscar nowadays.

• 48:29Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 48:29Dax Shepard?

And what did you have to learn on that movie with William Hurt's just kind of darkness?

• 48:37Speaker 02

Actually, so for that movie, I hired an acting coach. I had studied acting, but I had never worked with a coach. But I thought, oh, this is so important. I don't wanna mess it up. And he actually had heard what Bill is like to work with. So he was like, we're gonna proof you from being drawn off track by the way he is because he did live in a dark place. I think all of it was kind of painful for him in some way. And so I was such a caretaky, people pleaser type. If he had been like that, and I had no idea he was going to be like that, all I would be trying to do is make him happy, fix him up. You know, what can I do?

• 49:17Dax Shepard?

So if he's unhappy, given your childhood, you would have likely interpreted those like, well, I've been bad.

• 49:24Speaker 02

What is it about me that he doesn't like? Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I learned what to do if that happened. The coach said, if you say, oh, how are you? And he says, I'm terrible. You're gonna say, I'm sorry to hear that. Okay. Just not get sucked into that. And it was really unnatural.

• 49:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 49:43Speaker 02

But I practiced it and I was able to do that. Yeah.

• 49:47Speaker 01

  It's like very codependence teaching.

• 49:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, breaking.

• 49:51Speaker 02

  Right.

• 49:51Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 49:52Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 49:52Dax Shepard?

And submersion therapy all at once.

• 49:54Speaker 01

  True.

• 49:54Dax Shepard?

Immersion, submersion. Well, yeah, this is the kind of the theme of your memoir is basically like. A lot of these roles have forced you to take on qualities that otherwise would have maybe been unobtainable.

• 50:09Speaker 02

  Right.

• 50:09Dax Shepard?

And that certainly feels like a really good one. Not that you perfected it, but if I could have learned at 32, I'm currently learning it. I live with three women and it has occurred to me, I can't be affected by their emotions or this isn't going to work. Like this will be untenable. If I'm upset every time they're upset and trying to figure out what I gotta do to fix it, I'm gonna die. But it's like taking that life experience and forcing me to learn that. So I would have loved to have learned that at 32.

• 50:38Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 50:39Dax Shepard?

  But.

• 50:40Speaker 02

It didn't apply to anybody else.

• 50:43Dax Shepard?

You didn't wrap it onto anybody else.

• 50:44Speaker 02

I learned how to do it with Bill Hurd.

• 50:47Dax Shepard?

So you're good. If you're with him, you're fine, but anyone else, you're still vulnerable. Okay. Immediately after, now we're on a fucking roll. Now we go into Tama and Louise there pretty quick after that. And Ridley Scott, obviously one of the great kind of masters to ever do it.

• 51:04Speaker 02

  Just a genius.

• 51:05Dax Shepard?

Heartbreaking end. What did he bring to that?

• 51:08Speaker 02

You know what? I just watched it with a friend two nights ago. I mean, I've seen it a million times, but I watched it again and I was just so bowled over by everything he brought to it. There's so many details that I kept saying, that was Ridley's idea. That was Ridley, he did that. You know, like a motorcycle suddenly scream by or some vehicle shooting water out at the car and we dodge it and all kinds of just visual stuff. A crop duster plane flies over the convertible and just he brought such profound visual element to it. Besides being a genius director with all the acting and everything.

• 51:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, as an actor, you can miss all that stuff. You're like focused on your scene. We have this three page scene in this car. You didn't even notice a fucking crop duster probably in the back or if you saw it, you would think it was coincidental.

• 51:54Speaker 02

  Right.

• 51:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you're kind of unaware of how much of the sausage is being made around you.

• 51:58Speaker 02

He made the movie so much bigger than it could have been.

• 52:02Dax Shepard?

And then Susan arrives in your life as kind of a real signpost of like some things you'd like to take on.

• 52:09Speaker 02

Yeah. Oh, man. She changed my life more than anybody and we're still ride or die. So the first day I met her was a good example. We were getting together with Ridley, just the three of us. We're gonna go through the script and see if anybody had any comments or thoughts. And there was a few little things I wanted to bring up, but I had tried to figure out the girliest possible way to bring them up. With this, I can just mention on the set.

• 52:32Dax Shepard?

Your pattern at that time was every sentence you said was mitigated with, "This is probably a dumb idea," or "I'm sorry to even bring this up," right? You were constantly apologizing for having an opinion.

• 52:42Speaker 02

Yes, apologizing for existing, let alone having thoughts about something. But so we sit down, crack open the script, and on page one, Susan says, "Ridley, you know what? My first line here, I don't think we need it. Or we could put it in the next scene." And he was like, "Yeah, sure." And I was literally like, "What is she doing? What's this? How did she just do that? How come she didn't find out first how he'd react or something?"

• 53:07Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 53:08Speaker 02

And the whole day was like that, the whole experience. And then the entire movie was like that. I had never been in the presence of a woman who doesn't apologize for existing, ever.

• 53:23Dax Shepard?

And advocates for herself without any fear of...

• 53:26Speaker 02

Right, and advocates for herself. And everybody loved her. It wasn't like, we like Gina better because she's so wimpy.

• 53:34Speaker 01

  Right.

• 53:34Speaker 02

Everybody adored her. It wasn't like she was fighting, but she just knows what she wants and says what she wants.

• 53:40Dax Shepard?

Were you trying to figure out how she had become that way? That would have been my great fascination. It's like, how did she end up this way?

• 53:48Speaker 02

I even told just this minute, I never thought about, "How did she manage to be that way?" She was the oldest of many siblings.

• 53:57Dax Shepard?

  She's a boss. Yeah, yeah.

• 53:59Speaker 01

She might have also just decided or understood that her value was more than just how she looked or being this very female presence, that she offered something else. She offered thoughts and her brain and something, maybe she was rewarded.

• 54:15Speaker 02

Exactly, where it seems like it should be absolutely natural that you were like that.

• 54:19Speaker 01

  But it's not.

• 54:20Speaker 02

But it sure wasn't for me.

• 54:22Speaker 01

Not for a lot of women, it's hard.

• 54:24Dax Shepard?

Now, what's interesting is everyone now will recognize that movie as like this very seminal feminist movie.

• 54:31Dax Shepard?

But I don't think I even realized this till I was researching you that that was not the takeaway at the time when it came out.

• 54:38Speaker 02

  Right.

• 54:38Dax Shepard?

Like, that was one of the weird things that were happening around that movie. Because it was wildly successful.

• 54:43Speaker 02

Right. A lot of the reviewers had a problem with it. Like, a week after it came out, Susan and I were on the cover of Time, but there were two editorials denouncing the movie about how bad this is. This is a horrible idea. And a lot of reviews were like, this is male-bashing. Hmm.

• 55:02Dax Shepard?

You mean rapist-bashing? There's hopefully a difference between men and rapists.

• 55:07Speaker 02

Rapist. And there's seven important male characters. And, oh my god, what a horrible message. Now the women have guns.

• 55:15Speaker 01

  Oh, my gosh.

• 55:16Speaker 02

So it was really frowned on, but it didn't impact its success. People really liked it and it did well.

• 55:22Dax Shepard?

But but culture was not there yet.

• 55:24Speaker 02

  Right.

• 55:25Dax Shepard?

So you got nominated for that movie.

• 55:28Speaker 02

  And Susan, too.

• 55:28Dax Shepard?

  And Susan as well.

• 55:30Speaker 01

  So fun.

• 55:30Dax Shepard?

We did talk about Susan a lot, so I don't want to be accused of now I gotta talk about the one man in the movie.

• 55:35Speaker 02

  Oh, no, no, no.

• 55:36Dax Shepard?

But I'm so in love with him. I'm just so head over heels in love with that.

• 55:40Speaker 02

Harvey Keitel is just gorgeous, I know.

• 55:42Dax Shepard?

  Harvey Keitel.

• 55:43Speaker 02

Oh, you mean. Oh, you mean.

• 55:45Dax Shepard?

No, it's like the piano. He's nude in the piano, which I appreciate it. Harvey Keitel. Yeah, but obviously Brad Pitt, this is his breakout role.

• 55:53Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 55:54Dax Shepard?

Did you think when you were watching, like, yeah, this motherfucker is gonna really be a thing?

• 55:58Speaker 01

  He's a star.

• 55:59Dax Shepard?

  Or no?

• 55:59Speaker 02

I didn't think this motherfucker. I thought this wonderful human being is just gonna be all that. I was positive that the reaction he got was the reaction he was gonna get.

• 56:12Dax Shepard?

And you have a nice, fun glimpse of him because you have a glimpse of him probably more aw shucksie Missouri boy than this international movie star.

• 56:21Speaker 02

  Oh, absolutely.

• 56:22Dax Shepard?

Yes, what was he like back then?

• 56:23Speaker 02

Oh, god, yeah. He was so fun, so sweet, so excited, so happy to be doing it, and playful also, which I think you could tell in the way he plays the character, but. He was just having fun with everything and loose. And for his first really big role, he just killed it.

• 56:43Dax Shepard?

Was everyone in love with him?

• 56:44Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 56:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, sure.

• 56:45Speaker 01

  Well, duh. We still are.

• 56:47Speaker 02

We all are. But I have to tell you a funny story. Did you hear about my George Clooney story?

• 56:52Dax Shepard?

  No.

• 56:52Speaker 02

So I was getting on a plane in Europe one time, and all the flight attendants were waiting at the door for me to show up. And they said, guess who you're sitting next to? George Clooney.

• 57:04Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 57:05Speaker 02

And for once in my life, I said the right thing at the right time. And I said, guess who he's sitting next to?

• 57:10Speaker 01

  That's right.

• 57:12Speaker 02

  Right?

• 57:13Speaker 01

  That is right.

• 57:14Speaker 02

And I was like, I can't believe I came up with that.

• 57:16Speaker 01

  Oh, good for you.

• 57:18Speaker 02

So I sat down. He's charming. He's gregarious. He's telling stories and we're talking. And then at one point, he says, you know, I hate that Brad Pitt. I said, isn't he like your best friend or something? He said, no, I hate him because he got the part in Some of the Ways. I said, oh, oh, really? Did you want that part? And he said, couldn't you tell when I auditioned with you?

• 57:38Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 57:40Dax Shepard?

  He had read with you?

• 57:41Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 57:42Dax Shepard?

  That's hilarious. Were you embarrassed?

• 57:44Speaker 02

I'm so wimpy. I didn't say, no, I didn't remember you at all. Ha, you know, I said, oh, right. No, I did.

• 57:51Speaker 01

  Oh, no.

• 57:53Speaker 02

He would have laughed if I said.

• 57:54Speaker 01

Hey, of course he would have.

• 57:56Dax Shepard?

I might have done the same thing.

• 57:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 57:58Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 57:59Speaker 01

  No.

• 57:59Dax Shepard?

You wouldn't make someone feel like they were unmemorable.

• 58:02Speaker 01

Well, he made, he made her feel like you don't remember. Then you could be like, I don't.

• 58:07Dax Shepard?

  That's a take.

• 58:08Speaker 01

That's a Susan take. So Susan would have done.

• 58:12Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I think it's like, because I've been in this position a bunch of times. And it's like, the last thing you want is to tell someone like, oh, yeah, you're unmemorable. Not like, hey, I've met 11,000 people this year.

• 58:23Speaker 01

But he is putting her in the position. It's one thing if he's just like, oh, yeah, I auditioned with you. Then you might be like, oh, I know. I remember. Like, then you want to make them feel good. But if it's like, you don't remember, it's a trap.

• 58:38Dax Shepard?

So then 92 League of Your Own comes along. This is a huge triumph as well. Open number one, 10th biggest movie of the year. You, Tom Hanks Madonna. Had Madonna done much before then?

• 58:50Speaker 02

  Acting?

• 58:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 58:51Speaker 02

I don't think so. Evita was after that?

• 58:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, for sure Evita was.

• 58:56Speaker 02

Yeah, and we didn't know what to expect. When she was gonna show up, she was gonna have an entourage. What is it gonna be? She was so normal, low key, team player. Yeah.

• 59:06Dax Shepard?

For people listening today, you have to imagine Taylor Swift's in your book.

• 59:10Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 59:10Dax Shepard?

I mean, and then some, right? Madonna was.

• 59:13Speaker 01

  Beyonce, maybe.

• 59:14Speaker 02

  Oh, my God, beyond.

• 59:15Dax Shepard?

She was already an icon, but she was still very young. Were you guys bros? Did you get on well?

• 59:19Speaker 02

All of us got along great. I was mostly close with Laurie Petty.

• 59:23Dax Shepard?

This is again, in your book, this is another one of the things like you had done no athletics. And then you have to be the best baseball player alive.

• 59:31Speaker 02

  Anyone has ever seen.

• 59:32Speaker 01

  Oh, God.

• 59:34Dax Shepard?

But you took to it really quickly. You surprised yourself?

• 59:36Speaker 02

Yes, I surprised everybody, I think. But everybody else had been training in baseball for a while. But I had to catch up and the coaches soon started saying, you know, you have a lot of untapped athletic ability. And I'm like, when did I ever think I was gonna hear that? That's crazy. And I did, and I pulled it off, I think.

