• 0:46Sean Fennessey?

  I'm Sean Finacy.

• 0:46Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm Amanda Dobbins.

• 0:47Sean Fennessey?

And this is the big picture conversation show about 1988. We're in the new studio, but CR is here, so of course we must be drafting. And a special guest is here with us, Bill Simmons.

• 0:57Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 0:57Sean Fennessey?

When were you last on the show?

• 0:59Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 1:00Sean Fennessey?

A year ago? I never asked. Well, you said to me, you said to me, I never, you never ask about a week and a half ago. And I was thinking about it and we were talking about 1988 as a movie draft. And I go down the list and I was like, a lot of Bill Simmons bangers in here. A lot of your stuff is in this year.

• 1:16Speaker 03

  My freshman year in college.

• 1:18Sean Fennessey?

Hold on, I don't want to talk about that yet. Cause you have a million movie opinions and some of which you're brave enough to share publicly, some of which you keep to yourself.

• 1:25Speaker 03

I share all of them. I don't keep anything to myself.

• 1:28Amanda Dobbins?

It all winds up coming out.

• 1:28Speaker 03

  It makes me me.

• 1:29Amanda Dobbins?

You don't have anything to debut here?

• 1:31Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, like did you prep any like modern movie stuff for us?

• 1:35Speaker 03

  Oh, modern stuff?

• 1:36Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:37Speaker 03

Well, you didn't tell me to.

• 1:38Speaker 04

Well, did you see Project Hail Mary?

• 1:40Speaker 03

I didn't see that yet. Okay. It's long. I saw that. It's like a commitment for me during, during like the height of when I'm studying MBA and March Madness. It's like three and a half hours, basically start to finish.

• 1:50Amanda Dobbins?

Is Hammett still your number one film of 2025?

• 1:52Speaker 03

Wasn't my number one film. It was my number one performance.

• 1:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay. I think that's fair.

• 1:56Speaker 03

Really appreciated it and liked it.

• 1:58Speaker 04

You're talking about the little kid, right?

• 2:00Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:02Amanda Dobbins?

  You seen it yet?

• 2:03Speaker 03

  Oh.

• 2:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 2:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Did you cry?

• 2:05Speaker 03

  No.

• 2:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Wow.

• 2:08Speaker 03

  Definitely not.

• 2:12Sean Fennessey?

This episode of The Big Picture is presented by State Farm. Sure, being an expert at movie trivia is impressive. You know what's even more impressive? Being smart about saving money. • 2:39Speaker 03

As always, the comedies always get swept under the rug at the Oscars, which I know is a big passion point of yours.

• 2:44Sean Fennessey?

It is. Were there any big comedies in 25? Happy Gilmore 2?

• 2:48Speaker 03

  None that I can remember.

• 2:48Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 2:49Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:49Sean Fennessey?

  Kind of an issue.

• 2:50Speaker 03

I thought it was a good movie year, though. So it was, I think, like an A-. Lot of big directors, some good arguments, good for content.

• 2:58Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, we had a nice time.

• 2:59Speaker 03

My favorite movie was probably Sinners, but I know that's minority opinion, but it was the one I saw the most times.

• 3:06Sean Fennessey?

I think it's only minority in the Academy at this point. I feel like most people are pretty on board.

• 3:10Speaker 04

How high up would F1 be for you?

• 3:12Speaker 03

I've seen it three times. I loved it in the theater. I understand why it didn't win the Oscar. I wasn't expecting it.

• 3:18Sean Fennessey?

Were you, when that movie gets nominated for Best Picture, are you excited? Are you like, hell, yeah? This is what we need in the Academy?

• 3:25Speaker 03

I thought we should have done seven. I think seven's the right number.

• 3:28Sean Fennessey?

  Seven films nominated?

• 3:29Speaker 03

  For best film.

• 3:30Amanda Dobbins?

  This year or every year?

• 3:32Speaker 03

  I think nine's a little fat here.

• 3:34Speaker 04

I do, too. I think that there's a lot of sacred, like ceremonial sacrifices that just get thrown into this picture.

• 3:40Sean Fennessey?

The first one you would have cut this year was Sinners. The second one was what?

• 3:42Speaker 04

  Caramel value.

• 3:43Sean Fennessey?

  Secret Agent?

• 3:44Speaker 04

Yeah. Too late to focus on when.

• 3:49Speaker 04

And I would have recut Hamlet and just made it about Paul Meskell.

• 3:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 3:52Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 3:54Sean Fennessey?

He should have been the one performing.

• 3:55Speaker 04

There should have been a male tech on F1. It shouldn't have been Carrie Condon. It shouldn't have been another guy. No, I think it was a really good movie year. And even some films that weren't even nominated were some of my most beloved.

• 4:06Speaker 03

You know one of the reasons it was a good movie year? Because we didn't have a two-year pandemic and we were actually able to make stuff again.

• 4:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 4:12Speaker 03

  But that was one thing.

• 4:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Outside.

• 4:13Speaker 03

Because if you look back at the, like, when we, the first couple of years of The Ringer, like, they were pretty good movie years. We had a lot of stuff to talk about. Talk about.

• 4:21Sean Fennessey?

I think the best one was the one right before covid nineteen was amazing. Yeah.

• 4:24Amanda Dobbins?

Also twenty seventeen was Lady Bird and Get Out and

• 4:28Speaker 03

  That was great.

• 4:29Amanda Dobbins?

And yeah, twenty seventeen and twenty nineteen were amazing years.

• 4:32Speaker 03

Yeah, so I think we're back.

• 4:35Sean Fennessey?

  We're clawing back.

• 4:35Speaker 03

But we have this next generation, these eighteen to twenty-two year olds who've just been filming stuff with their phones since they were like seven years old. These are going to be our next Scorsese's.

• 4:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 4:44Sean Fennessey?

They're gonna go to cinema or are they gonna become influencers and content creators?

• 4:49Speaker 03

No, they're gonna have their next view of just how to make their people who like movies, but also have all those skills. That's gonna be, that's gonna be our nineteen seventies crew.

• 4:59Sean Fennessey?

What stopped you from being one of those people?

• 5:01Speaker 04

Uh, it was too time consuming and demanded way too much focus.

• 5:06Sean Fennessey?

What about talent? Did you have it?

• 5:07Speaker 04

Not really, not for that, yeah.

• 5:09Speaker 03

The cigarette breaks would have been good for you, though. Hold on, guys, you gotta take a break. Five minutes, I'm just gonna talk to DP for a second.

• 5:15Speaker 04

Take cigarette breaks without even becoming a filmmaker.

• 5:18Amanda Dobbins?

Can I ask you one more, uh, modern cinema question?

• 5:21Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 5:22Amanda Dobbins?

  The Odyssey, in or out?

• 5:23Speaker 03

  Ooh, all the way in.

• 5:25Amanda Dobbins?

  All the way in.

• 5:26Speaker 03

  All the way in.

• 5:26Amanda Dobbins?

You excited about the source material?

• 5:28Speaker 03

  Chris Nolan.

• 5:29Speaker 04

Do you think Damon's gonna bring any Boston?

• 5:31Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 5:32Speaker 04

  Boston to, to Greece there?

• 5:33Speaker 03

I'm in. I've, I've intentionally tried to read nothing, watch any trailer, and I don't know who's in it other than Matt Damon.

• 5:39Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, do you know the story of the Odyssey?

• 5:40Speaker 03

  Of course.

• 5:41Sean Fennessey?

Do you think Matt Damon is gonna hit the Cyclops with, you think you're better than me? It's in play. It's in play.

• 5:47Speaker 03

This is probably the last act for him, because he's heading into his late fifties, and I think it is hard to be in action here after a certain point.

• 5:55Sean Fennessey?

Are you thinking he might die soon? What do you mean by that?

• 5:57Speaker 03

No, I just think you age into a different level of roles.

• 6:00Speaker 04

  I think he's for that.

• 6:00Sean Fennessey?

I think he's well suited to.

• 6:02Speaker 04

  Color of Money Paul Mina.

• 6:04Speaker 03

Yeah, he's gonna embrace it, whereas like somebody like, uh, our guy TC has not.

• 6:09Sean Fennessey?

  Timothy Chalamet?

• 6:10Speaker 03

  No, Tom Cruise.

• 6:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, right, okay.

• 6:12Speaker 03

  Not embraced it yet.

• 6:13Amanda Dobbins?

No, well, we'll see this fall.

• 6:15Speaker 04

We never talked about the probably bullshit rumor that Tom Cruise is gonna be the villain in Joseph Kaczynski's Miami Vice.

• 6:20Sean Fennessey?

We didn't. I'd like to actually get your thoughts on all of this.

• 6:23Speaker 04

I told you my thoughts immediately. Did not pass the sniff test.

• 6:25Sean Fennessey?

  Didn't seem real.

• 6:26Speaker 04

  No.

• 6:26Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. It was debunked for us by a source.

• 6:29Speaker 04

I like to sometimes live in like the alternate reality.

• 6:32Amanda Dobbins?

You want, you want TC back out there?

• 6:34Speaker 04

TC is Calderon or whatever, like TC just being, being like Neil from Collateral, but in Miami Vice again would be amazing.

• 6:42Sean Fennessey?

Do you want him doing like a Puerto Rican accent?

• 6:45Speaker 04

  No.

• 6:45Sean Fennessey?

Would you be comfortable with that?

• 6:46Speaker 04

We could, we could iterate on his ethnic background if we, I'm just saying like Miami Vice is rich with characters like that, that he could inhabit.

• 6:53Speaker 03

My dream for TC, I'm not just saying this because Amanda's here, but like a Nancy Meyers thing where he's like a divorced or a widowed older guy falling in love with like a slightly younger woman, like an Anne Hathaway, maybe like mid, late 40s.

• 7:08Speaker 04

Let's do it. His greatest stunt, having a human relationship.

• 7:12Amanda Dobbins?

You gotta get him out of the helicopter though.

• 7:13Speaker 03

I wanna say like basically Jerry Maguire 30 years later, coming to grips with some stuff.

• 7:17Sean Fennessey?

What's a good Nancy Meyers-esque title? Is it like, it's about time? And like it's a double entendre with like, we finally see Tom Cruise back in.

• 7:26Speaker 04

You gotta hand it to him.

• 7:27Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 7:30Sean Fennessey?

  Honestly, very good.

• 7:32Speaker 04

  And Cruise is like.

• 7:34Sean Fennessey?

It's like a, like a bouquet of flowers in one hand and his cellphone in the other. He's gotta make a choice. Love or money?

• 7:40Speaker 04

And Albert Brooks and, and you know, Alec Baldwin are like, oh.

• 7:44Speaker 03

James Earl's the one with Reese Witherspoon, where she was a softball player?

• 7:48Sean Fennessey?

  How do you know?

• 7:49Speaker 03

How do you know? That was Nancy Meyers is like, man, that's a great title. I should take that for me.

• 7:54Sean Fennessey?

  How do you know?

• 7:55Amanda Dobbins?

How do you know? Question mark.

• 7:56Sean Fennessey?

  No, no question mark.

• 7:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Are you sure?

• 7:58Sean Fennessey?

I'm almost positive there's no question mark at the end of that title.

• 8:01Amanda Dobbins?

  No, you're right.

• 8:02Speaker 04

James Brooks getting like 10 years to research softball is one of the great.

• 8:07Sean Fennessey?

Well, you do it for free.

• 8:09Speaker 03

  I tried to watch it.

• 8:11Speaker 04

  No.

• 8:12Sean Fennessey?

  It's tough.

• 8:12Speaker 03

Willie McKay, is that what it's called?

• 8:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, Ellen McKay.

• 8:15Speaker 03

  Ellen McKay?

• 8:15Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 8:16Speaker 03

My wife and I tried to watch. My wife was out in 15 minutes. I held on for another like six.

• 8:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Right.

• 8:21Speaker 03

It was on Hulu. I just couldn't like hang it on the clip. It's James. I just, just didn't work.

• 8:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 8:28Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, it just didn't work.

• 8:28Speaker 03

Kudos to him for continuing to make movies. It just, that one didn't work.

• 8:31Speaker 04

  Jim Brooks, no 1988 movie.

• 8:33Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 8:34Amanda Dobbins?

  No, because 87 is broadcasted.

• 8:35Sean Fennessey?

This is really his era, though. This is kind of a nice segue, CR. You ready to go forward?

• 8:39Speaker 04

We can stick around on contemporary cinema if you want.

• 8:43Sean Fennessey?

Let's start with you, because I know Bill has a lot of thoughts about this time, but who were you in 1988? What were you doing?

• 8:49Speaker 04

Just banging on doors for Dukakis, you know, making sure the Duke.

• 8:54Sean Fennessey?

Were you the one who put him in that tank?

• 8:56Speaker 04

I was like, people will love it. 11 year olds are gonna love it. No, I was a, I was a VHS kid. So a lot of these movies I've seen double digits times. I very, I wouldn't say very many of them I saw in the theater, but this was like the peak of going and renting two, three videos a day and coming home and then getting late charges and forgetting to rewind and all the, all the things that went along with blockbusters and smaller video stores back then. But what a time.

• 9:25Speaker 03

Plus, we had cable, too. So there was two different ways to go see whatever.

• 9:28Speaker 04

I was looking at the box office, you know, box office mojo also has like, you know, like the release date and all this stuff. And in April, there was still stuff from the previous Christmas in theater, like, like Good Morning Vietnam is still in theaters in like, like a thousand theaters in April. And that was also a thing I do think I remember is maybe getting to go see movies much later in their runs. If like my parents finally broke down and were like, I don't know what to do with you, so you can see Good Morning Vietnam. Um, yeah, just an incredible variety of stuff.

• 9:59Speaker 03

And also, I don't even trust the box office figures because there was so much sneaking into the next movie and going for the entire day and seeing three movies. That's what we did over and over again.

• 10:09Speaker 04

I mean, most horror movies, you could probably add like $2 million on just all kids sneaking into them.

• 10:14Speaker 03

There was no, there was nobody working at any theater. It would be like a 14 movie theater complex. There's only a couple of these left in bigger cities and you would just go at 12 and just bang out three.

• 10:24Sean Fennessey?

Were you seeing a lot of movies at this time?

• 10:26Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 10:27Sean Fennessey?

  In the theater?

• 10:27Speaker 03

Oh, yeah. We had less to do. Yeah. Yeah. But it was, we, we knew what was coming out. I think Premier Magazine was already around at this point. There was just starting to be like some sense of the culture of it. And as you can see from the movies we're about to draft, they were just fucking awesome movies. Yeah. With huge stars. It was like, I remember seeing Cocktail with my, we talked about this when we did the rewatchables with my buddy Jim Grady in New York City. Where we were going out in New York City that night, cause we could legally drink there. But we saw Cocktail during the day and it was like, structured this whole day, we'll see Cocktail at the 2:30 show. We'll drive it in the city. But it was like a big deal. Some of these actors. Excuse me. Rob Williams.

• 11:11Speaker 03

We didn't know who Bruce Willis was yet, but Cruise.

• 11:14Speaker 04

  Costner.

• 11:15Speaker 03

Stallone's in here. Costner I cared about at this point. We just had people you wanted to go to the theater for. Which has been the problem really this entire century. How many people do you want to go see just because it's like Costner?

• 11:26Speaker 04

Yeah, that's a really good way of putting it.

• 11:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 11:29Sean Fennessey?

Who were you? What were you doing?

• 11:30Amanda Dobbins?

I was three, turning four. So I was primarily interested in the Oscar winning cinema of Julie Andrews. At this point, on VHS. So this is another draft where it's, you're doing the homework after the fact. And so it's kind of what got handed down to me by my parents and the world's number one Barry Levinson fan, Knox Dobbins, my dad. And then what I sought out on my own. And what kind of rises to the pop cultural, this is important, like you need to check this out even though it's been 10 or 15 years later. So it'll be interesting. Some of these categories are very full. And some of these categories, a little padding for me, that's okay.

• 12:11Speaker 04

I have a question about that, but I want to hear your biographical snapshot of 1988.

• 12:15Sean Fennessey?

I was six. I probably just started going to the movies pretty regularly at this time. I was just telling a story to someone the other day that where I grew up, there was about an eight minute walk from my house. I grew up near the Walt Whitman Mall. I grew up in Huntington, which is where Walt Whitman was born. Everything was named after Walt Whitman. The Walton Mall had a single movie theater attached to it. It's one of the very first mall movie theaters in America. It opened in 1963 and I saw a shit ton of movies there in my life. It's closed now, but I can remember going to that mall with my little sister and going to see like all of the new golden age Disney classics. So like in 89, it was the Little Mermaid. In 90, it was the Beauty and the Beast. In 92, it was Aladdin. In 94, it was The Lion King.

• 13:00Sean Fennessey?

So like, I remember that stuff very vividly. I don't remember watching a ton of these movies in 88, just because I'm a little bit younger.

• 13:09Speaker 03

Except for Who Framed Roger Rabbit, which established his love for redheads from that moment.

• 13:13Sean Fennessey?

We will get there for sure.

• 13:16Amanda Dobbins?

Bringing up Who Framed Roger Rabbit, this is an interesting list in that there is one film here that is like emotionally significant to each person at the table that I could think of off the top of my head.

• 13:27Speaker 03

  Just one.

• 13:28Amanda Dobbins?

Well, not just one, but there's one where it's like, if the person in question doesn't get it, it hurts. It scars the mythology a bit. And that's intriguing. And, you know, and Sean's is Who Framed Roger Rabbit. I think we all know, well, yours has already been name checked.

• 13:44Speaker 03

  Nobody knows what mine is.

• 13:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Well, you're full of surprises.

• 13:48Sean Fennessey?

There are a few big bill movies on this list.

• 13:50Speaker 03

  Last Temptation of Christ, guys.

• 13:53Speaker 03

  Good soundtrack.

• 13:54Sean Fennessey?

Well, you guys certainly share one in this year, but I thought this would be a really fun one for the four of us specifically. Cause like you say, there's these like talismans, these idols that really matter to us.

• 14:04Speaker 03

I mean, the bummer was the sequels were really bad.

• 14:06Speaker 04

Bad. So I was curious about this, Sean. You did, you elected sequels.

• 14:11Amanda Dobbins?

He texted me this morning being like, is sequels really happening? Was this on purpose?

• 14:15Speaker 04

I, for some reason I had made my list. I had kind of sort of lightly organized it. And then I was like, did I miss five movies? And I was like, no, I think this is just a challenge. And then also your box office slider, very interestingly went to 75.

• 14:32Sean Fennessey?

Well, I'll, I'll tell you my thinking on both. One, I think these, these drafts, I mean, we've now done, I don't even know how many, over almost a hundred, probably.

• 14:42Sean Fennessey?

  We.

• 14:44Speaker 03

  You've done a hundred drafts.

• 14:45Amanda Dobbins?

Life is slow and fast at the same time.

• 14:46Speaker 03

  You've done like 60.

• 14:48Sean Fennessey?

You might be right. We've been doing those since 2020, once a month. So how many months is that?

• 14:52Speaker 03

  Yeah, like 60, 65.

• 14:54Amanda Dobbins?

So, yeah, so that's 60 plus a couple, yeah.

• 14:57Sean Fennessey?

  Plus five, yeah, okay. So.

• 15:00Sean Fennessey?

Every time we do it, it should definitely be movies that you love, movies that represent what was going on in the space at that time, movies that aged better, that people have a warmer feeling for. I think it's nice to get a snapshot of the state of the art. The sequel thing gives you that snapshot to some extent. The box office, here's why I did this this way. We did 1989 last year and we had the same threshold. And there were 17 movies eligible with 75 million dollar threshold. In 1988, there are only nine. There also was a 350 million dollar movie in 1989. No movie cracked 200 million dollars in the US in 1988. So what happened? What was that about? Because we think of this as a great year, but the returns don't reveal a great year in movie going.

• 15:45Speaker 03

I'm trying to remember. I just think, first of all, there were so many movies back then. And maybe it feels like people just grabbed oxygen from other movies.

• 15:54Sean Fennessey?

It might have been way more 60 million dollar movies. And that might have been, we're not seeing that when we look at the top.

• 15:59Speaker 03

There wasn't that one massive giant thing that was coming out. And there also wasn't like the, really the phenomenon either. Cause two years later, I think is Pretty Woman. And Ghost was two or three years later. But these movies that kind of came out of nowhere and then everybody went. And I didn't, when I was looking at the box office mojo for this, like,

• 16:20Speaker 03

there's not, like Coming to America was Eddie Murphy. Of course we're going to that. Good Morning Vietnam was, was Robin Williams trying to be funny. And Big had the best buzz of anything. Big was like, we all left Tom Hanks that whole decade. And it's like, this is Penny Marshall. The studio loves it. They think it's gonna be, and everybody went and then everybody loved it.

• 16:39Speaker 04

I don't know how to even compare it to now. Cause so much of now is also pocket watching with like, well, it actually cost 250 million dollars. So I'll see you in three months and we'll see if it's in the black.

• 16:49Sean Fennessey?

  Right.

• 16:51Speaker 04

When you look at, say that, that April of 1988 that I was referring to earlier, you've got one outlier big earner at the top. And then everything else is like bunched together, but between 10 and 16 million dollars for that month, which is just steady. It's just doubles, you know? And I think that's what they really excelled at. And it's a completely different model where it's just like, no, we want people coming to the weekend, to come into the movies twice a week, five times a month. And so we gotta give them a lot of stuff to choose from. And to your point about movie stars, I think there was like a wider variety of people. It was like, I don't really know much about. You know, this cast, but I like Neil Simon and I like Matthew Broderick, so I'll check it out. You know, or

• 17:34Speaker 03

I saw that in the theater. I didn't really like it. Some Biloxi Blues in the theater. We were like, well, there was nothing else. We'd seen everything else. It's like, all right, fine, Matthew Broderick. He was Ferris Bueller two years ago. Let's go.

• 17:43Amanda Dobbins?

There's also 1988 starts a lot of franchises or, you know, it's interesting to have a sequel category here where there are a lot of firsts.

• 17:52Sean Fennessey?

There's only one sequel in the top 10 at the box office.

• 17:55Amanda Dobbins?

And so, but you know, the, it's a, it's a starting point and maybe even a little bit of a change going into the nineties. So that, you know, the first movie doesn't rack up as much money.

• 18:05Sean Fennessey?

Mm hmm. I think also Rain Man was number one this year at the box office and the reason why is because it had that long tail that you were describing where it was an awards movie. And it was in theaters forever. So it got to play for a long period of time. Like Hamlet's not in movie theaters anymore. You know, One Battle is not in movie theaters anymore. It operates way differently now than it used to.

• 18:23Speaker 03

Well, but Cruise was the biggest star we had coming out of 88.

• 18:26Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 18:27Speaker 03

This is like his MVP season.

• 18:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 18:29Speaker 03

He's, Cocktail has no business being, where did it finish?

• 18:33Sean Fennessey?

  The 78 million.

• 18:34Speaker 03

Biggest movie. Like, that's insane. Cocktail's, I love Cocktail.

• 18:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Right, yeah.

• 18:38Speaker 03

It's unbelievable that it made 78 million dollars, but people were just in on Cruise.

• 18:42Amanda Dobbins?

That's because you planned to see it at 2:30 before you drove into the city.

• 18:44Speaker 03

Might have been 50 million dollars, might have been mine.

• 18:46Speaker 04

There was also, they were using their leverage because they essentially controlled the two ways you could see movies between home video and theaters. So they would control those windows where they were like, if you don't see it now, you have to wait a year before it hits video shelves. So people were a little bit more motivated to be like, okay, this has been out for four months, but I want to see it because I don't want to have to wait till like next summer to see this.

• 19:09Speaker 03

I do remember in the moment, the next summer, like thinking something might be heading the wrong way. And even like having, because there were so many sequels and specifically the Indiana Jones movie, which we were excited to see and we all liked, but it just felt familiar.

• 19:23Speaker 04

  Crusade?

• 19:24Speaker 03

Yeah. When I was looking at the 88 list, it's a lot of like original stuff that just caught people, caught actors that in the right time in their career were really good ideas. Are movies that couldn't be a sequel. You couldn't have Big Two unless it was. Probably like a really dark thriller.

• 19:40Sean Fennessey?

  Every single.

• 19:41Speaker 03

She's still obsessed with him 20 years later.

• 19:42Sean Fennessey?

Every single movie in the top seven in 89 either was a sequel or kicked off a franchise.

• 19:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 19:48Sean Fennessey?

And that is just one year later where the, you know, almost the opposite is true for these movies, which is really interesting. You know, two Tom Cruise movies, two Mike Nichols movies in this year, to your point about Biloxi Blues. Lot of heavyweight filmmakers made movies this year.

• 20:01Speaker 03

  Two Harrison Ford movies.

• 20:03Sean Fennessey?

Right, two Harrison Ford movies. I don't, I don't usually do this, but Scorsese, Coppola, Tim Burton, Lawrence Kasdan, Ron Howard, Woody Allen, Vim Venders, Clint Eastwood, Robert Zemeckis, Jonathan Demme. You can go on down the line. All of the major horror guys had movies. Wes Craven, John Carpenter, George Romero. You know, you had your Gary and Penny Marshall had a movie this year. Frank Oz had a movie this year. Like a lot of the like well-known Hollywood professionals were making a lot of movies at this time. It was very active. Ivan Reitman had a movie this year. So it's interesting that like, it's a mixed bag. If almost, almost none of them made their best movie this year?