• 59:55Speaker 01

  Definitely.

• 59:56Speaker 02

  Thought I could really play.

• 59:58Dax Shepard?

Up to this point, you've had a really wonderful incremental. Everything gets a little better than the last thing. Had you settled into like, oh, that'll be the pattern? Or were you looking around and going like, no, everyone takes it on the chin. I will also take it on the chin. What were you thinking? Do you think it was just gonna be a completely linear rise? And all the movies would work?

• 1:00:21Speaker 02

You're asking me questions that not only nobody asked me, but I haven't even thought about. What did I think?

• 1:00:27Dax Shepard?

Yeah, because we gotta go back to 1992 for this question. This is a minute ago.

• 1:00:30Speaker 02

I think I felt like things are gonna work out pretty good. I didn't have a feeling like, well, I've been the lead or one of the leads in two movies in a row. You know, a year apart.

• 1:00:39Dax Shepard?

And nominated for all the movies.

• 1:00:41Speaker 01

  Won an Oscar.

• 1:00:42Dax Shepard?

Winning a Golden Globe. All the proof is there.

• 1:00:45Speaker 02

Yeah, I don't know what I thought. I honestly don't remember what I thought. Or if I was surprised that didn't happen or anything.

• 1:00:54Dax Shepard?

I didn't have nearly the run you had, but I did have a run where I had a few hits in a row and they were all things that shouldn't have been hits. And I went, oh, well, duh, now when I go to this movie that's got a big budget with a great director, who fucking knows what's gonna happen? And then like that movie didn't work. I was like, oh, Jesus, now what? I thought for sure, okay, we made it out of the 10 year fucking doldrums where finally it's happening. And then I climb up to this rung of the ladder and then very rude awakening like, no, if you have a couple in a row that don't work, it's rough.

• 1:01:25Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 1:01:26Dax Shepard?

So anyways, you had a couple in the row that didn't work as anticipated. One of them's my favorite movie that you ever did, which is Long Kiss Goodnight. If you haven't seen Long Kiss Goodnight.

• 1:01:34Speaker 01

  I haven't seen it.

• 1:01:35Speaker 02

In fact, I gotta show my daughter.

• 1:01:37Speaker 01

No, I wanna see it. I'll watch it tonight.

• 1:01:39Dax Shepard?

Monica, let me hit you with the premise. She is a housewife kind of mom type lady.

• 1:01:45Speaker 01

  Uh huh. Trad wife.

• 1:01:46Dax Shepard?

  She gets amnesia.

• 1:01:48Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:01:49Dax Shepard?

She has amnesia. Had amnesia. Doesn't realize she had amnesia. It's before born. It's kind of born.

• 1:01:54Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 1:01:55Dax Shepard?

And then slowly starts realizing after an accident that she's got skills she can't explain.

• 1:02:01Speaker 01

  Ooh.

• 1:02:02Dax Shepard?

  And she's actually an assassin.

• 1:02:04Speaker 01

Oh, cool. And very born. Yeah.

• 1:02:05Dax Shepard?

It's just born. The script's great. You're fucking brilliant. The premise is perfect. And then Sam Jackson.

• 1:02:11Speaker 01

  Come on.

• 1:02:12Dax Shepard?

What's that line he has? Like you ask him if he's Mormon? He's like, yeah, that's why I just had two Jack and Cokes and a pack of Newport's or some shit like that. He has some great line.

• 1:02:21Speaker 02

  So great.

• 1:02:22Dax Shepard?

He was just coming off of Pulp Fiction. Yep.

• 1:02:24Speaker 02

  He was very hot.

• 1:02:25Dax Shepard?

Were you so pumped to work with him?

• 1:02:26Speaker 02

Oh, my God. Yeah, yeah. And then he's the greatest guy ever.

• 1:02:30Dax Shepard?

  He's the coolest dude.

• 1:02:31Speaker 02

The coolest dude ever. All we did was laugh and have fun. We had so much fun.

• 1:02:36Speaker 01

  But it didn't work?

• 1:02:38Dax Shepard?

  That one did fine.

• 1:02:39Speaker 02

  We thought it was gonna.

• 1:02:40Dax Shepard?

The movie before Cutthroat Island was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest financial. That's been way blown away by now.

• 1:02:48Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:02:48Dax Shepard?

Even when I see the price of that movie, it's kind of cute. It was like 110 million and that was like the biggest disaster ever.

• 1:02:54Speaker 01

  Oh, God. That's, yeah, nowadays.

• 1:02:56Dax Shepard?

Now people are writing off like 400 million.

• 1:02:57Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:02:58Speaker 02

  I know, I know.

• 1:03:00Dax Shepard?

You process that heartbreak of that. You're also married to the director. I'm guessing when I've had movies that failed that I wrote and directed, I've got three months or I'm just depressed. You know, I did that for two and a half years and now that happened.

• 1:03:14Speaker 02

  Oh, I

• 1:03:15Dax Shepard?

And I'm naturally going to be depressed.

• 1:03:16Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:03:17Dax Shepard?

And now if my wife was also shouldering that same thing, I don't know who's available to nurture.

• 1:03:24Speaker 02

Yeah, well, you kind of had to nurture each other through that. And we knew we had Long Kiss coming up, so that helped. But I was going to tell you about the pirate movie.

• 1:03:33Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah, tell me. Cutthroat.

• 1:03:34Speaker 02

Cutthroat Island, yeah. So Cutthroat Island, it was going to star Michael Keaton. He asked Rennie, I was already with Rennie and maybe married already. He wanted some substantial actress to play the female part, which was much smaller than his and all that. So he was begging Rennie to get me to do it. And I was like, I think I really do want to do it. And Rennie was begging me, please, please.

• 1:03:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, is that part stressful?

• 1:04:00Speaker 02

  Oh, it's very stressful.

• 1:04:01Speaker 01

  Yeah, that is.

• 1:04:02Dax Shepard?

Like, you want to do your husband or wife of whatever favor they want, but also I don't want to gamble my career.

• 1:04:07Speaker 02

Yeah, so anyway, I finally got my arm twisted enough that I said that I would do it. And then Michael eventually dropped out. He just suddenly, I'm not doing it. And Rennie and I, I mean, he wasn't that crazy about the script either. And so we were like, oh, we're getting out of it. We don't have to do it. Oh, my God, yeah, we're like dancing around. And then Mario Cesar, it was Corralco was the producers. And I had the same agency as Michael. And I thought, well, easily I'll get out of this. And they were told, no, there's no way Gina's getting out of this. She is doing it. We'll sue her. Why does Michael Douglas get to get out of it?

• 1:04:51Speaker 02

And I don't get to get out of it. I'm only a small potato compared to him.

• 1:04:55Dax Shepard?

Wait, was it Michael Douglas or Michael Keaton?

• 1:04:57Speaker 02

  Michael Douglas.

• 1:04:58Dax Shepard?

  Oh, Michael Douglas.

• 1:04:59Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 1:04:59Dax Shepard?

Okay, yeah, yeah, that's great, great, great, great.

• 1:05:01Speaker 02

Yeah, Michael Douglas. So we were like, oh, God, now we gotta do it. And we got Matthew Modine, who is fabulous in it and a great guy and a lot of fun, but. It was really against our will.

• 1:05:13Dax Shepard?

Right. So it was one of those ones that didn't feel right from the jump and then turned out. So maybe we learned like a gut intuition lesson off of that one?

• 1:05:22Speaker 02

Well, yeah. I mean, don't get talked into anything ever again. But we went into it with a good will, you know, and I trained to trade to do piratical stuff.

• 1:05:33Dax Shepard?

  You learned to swashbuckle?

• 1:05:35Speaker 02

I buckled my spy. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I had to learn horseback riding and all that stuff.

• 1:05:42Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 1:05:48Dax Shepard?

Monica, with summer ending or heading into fall, I've been researching a nice, quick getaway location, and I keep coming back to Scottsdale, Arizona.

• 1:07:30Speaker 01

Ooh, Scottsdale's good. What's drawing you to it?

• 1:07:33Dax Shepard?

Well, first of all, I have this wonderful memory of going there as a kid, when I would go see my stepdad when he was working out there. The weather is perfect in fall. Warm, sunny, no humidity. And you can really do whatever you want with your time there. I want to do a sunrise hike through the Sonoran Desert, be surrounded by Sowaro, and then at the same afternoon, just completely melt into a spa treatment at one of their luxury resorts.

• 1:07:58Speaker 01

Oh, that sounds amazing. I want to do that. Also, I was there visiting my brother once, and I loved Old Town Scottsdale. It's so walkable. They have galleries and cute little restaurants and shops. The food scene alone is worth the trip.

• 1:08:12Dax Shepard?

What I keep reading is that it's luxurious, but not stuffy. There's no pressure to do it a certain way. You can explore public art, check out the architecture, go off-roading in the desert, or just sit and watch a sunset.

• 1:08:24Speaker 01

It really is the perfect fall reset.

We get support from Skims. So Monica just informed me that she's a girl's girl, and I nodded like I knew exactly what that meant.

• 1:09:44Speaker 01

Yeah, but the girls who get it, they get it.

• 1:09:47Dax Shepard?

Okay, but for those of us who are clearly not girls, walk me through it.

• 1:09:50Speaker 01

Well, you know how much I love my Skims fleece joggers because the plush fleece is so soft, it's cozy, it's really comfortable without feeling too heavy. Well, I went to friend them, and she would not stop talking about how comfy they were. She almost didn't give them back to me, which was upsetting, but I'm a girl's girl, so I let her have it.

• 1:10:08Dax Shepard?

  Great, great, great.

• 1:10:09Speaker 01

So the sleep sets are awesome because they are very soft and comfortable, but they're cute. If I'm in my sleep set, I feel fine about going down the street to pick up my food. I'm still looking cute, but I'm comfy and I'm cozy.

• 1:10:22Dax Shepard?

  Roger.

• 1:10:23Speaker 01

A really fun thing to do is if you're going on vacation with your girlfriends, to get matching Skims pajamas. I've done this with Callie, and it is so fun. First of all, the pics are so cute, but also it's just fun and friendship.

• 1:10:36Dax Shepard?

So a girl's girl is looking out for your friends with better loungewear. I get it. Am I one of your girls now?

• 1:10:41Speaker 01

You are. You and the other girlies can shop my favorite loungewear and pajamas at skims.com. After you place your order, be sure to let them know we sent you. Select podcasts in the survey and be sure to select our show in the drop down menu that follows.

• 1:11:01Dax Shepard?

Okay, I just, one fun thing that people certainly want to know is that in 99, you tried out for the US Olympic archery team.

• 1:11:10Speaker 02

What? What did I do in 99?

• 1:11:13Dax Shepard?

Which you had started in 97, so you'd only been doing it for two years.

• 1:11:18Speaker 02

  Two and a half.

• 1:11:19Dax Shepard?

And what, you had seen it in something? Why did you even get interested?

• 1:11:22Speaker 02

I had to learn to play baseball, and then I had to learn smart fucking, you know, and horseback riding and gun shooting, and then ice skating and gun shooting, while ice skating for longest good night, all these skills. And I was kinda good at all of them.

• 1:11:37Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:37Speaker 02

And I had not had any clue that I was coordinated, and so it was so much fun. And then I thought. I think I'd like to take up a sport in real life and not the movie version of it because no matter what, if I didn't catch the ball, then do another take.

• 1:11:54Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:11:55Dax Shepard?

  Put in the stunt double.

• 1:11:56Speaker 02

So then I was just watching the Olympics on TV in Atlanta and there was a lot of coverage of archery because the American men's team was winning all the medals. And I thought, you know, that's really beautiful and it's very dramatic. And I did learn how to shoot pistols really well and it's kind of a weapon. So I thought, I'm going to try archery and found a coach and became utterly obsessed with it.

• 1:12:22Dax Shepard?

Like, how frequently are you doing it?

• 1:12:24Speaker 02

Practicing every day, like four or five hours.

• 1:12:26Dax Shepard?

Four or five hours in your, what, backyard shooting on a hay bale?

• 1:12:30Speaker 02

  No, no.

• 1:12:31Dax Shepard?

  Don't be stupid, Dave.

• 1:12:32Speaker 02

  No, I didn't.

• 1:12:35Speaker 02

No, I was just, hay bale could not stop an arrow. You really have to be somewhere safe to do that. So I'd go to a range and meet with my coach constantly. And then he told me I had to start competing and I was like, oh, no, I'm not anywhere near. He said, no, no, it's about getting better. You go to get better. So I'd be competing and then I won the California Cup one year.

• 1:12:58Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:12:59Dax Shepard?

And you said what you liked about it is it was objective versus how subjective your career was.

• 1:13:03Speaker 02

Exactly. Are you hitting the target or not?

• 1:13:06Dax Shepard?

Do you think it was a salve for dealing with the kind of disappointment and uneasiness about what was next?

• 1:13:13Speaker 02

  Could be.

• 1:13:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, because again, it's a control thing. Back to the compulsive behavior, it's like repetitive, it's singular.