• 20:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 20:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 20:40Speaker 03

  Mom, Bruce Willis.

• 20:43Sean Fennessey?

Well, yeah, then there's that too. And then that's a movie that kind of changed movies forever in a way as well.

• 20:47Speaker 03

The star power is incredible. It's name a star from the eighties and nineties. They had a movie this year and it was probably a good movie. And some people, like Hanks was in two movies.

• 20:55Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm.

• 20:55Speaker 03

A lot of people were doubling them up.

• 20:57Amanda Dobbins?

Three, four? We haven't said Michelle Pfeiffer yet.

• 20:59Speaker 03

  The queen.

• 21:00Amanda Dobbins?

I know, I know, but this, this is another thing.

• 21:02Speaker 03

Julia Roberts has her kind of throwing, throwing the fishing line out like, I'm here, guys.

• 21:07Speaker 04

  Just looking at some pizza.

• 21:07Amanda Dobbins?

But I do always feel like because of my age that I'm a little bit behind some of the eighties stars. Like I missed Demi Moore at the height.

• 21:17Speaker 03

  Like Kathleen Turner.

• 21:17Amanda Dobbins?

I missed Michelle Pfeiffer. You know, by the time that we were conscious, Michelle Pfeiffer was doing, what's the movie where she, you know, teaches the.

• 21:25Speaker 03

  Dangerous Minds.

• 21:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, you know, it's not.

• 21:28Sean Fennessey?

Different from Dangerous Liaisons from this year.

• 21:29Amanda Dobbins?

Right, from this year. But so, but this is, this is Pfeiffer at the absolute peak of her powers.

• 21:36Sean Fennessey?

I don't think I told you this. I saw, I did talk about it on the 89 pod. I saw Fabulous Baker Boys for the first time last year and I was just blown away by it.

• 21:44Speaker 03

  It's a grand slam.

• 21:45Speaker 04

  It is.

• 21:46Speaker 03

The other thing about, uh, there were some people in here in the eighties, we had less to talk about. There were some people you always liked. It was like, I, it was like the old, I'm buying stock in blank joke. There were some people like, I like that guy, or I like that lady. And you're hoping it would happen.

• 22:02Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:02Speaker 03

And it really happened for a bunch of people, like even Hanks. Hanks was not Hanks until Big. We knew who he was the whole decade. He had big movies. Splash was a hit. But he was kind of bouncing around. You're like, is this gonna happen for this guy? And then he did Big.

• 22:15Speaker 04

  It's two this year.

• 22:16Speaker 03

Willis was on Moonlighting. It's like, that guy's a movie star. And then he has Die Hard. But it was, there's like eight or nine of those in here. Even like De Niro doing comedy was a huge deal. Like, I didn't even know he could do that.

• 22:26Speaker 04

It's also an interesting year in the relationship between mainstream and independent cinema because I don't even know if you would say this is the, the slacker era yet, like, you know.

• 22:37Speaker 03

  We're almost there though.

• 22:38Speaker 04

Like, she's gotta have to come out, do the right things the next year. Sex, Lies and Videotape is the next year. Jarmusch puts a movie out in 89. There are underground filmmakers who are emerging, but they're not, there's not that like indie cinema Sundance moment yet.

• 22:52Speaker 03

Keenan's was the, was the one I remember from this year.

• 22:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 22:55Speaker 03

I'm gonna get you sucker. That was like, I don't, he, I don't think he spent a lot of money on it. And it was, it was like kind of a ground soul movie, but it felt like that started either in 89 or 90, I think.

• 23:04Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. I mean, Spike had a movie, he had School Days this year, but then not, it wasn't the big massive breakthrough. You're right that it was not, they, the independent movement had not been like subsumed into Hollywood.

• 23:14Speaker 03

  Spike was famous in 1988.

• 23:15Speaker 04

And this is premier max too. So it's like, you know, you're, we're still in a moment where they haven't created like a new, like, movies for like awards. Like, there are award movies, but I don't even know if you would even be able to define what they were at the time.

• 23:30Sean Fennessey?

You were referring earlier about certain guys in the government who got well-known for never raising their voices, but starting wars. And there are a lot of film directors this year that are kind of similar, like 58-year-old men who are just very assured hands, who are very good at making movies, but they're not a part of like a cool, young class.

• 23:47Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 23:47Sean Fennessey?

And maybe this is like a- I don't know, I'd say every episode is a transitional moment, but it feels like it, right?

• 23:52Speaker 03

Yeah, the other thing that changed, we're basically done with the 80s teen comedies. And you see, we've moved into this license to drive, they're just not as good. 87 was like the last year where you had Can't Buy Me Love and like really good movies that still hold up. These, the teen movies from this era just.

• 24:08Amanda Dobbins?

I hadn't seen any of them until.

• 24:10Speaker 03

  Not great.

• 24:11Amanda Dobbins?

  Prepping for this.

• 24:13Sean Fennessey?

Any other stray thoughts before we determine our draft order?

• 24:16Speaker 04

Uh, just also like this kind of mass volume Hollywood output also like really mixes up genres. So that there's a lot of like, you could put it in drama, you could put it in action, you could put it in a variety of places.

• 24:30Sean Fennessey?

We're gonna need to talk about that. So there's seven categories.

• 24:34Speaker 03

Com- you cut out comedy and the dot comedy is one of them.

• 24:36Sean Fennessey?

Oh, comedy is one of them. Yeah, I don't know why that isn't here. Sorry, guys.

• 24:39Speaker 03

I just assumed you missed it.

• 24:40Sean Fennessey?

Yes, comedy is in this, yes.

• 24:42Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 24:43Sean Fennessey?

Totally missed that. There's, the comedy list is so long, yes.

• 24:49Sean Fennessey?

My apologies, I did cut it out. Seven categories, those categories are drama, comedy, action, horror, thriller, Oscar nominee, sequel, blockbuster, the threshold is $75 million, and wild card.

• 25:01Speaker 03

And we all have to have an Oscar nominee, and it can only be one of the five movies?

• 25:05Sean Fennessey?

Nope, it can be any movie that got an Oscar nomination that year, period, in any category. So you have a, you can get a long list for that Oscar nominee.

• 25:13Speaker 03

  Cocktail no nominations?

• 25:15Amanda Dobbins?

I think it did get a.

• 25:17Sean Fennessey?

Did it get a music nomination?

• 25:18Amanda Dobbins?

I think so. Let me, I was looking at it.

• 25:21Speaker 03

Oh, Brian Brown got best supporting actor.

• 25:25Speaker 03

  Coghlan's Law.

• 25:26Sean Fennessey?

So the challenge, as Chris pointed out, is.

• 25:28Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm wrong, it didn't, I'm sorry.

• 25:31Speaker 03

I'm not shocked to hear this.

• 25:32Sean Fennessey?

So the challenge here is that there are only nine movies eligible for blockbuster. So there will probably be a run on that category.

• 25:39Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 25:39Sean Fennessey?

There are a lot of sequels, but I would not describe too many of them as beloved.

• 25:43Speaker 04

  That's for heads, yeah.

• 25:44Sean Fennessey?

So you had to go and do your research on that one. I assume you guys did?

• 25:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 25:50Sean Fennessey?

You knew the comedy was coming? You feel good about?

• 25:52Amanda Dobbins?

I knew comedy was coming. Sequel, I realized, I would say today's Wednesday, so Monday afternoon.

• 25:58Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 25:59Amanda Dobbins?

  But with enough time.

• 26:00Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 26:01Amanda Dobbins?

So I budgeted some things out. We'll see.

• 26:03Speaker 04

The comedy thing actually helps a little bit here. Loosens me up.

• 26:07Sean Fennessey?

Okay, good. I mean, this might be the best lineup of comedies ever in the history of movie drafts, in my opinion. There is, I think it's 20 movies.

• 26:17Speaker 04

  I was shocked by that.

• 26:17Sean Fennessey?

  20 movies deep.

• 26:18Speaker 04

  Movies that have held up.

• 26:19Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. I think that's it. Jack, are you ready to determine the order?

• 26:24Speaker 04

And you hate Funny Farm, so that's not even one of your 20.

• 26:26Sean Fennessey?

  Not on my board.

• 26:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 26:27Sean Fennessey?

  Not on my board.

• 26:28Speaker 04

You hate Funny Farm? Yeah, he hates Funny Farm. It's one of the weirdest Sean opinions.

• 26:32Sean Fennessey?

When did we talk about this? It was on the rewatch list recently.

• 26:34Speaker 04

  You were dismissive and...

• 26:36Sean Fennessey?

  And you were mad.

• 26:37Speaker 04

Pulling the full Sean on it.

• 26:38Sean Fennessey?

  You were a big mad.

• 26:38Speaker 04

That movie's bad. That movie's bad.

• 26:41Sean Fennessey?

No, I don't think it's that funny, I'm sorry. Your beloved George Roy Hill.

• 26:43Speaker 04

Wasn't there a guy? Wasn't there the Anna de Armas, Chris Evans movie had a tribute to Funny Farm that was cut out? Remember that story?

• 26:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Ghosted?

• 26:51Speaker 04

Yeah. Dexter Fletcher was like, "I had a whole opening that was an homage to Funny Farm."

• 26:57Sean Fennessey?

That's very weird. Did you see Ghosted?

• 26:59Speaker 04

  No.

• 27:00Amanda Dobbins?

  I can't recommend it.

• 27:03Sean Fennessey?

Okay, let's do the draft order. Jack Sanders.

• 27:05Speaker 05

Very briefly, one thing we didn't mention. This year is also infamously known as one of the worst Academy Awards of all time, with Rob Lowe and Snow White doing the opening number.

• 27:14Sean Fennessey?

  Great point.

• 27:15Speaker 05

And I was recently reading Michael Scholman's Oscar Awards, and he talks at great length about how both the Academy felt the industry was stale and the award show was stale. That's why they hired Alan Carr. That's why they took a big swing. They fell on their face and it was embarrassing, but I feel like it definitely was a turning point.

• 27:32Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, they did such a great job the next year by giving the best Oscar to Driving Miss Daisy.

• 27:37Speaker 05

Does anybody want the first pick?

• 27:39Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 27:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 27:41Speaker 04

  No, we gotta do it.

• 27:41Speaker 05

  Wow, manifesting it. CR.

• 27:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, okay.

• 27:44Speaker 04

  The month goes on.

• 27:48Sean Fennessey?

This will be your final appearance on this show, in CR month.

• 27:52Speaker 05

  Drafting second. Bill Simmons.

• 27:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay. Guests first, I guess?

• 27:57Speaker 04

  Feeling good.

• 27:59Sean Fennessey?

  Such kindness from Jack Sanders.

• 28:05Speaker 04

  Third will be Sean.

• 28:08Sean Fennessey?

  You're fine.

• 28:09Speaker 04

  Amanda Dobbins.

• 28:09Speaker 03

  Stop, squad.

• 28:10Amanda Dobbins?

  I hope so.

• 28:11Sean Fennessey?

You'll be, you'll be fine. You're gonna get what you need.

• 28:13Amanda Dobbins?

I, I think so. If everyone, you know, did you come with love in your heart? Or did you come to be a, you know, a spreadsheet man?

• 28:20Sean Fennessey?

How many, in the history of your career as a podcaster?

• 28:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 28:23Sean Fennessey?

How many times have you come to an episode with love in your heart?

• 28:28Amanda Dobbins?

I think once or twice. I think so. Marriage Story?

• 28:32Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, yeah, good episode.

• 28:33Amanda Dobbins?

And I think, I don't know, what's the other one where we started crying? Children of Men, that was a surprise.

• 28:39Sean Fennessey?

That wasn't love, though. You were just like, what if something bad happens to me?

• 28:43Amanda Dobbins?

Well, not to me, to children. But, but that's two, to answer your question. And I did give you one battle after another in a movie draft once, in a movie auction once.

• 28:52Sean Fennessey?

  That was good.

• 28:52Amanda Dobbins?

  So that's three times.

• 28:53Sean Fennessey?

  That was nice.

• 28:54Amanda Dobbins?

  There we go.

• 28:55Speaker 03

I was excited for CR to just get weird with this entire draft and just do Last Temptation, Mississippi Burning.

• 29:02Speaker 04

  I know.

• 29:02Amanda Dobbins?

I'm listening. It could still happen.

• 29:04Speaker 04

Now I'm a little bit like, I'm like, I wish I was third.

• 29:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 29:08Sean Fennessey?

  Why?

• 29:09Speaker 04

Because I feel a pressure to take the thing that's probably the best for the board versus the thing that's closest to my heart.

• 29:16Sean Fennessey?

I'm so fascinated to hear you say that.

• 29:18Speaker 04

  Really?

• 29:18Amanda Dobbins?

Haven't we learned also that you should always take the thing closest to your heart?

• 29:24Amanda Dobbins?

It's what I've learned, but you know, this, you could also do, what, what did he pick in New York? Die Hard, DHV?

• 29:29Sean Fennessey?

  DH with a V.

• 29:30Amanda Dobbins?

  DH with a V.

• 29:31Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 29:31Amanda Dobbins?

You can, listen, DH with a V, Iron Man 3, Live Your Truth, buddy.

• 29:35Speaker 03

So you said there was one movie you think all of us were like, really want?

• 29:39Amanda Dobbins?

I, there is a movie that I associate with each of you.

• 29:44Speaker 04

Each person has a movie that she associates with us.

• 29:47Speaker 03

  Is it Accidental Tourist?

• 29:50Amanda Dobbins?

I can't wait to talk to you about Accidental Tourist.

• 29:53Speaker 03

  Sound of my board.

• 29:54Sean Fennessey?

  Baffling movie.

• 29:54Speaker 04

That's the second time Big Bill Hertz come up today.

• 29:57Speaker 03

  Sound of my board.

• 29:58Speaker 04

  No.

• 29:58Amanda Dobbins?

I would like to talk about Bill Hertz.

• 30:00Speaker 04

  Sure.

• 30:00Amanda Dobbins?

  Who I.

• 30:01Speaker 03

It's the end of the run, right here.

• 30:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, I, I've never gotten it. I just, I don't.

• 30:06Sean Fennessey?

  Not even in broadcast news.

• 30:07Amanda Dobbins?

No, I mean, he's playing, he's well suited for that character, who you're supposed to kind of get.

• 30:13Speaker 03

You know why you don't get it?

• 30:14Amanda Dobbins?

Despite everything in front of him.

• 30:16Speaker 03

You know why you don't get it?

• 30:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Tell me.

• 30:17Speaker 03

So it was easier back then. Nobody had a cushier existence than us.

• 30:22Amanda Dobbins?

Zach says because I don't really like ballplayers. But, uh, yeah.

• 30:26Speaker 04

I'm doing big chill over here.

• 30:27Amanda Dobbins?

  That's what Zach said.

• 30:29Sean Fennessey?

  He's tall.

• 30:30Amanda Dobbins?

Well, we were talking about body heat, which obviously is still really good. But even there, I'm kind of like, you're kind of just like a sack of a man who doesn't know what to do with all this sweat. And I, and Zach said, well, because you've never been a ballplayer person. Anyway, I won't be choosing accidental tourist is not my passion pick.

• 30:48Speaker 04

  Not a great one.

• 30:49Sean Fennessey?

Bill Hurd, Bill Hurd was good. I mean, he was, he seemed like a complicated guy and had, you know, some, some ugly stuff about him. But he's a, he's a great actor.

• 30:57Speaker 04

  Love Bill Hurd.

• 30:58Sean Fennessey?

End of Violence, that's a great, remember that scene at the end?

• 31:00Speaker 04

  That one, right?

• 31:01Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, no, he's the brother.

• 31:02Speaker 04

Sierra, make a pick. Until the end of the world, he's blind.

• 31:05Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 31:05Speaker 04

I'm going to take Die Hard and Blockbuster.

• 31:06Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, thank you.

• 31:07Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 31:08Sean Fennessey?

Jeez Louise, had me worried for a second.

• 31:09Speaker 04

Really, for a long time, thought John McClane was the coolest person that had ever been born. The funniest guy, the guy who could bring down a, a ring of, of Germanic terrorists.

• 31:21Sean Fennessey?

And now you think it's Chris Long.

• 31:23Speaker 04

They steal our bearer bonds. bearer bonds, apparently, Bill, I don't know, you're doing research, but I've been told reliably that bearer bonds have, are way overrepresented in heist movies and that they're actually not a very, uh, popular way of transferring wealth.

• 31:38Speaker 03

I did that on the mailbag a couple weeks. Well, I did a, a different version of what you just said.

• 31:42Sean Fennessey?

  We did talk about this.

• 31:43Speaker 04

I got a DM about it.

• 31:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 31:44Speaker 04

Maybe this guy was just hitting us from all angles, but anyway.

• 31:46Speaker 03

  It's anti bearer bonds.

• 31:47Speaker 04

Um, I'm taking, I'm taking Die Hard. This was, uh, I did see this in movie theaters and this was like my, my identity for the year 1988. Aside from being a passionate Dukakis booster.

• 32:00Sean Fennessey?

Well, one of those didn't really work out very well. The other worked out great.

• 32:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:04Sean Fennessey?

  Do you feel?

• 32:04Speaker 04

Would you trade, if you could have a Michael Dukakis presidency, would you, would you trade it for Die Hard ever of having existed?

• 32:10Sean Fennessey?

  I was six.

• 32:11Speaker 04

  So what does that mean?

• 32:13Sean Fennessey?

I don't know. I'm not really sure ultimately, like what did we gain or lose during HW? You want to weigh in?

• 32:20Speaker 04

Bill could be flying back to the Michael Dukakis Airport in Boston right now.

• 32:24Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, good point.

• 32:26Speaker 04

  Oh, it's like that guy.

• 32:28Sean Fennessey?

  H. Dubbs?

• 32:30Speaker 04

  The Duke, right?

• 32:31Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:31Speaker 04

  The Duke.

• 32:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:32Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, the Duke, yeah.

• 32:33Speaker 03

  From Massachusetts.

• 32:34Sean Fennessey?

He was a Massachusetts guy, yeah. H. W., you know.

• 32:36Speaker 04

  He kinda got punked.

• 32:37Amanda Dobbins?

Mondale was the guy? And then that was his VP? Gave us.

• 32:39Sean Fennessey?

  Who was?

• 32:40Speaker 04

  Was it Mondale?

• 32:40Sean Fennessey?

  Mondale, yeah.

• 32:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 32:41Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 32:42Speaker 04

No, Mondale Ferraro was 84, right?

• 32:45Sean Fennessey?

  It was, oh, Stockdale.

• 32:48Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:48Sean Fennessey?

  Admiral Stockdale?

• 32:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:49Amanda Dobbins?

You guys wanted to vote at age, right?

• 32:51Sean Fennessey?

Was it Stockdale who, who, who ran with Dukakis?

• 32:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 32:54Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. And he was a stiff.

• 32:55Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 32:56Amanda Dobbins?

Was 88 your first presidential election that you voted in?

• 33:00Speaker 03

  I could have voted. I don't think I did.

• 33:03Speaker 04

Wait, you didn't vote for the Massachusetts guy?

• 33:06Speaker 03

I don't think I made it. I think I was probably seeing one of those movies.

• 33:08Speaker 04

  Jesus.

• 33:09Speaker 03

Yeah, I might have, might have voted. I don't remember.

• 33:11Amanda Dobbins?

  That's okay.

• 33:12Speaker 03

92, I was all in on my guy Bubba.

• 33:14Amanda Dobbins?

Okay, all right, well, sure, yeah.

• 33:16Speaker 03

  It was.

• 33:16Amanda Dobbins?

He liked McDonald's and the saxophone.

• 33:18Speaker 03

Identified him early in 91. I'm like, this guy.

• 33:20Speaker 04

  I think if I, if I'm.

• 33:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Town called Hope.

• 33:22Speaker 04

Just being, now, I'm not even gonna admit that. Before being really honest, I think I forgot to vote for Kerry. And I realized it, like, I was just like, everybody was like, did you vote? And I was like, yeah.

• 33:34Sean Fennessey?

And was that in Florida? You were living at the time, or?

• 33:37Speaker 04

Oh, no, we were in New York.

• 33:37Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, cool.

• 33:38Speaker 04

A lot of stuff going on.

• 33:40Sean Fennessey?

  Uh.

• 33:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay, Die Hard.

• 33:42Speaker 04

  The Strokes round.

• 33:44Sean Fennessey?

  You were busy, yeah.

• 33:45Amanda Dobbins?

You think the Strokes voted for Kerry? Uh, they definitely did not. Yeah, they don't.

• 33:49Speaker 03

So you took Die Hard and Blockbuster?

• 33:50Speaker 04

  I did.

• 33:52Speaker 04

  I didn't.

• 33:52Amanda Dobbins?

  John McClane.

• 33:53Speaker 04

  What about him?

• 33:55Amanda Dobbins?

Kind of annoying. I would be annoyed if he were my husband. That was what I thought of my rewatch.

• 33:59Speaker 03

Because he's trying to save you the whole time.

• 34:01Amanda Dobbins?

He does save me, but it's just like, you know, you gotta support my career and my career mobility. Also, it's Christmas Eve. Where is their child? Why is no one spending Christmas?

• 34:11Speaker 04

  The maid, right?

• 34:12Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, that's fine. It's not a Christmas movie. It's a divorce movie. And I, I think that Bonnie Bedelia had some points.

• 34:18Speaker 03

Should we have had it in divorce month?

• 34:20Speaker 04

I think she was really trolling him with by changing to Gennaro on the computer screen directory.

• 34:25Amanda Dobbins?

  It's Ms. Gennaro, okay?

• 34:27Sean Fennessey?

To divorce month. It wasn't divorce month.

• 34:29Speaker 03

It was fucked up family month.

• 34:30Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 34:31Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, well, I just, you know.

• 34:33Speaker 03

  Good point.

• 34:34Amanda Dobbins?

I've seen Die Hard Two, so I know how it turns out.

• 34:37Sean Fennessey?

First of all, yes, they reunite.

• 34:38Amanda Dobbins?

  I understand.

• 34:39Sean Fennessey?

Second of all, that was wonderful childcare that the McLean family had.

• 34:43Amanda Dobbins?

It is Christmas Eve. Also, who was throwing an office party on whatever?

• 34:47Speaker 04

  The Nakatomi Corporation, you know?

• 34:49Amanda Dobbins?

It's really, it's really good and I do this drive all the time to go see movies.

• 34:54Speaker 03

I'm gonna take Rain Man in the Oscar nominee category.

• 34:58Sean Fennessey?

  Fascinating, okay.

• 34:59Amanda Dobbins?

  All right.

• 34:59Speaker 03

The reason is, I don't love the Oscar nominee category.

• 35:02Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 35:03Speaker 03

This checks a lot of boxes. This was an awesome movie. I think it was incredibly impactful. Maybe the first movie I think of when I think of 1988.

• 35:14Speaker 03

Our guy Dusty, he got a trophy.

• 35:17Sean Fennessey?

  He did.

• 35:18Speaker 03

Barry Levinson, always liked his work. This is probably the most successful thing he did. Is that fair?

• 35:25Sean Fennessey?

Well, I think without question, his biggest movie.

• 35:28Speaker 03

But it was really for Cruise. This was the Tom Cruise is now here in my life for the next 30 years movie, right?

• 35:35Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 35:35Speaker 03

Top Gun, it's like, alright, cocky guy, like, this is good. Like, what else you got for us, Tom Cruise? And then this, the Charlie Babbitt character becomes Tom Cruise for the next eight years. Basically, he's just playing this over and over again.

• 35:50Speaker 03

It's a really good, it's a good date movie. It's a good watch with the family movie.

• 35:56Speaker 03

When he tilts his head and they touch heads in the end, if you don't get choked up on that, you don't have a heart. Even Sean gets choked up.

• 36:02Sean Fennessey?

  I like Rain Man.

• 36:04Speaker 03

The music's great and the Vegas scene is an all-timer and became one of those cultural things that when you went to Vegas and you saw the escalators, you thought of it, it's become running, there's a bunch of jokes that came out of this.

• 36:16Speaker 04

  Wagner.

• 36:17Speaker 03

We got, we got cultural stuff out of this. It's just, it's a home run movie.

• 36:20Sean Fennessey?

I think it's a legitimately great Cruise performance. We talked about it when we did it on the pod, but

• 36:25Speaker 03

we were saying he should have won.

• 36:27Sean Fennessey?

  He's the one.

• 36:27Speaker 03

  The harder part.

• 36:28Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, much harder part.

• 36:29Speaker 04

What's his job in Rain Man? He's like a car salesman?

• 36:32Sean Fennessey?

He sells high-end cars, right? Like, really nice sports cars.

• 36:35Speaker 03

It's also a good, like, for about 20 minutes, becomes an awesome LA movie.

• 36:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 36:41Speaker 03

He's living in somewhere in the hills somewhere. But yeah, I love this movie.

• 36:46Sean Fennessey?

  Is it?

• 36:47Speaker 04

An Italian lady, I can't remember her name.

• 36:48Sean Fennessey?

  It's Valeria Galino?

• 36:49Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 36:50Speaker 03

  Valer Galino.

• 36:50Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 36:51Speaker 03

Who, one of the many Benicio del Toro girlfriends.

• 36:54Speaker 04

  Oh, good for him.

• 36:55Sean Fennessey?

  Legendary stick man.

• 36:56Speaker 03

That guy. Alright, so that's my Oscar pick, so that's off the board.

• 37:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Fascinating pick.

• 37:02Speaker 03

I don't have to worry about that category now.