• 1:13:19Speaker 02

  Very repetitive.

• 1:13:20Dax Shepard?

You've narrowed your world, which is scary right now and unpredictable, to a red dot. I mean, this all feels very regulating.

• 1:13:28Speaker 02

Yes, very regulating and very specific. And I had the time. I didn't work that soon after Long Island night, so I had two and a half years to focus only on that.

• 1:13:40Dax Shepard?

So you entered in 99 to go to the Olympic trials?

• 1:13:45Speaker 02

I qualified as a semifinalist for the Olympic trials.

• 1:13:48Dax Shepard?

300 people entered and you finished 24th?

• 1:13:50Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:13:51Speaker 02

It was 300 people at the national tournament and then they took the top 32 could be in the semifinals.

• 1:13:58Dax Shepard?

  You were in those?

• 1:13:58Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:13:59Dax Shepard?

And then you somehow got a wild card and went to Athens?

• 1:14:02Speaker 02

That was in Sydney. So Sydney built all of their venues. Way before they hosted the Olympics and a year before it, they tried out every single sport and they had the top people come and just to run it and make sure everything was.

• 1:14:17Dax Shepard?

  Dress rehearsal.

• 1:14:18Speaker 02

Yeah. And so the real team went, they said, you could come too. So I got to wear the uniform and walk out and hear the music and everything. It was so fun.

• 1:14:29Speaker 01

  Oh, my gosh.

• 1:14:29Dax Shepard?

  That's fantastic.

• 1:14:30Speaker 02

I didn't win that one, though.

• 1:14:31Speaker 01

That's okay. That's okay. You got to go.

• 1:14:36Dax Shepard?

How old were you when you had your daughter?

• 1:14:37Speaker 02

  Forty six.

• 1:14:38Dax Shepard?

Okay. So I wonder if you have, I have such great gratitude for waiting to thirty eight, right? There were so many times when both little kids are screaming where I'm like, oh, man, I don't know if I would have had the patience for this in my twenties. Also, my career was sorted enough. I just, all the mountains I was trying to climb, tired of that. And so this, I could really, do you have that kind of gratitude for waiting later? Or did you have moments where you're like, God, I should have done this 20 years earlier?

• 1:15:04Speaker 02

No, no, I always was grateful that it was later. And I felt like it was important that I had a stronger sense of self, who I was.

• 1:15:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Cause you're gonna have to model what it is to be a woman in this society of ours.

• 1:15:19Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:15:19Dax Shepard?

But you're watching children's programming with her when she's like two and you start noticing a lot of little boys in these shows.

• 1:15:27Speaker 02

I did. The very first thing I showed her, I had her on my lap and I'm thinking, oh, this is great. It's a preschool show. I think it's because of Thelma and Louise and it really heightened my awareness of how women are portrayed because women had so few opportunities to come out of a movie feeling empowered by the female characters. So I immediately noticed that there seemed to be far more male characters. I even looked it up and they had one female character in this large cast. And I was like, well, that's weird. And then rented a video and it was like that, a movie that came out and I'd go, wait a minute.

• 1:16:02Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:16:03Dax Shepard?

And you were thinking what I would be thinking, which is like, oh, this has already been fixed.

• 1:16:07Speaker 02

  I had thought that.

• 1:16:08Dax Shepard?

Yeah. We're like, we're 12 years past Thelma and Louise. I assume this has been straightened out.

• 1:16:13Speaker 02

Oh, right. Absolutely. And then I immediately kind of went global with it because I'm like, Wait, so we're training kids from minute one to have unconscious gender bias? How can they not get it when every single situation has one female?

• 1:16:31Dax Shepard?

Turned out to be three to one.

• 1:16:32Speaker 02

The little rascals, you know, like when they got Darla and that was it.

• 1:16:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah, we got it. We got Darla. Back to the boys.

• 1:16:38Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:16:38Dax Shepard?

How could a young girl not into it? Well, there's one third as many role, one fourth as many opportunities for me. Like, I should recognize that. That's the world I'm entering.

• 1:16:50Speaker 02

Right. And also, how are boys aren't going to recognize that they're more important than girls?

• 1:16:54Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 1:16:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, right.

• 1:16:55Speaker 02

How are they even going to care about the female character?

• 1:16:58Dax Shepard?

  They're being told what's important.

• 1:16:59Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 1:17:00Dax Shepard?

So, but you had a novel approach to addressing this.

• 1:17:03Speaker 02

Well, I went to the Olympics and it, everything I do, I had to be careful about taking it up because

• 1:17:08Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:17:09Speaker 02

whatever it is, I want to go to the Olympics. But I asked people constantly in the industry, whatever meeting I had, whoever it was, I'd say, have you ever noticed how few female characters there are in entertainment made for kids? And every single person said, oh, no, no, no, that's not true anymore. No, that's been fixed. And they'd say, we fixed it at our studio, at our production company, whatever. And they would very often name a movie with one female character as proof that gender inequality was not a thing anymore.

• 1:17:41Dax Shepard?

It's like saying, well, we have Obama as a president, racism's over.

• 1:17:45Speaker 02

Exactly. So it made me realize this is utterly unconscious. And they think it's not true. So if I was able to, with data, show them that it is true, this big imbalance, maybe they won't want to change. So I sponsored this largest research study ever done on kids, TV and movies.

• 1:18:06Dax Shepard?

Through the Annenberg School at USC, were they your partners?

• 1:18:08Speaker 02

  That was.

• 1:18:09Speaker 01

  That's incredible.

• 1:18:10Speaker 02

At that time, yes. And then started visiting anybody who makes children's entertainment. The first studio that we went to, we finished the presentation and their heads were in their hands. Their jaws were on the ground. They were like, how did we not know this? All we care about is doing right by kids, and we never thought of this?

• 1:18:31Dax Shepard?

Because at that time, at the conclusion of your study, right, was it was three boys to every girl?

• 1:18:36Speaker 02

Right. And the lead characters, it was 11 to one.

• 1:18:40Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:18:40Speaker 02

For a lead female character. And crowd scenes and everything were wildly imbalanced. So...

• 1:18:47Speaker 02

We went everywhere. Everybody was horrified and everybody started changing.

• 1:18:52Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:18:53Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that was 2004. Where are we at now? I think 2020 was the data I read. So even four years ago, where was it?

• 1:18:59Speaker 02

Yeah, now we're at parity in children's TV shows.

• 1:19:04Speaker 01

Wow, that's amazing. Oh, my God.

• 1:19:07Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:19:08Speaker 01

You should be so proud of yourself.

• 1:19:10Dax Shepard?

  15, 16 years, yeah.

• 1:19:11Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:19:12Speaker 01

  Oh, that's incredible.

• 1:19:13Speaker 02

Yeah, the latest study we did, we looked specifically at new kids programs that just came out. And it was 50/50.

• 1:19:21Speaker 01

Oh, my goodness. That is so, what an accomplishment. Of all your accomplishments, I hope that's maybe one of your highest. That's incredible.

• 1:19:30Dax Shepard?

She also created the Benton Film Festival, Bentonville. Are you friends with one of the Waltons? Is that a Walton project?

• 1:19:35Speaker 02

No, Walmart came up with the idea, actually, of having a film festival that focused on diversity. And somehow thought of me.

• 1:19:44Dax Shepard?

Probably not somehow, you're like, yes, the most seminal feminist movie ever.

• 1:19:49Speaker 02

  Yeah, I co-founded it.

• 1:19:50Dax Shepard?

A cool thing about the Waltons is to get their inheritance, all the children, they have to take on a large public works project and make their community better. So Bentonville is this very weird town in the middle of Arkansas, right?

• 1:20:04Speaker 02

  You've been there?

• 1:20:04Dax Shepard?

I have, yeah. But they have like one of the best museums in the world and they have the best bicycle parkway, right? They have all these like incredible installations because of how they get their inheritance, which is so cool.

• 1:20:15Speaker 02

It's so incredible. And Alice Walton just built the best medical school ever built. And it's, I think it's either free or something.

• 1:20:24Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:20:24Speaker 02

If you agree to stay in the area and work for a certain number of years. It's this pocket of progressive explosion. It's incredible.

• 1:20:32Dax Shepard?

With like some of the best art pieces in the world. It's hilarious. You can imagine one day Bentonville being like this weird Eden that they have created through all these public works projects.

• 1:20:41Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:20:42Dax Shepard?

  Okay, The Burrows.

• 1:20:43Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:20:44Dax Shepard?

I'm watching it and I love it.

• 1:20:46Speaker 02

  Oh.

• 1:20:47Dax Shepard?

It's sweeping Netflix by storm, right? I think I saw it as number one.

• 1:20:51Speaker 01

  Oh, amazing.

• 1:20:52Dax Shepard?

Well, this is so wonderful and encouraging. Okay, so The Burrows. You explain how you want to explain it. I'm gonna use a reference that only people my age will like, but I want to hear how you would set it up.

• 1:21:06Speaker 02

It takes place in a fancy, fancy retirement community.

• 1:21:09Dax Shepard?

I want to live there. It like, looks very appealing.

• 1:21:11Speaker 02

That's been my dream life. I want to live in a camp.

• 1:21:14Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:21:15Speaker 02

  But for adults.

• 1:21:15Dax Shepard?

  Golf cart, shuffleboard.

• 1:21:17Speaker 02

Right. They say, well, now we're gonna go canoe. Oh, okay. Now we're gonna take a field trip.

• 1:21:21Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:21:22Dax Shepard?

  Now it's lunch.

• 1:21:23Speaker 02

Yes, now it's lunch. And I don't have to decide anything.

• 1:21:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:21:26Speaker 02

I don't know. That's what I want. So, uh, retirement community. And it focuses on a, a group of friends that live all in the same cul-de-sac. And then something spooky and dangerous starts happening.

• 1:21:37Dax Shepard?

Allah Stranger Things. It's Duffer Brothers. So there's like some, I don't know. There's a creature. Is he an alien? Is he a weird animal?

• 1:21:44Speaker 01

Is he a monster from your childhood?

• 1:21:46Speaker 02

  Monster. Ooh, right?

• 1:21:49Dax Shepard?

What I like about it, and I hope you take this as a compliment, because I fucking love this movie and it speaks to how much it transcended that I would have watched this movie at 10 and loved it. But Cocoon is still one of my favorite movies ever. Do you remember Cocoon?

• 1:22:03Speaker 02

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:22:03Dax Shepard?

There are these, did you ever see Cocoon, Monica? There are these alien pods, these little cocooning aliens are in a swimming pool and it's giving them magic powers and they all get very youthful. Now, what's incredible is have you ever seen the Instagram post that says all of their ages from that movie?

• 1:22:19Speaker 02

No, they weren't really that old.

• 1:22:21Dax Shepard?

Brimley was like 52 years old.

• 1:22:23Speaker 02

  Oh, my God.

• 1:22:24Dax Shepard?

All the ca- I don't think anyone in the cast is over 60. Maybe Alan Arkin or something, but nobody's even over 60. And we watch that movie like, oh, look, these grandpas have superpowers.

• 1:22:33Speaker 01

  Isn't that crazy?

• 1:22:34Speaker 02

  That's crazy.

• 1:22:36Dax Shepard?

It is. Same with Golden Girls.

• 1:22:38Speaker 01

  Yeah, Golden Girls.

• 1:22:39Dax Shepard?

  They were all young.

• 1:22:40Speaker 02

Stel Geddes was like, almost the same age as her daughter.

• 1:22:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah. At least it was like in their 40s on that show.

• 1:22:47Speaker 01

  Yeah, it's wild.

• 1:22:47Dax Shepard?

  Playing her retired grandma.

• 1:22:49Speaker 02

Did they think people just couldn't stand to actually watch old people?

• 1:22:53Speaker 01

It's such a different time that maybe looked at age.

• 1:22:55Dax Shepard?

I've had this moment. Several times where it's like, I get offered a role and the character has an 18 year old or a 24 year old. And I'm like, yeah, that's correct chronologically. I just think this job has a very weird ability to remind you in a very cruel way of how old you are all the time. It's like you're getting the thing. It's like, oh, I'm someone with a terminal disease. That's who I'm playing. That's where we're at. So did you have any like shock of like, yeah, it makes sense that I would be in a show about this?

• 1:23:29Speaker 02

Yes, I was like that, but like you, I mean, I turned down any number of roles because the character had adult children or

• 1:23:39Dax Shepard?

  grandma.

• 1:23:40Speaker 02

And I was like, at no time on earth did I go to play a grandma. But no, I was very, whatever age I was, but I was, I don't even want teenage kids.

• 1:23:49Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:23:50Speaker 02

  But this made sense.

• 1:23:52Dax Shepard?

I've been on a couple of shows where the older cast members are gonna have to die, right? Like I was on this great show Parenthood and Craig T. Nelson, who's just a blessing.

• 1:24:01Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:24:01Dax Shepard?

He's gonna play someone's dying. I mean, vaguely of old age, you know, like just thing, a heart thing, but still. And I just remember talking to him and being like, is this tricky dude? Like, I think it would be tricky for me to go like, wait, this makes sense to everybody that I'd be playing someone that might drop dead right now. Like, is this a lot, I think, to contend with?

• 1:24:21Speaker 02

Exactly. Well, the good thing, I think something I really like about this show is we're all very able. We can battle dangerous things and there's no beats about how, oh, we can't even get up there.

• 1:24:34Speaker 01

  Right.

• 1:24:35Dax Shepard?

No, but there is a scene where you're all showing off your scars.

• 1:24:39Speaker 02

  That's true.

• 1:24:39Dax Shepard?

And everyone's had a massive operation, right? Someone's had their whole front cut open, someone's had their back cut open. You've had your hip replaced.

• 1:24:46Speaker 02

  That's right.

• 1:24:47Dax Shepard?

First, I just love the show. It's so good. Your character's so fun. You're kind of the vixen of the scene. You're a ex-music manager. So you're like hip and cool and you drive a cool Fairlane convertible and you're awesome. You're a rock star. But I was like, we are still a little bit caught in the notion, like you wouldn't be in a retirement community. In reality, they need to be 15 years older. Everything's changed. When I was young, all seven year olds were in retirement communities. That's not how it is now.

• 1:25:15Speaker 02

It's not how it is now. And my character is the only one who didn't plan to go there. My mom bought that house and I had to take care of her and I also lost all my money. And then I just ended up staying. But a few times I refer to the fact that I don't really belong here.

• 1:25:32Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Yeah. Had you worked with Alfred Molina or Bill Pullman before?

• 1:25:39Speaker 02

This is my third thing with Bill Pullman. My third project with Ed Begley Jr.

• 1:25:44Dax Shepard?

Oh. I've done three with him as well.

• 1:25:46Speaker 02

  Really?

• 1:25:46Dax Shepard?

  What a sweetheart.

• 1:25:47Speaker 02

Isn't he the sweetest? Oh, I love it.

• 1:25:50Dax Shepard?

It scares me how sweet he is.

• 1:25:51Speaker 02

But also Bill Pullman is like that. He's so sweet and wonderful.

• 1:25:55Dax Shepard?

  I've never met him.

• 1:25:56Speaker 02

  Yeah. Oh, God.

• 1:25:57Dax Shepard?

It's so weird to say this, but he's weirdly a revelation in this show.

• 1:26:00Speaker 02

  Right?

• 1:26:01Dax Shepard?

He is, even though I've seen him a million times. I'm like, this is great. He's like a fucking beach stoner, retired dude. He's so chill.

• 1:26:10Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:26:10Dax Shepard?

  He's incredible.

• 1:26:11Speaker 02

It makes you go, oh, no wonder they got him.

• 1:26:14Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, yeah. This is great. This sounds like it's doing like anti-ageism work. Yeah, you have a very young lover.

• 1:26:22Speaker 02

  He's 40. Yeah, he's 30 years younger than me.

• 1:26:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:26:26Speaker 02

  Yeah.

• 1:26:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. Fun. So.

• 1:26:28Speaker 02

  But Renee's like, so what?

• 1:26:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's great. She's feeling very confident and so is he and everyone's winning. But I will say I was watching it with my wife and our 13 year old and 11 year old daughters last night. And I love these situations, right? Like I'm feeling a certain way and I'm like, I'm gonna bring this up to everyone. And I said during that scene, we were watching the sexy scene with you guys. And I said, isn't it crazy, you guys, that we have seen at this point a thousand movies where the age gap was this, but it was the guy and the woman? And you don't notice, but this is highly noticeable.

• 1:27:08Speaker 02

  Yes.

• 1:27:08Dax Shepard?

And isn't that really something? Like, let's just talk about that for a minute.

• 1:27:12Speaker 02

  It really is.

• 1:27:13Dax Shepard?

You wouldn't think about Michael Douglas is in something and he's got a 40 year old. You know, you just.

• 1:27:19Speaker 02

Yeah, it happens all the time in films.

• 1:27:23Dax Shepard?

You don't even notice, but this is very noticeable.

• 1:27:26Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:27:27Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. Because we're not.

• 1:27:27Speaker 02

  I used to it.

• 1:27:28Dax Shepard?

  Exactly.

• 1:27:29Speaker 02

That's why it's noticeable. Yeah. Yeah.

• 1:27:30Dax Shepard?

It's just a juicy thing for you to get to talk about with your kids. It's an opportunity.

• 1:27:36Speaker 02

  Right, right.

• 1:27:36Dax Shepard?

To hear what these young girls think about that. Like, oh, wow, why are we seeing this for the first time?

• 1:27:41Speaker 02

Yeah, that's so cool you brought that up.

• 1:27:43Dax Shepard?

I really dig that. We're watching something from the seventies or eighties and something gnarly happens. You know, it just doesn't happen that way anymore. Like the way guys are talking to women or something. And we're just pausing and be like, well, what do you guys think of this?

• 1:27:56Speaker 02

  Oh, that's so cool.

• 1:27:57Dax Shepard?

That was kind of standard biz. In the eighties, that was like standard. Guys would just say shit like that to women and, you know, what do we, what do we think about this?

• 1:28:05Speaker 02

I was figuring to watch it with your kids. When my kids were little, I watched everything with them because I felt like I could be their media interpreter. I would say, why do you think she's wearing that if she's gonna go rescue somebody? Doesn't that seem like it's not appropriate? Or did you notice? Do you think girls could do what all those boys are doing? And why didn't you think there's more? So it got to the point where, and even if we're out of the movie, if I just went like this, I go, I know, mom, there are not enough girls in that scene. I know, I know.

• 1:28:31Dax Shepard?

  We know, we know.

• 1:28:32Speaker 02

  I'm aware.

• 1:28:33Dax Shepard?

It's so great. That's the best part, though. Kids are supposed to fuck with their moms. My wife's constantly talking about what neurologist she just saw on Instagram and what new hack we have. And soon as my wife starts talking, either girl's like, is this one of your neurologists from Instagram? Or did you actually? Yeah. And they're like 11 and 13. They've already got it dialed, you know?

• 1:28:53Speaker 02

  That's hilarious.

• 1:28:55Dax Shepard?

Okay, the last thing I want to talk about is you just kind of went viral. Second weekend of Coachella, you were a guest at the Sabrina Carpenter show.

• 1:29:05Speaker 02

Yeah, not just a guest. I was on stage.

• 1:29:08Dax Shepard?

Oh, yes. I guess guest means you were in attendance. No, you were on stage.

• 1:29:12Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:29:12Dax Shepard?

In a convertible Cadillac or something like that. Very much Thelma and Louise-esque. And Susan had done it the weekend before.

• 1:29:19Speaker 02

Oh, fun. I had no idea when she did that, I thought, oh, that's cool. I had no idea they were then gonna ask me to do it. But that was wild.

• 1:29:28Dax Shepard?

Who calls you? Does Sabrina Carpenter herself call you?

• 1:29:31Speaker 02

No, I mean, they called my agent, or people did, I guess. But she was the one that wanted me to do it. That's awesome.

• 1:29:37Dax Shepard?

What do you think of her? I love her.

• 1:29:39Speaker 02

Oh, I love her so much. And she was so wonderful in person and so charming and gave me a T-shirt. I guess the title of her show was Sabrina Wood. And so she gave one that said Gina Wood. Oh, cute. Cute. I loved it. It was so fun. But I didn't expect it to blow up like that. Somebody said you were trying to get a line. What?

• 1:30:00Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you never know what's coming.

• 1:30:03Speaker 02

  You never do.

• 1:30:04Dax Shepard?

I have so much gratitude for her, for Taylor Swift. I've taken our daughters to both of those performers.

• 1:30:10Speaker 02

  Wow, that's great.

• 1:30:11Dax Shepard?

For them to be little girls watching these women who have created a true matriarchy. They have their own world and they are the top of that world. They don't have to suffer any fools. They're in charge. There weren't a lot of examples like that, and now there's a ton.

• 1:30:28Speaker 02

  It's true. It's true.

• 1:30:30Dax Shepard?

  It's pretty rad.

• 1:30:31Speaker 02

  Yeah, it is.

• 1:30:32Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'm delighted that that happened. Had you ever been to Coachella?

• 1:30:35Speaker 02

  No.

• 1:30:36Dax Shepard?

Yeah, me neither. I think that's the way I want to go the first time. I want to be on stage.

• 1:30:39Speaker 02

  Right.

• 1:30:40Dax Shepard?

The biggest, the most loved performance of the night.

• 1:30:44Speaker 02

  Exactly.

• 1:30:45Dax Shepard?

Okay, and then lastly, where are you at? Are you still susceptible to if a guy likes you? Or have we evolved in that? If a guy just simply likes you, is that enough anymore?

• 1:30:54Speaker 02

No, that wouldn't be enough. Good, you said that.

• 1:30:57Dax Shepard?

And what did you learn when that shifted? Do you start thinking, wait, what do I like? Is that what it was?

• 1:31:03Speaker 02

Right. I had been attracted to extroverted, flashy, shiny men.

• 1:31:10Dax Shepard?

And now not so much anymore.

• 1:31:12Speaker 02

  Not so much.

• 1:31:12Dax Shepard?

So Brad Pitt doesn't have a chance now.

• 1:31:15Speaker 02

Well, he is. Actually, well, it was. We'll make an exception. I can make an exception.

• 1:31:20Dax Shepard?

Let's not exclude him from the pool of bachelors we consider. Oh, well, Gina, I adore you for real. Sincerely, Long Kiss Goodnight. It was one of the first films I think I owned on Blu-ray that I watched over and over again. I just love it. I'm so in the mood to watch it again. I can't wait to show my daughters. It's an honor to meet you.

• 1:31:38Speaker 02

  Thank you.

• 1:31:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I'm really excited.

• 1:31:39Speaker 02

I just wanted to tell you one thing about Long Kiss Goodnight. Sam and I, well, we changed the ending when we were shooting because we realized we'd love to do a sequel. And in the original script, Sam's character dies. So we reshoot the last scene and made him live. And I know it's all these years later, but we still, Sam and I, talk about we're dying to do a sequel.

• 1:32:04Dax Shepard?

  Oh, I would love.

• 1:32:05Speaker 01

  You should.

• 1:32:06Speaker 02

Well, I know, but we gotta get somebody to do it.

• 1:32:09Dax Shepard?

  I nominate Netflix.

• 1:32:11Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:32:12Dax Shepard?

If you're there, you're crushing. They wanna be in the Gina business now.

• 1:32:16Speaker 01

  Gina would.

• 1:32:17Dax Shepard?

  Let's get, yeah, Gina would.

• 1:32:19Speaker 02

Would Gina do a sequel? Yeah, Gina would.

• 1:32:21Dax Shepard?

Gina is open to a sequel. All right, well, lovely meeting you. Thanks for the work you've done on the gender parity with good shows and hopefully that moves upstream all the way. And everyone, watch The Borough. Thanks so much, Gina.

• 1:32:35Speaker 02

Thank you. This is really fun. Thank you. Yeah.

• 1:32:40Dax Shepard?

Just a quick reminder that as part of our summer break, here's a rerun of one of our favorite fact checks.

• 1:32:51Speaker 01

I got my haircut today. Barb did my hair.

• 1:32:54Dax Shepard?

Where'd you find Barb? Barb Chopstick? What'd you say?

• 1:32:57Speaker 01

  Don't ever say that again.

• 1:32:59Dax Shepard?

  What did you say?

• 1:33:00Speaker 01

  Barb Thompson.

• 1:33:02Dax Shepard?

  Thompson, okay.

• 1:33:03Speaker 01

She's awesome. And she's done my hair before. She did it for a gala.

• 1:33:08Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:33:08Speaker 01

One of the only gals I've ever been to. And she's, she's great.

• 1:33:14Dax Shepard?

Always a bridesmaid, never a gala.

• 1:33:17Speaker 01

I know. And she said you did a great job.

• 1:33:20Dax Shepard?

Are you growing your hair out on your legs too?

• 1:33:22Speaker 01

  Don't look. I just haven't shaved. Fuck.

• 1:33:25Dax Shepard?

But I didn't know if you were making a decision like everyone's making. That was a fair question. What happened?

• 1:33:32Speaker 01

I can't believe you did that. I was.

• 1:33:34Dax Shepard?

Well, I wanted to celebrate you if you were embracing.

• 1:33:37Speaker 01

  Fuck that. No.

• 1:33:38Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:33:39Speaker 01

I take care of my hair. I just haven't and it's hot out.

• 1:33:44Dax Shepard?

Yeah, that's great. I, you, can you understand there's a movement where, where women aren't shaving anymore? And I thought maybe you'd join that movement.

• 1:33:51Speaker 01

  I was really actually self-conscious.

• 1:33:52Dax Shepard?

Oh, and I mean, it was.

• 1:33:54Speaker 01

Notice. And I was like, there's no way that anyone will notice. And you noticed immediately.

• 1:33:58Dax Shepard?

I'm very observant. You know this about me.

• 1:34:00Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:34:00Dax Shepard?

  I don't miss a thing.

• 1:34:01Speaker 01

It just takes a long time to shave.

• 1:34:04Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I shave my arms now. I have all this money tied up in these tattoos and I want them to be visible.