• 37:04Sean Fennessey?

You don't? That also is the highest grossing movie of the year.

• 37:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 37:08Sean Fennessey?

So that takes, so then we've lost two of the nine box office grocers.

• 37:14Sean Fennessey?

  Sheesh.

• 37:15Speaker 03

Yeah. It's part of my plan.

• 37:18Sean Fennessey?

  I think it's a good plan.

• 37:22Sean Fennessey?

I'm gonna, I'm not gonna stick it to you, but I am gonna make a strategic move.

• 37:27Speaker 03

  Oh, boy.

• 37:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Don't do it.

• 37:29Speaker 03

  Don't do it.

• 37:30Sean Fennessey?

No, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna do it.

• 37:32Amanda Dobbins?

You know what, actually, if you're gonna do it.

• 37:34Sean Fennessey?

I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna do it.

• 37:35Amanda Dobbins?

Do it with your whole heart.

• 37:36Sean Fennessey?

  I'm not, you don't.

• 37:36Amanda Dobbins?

And both balls, and like, stand up in the cabin, just go and do it.

• 37:39Sean Fennessey?

You have no idea what I'm gonna do.

• 37:40Speaker 03

  It's a personal attack.

• 37:41Sean Fennessey?

  You have no clue.

• 37:42Speaker 03

  It's a personal attack.

• 37:43Sean Fennessey?

First of all, I don't work that way. I don't live that way. I'm not that kind of man.

• 37:48Speaker 03

  Don't do it.

• 37:49Speaker 04

But you advocate, you like seeing it. You like seeing it in the wild when it happens.

• 37:53Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I like to get my rocks off by watching other people. When Rob Mahoney comes in this house and he takes something from Amanda, I like it.

• 37:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 37:59Sean Fennessey?

I enjoy it, I give it a heart, I fave it, I send it up to the cloud.

• 38:03Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 38:04Sean Fennessey?

  I say, thank you.

• 38:05Speaker 04

  Add it to your story.

• 38:06Sean Fennessey?

  That's not what I do.

• 38:07Speaker 04

So what are you gonna be picking?

• 38:08Sean Fennessey?

I'm gonna take Big, and I'm gonna take it in blockbuster.

• 38:11Speaker 04

Okay, everybody's, now, we're all friends.

• 38:14Amanda Dobbins?

That's fine. That's good. I would, I mean, I was actually going to do that with one of my two picks.

• 38:18Sean Fennessey?

I assumed it would be on the turn.

• 38:20Amanda Dobbins?

It's very smart, so, there you go.

• 38:22Sean Fennessey?

  Who doesn't like Big?

• 38:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Who doesn't love Big?

• 38:24Sean Fennessey?

  Big's great. It's a great film.

• 38:26Speaker 04

  Really sincere.

• 38:27Sean Fennessey?

  What do you mean?

• 38:28Speaker 04

You guys just like, gee, Thelma and Louise did, and you're like, right at the second it breaks.

• 38:33Amanda Dobbins?

  That's where people tune in.

• 38:36Sean Fennessey?

I think Big is, like, it's shocking that Big works. On paper, Big is, sounds terrible, and it's totally Tom Hanks, who carries the movie on his shoulders the entire time and makes you truly believe that he is a 10-year-old boy. And it was, it was probably a movie, probably one of the first grown-up movies that I ever saw, because it was on cable non-stop one year after it came out, almost certainly the first time I saw Hanks. And, an easy movie for a then seven or eight-year-old to get really into and learn about the world of being an adult. And- Jeff Chow is just showing us that his family is in New York today and that they were at FAO Schwartz dancing on the keys, you know, and it's like that is something in the culture that still exists and your boy Robert Loja is in that scene.

• 39:19Speaker 04

I was just gonna say Loja, I just watched him with the scene where Josh is like, well, this, this, this robot doesn't do anything, it just turns into a building. He's like, no, say more, Josh. What do you got for me? All these suits.

• 39:31Sean Fennessey?

He hates John Heard so much in that movie. It's incredible. I think this is a beautiful movie and very funny and very sincere and also quite weird. It's like he transforms into an adult because of a Zoltar. That's just very strange, but I love it. So that's my pick for blockbuster.

• 39:47Speaker 03

It's a classic. It's a timeless movie. And it's a movie that as soon as, how old is your oldest kid?

• 39:53Amanda Dobbins?

Four. So I can, I start to see a little bit of it now.

• 39:56Speaker 03

It could be like about, no, but you maybe like, maybe age six, you can actually watch that movie with your kids and feel good about it?

• 40:02Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but I just meant imagining him being lost in the adult world. And so he's like, what do I do now?

• 40:08Speaker 03

  But it's, you can really.

• 40:09Sean Fennessey?

Mom, what do I do with Elizabeth Montgomery?

• 40:11Speaker 03

  I would say it's.

• 40:12Sean Fennessey?

  Elizabeth Perkins, different wrong eighties.

• 40:14Speaker 03

I would say it's in the running for best parent kid movie. Like for parents to watch with kids.

• 40:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, nice.

• 40:21Speaker 03

  It's way up there.

• 40:21Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 40:22Speaker 03

And I think it's really timeless and there's an incredible amount of comedy in it that's developed over the years.

• 40:27Sean Fennessey?

  It's very funny.

• 40:27Speaker 03

With, uh, she's like, call me, call me in five years, whatever she says. Like, it gets like super creepy there for a second. It's really funny on the rewatches. Um, great movie. And she, I don't think she ever dated again.

• 40:40Speaker 04

  That woman.

• 40:41Speaker 03

Yeah. I don't think he bounced back. Years and years of therapy, you still don't really come back from that one.

• 40:46Sean Fennessey?

But do you think she, was that like the love of her life? Like she held a candle for 35 year old Josh?

• 40:56Speaker 03

I think that part of that, and then I think it's, am I a bad person?

• 41:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 41:00Speaker 03

What did that say about me? And then it's all of her friends being like, so wait, what happened? And I just think it's.

• 41:08Speaker 04

She's like taking him to the Zoltar machine. Like, no, no, you try it. It's crazy.

• 41:12Speaker 03

She shows up at his high school graduation after escort her out. I think it goes really

• 41:16Sean Fennessey?

And Mary Kay Letourneau, May-December situation, right?

• 41:19Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 41:19Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, like maybe she swooped in.

• 41:20Speaker 03

  I think it goes dark.

• 41:21Sean Fennessey?

  Okay. That's unfortunate.

• 41:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Good luck to her.

• 41:23Speaker 03

All right, well, we know what a man is gonna take.

• 41:24Amanda Dobbins?

Yes, I have two picks. The first, in comedy, I will take my passion pick, Working Girl, directed by Mike Nichols, starring Melanie Griffith, Harrison Ford, Sigourney Weaver, Joan Cusack. Bill and I got to do a whole rewatchables about this, which was one of the great days of my professional life.

• 41:42Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 41:43Amanda Dobbins?

This is probably top five rom-coms for me.

• 41:46Sean Fennessey?

  All time.

• 41:47Amanda Dobbins?

  I think so.

• 41:48Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 41:49Amanda Dobbins?

You know, the list changes. It's a, it's a living document, much like myself. And it's also not a traditional romantic comedy in the sense that it's as much about her professional pursuits as it is about Harrison Ford. And it does the nice thing where it's number one, the hottest Harrison Ford has ever been. And number two, he just shows up to be like a charming hunk of meat. And I really like it when people as famous as Harrison Ford, men specifically, just show up to, you know, be shirtless in the one scene changing their shirt in the office. Just an amazing movie. And I'm not gonna sing the Carly Simon

• 42:30Amanda Dobbins?

song, but you know, one of the great credit sequences and great Oscar wins. Really, really important stuff. So I have another one. And this is where, another pick, I was gonna do big in box office. I probably should strategically do box office because that is getting thin. And, okay, so I will do Coming to America.

• 42:55Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 42:56Amanda Dobbins?

  In box office.

• 42:57Speaker 03

  Good pick.

• 42:57Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, which is, you know, also eligible in comedy, and I think maybe an Oscar nominee.

• 43:03Sean Fennessey?

  It is.

• 43:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Below the line.

• 43:04Sean Fennessey?

  Best costumes.

• 43:05Amanda Dobbins?

So I needed to get it off the board. Yeah, so I think that I didn't see Coming to America in theaters in 1988. I was too small. But I think I just saw all the Eddie Murphy movies, like in a, in a month's stretch when I was maybe 10 or 11 or something. I just sat down one weekend or one month and was like, oh, this is Eddie Murphy. This is what I, you know, have been hearing about.

• 43:32Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 43:32Amanda Dobbins?

Um, or, you know, like seeing and like not commercials, but just kind of pop culture. Like he was a figure, but I'd never seen any of the stuff. Um, he's very funny. I mean, this, this movie is very funny.

• 43:44Sean Fennessey?

I think you're not going to agree with this, but I think his best movie, end to end, for me, obviously.

• 43:53Speaker 03

It's, it's a take his corners back movie.

• 43:55Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 43:56Speaker 03

After Golden Child, which was kind of a mess. I still like it because it was Eddie Murphy, but kind of, he kind of needed this one.

• 44:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 44:02Speaker 03

And it was like, this is going to be a big movie. Nobody knew who Arsonia was. Um, he had an accent. There were a lot of red flags and then it ended up being what it was.

• 44:10Speaker 04

It's got like five or six.

• 44:11Speaker 03

It was just cry out loud funny scenes. It's like, you know, and I think that movie still has legs and exists.

• 44:18Sean Fennessey?

  It holds up.

• 44:18Amanda Dobbins?

It does. I, I rewatched it before Coming to America two, which was not as funny.

• 44:23Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 44:23Speaker 03

We don't acknowledge Coming to America.

• 44:25Amanda Dobbins?

But it is still really funny and I had the experience prepping for this, some other comedies that I rewatched and I remember like weeping, laughing. And I just, I didn't laugh once. And so not all comedy ages, as we've learned, not in the like, you know, politically correct sense, but just in the, does it make you laugh?

• 44:41Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 44:41Amanda Dobbins?

Coming to America still makes you laugh.

• 44:43Speaker 03

And like a gentle, just happy hang.

• 44:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 44:46Sean Fennessey?

There's something about the innocence of the prince and everything in Zomunda is so funny.

• 44:52Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 44:53Sean Fennessey?

So specific. Um, yeah, it's a, it's like kind of a miraculous movie. Like I, for you, I know 48 Hours is, is one of your faves in Beverly Hills Cop. Like, where does this one sit?

• 45:04Speaker 03

I think Cops is best, probably his best like performance in a movie because he just carries it. Trading Places, I still feel like is his best movie.

• 45:11Speaker 04

  It's the funniest.

• 45:12Speaker 03

And Coming to America is probably the one that's going to last the longest.

• 45:15Sean Fennessey?

  Mm hmm.

• 45:15Speaker 03

Um, because it just, it just keeps going.

• 45:18Speaker 04

And 48 Hours is like the punk rock debut where you're like, I can't believe this is happening. Watch this.

• 45:23Speaker 03

  Fuck yeah, CR.

• 45:25Speaker 04

And then another forty eight hours is maybe like they're like, hey, he can still play guitar.

• 45:32Speaker 03

Well, the other thing, John Amos being in this movie was a big deal in nineteen eighty eight. That like their stuff that hasn't held up. Cause he was the dad from Good Times. That was a huge, huge show. And it was like, hey, it's John. Like it just, they felt like they stacked the deck a little bit with how they did it. And it was completely satisfying. I was worried that they might F it up. They did not.

• 45:52Speaker 04

I think, I think we watched in my like neighborhood, we would just get the tape and watch the barber shop scene over and over and over again.

• 45:59Speaker 03

That's the other thing. And that was the first time he really did that in a movie.

• 46:02Sean Fennessey?

  The multiple characters.

• 46:03Speaker 03

We didn't, it's not like we had like a ton of info about these movies. So it was like, isn't that, wasn't Eddie in that's like in every?

• 46:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 46:10Speaker 03

Like we just, you didn't know in the same way.

• 46:11Sean Fennessey?

He talked about it in the Netflix doc that he did, where he was like, he would just show up on set and just trick people. Like they just didn't even know. They're like, when's Eddie arriving? And he was like, I don't know where he is.

• 46:24Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 46:24Speaker 03

  Big pick for you.

• 46:27Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. I mean, look, obviously I really want to take Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but I don't really feel like you guys give a shit about it. So it doesn't really make a ton of sense.

• 46:33Speaker 03

But that's the thing is that like. I will absolutely spite pick it if you don't take it.

• 46:37Sean Fennessey?

  Would you really?

• 46:37Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 46:38Speaker 04

Well, now he's tricked you into doing it.

• 46:40Sean Fennessey?

  Why would you do that?

• 46:41Speaker 03

Uh, he's gonna, don't, don't think you can save it for later.

• 46:44Speaker 04

  Fuck, kill me here.

• 46:44Sean Fennessey?

That's not very nice. I invite you here. I invite you in my house.

• 46:49Speaker 03

No, I'm not gonna take it next.

• 46:52Sean Fennessey?

There's two huge, huge movies for me this year.

• 46:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 46:55Sean Fennessey?

Um, and I haven't taken them, either one of them yet. And I'll, I'll, I will just take Who Framed Roger Rabbit and I'll risk it.

• 47:03Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 47:03Sean Fennessey?

Because it feels like the most emotionally correct thing for me to do.

• 47:06Speaker 04

  Good.

• 47:07Amanda Dobbins?

  That's beautiful.

• 47:08Sean Fennessey?

  We just.

• 47:09Speaker 03

  I'm gonna fuckin' kill you.

• 47:10Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 47:10Speaker 03

  Good, I'm happy for you.

• 47:13Speaker 04

And if you don't make it any further, that's okay too.

• 47:16Sean Fennessey?

I heard that. Someone texted me. It was like, do not listen to the mailbag. They're rewatchables. And I was like, why? And they were like, well, some, some notes for you in there.

• 47:24Speaker 03

Oh, it was all out of love.

• 47:25Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, sure. Sure it was.

• 47:27Speaker 03

  It was great.

• 47:28Sean Fennessey?

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Saw it nineteen eighty eight, cooked my noodle, just changed my absolute brain for what I thought a movie. Could be and what it should be. I didn't know any of the reference points to 40s detective movies. I didn't really understand the idea of blending these two worlds. I knew everything about all the cartoon characters in the movies. Certainly never seen Bob Hoskins before. I think Bill's point about Jessica Rabbit is probably true. That she imprinted on me a cartoon babe.

• 47:52Speaker 03

  No question.

• 47:53Sean Fennessey?

  Red hair.

• 47:53Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 47:54Sean Fennessey?

  And.

• 47:54Speaker 03

That's how I felt about all of Charlie's Angels and this and the buying equipment.

• 47:57Sean Fennessey?

  That stuff is real.

• 47:59Speaker 04

Except those were actual human beings and not a drawing.

• 48:02Amanda Dobbins?

Figure out who, I guess mine was Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing and Ghost.

• 48:06Sean Fennessey?

  We both got it.

• 48:07Amanda Dobbins?

Just like, oh, something interesting is here and.

• 48:10Speaker 03

  Same for me.

• 48:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 48:13Sean Fennessey?

And you know Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Like, an insane technical achievement. Nominated for six Academy Awards. It won a bunch of Oscars. It was a huge hit. It would have been the biggest hit of the year if Rain Man didn't win Best Picture. It's Zemeckis in the absolute center of his greatness, like right after Back to the Future movies. And it like, it is a little bit of a cynical thing where it was like, what if we put Donald Duck and Daffy Duck in a movie together? But the movie doesn't feel that way. It feels like pretty sharp and smart. It's kind of like a soft Chinatown remake. It's this. We talked about L.A. Confidential on the rewatchables coming up next week. There's a lot in common with it there. When you go back to the actual, like, serious adult movies I like, there's a lot of Who Framed Roger Rabbit stuff that probably was seeded originally there. So.

• 48:58Speaker 04

  What category, Sean?

• 49:00Sean Fennessey?

  Let's do it.

• 49:03Sean Fennessey?

  In Oscar nominee.

• 49:09Speaker 03

  Interesting. Okay.

• 49:13Speaker 03

Well, CR thought he might get one of these two movies coming down the pike. And I have two words for you. Shut the fuck up because I'm taking midnight run.

• 49:22Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 49:23Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 49:23Speaker 03

  As a comedy.

• 49:24Amanda Dobbins?

  That was.

• 49:25Speaker 03

  Taken off the board.

• 49:26Amanda Dobbins?

  That was a direct.

• 49:27Speaker 03

It had to be on my team.

• 49:29Speaker 04

Sure. I mean, I, I, this is what I was worried about is I was gonna have to take it first or I wasn't gonna get it.

• 49:35Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 49:36Sean Fennessey?

I'm surprised it lasted this long, given the company.

• 49:39Speaker 03

Excited and delighted. It's probably gonna cost me at least two other movies I really like, but this is my favorite dinner movie and performance ever.

• 49:49Speaker 03

This movie was an absolute delight in the theater. It crushed. It's like among the hardest. I've seen people laugh in a theater.

• 49:57Speaker 03

  It holds up. Iconic rodent.

• 50:00Amanda Dobbins?

  All time rodent.

• 50:00Speaker 03

More lines than I think any adult comedy ever. Just every scene has lines. It's still hilarious.

• 50:10Speaker 03

Couple emotional scenes. He goes to see the wife.

• 50:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 50:13Speaker 03

Brings the Duke back to his car, make sure he doesn't close the door on his coat.

• 50:17Amanda Dobbins?

  The money belt.

• 50:17Speaker 03

The money belt. It's just, the soundtrack's great. There's stuff I pulled out of it for my own life where it's like, I've come too far. I've come too fucking far.

• 50:27Sean Fennessey?

  What'd he said to Skipper?

• 50:29Speaker 03

  Too far.

• 50:32Speaker 03

I just, I just love this movie.

• 50:33Speaker 04

One of the great Joey Pants roles.

• 50:35Speaker 03

It's all these that guys, I better go get some donuts, that guy.

• 50:41Speaker 03

And, and I think it's, it's weird because Die Hard is like, starts this whole genre, right? That people just ripped off. And I think Midnight Run is probably the movie people have tried to make. And failed.

• 50:52Speaker 04

  Their version of the most.

• 50:53Speaker 03

And they fail every time. I don't think anyone's ever really pulled up.

• 50:56Speaker 04

Nice Guys, how hard it is to do something like this.

• 50:58Speaker 03

Yeah. The Nice Guys is probably one of the ones that got the closest.

• 51:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 51:00Speaker 03

But like, how do we just have like, smart, funny, good structure, great lines back and forth? Like genuinely funny stuff and everybody fucks it up.

• 51:08Speaker 04

Two lovable characters who just motherfuck each other for an hour and 58 minutes? And then like, look at each other in the eye and like, I love you at the end. It is just like a perfect recipe.

• 51:17Speaker 03

De Niro's so good in this movie.

• 51:22Speaker 03

When he's sitting in the bus and he's like, why do you, he's killing him on the smoking? And he's just killing him. And De Niro's like, I just, you can't hear. Like you just see the life leaving his body. Why aren't you popular in the Chicago Police Department? And he's just like fucking killing him. It's great.

• 51:38Amanda Dobbins?

I realized I'm old because when I rewatched part of it for this, I was like, oh, De Niro looks really good in this.

• 51:43Speaker 03

  He does.

• 51:44Amanda Dobbins?

Still like, I know that's because now I'm in the same age bracket and I'm just like, wow, De Niro is still good.

• 51:49Speaker 03

It's honestly like watching a basketball player play football or something. It doesn't make sense that he's this good at comedy.

• 51:54Speaker 04

He's doing stuff and this is like Tom Cruise.

• 51:56Sean Fennessey?

Totally changes his career. Yeah. It totally opened up a whole new lane of movie that he could be in. And he's spent more time making those movies in the last 25 years than he did making the movies he got known for.

• 52:03Speaker 03

So that was part of the fun was going to the theater and be like, De Niro's in, this seems like it's like a comedy. Really? De Niro's in it? And then he was great. This movie's great.

• 52:13Sean Fennessey?

  Do you own the 4K?

• 52:15Speaker 03

  Of course. I do.

• 52:17Sean Fennessey?

  It's great.

• 52:18Speaker 03

No, what's happened to me with the 4Ks is as you've predicted.

• 52:21Speaker 04

  It's getting out of control.

• 52:22Amanda Dobbins?

  You've gone nuts.

• 52:23Speaker 03

Well, it's like groups having a 50% off sale. I'm like, ah, fuck. I don't even know if I'll ever watch this, but I can't believe that's only 13.99.

• 52:33Amanda Dobbins?

Storage and display strategy right now.

• 52:35Speaker 03

It's one giant tower that I am about to have to get a second one.

• 52:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 52:39Speaker 03

Just for Cruising, though. I need to, I have 100 copies of Cruising.

• 52:43Sean Fennessey?

  That's good. Unopened, though.

• 52:44Speaker 03

Unopened. I just, I like to collect.

• 52:46Speaker 04

And then one that's really open.

• 52:47Speaker 03

I'm trying to short the market on Cruising so nobody else can have it.

• 52:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 52:50Speaker 03

And then they'll all be worth more. Has anyone tried that yet?

• 52:55Sean Fennessey?

  How's your collection going?

• 52:57Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I have that Bring It On 4K that you gave me.

• 52:59Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 53:00Amanda Dobbins?

  That for my birthday.

• 53:01Sean Fennessey?

  Doesn't have a 4K player.

• 53:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Listen, I just, I'm, no, you're right. I don't. I just have a Blu-ray.

• 53:05Speaker 03

Here's where it really, not to, not to just cater to Sean here.

• 53:09Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 53:10Speaker 03

With the 70s and 80s movies, it really does make a difference.

• 53:13Sean Fennessey?

  It does.

• 53:14Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I totally believe it.

• 53:15Speaker 03

I'm actually surprised. Like, I think with more modern movies, maybe not as much, but when you're going back, like when we did To Live and Die in L.A., like, what it did to that movie where I could, was able to see William Peterson's genitalia.

• 53:27Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, that was exciting.

• 53:28Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 53:28Speaker 03

It was just like, I just was never able to really see it.

• 53:31Speaker 04

  That's why film preservation matters.

• 53:32Sean Fennessey?

  That's right.

• 53:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 53:33Sean Fennessey?

  For dong shots.

• 53:35Speaker 03

  For hanging dong.

• 53:36Amanda Dobbins?

This is the angle that you mess with me.

• 53:38Speaker 04

For two decades, VHS obscured this man.

• 53:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Now I'm paying attention.

• 53:41Sean Fennessey?

You might want to look into that, you know?

• 53:42Speaker 03

Because those 70s, 80s movies, a lot of times they're filmed dark.

• 53:45Sean Fennessey?

I mean, you could only watch To Live and Die in L.A. and Pan and Scan on TV for years. There was no other way to see it.

• 53:50Speaker 03

  It's such an important point.

• 53:52Sean Fennessey?

So, yeah, I'm glad you've totally come around.

• 53:55Speaker 03

  No, I'm fine.

• 53:56Sean Fennessey?

You've got two picks here, bud.

• 53:56Speaker 04

It's really, I know what I'm gonna pick. It's just about categories.

• 53:59Sean Fennessey?

Have you taken a mortal wound by losing Midnight Run?

• 54:01Speaker 04

It's more of a heart shot, you know?

• 54:04Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, but you will live.

• 54:05Amanda Dobbins?

  That hurts.

• 54:05Speaker 04

  But I'm gonna live.

• 54:06Sean Fennessey?

  You'll be like Dark Man.

• 54:07Speaker 03

I thought you were gonna take it first.

• 54:09Amanda Dobbins?

That was, that was the thought. And that was in my head. I thought that was his passion project. You're still a mystery. We don't know what yours is.

• 54:15Sean Fennessey?

I was thinking Die Hard all the way. You've always been a Die Hard boy to me.

• 54:19Speaker 04

This is the first pick problem. And I also am not enamored with our blockbusters, particularly. So, um, in.

• 54:29Speaker 04

Comedy. I'm gonna take Bull Durham.

• 54:32Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 54:32Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 54:33Speaker 03

  Yep.

• 54:34Speaker 04

Which is, uh, one of my most viewed movies, most rewatched movies probably in my life. Happy opening day, week to everybody who observes.

• 54:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, yeah.

• 54:44Speaker 04

  Um.

• 54:45Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 54:45Speaker 04

The Church of Baseball is open.

• 54:46Sean Fennessey?

Phil, can we just do, just, just win total predictions for our teams?

• 54:52Speaker 04

  Right now for Amanda?

• 54:54Sean Fennessey?

Well, Amanda is also an avid baseball fan.

• 54:56Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, and now a T-ball mom.

• 54:57Sean Fennessey?

  A bit of a turncoat and a T-ball mom.

• 54:59Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 54:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 55:00Speaker 03

  T-ball gets dark.

• 55:01Sean Fennessey?

  Phil's time wins.

• 55:04Speaker 04

  Eighty-nine.

• 55:05Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 55:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 55:06Sean Fennessey?

Now, are you predicting Braves or Dodgers?

• 55:08Amanda Dobbins?

I have renounced the Braves. I have said this on the Big Picture Podcast many times.

• 55:13Sean Fennessey?

You said you're a Guardians fan?

• 55:14Amanda Dobbins?

  I renounced the Braves.

• 55:15Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, Tigers?

• 55:16Amanda Dobbins?

I live with a Phillies fan. I work with a Mets fan. It's not worth it to me, okay? I was there in the nineties. I experienced the glory and now, and they left Fulton County and so did I. So I say goodbye.

• 55:28Sean Fennessey?

  As always, fuck the Braves.

• 55:29Speaker 04

  Fuck them.

• 55:30Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 55:30Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 55:31Speaker 03

  Tom Hogg chap.

• 55:32Speaker 04

So you're, would you say you're a Dodgers fan, kind of?

• 55:35Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, I do like, I would like to go to Dodger Stadium this year. I, I, it's fun. I'd like to take my son. I like watching games, but I have, I'm like, I've cozied up to the Phillies.

• 55:46Speaker 04

  Thank you.

• 55:46Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 55:46Sean Fennessey?

  So no prediction from you?

• 55:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 55:48Sean Fennessey?

  Um, Sox.

• 55:49Speaker 04

  Eighty-nine for the Red Sox.

• 55:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh.

• 55:50Speaker 04

  Eighty-nine, seventy-three.

• 55:52Sean Fennessey?

  Eighty-nine and eighty-nine.

• 55:53Speaker 04

It's a tough division for you.

• 55:54Sean Fennessey?

I'm, I'm going ninety-one for the Mets this year. I'm feeling pretty good. Jack, is that too high?

• 55:59Speaker 05

I think their line is eighty-nine and a half, so that seems about right.

• 56:02Sean Fennessey?

  Is it really?

• 56:02Speaker 05

I think we swapped places though.

• 56:04Sean Fennessey?

  Well, it went over.

• 56:05Speaker 03

  Just right down the middle.

• 56:06Sean Fennessey?

  Went over.

• 56:06Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 56:07Speaker 04

  Eighty-nine.

• 56:08Sean Fennessey?

I didn't say my prediction is eighty-nine and a half.

• 56:10Amanda Dobbins?

Do you think that it will be an emotionally stable season for you?

• 56:13Sean Fennessey?

  It never is.

• 56:14Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. Where are we right now? Like, just on the, on the, like, green to red.

• 56:19Speaker 04

He's full of hope and dreams right now.

• 56:22Sean Fennessey?

We're crushing right now. One battle, best picture, movies are back.

• 56:25Amanda Dobbins?

No, I didn't, I didn't mean your emotional state. I just meant the Mets.

• 56:28Sean Fennessey?

Well, we got through spring training with almost no injuries, give or take a Mike Talkman. We're doing great.

• 56:33Amanda Dobbins?

  All right.

• 56:34Sean Fennessey?

  Am I wrong?

• 56:35Speaker 05

We've swapped places. I'm protecting myself.

• 56:38Amanda Dobbins?

Does, do you still have a pitcher last name Dobbins on the Red Sox?

• 56:42Sean Fennessey?

  He was traded.

• 56:43Speaker 05

No, he got rid of him. Yeah, sorry.

• 56:45Sean Fennessey?

Where did they trade Hunter Dobbins?

• 56:45Amanda Dobbins?

My first game at Fenway, I got a Dobbins game.

• 56:48Speaker 03

I think he went somewhere in the American League. I can't remember.

• 56:50Sean Fennessey?

What did you guys trade for in the offseason?

• 56:52Speaker 05

  St. Louis Cardinals, C-Now players.

• 56:53Speaker 03

  Wasn't a great offseason.

• 56:55Speaker 04

You guys got one of our guys. You got Ranger.

• 56:57Speaker 03

Yeah, we got Ranger Suarez and Contreras. It's not, I'm not telling my grandkids about the offseason.

• 57:06Speaker 03

Yeah, it was more like guys coming, young guys.

• 57:08Speaker 04

Didn't Roman get struck out to lose the WBC?

• 57:11Speaker 03

  He did.

• 57:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 57:11Speaker 03

  He did.

• 57:12Sean Fennessey?

That wasn't ideal. I blame Aaron Judge.

• 57:14Speaker 03

And our guy gave up the winning run.

• 57:16Sean Fennessey?

No, he hit a huge homerun. He hit a game tying homerun in the final.

• 57:20Amanda Dobbins?

You were talking a big game about how he did nothing.

• 57:22Sean Fennessey?

Well, up until that moment. He had done nothing up until that point, but he, as I've said many times, the scariest person in Major League Baseball is Bryce Harper. And in the biggest spot imaginable, hit a fucking tank.

• 57:31Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 57:32Sean Fennessey?

  To tie the game.

• 57:33Speaker 04

Also him, like, the whole Dombrowski says he's not elite. Now he's like, I will fucking destroy you is like the best motivation.

• 57:40Amanda Dobbins?

I don't want to know who he voted for, but otherwise it's great.

• 57:42Sean Fennessey?

I think he voted for raw milk.

• 57:44Speaker 04

He voted for Dukakis. He's like, Dukakis is still running, right?

• 57:49Speaker 03

  With Bull Durham, thought?

• 57:52Speaker 04

An absolutely note perfect movie that still plays.

• 57:56Speaker 04

It's almost like the second half of it or like the last third of it, I say as a drama with Crash wandering around North Carolina barrooms. But it's so fucking funny when Nuke is on the team and they're on the bus and they're doing, doing all the stuff with the rain delays and talking about the show. And really like a very like formative, like relationship movie where I watched it and I was like, is that what adult relationships are like?

• 58:22Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm. Yeah.

• 58:23Speaker 04

Do you eat Wheaties in a woman's Komodo? Can I look forward to that?

• 58:27Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. How did it shake out?

• 58:28Speaker 04

  Never happened.

• 58:28Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 58:29Speaker 04

But I always thought it would be hot if I could do that.

• 58:31Amanda Dobbins?

  It's not too late.

• 58:32Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 58:33Speaker 03

Important costume movie too, where like what I said earlier about some people like cementing that I'm here now. And I feel like even though he had other hits, this was the one.

• 58:42Amanda Dobbins?

  That speech.

• 58:43Speaker 03

This is the one where it's like this guy's now one of the biggest stars.

• 58:45Speaker 04

Yeah, he's ironing in his boxers.

• 58:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 58:47Amanda Dobbins?

That's all. This is a ball player, I accept, by the way.

• 58:50Sean Fennessey?

Did you have a movie in 89 before Dances with Wolves?

• 58:52Speaker 03

It was Revenge was around there somewhere.

• 58:55Sean Fennessey?

  Maybe that was it.

• 58:56Speaker 03

But then, uh, No Way Out was 87, Untouchables.

• 58:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Field of Dreams is 89.

• 59:00Sean Fennessey?

  That's what it is.

• 59:01Speaker 04

  Yeah, Baseball Baseball.

• 59:02Sean Fennessey?

  That's what it is.

• 59:03Speaker 04

  Uh, in Oscar.

• 59:05Sean Fennessey?

  That's an insane run.

• 59:06Speaker 04

  Nominations, nominees.

• 59:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Hmm.

• 59:08Speaker 04

I'll take Married to the Mob.

• 59:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Damn it.

• 59:11Speaker 04

So Dean Stockwell nominated for best supporting role.

• 59:13Sean Fennessey?

  It's a blow.

• 59:14Speaker 04

He's Tony, right? Uh, god damn it, Michelle Pfeiffer is fucking throwing 101 in this movie.

• 59:19Amanda Dobbins?

  So good.

• 59:20Speaker 03

You mean in 2026, in The Madison? It's great.

• 59:25Sean Fennessey?

How's it going? You been watching The Madison?

• 59:27Amanda Dobbins?

  What is The Madison?

• 59:28Speaker 03

What are you talking about? Of course I'm watching.

• 59:30Amanda Dobbins?

  I saw the sauna review.

• 59:31Speaker 03

I support all the, all, all Pfeiffer content.

• 59:34Amanda Dobbins?

What is, is The Madison like a boutique hotel?

• 59:37Speaker 04

  No.

• 59:37Amanda Dobbins?

Is it a ranch? Like, what is it?

• 59:39Speaker 03

No, she moves to Montana, Idaho, Montana.

• 59:43Speaker 04

  Uh, Idaho, I think.

• 59:44Speaker 03

  Idaho.

• 59:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, Madison County?

• 59:46Speaker 03

She's in the, has a ranch.

• 59:47Amanda Dobbins?

  The bridges of?

• 59:48Speaker 03

There's a family tragedy and she has, comes to grip.

• 59:51Amanda Dobbins?

  I bet is.

• 59:52Speaker 03

Amanda, you would love it. She just has, she just is sad and drinking like, like the biggest glasses of wine.

• 59:58Amanda Dobbins?

  I do like that.

• 59:59Speaker 04

  With her mean daughters.

• 1:00:00Amanda Dobbins?

  I'm mixed.

• 1:00:01Speaker 03

Even my wife was like, that pour is really large.

• 1:00:03Sean Fennessey?

  Did you create this show?

• 1:00:04Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:05Amanda Dobbins?

Well, you know me and the, the American West. Like when I went to Montana, I was a little freaked out by the landscape.

• 1:00:10Speaker 04

  She is too.

• 1:00:10Amanda Dobbins?

I don't know where to hide.

• 1:00:11Speaker 04

But then she goes back to New York and she's like, this isn't my home anymore.

• 1:00:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh.

• 1:00:14Speaker 03

  It's a home run.

• 1:00:15Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:00:15Speaker 03

It's, you don't have to totally watch it as you're watching. It's one of those. You can do emails.

• 1:00:19Sean Fennessey?

That's how you know it's a home run. You can write emails while watching.

• 1:00:22Speaker 03

Well, you can turn your brain off.

• 1:00:23Amanda Dobbins?

I gotta finish Love Story. I'm behind and then.

• 1:00:26Speaker 03

  You're not missing much there.

• 1:00:27Amanda Dobbins?

No, I mean, I know what happens. I was there for that.

• 1:00:30Speaker 03

So I don't love this movie, so make the case for it.

• 1:00:33Speaker 04

Um, I think it's just got that. Incredible screwball, like almost classic screwball sensibility that still is updated for like a modern, modern times. Uh, what don't you like about it?

• 1:00:44Speaker 03

I don't, either way, I just haven't seen it in a while. I remember thinking it was fine.

• 1:00:48Speaker 04

Do you feel like it's kind of like My Blue Heaven where it's like people pretending to be gangsters, but you liked watching real gangster movies?

• 1:00:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:00:53Speaker 04

Cause that sometimes is a, a feeling people have about, you know, if it's not like a real like Goodfellas, like mafia movie, it's not that funny.

• 1:01:00Speaker 03

Yeah, it's fine. I always support my, my lady Michelle.

• 1:01:04Sean Fennessey?

I, it gets to a lot of things before Goodfellas. There are a lot of aspects of this movie that it kind of, kind of precedes in a pretty specific way. One of the great Long Island movies, really one of the best representations. First 45 minutes all take place in Long Island and just like the kind of suburban paradise.

• 1:01:20Speaker 04

  Baldwin is unbelievable.

• 1:01:22Sean Fennessey?

So, so funny and very charming and handsome at that stage of his career, but like just there's, there was always one family.

• 1:01:30Sean Fennessey?

Where you're like, what does that guy's dad do for a living?

• 1:01:31Speaker 04

  Yeah, he's construction, huh?

• 1:01:32Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. And he's really slick and he's wearing a suit. Why is he wearing a black suit on a Wednesday? He doesn't go to an office. And the movie's just bang on about that. And it's really funny when she moves into the city too. And she goes to Chicken Licken and Chicken Licken, by the way, brought back in the battle after another. There's a, I, I think it's a great, great movie.

• 1:01:51Speaker 03

  I'll revisit.

• 1:01:52Speaker 04

He does, uh, the run where he basically like does something wild this and, and then silence is such a great. And also really three wonderful female performances. Best.

• 1:02:04Amanda Dobbins?

I was gonna say, the TV's role we need to talk about also.

• 1:02:07Speaker 03

  Silence is hilarious in there.

• 1:02:07Speaker 04

She's the funniest of the three. Yeah, it's absolute cut up.

• 1:02:11Sean Fennessey?

She a big fat person? You know, it's only a comedy to you guys, but it's very funny.

• 1:02:16Speaker 04

Will you, will you do your next pick?

• 1:02:18Speaker 03

Meeks wasn't the funniest character of 1990?

• 1:02:21Sean Fennessey?

He's up there. He's up there.

• 1:02:22Speaker 03

  I'm up now?

• 1:02:23Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:02:25Speaker 03

I mean, I can't believe it came back to me. Cocktail. This is a miracle.

• 1:02:29Sean Fennessey?

  Huge.

• 1:02:29Speaker 03

  Uh, blockbuster.

• 1:02:31Sean Fennessey?

Do you think you convinced a generation of mostly men to love this film? Like a generation below you?

• 1:02:38Speaker 03

You did the rewatchables with me because you love it too.

• 1:02:40Sean Fennessey?

  That's my point.

• 1:02:41Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:02:41Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I got into the movie because of you.

• 1:02:44Amanda Dobbins?

I, to me, this is the most, this is a top five bill movie.

• 1:02:48Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:02:48Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:02:48Speaker 03

  Thank you.

• 1:02:49Sean Fennessey?

  I would not have.

• 1:02:50Amanda Dobbins?

Do you want to know the other four?

• 1:02:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:02:52Amanda Dobbins?

The other one, Limitless, number sixteen, but also number two.

• 1:02:55Speaker 03

  Classic.

• 1:02:56Amanda Dobbins?

Um, Devil Wears Prada, now, you and me. And then what else do I?

• 1:03:00Speaker 03

  That's everyone's movie, though.

• 1:03:01Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, no, it's true. Um.

• 1:03:03Speaker 03

You don't have enough bad action in this list.

• 1:03:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Bad action?

• 1:03:06Speaker 03

Yeah, like you gotta go into dip into the Seagal Stallone area for me.

• 1:03:10Sean Fennessey?

You might be able to do that on this pod.

• 1:03:12Speaker 03

  He's either.

• 1:03:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:03:14Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:03:14Amanda Dobbins?

But I'm trying to think, no.

• 1:03:15Sean Fennessey?

This year has the one good Seagal movie, in my opinion.

• 1:03:17Speaker 03

So one of my favorite things in any movie is when somebody treats the movie like this is the most important movie of their life, but it's a movie like Cocktail. Cruise is all in. We talked about this when we did the rewatchables about it. He's completely committed. He's treating this like he's doing Eyes Wide Show with Kubrick in London for three years. He learns how to flip bottles.

• 1:03:40Speaker 04

He learns how to shoot baskets.

• 1:03:41Speaker 03

Yeah. Every scene, he's, he's just full tilt. He's crying, he's, he's just doing pratfalls. He's trying to be sexy Cruise. He's playing all the hits. It's like, watch, I said when we did the pod, I think it's like watching an NBA player, an NBA star on a bad team just carry them.

• 1:04:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:04:00Speaker 03

To like forty eight wins, just literally by himself. This movie should not have worked. It's a great hang. It's on, still on the streamers all the time. I feel like it hasn't died at all. It's got A Great Elizabeth shoe. Brian Baran with The Coglin's Law. Kelly Lynch is in it.

• 1:04:15Speaker 04

  Kelly Lynch is in it.

• 1:04:16Sean Fennessey?

  String bikini, yeah.

• 1:04:18Speaker 03

You get to go to Jamaica just randomly halfway through the movie for twenty minutes. That's really fun.

• 1:04:23Sean Fennessey?

The showdown at the beginning in the big bar with the overhead shots where they're doing the competition. And it's like, this is a sports movie. This is like, we're watching Boosers right now is crazy stuff.

• 1:04:32Speaker 04

Do you think anybody, we, I think we talked about this on rewatchables, but now that we're back from COVID, do, is, does anybody do acrobatic bartending? Or is it all like, I've put one leaf of basil?

• 1:04:42Sean Fennessey?

  It's more mustache guys.

• 1:04:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:04:43Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:04:44Speaker 03

This is another movie that they've tried. To kind of steal and make again, like Coyote Ugly, like movies like that where they're like, let's make campy and you can't do it, you can't pull it off.

• 1:04:56Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, you're Coyote Ugly now.

• 1:04:58Speaker 03

There's been Bartending, there's been fun movies, like they even like the Roadhouse remake with Gyllenhaal. They're, they try to put like a giant star in a dumb movie, basically. It's really hard.

• 1:05:09Sean Fennessey?

Well, Cruz, and this is the first movie of his, I think, where it feels like he's taking laughing gas before every take. You know, where I'm like, is he okay?

• 1:05:19Speaker 03

  It's an insane performance.

• 1:05:20Sean Fennessey?

It's such a weird performance and it's almost like he's just trying to keep his energy up all the time.

• 1:05:25Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:05:25Sean Fennessey?

But it's very entertaining. I really like it.

• 1:05:28Speaker 03

By the way, the concept of the MVP for years, like this is Cruz's MVP season and I have both Cruz movies.

• 1:05:34Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 1:05:35Speaker 03

  Cruz was the 1988 MVP.

• 1:05:36Sean Fennessey?

  It's huge for you.

• 1:05:37Speaker 03

Two huge blockbuster movies, Rain Man, Secret Force, behind an Oscar movie. Cocktail carries it by himself. It's a huge star by the end of 88. I think it's either him or Willis, right? For MVP?

• 1:05:48Speaker 04

Yeah, I mean, but Willis has like kind of come out of nowhere with this and Cruz is like, it's, it's happening.

• 1:05:53Speaker 03

Cruz is like, get ready for two of these a year for the next 10 years. I'm just gonna keep doing this.

• 1:06:00Sean Fennessey?

• 1:07:38Sean Fennessey?

Well, my other beloved movie is still on the board. It's called Beetlejuice. I can't fucking believe this. This is all, everything's coming out me.

• 1:07:45Amanda Dobbins?

I almost did it instead of Coming to America.

• 1:07:47Sean Fennessey?

Beetlejuice, much like Coming to America 2, we don't acknowledge Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. We just say the original Beetlejuice is a creative masterpiece. Another movie that probably switched me on to horror. And I don't know if I would have been as inuit if I didn't see this on cable all the fucking time on HBO, just like my previous pick.

• 1:08:04Speaker 03

  Comedy?

• 1:08:04Sean Fennessey?

Um, definitely in comedy. And Tim Burton cooking, man. I don't, you know, it's been a rough 25 years for the Tim Burton heads, but from 1985 through 2000, I don't know if there was a director I was more obsessed with, who I was more interested in whatever he was going to do next. They weren't all hits. They didn't all work.

• 1:08:22Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:08:23Sean Fennessey?

But distinct style. Someone asked me the other day, and I didn't answer this question properly. I probably should have, but they were like, when's the first time you were watching a movie, you realized what a director was and what they did? If you look at a Tim Burton movie, you're like, well, only one person could have made this. Only one person has this sensibility. I think the movie is really funny. Keaton absolutely ripping that character going so crazy and like finding a part like that for him after he had had this period in the eighties. And he has another movie this year. It's the two Michael Keaton year as well.

• 1:08:52Speaker 03

  Clean and Sober.

• 1:08:52Sean Fennessey?

Clean and Sober, the exact opposite of Beetlejuice.

• 1:08:54Speaker 03

  Solid.

• 1:08:55Sean Fennessey?

  Um, it's not bad.

• 1:08:56Speaker 03

  Hmm, it's okay.

• 1:08:57Amanda Dobbins?

  It's okay.

• 1:08:58Sean Fennessey?

But Beetlejuice is like a match made in heaven. The two of them are great together. Burton and Keaton.

• 1:09:04Speaker 03

  Great supporting cast.

• 1:09:05Sean Fennessey?

And Kath, the late Catherine O'Hara is hilarious and went on a rider and Baldwin again and Gina Davis, two Gina Davis movies this year. Um, all the musical stuff, all the creature stuff. I fucking love Beetlejuice.

• 1:09:16Speaker 03

Huge, huge Keaton movie. Another one like Hanks with Big, where it was like a lot of people had Keaton stock and had never, he'd never been in like a monster hit other than Mr. Ma, maybe?

• 1:09:27Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:09:28Speaker 03

  I don't know. Night Shift wasn't a big hit.

• 1:09:30Sean Fennessey?

No, it's like, it did okay.

• 1:09:32Speaker 03

Yeah, but he hadn't been like the centerpiece of a huge hit. And then this leads to Batman.

• 1:09:36Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:09:37Speaker 03

He's getting Batman because of this movie.

• 1:09:38Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:09:40Sean Fennessey?

  Pivotal movie, movie I love.

• 1:09:41Speaker 04

And you're taking it in comedy?

• 1:09:42Sean Fennessey?

  In comedy, yes.

• 1:09:43Amanda Dobbins?

I forgot to tell you, we did a nightmare before Christmas.

• 1:09:46Sean Fennessey?

  Oh.

• 1:09:46Amanda Dobbins?

The other, we randomly loved it, locked in.

• 1:09:49Speaker 04

  Really?

• 1:09:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, which was fascinating.

• 1:09:51Speaker 04

  Not too scary at all?

• 1:09:52Amanda Dobbins?

No, because he woke up and was like, I need some spookies in, in the middle of March. Anyway.

• 1:09:57Sean Fennessey?

Burton will, Burton will change a young moviegoer.

• 1:10:00Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, I was gonna, I was gonna do that. And because you took that, then I gotta, it's gonna affect a little bit. My next two picks here, because I'm running out.

• 1:10:08Speaker 04

Could see Christ gone right here.

• 1:10:09Amanda Dobbins?

Yep, how'd you know? No, I'm going to, I definitely know my first pick, uh, which is in drama and it's running on empty. Uh, the Sidney Lumet film starring River Phoenix and

• 1:10:23Sean Fennessey?

  Back in the news.

• 1:10:24Amanda Dobbins?

Judd Hirsch and Christine Lott, sure, back in the news from, uh, after One Battle, which was a PTA, I think stated as a major inspiration. Um, I hadn't seen it since I'd seen One Battle. Uh, it's, and the parallels are certainly there, but I mean, this movie just knocked me out when I watched it last night again. Uh, and I think, Bill, that the first time I saw it was when we did the Vietnam series with Brian Raftery, which I know that you were part of the genesis of that idea. Um, but this is a movie about two, um, former, basically Weather Underground, a, a couple who are in the Weather Underground or a similar underground army and they're on the run and they're trying to raise their sons. Um, and amazing River Phoenix performance.

• 1:11:09Speaker 04

So good. Martha Plunton's his girlfriend in this.

• 1:11:11Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, and it, it, it's an amazing double feature with one battle after another, but it is so, um, pared down compared to one battle after another. Everyone is, as they should be in a PTA movie, like going to 11 and it's, um, archetypal and ridiculous and very funny. And this is, you know, as much about piano lessons and what the little kid, what kind of sandwich you're gonna have for lunch. And really all the small moments are so observed. Um, anyway, amazing movie.

• 1:11:42Sean Fennessey?

I think one of the best movies ever about baby boomers and the, like, fire and them singing, is it Fire and Rain? In the, in the birthday party in their, in their house and they, when they know that they need to move locations and really sad, but like very simple, such an awesome, awesome movie. Great pick.

• 1:12:00Amanda Dobbins?

And then, so, action horror thriller. I would say that the one side, that everything is gone but one. So, you know, Bill has two Tom Cruises and I'm gonna have two Harrison Fords.

• 1:12:15Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:12:15Amanda Dobbins?

  And I will take frantic.

• 1:12:16Speaker 03

  Fuck, yes.

• 1:12:18Sean Fennessey?

  Polanski on the board.

• 1:12:19Amanda Dobbins?

Polanski on the board, and I don't really have anything to say about that besides that this was directed by Roman Polanski. Uh, and that's filmed in Paris because that's where he is allowed to film movies. Um, this is.

• 1:12:33Sean Fennessey?

  Exactly right.

• 1:12:34Speaker 03

At this point, was that the case, or is he just like, let's shoot this in Paris?

• 1:12:38Amanda Dobbins?

  I don't know, I'm not.

• 1:12:39Sean Fennessey?

I believe so. I believe he had fully relocated.

• 1:12:42Speaker 03

He was like, guys, we gotta do this here.

• 1:12:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:12:44Sean Fennessey?

It's Betty Buck. Oh, no, it's Polanski's. I don't know if they were married yet.

• 1:12:48Amanda Dobbins?

They were, they married in a city. Emmanuel Sennier, yeah, um.

• 1:12:52Speaker 03

  This movie is awesome.

• 1:12:54Amanda Dobbins?

This movie is so good and messed up and like Harrison Ford being like a little grimier than he needs to be.

• 1:13:02Speaker 03

  A little kooky.

• 1:13:03Amanda Dobbins?

In the, in the role of man who's just trying to find his wife. Um, Emmanuel Sennier is just dressed in the smallest dresses I've ever seen in my entire life throughout, and she looks awesome.

• 1:13:17Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:17Amanda Dobbins?

  And.

• 1:13:18Sean Fennessey?

  Guy loves his life.

• 1:13:18Amanda Dobbins?

I wish that they had picked a different hotel. It is a very like 88 hotel. It just looks like a hotel, uh, an airport lobby.

• 1:13:26Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:13:26Amanda Dobbins?

  But otherwise.

• 1:13:27Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:13:28Amanda Dobbins?

You're just going through some very weird parts of Paris.

• 1:13:31Sean Fennessey?

I feel like he practiced get off my plane with like.

• 1:13:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:13:34Sean Fennessey?

I'm looking for my wife. Like, he has a couple of those line readings where he's just very angrily looking for something.

• 1:13:40Amanda Dobbins?

The, the hair is an interesting length. Um, he doesn't go back to that. It's sort of leftover from, it's longer in Mosquito Coast too, right?