• 1:34:11Speaker 01

That makes sense. Well, you know, I also, I have to grow my arm. My legs, my armpits, my vagina parts.

• 1:34:18Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and I feel terrible for you. I've said that now that I'm now that I'm grooming a lot.

• 1:34:24Speaker 01

Yeah, it sucks. Speaking of, how's the cashmere? We haven't even seen it in a while.

• 1:34:28Dax Shepard?

You know, who's the real producers? Delta.

• 1:34:31Speaker 01

  Yeah. Are you collecting?

• 1:34:33Dax Shepard?

Yeah, yeah, it's growing. Although I may have a big, I might have a, um, I'm now thinking I might have a nice deposit in the drawer in my bathroom. I think maybe I haven't transferred some to the

• 1:34:45Speaker 01

  Okay, great.

• 1:34:46Dax Shepard?

  The main storage.

• 1:34:48Speaker 01

  Okay, great.

• 1:34:50Dax Shepard?

Okay, I had been wanting to tell you a story.

• 1:34:52Speaker 01

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:34:53Dax Shepard?

Okay, so we all went to Monster Jam on Saturday.

• 1:34:56Speaker 01

  Yeah, who's, describe we all.

• 1:34:58Dax Shepard?

Okay, so we all is Charlie and the boys, Ace and Wilder, the two handsomest men in Los Angeles. And then my girls, Lincoln and Delta, and then Delta's friend.

• 1:35:09Speaker 01

  Fun.

• 1:35:10Dax Shepard?

Yeah, and then Eric. Eric, yeah, that's all. So we went, it was immediately fun. It's so fun. Monster Jam's so fun. We got to ride in the like 12 passenger monster truck. That's great. I was kind of not clocking any of this, but apparently, um, Delta and her friend had brought their two most important stuffies in a red bag. I didn't know that. I probably would have been like, maybe we don't bring them into the event.

• 1:35:42Speaker 01

  Can you describe the stuff?

• 1:35:43Dax Shepard?

Yes, it's imperative that people understand the stakes here. So, anyone that knows Delta would know her son Groot.

• 1:35:51Speaker 01

Oh, my God. I don't even count Groot as a stuffy. When you said that, I wasn't thinking of him. He's a real boy.

• 1:35:58Dax Shepard?

  He really is.

• 1:35:59Speaker 01

  The robot.

• 1:36:00Dax Shepard?

I don't know that I've ever seen, and I had very deep relationships with my stuffies. I had three bears that I loved and I thought about them. And if I was gone too long, I felt guilty. Like, I was very in touch and close with my stuffies.

• 1:36:13Speaker 01

  What were their names?

• 1:36:14Dax Shepard?

I don't, I didn't name them. Just one was a polar bear, one was a brown bear, and one was like a

• 1:36:21Speaker 01

  And?

• 1:36:22Dax Shepard?

Koala bear. They were different breeds, so I didn't, breeds, the species.

• 1:36:27Speaker 01

So you just said koala, polar.

• 1:36:29Dax Shepard?

  I just never was like

• 1:36:30Speaker 01

  You never called them?

• 1:36:31Dax Shepard?

Addressing them. I was just squeezing them and feeling guilty.

• 1:36:33Speaker 01

But what if like it was downstairs and you had to tell your mom like? Oh my God, Polar is missing.

• 1:36:39Dax Shepard?

  That never like.

• 1:36:40Speaker 01

  It would never happen.

• 1:36:41Dax Shepard?

  I, I would never.

• 1:36:42Speaker 01

  Lose track.

• 1:36:43Dax Shepard?

  Never.

• 1:36:44Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:36:44Dax Shepard?

And they didn't travel out of my room either.

• 1:36:46Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:36:46Dax Shepard?

Because I was too afraid something would happen to them in the wild. Okay, but to put like this in perspective, Groot goes everywhere with us.

• 1:36:54Speaker 01

  Mm hmm.

• 1:36:55Dax Shepard?

Groot has truly a bigger wardrobe than Delta.

• 1:36:59Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:36:59Dax Shepard?

He has many different jammies. He has swimwear. He has like.

• 1:37:03Speaker 01

Delta's birthday shall often ask for clothes for Groot.

• 1:37:06Dax Shepard?

That mostly that's all she asks for is things for Groot. And he has books he reads and he's an artist and she makes him dinner and he like.

• 1:37:14Speaker 01

  Close.

• 1:37:16Dax Shepard?

It's such a huge part of her life.

• 1:37:17Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:37:18Dax Shepard?

And then I didn't know this. I learned this recently about Groot. She was kind of explaining what was going on with him athletically. And then I said, is Groot disabled?

• 1:37:29Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:37:29Dax Shepard?

And she said, yeah, Groot is disabled. And I said, oh, what's his disability? And she said, well, he's half tree and half boy. So he needs to breathe carbon dioxide as a tree, but he needs to breathe oxygen as a boy. So his lungs are like half dedicated to breathing. And so that's kind of an impairment for his cardiovascular.

• 1:37:53Speaker 01

  Stop.

• 1:37:53Dax Shepard?

  Additionally.

• 1:37:54Speaker 01

  Stop.

• 1:37:55Dax Shepard?

This is all real. Like, I didn't even know Groot was disabled.

• 1:37:58Speaker 01

  Well, I'd be.

• 1:37:58Dax Shepard?

But I just had a hunch. There was some way she was talking about his athleticism and his outfit.

• 1:38:04Speaker 01

  Sure.

• 1:38:05Dax Shepard?

I don't know. I asked and he, and he is. And then she went on to tell me another challenge he has is, is he's got both veins.

• 1:38:14Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 1:38:15Dax Shepard?

And then he also has to have plumbing for the water.

• 1:38:20Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:38:20Dax Shepard?

So it's like his body's sharing a lot of.

• 1:38:22Speaker 01

  Wow, double duty.

• 1:38:24Dax Shepard?

Double duty. Also, his bark hasn't come in and that's going to make him more stable.

• 1:38:28Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 1:38:30Dax Shepard?

Yes, it was a lot going on.

• 1:38:31Speaker 01

  Okay, wow.

• 1:38:33Dax Shepard?

And I'm going to be honest, I love Groot. Like, he's also my grandson. And when we snuggle at night, I go, I want a little time with Groot. So he has to be in my.

• 1:38:42Speaker 01

  Does everyone have to leave?

• 1:38:44Dax Shepard?

No, no, no, no, just I will want Groot in my left nook and Delta in my right nook. If we're all laying together, but she's gotta give me some.

• 1:38:53Speaker 01

  Okay, nevermind.

• 1:38:54Dax Shepard?

  Anyone? Oh.

• 1:38:56Speaker 01

Nevermind, I don't want to say.

• 1:38:57Dax Shepard?

Okay, good. I'm afraid I know.

• 1:38:59Speaker 01

It's because you like him in your nook and like, like a kid, like a kid.

• 1:39:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, like a little baby boy. So, uh, okay. So great time. We're having the best time. Now we're up in the, this huge suite. There's like 50 people in there. It's a blast. It's hectic. And Delta comes up like mid show. Again, I'm going to say, I've said it before, there's no better show on earth than Monster Jam. It starts and it doesn't let up. Race, race, race, race, race, stun, stun, stuns. So it's a party. We're eating food and then Delta comes up to me and she is, um, she's passed. Uh, like she's, I don't want to say she's hyperventilating. She is so scared and panicked.

• 1:39:45Dax Shepard?

And she said, we don't, we lost Groot. And I'm like, what do you mean? I didn't even know Groot was in here. We lost the bag. So her friend was in charge of carrying the bag. She brought it in here. Someone maybe stole it or whatever. And I'm like, okay, no one stole it. Everyone that came is still here. No one left mid time, you know? So now we start scouring all the bathrooms in there and then we go through systematically and we look under every single chair. This takes 35, 40 minutes. I'm missing the Monster Jam.

• 1:40:12Speaker 01

Sure. You can hear it still.

• 1:40:14Dax Shepard?

I can hear it. That is helpful. And, um, I say at some point, okay. It's not in here, which means it didn't, it didn't come up here.

• 1:40:25Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:40:25Dax Shepard?

Now we arrived and we went right out onto the, to the arena floor to take that ride. So it's like, we're seven stories up. That was pre-show. I don't, so now Charlie and I.

• 1:40:37Speaker 01

Take him into the monster truck?

• 1:40:39Dax Shepard?

Yeah. So, well, here becomes the investigation. So then Charlie and I, I'm like, oh, I made a video of them get, I'm like, did they even bring the bag out of the car?

• 1:40:46Speaker 01

  Right. Let's hope not.

• 1:40:47Dax Shepard?

  I took pictures.

• 1:40:48Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:40:49Dax Shepard?

I take some, oh yeah, there's the red bag. Then I have footage of them getting on. On to the monster truck and she's carrying the bag. We don't have footage of them getting off, but I'm like, but this is, she would have never set it down in the elevator or on the walk. It definitely had to get left in the truck. So now, exactly, and we're now mid show. This is hours later and I.

• 1:41:12Speaker 01

And is that truck like out on the thing?

• 1:41:15Dax Shepard?

No, that truck has now been already put in a trailer to go to the next monster jam. So I like, I asked my friend Sally, who I've been.

• 1:41:28Dax Shepard?

You know, going to monster jam with Sally as our host for, I don't know, eight years now.

• 1:41:33Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:41:34Dax Shepard?

She's an incredible lady. She's an armcherry.

• 1:41:37Speaker 01

  Oh, shout out.

• 1:41:38Dax Shepard?

So sweet. And I'm like, I don't know what else to do, but like, here's the situation. She's a mom. She put out a full court press. Oh, look, okay, I'll try to get into that truck. Like, I'll try to find the truck in the parking lot and try to get into the semi to get into this monster. So like an hour goes by and Delta's really like, she lost her son.

• 1:42:02Speaker 01

  Oh, my God.

• 1:42:02Dax Shepard?

And I'm, I'm very pessimistic. I'm like, who knows? They set that bag down anyway. There were so many bags and so many things and so much equipment. It's in an arena. So I was really, really pessimistic. And then the show ends and then we just sit there for another 45 minutes while the whole place clears out. We're kind of like waiting to see if they're gonna find group. And then she says, well, you guys are free to, if you want to just wait in the car. So anyways, we go sit in the car now and then I get a text from Sally. It's a picture of her and she's a lady and she's holding the bag. She found the bag in a random golf cart somewhere.

• 1:42:42Speaker 01

  No.

• 1:42:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah. It was.

• 1:42:44Speaker 01

On its way to the trash.

• 1:42:46Dax Shepard?

On its way to a sex trafficking.

• 1:42:50Speaker 01

Don't say that. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. What a tale.

• 1:42:55Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God. It was the amount of relief I felt.

• 1:42:59Speaker 01

  So obsessed, scary.

• 1:43:00Dax Shepard?

When that bag returned, you know, I was starting to think about what our next two weeks to a month. Like, I was like, this is gonna be.

• 1:43:08Speaker 01

Imagine when it's like to lose. Your son, you never get over it.

• 1:43:11Dax Shepard?

Yeah, it's gonna be devastating in a way that I'm not sure how we're all gonna deal with. We lost Groot forever.

• 1:43:18Speaker 01

  That is so scary.

• 1:43:21Dax Shepard?

Once we had Groot, I was like, you know, I started thinking like, what do I do? Would you have wanted me to find the same Groot? And she's like, no.

• 1:43:31Dax Shepard?

Yeah, cuz it's real and he's real and there's no replacing him.

• 1:43:34Speaker 01

Well, and so she answered our long lasting question about would you clone?

• 1:43:40Dax Shepard?

Would you clone your dog or your kid?

• 1:43:42Speaker 01

  She won't.

• 1:43:43Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I guess she has.

• 1:43:44Speaker 01

  She's like me.

• 1:43:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, she is. I guess she has ethics. I don't know.

• 1:43:49Speaker 01

  We don't know.

• 1:43:49Dax Shepard?

We don't know what that means ethically.

• 1:43:51Speaker 01

Oh, gosh, that's why. But, okay, if he had gone in the monster truck and then got sent to the next monster truck show, that's a kid's book. That's a children's book.

• 1:44:02Dax Shepard?

And like, they love him and he becomes kind of a mascot for Monster Jam.

• 1:44:06Speaker 01

But then he returns back home always.

• 1:44:08Dax Shepard?

But he's like, now he chooses to backhoe and he's grown up a little bit.

• 1:44:12Speaker 01

We have different versions of this story.

• 1:44:14Dax Shepard?

Well, he's on the Monster Jam tour.

• 1:44:16Speaker 01

Yeah, he is. He's on the tour.

• 1:44:17Dax Shepard?

He's not going to like symposiums on physics.

• 1:44:20Speaker 01

But he's very, it's very Toy Story.

• 1:44:24Dax Shepard?

Yes, yes. He could have been on a real adventure.

• 1:44:26Speaker 01

I don't think that all the dust from the monster truck would be good for his lungs.

• 1:44:32Dax Shepard?