• 1:13:47Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:13:47Amanda Dobbins?

It's sloping in the front and I, I prefer it shorter, uh, anyway.

• 1:13:51Speaker 03

Premise that's been ripped off a lot.

• 1:13:53Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:13:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:13:55Speaker 03

Even with, uh, our beloved Breakdown.

• 1:13:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 1:13:58Speaker 03

  Just when I'm taken to.

• 1:13:59Speaker 04

This is really, this is vanishing, basically.

• 1:14:01Speaker 03

Yeah, this is what, what happened to the person I care about.

• 1:14:04Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:05Amanda Dobbins?

And even the scene where she disappears while he's in the shower is like, is filmed from behind him in the shower and the sound is, it's, I mean, it's really good. It's, it's messed up and really good, so.

• 1:14:15Speaker 03

  Get to go to Paris.

• 1:14:16Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:14:18Speaker 03

  Good one.

• 1:14:19Sean Fennessey?

Good pick. You have another pick, right?

• 1:14:21Speaker 04

No, that was it. Cause I did Running on Empty in the franchise.

• 1:14:23Sean Fennessey?

Oh, Running on Empty, that's right. Oh, shoot. Okay. Damn.

• 1:14:27Speaker 03

  Christ, still here.

• 1:14:28Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:14:29Sean Fennessey?

I might fuck around and take the last impression of Christ, so don't worry about that.

• 1:14:33Speaker 03

  Thought you liked Scorsese.

• 1:14:34Sean Fennessey?

I do like Scorsese. Do I want to take it? Yeah, perhaps not. Uh, in thriller, action horror, I'll be taking They Live. Which is John Carpenter's portrait of a society that is enslaved by aliens.

• 1:14:50Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:14:50Sean Fennessey?

Who are being sent subliminal messages on a daily basis about obedience in the face of their power. But also is a movie about Rowdy Roddy Piper beating the shit out of people.

• 1:15:02Speaker 04

Having one of the longest fights in an alley that's ever been recorded in cinema.

• 1:15:05Sean Fennessey?

Some of the coolest Keith David shit you'll ever seen in your life. Um, Piper clutching a shotgun, blowing guys away. Similarly, a movie that saw it at the right time of my life, was very into Piper, as you might imagine, as a professional wrestler.

• 1:15:20Speaker 04

We did this as a live rewatchable, pretty much, after a screening of this movie at the New Beverly, and I would say that-

• 1:15:26Speaker 03

  For 100 constipated guys.

• 1:15:28Speaker 04

There were a couple of guys there who were a little too keyed into the personal politics of this film and had no idea who we were.

• 1:15:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:15:36Speaker 04

Like, guys who had- a lot of their stuff was in a white plastic bag.

• 1:15:39Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:15:40Speaker 04

And they were like, uh, and what makes you an expert up here?

• 1:15:45Speaker 03

We've only done that idea once.

• 1:15:48Sean Fennessey?

It's a pretty hard movie, you know? Its themes are like, you're a slave idiot, you know? Like, deal with it.

• 1:15:56Speaker 04

Yeah. Amazing, uh, poster, the sunglasses.

• 1:15:59Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:16:00Speaker 03

The shocking thing for me when we did this list was how many I know I remember seeing in the theater. I was trying to think like, how many times did I actually go to the movies? It was at least twice a week.

• 1:16:10Sean Fennessey?

  You said 75, didn't you?

• 1:16:12Speaker 04

  What's that?

• 1:16:12Sean Fennessey?

  You were saying-

• 1:16:12Speaker 04

I've seen, I've seen 75 of these movies and I can like recall them.

• 1:16:16Speaker 03

Even in college, like, we would just go on like a Monday night.

• 1:16:19Speaker 04

The same movie theater every time?

• 1:16:20Speaker 03

Yeah, the one in Worcester. But we just, you just do it. Now I don't, I don't, I bet people go, like, I think people went to see Project Hail Mary, like, my daughter saw it last night. But I don't know if people are just like, yeah, let's go to the movies.

• 1:16:32Sean Fennessey?

It's not a weekly event, yeah.

• 1:16:34Speaker 04

This is also like a weird time for like, to remember these movies, because I think this is when my dad was like, being like, you can just come with me. And we would be seeing this stuff at like, random weird times, but I, a lot of these I remember from video.

• 1:16:45Sean Fennessey?

  Did you guys-

• 1:16:48Sean Fennessey?

What did you see together? Killer Clowns from Outer Space?

• 1:16:51Speaker 04

I remember it peaking with him getting to cut the line at the Batman premiere and I was like, my dad is God.

• 1:16:57Sean Fennessey?

  That's pretty cool.

• 1:17:00Sean Fennessey?

  That is pretty cool.

• 1:17:00Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:17:02Sean Fennessey?

Okay. That's my pick. Now it goes back to BS.

• 1:17:06Speaker 03

I have to be strategic here, unfortunately. It's the only time I'm gonna do this, cuz.

• 1:17:12Speaker 04

Is it to block me or is it because you need to get categories?

• 1:17:15Speaker 03

There's only one sequel I like out of all the sequels. It won't be surprising which one it is, but it's Halloween 4.

• 1:17:22Speaker 04

Or Return, sorry, Return of Michael Myers.

• 1:17:24Speaker 03

Had the poster and when we finished the studio, it was the poster that was between us for a while. 10 years after the original, one of my favorite movies of all time.

• 1:17:35Speaker 03

Started seeing the ads. It was the second month I was in college and uh, and my buddy Jeff, who we loved Halloween, were like on the phone, like, when you go in, we should try to time it the same day so we could talk about it after. It was a little disappointing, I can't lie. And then I've probably seen it 20 times since, maybe more.

• 1:17:54Speaker 04

We did a rewatchables about this movie.

• 1:17:55Speaker 03

We did rewatchables. I think it holds up in a lot of ways.

• 1:17:59Speaker 04

It was a fun rewatchables for sure.

• 1:18:00Speaker 03

It has the incredible, incredible scene with um, oh, that's Halloween 2. I mixed up my Halloween.

• 1:18:07Speaker 04

When the kid gets hit with the car?

• 1:18:09Speaker 03

Halloween 4 has some good ones.

• 1:18:10Sean Fennessey?

  That's an incredible scene.

• 1:18:11Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:18:12Speaker 03

But it's probably the last solid Halloween until the Halloween H2O, which is 10 years after that. And it's the only sequel I liked, so I had to take it. Sorry. I probably was the only one who was gonna take it.

• 1:18:25Sean Fennessey?

No apologies necessary. I don't share the same enthusiasm for this one.

• 1:18:29Speaker 04

I have, the sequel one is fun just because I don't, there's not like any like particularly masterful sequels, so it's like, which ones do you like?

• 1:18:37Sean Fennessey?

  There's a couple really cool ones, but I don't, I don't know if there's like a crowd pleaser.

• 1:18:42Amanda Dobbins?

Mine's quite bad, but it's, it's for me. So, that's fine.

• 1:18:49Speaker 04

  You got one more, Bill.

• 1:18:50Sean Fennessey?

  No.

• 1:18:50Speaker 04

  Oh, no, you got two.

• 1:18:51Amanda Dobbins?

  We have two.

• 1:18:52Speaker 04

Alright, so I have Blockbuster, I have Oscar nom.

• 1:18:57Sean Fennessey?

I'm still thinking about you sitting at home not voting for Dukakis.

• 1:19:00Speaker 04

  I need action.

• 1:19:01Speaker 03

  I think I might have, I just don't remember. It's possible I did.

• 1:19:03Amanda Dobbins?

It wasn't like gonna exciting. You were like taking selfies at the ballot box.

• 1:19:07Speaker 03

Yeah, yeah. Well, cuz we knew who's gonna lose at that point.

• 1:19:11Speaker 03

The one of the debates just killed them.

• 1:19:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:19:13Speaker 03

  And then the SNL.

• 1:19:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, I remember.

• 1:19:15Speaker 03

  Imitation of the debate.

• 1:19:16Sean Fennessey?

  I'm losing to this guy?

• 1:19:17Speaker 03

I'm losing to this guy. It was over when that happened.

• 1:19:20Speaker 04

Uh, in drama, I'm gonna take Last Temptation of Christ.

• 1:19:23Amanda Dobbins?

  All right.

• 1:19:24Speaker 04

Entirely for Harvey Keitel's Judas. No, this is an incredible snapshot of movie history, just, uh, in terms of the controversy surrounding this film. And when you actually see the movie for what it is, it's quite breathtaking. Um, the music in it is incredible. The, um, vision or take, which I think really comes together in the, um, the epilogue or the coda of the film, where Christ is imagining his, his life as a normal man and then realizes he's been, he's been scammed. It's just unbelievable. Defoe is fantastic in this. There's just some really weird, like Bowie is, uh, Bowie's in this, right?

• 1:20:06Speaker 03

Lot of weird people are in this.

• 1:20:07Speaker 04

Yeah. Uh, Barbara Hershey is Mary Magdalene. So there's just an amazing thing, but like, Scorsese, he was like, essentially like on the most wanted list around the making of this film and.

• 1:20:19Sean Fennessey?

Tried to get it made for years and couldn't get it off the ground.

• 1:20:21Speaker 03

It kind of sidetracked his career to some degree.

• 1:20:24Sean Fennessey?

He was gonna make it in 82, he's gonna make it in 84, and then he made Color of Money so he could get this made.

• 1:20:29Speaker 04

  Yes. Yeah.

• 1:20:30Speaker 03

Incredible soundtrack, which I used to listen to all the time.

• 1:20:34Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:20:34Speaker 03

It was like I put it on in the background if I'm trying to do work. Just really good instrumental. Peter Gabriel had a good point in his career.

• 1:20:40Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:20:41Speaker 03

  This movie's good.

• 1:20:42Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I was gonna say, you like this. I don't.

• 1:20:44Speaker 03

  I do like it.

• 1:20:44Sean Fennessey?

  You, you like this movie?

• 1:20:46Speaker 04

Yeah. This would be a really interesting rewatchables.

• 1:20:51Speaker 04

Zane Lowe weighing in on Last Temptation.

• 1:20:54Sean Fennessey?

  That also would be good.

• 1:20:57Speaker 04

Um, okay, so I have that in drama.

• 1:21:00Sean Fennessey?

It's weird, cause like, when you watch the movie and you think about it being the most controversial film of the 1980s, it seems a little silly. You know, or it's like, it's an alternative reading of the life of a person who like is a holy person, but it's like, it's a movie. I don't, you know, why would this offend these sensibilities so much? But it speaks to kind of what the culture was like at that time, that it was so controversial.

• 1:21:21Speaker 03

  Way more religious back then.

• 1:21:23Speaker 04

And then for comedy, I'm gonna take Naked Gun.

• 1:21:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:21:27Speaker 04

  Wait, I don't have a comedy, right?

• 1:21:29Speaker 03

You don't have a comedy, you have to take it for wild card.

• 1:21:31Speaker 04

Oh, I have a comedy, right? Cause I have Bull Durham.

• 1:21:33Speaker 03

You have Bull Durham as a comedy.

• 1:21:35Speaker 04

Oh, okay. I'm gonna take Naked Gun and throw that in com- in wild card because I, I saw it so many times.

• 1:21:40Sean Fennessey?

You're also, you're just missing action horror thriller. That's your empty category.

• 1:21:43Speaker 04

Yeah. Um. Holy shit. So, uh, there was no way really to, this, this is a movie that I think you watch over and over again and then the jokes become funnier and funnier and funnier because you're seeing something that's happening in the background because you're seeing the reaction of somebody to Leslie Nielsen. Um, I, I, did you guys do this for rewatchables? I don't think I was on it.

• 1:22:07Speaker 03

Yeah. You, I don't think you were.

• 1:22:09Speaker 04

  No, but I-

• 1:22:10Sean Fennessey?

  K, KB? It was Kyle?

• 1:22:12Speaker 04

  Oh, it was Kyle, right?

• 1:22:13Speaker 03

I think it, yeah, I think it was Kyle. It was a Kyle.

• 1:22:15Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:22:15Speaker 03

  Kyle the man.

• 1:22:16Speaker 04

In any case, like, just a hysterical, hysterical film.

• 1:22:19Sean Fennessey?

  Rico Palazzo.

• 1:22:20Speaker 03

Yeah, I was saying, in the theater, I think it's the hardest I've ever seen the theater laugh at any comedy I can remember going to. The, the baseball highlight scene.

• 1:22:27Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:22:28Speaker 03

Just a couple, like, people just, like, keeled over laughing.

• 1:22:31Speaker 04

And this was like, uh, this is a cool point because I think it was like, my parents had introduced me to Blazing Saddles. And we had watched some comedies, but this is one that felt like it was my, my sensibility, but they thought it was funny. Because like Roger Rabbit, I think it's referencing a lot of stuff that I was like, I don't really get some of these seventies TV cop jokes.

• 1:22:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:22:52Speaker 04

But this is, it's still cracking me up so much.

• 1:22:55Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:22:55Speaker 03

It came a few years after Airplane, so people were used to, like, these kind of jokes. The Naked Gun thing was very culty in the eighties for, like, not a lot of people saw the TV series, but people pretended they did. And then the jokes were just the corniest, funniest jokes. Nice beaver. Thank you, I just had it stuffed. It's like a million things like that.

• 1:23:14Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:23:15Speaker 03

I don't feel like people do that. They, this movie just doesn't get made anymore. When they make it, they fuck it up.

• 1:23:19Sean Fennessey?

Well, they did make The Naked Gun last year. I was gonna ask you about that with regard to the twenty twenty-five comedies. You weren't into it, yeah.

• 1:23:25Speaker 04

  I liked it, though.

• 1:23:26Sean Fennessey?

I, I was pretty mixed on it.

• 1:23:27Speaker 04

  Oh, okay.

• 1:23:27Speaker 03

  Did you like it?

• 1:23:28Sean Fennessey?

I think it was more, more, more well-liked than we felt about it.

• 1:23:31Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, it was, I mean, I, I chuckled. But it was interesting being even at the screening. There were people laughing louder in that screening than in any comedy screening that I've been in, you know, in the last 10 years.

• 1:23:43Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. It did like solidly not, it was not the major hit that they wanted it to be. But I was thinking about this the other day because this, there's so many crazy, great comedies of this year. And we talk about comedies on the rewatchables all the time. But um, one of the things that I think happened is for me as a kid watching movies like this, to Chris's point, they kind of like taught me about adult things and made me feel older. Whereas now I feel like what we have is a lot of adult references in kids movies that parents acknowledge. And there's been this like shift where instead of young kids trying to go to older adult comedies, you have older people going to kid movies for five year olds.

• 1:24:16Speaker 03

Oh, there's jokes for me inside of this animated film.

• 1:24:19Sean Fennessey?

Zootopia 2, there's a Silence of the Lambs joke. And you're like, well, this is not for any five year old on earth.

• 1:24:24Amanda Dobbins?

I think I was asleep during that part, so.

• 1:24:27Speaker 03

  It's okay, mama.

• 1:24:27Sean Fennessey?

Anyway, it's a big shift because we do still get comedies, they're just for little kids.

• 1:24:33Speaker 03

  Okay.

• 1:24:33Sean Fennessey?

  BS. You got two more?

• 1:24:36Speaker 03

  I really played this perfectly.

• 1:24:38Sean Fennessey?

  Sure.

• 1:24:39Speaker 03

  Really excited about it.

• 1:24:40Sean Fennessey?

  Absolutely.

• 1:24:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:24:44Speaker 03

I love this movie. I don't know if you guys realize I love this movie and it might have screwed up your boards, but I do love this movie and I remember seeing it in the theater.

• 1:24:51Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, no.

• 1:24:52Speaker 03

And I've seen it a bunch of times since.

• 1:24:54Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, no.

• 1:24:54Speaker 03

And I watched it recently and I fucking love it. And it's on the rewatchables list at some point. It's an absolute banger, Dangerous Liaisons.

• 1:25:02Speaker 04

  Oh.

• 1:25:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh.

• 1:25:03Speaker 03

It's not gonna take it for drama.

• 1:25:04Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:25:08Sean Fennessey?

  Academy Award nominated.

• 1:25:09Speaker 03

The ending, the last 10 minutes of this movie and Glenn Close and everything she does. And her getting hissed at at the opera or wherever they are. And then she comes home and she's just taking the makeup off. And he finally got her in the end. He had to, of course, die, Malkovich.

• 1:25:25Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:25:25Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:25:26Speaker 03

Malkovich is throwing 135 miles an hour.

• 1:25:28Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:25:29Speaker 03

Like it's like one of, did he get nominated?

• 1:25:32Speaker 04

Uh, he actually might have, actually.

• 1:25:34Sean Fennessey?

Glenn Close did. No, Michelle Pfeiffer did.

• 1:25:38Speaker 04

  My queen, Michelle Pfeiffer.

• 1:25:39Speaker 03

Pfeiffer, close and picture, I believe.

• 1:25:41Speaker 04

  And picture.

• 1:25:41Speaker 03

But Malkovich didn't get nominated. Like, that's fucking unbelievable. He's so good in this movie. Um, you have Keanu Reeves as like a goofy, I guess, French guy. I don't even know what language he's supposed to be mastering in this.

• 1:25:55Sean Fennessey?

  And Uma, too, right?

• 1:25:56Speaker 03

  Uma, just out of nowhere.

• 1:25:57Sean Fennessey?

  So beautiful in this movie.

• 1:25:58Speaker 03

The real ones, they were from Johnny B. Good. She came in that one, Throwing 99, with Anthony Michael Hall.

• 1:26:03Speaker 04

I really signed on for season tickets with Jennifer 8.

• 1:26:06Speaker 03

That was later. That was after this.

• 1:26:07Speaker 04

  I'm saying this, that's when I joined.

• 1:26:09Speaker 03

But Johnny B. Good on the map, and then Dangerous Liaisons. We're all in love with her. And, uh, you know, this movie got ripped off by Cruel Intentions.

• 1:26:18Amanda Dobbins?

Well, my brainwashed opinion is Cruel Intentions did it better. It's not ripped off. It's homage. It's teen tribute. Well, that's fine.

• 1:26:26Speaker 03

They did. I do love Cruel Intentions.

• 1:26:28Amanda Dobbins?

I rewatched it for this, and I was like, yeah, no, Cruel Intentions is better. I've seen Cruel Intentions three thousand times.

• 1:26:35Speaker 03

Cruel Intentions is the popcorn version of this.

• 1:26:36Sean Fennessey?

You're kind of a Steven Frears fan, too, aren't you?

• 1:26:37Amanda Dobbins?

I am, and, you know, they've, again, another movie filmed in Paris, in old buildings, with costumes and makeup and whatever, and I just, it's, it's way better when it's Ryan Phillippe driving to Bittersweet Symphony. I'm sorry.

• 1:26:50Sean Fennessey?

  Fair enough.

• 1:26:50Amanda Dobbins?

  You know?

• 1:26:50Speaker 03

It's, I support both. You know what? There's room in my house for each movie. Um, it's a little close to the other one.

• 1:26:57Amanda Dobbins?

I'm the Martha fucking lady of the Upper East Side. Come on.

• 1:26:59Speaker 03

This movie was a big deal when it came out. And I felt like people went to see it and cared about it and talked about it. And, uh, and it was just cool. And it had a lot of people that either were at a good point in their career or would eventually be.

• 1:27:10Speaker 04

It's also like, it's pretty, you know, Bridgerton, obviously, is probably among the two or three most popular things on whatever we call TV now. And it's like, this is sort of people humping while wearing big costumes is like a very viable structure.

• 1:27:26Sean Fennessey?

  It's a good point.

• 1:27:26Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:27Sean Fennessey?

Eileen just buzzed through every season of Bridgerton in about 14 days.

• 1:27:31Speaker 03

  She like it?

• 1:27:31Sean Fennessey?

She's all caught up. Yeah, I think so. She's pretty in.

• 1:27:34Speaker 03

Honestly, you could say Dangerous Liaisons created that world, too. That whole Bridgerton, like, people dressed up in the past, being horny.

• 1:27:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:27:42Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:27:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:43Sean Fennessey?

It's up there, for sure. I'm trying to think, what is the first example of that? You know, Barry Lyndon, there's a little bit of that in there.

• 1:27:48Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:27:48Speaker 04

  Tom Jones, yeah.

• 1:27:49Speaker 03

I do love Cruel Intentions. This was, to me, I don't feel like you have to pick. I'm sorry.

• 1:27:53Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. I mean, you don't. You don't. There's grown up in.

• 1:27:57Speaker 03

Do you like one of your kids more than the other? No.

• 1:28:00Speaker 03

Maybe, maybe this is a bad day to ask.

• 1:28:02Amanda Dobbins?

This is where it goes wrong for Glenn Close and Oscars, right? Because she should have, this is the one.

• 1:28:08Speaker 03

  So who'd she lose to?

• 1:28:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Gina, no. Jodie Foster.

• 1:28:12Speaker 03

Oh, Jodie Foster. Jodie Foster was great in that movie.

• 1:28:14Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, but it's like, this is probably

• 1:28:19Amanda Dobbins?

the best shot. Was, was she nominated for Fatal Attraction, Glenn Close?

• 1:28:23Speaker 03

  I don't think she was.

• 1:28:24Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, that's also a mistake, but.

• 1:28:28Speaker 03

  Well, best supporting actor.

• 1:28:30Sean Fennessey?

She was nominated for Fatal Attraction.

• 1:28:31Amanda Dobbins?

So eighty-seven, she misses out, and then she misses out again for Dangerous Liaisons.

• 1:28:35Sean Fennessey?

Dangerous Liaisons is also her fifth nomination.

• 1:28:38Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:28:39Speaker 03

But Malcomovich not getting best supporting actor is a fucking outrage, really. I'm looking at it now, just getting mad.

• 1:28:44Speaker 04

Does he have any Oscar nominations?

• 1:28:46Speaker 03

Martin Landau and Tucker, The Man in His Dream, get the fuck out of here.

• 1:28:49Sean Fennessey?

  Honestly, a good movie.

• 1:28:49Speaker 03

  Come on.

• 1:28:50Speaker 04

Well, Alec Guinness for Little Dorrit's pretty.

• 1:28:52Speaker 03

Little Dorrit. Do you have Little Dorrit on 4K yet, Sean?

• 1:28:53Sean Fennessey?

You know, I've never seen it.

• 1:28:56Speaker 03

  Ridiculous.

• 1:28:57Sean Fennessey?

Why are you, when you get mad about things like this, why are you mad at me? Like, what do you think I represent?

• 1:29:01Speaker 03

I know, I get mad at the Oscars and how stupid it was in the eighties and nineties. I just think they did so many dumb things.

• 1:29:07Sean Fennessey?

I do like that Dean Stockwell nomination, though. It's a pretty cool one.

• 1:29:10Speaker 03

And I was, River Phoenix getting nominated was.

• 1:29:12Amanda Dobbins?

  That was great. He's amazing.

• 1:29:13Speaker 03

  That was good.

• 1:29:15Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, weird Oscars, definitely.

• 1:29:17Speaker 04

Malcomovich got nominated for Places in the Heart and in the, in the Line of Fire. Didn't win.

• 1:29:22Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 1:29:23Speaker 03

I actually thought, um, what's the movie with the Killing Fields?

• 1:29:28Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:29:29Speaker 03

Thought he was awesome in that movie.

• 1:29:32Speaker 03

Confronts, what's the same water stone in the bathroom?

• 1:29:36Sean Fennessey?

  I just.

• 1:29:37Speaker 03

When's the last time you saw that movie? The movie's.

• 1:29:39Sean Fennessey?

It's been a long time. I did watch, um, what's the Spalding Gray movie where he talks about his experience making The Killing Fields? Is it Swimming to Cambodia?

• 1:29:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:29:47Sean Fennessey?

The, which, the Jonathan Demme movie, which he probably made right before he made Married to the Mob. What was the other one that I just rewatched that I wanted to tell you about? It was so good.

• 1:29:57Speaker 04

  In that era?

• 1:29:58Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Oh, Empire of the Sun. Malkovich is so good in Empire of the Sun.

• 1:30:01Speaker 04

  He's awesome in that.

• 1:30:02Sean Fennessey?

  And I just rewatched it.

• 1:30:03Speaker 04

Him and Stiller, the American soldiers, yeah.

• 1:30:05Speaker 03

It's a good, good topic of like, was his career? Like, should he just have been a more famous actor, basically?

• 1:30:13Speaker 04

But he also had like a-

• 1:30:14Speaker 03

Was he a better actor than his career?

• 1:30:15Sean Fennessey?

  But his reputation is gold.

• 1:30:16Speaker 04

  But that's what I mean.

• 1:30:17Sean Fennessey?

He's like an icon, even though he was never a box office star.

• 1:30:19Speaker 04

Cause he's one of the original Steppenwolf people, right?

• 1:30:22Amanda Dobbins?

And then he has being John Malkovich, like, you know, about him. He, it's-

• 1:30:26Sean Fennessey?

It's coming back this year, though, because the new Martin McDonagh movie, he's the star with Sam Rockwell. And I feel like, for the first time in a long time, he's gonna be the star of a mainstream American movie.

• 1:30:34Speaker 03

He won an Oscar, that's a longstanding O.

• 1:30:37Speaker 04

He was also like, I love Malkovich. Quite good in Pete Berg's Mile Twenty-Two.

• 1:30:41Sean Fennessey?

  Is that a fact?

• 1:30:41Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:30:42Sean Fennessey?