Well, not given what I've learned about his. Yeah. Now, what if like the driver of Gravedigger found him and started keeping him on the dash?

• 1:44:40Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:44:41Dax Shepard?

And we could like, then we were watching and he was riding on the dash proudly.

• 1:44:47Speaker 01

  Oh, my God, that's terrifying.

• 1:44:49Dax Shepard?

Oh, it was really an event. Yeah. So I missed a good half of Monster Jam. Both looking for and then panicking over.

• 1:44:57Speaker 01

  Sally, really hero.

• 1:44:59Dax Shepard?

Oh, my God, the hero of all heroes.

• 1:45:02Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:45:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I mean, if you were to ask me at some point what I would pay for his safe return, it would have been embarrassing.

• 1:45:09Speaker 01

I know, but that's, that's life. It's like, you can't, you can't buy health. Well, actually, I mean, to an extent you can, which is a problem, but, you know.

• 1:45:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:19Speaker 01

That's why health is the most important thing we have.

• 1:45:21Dax Shepard?

And just being there, I guess.

• 1:45:23Speaker 01

  Being alive.

• 1:45:24Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:24Speaker 01

Yeah, being there, being present. Um, well, I'm also grateful because I immediately got codependent for the girl.

• 1:45:33Speaker 01

  The friend, can you imagine?

• 1:45:35Dax Shepard?

No, I know. So that was all happening. She now feels so guilty and she's crying. Delta's crying inconsolably.

• 1:45:43Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:45:44Dax Shepard?

Her friend's crying and I'm like the dad watching. And so I kept going, oh, sweetie, it's totally okay. Delta should have been carrying her own bag.

• 1:45:54Speaker 01

  Oh, that's nice.

• 1:45:55Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I was like trying to comfort her and trying to comfort Delta. Her group is in there too.

• 1:46:01Speaker 01

  Oh, it is?

• 1:46:02Dax Shepard?

She's got the double whammy. She's lost her stuffy and she lost Delta's stuffy.

• 1:46:07Speaker 01

  Who was her stuffy?

• 1:46:09Dax Shepard?

Um, I didn't get a good gander at it once they were all reunited. I didn't even know we were bringing stuffies to Monster Jam.

• 1:46:15Speaker 01

  Not anymore.

• 1:46:16Dax Shepard?

I hope not. And then, okay, now this is the thing that we go back to. We've been talking about this the last few episodes.

• 1:46:23Dax Shepard?

I'm like, and I'm talking to Charlie and Eric. I'm like, you know, all I gotta do is keep trying to find group and not say, this is why we don't bring, what you want to say as a parent is this is why we don't bring stuffies to sporting events.

• 1:46:38Speaker 01

  Yep.

• 1:46:38Dax Shepard?

And I was like, she has learned that lesson. She, I don't need to tell her that. She is in major discomfort.

• 1:46:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:46:46Dax Shepard?

And so I let it go. But then I, on the way home, I was just saying how grateful I was that he's back.

• 1:46:53Speaker 01

Slipping it in a little bit?

• 1:46:55Dax Shepard?

A little bit. And then, and then I said, he's just so valuable. We gotta make sure that we're safe when we bring him places. She goes, but he can't just be a, a boy that lives at home and doesn't go and do things. He can't, I can't just be protecting him from it. And I'm like, I know that's a great point, but there's a ton of things we can take him to. So he's not stuck in the house, but that are also maybe not so distracting as Monster Jam.

• 1:47:19Speaker 01

This is complex because this is how you feel about your kids. This is how you parent them. You're like, you know, they're, I'm going to let them go explore the world. And another person could say, look, they're a little too valuable for that. Don't let them just go down the street to Ralph's.

• 1:47:36Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:47:37Speaker 01

  Where there's crazies.

• 1:47:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:39Speaker 01

Um, so it looks like she's.

• 1:47:42Dax Shepard?

  She's inherited my parenting.

• 1:47:43Speaker 01

  Looks like it's nurtured.

• 1:47:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, in this case.

• 1:47:46Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 1:47:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:48Speaker 01

I'm grateful. I'm so grateful. I would have been really.

• 1:47:50Dax Shepard?

  You understand.

• 1:47:51Speaker 01

Yeah, I would have been so sad if group. I mean, I would have been happy for him if he was on an adventure, but we, we know that really he would have gone in the trash.

• 1:48:00Dax Shepard?

  Well, he's, he's so cute.

• 1:48:02Speaker 01

Dex, missing persons after like 48 hours, they're dead.

• 1:48:07Dax Shepard?

Okay, so you think he might someone murder him?

• 1:48:09Speaker 01

  Trash.

• 1:48:11Dax Shepard?

I just can't imagine holding that little guy. He's so sweet looking.

• 1:48:15Speaker 01

  Oh, I know.

• 1:48:15Dax Shepard?

I told her that's why I didn't know he had a disability because he's so smiley. I have no idea he's suffering from anything. He's in a perpetually great mood.

• 1:48:23Speaker 01

  Well, that's the thing.

• 1:48:24Dax Shepard?

He's got the best attitude. It sounded like there's some pain accompanying these.

• 1:48:29Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 1:48:29Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:31Speaker 01

Trick her into getting like pain meds for him.

• 1:48:34Dax Shepard?

I might see if we can get some nerve blockers.

• 1:48:38Speaker 01

Oh, my God. Wow, that isn't quite an adventure. I'm.

• 1:48:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:48:43Speaker 01

I'm really glad that had a happy ending.

• 1:48:45Dax Shepard?

Oh, me too. Anything fun happen to you?

• 1:48:47Speaker 01

Yeah. Okay, so you've been gone a couple of days. In the meantime, I've watched two full seasons of You, the show You, which reminds me, I want to play the thing.

• 1:48:59Dax Shepard?

  That's a show about me?

• 1:49:00Speaker 01

Exactly. It's about time that we revisit that because I'm watching it.

• 1:49:06Dax Shepard?

  Such a great exchange.

• 1:49:07Speaker 01

  Okay, let's.

• 1:49:08Dax Shepard?

  Laura Ingraham?

• 1:49:09Speaker 01

Yeah. You want me to put on the TV? Oh, yeah, you can. This is my favorite clip of all time. And now it has extra meaning because I'm watching the show.

• 1:49:18Dax Shepard?

  Is it a great show?

• 1:49:19Speaker 01

I love it. It has real Veronica Mars vibes.

• 1:49:22Dax Shepard?

  Oh, fun.

• 1:49:23Speaker 01

But it's, it's like Dexter meets Veronica Mars, but I've never seen Dexter. Okay, let's watch this real quick.

• 1:49:32Speaker 04

You know, I was watching an episode of You where measles came up. Wait, wait, wait, when did I mention measles?

• 1:49:41Speaker 04

I don't know. It was on you. Wait, what?

• 1:49:45Speaker 04

What was on me? What are you talking about?

• 1:49:50Speaker 04

I never had the measles. Was on you. We never did a, we never did a measles and vaccine episode. Am I, is this a joke? I know. It was on you. It was on you. I've never had, Raymond, I've never had measles. What are you talking about? Stupid. It was an episode of a show, Laura.

• 1:50:11Speaker 04

What's it called? You. You. Ha ha. You're doing a show on me? I just completely give up. We gotta go. It's so shy. I give up. Called You on Netflix. There's a show called Lauren. Ha ha. I'm moving on to Adele. I can't explain this, dude.

• 1:50:29Dax Shepard?

What was he talking about? So stupid.

• 1:50:32Speaker 01

  It's so funny.

• 1:50:35Dax Shepard?

  It's a real life.

• 1:50:35Speaker 01

There's a show called Lauren. It really is.

• 1:50:38Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:50:38Speaker 01

Oh, my God. Anyway, um, so I, yeah, I started You random. It like popped up as the next. This never works out.

• 1:50:48Dax Shepard?

  You're right, right. Auto recommend.

• 1:50:51Speaker 01

Play or whatever. And, um, I was like, sure, why not? Watch the whole thing. And then last night stayed up so late, I couldn't even look at the time. I was too afraid to look.

• 1:51:01Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow.

• 1:51:02Speaker 01

And watch all of season two.

• 1:51:04Dax Shepard?

  How many episodes in each?

• 1:51:05Speaker 01

  Ten.

• 1:51:06Dax Shepard?

  So you watched 20 episodes.

• 1:51:07Speaker 01

  They're like 45 ish minutes.

• 1:51:09Dax Shepard?

  Whoa.

• 1:51:09Speaker 01

Yes. Oh, my God. Okay, so it is Penn Badgley from Gossip Girl, who I loved back then, Dan Humphrey.

• 1:51:17Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 1:51:17Speaker 01

And he recently, he has a podcast, but also I saw, there's like an Instagram kind of viral video of him like dancing on one of these talk shows. And I was like.

• 1:51:28Dax Shepard?

  Well, or?

• 1:51:29Speaker 01

  Well.

• 1:51:29Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:51:29Speaker 01

  I, in my opinion.

• 1:51:31Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:51:31Speaker 01

And so I was like, oh, yeah, I love him.

• 1:51:33Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:51:34Speaker 01

  And then he pops up.

• 1:51:36Dax Shepard?

  Dancing is attractive.

• 1:51:37Speaker 01

I guess it, you know what? It is.

• 1:51:39Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:51:39Speaker 01

  I'm gonna, I'm gonna circle back. I didn't say it wasn't.

• 1:51:42Dax Shepard?

Right, right, right. You just didn't put it very high on the list.

• 1:51:45Speaker 01

Yeah, but turns out it's really high.

• 1:51:46Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:51:47Speaker 01

So, um, anyway, then it pops up and he is a, he's a stalker, like he's obsessed with this woman.

• 1:51:56Dax Shepard?

  Uh oh.

• 1:51:56Speaker 01

  There's like murder.

• 1:51:58Dax Shepard?

  Ooh.

• 1:51:59Speaker 01

  He's a psychopath, but it's a love story and he's hot. And it's, it's confu, it's confusing.

• 1:52:07Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 1:52:07Speaker 01

  It's sexy, but scary.

• 1:52:09Dax Shepard?

Yeah, very thin line for women there.

• 1:52:12Speaker 01

Well, I know, and I, I hated myself, of course.

• 1:52:15Dax Shepard?

  Sure.

• 1:52:15Speaker 01

I heard him, um, say on an interview, something like that, like, or someone asked, like, what do you think of when people say he's hot?

• 1:52:23Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:52:23Speaker 01

And he was like, he's a killer.

• 1:52:26Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:52:27Speaker 01

So I saw that clip before I watched the show and I was like, yeah, he's right. This is, people are crazy.

• 1:52:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:52:32Speaker 01

And then, of course, I'm like, he's hot.

• 1:52:35Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:52:36Speaker 01

He's also tricky because he's like kind of a good boyfriend if he wasn't a. Murder and putting people in cages.

• 1:52:42Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:52:43Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:52:44Dax Shepard?

Who, who, who just was everyone obsessed with that's also was a murderer? Wasn't there recently someone everyone thought was hot? Is it the United Health?

• 1:52:53Speaker 01

  Oh.

• 1:52:53Dax Shepard?

Assassin, were people like really horny for him? Luigi. Luigi.

• 1:52:58Speaker 01

That one, I, that's real life. So I find that much more complicated. I do not think.

• 1:53:04Dax Shepard?

  He don't think he's hot?

• 1:53:04Speaker 01

No, I don't think there's anything good about killing.

• 1:53:07Dax Shepard?

He was hot without the murder?

• 1:53:11Speaker 01

There's no way for me to know.

• 1:53:13Dax Shepard?

Yeah, you can't go back in time. He's got very powerful eyebrows.

• 1:53:17Speaker 01

I don't think murder is hot in real life and I don't think vigilantes are hot.

• 1:53:24Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 1:53:25Speaker 01

  I'm going to say that.

• 1:53:26Dax Shepard?

  Good to know.

• 1:53:26Speaker 01

I'm not, there's a lot of people that are like, good for him.

• 1:53:30Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:53:30Speaker 01

  And I, I disagree.

• 1:53:32Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:53:34Speaker 01

  I disagree wholly.

• 1:53:35Dax Shepard?

Yeah, I think that industry is evil and I don't think you're allowed to kill people.

• 1:53:38Speaker 01

Exactly, exactly. Yeah. Except in the show, sometimes he does kill some people I really don't like. And it is vigilante and like it's for kids. He's protect, sometimes he protects kids. He's weird. He's like kind of this like good friend and.

• 1:53:57Dax Shepard?

Hard to pin down. Mixed messages.

• 1:54:00Speaker 01

Really, really mixed messages. Anyway, I am loving it.

• 1:54:05Dax Shepard?

  Oh, wow. That's great.

• 1:54:06Speaker 01

  Five seasons.

• 1:54:07Dax Shepard?

Oh, there's five. Oh, so you're fucked for the whole week.

• 1:54:10Speaker 01

  I know.

• 1:54:11Dax Shepard?

So what time did you go to bed? Do you know?

• 1:54:13Speaker 01

I really don't know, but I was so tired when my alarm went off at nine.

• 1:54:17Dax Shepard?

  Okay, yeah.

• 1:54:18Speaker 01

And so I'm going to have to go back to bed. Probably three.