Was he, who gave better for him, it's him or Ronda Rousey in that film?

• 1:30:46Speaker 04

I'd have to check the tape. I like that movie.

• 1:30:52Speaker 04

  Solid movie.

• 1:30:53Sean Fennessey?

One of the more incoherent films of that year. Uh, is it me?

• 1:30:57Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:30:58Sean Fennessey?

Okay, I got drama, sequel, and wild card left. And in drama, I'm staying baseball, I'm going eight men out. Um, John Sales is wonderfully embittered portrait of the Black Sox scandal that I just revisited this week, I'm really glad I did. Um, starring our guy David Strathairn as Ed Seacott and DB Sweeney as Shoeless Joe Jackson, John Cusack as, what's Cusack's character's name?

• 1:31:28Speaker 04

  Uh, Eddie's, no, not Eddie.

• 1:31:30Sean Fennessey?

Buck Weaver. Buck Weaver, thank you.

• 1:31:32Speaker 04

  Oh, Buck Weaver, yeah.

• 1:31:33Sean Fennessey?

  Right there.

• 1:31:34Speaker 04

He's always talking to these, like, hey, tell him Buck said shit at the game, you know?

• 1:31:37Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, Buck's such an interesting, he's the most interesting character in the movie, and he was like the biggest star at the time, and and he's the one who didn't cheat-

• 1:31:43Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:31:43Sean Fennessey?

But who didn't squeal, and so he suffered the same fate, and I was reading about him after seeing the movie, and he, you know, Weaver's family for years tried to get his name cleared-

• 1:31:53Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:31:54Sean Fennessey?

in the scandal, and I don't think I totally realized this, but in 2021, his name was finally cleared by baseball, and he was restored to good standing in the history of baseball, and his family was like, not good enough, this was too late. They were just mad about it, which I found to be so interesting. But yeah, Sales' movie is so good. All of his movies are about labor and power and who controls people, and this is an example of like, the ballplayers, kind of the first player empowerment movie. And doesn't turn out so well for the people who try to get power in that case, but uh- Pretty good representation of baseball at that time. I feel like most of the guys, the actors are pretty good. Michael Rooker, you know, like they're all pretty believable as 1910s ballplayers.

• 1:32:33Sean Fennessey?

Um, but that's only like a small part of the movie. A lot of the movie is courtroom drama and character drama, but really, really great film.

• 1:32:40Speaker 04

  What a crazy cast.

• 1:32:41Speaker 03

Um, I'm seething inside. I was saving it because I thought I'd be able to get it. I didn't think anyone would have that one.

• 1:32:47Sean Fennessey?

This is a weird drama year.

• 1:32:49Speaker 03

  Dangerous liaison spot.

• 1:32:50Speaker 04

I took this in another draft. I can't remember what.

• 1:32:53Speaker 03

  This movie's awesome.

• 1:32:54Speaker 04

  What it would have been.

• 1:32:54Sean Fennessey?

  Chicago draft, I think.

• 1:32:55Speaker 04

  Chicago draft.

• 1:32:56Speaker 03

The ending's great. Fucking DB Sweeney playing in some minor league in Jersey and Buck Weavers.

• 1:33:01Sean Fennessey?

  Sitting in the stands.

• 1:33:02Speaker 03

Can't play baseball, just sitting. He's like, that's the best centerfielder I ever saw.

• 1:33:05Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:33:05Sean Fennessey?

They're like, is that Joe? He's like, that's not him.

• 1:33:07Speaker 03

  Unbelievable ending.

• 1:33:08Sean Fennessey?

  I love that ending.

• 1:33:09Speaker 03

Um, I like the hats and the outfits.

• 1:33:12Speaker 04

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:33:13Speaker 03

This has been on the rewatchables list for like two years. I love this movie.

• 1:33:16Speaker 04

Who plays Comiskey? Clifton James? What's his name?

• 1:33:19Sean Fennessey?

I don't remember the actor's name. I love the scene when they introduce Kenneth Somon Landis.

• 1:33:23Speaker 04

  Clifton James.

• 1:33:23Sean Fennessey?

And then like make him the commissioner of baseball and they're like, uh, he's like, they're like two year contract and he's like lifetime contract.

• 1:33:33Speaker 03

One of the things about, right. One of the things about this movie is, uh,

• 1:33:38Speaker 03

this was one of the great sports books ever. And in the eighties, it was considered like one of, basically one of the 10 best. So when they made the movie about it, it was a big deal. It was like, oh, they're gonna try to do this.

• 1:33:48Speaker 04

It kinda had the problem of coming out in the shadow of Bull Durham where it was like.

• 1:33:51Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:33:52Speaker 04

Bull Durham's a lot more fun.

• 1:33:53Sean Fennessey?

It's not fun. Yeah, it's not a fun movie.

• 1:33:55Speaker 03

1919 and it's about a scandal and, but Cusack being in it was a big deal.

• 1:33:59Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:33:59Speaker 03

Um, I didn't know who anyone else was. Straight there and was like, I didn't know who that was.

• 1:34:04Sean Fennessey?

He is unbelievable in this movie.

• 1:34:05Speaker 03

He was really great in this movie.

• 1:34:06Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, that, to me, that's a real like not nominated for an Oscar, not even acknowledged. I think he might've gotten, he's been nominated for like five independent spirit awards, all for John Sales movies. He might've won for this, or maybe it was the movie before this, but.

• 1:34:18Speaker 03

Did you say who the centerfielder was?

• 1:34:21Sean Fennessey?

  Who was the centerfielder?

• 1:34:22Speaker 03

  Chas Sheen.

• 1:34:23Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, that's right.

• 1:34:23Speaker 04

  Oh, that's right.

• 1:34:24Speaker 03

Really believable. Like all the actors, they made a big deal about like, we only have actors who are good baseball players. And you can kind of feel it in the baseball scenes. The actors are, they all seem like they're.

• 1:34:35Speaker 04

Mr. Fairan only has to throw like 41 miles per hour.

• 1:34:37Speaker 03

  Right, right.

• 1:34:38Speaker 04

Cause this guy's would throw nine games in a row. Yeah.

• 1:34:40Sean Fennessey?

Well, that's kind of the point too, is he like, he's thrown like 382 innings.

• 1:34:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:34:46Speaker 03

  It's a really good movie.

• 1:34:47Speaker 04

Okay, so Amanda has her last two?

• 1:34:51Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I have three left.

• 1:34:51Speaker 04

  Oh, three left.

• 1:34:52Amanda Dobbins?

I have Oscar nominee, sequel, and wild card.

• 1:34:55Sean Fennessey?

The trick of the seven. We don't always do seven.

• 1:34:57Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. So I know what I'm gonna do here. In Oscar nominee, I'm gonna take my first pick, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which is the Almodovar film. And I think it was many people's first Almodovar film, and certainly mine, but not in 1988. And I was trying to remember,

• 1:35:17Amanda Dobbins?

I think I might have been shown this like in a classroom, but I can't remember having a teacher cool enough to be like, here, sit down and watch this.

• 1:35:24Sean Fennessey?

It was the US breakthrough for him, for sure.

• 1:35:26Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. But anyway, this to me was like a real, you know, who framed Jessica Rabbit's survey, like, oh, movies can, movies can look like this. Obviously, the color. And even the actors are all so beautiful, but they have interesting non-Hollywood faces. And they're framed in a certain way in the sense of humor. But I guess, you know, film as like actual museum art piece, in addition to being really funny. So it's always stuck with me. Also, the clothes are just out of sight. They're very, they're very new Chanel, actually. But.

• 1:36:01Sean Fennessey?

It won, right? It won international?

• 1:36:02Amanda Dobbins?

  No, I don't think so.

• 1:36:03Sean Fennessey?

No, it didn't win. What won international? Was it Pelé the Conqueror?

• 1:36:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 1:36:06Sean Fennessey?

Sheesh. Kind of a loaded international feature year this year. Salam Bombay, Mirnaïr, one of her first films. Her son is now the.

• 1:36:16Speaker 03

  Max got nominated, right?

• 1:36:17Sean Fennessey?

Yeah. Max Bond C. Dow for Pelé the Conqueror, yeah.

• 1:36:20Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:20Speaker 03

Didn't get nominated as the good Nazi in Victory, though.

• 1:36:24Sean Fennessey?

He did not. He did not.

• 1:36:26Speaker 03

  He stood up for Pelé.

• 1:36:27Sean Fennessey?

When are we gonna do the seventh seal on the rewatchables? Do you think we'll do that?

• 1:36:31Speaker 03

  Yeah. Oh, CR.

• 1:36:33Speaker 04

Seventh seal in Jacob's Ladder, double feature.

• 1:36:36Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:36Speaker 03

Jacob's Ladder freaks me out. Yeah. Actually, that's not a rewatchable for me. It makes me uncomfortable and unhappy.

• 1:36:42Sean Fennessey?

  Very effective. Adrian Lyne.

• 1:36:44Speaker 04

Seventh seal is Demi, and he.

• 1:36:47Speaker 03

  This movie, this year, right?

• 1:36:49Speaker 04

  Yeah, yeah.

• 1:36:50Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:36:51Speaker 04

  Is it Satan?

• 1:36:52Speaker 03

The movie did not do that well.

• 1:36:53Sean Fennessey?

Did she give him first two?

• 1:36:54Speaker 04

  Right.

• 1:36:54Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:55Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:36:55Speaker 04

  Stupid. Hang in there, mama.

• 1:36:58Speaker 03

Hey, listen, you gotta love your kids.

• 1:37:02Amanda Dobbins?

Um, okay, I'm gonna go to wildcard.

• 1:37:03Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 1:37:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Um.

• 1:37:05Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:37:05Amanda Dobbins?

Just in case someone who gets wild to do wildcard before me takes, uh, this film, which is Crossing the Lancy.

• 1:37:12Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:37:13Amanda Dobbins?

The Joan McLean Silver movie. Um, it's just, it's really a romantic comedy set in New York in the late 1980s and, and is about a professional-ish woman.

• 1:37:26Sean Fennessey?

  Mm-hmm.

• 1:37:27Amanda Dobbins?

She works in books. It's, you know, it's one of these movies that I, that illustrated what I thought New York was gonna be like when I moved there, which is that I, you know, I would work in books and have, you know, affairs with the evil doctor from The Fugitive.

• 1:37:41Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 1:37:41Amanda Dobbins?

  Uh, and then-

• 1:37:42Speaker 04

Did you imagine putting your sneakers on and then putting your heels in your bag?

• 1:37:46Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I mean, that's also Working Girl, you know?

• 1:37:48Speaker 04

  Sure.

• 1:37:48Amanda Dobbins?

This is the, this is the more, you know, she's less ambitious in Crossing the Lancy-

• 1:37:52Sean Fennessey?

  Sure.

• 1:37:52Amanda Dobbins?

-than Tess is in Working Girl, but it's the same. Two girls trying to make it work and, and find love with enterprising businessmen, in this case, um, ultimately a, a pickle guy.

• 1:38:03Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:38:03Amanda Dobbins?

A really, really, very understanding pickle man.

• 1:38:07Sean Fennessey?

  He's very accommodating.

• 1:38:08Amanda Dobbins?

Kind of the inverse of John McClane, you know?

• 1:38:10Speaker 04

He was about 25, 27 years early on Pickles.

• 1:38:13Amanda Dobbins?

  Sure.

• 1:38:14Speaker 04

  But they came back.

• 1:38:15Amanda Dobbins?

  You pickle guy?

• 1:38:15Speaker 04

No. I mean, like, I like them, but they're not a part of my personality.

• 1:38:18Speaker 03

He knows it in this movie?

• 1:38:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Who?

• 1:38:21Speaker 03

You have to excuse my friend, Richard Kimbo.

• 1:38:25Sean Fennessey?

  Jerome Krabs!

• 1:38:25Amanda Dobbins?

  I know!

• 1:38:26Speaker 03

  He's very sick.

• 1:38:28Sean Fennessey?

  Jerome Krabs!

• 1:38:29Speaker 03

  He's very sick.

• 1:38:29Sean Fennessey?

He's like a dashing author who like pops in and out of her life.

• 1:38:32Amanda Dobbins?

  He's really, really handsome!

• 1:38:33Speaker 03

  Richard!

• 1:38:34Sean Fennessey?

  He's popping pervasive.

• 1:38:37Speaker 04

  I love that guy.

• 1:38:38Sean Fennessey?

You switched the samples! Pre- pre- pre- vastic!

• 1:38:42Speaker 03

Can we just do a table reading of The Fugitive? It's like, have 20 people?

• 1:38:48Speaker 04

  All right.

• 1:38:48Sean Fennessey?

You switched the samples very close to, you moved the headstones-

• 1:38:52Speaker 04

You talked to the log box.

• 1:38:53Sean Fennessey?

-but you didn't move the bodies. My other favorite line reading from that time. You moved the headstones, but you didn't move the bodies! Craig T. Nelson from Poltergeist?

• 1:38:59Amanda Dobbins?

Do you know that, oh, your line meetings where you just yelling?

• 1:39:01Sean Fennessey?

It's just my dad yelling at me, but I'm watching a movie.

• 1:39:04Speaker 03

That's why we love They Knew with Ruffalo.

• 1:39:06Sean Fennessey?

  That's true.

• 1:39:06Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah?

• 1:39:07Sean Fennessey?

  I love a yell actor. That's why I love Ciara's impressions. They're great yellers.

• 1:39:11Speaker 03

Sean, don't fuck me in this.

• 1:39:14Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, I don't know what I'm doing.

• 1:39:15Speaker 04

So what do you, what do you have left?

• 1:39:17Speaker 03

  Action?

• 1:39:18Sean Fennessey?

No, I already did that. I'm good.

• 1:39:20Speaker 03

  Oh, you did They Live?

• 1:39:20Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, I did They Live.

• 1:39:21Speaker 03

So you have sequel and wildcard left?

• 1:39:23Sean Fennessey?

  Sequel and wildcard.

• 1:39:26Sean Fennessey?

Is it better to do wildcard before sequel? It might be. I'll tell you what I'm gonna do. In Wild Card, I'm doing a fish called Wanda. Um, which I don't think has the legacy that it did when I was a kid.

• 1:39:38Speaker 03

  It does not.

• 1:39:38Amanda Dobbins?

Gonna be honest, I rewatched it because I remembered absolutely losing my mind with laughter.

• 1:39:44Sean Fennessey?

  Thinking it was funny.

• 1:39:44Amanda Dobbins?

And then I just sat there on the couch.

• 1:39:46Sean Fennessey?

And you didn't think it was funny?

• 1:39:46Amanda Dobbins?

  I didn't. I, I turned it off. I was like, I give up.

• 1:39:49Sean Fennessey?

  Well.

• 1:39:49Amanda Dobbins?

  And that's disrespectful.

• 1:39:50Sean Fennessey?

Big Monty Python guy, obviously. So I like the idea of them, like, the, some of those figures doing something that wasn't in that world specifically with a little bit more seriousness. Kevin Kline won the Oscar this year, which is a very weird win, one of the only comedy wins in the history of the Academy Awards.

• 1:40:06Speaker 03

  Not nominated for Dave.

• 1:40:07Sean Fennessey?

  Not nominated for Dave.

• 1:40:08Amanda Dobbins?

  Should've won for Dave.

• 1:40:09Sean Fennessey?

I always really liked this movie.

• 1:40:10Amanda Dobbins?

  It's a pre-Oscar for Dave.

• 1:40:12Sean Fennessey?

Directed by Charles Crichton, who was like in his seventies, who had made all those Ealing comedies in the forties and fifties. And I don't know, John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, smoking hot.

• 1:40:21Amanda Dobbins?

I, she, she looks amazing. I think that the recent Jamie Lee Curtis, like Renaissance, like, or the eighth Renaissance.

• 1:40:30Sean Fennessey?

They won't take eighties Jamie Lee Curtis from me. You couldn't take her from like cold dead hands.

• 1:40:34Amanda Dobbins?

She's overexposed to me. That's all.

• 1:40:37Speaker 03

It should've ended with the bear that first time.

• 1:40:39Speaker 04

She's just going viral now, where she's just like, every time she opens her mouth, she says something that breaks news. Like she, she announced that the bear was ending.

• 1:40:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:40:45Speaker 04

She's like, Jason Blum's a cheapskate, you know, like, she's really, she's really speaking her truth.

• 1:40:51Sean Fennessey?

  She is.

• 1:40:51Speaker 03

Amanda, are you, are you gonna tell these kids that they're gonna lose a homeless shelter? Cause we wanna make people feel better about their cars?

• 1:40:59Amanda Dobbins?

We've been talking a lot about power loaders on, um, on the big picture recently, I think because of Avatar. Cause Edie Falco is in a power loader for a lot of Avatar three.

• 1:41:08Sean Fennessey?

Have you seen Avatar Fire and Ash?

• 1:41:09Speaker 03

  God, no.

• 1:41:10Amanda Dobbins?

Anyway, I just, I only think about him, Dave, you know, I once caught a fish this big, which is immediately what I would do.

• 1:41:18Sean Fennessey?

  That's a good one, yeah.

• 1:41:18Speaker 03

I was thinking that the most amazing Dave remake of all time would be if they got Shane Gillis to replace Trump. As Dave.

• 1:41:29Sean Fennessey?

But you can't do a real person.

• 1:41:31Speaker 04

But yeah, I do think you're very, you're on to something very funny.

• 1:41:34Speaker 03

Can you imagine that movie though? Just, it'll never happen, but just in your head, imagine it's a Shane Gillis movie. He's a, he's.

• 1:41:41Amanda Dobbins?

  How, do you think that?

• 1:41:45Speaker 03

  I don't know.

• 1:41:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:41:46Speaker 04

If Shane Gillis just started doing Trump's press conferences, would you be surprised? Would you be like, this tracks for the way things are going?

• 1:41:53Speaker 03

Yeah, I guess that's where the movie falls apart. I watched Dave, uh, last week, actually.

• 1:41:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Just on your own or?

• 1:42:00Sean Fennessey?

Yes, you've made three references to it, so we can tell.

• 1:42:02Amanda Dobbins?

  Listen.

• 1:42:03Speaker 03

  It's just a phenomenal movie.

• 1:42:04Amanda Dobbins?

  I agree with you.

• 1:42:06Speaker 03

Every actor's great. Sigourney Weaver's great.

• 1:42:08Sean Fennessey?

That was the three of us.

• 1:42:08Speaker 03

  Everybody's great. It's just great. It's, it's held up 100%.

• 1:42:12Amanda Dobbins?

  I had that VHS.

• 1:42:14Speaker 03

Given, you know, how things are going lately, like.

• 1:42:16Sean Fennessey?

What's happening? What do you mean?

• 1:42:17Speaker 03

It's just a very optimistic mid 90s, like I believe in stuff movie.

• 1:42:20Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:42:22Speaker 03

I just really enjoyed it and it always gets me being rames at the end.

• 1:42:25Sean Fennessey?

  Incredible Langella performance in it.

• 1:42:28Speaker 03

Dave, I would have taken a bullet for you.

• 1:42:30Sean Fennessey?

That's vain. Yeah. But Langella, when he's like.

• 1:42:33Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:42:33Sean Fennessey?

  I can kill him. He's, he's not, he's, he's barely a person.

• 1:42:37Speaker 03

My, it's not his office. It's my office.

• 1:42:39Amanda Dobbins?

  I mean.

• 1:42:40Speaker 03

  The movie's amazing.

• 1:42:41Amanda Dobbins?

The bratwurst and saving the shelter. It's beautiful.

• 1:42:44Speaker 03

It's in the mix again. It's been on the channels and on the stream. I feel like it's having a moment right now.

• 1:42:48Sean Fennessey?

  You're out on Dave.

• 1:42:49Speaker 04

I like Dave. Yeah. I have a different view of the executive branch these days, but.

• 1:42:57Sean Fennessey?

  You think you could run?

• 1:42:58Speaker 04

  For president?

• 1:42:59Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:43:00Speaker 03

I know. CR month, a lot of momentum right now.

• 1:43:02Speaker 04

  It's true.

• 1:43:02Sean Fennessey?

Good point. You should have announced.

• 1:43:04Speaker 04

  Get 11,000 votes.

• 1:43:08Amanda Dobbins?

  But now Bill, okay.

• 1:43:09Sean Fennessey?

How would you do? Well, I think, I think you would do well in this environment if you were on one of those stages with 15 other nominees in a debate.

• 1:43:17Speaker 03

Just you're cracking one liners and just trying to.

• 1:43:20Sean Fennessey?

I feel like you'd do well.

• 1:43:21Speaker 03

Yeah. You're just picking your spots.

• 1:43:22Sean Fennessey?

But would you be like little Marco? Like, oh, little CR all the way on the overshot?

• 1:43:25Speaker 04

No, he would do the, the Bill rhetorical thing that he would do on the debates is he, somebody would say something and Bill would go, you're missing a crucial point.

• 1:43:35Speaker 03

  Yeah, that's true.

• 1:43:36Sean Fennessey?

  That's your move. Yeah.

• 1:43:37Speaker 03

I would be hard on the, are you better off than you were four years ago? Look at the mayor, are you?

• 1:43:42Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:43:42Speaker 03

  Are you?

• 1:43:43Sean Fennessey?

  That usually works.

• 1:43:44Speaker 03

Yeah. It's always good. The answer is always no and not.

• 1:43:46Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:43:48Sean Fennessey?

  You're up.

• 1:43:48Speaker 03

I didn't really like Fish, Fish Called Wanda. Just was never a fan. Saw it once in the theater, didn't really do much for me, and I've never seen it since. But other people I know really like it. Just never did it for me.

• 1:43:59Speaker 04

It's very weird because I remember thinking it was the funniest, and I love Monty Python, too.

• 1:44:03Sean Fennessey?

I have, I did not re-watch it for this. It was, it's a movie that I remember my dad laughing at very hard. That's a very, because he didn't, he wasn't a huge comedy fan, and him loving that movie, I always thought was interesting. But maybe I should re-watch it, and it sucks, and it ruins my draft. We'll see.

• 1:44:19Speaker 03

I saved some action movies, hoping one would be available for this stage of the draft. And of course, my favorite one was for action horror thriller.

• 1:44:29Speaker 03

  Bloodsport.

• 1:44:29Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:44:31Speaker 03

With a guy named Jean-Claude Van Damme. This was his breakthrough.

• 1:44:35Sean Fennessey?

You just dropped a perfect pronunciation.

• 1:44:37Speaker 03

I know, I've been working on it.

• 1:44:39Sean Fennessey?

  That was incredible.

• 1:44:40Speaker 03

  This is.

• 1:44:41Sean Fennessey?

I feel like that was like Jimmy just went electric. You just nailed the pronunciation of Jean-Claude Van Damme.

• 1:44:49Sean Fennessey?

I can't believe that just happened.

• 1:44:50Speaker 03

I know. Yeah, I nailed it.

• 1:44:54Speaker 03

One of the great ideas ever for an action movie.

• 1:44:56Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 1:44:57Speaker 03

The Kumite. Chong Li, one of the best villains we've ever had in a movie.

• 1:45:03Sean Fennessey?

  It is good.

• 1:45:05Speaker 03

He's, this movie has been on for thirty-eight straight years.

• 1:45:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:45:10Speaker 03

I was in St. Bart's once in two thousand and watched it in another language.

• 1:45:14Speaker 04

You watched it in what language?

• 1:45:16Speaker 03

In like two thousand, it was on in like French, and I watched, I watched like two-thirds of it.

• 1:45:21Speaker 04

Was your wife like, what are you doing? You're in the Caribbean?

• 1:45:24Speaker 03

My wife was literally like, what are you doing? And I'm like, hold on.

• 1:45:28Speaker 04

  Le Kumite!

• 1:45:30Speaker 03

He's about to fight Chong Li.

• 1:45:34Speaker 03

And then the ending, some of the best acting of Van Damme's career.

• 1:45:38Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:45:38Speaker 03

  With Donald Gibb, AKA Ogre.

• 1:45:41Sean Fennessey?

  Yep.

• 1:45:42Speaker 03

  Now, anytime, anyplace.

• 1:45:45Sean Fennessey?

Some of the more upsetting, like bone-crunching fights in movie history, where you're like, did Chong Li actually just kill that guy?

• 1:45:52Speaker 03

He might have. He might have. It's, it's.

• 1:45:56Speaker 04

It's like the fight version of Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie.

• 1:46:01Sean Fennessey?

Is this a real blood sport? I'll give you a hundred dollars cash if you can name who directed this movie.

• 1:46:06Speaker 04

  Uh.

• 1:46:08Amanda Dobbins?

Do you have it on you? I thought you stopped carrying cash.

• 1:46:10Sean Fennessey?

It's in my bag. Get it out. A hundred dollars cash.

• 1:46:12Speaker 04

  I really don't know.

• 1:46:13Speaker 03

  I don't know this either. I don't know it.

• 1:46:14Speaker 04

My first reaction is Ted Kaczynski, but I know it's not.

• 1:46:17Sean Fennessey?

It's not. That's a good, really good guess. It's the kind, it does feel like a Ted Kaczynski movie. No?

• 1:46:21Speaker 03

  No.

• 1:46:22Sean Fennessey?

  His name is Newt Arnold.

• 1:46:25Speaker 03

  Didn't know that.

• 1:46:25Sean Fennessey?

He is a legendary assistant director, who was the assistant director on many Lumet films, on The Godfather Part Two. He did not direct many films himself.

• 1:46:35Speaker 04

Do you think when he's in the Kumite, do you think he's like, man, this is even better than?