• 1:54:21Dax Shepard?

  Wow, you're nasty.

• 1:54:23Speaker 01

  I can't help myself.

• 1:54:24Dax Shepard?

  I know, you're indulgent.

• 1:54:25Speaker 01

And because I'm scared a little, like it's very cliffhanger. It's very good at keeping you on the hook. So I'm a little too scared in those scenarios to go to bed. Like, I need to know how it's completed. But they do a good job at the end of each season.

• 1:54:43Dax Shepard?

  You never know.

• 1:54:43Speaker 01

I did start episode three, but then I was like, Monica, no.

• 1:54:47Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, you got to stop.

• 1:54:48Speaker 01

I got to stop. So I turned it off about halfway through that. When I woke up this morning, after so much murder.

• 1:54:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:55Speaker 01

I was like, I think I need to take a break today.

• 1:54:59Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 1:55:00Speaker 01

Cause it really gets infiltrated. And then it made me think this is what's happening with boys and video games.

• 1:55:06Dax Shepard?

  Oh.

• 1:55:07Speaker 01

They're just, it's like a constant, they're living in this world that's dark and bleak. And they're shooting people and stuff. And then like reality starts to disappear.

• 1:55:18Dax Shepard?

Hmm. You're feeling that happen to you?

• 1:55:20Speaker 01

Well, I just could see it.

• 1:55:23Dax Shepard?

This is your OCD. Like this is, you think you're a, you're a killer or you think you're a pervert.

• 1:55:30Speaker 01

I don't, okay, in this show, it's a lot of voiceover. Cause you're, you're hearing his thoughts.

• 1:55:36Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 1:55:37Speaker 01

And so then today I was kind of hearing my thoughts like that.

• 1:55:41Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 1:55:42Speaker 01

And I thought I need to take a break.

• 1:55:44Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, take a little break.

• 1:55:46Speaker 01

No, but I also really want to know what happens. All right, let's see if there's anything else I want to talk about. You, you know, you're really tunnel vision.

• 1:55:57Speaker 01

It is easy. I get why. I get how it happens.

• 1:56:00Dax Shepard?

He's only so culpable. It was very confusing.

• 1:56:03Speaker 01

  But it was just.

• 1:56:04Dax Shepard?

And he didn't do a good job. Like he should have recognized what was going on much sooner. And said, it's a television show on Netflix and the title is you.

• 1:56:12Speaker 01

And the title is you, Y O U.

• 1:56:15Dax Shepard?

  Yes, and not Laura Ingraham.

• 1:56:17Speaker 01

He did end up saying, it's a show on Netflix called You. And she's still.

• 1:56:23Dax Shepard?

But he did, he did say, I was watching you about seven times before it's a show on Netflix.

• 1:56:29Speaker 01

It's so good. I almost feel like it's fake and I don't want to like look too into it.

• 1:56:34Dax Shepard?

  I don't think so.

• 1:56:34Speaker 01

  I don't either.

• 1:56:35Dax Shepard?

He's such a genuine reaction from her.

• 1:56:37Speaker 01

All right. Well, that's it. Let's move into facts.

• 1:56:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah, facts.

• 1:56:43Speaker 03

Stay tuned for more Armchair Expert if you dare.

• 1:58:17Speaker 01

  So facts for Nick Kroll.

• 1:58:20Dax Shepard?

When he said daddy's money, when he brought that, I keep thinking how funny that was when he said that. Do you remember that?

• 1:58:26Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 1:58:26Dax Shepard?

  I don't care, because I have daddy's money.

• 1:58:28Speaker 01

Yeah, that was so funny. Also, I wrote down specifically when he said sick little cutie. I laughed so hard at sick little cutie. I thought that was the funniest. It was just a sick little cutie.

• 1:58:45Dax Shepard?

Yeah, he was a mess. He was coughing and snorting, a little indigestion there for a minute. I fucking loved it.

• 1:58:51Speaker 01

  It was great.

• 1:58:54Speaker 01

And then I was kind of like, oh, sick little cutie is kind of like...

• 1:58:59Speaker 01

  My kink.

• 1:59:00Dax Shepard?

  That is your kink.

• 1:59:01Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:01Dax Shepard?

Sick little cutie. That could be your clothing line.

• 1:59:04Speaker 01

  Sick little cuties.

• 1:59:04Dax Shepard?

  Sick little cuties.

• 1:59:09Speaker 01

Anyway, that was just like, really made me laugh. He's so funny.

• 1:59:13Dax Shepard?

But it's more than that. He's got that thing some people have where he is just like infinitely comfortable in his own skin, which is so appealing.

• 1:59:22Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:23Dax Shepard?

It's such a comforting personality type.

• 1:59:25Speaker 01

  It is.

• 1:59:26Dax Shepard?

Yeah. The women came after me. Should I tell you that?

• 1:59:29Speaker 01

  What do you mean?

• 1:59:31Dax Shepard?

My, what I thought was an incredibly obvious joke about period underwear and tampons. Such a joke. Some women really came at me hard.

• 1:59:42Speaker 01

I think they also might, I don't know if they really think that or if they're like playing along.

• 1:59:47Dax Shepard?

They're playing your role, maybe. Yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. We really did uncover though, something with the X.

• 1:59:53Speaker 01

  Yeah, I know.

• 1:59:53Dax Shepard?

  Cause maxi pad.

• 1:59:55Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 1:59:55Dax Shepard?

  Tampons.

• 1:59:56Speaker 01

Maxi pad would have been the first.

• 1:59:59Dax Shepard?

  Probably.

• 2:00:00Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:00:01Dax Shepard?

  And then Nix and then.

• 2:00:03Speaker 01

  Thanks.

• 2:00:04Dax Shepard?

  What is it?

• 2:00:04Speaker 01

  Thanks. That's another brand of.

• 2:00:06Dax Shepard?

Spanx. They go on your, they cover your, okay.

• 2:00:11Speaker 01

Yeah, women. X because X chromosome.

• 2:00:15Dax Shepard?

Someone suggested that in the comments and I think that's brilliant and I don't think that's what it is, but that's a brilliant.

• 2:00:22Speaker 01

  How could you possibly know?

• 2:00:24Dax Shepard?

I'm just trying to imagine the tampons people going like, okay, let's call it, it's, it's a tampon, but let's, let's build on that and let's add X because of the chromosome. I just.

• 2:00:36Speaker 01

What's your, what's your, you know, idea?

• 2:00:40Dax Shepard?

That they wanted to imbue a sense of max, like max comfort, max absorption, max freshness, max. What was the word?

• 2:00:51Speaker 01

  Huh?

• 2:00:52Dax Shepard?

They had the word attached to Tampax in the ad we showed.

• 2:00:55Speaker 01

  Oh, radiant.

• 2:00:56Dax Shepard?

  Max radiance.

• 2:00:57Speaker 01

  But it's not, it's Tampax.

• 2:00:59Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:01:00Speaker 01

  Not Tam Max.

• 2:01:01Dax Shepard?

  Tam Paxum.

• 2:01:03Speaker 01

  I think it's X chromosome.

• 2:01:05Dax Shepard?

That's good. It's good. We'd have to track down whoever named.

• 2:01:09Speaker 01

Maxi pad. That's the original. I bet, I bet you can, you can do that and come back to us.

• 2:01:15Dax Shepard?

Are you, do you think they're alive?

• 2:01:18Speaker 01

Probably their kids are kids of kids.

• 2:01:20Dax Shepard?

Okay. Well, while you read a fact, I'm going to ask AI if the inventor of maxi pads is still alive.

• 2:01:26Speaker 01

  Okay, great.

• 2:01:26Dax Shepard?

Is the inventor of maxi pads still alive?

• 2:01:29Speaker 01

If people listen to the CTE episode with Chris Nowinski, and then also it came up in another episode, the P baby.

• 2:01:37Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:01:38Speaker 01

Um, we had AI make a video of us originally talking about the P baby, the original story of P baby.

• 2:01:48Dax Shepard?

  Oh, really?

• 2:01:49Speaker 01

Yeah. And I'm going to post it tomorrow. But so by the time you listen to this, it will be posted. And I really, really recommend people going to watch this. It'll be on our Instagram. Because for one, the story is just, you need a good reminder of the P baby. But the AI is hilarious.

• 2:02:09Dax Shepard?

Oh, I can't wait to see it.

• 2:02:11Speaker 01

It's like a version of you and me, like the AI made versions of us. It's so funny.

• 2:02:18Dax Shepard?

  Wait to see.

• 2:02:19Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:02:19Dax Shepard?

Were you holding this as a surprise for me?

• 2:02:21Speaker 01

No, I was just gonna. I'm doing stuff, you know?

• 2:02:25Dax Shepard?

  You got things to do.

• 2:02:26Speaker 01

Um, anyway, so check that out. Check out the P baby and the AI. It just reminded me, AI.

• 2:02:31Dax Shepard?

  Okay, great.

• 2:02:32Speaker 01

  Did it respond?

• 2:02:33Dax Shepard?

Well, it had to have. Mary Beatrice Davidson Kenner, an African American inventor, is renowned for her development of the adjustable sanitary belt, a precursor to the modern maxi pad. Okay, so they really went back. That was 1912.

• 2:02:47Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

She passed away in 06, so that's off the table. Kenner's invention patented in a, featured a moisture proof pocket designed to hold menstrual pads securely in place, the innovation. Okay, we're in Kenner face racial discrimination. That's a bummer. And of course, was awarded five patents. In summary, Mary Beatrice Davis and Kenner passed away in 06. Okay, so I don't know if we're giving her credit for maxi pad or she did the belt.

• 2:03:15Speaker 01

  Okay.

• 2:03:15Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:03:16Speaker 01

All right. So we didn't learn anything.

• 2:03:17Dax Shepard?

  Nothing, absolutely nothing.

• 2:03:18Speaker 01

Great. Um, now what are the most watched shows on Netflix? This is on Wikipedia and notoriously Netflix doesn't really release this information. So.

• 2:03:29Dax Shepard?

Or they do it weird. They do, they'll do like a minute, like, so I just saw this, um, and congrats to Duma and Minka Kelly.

• 2:03:36Speaker 01

  Oh, ransom canyon.

• 2:03:38Dax Shepard?

Ransom Canyon has 2.6 billion minutes viewed. And to put it in perspective, Mobland, which I love and is seemingly a hit, everyone I know is watching it, had like 580 million. So.

• 2:03:51Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:03:52Dax Shepard?

Four and a half X of second place.

• 2:03:54Speaker 01

  Ooh, e.

• 2:03:55Dax Shepard?

But they do minutes, right? So that's an interesting way to, to quantify it.

• 2:04:00Speaker 01

  Interesting.

• 2:04:00Dax Shepard?

As opposed to like households who.

• 2:04:03Speaker 01

  Is it minutes or hours?

• 2:04:05Dax Shepard?

  Minutes.

• 2:04:05Speaker 01

Interesting. Okay. Well, this is just Wikipedia. Oh, and it's most popular television series by hours watched in their first 28 days. Number one is Squid Game, season one.

• 2:04:17Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:04:18Speaker 01

  Stranger Things.

• 2:04:20Dax Shepard?

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:04:20Speaker 01

Is number two. Three is Wednesday.

• 2:04:23Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:04:24Speaker 01

Four is Squid Game, season two.

• 2:04:27Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:04:28Speaker 01

Five is Dahmer Monster, The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

• 2:04:33Dax Shepard?

Wow. I wouldn't have picked that up just from walking around and people telling me to watch stuff.

• 2:04:40Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:04:41Dax Shepard?

That one's a surprise for me.

• 2:04:42Speaker 01

Uh, six is Money Heist. That was a big, big show. Yes. I think maybe it was in Spanish, I think.

• 2:04:52Dax Shepard?

Yeah. Anna turned us on to it.

• 2:04:53Speaker 01

  She loved it.

• 2:04:54Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:04:55Speaker 01

Um, oh, wait, no, sorry. That's so six is Money Heist, part five.

• 2:04:59Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:05:00Speaker 01

Interesting. Seven, eight and nine are Bridgerton, season one, two and three.

• 2:05:06Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:05:08Speaker 01

And then 10, Money Heist, part four.

• 2:05:11Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:05:12Speaker 01

  11 Stranger Things.

• 2:05:13Dax Shepard?

I need to give Money Heist another shot. It was, it was subtitled.

• 2:05:17Speaker 01

Yeah, I think so. I know. I would, I would watch that. I'm still in ER.

• 2:05:22Dax Shepard?

Oh, I know when I started, which is so fucking good. Deli Boys.

• 2:05:27Speaker 01

Oh, I want to watch Deli Boys. Yeah, I want to.

• 2:05:31Dax Shepard?

It's such a unique tone that they were pulling off beautifully.

• 2:05:35Speaker 01

  Nice.

• 2:05:36Dax Shepard?

  Fantastic.

• 2:05:37Speaker 01

  Cool. I love that.

• 2:05:38Dax Shepard?

You know, I like discovering these hiccups in my thinking.

• 2:05:41Speaker 01

  Uh huh.

• 2:05:42Dax Shepard?