• 1:46:40Speaker 03

  Amanda, force Whittakers in this.

• 1:46:44Amanda Dobbins?

  I honestly.

• 1:46:44Speaker 03

  Is it future Oscar?

• 1:46:45Sean Fennessey?

Seriously, if he show knocks this movie, it will change his life.

• 1:46:49Amanda Dobbins?

  Aren't they remaking it?

• 1:46:50Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, yeah.

• 1:46:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Aren't they doing?

• 1:46:51Sean Fennessey?

Michaela Cole is remaking. Did you see this? Michaela Cole is remaking.

• 1:46:55Speaker 03

I'm against this. Nobody should touch Bloodsport.

• 1:46:57Amanda Dobbins?

I just spent that whole time trying to remember the, the St. Bart story reminded me of a time that I watched a movie starring Claire Danes and Hugh Dancy in Portuguese in Brazil on the hotel. Cause it was like all that was on and I couldn't remember the name of it. It's called Evening. Anyone? Patrick Wilson, Mamie Gummer. Anyway, that, and then I watched that thing you do like 12 times on a cruise.

• 1:47:20Speaker 03

Cause they can't have the songs.

• 1:47:22Amanda Dobbins?

Well, no, this was in, this was in English, but on the cruise, it was like 96.

• 1:47:26Sean Fennessey?

I had like a movie on a loop.

• 1:47:27Amanda Dobbins?

They had a movie on a loop, so I watched that thing you do like 45 times.

• 1:47:30Sean Fennessey?

This goes back to my like, we have way too many options for people now. Like, once upon a time you had to, the reason why most of the movies I drafted, I drafted is because I just saw them in my living room like 48 times.

• 1:47:41Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:47:42Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:47:42Speaker 03

You're not a bloodsport guy, Sierra?

• 1:47:44Speaker 04

  I am.

• 1:47:45Speaker 03

I'm really surprised to hear this.

• 1:47:46Speaker 04

I like bloodsport. It has, I, I do not revisit bloodsport that many times, and I think it might've been a mild, like, age difference thing. At 11, J C V D might've been like just a little outside of my interest range.

• 1:47:58Speaker 03

Incredible unintentional comedy in this movie too. Like, this movie is just perfect. It's, it was on basic cable, it'd be on local cable, it could really do anything you wanted to do.

• 1:48:08Speaker 04

I saw Cyborg in. Theater. I saw, you know, it was a cyborg or a universal soldier. Which one's Jay he in?

• 1:48:15Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, I think he's.

• 1:48:15Speaker 03

  He's in Universal Soldier.

• 1:48:16Sean Fennessey?

  Universal Soldier.

• 1:48:17Speaker 04

And then I saw the John Woo movie.

• 1:48:19Sean Fennessey?

  Hard to kill.

• 1:48:20Speaker 04

  Hard to kill. So, yeah.

• 1:48:22Sean Fennessey?

  Hard Target? Hard Target?

• 1:48:23Speaker 04

  Hard Target.

• 1:48:24Sean Fennessey?

  Hard Target.

• 1:48:24Amanda Dobbins?

Was Jean Claude Van Damme on Friends at some point?

• 1:48:27Speaker 03

He did. He he was in the big, uh, it was, I'm gonna say the Super Bowl episode.

• 1:48:34Amanda Dobbins?

  And someone is dating him?

• 1:48:36Speaker 03

Somebody was, yeah, somebody's working. It was a big deal that he was on.

• 1:48:40Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 1:48:42Speaker 04

I still like that JCVD movie. Did you ever see that?

• 1:48:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:48:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, the meta one?

• 1:48:46Speaker 03

I think his two best are Bloodsport and Son of Death.

• 1:48:49Speaker 04

  So, but this.

• 1:48:50Sean Fennessey?

Son of Death's the hockey one. That one's good. Peter Heim's. Yeah, that's a good movie.

• 1:48:53Speaker 03

  That's with Powers Booth.

• 1:48:54Speaker 04

I like that one. Powers. All right, Sierra. Uh, okay. So for these next two, so I have action and sequel left or action horror thriller and sequel left. I'm gonna pick movies that meant a lot to me in 1988. When you're young, when you're 11, you don't know any better. So to me, Young Guns was the best Western ever made.

• 1:49:16Speaker 04

And it is probably the Western I may have seen the most in my life because of the amount of numbers I put up in the first two years. And frankly, Young Guns and Young Guns 2.

• 1:49:24Sean Fennessey?

I rewatched it yesterday for the first time in probably more than 30 years.

• 1:49:28Speaker 04

  How was it?

• 1:49:29Sean Fennessey?

  Well, it was not good.

• 1:49:32Sean Fennessey?

But I but I'd like to hear you talk about it.

• 1:49:33Amanda Dobbins?

I was learning about Young Guns 2.

• 1:49:35Speaker 04

There is a surprise death in Young Guns that shocked me to my core as an 11 year old. It also was like a rock and roll Western, you know, like, but Bon Jovi comes becomes more involved, obviously, in Young Guns 2. But this felt kind of like a Brat Pack Western. It's Emilio Estevez and Kiefer Sutherland, Charlie Sheen and Lou Diamond Phillips.

• 1:49:55Speaker 03

  Who's our guys?

• 1:49:55Speaker 04

Yeah. And I was like, I was aware of these people. Yeah, Casey Schumasko.

• 1:50:01Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:50:02Speaker 04

Terrence Stamp is in this and.

• 1:50:04Sean Fennessey?

  Jack Palance, pretty city slickers.

• 1:50:06Speaker 03

Lou Diamond was hot. He's coming off La Bamba here. It was a big deal that he was in the movie.

• 1:50:10Speaker 04

Yeah. And I believe he plays a half Mexican, half Apache in this film.

• 1:50:15Sean Fennessey?

  He does.

• 1:50:15Speaker 04

  I actually think.

• 1:50:17Speaker 03

He's kinda really good in Young Guns.

• 1:50:19Speaker 04

  He's awesome.

• 1:50:19Speaker 03

I thought, I think he kinda wins the movie.

• 1:50:21Sean Fennessey?

It has a really crazy scene where they all do ayahuasca. Do you remember this part?

• 1:50:26Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:50:26Sean Fennessey?

And they change the vocal intonations of all the characters and he wears the white makeup in that scene. Really weird. It's like 12 or 18 minutes. Like it goes on for a long time.

• 1:50:35Speaker 03

And then Shane reenacted that for the next 30 years of his life.

• 1:50:38Sean Fennessey?

I mean, that might've been where he discovered it.

• 1:50:39Speaker 04

This movie also inverts the usual English guy's bad, Irish guy's good thing. Where Terrence Stamp is English and is being persecuted by the Catholic Irish cattle like mob.

• 1:50:54Speaker 03

I wish it was better. I really wanted to like Young Guns.

• 1:50:56Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:50:57Speaker 03

And really, but I think it's probably, you saw it at the perfect time to see it.

• 1:51:01Speaker 04

And I'll tell you something else. I was, I'm trying to decide what to do with sequel. There's, I'm trying to decide between two, but I'll tell you the one that I saw more and that.

• 1:51:08Sean Fennessey?

Can I tell you what, we can just say one last thing about Young Guns? You may not remember this, but there's one scene where Brian Keith shows up as an old man who's come to get the heads of the young guys. And he just rolls up in a wagon. He's like, Brian Keith's like 65 years old in the movie. And he's having a showdown with six 23 year old gunslingers. And he's just like talking to them and talking to them. And then he goes, let's dance. And he just starts firing at everybody and then gets behind, find a shed.

• 1:51:33Speaker 04

Doesn't he have like a big coat on and they're like, alright, old timer?

• 1:51:35Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, anyway, sorry to interrupt you.

• 1:51:37Speaker 04

So, one of the other things that's really funny is how like you'll see something and think that thing is really great until you see the thing it's been based on. And so that is why I'm picking what may be the lowest rated movie I've ever selected in a movie draft in terms of Rotten Tomatoes. Hanging out at about 4%.

• 1:51:57Amanda Dobbins?

  Wow.

• 1:51:58Speaker 04

  Caddyshack 2.

• 1:51:59Speaker 03

  Oh, wow.

• 1:51:59Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:52:00Sean Fennessey?

So, this is, I know that Bill hates this movie, but I also watched it a lot.

• 1:52:05Speaker 04

Because this is one of the first times I saw Chevy Chase. And I was like, that's the funniest person I've ever seen.

• 1:52:10Amanda Dobbins?

  For Caddyshack?

• 1:52:11Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 1:52:12Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:52:12Speaker 03

This movie's reprehensible. This is why I took Halloween 4 two rounds ago. I didn't want to end up with Caddyshack 2.

• 1:52:17Speaker 04

It was either gonna be this or Friday the 13th part.

• 1:52:21Speaker 03

Yeah, it was New Blood. I didn't even know what New Blood was.

• 1:52:23Sean Fennessey?

New Blood I don't like, yeah.

• 1:52:26Sean Fennessey?

There's, there's a couple of. Low key cool picks in the sequels.

• 1:52:30Speaker 04

I'm sure you're right, but like in any case.

• 1:52:32Sean Fennessey?

  I did my research.

• 1:52:32Speaker 04

I'm being honest about being 11 and really like watching Jackie Mason act a lot, you know, in this film as.

• 1:52:40Sean Fennessey?

This is definitely my introduction to his comedy.

• 1:52:42Speaker 04

  Does he play Jackie Hartunian?

• 1:52:43Sean Fennessey?

  I think that's right.

• 1:52:44Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:52:45Sean Fennessey?

He's just basically is filling in the Dangerfield role.

• 1:52:47Speaker 03

I think you having Last Temptation of Christ and Caddyshack 2.

• 1:52:51Sean Fennessey?

  That's elite.

• 1:52:51Speaker 03

  The world might end.

• 1:52:52Sean Fennessey?

  That's elite. I respect it.

• 1:52:54Speaker 03

  Good job. The roof's shaking.

• 1:52:56Speaker 04

Uh, this is another banger from Jonathan Silverman, who really had a lot going on at this era.

• 1:53:01Sean Fennessey?

  Sure.

• 1:53:01Speaker 04

In the eighties. Yeah, we had Weekend at Bernie's in this, right?

• 1:53:04Speaker 03

I think he had a lot going on in the sense that my friends and I were all like, what's up with this guy?

• 1:53:10Speaker 04

But the reason I picked this is because Chevy Chase reprises his role as Ty Webb. And to me, I was like, this guy's the funniest thing I've ever seen. And then found out about Fletch and found out about first Caddyshack.

• 1:53:21Sean Fennessey?

Does he do the look at my watch thing with no watch on in this movie?

• 1:53:26Speaker 04

He also just like sits on a guy's lap randomly. Like it's just.

• 1:53:29Sean Fennessey?

  He's having fun.

• 1:53:30Speaker 04

Yeah. Uh, Diane Cannon's in this film.

• 1:53:33Sean Fennessey?

  Cannon for work.

• 1:53:33Speaker 04

  Yeah. That's it.

• 1:53:37Speaker 03

Wow. I, I don't understand why this is still on the board.

• 1:53:43Amanda Dobbins?

  In wildcard.

• 1:53:45Speaker 03

Yeah, for me. I have my wildcard left. I had a plan for this.

• 1:53:52Speaker 03

I really feel bad. I, I feel bad. I want to call Carl Weathers and apologize for not taking Action Jackson.

• 1:53:57Sean Fennessey?

  Oh, sure.

• 1:53:57Speaker 03

Thought that's what I was gonna end up on.

• 1:53:59Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, your guy.

• 1:54:01Speaker 03

But this is just the value here. Late round. It feels a little Brock Purdy-ish. Um, good morning Vietnam this late as a wildcard. Like, add me. This won me the draft. Thanks, guys.

• 1:54:14Speaker 04

Is this a movie that people love?

• 1:54:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Well.

• 1:54:18Sean Fennessey?

  Action Jackson?

• 1:54:19Speaker 04

  No, Good Morning Vietnam.

• 1:54:20Sean Fennessey?

  Good Morning Vietnam's 87.

• 1:54:21Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:54:22Sean Fennessey?

  Good Morning Vietnam's 87.

• 1:54:23Speaker 03

Oh, did I write that down wrong?

• 1:54:24Speaker 04

  Yeah, it's December 25th, 1987.

• 1:54:26Speaker 03

Oh, I looked at the wrong thing. Uh, well, maybe I didn't win the draft.

• 1:54:28Sean Fennessey?

I think you might've been looking at the box office because it came out late in 87.

• 1:54:32Speaker 03

  I didn't do that.

• 1:54:33Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 1:54:33Speaker 03

  God damn it. Okay.

• 1:54:34Sean Fennessey?

  Sweet.

• 1:54:35Speaker 03

I don't have to apologize to Carl Weathers anymore.

• 1:54:39Speaker 03

I do have to apologize to Julie Roberts and Annabelle Gish and Lily Taylor, because I love Mystic Pizza.

• 1:54:45Amanda Dobbins?

  And Matt Damon.

• 1:54:46Sean Fennessey?

  What about Annabeth Gish?

• 1:54:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Who's at the.

• 1:54:48Speaker 03

Annabeth Gish. And I want to apologize also to Annabelle Gish.

• 1:54:52Speaker 04

He put it, he put all of it on JCVD and he can't do it.

• 1:54:57Sean Fennessey?

  Bloodsport is a knockout.

• 1:54:58Speaker 03

No, this is great. I'm so happy this worked out. Action Jackson.

• 1:55:03Speaker 03

There should have been three of these, maybe even four. Carl Weathers, it was the one time we gave him the car keys. He delivered.

• 1:55:09Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:55:10Speaker 03

Sharon Stone is in this movie throwing a hundred, I don't even know, they couldn't measure it. The radar gun broke. Like the, the glass on the radar gun, it just shattered.

• 1:55:20Speaker 04

King Solomon's Mines and I was like, I love her. I don't even know how to express it, how much I love her.

• 1:55:25Sean Fennessey?

  For me, it was Casino.

• 1:55:26Speaker 03

I honestly, I've talked to Van about this, obviously. I, it's inexplicable that they did, this wasn't a franchise. I don't know what happened. I think this movie even did like pretty well.

• 1:55:38Sean Fennessey?

Let's find out the box office right now.

• 1:55:39Speaker 04

This movie is insanely violent and has a ton of nudity, right?

• 1:55:42Speaker 03

  And who's the villain?

• 1:55:43Amanda Dobbins?

  1988, baby.

• 1:55:45Speaker 03

Who is the villain in this?

• 1:55:46Sean Fennessey?

They made about 11 million dollars worldwide, so.

• 1:55:50Speaker 03

Well, maybe that's one of the reasons.

• 1:55:51Sean Fennessey?

  Not ideal.

• 1:55:52Speaker 03

  Craig T. Nielsen.

• 1:55:53Speaker 04

  Oh, that's right.

• 1:55:54Speaker 03

Was the evil guy and then our guy Bill Dukes in it too. But also, forgot to mention, my apologies to her as well, Vanity.

• 1:56:01Speaker 04

  That's right.

• 1:56:02Speaker 03

This movie has Sharon Stone and Vanity. And I was 18 when it came out and, and Apollo Creed's in it trying to shed his rockiness. It's a great movie.

• 1:56:13Speaker 04

Man, it's always so funny to check from like 85 to 2000, the people who like are the cinematographers of movies like this. And it's always like Matthew F. Leonetti. It's like some guy shot like places in the heart and then five years later he's like, alright Vanity, step out of the shower.

• 1:56:30Sean Fennessey?

  The work is the work.

• 1:56:31Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 1:56:32Sean Fennessey?

Uh, okay. Well, you didn't take one away from me there, so that's good. I wasn't, was not eyeing Action Jackson.

• 1:56:40Sean Fennessey?

I got one more pick in sequel.

• 1:56:42Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah. And you did your homework, so.

• 1:56:43Sean Fennessey?

  I did my homework.

• 1:56:44Speaker 04

  Yeah, blow my mind.

• 1:56:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:56:46Sean Fennessey?

Well, The Decline of Western Civilization Part Two, The Metal Years, which is one of the best music documentaries of all time. Did you ever see this one?

• 1:56:53Speaker 03

  It's a good one.

• 1:56:53Sean Fennessey?

  It's a really funny movie.

• 1:56:55Speaker 04

I don't know if I really call this in the spirit of a sequel.

• 1:56:58Sean Fennessey?

It's got part two right here.

• 1:56:59Speaker 04

  Sure.

• 1:57:00Speaker 03

Was there a part one though?

• 1:57:01Sean Fennessey?

  There sure was.

• 1:57:02Speaker 04

  It's about punk rock.

• 1:57:02Sean Fennessey?

  It was about punk rock.

• 1:57:04Speaker 03

  Counts.

• 1:57:05Sean Fennessey?

  Solid.

• 1:57:05Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 1:57:06Speaker 03

  Good pick.

• 1:57:07Sean Fennessey?

  I mean, come on.

• 1:57:07Speaker 03

  I agree.

• 1:57:08Sean Fennessey?

  Stop your cap.

• 1:57:09Speaker 03

  Good job.

• 1:57:09Sean Fennessey?

Show it to me on opening day. Show me the respect.

• 1:57:12Speaker 03

This movie ended up getting her wins world.

• 1:57:14Sean Fennessey?

  It certainly did.

• 1:57:15Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:57:15Sean Fennessey?

Um, the stuff with, is it the lead singer of Warrant in the pool? Where he's incredibly drunk and drinking vodka straight out of the bottle? And his mom is living with him?

• 1:57:28Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 1:57:28Sean Fennessey?

Is some of the funniest and saddest shit I've ever seen in my life. Ozzy is incredible in this. Um, uh, Gene Simmons is incredible in this. All of the, the style and the testimonials is really, really great. This is one of the most watchable docs of all time. It's just an ingenious idea of like, very non-judgmentally, just showing these guys in their element and talking about what their lives are like at that period.

• 1:57:49Speaker 03

And then not knowing, basically having no idea it was going to be filmed and consumed by other people.

• 1:57:54Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, yes.

• 1:57:56Speaker 03

Which is, this movie could never happen anymore. Nobody would.

• 1:57:59Sean Fennessey?

  People would be self-conscious.

• 1:58:01Speaker 03

  They would be suspicious and.

• 1:58:02Sean Fennessey?

No, it's like, it's like Antipathy. It's such a great movie. If you, people haven't seen it, they should check it out. Chris is smarting over that because he didn't think to pick that one.

• 1:58:10Speaker 03

Well, no, I guess I didn't think about documentaries as franchises.

• 1:58:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:58:14Speaker 03

  But hey.

• 1:58:15Amanda Dobbins?

  Congratulations.

• 1:58:16Sean Fennessey?

There was a part three as well.

• 1:58:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Wow.

• 1:58:18Sean Fennessey?

So is it a true franchise? Well, I haven't seen that one, so.

• 1:58:22Speaker 03

So are you done or you have more?

• 1:58:23Amanda Dobbins?

No, I have sequel, which is sort of, it's not the most exciting finale.

• 1:58:26Speaker 03

Is this what you wanted for yourself to be picking sequel last?

• 1:58:29Amanda Dobbins?

Well, again, I understand, you know, it's not the kicker that we want, but I didn't want someone else to take Crossing the Lancy. So I did that in the last round.

• 1:58:37Speaker 03

And you would have taken Caddyshack two.

• 1:58:39Amanda Dobbins?

Uh, sure, yeah. Um, and I know that the, the Rambo that is dedicated to the people of Afghanistan is still on the board, but I'm not going to be doing that one. Um.

• 1:58:49Sean Fennessey?

  Great, great call.

• 1:58:51Amanda Dobbins?

  It is. Uh, I, um.

• 1:58:55Amanda Dobbins?

I'm going with a movie that none of you have even seen, which is Appointment with Death, which is the last time that Peter Usinoff played Hercule Poirot.

• 1:59:02Speaker 03

Great pick. Good job, Amanda. Shit.

• 1:59:04Amanda Dobbins?

It's not that good. It's, and I would say it's like not that good as an Agatha Christie mystery because it uses a lot of clock shenanigans that she's used a million times before. But I'm gonna read you the cast and then I want you guys to tell me who you think did it.

• 1:59:16Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 1:59:17Amanda Dobbins?

Because that's, these adaptations are just a bunch of famous people and then...

• 1:59:22Sean Fennessey?

I love it. I've never seen this one.

• 1:59:24Amanda Dobbins?

So, Peter Usinoff is Hercule Poirot for the last time. He didn't do it. Lauren Bacall, Carrie Fisher, John Gilgood, Piper Laurie, Haley Mills, and some other people, but...

• 1:59:34Speaker 03

  It's pretty good.

• 1:59:34Amanda Dobbins?

  Jenny Seagrove and David Soul.

• 1:59:37Sean Fennessey?

  Haley Mills?

• 1:59:37Amanda Dobbins?

  Haley Mills is in it.

• 1:59:38Speaker 03

  David Soul.

• 1:59:39Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 1:59:40Speaker 03

  Hutch. What's this one called?

• 1:59:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Appointment with Death.

• 1:59:44Speaker 03

  Appointment with Death.

• 1:59:45Sean Fennessey?

  I'll guess Carrie Fisher.

• 1:59:47Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay. Christopher?

• 1:59:48Speaker 03

  Bacall.

• 1:59:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Bill?

• 1:59:51Speaker 03

  Bacall.

• 1:59:51Amanda Dobbins?

It's Bacall. Yeah, of course it's Bacall. Yeah. Also, the second Poirot that she did, because remember, she's also in Murder on the Orient Express.

• 1:59:59Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, yeah, yeah.

• 2:00:00Speaker 03

But she didn't do it on that one.

• 2:00:02Amanda Dobbins?

They all, well, spoiler alert for Murder on the Orient Express, but they all did. Though I think that she, is she the mom? So, yeah, they all do it. Anyway, that's, that's my pick.

• 2:00:13Speaker 03

  That's a great sequel pick.

• 2:00:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Thanks so much.

• 2:00:14Sean Fennessey?

There are a lot of sequels from this year.

• 2:00:17Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 2:00:17Sean Fennessey?

None of them are good, really. The only other cool one I thought about was Police Story 2, the Jackie Chan movie, which is a really cool Jackie Chan movie that he directed. The Nightmare on Elm Street movie is four, The Dream Master. Three, I would have taken. Four, no.

• 2:00:31Speaker 03

The horror sequels were bad, except for Halloween 4.

• 2:00:34Sean Fennessey?

  Hellraiser 2's okay.

• 2:00:35Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:00:35Sean Fennessey?

  It's okay.

• 2:00:36Speaker 03

I never, I never was a Hellraiser guy.

• 2:00:37Sean Fennessey?

One of the biggest movies of this year, shockingly big, is Crocodile Dundee 2.

• 2:00:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:00:44Sean Fennessey?

  Which...

• 2:00:44Speaker 03

  Never got it.

• 2:00:45Speaker 04

  Me neither.

• 2:00:46Speaker 03

Just didn't, didn't get it. Didn't understand why people saw the first one and then they made a sequel and it's like, what, what's going on? They're making another one? And then people saw that too.

• 2:00:55Sean Fennessey?

It's the sixth highest grossing movie of the year. It made $109 million.

• 2:00:59Speaker 03

  Makes no sense.

• 2:01:00Speaker 04

This is a real, like, you can pay three bucks to go see this guy go, that's not enough. Like, I guess, I guess that's what we wanted back then.

• 2:01:07Sean Fennessey?

Can you do the, like, the update to 2026?

• 2:01:11Speaker 04

  Adjusted for inflation?

• 2:01:12Sean Fennessey?

For $109 million, how much is that adjusted for inflation? Cause like, it's a fucking Marvel movie for Crocodile Dundee 2.

• 2:01:19Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:01:20Speaker 03

I never got it. You been to Australia? The girl was attractive. It's Australia, right? Linda Kowalski, whatever her name was.

• 2:01:27Sean Fennessey?

  Kowalski, yeah.

• 2:01:27Speaker 03

Liked her. Yeah, she was great.

• 2:01:29Sean Fennessey?

That was his wife in real life.

• 2:01:30Speaker 03

I apologized to a couple of movies that I wanted to pick.

• 2:01:33Sean Fennessey?

Of course, it's honorably mentioned some.

• 2:01:36Speaker 03

Bright Legs, Big City, I'm Sorry.

• 2:01:38Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:01:39Speaker 03

Kiefer's good in that. Just couldn't totally get there with it.

• 2:01:41Sean Fennessey?

Watched it for the first time last week, didn't like it.

• 2:01:42Speaker 03

Yeah, it's just didn't make it. I wanted it to be good.

• 2:01:45Sean Fennessey?

James Bridges too. I love James Bridges movies.

• 2:01:47Speaker 03

Tequila Sunrise was another one, just as much as I wanted to love it, it's just not a good movie.

• 2:01:52Speaker 04

I wanted to ask you about a movie that I have a lot of affection for, and I was wondering if you liked it. Talk Radio.

• 2:01:58Speaker 03

  Boghossian? No.

• 2:01:59Speaker 04

  Okay.

• 2:02:00Speaker 03

  Yeah, I never liked Boghossian.

• 2:02:01Speaker 04

As a fellow Mike guy, you know, like just.

• 2:02:04Sean Fennessey?

  It's a great film.

• 2:02:04Speaker 03

Colors was a backup drama for me in case there was a run on dramas and I didn't get it, but I don't love that movie.

• 2:02:10Sean Fennessey?

You empathize with those cops or?