And so there's a joke in Deli Boys. They have to deal with this Italian mob boss quite often. And they're Pakistani. And the patriarch of, not even the patriarch, one of the partners in the criminal organization, an older guy. He hates Indians, right? He's constantly talking about how he hates Indians. And so he's sitting across from this Italian mobster. And he says, Pakistani, but I'm telling the truth. Indians are terrible. And the Italian goes, oh, I thought you were Indian. And he goes, no, I'm not. They are our mortal enemy. And then the mob, the Italian mobster goes. So you guys look identical to each other and you hate one another?

• 2:06:28Dax Shepard?

And he goes, oh, Cookie just got canceled. He's like, then they all laughed the notion of a mobster could get canceled.

• 2:06:34Speaker 01

  Oh, oh, that's funny.

• 2:06:35Dax Shepard?

But then I was like, I think people do go, how do these two people hate each other so much? They're clearly related. And then I was like, yeah, I would never think that about the Irish and the English.

• 2:06:47Speaker 01

  Exactly.

• 2:06:48Dax Shepard?

  The French and the English.

• 2:06:49Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:06:50Dax Shepard?

And then I wondered if people in India are looking at those people going like, wait, you guys are the same people. Why are you fighting? Well, I wonder if it's like, whatever in group you're in, the out, it seems crazy on the outside.

• 2:06:59Speaker 01

  It's always about land and.

• 2:07:02Dax Shepard?

  Religion often.

• 2:07:03Speaker 01

Religion, but yeah, who owns what? And it's, I mean, that's, that's very timely because India and Pakistan were.

• 2:07:11Dax Shepard?

Well, this was obviously made before they've now launched missiles at each other.

• 2:07:14Speaker 01

  But they're in a ceasefire.

• 2:07:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:07:17Speaker 01

But anyway, okay, Seth MacFarlane and Nick, that conversation. That's the sag, on the SAG-AFTRA Foundation YouTube.

• 2:07:26Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:07:26Speaker 01

So you can watch that there if you're interested in animation.

• 2:07:30Dax Shepard?

  Pretty unique conversation.

• 2:07:31Speaker 01

Okay, the seasons of Seth MacFarlane's shows, how many? Family Guy, 23 seasons. American Dad, 19 seasons. Cleveland Show, four seasons.

• 2:07:42Dax Shepard?

  Forty six.

• 2:07:44Speaker 01

  Wow.

• 2:07:45Dax Shepard?

Forty six television, forty six seasons of television.

• 2:07:49Speaker 01

  That's really it.

• 2:07:50Dax Shepard?

  That's all the facts.

• 2:07:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:07:51Dax Shepard?

Well, Nick Kroll, we love you.

• 2:07:53Speaker 01

Well, there was one more, not really a fact.

• 2:07:56Dax Shepard?

  Recovery.

• 2:08:00Speaker 01

He's gonna be sick for another 10 years or so.

• 2:08:03Dax Shepard?

Yeah, uh, like six, six more years he's gotta be in sick. We're not sick anymore.

• 2:08:09Speaker 01

Well, you kind of are. You're still kinda sick.

• 2:08:12Dax Shepard?

Probably more sick than I was pre-kids in general, but like, they just stopped putting their fingers in each other's mouths and butts. And like, like they just, they get a little more separated as they get older.

• 2:08:22Speaker 01

Speaking of kids, um, I wasn't sure if I was gonna bring this up, but why not?

• 2:08:30Dax Shepard?

Yeah, why not? I said I was racist, you know?

• 2:08:34Speaker 01

Well, no, this isn't negative towards kids.

• 2:08:36Dax Shepard?

Oh, right. I'm just saying I revealed a lot that I had some vestigial racial thinking that I caught myself.

• 2:08:44Speaker 01

Sure, yeah. Um, Mother's Day, we just had Mother's Day, right?

• 2:08:50Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:51Speaker 01

It's getting increasingly harder for me.

• 2:08:54Dax Shepard?

  Okay.

• 2:08:56Speaker 01

And I think from, for like so many reasons, I feel overwhelming.

• 2:09:02Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:09:02Speaker 01

Um, and I'm just tracking that.

• 2:09:05Dax Shepard?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:09:05Speaker 01

That it's starting to feel really tough. Um, I'm glad I go home. I go home. I've gone home the last couple of years. And it's nice to be with my mom. Um, and I know it makes them very happy, so I like doing that. But there is something about being there that's hard. When I'm there, especially for moments, uh, events, yearly events, the pass it, like time starts to feel very oppressive. The passage of time.

• 2:09:41Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:09:42Speaker 01

You know, we're, we go to the same places and, you know, I'm going to this like mall that I went to when I was in high school. And to see it be so much the same and also so different, it's just, it feels, it feels sad. It feels melancholic.

• 2:09:59Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:10:00Speaker 01

And, and then seeing my parents' age.

• 2:10:03Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 2:10:04Speaker 01

  Is so hard.

• 2:10:05Dax Shepard?

The lack of permanence to everything.

• 2:10:07Speaker 01

  Yes.

• 2:10:07Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 2:10:08Speaker 01

And I can kind of, Buddhism, I know. And I, when I'm not there, I can detach from it when I'm here.

• 2:10:16Dax Shepard?

And you can keep it time locked in your mind and memory.

• 2:10:20Speaker 01

Uh, yes. And I, I think I can just compartmentalize and like they're there and that's happening, but I'm not seeing. Day to day, like the little things that are changing. So it's ki- it's kinda hard to be there, even though I'm glad I make that decision. That's a little hard. And then I also know being here would be hard because all of my friends have kids.

• 2:10:42Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:43Speaker 01

And that is painful in its own way.

• 2:10:47Dax Shepard?

  Uh huh.

• 2:10:48Speaker 01

And like, it just feels sort of like this day is hard.

• 2:10:51Dax Shepard?

Is it painful because you feel like you're missing out on the mothering experience? Or is it painful because you feel excluded from your friends in a way?

• 2:10:59Speaker 01

  I.

• 2:11:00Dax Shepard?

  Which pain is it?

• 2:11:01Speaker 01

  I think it's both. I think it's.

• 2:11:06Speaker 01

It's so tricky because it's not like on a day to day, I think of the pain of not having children.

• 2:11:13Dax Shepard?

  Mm hmm.

• 2:11:13Speaker 01

  But on that day.

• 2:11:15Dax Shepard?

  Yes.

• 2:11:16Speaker 01

I am aware, I'm just very aware that I don't.

• 2:11:19Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:11:20Speaker 01

And that it's not, it wasn't really a choice. It's just the way my life went, right?

• 2:11:28Dax Shepard?

  Unfolded.

• 2:11:28Speaker 01

Yeah, it unfolded in this way. I made decisions that took me in certain places. I, you know, I'm not married to my high school sweetheart. I didn't have one, you know, and yeah, I'm just like aware, like, oh, my life hasn't gone, didn't go that way.

• 2:11:46Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:11:46Speaker 01

And yes, I can still make decisions that might lead to that, but it's different. It's like really different now. The, me having a kid now is a real choice. It is not like, oh, I fell in love with this person and then maybe we'll have kids. That's the next step. It's, I have to make.

• 2:12:06Dax Shepard?

Oops, I'm pregnant. What do we do? Fuck it, let's do it.

• 2:12:09Speaker 01

It's real, real hard decision making.

• 2:12:12Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:12:13Speaker 01

It kinda, I don't, yeah. And that's, that's an annoying thing to have to think about.

• 2:12:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:12:19Speaker 01

Um, so yeah, I guess I'm just sharing it was a hard take.

• 2:12:22Dax Shepard?

  Closer or further?

• 2:12:24Speaker 01

I don't know. Like it, it, it, it makes me feel, feel like, oh, I wish I had that.

• 2:12:33Speaker 01

But does it make me feel like I'm gonna take those steps to do it?

• 2:12:37Dax Shepard?

If I were you, I would just wanna be crystal clear if it is a desire to have the experience versus the A student in you.

• 2:12:47Speaker 01

  I know.

• 2:12:48Dax Shepard?

That's hard to know which is driving it, but I think one is worth chasing and one is worth overcoming.

• 2:12:56Speaker 01

Yeah, I know. I don't know. Again, that's a question that I I have to ask that I'm kind of resentful that I have to ask, resentful towards my, towards life, I guess, because I know that if I was married and in a partnership, I would, I would have kids.

• 2:13:17Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:13:17Speaker 01

  I would want that.

• 2:13:18Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:13:19Speaker 01

  So.

• 2:13:20Dax Shepard?

What does a guy in your situation do? Like, what is this 37 year old guy who can't go get a donor?

• 2:13:26Speaker 01

  Well, they could.

• 2:13:27Dax Shepard?

I mean, yeah, they could. And then they gotta get a surrogate. And it's definitely more complicated. You're like, you're a stop at a sperm bank away from having a kid.

• 2:13:37Speaker 01

  Well, maybe.

• 2:13:39Dax Shepard?

Well, maybe because of fertility, but you know, like a dude who's not loaded and can't pay for a surrogate and egg and all that stuff. I wonder what, how they wrestle with it, you know?

• 2:13:54Speaker 01

Yeah. Um, I mean, I assume it's the same feeling and the same thing. Like, I guess I have to figure out if I'm gonna like, just be with a person I don't wanna be with, or, or take those steps. In some ways, I mean, it's, it's all hard, but I think for a man, if they have the means, I mean, a lot of women don't have the means to do any of this either.

• 2:14:18Dax Shepard?

How much is a sperm donor? That's not terribly expensive.

• 2:14:21Speaker 01

But to your egg, like, you know, do retrievals and it's expensive.

• 2:14:25Dax Shepard?

  But let's just say you.

• 2:14:28Speaker 01

You have to remove the eggs in order to make the embryo to.

• 2:14:32Dax Shepard?

Oh, they can't put a baster in you and do it?

• 2:14:34Speaker 01

Oh, they can try it. Yeah, some people, that works for some people. It's pretty hard.

• 2:14:39Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:14:39Speaker 01

For it to take, but it works for some people. But then if that doesn't work, you spent money doing that. And then you have to, you know, it's a lot.

• 2:14:45Dax Shepard?

  Right.

• 2:14:46Speaker 01

But for a man, they can make the embryo, you know, they'll take the egg, the sperm, they'll make the embryo, and then they'll implant it into a surrogate.

• 2:14:56Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, I imagine that's a pricey endeavor.

• 2:14:57Speaker 01

I'm sure fertility is so expensive. Another thing that's like, that's a cost that it wouldn't be a cost. I mean, having kids is an insane cost in general, but.

• 2:15:08Dax Shepard?

  To mental health.

• 2:15:09Speaker 01

Yeah, diapers, diapers, ding ding ding, that came up in Nick Kroll's.

• 2:15:13Dax Shepard?

  Diaps.

• 2:15:14Speaker 01

Your diaps and they went bankrupt.

• 2:15:16Dax Shepard?

  Yeah, my diaps went bankrupt.

• 2:15:18Speaker 01

Bad for business. Anyway, I just thought I would share it because I'm sure it's complicated for a lot of people.

• 2:15:25Dax Shepard?

  Surely, Mother's Day.

• 2:15:26Speaker 01

  For so many reasons.

• 2:15:28Dax Shepard?

Carrie sent me this incredible post that a girl at our high school had put on Facebook. And she was a grade younger than us, I believe. I didn't like, of course, I didn't recognize her right away, but it was this really heartfelt, beautiful post about the complicated nature of Mother's Day and how she basically had to say goodbye to her mom at 16 because the mom moved to Arizona and the mom was not healthy mom. And so this girl was living, going to my school.

• 2:15:58Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:15:59Dax Shepard?

  Living on her own.

• 2:16:00Speaker 01

  Oh, my.

• 2:16:01Dax Shepard?

Paying for an apartment. She sent it to me because she goes, side note, that's fun. I was once in detention and Dax Shepard said to me, what'd they put you in for?

• 2:16:11Speaker 01

  Oh, that's funny.

• 2:16:12Dax Shepard?

And then went on to say, don't worry about all this. Your life's really going to start in two minutes. And I know mine's not ending here in this detention.

• 2:16:20Speaker 01

  Oh, wow.

• 2:16:20Dax Shepard?

Whether I said that or not, who knows, maybe in her mind I said that. But I'm delighted that on that detention, we had, you know, like a fun.

• 2:16:28Speaker 01

  Yeah, an interaction.

• 2:16:29Dax Shepard?

Yeah, but it was just a really sweet post and a reminder of like, man, some kids, like the experience can be so rattled. Carrie sent it to me going, I'm such a fucking asshole for bitching about my two loving parents who, you know, whatever.

• 2:16:45Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:46Dax Shepard?

But yeah, there's kids in your high school that are like, they're supporting themselves and living in an apartment.

• 2:16:50Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:51Dax Shepard?

And they don't have any parents.

• 2:16:53Speaker 01

  Yeah.

• 2:16:53Dax Shepard?

  Yeah.

• 2:16:55Speaker 01

  Anyway, well, that's it.

• 2:16:58Dax Shepard?

  All right, love you.

• 2:16:59Speaker 01

  Love you.