• 2:02:11Speaker 03

Man, I just don't. I like that Duval and Sean Penn are in a cop movie together, but it's, that movie's problematic. Above the Law, Seagal's first movie. It's probably the weakest Seagal, which is why I stayed away.

• 2:02:22Sean Fennessey?

  It's the best Seagal movie.

• 2:02:23Speaker 04

  Is that the Rossa Farians?

• 2:02:24Speaker 03

  No, Out for Justice is.

• 2:02:25Sean Fennessey?

Oh, no. Is Out for Justice the one that?

• 2:02:27Speaker 03

Above the Law is the first one. It's that, they hadn't really figured out Seagal yet.

• 2:02:30Sean Fennessey?

  What's the Andrew Davis one?

• 2:02:31Speaker 04

  That's Above the Law.

• 2:02:33Sean Fennessey?

  That's Above the Law.

• 2:02:34Speaker 03

No, Above the Law isn't Andrew Davis.

• 2:02:36Speaker 04

I think Above the Law is directed by Andrew Davis. Yeah, it is.

• 2:02:39Sean Fennessey?

  It is, yeah.

• 2:02:40Speaker 03

  Really?

• 2:02:40Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, that's the, that's the best one. That's the one I'm thinking of.

• 2:02:42Speaker 04

A martial arts expert and former CIA agent Nico Toscani is working as a Chicago cop on a relatively routine drug trafficking investigation.

• 2:02:51Speaker 03

  It's good.

• 2:02:51Sean Fennessey?

  That one is legit good.

• 2:02:52Speaker 03

The first four Seagulls are great. Maniac Cop, I thought somebody might take.

• 2:02:57Speaker 04

Yeah, or cop for that matter.

• 2:02:59Sean Fennessey?

I watched Maniac Cop and I really liked it. It would have been in my horror picks.

• 2:03:02Speaker 04

  Nicholas Witten's remaking it up.

• 2:03:03Speaker 03

  My favorite one,

• 2:03:06Speaker 03

that I just think's a banger. It's a two B banger, Amanda. Okay. Masquerade with Rob Lowe. I don't know this one. It's an erotic thriller. Okay. It's, it's set in somewhere ocean-y and, and nice to hang out with. Well, I'm Googling where now. It's pretty raunchy. Meg Tilly's in it. Kim Cattrall basically testing out her Sex and the City character. It's the Hamptons. The Hamptons. Okay. And Rob Lowe's great in it, and the movie's just good. It's like, like, and somebody good directed it. Does it say who directed that?

• 2:03:40Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, yes. Sorry, but I was just reading the locations. Bob Swaim, written by Dick Wolf.

• 2:03:45Speaker 03

Bob Swaim, written by Dick Wolf. Bob Swaim, we did, he crossed paths with the Rewatchables recently with something he did. But yeah, the only other one I had for a wild card was U2 Rattling Home.

• 2:03:57Sean Fennessey?

Tried to acquire it on DVD, on Blu-ray this week to get another look at it, running about 75 bucks on eBay. Not what you want.

• 2:04:05Speaker 04

  Masquerades?

• 2:04:05Sean Fennessey?

  No, U2, U2 Rattling Home.

• 2:04:08Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:04:08Sean Fennessey?

  Fills your nose.

• 2:04:09Amanda Dobbins?

What's your, what's your price limit right now? You know, unless there's a sale.

• 2:04:13Sean Fennessey?

For a movie I'm gonna watch one time for prep for a pod, I would never spend 75 dollars.

• 2:04:18Speaker 04

I would never want to advocate for this, but if there is a clip of, it doesn't make the actual final film, is of them playing With or Without You in Tempe from this movie, it looks better than 98% of movies made today. And it's the best version of With or Without You.

• 2:04:34Sean Fennessey?

  Isn't it Jeff Croninwith?

• 2:04:36Speaker 04

  Yes.

• 2:04:36Sean Fennessey?

David Fincher, cinematographer, shot this movie, I think.

• 2:04:39Speaker 03

That's my favorite. Jacko and I used to do this scene all through college where the edge is playing BB King, this thing they did. And he's like, "Do you like the lyrics, BB?" BB's like, "Yeah, I'm looking for some good lyrics."

• 2:04:52Speaker 04

It's just like the most hilarious exchange. Stop the traffic.

• 2:04:55Speaker 03

We liked that movie. Was there any, what were you, what are your big regrets?

• 2:04:58Speaker 04

I mean, I'll say for my ones, I mean, I like Dead Ringers a lot. We didn't put in Willow. Nobody took Willow.

• 2:05:07Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, I had Willow on my list.

• 2:05:08Speaker 03

  So nobody took Twins?

• 2:05:09Sean Fennessey?

  Nobody took Twins.

• 2:05:10Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 2:05:10Speaker 04

  Um, School Days.

• 2:05:12Speaker 03

  It's not a great movie.

• 2:05:12Speaker 04

Uh, this is a sentimental pick because it was just like a 1988 VHS classic was Satisfaction with Justine Bateman.

• 2:05:19Speaker 03

  Oh, yeah.

• 2:05:19Sean Fennessey?

  Liam Neeson's in that.

• 2:05:20Speaker 04

Yeah. Um, and Serpent in the Rainbow, which is Craven.

• 2:05:24Sean Fennessey?

  Craven, yeah.

• 2:05:25Speaker 04

  And School Days.

• 2:05:27Speaker 03

Honestly, I'm a little upset Amanda didn't take Mystic Pizza. I thought, I thought I knew her better.

• 2:05:31Speaker 04

  Kind of surprised.

• 2:05:32Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:05:32Amanda Dobbins?

  That was on my list.

• 2:05:33Speaker 03

  Kept waiting for it.

• 2:05:34Amanda Dobbins?

It was in the wild card spot, but I really, I do like Crossing the Lancy. I feel like I've taken Mystic Pizza before. Ian, maybe not a draft, but like in a Julia Roberts Hall of Fame situation. So it wasn't there. The other honorable mention that I wanted to do was just a movie I had not seen until now, which is A Handful of Dust. Just an Evelyn Wa adaptation starring Kristen Scott Thomas. As like, and it's kind of one of her main breakthroughs. Alec Guinness also shows up. And, you know, other people, but-

• 2:06:04Speaker 03

Big year for A- Possible 88 MVP.

• 2:06:06Speaker 04

Yeah. Dorit and A Handful of Dust.

• 2:06:09Amanda Dobbins?

Judi Dench is in, you know, James Wilby. It's, it's, but it's, you know, a costume-ish drama that you would think I would know about. And I did not. Uh, pretty good.

• 2:06:18Sean Fennessey?

Okay. There, I got a lot more. There's a lot of, I mean, we didn't-

• 2:06:21Speaker 03

We never talked about Mississippi Burning.

• 2:06:23Sean Fennessey?

We didn't talk about Mississippi. It was a huge movie that year.

• 2:06:24Speaker 03

Big Oscar. That was a scene in the theater movie.

• 2:06:26Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 2:06:27Speaker 03

Um. Plus Gene Hackman coming off Hoosiers, now trying to solve racism in the deep south.

• 2:06:32Sean Fennessey?

First time I ever saw Frances McDormand is in that movie. And she was nominated for that movie. And she's got that heat with Hackman, but she's the wife of the racist.

• 2:06:39Speaker 03

  Legend.

• 2:06:39Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, she's great. Uh, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?

• 2:06:43Speaker 03

Yeah. Never, never really clicked with me.

• 2:06:45Sean Fennessey?

Oh, interesting. Big movie from the time.

• 2:06:47Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:06:47Sean Fennessey?

Um, Scrooged, also a huge movie at the time.

• 2:06:50Speaker 03

  Not my favorite.

• 2:06:51Sean Fennessey?

I'm not a huge fan of it either. Uh, some smaller ones I really like. Miracle Mile. Anthony Edwards. Is it Mayor Winningham?

• 2:06:59Speaker 03

  The Johnnys on Wilshire.

• 2:07:00Sean Fennessey?

  Yes, The Old Diner.

• 2:07:01Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:07:02Sean Fennessey?

Um, which is about like a, uh, LA like undergoing the big one, right?

• 2:07:05Speaker 03

  I like that one.

• 2:07:06Sean Fennessey?

Um, I saw something for the first time. I don't know if any of you guys have seen it. This is one that I bought to watch because I really wanted to watch it. I know you guys like Harold Becker. I'd never seen this movie before. The Boost with James Woods. Do you know about this movie?

• 2:07:18Speaker 04

Oh, is that where he's doing drugs?

• 2:07:20Sean Fennessey?

  Yes.

• 2:07:20Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:07:20Sean Fennessey?

So he's playing a, he's playing a salesman and he's having a hard time in his career. He's married to Sean Young, who looks fabulous in this movie. And he's having a really hard time catching on and making any money, living in New York. And he goes in for a job interview and he bombs the job interview, but one of the guys who's interviewing him in the interview sees something in him. And he's like, I'm about to leave this company and start my own business and we're going to go out to LA and I want you to come with me and be my salesman.

• 2:07:48Speaker 03

  What I saw in CR.

• 2:07:49Sean Fennessey?

Same, same shit. James Woods goes out and he takes off like wildfire, selling real estate in LA and he gets-

• 2:07:56Speaker 03

  The Boost.

• 2:07:57Sean Fennessey?

He gets rich really fast. Then the government changes the tax laws.

• 2:08:03Speaker 03

Like the loophole that he was using?

• 2:08:04Sean Fennessey?

Yes. And all of a sudden, he's addicted to cocaine and he is massively in debt. And it's a real like yuppie nightmare spiral movie. I thought it was really good.

• 2:08:15Speaker 03

Watch now on MGM, Tubi, or Fubo. Wow.

• 2:08:18Amanda Dobbins?

Oh, sick. I recently subscribed to MGM again.

• 2:08:22Speaker 03

  I like MGM.

• 2:08:22Sean Fennessey?

It's on there that you wanted to get into.

• 2:08:24Amanda Dobbins?

A movie for this. I can't remember now, but you know, there had been a few of them.

• 2:08:28Speaker 03

I think MGM's strong. Yeah. I mean, I subscribe to everything because I just have to, but.

• 2:08:34Sean Fennessey?

  You use the cable package.

• 2:08:36Speaker 03

Stars. No, I do all the apps like what, oh yeah.

• 2:08:38Sean Fennessey?

But I mean, historically, you were like, you watched all that.

• 2:08:41Speaker 03

But I really like the MGM. I think they have good movies.

• 2:08:44Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 2:08:44Sean Fennessey?

Uh, Patty Hearst, Patty Hearst, Paul Schrader's docu-drama about the, no, not a fan. Okay. I like it. Vim Vender's Wings of Desire, probably the best movie not drafted here.

• 2:08:54Speaker 04

We can do Punchline or The Accused, which are just two big movies for, uh, big, big, Tom Hanks, Jodie Foster people we like talking about.

• 2:09:03Sean Fennessey?

  Jodie Foster won for that.

• 2:09:05Speaker 03

I watched The Accused a couple of years ago and, uh, it was really dated. She's really good in it, but it's very like, feels very eighties.

• 2:09:13Speaker 04

Do you like Everybody's All American?

• 2:09:15Speaker 03

  Not really. I don't.

• 2:09:16Sean Fennessey?

  I've never seen that.

• 2:09:17Speaker 04

It's like Kurt Russell and Robin Williams.

• 2:09:19Speaker 03

Dennis, isn't Dennis Quaid in that?

• 2:09:21Sean Fennessey?

No, that's Best of Times, which is what you're talking about, right?

• 2:09:23Speaker 03

Dennis Quaid's in Everybody's All American with Kurt Russell.

• 2:09:26Speaker 04

Right. It's, they go back to LSU, right? Something like that.

• 2:09:30Sean Fennessey?

  Stand and Deliver?

• 2:09:31Speaker 04

  Yeah, Almost.

• 2:09:33Sean Fennessey?

Speaking of, speaking of Lou Diamond Phillips is.

• 2:09:35Speaker 03

Was on my wild card list.

• 2:09:37Sean Fennessey?

You know, he's playing like a cholo gangster and who is also really good at calculus.

• 2:09:43Speaker 04

  Yeah. Great movie idea.

• 2:09:45Sean Fennessey?

Edward James Almost. Uh, Gorillaz in the Mist?

• 2:09:48Speaker 04

  Mm-hmm.

• 2:09:49Sean Fennessey?

  Sigourney Weaver?

• 2:09:50Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 2:09:50Speaker 03

  I don't love that movie.

• 2:09:51Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, I never got it either. Yeah.

• 2:09:53Sean Fennessey?

  Okay.

• 2:09:53Amanda Dobbins?

Respect to Sigourney Weaver though. She was also, she was nominated both for that and Working Girl. I vote Working Girl, obviously.

• 2:09:59Sean Fennessey?

Okay. Uh, we mentioned Tucker. The Unbearable Lightness of Being? DDL? Early DDL?

• 2:10:04Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah. That's a movie.

• 2:10:06Sean Fennessey?

  Hmm.

• 2:10:07Amanda Dobbins?

  We didn't say Beaches.

• 2:10:09Sean Fennessey?

  Beaches?

• 2:10:09Amanda Dobbins?

  That was a thing.

• 2:10:10Sean Fennessey?

It sure was. We were talking yesterday about the Wind Beneath My Wings.

• 2:10:13Speaker 04

  Are you a Beaches fan?

• 2:10:14Amanda Dobbins?

I mean, it didn't draft it.

• 2:10:15Speaker 04

  I guess not.

• 2:10:16Amanda Dobbins?

I think Wind Beneath My Wings, like I had to sing in elementary school at some point, you know? So that's kind of the, the long tail of the Beaches effect for me.

• 2:10:26Speaker 03

I mean, honestly, License to Drive, I guess, was the best of all the 80s teen movies. And I don't think that should have been drafted. And Deadpool is probably the most disappointing because that was like Clint, Dirty Harry's back. It just sucked.

• 2:10:37Sean Fennessey?

Well, Clint was putting all his energy into Bird, the movie he directed that year about Charlie Parker.

• 2:10:44Speaker 03

  Diane Van Winkle.

• 2:10:45Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah.

• 2:10:47Speaker 03

I thought you were gonna say he was putting his energy into Taking Down Babes.

• 2:10:50Sean Fennessey?

  That's.

• 2:10:52Speaker 04

  Running Carmel.

• 2:10:53Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:10:53Sean Fennessey?

Well, I don't think he was mayor at that time.

• 2:10:55Speaker 04

  Not yet.

• 2:10:56Sean Fennessey?

I think it was in the early 90s, right? Post Unforgiven.

• 2:10:59Speaker 03

I thought the sequels were incredibly disappointing.

• 2:11:02Sean Fennessey?

  It's a tough year.

• 2:11:03Speaker 03

Like really like bad versions of movies that had peaked like three movies earlier, basically.

• 2:11:08Sean Fennessey?

  Better for the pod, though.

• 2:11:09Speaker 03

No, I know, but it's just like, I was surprised there wasn't like, oh, that I kind of don't mind that Friday the 13th. There was like, none of those for me.

• 2:11:17Sean Fennessey?

Didn't we have like a plethora of them in 89? I feel like we had a bunch to choose from.

• 2:11:22Amanda Dobbins?

Yeah, because the top 10 was all either was Batman and or I think it's Ghostbusters 2.

• 2:11:28Sean Fennessey?

  Ghostbusters 2, yeah.

• 2:11:29Speaker 04

  Last Crusade.

• 2:11:30Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, Last Crusade.

• 2:11:31Speaker 03

  Saddest sequel is Arthur 2.

• 2:11:33Sean Fennessey?

  On the Rocks.

• 2:11:34Speaker 03

Where they were like, is there anything left here? Nope.

• 2:11:38Sean Fennessey?

What'd you think of the Arthur remake with Russell Brand?

• 2:11:41Speaker 03

  Did that happen?

• 2:11:41Speaker 04

  Isn't Greta Gerwig in that?

• 2:11:42Sean Fennessey?

She is, she's the female lead.

• 2:11:44Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:11:44Sean Fennessey?

  Did you like it?

• 2:11:45Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, I forgot about that.

• 2:11:46Speaker 03

  Wow, I forgot that happened.

• 2:11:47Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:11:48Speaker 03

  Greta Gerwig's in that?

• 2:11:49Speaker 04

She was like, it was like that she did that and then she was gonna make the How I Met Your Mother sequel and didn't. But that wound up becoming a great auteur.

• 2:11:59Sean Fennessey?

  Uh, any closing thoughts?

• 2:12:00Speaker 04

No, I mean, I'm trying to think if we missed anything. I think we talked about everything for the most part. Should we recap teams?

• 2:12:09Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, let's recap our teams. Okay, so Sierra, the first pick, so you go first, Chris.

• 2:12:13Speaker 04

Uh, in drama, I had The Last Temptation of Christ. Comedy, I had Bull Durham. In action horror thriller, I took Young Guns. In Oscar nominee, Married to the Mob. In sequel, Caddyshack 2, 4%. Uh, in blockbuster, Die Hard, and in wildcard, Naked Gun.

• 2:12:30Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, BS.

• 2:12:31Speaker 03

So Caddyshack 2 really hurt you.

• 2:12:32Speaker 04

  Yeah.

• 2:12:33Speaker 03

Dangerous liaisons for drama. Bloodsport, action. Rain Man, Oscar nominee. Midnight Run for comedy. Halloween 4 for sequel.

• 2:12:44Speaker 03

Cocktail for Blockbuster and Action Jackson for Wildcard. I'm feeling good about that.

• 2:12:50Speaker 04

  That's a good class, man.

• 2:12:51Sean Fennessey?

  Solid.

• 2:12:51Speaker 03

It feels very 1988-ish. Feels like me, you know what?

• 2:12:55Amanda Dobbins?

  It does.

• 2:12:55Speaker 03

That, that has a little scent of me in that list.

• 2:12:58Sean Fennessey?

Well, how would you describe that scent?

• 2:13:00Speaker 04

  It smells like the garden.

• 2:13:02Sean Fennessey?

  Yeah, just like a...

• 2:13:04Speaker 03

It smells like popcorn and happiness.

• 2:13:05Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, a worn, worn in second baseman's glove.

• 2:13:08Speaker 03

  Yeah.

• 2:13:09Sean Fennessey?

Uh, speaking of, for my picks, drama, I had Eight Men Out. Comedy, I had Beetlejuice. Action horror thriller, I have They Live. Oscar nominee, I have Who Framed Roger Rabbit? Sequel, The Decline of Western Civilization Part Two: The Metal Years.

• 2:13:22Speaker 03

  That's a cheat.

• 2:13:23Sean Fennessey?

  Blockbuster.

• 2:13:24Amanda Dobbins?

You were with him in the moment, but now you're turning?

• 2:13:26Speaker 03

Nah, it's just Sean cheated, but it's his pod. On your own pod, you can cheat.

• 2:13:30Sean Fennessey?

  He did not cheat.

• 2:13:31Amanda Dobbins?

He constructed the rules to get him himself.

• 2:13:34Speaker 04

Do we even post these for votes anymore?

• 2:13:36Speaker 03

  We do, we do.

• 2:13:37Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, we post them on CR heads. Uh, Blockbuster got Big and Wildcard, I got A Fish Called Wanda.

• 2:13:43Amanda Dobbins?

  Okay.

• 2:13:44Speaker 03

Interesting, I don't know who won this one.

• 2:13:45Amanda Dobbins?

  In drama?

• 2:13:46Speaker 03

  Everybody's got some weak spots.

• 2:13:47Amanda Dobbins?

In drama, I have Running on Empty. In comedy, Working Girl. In action horror thriller, Frantic. In Oscar nominee, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. In sequel, Appointment with Death. In Blockbuster, Coming to America. And in Wildcard, Crossing Delancy.

• 2:14:01Speaker 04

It's between these two. I think, I think we picked with our hearts.

• 2:14:05Amanda Dobbins?

  I picked with my heart.

• 2:14:05Speaker 04

  And we're, well, you did.

• 2:14:07Amanda Dobbins?

  You know.

• 2:14:07Speaker 04

  You did.

• 2:14:08Sean Fennessey?

Not a movie on here I don't like.

• 2:14:09Speaker 04

We're fringy, you know? And you, you know, like the Kumite. It's just like, sometimes you have to go.

• 2:14:13Sean Fennessey?

Yeah, sometimes you need to get your chest blown out by Chong.

• 2:14:16Speaker 03

  This big BS.

• 2:14:20Speaker 03

Bloodsport and Action Jackson, come on, guys. What are we doing?

• 2:14:22Amanda Dobbins?

Will you vote in this vote?

• 2:14:24Speaker 03

  Yeah, I'll vote for myself.

• 2:14:28Sean Fennessey?

You wouldn't vote for Michael Dukakis, but you would vote for yourself.

• 2:14:31Speaker 04

The thing is, like, you wanted to, but it's like, it was harder back then.

• 2:14:33Speaker 03

I might have voted, I really might.

• 2:14:35Speaker 04

And I might have voted for Carrie, I just can't remember.

• 2:14:38Speaker 03

I don't remember doing Blood Diamond Rewatchables with CR, which was six years ago, so...

• 2:14:42Amanda Dobbins?

I remember listening to that on a, I know exactly where I was when you started doing those accents.

• 2:14:46Sean Fennessey?

Chris, in a meeting right before this pod, was just openly referring to Danny Archer, as though he were like a very famous movie character that we all know and love. Danny Archer from Blood Diamond?

• 2:14:56Speaker 04

  Danny Atch. CIA.

• 2:15:01Sean Fennessey?

Okay, well, thanks very much to our producer, Jack Sanders, for his work on this episode. Thanks to Lucas Cavanagh and Jacob Cornett for production support. Next week, we'll talk about the best movies of the year so far, the end of the first three months, and 10 movies that we missed during Oscar season.

• 2:15:15Speaker 04

  Movies came out this year?

• 2:15:16Sean Fennessey?

A lot of movies, actually. Have you been catching up?

• 2:15:19Amanda Dobbins?

  Yes.

• 2:15:19Sean Fennessey?

  Okay, do you feel ready?

• 2:15:21Amanda Dobbins?

Well, I've learned a lot about Peaky Blinders, and I can't wait to share it with you.

• 2:15:24Speaker 04

  The Immortal Man?

• 2:15:25Amanda Dobbins?

Yes. I know who he is.

• 2:15:27Sean Fennessey?

Peaky Blinders, you in on that?

• 2:15:28Speaker 04

  No.

• 2:15:28Speaker 03

  Tommy Shelby?

• 2:15:29Amanda Dobbins?

  Yeah.

• 2:15:29Speaker 04

  Never got in.

• 2:15:30Speaker 03

  When, when is this running?

• 2:15:32Sean Fennessey?

  On Friday?

• 2:15:33Speaker 05

  Nope, tomorrow morning.

• 2:15:34Sean Fennessey?

  Tomorrow morning.

• 2:15:35Speaker 05

  That's what I thought.

• 2:15:35Sean Fennessey?

  Thursday morning, sorry.

• 2:15:36Speaker 03

When is Crime 101 gonna be on a streamer?

• 2:15:38Speaker 04

  It's not on Amazon already?

• 2:15:39Sean Fennessey?

  It's on Amazon pretty soon.

• 2:15:41Speaker 04

  It's on Amazon now.

• 2:15:42Speaker 03

What can I pay for it?

• 2:15:42Sean Fennessey?

  I do need your thoughts.

• 2:15:44Speaker 03

I, I've been waiting, because I really was, and I just don't understand it.

• 2:15:47Speaker 04

The other day, one of my favorite occurrences is Van calls me, and I'm like, oh, no, no. What happened? And he's just like, Crime 101. It could have been better. And he's like, I won't take much of your time, but Crime 101 could have been better. And I'm like, thank you.

• 2:16:01Amanda Dobbins?

  I agree, but I didn't have a bad time.

• 2:16:02Sean Fennessey?

I like, I, I need to know, you're the tiebreaker on this. I really need to know, because you were a little colder on it than I expected to be, and we didn't get a chance to talk about it. It's like, pretty good. It's not great.

• 2:16:12Speaker 04

We did the pod together, man.

• 2:16:14Amanda Dobbins?

  Oh, that's great.

• 2:16:14Sean Fennessey?

But you were, you were like, eh!

• 2:16:15Speaker 04

But you insulted him a little bit.

• 2:16:20Amanda Dobbins?

  It's, I mean...

• 2:16:21Sean Fennessey?

  I liked it.

• 2:16:23Speaker 04

  Is it better than Hamlet?

• 2:16:24Sean Fennessey?

My, in my opinion, yes. The first hour of Crime 101 blows the first hour of Hamlet out of the water.

• 2:16:30Speaker 04

Wait, are you being for real?

• 2:16:30Amanda Dobbins?

Do you feel that way? I don't think...

• 2:16:31Sean Fennessey?

The first hour of Hamlet, I, I hated.

• 2:16:33Amanda Dobbins?

But did the tree, then the roots of the tree.

• 2:16:35Sean Fennessey?

The second hour of Hamlet is phenomenal.

• 2:16:37Amanda Dobbins?

  There's a hawk.

• 2:16:38Speaker 04

  But it's just Hamlet!

• 2:16:39Sean Fennessey?

Well, yeah, that part, yeah. I approve of that part. All right, Bill Simmons, thank you so much for doing this.

• 2:16:45Speaker 04

  Pleasure to be here.

• 2:16:45Sean Fennessey?

CR, thank you. We'll see you soon.

• 2:17:06Speaker 07
